Hello, everyone. Welcome to another episode of Good Hang. Very excited to talk to my buddy today, Greta Lee. Greta is an incredible actress. You may have seen her film, Past Lives. You may have seen her in The Morning Show. She's been in Girls, and Broad City, and Russian Doll. And she's so talented and beautiful and wonderful. And we're going to talk about a lot of fun things. We're going to talk about being a waitress. We're going to talk about how to drown on camera. We're going to talk about all the fun we had making Russian Doll together. And she's also going to explain her new part in Toy Story 5, in which she plays the villain. And that villain is an iPad. But before we get into talking to Greta, we're going to speak to somebody who knows her, who wants to speak well behind her back,

• 1:50Amy Poehler?

and give me a question to ask her. And that is celebrity chef, Alison Roman. Alison Roman, an author, a podcaster, kind of a food expert, hostess with the mostest. And Alison is going to join us. I believe she has a cat that's also going to join as well. So let's hear from Alison and get a question. Hi, Alison.

• 2:58Amy Poehler?

  Hi.

• 2:59Speaker 02

  Oh, my God, Amy. Hi.

• 3:02Amy Poehler?

Hi. It's so nice to meet you.

• 3:05Speaker 02

I can't tell you how nice it is to meet you.

• 3:07Amy Poehler?

  Is this your personal kitchen?

• 3:09Speaker 02

It is, yeah. I live here. It's like, ah, this big guy is here. This is Leonard. He's just such a big guy.

• 3:18Amy Poehler?

  Leonard.

• 3:20Speaker 02

Yeah, he loves to be in the mix.

• 3:22Amy Poehler?

Well, first of all, we're going to talk about Greta today, the great Greta Lee.

• 3:24Speaker 02

  Yeah, of course.

• 3:26Amy Poehler?

But I do want to talk to you about First Bloom, which is your brick and mortar store that you open in the Catskills and you're opening perhaps other places.

• 3:36Speaker 02

Perhaps, yeah. I started a little grocery store in 2023. We opened, sort of like a... And I didn't, I didn't really have a full plan. I was like, I'm going to open a grocery store, and that was it. And then I did, and I was like, OK, well, now what? But it went really well, and I love doing it. And yeah, we're going to open one in Brooklyn later this year.

• 4:00Amy Poehler?

I listen to podcasts while I grocery shop or listen to music because I like the, I don't really want to, I don't want to chat.

• 4:06Speaker 02

No, I don't want to chat. Although I do, and part of, I mean, I guess it makes sense because I did open a grocery store. But you don't like the, like, the co-ops? I don't know. LA doesn't really have this.

• 4:16Amy Poehler?

This is very Brooklyn. This is very Brooklyn.

• 4:18Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 4:19Amy Poehler?

I don't fuck with the co-ops. It's so stressful to me.

• 4:22Speaker 02

  Who has the time?

• 4:23Amy Poehler?

Exactly. It's my worst nightmare to walk into a place and people are already disappointed about my participation.

• 4:30Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 4:31Amy Poehler?

Like, hey, nice to see you.

• 4:34Amy Poehler?

  It's been a while.

• 4:35Speaker 02

So that said, I did determine that like, I thought if there was a job that I would would do at a co-op, which doesn't exist, but like I would stand in the aisles and effectively like tell people what to do. Like if people were like, what do I do with like red lentils? I'd be like, oh, well, I here, here are some great things. And then I just stand there. I don't have to do anything else.

• 4:55Amy Poehler?

That's really smart. You'd just be like, you'd be like the cruise director, like, let's talk about ramps.

• 5:01Speaker 02

Yeah. What are you really gonna do with them? Let's be honest with ourselves. Are they gonna rot in the fridge? You're gonna throw them away? You are, you're gonna compost them. But like, the number of times I'm in a butcher shop and I hear like a person, most often a man, who doesn't know what they're doing and they ask the butcher and the butcher like gives them kind of vague advice. I sometimes pipe up and I'm like, oh, you don't wanna grill that. That's gonna be a nightmare. Or, you know, like, sometimes I actually like to sear it briefly, you know, like, and I'd say eight times out of 10, they are so uninterested in what I have to say. Like, they're like, thanks.

• 5:32Amy Poehler?

  Sure.

• 5:32Speaker 02

I'm just a lady in the butcher shop.

• 5:34Amy Poehler?

  They're like, thanks, lady.

• 5:36Speaker 02

Yeah. And I'm like, some people would kill for this.

• 5:39Amy Poehler?

You're like, babe, I'm this is, I'm a professional. Also, it's like, it's you're like a doctor on an airplane and they're like, is there a doctor on board? And it's like, ah, I guess I gotta, I guess I gotta go save a life.

• 5:51Speaker 02

Yeah, exactly. And imagine, imagine having a medical issue and the doctor comes over and the people are like, we're good. You know, that's sort of what it feels like to me. I'm like being robust with the butcher, but.

• 6:01Amy Poehler?

Okay, so speaking of Brooklyn, I feel like that is where maybe you met Greta?

• 6:06Speaker 02

It is where I met Greta, yeah.

• 6:07Amy Poehler?

Didn't you work together at a restaurant?

• 6:10Speaker 02

So we did, and I think like I was working at Milk Bar at the time, which was like, that we shared a kitchen with Samba, which is where Greta worked. And, but we were like in the basement. We were very separate. It was like Milk Bar people and Samba people did not necessarily co-mingle. And so I knew of her, I think I saw her like the hot person that worked at Samba.

• 6:30Amy Poehler?

Yeah, like the most beautiful person.

• 6:32Speaker 02

Exactly. You're like, who's this hot, cool person that's so well dressed and seems fun? Like, I can't be friends with them. I was talking to somebody about this the other day, like how hard it is to be well dressed now because of the. Homogenous culture and everybody sees everything and but she so manages to like carry through. I mean, her style is the envy of every person with the with, you know, awareness of the internet that has like seen all of her appearances over the last few years, but like she's always had it. She's always had individuality that like really comes through.

• 7:02Amy Poehler?

Let's talk well behind her back. What do you love about her?

• 7:05Speaker 02

Um, I love that she is one of the hardest working and also kindest people that I've ever met. And I also, and this isn't really like, you know, a virtue, but she is hilarious. She's so funny and so funny, so funny and like has a great sense of humor and is just like such a bright light in the world and no matter where she goes and like how she shows up, like just existing, she is as fabulous as you might think she is if you've never met her. And I have seen it with like with her kids and her family and her friends and with like a random server at a restaurant and with basically any human on the planet. She's just like exceedingly kind and generous, but

• 7:50Speaker 02

and like hospitable. She has like a real like hospitality vibe around her and I feel like she was always the person hosting. She was always the person inviting people over. It was like the more the merrier energy every time. Um, and that is such a rare personality trait, I think.

• 8:07Amy Poehler?

Yeah, I mean, you, you are a great example of this, but it does feel like host so much of hosting is the vibe you give off when you're hosting.

• 8:14Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 8:15Amy Poehler?

So I love hosting. However, I'll just say that I realized that at times I was a little bit of a stressy host.

• 8:23Speaker 02

Hmm. But you feel like you've outgrown that, like you, you've moved on into a different era.

• 8:27Amy Poehler?

I've worked on it. I've worked on it.

• 8:28Speaker 02

Well, you also, you realize that like no one has a good time when you're stressed out. Like everyone actually has a bad time.

• 8:34Amy Poehler?

I know, but like we all know these things, but you know, when you're, you're, when something comes out of your mouth and you're like, oh, fuck, I said that out loud, like.

• 8:42Speaker 02

Yeah, I I still do it. I'll be like, oh, it's fine. No, it's really fine. Like, it's not fine. Not fine at all.

• 8:48Amy Poehler?

Totally. Or like, um, I you can eat that, but um, we're not, not yet. You know, like, whatever stupid shit you say.

• 8:55Speaker 02

And then there's like the apology part where it's like, well, this was supposed to did it up, but I didn't have the end. It's like, I even have to check myself and because I'm so good at giving people advice to not do that. And then I do that. And I'm like, well, I'm a bad student of myself. Like, I have to like, practice what I preach here. But yeah, it's very hard. But I'm really happy to hear that you're on the other side of that, or at least on your journey.

• 9:17Amy Poehler?

I'm working on it with professionals, day and night.

• 9:19Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 9:19Amy Poehler?

  Day and night.

• 9:22Amy Poehler?

Okay, so we always start our episodes with a question for our guest. Do you have a question that you think Greta would like to answer, or I should ask her?

• 9:31Speaker 02

Yeah, absolutely. I was thinking about like, what people don't know about her, like, what people maybe don't ask her often. Or like, I wonder how much they get into like, that restaurant part of her. Because I have a belief that like, once you're a restaurant person, you're always a restaurant person, and it teaches you a lot. So I kind of want to know, like, how in this iteration of her life, in this career, does like, what from restaurant days has she held on to? Or like, how has working in restaurants made her a better actor? Or, or, you know, multi hyphenate, as it were?

• 10:01Amy Poehler?

Allison, I love that question. I also was a restaurant person and waiter and for many, many years in New York, and wanted to ask just that, because I do think it is incredible training for life.

• 10:11Speaker 02

Yeah, it's like, the work ethic is unparalleled. And I think that, like, she has so much of that. And maybe that was pre restaurants. But I also think if you have it, you're more inclined to work at a restaurant. So it all kind of ties in together.

• 10:21Amy Poehler?

And before we go, I'm gonna ask you for some free advice, like, people do to doctors and to chefs.

• 10:28Speaker 02

  I would love.

• 10:29Amy Poehler?

Which is, I feel like my artichokes.

• 10:35Amy Poehler?

There's, I have to take so much off.

• 10:38Speaker 02

I can't even tell you how niche this question already is specifically to suit my intro. I have a dried artichoke on my, in a vase right here. I did not, this is just on my counter. Like, I'm obsessed with artichokes.

• 10:51Amy Poehler?

Me too. I, I just got back from Italy, not to brag, and the artichokes there were next level.

• 10:58Speaker 02

  Divine.

• 10:59Amy Poehler?

Incredible. I love, I love how it looks. I'm just starting to work with them. And it is like, it's, I must, must be like what a gardener feels like when they have to just like crazy prune a rose bush. Like, it's like, I have to cut all of that away?

• 11:14Speaker 02

  You're like, I'm killing it.

• 11:15Amy Poehler?

  I'm killing it.

• 11:16Speaker 02

  There's nothing left.

• 11:16Amy Poehler?

Cut the top, cut the, now, cut the stem, get all the leaves, almost all of the leaves off. I guess my question, I'll make it, is how do you like to prepare your artichokes these days?

