• 0:29Speaker 01

I hate cheese. I really hate it. In a way that like...

• 0:34Josh Horowitz?

  Lily?

• 0:35Speaker 01

I know, I know. I really, really do.

• 0:37Josh Horowitz?

We had a good thing going and now it's over.

• 0:38Speaker 01

  I know, I know.

• 0:39Josh Horowitz?

  Is it a lactose intolerance?

• 0:40Speaker 01

No, it's not. And also, I'm French. I should like it.

• 0:43Josh Horowitz?

  What a waste.

• 0:44Speaker 01

I hate it. But to the point where I'm like, if my friends bring it to my house, I'm like, it has to be gone. Once the night is over, you have to take it home. I don't want it in my fridge. It's like a phobia. I really hate it.

• 0:55Speaker 03

Prepare your ears, humans. Happy, Sad, Confused begins.

• 1:03Josh Horowitz?

I'm Josh Horowitz and today on Happy, Sad, Confused, Lily Rose Depp is here. Last year she had one of the buzziest TV shows of the year. And now with Nosferatu, she's having quite the moment. An amazing performance in Robert Eggers' latest and it brings her on the podcast for the very first time. Lily Rose, welcome.

• 1:21Speaker 01

Thank you. I'm so excited to be here. I love your podcast, so I'm very excited.

• 1:26Josh Horowitz?

Don't get too excited. It's not that bad.

• 1:28Speaker 01

  It's gonna be fabulous.

• 1:29Josh Horowitz?

Oh my, this is gonna change your life, Lily Rose.

• 1:31Speaker 01

  I can feel it already.

• 1:33Josh Horowitz?

How's it going? I'm catching you at the end of one of these junket days. What's been the watchwords that have come up the most? Is it like blood, corsets, vampires? What's the drinking game today?

• 1:43Speaker 01

It's been, I think because Bill's, you know, Bill's kind of, Bill's physical presence in the film has been kept quite like secret. It's been a lot of questions about like what it was like to see him for the first time on set and everything. Because he is so incredible in this film and so just transformed. I mean, you don't, Bill Skarsgård is nowhere to be found, you know? So I think a lot of people are interested. What that was like to see him on set for the first time, which was quite spooky.

• 2:14Josh Horowitz?

I feel like people might begin to think I'm on the Nosferatu payroll because Aaron did the podcast, Bill's going to do the podcast, you're doing the podcast. I love this movie.

• 2:22Speaker 01

  Amazing.

• 2:22Josh Horowitz?

Eggers' work so much. Talk to me about, it must be a moment when you find out, look, you've been doing this for a minute, but like to get the call, you're gonna be essentially the lead. It's called Nosferatu, but let's be real, Lily Rose is the lead here, guys.

• 2:36Speaker 01

Well, it is, it's definitely told through Ellen's eyes, which I think is so cool because it's a perspective that we haven't seen before in, in, you know, Nosferatu's of the past, and so I was really excited about that. But, I mean, this was like a call that I was, you know, that I couldn't, I couldn't believe I was getting. I have always been a huge fan of Rob's work. I think he's such a special and singular filmmaker. I feel like there's really nobody like him and, you know, you feel like you're watching, or like you know you're watching a Robert Eggers movie. When you're watching a Robert Eggers movie, he is like, oh, really like a world builder like no other. And so, he was like a real bucket list director for me.

• 3:18Speaker 01

And so, when I got the opportunity to audition for this, I was like, oh my god.

• 3:23Josh Horowitz?

No, he's the cool kids like favorite. It's like, you know, you put like Luca, Ari Aster, Eggers, that's like, come on.

• 3:29Speaker 01

He's the coolest, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 3:31Josh Horowitz?

  He's in that club.

• 3:31Speaker 01

He really is, yeah, he's, and, and, and for good reason. I mean, I think from the very beginning, from The Witch, you know, he, he just never misses. Like, he builds these worlds out in a way that I've like never seen before. And he's so obsessed with like history and, you know, kind of dark myths and everything that you, when you watch his movies, you almost feel like you're watching like an unearthed, like something that's been like unearthed from the past. And that's what I think is something that makes his film so special.

• 4:01Josh Horowitz?

Okay, I want to circle around to it because we do have the luxury of a little time. Because the first time, and I don't know if you recall this, I wouldn't expect you to, but I spoke to you actually for Yoga Hosers.

• 4:09Speaker 01

  I remember, I do remember.

• 4:11Josh Horowitz?

  Sundance.

• 4:12Speaker 01

  We go way back.

• 4:12Josh Horowitz?

We go way back. It's crazy to think about that cast, by the way, like Kevin Smith clearly cast the hell out of that movie. What do you remember about that experience? Because that's, that's an odd one, that's an odd kind of beginning to a career.

• 4:26Speaker 01

Yeah, I love, I love that, I love that movie. I mean, I think, you know, I feel like. You know, you make a movie and you never know how it's gonna be received. And so I feel like in a lot of ways, like you, that almost can't like be a part of it. You just have to know why you make every choice that you make. And I feel like looking back at the movies, all of the movies that I've been lucky enough to be a part of, I know why I chose to be a part of every single one of them. And I feel like I took something away from, from all of them. I came away with something, um, you know, with some growth and, and they kind of all nudged me along on, on, on my way. Um, and I look back at that so fondly.

• 5:06Speaker 01

I mean, that was such a special way to kind of begin this, my, my, you know, this crazy, uh, this crazy journey into this equally crazy world. And, you know, that was a really special one. I mean, I, I, I, yeah, I love Kevin and, and Harley. These people are like family to me. I've known them since I was a kid. So, yeah, I'm very grateful that that was kind of my, my start.

• 5:27Josh Horowitz?

