Mom's Car: Tim Lovestedt

On this week’s episode of Mom’s Car we welcome comedic legend and fellow Groundlings alum Tim Lovestedt. Tim, Dax, and Best Friend Aaron Weakley talk through the dish on Brad, working in wine, Tim getting a DUI at the police department where his dad worked, the namesake of The Worker tall boy, being tuned into the male Midwest supper courtship, Tim and Dax’s Sunday Company mythology, and achieving the most comfortable level of fame. #sponsored by @Allstate. Hello and welcome to Mom's Car. Today, we have another old friend of mine, Tim Lovestedt. One of my first friends in LA. We did a lot of the groundlings together. He's incredibly funny. Checking Allstate First for a quote that could save you hundreds on car insurance. You know what's not smart? Not checking the coffee lids secure before you take that first sip. • 1:07Dax Shepard?

But now that Pitt did video, I think it's kind of over. We'll just tell people like, well, Brad Pitt did video.

• 1:13Speaker 01

  Wait, you fucking had Pitt?

• 1:14Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, last week.

• 1:15Speaker 01

No shit? So just give me a minute on that.

• 1:18Dax Shepard?

Sure, let me fire up the app.

• 1:20Speaker 01

  Did you fucking...

• 1:22Dax Shepard?

  Spray?

• 1:22Speaker 01

  Was he fucking great?

• 1:24Dax Shepard?

He was awesome, Tim. It was so wonderful and all I could have hoped for. He came in the best mood, so casual. And he mostly just was really happy and having a lot of fun. And I was like, even if I don't get anything story-wise new, you've never seen him like this in an interview. He's just having so much fun.

• 1:42Speaker 01

And did he know sort of your legend with him and all that shit? Like, all the bullshit you've talked about?

• 1:48Dax Shepard?

Well, I had to tell him, because, you know, I met him in AA. He found out I was going to a track that he was going to, and he asked if I wanted to ride up with him on a helicopter. And I was like, yes.

• 1:58Speaker 01

I'd fucking go on Donkey Back. Are you fucking kidding?

• 2:01Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:02Speaker 01

  A helicopter?

• 2:02Dax Shepard?

There's no form of conveyance I wouldn't have joined him on.

• 2:06Speaker 01

I'd carry you on a jackass's back up a fucking hill. Just hang out with you.

• 2:11Dax Shepard?

Absolutely. So I say yes to this and now I have this new fear where like, what if he discovers that my last eight appearances on Ellen, all I've talked about is him? Like, I don't want him to get scared that I'm a weirdo.

• 2:24Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:25Dax Shepard?

So I did have to say to him, I'm like, hey, you need to know, I do this bit pretty often. I certainly have done it a lot on Ellen where I go on and talk about how in love I am with you, but no reason to worry. And he's like, ah, you had a good sense of humor about it. Of course you want to see this. But then I was a guest host of Ellen while she was out of town. And when I got there, they said, hey, so we're gonna have a surprise for you while the show's going on. Just know that. We're gonna show you a clip at some point. And I'm like, okay. So I do the monologue and everything. I sit down and I say they're about to show me something. I don't know what it is. And then what they show me is Brad Pitt was on the week before and it hasn't aired yet. And it's a clip of Ellen saying to Brad Pitt, I don't know if you know this actor, Dax Shepard,

• 3:08Dax Shepard?

but he has quite a crush on you. And then they show him a montage of all the insane stuff. I've said about him getting the painting of me and him together.

• 3:17Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 3:18Dax Shepard?

I'm like half terrified of what his reaction when they come out of the clip package. And he goes, well, I have to tell you something, Ellen. I have a pretty big crush on Dax Shepard. And they're filming me and I'm the host of the show and I'm just like laughing uncontrollably. And can't believe he said that in public. One of the things I brought up with him, I was like, look, I have two of you in my head. I have a dude I know. And then I have Brad Pitt and I'm not letting go of that. And I just juggle those two things and they're different. Do you have that with anyone? And he's like, yeah, I do. I had it with Redford. He goes, I have it with Sean Penn. He's still the dude I wanted to be.

• 3:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 3:58Dax Shepard?

And he's still Sean Penn, but then he's also the guy I know. And I was like, okay, good. I'm glad to know. That it's not just me.

• 4:05Speaker 01

  That's incredible.

• 4:06Dax Shepard?

  That was lovely though.

• 4:07Speaker 01

And is that a hard out on that? Is it like you get 60 minutes?

• 4:11Dax Shepard?

So they told us hard out at 3:30. I think he was 2:00 PM. But I had a hunch they're just being protective. So A, he was 10 minutes late. So then who knows where we're at on that. But dude, we hit the two hour marker and he was showing no signs of wanting to go or anything. So yeah, it was a good like 2:20 maybe.

• 4:29Speaker 01

Nice. And what a fun like for him too, because he doesn't do, at least as far as, I mean, I'm not the media connoisseur, but he doesn't do a lot of that stuff. So I'm sure you guys were going through all kinds of fun stuff and he probably gets a kick out of it more than anything.

• 4:44Dax Shepard?

Yeah, he just had a great attitude about the whole thing. And yes, I was shocked as I started doing my research on him. Usually I have so many different interviews I can watch of people. And there's shockingly little amount of him in interviews. He doesn't go on the late night talk shows really. You know, he's done Ellen, he did Oprah.

• 5:03Speaker 02

I can't think of ever seeing him on a late night.

• 5:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 5:07Speaker 02

  I'm sure he's done it.

• 5:07Speaker 01

Did you guys talk about Jesse James?

• 5:09Dax Shepard?

No, I knew you would want me to talk to.

• 5:12Speaker 01

Oh my God. I'd spend two hours just on that movie.

• 5:14Dax Shepard?

Yeah, you might've not been the right man for the job.

• 5:17Speaker 01

No, no. I would have honestly been so specific and weird with my questions.

• 5:24Dax Shepard?

It would not have been good. You take a pause mid word, not even a beat between words, mid word.

• 5:29Speaker 01

I'm having an argument with myself. Is that a trout or a salmon underneath the frozen lake? When you shoot down at the water? I would, yeah, it would have been bad.

• 5:39Dax Shepard?

But I had read that in a previous interview, he was describing where he's from Springfield, Missouri.

• 5:45Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 5:46Dax Shepard?

He says, you know, it's Mark Twain country. It's Jesse James country. So I do think he definitely identifies with that part of it. Yeah, I think Monica summed it up best. Well, luckily, because all the Formula One stuff was at the end. And once we were talking about cars and motorcycles, he was like ignited.

• 6:06Speaker 01

Was that sort of the fulcrum of why he came on? Of course, you've always wanted him, but the F1 thing just sort of delivered him.

• 6:12Dax Shepard?

