• 1:48Fortune Feimster?

  Pretty little episode.

• 1:50Tig Notaro?

Hi, it is your dearest friend in the entire world, Tig Notaro, sitting here with...

• 1:56Fortune Feimster?

Your other friend that's the most important in the entire world, is that what you said?

• 2:02Tig Notaro?

  No, it's not.

• 2:02Fortune Feimster?

  Fortune Beamster!

• 2:04Tig Notaro?

Hi, Fortune, you are the most important person in my life.

• 2:09Fortune Feimster?

  Oh, you stop.

• 2:12Fortune Feimster?

  And I don't believe you.

• 2:14Tig Notaro?

  I don't either.

• 2:17Tig Notaro?

  I'll be honest, I don't believe that.

• 2:19Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 2:20Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 2:21Fortune Feimster?

You know what's so funny is the last time we did one of these, it was your folks birthday. Well, tomorrow is my mom's birthday.

• 2:30Tig Notaro?

  Really?

• 2:31Fortune Feimster?

I mean, I know that's kind of a stretch, but in the same vein, you know what I mean?

• 2:35Tig Notaro?

Sure, sure. And, and would old Ginge mind telling us how old?

• 2:42Fortune Feimster?

This is a big one, eighty.

• 2:45Tig Notaro?

  Eighty?

• 2:46Fortune Feimster?

  I can't, I can't, I truly cannot believe it.

• 2:49Tig Notaro?

Wow, she looks really good for eighty.

• 2:52Fortune Feimster?

  Very good.

• 2:54Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 2:54Fortune Feimster?

It's just, yeah, I, eighty years old, that just doesn't seem, I'm glad she's here. Listen, I'll take it, I'm grateful.

• 3:02Tig Notaro?

And she, she's active, heading out, sitting on benches and stuff?

• 3:06Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, yeah, she's, she's doing, doing pretty good. We're gonna have a big party for her. I, I'm filming right now, so I, I wanted to do it around this time, but it just will be easier once I wrap. So we're gonna, she was fine to wait till March.

• 3:23Tig Notaro?

  Oh, okay.

• 3:24Fortune Feimster?

We are gonna have a little party for her, for some of her good friends. And mostly family, but just.

• 3:32Tig Notaro?

When in March? Because if it lands on my birthday, maybe we could do a double.

• 3:37Fortune Feimster?

You're gonna come to Belmont, North Carolina and celebrate?

• 3:40Tig Notaro?

  That I will.

• 3:41Fortune Feimster?

  Late March.

• 3:42Tig Notaro?

That's when my birthday is, March 24th.

• 3:45Fortune Feimster?

Oh, it's not, it's not that date, but close.

• 3:47Tig Notaro?

Oh, sure. Twenty eight? I, twenty eighth?

• 3:51Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 3:52Tig Notaro?

I can stick around, we could do it right in the middle. Yeah, we could do the twenty sixth, right in between.

• 3:58Fortune Feimster?

I would love for you two to have a joint birthday party, that would be hilarious.

• 4:01Tig Notaro?

I'm sure we have the same friend group.

• 4:03Fortune Feimster?

  Totally the same friends.

• 4:06Tig Notaro?

What are her friends like? Are they just like ginger?

• 4:09Fortune Feimster?

Um, yeah, they're fun. There's a whole group of them called the Yaya's. And they get together a couple of times a month for like lunch or. Whatever. They they celebrate the birthdays of the month. We'll all celebrate with one meal.

• 4:26Tig Notaro?

And how do they know each other?

• 4:27Fortune Feimster?

Years and years of just growing up in in Belmont. And I mean, they've been a friend group for decades now.

• 4:34Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 4:35Fortune Feimster?

And I a lot of their, a lot of us, some of them had kids all the same age. So my friends are the in that friend, my my friends moms are in that mom group. And and then they have their own, then they branch out and do stuff. You know, individually with little groups.

• 4:53Tig Notaro?

Yeah. Are you tight with the friend, the kids of the friends?

• 4:59Fortune Feimster?

