Support for the show comes from Jira by Atlassian. AI is only as useful as the context it has to work from, but when that context is scattered across tools, threads, and DMs, that means your team and your AI agents end up flying blind. That's the problem that Jira solves. What's the goal tied to your project? What got decided last week in Slack? Atlassian's teamwork graph pulls all these pieces together, from Jira, Confluence, Slack, GitHub, and more, so nothing falls through the cracks. With Jira, you can actually share that context with the AI agents you already use, like Claude, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot, assign them work directly, or connect your agents through MCP. Spend less time digging through endless links and DMs, less time chasing down what got decided and by

I just want to say, the Xbox 25th Anniversary Xbox Series X25, in transparent green.

• 1:28David Imel?

Is that the [bleep] name of the thing?

• 1:31Andrew Manganelli?

They're calling it the Xbox Series X25.

• 1:33Speaker 01

You said Xbox like four times.

• 1:35David Imel?

  Xbox, X25, Xbox Series.

• 1:41Speaker 01

Yeah, what is up, people of the internet? Welcome back to another episode of The Waveform Podcast. We're your hosts. I'm Marquez.

• 1:46Andrew Manganelli?

  I'm Andrew.

• 1:47David Imel?

  And I'm David.

• 1:48Speaker 01

And this week was WWDC week from Apple, so of course, we'll be talking about that quite a bit. New software, new AI, a lot of thoughts, maybe some hot takes.

• 1:57David Imel?

  Old Siri.

• 1:57Speaker 01

Old Siri, but maybe some other stuff, too. We've got potentially a couple of nostalgic video game stories. You know how I feel about nostalgia?

• 2:05David Imel?

  Backyard baseball?

• 2:05Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 2:08Speaker 01

It's never gonna knock come up.

• 2:10David Imel?

  Pick it and choose it.

• 2:10Speaker 01

  It's always gonna come up.

• 2:13Speaker 01

By the way, if you're a new listener, just trying to hear what happened at Dub Dub, hit that subscribe button. We talk about all the newest tech stories every week. So of course, whenever the next big show is, we'll be talking about that too. Get subscribed so you hear that ASAP when it drops. Audio version's like five in the morning or something crazy.

• 2:28David Imel?

  Four in the morning.

• 2:29Speaker 01

You get to listen on your commute, no matter what time you commute.

• 2:31David Imel?

  Even ASAP-er.

• 2:32Speaker 01

Yeah. So, but first, did they even test this? Does anybody have a digi?

• 2:38David Imel?

  Adam's got one.

• 2:39Speaker 03

Oh yeah, this was my turn. Okay, so my did they even test this is, I think it is a universal experience if you have the services that I have, which is a weird way to phrase this.

• 2:52David Imel?

  14 people.

• 2:52Speaker 03

On the Apple TV, if you have YouTube downloaded and you also have YouTube TV downloaded. I am one of those people that like to put related things together. So I will sit there and rearrange my icons, rearrange the apps, everything to put them together. So I was like, oh, YouTube and YouTube TV, I'll put them together. They have like the exact same icon and it is so confusing. And every time I'm trying to pick one, I accidentally pick the other one. The only difference is that one is in light mode, one is in dark mode. And the YouTube TV one says TV at the end of it. But like, besides that, they look exactly the same. So there's been so many times that like, just my fiance will sit down and try to go to YouTube and she'll accidentally pick YouTube TV. Or I will try to pick YouTube TV and I'll just like not really thinking about it, pick YouTube. And I'm like, they need slightly different icons.

• 3:37Speaker 01

Or hear me out. You just go to YouTube and they have a tab that says TV and then it.

• 3:42David Imel?

Kind of assumed that's what it was.

• 3:43Speaker 03

I think that's only on, I could be wrong. I think that's on other, like Roku or something like that, because Roku and them didn't have a deal, something like that. I forget. But.

• 3:54Speaker 01

Why don't they just do that?

• 3:55Speaker 03

I'll tell you on iPad. TV, there is an app for it.

• 3:57Speaker 01

I have the iPad YouTube app and the YouTube TV app and I regularly, they are almost exactly the same icon as well, just with a little TV at the bottom. So I also sometimes hit the wrong one.

• 4:06Speaker 03

Oh yeah, this might just be just an app thing, not even just for Apple TV. They might just have too similar an app.

• 4:11Speaker 01

Probably. Yeah. You know what they should change it to? Remember when the old iOS original YouTube app was a TV?

• 4:17Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 4:18Speaker 01

  That's what the YouTube TV.

• 4:19David Imel?

  Should be the old.

• 4:20Speaker 01

  Icon.

• 4:21David Imel?

  Icon.

• 4:22Speaker 01

Yeah, just throw it all the way back. Nostalgia.

• 4:24David Imel?

  Nostalgia.

• 4:25Speaker 03

Nostalgia sells. Sex is so last decade.

• 4:28Speaker 01

Yeah. Speaking of did they even test this, by the way, um, one of our readers did go and create a did they even test this subreddit?

• 4:36David Imel?

So if people want to submit their own, did they even test this? We will be looking through those. We don't moderate it, but we will be looking at it.

• 4:42Speaker 01

Are you saying we'll test them?

• 4:44David Imel?

Um, we may, we may, because sometimes the things that we bring, we didn't even test, to be honest.

• 4:51Andrew Manganelli?

That's like last week's title for the podcast.

• 4:53David Imel?

  Yeah, like last week's title.

• 4:55Speaker 01

  If you know, you know.

• 4:55David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 4:56Speaker 01

  If you know, you know.

• 4:57David Imel?

  Draft.

• 4:57Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 4:58David Imel?

  It was great.

• 4:58Speaker 03

  Notification.

• 4:59David Imel?

Big deal. Tim Cook's last good morning at Dub Dub this year.

• 5:03Speaker 04

Good morning. Thank you for joining us today at Apple Park.

• 5:07Speaker 01

It was interesting. It was interesting. There's a lot of, um, I was just telling you guys off camera, but I feel like there are a bunch of little things that were slightly different about this keynote that they've technically never done before.

• 5:18David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 5:19Speaker 01

Little, it might not make much of a difference at all, but like, did you notice that there were people, for the first time I've ever seen this, walking in the background behind the presenter in Apple Park? Like, like Craig would walk out of the woods and they're in the, in the blurry in the background, there'd be like two people walking with binders, just like having a conversation.

• 5:36Andrew Manganelli?

There's a few instances where people were in the background. It was like not enough people to think that the campus was, because like normally it feels just closed down.

• 5:44Speaker 01

Normally it's totally sterile and nobody's in the background.

• 5:46Andrew Manganelli?

But there were still so few that it still felt closed down and like possible. There was one where they were by the, what's that, like reflecting pool?

• 5:54Speaker 01

  Some big shallow pool.

• 5:55Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 5:56Speaker 01

I don't even know where that is.

• 5:56Andrew Manganelli?

In the background, there was two people talking to each other, but one was wearing all black and just blended in. So just sort of like one person talking to themselves for a little bit, but yeah. I'm, I can't tell if they were told to be there.

• 6:09Speaker 01

I noticed that. I felt like that's, it's definitely, it's such a big production. It has to be an intentional choice of like, oh, we're shooting it on campus. We might as well make it feel more like the campus is alive. But that was a small thing I noticed.

• 6:19David Imel?

A lot of the productions seemed to be a little less high quality than usual.

• 6:22Speaker 01

Well, that's exactly, okay, that's another thing I was gonna say. Did you notice a lot of the shots felt a little bit more handheld?

• 6:28Andrew Manganelli?

We were freaking out. We probably missed the first 15 minutes of it because we're all like, is this fake handheld? Is this real? Some of it was good. Some of it was really bad.

• 6:37Speaker 01

Yeah. Yeah. Distra, and again, it's definitely, it's definitely an intentional decision of like, let's make it feel a little more alive, a little more dynamic. Those are such big productions that every little thing is being considered. And someone decided that they would do a little bit less big, sweepy, slow mo and a little bit more. Wobbly handheld.

• 6:55David Imel?

But the thing I will say is that they, they didn't even do any drone shots this year. Uh, when they announced the new macOS version, which we will get to, they didn't have any shots of them in front of that location. Like, they didn't do any crazy location stuff this year.

• 7:09Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 7:10David Imel?

Which made me think that maybe they did rush the video production, like they only did it a few weeks ago, maybe?

• 7:15Speaker 01

Here's, here's one more thing I noticed that I've never seen before. Did you notice that they didn't diffuse the light as much and it was clearly broad daylight instead of the super, super soft?

• 7:24David Imel?

  Yes.

• 7:25Speaker 01

  So it's a small thing.

• 7:26David Imel?

Well, this is what I'm saying. It felt less produced, which.

• 7:29Speaker 01

It just felt a little different. I don't know if it felt to me less produced. It just felt a little bit more natural, a little less hyper polished.

• 7:36Speaker 03

My theory is because they were announcing all the AI stuff and they wanted to feel human. Before it's sterile and robotic and beautiful, sweeping, we're so cool. Now it's like, they're gonna be talking about AI for an hour? Let's make it handheld. Let's have people in the background.

• 7:51Andrew Manganelli?

That tracks with all the transitions. The transitions were very like low frame rate, uh, like match cuts and stuff. It looked very human, I guess is a way of saying. Which I liked, really liked that. Then they ruined it all with that rap at the end. That was.

• 8:04David Imel?

That was hor- dude, that was incredible. That was such a great. That was amazing. No way, bro.

• 8:11Speaker 03

That's the only thing I've been listening to.

• 8:14David Imel?

It was just the corporate appeasement rap. They were like. The Gap and Walmart. Come on.

• 8:19Andrew Manganelli?

That's one way of looking at it.

• 8:20David Imel?

What do you mean? It was also like, all the developers were there and they were like, please shout out my app. And they did and they went. Yeah, but there were so many corporate apps, though.

• 8:29Speaker 01

Yeah, but the developers of those apps still people.

• 8:31Andrew Manganelli?

That was the equivalent of when a YouTuber puts all of the Patreon members on the, at the end of their YouTube video. That was just them shouting them out at the end.

• 8:40Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah. And you know, I can't attribute any of this unique stuff to being like Tim's last dub dub or like the handoff to Turner's or whatever. But I, you know, those were things that we noticed and we always seem to think of Apple's keynotes as like the staple of like what you expect a tech keynote to be and what everyone seems to be chasing. So it's interesting to notice that stuff.

• 8:58Andrew Manganelli?

I don't know if either of you guys went to it. But I saw like 400 selfies with John Turnus.

• 9:04David Imel?

I was there. So I was there. Yeah, they brought. So John Turnus was not in the event at all, which was interesting. He was not in the video. It was kind of surprising.

• 9:11Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 9:11David Imel?

But yeah, there was a little, there's like a little media mixer every year that traditionally has only been for international people. And then now they finally added US people to it. I went to just mingle with my friends, like the Verge team and stuff. And yeah, they brought John Turnus in and he basically just did like a power walk through there, like slowly just boom, boom, boom, boom. And he was there for like maybe half an hour and then he pieced out. And I think that they just wanted to bring him in to be like, he's human, he's accessible, he's cool.

• 9:43Andrew Manganelli?

It made me think he was gonna be in the event somewhere.

• 9:46David Imel?

Yeah, and he was not in it at all.

• 9:48Speaker 01

Yeah, I mean, Tim Cook's still the CEO, you know? Craig's still the head of software.

• 9:52David Imel?

  For now.

• 9:53Speaker 01

So for now, this is a, a normal WWDC cast of characters. We never see John at Dub Dub because he's the hardware.

• 9:59Andrew Manganelli?

I kind of thought there would be like a handoff or like a, an ode somewhere in the end, like a, a...

• 10:06David Imel?

  The ode, so...

• 10:07Speaker 01

Something happen in person. Yeah, so I guess in person, what they'll typically do, I've said this in videos before, but they tried out the CEO and then Craig for like five minutes of speech before the livestream starts. So people who are there will get that livestream. So it was Craig, he walks out, he goes, "This is, you know, big round of applause, Tim's last Dub Dub, 15 years of leadership, it's all been great."

• 10:24Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, he did say...

• 10:24Speaker 01

Yeah. Tim comes out, he gives about 25 thank yous.

• 10:28David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 10:28Speaker 01

Because everyone's like standing, you know, everyone there is super loves Apple, so they're all standing applauding, "Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you." Then he gives a five minutes of, "This has been the honor of my life and enjoy the show."

• 10:38David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 10:39Speaker 01

So that was the ode, I think.

• 10:41Andrew Manganelli?

Why can't they just show that?

• 10:43David Imel?

I was surprised at that, too.

• 10:44Andrew Manganelli?

I've been always wondering that. This felt the best time to do it.

• 10:48Speaker 03

If I was Tim Cook, I would not want that shown in that way because I don't think he wants it to be about himself. He wants it to be about what Apple does and what it means to developers and the world and all this stuff. Like, take the focus off of him.

• 11:01Speaker 01

There was a tiny, tiny bit at the very end, didn't he say? Like, "The last 15 years has been great," basically. That was kind of it.

• 11:08Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 11:08Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 11:09Andrew Manganelli?

He didn't actually, I don't think he actually said goodbye in that. Like, he doesn't mention, he just said like, "This has been life-changing, yeah, it's been great."

• 11:17Speaker 03

Well, he still has the September.

• 11:18Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, but it was still his last event and they didn't really...

• 11:21David Imel?

He's not gonna be headlining that, though.

• 11:23Andrew Manganelli?

But he's, he'll still be CEO. Oh no, he takes over September 1st.

• 11:26Speaker 01

September 1st. Yeah, so he won't be CEO anymore. Yeah, they'll be in the audience just like a fan.

• 11:31Andrew Manganelli?

He'll be making a new Ferrari by then.

• 11:34Speaker 01

  I really hope not.

• 11:36David Imel?

Yeah, okay, so well, I did tweet a video of, uh, six years ago, of Tim Cook saying thank you 25 times. So if you actually want to see it, even though it wasn't in the live stream, you can head to my Twitter. But, we gotta get into the actual announcements.

• 11:49Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 11:50David Imel?

We're breaking this out, the way that we're gonna handle this is because it was a crazy, there's, this is one of the years where there's just like 8,000 little updates. So the way that we're gonna break this down is that we're gonna go through the platform changes, which is the Apple Watch, the iPhone, the iPad, the Mac, all that kinda stuff. And then, we are going to go into the...

• 12:10Andrew Manganelli?

  Parental safety and Siri AI.

• 12:12David Imel?

Parental safety stuff, and then we're gonna do Siri separately, because this year is a big Siri year, it's the Siri Part 2 Electric Boogaloo comeback story.

• 12:22Speaker 01

I just wanna say, I was close. I said they would call it Siri OS, they called it Siri AI.

• 12:25David Imel?

They called it Siri AI, which is very, sure.

• 12:30Andrew Manganelli?

  Six total letters.

• 12:31David Imel?

  Different, but physically very close.

• 12:34Speaker 01

  True.

• 12:34David Imel?

Yeah, so we're gonna, we're gonna handle Siri completely separately, but I think first, we should just go through the individual platform updates, and I specifically stripped the Siri stuff from the platform updates, because we're gonna all handle it all together.

• 12:46Speaker 01

Sure. Yeah, a lot of people have been describing this as like the snow leopard of, uh, you know, it's a bunch of small incremental combing through, attention to detail, performance increases, like no big design overhaul, no huge features really needed, just fix the buggy crap.

• 13:03David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 13:04Speaker 01

You know, like you've been, you've been building all this wonderful new stuff, but it's been kind of a show behind the scenes, like fix that part, you know? So now, much more efficiencies, much more, we heard things like faster app opening, faster file loading, faster indexing and things like that.

• 13:22Andrew Manganelli?

My favorite part about that is, did you notice when, uh, that she came up and she's talking about all these things that are faster and has this big list that keeps scrolling?

• 13:29Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 13:30Andrew Manganelli?

And I was like, oh man, it's in alphabetical order and there's still an M. Then I realized every single time it scrolls, it's just because it starts with faster.

• 13:37Speaker 01

  Faster.

• 13:38Andrew Manganelli?

It's like a list of like 50 things that just all start with faster.

• 13:41Speaker 01

And I welcome that. That's great. I want everything to feel super snappy. 80% faster airdrops is like, alright.

• 13:47David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 13:47Speaker 01

  Great.

• 13:48David Imel?

  Up to.

• 13:48Speaker 01

Up to, obviously. Maybe once in a while it'll be 80% faster.

• 13:52Speaker 03

Oh yeah, by the way, we should mention Rufus is here.

• 13:53Speaker 01

  Oh yeah. Hey.

• 13:54David Imel?

  Hey. Alison's on vacation.

• 13:56Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 13:56David Imel?

  Look at me.

• 13:58Andrew Manganelli?

  He's up to now.

• 14:00Speaker 01

So I'm, I'm happy to see that stuff.

• 14:03David Imel?

Yeah. So, so if you guys know what Snow Leopard is, I was looking more into Snow Leopard. It's an old macOS version that was the follow-up to OSX Leopard.

• 14:11Andrew Manganelli?

  Where's Snow Leopard in California?

• 14:14David Imel?

It's in Lake Tahoe. So, anyway, there, the tagline for Snow Leopard, I just wanted to call this out, was zero new, zero new features. Which is very funny. Hell yeah. Yeah, I just think. Embrace it. That's such a.

• 14:28Speaker 01

A thing you already know and love.

• 14:29David Imel?

  Steve Jobs thing.

• 14:30Speaker 01

  Which just works better.

• 14:31David Imel?

  Yes.

• 14:32Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 14:32Andrew Manganelli?

  Trust me.

• 14:33Speaker 01

They, they shouted out things like improved crisper icons, matching corner radii.

• 14:39David Imel?

  That actually, that was great.

• 14:41Speaker 01

Which, it's huge. That's why I was specifically looking, I haven't downloaded the beta yet, but you know that thing where you go to airdrop someone and then you select all of the like, people to airdrop to and then you're about to click one and then it just shifts them all over? And the one you click is not the one you wanted and it shifts them all over again?

