• 0:06Sam Morril?

We're here with Ben Schwartz, he's promoting Sonic 3.

• 0:09Mark Normand?

  Whoa!

• 0:10Sam Morril?

  I know.

• 0:10Mark Normand?

  Free loading?

• 0:11Sam Morril?

  Mm-hmm.

• 0:12Mark Normand?

  Wow!

• 0:12Sam Morril?

You want another? We'll do another.

• 0:15Speaker 02

Wait, we should talk, you just got back from roast?

• 0:17Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 0:17Mark Normand?

  Yeah, roasting the year.

• 0:19Speaker 02

How does it feel, the roast of the year, or the roast of the year?

• 0:21Mark Normand?

  Roasting the year 24.

• 0:23Speaker 02

Okay, how do you guys feel?

• 0:24Mark Normand?

Definitely not the roast of the year. It was one of the worst of all time.

• 0:28Sam Morril?

I gave him the brief rundown, that it was not good.

• 0:30Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 0:31Sam Morril?

I think it'll be edited to be, hopefully.

• 0:33Speaker 02

But you guys did well, you hit.

• 0:34Sam Morril?

  We did alright.

• 0:35Mark Normand?

We did well, I ended horribly, I fucked up the ending, but otherwise...

• 0:38Sam Morril?

We thought it would be funny if we ended it by like, being like, "Oh my god, we're gonna get cancelled", and we pretend it, and Mark picks up the phone, and then goes, "Oh shit, Trump just made us Secretary of Agriculture."

• 0:48Mark Normand?

  Oh, that's good, that's funny.

• 0:50Sam Morril?

It killed, we did it at the club, and it killed, and then we did it there, and it got... We didn't have a phone, we forgot to bring a phone up, so the actor Simon Rex is in the front row.

• 0:58Speaker 02

So you asked for his phone?

• 0:59Sam Morril?

So we said, "Simon, can we have your phone?", he just gave us his phone.

• 1:01Speaker 02

Oh, that's cool. And you still have his phone now?

• 1:03Sam Morril?

  Yeah, we took it back.

• 1:05Speaker 02

  Very cool.

• 1:06Sam Morril?

  But it didn't work, so...

• 1:06Speaker 02

Are you guys able, if you have a good set, what do you, how do you, because it seems like you're both very chill. If you have a good set, would you give yourself credit? What was the, what did you say, "We killed?", or would you always say like, "Yeah, we did well"?

• 1:18Mark Normand?

We'd go, "We got through that, that was good."

• 1:19Speaker 02

So you never, are you never like, "We crushed"?

• 1:21Sam Morril?

  No.

• 1:22Mark Normand?

  Rarely.

• 1:22Sam Morril?

  Because even at a special...

• 1:23Speaker 02

Even when you feel like you did, you just can't say it? Why do you think that...

• 1:26Mark Normand?

Because there's always something wrong, you can always find another way.

• 1:28Sam Morril?

You always feel like a fraud on some level, where like, if it's a special, you're like, "Well, now I gotta write a whole new act." It's hard to celebrate the win.

• 1:34Speaker 02

So you can't even enjoy it?

• 1:35Sam Morril?

  I can.

• 1:36Speaker 02

Wow. I get that, I'm bad, I'm bad at enjoying things in the moment, I'm always worried about the next thing.

• 1:40Sam Morril?

Because you got a big movie up, you gotta go on a press tour, right? So you're like, "Fuck."

• 1:43Mark Normand?

  That sucks.

• 1:44Speaker 02

  The press tour?

• 1:45Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:45Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:46Speaker 02

  Great.

• 1:46Sam Morril?

  It's fun?

• 1:47Speaker 02

This is the very last thing on the entire press tour.

• 1:50Mark Normand?

  Hey!

• 1:51Speaker 02

I've been doing press for three months.

• 1:52Mark Normand?

  Yeah, you seem wiped.

• 1:53Speaker 02

  I'm sick, I don't feel great.

• 1:55Sam Morril?

  International, he went international.

• 1:57Speaker 02

Yeah, we went to Brazil, and London, and LA, and New York. And this is it, we're ending, this is it. We're ending, I can't wait. This is amazing.

• 2:05Mark Normand?

Alright, well hey, we're happy to have you.

• 2:07Speaker 02

I want this to be seven hours long. I want us to really have a marathon. We can do that.

• 2:10Sam Morril?

Sonic is kinda, it's kinda crazy it took this long to make a Sonic movie.

• 2:14Speaker 02

Are you a video game fan?

• 2:15Sam Morril?

I, as a kid growing up, I, I liked it, but I'm, I'm a younger brother, so my brother would make me be Tails.

• 2:21Speaker 02

  Yeah, of course.

• 2:22Sam Morril?

So I was like, this game fucking sucks, I'm not even on the screen, you know?

• 2:25Speaker 02

Right, right, right. Every now and then you lift Sonic up.

• 2:28Sam Morril?

But then he'd leave and I'd get to play his and I'd be like, oh, this is kinda cool.

• 2:31Speaker 02

  Oh, that is.

• 2:31Sam Morril?

Sonic's, eh, it was legendary to.

• 2:33Speaker 02

  The best.

• 2:33Sam Morril?

  Turn into a little ball.

• 2:34Speaker 02

The best. Come on, what are we doing?

• 2:36Mark Normand?

I was younger brother too. I was Luigi. I shot a CEO.

• 2:39Speaker 02

Oh, yeah. There you go. Oh, no, got it.

• 2:41Mark Normand?

  Yeah, there you go.

• 2:42Sam Morril?

  Is Luigi the young one?

• 2:44Mark Normand?

  I assume, although he's taller.

• 2:46Sam Morril?

  He's taller.

• 2:46Speaker 02

They're not twin brothers, right? Mario and Luigi?

• 2:48Mark Normand?

I don't know if they're twin. I thought they were related.

• 2:50Speaker 02

They've gotta be brothers. They're definitely, they're, they're Super Mario brothers.

• 2:53Mark Normand?

  Yeah, there you go.

• 2:54Sam Morril?

  Mario's supposed to be 43. Okay, what's Luigi's?

• 2:57Mark Normand?

  I was right.

• 2:58Speaker 02

God, this is a great question. How old is Luigi? What do you think their last names are?

• 3:03Sam Morril?

  Mario Mario. And Luigi Mario.

• 3:06Mark Normand?

  Is that right?

• 3:06Sam Morril?

  Luigi's 24?

• 3:08Speaker 02

Wait, so how old is Mario?

• 3:09Mark Normand?

  Well, they look like shit.

• 3:10Sam Morril?

  That's a different mother.

• 3:12Mark Normand?

Yeah, I thought they were like 48.

• 3:14Speaker 02

By the way, 24 and 26 with full mustache is crazy to me.

• 3:17Mark Normand?

  Well, they're bucking their whops.

• 3:20Speaker 02

  This is crazy.

• 3:22Mark Normand?

  Huh, no one's arrested.

• 3:23Speaker 02

I was 24 years old. Great.

• 3:25Mark Normand?

So their last name is Mario?

• 3:27Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 3:27Mark Normand?

  I never knew that.

• 3:28Speaker 02

Mario Mario. I don't know if Sonic has a last name. This is really bringing up a lot of stuff.

• 3:32Mark Normand?

  Well, he's an animal.

• 3:34Speaker 02

  He's a hedgehog.

• 3:34Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 3:35Sam Morril?

Was that, was that your game growing up?

• 3:37Speaker 02

Loved, loved Sonic, but I love role playing games. I love RPGs. I don't know how much video games you guys play.

• 3:42Sam Morril?

  Like Metal Gear Solid types?

• 3:44Speaker 02

Like Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger and Legend of Zelda. Like all that stuff. I really liked a lot.

• 3:49Mark Normand?

  The vagina's drying.

• 3:51Speaker 02

Do you hear him? What is that sound? Do, give a sound effect.

• 3:54Mark Normand?

Okay. I've heard it before in high school.

• 3:56Sam Morril?

That's another thing we cut from the roast, though. The vagina's dry and act out.

• 4:00Mark Normand?

Hey, I was a Warcraft guy.

• 4:01Speaker 02

  You were?

• 4:02Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 4:02Speaker 02

  So you're a PC man?

• 4:03Mark Normand?

  Yeah, I guess so.

• 4:04Speaker 02

Did you play like Diablo and all those things?

• 4:06Mark Normand?

Nah, I'd never gotten into Diablo. Warcraft took over.

• 4:09Speaker 02

Warcraft took over. You were a big Warcraft man?

• 4:11Mark Normand?

Yeah, my brother liked it, so I played Tails. Yeah, I played, uh, second fiddle to his, he would go pee and go, go eat and I would get in there.

• 4:18Sam Morril?

  I, I was just spoiled.

• 4:20Speaker 02

Warcraft is so intense to just jump in for two seconds.

• 4:23Mark Normand?

I loved it, the orcs killing them. How about Sin City? Not Sin Sim City.

• 4:26Speaker 02

Sim City. Sim City is Leisure Suit Larry. Remember Leisure Suit Larry?

• 4:29Mark Normand?

  Oh, do I?

• 4:31Sam Morril?

  Coo-hound, he's me too'd by now.

• 4:34Speaker 02

He's gotta be done, right? He's gotta be in jail some.

• 4:36Mark Normand?

  Gotta be.

• 4:37Sam Morril?

That was a weird game, just the horny chubby guy.

• 4:40Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 4:40Sam Morril?

And you're a kid, you're like, I'm supposed to be...

• 4:42Speaker 02

Yeah. It was very exciting. I remember as a kid being like, I can't believe they're cursing in a video game. Or like, he's trying to like flirt with women.

• 4:48Mark Normand?

Is that say wet dreams dried twice?

• 4:51Speaker 02

Whoever's thinking of the titles is an absolute genius.

• 4:53Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 4:54Sam Morril?

Sports games are crazy now because not only do you get to play as the players, you get to be a GM.

• 4:58Mark Normand?

  That's right.

• 4:58Sam Morril?

That is like, as I'm older, that's all I want to do, by the way, is like, I'm like, I want to rebuild the Knicks. I want to make some moves.

• 5:04Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 5:04Sam Morril?

As a kid, it was like NBA Jam to like NBA Live.

• 5:08Speaker 02

NBA Live was one of my favorite series of games of all time. I played every single, every year I get a new one.

• 5:14Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 5:14Speaker 02

And people that play 2K right now don't quite know that NBA Live was like everything when you were a kid.

• 5:19Mark Normand?

I don't know that. I was an NBA Jam guy and that's where I kept it.

• 5:22Speaker 02

  NBA Jam's amazing too.

• 5:23Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 5:23Speaker 02

Razzle Dazzle. Razzle Dazzle, he's heating up. Boom Shakalaka.

• 5:27Mark Normand?

  Yes, Boom Shakalaka.

• 5:29Speaker 02

It is all in the shoes, by the way. Did you know that?

• 5:31Mark Normand?

No, I did not know that.

• 5:32Speaker 02

Yeah, it is all in the shoes. 100% in the shoes.

• 5:34Sam Morril?

Those shoes they wore, like pull up, like Walt Frazier would play in Pumas.

• 5:37Mark Normand?

  Really?

• 5:38Speaker 02

They would play in like Birkenstocks.

• 5:40Sam Morril?

How did they last four years?

• 5:41Speaker 02

It's crazy. All those old guys were playing like.

• 5:43Sam Morril?

  Converse?

• 5:44Mark Normand?

  Converse All-Stars.

• 5:45Speaker 02

  Crazy.

• 5:45Sam Morril?

  That's the 80s.

• 5:46Speaker 02

Well, you remember Jordan first shoe was like the most uncomfortable, like didn't he say like you'd get blisters? Yeah, like the beginning of when they're really starting to figure out how to make basketball sneakers.

• 5:54Sam Morril?

  Those are uncomfortable walking shoes.

• 5:55Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 5:56Sam Morril?

And then you're like, what the hell?

• 5:58Speaker 02

  They're dunking with them.

• 5:59Mark Normand?

Well, it's crazy. Back in the 40s, guys worked in a factory in like dress shoes.

• 6:03Sam Morril?

  They served in the war.

• 6:05Mark Normand?

  In dress shoes?

• 6:06Sam Morril?

Ted Williams was a fighter pilot.

• 6:08Mark Normand?

  There you go.

• 6:09Sam Morril?

Joe DiMaggio lost like three years of his prime to just like be like a guy who would go like hit balls around for the troops.

• 6:15Mark Normand?

  Really?

• 6:16Sam Morril?

He lost three years of his prime. He had to come back and be like, you know, and you're like, Ted, you know, DiMaggio should have better numbers. It's like, he was, he lost three years.

• 6:23Speaker 02

  That's incredible. I didn't know that.

• 6:24Sam Morril?

  Isn't that crazy?

• 6:25Mark Normand?

Oh yeah, Mel Brooks, he served.

• 6:26Sam Morril?

You were supposed to, you gotta, you gotta, that was like back in the day when you got a bad look if you didn't serve, you know?

• 6:31Mark Normand?

  Ali, Elvis.

• 6:32Speaker 02

He was gone for a bit. Yeah, those are right now, those would be considered streetwear sneakers. Like you would skate in those.

• 6:38Mark Normand?

I wouldn't wear those because they're uncomfortable now.

• 6:40Sam Morril?

I know. You gotta put a Dr. Scholl's in there just to walk.

• 6:43Speaker 02

Even look at the Adidas next to him, whoever's guarding him in the Bulls or whatever. Those are the same, those are almost these, exactly.

• 6:48Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 6:49Speaker 02

You like barely walk around with them.

• 6:52Mark Normand?

Now they're wearing like pink neon green shoes. It's all different ballgame.

• 6:56Sam Morril?

The flying coach. They weren't doing charter, they were sharing hotel rooms.

• 6:59Mark Normand?

Wow, it's like the WNBA now.

• 7:02Speaker 02

I know. They got their first year of charter because of Katelyn Clark. Oh, yeah. Congrats.

• 7:07Mark Normand?

All right, Clark Bar. Good for her.

• 7:09Speaker 02

  Clark Bar.

• 7:11Mark Normand?

  Finally, a little respect.

• 7:12Speaker 02

You're famous for making up nicknames for WNBA players, right?

• 7:14Mark Normand?

  That's my thing.

• 7:15Speaker 02

You have another one? So Clark Bar, who else you have from WNBA?

• 7:17Mark Normand?

  Uh, Reese's Pieces.

• 7:19Speaker 02

  There you go.

• 7:19Mark Normand?

  Angel Reese's.

• 7:20Speaker 02

Yeah, Angel Reese's Pieces. Did you guys do this on the roast or no?

• 7:23Sam Morril?

I cut a WNBA joke from the roast because they said that they own the material. I'm like, I'm putting that in a special.

• 7:29Speaker 02

Oh, yeah. You have to be careful with what. I used to freelance jokes for Letterman. And if they got, and SNL, we can update. And if they use it, I'm no longer allowed to say it. They own it. And they're allowed to keep it for three months and if they don't use it, then I get it back. But I would always have to be careful not to use anything that I would want to use in a movie or whatever. So I wonder if that's the same for you guys. If it's not your special, do you want to use it and waste it on a roast? Is that something?

• 7:51Sam Morril?

I wasted two bits on this because I just want to make sure that our set was good. So I was like, it's a Pete Diddy joke. I'm like, how long am I going to tell this?

• 7:58Speaker 02

  Right.

• 7:58Sam Morril?

And then an Epstein joke that I'm like, I never tell this.

• 8:02Speaker 02

  There you go.

• 8:03Sam Morril?

They got a theme with your stand.

• 8:03Speaker 02

  I know.

• 8:05Mark Normand?

  Kid fucking.

• 8:07Sam Morril?

  Well, you know.

• 8:08Mark Normand?

  Take it down a notch.

• 8:09Sam Morril?

We, by the way, you're in a movie I enjoyed called Standing Up Falling Down.

• 8:13Speaker 02

  Did you see that movie?

• 8:14Sam Morril?

Shout out Pete Hori for writing that. That was a, that was a good.

• 8:17Speaker 02

Pete is the best. Pete Hori is the best.

• 8:19Sam Morril?

Yeah, it's a good movie, man.

• 8:20Speaker 02

Oh, thanks, man. I got to work with Billy Crystal.

• 8:22Mark Normand?

  That's awesome.

• 8:23Speaker 02

  Stand-up legend.

• 8:24Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 8:24Speaker 02

He was incredible. And we filmed it in Long Island, right where he grew up.

• 8:27Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 8:28Sam Morril?

  You were governors, weren't you?

• 8:29Speaker 02

  Yeah, we were.

• 8:30Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 8:30Speaker 02

We did everything. We did everything. It was awesome. That movie cost $1 million to make. So we were like changing the car or changing like the restaurant we were going to film in. It was crazy. We just, I can't believe we said yesterday. It was amazing.

• 8:43Sam Morril?

Yeah, it was a good movie and it was like, you know.

• 8:45Speaker 02

  I was a stand-up in that.

• 8:46Sam Morril?

It had some darkness to it.

• 8:47Mark Normand?

Well, making a stand-up movie is always challenging because Punchline, they're all kind of considered a joke.

• 8:53Speaker 02

Yes, and my character is supposed to be bad at the beginning and then better, and so we used tweets of mine at the beginning.

• 8:58Mark Normand?

  What?

• 8:59Speaker 02

Cheesy, and then slowly like started to.

• 9:02Sam Morril?

  Neil Brennan's tweets.

• 9:02Speaker 02

Write better. Yeah, yeah. Like shitty tweets by me and then Neil Brennan tweets by the end.

• 9:07Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 9:07Speaker 02

But that was fun. It was also funny to go do, you know, stand-up and like do it over and over. It's so different than. I started doing stand-up when I first started comedy.

• 9:17Mark Normand?

  Nice.

• 9:17Speaker 02

And it wasn't, I couldn't, I did improv at the same time and I was so drawn to improv because when you suck, you fail with everybody.

• 9:24Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 9:24Speaker 02

And then when you succeed, you succeed with everybody. And at the beginning, you guys, you guys know way more about this than me, but it's like, I feel like it's so lonely at the beginning of stand-up because you don't really know anybody. Everybody has five minutes. You have to bring people to your shows.

• 9:36Mark Normand?

  Yep.

• 9:36Speaker 02

It's like, so you have to love it. You would have to love it to keep going.

• 9:39Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 9:40Speaker 02

And I loved improv and sketch. And I like stand-up, I was like, I'm not good enough to get on stage. I was, I got, I got to the point where they said, you don't have to bring people. I was like, oh, this is exciting. And I, I just bombed.

