Jason Camisa is in studio. Of course, we're gonna talk a little bit about the Cybertruck. We're also talking about the Alpine A110 that I'm handing off to him. He's telling a story about what happens when you crash your car on the way to featuring it and Jay Leno's Garage. We're getting a fleet update from Mr. Camisa as well as a look inside what's happening in his Hagerty show. And somehow, he sneaks

• 1:22Matt Farah?

in like a 20-minute commercial for insurance. Jason Cammisa is on today's episode of the Smoking Tire Podcast.

• 1:32Matt Farah?

Um, I had- What is Hannah doing to you in your sleep? I swear to God, I swear to God, I was injured from snuggling. Big spoon- What camera can I look at and give you dirty work? My left arm from being big spoon with Hannah for, you know, overnight, whatever it was, six hours, I ended up with like-

• 1:51Speaker 01

I think I actually hurt my rotator cuff from trying to spoon my wife for like months on end on the left side and it just slowly like eroded in.

• 1:58Matt Farah?

Well Hannah and I, people talk about sides of the bed, you can't do that. I have to, I have to, I get injured if I'm only on one side of the bed. You have to like rotisserie and swat? We change, we rotate. Can I just point out that I'm a liar?

• 2:10Speaker 02

A lot older than both of you guys.

• 2:11Matt Farah?

  But you look fabulous.

• 2:12Speaker 02

  Oh, just, just, yeah, right.

• 2:14Matt Farah?

You look older than you. If people stood the two of us next to each other and said who's older.

• 2:18Speaker 02

Do a vote online, see, you know, like a poll.

• 2:19Matt Farah?

Zach and I are the same age. That's what people don't believe. People think.

• 2:23Speaker 02

I thought he was younger than you.

• 2:23Matt Farah?

People think he could be my child.

• 2:25Speaker 02

  Someone thought that.

• 2:26Matt Farah?

  Someone did think that.

• 2:27Speaker 02

  No. Yes.

• 2:28Matt Farah?

I mean, look, some one one time.

• 2:31Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 2:31Matt Farah?

  Right?

• 2:32Speaker 02

  There's someone who's always.

• 2:33Matt Farah?

I could spin that, but like, of all the people we met, that's the stupidest one.

• 2:37Speaker 02

He does look younger than you.

• 2:40Matt Farah?

You know what I mean? Like, someone's gotta be the dumbest one. It's that guy.

• 2:43Speaker 02

Or the one with the worst vision.

• 2:46Matt Farah?

  That's my.

• 2:47Speaker 02

Really? You look great. And I'm like, you need an ophthalmologist, code red.

• 2:50Matt Farah?

Don't attribute to stupidity that which you could attribute to blindness.

• 2:55Speaker 02

Bad vision and stupidity and, uh, yeah. You look so great.

• 3:00Matt Farah?

That's the next level of like, you know, don't attribute to malice what could be stupidity. It's like, what don't attribute stupidity what could be blindness? Let's take that one to its logical conclusion. Don't attribute to blindness, uh, to what could be.

• 3:13Speaker 02

  Obliviousness.

• 3:14Matt Farah?

  There you go.

• 3:15Speaker 02

Which is, which is purposeful blindness.

• 3:17Matt Farah?

And what could be oblivious, uh, what could be attributed to the fact that, uh, it's actually a cat you're talking to. You're no longer talking to a human.

• 3:23Speaker 02

Fucking Californian at that point. You live in your own little world and you're shocked that there are other people in your bubble. Obliviousness, it's inadvertent, um, oh, fuck. There's a term that I always use, you know, look, we're New Yorkers, so we can make fun of.

• 3:37Matt Farah?

We're New Yorkers living in California, which makes us better than everybody.

• 3:40Speaker 02

Exactly. It's our job to make fun of all these people and hate them all.

• 3:44Matt Farah?

Have you ever found that being a New Yorker and living and working in California is like having a game genie on the back of your NES video game? A New York work ethic in California is a cheat code.

• 3:55Speaker 02

  It is a cheat code.

• 3:56Matt Farah?

It is a very straightforward cheat code.

• 3:58Speaker 02

  Is this being broad, man?

• 3:59Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 4:00Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 4:01Matt Farah?

I've been saying it for years.

• 4:02Speaker 02

  You're totally right.

• 4:03Matt Farah?

  Of course it is.

• 4:05Speaker 02

And the thing is, I go back, I always think I'm such an asshole. Like, there's so many times throughout the course of every, like, week that I'm like, oh, Jason, you're such a dick. And then I go, I was just in New York.

• 4:14Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 4:15Speaker 02

And I realize it's just not me.

• 4:16Matt Farah?

  No, you have standards.

• 4:18Speaker 02

Operate, well, I operate at the same speed with the same standards as a whole culture of people, like, what, 16 million of them in New York? And I come back here and I'm like, it's not me.

• 4:26Matt Farah?

They're the enemy. A, a person I know well just got a new job at a company that's a very Midwest company.

• 4:34Speaker 02

I work for one of those.

• 4:35Matt Farah?

And they were literally told to slow down.

• 4:40Speaker 02

I was told, Gene Jennings told me to tone down the toilet water was the quote. Cause I walked in, you know, I'm like, you know, an Italian shower. Dracar or whatever the hell I was wearing. And she was like, tone down the toilet water, kid. You're not in Brooklyn anymore.

• 4:54Matt Farah?

It's a great line though. That's funny. That's really good.

• 4:57Speaker 02

She was good with the lines.

• 4:58Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 4:58Speaker 02

But yeah, no, I worked, I mean, I moved to Ann Arbor and was there and I was like, what? And I had lived in Pittsburgh before that. So like, I had a soft landing into, into the actual Midwest. They did not know what to make of me and vice versa.

• 5:10Matt Farah?

  In Ann Arbor.

• 5:11Speaker 02

  Yeah, Ann Arbor. It's pronounced.

• 5:13Matt Farah?

How did anybody end up in Ann? I mean, I guess to be close to this.

• 5:16Speaker 02

David Davis, editor in chief of Car and Driver, was in New York. Car and Driver's in Manhattan, which is actually the stupidest place on earth to put a car magazine.

• 5:23Matt Farah?

Cause you don't want to drive.

• 5:24Speaker 02

It is. I mean, I did a, for, for two years, me and Tom Morningstar and Gene Sanchez did a car YouTube channel from 419 Park Avenue. You don't want to do that, right? So he got sick of the, everyone was getting sick of like the homeless people sleeping on the stoop at the, of the office and whatever else. And his, this is crazy story, true story. David's mother was in an old age home in Toledo, Ohio. And he was like, well, the halfway point between Toledo and Detroit, the car companies was Ann Arbor. And so, and of course he was a stuck up twat anyway. So he was like, well, and it's also a bougie college town. I'll move, car driver there. And that's how it wound up there. And then Gene, Gene was a taxi driver in Ann Arbor slash crash test dummy, basically at, at Chrysler

• 6:08Speaker 02

Proving Grounds. And then she was, she joined Car and Driver and then left for automobile.

• 6:13Matt Farah?

Wow. And, and Ann Arbor never got any more interesting because of it. I mean.

• 6:20Speaker 02

I was there for a year and a half straight. And then I left, moved to California and then spent the next six years going back.

• 6:26Matt Farah?

Dude, writing about, look, maybe in the, when did they move there? In the eighties, right? It must've been the eighties.

• 6:31Speaker 02

No, it was early in that.

• 6:32Matt Farah?

Earlier than that? Okay, so. At that time, communication, a little slower.

• 6:37Speaker 02

  Right.

• 6:38Matt Farah?

And, you know, I suppose the, um, the focus on domestic automobiles a little heavier. So, there's a, there's a rational argument aside for the mu- that that, that being close to Detroit maybe made some sense.

• 6:50Speaker 02

Or maybe in, and not like, not an hour away, which by the way, turns into a seven hour drive when it snows, which it does for six months straight.

• 6:58Matt Farah?

Yeah, yeah, you could have just as easily been in Detroit.

• 7:00Speaker 02

But his mom was in Toledo.

• 7:01Matt Farah?

Yeah, yeah, sure, sure, sure. But, uh, but having to do automotive journalism in Michigan is as dumb as having to do automotive journalism in New York City.

• 7:11Speaker 02

  And, let's qualify this.

• 7:13Matt Farah?

  It really is.

• 7:13Speaker 02

For people who don't work in the, in, in the industry, one of the most important things is photography, you do in the magazine, and we would have to drive four, five, six, 10 hours just to get somewhere where you could take a single fucking picture once. Also, weather, because that would screw everything up, also roads. How do you evaluate a car?

• 7:31Matt Farah?

  There are no corners!

• 7:32Speaker 02

  Or hills.

• 7:32Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 7:33Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 7:34Matt Farah?

  It's crazy.

• 7:35Speaker 02

It was funny, there's, there's a woman that worked for automobile.

• 7:38Matt Farah?

People building cars who have never left Detroit for people reviewing cars that can only review them in Detroit.

• 7:44Speaker 02

  In Detroit, yeah.

• 7:44Matt Farah?

You have this Ouroboros of shit, of shit product.

• 7:48Speaker 02

It was, I, so I moved to Ann Arbor and I was like, where, is there not a single hill? And this, this Ann Arborite who worked for us, who hated.

• 7:54Matt Farah?

  Ma'am, where's the hill?

• 7:56Speaker 02

She was like, oh my God, you gotta go out to this road and there's a big hill. Total elevation change? Four feet. And I'm like, I just moved from Pittsburgh. I'm like, no, no, no, hill is like, at least, we'll call a hill at least maybe 40, if not 400.

• 8:09Matt Farah?

  Sure.

• 8:09Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 8:10Matt Farah?

  Hill.

• 8:10Speaker 02

  Four feet.

• 8:11Matt Farah?

  Four.

• 8:11Speaker 02

  Oh, and there's a curve. No, there's a 90 degree curve.

• 8:13Matt Farah?

  That's a mound.

• 8:14Speaker 02

Because everything's on a grid, so you get a 90 degree curve, and no.

• 8:16Matt Farah?

It was flat, but then Jim, Jim buried a real big cow there, now it's a hill.

• 8:22Speaker 02

And it, we're, he acted as fertilizer and fertilized the bacteria, which pushed the ground up by a whole inch.

• 8:28Matt Farah?

  God, that's just terrible.

• 8:30Speaker 02

Not my, uh, so anyway, so, back to New Yorkers and, and LA.

• 8:34Matt Farah?

That's why we think we're better than everybody.

• 8:35Speaker 02

  We are.

• 8:35Matt Farah?

I mean, it's just. Sorry, sorry, we had things like hills and sunshine to drive cars in.

• 8:44Speaker 02

Let's be real about this. We have my whole family, which is enough to ruin most of New York, but also rats.

• 8:51Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 8:51Speaker 02

  For example.

• 8:52Matt Farah?

Oh, yeah, no. There's a flip side. That piss smell is real.

• 8:55Speaker 02

  It is real.

• 8:56Matt Farah?

  It's real.

• 8:56Speaker 02

  We have this MTA.

• 8:58Matt Farah?

  I wasn't, I wasn't a New York City person, though. I couldn't, huh?

• 9:03Speaker 02

  Oh, you mean?

• 9:04Matt Farah?

I was a, I was, yeah, Westchester person, yeah.

• 9:06Speaker 02

Brooklyn originally, and then from five on, five and a half years old on, I was in Hastings on Hudson, which is-

• 9:13Matt Farah?

  That's Westchester.

• 9:14Speaker 02

  Westchester.

• 9:15Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 9:15Speaker 02

Upstate. What are you going upstate? There gonna be fucking cows over there? No.

• 9:18Matt Farah?

No, I'm mad up, the word upstate. I lived 12 miles north of Manhattan. You could leave my house and drive for eight hours north and still be in New York. Yeah, yeah, and I lived upstate.

• 9:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 9:31Matt Farah?

Imagine, imagine living in Encinitas and people are like, oh, yeah, upstate.

• 9:35Speaker 02

  Upstate.

• 9:36Matt Farah?

  What the fuck?

• 9:36Speaker 02

The second you leave Manhattan, you're upstate. Bronx, upstate. Riverdale, upstate.

• 9:42Matt Farah?

That's how, that's how important New York City is to its-

• 9:46Speaker 02

  To itself.

• 9:49Speaker 02

None of your listeners are in New York or Michigan.

• 9:50Matt Farah?

Have I told you the fucking, my, my favorite New York story occurred in Los Angeles. There's a place in Santa Monica called New York Bagel and Deli.

• 9:58Speaker 02

  Oh, no.

• 9:59Matt Farah?

And I, and I went, and I walked in, and I, I was instantly taken to New York. It wasn't, it wasn't an LA version of a New York bagel, a deli. It was an actual New York bagel deli.

• 10:13Speaker 02

  Right.

• 10:14Matt Farah?

And I was like, holy shit. And the guy in the back is wearing a Yankee hat, and I go, I go, this is awesome, man. I'm, I'm super stoked. I'm from New York, too. He goes, oh, yeah, where? I go, Westchester, and he goes, oh.

• 10:26Speaker 02

And he rolled his eyes at me.

• 10:28Matt Farah?

So, no, you knew he was real. In Santa Monica, I wasn't New York enough for this guy.

• 10:33Speaker 02

I think we might have discussed this like 10 years ago when I did your podcast for the first time. But I moved to San Francisco, and I found West Brooklyn Pizza. So, I walk in, and I'm like, excuse me, could you explain to me what West Brooklyn Pizza means? And he's like, what do you mean? And I'm like, is this West Coast Brooklyn Pizza, or is this like Western Brooklyn?

• 10:52Matt Farah?

  Part of Brooklyn.

• 10:53Speaker 02

Bay Ridge, or even worse, Staten Island. Because this is the Staten Island Pizza, then maybe.

• 10:58Matt Farah?

  West Brooklyn is the river.

• 11:00Speaker 02

  Okay, yeah.

• 11:00Matt Farah?

  Kind of.

• 11:01Speaker 02

  Well, the Arizona Bridge.

• 11:02Matt Farah?

That's like, uh, born and raised in South Detroit. Like, oh, so that's in Canada?

• 11:07Speaker 02

That's also true. So the guy's looking at me and I'm like, he's like, what's the difference? And I'm like, well, the difference is if I'm expecting West Brooklyn, like Bay Ridge pizza, and you give me West Coast pizza, I'm gonna fucking throw it at you. He goes, I'll break your fucking legs. And I was like, oh, you are from Brooklyn? And he was like, yeah, I'm from Brooklyn. Pizza's amazing.

• 11:24Matt Farah?

Oh, good. Oh, good for that guy. All right. But he could have just answered the question with, yeah, Bay Ridge.

• 11:28Speaker 02

No, he was a sarcastic Brooklyn asshole, which is exactly what I deserved. Yeah, look, right there, Fort Hamilton, Bay Ridge, Fort Hamilton, right at the base of the Arizona Bridge.

• 11:36Matt Farah?

That is West Brooklyn. Yeah. I mean, respect to that guy for defining it so specifically, so far from Brooklyn.

• 11:44Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 11:44Matt Farah?

There's only, there's only so many people that are...

• 11:47Speaker 02

He had a genuine asshole in front of him, torturing him over...

• 11:51Matt Farah?

Right. So we're both assholes. Okay, cool. Cars?

• 11:54Speaker 02

  Cheers to that.

• 11:54Matt Farah?

  Good to meet you. Hello.

• 11:55Speaker 02

  Hi.

• 11:56Matt Farah?

  Welcome back.

• 11:58Speaker 02

  Thanks for having me back.

• 11:58Matt Farah?

I had to fucking lure you here with a French car.

• 12:02Speaker 02

Listen, I think everyone's gonna be surprised that I'm in the same room with you. Because the last time we were all on a podcast together, we were not nice to each other.

• 12:09Matt Farah?

  It was super fun.

• 12:10Speaker 02

I mean, we were, but it was fun. It was fun. And for, can I just say?

• 12:13Matt Farah?

  Podcast theater.

• 12:15Speaker 02

I have always hated that fucking Cybertruck. It had nothing to do...

• 12:21Speaker 02

It is, it is such a double, double whammy.

• 12:23Matt Farah?

Zach, you can check that off. When I saw you, when we had coffee two weeks ago, and you said that, and I said, I was like, LOL, Jason hates the Cybertruck and regrets the video. Zach says, will he say that on camera?

• 12:34Speaker 02

Yeah, okay, wait, wait, let me, let me. It's such a double whammy kicking the dick that I'm still getting so much shit about this. Because, okay...

• 12:41Matt Farah?

They gave you a journalism award.

• 12:43Speaker 02

  That is true.

• 12:44Matt Farah?

  They did.

• 12:44Speaker 02

I did win an award for that.

• 12:45Matt Farah?

They gave you a journalism award for it.

• 12:46Speaker 02

And I fucking deserved it. Like, it doesn't...

• 12:48Matt Farah?

  You should, you should Gallagher.

• 12:51Speaker 02

Let me just make this very professional for a second. It doesn't matter whether I like a car or hate a car, right?

• 12:56Matt Farah?

  No.

• 12:57Speaker 02

It's my job as a bit player, you are a journalist also, you're a journalist also. You're a bit player. Who is the intended audience? What is this car's intended purpose? And does it, does it reach that?

• 13:05Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 13:06Speaker 02

Whether I like the car or hate the car doesn't factor in at all.

• 13:10Matt Farah?

You did say you don't like the car. You just didn't say it loudly and clearly enough.

• 13:14Speaker 02

I also apparently didn't say loudly and clear enough. That this is not a full product review. I only drove the goddamn thing on location at Sonoma Raceway, other than driving it once on the road. This was an engineering story. And this, they gave me access to the engineers. And I was telling, the amazing part of the Cybertruck is all the engineering that went into it. The not amazing part of it is, A, the dickbags would buy it.

• 13:37Speaker 01

  The truck parts.

• 13:37Speaker 02

B, the way it looks. But that wasn't the scope of that video.

• 13:43Matt Farah?

I think it was pretty much. I think it was presented as a review and received as a review by pretty much everybody.

• 13:48Speaker 02

  It was.

• 13:49Matt Farah?

You could find print that it's an engineering study or something, but I...

• 13:54Speaker 02

But the message was barely delivered and definitely not received.

• 13:58Matt Farah?

I would agree on both of those.

• 13:59Speaker 02

And look, as a product, it is what it is. Like what...

• 14:02Matt Farah?

Oh, it's a shit pile. It's a straight shit pile.

• 14:05Speaker 02

  And, and let me say...

• 14:06Matt Farah?

We made a salad with one.

• 14:08Speaker 01

Can I just say? Can I just say that the video title?

• 14:10Speaker 02

  It did.

• 14:11Speaker 01

Jason, the video title is exclusive 2024 Tesla Cybertruck full review and drag race. It is not engineering study.

• 14:18Speaker 02

Hey, fair enough. I don't, look, it's been so long now and I will not watch that video. It did cut the shit out of me. Like, I did actually slice my own...