Ten little things, right? Like, he had to bring Cooper out on stage for something. And at one point, he said, like, give me some things about Bradley. I have to bring him out on stage. And as a thank you, I'll do armchair expert. Like, he just kind of threw that out there. And I'm like, ah, yes, here's ten funny jokes about Bradley. Like, he's kind of flirted with doing it. But then, if you're gonna go talk about Formula One on a show, I'm not saying we're the best podcast in the world or anything, but you're not gonna find a single person in show business that knows as much about Formula One as I do. So if you want to talk about how nitty gritty they got, you really can only come to me. Arnett likes F1, but I don't know the specificity of his tricks. Brad did a ton of the driving. We've been on the motorcycle track together. So I think that was a big element of it.

• 6:55Speaker 01

That's amazing. I'm so proud of you.

• 6:57Dax Shepard?

  Oh, thank you.

• 6:58Speaker 01

  When you were airing it.

• 6:59Dax Shepard?

So it'll come out on Wondery Plus Monday.

• 7:02Speaker 01

  Monday.

• 7:02Dax Shepard?

And then Wide the following Monday.

• 7:05Speaker 01

Let's say you recorded today with your guest. How long does that take? What's the turnaround on that?

• 7:10Dax Shepard?

It really depends where they're at in the schedule. So like, we will interview people where their project's maybe a full month out, a month and a half out.

• 7:18Speaker 01

Oh, so you sort of time it for them.

• 7:19Dax Shepard?

She just edits as we need to do the fact check. That's like her finish line of when the edit has to be done. So that she'll have gotten her facts and everything. And then also, it's gonna be coming out within five days, so all that needs to be done. There have been like crazy quick turnarounds where it's like, last minute, we get a guest and it has to come out in four days. And the dream is when they give me a month. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Like, someone just pitched for a book in September. I'm like, yes, that's exactly what we need. What was your day, Tim?

• 7:47Speaker 01

Well, I work in wine, so I was all over Burbank, Glendale, and Eagle Rock. Just getting counts, because it's the beginning of the month, so I was getting counts on the floor, cases.

• 7:57Dax Shepard?

Like, how many of soul in inventory?

• 7:59Speaker 01

What we have on the floor, like, displays. So my rep is in Budapest right now.

• 8:04Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 8:04Speaker 01

So I'm covering. For her and then that was it.

• 8:07Dax Shepard?

Do you think they couldn't have picked a better person to represent a wine product? Cause you have the healthiest relationship with drinking of annoyingly so that I've ever seen.

• 8:18Speaker 01

It does get crazy when it crosses over into like, so are you a Merlot guy? Are you a Chardonnay? I'm like, yeah, I'm not really into any of it.

• 8:25Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I'm a high life guy. You're forced to drink some whiskey.

• 8:29Speaker 01

Yeah, I like to know duels. I don't know.

• 8:31Dax Shepard?

  Do you duelers?

• 8:32Speaker 01

  I'm a dollar.

• 8:33Dax Shepard?

But you also will party because when we were first becoming friends, which I think we should get into the origin of that. You were definitely like, hey, there's a Patrick Swayze semi truck driving movie coming out. I'll come over with a six pack. Let's go to the theater with a six pack and watch this semi movie.

• 8:49Speaker 01

Well, I don't mean to step on your toes, but they were Coors banquet tall boys. This is where my drinking gets a little weird. If you make a tall boy available, I'm in. And especially like at the ball game, the Kings game here in LA.

• 9:04Dax Shepard?

  Your hometown favorite.

• 9:05Speaker 01

Oh yeah. They have tall boys. I don't know if it moderates my drinking because I'm like, oh, I'm just going to have that.

• 9:11Dax Shepard?

You have plenty. You don't need to rush. You don't need to panic.

• 9:14Speaker 01

Right. And I love a tall boy. And that's what we did was that black dog. Was that the?

• 9:18Dax Shepard?

Black dog. I was just about to say black dog.

• 9:20Speaker 01

  With Randy Travis.

• 9:21Dax Shepard?

What a premise. Every truck driver will eventually see the black dog. And he's too tired to drive. That was like the thread of the, am I wrong? That was the whole movie. So tired.

• 9:34Speaker 01

Whoever wrote Black Dog. The great thing about any, any movie involving truck driving, you're just the potential gritty sequel to Smokey and the Bandit. Cause that's the only reason why we were there.

• 9:45Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 9:46Speaker 01

Is we were like, well, it's trucks.

• 9:48Dax Shepard?

But do you remember, like, first of all, if you had semis in your movie, I was there. Cause also maximum overdrive. I don't think I was ever more excited for a movie. I'm like, wait, the semis go crazy?

• 9:58Speaker 01

Yeah. Or convoy. It's like, yeah, it's Christopherson. I don't even know who the fuck that is, but it's trucks.

• 10:04Dax Shepard?

  And a semi.

• 10:05Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 10:05Dax Shepard?

When your little boy semis are awesome.

• 10:07Speaker 01

Oh, man. I just remember also I had at a summer camp, this counselor, we would have to go to like a lake or out to the beach. And you're on the. Freeway, he would want us on the opposing traffic. He'd be like, guess the truck before it gets close. And you got really good at like White Freightliner, Kenworth or Peterbilt. And so you'd be able to pick those trucks out. It was such a weird skill.

• 10:31Dax Shepard?

You had to, or you weren't a boy.

• 10:32Speaker 01

No, no, I was nine, but not really.

• 10:35Dax Shepard?

  You were a fucking sissy.

• 10:38Speaker 01

But what a weird skill set to develop as a child.

• 10:41Dax Shepard?

You could do that, though. You could eventize like having a six pack of tall boys. And really dial into what is so joyful about that.

• 10:50Speaker 01

Zero interest to have more than one or two. I was always good at moderating my alcohol.

• 10:55Dax Shepard?

And the irony that you got a DUI and I didn't. The notion that I would be going to pick you up.

• 11:02Speaker 01

True. And the worst part is, yes, bailing me out. And the fact that I was in the jail that my dad worked at. And I'm sitting there, they're like, Love's dead, huh? I'm like, yeah, yeah.

• 11:15Dax Shepard?

  Was he on duty?

• 11:16Speaker 01

No, he had retired years ago, but there was probably two or three people who knew him.

• 11:21Dax Shepard?

He retired before he died, because he died really young, right?

• 11:23Speaker 01

He did. He retired in eighty seven.

• 11:26Dax Shepard?

  At what age?

• 11:27Speaker 01

  Thirty.

• 11:29Dax Shepard?

  Twenty eight.

• 11:29Speaker 01

But he did. He retired at like forty, forty one or forty two.

• 11:33Dax Shepard?

Wow. And was that standard back then?

• 11:36Speaker 01

No, he had been in for, I would say, maybe eighteen years. And he had health issues. I mean, he did not take care of himself.

