Now, more than ever, we need someone on our side. But Rob Whitman? Whitman's votes drove up costs, cut Medicaid, and risked 350,000 Virginians' health care to pay for tax breaks for himself and his donors. He's not on our side. Shannon Taylor will fight corruption, cut taxes, and bring down costs. This November, vote for Shannon Taylor. She's for us. Paid for by HMP, the HouseMajorityPac.com. • 0:48Doug DeMuro?

Hello and welcome to this car pod.

• 0:51Speaker 04

  I'm Kenan.

• 0:52Doug DeMuro?

I'm Felipe. Let's start with the news. First news story is this thing. Do you know what this is? It looks like a Renault R5. I imagine you're gonna say it has 9 million horsepower, and it's electric.

• 1:02Speaker 04

It is electric. It's a Renault R5 Turbo 3e. So a couple of years ago, Renault said, "We're gonna rebuild the R5", which was a hot hatch, well, it was a regular hatchback.

• 1:10Doug DeMuro?

  In the 80s.

• 1:11Speaker 04

And then the R5 Turbo was a hot hatch and turbo.

• 1:13Doug DeMuro?

  Okay.

• 1:14Speaker 04

In the 80s. A legend, truly. They said we were gonna do this. And then they, nobody believed them, because it was at an auto show, the concept car. And then they built the R5, which is like a retro-inspired EV. And they have finally given details on what the Turbo 3e is, which is this wild version that they will produce 1,980 units of.

• 1:33Doug DeMuro?

Are they actually gonna build it?

• 1:34Speaker 04

  Yes, yes.

• 1:35Doug DeMuro?

It's gonna look like this? And they're gonna build this?

• 1:37Speaker 04

Yes, although they've said that it's gonna be very customizable. The interior will be very customizable.

• 1:41Doug DeMuro?

It's fully electric? How much power?

• 1:42Speaker 04

It is 540-something horsepower. Rear-wheel drive, not all-wheel drive.

• 1:47Doug DeMuro?

  Wow. Like the OG?

• 1:48Speaker 04

Legitimately notable. It has two motors, one in each wheel. And it's fully rear-wheel drive. And it's so cool.

• 1:55Doug DeMuro?

Does it do the shifting, like the Ioniq 5 N?

• 1:57Speaker 04

  I don't know.

• 1:57Doug DeMuro?

If it does, this is the first desirable electric car.

• 2:00Speaker 04

It's desirable, period. Look at it.

• 2:02Doug DeMuro?

  It is cool as hell.

• 2:03Speaker 04

It's 540 horsepower. It weighs 3,200 pounds, which for an EV with 250 miles of range, and two

• 2:10Doug DeMuro?

And two, that's really light. Yeah. And it's like a true wild looking hot hatch. Yeah. Like it looks cool. It looks pretty. It looks pretty true to the OG. Yeah, it really does. Under 3.5 seconds zero to 60 is what they're quoting. 168 mile an hour top speed. Unfortunately, what it will not do compared to the OG is try to kill you. I drove a Clio V6. It's a rear wheel drive 540 horsepower car. But the physics issue with the OG was that it had the motor back there.

• 2:35Speaker 05

Yeah. To be clear, not a Clio V6, but it's the same idea.

• 2:38Doug DeMuro?

The Clio V6 was just the newer version of the R5 Turbo, but they, it's the same.

• 2:42Speaker 05

  20 years later, but yeah.

• 2:44Doug DeMuro?

It still was, was, was killy. Uh, anyway, this thing is really, really cool and I love it. I love the wheel. I love it so much. They're gonna build almost 2,000 of them. Unfortunately, not for the US. We'll never see one in the US. We'll never see one in Europe because we go to places that are desirable, not rich. And therefore we'll never see one, but.

• 3:04Doug DeMuro?

Only the French will have them. No, it's very cool. I think it is very cool. It's sad that it can't come to the US, although it would be able to bypass the EPA's 21 year exemption. So it could come to the US tomorrow, but unfortunately NHTSA is still gonna screw us. There are two things that stop the cars from coming in. The EPA has 21 years and NHTSA has 25. 25 is the screwer on this car, but EPA, it's, it's a. What a interesting distinction to make in this specific case. Yeah, in 25 years, we'll see this car in the US. I have no doubt.

• 3:33Speaker 05

I have some doubts, but yeah, nonetheless.

• 3:36Doug DeMuro?

That is the coolest EV that has ever existed. Do you agree? If it does the shifty thing like the Ioniq 5 and. Yeah, I, I would, but it's just cool. I love that it's rear, that it's rear wheel drive. Yes. I, that, I, they're clearly trying to go for something and the styling looks incredible.

• 3:50Speaker 05

There'll be some mod to turn the light, these lights yellow, like they're.

• 3:54Doug DeMuro?

So cool. So cool. The interior photos, by the way, are, which we don't have up, are so cool. I want to see an interior photo. What does it look like? It's the R5 Turbo 3.

• 4:03Speaker 05

  R5 Turbo 3 interior.

• 4:06Doug DeMuro?

I don't know why you missed the E, but it's okay.

• 4:09Speaker 05

  I don't know.

• 4:09Doug DeMuro?

That's, that's. I think the E is actually pretty important to the, is that it? No, I, I've seen a different, different photos. Type the E instead of the, instead of a period.

• 4:17Speaker 05

I don't know how that happens.

• 4:20Speaker 04

It's just like Is that it? That might be, yeah, there's different versions floating around.

• 4:23Speaker 05

  That's the concept car.

• 4:24Speaker 04

  That's the concept.

• 4:25Speaker 05

  This is, this is it?

• 4:26Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 4:26Speaker 05

  It says production.

• 4:27Speaker 04

But then there's also like really cool seats.

• 4:29Speaker 05

  Wow, look at that.

• 4:30Speaker 04

That there is a giant parking brake in the middle, emergency brake in the middle.

• 4:34Speaker 05

So you can pull it and go for a drift.

• 4:36Speaker 04

It's so cool. I love that they're being so playful with it.

• 4:40Speaker 05

This is the coolest EV yet to exist.

• 4:43Doug DeMuro?

Okay, back to our news. Next news story is Mark Rober.

• 4:47Speaker 04

  I love Mark Rober.

• 4:48Doug DeMuro?

Mark Rober is a YouTuber. He makes videos on the internet.

• 4:50Speaker 04

  And

• 4:51Doug DeMuro?

  Much like myself.

• 4:52Speaker 04

And as, if you have a young child, you might discover, he creates like engineering kits that are really aimed at kids from like five to 15.

• 5:00Doug DeMuro?

So he's like an engineering YouTuber. He makes a lot of cool engineering videos. And he just did this video, this has been a big deal this week, where he compared a Tesla, which has radar sensors.

• 5:12Speaker 04

Tesla's automated driving works solely off of cameras. Everybody else uses LiDAR, in addition to cameras.

• 5:19Doug DeMuro?

And he compared it to a car that has LiDAR.

• 5:21Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 5:21Doug DeMuro?

And he did a bunch of different tests with it to see, you know, what this, whether Tesla's system wasn't, was, wasn't safe enough. And he basically had like a kid, would the car stop if it saw a kid run into the road? And the answer for the Tesla was yes. But then when you added rain to the experience and a kid was running into the road, it was just too much going on and the Tesla ran into the kid, et cetera.

• 5:42Speaker 04

  Yep.

• 5:42Doug DeMuro?

I think actually the Tesla in that one didn't run into the kid, but with fog it ran into the kid.

• 5:45Speaker 04

There ran to the kid with fog.

• 5:47Doug DeMuro?

But the best one was this, where he actually created a fake road on a, on a sheet ahead of the car.

• 5:53Speaker 04

  Wile E. Coyote style.

• 5:54Doug DeMuro?

Wile E. Coyote style to see if the Tesla would run into the road. The cars with LiDAR see this as an object and don't hit it. But the Tesla did run into the road, smashed right into this giant, this giant street.

• 6:06Speaker 05

Great consumer advice. Who hasn't run into a Wile E. Coyote experience in their path? I certainly have. I know to stop. But it is, it is fascinating to see the difference between the approaches.

• 6:16Doug DeMuro?

And to just see it all tested and actually, the truth be told, the real world application to this video, I think is minimal.

• 6:22Speaker 05

  I don't know.

• 6:22Doug DeMuro?

Okay, obviously. The street in heavy fog. There are certainly situations where it's probably happened.

• 6:27Speaker 04

The point is Elon Musk has been And Tesla's engineers have made a really big point. They used to use LiDAR in some of their earlier Model S systems. They got rid of that and have said repeatedly, cameras are good enough. What this demonstrates is that in edge, certainly in edge cases where there's a fake wall road, but also in situations where

• 6:45Doug DeMuro?

  That is an edge case.

• 6:46Speaker 04

In situations where visibility is low, so snowy, snow, rain, fog, other related events, LiDAR still has a really substantial benefit because cameras can only see really what less than you as a human can see.

• 7:00Doug DeMuro?

  Yeah.

• 7:01Speaker 04

And so their visibility is not improved in this sense.

• 7:03Doug DeMuro?

It was interesting. Given how Tesla sells this product, full self-driving, you see some limitations in edge cases. I will say in concurrence with Tesla, honestly, it probably is good enough in most situations.

• 7:16Speaker 04

Sure. There's a big difference between is it good enough for normal and does it match what they claim the benefits of the cameras versus LiDAR are? Answer to that second question is no. Is it good enough for normal driving? Sure. Unless you're trusting it to also drive in the rain or fog.

• 7:32Doug DeMuro?

I will say, he also did give Tesla a big benefit in this test. He allowed the cars to be running on autopilot when he did the test. Did you notice that? Whereas the LiDAR car presumably was not running on any sort of thing. It was just using the LiDAR sensors. Now, I would do wonder if it was running under full self-driving, if that would change things at all, but probably it's still camera based and probably wouldn't have had an effect. Regardless, it doesn't work all that well in these edge cases. The edge cases are really edgy in this situation.

• 7:54Speaker 04

And certainly, I mean, Mark Rober tried to make it good television, good YouTube. And so you need to run over a child, a fake child, but a child. There is ample evidence that Tesla is not great at identifying things in rain because the rain does mess with cameras. And you've also seen a lot of cases, or at least a few cases of them hitting stationary objects.

• 8:14Doug DeMuro?

  Yeah.

• 8:14Speaker 04

Fire vehicles, things that are reflective, which makes sense because the camera can't process that.

• 8:18Doug DeMuro?

But don't those Waymos, those FPace Waymos, some of their stuff?

• 8:22Speaker 04

I pace. Almost never because LiDAR just shows that it's an object. You can determine, is this something I shouldn't hit way more effectively. Now, LiDAR is way more expensive.

• 8:31Doug DeMuro?

  Right.

• 8:32Speaker 04

  And so there's downsides.

• 8:33Doug DeMuro?

Part of the problem is it's heinous.

• 8:34Speaker 04

The LiDAR sensors in a Waymo and any full autonomous car are heinous.

• 8:38Doug DeMuro?

Even on the EX90, even on the EX90, it looks like a taxi symbol, a taxi sign. Hey, EX90, taxi.

• 8:43Speaker 04

  There are

• 8:44Doug DeMuro?

On the front, it does. Pull up an EX90.

• 8:46Speaker 04

I'm aware. I'm aware. There are in-betweens and there have long been in-betweens. Tesla's gone all-in on cameras and you can see some of the shortcomings.

• 8:53Doug DeMuro?

Click on this. This is their press photo. Look at that. It has a damn taxi light on the...

• 8:59Speaker 04

  It does.

• 8:59Doug DeMuro?

You want to hail an EX90, you go ahead and do that.

• 9:01Speaker 04

Which, by the way, here's a counterpoint to that, what I'm saying. Those exist, not in use by any Volvo system currently.

• 9:08Doug DeMuro?

Yeah, I know. Although I did name EX90 Car of the Year, despite the fact, because they promised me it would exist. Today's show is brought to you by True Classic. And BMW has announced today that when the tariffs, the Trump administration's crazy tariffs... Uh, it's kind of ugly.

• 10:33Doug DeMuro?

When the tariffs go into effect, BMW is going to price protect the cars for one month. So, these BMWs, which will be tariffed at the new rate of god knows what.

• 10:43Speaker 04

  25%?

• 10:44Doug DeMuro?

In theory, but it changes with the winds. These BMWs are going to become incredibly more expensive for BMW to make, and for one month BMW is going to price protect it. Now, after that, they basically, they didn't outright say it. They said, "We will reevaluate", but the implication is, they will not. And so... That's going to change the pricing of these vehicles quickly.