• 14:25Matt Farah?

Yeah, I believe you. Just like we did with multiple vegetables.

• 14:30Speaker 02

I, give me a Rivian. Actually, give me a Raptor R, because I'm that much of a...

• 14:35Matt Farah?

Oh, you really are a dickbag.

• 14:37Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 14:37Matt Farah?

  That's a dickbag vehicle.

• 14:39Speaker 02

If I wanted an electric truck, Lightning is wonderful. A Raptor, a Rivian...

• 14:43Matt Farah?

The Lightning is the best electric work truck. The Rivian's the best electric recreational truck.

• 14:48Speaker 02

And the Cybertruck is the best what? I'm gonna let you do this, because I'm gonna shut... It's the best, it's the best rolling Sieg Heil?

• 14:56Speaker 01

  It's the swastika.

• 14:59Speaker 02

Listen, you, I don't get political.

• 15:00Matt Farah?

It's the best tool for running over protesters if that's what you want to do.

• 15:04Speaker 02

Well, just slice them into pieces.

• 15:06Matt Farah?

  Yes, it would.

• 15:06Speaker 02

  Almost intentionally.

• 15:08Matt Farah?

  It would.

• 15:09Speaker 02

  Anyway.

• 15:10Matt Farah?

  It's more like a, I would say it's more like a mandolin.

• 15:13Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 15:13Matt Farah?

  It's like a rolling mandolin.

• 15:14Speaker 02

When you see the, the chefs and the shit's just flying.

• 15:17Matt Farah?

Some chef somewhere will, will tell me what, what tool would most similarly do to a vegetable that a cyber truck would.

• 15:26Speaker 02

  Cause it's half.

• 15:26Matt Farah?

I would, you know what would be awesome? If someone actually made like a scale little cyber truck to, with important, you know, razor blade like front edges on like some kind of a mini crash test dummy track and they just sent it at vegetables. I would watch that fucking TikTok channel all, all day, all day.

• 15:47Speaker 01

You need an R C, an R C cyber truck can just, you know, drive it towards pumpkin.

• 15:50Matt Farah?

  Oh, man, yeah.

• 15:51Speaker 01

  Perfect for Halloween.

• 15:52Matt Farah?

  That'd be fun.

• 15:53Speaker 01

Do you think, it's a question for you, Jason. Uh, cause when I drove the cyber truck, I was impressed by this nearby wire and I just thought, okay, that is a cool technology. But I think the truck is so bad at being a vehicle in so many ways. Like there's the headlights accessing the bed, seeing behind you, stuff like that. If they had put that tech in a Model S, would that have leveled up the Model S in a way that would have reinvigorated that? Or do you think it would have not gotten the attention of having a whole new model?

• 16:19Speaker 02

I think it wouldn't have gotten the attention. I mean, Model S is, let's face it, 700 years old at this point. Yeah. Let me, let me also say, but I, I'm a firm believer that Model 3 is the best car on planet earth. The, the Highland Model 3 is near perfect. Um, and this is journalist Jason speaking like in terms of just doing.

• 16:35Matt Farah?

I drove, I drove it. It's actually quite lovely. I thought it, the Model 3 performance, I thought was really, really nice. It was great.

• 16:42Speaker 02

Shockingly better than the last car.

• 16:43Matt Farah?

Yeah, yeah, I know it is. On a racetrack, it's a fucking good time.

• 16:47Speaker 02

  It's a really good time.

• 16:48Matt Farah?

  Yeah, it slides awesome.

• 16:49Speaker 02

And it genuinely did beat the M3 in that compare. So I did a compare with the M3 and we set out. We were, I'm like, I got so much shit before, between the cyber truck and then I did a drag race video where the M, the M3 beat the Tesla and all the fucking Tesla people wanted me dead. And so on that one, I'm like, you know what we're gonna do? We're not even gonna call this an Icons. We're gonna call this a Tread to Tread, which was making fun of the old head to head.

• 17:10Matt Farah?

  Oh, yes.

• 17:11Speaker 02

And I just, and I started the episode by like, I'm not gonna get you to convert between ICE and EV. That'd be like getting you to try to change your religion using logic. So here's the deal. I'm just gonna, I'm gonna ask five questions. And I'm gonna answer them in order to say, which one should you buy? And of course, I write this in the script and then Randy Pope's in the background. Unscripted is like, well, it depends on whether you're a right wing nut job or a libtard. And we all fucking burst out laughing. So we left that in the episode. We recorded that.

• 17:38Matt Farah?

I bet that went over well in the comments.

• 17:40Speaker 02

It actually did. It shut everyone up because it's Randy. Randy could do, Randy could actually kill a pedestrian. And people were like, but Randy Pope did it. I'd be glad to die by the hands of Randy. So I really don't like, I don't subscribe to the you like a car company or you don't like a car company. You like a whatever. I just, I leave that out of it. Like, I can say with some degree of certainty, Audi has never built a car that drives well. But it doesn't mean, it doesn't matter whether I like it or don't like it, right? I will evaluate every new Audi as a new car.

• 18:09Matt Farah?

We could debate that. I've liked a couple of Audis.

• 18:12Speaker 02

  I've liked them.

• 18:13Matt Farah?

We are also brought to you today by Smalls. Boy, do I love Smalls. I love my cats. They basically run my entire non-car social life. They certainly run my house. They sleep in bed with me and I will do anything for my kittens. And fortunately, they're all pretty healthy. But one day, and we've had senior cats in the past, I know that they will need super specialized food. But until then, I want to give them the best. And that's where Smalls comes in. Smalls cat food is protein-packed recipes made with preservative-free ingredients that you'd find in your own fridge, delivered right to your door.

• 21:04Matt Farah?

That's why cats.com named Smalls their best overall cat food. And now with my offer, you can get 60% off your first order plus free shipping. Head over to smalls.com/tire for a limited time only. My cats love this Smalls food. They go right over it. Before I was feeding them a well-known sort of pseudo-hallistic brand, but they really like the Smalls better. I love that there's no preservatives. I love that it's high protein. So my cats develop that lean muscle and they don't get super fat from all the carbs because a carb and filler-heavy diet, your cat could put on weight.

• 21:44Matt Farah?

And, and what is good about these protein wet canned food diets is you get them on the cycle of eating at certain times of day. They're not grazing all day. That helps feed their kitten instincts. It makes them want to hunt, catch, kill, eat, groom, and sleep. And you can have a healthy, every single day cycle with a fabulous routine where your cats have energy when you're up and going to sleep when you're going to sleep. After, after switching to Smalls, 88% of cat owners reported overall health improvements. It's a big deal. And now for a limited time only, as a Smoking Tire listener, you can get 60% off your first Smalls order plus free shipping when

• 22:26Matt Farah?

you head over to Smalls.com/tire. That's 60% off at Smalls.com/tire. Again, one more time, Smalls.com/tire. And now, back to the show.

• 22:42Speaker 02

  B7 RS4, I like. I thought particularly well.

• 22:45Matt Farah?

Uh, I, I thought it, I thought it, uh, it wasn't universally, like it probably wasn't very good on a racetrack, but it would be lovely on a road trip or, you know, up to six or seven tenths or whatever.

• 22:56Speaker 02

  Exactly.

• 22:58Matt Farah?

  I mean, the R8s.

• 23:00Speaker 02

  No, no.

• 23:01Matt Farah?

You don't think the R8s, any of the R8s drive well?

• 23:03Speaker 02

  The original stick shift V8.

• 23:07Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 23:07Speaker 02

Was the best of the bunch. The V10s were too assy and uncontrollable. The V8 was nice, little bit understeery, you could back into a corner.

• 23:14Matt Farah?

  I mean, I say this meanwhile, I've, I've, the only press car I've ever crashed is a R8 V10.

• 23:19Speaker 02

They were, they were uncontrollable. They really were.

• 23:22Matt Farah?

I, I, I think my crash was my fault and not the car's fault.

• 23:25Speaker 02

What kind of a turn of the turn you were doing. It's a man who retracts that immediately.

• 23:29Matt Farah?

But, uh, I've driven other R8s on track. I would not call them uncontrollable.

• 23:34Speaker 02

They were unpredictable. I should, maybe not uncontrollable, like a C7, ZR1 is, but unpredictable. They were just on, they were not.

• 23:43Matt Farah?

They weren't the best track cars, but again, as road cars, they are so nice.

• 23:48Speaker 02

Is amazing. Like a Huracan, a Montez, like unbelievable.

• 23:50Matt Farah?

Right. Huracans are better on racetracks. Audis are great on the road, though. The R8s are really good on the road.

• 23:56Speaker 02

Right. I would take a manual stick shift R8 and I, the, the engine's charismatic enough and the car looks good enough that I'd forgive the totally dead steering and some of the other stuff.

• 24:05Matt Farah?

Yeah. They're not like, again, not my favorite, but, but how about, how about this? The 20.

• 24:11Matt Farah?

Fifteen sixteen S eight. Was a fine automobile, five hundred and eighty horsepower. The thing was like low three second to sixty. It had a had a lot of tech, but still had some real buttons. It was before it went full spaceship. First Audi to have the fucking LED interior, but before they went overboard with it. That was that. That is an excellent Audi.

• 24:40Speaker 02

I'd have to go back to my notes.

• 24:41Matt Farah?

I mean, I'm sure there's something not to like about it, but that is a superior automobile.

• 24:46Speaker 02

Final chassis tuning is something that Audi has almost never gotten right. So steering calibration, brake pedal calibration, programming the the transmission and throttle to work together. It's that level of stuff that they don't get right. Interior wise, yes. But I think that was that was before the generation of cars that had the electric door latches.

• 25:05Matt Farah?

  Yeah, that one.

• 25:06Speaker 02

Like the door latches on the next gen that wouldn't open.

• 25:08Matt Farah?

  Oh, I don't.

• 25:09Speaker 02

So you park one of those cars on a. When you pull the door latch, it sends a solenoid a half a second command to unlock. And that's it. And if you don't push the door open hard, I mean, you're on a hill, the door won't open. So you pull it and you pull it and you pull it. It's that level shit that fucking irritates me. But my point in saying that was that I will judge a new Audi based on a standard with a clean slate. When a new car comes in and I judge the Cybertruck in in that way. And it was the engineering that I was looking at, right? Again, I don't think I've still driven a Cybertruck on the road more than a couple of miles. I don't need to.

• 25:42Matt Farah?

  You don't need to.

• 25:43Speaker 02

I don't need to at this point, right? I knew I understood the tech that went into it and I did that. It's it's enough.

• 25:47Matt Farah?

You can tell how a car steers, rides and handles in five minutes. You don't need to.

• 25:50Speaker 02

And I did drive it for five minutes on the road. So it's.

• 25:52Matt Farah?

Yeah, and you drove it on a racetrack. So like you also.

• 25:55Speaker 02

Totally not relevant to what that car does.

• 25:57Matt Farah?

No, it's not. But like to go from that back to the road is easy.

• 26:01Speaker 02

  That's true. That is true.

• 26:02Matt Farah?

It's easier than saying, I've driven it for five minutes on the road. Now let me assume what it's like on a racetrack. Because you can't go the other way.

• 26:08Speaker 02

Right. That is a good point.

• 26:09Matt Farah?

And by the way, when I had a racetrack, because I did the testing for Performance Electric Vehicle of the Year for Road and Track last year, I liked the Ioniq 5N better on the racetrack. It was faster. But I did like some things about the Model 3 better. The low cowl, the ability to put the steering wheel wherever the fuck you want and not block anything. That, that like chassis slider thing that you could switch the power and brake bias to make it like real-time dynamic changes, like, right.

• 26:38Speaker 02

To me, what the Model 3 does best is just living with it, right? It's the, the way the infotainment system works, the way your phone works as a key, the app that's on the phone, just the little, the supercharging network. I mean, once you live with a Tesla, you can't, none of the other EVs compare, and that's the problem. That is, to me, as a human being, frustrating as fuck. Because there are a lot of things about Tesla and its image and whatever else that I don't really like. And I don't like cars that are rolling political statements one way or another. That irritates me, because I have to say to people, people ask me, like, what car should I have? And I'll look, I'll ask them what their needs are and ask them what their budgets are and what their drive cycles are and what it looks like. And I'll say to them, without question, the best car for you right now is a Model 3.

• 27:22Speaker 02

And then I know exactly what's coming next. I'm like, not saying you're gonna have one, I'm saying that is the match. And if you don't want that, here are the alternatives. It could be a I4, the i5, whatever. None of them come close. In terms of the actual ownership.

• 27:36Matt Farah?

Uh, I think if people really need to use public charging all the time.

• 27:41Speaker 02

  They mostly don't.

• 27:42Matt Farah?

They mostly don't. I mean, I, I made a, I made a whole fucking thing about public charging in my Taycan and blah, blah, blah, which by the way, I drove across the country with no plan and it was totally fine.

• 27:53Speaker 02

  Totally fine.

• 27:53Matt Farah?

Totally fine. Uh, it's been totally fine the whole time, every time I've needed it, but it's rare. And 95% of the time, I'm charging once a week at my own house.

• 28:05Speaker 02

I drive an E-Golf with 100 miles of range.

• 28:07Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 28:08Speaker 02

And I charge that once every couple of days. I don't even think about, I think I've DC fast charged that car three times in seven years.

• 28:13Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 28:14Speaker 01

I wonder what the percentage of Tesla owners is that don't own a home with a charger versus other EVs.

• 28:19Matt Farah?

  Probably higher.

• 28:20Speaker 02

I know a lot of people, especially in the area.

• 28:21Matt Farah?

Yeah, it's probably higher for sure.

• 28:22Speaker 02

I mean, you just go to Target, like, there's a, there's a supercharger, huge supercharger bank at one of the Targets, two of them, actually. Just go grocery shopping, and by the time you're done, your car's at 100%.

• 28:32Speaker 01

Yeah, that's what I figured, because, I mean, your average Lyft and Uber driver, not to be disrespectful, but it's California, like, probably doesn't own their home that has a charger.

• 28:38Matt Farah?

Right. By the way, for the record, if there's a fucking EA at a Target, by the way, and you have another EV, and there's enough chargers to satisfy the population, you can do exactly the same thing.

• 28:47Speaker 02

The problem is just the uptime for EA stuff was really bad.

• 28:52Matt Farah?

It's, dude, it's the second, it's, well, here's why. I mean, not, you, you know, you know why, here's one reason why. Tesla made their own hardware to work with their cars.

• 29:01Speaker 02

It's like having a Mac versus a PC.

• 29:02Matt Farah?

It's Apple, right? And EA's is the PC, and the other ones are the PC. Everything has to work with everything.

• 29:07Speaker 02

  Right.

• 29:07Matt Farah?

That's a much harder problem. Then there's third-party hardware manufacturers. The second and third, I think we're now probably, Kyle Connor would kill me if I don't get this right, but I think we're on the third generation of the EA Fast Charger. Now, when you go to a major, they're all 350s. Those 350s.

• 29:26Speaker 02

  Work.

• 29:27Matt Farah?

Work. And they finally have hired enough people where when you, when you go to charging stations, you actually see people there servicing them, cleaning more. And I've not, every once in a while, I'll see one that's down, but I never, it's never like it was in 2021.

• 29:43Speaker 02

  It was.

• 29:44Matt Farah?

  2022.

• 29:44Speaker 02

  Truly a tragedy.

• 29:45Matt Farah?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, it was horrible. It was horrible. But now, it's not now.

• 29:48Speaker 02

Hundreds of times I've supercharged, I've literally never had a single supercharger not work immediately.

• 29:52Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 29:53Speaker 02

And it's just, boom. And it just happened recently.

• 29:55Matt Farah?

That was, was, and probably still is better excluding higher peak speeds that I can get with an 800 volt architecture.

• 30:02Speaker 02

I pulled up to an EV Go DC Fast Charge in my E-Golf next to a friend and a supercharger, and by the time this fucking thing connected to my car, charged my credit card, and started charging, he had already been charging for three and a half minutes and had like, had already gotten 100 miles of range. It was something like ridiculous.

• 30:20Matt Farah?

Well, that's a pretty shit charger. I, I've, I think, as I have plug and charge. Right, which. Plug and charge. Plug and charge, which is where my credit card is, my billing is done through my card, just like Tesla. Right. So, the EA, um, EA, EVgo, uh, and, um, uh, ChargePoint. All of them, if I plug in. It recognizes your. I would say the process takes.

• 30:45Matt Farah?

I mean, realistically, I want to say it takes thirty seconds before power actually starts flowing. That's not. It's roughly the same amount of time it takes to run a credit card, but I don't do anything but plug the card in. Okay. And so, it, and, and it, and I would say that that works ninety-five percent of the time, and the, and when that doesn't, it's, the, the credit card thing works now. So like. That's good. That's good. I don't, I don't have a reason to defend something that doesn't work. The old, as I was, as I told people in, uh, uh, in the original video, I think. When I drove cross-country, the only charger that I found that literally didn't work was owned by Shell. That's funny.

• 31:29Matt Farah?

It was Shell, Shell's new EV, and I think it's like a fu- uh, not like, it's like a psy-op. It's just they put broken chargers all over. It'd be like, see, see? See, you need a cast car. Stupid. Don't believe those libtards. Just to strand people. That's very funny. I mean, I kinda doubt it, but it's. No, it's a coincidence, and that isn't data, but like, it is a funny. Of course they'd have the motivation to do that, yeah. Yeah, if you were Shell, would you want to have like a great electric network that encouraged people to buy EVs? Of course not. Of course not. Oh, boy. So, yeah, anyway, I, I, I agree with you. The, the new Model 3 is a really nice car. Annoyingly. I did just drive a, a client's, I had to pick up a client's new Model Y. Mm-hmm.

• 32:14Matt Farah?

Um, uh, the suspension's still fucking crashy. Is it really? Yeah. That's the one thing they fixed big time on the Model 3. This was still crashy. Now, it had like, whatever the biggest wheels are, now maybe you have to get the little wheels or something, but like, I was like, oh, man, that's a, cause the Model Y is really nice, but it rides like dogshit. Not good. No, the 3 was good. The 3 is really good. The 3 was good, yeah. Uh, the brakes didn't last as long on the track as the, the Ioniq 5N has real brakes. Real brakes. That thing is, have you driven a six N yet? No. It's the same, right? It's gonna be exactly the same. It's the same underneath. Same underneath. Yeah. Yeah. Who knows? You've seen car companies fuck up. I'll tell you what.

• 32:55Matt Farah?

Uh, you, you have, you have a racetrack and a, and a five N. That is a good time. It is a good time, but here's my thing. Guys, we gotta take one more quick break for Delete Me. You've been hearing me talk about Delete Me for a while now. They're still here, still kicking it, and I can say for certain, I use Delete Me. My wife did not use Delete Me, and the amount of spam texts, uh, phone calls, fake phone calls, um, emails and stuff that she gets compared to me is a noticeable difference. Her data is clearly more out there on the data broker websites than mine does.