• 11:43Dax Shepard?

Well, you said he was an L I P D detective. I think it's implicit that he didn't take care of himself right in the eighties.

• 11:48Speaker 01

  And especially back then.

• 11:49Dax Shepard?

  Was he smoking cigarettes?

• 11:51Speaker 01

Smoking and drinking every night. And I think it's probably the reason why I never liked drinking too much. We all have the drunk family members that ruin it for us.

• 11:59Dax Shepard?

I love a tall boy too. Well, you know, I'd love it how it came in any size, but I was always doing quick math at the liquor store. You go to the cooler and you got a twelve pack, a case that's maybe on sale. Three tall boys for five bucks or something else going on. And I go, all right, how many ounces is in this deal? Then I gotta add the fucking Michigan deposit on there.

• 12:24Speaker 01

The most thinking you had done.

• 12:30Dax Shepard?

Really kept yourself sharp by going there and crunching those numbers.

• 12:35Dax Shepard?

Yeah, my thing was you remember when you come see me when I lived in Santa Monica, my hack was I had figured out the thirty-two ounces of High Life for a dollar nineteen at Savon. I'm like, you model that out, that's a fucking six pack for three bucks. Like, what are we talking about?

• 12:49Speaker 02

You introduced me to the thirty-two ounce. I didn't even know they made such a thing.

• 12:53Dax Shepard?

A corn, a corn and a beer. Yeah, no one wanted it. So they were always slashing price. They were like, what is that? I'll just get a six pack if I want to drink thirty plus ounces of beer. My preference, of course, is the worker. Now, did you and I dub it that or did Nate and I dub it that?

• 13:08Speaker 02

I, of course, feel like I was involved.

• 13:12Dax Shepard?

So the tall boy's sixteen ounces and the worker's twenty-four ounces.

• 13:17Speaker 01

Well, that's what I'm referring to is the real.

• 13:20Dax Shepard?

  The worker.

• 13:20Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, I like that one.

• 13:22Dax Shepard?

The worker is the way to go. You gotta earn that beer.

• 13:25Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 13:25Dax Shepard?

That's made for the big boys who get a lot of work. I mean, you know what? You're not allowed to have that at lunch.

• 13:31Speaker 01

Also, you had to be deliberate with it because if you weren't, it got warm in your hand and the beer tasted like piss by the time you got through.

• 13:37Speaker 02

  Yeah, you couldn't.

• 13:38Speaker 01

So you had to really get after it.

• 13:39Dax Shepard?

  There's a time crunch. There's a ticking clock.

• 13:41Speaker 01

  Guys, we're on the clock.

• 13:42Speaker 02

Yeah. Oh, hey, there we go.

• 13:45Dax Shepard?

  Boom, that's a juice.

• 13:47Speaker 02

It's gonna be an all day. Yeah, that's gonna be like six pickups.

• 13:52Dax Shepard?

Yeah, this might get messy. Ah, our favorite place.

• 13:55Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 13:56Dax Shepard?

We have picked up from here, uh, I don't know, about a half dozen times now.

• 14:00Speaker 02

What was the story you worked at?

• 14:01Speaker 01

  Von's.

• 14:02Speaker 02

  Von's.

• 14:02Speaker 01

And then I worked at Gelson's.

• 14:04Speaker 02

Why do I picture you in there?

• 14:06Speaker 01

  Well, I worked there forever.

• 14:07Speaker 02

I know. I'm like, did we see you? Did I see you in there?

• 14:10Speaker 01

You guys might have rolled in there.

• 14:11Dax Shepard?

There's some stories that have taken place at the grocery store that I always tell, like, first and foremost, that Tim blew his ACL out.

• 14:19Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 14:20Dax Shepard?

  Just standing.

• 14:20Speaker 01

  Yeah, I know.

• 14:21Dax Shepard?

And then like hit the deck.

• 14:26Speaker 01

It was one of those pains that was so, whatever it was, it was something in my leg where I couldn't move, where it stung me. And I was in the check stand. I'm like, what is... So then they, they put me on light duty and I had to sit in the manager's office and like stamp these papers. You know, the punishment was way worse than the pain. By the way, that food smells fucking...

• 14:50Dax Shepard?

Oh, yeah. Go ahead, take a little bite.

• 14:54Speaker 01

Can we get a little? What are we doing?

• 14:57Dax Shepard?

But it was interesting, like when we were all at the Groundlings, so maybe I want to go chronologically how we get to the Groundlings. But just the notion that people had all these different jobs. Most people were waiters. A lot of people were doing enough commercials that they were kind of self-sufficient, didn't have jobs. I was working at shows and shoots. And then Tim was in the union.

• 15:16Speaker 01

Well, no, it was like a clerk and a checker, throwing product, doing all that stuff. But, you know, as you get older and you look back, it's like, there were people that didn't have to work. Like, what an advantage to have that kind of capital where you were like, yeah, all I do is audition and I take extra classes and I'm always available if you want to write a sketch. My time was so regimented. It was like, look, I can write for maybe an hour and a half in the morning.

• 15:43Dax Shepard?

Yeah, that had to be really challenging.

• 15:44Speaker 01

Not just me, but for a lot of people, because you didn't have that clean slate and all that money where your rent was being paid. And it was such an advantage.

• 15:52Dax Shepard?

Yeah, big time. Okay, so we met through Kareem, who we had met in Santa Barbara. Yes. On our road trip. And then I looked him up when I got here and he had mentioned like, Groundlings is something. Like, I didn't know how to get into comedy and he was who told me how. And then you guys had already known each other from a different comedy?

• 16:14Speaker 01

Yeah, we were at a theater in the valley where we were doing improv. But I loved Kareem because he had a little bit of a fearlessness to him. I just wanted to hang out with that guy. Like, he was super funny.

• 16:25Dax Shepard?

Remember he was doing the alternative comedy thing. I was going like, oh, it's so scary. Like, all these guys are so good.

• 16:30Speaker 01

Yeah. And he also pushed the limits on that. He was doing things that people back then were like, what are you doing? So then you and I had met and I remember we hung out outside of Kareem, which is always a weird thing.

• 16:44Dax Shepard?

Well, that's the thing I remember. I invited you over to my house.

• 16:47Speaker 01

I think even something as simple to watch a movie or make...

• 16:50Dax Shepard?

No, I think I was cooking you spaghetti.

• 16:52Speaker 01

  With the carrots in it.

• 16:53Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It was delightful. I'm kind of proud of myself for that invite because it's so romantic at that age. I'm basically like, hey, do you want to come over and I'll cook you dinner?

• 17:02Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 17:02Dax Shepard?

Yeah, but again. You weren't scared at all.

• 17:04Speaker 01

No, because I'm tuned into the Midwest thing and I'm like, yeah, this guy who I just met is going to make me supper. Let's go.