• 11:04Speaker 04

It's gonna, the OEMs will have to change pricing. And whether they change just pricing on impacted vehicles, or whether they change pricing on their entire model line to make the savings equivalent for them, it's gonna be inevitable. You can't eat 25% increases.

• 11:18Doug DeMuro?

You can't eat 25%. There's just no way they got 25% of cost in this car.

• 11:21Speaker 04

So you have to pass some of it along to the consumer, which every economist agrees will happen. It's interesting they're doing this. Clearly, they think that they're either gonna be very short-lived.

• 11:32Doug DeMuro?

  Yep.

• 11:32Speaker 04

Or they think that there's some benefit once they go into effect to waiting a month and trying to get additional sales that month. It's one of the two.

• 11:39Doug DeMuro?

It's an interesting situation. I presume all of this car's competitors are not built in Canada or Mexico.

• 11:44Speaker 04

I wouldn't, I, who knows? Some components are.

• 11:48Doug DeMuro?

But are Caymans, like are European cars also targeted at these tariffs?

• 11:51Speaker 04

  At the moment, no.

• 11:53Doug DeMuro?

  How ironic.

• 11:54Speaker 04

But there are other tariffs that impact Europe.

• 11:56Doug DeMuro?

  Yeah.

• 11:56Speaker 04

And so I would not be shocked if that changes.

• 11:58Doug DeMuro?

This whole thing is a complete disaster. And it's gonna be a real disaster for the auto industry. And, and I understand Trump's idea of trying to get manufacturing jobs back to the US. That's not gonna happen by April 1. I mean, the, the concept of it is so silly. And if these tariffs go into effect, this is gonna be incredibly damaging. You know, it's funny because President Trump ran on, one of the things he ran on was the previous guy increased the prices of stuff.

• 12:18Speaker 04

Yeah. There's inflation, there's prices. There's no way around it.

• 12:23Doug DeMuro?

  Yikes.

• 12:24Speaker 04

Unless, except for cases where the manufacturer is willing to eat that entire cost.

• 12:27Doug DeMuro?

BMW for a month. There's no point doing it for long. They're not selling cars for practice.

• 12:32Speaker 04

Also, like, you know, the other part, they probably have a month of inventory in the US.

• 12:36Doug DeMuro?

They're not gonna eat a single. No, but I presume it's, it's gonna be based on when the car came over and maybe they'll base it on, who knows how they're gonna even do what they just, what they said. Or how President Trump's gonna do it. The whole thing's insane. And it'll be interesting to see how these cars are affected and Tacomas and everything else.

• 12:53Speaker 04

Credit to BMW, they got a positive news story out of it.

• 12:56Doug DeMuro?

They got a positive news story, a brief positive news story.

• 12:58Speaker 04

From doing, to be clear, no automaker has said exactly what your pricing would be under the tariff.

• 13:04Doug DeMuro?

Automakers don't know what's gonna happen. And I think a lot of these automakers are still thinking it isn't gonna happen. And I, I'm increasingly thinking that it might. Okay, next news story, please.

• 13:15Speaker 04

  Ah, yes.

• 13:15Doug DeMuro?

Yes. Some sort of electric vehicle in China.

• 13:17Speaker 04

I guess that's the Felipe story.

• 13:21Speaker 04

This is BYD. This is BYD. Are you familiar?

• 13:24Speaker 05

Oh, yes, of course. Build your dreams. I built my dream.

• 13:26Speaker 04

They on the Lexus LX configurator.

• 13:29Speaker 05

  Goddamn right.

• 13:30Speaker 04

They announced this week that they've had a breakthrough in a combination of battery technology and like charger technology, basically, where they're rolling out two vehicles that are actively for sale right now or will be shortly in China that will be able to do one megawatt charging, so 1,000 kilowatt charging.

• 13:47Speaker 05

  Wow.

• 13:48Speaker 04

Right now, the fastest, basically what that means is that they'll be able to charge something like 250 miles of range in five minutes.

• 13:54Doug DeMuro?

Think about that. If you can charge 250 in five minutes, that's it.

• 13:58Speaker 05

  That's on par with that.

• 13:58Doug DeMuro?

There are no more boundaries to EVs at that point, except like, we don't like how they sound, we don't like how they look, whatever, which are reasonable.

• 14:05Speaker 05

  Well, there are no more.

• 14:06Doug DeMuro?

  But it's done.

• 14:07Speaker 05

There are no more boundaries for the user experience. Yeah, there are a lot of boundaries in terms of infrastructure to support charging they can do.

• 14:12Speaker 04

To that point, BYD is rolling out for the first time ever their own charging network in China.

• 14:16Speaker 05

  Wow.

• 14:17Speaker 04

Because they recognize that there aren't chargers that can do.

• 14:19Doug DeMuro?

A lot of people, whenever the charging electric cars come up, a lot of misinformed people are like, the grid, the grid. But in this case, what about the grid? I can't get a megawatt at my house.

• 14:29Speaker 05

  No.

• 14:30Speaker 04

  No.

• 14:30Doug DeMuro?

So like, is this even beneficial?

• 14:32Speaker 04

There's a reason that BYD is building a charging network.

• 14:34Doug DeMuro?

  Right.

• 14:34Speaker 04

Because presumably they can put them places where the.

• 14:36Doug DeMuro?

But every time I go to one of these EV launches, the automakers always say to me that 92% of consumers do 92% of their charging at home. So like, the charging networks appreciate it. If you could do it in five minutes, maybe you wouldn't necessarily charge at home, right?

• 14:49Speaker 05

That's exactly right. Then it would eliminate that fear that people have of like, I want to do 500 miles and I can't do a road trip. Well, it's like, well, even honestly, 10, I would like, be amazing.

• 15:00Speaker 04

But fundamentally, you stop at a gas station, pumping isn't a full five minutes unless you're in a Countach, but it's close.

• 15:05Doug DeMuro?

Oh, man. Yesterday, dude, yesterday I had the.

• 15:08Speaker 05

  In California.

• 15:09Doug DeMuro?

Yesterday, it took me 20 minutes to get five gallons and so much fuel got onto the ground.

• 15:17Doug DeMuro?

  Misguided California BS policy.

• 15:19Speaker 04

For those that don't know, in California, gas nozzles need to have like a little tube thing that needs to be engaged to prevent emission.

• 15:24Doug DeMuro?

There is a seal on the fuel nozzle that goes into the car to make sure that fuel and fuel vapors don't go everywhere. Which is totally reasonable and scientifically makes brilliant sense, but like so many bad California policies, they don't think about the 5% of people for whom this screws. And it screws all vintage car owners. And so when you try to stick the fuel nozzle into the car.

• 15:45Speaker 04

  Wow.

• 15:45Doug DeMuro?

Well, I don't know, 2%? Regardless, I guarantee that I got more fuel on the ground at the filling station by my house yesterday than all of the fuel nozzles in San Diego County saved yesterday. There's nothing I can do. And dude, I tried every different, every different combination of possibility. It just doesn't work for old cars.

• 16:05Speaker 04

Probably isn't advisable, but isn't there some sort of attachment people like vintage car owners have to like?

• 16:09Doug DeMuro?

It would be nice if there was. I could fill a gas can and then put it in the car, but like, I'm just trying to fill up my damn car. And yes, some vapors will go out because I have a vintage car, but instead I'm telling you a quart of fuel, a quart of gas.

• 16:21Speaker 04

  Let me tell you something.

• 16:21Doug DeMuro?

  Caught on the ground.

• 16:22Speaker 04

Have you been behind your car when it's running? There's a lot of vapor coming out the back of that car anyway.

• 16:26Doug DeMuro?

Just trash policy. But anyway, uh, but BYD will save us all.

• 16:31Speaker 04

That is a really notable charging speed improvement.

• 16:33Doug DeMuro?

  Yep.

• 16:34Speaker 04

With some battery tech improvement, but fundamentally more like charging technology and like how they do motors for charging.

• 16:41Doug DeMuro?

May I ask you the obvious question?

• 16:43Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 16:43Doug DeMuro?

  Do we believe them?

• 16:45Speaker 04

  Good question.

• 16:47Doug DeMuro?

Yeah. Remember they told us they made that electric car that jumps?

• 16:51Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 16:51Doug DeMuro?

  Like that.

• 16:52Speaker 04

Deep AI, deep fake. BYD, to their credit, is one of the most well-known EV brands, legitimately. The market believes them, their stock went up notably. I, I do think that there is.

• 17:03Doug DeMuro?

Tesla lies all the time and their stock always goes up. It's a great situation.

• 17:06Speaker 04

I, I think that the threat is actually accurate.

• 17:08Doug DeMuro?

  Is this that?

• 17:10Speaker 04

I believe this actually, I would be way more skeptical if they

• 17:12Doug DeMuro?

Get the flag shirt on too.

• 17:13Speaker 04

I would be way more skeptical if they said they had some like large battery technology development change. That's not what this was. It was a bunch of incremental improvements to existing like how you charge an EV.

• 17:23Doug DeMuro?

  Well.

• 17:24Speaker 04

And so I do believe them and it's exciting that that is a, there are already cars that you've reviewed, the new Taycan is one of them. That are on 800 volt infrastructure.

• 17:32Doug DeMuro?

Yeah, they can charge in 20, 30 minutes.

• 17:34Speaker 04

You charge, there have been cars that are in like the 100 mile per five minute range charging. This is not that big a leap, but it is a milestone for sure.

• 17:40Doug DeMuro?

If, if it's doable, it goes back to what I've said on so many of these podcasts, which is the Chinese continue to run with a huge advantage because they have these massive incentives to make EVs in China. And we in the States remain behind. If BYD breaks through at five minute charging and we're still in the dark ages with our Mach EVs. This is another example of why the US government should be subsidizing electric vehicles as much as I hate, as much as in some, in some parts of me, the capitalist in me sometimes hates to say it. We want to win. And if they're charging EVs in five minutes, they are.

• 18:08Speaker 04

  By the way, $35,000.

• 18:10Doug DeMuro?

$35,000 car can charge in five minutes and it has a taxi thing in the, in the roof. Okay. Next story please.

• 18:15Speaker 04

Oh, how lovely. A, a fellow on a modded 360 with South Dakota plates. Seems about right. What's the news story here?

• 18:26Doug DeMuro?

Shocked that this one isn't actually, it's still believed.

• 18:28Speaker 04

It's me, once again, in 20, in the last year, 40% of new Ferrari buyers, so buyers new to the, first time owning a new Ferrari. Are under 40.

• 18:39Doug DeMuro?

Yeah. I mean, a year ago, that was 30%.

• 18:42Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 18:43Doug DeMuro?

  This is notable.

• 18:43Speaker 04

It's, it's hugely notable and it goes back to some of the stuff we've been talking about with Ferrari's changes in, in their, and how they're making and selling cars.

• 18:50Doug DeMuro?

  Working.

• 18:50Speaker 04

You know, I made this big deal about how Ferrari is screwing themselves over because they're making all these SF90s and selling to people who aren't going to be able to get the newer, the exotic cars. Ferrari didn't care. They're just trying to sell cars.

• 18:59Doug DeMuro?

  And they're getting new buyers.

• 19:00Speaker 04

  And they're getting new buyers.

• 19:01Doug DeMuro?

Which is rare. Think about it. The people that buy expensive cars.

• 19:05Speaker 04

  Aren't generally that young.

• 19:07Doug DeMuro?

  Yeah.

• 19:07Speaker 05

Ferrari once said, "I build my cars for young men, yet only old men can afford them."

• 19:11Doug DeMuro?

But the thing is, Ferrari has changed their strategy entirely. It used to be you had to get on a five-year waiting list to get one. They are completely going away from that. They want to sell cars to people. And this thing also says only 80% of sales are to existing customers, which means that basically a quarter of Ferraris are going to new buyers. A couple of years ago, new buyers really didn't have access to new Ferraris. And that is totally changing.

• 19:31Speaker 04

They always had access to California.

• 19:33Speaker 05

  To be clear.

• 19:34Doug DeMuro?

  But pre-California, they didn't.

• 19:36Speaker 05

I think they're selling a lot of... It's clear based on their sales numbers from last year that said that they were selling a lot of hybrids. That's the 296.

• 19:42Doug DeMuro?

Well, and the SF90. Because I think new buyers can walk into a dealer and get an SF90 tomorrow.

• 19:48Speaker 05

I'm sure there are ones sitting around that they are desperate to get rid of.

