I'm pro football Hall of Famer Brian Dawkins, and I lived for a long time with something I did not know the name of: major depressive disorder. I carried sadness and anger because I thought I could handle it alone, but I couldn't. Now I want to make sure others know that that support is out there. If you're experiencing similar symptoms, talk to a healthcare professional. Visit MDDAllies.com to watch my story.

• 0:25Speaker 01

Paid partnership with Johnson & Johnson. Brian Dawkins has not prescribed Caplyta lumateperone.

• 0:37Speaker 02

I needed more from my antidepressant, so my doctor added Caplyta lumateperone, proven to provide greater relief from depression symptoms than an antidepressant alone, building on my progress without starting over. Caplyta is for adults with major depressive disorder when used with an antidepressant and is available by prescription only. Individual results may vary. In clinical trials, weight gain was not common.

• 0:57Speaker 01

Elderly dementia patients have increased risk of death or stroke. Caplyta is not approved for dementia-related psychosis. Call your doctor about new or sudden mood changes, behaviors, or suicidal thoughts right away. Antidepressants may increase these risks. Report fever, confusion, stiff muscles, which may be life-threatening, or uncontrolled muscle movements, which may be permanent. High cholesterol and weight gain may occur, as can high blood sugar, which may be fatal. Monitoring is recommended. Common side effects are sleepiness, dizziness, nausea, dry mouth, feeling tired, and diarrhea. These aren't all the side effects.

• 2:00Adam Friedland?

We're gonna talk about the film, okay? Stop it. No, no, it's not that good. It's really, it's, some of them are rude.

• 2:07Speaker 05

Rain's team wanted me to pass along the message. He's totally fine to talk about The Office, but he doesn't want it to be a main focus in the interview and appreciate

• 2:13Adam Friedland?

It's not a main focus, we're talking about-

• 2:14Speaker 05

keeping that topic to more of a minimum.

• 2:16Adam Friedland?

We're talking about the Bagdad and Vida.

• 2:17Speaker 05

That's pretty true. They glean that. But I'm happy to talk about The Office.

• 2:21Adam Friedland?

Well, no. I, I wanna talk about your new film, Code 3.

• 2:26Speaker 05

You know how you talked about the Midwestern person saying thank you and not really meaning it?

• 2:32Adam Friedland?

I'm so interested in hearing about your new movie.

• 2:36Adam Friedland?

  Tell us about your movie.

• 3:51Adam Friedland?

Great stuff. My guest this week is actor Rainn Wilson. Wilson is, of course, best known for his portrayal of the buffoonish Dwight Schrute on the NBC's hit sitcom, The Office. During the series' eight-season run, America reveled in Schrute's humiliation at the hands of Jim Halpert, who was played by John Krasinski from also the Benghazi movie, if you guys have seen that one. During one such episode, famously, Schrute's stapler was put in a gelatin mold, and it was hilarious. Now, as everyone knows, one of my strengths as an interviewer is my natural charm and charisma.

• 4:28Adam Friedland?

Practically every guest I've had on this show has left an interview in love with me, which is frankly kind of annoying. But my conversation with Wilson was perhaps the polar opposite. It was contentious, it was uncomfortable, and after he left the studio that day, it came to my attention that he had cyberbullied me on the popular social media app Instagram in a post that both doxed and ridiculed our office's bathroom. But it didn't end there. The following week, Wilson sent me numerous threatening text messages, which, in this current political climate, has left me on edge and afraid. But I didn't want to be a victim. I wanted to put myself in Mr. Wilson's shoes.

• 5:10Adam Friedland?

Why was this beloved comedic actor being mean? Perhaps the answer was right in front of us this whole time. On NBC, during prime time, before Parks and Rec, I think it was 8 on Thursdays. Perhaps art bled its way into reality. Perhaps he'd been driven insane after eight years of publicly broadcasted torture. Kind of like Heath Ledger Joker. I'm not a licensed psychiatrist, and in order to confirm my theory, I needed to consult with one. So I called up friend of the show, sexual misbehavior expert, James Foley, to see if my suspicions were proven correct.

• 5:51Speaker 05

  James Foley.

• 5:52Adam Friedland?

Hi, James. Adam Friedland, Adam Friedland Show. How are you?

• 5:56Speaker 05

  I'm doing great.

• 5:57Adam Friedland?

I miss you, brother. You doing well?

• 6:00Speaker 05

I miss you more. I'm doing fantastic.

• 6:03Adam Friedland?

No, you couldn't possibly. No, but yeah, thank you. Wait, quick question. Okay, this is kind of random. But if someone was played like a complete joke, or like a clown, or a buffoon, for maybe, let's say, eight seasons on a popular television show, where America just loved laughing at them, just getting their comeuppance, and just stepping on rakes, and metaphorically speaking, having their pants pulled down and then exposing their minuscule genitalia to... I don't know. Ignore that part.

• 6:47Adam Friedland?

If someone plays a heel, right,

• 6:53Adam Friedland?

in an incredibly popular context on television, let's say NBC during primetime, before Parks and Rec, maybe. Okay? Would that potentially affect their real life? Right?

• 7:07Speaker 05

I would think so. I would definitely... When you say potentially, I would definitely think it would have a drag on their emotions.

• 7:16Adam Friedland?

Yeah. Kind of like a Benoit situation.

• 7:21Speaker 05

I don't know who Benoit is.

• 7:23Adam Friedland?

  Chris Benoit, from WWE.

• 7:26Speaker 05

  Oh, oh, okay.

• 7:28Adam Friedland?

Yeah. Anyway, okay, thanks a lot. I will keep you. I think that answers my question.

• 7:33Speaker 05

  Okay, thank you, Ken.

• 7:34Adam Friedland?

  Okay, bye.

• 7:38Adam Friedland?

So what can we do as an audience where we see a beloved individual teetering towards self-harm? We can all go and see Code 3, which is the new movie that he's in with Lil' Rel. It's in theaters now. It's about an ambulance. It's hilarious. Guys, enjoy the show.

• 7:59Adam Friedland?

This episode is sponsored by Ro. Ro Sparks are a two-in-one prescription treatment for guys who need a secret weapon. It's the new wave. • 9:07Adam Friedland?

Our next guest is a legendary Hollywood actor whose new film, Code 3, comes out this month on the 12th. Please welcome Rainn Wilson, everyone. Big eyes. Ooh, I like that. With the drink. You're like a...

• 9:23Speaker 05

They used to do that on the old talk shows with the cocktails. They would come out like with cocktails.

• 9:27Adam Friedland?

Well, I think they were all hammered.

• 9:29Speaker 05

  They were.

• 9:29Adam Friedland?

I think, uh... Yeah, what's his name? Ed Sullivan?

• 9:33Speaker 05

I only did Leno. Obviously, I was not old enough to do Carson, but they would have the drink cart like down the hall, wheel in the drink cart.

• 9:41Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 9:42Speaker 05

Like with the, you know, the shakers and the cognac and everything.

• 9:44Adam Friedland?

  How was Jay?

• 9:46Speaker 05

You know, he was nothing but nice and supportive to me, so I...

• 9:50Adam Friedland?

  He gets too much crap.

• 9:51Speaker 05

I think he gets too much crap. He was a really good... Like, first of all, when he first started as a comic, like especially in like the late 70s and the 80s.

• 10:00Adam Friedland?

  At the store.

• 10:00Speaker 05

He was edgy. Or he was considered edgy.

• 10:04Adam Friedland?

Everyone from that era says there was one guy, and by far... He was the best and it was Mr. Jay Leno.

• 10:11Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 10:11Adam Friedland?

And for people my age were like, oh, the guy that's like Monica Lewinsky? Like, you know, we're like, that guy?

• 10:16Speaker 05

  Yeah, yeah.

• 10:16Adam Friedland?

They're like, the Republicans are crazy, the Democrats are crazy. Like, that guy was edgy. Yeah, but.

• 10:22Speaker 05

Yeah, apparently he wasn't, but he was always really nice to me and I would go on and whore myself out to promote my.

• 10:29Adam Friedland?

  He prostituted.

• 10:31Speaker 05

  Yeah, I really would.

• 10:33Adam Friedland?

  Mr. Jay Leno.

• 10:34Speaker 05

He was, apparently he was the guy in the eighties, so I let him.

• 10:39Adam Friedland?

  Oh, really?

• 10:39Speaker 05

  Have me.

• 10:40Adam Friedland?

Yeah, really. Uh, out of respect.

• 10:43Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 10:43Adam Friedland?

Yeah, I did the same for Weird Al Yankovic.

• 10:45Speaker 05

Yeah, oh, yeah, yeah, and he'll go there.

• 10:48Adam Friedland?

  He will go there.

• 10:49Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 10:49Adam Friedland?

He really does go there. Actually, apparently he's the greatest guy of all time.

• 10:54Speaker 05

  Weird Al?

• 10:54Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 10:54Speaker 05

  Al is the nicest.

• 10:56Adam Friedland?

You know him, he's a friend of yours.

• 10:57Speaker 05

Well, I also did his movie.