• 11:29Speaker 02

Well, forever and always. And, and let me also just say that I too have been to Italy, not to brag. Not recently, but it has happened. And the way that they do artichokes there is so like, they're almost treating them like a trash vegetable. Like, they're so prolific and like, the way that they grow and they, like, you see truckloads of them and they, they peel or, uh, like, pare back, like, the whole thing.

• 11:52Amy Poehler?

  It's just the heart.

• 11:54Speaker 02

  And they're like.

• 11:55Amy Poehler?

The rest is garbage. They throw it away.

• 11:57Speaker 02

Yeah. And I had never experienced that until I left the United States, obviously, because I grew up with basically a whole steamed artichoke, where you trim the stem, but the stem is super edible. I love eating the stem. The stem is basically like a, an extension of the heart. So it's just as tender, it's just as edible, it's sweet, it's delicious. But I just trim the, the leaves.

• 12:19Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 12:19Speaker 02

  Just right beyond the thorn.

• 12:21Amy Poehler?

Okay. And you cut the top?

• 12:23Speaker 02

And they leave the whole leaf. Yeah, I cut the top to expose the little rose in the center.

• 12:26Amy Poehler?

  Yep.

• 12:27Speaker 02

But that's honestly just for aesthetics. Like, that's not really serving a purpose. But I like to do it. And then I'll season it with salt, and then I'll steam them.

• 12:34Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 12:35Speaker 02

Like, you know, an inch or two of boiling water, artichokes, prop them up.

• 12:39Amy Poehler?

Do you take the fuzzy stuff out after they steam or before?

• 12:43Speaker 02

After they steam it's so much easier.

• 12:45Amy Poehler?

I think I learned that from you.

• 12:46Speaker 02

I do have a video online on how to eat an artichoke.

• 12:49Amy Poehler?

Okay, thank you for confirming my positive artichoke bias. I can't believe you have a dried one right in front of you.

• 12:56Speaker 02

I know, just trim, oh, also, I was gonna say, trim away like the tiniest leaves near the outside base of the snack.

• 13:01Amy Poehler?

Of course, I'm not an animal.

• 13:02Speaker 02

And then, once you steam it, if any of the like, leaves on the outer part are too tough, just discard them. But like, I don't trim it too far in advance.

• 13:10Amy Poehler?

Okay, I love to hear this. Okay, listeners, I hope it's getting you hungry for artichokes. Thank you so much, Allison. What a pleasure. And I'm sure Greta will be so happy that we talked, so thanks again.

• 13:21Speaker 02

I hope so. I love her so much. She's so wonderful. Bye.

• 13:24Amy Poehler?

  Bye, bye, Leonard.

Hi. Hi, bud. Oh, I just wanted to stare at you.

• 14:21Amy Poehler?

Oh, my God. Greta is here and she has her arms full of gifts.

• 14:27Speaker 03

Okay, so, yeah, I have some flowers. It's a collection of natives and non-natives. People really care about that here.

• 14:35Amy Poehler?

  From your garden?

• 14:36Speaker 03

  From my garden, yeah.

• 14:37Amy Poehler?

  Come on.

• 14:37Speaker 03

Look at that. We have some white sage and some, you know, lemon verbena and some...

• 14:43Amy Poehler?

And you wrapped it in a paper?

• 14:44Speaker 03

In a paper, in coloring paper.

• 14:46Amy Poehler?

People, this is a professional wrapping. Job with a rubber band and everything.

• 14:50Speaker 03

This is gorgeous. Thank you. We have a cut over here. There's more. I have the.

• 14:56Amy Poehler?

  Okay, what we also have.

• 14:58Speaker 03

It's like I'm worried you don't. You don't have a grocery store like you don't have access to.

• 15:02Amy Poehler?

This is unbelievable. This is from your garden?

• 15:05Speaker 03

Yeah, and I have these eggplants. Honestly, you're helping me. I can't eat this all.

• 15:11Amy Poehler?

Okay, I'm gonna say something. I'm very sorry.

• 15:14Speaker 03

  What?

• 15:14Amy Poehler?

  I don't like eggplant.

• 15:15Speaker 03

  I knew, I knew.

• 15:17Amy Poehler?

I'm so sorry. Get them out of here.

• 15:20Speaker 03

I knew that was gonna happen.

• 15:21Amy Poehler?

I love, I love how they look. I, they're so funny. I love it as an emoji. Incredible.

• 15:28Speaker 03

  I know.

• 15:29Amy Poehler?

  But as a.

• 15:30Speaker 03

  You don't like the taste?

• 15:31Amy Poehler?

  It's too slimy.

• 15:33Speaker 03

It's too slimy. No, but you can learn. You can, listen, this is, this is the thing. Now I, I know there are a lot of things you can do.

• 15:40Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 15:41Speaker 03

With eggplant. Okay, what about kale? You like kale, right?

• 15:44Amy Poehler?

Love kale. Obsessed with kale. This looks like dinosaur kale.

• 15:48Speaker 03

Yeah, dinosaur kale and curly kale.

• 15:51Amy Poehler?

  Oh my god.

• 15:52Speaker 03

Okay, and then there are avocados.

• 15:54Amy Poehler?

Incredible avocados for people listening. They're huge.

• 15:57Speaker 03

Yeah, they're huge. You can't eat them for like a year.

• 16:03Speaker 03

You like, you can't, like, don't even give it back.

• 16:07Speaker 03

Just leave it here. Just, it's like decoration. Don't even look at it. Don't touch it for like at least a year.

• 16:12Amy Poehler?

Okay, I'm pulling out a gigantic.

• 16:15Speaker 03

  That's an Oro Blanco.

• 16:17Amy Poehler?

  Excuse me?

• 16:18Speaker 03

  See, see, it's a, it's a cross between a pomelo and a white grapefruit. They're delicious.

• 16:23Amy Poehler?

  Wow.

• 16:24Speaker 03

It's really, it's really nice in a, like an alcoholic beverage with, this is a Mexican lime.

• 16:31Amy Poehler?

  Wow.

• 16:31Speaker 03

It's yellow. It's wonderful. And some of the lemon verbena, you can put like flowers in your drink.

• 16:37Amy Poehler?

I live in LA now. What's happened?

• 16:41Speaker 03

  Well, hi, remember me?

• 16:43Amy Poehler?

I know, you're very, this is very LA.

• 16:45Speaker 03

Look, you have your own kale.

• 16:48Amy Poehler?

  Greta brought her own kale.

• 16:49Speaker 03

  This is bad.

• 16:50Amy Poehler?

She brought her own kale. I mean, in LA, you have to have it in your car.

• 16:53Speaker 03

  Yeah, at all times.

• 16:55Amy Poehler?

This, to me, is success, that you have a garden and you bring in your fruit to people. That is.

• 17:01Speaker 03

  Is it?

• 17:01Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 17:02Speaker 03

  Oh, gosh.

• 17:03Amy Poehler?

  That's success.

• 17:04Speaker 03

  Thank you.

• 17:04Amy Poehler?

We have done so much stuff together.

• 17:06Speaker 03

  We have.

• 17:07Amy Poehler?

I was like, looking at what we've worked on together, and I want to talk about all of it. We've worked in Broad City, we worked on a show called Old Soul, we worked on Sisters, Russian Doll. And I just want to start by saying, here's what I love about you. Not only are you super talented and so good at so many things, but I feel like you, how I would describe you is, you are a person who takes their work seriously, but not themselves seriously.

• 17:28Speaker 03

  Oh.

• 17:29Amy Poehler?

Would you think, would you agree that that's kind of true?

• 17:31Speaker 03

  Yeah, I do. I agree.

• 17:34Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 17:34Speaker 03

  Next question.

• 17:35Amy Poehler?

Okay. So, how did we first meet?

• 17:39Speaker 03

  How did we first meet?

• 17:40Amy Poehler?

Because I don't remember when we met. I mean, we met on some project that we worked on, but what, which one?

• 17:46Speaker 03

Did I audition for you first? I mean, I'm sure we've met.

• 17:50Amy Poehler?

  Was it Broad City?

• 17:51Speaker 03

  Maybe.

• 17:52Amy Poehler?

  Maybe?

• 17:53Speaker 03

That time in New York gets really confusing to me.

• 17:57Amy Poehler?

  Agreed, same.

• 17:58Speaker 03

And I feel like I end up talking about it a lot, because, you know, once you, you get in the habit of telling your story of how you started, and then you're like, telling the story, and then soon you're like, I don't even.

• 18:09Amy Poehler?

  Is this real?

• 18:10Speaker 03

  Did I, am I lying?

• 18:13Speaker 03

Because it's easier just to say the story.

• 18:15Amy Poehler?

Yeah, and who can prove it?

• 18:17Speaker 03

And then I did Broad City, and then, you know, I was on Girls, and then, but it was this really special, really important time for women, and women in comedy, and there was this moment, it was very distinct, too, because I think I was observing it somewhat from the outside a little bit, because I was coming off of doing theater, and I was like, really, just, I want to do straight theater. But Abby and Alana, and, you know, you and Tina, and Maya, and everyone on SNL. Briding the wings of that into Lena and Schumer and everyone. It was really, it was big.

• 18:56Amy Poehler?

I want to talk about going back because it's so interesting you bring up the theater part because in researching you, I did not know that you, before I met you, had already been on the West End.

• 19:08Speaker 03

No one cares. No one cares about that.

• 19:10Amy Poehler?

  I care about that.

• 19:11Speaker 03

  Really?

• 19:12Amy Poehler?

  Are you kidding me?

• 19:13Speaker 03

First of all, I know you love theater.

• 19:15Amy Poehler?

I don't know how people do it. So I want to ask you.

• 19:17Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 19:18Amy Poehler?

  Okay. But hold on.

• 19:19Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 19:19Amy Poehler?

Going back even farther. Your mom, classically trained pianist?

• 19:26Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 19:26Amy Poehler?

  Your dad?

• 19:27Speaker 03

  Doctor.

• 19:28Amy Poehler?

  Yeah. What kind of doctor?

• 19:30Speaker 03

  He is a physical therapist.

• 19:32Amy Poehler?

  I need him.

• 19:33Speaker 03

Do you? Yeah, let's go. What do you need? What's wrong?

• 19:36Amy Poehler?

  Well.

• 19:37Speaker 03

  What's wrong?

• 19:37Amy Poehler?

I said I wasn't gonna bring it up.

• 19:41Amy Poehler?

My fucking frozen shoulder is back, dude.

• 19:44Speaker 03

  No.

• 19:45Amy Poehler?

  I know.

• 19:46Speaker 03

  He can help with that.

• 19:46Amy Poehler?

Okay, so I need his number.

• 19:48Speaker 03

  Yeah, Dr. Lee.

• 19:48Amy Poehler?

