• 1:39Jessie Ware?

Hello and welcome to Table manners. I'm Jessie Ware and we're in my kitchen today. Lenny, you've walked in. You've brought a vegan lemon cake.

• 1:46Speaker 04

  A dairy-free lemon tart.

• 1:48Jessie Ware?

  How are you?

• 1:49Speaker 04

  I'm fine. How are you?

• 1:50Jessie Ware?

  I'm... Am I... what am I doing? I'm okay. I've got a bit of a mental day.

• 1:55Speaker 04

Must be fitting everything in before you go away for a couple of days.

• 1:59Jessie Ware?

Yep, you are looking after my children for 12 hours.

• 2:03Speaker 04

My absolute joy to do it.

• 2:05Jessie Ware?

Good. Mum's algorithm has gone mental and so now all you do is send me things about grandmothers. How amazing grandmothers are.

• 2:14Speaker 04

That was sweet though, that little girl.

• 2:16Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 2:16Speaker 04

It said, who do you like the best, your mummy and daddy? And she went, grandma.

• 2:20Jessie Ware?

Yeah. Do you think my children would say that?

• 2:22Speaker 04

I hope so. Because I will be bringing lots of Percy Pigs and things. No, I won't. I'm teasing you.

• 2:28Jessie Ware?

Anyway, yeah, I'm all right. Yeah, me and Sam are going to go away to Kent for the night. And we're going to the Sportsman, which I'm really excited about. I've never been.

• 2:36Speaker 04

  How did you get in?

• 2:38Jessie Ware?

It was fine to get in.

• 2:39Speaker 04

  Oh, really?

• 2:40Jessie Ware?

I put a gun to Sam's head before Christmas and was like, this is my Christmas present. We're going wherever the Sportsman is.

• 2:46Speaker 04

  It's fun, baby.

• 2:46Jessie Ware?

And then we're going to the pig. So it's really nice. I'm really looking forward to it. I was trying to put in the Fordwich Arms as well, but I felt like that was taking the piss. So I'm going to come home early. So the guest that we've got on today is coming straight from the airport.

• 2:59Speaker 04

  Yep.

• 2:59Jessie Ware?

We've got Emma Corrin coming over, who is the most brilliant actor, played Diana in The Crown, My Policeman with Harry Styles. They are about to be in the big Pride and Prejudice adaptation.

• 3:12Speaker 04

Is it going to be a TV adaptation or a film?

• 3:15Jessie Ware?

Yeah, it's on Netflix, I think. And they're coming over today to talk about this new independent film called A Hundred Nights of Hero. It's kind of a bit Arabian Nights, bit Handmaid's Tale. It's based on this graphic novel by Isabel Greenberg, which was a huge success. The cast in it is, you know, everyone from Richard E. Grant to Emma Corrin to Charlie XCX.

• 3:37Speaker 04

  What have you made, darling?

• 3:38Jessie Ware?

I have made, right, you know, I love Kitty Coles.

• 3:42Speaker 04

  No.

• 3:43Jessie Ware?

Okay. Do you remember when I did for Paddy McGuinness, that like roast chicken with that delicious charred spring onion, mayonnaise, Parmesan? And I feel like she is the queen of the chicken.

• 3:52Speaker 04

  What's her cookbook called?

• 3:53Jessie Ware?

Her book's called Make More with Less. And I was on holiday with the kids in Lanzarote, went to this brilliant restaurant called La Lapa. She's run by an Englishwoman that I think has lived and been brought up in Lanzarote. We started talking and she mentioned that her cousin was Kitty Coles. And I said, oh my God, I love Kitty Coles. So then I resurrected my love for her recipes. And so I'd seen this recipe that she put up on Instagram. That was a roast chicken that you do with orange segments and a bit of fish sauce, lime juice. And you kind of cook it in the juices. And then with those juices, you add fish sauce, lime. Chili, ginger and the roasted garlics that's in there and you kind of make a nice gravy.

• 4:36Jessie Ware?

And then we're just, I'm just serving it with lettuce, baby gem lettuce, um, shiso leaves, which are also called parrilla leaves.

• 4:42Speaker 04

  Never heard of that.

• 4:43Jessie Ware?

  They're really fragrant, amazing taste.

• 4:45Speaker 04

  Delicious.

• 4:46Jessie Ware?

And then with rice, jasmine rice.

• 4:48Speaker 04

  Fabulous.

• 4:48Jessie Ware?

  And then you've made.

• 4:50Speaker 04

I've made a dairy free lemon tart.

• 4:53Jessie Ware?

  Lovely.

• 4:55Speaker 04

I hope it's nice. I made the crust and it's got coconut in the crust.

• 4:59Jessie Ware?

  Lovely. This is perfect.

• 5:00Speaker 04

  Yeah, I hope so.

• 5:02Jessie Ware?

  Perfect.

• 5:03Speaker 04

And I brought dairy free ice cream with.

• 5:05Jessie Ware?

Amazing. Thanks mum. Emma Corrin coming up on Table Mamas.

• 5:17Jessie Ware?

  Emma Corrin.

• 5:18Speaker 05

  Hello.

• 5:18Jessie Ware?

You've just come from the airport.

• 5:20Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 5:20Jessie Ware?

  You've washed your face.

• 5:21Speaker 05

  I've washed my face.

• 5:22Jessie Ware?

You got changed in the loo.

• 5:23Speaker 05

  I did.

• 5:24Jessie Ware?

In the airport, I think, maybe.

• 5:25Speaker 05

  Yeah, I did.

• 5:26Jessie Ware?

  Where have you come from?

• 5:27Speaker 05

Uh, I came from Los Angeles.

• 5:29Jessie Ware?

  Oy vey.

• 5:31Speaker 04

  I know.

• 5:31Jessie Ware?

  That's a schlep.

• 5:32Speaker 04

  Ten and a half hours.

• 5:33Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 5:34Jessie Ware?

  Do you live in Margate?

• 5:36Speaker 05

I live between Margate and London, yeah.

• 5:38Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 5:38Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 5:39Jessie Ware?

Um, so where are you going back to after this?

• 5:41Speaker 05

  I'm going to London.

• 5:42Jessie Ware?

  Okay, great.

• 5:43Speaker 05

I'm going to London, I'm going to North London, yeah.

• 5:45Jessie Ware?

Oh, so, okay, you're a North Londoner.

• 5:47Speaker 05

I'm a North Londoner. I used to be a South Londoner, actually.

• 5:49Jessie Ware?

Oh, what, what made you change?

• 5:51Speaker 05

Um, I think because a lot of our friends, I, I live with friends and have lived with friends for like the last 10 years. And, um, a lot of our friends were sort of migrating up north, so I, we sort of followed, followed the herd.

• 6:04Jessie Ware?

  Which bit of south?

• 6:05Speaker 05

Um, between, those roads between like Peckham Rye and Lordship Lane.

• 6:09Jessie Ware?

Oh, you're very close to it now.

• 6:11Speaker 05

Yeah, yeah, it was nice driving through here.

• 6:13Jessie Ware?

Oh, sweet. Um, so let's take it, well, we're going to be talking about the new film.

• 6:18Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 6:18Jessie Ware?

Which, were you in LA promoting?

• 6:21Speaker 05

  A Hundred Nights. No, I wasn't.

• 6:23Jessie Ware?

What were you doing in LA then, promoting, promoting two things at the same time?

• 6:26Speaker 05

I was actually in LA not for, not for promoting business.

• 6:29Jessie Ware?

  Oh, okay.

• 6:30Speaker 05

  Just other stuff, yeah.

• 6:31Jessie Ware?

  Did you meet well?

• 6:32Speaker 05

I did eat well. I went to a really nice restaurant, which I'm probably gonna pronounce wrong, but it's funky.

• 6:38Jessie Ware?

  Oh, Evan Funk.

• 6:39Speaker 05

  Funk?

• 6:40Jessie Ware?

Yeah, I don't know if it's funky or not.

• 6:41Speaker 05

  I don't know.

• 6:42Jessie Ware?

  Pasta place.