• 33:36Matt Farah?

So like what happens is we are full of data brokers, right? When you sign up for anything, buy anything, use the internet in a way that people do, your data, your personal data is then sold to data brokers who then use that data to spam you with stuff, right? So Delete Me is a service that you sign up for and you tell them all the information that you want deleted. Seems ironic that you do that, but that's how it works. And then they scrape the entire internet looking for it and forcefully deleting it. And it's not just a one-time service. You sign up for Delete Me, you fill out their questionnaire, and then a couple of days later, they have a report from you about, for you about, uh, what they found, what they deleted,

• 34:20Matt Farah?

and things you might need to personally approve or intervene to have deleted. But then, for me, it's about every month, they continue sending up reports, finding new stuff, new information, things that didn't quite get deleted last time. And over a period of a couple of months, a couple of cycles, your online life gets drastically better. Um, I really like it, and in my own house at least, it absolutely does work. So you can do it too. Take control of your data. Keep your private life private by signing up for Delete Me. Now at a special discount for. For our listeners, get 20% off your Delete Me plan when you go to joindelete.me.com/tire

• 35:01Matt Farah?

and use promo code tire at checkout. The only way to get 20% off is to go to joindelete.me.com/tire, enter code tire at checkout. One more time, joindelete.me.com/tire and then code tire. And now, back to the show.

• 35:19Speaker 02

I don't think anyone is going to. I think it's gonna be a long time before people are tracking EVs. Look, there are Teslas, of course, at track days.

• 35:26Matt Farah?

Yeah, there's that like, is that Tesla Corsa thing still going on?

• 35:29Speaker 02

  I don't know.

• 35:30Matt Farah?

It was at Buttonwillow. It was a Time Attack series because they put superchargers there, so you could...

• 35:35Speaker 02

I just think, for daily transport, this is part of my big problem with the whole EV adoption thing. If, if it's not a better solution, then we shouldn't have it.

• 35:47Matt Farah?

  Sure.

• 35:47Speaker 02

  And on a racetrack-

• 35:48Matt Farah?

That's my problem with EV motorcycles.

• 35:50Speaker 02

Fair point. If on a racetrack, an EV is just not a better solution. Now, for the people who don't give a shit about driving, get all these assholes out of their fucking CVT Subarus that are plugging up every goddamn fast lane in California doing 38 miles an hour. Get them out of these fucking ice cars and put them in an EV where they... I'm sorry, I just hit the camera. My Italian hair is going.

• 36:10Matt Farah?

  Just flail away.

• 36:11Speaker 02

Just get them into some miserable shitbox.

• 36:13Matt Farah?

  Read the sign, fuckhead.

• 36:15Speaker 02

It says, "Don't bang the table."

• 36:17Matt Farah?

What did you think you were doing? You can flail, but don't bang. The audience, when they're listening on their, like, calf, like, eight... Yeah, they're like, they're sitting in their one chair with sunglasses, like, fucking zoned in on Cammisa. At, fucking, a hun- yes, they are, and they comment.

• 36:34Speaker 02

Then I'm sorry. For everything I've said, and especially everything they've said.

• 36:41Speaker 02

Yeah, no, just get these miserable shitboxes off the, off the road. Put them in EVs. I don't think we need to replace 911s with electric vehicles.

• 36:47Matt Farah?

No, and dude, I'm telling you, when you, nothing will make you say that EV sports cars are not necessary. You're gonna text me, you're gonna get in this Alpine to drive back to San Francisco. I guarantee you, you don't get 10 minutes before you text me something to the effect of, "Oh, my God."

• 37:09Speaker 02

Well, see, I have a very high bar. Look at the shitboxes I own and drive on a regular basis.

• 37:15Matt Farah?

This is your kind of car, dude.

• 37:16Speaker 02

I know. And I sold my lease because-

• 37:18Matt Farah?

What if a lease but comfortable?

• 37:20Speaker 02

Well, I sold my lease because it wasn't experienced enough.

• 37:23Matt Farah?

Well, this is, I mean, look, this isn't, this isn't an experience that you wouldn't, don't position this as your super special weekend car. Position this as the best daily of all time.

• 37:33Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 37:35Matt Farah?

It's not super special weekend car, it's best daily of all time.

• 37:37Speaker 02

  Best daily of all time?

• 37:38Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 37:38Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 37:39Matt Farah?

Cause it's, it's fun and speed and pace with seemingly no compromise.

• 37:45Speaker 02

Looks great. First time I've seen one in person was downstairs.

• 37:47Matt Farah?

Looks great. Looks great. And then I just, I just drove it back from our other store to here this morning, my last drive, and as I'm driving, I'm like, it makes me so mad. And we, we've learned, we've, we've got extremely in-depth detail about why that car can't be sold here. And it's not just because Nissan and, and Renault suck. Um, it's because of the unbelted occupant test. It would not pass. The, the shape of the roof would have to be changed for the US market.

• 38:16Speaker 02

To stop them from smashing their heads.

• 38:17Matt Farah?

Because three states in the US don't have seatbelt laws and all cars have to accommodate their fucking needs.

• 38:24Speaker 02

Can I just leave right now?

• 38:25Matt Farah?

Isn't that crazy? Even though the technology 100% exists to make it so the car will not start or run without a belt. Yeah, you could easily put that interlock in and have an exception or a waiver and sell it. Otherwise, it's like totally-

• 38:41Speaker 02

I love how safety obsessed this country is. Meanwhile, every F-150 is basically a six-foot-tall blunt object mass murderer. And, oh, and no one has amper turn signals.

• 38:51Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 38:52Speaker 02

Right, oh, and we can't have good headlights. Oh, but, but god forbid six people-

• 38:56Matt Farah?

We can't have convex mirrors that cover our blind spots.

• 38:59Speaker 02

  However-

• 39:00Matt Farah?

My mandatory mod for all modern Porsches, 100% is Euro mirrors. You go to Suncoast, shout out to them, and you get the European version of your car's mirrors.

• 39:10Speaker 02

Okay, so, I have a story to tell. And actually, it's mirror related. And it's gonna seem self-serving, you're gonna-

• 39:16Matt Farah?

  Now, count me in.

• 39:18Speaker 02

Well, I crashed my fucking car.

• 39:19Matt Farah?

  Oh.

• 39:20Speaker 02

  I crashed my Rover.

• 39:22Matt Farah?

  Oh.

• 39:22Speaker 02

  So, so, alright.

• 39:23Matt Farah?

And you crashed, not you, not you were crashed into? Oh, that's sad.

• 39:27Speaker 02

And it's because of the mirror.

• 39:28Matt Farah?

You're supposed to be a professional, Jason!

• 39:30Speaker 02

Not that picture. This is the good one.

• 39:31Matt Farah?

  No, no, no. No.

• 39:33Speaker 02

No, no, but I'm showing him before. No, that's not before.

• 39:37Speaker 01

This is the one you sent me.

• 39:38Speaker 02

  That's not before.

• 39:39Matt Farah?

It doesn't look, it doesn't look like a before Jason car. That looks like a, a middle, that looks like a somewhere in the middle car.

• 39:46Speaker 02

Show the, show the other one.

• 39:47Speaker 01

  That one's worse.

• 39:48Speaker 02

Yeah, no, that's, that's the one. Okay, hold on. This is, um, that's what I just.

• 39:54Matt Farah?

Oh, front corner, that fender's real crunched in. It actually, it doesn't look horrible, right? Is it horrible? It looks like the hood can be fixed.

• 40:07Speaker 02

The hood was, so the other picture that's actually first is actually the car last week.

• 40:11Matt Farah?

Okay, cool. That fender's probably hard as shit to find.

• 40:14Speaker 02

Leno calls, it's fucking new old stock for sale in the UK. Two hundred dollars.

• 40:20Matt Farah?

  Get out of here!

• 40:21Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 40:21Speaker 02

Seven hundred dollars in shipping, but two hundred bucks for the end. They, they basically, do you remember the opening scene from Ace Ventura? Where he's got the package and it's like, and he's just kicking it and doing whatever? That happened. That guy delivered it to the body shop. So, so Leno calls me.

• 40:36Matt Farah?

  Oh, yeah.

• 40:36Speaker 02

Jay, Leno's people call me and they're like, actually, I think it was Jay himself. He's like, what else you got? And I'm like, that, I've done four episodes, three episodes of Leno. So he did the Sherrock, my Sherrock sixteen valve. Which he, which he seemed moderately interested in.

• 40:49Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 40:50Speaker 02

  A little bit.

• 40:50Matt Farah?

It's not really a Jay car, is it?

• 40:52Speaker 02

No. He did my E thirty because he'd never been in any thirty. He'd never been in a Mark one Volkswagen. He'd never been in any thirty. So he drives my E thirty wagon and he was like, okay, engine smooth, whatever, blah, blah, blah. Moderately interested in that.

• 41:01Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 41:02Speaker 02

Jay's a great guy. I mean, but he, I wish he would say, I fucking hate this car.

• 41:06Matt Farah?

Yeah, I know, he can't do it. He can't do it. I wish he would say to people, I fucking hate you, and he can't do it.

• 41:11Speaker 02

I wish he would do that. No. Off camera, he is a fully rounded human being.

• 41:15Matt Farah?

He is, but he will listen. He, he's so, he's the patience of a saint. He will sit there and smile while people spit the dumbest shit on earth at him for twenty-five minutes. You can't believe it.

• 41:27Speaker 02

My favorite is Jay in the studio after we're done recording, when you get real, actual human being Jay Leno. Oh my God, he's so.

• 41:33Matt Farah?

He came in here on our thousandth episode, fully eating a sandwich and sat down in front of the mic, eating a sandwich, gave no fucks. It was awesome. And proceeded to say something that had to be cut from the show.

• 41:44Speaker 02

He has said some shit to me that I will repeat to anyone because he has that Hollywood image.

• 41:49Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 41:50Speaker 02

And he's, that's all well and good, like, great that he needed to do that.

• 41:52Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 41:53Speaker 02

But that's why I say he's a fully formed human being.

• 41:55Matt Farah?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, but he was interested in the Rover.

• 41:57Speaker 02

Third episode, he did my eight fifty CSI.

• 42:01Matt Farah?

Are you driving these things down to him?

• 42:02Speaker 02

Yeah, I drive them all down. So he loved that car. Yeah, of course. That is a very J car. So then he's like, what else you got? And I'm like, well,

• 42:10Speaker 02

let me bring, have you ever been in a Rover SD1? Absolutely not. That's the Sterling thing. No. Sterling was a Honda. This is a Rover. This is actually a British Leyland product. It was done by Rover Triumph, whatever, blah, blah, blah. Bring it down. Three and a half liter V8. Bring it down. Okay. So I leave my house at like four o'clock in the morning. This thing's gotta be like SEO death J. It's gonna get seven years. So he, but he wants to drive it. I wanted to have this experience, right? And I know he's gonna hate it. Don't care, right? So get in the car at four o'clock in the morning and there, there, the producer had told me they had a pool going on how I would break down. Just getting here. Not if. The, the theory being, I think it might have been Day that realized this, those cars wouldn't have made a 400 mile drive when they were new.

• 42:55Speaker 02

Here it is now, 45 years old, like no chance this is gonna make it. So I get up in the morning and I leave at like crack of dawn before, in the middle of the night. And I make a deal with myself. No bullshit. None of my normal fuckery. No top speed runs on I-5 in the middle of the night. No, none of my passing shit, whatever. So I'm just right lane, 79 in a 70.

• 43:17Speaker 02

Puttering along at 2200 RPM. And I'm, the deal that I made myself included, no downshifts up the grapevine. So the grapevine is a 4,000 foot climb. Why is that included in the deal? Because it's a 1960s era American V8. And I know what I normally do up that hill, which is a lot of revs, a lot of low gear and a lot of because everyone's a fucking idiot. Yeah. And they slow down to like 55 miles an hour. Yes, your car can go up hills. Right. And your car can do 100. Your 35, 45 year old car will do 100 miles an hour up this hill and I'm about to show you. Okay? So I'm like, none of my normal bullshit, Jason. Right lane, fifth gear. So as I'm driving along, I'm like, I'm just going through like all the things I'm gonna say to Jay on camera. The thing is, an incredible road trip car.

• 44:00Speaker 02

It's like, it had the longest fifth gear of any car in production at the time. So it was like 2,000 RPMs, 80 miles an hour. Yeah, that's the Corvette move. Comfortable, it's smooth, it's doing everything great, except you can't see a fucking thing out of the mirror. Really? Cause if you look at the photos here, it doesn't, you wouldn't guess that. Why is it so bad? So we drove to Edmonton, I bought this car with two friends who then I bought it out as soon as we got home. We, first thing we do, we land in Edmonton, we get in the car and I'm like, oh, this fucking mirror, I can't see anything. We stopped at a Canadian Tire and bought the little one-inch sticky condense mirrors and threw them on. And the whole way down, the whole way down from Edmonton back to San Francisco, we had, whoever was in the backseat was doing like blind spot monitoring.

• 44:43Speaker 02

Like, cause you can't see a fucking thing. Weird.

• 44:47Speaker 01

  The mirrors are not small.

• 44:48Speaker 02

They're not small, but they're in the wrong spot. Really? Something about the geometry between you, the mirror, and all the cars that you're about to hit, you cannot see a fucking thing. Plus, they love to fall and droop while you're driving, so you're constantly adjusting it. And the adjustment wheel is a wheel that goes in, out, up, down. And so you can, it just sucks. All the original road tests called it the worst, the mirrors were useless and whatever. So what I'm realizing is as the sun is coming up, I can no longer see where the fuck anyone else is. And so my, in my head, I'm like, the worst part about this car, everyone talks about the British Leyland build quality, whatever. No, mirrors, right? Mental no. Make that fucking, make that comment to Jay.

• 45:31Speaker 02

So I'm going up the grapevine and there's this, well, who knows, he may sue me one day, cause I actually hit a dick bag in a fucking Silverado. And he's now directly, I'm all the way in the right lane and he's one lane over, two lanes over from me, sitting there. And I'm now foot on the floor, just started out the hill at like 68 miles an hour and I'm down to like 64 and just la, la, la, la, la, la, up, up the hill. And no matter, this, no matter who comes between us, no matter what's going on, he's sitting there next to me. So I gotta move one lane over now, cause we're passing trucks who are doing like 30 up this hill.

• 46:06Matt Farah?

So now trucks are in lane number one, you're in lane number two, they're in number three.

• 46:11Speaker 02

I can't see the guy because the truck is so much higher than I am, but he's directly next to me.

• 46:16Matt Farah?

  You see door.

• 46:16Speaker 02

I see, I see rocker, like, you know, big Silverado. And, and I'm like, what this motherfucker? And usually when this happens, I can get their attention and I realize they're trying to take a picture. And people are taking pictures of this car the whole way down, right? It's just, looks like a spaceship, no one's ever seen one before. So I'm like, this motherfucker's taking a picture. And I finally get back over in a lane one and I see him and I realize he's not taking a picture of me. He's just not awake yet. It's like eight forty in the morning and he's just like, you know, one of these people.

• 46:45Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 46:45Speaker 02

George Carlin used to say, you know, just look at them and you realize there's a negative force field around them. Around him. And so I'm like, you. So.

• 46:54Speaker 01

Wait, are you so bothered that he's just pacing you to the same speed?

• 46:57Speaker 02

Same speed. I have nowhere to go if I need to get away from him, right? It's like, so finally, six miles of this, he's right to my left. Um, and finally there are, I see up ahead, there are two trucks passing each other. And so I need to get in his lane.

• 47:11Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 47:12Speaker 02

And I'm like, if I downshift, if I slow down, I'm gonna have to downshift. I'm never gonna get back up to sixty miles an hour. The thing only has a hundred and thirty-three horsepower to begin with. So now I'm gonna have to go into third, I'm gonna have to rev this thing to five grand, I'm gonna pop the motor and Jay's gonna be right. And this is not going to happen.

• 47:27Matt Farah?

Let me ask you something. Is it better, you were in fifth.

• 47:30Speaker 02

Fifth at like two thousand RPM.

• 47:32Matt Farah?

Is it better to lug the engine in fifth?

• 47:35Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 47:35Matt Farah?

Okay. You weren't lugging it, but it was just.

• 47:38Speaker 02

If I slowed down anymore, I was gonna have to downshift, right?

• 47:41Speaker 01

You were on the border of lugging.

• 47:42Matt Farah?

But it's pretty, pretty low RPM, pretty high throttle load.

• 47:46Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah. I'm like.

• 47:47Matt Farah?

Is that better or worse for an old car than just going down a gear? And being at three thousand or thirty-five RPM?

• 47:55Speaker 02

Would have been fine, but I know me, I would've had to go two, floored it, rev the thing to six, six grand, bent a pushrod.

• 48:02Matt Farah?

I like how you like couldn't do, you can't do the thing in the middle.

• 48:07Speaker 02

  You know.

• 48:07Matt Farah?

  You can't just like.

• 48:09Speaker 02

You've seen the way I drive, right?

• 48:11Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 48:12Speaker 02

Professional driver, close course and all that other shit.

• 48:14Matt Farah?

But also here you are fucking with your foot on the floor going fifty-nine in fifth.

• 48:20Speaker 02

  Right.

• 48:20Matt Farah?

There's something in between those two things.

• 48:23Speaker 02

Well, I realize now I don't have a choice, right?

• 48:25Speaker 01

I love how analytical you are and almost like a perfectionist about like the things you write and the things you say and all these things. And then it's like. All right, just go down one gear and drive like a normal human and the most accurate.

• 48:37Matt Farah?

But I made a rule, like I mean it would be okay if you said, Jay, I had to go to fourth for 30 seconds. And then back to fifth.

• 48:44Speaker 02

It would have been totally fine.

• 48:44Matt Farah?

  Would have been fine.

• 48:45Speaker 02

Right, but and I did, right? So I had to lift, so trucks are coming, they're like half mile in the distance and we're approaching them relatively quickly despite the fact that we're going walking speed.

• 48:54Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 48:55Speaker 02

Cause this guy's like um, and so I lift off and I duck in behind him, get back on the, on the, on the floor and I'm like, oh, okay. So at three quarters throttle, I'm pacing him. We're totally good. And he starts slowing down and slowing down and slowing down and slowing down and I'm like might have been driving a little bit closer than I should have.

• 49:14Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 49:15Speaker 02

And I'm like, I, I've, I've fucking had it. I'm going to third. I'm just getting around this guy. So I go to look over and I see in the sticky mirror, there's a white Sentra. And I can't see the white Sentra any other way than in the sticky mirror. And I'm like, where the fuck is that goddamn Sentra? I'm like doing the Linda Blair thing, my head's spinning. I cannot see the motherfucker. And this goes on for probably another half a mile.

• 49:38Matt Farah?