• 19:52Doug DeMuro?

It is interesting. I have said so many times, "Ferrari's changing the strategy. This isn't good for them." In the end, I think they changed the strategy in a way that it will still be good for them. They are reaching new buyers. It isn't going to be the Ferrari that we knew before, where you had to get on a list and there was value in that. But instead, they have new people coming in who they're selling cars to.

• 20:09Speaker 04

There is a real concern that you guys have voiced before, that will there still be as many children that were passionate about Ferrari? Here's a 10-year-old, 12-year-old, I don't know, driving a 360. Or in a 360.

• 20:22Speaker 04

  Sitting in a 360.

• 20:22Speaker 05

  Manual one, though.

• 20:23Speaker 04

  A manual.

• 20:25Speaker 04

Will that happen? Will there be kids that want to sit in an SF90 to the same degree? Maybe, maybe not. But they'll see more around.

• 20:32Doug DeMuro?

It's less about the kids and more about, does the brand get devalued if they're just selling cars to anybody who walks in the door?

• 20:39Speaker 05

Well, also, to be clear, like, I think a lot of kids who fell in love with Ferrari, fell in love with, I think it's often been the poster cars.

• 20:46Doug DeMuro?

  Sure.

• 20:46Speaker 05

Which means that, like, so like, in this case, like, maybe this kid's dream Ferrari is a Daytona SP3, because that was the hottest, craziest Ferrari at the time. For a lot of people, it was the F40 or the F50. Not many people had a Mondeau on their wall, but they sold those to people eventually.

• 21:01Speaker 04

The F80, I'm sure, will be equally appealing.

• 21:04Speaker 05

Yeah, I'm not even gonna touch that one. But like, I think that, I think it will have appeal. It will be different. As long as they continue to be like effective in Formula One, I think for the diehard enthusiast, that's like kind of what matters, but.

• 21:16Doug DeMuro?

I really think though, the bigger question is, is less about whether the young people are into it and more about whether the brand cheapens itself by selling more and more and more cars. It used to be that getting a Ferrari was special. You were on a list for years and it was hard. Now, we could, anybody with, any rich person can get a Ferrari.

• 21:33Speaker 05

  Right.

• 21:33Doug DeMuro?

That definitely makes it less appealing.

• 21:34Speaker 05

With the exception of the really special stuff, it's still gonna be incredibly hard to get. So I think they have that going for them. Whereas like, you know, McLaren, you can kind of get any of them. If you wanted an Elva, thank God, take it off.

• 21:46Doug DeMuro?

  Artura.

• 21:46Speaker 05

Any of them, so like, I think.

• 21:48Doug DeMuro?

And so the question there is, what happens to the brand? And I think it remains to be seen, but I think Ferrari's taking the risk that, it's not like they're tripling their volume overnight. Like, they're still going relatively small and they're, they're just gonna try to continue to sell cars to people and make more money. It's a public company, it's what they gotta do.

• 22:04Speaker 04

  And they're reaching younger consumers.

• 22:05Doug DeMuro?

  Younger people.

• 22:06Speaker 04

More people are good for them as long as they can retain them.

• 22:08Doug DeMuro?

Today's show is brought to you by Brunt. Boots are just like cars. There are many choices and the one you choose has a direct impact on how functional and enjoyable your activities are. • 23:33Doug DeMuro?

Please support our podcast and tell them that we sent you. Speaking of Ferrari, give us our last story.

• 23:38Speaker 05

This one is mine. Now, although this is a diagram of an engine, this is a Ferrari engine because recently Ferrari filed a patent for a new type of engine. Now, what's interesting about it is that the pistons themselves aren't circular, they're ovals.

• 23:51Doug DeMuro?

  That is interesting.

• 23:52Speaker 05

This is not the first time a manufacturer has done this. Honda did this as well, they also do it with motorcycle engines. And the reason that it's so interesting is that basically it makes the engine substantially more compact. The engines, the pistons can be mounted, the cylinders can be much closer together. So you can end up with a very high-efficiency engine.

• 24:09Doug DeMuro?

So why didn't anybody do this before?

• 24:11Speaker 05

Well, the piston rings are hard to manage and there are a couple of other engineering reasons why it is very difficult. But what's interesting about, what's really interesting to me about this diagram is that it's a 12-cylinder engine. Not a six, not an eight, there are 12 pistons.

• 24:27Doug DeMuro?

But if they're trying to make it smaller, do you think they're maybe making room for hybrid componentry?

• 24:31Speaker 05

I think it's room for hybrid componentry and I suspect it's also room to be mid-engined. I suspect this engine is going to go in the back of something, maybe a new Testerosa. But what's really notable about this to me, in addition to how crazy the design is and they're like pushing the envelope of engineering, this will be the first new V12 they've developed since 2002, which was the F140 V12 on the Enzo. They then used that in all subsequent V12.

• 24:52Doug DeMuro?

  Various variations of it.

• 24:53Speaker 05

With the exception of the 575 and 612, which use the same engine, which was the previous.

• 24:57Doug DeMuro?

The previous one, that was already.

• 24:58Speaker 05

The F140 has been in production for, you know, a really long time. 25 years. And so if they're really pursuing a new 12-cylinder engine and it's going to have this cutting-edge technology. Assuming they can make it work. It is Ferrari, who knows? They might file this patent and they can't make the engine work and they'll get rid of it.

• 25:14Doug DeMuro?

It's interesting though, because the F80 is using a six cylinder. So they're making it, they're creating a 12 cylinder still, but they're not putting it in the flagship car.

• 25:22Speaker 05

Might be in the Ekon series and not in the...

• 25:25Doug DeMuro?

  Yikes. That's interesting.

• 25:26Speaker 05

Which, that speaks volumes, I think, to us enthusiasts.

• 25:30Doug DeMuro?

  That's interesting.

• 25:30Speaker 05

So yes, they are making more cars for younger people.

• 25:33Doug DeMuro?

Or it's still, or it's just in an 812 successor, but even then,

• 25:36Speaker 05

  Even then.

• 25:37Doug DeMuro?

  You'd be surprised that they don't, if they're making a V12.

• 25:40Speaker 05

  They're putting R&D into a 12 cylinder engine.

• 25:42Doug DeMuro?

And not putting it in the big car.

• 25:44Speaker 04

Engine size and performance aren't directly like...

• 25:47Doug DeMuro?

  Yeah, but having a V12...

• 25:49Speaker 05

  In my world, they are.

• 25:50Speaker 04

If you're going for pure, you want the fastest car, you don't probably put a V12 in it.

• 25:55Doug DeMuro?

Maybe, but having a V12 in the supercar is incredibly valuable.

• 25:59Speaker 04

Not where Ferrari is right now. They want, they're going after performance, they're going less for heritage.

• 26:03Speaker 05

Engines are a core competency engine for that manufacturer. In the same way that flat sixes are for Porsche, V8s are for Ford, Mustang, V12s are for Ferrari.

• 26:12Doug DeMuro?

Plus, the super Ferraris have always had V12s with a few exceptions. Okay.

• 26:16Speaker 05

But nonetheless, really exciting news. Can't wait to see where this, how this develops.

• 26:20Doug DeMuro?

Yeah, they've certainly never had V6s. That is really interesting. And now we move on to our Talk Cars segment, which is sponsored by the Lexus LX. The Lexus LX.

• 26:27Speaker 04

I want to be clear, it's not. It's sponsored by Cars and Beds. Go to carsandbids.com.

• 26:31Doug DeMuro?

Lexus LX, I want to be clear about this also, since you were being clear. The Lexus LX is offered in the following colors: Earth, Nori, Eminent, or Caviar. Which LX do you want?

• 26:42Speaker 04

I really thought that was a joke.

• 26:43Doug DeMuro?

  No, those are the colors.

• 26:46Speaker 05

  I believed in my son.

• 26:47Doug DeMuro?

Um, okay. I want to start by talking about how me and Filippo saw a LaFerrari.

• 26:50Speaker 04

  We did.

• 26:51Doug DeMuro?

Folks, I'm going to tell you a story. It's a great story. Look at this picture. This is a picture I took on Sunday. Filippo and I drove out to the desert because, God, we are, we're free people. We can do whatever the hell we want.

• 27:01Speaker 04

  Yep.

• 27:02Doug DeMuro?

We drove out to the desert. And so, and so we're driving along in Palm Springs in Palm Desert there. And I tell Filippo, I say, Filippo, there's this street in Palm Desert called El Paso. It's where all the nice cars are. I say, a couple of years ago, I was here and I saw a new Ford GT, which is a car you don't really see on the road. I say, we gotta go down El Paso. He says, alright, fine, let's go down El Paso. So I, I turned, I was in a new 911, God knows why. Sounds like a dream.

• 27:25Speaker 05

  It does.

• 27:28Doug DeMuro?

We were in a new 911, driving through the desert. Uh, anyway, so we start driving, like, we're on the street for a block after I had just built it up as this street full of crazy cars, and we see this LaFerrari. So obviously I freak out as a seasoned former car spotter.

• 27:42Speaker 05

  Right.

• 27:42Doug DeMuro?

I'm like, oh my God, it's a LaFerrari. And Filippo's sitting there like, like, yeah, you know.

• 27:46Speaker 05

Cars are cars, you know, I don't know.

• 27:50Doug DeMuro?

No, I agreed. I thought about it. So I U-turn and I go back to it as fast as I possibly can. And then I have to do another sharp U-turn. I do this crazy sharp U-turn in the new 911, and then an alarm goes off in the 911. It goes, whee, whee, whee. Like, and then the hazard lights go on, like I'm trying to steal the car. Because I had just done this sharp turn.

• 28:09Speaker 05

  Made no sense.

• 28:10Doug DeMuro?

We think it was because like, it thought it had been in an accident or something. But the turn idea wasn't insane. Like, it's what you would do on a track.

• 28:16Speaker 05

Exactly. Known as one of the best, most balanced sports cars of all time. You did a hard turn and it thought.

• 28:22Doug DeMuro?

So anyway, so regardless of this, now the alarm is going off, whee, whee, and the hazard lights are on and I'm chasing this LaFerrari down the road like a, like I'm a cop trying to pull him over and my Porsche will answer the siren. Anyway, so eventually he parks and actually the very next, the very next turn in, he parks. So go to the next, are all the pictures in here?

• 28:40Speaker 05

  No, just the one.

• 28:41Doug DeMuro?

Oh, we don't have all the pictures? They're beautiful photos. They actually weren't. Uh, but the fella got out of the car, was an old guy, and he got out of the car and I don't really talk to the people. I don't, I don't really care.

• 28:53Speaker 05

They have a red 911 chasing them, alarm going off.

• 28:57Doug DeMuro?

Um, but the guy pulled over and he tried to go into an art gallery that was closed and he left the car sitting there and it was very exciting.

• 29:03Speaker 05

  It was.

• 29:03Doug DeMuro?

And then somebody opened the fuel filler. You never see a LaFerrari on the street. I haven't seen a LaFerrari on the street. Actually, you and me saw one in Malibu three years ago, probably.

• 29:12Speaker 05

  I guess it was, yeah.

• 29:13Doug DeMuro?

An apparel. An apparel. This was incredible. And I was very excited by the whole thing. And I'm still kind of trying to figure out who was driving. It was from Chicago and I have a buddy up there and I was like, do you know this guy? And he didn't. We gotta do some digging.

• 29:26Speaker 05

  Gotta do some digging.

• 29:27Doug DeMuro?

It was quite a moment. Wait a moment.

• 29:30Speaker 04

  For him.

• 29:31Speaker 05

For you, it was just another day.

• 29:32Doug DeMuro?

He didn't care. And you know what? I was disappointed by the general reaction. People are, oh, it's a LaFerrari. It's not an F50. Like, if you'd seen an F50, people would be freaking out. It's the still as Ferrari Supercar. When was the last time you saw a Ferrari Supercar?

• 29:43Speaker 04

  Couple of weeks ago.

• 29:44Speaker 05

Yeah, a couple of weeks ago, Amelia Island.

• 29:46Doug DeMuro?

Driving down the street, you're in up, you're next to a Prius, you see 5 million rolling down the street.

• 29:51Speaker 04

What was the dude doing? It was a Sunday in March.

• 29:54Doug DeMuro?

He was out having some fun.

• 29:55Speaker 04

  I'm glad he drives it.

• 29:56Doug DeMuro?

Listen, in Palm Springs, this is the time, we should go car spotting in Palm Springs one day because in the, in the spring, all these people are about to have to go back to the hellish cold places they're from. Okay?