• 14:56David Imel?

  The worst.

• 14:56Speaker 01

This better be one of those improvements. They better fix that.

• 14:59David Imel?

  It's supposed to fix it.

• 15:00Speaker 01

  They better fix that.

• 15:01David Imel?

Alright, so number one, when you first boot up your new iPhone with iOS 27 or your Mac, there are now liquid glass sliders. So you can decide whether or not you want it to be fully glassy, little in the middle, or very opaque.

• 15:17Andrew Manganelli?

Did you test, try it at all?

• 15:19David Imel?

  I did.

• 15:20Andrew Manganelli?

Am I correct in saying they said for people who want it more transparent, there's ultra clear, so that slider now?

• 15:26David Imel?

It's not more than before. It's like just before.

• 15:30Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay.

• 15:30Speaker 01

So the middle is, is not.

• 15:33David Imel?

  In between.

• 15:33Speaker 01

So like, if I were to compare today's liquid glass with the middle of the slider for tomorrow's liquid glass.

• 15:41David Imel?

I would say it's between the original, what they shipped at the very beginning.

• 15:45Speaker 01

  That was like really translucent.

• 15:47David Imel?

With what they shipped later where they made it a little more opaque. It's like in the middle of those.

• 15:51Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 15:52David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 15:52Andrew Manganelli?

I will say, I love this.

• 15:53David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 15:54Speaker 01

Yeah, this is, this is the thing. I feel like people mocked this up on Twitter for like months after it came out, like, "Give us a slider, we just want to adjust it." And then the fact that you can make it more clear or less clear is hilarious. Cause there are people on both sides of the fence, so.

• 16:06David Imel?

  They.

• 16:07Speaker 01

  There it is.

• 16:07Andrew Manganelli?

They did say, "For some users who would like liquid glass to be even more clear and others prefer a more tinted appearance."

• 16:14David Imel?

Which, remember, they sort of pulled it back.

• 16:17Andrew Manganelli?

  Pre, it's like alpha.

• 16:18David Imel?

However, however, there is a universal change that makes it more readable. And that is that they basically sharpened the edges of all of the liquid glass interfaces. So anything that has the translucency on it, it's got like, it's got sharpening around the perimeter, which just makes it easier to like read things. It makes it easier to like see the difference between the liquid glass interface and what's below it.

• 16:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 16:41David Imel?

It's better across the board, by far. So, that is good.

• 16:45Andrew Manganelli?

  Good.

• 16:46David Imel?

Yeah. Um, as you mentioned, Marquez, apps launch up to 30% faster. This is especially obvious on older iPhones because this OS does go back to the iPhone 11.

• 16:55Andrew Manganelli?

  Mm-hmm.

• 16:56David Imel?

  Which is really cool.

• 16:56Speaker 01

Can I just say, again, making older iPhones much faster, without adding any new features, is a great software update.

• 17:04David Imel?

  Yes.

• 17:05Speaker 01

The iPhone 11 is how old now? I mean, that's an older, that's seven years old, that phone?

• 17:10David Imel?

  Yeah, it's.

• 17:11Speaker 01

That's a long time ago to be getting a software update to make it dramatically faster.

• 17:14David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 17:15Speaker 01

Thumbs up for that. Big thumbs up.

• 17:16Andrew Manganelli?

The CPU scheduler will go all the way back to iPhone 11 as well. And they said, that was one where it was like, "This is what it does, but it will probably be helping those phones way more than the newer phone."

• 17:26David Imel?

Yes, yes. Uh, we're also getting automatic Wi-Fi to cellular switching to be much faster, which is good. They basically mentioned that, you know, you're in your house, you walk into your garage, but then your phone doesn't want to connect to your cellular, but it's also on too weak of a Wi-Fi connection, so you can't actually start your music fast enough. Now, when it detects that you're on a very weak Wi-Fi connection, it'll just instantly switch to cellular. So.

• 17:48Andrew Manganelli?

That happens in the gym here, every single time.

• 17:51David Imel?

  All the time.

• 17:51Andrew Manganelli?

I have to just manually swap to data instead?

• 17:54David Imel?

  Yes. Okay. Genmoji got overhauled.

• 17:57Andrew Manganelli?

Okay, we can skip this part.

• 17:59David Imel?

I specifically flushed this out, baby, cuz I love it.

• 18:03Andrew Manganelli?

These are some good things, and then Genmoji has like six.

• 18:06David Imel?

Genmoji. Okay, but it's a completely different interface now. Like, they totally changed the Genmoji interface.

• 18:11Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay.

• 18:11David Imel?

And, and, Genmoji used to make your phone like catch on fire, and now it doesn't at all.

• 18:16Speaker 03

Does it still send as a sticker?

• 18:18David Imel?

Um, well, it's different. It's not a sticker. Well, you can create a sticker, but a Genmoji is, it's like sort of in between a sticker and an emoji.

• 18:27Speaker 03

  It sends as an.

• 18:27Andrew Manganelli?

  It's revolutionary.

• 18:28David Imel?

  It's like a, it's a scalable image vector file.

• 18:31Speaker 03

But it sends as a sticker.

• 18:34David Imel?

  Shut up, Adam.

• 18:35Speaker 01

Trying to make it sound useful as a scalable image vector file is hilarious.

• 18:38David Imel?

Okay, well, before you had to like select a person to use as a base, and then you had to like mix it with an emoji, and it was just weird and not good. I still loved it, but it was still not good. Now, you can use any image, and it will basically like make like a Genmoji of that image, which is crazy.

• 18:55Speaker 03

I love all these too, like Emoji Kitchen on Gboard. Freaking awesome. But like, they send us images, and it kind of ruins the like comedic effect when a giant.

• 19:04David Imel?

This is not, no, well, I mean, I could try to send this to you, Adam. Do you wanna see what happens? Yeah, I'm gonna send it to you, Adam.

• 19:11Speaker 03

I'm not on iOS, by the way.

• 19:12David Imel?

  I know. That's why.

• 19:14Andrew Manganelli?

So it's definitely coming in as a JPG.

• 19:15David Imel?

  All right, we're gonna make.

• 19:17Speaker 01

  JPG.

• 19:17David Imel?

Okay, this is the new Genmoji UI, right? It's way better. You can start recording. I'll screen record. Thank you.

• 19:23Andrew Manganelli?

It looks very like AI prompts.

• 19:26David Imel?

You look like an AI prompt.

• 19:28Andrew Manganelli?

Well, I, probably will look cooler than that Genmoji. It also says, "Imagine." It says, "Emoji. Describe an emoji."

• 19:35David Imel?

Let's say, I'm gonna make this, this is me as Link from Zelda, and let's say.

• 19:42Speaker 03

Dude, copyright is just not a thing?

• 19:45Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 19:46David Imel?

Well, I'm not even describing anything. I'm just developing a genmoji.

• 19:49Andrew Manganelli?

It is. It's got a little bubble around it.

• 19:51David Imel?

Look at this. That's pretty bad.

• 19:53Andrew Manganelli?

Actually, I don't think that's that bad, except for the fact that, so it-

• 19:56David Imel?

It actually did use me with my, like, stick Na'vi and everything, you know?

• 20:00Andrew Manganelli?

The biggest issue is, it looks like it's really poorly cut out from a background, even though it's a generated emoji. Why does it have, like-

• 20:07David Imel?

So it looks that way at first, but when you actually send it, it doesn't go through like that. Describe a change, though. What would you like to change about this?

• 20:13Andrew Manganelli?

Get rid of the crappy white outline.

• 20:15David Imel?

We can mix it with a real emoji. Let's mix it with the crying laughing. Did you say beaver?

• 20:20Andrew Manganelli?

  Beer. There is a-

• 20:22David Imel?

Oh, let's do crying laughing and beer. Wait, is there a beer emoji?

• 20:25Andrew Manganelli?

  It was right before it.

• 20:26David Imel?

I know that we're spending a lot of time on this. Here, there's a cheers emoji. Okay, let's see what happens. Boom, baby.

• 20:32Speaker 01

  I'm so sorry, listeners.

• 20:33David Imel?

  And this is a, and-

• 20:34Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay, interactive thing?

• 20:35David Imel?

There's a little liquid glass thing that goes around. Oh, you can't. All right, no beer. Anyway. No, that's fine. We'll end it there.

• 20:42Andrew Manganelli?

  There's a couple of-

• 20:42David Imel?

I don't wanna, all I gotta say is I love emojis.

• 20:45Speaker 01

Genmoji's overhauled. I know a lot of you guys are waiting for-

• 20:47Andrew Manganelli?

David really just sold genmoji for everyone.

• 20:50David Imel?

I mean, way improved performance, like, multi-element designs, interactive editing. It's pretty cool. Speaking of that whole image generating model, Image Playground got revamped with photorealistic generation and new editing tools.

• 21:04Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 21:05David Imel?

I'm pretty sure this is sort of using the same stuff as, like, Nano Banana, you know?

• 21:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 21:11David Imel?

It's not directly Nano Banana, because none of this is directly Gemini, but-

• 21:14Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 21:15David Imel?

  That's what they say.

• 21:16Speaker 01

Slop generator just got way more-

• 21:18David Imel?

Yeah, slop generator. I actually did write that down.

• 21:21Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, you wrote slop like 14 times in a couple of sentences.

• 21:25David Imel?

It'll also suggest slop wallpapers for you, which is fun and not fun.

• 21:30Andrew Manganelli?

  Slop papers?

• 21:30David Imel?

Look under your seat. It's more slop.

• 21:34David Imel?

  It's more slop. Okay, okay.

• 21:36Andrew Manganelli?

  You get slop.

• 21:37David Imel?

You get slop. Okay, we have new photo editing tools within the Photos app.

• 21:42Speaker 01

  Okay, these are interesting.

• 21:43David Imel?

These are actually interesting, and I got to, like, talk to them about how they work, and it's really interesting. It uses a lot of Vision Pro technology, actually, so the Vision Pro was not for nothing.

• 21:53Speaker 01

Okay, so there's three new photo editing tools.

• 21:55David Imel?

  Yes.

• 21:55Speaker 01

The first one, well, is not new, but it's improved. Cleanup. You've probably heard of Cleanup.

• 21:59David Imel?

  Improved by a lot.

• 21:59Speaker 01

You just tap the item in the front or the background, and it deletes it. We've seen a lot of comparisons of people, like, comparing it to, like, a Samsung phone, where the Samsung phone reconstructs your face, and the Apple one doesn't do it well.

• 22:08David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 22:08Speaker 01

Seems like this one's much better. So Cleanup is better. The second one is extend. So if you have a shot that you want to add to the side or top of, you know, I wish you were standing further away, or you don't have an ultrawide because you have an iPhone Air, you want to get more of the background. You can extend an image up to 25% on any edge, and it'll generate more of what it thinks the rest of the photo would look like. Now, I think you can then just take that and extend it again, and then just take that and extend it again. So the 25% limit is for each pass, but eventually it's gonna find-

• 22:44Andrew Manganelli?

It's gonna get worse. It's like a game of telephone with the edges at that point.

• 22:48Speaker 01

Yeah. The examples they showed us were like a person in the center of the frame perfectly, and it's just like background, and you just add more background.

• 22:55Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. It's funny, because I feel like the most useful that would be is when you're not centered, and maybe you want to upload to something like Instagram, which is square, and you're like, "I just want to not have to crop in order to center myself, but just add some stuff that no one on Instagram cares about." If the left side of the frame is 15%.

• 23:12Speaker 01

I have tried this a few times, and we have to give a disclaimer that this is all beta software, legally. But I took a photo of V-Song from The Verge, and her arm was slightly cut off here, and she was sitting on a chair, and her sweater was like hanging off the back of the chair. And part of the sweater was cut off, and her arm was cut off. So I extended it out, it like added arm pixels, and it looked very, very realistic. And the part of the chair that it added, it also had her sweater draping along the back of the chair. It looked very, very realistic. Sounds, I've seen, I mean, the examples look good. I think I'm going to try it with the not, I mean, it'll be best with just pattern backgrounds, so it just makes more pattern. But I'm gonna try it with all the other things, like arms and legs and stuff. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So-

• 23:56Andrew Manganelli?

Extending images in like Photoshop or whatever is always either like, "Holy cow, that was incredible, and I did no work," or "What on earth are you trying to add to this photo?"

• 24:05Speaker 01

Just add a third arm. Yeah.

• 24:07Speaker 03

Do you think you can use this to make yourself look taller?

• 24:09Speaker 01

  Probably.

• 24:11David Imel?

Like, who needs leg lengthening surgery?

• 24:13Speaker 01

Yeah, it depends on how, what it decides to do.

• 24:15David Imel?

  Extend my legs.

• 24:16Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, cuz you can't tell it directly what to do in this version.

• 24:20Andrew Manganelli?

But I guess if you're, if you're wearing shorts and it like cuts off at the shins, will it just keep adding shins longer and longer down?

• 24:26Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 24:27David Imel?

  I think it'll probably.

• 24:27Speaker 03

At some points, it has to decide there's feet.

• 24:29Speaker 01

Yeah, if I just keep extending it.

• 24:31Andrew Manganelli?

I wanna try that so bad.

• 24:32Speaker 01

It's gonna draw legs until it draw, it's gonna figure out what shoes it wants to add.

• 24:35David Imel?

  Damn.

• 24:36Speaker 01

So that's, yeah, that is extend, fun for changing aspect ratios. Lastly, there is this rotating feature. What is it called?

• 24:43David Imel?

  Reframe.

• 24:44Speaker 01

  Spatial reframe.

• 24:45David Imel?

  Yeah, spatial reframe.

• 24:46Speaker 01

Okay, spatial reframe is really trippy. So the idea is you took a photo where you actually wanna change the place you took the photo from in 3D space. You wanna rotate over a little bit, or up, or down a little bit, and it will use generative fill and, like you said, the spatial reconstruction. Cuz when you looked at a photo and turned it 3D with the Vision Pro's tech, it was a pretty convincing like 3D reconstruction. So it's, it's generating pixels in between to try to adjust your perspective.

• 25:20David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 25:21Speaker 01

I would love to test this a lot. I really don't know how good this could possibly be.

• 25:27David Imel?

  It's pretty good.

• 25:27Speaker 01

It's really impressive when you're just moving around in the preview and it looks like you're literally warping and like if someone was sitting in a photo and like looking to the side of the camera and then you just move it over so that you're in their eye line, suddenly you're making eye contact in a photo where they weren't making eye contact. Trippy.

• 25:43David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 25:44Speaker 01

But it'll do it, and then it'll reconstruct the background, reconstruct the angles of the face, et cetera.

• 25:49David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 25:49Speaker 01

And, I don't know, that should be interesting.

• 25:51David Imel?

The way that the Vision Pro does it and the way that the iPhones now do it is they do Gaussian splatting, which is basically they create, they recreate a 3D scene using, using Gaussian splats. And then it uses that sort of 3D model to do generative fill on the areas.

• 26:08Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 26:08David Imel?

  It's really realistic.

• 26:10Speaker 01

  It's quite realistic.

• 26:11Andrew Manganelli?

It feels like one of those things that, like... You know, you see it and you want to test it and you test the extreme of it and you're gonna find all of the issues with it.

• 26:19David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 26:20Andrew Manganelli?

But when I think of it, I think of like, when I've taken a photo of like, a corner of a building and I was like, one degree off.

• 26:27David Imel?

  Oh, true.

• 26:27Andrew Manganelli?

You know, like, it should probably be ultra minor, like, adjustments where you're just like, I was just like, this little tiny angle off of the, the thing I was trying to frame in with this, and like, a little tiny tweak can probably, it's almost content.

• 26:42David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 26:42Andrew Manganelli?

  We're filling it in that.

• 26:43David Imel?

Which, to be fair, like, there's, there's, in Lightroom and Photoshop, there's tools where you can just auto align and it'll, it'll spatially align things anyway.

• 26:51Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 26:51David Imel?

  So you don't.

• 26:52Speaker 01

It's just not as pretty to like, you can drag it with your hand and like, watch it turn someone's head, which is crazy. They did mention, when I first saw this, I thought this was just gonna be photos like, shot with the latest couple of iPhones, because you have more depth information, but they said it's any photo from any camera. I don't know if it means it's better from iPhones, or if it's just the same quality from whatever.

• 27:11David Imel?

They told me that they trained most of the image model that does the reconstruction on iPhone photos, but they have other photos that they also trained it on.

• 27:19Speaker 01

I tried this with a photo I took on my X100, and it was a better result than a photo I tried on an iPhone.

• 27:25David Imel?

  Interesting. Interesting.

• 27:27Speaker 01

It might have just been because.

• 27:28David Imel?

Was that a higher resolution too?

• 27:29Speaker 01

Probably was a higher resolution, probably was a little sharper. That might have something to do with it.

• 27:33David Imel?

Yeah, but they, so you can like, you can use one finger to sort of like, move, kind of pivot around the object, but if you use two fingers, you can physically move the camera up and down.

• 27:42Speaker 01

  So strange.

• 27:43David Imel?

  Which is very strange.

• 27:44Speaker 01

And then again, you can only go a certain amount, but then you can save and then

• 27:48David Imel?

  Do it again.

• 27:48Speaker 01

go further and go further, and I just feel like, I want to take like, a picture of someone like, blowing out candles, and then just go to the back of their head.

• 27:54Andrew Manganelli?

  Yes.

• 27:54Speaker 01

And see all the people in front of them, like.

• 27:56Andrew Manganelli?

  The Thousand Upload Project.

• 27:57Speaker 01

  Yeah, yes.

• 27:59David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 27:59Speaker 01

  Damn, wait, wow.

• 28:00David Imel?

  It's a good idea.

• 28:01Speaker 01

  This is a good short.

• 28:02David Imel?

  Maybe.

• 28:02Speaker 01

  Like, just keep rotating.

• 28:03David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 28:04Speaker 01

Just see what it reconstructs on the other side.

