For decades, a shadowy organization called the Lemonati has kept lemon on top and lime in the shadows. Look around, lemon-forward sodas, even lemon-forward songs. We ran the tracks, slowed them down, reversed them, and squeezed out the truth.

• 0:50Speaker 01

That's lemon propaganda right there. But now, 7-Up is fighting back with their new Lime Lemon Soda. Join the 7-Uprising. Flip the sip.

• 1:01Adam Friedland?

Do you think you've fought more guys or [bleep] had sex with more girls? In your life?

• 1:07Speaker 03

Oh god, that's a wild question.

• 1:09Adam Friedland?

I don't know, just think about it. Or are you not a notch-on-the-bed-post kind of guy?

• 1:16Adam Friedland?

  I think just, just...

• 1:17Speaker 03

  I mean, I, I, I, listen. I, we all had fun.

• 1:20Adam Friedland?

  We all had fun.

• 1:22Speaker 03

I did a lot of [bleep] and a lot of fighting.

• 1:25Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:28Adam Friedland?

  So cool.

• 1:28Speaker 03

If I could be honest with you, yes.

• 1:31Adam Friedland?

I wonder, I wonder what the number is. I wonder what the number is on this spreadsheet.

• 1:37Speaker 03

  Oh god.

• 2:08Speaker 04

Hey all, welcome back to the Adam Friedland Show. I'm Adam Friedland. My guest this week is former NHL player Sean Avery. Hockey puck is my favorite think. I like the way they skate up and down the rink. He's here to promote his new book, Summer Skate, which came out in September of 2025. As always, I'm Adam Friedland, signing off. I love Thomas Eisenman.

• 2:31Speaker 03

  No pressure, Friedman.

• 2:33Adam Friedland?

Shut the fuck up. It's Friedland, okay? Anti-Samson. Welcome to the stage. Coming up next, Sean Avery, 13-year veteran of the NHL, actor, model.

• 2:46Speaker 03

  Oh, fuck.

• 2:47Adam Friedland?

  Sex man.

• 2:48Speaker 03

  Jesus.

• 2:53Adam Friedland?

  Well, that's a hot start.

• 2:55Speaker 03

First of all, I'm not, I'm not a model, and I've never modeled.

• 2:59Adam Friedland?

  You're a top model.

• 2:59Speaker 03

  No, I'm not.

• 3:00Adam Friedland?

I modeled once, I modeled once, yeah, for a French bread, the Kupels.

• 3:06Speaker 03

  Oh, I love the Kupels.

• 3:07Adam Friedland?

Yeah, I was like in the store window.

• 3:09Speaker 03

  On Mercer?

• 3:10Adam Friedland?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I took a picture in front of it.

• 3:12Speaker 03

  Of course.

• 3:13Adam Friedland?

Yeah, yeah. I don't know why. I think it was some sort of prank.

• 3:16Speaker 03

  Oh.

• 3:16Adam Friedland?

I don't know. Why did they ask me? Is it casting?

• 3:20Speaker 03

They used regular people, like the Gap.

• 3:21Adam Friedland?

I wouldn't say regular. I'd say, you know, public intellectuals, celebrities. I've been watching too many highlights.

• 3:29Speaker 03

  Really?

• 3:29Adam Friedland?

Yeah, I'm like catching up on NHL from like, I'd say probably 11th grade. And now I'm 38, and now I'm like locked in.

• 3:36Speaker 03

  11th grade.

• 3:37Adam Friedland?

I want to catch our audience up on like, kind of what your profile was, because it's fascinating to me. And if I was good at fighting and sports and ice skating.

• 3:49Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 3:49Adam Friedland?

  I would be you.

• 3:51Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 3:51Adam Friedland?

Tell me if I'm describing this correctly.

• 3:53Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 3:53Adam Friedland?

Your position was basically to wind up kind of the best player on the other team and make him lose his focus and lose his head, right?

• 4:03Speaker 03

  Essentially, yes.

• 4:03Adam Friedland?

Yeah. That's what I found fascinating about it, because like, it's a sport, unlike any other sport, there's an aspect of, of violence, which is be woken out of the league right now. And, but there is this aspect of like, kind of the mental chess game. And in a team sport like that, it's like, you kind of don't see that in other, like, you see a pitching duel maybe, but like, you don't really see someone like you, who's like, a guy in the depth chart. Who you bring out and he's like, he's going to make Sidney Crosby cry.

• 4:37Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 4:37Adam Friedland?

  Basically.

• 4:37Speaker 03

Yeah, I think it's funny. I've never really thought about it like this, but like, think about it as like an organized crime family. So, and I'll use Yeremy Yager as, as an example. He's the godfather. Right? And at some point during a game, the godfather's gonna look down at the end of the bench.

• 5:01Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 5:01Speaker 03

  At me.

• 5:02Adam Friedland?

So it's not coming from Tortorella. It's not coming from the coach?

• 5:05Speaker 03

No, no, no. And, and really, what it, it always came from me because I was uncontrollable.

• 5:10Adam Friedland?

Would you guys pool the, the fine?

• 5:12Speaker 03

  Uh, yeah, sometimes.

• 5:13Adam Friedland?

  That's so sick.

• 5:15Speaker 03

That's, that's illegal for me to tell you that, that we would say actively in the dressing room, like, okay, somebody go and fucking kill Matt Cook.

• 5:24Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 5:24Speaker 03

And the boys will put the money on the board.

• 5:27Adam Friedland?

  He had it coming.

• 5:28Speaker 03

  He did.

• 5:28Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, he had fucking.

• 5:29Speaker 03

You know, he married. This is interesting. In junior, when we're younger.

• 5:33Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 5:34Speaker 03

Uh, like 15 to 20, we play in this, uh, the Canadian Hockey League.

• 5:37Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 5:38Speaker 03

  You move away from home.

• 5:39Adam Friedland?

  You cooked.

• 5:40Speaker 03

You move away from home. I was good.

• 5:43Adam Friedland?

  You were good?

• 5:43Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 5:44Adam Friedland?

  I was watching highlights.

• 5:45Speaker 03

  Oh, really?

• 5:45Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 5:46Speaker 03

You move away from home and you live with a, a local family.

• 5:49Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 5:49Speaker 03

  Matt Cook married.

• 5:52Adam Friedland?

  The mom.

• 5:53Speaker 03

The mom of the family that he moved in with.

• 5:56Adam Friedland?

  Wait, he's the sole mom?

• 5:58Speaker 03

He, well, yeah. Yeah. So, so, all right. Essentially, basically my role was to shift the momentum. If we were going in and playing a team on the road and it was a tough building to play in, usually like, you know, collectively, guys were, like Montreal on a Saturday night is a tough building to play in.

• 6:18Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 6:18Speaker 03

And I always knew that and I would go in and I would basically try and put a fucking giant target on my back by spewing vulgar at everyone that I could from, from warm up.

• 6:31Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 6:32Speaker 03

Till the start of the puck.

• 6:34Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 6:34Speaker 03

Drop. And then, because my idea was the guys are a little, we gotta weather the storm in Montreal, the first five minutes, 10 minutes, they come hard. I gotta make sure that, bring it all on me. Bring it all on me and let everybody be comfortable and I want Yogs to have space and whoever else. So that, and then at some point during the game, maybe we're gonna be in a tight game, maybe we're gonna be losing and we need a little you know what I mean? And then you send me out there and

• 7:08Adam Friedland?

  So sick.

• 7:09Speaker 03

I'm gonna try and change the momentum. I'm gonna hopefully draw a penalty, which is gonna put our team on the power play. Or I'm gonna fucking make somebody go crazy and the goalie's gonna leave the net and whatever.

• 7:22Adam Friedland?

  So your parents were teachers?

• 7:24Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 7:25Adam Friedland?

  So why are you bad?

• 7:27Speaker 03

Uh, so the first time my mom got called by the school and it was in grade one. And I have a five-year-old who's going into kindergarten next year, so I have an idea of what like grade one is now. She got a call from the principal saying, um, so Sean, we have a, we have a deaf kid in Sean's class and he doesn't believe he's deaf. So he's been yelling in his ear all afternoon.

• 7:56Speaker 03

That's early for a grade, for grade one, that's early to kinda go in that hard.

• 8:01Adam Friedland?

It's kind of like, you had a hypothesis and you're doing, it's an experiment, you know?

• 8:06Speaker 03

  Problem solving.

• 8:06Adam Friedland?

And the kid was lying for attention.

• 8:08Speaker 03

  No.

• 8:10Adam Friedland?

But like hockey is like for us, when we think Canada, then we think that's your

• 8:13Speaker 03

  National sport, yes.

• 8:14Adam Friedland?

And, and it is the opposite of what the stereotype is of a Canadian, right? Of like a nice guy, right? Like, and, and it is something that Canada could fuck up America at, right? Until the recent tournament, we almost had your asses.

• 8:32Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 8:32Adam Friedland?

The, what is it? The Triwizard Tournament or whatever.

• 8:35Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, the, uh, Three Nations or the Four Nations Cup, yeah.

• 8:39Adam Friedland?

I feel like that brought hockey back a little bit.

• 8:41Speaker 03

Yeah, I mean, my idea of that was because essentially the Kachuk boys,

• 8:45Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 8:46Speaker 03

whose dad, uh, they call him Big Walt, Keith Kachuk, uh, great American player. But he played with so many Canadians

• 8:55Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 8:55Speaker 03

that I think by default, the boys are almost more Canadian than they are American. But what they're doing is now they're changing the culture of American hockey.

• 9:06Adam Friedland?

So like, what's the hang, right? So you're, like in the MLB, right? You have like MAGA farm boys, and then you have like passionate Aladdin men. And I guess now you have like Japanese guys with gambling debt. But like, you guys have Russians, you have like Scandinavians, and then you have like, also you guys have like French Canadians and then Canadians.

• 9:30Speaker 03

  Which are two different things.

• 9:31Adam Friedland?

Are Americans and Anglo Canadians, is that kind of more of a group? Or is it like in a locker room?

• 9:39Speaker 03

  No, no, no, no, no.

• 9:41Adam Friedland?

  No?

• 9:41Speaker 03

  No, no.

• 9:42Adam Friedland?

You see somebody as American in a locker room?

• 9:44Speaker 03

Yeah, no, well, no, we see guys as Western Leaguers. Because Western Leaguers, they don't like the hard stuff. They'll just drink like 80 beers.

• 9:55Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 9:56Speaker 03

And guys from the Ontario League, they like to mix in, they like to get the fireballs and the... So, it's sort of like a regional thing where, and American guys mostly went to college.

• 10:09Adam Friedland?

Oh, they, yeah, and they get drafted?

• 10:10Speaker 03

And none of us went to college.

• 10:12Adam Friedland?

Yeah. Did you, the last school you went to was like 16 before that?

• 10:15Speaker 03

I think it might even, a little bit earlier, yeah.

• 10:18Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 10:19Speaker 03

  Yeah, 16, yeah.

• 10:20Adam Friedland?

And then you started playing juniors?

• 10:21Speaker 03

And that's when I started playing juniors, and that's, you know, when you move away from home, you move in with this family. Some guys fall in love, some guys, I just...

• 10:31Adam Friedland?

  Some guys fuck the ball.

• 10:32Speaker 03

I just went to work. I shot pucks. I didn't want to go to school. The rink was open. I said, "What do you mean? This is our arena and the ice is there and you're not renting it."

• 10:42Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 10:43Speaker 03

And I, so I think like early on, I was one of the, I was just like, "I'm not, I'm gonna go shoot pucks."

• 10:50Adam Friedland?

  You wanted to work.

• 10:51Speaker 03

  I wanted to work.

• 10:52Adam Friedland?

Yeah. So what are the Russian guys like?

• 10:55Speaker 03

  Russian guys are incredible.

• 10:56Adam Friedland?

  You guys hang with them?

• 10:57Speaker 03

  New money, baby.

• 10:58Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 10:58Speaker 03

  It's so fun.

• 10:59Adam Friedland?

  Louis Vuitton.

• 11:00Speaker 03

  It's so fun, yes.

• 11:02Adam Friedland?

  Ten yuan leather.

• 11:03Speaker 03

And I played with sort of both generations, because when I got to Detroit...

• 11:07Adam Friedland?

  Fedorov.

• 11:08Speaker 03

We had Sergey, we had Fedorov, Larry Onov. We had Dot Suk.

• 11:13Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 11:14Speaker 03

Uh, we had a lot of great Russians. Sergey was first generation and second generation because he played for so long and he kind of, he's the epitome of like American, a Russian coming to America. He's the original Miami Russian, okay? He went to Miami, he falls in love with Anna Kournikova. He goes on that run, but that, that, so Russians, we like Eastern Europeans. We like Swedes because Swedes are the most similar to Canadians.

• 11:45Adam Friedland?

And the Finns don't fuck with each other.

• 11:46Speaker 03

They don't like each other. And the Finns are the worst drinkers ever.

• 11:51Adam Friedland?

What's the, what's the stereotype with the Finns? Are they like, just like monsters?

• 11:56Speaker 03

  Yeah, you're like,

• 11:57Adam Friedland?

  They're dumb monsters?

• 11:57Speaker 03

Look at UC over there. What's he thinking about?

• 12:03Speaker 03

And then he gets drunk and you know everything that he's ever thought in a matter of an hour.

• 12:08Adam Friedland?

And the Swedes are like handsome legends.

• 12:10Speaker 03

  They're just like,

• 12:11Adam Friedland?

  They're good lads.

• 12:12Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 12:12Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 12:13Speaker 03

Yeah, and I think that's why Canadians are drawn to them because they're very similar to us.

• 12:18Adam Friedland?

What about America, dude? We're more like, come on.

• 12:21Speaker 03

  You know, I didn't, I didn't meet a Jew until I came to America.

• 12:26Adam Friedland?

  Right now, until you came?

• 12:30Adam Friedland?

I mean, Montreal is a very Jewish city.

• 12:32Speaker 03

Right, but I grew up in, Toronto has one part. Now, all my closest friends are from there. But growing up, I didn't know, but when I got to Detroit, Michigan, University of Michigan,

• 12:48Adam Friedland?