• 17:13Speaker 01

  Carrots in it?

• 17:13Dax Shepard?

Might have a nap afterwards. Ton of carrots.

• 17:19Speaker 01

We'll go for a light one.

• 17:21Dax Shepard?

You're gonna see better than you've ever seen. Throw those glasses right in the garbage.

• 17:25Speaker 01

You made me like a beet salad.

• 17:27Dax Shepard?

With a Greek salad? Greek salad, yeah, yeah. That was when I had gotten the recipe for the dressing, but it yielded like eight gallons.

• 17:34Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 17:35Dax Shepard?

That's what the restaurant would use. I was cutting it down as much as could be cut down. But at some point, some of the ingredients wouldn't work. So I did have to commit to like, I made two and a half gallons of this dressing. So I was constantly trying to get people that Greek salad at my house.

• 17:49Speaker 01

It was delicious, that Greek salad. And then we hung out.

• 17:52Dax Shepard?

  We all got a ton.

• 17:53Speaker 01

  A ton.

• 17:53Dax Shepard?

My memory, yeah, we became really good buddies. I feel like we were similar in that like, it did not take much. Let's get in the car and go drive around Hollywood and see what kind of weird shit's happening.

• 18:03Speaker 01

We also sort of weren't invested in it. And I know that sounds weird to say. We liked making fun of whatever was happening for the sake of making fun of it. I don't really care that there's other people here. I just want to make that guy laugh. So we were just making each other laugh the whole time.

• 18:20Dax Shepard?

A lot of nights spent driving around. A lot of nights going up to Cream's. And then Cream would move throughout the city and he'd introduce us to kind of a whole new way of thing. Then he was in Hollywood, just like out of swingers, we'd end up going to these parties in the Hollywood Hills that none of us were invited to. And you'd take eight cars. He was kind of our gateway.

• 18:38Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 18:39Dax Shepard?

I feel like I started Girlings before you, but then I had a big break and you started after.

• 18:44Speaker 01

I was thinking about this the other day. So we were friends. I had gone through that advanced part where you basically do two shows. And after those two shows, they're separated by five or six weeks. I forget the exact amount. But you do five weeks of classes, then there's a show, another five weeks, then you do. A show and based on those two shows, they decide if they want you in the Sunday company. Well, they had decided that they wanted to have me repeat and it was really disappointing. I love the people that I was with. Andrea Savage was in that group, Jim Cashman, Steve Little. Those were my people and I was definitely disappointed and then I got reignited into it after a while.

• 19:27Dax Shepard?

Really quick, was there a battle though with your pride at that moment like I can't repeat?

• 19:33Speaker 01

I don't know if I was like, oh, well, that was a big injustice or whatever. I didn't have that issue.

• 19:38Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 19:39Speaker 01

But of course you're disappointed because in your mind, you're like, okay, well, those are my friends. I'm going to go up with them and we're going to be in the Sunday company. So then what happened is after some time, they had called me and said, somebody had quit from the current advanced show. Did I want to hop in? You guys had already started.

• 19:57Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 19:58Speaker 01

And that was your group with Caitlin and Josh.

• 20:01Dax Shepard?

Which I had had a huge gap between level three and four because I was going to UCLA and whatever other reasons.

• 20:07Speaker 01

And I knew that you were in, it was Mary Jo who called and I said, you know, Mary Jo, let me call Dax. Because my thing was like, well, this is your experience. I don't want to be like your buddy showing up in your advanced late, doing fucking Tim Love's dead shit, like yelling and screaming at the audience. And you were obviously awesome about it. You were like, if you want to do it, I mean, we've already been in for a couple of weeks. It's one of those decisions where I was like, yeah, of course I want to do it with my buddy. Who gives a shit?

• 20:36Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 20:37Speaker 01

And we did it and it ended up great. Like we both went on to Sunday. But yeah, it was a little daunting because you guys had already known each other and I didn't really know anybody. Was Larry in our group?

• 20:46Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 20:47Speaker 01

  Larry, I knew Larry.

• 20:48Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Yeah. I remember being so jealous of Larry because he was in like seven national running commercials at any given time. He like drove a Lexus and maybe had a condo. And I was like, this dude is fucking ready to retire.

• 20:59Speaker 01

Larry, Larry was definitely, he had so many commercials.

• 21:03Dax Shepard?

Slade. Not only did he do a good job with that, but he also handled quite effortlessly our clear jealousy. Everyone there is going to commercial auditions. And not get him, and he had a great sense of humor and self-deprecation about his raging success. We almost suffered from, and I think this would be a problem like of Aaron and I went through together too, which is like, our sense of humor is already 10 jokes down the road. It's so specific already. To catch you up to why we started here, it's like you almost needed a year of inside jokes before you would think that was funny.

• 21:36Speaker 01

But we had that stupid sketch where we were duck hunters. And all we talked about was how exciting it was about to get.

• 21:47Speaker 01

And then we kept checking in with the audience, like, right now it's quiet, but in about four to five minutes, things are gonna get very exciting.

• 21:57Dax Shepard?

There's gonna be a fervor of activity.

• 22:01Speaker 01

And then we talked about how exciting, the excitement was gonna be. The stupidest.

• 22:08Dax Shepard?

  Nothing ever happens.

• 22:09Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 22:10Dax Shepard?

Also, what an innocent error. We had a 30 out of six and a 12 gauge shotgun.

• 22:15Speaker 01

  In the theater.

• 22:16Dax Shepard?

  In the theater, yeah.

• 22:18Speaker 01

I didn't go to drama school. Like, I didn't know you couldn't bring.

• 22:21Dax Shepard?

Firearms weren't welcomed in the creative space, yeah. And even the notion that we both had some weaponry to bring.

• 22:30Speaker 01

I had like my dad's gun. Your dad has a gun? I was like, yeah, he's got a bunch of them.

• 22:34Dax Shepard?

So this week, the people that we were chatting with, I've been kind of trying to think of like a broader theme. Have you ever met my friend Ryan Hansen?

• 22:44Speaker 01

  Yes, but like glancing.

• 22:45Dax Shepard?

Okay, so Ryan, when I think of him, I think popular. No matter where he's at, he's like the most likeable, he's charming, he can do backflips, he was an athlete, he's kind, he's cute. And so I really wanted to talk about just like being popular. The one I wanted to talk about with you, only if you're open to it, feel comfortable with it. I have an enormous amount of, I guess you would call it survivor's guilt, from the groundlings.

• 23:13Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 23:13Dax Shepard?

Because I had Josh Nathan, who I just thought was a fucking brilliant genius.

• 23:19Speaker 01

He was a machine, like a writing machine.

• 23:21Dax Shepard?

Every one of his were pretty damn good. His consistency rate was off the charts.