But you referenced it. I mean, like we can, we can kind of like look back, I think, hopefully with a smile now because like you're getting amazing reviews of this. Let's just set the scene. Like, I mean, this is a big moment for you.

• 5:35Speaker 01

  Thank you.

• 5:36Josh Horowitz?

Um, but people were rough on Kevin. Like that, that movie had some like critics and like that's a, that's, you're, you're out there, out in front.

• 5:42Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 5:42Josh Horowitz?

  With Harley.

• 5:43Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 5:44Josh Horowitz?

And you, you know, you can, you can say like, and I get it, like, of course you take away something from the experience regardless, but you're a young woman and your name is on that.

• 5:52Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 5:52Josh Horowitz?

And the reviews aren't great. Like, does that, was that like something to kind of figure out? Like, am I equipped for this? Can I?

• 5:58Speaker 01

I mean, to be honest, like I, I, I don't really even know like how much of an awareness I have that. I mean, I, I definitely was aware that like, you know, the script was out there. The story is out there. It's not for everybody.

• 6:08Josh Horowitz?

  Sure.

• 6:09Speaker 01

But I'm, I'm interested in those kinds of stories. Like I'm honestly, I've, I've always been interested in those, in those types of stories as a viewer even, you know? Like I'm, I'm, I'm definitely here for the stuff that not everybody's into. And, and, and like I was saying earlier, like, To me, like, of course, you make something and you hope that people enjoy it and that it resonates with people. But at the end of the day, that's not what's important to me. What's important to me is that, you know, I mean, of course, if people like it, that's amazing and I appreciate that. But I just need to know in my heart why I'm doing something.

• 6:40Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 6:40Speaker 01

And I like the weird stuff, you know? And so, and so to me, like, that, you know, engaging with those kinds of projects comes with the idea that, like, not everybody's gonna like it. But I'm just like, you know what, even better, you know? Because it's, there's so many kinds of people in this world. There's so many different tastes to adhere to. And you can't please everybody, so you gotta at least just do the stuff that you like, you know?

• 7:05Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, it's too much effort to, like, chase someone else, what someone else thinks is gonna be successful.

• 7:09Speaker 01

Exactly, it's just, and it's just like, it's not interesting to me. I just wanna do the stuff that I'm like, this is, this is gonna, you know, I, I wanna do this. This is cool for me for one reason or another. And I love that movie, I stand by it. I think Kevin is such a singular filmmaker as well, and has such a vision of his own. And so, yeah, I was really excited to, to be a part of that.

• 7:28Josh Horowitz?

Okay, so we're gonna zigzag back and forth, back to Eggers on this one. Okay, so audition process on this, because

• 7:34Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 7:35Josh Horowitz?

Again, I've been following Eggers' work for a while. I know he's been trying to make this for a while.

• 7:38Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 7:38Josh Horowitz?

And different casts have come and gone, and thankfully, the ships all lined up in the right way for the cast that he got here. Was this the first time, kind of, you were up for it? Like, did, yeah?

• 7:49Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, so I had heard whispers of, of the fact that this movie was going to be made, you know, before. And, and then, when it came, when the opportunity arose to audition for it, it, it all happened, kind of, quite fast. The movie was gonna be shot quite fast, you know, the audition was happening like a few days after I heard about it. It was like, read the script, you know, you're auditioning now. And I was, I mean, I was just overjoyed. And I feel like oftentimes with, like, auditions, it's like I'm very like chill about that kind of thing because I feel like I just have always like, you know, led with this feeling that like my mom always said to me like, you know, roles go to the people who are meant to play them. And I totally believe that in my heart. And so I feel like when it comes to auditions,

• 8:34Speaker 01

I've always had kind of like a, you know, of course, you always do your best and hope that, you know, that you get the job or whatever. But, you know, I feel like I'm always just kind of like, I'm gonna go in, I'm gonna do my thing. If I get it, then great. And if I don't, then it just like wasn't meant for me. But when I heard about this one, I was definitely like, I really want.

• 8:50Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, but this time, I really want.

• 8:52Speaker 01

I really, really want this one. Just because like I said, I've always been a fan of Rob's work. I think he's so incredible. And I love this story. I've always loved the Nosferatu, like Dracula story. And my role is like more central and fleshed out than it's ever been in Nosferatu's of the past. And so I was just like, this, you know, is an opportunity like no other. I am gonna do the best damn audition I've ever done in my life. And I don't know if I did, but I, but I did get the job. So that was very, that was very cool. It was a Zoom audition, too.

• 9:26Josh Horowitz?

Wait, is the war true? Did you make your poor director cry?

• 9:29Speaker 01

I mean, I like can't say that myself. I'm gonna leave that to Rob. He has, he did say that.

• 9:34Josh Horowitz?

  Over Zoom, you're saying?

• 9:35Speaker 01

It was over Zoom, yeah. It was over Zoom, yeah. I mean, I'm, I'm gonna leave, you know, Rob to talk about his reaction because I just, I just can't. But, um, but yeah, it was over Zoom. And so I feel like, and also it's like auditions, you're just kind of like throwing stuff at the wall and just hoping that it sticks or not. And so I feel like my intention in the audition was just to show him like, I am willing to go there emotionally. I'm willing to go there physically and like I will do whatever it takes to get this job. Um, and so, and so, yeah, I prepped like the accent is why I did like a session with like a. Our dialect coach before the audition, because I was like, I hope the accent isn't like ridiculous.

• 10:15Josh Horowitz?

Right, and this all happened in the span of a few days or so.

• 10:17Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, yeah, and then Rob, I had had like a Zoom, like just kind of like meeting.