  Oh my god.

• 49:39Speaker 02

And I'm like, I gotta get out of here. And now you start to get that like claustrophobia, like get me the fuck out of here, I'm trapped. So I'm like, you know what? Fourth gear, totally fine. Just putting my signal on and I'm going. Everyone else is gonna figure this shit out, right? So I'm looking over and I'm looking over and I'm looking and eventually I figure the Sentra is gonna come into the regular mirror. Or I'll see him or he'll honk or I'll flash a light and I'll figure out where the fuck he is, right? That's what's going through my head. And I'm looking over and I just start to go, like going, I'm going, I'm going. And I'm looking over, looking over, looking back, looking over and one of the times I look over, bam!

• 50:12Speaker 02

And all I see is brake lights in front of me. The don't make me, I don't know.

• 50:16Matt Farah?

The truck came into your lane?

• 50:18Speaker 02

Fucking hit the brakes. Because we were just about to hit the two other trucks passing each other. At this point, we were

• 50:24Matt Farah?

Not even in your lane? Two lanes over and he hit the brakes before Pat?

• 50:28Speaker 02

Lane one and two were trucks, you're Silverado's three.

• 50:31Matt Farah?

And he hit the brakes before passing two trucks up a hill?

• 50:34Speaker 01

Was there someone in front of him?

• 50:35Speaker 02

No. There was no one for fucking miles in any direction. I was fucking berserk. So it was just one of these like, punk, fuck it. Are you fucking kidding me? Right? So I'm like, all right, I scratched the bumper, cause it's, the bumpers are like six feet long, they're rubber. And I'm like, there'll be a scuff on the bumper, I'll ask Jay's team to, to

• 50:51Matt Farah?

  That truck's too tall.

• 50:52Speaker 02

Gaffer, gaffer. Gaff, just tape it, just film it from a different angle, whatever. And so I immediately, motherfucker. So I go around him, because now we're going so fucking slow that like I'm, we're doing thirty-five probably, I don't even know. And I third gear, full throttle, right over, there's just a pad I pull over. And I, he stops behind me and I'm like, I'm not going near this guy, because I will actually throttle him.

• 51:14Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 51:15Speaker 02

And I walk over and I look at the front of the car and I genuinely expected to see a scuff.

• 51:19Matt Farah?

  And you saw that?

• 51:20Speaker 02

I saw that and I was like-

• 51:21Matt Farah?

The headlight is punched in, the corner of the hood is bent down, the front quarter panel has an actual imprint of a Silverado's bumper.

• 51:31Speaker 01

It looks like you could mount the headlight in the front fender now.

• 51:34Matt Farah?

Like you took a fucking dental implant print of a fucking Silverado bumper in your quarter panel.

• 51:41Speaker 02

The last Ford Focus had the headlight that wrapped all the way ba- basically up to the A pillar, I did that to the Rover.

• 51:45Matt Farah?

Yeah, you turned a flat front Rover headlight into a Jaguar E-Type headlight. That's crazy.

• 51:52Speaker 02

I was very upset. So I saw that, I was like, oh shit.

• 51:55Matt Farah?

  Oh.

• 51:56Speaker 02

So then I walked back to the back of his car and the bumper's got this beautiful streak of turquoise Persian Aqua.

• 52:02Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 52:02Speaker 02

He has a name of the, of the paint on it, so it pushed in a little bit. I'm like, okay, fine. So I walk over to his mirror and, of his window and he's holding the wheel, staring straight in front like this. And the guy is still not conscious.

• 52:15Matt Farah?

  Would you get-

• 52:16Speaker 02

He took a fucking hit to the rear and it still didn't wake the asshole up. And so he rolls down the window and I'm like, I'm like, do I kill him? And I'm just like, are you okay? And he was like, uh huh. And I'm like, are you awake? Uh huh. That's all he said. I'm like, okay, give me a license. And he was like, what? I'm like, license and insurance now. Sorry I hate you. He just looks at me like I'm crazy. Take a picture of the license, take a picture of the insurance company, he's like, and yours? I'm like, here you go, take a picture, have a nice day. And I just left. And he looked at me and he was like, whoa, whoa, whoa, wait. I'm like, call my insurance, you have it now. And I got in the car and took off. I was so mad at him that I was like, it's, look, it's my fault.

• 52:52Matt Farah?

What, would you, if you could guess an age, what age would you guess?

• 52:56Speaker 02

  Sixty-two?

• 52:57Matt Farah?

Okay, so old but not that old.

• 52:59Speaker 02

Not old, not old enough to be do- he was just not either. I hate to say this because this is like, although I'm not revealing his identity.

• 53:08Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 53:08Speaker 02

I think he was either drunk, or still on sleeping pills, or just checked out, but even getting hit.

• 53:14Matt Farah?

What time of the morning was this? Oh, so not that early either, okay.

• 53:18Speaker 02

But he was clearly committed to work.

• 53:19Matt Farah?

  Sure.

• 53:20Speaker 02

So, anyway, so I just, I immediately get on the phone, the car drive's fine, so I get on the phone. And I called Leno's producer, I'm like, "Hey!", and he's like, "Oh my god, you're almost here", because I had like, 10 o'clock was call time, like I had to be there at 10. And I'm like, "I'm gonna make it", and I'm like, "Okay, so the good news is, I'm on time."

• 53:37Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 53:38Speaker 02

He's like, "The Rover still running?", I'm like, "Rover's great", "Except I crashed it", and he was like, "What do you mean?", and I'm like, "Well, I just punched a pickup truck, and I don't know what to do", and he's like, "Well, well, we had a bet, and so I guess you're not gonna make it", and I'm like, "No bitch",

• 53:53Speaker 02

and he was like, "Really, you're gonna come here?", I'm like, "Well, you tell me", like, "I can, I can turn around and just drive right home, it's only four hours", "Or I'll come in", and he's like, "Well, how bad is it?", I'm like, "Crunch the corner, we're not gonna be able to film around it", and he was like, "Just bring it in, and we'll see what we can do", so now I have another hour and a bit to think about what I've done. And I'm like, I'm just, I think I'm just gonna-

• 54:12Matt Farah?

I mean, you may be potentially, possibly legally culpable, but maybe, maybe not also, but definitely not morally culpable. Was there ever a white Sentra?

• 54:23Speaker 02

  There was always.

• 54:24Matt Farah?

  There was.

• 54:24Speaker 02

  No, 100%, yeah, 100%, no, I-

• 54:26Matt Farah?

I was waiting for him to find, for the part of this story where we find out the white Sentra wasn't real. I never saw a second Sentra.

• 54:33Speaker 02

I'm waiting, I'm waiting for the Sentra. So, I haven't publicized this yet, right? So I'm waiting for somebody to be like, "I was in the white Sentra",

• 54:39Matt Farah?

  Oh man.

• 54:40Speaker 02

"And I saw the whole thing", either way, look, at the end of the day, I'm grown up. I have to pretend, I pretend to be a fucking grown up. If you're gonna be a grown up, you have to admit when you've done wrong. I hit another car, and it's 100% my fault. There's no, it doesn't matter whether he hit the brakes or not, he hit the brakes while I was looking to the side, it's my fault. It's just shit happens.

• 55:00Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 55:01Speaker 02

So now I'm like, "What do I do on this fucking show", like, I, and I made the decision, like, I could get there, I sort of initially decided, I'm gonna get there, I'm gonna say, "Guys, I'm really sorry, I found out they had a backup car, because they didn't think I was gonna make it", so they're like, "Oh, we have a backup car", he tells me on the phone, "We have backup, don't worry about it", I'm like, but I'm, so I'm like, "I'm just gonna ask to leave the car there, and I'm gonna get in a plane", because Leno's shop is at Burbank Airport.

• 55:23Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 55:23Speaker 02

"I'm just gonna get in a plane, I'm gonna fly home, and just pretend this never happened". I thought about it. I'm like, I work for an insurance company. Like, let me just... So call my boss.

• 55:32Matt Farah?

My lawyers are better than this person than sleeping man's lawyers.

• 55:36Speaker 02

No, I call my boss and I'm like, hey, listen, this is pretty embarrassing. I crashed the car. Um, and he's like, oh, no. And I'm like, do you want to turn this into something or do I just go home? And he's like, it's entirely up to you. He's like, we don't work for the record. We don't work, you know, my boss. We don't work with the insurance side. It's just, it's two different orgs. Like, we have nothing to do with each other. But I've had two claims in the last 20 years with Hagerty, and they've been amazing.

• 55:59Matt Farah?

They are quite a good insurance company. Yeah, I, we had a claim when Hannah got hit in the Delica and they paid me within six hours.

• 56:08Speaker 02

Oh, wait. Oh, wait. This gets, this gets one hour. I wasn't even home. So, so I get to the Lenos and they're like, oh, fuck, what do you want to do? I'm like, do me a favor and just let me talk about the insurance for one second. So, Lena, we, we recorded the episode. It hasn't aired yet. I think it's scheduled to drop.

• 56:26Matt Farah?

  He drove it fucking broken?

• 56:28Speaker 02

  Like a fucking lunatic.

• 56:29Matt Farah?

  Really?

• 56:30Speaker 02

To the point where I'm like, in the car, I can't wait to see this. Because in the car, I'm like, Jay, so you clearly like the way this car drives. And he's like, why do you say that? I'm like, you're going really fast. And he's like, no, I always go this fast. And then what you definitely will not see in the final edit is the guys in the camera car who were listening to us are like, Jay, we can't keep up with you in the EcoBoost Explorer. Slow the fuck down. He was, he drove, he hated this car and I think wanted it to die. He tried everything to kill it and both of us.

• 56:59Matt Farah?

Really funny. You know what? Back in the day when me and Rob Ferretti did the first to get a ticket challenge, which the clip circulates on fucking Instagram like every four months and racks up millions of views, but nobody ever watched the full 20 minute video, which they should because it's hilarious. But I got to, I had to pick a car from the Gotham Dream Cars fleet to go out and compete with Rob Ferretti to see who could intentionally get a ticket first. Because it's a thing you should never do.

• 57:23Speaker 02

  Never do.

• 57:23Matt Farah?

You shouldn't have done it in 07. You certainly shouldn't do it now. Um, and Rob had his C5 Corvette with like straight pipes, a turbo and like a giant GT wing. And I picked the Mercedes SLR McLaren because I hated it so much. I wanted an excuse to just beat the shit out of it in front of cops.

• 57:44Speaker 02

  Did you win?

• 57:47Matt Farah?

No, I didn't, but my, the clip of me became much more iconic of the clip of him.

• 57:54Speaker 02

Cause I feel like a dickbag driving manoeuvre in a Charger or an Altima will get you a ticket far faster than like rich dickbag.

• 58:00Matt Farah?

Well, but this was in 07 and we had a warehouse full of exotic rental cars, so it was kind of like pre, it was before pre-rich dickbag influencer. This was effectively like upscale, you know, like, what was those videos that, what's the guy Dustin? No, not Eat the Rich, he was doing Gumball and shit, Mischief videos?

• 58:25Speaker 02

  Oh yeah, Mischief 3000.

• 58:26Matt Farah?

The Mischief 3, this was like upscale versions of Mischief 3000 videos, yeah. Um, wait, but when you, uh, I'm so sorry, but I'm glad Jay hated the car and beat the balls off.

• 58:38Speaker 02

He did not say this, but now, four videos in with him, I know when he likes a car not. He did not.

• 58:44Matt Farah?

  Is it a manual?

• 58:45Speaker 02

  It's a manual.

• 58:46Matt Farah?

Oh, it is? I didn't put it together that it was a manual.

• 58:47Speaker 02

Yeah, so it's a manual, it is, it's a 3.5 litre V8, rear drive, manual transmission.

• 58:52Matt Farah?

  What's it weigh?

• 58:53Speaker 02

  300210.

• 58:55Matt Farah?

  It's probably, probably delightful, actually.

• 58:57Speaker 02

It is a really, look, this car won the British Touring Car Championship in 1979, 1980, I mean, it's actually a really good car.

• 59:05Matt Farah?

Have you considered doing like a touring car build? Aesthetic with it, now that it's broken, it's a good time to do that.

• 59:13Speaker 02

A week before, I'm talking to the guys at Hagerty's Redline Rebuild Team, different video team, they do the stop motion videos that are very cool, very cool stuff. And we were talking, and he's like, I said, what's next? We were talking about doing a VR6, I was trying to get them to do a VR6, because I want to see what that engine looks like apart, and I think that'd be really cool. And he's like, well, I'm thinking about a Buick 215, because we haven't done an aluminum V8. And I'm like, wait a second.

• 59:35Matt Farah?

  What's a Buick 215?

• 59:37Speaker 02

That, it's the 215cc Buick V8 that was all aluminum, America's first ever all aluminum V8.

• 59:43Matt Farah?

  What did it go in?

• 59:44Speaker 02

It was two years only. I don't remember which cars it, Electra? I remember which cars it went in. They ditched it, Rover bought it from them after seeing one on the ground at Mercury Marine, and it turned it into the Rover V8. Just 3500, 215 is 3.5.

• 59:58Matt Farah?

Oh, it became the Mercury Marine.

• 1:00:00Speaker 02

  No, it never did.

• 1:00:01Matt Farah?

  It didn't?

• 1:00:02Speaker 02

It became the Rover 3.5, which became the 3.9, the 4.3, and the 4.6, which are in the Range Rovers.

• 1:00:07Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:00:07Speaker 02

All the Range Rover, every Range Rover has used a Buick 1959.

• 1:00:11Matt Farah?

I'm gonna make sure to remind every Range Rover owner I see of that fact.

• 1:00:15Speaker 02

  It's a Buick motor.

• 1:00:16Matt Farah?

  They got a Buick motor.

• 1:00:17Speaker 02

It was a Buick motor that they couldn't stop from leaking because they fucked up a bunch of engineering on it, and they fucked the casting up because it was aluminum, they didn't have enough experience with it. So Rover actually, British Leyland, re-engineered the engine for the Rover P6, 3500, and the Range Rover. This is the original Range Rover motor. So they wanted to do this motor.

• 1:00:37Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:00:37Speaker 02

And I said, "Oh, well, that's what's in the Rover." And they're like, "Well, send us the Rover." And I'm like, "Okay, so let me go to Duleno, and then I'll put it on a truck, and you guys, I'll fly out, I'll pull the motor with you, and then we'll build me something." So this happened.

• 1:00:49Matt Farah?

What can you do with it?

• 1:00:50Speaker 02

You can do a lot with it.

• 1:00:51Matt Farah?

  Really?

• 1:00:51Speaker 02

But my deal was, I dynoed it, so I put 108 to the wheels.

• 1:00:55Matt Farah?

  Nice.

• 1:00:55Speaker 02

In 4th gear, spinning 155 miles an hour. So it actually should have been stupid.

• 1:01:00Matt Farah?

  The gearing is really bad.

• 1:01:01Speaker 02

Stupid, stupid. It hits fucking top speed in like 3rd gear, I swear.

• 1:01:04Matt Farah?

  That's hilarious gearing.

• 1:01:06Speaker 02

So stupid. So, I think it was 150, whatever it was, but when I realized this, I'm screaming at the dyno operator. I'm like, "Those are Fredestein Sprint Classics on it." They were, none of this thing should have ever spun that fast.

• 1:01:17Matt Farah?

Yeah, they're like 120 mile an hour tires.

• 1:01:20Speaker 02

At best. So, so we pulled the motor, and the deal is, it's gotta make twice the power. So the goal is 216 to the wheels.

• 1:01:29Matt Farah?

So you just, is it just old hot rod shit you're doing? Heads and fucking?

• 1:01:32Speaker 02

  New heads, high compression.

• 1:01:34Matt Farah?

You're not putting like a chopper cam in it, are you?

• 1:01:38Speaker 02

I wanted to sound, what I, what I asked for is-

• 1:01:40Matt Farah?

Can you have him make a flat plane crank?

• 1:01:42Speaker 02

  No, no, I want the

• 1:01:45Speaker 02

I want that dignified elegant looking Daytona copy, because it's a copy of Ferrari Daytona, right? To, to sound like a friggin NASCAR.

• 1:01:54Matt Farah?

  Okay.

• 1:01:54Speaker 02

  And so, I want

• 1:01:57Matt Farah?

Can you make it, have it make twice the power and, and not drive like shit?

• 1:02:01Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, so we're doing a mild cam on it. So, from the factory it had 8.1, 8.13 to, to one compression.

• 1:02:07Matt Farah?

  Oh.

• 1:02:08Speaker 02

  So now I have 10 to 1 or 9.8 to 1.

• 1:02:10Matt Farah?

  Oh my god.

• 1:02:10Speaker 02

I asked for it to be a 3.9.

• 1:02:11Matt Farah?

That compression combined with that gearing.

• 1:02:13Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:02:13Matt Farah?

  Talk about the fucking laziest

• 1:02:17Speaker 02

  9.8 to 60 and a 7,000 pound flywheel.

• 1:02:23Speaker 02

  So, here it is.

• 1:02:24Matt Farah?

  Top of-

• 1:02:25Speaker 02

This is now fixed. This is the after photo. It's at a body shop in Michigan.

• 1:02:30Matt Farah?

  Great.

• 1:02:30Speaker 02

I did Euro lights, Euro grill, Euro bumpers, Euro corners. Um, so that is now a full European spec Series 1 front end on it.

• 1:02:39Matt Farah?

  Cool.

• 1:02:39Speaker 02

And a rear bumper on it.

• 1:02:40Matt Farah?

Were all the parts like $85 and $8,000 to ship?

• 1:02:44Speaker 02

There's a guy named Johan on Facebook-

• 1:02:45Matt Farah?

  Of course there is.

• 1:02:46Speaker 02

Who sent me all of the parts for free.

• 1:02:49Matt Farah?

  Oh, really?

• 1:02:49Speaker 02

Because he loves the content, loved the video I did it, and loved the car.

• 1:02:52Matt Farah?

  Oh, that's a real delight.

• 1:02:53Speaker 02

So I had to buy the front grill. There's a company in the-

• 1:02:55Matt Farah?

It's not what the invoice is.

• 1:02:57Speaker 02

No, I can't, I cannot commit insurance fraud or whatever. The fender I got from, and the grill I got from a company called Rimmer Brothers, which you'll have a lovely time with. Uh, in the UK that just does Rover and British Leyland Potts. It was a lot of shipping. Stop it, stop it, you children.

• 1:03:15Matt Farah?

That's all the Potts division does. We have other divisions.

• 1:03:21Speaker 02

  Um, anyway, so, we decided-

• 1:03:23Matt Farah?

  It looks great.

• 1:03:23Speaker 02

  It looks really-

• 1:03:24Matt Farah?

Wait, but, but you have, you have a chance. You, now is your chance.

• 1:03:29Speaker 02

Okay, so do you see the shirt? You didn't even comment on it.

• 1:03:31Matt Farah?