I was growing up. I just don't see people as much, you know, but if I saw them, it would be great to see them. But, you know, they're they're, it's a wonderful friend group. I'm so glad she has them. I

• 5:10Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 5:10Fortune Feimster?

It's funny, a couple, gosh, about, I want to say, seven, six, seven years ago, I filmed this thing for Comedy Central.

• 5:17Tig Notaro?

  Congrats.

• 5:18Fortune Feimster?

In my hometown. And they came and they had my moms, the yayas come over and a lot of that footage got cut in this thing, but I would so wish I had it because they, it was so great seeing her friends all together and

• 5:36Tig Notaro?

I wonder if you could get in touch and have someone dig it up. I bet it's somewhere.

• 5:41Fortune Feimster?

Maybe. And funny enough, the cameraman for that that project was at a screening I went to of of your documentary.

• 5:49Tig Notaro?

  Really?

• 5:50Fortune Feimster?

Yeah. And I hadn't seen him since. And he was there with my mom filming all their friends. It was really a special experience. So

• 5:59Tig Notaro?

  That's amazing.

• 6:00Fortune Feimster?

Yeah. But yeah, I'm glad she has those those friends. They all.

• 6:05Tig Notaro?

Yeah, I'm telling you, I, this is, this is, this is your job right now, is you got to reach out to Comedy Central and see if there's any way to track that footage down.

• 6:16Fortune Feimster?

  Okay.

• 6:16Tig Notaro?

You will be so glad you did that, Fortune.

• 6:20Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, cuz they were all on that day, just like yapping and cutting each other off and making jokes. And it was really sweet.

• 6:28Tig Notaro?

And your, your reps can help you hunt that down? You gotta do it. It'd be one day of work for you to do.

• 6:34Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 6:35Tig Notaro?

  You know, phone calls, emails.

• 6:37Fortune Feimster?

I should get a lot of that footage cuz it was all about me and my mom.

• 6:40Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 6:41Fortune Feimster?

And there, I'm sure we got some cool stuff that, and like, when they aired it, it was supposed to be about comedians and their moms, but they barely showed anything that they filmed. It was very odd. They showed more, they showed more stuff of me on stage than they did of the footage in my hometown.

• 7:02Tig Notaro?

  Interesting.

• 7:02Fortune Feimster?

I know. And, and so we, I have all this probably pretty great footage of the two of us that I would like to get a lot of it. I don't know how that works, but I'll have them look into it.

• 7:12Tig Notaro?

  Yeah, yes, you will.

• 7:13Fortune Feimster?

  Mm hmm.

• 7:14Tig Notaro?

  That's exciting.

• 7:15Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah. So shout out Ginge.

• 7:18Tig Notaro?

Yeah, the Yaya's, Fortune Feimster and the Yaya's is the band name.

• 7:23Fortune Feimster?

  That's right.

• 7:28Fortune Feimster?

  Well, that's all I got.

• 7:30Tig Notaro?

Well, let's get into our questions then.

• 7:34Speaker 04

Hi handsome, this is Hope calling from Georgia. First of all, thank you so much for the endless entertainment. Um, one of the things I love to do besides listen to your podcast is do road trips and stop at weird roadside attractions. Like, I don't know, like largest ball of yarn, or I recently went to see a peanut shaped like Jimmy Carter. Um, my question is, if you had to design a new roadside attraction, and I know I'm gonna get pushed back on the had to, like why you have to, so let's say you are gonna earn money for this that goes to charity, um, charity of your choice, what roadside attraction would you design?

• 8:18Speaker 04

And tell me a little bit about it.

• 8:20Fortune Feimster?

Well, have you ever, have you ever been to one of those random roadside things?

• 8:25Tig Notaro?

Yeah, I think I've seen the ball of yarn or the rubber bands or whatever.

• 8:29Fortune Feimster?

Mm hmm. I stopped into, I think it was Arlington, Texas. They have a bunch of like Cadillacs in the ground, like standing up.

• 8:40Fortune Feimster?

It was kind of crazy. I don't know why, but it's there.

• 8:45Tig Notaro?

  Okay.

• 8:46Fortune Feimster?

  The end.

• 8:48Tig Notaro?