• 10:21Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 10:22Speaker 01

Um, with Rob, like the, or a couple of days before I did the audition. And so we had like had a chat and it went really well, I think, and um, and then I was like, okay, now I have to just like not ruin it in the audition. And uh, and so the night of the, like I did the audition like in the morning and then I got a text from Rob. Um, that night when I was like about to go to bed, being like, you, you got it. And I couldn't believe it. I was like, I felt like I was like, you know, just already dreaming or something. I was like, that's insane. I was so excited.

• 10:54Josh Horowitz?

Pretty much the best text phone call.

• 10:56Speaker 01

  Best text, yeah.

• 10:57Josh Horowitz?

  Career wise of your career.

• 10:57Speaker 01

Oh my god, yeah, I couldn't, I couldn't believe it. I was so excited.

• 11:00Josh Horowitz?

So, okay, vampires, Nosferatu, the Dracula myth, the whole thing, like it's part of our DNA. We all grew up with it. We all, and I certainly uh, was obsessed with it and still am. I'm a little bit older than you, so like my entry point, Bram Stoker's Dracula, the Coppola movie. I was obsessed. I knew every line of that movie.

• 11:18Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 11:18Josh Horowitz?

Uh, there are some parallels here, which are fun to kind of like see. Um, what for you, like I'm doing the math and I'm like, did Lily Rose see a Dracula movie or Twilight first? What was her vampire access point?

• 11:29Speaker 01

Well, actually, my, I was, I had like a very like vintage uh, Dracula like origin story. My brother and I were obsessed with Abbott and Costello as kids.

• 11:39Josh Horowitz?

  Meet Frankenstein, that one.

• 11:40Speaker 01

Yeah, and, and, and meet Dracula.

• 11:42Josh Horowitz?

Oh, was there the one that?

• 11:43Speaker 01

There was a Dracula one, yeah, and so we loved that one. And my brother specifically was obsessed with Dracula. And he used to like dress up like Dracula when he was like three or four.

• 11:52Josh Horowitz?

  Totally normal.

• 11:53Speaker 01

Very cute, totally normal. Um, and he would like say like lines from the movie, like there's like a line where he's like, I never drink wine. Like, yeah, my brother used to say that as like a little kid all the time. And um, and so, yeah, I loved that one. I love, you know, the Bela Lugosi Dracula, the Christopher Lee Dracula.

• 12:11Josh Horowitz?

  Yep.

• 12:11Speaker 01

We always loved Dracula Dead and Loving It as well, which is like, yeah, more of like a comedic take on the story, but we loved that one.

• 12:18Josh Horowitz?

  Yep.

• 12:19Speaker 01

Um, so yeah, so also when I heard about this, when I got the opportunity to audition, I was like, oh my god, like my brother's gonna freak if I get this part.

• 12:26Josh Horowitz?

Wait, I also read somewhere, um, Halloween's, you've done a few dead versions of characters.

• 12:31Speaker 01

  I have, yeah. Good research.

• 12:33Josh Horowitz?

You know. So it's in the DNA. You've been prepping this for this, whether knowingly or not, over years.

• 12:39Speaker 01

Yeah, I've been into the, I've been into the, yeah, the Gothic side of things. Well, I was like a princess a lot when I was a kid, when I was like little. And then when I got a little older, a little more mature, I did like a dead princess. I did like a, I was a dead angel one year.

• 12:53Josh Horowitz?

  Sure.

• 12:53Speaker 01

I was, what else? I think I did like a dead, like, super girl? Was it, am I, I'm, I'm, am I like remembering this right? I did like a dead lots of things.

• 13:03Josh Horowitz?

  Wow, that's her thing, yeah.

• 13:04Speaker 01

Perhaps I just liked the glam of it all, the makeup or something.

• 13:09Josh Horowitz?

Not a surprise, you ended up where you were, so.

• 13:11Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 13:17Josh Horowitz?

If I had a dollar for everybody in my life who's benefited from therapy, I would be a very, very rich man. Therapy has certainly helped me, especially when I was a confused teenager, and thankfully, that's not a shameful thing to say anymore, right? It's okay to seek help and need help and talk about it. We're all doing our best. We're just trying to get by, right, guys? Unfortunately, the reality is that getting help is still harder than it should be. That's why I'm thrilled always to have Rula as a sponsor of Happy Say Confuse, because it's very obvious to me that online therapy should be both accessible and affordable for everybody. So let's make it easy for anybody who wants help to get help. That's where Rula comes in. Here's the thing, a lot of online therapy platforms don't actually talk about. Most don't take insurance.

• 14:02Josh Horowitz?

That means you're either paying out of pocket or signing up for some very expensive monthly subscription. Rula does it all differently. They work with over 120 insurance plans, so the average copay, I can't get over this, it's just 15 bucks a session. So basically two of your lattes, okay? A pretty good deal if you ask me. That means you can get real therapy from a licensed professional without breaking the bank. And Rula doesn't just set you up and leave you alone. They give you that therapist, and then they're along the way, the whole journey with you to make sure your care is working for you and you're actually making progress, hitting your goals. This can all happen right away, guys. With Rula, appointments are often available as soon as tomorrow. There are no wait lists, there's no frustrating back and forth. They make it easy. Thousands of people are already using Rula to get affordable,

• 14:48Josh Horowitz?

high-quality therapy that's actually covered by insurance. Visit rula.com/happy to get started. That's rula, R-U-L-A, dot com slash happy. You deserve mental health care that works with you, not against your budget. You guys know the best stuff in your closet is the stuff that you actually wear, right? The things that you just keep coming back to, whether you're going to work, you're going out, you're just hanging around. Well, with the holidays coming up, Quince makes it really easy to find great gifts for everyone on your list. This year, I'm doing a lot of my holiday shopping at Quince. And yes, that includes a few things for myself. That's okay, right? One of the things I love about Quince is that you're getting really high-quality stuff without spending a fortune. Their cashmere sweaters start at just 60 bucks, and they've got everything from great down jackets and wool coats,