• 6:42Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 6:43Jessie Ware?

  The Italian.

• 6:43Speaker 05

  Really nice.

• 6:44Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 6:44Speaker 05

  Really, really good.

• 6:45Jessie Ware?

  Really expensive.

• 6:46Speaker 05

I had a, yes, yeah, yeah.

• 6:48Jessie Ware?

But what did you eat there?

• 6:49Speaker 05

I, I ate a lemon pasta. I basically just found out I can't eat dairy, which is so annoying. And I didn't, I completely walked into the trap. I've been working with this amazing nutritionist, because I had some stuff going on with my skin earlier this year. And she was like, well, let's do one of those allergy things. And I wasn't expecting to find anything. And she was like, you're super allergic to dairy.

• 7:09Jessie Ware?

That's why I didn't want. Well, no, and also I was kind of, when we were doing a bit of research on you, you know, you've talked about a Last Supper before, and there was a lot of dairy in it, so that must have been pre-nutritionist.

• 7:19Speaker 05

I was a big, big dairy person.

• 7:22Jessie Ware?

  Oh, mate.

• 7:22Speaker 05

Yeah, like Lurpak was my life, really. I love it.

• 7:27Jessie Ware?

  Oh, my. Ice cream?

• 7:28Speaker 05

Ice cream, all of it. Like, yeah, creamy sauces. Yeah, it's devastating.

• 7:33Jessie Ware?

  I'm sorry for your loss.

• 7:34Speaker 04

  Can you reintroduce it?

• 7:36Speaker 05

I'm hoping so. I'm not really sure.

• 7:39Speaker 04

Sometimes if you're allergic, you can reintroduce it slowly and.

• 7:42Jessie Ware?

Couldn't you like pop a lactaid before?

• 7:44Speaker 05

Well, this is, I think it's the protein in dairy. I don't know what it's called. I forget what it's called, but it's not actually the lactose I'm intolerant to. It's the other one. Yeah.

• 7:55Jessie Ware?

I don't know how to help you with that.

• 7:56Speaker 05

I know. Maybe, maybe, I think reintroducing it could help.

• 8:00Jessie Ware?

Yeah. Have you found that people don't invite you around for dinner as much now?

• 8:03Speaker 05

Yeah, I just, it's one of these things where I just constantly wanna apologize for it, you know? I hate being the person in the restaurant being like, no, I'm so sorry.

• 8:08Jessie Ware?

So how did it work having lemon pasta? Because I would have imagined that would be with like butter.

• 8:13Speaker 05

Yeah, they could make it no dairy. But I was devastated because on the menu was butternut, squash, and brown butter and sage ravioli.

• 8:22Jessie Ware?

  Oh, it's delicious.

• 8:23Speaker 05

Which is just like my favorite combination of things ever. So good. And I couldn't have that. It's like, is there any way you can make it dairy free and you want it?

• 8:31Speaker 04

So, so with the lemon pasta, they probably use olive oil, but they emulsify the lemon with the water from the pasta, don't they?

• 8:37Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, I guess.

• 8:38Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 8:38Jessie Ware?

So let's talk about growing up. You grew up in South Africa?

• 8:43Speaker 05

I grew up between, I'd know, I grew up in Kent in Sevenoaks, but my mum is South African and my dad moved there when he was young and his family's out there. So all my family, extended family are in South Africa.

• 8:55Jessie Ware?

So did you spend a lot of time there?

• 8:57Speaker 05

Spent a lot of time there. It was sort of like. My parents moved, didn't really ever intend to live in the UK, but they came over and then ended up staying because my dad's work and then. I was, they were always meant to move back, but then they never did. So then, yeah, it was like an every school holiday kind of thing. We went back.

• 9:13Speaker 04

  Did you ever eat anchovet?

• 9:16Speaker 05

  No, what's anchovet?

• 9:17Speaker 04

It's like an anchovy, basically, you can only get in South Africa, made by a company called PEX.

• 9:23Speaker 05

  Oh, yeah.

• 9:23Speaker 04

About three years ago, they stopped making it, but I've heard it's coming back.

• 9:27Speaker 05

  How have you heard?

• 9:31Speaker 04

I looked it up about PEX anchovet and they said it's coming back.

• 9:35Speaker 05

  Why did it stop?

• 9:37Speaker 04

Because of lots of colorings in it and they just decided to stop it. Um, I don't care about the colorings. I, it was so delicious on toast. Yeah.

• 9:46Speaker 05

Yes, I heard about it. My favorite chocolate is peppermint crisp, which is like a really pepperminty. Chocolate and I think that was, I remember hearing once that just has such terrible things in it for you and I was like, no, I wanna live in ignorance. Yeah. So you grew up in Kent? Grew up in Kent, yeah. Who was around the dinner table and what's a memorable dish from your childhood? Oh, God. Okay. So it was all my family. I've got two younger brothers. Um, so we were all around the dinner table, but we were very fast eaters. So this was like very, really. Are you still fast? I'm so fast and I re- I hate it.

• 10:19Speaker 04

  I'm gonna time you.

• 10:21Speaker 05

I'm such a fast eater. Do you think it's from having older brothers? Younger brothers. Oh, younger brothers. Oh, so you led the way? I led, I led the way. Were they very hungry and you were worried they were gonna take the seconds? Yeah, maybe. Or it was just like, we always had like fun things to do and we wanted to get like, I don't know, through dinner. But like actually all sitting at a dinner table and chatting and having like, making that a moment and an event in the day was relatively alien to me until. I sort of started, I guess, going out with friends and stuff in my late, late teens. And then I was like, oh, wow, people spend like hours. Around the dinner table and it's so nice. Oh, okay. So you weren't like ready to go? No, I really loved it. I really, really loved it. Yeah. So what was a memorable dish?

• 11:05Speaker 05

My mom, my mom's a real, really big fan of like tray bakes. She loved to bake. Really? She'd just like chuck everything in a. Oh, she was like a, a re- pioneer of the tray bake? She should, yeah, like a cheesy tuna pasta tray thing and it was a broccoli. It was basically just whatever she had in the fridge, but she put it in a thing. And cheese on top. It was always cheese. Was she a good cook? Yeah, she is a good cook. I would say she maybe cooked functionally. I don't know if she like enjoyed the process of it. I think it was very much to like make supper, to like make something for us to eat, not.

• 11:46Speaker 04

  Like mum.

• 11:46Speaker 05

Yeah, yeah, but I think she's discovering it more now, like we cook together when she, they always come down to Margate now to have Christmas with me. And we'll cook Christmas dinner together and I'm sort of, as I've got more into cooking and really enjoy the process of it. And I I think she's sort of, I'm introducing her to that way of way of thinking.

• 12:09Speaker 04

  South African food is fantastic.

• 12:11Speaker 05

  It is amazing.

• 12:12Speaker 04

I mean, the produce, the meat and the fish.

• 12:14Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 12:15Speaker 04

  Kinklet.

• 12:16Speaker 05

  Mm hmm.

• 12:16Speaker 04

And butterfish and all the very wonderful fishes that you can't get anywhere else.

• 12:20Speaker 05

Can you bribe really well? I can't, I myself cannot bribe, but I have a lot of, um, yeah, family who can bribe. And whenever we did Christmas in South Africa, that was like a bribe on the beach, which I love. It was so good. Yeah.

• 12:30Speaker 04

Oh, wow. Where do you stand on Bill Tong?

• 12:34Speaker 05

I love Bill Tong. I love Bill Tong. And those kind of foods like Bill Tong, rusks, like Omar's rusks, um, they're like.

• 12:45Speaker 04

  What, like the baby things?

• 12:46Speaker 05

Yeah, they're baby things, but actually in South Africa, they're not baby adjacent. It's more just like, yeah, these, this box called Omar Rusks. And I don't know, I just grew up eating that. Yeah. And that will all, th- those kind of things will always, i- is always infused with such nostalgia for me in a great way.

• 13:02Speaker 04

Do you still go back to South Africa?

