Apple is Paying for Apple Intelligence

Not a lot happened this week but we still somehow yapped for almost two hours about everything from Apple paying out for misleading customers about Apple Intelligence to whether it's pronounced "Read receipts" or "Read receipts." It's a good mix of news, games, and rants this week. Enjoy! Support for the show comes from Jira by Atlassian. AI is only as useful as the context it has to work from, but when that context is scattered across tools, threads, and DMs, that means your team and your AI agents end up flying blind. That's the problem that Jira solves. What's the goal tied to your project? What got decided last week in Slack? Atlassian's teamwork graph pulls all these pieces together, from Jira, Confluence, Slack, GitHub, and more, so nothing falls through the cracks. With Jira, you can actually share that context with the AI agents you already use, like Claude, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot, assign them work directly, or connect your agents through MCP. Spend less time digging through endless links and DMs, less time chasing down what got decided and by who, and more time actually shipping. Learn more at jira.com.

  That's J-I-R-A dot com.

• 1:23Speaker 01

  I don't have my laptop?

• 1:24Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:24Speaker 01

But how am I supposed to? But what if? But news.

• 1:27Speaker 02

What if the Fediverse news has?

• 1:29Speaker 01

  What if the Fediverse news?

• 1:35Speaker 01

Yo, what is up, people of the internet? Welcome back to another episode of the Waveform Podcast. We're your hosts. I'm Marquez.

• 1:40David Imel?

I'm David. And I'm David. Adam wrote that into the script, not me.

• 1:44Speaker 01

Nice. So we're back with some Apple news, some Google news, and a game that Adam wants to play with all of us. So this will be a fun, variety-packed episode.

• 1:54David Imel?

  Yes.

• 1:55Speaker 01

  But first.

• 1:56David Imel?

Yes, Marquez, you changed your whole desk setup.

• 1:58Speaker 01

  I did.

• 1:59David Imel?

We have to. We have to understand why.

• 2:01Speaker 01

All right, we were trying to unpack this a little bit. It was sort of a minor thing, but it ended up taking my whole day, setting all this stuff up yesterday. So for those who are wondering, yeah. I mentioned in the setup video of my desk that I would be getting rid of the Mac Pro soon. Apple literally discontinued the Mac Pro slightly after that video.

• 2:19David Imel?

  Officially.

• 2:20Speaker 01

Yeah, so they gave up on the Mac Pro. So so did I.

• 2:24David Imel?

  Nice.

• 2:24Speaker 01

Now, my question is... Do I want to become the laptop person? Or still have a separate distinct desktop and laptop? Which kind of feels to me like, do I want to have my phone for every photo? Or do I want to carry a separate camera?

• 2:39David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 2:39Speaker 01

Obviously, the separate camera is going to be better. But it would be convenient if I could take everything on my phone. This is the laptop dilemma. I think that a 16-inch M5 Max MacBook Pro.

• 2:49David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 2:50Speaker 01

Is powerful enough to do everything that I want out of a computer. Including editing, including all the plugins, including everything that we do. That takes a lot of render. But it's a 16-inch MacBook Pro. It's a big, heavier.

• 3:05David Imel?

  Big boy.

• 3:06Speaker 01

Yeah, but the 14-inch is clearly superior. I love the form factor. I would much rather carry the 14. And I know this because I've gone from a 16 to a 14. And I've tried to go back and back and forth. And I just, I'm.

• 3:17David Imel?

But do you ever edit on just the 14 without plugging into a display?

• 3:20Speaker 01

I think I've done it like three, only once with a main video. And like three or four times with the vertical video shorts.

• 3:26David Imel?

  Yeah, it's annoying, right?

• 3:27Speaker 01

It's slightly annoying, but it's not deal breaker annoying. What turned out to be more interesting is there's like a 15 to 20% difference in long-term thermal performance. With the bigger chassis of the 16, you're actually getting like the max that the chip has to offer.

• 3:44David Imel?

  Yeah, true.

• 3:44Speaker 01

The M5 Max in a 14-inch chassis is throttling a little earlier, isn't giving me quite the same performance. Is it that big of a deal? Probably not, but I'm curious if I can use the 16-inch M5 Max MacBook Pro.

• 3:58David Imel?

  16-inch?

• 3:59Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 3:59David Imel?

  Okay.

• 3:59Speaker 01

  As my everything computer.

• 4:01David Imel?

  Oh.

• 4:02Speaker 01

Uh, it will be the desktop plugged into those monitors, plugged into a whole bunch of stuff. A dock, a DAC, a whole bunch of, you know, we can talk about that.

• 4:10David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 4:10Speaker 01

And then when I need to go home or bring it somewhere, I can take it somewhere. I can take the edit somewhere. I can take whatever I'm doing and I don't have to have multiple computers.

• 4:16David Imel?

That's what's great about it. Everything's on one little PC.

• 4:19Speaker 01

So, the obvious other version of this is Mac Studio. I've said Studio is the new Pro. I think if this project, if this experiment fails me.

• 4:28David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 4:28Speaker 01

What I'll end up doing is I'll end up going back to having a Mac Studio on my desk. Whenever that M5 Ultra comes out, or M6 Ultra, whatever it is, that will be the desktop. And a 14-inch MacBook Pro will continue to be my laptop.

• 4:40David Imel?

Yeah, okay. How long are you going to test this experiment for?

• 4:43Speaker 01

So, I have the review unit M5 Max 16-inch MacBook Pro. It's maxed out, has 128 gigs of unified memory. I'm, I'm.

• 4:52Speaker 01

Using this until the new MacBook Pro, which we all know is gonna get redesigned, probably a 2-nanometer node and an OLED touchscreen and all this stuff. Whenever that new one comes out.

• 5:03David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 5:03Speaker 01

And when that new one comes out, that's when I'll make my decision. Am I gonna buy that laptop and continue the laptop life? Or am I going to become Mac Studio and MacBook Pro?

• 5:12David Imel?

If you get enough storage, I really, it's so great to just have everything on one computer.

• 5:17Speaker 01

Yeah. As of right now, it's like day one and a half. You know, it's the second day of this experiment. I am using a, now, there's a couple of things that I needed to make this setup work. So I have two Studio Display XDRs on my desk.

• 5:30David Imel?

  Okay.

• 5:31Speaker 01

They look fantastic. They are smaller than the Pro displays, but they're 120 Hz, they're brighter, they look better.

• 5:35David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 5:36Speaker 01

I'm willing to accept that. And I daisy chained them to each other, so it's great. I still have Thunderbolt ports to spare. And I have this TS5 Plus dock. Who makes this dock? TS5 Plus dock.

• 5:48David Imel?

  Cal-digit.

• 5:49Speaker 01

Cal-digit, baby. Yeah, this Cal-digit Thunderbolt 5 dock, uh, which lets me plug all of my accessories on my desk into the MacBook Pro with one cable.

• 5:57David Imel?

  That's nice.

• 5:58Speaker 01

So the dream, yeah, the dream is to have the one cable setup. I walk in with the laptop, put it down, plug in one cable, everything lights up. The mouse, the mechanical keyboard, the studio monitors, the DAC, both displays, my storage, everything is connected to it.

• 6:12David Imel?

  It's crazy, yeah.

• 6:13Speaker 01

  Unfortunately.

• 6:14David Imel?

  Uh-oh.

• 6:16Speaker 01

The Universal Audio DAC is really stubborn and refuses to work with the dock, even though it's plugged into Thunderbolt on the dock. I've tried it with the dock, I've tried it also with the display, plugging it straight into the display, it doesn't like it. It, it just, they've, did they even test this? It loves being plugged into the laptop directly.

• 6:34David Imel?

  Damn.

• 6:34Speaker 01

So it's a two cable setup for now.

• 6:36David Imel?

  DAC don't like the dock.

• 6:37Speaker 01

Yeah, DAC don't like the dock.

• 6:38David Imel?

  Damn.

• 6:39Speaker 04

Marquez, let me sit at your desk after we record and troubleshoot this for you.

• 6:42Speaker 01

Uh, please, it took me four hours to figure out. That it didn't like anything other than direct.

• 6:47Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 6:48Speaker 01

  Yeah. Truly annoying.

• 6:50David Imel?

Well, I have my own version of exactly what you're going through right now. And this is like round three of me wanting to talk about the iPhone Air.

• 6:59David Imel?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 7:00Speaker 01

  So...

• 7:01David Imel?

  Back baby.

• 7:01Speaker 01

  I saw your tweets, you're.

• 7:03David Imel?

  You did.

• 7:03Speaker 01

You're talking about how you tried to go back to the pro.

• 7:05David Imel?

I tried, I tried, oh my god. So I want to know what you're like, are you back on a pro? Or are you still on the air? You're still on the air?

• 7:13Speaker 01

Still on the air. Constantly frustrated by the camera.

• 7:15David Imel?

I mean, yeah, yeah, yeah. And we'll talk about that even more later, but you're probably, you know, a little more evened out because you're using a second Android phone all the time. That's much thicker. So you're kind of used to it.

• 7:26Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 7:27David Imel?

But I don't know what I was smoking when I was like, okay with phones being as thick as they were, you know?

• 7:32Speaker 01

  Not that bad.

• 7:33David Imel?

  This, I.

• 7:34Speaker 01

  Not that bad.

• 7:34David Imel?

It used, okay, I used to have the opposite take.

• 7:37Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 7:37David Imel?

  This, this phone radicalized me.

• 7:39Speaker 01

So what's your, now you're fully thin phone pilled.

• 7:42David Imel?

  Yeah, kinda. I kinda am.

• 7:45Speaker 01

You can only use this or the S25 Edge. Everything else will be devastating.

• 7:48David Imel?

Well, I think there'll be more options later. Yeah. And when the iPhone Fold comes out, I think, I think that will, because it's still thin when you open it, I think it'll be an okay compromise. It'll be shorter. We'll see. But I don't know. I, I tried to go back to the pro because I'm going to Europe today for two weeks and it's, it's so heavy and thick. I, I literally felt like I was using a Motorola Track Phone. That's what it felt like.

• 8:14Speaker 01

I get it. Like I, especially when you use them back to back.

• 8:18David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 8:18Speaker 01

You go from this super thin, especially the lightweight too. That's the thing people don't realize. When I see it on video, it looks, oh, it's just a little bit thicker or whatever. But holding it, it's so much lighter.

• 8:25David Imel?

  Uh huh.

• 8:26Speaker 01

Uh, and the two things that are frustrating about the air are the camera and the battery.

• 8:30David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 8:30Speaker 01

As far as, I mean, everything else is perfectly fine, as far as I can tell.

• 8:33David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 8:34Speaker 01

So I have had a couple of moments where I wish I had an ultrawide and I literally had to back down.

• 8:38David Imel?

  Totally.

• 8:38Speaker 01

Like I shot the desk photo the other day and I was just backing up away from my desk and it was annoying. But I can kind of make that work.

• 8:44David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 8:46Speaker 01

  But the battery.

• 8:47David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 8:48Speaker 01

How are you dealing with the iPhone?

• 8:49David Imel?

  It's not as bad as.

• 8:50Speaker 04

I know how he's doing. He grabbed the Ridge Power Bank for his trip today.

• 8:53David Imel?

I did. Yeah. I mean, it's not, it's not awful. I will say like, I've been home for a while, for longer than I'm usually home for. Like I've been home for like a month and I am one of those people that just constantly has all of their gadgets plugged in at every moment that I'm not using them, you know? I have a lot of battery anxiety all of the time.

• 9:15Speaker 01

That's okay with the air then.

• 9:16David Imel?

Yeah. So it's okay with the air. So I'm not completely sure how it's going to fare, you know, on a, on a travel.

• 9:22Speaker 04

  I'm sure.

• 9:24David Imel?

  What?

• 9:25Speaker 01

  I have a travel

• 9:25Speaker 04

I know exactly how this is gonna go.

• 9:27David Imel?

Oh, well, that's why I have battery banks, I guess. I don't know, I tried to switch back to the Pro and I'm just like, I can't do this, this is so annoying. Wow. It totally rattled me.

• 9:36Speaker 01

  Even as your only phone?

• 9:37David Imel?

Uh, yeah. However, okay, however, just like you, the main things that I miss are the camera, which by the way, I was wrong, I thought I you, I thought I never used the wide-angle camera. I

• 9:50Speaker 01

  The ultra wide?

• 9:51David Imel?

The ultra wide, I apparently do, not for photography, but for like

• 9:55Speaker 01

  Functionality.

• 9:56David Imel?

Functionality, yeah, like, like I, I remodeled my kitchen this weekend.

• 10:00Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 10:00David Imel?

Yeah, I know, it's crazy, I had to put a lot of work in. And I was trying to take a photo to like, show my friends that I remodeled it.

• 10:08Speaker 01

  Can't back

• 10:08David Imel?

I literally can't, I hit the wall. You can't show the whole kitchen in one picture, which is annoying, so I had to take a video and then it was still, yeah, it was bad, it was annoying. And then my, my 3D printed camera that I use all the time, uses the ultra wide camera to like crop in. And I can't do that either. So if they release an air with a wide, with an ultra wide camera, I'll be happy. The other thing, I found a solution to the no telephoto thing.

• 10:33Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 10:34David Imel?

Okay. So, there's, there's this company that sent me this camera attachment thing, like, a few months ago called Kyra Camera, that it's like, you MagSafe your camera, your phone to it, and it's just a sensor with a, um, I wish I had it with me, it's in my backpack. It's just a sensor with a micro 4/3 lens on it. And your phone slaps onto it and then your phone becomes the interface for it, and it directly, like, it uses Wi-Fi direct, the images go straight to your phone, you can shoot raw, you can shoot video.

• 11:04Speaker 04

Is it a micro 4/3 sensor?

• 11:05David Imel?

  It's a micro 4/3 sensor.

• 11:07Speaker 01

  That's nice.

• 11:07David Imel?

And, uh, you can put micro, and then you put micro 4/3 lenses on it, and because it's a micro 4/3 sensor, like, it, the crop factor is pretty high. So even if you're using like, I'm using a 25mm Leica lens and it's like a, it's like a 50 or something, yeah, like a 50.

• 11:25Speaker 04

  That sounds sick.

• 11:25David Imel?

  It's dope.

• 11:26Speaker 04

  What's it called?

• 11:27David Imel?

It's called Kyra Camera. It's really cool.

• 11:29Speaker 04

Right, so then what are you using as a lens if this is Leica lens?

• 11:32David Imel?

Aye. Yeah, I have a, I have a 25mm lens that's like a 50, so. I just carry that with me. It's not very big. It's like, it's like this thick. And my phone, your phone just like MagSafe straight to it. And so I'll just have that in my bag with me. And in the cases where I need to do telephoto, I just slap it on. You can shoot raw.

• 11:50Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 11:51David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 11:51Speaker 01

It's, it'll work. I know, I understand what you're saying. It's like, if I really wanna zoom and take a photo like that, then I have this kit.

• 11:57David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 11:58Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 11:58David Imel?

Yeah. And that was my main concern, cause I, cause I used this on the last trip that I did too, and not having a telephoto to shoot raw. Because I, when I'm traveling, I do a lot of like Halide or Moment Camera 2 with raw photos. And with this, it kinda sucks. So.

• 12:13Speaker 05

This is very anti-adding things to your phone for cameras.

• 12:18David Imel?

Yeah, well, not entirely. But I do have, I think there's a point of diminishing return, and it's pretty quick. Yeah, yeah. Alison Johnson put a really interesting piece out on The Verge a couple of weeks ago about the iPhone Air that says like, it was called like, "I finally understand the iPhone Air," and it was about how it's a modular phone. How like you basically, for the daily use, you just use it and it's thin and it's great. And then, you basically switch it out for whatever parts you need, whether it's the battery bank or like a camera attachment.

• 12:46Speaker 05

Motorola was a decade too early.

• 12:48David Imel?

Uh, yeah, of course. Yeah. Yeah. The Z.

• 12:51Speaker 01

  Yeah, the Z was insane.

• 12:52David Imel?

But the thing is, yeah, MagSafe is such a better attachment mechanism because like, things like the Moto Z that had the dedicated modules. Yeah, it's like, they promised to support it for like two years and then they did. And then all of those attachments were useless after that.

• 13:09Speaker 01

  That was brutal.

• 13:09David Imel?

Where as long as Apple does not get rid of MagSafe, which I saw some rumors that were like, they're thinking of killing it. And I was like, that's the stupidest thing ever and they will never do that.

• 13:16Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 13:17David Imel?

Uh, as long as MagSafe is, exists, all these attachments still work.

• 13:20Speaker 01

  Yeah. Sorry, iPhone 610.

• 13:21David Imel?

So my point is, I am totally radicalized. I don't, I didn't think this would ever happen to me.

• 13:27Speaker 05

I mean, this is kind of what we said when it came out, like, this is the right form factor. It's just too many compromises.

• 13:33Speaker 01

Yeah, this phone would be great if it had a silicon carbon battery. Because it would probably be totally fine. I have a travel story for you in a second.

• 13:41David Imel?

  Okay.

• 13:41Speaker 01

But, and then, yeah, and add an extra camera, and it's right there. It's back to being very usable and justifiable.

• 13:48David Imel?

  Okay, what's your story?

• 13:49Speaker 01

I recently went to, how much can I say? I went to a foreign country in Europe somewhere.

• 13:54David Imel?

  Okay.

• 13:55Speaker 01

For a video shoot that you guys will learn about later. And I forgot to bring a power adapter. I totally forgot to.

• 14:02David Imel?

Every time. Adam and I were just talking about that.

• 14:04Speaker 01

I brought everything else I need. I had the MacBook Pro.

• 14:06David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 14:06Speaker 01

I had the backpack full of stuff. I had, uh, my chargers all ready to go, and I just forgot my, like, adapter for their plugs.

• 14:12David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 14:13Speaker 01

So it's a three-day trip. And I realized this as I landed. I'm like, you know what? I don't, I'm not gonna buy an adapter. I'm gonna survive with the batteries that I have.

• 14:21Speaker 05

  Crazy person.

• 14:22Speaker 01

Which is a MacBook Pro, an Oppo Find X9 Ultra, a OnePlus 15, and an iPhone Air. And an iPad Pro. And I was, I got off the plane not knowing, so I wasn't really conserving battery while I was watching stuff on the iPad, so the iPad was, like, kinda cooked. So I got there, and it was like, I need to use my MacBook Pro as a power bank to charge my phones overnight, every single day.

• 14:46David Imel?

  Beautiful.

• 14:46Speaker 01

After the first night of charging up the, um, the OnePlus to full, for some reason, the MacBook Pro is basically dead. So now I have two days and two phones. And, uh, yeah, the iPhone Air did not last. It lasted, like, I think I got to low-power mode at 20%, like, by the end of the first day.

• 15:07David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 15:07Speaker 01

And I was still at, like, 60-something with the Oppo and the OnePlus. So having them side by side and actively trying to conserve battery on both, and just watching the air just slowly go away, it was really, it was pretty eye-opening.

• 15:21David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 15:21Speaker 01

  So I, yeah.

• 15:23David Imel?

What I usually do when I forget a, uh, power bank, which is like, or forget a travel adapter, which is a lot, is a lot of the, like, hostels and stuff that I stay in, they'll have, like, one USB-A or USB-C port, like, in your bed area.

• 15:36Speaker 01

I was looking, yeah, I was looking for that port.

• 15:38David Imel?

I always, I turn my MacBook Pro into, like, a multi-port daisy chained battery pack. Where I plug in the MacBook, and then everything else is just, like, octopus off of it.

• 15:49Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 15:49David Imel?

Um, which is probably what's gonna happen in when I go to Europe today. So yeah, anyway, uh, yeah, I'm radicalized. So I really hope that they don't kill this line like they did with the mini. The mini I loved immediately. And the, the problem with the air is that it's a good phone. You just have to spend like three weeks with it to understand that. Which is a, which is a problem for Apple.

• 16:13Speaker 01

Well, Apple always does two of everything, at least typically with the phones.

• 16:17David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 16:17Speaker 01

So we're gonna have, or pretty sure we're gonna have an air two.

• 16:20David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 16:21Speaker 01

Then we'll see how that goes.

• 16:23David Imel?

Yeah. All right. Did they even test this? We do this every week. Did you guys bring, uh, did you bring some?

• 16:29Speaker 04

  I have one.

• 16:30David Imel?

  Let's go, Ellis.

• 16:31Speaker 04

But first, actually two, but first, because the first but first is.

• 16:35Speaker 01

Video viewers already know where this is going.

• 16:38Speaker 04

No, because I, uh, unfortunately embarrassed myself in the last episode. Because my last, did they even test this was about how to do the find on page on Safari.

• 16:50David Imel?

Yeah. Got a lot of comments.

• 16:52Speaker 04

Got a lot of comments. Uh, there's a much easier way.

• 16:54David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 16:55Speaker 04

To find on page that I did not know about.

• 16:57David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 16:57Speaker 04

So I would just like to thank waveform viewers for being dedicated Safari users.