• 15:32Josh Horowitz?

to cashmere scarves and accessories. Basically, everything you need to stay warm and look good this winter. And they're using really premium materials at Quince. We're talking 100% Mongolian cashmere, Italian leather, even 14-karat gold. These are the kinds of things that make great gifts, but also that make people actually use them, right? And wear long after the holidays. And here's the best part. Quince prices everything 50 to 80% less than similar brands. How do they do it? Well, they work directly with ethical factories, and they cut out the middlemen. So you're getting that luxury quality without paying those crazy luxury prices. I love how functional and fashionable all my Quince stuff is. I've got a cashmere hoodie that is honestly invaluable and actually makes me look like I know what I'm talking about when it comes to fashion.

• 16:17Josh Horowitz?

And that is a miracle. So give the gift of quality this holiday season. Download the Quince app for app-exclusive offers, or go to quince.com. Get free shipping on your order and 365-day returns. It's now available in Canada and the UK, too. And when Quince asks where you've heard about them, you know what to do. Let them know it was happy, sad, confused. That's the best way to support our show.

• 16:45Josh Horowitz?

I want to talk about the ensemble here because you're in great company.

• 16:49Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 16:49Josh Horowitz?

I mean, so Bill Skarsgård, you know, Nick Holt, Willem Dafoe, Emma Corrin.

• 16:55Speaker 01

  Insane.

• 16:56Josh Horowitz?

Insane. A lot of them are your contemporaries. Willem's obviously a different generation. But like, having a bunch of folks that are your contemporaries, was that helpful for you? You're at a remote location, you're at an intense experience.

• 17:08Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 17:08Josh Horowitz?

Rob really creates atmosphere like nobody else.

• 17:11Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 17:11Josh Horowitz?

Talk to me a little bit about what it was like to work with that company of actors.

• 17:14Speaker 01

Oh, I mean, all of the, like, you say these names and I'm just like, every single one of them is so incredible and so talented and so singular. Like, I feel like every single person brings their own charm and twist and sensibility, you know, to their role in a way that is so uniquely theirs. And I feel like it really makes the movie what it is. And, you know, like I was saying earlier, like, roles really, like, you know, parts are played by the people who were meant to play them. And I just feel like everybody is so perfectly cast. Everybody is so human and heartbreaking and funny even at times and just like incredible.

• 17:55Speaker 01

And I felt so blessed to be surrounded by these incredible actors because I think, you know, especially like you said, when you are going through like an intense shooting experience, to be able to lean on these people who not only are so talented but are so kind and so present and so there with you in the scenes. It's just like, it's, you know, it's a huge gift.

• 18:18Josh Horowitz?

I don't know if you still keep a diary. What did the diary look like during this production?

• 18:22Speaker 01

It's probably really dark. I don't even know. I feel like there was like, you know, I mean, it was a beautiful experience. It was like an unforgettable experience. I will cherish it forever. But it was intense. I mean, you know, and there's a real like... Darkness and like a heaviness to the story and to the role. And I feel like I carried that with me while we were shooting, for sure. Like I, you know, not in a way that was like detrimental to my sanity, but in a way that like, that was present and palpable. And when we finished shooting, I was definitely like, like I'm, something has been released from my, my heart or something. Um, so I haven't even gone back to look at those dire entries, but they're probably real, they're probably real dark. And I also think, you know, everything that you're,

• 19:06Speaker 01

everything is like available circumstance, like an actory term. But like, you know, anything that you're feeling can lend itself to what your character is feeling. So I feel like I tried to just like marry the two as much as I could.

• 19:17Josh Horowitz?

And you also, as evidenced by like your attitude when the audition first came around, like you knew this was like a moment.

• 19:23Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 19:23Josh Horowitz?

You're, you know, actors don't get shots like this. Not like, you know, you've been building to a moment like this.

• 19:29Speaker 01

Thanks. But it's, I mean, yeah, I, I just feel like there's, there was no way to go about this other than just like really diving in the deep end. And I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. Like that's what I'm, I like that. Like I'm, I like the challenge and I like to be like submerged in a world. And this is like, you can't ask for more, uh, more immersive a world to kind of dive into.

• 19:49Josh Horowitz?

Well, okay, there's nothing half-assed about what you did on the screen. Because this, this, this, you go to some real extremes in the film. I feel like you and Wenda Blair can have like a real conversation now.

• 19:58Speaker 01

Thank you. That's a high phrase. I love that. Thanks.

• 20:01Josh Horowitz?

But talk to me a little bit about, like, how, how does that feel on set? You're doing these kind of like really extreme, you know, eyes going through the back of your head, like gyrations, et cetera.

• 20:09Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 20:10Josh Horowitz?

Um, can you silence the part of your brain that's like, I look like a crazy person? I guess you have to. That's the job of the actor.

• 20:16Speaker 01

You kind of have to. You really have to like let it all go. And one of the main inspirations for all those physical movements is, is a, is a Japanese, um, art form called buto, which

• 20:30Speaker 01

A lot of the idea behind it is kind of like almost letting your consciousness kind of float away from your body and becoming like an empty vessel for something else to take over you.