• 13:04Speaker 05

You know what? I haven't been back. I lost my grandma, my mum's mum during, just actually just before Covid, which is kind of a blessing, I think, actually. Because she didn't get, she never got Covid, but.

• 13:16Speaker 04

  Thank god, yeah.

• 13:18Speaker 05

Um, I don't think she would have enjoyed that period of time. And um, since we lost her, I haven't been back. And, you know, I it's, I sort of need to go, but I want to go with my mum and my brothers and actually just coordinating that time for us all to go. And make the most of the trip as well. I think when you go, it's kind of worth going for two weeks and you've got so much family there, so.

• 13:39Speaker 04

And I mean, I guess since like two thousand and nineteen, you've been kind of booked and busy.

• 13:44Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 13:44Speaker 04

And it's been really full on.

• 13:45Speaker 05

Yeah, and it's been so much on my mind for the last few years to try and to try and go out, but yeah.

• 13:50Speaker 04

  How did you start acting?

• 13:52Speaker 05

God, did I start acting? I, my earliest memory of acting was in primary school in a production of Wind in the Willows. And it's actually really funny, because I have always said that I played Toad of Toad Hall.

• 14:07Speaker 04

  I can't really imagine that.

• 14:08Speaker 05

Well, this is the thing. And then I recently bumped into a friend from school who I hadn't seen in ages and was actually in a place in Margate. And she was like, she was like, I always dine out on the story that in our last year of primary school, I got the drama award and you didn't. Which really made me laugh. And then she was like, and I always remember that you played Ratty in Winning the Willows. And I was like, oh my god, have I just like completely misremembered what part I played?

• 14:38Speaker 04

You're not very portly, are you?

• 14:41Speaker 05

No. I'm not very ratty either, let's just put that out there.

• 14:44Speaker 04

Well, what are the other great parts in that?

• 14:46Speaker 05

  Mole.

• 14:47Speaker 04

  Mole.

• 14:48Speaker 05

Mole, maybe I'm more of a mole.

• 14:49Speaker 04

  I think you're more of a mole.

• 14:50Speaker 05

Yeah, I need to, I should have asked my mum what she remembers.

• 14:54Speaker 04

  So that was the beginning?

• 14:55Speaker 05

That was the bug. I remember, yeah, whatever, whoever I played in that. And I probably played like village in number three or something in reality, but I remember after the production, a friend's mum saying, that was really good sweetheart, you could be, you could be an actor. And they were probably just saying it very by the by, but I remember being like, yeah. Oh, you took that like, yeah, good. Well, you obviously were good and you are good. You're great. I loved it. I really loved it. Yeah. Did you go to drama school? No, I tried for so many years. And actually recently, my basement in Margate flooded. And so like two weeks ago when I was there, I was having to go through all the gross mildewy boxes, which I'd left for far too long. It was so grim.

• 15:37Speaker 05

But on top of this box that was completely like disintegrating was my rather rejection letter. And I was like, oh my god, I can't believe I still have this. And it was so wild to read. And I remember being so crushed. I remember exactly where I was, it's in my bedroom, sitting in my bed when I got it. I remember feeling like the floor just fell away. And I was like, oh my god, I don't, I don't just stand a chance. Because I was so convinced that was the only way, like drama school was the only way.

• 16:04Speaker 04

But did you act at university?

• 16:07Speaker 05

Yeah, so then I had a bit of a weird, sort of, I went to Bristol, studied drama and was really, really unhappy there. Um, but that wasn't the fault of the course or anything. That was just, I think, because I wasn't really doing. What I loved or I didn't feel like I was in the right place and I didn't really make any friends.

• 16:24Jessie Ware?

Oh no, I can't imagine that.

• 16:26Speaker 04

Where did you, where did you live?

• 16:28Speaker 05

Well, there's a thing because I didn't really wanna go to uni. I didn't really wanna study drama. I wanted to be doing it. And I think the rejection of drama school had really hit me. And it was basically my school that was like, make sure you apply for universities. So you're like on the right course or whatever. And so you have a backup. So I sort of just like completely diverted off the path, this thing that I felt like I should be doing or everyone was telling me to do. And because I didn't really want to be there, I didn't do all the admin stuff, like go and look up halls and like where you should be living. So I didn't get into any of the accommodations. So I was renting this like strange flat. But actually, I tell you what got through me that time, got me through that time was Bake Off.

• 17:07Speaker 05

I made friends with a girl who lived next to me and all we did was just religiously watch Bake Off. I remember that very, very well. And then, and then I left.

• 17:17Jessie Ware?

  You didn't finish?

• 17:17Speaker 05

I didn't finish. I was there for like two, two months.

• 17:20Speaker 04

You've missed your spot. Prue's leaving, but Nigella's got it.

• 17:23Speaker 05

  I saw this.

• 17:24Jessie Ware?

  Nigella's got it.

• 17:25Speaker 05

Yeah, Nigella's got it. I saw this.

• 17:26Jessie Ware?

  I'm happy about that.

• 17:27Speaker 05

Me too, me too. I mean, I miss Prue.

• 17:29Speaker 04

She'll bring a bit of innuendo.

• 17:31Jessie Ware?

  Oh, the outrageous.

• 17:33Speaker 05

  Oh my god, that's fantastic.

• 17:36Jessie Ware?

  Really, really good.

• 17:37Speaker 04

I was gonna put myself forward, but there you go.

• 17:40Jessie Ware?

That would have also been amazing.

• 17:42Speaker 05

Lost out to Nigella, I think it's okay.

• 17:44Speaker 04

  It's alright.

• 17:44Jessie Ware?

Um, do you watch any other um cooking programmes? Or is that kind of your religious one that you make sure that you watch?

• 17:52Speaker 05

I love, I've always loved Bake Off. What else do I watch?

• 17:54Speaker 04

Do you still love it? I love it.

• 17:55Speaker 05

I still love it. I really do.

• 17:56Speaker 04

I love it and I, it's on in America and you watched on Netflix in the States.

• 18:02Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 18:02Speaker 04

  So it's on every episode.

• 18:04Speaker 05

  Oh my god.

• 18:04Speaker 04

  I also love.

• 18:05Jessie Ware?

  You're doing reruns.

• 18:06Speaker 04

I also love that one that your children love.

• 18:09Speaker 05

  Is it cake?

• 18:10Speaker 04

Is it cake? Have you ever watched it?

• 18:11Speaker 05

Is it um, yes, is it furniture or whatever or is it cake?

• 18:15Speaker 04

  Is it cake?

• 18:15Jessie Ware?

Yeah, like it'll be, it'll be like.

• 18:17Speaker 04

They'll do a dartboard and you can't, you have to say which is the one.

• 18:22Speaker 05

  So good.

• 18:22Speaker 04

Your children love it. And the big thing is when they cut in.

• 18:26Speaker 05

  Oh, it's so satisfying.

• 18:27Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 18:28Speaker 05

I used to get, I'm off Instagram now, which is exciting, but um I used to get into real, real holes. Um with the, with the is it cake or not? Cause there are people who make these like really life, life like cakes and it's just. How do they do it?

• 18:44Jessie Ware?

Have you seen the one where the woman cuts into the parrot and her, I think this is very cruel, that her pet parrot squawks and is like, oh my gosh, that's terrible.

• 18:52Speaker 05

  I know, cruel.

• 18:53Speaker 04

You could tell whether it's a parrot or not.

• 18:56Speaker 05

  Surely it was moving.

• 18:57Jessie Ware?

  It was very realistic cake.

• 18:59Speaker 05

  It was just.

• 18:59Jessie Ware?

But she did that to her own parrot.

• 19:01Speaker 05

  That's not nice.

• 19:02Jessie Ware?

  Not nice.

• 19:03Speaker 05

  The parrot's gonna remember that.

• 19:04Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, exactly.

• 19:05Speaker 05

  They famously remember that.

• 19:06Speaker 04

  Do you cook?

• 19:07Speaker 05

  I do cook.

• 19:08Speaker 04

And what, you said you like cooking.

• 19:10Speaker 05

  I really like cooking.

• 19:11Speaker 04

So what would you cook if we came round?