• 10:58Adam Friedland?

About his parents dying and then him performing that night is the most, did you know about that?

• 11:04Speaker 05

I didn't know this story, please tell.

• 11:06Adam Friedland?

His parents both died and then.

• 11:08Speaker 05

Do you want him on this show? Cause I can get him on the show. Yes.

• 11:11Adam Friedland?

Yes! Yes! I, okay, here's another thing that gets too much rap. Funny songs.

• 11:17Speaker 05

  Parody songs?

• 11:19Adam Friedland?

Funny songs are, are like, people are like, say it's the lowest common denominator. It's the funny.

• 11:25Speaker 05

  Adam Sandler's Hanukkah song?

• 11:27Adam Friedland?

Uh, well, listen, that one in, in this day and age, we can't, come on, it's too, it's too dicey these days.

• 11:33Speaker 05

You can't sing a Hanukkah song because of Gaza?

• 11:35Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yes, exactly.

• 11:37Speaker 05

  Really?

• 11:38Adam Friedland?

Out of respect for Hamas, I will not listen to it. Uh, no, no, uh, no, but.

• 11:42Speaker 05

To tell the dead parents joke.

• 11:45Adam Friedland?

  It's not a joke.

• 11:45Speaker 05

  A joke, a story, sorry.

• 11:46Adam Friedland?

Um, his. His parents, I think there was a gas leak and they both died. And he had a concert that night and he went out and he was like, I'm, you know, he's like, I gotta do.

• 11:57Speaker 05

  The show must go on.

• 11:58Adam Friedland?

Yeah, and he was like, you know. Living in an Amish paradise.

• 12:02Speaker 05

I think I lost respect for him. He should have canceled the show, I'm sorry.

• 12:07Adam Friedland?

I think he probably should have canceled the show. We're talking shit on this guy about his lowest moment in his life.

• 12:13Speaker 05

Al is the greatest guy alive. I was in his movie Weird the Al Yankovic Story. Have you seen that movie?

• 12:19Adam Friedland?

  No, wait, no.

• 12:20Speaker 05

It's very funny. They wrote a fake biopic of Al Yankovic and it's got a great cast, a lot of comic actors.

• 12:27Adam Friedland?

He's in that other movie, it's three letters.

• 12:30Speaker 05

  V H, V H, uh, V H, oh, U H F.

• 12:33Adam Friedland?

  That movie is so funny.

• 12:35Speaker 05

That's very funny, but this, this came out a couple of years back. Weird the Al Yankovic Story is very funny. It's a kind of alternate world as if Al Yankovic was more popular than, dated Madonna and was like the most popular pop star on the planet.

• 12:48Adam Friedland?

He should have been, if you asked me.

• 12:49Speaker 05

  Right?

• 12:50Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 12:50Speaker 05

How is this interview going so far?

• 12:52Adam Friedland?

It's not an interview yet, we're just, we're just feeling, we're like two dogs at the dog park sniffing each other's asses right now.

• 12:58Speaker 05

  How is this show?

• 13:00Adam Friedland?

  Oh, the show itself?

• 13:01Speaker 05

Going so far? How is the Adam Friedland Show, episode number 237 with Rainn Wilson? We're six minutes in, how's it going so far?

• 13:10Adam Friedland?

I feel like, again, like we're two dogs at the dog park smelling each other's bums.

• 13:15Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 13:15Adam Friedland?

And your shit, it smells like roses.

• 13:18Speaker 05

  Oh, right.

• 13:19Adam Friedland?

  It smells phenomenal.

• 13:20Speaker 05

Yours smells like freshly baked chocolate chip cookies.

• 13:24Adam Friedland?

Oh, thank you so much. Is that good or bad?

• 13:26Speaker 05

  I love, I love a cookie.

• 13:26Adam Friedland?

  I mean, chocolate kills dogs.

• 13:29Speaker 05

  Mmm, good point.

• 13:31Adam Friedland?

Okay, I was looking at your filmography. And you're in a film directed by Mr. Rob Zombie.

• 13:37Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 13:38Adam Friedland?

  Called, what was the name?

• 13:40Speaker 05

  House of a Thousand Corpses.

• 13:41Adam Friedland?

And, correct me if I'm wrong, did you wear costumes on the, on the set?

• 13:46Speaker 05

  I wore costumes, yeah.

• 13:47Adam Friedland?

Yeah, yeah, and there was someone that was a costumer on set?

• 13:51Speaker 05

  I imagine that there was.

• 13:52Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 13:52Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 13:53Adam Friedland?

  And her name was Amanda?

• 13:56Speaker 05

  Could have been.

• 13:57Adam Friedland?

  Friedland, perhaps?

• 13:58Speaker 05

It, uh, it could have been.

• 14:00Adam Friedland?

Yeah, um, perhaps, uh, my aunt.

• 14:03Speaker 05

Your aunt Amanda dressed me for that show?

• 14:07Adam Friedland?

  And she said, um.

• 14:08Speaker 05

She laid out my wardrobe in the trailer for me?

• 14:10Adam Friedland?

I don't know how you guys put the clothes on.

• 14:13Speaker 05

Yeah, it's usually laid out in a trailer. You've got your trailer. It says like, Rain Wilson, and you open it up and there's your wardrobe is laid out and then a convenient person comes by and they're like, here's your pants and we steam those and if you can choose, you can either wear these tennis shoes or these for this scene and there's a change of underwear in the closet, you know, let me know if you have any questions.

• 14:33Adam Friedland?

And then perhaps, um, the, perhaps there's a vote on set of, uh, who in the production is most fuckable? And perhaps my aunt wins that vote?

• 14:44Speaker 05

  Wow.

• 14:45Adam Friedland?

This is what I was told on the phone yesterday by Auntie Amanda. And I just want to know, did you vote for my aunt or not?

• 14:53Speaker 05

I would have voted for Rob Zombie's wife, Sherry Moon Zombie, because she is smoking.

• 15:00Adam Friedland?

Okay, or you didn't vote for my aunt?

• 15:02Speaker 05

  I don't remember Amanda Friedland.

• 15:03Adam Friedland?

I would have liked, oh, okay, I don't know. She said she saw you at Comic Con. You were very nice. You remembered her. But you would have remembered that she was voted most fuckable on set. Is that something that happens a lot in Hollywood? You know, where the guy, the fellers get together and they vote for who's the most fuckable?

• 15:18Speaker 05

  They do, yes, every production.

• 15:20Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 15:21Speaker 05

  Yeah, it is.

• 15:22Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, who won?

• 15:23Speaker 05

  On The Office?

• 15:24Adam Friedland?

  On The Office.

• 15:25Speaker 05

  Uh, Leslie.

• 15:26Adam Friedland?

  Jan Levinson.

• 15:27Speaker 05

  Jan Levinson Gold, yeah.

• 15:28Adam Friedland?

Yeah. I, I want to ask you, see, the annoying thing is this. Every interview, you get the question, are you tired of being Dwight or something, right?

• 15:38Speaker 05

  Sure.

• 15:38Adam Friedland?

Or being some, because it is an iconic, ubiquitous, like, American comedy, uh, like legendary character, right? And everyone asks you about getting, like, approached on the street, but they don't ask you about, like, uh, how, how, what gave birth to Dwight?

• 15:55Speaker 05

So, right down the street at NYU, um, uh, you know, I was always really good at, at, I was a theater actor. And I was always really good at comedy theater, whether it was doing sketches or a farce or doing clowny kind of characters or Shakespeare clowns or something like that. Uh, but I did pretty wide-ranging theater training, but one of the things we did is we took clowning class. And this is like. Um, who's the guy who plays Borat again? What's that guy's name?

• 16:27Adam Friedland?

  Sacha Baron Cohen.

• 16:28Speaker 05

  Sacha Baron Cohen.

• 16:28Adam Friedland?

So he went to the guy in Paris.

• 16:30Speaker 05

  He went to Gosey.

• 16:30Adam Friedland?

  The guy, right?

• 16:31Speaker 05

  Yeah, LaCocke. And that...

• 16:33Adam Friedland?

  That's funny, that's funny.

• 16:35Speaker 05

His, uh... But this woman, Gates McFadden, was our clown teacher just for a couple of weeks or months. And, um, she was actually played Doctor Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation.

• 16:48Adam Friedland?

  No!

• 16:49Speaker 05

  The beautiful redheaded woman.

• 16:51Adam Friedland?

  No! She teaches clowns?

• 16:52Speaker 05

He is a clown teacher, a master clown teacher.

• 16:56Adam Friedland?

That was a childhood, like... I didn't even, I didn't even have like, uh, know what sex was, but I was like, "I need her." Crusher was incredible.

• 17:04Speaker 05

  I think she's still available.

• 17:05Adam Friedland?

  Is she?

• 17:06Speaker 05

  Mm-hmm.

• 17:06Adam Friedland?

  And she teaches clown?

• 17:08Speaker 05

She doesn't regularly teach it, but she is capable of teaching a mean clown class. She could be your clown tutor, your private clown tutor.