• 30:06Speaker 04

  Right.

• 30:06Doug DeMuro?

So they all have to go back to Alberta and Minnesota and Manitoba and Illinois. And so they're getting the last little bit of enjoyment out of Palm Springs. They're playing the last rounds of golf. They're, they're.

• 30:17Speaker 04

Playing their last rounds of golf again.

• 30:18Doug DeMuro?

They're playing their last rounds of golf again. They're trying to convince their wife to let them play yet another round of golf. And they're driving their LaFerraris.

• 30:26Speaker 05

  Man, how special.

• 30:27Doug DeMuro?

  It was special.

• 30:28Speaker 05

  It is, yes.

• 30:29Speaker 04

  All of that.

• 30:30Speaker 05

It is. It's, again, not my favorite of the Ferrari Supercars, but to see one just like driving.

• 30:34Doug DeMuro?

In fact, your least favorite, I presume.

• 30:36Speaker 04

Oh, don't make it do this.

• 30:38Doug DeMuro?

  Oh, no, not yet.

• 30:40Speaker 05

Not yet. It's not yet my least favorite. No, yeah, but it's just special. Someone actually using this car as a car.

• 30:47Doug DeMuro?

It's so crazy to see now. I mean, they've become such investments. I never assumed that I'll see any of these cars at any point.

• 30:53Speaker 05

  Yeah, exactly.

• 30:54Doug DeMuro?

  It's totally insane.

• 30:55Speaker 05

And in fact, the battery works. It's astonishing. It's not at a dealer that replaced for 260 grand. It's amazing.

• 30:59Speaker 04

That's why they had a prominent dealership on the back. Glad the dealer did that for them.

• 31:04Speaker 05

They know the dealer very well.

• 31:05Doug DeMuro?

Montana plates like they all are.

• 31:07Speaker 05

  Yup, yup.

• 31:08Doug DeMuro?

Okay, uh, next top car story is from Filippo. Filippo, you gonna talk about Earth, Wind & Fire, whatever the colors were on that car?

• 31:15Speaker 04

No, but I do want to talk about electric vehicles.

• 31:18Doug DeMuro?

  Electric vehicles. Great. Lovely.

• 31:20Speaker 04

Have you noticed that there are, for most of like the higher end electric vehicles, the Model Ss, the Model X, the Cybertruck, the R1S, the R1T? I'm gonna run out. All those, right?

• 31:30Doug DeMuro?

  Help me out here.

• 31:31Speaker 04

They, they all have an incredibly high performance version.

• 31:34Doug DeMuro?

  Yeah.

• 31:34Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 31:35Speaker 04

The, the, the plaid is incredibly fast.

• 31:37Doug DeMuro?

  Right.

• 31:37Speaker 04

The Lucid Air Sapphire is a $250,000 four electric motor vehicle. The R1S has a three motor and a four motor version. You can't tell any of them apart from the base version of that car.

• 31:49Doug DeMuro?

  Yeah.

• 31:50Speaker 04

  It's absolutely visually.

• 31:51Doug DeMuro?

  Whereas on M3.

• 31:53Speaker 04

Right, M3 you can tell, an M5 you can tell, an R5 turbo, man, can you tell.

• 31:58Doug DeMuro?

Yes. He admits to me when we were driving back from the desert. Pull up, you know, I want to, I want to, I want to argue with you a little here.

• 32:04Speaker 04

  There's something here.

• 32:04Doug DeMuro?

What, the model? Go back to the site.

• 32:06Speaker 04

  Okay, sure, you can see.

• 32:07Doug DeMuro?

Type in Model 3 Performance, Model 3 Performance.

• 32:10Speaker 04

Are you going to go for the plate frame that says all-wheel drive?

• 32:13Doug DeMuro?

Folks, look at the vast distinction. It's a sea of differentiation. Click on this blue one.

• 32:20Speaker 04

Which, by the way, has real horsepower and.

• 32:22Doug DeMuro?

This car compared to a regular Model 3, this car has.

• 32:26Speaker 04

I think the wheels are maybe different, but you can get performance wheels on a base.

• 32:30Doug DeMuro?

  Well, um.

• 32:31Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 32:32Doug DeMuro?

  You know.

• 32:33Speaker 04

But like, why doesn't, why doesn't, certainly Tesla, but I get that because they want to produce the fewest panels possible. But why doesn't Rivian try to differentiate their highest powered R1S? Which is like a G63.

• 32:47Doug DeMuro?

It's better performance. Rivian sells a G63, but they don't tell anybody about it.

• 32:51Speaker 04

Or the Sapphire, Sapphire admittedly has wider track, but that's it.

• 32:54Doug DeMuro?

The Sapphire has a few differences because. The tires are so big and all that. And even the regular era is so cool that they don't need to distinguish that much. The Rivian's are really the best example though. Type in R1S and it's like wild, I totally agree.

• 33:06Speaker 04

  You can't tell.

• 33:07Doug DeMuro?

You have no idea whether you're looking at the large battery, the.

• 33:09Speaker 04

  Quad motor all-wheel drive.

• 33:11Doug DeMuro?

  Quad motor.

• 33:11Speaker 04

Or the dual motor new one.

• 33:14Doug DeMuro?

  It is a story.

• 33:15Speaker 04

  The green one.

• 33:16Doug DeMuro?

It is a story out as old as time from automaker playbooks. If you want people to get the cool version, you put more power in it, but also you make it look cooler so that, that when they're driving around, everybody knows how rich they are and how cool their car is.

• 33:29Speaker 04

  This is the basic one.

• 33:30Doug DeMuro?

You can't tell, you can't tell.

• 33:32Speaker 04

Which is like good if you're buying the base one, I guess, but very bad if you're spending an extra 30 grand.

• 33:37Doug DeMuro?

It's hard to convince people to spend more because even the base R1S has more power than whatever car they were coming out of. So what's the point of going for the crazy one if, and looking. People don't even know. Right, you need to differentiate, Rivian, take our advice, differentiate the models, make them look different. They're going to come out with a quad motor. I do assume though, that the reason is like you said, they're going for some.

• 33:56Speaker 04

Do you want to sell cars or do you not want to sell cars?

• 33:58Doug DeMuro?

  Well.

• 33:59Speaker 04

They're selling either way. Do you want to sell your highest profit margin, which presumably are the most expensive ones?

• 34:04Doug DeMuro?

They are selling either way, but you do want to try to get people to go into your highest margin cars and.

• 34:08Speaker 04

  Assuming they're highest margin.

• 34:09Doug DeMuro?

Yeah, well, they must be. And like, this is just the easiest thing in the world. Have they really done the research and found that making a few new panels and different wheels?

• 34:18Speaker 04

  Right.

• 34:18Doug DeMuro?

Is not worth, I mean, charging an extra 25. If I was getting a Rivian, I would get a base model and I would just, I would tell people it's a quad motor.

• 34:25Speaker 04

Even on cars where you can't tell that he's a hat over them.

• 34:27Doug DeMuro?

Like your stick on the super.

• 34:29Speaker 04

Is it, does a Mercedes CL66 look that, excuse me, CL65 look that different from a 55? Rare model. No, I don't think so. You saw, you saw a V12 Mercedes yesterday. I knew it instantly. Wheels change at the least and there's some like treatment. It's not even body panels. It's just some treatment. Around the car, yeah. And the EV manufacturers need to do the same thing if they want to sell those.

• 34:52Doug DeMuro?

  I agree. I think it's crazy. I think it's crazy. Uh, okay. Next, I, I think that's a very.

• 34:57Speaker 04

  Diet ride over.

• 34:58Doug DeMuro?

  I think it's, I think it's wild and I think it's really surprising.

• 35:00Speaker 04

Call me up, I'll, I'll help.

• 35:02Doug DeMuro?

I want to take a moment to tell you about another podcast you should absolutely check out, Drive with Jim Farley. Ford CEO Jim Farley talks to some of his favorite people about what they drive and what drives them to succeed. He has great guests on the show like the British racing driver, Vicky Butler Henderson, and one of my favorite people, Jay Leno. I've checked out a few episodes of Drive with Jim Farley and I really love to hear his insights. There was a time when we only got to hear from automotive CEOs and press quotes and carefully worded corporate statements. But Jim Farley's podcast is personal and it really shows his passion for cars, which is really cool. And this is a podcast I'm certainly going to keep in my listening routine. Click the link in the description box to listen to Drive with Jim Farley today.

• 35:44Doug DeMuro?

The next thing I want to discuss during the Talk Cars segment today is the Lexus LX, which happens to be the sponsor of the Talk Cars segment.

• 35:52Speaker 04

I, I already heard that Lexus Racing was about a year ago the sponsor of the podcast.

• 35:56Doug DeMuro?

Well, yeah, we're not actually sponsored by Lexus, I don't think. To my, I don't pay attention to a lot of that stuff, but. Except for what he does that read, of course. Okay.

• 36:04Speaker 04

  Close the session.

• 36:04Doug DeMuro?

I bought a year ago, I bought a Sequoia. In the last year, I've been talking about how I'm off cars. I now have behind me the new Lexus LX Overtrail. They sent it to me for the week, I think just to screw with me.

• 36:14Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 36:15Doug DeMuro?

  And now.

• 36:15Speaker 04

Not because it's a new model or anything.

• 36:16Doug DeMuro?

Well, there was that component of it, I suppose. Now I want one desperately. I now wonder if I made a mistake with the Sequoia. I've been pricing the difference between the two. It's pretty significant, actually.

• 36:27Speaker 05

  For those of.

• 36:28Doug DeMuro?

It has everything that the Sequoia lacks. Style, class.

• 36:33Speaker 05

Why can't you just admit you're always on cars?

• 36:35Doug DeMuro?

  No.

• 36:35Speaker 05

You're never off cars. You say you're off cars, but that you just lie. It's like, it's like the Italian government generally. You just lie.

• 36:42Doug DeMuro?

No, no, no, no. Look, look, look, here's the deal. Here's the deal.

• 36:45Speaker 04

  True.

• 36:45Doug DeMuro?

I'm not on cars. However, I drive around in the Overtrail LX and I think to myself, I really wish I had this vehicle. And I'll tell you, there's a.

• 36:54Speaker 04

How much better can it be?

• 36:55Doug DeMuro?

Okay, it solves every problem I have with the Sequoia.

• 36:57Speaker 04

Except for the fact that it's eight inches shorter, which is.

• 36:59Doug DeMuro?

That is one of the biggest problems that it solves. The Sequoia is simply too big.

• 37:03Speaker 04

Remember when you had the Sequoia? We spent a long time in front of your house, moving the seats around to figure out, could it fit six people and a stroller? And the answer was barely.

• 37:12Doug DeMuro?

But it does, and that's hard, actually. Not a lot of cars can do that.

• 37:14Speaker 04

  Eight inches, remove that.

• 37:15Doug DeMuro?

It was actually six people and two strollers. And it was able to do that.

• 37:18Speaker 04

But remove eight inches and you can't.

• 37:19Doug DeMuro?

Yeah, but the problem is, the problem with the Sequoia is with those extra eight inches, I actually don't take it anywhere because it is simply too large. It is too large to drive around. So that would be one problem it solved. It's also always in four-wheel drive. I hate that the Sequoia is in two-wheel drive until you put it in four-wheel drive. Because it's like, how much is it raining that I should put it in four? Is this enough? Um, that's stupid. There's no other SUV like that.

• 37:40Speaker 04

  I agree.

• 37:41Doug DeMuro?

There is no other SUV like that.

• 37:42Speaker 04

That explanation for why it matters to you is also insane.

• 37:44Doug DeMuro?

I hate the gauge cluster situation in the Sequoia. It's not configurable enough. It doesn't show me music. They don't even have music on there. I hate, um.

• 37:53Speaker 05

He has to get a bowl and put his phone in it and that's how he listens to me.

• 37:57Doug DeMuro?

The, the ride quality is so much better in this, even though it's still boff. That's body on frame for, it's an industry term.

• 38:05Speaker 05

  I just.

• 38:05Doug DeMuro?

It's still body on frame. That is the nicest riding body on frame vehicle I've ever driven. It's still about 20 times worse than an X7, but it's the nicest riding body on frame vehicle I've ever driven.

• 38:15Speaker 04

  Was your car not?

• 38:15Doug DeMuro?

That's another thing. It's liftable with air suspension, which my Sequoia is not. Uh, so I could get even extra ground clearance out of it. It has triple lockers, which the Sequoia does not. It has front, rear and center lockers, the over trail only.