• 19:14Speaker 05

Oh, okay, this is fun. Um.

• 19:18Speaker 04

If we turned the tables and you're cooking.

• 19:20Speaker 05

Yeah, yeah. Okay, okay, okay. It's gonna be one, two things.

• 19:23Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 19:24Speaker 05

I don't have any original thought in cooking. I need a recipe because I need the focus and actually really like that. I like being directed.

• 19:31Speaker 04

  Have you got favourite cook?

• 19:32Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 19:33Speaker 04

  Okay, who's your favourite?

• 19:34Speaker 05

  Mirasoda.

• 19:35Speaker 04

  Oh.

• 19:36Speaker 05

  I'm obsessed with Mirasoda.

• 19:38Speaker 04

We had her on the podcast.

• 19:40Speaker 05

  Do you actually?

• 19:40Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 19:41Speaker 05

I completely missed that. Oh, I would, I would expect her to be. She's amazing.

• 19:46Speaker 04

So you, would you cook vegetarian then?

• 19:48Speaker 05

Yeah, well, I'm not vegetarian. I do eat everything apart from tragically dairy, but um, I've lived with people, I've lived with friends for a long time and we've always had a vegan or a vegetarian in the house and we all cook together every night, which is amazing.

• 20:01Speaker 04

Dinner is such a good cookbook.

• 20:03Speaker 05

Dinner is so, I've just got dinner. I've always had East.

• 20:06Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 20:07Speaker 05

  And the other one.

• 20:08Speaker 04

Wonderful, but I don't know, I know, I've got East and Dinner.

• 20:12Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 20:12Speaker 04

And I think Dinner is an amazing cookbook.

• 20:15Speaker 05

  So good.

• 20:16Speaker 04

And I think she's better than ever now.

• 20:18Speaker 05

Yeah, I think so as well. And I love that, I mean, I, I love eating meat, but I don't notice that anything's missing when I'm making her recipes, you know? The, the like flavour profiles and everything she puts in there just is so brilliant, but I don't miss it. Um.

• 20:36Speaker 04

So you might cook a Mirasoda recipe?

• 20:38Speaker 05

I'd cook a Mirasoda. I recently made her, I think they're Ben Ben noodles. And it was such a funny recipe to read on the page because it's mushrooms and gherkins and noodles. And I was like, what is that gonna taste like? And I made it and it's so good. You like chop up the mushrooms really finely. You're meant to.

• 20:56Speaker 04

Like all those blitzen, so they're like.

• 20:58Speaker 05

Yeah, you're meant to blitzen, but I don't have a blitzer, so I just spent ages cutting out really small. And then do the same with the gherkins. And then there are some specific, I think Chinese spices and oils and vinegars you're meant to get. That I sort of searched for and found. And it's just so good, because I love pickles and gherkins, anything with pickles and gherkins. So I think I'd make that for you.

• 21:22Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 21:23Speaker 05

  It's a nice one.

• 21:24Speaker 04

Did you love Jane Austen before you've landed this enormous role? That is probably my favourite character in the whole of the world.

• 21:33Speaker 05

  She's mine too. I, I, yeah, I just, I mean, she's amazing, isn't she?

• 21:36Speaker 04

  Loved Elizabeth, yeah.

• 21:37Speaker 05

I loved Elizabeth. I feel like there was a brief patch of school where you studied the book to death and they kind of ruined it for you. But I really, really love her and I've always loved the series and I loved the Joe Wright film. I just thought that was so beautiful. And it is just one of those classics I think will be watched forever.

• 21:56Speaker 04

Are you going to have short hair in it or long hair?

• 21:59Speaker 05

No, I'm going to have long hair, but you know what? They won, there was a, we did a test on the camera test day where I had something that was called a Titus cut. Which was quite popular at the time, which was short and it was very curly at the front, but quite short at the back.

• 22:11Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 22:12Speaker 05

But I think the consensus was that it wasn't right. And I sort of let them sort of.

• 22:19Speaker 04

And Jack is not going to have a Scottish accent, is he?

• 22:22Speaker 05

  He's not.

• 22:23Speaker 04

  No.

• 22:23Speaker 05

  He's not.

• 22:24Jessie Ware?

He never has a Scottish accent.

• 22:25Speaker 05

  No, I know.

• 22:26Speaker 04

So, I mean, I was really blown away in Hamnet that Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal had proper English accents.

• 22:34Speaker 05

  Yeah, they didn't have.

• 22:35Speaker 04

And the tone of Paul Mescal's voice was slightly different.

• 22:38Speaker 05

I haven't seen it yet. I'm dying to see it.

• 22:40Speaker 04

Do you have to do lot, have you had to do lots of accents?

• 22:44Speaker 05

I've had to do American before, yeah. And I always worry because there's nothing worse than when some, you're watching something and you think, rrr, yikes.

• 22:52Speaker 04

But you were perfect Princess Diana.

• 22:54Speaker 05

Thank you. I love that voice. That voice was.

• 22:56Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 22:56Speaker 05

  Her voice.

• 22:57Jessie Ware?

You were, you were an incredible Diana.

• 23:00Speaker 05

  Thank you. I loved that.

• 23:01Speaker 04

  Did you love doing it?

• 23:03Speaker 05

  I loved it.

• 23:11Speaker 00

• 24:20Speaker 04

I'm going to ask you about your last supper.

• 24:22Speaker 05

  Is that what I would?

• 24:23Speaker 04

Before you're going on a desert, you're not going on death row because I can't bear it.

• 24:27Speaker 05

  Okay, okay.

• 24:28Speaker 04

But before you go on a desert island for about six months, what would you like to have? Start a main drink of choice and a Pudd.

• 24:38Speaker 05

Okay, my drink of choice is going to be a Negroni.

• 24:40Jessie Ware?

Oh, you know what someone told me? It's a really good tip.

• 24:43Speaker 05

  Oh, yeah.

• 24:44Jessie Ware?

You pour the Negroni through rice. Have you heard about this?

• 24:49Speaker 05

  What?

• 24:50Jessie Ware?

And it gives like a creaminess, like from the starch of the rice, it gives a creaminess.

• 24:55Speaker 05

How will you pour it, like in a sieve?

• 24:57Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, I guess.

• 24:57Speaker 04

  But do you do it?

• 24:59Jessie Ware?

Or you shake it up with it and then sieve it out.

• 25:01Speaker 04

But is it cooked rice or raw rice?

• 25:05Speaker 05

Is it like the, you know, when you're going to wash rice loaves? And it's all the white that comes out?

• 25:09Jessie Ware?

  Creaminess that comes in.

• 25:11Speaker 05

  Oh, my God.

• 25:12Speaker 04

So go on, so Negroni. Is that your little aperitif?

• 25:17Speaker 05

  It is.

• 25:18Speaker 04

Yeah, and what's your starter then?

• 25:20Speaker 05

  My starter would probably be.

• 25:24Speaker 05

Would my starter be? Can you have a sausage roll as a starter?

• 25:28Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 25:29Speaker 05

  I'd like a sausage roll.

• 25:30Speaker 04

  Where from? Greg's or Gail's?

• 25:34Speaker 05

  Oh.

• 25:34Speaker 04

Gail's do a really banging sausage.

• 25:36Speaker 05

Gail's do do a sausage roll. They also do those spinach and feta ones. They're really nice. Yeah. I feel like, I can't remember where I've had it, but there's one.

• 25:46Speaker 05

It's a pub somewhere. I can't remember where it is, but they do a sausage roll and they do like really good, like Dijon mustard.

• 25:50Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 25:51Speaker 05

And it's like a dip situation. It's so good.

• 25:53Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 25:54Speaker 05

  So I'd have that.

• 25:55Speaker 04

  To start with.

• 25:55Speaker 05

To start with. And then it would definitely be pasta based. Cause I love pasta.

• 25:59Speaker 04

  So what's your favourite pasta?

• 26:03Speaker 05

There is a chicken and orzo and leek recipe.

• 26:09Jessie Ware?

Fuck's sake, I was gonna do something like that.

