Brandi Carlile

We have a Grammy legend on the podcast this week, 11 time winner, it’s singer/songwriter Brandi Carlile! Brandi schlepped to New Cross from Windsor where she was staying with her best friend, Sir Elton John. She is about to release a brand new album with Elton, and we heard all about how the album came about - and that the entire process was filmed for a documentary too. Brandi also talked about living on a compound in Washington state with all of her close friends and family, that she got married to her wife in London, all about her regular jamming sessions with Joni Mitchell (with wine and Mexican food dished up for everyone!), that it was thanks to Sir Paul McCartney that she met her wife, plus she has THE best idea pitch to Ben & Jerry’s for their new Ice Cream flavour - Candy Bar-lile! Brandi & Elton’s new album ‘Who Believes In Angels’ is released on the 4th April, and you can catch Brandi on her UK & European tour in June & July. Hosted on Acast. • 0:35Jessie Ware?

Hello and welcome to Table Manners. I'm Jessie Ware and Mum has given me daggers.

• 0:41Jessie Ware?

  You look very glamorous, Mum.

• 0:42Speaker 02

  Do I look glamorous?

• 0:43Jessie Ware?

You do. Your hair looks good.

• 0:45Speaker 02

  Does it?

• 0:45Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 0:46Speaker 02

I don't know why, I've just been in the wind and the rain.

• 0:49Jessie Ware?

Wind swept. We're at my house tonight. I've cooked.

• 0:52Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 0:53Jessie Ware?

No problem. We have the phenomenal Brandy Carlisle coming on. And apparently she's only five minutes late because she's stuck in traffic. Because she has come from Sir Elton John's house in Windsor. So we'll have to ask her whether he gave her a packed lunch to see her on her way.

• 1:09Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:10Jessie Ware?

And frankly, she's been staying there all week. And we're talking to her because she has a new album out on the 4th of April with Elton.

• 1:19Speaker 02

It's a fabulous album. I listened to it yesterday. Their voices meld together.

• 1:25Jessie Ware?

  Oh.

• 1:26Speaker 02

  Euphoric.

• 1:27Jessie Ware?

It's so exciting. The production is so brilliant. The singing, the songwriting, all of it is so beautiful. Also, they're honouring lots of queer musicians. Little Richard, Laura Nyro. So it's kind of honouring them as well. The album's called Who Believes in Angels? And they're just, it's absolutely gorgeous. And I'm sure Brandy's going to tell us, but she's been the biggest fan of Elton John since she was 12 and discovered him and sung Honky Cat at the talent show in a white suit. Anyway, it's amazing, but I'm very interested in Brandy's upbringing. She moved a lot when she was a child. And we're going to be talking to her all about this album, all about her life and...

• 2:12Jessie Ware?

How she's finding England because she got married here.

• 2:15Speaker 02

  She must love it here.

• 2:17Jessie Ware?

Well, do you know what I've made?

• 2:18Speaker 02

She's not fussy, is she? We didn't get any dietary requirements, thank God, yeah.

• 2:23Jessie Ware?

I've done a new recipe by Sophie Wybird, it's in her book, Tucking In. It's spiced meatballs with dates and chickpeas.

• 2:34Speaker 02

  Delicious.

• 2:35Jessie Ware?

However, I didn't read that it was beef mince and I did lamb.

• 2:39Speaker 02

I think that lends itself better.

• 2:41Jessie Ware?

Well, I think that's okay, but still, I wonder.

• 2:43Speaker 02

Beef can be a bit hard when it, when they're cooked.

• 2:46Jessie Ware?

Do you think they're gonna get hard now?

• 2:47Speaker 02

  No.

• 2:48Jessie Ware?

You're just saying that to me, aren't you?

• 2:49Speaker 02

No, just turn it, have you turned it off?

• 2:51Jessie Ware?

  Turned it off.

• 2:51Speaker 02

  It's fine.

• 2:52Jessie Ware?

Anyway, I've done it with couscous and toasted flates almonds. I'm gonna put some parsley and coriander on the top and some cavolo nero. And then I've done, because I thought Brandy's probably had a crumble in her time here. Um, I did a, do you think Elton Tuxton took a crumble? Well, we'll find out in a minute, Brandy Carlisle on Tavman.

• 3:25Speaker 03

Cheers, ladies. It's a joy to be here with you, thank you.

• 3:29Speaker 02

  Such a pleasure.

• 3:30Jessie Ware?

  We are so touched.

• 3:31Speaker 02

  Honoured.

• 3:32Jessie Ware?

That you decided to not stay in with Elton tonight and have a takeaway and you've come all the way to South East London.

• 3:37Speaker 03

  No drinks at Elton.

• 3:40Speaker 02

Oh, thank, God will give you a straw on the way home. How have you managed all week with no drink?

• 3:45Jessie Ware?

  Oh, Mum, stop!

• 3:48Speaker 03

Well, I had one last night because I went out for dinner, you know, with Cat's mum and Cat's mum will get you wasted, so.

• 3:54Jessie Ware?

Well, let's talk about your wife.

• 3:55Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 3:56Jessie Ware?

  A Brit, a fellow Brit.

• 3:58Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 3:58Jessie Ware?

And, and she's here, um, you got married in the UK.

• 4:02Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 4:02Jessie Ware?

  Was it Chelsea Town Hall?

• 4:03Speaker 03

  Chelsea Town Hall, yeah.

• 4:04Jessie Ware?

  That's iconic.

• 4:05Speaker 03

  Well done, well researched.

• 4:06Speaker 02

Best one to get married at.

• 4:07Speaker 03

Yeah, and then we, we kind of walked down the steps and we got in a vintage double decker bus and we drank loads of champagne and like, drove around the city and then we wound up in like a crypt.

• 4:17Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 4:17Speaker 03

  In uh Bleeding Heart Square.

• 4:19Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah, I've been there.

• 4:20Jessie Ware?

  Where is it?

• 4:21Speaker 02

  There's a pub, but there's a pub and a restaurant.

• 4:23Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 4:23Speaker 02

And you walk down an alley.

• 4:24Speaker 03

  What area?

• 4:25Speaker 02

It's but it's in the city, near Hatton Garden.

• 4:28Speaker 03

Yeah, we had a little dance party.

• 4:29Speaker 02

And it's called Bleeding Heart Square.

• 4:31Speaker 03

  Yeah, it's cool.

• 4:32Jessie Ware?

What was your first dance? Are we allowed to know?

• 4:34Speaker 03

Uh, I think we we were kind of dancing more to like things like Like a Prayer and, you know, we were dancing to like a lot of Whitney Houston and eighties music and just like holes in the socks, blisters on our feet, walking home without our shoes.

• 4:46Speaker 02

But it's a good restaurant there, isn't it?

• 4:48Speaker 03

  Yeah, it was amazing, yeah.

• 4:49Speaker 02

  Did they do the catering?

• 4:51Speaker 03

  They did, yeah.

• 4:52Speaker 02

And what did you have? Can you remember?

• 4:53Speaker 03

Yeah, I can remember. We had some steaks and like roasted carrots and like a salad with pomegranates. And then my favorite thing about it was our wedding cake was made of cheese instead of cake.

• 5:03Speaker 02

  Like literally like.

• 5:04Speaker 03

Yeah, it was it was awesome.

• 5:06Speaker 02

  Do you like British cheese?

• 5:08Speaker 03

  I love it, yeah.

• 5:09Speaker 02

  What's your favorite British cheese?

• 5:10Speaker 03

I mean, you're gonna embarrass me with the name. Give me some.

• 5:13Speaker 02

  Cheddar.

• 5:14Jessie Ware?

  Do you like a cheddar?

• 5:15Speaker 03

Yeah, but I feel like that's an American thing, Vermont.

• 5:18Speaker 02

  No, it's cheddar's British.

• 5:20Speaker 03

  Did I break a rule?

• 5:22Speaker 02

We have a place called Cheddar Gorge, which is where it comes from.

• 5:25Speaker 03

Okay, you own it, you own it. Ding ding ding.

• 5:28Jessie Ware?

So, so you've uh you have just been in the car for a long time because you've been in Windsor.

• 5:32Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 5:33Jessie Ware?

  Staying with Sir Elton.

• 5:35Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 5:35Jessie Ware?

  Your beloved friend.

• 5:37Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 5:38Jessie Ware?

Does he have a full fridge?

• 5:40Speaker 03

Yeah, and you can get in it and you walk in it. It's like a room.

• 5:43Jessie Ware?

  Shut up.

• 5:43Speaker 02

  Oh, my god.

• 5:44Speaker 03

Yeah, and it's got all the good things in there, all the things he can't eat, but that we can eat, and it's just delicious. And he's got a full pantry with like loads of chocolate and you can, it's kind of heaven, actually. It's like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

• 5:56Speaker 02

  Does Elton cook?

• 6:00Speaker 03

  No, no, he doesn't.

• 6:02Speaker 02

Has he got a good cook?