• 17:07Speaker 04

Thank you waveform audience. Okay. Now. Adam, would you mind getting the lights, please?

• 17:15Speaker 01

I feel like I need to narrate this for audio listeners.

• 17:18Speaker 04

  Ellis what?

• 17:19Speaker 01

Ellis is grinning from ear to ear, wearing a 76ers shirt and a 76ers hat.

• 17:25Speaker 04

And you know why I'm grinning ear to ear, Marquez?

• 17:27Speaker 01

  Why is that?

• 17:28Speaker 04

Because this weekend, the Philadelphia 76ers, for the first time since the 1980s, have defeated the Boston Celtics in an NBA playoff series. Meaning we are moving on to round two to face our other rivals, the New York Knickerbockers, in a, what will hopefully be another seven game amazing basketball series. Kelly Oubre, thank you for your contributions. Joel Embiid is back and healthy. Nothing can go wrong for us.

• 17:59David Imel?

Are they really called the Knickerbockers?

• 18:00Speaker 01

Quick knocks some wood. Yeah, the Knicks are the knickerbockers.

• 18:03David Imel?

  What does that even mean?

• 18:05Speaker 01

  Underwear.

• 18:06Speaker 04

Something. I've looked it up so many times and then just forget every time.

• 18:11Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 18:11David Imel?

It commonly refers to 19th century baggy knee length trousers.

• 18:16Speaker 01

The 76ers really close to a meme.

• 18:19Speaker 04

Dude, it's, this team is just so much fun. It's just so much fun.

• 18:25Speaker 01

  I'm glad you're having fun.

• 18:26Speaker 04

  So many.

• 18:26Speaker 01

Game seven sounds stressful, but it sounds like you're having a lot of fun.

• 18:28Speaker 04

Dude, I have not come closer to [BLEEP] my pants as an adult than watching that game seven. And just, I, I love, I, my, my heart pours out for everyone on this team, especially Kelly Oubre and Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey and yeah.

• 18:43Speaker 01

You said it was the most watched game seven in NBA playoff history?

• 18:47Speaker 04

That's what we were seeing online, but we were also talking about how game seven of the finals.

• 18:53Speaker 01

  I was just like, wow.

• 18:54Speaker 04

  Steph Curry finals.

• 18:55Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's an incredible stat.

• 18:57Speaker 04

It's just like, the six, you know, I keep trying to explain this to Alex and Adam, man. It's like, being a Sixers fan is not about reveling in your endless wins, okay? It's about, we literally have more than you, but it's about reveling in the journey and, and the storylines and the personalities and watching Joel Embiid grow up before our eyes and overcome so much. And watching Kelly Oubre turn into just like a absolute dog in the paint. And, and watching VJ Edgecombe blossom into an eventual All-Star and having already watched Tyrese Maxey blossom into an All-Star. And so that win, that game meant so much to us.

• 19:38Speaker 01

  I found the NBA.com post.

• 19:40Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 19:40Speaker 01

Most watched first round in 33 years, most watched first round game seven ever.

• 19:46Speaker 04

Everyone got to watch the Sixers play beautiful Sixers basketball and I just feel so blessed to be alive right now. Oh, and uh.

• 19:55Speaker 05

I just want to make a quick point that he's talking about the game seven because game one versus the Knicks was a not a great game if you're a Sixers fan.

• 20:02Speaker 01

  Oh yeah, that already happened.

• 20:03Speaker 04

Yeah, that was really bad. And so my, my, did they even test this is the Sixers drop coverage because did not work. And those baskets, those Knicks baskets were fallen. So yeah, did they even test this Sixers defense? But it's all good, man, because we just did test it. We're coming back tonight. Gonna tie up the series.

• 20:23Speaker 01

It's funny, I used to be a Clippers fan back when Chris Paul and Lob City era Clippers were like a thing. And this was the feeling that I was hoping I would feel for like five years straight. I never, never got to taste it.

• 20:33Speaker 04

If it makes you feel any better, this is the feeling I've been hoping to feel for five years straight, and we're finally getting it.

• 20:38Speaker 01

  That's awesome.

• 20:40Speaker 05

  All right.

• 20:40Speaker 01

  All right.

• 20:41Speaker 05

  So onto tech.

• 20:42Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 20:42Speaker 05

My, did they even test this is shocker, Google task. So.

• 20:47Speaker 01

  What?

• 20:48Speaker 05

  In Google tasks.

• 20:49Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 20:49Speaker 05

When you add things to your upcoming, I guess, reminders.

• 20:54Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 20:54Speaker 05

There's on web at least, I feel like this might also be in the app. I'm not sure. But on web, it shows like all of your lists that you've made.

• 21:02Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 21:03Speaker 05

One of them, the very first one, even though you can move it around, but the one that's first by default is upcoming.

• 21:09Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 21:10Speaker 05

That one will just show every reminder that you have for the upcoming future period. Like you can't sort it for only show me the upcoming week. You can't sort it for only show me the upcoming month. It's just everything. Like right now, I have a reminder for Friday, December 11th to remind me that there's a parade that always passes by my apartment. The Guadalupe parade, I think. But it's at like 10pm every December 11th where a bunch of people go down my block with a parade. So like, I set a reminder this past year. I don't need to see that right now. We are in.

• 21:45Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 21:45Speaker 05

May. Why is this still showing?

• 21:48Speaker 01

Why do you have that in tasks, though? Why isn't that not just in your calendar?

• 21:51Speaker 05

  That's a great question.

• 21:52Speaker 01

I feel like that's the reason they exist separately.

• 21:55Speaker 05

Like, okay, so let's say I did have a task on Friday 11th, though.

• 21:59Speaker 01

  Like this Friday?

• 22:00Speaker 05

No, like the 11th of December. Like, I don't know, I had to re-sign something on December 12th.

• 22:06Speaker 01

I would also put that in my calendar, probably.

• 22:08Speaker 05

  Not a reminder?

• 22:09Speaker 01

  I put tasks.

• 22:10Speaker 05

  Yeah, that's a task.

• 22:11Speaker 01

I guess so. If it's like buy someone's birthday present, like a week before their birthday.

• 22:16Speaker 05

Like, I would see that right now.

• 22:18Speaker 04

  Which is like, why?

• 22:19David Imel?

Yeah, I, yeah, okay, that makes sense.

• 22:22Speaker 01

It's just like, why you're not, have you tried Tic Tic?

• 22:25Speaker 04

I have tried Tic Tic and I used Tic Tic for a long time. I was trying to minimize subscriptions, so I stopped using it.

• 22:34David Imel?

  Are they paid?

• 22:35Speaker 04

  The pro features, yeah.

• 22:37David Imel?

  Okay, got it.

• 22:38Speaker 01

Do you need the pro version for?

• 22:40Speaker 04

I don't know. I mean, at some point too, like, is it better to use Google Things? Like, I don't even know if that's the case. Maybe it is better to just pay a developer, but...

• 22:48David Imel?

I'm off of the, like, it's better to use Google's version because there's so many examples of it not being better to use Google's version that I have abandoned that philosophy.

• 22:57Speaker 04

  That's a very good point.

• 22:58David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 22:58Speaker 01

  Interesting.

• 23:00David Imel?

Okay. In summary, no, they did not test this.

• 23:03Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 23:04David Imel?

I have one that I'm, well, it's less of the, did they even test this and more of why does this exist? Does that work? Why does, yeah.

• 23:12Speaker 04

  Sure, I'll take it.

• 23:13David Imel?

Okay, so like, a couple of weeks ago, X launched X Chat, which is a separate app. Which is just, yeah, which is a separate app on your phone, which is just the DM portion of X. And it looks exactly like the DM tab in X. And it's just the DMs. And then there's a little button in the top right and you click it, it just opens X.

• 23:37Speaker 04

  Yeah, so...

• 23:37David Imel?

I don't know why they have two separate apps for this. And I thought Elon was all obsessed with making the everything app and then he just started separating them. And I'm very confused.

• 23:46Speaker 04

  I think that counts.

• 23:47David Imel?

That counts? Did they even think about this? How about that?

• 23:50Speaker 04

Was there any, like, press statement as to like, why they did this?

• 23:54David Imel?

  No. No, just launched.

• 23:57Speaker 04

  Also, like...

• 23:57David Imel?

  Casually.

• 23:58Speaker 04

You, after, ever since the, the, the blue check apocalypse on X, Twitter, on Twitter. Messaging people is like, almost impossible because most accounts you can't even DM unless you pay.

• 24:11David Imel?

Is that, is that how that works?

• 24:12Speaker 04

I forget how the system works, but I feel like anytime I want to send a DM, it's like, you got money?

• 24:18David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 24:18Speaker 04

So now there's an app to tell me, like, you got money?

• 24:21David Imel?

Yeah. Someone hit me up the other day, they're like, hey, your handle is, at David M. L. is available, because I've been trying to get that since like, 2012 or whatever. And, uh, but you have to have X Premium Plus, which costs forty dollars a month in order to request dead hand, like, unused handles. And I was like...

• 24:38Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 24:38David Imel?

  I hate this.

• 24:39Speaker 04

  Question, is X Chat encrypted?

• 24:42David Imel?

  Uh...

• 24:43Speaker 04

Is the, is the Twitter DMs?

• 24:46Speaker 05

  Regular Twitter DMs encrypted?

• 24:47David Imel?

I think they're exactly the same.

• 24:48Speaker 01

It is because they're the same.

• 24:49Speaker 05

Oh, well, and I have no answer.

• 24:51David Imel?

I really don't know why this exists.

• 24:53Speaker 05

Yeah, I was trying to think of something.

• 24:54David Imel?

Now, to be fair, to be fair, I have been wanting an Instagram just DMs app forever, which they were working on for a long time.

• 25:02Speaker 01

  Separately?

• 25:03David Imel?

  Separately.

• 25:04Speaker 05

Isn't that just messages, like Facebook messages or Messenger?

• 25:07David Imel?

Yeah, but Instagram, they unbundled them, remember?

• 25:10Speaker 05

  Yeah, so you mean WhatsApp?

• 25:12David Imel?

No, that, that, no, no, the amount of people.

• 25:15Speaker 01

  Google chat?

• 25:15David Imel?

There's a lot of people that I just DM with through Instagram that I like daily, but I have, I have all my social media blocked throughout the day on my accounts because I don't want to, you know.

• 25:25Speaker 01

Wait, this is the exact same thing?

• 25:27David Imel?

  What?

• 25:28Speaker 01

  That's what Twitter is doing.

• 25:29David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 25:30Speaker 01

You want to be able to DM the people you DM on Instagram without also having to go through the rest of Instagram.

• 25:35David Imel?

Correct. I just, I barely use Twitter, which is what Twitter. It's what Twitter did, and I'm happy about that. I barely, I mean, if it was Instagram. Because I barely use Twitter. I would love this for Instagram, but it just, it's just confusing. Let's move on to some news this week.

• 25:52Speaker 04

I just want to say the, the selling point, and this is according to Elon himself.

• 25:56David Imel?

  Okay.

• 25:57Speaker 04

Um, quote, "XChat is the only secure encrypted messaging app."

• 26:03David Imel?

That's not true at all. What?

• 26:05Speaker 05

It is if you just say it.

• 26:07Speaker 01

That's the end of the statement?

• 26:08David Imel?

  That's not even remotely true.

• 26:09Speaker 01

That's like the first half of a correct statement, but then it's just wrong.

• 26:12David Imel?

Has he ever heard of Signal before? All right, let's get to the actual news stories of the week. So I gotta take a vote from you guys. We got two Apple stories and two Google stories. Which one do you want to get to first?

• 26:24Speaker 01

Hmm, I like the Android ones or the Google ones.

• 26:27David Imel?

  The Google ones?

• 26:28Speaker 01

  Yeah, they're interesting.

• 26:29David Imel?

Let's talk about the Google ones.

• 26:30Speaker 01

  My curiosity has peaked.

• 26:31David Imel?

Yes. So this is going to be a pretty major event. Next week, we're getting the Android show, which if you remember, is a pre-IO Android experience where they.

• 26:43David Imel?

Yes, yes, it's very hype. Because I O.

• 26:46Speaker 01

  It's super real.

• 26:47David Imel?

I O used to include Android, but now it's kind of just all Gemini.

• 26:50Speaker 01

Yeah, now it's just for the stockholders and the people that care about the products.

• 26:54David Imel?

Well, the Gemini features are interesting, but yeah. But it's gonna be a big one. Samir Samat has tweeted a video with a little teaser for the Android show.

• 27:03Speaker 01

  His caption.

• 27:04David Imel?

He says that it's the biggest set of Android updates ever.

• 27:07Speaker 01

And he, he, he punctuated it. He said, biggest Android updates ever. Period after every word.

• 27:15David Imel?

  Which is a big deal.

• 27:16Speaker 01

  That's a lot of hype.

• 27:18David Imel?

  It's a lot of hype.

• 27:18Speaker 01

  Coming from a Googler, wow.

• 27:20David Imel?

Yeah, and in the little teaser video, the little Andy Android robot pulls a light switch. And when he turns off the lights, he's glowing with these kind of like neon, blue and pink cotton candy colors. However, and Adam noted this because he.

• 27:32Speaker 01

  Liquid glass, scaring me.

• 27:33David Imel?

No, no, no, it's not, don't. Okay, by the way.

• 27:35Speaker 01

  Scaring me, Google.

• 27:36David Imel?

Everyone is quote tweeting this, being like, Apple's doing liquid glass.

• 27:39Speaker 01

  He replied to it.

• 27:40David Imel?

  Yeah, I know.

• 27:41Speaker 01

  Yeah, he said, we're not.

• 27:42David Imel?

Him and Mashal have had to go, like, have a campaign going to reply to every single person. Be like, no, we are not.

• 27:48Speaker 01

  Did they even test this?

• 27:50David Imel?

Did they even think about this?

• 27:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 27:51David Imel?

Uh, but if you look very closely near the Andy Android robot's neck, it's clearly got the pixel glow like RGB. Y bar.

• 28:01Speaker 01

If you want to see it clearly, it's now the profile picture of Android on Twitter.

• 28:06David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 28:06Speaker 01

  So.

• 28:07David Imel?

  Yes.

• 28:07Speaker 01

  It's hype.

• 28:08David Imel?

  Yes.

• 28:08Speaker 01

  It's glowing.

• 28:09David Imel?

Pretty hype. Um, it would be really crazy and I would be very happy if they did a lot of settings changeups like they did with Ice Cream Sandwich, where everything was kind of neon and weird. And just this morning, it leaked that the new design language that they're using is called luminous design.

• 28:26Speaker 01

Don't they cha- okay, they changed this so much, alright.

• 28:29David Imel?

Well, I think that they'll still have Material U expressive as the like.

• 28:32Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 28:33David Imel?

You know, material interface, but I think that luminous design is going to be like the Gemini, kind of like intelligent features are gonna have the luminous stuff.

• 28:42Speaker 01

  That's my guess.

• 28:43David Imel?

So it's being teased as biggest Android updates ever, but it's not the biggest Android updates ever. It's just the Gemini parts.

• 28:51Speaker 01

I don't think it's just the Gemini parts. I think that they're probably adding a ton of Android features.

• 28:56David Imel?

Which is cool, because I have no idea what they would add.

• 28:58Speaker 01

Very curious how they're gonna live up to this amount of hype, because this is...

• 29:01David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 29:01Speaker 05

Yeah, Material 3 Expressive is new, right? That just came out like three years ago.

• 29:05David Imel?

Yeah, from like two, three years ago.

• 29:07Speaker 05

So for them to have, for them to be introducing a brand new design.

• 29:13David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 29:13Speaker 05

I would imagine that's just for like the glowing around your screen when you hold down the button to access Gemini, which is already a thing. So like, what else would they use this for?

• 29:21David Imel?

Well, they just pushed a big update for the Gemini app on Android, where it looks a lot more neon like this, like yesterday. So if you have it, that'd be, that'd be interesting to see. Yeah, so I don't know. They say biggest Android updates ever. I'm really curious what that means. It could be so many things. Are there any Android features that you have been like wishing for?

• 29:43Speaker 01

Not specifically, honestly. I mean, the hardware is what's been fun to play with in Android land. And then I use Android, Android Android, mostly the same way I did five years ago.

• 29:52David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 29:52Speaker 01

Which is also most of the same way I did five years before that.

• 29:54David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 29:54Speaker 01

So yeah, Gemini a little bit more, a little circle to search stuff a little bit more. But it's genuinely mostly the same. I'm pretty happy with it.

• 30:01Speaker 05

Yeah, one I'm really excited for is the, I forget what it's called, but the Chrome desktop when you plug it in, Pixel Desktop or whatever.

• 30:08David Imel?

  Yeah, making that better.

• 30:09Speaker 05

Making it better to like be a Dex competitor for real.

• 30:12David Imel?

  For sure.

• 30:13Speaker 05

Um, because right now it's like in developer beta or something like that, and it's fine. You can use it, but it's not like, I wouldn't say it's good.

• 30:19David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 30:19Speaker 05

It's just like fun to play around with.

• 30:20David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 30:21Speaker 05

If they can make that good, that would be awesome.

• 30:23David Imel?

Yeah. Well, thankfully, the event is next Tuesday. So we'll be able to talk about it on the show next week. I won't, because I won't be here. But you guys will be able to talk about it on the show next week. And it's at 10 a.m. Pacific time, so you guys should all chime in. Maybe we could get that live threads thing going.

• 30:39Speaker 05

I would love that, but I don't know if that's out yet. It's rolling out slowly.

• 30:43David Imel?

Hmm. The other, uh, Google news is that Google Home Gemini can now do multiple and more complicated requests at once, which is a big, a big update. It's Home 3.1. It improves Gemini's ability to interpret and act on requests like complex tasks or multiple tasks in one query.

• 31:01Speaker 01

  I need an example.

• 31:02David Imel?

I think you should be able to say like, turn on the lights in the bedroom and also open up the shades in the living room.

• 31:08Speaker 05

So you could like chain. Things together.

• 31:10David Imel?

You can chain things together, um, also more complex stuff. Uh, it will also make Gemini better at handling recurring all day events and allow you to move around upcoming events with your voice, which is interesting. That's helpful.

• 31:23Speaker 05

All I want is better search in Gmail. Like just use this for Gmail.

• 31:28David Imel?

Yeah, how is it so bad?

• 31:29Speaker 05

Why are they doing all this? Just give me good search in Gmail.

• 31:32David Imel?

I don't know. It's still so bad. It is crazy. Uh, they're also launching in beta, a way to manage your smart home from a computer and you can search your camera history with natural language. You can create routines from your desktop. So that's nice.

• 31:46Speaker 05

You just said routines and that made me think of another thing that I hope they introduce into Android, which is like Samsung's routines and like, uh, Apple shortcuts, like something like that.

• 31:56David Imel?

Yeah, goo, they have some already, right?

• 31:59Speaker 05

What's it called? Oh, automations. You're right.

• 32:02David Imel?

  Yeah, in Gemini's.

• 32:03Speaker 05

  But are they good?

• 32:05David Imel?

In Google Home. I think they're pretty good. Well, I, some of mine are broken, so I haven't actually updated them in a while. But I, I do know they have that. Let's see.

• 32:13Speaker 05

  Like if they can.

• 32:13David Imel?

  Yeah, automation.

• 32:14Speaker 05

If they flesh that out, that would also be pretty sick.

• 32:17David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 32:17Speaker 05

Yeah. Cause there's not many things that I want Android to take from iOS specifically, but shortcuts is one of them.

• 32:24David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 32:24Speaker 05

And I know you can use Macroid and Tasker and all those things, but those are so insanely powerful. I don't need all that.

• 32:29David Imel?

Yeah. Yeah, I don't know. It's kind of exciting for them to hype it so much when I don't even know what I want them to add. It's like, I feel like we're going to be surprised because none of these features have leaked so far, which is kind of surprising.

• 32:41Speaker 05

Yeah, I feel like Android, I mean, I don't know. I guess both operating systems are pretty mature at this point for what I would, like what I want.

• 32:49David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 32:50Speaker 05

So there's not really much you can do besides a design change that would make me be like, whoa, it's such a huge change up from what we already had.

• 32:57David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 32:58Speaker 05

Like that's why with iOS Liquid Glass was like such a thing because it changed how everything looked. I wouldn't say it like changed much of the functionality in a drastic way.

• 33:06David Imel?

  No.

• 33:07Speaker 05

So I'm curious why they're hyping this up so much. Like what are they gonna introduce?

• 33:10David Imel?

Yeah, it's interesting that they're kind of showcasing the Pixel Glow stuff, considering that's fairly necessi- like you kind of have to have hardware to make that work. And they're not going to show off, well, they're pro- I mean, maybe they will. Maybe they'll show off the Pixel 11 and the Pixel Book or whatever. I doubt it, but like it would be cool. It would be cool.

• 33:28Speaker 05

  That would be crazy.

• 33:29David Imel?

Yeah, if they randomly drop the Pixel.

• 33:31Speaker 05

I mean, they could do the Pixel Lap. Laptop, right?

• 33:33David Imel?

