Tim Cook

This week we have Tim Cook - CEO of Apple - joining us for brunch at mums. Sandwiched between a meeting with the Prime Minister and afternoon tea with the King & Queen, Tim popped over to join us in Clapham and mum rustled up a Kedgeree. Tim brought us his favourite Californian Chardonnay and some very special spiced apple jam made from the fruits grown on Apple Park in San Fran (my kids have finished the jar!). Tim told us about waking up before 5am every day to start work, that an Apple Watch saved his dad’s life, his excitement about the upcoming F1 film, his love of caving & hiking, growing up in Alabama, receiving over 600 emails a day, and how he started his career flipping burgers at age 14 for $1 an hour. Thank you Tim for taking time to join us in Clapham, we can’t wait to pop to Cafe Macs for lunch with you soon x Hosted on Acast. • 1:56Jessie Ware?

Hello and welcome to Table manners. We're in Clapham again, I'm sorry mum.

• 2:01Speaker 05

  It's fine.

• 2:01Jessie Ware?

And I did forget the pudding. But it's in a cab, I think, on the way here.

• 2:05Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 2:06Jessie Ware?

And it's a morning affair today.

• 2:08Speaker 05

  Very early I've been up.

• 2:09Jessie Ware?

  Have you?

• 2:10Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 2:10Jessie Ware?

And there's the sweet smell of fish.

• 2:13Speaker 05

  Smoked haddock.

• 2:15Jessie Ware?

Yeah, it's quite, um, it's quite.

• 2:16Speaker 05

  It's powerful, isn't it?

• 2:17Jessie Ware?

It's powerful, much like you, Lenny.

• 2:19Speaker 05

Why, thank you, you're comparing me to smelly fish. Thank you darling. Um, why did I think, well, he wants fish, this.

• 2:28Jessie Ware?

Did he say he wanted fish?

• 2:29Speaker 05

  Yeah, he likes fish.

• 2:30Jessie Ware?

  Oh, okay.

• 2:31Speaker 05

  That's why I did it.

• 2:31Jessie Ware?

Do they have kegery in America?

• 2:33Speaker 05

  No, I don't think so.

• 2:35Jessie Ware?

  Well, we'll find out.

• 2:36Speaker 05

Don't they have kegery in most places, do they?

• 2:38Jessie Ware?

No, maybe there's a reason for that.

• 2:39Speaker 05

Yeah, because it smells when you cook it.

• 2:41Jessie Ware?

Um, we have the CEO of Apple coming on, Tim Cook. Probably one of the most influential, successful, powerful CEOs in the world in tech.

• 2:56Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 2:57Jessie Ware?

And he seems probably like the nicest one too, from what I've read.

• 3:00Speaker 05

  Seems lovely.

• 3:01Jessie Ware?

He's also quite, um, a man of mystery. You don't, not many people know that much about him. Um, he doesn't do many interviews about his personal life. And he's been in Apple for 26 years, I think.

• 3:14Speaker 05

Well, he took over from Steve Jobs, didn't he?

• 3:16Jessie Ware?

Yeah, and made it kind of one of the most profitable businesses in the world. So I'm interested, you know, we don't usually get big tech guys on the podcast. In fact, I think he's our first businessman.

• 3:29Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 3:30Jessie Ware?

That we've had. But yeah, so we, and he doesn't do that many interviews, so.

• 3:34Speaker 05

  We're very privileged.

• 3:35Jessie Ware?

We're very lucky. And apparently he's on his way to meet the king after this. So what have you made?

• 3:39Speaker 05

  I've made kegery.

• 3:40Jessie Ware?

  And I've.

• 3:41Speaker 05

Because he said he liked fish.

• 3:43Jessie Ware?

And they also said that he really likes chocolate, so.

• 3:45Speaker 05

  So you've made your chocolate.

• 3:47Jessie Ware?

Well, actually, my son made it after nursery yesterday, so I hope it hasn't got like a Lego piece. I don't know.

• 3:52Speaker 05

Or, or he's probably licked a lot of it.

• 3:54Jessie Ware?

Yeah, he's probably tasted it all. Yeah, but yeah, anyway. And so we, my three-year-old made the Nigella.

• 4:03Speaker 05

  Peanut.

• 4:04Jessie Ware?

Peanut, crunchy rocky road bars. Yeah, it's got like honeycomb in it.

• 4:08Speaker 05

  So delicious.

• 4:09Jessie Ware?

  Salted peanuts, golden syrup.

• 4:13Jessie Ware?

And dark milk chocolate and you kind of, it's like a kind of, it's like a chocolate bar and you just have it.

• 4:18Speaker 05

It's like a tray bake, yeah.

• 4:20Jessie Ware?

And we have done it for somebody else. Who did we do it for?

• 4:22Speaker 05

No, we didn't. I've made it.

• 4:23Jessie Ware?

Oh, but you've made it before.

• 4:25Speaker 05

Yeah, I've made it for you.

• 4:26Jessie Ware?

But it's a Nigella recipe and so hopefully that will just hit the spot before he goes and meets his Royal Highness.

• 4:31Speaker 05

I've done a combination recipe because I didn't think, Alex, your brother said, oh, curry for breakfast. So I didn't put, I only put a pinch of curry powder in.

• 4:42Jessie Ware?

  Oh, I like it.

• 4:43Speaker 05

Yeah, but I just wondered about it. So I've done it with cinnamon and cardamom and some mustard seeds. And so it's not untumored, so it's not overpoweringly curry. Yeah.

• 4:55Jessie Ware?

Am I allowed to test it?

• 4:56Speaker 05

No, should, no, because you'll pull your face and then I'll feel anxious. Should I grate some lime on the top? Would you have lime or not?

• 5:06Jessie Ware?

I'd need to test, taste it first, then.

• 5:07Speaker 05

No, okay, well, I've, I've done some lemon zest, so it should be enough.

• 5:11Jessie Ware?

I think a squeeze of lemon will be nice for them, him to choose to do if he wants.

• 5:17Speaker 05

I'll put some on the side.

• 5:18Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, that's what I think.

• 5:20Speaker 05

Or a lime, because he lives in.

• 5:21Jessie Ware?

  Why a lime?

• 5:22Speaker 05

Because he lives in California, darling. They all have limes there.

• 5:24Jessie Ware?

Yeah, and we're in South London.

• 5:25Speaker 05

  Okay, fine.

• 5:26Jessie Ware?

So I think the limes are going to be a bit better there.

• 5:27Speaker 05

I just wanted to make it perk him up a bit.

• 5:30Jessie Ware?

Why, why do you think he's not going to perk you?

• 5:32Speaker 05

  I don't know.

• 5:33Jessie Ware?

He's probably had like what Jake Shears has, what's it called, the red eye, where you have like four shots of coffee. And before like seven o'clock in the morning.

• 5:41Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 5:41Jessie Ware?

We'll find out. Tim Cook coming up on Table Minus.