I think I would personally, like just right out of the gate, what I would love to see is just like a huge animal sanctuary adoption place where you're on the road, you're exhausted. And I'm talking a big one, like where you pull off the side of the road and you just pet kittens and dogs and old grandpa animals. And just like, you know, you're just like, all right, that was fun, but also I'm going to take mittens with me. And I mean, like a circus of animals out there.

• 9:30Fortune Feimster?

But they're all treated very well and.

• 9:32Tig Notaro?

Oh, well, of course, I'm not going to have a roadside attraction where animals are getting abused.

• 9:37Fortune Feimster?

That's right. I'm just saying, this is like the place to go. It's like a spa here.

• 9:42Tig Notaro?

  Yeah, yeah, for sure.

• 9:45Fortune Feimster?

But they also, but you're, there's so many that they, they need home, forever homes.

• 9:50Tig Notaro?

Yes. And if you can't adopt them though, it's just so fun to like run around with cows.

• 10:01Fortune Feimster?

Love a cow. That sounds great.

• 10:04Tig Notaro?

I just saw a very long haired cow.

• 10:07Fortune Feimster?

  Really?

• 10:08Tig Notaro?

Like flowing in the wind hair.

• 10:10Fortune Feimster?

  Oh.

• 10:11Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 10:11Fortune Feimster?

I don't see many of those.

• 10:13Tig Notaro?

I've never seen one until that. Yeah. But, um, I don't know. I just, that would be a sight for sore eyes. If you're like on the road for days and hours and weeks.

• 10:26Fortune Feimster?

Well, I, you know, now that I'm a Disney beaver, I would have said I would have some kind of beaver attraction, but Buc-E's kind of cornered the market on that. They, uh, beat me to the punch. Those are, have you been to a Buc-E's?

• 10:42Tig Notaro?

I have. And what is your feeling about Buc-E's?

• 10:46Fortune Feimster?

  They're ginormous.

• 10:47Tig Notaro?

Well, I know their size, but what was your feeling?

• 10:49Fortune Feimster?

I mean, you know, the, I like the novelty of it. You go in there and hear them yelling about brisket sandwiches and. Pick out a million different versions of beef jerky or fudge. It's a, it's a lot, though. You know, I like to get in and get out. I don't go lollygagging.

• 11:08Tig Notaro?

Well, here's my thing. I'm very confused about. Everyone, like people's obsession with Buc-Ee's. Like, I don't, I don't, I don't get it. I'm just like, right, there's gas here and then there's a place where you can buy a bunch of stuff.

• 11:24Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 11:25Tig Notaro?

Who cares? Like, why is everyone buying shirts about it and like talking to friends? And you gotta go to Buc-Ee's and oh my God, you go to Buc-Ee's and like.

• 11:36Fortune Feimster?

  I don't think you're the target audience.

• 11:38Tig Notaro?

No, I'm not. And I'm not the target audience that talk to me about Buc-Ee's.

• 11:43Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, well, because they're going in there for brisket and jerky and those aren't your things. Already they've lost you.

• 11:48Tig Notaro?

Even if they had vegan brisket and jerky all down the aisles, the whole hype around it.

• 11:56Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 11:57Tig Notaro?

  I'm like, who cares?

• 12:00Fortune Feimster?

Who cares? Well, I'll tell you something they did, two things they did that were interesting to market.

• 12:07Tig Notaro?

This isn't anti-Buc-Ee's. This is anti the people freaking out about Buc-Ee's.

• 12:13Fortune Feimster?

I hear you, but I am going to highlight two things that people do like about it. One, they don't allow any of those big transfer trucks.

• 12:21Tig Notaro?

  Okay.

• 12:22Fortune Feimster?

And, you know, those can get a little intimidating to drive around at gas stations on the road. So people are kind of into that, that they're, they don't allow that.

• 12:30Tig Notaro?

That's not what I'm talking about.

• 12:32Fortune Feimster?

Well, the other thing they did is they catered to women, which is unusual. By they, their marketing plan was.

• 12:43Tig Notaro?

  Clean bathrooms.