  Bloomfield Hills.

• 12:48Speaker 03

  Bloomfield Hills, okay?

• 12:51Adam Friedland?

I know all the Jew cities.

• 12:52Speaker 03

  Right, so that's how,

• 12:53Adam Friedland?

  We have a list.

• 12:54Speaker 03

I, I, yeah, yeah. So that's kind of, that was, that was my introduction to that, but as far as the,

• 13:02Adam Friedland?

  Scotty Bowman.

• 13:03Speaker 03

  Scotty.

• 13:04Adam Friedland?

Is he Jewish or not Jewish?

• 13:05Speaker 03

He, he could be. I could see him.

• 13:09Adam Friedland?

  Can we start that rumor?

• 13:11Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 13:12Adam Friedland?

  The legend?

• 13:13Speaker 03

I could see it like he's got that little, he's kind of like.

• 13:17Adam Friedland?

  Hello, boys.

• 13:18Speaker 03

  Yes. Yeah.

• 13:22Adam Friedland?

So you were playing juniors, you cooked, right?

• 13:25Speaker 03

  I was good, yeah.

• 13:26Adam Friedland?

And your profile, was your profile similar to what it, like your game was similar to what it became in the NHL? Or did you emphasize certain elements to make it into the league? Cause you were undrafted, correct?

• 13:35Speaker 03

I was undrafted, so part of the reason was because of how I was acting.

• 13:41Adam Friedland?

  Cause you're a prick.

• 13:42Speaker 03

  Playing, yes.

• 13:42Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 13:43Speaker 03

And, and I still have a little bit of resentment towards Canadian hockey, who, they have their own whole mess that they've been doing some things that they shouldn't have or whatever. Because they kept me off our national teams because

• 13:59Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 14:00Speaker 03

they thought I was a bad teammate.

• 14:02Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 14:02Speaker 03

  And I was just misunderstood.

• 14:04Adam Friedland?

Wouldn't it have felt amazing, like, oh, Canada?

• 14:06Speaker 03

  To put that thing on?

• 14:08Adam Friedland?

  Would you have cried?

• 14:09Speaker 03

  The crest.

• 14:10Adam Friedland?

So you get signed to the wings?

• 14:12Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 14:12Adam Friedland?

Right? In the middle of a dynasty?

• 14:14Speaker 03

  Yep.

• 14:14Adam Friedland?

I mean, that was like a fucking, and you're about to go to Detroit right now?

• 14:18Speaker 03

I'm, I'm, I'm leaving here, going to Detroit for our centennial alumni weekend celebration. I haven't seen some of these guys probably, I haven't seen Dominic Hasek in 15 years.

• 14:30Adam Friedland?

Would you consider him the GOAT?

• 14:33Adam Friedland?

Or your old, your old friend Fatso?

• 14:36Speaker 03

You go Patrick Wa, Brodeur, and I think Hasek. But then like, I could say Terry Sawchuk, but like, I don't even, that was

• 14:48Adam Friedland?

  That's the olden days.

• 14:48Speaker 03

  80 years ago, I, I don't know.

• 14:50Adam Friedland?

From what I understand, it's just a completely different game at this point. The skill level is much higher.

• 14:54Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 14:55Adam Friedland?

  And like,

• 14:56Speaker 03

  It's sick. It's so good.

• 14:58Adam Friedland?

They're so good at, they're so good at ball.

• 15:00Speaker 03

It's, it's a very interesting, the evolution of like the last four years. Well, it's the McDavid kid.

• 15:07Adam Friedland?

  Yeah. Yeah.

• 15:08Speaker 03

  He's

• 15:09Adam Friedland?

  He's nasty.

• 15:09Speaker 03

  McJesus.

• 15:10Adam Friedland?

  McJesus.

• 15:11Speaker 03

  He's so good.

• 15:12Adam Friedland?

Yeah. Well, he's not good at the press like you were.

• 15:15Speaker 03

No, but he's gonna have to be because he's gonna sign with the Rangers in two years.

• 15:19Adam Friedland?

Really? And he's gonna have to start talking shit like you? Are you gonna like, kind of bring him in baby bro style?

• 15:25Speaker 03

You know, I've always thought that that would be the perfect job for me.

• 15:28Adam Friedland?

Should we write for, for McDavid?

• 15:30Speaker 03

  And, and, or just everything?

• 15:32Adam Friedland?

  Yeah. Should we be like?

• 15:34Speaker 03

Everything, what he wears, how he, you know, we gotta help the transition.

• 15:38Adam Friedland?

When you do fashion, I'll do, I'll do bits.

• 15:40Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 15:41Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 15:42Speaker 03

I'm good, I got good bits.

• 15:43Adam Friedland?

Oh no, you're better actually. For a hockey context, you're better. When you're in like a minor league team for, you know, the best team in the world.

• 15:54Speaker 03

  So yeah.

• 15:54Adam Friedland?

How do you work your way up?

• 15:57Speaker 03

Uh, so, okay, Detroit, 2002, I think the greatest hockey team ever on paper.

• 16:05Adam Friedland?

  Probably.

• 16:06Speaker 03

And they actually, we actually won the Stanley Cup. I say we hesitantly because.

• 16:13Adam Friedland?

  They didn't put your name.

• 16:14Speaker 03

I was, I didn't play in the playoffs, but I was on the team during the year and I didn't play, I think I, if I had played two more games during the regular season, I would have had my name on the cup, but whatever.

• 16:25Adam Friedland?

  This weekend, sneaky.

• 16:27Speaker 03

And just, and say, hey, you know.

• 16:28Adam Friedland?

Tape and just write your name.

• 16:30Speaker 03

Well, we rewrite history everywhere else.

• 16:32Adam Friedland?

  I know.

• 16:33Speaker 03

  Right?

• 16:33Adam Friedland?

  Lord, sadly, wouldn't care.

• 16:34Speaker 03

No. So Detroit 2002, I played one years in the, in, one year in the minors in Cincinnati, but I, I'm lucky enough to play for a coach who's now essentially banned from the NHL. This guy, Mike Babcock, was my minor, was my minor coach.

• 16:53Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 16:53Speaker 03

And he's a lunatic. He got kicked off, uh, I love him. He's one of my favorite people of all time. He got fired a couple of years ago before the season started because he made all the guys on the team come in and he said, uh, open your phone books, your, your camera, I want to see all the pictures that you have in your phone. Leave your phone with me and I'll give it back to you.

• 17:16Adam Friedland?

  Is he Joseph Stalin?

• 17:17Speaker 03

And they, and they fired him.

• 17:20Adam Friedland?

  He's running the KGB?

• 17:22Speaker 03

Which, who would, I mean, of all the sports, okay, here's what I'm gonna say. The hockey players would have the most fucked up pictures in their phones. Yeah.

• 17:35Adam Friedland?

What would like, like, what's the, like what?

• 17:37Speaker 03

It would just be so diverse.

• 17:39Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 17:39Speaker 03

You know, it would be like, uh, a hand up a cow's ass.

• 17:44Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 17:44Speaker 03

Like actually working and milking the cows in Saskatchewan. And then it might be somebody having, he might have a hand in his ass. I mean, hockey players are wild.

• 17:58Speaker 03

  They are the wildest.

• 18:01Adam Friedland?

I like the parallel, the parallel representation.

• 18:04Speaker 03

Why would you want to see that?

• 18:05Adam Friedland?

So locker room talk, how many micros have you seen in NHL locker room?

• 18:12Speaker 03

Oh god, so, so, I mean, it just wore off, like it's, uh, but I, I know who the big-

• 18:17Adam Friedland?

Have you seen micros in, in a professional sports league, uh-

• 18:22Speaker 03

  Yeah, there's a couple.

• 18:23Adam Friedland?

  Dude, good for them.

• 18:24Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 18:25Adam Friedland?

  Honestly.

• 18:25Speaker 03

  What's he gonna do?

• 18:26Adam Friedland?

  They busted their fucking asses.

• 18:28Speaker 03

  Usually-

• 18:28Adam Friedland?

Give it up for them, actually. Give it up for them.

• 18:31Speaker 03

  Yeah. Slovakians.

• 18:34Adam Friedland?

  Slovakians. Teeny tiny.

• 18:37Speaker 03

  Teeny tiny.

• 18:38Adam Friedland?

Dude, that's what they say. That's what they say. Really?

• 18:42Speaker 03

  No, yeah.

• 18:42Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, really?

• 18:43Speaker 03

Yeah. You would walk into the sauna or the steam room after practice and my left winger would be shaving, uh, my right winger's back.

• 18:57Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 18:58Speaker 03

So, you, you know, it just-

• 19:00Adam Friedland?

  That's the love of brotherhood.

• 19:01Speaker 03

Yeah. Yes. Yeah. And, and it just kinda wears off after a certain amount of time.

• 19:08Adam Friedland?

Did you get rookie treatment? Like, who, and did you have a vet? Like, how did those guys like who were like literally on technically the best hockey team of all time?

• 19:17Speaker 03

  I learned from the best.

• 19:18Adam Friedland?

How did they, how did they treat you?

• 19:19Speaker 03

I learned from like the OGs. A guy like Brendan Shanahan told me a couple of things. He said, "Never take a yellow taxi and always have more than $400 in your po- in your pocket."

• 19:30Adam Friedland?

  Was he a pimp?

• 19:31Speaker 03

  No, just, just ready.

• 19:32Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, he's just ready.

• 19:33Speaker 03

And also, you know, the appearance of like-

• 19:36Adam Friedland?

  It sounds cool, though.

• 19:37Speaker 03

You don't take a yellow taxi.

• 19:38Adam Friedland?

  You don't take it?

• 19:39Speaker 03

  No.

• 19:40Adam Friedland?

  Sounds about broke. Yeah.

• 19:41Speaker 03

And, and it could sound cool, but we're going the other way. We're just going, we're going up here. Uh, a guy like Chris Chelios, I'll tell this story.

• 19:53Speaker 03

What a legend. The first time I ever went out with Chelly and I was staying with him, I think during training camp. And we went out and it was Detroit. You know, there's not that much to do.

• 20:05Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 20:06Speaker 03

Anyways, I think we were pulling onto his street and it was like 2:30, 2:30 AM. And he pulls onto the street and then he just pulls the car over to the side of the road. He used to drive like a 68 Cadillac, like an old school that sometimes wouldn't start. Yeah, it's so long.

• 20:25Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 20:25Speaker 03

So he puts it in park and when you crank those seats back, it's like Delta 1. You're, you're, you like Delta?

• 20:32Adam Friedland?

  Lay flat.

• 20:33Speaker 03

  Yeah, lay flat.

• 20:34Adam Friedland?

Dude, of course I'm a Delta boy.

• 20:35Speaker 03

And I looked over, I was like, I didn't know what was going on. And he said, listen, life is all about setting precedents, okay? If I go home now before 3 AM,

• 20:51Speaker 03

the wife's gonna think something's going on.

• 20:54Adam Friedland?

  Uh huh.

• 20:55Speaker 03

If I come home after 3 AM, like I always do, there's no questions asked. You don't disrupt the system.

• 21:03Adam Friedland?

  But, but...

• 21:04Speaker 03

So isn't that a, isn't that an, like, that's the level of, of commitment?

• 21:10Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 21:11Speaker 03

  Is off the charts.

• 21:13Adam Friedland?

Think that he's getting pussy? I don't understand.

• 21:15Speaker 03

No, no, no, it wasn't about that. It wasn't, no, no, no, it was about,

• 21:19Adam Friedland?

  I'm sorry.

• 21:19Speaker 03

It was about, uh, wives hassle husbands.

• 21:24Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 21:24Speaker 03

Like, what the hell are you doing out?

• 21:26Adam Friedland?

  Right.

• 21:27Speaker 03

And then you come home earlier, you've now set the precedent back.

• 21:31Adam Friedland?

  You could do that?

• 21:32Speaker 03

Like, you should be home earlier. If you came home at 2:30 instead of 3, like you've been doing for...

• 21:38Adam Friedland?

  And that's what she gets.

• 21:39Speaker 03

Years. So that was sort of, I'm telling that because in all the different situations, different archetypes of guys on that team, they all had their own high level operation that they were running.

• 21:53Adam Friedland?

What, are, are goalies like, they're weird?

• 21:55Speaker 03

  Crazy, so crazy.

• 21:57Adam Friedland?

Like, they're like, they're like, baseball pitchers are like sociopaths.

• 22:01Speaker 03

Break down the, break down the position. So they wake up in the morning.

• 22:05Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 22:05Speaker 03

  Right? Practice is at 10:30.

• 22:09Speaker 03

By ten forty, they've probably had seven hundred ho- hockey pucks shot off of them.

• 22:17Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 22:18Speaker 03

  Off of their body.

• 22:19Adam Friedland?

  Every day for practice.

• 22:19Speaker 03

Every day, every day, every game, twice a day on game days.

• 22:24Adam Friedland?

  They're like masochists.

• 22:26Speaker 03

  They're, yeah, maybe.

• 22:27Adam Friedland?

  They're weird.

• 22:28Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 22:28Adam Friedland?

And they're, are they superstitious too, or?

• 22:30Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah, yeah.

• 22:32Adam Friedland?

They're like weird, yeah, they're weirdos.

• 22:33Speaker 03

Left skate on, don't touch that, don't walk through that door, uh, don't look at that person. I put sour cream on my spaghetti, all kinds of weird shit. Yeah, sour, sour cream and ketchup.

• 22:51Adam Friedland?

From what I understand, you, you bounced around, you were in LA.

• 22:54Speaker 03

  I didn't bounce around.

• 22:55Adam Friedland?

Well, you were, you were the, you were red wings.

• 22:57Speaker 03

I played on three fucking teams.

• 22:58Adam Friedland?

  Four.

• 23:00Speaker 03

  Dallas doesn't count.

• 23:02Adam Friedland?

That was a fun one. That was a little detour. That was a little detour.

• 23:06Speaker 03

  Little detour, yes.

• 23:07Adam Friedland?

You have to throw out the first pitch at the, at the Rangers game.

• 23:09Speaker 03

  At a Rangers game.

• 23:10Adam Friedland?