• 26:10Speaker 05

It's so good. So good. And I think actually it might be from a Julius Roberts thing, but my friend Billy has maybe kind of riffed on the recipe and she makes it a lot. And actually she, we met because she um was doing my costume on um Murder at End of the World, which I did in New York. And then she sent me to the UK and she was on Pride and Prejudice with me and she would bring in these like vats of chicken, leek and orzo.

• 26:35Speaker 04

Have you finished Pride and Prejudice?

• 26:36Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 26:37Speaker 04

  Oh, wow.

• 26:38Speaker 05

  Mm.

• 26:38Speaker 04

  Is it good?

• 26:39Speaker 05

  I think so.

• 26:40Speaker 04

  Oh, yeah.

• 26:41Speaker 05

  I I hope so.

• 26:42Speaker 04

  You're pleased with it?

• 26:43Speaker 05

I am pleased with it. I really am. Yeah. I had the best time. I had the best time. I think that always infuses.

• 26:47Speaker 04

  Where did you film it?

• 26:49Speaker 05

  All over the UK.

• 26:52Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 26:52Speaker 05

Yeah. We sort of went up around Leeds a bit. Um, to Harewood House. I think it's Harewood. One of the big.

• 26:59Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 27:00Speaker 05

Ones. And then filmed around um Harefordshire, Harefordshire.

• 27:05Speaker 04

So after you've finished your chickeny, chickeny, pastory, orzo bait.

• 27:10Speaker 05

  Mm-hmm.

• 27:10Speaker 04

  Are you gonna have dessert?

• 27:12Speaker 05

Yeah, I will. I will have dessert. And I will have.

• 27:14Speaker 04

And are you gonna have wine with your meal?

• 27:16Speaker 05

Yeah. And I would have a re- oh, oh. You know what, I'd have, um, there's a wine called Chin Chin.

• 27:24Jessie Ware?

  Oh, yeah.

• 27:24Speaker 05

  Which is so good.

• 27:25Jessie Ware?

  I've never heard of it.

• 27:26Speaker 05

  Sabina Verde, Sabina Verde.

• 27:27Jessie Ware?

  Oh, Chin Chin.

• 27:28Speaker 05

  Really good, yeah.

• 27:29Jessie Ware?

So it's crisp, a crisp wine.

• 27:30Speaker 05

  Very crisp white wine.

• 27:32Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 27:32Speaker 05

And then maybe a Basque cheesecake.

• 27:35Jessie Ware?

  They're great, aren't they?

• 27:37Speaker 05

Yeah, they look great. I think Basque is so good, and when you just like cut into one.

• 27:40Jessie Ware?

  I know, fantastic.

• 27:42Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 27:42Jessie Ware?

But you won't be able to have that because you're very free.

• 27:45Speaker 05

But I feel like if I'm going to the desert island, I'm just gonna reap the consequences of that.

• 27:49Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 27:50Speaker 05

Oh, my god, this is amazing.

• 27:52Jessie Ware?

No, okay, so it's Kitty Coles's, um, like, Asian roast chicken, we're gonna just do like little kind of pockets with the lettuce and try and chat as well.

• 28:05Speaker 05

Oh, my god, this is amazing. I like things when you build.

• 28:09Jessie Ware?

  Okay, good.

• 28:09Speaker 05

You build it, interactive, an interactive.

• 28:12Jessie Ware?

We're gonna do bowls, just because.

• 28:13Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 28:14Jessie Ware?

Yeah. There's these beautiful shiso leaves, um, and then, yeah, baby jam.

• 28:19Speaker 05

  What are the shiso leaves?

• 28:20Jessie Ware?

Have a little taste of it. I've never, I've never heard of them. You've probably had it like.

• 28:24Speaker 05

Tastes like a perfume, but in a nice way.

• 28:26Jessie Ware?

Yeah, it's quite perfumed, yeah, so.

• 28:27Speaker 05

  Whoa.

• 28:28Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, beautiful, right?

• 28:29Speaker 05

  That's so intense.

• 28:30Jessie Ware?

Oh, it's lovely. They're called Perilla leaves.

• 28:32Speaker 05

  Oh, my god.

• 28:33Jessie Ware?

Yeah, quite like fragrant, so yeah, take, take a bit of chicken and like, yeah, help yourself.

• 28:40Speaker 05

  Thank you.

• 28:41Jessie Ware?

I love Margate. I really do.

• 28:44Speaker 05

  You know it well.

• 28:45Jessie Ware?

I only know it through, well, I have like.

• 28:48Speaker 05

  Robert.

• 28:48Jessie Ware?

Robert Diamond, who everyone knows, who is like the mayor of Margate. Him and Tracy Emin.

• 28:54Speaker 05

  No, Tracy's, Tracy is.

• 28:56Jessie Ware?

  Tracy is kind of like.

• 28:57Speaker 05

  She got.

• 28:58Jessie Ware?

  She got honoured, didn't she?

• 28:59Speaker 05

She got honoured by the mayor, she got the key or the, something, she got given something.

• 29:03Jessie Ware?

I've had really good times in Margate.

• 29:05Speaker 05

  I'm glad, I love it.

• 29:06Jessie Ware?

  I love it.

• 29:07Speaker 05

  I really love it.

• 29:07Jessie Ware?

And you've talked about Big Shot, the coffee spot, do you still go there?

• 29:11Speaker 05

Love Big Shot, yeah, that's like my morning.

• 29:13Jessie Ware?

  Right.

• 29:13Speaker 05

Walk past, well, Curve Coffee, which is amazing. Curve is just above the old town, um, kind of adjacent to the high street in a little square. And, um, Curve does the best kimchi toasty that you'll ever try.

• 29:28Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 29:28Speaker 05

  So good.

• 29:29Jessie Ware?

  Kimchi toasty.

• 29:29Speaker 05

Kimchi toasty, it is like three kinds of cheese. It's actually so, so diet, it's so bad.

• 29:35Jessie Ware?

So you can cheese doesn't hit quite the same.

• 29:36Speaker 05

I've been having it with V and cheese and it is not the same. It's not, it's not as bad as I thought it would be. I was really bracing myself for like, yeah. But it's like, the non vegan one is three kinds of cheese, kimchi, and on the, on the side, they have, I don't know how to say it, but zhug, zug?

• 29:53Jessie Ware?

Zug, oh yeah, Z H O U G, yeah, the kind of green.

• 29:56Speaker 05

Yeah, zug, and then, um, pickles, like a big pickle pop.

• 30:01Jessie Ware?

  Oh yum.

• 30:02Speaker 05

  Such a good combination thing.

• 30:03Jessie Ware?

I'm just gonna pa- pass this to you, cause otherwise you're gonna.

• 30:05Speaker 05

  Yeah, please, sorry.

• 30:06Jessie Ware?

That's okay. I'm gonna, I'm gonna give you breasts, cause I think that's a bit easier, and then I'll give you some segments, and, um, let's get some more juice on that. Okay.

• 30:16Speaker 05

  That is so good.

• 30:17Jessie Ware?

  Is it good? Okay, good.

• 30:18Speaker 05

  It's so good.

• 30:20Jessie Ware?

So, A Hundred Nights of Hero.

• 30:21Speaker 05

  Mm-hmm.

• 30:21Jessie Ware?

Really enjoyed the kind of, the colour of it, and you were so incredible. The cast.

• 30:30Speaker 05

  Fun cast.

• 30:30Jessie Ware?

Really fun. I love that, like, Felicity just, like, pops up at the end of the movie. What drew you to it? Had you read the graphic novel?

• 30:37Speaker 05

  I hadn't, no.

• 30:38Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 30:39Speaker 05

So I read the script and then read the novel after, and I just found it enchanting. It reminded me of, like, Princess Bride.

• 30:46Jessie Ware?

  Hmm.

• 30:47Speaker 05

Or A Knight's Tale, you know, that kind of, like, ancient. Well, when I first started watching, I said this is a children's film. Yeah, and I love that quality. It's so nice. I love.

• 30:58Jessie Ware?

  It's not a children's film.

