• 2:39Jason Bateman?

  So, hi, everybody. Hey.

• 2:43Will Arnett?

I like starting an episode with "so." We're mid-conversation. So, anyway, welcome to Smartless.

• 3:10Jason Bateman?

Listener, you'll have to excuse Will Arnett today. The things are a little sour.

• 3:16Will Arnett?

  I'm surly.

• 3:17Jason Bateman?

  He's surly today.

• 3:19Will Arnett?

He's surely surly. We recorded this the day after my beloved Toronto Maple Leafs lost.

• 3:25Jason Bateman?

  Oh, they lost last night?

• 3:26Will Arnett?

  Game seven, yeah.

• 3:27Jason Bateman?

Oh, I'm sorry. And it wasn't a great performance. Biz made that very clear.

• 3:32Will Arnett?

  Yeah, he sure did.

• 3:33Jason Bateman?

And God bless him for being honest.

• 3:35Will Arnett?

God bless Biz, Paul Bizinett, my friends, and my, you know, my co-mournor as a Leafs fan, Paul Bizinett, world's number-two Leafs fan, obviously.

• 3:47Will Arnett?

Behind me, but I am considering free agency.

• 3:49Jason Bateman?

  This is hockey, listener.

• 3:50Will Arnett?

Yeah, we're talking NHL hockey. I'm considering free agency.

• 3:53Jason Bateman?

No, no, you didn't say before we, before we started recording, you weren't considering it. You had declared that you are free agent.

• 4:00Will Arnett?

I want to test the open market. I, I, I see how it goes now in the world.

• 4:03Jason Bateman?

We'd love to have you over at the Kings.

• 4:04Will Arnett?

Okay, well, I'm open to, I'd, I'd love to hear from Luke Robitaille when the time is appropriate. I'd like to see what kind of package you could put before me.

• 4:14Jason Bateman?

Now, how do you think, how do you think Brendan Shanahan's going to feel about all this run in your mouth here? You know.

• 4:20Will Arnett?

Well, my, my, look, look, obviously, I just do this to.

• 4:23Jason Bateman?

Brendan runs a team there up in there in G-0.

• 4:26Will Arnett?

Smartless, former Smartless guest, uh, early on.

• 4:29Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 4:29Will Arnett?

  And friend of ours.

• 4:30Jason Bateman?

Yeah, he runs a team there at Toronto, and he's having a tough day today, I'll bet.

• 4:34Will Arnett?

  He knows it's a business.

• 4:35Jason Bateman?

What, your, your heart is a business?

• 4:37Will Arnett?

My, my fandom, you know, the fandom.

• 4:39Jason Bateman?

You're not going to stick with them when they, when they're hurting?

• 4:41Will Arnett?

I'm going to do what's right. I mean, look, it's nothing wrong. People test the open mar, he's tested the open market before. He's been a free agent.

• 4:46Jason Bateman?

Oh, do you think he's got his, his resume out there amongst all the clubs saying, hey, I'd love to be GM over on your?

• 4:51Will Arnett?

What do I know? That's not, that's outside.

• 4:53Jason Bateman?

I think they need you now more than ever.

• 4:54Will Arnett?

That's, what do I know? I tell you what.

• 4:56Jason Bateman?

What do you want to do? You want to run a team, Will? No, he's just looking for a team to root for that's going to win all the time. He's going to win the Stanley Cup every year.

• 5:03Will Arnett?

They've never won. They've never won in my lifetime.

• 5:05Jason Bateman?

What, the Maple Leafs have never won?

• 5:07Will Arnett?

  Never won in my lifetime.

• 5:08Jason Bateman?

  Wow.

• 5:09Will Arnett?

  1967.

• 5:09Jason Bateman?

That's like the Cubs to me, and then when they won, I cried.

• 5:12Will Arnett?

  Yeah, is that true?

• 5:13Jason Bateman?

1967 was the last time that they won?

• 5:15Will Arnett?

  Yeah, that's right.

• 5:15Jason Bateman?

Will, you were born in 58.

• 5:16Will Arnett?

  I know, so.