• 28:06Andrew Manganelli?

  Can we 360 a person?

• 28:07Speaker 01

Whoa. Okay, yeah, we're doing that.

• 28:09Andrew Manganelli?

I want to do it with the legs also. I think the leg thing is hilarious.

• 28:13Speaker 01

Definitely would do that with the legs.

• 28:14David Imel?

  The legs will be funny.

• 28:15Andrew Manganelli?

  Wemba Yana out of nowhere.

• 28:17David Imel?

So they changed the camera UI yet again. They now have three little settings at the top, so you can change the format. You can turn flash on and off, and you can turn live photos on and off. And then now, they used to have the extra options in the top right. Now it's just more accessible near the shutter button, which is interesting. And now, and we'll get to this later, there is now a Siri mode. So this is basically for visual intelligence, because before, you had to use camera control to access visual intelligence. Now you can just use the Siri mode within the camera app itself.

• 28:48Speaker 01

And you can still use camera control.

• 28:49David Imel?

And you can still use camera control to access that, yeah. And the UI is way better than the... The last UI for camera intel... for visual intelligence was like, it was like one button and a little screen.

• 28:59Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 28:59David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 29:00Speaker 01

  Chat with your photo.

• 29:01David Imel?

Last... yeah, very not well thought out. Okay, now Wallet is adding a create a pass feature, so you can scan physical passes in the real world and create digital versions of them to keep in your Apple Wallet. If they... I believe if they have like NFC capability, you can also scan it and it'll become a digital NFC pass, which is pretty cool.

• 29:21Speaker 01

That's nice. There's also the menu thing, or the receipt thing.

• 29:26David Imel?

  Yes.

• 29:26Speaker 01

So if you have a receipt, you can take a picture of it with the Siri camera, and then it will like itemize it and break it all out. And then you can split the bill and then charge everyone with Apple Cash or something.

• 29:34David Imel?

You have to use Apple Cash. I did try this last night, and it is actually a very cool UI, because it seman... it like breaks down each individual item, and it's like, who got this item? Who got this item? This is the exact price. And then you put in the percentage of the tip that you put in, and it splits it between everybody. It's a very good UI.

• 29:50Speaker 05

It is really cool to see that demo and like use it every once in a while, but I don't remember the last time I actually did something like that.

• 29:57Speaker 01

I do think this is a tech demo feature. People never use it. They always just take a picture and Venmo each other. But for the tech demo, it's like, oh, that's cool that that worked.

• 30:06Andrew Manganelli?

It's cool, yeah. And I guess a more complicated split check of a bunch of people getting all sorts of different levels of hungriness.

• 30:11Speaker 05

  Everyone has Apple Cash?

• 30:13David Imel?

That's the problem. Apple Cash is easy to connect to your bank account, but not a lot of people use it.

• 30:18Andrew Manganelli?

Well, but doesn't it also split it and just tell you the numbers? And then you don't have to pay through it? You can just tell everybody this is how much it actually is?

• 30:24Speaker 01

Ooh, this is something I wanted to do in my recap video, but I didn't have enough time to write it all in. But I think it would have been really clever. I wanted to do a Sherlock counter. And that is definitely an app in the App Store is like, uh, like even Splitwise, I'm sure would have had something like this where you just take a picture of the receipt and it just breaks it up and tells you how to pay.

• 30:42David Imel?

  Hundred percent.

• 30:43Speaker 01

Sherlocked. There you go. Right there. Counter. One.

• 30:46Andrew Manganelli?

Here's one. I have another one for you where all of them are probably wrong.

• 30:51Andrew Manganelli?

Taking pictures to calorie track items. Didn't they throw that in here too?

• 30:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 30:56Andrew Manganelli?

It doesn't, it's not gonna work. It does, you can't tell what people are using or what's on this food.

• 31:02Speaker 01

  They're gonna try. Yeah.

• 31:03Andrew Manganelli?

It's gonna be. It's just never going to work.

• 31:05Speaker 01

  It's never gonna be accurate.

• 31:06David Imel?

Yeah. The reason it won't be accurate is because you just don't know how much oil that, that.

• 31:10Andrew Manganelli?

  Oil or seasoning or anything.

• 31:12David Imel?

  Oil, honestly.

• 31:13Andrew Manganelli?

A lot of times, but like, it could be a handful of almonds. Like this could be anywhere from four to like 10 and like, who knows? Yeah. Why'd you pick that example?

• 31:26David Imel?

  The humane almonds.

• 31:27Andrew Manganelli?

I don't know. It's just never gonna work.

• 31:29David Imel?

Or a closed burrito, a closed burrito. As we talked about last time.

• 31:33Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 31:34David Imel?

Uh, okay. Big change. Passwords can now automatically fix themselves if they have compromised or weak credentials.

• 31:41Speaker 01

  This is, this is crazy.

• 31:43David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 31:43Speaker 01

This to me was the biggest new feature.

• 31:46David Imel?

It's like agentic in a way.

• 31:47Speaker 01

This is the most agentic new feature as well.

• 31:49David Imel?

  One of them. Yeah.

• 31:50Speaker 01

So the way it works is the Passwords app, which for years it's already been telling you, hey, your passwords are weak, your passwords are compromised. If you have, uh, the same password in more than one site, it'll tell you this is a weak password. So all of these have always been flagged before, but people don't often do anything about it. This new Passwords app will, if you decide to give it permission to, it will agentically go in to these websites one by one, log in, and change your password to a more secure password that it then saves and remembers so that it can log you in in the future.

• 32:20David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 32:20Speaker 01

So it's a, it's so polarizing because I posted about this. It's a good thing.

• 32:25David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 32:25Speaker 01

Because it makes all of your passwords more secure, makes them like 30 characters long and alphanumeric and all this fun stuff.

• 32:31David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 32:33Speaker 01

But it also means it has to identically go do that and you are now

• 32:36David Imel?

  Locked in.

• 32:37Speaker 01

Not locked in, but much more likely to just keep using the passwords app.

• 32:41Speaker 05

Is there any way to export that?

• 32:43Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 32:43David Imel?

  Yeah, you can.

• 32:44Speaker 01

Okay, so you can go through and export and then save it to pass, you know, seven, what is it? One password, I use that, but like that, it's very clever what they've done with that.

• 32:52Speaker 05

  And I hope it works.

• 32:53Andrew Manganelli?

  Sherlock also.

• 32:55Speaker 01

Could be a Sherlock as well. I mean, it's not fully, I don't know if any other app has done that exact feature where they will identically go in and change that, but just as far as an agent going and acting on your behalf.

• 33:05David Imel?

I think this also requires like the, we'll get to the new series stuff later, but it requires the personal context of your email because most of these websites, when you change the password, will send you a one-time code.

• 33:16Speaker 01

  Mm hmm.

• 33:16David Imel?

And then so it needs to know what that one-time code is so they can go back to the website, put the code in and.

• 33:21Speaker 05

Unless it's Meta AI, then you just tell the AI, no, I don't have access to that email and it resets the password.

• 33:27Andrew Manganelli?

Well, I'm thinking, cause like Megaphone makes us change our password every six months and I've forgotten it every single time, but like that's a, you have to do a captcha every time you do it. So would this be able to go through, that feels like an immediate.

• 33:42David Imel?

I mean, all, okay, every single one of the demos is good if it works, but I have so many questions about what happens if it doesn't work.

• 33:50Speaker 01

  For sure.

• 33:51David Imel?

And that is a good, that is a good example of like, what happens if there is a captcha?

• 33:53Andrew Manganelli?

  It probably just decides.

• 33:55David Imel?

  The UI.

• 33:55Andrew Manganelli?

We can't do this one, you go do it.

• 33:56David Imel?

They showed a little UI of like showing all of your passwords and you select the ones that are compromised or weak and you said, change these for me. And over time it'll like light up green if it's changed it successfully.

• 34:08Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 34:08David Imel?

So maybe it'll just show the ones that it hasn't been able to change successfully.

• 34:11Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 34:11David Imel?

I know that Google has like eight times introduced the feature where it can automatically unsubscribe from emails for you.

• 34:18Speaker 01

  Allegedly.

• 34:19David Imel?

Exactly. Because half the time, every time it doesn't work.

• 34:23Speaker 05

I specifically tested this like a week ago because I was like, okay, I'm looking at this exact email that I got from this company.

• 34:29David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 34:29Speaker 05

I'm clicking on subscribe and if it shows up again, I'm going to take note and it did.

• 34:33Andrew Manganelli?

Do you know, it's usually because those places then in their unsubscribe list are like, well, you can unsubscribe from sales or reminders or this. And so like, it's probably

• 34:42David Imel?

  Picking ones.

• 34:43Andrew Manganelli?

Slow, cause I have one, name them, name and shame, Stickly Furniture. I, yeah, I've done the unsubscribe button in Gmail probably every other day for like the last two weeks and I'm still getting emails from them.

• 34:56Speaker 05

Well, I had a few years ago, I had an idea to do a bonus episode of does the unsubscribe button even work? And basically the answer was very boring because I spoke with the superhuman CEO, which now got purchased by Grammarly, which changed its name to Superhuman.

• 35:08Andrew Manganelli?

Also might get Sherlock later in this episode.

• 35:11Speaker 05

Yeah, but he was telling me that basically because of laws and stuff in different parts of the world, it comes down, there are laws. It comes down to the company that is running it to just do it correctly.

• 35:23David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 35:24Speaker 05

So it's like not a, yeah, like it's not a fun answer. It's just like, yeah, they just have to go do it or have something in place to do it, you know?

• 35:30David Imel?

I guarantee you that my local, like my favorite restaurant sends me like 20 emails a week and I keep hitting unsubscribe and they don't do it. And I want to be mad at them, but they are my favorite restaurant. So it's difficult.

• 35:41Speaker 01

I have a snail version of this and I'm way off topic, but I have this like clean, this clean energy company that like sends me mail, sends me the same please switch to this clean energy source piece of physical mail every couple of weeks.

• 35:55David Imel?

  Damn.

• 35:56Speaker 01

And I have solar on my house. Like I don't need to do this. Like please stop asking. And I've, I've tried to get off this list. I've called them. I've sent mail. I've sent emails. I've tried. And I think the last time I tried, they're like, oh, it could take six to eight weeks to get you off the list. It's been months. I'm still on the list. I got one today. It's really.

• 36:14Andrew Manganelli?

  Name it right now.

• 36:15Speaker 01

It's just like clean energy, something, something. I'll find the name.

• 36:18David Imel?

  Clean Energy Corporation.

• 36:20Speaker 03

I still get a paper paste up.

• 36:23David Imel?

  Oh, yeah.

• 36:23Speaker 03

Every time I get paid here.

• 36:25David Imel?

  We got one today.

• 36:26Speaker 03

It's on my desk right now.

• 36:28David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 36:29Speaker 03

I have tried for a year to stop this.

• 36:32David Imel?

  Damn.

• 36:33Speaker 01

Clean Choice Energy, named and shamed. I got one today.

• 36:37David Imel?

That's like with Verizon. I have Fios and when you sign up, they start sending you paper mail and then you can say, I don't want to receive paper mail. And then you receive a paper mail saying, thanks for unsubscribing.

• 36:49Andrew Manganelli?

At least it's the last one. At least it's fine.

• 36:51Speaker 01

  So many companies do that.

• 36:52David Imel?

They say that and then they send you a bunch of brochures anyway.

• 36:55Andrew Manganelli?

I try and say like, if your crap ends up in my mailbox, I'm never, never using you ever. It's such a waste.

• 37:03David Imel?

  Yeah. Yep. All right.

• 37:04Speaker 05

  Back to Apple.

• 37:05David Imel?

Yeah, back to Apple. Okay. Apple Maps got Gaussian splatting in Apple Maps.

• 37:09Speaker 01

It looks a little better in their demo.

• 37:11David Imel?

Higher quality. Looks a little better.

• 37:12Speaker 05

They keep saying Gaussian splatting. Isn't this just generative?

• 37:15David Imel?

  No.

• 37:16Speaker 05

  They said that?

• 37:17Speaker 03

  Well, you can.

• 37:18David Imel?

  No, yeah, it's.

• 37:18Speaker 03

You can generate a Gaussian splat.

• 37:21David Imel?

Well, you can't. Well, not really. You have to take photos from a bunch of angles and then generate it.

• 37:26Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 37:27David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 37:27Speaker 03

Well, the Gaussian splat is just like you. You could train a model on a bunch of Gaussian splats and you could generate them. Which I'm sure they're doing some of.

• 37:34David Imel?

Yeah, but they're using mostly like satellite data and like flyover data and stuff.

• 37:38Speaker 03

  For maps, yeah.

• 37:39David Imel?

  For maps.

• 37:39Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 37:39David Imel?

Yeah. So it looks a little bit better. Uh, they now have para menopause and menopause tracking, which I know a lot about. Um, added to Apple Health. Uh, new CarPlay features, including video apps in CarPlay now, which I think got added to Android Auto pretty recently.

• 37:55Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 37:56David Imel?

  They called.

• 37:56Speaker 01

The new Android Auto has YouTube specifically.

• 37:59David Imel?

Yeah, YouTube. Is it still called Android Auto or do they change it to Google?

• 38:02Andrew Manganelli?

  It's still Android Auto.

• 38:03David Imel?

  Not for long.

• 38:03Speaker 05

  For now, yeah.

• 38:04David Imel?

It's gonna be Google Drive soon.

• 38:05Speaker 03

  Shit.

• 38:06David Imel?

Um, you can now share a one phone number between two iPhones.

• 38:10Speaker 01

One phone number between two, and they're both getting data and voice and everything?

• 38:15David Imel?

I don't know about that. They said that the carrier has to support it, though.

• 38:19Speaker 05

Why would you want to do this? I'm confused.

• 38:21David Imel?

  I, I don't know.

• 38:22Speaker 01

I could see doing the opposite, putting two different.

• 38:25Andrew Manganelli?

So your open claw can have its own phone?

• 38:27David Imel?

Well, you can do two different phone numbers.

• 38:29Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 38:30Speaker 05

  You joked, you're very.

• 38:32David Imel?

What'd you say? Wait, what'd you say?

• 38:33Andrew Manganelli?

So your, your open claw can have its own phone and.

• 38:36David Imel?

  And call people?

• 38:37Andrew Manganelli?

Or, or take calls for you.

• 38:38David Imel?

Jeez, my agent's in the corner. Uh, I don't know. Someone made a joke that so you can have your iPhone Air for the weekend and your iPhone Pro for the weekday.

• 38:47Andrew Manganelli?

  Marcus!

• 38:51Andrew Manganelli?

Marcus does switch the watches already.

• 38:54David Imel?

  Hold on.

• 38:55Speaker 03

  Wait a minute.

• 38:56David Imel?

It's actually not terrible. I don't know, whatever.

• 38:58Andrew Manganelli?

So you can party in the back.

• 38:59Speaker 01

Well, if I'm going to, if I'm going to Dub Dub, I need the Pro Max and then when I go back to regular.

• 39:03David Imel?

That's what I'm saying. I mean, I would love that because I love my Air.

• 39:06Speaker 01

  I might Google that later.

• 39:07David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 39:08Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 39:09David Imel?

Um, they added independent alarms for, uh, independent volume for basically every volume.

• 39:14Speaker 01

  Finally.

• 39:15David Imel?

  Thing on the phone.

• 39:16Speaker 01

God. This is another thing. This is another thing. Like, when you ask iPhone users, like, what's the biggest annoyance with the iPhone? Almost at the top of everyone's list is, I just miss alarms sometimes because my alarm volume was zero because the last thing I watched, I turned the volume down. Like, it just doesn't work all the time.

• 39:31Andrew Manganelli?

Uh, when you wrote this, I thought you meant like. Individual alarms can have different, you just mean that there's like a separate volume slider for alarms, timers and all that?

• 39:41Speaker 01

Yeah, the thing Android's had for decades.

• 39:43Andrew Manganelli?

I thought this was even further, like, I want this timer, I have set to be this volume, but this timer to be...

• 39:48Speaker 01

There's always been a separate volume for like, media and like, alarm volume, but alarm volume encompassed alarms, timers, and like, every other little, small thing.

• 39:57David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 39:58Speaker 01

  Which is insane.

• 39:58David Imel?

And they finally went and combed through the little things, and I'm glad that this was big enough to make it through that comb.

• 40:04Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 40:05David Imel?

Um, big deal, big deal, big deal, this one's really fun. Shortcuts, you can now just describe the shortcut you want in natural language and it'll make it for you.

• 40:13Speaker 01

  Good AI.

• 40:14David Imel?

Which is very cool. Um, we saw a bunch of demos of this, if you're a shortcuts fiend, this is gonna be cool for you.

• 40:20Speaker 01

And it just builds it in the shortcuts editor, so you can edit it after the fact. So it builds it all, you can go in the editor and like, change stuff if you want.

• 40:26David Imel?

Yeah, and it'll sync to your Mac, and you can also share the shortcut with other people, so, pretty cool. Uh, overhaul dictation, supposedly powered by Gemini-powered dictation, so that should correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, basically the dictation on iPhone should be way better.

• 40:42Speaker 03

Is that out right now? Is that in iOS 27?

• 40:45David Imel?

  That's in 27, yes.

• 40:46Speaker 03

It doesn't, it doesn't feel any better.

• 40:48Speaker 01

It's only better on the phones with 12 gigs of RAM. So the most advanced, improved on-device models are only on iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro.

• 41:00David Imel?

But is dictation in the advanced models?

• 41:02Speaker 01

And dictation, and one other thing, are the, I was told, the only two things that are new in that, like, that super new, advanced, best on-device model.

• 41:14David Imel?

  Wow.

• 41:14Speaker 01

So if you don't have better dictation, it may be because that's one of the things that didn't make it, if you don't have 12 gigs of RAM.

• 41:20David Imel?

  Strange.

• 41:20Speaker 01

Are you on not one of those two phones?

• 41:22Speaker 03

  No, I have a 17 Pro.