And please, nobody call in. Nobody call in. This isn't even a call in show.

• 19:53Speaker 03

  Wait.

• 19:54Amy Poehler?

  Nobody.

• 19:55Speaker 03

I don't know. Do you want him to call in?

• 19:56Amy Poehler?

Nobody call in. Please don't give me your advice about frozen shoulder. I know all of it. I know all of it and I appreciate it, but I can't. Okay. This, we're cutting all this.

• 20:05Speaker 03

  I'm sweating.

• 20:07Amy Poehler?

Okay, your dad is a physical therapist.

• 20:12Amy Poehler?

So you have a left brain, right brain household growing up?

• 20:14Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 20:15Amy Poehler?

  What was, is that true?

• 20:17Speaker 03

Yeah. I mean, I guess that's what they say. They're like, ah, I don't know. My parents are weird. They're so amazing.

• 20:24Amy Poehler?

  Tell me.

• 20:24Speaker 03

  They're wild.

• 20:26Amy Poehler?

  What are they like?

• 20:27Speaker 03

They are, okay, well, I just took them to the Dior show.

• 20:30Amy Poehler?

  I saw that.

• 20:31Speaker 03

  I know.

• 20:32Amy Poehler?

  It's so nice.

• 20:32Speaker 03

Here's the thing, you know, they invited themselves.

• 20:38Speaker 03

Like, everyone is talking about what an incredible daughter I am.

• 20:41Amy Poehler?

  Okay, okay.

• 20:41Speaker 03

I got a text from my mom that was a screen grab of a picture of LACMA. This is a venue for the show.

• 20:48Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 20:48Speaker 03

And she was like, didn't say anything, just a picture of that. And an announcer that said, "Dior Cruise Show will be at LACMA with the new David Geffen gallery." And I kind of, I just, I didn't really respond right away.

• 21:05Speaker 03

Which I think made it worse.

• 21:06Amy Poehler?

You just gave it like a heart?

• 21:07Speaker 03

Oh, yeah. It was like, yeah.

• 21:08Amy Poehler?

Yeah. You sent an eggplant emoji.

• 21:10Speaker 03

Exactly. It was very confusing. And she's like, "I hate it when you do this." And, and no, she invited herself. She was like, "So, I'm coming."

• 21:19Amy Poehler?

  What time?

• 21:19Speaker 03

Yeah. And, and your dad's coming too, because it's not fair. He, he's coming too. If I'm coming, which is funny, I was like, "I didn't say you're coming."

• 21:28Amy Poehler?

Okay, let's break this down though. Because, do you feel obligated to say, you can say no?

• 21:35Speaker 03

  I could, but no, actually I can't.

• 21:38Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 21:40Speaker 03

  Okay. No, I can't.

• 21:41Amy Poehler?

Okay, okay. Because that's the dynamic.

• 21:43Speaker 03

A little bit when it comes to certain things. I also, okay, I mean, to be fair, I go to these things and it's, it's exciting, but to go with your parents, to go with my parents, it is something special.

• 21:55Amy Poehler?

  It is.

• 21:57Speaker 03

They've never been to a fashion show before.

• 21:59Amy Poehler?

What did they think of it?

• 22:00Speaker 03

  They were amazed.

• 22:01Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 22:02Speaker 03

They, they touched everything. They wanted everything. They took, there were these blankets that were meant to keep people, they, they grabbed all of them. They want, they, they have so many now. I mean, I, they, it was incredible. I, I don't know, I think they were, because sometimes they get shy. I don't know if you have this with family or relatives?

• 22:22Amy Poehler?

I wish. I wish my parents were shyer.

• 22:24Speaker 03

  Okay, so they're not?

• 22:26Amy Poehler?

They go right up to like, anybody.

• 22:28Speaker 03

Yeah, they'll go to like, "Brought it."

• 22:30Amy Poehler?

  We're big fans of yours.

• 22:31Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 22:32Amy Poehler?

"We want a picture before the night's over." Like, that kind of thing.

• 22:35Speaker 03

  They're the demanding type.

• 22:36Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 22:36Speaker 03

  Yeah. Like, a little entitled.

• 22:38Amy Poehler?

My parents were not shy, are not shy.

• 22:40Speaker 03

Well, my parents, my, the thing, I would rather that, but what makes it even more confusing is they're, they're both. It's like a light switch. They're either like, so, like, cosplaying, like, some sort of, like, silent, shy, demure.

• 22:54Speaker 03

Thing and then it'll just switch to super aggressive, super demanding. You know, do you know who my daughter is like that kind of stuff?

• 23:04Amy Poehler?

But your parents are first, are you first gen?

• 23:07Speaker 03

Um, they immigrated and had me here.

• 23:09Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 23:10Speaker 03

So I'm the first person in my family to go to school in America.

• 23:15Amy Poehler?

Got it. And they immigrated from Korea, met there and then they spoke Korean in the home or mostly English?

• 23:22Speaker 03

  Korean was my first language.

• 23:23Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 23:24Speaker 03

I had a really fucked up accent, actually, because we moved by kindergarten, I was in Brooklyn. And I had, we were living in Canarsie and I had like a Korean Brooklyn accent.

• 23:34Amy Poehler?

  What does that sound like?

• 23:35Speaker 03

They won't tell me. I want to know so bad.

• 23:37Amy Poehler?

Is there anyone that has that accent now that we can?

• 23:40Speaker 03

I keep pointing back people. I'm like, like her? Like that?

• 23:42Amy Poehler?

  And they're like, no.

• 23:43Speaker 03

No. No, but I went to ESL and I went to speech therapy and all of that. I'm dying to know.

• 23:49Amy Poehler?

  Oh, how funny.

• 23:50Speaker 03

  What does it sound like?

• 23:51Amy Poehler?

I want to talk about language in general because a lot of your work is like circles around that. Especially the most beautiful film, my favorite film of the past five, 10 years past lives, which is Sisters. Yeah.

• 24:06Amy Poehler?

  That's right.

• 24:07Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 24:07Amy Poehler?

But you're a little kid, you do singing competitions? Classical singing?

• 24:13Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 24:14Amy Poehler?

What's the difference between classical singing and singing?

• 24:17Speaker 03

Um, well, it was like, it was opera.

• 24:19Amy Poehler?

Okay, there we go. It was another way to say opera.

• 24:24Speaker 03

Well, yeah, but I did things like, oh, I, I won like the Bach Festival. I'm like, it's just so, what was I doing?

• 24:33Amy Poehler?

You were just being smart and good.

• 24:35Speaker 03

Doing so many things, but I was so into it.

• 24:38Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 24:39Speaker 03

And my, my siblings, both my siblings can sing pretty much every Italian aria because of me. Like they hate sing it at me now, but that's like, I was so into it.

• 24:51Amy Poehler?

You were singing Italian arias at what age?

• 24:53Speaker 03

I mean, middle school. I started in middle school. I was like a conductor of a children's choir at one point.

• 25:04Amy Poehler?

Did they ask you to do it?

• 25:05Speaker 03

No, they did not ask me to do it. I just did it. They were like, why is she doing that?

• 25:12Amy Poehler?

They were like, ma'am, you need to leave.

• 25:13Speaker 03

  Stop, stop doing that.

• 25:15Amy Poehler?

I mean, you're a big time achiever. I mean, you work really hard.

• 25:18Speaker 03

I do. I want to stop doing that.

• 25:20Amy Poehler?

Well, I mean, what is like a through line in all of your stuff? Is that, and what I meant in the very beginning is like, you really show up and you work really hard, but there's an ease to when you work. There's not a striving vibe about you at all, Greta. But you are, when you look at what you've done, like, before you arrived in New York, before you were getting all those acting parts, you were winning competitions and you were like studying theater and in like Broadway shows.

• 25:49Speaker 03

Basically, I had my first job right out of the gate in New York City, actually was Law and Order SVU. I did one episode of those.

• 25:57Amy Poehler?

  Okay, pause.

• 25:58Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 25:59Amy Poehler?

Okay, so we love Law and Order at this show.

• 26:04Speaker 03

  Yes, you do.

• 26:04Amy Poehler?

We've interviewed Mariska, the great Mariska Hargitay.

• 26:07Speaker 03

Yeah, I did. I did a scene with her.

• 26:09Amy Poehler?

  Okay, okay.

• 26:10Speaker 03

  Yep.

• 26:10Amy Poehler?

Now, I tend to sometimes stay a little bit away from SVU because...

• 26:16Speaker 03

  Too sexy.

• 26:18Amy Poehler?

Well, that's one way to put it.

• 26:23Amy Poehler?

Mariska's too damn sexy. Because I get worried about like, is it gonna be, is a girl gonna be in the drawer? Is she hanging from the pole? It's a lot.

• 26:34Speaker 03

  I was in the incest.

• 26:38Speaker 03

I knew it. I knew it. I was so afraid to ask.

• 26:41Amy Poehler?

It was such good residual. It was so upsetting. It did so well. Oh, God. Wait, okay, so you were...

• 26:51Amy Poehler?

That is the thing. I wanted, the young version of me wants to be in SVU or Law and Order, but you...

• 26:57Speaker 03

Okay, it was a really big deal. But so imagine though, that's my first job, right?

• 27:01Amy Poehler?

  Sure.

• 27:01Speaker 03

And I call my parents, immigrant parents, and I'm like, I did it. Oh, my gosh. Okay, it's airing this time. They, and they...

• 27:10Amy Poehler?

You didn't tell them what it...

• 27:11Speaker 03

No, I'm not gonna tell them, but I'm like, okay.

• 27:16Speaker 03

I don't know what, I don't know what they thought.

• 27:18Amy Poehler?

What do you remember about shooting that with Mariska and team?

• 27:21Speaker 03

Oh, just, I was like terrible, like, you know, I, the bells are like like the, I had no idea what I was doing.

• 27:29Amy Poehler?

People don't know that sometimes when you're in like a big studio.

• 27:31Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 27:31Amy Poehler?

  Before they start the scene.

• 27:33Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 27:33Amy Poehler?

They like ring this giant scary bell.

• 27:35Speaker 03

  Like a tornado's coming.

• 27:37Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 27:39Speaker 03

And instead of ducking and hiding or running.

• 27:42Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 27:43Speaker 03

  You're supposed to act.

• 27:44Amy Poehler?

Yeah, and they're like, now go, cry.

• 27:45Speaker 03

  Yeah, exactly.

• 27:48Amy Poehler?

  Did you have to cry?

• 27:49Speaker 03

What did I have to do? Oh, no, I had to, I was the roommate of the victim.

• 27:55Amy Poehler?

  Okay, that's, that's bad.

• 27:56Speaker 03

  So I wasn't participating.

• 27:57Amy Poehler?

God. Thank God. Great. So you just were around.