  I saw that.

• 23:11Speaker 03

  Yep.

• 23:11Adam Friedland?

And they all applauded, they're like, this is, this is gonna work out. This is gonna be a good.

• 23:15Speaker 03

  And by the way.

• 23:16Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 23:16Speaker 03

Brett Hall, who I'm gonna see this weekend.

• 23:18Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 23:19Speaker 03

  I mean, the greatest.

• 23:21Adam Friedland?

  You guys live together, right?

• 23:22Speaker 03

Yeah, but he was the GM in Dallas, that's why I went.

• 23:25Adam Friedland?

  Did he cancel your contract?

• 23:27Speaker 03

Well, no, he, well, essentially, yes, but, but his boss did.

• 23:32Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 23:32Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 23:33Adam Friedland?

From what I understand, like, you got to New York and there's like, you found a home in the NHL?

• 23:38Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 23:39Adam Friedland?

And, uh, but like, the, the interesting thing about you is like, the way you talk about moving to New York is like, like fucking Carrie Bradshaw. Like.

• 23:47Speaker 03

I, it, it was, I was the, yeah, the sex in the city, you know.

• 23:51Adam Friedland?

You like had a Carrie moment.

• 23:53Speaker 03

  Hold on a second.

• 23:54Adam Friedland?

  What's up?

• 23:56Speaker 03

Hold on a second, I don't even know if you know this, has anyone ever walked off set while they were doing?

• 24:01Adam Friedland?

  Was that a gun?

• 24:02Speaker 03

No, no. You know that I, that I've written a, a romance novel, that's a bestselling hockey romance novel right now, and.

• 24:11Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 24:11Speaker 03

Yeah, we're bidding, you know, we're gonna option, this thing's so fucking hot, this is about a New York Ranger rookie, who spends the summer in the Hamptons with two of his, uh, former college teammates. They fucked their way through the entire Hamptons.

• 24:26Adam Friedland?

And this is hardcore sex in there?

• 24:28Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 24:28Adam Friedland?

Oh, nice, dude. Can I have this?

• 24:30Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 24:32Speaker 03

  You didn't know that I-

• 24:34Adam Friedland?

Do you wanna read a little? Do you wanna read, like, read some, read some of the steamiest?

• 24:39Speaker 03

I'll read you the, no, you know what I'll do?

• 24:41Adam Friedland?

  You're literally Carrie.

• 24:42Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 24:43Adam Friedland?

You're reading of, you're writing fucking books.

• 24:45Speaker 03

Yeah, here's the first chapter of my, of my, it's three pages.

• 24:49Adam Friedland?

Oh my god, you have a pillow on?

• 24:50Speaker 03

  Of my romance novel.

• 24:51Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, okay.

• 24:52Speaker 03

Durham, New Hampshire, two years ago. It's a snowy night in a town that is all activity and cheer, even after a loss. The cobblestone streets are blanketed in white and lined with twinkling Christmas trees. I have my red-cheeked girlfriend under my arm as we walk down the street, the tails of her scarf flying in the icy wind. We walk past a bar with its door open and amateur band is playing "Take Me Home, Country Roads."

• 25:16Adam Friedland?

  Love that song.

• 25:17Speaker 03

It's 11:30 on a Saturday night and we're headed back to my apartment off-campus. She's got my jacket on. We turn onto a street that's quiet. We hear only the sound of our boots on the slated pavement, the crunch of salt under our feet. Three big guys with beards walk towards us. Townies.

• 25:36Adam Friedland?

  Oh no.

• 25:37Speaker 03

They're drunk. One of them looks at her and asks, "How does it feel to be with the biggest bitch on campus?" Clearly, they watched me take that bad penalty at the end of the game. It cost my team the win, and while I can't erase the past, I can predict the future. I know exactly what's about to happen. Everything goes into slow motion. I turn to my girlfriend, very calmly, and say, "Don't ask any questions, just turn around and walk home, okay? Right now, go." I am clear, I am strategic. This is when I do my best computing in the eye of the storm. If I could choose to live in this space, I would. It's where I feel comfortable, serviceable on the team. This is my role. I cause chaos, for distraction, for intimidation, for the win.

• 26:22Speaker 03

I've done it since I was a kid. Who did you just call a bitch, I say?

• 26:27Adam Friedland?

  Ooh.

• 26:27Speaker 03

Before he can answer, I smack one guy, open hand slap him across the jaw, he's down. I hit the second guy on the side of his head, on his ear, before his hands even come out of his pockets. He's down. The third guy is six feet away, coming toward me, I take two hard steps and bury my shoulder into his belly button, wrap my arms around his legs and pick him up off the ground, slam his head off the curb, bounce his head right off the concrete, he's out cold, bleeding from the ears. I sit down on the curb, I have blood on my hands, but they aren't shaking. At least there were three, it's easier to sell. I take out my phone, put my hand on one guy's chest to see if he's still breathing.

• 27:07Speaker 03

I call the cops. Hi, my name is Carter Hughes, I play hockey for the University of New Hampshire. I just got attacked by three men on the corner of Summer Street in Maine. One of the guys is hurt badly, send an ambulance and the police, I'll stick around until you get here.

• 27:23Adam Friedland?

  Wow, that's sexy, that's, that's very romantic.

• 27:28Speaker 03

  And then the-

• 27:29Adam Friedland?

I haven't read, I haven't read a book since Harry Potter 8, I think I'm gonna try to go back in on books.

• 27:34Speaker 03

And can I tell you, it's, it's, it's a dual perspective, so your girlfriend-

• 27:39Adam Friedland?

Are you selling this right now?

• 27:40Speaker 03

Your girlfriend can read it, because they start fucking a lot in the book.

• 27:44Adam Friedland?

She can read. Oh, she can, yeah, she can.

• 27:47Speaker 03

Anyways, it's, it's, we have a female protagonist and a male, so the chapters bounce back and forth between Carter and his love interest.

• 27:56Adam Friedland?

  I like that narrative device.

• 27:58Speaker 03

  Yes, yeah.

• 27:59Adam Friedland?

  It's like Rashomon.

• 28:02Adam Friedland?

  Uh, wait.

• 28:02Speaker 03

  That was fun, right?

• 28:03Adam Friedland?

  Ew, I love, I'm, I'm like hooked.

• 28:05Speaker 03

Can we put it on the table, though?

• 28:07Adam Friedland?

Yeah, let's put it on the table.

• 28:09Speaker 03

  Well, just, oh, yeah.

• 28:11Adam Friedland?

  It's fine.

• 28:11Speaker 03

  Great.

• 28:12Adam Friedland?

Um, so what, what's it like to fight, you, so you guys are just wear, you're wearing ice skates and you know, you know how to fight wearing ice skates, like?

• 28:20Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 28:21Adam Friedland?

What a weird thing, what a weird sport. It's a, it's, it's the only sport where there's like-

• 28:28Speaker 03

  You're allowed.

• 28:28Adam Friedland?

There's an aspect of fighting, but you're also on ice skates.

• 28:32Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 28:33Adam Friedland?

Did you guys fight, like, were, were the figure skating guys and the, and the hockey guys, was that like beef grown up in the ring?

• 28:39Speaker 03

You know what's so funny? There's a, an old wives' tale, Elvis Stojko was a Canadian Olympian figure skater. I think he was the first man to do five-

• 28:49Adam Friedland?

  The triple?

• 28:50Speaker 03

  No, quad.

• 28:51Adam Friedland?

  A quad, yeah, yeah.

• 28:52Speaker 03

  A quad.

• 28:53Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 28:54Speaker 03

I have been told that he roundhouse kicked Eric Lindros in a bar outside of Toronto in the Muskogas in the summer.

• 29:05Adam Friedland?

  It was a good question.

• 29:07Speaker 03

Okay, yeah, so that to me, I don't know, that's.

• 29:12Adam Friedland?

  That's so sick.

• 29:13Speaker 03

  Yeah, be careful.

• 29:13Adam Friedland?

Cause they're actually like great athletes.

• 29:15Speaker 03

  Oh dude, they're.

• 29:16Adam Friedland?

They're just wearing sequins. Yeah, that's why it's a distraction.

• 29:19Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 29:21Adam Friedland?

  And also John Wick. Yeah.

• 29:22Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 29:23Adam Friedland?

Wait, so, so like, what's your, like, how many fights in your life have you think, what's your body count of fights?

• 29:30Speaker 03

So, God, man, dude, I fought so many fucking delivery guys in New York City.

• 29:34Adam Friedland?

  I know, it's not that.

• 29:35Speaker 03

  Am I adding, is that?

• 29:36Adam Friedland?

You get really mad at them on your Instagram.

• 29:38Speaker 03

I used to. I used to. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 29:41Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, you're nice.

• 29:42Speaker 03

Lots of fights. Uh, when I was 12, I played in Nova Scotia for a few years. My dad got transferred. He worked for Sears, R I P Sears.

• 29:53Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 29:56Speaker 03

And we had a tournament on Prince Edward Island. You take the ferry. Anyways, we won the tournament and we played against another team from Nova Scotia. When we took the ferry back from P E I, they had to put me up in the captain's quarters of the ferry because the parents on the other team wanted to kill me.

• 30:15Adam Friedland?

  Parents?

• 30:16Speaker 03

The, the parents of the players of the other team. We were 12.

• 30:20Adam Friedland?

So you were a little fucking.

• 30:21Speaker 03

  I was bad.

• 30:22Adam Friedland?

  You're a bad boy.

• 30:23Speaker 03

  Bad.

• 30:23Adam Friedland?

Did your mom try to make you be good?

• 30:26Speaker 03

You know, I once saw her at the bay, you know, the, it's our, it's our, uh, the bay, you know, the blankets, the three stripes, the Canadian heritage, the bay.

• 30:40Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 30:40Speaker 03

She once spent four hours in a bay until they took her return. She just wouldn't leave.

• 30:48Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 30:49Speaker 03

  She just stayed there.

• 30:50Adam Friedland?

Oh, so you got your shit from her.

• 30:51Speaker 03

And that was a, was one of those like traumatory moments maybe, or, or for the better.

• 30:58Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 30:58Speaker 03

And that was when I knew, yeah, so then you just, you dig in.

• 31:02Adam Friedland?

You saw her dealing with customer service?

• 31:04Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 31:04Adam Friedland?

  Is that what you're saying?

• 31:05Speaker 03

Yeah, she was trying to return something. They, they were refusing to take it. And she said to them, I will never leave.

• 31:11Adam Friedland?

Yeah. Are you sure you're not Jewish?

• 31:15Speaker 03

I am, I am. You can hire me for a bat mitzvahs.

• 31:18Adam Friedland?

Wait, do you think, do you think you fought more guys or fucked, had sex with more girls? In your life?

• 31:26Speaker 03

Oh god, that's a wild question.

• 31:28Adam Friedland?

I don't know, just think about it. Or are you not a notch, are you not a notch on the bedpost kinda guy?

• 31:35Adam Friedland?

  I think just, just-

• 31:36Speaker 03

I mean, I, I, listen, I, we all had fun.

• 31:39Adam Friedland?

  We all had fun.

• 31:40Speaker 03

I did a lot of fucking and a lot of fighting.

• 31:44Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 31:46Adam Friedland?

  So cool.

• 31:47Speaker 03

If I could be honest with you, yes.

• 31:49Adam Friedland?

Yeah. I wonder, I wonder what the number is.

• 31:54Adam Friedland?

I wonder what the number is on this spreadsheet.

• 31:56Speaker 03

  Oh god.

• 31:57Adam Friedland?

  You should, you should-

• 31:58Speaker 03

  Oh god.

• 32:00Adam Friedland?

Like, is it like, is it nice to fight?

• 32:04Speaker 03

You know what's so interesting is that-

• 32:06Adam Friedland?

  You like, like it?

• 32:07Speaker 03

I became, I'm now- Yeah, yeah.

• 32:11Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 32:12Speaker 03

But, I'm now a martial artist. I took up jujitsu three years ago, four years ago maybe. And now, I don't wanna fight, ever. Because if you get too close to me and, and something pops off, I, I wanna embrace you and choke, and I wanna choke the air out of you.

• 32:33Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 32:33Speaker 03

Whereas, before I wanted to like, use my fists and that was, that was, I was a man trying to find a way to cure his urges.

• 32:46Adam Friedland?

You, you had, you had just a, you had a guy inside of you.

• 32:49Speaker 03

  Yeah, and-

• 32:50Adam Friedland?

You had a, you had the-

• 32:51Speaker 03

And the problem is, you get rewarded for it.

• 32:53Adam Friedland?

  In your game.

• 32:54Speaker 03

  In our game.

• 32:55Adam Friedland?

  So cool.

• 32:56Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 32:56Adam Friedland?

  And the crowd goes nuts.

• 32:58Speaker 03

And you, and then you feel like god.

• 33:00Adam Friedland?

It's so cool when they fight each other.

• 33:01Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 33:02Adam Friedland?

It's so cool. And then now they're woking it out of the league.

• 33:05Speaker 03

  They're still, they're still fighting.

• 33:06Adam Friedland?

We gotta let the boys fight.

• 33:07Speaker 03

  It's coming back.

• 33:08Adam Friedland?

Is, what's more dangerous like, for a player? It's, dirty hits have to be more dangerous than a, than a mono e mono.

• 33:15Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, absolutely.

• 33:17Adam Friedland?

You did a move, which I, this is why I'm like, we're, we're kinda the same guy. Which is like, the, in, in, in, the, the notion is, if a man squares up and you have to, you have to accept the challenge.

• 33:29Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 33:30Adam Friedland?

But you did the move, cause you were a wind-up guy, where you'd be like, what? You know, you'd be in a guy's ear and be like, "You fucking pussy, you fucking bitch." And then, and then he'd like lose it, and then you'd be like, "What, what? I didn't, what did I do?" You know? Which is in front of an entire stadium, just like the security in, inside of yourself to be able to be like, um, to be able, it's, it's so Israel of you. It's just like, it's so like, it's so much.

• 33:55Speaker 03

  Benny?

• 33:56Adam Friedland?

I mean, no, but I mean, just like-

• 33:57Speaker 03

  I call him Benny.