• 23:25Speaker 01

And the gap between throwing something up on Wednesday and it hitting the stage on Sunday, he always had the smallest gap.

• 23:32Dax Shepard?

Yes, and I'll say he was a better actor than I was. Like, he just had a lot of skills that I certainly didn't have, as did many people in there. I don't think anyone could really be there unless you're Melissa, maybe.

• 23:43Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 23:44Dax Shepard?

And think like, I'm the shit here.

• 23:46Speaker 01

  Right.

• 23:47Dax Shepard?

I don't know if you agree. I was just a nod of pretty much everyone's talent that was there.

• 23:53Dax Shepard?

Stay tuned for more Mom's Car. We are supported by Allstate. You know what's smart? Checking Allstate first for a quote that could save you hundreds on car insurance. You know what's not smart? Not checking the backseat of your car before telling your coworkers to hop in. Nothing like having to explain why there's a half-eaten sandwich from last week and what appears to be every napkin I've collected since 2019 back there. And speaking of car-related mishaps, not checking the height clearance before pulling into a parking structure? That's definitely not smart. The sound of your roof rack scraping concrete is something that stays with you. Yeah, checking first is smart. So check Allstate first for a quote that could save you hundreds. • 25:39Speaker 01

  And so you feel what?

• 25:40Dax Shepard?

The notion that some people hit the jackpot and some didn't feels terrible on my side.

• 25:47Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 25:48Dax Shepard?

I mean, I'm delighted I hit the jackpot and hit the lottery, but I also just feel like there is just no justice. There are a lot of people that certainly deserve to hit the jackpot, if not the same amount as me, more than me. And I feel bad about that. And I was just curious what the experience from being in it and having some people around you pop in really significant ways.

• 26:11Speaker 01

You know, there's a lot of people in our circle that not only got big, but got kind of massive. I mean, Kristen Wiig was in Sunday Company with me. And when she becomes this thing, it's crazy.

• 26:22Dax Shepard?

All in our tenure, like Ben and Melissa, Ben Falcone, Melissa McCarthy, even Octavia Spencer, who hung around. There was that one Academy Awards where Ben and Nat were nominated.

• 26:32Speaker 01

  Or Jim and Nat.

• 26:33Dax Shepard?

I'm sorry, Jim and Nat, Netflix and Jim Rash. There's four of us that are at the Academy Awards nominated.

• 26:41Speaker 02

  Caitlin Olson, she's.

• 26:42Dax Shepard?

  She's incredibly successful.

• 26:44Speaker 01

I just think there's so much in the world that I can't control. There's only so much that I can control. You know, there's a lot of it that's timing and luck, but also what? Everyone I know is going to become famous? Like, that's not reasonable at all. I get a kick out of people getting a kick out of my friends. And to me, it was always more about, I wouldn't give that time away for anything. And all the other stuff, nobody knows what it was like for all of us to be there late on a Wednesday night with Guy Stevenson putting up another gorilla sketch.

• 27:16Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, or Robot.

• 27:17Speaker 01

Or like Callie McIntyre on a bike on stage, doing a sketch that she had written on a dinner napkin. All of those things, those are mine.

• 27:25Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 27:25Speaker 01

  And they're way more fun.

• 27:28Dax Shepard?

What I would want to say, but then would stop myself because I would be afraid it would sound patronizing is, and I've said it without you present a million times, it never got better.

• 27:38Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 27:39Dax Shepard?

That was it. Being in the Sunday Company, having like a show to do on Sunday and actual people came and they paid money and they wanted to be there and it. Sold out and they loved it. That's about as great as it ever.

• 27:51Speaker 01

And that theater sold out every night. We never had to say, bring friends. My only, cause I did two years in the Sunday company, which is kind of unheard of. I just wish I knew at the time that two years, like swallow it up. There always felt like every six months, there's this end game.

• 28:10Dax Shepard?

It's hard to enjoy it because you're always a little panicked. You're gonna get kicked out.

• 28:14Speaker 01

Yeah. And it becomes this competitive thing and.

• 28:18Dax Shepard?

You're counting other people's sketches. Yeah. It's a competitive environment and only so many are gonna get in.

• 28:25Speaker 01

What a gift, especially at that time. You look at the time we're in now and things have changed so much. But in that time, you could really let loose. You could create to your maximum. Sounds weird to say, but potential, no matter how deep you wanted to dig on the weird things you thought were funny. You did have a space to do that.

• 28:43Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Even more fun was Wednesday. Oh, because you're putting up sketches that ultimately the director will go, you can't do that. And that's like what you want to do. You pretty much want to write the sketches that you can't do.

• 28:55Speaker 01

Also like watching your friends try stuff. And then also not try stuff where you're like, you're doing another one of those ones.

• 29:02Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 29:03Speaker 02

So that's how you feel now. You never went through a depression or a sourness or anything.

• 29:10Speaker 01

No, this is a funny memory, but we went to the Without a Paddle premiere, which was at, was that at Warner Brothers? Paramount.

• 29:17Dax Shepard?

  Paramount.

• 29:18Speaker 01

And they had built a lake.

• 29:19Dax Shepard?

  Flooded the.

• 29:20Speaker 01

Flooded the parking lot or whatever.

• 29:22Dax Shepard?

Yeah, they had a tank that they would film like naval scenes in.

• 29:25Speaker 01

Yeah. And you could rent like a canoe or something.

• 29:29Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, people's seats were canoes.

• 29:31Speaker 01

Yeah. And I remember being with Caitlin, we were walking to the bar. For us, it was weird. It's like, what is this? And why is Dax in a movie? Like this is fucking incredible. And why is there a lake? There was a lot.

• 29:45Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 29:45Speaker 01

And somebody walked by me that was on the crew of that movie. And they were talking to someone else and they said, yeah, man, it's crazy. Dax has always been that way. And I was like, first of all. There's no way you've known Dax that long. But then it also set my mind right as to like the trajectory of how these things go. That success or that experience is becoming its own thing and it's not for me to covet. Like I can't sit and fight against that guy's memory or the way he talks about you. It's like, he doesn't even know Aaron Weekly. How the fuck can he say Dax? He's been like that forever.

• 30:26Dax Shepard?

Right. And he doesn't know 10 Aaron Weekly stories.

• 30:28Speaker 01

Yes. So that sort of set me up for that famous friends experience. My friends are going to be my friends, not based on the fact that they're famous, but because we are friends.

• 30:38Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 30:39Speaker 01

So that sort of set me up, that one guy, that grip on that movie.

• 30:43Dax Shepard?

And then, you know, what you did a way better job of and that I'm quite envious of. Because like as we were saying, the poker game, I just started going to that poker game again. I think I've gone twice and it was like through a series of bumping into Ben enough, I guess. Where he invited me, which is like, I couldn't wait to go and it was so fun. But you did a much better job. Probably the most profound feeling is like getting kicked out. I felt ashamed of that. I was embarrassed to have been kicked out of the Sunday company. And then in the embarrassment, I was also resentful at whatever group of people I determined were a part of that decision. I just left with a bad taste in my mouth. You know, I did not leave on great terms.