• 28:01Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 28:02Amy Poehler?

You were like, I don't even know, I didn't do it.

• 28:06Speaker 03

  Kind of, oh man.

• 28:08Amy Poehler?

You were like, I don't know, she was here last Tuesday night and, and then she wasn't.

• 28:13Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 28:13Amy Poehler?

All right, Putnam Spelling Bee is the next big job.

• 28:16Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 28:17Amy Poehler?

What is it like to do shows? How did you, I mean, you're a young person at the time. But what did you do to prep and get ready? I'm always very curious about people that are on Broadway.

• 28:26Speaker 03

Yeah, the, um, seven shows or eight shows a week. Um, I don't know, I think there are a lot of things happening. Cause I also, I graduated from Northwestern, which was, um, a Big Ten school. Like it was an incredible theater program and all of that, but it's also a Big Ten school. So I learned how to like, do like a keg stand and made all kinds of friends from Sheboygan, Wisconsin. And it was very formative.

• 28:53Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 28:53Speaker 03

And I kind of, um, then was bringing that sort of like, oh, I'm, I'm gonna like move to New York City and become an artist and live like a Sex and the City fantasy. But I had a very intense full-time job. And you kind of. It takes so much discipline and I think that, you know, it was hard.

• 29:14Amy Poehler?

  I bet.

• 29:15Speaker 03

I was 21. I was 21, 22, trying to figure out how to be a responsible professional, show up on time.

• 29:24Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 29:24Speaker 03

  You know, every time.

• 29:25Amy Poehler?

Right. But you're on the West End. I want to ask you about Mark Rylance.

• 29:29Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 29:29Amy Poehler?

I love him. He's an incredible actor.

• 29:31Speaker 03

Yes, he is. Yes. That whole experience was also very unique, very special. We did a play called La Bête. It's, uh, it was set in 16th century France and it was in iambic pentameter.

• 29:45Amy Poehler?

  Oh.

• 29:46Speaker 03

My character only spoke in words that rhymed with blue.

• 29:50Amy Poehler?

  Oh dear.

• 29:53Amy Poehler?

  Well.

• 29:54Speaker 03

  You say, oh dear.

• 29:56Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 29:56Speaker 03

  Oh dear is right.

• 29:57Amy Poehler?

That would definitely be one of those things that I would show up and I'd be like, oh man, I wish I knew this.

• 30:02Speaker 03

No, I think you would be like, yes.

• 30:05Amy Poehler?

  Really? I'd be into it?

• 30:05Speaker 03

  I think you would.

• 30:06Amy Poehler?

  Okay, cool.

• 30:06Speaker 03

But this is like, when, I guess in talking about this, I'm like, God, life is long. I'm like, I, wow. There's like so much stuff people have no idea about.

• 30:16Amy Poehler?

Well, you have had an amazing, interesting bunch of jobs. You have, you have toggled between very dramatic and very comedic, which few people can do well.

• 30:25Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 30:26Amy Poehler?

And you have gone back and forth and back and forth.

• 30:28Speaker 03

  I don't know why.

• 30:29Amy Poehler?

  Well, cause you're.

• 30:30Speaker 03

  It's tiring.

• 30:30Amy Poehler?

You're really good at both. Stop being so good at both. Stop being good at both.

• 30:35Speaker 03

  I don't know.

• 30:36Amy Poehler?

I mean, I'm always worried that we're gonna lose you because you're so naturally funny that.

• 30:44Speaker 03

You are gonna lose me into my garden. I'm gonna go in there and never come back. You're gonna make jokes to the.

• 30:50Amy Poehler?

The plants are gonna get bigger and bigger.

• 30:52Speaker 03

  And they're funny already.

• 30:55Amy Poehler?

No, I'm, I'm afraid we're gonna lose you to like the drama worlds and.

• 30:59Speaker 03

  Oh, you won't.

• 31:00Amy Poehler?

  Okay, all right. Whatever.

• 31:02Speaker 03

  No.

• 31:02Amy Poehler?

Okay, so then, um, here's something fun.

• 31:05Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 31:05Amy Poehler?

You and I have something in, in common that I don't think we ever talked about, which is that we both worked in restaurants.

• 31:11Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 31:11Amy Poehler?

And I do think there is like a very specific type of person that works in restaurants, especially like New York-y restaurants.

• 31:18Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 31:19Amy Poehler?

And you're younger than me, but I, I imagine we, at the same time in our lives, worked in like, kind of like fancy restaurants in New York. So we do something on the podcast where we ask a friend or someone to speak well behind your back and give me a question. We talked to Alison Roman today.

• 31:34Speaker 03

  Oh, my goodness.

• 31:35Amy Poehler?

  Yes. You're a Brooklyn buddy.

• 31:38Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 31:40Amy Poehler?

And she was with her cat Leonard and we were talking about, she was talking about so many things that she loves about you. Your ease as a person and as a host, your incredible style and like how you don't make anybody feel bad that you're the prettiest, coolest person.

• 32:01Amy Poehler?

You never make us feel bad about it, which, thank you, Greta. And, and also just your work ethic, like how you have this way of, of, of kind of getting things done that feels like somebody who used to work in the restaurant.

• 32:20Amy Poehler?

Because you were working with her, right? Where were you guys working together?

• 32:23Speaker 03

We were working for David Chang at the Momofuku Restaurants.

• 32:26Amy Poehler?

What was that like? That was a hot restaurant.

• 32:28Speaker 03

Fucking crazy. It was so, so fucking crazy.

• 32:32Amy Poehler?

  Crazy.

• 32:33Speaker 03

  I just, so hard.

• 32:34Amy Poehler?

  Hi, so hard.

• 32:36Speaker 03

So hard, so, so hard. But at that time in New York, though, it's like,

• 32:40Amy Poehler?

  What year was that?

• 32:42Speaker 03

From like 2007, 2008 to, I don't know. I mean, I was there on and off for a good five years, maybe more.

• 32:51Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 32:52Speaker 03

Like, I'd go do a job, I'd book something and think like, oh, goodbye. I'd have like a big goodbye.

• 32:59Amy Poehler?

  Like, I'm never coming back.

• 33:01Speaker 03

Yeah, like, see ya. Like, and like pick up the tab, you know, for like, oh, my God. My friends who worked in finance, I'd like book like one, one commercial and be like, I got this. I got these buddies, don't even worry about it. And then just come crawling back.

• 33:17Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 33:17Speaker 03

But that time for food was really exciting.

• 33:21Amy Poehler?

  I bet.

• 33:21Speaker 03

Because it was like David Chang, and we're friends now. We have kids the same age and, you know, we, we live really, really close and we have mutual friends and it's funny reminiscing about that time collectively because there's just, it's like chefs were rock stars and... Being a part of that was really exciting for all of us.

• 33:39Amy Poehler?

What's it like working at like a restaurant that is so hot? You know, that everybody wants to get to. What was the, what was it like?

• 33:46Speaker 03

  I was so powerful.

• 33:48Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 33:49Speaker 03

I was a hostess. I was like basically encouraged to be mean. So great.

• 33:54Amy Poehler?

  Incredible.

• 33:55Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 33:56Amy Poehler?

Okay, as a, as a past hostess of a very fancy restaurant.

• 34:00Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 34:00Amy Poehler?

What would you say to people never works?

• 34:03Speaker 03

  Oh.

• 34:04Amy Poehler?

You know what I mean? Like, what, when would people get, um, you know, what would they do that you'd be like absolutely not?

• 34:12Speaker 03

The culture was different then and you would easily tell someone, okay, it's gonna be four hours. That's not even within like a meal, a stretch of a meal time, like four hours, like dinner time is over. Like if, if you're starting, four hours is crazy.

• 34:31Amy Poehler?

Wait, four hours to get seated or four hours to eat?

• 34:34Speaker 03

Four hours to get seated, like wait time to like, to tell someone like.

• 34:38Amy Poehler?

And they're like, thank you mistress, may I have another?

• 34:41Speaker 03

Yeah. So do I just wait over here or do I like, do you want my phone number? Like, no, go away. That's what that means.

• 34:48Amy Poehler?

Yeah, four hours means it's not happening.

• 34:50Speaker 03

  Yeah, it's not happening.

• 34:51Amy Poehler?

Did you ever have people try to slip you cash?

• 34:54Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 34:55Amy Poehler?

And did they ever like try to like throw like fancy names around like?

• 34:59Speaker 03

Yes, but that, I, I, I think that that restaurant though, I don't know where you worked, that was really discouraged. So it was helpful. Like that just wouldn't work.

• 35:07Amy Poehler?

Sure. I mean, I, I, I feel like when I was waiting tables, there was, there was definitely a vibe of like a, a finance vibe, I guess is the only way to say it where, and let's be honest, it was finance bros.

• 35:21Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 35:22Amy Poehler?

Who were like, I'm willing to spend a lot of money here. Like that was the vibe, like, I know you might have a system and reservations.

• 35:31Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 35:31Amy Poehler?

  But I'm very rich.

• 35:33Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 35:34Amy Poehler?

I know. Like, I'm gonna have so many oysters.

• 35:38Speaker 03

  Where did you work?

• 35:41Amy Poehler?

I worked at a place called Aqua Grill.

• 35:43Speaker 03

  Oh my.

• 35:44Amy Poehler?

  Do you remember it?

• 35:45Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 35:45Amy Poehler?

  Rest in peace.

• 35:46Speaker 03

Oh my gosh, you're one of those bitches. Oh, I see it now.

• 35:51Amy Poehler?

Yeah, it was SoHo. We were like the SoHo gang.

• 35:54Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 35:54Amy Poehler?

And it was very like seafood forward.

• 35:57Speaker 03

Yeah, I know. Did you have to wear like a pressed shirt? A button down?

• 36:01Amy Poehler?

Yeah, I had to wear a button down and a button down and I think it was a maroon apron.

• 36:07Speaker 03

  Oh, wow.

• 36:07Amy Poehler?

  Remember maroon was really big?

• 36:09Speaker 03

  Yes, I do.

• 36:10Amy Poehler?

So Allison's question, sorry, so let me get back to Allison. So Allison's question was a really good one, I thought, which was like, what have you held on to? From your restaurant days? Like, how does it help you as an actor? Does it? Do you think about any of that? Like, is there any connection to what you do now?

• 36:30Speaker 03

I think like, you know, the expression being in the weeds? What that can feel like and like the crush of it and how exhausting it is. And I feel like that part that, I don't know, that kind of like, like multitasking, extreme multitasking, what we do.

• 36:49Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 36:50Speaker 03

I was like thinking about like something I shot where I was drowning.

• 36:55Amy Poehler?

  Oh, my God, acting.

• 36:56Speaker 03

I know, acting is so weird. Why do we do it?

• 37:00Amy Poehler?