• 33:58Adam Friedland?

For you to, for you to like-

• 34:00Speaker 03

  Net Nahu.

• 34:01Adam Friedland?

  Oh, Net Nanu.

• 34:02Speaker 03

  I call him Benny.

• 34:03Adam Friedland?

Oh, I call him, I call him a lot of names.

• 34:05Speaker 05

• 36:09Adam Friedland?

And this, let's go back to the first question.

• 36:11Speaker 03

I said terrible shit. I did research.

• 36:13Adam Friedland?

You did, that's what I was gonna say. Did you have compromise on guys?

• 36:17Speaker 03

Yes, yes. I had a dossier.

• 36:19Adam Friedland?

What depths did you go to to like find out?

• 36:21Speaker 03

  Anywhere.

• 36:22Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 36:22Speaker 03

  Anywhere.

• 36:23Adam Friedland?

  You were like Roy Cohn.

• 36:24Speaker 03

  I was, I, God love, R.I.P. Roy.

• 36:28Adam Friedland?

One of the most insane American figures.

• 36:32Speaker 03

  What a man, American, yes.

• 36:33Adam Friedland?

  American. Not like you.

• 36:36Adam Friedland?

What a fucking, come on, bro.

• 36:38Speaker 03

  By the way.

• 36:38Adam Friedland?

My costume is not a costume.

• 36:39Speaker 03

  By the way.

• 36:40Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 36:41Speaker 03

This is that I wear. I only wear it, yeah.

• 36:43Adam Friedland?

  You converted to it?

• 36:44Speaker 03

Yeah, because Canada lost their identity. I don't even wanna talk about Canada.

• 36:47Adam Friedland?

We don't, that's not even fucking talk, yeah.

• 36:49Speaker 03

Anyways, yes, I did my research, okay? So I would line up with so and so.

• 36:56Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 36:57Speaker 03

Who, you know, I played junior against him. We're the same age, okay? So we've been playing against each other since we were 12.

• 37:04Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 37:04Speaker 03

And his sister Sarah works at the KEG in Toronto. And I know that two Saturdays ago.

• 37:13Adam Friedland?

  She got double teamed.

• 37:15Speaker 03

She didn't get double teamed, but you know, she took down possibly the captain of the Montreal Canadiens.

• 37:22Adam Friedland?

  Okay.

• 37:23Speaker 03

  All right?

• 37:23Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 37:24Speaker 03

And I know that because I've got feelers out. I got people and everyone wants to provide information and, and share information.

• 37:32Adam Friedland?

So you got like a secret police?

• 37:33Speaker 03

  I had a fucking dossier.

• 37:34Adam Friedland?

He was Stalin, basically. You were like, you did have like a KGB working for you.

• 37:39Speaker 03

What was I gonna do? I mean, if you're gonna do that job, then like be the best at it and be prepared.

• 37:45Adam Friedland?

Do you think because you were undersized, you were conceived to be undersized, that this was like a marginal advantage that you could like exploit and like have a career for 13 years in the, like a

• 37:55Speaker 03

Absolutely. It was a survival skill. It was also scarring from being the smallest on my team since I was a kid.

• 38:04Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 38:05Speaker 03

You know, cuz. Standing beside you, you might, people might go, oh, he's pretty, what a big guy.

• 38:11Adam Friedland?

Five ten is good. We're the same height dude, I look the same birthday.

• 38:15Speaker 03

I know, yeah, that's true. But when I was playing, it was a big game and guys were, I mean, I took a video with Yerem.

• 38:21Adam Friedland?

  It's not as big anymore.

• 38:22Speaker 03

  It's, no, it's not.

• 38:24Adam Friedland?

  I've heard that, yeah.

• 38:25Speaker 03

It's not as big. But like, guys were six, the guys were like, you know, huge. Sixty pounds, seventy pounds, like I, Yerem Yager, I saw him for the first time, ten years. Yogs would just, he's such a big man, he would crush me.

• 38:42Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 38:42Speaker 03

  So.

• 38:43Adam Friedland?

How do you fight a guy that big? A bigger guy?

• 38:46Speaker 03

Cause that, fighting, fighting's a different mechanism, cause it's all about levers and, and pushing and pulling. So if you know and understand, like.

• 38:56Adam Friedland?

How do you fight in general? Yeah.

• 38:57Speaker 03

I fought to not get hit. I fought to not get hit, to make it, to sell the fight, to not hurt my hand and to make sure that I landed on top of that fucking guy.

• 39:09Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 39:09Speaker 03

So that if we were on the road, the building went quiet. And now I've just neutralized one of their.

• 39:17Adam Friedland?

  There's no energy.

• 39:18Speaker 03

There's no energy. And if we're at home, the place goes fucking crazy.

• 39:23Adam Friedland?

And you're a legend in the Garden.

• 39:25Speaker 03

  Pretty good.

• 39:26Adam Friedland?

I mean, like they, your profile of player, I would imagine that that just amps the fucking stadium up like, like to a thousand.

• 39:34Speaker 03

Yeah, especially in New York, like, you know, these, you know, New Yorkers, they used to be hard, hardened people.

• 39:42Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 39:42Speaker 03

You know, blue collar. It, it, well, it, it feels like it's coming back, it's about, I think.

• 39:48Adam Friedland?

  Us kinda guys.

• 39:49Speaker 03

I, yeah, right, doing shit, working. So, in New York, the fans appreciated it. I played in LA and like, they didn't like me in LA.

• 39:58Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 39:59Speaker 03

The fans, like, I have more people come up to me in LA that go, I didn't like you, I, I, I, you were a king, I didn't like you as the king, you took too many bad penalties.

• 40:09Adam Friedland?

  You got some bad press.

• 40:12Speaker 03

  In LA, yeah.

• 40:13Adam Friedland?

  You got bullying.

• 40:15Speaker 03

Oh, oh, oh, with, oh, god.

• 40:17Adam Friedland?

Dustin, you made fun of your, your teammate's lisp.

• 40:19Speaker 03

  I guess that's.

• 40:22Adam Friedland?

  What a real jerk.

• 40:23Speaker 03

  Whoa. I've heard that that.

• 40:28Speaker 03

  You know, I concede.

• 40:29Adam Friedland?

  Post-league?

• 40:30Speaker 03

  Maybe I did.

• 40:31Adam Friedland?

Did you make amends with certain people? Like, were you like, "I was a fucking dickhead to you"?

• 40:35Speaker 03

Uh, definitely. What do you mean? In time that I switched teams, I had to.

• 40:41Adam Friedland?

  But that's political.

• 40:44Speaker 03

  You wanna talk about awkward?

• 40:45Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 40:46Speaker 03

You know, get traded from the rain to, from LA to New York.

• 40:50Adam Friedland?

And you've said despicable things to some of these guys.

• 40:52Speaker 03

Bad things to some of the guys.

• 40:53Adam Friedland?

Terrible guys, but they realize, they realize.

• 40:55Speaker 03

Yeah, you gotta have an awkward sidebar.

• 40:57Adam Friedland?

They're like, "He's our guy now."

• 40:59Speaker 03

  Wow.

• 41:00Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 41:00Speaker 03

Yeah. I feel like you could handle that awkwardness.

• 41:04Adam Friedland?

  I, it's...

• 41:04Speaker 03

  You go in and...

• 41:05Adam Friedland?

It's the only way I've been able to survive. And I, I think like, the other thing is this, is like, going back to the original question of you being the smartest guy.

• 41:12Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 41:12Adam Friedland?

Like, you've been around these guys since you were eight, probably?

• 41:15Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 41:16Adam Friedland?

  You know their psychology, right?

• 41:17Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 41:18Adam Friedland?

And like, for me getting funny, it was also just, I could confuse bros.

• 41:23Speaker 03

  Uh huh.

• 41:23Adam Friedland?

To the point where some of my friends even kinda realized I was making fun of them.

• 41:26Speaker 03

  Right.

• 41:26Adam Friedland?

But it wouldn't escalate to them seeing red.

• 41:28Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 41:29Adam Friedland?

  Right?

• 41:29Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 41:29Adam Friedland?

I would, I would do it the opposite, where they'd just be like, walking away, they'd be like, "What the fuck did he say? Yeah."

• 41:34Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 41:35Adam Friedland?

That was like, uh, my mechanism. So it's just like, two sides of the same coin.

• 41:38Speaker 03

The mechanics of, of, of what we do are the same.

• 41:42Adam Friedland?

Who's the dumbest guy? Like, are they, like...

• 41:45Speaker 03

  Donald Brashear.

• 41:46Adam Friedland?

  Don...

• 41:47Speaker 03

And, and, and you know, like...

• 41:50Adam Friedland?

Martin Brashear? From the Michael Jackson documentary?

• 41:53Speaker 03

Donald Brashear, he had a great dane, or some sort of giant dog, and he used to shower with it at the arena.

• 42:01Adam Friedland?

  Yeah. At the arena?

• 42:03Speaker 03

Yeah. Like, and hockey players, we don't have, our showers... Yeah, we don't, hockey players have this weird culture, we don't have individual stalls.

• 42:12Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, who cares?

• 42:13Speaker 03

  It's one big shower.

• 42:15Adam Friedland?

  Family, dude.

• 42:15Speaker 03

Yeah. And I wa, and he was in there showering with his dog. Uh, whatever. I don't like him. For sure, it was not cool.

• 42:24Adam Friedland?

Who do you still have smoke with? Do you, is there a guy that you're like, fuck that guy?

• 42:28Speaker 03

There's a guy named Matthew Barnaby who actually played for the Rangers.

• 42:31Adam Friedland?

Oh shit, I remember that guy.

• 42:33Speaker 03

And Barnaby was, I mean, I love Matthew Barnaby as a player. Matthew Barnaby now on, on, on X, uh, he doesn't even use Instagram, which is like such a boomer move. He's only an X guy.

• 42:47Adam Friedland?

  Uh huh.

• 42:47Speaker 03

Could be a cool move, maybe, actually.

• 42:49Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 42:49Speaker 03

Could be the move is a great Instagram account, by the way.

• 42:52Adam Friedland?

What is could be the move?

• 42:53Speaker 03

  It's could be the move.

• 42:54Adam Friedland?

  What is it?

• 42:55Speaker 03

Could be the move is during the World Series, because you're a team player, you wear your batting glove to work.

• 43:02Adam Friedland?

  Oh shit, for your boys?

• 43:04Speaker 03

For the boys, could be the move.

• 43:05Adam Friedland?

And then you send it to them?

• 43:06Speaker 03

And, and then everybody does it.

• 43:08Adam Friedland?

  And everyone does it?

• 43:09Speaker 03

  Yeah, could be the move.

• 43:10Adam Friedland?

Could be the move. I got into, I, I lost 200 million dollars in gambling for Shohei.

• 43:15Speaker 03

  Oh, oh, you're the guy?

• 43:17Adam Friedland?

I'm, I'm the bag man. No, I'm not the translator.

• 43:20Speaker 03

No, you kinda could look like him.

• 43:21Adam Friedland?

  I, do I look Japanese?

• 43:23Speaker 03

If we shaved your head and, and...

• 43:25Adam Friedland?

That's respect, Aru, dude. That's respect. Wait, so like, you, obviously you had compromised, you knew the things that would trigger them, but like, you knew that they're also bros, like, was there an aspect of the fact that you're interning at Vogue? You were like, kind of a dandy, off, off ice?

• 43:41Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 43:41Adam Friedland?

Was there an aspect where you like, there was an entrenched, maybe like, I'm getting chirped by like a fucking like, what, this guy is like a, he's, he's a fancy boy?

• 43:51Speaker 03

Yeah, I was like, uh, there's a great clip of Wayne Simmons, who was a great player. He was a black hockey player.

• 43:59Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 44:00Speaker 03

  Not many.

• 44:01Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 44:01Speaker 03

There's an incredible clip of him, he's on the Philadelphia bench and I'm in the penalty box and he screams and you can see it. He calls me a faggot. He screams.

• 44:11Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 44:12Speaker 03

So, I did intern at Vogue.

• 44:14Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 44:14Speaker 03

And I did it because I've always been curious, but I also think, subconsciously and now, you know, being able to analyze like, your life.

• 44:25Adam Friedland?

  You were fucking with.

• 44:25Speaker 03

  I was fucking with.

• 44:26Adam Friedland?

  You were fucking with.

• 44:27Speaker 03

I was the troll. I was the alt.

• 44:29Adam Friedland?

  You're a genius.

• 44:30Speaker 03

I was so deep in the troll game.

• 44:32Adam Friedland?

Cause there is amongst pros like an entrenched homophobe and you were also.

• 44:36Speaker 03

Oh entrenched. No, I mean, no, yeah.

• 44:38Adam Friedland?

Yeah, you were early. You were like, uh, well ahead of the curve and you like advocated for gay rights like in the league.

• 44:43Speaker 03

I was the first professional athlete to.

• 44:46Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 44:46Speaker 03

On the record, yeah. Yeah. In, in my Ranger jersey, which is credit to, to Jim Dolan.

• 44:52Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 44:52Speaker 03

Yeah. Oh, oh, by the way, can I tell you something?

• 44:57Speaker 03

I, I, uh, do jujitsu at Clockwork Jujitsu in Soho. You should start doing it. A man that, that can't grapple is.

• 45:03Adam Friedland?

You can't like, you, like, you're late to late 30s, you learn how to fight?

• 45:08Speaker 03

Absolutely. Right now, I could turn you into a, they could turn you into a fucking.

• 45:13Adam Friedland?

  Machine.

• 45:13Speaker 03

  Machine.

• 45:14Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 45:14Speaker 03

  An assassin.

• 45:16Adam Friedland?

Would I fight like girls at first? I mean, like.

• 45:18Speaker 03

  You, you roll with girls.

• 45:20Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 45:20Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 45:21Adam Friedland?

  You ever pop one?

• 45:22Speaker 03

  No.

• 45:22Adam Friedland?

  No.

• 45:23Speaker 03

No, but you roll with girls.

• 45:24Adam Friedland?

But what if I lose to a girl in front of like you in the NHL?

• 45:27Speaker 03

  That's the point.

• 45:28Adam Friedland?