• 6:03Speaker 03

Yeah, he does. This lovely guy called Mark. In fact, um uh yesterday morning, I was nervous for the Graham Norton show and.

• 6:10Jessie Ware?

  Were you?

• 6:11Speaker 03

Yeah, I woke up and and I was too nervous to eat and Elton's like staff, they just sat me down. They're like, right, you're eating a toasted croissant with ham, you're gonna have a banana, you're gonna have a glass of water. Like, they were just it's they're the sweetest people.

• 6:23Jessie Ware?

  Do you get quite nervous?

• 6:25Speaker 03

  Yeah, I get nervous, yeah.

• 6:26Jessie Ware?

I find that's, I mean, your voice is heavenly, it's transcendental, and also, well, your lyric, uh all of it is just, so for me, I kind of think as a singer who does get nervous. And can't always control what comes out of my mouth when I'm singing, you know.

• 6:43Speaker 03

Your voice is incredibly strong. I listened today.

• 6:46Jessie Ware?

Well, thank you, but I just, um, you're so accomplished and brilliant and it's um, interesting to hear that you still get nervous for like a TV show that like, yeah.

• 6:56Speaker 03

  I think you have to.

• 6:57Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 6:58Speaker 03

It's especially to sing, you know, um, because you can't convince people of your humanity if you're not right on the edge. If you don't understand what the psychosympathetic nervous system is going through when you open your mouth to sing in front of people. It's like you could, maybe we could potentially lose that um, that feeling of of uh, otherworldliness that you feel when you do something so risky. And I don't ever wanna lose that. I love the way that feels.

• 7:24Jessie Ware?

How do you feel when you finish a tour though? Are you absolutely shattered?

• 7:27Speaker 03

Oh, grumpy and tired and and then the very last day I get this kind of like second wind, maybe the last couple of shows where I wanted to keep going and I get sad and you, do you have the same?

• 7:37Jessie Ware?

The blues. Yeah, you get all blues. Yeah.

• 7:40Speaker 03

We might all be the same.

• 7:41Speaker 02

Are you, are you touring this year with this new?

• 7:43Jessie Ware?

Yeah, Royal Albert Hall mum. But.

• 7:46Speaker 03

I just got word that my whole tour sold out today.

• 7:49Jessie Ware?

  Myself too.

• 7:50Speaker 03

Yeah, on the way here, they told me in the car.

• 7:52Jessie Ware?

  That's amazing.

• 7:53Speaker 03

So excited. I didn't know what happened.

• 7:55Speaker 02

Are you touring in Britain, all of Britain, all Europe, Britain and the States?

• 7:59Speaker 03

Um, not the States, actually. I'm just coming over, over here to you guys. Yeah, I'm doing Royal Albert Hall. And um, a bunch of Manchester and Birmingham and Dublin, Glasgow. Uh, and then I'm gonna go over to Europe and I'm gonna, I'm gonna do some cities over there, Amsterdam, Copenhagen for the first time, which would be really cool, Paris.

• 8:17Jessie Ware?

  You're playing Vega in Copenhagen.

• 8:19Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 8:20Jessie Ware?

Babe, when I tell you the greatest backstage catering.

• 8:23Speaker 03

  Really?

• 8:24Jessie Ware?

  Ever had.

• 8:25Speaker 03

  Oh, I live for that.

• 8:25Jessie Ware?

They have, you feel like you're in no, they've got like flaming juniper berry bushes.

• 8:30Speaker 03

  What?

• 8:31Jessie Ware?

And venison on. It's banging. You're going to love it. Don't be nervous that day.

• 8:36Speaker 03

  Yeah, okay, I won't.

• 8:38Speaker 02

  Are you a big foodie?

• 8:39Speaker 03

I am. I love my food.

• 8:42Speaker 02

What's your favorite sort of food?

• 8:44Speaker 03

My favorite sort of food? Oh, I'm very kind of day and date, like it really, it it kind of depends on what's going on. But I think that there are some basics. I love some some basic, simple foods. Like I love oysters in any preparation. Oysters and champagne, just like beautiful. I love anything with uh tomatoes. Big into seafood and shellfish, but I my favorite thing to cook is a steak. Like I can make a mean steak.

• 9:08Speaker 02

Which cut of steak do you have?

• 9:10Speaker 03

  I prefer ribeye to eat.

• 9:12Speaker 02

  Yeah, me too.

• 9:13Speaker 03

  Yeah, right, to a filet.

• 9:14Speaker 02

  It's, yeah.

• 9:15Speaker 03

  Because that fat.

• 9:16Speaker 02

  It's the fat makes it.

• 9:18Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 9:18Speaker 02

  Tender as well, I think.

• 9:20Speaker 03

But have you have, have you?

• 9:21Speaker 02

It's more tasty, I think, than filet.

• 9:23Speaker 03

I do do. And and the texture I like a lot better too. And I don't mind eating fat. I actually like it. Delicious. But do you find that um have you gone off rare and medium rare steak? I have recently.

• 9:36Speaker 02

  No.

• 9:37Jessie Ware?

So what are you going into your well done era?

• 9:39Speaker 03

I think I'm in my medium era. As I've gotten older, I've, oh, okay, actually, I went to this amazing steakhouse in L A called um, what is it called? Boa. And they have like a s- a steak simona that will come to your table and talk you out of ordering rare or medium rare cuts. If you get really high quality beef, because they want that fat to to kind of permeate the meat. They want that to be seasoned internally with that fat. And when you get a medium rare or rare steak, you're just kind of eating congealed fat. You don't get the flavor.

• 10:11Speaker 02

Okay, I like, I like, go to Argentina.

• 10:14Speaker 03

  Yeah, okay.

• 10:14Jessie Ware?

  They always overcook it.

• 10:16Speaker 02

Overcook it completely, yeah. If you said rare, they actually would not understand what you're talking about.

• 10:21Jessie Ware?

You're disrespecting a whole load of people, mum.

• 10:24Speaker 02

When I went to restaurants, I said rare.

• 10:26Jessie Ware?

I think they understand, they just do it differently.

• 10:28Speaker 02

They didn't want to do it. They kind of.

• 10:30Jessie Ware?

No, if you ordering medium, it's gonna be a well done there. It's like you go on.

• 10:35Speaker 03

So I would go medium rare. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I've I've taken to do that. I'm I'm all about the medium now.

• 10:40Speaker 02

How often do you eat red meat, though?

• 10:42Speaker 03

Like kind of a lot. A few times, yeah, a few times a week. I have like really low eye iron. I have just always have. My mom and sister do too. So I love red meat, yeah.

• 10:51Jessie Ware?

Um. Let's talk about your family, growing up, travelling.

• 10:55Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 10:55Jessie Ware?

A lot of different places. What was it, fourteen homes in fourteen years?

• 10:59Speaker 03

Yeah, like, yeah, we moved fourteen times from the time I was born to when I moved out of my uh parents' house at seventeen. And real.

• 11:07Jessie Ware?

Why, why did you move so much?

• 11:09Speaker 03

Well, there were always different reasons, you know, my parents, they um, they're amazing people, they're fun. They're with us still, they're together, and they're unpredictable, they're like um eternal teenagers. They were really young when they had us kids, and I'm the oldest of three kids. And it just kind of felt like growing up with complicated charismatic teenagers. They were always changing their mind and in jobs and life and. Kind of hitting the skids and we were either getting evicted or moving, or there was a controversy, there was always something. Kind of chaotic and intense happening, so we uh we'd just kind of take flight, you know.

• 11:49Jessie Ware?

What was your dad trained to do?

• 11:52Speaker 03

My dad, um, when I was born, he was a Boeing machinist, he worked on airplanes.

• 11:57Jessie Ware?

  Oh, wow.

• 11:58Speaker 03

And um it somewhere around, maybe around eleven or twelve, we moved. Out to the like, deep into the country, like into the woods. And he took up construction, so I had a construction dad and my mom was a stay at home mom.

• 12:12Jessie Ware?

  Was this all around Seattle?

• 12:14Speaker 03

Ish, you know, like, we say Seattle, but really I live in like a really rural part of Washington state.

• 12:20Jessie Ware?

Okay. It's so beautiful, isn't it?

• 12:22Speaker 03

It is beautiful, oh my gosh, guys.

• 12:23Jessie Ware?

Been on a tour bus, you go through and all those trees when you're kind of coming through from where's the spot, uh where would I be driving from if I'm on a splitter bus?

• 12:31Speaker 03

So if you come from east, you're gonna go over Snoqualmie Pass, you're gonna see the Cascade Mountain Range. And um that's definitely where you ended up through going through North Bend, and that's where I live is right in that area, at the foothills of the Cascade Mountain Range.

• 12:45Jessie Ware?

  Wow.

• 12:45Speaker 03

Yeah, so you're talking about what my place looks like.

• 12:49Jessie Ware?

And that was incredibly inspiring to you.