• 9:51Mark Normand?

  In front of friends.

• 9:53Speaker 02

In front of no friends. The one with like, you don't have to bring people anymore.

• 9:55Mark Normand?

  Got it, got it.

• 9:56Speaker 02

Just come and do a set. And I, I.

• 9:58Sam Morril?

It makes no sense that you have to bring people at the beginning because I'm bad.

• 10:02Speaker 02

  I know.

• 10:03Sam Morril?

  It's like your first show.

• 10:04Speaker 02

But that's how they make money. The only way they make money, yeah.

• 10:06Sam Morril?

Of course, but it makes no sense for us, I'm saying. But, you know, you found like improv and sketch. What about that? Is it, for improv, your mind works quickly. I've seen, I saw like a snippet of you when you were doing it with Middle Ditch.

• 10:17Speaker 02

  Yeah, Middle Ditch and Schwartz.

• 10:18Sam Morril?

And, uh, I think we both did Cluster Fest one year and I was on one and I saw a bit of you.

• 10:22Speaker 02

  Oh, nice.

• 10:23Sam Morril?

Yeah, yeah. So I was like, oh, man, their minds.

• 10:24Speaker 02

That was Ben Schwartz and Friends or Middle Ditch and Schwartz for?

• 10:26Sam Morril?

I think it was you two together.

• 10:27Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah, yeah, probably.

• 10:28Sam Morril?

But I was like, man, their minds are working quick to, do you have stuff that you're like, please hit this, please hit?

• 10:34Speaker 02

No, I go on stage with nothing, nothing. Literally zero.

• 10:36Mark Normand?

  You two are insane.

• 10:38Speaker 02

  Oh, thanks, dude.

• 10:39Mark Normand?

The connection here, it's so in sync, it's.

• 10:41Speaker 02

It'd be so funny if you've never seen us.

• 10:42Mark Normand?

I've seen it. I've seen it.

• 10:43Speaker 02

Never seen it, but it sounds, this is the way I've heard about it.

• 10:46Mark Normand?

I watched Coming Up, like he was always great at the UCB Theater.

• 10:49Speaker 02

Yeah, that's where we started doing stuff at UCB in New York. And then at the same. I know Adam Pally and Gil Azaridol.

• 10:54Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 10:55Speaker 02

So me, Pally, and Gil had a three-person sketch team called Hot Sauce. And then Montreal Comedy Festival first introduced sketch. And we were able to do like that first batch. Where like Bob and Dave or Bob Odenkirk and David Cross were hosting it. So it was like the biggest thing in the world.

• 11:09Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 11:10Speaker 02

Cause we could not get into Aspen for some reason. All these festivals, I don't even know if they exist anymore.

• 11:14Mark Normand?

Nah, Aspen's gone, Montreal's kinda gone.

• 11:16Sam Morril?

This is the first year it's gone.

• 11:18Speaker 02

  Isn't that crazy?

• 11:19Mark Normand?

  It's wild.

• 11:19Speaker 02

It was such an exciting thing. That was like the landmark. If you could do that.

• 11:23Sam Morril?

It was exciting, but then it like slowly like, like back in the day, you hear stories in the nineties where a guy's like, "I got a $750,000 holding deal."

• 11:30Mark Normand?

  Yeah, dude.

• 11:30Sam Morril?

I'm like, yeah, I went there and I got like a shitty agent.

• 11:33Speaker 02

Oh, yeah. I didn't get anything.

• 11:34Sam Morril?

  It's like all you get.

• 11:35Speaker 02

I was so excited, though. I remember it being so exciting, but you're right, nothing happened afterward.

• 11:39Sam Morril?

I got an agent and then the guy, you know, when you're signed with an agency, like the big guy comes in to like close it?

• 11:44Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 11:45Sam Morril?

They're like, "This is like the big dog at our agency." And I was like, "Oh, shit." And then I was like, "So that guy's my agent?" They're like, "Yeah." And then, and then I was like, "Whatever happened to Fred?" They're like, "Oh, he left. He just went to another agency."

• 11:55Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 11:56Sam Morril?

Within signing me, like two weeks later, he went to like UTA or some-

• 11:58Mark Normand?

  I'm outta here. I'm gone.

• 11:59Sam Morril?

I was like, "That was the, he was like the guy."

• 12:01Speaker 02

  That's so fun.

• 12:02Sam Morril?

  I was that stupid.

• 12:03Mark Normand?

We have a friend who, I'm not gonna say his name, but he did Montreal and had a bad set and lost his manager.

• 12:08Speaker 02

  No.

• 12:09Mark Normand?

So he went to Montreal and lost industry.

• 12:11Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 12:12Mark Normand?

  Lost representation.

• 12:13Sam Morril?

  Jesus.

• 12:13Speaker 02

That's, I've never heard of that before.

• 12:15Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 12:15Speaker 02

  He must've been really bad.

• 12:17Mark Normand?

He's good. He just had, it was like one of those, uh, industry nights where they're all in their BlackBerries. No one's listening and he just tanked and they're all there to see one hot guy.

• 12:25Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 12:25Mark Normand?

You know, that guy skyrocketed. Matt Rife. And then, uh, all the other people, they're just waiting like, "Oh, who's this dude? Get out of the way." And then they bombed.

• 12:33Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 12:34Mark Normand?

Yeah, but it was better off. He's better off. You don't want that manager.

• 12:37Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, yeah. A person that gives up on you immediately.

• 12:39Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 12:40Speaker 02

  After one bad set.

• 12:41Mark Normand?

Remember getting new faces? What did, what did you guys call it for improv?

• 12:45Speaker 02

That was it for, well, improv though, doesn't exist. Improv, also the touring that I'm doing now for improv doesn't exist. It's the first time we're playing like, uh, the venues that I play are bigger than, uh, any improv tour kind of that's ever happened. So we're like trying to show that, uh, I'd love to hear your honest, I know you guys are always honest, but you're honest. Anytime I talk to stand-ups or do stand-up podcasts, I feel like stand-up's kinda shit on improv a little bit.

• 13:06Sam Morril?

  No, no. I, I, I-

• 13:08Mark Normand?

  Yeah, they tend to do.

• 13:09Speaker 02

  A hundred percent.

• 13:10Sam Morril?

But not good improv people, though. I mean, I think-

• 13:12Speaker 02

  Right.

• 13:12Sam Morril?

Look, here's the thing. If you're great at improv, it's like, that's insane. But I've seen, it's like- It's kinda like magic. You see someone who's bad.

• 13:21Speaker 02

That's exactly what I say. Oh, I'm talking about magic in general. It's the idea of like when you pull it off. But it's the same with you guys when you have a great stand-up set and everything's going.

• 13:28Mark Normand?

  There's so much bad stand-up.

• 13:29Sam Morril?

How are stand-ups, you know, how are we portrayed outside of stand-up? We look like the corniest.

• 13:35Speaker 02

No, stand-up, no, because you can point to a thousand movies. You can point to a thousand specials. You can even point, like, you can point to Pryor or Steve Martin. You have different versions of stand-up. And in improv, before Melchior Schwartz, there was only like one real special out there. And then there's a documentary on a team called TJ and Dave who are great. But it was a doc kind of, and the other one was like Ass Cat, which was a UCB show, but it was on Bravo and it was shot different. So it wasn't really what they do. So like, we never had something we could point to, like a Kevin Hart special.

• 14:02Mark Normand?

We had Who's Line. I know that's super mainstream.

• 14:05Speaker 02

But that's short form. I do that totally different. So that's like, uh, it's like quick little jokes as opposed to like, um...

• 14:10Sam Morril?

  So you're like building something.

• 14:12Speaker 02

Yeah, like we do. So if you ever watch a special, it's an hour, an hour and a half, like almost a play. We do an entire hour. We talk to an audience member for 10, 15 minutes. For Ben Schwartz and Friends, what I did this year was, I asked the audience, what's, uh... Tell me about the most exciting day or night of your life. And people raise their hands. And we pick someone that doesn't seem fucking bananas. And then we ask them. They tell us a story about the most exciting day or night of their life. And then we say, "Thank you so much." They don't talk the rest of the show. And then we improvise for 70 minutes.

• 14:37Mark Normand?

  Jesus.

• 14:38Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, yeah. And we try to do like the whole thing. And now I'm trying to give an intermission. Because I'm kinda learning that to give even more, more show, um, and people like going and getting a drink and... Like, we never gave an intermission, but now like the venues are also like, they would appreciate it and stuff like that. So we're doing two halves. So we're doing two tiny shows, but by the end of the second one, we're calling back everything from both.

• 14:58Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 15:00Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 15:00Sam Morril?

Are you ever up there when you're like, "This is...?" Are you ever like, "No, that's bad. Give me someone else?"

• 15:05Speaker 02

When I'm interviewing the audience, all the time.

• 15:08Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 15:08Speaker 02

Because I can also tell when, like, if they're telling us a story, like, there's an example of, I was like, "Tell us the most exciting day in our life." And the guy's like, "It was in Chicago. We were playing in the Chicago Theater." And he goes, "Uh, dude, when the Cubs won the World Series." I was like, "Amazing. Were you there?" He's like, "Nope, I watched it on my TV." And I was like, "Okay, did anything happen?" He goes, "I watched the game, my man." And I was like, "Well..." We have to do this for an hour and a half.

• 15:28Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 15:29Speaker 02

We need like, tell us a story or like, you know.

• 15:31Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 15:31Speaker 02

Who are you around or blah, blah, blah. So it's like, um, so I learned really quick. Like, oh, this isn't gonna be good, or this person's really excited and not really doesn't have anything to say. But I'll like politely go to someone else or someone else. But the most I'll go to is probably three people or something like that. And then I'll be like, alright, we gotta figure out something from these three.

• 15:47Mark Normand?

Have you ever had one of those, cause you've done a million shows, I assume.

• 15:50Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 15:50Mark Normand?

You ever had one of those ones like, there's good, there's great, and then one is just magic. Everything just comes together. I, I did improv for like 10 minutes.

• 15:59Speaker 02

  Did you?

• 15:59Mark Normand?

And I had a, oh yeah. Somebody told me if you're gonna do standup, you should do an improv class, just to learn how to riff.

• 16:04Speaker 02

This is great. Where'd you take an improv class?

• 16:05Mark Normand?

  Uh, the pit.

• 16:06Speaker 02

Yeah, I, I performed at the pit when I first started. Who's your teacher?

• 16:08Mark Normand?

  Uh.

• 16:09Speaker 02

  Nice.

• 16:11Mark Normand?

He was an old kooky guy.

• 16:12Speaker 02

  Armando Diaz.

• 16:14Mark Normand?

  Maybe.

• 16:14Speaker 02

He's not kooky, but he's like the old, he's like the veteran over there.

• 16:17Mark Normand?

He was not, he was, he was low bar.

• 16:19Speaker 02

Oh, he's like the guy that, like, their forums named after Armando Diaz.

• 16:22Mark Normand?

Yeah, okay, this guy, he's intro, he probably was an intern that they gave us. But it was bad, but first thing I noticed was improvisers are supportive. Comments like, get out of my way, you piece of shit.

• 16:34Sam Morril?

Open mics at standup were like.

• 16:36Mark Normand?

  Oh.

• 16:36Sam Morril?

  They're just not listening.

• 16:37Mark Normand?

  Ruthless.

• 16:38Sam Morril?

The guy, the guy I toured with who's like now one of my best friends.

• 16:40Speaker 02

  Barack Obama.

• 16:41Sam Morril?

  Barack Obama.

• 16:42Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 16:42Sam Morril?

We started out, you know, bad, but, no, he, my friend Gary Vider just saw me spacing out during an open mic set at Maui Taco. And he goes, this fucking asshole's not listening. That's how I met him.

• 16:54Speaker 02

  Really?

• 16:54Sam Morril?

And then we were on a show the next night and he goes, I'm really sorry. And I was like, nah, I get it.

• 16:57Mark Normand?

I saw how much bigger you were. Sorry about that. He's a little guy.

• 17:01Sam Morril?

  Oh, is he?

• 17:01Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 17:02Speaker 02

  Oh, amazing.

• 17:03Mark Normand?

Um, but yeah, you got, I, it was, first of all, it was crazy supportive. That's when I knew, I was like, this isn't for me. Cause I didn't care about any of them, you know, but they were super nice. And they're like, oh, you're having, you need a place to go to Thanksgiving. And I was like, ugh.

• 17:15Speaker 02

Oh, I mean, like in life, they were supportive.

• 17:16Mark Normand?

  Both, everywhere.

• 17:17Speaker 02

That's great. This makes me so happy for my community.

• 17:19Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 17:20Speaker 02

And you're scared of it. You hate it.

• 17:21Mark Normand?

Well, I just wasn't, I knew it wasn't my scene.

• 17:23Speaker 02

How were you at improv? Were you so, I bet you were very, you're trying to get the laugh, so you're not thinking about the scene.

• 17:28Mark Normand?

  Exactly.

• 17:28Speaker 02

Whenever I, for people who start their standups that start like, they'll break the scene to, to make themselves look funny. Like, if I'll be like, I'll be like, man, it's, god, it's cold out here. They'll be like, no, it's not. And I'm like, well. It's like, now you got a joke and the scene is over, but now that joke is over. We could build something.

• 17:45Mark Normand?

I wasn't that bad. I, I hate the negate guy. That guy's, get, get rid of him. That guy's a problem. The negate guy. The, the real N-word.

• 17:52Sam Morril?

I think it's crazy that you had no one to, to look for, uh. To like for what you want as a career.

• 17:59Speaker 02

People don't really get paid for this.

• 18:02Mark Normand?

  True.

• 18:03Speaker 02

You guys have a thousand examples of people getting paid.

• 18:04Sam Morril?

Exactly, like there was a trajectory, like what did you think your career?

• 18:08Speaker 02

We performed for free, we probably shouldn't get into this too much, but at UCB, I performed for free for my entire career for, from 2003 to 2009, I never got paid for a show. And then at the beginning, it's, this is why I think it happens, at the beginning, nobody's coming to my shows. Literally nobody.

• 18:23Mark Normand?

  Sure.

• 18:23Speaker 02

But I'm still able to get up and do 30 minutes of improv. So like, they're not making money at all, they're losing money off me. And slowly, as I got better and better, and the shows got better. City M.

• 18:32Sam Morril?

  The word got out.

• 18:33Speaker 02

Word got out, people started being like, oh, you should come see this guy or our group or Hot Sauce or Shitty Jobs or something. And then, now we're selling out every show, but still not getting paid, but in my head, it's prob, I mean, I don't even know, how much does this, so when you go to a Comedy Cellar, how much do you guys get paid?

• 18:47Sam Morril?

We should. Yeah, well, yeah, that's what it would cut that out.

• 18:50Speaker 02

  Oh, really?

• 18:51Mark Normand?

  Beep it.

• 18:52Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 18:52Mark Normand?

  Why, you think that's bad?

• 18:55Sam Morril?

It's weird, I feel like they look bad, yeah.

• 18:57Mark Normand?

  Okay, okay.

• 18:58Sam Morril?

  Yeah, it's like, a week.

• 19:01Speaker 02

  Per set?

• 19:01Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 19:02Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 19:02Speaker 02

And then you guys will try to fit in a bunch of different sets in one.

• 19:06Sam Morril?

But I think the deal in our head at this point is like, we're trying shit.

• 19:10Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 19:10Sam Morril?

When you're starting out, then you gotta kill every set.

• 19:12Speaker 02

Yeah, it's gotta be so much pressure, you must have been way more nervous before than now. Cause you can vomit and not care now.

• 19:17Mark Normand?

  Hundred percent.

• 19:18Sam Morril?

  You still care, but, uh.

• 19:20Mark Normand?

  Still hurts.

• 19:20Sam Morril?

It's still, yeah, it still feels bad, but it's like, you know, you, you, you look, did I get a new bit? Like, we were, we were honing a joke, a, a, a joke, joke, joke set for like a week for this roast.

• 19:31Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 19:32Sam Morril?

And we were really like, you have to, you have to really be hard on each other, cause we'd never worked together on a set.

• 19:38Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 19:38Speaker 02

  Really?

• 19:39Sam Morril?

So we're like, yeah, we've never gone up together, so we're like, well, we'll just, uh.

• 19:42Speaker 02

Wait, what was that like then? Cause you guys have, you guys both have specials, you guys both have your own thing. Is it weird? This is you guys.

• 19:48Mark Normand?

Completely new and different, but we, we've worked together for 15 years on jokes, but this is the first time we went up together and told them, so you have to be like, that one's not hitting, or you got two killers, I got two weak ones, we gotta whip and swap.

• 20:00Speaker 02

Do you ever share a joke? Someone sets it up and the other one punches, or no? It's always, I do my bit, then you do your bit, I do my bit, you do your bit.

• 20:06Sam Morril?

We tag each other, but we didn't, we didn't.

• 20:08Mark Normand?

We didn't want to get too Sklar brother-y. You know, we wanted to keep it stand-up-y, kind of. Not that they're not stand-ups, but you know what I'm saying. Like, we didn't want to like finish each other's.

• 20:17Speaker 02

Love the Sklar brothers. Did you like, also huge Knicks fans or huge basketball fans, huge sports fans. Did you like, would you want to do it again? Or no, you hated it?

• 20:25Mark Normand?

Well, the show was such a, I feel like we came prepared. The show was a little unorganized, right? So, that was, that's the risk you take.

• 20:34Speaker 02

  Right, right.

• 20:34Mark Normand?

I think we could do it again if we were.

• 20:36Speaker 02

  If we wanted to.

• 20:36Mark Normand?

  If we wanted to.

• 20:37Speaker 02

Yeah. Did we secretly hate each other?

• 20:39Mark Normand?

  Yeah, it's rough.

• 20:40Speaker 02

You've barely looked each other's in the eyes.

• 20:42Mark Normand?

Well, that's my, I can't look people in the eye. That's not him, yeah.

• 20:45Speaker 02

  Why not?

• 20:46Mark Normand?

  Eh, it's too intimate.

• 20:47Speaker 02

  He's gotten better, though.

• 20:48Mark Normand?

I'm doing it with you right now.

• 20:49Speaker 02

Try, try looking me in the eyes.

• 20:50Mark Normand?

  Eh, I'll kiss ya.

• 20:51Speaker 02

No, you won't. Talk, talk for me for two seconds. Just saying.