• 6:00Jessie Ware?

  Hang on a minute.

• 6:02Speaker 06

  What is it?

• 6:02Jessie Ware?

  Oh, wow, guys.

• 6:04Speaker 06

This is my favourite California wine. Oh, wow.

• 6:08Jessie Ware?

  Oh, Tim.

• 6:10Speaker 06

  Oh, my God.

• 6:11Jessie Ware?

What is it? What kind of?

• 6:12Speaker 06

It's Kissler. I don't know if you've ever heard of it. It comes from the wine country. And it's the most marvelous Chardonnay.

• 6:21Jessie Ware?

  I love Chardonnay.

• 6:22Speaker 06

  So wonderful.

• 6:23Jessie Ware?

I'll have yours, Mum. Thank you so much. That's so kind. That's so sweet.

• 6:29Speaker 06

Most people love red wine. I really like white. This is my favorite by far.

• 6:34Jessie Ware?

  What's this? Jam?

• 6:35Speaker 06

This is some jam, but the special thing about this is it's from Apple Park.

• 6:41Jessie Ware?

  Apple Park.

• 6:42Speaker 06

And, and so we basically converted the land at Apple Park.

• 6:49Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 6:49Speaker 06

To the, all of the indigenous plants and shrubs and so forth that were there. In the beginning of Silicon Valley, before all the concrete came in and, and took over the valley. And we flipped the park from eighty percent concrete to twenty percent concrete. Put all the parking underground and returned it to the park-like setting that it used to be.

• 7:18Jessie Ware?

  So these are?

• 7:19Speaker 06

This jam is from the trees that are grown there.

• 7:22Jessie Ware?

  Oh my goodness.

• 7:23Speaker 06

And we served this in our cafe.

• 7:26Jessie Ware?

  So you planted apple trees?

• 7:27Speaker 06

  We did, yes.

• 7:28Jessie Ware?

  Only apple trees?

• 7:30Speaker 06

What else is in there? Uh, cherry trees, I believe. And all of the indigenous plants that were there in the beginning are, are back there again.

• 7:41Jessie Ware?

Thank you so much. That is so kind. Tim Cook, you're here in Clapham. You are in London for kind of forty-eight, maybe, yeah, about forty-eight hours. Um, I believe you met with our Prime Minister yesterday and you're on your way to see the King after this.

• 7:59Speaker 06

  Yes.

• 8:00Jessie Ware?

  No big deal.

• 8:01Speaker 06

It's a fabulous day. I've never met the King.

• 8:04Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 8:04Speaker 06

And he's, the fact that he's coming to Apple Battersea is such a huge deal for all of our team. And, and he's done so much from a sustainability point of view, and it's one of our core values. And of course, he does a lot for the youth as well, and we work with them on the King's Trust. And so it's a, it's a big day and a big moment for us. And of course, yesterday, we announced Apple Intelligence coming to the UK.

• 8:38Jessie Ware?

  Wow.

• 8:38Speaker 06

And so it's been a jam packed forty eight hours for us.

• 8:42Jessie Ware?

So what are you gonna serve the King? Are you gonna give him one of your favorite Chardonnays? Because you know, actually, we had a guest on recently that got given a bottle of wine from the King.

• 8:51Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 8:52Jessie Ware?

And so I feel like if you've got a spare bottle, you need to give it to the King.

• 8:56Speaker 06

Maybe that's, maybe we should do that.

• 8:58Jessie Ware?

  I think maybe.

• 8:59Speaker 06

  Does he really like wine?

• 9:00Jessie Ware?

He likes wine and he gave it to somebody else. So I feel like if that's your fave, maybe.

• 9:05Speaker 06

  Okay, all right.

• 9:06Jessie Ware?

  Think about it.

• 9:06Speaker 06

  Good suggestion.

• 9:07Jessie Ware?

What are you gonna serve him? Is there gonna be?

• 9:10Speaker 06

We're serving him tea. He's there, he's there in the afternoon, like at three, three thirty.

• 9:16Jessie Ware?

What, like a traditional afternoon tea?

• 9:17Speaker 06

And so it's before dinner, right, traditional afternoon tea.

• 9:20Jessie Ware?

  Do you like that?

• 9:21Speaker 06

I do, yes, I do. And I, I like the, the setting of the tea and sort of the relaxation of the moment in addition to the tea itself.

• 9:34Jessie Ware?

You're gonna have to let us, let us know if he's got good table manners.

• 9:37Speaker 06

  Yes.

• 9:37Jessie Ware?

  Are you a tea drinker?

• 9:40Speaker 06

I drink some tea. I drink coffee more than tea.

• 9:43Jessie Ware?

And I think your coffee is probably like rude. I'm gonna let you like do it.

• 9:47Speaker 05

I hope it's okay. It's one of your brother's coffees.

• 9:49Jessie Ware?

Oh, well, then it's gonna be strong.

• 9:51Speaker 05

  It might be strong.

• 9:53Jessie Ware?

So, so Tim, can we start at the beginning?

• 9:55Speaker 06

  Yes.

• 9:56Jessie Ware?

  Grew up in Alabama.

• 9:57Speaker 06

  That's right.

• 9:58Jessie Ware?

Who was around the dinner table and what is a very memorable dish from your childhood?

• 10:02Speaker 06

  Very family oriented.

• 10:04Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 10:05Speaker 06

Very family oriented, and it depends on what time of the day as to who would be there. My father worked the second shift.

• 10:13Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 10:14Speaker 06

So he was never there in the evening. And so in the evening, it would be my mom and my two brothers and myself. So I was, I'm a middle child.

• 10:24Jessie Ware?

How is that for you, Tim?

• 10:26Speaker 06

  Um.

• 10:26Jessie Ware?

Jessie is. My middle child is. I'm a middle child and I feel incredibly well adjusted. My son at the moment is, everyone's going, well, it's because he's a middle child. And I'm like, hang on, I didn't understand this. Have you ever been prescribed the middle child syndrome?

• 10:41Speaker 06

I'm not sure I know what the middle child syndrome is.

• 10:44Jessie Ware?

Really tricky. You're not tricky. Well, compared to my sister and my brother, I'm a breeze, thank you.

• 10:51Speaker 06

I think I was a little bit different.

• 10:56Jessie Ware?

  In what way?

• 10:57Speaker 06

Uh, different in most ways, different uh from a what I wanted out of life maybe. Different in in probably many different ways. Uh, I I put all of myself into school. And my brothers did less so of that.

• 11:18Jessie Ware?

Which university did you go to?

• 11:20Speaker 06

I went to Auburn University for undergrad and then I went to Duke University for graduate. And.

• 11:26Jessie Ware?

  And what did you do?

• 11:28Speaker 06

I was in engineering in undergrad.

• 11:30Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 11:31Speaker 06

And then in for grad school, I went, I did an MBA. And grad school, I was working during the day and going to school at night because it's the only way I could afford it to go to Duke. Was to have my employer basically pay for it. And it was a fabulous time. It was a fabulous time. All my life has been a fabulous time.