• 12:51Speaker 03

It was incredibly inspiring to me, and I've, I've always lived there, and I probably always will, I've, I've lived in the same log cabin for twenty two years. Because, of course, I moved so much as a kid that I'm like, right, I'm an adult, no one's making me move. And my mom and dad, they love my house, and so everybody kind of gathers at my place for holidays and, and uh we host and everything.

• 13:10Jessie Ware?

But everybody all around you gathers in the same place, you're in this compound.

• 13:15Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 13:16Jessie Ware?

So who lives in the compound?

• 13:19Speaker 02

No, and the Alanis Morissette lives in a very similar setup.

• 13:23Speaker 03

  Oh, is that right?

• 13:23Speaker 02

  She's got lots of people.

• 13:25Speaker 03

  Well, that tracks.

• 13:25Speaker 02

Living around. Yeah, so how many people are living there? You've got your log cabin?

• 13:32Speaker 03

Yes, okay, so I've got like my log cabin that I live in with my wife and two girls. And and then on this, like, say it's like a hundred acres. I don't know how, you know, acres.

• 13:41Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 13:42Speaker 03

So like a hundred acres, so that's a lot of acres.

• 13:45Speaker 02

  That's a lot of acres.

• 13:46Speaker 03

Yeah, and my band, we're twin brothers, they live there.

• 13:50Speaker 02

Who are kind of part that you've talked about them being.

• 13:53Speaker 03

Yeah, one's married to my sister and then also in my band I have a, so one, my basically, my two band members, the twins. One is married to my little sister. And the other one is married to a woman called Hannah, who's just kind of like our sister through marriage. And then this is gonna get really strange.

• 14:12Speaker 02

  I'm into it.

• 14:13Speaker 03

And then my cellist is married to Catherine's sister, my wife's sister.

• 14:18Speaker 02

  Oh, my gosh, wow.

• 14:19Speaker 03

And then my engineer is married to Catherine's other sister, and they all live there.

• 14:24Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 14:25Speaker 03

So we're all married to each other and working together. Well, and it happens, it does, it does happen. That is weird when that happens.

• 14:34Speaker 02

What do you do? You just go to a different acre?

• 14:36Speaker 03

Well, we all have the same therapist.

• 14:41Speaker 03

  She's called Pam.

• 14:43Speaker 02

Does she live on the compound?

• 14:44Speaker 03

She doesn't, no. She lives on one of the San Juan Islands and every time the shit hits the fan, it's like, well, we better call Pam.

• 14:51Speaker 02

  That's amazing.

• 14:53Speaker 03

  Yeah, it's dark.

• 14:56Speaker 02

I was listening to Ariana Grande today and she got nominated for her Oscar.

• 15:01Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah.

• 15:01Speaker 02

They said, you must have had loads of texts. I said, oh, yeah, from everyone, even my gynecologist. So who, when you got nominated for your Oscar, who was texting you?

• 15:12Speaker 03

  Oh, my god.

• 15:12Speaker 02

  Did you ring first?

• 15:13Speaker 03

I'll tell you what, they come out of the woodwork when you get an Oscar nomination. Yeah, and I have given my number to everyone I've ever met since I was nineteen years old.

• 15:20Speaker 02

  Right.

• 15:21Speaker 03

So I had maybe a thousand texts, just from school friends and doctors and distant cousins and and just everyone I've ever met, old radio DJs that are like retired for twenty years. Yeah, I don't even know who came first.

• 15:34Speaker 02

Who was the one that you rang first?

• 15:36Speaker 03

  Elton.

• 15:38Speaker 03

Yeah, he's my best friend. I call him, we call each other every day, you know.

• 15:43Jessie Ware?

I mean, let's talk about Elton and the album, this trailer that came out today.

• 15:47Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 15:49Jessie Ware?

I mean, it, for people that haven't seen it.

• 15:52Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 15:53Jessie Ware?

And I know this is gonna be coming out a bit later, um, but like, it's a trailer of the making of your record.

• 15:58Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 15:59Jessie Ware?

And it's the first time Elton has allowed cameras. I presume maybe, is it the first time you've allowed cameras in there or not?

• 16:05Speaker 03

The thing people don't know about the cameras yet, it's really a kind of a missing point here, is that we didn't know where they were. They were fixed cameras. There were no cameramen.

• 16:13Jessie Ware?

  Right, yeah.

• 16:14Speaker 03

And we for utterly forgot about them within six hours of the first day and then never thought about them again until we were watching these trailers.

• 16:21Jessie Ware?

Cause I've always wondered, cause everyone wants everybody to have content now, right?

• 16:24Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 16:24Jessie Ware?

And everyone said to me, you should just put a GoPro in the corner. And I'm like, I wonder whether it would make me feel inhibited.

• 16:31Speaker 03

  I forgot.

• 16:31Jessie Ware?

  Really?

• 16:32Speaker 03

  I never actually saw one.

• 16:33Jessie Ware?

Elton was throwing shit at you, so.

• 16:34Speaker 03

Yeah, and I mean, I don't think he would have cared, even if there were like people standing there with a camera, but the way that you behave when, when you don't know there are cameras around is like really interesting. I don't wanna say I didn't know, I did know, but I really forgot.

• 16:49Jessie Ware?

  But this trailer shows tensions.

• 16:52Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 16:53Jessie Ware?

Initially, and how you made this record in twenty days. And you know, this you being with your icon, your idol that you.

• 16:59Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah.

• 17:00Jessie Ware?

And, and you then having to be, I don't know, I guess you've kind of been Pam sometimes, therapist Pam sometimes.

• 17:08Speaker 03

  A bit panish, yeah.

• 17:09Jessie Ware?

A bit panish. Also maybe mediated between Andrew Watt, the produ- producer and Elton, because they're both slightly more fiery than you potentially.

• 17:16Speaker 03

  Yeah, there you go.

• 17:17Jessie Ware?

  Everyone's passionate.

• 17:18Speaker 03

  She's witchy and psychic.

• 17:19Jessie Ware?

No, I've actually met Andrew Watt years ago.

• 17:22Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 17:22Jessie Ware?

And he rocked up at my mate's house and he had like, was it like a Mustang? It was like some sexy car.

• 17:27Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 17:28Jessie Ware?

Does he still like sexy cars?

• 17:29Speaker 03

Making sense. He likes sexy everything. He wears like no shirt under his suit jacket guy.

• 17:33Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 17:34Speaker 03

  Lots of necklaces.

• 17:36Speaker 02

  Is he married?

• 17:38Speaker 03

  No, he's got.

• 17:39Jessie Ware?

  Forever a Playboy?

• 17:39Speaker 03

He's got an amazing long-term girlfriend called Charlotte, who's just like heaven.

• 17:45Jessie Ware?

  Great.

• 17:45Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 17:45Jessie Ware?

But so you were making this record and the trailer's come out and it's warts and all.

• 17:50Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 17:50Jessie Ware?

  And it's very exciting.

• 17:52Speaker 03

  Correct.

• 17:52Jessie Ware?

And also, by the way, the record is stunning.

• 17:55Speaker 03

  Divine.

• 17:56Jessie Ware?

It's that opening track, Ballad of Laura and Ira. I, I, this is what I wanted to ask you because it felt, you know, it has this big crescendo in it. And.

• 18:07Speaker 02

It's got this big overture at the beginning.

• 18:09Jessie Ware?

But, but like, it, you know, it, it gets so, it's so exciting and you feel like you're at a gig.

• 18:15Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 18:15Jessie Ware?

  And it's so live.

• 18:16Speaker 03

Yeah, that's what I wanted to, I mean, it wasn't my idea, but when I first heard that, I'm like, oh, imagine opening a gig with that.

• 18:22Jessie Ware?

That's exactly, it was a perfect opener to an album, but then I was like, that, I had goosebumps, I was imagining Elton back at Glastonbury.

• 18:28Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 18:29Jessie Ware?

And you there, and now he's retired, so what's going on? Please say you're gonna play this album, because it's so perfect.

• 18:37Speaker 03

I mean, we are right now just leaving it up to the great mystery of his healing and whatever happens or doesn't happen with his sight. But I will say that we don't talk about this because I don't want him to feel pressure or nerves or to feel like he's letting anybody down because of his vision. Um, but I have hope that something will happen because we did that performance yesterday and he sat down at the piano and it was the first time we've. And it, when I tell you it came out of him like a thunderstorm, it was incredible what he was doing on the piano, didn't miss a note. Harmonies went straight to the right harmony. I had to sing aloud just to, just to be at his level.

• 19:17Speaker 03

I was like, god damn, you're seventy-eight and just unbelievable. So I think it could happen, honestly. Who believes in angels is a really complicated song and he just had ten minutes and he had it.

• 19:29Jessie Ware?

Yeah, but I mean, also you two sound so great together.

• 19:32Speaker 03

  Oh, thank you.

• 19:33Jessie Ware?

Obviously, he was a fan of yours, but you were a huge fan of him.

• 19:36Speaker 02

Well, that's, you always loved him from a small child. How did you first meet him?