  Jasonsentme.com?

• 1:03:32Speaker 02

  Jasonsentme.com.

• 1:03:33Matt Farah?

I figured you would at some point.

• 1:03:34Speaker 02

I set up, I bought the-

• 1:03:36Matt Farah?

That's, turn that screw, it's gonna droop. Hold the, hold the mic where you want it and then tighten.

• 1:03:41Speaker 02

They're all fine, they're all tight.

• 1:03:41Matt Farah?

No, it's, it was just drooping. You moved it and then it was drooping.

• 1:03:45Speaker 02

It went soft after you're talking about Rimmer Brothers.

• 1:03:46Matt Farah?

  Yes.

• 1:03:46Speaker 02

  Disgusting.

• 1:03:46Matt Farah?

I know. It's, clearly my microphone likes that a little more than yours does.

• 1:03:52Speaker 02

  The

• 1:03:56Speaker 02

  Yeah, my thought was

• 1:03:56Matt Farah?

  The mirrors.

• 1:03:57Speaker 02

So I got the jasonzimmy.com domain. And I told the guys on the insurance side of the business. I'm like, you don't have any say in this. I've just set up a thing where we'll just track how many quotes I can get off of this incident. And the reason why is I would have much preferred to just ship the fucking car home, fix it, and never say a word to anyone about this. But if I'm going to publicly humiliate myself

• 1:04:19Matt Farah?

  Sure.

• 1:04:20Speaker 02

by admitting that I punted a fucking pickup truck. I am going to get at least internal credit for this. So if you go to jasonzimmy.com, go get an insurance quote, and here's why. You've you said you've had a claim. I had a fucking I had a wire transfer notification one hour and 10 minutes after the appraiser came up with the dollar amount.

• 1:04:40Matt Farah?

No, to me, the measure of an insurance company isn't what they charge. It's how fast they pay you when you need them and how little fucking bullshit they put up to getting paid when you need the money.

• 1:04:54Speaker 02

This is the way it worked. I'm at Leno's garage and on speakerphone, I call claims because they're miking me up to go on camera. And I'm like, and the girl's like, hey, thank you for calling, whatever. And I'm like, hi. I have to make fun of the midbress your accent. And I'm like, hi, just wrecked my car. I have 20 minutes to make a decision right now. I need to get home. How far are you? Okay, so we go through the list. You have this amount of coverage to get you home. You have this amount of coverage that's trip interruption coverage, right? To get the car home. You have this amount of coverage to get the car back to whatever shop you want. You have this amount of because she just goes through the whole thing. And I'm like, okay, can I just buy a ticket? She's like, just get home, like whatever. And I'm like, what about Ubers? Jason, just go home.

• 1:05:37Speaker 02

It's fine. So the next day, I call the guy.

• 1:05:41Matt Farah?

But with that with that Traverse City accent, it's really

• 1:05:45Speaker 02

Traverse City accent. Jason, oh my god.

• 1:05:47Matt Farah?

Jason, just get on a plane.

• 1:05:49Speaker 02

Just be fine. You've had a bad day. I booked a ticket on untied airlines or whatever it was, Delta. I, we filmed the segment, I leave the car at Jay's. That night, my normal guy that does, we ship cars all the time for filming. He's like, yeah, I have an empty truck, we'll pick it up. I'm like, just send me an invoice, whatever it is. That, that night, my car is home and I have a stack of receipts. I text the adjuster in the morning. I'm like, here's the flight, here's the Uber, here's the Uber home on the other side of it. Here's dinner that I had at the airport if you, because she kept telling me, just get home. Um, and here's the, whatever it was to ship the car.

• 1:06:29Speaker 02

And I had one hour later and a message from her, hey, fill out this form for your bank information and we'll just send it. One hour after that, wire transfer. And I was like, okay, that's fucking wild. That's solid. Then we ship the car to Michigan. While it's being shipped, I get a call from the adjuster. Oh, I upload pictures of it on this little app. This guy calls me, he's like, hi, it's Tony. And I'm surrounded by Anthony's. I'm like, of course you're a fucking another Anthony. Um, and he's like, okay, I spent a whole day trying to figure out just exactly what a Rover SD1 is. Cool car, like your video, because that was the source of half of my research. Oh, that's funny. So I found a bunch of parts and I went through the whole thing. Good thing you made a video. No shit, right? He's like, I'm gonna send you a PDF of my appraisal and I need you to know one thing.

• 1:07:14Speaker 02

I have no idea where we're gonna get these parts. I'm looking at eBay, I'm looking at whatever, blah, blah, blah. Don't get mad if you see something you don't like, just call me. I'm like, okay. He writes, we have a conversation, we get off the phone. I get a PDF, it's X amount of dollars. And one hour later, the wire transfer came in, minus my deductible. And I'm like, you have got to be fucking kidding me. Car goes to Michigan, I buy all the parts, boom, I just last week sent, sent all of the updated invoices. It's a lot more than they expected. This car would have been totaled. Yeah. This is, this is the key point here. Forget about how fast they paid, that's wonderful. This car would have totaled, been totaled sixty point, sixty-three point seven times if I had it insured with anyone else. Yeah.

• 1:07:58Speaker 02

But I had, Harrods is an agreed value thing, so you discuss with them what you think the car's worth. Yeah. And you're talking about replacement cost. Yeah, yeah. Not market value. And this is the nicest Rover SD1 in the US. It's a North American spec car, they only made a couple hundred of them. 1200, 1200 of them. They're all gone.

• 1:08:14Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:14Speaker 02

And so we came up with a number of what we thought it would cost to replace it with a Eurocar and whatever, because we'll never find another one. And thank God I did. Because it is now paid for and doesn't have an engine in it, unrelated to the crash. But if you care about your car, you go get a guaranteed value policy.

• 1:08:30Matt Farah?

So when Hannah got hit in the Delica, which is on Hagerty. First of all, the funniest thing about the Delica is that it was the fourth car in my, my policy. And it kicked in a multi-vehicle discount.

• 1:08:43Speaker 02

  So it cost you less.

• 1:08:44Matt Farah?

And it's so much cheaper than all the other cars I have on this policy. That my premium was negative $85 a year. So Hagerty pays me $85 a year to drive this car to keep it insured. So it's actually not even worth selling.

• 1:08:58Speaker 02

Just hit, trust me, hit the 10 car mark.

• 1:09:00Matt Farah?

  Well, oh.

• 1:09:02Speaker 02

When I added the 10 car, I got another discount.

• 1:09:05Matt Farah?

Like a punch card at Subway?

• 1:09:07Speaker 02

Well, the Ferrari actually saved me money. I got a refund when I added the Ferrari. Because that I think was car six. And then when I got to 10, it was such a big discount that they wrote me a check.

• 1:09:15Matt Farah?

Get out of here. I'm at eight.

• 1:09:17Speaker 02

  Go for 10.

• 1:09:17Matt Farah?

Oh, no. Okay. Shit. You're, people call me an expressive friend.

• 1:09:21Speaker 02

  JasonSendMe.com.

• 1:09:22Matt Farah?

  You just beat me.

• 1:09:23Speaker 02

  JasonSendMe.com.

• 1:09:24Matt Farah?

So no, but when Hannah got hit, it was during COVID. And she got hit in a, in a, in her Delica. All that was damaged was the sliding door. She got hit right in the sliding door, which still opened, but was just dead. So new door, two grand.

• 1:09:41Speaker 02

  You could get one.

• 1:09:43Matt Farah?

  In Canada.

• 1:09:44Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 1:09:45Matt Farah?

  Closest one.

• 1:09:46Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:09:46Matt Farah?

Shipping from Japan, if I want a Japanese one, $6,000 to get the door. Shipping from Canada, I, height of COVID. This was like May of 2020.

• 1:10:03Matt Farah?

I had to, I had to send one of my employees from here. In a, shipping was not possible from Canada. Things weren't going across.

• 1:10:11Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:10:12Matt Farah?

I had to send one of my employees from here in a rented Chrysler minivan. To drive to the Canadian border and meet a guy to get a door.

• 1:10:23Speaker 02

You gotta do what you gotta do.

• 1:10:24Matt Farah?

Drive home. And Hagerty paid for it.

• 1:10:26Speaker 02

  Paid for it.

• 1:10:27Matt Farah?

  Paid for it.

• 1:10:27Speaker 02

  Listen, this is-

• 1:10:28Matt Farah?

They paid, uh, they paid me, it costs more in bullshit to get this van fixed than I paid for the whole van. And they paid for it.

• 1:10:36Speaker 02

  This thing-

• 1:10:37Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:37Speaker 02

  This repair-

• 1:10:38Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:38Speaker 02

Costs two and a half times what I paid for that car.

• 1:10:40Matt Farah?

What you paid for the car, yeah, yeah.

• 1:10:42Speaker 02

Yeah, about the car, cheap, but it doesn't matter. That's the difference.

• 1:10:45Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:46Speaker 02

I have fought with State Farm, I've fought with Progressive, we've all fought with different insurance companies. But when you can agree on the value of the car on the outset-

• 1:10:53Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:10:53Speaker 02

Before the fucking thing has crashed, which is why I'm doing all these commercials and everyone in the video now.

• 1:10:57Matt Farah?

If you're buying investment grade shit and the value goes up-

• 1:11:00Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:11:01Matt Farah?

  You adjust it every year.

• 1:11:02Speaker 02

I bombed this car from some kid whose grandfather left it to him and he had no idea what it was worth, who it, what, he didn't know anything about it. So we stole it. And that doesn't mean, if, tha- that would have been, uh, State Farm would have, like, I know, I use State Farm because, as an example, because they're my regular insurance provider.

• 1:11:19Matt Farah?

  Any regular insurance company.

• 1:11:20Speaker 02

From my daily. But they, they would have been like, okay, we'll give you sixteen hundred dollars and send you on your way. And I would have had to mount the world's biggest bitch fit.

• 1:11:28Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:11:29Speaker 02

There would have been lawyers involved. I was putting that car back on the road if it cost me five figures out of my own pocket-

• 1:11:33Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:34Speaker 02

  Because I want the car.

• 1:11:35Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:11:36Speaker 02

  Period.

• 1:11:36Matt Farah?

  No, that's the point.

• 1:11:36Speaker 02

And so this is, like, this, this is why I felt passionate enough to make a T-shirt and whatever, like-

• 1:11:41Matt Farah?

Got it. You know, agreed value insurance, whether it's Hagerty or someone else, is a good idea if your car is special.

• 1:11:46Speaker 02

Yeah. Make sure you have special insurance on a special car. If it's your daily, no, it's a shit.

• 1:11:51Matt Farah?

  And they, Hagerty, I've tried.

• 1:11:52Speaker 02

  For good reason!

• 1:11:53Matt Farah?

  Hagerty, Hagerty won't insure daily.

• 1:11:54Speaker 02

  For good reason, I know.

• 1:11:55Matt Farah?

And they make you have a daily.

• 1:11:57Speaker 02

  Of course.

• 1:11:57Matt Farah?

Like, if you, even if you, even if you only drive old cars-

• 1:12:01Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:12:01Matt Farah?

You have to prove you have a daily.

• 1:12:03Speaker 02

Right. Uh, and I- A daily can be an old car too, but you're not gonna insure it with Hagerty.

• 1:12:06Matt Farah?

It can, but it can't be insured with them. I-

• 1:12:08Speaker 02

And the reason why is, listen, I would have never, I don't subject my cars to rush hour traffic for, and you see why. Dippy do in, in his Silverado-

• 1:12:17Matt Farah?

That's why you're going at five in the morning. Yeah, that sucks balls. Well, it'll be fun when it's done. That'll be a good little hot rod. That's cool.

• 1:12:23Speaker 02

I'm hoping for headers, I'm hoping for headwork, I'm hoping for a cam, definitely ten to one compression.

• 1:12:27Matt Farah?

You know, it should, your goal should be to make it sound like an Alfa Montreal. You know, the two point eight liter V8, one of the best sounding fucking-

• 1:12:35Speaker 02

Can you hear videos on, like, videos on YouTube if you play them?

• 1:12:38Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:38Speaker 02

  Yeah, whatever.

• 1:12:39Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:39Speaker 02

  Do Rover Vitesse sound-

• 1:12:42Speaker 02

Or SD1 Vitesse. So Vitesse was the homologation car that they made.

• 1:12:47Matt Farah?

  Okay.

• 1:12:47Speaker 02

  It was 190 horse.

• 1:12:48Matt Farah?

  Okay.

• 1:12:49Speaker 02

  Three and a half liters.

• 1:12:50Matt Farah?

I also would like to see what the race car looked like. Was it cool?

• 1:12:53Speaker 02

  Race cars were hot looking.

• 1:12:53Matt Farah?

Were they cool looking? Can you do some race car bodywork on yours? Like is it, do they widen it?

• 1:13:00Speaker 02

It's the only nice one in the country. There's a guy coming around, it's not a short, it's a regular one. Coming around a roundabout.

• 1:13:08Matt Farah?

Oh, the, yeah, the Vitesse has like the deep chin splitter. The, the deep chin splitter and shit. Yeah, it looks good. Alright, let's see.

• 1:13:15Speaker 02

  This is what I want.

• 1:13:16Matt Farah?

  A nine second long video.

• 1:13:19Matt Farah?

Those guys drifts out of the roundabout too, like a boss. Alright. Oh, yeah.

• 1:13:26Speaker 01

  Open diff, I think?

• 1:13:27Matt Farah?

Wow, but that was, that was so much noise, the car didn't go anywhere. It was so slow.

• 1:13:35Matt Farah?

That is what open headers on 190 horsepower looks like.

• 1:13:38Speaker 01

  It sounds like a NASCAR.

• 1:13:39Matt Farah?

It did sound like a NASCAR though.

• 1:13:41Speaker 02

I, I just want that noise.

• 1:13:43Matt Farah?

You don't want it quite that much.

• 1:13:44Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:13:44Matt Farah?

  You don't want it.

• 1:13:45Speaker 02

  I want a cutout.

• 1:13:46Matt Farah?

Don't you want a road trip in the car?

• 1:13:47Speaker 02

Oh, you want a cutout, okay. So I want to make it like, you know, normal and then setting off car alarms.

• 1:13:52Matt Farah?

It is actually, especially with this, with the, that chin splitter for that, that one, like that looks good.

• 1:13:59Speaker 02

  It's a pretty.

• 1:14:00Matt Farah?

  That's a good looking car.

• 1:14:01Speaker 02

It's a good looking car. And the US car looked so terrible that no one really knows what they look like.

• 1:14:06Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:06Speaker 02

But I don't actually like that chin splitter.

• 1:14:08Matt Farah?

Dude, the Jamie, the Goodwood Road and Racing on the right, Jamie Chadwick makes historic debut in V8 Rover SD1. That's the race car.

• 1:14:16Speaker 01

I just love the body lean that snaps back at like right gear.

• 1:14:21Speaker 02

  I mean, it's a livery axle.

• 1:14:23Matt Farah?

Real tight front end on that.

• 1:14:25Speaker 02

  With struts up front.

• 1:14:26Matt Farah?

Yeah, I just want to see, I want to see what the race car looks like.

• 1:14:29Speaker 02

  It's a TR8 underneath effectively. It's a Triumph TR7 with a V8.

• 1:14:33Matt Farah?

  Okay.

• 1:14:34Speaker 02

So fastest steering of any car in production at the time, longest fifth gear.

• 1:14:37Matt Farah?

  Oh, it's Marlboro livery?

• 1:14:40Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:14:40Matt Farah?

  Oh, dude.

• 1:14:42Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:14:42Matt Farah?

And that looks good as a fucking race car, doesn't it? Why are cigarette liveries so cool? Cause you wanna fucking smoke. Yeah, that's a good looking race car. I like that very much.

• 1:14:55Speaker 02

Yeah, so I will now have a

• 1:14:58Matt Farah?

  A hot rod.

• 1:14:59Speaker 02

Brand new engine, brand new four

• 1:15:01Matt Farah?

Pretty cool. Is the gearbox American in that car also?

• 1:15:03Speaker 02

  No, it's Triumph.

• 1:15:04Matt Farah?

  Oh.

• 1:15:05Speaker 02

Uh, actually, no, hold on. It was TR8. It was developed specifically for this car.

• 1:15:09Matt Farah?

Okay, so it's a British Leyland gearbox?

• 1:15:11Speaker 02

  British Leyland gearbox.

• 1:15:13Matt Farah?

Alright, can it handle double horsepower? Probably?

• 1:15:16Speaker 02

Yeah, because it won't get any more torque.

• 1:15:18Matt Farah?

  Okay.

• 1:15:18Speaker 02

Um, so it'll be, I mean, it was, they use them in the

• 1:15:20Matt Farah?

Oh, the, look, the race cars are, they actually don't have different bodies. They just really have cool liveries. That's, looks like an early car.

• 1:15:27Speaker 02

It should have a Vitesse, that was probably too early. So the Vitesse, there were two front spoilers. That's the rounded one you just saw on that car, on that roundabout, which I don't like. The earlier one was more angular, and I'm looking for one of them. Then they had a spoiler and

• 1:15:38Matt Farah?

  They probably don't exist.

• 1:15:40Speaker 02

They don't, they don't. And it's just, I did the Euro bumpers because the US bumpers were egregious. The US headlights were the most hideous thing you've ever seen.

• 1:15:47Matt Farah?

US bumpers are always bad. Pick a car.

• 1:15:49Speaker 02

  Yeah, but

• 1:15:50Matt Farah?

Is there any, is there any car that

• 1:15:51Speaker 02

  USA spec.

• 1:15:52Matt Farah?

Any car that had a good US bumper?

• 1:15:55Speaker 02

  Better than Euro, no.

• 1:15:56Matt Farah?

No. What was the worst, the worst offenders, I mean, Countach is

• 1:16:00Speaker 02

Cherokee 16 valve was pretty terrible.

• 1:16:03Matt Farah?

Worse than a Countach one? No, Countach.

• 1:16:05Speaker 02

  Yeah, look at that front.

• 1:16:06Matt Farah?

Whoa, wow. That is a trumps.

• 1:16:09Speaker 02

  I'm gonna make vomit.

• 1:16:10Matt Farah?

That's what, the, the one, how about the one downstairs on that Espada?

• 1:16:14Speaker 02

  They're pretty

• 1:16:14Matt Farah?

The US bumper on that Espada is really bad.

• 1:16:18Speaker 02

Oh, I just saw another car that, the bumper was like two and a half feet long and I just couldn't stop laughing. What the hell was it?

• 1:16:25Speaker 02

But Cherokee 16 valves, one of the worst.

• 1:16:27Matt Farah?

Uh, we have, uh, okay, I wanna hear before we, um, we have, we can pick one of two topics before we go to the, the people.

• 1:16:36Speaker 02

  Sure.

• 1:16:36Matt Farah?