• 38:27Speaker 04

  Fine.

• 38:27Doug DeMuro?

And crucially, it has how much extra horsepower? Uh, 20, 20 extra horsepower on the same torque. The powertrain is identical for all intents.

• 38:34Speaker 05

  So.

• 38:36Doug DeMuro?

  Now.

• 38:36Speaker 05

Why don't you just buy one?

• 38:37Doug DeMuro?

Because it's 50 grand more. That's a lot of money. Okay. And second.

• 38:41Speaker 04

Sorry, your, the Sequoia Tier D Pro isn't a cheap vehicle.

• 38:44Doug DeMuro?

Well, it was 83 grand and I felt that was too much.

• 38:47Speaker 04

  This is 50 grand more.

• 38:48Doug DeMuro?

This is 116 and my Sequoia is not worth 83 anymore. It's worth 73 probably. So it'd be a 50 grand swap scheme.

• 38:54Speaker 04

  Math, but okay.

• 38:55Doug DeMuro?

  Well, that's how it works.

• 38:57Speaker 04

  Wow.

• 38:57Doug DeMuro?

It's a 50 grand swap scheme. Now they offer it in this color called desert. And I know what you're thinking. No, it's earth. I'm sorry.

• 39:05Speaker 04

  That, that almost worked.

• 39:06Doug DeMuro?

Did I make a mistake here? I, I, this didn't exist when I bought my Sequoia. I feel, I want this car.

• 39:11Speaker 04

For the record, the LX 600, which is the same except for the hybrid, did exist.

• 39:14Doug DeMuro?

It did, but it was too expensive.

• 39:16Speaker 04

And then I was so worried when the GX 550 came out and you had a press car, that you would like, you, cause there was like a month after you bought the Sequoia.

• 39:23Doug DeMuro?

  Was not.

• 39:23Speaker 04

I was so worried about that. I didn't think I had to be worried a year later about an LX 700H.

• 39:28Speaker 05

I mean, fair. Uh, you go through the stage all the time.

• 39:31Doug DeMuro?

  No.

• 39:32Speaker 05

Whether it's this car or you'll.

• 39:34Doug DeMuro?

  Off-road GLS.

• 39:35Speaker 04

Which was literally a month ago. You really wanted an off-road.

• 39:37Doug DeMuro?

There was only one day that's, and you know what the difference with that was? We found out the off-road package in the GLS doesn't have what I need. And the moment I realized that, I never thought about it.

• 39:45Speaker 04

How deep did you go before you realized?

• 39:47Doug DeMuro?

Deeper than I wish, but it's a whole thing with Mercedes.

• 39:49Speaker 05

Does the Sequoia not just do enough? Why can't you just be satisfied with that?

• 39:53Doug DeMuro?

The Sequoia, the Sequoia looks stupid.

• 39:56Speaker 05

  Yeah, it does, but.

• 39:57Speaker 04

  To be fair.

• 39:57Speaker 05

  It's too late.

• 39:58Speaker 04

Have you seen the F4 LX 700?

• 40:00Speaker 05

  Yes, it is.

• 40:00Doug DeMuro?

Here's the thing, here's the thing about this. The thing that may kill the LX though, the thing that may kill the LX is the self-driving. So the Sequoia. I'm gonna frame, how do I frame this in a way that's consumer friendly?

• 40:11Speaker 04

  God's BTS.

• 40:12Doug DeMuro?

Okay. The Sequoia's self-driving allows you to not necessarily be looking forward. I always do, of course.

• 40:19Speaker 04

It is, it is less restrictive in what it allows the driver.

• 40:22Speaker 05

On a closed circuit with a professional driver, he's not looking forward, but.

• 40:26Doug DeMuro?

So, so, so for example, the Sequoias, the Sequoia has the greatest self-driving tech in the whole industry. And the reason for that is because you only need to rest skin on the steering wheel. And if you're doing that, it will drive for you. You don't have to be looking forward. This car, I think you have to be looking forward.

• 40:40Speaker 04

If you're wearing sunglasses, if you have highly reflective sunglasses, it's helpful.

• 40:44Speaker 05

Just so disturbed by the phrase rest skin, is that an industry term?

• 40:48Doug DeMuro?

Well, because in theory, it has to be a hand, but.

• 40:51Speaker 05

But what if you have gloves on?

• 40:52Doug DeMuro?

Well, you know, I think there gets capacitive, so capacitive gloves would work. But anyway, the LX, I think, requires you to be looking forward.

• 41:03Speaker 04

  I bet it does.

• 41:05Doug DeMuro?

I think this is a rational thing to say. If I want self-driving, I don't want to also have to be looking forward. The whole point of self-driving.

• 41:13Speaker 04

I agree, we're in a weird period of time.

• 41:14Doug DeMuro?

So you're driving that thing selflessly and, and, and then it says, look forward. And it's like, aren't you driving? That would be like asking your passenger to be, hey, man, no, you can't, you can't change the road. You gotta keep looking, gotta keep looking ahead. And your passenger's like, well, but aren't you driving?

• 41:32Speaker 04

  That's a fair point.

• 41:34Doug DeMuro?

You don't want to touch this.

• 41:35Speaker 04

No, we're, we're in a weird period of time where there's claims about the efficacy of self-driving, but the systems aren't there yet. And so, and the legislation certainly isn't there yet. So you're required to be monitored.

• 41:46Doug DeMuro?

And the Sequoia is just before that. The Sequoia is just before it all. So the Sequoia's got the perfect self-driving system and the LX, I don't know yet. I haven't tested it yet, but I'm gonna test it right after this.

• 41:55Speaker 04

  You're not gonna do this.

• 41:56Doug DeMuro?

Cause it's too much money and I'm off cars.

• 41:58Speaker 04

Fifty grand is a, is a big cost.

• 41:59Doug DeMuro?

I'm off cars, I'm off cars. This is all wild.

• 42:04Speaker 05

It's just, it's every time. And if it's not this, it's, oh, do I need the Ford G3? Yeah, absolutely need the Ford G3. And do I need the Corgi T anymore? Absolutely, greatest car ever made.

• 42:10Doug DeMuro?

Well, those are the greatest. I have no interest in changing out those cars.

• 42:13Speaker 04

Except for like once a month.

• 42:15Speaker 05

And then, once a month, he says this, then he drives whatever it is and he says it's the greatest car ever made.

• 42:19Speaker 04

He's gonna drive the Sequoia for the first time in like five months soon and then he'll love it again.

• 42:23Doug DeMuro?

Well, you know, I would, but it's too big. Kenan, tell us about the F1 race situation.

• 42:28Speaker 05

Yes, I'm so excited. So this summer, I'm going to France for my friend, Low Voice Luke. His, his voice is crazy low. You both have met him. He's getting married in La Moche, France. I'm getting married in France. He sounds like this. His voice is actually this, hey, Kenan, what's up? His voice is actually that low.

• 42:44Doug DeMuro?

I'm told that Luke is a listener. He's joined us today. Nice to see you out there, Luke. Or in your language, nice to see you out there.

• 42:51Speaker 05

Yeah, yeah, great to see you too.

• 42:53Doug DeMuro?

Okay, so he's getting married in France. Is that even a legal wedding?

• 42:56Speaker 05

Yes. They're getting married in the US first and then they're having another ceremony there. Yes, but anyway, all, we're basically, every, all of us, all of our friends are like descending on France to, to, to go to this wedding.

• 43:07Doug DeMuro?

  Descending on France.

• 43:07Speaker 05

  Yes. Happened before. In 1944.

• 43:11Doug DeMuro?

  It's like next year.

• 43:14Speaker 05

Anyway, we're, yes, the, the whole band of brothers is getting together to celebrate Luke's, Luke's wedding, which is very exciting. But everybody has turned this into a trip. And I started looking around the dates of what was gonna happen. And I happened to discover that Spa-Francorchamps, my favorite race, Formula One race of the year, is the following weekend. So I looked into buying tickets and I bought them. I'm sitting at the base of Eau Rouge in, uh, it's, uh, like one of the grandstands there. So I can see that and radio.

• 43:38Speaker 04

Do you think Radio will have a?

• 43:39Doug DeMuro?

Despite you parking there? Nice. Despite, no, no one will understand that reference. I do though.

• 43:45Speaker 04

  Q50?

• 43:45Doug DeMuro?

Q50. Despite the fact that it's called Francorchamps and it's, and the corner is called Eau Rouge. It's actually in Belgium, where I think they speak German. And if they don't, they at least have the German flag on their flag.

• 43:58Speaker 05

Well, Belgium exists just so that, just so England and Germany can work out their differences.

• 44:02Doug DeMuro?

So, so you're going to the F1 race. Have you been to an F1 race before?

• 44:05Speaker 05

Yes, this will be my third. I went to, I was, I went to, uh, Austin, I went to the Circuit of America several years ago. And then I went with our friend Sam to. Bachelor party in Montreal.

• 44:13Doug DeMuro?

In Montreal, but this is the first European F1 race. This is like, this is like taking, taking the Countach back to St. Agata.

• 44:20Speaker 05

This is the one. Uh, this is like for me, this is my, it's my favorite race of the year.

• 44:24Doug DeMuro?

  Really?

• 44:24Speaker 05

And it has been for the, so I got flayed a little bit last time. I apologized to the fans of Brawn Racing that I forgot they were the first team to win like as a rookie, like one.

• 44:33Doug DeMuro?

  Yeah, complained, I flayed.

• 44:34Speaker 05

I apologize about that. I did forget about Brawn. Um, but I've watched Formula One for, uh, since oh eight. I've been a fan.

• 44:42Doug DeMuro?

So you saw that Brawn, that was oh nine that Brawn won.

• 44:44Speaker 05

I forgot. Yes, but it was, but yes, I have. I was disappointed. You were disappointed. Look, I have never seen Ferrari win a championship in my entire life. That's something to think about. The eighteen.

• 44:53Doug DeMuro?

So wait, why is it your favorite race? What about the Belgian Grand Prix?

• 44:56Speaker 05

Well, it's incredibly fast. It's incredibly challenging and the, the conditions change.

• 44:59Doug DeMuro?

  Formula One.

• 45:01Speaker 05

Some tracks are faster than others. This one is particularly fast.

• 45:04Doug DeMuro?

Abu Dhabi, they got speed bumps.

• 45:06Speaker 05

  It's.

• 45:07Doug DeMuro?

  It's a slow track.

• 45:08Speaker 05

No, but Austria, the curbs are kind of speed bumps. Um, but it, it is, it's known for its speed. It's known for its constantly changing conditions because it's so big. It rains there a lot. And rain is one of the great, is the great equalizer as it's known. It means that other teams can kind of get in the mix. And this year already, the first Formula One race was last week in Australia. Which I also realize is not where Formula One always starts the races, but it has been for a very long time. Uh, but none, and it was chaos. It was rain and it was insane. It rains in Australia? Yes, there were, there are five rookies, I think, on the, on the circuit this year and four of them have crashed out. But not only them, like experienced drivers crashed out too. It was just a melee.

• 45:44Doug DeMuro?

  So you're hoping for rain?

• 45:45Speaker 05

We always hope for rain with Formula One. Either I'm sitting there drenched, but sitting there at Spa, watching rain would be crazy. I hope it's not as much rain as well as a couple of years ago when they, they had to like cancel race. That would be unfortunate. But just to be there, like, it is so cool.

• 46:00Doug DeMuro?

So if you're going to Spa or if you're one of our three Belgian listeners who also, who we didn't offend already, which I presume you're already turning on. But if you're there, Ken will be there. Go find him and talk to him about M5.

• 46:12Speaker 05

I'm going to be driving a very special car that I don't want to talk about just yet that I'm driving to the wedding.

• 46:16Doug DeMuro?

  Is it a Lincoln Continental?

• 46:18Speaker 05

In Europe, that would be wild.

• 46:19Doug DeMuro?

Is it a Lexus LX 700H over trail in earth?

• 46:23Speaker 05

You know, when I think Europe, that's the vehicle I need.

• 46:26Doug DeMuro?

Last year, let me tell you something. When I was in Europe last year, a year ago, I saw a Lexus GX with California plates.

• 46:32Speaker 05

  Wow.

• 46:32Doug DeMuro?

If somebody, somebody took a Lexus SUV to Europe.

• 46:37Speaker 05

  Amazing.

• 46:37Doug DeMuro?

Okay, Kenan, I'm proud of you. I'm excited for you.