• 17:17Adam Friedland?

  My, my clown teacher?

• 17:19Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 17:20Adam Friedland?

  Crusher?

• 17:20Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 17:21Adam Friedland?

What did, uh, what did, did Worf, was he funny or no?

• 17:24Speaker 05

He was hysterical. He was my voice and speech teacher.

• 17:28Adam Friedland?

  Michael Dorn? No, he wasn't.

• 17:29Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 17:29Adam Friedland?

  Michael Dorn was?

• 17:30Speaker 05

Yeah, and Patrick Stewart taught, um...

• 17:34Adam Friedland?

Uh, he taught, uh, non-disclosure agreement, uh, yeah. He taught...

• 17:39Speaker 05

So, but anyways, in this clown class, you did a lot about, you know, creating a character kind of out of nothing. And that, when you put on the red nose, it amplifies whatever you're doing. And the big mistake with like, red-nosed clowning is like, you do something clowny. And it's, and there was this exercise we did called Circle of Fire, which is basically, you put on the red nose, you go in front of people, and you can only leave the stage once you've made everyone laugh.

• 18:10Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 18:10Speaker 05

And sometimes people would be up there for forty-five minutes.

• 18:13Adam Friedland?

Yeah, because you had enemies in the class, people that like, really didn't like you.

• 18:18Speaker 05

Good, good thinking, but because it's really hard to make people... Maybe not for you, and maybe not even for me a little bit, but it's really hard to make people laugh with a red nose on your face.

• 18:31Adam Friedland?

What if you fart really loud? You just get out there, "pfft."

• 18:34Speaker 05

It's gonna, it's not gonna be that funny.

• 18:37Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 18:37Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 18:39Adam Friedland?

  No, it's always funny.

• 18:40Speaker 05

Because, no, what you think is gonna be funny doesn't work with a red nose, cause it... So what, what's really funny is being totally vulnerable.

• 18:48Speaker 05

And like, if you were to cry about like a dead relative, that would be hysterical.

• 18:53Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 18:54Speaker 05

  I'm not even kidding.

• 18:55Adam Friedland?

I cried on this show a couple of weeks ago, I don't think it was about...

• 18:57Speaker 05

  What did you cry about?

• 18:59Adam Friedland?

No, we don't have to get into it.

• 19:00Speaker 05

Alright, so I'm just saying, I'm just saying that the roots of creating a character like Dwight come from these ideas of clowns, like you go back from, you know, there have always been clowns in human history, and you can go back to the Greek comedies, and then the Roman comedies, and then Commedia d'Arte, that were traveling clown troops in wooden wagons all across Europe, and then Moliere and Shakespeare took those tropes and those ideas, put them in all their plays, and then those became like British vaudeville, that became American vaudeville, that became like, you know, Jack Benny and early television, and The Honeymooners,

• 19:39Speaker 05

and sketch comedy, and that became, you know, Monty Python, you can, you can trace clowning and some basics about building those characters back to the classics.

• 19:52Adam Friedland?

  The Torah, yeah.

• 19:53Speaker 05

There were probably Hebrew clowns, yeah, back in the, in the Old Testament.

• 19:59Adam Friedland?

The slaves in Egypt, they were like, "What, I can't be out in the sun this long."

• 20:03Speaker 05

The slaves sound like Woody Allen.

• 20:05Adam Friedland?

It's ridiculous that they... My friend, Mike Racine, used to have a joke, he's like, "Imagine having a slave and it's a fucking Jew."

• 20:16Adam Friedland?

He's like, "Those would be the worst slaves ever." Well, okay, so I...

• 20:21Speaker 05

  Do you want me to?

• 20:21Adam Friedland?

Is there a universal comedy language? Because it's very interesting, you were saying that you have to go up on stage and make someone laugh. I've been thinking this, I've thought this for years, like, what, like, if you went to like a tribe in the Amazon, and like, had that's been like sealed up?

• 20:34Speaker 05

  What would be funny, yeah.

• 20:35Adam Friedland?

What would be funny, and it's a very interesting thing to ponder, but I think there's only one thing I could, I would consider.

• 20:42Speaker 05

  Farting.

• 20:43Adam Friedland?

Balls, like just getting, hurting your balls.

• 20:45Speaker 05

  Hitting the balls, yeah.

• 20:46Adam Friedland?

Yeah, hitting the balls is funny.

• 20:46Speaker 05

That is universal. I think there's some universals. I think someone like, trying something and failing is, is universally funny. I think, you know, I think if you went in the...

• 20:59Adam Friedland?

No, you know, you did that...

• 21:00Speaker 05

If that happened in the, to the Amazon, they would be hysterical right now.

• 21:04Adam Friedland?

Crusher taught you that? Crusher taught you that?

• 21:08Speaker 05

  Go to two.

• 21:09Adam Friedland?

There's a real pro. We got a pro.

• 21:12Speaker 05

So those elements come into playing Dwight. Like, first of all, I saw Mackenzie Crook on The British Office, who was brilliant. And there was a thing that he did that no one had done as well as him before, which was to say the most absurd ludicrous things with an absolutely straight face. Without any kind of hint at all that there was a joke there. And he was so brilliant at that. And Ricky really, I think, taught him that. And Stephen Merchant.

• 21:41Adam Friedland?

Like a lack of self-awareness, basically.

• 21:43Speaker 05

Yes, but without, you couldn't see the actor, because it was a documentary. You couldn't see the actor kind of doing a weird line like, "I drink my own urine," and putting any kind of spin on it. Just like, "I drink my own urine." Just completely, and so I loved that. And then there were some other elements of like, I knew that Dwight needed, I have a huge weird head, and I needed a haircut to showcase just how gargantuan and melonic my head is. And so I sculpted that. And the self-seriousness, and I knew he was kind of like, he was a nerd and kind of a bully at the same time.

• 22:23Adam Friedland?

He's Blue Lives Matter. Yeah, he respects the police.

• 22:26Speaker 05

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, totally.

• 22:28Adam Friedland?

Or he wants to be a cop, right?

• 22:29Speaker 05

Yeah, he was a Lackawanna County Sheriff's deputy. So you put these elements together and you kind of create a clown, almost in the way that you would have a red nose on. Is your audience gonna give a fuck about this?

• 22:43Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, I think so.

• 22:45Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 22:45Adam Friedland?

  Okay, wait.

• 22:48Speaker 05

Well, my son is a huge Adam Friedland fan. What's happening?

• 22:51Adam Friedland?

Does he have emotional problems? Sorry.

• 22:53Speaker 05

  A little bit.

• 22:55Adam Friedland?

I want to get my, um, sorry, my stupid thing.

• 22:58Speaker 05

  Should we call him?

• 22:58Adam Friedland?

Yeah, call him right now. This is very unprofessional.

• 23:00Speaker 05

  I think he's in class.

• 23:02Adam Friedland?

He is? Tell him to get out of class. Send him a selfie.

• 23:11Adam Friedland?

Okay, um, I'm just gonna take one of these stupid things, I'm sorry. The person you've dialed can't take your call now. Oh my god, he blocked you.

• 23:20Speaker 05

  Uh, they go by Kenzie.

• 23:23Adam Friedland?

  They, okay.

• 23:24Speaker 05

  Mm-hmm.

• 23:24Adam Friedland?

And they're a big fan? Where do they go to school?

• 23:28Speaker 05

They're a big fan, Bard College. Here, you can leave an audio note.

• 23:32Adam Friedland?

Oh yeah, no, they're doing ketamine right now. Hello, Kenzie? Uh, I'm with your dad right now, this is Adam Friedland. Oh, you sent him the Richie Torres interview? It's so embarrassing.

• 23:42Speaker 05

  He sent it to me.

• 23:43Adam Friedland?

  He said?

• 23:44Speaker 05

  Please don't read my texts.

• 23:46Adam Friedland?

Okay, well, you're, he, oh, should I pick up?

• 23:49Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 23:50Adam Friedland?

Hey, what's up? It's Adam, I'm with your dad right now, we're chilling.

• 23:55Speaker 06

  It's who?

• 23:56Adam Friedland?

  It's Adam, uh, Friedland.

• 23:58Speaker 06

  Oh, hi, Adam Friedland.

• 24:00Adam Friedland?

  What's up, how's Bard going?

• 24:01Speaker 06

  This is so surreal.

• 24:02Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, how's Bard?

• 24:04Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 24:04Adam Friedland?

  You go to class?

• 24:05Speaker 06

  Bard, oh, it's nice.

• 24:07Adam Friedland?

  Are you wearing all black?

• 24:09Speaker 06

  No, but I do sometimes.

• 24:11Adam Friedland?

You gotta stay away from those NYC kids, they're no good.

• 24:16Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 24:17Adam Friedland?

Um, yeah, well, I heard that you like the show, I just wanted to say hello, real quick.

• 24:21Speaker 06

Oh, hi, yeah, I like the show.

• 24:23Adam Friedland?

  What'd you say?

• 24:24Speaker 06

I have a friend who's more of a fan of you than me, who likes you more than me.

• 24:28Adam Friedland?