• 41:23Speaker 01

  So it should be better.

• 41:24David Imel?

  That's weird.

• 41:25Speaker 03

  It's not...

• 41:25Speaker 01

  Should be.

• 41:26Speaker 03

  It's not much better.

• 41:27Speaker 01

  Yeah. I can't tell.

• 41:29Speaker 03

  Up to.

• 41:29Speaker 01

I haven't seen it yet, but I was like not super.

• 41:33David Imel?

Yeah, this is a kind of random one. You can now have subscription bundles in the App Store. So if you're a developer and you sell multiple apps, you can do a subscription bundle that comes with a bunch of your apps. You can also partner, do a little partnership with another developer and offer your app plus another developer's app for a bundle price.

• 41:51Andrew Manganelli?

  It is a bundle price.

• 41:52David Imel?

  It's a collab.

• 41:53Speaker 01

  It's a collab.

• 41:53David Imel?

  Yeah, it's a collab.

• 41:54Speaker 01

  That's cool.

• 41:55David Imel?

  Yeah, it's kind of cool.

• 41:58David Imel?

  Yeah, okay.

• 41:58Andrew Manganelli?

Like a bundle of all the apps that are about to get Sherlocked from the virus.

• 42:02David Imel?

Please keep us alive bundle. You can now create calendar events with natural language. So you could just go into your calendar and say lunch with at Supernica with James at 3:00 P. M. And it'll add all the little details.

• 42:14Speaker 01

Sherlock counter is now two. That's specifically fantastical. That's like one of the things a lot of these new calendar apps, a primary feature is that you can add things with natural language.

• 42:25David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 42:26Speaker 01

Add a repeating event and it just does it for you. There it is. Sherlock counter number two.

• 42:30David Imel?

Find my update, they should have added a long ass time ago and I don't know how they didn't. You can now, so they redesigned the Find My UI a little bit. That's fine. But the big thing is it used to be that you could only share your live location for one hour until the end of the day or indefinitely. You can now set custom amounts of time to share your location.

• 42:47Speaker 01

  Wow, that's nice.

• 42:49David Imel?

  Yes.

• 42:49Speaker 01

  For my one week vacation.

• 42:50David Imel?

It is crazy that it took that long.

• 42:52Speaker 01

  Cool.

• 42:53David Imel?

You can now say, save any video frame as a photo. So if you stop in any video, you can just hit export as photo. That's something Android has had forever. So it's not major.

• 43:03Andrew Manganelli?

  But it's nice.

• 43:04David Imel?

  Something.

• 43:04Andrew Manganelli?

  That's nice.

• 43:05David Imel?

Shared albums in Apple Photos now support full resolution photos. I did not even realize they didn't before. And Android and Windows users can also contribute photos now.

• 43:15Andrew Manganelli?

  Could they really not before?

• 43:16David Imel?

  Apparently not.

• 43:17Andrew Manganelli?

  So funny.

• 43:17Speaker 01

  You just view it.

• 43:18David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 43:19Andrew Manganelli?

I love shared albums. Ever since kids and having like nieces and nephews now, every single one of my nieces or nephews or children has a shared album with all the grandparents, all the uncles.

• 43:29Speaker 05

I wonder who's gonna adopt this because same thing in my family, but we all use Google Photos.

• 43:34Andrew Manganelli?

Yep, we all use Google Photos.

• 43:35Speaker 05

It's like, yeah, Google Photos is the default. So I guess now they have this, which is nice.

• 43:39David Imel?

Yeah, but you know, I don't know. Yeah. You can now also set photo albums to expire after a certain period of time. I wish you could just do this with group chats because I don't freaking want to be in another group chat for indefinitely.

• 43:50Andrew Manganelli?

  Expire immediately.

• 43:52David Imel?

Expire. Yeah. Well, every time I make a temporary group chat, I name it going to destroy after event temporary.

• 43:59Speaker 01

  Nice.

• 44:00David Imel?

  And then the three people.

• 44:00Speaker 01

If you destroy it on your phone, does it destroy on everyone's phone? No, right?

• 44:03David Imel?

Um, probably not. You just leave it.

• 44:05Andrew Manganelli?

  This group chat will self-destruct.

• 44:06David Imel?

Oh, you leave it. You leave it. Yeah.

• 44:08Speaker 01

  Smart.

• 44:08David Imel?

Uh, okay. The dual camera feature where you can record what is in front of you as well as your face is now available in FaceTime. I didn't realize this wasn't true before and it makes a lot of sense.

• 44:18Andrew Manganelli?

  Hmm.

• 44:18David Imel?

So before in FaceTime, you had to just switch between your face and the thing that you were looking at, which was stupid. And it's very nice that you can actually, you know, do both at the same time now. I like that. When you pay with things online with Apple Pay, there is a much better UI now to select the card that you're using. Previously, and I've had to do this a million times, you, it's so complicated to like pick the right card because you have to scroll down to the bottom menu and then click like use different card, even though it was just a confusing UI before and they made it way better. So that's cool. They synced the step counts across the health and fitness apps. This was not synced before. It was annoying.

• 44:55Speaker 01

  So little things.

• 44:56David Imel?

Yeah. Health and fitness, like I think it was because like your Apple Watch and your phone like recorded different step amounts and they would get out of sync. And then if you opened the fitness app, it would show a different amount of steps than the health app sometimes. Like they were tracking steps differently, which is really dumb. So this is very much a snow leopard feature. Um, okay, this one's kind of cool. Call context, so this is like magic cue on the Pixel.

• 45:22Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 45:22David Imel?

When you call like an airline, it'll know that you're calling the airline, so it'll look through your email and pull up your confirmation number and put it on the screen.

• 45:30Speaker 01

This one is cool if it works.

• 45:33David Imel?

  Cool if it works.

• 45:33Speaker 01

I can see lots of ways that it wouldn't work.

• 45:35David Imel?

  Yes.

• 45:36Andrew Manganelli?

They also, at the end of it, if I remember correctly, had this weird way of saying like, "We're listening for the context, but we're not listening to the phone call."

• 45:44David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 45:45Andrew Manganelli?

It was like a very like, "We're listening, but we're not listening. We're not listening. I promise we're not listening."

• 45:49Speaker 01

It seems like they have to get the context somehow, and if you are calling the airline and you have a recent reservation from that airline, then that may be enough context for them to surface for latest.

• 46:01Andrew Manganelli?

You usually have like seven reservations though, so...

• 46:02Speaker 01

That's why I think it would be tough. It might not work every time.

• 46:05David Imel?

Yeah, yeah. Might give you an old reservation number. So that was most of the major stuff with just the iPhone. Okay.

• 46:11Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 46:12David Imel?

Next, we got the Mac, and we finally got the new name for the Mac, and it is Golden Gate.

• 46:17Speaker 01

Is that a state park? It is, right?

• 46:19Andrew Manganelli?

Another obscure reference. It's a bridge.

• 46:21David Imel?

What the hell is a Golden Gate? It's not a state park.

• 46:23Speaker 01

  It's typically been...

• 46:24Andrew Manganelli?

  I think it is.

• 46:25Speaker 01

So we had all the cats, leopards, no leopard.

• 46:27David Imel?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 46:28Speaker 01

Tiger. Then we had places in California, but typically they were state parks.

• 46:33David Imel?

There's Golden Gate Canyon State Park, but it's about the bridge, though.

• 46:37Andrew Manganelli?

  It's the bridge.

• 46:37David Imel?

  The other ones...

• 46:38Speaker 01

  Is it now just landmarks?

• 46:39David Imel?

So we've broken out of state parks. I guess the other ones were state parks, because it was Yosemite. Well, that was National... Yosemite's a national park. Joshua Tree is a...

• 46:46Andrew Manganelli?

  National park?

• 46:46David Imel?

National park. Big Sur is not a national park, that's a state park.

• 46:51Speaker 01

  We never got Joshua Tree.

• 46:52David Imel?

Yeah, we did. No, we didn't.

• 46:53Speaker 01

  No, we didn't.

• 46:54David Imel?

No, we didn't. How... We didn't do that yet?

• 46:56Speaker 01

  No.

• 46:56David Imel?

  That's crazy.

• 46:57Andrew Manganelli?

Damn, that would have been a good one.

• 46:58David Imel?

Dude, all the Apple people getting high on ayahuasca and Joshua Tree, and they didn't even use it as a name for Mac OS.

• 47:02Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, that's how they made that animation with Craig.

• 47:05David Imel?

  Yeah, that's great.

• 47:05Andrew Manganelli?

  And the hippie buzz.

• 47:06Speaker 01

  Yeah, the hippie buzz.

• 47:07Andrew Manganelli?

  That was actually pretty funny.

• 47:08David Imel?

  They lean into that.

• 47:09Andrew Manganelli?

That was a good one. I'll give them a lot of credit for that.

• 47:11David Imel?

I asked them straight up why they call it the crack marketing team, and they wouldn't give me an answer.

• 47:15Speaker 01

It's... I think that's... I think that's just a Craig joke that he is just keeping alive by himself. That's my theory. Is he gets on stage and he's like, "Are you gonna say it again?" And he's like, "Yeah." And I'm like, "All right, we're using it."

• 47:26David Imel?

They just kept saying, "We like to have fun." So that was interesting.

• 47:31Andrew Manganelli?

  Watch this rap.

• 47:32David Imel?

Anyway. macOS Golden Gate. Now, something we should say is that a lot of the features that came to the iPhone come to every other Apple platform.

• 47:40Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 47:41David Imel?

  So the calendar.

• 47:41Speaker 01

App opening, transparency slider, faster airdrop, all the stuff we were talking about.

• 47:46David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 47:46Speaker 01

  Also here.

• 47:47David Imel?

Yeah, so these are gonna be truncated.

• 47:49Speaker 01

  Corner Radii.

• 47:50David Imel?

  Corner Radii.

• 47:52Andrew Manganelli?

That's the name of this episode.

• 47:55David Imel?

  macOS Corner Radii.

• 47:57Speaker 01

There's a couple of cool things in Safari, I think that they did here.

• 47:59David Imel?

  Yeah, totally.

• 48:00Speaker 01

So one of them was, you can ask it, similar to building a Siri shortcut, you can ask it to build an extension, a Safari extension, to do a very specific thing.

• 48:09David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 48:10Speaker 01

And I got a demo of this and I watched and still you basically, in natural language, can type out or write out what you want it to do and it'll build that extension. If it sees an extension that is similar to what you're asking for, it will actually surface them.

• 48:22David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 48:22Speaker 01

So not a full-on Sherlock of every single extension. But it will still show you extensions.

• 48:27Andrew Manganelli?

Could you say, "I don't want to use that one, though, keep making it"?

• 48:30David Imel?

  Yeah, totally. You can. Yes.

• 48:31Andrew Manganelli?

So then now it's Sherlock's. It went from not Sherlocking to Sherlocking literally anything you want.

• 48:36David Imel?

But it's more like, oh, something already exists that you could use.

• 48:38Speaker 01

Yeah. Yeah. If it's just like, "Make me an extension to save bookmarks and rate recipes", it's like, "Well, okay, that exists. Like, that's a thing you can get here", and it'll actually do the nice thing and show you that.

• 48:48David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 48:48Speaker 01

But if you want to keep going, yeah, it'll make you an extension from scratch.

• 48:52Andrew Manganelli?

Build an extension to scroll past Google AI overview every time I search something.

• 48:58David Imel?

  That might work.

• 48:59Speaker 01

That is really cool, though, because I feel like a lot of my developer friends that will have an idea to build something will want to make a Chrome extension. Like, that is where their brain goes first. There's like a thriving developer community for Chrome extensions and not so much for Safari extensions. So this could be like a way to get people back building Safari.

• 49:16David Imel?

And I was gonna say about this, like, Apple is very good at taking things that people are doing outside of Apple ecosystem and then instead of being like, "We have a platform now that you can vibe code whatever you want", they're like, "In Safari. Now Safari supports vibe coding of Safari extensions."

• 49:32Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 49:33David Imel?

Instead of having like a nebulous terminal where you're like, "Code me a Chrome extension", you just say, "This is what I want to be able to do in my browser", and then it does it.

• 49:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 49:41David Imel?

Which I think is better for most people, probably. Yeah.

• 49:44Speaker 01

There's a couple of other smart things there. It will, if you want it to, use AI to organize your tabs into tab groups based on topics. So if you have like, what does Harper have, 75 tabs open at any point? You can just kind of group them together into things that are related to each other. And then as you keep browsing, it'll keep sorting.

• 50:00David Imel?

They kind of ripped that from DIA, not gonna lie.

• 50:02Speaker 01

There's a lot of browsers that do this now. I don't know if I call that a full-on Sherlock, but that is definitely taken from other browsers.

• 50:07Speaker 05

Okay, wait, if you have 75 tabs open and it's auto-sorting them into tab groups?

• 50:13Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 50:13Speaker 05

What if there's something that could be split between two tab groups?

• 50:16Speaker 01

  So.

• 50:16Speaker 05

How do I find that as a user?

• 50:18David Imel?

  Good question. We're not sure.

• 50:22David Imel?

Yeah, I think I asked someone like that, like, if I have two, because I asked them, like, how is it deciding how to group them? And I was like, if I, if there's a, if there's two Google Docs documents open and the contents of one Google Docs is about cats? And then I have a pet store page open. Is it gonna group the Google Doc with the cat pet store, with the pet store? Or is it gonna group the Google Doc with another Google Doc?

• 50:49Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 50:50David Imel?

And they didn't really have an answer for me.

• 50:51Andrew Manganelli?

That's funny, because it's like, are you just matching Favacons? Or are you actually like reading the content of the page?

• 50:57Speaker 05

Or like, you're looking up cats and you're also looking up Japan? And then you start looking up cats in Japan.

• 51:02David Imel?

  Right.

• 51:03Speaker 05

  Where does it go?

• 51:04David Imel?

I don't know. They just go, alright, put them all back together.

• 51:06Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. It would be cool if the tab group had a reasoning, if you like right-click.

• 51:10David Imel?

If it gave you a reason?

• 51:11Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, of like why it chose that. Because it would be really funny.

• 51:14Speaker 01

  Somewhere in the code, yeah.

• 51:15David Imel?

  Yeah, somewhere in the thinking.

• 51:16Speaker 01

I don't know, in DIA, it's interesting because when I have tab groups, I don't make tab groups. But when I right-click and like open a new tab, a bunch of stuff, that creates a tab group. Because it knows I'm doing this tree of things and it keeps them together. So that's, I imagine there'll be animations that at least make it clear what is happening while it's happening.

• 51:31David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 51:32Speaker 01

  So that's cool.

• 51:33David Imel?

Safari is also adding an ability to monitor a webpage for if it changes. So this, the common use case of this is obviously like concert tickets. But you can only have it checked once a day, which means you definitely cannot use it for scalping.

• 51:50Speaker 01

  Well, as...

• 51:51David Imel?

And you have to tell it when to check, I believe.

• 51:54Andrew Manganelli?

There was a different one, though, that was like using context. It could see, I guess it's kind of the same just because we're talking about concert tickets, but it was like, there's a lottery for this concert. And it's like, I think they took a screenshot of it and said, like, "Remind me when this lottery is opening," which was kind of cool and felt like a vast difference between I/O, where they're like, "I want to go to this concert, do everything for me."

• 52:17David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 52:18Andrew Manganelli?

Siri's like, "I'll remind you when you can pay for it yourself."

• 52:21David Imel?

Yeah, and it's sort of just a, it's more of a little reminder tool than it is an agentic, like, "We're gonna completely get you the concert ticket." Yeah.

• 52:30Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 52:30David Imel?

So that might Sherlock something, to be honest, but it's not, probably not as powerful as some other extensions are. So maybe it's not quite Sherlock. The other major thing that they made a big deal about, the sidebars are now stretching to the screen edge.

• 52:43Speaker 01

  Huge.

• 52:44David Imel?

So, yeah, if you have like the Finder window open or something, it's basically just making better, it's taking more advantage of the screen real estate.

• 52:53Speaker 01

  Better use of space.

• 52:54David Imel?

Better use of space, unlike the HTC One Eleven.

• 52:57Speaker 01

  If you know, you know.

• 52:58David Imel?

If you know, you know. Okay, and then, oh yeah, the one big thing that they didn't ask about, that they didn't really mention, but I asked if there was anything that they didn't really mention. They said Mac OS is now much better at remembering the orientation of the screens you have plugged in.

• 53:15Andrew Manganelli?

This is like the biggest, this is...

• 53:16David Imel?

  Actually huge.

• 53:17Andrew Manganelli?

They could have only said that and I would have stood up and clapped.

• 53:19Speaker 01

This is, this is big. As a person who recently, like very recently, switched to being a laptop person who's plugging into multiple sets of monitors.

• 53:27David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 53:27Speaker 01

I am frequently annoyed by the jumbling of monitor windows that happens when I unplug the monitor and replug it back in. And they never go back to where they're supposed to.

• 53:35David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 53:36Speaker 01

Allegedly, they're gonna go back to where they're supposed to.

• 53:38David Imel?

Allegedly. I think, I think Windows announced that they had this like quite a while ago, so it's nice to see this on Mac. But they said it'll know if you're plugged into one screen, two screens, three screens, and then it'll, it'll just automatically, you know, it'll bound it when I set it up.

• 53:50Speaker 01

  Fire.

• 53:51David Imel?

Which is cool. iPadOS 27 gets everything that the iPhone got. There are some other strange improvements, like transferring files from an external drive to an iPad and vice versa is now five times faster than it was before.

• 54:04Speaker 05

  Wow.

• 54:05David Imel?

I'm not really sure what the roadblock was there previously.

• 54:08Speaker 05

Only the Thunderbolt ones or all of them?

• 54:09David Imel?

I... It says up to, just like the AirDrop.

• 54:13Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 54:13David Imel?

  So, who knows?

• 54:16Speaker 05

  Five times faster.

• 54:17David Imel?