• 20:41Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 20:41Speaker 01

And that is like an idea that I feel like I tried to channel a lot for several reasons. One of them being so that I could like be possessed by the demon kind of thing and like, you know, carry out the scenes, but also because you have to silence that voice in your head. No matter what you're doing, like even if you're just doing a normal like talking scene. Acting is like play. It's like playing pretend, you know, you're like having to be super convincing in pretend and so you have to silence that. It's like you almost have to go back to like a childlike imagination of like when you're kids and you're playing and you're playing with your dolls or whatever you play with as a kid and you and everything feels so real. And then when you grow up, you you gain this like consciousness that's like constantly telling yourself that like

• 21:25Speaker 01

everything is like silly and not real and ridiculous and whatever. And so you have to like silence that no matter what the scene is, but especially when you're doing, you know, kind of some crazy shit.

• 21:35Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 21:35Speaker 01

Uh, you have to like, you know, just let it all go and and also like feel the trust in your collaborators. Like I feel like I really had that with Rob. Not because I had worked with him before because I hadn't. It was my first time working with him, but I I love his work so much and so I feel like I had that trust with him because I knew that no matter where he was leading me, it was gonna be a great place to be. And so I almost had to just like, yeah, completely kind of float away and not be there and not think that I could look silly even if I did at times because it's like, you know, it's all part of the process.

• 22:07Josh Horowitz?

And he's gonna take care of you in the edit.

• 22:08Speaker 01

Yeah. And also he's so precise, like he's so specific that like he's not gonna let you leave until that scene is perfect. And so there's there's comfort in that.

• 22:18Josh Horowitz?

And you're, again, we talked about the company of actors, like when you're playing a scene with Bill.

• 22:21Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 22:21Josh Horowitz?

Oh my god. I mean, this guy's career I'm obsessed with.

• 22:23Speaker 01

  Yeah, he's incredible.

• 22:25Josh Horowitz?

He's incredible and I'm just love, like how he is just so willing, like obviously can be a leading man, but he's like obsessed with being like the weirdest, craziest characters.

• 22:34Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 22:34Josh Horowitz?

Like, uh, going for the most fucked up shit. I love it.

• 22:36Speaker 01

Yeah. No, he's he's a fa- he's his choices are fascinating.

• 22:40Josh Horowitz?

  Fascinating.

• 22:40Speaker 01

  He's an incredible actor.

• 22:41Josh Horowitz?

So, and I know you've talked about this a lot, but like he's in this full crazy makeup. He's doing the voice, the whole thing.

• 22:49Speaker 01

  It's insane.

• 22:50Josh Horowitz?

And again, like, this is, this is play, but that, I mean, you're on these sets with this guy that's fully committed.

• 22:56Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 22:57Josh Horowitz?

So you can't be the odd woman out.

• 22:58Speaker 01

Absolutely not. No, and I think, you know, you can only be better for how wonderful your scene partner is, and that, you know, definitely rang true in my scenes with Bill, in my scenes with everyone, because everyone is so incredible, like you were saying. But the level of commitment that Bill had to dive into to create this character was like astounding. And it was clear from the very first rehearsal, I mean, the very first rehearsal that I did with him, he was just like not having, you know, he didn't have any of the prosthetics or any of the...

• 23:28Josh Horowitz?

And it was still all those?

• 23:29Speaker 01

It was just, he was, he was just normal. He was just wearing like kind of sweats and like a normal outfit, and he just looked like, you know, the regular human being that he is. And yet he had this voice that was insane. And I couldn't, it's almost like I couldn't compute like the kind of regular person that I was looking at with this like insanely transportative voice. And it was so, it was so incredible. He's such an incredible actor. And, and, and he makes it so easy to be terrified of him. And, and, you know, for, it's like all pretend, but from, from, for those few moments between like action and cut, it's all real. And he is there giving it a hundred and ten percent. And so you

• 24:12Speaker 01

have no choice but to do the same. And so I feel like, you know, it's, it's, uh, yeah, it's a beautiful thing.

• 24:16Josh Horowitz?

Is his Nosferatu an attractive being? This is the most important question of the entire conversation. Do we consider that vessel that, what Rob and him and the makeup team have created?

• 24:27Speaker 01

Yeah. I mean, I think it's interesting because Rob was talking about this in a, in a, an interview the other day. He was saying how the first kind of vampire tales that were written, were written by people who really believed that vampires existed.

• 24:40Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 24:40Speaker 01

And so they, they were anything but kind of like, um, romanticized, like sexualized beings in the way that we've come to know vampires through just like pop culture and stuff.

• 24:52Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 24:52Speaker 01

Um, and so I think that Rob really wanted to go back to that idea of a vampire that is just like blood curdling in every way.

• 24:59Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 25:00Speaker 01

And yet, it was clear in the script and clear then in my conversations with Rob that he really wanted my scenes with Bill to be infused with like a real sensuality and a real desire between these two characters, which is, you know, which is freaky and crazy. And yet, it's, I think he symbolizes like a lot of the darkness that she sits with. He's like the physical manifestation of that darkness and this pull that she can't explain and that she can't wrap her head around, but that she feels so strongly.

• 27:10Josh Horowitz?

Indulge me for a second, going all the way back.

• 27:12Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 27:13Josh Horowitz?

  Growing up.

• 27:14Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 27:15Josh Horowitz?

Were you on sets? Like, were you in this environment?

• 27:18Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 27:19Josh Horowitz?

Does it make it less weird that the fact that, obviously, it's part of the family?

• 27:22Speaker 01

Yeah, I mean, I think it just means that I have an awareness of the environment.

• 27:27Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 27:28Speaker 01

You know, I definitely grew up on sets, which was always fascinating to me. Specifically, like, I remember being a kid, like, being on sets. How quiet you have to be when the cameras are rolling and when they say "action", like, you know, you obviously have to be very quiet so that the scene can take place. And I remember being fascinated with the idea of, like, being the person that got to speak when everybody else had to be really quiet. For some reason, that was...

• 27:55Josh Horowitz?

I want to be that person. They seem really important.