• 19:43Speaker 03

Well, so I guess I'll give you a background of my actual childhood, you know, I kind of talked to you about that I had a really uh strange and chaotic but kind of wonderful childhood. Our family was really entrenched in country music and country music in in the States in the late eighties and early nineties was not just a genre of music, it was like a cultural movement, it was like a lifestyle during that time.

• 20:07Jessie Ware?

Is it not like that anymore?

• 20:09Speaker 03

It is, but it's a little more um uh pedestrian than it was when when when I was young, like it was really something you were proud of. And it was aligned, I think, with us sort of religiously and politically at that time, again, different era. And I got, uh I I was allowed to do a book report, you guys have book reports in the schools over here?

• 20:31Jessie Ware?

I don't know, explain what your book.

• 20:32Speaker 03

You you choose a book and then you study this book.

• 20:35Jessie Ware?

  Like a review?

• 20:36Speaker 03

Yeah, you do a project based on this book, our project presentation. And I got to go choose a book and I chose a book on a boy called Ryan White. Because I thought the boy on the cover was cute on the book and he had died of AIDS in the early nineties. And in this book, I'm reading about a worldview that I have never been exposed to before. Thinking of of HIV and AIDS like really differently because what happened was the evangelical right tried to sort of like weaponize this boy against uh the the gay community by saying that, you know, AIDS is caused by the gay community and this boy was not having it, he was really brave, even as like a young teenager and ostracized like in every way.

• 21:14Speaker 03

And then this gay British rock star comes into this boy's life and just changes his life, like moves into his house, starts taking calls for the mom, steps in and starts helping with all of the media and the frenzy at the end of this boy's life. And when he dies, this rock star sings a song called Skyline Pigeon. And at the funeral, and I saw the lyrics of Skyline Pigeon, and I was like, right, that that is gonna be my job. I'm gonna write lyrics like that. It's unbelievable, turn me loose from your hands, let me fly to distant lands. Over green fields, trees and mountains and flowers and forest fountains, and I was like, I've never seen fucking anything like that in a country song.

• 21:54Speaker 03

And it took me to the library where I found uh two albums by Elton John and a book. And was a different kid after that. I got a keyboard, I learned to write songs, and I learned about. Queen and George Michael and U2 and The Beatles and Kate Bush and Sinead O'Connor and just my whole worldview expanded. So I carried that affection for this British rock star that I fell in love with as a person before I ever heard his music. Throughout my adolescence into my early twenties and like as soon as I could get away with it. I got a record deal, I wrote him a letter.

• 22:32Speaker 03

And he immediately responded and said, what do you want to do?

• 22:34Jessie Ware?

He likes letters, doesn't he? He was doing writing letters for to announce this album.

• 22:38Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 22:40Jessie Ware?

So you still have this letter?

• 22:41Speaker 03

I don't have it, no. And of course, he doesn't have it. It was just like a fan letter from Crazy Lesbian.

• 22:51Jessie Ware?

And then you didn't become pen pals, but you.

• 22:56Speaker 03

We just stayed, we stayed close. I mean. I I had picked like the most tumbleweed connection song I could think of and I was like, will you come and play piano on my song? And he's like, well. If you come to Vegas, I will. So I got invited to go to Vegas. I'm like maybe twenty five at this time. And I go there with my files and we're gonna do this song and I'm like walking down this hallway and I can hear him talking in the control room. And after seeing Live at Melbourne and Tantrums and Tiaras and all of his interviews, you know, being this big fan as a teenager, I'm like. I'm gonna turn the corner and I'm gonna meet Elton fucking John. And I did, but it wasn't weird. We just like immediately were friends. And he sent me over a hundred albums.

• 23:42Speaker 03

And just started staying in touch and mentoring me and. It led to this, you know, however many years later, what is it? Eighteen years later?

• 23:53Jessie Ware?

  How fabulous.

• 23:54Speaker 03

  Yeah, it's a crazy story.

• 23:56Jessie Ware?

  As much more?

• 23:58Speaker 03

I love him more because of what I saw in the studio, the absolute mayhem.

• 24:04Speaker 02

But he, I mean, he's so good at his art, isn't he? And it's so, it's so wonderful to watch someone who's so accomplished and so good at what they do.

• 24:14Jessie Ware?

I mean, look, I, the only chance I've been able to see him perform at was at Glastonbury headlining it.

• 24:21Speaker 03

  Were you there?

• 24:22Jessie Ware?

It was so beautiful. It was magical. And he had such a host of ages and, and, and it was, you know, everyone knows some of the, his talent and the way he played and the soul and his like, it was just,

• 24:39Speaker 02

He's very generous as well, isn't he?

• 24:41Jessie Ware?

It's remarkable and he is so generous. I mean, his whole thing uplifting other artists. It's, he's so generous. I wanna know, is it true that he has the best flowers in every house of his? And he keeps them having flowers in every house, even if he's not there?

• 24:55Speaker 03

He has the best flowers and he sends the best flowers. You don't need to look at the card to know they came from Elton John.

• 25:03Speaker 03

That's if you can reach that high.

• 25:05Speaker 02

That's a big bunch. Are your children with you?

• 25:09Speaker 03

Uh, they are, yeah, they're back.

• 25:09Speaker 02

Have you been to Legoland yet?

• 25:11Speaker 03

  Yeah, we went to Legoland.

• 25:12Speaker 02

  Yeah, it's wonderful, isn't it?

• 25:13Speaker 03

Every time they stay there, we go to Legoland. Yeah, my kids are back at home with Elton right now.

• 25:17Speaker 02

  Oh, gosh, he's babysitting.

• 25:19Speaker 03

I mean, sure, we can call it that.

• 25:21Speaker 02

Do they call him Uncle Elton?

• 25:23Speaker 03

They call him Elton, um, and they call him Uncle Elton sometimes when, when, uh, when, when they're with me. But he's the only, he's the only man they've seen in his underwear.

• 25:38Speaker 02

Have you just got sisters or you've got a brother as well?

• 25:41Speaker 03

I've got a brother and a sister and we're really, really close.

• 25:44Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 25:44Speaker 03

Yeah, we're, we're like a really close family.

• 25:46Speaker 02

So who was cooking when you were growing up?

• 25:49Speaker 03

My mom. My mom's a great cook.

• 25:50Speaker 02

  Is she?

• 25:51Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 25:51Speaker 02

What's her best dish that you would always wanted to cook?

• 25:54Speaker 03

I loved when she would make, um, Swiss steak, she called it.

• 25:59Speaker 02

  Swiss steak?

• 25:59Speaker 03

Yeah, she just cut off, cut up a bunch of steak and put like mushroom cream sauce. And it was just like a big white trash meal that we would pour over mashed potatoes and we loved it.

• 26:08Speaker 02

  So it's called Swiss steak?

• 26:09Speaker 03

  That's what she called it.

• 26:10Speaker 02

And that was her best meal?

• 26:12Speaker 03

I thought so. I thought, I think, I thought everything she made was really good and nice and salty. And my mom doesn't under-season.

• 26:19Speaker 02

Oh, good. I don't either. And what desserts, are you big on desserts in your family?

• 26:24Speaker 03

Yeah, I love to eat, so.

• 26:26Speaker 02

Do you, on this big compound, do you have animals? Do you have, is it farming? Do you like to grow stuff?

• 26:34Speaker 03

I got, I've got chickens and a dog and some cats. I had until a few years ago, a horse and some goats too. And we're preparing to get some more horses again.

• 26:43Speaker 02

Yeah, cause you had horses when you were younger, didn't you?

• 26:45Speaker 03

  Yeah, I love horses.

• 26:46Speaker 02

Do you like, so do you ride most days?

• 26:49Speaker 03

I'm not like an equestrian person. I'm not like a classy horseback rider or anything.

• 26:54Speaker 02

  But you like horse riding?

• 26:55Speaker 03

I love horse riding, yeah, I just love horses.

• 26:57Speaker 02

So who's doing the cooking at home?

• 26:59Speaker 03

Well, me and Catherine, we trade off. We love to cook. We cook breakfast, lunch and dinner because we live so far out in the country.

• 27:04Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 27:05Speaker 03

And we trade off just depending on whose food we're craving on any given night. But I love cooking for Cap and she likes cooking for me too.

• 27:12Speaker 02

So what, what do you like to cook? Steak?

• 27:15Speaker 03

I like to grill things and to cook on cast iron on the grill. I like to do a lot of like crispy skin seafood and prawns. And like I said, I love to cook ribeye steaks and filet for Cap because she doesn't prefer a ribeye. And I grill vegetables. Um, yeah, I do, I am a fisherman. So outside of music.

• 27:36Speaker 02

  You like fishing?

• 27:37Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 27:38Speaker 02

  I liked fishing.

• 27:39Speaker 03

  Do you?

• 27:39Speaker 02

My dad used to take me when I was little.

• 27:42Speaker 03

  Yeah?