• 20:54Mark Normand?

  Kiss him. Alright.

• 20:56Speaker 02

Why, what does it feel? It just feels like.

• 20:57Mark Normand?

It's too, eh, what are we gonna, hug?

• 21:00Speaker 02

No, we're talking to each other.

• 21:03Mark Normand?

Well, I'm listening. If I, if I look in the eye, I'll listen less.

• 21:06Speaker 02

When you do stand-up, where do you look?

• 21:07Mark Normand?

  Right over the head.

• 21:09Speaker 02

  Never look at anybody.

• 21:09Mark Normand?

Well, that's different, because I think when you look at the audience, they're go, ha ha.

• 21:12Speaker 02

Yeah, I agree, I agree with that.

• 21:13Mark Normand?

  I don't want to force a laugh.

• 21:14Speaker 02

I also, I hate, I hate when I see the audience. I love when it's totally dark.

• 21:18Mark Normand?

  Same.

• 21:18Speaker 02

I love when I hear the, for me, if it's like a big show, I, you know, I come out, after all these shows, I've probably done 2,000 shows by now, but it's like, after all these shows, like, I'm not nervous anymore, unless it's like a big one, like unless a biggie is coming up. But, um, I'm always, whenever I get my first laugh, I'm fine. I'm so comfortable. I just, just to know, like, okay, we're all, we're here, we're gonna have fun. And I feel like a part of what I do, I remember Jim Carrey used to say this also, is trying to make the audience feel comfortable. So, it's like, at the beginning, when I come out there, because for improv, they're like, they're gonna make it all up on the spot, it could bomb, oh my god, I'm nervous for these guys. I come out, I talk to the audience for five minutes, just talk to them. And then I invite my, the people I bring on my show, which is three people, whoever, I change it per show.

• 22:01Speaker 02

And then we all talk to the audience, and then I do the interview, and now we're, everybody's fucking calm. The audience knows what's gonna happen, they're relaxed, we're relaxed, and then we do the show. And it always helps. Is there a version of that for you guys, where you have to go out blasting with, like, a great joke?

• 22:15Mark Normand?

I go out blasting. I want to get them right away. Because I don't feel like they trust that I'm funny.

• 22:20Speaker 02

  Right.

• 22:20Mark Normand?

  To prove it right away.

• 22:21Speaker 02

But they know what stand-up is. Sometimes people at our shows don't know what improv is, so it's like...

• 22:24Mark Normand?

  That's true.

• 22:25Speaker 02

They're like, "What's gonna happen?" So we kind of explain it to them.

• 22:27Sam Morril?

I get that, that there's less of a trust thing with you guys.

• 22:30Speaker 02

Yeah, or just from the audience, just being like, "What's gonna happen?" Just a little bit nervous. And now they're learning more about it.

• 22:35Mark Normand?

People always go, "Stand-up, I don't know how you do it, it's so brave, and it takes balls." This, to me, is way ballsier, because you have no net.

• 22:42Speaker 02

  We have nothing.

• 22:43Mark Normand?

We have, at least if it's written, and it still could bomb, but you know what you're gonna say when you go out there. You gotta go out blank.

• 22:49Speaker 02

It's scary. I think stand-up, so for me, when I started doing stand-up, I was way more nervous for stand-up than I was for improv.

• 22:55Mark Normand?

  Really?

• 22:55Speaker 02

Way more, because you have to work, and then you're saying, "This is what I found funny." I find this so funny that I've been working on it for weeks. And now I'm gonna show it to you, let's see what you think. For me, it's like, I listen to something, now, on the spot, and everybody in the audience knows, on the spot, I'm gonna try to make a beautiful scene that makes you laugh. But it's like, we all know what's happening on the spot, and we're trying to find it. You guys are like, "I've been working on this, this is the funniest thing I can think of right now." I'm like, "Let's see what you think." And if they say no, it almost feels like... But again, anytime I talk to a stand-up, it's the same thing, they're like, "I'm not gonna go onstage with nothing."

• 23:24Sam Morril?

  But even the...

• 23:24Speaker 02

That's crazy. By the way, you're looking so much more, this is amazing.

• 23:27Mark Normand?

  Ah, I can...

• 23:27Speaker 02

Do you feel yourself doing it?

• 23:28Mark Normand?

  Full nose.

• 23:29Speaker 02

You're looking at my nose, you can't look at my eyes.

• 23:31Mark Normand?

  No.

• 23:31Sam Morril?

Even the greats have a low batting average, though, like, I mean, we were talking about the other... We'd throw jokes that we thought were hilarious to each other out, and it would get just nothing.

• 23:38Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 23:39Sam Morril?

I had one that I was like, "Maybe that's a bit." And the line between, like, truthful and too mean is so thin. I didn't...

• 23:48Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 23:49Sam Morril?

That wasn't working, that he thought was funny, though, like, let me tell you, it was about Luigi, and about like, we were doing all these topical jokes, that Luigi...

• 23:55Speaker 02

  Oh, just recently, then?

• 23:56Sam Morril?

  Yeah, it was last week.

• 23:57Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 23:58Sam Morril?

We were one, remember that one, you were like, "That's gotta be in," because it hit. And then the next show, they looked at me like I was the biggest asshole in the world, where I said, "No." You know, women, you know, you like all these bad boys, there was like Luigi Mangione, and the Menendez Brothers, like, you're like, "These guys are hot." I'm like, "Maybe that's why you're so mad that they're taking away a woman's right to choose." You choose horribly.

• 24:16Speaker 02

  Oh, God.

• 24:17Mark Normand?

That's funny, and how'd it go?

• 24:18Sam Morril?

The first show, it killed, and then the second show, they were like, "What?"

• 24:22Speaker 02

Are you guys the barometers for each other?

• 24:24Mark Normand?

Well, a little, but you can never know as good as the audience.

• 24:27Speaker 02

But no, I'm saying, for you... Guys, who's the person you go to to be like, is this funny? Is it each other?

• 24:31Sam Morril?

Text each other sometimes. Not just is this funny.

• 24:33Speaker 02

  See, that's cooperative. That's amazing.

• 24:34Sam Morril?

Not just is this funny, but is this hack? Has this been done?

• 24:37Speaker 02

  Right, right, right.

• 24:38Sam Morril?

Does someone do this angle? But like, you know, you're doing, when you see a perfectly honed joke, like there was trial and error. It didn't just come out perfect, that thought, I mean, because we're so numb. We're so numb to what, we didn't, we didn't realize how offensive some of the jokes were telling are because we just don't, we were like.

• 24:53Speaker 02

Yeah, you guys are your own audience. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 24:55Sam Morril?

But we were trying out jokes where they were like, huh? Like, we had a couple of Stephen Hawking jokes where they're like, what the fuck is wrong with you guys? And we're like, oh my god, we thought that was just like a funny play on words. I don't know.

• 25:03Speaker 02

  Oh, wow.

• 25:04Mark Normand?

Right. Sometimes you get so lost in the mechanics of the joke, like the wordplay or the punchline, they don't realize we're saying something, something about Lizzo being fat.

• 25:12Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 25:14Mark Normand?

Like, I used to have a joke where I go, you know, kids of the back of the day, they yelled shotgun. Now, when they yell, they're in a classroom.

• 25:19Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 25:20Mark Normand?

And to me, I'm just like, shotgun, shotgun. There you go. That's a joke.

• 25:22Sam Morril?

  Right.

• 25:23Mark Normand?

The audience is like, Jesus, you're talking about dead kids. And I'm like, oh, yeah. I just, I was just working on the shotgun thing.

• 25:29Speaker 02

Right. So you're like, then, then you adjust?

• 25:32Mark Normand?

Nah, I kept it. But my crowd liked it.

• 25:36Sam Morril?

No, you have to tweak though. I mean, that's the thing. It's like, you do figure, that's why we still do The Cellar, because like, some comics get spoiled with their crowd and then they.

• 25:44Speaker 02

  Yeah, I agree.

• 25:44Sam Morril?

Only kidding. It's like, no, you want to make sure you're still just funny to the masses.

• 25:48Speaker 02

Yes. Although when you go tour, people are seeing you for you guys.

• 25:51Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 25:52Speaker 02

So you can do your style, whatever. That's why it's interesting when you did that, um, roast, that's not your audience.

• 25:58Mark Normand?

  No.

• 25:58Speaker 02

People there may like you guys, but they're not there just to see you. That probably is more nerve wracking.

• 26:03Mark Normand?

It was. Yeah, that's why we prepared the shit out of it.

• 26:05Speaker 02

  Yeah, that's awesome.

• 26:06Sam Morril?

We were, I mean, we were on a flight. That was great, just being on a flight, bouncing. I mean, the people next to us must have thought we were the worst human beings. We're just bouncing.

• 26:14Speaker 02

  Terrible, mean joke. Yeah.

• 26:15Sam Morril?

Well, literally, Jeff Ross is revealing he has cancer on this thing. He's okay.

• 26:20Speaker 02

  In real life?

• 26:21Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 26:21Speaker 02

What type of cancer does he have?

• 26:22Mark Normand?

  Colon.

• 26:23Speaker 02

  Really?

• 26:23Sam Morril?

But we're bouncing like cancer jokes off each other because we're like, he's, he wanted us, he wanted us to roast him for the cancer.

• 26:29Speaker 02

  Really?

• 26:30Sam Morril?

Yeah, he was, thought it was like, he was like moved by the fact that we could roast him.

• 26:33Speaker 02

  Is he in remission?

• 26:34Sam Morril?

Yeah, he's, he's, they're cutting the last chemo.

• 26:36Speaker 02

  Jesus Christ.

• 26:37Sam Morril?

Sure, so he's okay. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, there were so many cancer mist jokes, too.

• 26:41Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 26:42Speaker 02

  Oh, really?

• 26:43Sam Morril?

Yeah, yeah, we're just, but yeah, I mean, uh, we're just like, what does Jeff look like? A lump.

• 26:49Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 26:49Sam Morril?

Then you're like, you look like a lump, and like a lump, women are terrified to find you in their shower. Joke, you know, so we're just bouncing bits like that.

• 26:56Mark Normand?

Imagine hearing that in first class.

• 26:59Sam Morril?

  Yeah, it's great.

• 26:59Mark Normand?

  What the fuck?

• 27:00Speaker 02

I love that you guys flew first class.

• 27:02Sam Morril?

Well, they're flying us, you know.

• 27:03Mark Normand?

Netflix, I flew back coach, by the way.

• 27:05Sam Morril?

  What the hell, why?

• 27:06Mark Normand?

Cause I needed that time slot, that's all they had.

• 27:08Sam Morril?

Yeah, I'd rather a red eye and just pass out.

• 27:11Mark Normand?

  Did you get any sleep?

• 27:12Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 27:12Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah, you look good.

• 27:13Sam Morril?

Look at me, it's the best I've felt in a week.

• 27:15Speaker 02

You look awake, you're ready to go.

• 27:16Sam Morril?

  This guy's sick now.

• 27:17Speaker 02

Everybody, I'm the only one that's sick. You're doing great.

• 27:20Mark Normand?

Thanks, yeah, I feel good. But, back to the movie, goddammit.

• 27:23Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 27:24Speaker 02

Jim Carrey. Jim Carrey's in it.

• 27:26Sam Morril?

  Is that not crazy?

• 27:27Speaker 02

Classic, insanely crazy. He's so good in it, too. I don't know if you've seen him, but he like, he like feels like, you know those movies in the 90s? Obviously you do, like where he just crushes? He is crushing in these movies. He's so funny and playing like a big character, and then in this one, he plays, uh, himself, which is Ivar Robotnik, then he plays his grandfather.

• 27:47Mark Normand?

  Oh, wow.

• 27:47Speaker 02

So he's playing two characters who play with each other, so he would do scenes where he would do one side, and someone else would be the guy, and then he'd have to respond to what he did the day before as the other character.

• 27:56Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 27:57Speaker 02

So it seems where it's just him two.

• 27:59Sam Morril?

And would he, would he watch the scenes, so he'd kind of nail it?

• 28:01Speaker 02

You'd pick which ones, which, which takes that I think he wanted. I'm never on set, I'm in a booth the whole time, so I do it voice.

• 28:06Sam Morril?

Is that weird that you're just not, he's in this movie?

• 28:08Speaker 02

So I only get to see him for like press.

• 28:10Mark Normand?

Uh, well, at least you get to see him.

• 28:12Speaker 02

It's amazing, Keanu Reeves is in this one, too.

• 28:13Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 28:14Speaker 02

So we did, dude, yeah, we did press and the line was, uh, Idris Elba's in it.

• 28:19Mark Normand?

  Jesus.

• 28:20Speaker 02

Keanu Reeves is in it, Jim Carrey's in it, James Marsden is in it, and I'm just looking down the line, and it's like fucking Ocean's Eleven, it's like crazy, that's like all these huge actors in a video game movie. Sonic the Hedgehog, yeah, that's crazy, all these pictures are fucking bananas.

• 28:32Mark Normand?

  That's incredible, you made it.

• 28:34Speaker 02

  It's crazy.

• 28:35Sam Morril?

Uh, and do you have any cool Jim Carrey stories?

• 28:38Mark Normand?

  Or Keanu?

• 28:39Speaker 02

Keanu loved, so Keanu, I ju- the thing is like, the, I shook Keanu's hand beforehand and he seemed really nice. And then we were doing this, the UK red carpet and we closed down Leicester Square. Would you guys ever been to London? It's like a huge deal. It's like our Times Square kinda. And so they closed it down. There's an enormous thing. I've only said hello to Keanu and said, hey man, I'm a big fan of Shrek's hand. He was very nice. And then they come to me, they go, hey, you're gonna go live on television with Keanu in 20 seconds. And then they go, I go, what? And they bring me to the end. And uh, there's a woman from ITV, a local news station there, a big one, and she has a microphone and she's like, nice to meet you. And I go, and Keanu looks at me and then I was like, I guess we're, this is like how I meet you and let's go. And they're like, alright, 3, 2, 1, and they do the interview.

• 29:21Speaker 02

And I kinda started playing in the interview and being like, doing a little bit of bits and he immediately jumped on.

• 29:26Mark Normand?

  Alright!

• 29:26Speaker 02

And loved it. And the whole press tour, when we did uh, interviews together, we would do bits. And it would, and he was, he was, he just couldn't wait, of course. He's like, he was the best.

• 29:37Mark Normand?

  That's great.

• 29:37Speaker 02

  We had the best time.

• 29:38Mark Normand?

Look at that, that's a photo. You gotta freaking met people.

• 29:40Speaker 02

  I know, it's crazy. I do, I did. It's amazing.

• 29:43Mark Normand?

Well, I'm just glad he's still working, cause like Mike Myers is kinda done and the Eddie Murphy's kinda done. It's just good to see him still going.

• 29:49Speaker 02

Dude, he's so funny in this thing.

• 29:51Sam Morril?

Eddie Murphy was in a movie like 4 months ago.

• 29:52Speaker 02

Yeah, he came out with 3 movies.

• 29:54Mark Normand?

  Oh, really?

• 29:54Speaker 02

He's been in 3 movies in like 4 months. And a new Beverly Hills Cop.

• 29:57Mark Normand?

Alright, well, I shit, I missed it. That's true.

• 30:01Speaker 02

But this was the, that's the London, that's the London uh, premiere.

• 30:04Sam Morril?

Yeah, Jim Carrey has, other than this, he hasn't done.

• 30:06Speaker 02

I think this is the only movies he's done since Covid, maybe?

• 30:11Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 30:11Speaker 02

Could be. Cause our movie came out during Covid. I think he's semi, like he said he's semi-retired. He takes power breaks.

• 30:19Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 30:20Speaker 02

Which he's like, I, I just, if something amazing happens and I wanna jump in, I'll jump in. But like, outside of that, it's like, I think he's pretty content and a pretty, he's a very um, spiritual guy. He's pretty remarkable.

• 30:31Mark Normand?

  Yeah, he's a painter now.

• 30:33Speaker 02

Yeah, he paints. He does every, he's, he's amazing. Yeah.

• 30:37Sam Morril?

Did, I mean, what kinda stuff, when you guys talk, what kinda stuff do you talk about?

• 30:41Speaker 02

Um, we'll talk about, he's very macro, very big universe type thing. You guys have no Shanley at all? Were you friends with Shanley at all?

• 30:47Mark Normand?

Love Shanley, we've never met him.

• 30:49Speaker 02

Alright, yeah, so I was very close with him, he was one of my guys.

• 30:51Mark Normand?

  Wow. Wait, you knew him?

• 30:52Speaker 02

I played in his basketball league every week for six years.

• 30:56Sam Morril?

  Larry Sanders is like my.

• 30:57Speaker 02

Larry Sanders I think is the best.

• 30:59Mark Normand?

Gotta get him on the wall.

• 31:00Sam Morril?

Why, why is he not on the wall?

• 31:01Speaker 02

  There he is.

• 31:02Sam Morril?

  Oh, there he is, good.

• 31:03Speaker 02

Um, he's the best. Oh, and he was so close to Bob, so the fact that they're next to each other makes me so happy. He was probably really close to Norm too.

• 31:08Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 31:09Speaker 02

But, he was very spiritual also, so it's like that type of feel where he was like a Buddhist kinda.

• 31:13Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 31:14Speaker 02

He would talk about spiritual stuff all the time.

• 31:15Mark Normand?

  He was enlightened.

• 31:16Speaker 02

Yes, he, Jim has that. I think he was, he was the most famous person in the world, Jim, for so long, I think.

• 31:23Mark Normand?

  Sure, I believe it.

• 31:23Speaker 02

That I wonder, I don't, we can't, we could never relate to what it feels like to be him, because even when we go to dinner or something, when he walks in, you know, when we're like a famous comedian, some people look and like they're excited, but like he is, there's nobody that doesn't know who he is.

• 31:37Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 31:38Speaker 02

So, he can't have a genuine, normal experience, I bet. I don't know, I'm not asking, but it's like, when he walks, I remember when, I was a page at Letterman, and Letterman's security guard would be like, Letterman can't even go get a pack of cigarettes.

• 31:50Mark Normand?

  Sure.

• 31:50Speaker 02

He can't, and like, he wants to be, he wants to, but he can't, and it, that drives him crazy or whatever. So, for Jim, I wonder if it's like, he's amazing, like, he doesn't, he says hello to everybody, he's incredible, you guys would love him.

• 32:02Sam Morril?

It is crazy, I remember I was doing like a interview thing at the Big Three Tournament when that started, the NBA thing.