• 27:56Speaker 01

Yeah, I was like, "That's so cool. You get to, like, speak amongst this, like, deafening silence."

• 28:00Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 28:01Speaker 01

I always thought that was really cool. And I'm obsessed with, like, the idea of, like, world-building. You know, building these worlds that are transported so far away from our own and yet feel so rooted in truth. I always thought that was so cool. And so, you know, this has always been my dream, like, in a real way. And like, you know, for example, like, this movie, like, I had never shot in, like, practical sets, like, outdoor sets, like, in the way that, you know, like, the town of Visberg, like, they built it all on the backlot. And it was so incredible. I remember walking onto it for the first time and I was like, "Oh", like, this is... It was reminiscent of, in a way, the sets that I had been on as a kid.

• 28:44Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 28:45Speaker 01

And I had never shot on one before. And I remember thinking, like, "This is so cool. I can't believe that I get to, like, you know, work in this environment that is so, like, you know, alive and just so rich with life." It was, yeah, incredible.

• 28:59Josh Horowitz?

So, friends and family that knew you growing up, are they surprised at all? Like, were you an extrovert as a kid?

• 29:04Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure, yeah. I mean, weirdly, so, like, yes and no. I feel like, I'm a Gemini, so I feel like there's, like, a lot of sides to me. I was really shy as a kid. Like, I remember, like, I also, like, I only started school in kindergarten. Like, I didn't go to preschool because I was really shy. Like, I started kindergarten and then I was, like, kind of, just, I was just super, super shy. So, I didn't continue. And I think my mom was, like, not wanting to, like, put me through that. So, I started in kindergarten. And I remember like touring my kindergarten class, like hiding behind my mom's like leg. I was like very, very shy as a kid. And then I think I I kind of came out of my shell a little bit through like making friends and stuff like that.

• 29:49Speaker 01

And then after that, I was always like quite performative. Um, I love to like put on a show and you know, sing and dance and kind of, um. Yeah, that's always been a part of my personality, I guess, but also the other side of that as well, I guess.

• 30:03Josh Horowitz?

Did you, like, looking back, is there a specific time where you feel like you fully committed? Like, I'm really gonna make a go of this. Like, I mean, I I've thought about it. I've maybe mentioned it to friends or family, but like, I'm gonna commit, I'm gonna fully go all in.

• 30:17Speaker 01

I mean, I feel like it kind of happened by accident in a way. I always like wanted it. And my parents just wanted me to wait until I was like grown up to do it. They wanted me to like have a childhood and stuff, which I feel like I had. It's just that I started working earlier than I thought that I would, I guess, which really started with with, um.

• 30:32Josh Horowitz?

  Because of the Tusk cameo.

• 30:33Speaker 01

With Tusk, yeah, I did like a cameo in Tusk with Harley, who's who's who's, you know, my childhood, my best friend since I was five. And, um, and it was in doing that, which was just like a fun kind of silly thing, that I was like, I I really feel like this is where I wanna be. And and then Kevin, you know, loved those characters and the hero yoga hosers and I, I I mean, I was so excited. I was like, wow, I I feel like my like dream is coming true right now. And I and I just knew after we shot that, that I was like, I don't wanna be anywhere else. Like, this is what I wanna do. And I feel like from that moment on, I was kind of like, I I wanna dive in. But then it's like, I was a kid, so I feel like now that I'm an adult, I think about the approach that I had to acting when I was like fifteen, sixteen years old.

• 31:18Speaker 01

And I'm like, I didn't know what I was doing, but you know, you always, you always learn. It's part of the journey.

• 31:22Josh Horowitz?

Did you feel like on those early auditions, expectations based on your parentage? Like, did you feel that, like, shadow in the room?

• 31:29Speaker 01

Yeah, of course. I mean, I think, you know, it's this, this, uh, this industry like definitely doesn't let you forget it. You know, in this this world, but that's okay. I mean, I, you know, it's it's just a, it's just the name of the game. It's just a, it's just a part of it and, you know. I'm a hard worker, I always have been, and it's that hard work, you know, it's being in the trenches kind of that I'm interested in, and so I don't mind, like, working harder if that's, if, you know, if that's what people, I guess, want from me or something, to like, prove myself, I'm, you know, it's that hard work that I'm interested in, and so that's never been a concern for me, I guess.

• 32:09Josh Horowitz?

It's funny, I was gonna say, it's funny, because I've talked to a lot of folks that have, like, you know, actors in the business, in their family, and like, some of the most well-adjusted folks, like, John David Washington, Jack Quaid, like, these folks that, like, you would think, how can they possibly be as grounded? But I feel like it's like, almost, almost an overcompensation, like, you know what people are thinking, and it's like, I'm gonna, yeah, I'll work even harder.

• 32:30Speaker 01

Yeah, I mean, I just like, I love what I do, like, so much, I feel like this is the only thing that I know how to do in the world, and so I feel like I, I just like, I have to do this, and if that means, like, working ten times harder, you know, for people to like,

• 32:49Josh Horowitz?

Get past their preconceived notions, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 32:51Speaker 01

Get past that, then that's okay, because that's, that's the work that I'm interested in, and at the end of the day, like, I'm not, you know, I'm not ashamed, like, my parents are such talented performers, and I'm, and I'm, I'm blessed to be their daughter, and to have watched them go about their careers, and it's, it's given me so much inspiration, and so, you know, yeah, I'm, I'm happy to, I'm happy to keep going like that.

• 33:11Josh Horowitz?

I want to briefly talk about some, a couple of the projects, is The King a turning point? Because on that one, you get to work with a very talented filmmaker, some great actors.