• 11:54Jessie Ware?

Was this when you were flipping burgers?

• 11:56Speaker 06

I started flipping burgers in when I was probably fourteen, fifteen. I I was first throwing papers.

• 12:06Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 12:06Speaker 06

And then I graduated to flipping burgers.

• 12:10Jessie Ware?

  And where did you work?

• 12:11Speaker 06

I worked, um, when I flipped burgers, I worked at a place called Tasty Freeze.

• 12:16Jessie Ware?

  Was it tasty?

• 12:17Speaker 06

  Uh, no.

• 12:20Speaker 06

But it was the only fast food kind of place in town. And so everybody kind of congregated there.

• 12:28Jessie Ware?

Was it a bit like, I can imagine, like Back to the Future? It was like the diner in Back to the Future where like they'd all hang out and it was like the spot.

• 12:36Speaker 06

Very much so, you know, they served ice cream and they served burgers.

• 12:40Speaker 05

And do your friend, did your friends come in?

• 12:42Speaker 06

They would come in, yes. And um generally make fun of me that I was working at the burger place.

• 12:48Speaker 05

Did you have to wear a little hat and things?

• 12:49Speaker 06

  I wore a little hat.

• 12:51Speaker 05

  Oh, how sweet.

• 12:52Speaker 06

And I wore an apron and uh it was, uh, I was making a dollar ten an hour at the time. It was sub minimum wage, uh, which was legal at that point in time and uh.

• 13:06Jessie Ware?

And you were fourteen. I don't know if fourteen year olds would be allowed behind a grill now, right?

• 13:10Speaker 06

I think not. I think not. But then, you know, my, my upbringing was, a lot of it was centered on work. And the belief that hard work was essential for everybody regardless of your age. And so I started working when I was probably eleven or twelve on the paper route.

• 13:33Speaker 05

What did your dad and mum do then?

• 13:35Speaker 06

My father uh was in the shipbuilding business.

• 13:39Speaker 05

  In Alabama?

• 13:40Speaker 06

  In Alabama, there was a.

• 13:42Speaker 05

  They made ships?

• 13:43Speaker 06

There was a dry dock in Mobile, Alabama. And uh he was in the shipbuilding business. And my mom, when we were younger, uh, stayed at home and, and took care of everyone. And then after a while, uh, she began working at the local pharmacy as a clerk, a sales clerk. And um, so I, I came from a very modest, extremely modest background. And in a rural town. And if the town had two, three thousand people in it, so it was a blink your eye, you'll miss it kind of place. Uh, but it was terrific. You know, it was, uh, the, the house was filled with love.

• 14:27Speaker 06

And the, everybody knew everybody in town and what everybody was doing and so it was a very different upbringing.

• 14:36Jessie Ware?

  What was Christmas like in?

• 14:38Speaker 06

  Oh, Christmas was so huge.

• 14:40Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 14:40Speaker 06

It was so huge and we had the family would congregate at Christmas Eve, that was our key time and everybody pigged out and it was a very enjoyable time.

• 14:54Jessie Ware?

What, um, so you said your dad was doing the second shift.

• 14:58Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 14:58Jessie Ware?

So around the dinner table, it would have been your two brothers and you and your mum.

• 15:01Speaker 06

  That's right.

• 15:02Jessie Ware?

And what would have, what was your favorite go to meal that your mum would make for you boys?

• 15:06Speaker 06

Oh, it would, it would have to be fried chicken. Everything in the south was pretty fried.

• 15:13Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 15:14Speaker 06

Right, you fried chicken, you fried shrimp, you fried fish, everything was fried.

• 15:19Jessie Ware?

  And strangely, you're still alive.

• 15:21Speaker 06

And I'm still alive. Okra was fried and so most everything.

• 15:27Jessie Ware?

So is it put in a batter?

• 15:29Speaker 06

It's put in a batter, yes. And sometimes deep fried and sometimes fried more on the.

• 15:37Jessie Ware?

  Shallow.

• 15:37Speaker 06

  The shallow.

• 15:38Jessie Ware?

Do you still eat fried food?

• 15:40Speaker 06

I, I do because it brings me back to my childhood. Uh, I know that sounds maybe kind of strange, but it's one of those things like, like music is.

• 15:50Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 15:51Speaker 06

You know, you hear a song that you grew up with and it, it ports you back to your childhood. Food does that for me as well. And so I, but I don't eat it nearly as much as I did, you know, I, I couldn't do that at this point in time.

• 16:06Jessie Ware?

I, I hear that you, you start your day around, you wake up, you've got quite a.

• 16:11Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 16:11Jessie Ware?

Um, not a strict, but it's.

• 16:13Speaker 06

  It's pretty disciplined.

• 16:14Jessie Ware?

Disciplined, you wake up at, is it five?

• 16:16Speaker 06

  Yes.

• 16:16Jessie Ware?

  Do emails?

• 16:17Speaker 06

Probably a little earlier than that.

• 16:19Speaker 05

  Why is that?

• 16:23Speaker 06

Well, as it turns out, it's the part of the day that I can control the most. As the day starts to unfold, it becomes less predictable.

• 16:33Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 16:34Speaker 06

And by the end of the day, all these things can happen to to commandeer your time and attention and energy. And so I love the part of the day that I can kind of block out the world and focus on a few critical things and and just be silent for a while. And it's a

• 16:56Speaker 05

So do you do some work at home?

• 16:58Speaker 06

  I do.

• 16:59Speaker 05

  Get going, yeah.

• 16:59Speaker 06

I do. When I when I get up in the morning, I typically grab coffee and some cereal.

• 17:07Jessie Ware?

What cereal is Tim Cook eating? What is it? We need to know all these details.

• 17:12Speaker 06

  Cereal is like cashew.

• 17:14Speaker 05

  Oh, cashew.

• 17:15Speaker 06

  If you're familiar with this.

• 17:16Speaker 05

It's nice you bite. It's a bit like bran. It's a bit like nuts, ground nuts.

• 17:20Speaker 06

  Yes, that's right. And it's a protein-based cereal.

• 17:24Jessie Ware?

  Like a granola?

• 17:25Speaker 05

  No.

• 17:26Speaker 06

  No, it's not a granola.

• 17:28Speaker 05

They sell it in Whole Foods.

• 17:29Speaker 06

  In the market.

• 17:29Speaker 05

  I bought it, yeah.

• 17:30Speaker 06

Yeah, they'll sell it in the market.

• 17:31Jessie Ware?

What what milk are you going with?

• 17:33Speaker 06

  I do unsweetened almond milk.

• 17:36Jessie Ware?

Apparently very good, actually the best for you.

• 17:38Speaker 06

  It's very good for me.

• 17:40Jessie Ware?

  Yes.

• 17:40Speaker 06

  It's very good for me.

• 17:41Jessie Ware?