  It's embarrassing.

• 45:29Speaker 03

That's the point. It's an ego killer. But what were we talking about?

• 45:32Adam Friedland?

Uh, you do jujitsu at Clockwork, uh, Jujitsu?

• 45:35Speaker 03

No, no, I know, but I was going into it for some reason.

• 45:38Adam Friedland?

  We both are idiots.

• 45:39Speaker 03

We were talking about, uh, Dolan.

• 45:42Adam Friedland?

  You don't.

• 45:42Speaker 03

You know, here, here, here's what's funny.

• 45:44Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 45:44Speaker 03

And I will say this right now because, uh, Dan Carcello, who played for the Rangers, played for Philly, won a Stanley Cup in Chicago. He's now one of the leaders in, uh, psilocybin therapy.

• 46:01Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 46:02Speaker 03

Okay? I have CTE. There's no question I have CTE because.

• 46:06Adam Friedland?

  I was gonna ask.

• 46:07Speaker 03

My short-term memory is not good.

• 46:12Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 46:13Speaker 03

All right. It's getting better because of what I do now for work and I'm like, I've been working that muscle. My fucking long-term memory, I've had numerous people on this New York trip tell me stories. I hadn't seen them in a while. Uh, like wild stories that I had no recollection of.

• 46:31Adam Friedland?

I think you're probably just fucked up.

• 46:33Speaker 03

I was moving fast and I was fucked up.

• 46:34Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 46:35Speaker 03

But also a little bit of the CTE is starting to.

• 46:38Adam Friedland?

I think the short goes first though.

• 46:40Speaker 03

  Well.

• 46:42Speaker 03

Well, my short's not like, it's not the best.

• 46:45Adam Friedland?

My mom had, my mom had.

• 46:46Speaker 03

  Look what just happened.

• 46:47Adam Friedland?

My mom had brain, brain cancer, so she experienced like dementia and like, the cool thing was like, when she started, the short term went, I would talk to her and I'd tell, have her tell stories from before. And so she tell, she would remember things from like, like nineteen eighty-one, like in, and that, that was like a way I could like,

• 47:06Speaker 03

  Interesting.

• 47:07Adam Friedland?

  Chill with her.

• 47:07Speaker 03

  Is she still here?

• 47:08Adam Friedland?

No, she, she passed away, yeah. She was my best, dude, she was my twin.

• 47:11Speaker 03

You know, I've been reading a lot of, uh, uh, research papers on LSD and Alzheimer's prevention.

• 47:18Adam Friedland?

Um, she, well, yeah, she had brain cancer.

• 47:21Speaker 03

No, I understand, but, but, but the brain and, and.

• 47:24Adam Friedland?

It's so sad. But for you, so like, I, I wanna talk about Tortorella and like, that situation, because like, you had a.

• 47:31Speaker 03

Did you just say, yeah, your mom dying was obviously terribly sad, right?

• 47:35Adam Friedland?

  Of course, yeah.

• 47:36Speaker 03

  Was it recently?

• 47:37Adam Friedland?

Uh, no, it was like five years ago.

• 47:39Speaker 03

But you're still in the trenches on it.

• 47:41Adam Friedland?

No, it's just like, um, it's kind of a nice thing, you realize that it, you're, it's just, it never gets better. But in a way that's nice, where it's just becomes part of you. Where you just understand life in a deeper way.

• 47:52Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 47:53Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 47:53Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 47:54Adam Friedland?

And so it's just like, you can get used to someone not being there.

• 47:56Speaker 03

I got it, I got it.

• 47:57Adam Friedland?

That aspect is, and it's so, it's just like, uh, yeah, it was like a defining moment.

• 48:04Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 48:04Adam Friedland?

I don't think I ever like, believed in God or anything, but like, uh, at the end of, of my family being together, I was like, oh, this is kind of the point, like, you're just like, uh, like, you know, sharing.

• 48:14Speaker 03

And it was more of a spiritual thing versus?

• 48:17Adam Friedland?

No, it wasn't even spiritual, it was like, you know, like, if you live on earth and you have love and you give love to.

• 48:23Speaker 03

You have to have blood, blood, you have each other's back.

• 48:26Adam Friedland?

  Oh, blood, like.

• 48:27Speaker 03

You go down with the ship together.

• 48:29Adam Friedland?

I learned to appreciate like, uh, family a lot more, because we had, we have family members that have like, literally, sociopaths, like stolen money, bad people, right? And, uh, we had close family friends that wanted to like, be around and helpful and we, we asked them like, just like, not to, like, they were like, trying to like, bring meals to the house, and then like, the, our family that are like. Just like there are gypsies, like uh, we, those were the ones we wanted there.

• 48:55Speaker 03

Right, right. Yeah, yeah, I, I got it.

• 48:58Adam Friedland?

I mean, just like people we've, we've had falling outs with for twenty years, like those are the people, they're still like at the end of meeting there.

• 49:06Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 49:06Adam Friedland?

And in a really cool way, cause those are your guys.

• 49:08Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 49:09Adam Friedland?

  Those are the fucking guys.

• 49:10Speaker 03

Yep, I agree, I agree. And I think a little bit of that, I don't know, I'm like, trauma is kind of good now. Cause it's, it's helpful to kind of like, I feel like, uh, I never did ketamine. I did a ketamine drip once.

• 49:28Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 49:29Speaker 03

And it, and it felt like I was in a video game, like I was kinda like stepping in jello. That's how I feel now, like, just sort of more open. And like, people have tough times and like, I, I, I'm okay with, and part of that is becoming a martial artist. I want to feel shit now.

• 49:55Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 49:56Speaker 03

But also our job, you can't have highs and lows when you're a professional athlete. Like, you're not paid to, you're paid to be emotional, but also unemotional. And actually more, more, less emotions is better.

• 50:14Adam Friedland?

Were there guys that were robots that you just couldn't, you couldn't fucking wind up?

• 50:17Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 50:18Adam Friedland?

  Did it drive you nuts?

• 50:19Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 50:19Adam Friedland?

There was like, this guy has, Joe Sackey has like, just, he's like a, yeah, he's the Terminator.

• 50:24Speaker 03

He can't, you, you, you know.

• 50:26Adam Friedland?

  He's the fucking Terminator.

• 50:27Speaker 03

  You couldn't, you couldn't.

• 50:28Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 50:29Speaker 03

So yeah, the, the, the high level G's, those are like the samurais, those were the guys that like.

• 50:34Adam Friedland?

  Just Buddha, Buddhas.

• 50:35Speaker 03

They can, it, it, it's like clear the mechanism and they're just, they're on a different wavelength.

• 50:40Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 50:41Speaker 03

There's not many of those guys, but yeah.

• 50:43Adam Friedland?

I think in all professional sports, those guys are always just the, yeah.

• 50:46Speaker 03

Yeah, Yamamoto, Shohei, I love the Japanese players.

• 50:51Adam Friedland?

The Kobe, like, when Matt Barnes is like faking the inbound and Kobe doesn't flinch.

• 50:55Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 50:56Adam Friedland?

  It's just like there.

• 50:57Speaker 03

  He wants that.

• 50:58Adam Friedland?

Yeah, there's something about it where he's just like, it does not, it, it's a human reflex to be like this and he's just a, he's the Terminator.

• 51:05Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 51:06Adam Friedland?

  He's like shed his humanity.

• 51:07Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 51:08Adam Friedland?

  He's a killing machine.

• 51:09Speaker 03

  No, I understand it.

• 51:10Adam Friedland?

I, I wanna talk about the road, well.

• 51:12Speaker 03

  Avery rule?

• 51:13Adam Friedland?

Let's, this is like, this is the most me thing, this one really got me fired up. Because like, you've figured out. Do you know what a penneka is?

• 51:24Speaker 03

Uh, no, is it a palindrome?

• 51:26Adam Friedland?

No, a penneka, so in soccer, right?

• 51:29Speaker 03

  Uh huh.

• 51:30Adam Friedland?

They're, they've been shooting like penalty kicks for a hundred years of the sport. And then this guy, um, I'll show you penneka.

• 51:40Speaker 03

  Wait, wait.

• 51:40Adam Friedland?

This guy like realized, he's like, what if I just, uh?

• 51:44Speaker 03

  Is this recently?

• 51:45Adam Friedland?

No, this is like in the eighties. He's a Czechoslovakia guy. Yeah, so.

• 51:55Adam Friedland?

So it's just this Czechoslovakia guy, he's like, what if I don't go left or right? What if I just like chip it down the middle?

• 52:01Speaker 03

Oh, I remember the, yeah, of course.

• 52:07Speaker 03

  Right.

• 52:07Adam Friedland?

  So like.

• 52:09Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 52:09Adam Friedland?

The thing about the Broder moment, right?

• 52:11Speaker 03

Great, great, great correlation too, by the way.

• 52:14Adam Friedland?

Is that you just did something, you, was it, what was the thought process? It, was it, you say it's not calculated. You say you just, you skated towards.

• 52:25Speaker 03

  So, so.

• 52:25Adam Friedland?

  It was like fifteen seconds.

• 52:26Speaker 03

It wasn't premeditated, I'll say that.

• 52:29Adam Friedland?

So explain for, for the audience like what it was.

• 52:31Speaker 03

So, so, so Broder is a goalie. Marty, one of the greatest goalies of all time.

• 52:37Adam Friedland?

  Fatso.

• 52:37Speaker 03

Fatso, forgot to shake my hand.

• 52:39Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 52:40Speaker 03

Um, I'm a forward. We're, our job is to basically get in front of his face and cause some sort of obstruction. Kill his line of sight. That's really what you want to do. As a player, you don't want, you don't want to be one on one with a goalie because he has sight on the puck. You want to shoot through a screen. All the great goal scorers, they shoot through screens.

• 53:04Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 53:05Speaker 03

So it's like, it's a seeing eye puck, okay? My job was to not touch the, really the puck because I'm on the ice with Scott Gomez, legendary.

• 53:16Adam Friedland?

  Gomer.

• 53:17Speaker 03

Gomer, Alaskan born. Uh, Chris Drury, who's now the general manager of the, the Rangers. Brendan Shanahan and Jeremy Yager, in my opinion, the greatest European player of all time. So my job is to make sure that I can break that sight line so that one of these superstars can get a puck into the net.

• 53:39Adam Friedland?

  Right.

• 53:40Speaker 03

Okay? When I go to the front of the net and Martin Brodeur, the goalie, who is a wily veteran, like a G, an OG.

• 53:48Adam Friedland?

  Right.

• 53:49Speaker 03

  Okay?

• 53:49Adam Friedland?

  He was a shithouser too.

• 53:51Speaker 03

He was a shithouser. He knew how to play the game. And I would go to the front of the net and in hockey skates, if you poke a guy behind his knees, because our blades are rocker, you can use the momentum and the guy will just go ass over teakettle.

• 54:07Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 54:08Speaker 03

  So Brodeur would do that.

• 54:09Adam Friedland?

  Like back of the knee.

• 54:10Speaker 03

  Yes. Boom, you're gone.

• 54:12Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 54:12Speaker 03

And he wanted me to fall into him, because then he would sell it and I would take the penalty.

• 54:18Adam Friedland?

  Right.

• 54:19Speaker 03

So it's this chess game between, you know, two diabolical guys that are trying to help their team win.

• 54:24Adam Friedland?

  That's a bet move.

• 54:25Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 54:25Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 54:26Speaker 03

Now, the moment that I made the decision, it was a power play. I knew that I had to go to the front of the net. Okay, I had like 15 seconds notice, like, okay, I'm going out there and I know where I need to go. I jump over the boards. This is Madison Square Garden during the fucking playoffs, like.

• 54:47Adam Friedland?

  Cathedral of the game.

• 54:49Speaker 03

  Right.

• 54:49Adam Friedland?

Give it up for the G.

• 54:50Speaker 03

Right. Pre-renovation. So the building even moved a little bit different back there. I take two strides and I can remember like having an inner debate with myself for the next like six to eight strides, which is probably two seconds.

• 55:08Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 55:10Speaker 03

From the time I jump over the boards to get in front of the net, we're talking like six seconds total, maybe.

• 55:15Adam Friedland?

  Like a eureka moment?

• 55:16Speaker 03

I said, you know, I love Risky Business. It's one of my favorite movies of all time. Sometimes you gotta just say what the fuck.

• 55:25Adam Friedland?

  So good.

• 55:27Speaker 03

And I said, yeah, I'm gonna do it. And I just went directly in front of him and I have the luxury of seeing his eyes that no one else could see. And this guy, multiple Stanley Cups. And I just said, fuck, if I put my hand in front of his face, and every time he moves somewhere, my hand moves with it, I've just solved the riddle of 100 years of this game, which is trying to break a goalie's eye line.

• 55:54Adam Friedland?

So effectively, you're gonna turn your back to the game of hockey happening, and you're gonna just be annoying. You're gonna be like...

• 56:02Speaker 03

Yeah, I'd be like this. Like if you...

• 56:05Adam Friedland?

Yeah, and he's gonna be like, get the fuck out of my way.

• 56:08Speaker 03

Right, right, like how quick that happened.

• 56:09Adam Friedland?

  You're being annoying right now.

• 56:11Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 56:11Adam Friedland?

And then the dopest part of that sequence was that you fucking dunked.

• 56:17Speaker 03

  I scored, yeah.

• 56:18Adam Friedland?

Yeah. How did that feel? Is that your favorite goal?

• 56:21Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, I think so.

• 56:23Adam Friedland?

  Do you feel like God?

• 56:24Speaker 03

  I think so.

• 56:25Adam Friedland?

That must... The way the building fucking rocked?

• 56:28Speaker 03

  I think so, yeah, yeah.

• 56:31Adam Friedland?

  How... Fuck.

• 56:32Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 56:32Adam Friedland?

Is that better than the, uh...

• 56:34Speaker 03

  Sex?

• 56:34Adam Friedland?

Sex, yeah, it has to be.

• 56:36Speaker 03

  It's the one thing.

• 56:37Adam Friedland?

  It's the one... Goals.

• 56:38Speaker 03

I've never chased the dragon, but...

• 56:41Adam Friedland?

  I wish.