Oh, well, I'm sorry dude, I'm, okay. Tell your friend I say what up. Alright, we gotta get back to this interview, we're doing a bad job so far.

• 24:36Speaker 06

Oh, am I on tape right now, I'm serious?

• 24:39Adam Friedland?

No, no, no, you're not on the show at all.

• 24:41Speaker 06

  Okay, bye.

• 24:41Adam Friedland?

  Alright, bye.

• 24:47Adam Friedland?

Um, wait, okay, so, uh, they released the auditions for The Office. And the amazing thing is this, and I don't like, not to frickin' blow smoke up your hole, or whatever they say.

• 25:01Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 25:01Adam Friedland?

But like, it's Seth Rogen, Judith Friedlander, Patton Oswalt, and you. And you're just white. You're like, you're, you, the character is fully fleshed out just in an audition, like a self-tape.

• 25:13Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 25:13Adam Friedland?

And it's like, it's amazing to see that like, you know, these guys are like heralded comedic actors, right? And you just destroy, I mean, you're just Dwight. So in that sense, when I watched that, I was like, oh, he's crafted this. It's not a matter of like, that the writers kind of have done it. This is a guy that's auditioning for a role. And that's, to me, made it like all the more impressive, you know?

• 25:36Speaker 05

Well, I love all those actors. They're all great. I think you're, you come out a character from a different way when you've had theater training versus when you come from a stand-up or improv or sketch background. And nothing against them, like Steve Carell comes from a sketch and improv background. And he's one of the, I think, and truly, one of the greatest American actors of all time. His dramatic work and his comedic work.

• 26:03Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 26:03Speaker 05

So, that's nothing against them. I just think when you, when you have theater training, you're, you're, you're trying to create a character, a three-dimensional character that can be funny but taken seriously and could walk down the street and you, and you would believe it. There's not anything kind of like, you want to, you know, theoretically, make that character like fully living and breathing. And so, I try and do that kind of work when I'm, you know, going in, especially on an audition. But this was one of those rare auditions where I'd seen the BBC office, loved it.

• 26:36Adam Friedland?

It's the best. How good is it?

• 26:38Speaker 05

It's so good, and I took so many things from Dear Mackenzie and just kind of put my own kind of American, kind of white trashy spin on it and...

• 26:49Adam Friedland?

  Pennsylvania Dutch, kind of.

• 26:50Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 26:51Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 26:51Speaker 05

Well, that whole thing came out of an improv, so...

• 26:54Adam Friedland?

So you brought, did you bring that in that like, you had, you're a farmer and your cousin was like, oh, so...

• 26:59Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 27:00Adam Friedland?

So, that's another question I had, like, how much was that the writers and how much was it you creating this backstory?

• 27:06Speaker 05

This is like how Greg Daniels does that, that no one else does, and it's, he's amazing in this way. Early on, I did an improv. We would just kind of improvise all the time to just kind of find the character and find the tone. And I did this improv, I, I don't even remember when it was, I think it was in the first week, and I was like, and I just improvised and I went, I, I really had not planned it at all. I was like, my name is Dwight Schrute. My father's name, Dwight Schrute. His father's name?

• 27:35Speaker 05

  Dwight Schrude.

• 27:37Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 27:38Speaker 05

Amish. And out of that, they're like, oh, we'll make him and his family Amish. And then I did something about, I brought in like family photos of like my farmer ancestors in Wisconsin and Minnesota. And Greg's ancestors, Jewish, were actual beet farmers in Poland.

• 27:56Adam Friedland?

  Uh huh.

• 27:56Speaker 05

And so like, we'll make it, we'll have this farm Amish backstory to Dwight.

• 28:02Adam Friedland?

That's perfect. It's in Pennsylvania anyway.

• 28:04Speaker 05

Yeah. So it came out of that, it came out of all that. So, you know, that's amazing writing, that you can kind of like, just kind of go with what you pick up.

• 28:14Adam Friedland?

Well, it is just a legendary, I mean, it's like Costanza level, just like comedic character. I mean, it's like, and it's just like, it's so impressive.

• 28:22Speaker 05

Oh, no, no, no. It's better than Costanza.

• 28:24Adam Friedland?

  I mean, I don't know, Costanza's pretty good.

• 28:26Speaker 05

  No, Costanza's good.

• 28:27Adam Friedland?

  Costanza's pretty good.

• 28:28Speaker 05

  Yeah, yes.

• 28:29Adam Friedland?

I mean, it's anti-Semitic for you to say, even though it's not Jewish.

• 28:31Speaker 05

  Uh huh.

• 28:32Adam Friedland?

Wait, wait, you were quoted as saying that one of the best parts about the show was that there were no Jewish characters. Is that correct?

• 28:38Speaker 05

  That's correct.

• 28:38Adam Friedland?

Yeah. I guess who, I guess there were, actually, I just made that up. Oh, Jan. Jan Levinson.

• 28:47Speaker 05

  Jan Levinson, yeah.

• 28:48Adam Friedland?

  Actually, that's probably.

• 28:49Speaker 05

  And Laura Harden, non-Jew.

• 28:51Adam Friedland?

  That's probably the most.

• 28:51Speaker 05

Playing a Jew. How could she possibly understand what it is to be Jew? I can't believe, she hasn't been canceled.

• 28:58Adam Friedland?

That has to be the most accurate character, actually. Like, she's just playing a proper Jewish psycho. She's like, my friends' moms were like that. They were all like Joseph Stalin, like.

• 29:06Speaker 05

  I, I.

• 29:07Adam Friedland?

The dinner party is my favorite.

• 29:09Speaker 05

  Of course it is.

• 29:10Adam Friedland?

  It's the best.

• 29:10Speaker 05

Of course, that's your favorite episode, and it's, it is.

• 29:12Adam Friedland?

  Is that, it's like just.

• 29:13Speaker 05

  It's next level.

• 29:14Adam Friedland?

Going to a couple whose ra, like, relationship is falling apart.

• 29:18Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 29:18Adam Friedland?

For dinner, and you bringing an old lady.

• 29:21Speaker 05

  My old babysitter.

• 29:22Adam Friedland?

  Your babysitter.

• 29:22Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 29:23Adam Friedland?

There's also an implication that, that you're like an incredible fuck. Like, throughout the entire show, that you're just like a, yeah, you devout.

• 29:30Speaker 05

Which is another, like, no, no one else would do that, would create a show, a character like Dwight. And like, let's not have him like. Fuck up in love. Let's let, let's have him bed like 20 or 30 women over the course.

• 29:42Adam Friedland?

  Incredible, incredible lover.

• 29:45Speaker 05

Yeah, yeah. You know, on Peacock, they have the extended episodes and I've seen a couple of them and it's really fun to watch those. I don't know, I'm sure that one is up, but I would love to see the extended episode of that one.

• 29:58Adam Friedland?

  Oh, my God.

• 29:59Speaker 05

Because every episode, you know, this was back in the days of network TV. We had to get every episode down to one to 21 minutes and like 40 seconds. So lots of stuff got cut out. So much stuff got cut out.

• 30:09Adam Friedland?

It's also amazing. They used to do like 25 of them, like a season. Like, that's so much work.

• 30:15Speaker 05

We would do between 21 and 25 episodes in a, in a nine month span.

• 30:20Adam Friedland?

I mean, it's just like a testament to like, that operation had to be like a well-oiled machine. Daniels had to be like fucking, like a, like an admiral or something.

• 30:29Speaker 05

It is. He is like a general and not only that, but he's making decisions about what about this location and what about this hire? And what about this payroll? And he's meeting with the network and like Staples wants to sponsor these next episodes and how do we work that? And so you're dealing with every, but the, the writer's room was like 15 strong and just amazing, amazing talent.

• 30:52Adam Friedland?

Like, like 87 year old Jewish men that were like dying. No, I'm just, obviously not.

• 30:58Speaker 05

  38 year old Jewish man.

• 31:00Adam Friedland?

I'm sure it's like Harvard kids. I'm sure it's like lampoon.

• 31:03Speaker 05

It was a lot of Harvard kids. I think my grandmother was Jewish.

• 31:07Adam Friedland?

  I'm sorry.

• 31:08Speaker 05

But we don't know, we don't know that for sure.

• 31:10Adam Friedland?

  You say that in Hollywood?

• 31:11Speaker 05

Her name is Marie Nunberg and she's from northern Romania. And the rumor is that she was Jewish, but.

• 31:20Adam Friedland?

  She could have been.

• 31:21Speaker 05

She died young and her family all died and blah, blah, blah. We don't know. We don't know. But Marie Nunberg, it sounds pretty Jewish.

• 31:26Adam Friedland?

Where's the rest of your family from? Brazil, right?

• 31:29Speaker 05

  No.

• 31:30Adam Friedland?

I thought they just showed up in like around the, you know, late 40s.

• 31:33Speaker 05

Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah, they showed up in the 1948 in Brazil.

• 31:37Adam Friedland?

  My name is Heinrich Gonzalez.

• 31:41Adam Friedland?