Hard to find unsweetened stuff in America, though. I mean, like, it's kind of, everything's got something delicious and sweet in it.

• 17:48Speaker 06

California is a little different. It's a little more available there. But you're right. Of course, my childhood, everything was sweet. The tea was sweet. Everything that you had had sugar in it.

• 18:01Jessie Ware?

And then, so you have your cereal, and then you work, you do your emails.

• 18:05Speaker 06

And then I'm doing emails. And generally, what I'm focused on in the morning is responding to employees and customers.

• 18:13Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 18:14Speaker 06

And so I get an extraordinary amount of outreach from customers. And they're they're telling me things that are critical in their lives. Maybe they're telling me a story of how the Apple Watch saved their life.

• 18:29Jessie Ware?

Oh, come on, tell, come on, tell us.

• 18:31Speaker 06

This is an unbelievable, these are unbelievable stories where somebody's wearing the watch and they get an alert that they have AFib. Because the watch can detect AFib.

• 18:43Jessie Ware?

  You're kidding.

• 18:44Speaker 06

And they they go run to the to the emergency room and and get fitted with all of the EKG kind of stuff and it confirms the diagnosis. And it turns out in many cases, they tell me that the doctor, the cardiologist told them they would have died had they not come in at that point in time.

• 19:06Jessie Ware?

  Wow.

• 19:06Speaker 05

Okay. Have you ever had a medical alert on your watch?

• 19:10Speaker 06

I haven't, but my father, um, when he was alive, he fell in the house and he was living alone. And the other thing the watch does is send you, send a notification to your family and to emergency services if you fall.

• 19:27Speaker 05

Oh, this is what I need.

• 19:29Jessie Ware?

This is what my worries about being somebody that lives on the right.

• 19:31Speaker 05

I live on my own and I'm always scared if I fall over that that my toes will be growing hairs before they find me.

• 19:38Jessie Ware?

I mean, Tim, we speak about 10 times a day, but is that because he could then contact you on the phone?

• 19:43Speaker 05

  No, it alerted them.

• 19:44Speaker 06

  It did it automatically.

• 19:46Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 19:46Jessie Ware?

How could it do that? I don't understand.

• 19:48Speaker 06

Because it it detects the fall because of the accelerometer in the in the watch. And so it detects the fall, it's it notifies emergency services. And it notifies your emergency contacts. So it does both. And in this case, it notified emergency services and they came out to the house, he didn't respond to the door, and so they kicked the door down.

• 20:13Jessie Ware?

  And found him.

• 20:14Speaker 06

And it was a good thing they did because he was not conscious at the time.

• 20:17Jessie Ware?

Oh, my goodness, I'm so sorry.

• 20:19Speaker 06

And and and he came out of that.

• 20:22Jessie Ware?

But did he then, when he came out of it, go, well, my son. Yeah. My son actually saved my life with this watch.

• 20:29Speaker 06

No, he was focused on the door, to be honest.

• 20:31Speaker 05

  He was more upset someone.

• 20:33Speaker 06

  They kicked out my door.

• 20:33Speaker 05

Yeah, I would be that. Well, you wouldn't pick up the phone anyway.

• 20:37Jessie Ware?

  Oh, piss off, I would.

• 20:38Speaker 05

You always have it on silence, so she wouldn't pick up the phone even.

• 20:41Speaker 06

  Oh, really?

• 20:42Jessie Ware?

I I'm seeing you've got your Apple Watch on and it did have a few notifications coming up, but like, do you sometimes, I mean, do you sometimes not want the notifications? You just want it to be a watch?

• 20:51Speaker 06

Yes, and I silence it. Like at night, if I'm sleeping with a watch, I'll silence the notifications. Um. Because at night now, the watch detects sleep apnea. You know, a lot of people have sleep apnea but don't know it. And so a billion people, over a billion people have sleep apnea around the world and don't know it. And so it's just amazing the kinds of things that are detectable from your wrist now. And um, we just keep pulling the string and putting putting more and more sensors and so forth in the watch for it to help people.

• 21:29Jessie Ware?

Um. Back to your childhood, you were flipping burgers at Tasty Freeze.

• 21:33Speaker 06

  Yes.

• 21:34Jessie Ware?

Um. Can you still make a good burger? When was the last time you made a burger?

• 21:39Speaker 06

It's been a long time, to be honest.

• 21:40Jessie Ware?

  Do you cook?

• 21:41Speaker 06

  I don't cook.

• 21:43Jessie Ware?

Is it because Cafe Max is so good on Apple?

• 21:46Speaker 06

Cafe Max is so incredible. I have lunch in Cafe Max. And uh, I take a dinner home from Cafe Max during the week.

• 21:57Jessie Ware?

It's your business, so I think that's all right.

• 21:59Speaker 06

  And so uh.

• 22:01Jessie Ware?

Do you curate the menu at all?

• 22:03Speaker 06

I don't curate the menu because I found that the curation of it is so great. And that I don't need to curate the menu in order for it to be great.

• 22:12Jessie Ware?

So do you have like Fish and Chip Friday, like we do in in England?

• 22:17Speaker 06

On Fridays, as it turns out, we generally don't go into the office.

• 22:22Jessie Ware?

  Oh, okay.

• 22:22Speaker 06

Because we're on this three, two kind of schedule, although I I go into the office four days a week.

• 22:30Jessie Ware?

  Right.

• 22:30Speaker 06

And then on Friday, I typically work from home because nobody's in the office and it's depressing when there's nobody there.

• 22:37Jessie Ware?

Yeah. Did you find that, did you change this after Covid? Did it kind of change the way you were?

• 22:42Speaker 06

  Covid changed.

• 22:43Jessie Ware?

  Right.

• 22:44Speaker 06

Covid changed things in a major way. And uh, it taught us that we could get some amount of work done. Uh, online, but it also taught us of the value of all being together.

• 22:58Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, for collaboration.

• 22:59Speaker 06

So we've tried to to find the hi- a hybrid approach that works.

• 23:04Jessie Ware?

So if we were coming to Cafe Max, which is at Apple Park, what would you be like? I really, Jessie and Lenny, I really want you to try this. Like, what would be your favorite dish from Cafe Max at the moment?

• 23:17Speaker 06

Oh, um, I I typically go for the fish.

• 23:21Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 23:22Speaker 06

And the fish changes uh in terms of what they're offering and there's actually, we have so many employees from different parts of the world there. There's food from all around the world there. Lots of Chinese food, lots of Indian food, uh, there's a sushi bar, there are burgers. Uh, there's pizza, there are salads, there are soups. I mean, you name it and Cafe Max kind of has it.

• 23:51Jessie Ware?

  I'd love to go.

• 23:52Speaker 06

  Oh, you're you're invited.

• 23:54Jessie Ware?

  Thank you.

• 23:54Speaker 06

You're definitely invited. I think you'd enjoy it.

• 23:56Jessie Ware?

So, do you, I I presume you live quite near to Apple Park?