• 12:43Fortune Feimster?

Women like clean bathrooms. And I will say their bathrooms are unbelievable.

• 12:49Tig Notaro?

I understand this. I know all this. I'm all for Buc-E's.

• 12:54Fortune Feimster?

  All right.

• 12:54Tig Notaro?

I'm not all for the people that are acting like,

• 12:58Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 12:59Tig Notaro?

this is some, like, like, we need merchandise and we need to tell everyone alive how incredible Buc-E's.

• 13:08Fortune Feimster?

Well, I think it's like one of those things that it just kind of becomes part of the, like, culture, how people wear like Waffle House t-shirts, you know? I don't know. It just becomes like.

• 13:18Tig Notaro?

Yeah, I feel like Buc-E's is a whole different thing.

• 13:20Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, well, it's kind of like, yeah, it's like a circus. I don't know.

• 13:24Tig Notaro?

  I don't know.

• 13:25Fortune Feimster?

  Well.

• 13:26Tig Notaro?

I think it's also kind of my response when, what was that frozen yogurt place everyone went nuts about?

• 13:33Fortune Feimster?

  Oh, Pinkberry or?

• 13:35Tig Notaro?

Yeah, Pinkberry. And then like the donut place that everyone was going nuts about.

• 13:41Fortune Feimster?

  All the hubbub.

• 13:42Tig Notaro?

I know. I'm just like, go in, get your donut, go and get your jerky, go get your gas.

• 13:47Fortune Feimster?

  Just cork it. Cork it.

• 13:50Tig Notaro?

  Quit acting like a nerd.

• 13:52Fortune Feimster?

  Shut your mouth.

• 13:53Tig Notaro?

About a gas station. I mean, get a life. Okay, I'm sorry. I didn't know I had that much pent up anger around it.

• 14:03Fortune Feimster?

I'm glad you got it out.

• 14:04Tig Notaro?

  Me too.

• 14:05Fortune Feimster?

Phew, it's been a long time coming.

• 14:12Tig Notaro?

Was that a question we had? What, like, why am I talking about Buc-E's?

• 14:16Fortune Feimster?

By saying they already did what I would do, which would be a Beaver place.

• 14:21Tig Notaro?

  Oh, roadside attraction, right?

• 14:24Fortune Feimster?

I don't really have, other than that, I don't, I mean, I don't have anything random. I just want food. Like, I just want a bunch of pastries and pies.

• 14:32Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 14:33Fortune Feimster?

You know, and then, and then maybe some lesbian music playing, like Melissa Etheridge or something.

• 14:43Tig Notaro?

All right. Well, does Hope have an answer?

• 14:47Fortune Feimster?

  Ah.

• 14:49Tig Notaro?

  Come to my bookies.

• 14:52Fortune Feimster?

  Go get your pies.

• 14:55Speaker 04

The roadside attraction I would design, it would be like a giant TV with like a row of giant books on top. And then like inside, you would see like weird artifacts that were like supposedly from big movies. But like, you know, for sure, they're just like totally made up. Or like, you know, like a gum wrapper found on the set of Scream, something like that. Thank you.

• 15:17Tig Notaro?

Okay, okay. I like it. I like it, Hope. We like it, Hope. We like it and we like you, Hope. And we like when people send in questions and answers and woo's the next one.

• 15:30Fortune Feimster?

  Woo.

• 15:31Tig Notaro?

  Woo's the next one.

• 15:33Speaker 05

Hi, handsome pod. My name is Andy. I'm from Houston, Texas. So my question to you is, I have a friend that I've been friends with for years and I love her. She's a very, very kind, heart-hearted person. She's the embodiment of treat how people, how you want to be treated. My issue is, is that she tends to tell, shall we say, tall tales. And she does this a lot. So much so that I find myself kind of zoning out when she's telling me tall tales. My question to you guys is, what should I do about this? Should I call her out? Should I go along with it?

• 16:15Speaker 05

Should I subtly let her know that I don't really believe what she's telling me? How would you guys address this? Well, I absolutely love the pod. It was something I feel like we desperately need in these times. You guys are my favorite silly.