• 31:22Speaker 01

More than half of the people probably have that experience.

• 31:25Dax Shepard?

Yeah, it's gotta be, right? Cause there's so few slots on the main stage. Through numerous reasons, I both got really busy. I got to go do movies all over the place. I was like starting that whole experience, but I didn't do a good job maintaining those grounding friendships. And you did, you stayed very dialed into that whole crew. And I'm pretty envious of, especially like when I went to poker, I was like, oh yeah, I fucking miss this so much. This is so fun. You and I stayed friends. Yeah, you and I.

• 31:52Speaker 01

But I've always liked being part of a team. I know that sounds really weird. When it all ended, since I was the sort of senior guy, like when, whenever we would do things, I had to help organize. I was like being part of a team. So that part of it, I don't know. I just carried on with it.

• 32:08Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 32:08Speaker 01

You know, I wish I could. I could see those people more.

• 32:10Dax Shepard?

But did you go through any, like, when you were kicked out, what was your experience with that?

• 32:16Speaker 01

Well, I mean, I did two years, so I definitely was not happy about it, but I sort of pivoted. Cause I felt like after the Sunday company, I had developed a skill set that I had never had in my life, which was like a hardworking, every Wednesday I'm gonna have my stuff written. Every Sunday I'm gonna perform, I'm gonna line everything up. And so I finished college after the Sunday company because I was like, well, I want a degree. So in order to do that, I'm just gonna transfer all that hard work and that work ethic.

• 32:45Dax Shepard?

It teaches you a writing discipline, which is almost impossible to learn.

• 32:48Speaker 01

And the competitive part was, okay, if I'm gonna be doing this, then I need to do it. So that means investing time in the writing, investing time in the other people, investing time in making the show better. Because Sunday, I remember having shows where I was only in one sketch. And I was like, that just can't fly.

• 33:07Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 33:07Speaker 01

So I gotta figure out, how do I get on stage?

• 33:09Dax Shepard?

Then you can get a little Machiavellian, like, oh, I gotta give so and so a sketch.

• 33:13Speaker 01

Or I just yell more. I remember.

• 33:15Dax Shepard?

I guess I gotta be louder next week.

• 33:17Speaker 01

I remember Josh coming up to me, I think I had four or five sketches. It was really great for me. I did a couple of sketches that I really liked. And Josh was like, you're doing like four or five sketches where you yell, do you think that's too much? And I was like, come on, man. I'm like, I feel so good right now. You just killed me. Yeah.

• 33:37Dax Shepard?

Are you concerned about your voice? Have you been taking throat coke? You weren't embarrassed when that happened to you, or were you?

• 33:44Speaker 01

  No, I was worn out.

• 33:46Dax Shepard?

Okay. You're welcome to the reprieve.

• 33:48Speaker 02

  Meet at door.

• 33:49Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 33:50Speaker 02

You might get to meet somebody.

• 33:52Speaker 01

  I like to meet people.

• 33:54Speaker 02

  Jacob's in for a surprise.

• 33:56Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 33:58Dax Shepard?

Oh, this is so close. This was a freebie virtually.

• 34:01Speaker 02

  Oh dude, that's a dropy?

• 34:02Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 34:06Dax Shepard?

  Nice little bit of.

• 34:07Speaker 01

  Little bit of scratch.

• 34:08Dax Shepard?

  Nice little bit of ched.

• 34:10Speaker 02

Now a guy can make a living off these kind of deliveries.

• 34:12Dax Shepard?

  That's right.

• 34:13Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 34:13Dax Shepard?

So I guess maybe in summation, minimally, I don't need to carry as much survivor guilt in regard to you.

• 34:19Speaker 01

  No.

• 34:19Dax Shepard?

You don't seem to be mad at me.

• 34:22Speaker 01

  No.

• 34:25Dax Shepard?

But you've also gotten to witness that now firsthand, front row seat to how dynamics change around people who get success.

• 34:32Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 34:33Dax Shepard?

I don't know, is it chicken or the egg? Did other people change and then they change? Or they change and other people change?

• 34:37Speaker 02

  Yeah, who changed here?

• 34:38Dax Shepard?

  Right?

• 34:40Dax Shepard?

  Which one are you?

• 34:40Speaker 01

Are you leaving? Let's talk about that.

• 34:43Dax Shepard?

  Jesus.

• 34:44Speaker 01

That guy could not care less, Dex.

• 34:46Dax Shepard?

  No, no one can.

• 34:47Speaker 01

  Nobody cares.

• 34:48Dax Shepard?

  It's been a very humbling.

• 34:49Speaker 02

No one likes to make eye contact anyway.

• 34:51Speaker 01

  Yeah, they'll just deliver it.

• 34:52Dax Shepard?

Dope. And then the people that do, they're more confused. Yeah, that's a dude, but that's obviously not that dude.

• 34:59Speaker 01

And why does he have all those cameras? Why does he have that?

• 35:01Dax Shepard?

Now, as you might expect, when Kristen was with us, that took all the guesswork out of it. A hundred percent of the people that saw her in the backseat.

• 35:11Speaker 01

Let me ask you, do you resent her for all her success?

• 35:14Dax Shepard?

No, I'm so grateful. Because there was a long period of us together where I don't claim that I was ever more famous than her, but I was definitely more recognizable than her. Kristen, for years, people would see her and I'd see them even whisper to their friends like, "That looks like that actress Kristen Bell." When they'd see me, if they recognized me, they're like, "Yeah, that's him. He's 6'9", the huge nose, still holding tattoos." There was a long period where I would get blasted more than she would. And so, in general, I'm fucking delighted that there's someone that people are more interested in talking to than me, which is unanimous at this point. If you bump into both of us, unless you're an armcherry, you want to talk to Kristen. Like, "Go get him, girl. I'll be over here checking my phone." I take pictures a ton.

• 35:59Dax Shepard?

I'm delighted about it. I got to experience it. It's waning. I'm less and less famous every day. Longer I've not been on TV, you can feel it, and it's delightful. I almost feel like it's almost too good to trust. Like, wait, you don't get to be and then not get to be, or get the perfect amount you want. You get into a restaurant, but then you're not taking a lot of pictures.

• 36:20Speaker 02

I've seen from afar, even from Michigan, it's definitely the other people that have changed.

• 36:29Speaker 01

Oh, well, the people around you?

• 36:31Speaker 02

Yeah. When Dex was first starting out on this journey, and must be nice being in that movie.

• 36:41Speaker 01

Must be nice knowing how you're gonna pay your rent.