• 27:43Speaker 02

And obviously, you know, we lived in Manchester, so it wasn't great for its fishing. But there's something very peaceful about going fishing and you're with your dad and you're sitting alongside. For some reason, it's not that boring fishing for a kid.

• 27:57Speaker 03

  No.

• 27:57Speaker 02

You think it might be boring.

• 27:59Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 27:59Speaker 02

Because not a lot happens. It's a bit like watching cricket, but it isn't somehow. You're just waiting for the moment, aren't you?

• 28:07Speaker 03

Yeah, it's, I just think it's one of the best things. Actually, horses and fishing are like the two best things I think you can do for your soul.

• 28:14Speaker 02

You could be a member of the royal family.

• 28:15Speaker 03

  Really?

• 28:15Speaker 02

  Yeah, horseback riding and fishing.

• 28:18Speaker 03

My manners would be all wrong.

• 28:19Speaker 02

  No.

• 28:19Speaker 03

No, but they say, what is it? It's a perpetual act of optimism to try to connect to something you can't see.

• 28:25Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 28:26Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 28:26Speaker 02

And so what fish do you get in Seattle?

• 28:29Speaker 03

  All kinds, fishing is.

• 28:30Speaker 02

So tell me, what would you cook? Which fish?

• 28:32Speaker 03

Well, everything. I love, um, all the seasons they open up and there are different seasons, you know? So I'm about to enter into my fishing season right now. I've got a new boat.

• 28:40Speaker 02

Oh, you've got a new boat?

• 28:41Speaker 03

  And I'm a boat captain.

• 28:42Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 28:42Speaker 03

So I'm gonna go out for ling cod and rock cod in April. And then in May, the halibut opens up.

• 28:50Speaker 02

  My favorite fish.

• 28:51Speaker 03

All of the favorite fish to catch.

• 28:53Speaker 02

  Why?

• 28:53Speaker 03

  Well.

• 28:54Speaker 02

  That big.

• 28:55Speaker 03

They're huge. They come up like the trunk of a Volkswagen and they fight the whole time. And then um they're just snow white and beautiful meat that preserves like nothing else. And when we process it all, from from the catch to the processing to the flash freeze to the cook, when it's all only ever touched your hands, it's such a nice feeling.

• 29:15Speaker 02

  So fabulous.

• 29:16Speaker 03

So that's what I love to cook is fish that I catch.

• 29:18Speaker 02

I love the skin on halibut.

• 29:20Speaker 03

  Oh, that is not me.

• 29:22Speaker 02

  Oh, you don't like it?

• 29:23Speaker 03

Tell me, what what do you?

• 29:24Speaker 02

I like it because it's slightly, when you can make it crisp and it's slightly oily around the side, I think it's delicious.

• 29:30Speaker 03

  Wow.

• 29:31Speaker 02

So I I'm surprised if you like eating the fat on meat.

• 29:34Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 29:34Speaker 02

I love the fat on halibut.

• 29:36Speaker 03

  It's just so rubbery.

• 29:37Speaker 02

  No, not if it's crispy.

• 29:39Speaker 03

Really, got a really crisp bit.

• 29:41Speaker 02

  I like it.

• 29:41Speaker 03

Well, and the cast iron on the grill is so nice for doing that. I love doing salmon that way.

• 29:46Speaker 02

  But do you catch salmon?

• 29:47Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 29:48Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 29:49Speaker 03

  Yeah, so May is halibut.

• 29:50Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 29:51Speaker 03

End of May is spot prawns.

• 29:53Speaker 02

  What?

• 29:53Speaker 03

Yeah, we have nine inch spot prawns, the sweetest, most gorgeous prawn. Yeah, yeah.

• 29:59Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 30:00Speaker 03

And we catch them in about four hundred feet of water. It's a lot of work.

• 30:04Speaker 02

How do you catch a prawn?

• 30:06Speaker 03

Well, you you you you take a prawn trap and you put about thirty pounds of weight in it.

• 30:11Speaker 02

See, I don't even know what's a prawn trap. You have to explain.

• 30:13Speaker 03

It's like a big um cage.

• 30:15Speaker 02

  Pot.

• 30:16Speaker 03

  Yeah, exactly, exactly.

• 30:17Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 30:18Speaker 03

And you drop it down about four hundred feet.

• 30:20Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 30:20Speaker 03

And you wait an hour and then you bring it up and you, once you start bringing it up, you can't stop because they'll get out of the holes.

• 30:26Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 30:27Speaker 03

They need to get that, you need to get that momentum behind it. And um you can catch a couple hundred shrimp in a pot that way. End of the day, you've got five, six hundred shrimp.

• 30:35Speaker 02

Too many to eat. You have to freeze some.

• 30:37Speaker 03

Well, we usually all split them up on the compound.

• 30:40Speaker 02

Oh, my God. Of course, there's a lot to feed, lots of meat.

• 30:44Speaker 03

We just had a table made that can have forty people at it.

• 30:46Speaker 02

  Forty people?

• 30:48Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 30:48Speaker 02

Bloody. Bloody, it's like Dolly Parton.

• 30:51Speaker 03

It is like Dolly Parton. Yeah, that's.

• 30:55Speaker 02

She likes a lot at her table.

• 30:56Jessie Ware?

No, it's it's spiced lamb meatballs with chickpeas and dates.

• 31:01Speaker 02

Oh, God, that would be beautiful.

• 31:03Jessie Ware?

And like couscous with some flake almonds and cablonary.

• 31:06Speaker 02

  I love that.

• 31:07Jessie Ware?

  So, okay, good.

• 31:18Speaker 00

• 31:54Speaker 03

Mmm. Oh, my God. That's fantastic. Oh, my God, my wife is so jealous right now. Have you had some? Just want some. Have you not eaten? None of you eaten? There's a bowl for all of you. Catherine, do not be polite. Please don't. I've got loads. Don't do this. British, God. And is this yogurt? Yeah. So good. Greek yogurt. I love it.

• 32:16Jessie Ware?

And I've actually, we're doing a crumble for Pudd.

• 32:18Speaker 03

Have you put it in, darling?

• 32:19Jessie Ware?

  I haven't.

• 32:20Speaker 03

  I love crumbles.

• 32:21Jessie Ware?

I felt like being married to a Brit, you've got to know about a crumble.

• 32:26Speaker 03

Ask my wife. My favorite dessert is she's going to tell you crumble.

• 32:28Jessie Ware?

  Oh, really?

• 32:29Speaker 03

  Mm-hmm.

• 32:30Speaker 02

  Where did you meet Kath?

• 32:33Speaker 03

I met Kath through Paul McCartney.

• 32:37Speaker 02

  Oh, did you?

• 32:38Speaker 03

  Mm-hmm.

• 32:39Speaker 02

  How?

• 32:40Speaker 03

Well, I was running a charity, and Kath was heading up Paul McCartney's charity foundation. And she read about one of our campaigns, a really sad one, actually, over here, and was moved by it. And called up and said, "How can I help? I want to send some, a bass guitar, a signed bass guitar, some music books, anything I can help to raise money for this auction." And my management called me. They said, "This woman that works for Paul McCartney is really smart, and we think you should talk to her about running a foundation." And so I started talking to this woman over the phone and over email. And I thought she was 75.

• 33:19Jessie Ware?

Why? Because she was so wise.

• 33:21Speaker 03

Yes, and she worked with Paul McCartney, so I just associated her as his age for like a year. Maybe more. Yeah, and so I'm thinking I'm talking to this sweet little old lady over here in London. I'm like twenty five. No, there was, this was, you know, Kath and I have been married for thirteen years, so this is at least sixteen, seventeen years ago.

• 33:42Jessie Ware?

And was there any flirtation with this seventy five year old woman?

• 33:45Speaker 03

No, god, no. I mean, no, you know, I was like, look, I was a child. So I'm, I'm talking with this woman. I think she's brilliant and I'm really grateful to her because she's really helpful and she's actually sending us things and being really cool. And then one day I go to New York City to play this gig and um we called her the charity lady. And they said to me, I was getting ready to go downtown in New York with all my hip lesbian friends. I was gonna get on the back of this cute little Baby Dykes Vespa and we were gonna go down to the bars and sing karaoke and I was all excited. And they were like, the charity lady is here to see you, so don't, don't leave right after the show. And I go, oh, not the charity lady. I mean, anywhere but New York City, can't you come to her much?

• 34:29Jessie Ware?

  Charity lady.

• 34:30Speaker 03

Yeah, you know, it's like, I mean, I'm really grateful for her and they're like, come on, she's done so much for you. Please just meet the charity lady. And I'm like, okay.

• 34:39Speaker 03

So I get off stage after my stupid little show and I'll walk back into the dressing room. And there is this absolute knockout woman standing there who's my exact age. And she goes, hello, I'm Catherine Shepherd. And she, I just couldn't believe that voice came out. It was such a shock, you know, and I was just infatuated, immediately infatuated with her.

• 35:05Jessie Ware?