• 32:07Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 32:07Sam Morril?

  And.

• 32:08Speaker 02

Who'd you interview, like Ice Cube?

• 32:09Sam Morril?

  Everyone, yeah, but then.

• 32:10Speaker 02

  That's so exciting, dude.

• 32:12Sam Morril?

And everyone was like, oh, cool, that guy, oh, Kenyon Martin, this guy was a good player, he's good players, right?

• 32:15Speaker 02

  New Jersey Nets.

• 32:16Sam Morril?

Then Allen Iverson walked in, and it was like that, where everyone just like, everyone was like, huh.

• 32:20Speaker 02

  Yeah, dude.

• 32:20Mark Normand?

  Oh, really?

• 32:20Sam Morril?

It was that type of energy.

• 32:22Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 32:22Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 32:23Speaker 02

AI is definitely a league above, I mean, he's a superstar.

• 32:25Sam Morril?

Everyone's, you get a little starstruck, because it's Allen Iverson.

• 32:28Speaker 02

  Of course.

• 32:29Sam Morril?

  You know?

• 32:29Speaker 02

I feel like also before you meet somebody that we've known, like, in movies or TV or stand-up for a long time, before you meet them, they're the person you've seen on, they're not real person yet.

• 32:38Sam Morril?

  Right, right.

• 32:38Speaker 02

They're like this fictional character, and then when they start talking like normal humans, like, oh, I can like bond with you about real shit.

• 32:43Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 32:44Speaker 02

Like, and then they become human beings and stuff like that.

• 32:46Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 32:47Speaker 02

  Does that make sense?

• 32:47Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 32:48Mark Normand?

  Of course.

• 32:48Sam Morril?

Who else, who was a good Hooper in the Shanley League?

• 32:51Speaker 02

  Um.

• 32:52Mark Normand?

  He's in that.

• 32:53Speaker 02

Who is it? There's a bunch. They, by the way, it was a thing where we were always supposed to, he liked to keep it private, nobody talk about it, and nobody talk about it. And then when he passed away, like, a big article about it came out, in like, a couple magazines. And I was like, oh, the whole point was like to not, whatever, but like, stand-ups that played there that were amazing, uh.

• 33:08Mark Normand?

  Kevin Nealon in that?

• 33:09Speaker 02

Dude, Kevin Nealon, I think, is one of the funniest people in the world.

• 33:12Mark Normand?

Wow, we were just talking about it.

• 33:13Speaker 02

And Adam McKay played in that too, and he's also one of the funniest people in the world, but, Nealon would do these bits, uh, where, um, he would be like, uh, he's just so committed, he commits so hard to bits. He would be near, he was standing near a tree, and he goes, he goes, Ben, did I ever show you my, uh, Coach Giraffe character? And I go, Coach Giraffe? I go, no, let me see it, Kevin. And he ju- literally did this, so imagine, you know, he's six foot three, probably, or four, some of that. And he goes, I need you to get out there, I need you to play three-two difference, you know, make two-three difference, I need two guards up top, three in the bottom. And then he slowly eats a leaf. Just eats a leaf, and never, and he commits like a real monologue from a coach. But slowly eats leaves throughout the whole thing.

• 33:51Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 33:52Speaker 02

  He's so funny.

• 33:54Mark Normand?

  That's great.

• 33:55Speaker 02

And his delivery is so dry, that it's like, so good.

• 33:58Mark Normand?

Yeah. Can we pull up? I know this could be a tough find, but Larry, I'm sorry.

• 34:04Speaker 02

  Gary?

• 34:04Mark Normand?

Gary, I'm thinking Larry Sanders. Gary on The Green Room, going at it with Bo Burnham.

• 34:10Sam Morril?

It's pretty funny. They're both funny.

• 34:12Speaker 02

  With Bo Burnham?

• 34:13Mark Normand?

They kinda got into it a little bit.

• 34:14Sam Morril?

They're kinda getting a little squabbling, but they're both funny, and it's good.

• 34:17Mark Normand?

Yeah. I mean, it's, it's gonna take some, some whittling down, cause it's a long clip, but.

• 34:21Sam Morril?

Yeah, this looks like it's just Bo.

• 34:22Mark Normand?

I think it's out of the, it's right out of the gate. This show was amazing, by the way.

• 34:26Sam Morril?

  It was a good show.

• 34:26Mark Normand?

It was like, tough crowd, but.

• 34:27Speaker 03

He, he shouldn't be able to talk before him.

• 34:30Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah, I, I.

• 34:30Sam Morril?

  Wow, there's a lineup.

• 34:31Speaker 03

  Fair point.

• 34:32Speaker 04

I am, yeah, I'm of the.

• 34:33Mark Normand?

  He's like twenty-two here.

• 34:34Speaker 02

God, he's so young in this.

• 34:36Speaker 04

I just wonder for all of you, uh.

• 34:37Mark Normand?

  Here we go.

• 34:38Speaker 04

  Who are you?

• 34:40Mark Normand?

So that gets to the fun laugh. Young guy with, see, shadlings, he's locking and loading.

• 34:45Speaker 02

No, he's, that's him respecting the joke. Absolutely, that's him respecting the joke.

• 34:49Mark Normand?

  Hold on.

• 34:50Speaker 03

  It's so good.

• 34:51Speaker 02

  See?

• 34:52Speaker 03

It's, it's so good because it's so mutual.

• 34:57Mark Normand?

Oh, the delivery was so perfect. I mean, that was like.

• 35:02Speaker 02

  He's amazing.

• 35:03Mark Normand?

  Jedi shit.

• 35:04Speaker 02

He would work on stuff for a bit also, like, um, uh, like Gary. I don't know if we needed that part.

• 35:09Sam Morril?

I don't know if we needed the guns.

• 35:10Speaker 02

But that's amazing. That's them playing with each other.

• 35:12Mark Normand?

Yeah, I love that scene. That whole episode's great.

• 35:14Speaker 02

So funny. Larry Sanders, I think, is the best comedy ever made.

• 35:17Sam Morril?

  I watch it so much.

• 35:19Speaker 02

  It's, it's perfect.

• 35:20Sam Morril?

  And it starts with Hank.

• 35:21Speaker 02

Oh, my god. Hank Kingsley is on, there's this scene where they do, where he's asking, he's trying to get him to ask, or, he's trying to either ask to be invited for a party, and Hank comes in the room pretending like he has boxing tickets for the same night, or like, he's trying to offer boxing tickets. I wonder if we can find it. There's also one where he like, uh, and he goes in his pocket, and he's like, so Larry Sanders calls him out on it, being like, "Let me see the tickets, let's go." And he goes, "Huh?" He goes, "Let me see the tickets, I'd love to go there." And he's like, I'm butchering this, by the way. If you find it, it's unbelievable.

• 35:53Mark Normand?

Alright. I'm sure we've seen the scene.

• 35:55Speaker 02

  I'm sure you have.

• 35:56Mark Normand?

  But, tell the audience.

• 35:57Speaker 02

The office, um, anyway. But he goes in his pockets, and he only has pills, and he's like, cast embarrassed, and he's like, "I don't, I don't, I don't have, I don't have the tickets."

• 36:06Sam Morril?

I love, I love, I just watched one where he has this long scene with Gloria Steinem, and it's so painful.

• 36:11Speaker 02

  Hank Kingsley does?

• 36:12Sam Morril?

Yeah. And there's this long talk, and he's just like, "I just want you to know, I'm a feminist. I think women can do anything men can do." He goes, "Men, you know, we're, we're a little bit stronger," you know? Has to throw that in. And she's just in, in hell for like, that whole minute. And then she walks away, and he turns to his receptionist and goes, "She's got a great ass."

• 36:27Mark Normand?

  Ah, that's brilliant.

• 36:29Sam Morril?

  It's just perfect.

• 36:30Speaker 02

Appetite wrote on that show. There are so many great writers on that show.

• 36:33Mark Normand?

Oh, yeah. Everybody, like, Young Piven, Young Dicovny, Young.

• 36:36Speaker 02

Sarah was on that show. Sarah did that show.

• 36:38Sam Morril?

Todd Barry the other day. I was like, this is amazing.

• 36:40Speaker 02

I just saw Todd Barry in L.A.

• 36:41Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 36:42Speaker 02

A very, uh, uh, L.A. setting of Todd Barry is very rare.

• 36:45Mark Normand?

  That's gross.

• 36:46Speaker 02

  Very.

• 36:47Mark Normand?

  Heaven's sunlight.

• 36:47Speaker 02

This is it. This is exactly it.

• 36:49Mark Normand?

  Wow, R.I.P. Peters.

• 36:50Speaker 02

I can't believe you found it. This is the exact scene.

• 36:53Mark Normand?

  I hope you're sitting down.

• 36:55Speaker 02

Oh, jeez, I am sitting down.

• 36:58Mark Normand?

Well, then, don't get up, because I have here.

• 37:06Mark Normand?

So good. For tonight's holy thing. Tamper. Fight, and I would like to bring.

• 37:18Mark Normand?

You. Let me see him. That's great. Let me see him.

• 37:24Speaker 05

  Let me see him.

• 37:28Speaker 05

  Let me see.

• 37:31Speaker 05

  This is...

• 37:34Speaker 05

  These are vitamins.

• 37:37Mark Normand?

Please invite me to your party. Tickets, there are no tickets.

• 37:44Speaker 05

Hank, I was just going to invite you when you came in.

• 37:50Mark Normand?

  Hey now.

• 37:51Speaker 02

  Great.

• 37:51Mark Normand?

Ah, so good. That is so funny. He's an amazing actor.

• 37:56Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 37:57Sam Morril?

• 38:41Mark Normand?

You got that right. Thank you. Can you just imagine, this is some sappy shit, but Seinfeld and Gary started, basically around the same time. They kind of came up together.

• 38:54Speaker 02

  Did they?

• 38:54Mark Normand?

  They both did Carson.

• 38:55Speaker 02

  Carson, yeah.

• 38:56Mark Normand?

Very paralleled careers, stand-up wise, and they really fell in love with each other and became fast friends. They both get a sitcom. This is in the same lot. Seinfeld and Larry Sanders Show. And so they got to do the shows together, and then both win Emmys together. I mean, it's pretty wild.

• 39:12Speaker 02

  That's crazy.

• 39:13Mark Normand?

  Yeah, they were tight.

• 39:15Speaker 02

That's amazing. I know he did, uh, so Shanley did these things on the DVD. If you get this black box set of it, where he did these incredible interviews with people from the show. But they were like slow, patient interviews. And he wanted them, if they felt uncomfortable, that's what they were. If they, like, he just let them be what they were and they let them play for a long time.

• 39:33Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 39:34Speaker 02

And they're amazing. Some of the coolest interviews ever, because he's interviewing comics, he's interviewing actresses, like Sharon Stone and like all these people that did the show.

• 39:42Mark Normand?

They dated for a while, too.

• 39:43Speaker 02

  Did they?

• 39:44Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 39:44Speaker 02

And then I think he did it with Seinfeld, or, I think he did it with Seinfeld, yeah, right?

• 39:49Mark Normand?

  I've seen that.

• 39:50Speaker 02

Or was that, maybe that was Seinfeld's coffee?

• 39:52Sam Morril?

  No, no, no.

• 39:53Mark Normand?

  It was way before that.

• 39:54Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then he did one with Seinfeld, but it's, those are the coolest, especially if you like comedy, the coolest. He did one with Tom Petty, and was like, he was boxing with Alec Baldwin.

• 40:04Mark Normand?

  Whoa!

• 40:05Speaker 02

  The Alec Baldwin one?

• 40:06Sam Morril?

Yeah, Baldwin's like kind of trying to elf him.

• 40:07Speaker 02

But he kept, he kept it in because he's like, he always talked, I remember when he did, um, he would always talk about keeping everything in. He's like, "Yeah, but like, even, instead of editing it down, what if we just kept, let the whole thing breathe? Let people understand how he got there, let it be uncomfortable for a bit." When he went near the end, I remember he always was pitching that, like, um, you're talking about how people would edit stuff down. Like, even when he was doing interviews or like things, he was like, "How fun if you just kept that whole thing in."

• 40:30Mark Normand?

Well, it was kind of before-

• 40:31Speaker 02

  That's what podcasts are.

• 40:31Mark Normand?

Yeah, I was gonna say, it's before podcasts, so seeing that kind of stuff was so rare. Uh, I remember on the bench there in the park, and Seinfeld's like, "Don't you hate when everybody says comedians are depressed? Like, people driving bread trucks aren't depressed. Come on, get the hell out of here." And, and he goes, "I'm sensing rage."

• 40:47Mark Normand?

Fucking broke up, it was great.

• 40:48Speaker 02

  It's great.

• 40:49Mark Normand?

He's the king, he's the best delivery.

• 40:51Speaker 02

He's the best guy ever. I miss him so much.

• 40:53Mark Normand?

Another nerdy comedy nugget. Have you seen the Ricky Gervais interview with him?

• 40:57Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 40:57Mark Normand?

  Oh, it's so good.

• 40:59Speaker 02

And Ricky went to his house before he was supposed to.

• 41:00Mark Normand?

  Yes!

• 41:01Speaker 02

Like, in real life, he went to his house-

• 41:02Mark Normand?

  He's annoyed.

• 41:03Speaker 02

  Yes, he should be.

• 41:04Mark Normand?

Yeah, and he kind of calls him out, it's all on tape.

• 41:06Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 41:07Mark Normand?

  It's great.

• 41:07Speaker 02

It's nothing that isn't out there, but I think they were supposed to interview each other for each other's things.

• 41:11Mark Normand?

  Yes, yes.

• 41:12Speaker 02

And Ricky kind of set up and like did everything and like, he didn't have his contacts in yet, or, you know what I mean, like, it was like-

• 41:17Mark Normand?

Pull that up if you can.

• 41:17Speaker 02

  It was like, I-

• 41:18Sam Morril?

  Pretty cringe.

• 41:19Speaker 02

It was, yeah, it was, it wasn't, I don't think it was handled the best way.

• 41:23Mark Normand?

And Gervais does that big high- Pitch laughed and he goes, "Are you really mad? Are you actually mad?" And he's like, "Yeah, yeah, I'm mad. Ah, it's great."

• 41:30Speaker 02

You gotta find the... Yeah, that's in his house.

• 41:32Mark Normand?

There it is. It's part one, because it's right in the beginning. So you can skip all the makeup bullshit and, uh... If you get right to the... What he gets in the house.

• 41:40Sam Morril?

We should have gifted you YouTube Premium. Why did we give you a frickin'...

• 41:43Mark Normand?

  Ah!

• 41:43Sam Morril?

  ...Derrigan?

• 41:46Speaker 02

But didn't he say also that, like, the office couldn't exist unless Sanders came out?

• 41:50Mark Normand?

  Oh, wow, that's a nice...

• 41:51Speaker 02

I think that's what Ricky said.

• 41:52Mark Normand?

  Nice feather in your cap.

• 41:53Speaker 02

That's what I think Ricky said.

• 41:55Mark Normand?

Yeah, you're probably right, because, like, he just, uh...

• 41:59Sam Morril?

Yo, no laugh tracks. A lot of those kind of awkward, just let it play out scenes, I mean...

• 42:02Mark Normand?

Right. Wow, he's so young and chubby.

• 42:07Speaker 02

  Yeah, it's his kitchen.

• 42:08Mark Normand?

He's in the house. Such an LA house.

• 42:10Speaker 02

  It's his living room.

• 42:11Sam Morril?

Is it like a British thing to wear the muscle tee when you don't have muscles? Because that was like a Simon Cowell thing, too.

• 42:16Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 42:17Speaker 02

Going through his fridge? That's crazy.

• 42:20Mark Normand?

  Oh, here it is.

• 42:24Mark Normand?

  He's already directing.

• 42:26Speaker 06

  It's your house.

• 42:27Speaker 05

Why, were you telling me that was looking this way?

• 42:29Speaker 06

  No.

• 42:29Speaker 05

Who was looking around here when I was walking in? When I was standing out there, didn't you see that I was coming, walking in?

• 42:35Speaker 06

  No.

• 42:36Speaker 05

  Is that you?

• 42:36Speaker 06

  No.

• 42:37Speaker 05

Hold on. Before I shake your hand and say...

• 42:41Speaker 05

First you said, "No, that wasn't me."

• 42:43Speaker 06

  I didn't see you. I swear I didn't see you.

• 42:45Speaker 05

Oh, now you're telling me it was me.

• 42:46Mark Normand?

  He's like a lawyer.

• 42:47Speaker 06

That's true. But you said, "Is it you that looked out there?" What I was doing was talking to my producer that was here.

• 42:54Speaker 05

Right, because you were standing about here looking this way?

• 42:56Speaker 06

Yeah. Well, this is the way to tell if it was me or not.

• 42:58Speaker 05

  Touch me.

• 42:59Speaker 06

  Did it look like me?

• 43:02Speaker 05

  And it smells like you.

• 43:03Speaker 06

  Then it might be me.

• 43:04Speaker 05

  I doubt that it's you.

• 43:05Speaker 06

  What are you doing?

• 43:05Speaker 05

It's my contact lenses. I don't... That's why I have these on. These are my prescription sunglasses.

• 43:09Speaker 06

  Okay. Hi.

• 43:10Speaker 05

  Pleasure to see you.

• 43:13Speaker 06

  Gary Shandling.

• 43:13Speaker 05

I've never met Ricky before. So this is actually, uh...

• 43:19Speaker 05

  Thrill? Uncomfortable.

• 43:21Speaker 02

  Great, great.

• 43:23Speaker 05

And yet exciting because there will never be, as they say, this first moment again when I meet you the first time.

• 43:29Speaker 06

Well, where do you want to do this interview then?

• 43:31Speaker 05

I'll go on. I found why the kitchen sink isn't so bad.

• 43:33Mark Normand?

Alright, alright, alright, we can keep going. But yeah, these are, these rinkage, he does the one with Larry David, they're all great.

• 43:39Speaker 02

  Amazing.

• 43:40Mark Normand?

Sanders is the Sanders. Shandling is the king.

• 43:42Speaker 02

The best. I miss him so much.

• 43:44Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 43:45Speaker 02

  He's so funny.

• 43:45Sam Morril?

I mean, what was your relationship like with him?