• 24:01Speaker 06

I live in Palo Alto, which is about twenty minutes or so from Apple Park.

• 24:06Jessie Ware?

And where are you, where, um, do you, do you go, because I mean, San Francisco has some really great places to eat. I'm sure Palo has, Palo Alto does as well, but where, if you're in San Francisco, where?

• 24:17Speaker 06

Well, I usually go out to dinner in Palo Alto.

• 24:20Jessie Ware?

Okay, are there any spots that we should go to?

• 24:22Speaker 06

  Yeah, there's um, there's a place called Ethel's Fancy.

• 24:26Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 24:26Speaker 06

That is a really cool eclectic kind of place that you generally have shareables with. So whoever you're eating with, you need to have some things in common with, or at least uh, eat with somebody that likes to explore new, new foods. And they have things from all over the, all over the world there.

• 24:50Jessie Ware?

And what, what would you say if I was going there, what would be the dish that I should definitely try?

• 24:55Speaker 06

Oh, which one would I say?

• 24:58Jessie Ware?

  Do you always get?

• 24:59Speaker 06

  I like the octopus there.

• 25:02Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 25:03Speaker 06

It's quite good. And I usually also, you know, I'm in this fish sort of, I usually get the fish for an entree. But they also have an interesting beef there as well, if you're into more red meat.

• 25:19Jessie Ware?

We hear that you've got quite a sweet tooth, though.

• 25:22Speaker 06

  I do.

• 25:22Jessie Ware?

  You like chocolate.

• 25:23Speaker 06

  I do, I love chocolate.

• 25:24Jessie Ware?

This was the thing that we heard, we heard you like fish and you really like chocolate.

• 25:28Speaker 06

  Yes.

• 25:28Jessie Ware?

So this is what you're getting.

• 25:30Speaker 06

  Oh, really?

• 25:31Speaker 05

So I made ketri, have you had that before?

• 25:34Speaker 06

  I don't think I've heard of it.

• 25:36Jessie Ware?

Wow. Is it a British thing?

• 25:38Speaker 05

  Scottish, I think.

• 25:40Speaker 06

  Okay.

• 25:40Speaker 05

It's a mixture of fish with rice and kind of spices.

• 25:46Jessie Ware?

  Not spicy, though, not spicy.

• 25:48Speaker 06

  Oh, it sounds right.

• 25:50Jessie Ware?

  Cinnamon, it help yourself.

• 25:52Speaker 06

  Sounds wonderful.

• 25:53Jessie Ware?

And you have it with, it's quite something, people, lots of people do it traditionally around Christmas time as well and like Boxing Day, it's like, I don't know, hence the smell of Haddock in the room right now, I mean, it's quite strong, but, and the yellowness comes from the turmeric and so.

• 26:09Speaker 05

It can help yourself, so that you.

• 26:12Jessie Ware?

Um, so, Tim, we ask everybody what their last supper would be. I guess this would be if you're going away from Apple Park for a very long time and you're not having all your creature comforts. And what would be your appetizer, your entree, as you call, yeah, yeah, your main, your entree, and your dessert and drink of choice?

• 26:34Speaker 06

Oh, I'd probably go for like a hamachi crudo for the appetizer with jalapeno.

• 26:42Jessie Ware?

  Delicious.

• 26:43Speaker 06

Those are, it's quite good. I'd probably for an entree, I'd probably go for a really great branzino.

• 26:54Jessie Ware?

What are you having as your sides?

• 26:56Speaker 06

  Uh, probably maybe broccolini.

• 27:01Jessie Ware?

Quite garlicky, are we going garlicky?

• 27:03Speaker 06

I like garlic, yeah, I like garlic. Oh, thank you so much.

• 27:11Speaker 06

For dessert, uh, almost anything with chocolate in it. And

• 27:19Jessie Ware?

You don't discriminate, you'll have anything.

• 27:21Speaker 06

I'll have, I usually like dark more than milk.

• 27:24Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 27:25Speaker 06

Um, but, but I'll eat almost anything chocolate.

• 27:30Speaker 05

Do you want me to help you?

• 27:31Speaker 06

  Oh, yeah.

• 27:32Jessie Ware?

Can you agree that we do have better chocolate bars in the UK than America?

• 27:39Speaker 06

  I

• 27:41Jessie Ware?

  You're hesitating, Tim. You're hesitating.

• 27:44Speaker 06

  There's great chocolate here. Yeah.

• 27:47Jessie Ware?

Go on, well, what's your favorite? Because I just think, oh, I, I love a Hershey's Kiss, like, if I, for a moment, but I don't, I don't know. I feel like Cadbury's is far superior.

• 27:57Speaker 06

It's more, yeah. I like dark chocolate better than milk chocolate.

• 28:02Jessie Ware?

Me too. So maybe we're going, like

• 28:05Speaker 06

You know, like seventy percent or

• 28:07Jessie Ware?

But again, have you had green and blacks?

• 28:10Speaker 06

  I haven't, but I'll try it.

• 28:12Jessie Ware?

That's UK, isn't it? Green and blacks. I don't know why we're good at it, because it's not like we have cocoa. Like, I mean, it's like, doesn't make any sense. If you want some lemon and salt and pepper, it's just there. Help yourself.

• 28:24Speaker 05

  See what you think.

• 28:26Speaker 06

  Mmm.

• 28:27Speaker 05

  Do you like it?

• 28:28Speaker 06

  It's excellent.

• 28:29Jessie Ware?

And I guess would the drink of choice be the beautiful bottle of wine that you brought us over?

• 28:34Speaker 06

Definitely. It would be Kessler. It would be Kessler. I, I love that Chardonnay.

• 28:41Jessie Ware?

I can't wait to try it. It's my

• 28:42Speaker 06

You're gonna love it. Let me know what you think. Send me a note on it.

• 28:46Jessie Ware?

I, I, I will, I will email you and you will read it at four forty-five in the morning. And And I'll ask you where I can get the case.

• 30:29Jessie Ware?

So, Tim, what do you do when you're not working? I hear you work about a 14-hour day, and I believe you like hiking.

• 30:37Speaker 06

  Hmm, I love hiking.

• 30:39Jessie Ware?

And I guess Northern California is probably beautiful for that, right?

• 30:44Speaker 06

It is beautiful, and there's a lot of protected space there so you can really, kind of with a reasonable drive, go out somewhere and feel like you're way out.

• 30:58Speaker 06

But I find that hiking really clears my mind and connects me with nature again, which is so critical. And I found moving west that there's a lot more land available for hiking, and I've really just gotten into it more and more over the years.

• 31:22Jessie Ware?

Do you do it on your own, or do you go with people?

• 31:24Speaker 06

  Both.

• 31:25Jessie Ware?

If you're on your own... What music are you listening to and what snacks are you bringing?

• 31:30Speaker 06

I'm sometimes I'm listening to classic rock.

• 31:34Jessie Ware?

  Oh, yeah.