Do you want to tell me about filming in Chuckwalla? Because you really had a story about that that you wanted to talk about. Or do you wanna talk about the manual swapped CLK Black Series? Because Zach and I are gonna go drive a manual swapped SL55 next week. And I have a theory that if it can be done more affordably than with the Ferraris, manual swapped 2000's era Mercedes could be an untapped, uh, area of fun for enthusiasts.

• 1:17:09Speaker 02

Oh my god, I wanna talk about all of them, both of them.

• 1:17:11Matt Farah?

  Pick one.

• 1:17:14Speaker 02

  Black series.

• 1:17:15Matt Farah?

Black series, okay. They'll learn about Chuck Waller later.

• 1:17:17Speaker 02

  I drove them.

• 1:17:19Matt Farah?

You drove a manual swap CLK black series, like an oh eight or something, right?

• 1:17:24Speaker 02

Um, it was oh seven. Um, I've driven a lot of manual swap cars. Um, most of them suck. You have throttle calibration issues, you know, a lot of, and Mercedes especially does very strange throttle calibration where you have kind of nothing, nothing, nothing and very linear build. Um, and I expected this car to be a basket case. The guy who did it is a guy named Matt Quick, K W I E K. Um, and he's in like Kentucky, Tucky or Tennessee, Tucky. Um, and he used all factory Mercedes parts on this. So everything is a Mercedes part, except for the driveshaft, I think was the only one he had to modify. It one, other than the fact that it was telling you had no ESP. Because it was looking, the stability control is looking for a, a signal from the transmission.

• 1:18:08Speaker 02

It felt one hundred percent. I'm sorry, the only non-factory part on that car was the clutch disc.

• 1:18:14Matt Farah?

  Oh, sure.

• 1:18:14Speaker 02

Which you got from someone and wouldn't tell me who it was and whatever, whatever. It's a clutch disc. Um, car felt like it could have come from the factory, looked and felt and drove like it could have come from the factory. And all I can say is, we didn't know that that six point two liter has throttle response to rival an S sixty five, meaning the BMW. M E ninety, M three, eight throttle body V eight. It throttle response is amazing. That car is brilliant to drive with a stick. I want one.

• 1:18:42Matt Farah?

I drove back in the day, a CLK four thirty sport that had a manual swap.

• 1:18:49Speaker 02

What the fuck would do that?

• 1:18:50Matt Farah?

I mean, I don't know. It was whatever. I was shocked at how much, how like sporty it actually was and how much the gearbox like really just sucked the life right out of it. So we're driving this SL fifty and I expect the SL.

• 1:19:03Speaker 02

Fifty five or fifty five K. So it's supercharged or naturally aspirated?

• 1:19:06Matt Farah?

No, it's a su- and a supercharged. There never was a naturally aspirated SL, fifty five.

• 1:19:12Speaker 02

So I've also driven, Matt swapped a, did a fifty five swap on a one twenty six coupe. I drove.

• 1:19:20Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:19:20Speaker 02

And that was, that car itself was a little bit rough around the edges. It was pretty fun. And then I just drove a 55K swapped Pagoda that he drove.

• 1:19:28Matt Farah?

Oh, that's like what Mechatronic is doing, shit like that.

• 1:19:31Speaker 02

  That was fucking nuts.

• 1:19:33Matt Farah?

  I bet that was unhinged.

• 1:19:34Speaker 02

  Absolute stupidity.

• 1:19:36Matt Farah?

  Could you steer it?

• 1:19:37Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:19:38Matt Farah?

  Okay.

• 1:19:39Speaker 02

Couldn't control the goddamn thing. There were trees everywhere.

• 1:19:42Matt Farah?

  That seems really shady.

• 1:19:43Speaker 02

I mean, it, it worked, but the, the black series, I immediately called a friend who's got a friend who has a black series for sale. And I asked him if he would sell it to me and the guy's like, I would, that could be.

• 1:19:54Matt Farah?

What would, what would a swap cost?

• 1:19:56Speaker 02

  I don't know. I think 20.

• 1:19:58Matt Farah?

Yeah. A Ferrari is like 25.

• 1:20:00Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:20:01Matt Farah?

I, I was thinking to, to be something that could be mass adopted, it would probably have to cost like 10 to 15, not 20.

• 1:20:07Speaker 02

You can do it yourself. I mean.

• 1:20:13Speaker 02

So that car, the manual swap car that I drove, sold on.

• 1:20:17Matt Farah?

  That was the black car?

• 1:20:18Speaker 02

  It was a black one.

• 1:20:18Matt Farah?

  What did it go for?

• 1:20:19Speaker 02

  I don't know.

• 1:20:20Matt Farah?

  Can you?

• 1:20:21Speaker 02

There was no mileage. I want a mile, I want a driver. Um, it was.

• 1:20:25Matt Farah?

  Oh, there.

• 1:20:26Speaker 02

There we go. Um, that, it was.

• 1:20:29Matt Farah?

So what was the shifter out of if it was a Mercedes?

• 1:20:32Speaker 02

  Probably an SLK.

• 1:20:33Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:20:33Speaker 02

  Or a Chrysler Crossfire.

• 1:20:34Matt Farah?

Was the gearbox an SLK gearbox?

• 1:20:36Speaker 02

I don't remember what, because I've driven a bunch of his swap cars and I don't remember which one was which. They're all Mercedes parts, so it's gotta be either like a diesel, um, to be able to handle the torque.

• 1:20:46Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:20:47Speaker 02

What are the diesel six speeds or, um, uh, Crossfire six speed, i.e. SLK?

• 1:20:52Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:20:53Speaker 02

Um, but I don't, this is what, six months ago, four months ago?

• 1:20:57Matt Farah?

I'll find it. How, I mean, it, it, it kinda makes you disappointed that they never offered the car like that. Mercedes is so fucking stupid. Probably could've.

• 1:21:04Speaker 02

  They should've.

• 1:21:04Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:05Speaker 02

I mean, if, if he's using nothing but, if Matt's using nothing but Mercedes parts on it, except for a clutch disc. It was all Lego and they could've done it.

• 1:21:12Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:13Speaker 02

  I would, I would.

• 1:21:14Matt Farah?

I wonder if it'll hold, if it would hold, I mean, I don't, devil's advocate, I wonder if it would hold up to Mercedes durability cycle?

• 1:21:20Speaker 02

It's not that much torque compared to the diesels that, you know, and also the SLK 32.

• 1:21:25Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:27Speaker 02

Which I think was available as a manual?

• 1:21:29Matt Farah?

  Yes. In Europe, maybe.

• 1:21:31Speaker 02

  In the Crossfire.

• 1:21:32Matt Farah?

Not in the, oh, the Crossfire, yeah.

• 1:21:34Speaker 02

Didn't have that much more, uh, less torque.

• 1:21:36Matt Farah?

Hundred, it got a hundred and thirty-eight grand, which honestly, you said it had no miles on it?

• 1:21:41Speaker 02

  Twenty-eight thousand.

• 1:21:42Matt Farah?

Yeah, which I consider no on a car like that. That's, that's, that's mild to medium for one of these. That's actually like.

• 1:21:49Speaker 02

I think that car did well.

• 1:21:50Matt Farah?

I think that's what it would have gotten with, if it was stock. I think, I think, I think the gearbox didn't really add much value, but it also didn't.

• 1:22:00Speaker 02

  I don't track the price.

• 1:22:01Speaker 01

There's a same year, same color, same mileage, basically, auto, and it went for ninety-two. Condition can be different, but a quick glance.

• 1:22:08Matt Farah?

  Went for ninety-two?

• 1:22:09Speaker 01

  Ninety-two.

• 1:22:10Matt Farah?

Holy shit, you can get a fucking black series for under a hundred K still with like.

• 1:22:14Speaker 02

  Oh, god, yeah.

• 1:22:15Matt Farah?

  Really?

• 1:22:15Speaker 02

  That's why I want one.

• 1:22:16Matt Farah?

  Oh.

• 1:22:17Speaker 02

There was the one that I'm looking at is ninety-two thousand miles on it.

• 1:22:20Matt Farah?

And it's, oh, and it's like, that's gotta be cheap. Ninety-two thousand miles.

• 1:22:23Speaker 02

  Yeah, I'm cheap.

• 1:22:24Matt Farah?

  Yeah, that's gotta be cheap.

• 1:22:25Speaker 01

  Results.

• 1:22:25Matt Farah?

  Okay, wait, oh.

• 1:22:26Speaker 02

  Oh, wow.

• 1:22:27Matt Farah?

Oh, most of these are a lot cheaper than I thought.

• 1:22:29Speaker 02

They're not bad. You wanna talk about especially, they made, what, a hundred and fifty for the US market?

• 1:22:34Matt Farah?

They're rare, yeah. Twenty-eight kilo, twelve K mile for a buck and a quarter.

• 1:22:39Speaker 02

  Absolutely the best driving Mercedes.

• 1:22:41Matt Farah?

What's that silver one, oh, bid to, I want, I wanna see sold, wait, I wanna see, sold for seventy-nine. Sad, that one, what does seventy-nine grand get you on a?

• 1:22:50Speaker 02

Best driving Mercedes Benz of all time, without question.

• 1:22:53Matt Farah?

Silver, it is seventy-five thousand miles.

• 1:22:57Speaker 02

Head bolts replaced, which is the only thing you really need to do on them.

• 1:23:00Matt Farah?

Yeah. Well, if you were doing the, if you were doing a manual swap, that would be the kinda thing that could be done in a while you're in there, you know?

• 1:23:07Speaker 02

You probably, I, I assume he drops the powertrain out, drops the front side frame out?

• 1:23:11Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:11Speaker 02

  I don't know. Um.

• 1:23:12Matt Farah?

  Fuck.

• 1:23:13Speaker 01

Does he reprogram the throttle response and everything to better fit?

• 1:23:16Speaker 02

  He didn't have to.

• 1:23:16Speaker 01

  Didn't have to do it?

• 1:23:17Speaker 02

That's the crazy part, is from the factory, the throttle, throttle calibration was perfect for a manual. Perfect rev match heel and toes, the only thing that was non, non-op was ESP.

• 1:23:26Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:26Speaker 02

And a car with that much power, you know, I wouldn't mind having it, but I'll.

• 1:23:30Matt Farah?

You and I, you and I would be just fine without it. I'd be totally okay without it.

• 1:23:35Speaker 02

  Um.

• 1:23:35Matt Farah?

When I was, when I drove a couple of the manual swapped Ferraris, getting the ABS to work was the hard thing.

• 1:23:41Speaker 02

And the Ferrari stuff, I gotta, so, so I've driven a bunch of F-four thirties that were swapped.

• 1:23:47Speaker 02

This is one of those things that are really hard to admit. They're not great. Because the engine, that flat plane crank V8, for the Formula One, the F1 cars, paddle shift cars, they put no flywheel on it.

• 1:23:59Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:24:00Speaker 02

And so your absolute fastest shift, let's say you do a 3-4, which is a really fast shift, right? You still can't catch the revs on the way down.

• 1:24:07Matt Farah?

You have to feather the throttle.

• 1:24:09Speaker 02

  Throttle on the shift.

• 1:24:10Matt Farah?

But you, yeah, and you kinda, you kinda didn't on the, uh, on the real ones.

• 1:24:18Speaker 02

They were better, but they were not good enough.

• 1:24:20Matt Farah?

I really liked the manual 430 that I drove. I liked the original one I drove, and I thought that

• 1:24:26Speaker 02

  Like them.

• 1:24:27Matt Farah?

The swapped one I drove was fun.

• 1:24:29Speaker 02

The one that I liked the best actually was, um, the one that was chopped up into that M80 Nustrados.

• 1:24:36Matt Farah?

  Oh.

• 1:24:37Speaker 02

  Oh my god.

• 1:24:38Matt Farah?

  Why do you think?

• 1:24:39Speaker 02

Oh, just because the body of the car. It was like driving in a lease.

• 1:24:42Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:24:42Speaker 02

But it was such a chore to shift fat. You get used to it, you can drive around it, but, um, this was a better manual than the Ferrari.

• 1:24:49Matt Farah?

Yeah, when you have a super light flywheel, uh, and a gated shifter, that becomes hard. Like when you've got like your 308 or my 328, or even a 360. A 360 is about the limit.

• 1:25:02Speaker 02

  The limit.

• 1:25:03Matt Farah?

Where you don't have to do the feathery bits anymore.

• 1:25:04Speaker 02

And even the 308, I tend to double clutch even upshifts.

• 1:25:07Matt Farah?

  You do?

• 1:25:08Speaker 02

Here's why. That, all of the Ferrari dogleg gearboxes are, when they're cold.

• 1:25:13Matt Farah?

When they're cold, I skip second. Yeah, I skip shifts second when they're cold.

• 1:25:16Speaker 02

And just because I know, second is not even gonna happen, right?

• 1:25:20Matt Farah?

First and second ratio is so close together in the 328 also, that you can skip shift and people won't even notice.

• 1:25:27Speaker 02

I start out in second, uh, when it's cold. Because once I've covered a half and, half a mile in second gear, then second gear's warm enough.

• 1:25:33Matt Farah?

Yeah, yeah. For, for my car, it was like half a mile to a mile, you could use second.

• 1:25:37Speaker 02

And then, but driving normally, but if you're in second, so I live on a hill and I start out in second, and so by the bottom of the hill, I know second is warm enough that I can go into.

• 1:25:45Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:25:46Speaker 02

But second is a 51 mile an hour gear in that car. Anyway, so it's stupid, stupid short. Um, but I tend to, I double clutch on an upshift. Anytime the engine, oh, the transmission. cold which is

• 1:25:57Matt Farah?

  sure

• 1:25:57Speaker 02

  time you're driving anyway

• 1:25:58Matt Farah?

  yeah

• 1:25:59Speaker 02

you know especially in all cars and so it slows that down

• 1:26:02Matt Farah?

I did I did the skip shift my car never required double double clutching but and and Donny always told me that he for all the rebuilds he did he said he's never had to rebuild a 328 gearbox he said it's basically indestructible

• 1:26:15Speaker 02

  they're miserable but indestructible

• 1:26:16Matt Farah?

yeah yeah yeah yeah when they're warm they're fucking great yeah

• 1:26:21Speaker 02

I love my 308 I adore that car

• 1:26:23Matt Farah?

I I had a really good time in my 328 I don't miss it per se um but I will definitely be buying another transition era Ferrari at some point

• 1:26:34Speaker 02

  you should probably drive a 308 GT4

• 1:26:36Matt Farah?

I know they're really light and fun everybody likes them

• 1:26:39Speaker 02

I mean it shits on every other mid-engine I've driven them all

• 1:26:42Matt Farah?

  it's a Dino underneath not a 308 underneath

• 1:26:44Speaker 02

and I just drove a 348 we actually in the ZR1 we did icons on ZR1 and we had all the all the Corvettes and then a bunch of the Ferraris

• 1:26:52Matt Farah?

  C4 ZR1s are a pretty good time they're a good time

• 1:26:56Speaker 02

  that and

• 1:26:57Matt Farah?

25 grand for one of those is money really well spent

• 1:27:00Speaker 02

dick eggplant purple it was gorgeous that fucking car was gorgeous

• 1:27:04Matt Farah?

  it's aubergine

• 1:27:06Speaker 02

it's whatever the fuck you want to call it it was fucking amazing looking and then we had a 348 Zeris Speciale so we had a Speciale there I I could fucking couldn't contain the drool looking at that thing but to drive

• 1:27:21Matt Farah?

what year was that the Serie Speciale the only the only decent year for the 348 was 94 the rest of them are

• 1:27:29Speaker 02

the rest of like the Speciale lost the grill on the rear taillights and it doesn't it's not as pretty as that

• 1:27:35Matt Farah?

348s are a great 610s car if you want to go for a nice cruise they're cool

• 1:27:40Speaker 02

actually actually that I slid that car around this I didn't mean to it wouldn't understeer it was all ass all the time which is probably why Montezemolo hated it because on the road maybe that's scary on the track that was predictable I got out of it Randy Pope is like what are you doing to that old car be nice to it I'm like here's the keys dickbag and he immediately slid it around and he was like this thing is magic but the ZR1

• 1:28:04Matt Farah?

  ZR1s are so

• 1:28:05Speaker 02

shocked the shit out of all of us Who knows C4ZR1's, another one, will not understeer.

• 1:28:10Matt Farah?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:28:10Speaker 02

And it's just the most progressive slides and what a car.

• 1:28:14Matt Farah?

Those cars, they don't look like much, but goddamn are they, they are exceptionally good to drive. Yeah, yeah, they're fun. I had, this is gonna sound very quiet, I had a tennis instructor.

• 1:28:27Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 1:28:28Matt Farah?

When I was in high school that drove one of those. And I don't know.

• 1:28:32Speaker 02

Who was he fucking that he could drive?

• 1:28:34Matt Farah?

  Exactly. Like who's, who's fucking?

• 1:28:36Speaker 02

  All the moms.

• 1:28:36Matt Farah?

And actually, this guy went from a Lumina Z34 Euro.

• 1:28:41Speaker 02

  Damn.

• 1:28:41Matt Farah?

The 4Cam Lumina to the ZR1. So he was clearly, had a fetish for American 4Cam engines. Um, but was clearly kept by some Greenwich woman.

• 1:28:51Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:28:52Matt Farah?

Um, but he let me drive that motherfucker in high school. It was like a 95 ZR1. That, that left a mark, that car. I, I couldn't, could not believe it.

• 1:29:02Speaker 02

I can't believe the amount of noise and just great driving experience you get per dollar.

• 1:29:08Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:29:09Speaker 02

  Like that thing.

• 1:29:09Matt Farah?

  They're 25, 30 grand.

• 1:29:12Speaker 02

I will say that the purple one drove nothing like the, so handling, 11 out of 10, one of my, one of the best handling cars I've ever driven in my life.

• 1:29:19Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:29:19Speaker 02

The red one that I did the revelations video on it sounded twice as good. So I called the guy who owned that and he's like.

• 1:29:25Matt Farah?

  Were they different years?

• 1:29:26Speaker 02

Yeah, that, the red one was a, uh, first year, so 90.

• 1:29:30Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:29:31Speaker 02

  This one was a 94.

• 1:29:32Matt Farah?

Yeah, yeah. Which did you like better?

• 1:29:33Speaker 02

  The, the 90.

• 1:29:35Matt Farah?

  You did?

• 1:29:35Speaker 02

Yes, except it had the full power light on, which kinda.

• 1:29:39Matt Farah?

The 90 is the square nose, the 94 is the round nose. The 90 is weird because it has a square nose, but a round rear. That was the first Corvette to do that. And then it went to a round nose for the 94, 95.

• 1:29:51Speaker 02

You know what? I never even noticed the face.

• 1:29:52Matt Farah?

  Seriously?

• 1:29:53Speaker 02

  Totally never.

• 1:29:54Matt Farah?

You have to notice it because in one of the best car flub scenes in film of all time, Wesley Snipes leaves a restaurant in passenger 57, driving a square nose Corvette and arrives at his meeting in a round nose Corvette.