  I don't know, I hate it.

• 37:01Speaker 03

  Yeah, I hate it too.

• 37:02Amy Poehler?

Oh, God, so why did you have to drown? And is this recent?

• 37:06Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 37:07Amy Poehler?

  Okay, so you were drowning.

• 37:08Speaker 03

  It's not for Toy Story.

• 37:11Amy Poehler?

  It's in that other movie.

• 37:13Speaker 03

But did you know, Amy, that acting, like you're drowning for something, is just drowning?

• 37:19Amy Poehler?

  I can't.

• 37:21Speaker 03

  Did you know that?

• 37:22Amy Poehler?

This is why you shouldn't do drama. There's no reason.

• 37:26Speaker 03

  Don't do it. It's not.

• 37:28Amy Poehler?

And even getting in water, absolutely not.

• 37:31Speaker 03

  No.

• 37:32Amy Poehler?

  No swimming, nothing.

• 37:33Speaker 03

  No.

• 37:34Amy Poehler?

So, yeah, right, they're like, okay, so do the fake drowning. It's like, okay, I guess it's the swallowing water.

• 37:40Speaker 03

You have to choke and you have to, and when it's really good, they don't know if it's good, if you're acting, if you're... Dying?

• 37:49Amy Poehler?

  Oh.

• 37:50Speaker 03

How are they gonna know that? And they tell you things like, well, you give them the signal, like hand signals. It's like, but if you're dying, how are you gonna give the signal?

• 38:00Amy Poehler?

Yeah, you can't give them the signal because it really breaks the mood.

• 38:02Speaker 03

It breaks the mood. And also, you want to be good. So inherently, if you're like, oh, it turns out, maybe you don't. But if you are successful enough at the drown, then you, it's impossible to distinguish between real and not, you know?

• 38:23Amy Poehler?

Well, this goes under a thing I like to say, don't be good at things you don't want to do.

• 38:27Speaker 03

  Right.

• 38:28Amy Poehler?

So if you're good at the drown, you're gonna get asked to do it again. So be careful. Because if that scene is...

• 38:35Speaker 03

There was a lot of it.

• 38:36Amy Poehler?

Yeah, and they're gonna be like, let's get Greta, she's good, she's good. You have to get scuba certified? Oh, my God. No scuba, no scuba. People should not scuba. Sorry, I have a lot of hot takes today. But scuba, absolutely not.

• 41:27Amy Poehler?

  Okay, you have two boys.

• 41:28Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 41:28Amy Poehler?

And I'm the mother of two boys. And they are how old?

• 41:32Speaker 03

Okay, let's see. Apollo is nine now, and Raph just turned seven.

• 41:37Amy Poehler?

So, having a seven and nine-year-old, those are kind of delicious times for boys. What's it like being the mom of boys?

• 41:44Speaker 03

  Ugh, I'm obsessed with them.

• 41:47Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 41:48Speaker 03

  Oh, God.

• 41:49Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 41:50Speaker 03

  I love them so much.

• 41:52Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 41:53Speaker 03

  Ugh, it's so annoying.

• 41:55Amy Poehler?

  Yeah. They're your little husbands.

• 41:57Speaker 03

They are. They're my little husbands.

• 42:00Amy Poehler?

  Yep.

• 42:01Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah. Okay.

• 42:03Amy Poehler?

  No, they're better than husbands.

• 42:04Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 42:05Amy Poehler?

They're your best friends. They're your best friends slash son husbands. No, let's get it right. How have you changed from being like because you're a mom now?

• 42:14Speaker 03

I mean, everything's changed. Everything's changed. Um, I, God, I'm also a boy mom and I think that is specific and I never like thought about that one way or the other. And I look at other moms who are not boy moms. I'm like, oh.

• 42:31Amy Poehler?

Okay, let's talk about it because I also am a boy mom.

• 42:33Speaker 03

Wait, how old are yours now?

• 42:35Amy Poehler?

My guys are getting old. They're like 15, almost 16 and 17.

• 42:39Speaker 03

  No.

• 42:39Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, they're.

• 42:40Speaker 03

Oh, no. 15 and 17? No.

• 42:44Amy Poehler?

Yes, I know. They're like driving and out in the world and.

• 42:48Speaker 03

  Oh, God.

• 42:49Amy Poehler?

I know. And almost voting and, um, but you, I want to talk about it because, you know, there's a joke about boy mom, but there is something very interesting about.

• 42:59Speaker 03

Wait, what's a joke about boy mom?

• 43:01Amy Poehler?

Well, the joke is kind of that boy moms are, are, I guess, like a little more worn down because,

• 43:09Amy Poehler?

you know, not all boys, of course, but and not all people, kids that identify as male, but in general, you have to play.

• 43:20Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 43:20Amy Poehler?

  There's a lot of play.

• 43:22Speaker 03

Why do you think I'm so tan?

• 43:24Amy Poehler?

  You're just always outside playing.

• 43:26Speaker 03

I'm just out. I'm like running on the bicycle. I'm, I'm like, I'm doing stuff.

• 43:32Amy Poehler?

  I know.

• 43:33Speaker 03

  With the boys.

• 43:33Amy Poehler?

I know. You're like, it's always like camp. It's like, let's go run them out.

• 43:37Speaker 03

Yeah, let's go. Every day. Just, you gotta run them like dogs.

• 43:41Amy Poehler?

You do. And, and, um, uh, yeah, cause, and I'm also talking about how much I want them to be outside and how much I want them to be in their bodies. And so what does that mean?

• 43:52Speaker 03

I have to be outside. Like I want them to play soccer. I'm playing soccer. Like I want them to, I'm, I'm doing all of it.

• 44:01Amy Poehler?

Do you like doing it? Are you an athletic person?

• 44:03Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 44:04Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 44:04Speaker 03

  Yeah, I do like it.

• 44:05Amy Poehler?

Yeah, did you play sports and like, what was your sport?

• 44:08Speaker 03

I did. I was like, I this, I'm such an actor. I was always like, good enough. I'm really good at faking it.

• 44:14Amy Poehler?

  Oh, my God, me too.

• 44:15Speaker 03

  You know what I mean?

• 44:16Amy Poehler?

  I was good with chatter.

• 44:17Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 44:19Amy Poehler?

Like, I didn't really quite have the athletic thing, but I was, I was really good at the talk.

• 44:24Speaker 03

  Yeah, same.

• 44:25Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 44:25Speaker 03

Same, but sometimes I get it wrong and the kids are like, what are you doing? Like, what?

• 44:29Amy Poehler?

Are you fast? Do you run?

• 44:31Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 44:32Amy Poehler?

  I knew it. Incredible.

• 44:33Speaker 03

  I know, but

• 44:33Amy Poehler?

  What's that like?

• 44:34Speaker 03

Again, had to do that for a movie.

• 44:36Amy Poehler?

  Oh, God, that's right.

• 44:37Speaker 03

  Don't do it. Don't, don't run in a movie.

• 44:39Amy Poehler?

Don't worry, nobody's gonna ask me to run for a movie.

• 44:43Amy Poehler?

  It is so hard.

• 44:45Speaker 03

  It's so, so hard.

• 44:48Amy Poehler?

  Running is-

• 44:49Speaker 03

  It is so hard.

• 44:51Amy Poehler?

  You run-

• 44:51Speaker 03

It's bad for you. It's actually bad for you.

• 44:53Amy Poehler?

  I absolutely agree.

• 44:54Speaker 03

Yeah, I had to run in something where-

• 44:57Amy Poehler?

What did you have to run in?

• 44:58Speaker 03

For Tron. I had to pretend that I was gonna be killed if I didn't run for my life, okay? So, and if you think about that movie and you think about like the end, like, no, I'm gonna say like, half of that movie, my character is running for her life and I'm not like, you just have to sprint. There's no way to train for that.

• 45:21Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 45:21Speaker 03

And my character isn't a marathon runner, so it doesn't justify me like, it's just like,

• 45:26Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 45:26Speaker 03

Me in this state, then suddenly running like, I don't know, like 13 miles, like, in one, you know, a night shoot where I'm just-

• 45:37Amy Poehler?

  What?

• 45:37Speaker 03

I broke, yeah. Again, I was like, why am I doing this?

• 45:40Amy Poehler?

  You ran 13 miles?

• 45:41Speaker 03

I measured and, yeah, with, I forgot how many takes we did where this one, well, yeah, there's a shot where I was like, running along the length of a pier and they had to bring in the, we shut down production because the next day I took one step and I couldn't, I couldn't walk.

• 45:57Amy Poehler?

Of cour-, yeah, of course, cuz you, you basically ran a half marathon without any training.

• 46:02Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 46:02Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 46:03Speaker 03

  I mean, I train, I train- I trained, but I didn't train in the right way. I mean, I didn't know how, like, I didn't know how.

• 46:10Amy Poehler?

I remember doing Blades of Glory, this ice skating movie. And the, we had an incredible, like, ice dancing coach who, like, was in the Olympics. And she would just be teaching me. And I was like, I'm not going to be able to do this. Like, I am an actor. I will try my best. But there's, I can't learn how to be an ice dancer. I don't, if you gave me 15 years, if you gave me all the money in the world, like, we're gonna have to, we're gonna work, try to work around this.

• 46:44Speaker 03

So you would just tell her this, and then what would she say?

• 46:47Amy Poehler?

Well, really good coaches, you know, they just are like, they're like, yeah, but you got this.

• 46:53Speaker 03

  Right. And you're like, no.

• 46:54Amy Poehler?

And I'm like, I do not have this.

• 46:58Amy Poehler?

And to your point about the chatter, I would, we would have our, like, workouts, which I dreaded, even though she was so wonderful. And I would, I learned, I was like, oh, you know what? If I get a little coffee in her and ask her a couple of questions, I can burn some of this time. Because we only had an hour. So I would buy her coffee, and we'd sit, and I remember, she would sit in front of the clock, and we'd be right behind her, and I'd be like, what is going on with your daughter?

• 47:26Amy Poehler?

And she'd be like, okay, well, we have to get to work. But anyway, and she would, because I was like, please, don't put me on the ice. Anyway.

• 47:33Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 47:34Amy Poehler?

Did you train, but you now run on your own in life? Okay, good. Thank God. God, don't run again.

• 47:42Speaker 03

  No.

• 47:43Amy Poehler?

  Don't ever run again.

• 47:43Speaker 03

It's really bad for you. Don't do it.

• 47:45Amy Poehler?

Um, okay, when I met you, you had done a bunch of TV, like you said, you were on Broad City, you were on Girls, you were doing a bunch of different things. And we worked together on a show called Old Soul with Natasha Lyonne, a pilot that did not get picked up.

• 48:00Speaker 03

  Right.

• 48:01Amy Poehler?