• 43:48Speaker 02

Um, I mean, we would see each other every week for a long time. He had a basketball game. So like, we went there. Sarah was the one who invited me over there for the first one. And I was really young. I'd just moved to LA and Sarah played my sister in a movie. And I played basketball, back then I played basketball a lot, like multiple times a week, my favorite thing to do. And then you get older and your knees hurt more, you know, it becomes harder to do. Um, and so, you never, we never talked business. We all just like do, like, whatever. We really, when we're playing, we're really, everybody's really trying, really playing. And then afterwards, we'd all watch sports together and we'd, um, that's when we'd do bits and everything. And the funniest people in the world are just in the room. And then, you know, it becomes normal after a while because you're there every week. But he was the best. I could text him, I could talk to him about stuff.

• 44:28Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 44:28Speaker 02

Have like real conversations. We'd go on hikes and talk about real stuff. He's very, he just has a grasp on life and even looking at things, it's in such like a

• 44:36Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 44:37Speaker 02

A level that's so much more zoomed out than most other people. So you just want to listen to him, stuff like that. There's a, you want to hear a sappy, I'll tell you, you said-

• 44:44Mark Normand?

  Please, sap it up.

• 44:45Speaker 02

Okay, so when he passed away, it was very sad, very sad. And, um-

• 44:49Mark Normand?

  He died?

• 44:50Speaker 02

  He did die.

• 44:51Mark Normand?

  Ah.

• 44:51Speaker 02

Did you, you didn't kill him, right?

• 44:53Mark Normand?

  No, it wasn't me.

• 44:54Speaker 02

Alright, wasn't you? Um, alright, so we, there's a funeral and there was this crazy funeral where like, uh, like, everybody from Sanders were there, it was crazy. And then, um, afterwards, I ate with Wayne Fetterman and Sarah.

• 45:06Mark Normand?

  Hmm.

• 45:07Speaker 02

And, uh, we were like talking about Gary, it was amazing. Wayne had known him forever, Sarah had known him forever. And then I went home, I know this is probably not the right audience for this, but-

• 45:14Mark Normand?

  Please.

• 45:14Speaker 02

I went home and I lived in like a small apartment and I had a, I had a guitar and I thought, um, I said, I'm gonna, this is so stupid, I can't believe I'm gonna do this. I said, okay. Gary, if you're there, I know this is stupid, I can't believe I'm saying this, you're dead, I'm even thinking, I remember even saying, I was like, why would you fucking haunt me? You have so much people that you're closer than I am. But if you're here- Like, shh, do something or make me understand that you're here. And I sat down for like thirty seconds and obviously nothing happened. And I started cracking up so loud, being like, oh my god, if he was here, that's exactly what he would fucking do. So funny. And then my guitar made a noise. On the other side of the fucking room.

• 45:55Mark Normand?

  No.

• 45:55Speaker 02

After I laughed and was like, of course, my guitar made a noise. Nobody was near it. It was just me in the apartment.

• 46:00Mark Normand?

  Yee.

• 46:01Speaker 02

  Crazy.

• 46:02Mark Normand?

  That's beyond.

• 46:03Speaker 02

And I immediately called Sarah and was like, you'll never fucking, we, this is insane.

• 46:07Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 46:08Speaker 02

  Isn't that crazy?

• 46:08Mark Normand?

  Kooky.

• 46:09Speaker 02

  Very kooky.

• 46:10Mark Normand?

  Spooky.

• 46:10Speaker 02

  Kooky, one more.

• 46:13Mark Normand?

  Doogie? Good album.

• 46:14Speaker 02

  Way off.

• 46:14Mark Normand?

Ah, shit. Well, last, last nugget on, on Shanley and then I'll, I'll put it to bed.

• 46:20Speaker 02

  Please.

• 46:21Mark Normand?

Do you see the documentary about him?

• 46:23Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 46:23Mark Normand?

  Apetow made, it's great.

• 46:24Speaker 02

  It was great. Gorgeous.

• 46:24Mark Normand?

  My favorite.

• 46:25Sam Morril?

Every doc he's made on comedy lately has been.

• 46:27Speaker 02

  Yeah, Apetow is.

• 46:28Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 46:29Sam Morril?

  So good too.

• 46:29Speaker 02

He is someone who loves comedy.

• 46:31Mark Normand?

The first half is always great. But, so, uh, he always does two-parters. But, okay. Funny people, four-parter. But.

• 46:40Speaker 02

Now you can't get him on the podcast. What are you doing?

• 46:42Mark Normand?

Oh, we've had him many times. He's a friend.

• 46:44Sam Morril?

  There you go, friend.

• 46:44Mark Normand?

But, he would told, his wife wanted to get married, or his girl, his girlfriend wanted to get married. We gotta get married, we gotta get married, you know.

• 46:51Speaker 02

  Gary did.

• 46:52Mark Normand?

Yeah, Gary's girlfriend's like, we have to get married. You're like forty-eight.

• 46:55Speaker 02

  Linda.

• 46:56Mark Normand?

Was that it, was that it?

• 46:56Speaker 02

  Maybe, maybe, keep going.

• 46:57Mark Normand?

So, he's like, ah, I don't wanna get married, I'm scared. She's like, you gotta marry me. And he goes, how about this? I'll marry you when the house is finished being built. And she was like, done, that, that works. And he's like, alright. And he kept adding wings to the house, just to get out of the marriage. He was like, oh, the pool's not done. Oh, we gotta, the garage is halfway. And then she'd be like, well, the garage is done. He's like, I had it in the guest room, to the third floor. Like, so he kept building and then he died.

• 47:21Speaker 02

That's so funny. Yeah, his house was never done. He always talked about how much more work he had to do to his house.

• 47:25Mark Normand?

What a, what a great loophole.

• 47:27Sam Morril?

That is a commitment foe. That is crazy.

• 47:29Mark Normand?

  I love it.

• 47:29Speaker 02

  That's so funny.

• 47:30Sam Morril?

  You love it, cuz.

• 47:31Mark Normand?

I'm a commitment foe. I caved, cuz I can't afford to build more house. But, uh.

• 47:36Speaker 02

Ran out of things to build?

• 47:37Mark Normand?

  Yeah. But, so, so cool.

• 47:39Speaker 02

I love this is a love fest for Gary. What a cool thing, cuz a lot of people probably, listen to you, probably don't even know about Larry Sanders.

• 47:44Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 47:44Sam Morril?

I think a lot of them know. We have a lot of comedy nerd.

• 47:46Speaker 02

  Alright, good, good, good.

• 47:47Sam Morril?

  Yeah, I mean, I.

• 47:48Speaker 02

An incredible stand-up too. We haven't even talked about a stand-up. He was so strong.

• 47:51Sam Morril?

If you haven't seen the Larry Sanders Show, that's your rec for this week.

• 47:54Mark Normand?

  You got that right.

• 47:55Sam Morril?

  Great show.

• 47:56Speaker 02

  Amazing show.

• 47:56Mark Normand?

He's got a joke, uh, oh, I'm gonna fuck this up. He goes, you know, I fucked, uh, Miss Georgia. And then a guy goes, really? Goes, well. Foreman is Georgia. He goes, "Well, really?" He goes, "All right, it was George Foreman."

• 48:12Mark Normand?

Norm MacDonald, the king, the funniest guy ever, quotes that as like, "I can see how every joke is constructed. I've been doing comedy so long." He's like, "I have no idea how he wrote that joke."

• 48:22Speaker 02

  Really?

• 48:23Mark Normand?

Yeah, he's just like, "That joke is on another level of joke writing."

• 48:25Speaker 02

Did you have Norm on this podcast?

• 48:27Sam Morril?

No, we never did. This started after he passed, I think. Oh, no, we, no, we-

• 48:32Mark Normand?

  He died while-

• 48:32Sam Morril?

We got the news while we were rolling.

• 48:34Speaker 02

  Really?

• 48:35Mark Normand?

  That was tough.

• 48:35Speaker 02

That's gotta be- did you get it on camera?

• 48:37Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 48:38Speaker 02

Wow, that must be so hard.

• 48:40Mark Normand?

It was September 14th, I wanna say? September 13th? Give it a go, 'cause I still remember the date.

• 48:45Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 48:46Mark Normand?

  11.

• 48:47Sam Morril?

Yeah, we just had spade on and we should've, we should've asked-

• 48:49Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 48:50Sam Morril?

We should've asked some more Norm stories. Colin Quinn-

• 48:52Speaker 02

  Oh my god, dude.

• 48:53Mark Normand?

  Bam!

• 48:54Speaker 02

Are you good with dates? Are you, are you that-

• 48:55Mark Normand?

  I'm autistic.

• 48:56Speaker 02

Are you, are you for real?

• 48:57Mark Normand?

Well, no, I just remember that date. It's my birthday's four days later, too.

• 49:00Speaker 02

  My birthday's September 15th.

• 49:01Mark Normand?

  Hey, Virgo!

• 49:03Speaker 02

  Come on.

• 49:04Sam Morril?

  Virgo here, too.

• 49:05Speaker 02

What's your birthday? What are we doing here? This is great, isn't it?

• 49:08Sam Morril?

  August 29th.

• 49:09Speaker 02

Amazing. We're really doing it. What's your favorite Norm joke?

• 49:14Mark Normand?

I love the joke, I mean, I can't, I can't pick one, but my, one of my favorites is,

• 49:20Mark Normand?

he goes to the gay pride parade.

• 49:22Speaker 02

  I was gonna say that.

• 49:23Mark Normand?

  Oh my god.

• 49:24Speaker 02

  Are you fucking kidding me?

• 49:25Mark Normand?

That joke is, is like established on a lot of my joke-

• 49:27Speaker 02

Can you do it? Don't say what it's like, just do it.

• 49:29Mark Normand?

I'm gonna fuck it up, but it's like, he's at the gay pride parade, a mom had a sign that said, "I'm proud of my gay son." Or, "I'm proud that my son is gay," or something, and he's like, "Well, what are you proud of?" It's not an accomplishment. You know, it's, it's like, if you're like, "My son graduated from law school at Harvard." You're like, "All right, that's proud of, that's worthy of being proud of." Now you're just like, "He loves cock."

• 49:49Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 49:50Mark Normand?

Something like that. I, you know, I can't do it like you do.

• 49:52Sam Morril?

Yeah, no, you're butchering it, but it's like, uh-

• 49:54Speaker 02

Yeah, I know you're butchering it.

• 49:55Mark Normand?

  I butchered it.

• 49:56Speaker 02

Yeah, no, you're butchering it, it's hilarious.

• 49:58Sam Morril?

I could, I would've done better. I, it's his delivery is what makes it.

• 50:01Mark Normand?

Pull it up! Are we watching too many videos? Sorry.

• 50:04Speaker 02

Is this where you guys, do you guys watch a lot of videos usually?

• 50:06Sam Morril?

Not usually, but this is, this is fun.

• 50:08Mark Normand?

Oh, here it is! Wow! Peters is on fire!

• 50:11Sam Morril?

We can get rid of Salik.

• 50:12Mark Normand?

  Salik is canned.

• 50:14Speaker 07

And I saw in it, there were these, uh, old men and old ladies, like, with these, uh, signs that said, "We are proud of our gay son." That's an odd thing to be proud of, you know, because it's not an achievement, you know? It's not like something you work all your life to be gay or any of that. Hey, uh, Bill.

• 50:30Mark Normand?

  That's a great point.

• 50:31Speaker 07

My kid, oh my god, we're proud of him, Johnny. He, uh, graduated from Harvard, you know? Uh, uh, now he's articling over at a law firm, and, uh, oh yeah, he loves cock!

• 50:42Mark Normand?

I mean, that's, that's, first of all, that observation is brilliant. Anyone would see "I'm proud of my gay son" and go, "Oh, that's nice. Mom's proud of her son." "She's not homophobic, that's nice." He goes, "Why are you proud of him? It's not an achievement." I mean, it's a brilliant-

• 50:55Sam Morril?

We're kind of mocking the idea-

• 50:56Mark Normand?

  He caught it.

• 50:57Sam Morril?

  -of parades.

• 50:58Mark Normand?

  That's, that too.

• 50:59Sam Morril?

It's kind of taking down the idea of like, "Well, you were born this way, why are you pr-" I mean, it's good to like, you know? I don't know. It, it, it's a, it's a observation I hadn't heard. I love that, and I love Doug.

• 51:08Speaker 02

He's so funny. He's also so amazing at like, the joke is this, and he'll just make you go here for like, five fucking minutes.

• 51:14Mark Normand?

  Well, that's, yeah, that too.

• 51:15Speaker 02

And then come back and crawl. That's my, well, some of my favorite stuff that he did was like, "The joke is here, he could easily say the punchline in about 20 seconds or 10 seconds."

• 51:22Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 51:22Speaker 02

He will take a long walk around to get to that point, and then it makes it so much funnier.

• 51:28Mark Normand?

Fun nugget. The moth story, you know, it's five minutes long? That's a one longer-

• 51:32Speaker 02

  Great, that's an incredible joke.

• 51:34Mark Normand?

  It's probably his like masterpiece.

• 51:35Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 51:35Mark Normand?

But the, the moth joke is one line that Colin Quinn told him, he's like, "Hey, you ever heard that joke? Why'd the moth go to the therapist?" He goes, "Well, what are you in here for?" He goes, "The light was on."

• 51:42Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 51:43Mark Normand?

That's the whole joke. But he made it five minutes long because Conan said, "Oh, our guest didn't show. Can you stretch a little?"

• 51:48Speaker 02

  No!

• 51:49Mark Normand?

So he took that joke and just stretched, that was on the fly.

• 51:52Speaker 02

  Is that true?

• 51:52Mark Normand?

  That's true!

• 51:53Sam Morril?

  That's crazy.

• 51:54Speaker 02

You could tell he was improvising that shit too.

• 51:56Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 51:56Speaker 02

Just like, he was going in weird directions.

• 51:58Mark Normand?

  Shaky.

• 51:59Speaker 02

  And that joke is amazing.

• 52:00Sam Morril?

Into like knowing when to, I mean, the funniest people ever, but also knowing when to be the straight man, like a great host. But, uh, I was gonna say the Norm joke from, uh, his last Letterman set.

• 52:10Mark Normand?

  Oh.

• 52:11Sam Morril?

When he did the, the Germany versus the world.

• 52:13Mark Normand?

  Amazing.

• 52:14Speaker 02

Oh, incredible. That's also the set where he gave him a hug and told him how much he meant to him. That was an incredible moment.

• 52:18Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 52:19Speaker 02

  That was an incredible moment.

• 52:20Mark Normand?

Letterman didn't give much back, if I can be so bold.

• 52:22Sam Morril?

I think he was, I think he's not good with emotions, man.

• 52:25Speaker 02

You can't look people in the eyes.

• 52:26Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 52:27Mark Normand?

  What are you talking about?

• 52:28Sam Morril?

Mark wrote me a very long, I was shocked the message he wrote me yesterday.

• 52:31Mark Normand?

Well, I get, I get sappy on a plane. I get emotions on a plane.

• 52:34Speaker 02

But you won't say it to him, you'll email.

• 52:36Mark Normand?

  I'll text you.

• 52:36Speaker 02

I even said the way that you gave your gift to, to your friend was the most, you didn't look at him and go, we got you someone.

• 52:42Sam Morril?

  I am bad with that.

• 52:43Speaker 02

Literally, literally gave it to him, didn't look.

• 52:45Mark Normand?

  Why are we getting along?

• 52:47Speaker 02

Matt, so you, he, we were right here, me and my friend Emmy, uh, were right here and he comes in and then, um, has a bag, takes out his dog, I think, or some, no. And he had, he goes, yeah, and this is for you. Then we got this for you. Uh, we, no, this is for you. We got it. Didn't look at him and Matt's enjoying it, doesn't look at him to see if he's enjoying it. And Matt understands what this relationship is and goes.

• 53:08Mark Normand?

  He gets it.

• 53:08Speaker 02

He just nods and I was like, and then we're like, oh, that's a cool gift. And Matt's like, yeah, like, yeah, yeah.

• 53:14Mark Normand?

  Well, he's, he's.

• 53:15Sam Morril?

What's your alternative? I'm like, check it out, dude.

• 53:17Speaker 02

  Well, you didn't even like.

• 53:18Sam Morril?

  You're she too, right?

• 53:18Speaker 02

You didn't even, you didn't even look at him. You didn't even connect.

• 53:21Sam Morril?

I'm sorry, I didn't look at you for that. We appreciate you very much.

• 53:23Speaker 02

Cause it must've been awkward for you to give a gift.

• 53:25Sam Morril?

  I'm not good at gifts.

• 53:26Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 53:26Sam Morril?

I mean, I'm, I'm good at getting gifts. I'm not good at the giving the gifts.

• 53:30Speaker 02

I'm bad. I hate receiving gifts too.

• 53:31Sam Morril?

No, I mean, I mean getting like picking them out for someone.

• 53:34Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 53:34Sam Morril?

  No, no, I'm not.

• 53:35Speaker 02

I love getting gifts for people or I'm good at getting gifts for people like who like specific things that I'm all right at. But you're right, giving and then receiving. I'm not good at getting compliments either. I'm very, I get awkward when, uh, someone says something nice. I have to like find a way to make it about them immediately.

• 53:48Mark Normand?

  I understand that too.

• 53:49Speaker 02

I'm like, you're like, oh, good show. Oh, man, you were, dude, I saw you two weeks ago.

• 53:52Sam Morril?

He wrote me a long message. I was, I was shocked.

• 53:54Mark Normand?

  I mean, it was a, a text.

• 53:56Speaker 02

Let me get this out. This is good.

• 53:57Mark Normand?

  All right, all right.

• 53:58Sam Morril?

It was a text like this long, which was all like how much he appreciated like building this thing with me. And I was like, oh, wow. I'm not, you're not like that. No, it was, it was surprising.

• 54:05Speaker 02

Do you think you're changing a little bit as you get older?

• 54:07Mark Normand?

No, I just think it was.

• 54:08Sam Morril?

  I think you are.

• 54:09Mark Normand?

It felt necessary. Maybe I'm changing.

• 54:11Sam Morril?

I think you are. I think you'd be, you're more comfortable with your feelings than you were.

• 54:14Mark Normand?

  Guys, I have cancer.

• 54:15Speaker 02

  Wow. Jesus.

• 54:17Sam Morril?

Well, you look like a lump.

• 54:21Mark Normand?

I don't know, had to be said and it felt like we left abruptly, like we did a podcast, then he got into a car, I got into a car, I went to the airport.

• 54:27Speaker 02

I love it. We're getting older, we're all getting older.

• 54:30Mark Normand?