Yeah, they could, or at least they could hype it.

• 33:36Speaker 05

You think they would drop that with the phones in August, September, October, whenever the Pixel event?

• 33:40David Imel?

I think they would do it separately. Really? I think, yeah, from the, separate from the phones. Really? Let the phones shine, but if you're gonna do a laptop. I don't know. A new laptop, you could do that. I mean, when they did the Pixel, but go it was at the same time as the phones, when the Pixel four came out. Sure, I guess Google does know this think logically.

• 33:57David Imel?

That's fair. Yeah, but it's a, I mean, it's an, I mean, this is supposed to be their Android Chrome OS merger laptop, so it could be. And like, why do you need the phones to have their moment to shine when they're just Gemini machines? You know, they're not that different. You know what I mean? Just throw them at you.

• 34:14Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 34:14David Imel?

That's true. Just throw them at you. Separate from my own. Yeah.

• 34:17Speaker 05

I went to the Google store in Williamsburg this past weekend.

• 34:19David Imel?

  Oh, yeah.

• 34:20Speaker 05

  And.

• 34:20David Imel?

You were close to me, you didn't tell me?

• 34:22Speaker 05

  Is Williamsburg close to you?

• 34:23David Imel?

  Yes.

• 34:24Speaker 05

  Oh, sorry.

• 34:24David Imel?

Right below me, I can walk there in 20 minutes.

• 34:27Speaker 05

Oh, well, sorry, I'll, I'll tell you next time.

• 34:28David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 34:29Speaker 05

But I was in the store and my mom was with me because I was going to get a, what was it, like a Titan security key for, for my sister?

• 34:36David Imel?

  Oh, yeah.

• 34:37Speaker 05

That's what she ended up picking up.

• 34:37David Imel?

You can get them at the Google store?

• 34:39Speaker 05

  Yeah, they sell them there.

• 34:39David Imel?

  Oh, wow.

• 34:40Speaker 05

Um, cool. But she was walking around, she's like, this is cozy. This is not like the Apple store at all. And I was like, I bet that was very intentional.

• 34:48David Imel?

I think it is a lot like the Apple store. I mean, it's more, it's more cozy because they have more fibers and stuff.

• 34:53Speaker 05

I think more fibers, a lot of wood.

• 34:55David Imel?

We have natural wood grain. The Apple store.

• 34:57Speaker 05

Apple is like metal and wood and like.

• 34:59David Imel?

  Yeah, glass.

• 34:59Speaker 05

  Glass.

• 35:00David Imel?

Yeah, that's true. White walls. Yeah. They only have a couple of stores, so they got to make them hype. Yeah. All right, uh, okay, speaking of Apple news.

• 35:10David Imel?

Apple is going to allow you to choose which AI model to use for different Apple intelligence features, which is kinda, it's kinda interesting. Very of the moment. Yes.

• 35:19Speaker 05

I was asking, can one of you explain this to me? Because I do not understand what this means at all.

• 35:23David Imel?

Yeah, okay, so this is according to Bloomberg. In iOS 27, you're going to be able to use an extensions feature, which lets you pick different AI models for different features of Apple intelligence. Like Siri, writing tools, image playground, other stuff. So it's become clear over the last year or two years that these different AI models that people. Subscribe to whether it's Claude or ChatGPT or Gemini are better at certain things, right? And people subscribe to different ones. And at this point, I think Apple has given up trying to make their own competitive model, right? Like, it would cost so much money and the the race is moving so fast and the updates are coming so fast that Apple would have to basically create an entire additional company within Apple just to keep up with all these other companies.

• 36:08David Imel?

So it makes more sense to just be the compute company that like runs the models.

• 36:13Speaker 05

Yeah, they are the hardware that everyone will run the models on.

• 36:16David Imel?

  Right.

• 36:16Speaker 05

So once all these models, yeah, obviously there's the cloud models. And then once these local models get good enough that everyone's running them locally on all their machines, they're the ones here with the machines.

• 36:27David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 36:27Speaker 05

And that we run them on there.

• 36:28David Imel?

Totally. Yeah. So like the iPhone is probably going to use Gemini Nano for like Siri things, right? But for all the other features like Image Playground, which literally nobody uses, ChatGPT currently has, you know, it's competitive between ChatGPT and Gemini for who has the best image model.

• 36:46Speaker 05

  Sure.

• 36:46David Imel?

But the fact that most people are probably only subscribed to one of these AI models at a time, right? So if you are subscribed to Gemini versus ChatGPT, you want to plug in all of your Gemini stuff to your iPhone so that works natively and Apple's happy to let you do that. It's more interesting that you can choose which model for which feature, which I guess makes sense because, you know, some models like Claude is better at reasoning. So if there was some sort of reasoning feature in the iPhone, I guess, that's better for reasoning, you would plug in your Claude model. It is kind of like a if you know, you know, kind of thing, like the average iPhone user probably isn't going to be plugging in a bunch of different models, but, you know.

• 37:30Speaker 05

Yeah, I really want to see what the UI is for this because

• 37:33David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 37:33Speaker 05

I feel like if I'm trying to do, I don't know, like Siri, I want to have Siri be accessing Gemini.

• 37:39David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 37:40Speaker 05

But then for image generation, ChatGPT. And then for circle to search, oh, let's do Gemini again. And then like all those different things, shortcut automations, let me use Claude for that.

• 37:51David Imel?

Yeah. What is that UI even gonna like even saying it out loud? I'm kind of confused.

• 37:56Speaker 01

Yeah, maybe it's just it's a defaults page in the settings. Like the way you can choose your search engine default now by going into settings and switching it from Google to one of the other options on the list.

• 38:06David Imel?

  Generation default.

• 38:07Speaker 01

There's like a Apple Intelligence section in the settings, which there is. And you go into all the different features and can drop down a list and change the defaults to all of them.

• 38:16David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 38:17Speaker 01

Maybe there is a default for all of them that lines up. Maybe it's Gemini for everything, but then you can go go on the list and change.

• 38:21David Imel?

Yeah. My question becomes like, how much is this going to impact your usage limits for all of these? All these apps, because if you accidentally like hit all your usage limits on Claude just by using your iPhone. And then you can't really use it on your computer. That's pretty annoying.

• 38:36Speaker 01

Yeah. Well, and will it be like an extension that plugs into your account with Claude? Or is it just like a fully isolated instance of like asking Claude for something, but has no context from your account?

• 38:47David Imel?

I imagine it will be your account.

• 38:50Speaker 01

Because right now, when you ask for something that Siri can't handle and it kicks out to ChatGPT, that's not with the context of your account.

• 38:56David Imel?

You can sign into your account.

• 38:58Speaker 01

  You can sign in. Okay.

• 38:59David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 38:59Speaker 01

But when it wasn't signed in, it was just however many queries you want. It didn't matter.

• 39:04David Imel?

  The free version, basically.

• 39:05Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 39:06David Imel?

Yeah. But there's still limits to the free version. So it's kind of, and I don't think Apple's going to want to pay that bill for a bunch of regular people. But it it would be interesting if you couldn't use all of the features of your iPhone unless you had an AI subscription plan from a different company.

• 39:22Speaker 05

  Yeah. Interesting or apocalyptic?

• 39:25David Imel?

  I don't know about apocalyptic.

• 39:26Speaker 01

Definitely driving a lot of usage of this stuff.

• 39:29David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 39:30Speaker 01

Yeah, for sure. If there's anything Siri can't handle, we'll just kick it out to any of these companies.

• 39:34David Imel?

Yeah. I mean, maybe it's possible that these companies have are going to have deals with Apple. Because they want people to use their product more, right? So if Anthropic wants more people to adopt Claude. And they say, oh, you can try Claude on that. You can use Claude on the iPhone for free. And then it motivates people to use Claude on their desktop.

• 39:53Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 39:54David Imel?

  Then that's good for Anthropic.

• 39:55Speaker 01

  That's good for them.

• 39:56David Imel?

  It's possible.

• 39:56Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 39:57Speaker 04

Kind of telephony Apple intelligence story from last week.

• 39:59David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 40:00Speaker 04

I decided to fire up, what's it called, Genmoji.

• 40:04David Imel?

I love Genmoji. Do I use it all the time?

• 40:05Speaker 04

  Really? Because I-

• 40:07David Imel?

  I'm its biggest fan.

• 40:08Speaker 04

I cannot get anything useful out of it. And to be fair, the story I'm about to tell is mostly user error.

• 40:15Speaker 04

But what happened is I was like, I needed a cowboy boot emoji.

• 40:19David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 40:20Speaker 04

  And so I-

• 40:20David Imel?

  I made one.

• 40:21Speaker 04

I searched. I was just moving really fast. I just searched boot and it gave me a rain boot. And I was like, oh, I didn't get specific enough. Silly me. So I put in cowboy boot and it put a cowboy hat on the rain boot.

• 40:34David Imel?

  Wow.

• 40:37Speaker 05

  That's so good.

• 40:37Speaker 01

  It should know.

• 40:39Speaker 04

  And I was like-

• 40:39David Imel?

  That's incredible.

• 40:40Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 40:41David Imel?

That's so good. Last Apple story and then we'll take it to trivia in a break. Yeah. Apple is going to need to pay iPhone owners $250 million for not delivering the AI Siri that they promised everybody.

• 40:53Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 40:53Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 40:54Speaker 05

  Give me my $12.

• 40:56David Imel?

  Yes. Less than, well-

• 40:57Speaker 05

$12 is way too much. You're getting like a nickel.

• 40:59David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 41:00Speaker 01

  I think it's actually-

• 41:01David Imel?

  It actually is more.

• 41:02Speaker 01

  $20.

• 41:02David Imel?

  It's 25. It's between 25 and 95, depending on the circumstances.

• 41:05Speaker 05

  Every iPhone user gets $20?

• 41:08David Imel?

No, it's the people. Okay. Let me, let me tell this. Okay. There's a class testing lawsuit that alleges that Apple misled customers by Apple intelligence and has gotten Apple to pay between $25 and $95 to each person that purchased an iPhone 15 Pro or any iPhone 16 between June 10th, 2024 and March 29th, 2025.

• 41:29David Imel?

The lawsuit is alleging that Apple gave people a clear and reasonable consumer expectation that Apple intelligence features would be available on these phones, while they ended up being significantly limited or sometimes entirely absent.

• 41:42Speaker 05

  Correct.

• 41:43David Imel?

This is a story from The Verge and they did speak, they did reach out to Apple and Apple spokesperson Marnie Goldberg told them that the company decided to settle the matter so they could get back to focusing on building innovative products for their users. So it sounds like they just knew they weren't going to win this. So they were just like, just take the money. Just make it go away.

• 42:02Speaker 04

I also think Apple just doesn't financially want to get involved in like the circular AI. We're developing a model, buying chips from people who give us money to buy their chips. It's just, you know.

• 42:14David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 42:15Speaker 05

We know that you, the Wayfarer audience, misses Andrew so much. We don't miss him at all, but you guys miss him. But if you want to see what he's up to while he's on paternity leave, he was recently on a disc golf tournament.

• 42:27David Imel?

What did you do, paternity leave?

• 42:29Speaker 05

Because he said he's on paternity leave and then these videos are dropping and he's playing disc golf.

• 42:34David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 42:35Speaker 05

But yeah, there's a creators tournament that's being posted weekly, I think, online now. You guys can go check him out and comment saying you're coming from waveform so that we could

• 42:44David Imel?

  Oh, yeah.

• 42:45Speaker 05

like take over their comments. A comment takeover, basically, is what I'm proposing.

• 42:48David Imel?

Okay, if Andrew wins, what happens?

• 42:51Speaker 05

  And if he loses?

• 42:52David Imel?

Ooh, that's a good one. What do we have him do? Oh, yeah, we gotta make him do something.

• 42:56Speaker 05

Okay, if he wins, he has to come back and host a solo pod.

• 43:01Speaker 01

A director's cut narrating every shot he took.

• 43:04Speaker 05

Yes. Okay, that's a good one, too.

• 43:07Speaker 04

You're gonna, you're gonna make him Jalen Brown.

• 43:10Speaker 01

He would do it. He would do it. We'll go watch his disc golf tournament. That'll be pretty fun.

• 43:16David Imel?

And now, the moment you've all been waiting for, that I'm also waiting for.

• 43:22Speaker 05

  Tribute.

• 43:26Speaker 05

All right, first question. The Chromebook Pixel came out in 2013.

• 43:32Speaker 05

What was the size of the screen closest without going over?

• 43:36David Imel?

  Oh, man.

• 43:37Speaker 01

Oh, man, it was a touchscreen.

• 43:38Speaker 05

  To the nearest decimal.

• 43:39Speaker 01

It was a little bit tall. It was like 3,200 by 2,800.

• 43:42David Imel?

The embezzled would be thick, though.

• 43:43Speaker 01

  The embezzled would be thick.

• 43:44David Imel?

  They were thick as [bleep].

• 43:45Speaker 01

What was the size? Why do I know all these things but not the size of the screen?

• 43:49David Imel?

Damn. You just know the vibe, you know?

• 43:50Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 43:51David Imel?

I still have one. I tripped over it yesterday.

• 43:54Speaker 05

  So it's on the floor?

• 43:55David Imel?

I'm not even joking. I tripped over it.

• 43:57Speaker 05

I've deduced that it's on the floor.

• 43:59David Imel?

  Yeah, it's on the floor.

• 44:00Speaker 05

David always keeps his laptops on the floor. This is the only time I see David's laptop on the desk when we're in this room.

• 44:05David Imel?

Yeah, it's usually on the floor. It's always slightly ajar, you know, on the floor.

• 44:09Speaker 01

It was exactly $1,000 or no?

• 44:11David Imel?

  I think so. I think it's $1,999.

• 44:13Speaker 01

Everyone, everyone loved that it was $1,000?

• 44:15David Imel?

If you went to I O, you got like $400 off.

• 44:18Speaker 01

Oh, right, yeah. People love that because they would sell it.

• 44:22Speaker 01

Because they would get it for cheap.

• 44:23David Imel?

I didn't sell mine. I bought it with hard-earned cash.

• 44:26Speaker 01

I also did that and then I reviewed it. Damn.

• 44:28David Imel?

I like that computer. It was cool because it was like, it was good hardware. It was really, really thin and uh...

• 44:34Speaker 01

  Kind of an oxymoron.

• 44:36David Imel?

  Good hardware and then?

• 44:37Speaker 01

No, the Chromebook Pixel's existence of a, "Oh, you only really need to do Chrome because it's a Chromebook and you kind of don't need to do much. Okay, here's a cheap Chrome computer."

• 44:46David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 44:47Speaker 01

"Oh, oh, you want a premium laptop that does way more?"

• 44:50David Imel?

  Well, it doesn't. It's just a Chromebook.

• 44:52Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 44:53David Imel?

But you can spend a thousand.

• 44:53Speaker 01

You don't really need it to do way more, but you just want the hardware to be nice, you know?

• 44:57David Imel?

And then like a nice chip and a bunch of RAM and a whole storage.

• 45:00Speaker 01

Using Chrome, you want to be able to, mm, feel that hardware. It feels good.

• 45:03David Imel?

When you minimize the desktop and open up Chrome again.

• 45:06Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's right.

• 45:08David Imel?

You want it to be nice and smooth.

• 45:09Speaker 01

That's absolutely, you're absolutely right, Mark.

• 45:10David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 45:11Speaker 01

All right, well, we'll think about that. Answers at the end, like usual. We'll be right back.

• 48:33David Imel?

Back with the six pack. We are here on the waveform podcast playing another game because there's no fucking news this week. Not enough.

• 48:41Speaker 05

We just spent 50 minutes talking about news.

• 48:43David Imel?

Yeah, four stories, four stories and seven years ago, there was way more freaking news than this week.

• 48:49Speaker 05

You know, you guys are yappers.

• 48:50David Imel?

  It means tomorrow. Yeah.

• 48:51Speaker 02

  It's all gonna happen.

• 48:52David Imel?

  Oh, it's all gonna happen.

• 48:53Speaker 04

You know what state that was originally set in, right?

• 48:56David Imel?

  New Jersey.

• 48:57Speaker 04

Pennsylvania, which is the same city as Philadelphia, which is where the 76ers play.

• 49:02Speaker 05

Why'd you just throw something at Mariah?

• 49:04Speaker 04

It was, I threw something. It just kind of went across.

• 49:06David Imel?

The eraser. Well, because there's no news.

• 49:08Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 49:08Speaker 04

I actually am gonna need that back. We're gonna.

• 49:11David Imel?

We are gonna play a game. Adam said it's the newlyweds game, but contrary to popular belief, I'm not married to Marquez.

• 49:18Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 49:19David Imel?

  May happen later.

• 49:20Speaker 05

  Yeah. TBD.

• 49:21David Imel?

  We'll see.

• 49:21Speaker 05

This is the same game we played earlier this year. Andrew adapted it for tech and in his honor, because he is on paternity leave, air quotes. We are bringing it back to play it again. So if you don't remember how to play, I will be asking you guys a question. And you need to answer what the answer would be for your partner. So teams this week is gonna be David and Marquez versus Ellis and Mariah. Again, there's a plus five confidence boost.

• 49:50Speaker 04

What does that, what does that mean?

• 49:52Speaker 05

If you really know the answer.

• 49:55Speaker 02

I saw how poorly this one was. I was.

• 49:58Speaker 05

If you really know the answer that your partner is gonna put down, you can confidence boost and you'll get plus five points.

• 50:04David Imel?

Remember when did the iPhone one and we both knew that we were thinking like iPhone 4S or something at the same time?

• 50:09Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 50:09David Imel?

We were locked in last time. We were locked. It was good.

• 50:11Speaker 05

Actually, you know what? Maybe I'll do plus three. Plus five is like a.

• 50:13David Imel?

Plus five is kind of great.

• 50:14Speaker 05

It's a lot. I'll do plus three. Plus three. Okay. Are we ready?

• 50:18David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 50:18Speaker 05

  Anyone have any questions?

• 50:19Speaker 04

  I don't think so.

• 50:20David Imel?

Do you want to explain how it works for the listeners?

• 50:22Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 50:23Speaker 05

  I thought I just did.

• 50:24David Imel?

  Listen up. No, you didn't.

• 50:26Speaker 04

  Here's how it works.

• 50:27David Imel?

You just said there's a confidence boost.

• 50:28Speaker 04

  Al, Andrew's, Jesus.

• 50:32David Imel?

  Andrew's on paternity leave.

• 50:34Speaker 04

Here's how it works. Adam is gonna ask us a question, like the whole group. Two of us are gonna write and answer that question. Then our teammates are gonna guess what we wrote on our boards.

• 50:44Speaker 05

  Thank you, Ellis.

• 50:45Speaker 04

  Thank you.

• 50:45David Imel?

  Okay.

• 50:46Speaker 05

I don't know what to do when you're not here by my side. I'm all alone over here. Such a big table and just little old me.

• 50:51David Imel?

  It'll warm me up.

• 50:52Speaker 05

  First question.

• 50:54David Imel?

  All right.

• 50:54Speaker 05

Uh, who do I want to give this to? Let's see. Who gets first? Do you guys want to? You guys decide. How confident are you in your partnership?

• 51:02Speaker 01

  Winner chooses.

• 51:04Speaker 05

Well, you guys are on the same team.

• 51:06Speaker 04

  That's okay.

• 51:07Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 51:08Speaker 01

Well, it has to win or one or the other has to get the question, right?

• 51:10Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 51:11Speaker 01

  So.

• 51:12David Imel?

  On three or after three?

• 51:13Speaker 01

  Rock, paper, scissors, shoot.

• 51:15David Imel?

  Shoot, okay.

• 51:15Speaker 01

Yeah, ready? Rock, paper, scissors, shoot. Rock, paper, scissors, shoot.

• 51:20David Imel?

  Ah.

• 51:20Speaker 01

I choose you to answer first. So y'all two are going first.

• 51:26Speaker 05

Okay, first question. What app would you say?

• 51:32Speaker 01

Wait, so I'm guessing what Marquez.

• 51:33Speaker 04

Ryan and I are so close.

• 51:35Speaker 01

  I'm answering.

• 51:36Speaker 04

How often do we talk about?

• 51:37Speaker 01

And you guess what I would.

• 51:38Speaker 02

  So often.

• 51:39Speaker 04

Yeah, we're like, you know, when we text, it's it's all app talk.

• 51:42Speaker 05

Yeah. I figured your whole Slack messages is just about apps. Okay, what app would your partner say is their guilty pleasure?

• 51:51Speaker 01

Oh, so you're saying what app your guilty pleasure is?

• 51:53David Imel?

  Okay, okay.

• 51:54Speaker 01

  I'm wondering if you.

• 51:55Speaker 02

What do I even have on my phone?

• 51:58Speaker 01

I wonder if you know this.

• 51:59Speaker 04

Wait, so I'm writing what my guilty pleasure is and then Mariah is guessing.

• 52:02Speaker 05

  Yes, exactly.

• 52:05Speaker 04

So, Mariah, you're guessing my dirty pleasure app.