• 31:34Speaker 06

Uh, because I I love classic rock and it, you know, takes me back to childhood as well.

• 31:40Jessie Ware?

So like what kind of bands?

• 31:41Speaker 06

Oh, what what am I listening? Uh, Rolling Stones and.

• 31:45Jessie Ware?

  The Beatles or are you?

• 31:46Speaker 06

Bob Dylan and Steve was a Bob Dylan fan as well and and so, you know, he's an extraordinary, extraordinary talent.

• 31:57Speaker 05

  Were you close to Steve?

• 31:58Speaker 06

  Yes.

• 31:59Speaker 05

So did you work together before you took over the?

• 32:03Speaker 06

Oh, yeah, we I started working for Apple in ninety eight.

• 32:09Speaker 05

  Oh, a long time ago.

• 32:10Speaker 06

And uh, and so worked with Steve for thirteen years before he passed in uh, twenty eleven and uh, yeah, that was a very, very sad time.

• 32:24Speaker 05

  Terrible.

• 32:25Speaker 06

And um, I thought he would always be there and uh, that's not how things worked out.

• 32:33Jessie Ware?

Yeah, can I ask you, are there you you hike? Do you, I mean, because Apple's become everything, entertainment, health. Uh, do you almost not want to look at a screen at the end of the day, but if you are, what are you watching on Apple TV at the moment?

• 32:49Speaker 06

I like sometimes switching off and being just totally quiet. And then at at other times, I love the entertainment value of of TV plus.

• 33:00Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 33:01Speaker 06

And so I'm watching uh, Silo.

• 33:04Speaker 05

Oh, yeah, I haven't watched that yet.

• 33:06Speaker 06

Oh, I would highly recommend it.

• 33:07Speaker 05

  What's it about?

• 33:08Speaker 06

It has sort of a sci fi angle, but it's you don't have to be a sci fi fan to love this. Uh, Rebecca Ferguson stars in it.

• 33:17Speaker 05

  She's great.

• 33:18Speaker 06

And it's being filmed in the UK.

• 33:20Speaker 05

  Oh, really?

• 33:21Speaker 06

I was just on set on Tuesday.

• 33:23Jessie Ware?

  Did you enjoy that?

• 33:24Speaker 06

Oh, it was unbelievable. It was really unbelievable. It's an extraordinary show. So I watched that um.

• 33:32Speaker 05

You've got to promise there's going to be eighteen thousand series of Slow Horses.

• 33:37Speaker 06

Slow Horses is huge and uh.

• 33:39Speaker 05

  We adore it.

• 33:41Jessie Ware?

But I think it's dependent on how many books there are. Thirteen books. He wrote thirteen books.

• 33:45Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 33:46Speaker 06

Yeah, people love Slow Horses and Bad Sisters.

• 33:50Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 33:50Jessie Ware?

We had Sharon on actually last week.

• 33:53Speaker 06

  Oh, really?

• 33:54Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 33:54Speaker 06

  Oh, wow.

• 33:55Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 33:55Speaker 06

Wow. And we're filming F1 partially in the UK. Uh, F1 is the new movie about Formula One.

• 34:05Jessie Ware?

Is that the one with Brad Pitt?

• 34:06Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 34:06Jessie Ware?

Oh, yeah. And they they've just been filming in Abu Dhabi, haven't they?

• 34:09Speaker 06

  Abu Dhabi as well.

• 34:10Jessie Ware?

  And did you go?

• 34:10Speaker 06

  I was there.

• 34:11Jessie Ware?

  How was that?

• 34:12Speaker 06

Oh, it's it's incredibly exciting and you know, F1 as a sport has really just taken off around the world.

• 34:21Speaker 05

  Mm hmm.

• 34:21Speaker 06

And it's going from strength to strength. And it's so exciting meeting the characters behind it.

• 34:27Speaker 05

It's always been quite European, hasn't it?

• 34:30Speaker 06

  Yes, but it is becoming.

• 34:32Speaker 05

I quite like it, I have to say.

• 34:34Speaker 06

  It's becoming global.

• 34:35Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 34:36Speaker 06

And so I think the movie is going to just be fantastic.

• 34:39Speaker 05

Good, because it's always been NASCAR in the States, hasn't it?

• 34:43Speaker 06

  It has been, you're right.

• 34:44Speaker 05

  So Formula One is, yeah.

• 34:46Speaker 06

  It's it's fairly new.

• 34:47Speaker 05

But it's so glamorous, Formula One, and they're so glamorous, the drivers and everything.

• 34:52Speaker 06

  That's right.

• 34:53Jessie Ware?

But isn't it, I'm sorry, uh, isn't it just they whiz past you and then you just have to wait? I mean, I can't imagine it's that exciting to watch, is it?

• 35:01Speaker 05

  It is clever.

• 35:02Jessie Ware?

  They go fast.

• 35:03Speaker 05

Jesse, because of the driving. The driving is so clever.

• 35:07Speaker 06

It's so clever, it's so, if you're into engineering.

• 35:11Speaker 05

  It's a team as well.

• 35:12Jessie Ware?

  Okay, yeah.

• 35:12Speaker 06

Right, the data and the technical side of Formula One is just huge. And so when you're down in the garage, watching how the team works, watching when a car comes into the garage and goes out in two seconds.

• 35:28Speaker 05

Yeah, they change the tyres in nine seconds or something, yeah.

• 35:31Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 35:32Jessie Ware?

Speaking about data, you're obviously obsessed by it. What was the first kind of bit of gear that really opened your eyes to data? I mean, you've been working within computing for a long time.

• 35:44Speaker 06

I I would say back in college, my. My first time using a personal computer, the light bulb went off about all of this power that you could have at your fingertips. And before that, I was working more with a mainframe and you would do punch punch cards. It's um, think of it as one big central computer that everybody uses. And you access it through these punch cards to run your program.

• 36:15Speaker 05

  Oh, my goodness.

• 36:16Speaker 06

And you would submit your punch cards once a day and hope that your program would run. And inevitably, it would not run sometimes and you would be back again the next day to try to get it to run. With a personal computer, you could do everything yourself.

• 36:31Speaker 05

What was your first computer? Was it Apple?

• 36:33Speaker 06

  It was an Apple.

• 36:34Speaker 05

  Oh.

• 36:34Speaker 06

  Yes.

• 36:35Jessie Ware?

I remember my friend having an Apple and it looking like the sex, it looked like it was futuristic.

• 36:42Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 36:42Jessie Ware?

It was kind of ra- and it looked very exciting.

• 36:45Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 36:46Speaker 06

  Yes.

• 36:46Speaker 05

  Tim, look, in case you.

• 36:48Speaker 06

  Oh, my goodness.

• 36:49Speaker 05

Have you finished with your Kedry?

• 36:51Speaker 06

  Yes.

• 36:52Jessie Ware?

  So this is.

• 36:52Speaker 06

  It is terrific. Thank you.