Yeah, we are like, we've been Brazilians this whole time.

• 31:44Speaker 05

  We are Brazilians.

• 31:45Adam Friedland?

We love like threesomes and cheating.

• 31:48Speaker 05

Did you ever see that movie, Boys from Brazil?

• 31:50Adam Friedland?

  Of course.

• 31:50Speaker 05

  In the 70s?

• 31:51Adam Friedland?

  Of course, yeah.

• 31:52Speaker 05

  Classic.

• 31:52Adam Friedland?

Yeah. Yeah, that was a Mengele, right? That it was about like Joseph Mengele.

• 31:57Speaker 05

It was about, they had cloned Hitler.

• 32:00Adam Friedland?

They cloned, and he cloned Hitler?

• 32:02Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 32:02Adam Friedland?

Yeah. That's just an insanely stupid premise for a movie that in the 1970s you can make.

• 32:08Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 32:09Adam Friedland?

You could like, you could really make that in the like Death Wish era of Hollywood. Where it's like, what if a guy's really pissed off and he just kills

• 32:17Speaker 05

  He just starts.

• 32:17Adam Friedland?

A thousand minorities, like just on the subway.

• 32:22Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 32:23Adam Friedland?

Well, okay, I, I kind of wanted to like, let's, let's, let's parlay that. You were talking about your grandmother, but like I know that you talk a lot about faith and in your like, you have a podcast and like, and you know, like in your career since then, you've, you're very upfront about spirituality. And you're Baha'i.

• 32:43Speaker 05

  I'm Baha'i, yeah.

• 32:44Adam Friedland?

  And that's an Abrahamic really? I don't, I know nothing of, of Baha'i, but it's a, it's, it's new, right?

• 32:51Speaker 05

It is an, it is an Abrahamic religion. I would say it's the fourth major Abrahamic religion.

• 32:56Adam Friedland?

Yeah, yeah. How many boys you got globally?

• 32:59Speaker 05

  Six million, so, small.

• 33:01Adam Friedland?

  Small.

• 33:02Speaker 05

  Yeah, six million, yeah.

• 33:03Adam Friedland?

And you're like the number one?

• 33:05Speaker 05

I'm number, I'm like number two or three.

• 33:09Adam Friedland?

What, we found Dizzy Gillespie was Baha'i?

• 33:12Speaker 05

  Yeah, Dizzy Gillespie was Baha'i.

• 33:13Adam Friedland?

  That's not bad.

• 33:14Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 33:15Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 33:15Speaker 05

  I went up.

• 33:16Adam Friedland?

What's your Hollywood? What's the Baha'i like, what's the thing that you guys have, have on lock?

• 33:23Adam Friedland?

  What's your, what's your, uh...

• 33:25Speaker 05

There's like seven Baha'is in Hollywood.

• 33:27Adam Friedland?

No, I mean saying like, our thing is like, we control the media and the banks. Like, what do you guys control?

• 33:31Speaker 05

Baha'is control, uh, nonprofit international development, service work.

• 33:36Adam Friedland?

That sounds evil. That sounds real evil. Yeah, yeah.

• 33:39Speaker 05

Yeah, my, uh, my bro I'm staying with, my homie, my Baha'i homie's letting me stay in his apartment in Harlem. He's off working on the international food program for Rockefeller Foundation. You know, feeding the, feeding the kids, you know, feeding the kids.

• 33:54Adam Friedland?

And you guys have got to have that...

• 33:55Speaker 05

  With sorghum.

• 33:56Adam Friedland?

  On loki. What's sorghum?

• 33:57Speaker 05

  I don't even know. It's a thing.

• 33:59Adam Friedland?

What's, so what's like the, what's the book? What's your like, uh, Bible? Like, what language is it? Cause it's not like, uh, it's not attached to like, uh, an ethnic identity, right?

• 34:09Speaker 05

Like, it's, it's an international faith, but it started in Persia.

• 34:13Adam Friedland?

  In Persia, right?

• 34:13Speaker 05

Yeah, so the, you know, the main languages, the main Baha'i writings were Persian, Farsi, and Arabic, both.

• 34:21Adam Friedland?

So, when you go to shul, or when you go to church, or...

• 34:23Speaker 05

  No church.

• 34:24Adam Friedland?

  Temple?

• 34:25Speaker 05

  No synagogue, no temple.

• 34:26Adam Friedland?

  You don't go like...

• 34:27Speaker 05

  No clergy.

• 34:28Adam Friedland?

  No clergy?

• 34:29Speaker 05

  No.

• 34:29Adam Friedland?

So what's, so like, you, like, do you, do you have songs or something?

• 34:34Speaker 05

There's, there's some songs that people make up and stuff like that. There's a bunch of Baha'i books and tablets and prayers. Um, we're here in New York City, so every year, all the Baha'is of New York City gather and elect nine Baha'is. They feel like are the most wise and spiritual to kind of...

• 34:50Adam Friedland?

  You ever get on there?

• 34:51Speaker 05

Democratically, uh, run the affairs of the Baha'i community in, in New York City. So that, and then there's, but none of them have any authority over any others. So it's completely democratically elected, uh, religious faith.

• 35:03Adam Friedland?

  Are you thinking about running?

• 35:04Speaker 05

  No campaigning.

• 35:06Adam Friedland?

  No campaigning?

• 35:07Speaker 05

Campaigning, uh, is, is illegal in the Baha'i faith.

• 35:10Adam Friedland?

So they just have to think of someone?

• 35:12Speaker 05

Yes. You, you literally go into prayer and contemplation and you write down silent ballot, nine names of the people that you want to vote for.

• 35:20Adam Friedland?

So if you get on that, you have to do it? Can you decline?

• 35:26Speaker 05

You can, you could decline. You can either just stop showing up, or you can decline for like, health reasons and some, you know, some other like hardship reasons.

• 35:34Adam Friedland?

So how, how does one practice the faith?

• 35:38Adam Friedland?

If there's no church, you can't go to the place and like, you know, sing the song?

• 35:43Speaker 05

We meet and gather at community centers or people's homes or something like that. So, Baha'is read from the holy writings in the morning and the evening. We say one prayer in the middle of the day. And there's a fasting period, kind of similar to Ramadan.

• 35:57Adam Friedland?

  Okay.

• 35:58Speaker 05

And, uh, so Baha'is do a fast. These are some of the things the Baha'is, these are what the Baha'is do in your neighborhood.

• 36:06Adam Friedland?

And your, your parents were Baha'is?

• 36:08Speaker 05

  My parents were Baha'is.

• 36:08Adam Friedland?

  You're raised Baha'is?

• 36:09Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 36:10Adam Friedland?

Is it, is it kind of, in America, is it like, kind of hippie?

• 36:13Speaker 05

It was kind of a hippie. It's this weird amalgam where, my parents were Baha'is, kind of Bohemian Baha'is from the 60s. A lot of people became Baha'is in the 60s and 70s, when people were exploring kind of different spiritual paths, like, Cat Stevens became Muslim and, you know...

• 36:28Adam Friedland?

  Yusuf Islam, I call him.

• 36:30Speaker 05

Yeah. And, uh, Steve Jobs was in a, like, a Buddhist monastery. And, um, and then there was this influx of all these Persian refugees from the revolution in 79 and 80. So you had all these like hippie Baha'is, you know, singing peace and love songs. And then this influx of Persian Baha'is.

• 38:42Speaker 05

Yeah, I left the Baha'i faith for a long time. I didn't want anything to do, like a lot of young people, with religion or faith or God or morality or anything like that.

• 38:50Adam Friedland?

  You went punk?

• 38:52Speaker 05

I went, I went punk, yeah.

• 38:54Adam Friedland?

  Were you punk? NYU?

• 38:56Speaker 05

  Yeah, I, well.

• 38:57Adam Friedland?

86 NYU. When you're listening, Replacements.

• 39:01Speaker 05

I got a buzz cut and dyed my hair black.

• 39:03Adam Friedland?

  Buzz cut and black?

• 39:04Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 39:05Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 39:05Speaker 05

Yeah. I look kind of like Henry Rollins a little bit.

• 39:08Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 39:08Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 39:09Adam Friedland?

What were your bands when you were punk?

• 39:12Speaker 05

You know, I wasn't really that hardcore because I was like Clash, you know, stuff like that.

• 39:17Adam Friedland?

  What's wrong with that?

• 39:18Speaker 05

Well, yeah, but I wasn't like.

• 39:19Adam Friedland?

  Best band?

• 39:20Speaker 05

I wasn't like, I wasn't like going all like Black Flag and, you know.

• 39:27Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah. Too scary.

• 39:29Speaker 05

Yeah. I don't want to get hurt. And smelly, a little bit smelly.

• 39:32Adam Friedland?

I like the, yeah, my first, my grandma gave me 20 bucks. I got a three-CD set, self-titled London Calling and Combat Rock.

• 39:41Speaker 05

  Oh, amazing.

• 39:42Adam Friedland?

  When I was like 13.

• 39:43Speaker 05

  Right, life-changing.

• 39:44Adam Friedland?