• 56:42Speaker 03

Goals at MSG. Goals in Nashville, or...

• 56:47Adam Friedland?

And you also know Andy Cohen?

• 56:49Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 56:49Adam Friedland?

You have the best life ever.

• 56:51Speaker 03

Yeah, People Magazine said we were once engaged.

• 56:54Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 56:54Speaker 03

Yeah. Me and Andy used to do these Miami trips at the end of the season. So, uh, we'd go to Ultra. You know Ultra Music Festival? It used to be cool.

• 57:04Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 57:05Speaker 03

Now it's very commercialized, like everything. Hopefully your show, hopefully you don't sell your soul.

• 57:10Adam Friedland?

No, dude, I'm open for the highest bidder.

• 57:13Speaker 03

  Right. Me too.

• 57:14Adam Friedland?

Saudi Arabia, anyone that wants to come, yeah, yeah.

• 57:16Speaker 03

What about Benny? Why isn't Benny paying ya?

• 57:18Adam Friedland?

  Oh...

• 57:19Speaker 03

The influencer program, you didn't get it?

• 57:21Adam Friedland?

  Nah, I just...

• 57:23Speaker 03

You didn't get in on that?

• 57:24Adam Friedland?

I've said a couple of things with the...

• 57:25Speaker 03

  Oh, oh, right.

• 57:27Adam Friedland?

I think I've said a couple of things.

• 57:28Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 57:29Adam Friedland?

I think I have a list somewhere, yeah.

• 57:30Speaker 03

Got it. Um, so, so I do the thing, I score. Here's the interesting part of the whole thing, okay? To change a rule in the NHL, you have to do it at the Board of Governors meeting in the summer.

• 57:45Adam Friedland?

  The Oder's meeting?

• 57:46Speaker 03

Yes. And the union, the players' union is, is, they're representing...

• 57:51Adam Friedland?

  What's that?

• 57:52Speaker 03

It's a whole thing. Funny that they're talking about goalies.

• 57:57Adam Friedland?

  I'm sorry.

• 57:58Speaker 03

No, no. So to change a rule in the NHL, you have to do it in the summer at the Board of Governors meeting, which is voted on between the players' union and the teams, the owners.

• 58:09Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 58:10Speaker 03

  Okay?

• 58:10Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 58:10Speaker 03

We're gonna do a rule change. Everybody's gonna put a ballot in and I'm sure it's on an iPad now. I did the fucking thing in front of Brodeur. We won the game. Uh, I think we won the game. We lost the game. We won the series.

• 58:24Adam Friedland?

  You won the series.

• 58:24Speaker 03

  Okay. Nice. Nice doc.

• 58:26Adam Friedland?

  You lost in overtime.

• 58:27Speaker 03

Yeah. Okay. So it was a high stakes game. I went to bed. I woke up the next morning. I had a missed call or a text message. Glenn Sather and they were giving me a heads up like, yo, they just changed the rule and you're not allowed to do that tonight or ever again.

• 58:50Adam Friedland?

  It's kind of bullshit.

• 58:51Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 58:52Adam Friedland?

  Do you think that like?

• 58:53Speaker 03

It's illegal. And, and, and I want to do a 30 for 30 on it or some sort of like little mini doc.

• 58:58Adam Friedland?

  It'd be amazing.

• 58:59Speaker 03

But I don't want to expose everyone. I just want to know, like, who made that call? Cause that's a funny call. If, if Gary Bettman's like, okay, we're gonna break precedent. We're gonna do something illegal, but he can't do that again.

• 59:12Adam Friedland?

Like all the owners are in their pajamas.

• 59:14Speaker 03

  Right.

• 59:14Adam Friedland?

And they have to get them on like a, not a Zoom.

• 59:16Speaker 03

Right. Right. Like, did you see, are we good? Can I, can we, can we do this? We're gonna, we're gonna step out of line here and do something that we've never done before.

• 59:27Adam Friedland?

  Because, because the bad kid.

• 59:29Speaker 03

  The bad man.

• 59:30Adam Friedland?

The bad guy. You were naughty.

• 59:32Speaker 03

  Yeah. I found a loophole.

• 59:34Adam Friedland?

You found, I mean, it was just like.

• 59:35Speaker 03

It was a fucking gray area.

• 59:36Adam Friedland?

Moment, moment of brilliance and it's just like, that is to me so cool.

• 59:41Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 59:41Adam Friedland?

And I don't even think it should be against the rules.

• 59:44Speaker 03

Uh, I can see where they're coming from. Cause then it gets a little bit of like,

• 59:48Adam Friedland?

  Then everyone, that's annoying?

• 59:50Speaker 03

Well, I would draft the biggest guy I could ever find that I could put in skates.

• 59:53Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 59:54Speaker 03

And just bigger than Chara. Just to make sure his arms could work and say, you gotta figure out how to skate from here to the front of the net.

• 1:00:00Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:01Speaker 03

And all you have to do is just use your, your like shack.

• 1:00:05Adam Friedland?

I was, I lived in DC during the like, the Caps Pens years. And I got, I got back into hockey, it was really fun. Actually, my friend was, was sleeping with this girl and she was, uh, she was also sleeping with Ovi. Yeah, yeah, and she would just get a text, like, he was like, he wasn't dating her.

• 1:00:23Speaker 03

  Just leave?

• 1:00:24Adam Friedland?

She, yeah, she would just leave. She'd get a text that said, "I want fuck you in ass."

• 1:00:30Adam Friedland?

He's the coolest guy of all time.

• 1:00:31Speaker 03

  Ovi? I love Ovi.

• 1:00:32Adam Friedland?

You ever, you ever chill with him?

• 1:00:34Speaker 03

No, I never had the luxury.

• 1:00:36Adam Friedland?

There's something so fucking like, just lovable about him. Like in a Shohei way, where they're like, they're kind of, uh, they're kind of like, uh, like a big dog or something, right?

• 1:00:47Speaker 03

Because you know what? They love the game.

• 1:00:49Adam Friedland?

But like, there was a defenseman on the Pens that was like, he was nine feet tall.

• 1:00:54Speaker 03

  Hal Gill.

• 1:00:55Adam Friedland?

  Do you remember that guy?

• 1:00:56Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:00:56Adam Friedland?

  Did you play against him?

• 1:00:57Speaker 03

Yeah, I lacerated my spleen and almost died in St. Vincent's because I hit him.

• 1:01:01Adam Friedland?

  Because of that guy?

• 1:01:02Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:01:03Adam Friedland?

What did you try to do?

• 1:01:04Speaker 03

No, it was, we were in the playoffs. It was the second round. I think it was game three. And a puck got dumped in from the blue line and I can remember it so vividly. You know, it's weird what sticks with you. And I said to myself, it was like, I'm gonna fucking kill Hal Gill right now.

• 1:01:22Adam Friedland?

But he was like nine feet tall.

• 1:01:23Speaker 03

  I know, but I, I'm, I'm going to like, I'm the guy that's gonna.

• 1:01:27Adam Friedland?

  Prison rules.

• 1:01:27Speaker 03

  I am going to get.

• 1:01:29Adam Friedland?

  Biggest bastard.

• 1:01:29Speaker 03

Hal Gill right now. We're at home. I went a hundred miles an hour. I hit him so fucking hard. And I think he just like, he just kinda like leaned into me because he was huge. He was six foot eight. And I remember, like, you know, when you get hit or punched and you wanna pretend like it didn't hurt? So then, I kinda like, got to the bench and Cass, our trainer.

• 1:01:56Adam Friedland?

  Bounced off him.

• 1:01:56Speaker 03

I bounced off of him, bounced off of him. I got to the bench, I, I said to, uh, it was actually Jim Ramsey, Rammer. I go, "I think I just tore my abdominals." Can we go in and get a Toradol shot? So.

• 1:02:12Adam Friedland?

  Drugs.

• 1:02:12Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:02:13Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:13Speaker 03

So I, we went in and I got.

• 1:02:15Adam Friedland?

You were geeked. You guys were like future.

• 1:02:18Speaker 03

  We.

• 1:02:18Adam Friedland?

You guys were off of, off the perks. Yeah.

• 1:02:20Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, we were.

• 1:02:22Adam Friedland?

That's the only way you get through, right?

• 1:02:24Speaker 03

Well, Toradol's only, you can only use it in the playoffs. That's when we're allowed to technically use it.

• 1:02:30Adam Friedland?

  You get better drugs?

• 1:02:31Speaker 03

Um, yeah, they, they, you get the good stuff.

• 1:02:34Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:34Speaker 03

You get the actual, they put a needle. It's like the perfect, you know, the, the sports scene where you bend over the table and the needle goes in the ass.

• 1:02:41Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:41Speaker 03

Anyways, I thought that I tore my abdominals. I got a Toradol shot. Uh, it was my second. I finished the game and after the game I got into a cold tub and I got into the cold tub and all of a sudden I felt like I got stabbed in the shoulder. And shout out Doc Feldman, Andrew Feldman, good Jew.

• 1:03:02Speaker 03

Uh, he said, let's go. They put me in a robe. They took me to St. Vincent's. I got to St. Vincent's. I had hit Haagil so hard that I lacerated my, my spleen, my own spleen. So he didn't hit me, right? Normally you get hit by a car. You get a lacerated spleen in a car accident. I did it to myself because I was like, I'm going to kill Haagil right now.

• 1:03:26Adam Friedland?

  What are you, idiot?

• 1:03:26Speaker 03

And he, and I spent six nights in the ICU of St. Vincent, which is not even here anymore. They tore it down in the, in the West Village.

• 1:03:35Adam Friedland?

Yeah, it's the nice hospital now.

• 1:03:37Speaker 03

  Well.

• 1:03:37Adam Friedland?

  With the circles, yeah.

• 1:03:38Speaker 03

It wasn't. It's for most of the AIDS. Yes, yes.

• 1:03:42Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:43Speaker 03

And I was in the basement and I saw, I said, I'm, I'm, I'll go. I'm, I'm good with this at this point.

• 1:03:50Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 1:03:50Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:03:51Adam Friedland?

  You want to die?

• 1:03:54Speaker 03

I, yeah, it was a shooting. It was a, it was a, it was a, they had to cauterize it, but they could only, it was a type of, of, of bleed that you could only see it when the scope was in. So I had to keep going in. I had, they had to scope me like four times over the course of five days. It was crazy, dude.

• 1:04:13Adam Friedland?

I talked to, well, I'll, I'll ask you first and then I'll, I'll tell you what I've gotten, uh, in my research, but, um, how do you think your profile player would translate to 2025 NHL?

• 1:04:25Speaker 03

  Oh.

• 1:04:28Speaker 03

Oh my god. Well, the funny thing is if I had have started taking uh uh jujitsu while I was playing, I would have won multiple Stanley Cups.

• 1:04:39Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 1:04:39Speaker 03

And I'd probably be the president of the United States.

• 1:04:42Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 1:04:42Speaker 03

  I mean it.

• 1:04:43Adam Friedland?

No, you you were you were born in Canada.

• 1:04:45Speaker 03

  Right, that's true.

• 1:04:46Adam Friedland?

  Fuck off.

• 1:04:47Speaker 03

  That's right.

• 1:04:47Adam Friedland?

Yeah, okay, wait, so what uh but like.

• 1:04:49Speaker 03

  But but.

• 1:04:49Adam Friedland?

  How would jujitsu help, though?

• 1:04:52Speaker 03

Because it it slowed everything down and what I wanted, what I did, I sped everything up.

• 1:04:58Adam Friedland?

  Went too fast, yeah.

• 1:04:59Speaker 03

  I sped everything up.

• 1:05:01Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:01Speaker 03

Everything went from like zero to a hundred immediately. And guys, you know, on my team and it was warm ups, it was just always, it was constant.

• 1:05:12Adam Friedland?

Yeah, that was I soccer, like, some of the best players, they look like they're going like it's so slow.

• 1:05:18Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:05:18Adam Friedland?

Because like uh there's like a term for it, like a Spanish Impulsa. But where the the player like and there's chaos surrounding him and they just look like they're in the eye of the storm.

• 1:05:27Speaker 03

  Right.

• 1:05:27Adam Friedland?

And they just they're everything is just so like people are just falling over.

• 1:05:31Speaker 03

  Ah.

• 1:05:32Adam Friedland?

It's like looks like uh but what they're doing is their their brain is doing math.

• 1:05:37Speaker 03

  Right.

• 1:05:38Adam Friedland?

  There's like they're doing equations.

• 1:05:39Speaker 03

  They're computing, yes, yes.

• 1:05:40Adam Friedland?

  And it's like uh.

• 1:05:42Speaker 03

And you know what's so ironic? It's like everything comes around full circle. I'm going to Detroit for the uh centennial anniversary alumni. Steve Iserman was the one guy that sat me down and said, just shut the fuck up. Just shut the fuck up and play.

• 1:06:05Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:05Speaker 03

  And he doesn't do that.

• 1:06:08Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:08Speaker 03

With a lot of people, he certainly didn't then.

• 1:06:11Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:11Speaker 03

  As a player.

• 1:06:12Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:13Speaker 03

  And

• 1:06:15Speaker 03

on one hand, I can say I should have listened to him, I would have had a better hockey career.

• 1:06:20Adam Friedland?

Well, you sustained a career from not shutting the fuck up.

• 1:06:23Speaker 03

  Right.

• 1:06:24Adam Friedland?

But that means that one of the goats believed in your skills.

• 1:06:27Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 1:06:27Adam Friedland?

  That's that's kind of dope.

• 1:06:28Speaker 03

  Of course.

• 1:06:29Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:29Speaker 03

And and and he would say that I probably left a lot on the table as far as playing wise.

• 1:06:35Adam Friedland?

  Interesting.

• 1:06:36Speaker 03

Now, the other side of it is that I think I was like more an entertainer than than a player.

• 1:06:45Adam Friedland?

And that's, I mean, like, we'll get to it because I I want to say this what I've heard first, but like, that's an interesting thought to be like. Well, this is, I mean, you're an actor now.

• 1:06:55Speaker 03

I mean, like. No, no, but that's the same thing. It's, I'm telling a story.

• 1:06:59Adam Friedland?