It was too abrupt, so I felt like I had, I needed a ta-da at the end.

• 54:34Speaker 02

  You need the button.

• 54:35Sam Morril?

What are you uncomfortable with? Like what makes you?

• 54:37Speaker 02

The dog is unbelievable. Absolutely in the zone. I'm not good at getting compliments, I'm not, uh, receiving gifts I'm bad at, because I'm afraid I'm not gonna like it before I open it.

• 54:46Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 54:47Speaker 02

  I'm like, oh boy.

• 54:48Mark Normand?

Don't get me, gifts, it just piles up, unless I really need it.

• 54:52Speaker 02

  Right, right, right.

• 54:52Mark Normand?

  A good hairline.

• 54:54Speaker 02

  I do.

• 54:55Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 54:55Speaker 02

  Oh, thanks.

• 54:56Mark Normand?

I was trying to compliment you.

• 54:57Speaker 02

Thank you, brother, I appreciate it.

• 54:58Mark Normand?

Yeah, there you go, you took that.

• 54:58Speaker 02

You guys have great hair too, it's fun to see both of your hair.

• 55:01Mark Normand?

  It's a bird's nest.

• 55:02Speaker 02

  No, it's great, that's what I do. I can't talk, they'll be like, oh, that's whatever.

• 55:05Mark Normand?

That's flowy, black, thick, thick, black head of hair.

• 55:10Sam Morril?

What's like a peeve for you? What bothers you?

• 55:13Speaker 02

That people, that just people do in general?

• 55:14Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 55:15Speaker 02

Ooh, that's a good question. Any peeves at all about anything that bothers me?

• 55:19Mark Normand?

I got one to buy you some time there.

• 55:20Speaker 02

  Go, please.

• 55:21Mark Normand?

All right. How about this one? The guy who doesn't know the answer to something, he asks you, you don't know either, and then he gets mad.

• 55:29Speaker 02

Oh, that's good, I like that.

• 55:30Mark Normand?

This happened to me today. The guy's like, uh...

• 55:33Speaker 02

  What's the example?

• 55:33Mark Normand?

Well, the guy's like, uh, "When, when does this, uh, place open?" Or he said something like that, "When does it close?" And I go, "Oh, I don't know." I try to give a little, "Oh," show, because I don't want to be the guy who goes, "I don't fucking know, get out of here." So I go like, "Ah," I go, "Ah, I don't know, four, five, I'm not really sure," and he goes, "Thanks a lot." And I'm like, "Well, you didn't know either, dick cheese, what the fuck?"

• 55:55Speaker 02

I like, I guess there's more industry stuff that makes me, like if people say like, uh, they're like, "Oh, the Ben Schwartz of it all," there's sentences that I can't read anymore in emails.

• 56:04Mark Normand?

  Ugh.

• 56:04Speaker 02

Like, "The Ben Schwartz of it all," or like...

• 56:06Sam Morril?

  What does that even mean?

• 56:07Speaker 02

It means like, let's, let's say we're talking about Larry Sanders Show, like, "Yeah, we'll have a meeting about the Larry Sanders Show of it all," and I was like, "Oh."

• 56:13Mark Normand?

  Oh, I like that.

• 56:13Speaker 02

There's just some sentences where I can't, I can't read them anymore. And oftentimes when we have a phone call, if it's a lot of people for business, uh, like, I just want to get to what we're talking about, I was ready, you know what I mean? Instead of, but like, there's so much time that is wasted just like, saying hello and catching up. I was like, "Oh, let's talk about what we need to get to and let's move." But a lot of stuff in email, business-wise, I can't, I have, I have to like, read that part quickly.

• 56:39Mark Normand?

  Hundred percent.

• 56:39Sam Morril?

This was a recent peeve of mine, that in the business-type emails, "Thanks for understanding."

• 56:44Speaker 02

Oh yeah, we'll circle back soon.

• 56:46Sam Morril?

  Circle back.

• 56:47Speaker 02

Also, when I don't get a role, they said that they went a different way. I'm so tired of hearing they went a different way, but not telling me why.

• 56:54Mark Normand?

  Yes, yes.

• 56:55Speaker 02

  I was like, oh.

• 56:55Mark Normand?

They love you, but they're going a different way. So they don't love you.

• 56:58Speaker 02

You crushed it, but they're going a different way.

• 57:00Sam Morril?

They're an executive, they could give me something.

• 57:02Mark Normand?

  I know, I know.

• 57:03Sam Morril?

  They're such a big fan.

• 57:04Mark Normand?

There's a couple others. Let's table that. Let's put a pin in it. Let's unpack this.

• 57:09Speaker 02

These are true things that I can't do anymore. Pin, table it, you're saying all the ones.

• 57:14Mark Normand?

  Unpack is big.

• 57:15Sam Morril?

Biological father, this is a fucking...

• 57:17Mark Normand?

  Let's unpack this.

• 57:19Speaker 02

I agree, though, so those are the things I'm like, for business-wise, sometimes I'm like, I can't do it anymore, I've been doing this for too long, where it's like, please don't, I can't, don't do that.

• 57:27Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 57:27Speaker 02

  I can't do that.

• 57:28Mark Normand?

You ever heard that Bill Burr thing? He says, those, those, uh, LA meetings you gotta do over the phone, like a general or whatever it is? He goes, "I throw my phone across the bed while I'm laying on the bed, and I cover my eyes and I just wait till it's over." So like, unless they ask me a question, I, I'll answer it. But if they don't, I just wait and like,

• 57:48Speaker 02

  That's amazing.

• 57:49Mark Normand?

And then I wait till it's over, and I totally understand what you're saying.

• 57:51Speaker 02

Do you guys have Top Comics? What's your favorite comic of all time?

• 57:54Mark Normand?

Come on, what are we doing? I'll be like Cosby's later work.

• 57:59Sam Morril?

I mean, we, we love, we, we praise David Tell no end on this.

• 58:03Speaker 02

Oh yeah, my god, David Tell when I was a kid on Comedy Central was like the biggest thing, and he was a guy that played at The Cellar a lot, too, I don't know if he still does.

• 58:10Sam Morril?

Still there all the time, yeah.

• 58:11Speaker 02

But he had a, what was his show on Comedy Central called?

• 58:13Mark Normand?

  Insomniac.

• 58:14Speaker 02

Yeah dude, that, for a kid that loved comedy, I was obsessed with that show.

• 58:18Mark Normand?

  Me too.

• 58:18Speaker 02

And then I remember I saw, I went to the Comedy Cellar when I was finally old enough, and the first time I ever saw a stand-up show that was like, me as a kid going to The Cellar, Colin Quinn got fired from SNL that day.

• 58:27Mark Normand?

  Whoa!

• 58:29Speaker 02

And he brought the newspaper, I think, that said that he was getting fired, and it was like such a crazy,

• 58:35Mark Normand?

  Whoa, crazy.

• 58:36Speaker 02

Yeah, it was like a, it was a, I don't know if he got fired, but he was, I'm assuming he was, because I think he did a bit about it.

• 58:40Mark Normand?

That must have been the 90s, right, or early 2000s?

• 58:43Speaker 02

Must have been, yeah. But I remember that set, and I was like there, and he was right there with the newspaper, and I was like, oh my god, I love this guy from SNL and his stand-up, and then that. But David Tell as a kid was one of the funniest things in the universe.

• 58:54Mark Normand?

  Oh, of course.

• 58:55Speaker 02

  So cool.

• 58:56Mark Normand?

  98, wow.

• 58:57Speaker 02

  There you go.

• 58:57Mark Normand?

Damn, so what were you, 10?

• 58:59Speaker 02

  Seventeen, sixteen, seventeen.

• 59:01Mark Normand?

You're going to the cellar at sixteen, seventeen?

• 59:04Speaker 02

  I guess so.

• 59:04Mark Normand?

That's fucking awesome. You're a New York kid.

• 59:06Speaker 02

Yeah, I grew up in Riverdale.

• 59:07Mark Normand?

  Ah!

• 59:08Speaker 02

Riverdale, then went to Westchester, and then I was living in Manhattan when I was doing UCB after college.

• 59:13Mark Normand?

  Hell, yeah.

• 59:14Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 59:15Mark Normand?

  Riverdale.

• 59:16Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 59:17Mark Normand?

You're one of those fucking kids that lives up in Riverdale. That's a taxi driver.

• 59:22Sam Morril?

What, uh, do you have any recs otherwise in Larry Sanders? Cause sometimes we do recs on this show.

• 59:26Speaker 02

Oh, yeah. My favorite comedy shows of all time?

• 59:28Mark Normand?

  Anything, any, movies, drama.

• 59:30Speaker 02

  Oh, my god.

• 59:31Mark Normand?

  Songs, porn.

• 59:33Speaker 02

Tyler Creator album's pretty amazing if I remember that, the new one. Um, the TV shows that usually I say are Larry Sanders, Simpsons, I think is probably the most influential show for me.

• 59:43Mark Normand?

  Love it.

• 59:44Speaker 02

I think it taught me how to write. I write a lot of movies and TV shows for places.

• 59:47Sam Morril?

  Killers in that writer's room.

• 59:48Speaker 02

  Dude.

• 59:48Mark Normand?

  Up and at them.

• 59:49Speaker 02

  One, incredible.

• 59:50Mark Normand?

  The goggles do nothing.

• 59:51Speaker 02

Incredible. UK Office is a top five show for me, I think.

• 59:54Mark Normand?

  Love it, love it.

• 59:55Sam Morril?

  Have you met Gervais?

• 59:56Speaker 02

No. I haven't met him. Have you guys met him?

• 59:58Sam Morril?

  He's met him before.

• 1:00:00Mark Normand?

  Yeah, we've, we've, uh, DM'd a little.

• 1:00:02Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:00:03Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:03Speaker 02

  How'd that go?

• 1:00:04Mark Normand?

Good, actually. He was very nice and complimentary of my dumb tweets.

• 1:00:07Speaker 02

  I love it.

• 1:00:08Mark Normand?

Also, I got a joke on the Globes.

• 1:00:10Speaker 02

  From him?

• 1:00:11Mark Normand?

  I sent him, I-

• 1:00:11Speaker 02

Oh, I used to, I did some, I wrote for, uh, like, the Oscars one year.

• 1:00:15Mark Normand?

  Oh, really?

• 1:00:15Speaker 02

Yeah, I used to, so I used to freelance jokes for Letterman's monologue.

• 1:00:19Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:00:19Speaker 02

And I used to freelance jokes for SNL Weekend Update. So I was writing jokes a lot when I was younger, and so every now and then I get a job to do that for people.

• 1:00:26Mark Normand?

  Uh-huh.

• 1:00:26Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:00:27Sam Morril?

Who'd you write for for the Globes?

• 1:00:29Speaker 02

I wrote for the Oscars. I wrote for Hugh Jackman. I wrote his musical opening number.

• 1:00:32Sam Morril?

  Wow.

• 1:00:33Speaker 02

Do you remember that musical opening number?

• 1:00:34Mark Normand?

  Pull it up.

• 1:00:35Speaker 02

So it was Dan Harmon, Rob Schrob, and I writing it.

• 1:00:39Mark Normand?

  Rob Schrob?

• 1:00:40Speaker 02

Yeah, dude, he's fucking a genius.

• 1:00:41Sam Morril?

Dan Harmon is, must have been fun to write.

• 1:00:43Speaker 02

It was when he was trying to cast Community, so Community-

• 1:00:46Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 1:00:47Speaker 02

So we wrote this musical. It's gonna be too long, but it's, it won an Emmy, so I won an Emmy for writing for the Oscars.

• 1:00:53Mark Normand?

  Man, he's a hunk, huh?

• 1:00:54Speaker 02

He's great, and- The full callback is that he, I did a show, uh, I do two shows in New York every year. And he came to one of my shows at the Beacon as a-

• 1:01:03Mark Normand?

  Oh!

• 1:01:04Speaker 02

Like, I hadn't talked to him in years, and then he came and watched one of the shows at the Beacon, and he was-

• 1:01:09Sam Morril?

It's like the best venue ever.

• 1:01:11Speaker 02

Dude, I played, I think I played almost every theater, theater in New York now.

• 1:01:15Mark Normand?

  Nice.

• 1:01:16Speaker 02

And that's my, and that's my favorite one.

• 1:01:17Sam Morril?

  It's class.

• 1:01:17Mark Normand?

  Easily.

• 1:01:18Speaker 02

Yeah, I did Radio City, which was fucking enormous.

• 1:01:21Mark Normand?

Oh, that's too big, I think.

• 1:01:23Speaker 02

For improv, imagine four people doing improv on there.

• 1:01:25Mark Normand?

  Yeah, that's crazy.

• 1:01:26Speaker 02

It went great, but I was like, I, this is, I think we pushed it.

• 1:01:29Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:01:29Speaker 02

I think we pushed it a bit.

• 1:01:30Sam Morril?

Something's lost when you lose, the Beacon's huge, but it still feels kinda intimate.

• 1:01:34Speaker 02

Beacon feels like you're talking to friends.

• 1:01:36Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:36Speaker 02

You don't need screens, you don't need any of that stuff.

• 1:01:39Mark Normand?

  That's true.

• 1:01:39Speaker 02

Anyway, it was the recession, so we did a recession musical opening number.

• 1:01:43Mark Normand?

  You wrote this whole thing?

• 1:01:44Speaker 02

Me, Dan Harmon, Rob Trout, but Dan really did the, I got like, there's a bit that I wrote, which was probably coming up, which is he brings Anne Hathaway on stage.

• 1:01:53Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:01:54Speaker 02

And I wrote that whole part of the song.

• 1:01:55Mark Normand?

  Wow!

• 1:01:56Speaker 02

And then I wrote a bunch of jokes for him to tell as like a monologue.

• 1:01:59Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:00Speaker 02

And my joke was gonna be the opening of the Oscars, and it was lined up, and then the, the writing team, I guess, that wasn't us three, uh, nixed it and put something else there, but I was so excited that I was gonna get jokes on too.

• 1:02:12Mark Normand?

  Of course.

• 1:02:12Speaker 02

But I started my career by writing jokes for Letterman and all that.

• 1:02:15Mark Normand?

  That's crazy.

• 1:02:16Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:02:16Sam Morril?

Remember Frost Nixon? That was a cool movie.

• 1:02:18Mark Normand?

  That was good.

• 1:02:18Speaker 02

  Oh, it was good.

• 1:02:19Sam Morril?

  That is crazy.

• 1:02:20Speaker 02

  I wrote this whole thing.

• 1:02:20Mark Normand?

  Oh, that's good.

• 1:02:21Speaker 02

And I did it like UCB where he pulled her up from the crowd and he interacts, like, cause the upright citizens brigade, me and Hot Sauce would always like, do like, we would, before we did a set, we would start a heckle.

• 1:02:31Mark Normand?

  Uh-huh.

• 1:02:31Speaker 02

And I would come out there and we would, they would heckle me, and then they would join me on stage, and then we'd do an improv show.

• 1:02:35Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:35Speaker 02

So it kinda starts where like, he pulls her up on stage.

• 1:02:38Mark Normand?

  Wow!

• 1:02:39Speaker 02

And they kinda like make fun of, whatever, anyway.

• 1:02:41Mark Normand?

How old were you to hear?

• 1:02:43Speaker 02

This is right, I bet it was-

• 1:02:47Speaker 02

  I don't know, 2009? 2009, so I would be-

• 1:02:49Mark Normand?

Jesus, you got in the business early.

• 1:02:52Speaker 02

Yeah, I mean, well, I'm 43. Am I older than you guys?

• 1:02:55Sam Morril?

  You look young, yeah.

• 1:02:56Mark Normand?

  I'm 41.

• 1:02:56Speaker 02

Thanks, guys. I'm doing press, so it made me look pretty. Um, but, uh, 2009 would be 28?

• 1:03:04Sam Morril?

  Yeah, alright.

• 1:03:05Speaker 02

  Is that right?

• 1:03:05Mark Normand?

That's pretty good to be at this level, writing-

• 1:03:08Speaker 02

  This was crazy.

• 1:03:09Mark Normand?

  On this, the 81st Oscars?

• 1:03:11Speaker 02

I moved to LA and I got a job to write for his part of the Oscars. And then I, I got very lucky when I moved to LA, like, a lot of things fell into place. I was in New York, I didn't want to leave New York. My family's here, I'm very close to my family. And I waited till literally the last second.

• 1:03:24Mark Normand?

  Hmm.

• 1:03:25Speaker 02

And then I left New York and I came with like-

• 1:03:27Sam Morril?

Were you happy you ended up leaving?

• 1:03:28Speaker 02

Yeah, it changed my whole life, yeah, yeah.

• 1:03:30Sam Morril?

  You live in LA now?

• 1:03:32Speaker 02

Yes, but also, like, I wasn't doing stand-up. So the options for me in terms of movement, like, I wasn't gonna be a writer on SNL, it didn't look like. I wasn't gonna be writing for Letterman at the time.

• 1:03:42Sam Morril?

Did you want to be on SNL at the time?

• 1:03:43Speaker 02

Oh my god, everybody who does sketch improv is in my head.

• 1:03:45Mark Normand?

How did you not get on SNL?

• 1:03:47Speaker 02

I didn't even get an audition.

• 1:03:47Mark Normand?

  A shoe-in?

• 1:03:48Speaker 02

I don't know if I'd be good, because they do, like, characters and impressions. I don't know if I can do any impressions.

• 1:03:52Mark Normand?

  Ah, okay, okay.

• 1:03:53Speaker 02

So it's like, I don't know, like, how, I mean, but writing, I didn't even get to really, like, give it a shot.

• 1:03:57Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:03:58Speaker 02

So I was like, okay, if I want to act, uh, I can go out there. And there's an Upright Citizens Brigade out there, so I can improvise. And people who actually make decisions on TV shows can see me improvise. And then I had a lot of short films.

• 1:04:08Mark Normand?

  Hmm.

• 1:04:09Speaker 02

And that was the way I was gonna show people, like-

• 1:04:10Mark Normand?

  Ah.

• 1:04:11Speaker 02

So we used to, like, I got a job writing for Robot Chicken, that was my first writing job.

• 1:04:14Mark Normand?

Hey, we just met Seth Green the other night.

• 1:04:16Speaker 02

I heard that he was at the roast.

• 1:04:18Sam Morril?

He was in the front row.

• 1:04:18Speaker 02

  With Brecken, Brecken's the best.