That's what I thought. I was punk too.

• 39:46Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 39:46Adam Friedland?

And then my mom was like, fucking, you're an idiot, you're a Jewish. And I was like, I'm.

• 39:51Speaker 05

There's a lot of great Jewish punks.

• 39:54Adam Friedland?

Who? Henry Rollins? Not Jewish? I can't think of one.

• 39:58Speaker 05

  Jell-O be off, bro.

• 39:59Adam Friedland?

  Ugh.

• 40:03Adam Friedland?

What's he on about? You know, he has got the same voice as the B-52's guy? No one says that, right?

• 40:11Adam Friedland?

  It's annoying.

• 40:12Speaker 05

  That's true.

• 40:13Adam Friedland?

The government doesn't trust me. President Reagan. Yeah, it's whatever, dude. Anyway, I... Wait, so I've been to the Baha'i temple in Haifa in Israel.

• 40:25Speaker 05

  You have?

• 40:25Adam Friedland?

Yeah. It's a new religion. You guys, you think about maybe get the hell out of there. You don't need to get be involved in that crap.

• 40:34Speaker 05

We were there before, certainly not before the Palestinians or the Jews.

• 40:41Adam Friedland?

  No, no, no.

• 40:41Speaker 05

But Baha'is were, you know, the Baha'i Holy Land was coming to existence, you know, late 19th century, early 20th century. So Baha'is are so like neutral about the whole thing.

• 40:52Adam Friedland?

So you guys are wait and see? That's your vibe?

• 40:55Speaker 05

Baha'is are just trying to survive and keep our holy lands intact.

• 40:58Adam Friedland?

  It's a really pretty place.

• 40:59Speaker 05

And just kind of like, please make peace and stop fighting and it's beautiful. And, uh, yeah, but it was, you know, it was, it was pretty intense because the war was raging as the Baha'i temples were being built and the administrative center was being built. And then, then there was the, you know, the 1948 and, and stuff. And we weren't sure like where, where's the Jewish state and the Palestinian state? And how is that going to subdivide the Baha'i?

• 41:24Adam Friedland?

  You guys were just gardening.

• 41:26Speaker 05

We're just like, yeah, just pruning shrubs.

• 41:28Adam Friedland?

It's really beautiful that the Baha'i gardens.

• 41:30Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 41:30Adam Friedland?

I mean, the buildings, I was like looking online, the one in India is really stunning. The Lotus Temple.

• 41:35Speaker 05

  Lotus Temple.

• 41:35Adam Friedland?

Yes, it's really, you guys have nice places.

• 41:38Speaker 05

Baha'is are very good at building houses of worship. They really are.

• 41:41Adam Friedland?

The, the community, you pay a tithing? Is that, how, how do they afford that?

• 41:46Speaker 05

You donate whatever you want to donate. But there is another thing called...

• 41:54Speaker 05

Now I'm forgetting the name of it. I'm blanking on the name. But where we pay 9% of all profit over, it's kind of like a tithe. Over and above all essential costs. So, once you pay your rent, your insurance, and blah, blah, blah, and your kid's tuition, and you know, the cost of living, electricity, cellphone, blah, blah, blah, blah. Anything extra, you pay 9%.

• 42:18Adam Friedland?

So, you have to like, ask your accountant to figure that out?

• 42:20Speaker 05

I do. That's what I literally do. Craig Tesler, Jew.

• 42:23Adam Friedland?

Of course. You shouldn't let him near your money, but anyway.

• 42:27Speaker 05

  Too late.

• 42:27Adam Friedland?

No, but like, so, wait, so, I'm just interested, because I was reading about it, and I was like, I'd rather just ask you about it. But there was a guy named Bob, right?

• 42:35Speaker 05

  The Bob.

• 42:36Adam Friedland?

  The Bob.

• 42:37Speaker 05

Which means the gate in Arabic. B-A-B.

• 42:39Adam Friedland?

And then, there was an offshoot that became the Baha'i, right? From the Bobists.

• 42:45Speaker 05

Yes and no. It was, it was a movement, kind of like John the Baptist had a religious spiritual movement that then became Christianity. And Christianity came out of John the Baptist movement. Saying like, there is a Messiah that's coming, there's someone greater than me. It's gonna be, it's gonna rock your world, it's gonna be amazing. And then Jesus gets baptized, and sees the dove, and the spirit of God, and et cetera. It's kind of similar to that. So, there was this religious movement called Bobbyism. Followers of the Bob, who claimed to be a new prophet in this Abrahamic tradition. And he kept saying, there's a Messiah even greater than me that's coming imminently. And then Baha'u'llah is the founder of the Baha'i faith. His name means the glory of God.

• 43:30Speaker 05

  And Baha'is are...

• 43:32Adam Friedland?

  Baba...

• 43:33Speaker 05

  Baha'u'llah.

• 43:34Adam Friedland?

Wow. You guys have beef with Gary DeLaBate? He's kind of making... With Baba Booey?

• 43:40Speaker 05

  Baba Booey.

• 43:41Adam Friedland?

And then, there was a third prophet named Baba Booey.

• 43:46Speaker 05

  Do you believe in God?

• 43:48Adam Friedland?

  I, I, it would be nice, but I don't, it's

• 43:52Speaker 05

  Are you a Judist?

• 43:54Adam Friedland?

Uh, no, I didn't have anything to do with that.

• 43:57Speaker 05

No, like Buddhist, but so many Jews

• 44:00Adam Friedland?

Oh, I thought you meant Judists.

• 44:01Speaker 05

The Old Testament is so like, um

• 44:04Adam Friedland?

  We didn't do anything.

• 44:05Speaker 05

I didn't have anything to do with that.

• 44:06Adam Friedland?

  We, it was the Romans.

• 44:08Speaker 05

  It was the Ro-

• 44:09Adam Friedland?

We just, we may have suggested.

• 44:11Speaker 05

  It was-

• 44:11Adam Friedland?

We may have suggested, maybe you wanted, maybe if you could, maybe would, maybe cruci- if you would crucify him.

• 44:18Speaker 05

I just read this whole thing. I read a whole book.

• 44:21Adam Friedland?

  It was the Romans?

• 44:22Speaker 05

  About how

• 44:23Adam Friedland?

  Jewish, Buddhist?

• 44:24Speaker 05

How they did that spin, trying to get it away from the Romans, and the reason they did that, the early Christians, and they spun it towards the Jews.

• 44:32Adam Friedland?

  Because the empire-

• 44:32Speaker 05

Because they feared the persecution from the, the Roman Empire, especially in those first 300 years.

• 44:37Adam Friedland?

And then the whole empire converted.

• 44:40Speaker 05

And then the whole empire converted, but before that, if they had in their writings, "Hey, our Messiah was put to death by the Romans", then the Romans would come in and be like, "What the fuck?"

• 44:51Adam Friedland?

Wait, so do you abide by like, kind of like, uh, the New Testament, the Old Testament, kind of the Quran, or is that?

• 44:57Speaker 05

  Yes, the Baha'is accept-

• 44:58Adam Friedland?

Do you take from all them?

• 44:59Speaker 05

We, we absolutely do, and Baha'is accept all of the world's holy books, including Bud- uh, Buddhism and Hindu, and we read the Bhagavad Gita and the writings of the Buddha, has all of our book.

• 45:12Adam Friedland?

So you have to know every single one?

• 45:14Speaker 05

  We have it memorized.

• 45:14Adam Friedland?

  And you don't-

• 45:15Speaker 05

Ask me any line, any page from any book.

• 45:17Adam Friedland?

What's the best book? What's the best one? Our one sucks. The Jewish one is like ridiculous.

• 45:24Speaker 05

  There's some good chapters.

• 45:25Adam Friedland?

There's, it's, God is just so-

• 45:27Speaker 05

  It's kind of like Dune.

• 45:28Adam Friedland?

  God is so insecure.

• 45:29Speaker 05

  There's some good chapters, yeah.

• 45:30Adam Friedland?

God is like, "Oh, you don't respect me? I'm gonna smite you."

• 45:33Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 45:33Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah. God's like, he's, he's mean.

• 45:36Speaker 05

God changes, though, over the course of the Hebrew Bible, you know, there's, there's an evolution as you read it, you can kind of see his-

• 45:43Adam Friedland?

  Have you read the Ha'atua?

• 45:45Speaker 05

I haven't read the Ha'atua girl. Did she sell her memoir?

• 45:49Adam Friedland?

No, it's an ancient text, the Ha'atua.

• 45:51Speaker 05

  The Ha'atua girl?

• 45:51Adam Friedland?

Yeah, it's an ancient, no, it's not, oh, I didn't know that. You've never read the Ha'atua? It sounds like a Jewish prayer, doesn't it?

• 45:58Speaker 05

  This is lunacy.

• 45:59Adam Friedland?

  What do you mean lunacy?

• 46:00Speaker 05

People watch this show. People watch this show.

• 46:04Adam Friedland?

What, are you hating on the show?

• 46:05Speaker 05

  A little bit.

• 46:06Adam Friedland?