• 36:54Jessie Ware?

My, my three year old helped make this yesterday and it is a lot of chocolate. It's dark and milk. It's salted peanuts. It's honeycomb.

• 37:03Speaker 05

Did you manage to get the coffee out of that?

• 37:05Speaker 06

I did get some coffee. Thank you.

• 37:07Speaker 05

  Do you need any more?

• 37:08Speaker 06

  I think I'm good.

• 37:09Speaker 05

Okay. Do you want a coffee?

• 37:10Jessie Ware?

And speaking about Alabama and southern hospitality, was that very important to your family?

• 37:17Speaker 06

  It was embedded.

• 37:19Jessie Ware?

  Yes, right.

• 37:20Speaker 06

It was really embedded and you were expected to treat everyone with dignity and respect. And be friends with everyone and uh, and treat everyone as a guest. And you know, that is just a part of being from the south.

• 37:41Jessie Ware?

Some of the kind of southern table manners, are there any that we should know about?

• 37:45Speaker 06

  That's a good question. Um.

• 37:49Speaker 06

Southern table manners. No, I mean, we eat with our hands because we are eating things like fried chicken and and so forth. And and so there's probably less emphasis on traditional table manners and more about the the

• 38:11Speaker 05

  Enjoyment.

• 38:11Speaker 06

Enjoyment and the enjoying the company that you're with.

• 38:16Speaker 05

What do your brothers do? Do they do anything within tech?

• 38:20Speaker 06

Not in tech at all. Uh, my older brother's now retired, but sort of followed in my father's footsteps of being in the shipbuilding kind of industry. And my younger brother is a financial analyst.

• 38:38Speaker 05

  Oh, wow.

• 38:39Speaker 06

And, uh, yeah, so they stayed out of tech totally.

• 38:42Speaker 05

Tim, do you think you'll ever retire?

• 38:45Speaker 06

  Sure.

• 38:45Speaker 05

I I talk to someone who's never retired.

• 38:48Speaker 06

But not the traditional definition of it.

• 38:51Speaker 05

  What's that mean?

• 38:52Speaker 06

Uh, meaning I don't see being at home doing nothing and not intellectually stimulated and and and thinking about how tomorrow can be better than today. And I think I'll always be wired in that kind of way and and want to work. I mean, I was working when I was 11 or 12 and

• 39:16Speaker 05

I can't imagine retiring. Yeah. Because I'm essentially lazy and I would do nothing all day. I'd do word games and crosswords and read and not do anything else, I think. That's why I need to

• 39:29Jessie Ware?

You're kind of allowed to do that at a certain age, too.

• 39:31Speaker 05

  But I don't want to.

• 39:31Jessie Ware?

  Okay, fair enough.

• 39:32Speaker 05

  I need the stimulation also.

• 39:34Speaker 06

Yeah, I I I feel the same way is you want to be pushed

• 39:39Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 39:39Speaker 06

a bit. You want to be uncomfortable

• 39:42Speaker 05

  Yeah, a little bit, yeah.

• 39:43Speaker 06

And, um, maybe not as much as today.

• 39:47Speaker 05

  Maybe not.

• 39:48Speaker 06

But, um, but you want to be pushed.

• 39:50Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 39:50Speaker 06

And I I think I'll always want to be pushed.

• 39:53Speaker 05

Where do you go on holiday?

• 39:55Speaker 06

I usually go to national parks.

• 39:58Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 39:59Speaker 06

  And

• 40:00Speaker 05

You stay in the U.S.? You don't?

• 40:02Speaker 06

I a combination. This this, um, summer, I went to Slovenia for the first time.

• 40:08Speaker 05

  Oh, what was that like?

• 40:09Speaker 06

It was incredible because I went caving and I'd never been caving before.

• 40:14Speaker 05

What do you do when you're caving?

• 40:15Speaker 06

Well, you're going down Many meters below ground.

• 40:21Jessie Ware?

  Oh, Jesus.

• 40:22Speaker 06

  And you're wearing lights.

• 40:25Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 40:25Speaker 06

And you're kind of exploring the underground. And it's, it's like a different world down there. And I'd never done it before. I knew nothing about it. But it was a great exploration because I've always been above ground.

• 40:42Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 40:42Speaker 06

And, you know, hiking above ground and going up mountains and so forth. And so going down is very different.

• 40:49Jessie Ware?

Sounds quite dangerous or not? Is it kind of?

• 40:51Speaker 06

  Well, I had a guide.

• 40:53Jessie Ware?

  Yes.

• 40:53Speaker 06

That really understood the surroundings and, and, you know.

• 40:58Jessie Ware?

But do you like that level of thrill?

• 41:01Speaker 06

  I do.

• 41:01Jessie Ware?

Even when you're having your time off and you're in a hiking?

• 41:05Speaker 06

  Yes.

• 41:05Jessie Ware?

Are you hiking the highest mountain there? Are you jumping over a rock that maybe?

• 41:09Speaker 06

Well, my nephew likes to hike the highest mountain.

• 41:13Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 41:13Speaker 06

And so he pushes to do that. I, I can, I'll sometimes do that. And then sometimes I'll just want to hike a long distance to wear myself out totally. And so it's a combination of those two things, but it's all about the summit. And the, the feeling that you have when you accomplish a, a long hike to a summit and then look at the beauty of surroundings that you have. And there's nothing quite like that.

• 41:46Jessie Ware?

I think I've been moaning all the way up. I'm not. I remember I did Machu Picchu and we got to the top and they were like, look around. I was like, I, I can't, I need hair.

• 41:56Speaker 06

That's on my bucket list. I've never done that.

• 41:58Jessie Ware?

It was amazing. It seems like, Tim, you kind of, you, you're striving, you're always striving for a greater tomorrow. You push your lim, limits in everything, whether it's like.

• 42:09Speaker 06

I try to. I, because I think it's amazing what you can accomplish if you push yourself.

• 42:14Jessie Ware?

Did your mum and dad instill this in you then, do you think?

• 42:17Speaker 06

They instilled hard work. And that has stayed with me for a lifetime. Is the value of it, the fact that work can be a part of your purpose. And what Apple provided me was next level because.

• 42:38Speaker 06

Apple is at the root about enriching other people's lives. You know, whether it's through some of the health stuff that we talked about, or empowering them to create things that they couldn't create with the iPhone camera, or the drawing on iPad, or so forth. You know, really focusing on the creative communities. And so, Apple had this nice intersection between, it was clearly hard and challenging in a dynamic environment, but it was also focused on doing good, and leaving the world better than we found it.

• 43:16Speaker 06

And, and, and having that intersection with your work means everything. You know, because you're, you're no longer just working for work's sake. I think I, before Apple, I think I loved to work. I didn't love the work. And now, I love both. And there's a big difference that you feel when you, when you do that.

• 43:45Speaker 05

Have you got something new that's coming up that you?

• 43:48Speaker 06

Oh, we have so many things coming up. I can't give you a hint.