• 31:00Speaker 05

It's not a children's film. But I like films that have a childish quality to them and a playfulness to them. And I really liked, um, that it was based in a graphic novel, which also has that kind of charm, you know?

• 31:11Jessie Ware?

And like, did you, how long did you film it for? And where, where were you filming it?

• 31:16Speaker 05

  It was really.

• 31:17Jessie Ware?

  A bit short?

• 31:18Speaker 05

  Hmm.

• 31:19Jessie Ware?

Cause there's not many locations, are there? So it's quite.

• 31:20Speaker 05

We were in one place. We were at Nebworth House, which is just outside of London.

• 31:24Jessie Ware?

  Oh yeah.

• 31:26Speaker 05

And we used all the rooms there and the grounds, and it was like four or five week shoot, so super quick.

• 31:32Jessie Ware?

  Costumes were amazing.

• 31:33Speaker 05

  Costumes were so good.

• 31:35Jessie Ware?

I feel like Hero, the part is quite, you're quite restrained in it. You have to, it's like.

• 31:40Speaker 05

There's a lot of, like, internal.

• 31:41Jessie Ware?

  Exactly.

• 31:42Speaker 05

Observation going on. But I found it really fun. I've never really done any explicitly comedic roles before, so I, yeah, I kind of loved it.

• 31:50Jessie Ware?

  It was fab.

• 31:51Speaker 05

Thank you. It was a lot of fun to shoot. And it was really funny, cause I think when we were doing it. Like with a lot of indie films, you know, it really takes a village to pull it off. And you know, you have five weeks and all the budgets for everything like so tight. So it's always, you feel like you're, it's like a race against time to get everything done and everything's working against you.

• 32:09Jessie Ware?

  Totally.

• 32:12Speaker 05

Julia, the director, is just amazing.

• 32:14Jessie Ware?

She wrote it as well, didn't she?

• 32:16Speaker 05

  Yeah, she adapted it.

• 32:17Jessie Ware?

Yeah. Did you do any scenes with Charlie X yet?

• 32:19Speaker 05

  No.

• 32:20Jessie Ware?

  No.

• 32:20Speaker 05

Funny, because mostly the question I get asked is how was it working with Charlie?

• 32:24Jessie Ware?

And you're like, yeah, there was like no scenes. She was really good in it.

• 32:28Speaker 05

Yeah, she's great in it, yeah.

• 32:29Jessie Ware?

So, tell me, do you ever go for, have you ever been to Kudu? The South African place?

• 32:35Speaker 05

  I've never been to Kudu.

• 32:36Jessie Ware?

Okay, Kudu used to be in Peckham and then they've left us.

• 32:39Speaker 05

I know about this, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 32:40Jessie Ware?

They've left us from Aranabone. And it's doing, it's going really, really well though. We're thrilled for them. You should go.

• 32:46Speaker 05

It's a grill house. Oh, nice.

• 32:47Jessie Ware?

  Really? You should totally go.

• 32:49Speaker 05

  Okay, okay.

• 32:50Jessie Ware?

I mean, if you want to eat South African food.

• 32:51Speaker 05

Yeah, always. I'm really bad at eating out in London. I never.

• 32:56Jessie Ware?

  Really?

• 32:56Speaker 05

Yeah, hardly ever do. In Margate, I do a lot because everything's really close.

• 33:00Jessie Ware?

Oh, come on, let's give some shout outs to the Margate places.

• 33:03Speaker 05

  Oh, my god, okay.

• 33:03Jessie Ware?

  Angela's.

• 33:04Speaker 05

So many. Angela's is so good and Dory's, which is now actually moving.

• 33:07Jessie Ware?

  Dory's moved, no?

• 33:08Speaker 05

Yeah, it's about to move next to Angela's because I didn't realise, it's actually quite boring Margate gossip, but Dory's doesn't have a kitchen, so they were cooking everything.

• 33:18Jessie Ware?

Schleking and then moving, oh no.

• 33:19Speaker 05

Yeah, moving it over the road, wild.

• 33:22Speaker 05

Dory's and Angela's are great seafood. Sargasso is amazing for small plates. And Sargasso is the same people who do brawn.

• 33:29Jessie Ware?

Do you love the Italian? Potager.

• 33:32Speaker 05

Oh, my god, you know what? I've never been there. I know.

• 33:35Jessie Ware?

  Potager Caruso?

• 33:35Speaker 05

I've never been to Potager Caruso.

• 33:37Jessie Ware?

  Oh, it's lovely.

• 33:37Speaker 05

I know, I need to go.

• 33:38Jessie Ware?

  It's really lovely.

• 33:39Speaker 05

Tell you where I always go is High Dive or Dive.

• 33:42Jessie Ware?

Oh, I heard about this, yeah.

• 33:43Speaker 05

My friends Percy and Ben. And they started with Dive, which is like a little tiny place on the Harbour Arm and it's tacos and chaladas and stuff like that. And Casey's is so good and the most insane spicy margaritas, so good.

• 33:57Jessie Ware?

  Oh.

• 33:57Speaker 05

Do you like Mexican? I really do, yeah. So in LA, it's all. Yeah, I mean, the best. And then, yeah, they've moved up onto the high street, this place called High Dive, which is amazing. So good, High Dive, yeah. Do you swim? I do. Well, I've recently, they've got this thing in Margate called the sea salt or sea scrub sauna.

• 34:17Jessie Ware?

  I love it.

• 34:18Speaker 05

You've been, and you do the sauna and you can literally.

• 34:21Jessie Ware?

  They're so sweet there.

• 34:22Speaker 05

They're so sweet. And you've got these barrels with like cold water in it and you're right on the beach. And then you're in, one of the saunas is the wood one and one is electric and the electric one just has glass. You can just sit you in the sea. It's amazing. And the other day I was there and it was really windy and we were just watching these kite surfers and they must have been like super pro kite surfers. And they were doing all these flips and stuff over the tidal pool. It was like, I was like, wow.

• 34:45Speaker 04

So you don't run into the sea after your sauna?

• 34:50Speaker 05

  It looks so cold.

• 34:51Jessie Ware?

He did it and I just was like, I'll just go in the little.

• 34:55Speaker 05

Yeah, no, I mean, that is, I find that hard enough.

• 34:58Jessie Ware?

  I like the sauna bit.

• 34:59Speaker 05

  I love the sauna bit.

• 34:59Jessie Ware?

Love. I'm going to the sauna tomorrow, actually.

• 35:01Speaker 05

Also, you meet amazing people in it. If you do, most of it is like social sauna.

• 35:05Jessie Ware?

  I love chatting.

• 35:06Speaker 05

  You love, yeah.

• 35:07Jessie Ware?

And I have been told off for chatting before and I'm a bit like.

• 35:12Speaker 05

No, it's so nice. Love the chat. Yeah.

• 35:14Jessie Ware?

Also, it passes the time whilst you're sweating.

• 35:16Speaker 05

  Exactly.

• 35:17Jessie Ware?

We are gonna have a pod as well if you can fit it in.

• 35:19Speaker 05

  Oh my god, really? Yeah.

• 35:20Jessie Ware?

Yeah, and then he's made a dairy free lemon tart.

• 35:25Speaker 04

And I've got dairy free ice cream to have a bit.

• 35:29Jessie Ware?

Yeah. No, it's quite nice. That's glace, Swedish glace ice cream. Have you had it?

• 35:34Speaker 05

  I haven't had it.

• 35:35Jessie Ware?

  It's a good, it's a good alternative though.

• 35:37Speaker 05

It's just quite a new, my dairy thing's quite new, so I haven't really been out there trying all the bits.

• 35:41Jessie Ware?

No, it's, I feel like have a little go on it and see how you feel.

• 35:46Speaker 04

How long were you in L A for?

• 35:47Speaker 05

  Three days.

• 35:48Speaker 04

Oh, so you're not really settled into the time there?

• 35:52Speaker 05

Mm-hmm. No. And I was really, I was using the Dramamine every night. It's my new thing.

• 35:58Jessie Ware?