• 33:19Speaker 01

Yeah, absolutely, I mean, I think that was one that was, that was, I was really excited to get that part, I think also, like, I love period pieces, I love, you know, also getting to play like, a French, you know, princess, I was very excited about that. I honestly feel like every role that I've been lucky enough to play has felt like a turning point, in a way. Not that they all can be, but I feel like every, every role has, has taught me so much and, you know, things take a long time. Like you shoot something, it comes out so much later, all these things. So I feel like every role that I've gotten to play has caught me at a different point in my life, where I feel like I've been going through a certain change in that moment. And so, in a way, they all feel like turning points.

• 34:00Josh Horowitz?

Um, I referenced in the intro, uh, The Idol, which I know is something you had like so much passion for.

• 34:05Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 34:05Josh Horowitz?

And like, there was so much mystique about like, how the production, and how many episodes, and what's gonna happen, the whole thing. And then, you know, you have your experience and then

• 34:13Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 34:14Josh Horowitz?

the press has their own interpretation of it.

• 34:16Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 34:16Josh Horowitz?

Did you, like, did that feel surreal, kind of like, to go through it, this passion project for everybody involved? And then to have this other narrative kind of going on at the same time?

• 34:26Speaker 01

I mean, yes and no. Like, I think the thing that sucked about that was to have people kind of like talking shit about Sam, who is a great friend of mine and somebody that I consider like family. Like, I'm, I'm super close with him and Ashley, his wife, who, who's a producer on the show.

• 34:42Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 34:43Speaker 01

And they are such wonderful people, like so incredible, so kind, and like, really like, kind of took me under their wing in, in a way. And so, I think the, the thing that, the only thing that I really like was upsetting about that whole time period was people talking negatively about him because the things that they said about him particularly as a filmmaker were, just couldn't be further from the truth. And from at least my experience working with him. So that sucks. You just never wanna hear people like talking shit about your friend. Um,

• 35:12Josh Horowitz?

And you love that character, I know.

• 35:14Speaker 01

I love that character. And I, and I love that show. And I, and I, you know, like I was saying earlier, like, people are always gonna, you know, make their own opinions of things. And so, you just have to be steadfast in your conviction of like, I know why I'm doing this. And I know why I did that. And it was, that really felt like a turning point. Like, that was a time period in my life where I feel like I learned so much. I was pushed so far out of my comfort zone in the most beautiful way. And it gave me so much growth that I will always look back on that as like one of the most special times of my life. And I, and in a way, it's like, it was surreal and not because we always knew it was gonna be controversial. And so,

• 35:55Josh Horowitz?

  You weren't making, yeah.

• 35:56Speaker 01

  No.

• 35:56Josh Horowitz?

  Network TV.

• 35:57Speaker 01

No, you gotta be expecting that in a way. And that's okay. Like, I'm, I'm interested in that kind of work. I'm down for that. And I think we were also like, Pushing like society's buttons, I think intentionally, a little bit in a way. And of course, it was received in the way that it was. But it's okay. I mean, every time, like, people do come up to me sometimes and say like, "I loved the idol." And I'm always like, "I love that. It makes me so happy." Um, and yeah, I think it's, it's beautiful and I, I wouldn't have changed anything about it.

• 36:25Josh Horowitz?

Uh, current reality film obsessions this year. As we, Kareem, towards the end of 2024, you're still a reality fan? What's top of the list?

• 36:32Speaker 01

Oh my God, I am such a reality fan. Do you, do, have we talked about that before?

• 36:36Josh Horowitz?

No, but, you know, I've read off.

• 36:37Speaker 01

You are so good. Oh my God, I've been watching so much Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.

• 36:41Josh Horowitz?

  That's the go-to?

• 36:42Speaker 01

So incredible. That's been, that's been my go-to. It's literally an incredible show. Um, so good. What else? Oh my God, I was big on Love Island this summer.

• 36:51Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 36:51Speaker 01

I was big on that. That was, that was a journey. I didn't, when I started the show, I didn't realize that there's an episode every day. So I didn't, I had never watched Love Island before.

• 37:00Josh Horowitz?

  But you dove in.

• 37:01Speaker 01

  I didn't, I dove in.

• 37:02Josh Horowitz?

Like the acting, when she dives in, guys.

• 37:04Speaker 01

She dives in. I mean, I just, I didn't know how much of a commitment I was making for that show. But then once I was in, it's like, you're in.

• 37:10Josh Horowitz?

  And well worth it.

• 37:11Speaker 01

And, and well worth it. Um, and then what else have I been watching? I love, I mean, I also just like, I, I have like a huge list of movies that I'll just like, whenever I don't know what to watch, I'll like flip through that and like, watch something. The last thing that I watched that I loved was Shadow of Vampire.

• 37:24Josh Horowitz?

  Oh, great. Well, yeah.

• 37:25Speaker 01

Starring Willem Dafoe. I, I had never heard of it. I learned about it like during a Q and A. And I didn't know that he had played Max Shrek.

• 37:31Josh Horowitz?

During the Q and A, you're like, "Oh, that sounds interesting."

• 37:33Speaker 01

No, literally, we were talking about it. I was like, "Wait, I need to watch this movie." And I watched it and I loved it. It's also, it reminded me in a way of, um, uh, Dracula Dead and Loving It, you know, kind of a comedic take on the Nosferatu myth. And Willem is one of my favorite actors in the world. So I, I loved that one.

• 37:49Josh Horowitz?

I hope a lot of people watch Nosferatu and then go watch Dracula Dead and Loving It.

• 37:52Speaker 01

  I hope so too. It's a good, it's a, it's a, it's a cool little, cool little journey to go on.

• 37:56Josh Horowitz?

Okay, I'm gonna wrap with a happy second, few profoundly random questions for you.

• 37:59Speaker 01

  Go for it, yes.

• 38:00Josh Horowitz?