• 46:39Speaker 05

Thank you. You were part of the impetus for this. You, you said, Kenan, if you don't go do this.

• 46:43Doug DeMuro?

He was like, I might go to Monaco instead. I'm like, if, if, not the race, but just to go to Monaco. I was like, if you go to Monaco to see rich Russians driving supercars around at seven miles an hour instead of a Formula One race, I will personally kill you.

• 46:55Speaker 05

I'm gonna do them both. I'm gonna, I will still do that, because I do, I mean, you say that, yeah, we freak out about, you say, freak out about like car shows, about seeing an F40 driven around like, you said the ice.

• 47:04Doug DeMuro?

When I made that proclamation, though, it was one or the other, and I was, if you do them both, that's great. That'd be cool.

• 47:09Speaker 05

And I think I can do Stuttgart as well and see the Porsche Museum and the Mercedes-Benz Museum and then. And in Monaco, you might see a CLK GTR.

• 47:16Doug DeMuro?

You never know. You know how Mercedes Goings or Porsche 959s will typically always be valuable and continue to go up in value? • 48:17Speaker 05

  No. I watched it.

• 48:18Doug DeMuro?

  Of course you did.

• 48:19Speaker 04

  Not yet, I've been busy.

• 48:20Doug DeMuro?

  It's an amazing video.

• 48:21Speaker 04

It came out yesterday. I know that about a million people, literally a million ads filming, have seen it. I have not one of those, I'm sorry, I'm busy.

• 48:29Doug DeMuro?

  You'll watch though, I got.

• 48:30Speaker 04

  I will watch.

• 48:31Doug DeMuro?

I got the bravata coming up and that's one for you.

• 48:34Speaker 04

I will legitimately watch the video.

• 48:35Doug DeMuro?

You've watched the Lexus LX over trail video.

• 48:38Speaker 04

If only I had one on earth.

• 48:39Doug DeMuro?

Anyway, I did see a CLK GT-R video. It was really popular, very interesting car, very interesting video, huge response, just like the Aston Valkyrie, which finished ninth at Sebring. And I find it to be.

• 48:51Speaker 04

It did. Dang it, an NAP12 car finished ninth at Sebring, it's going to Le Mans, it's very important. You didn't want to talk about it, but we're talking about it.

• 48:58Doug DeMuro?

The CLK GT-R video went up, it was huge. And I'm glad that everybody loved it so much. It was a very special thing. I've now reviewed an enormous portion of like the craziest cars and this was definitely one on my bucket list of cars I really, really wanted to review. Huge shout out to Faster LLC, Faster is the YouTube channel who had the car and lent it to me. It's a big risk to lend an idiot a car. We only drove it for a little bit, I didn't push it, I don't care. People are like, "Oh, you didn't drive it hard, yeah, you do it. You're getting a $10 million car and driving it hard. I'm out, I'm all sell, watch your video." But it was amazing. Also to just show it off, because I think most people have no idea, you know, how anything works in this car and it's cool to be up close with it.

• 49:41Speaker 04

If the Valkyrie is a 10 on the, which one, which got ninth at Sebring, if it's a 10 in craziness, where is the CLK GT-R?

• 49:50Doug DeMuro?

The Valkyrie is the craziest thing I've ever, I've ever.

• 49:52Speaker 04

How does it compare to Astron Lagonda?

• 49:55Doug DeMuro?

The Lagonda, that was so cool, man.

• 49:57Speaker 04

  Odometer under the hood.

• 49:59Doug DeMuro?

  The original Lagonda.

• 50:00Speaker 04

  You're talking about the Thera?

• 50:02Doug DeMuro?

No, no, not the Thera, I would have said the Thera. Lagonda.

• 50:04Speaker 04

  I know.

• 50:05Doug DeMuro?

Lagonda, 80's Lagonda and the Vector W8 are still the greatest videos, but CLK and McLaren F1. Sometimes, I'm gonna tell you, I'm gonna confess something, sometimes late at night, when I got nothing else to do, I'll put on one of my old videos.

• 50:19Speaker 04

If the car isn't sad enough, I get it.

• 50:20Doug DeMuro?

And I think to myself, "God, this guy is annoying." Okay, time to move on to the market report, which is brought to you by the Cars and Bids app. To download it, you go somewhere and do something. We don't have time to cover it. We don't have time, we gotta move on to the market report.

• 50:34Speaker 04

  Download it.

• 50:35Doug DeMuro?

  Tell us about stuff.

• 50:36Speaker 04

All right, Kenan, I'm gonna kick us off. Can you go to S65 AMG, please? Yeah, we we sold one yesterday. And there's a 2015 S65 AMG.

• 50:46Doug DeMuro?

  No way!

• 50:47Speaker 04

A twin turbo V12 with 621 horsepower and more torque than like five of the cars in the office come on.

• 50:53Speaker 05

  738.

• 50:54Doug DeMuro?

What's the mileage on this on this beast? Go down? Not high. And it's in Oklahoma.

• 50:59Speaker 04

But it's an incredibly highly equipped car. Scroll down to equipment. It has literally any equipment you might possibly want.

• 51:06Doug DeMuro?

  Oh, the rear seat package?

• 51:07Speaker 04

Right, and then the executive rear seat package, because the regular rear seat package, not executive enough.

• 51:11Doug DeMuro?

Not executive enough, so the executive package has a power calf rest.

• 51:15Speaker 04

  Correct, important.

• 51:15Doug DeMuro?

Filippo doesn't even have calves. He's that poor.

• 51:20Speaker 04

I only have full grown cows?

• 51:23Doug DeMuro?

I was hoping you'd make a cow. Is it license plate V12 AMG?

• 51:27Speaker 04

  Yes, it is.

• 51:28Doug DeMuro?

Wow, because screw you, buddy. Available.

• 51:30Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 51:30Doug DeMuro?

  So it's the only one.

• 51:31Speaker 04

  Here's a 2015 S65 AMG for 33,000.

• 51:35Doug DeMuro?

  Go back to that picture.

• 51:36Speaker 04

  In a field.

• 51:36Doug DeMuro?

He took the pic. This is so Oklahoma. He literally went to a cow pasture.

• 51:40Speaker 05

  There's a literal cow.

• 51:42Speaker 04

It might be a calf, we don't know. It needed the support.

• 51:48Speaker 04

It's fascinating how cheap these are, because a 2015 E63 AMG wagon, which is probably the most expensive like other AMG there, is the same money. Or you could get a V12 with all the equipment in the world. But 100,000 mile E63 wagon is that price too.

• 52:04Doug DeMuro?

  You're right.

• 52:04Speaker 05

Yeah, but the interior doesn't seem that.

• 52:06Speaker 04

No, like these interiors don't wear.

• 52:08Doug DeMuro?

You know, it's interesting. Mercedes had that horrible spate of bad quality cars from like 2000, like 99 to 2009. Since then, no one talks about it, but since then Mercedes-Benz interiors have become the gold standard again. It is amazing how little they show wear. This is a 10 year old car with 100,000 miles. And even in the front, it's amazing to me how little Mercedes-Benz interior can wear.

• 52:28Speaker 05

  The pattern helps a lot.

• 52:30Doug DeMuro?

The pattern helps, but like this, this.

• 52:31Speaker 05

  It looks good.

• 52:32Doug DeMuro?

Dude, you get into 100,000 mile Chevy Tahoe, you've got seven holes in the seats and foam is coming out to a level where you're worried that your dog is gonna find it and eat it.

• 52:40Speaker 04

I do totally get that. So I'm not, I'm used to E63 sedans and S63 AMG sedans being valueless after a while. But this is a V12 and it's worth less than a much less unique, much less rare wagon.

• 52:55Doug DeMuro?

It is funny, the V12s. Even though they're very special, they don't hold their value.

• 53:00Speaker 04

  But it should.

• 53:01Speaker 05

With the exception of like the G65. The G65.

• 53:03Doug DeMuro?

A couple of the V12 and like the Pagani as well. Some of the cars with this motor.

• 53:08Doug DeMuro?

My point being like the black series, some of the cars this motor do hold their value, but it is interesting, given those exist, that you can buy the same motor for not much money. And people are gonna say, well, it's unreliable. Well, it's probably unreliable in the SL65 black series too. I mean, it's the same engine.

• 53:21Speaker 05

  I wouldn't say that the.

• 53:22Doug DeMuro?

  But those are 350 grand.

• 53:23Speaker 05

I would say the engine's unreliable. I mean, this one, I've seen, I mean, this engine's been in production for a really long time.

• 53:28Doug DeMuro?

  And they get miles.

• 53:30Speaker 05

Yeah. And yeah, clearly it gets miles. I, I think that other components on the car might become questionable.

• 53:35Doug DeMuro?

Well, shout out, shout out to the owner for selling it just before 100K. 99.8. I gotta let go. As a rule, clearly.

• 53:42Speaker 04

  The panoramic roof is broken.

• 53:43Doug DeMuro?

  Panoramic roof's broken.

• 53:44Speaker 04

  But like whatever.

• 53:45Doug DeMuro?

  Go to the flaws.

• 53:46Speaker 04

There's not, they're not, otherwise not that insane.

• 53:48Doug DeMuro?

  Yeah, a couple of accidents.

• 53:49Speaker 04

  Needs tires.

• 53:50Doug DeMuro?

And then they got inspected. Two minors on the Carfax, not a big deal.

• 53:53Speaker 04

I mean, but like, like, this is not unique. If you go back out to the results, we've had other S65s in the same price point.

• 53:59Doug DeMuro?

  Yeah.

• 54:00Speaker 04

  Legitimately.

• 54:00Doug DeMuro?

  Yeah.

• 54:00Speaker 04

Like this is what they're worth.

• 54:01Doug DeMuro?

How many miles on that one?

• 54:02Speaker 05

  Wow, this one looks nice.

• 54:03Doug DeMuro?

How many miles on that one? That's a nice.

• 54:04Speaker 05

  90,000.

• 54:04Doug DeMuro?

  90,000 in North Carolina.

• 54:05Speaker 04

And I find that to be insane.

• 54:07Speaker 05

  So there's a flaw.

• 54:08Doug DeMuro?

You know which one I really wanted? I begged the guys to take this. We thought the reserve was too high and it was, it didn't sell. This blue color is the coolest thing in the world. Don't you think? An S65 is cool.

• 54:17Speaker 05

  But they're all black.

• 54:18Doug DeMuro?

They're all black, silver, white. Having one that's actually a special color, going past someone at 200 miles an hour in blue.

• 54:24Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 54:25Doug DeMuro?

  That's like, I got a lot of money and I don't care.

• 54:27Speaker 05

This is like Nick Rochon should have bought this car.

• 54:29Doug DeMuro?

Yeah, yeah. He was afraid of it though.

• 54:32Speaker 05

  Right.

• 54:32Doug DeMuro?

Uh, I agree. Those are surprisingly cheap. This is a 221, but your point is about 222s and you're right. Okay, Cannon, you got a market report for us?

• 54:38Speaker 05

Yes. We've sold a number of very interesting manual transmission cars recently. Sold a great V12 Vantage 6-speed, which was rare and very special. But this one, this is incredibly unusual. So this is an, as I always forget the chassis, this is F13.

• 54:52Speaker 04

  F13 is a.

• 54:53Speaker 05

F13, I think is the convertible.

• 54:54Speaker 04

  F12 was a coupe.

• 54:55Speaker 05

Thank you. I knew it was, yeah, I knew.

• 54:56Speaker 04

Okay, someone was gonna be in the obvious.

• 55:01Doug DeMuro?

He winked too, he didn't come on the camera but winked.

• 55:03Speaker 05

  Oh, he winked.

• 55:04Doug DeMuro?

  Winked from the wrong direction.

• 55:05Speaker 05

The credibility is gone with the wink, it's just odd. But anyway, most people, including you, did not realize that these are available with a 6B management transmission. Only for the North American market, though.

• 55:15Doug DeMuro?

I really thought they didn't offer these with stick. I mean, I knew by the time, it was years ago we had the conversation, but I was astonished.

• 55:21Speaker 05

Yes, they are exceedingly rare. And the fact that this one is a color with a 6B.

• 55:27Doug DeMuro?

With a good interior. And it's a convertible. I know people want coupes and the sedan was also, the M6 grand coupe sedan was also available with stick. I know people want the sedan or the coupe, but like, in SoCal, we want a convertible and you will never find another M6 convertible with a stick, ever.

• 55:41Speaker 05

Boy, did the people who bid on this car knew that. And it sold for 42, which most of these cars now are probably, I guess, selling in the, yeah.