• 16:31Fortune Feimster?

Oh, thanks. Oh, finally some advice.

• 16:35Tig Notaro?

Well, first of all, I don't believe that she has friends that lie to her.

• 16:39Fortune Feimster?

No. I don't know. It doesn't sound like the friends.

• 16:43Tig Notaro?

I was being funny. I was acting like she's a liar too.

• 16:46Fortune Feimster?

Oh, I get it. I get it. I get it. Do you think the people that, because I know some people that exaggerate like that. Do you think they realize they're doing that?

• 16:56Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 16:57Fortune Feimster?

  Really?

• 16:57Tig Notaro?

  Yes. Yes, I do.

• 16:59Fortune Feimster?

Have you, have you encountered this in your own life where you've had to say something to someone?

• 17:04Tig Notaro?

  Um, yes.

• 17:07Fortune Feimster?

But and you did, and you did say something?

• 17:09Tig Notaro?

  Yes.

• 17:10Fortune Feimster?

Yeah. Well, you're pretty straightforward like that.

• 17:14Tig Notaro?

Yeah, but I'm not doing it in a like, you're lying to me.

• 17:18Fortune Feimster?

  Right.

• 17:18Tig Notaro?

I've done it more in a, in a way of like, hold on a minute.

• 17:24Fortune Feimster?

  Right.

• 17:24Tig Notaro?

You know, where I'll be like, back up. You're, I need clarity here. I need clarity. You're telling me that this, this and this happened.

• 17:34Fortune Feimster?

  Uh huh.

• 17:35Tig Notaro?

Or they'll kind of big talk like, oh, if this happened, I would just do this. And then I'm like, would, I'm sorry, but would you really just do, you know what I'm saying?

• 17:48Fortune Feimster?

  Uh huh.

• 17:49Tig Notaro?

The other thing, and I feel like I've talked about it on this is, on this show is, um, there was this guy. Um, and believe it or not, before I knew I was gay, um, he was pursuing me.

• 18:03Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah, he was.

• 18:04Tig Notaro?

He was calling and he was, I mean, lying his face off.

• 18:11Fortune Feimster?

  Really?

• 18:12Tig Notaro?

  Oh, my God.

• 18:13Fortune Feimster?

  And you could tell?

• 18:15Tig Notaro?

It was like the craziest lies every time he could, and I remember, I actually knew him.

• 18:22Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 18:22Tig Notaro?

From long ago, and we ran into each other as, as adults. And I remembered it about him as a kid, where I was like, this guy.

• 18:32Fortune Feimster?

  Right.

• 18:33Tig Notaro?

So as an adult, I'm like, wow, he's still doing this, but it's like on a bigger scale.

• 18:40Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 18:40Tig Notaro?

And he was clearly trying to do it to impress me. And the last time I ever heard of, ever heard from him, he lied to me. Like, of course, I don't have proof.

• 18:52Fortune Feimster?

  Mm hmm.

• 18:53Tig Notaro?

But I know he lied to me.

• 18:55Fortune Feimster?

You just have that, you can kind of tell when someone's like.

• 18:58Tig Notaro?

Let me tell you what he, let me tell you what he told me.

• 19:02Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 19:02Tig Notaro?

And this was, I was so irritated and like, this is before caller ID and I would never know it was him. And I'd pick up and I'd be like, oh, Billy. And, um, and one, and his favorite band was R E M.

• 19:15Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 19:16Tig Notaro?

Loved R E M. Well, he calls me and what do you know? He's backstage at R E M. Yeah, he's hanging out with them. But you know what? He took a beat and he went to the payphone to call me.

• 19:28Fortune Feimster?

  Right.

• 19:29Tig Notaro?

  To just chat.

• 19:30Fortune Feimster?

I'm having the time of my life.

• 19:31Tig Notaro?

He's having the time of his life.

• 19:33Fortune Feimster?

  Gotta go call Tig.

• 19:34Tig Notaro?

Gotta step away. Not even just enjoy the time of my life, but I need to go call Tig from the payphone. Long distance.

• 19:42Fortune Feimster?