• 52:08Speaker 01

  Guilty.

• 52:08Speaker 05

  Not dirty.

• 52:11Speaker 05

  Definitely not dirty pleasure.

• 52:13Speaker 04

Can I go back to my corner, please? I don't want to be here at the table. Guys, the lights are too bright.

• 52:21David Imel?

  Waveform after dark.

• 52:26Speaker 01

Waveform after dark. Wow, it's deeper than I thought it was.

• 52:31Speaker 02

  I want to go home.

• 52:33Speaker 05

  All right, all right.

• 52:34David Imel?

Let's see if Marquez can remember.

• 52:35Speaker 05

  What do you got?

• 52:37Speaker 01

Um, I had two things come to mind. I think yours is either some obscure camera app. Or it's literally Instagram.

• 52:45Speaker 04

David would feel guilty for using a camera app.

• 52:48Speaker 01

Like his eighth camera app or something. But I also, earlier on this episode, we were talking about how you wish Instagram DMs were separate from Instagram. So you didn't have to use Instagram so much. So I think it's Instagram.

• 52:59David Imel?

  Do I tell him now?

• 53:01Speaker 05

  Sure.

• 53:01David Imel?

Okay, I don't get I don't get pleasure from Instagram, I'll tell you that.

• 53:06Speaker 04

We're so far away from guilt, I'm sorry, guys.

• 53:08David Imel?

I will say it's Pokemon TCG Pocket. It's the only game I have on my phone.

• 53:14Speaker 05

  But that's a good game.

• 53:15David Imel?

  Besides Bellatro.

• 53:16Speaker 05

Why is that your guilty pleasure?

• 53:17David Imel?

Because I don't, you know, I have guilt.

• 53:20Speaker 05

You spend no money on it.

• 53:22David Imel?

Yeah, but I still have guilt for playing games.

• 53:24Speaker 05

  Why?

• 53:25David Imel?

  Because we live in America.

• 53:27Speaker 05

We should work that out in therapy.

• 53:28Speaker 01

Have your fun, play some games.

• 53:29Speaker 02

You're not still doing Bellatro, right?

• 53:30David Imel?

  I sometimes, on the subway.

• 53:32Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 53:32David Imel?

  It's good for the subway.

• 53:33Speaker 05

  Bellatro's offline?

• 53:35Speaker 01

You ever play chess on your phone?

• 53:35Speaker 05

Yeah, oh, maybe I'll pick it up.

• 53:37David Imel?

  Chess?

• 53:38Speaker 05

Yeah. Oh, we'll get to that, Marquez.

• 53:41David Imel?

  Okay, okay.

• 53:42Speaker 05

  Ellis?

• 53:43David Imel?

  Ellis. Okay.

• 53:44Speaker 02

I think, I'm putting all my eggs in one basket. I don't know much about Ellis, but what I know, in our four years of, uh...

• 53:53Speaker 04

  Working together?

• 53:54Speaker 02

I'm gonna put all my money on the McDonald's app.

• 53:58Speaker 04

Oh, that would have been good.

• 53:59Speaker 05

  Damn, that is good.

• 54:00Speaker 04

The app I feel guiltiest about using because of everything that goes down on it is Twitter.

• 54:08David Imel?

  Oh, yeah.

• 54:09Speaker 02

  That's valid.

• 54:10David Imel?

  That's valid.

• 54:10Speaker 01

The Sixers' Twitter unbelievably plentiful and...

• 54:14Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 54:14David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 54:14Speaker 04

The Sixers' Twitter has been a really safe place for me lately, but the rest of that app is

• 54:19David Imel?

  Yeah, it's...

• 54:19Speaker 04

  An ocean of chaos.

• 54:20David Imel?

That's the hard thing about Twitter is it's still, the people there are still the funniest people and the memes are still the funniest, but the, the ratio of that to just like racism and sexism and nudity is crazy.

• 54:31Speaker 02

We hate it. Sorry, Ellis, I let you down.

• 54:33Speaker 04

  It's okay.

• 54:35Speaker 05

Maybe you guys couldn't make it up with this one. All right. If your partner could get rid of one overhyped piece of tech from the last decade, what would it be?

• 54:43Speaker 02

  Oh, gosh.

• 54:44Speaker 05

Just snap your fingers and it's gone.

• 54:46David Imel?

  This is Marquez's writing.

• 54:47Speaker 05

  Yep.

• 54:48David Imel?

  Overhyped piece of tech.

• 54:50Speaker 02

This is hard, this is hard.

• 54:51Speaker 01

An overhyped piece of tech from the last decade?

• 54:54Speaker 05

  From the last decade.

• 54:55Speaker 02

  I mean, I'm a hater.

• 54:58Speaker 02

  So it could be...

• 54:59Speaker 05

  New soundboard bite.

• 55:07David Imel?

Yeah, this is a tough one.

• 55:08Speaker 05

  Mm-hmm.

• 55:08Speaker 01

  I don't even have an answer, I honestly don't.

• 55:10Speaker 05

  It could be software.

• 55:12Speaker 01

  Could be software?

• 55:13David Imel?

  Overhyped.

• 55:14Speaker 05

Yeah, an overhyped piece of tech.

• 55:16Speaker 01

  I...

• 55:19Speaker 01

  I can get rid of...

• 55:20Speaker 05

Should I run it again? Let's give you a little more time.

• 55:22David Imel?

  Yeah, run it again.

• 55:23Speaker 01

  Overhyped tech.

• 55:25Speaker 02

This is a hard one. This feels like a cop-out. It's like the first thing I can think of.

• 55:30Speaker 05

But think about what your partner would think of.

• 55:33David Imel?

Ellis hates a lot of things.

• 55:34Speaker 02

  I know.

• 55:35Speaker 05

  Yeah, yeah.

• 55:36Speaker 02

We're both haters. How do I pick my biggest hate?

• 55:40Speaker 04

  Overhyped.

• 55:41David Imel?

Let the hate flow through you.

• 55:44Speaker 04

I wonder why I think it's overhyped so much.

• 55:46David Imel?

Well, she think that you think it's overhyped.

• 55:49Speaker 01

  I have a good answers.

• 55:50Speaker 02

  I picked a normie answer.

• 55:51Speaker 01

This is bad. Um, I should just think it's something on the spot, overhyped, that I wish never happened, get rid of it.

• 56:01Speaker 05

That David would wish never happened.

• 56:02David Imel?

No, no, no, it's that, no, it's Marquez and I guess what he.

• 56:05Speaker 05

  Oh, I'm sorry, you're right.

• 56:07Speaker 02

I don't know how to play this.

• 56:07Speaker 05

Is that what you did last time? I don't know how to play this.

• 56:09David Imel?

Is what you did last time.

• 56:11Speaker 01

  Okay, um, nope, no.

• 56:15David Imel?

I feel like you don't want to get rid of it, right? Like you, you don't want to get rid of it.

• 56:19Speaker 02

  I do.

• 56:19David Imel?

But what do you think is just overhyped? Say, say you don't have to get rid of it, but.

• 56:23Speaker 05

  That's fair.

• 56:23David Imel?

Just think of a piece of tech that's overhyped.

• 56:27Speaker 05

  From the last 10 years.

• 56:28David Imel?

Yeah. They're like, what? It's, it's whatever compared to the hype that people buy behind it.

• 56:38Speaker 01

  I don't, I know examples, I don't have.

• 56:40David Imel?

Marquez is a true, true tech lover. He's a true lover of tech.

• 56:44Speaker 01

  Was it hyped though?

• 56:45Speaker 02

  Uh, for some, for some.

• 56:50Speaker 05

Are you guys putting the same thing?

• 56:51David Imel?

I really hope you didn't write the humane icon.

• 56:56Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 56:58David Imel?

Damn. I mean, I have one that I think Marquez would put, but I don't think that he thought of it.

• 57:02Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 57:03David Imel?

  So.

• 57:05Speaker 05

  Correct.

• 57:06David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 57:06Speaker 02

  This is a softball.

• 57:08David Imel?

I'm gonna say the humane icon, just because I think that's what he wrote.

• 57:12Speaker 01

  I wrote the humane pin.

• 57:15David Imel?

  Let's go.

• 57:17Speaker 05

  One point, alright.

• 57:18David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 57:19Speaker 05

  Alison, Mariah?

• 57:20Speaker 04

Mariah, this is a tough one because.

• 57:21Speaker 01

  Was it hyped though?

• 57:22David Imel?

It was, I mean, before it came out, it was hella hyped.

• 57:24Speaker 04

  Yeah, dude.

• 57:25David Imel?

  They were hyped.

• 57:25Speaker 05

  That was super hyped.

• 57:26Speaker 04

Do you not remember like the year leading up to it?

• 57:30David Imel?

  Yeah, the year leading.

• 57:31Speaker 04

We'd go on the website and it would be like, we're not gonna tell you what it is, but you're all [BLEEP].

• 57:36Speaker 01

They all hyped it and everyone watched it and went, no, it's not.

• 57:40Speaker 05

Yeah. Well, once they announced it.

• 57:41Speaker 01

No, we all looked at them and went like, why are they hyping this so much? It's clearly not gonna be.

• 57:46David Imel?

  Expectations, reality.

• 57:48Speaker 01

No, it was internal hype, expectations.

• 57:51David Imel?

  Yeah, that's true.

• 57:55Speaker 04

Hey, Mariah, I know you're a hater, but I also know you're someone that will live with the tech products you hate for some time. There was a while where the slack was Mariah being like, my Pixel Watch is driving me.

• 58:07David Imel?

  She loves the Pixel Watch.

• 58:08Speaker 04

Can't get me wrong, though, didn't you lose a Pixel Watch because it fell off your wrist and into a trash can?

• 58:12David Imel?

  Into a wah-wah.

• 58:13Speaker 04

And you just decided you were not gonna get it, like that it was a sigh?

• 58:16Speaker 02

I reached into a trash can and it unclipped itself into the trash can.

• 58:20David Imel?

  It was a wah-wah.

• 58:21Speaker 02

  I contemplated leaving it.

• 58:22David Imel?

It was like, my people, I am home.

• 58:24Speaker 02

I was gonna leave it at a wah-wah.

• 58:25David Imel?

It was the first generation, by the way. The Pixel Watch is good now, but the first gen was horrible.

• 58:30Speaker 02

For audio listeners, it's still here.

• 58:31Speaker 05

She's still wearing the Pixel Watch.

• 58:33Speaker 04

My instinct, you know, my first instinct is to make it something gamer-related, like gamer chairs.

• 58:38David Imel?

  Gamer stand-up.

• 58:39Speaker 04

But I think you wanted the point so bad that you went with a very banal answer. So I am also going to say the Humana iPen.

• 58:49Speaker 02

That's really unfortunate, because that's true.

• 58:51David Imel?

Oh, we should have, both of us should have tripled down on that.

• 58:54Speaker 01

  I was not.

• 58:55David Imel?

What I was thinking that you should have said, Marquez, is I know that you just hate nostalgia.

• 58:59Speaker 02

  Pixel Watch is good.

• 59:00David Imel?

I know that you're like a nostalgia hater. You're like, this only exists because of nostalgia. Even though you're really hyped about backyard baseball coming back.

• 59:07Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 59:08Speaker 02

  I would have just said.

• 59:09David Imel?

  Which is also nostalgia.

• 59:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 59:12Speaker 04

A final runner-up for the new soundboard was Marquez saying, "We've just invented this really new, cool thing, but do you remember the old thing?"

• 59:23David Imel?

That's a good one. Yeah, I would have said, for you, I would have done like emulators or something, because it's all nostalgia-based.

• 59:29Speaker 01

  In Mario Kart 39.

• 59:34David Imel?

  Okay.

• 59:35Speaker 01

  That's good.

• 59:36Speaker 05

This is somehow turning into the hater awards, but I love it. All right. Next question.

• 59:41David Imel?

  I love this game.

• 59:44Speaker 05

At what battery percentage do you think your partner starts freaking out and looking for a charger?

• 59:50David Imel?

  Oh, gosh.

• 59:52Speaker 02

  This is easy.

• 59:53Speaker 04

Yeah, what battery percentage do I start freaking out, Mariah?

• 59:56Speaker 02

I mean, Ellis is living large now. He's got-

• 59:59Speaker 01

That man came from a mini.

• 1:00:00Speaker 02

  Yeah, he's no fear.

• 1:00:01Speaker 01

He probably gets a 3% and doesn't even think twice. David?

• 1:00:06David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:06Speaker 01

I have a theory for this one.

• 1:00:08David Imel?

  Okay.

• 1:00:09Speaker 01

  Yeah, I have a guess.

• 1:00:10David Imel?

  Is it like closest?

• 1:00:12Speaker 02

Yeah, how close do we need to be?

• 1:00:13David Imel?

  Cause there's a hundred digits.

• 1:00:14Speaker 05

  Closest without going over.

• 1:00:16David Imel?

  Without going over?

• 1:00:17Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:00:21Speaker 02

  What did you put?

• 1:00:25Speaker 01

Okay, I think I got an answer.

• 1:00:27David Imel?

  Okay.

• 1:00:27Speaker 01

All right. I think I know what you would say.

• 1:00:29David Imel?

  All right. I'm ready.

• 1:00:30Speaker 01

  Should I go first?

• 1:00:31Speaker 05

  Sure.

• 1:00:31David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:33Speaker 01

You're on an iPhone. And when you hit 20% on an iPhone, it automatically switches the battery icon to red and switches to low power mode. And I think that's the exact moment you start looking for a charger. So 20.

• 1:00:47David Imel?

  64.

• 1:00:48Speaker 05

  Ooh.

• 1:00:49Speaker 01

You start to freak out at 64.

• 1:00:51David Imel?

I have massive power anxiety, dude. I have battery anxiety all the time. No, it doesn't matter that it's the air.

• 1:00:56Speaker 05

  It does, though.

• 1:00:57David Imel?

  No.

• 1:00:57Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:00:58David Imel?

  Pretty much any device-

• 1:00:59Speaker 01

The air is never even over 64%.

• 1:01:01David Imel?

  Hey.

• 1:01:01Speaker 01

You take it off the charger-

• 1:01:02David Imel?

My air is at 94 right now because I always keep it on the charger.

• 1:01:06Speaker 05

We've been doing nothing for an hour. How's it at 94?

• 1:01:08David Imel?

Yeah, because I've been doing nothing.

• 1:01:10Speaker 05

  So it drains 6%?

• 1:01:12Speaker 01

  Yeah, sitting there.

• 1:01:12David Imel?

  Well, yeah, I guess.

• 1:01:14Speaker 05

64% on an iPhone 17 will last you the rest of the day.

• 1:01:17David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:18Speaker 04

Dude, 64% on a 17 Pro will last you like-

• 1:01:20Speaker 05

  Two days.

• 1:01:21David Imel?

Not a weekend. Either way, I get really anxious when my device is at 64%.

• 1:01:26Speaker 01

  Well, I didn't go over.

• 1:01:26Speaker 05

Yeah, so you're 44% tiles off.

• 1:01:29David Imel?

  44.

• 1:01:30Speaker 04

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:01:30Speaker 05

Yeah, so let's see what, uh-

• 1:01:32David Imel?

  See what they get.

• 1:01:32Speaker 04

What do you want to guess, Mariah?

• 1:01:34Speaker 02

  I feel-

• 1:01:34Speaker 04

I wish I had listened to you. You're not gonna say anything.

• 1:01:37Speaker 02

I, I feel like you could go feral. I think your phone could get pretty low before you worry.

• 1:01:43David Imel?

I have been known to be pretty feral around these parts.

• 1:01:45Speaker 02

  I'm thinking single digits.

• 1:01:47David Imel?

  That's what I think.

• 1:01:48Speaker 02

  And my hunch is 5%.

• 1:01:52Speaker 04

This is really my fault. I don't even know why I'm mad. Like, cause I am feral. I put zero-

• 1:01:56Speaker 02

  What?

• 1:01:56Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:01:57Speaker 04

  I don't give a anymore.

• 1:01:58Speaker 05

  I knew it.

• 1:01:59Speaker 04

After that mini life, dude, my phone goes all the way down and I'm still chilling.

• 1:02:03David Imel?

Five with your phone being dead.

• 1:02:04Speaker 02

Ellis, why would you say that?

• 1:02:05Speaker 04

Because I'm on a Pro now, like-

• 1:02:06Speaker 02

That's the only number I could lose at.

• 1:02:08Speaker 04

I wrote it down and then Adam says closest without going over and I knew.

• 1:02:14Speaker 05

I will say I knew that you would write zero.

• 1:02:17Speaker 02

I was gonna say like 1%.

• 1:02:19David Imel?

  I was thinking 3.

• 1:02:20Speaker 04

As soon as I closed it going over, I was like, well, all of the numbers are over.

• 1:02:25David Imel?

That means we get the point.

• 1:02:26Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:02:26Speaker 05

  Yep.

• 1:02:26Speaker 02

  By default.

• 1:02:27Speaker 05

  Let's go.

• 1:02:29Speaker 04

I routinely just like don't really charge my phone that much.

• 1:02:33David Imel?

  You're insane.

• 1:02:34Speaker 04

Like I regularly just like fall asleep with it.

• 1:02:36Speaker 05

Well, the next question was going to be, what is your current battery percentage?

• 1:02:40David Imel?

  Oh, but I just said.

• 1:02:41Speaker 05

David just said it, so I have to ignore that.

• 1:02:42David Imel?

  Yeah, but it's Marquez's. He said 94?

• 1:02:45Speaker 02

  That's true.

• 1:02:45Speaker 05

That is true. Okay, yeah, all right.

• 1:02:47David Imel?

On which, which phone of his?

• 1:02:48Speaker 05

  Don't worry about it.

• 1:02:49Speaker 02

  That's.

• 1:02:50Speaker 05

That is fair. Okay, no, let's do the air.

• 1:02:52David Imel?

  They're very different.

• 1:02:52Speaker 05

The air. What is the battery percentage on Mariah Marquez's phone?

• 1:02:56Speaker 04

Okay, but are we doing closest without going over?

• 1:02:59Speaker 05

  Closest without going over.

• 1:03:00David Imel?

  Without going over.

• 1:03:04David Imel?

  Interesting.

• 1:03:05Speaker 04

Mariah, what phone do you have right now?

• 1:03:08Speaker 02

I'm sorry to all of my Pixel lovers that we are now on the S24 Ultra.

• 1:03:14David Imel?

  Oh, whoa.

• 1:03:14Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 1:03:15David Imel?

  What happened to you?

• 1:03:15Speaker 02

  It's not by choice.

• 1:03:16David Imel?

  What happened to your Pixel?

• 1:03:18Speaker 05

  I cursed hers. What happened?

• 1:03:19Speaker 04

And Mariah seems like a charges her phone every night kind of person.

• 1:03:22David Imel?

  What happened?

• 1:03:23Speaker 04

And Mariah drives to work, which means she charges her phone in the car.

• 1:03:27Speaker 05

  Sometimes does.

• 1:03:28Speaker 04

And she sat at her desk for about an hour and a half.

• 1:03:31David Imel?

  What happened to your Pixel?

• 1:03:32Speaker 02

It fell one foot and the screen won't turn on.

• 1:03:37Speaker 05

  I cursed her.

• 1:03:38David Imel?

  Was it a six?

• 1:03:39Speaker 02

  Uh, yeah.

• 1:03:39David Imel?

  Legendary.

• 1:03:40Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:03:40David Imel?

You're probably the last remaining Pixel six.

• 1:03:43Speaker 02

Uh, support ends in October, so it was fine.

• 1:03:47David Imel?

That's fair. All right. Um, I'm gonna guess. Okay. I think that it's at, hmm, without going over.

• 1:03:56Speaker 05

Yeah, without going over, Marquez's iPhone Air.

• 1:04:00David Imel?

  I think it's 72, but I'm gonna give myself a little buffer room. I'm gonna say 69.

• 1:04:04Speaker 05

  Nice.

• 1:04:05David Imel?

  Thanks.

• 1:04:05Speaker 05

  All right.

• 1:04:06David Imel?

What is it? 83. See, this is what I'm talking about. It's not that bad.

• 1:04:10Speaker 05

  83, okay.

• 1:04:11David Imel?

The battery is not that bad.

• 1:04:12Speaker 05

  Dude, it's 12 o'clock.

• 1:04:14Speaker 02

We're not even halfway through the day.

• 1:04:15David Imel?

  Yeah, I know, but anything.

• 1:04:17Speaker 04

  Wait.

• 1:04:17Speaker 05

  He's done nothing.

• 1:04:18Speaker 04

  What phone?

• 1:04:18David Imel?

  iPhone Air.

• 1:04:19Speaker 05

  iPhone Air.

• 1:04:20Speaker 04

Oh, okay. Then I feel really confident in my guess. So confident I'm using this like confidence.

• 1:04:24Speaker 05

  Oh, snap.

• 1:04:25Speaker 02

  Brother.

• 1:04:26Speaker 05

It could be a plus three.

• 1:04:27Speaker 04

And I think Mariah has 84% battery or greater.