Yeah. Other than that, it basically gets all the same improvements as the iPhone and then you also get sort of the Safari benefits that you're getting from the back. Apple Watch, they didn't change a lot here. We're gonna note as well, like, they didn't even have like an Apple Watch section really in the keynote and same with tvOS and also Home.

• 54:37Speaker 05

And Vision Pro, yeah, because no one cares.

• 54:39Andrew Manganelli?

They showed a couple of Vision Pro things.

• 54:41Speaker 05

They showed us floating Siri bar that three people are gonna use.

• 54:45David Imel?

  I will have.

• 54:45Andrew Manganelli?

  Should've been Finder guy.

• 54:46David Imel?

I am very excited about the Vision Pro, we'll get there. Apple Watch, they changed, they have this like dynamic app view now where when you press the digital crown, it shows your six most used apps first, instead of just bringing up all of the apps and then you can click into all of the apps after. That's basically the only change.

• 55:04Speaker 05

  There it is. WatchOS 27.

• 55:06David Imel?

  WatchOS 27!

• 55:07Speaker 05

  There you're seeing it.

• 55:08David Imel?

Apparently there's a better Workout Buddy that has upgrades and better sleep tracking. You get the better Wi-Fi connectivity, faster music playback. If you click the music playback on the watch and it's playing from your phone, it'll apparently happen faster because the connection is better. There's better battery efficiency. However, this was a big deal. People were very upset about this. They dropped support for a lot of Apple Watches on this one. So on the keynote, they said it's only supported by Apple Watch Series 9... Series 10 and above, I think, which everyone was like, the Series 10 just came out.

• 55:40Speaker 05

  That's the last two generations.

• 55:42David Imel?

  Yeah, last two generations.

• 55:43Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 55:43David Imel?

But then, someone from Apple said, "We made a mistake on the keynote. It's actually Series 9 and above," which is still only the last three generations.

• 55:50Andrew Manganelli?

And I checked online and they... It does say that now. It at least says Series 9, because I was like, this is something that you can tell us is wrong, but until it's showing up somewhere and it is changed.

• 55:59David Imel?

Yeah. It's still kinda surprising that, you know, Apple Watch Ultra 1 does not have support for WatchOS 27, which is kinda crazy, the SE 2. Yeah, very weird. Okay, Vision Pro.

• 56:12Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 56:13David Imel?

  This was the David update.

• 56:14Andrew Manganelli?

  There it is.

• 56:15David Imel?

No, this was the David update.

• 56:16Speaker 01

  Vision OS 27.

• 56:18David Imel?

  Vision OS 27, baby.

• 56:19Speaker 01

Oh, this is, I did, yeah, I did mention.

• 56:22David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 56:22Speaker 01

I thought, as soon as they announced this, I was like, oh, David's gonna do that.

• 56:25David Imel?

  Yes, I am.

• 56:26Speaker 01

So what are you gonna do on Vision Pro, David?

• 56:27David Imel?

The major change in Vision Pro, besides all the, you know, Wi-Fi speed, whatever, who cares about Wi-Fi speed? I don't care about Wi-Fi.

• 56:33Speaker 01

  You guys remember Vision Pro?

• 56:34David Imel?

You can get rid of the Wi-Fi, I'm still excited about this feature. So now, on Vision Pro, there's a feature, where you, there was always a feature where you could spatialize photos, right? Now, you can spatialize panoramas, that's not something they had access to before, and, and, in the Vision Pro, there's a thing called Environments, and they had them built into the Vision Pro, where you could like turn the digital crown and you would slowly blend into these beautiful worlds that were handpicked by Apple, they were hand-scanned by Apple with these special cameras. No, no, no, no, no, you can use your own panoramas as Environments now.

• 57:06Speaker 01

So to be clear, before, on the Vision Pro, I looked it up, there was exactly six Environments.

• 57:12David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 57:13Speaker 01

So when you like shut down the transparency and like go into one of those worlds, you could either be in Yosemite, Mount Hood.

• 57:20Andrew Manganelli?

This is where Joshua Tree is.

• 57:21Speaker 01

Maui, Joshua Tree, White Sands, and the moon. That's it.

• 57:26Andrew Manganelli?

  All California.

• 57:28David Imel?

  The moon is also California.

• 57:29Speaker 01

  And the moon, yeah, California.

• 57:30Speaker 03

  Well, the soundstage isn't.

• 57:31David Imel?

On my website, I offer 60 different Environments, so Apple, uh, Apple, if you wanna buy them from me, you can.

• 57:40Andrew Manganelli?

Apple was like, how do we get Waveform to talk about Vision Pro?

• 57:42David Imel?

  That's probably what happened.

• 57:43Andrew Manganelli?

That was exactly why I added that.

• 57:44Speaker 01

  And they nailed that.

• 57:45David Imel?

They also couldn't really make a ton of updates to Vision Pro, because the guy that used to head up the Vision Pro is now the head of Siri, and so that's why Vision Pro is kind of like spiraling at the moment.

• 57:55Speaker 01

King of, nevermind. Things that people don't use very much.

• 57:59David Imel?

Uh, but there is like, there is, we're gonna talk about Siri in a bit, but there is a floating Siri orb now that you can interact with, uh, that's just always there.

• 58:07Andrew Manganelli?

This is my favorite thing they announced, period.

• 58:11David Imel?

  What?

• 58:11Andrew Manganelli?

  In the whole.

• 58:12David Imel?

The floating, the floating Siri orb?

• 58:13Andrew Manganelli?

  The floating Siri orb.

• 58:14David Imel?

And the fact that you can move it around?

• 58:16Andrew Manganelli?

Yep. It should've been Finder Guy.

• 58:18David Imel?

It should've been, but it's not going to be, and I'm okay with it.

• 58:20Andrew Manganelli?

  Imagine him like popping.

• 58:21David Imel?

But the cool thing about the Siri. You don't want another Clippy, you know, like.

• 58:23Andrew Manganelli?

  No! Exactly what I want.

• 58:26Speaker 01

  You want to create memes.

• 58:27Speaker 05

  He does want another Clippy.

• 58:29David Imel?

You know the Palantir orb in Lord of the Rings, not Palantir, the missile company?

• 58:34Speaker 05

  The same thing.

• 58:35Speaker 01

Lord of the Rings evil guy?

• 58:36David Imel?

Yeah. Do you know the Palantir orb in Lord of the Rings?

• 58:39Speaker 01

  No.

• 58:40David Imel?

Okay, well, it's the thing that they like can look into, they basically teleports you to a different place and you can like look around at it. That's why they call that Palantir, because it's like we're spying on everyone on the planet. And I wish I was joking. But, uh, anyway, that's basically what the Siri orb looks like. You like look at it and then suddenly you have magic access.

• 59:00Speaker 05

I just want my digital assistant to be that orb. I think that is genius.

• 59:05David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 59:05Speaker 05

  Put it everywhere.

• 59:07David Imel?

Other interesting things about Vision Pro, you can now like look at things in your real environment and just like ask Siri about them.

• 59:13Speaker 01

  Yeah, they circled search.

• 59:15David Imel?

Circle search, but in the real world.

• 59:17Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 59:17David Imel?

And, and there's new, there's a new app kit for Safari so that you can make 3D environments inside of Safari. So if you're in Safari in Vision Pro, you can tap a little thing and then it envelops you in the entire environment.

• 59:29Speaker 01

They also added Iceland. Yeah, we can take Marcus to Iceland.

• 59:32David Imel?

You know, I also offer Iceland. I also offer Iceland environment, just so you know.

• 59:37Speaker 01

  So.

• 59:37David Imel?

  And they're probably better.

• 59:38Speaker 01

  Does Google.

• 59:39Andrew Manganelli?

Enjoy the Apple lawyers on that one.

• 59:41David Imel?

Iceland, yeah. Iceland, okay. Okay, we're basically done with the hardware because tvOS didn't really get upgraded. The HomePod, they just forgot existed, I think because

• 59:52Speaker 01

  Didn't mention it once.

• 59:53David Imel?

It cannot run any of the Siri stuff because it just doesn't have any RAM.

• 59:56Speaker 01

Isn't that crazy? The Siri box doesn't do the new Siri? And everyone who's bought a HomePod, by the way, all the, all the $400 HomePods out there and the HomePod Mini's and all those, they're not gonna get the new Siri. So everyone who's sort of bought into, like the people who are most likely to accidentally use Siri once in a while are not gonna see these improvements.

• 1:00:18Speaker 05

Doesn't the iPhone 16 not even have the new Siri?

• 1:00:22Speaker 01

No, they'll have the new Siri, just won't have the most advanced on device models, which is like the couple of small things like the notation or dictation. But, uh, yeah, the Siri box doesn't get better Siri.

• 1:00:31David Imel?

To be fair, the original HomePod came out in 2018, so they were not thinking about this.

• 1:00:34Speaker 01

It's still like, I bought my Google Home Assistant in like 2018 or whatever, and that has a new assistant. That just got updated this year.

• 1:00:41David Imel?

But that's all cloud-based, whereas Apple is like, we're taking your personal context from your local stuff.

• 1:00:47Speaker 01

  That's true.

• 1:00:48David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:49Speaker 01

So yeah. One thing as well, we didn't notice, we didn't know earlier is that on the iPhone, like when you update, there's now this persistent notification in your settings that's just like indexing and progress. Yeah, it's a big deal. And we'll talk about Siri, so we might get to this in the next section, but this is a big part of what makes Siri the new Siri. Yeah. Is it's going to have way more personal context. It will index all of your stuff. It may take some time to do that, but when it's done, it'll be worth it. Yeah. There's a few small last minute things. AirPods now have customizable EQ. Oh, thank God.

• 1:01:20Andrew Manganelli?

Rufus cheered out loud during that.

• 1:01:22Speaker 03

Finally. It's, it's years over date. I can't believe it took this long. It's so, yeah, no, this is should be, this should have been a feature that came with them like in AirPods one 10 years ago.

• 1:01:34Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:01:34Speaker 03

And it's, it's ridiculous that it hasn't had it forever. And it's a little disappointing that it's only three bands because.

• 1:01:40Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:01:41Speaker 03

  That's $3,000? No. Yeah. It's so expensive.

• 1:01:45Speaker 01

Why does it use the word? Is it just high, medium, low? That's it? That was?

• 1:01:48Speaker 03

Yep. Yeah. You have high, high, high end, mid.

• 1:01:51Speaker 01

I'll take what we can get. I'll take it.

• 1:01:53Speaker 05

I have a question about this.

• 1:01:54Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:01:55Speaker 05

Because isn't the whole point of AirPods Pro and AirPods and stuff that it has the adaptive EQ that will like adjust to your ears and hearing? So why even have this?

• 1:02:03Speaker 01

So yes, and that was basically their, their argument the entire time. And I think if you asked if Ellis was here, he'd be fuming about how things don't sound like other things. I can feel that. But like, yes, Apple's AirPods are computers in your ears and they're constantly adapting to sounding differently all the time based on your environment and based on what's playing. And so the EQ theoretically is also not like other EQs. It will, it will generally, it'll generally affect what you're listening to, but not in a precise scientific way. I still think that's fine. I'm glad to have the customization. It's about time. Every time I review earbuds, I always talk about how they sound out the box, but also eh, this kind of doesn't matter that much because you can make them sound the way they want to. Yeah. But I've never been able to say that about AirPods. Now I can. That's true.

• 1:02:48Speaker 01

I hope it's for all AirPods. Some people think that the AirPods Pro 2 sound better than the AirPods Pro 3. Exactly.

• 1:02:53Speaker 03

  I have one of them.

• 1:02:54Speaker 01

And that was a balance thing. And ideally this is what you can use to dial that bass back a little bit and actually make it sound the way you want.

• 1:03:00Speaker 03

You can have your AirPods 2 again.

• 1:03:01Speaker 01

I have a much, I have a much more granular critique that I will spare our dear viewers. Take it. But.

• 1:03:07David Imel?

No, I want to hear it.

• 1:03:08Speaker 03

  You want to hear it?

• 1:03:09David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:09Andrew Manganelli?

  Speedrun.

• 1:03:10Speaker 03

So when I listen to noises on my AirPods Pro 3, which I did buy and I still have, they're sitting on my desk in case they ever get firmware updated. When I type on a keyboard, I have this little resonance in like somewhere between 600 and 2000 Hz. That's like bing, bing, bing, bing, bing, bing, bing, bing, bing, bing. Every time I'm typing, it feels a little thocky. And I just don't really like that. It's just annoying. Every time I get in a car and I close the door, it sounds like a bomb goes off in my ear.

• 1:03:37David Imel?

  That's actually very common.

• 1:03:39Speaker 03

Yeah, Pro 3s do that all over the place. The Pro 2s never did it. I don't know what changed. And sometimes I feel like the noise cancelling is so... It's really good, but it's so powerful that I'm like, I've just alienated from my environment. It's just uncomfortable and I don't like it. And just overall, the sound of the Pro 2s is... It feels a little more balanced. I feel like the Pro 3s have like a sharp, high-end, like the high mid-range can get sharper, but that's a three-band EQ, isn't going to solve that. And I just still use my Pro 2s, even though I have three on my desk.

• 1:04:22Speaker 03

I have the Pro 3s on my desk and I only ever use the Pro 2s because they just like are the ones that I don't hate. I also won't be using the EQ with them because I am so used to the way the Pro 2s sound.

• 1:04:32David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:32Speaker 03

I use them to listen to so much material. That's like how I check everything I ever mix. I'm not changing that for anything. Like that is my... I know what that sounds like really well. I'm not...

• 1:04:42David Imel?

I've heard from a few people that the Pro 2s sound better than the Pro 3.

• 1:04:45Speaker 03

  I do.

• 1:04:45David Imel?

And I'll just trust you guys because I'm not the audio master.

• 1:04:47Speaker 05

Rufus, how do you feel about frequency response charts?

• 1:04:50Speaker 03

  I, you know...

• 1:04:51Andrew Manganelli?

  Cut it off.

• 1:04:52David Imel?

  Cut them off.

• 1:04:53Speaker 03

I don't have too much to say about that.

• 1:04:56David Imel?

  Good.

• 1:04:56Speaker 01

And that is a good place to take a quick break.

• 1:04:59David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:59Speaker 01

Because we got plenty more to talk about with Siri. And also, we have a dad here, so we can talk about parental controls. Because I want thoughts. But before we do that, trivia.

• 1:05:15Speaker 01

I'm gonna add this in post, but were you paying attention? Of course I was paying attention. Of course you were. So you know that in the Siri AI section, a notification popped up that said the Golden Gate Bridge is painted in a color officially known as... Oh. What? Oh, I did see that. Oh, what did it say?

• 1:05:32Andrew Manganelli?

I remember the obvious color part.

• 1:05:34Speaker 01

Oh, I do know it. Oh, yes.

• 1:05:36Andrew Manganelli?

I don't remember the specific adjective.

• 1:05:38Speaker 01

I remember that. Well, I watched it. Okay, yeah, I'm writing this down.

• 1:05:41Andrew Manganelli?

I was surprised by it. It's not what I expected.

• 1:05:44David Imel?

It's not what you think. It's like Mermaid Tail or something.

• 1:05:49David Imel?

  They would.

• 1:05:50Speaker 01

Dang, you know what's funny? Because when you do the "were you paying attention" clips, typically I'm a mix of paying attention. I'm paying close attention sometimes, but I'm also live tweeting.

• 1:06:00David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:00Speaker 01

And I'm also taking pictures. And so a lot of times I'll see something and I'll go, "Wow, that's really interesting." And I'll take a picture and I'll write it in my notes and I'll live tweet it. And then I'll look up and people are applauding. And I definitely just missed something. I missed something for sure.

• 1:06:13David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:14Speaker 01

So, uh, all right, I'm glad I got that one.

• 1:06:16David Imel?

  Yeah, okay.

• 1:06:18Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:06:18David Imel?

Well, we'll get back to Daddy after the break.

• 1:06:21Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:06:25Speaker 01

  Should we keep that?

• 1:06:26David Imel?

Yeah, because if you want, I don't know.

• 1:06:27Speaker 01

All right, let's keep that. Yeah.

• 1:06:28David Imel?

I'm talking about Andrew, by the way.

• 1:09:48Andrew Manganelli?

All right, we're back. More Dub Dub. Something I was pretty, even though this is, you know, my kids are not old enough to really be doing parental controls. Lane does not have an iPhone. I'm keeping her on Android right now. But, um, so there's

• 1:10:03David Imel?

  How old is she?

• 1:10:04Andrew Manganelli?

  She has two.

• 1:10:08Andrew Manganelli?

A bunch of new parental controls, which I think, first of all, they did all of this because next they're going to talk about AI. So they wanted to be like, look at us. We're safe. We're private. Applaud us. Then we're going to talk about AI, which you're way more skeptical about. And two, just because these are important and so many more kids have phones. And ultimately with all the announcements they did in this, I think the biggest thing they did was the redesign of setting up child accounts, which is like just a much easier setup process to be able to include all of these new restrictions and screen time and everything. So they added a new child's account, which one thing they did was if you have a regular account already on one of you, for one of your kids, you can convert those accounts back to this new children's account.

• 1:10:53Andrew Manganelli?

There's a new setup assistant that I just mentioned. Some of them are like pre-made groups. One was just called like Essentials Only, which has like FaceTime, phone, messages, maps and settings. Like those are the only apps you are allowed. And then one thing they also announced in that is being able to gradually allow apps after you already do the setup process with the phones you're setting up, which is cool. One of the ways that can happen is whether it's through the App Store or I guess apps on your phones, kids can request to be able to use apps or download apps with their parents. So like, Even in this spot right now, we've had parental controls on computers and phones and everything. They're just trickier to set up. This is like a much more granular

• 1:11:37Andrew Manganelli?

practice of it. So you can start it off totally locked down. You know, like I got my first smartphone, or sorry, my first phone when I was in seventh grade.

• 1:11:47Speaker 01

  Old.

• 1:11:48Andrew Manganelli?