• 1:30:08Matt Farah?

  His car changes generation.

• 1:30:10Speaker 02

This episode is sponsored by the Autism Awareness Fund.

• 1:30:12Matt Farah?

It's one cut, nothing happens in between. Departure, arrival, different generation of car. Nothing.

• 1:30:18Speaker 02

How the fuck did that happen?

• 1:30:18Matt Farah?

It is one cut and nothing happens in between.

• 1:30:22Speaker 02

Okay. It's insanity. But they're, for whatever reason.

• 1:30:26Matt Farah?

So you like the early car?

• 1:30:26Speaker 02

Because that late car, I started to think maybe, so you know they have 11 throttles in them. So they have the regular throttle body and then they have another, hold on, let me do this correctly. There are eight ITBs, so there's 16 runners.

• 1:30:41Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:30:42Speaker 02

Then there's a, the main throttle and then two others.

• 1:30:46Matt Farah?

  Okay.

• 1:30:47Speaker 02

Right? At, when you start the car, it's in regular power mode, you need the key to turn to like full power mode.

• 1:30:52Matt Farah?

  Right, yeah, yeah.

• 1:30:53Speaker 02

Regular power mode fires eight injectors, the biggest injectors that they can put in that would, could, could fuel it at idle smoothly.

• 1:31:02Matt Farah?

  Okay.

• 1:31:03Speaker 02

So eight runners and on the low lift cam lobes, this is fucking crazy, this is pre-VTEC shit. So eight of the intake valves had, were on low lift and they had eight injectors on them and that's all the car ran on unless you were in full power mode. Full power mode at 4,000 or 3,800 or whatever it was, under full throttle, would flip open the butterflies, breathe through the second set of intake runners and the second set of intake valves that rode on cams that were longer duration and higher lift and then fired eight other injectors to fuel those. And so you get a VTEC like changeover.

• 1:31:43Speaker 02

And the 94 never sounded like it, it opened up. Now, it pulled all the way to seven grand in full power mode and ran out of steam at 5,500 in regular, so it was doing something, but it felt slow and it didn't sound violent.

• 1:31:58Matt Farah?

I wonder if it's one of those things that like, even though it was better, customers complained about it.

• 1:32:04Speaker 02

  Could be.

• 1:32:05Matt Farah?

And they said, alright, let's like smooth this transition out, because people don't like the off cam, on cam thing.

• 1:32:11Speaker 02

It wasn't, you didn't feel a nudge like you did in VTEC, but you definitely heard something and I think this car just might have not been, either it was a change that they made between 90 and 94, but whatever, that 90, I have an iPhone video of it accelerating towards me, that I could probably.

• 1:32:26Matt Farah?

  They're, they're very underrated and they don't.

• 1:32:31Matt Farah?

They don't drive like they look. They look like they won't drive great, but the steering is like crazy sharp.

• 1:32:38Speaker 02

  Steering's good.

• 1:32:39Matt Farah?

The ride is really nice, um, and they're a bitch to get in and out of, but they're actually pretty comfortable when you're sitting in there.

• 1:32:45Speaker 02

The side sill is so stupid. And look, that interior is.

• 1:32:47Matt Farah?

Oh, it's janky. Yeah, yeah. But like, you want to go fast for, for 25,000, 30,000 bucks. That's a fucking hell of a car. They're fun.

• 1:32:57Speaker 02

When the hell did I do that Revelations episode? Cause I have this video as the noise. So we weren't really gonna, I didn't think anything of it. No one's ever talked about that. That like changeover. And then I started doing research on this engine. It's like, wait a second. This is basically VTEC without the VTEC.

• 1:33:13Matt Farah?

  Mercury Marine.

• 1:33:14Speaker 02

Mercury. Well, hold on. Mercury Marine cast the block and, and assembled the engines. Lotus did.

• 1:33:21Matt Farah?

No, I know, I know Lotus did all the top end work on it, right?

• 1:33:24Speaker 02

  No, whole engine.

• 1:33:25Matt Farah?

  Did the whole engineering work?

• 1:33:26Speaker 02

Entire engine from start to finish. No one knows this. Everyone thinks it's a Mercury Marine. It's 100% Lotus. That LT5 was 100% Lotus. The only thing they shared with any GM product was the bore spacing because GM said a small block must have.

• 1:33:38Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:33:39Speaker 02

  Whatever the fuck.

• 1:33:40Matt Farah?

No, it's a kick ass engine.

• 1:33:41Speaker 02

  Yeah, I'm hoping.

• 1:33:42Matt Farah?

I do like a C4ZR1. Let's go to the people. Cause otherwise we'll be here all goddamn day and you gotta drive a French car seven hours home. It won't be seven hours.

• 1:33:52Speaker 02

This time I'm not locking it and.

• 1:33:54Matt Farah?

You're, the problem is you're gonna want to take the 101. You're not gonna want to take the 5.

• 1:33:58Speaker 02

I just, I, we just shot for five days. 121 degrees. Actual ambient air temperature. Do you know what that felt like?

• 1:34:06Matt Farah?

It's, I've, yes, I've been to fucking the Arabian Desert.

• 1:34:09Speaker 02

We got yelled at by the EMT. And when we were done filming, he walked in, he goes, thanks for not needing me. Don't do this again. We're like, that's, we're paid you to be here.

• 1:34:17Matt Farah?

Um, speaking of paying to be here, so have our patrons at patreon.com slash the smoking tire podcast.

• 1:34:24Speaker 02

Am I getting a cut of this?

• 1:34:24Matt Farah?

And no, uh, and speaking of, uh, paying to be here, uh, the smoking tires coming to Texas. We are going to be doing live shows in Houston on July 24th. And Dallas on July 25th with Christian James Hand. Um, Dallas, dude, they're filling up quick.

• 1:34:41Matt Farah?

We have a big time fanbase in Texas, so come on down, have a fucking cocktail with the boys. We are, uh, and, and I mean honestly, you get to listen to us bitch at each other for a couple hours, but, but really you get to see Christian James Hand perform, which is a privilege for all of us. Can we, can we say that he's gonna be doing what he's gonna be doing? Do you think he'd want us to share?

• 1:35:02Speaker 01

I think he likes to win some surprises.

• 1:35:03Matt Farah?

Okay, we're not, I mean, he's gonna be doing his show, but I don't wanna say what song.

• 1:35:06Speaker 02

Whatever it is he's doing will be the most amazing experience of your life.

• 1:35:09Matt Farah?

He's gonna, he's doing songs that are, um, uh, sort of car people, um, themed. That'll be good. It'll be, it'll be a lot of fun. Yeah, getting to see him do his show is great.

• 1:35:20Speaker 02

  I found the video.

• 1:35:21Matt Farah?

  Oh, okay, cool.

• 1:35:22Speaker 02

I'm sorry, sorry it took so long.

• 1:35:23Matt Farah?

No, let's hear, let's listen to his ER1.

• 1:35:24Speaker 02

This is just an iPhone recording.

• 1:35:26Matt Farah?

  Okay, iPhone 3?

• 1:35:30Matt Farah?

  Listen.

• 1:35:34Matt Farah?

Oh yeah, you can hear it switch cams.

• 1:35:36Speaker 02

  And you're that.

• 1:35:39Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:35:39Speaker 02

  It's nuts.

• 1:35:40Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:35:45Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:35:45Matt Farah?

  What a lovely.

• 1:35:45Speaker 02

I sent that to the owner and he's like, oh, I'm putting my, about, he gave me, he had a Borla on it and he didn't really, he didn't tell me. Look, I'm putting the Borla back on. I had to put it in stock cause he brought it to Bowling Green and they give you like some like, some 100 point rating and he got like, he had to put the original exhaust back on to get his 100 point. And I'm like, dude, get that fuck.

• 1:36:04Matt Farah?

He wouldn't let me park it in Corvette Rogue, it had a Borla on it.

• 1:36:08Speaker 02

It had the wrong brand of battery or some shit and they docked him a point, whatever. Fucking weirdo, all concourse.

• 1:36:13Matt Farah?

Concourse people, concor, are you going to Pebble by the way?

• 1:36:16Speaker 02

Yeah, of course, I'll be there. I'll be there for the week. I don't know if I'll be there for the concourse on Sunday.

• 1:36:19Matt Farah?

  Uh, you're going to Quail?

• 1:36:21Speaker 02

  I don't know.

• 1:36:22Matt Farah?

  I'm showing my Manx.

• 1:36:23Speaker 02

  Oh, you fucking.

• 1:36:24Matt Farah?

Are you, but you're gonna be in Motor Lux.

• 1:36:26Speaker 02

I will be in Motor Lux.

• 1:36:27Matt Farah?

So, do you know what I'm doing at Motor Lux? I'm towing my Manx to Pebble with a Benteiga. I have the only, I have the only tow package equipped Benteke press car in the country they got for me. And you're towing a radial-engined Manx. Yeah, and I'm showing the whole rig at Motor Lux, driving it right in together. I am apparently going to have two of my cars at Motor Lux. Cool. E30 wagon and the Cosworth 190. Oh, fun, yeah. Which I'm looking forward to. But I haven't, you know, Quail yet. I'll be at Legends because I'm a German car whore. They're putting, my car's gonna be in the Manx booth at Quail. And Road and Track is a Quail sponsor. Anyone listening to this who works for the Quail Motorsport Gathering, please give me a ticket. Yeah, we could probably, you can get a press pass. To Quail?

• 1:37:12Matt Farah?

Yes. When did that happen? Now. Submit your application. Hey Siri, remind me to get a press pass. I will, we will connect later. You 100% could get a press pass to Quail. That is, it's become a press event. No, no, you, you, you can and you will. You will just make sure you're the right person. If you, it would be insane if you didn't get a press pass. I've been kicked out of far more places.

• 1:37:35Matt Farah?

Fucking McDonald's, Chick-fil-A ones. Right, wait, hang on, the Patriots, we got, these people deserve to be here, goddammit. I'm not, not me. You heard it here, I'm not getting a ticket. Patreon.com/thesmokingtirepodcast, ask your questions, get them answered on the show, watch the live stream, get the show before everybody else, get an ad-free listening experience, get exclusive access to TST merch and collabs, and a whole lot more. Extra podcasts also, you get extra podcasts. So good at this upsell bullshit. I just bought a t-shirt that said jasonsentme.com. That's right. Listen, you just convinced me to do fucking 20 minutes on why Hagerty's a good insurance company. So I'd say you, I'd say you fucking scammed me. Hey, McKeel, I want a raise. I'd say you fucking scammed the, you scammed the shit out of me on this one.

• 1:38:17Matt Farah?

Listen, I want people to be protected. Like, the amount of people that come over to me like, oh, fucking Progressive went and stole my car. Well, you're an asshole. You already did your goddamn plug.

• 1:38:27Speaker 02

  It wasn't even a plug.

• 1:38:28Matt Farah?

My dog's manservant says, "Since your VW head, would you ever add a Golf R or R32 to your collection?"

• 1:38:38Speaker 02

Uh, no, because I'm not a fan of all-wheel-drive, especially front-wheel-drive-based all-wheel-drive systems, because if I'm going to have front-wheel-drive, I want to be able to do burnouts. With that said, a Mark IV R32 sounds amazing. I love it. I adore it.

• 1:38:51Matt Farah?

Mark IV R32 is a nice car.

• 1:38:53Speaker 02

  Great-looking.

• 1:38:53Matt Farah?

  It's a great-looking car.

• 1:38:55Speaker 02

  Sounds, looks, feels, smells.

• 1:38:58Matt Farah?

  Best-looking modern Volkswagen, definitely.

• 1:39:00Speaker 02

Yeah, I'd agree with that, yeah.

• 1:39:02Matt Farah?

Uh, Jin in Taconic State Parkway, "Absolutely love it. What made you start the Excel file?"

• 1:39:08Speaker 02

  Of everything I've ever driven.

• 1:39:09Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:10Speaker 02

I had previously kept a sort of a log of all the cars that I'd driven, but when I started in the business, I very quickly realized I would ask people, like, "What did you think of this?" And they'd be like, "Eh, I don't remember." And so, it was actually even right before I started at Automobile, and I sort of made the decision, "Let me keep my thoughts organized, because at some point, these will become unmanageable." And that has happened, towards, we're 19 years, so it helps a lot.

• 1:39:33Matt Farah?

  Makes sense.

• 1:39:34Speaker 02

  Helps a lot.

• 1:39:34Matt Farah?

Uh, Joe says, "If Jason could engine swap anything in your garage, what would you choose?"

• 1:39:39Speaker 02

I would have engine swapped the Lotus Elise. I would have case swapped it.

• 1:39:42Matt Farah?

  Honda?

• 1:39:43Speaker 02

Honda, yeah, and then I would have kept it.

• 1:39:45Matt Farah?

Hmm. Uh, M3 Seashells says, "What new car model is everyone most looking forward to?"

• 1:39:53Speaker 02

  Rivian R3.

• 1:39:54Matt Farah?

The R3? Yes. It looks very nice. Have you noticed that nobody's been talking about the Ioniq 5N with the Nobby tires? That already kind of looks like that a little bit, though?

• 1:40:04Speaker 02

  Yeah, but it doesn't.

• 1:40:05Matt Farah?

  It kind of does.

• 1:40:06Speaker 02

It kind of does, yeah, it does, but not good, no.

• 1:40:08Matt Farah?

  It's not as...

• 1:40:09Speaker 02

The thing, my, if the Ioniq 5N or the Ioniq 5 was the size it looks...

• 1:40:13Matt Farah?

  Right, right, right.

• 1:40:14Speaker 02

If it was Golf size, I'd only want...

• 1:40:16Matt Farah?

  That's true.

• 1:40:16Speaker 02

  I like little cars.

• 1:40:17Matt Farah?

I do, too. I, I, I like a little, I love a little car. Um, "I don't have to compensate," says, um, okay, whoa.

• 1:40:27Speaker 02

That was a slip of the tongue that I made.

• 1:40:29Matt Farah?

All right, wait, hang on a minute. I, I, there's a lot of, like, hypothetical stuff, but I do want to focus first on things that are like actual Jason knowledge. So, like, okay, Fridolin Cox says, "Did any of you ever drive an Audi A2?" That would be, uh, in a European. I've seen them in Europe, the little hatchbacks.

• 1:40:46Speaker 02

  Yeah, never drove one.

• 1:40:47Matt Farah?

They're kind of cute, but I think it's just a two-door version of an A3, right?

• 1:40:51Speaker 02

No, isn't it one size smaller?

• 1:40:52Matt Farah?

  Is it one size smaller?

• 1:40:53Speaker 02

  I think it is.

• 1:40:55Matt Farah?

I think all of those little cars are like nice to see and putter in, you know, putter around in in Europe, but I think they might not make so much sense in America.

• 1:41:02Speaker 02

  I mean, I want a Polo GTI.

• 1:41:03Matt Farah?

  Do you?

• 1:41:03Speaker 02

Yeah, or any of the little GTIs because I want something the size of my Mark I. My Mark VII Golf is too big. And it's a weird thing to say, but when you live in the Bay Area.

• 1:41:11Matt Farah?

Yeah, isn't like, I've found that in America, though, like granted, a car can be too big. Obviously, right? But I found that like, in a country with like more or less standardized parking spaces, that a car that's smaller than a certain size like stops being beneficial in America.

• 1:41:29Speaker 02

Because you don't live in San Francisco. I felt I agreed that way. In the Bay Area, you have no standardized parking spots.

• 1:41:36Matt Farah?

I guess New York City sometimes as well.

• 1:41:38Speaker 02

New York City, but a parking spot's a parking spot in New York. Doesn't matter whether it's an F-150.

• 1:41:41Matt Farah?

Well, there's some parking spaces that aren't metered where they're free and it actually doesn't.

• 1:41:44Speaker 02

And that's almost all of San Francisco, plus the roads are tiny. And they're just really narrow. And like all my friends have like a dinghy. They have an I-3 because it'll fit on their driveway between the garage door and the sidewalk. Little cars make sense in very few places in the US.

• 1:42:02Matt Farah?

Uh, BBQ Sauce on my titties says, are there any semi-modern performance cars that you or Randy have driven on the track that were slower than the grippy Pacifica camera car?

• 1:42:12Speaker 02

Uh, it's actually a Grand Caravan, even worse.

• 1:42:16Matt Farah?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:42:16Speaker 02

  Uh, and it with PS.

• 1:42:17Matt Farah?

Well, not necessarily. When we did Performance Cameravane of the Year three years ago, we had a Sienna. We had a short wheelbase Grand Caravan and the Pacifica, and the Grand Caravan did win.

• 1:42:28Speaker 02

  Did win.

• 1:42:29Matt Farah?

It was, it was the fastest.

• 1:42:30Speaker 02

If he's talking about my Van Gina, so my, our cameravane has a license plate on it Gina because her name is Gina and she's my van. So my Van Gina, uh, if that's BBQ Sauce.

• 1:42:40Matt Farah?

I think that's probably what, yeah.

• 1:42:42Speaker 02

Um, yeah, it happens all the time.

• 1:42:43Matt Farah?

Did you put sticky tires on it?

• 1:42:45Speaker 02

We did, we have all season fours.

• 1:42:46Matt Farah?

  Uh huh. Yeah, AS4, yeah.

• 1:42:48Speaker 02

Just the all seasons, um, which now have 21,000 miles of like track and horrible. And finally gave out this week at Chuck Walla in 120 degrees.

• 1:42:56Matt Farah?

  120 degrees, yeah.

• 1:42:57Speaker 02

Roasted. Half of the old cars that we, we shoot can't even come close to keeping up with it. Like the 348 couldn't keep up with it, the C4 Corvette couldn't even, I mean, not at all.

• 1:43:08Matt Farah?

  The ZR1?

• 1:43:09Speaker 02

  The ZR1.

• 1:43:09Matt Farah?

  Couldn't keep up with them.

• 1:43:10Speaker 02

Couldn't keep up with them, not around corners. And so I always have Anthony Esposito screaming at me on the radio like, "Come on, Jason, up, up, up, up, up." That's like, you know.

• 1:43:17Matt Farah?

Do those cars have good tires on them when you're driving them? Sometimes, yeah. Yeah, sometimes, sometimes not.

• 1:43:23Speaker 02

Sometimes, sometimes not, but, um, yeah, basically.

• 1:43:25Matt Farah?

There's no way a C4ZR1 with good tires on it isn't outhandling a minivan.

• 1:43:30Speaker 02

It's, it can probably, that van pulls stupid grip. Genuinely stupid grip. It happens a lot. It's funny when it happens. It makes us all laugh, but.

• 1:43:39Matt Farah?

We've had, I mean, we've, we've had similar things happen when we, you know, film, film, you know, whatever, classic cars.

• 1:43:46Matt Farah?