  Why?

• 46:07Speaker 05

  I can't finish a sentence.

• 46:09Adam Friedland?

  Have you read the Ha'atua?

• 46:13Adam Friedland?

So Baha'i like everyone? They're nice to everyone?

• 46:17Speaker 05

  They're nice to everyone.

• 46:18Adam Friedland?

Yeah, are they, they're nice to women? Women could be...

• 46:21Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 46:22Adam Friedland?

They're nice to gay people, or they're nice to...

• 46:24Speaker 05

  Nah.

• 46:25Adam Friedland?

  They don't like gay people?

• 46:26Speaker 05

Well, they like gay people, but...

• 46:28Adam Friedland?

Why do they like gay people?

• 46:29Speaker 05

Well, this is, this is a, this is a, this is a matter of a great deal of...

• 46:34Adam Friedland?

So you guys are like Rastafarians? You're like, you're like a spiritual, but you still don't like gay people?

• 46:40Speaker 05

There's that Abrahamic thing about marriage and men and women and stuff that is still in the Baha'i faith, and I, I really struggle with it.

• 46:48Adam Friedland?

  Can you change the rules?

• 46:49Speaker 05

Personally, I don't know how to do that. I really struggle with it, but if I like 90% of the faith, then that's enough, that's enough for me.

• 46:57Adam Friedland?

What other parts do you not like?

• 47:01Speaker 05

Um, that's the main one, yeah.

• 47:04Adam Friedland?

Religion is kind of a pick and choose.

• 47:05Speaker 05

But it's a little different in the Baha'i faith. It's not like, there's no hell, there's no damnation, sin doesn't work the same way. It's kind of like, here's the moral laws, but they're there for your guidance. So it's, it's much less, there's none of this kind of like gays going to hell, gay evil, stuff like that. It's accept and love everyone.

• 47:24Adam Friedland?

They're just being bad, they're being bad boys. Are you, you're a blazer, or no?

• 47:28Speaker 05

  I used to be, yeah.

• 47:29Adam Friedland?

You used to be, you're a sober gentleman.

• 47:31Speaker 05

  I'm sober, yeah, I'm a sober gentleman.

• 47:32Adam Friedland?

What was, what was your vice back in the day?

• 47:34Speaker 05

  Mostly alcohol.

• 47:35Adam Friedland?

  Booze?

• 47:36Speaker 05

  Yeah, yeah.

• 47:37Adam Friedland?

  During your New York days?

• 47:38Speaker 05

But yeah, and I had some, uh, some, some drug phases. I dated a coke dealer for a while, that was not...

• 47:44Adam Friedland?

  A girl coke dealer?

• 47:45Speaker 05

Yeah, down on Wall Street, yeah.

• 47:48Adam Friedland?

Oh, to like Wall Street guys?

• 47:49Speaker 05

She had, yeah, she had a leather satchel and she would open up, she had everything in it.

• 47:52Adam Friedland?

Wow, she's cool. What's she up to now? She works in the Jewish community?

• 47:56Speaker 05

  She's running JP Morgan.

• 47:58Adam Friedland?

  She is?

• 47:58Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 47:59Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 47:59Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 48:00Adam Friedland?

Wow, that's a really cool kind of girlfriend. She definitely fucked your life up. You were, that was definitely like a...

• 48:06Speaker 05

It didn't, it didn't help, yeah.

• 48:08Adam Friedland?

Well, no, just in a like a, like a high fidelity sense, like remembering all the, the girls of the past.

• 48:13Speaker 05

  Right.

• 48:13Adam Friedland?

She, you're like, you were like, uh, along for the ride.

• 48:16Speaker 05

This was for a nerdy Baha'i boy from suburban Seattle, that was a sharp left turn.

• 48:20Adam Friedland?

Oh my God, New, like 21 New York City.

• 48:24Speaker 05

  Exactly.

• 48:24Adam Friedland?

  Oh my God.

• 48:25Speaker 05

  23 and a half, 24, yeah.

• 48:28Adam Friedland?

We're talking about the film, okay? Stop it, no, no, it's not that good.

• 48:33Adam Friedland?

It's really, some of them are rude.

• 48:35Speaker 05

Rain's team wanted me to pass along a message. He's totally fine to talk about The Office, but he doesn't want it to be a main focus in the interview and appreciate keeping that topic to more of a minimum.

• 48:44Adam Friedland?

We're talking about the Baka Davidah.

• 48:45Speaker 05

  That's pretty true.

• 48:46Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 48:46Speaker 05

I think that's pretty true. I don't know that I ever said that to them, but they glean that. But I'm happy to talk about The Office.

• 48:52Adam Friedland?

Well, no. I want to talk about your new film, Code 3. You want to tell us a little bit about who you play, what it's about, and then we can kind of get into...

• 49:03Speaker 05

You know how you talked about the Midwestern person saying thank you and not really meaning it?

• 49:09Adam Friedland?

So interested in hearing about your new movie. Tell us about your movie. Is it a little bit of Bringing Out the Dead? A little bit?

• 49:18Speaker 05

No, it's not as artsy and dark as that. It's more funny.

• 49:22Adam Friedland?

  It's more funny?

• 49:23Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 49:23Adam Friedland?

You did a ride-along with real paramedics? And how many, how long did you do that for?

• 49:29Speaker 05

Like six or eight hours in South Central. No bag.

• 49:32Adam Friedland?

Well, that's like, kind of, there's a real intimacy in doing that job, because you enter people's homes. You see people's lives. And you see people's...

• 49:44Speaker 05

And you're riding with them in the back of an ambulance to a hospital for half an hour.

• 49:48Adam Friedland?

  Right, in moments of crisis.

• 49:49Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 49:49Adam Friedland?

Right? You see like, a son become the man of the house. You see people in their, some of the worst moments of their lives.

• 49:56Speaker 05

They've pissed their pants, or they've got vomit on them.

• 49:58Adam Friedland?

Yeah. And then you also see the different ways that people live. Right? And you see like, you see like, and I did, I was in Israel for a year doing it, and I really saw the difference in like, the way Arabs and Jews lived, and the way that Orthodox and secular lived. And it was intense. I mean, it was, there were a couple funny parts of it, but like, there was a hypochondriac, like a Russian lady, and me and my friend, she would call like, every three days, and she was just a liar. And then, yeah, another time we had to go to a funeral, and, because they were afraid that, it was like this big tragedy, that like, a police officer was killed in the line of duty, and they were afraid of like, people passing out because of the local tragedy.

• 50:43Adam Friedland?

And we didn't speak like... Our Hebrew was pretty bad.

• 50:47Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 50:47Adam Friedland?

And there was this woman in like-

• 50:48Speaker 05

So you were just there just in case?

• 50:50Adam Friedland?

Just in case. And there was this woman like who had like smelling salts and she's like, she was walking around like there were crying women like, like, uh, and she'd make them smell it and slap them across the face. And they had me and my friend Matt behind the rabbi giving the eulogy. And we were just watching this lady just slapping other women in the face.

• 51:08Speaker 05

  That's insane.

• 51:09Adam Friedland?

And we were trying as hard as we could not to laugh.

• 51:11Speaker 05

  Oh, my god.

• 51:12Adam Friedland?

It was the hardest I've ever, like, I was like about to pee my pants at a funeral.

• 51:17Speaker 05

But you know what? They should have every 19-year-old be a paramedic for a while.

• 51:20Adam Friedland?

  No, it's not. It's, well, it's-

• 51:22Speaker 05

  Yeah, they should.

• 51:23Adam Friedland?

  You, you really see, like-

• 51:25Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 51:26Adam Friedland?

I mean, like, you really see people in moments of extreme crisis.

• 51:31Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 51:31Adam Friedland?

  And-

• 51:32Speaker 05

Mostly at their worst and occasionally at their best, I imagine?

• 51:35Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, and you see-

• 51:36Speaker 05

You see humanity rising through, through the ashes?

• 51:39Adam Friedland?

Exactly. You see how families are immediately reshuffled and reorganized and like-

• 51:45Speaker 05

  Wow.

• 51:46Adam Friedland?

It's, it's, um, a doctor sees the end result. This is like a very, there's an, yeah, there's a real personal intimate aspect to it. And yeah, I think I was maybe a little too young. I think it was like a little bit like intense and I think like-

• 52:00Speaker 05

Well, this is what Code 3 deals with, is kind of the mental health ramifications of these frontline workers and EMS workers who are paid essentially minimum wage, maybe a little bit more, that we entrust to save our lives. You know, in the movie, we tried to make it a comedy. It is a comedy. It's very funny. It's a very good movie. I hope you'll see it. And I really do mean that. It, it, audiences are loving it. And the EMS frontline worker community are loving this movie.

• 52:27Adam Friedland?

  They feel like they're like-

• 52:28Speaker 05

  This is like their story.

• 52:29Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 52:30Speaker 05

And but it's so- But it's so rare to- It's so rare to do a movie that's like funny, entertaining. If you want to just go watch an action comedy and eat popcorn, that's great. But it also is like about something. And it really is about looking at the underbelly of the American healthcare system.