Did the charity lady go on the back of the bike and go to the club with you?

• 35:08Speaker 03

I was like. I didn't go to the club. I stayed, I stayed with the charity lady for the rest of the evening.

• 35:13Jessie Ware?

  And rest of your life.

• 35:14Speaker 03

Lost track of all of those fun lesbians and they went into town without me.

• 35:19Jessie Ware?

  And the rest is history.

• 35:20Speaker 03

  Mm hmm.

• 35:22Jessie Ware?

  That is so lovely.

• 35:23Speaker 03

And now I'm married to the charity lady.

• 35:28Jessie Ware?

Brandy, can I ask you about Joni Mitchell and the famous Joni Jams?

• 35:32Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 35:33Speaker 02

  How is she?

• 35:34Speaker 03

Joan's great. In fact, I had a terrible moment today. I did an interview. Joni's one of my very, really good friends and we've been really good friends for five or six years and I've been able to be in a kind of passenger seat. Yeah, she's fucking amazing. She had that aneurysm, um, eleven years ago.

• 35:50Speaker 02

  She had a stroke.

• 35:51Speaker 03

It was an aneurysm. It was way worse. She was like, I mean, she hardly came, she hardly came out of it. She had to relearn everything, talking and walking and eating and everything. And about five or six years ago, I got to get involved with her musically and start to help her reemerge back into doing music again, even her own in her living room.

• 36:11Jessie Ware?

But yeah, weren't you were the person that really encouraged her to do that? It was you were leading that.

• 36:17Speaker 03

Yeah, I would say, I would say that that was probably me.

• 36:20Jessie Ware?

How did you feel? Is it because you could, because you obviously saw there was a glimmer of like wanting and hope from her or was it, was there a tussle with that conversation where she was like, I am not doing this and you were like?

• 36:34Speaker 03

It was, it was like that, but it was, I didn't ask either. She just preempted this conversation. I was like, I think it was um, right around that same time, um, twenty eighteen, maybe something like that. I went to dinner with her because she liked my wife. She didn't even know me. And I got invited. It was, it's a long story, but Catherine and her met, they made friends and I, I come in on the coattails of my wife all the time. So I get invited to this meal and Joni's talking to me about uh, music or whatever, like a little bit. And she goes, yeah, you know, I don't do music and I don't, I don't want to hear it. Whatever you have to say about how you think, whether that's a good idea or a bad idea, I don't, I don't want to hear it. I'm happy to not do music. I'm a painter. But my house, it misses music.

• 37:14Speaker 03

She goes, so I'm wondering, maybe you could get some friends together and you could start coming over and you guys could play the instruments and be in the house.

• 37:22Jessie Ware?

And these became the Joni Jams.

• 37:23Speaker 03

These became the Joni Jams. And the very first Joni Jam, what happened was you have a woman that has not opened her mouth to sing or touched an instrument since this aneurysm. And even before it, honestly, she was done with music. And There was a moment where Herbie Hancock was at the piano, you know, just right? Sure. And his hands are just kind of floating over the keys and everybody's drinking wine and talking and having a a party and Joni's sitting quietly in her chair with a glass of wine and and nobody else knew what Herbie was playing, but Joni did. And you just hear out of the corner of the room. Summertime and the living is easy. And the room just half the room burst into tears, Herbie burst into tears.

• 38:03Speaker 02

Oh, my god, I'm going to cry.

• 38:05Speaker 03

She just opened her mouth and decided now's the time. I sing now. And she just started singing and she's.

• 38:11Speaker 02

  With that voice.

• 38:12Speaker 03

With that voice. And she takes risks every time she does it. She pushes her body to the very limit. And I may have helped, but no one gets credit for what she's done for the last six years with her body and her ability other than her.

• 38:26Jessie Ware?

Can you paint the picture of the Joni Jam? You know, you say there's wine. Is there snacks?

• 38:30Speaker 03

Yeah, Joni likes Mexican foods. There's a lot of Mexican food.

• 38:32Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 38:33Speaker 03

She also quite likes hot dogs.

• 38:34Jessie Ware?

  Oh, yeah.

• 38:35Speaker 03

So we have some hot dogs. So we have a chef called Chef Steph that cooks for everybody. And we always have a margarita stand. Joni loves a Cadillac margarita or a Pinot Grigio.

• 38:44Jessie Ware?

  What's a Cadillac margarita?

• 38:46Speaker 03

  It's it's a really boozy margarita.

• 38:49Jessie Ware?

  How could it be boozy?

• 38:51Speaker 02

It's only lime juice and tequila.

• 38:53Speaker 03

I think if it, because it's got Grand Marnier in it.

• 38:55Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 38:56Speaker 02

  Oh, really?

• 38:57Speaker 03

She amps that up. And then you end up with these buckets of tequila. And she can drink you under the table and not even blink.

• 39:05Jessie Ware?

  Cool.

• 39:05Speaker 03

  Yeah, she's really cool.

• 39:07Jessie Ware?

  Cool.

• 39:07Speaker 03

You should come to a Joni Jam, you know?

• 39:09Jessie Ware?

I would, that is one thing that I can. Jam, jamming, I wanna vomit.

• 39:14Speaker 03

  Why?

• 39:15Speaker 02

  Why?

• 39:16Speaker 03

  Tell me why.

• 39:16Jessie Ware?

  I'm just like.

• 39:17Speaker 03

What do you cover when you cover a song?

• 39:18Jessie Ware?

I don't play. I sing, but I don't play. And like, I feel like a fraud. Look at you with all your instruments and then you can do that. And like, yeah, I can write a song with the in collaboration and I guess. Jam is literally, it's like improv, the idea of improv.

• 39:34Speaker 02

If Herbie's on the piano, what are you playing? What are you playing?

• 39:38Speaker 03

  I'm playing guitar.

• 39:40Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 39:40Speaker 03

But I'm often just facilitating. I'm often.

• 39:44Speaker 02

  You could do that, Jo.

• 39:45Speaker 03

Asking other people to sing. I make sure that everybody gets involved in the circle. I make sure Joni's getting to sing enough. I make sure everybody knows that it's not a show for Joni, that we're actually there. Because we want Joni to sing. And also that everybody gets heard, you know, everybody wants that chance to like play for Joni Mitchell.

• 40:02Jessie Ware?

You're a producer. You're a producer and a facilitator. As well as being very talented.

• 40:05Speaker 02

So you, so there's someone on, is someone on drums, so a drum kit there?

• 40:10Speaker 03

We have had a lot of percussionists in there, Marcus Mumford comes in and plays percussion a lot.

• 40:14Jessie Ware?

  Lovely.

• 40:14Speaker 03

Uh Griff from Dawes, um Abe Browns, Matt Chamberlain, my drummer's been a couple of times. Um yeah, we've got amazing people.

• 40:22Jessie Ware?

You have Ruben come and play the piano.

• 40:24Speaker 03

Ruben's the original Joni Jam piano player. He used to fly and.

• 40:29Jessie Ware?

Used, Ruben James is a gorgeous boy.

• 40:31Speaker 03

  Gorgeous.

• 40:32Jessie Ware?

Who used to play with Sam Smith. And so Ruben was always there smiling and being gorgeous and like when Sam was singing. All their, you know, ballads, Ruben and Sam would be there, it would be them two the whole time and. He, I remember being at Glastonbury with Ruben one time, we had a fun night.

• 40:48Speaker 03

  He's intoxicating.

• 40:49Jessie Ware?

  He's fab and talented.

• 40:51Speaker 03

  Oh, he's a dream.

• 40:53Jessie Ware?

Last supper, you're going to a desert island for a very long time and.

• 40:58Speaker 02

  Away from the compound.

• 41:00Jessie Ware?

Away, away from the compound. What are you gonna have for dinner? A starter, a main, a pud, cause you know what a pud is, cause you're married to a Brit. And a drink of choice. Would it be your very own cocktail that exists in Seattle?

• 41:18Speaker 03

Um, you're gonna hate me, I'm gonna say no.

• 41:20Jessie Ware?

What's it called, the Carlisle Cup?

• 41:22Speaker 03

The Carlisle Cup. My wife quite likes a Carlisle Cup.

• 41:24Speaker 02

  What's in it?

• 41:25Speaker 03

Pims. You'll be pleased to know.

• 41:28Speaker 02

  So the charity lady likes.

• 41:29Speaker 03

The charity lady loves a pims.

• 41:34Speaker 03

It would, for me, okay, the cocktail, like the start.

• 41:36Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 41:37Speaker 03

Would be the classic whiskey sour with egg white.

• 41:39Speaker 02

  Oh, really?

• 41:41Speaker 03

  Classic whiskey sour.

• 41:42Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 41:42Speaker 03

Yeah, with like Woodford Reserve or some kind of, maybe a Kentucky Bourbon, something like that. And then, um, I would, I would go oysters, like raw oysters, champagne vinaigrette, shaved ice. Lemon, Tabasco sauce.