• 1:04:32Speaker 02

And that is why I have 91%.

• 1:04:36David Imel?

  Damn triple.

• 1:04:36Speaker 04

I made it up. I made up for my 0% gaffe.

• 1:04:39Speaker 05

Wow, that's plus 3 points for Ellis and Mariah.

• 1:04:42David Imel?

Damn, a trip. Is that what they call it, a trip in basketball? When you get a triple? A 3-pointer?

• 1:04:47Speaker 04

  Sure, man.

• 1:04:47Speaker 05

  Yeah, it could work.

• 1:04:48David Imel?

What do they call it, a trip?

• 1:04:49Speaker 05

  Well, I don't want to...

• 1:04:50David Imel?

  Honestly?

• 1:04:50Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:04:51David Imel?

  Yeah, that works.

• 1:04:51Speaker 05

  3.

• 1:04:52David Imel?

Yeah, a trip. My baby got a lot of trips.

• 1:04:54Speaker 02

  Alright.

• 1:04:55Speaker 05

Got an okay amount of trips. Okay.

• 1:04:58David Imel?

  I had the bobblehead.

• 1:04:59Speaker 04

  The big bobblehead?

• 1:05:00David Imel?

  The bibby bobblehead.

• 1:05:01Speaker 05

Quick update on the score after that confidence boost by Ellis. He and Mariah now have 4 total points. David and Marquez running up the rear with 2.

• 1:05:11David Imel?

  Okay.

• 1:05:12Speaker 02

  Close.

• 1:05:12David Imel?

We can still get our confidence.

• 1:05:14Speaker 05

  Lock it?

• 1:05:14David Imel?

Yeah. We gotta get this one.

• 1:05:15Speaker 05

You gotta get it. Alright. Is your partner a read receipts person or a red receipts person?

• 1:05:22Speaker 04

  Oh!

• 1:05:23David Imel?

  I'm guessing, I'm guessing Marquez.

• 1:05:25Speaker 02

  Wait, what?

• 1:05:26David Imel?

No, you're saying what you are.

• 1:05:27Speaker 05

How do you say it? How do you pronounce it? Read or red receipts?

• 1:05:29David Imel?

We've had this, we have literally yelled at each other about this so many times.

• 1:05:32Speaker 02

I didn't know this was even a debate.

• 1:05:34Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:05:35Speaker 04

We debate all the time the way it's supposed to be said. Read receipts or red receipts?

• 1:05:40David Imel?

I don't even know what you're writing on your whiteboard.

• 1:05:43Speaker 02

  It's gonna be the same.

• 1:05:46David Imel?

Wait, what do you mean? I don't think I'm... It's phonetic.

• 1:05:50Speaker 05

  Okay, okay.

• 1:05:51David Imel?

  You write phonetically.

• 1:05:53Speaker 05

  Alright, what do we got?

• 1:05:55David Imel?

I am not as confident in this as I wanted to be.

• 1:05:57Speaker 05

Oh my goodness, I'm not, I'm not using it.

• 1:05:59David Imel?

I know your answer. I'm not using it. I, but I think you say read receipts.

• 1:06:04Speaker 04

  David?

• 1:06:05David Imel?

Marquez, what happened to you? What happened? It's a red.

• 1:06:08Speaker 04

Marquez, I thought you said read receipts.

• 1:06:10David Imel?

No, I said red. Read receipts. Okay.

• 1:06:14David Imel?

And you say red. That's why I didn't use the confidence. That's why I didn't use it. We had to lock in, Marquez.

• 1:06:18Speaker 05

  I forgot.

• 1:06:19David Imel?

  It's okay.

• 1:06:20Speaker 05

  Damn.

• 1:06:20David Imel?

  That's my fault.

• 1:06:21Speaker 04

  It's okay.

• 1:06:21Speaker 05

Well, I'm correct, so it's fine.

• 1:06:24Speaker 04

Ryan, I think you should use your confidence boost here.

• 1:06:26Speaker 02

  Do we each get one?

• 1:06:27Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:06:28David Imel?

  Oh.

• 1:06:29Speaker 04

  I think you should.

• 1:06:29Speaker 02

I didn't know that. I thought it was one per team.

• 1:06:31Speaker 05

  No, every player gets one.

• 1:06:32David Imel?

  We gotta lock that one.

• 1:06:33Speaker 04

I mean, if you feel confident.

• 1:06:34Speaker 02

I mean, there's only one right answer.

• 1:06:36Speaker 04

  I think so.

• 1:06:36David Imel?

There is only one right answer.

• 1:06:37Speaker 02

  There's, there's no debate.

• 1:06:38Speaker 04

And I think we're in agreement.

• 1:06:39David Imel?

  I agree with you.

• 1:06:39Speaker 04

So I think you should use it.

• 1:06:40Speaker 02

  And it's...

• 1:06:41Speaker 05

  It's a lot of talking.

• 1:06:41Speaker 04

Well, are you using the confidence boost or not?

• 1:06:43Speaker 02

I'm gonna use the confidence boost.

• 1:06:45Speaker 05

  Oh, snap.

• 1:06:46Speaker 02

  Read receipts.

• 1:06:48Speaker 02

  There's only one.

• 1:06:50David Imel?

  No.

• 1:06:51Speaker 02

  Who says read receipt?

• 1:06:52David Imel?

Bro, okay, listen to me. Listen to me, Mariah.

• 1:06:55Speaker 02

  What?

• 1:06:56David Imel?

  Listen to me. Okay.

• 1:06:57Speaker 02

  Ellis.

• 1:06:57David Imel?

  A receipt, right?

• 1:06:59Speaker 01

A receipt means the other person has seen it, correct?

• 1:07:03Speaker 04

  A receipt.

• 1:07:03Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:07:05David Imel?

That means that they have read your message.

• 1:07:08Speaker 04

Yeah. A receipt is inherently a token generated by an action in the past.

• 1:07:12Speaker 02

I don't want to hear it.

• 1:07:15Speaker 02

I don't want to hear it.

• 1:07:15Speaker 01

  It's read.

• 1:07:16Speaker 02

  It's read receipts.

• 1:07:17David Imel?

  What do you?

• 1:07:17Speaker 01

  It's read receipts.

• 1:07:18David Imel?

  Give me your logic.

• 1:07:19Speaker 01

  Did you read it?

• 1:07:21David Imel?

  No.

• 1:07:21Speaker 01

  There's a receipt.

• 1:07:22David Imel?

They read it because you got the receipt.

• 1:07:24Speaker 02

So is this team read and team read?

• 1:07:25David Imel?

You are the one that got the receipt and they read your message.

• 1:07:28Speaker 04

You would never, you would never say like, this is a receipt of something I buy. You would say, this is a receipt of something I bought because you did it in the past.

• 1:07:35Speaker 01

  This receipt.

• 1:07:36David Imel?

It's a receipt, which is something that happened before.

• 1:07:39Speaker 04

This receipt is a token of them having read my message.

• 1:07:42Speaker 01

Yeah, for some reason, the phrasing read receipt, because we never say like grocery receipt or, or tax receipt or whatever, we, we use, it's just a unique phrase of read receipt. Like, we just happen to use these words next to each other in this way.

• 1:07:54David Imel?

  No.

• 1:07:54Speaker 01

And for whatever reason, it's read receipt. Read receipt doesn't, just doesn't work.

• 1:07:59David Imel?

  They read it.

• 1:08:00Speaker 04

  They read it.

• 1:08:00Speaker 01

Yeah, so you'd say they read it and they got a read receipt when they read it.

• 1:08:03David Imel?

You, no, you got a read receipt when they read it.

• 1:08:05Speaker 04

  You say, they say not.

• 1:08:07David Imel?

  Read receipt?

• 1:08:07Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:08:08Speaker 01

  Read receipt.

• 1:08:09David Imel?

You do not get a receipt of your own message.

• 1:08:11Speaker 02

  This is [__] up.

• 1:08:13Speaker 01

  I got a.

• 1:08:14Speaker 02

  Why would you do this?

• 1:08:14Speaker 01

I get the receipt. David, when do I get the receipt?

• 1:08:17David Imel?

  When they read your.

• 1:08:18Speaker 01

  When they read my message.

• 1:08:20Speaker 02

  I miss Andrew.

• 1:08:21David Imel?

  Because they have.

• 1:08:21Speaker 01

  So it's a read receipt.

• 1:08:22David Imel?

But they have read it by the time you get the receipt.

• 1:08:25Speaker 01

No, when they read it, I get a receipt. Read receipt. No, it's their read receipt, but it's your read receipt. How about that?

• 1:08:33Speaker 02

  What's the next question?

• 1:08:34David Imel?

  We need to move on.

• 1:08:35Speaker 04

  This is disappointing.

• 1:08:36David Imel?

We've already done this debate many times on this podcast.

• 1:08:39Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's tough.

• 1:08:39Speaker 04

  This is your fault.

• 1:08:42Speaker 01

You threw a head fake, completely wrong direction. That's great.

• 1:08:46David Imel?

  I love it.

• 1:08:46Speaker 05

All that talking worked out in Marquesa's favor.

• 1:08:48Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:08:49Speaker 05

  All right.

• 1:08:50David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:50Speaker 05

Next question. I'll go a little easier this time.

• 1:08:55Speaker 04

  It's read receipt.

• 1:08:56Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:08:56David Imel?

  It is read.

• 1:08:57Speaker 02

You can be wrong, it's fine.

• 1:08:58Speaker 01

  Ellis and I are right.

• 1:08:59David Imel?

  It's okay to be right.

• 1:09:01Speaker 05

If your partner could only use one phone for the rest of their life, what would it be? Assume the phone is in working condition forever.

• 1:09:08David Imel?

How specific do I need to be?

• 1:09:09Speaker 01

  Like, one phone at all?

• 1:09:10Speaker 05

One phone. I, I need model, yeah. It doesn't need to be like the gigabyte storage, you know, like whatever, but.

• 1:09:18Speaker 05

  Like a one phone.

• 1:09:19Speaker 01

  One phone person.

• 1:09:20Speaker 05

That will work forever. It's a one phone person.

• 1:09:23Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 1:09:23Speaker 05

But they can't switch off of that phone.

• 1:09:25David Imel?

  Wait.

• 1:09:25Speaker 05

  What would it be?

• 1:09:27Speaker 02

  That's that's kind of tough.

• 1:09:28David Imel?

  Oh, it's for me?

• 1:09:29Speaker 01

  It's my phone.

• 1:09:30David Imel?

  Your phone?

• 1:09:31Speaker 05

  Yep.

• 1:09:32David Imel?

  So, oh, yeah.

• 1:09:33Speaker 05

  You need to guess, Stephen.

• 1:09:33David Imel?

  I'm guessing, yeah.

• 1:09:34Speaker 05

  Yep.

• 1:09:36Speaker 02

  Ellis, I don't.

• 1:09:38Speaker 02

  I don't know.

• 1:09:43David Imel?

Okay. I'm gonna guess the S26 Ultra.

• 1:09:48Speaker 05

  Why would you guess that?

• 1:09:51David Imel?

  Really? That's like, I don't know.

• 1:09:56David Imel?

  Really?

• 1:09:58David Imel?

  Not anymore?

• 1:09:59Speaker 01

  No.

• 1:10:00Speaker 04

  One plus fifteen.

• 1:10:01David Imel?

  iPhone seventeen from iPhone.

• 1:10:02Speaker 01

Just give me the big one. That'll get a ton of years of software updates.

• 1:10:06Speaker 05

Oh, you thought way too practical. I for you, I would have put HTC One M8. Like, this is the phone that I can use forever.

• 1:10:12Speaker 01

  That's a different question. That's a different.

• 1:10:13David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:14Speaker 05

One phone that you can use forever. Doesn't like, assume it's working forever, perfectly functioning, perfectly, you know?

• 1:10:19Speaker 01

A hypothetical phone that'll work forever.

• 1:10:21David Imel?

  Is it the S26 Ultra?

• 1:10:24Speaker 01

No, I really, I mean, I would probably use like an older, like a.

• 1:10:27Speaker 05

Yeah, that's what I figured you would go.

• 1:10:30David Imel?

It's just because you were always switching back to both the S24 and the S25 Ultras.

• 1:10:35Speaker 05

But notably not the S26 Ultra. So why did you pick that one?

• 1:10:38David Imel?

  I know that, but I.

• 1:10:41Speaker 05

This is the first year he's like maining a OnePlus.

• 1:10:44Speaker 01

  Damn.

• 1:10:45David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:45Speaker 01

  We tried.

• 1:10:46Speaker 05

  Yep.

• 1:10:46David Imel?

But you didn't let the camera on the OnePlus, right?

• 1:10:48Speaker 01

  Not really.

• 1:10:48David Imel?

Yeah, so that's why it was.

• 1:10:49Speaker 05

Yeah, but that's why he has an iPhone Air for that awesome single camera.

• 1:10:52David Imel?

Yeah, what are you even doing for photography?

• 1:10:54Speaker 01

  An Oppo Find X9 Ultra.

• 1:10:55David Imel?

You have three phones with you now?

• 1:10:56Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:10:57Speaker 02

  Wait a second.

• 1:10:57Speaker 05

  What? When did this happen?

• 1:10:59Speaker 01

I have a backpack for that.

• 1:11:01Speaker 05

Wait, but don't you have the Hasselblad in the backpack?

• 1:11:03Speaker 01

  Not all the time.

• 1:11:04David Imel?

That thing is heavy as hell.

• 1:11:06Speaker 04

Marquez, have you seen those harmonica?

• 1:11:09Speaker 04

Do you know the harmonica vests?

• 1:11:12Speaker 01

  Kinda?

• 1:11:12Speaker 04

Like, if you if you're really serious about harmonica, you've worn it every key.

• 1:11:15Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:11:16Speaker 04

You you wear a vest and you keep, I think we might.

• 1:11:18Speaker 05

You should get one of those.

• 1:11:20Speaker 01

I got the iPhone Air pocket, the X9 Ultra pocket.

• 1:11:23Speaker 05

Michael Fisher used to have one of those.

• 1:11:24David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:25Speaker 05

The little dual chest strap thing.

• 1:11:27Speaker 01

  Yeah, I could rock that.

• 1:11:28Speaker 05

  Okay, anyway, Alyssa and Mariah.

• 1:11:30Speaker 04

Mariah, the first thing I have to deduce is whether or not you answered this question realistically or fancifully and went with like a, like a feature phone that is somehow like miraculously working on modern, or if you went, you know, the realistic answer.

• 1:11:43David Imel?

I'm curious what Mariah would say.

• 1:11:45Speaker 04

  I think I think.

• 1:11:45Speaker 02

I kind of panicked, I'm not gonna lie.

• 1:11:48David Imel?

I kind of think I know. I think I know.

• 1:11:52Speaker 02

  Marques doesn't like my answer.

• 1:11:53Speaker 04

Yeah, I'm gonna assume that means you went realistic and if you panicked, it means you went with something reliable. So I'm gonna say that you went with your classic Coral Pixel 6.

• 1:12:07David Imel?

  That's my guess.

• 1:12:08Speaker 02

That would be the safe answer and probably a more rational choice than the Pixel 3A.

• 1:12:13Speaker 04

Why would you choose the 3A? That's 3A?

• 1:12:16Speaker 05

  That's so specific.

• 1:12:18Speaker 02

Cause I had the Pixel 3A and it was the nostalgia. I missed the back. Didn't have the fingerprint on the back.

• 1:12:23Speaker 05

  Yeah, that's a good one.

• 1:12:24Speaker 02

She's kind of cute. It's small.

• 1:12:26David Imel?

  Yeah, there's so much.

• 1:12:27Speaker 02

  It fit in my pocket.

• 1:12:28Speaker 05

The teal power button, right? Is that the one?

• 1:12:30David Imel?

  No, that was the two.

• 1:12:31Speaker 02

  Didn't it have different, um?

• 1:12:32David Imel?

  The 3A I don't think had that. The 4, the 4.

• 1:12:35Speaker 05

  I'm remembering the 2.

• 1:12:37David Imel?

  The 4A had.

• 1:12:38Speaker 04

The 3? 4A came in a pink color or orange color. We had a big argument.

• 1:12:42David Imel?

The 4 did. The 4 came in this sand color, not the 4A.

• 1:12:46Speaker 02

  It was purely.

• 1:12:47David Imel?

4A came in coral, I think.

• 1:12:49Speaker 04

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Like salmon.

• 1:12:51David Imel?

  Yeah, salmon.

• 1:12:52Speaker 02

It was just small. It's portable.

• 1:12:53David Imel?

  It's not small.

• 1:12:54Speaker 02

  And it was affordable.

• 1:12:55David Imel?

The 3A was bigger than the 3.

• 1:12:59Speaker 05

Well, 3XL I think was bigger.

• 1:13:01David Imel?

No, but the, no, the 3A was bigger than the 3.

• 1:13:04Speaker 02

Maybe my memory doesn't serve me well.

• 1:13:05David Imel?

  Yeah, it was annoyingly big.

• 1:13:07Speaker 05

  The nostalgia glasses are real.

• 1:13:08David Imel?

The As are all big, which is annoying.

• 1:13:09Speaker 02

Yeah, it was a terrible answer.

• 1:13:11Speaker 05

I just find it hilarious that you chose an A series phone like Alyssa's gonna get that.

• 1:13:14David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:15Speaker 05

All right, we gotta lock back in.

• 1:13:16David Imel?

  Lock.

• 1:13:17Speaker 04

No, don't lock back in. Lock back in. We're locked out. Please.

• 1:13:20David Imel?

We're locked out. We gotta lock in.

• 1:13:22Speaker 04

We're one point ahead, but with no bonuses.

• 1:13:24Speaker 05

  No, two points ahead.

• 1:13:25Speaker 04

Two points ahead, but with no bonuses.

• 1:13:27David Imel?

  We both have our bonuses.

• 1:13:28Speaker 05

Yeah, they both have their bonuses. Okay, next question. Window seat or aisle seat?

• 1:13:33David Imel?

Like, what would Marquette, oh, what'd I do? Yes, oh, yeah.

• 1:13:36Speaker 02

But look how fun the buttons on the Pixel 3 are.

• 1:13:39Speaker 01

Oh, no, I'm actually, I actually, no, that's valid.

• 1:13:41Speaker 02

  They are kinda nice.

• 1:13:42Speaker 01

  I was picturing this accent.

• 1:13:43David Imel?

You do book my flights, Marquez.

• 1:13:45Speaker 05

  Well, Harper does.

• 1:13:46Speaker 01

I know, which is crazy, because I have logic for why you'd say both.

• 1:13:50David Imel?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:13:51Speaker 01

I know the answer. I think I know the answer.

• 1:13:53Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:13:54Speaker 02

  This is another 50/50 split.

• 1:13:55Speaker 01

Because of, of booking in the past.

• 1:13:58David Imel?

  Because of?

• 1:13:59Speaker 01

  I'm gonna use my [BLEEP].

• 1:14:03Speaker 04

  I can't, I'm not gonna say.

• 1:14:05Speaker 01

I can't use it yet. I can't use it yet. I can't use my confidence yet. Okay. My logic is David's bringing his camera. He's definitely gonna want a window seat to take pictures out the plane window. However, comma, I think I'm the only one who prefers a window seat when I've booked people in the studio. They either say, "Give me an aisle," or "I don't care." So I think David is one of the aisle people.

• 1:14:31David Imel?

  Is this your official guess?

• 1:14:32Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:14:33David Imel?

  God [BLEEP].

• 1:14:34Speaker 05

  Always window seat.

• 1:14:36Speaker 04

  Is this question?

• 1:14:37David Imel?

  Yeah, cuz I love-

• 1:14:38Speaker 01

Did you say you preferred window?

• 1:14:38David Imel?

  Yeah, always, always.

• 1:14:40Speaker 05

The only reason I say I don't care is so that other people can get window seat. I think we're all window seat people.

• 1:14:45Speaker 04

Is this about when we're flying for... Fuck, I don't wanna ask this question, cuz I feel like he's like an [BLEEP]. Is it about business class or economy class?

• 1:14:53Speaker 05

  Wow, you rich [BLEEP].

• 1:14:55Speaker 04

I know, I know. I didn't wanna, it does matter. That drastically, yes, that changes my answer.

• 1:15:00Speaker 05

  That's true, yeah, that's a big difference.

• 1:15:02Speaker 04

  So what is it?

• 1:15:03David Imel?

  For me, it doesn't matter.

• 1:15:04Speaker 05

  Well, what'd you put down?

• 1:15:05David Imel?

  I put down window.

• 1:15:06Speaker 04

  I can't say.

• 1:15:06Speaker 01

Well, you have a different answer. Oh, interesting.

• 1:15:08Speaker 04

No, that, I, I put down economy, cuz I'm a man of the people.

• 1:15:12Speaker 01

In which case, you prefer one thing, but-

• 1:15:15Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:15:16Speaker 01

  But, hmm.

• 1:15:17Speaker 04

  Mm-hmm, 100%.

• 1:15:18Speaker 01

Okay, I think that helps me know what you said.