And was, the, a basic idea was Natasha was kind of the youngest person in a group of very old people. And we gathered these incredible actors, Fred Willard, Richard Benjamin, Ellen Burstyn, Marla Gibbs, Rita Moreno.

• 48:17Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 48:17Amy Poehler?

And it was a crazy cast, shot, not picked up.

• 48:21Speaker 03

  Yeah. Insane. Insane.

• 48:24Amy Poehler?

What do you remember about that? Do you have any memories of that time?

• 48:27Speaker 03

Yeah, I remember Rita Moreno told me I was on my phone too much.

• 48:31Speaker 03

So funny. It really wasn't. I still think about it. It's like one of those things that you just can't, I can't let go of that because I'm like, I was barely, and I'm, I'm not on social media now. Like, I'm very, I, I don't consider myself to be addictive. I'm not. I wasn't. But she told me I was.

• 48:49Amy Poehler?

It's funny. I'm having a memory that I did a movie with, um, uh, Charles Grodin, a movie called The Ex, and he said, "You're always on your phone."

• 49:00Amy Poehler?

And I put my phone down. Like, I remember speaking like,

• 49:04Amy Poehler?

"Thank you for that feedback." But Rita,

• 49:07Speaker 03

  Rita, yeah.

• 49:08Amy Poehler?

  Gave it to you, yeah.

• 49:09Speaker 03

  She did.

• 49:09Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 49:10Speaker 03

But she also, she, I think she had just written a book, or I don't know. She was giving a lot of sort of like,

• 49:16Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 49:17Speaker 03

life advice and sort of her take on things. And it's so fun.

• 49:21Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, it was really fun.

• 49:22Speaker 03

It was so fun to hang out with that crew. I remember it feeling like such a sure thing.

• 49:28Amy Poehler?

  I know.

• 49:28Speaker 03

  I know, right?

• 49:29Amy Poehler?

Okay. And then we worked together on Sisters.

• 49:33Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 49:33Amy Poehler?

Which is a movie, uh, for people, Paul Lappel wrote it. Me and Tina were in it. It was a crazy talented cast, none of whom worked enough, in my opinion. It was like, weeks and weeks.

• 49:45Speaker 03

What, what, how? Makes no sense. What, what was happening?

• 49:50Amy Poehler?

I don't know. It was just like, you and Kate McKinnon and, um, Bobby Moynihan, just like, at craft service, just like,

• 49:56Speaker 03

  Just there.

• 49:58Amy Poehler?

  Waiting for so long.

• 49:59Speaker 03

Because that sinkhole, remember there was that, that soundstage?

• 50:03Amy Poehler?

  That's right.

• 50:04Speaker 03

We had to be indoors. The, the house, like, all the plants were dying.

• 50:09Amy Poehler?

  That's right.

• 50:10Speaker 03

They were decomposing. Do you remember?

• 50:12Amy Poehler?

Yeah, we had to build a sinkhole. That's right. It did start to smell.

• 50:17Speaker 03

They were just there for some, they built us, uh, not you guys, but they built like, Bobby, Kate, um, um, who else? John Glazer.

• 50:25Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 50:26Speaker 03

These little plywood cabins, like little,

• 50:30Speaker 03

  Boxes.

• 50:31Amy Poehler?

  To live in?

• 50:32Speaker 03

  They were like dog houses.

• 50:34Amy Poehler?

  To sit in?

• 50:34Speaker 03

To sit. I don't know what they wanted us to do in them. But that's what we had and we were.

• 50:40Amy Poehler?

  Get in the box.

• 50:41Speaker 03

Get in the box. And we would just wait. Why were we there for so long? That movie took so long.

• 50:48Amy Poehler?

It did. And, and also I can remember, because everybody on the, John Leguizamo, there were a lot of like very talented people on the movie.

• 50:56Speaker 03

  John Cena was there.

• 50:57Amy Poehler?

And, um, like barren holds, so many people, but I can remember, and, and when you're smart enough to be working for a long time, there's definitely a feeling when you walk into something and you're like, okay, we're gonna be shooting at like a sinkhole for two weeks.

• 51:10Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 51:10Amy Poehler?

Where you start to angle, like, you're like, do I, do you think my character is here?

• 51:15Speaker 03

  Needs to be here.

• 51:16Amy Poehler?

Like, I wonder if she's already left the party.

• 51:19Speaker 03

You are a sister. Like, you, you are a sister. And you're like.

• 51:24Amy Poehler?

Could she have left the party? I feel like she's gone. And there was a couple of moments where like camera was shooting this way and whoever was in the background was like, oh my God, Samantha Bee was in, I was like, I was like, I'm gonna be in the background of this shot for the next two weeks.

• 51:41Speaker 03

  Oh, but.

• 51:42Amy Poehler?

  So I apologize.

• 51:43Speaker 03

Thank you. Thank you. I came here to accept this apology. Now I have it. But it's so nice, though, thinking about, I feel like that doesn't happen anymore.

• 51:54Amy Poehler?

  I know.

• 51:54Speaker 03

No one would say yes to that anymore.

• 51:57Amy Poehler?

  Everyone would be like, what?

• 51:58Speaker 03

  You actually can't.

• 51:59Amy Poehler?

Everyone would be like, no, that's, we have, we have fought, our unions have fought, we did not do that anymore. Our unions have fought against the wooden boxes. No, but I remember, I remember that time when we got to improvise together. And I feel like that scene that we got to do, do together is really funny. And I, but I, but I'm curious if you think it still holds up?

• 52:19Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 52:19Amy Poehler?

  It does.

• 52:20Speaker 03

  Yeah, it does.

• 52:21Amy Poehler?

I think it does too. Why? Because it's tricky territory. So there's a scene in the film where Greta's character is playing like, who you, what you first think is like this kind of submissive, quiet, but like secretly angry.

• 52:36Speaker 03

  Nail technician.

• 52:36Amy Poehler?

Nail technician, who you think cannot speak English. Very well, and is just kind of like dealing with these ridiculous women. And my character is doing that like gross kind of liberal thing where she's trying to connect like, tell me about you, you know, and how do you pronounce your name and all that stuff.

• 52:52Speaker 03

  And let me save you.

• 52:53Amy Poehler?

Yes, exactly. Very white savior bullshit. And we are doing it back and forth. And but it does, it does walk a little bit of a line. And it is the bigger question for me about like, in your career, I'm sure you've had to decide over and over again, do I want to play a character that could seem stereotypical? Do I want to, do I want to speak Korean in this part? Do I want to, like, like, what has that been like for you to have to try to figure that out? Everybody has to kind of figure out how they're going to exploit what they naturally know how to do at the beginning of their career. But it's not always based on their ethnicity. So like,

• 53:33Speaker 03

  Right.

• 53:33Amy Poehler?

How do you, how do you juggle that or manage that or have you?

• 53:36Speaker 03

  It's annoying.

• 53:37Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

It's annoying to navigate. But with that, that was an easy decision for me because, and I, and I understand the kind of the conversation around it and what was tricky to navigate. But it's just, it's people. Like, I, I have so much love for Heon because like, I know that chick. I know her. I know her so deep. And I, some of my funniest experiences at nail salons, I was Maura. I, you know, it's, it's switched. And yeah, I think that scene also works because, you know, status is inverted and,

• 54:22Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 54:22Speaker 03

And I think that it's easy to assume, and I think it's easy to assume if you are not in the marginalized position to assume like, oh no, like this is, this is hurtful or this is.

• 54:37Speaker 03

But I think when you're looking at people and for me in that moment, she is in total control. It's so funny. And I've been in that situation at the nail salon.

• 54:50Amy Poehler?

That's the thing about comedy, it's tricky, right? It's like if it's funny,

• 54:56Amy Poehler?

then there's something that's striking the right chord, but you can't always figure out what it is.

• 55:01Speaker 03

And it's not funny unless it's true. And there's something about that that was very true. And I felt like what we were doing and what the opportunity was, was a chance to play something that rang very true for me. And I could see, I knew it was gonna be funny. I knew she was gonna be funny. And there were many opportunities for her to come alive and like, yeah, be a person.

• 55:28Amy Poehler?

Yeah. Yeah. And then you play someone completely different in Russian Doll. You play this like beautiful, kind of like sweet birthday baby, let's get ready to party, like the version of like who you wanna have greet you at the door, like the ultimate hostess.

• 55:46Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 55:47Amy Poehler?

And also just this kind of like lost but free spirit, like so aspirational, this woman. What was your experience like on Russian Doll? What is it like to say a line over and over again? And like for that line to become so iconic? And like also to be on a show that was such a hit?

• 56:06Speaker 03

Yeah. How wild was that? I mean, well, you know, at first I said no.

• 56:13Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 56:13Speaker 03

I was like, there's no way. I was, I just felt like, I don't know how to do this.

• 56:18Amy Poehler?

Okay, why did, do you remember why you said no?

• 56:20Speaker 03

Yeah, I was like, I don't know how to say the same line again and again.

• 56:24Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 56:25Speaker 03

I asked you, I said, can we just shoot it once and you can reuse that?

• 56:28Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 56:29Speaker 03

  And you said no.

• 56:30Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 56:32Amy Poehler?

So for people who don't know, I produced Russian Doll along with Natasha and Leslie Headland. And we were, and we were talking about Greta's character specifically being like this reset. You are the reset. You're kind of home for that character. You really are a safe person. You play as, even though you play this twinkly, sparkly, like adventure crazy lady, you are safe.

• 56:57Speaker 03

Yes. And there with the chicken and it's like, yeah.

• 57:01Amy Poehler?

So you have to do the same line over and over again, because in the show, they start over and over again. And it's kind of like Natasha's character has to reset. So how did, what, what was it like to do? Was it like, did you get into it?

• 57:13Speaker 03

Well, I said the line, I think that way once. And then I realized that was the way I had to say it every single time. And I can't say it felt like I had landed like the perfect way I wanted to say it. It was already, like I was like, that's, that's the one. Okay. Great. Moving on.

• 57:40Amy Poehler?

Let's get her in, let's get her, let's get to her drowning.

• 57:42Speaker 03

  Yep. Okay.

• 57:43Amy Poehler?

  Get to the drowning scene.

• 57:44Speaker 03

  Start running. Okay, moving on.

• 57:46Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 57:48Speaker 03

But you know, that, I love acting with Natasha.

• 57:53Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 57:54Speaker 03

  My buddy Tosh.

• 57:55Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 57:56Speaker 03

And it's been some time, but there is a thing with her where I feel, it, it feels different for me than, than other people that I've acted with. There's something, there's something that happens when I act with her. And, and that was true for Russian Doll too, because it's not, I can't say that there, I could lie and tell you that I came up with some like insane backstory and boarded like each time we went back. But it wasn't, it wasn't that. It was just about friendship.