Because, yes. And it was because I started playing sports and there was a kid in our school who got, or a different school that got left behind at a school and the parents couldn't find them. So my mom was like, you need a way to contact me.

• 1:12:00Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:12:00Andrew Manganelli?

We're gonna do this, even though you're probably too young to have a phone.

• 1:12:02Speaker 01

That kid is still traumatized from that. Probably. Cause you started playing sports and your mom wanted to bet on FanDuel. We never found him.

• 1:12:09Andrew Manganelli?

I have no, he's gone. Maybe listening out there somewhere.

• 1:12:11Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:12:12Andrew Manganelli?

But, um, so like, lock them down. You can call me in an emergency. That's really all you should be able to do first. Okay. Now you're showing you're more responsible. You can open up this or that. Uh, so I think that's a cool way of doing it. There's also the browser website request. So you can just request to visit different websites, depending on how locked down you are.

• 1:12:31Speaker 01

  Polly market.

• 1:12:33Andrew Manganelli?

If you're a parent and get that Kalshi request.

• 1:12:35Speaker 01

  You get the Kalshi request?

• 1:12:38Speaker 01

  That's hilarious.

• 1:12:40Andrew Manganelli?

So I really like that idea of kids being, asking for approval. They also have a new screen time redesign, which does a bunch of different things. It lists groups or apps in like different categories and you can adjust allowances based on the categories or based on times of day, which is awesome because you can really limit screen time during school hours.

• 1:13:03Speaker 01

  Yeah, exactly. Pretty specifically.

• 1:13:04Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:04Speaker 01

Like you can request, like you can use apps out of school hours more freely, but if you're in school, you better not be on Instagram, bro.

• 1:13:13Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. Or really on your phone at all.

• 1:13:15Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's true. Yeah.

• 1:13:16Andrew Manganelli?

And so, and then I do think it has, uh, inside the settings, a way to adjust allowances kind of like on the fly. So I'm sure whether your kid was bad or good, you can then change allowances based on that. Like, oh, you did great on your test. You can have 30 more minutes of YouTube tonight. Like, that's probably a pretty cool way of.

• 1:13:35Speaker 01

That would've been huge for me. 30 more minutes of Kalshi. She baby.

• 1:13:37David Imel?

Is that gonna be your parenting style?

• 1:13:39Andrew Manganelli?

  Mine?

• 1:13:40David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:40Andrew Manganelli?

She's never gonna have a phone?

• 1:13:41David Imel?

  Really?

• 1:13:42Andrew Manganelli?

No, she'll have a phone for sure. But like, just thinking about.

• 1:13:46Speaker 01

You may need an AI pen, because you can't do anything.

• 1:13:49David Imel?

I think straight to smart glasses is a move, yeah.

• 1:13:51Andrew Manganelli?

  Straight to smart glasses?

• 1:13:53David Imel?

  Straight to AI glasses.

• 1:13:54Speaker 03

Well, the glasses will be the paradigm by the time she's old enough to have.

• 1:13:56Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah, sure.

• 1:13:57David Imel?

  Won't even need a phone.

• 1:13:57Andrew Manganelli?

I do think about it all the time of like, the [BLEEP] I got away with as a kid.

• 1:14:01David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:01Andrew Manganelli?

And how my kids will not be able to get away with anything. I will know pretty much everything that happens.

• 1:14:07Speaker 01

That's what we think, but it's because the new generation will be getting away with different stuff.

• 1:14:12Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, well, new generations don't have a dad who's on a tech podcast that knows all the [BLEEP] that I can do, so they're screwed. Sorry, guys.

• 1:14:18Speaker 03

Do you know what your kids are doing in the metaverse?

• 1:14:21Andrew Manganelli?

They won't be in the metaverse.

• 1:14:22Speaker 03

How do you know? How will you know?

• 1:14:23Andrew Manganelli?

Because the metaverse already is given up on by Meta.

• 1:14:26Speaker 01

Yeah, but the ner- but they're gonna be in Neuralink.

• 1:14:29Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, gosh.

• 1:14:30Speaker 01

They're gonna be trading on CalShea.

• 1:14:31Speaker 03

Yeah, I don't know what my kids are thinking about.

• 1:14:33Speaker 01

  No.

• 1:14:33Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:14:35Speaker 01

  Unfortunately, but the computer does.

• 1:14:36David Imel?

  Elon Musk does.

• 1:14:38Andrew Manganelli?

One question I had for you guys who had.

• 1:14:41Speaker 01

  No kids.

• 1:14:41Andrew Manganelli?

  Went through.

• 1:14:43David Imel?

  Thirty-one years old? Unmarried?

• 1:14:46Andrew Manganelli?

  I mean, that's.

• 1:14:47David Imel?

  Childless tech man?

• 1:14:51Andrew Manganelli?

So they're doing a thing where you can also approve new contacts in apps. They just called it where FaceTime messages, phone are pretty obvious. Do you know if it extends into other apps? Because the contacts that I would be the most worried about are Roblox, are WhatsApp, are a little more online-y things. And I don't know if they even would be able to do that, but they first just said contacts and apps. And I was like, in the online video game world, that's where the predators are. That's where I want my kids requesting.

• 1:15:19Speaker 01

I do think that is, for a long time, been the challenge of a lot of these tools, is you can restrict which apps they do or don't have access to. But then, once you go into those apps, the content in the apps is kind of like, if you just give them YouTube. YouTube is all of the stuff on YouTube. So I think that's, that's more of like a high level control of like, once they're in that app, it's everything that comes with that app.

• 1:15:41David Imel?

Remember during the Epic and Google trial, they had like a three day long disposition on what a game is. So I don't think.

• 1:15:49Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, it probably won't, but that would be something.

• 1:15:51Speaker 05

I mean, they did add the like age API thing that developers could implement. So that's like maybe one indicator of how they're looking at doing this kind of stuff.

• 1:16:00Andrew Manganelli?

It all is pretty cool. I like how granular it is. And I just really think the most important thing here is how easy it is to set up for parents. So parents will just actually use it.

• 1:16:11David Imel?

And Apple launched a dedicated website for parents to actually learn how to use this, which is helpful. Again, I think that these features are like super important. I also think that most parents don't know they exist. So any way that Apple can get out, even Google, Apple, whoever's making these parental control features, like to bring awareness to these things, I think that's very, very important. They should have a setup. Yeah. But they will say like, when you do set up an iPhone, there is a, I'm setting this up for someone else. And then it asks, is it a kid? And then I think they probably give you some sort of setup flow for like parental controls. So.

• 1:16:46Speaker 01

And their age and all that.

• 1:16:47David Imel?

  Yeah. So that's great.

• 1:16:49Speaker 01

I was in my briefing for this with a bunch of parents and they loved this part of the briefing.

• 1:16:56Andrew Manganelli?

I'm so happy I don't have to deal with it yet. I've got a few years.

• 1:16:59Speaker 01

Yeah, there were people, I guess most of them were actively trying to do some sort of like parental controls with the existing tools and the, the requests that they had were basically all solved by these new sets of tools. So that was cool.

• 1:17:11Andrew Manganelli?

I'm just imagining me with my phone up and being like, Lane, clean up your toys. And I have this slider for like YouTube allowance like right here. And she's watching it tick down as she's not doing what I want.

• 1:17:21David Imel?

  Yeah. No Roblox for you?

• 1:17:22Speaker 01

My other read on this, which was, I don't know, this is just the way I think about tech companies, but it's just like, get your kid an iPhone.

• 1:17:29David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:30Speaker 01

Get your kid an iPhone. Because you have all these tools and it'll be super great. And also when the kid gets used to the iPhone super, super early, they are much more likely to continue to buy iPhones as they grow up.

• 1:17:39David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:40Speaker 01

And we know the story of, yeah, we know. The story of the iPhone in the US is like, kids just want iPhones. So

• 1:17:46David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:46Speaker 01

Now you have a good reason to get them.

• 1:17:47David Imel?

  Get your mom an iPhone.

• 1:17:48Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:17:49David Imel?

  Get your kid an iPhone.

• 1:17:50Speaker 01

  So that's that.

• 1:17:51David Imel?

Biggest, baddest, most anticipated two-year wait of all time, bigger than Avengers Endgame. It's Siri and Siri AI, which is just Siri with another name.

• 1:18:03Speaker 01

  So the new Siri.

• 1:18:04David Imel?

  Be back.

• 1:18:05Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:18:06David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:18:06Speaker 01

  At a high level.

• 1:18:08David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:18:09Speaker 01

I feel that the new Siri is not that crazy. It is about what we expected, as far as capabilities, anyway. The thing that Apple always does when they introduce a new thing, especially if it's in a new product category, is they make it the thing that works with the iPhone and the rest of the ecosystem really well. So you have other AI tools, especially large language models that you can use. You've been able to get Gemini on your iPhone and Claude and ChatGPT. What is the thing about Siri that would make you even try to use it when you already have those things? Well, it's the one that can plug deeply into your, your personal context and the stuff that's on your iPhone. Okay, great. What does that mean?

• 1:18:49Speaker 01

That means it can read your iMessages, it can look at your calendar, it can see things that were in your group chats and your notes and your email because it's on your phone. And it can actually search through that stuff. It's indexed very, very specifically. And can even take some actions on your behalf, mostly just by digging into apps. It can send messages for you. It can add calendar events, reminders, notes, all using those like first-party Apple apps. My immediate question, seeing all of that stuff was, well, what if I don't use all those Apple apps, right? I, I, obviously you can use iMessage, but what if I use WhatsApp? What if I use Google Calendar? What if I use Spotify? What if I use a different podcast app? Is this stuff gonna work?

• 1:19:31Speaker 01

Anyway, the idea is if you have a specific app that you want it to use for requests, like if I have, say, Pocket Casts that I want it to open podcasts with, if I ever go, "Hey Siri," which, sorry for triggering all of your series. If I ever say that and go, "What is that podcast that Kevin recommended a week ago? Can you play that?" It'll go search through your iMessage, find the podcast and play it by default.

• 1:19:55David Imel?

And it'll just play away for him. If it's a supported app.

• 1:19:58Speaker 01

It'll play it. It'll play it by default in Apple Podcasts. But if I ask for it to play in Pocket Casts and the developer has enabled that, then it should work.

• 1:20:06David Imel?

You can go into the default apps section, and there are default app. For email messaging, calling, call filtering, browser, translation, passwords.

• 1:20:15Speaker 01

But that's for clicks, not for Siri.

• 1:20:17David Imel?

I think Siri will access these as well.

• 1:20:20Speaker 01

  Really?

• 1:20:20David Imel?

So if I say, let's see, let's try this, because I just changed my default email app to Gmail.

• 1:20:25Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:20:26David Imel?

Hey Siri, send an email to Adam Melina telling him he needs to pick me up. Oh, it just died.

• 1:20:34Speaker 01

  It's a bug.

• 1:20:34David Imel?

  Let's try again.

• 1:20:35Speaker 01

  It's beta software.

• 1:20:36David Imel?

Send an email to Adam Melina telling him to pick me up milk after work.

• 1:20:39Speaker 01

  Got you fam.

• 1:20:40David Imel?

All right. Yeah, yeah, it didn't do Gmail. But it did say pick up milk after work, except for my iPhone.

• 1:20:48Speaker 01

  And it did Apple Mail?

• 1:20:49David Imel?

  It did Apple.

• 1:20:49Speaker 01

Okay, so that's my suspicion. So we'll see how that works and we'll see.

• 1:20:53David Imel?

  Wait, let me ask.

• 1:20:54Speaker 01

Well, it composed it and then you can.

• 1:20:55David Imel?

Let me ask, let me ask to do Gmail.

• 1:20:58Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:20:59David Imel?

Hey Siri, send an email with Gmail telling Adam Melina to pick me up milk after work.

• 1:21:06Andrew Manganelli?

Is obviously not as quick outside of its own app.

• 1:21:09David Imel?

  Yeah, that's true.

• 1:21:10Andrew Manganelli?

Didn't, well, while that's loading, wasn't there something that in order to not set off anyone's Siri's during the event? That they like broadcast?

• 1:21:19David Imel?

  Allegedly.

• 1:21:20Speaker 01

They cut certain frequencies that I guess were in the S and whatever other letter made it easy to identify the word Siri.

• 1:21:28David Imel?

I want to try it out.

• 1:21:29Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:21:30David Imel?

This beta software is really taking its time.

• 1:21:33Andrew Manganelli?

I think the Siri loading icon, which is like six dots spinning around, should have been the beach ball. It would have been.

• 1:21:42David Imel?

  Beep it out.

• 1:21:42Andrew Manganelli?

  Wow.

• 1:21:44David Imel?

  Adam at Melina dot com.

• 1:21:47David Imel?

It still opened Apple, Apple Mail.

• 1:21:50Andrew Manganelli?

  After all.

• 1:21:51David Imel?

Yeah. Yeah, it doesn't, yeah, you can't do it.

• 1:21:54Speaker 01

So, not right now. As an iPhone user, like many others, who use things like Google Calendar and not Apple Calendar? Who use things like Tic Tic and not Apple Reminders, et cetera, et cetera. I wonder how much of this stuff will work or be feasible to use.

• 1:22:11David Imel?

I'm now sad because yeah, that kind of, yeah, because. Google Maps, I use Google Maps, I use Gmail, I use Pocket Casts.

• 1:22:19Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:22:19David Imel?

I don't want to use only Apple apps.

• 1:22:21Speaker 01

There's lots of developers at that keynote that make alternatives to Apple's apps.

• 1:22:25David Imel?

  Yes.

• 1:22:25Speaker 05

But I would imagine they would still have to implement this, right? Like, not all of these features have been built into Gmail yet.

• 1:22:33Speaker 01

Yeah. True. Maybe there are updates to these apps coming that will support, and then this will work flawlessly.

• 1:22:38David Imel?

Technically, yeah. I think Apple basically said that the developers have to support. It wasn't App Clips, it was App Intents.

• 1:22:45Speaker 01

  App Intents, yeah.

• 1:22:46David Imel?

Which is a thing that they've had for a while now, but apparently Google has just not really supported them in a lot of Google apps. Because they have that little micro war, which is really annoying, even if they both pay each other like a billion dollars.

• 1:22:57Speaker 01

  And also.

• 1:22:57David Imel?

  Web server financing.

• 1:22:58Speaker 01

The other thing is like, how much of it is going to be on the device? Because I know like iMessage, it knows all my iMessages.

• 1:23:04David Imel?

  Okay.

• 1:23:04Speaker 01

But what about my Google Calendar? It's not, that's not all on my phone.

• 1:23:08David Imel?

It's kind of nebulous. They did go into detail about the different models and how much they access the cloud versus how much they'd happen on-device. They didn't say what apps can do on-device versus what can't. I know that there was a rumor going around that even in setting a timer would hit the private cloud compute server. But I asked someone at Apple about this, and they were like, "It'll get worked out." The things that can happen on the iPhone should just happen on the iPhone without having to leave. So there's five, there's five models. And this is a little bit confusing. It's not actually using Gemini allegedly. Apple says that they, they are licensing a 1 trillion, 1.2 trillion parameter Gemini model

• 1:23:53David Imel?

for about a billion a year as a teacher for the Apple Foundation models. It sounds like they're building their own foundation models by basically distilling Gemini answers.

• 1:24:03Speaker 01

  Siri got a tutor.

• 1:24:05David Imel?

  Kind of. It's a tutor.

• 1:24:06Speaker 01

  It's a private tutor.

• 1:24:07David Imel?

They're building their own models based on their own data sets, is what they said. But they're using Gemini to sort of like, teach their model how to be a model. I don't understand any of this.

• 1:24:16Speaker 01

If I was a car company, and I had a billion-dollar-a-year partnership with another car company.

• 1:24:22David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:23Speaker 01

And I was going to make my own car, but I was going to use that partnership to have the other car company teach me how to build a car.

• 1:24:30David Imel?

  Toyota.

• 1:24:31Speaker 01

You would end up with a car that looks and works and acts a lot like the one you're getting tutored from. But you'd be able to technically say.

• 1:24:40David Imel?

  Correct.

• 1:24:41Speaker 01

  That it's not a copy.

• 1:24:44David Imel?

They did say they use their own data sets, so that's something.

• 1:24:48Speaker 01

Yeah, we used our own tires and our own materials. I have no idea how to put them together.

• 1:24:52David Imel?

  Right.

• 1:24:52Speaker 01

But I have the blueprint of a Toyota Prius.

• 1:24:55David Imel?

  Yes.

• 1:24:55Speaker 01

And so when I put these things together, using the instructions from the Prius.

• 1:24:59David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:25:00Speaker 01

It's probably gonna end up looking like the Prius.

• 1:25:02David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:25:02Speaker 01

But it's not Toyota's tires, it's my tires.

• 1:25:05David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:25:05Speaker 01

So don't you call it a Toyota car.

• 1:25:07David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:25:08Speaker 01

  Okay?

• 1:25:08David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:25:09Speaker 01

That's how Craig kinda said it.

• 1:25:10David Imel?

  Sounds a lot like distillation.

• 1:25:11Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:25:12Andrew Manganelli?

Do you think for a billion a year, they just, now they only pay nineteen billion dollars to Apple to be the, uh?

• 1:25:17David Imel?

  The default.

• 1:25:18Andrew Manganelli?

  Search engine?

• 1:25:18David Imel?

Search engine, yeah. There's, there's a lot of back and forth financing going on.

• 1:25:22Andrew Manganelli?

  Discount on the receipt after.

• 1:25:23David Imel?

So there's five main models. There's two on-device models. There's AFM3 Core, which is Apple Foundation Model 3 Core. That happens for a very simple task. It's a three billion parameter model. That should be able to do things like setting a timer, et cetera. AFM3 Core Advanced, which is their most advanced on-device model, which has twenty billion parameters, but it kinda uses the like mixture of experts technique, where it only accesses between one to four billion parameters at a time to actually do stuff. So I believe that's the one that can only work on the like iPhone Pro and like the latest one that won't work on the regular iPhone 16 or iPhone 50 Pro, et cetera.