• 1:15:20Speaker 04

Yeah, well, doesn't matter what you say.

• 1:15:23Speaker 02

Well, with my deductive reasoning, and my 50/50% chance of getting it right, I do know on United that the aisle seat has smaller footroom.

• 1:15:35Speaker 04

  What?

• 1:15:36Speaker 01

  Really?

• 1:15:36Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:15:37Speaker 04

  In a corner?

• 1:15:37Speaker 02

Like, when you're putting your backpack under, actually, the backpack room is smaller than the window seat.

• 1:15:41Speaker 05

  Oh, that's true.

• 1:15:42Speaker 01

  Because of the seat rails.

• 1:15:43Speaker 02

But I do know, you're a man of long legs. And so...

• 1:15:47Speaker 04

  My leg's the long way.

• 1:15:49Speaker 02

That does make me feel like you would prefer more space. You like a view, but I feel like you value being closer to the snacks, which makes me feel like...

• 1:15:58Speaker 04

This is the most, like, LLM.

• 1:16:02Speaker 05

  No, wait.

• 1:16:03Speaker 04

You like a view, but you also prefer...

• 1:16:06Speaker 05

  I cannot answer this question.

• 1:16:07Speaker 02

And I feel like you are an aisle seat girly.

• 1:16:11Speaker 04

  You nailed it, Mariah.

• 1:16:13David Imel?

  Guys, we gotta lock in.

• 1:16:14Speaker 04

  Also, we now...

• 1:16:15David Imel?

  Gotta lock in.

• 1:16:16Speaker 04

Soundboard 2.0 has a long way button if you go to page 1. Waveform Podcast, the long way.

• 1:16:24David Imel?

Very nice. Okay, we gotta lock in.

• 1:16:27Speaker 05

  Damn.

• 1:16:27David Imel?

We gotta use our doubles if we...

• 1:16:28Speaker 04

We never mentioned we updated the soundboard. You guys have been asking for weeks.

• 1:16:31David Imel?

  That's true.

• 1:16:31Speaker 05

There's a lot of new stuff on here.

• 1:16:33Speaker 04

  A lot of new sounds.

• 1:16:34Speaker 05

  We're trickling them out.

• 1:16:35Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:16:35David Imel?

  Nice.

• 1:16:36Speaker 05

All right. They'll be rolling out over the upcoming weeks.

• 1:16:38David Imel?

  Lock in.

• 1:16:38Speaker 01

Lock in, lock in. We need this three pointer right now.

• 1:16:40Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 1:16:41David Imel?

  We need two three pointers.

• 1:16:42Speaker 01

  We need this tray.

• 1:16:43David Imel?

  Try.

• 1:16:44Speaker 01

  Channel your inner Trey Young.

• 1:16:46David Imel?

Trip. Let's... We need this trip.

• 1:16:47Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 1:16:48Speaker 04

  Triple double flip.

• 1:16:49Speaker 05

Your partner is making a list of specs in a Google Doc.

• 1:16:53David Imel?

  Okay.

• 1:16:54Speaker 05

Are they using dashes or bullet points?

• 1:16:56David Imel?

  Oh, no.

• 1:16:58Speaker 02

What kind of question is this?

• 1:17:00Speaker 01

  No, dude, it's important.

• 1:17:00Speaker 05

  Designed to make you fight.

• 1:17:01David Imel?

  Dude. Andrew and I...

• 1:17:04Speaker 05

Wait, up, up, eh, don't give too much away.

• 1:17:06David Imel?

That's true. I can't say. Well, I know, but Marquez is the one that's... I'm guessing him, so it doesn't matter. Doesn't matter what I put.

• 1:17:16Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 1:17:17David Imel?

Andrew and I kind of co-write the podcast together, and I use bullet points, and he uses dashes, and it's infuriating. And I'm sure it's also infuriating for him.

• 1:17:27Speaker 04

Why did you use... What's getting this argument out?

• 1:17:29David Imel?

  I love the bullet points.

• 1:17:31Speaker 04

  Why?

• 1:17:31David Imel?

  I don't know, man.

• 1:17:32Speaker 05

I have a real big brain answer for this.

• 1:17:35Speaker 04

I have a small brain answer, and it proves that I'm right.

• 1:17:37Speaker 05

That's also the big brain answer, surprisingly. All right, Flip Marie, what do we got?

• 1:17:41David Imel?

  Smooth out your brain.

• 1:17:42Speaker 04

Wait, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, don't, don't do that.

• 1:17:44Speaker 05

  Wait, we're not ready yet?

• 1:17:45David Imel?

  We guess.

• 1:17:45Speaker 04

  We haven't guessed yet.

• 1:17:47Speaker 05

  Oh, you're right.

• 1:17:48Speaker 04

  I'm in trivia mode.

• 1:17:50Speaker 04

  Do not flip and read.

• 1:17:51Speaker 01

  All right.

• 1:17:52David Imel?

Should I trip it right now? Should I trip this? It is 50 50.

• 1:17:55Speaker 01

  Triple double.

• 1:17:56David Imel?

It might be worth tripping. I'm gonna trip it.

• 1:17:59Speaker 01

  Trip.

• 1:18:00David Imel?

  I'm tripping for, uh, bullets.

• 1:18:03Speaker 05

  Marquez?

• 1:18:07Speaker 04

  Thank you, Marquez.

• 1:18:10David Imel?

  Dashes for me, dog. Dashes.

• 1:18:14Speaker 02

You literally just said he uses bullets.

• 1:18:17David Imel?

No, I use bullets. Marques, Andrew uses dashes.

• 1:18:20Speaker 02

  Oh, I see.

• 1:18:20Speaker 01

Where do you think he got that from?

• 1:18:23David Imel?

  Daddy.

• 1:18:26Speaker 05

  Ellis, you're up.

• 1:18:27Speaker 04

No, I'm just trying to think if I've, we've definitely collabed on a Google Doc before. I just can't remember what you do, but I'm, I believe so strongly that one of these is the right answer. And I believe that answer is dashes, which is why I'm gonna say, Mariah, you're probably a bullet point person.

• 1:18:43David Imel?

  Nice, nice.

• 1:18:45Speaker 04

I knew if I went with my gut, I'd be wrong.

• 1:18:47David Imel?

I should have known that, too.

• 1:18:48Speaker 04

I like dashes because you don't need to click the mouse.

• 1:18:52Speaker 02

  That's true. That's true.

• 1:18:53Speaker 05

You don't need to click the mouse.

• 1:18:54Speaker 04

If you just hit the dash button on a new, on a new line and then hit space, it, it goes into formatting.

• 1:18:59David Imel?

But it turns into a bullet.

• 1:19:01Speaker 04

  No, it turns into.

• 1:19:01Speaker 05

I think that's if you hit enter, it turns it into a bullet.

• 1:19:03Speaker 04

No, it never, it never turns it into a bullet.

• 1:19:05David Imel?

I do it all the time.

• 1:19:06Speaker 04

  I never.

• 1:19:07David Imel?

Wait, so you do use bullets?

• 1:19:08Speaker 01

No, I, I hit a dash and hit space and it makes it a bullet.

• 1:19:11Speaker 04

  In what, in what?

• 1:19:12David Imel?

  You use bullets?

• 1:19:13Speaker 01

  Maybe it's not Google Docs.

• 1:19:15Speaker 04

So in Apple Notes, I can say with 100% certainty, it's dashes.

• 1:19:18Speaker 05

  Yeah, but it's Apple Notes.

• 1:19:19Speaker 01

In Tic Tic, I know it makes it bullets, but maybe.

• 1:19:22David Imel?

  The question was Google Docs.

• 1:19:23Speaker 05

Yeah, it was about Google Docs.

• 1:19:24Speaker 04

I think in Google Docs, it's also dashes.

• 1:19:25Speaker 05

I was gonna say, wait, so what do you think happens? Let me test it out right now.

• 1:19:29Speaker 04

So if you hit, create a new line, yeah.

• 1:19:32Speaker 05

  Create a new line.

• 1:19:33Speaker 04

Hit dash and then hit space and then it should indent it.

• 1:19:37Speaker 05

  It stays a dash.

• 1:19:38Speaker 04

  Let's go.

• 1:19:40Speaker 01

  But it indents it?

• 1:19:41Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:19:41Speaker 05

It indents it, but it stays a dash.

• 1:19:42Speaker 04

But I think you might be thinking of Tic Tic.

• 1:19:44Speaker 01

There's a couple of apps that treat it differently, damn.

• 1:19:46Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:19:47Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:19:48David Imel?

  Another zero.

• 1:19:49Speaker 04

I'm sorry, how many points we got right now?

• 1:19:50David Imel?

  Six points.

• 1:19:51Speaker 01

  All right.

• 1:19:52David Imel?

Marquez, you gotta, you gotta use your trip on me.

• 1:19:55Speaker 01

  I do, I do.

• 1:19:55David Imel?

You gotta know what I'm thinking.

• 1:19:57Speaker 01

  Yeah, I'm trying to.

• 1:19:59David Imel?

  Lock in.

• 1:19:59Speaker 01

  I'm locking in.

• 1:20:00David Imel?

  Lock in.

• 1:20:00Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:20:01Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 1:20:01David Imel?

  All right.

• 1:20:02Speaker 05

Are we ready? If they had to use one kind of phone for the next year, would it fold or flip?

• 1:20:09David Imel?

  Me?

• 1:20:10Speaker 05

  You gotta pick one.

• 1:20:18Speaker 02

  Oh, God. Sorry.

• 1:20:20Speaker 01

  For the next one year?

• 1:20:21Speaker 05

For the next year, just a year.

• 1:20:23Speaker 02

  No. It's terrible.

• 1:20:26Speaker 05

  Right.

• 1:20:27Speaker 04

No, it's okay. I'm the sound guy.

• 1:20:30Speaker 01

Okay, I got one. I think I got one.

• 1:20:32David Imel?

  I'm nervous.

• 1:20:36Speaker 04

My eraser looks like Pigpen from the Peanuts. My board does because of the lack of quality of my eraser.

• 1:20:41David Imel?

  I'm nervous.

• 1:20:42Speaker 01

I think Mariah should go first.

• 1:20:43Speaker 04

  Mariah, what'd I put?

• 1:20:45Speaker 02

I feel like it's the opposite of what I would do.

• 1:20:48Speaker 04

  It is.

• 1:20:49Speaker 02

You don't even know what I'm gonna say.

• 1:20:50Speaker 05

  You can't tell her.

• 1:20:51Speaker 04

I do know what you're gonna say. I do know what you're gonna say.

• 1:20:53Speaker 05

You can't tell her yes or no.

• 1:20:53Speaker 02

I have tiny pockets, so I'd want the flip, so I feel like you want the fold.

• 1:20:56Speaker 04

Exactly, because I love, I was really loud, I'm sorry about that. I love performatively reading, and there's nothing better than reading on a folding phone.

• 1:21:03Speaker 02

It's like a book, but not.

• 1:21:04Speaker 04

When you have a folding phone folded out and you're able to have two columns of text, it actually is like a game changer.

• 1:21:10Speaker 02

And it says, "Look at me."

• 1:21:11Speaker 05

  Yep.

• 1:21:11Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:21:12Speaker 02

  Look at me.

• 1:21:13Speaker 05

That's quite as much as I've been reading.

• 1:21:15Speaker 04

  I'm better than you.

• 1:21:16Speaker 01

I don't want to use my confidence.

• 1:21:17Speaker 04

  Sixers and sevens.

• 1:21:20Speaker 05

Even in your fantasy, you have Sixers going to the game seven?

• 1:21:24David Imel?

  I'd be careful.

• 1:21:26Speaker 04

  Because that's...

• 1:21:26Speaker 01

I'm like 78% sure of this one.

• 1:21:31Speaker 05

  78, not 67?

• 1:21:32Speaker 01

But unfortunately, that means I'm 22% unsure, which is like 1 for 5.

• 1:21:37Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:21:38Speaker 01

And I don't, I think you would want to max out and get a fold. It's one year.

• 1:21:47Speaker 01

You could, you could edit photos, you could use, yeah, I'm gonna go fold.

• 1:21:52David Imel?

  Fold, okay.

• 1:21:53Speaker 04

  Let's go.

• 1:21:54Speaker 05

  Nice.

• 1:21:55Speaker 01

  Didn't use the confidence.

• 1:21:56Speaker 05

You did not use the confidence.

• 1:21:57David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:59Speaker 01

  I wasn't confident.

• 1:21:59David Imel?

Yeah. I haven't used a flip since the first Z Flip.

• 1:22:04Speaker 02

  They're fun.

• 1:22:05Speaker 01

  Yeah. The Flip 7s, fantastic.

• 1:22:06Speaker 05

  The new ones are great.

• 1:22:07David Imel?

Yeah, I should try one of the new ones. It's been a while.

• 1:22:10Speaker 05

  Okay, next question.

• 1:22:11Speaker 01

All right, we didn't fall behind.

• 1:22:12Speaker 05

  Not fall behind.

• 1:22:14Speaker 01

No. We need to hit a huge 3 to cut the lead to one.

• 1:22:18Speaker 05

  Huge trip, huge trip.

• 1:22:19Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:22:20Speaker 05

What is one thing that your partner actually uses AI for? Go.

• 1:22:29David Imel?

  Editing his videos.

• 1:22:32Speaker 01

I've answered this on the podcast already.

• 1:22:33Speaker 04

Yeah, am I allowed to guess?

• 1:22:34David Imel?

  You have?

• 1:22:35Speaker 04

  Nothing?

• 1:22:36Speaker 05

  Sure, yeah, that's enough.

• 1:22:37Speaker 01

I wish I could use my trip right now because I know this.

• 1:22:40Speaker 05

  Hmm.

• 1:22:41Speaker 01

  Damn.

• 1:22:43Speaker 05

Wait, why can't you use a trip?

• 1:22:45David Imel?

  Cause.

• 1:22:45Speaker 01

  Cause it's already used.

• 1:22:45Speaker 05

  Oh.

• 1:22:46Speaker 01

  Tried it already.

• 1:22:48David Imel?

I think I know this, I might not.

• 1:22:53Speaker 04

  No.

• 1:22:56David Imel?

Oh wait, I guess I didn't have to write it down. Okay, I wrote, well, I'm saying brainstorming.

• 1:23:04Speaker 05

  Marquez.

• 1:23:05David Imel?

  That is, does that count?

• 1:23:06Speaker 01

The second thing I use it for.

• 1:23:07David Imel?

  Oh, god.

• 1:23:08Speaker 01

The number one thing I use it for.

• 1:23:10David Imel?

  Use it for emails?

• 1:23:11Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:23:12David Imel?

You guys all looked at me like I had my head chopped off.

• 1:23:16Speaker 04

I hate when I get an email that was clearly written by AI.

• 1:23:19Speaker 01

That's why I make it unclear.

• 1:23:21Speaker 02

  Keep them guessing.

• 1:23:22Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:23:23Speaker 02

  Honestly, all of the emails.

• 1:23:25David Imel?

  Damn.

• 1:23:25Speaker 02

  AI talking to AI anymore.

• 1:23:27David Imel?

At least I didn't use my trip, you know what I'm saying?

• 1:23:29Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:23:29Speaker 01

  True.

• 1:23:31Speaker 04

  Mariah.

• 1:23:32David Imel?

  Be used for brainstorming.

• 1:23:32Speaker 01

You're not wrong, that's also what it, yeah.

• 1:23:34Speaker 04

My first instinct, Mariah, is that you wrote, you don't use it for anything, but I do know of one thing that you used it, you use it for occasionally, and I just don't know if you put it or not. Because it's so infrequent, which is when you had a pixel editing photos to make them funny in Slack. Like you did the one of you touching the ceiling and jumping really high.

• 1:23:56David Imel?

  Oh, yeah. That's funny.

• 1:23:59Speaker 04

But I don't think you did that. I think you wrote nothing.

• 1:24:04Speaker 02

I think nothing was my default, but then I realized I actually do use it only to compile lists. So I'll feed it like an image that I want it to turn into a list or a receipt, and I want it to break it down. And that's all I really use it for.

• 1:24:22Speaker 05

Wait, that's actually a really smart use case.

• 1:24:23Speaker 02

Yeah, I'm not gonna do the math. I don't wanna figure it out.

• 1:24:26David Imel?

  It's valid.

• 1:24:27Speaker 02

  Otherwise, nothing.

• 1:24:28Speaker 05

Okay. Well, score is still seven to three.

• 1:24:32Speaker 04

  Go.

• 1:24:32David Imel?

  Hmm.

• 1:24:33Speaker 01

  Lock in, lock in.

• 1:24:33Speaker 05

Who has their trips left? Only Marquez.

• 1:24:36David Imel?

Just me, I guess I gotta use it soon.

• 1:24:38Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 1:24:38Speaker 02

  How many questions are left?

• 1:24:40Speaker 05

  Um, I have.

• 1:24:41David Imel?

  Enough for us to win.

• 1:24:43Speaker 05

I have five questions left, but AI has like thirty pulled up, so.

• 1:24:47Speaker 01

  Okay, David.

• 1:24:48David Imel?

  Yeah, I'm ready.

• 1:24:49Speaker 01

  Lock.

• 1:24:49David Imel?

  Locked.

• 1:24:50Speaker 01

  The fuck?

• 1:24:51David Imel?

  I'm in.

• 1:24:52Speaker 01

  Locked and loaded.

• 1:24:53Speaker 05

Speaking of locking in, great segue, what is one sign that your partner? Is locked in and in the zone and should not be bothered.

• 1:25:02David Imel?

  Me?

• 1:25:04David Imel?

  So y'all are, they're answering?

• 1:25:05Speaker 04

I already forgot who was writing.

• 1:25:07Speaker 05

  Who just?

• 1:25:08David Imel?

Assigned, okay, yeah, I think that was a pretty clear one.

• 1:25:11Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 1:25:12David Imel?

Trying to think if there's any others.

• 1:25:16Speaker 05

Quick reminder, the only one with a trip is Marquez.

• 1:25:20David Imel?

I think I'm gonna use it.

• 1:25:21Speaker 01

  Really?

• 1:25:23Speaker 05

Damn, David, I think this trip thing might stick. I'm gonna start calling him that.

• 1:25:27Speaker 04

  Mike, baby with the trip?

• 1:25:28Speaker 05

  Yeah, why not?

• 1:25:30David Imel?

  Sure.

• 1:25:33Speaker 01

  Ellis is still writing?

• 1:25:34Speaker 04

Sorry, I, I, I wrote, tried to write a letter, but it looked like another letter and I didn't want the, yours to laugh at me.

• 1:25:41Speaker 05

  They're gonna do that anyway.

• 1:25:42Speaker 04

They, and I welcome it, man. I'm wearing a blue dog on my head, like, this is not.

• 1:25:49Speaker 05

  All right.

• 1:25:50David Imel?

  Should I go first?

• 1:25:50Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:25:52Speaker 01

  You're using.

• 1:25:52David Imel?

I'm using my, I'm using my confidence.

• 1:25:54Speaker 05

  Oh, snap.

• 1:25:54David Imel?

  My three.

• 1:25:55Speaker 05

  Okay. Using the trip.

• 1:25:56Speaker 01

I think when David's locked in, he's got his AirPods in. Don't interrupt what he's doing. He's, he's in the zone.

• 1:26:03Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 1:26:04David Imel?

It's just like my AirPods in?

• 1:26:05Speaker 01

He's got headphones on somehow, yeah.

• 1:26:07Speaker 05

  David?

• 1:26:08David Imel?

Uh, does this count? I can't hear you.

• 1:26:11Speaker 05

  The [__] does that mean?

• 1:26:13Speaker 01

What do you mean by that?

• 1:26:15David Imel?

Okay, you know when, okay, it's like when I'm locked in, right? I'm like, I'm working on something and I'm thinking really hard and someone's like, hey, David, David, David, and I can't hear them.

• 1:26:25Speaker 01

  Oh, okay, okay. It's headphones.

• 1:26:27David Imel?

  Well, some, sometimes.

• 1:26:30Speaker 01

  You, cuz you have headphones.

• 1:26:32Speaker 05

Your own partner is like, no.

• 1:26:34David Imel?

I can't hear you cuz I have headphones on.

• 1:26:36Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:26:37Speaker 02

I feel like that's close enough. I think that's fair.

• 1:26:39Speaker 01

  He's got metaphorical headphones on.

• 1:26:41David Imel?

  Yeah, brain headphones.

• 1:26:42Speaker 04

  Where's your competitive spirit?

• 1:26:43Speaker 05

For the sake of the game, I'll give it to him.

• 1:26:45David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:26:46Speaker 01

  That's nice, that's nice.

• 1:26:47Speaker 02

That was the most roundabout way of saying that, though.

• 1:26:49David Imel?

  Now it's six to seven.

• 1:26:50Speaker 05

  Ah.

• 1:26:52Speaker 04

Damn it. You better get this right. After, after selling our team out like that?

• 1:26:56Speaker 02

I think if you're at work here, I think the door is closed.

• 1:27:02Speaker 04

  Boom, baby, let's go!