• 1:04:19Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:20Speaker 02

Uh, but, so like, that's how I started. I started very much as a writer that did improv. And slowly got into commercials and slowly got into all the other acting stuff.

• 1:04:27Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 1:04:27Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:04:28Mark Normand?

Man, what a career, because your resume is bananas, pull it up.

• 1:04:31Sam Morril?

You've been in so much stuff, I mean, yeah, I mean- What do you get recognized from the most, is it Parks and Rec?

• 1:04:36Speaker 02

  Yeah, still Parks and Rec.

• 1:04:37Mark Normand?

  Oh, sure.

• 1:04:38Speaker 02

Parks and Rec is number one, I think, and now, and now, um-

• 1:04:41Mark Normand?

  Baby Shark's big show.

• 1:04:43Speaker 02

  Blizzard Wizard, now it's, um-

• 1:04:45Mark Normand?

  That's big money right there.

• 1:04:46Speaker 02

Sonic is a big one, too.

• 1:04:48Mark Normand?

  Of course.

• 1:04:48Speaker 02

I got to do a scene with Animal in The Muppets.

• 1:04:50Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 1:04:51Speaker 02

Which, by the way, is so funny, I bet you guys would be the same way, is that we just started going, and you just know, I just know the rhythm, how to make Animal funny, because I've watched The Muppets my whole life.

• 1:05:00Mark Normand?

  Sure.

• 1:05:00Speaker 02

So I know exactly what to do to set him up.

• 1:05:02Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:02Speaker 02

So, so easy. So it's like, I know the cadence to make a Muppet funny, because I know The Muppets so well, as a kid.

• 1:05:08Mark Normand?

Man, so many kids, you learn a lot of kid stuff.

• 1:05:11Speaker 02

There's a lot of voiceover. I love voiceover.

• 1:05:12Mark Normand?

Wow, boy, if you can get into voiceover, you are set for life, baby.

• 1:05:15Speaker 02

It's, it doesn't pay very well.

• 1:05:17Mark Normand?

  Oh, it doesn't?

• 1:05:18Speaker 02

Yeah. Voiceover does not pay very well.

• 1:05:20Mark Normand?

I just thought, I just guess I go off the Simpsons guys. Those guys are billionaires.

• 1:05:23Speaker 02

Oh, my god, no. I mean, usually, all these jobs that you're looking at are probably SAG scale.

• 1:05:28Mark Normand?

  What?

• 1:05:29Sam Morril?

I took a Lotto ticket to be Hank Azay.

• 1:05:31Speaker 02

Oh, my god. And it doesn't exist anymore, because now there's not even residuals.

• 1:05:34Mark Normand?

  Exactly.

• 1:05:35Speaker 02

So it's like, even, like, in the beginning, when I did DuckTales, we got a bunch of residuals, because they played over and over again at Disney, but now they give it to Disney Plus, and you don't really get residuals.

• 1:05:43Mark Normand?

God, they fuck you every way. And then that writer's strike, I think, had like, an opposite effect.

• 1:05:49Sam Morril?

  I know.

• 1:05:50Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:05:50Mark Normand?

Modern Family, wow, that show was underrated, I feel like.

• 1:05:53Speaker 02

This is very weird to look at this.

• 1:05:55Mark Normand?

  Sorry.

• 1:05:55Sam Morril?

  You've got a long...

• 1:05:56Speaker 02

Blue Iguana was with Sam Rockwell, and I just sold a movie with him. That's gonna be fun.

• 1:05:59Mark Normand?

  Whoa, he's a beast.

• 1:06:00Speaker 02

  Dude, he's the best.

• 1:06:01Mark Normand?

  Great actor.

• 1:06:02Speaker 02

He's the fucking best. And I wrote a really fun movie for us that Yorma's gonna direct.

• 1:06:08Sam Morril?

You wrote the movie, Yorma the, what's his name?

• 1:06:10Speaker 02

  Yorma from Lonely Island.

• 1:06:12Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:06:13Speaker 02

  He's gonna direct it.

• 1:06:14Sam Morril?

And so you, it's a, what kind of comedy is it?

• 1:06:17Speaker 02

  They haven't announced it yet.

• 1:06:18Mark Normand?

  Or...

• 1:06:18Speaker 02

They haven't announced what it is yet. Oh, yeah, I did the voice of BB-8 for Force Awakens.

• 1:06:23Mark Normand?

  Wow, BB-8?

• 1:06:24Speaker 02

My man. And then I think they, I think JJ just found a fucking app on his iPad, and that was what he used.

• 1:06:30Mark Normand?

  Oh, wow.

• 1:06:31Speaker 02

It was me, I did lines as BB-8, and then they transformed them into beeps and boops, and then, um...

• 1:06:36Mark Normand?

And you made it on The Simpsons, your dream.

• 1:06:39Speaker 02

That was it. I had three goals when I first started.

• 1:06:40Mark Normand?

  Let's hear it.

• 1:06:41Speaker 02

One was to be, because I was a page at Letterman, showing people the bathroom was, so one was to be a guest on Letterman. I did it two weeks before he stopped.

• 1:06:48Mark Normand?

  Okay.

• 1:06:49Speaker 02

Simpsons, to be voice of the Simpsons, and the third one was to host SNL, which I have not.

• 1:06:51Sam Morril?

  Wow.

• 1:06:52Mark Normand?

  That's coming, baby. Sonic 6.

• 1:06:55Sam Morril?

I did a Letterman thing, but it was on Netflix, like one of those like sit down things and it was.

• 1:06:58Speaker 02

Wait, you did his interview show?

• 1:07:00Sam Morril?

  Yeah, it was, uh.

• 1:07:01Speaker 02

  That's enormous.

• 1:07:02Mark Normand?

Pull it up. It was stand up.

• 1:07:03Sam Morril?

It wasn't like, yeah, it wasn't like the one that.

• 1:07:06Mark Normand?

  Kardashian.

• 1:07:07Sam Morril?

He did one for stand up. So you do a stand up segment and then you'd, you'd sit down and talk with him and it was like.

• 1:07:12Speaker 02

That's, I know exactly what you're talking about. That's enormous.

• 1:07:14Sam Morril?

There it is. It was good.

• 1:07:15Mark Normand?

  That was a great moment.

• 1:07:16Speaker 02

This is, do you realize how insane this is?

• 1:07:18Sam Morril?

It was insane. I mean, that was one of my lines. I was like, you went to, uh, he goes, well, you know, when do you think you'll make, you'll know when you made it? I'm like, I'm talking to you, dude.

• 1:07:26Speaker 02

  I agree.

• 1:07:27Sam Morril?

And I said, I'm like, I'm like, where were you gonna be in a couple of years? I said, you went from Obama to me. Are you gonna be talking to a crackhead?

• 1:07:32Speaker 02

  Oh, I love that.

• 1:07:33Sam Morril?

And, and he was like, if I'm talking to anyone, you know, but no, yeah.

• 1:07:36Speaker 02

Do you know what this means though, by the way? This means that he had to have seen you do comedy.

• 1:07:39Sam Morril?

  He was very cool.

• 1:07:40Speaker 02

And think you're funny enough, cause he would not have you on the show unless he personally thought you were funny.

• 1:07:43Sam Morril?

He was so, I did a thing during COVID where I just filmed a special on rooftops in New York.

• 1:07:48Speaker 02

  Oh, that's great.

• 1:07:49Sam Morril?

  So he was like.

• 1:07:50Speaker 02

  What's that called?

• 1:07:51Sam Morril?

It's called Up on the Roof.

• 1:07:52Speaker 02

  Great.

• 1:07:52Sam Morril?

  But he, uh.

• 1:07:53Speaker 02

  Dude, this is crazy.

• 1:07:55Sam Morril?

He was crazy. He was crazy cool and, uh, he, it's funny talking to a guy from that era because he doesn't understand how we have to make comedy now. Cause he came up in the, you know, seventies, eighties when you, you just wanted to get on TV, but he goes for stand up. We didn't, we wanted a sitcom. And I was like, yeah, but they don't really do that often. It's impossible.

• 1:08:13Speaker 02

It's not real. That's not real anymore.

• 1:08:14Sam Morril?

Cause he didn't understand why I put a special out for free. I was like, well, cause we make the bulk of our money touring.

• 1:08:19Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:08:19Sam Morril?

He didn't, so he was, I think, just, he's, you see why he's the best interviewer, cause he's so curious.

• 1:08:24Speaker 02

He was, he is the best. I was a page at that place. I watched him do it. You know, I watched him my whole life. My parents would be, uh, lying down their bed like this. I'm like perpendicular to them, you know, they're, and we would all watch Letterman every single night.

• 1:08:38Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 1:08:38Speaker 02

It was like such a big deal in our house. And then when I was a page there and I like hustled my way to get that job. We didn't know anybody. So it's like, I, I got so lucky in getting that job. Um, and when I was a page, I saw him every night. And then when I started freelancing for the monologue, I would, whenever he ended all of his monologues, he would point to Paul Schaffer and say, ladies and gentlemen, Paul Schaffer and the CBS Orchestra. And that's how you know no more jokes are gonna be said. And so me as a page, I'm there helping people with the audience.

• 1:09:03Mark Normand?

  How cute.

• 1:09:04Speaker 02

Oh yeah. I just posted yesterday, cause I did Colbert yesterday. Um.

• 1:09:06Mark Normand?

  Oh, cool.

• 1:09:07Speaker 02

That's me as a page on the bottom. So 20 years ago, that's me 20 years ago.

• 1:09:11Mark Normand?

  That's amazing.

• 1:09:12Speaker 02

And so then, anytime you'd point, you know, it's over, I know I didn't get a joke on. So I started to say like, "Fuck!", and you could hear it in the show. And I started to get yelled at by the audience person, being like, "Ben, you can't be on the floor anymore, because you're cursing when you don't get your jokes on." And I was like, "I'm so sorry, I had no idea you could hear that."

• 1:09:30Sam Morril?

  That's amazing.

• 1:09:30Mark Normand?

Man, you could host, you look right in that desk on the top.

• 1:09:33Speaker 02

I love Colbert, he's so smart, dude.

• 1:09:35Mark Normand?

  He's a very talented guy.

• 1:09:36Speaker 02

  I love Colbert.

• 1:09:37Sam Morril?

I was in college, I was an intern at his show, The Colbert Report.

• 1:09:40Speaker 02

  Oh my god.

• 1:09:41Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:42Speaker 02

  That's huge.

• 1:09:42Sam Morril?

That was a pretty epic experience, and you know.

• 1:09:44Speaker 02

What does an intern do for The Colbert Report?

• 1:09:46Sam Morril?

Any run they need, any like.

• 1:09:48Speaker 02

I bet people were nice there though, no?

• 1:09:50Sam Morril?

Yeah, he was great, and he was incredible. I was there when he threw water in Richard Branson's face.

• 1:09:54Mark Normand?

  Pull it up!

• 1:09:55Sam Morril?

Richard Branson pulled, and you could hear me saying, "Fuck, no." Uh, but you could see, Richard Branson got mad during the interview, so he just takes water and throws it in his face. And Colbert, uh, he got water back. He waved over for his producer to bring water, and he threw it back in his face, and like, I was like, "This ain't a bit."

• 1:10:12Mark Normand?

Whoa. Branson didn't know he was joking, I guess?

• 1:10:17Sam Morril?

No, I think he would fuck with people on that show. I mean, that was kind of was incredible.

• 1:10:21Speaker 02

  He was playing a character?

• 1:10:22Sam Morril?

Yeah, I mean, he was kind of.

• 1:10:23Speaker 02

Oh, I can't wait to see this.

• 1:10:25Sam Morril?

He was kind of messing with, I mean, it might not be online.

• 1:10:27Mark Normand?

  Whoa, scrubbed.

• 1:10:28Sam Morril?

  But he was.

• 1:10:30Speaker 02

Oh, I guess he came on a late.

• 1:10:31Sam Morril?

No, it's not on his late night show, it's on Colbert Report.

• 1:10:34Mark Normand?

At least he came back, they rekindled.

• 1:10:36Speaker 02

  There you go.

• 1:10:36Sam Morril?

But it was a tense moment where I was like, "That is bad."

• 1:10:40Mark Normand?

  Damn.

• 1:10:41Speaker 02

  Did it air, you think?

• 1:10:43Sam Morril?

It aired. Yeah, I mean, you can't not air that.

• 1:10:45Mark Normand?

Right. Takes off his pants, yeah, I think they scrubbed it.

• 1:10:49Sam Morril?

  They scrubbed it.

• 1:10:50Mark Normand?

  What the fuck?

• 1:10:50Sam Morril?

  It was weird.

• 1:10:51Mark Normand?

  That's a good moment.

• 1:10:52Sam Morril?

So, was he a dude, were you watching like Stranger with Candy and Colbert Report?

• 1:10:56Speaker 02

Love Stranger with Candy, love Colbert Report, but, um, I think him on late, late show is pretty fucking awesome.

• 1:11:05Speaker 02

God, Richard Branson's throwing water in everybody's face.

• 1:11:07Mark Normand?

  Ah, that's his thing.

• 1:11:08Sam Morril?

Is he your late night host? Is he your fave?

• 1:11:11Speaker 02

  Right now?

• 1:11:11Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:12Speaker 02

I love him. I like, I, I've been, I, I've been lucky enough to do all of them. I did Corden's show seventeen times.

• 1:11:19Mark Normand?

  Seventeen?

• 1:11:20Speaker 02

I was like, I did it more than anybody else.

• 1:11:22Mark Normand?

  Gee, who canceled?

• 1:11:24Speaker 02

Crazy. By the way, that's literally, by the way, my goal as someone who's a page on Letterman, when they needed someone, he would have his people.

• 1:11:30Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 1:11:30Speaker 02

I was, I always wanted to be that person. And they weren't even the most famous people. Sometimes they were, but sometimes they weren't. And for-

• 1:11:36Sam Morril?

Who was Letterman's people for that?

• 1:11:38Speaker 02

There was a, there was a stand-up that came over every Christmas. I forget. And he took a football and he hits like a meatball off the top of the Christmas tree. I forget who the people were, but he had his people, like he, Bill Murray, anytime he came on was, was amazing. Howard Stern would come on and be incredible and he would come on a bunch of times a year. Um, Tom Hanks was amazing on that show. But I always wanted to be like the, whatever. And then for Corden, I slowly became a thing when people dropped and I lived in LA. They're like, hey, can you come here today and whatever? I'm like, great.

• 1:12:05Sam Morril?

And were you ever on with someone where it just didn't vibe at all? Cause they did the two guests, right?

• 1:12:09Speaker 02

Yeah, they do sometimes more than two guests. It never really, I've, I've been on with so many people that they kind of, uh, used me as someone that could, let's say they have guests and like they need someone to like be a little bit funny or, you know, liven it up. I think that I've kind of helped with that.

• 1:12:24Mark Normand?

  Comedic relief.

• 1:12:25Speaker 02

I think a little bit, or like to make people feel comfortable, whatever.

• 1:12:27Mark Normand?

Now, we did Corden, I think, once each.

• 1:12:29Sam Morril?

  I did it twice.

• 1:12:30Mark Normand?

  Twice.

• 1:12:30Sam Morril?

  I was, I did stand-up. I wasn't a guest and-

• 1:12:33Speaker 02

  That's gotta be terrifying.

• 1:12:34Mark Normand?

  No, that crowd was juiced.

• 1:12:35Sam Morril?

They were the most juiced and-

• 1:12:36Speaker 02

Because that lives on forever. Like, and you're, but can you use those on a special after or no?

• 1:12:40Mark Normand?

  Yeah, you probably could.

• 1:12:41Sam Morril?

You could use them if you want. I don't think I used all of them, but like-

• 1:12:43Mark Normand?

  I didn't either.

• 1:12:44Sam Morril?

But I used some of them and, uh, you know, he was one of the coolest in that he would be like, this is not normal what this is, but not everyone does this.

• 1:12:51Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:52Sam Morril?

It's not normal what's about to happen. This guy's doing stand-up at 5:00 PM-

• 1:12:56Speaker 02

  Yeah, dude.

• 1:12:56Sam Morril?

For a studio crowd, give him everything and like, dude, not everyone does that.

• 1:13:00Mark Normand?

That goes a long way for a young comic.

• 1:13:02Sam Morril?

I love Conan. I'm a huge Conan guy, but he would just be like, your next guest.

• 1:13:05Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:06Sam Morril?

  Dude, come on.

• 1:13:06Speaker 02

Wait, so who, is there some-

• 1:13:08Mark Normand?

  Fallon does it too.

• 1:13:09Speaker 02

Is there some show that you always wanted to get on that like, uh-

• 1:13:13Mark Normand?

  Conan.

• 1:13:13Sam Morril?

Conan was the one. We did that a few times.

• 1:13:16Speaker 02

Yeah, because Conan had the coolest, the music guests and the coolest standups.

• 1:13:19Mark Normand?

And he seemed fun. He wasn't, he didn't, like Letterman, to me, was cool, but he was like this older statesman, where Conan felt like a guy I would hang out with.

• 1:13:27Sam Morril?

He was kind of my, my brother loved Conan so much that it was like, that kind of became our guy.

• 1:13:32Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:13:33Sam Morril?

But I love Letterman. Yeah, I mean, he's amazing.

• 1:13:35Mark Normand?

I gotta ask, though, you did seventeen cordons. That's what I was getting to.

• 1:13:38Speaker 02

  Let's see how many, thirteen?

• 1:13:39Sam Morril?

  Did you do Ferguson?

• 1:13:40Speaker 02

  Five times, I bet.

• 1:13:41Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 1:13:42Speaker 02

I've done every, I did Leno. I've done every, I've been a guest on every talk show host that was.

• 1:13:48Mark Normand?

  Dick Cavett?

• 1:13:49Speaker 02

He was gone. God, I wish. Yeah, me, I went on Tom Snyder for three hours.

• 1:13:53Mark Normand?

  Steve Allen?

• 1:13:54Speaker 02

Yeah, me and Steve Allen really go back. Um.

• 1:13:57Sam Morril?

I kind of miss, I feel like.

• 1:13:58Speaker 02

But I love late night. Like, I love late night.

• 1:14:00Sam Morril?

I love the crowd. I love the, uh.

• 1:14:02Speaker 02

  I love everything.

• 1:14:03Mark Normand?

  Showbiz of it all.

• 1:14:04Sam Morril?

  I, that's not normal anymore, I feel.

• 1:14:06Mark Normand?

  No.

• 1:14:07Sam Morril?