• 36:44Dax Shepard?

He's the exact same. We got in the movie. This is what we only could fucking wish for any of us, right? Or this is why we get excited. He did it because we knew he'd be the one to do it. I always felt like I was the only one that stayed excited. I'm like, you guys suck dude. And I'll spend my entire life sticking up for it.

• 37:02Speaker 01

When I think back at the Crowlings, Kaitlyn told me one time, she was like, I always knew Dax was gonna be famous. And I was like, you did?

• 37:08Dax Shepard?

Right, right. But based on what? His lack of headshot? Lack of representation?

• 37:14Speaker 01

  And that's honestly...

• 37:19Speaker 01

That guy and the fucking dipshit I hang out with?

• 37:21Dax Shepard?

The one who's wrestling a pretty big drinking problem, that guy?

• 37:25Speaker 01

You mean the guy that's collecting quarters so we can buy a tall boy?

• 37:28Dax Shepard?

Discharging his 12 gauge above the heads of some gang banger, racing to his apartment?

• 37:34Speaker 01

Maybe it was a mistake, but none of that became tangible where it was like, I'm gonna do this to get to SNL. Everybody said that, but for me, I was always more present than that.

• 37:45Dax Shepard?

I have in a weird way felt like moving here is a blessing in a sense. Because me, Kaitlyn, we left our family and all of our friends to do this thing. So if we left everyone for nothing, that was gonna be a big miscalculation. And I think for people like Jess, lived here, he had his friends from home, he could eat dinner at mom's house.

• 38:11Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 38:12Dax Shepard?

And I do wonder if that that prevents a little bit of the pressure you would put on yourself otherwise if you moved here.

• 38:18Speaker 01

I think there's truth in that.

• 38:19Dax Shepard?

But hence my devastation when that door shut, like Saturday Night Live is completely off the table. There's no way for me to get there now. That's over. This whole dream that's been going on for 10 years is done.

• 38:30Speaker 01

To that point too, I do remember people would from time to time audition for SNL while we were there.

• 38:37Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 38:38Speaker 01

And you would find out they didn't make it. And I remember thinking like, well, that's just crazy. So that guy can't be on SNL? So it sort of spelled out a little bit of randomness of it, I guess.

• 38:50Dax Shepard?

Well, that's what's funny. As you're even saying it, I'm remembering like, I did not think I would get to SNL. And yet I also was trying my hardest to get to SNL. Both things were true.

• 38:59Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 39:00Dax Shepard?

I was like devastated I was no longer gonna get there, but I never even thought I would get there. I'm learning you're not as neurotic as me. I think that's what I'm like this whole conversation.

• 39:08Speaker 02

  Tim's like psycho.

• 39:11Speaker 01

  Totally.

• 39:11Dax Shepard?

The thing he made it, he would have killed himself.

• 39:14Speaker 01

  Jesus.

• 39:15Dax Shepard?

  And I definitely was.

• 39:17Speaker 01

You wanna take over on the wheel? I've got children. I think people being angry is funny. And I think people getting angry with themselves and embarrassing themselves is funny. It always makes me laugh. Saying things in the worst spot is funny and for good or bad.

• 39:39Dax Shepard?

I was just having this debate with Monica and Alexander Skarsgard.

• 39:43Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 39:43Dax Shepard?

It's very Swedish, so the whole time I was just like, all I wanted to talk about was like the difference between Swedes and Americans. It's so fascinating, right? But somehow it came up. I'm like, well, let me get this straight. When you guys walk into a room and you see a dude in a wheelchair, do you not immediately go like, don't talk about running, don't talk about jumping, don't talk about how much fun you had like on a hike? I just start listing everything we gotta avoid saying. But that goes for almost anything that's in a room. It doesn't even have to be as extreme as the wheelchair. And they could not relate to that. And I thought that was like a human thing, but it's not. Do you do that?

• 40:19Speaker 01

  Of course.

• 40:21Dax Shepard?

It's a guy with an eye patch. You're like, don't bring up guns.

• 40:25Dax Shepard?

Don't bring up pirates. Don't bring up Johnny Daffy in my trigger.

• 40:31Dax Shepard?

All right, you got a question?

• 40:32Speaker 02

Yeah, Tim, and I'm wondering, because we don't know each other as well as we should.

• 40:36Speaker 01

We don't know each other that well.

• 40:37Speaker 02

No, of course, as well as we should, just from today. I don't think you're as petty.

• 40:42Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah, I know. I'm feeling kinda bad about myself. In a great way.

• 40:47Speaker 02

Anyway, wrote this down beforehand. Do you ever brag about things that you were good at, but it's a flat out lie?

• 40:56Dax Shepard?

  That no one knows.

• 40:58Speaker 01

Oh, like something that I'm not good at, but I would tell a story about how good I am at it?

• 41:02Dax Shepard?

Well, we'll go first, so that you know the bar.

• 41:06Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 41:07Dax Shepard?

I don't even know how we ended up admitting this to each other, but like I somehow admitted to him that at some point I told Guy from Groundlings, who was bigger than me and stronger than me.

• 41:17Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 41:18Dax Shepard?

And I was trying to demonstrate my bona fides.

• 41:20Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 41:21Dax Shepard?

And somehow he's, I said, I lived in Detroit. He said, oh, my God, did you ever go to the Kronk Gym? And I go, oh, yeah, all the time. I trained there. And I'm locked into this life with Guy now going on 21 years. I still text him all the time and he probably still thinks I trained at the Kronk Gym.

• 41:38Speaker 01

  With Tommy Hearns?

• 41:39Dax Shepard?

  With the Hitman Hearns.

• 41:41Speaker 01

  Of course.

• 41:42Dax Shepard?

And I happened to just randomly say that to Aaron and then he hit me with this.

• 41:46Speaker 02

Yeah, so I told him that.

• 41:49Dax Shepard?

  So much better.

• 41:50Speaker 02

I have been telling people I was a Marine.

• 42:01Speaker 02

Which came with a lot of stories. Because once you commit, you can't fucking, people want to know because that's a good story.

• 42:10Speaker 01

Did you ever wear the uniform?

• 42:12Speaker 02

Of course I was overseas and here.

• 42:16Speaker 02

And Dex can't just quit with, you trained at the most fucking famous gym in Detroit. Like, there's more that comes along, so you, you keep digging. And then I hope it doesn't get to where someone knows me good enough that knows that. So I have to keep it only between a certain group of people.

• 42:35Speaker 01

  Do me a favor.

• 42:36Dax Shepard?

But don't tell my mom that I was a Marine. When he was a Marine, he boxed in the Marines.

• 42:41Speaker 02

Oh, yeah, I boxed in the Marines. Oh, my God, I'm sorry, yeah.

• 42:45Dax Shepard?

  That was the connection.