  It's seasick.

• 35:59Speaker 05

It's seasickness, but it has a drowsiness thing, like when you take antihistamine. And I weirdly just found that it worked.

• 36:05Speaker 04

I think I'm gonna try and get it.

• 36:06Speaker 05

It's because I was, you know, I went to New York last year in November and had got the worst food poisoning from the plane.

• 36:13Jessie Ware?

  Oh, no.

• 36:14Speaker 05

Couldn't get out of bed for like four days.

• 36:16Jessie Ware?

  What did you eat?

• 36:17Speaker 05

I don't, I think the Christmas dinner, which to be fair, that's on me. It is just on me. And I think I had like salmon to start and I was like, what are you doing? But um. But I discovered it then because I was really nauseous. So I took Dramamine and then it also just put like, I just. Put me to sleep, which is great. Sorry, look at that.

• 36:35Speaker 04

  Well, let's see.

• 36:37Speaker 05

You know what, if you did, Lenny, if you did this on, if you did this on Bake Off. That would be a, that would be a handshake.

• 36:42Speaker 04

Hollywood said if I went on, he'd make sure I'd win.

• 36:46Speaker 05

  I'm completely sure.

• 36:47Speaker 04

So it's made with coconut oil, some coconut, some flour.

• 36:52Jessie Ware?

  Oh, it's good, Mum.

• 36:53Speaker 05

  It's beautiful.

• 36:54Speaker 04

It's, but you don't roll it out, you have to press it in. She's probably slightly thicker than I would have cooked.

• 37:02Speaker 05

Wow, oh my god, look at that texture.

• 37:04Jessie Ware?

Well, this is actually perfect that you're dairy free. I've got to sing later, so this is great, actually.

• 37:08Speaker 04

Actually, I have to say, I didn't put the corn flour in by accident.

• 37:13Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 37:13Speaker 04

And I think it's still got a nice little wobble there.

• 37:16Speaker 05

  It's got a great wobble.

• 37:18Speaker 04

  What do you think?

• 37:19Speaker 05

  Mm-hmm.

• 37:20Jessie Ware?

  Mm-hmm. I don't miss.

• 37:21Speaker 05

  Oh my god.

• 37:22Jessie Ware?

  I'm not missing.

• 37:23Speaker 05

  You wouldn't know.

• 37:25Jessie Ware?

  You're not missing.

• 37:26Speaker 05

  You wouldn't know.

• 37:27Jessie Ware?

  That's great, Mum.

• 37:28Speaker 05

  Mmm.

• 37:29Jessie Ware?

  Oh, the coconut just hit.

• 37:31Speaker 05

  It's really good. I'm getting a coconut.

• 37:33Speaker 04

Wouldn't know that was dairy free.

• 37:35Speaker 05

  You would not know.

• 37:36Jessie Ware?

  Great, Mum.

• 37:36Speaker 05

Also, the coconut and lemon is in itself a great mix.

• 37:39Jessie Ware?

Tell me more about these summers in France. When you had, you used to go to France a lot as a child.

• 37:47Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 37:47Jessie Ware?

And you kind of grew up with the same people. We have a similar thing where we go to Greece every year and kind of. Got drunk there for the first time, you know.

• 37:54Speaker 05

Oh my god, it was the best. It's like that kind of thing where. I think back and I'm like, wow, I feel like that's the place I really grew up. Yeah, so this, it was in the Limousin.

• 38:03Jessie Ware?

  Where is that?

• 38:05Speaker 05

I have no idea. In the middle?

• 38:07Jessie Ware?

When I thought, when I was reading it, I thought it was like you took a limousine there.

• 38:10Speaker 05

That's so funny. Can you imagine? I used to take a limo. No, we would drive, my mum and my brothers would drive. I think it's like down from Paris, I should know this. It's where like, Le Moje, I think that's where it is.

• 38:23Jessie Ware?

Do you know in the west?

• 38:24Speaker 05

Southwest. So my mum, it was just me and my mum and my brothers and we would go every summer. For about five or six years, I think. From when I was about maybe twelve or thirteen to when I was about seventeen, eighteen. And she found this farm, which was owned by this Scottish family. Who'd moved there and they had some teepees on the farm that they would, sort of, you could stay in. And the very first time we went there, we happened to go with two families with kids around the same age. And then we all got on and the family who owned the farm, Paula and Graham, had got about like five or six kids across all age groups. And I actually recently found a photo of all of us and there must have been about fifteen, sixteen of us kids and we lined up in high order and it was literally like this. There was almost someone in every single age group.

• 39:09Speaker 05

And it was fantastic and we just, we ate amazing food. Cooked pizzas outside and built fires and eventually we ended up going there so much that we would end up, Graham, who ran the farm with Paula, they would both say, you know, you've, you're coming here every summer, you've got to work now. So we would start working on the farm with them.

• 39:30Jessie Ware?

  That was great.

• 39:30Speaker 05

Which was great. I mean, doing the stuff that they allowed us to do, which was like picking vegetables and stuff. But I did go back for lambing season one year in Easter and that was so fun.

• 39:40Jessie Ware?

  Oh, how old were you?

• 39:42Speaker 05

When I did the lambing season, I think I must have been seventeen, maybe.

• 39:47Jessie Ware?

When was the last time you went?

• 39:49Speaker 05

Probably that time, I think, because then they moved to New Zealand and they now, they now, they're now farming in New Zealand, yeah. So it all sort of moved on, but, um, which is sad, but it was the best time, like such freedom.

• 40:04Jessie Ware?

You, you, you're quite like hardy, aren't you? Like I imagine if you like camping.

• 40:08Speaker 05

  I really like camping.

• 40:09Jessie Ware?

Yeah, like, and you still like camping, don't you?

• 40:12Speaker 05

  Camping, yeah.

• 40:13Jessie Ware?

Canopian Stars is a good website.

• 40:15Speaker 05

  Canopian Stars?

• 40:16Jessie Ware?

  It is very good.

• 40:17Speaker 05

Can we give a massive shout out to Canopian Stars? Have you used it?

• 40:19Jessie Ware?

  I mean, I dabbled, babe.

• 40:21Speaker 05

  You dabbled, okay.

• 40:21Jessie Ware?

I'm a bit more Jewish princess than, uh, Canopian Stars. But I have, and I think they've got completely charming. Look, I'm more like, I can do like. A log cabin. And I will do camping and I don't wanna deny my children that experience, cause this is like, you know. Mum, do you felt I denied you? You definitely denied us. Do you feel you missed out? I feel like I'm more of a princess. Yeah. And I feel like I would like to know how to, I just learnt how to use my log burner. Cause I couldn't light a fire. Do you know, I'm quite useless. Well, I could light a fire. You should have gone to guides. Oh no. Girl guides, no thanks. I'd have woodcraft folk instead. Teach you how to.

• 41:03Jessie Ware?

Ish kish kosh, we are one blood, you and I, we'll go strong and like the pine tree or something. Yeah, it was like the hippie. Socialists. Fantastic, great. It was quite fun. Tell me about this game of games that you created with Josh O'Connor.

• 41:15Speaker 05

Oh my god, it's so good.

• 41:18Jessie Ware?

  You created a game?

• 41:19Speaker 05

We created a game, a game of games.

• 41:20Jessie Ware?

  And is it like sold?

• 41:22Speaker 05

No, it's not, but it should be.

• 41:24Jessie Ware?

  Babe?

• 41:25Speaker 05

  Patent it.

• 41:26Jessie Ware?

Yes. Okay, tell me about game of games that you created with Josh O'Connor.

• 41:30Speaker 05

  So it's a Capricorn game.

• 41:31Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 41:31Speaker 05

So if we were playing, the basic, the idea is basically to find the last supper, right? The ultimate meal.

• 41:38Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 41:38Speaker 05

Of everyone, slash in the world.

• 41:40Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 41:41Speaker 05

So then, and it's like a process of elimination. So there are like several rounds.

• 41:46Jessie Ware?

  Yeah. So it's a tournament?