• 1:27:05Speaker 02

  That's like the most obvious.

• 1:27:06Speaker 01

That seems like, that seemed like an Ellis question.

• 1:27:08Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:27:09Speaker 04

Give me some little reverb right now. Let's go!

• 1:27:15Speaker 05

Nice. I actually thought that that was.

• 1:27:17Speaker 01

  Long time.

• 1:27:18Speaker 05

Like Ellis's answer was obviously, if he's like in the audio room, door closed, whatever. I thought. The obvious other answer was you're wearing headphones. So I was like, this will be an easy point.

• 1:27:27Speaker 01

Yeah. So did I. You both got it.

• 1:27:31David Imel?

I wear headphones all the time. Like, I wear headphones like 80% of my waking life.

• 1:27:37Speaker 04

Wait, was that, was that Marcus's confidence answer?

• 1:27:39Speaker 05

That was. Yeah, so now it's eight to six.

• 1:27:41David Imel?

But he got it right. He got it right, though.

• 1:27:43Speaker 02

  It's okay, we're still winning.

• 1:27:43Speaker 05

  Yeah, you're winning by two.

• 1:27:45David Imel?

  By two.

• 1:27:46Speaker 05

  Alright. Alright.

• 1:27:47David Imel?

  Alright.

• 1:27:47Speaker 05

The score is eight to six.

• 1:27:48David Imel?

  Alright.

• 1:27:49Speaker 05

How many more questions do you guys want?

• 1:27:50David Imel?

  Enough for us to win.

• 1:27:52Speaker 05

  So three?

• 1:27:52David Imel?

  Three.

• 1:27:53Speaker 05

  Three more questions?

• 1:27:54David Imel?

  Three more questions.

• 1:27:55Speaker 05

  Alright, three more questions.

• 1:27:57Speaker 04

If you miss one, it's game over.

• 1:27:58Speaker 05

Yeah, can't miss. It's a game winning three.

• 1:28:01David Imel?

We gotta get perfect score, lock the.

• 1:28:03Speaker 05

  Game winning trip.

• 1:28:05David Imel?

  Lock in. Game winning trip.

• 1:28:06Speaker 04

  Mike Bibby.

• 1:28:07David Imel?

  Mike Bibby.

• 1:28:08Speaker 04

As they say in the league, Bibby style.

• 1:28:10David Imel?

  Bibby style.

• 1:28:11Speaker 05

  Bibby style.

• 1:28:12David Imel?

  Alright, Bibby bubble head.

• 1:28:13Speaker 04

Do you think Mike Bibby listens to this podcast?

• 1:28:15Speaker 05

God, I hope so, cuz he used to be one of my favorite players.

• 1:28:19Speaker 04

  Yeah, he's lit.

• 1:28:19Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:28:20David Imel?

Just like Slavakovich or whatever his name is.

• 1:28:22Speaker 05

Stojakovic. Nice, nice. Look at you, David. I'm so proud of you.

• 1:28:25David Imel?

Hey, man. I was, I was, I was.

• 1:28:28Speaker 05

  David knows ball.

• 1:28:29David Imel?

  I live near Sacramento.

• 1:28:31Speaker 05

Near. Alright. What is the screen time on your partner's phone right now?

• 1:28:37David Imel?

  Screen for the day.

• 1:28:38Speaker 04

  Delta, close going over.

• 1:28:40Speaker 05

We'll do Delta with this one.

• 1:28:41David Imel?

  Which phone?

• 1:28:44Speaker 05

What would you consider is your primary phone?

• 1:28:46Speaker 01

  The one plus 15.

• 1:28:47Speaker 04

I have, I have one more question. Is it listed as a decimal, like?

• 1:28:51Speaker 05

Like, point blank hours? It's hours and 15. Hours and minutes.

• 1:28:54David Imel?

  Hours and.

• 1:28:59Speaker 04

Is it listed an hour and 15 increments?

• 1:29:02Speaker 05

In my head, I was just picturing like eight hours and 15 minutes. So I said 15. Clearly wrong.

• 1:29:07David Imel?

  Time today.

• 1:29:08Speaker 05

  Yeah, screen time today.

• 1:29:09Speaker 04

  Oh, thus far today?

• 1:29:11Speaker 05

  Like thus far today, yeah.

• 1:29:12David Imel?

  Today.

• 1:29:14Speaker 02

Mind you, what time is it? Is it?

• 1:29:16Speaker 05

It is now 12:53 in the PM.

• 1:29:18David Imel?

  Alright, I'm gonna guess.

• 1:29:21David Imel?

  One hour, 15 minutes.

• 1:29:23Speaker 05

One hour and 15 minutes. Marquez.

• 1:29:25Speaker 04

  I think you're under.

• 1:29:26Speaker 05

  Ooh, 13 minutes off.

• 1:29:28Speaker 04

  Oh, no.

• 1:29:29Speaker 05

Marquez put one hour and 28 minutes.

• 1:29:31David Imel?

  Let's go.

• 1:29:31Speaker 05

  So you're 13 minutes off.

• 1:29:32David Imel?

  We're locked in.

• 1:29:33Speaker 05

  All right.

• 1:29:34David Imel?

That's about as close as I think you're gonna be.

• 1:29:35Speaker 05

Can Mariah and Ellis beat this?

• 1:29:38Speaker 04

I'm gonna try to live my day in the world of Mariah.

• 1:29:40Speaker 02

  I think like this.

• 1:29:42Speaker 04

And take a wild guess, right? I think.

• 1:29:43David Imel?

  It's like 12:54, Mariah's like 12 hours 54?

• 1:29:47Speaker 04

I think Mariah wakes up unbelievably early due to the horrors. I think Mariah is confronted by the horrors.

• 1:29:55David Imel?

  It's a fair guess.

• 1:29:56Speaker 02

  The screens.

• 1:29:56Speaker 04

Yeah, almost immediately and resolves this by going on her phone. I think this begins at approximately.

• 1:30:05David Imel?

  10 a.m.

• 1:30:07Speaker 02

  That's when work starts.

• 1:30:08Speaker 04

Mariah. I think thus far today.

• 1:30:15Speaker 04

Does, does driving apps count as screen on time?

• 1:30:18David Imel?

  Yeah, it does.

• 1:30:19Speaker 05

  It does?

• 1:30:19David Imel?

  It takes into account.

• 1:30:20Speaker 05

  Our play, however, does not.

• 1:30:22Speaker 04

I think you've used your phone for two hours. Oh, man, I'm already wrong. Two hours and 27 minutes.

• 1:30:31Speaker 02

Okay. So I have to preface this with, I have switched to the S24 Ultra. It does fun things, fun things that punish you. And that means that when you plug in your phone, you can have it show little picture slideshows. How cute. When you plug it in overnight, it counts as a screen time.

• 1:30:53Speaker 05

Really? Because of the screen? Did they even test this?

• 1:30:55Speaker 02

And so I'll wake up and it'll say 10 hours of screen time. I'm like, that's crazy. I've been unconscious. And so today it decided that I have had five hours and nine minutes of screen time.

• 1:31:07Speaker 05

  Wow.

• 1:31:08Speaker 02

Which means it didn't even show pictures all night long. So what's the point?

• 1:31:12David Imel?

I think we should, you should be a professional phone reviewer, Muran. You're actually finding the crazy.

• 1:31:17Speaker 05

  Yeah, that was good.

• 1:31:18Speaker 02

  This was a huge problem.

• 1:31:20Speaker 05

Well, that point goes to Marquez and David.

• 1:31:23Speaker 02

Sorry, this, this, we were doomed from this one.

• 1:31:26David Imel?

We only need two more points and we need two more points.

• 1:31:28Speaker 04

They just need to miss a one question.

• 1:31:30David Imel?

It is not enough, it is not enough that we just need to make one question and we tie.

• 1:31:34Speaker 04

  Yeah, I know.

• 1:31:35David Imel?

In which case, we got a shot.

• 1:31:38Speaker 04

  Oh my god.

• 1:31:39David Imel?

  It's game seven.

• 1:31:40Speaker 04

  Oh, I've been here before.

• 1:31:41Speaker 05

  Game seven.

• 1:31:42David Imel?

  Alright.

• 1:31:43Speaker 02

Yeah, it said on Sunday, I had 11 and a half hours of screen time.

• 1:31:46David Imel?

  Damn.

• 1:31:47Speaker 02

And half of that's from the Google Photos.

• 1:31:48David Imel?

  11 and a half hours, wow, that's a lot.

• 1:31:51Speaker 05

That's wild. Okay, next question. For the tie, or to pull away, how many unread emails are in your partner's main inbox right now?

• 1:32:02David Imel?

  Marquez's?

• 1:32:03Speaker 05

  Yep.

• 1:32:04Speaker 01

  Oh my, no, it's yours.

• 1:32:05David Imel?

  It's mine?

• 1:32:06Speaker 04

You're talking about like personal emails?

• 1:32:07Speaker 01

We just answered, not your answer.

• 1:32:08Speaker 04

  Or work email.

• 1:32:09Speaker 01

So how many emails are in your inbox?

• 1:32:11David Imel?

  My main email.

• 1:32:12Speaker 05

  Main, yeah.

• 1:32:13Speaker 01

  Unread emails.

• 1:32:15Speaker 05

Cause I know David has like the all inbox features with like a thousand. Yeah, you're supposed to look, yeah.

• 1:32:19David Imel?

By main, you mean my like, my professional one, right?

• 1:32:22Speaker 04

It just says main 99 plus.

• 1:32:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:32:24David Imel?

Like, main isn't professional, not like my high school, I use for spam, right?

• 1:32:28Speaker 02

On desktop, I think you can see the full number.

• 1:32:31Speaker 04

I'm just gonna go by the number that's on my iOS icon red.

• 1:32:36Speaker 05

  Okay, yeah.

• 1:32:36David Imel?

Wait, should I do that too?

• 1:32:37Speaker 05

  Sure.

• 1:32:38David Imel?

But that's also got my spam email in it.

• 1:32:40Speaker 05

Okay, fine, screw it, let's do that.

• 1:32:41David Imel?

  Should we do it?

• 1:32:42Speaker 05

  Yeah, why not?

• 1:32:42Speaker 04

Just do, just do the number on your home screen.

• 1:32:43Speaker 05

  Do it all.

• 1:32:44Speaker 01

Alright, it's really important. Is this, is this?

• 1:32:48Speaker 05

We'll do delta with this one, we'll do delta. No, wait, that's gonna be crazy. Okay, closest without going over. I don't wanna do math.

• 1:32:54David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:32:54Speaker 05

  Closest without going over.

• 1:32:55David Imel?

  Okay, closest without going over.

• 1:32:58David Imel?

I feel like you have commas in your number.

• 1:33:03Speaker 02

  Oh man.

• 1:33:07Speaker 04

We are the worst. To be fair, I really try to make this better every week and it never gets better.

• 1:33:16Speaker 02

  It doesn't matter. It compounds.

• 1:33:18Speaker 04

  It does.

• 1:33:19David Imel?

  It's okay.

• 1:33:20Speaker 05

  All right.

• 1:33:21Speaker 02

I, these numbers are terrible. They're gonna be atrocious.

• 1:33:27Speaker 02

Is this like your oldest email you've?

• 1:33:29David Imel?

This is like the Gmail icon on your home screen. So it counts for all of your emails.

• 1:33:33Speaker 02

Oh, it like compounds all of them.

• 1:33:35David Imel?

  I think so, yeah.

• 1:33:38Speaker 02

This number is in the thousands. This is thousands of emails.

• 1:33:41Speaker 04

I can't speak. I'm not gonna make any faces. I just want you to dig deep into your heart and give me the perfect number, Mariah.

• 1:33:48Speaker 02

I think this has to be.

• 1:33:51Speaker 04

  But don't go over.

• 1:33:53David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:33:54Speaker 02

At least, I'm gonna say a round number, 10,000.

• 1:33:58Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 1:33:59David Imel?

  10,000.

• 1:34:00Speaker 04

  Mariah, go to the answer.

• 1:34:02Speaker 05

  Whoa. Crap. What's the answer?

• 1:34:05Speaker 04

  The answer is 10,097.

• 1:34:06David Imel?

  That's so close.

• 1:34:07Speaker 02

How many emails, like, accounts do you have?

• 1:34:09David Imel?

Wait, is this disturbing? This is closest we've gone over but not Delta, right?

• 1:34:13Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:34:13Speaker 01

I have to get within 97 of your number without going over.

• 1:34:16Speaker 04

  Or the game is over.

• 1:34:17Speaker 05

  Oof. No pressure, Marquez.

• 1:34:19Speaker 04

This is your, we're asking you to make a double coverage logo three. It's game time.

• 1:34:22Speaker 01

And David's, without question, a ridiculous number.

• 1:34:27Speaker 05

  But how ridiculous?

• 1:34:29Speaker 02

It's more than that, if I had to guess.

• 1:34:30Speaker 01

  I do think so.

• 1:34:32Speaker 04

They did sit next to each other for a long time.

• 1:34:33Speaker 01

There's for sure a comma in there. David asked about.

• 1:34:37Speaker 04

  Oh, true.

• 1:34:38Speaker 01

The icon and the spam email and all kinds of other stuff. So I'm going with like a, almost an Olivia-like number here.

• 1:34:47Speaker 01

I think you have like, let's go with 34,006.

• 1:34:53Speaker 02

  Can it go that high?

• 1:34:54Speaker 05

I'm sure. We're about to find out.

• 1:34:56David Imel?

  No, I have 11,00927.

• 1:35:01Speaker 05

That means. Mariah and Ellis win the game.

• 1:35:09Speaker 01

  Well played.

• 1:35:10David Imel?

  Alright.

• 1:35:10Speaker 04

  Wow, that was good.

• 1:35:11Speaker 01

That's an incredible snipe, 10,000 emails. That was really good.

• 1:35:13David Imel?

  That was crazy.

• 1:35:14Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:35:15Speaker 02

  It feels appropriate.

• 1:35:16David Imel?

You know how they say if you have 10,000 hours in something, you're a master? Ellis is a master.

• 1:35:21Speaker 01

How many unread emails do you think I have right now?

• 1:35:23Speaker 02

  I don't know, like, one.

• 1:35:24David Imel?

Yeah, I was excited to guess for you. I know the answer. It's probably one or two. It's zero.

• 1:35:30Speaker 01

During, it'll be how many I got.

• 1:35:31David Imel?

  During the podcast.

• 1:35:32Speaker 02

He's swearing it during the podcast.

• 1:35:33David Imel?

  Eighteen.

• 1:35:34Speaker 01

  As we've sat here.

• 1:35:35David Imel?

If I got to guess for Marquez, it would have been incredible. We would have gotten the point. But yeah, there's really no knowing how many emails I have at the given time. Thirteen? Thirteen?

• 1:35:45Speaker 02

That's a lot, for the past like a half hour.

• 1:35:47Speaker 04

  Put it together, bro!

• 1:35:48Speaker 01

  Just sitting here, yeah.

• 1:35:49David Imel?

  That's crazy.

• 1:35:50Speaker 01

  Not bad.

• 1:35:51Speaker 04

Alright, well, we're gonna take it to ad break while Mariah and I high-five a few times, and then, um, we'll be back.

• 1:35:59David Imel?

Well, we gotta do trivia questions, right?

• 1:36:01Speaker 04

  Oh my god, I forgot.

• 1:36:02David Imel?

Oh yeah. Do we do them from here?

• 1:36:04Speaker 04

Uh, yeah, because I have my question memorized, because I'm a freaking-

• 1:36:06David Imel?

Because he's about to be a beast.

• 1:36:08Speaker 01

I just with a trivia question.

• 1:36:13David Imel?

I love that. That might be my favorite one. That's so good.

• 1:36:17Speaker 04

  Guys.

• 1:36:17David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:36:20Speaker 04

  Guys.

• 1:36:21David Imel?

  Yep.

• 1:36:22Speaker 04

We're all excited for the Pixelbook Glow, because it has lights on the outside.

• 1:36:25David Imel?

  That's right.

• 1:36:26Speaker 04

But I don't know if you remember, back in the day, MacBook also had some lights on the outside.

• 1:36:31David Imel?

  Talked about it last week.

• 1:36:32Speaker 04

Real dorks will remember. That the light on the outside of the MacBook, that glowing logo, was not actually a dedicated component. What component, already present in the laptop, was used to illuminate the logo?

• 1:36:46Speaker 01

Oh, it's a good trivia question.

• 1:36:47Speaker 04

Thank you. Cool. Um, Grok context, please? Oh, Mariah, you will be answering for Andrew, yes, this week.

• 1:36:56Speaker 02

  I'm so sorry, Andrew.

• 1:36:57Speaker 04

What's it called in The Hunger Games? When they're like-

• 1:37:00David Imel?

  Tribute?

• 1:37:02Speaker 04

Is that what, no, maybe I'm thinking of someone else. When you have to go, you're champion, you are Andrew's champion. How did I get the Hunger Games and Dune next time?

• 1:37:08David Imel?

  Same vibe.

• 1:37:09Speaker 04

  Hit the boo button.

• 1:37:12Speaker 01

Nice. Well, the answers will be at the end, like usual. We'll be right back.

• 1:37:25Speaker 01

Support for the show comes from Jira by Atlassian. So AI is only as useful as the context it has to work from. But when that context is scattered across tools like threads and DMs, that means your team and your AI agents end up flying kind of blind. That's the problem Jira solves. What's the gold tied to your project? What got decided last week in Slack? Atlassian's teamwork graph pulls all of these pieces together from Jira, Confluence, Slack, GitHub, and more, so nothing falls through the cracks.

• 1:39:36David Imel?

Welcome back. There's a post on our subreddit that I want to address.

• 1:39:40Speaker 02

  No, David.

• 1:39:42David Imel?

It says, okay, there's a post that says,

• 1:39:46David Imel?

which people do you think hate each other on Waveform? We all love each other, guys.

• 1:39:50Speaker 04

  Yeah, it's not like that.

• 1:39:51David Imel?

Like, I, like, the post said that Ellis and I hate each other, which is crazy.

• 1:39:57Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:39:57David Imel?

Because I would, we would kiss in the Vision Pro if we could. We only have one.

• 1:40:01Speaker 04

Literally every Wednesday, David and I get Chinese food for breakfast together and drive to work. It's, it's not like that. Shut up, bitch!

• 1:40:08David Imel?

So I just wanted to say that everyone here loves each other deeply. It's good.

• 1:40:12Speaker 01

  That's very good.

• 1:40:13Speaker 04

  Oh, my God.

• 1:40:14David Imel?

  Exactly.

• 1:40:15Speaker 04

Adam loves that new button so much.

• 1:40:17David Imel?

  It's so good.

• 1:40:17Speaker 01

You gotta chill with that button.

• 1:40:19David Imel?

Yeah, so, yeah, there wasn't a lot of news this week.

• 1:40:23Speaker 05

Yes, but people did tag me in something that I had no idea what was going on. And I was like, what are you talking about? And then I figured that I would ask David here on the pod, because I have him here in the pod, to talk about your picture going viral.

• 1:40:36David Imel?

So I saw your tweet. Okay. Well, okay, I saw it on Twitter and Threads. Yeah. I first saw it quote tweeted on Twitter. So someone else tweeted it on my timeline. And then I saw that I'd clicked in and it had like 10,000 retweets or something. Yeah. And then I saw, I opened up Threads and I saw it on Threads too, from you this time. And it had, I think, 8,000 likes on Threads. Yeah, yeah. So it's a certified banger. What is the post?

• 1:41:01Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:41:02David Imel?

  And what happened?

• 1:41:03Speaker 05

  And where were you?

• 1:41:04David Imel?

I just want to ask, do you guys know what a visual metaphor is?

• 1:41:07Speaker 05

  No.

• 1:41:08David Imel?

  Yes.

• 1:41:08Speaker 05

No, not on the internet. Those don't exist.

• 1:41:10David Imel?

Can you describe a visual metaphor, Marquez?

• 1:41:12Speaker 01

Well, a simile is when you compare things using the word like. And a metaphor is when you compare things without using the word like.

• 1:41:18David Imel?

  Wow.

• 1:41:18Speaker 01

So instead of saying, this car is like a boat, I would say, this car is a boat.

• 1:41:25Speaker 01

Anyway, a visual metaphor is comparing things visually without using any.

• 1:41:30David Imel?

This is kind of like this language.

• 1:41:32Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:41:33David Imel?

  Okay.

• 1:41:33Speaker 01

Is that what your post was?

• 1:41:34David Imel?

Okay, so I just want to give you some cut. Yes. Okay, so.

• 1:41:37Speaker 01

  Sick.

• 1:41:38David Imel?

Uh, last Saturday, I walked twenty nine thousand steps because it was a really nice day.

• 1:41:44Speaker 05

  Weird flex, but okay.

• 1:41:45David Imel?

Some. Just gotta let you know.

• 1:41:46Speaker 02

  I respect it.

• 1:41:46David Imel?