• 55:47Doug DeMuro?

  Yeah, what's a 10? No, what's a 10? Look at that. What's a, what's an M6 F?

• 55:51Speaker 05

  F, yeah, 12, 13, so let's see, uh, I mean.

• 55:54Doug DeMuro?

We sell a lot of the V10s, but.

• 55:55Speaker 05

We sell an awful lot of the V10s.

• 55:57Doug DeMuro?

This was also a manual, but it was a coupe. We don't sell that many non, it turns out. Here's, here's a grand coupe that sold for only 22, and that's the most desirable buyback. So here's, here's, here's one that. Convertible for 20. So they're worth 20. So they're worth, so the, the stick doubles the value of the car.

• 56:10Speaker 05

25, yeah, so, yeah, doubles the value.

• 56:13Doug DeMuro?

What was the mileage on the blue one?

• 56:14Speaker 05

It was 51,000, so like, not low necessarily, uh, but.

• 56:18Doug DeMuro?

  So cool.

• 56:18Speaker 05

It's just, this is, I've, everybody tells me, it's like, oh, the DCT is so much, but I mean, it's true. BMW designed this car to work with the DCT, no question. But the fact that these exist, it, it, everybody knew it would hold, help hold its value. And boy, is that evident. And what a cool car you end up with. You get to row your own in the crazy.

• 56:37Doug DeMuro?

And this is a car that I think a lot of people truly would not think exists. I think most people think that by the time these M cars came out, like these, it was gone. But there were M6s, there were M5s, F10 M5s.

• 56:47Speaker 05

  Yep.

• 56:47Doug DeMuro?

They did it. And they come up very occasionally on cars.

• 56:50Speaker 05

  They bring the money.

• 56:51Doug DeMuro?

  And they bring the money.

• 56:52Speaker 05

I, I, admittedly, this is because I knew it existed every time I see one. I still walk by and look in the window and go, huh.

• 56:57Doug DeMuro?

  And it's never, yeah.

• 56:58Speaker 05

But if I looked at it and saw a stick, I.

• 57:00Doug DeMuro?

To be clear, I actually like the automatics. Yeah, yeah, it fits the car, but this is cooler.

• 57:04Speaker 05

But this is, yeah, exceptionally cool.

• 57:07Doug DeMuro?

Okay, we gotta move on to questions, questions, questions. Now, questions are sponsored by Kennen. And Kennen, personally, he wrote us a check. Thank you so much.

• 57:14Speaker 05

  No problem.

• 57:16Doug DeMuro?

Kennen is going to make a personal appearance in public this weekend at the San Diego Cars and Coffee at Elite Finish. I want to say more like the location, the time. I don't have time. We've got to move on to questions, but Kennen will be there.

• 57:26Speaker 05

  I will be there.

• 57:27Doug DeMuro?

  You chat about his M5.

• 57:28Speaker 05

Yes, I don't bite. My M5 will be there too.

• 57:30Doug DeMuro?

Okay, first question from Joey12. Joey12, Doug, you said your cars are no longer at the Cars and Bids headquarters. They're at your new garage at your house. Can we get a video of the new garage? No, I don't do, I don't do personal, yeah. I don't need people coming by. I, I, let me tell you, I've watched enough Stradman content to know you don't want to film anything at your house. Because Stradman says people come by every single day.

• 57:55Speaker 05

  That's a lot.

• 57:56Doug DeMuro?

  Go by Kennen's house.

• 57:57Speaker 05

  No.

• 57:58Doug DeMuro?

There's great stuff over there. There's great stuff over there. Okay, next question. Question for everyone. What is a car that absolutely, this is from Kennen's side piece, by the way.

• 58:10Speaker 04

  Sorry, Amway.

• 58:11Doug DeMuro?

Question for everyone. What is a car that absolutely deserves the hate and what are some cars that are under hated that should be hated more?

• 58:18Speaker 05

  Most McLarens?

• 58:19Speaker 04

The Pontiac Aztec should not be hated.

• 58:23Doug DeMuro?

Should be hated more, should not be hated.

• 58:25Speaker 05

Kind of beloved, become beloved in a weird way.

• 58:27Speaker 04

I do appreciate that it has. Thank you, Thaltopian, for helping do that.

• 58:29Speaker 05

  Well, and Bradwood, for honest.

• 58:31Speaker 04

Yeah. And Doug with that review.

• 58:33Speaker 05

  And Doug.

• 58:34Doug DeMuro?

What are other cars? People hate the PT Cruiser. Do we think that's over or under hated?

• 58:39Speaker 04

It's simultaneously under hated and over hated.

• 58:41Speaker 05

  Yeah, it's ironic.

• 58:42Speaker 04

If you hate it, I don't agree with like that you're hating it too much. If you're ambivalent about it, you might not hate it enough.

• 58:47Doug DeMuro?

What about Tesla? Everybody likes to hate Tesla these days. What do we think about that?

• 58:51Speaker 05

An interesting thing. Since things have changed politically and Elon Musk has become a little more involved, I've seen a lot of, I bought this car before Elon.

• 58:57Doug DeMuro?

Everybody has one of those bumper stickers in California now. You knew. I've seen hundreds of those bumper stickers. Nick put one on his Bentley.

• 59:04Speaker 05

Yeah, he did. Yeah, well, that's Nicky.

• 59:07Doug DeMuro?

You know what? You know what car I think is over hated? Two of them are right here in the office.

• 59:12Speaker 05

  A Prius.

• 59:13Doug DeMuro?

The 04 Prius, I think it's overhated. It was a tremendous car.

• 59:17Speaker 04

Why does anybody hate that car?

• 59:18Doug DeMuro?

It is a tremendous car. It was great in so many ways.

• 59:21Speaker 04

I think the regular people love it.

• 59:22Speaker 05

I'll tell you why. It was because it was thrust upon us as this was like-

• 59:25Doug DeMuro?

Thrust upon us by what? A company trying to sell cars?

• 59:28Speaker 05

Every celebrity in Hollywood had one to virtue signal that they can-

• 59:32Doug DeMuro?

You must buy this car? No, of course not.

• 59:33Speaker 05

Every celebrity had one to virtue signal and in doing it, but then they went and drove around in their Bentleys instead. That car was taken. It was shoved down-

• 59:41Doug DeMuro?

  By who? How? Why?

• 59:43Speaker 05

  Everybody.

• 59:44Doug DeMuro?

No, I agree. Hollywood made a thing of it.

• 59:45Speaker 05

Right. It was just seen as a weak, like, little car. And it was, and people hated it. And like, it was an easy car to buy.

• 59:51Doug DeMuro?

Car enthusiasm was gonna start to die out.

• 59:53Speaker 05

Exactly. It was just things to come.

• 59:55Doug DeMuro?

However, 20 years later, we know that's not true. Car enthusiasm is flourishing. And that car is such an amazing, practical car that you can get for 6 grand as long as you can keep the catalytic converter in it.

• 1:00:06Speaker 04

Right. If you live in San Francisco, good luck to you.

• 1:00:10Speaker 04

I disagree with literally everything you've said about the Prius.

• 1:00:12Doug DeMuro?

Except for the fact that regardless of how much you hate it, you hate it too much.

• 1:00:17Speaker 05

I don't hate it personally, like-

• 1:00:19Doug DeMuro?

I love it. It was a great car for the people. You know, one of the things that annoys me about car enthusiasts is that they hate on cars that they're not even intended for. You know, I taught my parents in a Lexus RX. Car enthusiasts hate that car. Fine, but my parents aren't cars. It's not who it's for. And it's actually a great car for a lot of people. And that's true of the Prius. Plus, you can camp in them.

• 1:00:35Speaker 04

What's the second car? The Juke?

• 1:00:37Speaker 05

  Oh, the Juke.

• 1:00:38Doug DeMuro?

The Nissan Juke was hated so greatly. In fact, it was hated. This is one time where people screwed. And this has happened a few times, where people have been so hateful that they screwed over themselves.

• 1:00:48Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:00:48Doug DeMuro?

They hated the Juke. The Juke's the stupidest, ugliest, idiotic, stupid, hideous, ridiculous car. And then you know what Nissan did after that? They came out with boring trash because they were so put off by the fact that everybody hated their cool design. They were like, fine, we're gonna give you the kicks. Pull up a picture of the kicks.

• 1:01:04Speaker 04

  No, don't. There's all-

• 1:01:05Doug DeMuro?

Look, trash. Boring, bad trash. The Juke was interesting.

• 1:01:10Speaker 05

They overcorrected, but it is a heinous car that looks like a bug that needs to be squashed.

• 1:01:15Doug DeMuro?

  It's cool!

• 1:01:16Speaker 05

  It's hideous.

• 1:01:17Speaker 04

The second part of what you said is true about how it looks. It's not hideous as a result.

• 1:01:22Speaker 05

Offensive. The interior is. And it's built like absolute garbage. It is a terrible car. Wow, Kenan is not coming out pro car. I hated it since it came out. I hate it now.

• 1:01:33Doug DeMuro?

But this is what happens. People hate on cars like the Aztec, like the Juke, where an automaker takes a risk. And then the automaker says, okay, fine, everybody hates our risk. We're gonna go back to making square box boring crap. And then they do. And that's how you end up with the Nissan Kicks. And by the way, drive around, there's rogues everywhere. There's Kicks everywhere. You ruined us. You ruined our lives.

• 1:01:51Speaker 05

Nah, they made the R35 at the same time. Like, they could have gone down a different path. They also had Infiniti to draw from. Infiniti made great looking cars throughout that period of time. Do something more like that. Don't, just because it was. Cheap cars should be weird. You're not trying to make cheap cars beautiful. There is no such thing as a beautiful cheap car. It has never happened. No such thing as a beautiful cheap car. No such thing as a beautiful cheap car. There are so many beautiful cheap cars. Name two.

• 1:02:14Speaker 04

  The Fiat Panda.

• 1:02:15Speaker 05

That is one. But it's not beautiful. Well, any of the Fords from the Aston Martin looking, like, appear, look all gross.

• 1:02:23Doug DeMuro?

Those cars, the few, I mean, those cars are more expensive. The Juke is an entry level little subcompact thing that was trying to mobilize like 23 year olds in their first job. And they wanted it to be cool and quirky and cute, like the cube, honestly. And then people complain and complain. And so what Nissan ends up doing is giving us the Sentra and the Kicks. And the Rogue Sport. The Rogue Sport is one of the great bad things foisted upon human beings.

• 1:02:46Speaker 05

But a pretty good looking car.

• 1:02:47Doug DeMuro?

  It is terrible.

• 1:02:48Speaker 05

But it's a pretty good looking car.

• 1:02:49Doug DeMuro?

  It is horrible.

• 1:02:50Speaker 05

But it's a pretty good looking car.

• 1:02:52Doug DeMuro?

You get my point. Cars, you wanna know overhated cars? Anything that was trying to be cool and weird, that people hated into oblivion, and then we got replaced with boring stuff. Those cars are overhated.

• 1:03:02Speaker 04

  Fiat multiple redesign.

• 1:03:03Doug DeMuro?

Fiat multiple. The Fiat multiple is the best example of all time.

• 1:03:07Speaker 05

Quirky, people say they don't like it, though they buy it, and then you have.

• 1:03:11Doug DeMuro?

And then you get the redesign, which screwed up everything about the original that we loved, that platypus mofa.

• 1:03:16Speaker 05

  Yup, yup.

• 1:03:17Doug DeMuro?

Okay, next up, some great questions this week. We're gonna do a few more, maybe three more. Uh, from AB6002, hey Doug, any update on the V8 Signet? You wanna tell the story?

• 1:03:26Speaker 05

Yes, so we talked about it recently. You explored it with Nick, that the Aston Martin V8, there was a Signet that was produced by Aston Martin for one customer, and they used an Aston Martin V8 Vantage. It was, was it full chassis? Just the V8, no, just the motor. Just the engine. Unbelievable they built one car for us.

• 1:03:42Doug DeMuro?

  Built one.

• 1:03:43Speaker 05

The guy that paid for it.

• 1:03:44Doug DeMuro?

Well, tell the story about what happened.

• 1:03:45Speaker 05

You have said if this car ever came up for sale, you would purchase it.

• 1:03:49Doug DeMuro?

I would want to, and I do want to.

• 1:03:50Speaker 05

  And you do want it.

• 1:03:51Doug DeMuro?

  Well.

• 1:03:52Speaker 05

  Somebody. So do other people.