• 41:56Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 41:57Speaker 03

  Okay, so we're starting there.

• 41:58Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 41:59Speaker 03

  And then it's main next?

• 42:00Jessie Ware?

  Mm-hmm.

• 42:00Speaker 03

Okay, I'm gonna get a dish between that and the main. Okay, we're going straight to the main. Um.

• 42:05Jessie Ware?

  You can have some extras.

• 42:06Speaker 02

  You can have an extra.

• 42:07Jessie Ware?

You can do what you like.

• 42:07Speaker 02

  Have a soup.

• 42:08Speaker 03

Some kind of like a little bready baklava with goat cheese and like pistachios and balsamic.

• 42:15Jessie Ware?

  Where have you had this?

• 42:16Speaker 03

Um, several places, like some kind of a of a flaky, bready thing with those things on it, like a.

• 42:23Jessie Ware?

  Delicious.

• 42:24Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 42:24Speaker 02

So just tell me, is it like, is it like our feta and filo or something like that?

• 42:30Speaker 03

Yeah, it is like that, yeah.

• 42:31Speaker 02

Baked feta and filo. And then you put, you put cam, you you can put pomegranate on the top, yeah.

• 42:38Speaker 03

  Pomegranate would be perfect, yeah.

• 42:39Speaker 02

Okay, pomegranate molasses, we might go with, yeah.

• 42:42Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 42:43Speaker 02

  Okay, go on.

• 42:43Speaker 03

And then. It's really hard for me to decide between halibut salmon and a ribeye, but I would maybe go ribeye.

• 42:49Jessie Ware?

Are you cooking your own ribeye?

• 42:51Speaker 03

I am, yes, and and this ribeye is gonna have on it some, you know, coarse black pepper, coarse salt. Uh, uh, a little bit of brown sugar, forget that.

• 43:02Jessie Ware?

  Oh.

• 43:03Speaker 03

  Caramelization on the outside.

• 43:04Jessie Ware?

Ah, I've never done that, that's a great idea.

• 43:06Speaker 03

  And some black coffee.

• 43:09Speaker 02

  What, the ground?

• 43:10Speaker 03

Like a coffee rub, all rubbed onto this ribeye.

• 43:12Jessie Ware?

And and and and ground coffee?

• 43:14Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 43:15Jessie Ware?

Like, and we're not talking instant coffee, we're talking grilled beans.

• 43:18Speaker 03

Real espresso beans, ground, not too fine and rubbed into the meat with the brown sugar.

• 43:25Jessie Ware?

  Wow.

• 43:26Speaker 02

What would you call that, a rub?

• 43:29Speaker 03

I don't know, um, I learned it from another singer, actually.

• 43:32Speaker 02

  Who?

• 43:33Speaker 03

Uh, Emily Salyers from the Indigo Girls, she's kind of, her and her friends, Sue and Ross, kind of walked me through making a steaks early in my twenties. So I would do that, and on the side with that, I may may have some like, uh, grilled eggplant, which you would call aubergine.

• 43:48Jessie Ware?

  Mm hmm.

• 43:49Speaker 03

And, uh, like rocket salad, that would be like my main. And then for dessert, I would probably go crumble. Apple.

• 43:58Jessie Ware?

God, no pressure, bloody hell, I'm scared now.

• 44:01Speaker 03

Yeah, or maybe a key lime. If it was fish, I would then finish with a key lime and some champagne.

• 44:07Jessie Ware?

I like how decisive that was, Brandy.

• 44:09Speaker 03

  Mm hmm.

• 44:10Speaker 02

I think it sounds like a good.

• 44:12Speaker 03

  Do you like that?

• 44:13Speaker 02

Yeah, I do. If you have meals where everyone's all living near each other.

• 44:18Speaker 03

  Mm hmm.

• 44:18Speaker 02

Do you say, oh, we'll get together on Sunday night.

• 44:21Speaker 03

  Do you ring a bell?

• 44:22Speaker 02

This or you bring that. It's like a potluck supper.

• 44:25Speaker 03

Yeah, and we do it all the time.

• 44:26Speaker 02

  You do it all.

• 44:27Speaker 03

And we each have individual things we're really good at, like my wife's roast dinner is like the compound favorite.

• 44:33Speaker 02

  Which meat?

• 44:34Speaker 03

  She does uh chicken.

• 44:36Speaker 02

  Chicken.

• 44:37Speaker 03

Roast chicken. Yeah, um and that's really popular with everyone and she also. Mm mm my sweet wife, she does Thanksgiving and Christmas and she cooks for everyone, usually at least twenty people, if not forty.

• 44:50Speaker 02

And you get people to bring things to, yeah.

• 44:53Speaker 03

My sister bakes like you would not believe, like she bakes amazing baked goods, cookies and cakes and rolls and she also does cheesecakes and key lime pies and stuff. So my sister is like a boss with all the sweets.

• 45:03Speaker 02

I wanna live in this compound.

• 45:05Speaker 03

You gotta come. If you ever come to Washington and you don't come to dinner, I will be so offended.

• 45:09Speaker 02

  Don't come.

• 45:10Jessie Ware?

I'm coming. Okay. And you're gonna rub that bloody beef.

• 45:13Speaker 03

  I am.

• 45:14Jessie Ware?

  And with that coffee.

• 45:15Speaker 03

  And you, I'm taking fishing.

• 45:16Jessie Ware?

I'll go fishing. I've never known this about you.

• 45:19Speaker 02

  My dad.

• 45:19Jessie Ware?

I never knew this about you. Thank you, Brandy. Um, I wanted to also know, if I was opening the fridge in your house.

• 45:27Speaker 03

  Mm hmm.

• 45:27Jessie Ware?

What would I be seeing in that fridge?

• 45:30Speaker 03

Probably all my wife's healthy choices.

• 45:32Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 45:33Speaker 03

Yeah, but if I want the things I like, like I like to eat like a child when I'm not cooking.

• 45:38Jessie Ware?

  Right.

• 45:38Speaker 03

I will go and get those things at the grocery store.

• 45:40Jessie Ware?

  What are these things?

• 45:41Speaker 03

Oh, you won't know the names of them, but like, you know, uh, gushers, kids candy, fruit snacks and cheez its and Blizzard ice creams and.

• 45:49Jessie Ware?

Oh, what's a Blizzard ice cream?

• 45:50Speaker 03

  Oh, it's a Dairy Queen's, you've ever had Dairy Queen's?

• 45:53Speaker 02

Heard of Dairy Queen, somebody else has spoken about Dairy Queen, I can't remember.

• 45:59Speaker 03

Do you guys know Ben and Jerry's ice cream?

• 46:01Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 46:01Speaker 03

Okay, so it's my dream to have a Ben and Jerry's ice cream named after me or at least like somehow associated.

• 46:07Jessie Ware?

  What would be the flavors?

• 46:09Speaker 03

Okay, so I'll have a name and everything.

• 46:11Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 46:11Speaker 02

  Go on.

• 46:11Speaker 03

  So you know, there's like.

• 46:12Jessie Ware?

Pitch it, shop tank, let's go.

• 46:13Speaker 03

  Jerry Garcia has Cherry Garcia.

• 46:16Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 46:16Speaker 03

  It's delicious.

• 46:17Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 46:17Speaker 03

Um, uh, Fish, the band Fish, which you guys don't know, but they're huge in the state.

• 46:21Jessie Ware?

Oh, they're fish food, fish food.

• 46:22Speaker 02

  Yeah, we have that.

• 46:23Jessie Ware?

I didn't know there were all these fish, yeah, yeah.

• 46:25Speaker 02

Is that named after a band?

• 46:27Speaker 03

Apparently so. They like bands, they like, like. Jam bands and and rock and roll bands.

• 46:32Speaker 02

  Rocky road.

• 46:32Speaker 03

Mine would be called Candy Bar Lyle.

• 46:36Jessie Ware?

  Oh, yeah.

• 46:38Speaker 03

All the best candy bars crushed up in your favorite ones Heath and Hershey's with almonds and Snickers and Fabru.

• 46:44Speaker 02

  Fab.

• 46:44Speaker 03

All crushed up in the ice cream.

• 46:46Jessie Ware?

Have you have you spoken to Ben or Jerry?

• 46:48Speaker 03

No, but I need to find Ben and Jerry and pitch my idea.

• 46:51Jessie Ware?

This is gonna go viral, right? This is the pitch.

• 46:53Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 46:53Speaker 02

  Candy Bar Lyle.

• 46:54Speaker 03

  Candy Bar Lyle.

• 46:56Jessie Ware?

And what would the base be? Would it be vanilla base or chocolate base?

• 46:59Speaker 03

  Vanilla, okay.

• 47:00Speaker 02

It's got to be just, it's gonna be a lot of sweets in there.

• 47:02Speaker 03

Lot of chocolate in there, yeah.

• 47:03Speaker 02

  Is it mostly chocolates?

• 47:05Speaker 03

Well, candy bars in in America are just chocolate. There's different kinds.