Podcasting's great, but I miss, I turn it on so much harder when there's a crowd there, and I miss, I do miss that. Like, even doing a live podcast, when there's a crowd.

• 1:14:15Speaker 02

Oh, I bet it crushes. I bet you guys go crazy.

• 1:14:17Sam Morril?

  We, we're.

• 1:14:18Speaker 02

You guys are drawn to crowds. That's what you know.

• 1:14:20Sam Morril?

  It's better.

• 1:14:21Mark Normand?

You want the laugh. You want the big laugh in the room.

• 1:14:22Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I did once with Julia Roberts, which is really cool. Every now and then you're like, sitting next to someone.

• 1:14:28Mark Normand?

  That's bananas.

• 1:14:29Speaker 02

Thirteen, thirteen episodes. I liked it.

• 1:14:30Sam Morril?

  That's amazing, though. What, uh.

• 1:14:32Mark Normand?

  TV.

• 1:14:32Sam Morril?

Yeah, it was, how was Julia Roberts?

• 1:14:34Mark Normand?

  That's thirteen thousand dollars.

• 1:14:35Speaker 02

Amazing. You know, they take a picture of you, like, before you go on, and you, like, they take a picture of you, and she, like, snuck into my picture, and I kept it, I have it in my frickin', you know, like, I have, like, a wall of, like, all these things. No, I don't, I never showed anybody that, I don't think.

• 1:14:48Mark Normand?

Well, it's funny, we were just talking about this the other day. If, if we photobomb a photo, people will stab us. But if, if Julia Roberts does, it's like a, it's like a huge win.

• 1:14:55Speaker 02

I literally have kept it my whole life in the same place.

• 1:14:57Sam Morril?

You have to be famous to pull that move.

• 1:14:58Speaker 02

It was so cool. I can't believe I have it.

• 1:15:01Mark Normand?

Damn. How's she looking in person?

• 1:15:03Speaker 02

  Gorgeous.

• 1:15:04Mark Normand?

  I bet.

• 1:15:04Speaker 02

  Incredible.

• 1:15:05Mark Normand?

  Hubba hubba.

• 1:15:05Speaker 02

  She's amazing. Hotchimachy.

• 1:15:07Sam Morril?

  Hot.

• 1:15:09Sam Morril?

Is there anyone that you've wanted to meet that you haven't met yet?

• 1:15:13Speaker 02

Oh, like directors. I want to work with a lot of directors.

• 1:15:15Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:16Speaker 02

I'd love to work with Steven Spielberg.

• 1:15:17Mark Normand?

  Oh.

• 1:15:18Sam Morril?

We were just talking about how he's, what did we say? He was like maybe top three ever?

• 1:15:21Speaker 02

  I gotta be.

• 1:15:22Mark Normand?

  Easily.

• 1:15:23Speaker 02

It's gotta be. I did a movie with Zemeckis, who did Back to

• 1:15:25Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 1:15:25Speaker 02

Back to Future is my favorite movie of all time.

• 1:15:27Mark Normand?

  Come on!

• 1:15:28Speaker 02

Yeah. What are your favorite movies?

• 1:15:30Mark Normand?

  The Power of Love.

• 1:15:31Speaker 02

Never heard of it. Is that from the movie?

• 1:15:32Mark Normand?

  Yeah, it's Huey Lewis.

• 1:15:33Speaker 02

Oh, okay. And the news or just him?

• 1:15:36Mark Normand?

I think the news as well.

• 1:15:37Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:15:37Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:38Speaker 02

  What are your favorite movies?

• 1:15:39Mark Normand?

Well, we gotta wrap this up, but yeah, give, throw something out there. Two Girls

• 1:15:42Sam Morril?

I'm fucking annoying. I love film noir so much that like I'll throw like 1940s movies.

• 1:15:47Speaker 02

  Oh, my God.

• 1:15:48Sam Morril?

So like Out of the Past.

• 1:15:49Speaker 02

You're begging to go on Letterboxd.

• 1:15:52Sam Morril?

Well, I love, I love, those are like my two, Double Indemnity and Out of the Past.

• 1:15:56Speaker 02

  Oh, Double Indemnity is amazing.

• 1:15:57Sam Morril?

It's just the most perfect script ever.

• 1:15:58Speaker 02

  It's an incredible film.

• 1:15:59Sam Morril?

But then like guilty pla, like Back to School makes me laugh.

• 1:16:02Mark Normand?

  Ah, sure.

• 1:16:03Sam Morril?

  Rodney Dangerfield is a great.

• 1:16:04Speaker 02

  Of course.

• 1:16:05Sam Morril?

I love, uh, fuck, man, there's so many. If Fargo's on TV, I'm always watching.

• 1:16:10Mark Normand?

Great movie. Yeah, it's another, like, any Coen is pretty great.

• 1:16:12Sam Morril?

  What are you saying?

• 1:16:13Mark Normand?

Well, I like, uh, Cool Hand Luke. I just love that movie. I love Groundhog Day.

• 1:16:18Speaker 02

  Oh, that's a perfect comedy.

• 1:16:19Mark Normand?

  Deep, you know, there's something

• 1:16:20Sam Morril?

  Dumb and Dumber is all

• 1:16:22Speaker 02

Dumb and Dumber is a top five movie of all time for me.

• 1:16:23Sam Morril?

  It's perfect.

• 1:16:24Speaker 02

I think it's a top five movie of all time.

• 1:16:26Mark Normand?

  It's great.

• 1:16:28Sam Morril?

  Yeah, there's so many.

• 1:16:29Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:16:29Sam Morril?

Any, any like badass throwback, if a Michael Mann movie's on TV too, it's like

• 1:16:33Mark Normand?

  Oh, I know.

• 1:16:34Sam Morril?

  It's impossible not

• 1:16:35Speaker 02

I find myself watching older movies now. I don't know if it's to connect with me being a kid, but like I love watching older movies now more than I love watching newer.

• 1:16:42Sam Morril?

  Give us a couple more.

• 1:16:44Speaker 02

Stuff that I love. My top five is probably, I mean, listen.

• 1:16:47Mark Normand?

  Ferris Bueller's up there too.

• 1:16:48Speaker 02

Ferris Bueller is amazing. Oh, yeah, I'm going on tour again. Um, uh, Back to Future, probably Dumb and Dumber, Shawshank. I'd put an animated movie in there, so probably Aladdin.

• 1:16:58Mark Normand?

  Oh, great movie.

• 1:16:59Speaker 02

  Yeah, great movie.

• 1:17:00Mark Normand?

Robin Williams is amazing in that.

• 1:17:01Speaker 02

And then, and then like there's a hundred other ones, like Jurassic Park is probably there.

• 1:17:05Mark Normand?

  Hell, yeah.

• 1:17:06Speaker 02

There's some, Big is probably up there.

• 1:17:07Mark Normand?

  Big.

• 1:17:08Speaker 02

  There's so many good.

• 1:17:09Mark Normand?

Give me, give me Gogo Bup.

• 1:17:10Speaker 02

Sonic is out right now. I don't know when this comes out, but it's literally out this moment. I just went to the first screening that the public could see. We just surprised people. It was great. It's great. I'm so happy with it.

• 1:17:21Mark Normand?

And it's in theaters, which is nice. I love a theater movie. Let's keep the theaters alive.

• 1:17:25Speaker 02

It is in theaters. The hope is that if enough people see it, we keep getting to make them. But this is like, imagine for like two years you waiting for this movie or a year. And it's fun. Today is the day it was out. And we went to the first screening that fans went to today at 3pm, right before we came here. And we got like surprised. It was awesome.

• 1:17:40Mark Normand?

I saw Ghostbusters, the new one with Paul Rudd.

• 1:17:44Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:17:45Mark Normand?

With Ronnie Chang in Lincoln Center. It was so fun.

• 1:17:48Speaker 02

  So cool.

• 1:17:49Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:50Speaker 02

  So cool.

• 1:17:50Mark Normand?

Day of the, what is it? The release day?

• 1:17:52Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah. The premiere.

• 1:17:53Mark Normand?

Red carpet. Premiere, that's the word.

• 1:17:55Sam Morril?

It's so fun to still go to the theater, man. So yeah, support this movie so they can keep making more. Check it out.

• 1:18:01Speaker 02

  Oh yeah, my tour.

• 1:18:01Sam Morril?

That's a people. When people say support, go see the movie. Enjoy it.

• 1:18:04Mark Normand?

  Enjoy the movie.

• 1:18:05Sam Morril?

He's not fucking homeless. He's crushing.

• 1:18:07Speaker 02

Enjoy the movie. Have a great time. And then my tour starts in January in Milwaukee.

• 1:18:12Mark Normand?

  Alone?

• 1:18:13Speaker 02

It's Ben Schwartz and Friends, so it's me doing improv.

• 1:18:15Mark Normand?

  Got it.

• 1:18:16Speaker 02

So we'll do improv, but we're playing, we're playing more casinos than we've ever played.

• 1:18:20Mark Normand?

  Whoa, a casino?

• 1:18:21Speaker 02

A bunch of them. We did a couple. Now we're like, I guess we'll just do a couple more. But we're playing the Beacon again for New Yorkers in April.

• 1:18:28Mark Normand?

  Hell yeah.

• 1:18:28Speaker 02

And then we're going, I'm doing Sydney Opera House in May.

• 1:18:31Mark Normand?

  Nice.

• 1:18:32Sam Morril?

  Oh, that's legendary.

• 1:18:33Mark Normand?

  That's a beauty.

• 1:18:33Speaker 02

Yeah. There's like all these venues that I always want to play and that's the...

• 1:18:36Sam Morril?

It's one of the most beautiful, I mean, just on the water.

• 1:18:39Speaker 02

I know. It's crazy. And also, you guys know, when we, like, I played Royal Albert Hall this year. You won't get, you won't get paid a ton of money to do these venues because it's so expensive.

• 1:18:49Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 1:18:49Speaker 02

Radio City Music Hall, 6,000 people. You don't get paid as, like, it's, you don't get paid more.

• 1:18:54Mark Normand?

  No.

• 1:18:54Speaker 02

  It's like...

• 1:18:55Sam Morril?

But there's really no one you can complain to about it.

• 1:18:57Speaker 02

And also, it's like, I don't even care.

• 1:18:58Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:18:58Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 1:18:59Speaker 02

I just want to say that I played, I want to be in that theater. I want to say that I was on the same stage as Blank.

• 1:19:04Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:19:04Speaker 02

And it doesn't even matter. Like, we have our other shows that we can make a little bit of money, but there are some that you're like, man, so Sydney Opera House is one of those and Royal Albert Hall. Radio City was one of those.

• 1:19:11Mark Normand?

If you do two, you make some money.

• 1:19:13Speaker 02

Yeah, I bet that's how it works.

• 1:19:14Sam Morril?

Oh, you're going all over. Yeah, you gotta go.

• 1:19:16Mark Normand?

  Oh, vets is a great...

• 1:19:17Speaker 02

We sold out Sydney Opera House, so we did a state theater show right before it.

• 1:19:20Mark Normand?

  Hell yeah. Yeah, wow.

• 1:19:21Speaker 02

And then we're gonna go to Melbourne, but this is great. You guys ever been to Paramount Theater in Seattle?

• 1:19:25Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 1:19:25Speaker 02

One of my favorite venues to perform comedy.

• 1:19:27Mark Normand?

  It's nice.

• 1:19:28Speaker 02

And Prince used to play there, or Prince has played there.

• 1:19:30Mark Normand?

  I didn't know that.

• 1:19:31Speaker 02

I like sometimes like looking through and seeing like what other people have played.

• 1:19:35Mark Normand?

This is exciting. Alright, well go, what's the website called?

• 1:19:37Speaker 02

It's rejectedjokes.com because when I started to freelance jokes for Letterman, I used to take all the ones that he rejected and I would perform them to zero people. And then I put those videos on the internet and that's how I started.

• 1:19:47Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 1:19:48Sam Morril?

  That's smart.

• 1:19:49Mark Normand?

  Crazy.

• 1:19:49Sam Morril?

And because there's a low bar already, so.

• 1:19:51Speaker 02

They, and nobody's in the audience, so they all bomb. And then I just release them, and that's like how I.

• 1:19:56Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 1:19:57Speaker 02

I haven't updated this in a long time. Anyway, that's right, you don't have to look at any of this anymore.

• 1:20:00Mark Normand?

Check it out, rejectedjokes.com, folks, for the tour dates.

• 1:20:03Sam Morril?

Go see Ben on tour, check out Sonic 3.

• 1:20:06Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 1:20:07Sam Morril?

And, uh, yeah, thanks for joining us.

• 1:20:08Speaker 02

  Thanks, guys, have fun.

• 1:20:09Sam Morril?

Bring Bodega Cat Whiskey, by the way.

• 1:20:11Speaker 02

  Is that yours?

• 1:20:12Sam Morril?

  That's ours.

• 1:20:12Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:20:12Sam Morril?

  Bodega Cat Whiskey.com.

• 1:20:14Speaker 02

  You have your own whiskey?

• 1:20:15Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:20:15Sam Morril?

  They'll give you a bottle.

• 1:20:16Speaker 02

How does that happen? Do you like go to where they make it?

• 1:20:18Mark Normand?

  It's a long story.

• 1:20:19Sam Morril?

  It's a long process.

• 1:20:20Mark Normand?

We make it in a bathtub and then we ship it out.

• 1:20:23Speaker 02

God, how exciting. I can't believe you guys make the labels for this and everything.

• 1:20:27Mark Normand?

Uh, well, we had a lot of help. We don't know what the hell we're doing, but we're getting there. We're in all these comedy clubs now and, uh, it's online.

• 1:20:33Sam Morril?

  It's building, for sure.

• 1:20:33Speaker 02

  How cool is that?

• 1:20:34Sam Morril?

  Very cool.

• 1:20:35Speaker 02

Are you happy you're doing it?

• 1:20:36Mark Normand?

Yeah, we're trying to retire on this beauty.

• 1:20:40Mark Normand?

  Where are you gonna be?

• 1:20:41Sam Morril?

Uh, we'll do, we'll let him leave.

• 1:20:42Mark Normand?

  Oh, okay.

• 1:20:43Speaker 02

I'll hear it, where are you gonna be?

• 1:20:45Mark Normand?

  I'll hear it.

• 1:20:45Sam Morril?

Alright, get it up. What do you got? What, oh, I got San Antonio, uh, January 3rd and 4th. I'm doing clubs to warm up for this tour. San Antonio, 3rd and 4th. I got, uh, Liberty Township, Ohio, the following weekend. Pittsburgh Improv, the 23rd through 25th, and then it's just all theaters. Charlotte, Richmond.

• 1:21:04Speaker 02

  Philly's so fun to play.

• 1:21:05Sam Morril?

  Bethlehem.

• 1:21:06Speaker 02

Austin is, ooh dude, that Paramount Theater's really fun, too.

• 1:21:09Sam Morril?

Tulsa, Austin, Dallas, Houston, New Orleans, Memphis. Memphis, we're moving slowly, guys, come the fuck out. Knoxville.

• 1:21:16Speaker 02

Atlanta, great one. I played the Tabernacle before.

• 1:21:18Sam Morril?

  Birmingham.

• 1:21:19Speaker 02

  Durham's such a fun city.

• 1:21:20Sam Morril?

  Durham, New Haven, Pro.

• 1:21:22Speaker 02

Hey, we're playing the same one. I'm playing that Vets, too, in Providence.

• 1:21:25Mark Normand?

  It's a good room.

• 1:21:26Sam Morril?

Oh, I'm pumped. Yeah, I heard it's great. Portsmouth, we added one there, so come check it out. Portland. Berlin, Burlington.

• 1:21:31Speaker 02

Oh, you like food? Are you a food person?

• 1:21:32Sam Morril?

  Fuck yeah.

I'll give you recs for a bunch of these cities.

• 1:21:35Sam Morril?

  Please.

• 1:21:35Speaker 02

  Hell yeah.

• 1:21:36Sam Morril?

Montreal, Buffalo, and that's, and there are more and more, but that's Albany. Punchup.live slash Samorell, or just Samorell.com, all these, so many. I'm moving to the west coast too, so you'll see if you don't-

• 1:21:47Speaker 02

  Are you touring now too?

• 1:21:48Sam Morril?

  I can hear your city.

• 1:21:49Mark Normand?

Yeah, my wife's eight months pregnant.

• 1:21:50Speaker 02

  Oh!

• 1:21:51Mark Normand?

  Taking a break after January.

• 1:21:53Speaker 02

  Congrats!

• 1:21:54Mark Normand?

  Thank you, sir.

• 1:21:55Speaker 02

  How cool.

• 1:21:55Mark Normand?

  Not mine. Houston, Texas.

• 1:21:58Speaker 02

  Alright.

• 1:21:58Mark Normand?

Phoenix, Dallas, and then I'm gonna take a break, and then we're back in Nashville at the Ryman, and then-

• 1:22:05Speaker 02

  Dude, that venue's the best.

• 1:22:06Mark Normand?

I'm excited. And then Asheville, doing a makeup day because of that cunt Helane ruined the city, so I'll be back in April.

• 1:22:14Speaker 02

Look how sold out you are. Go up. Look how exciting this is.

• 1:22:16Mark Normand?

  Does it say sold out?

• 1:22:17Speaker 02

All of them. So many things sold out. So you don't have to think about this at all.

• 1:22:20Mark Normand?

No, we pump out the jokes, so come on by.

• 1:22:24Speaker 02

  We pump out the joke.

• 1:22:25Mark Normand?

I don't know when this comes out. Oh shit, alright. Well, yeah, happy new year, happy holidays, happy Hanukkah.

• 1:22:31Speaker 02

  Happy Hanukkah, everybody.

• 1:22:32Sam Morril?

Swanza, do it up. Have a great, we'll see you before the new year, but thanks for listening, guys. Support, uh, support, I'm gonna say it again, I'm an idiot. Uh, go see Ben's movie, and, uh, go see him on the road.

• 1:22:43Speaker 02

  Thanks, guys.

• 1:22:43Mark Normand?

  Comedy.

• 1:22:44Speaker 07

Sunday's the day for my next offender. A bit of Pivac, you know the future's close. I've had a little too much bourbon and Norman's talking shit about the fucking Pope. And I get down in the same way. Up on the roof like a cop's coming and naked Samuel is feeling dangerous. I'm out to lunch here in New Orleans. This woman doesn't look like I remember her. And I get down in the same way. We might be true.