Front-wheel-drive NSX says, "In what world can we expect actual drivers' cars to make a return? Or are we just doomed to SUV hell?"

• 1:43:56Speaker 02

We are doomed to SUV hell, except that you can always buy old cars.

• 1:44:00Matt Farah?

Yeah, or if you're like really rich, you can buy amazingly analog cars.

• 1:44:04Speaker 02

This is the problem, right? You have to be really like.

• 1:44:06Matt Farah?

The problem is manual transmissions, um, analog gauge clusters, and cars without screens cost fucking seven figures.

• 1:44:16Speaker 02

Yeah, you're totally right. Yeah, I think we're doomed to hell, and unfortunately it's gonna stay that way, but old cars.

• 1:44:21Matt Farah?

Elon's Musk, "Would you rather tag along on a peak-era Top Gear special or a parts-unknown shoot?"

• 1:44:28Speaker 02

Peak-era Top Gear special, because I could learn more.

• 1:44:31Matt Farah?

Yeah, I'd learn more about how to, how to make television, I suppose.

• 1:44:35Speaker 02

And Tony Bourdain, like, I never watched Anthony Bourdain's stuff. Like, that was just not my kind of thing. The traveling and drinking and, you know, getting hammered in far play, that's not my.

• 1:44:45Matt Farah?

Well, that was more no reservations. Once, once he became parts unknown on CNN, it was much more of like a cultural exploration kind of thing, set against a backdrop of food. Um, I've watched a lot of Anthony Bourdain, and, um, the way that they construct episodes, because he's like really heavily influenced by certain directors or, or whatever, certain musicians. And so they got pretty artsy, and I think you could probably learn a lot from one of those episodes as well. It wouldn't apply necessarily to what you do, but really studying it, it made me learn how much of Anthony. Bourdain's genius was in writing and then being able to read his own voiceover so well.

• 1:45:30Matt Farah?

As opposed to, he almost never said anything of real consequence in the moment.

• 1:45:35Speaker 02

  Neither did Clarkson.

• 1:45:36Matt Farah?

  Right, all, correct, also true.

• 1:45:38Speaker 02

Like, that's the trick. You look at, you know, he's driving straight on a runway, get all of his reaction shots.

• 1:45:43Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:45:43Speaker 02

And then all the information is delivered in voiceover, which of course I've studied and therefore.

• 1:45:46Matt Farah?

Yeah, yeah, which isn't, it's not like, wrong or bad, but when I, before he died, maybe a year before he died, I saw Anthony Bourdain do a talk at the Pentageus Theater, and it was awful.

• 1:45:57Speaker 02

  Really?

• 1:45:58Matt Farah?

  Awful.

• 1:45:58Speaker 02

I thought, I totally thought you were gonna say the opposite.

• 1:46:00Matt Farah?

Awful. Because he was just sort of pandering to a really low bar crowd, and he was like, "And this is when I got diarrhea in wherever," and this was, it was not some, it was not like, you know, "Here's what I know about the world from years of traveling." And then that's when I was like, "Wait a minute, how does this dude turn into that show?" And I went, "Oh, it's all, it's all in fucking diarying and voiceover."

• 1:46:25Speaker 02

Your audience right now. It's like, Cammisa's so put together on his show, and look at this. Fucked hard on, on this fucking button. Turns out.

• 1:46:33Matt Farah?

Writers good at writing. Um, let's see.

• 1:46:40Matt Farah?

Zack, clap in cheeks. Jason, thoughts on doing a PX-style video following another person that changed the industry?

• 1:46:49Speaker 02

Yeah, absolutely. We've thought about, I, I thought about doing Gordon Murray, and also recently, Akio, Toyota. But it's, it's tough to, to get the biography stuff right, and that's a lot of work, and I would absolutely do either one of them, but they're both alive, so I have to get it right.

• 1:47:11Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:47:12Speaker 02

And that's just a time sink that I would, I don't have right now, where I would do.

• 1:47:17Matt Farah?

Okay, Liang Ku says, "Fuck, marry, kill from each other's garage." Alright, so... I... okay.

• 1:47:27Speaker 02

Do you know, I don't even know your full garage.

• 1:47:30Matt Farah?

That's the problem. I'd sound like a real shitbag if I list them all off, wouldn't I?

• 1:47:33Speaker 02

  I know, that's the problem.

• 1:47:33Matt Farah?

I will, I will, but, okay, I will. I'll marry, uh, your Ferrari.

• 1:47:39Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:47:39Matt Farah?

Uh, I will, uh, fuck the bitch basket.

• 1:47:42Speaker 02

  Everyone.

• 1:47:43Matt Farah?

  Real hard.

• 1:47:44Speaker 02

  Yeah, everyone does.

• 1:47:44Matt Farah?

  Red line shifts.

• 1:47:45Speaker 02

  He did, it's great.

• 1:47:46Matt Farah?

Yeah, real hard, uh, and I would, and I would-

• 1:47:49Speaker 02

Good thing you didn't say you'd fuck my vagina.

• 1:47:50Matt Farah?

I would kill, I'd kill the, I'd kill the Rover just because I have to pick something and I'm not particularly interested in Rovers.

• 1:47:56Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:47:57Matt Farah?

Okay. I'll list them off, the Pink Spider, NSX, the Vanquish with a manual. I mean, the Manx exists, although it's in parts until, you know, a couple of weeks. Lamborghini Countach exists, although it's in parts for like another year.

• 1:48:12Matt Farah?

Taycan, Hannah's Delica, Hannah's Nissan Pow, or a scooter.

• 1:48:17Speaker 02

Okay, definitely kill the NSX, because I hate NSCs.

• 1:48:20Matt Farah?

  Okay.

• 1:48:22Speaker 02

  I'd probably fuck the Countach.

• 1:48:24Matt Farah?

  Okay.

• 1:48:25Speaker 02

  Because everyone would.

• 1:48:26Matt Farah?

  Everyone would.

• 1:48:27Speaker 02

  And marry the pink car.

• 1:48:30Matt Farah?

  Okay. That's, I think that's a, a reasoned and reasonable choice.

• 1:48:35Speaker 02

  On brand for-

• 1:48:36Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:48:37Speaker 02

  Just fucking idiots.

• 1:48:38Matt Farah?

Pink car still has some warranty. Uh, let's see, uh, BushDid997, "Jason, what's the ultimate Icons episode you haven't been able to make yet?"

• 1:48:49Speaker 02

There was one episode I wanted to do with 9/11 ST plus Roof SCR plus Singer. Because I think, and we may still do it. I really think the 9/11 story is like a choose your own ending, right? 9/11 happened and then, then we had to make a decision between, we, the company had to make a decision, do we do like- Ultra high tech and really expensive, or do we do more mass market? And they've chosen more mass market and perfected it. Like, current 911 ST is the best sports car in the world, maybe potentially without T50. Roof went the other way.

• 1:49:20Matt Farah?

Yeah, let's say best sports car for less than a million bucks or something.

• 1:49:23Speaker 02

Best mass market sports car, nothing is even close.

• 1:49:26Matt Farah?

  Yeah, they're fucking rad.

• 1:49:27Speaker 02

And then roof, that SCR is like, holy fuck.

• 1:49:31Matt Farah?

Have you driven a CTR also?

• 1:49:34Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:49:35Matt Farah?

  Imagine.

• 1:49:36Speaker 02

  But I want, I don't, I want naturally aspirated.

• 1:49:37Matt Farah?

Alright, well just imagine that but with 50% more power.

• 1:49:41Speaker 02

But that thing, like, all carbon, like, it looks like a Porsche, but it's not, like, that's a different, choose your own adventure in the way of, like, let's take something the size and the shape of a 911 and make it bespoke and expensive and modern materials and equipment and new engine, whatever. And then you have Singer, which is, let's take the old thing and do it. And I want to get those three cars together.

• 1:49:59Matt Farah?

That is a real logistical challenge.

• 1:50:02Speaker 02

  Possible. The problem is...

• 1:50:04Matt Farah?

Well, I guess with Hagerty, you could have owner. You're more, much more likely to just get owner cars.

• 1:50:08Speaker 02

I've talked, I've talked to all of the companies about this. Singer, Singer tends to be a little bit shy.

• 1:50:12Matt Farah?

No, they keep that shit close to the vest, dude.

• 1:50:14Speaker 02

That, that, that would be the owner car.

• 1:50:17Matt Farah?

Have I told you the best way to get a Singer press car? It's really easy. No, the best way to get a Singer press car is to very publicly drive an owner's car.

• 1:50:25Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 1:50:25Matt Farah?

You'll have, they'll be calling you.

• 1:50:27Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:50:29Speaker 02

Mike, the question that I have for you and you and the audience is, does anyone give a shit about these 911s?

• 1:50:34Matt Farah?

Our Singer Turbo video did not do very well. Whereas our 911 ST video did do very well. So, you could chalk that up to, one is a new car and, and, and it's a, and our business is a, should you or shouldn't you buy this thing?

• 1:50:49Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:50:49Matt Farah?

And people who are looking for Singers already know if that's what they want or not. They don't need to know something about it from, from us.

• 1:50:55Speaker 02

I feel like even 911, like, any 911, everyone already knows it's the best. And so, you know, I don't, that roof is so...

• 1:51:03Matt Farah?

  Oh, good. Yeah, they're nuts.

• 1:51:04Speaker 02

That could really unseat the ST in a lot of ways. And I don't know until I've, I've driven them both. But it's also like actual carbon.

• 1:51:13Matt Farah?

No, it's crazy. No, I'm just, but like it's so.

• 1:51:15Speaker 02

  I don't know.

• 1:51:16Matt Farah?

There's scales of rich and that's one, one scale up.

• 1:51:19Speaker 02

And you know what I like better? Like our $35,000 challenge, Cooter. Cooter's Camisus Ultimate Drag Race Replay. That $35,000 challenge, like that was a lot of fun. Like, oh, we forgot about the Mini. We forgot about this. I sort of live in ghetto land and I feel like I'm just kind of sick about hearing rich people land.

• 1:51:34Matt Farah?

  Sure.

• 1:51:34Speaker 02

So I don't know if the audience would resonate with it and therefore is it worth the time for me to do that Icons? I don't know.

• 1:51:41Matt Farah?

I think it would be a fun thing to do.

• 1:51:43Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:51:45Matt Farah?

You know, to get to drive those cars back to back, I think would be a good time.

• 1:51:48Speaker 01

I think the challenge is finding the angle that a larger audience would understand.

• 1:51:53Speaker 02

Yeah, I don't, it's not like, I don't, the view count is not the be all and end all. But at the end of the day, I am paid by Hagerty to get eyeballs on what we do.

• 1:52:02Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:52:03Speaker 02

And I don't want to shortchange anyone. I don't want to say I'm going to take all this budget and do this, you know, and Icons, Icons are expensive and they're a lot of work. And I don't want to do that to just have it, have no one care about it. Like I did that with ID Buzz. No one watched that.

• 1:52:15Matt Farah?

  Well, the, yeah.

• 1:52:16Speaker 01

Like you could probably do a roof Icons video.

• 1:52:18Matt Farah?

  If you position it.

• 1:52:19Speaker 01

Better because they're a name that everyone knows and.

• 1:52:22Speaker 02

Right, and do the whole history. And otherwise it's like, the coolest.

• 1:52:26Matt Farah?

Yeah, he's the best, yeah. That, I think that's, that's probably your angle.

• 1:52:31Speaker 02

God damn it, I'm going to have to go to Germany.

• 1:52:32Matt Farah?

And then maybe, you know, if you're doing that, you kind of, you could wildcard it with an ST, you know, sort of comparison at the end. That could be fun. I would bring in the ST as the, and look what we have here. Here's what Porsche, here's what Porsche considers light, you know, and it's, oh, by the way, it's 600 pounds heavier.

• 1:52:51Speaker 02

You should do this for a living.

• 1:52:52Matt Farah?

I should, yeah. Does someone just give me a budget? That'd be great. Maybe after I just did a 20 minute Hagerty commercial, they'll give me a budget too.

• 1:52:59Speaker 02

Bullshit, they're not going to give me one. I will have you do a cameo on that video.

• 1:53:02Matt Farah?

Um, all right, two more and then we're calling the fucking game because Jason's got to go home. I like this one. Scandinavian booger flick. What are some cars that share similar driving characteristics despite looking nothing alike? We just sort of talked about the inverse of this, which is the roof, which looks like a 911, but drives very much not like a 911, um, and only looks like a 911, uh, as Cat Williams say, till a 911 pull up.

• 1:53:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:53:32Matt Farah?

Um, so what are some cars that drive similar but look very different? Wait, was that the question? Drive similar, look different, or drive different, look similar?

• 1:53:41Speaker 02

  Drive similar, look different.

• 1:53:41Matt Farah?

  Drive similar, look different.

• 1:53:43Speaker 02

You know what? Just about every modern car.

• 1:53:47Speaker 02

Because there's one formula. You're gonna have strut suspension up front and a multi-link in the rear. You're gonna have a 500cc per cylinder, turbocharged, four-cylinder, with a dual-clutch or a ZF88P. Everything.

• 1:53:57Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:53:58Speaker 02

That's a really great question, but I'd have to really go through my.

• 1:54:00Matt Farah?

Every, yeah, every $42,000 crossover drives basically exactly the same.

• 1:54:07Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:54:07Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:54:09Speaker 02

Every, I mean, it's all electric power steering.

• 1:54:10Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:54:11Speaker 02

They all two, they're all benchmarking each other, they're all sniffing each other's asses and running in circles.

• 1:54:14Matt Farah?

All right, let's flip it. What are some cars that look similar but drive totally different?

• 1:54:21Matt Farah?

Like, I would say like Huracan and McLaren Sports Series.

• 1:54:25Speaker 02

Yeah. McLaren drives like nothing else.

• 1:54:28Matt Farah?

  McLaren's drive very unique.

• 1:54:31Speaker 02

  That looks similar, I...

• 1:54:36Matt Farah?

  A Toyota MR2 and a Fiat X19.

• 1:54:40Speaker 02

I'm thinking of like Alpha 8, uh, 4C versus an Alus, right?

• 1:54:44Matt Farah?

Yeah, one drives good and one drives bad.

• 1:54:46Speaker 02

  Bad-ish. Not as good.

• 1:54:48Matt Farah?

I fucking hate 4Cs. They suck.

• 1:54:50Speaker 02

  And they're so pretty.

• 1:54:51Matt Farah?

  They're so pretty.

• 1:54:52Speaker 02

  Characterful.

• 1:54:52Matt Farah?

Time will be very kind to them.

• 1:54:54Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:54:55Matt Farah?

Because if it's pretty and characterful, that's all that matters.

• 1:54:58Speaker 02

  And hand-built.

• 1:54:58Matt Farah?

In a collectible. It doesn't matter that they actually understeer like fucking pigs.

• 1:55:04Speaker 02

Doesn't matter. No one's gonna ever track those cars.

• 1:55:06Matt Farah?

Who, tell me, Jason, who is the person that insists on manual steering paired with a flappy paddle gearbox? Who is that? Who is that client?

• 1:55:15Speaker 02

It was someone who couldn't afford, couldn't afford, and by the way, a dry dual-clutch from the Dodge Dart. Um, I actually love the 4C. I think it's, I love how Italian it is.

• 1:55:25Matt Farah?

  Agree to disagree.

• 1:55:28Matt Farah?

All right, this is a good one to end on, actually. Uh, Jerry was a steak F1 Teamkick Sauber driver. I, that combining Formula One and Primus, I think is really the peak.

• 1:55:38Speaker 02

So many references, I'm lost. It's fine.

• 1:55:41Matt Farah?

Let me just say, ChatGPT couldn't fucking do that.

• 1:55:44Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:55:44Matt Farah?

A hu- a human F1 satirist that also loves Primus needs to do that. Seeing the release of the Corvette ZR1X has me wondering, are we reaching the human limit of car performance? With the, these numbers, um, that seems like a lot more car than the average person can physically handle. Where does it go from here?

• 1:56:07Speaker 02

I feel like people have been saying that for a long time.

• 1:56:09Matt Farah?

  Long time.

• 1:56:10Speaker 02

  However.

• 1:56:11Matt Farah?

  People find a way.

• 1:56:13Speaker 02

People find a way, but what we are, we're definitely, we have reached and surpassed the limits of what we can use on the road. And we are actually reaching a limit in that the, after a certain amount of G-force, you can no longer see around a corner.

• 1:56:27Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:56:28Speaker 02

You can't see, your sight lines are now compromised because if you're at max latitude around a corner, you will not be able to stop before you hit something. So we're reaching a limit. We've reached the limit of sanity.

• 1:56:40Matt Farah?

  Right.

• 1:56:40Speaker 02

  And surpassed it by twofold.

• 1:56:43Matt Farah?

Yeah. I watched Chris Harris's F80 video yesterday. He's pretty much, some of your icons and Chris Harris sometimes is the only YouTube content I consume, god automotive content I consume at all. And he said that Ferrari has said that this, that the 1,200 horsepower combined that that thing makes is, that's it. There's, there's no need to make more power.

• 1:57:11Speaker 02

  There's never a need.

• 1:57:12Matt Farah?

Right, right. But this is what Ferrari is saying. So they're, they're saying that this is, you know.

• 1:57:17Speaker 02

We've reached the limits of grip.

• 1:57:18Matt Farah?

Yeah, for sure. For a road tire.

• 1:57:20Speaker 02

Lucid Sapphire is not going to accelerate any faster, no matter basically what tire you put on it.

• 1:57:25Matt Farah?

I think the new Niverra R just ran a seven second quarter mile.

• 1:57:30Speaker 02

  I mean, so.

• 1:57:31Matt Farah?

We'll have to get Miro back. He rules.

• 1:57:33Speaker 02

I mean, yes, but the, the, the truth is we've reached the lip of, limit of grip. The only question is at what speed, right? And so now if you're at the limit of grip from all the way to zero to six, you're at a 1.9 or two, two seconds, yay. But then you're reaching the limit of grip from 60 to 120 and then 120 to 180 and whatever, and it just becomes stupid. That fucking Lucid, I just had Drag Race.

• 1:57:56Matt Farah?

  The Sapphire?

• 1:57:57Speaker 02

No, not even the Sapphire. The Gravity.

• 1:57:59Matt Farah?

  The Gravity, yeah.

• 1:58:00Speaker 02

Dream Edition scared the shit out of me while I was testing it. That thing pulls so fucking hard from 70 to 130. I mean, 130, 10.5 at 139 in a minivan.

• 1:58:11Matt Farah?

That's, is that what you did? 10.5?

• 1:58:13Speaker 02

10.5 with, by the way. Secret, back behind the story shit, eighty something percent stayed at charge because we did not have time to fully charge it. It might even be fast, one hundred and thirty-nine miles an hour through the quarter mile.

• 1:58:25Matt Farah?

Zach and I in the Sapphire at Sonoma ran an eight-nine at one fifty-six unprepped.