• 1:25:59Andrew Manganelli?

The one built from the ground up?

• 1:26:00David Imel?

Built for Apple Intelligence. You guys who bought that iPhone that was built for Apple Intelligence better get your ninety-five dollars now. Uh, and then there's three private cloud compute models. There's AFM3 Cloud, which is heavier cloud requests, which I assume is just stuff that the local model can handle. AFM3 Cloud Image, which is, sounds like a distillation or some form of version of Nano Banana that is Apple's version of Nano Banana. And then there's AFM3 Cloud Pro, um, which is their heaviest tool. They specifically called out that it uses Google Cloud infrastructure and it specifically called out that it uses Nvidia GPUs.

• 1:26:37Speaker 01

Is this the one you think that we'll go through and unsubscribe if you do that?

• 1:26:42David Imel?

  Like the agentic stuff?

• 1:26:43Speaker 05

Agentic stuff, yeah. Or not unsubscribe, change your passwords.

• 1:26:45David Imel?

  Change your passwords?

• 1:26:46Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:26:46David Imel?

  Oh. Maybe. I don't know.

• 1:26:49Speaker 05

  That seems like complex.

• 1:26:50David Imel?

Which ones they're gonna need Nvidia GPUs for, or if they just did that because there's some weird payment going on between Nvidia. I have no idea.

• 1:26:58Speaker 05

It feels weird because like the most, like that is a very privacy centered thing, which I would assume would go through their private stuff. But they're saying the heavier stuff like that would be through.

• 1:27:08David Imel?

There was some murkiness because they were saying all of the cloud models are through private cloud compute. But then some people were saying that the most hardcore one that uses Google Cloud infrastructure, they said it still has the benefits of private cloud compute. And they were very specific about that verbiage.

• 1:27:25Speaker 05

Yeah, because Google made their own version of it, basically.

• 1:27:27David Imel?

I get, that's probably what it is.

• 1:27:29Speaker 05

Are just being routed through Google servers.

• 1:27:31David Imel?

  Probably what it is.

• 1:27:32Speaker 05

But then they wouldn't say it's only on Apple servers. Like, I feel like Apple still wouldn't do that.

• 1:27:36David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:27:37Speaker 05

  I don't know. It's all very.

• 1:27:38David Imel?

It's all too nebulous and we don't want to make any big claims.

• 1:27:41Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:27:41David Imel?

Um, okay. I think that we should get down to what Siri actually does. Because there's three main pillars of what Google or what Apple is saying that Siri can actually do. So there's personal context, which is Siri can draw from all your personal apps, like messages, Google Photos, email and calendar to take actions for you. So you can say like, hey Siri, when's mom's flight landing? And because it had news you have a contact called mom and it can search through your messages. And she texted you when her flight is landing, it'll just tell you and that's helpful. There's on-screen awareness, which is Siri being able to analyze what's on your screen. It's basically circle search. Um, it can add things to your calendar. It can, you can ask it things about the things that are on your screen, et cetera.

• 1:28:23David Imel?

And then there's in-app actions, which is where Siri can perform and chain tasks together across tasks. So if you pull a photo into an email or you make a schedule based on your notes, that's where it's manipulating your apps for you.

• 1:28:36Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:28:38David Imel?

To do this, they now also have a dedicated Siri app.

• 1:28:41Speaker 01

Yeah, so all of your apps, all of your devices are gonna get this Siri app. And it's essentially like a memory bank for all the things that you've been asking Siri. So obviously, if you use any of these others, you've seen like the sidebar of all your previous queries. This isn't 100% of your queries, because you might just ask Siri what the weather is and doesn't want to save everything. But it's the things that are, you know, a little more context, you might want to come back to them. It's all your memories and it will sync across devices. So you can pick up where you left off from one request or one conversation to the next.

• 1:29:11David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:29:12Speaker 01

And this little hub where all your Siri stuff will be.

• 1:29:15David Imel?

And there's, there's an interesting interface on the iPhone specifically, but I'm sure you can do it on other computers as well. Where when you ask Siri a question, it will give you like a high level answer. But then you can pull down the little orb that kind of pops up and it'll, it'll just sort of like fluidly open the app.

• 1:29:32Andrew Manganelli?

  It'll splat open.

• 1:29:33David Imel?

Splato, yeah. It'll Gaussian splat. It doesn't feel like it's opening an app, but it's sort of just like this extension of itself, but it is the app.

• 1:29:42Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. Something strange about how black the background is of it.

• 1:29:46David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:29:46Andrew Manganelli?

  It's just like.

• 1:29:47David Imel?

  It's a very basic looking.

• 1:29:48Andrew Manganelli?

Cause it looks like a dynamic island pops open, but then it looks like the dynamic island just takes over your whole screen, except for a little bit of transparency at the bottom. And it's just black, white text.

• 1:29:58Speaker 01

I kind of liked it. So I had one thing that I really liked and one thing I really didn't like.

• 1:30:01David Imel?

  Okay.

• 1:30:01Speaker 01

The thing that I really liked was the way it seems to, it, it comes out of the dynamic island and then you can extend it. And it just seems to always act like an overlay. So I thought that that visual consistency of it always just happening on top of whatever you're doing makes sense. That's the same thing like Gemini will do. If you want to show it stuff on your screen, it always feels like it's on top. So I thought that visually that made a lot of sense. And that's the same on the Mac and the iPad. It always looks like a little window. The thing I didn't love, and it's subtle, but I think it makes a big difference for confidence using it is it doesn't transcribe what you're saying visually as you're talking. It just listens and shows a little orb and then when you're done talking. Boom, that's the text that you just inputted. And it's a little thing, but when it shows the text as I'm talking,

• 1:30:46Speaker 01

which like the rest of, like Google especially does this really well. That gives me a good sense of like, okay, it's understanding what I'm saying. And here's what it has so far. And here's the rest of what I want to say.

• 1:30:55David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:30:55Speaker 01

I wish it, I wish it did that.

• 1:30:56David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:30:57Andrew Manganelli?

Cause if you say something really long, but it doesn't get it right in the beginning. Now you've said the whole thing, but all of that could be wrong because of the first sentence. Where if you see it in live, you can be like, oh, no, no, no.

• 1:31:08Speaker 01

Yeah, I can start over. Yeah. So that, that's a little thing that I wish they did differently. Maybe they will. There's still time to update the software.

• 1:31:14David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:31:15Speaker 01

Uh, but yeah, it does seem like it's sort of over, always an overlay mode.

• 1:31:18David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:31:19Speaker 01

Happening on top of whatever you were just doing on your phone.

• 1:31:21David Imel?

Yeah. Have you messed with Siri at all and tried to get it to do edge cases and stuff yet?

• 1:31:25Speaker 01

No, I'm updating my, my Pro right now. That's what I'm going to be beta testing on. Cause I wanted it on my main device. So all of this for me is just from keynote and from hands on. I got at Apple Park.

• 1:31:35David Imel?

Yeah. I had a couple delightful experiences with Siri where I didn't expect it to work and it did.

• 1:31:40Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 1:31:41David Imel?

And I have, I had a couple where it just utterly failed.

• 1:31:43Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:31:44David Imel?

Um, as is classic, but one that was really surprising to me. So I was, uh, the way that these events work is we get, we get briefing schedules before the keynote. But the, but on the schedule, it'll be like 1pm to 2pm. It just says briefing because they want you to know like what to prepare for, but not like what specifically to prepare for, because you haven't seen the keynote yet. Then you go to the keynote and then you've learned everything. And then they give you another briefing schedule that tells you what the actual briefing is about.

• 1:32:13Speaker 01

Unmasks the names of the briefing.

• 1:32:14David Imel?

Yeah. So I had been referencing my briefing email like all day to make sure I was like making it to my briefings on time. And it got really annoying because I had to keep searching my email like a bunch of times. It was like, oh, this is an interesting Siri dynamic. So I was like, hey Siri, can you make a note of my WWDC briefing schedule? And it did it just in, it was like, here you go. And it, so it pulled it out of my email, but it pulled out the original schedule. So it just said briefing.

• 1:32:43Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:32:44David Imel?

So I said, hey, can you actually update that with the most recent one that gives more details? And then it did that.

• 1:32:49Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 1:32:50David Imel?

  And it was cool.

• 1:32:51Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:32:51David Imel?

And I was like, damn, that actually worked. Then I said, actually, can you add this to my email or to my calendar? And it added the first two to my calendar. And then I said, can you add the other three to my calendar? And it added two more to my calendar. I said, can you add the last one to my calendar? And then it finally added the last one. So there's weird chunks. And then also it only added it to my Apple calendar and I can't get it to my Google.

• 1:33:15Speaker 01

  That's what I expected.

• 1:33:16David Imel?

This is the problem. That's the main problem.

• 1:33:19Speaker 05

A part of me wants to just go all in on Apple's ecosystem.

• 1:33:23David Imel?

Oh, this is what it's designed to do.

• 1:33:25Speaker 01

  This is what they want.

• 1:33:27David Imel?

  We got him.

• 1:33:28Speaker 01

You're the last person that could even do this, man.

• 1:33:30Speaker 05

Listen, it's for science. I like jumping between things just to see.

• 1:33:33Speaker 01

Look, the golden gates of this walled garden are so shiny. If you are, if you are just entirely in Apple walls.

• 1:33:41David Imel?

  Everything works.

• 1:33:42Speaker 01

  Dude, it's awesome.

• 1:33:43Speaker 05

But right now I'm in Google's golden gate bridge.

• 1:33:46Speaker 01

And that's fine. And if you use Gemini, it's all going to be great. Looking your email, looking your Google Calendar, just always looking through all your stuff. But if you do, if you do the Apple thing, it will use Apple reminders. It will use Apple podcasts, it will use Apple Calendar, you use iMessage. You'll do all the stuff you want because that's all the services you use.

• 1:34:02David Imel?

  Right.

• 1:34:03Speaker 01

And that sounds pretty nice. But don't, don't, don't let yourself become that person. Because they haven't shrunk everything yet.

• 1:34:10David Imel?

Yeah, so we're, we're obviously still in the very early testing stages of Siri. I tried it again with another thing, like I was heading towards the airport, but I had some time for dinner. And I wanted a burrito, but I wanted to sit outside, but I wanted to be on a back patio. So I was like, this is awesome. So I just gave it a million different parameters of this query and it did find me some places. One of them was not Mexican, but most of them were. So I, you know.

• 1:34:35Speaker 01

This is what's going to happen.

• 1:34:36David Imel?

  We're getting there.

• 1:34:37Speaker 01

Everyone's going to have to start testing this stuff and using it. And it's either going to work all the time in ways that are surprising and great. Or, and this is what I think is more likely to happen, is people are going to try to push it to its limits and try to ask it to do more and more interesting things. Because remember, every time something new comes out, people try to break it.

• 1:34:54David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:34:54Speaker 01

All the way back to Bing, like people are just trying to break it and it's going to fail. And I wonder what it's going to look like slash act like slash say when it fails. How does it fail? Does it confidently get things wrong? Or does it just go, hey, I can't do that? That'll Be what we start seeing in videos and how we judge if it's actually capable or good or not.

• 1:35:11David Imel?

One thing, so I kind of, I ran into that because I asked it, what time does my flight board? Because I don't think that's necessarily something that it tells you in the email, but I was like, maybe you can find that information anyway. So I asked it and it went around forever. It was like, and eventually it came back with, I can't tell you the exact time, however, most flights board about 40 minutes before. So that's something.

• 1:35:35Speaker 01

  Unless you're Marcos.

• 1:35:36David Imel?

Or you're going internationally, which they want you to board an hour before. So I, I mean, at least it wasn't just, I can't help with that, which was the entire Siri experience before this.

• 1:35:46Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:35:46David Imel?

Hey, set a timer. I can't help with that. What did you say?

• 1:35:49Andrew Manganelli?

And now it's just even longer saying, I can't help with that.

• 1:35:52David Imel?

And it takes someone else for sure. Yeah. Really quickly, on the Mac, when you're using Siri, they built into Spotlight. So that's a cool interaction.

• 1:35:59Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:35:59David Imel?

  Paradigm. So.

• 1:36:00Speaker 01

  Raycast, be careful.

• 1:36:01David Imel?

  It's basically.

• 1:36:03Speaker 01

  Be careful.

• 1:36:03David Imel?

  Careful.

• 1:36:04Speaker 01

I haven't put up the third finger yet for the Sherlock, but it's close.

• 1:36:08David Imel?

So when you use your command space to use Spotlight, not only Spotlight way faster and way faster at finding files, because that indexing stuff we talked about earlier, but now if it detects that it's a question or an action that it can take, there's a do this with Siri button and it's cool. And then also in the screenshot tool, which is Command Shift four or Command Shift five, there's a Siri option now too, where you can basically circle the search on your screen and take action with it, add it to your calendar, do stuff like that. That's really cool. And then there's a dedicated Siri app on the, on the Mac as well. So.

• 1:36:37Speaker 01

And the floating orb on Vision Pro.

• 1:36:39David Imel?

  The floating orb.

• 1:36:40Speaker 01

  Adam's favorite.

• 1:36:40David Imel?

  Yeah, the Palantir orb.

• 1:36:42Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:36:43David Imel?

Yeah. So that's practically it. There's some weird things. It's not going to be Siri on the iPhone is not going to be available in the EU or China for now because of DMA stuff, but it is available on the Mac in the EU because their thing only covers smartphones and not computers.

• 1:37:00Speaker 01

  And it's English only, right?

• 1:37:01David Imel?

And it's English only for now as well. You can also now customize Siri's voice and change the expressiveness and speed.

• 1:37:11David Imel?

It's definitely not a leading class voice model. I'm going to be honest.

• 1:37:14Speaker 01

  Heard some samples.

• 1:37:16David Imel?

  It's not terrible.

• 1:37:17Speaker 01

  Sounds all right.

• 1:37:18David Imel?

  It sounds all right.

• 1:37:19Speaker 01

  Sounds all right.

• 1:37:20David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:37:20Speaker 01

I'll definitely be testing all this stuff, reviewing it, obviously when the time comes. Definitely get subscribed. If you guys have any questions, you're listening to this, you want to know, like if I try to do something, if it works or not, leave that down below. I want to know what you want to see if it's capable of or not.

• 1:37:34David Imel?

  Yes.

• 1:37:35Speaker 01

  Well.

• 1:37:35Andrew Manganelli?

  That's fun.

• 1:37:35Speaker 01

That was Dub Dub. What's the question? We did it. Oh, yeah. Trivia time.

• 1:37:46Speaker 01

I have question. So when Apple were demonstrating the features of the new Siri AI in Vision Pro, they gave us a demonstration of a user looking at a backpack they were thinking about buying for a trip, and they asked, does this backpack fit on my flight? Where was that flight going?

• 1:38:05David Imel?

  Damn, that's so specific.

• 1:38:07Andrew Manganelli?

Is it bad that I remembered the website they were using for the backpack?

• 1:38:09Speaker 01

I remember everything else about it.

• 1:38:10David Imel?

I remember what the backpack looks like.

• 1:38:12Speaker 01

And like the boots. I remember the boots, and they said, do the boots fit? And it said, yes, but just barely. I remember everything else.

• 1:38:16David Imel?

Those are the boots they had in real life, right?

• 1:38:18Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:38:18David Imel?

They're like, would they fit in the backpack?

• 1:38:19Speaker 01

They had real boots, and they asked if it would fit in the backpack.

• 1:38:21David Imel?

  That's interesting.

• 1:38:21Speaker 01

That was on the website. Where were they going?

• 1:38:22David Imel?

  Totally realistic scenario.

• 1:38:24Speaker 01

But where is the flight going?

• 1:38:27David Imel?

I have a random thought, but it's not probably right.

• 1:38:30Speaker 01

  Damn.

• 1:38:31David Imel?

  Yeah, I'll figure it out.

• 1:38:32Andrew Manganelli?

They'll fit, but it'll be tight.

• 1:38:35Speaker 01

Well, let's find out after the break.

Support for the show comes from Jira by Atlassian. So AI is only as useful as the context it has to work from, but when that context is scattered across tools like threads and DMs, that means your team and your AI agents end up flying kind of blind. That's the problem Jira solves. What's the goal tied to your project? What got decided last week in Slack? Atlassian's teamwork graph pulls all of these pieces together from Jira, Confluence, Slack, GitHub, and more, so nothing falls through the cracks. With Jira, you can actually share that context with the AI agents you already use, like Claude, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot, assign them work directly, or connect your agents through MCP. Spend less time digging through endless links and DMs, less time chasing down what got decided and by who, and more time actually shipping. Learn more at jira.com.

• 1:40:41Andrew Manganelli?

Welcome back. This is the dub dub episode, but we're going to talk about nostalgia.

• 1:40:44David Imel?

  Gaming.

• 1:40:44Andrew Manganelli?

Run really quick. I just want to say it. The Xbox 25th Anniversary Xbox Series X25 in transparent green.

• 1:40:56Andrew Manganelli?

They're calling it the Xbox Series X25. But the way I rewrote this like three times because I was so confused. The ROG Ally.

• 1:41:04David Imel?

You said Xbox like four times. Xbox X25, Xbox Series X.

• 1:41:09Andrew Manganelli?

She green, she transparent, she pretty.

• 1:41:13David Imel?

I feel like she's more translucent.

• 1:41:14Speaker 01

  This is nostalgia?

• 1:41:15Andrew Manganelli?

This is nostalgia. There was like an old Xbox.

• 1:41:18David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:41:19Andrew Manganelli?

  Limited.

• 1:41:19David Imel?

  Gotcha.

• 1:41:20Andrew Manganelli?

I really thought it was like a Master Chief Edition, but I might be wrong about that, but.

• 1:41:23Speaker 01

  I already did that.

• 1:41:25Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. That was a different one. Yeah.

• 1:41:27David Imel?

  It's fine.

• 1:41:28Andrew Manganelli?

  It's so good, though.

• 1:41:29David Imel?

  It looks nice.

• 1:41:29Andrew Manganelli?