• 5:19Will Arnett?

It's good stuff. It's good stuff. Anyway, what else is going on?

• 5:23Jason Bateman?

  You guys look handsome today.

• 5:24Will Arnett?

  What else is going on?

• 5:24Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 5:25Will Arnett?

I didn't, I, I, I didn't even come to Sunday Fun Day, although I wasn't invited, uh, as it turned out.

• 5:30Jason Bateman?

  Oh.

• 5:31Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 5:31Jason Bateman?

Now, let's, is it subject number two to get all pissed off about?

• 5:35Will Arnett?

  I don't give a fuck.

• 5:35Jason Bateman?

We got a list. Well, how do you, what, what do you mean you weren't invited? You don't know that.

• 5:38Will Arnett?

  Yeah, I do. I, sure I do.

• 5:41Jason Bateman?

  Well, did you, uh?

• 5:42Will Arnett?

  Tell my inbox.

• 5:46Jason Bateman?

You didn't miss much. It was just burgers and chat, you know, it's typical Sunday fare.

• 5:52Will Arnett?

Yeah, I'm also a free agent with that. I'm a free agent with friends now, too.

• 5:56Jason Bateman?

Oh, really? You're looking for a new date for Sunday nights?

• 5:59Sean Hayes?

Mm-hmm. Are you drinking dishwashing soap?

• 6:02Will Arnett?

  It's water.

• 6:02Jason Bateman?

Why don't you try going to mass on Sunday nights? Do they have it at, do they have it at night on Sunday? Or is that Saturday night?

• 6:07Sean Hayes?

  Mass.

• 6:08Jason Bateman?

Mass. Isn't that what they call it?

• 6:10Will Arnett?

The Lord's house is always open, pal.

• 6:11Jason Bateman?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Will, I'm really sorry. I sent you a text early yesterday that, speaking of Jesus, that I had spoken to hockey Jesus and that Toronto was gonna be okay.

• 6:20Will Arnett?

I know. You weren't alone. I don't blame, first of all, I'm not superstitious in that way. I was texting with Ham, with John Ham, during the game and the ref, one of the refs, I'm not laughing at his misfortune, went down because he took a high stick.

• 6:34Jason Bateman?

Yeah, he took a stick right in the eye.

• 6:36Will Arnett?

Yeah, and he was bleeding all over the ice. And Ham said, is this good luck or bad luck for your team? And I said, you know, like literally in real time as it was happening, I said, I don't know. I don't, I can't, I'm actually not superstitious in that way anymore because then you're just a maniac. So I don't knock wood anymore. I don't do any of that stuff. Like, who knows? So anyway, I'm letting you off the hook.

• 6:56Jason Bateman?

Look what happened. But this is what I worry about when I, because I knock wood all the time. I got a whole series of things.

• 7:03Jason Bateman?

And Will, you, you said that you've stopped knocking on wood. Look what happened to your team last night.

• 7:07Will Arnett?

  Years ago.

• 7:08Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 7:08Jason Bateman?

Okay, well, this is the problem. This is why you have to keep up with superstition so that you can get the wins when you need them.

• 7:15Will Arnett?

  No, but thinking that.

• 7:16Jason Bateman?

  Your fault.

• 7:16Will Arnett?

Thinking about me watching the game a certain way or doing things a certain way and thinking that's gonna affect the outcome is like, that's how, that's how Charles Manson thought. Do you know what I mean?

• 7:26Jason Bateman?

Let's bring a serial killer into it. Will, you need to stop watching sports. And stop fucking with your hair.

• 7:34Will Arnett?

Here's the other thing I want to say, is that my Liverpool won the Premier League this year. So that's the good news.

• 7:40Jason Bateman?

There we go. Start singing the song right now.

• 7:44Will Arnett?

We've conquered all of Europe, we're never gonna stop. From Paris down to Turkey, we've won the fucking lot.

• 7:51Jason Bateman?

Is that the chant that they do at the end of that?

• 7:53Will Arnett?

Oh, that's the chant. Oh, no.

• 7:54Jason Bateman?

  The Pink Floyd song.