  Dogs or cats?

• 38:02Speaker 01

Cats. Sorry. I have, I have a cat and he-

• 38:05Josh Horowitz?

  Why do you say sorry?

• 38:06Speaker 01

Because I feel like everybody like, likes dogs better. But I'm sorry, I'm here to say that cats are very special little creatures. And you know what? And they are excited when you come home. So, yeah.

• 38:17Josh Horowitz?

Calm down, dog freaks out there.

• 38:19Speaker 01

Yeah, exactly. I mean, I love dogs too. Like, they're so cute, but I'm just here to say, my, my little guy Pumpkin is gonna be ecstatic when I go home tonight, so.

• 38:28Josh Horowitz?

  Uh, do you collect anything?

• 38:29Speaker 01

  Do I collect anything? Um...

• 38:33Speaker 01

I'm trying to think, do I collect anything? Not really, but I love like kitchen, like I like like antique plates

• 38:42Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 38:43Speaker 01

and serving dishes and like ashtrays, like I like like antique glassware, I guess.

• 38:48Josh Horowitz?

That's a first on the podcast, antique glassware for the win, okay.

• 38:51Speaker 01

I haven't really thought about the fact that that's something I collect, but it is honestly something I collect, antique glassware.

• 38:56Josh Horowitz?

  Uh wallpaper on your phone?

• 38:57Speaker 01

Wallpaper on my phone is a picture of my boyfriend when uh she was a little baby.

• 39:03Josh Horowitz?

  Very sweet.

• 39:03Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 39:04Josh Horowitz?

Um last actor you were mistaken for?

• 39:06Speaker 01

Last actor I was mistaken for, um.

• 39:10Josh Horowitz?

  Ever happen?

• 39:11Speaker 01

I don't think that's ever happened, I feel like when I was younger, people used to say I looked like Anna Sophia Roth.

• 39:16Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 39:17Speaker 01

Um which I kind of see.

• 39:19Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 39:19Speaker 01

And I love her, she's a great actress, yeah.

• 39:21Josh Horowitz?

Worst noted director has ever given you?

• 39:23Speaker 01

Worst noted director is uh, I think one that's tough for me is like blah blah blah blah and then you cry.

• 39:31Josh Horowitz?

  Oh gosh, that's easy, yeah.

• 39:32Speaker 01

Yeah, cuz I feel like it's like, and you can do that, but I just feel like it's, you know, emotion is a finicky thing, you want it to come up organically. Of obviously, we're in the business of manipulating emotion, that's like the whole job.

• 39:44Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 39:45Speaker 01

But I feel like whenever I've been asked to make a tear come out, um kind of in a very technical way, it's fine, I understand the note, but in the back of my head, I'm kind of like, okay, well, that's that's really hard, but it's okay.

• 39:57Josh Horowitz?

I was gonna ask you to end this interview with a tear, but I guess.

• 40:01Speaker 01

  Maybe next time.

• 40:02Josh Horowitz?

  Last.

• 40:02Speaker 01

  Yeah, go ahead.

• 40:04Josh Horowitz?

Happy second fuse, an actor that always makes you happy?

• 40:06Speaker 01

An actor that always makes me happy, my god.

• 40:11Josh Horowitz?

You see them on screen, you're in a good mood.

• 40:14Speaker 01

Honestly, friend, like Friends, any of the actors in Friends, Friends is like my go-to, like Friends is my lullaby.

• 40:20Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 40:20Speaker 01

So yeah, probably David Schwimmer, honestly, or no, Steve Carell, Steve Carell.

• 40:25Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 40:25Speaker 01

Like The Office, like Steve Carell, yeah.

• 40:27Josh Horowitz?

  Movie that makes you sad?

• 40:29Speaker 01

Movie that makes me sad, oh my god, so many, what was this movie, what did I watch recently that just like broke my heart? God, I cannot think of it.

• 40:41Josh Horowitz?

  It's okay. You're a junket brain. It's hard to.

• 40:43Speaker 01

My brain is, yeah, fried, but I cannot remember. I'm trying to think. It's annoying me though because there is a movie that I watched recently that like shattered me. I can't remember, but I cry really easily at movies. So honestly, anything that has like any sort of a tear jerky vibe, like I'm crying for sure.

• 41:01Josh Horowitz?

And food that makes you confused?

• 41:02Speaker 01

Food that makes me confused. I hate cheese. I really hate it. In a way that like, I know, I know, I really, really do.

• 41:11Josh Horowitz?

We had a good thing going and now it's over.

• 41:13Speaker 01

  I know, I know.

• 41:13Josh Horowitz?

  Is it a lactose intolerance?

• 41:15Speaker 01

No, it's not. And also like I'm French, like I should, I should like it.

• 41:19Josh Horowitz?

  What a waste.

• 41:19Speaker 01

I hate it. But like to the point where I'm like, if my friends bring it to my house, I'm like, it has to be gone. Once the night is over, like you have to take it home. I don't want it in my fridge. Like I know, it's like a phobia. I really hate it. I really, really, and I don't, I don't get why people like it. I really don't get it.

• 41:34Josh Horowitz?

We'll talk later about the cheese thing.

• 41:35Speaker 01

  Yeah, we'll.

• 41:36Josh Horowitz?

  Congratulations on the movie.

• 41:37Speaker 01

  Thank you.

• 41:38Josh Horowitz?

I'm glad it falls into the podcast finally.

And I'm Melissa and we're the hosts of Moms and Mysteries, the true crime podcast with over 55 million downloads. We're two Florida moms who are obsessed with mysteries. Each week we do deep dives into fascinating true crime stories. We bring you the facts, but with warmth and width you'd only get from two friends who have been hooked on mysteries since childhood.