  It's nostalgia.

• 1:41:30Speaker 01

It does look nice if I played it. As someone who has never seen the actual old Xbox that it's based on?

• 1:41:36Andrew Manganelli?

  This looks cool.

• 1:41:37David Imel?

  What?

• 1:41:37Andrew Manganelli?

  I like it. Yeah.

• 1:41:39David Imel?

  Ever seen?

• 1:41:39Andrew Manganelli?

I had to show them the green one this morning.

• 1:41:41Speaker 01

Old Xboxes, but they're all black.

• 1:41:42David Imel?

  He's never seen the clear.

• 1:41:44Speaker 01

I've never seen whatever this is referencing, but it looks, it looks cool.

• 1:41:48David Imel?

Okay, I have a quick rant about Ocarina of Time.

• 1:41:51Speaker 05

And then I have a quick rant, but go on.

• 1:41:53David Imel?

Why didn't I bring my Ocarina?

• 1:41:54Speaker 05

I didn't put this into doc, so it'll be a surprise for everyone.

• 1:41:56David Imel?

I should have brought my Ocarina and just played you Song of Storms.

• 1:41:59Speaker 05

I was debating asking you to bring it in, but I.

• 1:42:01David Imel?

Well, I flew directly from Dub Dub, but I'll play it next.

• 1:42:04Andrew Manganelli?

You didn't bring it to Dub Dub with you?

• 1:42:05David Imel?

Yeah, that'd be cool. I'll play it next week. Nintendo announced a remaster again. They have remastered Star Fox and Ocarina of Time like four times each.

• 1:42:14Speaker 05

  Oh, God.

• 1:42:16David Imel?

Ocarina of Time and Star, okay. There's a scene in the trailer. They just showed a trailer and they only showed what Link looked like and then like what the intro looked like, but they didn't show any gameplay. But Nintendo now is going for hyper realism, which is just the thing that Nintendo never did.

• 1:42:33Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 1:42:34David Imel?

And it's, in my opinion, a horrible idea because the amount of Zelda games that they've made and they just do different art styles and it's always really interesting and cool when they switch up the art style. But now, I don't know if you guys have ever seen those like Mario, but if it was made in Unreal Engine, like fan videos. And they look ridiculous. Like they've been making those for the last like 10 years and they look like, they can look kind of cool, but you can't have hyper realism and timelessness at the same time because those graphics will always become outdated. Whereas if you go with cartoon and cel shaded and something that never was made to look realistic anyway, it is timeless.

• 1:43:15David Imel?

Like, like Wind Waker, as Zelda Wind Waker, always gonna look amazing because it's cel shaded. Anyway, Ocarina of Time is my favorite game of all time and I just really feel like they massacred my boy.

• 1:43:24Andrew Manganelli?

This, this video of him in like pretty realistic kind of just looks like, do you remember Polly Pockets?

• 1:43:31David Imel?

  The link.

• 1:43:32Andrew Manganelli?

He looks like a Polly Pocket in this. It's like. Yeah.

• 1:43:36Speaker 01

I'll reserve judgment for when we actually see gameplay, but Link.

• 1:43:41Andrew Manganelli?

It is weird to just show.

• 1:43:43Speaker 01

Guys, you can, you can vote with your wallets. You don't have to keep buying the same game.

• 1:43:47David Imel?

  Disagree.

• 1:43:47Speaker 01

  You don't have to.

• 1:43:48Andrew Manganelli?

Do you have a free order for backyard baseball?

• 1:43:49Speaker 01

  No. No.

• 1:43:51David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:43:51Speaker 01

No, you, if you, look, backyard baseball is gonna be the same game as well, but it'll have online multiplayer, so that's new. If the only thing that's new is, cause you said remastered.

• 1:44:00David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:44:00Speaker 01

Is it the same game, just higher quality?

• 1:44:02David Imel?

But it's not, like, for the 3DS, they basically just put like a, like a, like a sharpening shader on the original game.

• 1:44:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:44:11David Imel?

But for this one, they're like making all new assets. I mean, it's supposed to be.

• 1:44:16Speaker 01

When you say new, you mean old but better looking.

• 1:44:19David Imel?

  But redone, like.

• 1:44:20Speaker 01

The same characters, but drawn again.

• 1:44:23David Imel?

  Differently.

• 1:44:24Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's my point.

• 1:44:25David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:44:26Speaker 01

  Just don't buy it.

• 1:44:27David Imel?

  I prob- I won't. I probably won't. I don't buy all these games. I didn't buy Star.

• 1:44:32Speaker 01

I guess my angle is if you do buy it, if you do buy it, this will be confirmation for the companies that it works and they'll do it again.

• 1:44:38David Imel?

Yeah, I know what you're saying.

• 1:44:39Andrew Manganelli?

It clearly works. They keep doing it.

• 1:44:40Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:44:41David Imel?

  Hollywood.

• 1:44:41Speaker 01

They're gonna keep doing it. Anyway, I just wanna say they massacred my boy and Nintendo needs to stop doing hyper realism.

• 1:44:47Speaker 05

And speaking of Nintendo and hyper realism, they somehow got the trailer for Kingdom Hearts IV. And I am so excited for this, for this game to come out. And there was already a trailer three years ago and then radio silence. And now there's another trailer. So we'll see how long it takes until the next trailer.

• 1:45:03Speaker 01

I've always been surprised that they can just be like Soul Calibur, but Mickey Mouse, and that's popular, but.

• 1:45:08Speaker 05

Exactly. And Donald Duck, don't forget Donald.

• 1:45:10Speaker 01

Go off King and Goofy. Love it.

• 1:45:12Speaker 05

  Sora was in Smash, so.

• 1:45:14Speaker 01

  That's true.

• 1:45:14Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. Maybe Lane and I can play this.

• 1:45:18Speaker 01

  Maybe.

• 1:45:18Speaker 05

Kingdom Hearts? You should play the first 13 games just so you really understand the story.

• 1:45:22Andrew Manganelli?

  13? You just said four.

• 1:45:23Speaker 01

Well, they have like 2.5 and then 2.5. They do have remastered.

• 1:45:28Andrew Manganelli?

  Last season.

• 1:45:29Speaker 01

  They have multiple remasters.

• 1:45:30Speaker 05

You should watch just a YouTube supercut on the story, cause there's like a bunch of story that happens only in like mobile games that were specifically released in Japan and that's like actually canon to the actual gameplay.

• 1:45:41Andrew Manganelli?

Does he ever find the door? That he's trying to unlock with that big key?

• 1:45:45Speaker 05

  No spoilers, cuz that is.

• 1:45:49David Imel?

He does carry that key around.

• 1:45:51Speaker 05

Great game, great story. It's insane, it's an insane story that everyone should know cuz it's amazing.

• 1:45:57David Imel?

  I heard it was amazing.

• 1:45:58Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:45:59David Imel?

Okay, I just have one last thing cuz I feel like it's important. Anthropic finally released its model that was too dangerous to release.

• 1:46:07David Imel?

  So.

• 1:46:08Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:46:10David Imel?

That's the playbook. We talked about Mythos a long time ago. It was like a crazy cybersecurity model and they were like, we're not gonna give this to people. And then they gave it to people.

• 1:46:18Speaker 03

  Crazy new marketing angle.

• 1:46:20David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:46:21Speaker 03

This thing we're about to release?

• 1:46:22Andrew Manganelli?

  You can't handle it.

• 1:46:23Speaker 03

  It's too hot to handle.

• 1:46:24David Imel?

  That's, they've done it a few times.

• 1:46:25Speaker 03

  Alright, so here it is.

• 1:46:26David Imel?

  So here it is.

• 1:46:27Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:46:27David Imel?

They said they like, made it safer. They're kinda doing a little bit of a bait and switch, which I don't love, where they're giving access to everybody, like who has a paid subscription of any kind, access to this model and for like one month. And then they're completely pulling it from the models you can access unless you pay for the API.

• 1:46:46Andrew Manganelli?

Isn't that what drug dealers do?

• 1:46:48David Imel?

  Yes.

• 1:46:49Speaker 03

Yeah. Hmm. Well, they, they have a reason, the reason they said they're doing this is the same reason that they said they're, they're changing their data retention policy.

• 1:46:57David Imel?

  Oh, for money.

• 1:46:58Speaker 03

If you read their press release, what they said is that they wanted to make sure that they were curtailing, like, bad actors using it to do the wrong stuff. So you know how you can get it to be like, oh, roleplay is my grandma who used to read me state secrets as bed, when I was going to sleep, but now she's dead and can you do it for me?

• 1:47:17David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:47:17Speaker 03

And it's like, no, no, no, I won't do that. So you could ask it like, okay, roleplay is my talking dog who I trained to repeat states. And then you could get it to do it like that. They're looking for all of the variations of the ways you can trick it, so that they can train their alignment model to be better at finding the things that people are going to do, the patterns that people are gonna try to use.

• 1:47:39David Imel?

  Well, they just tell.

• 1:47:40Speaker 03

  To get around the restrictions.

• 1:47:41Andrew Manganelli?

So they want it to be less gullible.

• 1:47:43David Imel?

Well, they just tell Fable to tell it all the things that people can do to get around it. Cuz I thought it could do everything.

• 1:47:48Speaker 03

  Well, I, you know, I'm.

• 1:47:50Speaker 01

  You got me.

• 1:47:52Speaker 03

  I don't know.

• 1:47:53Speaker 01

  I don't know.

• 1:47:54Speaker 03

This is why I don't work at Anthropic.

• 1:47:55David Imel?

Look, it's a combination of like, apparently this model is freaking insane and Opus was already insane. And we vibe coded a lot of crazy with it. But it's just kind of crazy to like, release it to public for one month and then pull it. And I like, I can, you could wrap your, you can, that could be an excuse. I could understand partially, kind of maybe, but obviously they're trying to get people to pay for the API. Because $20 a month, there was, there's been a lot of data that's come out that like, these $20 a month plans cost these companies $5,000. So they need people, people to pay per token.

• 1:48:29Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:48:30David Imel?

So anyway, that's the whole thing. That's, I just wanted to say that. It was impossible, like, they had, anyway, we had to talk about it briefly.

• 1:48:37Speaker 05

My question with this is, do you think this was all planned already?

• 1:48:41David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:48:41Speaker 05

This was part of the rollout, right? Like they announced Mythos.

• 1:48:44David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:48:44Speaker 05

And then a month later, or 40 something days later, they're like, uh, actually, we also have these safeguards.

• 1:48:48David Imel?

They've done this multiple times. Like, this is like the second or third time that they've been like, it's too dangerous to release this to the public. And then they released it to the public.

• 1:48:56Speaker 05

  Money, please.

• 1:48:57David Imel?

Money, please. Yeah, because the economy is going to crash pretty soon after the SpaceX IPO and the Anthropic IPO and the OpenAI IPO.

• 1:49:03Speaker 03

  They need the money now.

• 1:49:04David Imel?

Uh, by the way, on the same day as Dub Dub, uh, OpenAI filed two confidentially, um, IPO, which was not that confidential.

• 1:49:11Speaker 05

Yeah, do these companies know what confidential means? Because we keep hearing about it.

• 1:49:15Speaker 01

It's not going to be confidential if you just file, right? That's like.

• 1:49:18David Imel?

Yeah, but then they say that they did it.

• 1:49:19Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:49:20David Imel?

  Oh, yeah, I don't know.

• 1:49:22Speaker 05

  Is it confidentially or confidently?

• 1:49:25David Imel?

Both. I also think it's cool that Apple and ChatGPT are breaking up a little bit. They haven't officially broken up.

• 1:49:33Speaker 01

Yeah, that, that whole thing where you could like, you'd ask Siri a question and it would go, you mind if I ask ChatGPT this question? It doesn't necessarily need to do that anymore.

• 1:49:42David Imel?

  Yeah. So that's nice.

• 1:49:43Speaker 01

  So that's cool.

• 1:49:44David Imel?

Yeah. All right. I know that we're running low on time.

• 1:49:48Speaker 01

  It's time.

• 1:49:51David Imel?

  For trivia.

• 1:49:54Speaker 01

  That was nice.

• 1:49:55Speaker 05

  Trivia, dude.

• 1:49:57Speaker 01

  You have marker?

• 1:49:57Speaker 05

  So.

• 1:49:58Speaker 01

  I do.

• 1:49:58Speaker 05

  Points. Marquez, 26. Andrew, 25. David, 31.

• 1:50:05Speaker 01

  Hey.

• 1:50:06Speaker 05

First question. In the Siri AI section, a notification popped up that said, "The Golden Gate Bridge is painted in a color officially known as..." What?

• 1:50:17Speaker 01

  Sure did.

• 1:50:18David Imel?

  Tim Cook.

• 1:50:19Speaker 01

I can't believe I remember this. This is one of those...

• 1:50:22Speaker 05

If you get this right, I will be shocked.

• 1:50:24Speaker 01

This is maybe the most specific thing you could ask me that I remember reading the notification, and I'm pretty sure I haven't.

• 1:50:30Speaker 05

  That's crazy.

• 1:50:31Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:50:31Speaker 05

  We'll see.

• 1:50:31Andrew Manganelli?

  Reading the notification?

• 1:50:33Speaker 01

  Yeah, like the notification.

• 1:50:34Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, like...

• 1:50:34Speaker 01

  On the screen.

• 1:50:35Andrew Manganelli?

Well, because the other question's about a no... Oh, no, it's about a destination.

• 1:50:38Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:50:39Andrew Manganelli?

  Just kidding.

• 1:50:40Speaker 05

Is it the journey or the destination?

• 1:50:43Speaker 05

Flip them and read. What do you got?

• 1:50:46David Imel?

Oh, I think you're right, Marquez.

• 1:50:49Speaker 01

I remember it saying it was painted in this international orange, which is like this universal color of like, high contrast or whatever, that they use for the... The button on your Apple Watch Ultra.

• 1:51:00David Imel?

  Oh.

• 1:51:02Speaker 05

  Correct!

• 1:51:03Speaker 01

The Apple Watch Ultra button is the same color as the Golden Gate Bridge? It didn't age the same, but...

• 1:51:07Speaker 05

  That's true.

• 1:51:07Andrew Manganelli?

Well, I mean, that hasn't been around as long as the Golden Gate Bridge.

• 1:51:10Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 1:51:11Speaker 05

  Oh, like international.

• 1:51:11Andrew Manganelli?

I knew it was orange, so I wrote Nixon 5.

• 1:51:15Speaker 01

  Nice.

• 1:51:16Speaker 05

  Correct!

• 1:51:17Andrew Manganelli?

That'll be really funny, because there's a game tonight, and we don't know.

• 1:51:20Speaker 05

I won't give him the game. Uh, I won't give him the point. All right. David, what'd you say?

• 1:51:23David Imel?

  I wrote California poppy.

• 1:51:25Andrew Manganelli?

  Did you say correct?

• 1:51:26Speaker 05

Good guess. Yeah, I was saying correct. I was gonna give you the point, but then David yelled.

• 1:51:29David Imel?

Because he also agrees that it's Nixon 5.

• 1:51:31Speaker 05

  It's Nixon 4.

• 1:51:32Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, okay.

• 1:51:33Speaker 05

They already swept. We just live in an alternate reality.

• 1:51:35David Imel?

  Okay.

• 1:51:37Speaker 05

  All right, next question.

• 1:51:38David Imel?

  Nixon 4.

• 1:51:39Speaker 01

Where is the flight to? Okay, somewhere you go hiking, I guess.

• 1:51:43Speaker 05

  Wait, what's the question again?

• 1:51:43Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh.

• 1:51:44Speaker 03

When demonstrating new Siri AI functionality in Vision Pro, they showed us a person going on a trip somewhere and checking if their backpack would fit in the overhead bin of a flight. Where were they going?

• 1:51:59Speaker 05

  Cupertino.

• 1:52:02David Imel?

Little Bear. Big Bear Lake. Big Bear Lake, which we were wrong about.

• 1:52:11David Imel?

I'm okay with Golden Gate. I like- New Jersey. Golden Gate-

• 1:52:13Speaker 01

This is tough for me because I was just in an airport where I was reading lots of abbreviations for different airports, and that's in my head right now, and I can't think of anything else.

• 1:52:23David Imel?

  Atlanta.

• 1:52:24Speaker 01

I learned a lot of new airport city codes yesterday.

• 1:52:26Andrew Manganelli?

  Name all of them.

• 1:52:28David Imel?

Oh, you like airports? Alright, what do we got?

• 1:52:32Speaker 01

  I said Patagonia. For fun.

• 1:52:35David Imel?

  I wish.

• 1:52:36Andrew Manganelli?

  I said Rocky Mountain.

• 1:52:38Speaker 01

  I said Norway.

• 1:52:40Andrew Manganelli?

  It was international, right?

• 1:52:41Speaker 01

It was international. They were going to Iceland.

• 1:52:46Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, right. I did know that. I remember that, because yeah.

• 1:52:50David Imel?

That's the Vision Pro environment. Wait, why would he have to go on that trip if he just has the Vision Pro environment?

• 1:52:56Andrew Manganelli?

He wants to wear his boots in Vision Pro.

• 1:52:58David Imel?

He can already do that. He wears boots and just uses the Vision Pro and being in the environment.

• 1:53:02Andrew Manganelli?

It was an REI backpack or was it La Sportiva boots? Like, I'm remembering all this stupid stuff.

• 1:53:09Speaker 03

The first iteration of this question was gonna ask what the backpack was, but we thought it was more fun to ask where the-

• 1:53:16Andrew Manganelli?

  It was REI.

• 1:53:17Speaker 01

Well, that is it for this week's recap episode of Waveform. Obviously, a lot more to come. We'll be testing these things. Let us know, again, like I said, in the comments, if there's certain things you want us to test for future episodes and for the full reviews. But yeah, like I said, thanks for subbing. Catch you guys in our next regularly scheduled programming. And since you made it this far, Kool-Aid.

• 1:53:41Speaker 01

See you in the next one.

• 1:53:42David Imel?