• 41:48Speaker 05

It's a tournament, it's a food tournament. And then those two play each other. So say we were gonna do like two rounds and it would be on, let's say, breakfast foods. So we're establishing the best breakfast food. I would maybe pitch like, I'm a big eggs person.

• 42:03Jessie Ware?

  Me too.

• 42:04Speaker 05

So I would say like the perfect boiled egg with soldiers, maybe with a bit of marmite on the soldiers.

• 42:10Jessie Ware?

  Definitely.

• 42:10Speaker 05

If you're into that. And then maybe you would say versus, and then you.

• 42:15Jessie Ware?

No, scrambled egg. Right. No, I mean, you've just chosen quite my ideal. Okay, I'm gonna go versus a fried egg in butter with sage.

• 42:26Speaker 05

  Whoa.

• 42:27Jessie Ware?

  On fresh sourdough.

• 42:29Speaker 05

So now, we decide. We all go round and vote for which one we would choose.

• 42:34Jessie Ware?

But are you supposed to like wow people? That's the thing. Am I going like parata with like a chutney and aubergine pickle? And lime pickle?

• 42:42Speaker 05

So the thing, the fun thing is it got to the point where people like standing up and painting a whole picture. And then we had to establish some boundaries because people were saying like, you know, it's like the morning after you've met the love of your life and you're like the like sun is breaking in through the windows and so all right.

• 42:56Jessie Ware?

You're like methoding, you're like, you need to do like, you could go into different categories. You could go beyond food.

• 43:01Speaker 05

You could, we did, we did.

• 43:02Jessie Ware?

  Go holidays.

• 43:03Speaker 05

We did Christmas Day. So the best part of Christmas Day we did. I remember people got really into that, like different, everyone's different traditions and stuff.

• 43:09Jessie Ware?

You sound really fun to have at a dinner party.

• 43:11Speaker 05

Oh, thank, I do love a game.

• 43:12Jessie Ware?

Do you go, guys? It's time for game of games.

• 43:16Speaker 05

It's time for game of games. Or any game, to be honest.

• 43:18Jessie Ware?

Before we let you go. You know, you were kind of talking about this at the beginning, but nostalgic, a nostalgic taste that can transport you back somewhere. Where are we gonna go for that?

• 43:29Speaker 05

Okay, nostalgic taste is an oat crunchy.

• 43:34Jessie Ware?

  Oat crunchy?

• 43:35Speaker 05

  Yeah, which is a.

• 43:36Jessie Ware?

  Like a flapjack?

• 43:37Speaker 05

Well, it is something my aunt used to make in South Africa. Every time we'd go, she'd bring me a tin of oat crunchies. And they're like a flapjack, but it's more, they're hard, they're harder, they're crunchier than a flapjack. And they're really good, like golden syrupy oaty.

• 43:54Jessie Ware?

They've got a custard in the middle, like a filling.

• 43:56Speaker 05

Literally just an oat. Like a little rectangle of oat and they're crunchy and yeah, so good.

• 44:01Jessie Ware?

What about veneers? That's all I'd worry about.

• 44:05Speaker 05

  Is the teeth.

• 44:06Jessie Ware?

  Thing off.

• 44:08Speaker 05

I broke, I broke my tooth in an M and M once.

• 44:10Jessie Ware?

  Oh, did you?

• 44:11Speaker 05

  Yeah, peanut M and M.

• 44:12Jessie Ware?

  Which tooth?

• 44:14Speaker 05

  One of the back ones.

• 44:14Jessie Ware?

  Oh, thank God.

• 44:15Speaker 05

  Yeah, I know.

• 44:16Jessie Ware?

You need to pick that up, darling.

• 44:18Speaker 05

I know, I'm sorry, I just love it. I've been trying.

• 44:20Jessie Ware?

Such a hard, I'm sorry it's so hard.

• 44:22Speaker 05

No. When we were younger, my mum invented a scary woman called Lady Pilkington Smythe. And mum would, would always be like, if we didn't sit upright at the table.

• 44:31Jessie Ware?

  Oh.

• 44:32Speaker 05

Or like eat properly that she was gonna come tell us off.

• 44:35Jessie Ware?

  Lady Pilkington Smythe?

• 44:37Speaker 05

  Yeah, yeah.

• 44:39Jessie Ware?

And you believed it? She's probably in Bridgerton this year.

• 44:42Speaker 05

  I know.

• 44:44Speaker 05

Well, she will be next season.

• 44:45Jessie Ware?

I love the imagination of your mum.

• 44:48Speaker 05

Well, my mum is like the sweetest, loveliest person ever and kind of incapable of telling us off. So she had to create an alter ego.

• 44:55Jessie Ware?

Oh, we could, I love that. Your own Mr. Darcy, who was your favourite?

• 45:01Speaker 05

Out of the ones that have been, Matthew, I think.

• 45:04Speaker 04

  Do you?

• 45:05Speaker 05

  Hmm.

• 45:05Speaker 04

Not Colin coming out of the river?

• 45:08Jessie Ware?

  Wasn't that Matthew?

• 45:10Speaker 04

No, Colin Firth was the one that came out with the wet.

• 45:12Speaker 05

The hand, tell me about the hand. You know, the shot of the hand, when he helps her into the carriage? And then there's a close up of his hand and he like shakes it out.

• 45:22Speaker 04

Oh no, I can't remember that.

• 45:23Speaker 05

  It's so iconic and.

• 45:25Speaker 04

Colin Firth came out of the water.

• 45:27Jessie Ware?

Yeah, I think Matthew did too, didn't he? I'm sure Jack does too.

• 45:31Speaker 05

I don't think Matthew came out of the water, didn't they? They have the scene where they're like drenched in the rain.

• 45:36Speaker 04

  Oh, yeah.

• 45:36Jessie Ware?

Who was the Elizabeth, was it Jennifer?

• 45:39Speaker 04

  Earl.

• 45:40Speaker 05

  Earl, yeah.

• 45:41Jessie Ware?

Was she with Colin or, okay?

• 45:43Speaker 05

  And Kira was with Matthew.

• 45:45Speaker 04

  Oh, yeah.

• 45:46Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 45:46Speaker 04

So you're going to be this new couple.

• 45:49Speaker 05

  I know.

• 45:49Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 45:50Speaker 05

It's exciting, God, I hope people like us.

• 45:52Speaker 04

Who's your favourite Elizabeth Bennet? Oh, Emma Corrin, God.

• 45:57Jessie Ware?

Good luck with everything. It's so exciting seeing you on screen and doing so much. Are you going to do West End or Broadway anytime soon again?

• 46:04Speaker 05

Yeah. Did you love theatre? Yeah, it's like where I started, so it always feels like coming home a bit, yeah.

• 46:10Jessie Ware?

Um, I hope you get some rest.

• 46:11Speaker 05

Thank you. Thank you for feeding me such a good meal.

• 46:15Speaker 04

Darling, darling, off the street from here, I know.

• 46:17Speaker 05

Yeah. I want to do this every time I get off a plane.

• 46:19Jessie Ware?

You're welcome anytime, Emma. And nice summer love to Margot.

• 46:23Speaker 05

  Thank you.

• 46:38Jessie Ware?

Emma Corrin, I'd quite like to have their number and make friends because they were so lovely.

• 46:44Speaker 04

What a gorgeous person, very appreciative.

• 46:47Jessie Ware?

Yeah, they were so lovely and that lemon tart was amazing.

• 46:51Speaker 04

  Did you like it?

• 46:52Jessie Ware?

  I really liked it.

• 46:53Speaker 04

  Oh, good darling.

• 46:54Jessie Ware?

  It was great.

• 46:55Speaker 04

Hey, we're Nick and Jack, hosts of The Best One Yet. Behind every episode, there's research, emails, spreadsheets, and our shared Google Doc, the headline hammer. With Google Workspace with Gemini, Google's AI is built right into the premium versions of tools we already use, like Gmail, Docs, and Sheets. No new tools or extra logins, just personalized AI for the way we work. That means less time on the work around the work and more time finding the stories worth talking about. Get AI tools for work.