• 58:29Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 58:30Speaker 03

And like, it's just like a connection that you have with someone. And Natasha, over the years, I, I just like, she's just one of those people that I had like a very instant connection with.

• 58:40Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 58:40Speaker 03

And you just look into those huge fucking eyes and you are just so locked in and. And it's just, it's so nice. Yeah.

• 58:49Amy Poehler?

It's, it's, I think it's what anchored that show was the genuine chemistry between the two of you. Cause you would work together. You really had such great respect for each other. You work so well together. And that show is about like, who, who is, who are my chosen family? Who are the people that are gonna be like at my birthday party, saving me from myself? Like, who are they gonna be?

• 59:14Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 59:15Amy Poehler?

And you can't really fake that. And you definitely had that.

• 59:19Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 59:19Amy Poehler?

Okay. But now I'm moving on to drink.

• 59:25Speaker 03

Is it weird that I'm drinking Diet Coke, honestly? Like, I feel like,

• 59:28Amy Poehler?

No, I do. You are the first guest to have a soda, and it is in a clear glass, which we probably forced you to do.

• 59:35Speaker 03

Yeah. You know what? I'm so tired. I'm just tired.

• 59:38Amy Poehler?

Now, is that a, is that a straight up Coke or a diet?

• 59:41Speaker 03

It's a Diet Coke. I mean, that's what was available.

• 59:43Amy Poehler?

Yeah. You're not gonna get any, any judgment here. Sometimes you need a soda, like a little soda.

• 59:50Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 59:51Amy Poehler?

  Are you a coffee drinker?

• 59:52Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 59:53Amy Poehler?

And why are you so tired?

• 59:56Amy Poehler?

  Too personal?

• 59:57Speaker 03

  No, I mean,

• 59:58Amy Poehler?

What's going on with your sleep? Let's get to it.

• 59:59Speaker 03

God, I know. Look, I, I was like, I don't wanna talk about perimenopause, cause this is like all I'm talking about in like HRTs. Your frozen, which one is frozen?

• 1:00:10Amy Poehler?

See, I brought it up again. I said to Jenna.

• 1:00:13Speaker 03

  Yeah?

• 1:00:13Amy Poehler?

I was like, I'm not, I said, I'm like, not gonna talk about it. Cause it's like, it makes me feel so old. And women out there are suffering. You're not old, you're beautiful. But I am an old, old crone. I'm an old crony witch who can't lift her arm.

• 1:00:26Speaker 03

I'm trailing behind you. I'm right there.

• 1:00:29Amy Poehler?

Left, left, left shoulder. Millennials are just getting old, and I'm here to tell you as Gen X,

• 1:00:35Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:00:36Amy Poehler?

First of all, welcome. Like, we welcome you. Like, coming on the other side of it is not bad. It's actually kinda nice to not be young, like, considered young. It's kinda nice.

• 1:00:46Speaker 03

But you have a frozen shoulder.

• 1:00:47Amy Poehler?

But it's a nightmare for the body. It's a nightmare for the body. Every day. The body.

• 1:00:52Speaker 03

  I know. It's happening.

• 1:00:55Amy Poehler?

  I don't know.

• 1:00:56Speaker 03

I, like, I don't actually drink soda. I am today.

• 1:01:01Speaker 03

You know what I mean? Like, do you remember when we were kids?

• 1:01:04Amy Poehler?

Where you're like, whatever it takes.

• 1:01:05Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:01:06Amy Poehler?

Let's try it. What is your sleep routine? What do you like to do? Like, how do you? Talk to me about your nighttime routine.

• 1:01:13Speaker 03

My nighttime? Well, when I'm home, right? And I'm...

• 1:01:16Amy Poehler?

  Too much travel.

• 1:01:17Speaker 03

  Yeah. Too much travel? What?

• 1:01:19Amy Poehler?

  Yeah. You're traveling for work.

• 1:01:20Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah, the travel. Yes.

• 1:01:22Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:22Speaker 03

Too much. Like, oh, my God, I was in Korea two weeks ago, three weeks ago.

• 1:01:26Amy Poehler?

Okay, this is why you're so tired.

• 1:01:27Speaker 03

  But, yeah, but...

• 1:01:29Amy Poehler?

What were you doing in Korea?

• 1:01:30Speaker 03

I was, it was a film festival.

• 1:01:32Amy Poehler?

Well, speaking of Korea, and thank you for that transition. Past lives.

• 1:01:39Speaker 03

  What?

• 1:01:40Amy Poehler?

  Greta.

• 1:01:40Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 1:01:41Amy Poehler?

I believe I may have texted you.

• 1:01:43Speaker 03

  I think you did.

• 1:01:43Amy Poehler?

I, I mean, that movie is spectacular. Your performance in it, everyone's performance in it. Celine is so beautifully directed.

• 1:01:51Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:01:53Amy Poehler?

It's just like, we were talking about it earlier today in anticipation of this, and we were just talking about like the meditative quality of it, the rhythm of it, like the music of it. It's like everyone is watching and being watched at different times. It's this big, beautiful triangle. The actors are so great. You are so good in it. It is, it must feel so wonderful to be in such a good movie.

• 1:02:22Amy Poehler?

  Does it?

• 1:02:27Speaker 03

  Yeah, it feels so good.

• 1:02:29Amy Poehler?

  It must.

• 1:02:30Speaker 03

  It feels so good.

• 1:02:31Amy Poehler?

  It's so good.

• 1:02:33Speaker 03

It feels good to be in a good movie.

• 1:02:39Speaker 03

It feels really good. You want it all the time. That's what you want.

• 1:02:43Amy Poehler?

I know. Your performance in it is so beautiful. All the awards.

• 1:02:50Speaker 03

  Thanks.

• 1:02:50Amy Poehler?

And like, I know the award season is long over. That's been many.

• 1:02:55Amy Poehler?

Did you win? I don't even know. Did you win? Shit.

• 1:02:57Speaker 03

  No, I wasn't even nominated.

• 1:03:00Amy Poehler?

  What?

• 1:03:01Speaker 03

In the end, yeah. But you know, no one even knows that. No one, so I just pretend.

• 1:03:04Amy Poehler?

No one knows. Yeah, no one knows. A hundred percent. No one ever remembers who won. I couldn't have introduced you as Academy Award winner, Greta Lee. No one would notice.

• 1:03:12Speaker 03

And I wouldn't have sent any, I wouldn't have corrected you.

• 1:03:14Amy Poehler?

No, no. Um, that's bullshit, of course. Um, your, what, what does Celine like to work with? Like.

• 1:03:22Speaker 03

You know, it was her first, it was her first movie.

• 1:03:25Amy Poehler?

  Crazy.

• 1:03:25Speaker 03

I think it was her first time.

• 1:03:27Amy Poehler?

Celine Song, the director of Past Lives. So was it just Collaboration City there?

• 1:03:32Speaker 03

Yeah, it was its own thing.

• 1:03:33Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:34Speaker 03

I'm never gonna have anything like that. Um, I felt like it's, I felt like, oh, we're, we're making something that it's gonna be something.

• 1:03:43Amy Poehler?

You did, you felt it at the time.

• 1:03:44Speaker 03

You could, you could feel that. And it felt very, uh, yeah, extremely collaborative. She'd done a lot of theater and it was so personal and it was just, I, I, everyone was taking such a big risk too. Like, I had no idea if I was gonna be able to act in Korean.

• 1:04:02Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:02Speaker 03

And, and also to, I'd never been the number one in a movie, the, on the call sheet ever before. I'd never done drama in that way. Like, I hadn't done realism. Like, okay, you, you'll understand this. I, I had, I realized this, this instinct that I needed to turn off, where I would improvise my face off. And I needed to turn, I needed to stop doing that.

• 1:04:31Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:31Speaker 03

Where I would fill the silence with jokes. Can you imagine Past Lives with like, oh, what's that, like, oh, would you get that Russian daughter? It's like, cr- cr-.

• 1:04:42Amy Poehler?

  You speak in my language.

• 1:04:43Speaker 03

She'd be like, she'd be like, stop. Stop that.

• 1:04:48Speaker 03

  And be like, what?

• 1:04:51Speaker 03

Which is also such an immature response, like, what?

• 1:04:54Amy Poehler?

  What?

• 1:04:54Speaker 03

I'm not doing anything. The whole idea that the camera was gonna stay on my face with nothing happening, I, it wa- like, I could not handle it.

• 1:05:07Amy Poehler?

  Well done.

• 1:05:08Speaker 03

Like, I would, I would be like, cut.

• 1:05:11Amy Poehler?

  Cut. We got it.

• 1:05:12Speaker 03

Like, what are you doing? Just long shots, just looking out the window?

• 1:05:17Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 1:05:18Speaker 03

  For so long.

• 1:05:19Amy Poehler?

Yes. It's, that is, thank you for sharing that because I so relate.

• 1:05:25Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:05:25Amy Poehler?

It is like my hardest thing to just be kind of like still in the moment. Like you said, sit in the kind of like in-between-ness of it all.

• 1:05:34Speaker 03

  Right.

• 1:05:34Amy Poehler?

And that film does that beautifully. Like you, that dreamy quality of the in-between-ness of everything. Whatever you had to adjust, you adjusted perfectly. Because it is so, I, I recommend to anybody who has not watched Past Lives. I mean, it's my favorite kind of like melancholy, nostalgic, like kind of happy, sad, love dream. And yes, it was a side of you that, of course, I knew that you had, but I don't think a lot of people had got to see, which is to your point, the kind of like space

• 1:06:13Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:06:13Amy Poehler?

given to you and given to the project was really amazing.

• 1:06:16Speaker 03

Yeah. I think I could, at one point, I counted how many seconds was the longest number of seconds that I'd been in one take. Like literally for the frame, for it to stay on my face for longer than, I think it was like a couple of minutes.

• 1:06:32Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:32Speaker 03

  Which was really wild.

• 1:06:34Amy Poehler?

Well, you know what? It makes me, it leads me to the question that I, like, and I want to form the right question because I, I, it's the idea of being looked at and watched in general. Even though we're in this profession and you would think we would be comfortable with it.

• 1:06:50Speaker 03

  I don't like it.

• 1:06:50Amy Poehler?

  And yet.

• 1:06:52Speaker 03

  What are we doing?

• 1:06:53Amy Poehler?

No, but you are fashion, like, you are a fashion icon, Greta.

• 1:07:01Speaker 03

I don't like people looking at me.

• 1:07:02Amy Poehler?

  You're basically a model.

• 1:07:03Speaker 03

  I don't.

• 1:07:03Amy Poehler?

You were, you're so, you have the best clothes in the world. You're incredible at posing.

• 1:07:08Speaker 03

  Thanks.

• 1:07:11Amy Poehler?