• 52:44Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 52:45Speaker 05

And how these poor people were paying essentially minimum wage and we entrusting them to save our lives.

• 52:51Adam Friedland?

  It also costs like $8,000.

• 52:53Speaker 05

Yeah, and then you get your bill from the hospital. Hospital, yeah, for ten or twenty grand and it's just all, it's all, it's all fucked up. But I did ride-alongs with the fire department in South Central LA. And that was fascinating because down there, there's no healthcare. I mean, they've shut down all the hospitals. Because all the hospitals are owned by conglomerates and they're like, this South Central hospital's not making us any money, they shut it all down. There's no walk-in clinics, there's no like, you know.

• 53:21Adam Friedland?

It's like a food desert for hos- for medical care.

• 53:24Speaker 05

Yeah, for healthcare and there's barely any doctors.

• 53:26Adam Friedland?

  It's fucked up.

• 53:27Speaker 05

And so they call 911 for everything, the people down there.

• 53:30Adam Friedland?

  Oh my god.

• 53:30Speaker 05

Because they kind of have to. And the firemen are the heroes down there. The cops are kind of, obviously, there's some issues there. But the firemen are the heroes. The firemen are getting them, getting their locked keys out of the car, you know, breaking down bathroom doors, getting a guy some diabetes medicine, taking someone to the hospital because they can't get an Uber, like. And these guys, these are the most like white bread dudes you could imagine. These, all these firemen down there. But they're cheered wherever they go in South Central. You don't hear that story. It was really interesting. But one of the, the darkest call we went on that night was,

• 54:12Speaker 05

and this happens occasionally, this woman had fallen out of bed and needed the firemen to bring straps and get her back up on the bed because she weighed about 500 pounds. So they needed like four hardy men to kind of get her back up on the bed. The family couldn't do it. That was really intense and, but that's the kind of work that they were doing. But you're right, you're going into people's homes.

• 54:36Adam Friedland?

You're doing it every day, too.

• 54:37Speaker 05

You're doing it twelve hour shifts, you know, three or four days a week.

• 54:41Adam Friedland?

There were laps, though. You're saying that it was a comedy, but I remember they just like play, we like played Black Eyed Peas or like LMFA or like pumping on the way to like. Like, because there's just like a sense of humor. Because these people are like about to deal with some fucked up shit. So then they play some like, you know, goofy like EDM track.

• 54:58Speaker 05

No, no industry has a more gallows sense of humor than that.

• 55:01Adam Friedland?

These people are seeing just fentanyl overdose, gunshot, yeah, yeah. I, yeah, telling that story, I think is very worthwhile. And I haven't really seen that story told very much. And like from my experience, it's like, that seems like an incredibly like worthwhile, like and noble like thing to depict.

• 55:20Speaker 05

And with that, my job here is done.

• 55:22Adam Friedland?

  Bye!

• 55:24Speaker 05

  Bye.

• 55:27Adam Friedland?

Is that what I sound like?

• 55:30Speaker 05

No, that's your imitation of like, a Jew circa 1000 B.C. Like Moses, why'd he go up to the mountain for?

• 55:38Adam Friedland?

And then I went to bed with her.

• 55:42Adam Friedland?

She was a fabulous woman, and I went to bed with her. And she was my analyst.

• 55:47Speaker 05

How do you, how do you deal with the Woody Allen of it all? Do you still watch Woody Allen movies? Yeah.

• 55:55Adam Friedland?

The best, one of the best ever.

• 55:56Speaker 05

Even the bad ones? You watch them all?

• 55:58Adam Friedland?

  I watch every single one.

• 55:59Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 56:00Adam Friedland?

  What's your favorite?

• 56:02Speaker 05

Oh, Annie Hall is my favorite. But there's so many great ones.

• 56:04Adam Friedland?

  I rewatched this weekend.

• 56:06Speaker 05

  You did this weekend?

• 56:07Adam Friedland?

I'm going back to my old friends, yeah.

• 56:08Speaker 05

Yeah. Now, what about the cancellation and the thing and the whole thing?

• 56:13Adam Friedland?

  Uh, I don't know. I mean, like, it's a movie.

• 56:15Speaker 05

  Ronan Farrow and the...

• 56:17Adam Friedland?

  I don't know. I mean, it's a movie, right?

• 56:19Speaker 05

I'm asking you if, generationally, because I don't know, like, I know I stand on it, which I'm the same way. I'm like, listen, if we're gonna separate the art from the artist, like, we're not gonna listen to Beethoven because he fucked his seventh daughter, or we're not gonna listen to...

• 56:32Adam Friedland?

  He did.

• 56:32Speaker 05

I don't know. Chopin because he was a racist, and we're not gonna...

• 56:35Adam Friedland?

  Caravaggio is a murderer.

• 56:37Speaker 05

Yeah, how are you, how do you differentiate that? It's a, it's a really tricky moral argument. It's really tough.

• 56:44Adam Friedland?

It's also, it just seems like it's like this horrific thing that, I don't know, like, I don't know.

• 56:49Speaker 05

Yeah, and it's also very he said, she said, and it's not, doesn't seem like there's like damning evidence of like...

• 56:55Adam Friedland?

I don't, am I the one to adjudicate it? I mean, I think that we have these, this notion of like...

• 57:00Speaker 05

Well, Roman Polanski was adjudicated. Would you watch Chinatown?

• 57:05Adam Friedland?

I watched, I watched Bitter Moon the other day. So good. Have you seen it?

• 57:11Speaker 05

  No. What's it called?

• 57:12Adam Friedland?

  It's so horny.

• 57:14Speaker 05

  Bitter Moon?

• 57:14Adam Friedland?

Yeah, the one where they're, they're on a cruise ship, yeah.

• 57:18Speaker 05

  No.

• 57:18Adam Friedland?

There's a milk scene. It's one of the sexiest scenes I've ever seen.

• 57:22Speaker 05

  Sign me up. Bitter Moon.

• 57:23Adam Friedland?

Yeah, you gotta watch it. How do you adjudicate it then?

• 57:28Speaker 05

I watch the art because I just feel like we're gonna get in a bunch of trouble if we're gonna try and like cancel the art made by people who are racist sexist, you know, abusive, uh, whatever. I'm not sure how to play that one out and maybe we'd love to hear from you in the comments section. If you have ideas about...

• 57:48Adam Friedland?

  What's your favorite Wagner?

• 57:50Speaker 05

  Yeah, exactly.

• 57:51Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 57:52Speaker 05

  The Gouvernance.

• 57:53Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, I like the Tannhauser.

• 57:56Speaker 05

  Tannhauser?

• 57:57Adam Friedland?

The, yeah, the, what do you call it? The epic. The epic one, yeah, what's it called?

• 58:02Speaker 05

  Flight of the Valkyries?

• 58:03Adam Friedland?

No, that, that's played out dude.

• 58:05Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 58:06Adam Friedland?

  That's hack, yeah.

• 58:07Speaker 05

  So 1979.

• 58:08Adam Friedland?

I'm over it dude. Uh, no, the Tannhauser, whatever, the, there's one part of it that's stunning. But like, yeah, he hated Jewish people, I don't know.

• 58:16Speaker 05

And I, but I love, I love the Looney Tunes where they do the Wagner opera. "Oh, Boom Hilda, you are so lovely. Yes, I know it, I can't help it."

• 58:28Adam Friedland?

I mean Hitler had a lot of great paintings. I mean, let's just be, let's be honest though. Uh, do you play music?

• 58:34Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 58:34Adam Friedland?

What, what do you play? Seattle grunge?

• 58:37Speaker 05

I play the skin flute and I play the...

• 58:40Adam Friedland?

  No, you don't.

• 58:41Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 58:42Adam Friedland?

  Did you guys catch that?

• 58:44Speaker 05

I also play a little guitar and drums.

• 58:47Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 58:47Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 58:48Adam Friedland?

  What are...

• 58:49Speaker 05

And I played the bassoon in college, in a high school.

• 58:52Adam Friedland?

  What is a bassoon?

• 58:54Speaker 05

  Fuck you!

• 58:54Adam Friedland?

In my mind, I think kazoo.

• 58:56Speaker 05

Fuck you! What is a bassoon? You know what a bassoon is, it's not a kazoo.

• 59:00Adam Friedland?

  A bassoon sounds like a...

• 59:01Speaker 05

  You shit.

• 59:02Adam Friedland?

It sounds like an antiquated racial slur. Like in the 1800s, "A bunch of bassoons came..."

• 59:08Speaker 05

Bassoons came down to my world.

• 59:10Adam Friedland?

"I don't want my daughter with no bassoon." What is a bassoon?

• 59:12Speaker 05

You know what a bassoon is! You don't claim ignorance.

• 59:15Adam Friedland?

  In my mind, it's kazoo.

• 59:17Speaker 05

  You don't really believe that.

• 59:18Adam Friedland?

  I only know rock, bro.

• 59:26Adam Friedland?

Rain Wilson, everyone. I'm with, I'm with legend.