Exactly. What I've got, I talked to like an NHL insider. He said your skillset would apply better to a modern NBA or NHL.

• 1:07:09Speaker 03

Oh, I'd be, I'd be a gamer right now.

• 1:07:12Adam Friedland?

  Because like.

• 1:07:12Speaker 03

I would dominate because I could skate.

• 1:07:14Adam Friedland?

And also, the, it was you being undersized.

• 1:07:17Speaker 03

Yeah, now, now, now, oh, yeah.

• 1:07:19Adam Friedland?

You're a great skater. And then also, like, the psychological elements of the game have, have, actually, it's kind of a coveted, like a GM will seek out, like, we're going on a playoff.

• 1:07:30Speaker 03

There's not many of these guys left. Yes.

• 1:07:33Adam Friedland?

And from what I understand, like, the Panthers are kind of like an Avery type of team.

• 1:07:37Speaker 03

Sam Bennett, they have multiple Avery-esque players. I mean, better than Avery, but like, they have some of my.

• 1:07:46Adam Friedland?

They wear the, like, the evil empire kind of thing.

• 1:07:49Speaker 03

  They do, yes.

• 1:07:49Adam Friedland?

Because they're like starting a little dynasty situation.

• 1:07:51Speaker 03

Yes, and I love watching them.

• 1:07:53Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:07:54Speaker 03

And I wish, and I'm very critical of the Rangers, and I wish we had players in New York City that played a little bit like some of those fucking guys in Florida.

• 1:08:04Adam Friedland?

Yeah. In the, in the tree of like, of your profile in the NHL as agitator, like, who do you see as your, your OGs?

• 1:08:13Speaker 03

  Oh, God, OGs?

• 1:08:15Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:16Speaker 03

A lot of my peers, this guy Steve Ott, who I played with in Dallas, who's now assistant coach in St. Louis, was a, a complete animal. He would, he would, he would, he would decimate your entire bloodline if he could, if he had enough time and he was a savage. You know, Tiger Williams was this guy that, that played back in the day. They, and Eddie Shaq, it was like, clear the track, here comes Shaq. There's been some, Kenny Linsman, the rat.

• 1:08:47Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:48Speaker 03

Kenny Linsman was my dad's favorite player. He played for the Bruins. Yeah, they called him, he was the original rat.

• 1:08:54Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:55Speaker 03

So, I always loved, yeah, I, you know, Dougie Gilmore, to a certain extent, but was a little bit more skilled. He was a Toronto Maple Leaf.

• 1:09:04Adam Friedland?

And did you conceive of what you were doing as like playing at the heel, like, in like professional wrestling?

• 1:09:07Speaker 03

  Absolutely.

• 1:09:08Adam Friedland?

  You're like Eddie Guerrero, almost.

• 1:09:10Speaker 03

Yeah, and, and Ronda Rousey, I think she's going to come back as a heel.

• 1:09:16Adam Friedland?

  Is she?

• 1:09:16Speaker 03

I think to the UFC, yeah.

• 1:09:18Adam Friedland?

Well, kind of what you were doing by being a fancy boy is like, you were doing a little bit of gold dust, too. Right?

• 1:09:23Speaker 03

  I was inflaming, I was-

• 1:09:25Adam Friedland?

You were like acting like a little bit, a little bit spicy, right?

• 1:09:27Speaker 03

Yeah, but I was also the first person that brought, I mean, I brought Andre Leon Tally to a Ranger game.

• 1:09:35Adam Friedland?

  Who's that?

• 1:09:36Speaker 03

He was a giant, gay, black, fashion man who worked under Anna Wintor for a long time at Vogue. A legendary-

• 1:09:45Adam Friedland?

You were trying to distract the guys?

• 1:09:48Speaker 03

  Well, kind of, maybe.

• 1:09:51Adam Friedland?

Am I correct to say the NHL is the only North American sport that's, uh, has never had an out gay player?

• 1:09:56Speaker 03

Well, because we're the only sport that, outside of UFC, like, we fight, and I still think there's that-

• 1:10:04Adam Friedland?

  That macho.

• 1:10:05Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, yeah. And, and, ah, I've played with gay players.

• 1:10:11Adam Friedland?

  Totally.

• 1:10:11Speaker 03

  For sure.

• 1:10:12Adam Friedland?

  I'm bet, yeah.

• 1:10:13Speaker 03

Uh, that was, I gave you an opportunity to, you could've came at me on that one.

• 1:10:19Adam Friedland?

  What?

• 1:10:20Speaker 03

Like, what, how do you know they were gay?

• 1:10:22Adam Friedland?

  I don't, I don't know.

• 1:10:23Speaker 03

No, you would ask me that.

• 1:10:25Adam Friedland?

How do you know they were gay?

• 1:10:26Speaker 03

Implying that I had, like, sexual relations with some of my gay teammates.

• 1:10:31Adam Friedland?

  You fucked your guys?

• 1:10:32Speaker 03

No, see, that's what I'm saying. I was already way ahead of, I was already playing the bit.

• 1:10:36Adam Friedland?

Were you trying to help them come out of the closet, or like, was it, was it?

• 1:10:39Speaker 03

No, I was trying, oh, you, are you doing it, ha, ha, ha, that was good.

• 1:10:44Adam Friedland?

In, in terms of, like, you playing the heel, and like, you, what, like, you're kind of, uh, and you realizing that your entire thirteen years was a type of performance, right?

• 1:10:55Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, well said.

• 1:10:56Adam Friedland?

Uh, then like, most of the times you got in trouble, from what I saw.

• 1:11:00Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:11:00Adam Friedland?

Wasn't it actually like you were doing a dirty hit on the ice? Wasn't it like you were trying to, like, you could give a guy a spinal injury? It was, uh, talk of the press, right?

• 1:11:09Speaker 03

I said the sloppy seconds thing, which was, you know-

• 1:11:13Adam Friedland?

What, what, why, it's not, it's nothing. In 2025, it's nothing. In the NBA, there's like six girls that they all have sex with.

• 1:11:20Speaker 03

No, but, but, it was a, it was a crass and, and it was-

• 1:11:25Adam Friedland?

That to me just seemed like Gary Bettman was like just sick of you, right?

• 1:11:29Speaker 03

Gary wanted to send a message.

• 1:11:30Adam Friedland?

That was like, you, you, it was his last straw, right?

• 1:11:33Speaker 03

  Again, well said, yes, yes.

• 1:11:34Adam Friedland?

Um, but like, but the problem, what, what I saw was like- Going back to Connor McDavid, love him, we love, but like,

• 1:11:43Speaker 03

  You know, I was

• 1:11:45Adam Friedland?

You're gonna give them an interview, right? The rest of the guys are gonna be like, well, you gotta plead, you got three periods.

• 1:11:52Speaker 03

  Yeah, we are

• 1:11:53Adam Friedland?

For the puck, with the puck drops and

• 1:11:54Speaker 03

Yeah, hockey players have been conditioned to be some of the worst soundbites of all time.

• 1:12:01Adam Friedland?

And you're like, you're giving them, like, so the media is like, you're feeding, to some extent, you're like,

• 1:12:06Speaker 03

One of my great quotes to the media, and this sort of ties into like, what I was doing. I was on the back page of the Post when Spitzer went in this, I got pulled into the Spitzer.

• 1:12:19Adam Friedland?

  Oh, you got fired nine?

• 1:12:20Speaker 03

I got, I got pulled in.

• 1:12:22Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 1:12:23Speaker 03

And the back cover was, uh, The Ranger and the Madam, because somebody said that I was in the book.

• 1:12:30Adam Friedland?

  Oh, were you?

• 1:12:31Speaker 03

I walked in, so when I got to the rink that day and the horde of reporters, I said, guys, anytime that I've ever been to a whorehouse, I didn't use my real name.

• 1:12:42Adam Friedland?

  And they loved it.

• 1:12:43Speaker 03

  And that was it.

• 1:12:44Adam Friedland?

  And they loved it.

• 1:12:45Speaker 03

And that was, it was done.

• 1:12:46Adam Friedland?

But like, they're not gonna get that out of these like, these like, guys from

• 1:12:50Speaker 03

  I agree.

• 1:12:51Adam Friedland?

  Saskatchewan.

• 1:12:52Speaker 03

  I agree.

• 1:12:53Adam Friedland?

They're like, they're, and so, to some extent, you were giving the NHL, you were like, uh, like headlines, you were like, you were actually like, doing something for the league.

• 1:13:04Speaker 03

On a national level, well, yeah, more than some of like, the stars in the league, for sure.

• 1:13:10Adam Friedland?

Nowadays, it would be conceived in a different way, I think, right? Because like, nowadays, we understand that like, that's a, that what you're doing is you're effectively doing PR for the league, and you're making it more popular.

• 1:13:21Speaker 03

Yeah, I mean, you know, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are a great example.

• 1:13:25Adam Friedland?

  Of what?

• 1:13:26Speaker 03

  Of, of, you know, what?

• 1:13:28Adam Friedland?

  White nationalism.

• 1:13:32Speaker 03

Of um, uh, like what we wanna see from our, our athletes.

• 1:13:40Adam Friedland?

  Perfect area to school.

• 1:13:41Speaker 03

So when I was doing it, it was like, oh, he, look at this guy, he's dating, he's like, he's dating fancy, he's dating famous girls. It was sort of weird.

• 1:13:51Adam Friedland?

  That's bad?

• 1:13:52Speaker 03

  And the guy before me.

• 1:13:53Adam Friedland?

  Any hot girls is bad?

• 1:13:54Speaker 03

Well, it's, it's, it's an old boys' club and it's a very traditional like.

• 1:13:59Adam Friedland?

Like, like the shower. Yeah, yeah.

• 1:14:00Speaker 03

  The shower.

• 1:14:01Adam Friedland?

Yeah, like the shower. So it's 95% gay? Yeah. You're like one of the only guys that gets pussy and now you're getting, you got judged for it? You got suspended for getting pussy?

• 1:14:11Speaker 03

  Yeah, essentially, right?

• 1:14:13Adam Friedland?

You decide, you announce you wanna be a Shakespearean actor after you retired.

• 1:14:17Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:14:18Adam Friedland?

Um, you, and then like you, you've pursued creative, uh, like you've been doing something from eight to like, when did you retire?

• 1:14:27Speaker 03

  I was 33 maybe.

• 1:14:29Adam Friedland?

So it's one thing your whole life?

• 1:14:30Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:14:31Adam Friedland?

Right? And like, when, when I was watching that Devils Rangers series.

• 1:14:36Speaker 03

  Uh huh.

• 1:14:37Adam Friedland?

  That's, that's war.

• 1:14:38Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:14:38Adam Friedland?

  You're fucking war.

• 1:14:39Speaker 03

I think, I think what happened was I was burnt out.

• 1:14:44Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:45Speaker 03

Because I was tired of being chased, you know, Gary was up my, the league, there was always something. Like, when I think back to Iserman saying, just shut the fuck up, it was too late at that point.

• 1:14:59Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:59Speaker 03

There had been so much heat and like, it was, it was.

• 1:15:02Adam Friedland?

You had a career waiting for you, probably as a result of like.

• 1:15:05Speaker 03

Well, well, I played, I played long enough that I, that I said, if I don't do it now and I stay, you know, then they pull you back in. Now I'm 40 when I'm done and I know I wanna do something else.

• 1:15:19Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:15:20Speaker 03

I gotta do it now while I'm young and energized and like, and thank God that. Yeah, thank God that I'd have more money now, I guess, you know?

• 1:15:30Adam Friedland?

You're competing against other dudes your whole life, right? Like, how do they replace that, right? To you, it's like doing like beautiful gorgeous paintings and like, you know, reading beautiful books.

• 1:15:41Speaker 03

  Well, I don't, well-

• 1:15:42Adam Friedland?

But those guys are like, are they gambling? Are they like, you know?

• 1:15:45Speaker 03

  It gets dark.

• 1:15:45Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, it gets dark.

• 1:15:46Speaker 03

  Gets dark.

• 1:15:47Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:48Speaker 03

  Gets dark.

• 1:15:48Adam Friedland?

Is there a support network like for the labs?

• 1:15:51Speaker 03

I think it's getting better for the boys.

• 1:15:53Adam Friedland?

Like the Players Association has something?

• 1:15:54Speaker 03

  I think it's getting better.

• 1:15:56Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:56Speaker 03

You know, we have great medical, so, yes, they're in much better situations than the average person, but they're also dealing with like, fuck, it's pretty dark. It's dark because you don't know, like, you don't know anything. You've only done one thing.

• 1:16:18Adam Friedland?

Well, you're trying to kill another guy your whole life. And then you're like, now you're like at the, what, like you're just-

• 1:16:22Speaker 03

  You're just a regular guy.

• 1:16:23Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:16:24Speaker 03

It gets dark. And you gotta figure out how to fucking, time is your enemy when you stop playing.

• 1:16:30Adam Friedland?

  You punched a cop, right?

• 1:16:33Speaker 03

  Um, oh, in LA, yeah.

• 1:16:35Adam Friedland?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, no, they- Antifa, Antifa style.

• 1:16:37Speaker 03

  They said-

• 1:16:38Adam Friedland?

You def- you defunded the police.

• 1:16:40Speaker 03

They said that, uh, no, they tried to come in the, this was in Laurel Canyon too, by the way, which is, you know, very hippity dippity, right? Earthy. Uh, yeah, they had a LAPD helicopter on top of the house telling me to surrender. And then I think I was on the back page of the post for that. Uh, the piggies, cause I was-

• 1:17:03Adam Friedland?

Whatever, what I, all I'm saying is this-

• 1:17:04Speaker 03

  Is that what you-

• 1:17:05Adam Friedland?

No, you're transitioning into a real life, it must be hard not to punch every cop you see. You're like a Vigo in, uh, History of Violence.

• 1:17:11Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 1:17:12Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:12Speaker 03

I couldn't, or Fight Club, or, you know, I couldn't go to work, I couldn't work in a regular atmosphere. When you come from an atmosphere where you're allowed to fight your coworker, as, as a, as a positive step, to then go into the public sector and what, what, I mean, I don't know, work for FanDuel? Or even at FanDuel, I'm sure there would be issues.