Long distance. A collect call, they called those.

• 19:45Tig Notaro?

It wasn't collect. He paid. He paid.

• 19:48Fortune Feimster?

  Oh, okay.

• 19:49Tig Notaro?

And so anyway, after, I was sitting there rolling my eyes so irritated that this guy, like, you think I'm, like, on what planet did you end up backstage at your favorite bands?

• 20:05Fortune Feimster?

  Right.

• 20:06Tig Notaro?

And of course, I understand it happens, but this was just, it was par for the course of this guy. And I'm sitting, I finally come up, after we get off the phone, I come up with the perfect thing to say to a liar.

• 20:21Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 20:22Tig Notaro?

But I never heard from him again. And what I should have said to him, when he was telling me he was backstage partying with R E M, I should have said, "Me too."

• 20:36Fortune Feimster?

  That is funny.

• 20:37Tig Notaro?

That, when it hit me, I was like, that is the best thing to say to a liar, is just tell them you're doing the same thing. Like, oh my God.

• 20:45Fortune Feimster?

  Me too.

• 20:46Tig Notaro?

You're backstage? I'm backstage at R E M too. Where do you want to meet? Cause like, he's not gonna call me a liar.

• 20:53Fortune Feimster?

  Right.

• 20:54Tig Notaro?

He's probably gonna hang up the phone.

• 20:56Fortune Feimster?

That's so funny. I've never even occurred, that never even occurred to me.

• 21:01Tig Notaro?

It never occurred to me either, but he drove me so crazy.

• 21:05Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 21:05Tig Notaro?

Drove me so crazy. So yeah, that is, those are different levels of confronting a liar, where it's like, hold on, back up. I need clarity.

• 21:17Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 21:17Tig Notaro?

You know, and kind of get into it, make him a little nervous and have him explain themselves. Cause if you're not lying and somebody says, "Back up, I need clarity."

• 21:27Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 21:28Tig Notaro?

You don't take that personally. No big deal. I'll give you all the clarity you want.

• 21:32Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 21:32Tig Notaro?

And then you have some unhinged lunatic that is like, "I landed a 747 on a freeway." And you're like, "Oh yeah, me too. What was your experience like doing that?" It is the best feeling.

• 21:48Fortune Feimster?

  That is pretty funny.

• 21:50Tig Notaro?

  So.

• 21:50Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, I like something like that. I don't recommend just like calling, being like, you're lying. I'm more of just like, yeah, like, wait, what was that? Come on now. You know that. Didn't that? I kind of start teasing people like, well, we, we early on, we joke with May because May told us, I think it was like one of our first recordings that the internet was out and would be on at ten thirty. And Tig and I looked at each other like, okay.

• 22:20Tig Notaro?

Yeah, that's when their date has to get, leave to go to work.

• 22:25Fortune Feimster?

So when May got on, Tig and I just gave May so much shit, but in a fun way where May was laughing and we were laughing. Because May was like, eh, but kind of busted sort of thing. So there is a way to go about it where it can still be like, you know, light.

• 22:41Tig Notaro?

Yeah, it's, it goes back to like your intentions and your delivery and, you know, as, as long as you're not harboring some. I mean, I'm, it is crazy making when somebody is consistently lying. It's, it's like, that's, it is tough. So I feel for you, Andy. But I think you can find a happy medium between, hold on, I need some clarity. This, I'm confused. Walk me through this. Even down to me too.

• 23:13Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 23:14Tig Notaro?

There's a whole new me too movement.

• 23:15Fortune Feimster?

That's right. And if it becomes a thing where they're like, just being dishonest about every, like, it's not, like tall tales when trying to like, appear cooler is one thing, but just like straight up lying. Then you can make a decision if that's somebody you want in your life or not.

• 23:35Tig Notaro?

  You heard it here first.

• 23:36Fortune Feimster?

Because when someone lies like about everything all the time, that's, it's tough to have a. Deep friendship with that person.

• 23:43Tig Notaro?

  For sure.

• 23:44Fortune Feimster?

Best of luck to you, Andy. Hopefully, hopefully that helps.

• 23:48Tig Notaro?