• 42:46Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, sorry, I boxed in the Marines. Oh, my God.

• 42:52Dax Shepard?

It makes, you know, it's funny, is that, A, it makes me so happy when you told me that story. And then also like my guilt and shame over having lied about that is 11. And when I heard that you said it, I'm like, oh, this is adorable. This is like a boy trying to be a big man as a Marine and his dad was a Marine. It's so obvious what's going on.

• 43:12Speaker 02

  I just told my dad.

• 43:13Dax Shepard?

Maybe your dad wasn't a Marine.

• 43:17Speaker 02

  He lied.

• 43:19Speaker 01

It's so funny because it's semi-small but really big for you. Do you know what I mean? Like, it's not like I-

• 43:26Dax Shepard?

And it becomes almost untenable. Like, when Guy would bring it up, I'm like, oh, I'm panicked. Like, I can't remember what I did. I tell him I met Emmanuel Lewis or Stewart or whatever the trainer was. Like, I said I had lunch with-

• 43:37Speaker 01

That's one of the most interesting things about you, you know?

• 43:40Dax Shepard?

  It really is.

• 43:42Speaker 01

Have you had Tommy Hearns on the podcast?

• 43:44Dax Shepard?

Especially for Guy. That was like-

• 43:49Speaker 01

You know, one thing I have lied about-

• 43:52Dax Shepard?

  Oh, God.

• 43:52Speaker 01

I loved when I skateboarded as a kid. It was a big deal. But I didn't skateboard for that long. And-

• 44:03Speaker 01

My two best buddies, who I've known both since kindergarten, skated much longer than I did. Sure. And their stories, I mean, we have a famous story of Aaron got caught stealing wood from a construction site to make a ramp. And it was like at 2:00 in the morning. Aaron got caught by the cops and walked down the alley that everybody had hid and was like, "All right, guys, come out. They know our names. They know where we live."

• 44:32Dax Shepard?

  He rolled.

• 44:33Speaker 01

And I always tell that story in the first person.

• 44:36Dax Shepard?

  Sure.

• 44:36Speaker 01

  I was not there.

• 44:37Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 44:39Speaker 01

And half of the stories that any of those guys tell about skateboarding, I have a diary of my own. Because I love skateboard culture. I love skateboarding. I got a job and I stopped skating.

• 44:56Dax Shepard?

I've had this moment within the last year where it's like I'm meeting someone new. This is when I would lay out this lie and I go, "When are we going to stop telling people this lie?" Like, when I met people out here and I wanted to drive fast, I'd just be like, "Oh, I raced for years in Detroit." Like, just lie so that you would trust me to drive like an asshole.

• 45:16Speaker 02

Yeah, when you get far from home and you gotta keep on going.

• 45:19Dax Shepard?

Especially how you come out here and it's like you just write your own story. I was a fucking black belt in taekwondo in Detroit. I worked for the Patterson.

• 45:29Speaker 01

  I invented the assembly line.

• 45:30Dax Shepard?

  I was a telephone wire.

• 45:33Speaker 02

  I was an electrician.

• 45:34Dax Shepard?

  Mundane.

• 45:38Speaker 02

Someone was asking me like where I boxed.

• 45:41Dax Shepard?

  Oh no.

• 45:41Speaker 02

It never occurred to me like where I would be boxing, right?

• 45:44Dax Shepard?

You didn't tell that part of your story.

• 45:46Speaker 02

Yeah, I said I boxed on a ship.

• 46:05Speaker 02

So you were on like a navy ship? I'm like, yeah, exactly. The Marines, the Navy.

• 46:12Dax Shepard?

  Boxing gloves, I was boxing.

• 46:15Speaker 02

  We're all together.

• 46:15Dax Shepard?

On a balance beam. I boxed a guy on an I-beam while building a skyscraper. Aaron comes by this natural, I don't know if I have such an excuse, but the best part was his dad told us the story when we were working for him. His dad owned a roofing company and we roofed for him. He has his uncle Tom, who's incredible. This is exactly what he sounds like.

• 46:36Speaker 02

Man, what are you motherfuckers doing?

• 46:42Dax Shepard?

Jim, it's that extreme. You're like, is he Cajun? Is he black? Long, long gray hair, looks like a biker. So his dad was telling us that one time, they were both in Vietnam and his uncle was a medic. His uncle tells this elaborate story about jumping out of a helicopter and he's got his sidearm and he's got to start using his sidearm. And then this happens and that happens. When I was hearing the story, I was like, I don't think they give the medics that. Smelling some bullshit.

• 47:08Speaker 02

He said, I kill women and children.

• 47:22Dax Shepard?

Which by the way. I'm telling you, it's a smart tactic when you're a liar. You gotta add some stuff that's unflattering to yourself to build credibility. Like, well, you wouldn't be saying that, right? I killed a woman's.

• 47:37Speaker 01

  Oh my god.

• 47:38Dax Shepard?

  Oh, children's.

• 47:41Dax Shepard?

So Aaron's dad is at home a couple of years after he heard this story from Tom. And he's fucking watching a rerun of MASH.

• 47:50Dax Shepard?

And it's verbatim, every single detail he had told his dad was from an episode of MASH.

• 48:00Dax Shepard?

But to your thing with stealing stories, this is the God's truth because we've been together so much since we were 11. Sincerely, sometimes, I don't know if it's his or my story, or my story, but we were both there or we weren't. Especially like car shows, we were mostly on all the car shows together, but sometimes we weren't. And it's just straight confusing without even trying to lie.

• 48:18Speaker 02

Well, Timmy Love said, I love you to pieces.

• 48:20Speaker 01

Oh, I love you guys. Thanks for having us.

• 48:22Dax Shepard?

Well, we're like 30 years into friendship.

• 48:24Speaker 01

  It is really crazy.

• 48:25Dax Shepard?

  We're still alive.

• 48:26Speaker 01

  Still alive, still kicking.

• 48:27Dax Shepard?

  We're gonna beat our fathers.

• 48:28Speaker 01

  I know.

• 48:29Dax Shepard?

You're in the club. What, how old was your dad?

• 48:32Speaker 01

  My dad was 42.

• 48:33Dax Shepard?

Oh, yeah, that's the new winner. You just took the lead. What's your dad, 54?

• 48:38Speaker 02

  54, yeah.

• 48:39Speaker 01

That's how old he was when he died.

• 48:41Speaker 02

  Yeah, those are insane numbers.

• 48:42Speaker 01

My dad was 42. He was retired.

• 48:48Speaker 02

I don't know what's crazier, that he died or he was retired?

• 48:51Dax Shepard?

Well, then he died 10 years ago, he was retired.

• 48:55Speaker 01

  All right, love you.

• 48:56Speaker 02

  Yeah, baby.

• 48:57Speaker 01

  Thanks, guys.