• 43:52Speaker 05

Oh, you must be able to give us a tiny little hint of something.

• 43:56Speaker 06

So many things. You know, whether you're looking at products and the product pipeline, or whether you're looking at shows and different TV shows that are coming out, or movies, or services. It's a very exciting time to, to be at Apple. And Apple Intelligence, that we just dropped yesterday in the, in the UK, it's already helping so many people.

• 44:23Speaker 05

Can you explain it to us?

• 44:25Speaker 06

Yeah, it, what it really does is it brings generative AI to your iPhone, your iPad, and your Mac. And what that, what that really means to most people would be things like, if you're, if you're receiving like as many emails as I do, you want to get through them as fast as you can. And so, it will summarize your emails for you. It will, when you reply, it will help you reply by by suggesting a smart reply.

• 45:01Jessie Ware?

  Right.

• 45:01Speaker 06

It will help you if you write and you wanna make something friendlier or more professional. It'll do that for you. So you may wanna write it and and get it to rewrite it.

• 45:12Jessie Ware?

So it's a kind of chat G P. Are we allowed to say that? I don't know. Is it kind of a version of it's like?

• 45:17Speaker 06

Well, we're actually integrating chat G P T where if you want world knowledge, Siri now accesses chat G P T. Uh, it does things like, uh, if you wanna do just fun things like create your custom emoji. It'll cr- it'll create a custom emoji for you.

• 45:35Jessie Ware?

Have you got a custom emoji?

• 45:37Speaker 06

I I was working on one yesterday.

• 45:39Jessie Ware?

Can we see it in the works?

• 45:41Speaker 06

  I love, um, Christmas.

• 45:44Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 45:44Speaker 06

I love Christmas and London is like the ultimate Christmas city. And so I was looking at, uh, what would Big Ben look like with a tree out front? And and so you can do things like this and it's it's just. It's both fun like that, but it's also serious, like the writing tools.

• 46:10Jessie Ware?

  Uh. It's clever.

• 46:12Speaker 06

And very clever. And so and it's integrated into all the apps that you already use. Whether it's mail or messages or notes or.

• 46:22Jessie Ware?

  God.

• 46:22Speaker 06

  Wherever you want it.

• 46:23Jessie Ware?

Apple phone knows more about me than myself.

• 46:26Speaker 06

  It probably does.

• 46:28Jessie Ware?

Yeah. Is there a danger in that? That will you be at that point where you go, you know what? Shut it all down because they know too much now, the.

• 46:37Speaker 06

No, well, well, they, in this case, what we do is we do as much on the device as possible. So it's not Apple.

• 46:46Jessie Ware?

  Yes.

• 46:46Speaker 06

  It's your device.

• 46:48Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 46:48Speaker 06

And we don't have access to your device.

• 46:50Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 46:51Speaker 06

You you have a passcode and that passcode encrypts your data on that phone and we can't open it.

• 46:58Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 46:58Speaker 06

And we don't wanna open it anyway, but, uh, we're we're not in the data business. We're we're about privacy. And so and what we've tried to do with our Apple Intelligence is find the intersection of personal but private.

• 47:16Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 47:17Speaker 06

And that's the intersection that we're at.

• 47:19Speaker 05

Can I just ask, how many emails do you think you get a day?

• 47:23Speaker 06

Oh, it's um, in all in, probably five, six hundred.

• 47:28Speaker 05

  Oh, cruel.

• 47:29Speaker 06

Yeah. In some, in some days where there's something extraordinary going on, it will be a lot more than that.

• 47:38Speaker 05

  And you answer them all?

• 47:39Speaker 06

No, I don't answer them all.

• 47:41Speaker 05

Well, your Apple intelligence will be sorting them out soon. Telling you, telling you which ones need to be.

• 47:47Speaker 06

It also does that, it prioritizes the email for you.

• 47:50Speaker 05

  My goodness, that's, yeah.

• 47:52Jessie Ware?

Um, we're recording this in the run up to Christmas. Is it just expected that Uncle Tim is getting his nephew something from Apple? Or is it like, Tim, Uncle do a bit better than that, I'm sorry, I'm sorry.

• 48:06Speaker 06

He gets stuff from uh, from me throughout the year. He just got, he just got a new Mac.

• 48:13Jessie Ware?

  Oh, right, okay.

• 48:13Speaker 06

And, and so, yeah, I do a lot of Apple product for the holidays.

• 48:18Jessie Ware?

It's not too bad, is it?

• 48:19Speaker 06

It's not too bad at all.

• 48:20Jessie Ware?

Good on, good on Tim Cook's Christmas list.

• 48:23Speaker 06

  Not too bad at all.

• 48:25Jessie Ware?

Uh, Tim, before we let you go and go meet the king and queen, as you do, um, can we um, ask you what are not, well, I, I, I kind of think you've already answered this, but maybe you can elaborate, you, you, you talk about the connection between food and nostalgia and memory. Is, is there another taste or, or scent that can transport you somewhere?

• 48:48Speaker 06

It would be about fried food. Uh, it would be this combination of fried chicken and the scent off of that, the fried shrimp, fried okra. Uh, all of these things are southern delicacies and I can still, you can kind of still smell those in my mom's kitchen. And uh, yeah, it definitely ports me back to a different day and time.

• 49:19Jessie Ware?

Tim, thank you so much for coming on the podcast. Thank you for your time, thank you for the presence. Thank you for being so open.

• 49:25Speaker 06

  Thank you for having me.

• 49:26Jessie Ware?

  Oh, it's my pleasure.

• 49:42Jessie Ware?

Tim Cook, what a lovely guest. I'm so excited about drinking this Chardonnay, ma.

• 49:48Speaker 05

  I know you are, darling.

• 49:49Jessie Ware?

  I'm really excited.

• 49:50Speaker 05

I'll save mine for Christmas Day and you can have yours at home with Sam tonight.

• 49:55Jessie Ware?

Okay, great. So I get both bottles, essentially.

• 49:57Speaker 05

  Essentially.

• 49:58Jessie Ware?

Perfect. Love that. That's selfless. And thank you so much to Tim Cook for taking the time to come over.

• 50:03Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 50:03Jessie Ware?

  Lovely man.

• 50:04Speaker 05

We're sandwiched in between the Prime Minister and the King and Queen.

• 50:08Jessie Ware?

As it should be, honey. He was really...

• 50:11Speaker 05

  A lovely, nice...

• 50:12Jessie Ware?

Kind of unassuming, humble man that is basically one of...

• 50:16Speaker 05

Who likes hard work, I would say.

• 50:18Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 50:19Speaker 05

It's like the hardest working person I've ever met.

• 50:22Jessie Ware?

But thank you so much. I really enjoyed that.

• 50:24Speaker 05

It was a real pleasure, wasn't it?

• 50:26Jessie Ware?

Absolutely. Lovely man. And we'll see you next week.

• 50:30Speaker 05

  Yeah.