I'm still in pain. So, anyway, I got to my destination, but I overshot it by a little bit. There was a little park there, so I sat in the park and it's classic New York, beautiful, like, late afternoon, sun setting park. Uh, in New York, there are these chess tables where there are tables that have like a chessboard like embedded in the stone table. You know, iconic New York situation, right? And I was sitting there and I saw this guy sitting on his chess tables with his laptop like in his lap, playing chess on like a chess.

• 1:42:21Speaker 01

  Like chess.com.

• 1:42:22David Imel?

Website. Yeah, chess.com, like on the chess table with no one across from him. And I was just like, visual metaphor, right?

• 1:42:32Speaker 05

This is the photographer's eye you've trained for years.

• 1:42:35David Imel?

So I used my iPhone Air at six X zoom.

• 1:42:39Speaker 02

  From very far away.

• 1:42:40David Imel?

Which was really bad, uh, but it's what I had on me and I took a photo. I made sure to like.

• 1:42:46Speaker 05

Davey, you know what they say about the camera you have on you?

• 1:42:48David Imel?

It's the worst. The worst. Uh, you know, I made sure to crop out any identifying features about him. I only had like his hands with the laptop. So you could see the screen that was the chess app or the chess website with the chessboard. And I made sure to shoot it from high enough down so you could see the, the chessboard, the, on the table. Anyway, I was just like, I just put it on social media. I said twenty twenty six.

• 1:43:12Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:43:13David Imel?

Because it represents, it's a visual metaphor because it represents the fact that we are no longer playing things in front of each other, doing connection in front of each other. Now, everything you do is online and you're connecting with strangers that you don't really know.

• 1:43:26Speaker 05

Metaphors hit a lot harder when you explain them.

• 1:43:29David Imel?

I mean, apparently I have to. This is what, okay, this is what.

• 1:43:33Speaker 02

  What's the beef?

• 1:43:34David Imel?

Most of their quote tweets and the replies and everything were just like, well, who is he supposed to play with? There was no one on the other side. I was like, yes, that is the entire point.

• 1:43:46Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:43:47David Imel?

That's what makes it a good. And there were people that were like, don't judge, don't judge strangers. And I was like, I'm not judging him.

• 1:43:54Speaker 05

  They're judging them.

• 1:43:55David Imel?

  It's a, it's a visual metaphor for our society.

• 1:43:58Speaker 04

  Your caption was 2026.

• 1:43:59David Imel?

  That's all the caption was.

• 1:44:00Speaker 04

It's a, it's clearly saying like, this picture represents this year.

• 1:44:04David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:44:05Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:44:05David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:44:06Speaker 02

I do see how this could be threads rage bait. I'm not gonna lie.

• 1:44:09Speaker 05

  Ooh, talk about it, Mariah.

• 1:44:11David Imel?

  Rage bait?

• 1:44:12Speaker 05

  Talk about it.

• 1:44:13Speaker 02

Some threads that are just kinda like, look at this thing.

• 1:44:16David Imel?

Yeah, but I didn't say, look at this guy. What a loser playing chess by himself.

• 1:44:20Speaker 02

You know what I mean? Like, it's, it's something generic enough. It hits a mainstream audience and then there's no, nothing to guide the interpretation. So it's just open to what anyone thinks of the picture.

• 1:44:31David Imel?

The problem with all algorithmic social media.

• 1:44:34Speaker 02

  You disagree?

• 1:44:36David Imel?

What? No, I want your take. I want your take.

• 1:44:38Speaker 04

Well, no, I disagree with Mariah.

• 1:44:39David Imel?

  Oh.

• 1:44:40Speaker 04

I think, I think, ah, man, I don't want to insult people.

• 1:44:45David Imel?

Yeah, look at these comments. It's almost as if he needs another person to play chess. Yes.

• 1:44:50Speaker 02

They're taking a literal interpretation of it.

• 1:44:52David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:44:52Speaker 02

And they're not understanding the visual metaphor.

• 1:44:54Speaker 04

I think this screams that, you know, we talk about like media literacy being in crisis. Like, to me, this is like a slam dunk of, of literacy. Like, like it couldn't, it could, it's like the, if we lost the ability to process like symbolism.

• 1:45:09David Imel?

  Yeah. Yeah.

• 1:45:11Speaker 04

  What?

• 1:45:12David Imel?

Like, social media just flattens everything to.

• 1:45:14Speaker 05

Which to Mariah's point is the mainstream, like, once it hits that mainstream audience, you lose all of that.

• 1:45:19David Imel?

  You lose nuance.

• 1:45:20Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:45:21Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:45:21Speaker 02

And you get like Karen from Ohio.

• 1:45:23Speaker 05

  Like, I think.

• 1:45:23Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:45:24Speaker 02

  Where's the other person?

• 1:45:25Speaker 04

  But that's, that's a problem.

• 1:45:27Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:45:27Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:45:28Speaker 04

  That's like a big, that's a big problem.

• 1:45:29Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:45:30Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:45:31Speaker 05

That's why it was such a beautiful post. And thank you for people tagging me, telling me to talk about it.

• 1:45:35Speaker 02

Yeah, it seems like it started a conversation, good or bad. So I think that's probably the most interesting part of it.

• 1:45:41David Imel?

Yeah, it hit the Twitter number one what's happening today thing. Someone sent me a screenshot of that. You know what's super funny too, is the amount of people that like acquaintances that I have that sent me like meme compilation pages that just stole the post and like removed my name.

• 1:45:57Speaker 05

So I was gonna say, that's how I first saw the picture, was someone just posted your picture.

• 1:46:02David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:46:02Speaker 05

And like had a caption like, this is what's wrong with twenty. And I was like, okay, scroll right by, whatever. And then I saw yours. And I was like, wait a second.

• 1:46:08David Imel?

Yeah. This is David's picture. Yeah, so. He tweeted this six years ago. Now I know what it feels, yeah, exactly. Now I know what it feels like to have someone just rip your content and make, put it on meme pages and stuff. Yeah. But I've had a ton of people send me like various meme pages that just, it's like, whatever. Marquez has no experience with that. Not at all.

• 1:46:27Speaker 01

I was gonna say, welcome to the life cycle of a viral social media post.

• 1:46:31David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:46:31Speaker 01

It will be stripped of its context and redigested by every other commentator in their own angle.

• 1:46:38David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:46:38Speaker 01

And there is nothing you can do about it.

• 1:46:40David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:46:40Speaker 01

The thing about social media that I, that I think sometimes is interesting, okay, I had a conversation, this is an off camera, off kilter, random conversation I had with a YouTube engineer about features that they could add or not add to YouTube.

• 1:46:54David Imel?

  Okay.

• 1:46:55Speaker 01

And they told me, you know, in a few words, that they tend to be pretty minimal with the features that they add or don't add, and algorithmically, they could make big changes, but they tend not to. And they let people's algorithms reflect them. Like, they could choose to push certain things, or, or even remove certain things from the algorithm because it would be better for society in their own judgment. But the second you make a judgment and influence it, then slippery slope, you have to judge a whole bunch of other things.

• 1:47:25David Imel?

There's also all the Section 230 problems that come along with that.

• 1:47:28Speaker 01

So his, his basic stance was like, YouTube is like, it's so dense with media and so many people and so much stuff, that it's kind of just like a mirror of society.

• 1:47:37David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:47:37Speaker 01

And all the good and all the bad. And when a post goes viral, it's like unnaturally exposing your art to the whole world. Usually it doesn't work that way. Usually you expose it to the audience it's designed for.

• 1:47:51David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:47:51Speaker 01

And that's it. But on social media, you can sometimes expose it to the entire world, which comes with all of the interesting, positive interpretations, and then all of the random people who were never meant to see this, who have all sorts of nonsensical things to say about it.

• 1:48:05David Imel?

  Right.

• 1:48:06Speaker 01

And, yeah, that happens all the time.

• 1:48:08David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:48:09Speaker 01

Well, it's kind of a bummer when.

• 1:48:10David Imel?

There's even like, when it's stripped of, there's even, there's things like cultural context, right? Like, when, when you're shown to the entire world on a. Platform.

• 1:48:19Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:48:19David Imel?

All of the context is just like, you're gonna be shown to people who just do not understand what you're trying to say, or like.

• 1:48:25Speaker 05

The target demographic is no longer the only audience of that.

• 1:48:29David Imel?

Yeah, so I don't know, I don't even care about the, you know, the meme pages stealing it and stuff. I just thought it funny that like multiple people that I know sent it to me. But it's more, I was more frustrated by like 80% of the replies and quote tweets, just like, a lot of them, I think they did understand the visual metaphor, but they were rage baiting by quote tweeting and being like, what a dumbass. I just.

• 1:48:53Speaker 05

That's also how people get likes themselves.

• 1:48:56David Imel?

  I know.

• 1:48:57Speaker 05

  Hop onto the thing that's.

• 1:48:58David Imel?

There's a, there's a guy that quote cheated me and he was very nice. He said, this photo deserves a Pulitzer.

• 1:49:03Speaker 05

  Ooh.

• 1:49:04David Imel?

And his, his quote tweet got like almost as many likes as the post. And then I saw him post later like, wow, my posted numbers. I was like, you didn't make a post. You just quote tweeted my post.

• 1:49:18Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:49:18David Imel?

What is social media anymore? It's like, it's just like big competition.

• 1:49:22Speaker 02

It's hard because it, it makes me like kind of not want to engage and interact on platforms.

• 1:49:28David Imel?

I, I've been thinking about this so much for the last couple of years, like I'm less and less inclined to say anything on social media anymore because it feels like the incentive structures are all leaning towards people having opposing opinions to you.

• 1:49:44Speaker 05

Most inflammatory possible response will be rewarded the most.

• 1:49:49David Imel?

Yeah, exactly, exactly. And so like having any opinion or posting anything, people are just gonna come for you. And it's like, why am I even putting this out into the world if I'm just inviting people to scream at me?

• 1:50:00Speaker 05

I'm gonna clip that, put it on TikTok.

• 1:50:02David Imel?

  Good.

• 1:50:03Speaker 02

Then I'm gonna repost it after you do.

• 1:50:05David Imel?

We live in the clip economy now, baby.

• 1:50:07Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:50:07David Imel?

  So, anyway.

• 1:50:09Speaker 05

David, thank you for explaining that to me because I had no idea what they were talking about until they tagged me in it.

• 1:50:14Speaker 02

  Thank you for your service.

• 1:50:15Speaker 05

Thank you for your service to the world.

• 1:50:16David Imel?

  You're welcome.

• 1:50:17Speaker 05

It deserves a Pulitzer. All right, on to trivia.

• 1:50:24David Imel?

This is my new trivia starting gesture.

• 1:50:27Speaker 02

  That's also the timeout.

• 1:50:28Speaker 05

  The timeout gesture.

• 1:50:29David Imel?

  This is the technical foul.

• 1:50:31Speaker 04

I was gonna say like, I just feel like you're giving me a tech.

• 1:50:36David Imel?

  Ellis. Trivia time.

• 1:50:38Speaker 01

If you can call it a tech, you should be able to call it a trip, just saying.

• 1:50:40David Imel?

  Got him.

• 1:50:41Speaker 01

  That's...

• 1:50:42Speaker 05

I like it. I'm on board with this trip whole situation. This whole trip situation. Alright, question number one. Chromebook Pixel came out in 2013. This is Mariah's first time hearing this question, so you have to answer for Andrew.

• 1:50:54Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:50:55Speaker 05

What was the size of the screen closest without going over?

• 1:51:00Speaker 02

  Of which device?

• 1:51:01Speaker 05

The Chromebook Pixel that came out in 2013 was a laptop.

• 1:51:06Speaker 05

  A Chromebook.

• 1:51:06Speaker 04

  I wasn't born yet.

• 1:51:07Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:51:10Speaker 05

Ellis only came on live in 2014.

• 1:51:15David Imel?

That wasn't the one with the light bars, was it?

• 1:51:17Speaker 05

  It was.

• 1:51:17David Imel?

Oh, shoot. I didn't have that one. I had the one that folded in half, that like folded over itself. The Pixel Book. I had the Pixel Book.

• 1:51:27Speaker 05

  Oh, yeah. Chromebook Pixel. OG.

• 1:51:29Speaker 04

  Yep.

• 1:51:30David Imel?

  The CR48?

• 1:51:31Speaker 05

  CR47?

• 1:51:32David Imel?

  That was OG.

• 1:51:33Speaker 05

One of them. I don't know.

• 1:51:34David Imel?

Oh, but he's talking about the first premium one.

• 1:51:36Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:51:36David Imel?

  Okay.

• 1:51:37Speaker 01

That was 9999. Matte black, unbranded with a light bar. It was sick.

• 1:51:41David Imel?

  Had a light bar?

• 1:51:42Speaker 01

Or maybe not a light bar.

• 1:51:42David Imel?

That was... I think the premium one had the light bar.

• 1:51:44Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:51:45David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:51:45Speaker 05

Alright, flip him and read. What do we got?

• 1:51:49David Imel?

  We have a resolution.

• 1:51:50Speaker 01

  All over the praise.

• 1:51:51Speaker 05

Alright, who wants to go first?

• 1:51:53David Imel?

  Uh, I wrote 12 inches.

• 1:51:55Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 1:51:56Speaker 01

  I said 14.

• 1:51:57Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 1:51:58Speaker 02

I was thinking Chromebook size, so I said like 10?

• 1:52:01Speaker 05

  Alright, the winner.

• 1:52:02Speaker 02

  It's not a standard size.

• 1:52:02David Imel?

  Wait, what about Ellis?

• 1:52:04Speaker 05

  No, Ellis is...

• 1:52:05Speaker 04

  What about Ellis?

• 1:52:05David Imel?

  Oh, right, right. Trivia master.

• 1:52:09David Imel?

I was just thinking about you, you know?

• 1:52:11Speaker 05

  As always.

• 1:52:11David Imel?

Because I, because I love you.

• 1:52:13Speaker 04

  I love you too.

• 1:52:14Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 1:52:15Speaker 04

I'm teeing you up with a...

• 1:52:17Speaker 05

I thought it was like 13 points. That can't happen when it's supposed to.

• 1:52:22Speaker 05

  It's funnier out of context.

• 1:52:25Speaker 01

  I'm afraid that it's between 12 and 14.

• 1:52:28Speaker 02

Wait, so what size is it?

• 1:52:30Speaker 05

  It is.

• 1:52:31Speaker 04

  Come on, baby.

• 1:52:32Speaker 01

  14.2.

• 1:52:33Speaker 04

  12.2.

• 1:52:35Speaker 05

  12.85.

• 1:52:36Speaker 04

  No, let's go.

• 1:52:38Speaker 05

  David gets the point.

• 1:52:38Speaker 02

  I almost said 12.

• 1:52:40Speaker 01

Damn. I forgot laptops used to be smaller.

• 1:52:42Speaker 05

  Yeah, little babies.

• 1:52:43Speaker 01

All right. Should've accounted for inflation there. Netbooks. That uses EEE PC. I had one of those.

• 1:53:00Speaker 01

  It's so good.

• 1:53:01Speaker 04

I can't believe, you know, I put that button there. I was like, I don't think we're gonna use that.

• 1:53:04Speaker 01

  It's so good. All right.

• 1:53:07Speaker 04

  Guys.

• 1:53:11Speaker 04

What made the logo on the back of the old MacBook Pros glow?

• 1:53:19Speaker 05

  Closest without going over.

• 1:53:21Speaker 01

  The CPU.

• 1:53:22Speaker 04

  The CPU.

• 1:53:24Speaker 01

  Technically, it powered it.

• 1:53:26Speaker 02

Who's to say, really? Does anything in the computer?

• 1:53:34Speaker 01

  God.

• 1:53:36Speaker 02

  Andrew, come back.

• 1:53:38Speaker 05

  It's all computer.

• 1:53:39Speaker 04

  Everything's computer.

• 1:53:41Speaker 02

  They're part of a PC.

• 1:53:41Speaker 04

  Everything's computer. It's beautiful.

• 1:53:45Speaker 05

All right. I also don't know the answer to this, so I'm gonna wait. Yeah, I'm gonna wait on.

• 1:53:49Speaker 01

This is one of those perfectly structured trivia questions where I don't know the answer, but because of the way it's formatted, I learned the answer and I'm pretty sure I'm right.

• 1:54:00Speaker 04

Cool. All right. I, cool. I thought this would be more of a layup.

• 1:54:05Speaker 05

  I have a guess. I just don't know.

• 1:54:06Speaker 04

Yeah, let's see it. David, you put?

• 1:54:09Speaker 01

  I wrote the LCD.

• 1:54:10Speaker 04

  Uh, Marquez, you put?

• 1:54:12Speaker 01

  The LCD backlight.

• 1:54:13Speaker 04

  Right, you put?

• 1:54:14Speaker 02

I put display, but I meant also LCD. Or God?

• 1:54:17Speaker 04

  I need a consult.

• 1:54:19Speaker 01

Display or God? I think LCD.

• 1:54:20Speaker 04

The way, so the way, the way an LCD screen works, for those who don't know, is you have these, these, I believe they're.

• 1:54:29Speaker 05

  Light emitting diodes?

• 1:54:31Speaker 04

No, LCD. So you have these, you have these like liquid crystal. I think they're based on like quartz, these structures, and they, they can twist, right? When you run current through them, they have the ability to twist. And when they twist certain ways, they can block light. When they twist other ways, they, they don't block light.

• 1:54:44Speaker 01

  Liquid crystal.

• 1:54:45Speaker 04

So what you do is you put a big light behind that called a backlight.

• 1:54:48Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:54:49Speaker 04

And then each crystal will twist and untwist and that's what, you know, blocks the light and creates different pixel colors, brightnesses, whatever. So the way that the glowing logo and those old metal MacBook Pros, if you're ancient and remember, what they do is they just cut out the aluminum so that the backlight shown through. So do, should we give everyone the point or just Marques? Because Marques was the only one that put backlight, but I feel like-

• 1:55:15Speaker 01

Seems like I'm the only one.

• 1:55:16David Imel?

  Backlight.

• 1:55:17Speaker 01

I mean, I meant- In Jeopardy, they would have said, can you be more specific? And I would have said backlight.

• 1:55:22David Imel?

Well, if they asked me to be more specific, I would have said backlight.

• 1:55:24Speaker 01

I hope you would have said backlight.

• 1:55:25Speaker 04

Well, next time I'm going to say, can you be more specific? But I think we should award three points.

• 1:55:32Speaker 01

So they all get the point?

• 1:55:33David Imel?

  Thank you, God.

• 1:55:34Speaker 02

  Thank you. Good luck, Andrew.

• 1:55:37David Imel?

  Good luck out there.

• 1:55:39Speaker 01

  I can't believe this.

• 1:55:42Speaker 01

I feel like I'm the only one who should be getting a point.

• 1:55:46Speaker 04

Normally I am that strict, but I don't know, I feel like I'm kind of good today. Maybe I'm trying to put-

• 1:55:52Speaker 01

But I say that was a good question because as you, as you said, the logo is not its own component. I said, oh, I had no idea.

• 1:55:59Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:55:59Speaker 01

And he said, which part of the PC illuminated it? So I had to deduce that the only reasonable answer is they used the backside of the backlight.

• 1:56:07Speaker 04

Exactly. It was one of those really clever Apple decisions where they discovered if we just cut the aluminum like this, you could, it'll glow because of the backlight until you're using it outdoors in a really bright area and then there's a part of your screen of lower contrast in the shape of the Apple logo-

• 1:56:21Speaker 01

  Damn.

• 1:56:22Speaker 04

  -in the center. Cool.

• 1:56:25Speaker 01

  Damn. Sweet. Okay. All right.

• 1:56:27David Imel?

  Well-

• 1:56:29Speaker 01

Comment section, let me know if you disagree with that ruling.

• 1:56:33Speaker 04

And let me know if liquid crystals are not actually based on quartz.

• 1:56:36Speaker 02

Can somebody tell me what happens inside of a computer?

• 1:56:41Speaker 01

And that's our next episode. Thanks for watching. Thank you for listening and for tuning in this week. And of course, when all the news happens on Thursday, we'll be here next week to talk about it as well. Get you guys later. Peace.

• 1:56:51David Imel?

  Goodbye.

• 1:56:52Speaker 04

  Peace. Six and seven.

• 1:56:55Speaker 01

We're presented by Admilia and Ellis Revan and this week Mariah Zake. We are Pod of the Vox Media Podcast Network and our intro outro music is produced by Vane Sill.

• 1:57:08Speaker 01

  Whose voice is that?

• 1:57:09David Imel?

  It's yours!

• 1:57:11Speaker 01

I was like, that sounded like me. Did I say it?

• 1:57:13Speaker 02

  It's you.

• 1:57:14Speaker 01

I don't remember saying that. I don't remember why you said that. I don't remember either.

• 1:57:19David Imel?

We gotta use that as like an intro jingle or like an outro jingle for every episode. It's so good.

• 1:57:31Speaker 01

Chrome ran on four gigs of RAM back in the day?

• 1:57:34David Imel?

  Yep, that's crazy.

• 1:57:36Speaker 02