• 1:17:37Adam Friedland?

I would punch Fan, yeah, I would punch everyone, yeah.

• 1:17:40Speaker 03

  So-

• 1:17:40Adam Friedland?

Do you feel like you got out of the shit? You're like, you got out of NOM.

• 1:17:43Speaker 03

  I got out of NOM.

• 1:17:44Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:17:44Speaker 03

And you needed, and you needed some time, and I was, I was always-

• 1:17:49Adam Friedland?

It has to be a transition, right?

• 1:17:50Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:17:50Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:50Speaker 03

Because my job, like I said in the book-

• 1:17:55Speaker 03

I felt like a protector, so taking out my flamethrower, I would say was, I was being, it was a precautionary step. I didn't look at it as like, I was, I was just making sure everything was cool out there.

• 1:18:12Adam Friedland?

Right, because like, the best player on one team, like Sidney Crosby's gone in one fight, right?

• 1:18:15Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:18:16Adam Friedland?

Right? So, because there's a, because there's a knight like you, and he's like, "Oh, thank you."

• 1:18:21Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 1:18:22Adam Friedland?

  Like, who like, comes in.

• 1:18:22Speaker 03

  And handles it.

• 1:18:24Adam Friedland?

  And handles it.

• 1:18:25Speaker 03

So the transition takes, you know, it takes a while.

• 1:18:28Adam Friedland?

  So chivalrous.

• 1:18:28Speaker 03

  It's, it takes a while.

• 1:18:30Adam Friedland?

Was it, was there another guy where the two of you were like, "We love fighting each other," on another team?

• 1:18:36Speaker 03

  Um.

• 1:18:37Adam Friedland?

  It's kind of romantic.

• 1:18:38Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, me and Darcy Tucker did.

• 1:18:40Adam Friedland?

Yeah, you just had great ones.

• 1:18:42Speaker 03

  Yeah, and I love him.

• 1:18:43Adam Friedland?

And you high five afterwards, you're like?

• 1:18:45Speaker 03

No, no, but, and, and you know what's interesting? It's so crazy, because Darcy Tucker married one of his teammate's sisters. That was something that I would approach.

• 1:18:59Adam Friedland?

  Oh, so you chirp that?

• 1:19:00Speaker 03

  Yes, yes.

• 1:19:02Adam Friedland?

Well, I would tell the teammate that, that Darcy's dicking her so good tonight.

• 1:19:06Speaker 03

That's what I would, I would, I kept it away from.

• 1:19:08Adam Friedland?

And then Darcy would come in and say, "I'm not dicking her."

• 1:19:10Speaker 03

  He would defend his brother-in-law.

• 1:19:12Adam Friedland?

  His brother-in-law.

• 1:19:12Speaker 03

If his brother-in-law didn't snap, Darcy was coming over the top to defend his honor. So it was a win-win.

• 1:19:19Adam Friedland?

Family stuff worked best? What worked best?

• 1:19:21Speaker 03

I mean, sisters, you would get, the wires would get crossed if you, if, if the sisters.

• 1:19:26Adam Friedland?

You said to me, "I fucked your sister," I'd be like, "She's great, and you're great."

• 1:19:29Speaker 03

  Mazel tov.

• 1:19:31Adam Friedland?

  And I would love it.

• 1:19:32Speaker 03

  Right.

• 1:19:33Adam Friedland?

I would, I would give you my blessing.

• 1:19:35Speaker 03

  Right, but that's the...

• 1:19:36Adam Friedland?

  I'm Joe Sacking.

• 1:19:37Speaker 03

That's like the Jewish mom in you.

• 1:19:39Adam Friedland?

  I love that for you.

• 1:19:40Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. No, that, that was, that was, uh, uh, anything ex-girlfriend.

• 1:19:46Adam Friedland?

  Ex-girlfriend.

• 1:19:47Speaker 03

  Ex-girlfriend, because...

• 1:19:48Adam Friedland?

  She's such a, who cares?

• 1:19:50Speaker 03

Well, because she's now dating my teammate.

• 1:19:53Adam Friedland?

But that's what a bro goes through, right?

• 1:19:54Speaker 03

  Yeah, yes.

• 1:19:55Adam Friedland?

A bro's like, "You had sex before me?"

• 1:19:57Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:19:58Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:19:59Speaker 03

  Yeah, the fundamentals.

• 1:20:00Adam Friedland?

Um, let's get, so... How the fu- you're about to be in your third Christopher Nolan film.

• 1:20:06Speaker 03

Okay, when I was done playing, I did Dancing with the Stars.

• 1:20:09Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:20:09Speaker 03

And one of the producers on Dancing with the Stars' husband is a guy by the name of John Papsidera, who I think is-

• 1:20:17Adam Friedland?

  It's a hockey name.

• 1:20:19Speaker 03

Well, no, he's a casting director.

• 1:20:20Adam Friedland?

I know, but it sounds like a hockey name.

• 1:20:21Speaker 03

Yeah, it does, like, yeah, Papsidera.

• 1:20:23Adam Friedland?

Papsidera, he used to hit like a-

• 1:20:25Speaker 03

  Eh, like a truck.

• 1:20:26Adam Friedland?

  Like a truck.

• 1:20:27Speaker 03

So, because I did Dancing with the Stars, a few years later, my buddy Pete Berg put me in a movie called Patriots Day. I've never been on a movie set. Yes.

• 1:20:39Adam Friedland?

I saw it in a hotel once.

• 1:20:40Speaker 03

And I took the train up to Boston, and the combination of those two events, because once I did the thing in Boston with Pete, I go, "That's the closest thing I've ever felt to fighting at center ice on Madison Square Garden." I'm on set, there's 200 people, all of a sudden they go action, and it's like-

• 1:20:58Adam Friedland?

  You're acting.

• 1:20:59Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, because I did Dancing with the Stars and now did this Berg movie, now I get connected to John Papsidera, who has a history of casting and breaking, like, he likes interesting dudes.

• 1:21:15Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:21:16Speaker 03

  Okay?

• 1:21:16Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:17Speaker 03

And he puts me in Tenet, was the first one.

• 1:21:21Adam Friedland?

  Uh huh.

• 1:21:21Speaker 03

And I did six weeks on Tenet, the last final sequence when all the shits were blowing the shit up. Yes, inverted.

• 1:21:29Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:30Speaker 03

  Inverted ordinances and all that.

• 1:21:32Adam Friedland?

Oh, yeah, I got that movie really easy.

• 1:21:34Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:21:34Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:34Speaker 03

  Oh, you did?

• 1:21:35Adam Friedland?

  It made mad sense.

• 1:21:36Speaker 03

Really? It took me like 14 times with the subtitles on and I was in the movie to figure it out.

• 1:21:42Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:42Speaker 03

  But-

• 1:21:43Adam Friedland?

You should've asked while you were there.

• 1:21:44Speaker 03

  I've, I've-

• 1:21:45Adam Friedland?

You should've been like, "What the fuck is this?"

• 1:21:47Speaker 03

Uh, then I did Oppenheimer. And I auditioned for these roles.

• 1:21:53Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:54Speaker 03

I do the thing, the sides, the tape. And I don't know what happened at that point, but like, much like my hockey career, I had a couple of mentors, like, geez, that guided me.

• 1:22:07Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:22:07Speaker 03

That, that like, liked what was going on.

• 1:22:09Adam Friedland?

  Uh huh.

• 1:22:10Speaker 03

And I guess, I just finished, uh, doing The Odyssey, and, and so that's my third one. Um, and now I'm a, you know, a working actor, like, I, I'll go, I'll go anywhere.

• 1:22:24Adam Friedland?

Is he like a general on set? How's he, how's he running that show?

• 1:22:29Speaker 03

  Oh, he's so-

• 1:22:29Adam Friedland?

  He's like a, he's like a, he's like Patton or something.

• 1:22:32Speaker 03

  He's so-

• 1:22:33Adam Friedland?

  That's what I imagine.

• 1:22:33Speaker 03

  He's so good.

• 1:22:35Adam Friedland?

  He is.

• 1:22:35Speaker 03

  He's so good.

• 1:22:37Adam Friedland?

How's he, he doesn't lose his cool, I imagine?

• 1:22:39Speaker 03

No, no, I mean, I don't, he's like, um, he's like firing on a different wavelength. He's like-

• 1:22:47Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:22:47Speaker 03

  He's like Shohei.

• 1:22:49Adam Friedland?

  Right.

• 1:22:50Speaker 03

He, he, he, he sees everything happen before it happens.

• 1:22:55Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:22:55Speaker 03

Or also, you know, just trusts the beauty of creativity.

• 1:22:59Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:00Speaker 03

And hires the best people, and lets them paint.

• 1:23:03Adam Friedland?

  Uh huh, wow.

• 1:23:05Speaker 03

Inside structure, inside fucking, like, reality. Cause that's the other thing, he builds reality, I mean-

• 1:23:12Adam Friedland?

He makes, yeah, and he also does everything in camera, it's-

• 1:23:15Speaker 03

  Everything.

• 1:23:16Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:16Speaker 03

  The whole thing.

• 1:23:17Adam Friedland?

With like a fucking IMAX, like-

• 1:23:19Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:23:19Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:20Speaker 03

We were in, we were just all over the world.

• 1:23:22Adam Friedland?

So he's basically like Scotty, right?

• 1:23:25Speaker 03

  He's like-

• 1:23:26Adam Friedland?

  He's the Scotty of movies.

• 1:23:27Speaker 03

  He's the Scotty Bowman.

• 1:23:29Adam Friedland?

Yeah, the Scotty Bowman of movies.

• 1:23:30Speaker 03

  Of movies.

• 1:23:30Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 1:23:31Speaker 03

  He is.

• 1:23:31Adam Friedland?

  When you saw, wait.

• 1:23:33Speaker 03

Because I once sat in a sauna with Scotty Bowman.

• 1:23:36Adam Friedland?

Really? What was it, what was, what did he look like, there?

• 1:23:39Speaker 03

He had a towel just under his-

• 1:23:41Adam Friedland?

  I would imagine so.

• 1:23:42Speaker 03

  Right up to the-

• 1:23:42Adam Friedland?

Just right, right up to the-

• 1:23:43Speaker 03

  Right up to the top.

• 1:23:44Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:45Speaker 03

Okay, so he looked like he was in fighting shape.

• 1:23:48Adam Friedland?

Are you gonna see him this weekend?

• 1:23:49Speaker 03

I, I hope to God I do. I hope to God, cause you know, I was a kid and insane when I met him.

• 1:23:55Adam Friedland?

You were being a bad boy.

• 1:23:55Speaker 03

And he, he sat and he talked to me about, uh- He, my dad, and my dad being a teacher and what high school, he would always talk about things that had nothing to do with what I think he was trying to get you to understand.

• 1:24:12Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 1:24:13Speaker 03

  In a very beautiful way.

• 1:24:15Adam Friedland?

  He like guides you.

• 1:24:16Speaker 03

And I think that that's how I would, the comparison, Chris.

• 1:24:20Adam Friedland?

  That was a good pull?

• 1:24:21Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:24:22Adam Friedland?

  Wow.

• 1:24:23Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:24:23Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 1:24:24Speaker 03

  Yeah, like in the ether.

• 1:24:25Adam Friedland?

In terms of like direct, so he was directing you to some kind of Scotty Bogdan.

• 1:24:28Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 1:24:29Adam Friedland?

That is one of the dopest things I've ever heard.

• 1:24:30Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 1:24:31Adam Friedland?

I love it when sports stuff is expressed that way.

• 1:24:33Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 1:24:34Adam Friedland?

Yeah, like in a different, wow.

• 1:24:36Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:24:36Adam Friedland?

I love fucking sports, dude. But you should, are we gonna go to games together?

• 1:24:40Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 1:24:40Adam Friedland?

  Can we go?

• 1:24:41Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:24:41Adam Friedland?

  Are we boys?

• 1:24:42Speaker 03

  I think so, yeah.

• 1:24:44Adam Friedland?

  Can I just close?

• 1:24:45Speaker 03

I didn't know how this was gonna go, by the way.

• 1:24:48Adam Friedland?

No, no, I'm a, I'm a great, I'm just great to be around.

• 1:24:50Speaker 03

Good, what camp did you go to?

• 1:24:52Adam Friedland?

  Jewish.

• 1:24:53Speaker 03

  No, I know, which one?

• 1:24:55Adam Friedland?

  Uh, Maidanek?

• 1:24:56Speaker 03

  Where?

• 1:24:57Adam Friedland?

Uh, I think it was in southern Germany or Poland, I forget where.

• 1:25:04Adam Friedland?

  Where was Maidanek?

• 1:25:05Speaker 03

  Wow.

• 1:25:07Speaker 03

  Not.

• 1:25:08Adam Friedland?

I wanna ask you one last question. Do you think a girlfriend will ever like, like, respect you if she doesn't feel like you could, if you could kill her with your bare hands?

• 1:25:18Speaker 03

  No, yeah, you're right.

• 1:25:19Adam Friedland?

  So she, she, that, really?

• 1:25:21Speaker 03

  That's always in the back.

• 1:25:22Adam Friedland?

Not that you wanna do it.

• 1:25:23Speaker 03

It's always in the back of her head.

• 1:25:25Adam Friedland?

But just that you want to like, if there's just.

• 1:25:27Speaker 03

And you know when I see that situation?

• 1:25:29Adam Friedland?

  And if a guy can't.

• 1:25:30Speaker 03

I have compassion for her because I know she's totally not fulfilled because she doesn't feel safe.

• 1:25:40Adam Friedland?

What do you mean, there's other types of?

• 1:25:45Speaker 03

Which is why I come back to it, yeah, and you know what?

• 1:25:48Adam Friedland?

And you're gonna teach me how to kill?

• 1:25:49Speaker 03

  We're gonna grapple.

• 1:25:51Adam Friedland?

  Not right now, no, don't.

• 1:25:52Speaker 03

Stand up so everybody can see the word.

• 1:25:54Adam Friedland?

Five ten, five ten, and he went league too, everyone, John Avery.

• 1:26:42Speaker 07