And there's something that comes over you.

• 1:07:13Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:07:14Amy Poehler?

  Were you like?

• 1:07:14Speaker 03

It's acting. It's acting. It's like, character acting.

• 1:07:18Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:07:19Speaker 03

I think when, ever since I was really little, I just wanted to be a male character actor.

• 1:07:24Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 1:07:25Speaker 03

Like, I wanted to be one of the guys. And I, and I think that posing on a red carpet is not anything close to like, you know, De Niro or like.

• 1:07:36Amy Poehler?

But, but, okay, I'm gonna make a connection to De Niro.

• 1:07:39Speaker 03

  Uh huh.

• 1:07:39Amy Poehler?

Is, when I see you being, like, when, when we're all watching you on the, I'm just talking about like, fashion carpet stuff, because it takes a certain, like, you have to kind of withstand the, the gaze, the, the male gaze usually, but, but just the general gaze, that you have this very solid foundation in that moment that is very De Niro-esque. Which is, it's very baller, like, you, you have a very, like, confident vibe.

• 1:08:09Speaker 03

  Mm hmm.

• 1:08:10Amy Poehler?

And you know, you have great style, and you know what you like to wear.

• 1:08:14Speaker 03

  I do.

• 1:08:15Amy Poehler?

  Where does that come from?

• 1:08:16Speaker 03

I have great people, I have great people working with me.

• 1:08:19Amy Poehler?

Also, you're fucking Calvin Klein, ad. Jesus Christ, God.

• 1:08:23Speaker 03

  Oh, Jesus.

• 1:08:23Amy Poehler?

Running, but you know, and that running.

• 1:08:26Speaker 03

  But the abs, dude.

• 1:08:27Amy Poehler?

  The abs? Oh, God.

• 1:08:29Speaker 03

I mean, I don't wanna, I don't wanna objectify you, but you, what?

• 1:08:35Amy Poehler?

What is going on with your body in that? It's like, you're so rich.

• 1:08:39Speaker 03

  I'm just, I'm.

• 1:08:40Amy Poehler?

  It's, it was actually rude.

• 1:08:43Amy Poehler?

It was actually rude for people. Um, okay, okay.

• 1:08:49Amy Poehler?

  Um, Toy Story 5.

• 1:08:51Speaker 03

  Yes, Toy Story.

• 1:08:53Speaker 03

From Calvin Klein to Toy Story 5.

• 1:08:56Amy Poehler?

  Um, okay, Pixar.

• 1:08:58Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 1:08:59Amy Poehler?

Is this your first time working with Pixar?

• 1:09:01Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:09:02Amy Poehler?

Can you talk about the character you are in Toy Story 5? Can we talk about it?

• 1:09:05Speaker 03

I play the villain, the main new villain.

• 1:09:08Amy Poehler?

  Oh, my God, exciting.

• 1:09:09Speaker 03

  I play an iPad.

• 1:09:14Speaker 03

No, that's right. I play, her name is Lily Pad.

• 1:09:18Amy Poehler?

  Oh, perfect.

• 1:09:18Speaker 03

  She's an iPad.

• 1:09:19Amy Poehler?

  Oh, wow.

• 1:09:21Speaker 03

  It was just fun.

• 1:09:22Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:23Speaker 03

And the movie, the movie's so good.

• 1:09:25Amy Poehler?

  Oh, I bet.

• 1:09:25Speaker 03

  It really, Joan Cusack.

• 1:09:28Amy Poehler?

  Oh.

• 1:09:28Speaker 03

  Oh, my God.

• 1:09:29Amy Poehler?

  I love Joan Cusack.

• 1:09:30Speaker 03

I love her so much. What Joan does is just, I mean, oh, my gosh. I, I think I cried six times during like a, like a screening. It was really embarrassing, like with her.

• 1:09:42Amy Poehler?

  Oh.

• 1:09:42Speaker 03

And, and Tim, and I was just crying.

• 1:09:45Amy Poehler?

Oh, God, I love a Pixar cry. There's like nothing like it.

• 1:09:48Speaker 03

This is such a good, I think, if you like past lives, you are gonna love Toy Story 5. Serious.

• 1:09:56Amy Poehler?

  That's an incredible tagline.

• 1:09:58Speaker 03

  I'm serious. I'm serious.

• 1:10:01Amy Poehler?

  Oh.

• 1:10:01Speaker 03

It's really good. It's really sad.

• 1:10:04Amy Poehler?

I might be trying to put together what you're saying, but that sounds amazing.

• 1:10:08Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:10:08Amy Poehler?

Oh, wow. Speaking of Joan and things, people that we love and people who make us laugh, I always ask my guests, who are you listening to? What are you watching? What video, TV show, movie? What are you reading? Anything that you're doing right now to like laugh and enjoy. High, low, does not have to be fancy.

• 1:10:29Speaker 03

  Yeah. Okay, so.

• 1:10:31Amy Poehler?

  Are you ready?

• 1:10:32Speaker 03

My, um, something that I literally just started watching is my friend, uh, sending me these YouTube stain removal videos.

• 1:10:41Amy Poehler?

  Okay. Let's talk.

• 1:10:43Speaker 03

Okay, yeah. So there's, there's one guy.

• 1:10:47Amy Poehler?

  I love stain removal.

• 1:10:49Speaker 03

  You love it too?

• 1:10:50Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:50Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:10:50Amy Poehler?

  All right, here we go.

• 1:10:51Speaker 03

  Yeah, so.

• 1:10:52Amy Poehler?

  What should we type in?

• 1:10:54Speaker 03

Ink stain removal. Ink stain. I mean, let's start with the, you know, the toughest ones.

• 1:11:01Amy Poehler?

Ink stain is the toughest one, okay. Let's see.

• 1:11:04Speaker 03

  Gentle, gentleman, gentleman's Gazette.

• 1:11:09Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 1:11:10Speaker 03

The right ways to remove ink stains.

• 1:11:13Amy Poehler?

Okay, to remove ink stains, all right. So, uh.

• 1:11:16Speaker 03

  Gentleman's Gazette.

• 1:11:17Amy Poehler?

Greta's been watching The Right Way to Remove Ink Stains. Here we go. Again, I have got to get my commercials.

• 1:11:27Amy Poehler?

Off YouTube. I think actually YouTube reached out and offered a thing. And I was like, I don't, this just seems too hard. What do you, what do you mean? I like, what do you mean? I gotta get a new account. I mean, it just seems too much. Okay. Oh, cute.

• 1:11:43Speaker 03

  Yeah, right?

• 1:11:44Amy Poehler?

Okay, so this is a nice gentleman named Preston.

• 1:11:52Speaker 03

  Isn't that nice?

• 1:11:56Amy Poehler?

Yeah. Oh, so he tells you if it's an emergency, skip the intro.

• 1:12:00Speaker 03

And he's gonna tell you the first thing you need to do is make sure you get it off your hands.

• 1:12:04Amy Poehler?

I love this guy already. He's treating us like.

• 1:12:08Speaker 03

Like we're idiots. But sometimes if you found your way to this video, then it's nice, isn't it?

• 1:12:15Amy Poehler?

  Really nice.

• 1:12:16Speaker 03

And this is, he's, this is a condensed video.

• 1:12:19Amy Poehler?

Now Preston is pulling out a fountain pen, which.

• 1:12:21Speaker 03

Right. Oh, you don't use a fountain pen? You only sign your contracts in the fountain pen.

• 1:12:28Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:12:29Speaker 03

Wait, I know we're finishing up, but are you gardening now? Are you getting into it?

• 1:12:33Amy Poehler?

Thanks for asking. I am, I'm getting into it. I'm getting into it. Yeah.

• 1:12:38Speaker 03

Like, what's going on? What are you making?

• 1:12:40Amy Poehler?

Um, I'm, right now I've planted, um, uh, some lettuces, like easy, like lettuces.

• 1:12:48Speaker 03

  Lettuce is hard.

• 1:12:49Amy Poehler?

Is it hard? Lettuce is hard?

• 1:12:50Speaker 03

Lettuce is shit. Lettuce is the hardest.

• 1:12:54Amy Poehler?

It looks so easy. It's already done.

• 1:12:56Speaker 03

  Take it out.

• 1:12:58Amy Poehler?

  Take it out?

• 1:13:00Speaker 03

Rip it out? Because it, it's too hot for lettuce here.

• 1:13:05Amy Poehler?

Because this is what happened. I'm not gardening here, honey. I'm gardening on the east coast.

• 1:13:08Speaker 03

  Okay, good. Then you're fine.

• 1:13:09Amy Poehler?

Here, no way. Disgusting. Rip out the lettuce here. No, no, I'm doing it on the east coast. But it's still gonna be hot, but you're right. It does burn, doesn't it?

• 1:13:20Speaker 03

Yeah, and it, um, bolts, it, it flowers because it's too hot. And then it gets bitter.

• 1:13:27Amy Poehler?

I like that we're, we're ending with gardening because you're, you, you love gardening.

• 1:13:32Speaker 03

I find it very gratifying and, but, but now a lot of actors are doing it too. And I'm just like, oh, everyone's doing it.

• 1:13:39Amy Poehler?

  You're an actor.

• 1:13:41Speaker 03

  I am?

• 1:13:41Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:42Speaker 03

  I am?

• 1:13:42Amy Poehler?

We just found out, Academy Award winning actor. You heard it here first.

• 1:13:47Speaker 03

  That's right.

• 1:13:48Amy Poehler?

• 1:13:49Speaker 03

  Yep.

• 1:13:50Amy Poehler?

  Love you, Greta.

• 1:13:50Speaker 03

  I love you so much.

• 1:13:51Amy Poehler?

Thank you so much for doing this.

• 1:13:52Speaker 03

• 1:13:53Amy Poehler?

Of course. Thank you for my beautiful gifts of bounty.

• 1:13:56Speaker 03

And my gorgeous, my gorgeous produce.

• 1:13:59Speaker 03

Yeah, you can't eat that avocado anytime soon.

• 1:14:02Amy Poehler?

I can't lift this basket up with my shoulder.

• 1:14:04Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:14:06Amy Poehler?

Thank you so much, Greta Lee. You are so funny and talented and beautiful. And it's just such a pleasure to get to talk to you. And, um, you know, Greta has done so many things and worked with so many great people. And we talked a little bit about Joan Cusack today. So for this polar plunge, I just want to remind everybody yet again about the genius that is Joan Cusack. I mean, you know her from 16 Candles, from Working Girl, from School of Rock, High Fidelity, Broadcast News. Do yourself a favor, open up a bottle of wine and, and, and watch Broadcast News tonight. Albert Brooks, Holly Hunter, Joan Cusack, just film and comedy at its best.

• 1:14:50Amy Poehler?