• 47:08Speaker 02

  Reese's cups.

• 47:09Speaker 03

Oh, yeah, that would be perfect.

• 47:10Speaker 02

  Yeah, Reese's cups.

• 47:11Speaker 03

  Butter fingers would be big.

• 47:13Speaker 02

  Butter fingers.

• 47:14Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 47:14Jessie Ware?

I'm I'm thrilled for you. This is gonna happen.

• 47:16Speaker 03

  You think?

• 47:17Jessie Ware?

You see how like, you know, you got to do the Elton album, now you're gonna get your Ben and Jerry.

• 47:21Speaker 03

I would give back two of my Grammys for a Candy Bar Lyle ice cream release.

• 47:25Speaker 02

  Candy Bar Lyle.

• 47:26Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 47:26Speaker 02

  It's so clever.

• 47:27Jessie Ware?

Jerry, did you hear that? She'll give you both a Grammy if you give her an ice cream.

• 47:32Speaker 02

  Because it's it's so clever.

• 47:35Jessie Ware?

This looks really nice. I hope it's quite good. I went quite heavy on the bundle.

• 47:39Speaker 02

  Custard or cream?

• 47:40Jessie Ware?

  Custard or cream?

• 47:42Speaker 03

  Uh, cream?

• 47:43Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 47:43Speaker 03

  Yeah, thank you.

• 47:44Jessie Ware?

Um, thanks, darling. I feel like you, I mean, you're an incredible storyteller on on, you know, on a song, but also just meeting you here, you.

• 47:53Speaker 03

  You are too.

• 47:54Jessie Ware?

Oh, that's very kind. Thank you. But I I would love to know if you can rack your brains. The best dinner party you've ever been to.

• 48:04Speaker 03

  Mm.

• 48:06Jessie Ware?

And if you remember the food.

• 48:07Speaker 03

The best, okay, for the food. Would it be about the food or would it be about the company?

• 48:12Jessie Ware?

Well, I it maybe it's a bit of both. Maybe the food was not in boredom.

• 48:20Speaker 03

I had, um, it's just gonna sound name dropy and braggy.

• 48:23Jessie Ware?

  No, do it, do it.

• 48:25Speaker 03

I've had some pretty great dinner parties.

• 48:27Jessie Ware?

  Do it.

• 48:27Speaker 02

Yeah, I love a name drop.

• 48:29Speaker 03

Kath, what do you think is the best dinner party I've ever been to? I've had some pretty good ones.

• 48:33Jessie Ware?

When you're rolling with Paul and Elton and Joni.

• 48:39Speaker 03

I think it would be with all them.

• 48:41Jessie Ware?

Have you had one with all of them in the room?

• 48:42Speaker 03

Yeah, and Bono. What's he like?

• 48:45Jessie Ware?

  He's fun.

• 48:46Speaker 03

  He's great. God, he's great.

• 48:48Jessie Ware?

  Oh, he's so much fun.

• 48:49Speaker 03

Oh, he has a drink and he's really fun and he actually encourages a lot, you know, I've, I have always gone over my limit whenever I've spent any time with Bono.

• 48:58Jessie Ware?

We must get Bono on the podcast.

Yeah, and he's, he's taken the time to like, he sends me beautiful messages and words when something hard happens in the US, because he knows I have a heart for displaced people. He sends me encouraging little things. He doesn't have to do that. He listens to my music. He, um, he, you know, we'll sit together at a dinner party, cause all kinds of trouble. And, um, I just think he's like magical and I love his wife, Ally, so much. I, I want, I, me and Catherine want to be Bono and Ally when we grow up.

• 49:25Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 49:25Speaker 03

  This is.

• 49:26Jessie Ware?

Do you remember the food that was fed to you or was it just drink from Bono?

• 49:29Speaker 03

You can't think of the food when Bono's there.

• 49:32Jessie Ware?

  Really?

• 49:32Speaker 03

  Yeah, I remember a limoncello.

• 49:35Jessie Ware?

  Oh, God.

• 49:37Speaker 03

  And that's all I remember.

• 49:38Jessie Ware?

  Oh, God.

• 49:39Speaker 02

Brandy, does he keep his sunglasses on at the table?

• 49:42Speaker 03

Uh, no, actually, yeah, yeah, actually, he does. Now that, now that you mention it, I'm, I'm having a fuzzy memory of the sunglasses, yes.

• 49:49Jessie Ware?

Before we let you go, Brandy, back to Windsor, what is a nostalgic taste? Or scent that can transport you some, somewhere?

• 49:58Speaker 03

Oh, a nostalgic taste or scent that can transport me somewhere? Oh, for me, it's gonna sound, um, generic, but it's this, it's the smell of the sea. Because that can transport me out of one version of myself and into the other version of myself. Are you a big like, um, what's yours? I'm a Gemini.

• 50:18Jessie Ware?

Are you into, okay, I am not a Gemini, I'm a Libra. We're both Libras.

• 50:22Speaker 03

You're both Libras. Well, the Gemini thing is that we're like two different people and that couldn't be more true for me. One part of me loves attention, loves being in a crowd, loves being very glamorous. I love champagne and you're like, I like that I'm getting to wear Valentino to the Oscars. But the other part of me is just walks around in rain gear and fishing and working on dirtwork machines and doing construction and has this like, kind of connected this thing, but the sea takes me out of a attention-seeking part of myself. And it really connects me, um, to something. Uh, I think a little bit greater. So that's the sea.

• 51:03Jessie Ware?

I wanna go to the sea now. You've made, you've really sold it to me, Brandy. No, I love it.

• 51:06Speaker 02

Do you need a picnic to take in the back of the car?

• 51:10Speaker 03

I am absolutely stuffed and like, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate it. It was delicious. Thanks, you guys.

• 51:14Jessie Ware?

Oh, you're so sweet. You're wonderful. I love the record. I'm thrilled that you got, got to do this.

• 51:21Speaker 03

  I know.

• 51:21Jessie Ware?

For the, you know, the twelve year old person that, you know, I just think it's, um, it's magic and I kind of feel like you could probably do anything that you put your mind to. So, thank you so much, Brandy.

• 51:31Speaker 03

That means a lot coming from you.

• 51:32Jessie Ware?

Oh, good to see you. Thank you.

• 51:33Speaker 03

  Thank you. I'll try.

• 51:35Jessie Ware?

But I can't wait and, and we're gonna, I, I've got it in my diary. I'm gonna, I wanna come to the Royal Albert Hall.

• 51:39Speaker 03

Do, please, please, we all come.

• 51:41Speaker 02

  I'd love to.

• 51:42Speaker 03

And you guys should keep doing this. It's really cool.

• 51:44Jessie Ware?

  Oh, we are.

• 51:45Speaker 02

  Till I pop my clogs.

• 52:02Jessie Ware?

Well, it's official. I'm completely in love with Brandy Carlisle. That was such a lovely conversation. And she's funny, a generous, talented, and tells a great story.

• 52:17Speaker 02

  I know. Candy Bar Lyle.

• 52:20Jessie Ware?

  Candy Bar Lyle.

• 52:21Speaker 02

  The best ice cream name.

• 52:23Jessie Ware?

That was so good. And Ben and Jer, if you don't do that, you're fools.

• 52:26Speaker 02

They're your fools. Fools to yourselves.

• 52:28Jessie Ware?

Yeah. Thank you, Brandy, for coming on. I mean, she's been doing schleps. But I bet you the bed that she's going back to in Sir Elton's is so comfy.

• 52:38Speaker 02

Do you think he's given her a key to get in?

• 52:45Speaker 02

Do you think Elton's, look, let yourself in and make a cup of tea before you go to bed.

• 52:49Jessie Ware?

Maybe like she's got somebody ready for a foot rub for her or something.

• 52:52Speaker 02

  I know.

• 52:52Jessie Ware?

Anyway, just amazing. Who Believes in Angels is out on the fourth of April. It's

• 52:59Speaker 02

  gorgeous.

• 53:00Jessie Ware?

  It's brilliant and just

• 53:01Speaker 02

  Rousing and incredible.

• 53:03Jessie Ware?

And the songwriting on it is unbelievable and it's just so exciting to hear Elton John and Brandy Carlisle singing together and creating together. So, yeah. Uh, go and listen to it. And also go and listen to Brandy's music. I mean, you won't be able to see her because she's just sold out the whole tour. Because she's just like that.

• 53:22Speaker 02

  We'll get a ticket.

• 53:23Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 53:25Speaker 02

  Good.

• 53:25Jessie Ware?

  I'm, I'm going.

• 53:26Speaker 02

Oh, it was a banging meal, by the way. There's no buts. I thought it was delicious.

• 53:31Jessie Ware?

  Thank you, Mum.

• 53:31Speaker 02

Just what you need on a Friday night. It was delicious. It was exotic and gorgeous. Really nice.

• 53:38Jessie Ware?

Thank you for listening and we'll see you next week.