• 1:03:53Doug DeMuro?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:53Speaker 05

  It transacted instantly.

• 1:03:55Doug DeMuro?

  Gone.

• 1:03:56Speaker 05

  Which is not a surprise.

• 1:03:57Doug DeMuro?

Sold in 30 seconds, apparently for full ask, which was about 600,000 United States dollars.

• 1:04:01Speaker 05

Which, yeah, it's a lot for.

• 1:04:03Doug DeMuro?

And to be honest, I think it's cool as hell. I think it might honestly be worth 600. I'm in a position right now where I'm not necessarily trying to spend that on another car. I've got a lot of expensive cars. Plus, the real problem would have, and I'm off cars, except of course, for one of those in Earth.

• 1:04:18Speaker 05

  Oh, my God.

• 1:04:19Speaker 04

  Not in caviar?

• 1:04:20Doug DeMuro?

If that one wasn't finished in caviar or perhaps Nori, we don't know.

• 1:04:24Speaker 04

  Finished in Nori, obviously.

• 1:04:27Doug DeMuro?

  I would just keep it.

• 1:04:28Speaker 05

Also, for your uses, a normal Signet probably would cover it.

• 1:04:31Doug DeMuro?

The problem also was that importing it, I think, for someone who's off cars, going through that process would have been really annoying.

• 1:04:37Speaker 05

  Really agitating.

• 1:04:38Doug DeMuro?

Uh, next question, uh, from Nick Whitney Zero. Doug, as you love the cross-country drive, would you ever do a cannonball run? No, I abide by the laws. There was a time when I thought that would be cool, but it is long past.

• 1:04:51Speaker 04

Can I answer a question that's in here that you're not gonna answer?

• 1:04:53Doug DeMuro?

  Which question is it?

• 1:04:54Speaker 04

It's a question from Minnesota Joe, which is, why does the Cars and Bids app rain money when I shake my phone?

• 1:04:59Doug DeMuro?

Why does the Cars and Bids app rain money when I shake my phone?

• 1:05:02Speaker 04

  Did you know it does?

• 1:05:03Doug DeMuro?

  No!

• 1:05:04Speaker 04

  It does this.

• 1:05:05Doug DeMuro?

  It's great.

• 1:05:06Speaker 04

  It's the best.

• 1:05:07Doug DeMuro?

Folks, the Cars and Bids app is so cool that if you shake your phone, it rains money. Do it.

• 1:05:14Speaker 05

Oh, it's raining money. It's raining money.

• 1:05:17Speaker 04

If you, also, if you shake your phone a bunch, it will eventually try to send a bug report.

• 1:05:20Doug DeMuro?

Because we have a sense of humor?

• 1:05:22Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:05:22Doug DeMuro?

You know what? I bet this is the kind of thing people are gonna complain about, and then we're gonna have to take it out and nobody has ever.

• 1:05:26Speaker 04

  It works beautifully.

• 1:05:27Speaker 05

  It does work.

• 1:05:28Speaker 04

It's fun. And it's, it's sometimes it pops up when you don't expect it, which is extra fun. Like, in that, like, you, like, shook your phone but didn't think.

• 1:05:34Speaker 05

  I dropped my phone.

• 1:05:34Speaker 04

I bought it. And it's so fun, and I love it.

• 1:05:37Doug DeMuro?

I don't usually shake my phone. I've never experienced this in my life. I can't wait to try it. The Cars and Bids app, to download it, you go to.

• 1:05:43Speaker 04

No, I'm sorry, we have to move on. Shout out to our designer and mobile engineer, Brian and Z, respectfully, who did a great job.

• 1:05:50Doug DeMuro?

Shout out individual people. I want to shout out to my mom. Uh, no, let's do one more question or perhaps two. Oh, from Palagi. Doug, you don't review the new Tesla Model Y Juniper because you don't like Elon anymore? Um, dude, is this even out?

• 1:06:05Speaker 04

  Not in the US yet.

• 1:06:06Doug DeMuro?

No, I haven't reviewed it because it's not available. It cars to be sold in China. And the dude's like, why aren't you reviewing it? You hate Elon?

• 1:06:12Speaker 04

Jay Leno, I think may have got one. I don't know. Like to to to review. I think there's a couple of loners floating around barely.

• 1:06:17Speaker 05

  Happens to be patient.

• 1:06:19Doug DeMuro?

Jay gets all the good stuff. No, I'll do it. I'll do it.

• 1:06:21Speaker 04

By the way, Tesla has massively lowered existing Model Y prices or increased.

• 1:06:25Doug DeMuro?

Did you see that? I was, I went on the Model Y configurator the other day to compare it against that Audi Q6 that I have right now. And, um, the prices are wild. The old Model Y you can buy, it's like 20 grand less than the new Model Y.

• 1:06:37Speaker 04

They want to clear out all inventory before the new one comes.

• 1:06:40Doug DeMuro?

  I will say.

• 1:06:41Speaker 04

Which is in the next month and a half.

• 1:06:42Doug DeMuro?

The dealer, the, the non-dealer, uh, situation, allowing them to kind of mess with prices like in real time is a pretty good situation.

• 1:06:51Speaker 04

At the same time, it makes it so public when you do so.

• 1:06:53Doug DeMuro?

And frustrating for people who paid more five months ago.

• 1:06:56Speaker 04

  Or yesterday.

• 1:06:57Doug DeMuro?

Uh, okay. I want to do maybe either, either two more questions or one more

• 1:07:01Speaker 04

  Good one.

• 1:07:01Doug DeMuro?

Slow one. Two fast, one slow. AB6002, question for Doug and Kenan. Is modern Ferraris biggest competition coming from within its own legacy? Many enthusiasts seem to prefer Ferrari models from the last two decades. Do you think modern Ferraris will ever be able to capture the magic of their predecessors? My answer to this question is no. I think if you look at the people who are buying new Ferraris, they don't even know what the old Ferraris are. I drive around my Carrera GT all the time and people in new Porsches don't even notice it. And I think that happened. Like, if you asked a new, 98% of new Ferrari owners to name the supercars, they couldn't. Like, I don't, I think that there are some people who are, who could afford new Ferraris, who are buying old ones. Certainly there are some.

• 1:07:38Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:07:39Doug DeMuro?

But I think the vast majority, that is not the case.

• 1:07:41Speaker 05

And certainly there's the young enthusiasts who are buying them and do know about the older cars. Um, but no, I totally agree with that. I think it's coming from McLaren and, and other manufacturers, Porsche probably, and other manufacturers more so than from within the back catalog.

• 1:07:54Doug DeMuro?

  And just buying more crypto.

• 1:07:57Speaker 04

  Sure.

• 1:07:57Doug DeMuro?

Uh, okay. Last question. This one's for me and Filippo from Big Skier Guy. What version of the GMT 800 would you buy?

• 1:08:06Speaker 04

There's a correct answer to this, Filippo.

• 1:08:07Doug DeMuro?

  Oh, wow. Oh, wow.

• 1:08:09Speaker 04

  We're aligned.

• 1:08:10Doug DeMuro?

We're aligned. Would you buy if you were had to purchase a brand new one off the lot? The GMT 800, for those of you who don't know, was the General Motors truck and SUV platform from 99 to oh, five, oh, six, oh, six.

• 1:08:22Speaker 04

  Oh, six.

• 1:08:22Doug DeMuro?

Uh, GMT 800, uh, largely, uh, bad vehicles that run forever.

• 1:08:28Speaker 04

No, no, great vehicles that also run forever.

• 1:08:30Doug DeMuro?

No, but I mean, they had bad interiors, they had giant panel gaps, but they are tremendously durable Mofas. Like, there's not a single one of these that isn't on the road with 964,000 miles.

• 1:08:39Speaker 05

I suspect I know what the answer is to this.

• 1:08:41Speaker 04

  You sure do.

• 1:08:41Doug DeMuro?

The answer is, okay, what are you gonna say? Let's say it on one. Three, two, one.

• 1:08:45Speaker 04

  Quadrusteer.

• 1:08:46Doug DeMuro?

Suburban, quadrusteer. That's it. That's it, right there.

• 1:08:50Speaker 04

  25, find out.

• 1:08:50Doug DeMuro?

There's a lot of great GMT 800 vehicles. You know what I was gonna say?

• 1:08:54Speaker 04

Z71 Suburban, I would also accept.

• 1:08:55Doug DeMuro?

  Z71 Burr?

• 1:08:56Speaker 04

Which we had one, and I loved it, and I stared at it.

• 1:08:59Doug DeMuro?

You know one that you're not ever gonna think of? The anteater front Suburban that was only sold in Mexico. Kenan, pull it up.

• 1:09:08Speaker 04

  God, thank you.

• 1:09:09Doug DeMuro?

Mexico GMT 800 Suburban, I bet it shows up. I saw one on the street here in San Diego like three years ago. Took a picture of it. It was incredible for me. So, so, they offered these, did you know about this?

• 1:09:21Speaker 04

  From that gen Silverado.

• 1:09:23Doug DeMuro?

Right. So, the Silverado in the US was facelifted to have this front end.

• 1:09:27Speaker 04

  That is not.

• 1:09:28Doug DeMuro?

That's my picture. I took that picture.

• 1:09:33Doug DeMuro?

The Silverado was facelifted in the US, it's too grainy though, pull out two different ones. The Silverado was facelifted in the US in like 2004 to have this front end, but for god knows what reason, because it's GM, no, it's none of these, it's only a couple, it's this one, this red one. For some reason, they didn't facelift the Suburban in the US. Uh, and, but in Mexico and apparently Latin America, because that looks like Costa Rica, they did.

• 1:09:54Speaker 04

  Oh, it's so much worse.

• 1:09:55Doug DeMuro?

It's worse, but it would be so cool. I would flex on you so hard in my head that.

• 1:09:59Speaker 04

A quadrusteer with the four-wheel steering, 2500, 8.1 liter V8, would be great.

• 1:10:04Doug DeMuro?

  That's the answer.

• 1:10:05Speaker 04

  The regular suburban Z71.

• 1:10:09Doug DeMuro?

  That's the second answer.

• 1:10:10Speaker 04

  Also looks so good.

• 1:10:11Doug DeMuro?

Or Tahoe, honestly, a good Tahoe.

• 1:10:12Speaker 04

  It's a good Tahoe.

• 1:10:13Doug DeMuro?

  But, but.

• 1:10:14Speaker 04

  God, look at that car.

• 1:10:15Doug DeMuro?

I know, I know, dude, when I was a kid, that was the coolest thing in the world. But the anteater, go back to the anteater. I want to see it again, or the cat eye they call it.

• 1:10:22Speaker 05

I closed out of it already.

• 1:10:23Doug DeMuro?

You closed this beautiful vehicle. Look at this.

• 1:10:27Speaker 04

Thank you for watching this week's podcast. It's certainly our best ever.

• 1:10:30Doug DeMuro?

Dude, there are GMT 800 fans who are sitting here going, I didn't even know they made that. Yeah, they did, and if I had one, I would flex on Filippo. I would show up at the office, I'd honk the horn, I would flash the Eli, the non, the halogen running lights.

• 1:10:41Speaker 04

Halogens. Unfortunately, you would be too ugly for you to look at, so you wouldn't drive it.

• 1:10:44Doug DeMuro?

It's not an attractive car. I actually think the pickups were pretty attractive.

• 1:10:47Speaker 04

It works on the pickups, for sure.

• 1:10:50Doug DeMuro?

They, they looked at this and they said, you know, this works on the pickups. It doesn't really work on the SUV. Let's give it to Costa Rica.

• 1:10:56Speaker 04

The regular GMT 800 is such a beautiful classic automobile.

• 1:11:00Doug DeMuro?

Although I prefer the previous gen, which was the GMT 400.

• 1:11:03Speaker 04

  Good gen.

• 1:11:03Doug DeMuro?

You're wrong. Uh, it would, this was definitely a better vehicle in every way. Okay, uh, that's the answer to our questions, eh, all of our questions.

• 1:11:10Speaker 04

  All of them.

• 1:11:11Doug DeMuro?

All of them, the most important ones. Ken, any parting thoughts?

• 1:11:14Speaker 05

  It's our 52nd podcast.

• 1:11:15Doug DeMuro?

This is our 52nd podcast. We've been podcasting for a year and you want to know something? This was our best episode yet. Goodbye, everyone.

• 1:11:24Speaker 04

I got to talk about EVs.

• 1:11:26Doug DeMuro?

I got to talk about EVs.