• 7:55Will Arnett?

  You Never Walk Alone.

• 7:56Jason Bateman?

Fearless, one of my favorites, favorite songs ever.

• 7:59Will Arnett?

  With hope in your heart.

• 8:02Jason Bateman?

  Sean, quiet.

• 8:05Will Arnett?

Walk alone. You'll never walk alone. Walk on.

• 8:21Jason Bateman?

Sean, you don't know this stuff.

• 8:23Will Arnett?

Never Walk Alone, but that's like an old, old, old song. What is it, Jerry the Pacemakers, I think? Listen, it's a brilliant song, it's a brilliant team, and yeah, Liverpool. I'm also, you know, because I'm, anyway, we've spent way too much time.

• 8:37Jason Bateman?

Let's talk about other things in your life.

• 8:38Will Arnett?

Yeah, go, tell me, because I got, what?

• 8:40Jason Bateman?

Will either get a hat or fucking turn your camera off. I can't see you continuing to fuck with your hair.

• 8:46Will Arnett?

These headphones are driving me crazy because I'm wearing over the ear headphones today.

• 8:49Jason Bateman?

Well, that's what we all do, okay?

• 8:51Will Arnett?

  Okay.

• 8:52Jason Bateman?

  Why is it a problem?

• 8:53Will Arnett?

Where's your earbuds? So what, then mute my camera.

• 8:58Jason Bateman?

What, how do you do it?

• 9:00Will Arnett?

Mute my camera. Where are your earbuds? I knew I needed new friends. Where are your earbuds? Hey, calm down. By the way, if there's a, if there's a wrong side of the bed that you sure woke up on it.

• 9:11Jason Bateman?

Speaking of the bed, where are you, Will? Where's, you got this nice curtain behind you and a little leather sofa?

• 9:17Will Arnett?

I'm in my new spot. I'm in my, no, no, no, I'm just in my spot here in. Okay, all right, anything else to chat about before we get to our guest? No, let's stop picking on me, let's stop picking on me.

• 9:28Jason Bateman?

Sean, what about you? What are your problems today?

• 9:30Will Arnett?

Um, uh. I can tell you. You gotta go ahead, tell me.

• 9:36Jason Bateman?

Oh, I know what's going on.

• 9:37Sean Hayes?

  I gotta stop eating sugar.

• 9:39Jason Bateman?

Yeah, listen, I had to go through a night last night with, uh, with Sean, uh, really boring all of us with the, the, the big efforts he's making to get off of sugar. It's been 48 hours. He's just talking about how he's white knuckling and how tough he is.

• 9:51Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 9:51Jason Bateman?

As he's taking sips, deep sips of cranberry juice on ice.

• 9:57Sean Hayes?

  Well, but that's.

• 9:58Jason Bateman?

  Buddy, that's just red sugar.

• 10:00Will Arnett?

Juice is sugar. You can't drink juice.

• 10:01Sean Hayes?

Yeah, but, but that, but that, your body, um, you know, whatever.

• 10:04Jason Bateman?

  What is it?

• 10:05Sean Hayes?

  Your body.

• 10:05Will Arnett?

  What is it, Doc?

• 10:06Sean Hayes?

Process, processes that kind of sugar differently because it's not processed sugar.

• 10:11Will Arnett?

  Oh, no shit.

• 10:12Sean Hayes?

  Got it. Yeah.

• 10:13Jason Bateman?

  You know, shit.

• 10:13Sean Hayes?

  So that won't, okay.

• 10:14Will Arnett?

Fuck, you know all this stuff behind you. Are, are those diplomas behind you?

• 10:17Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 10:18Jason Bateman?

And then what happened when the dessert came to the table last night?

• 10:21Sean Hayes?

I had, I had one bite and I gave the rest to Maple, your daughter. I had one bite. I can't, I just. Yeah, but that was good. That was really hard. And then I got home and I've just been shoving fruit in my mouth like crazy. Like watermelon and oranges.

• 10:34Will Arnett?

Insert joke here, but you know, uh.

• 10:38Will Arnett?

  You know.

• 10:41Sean Hayes?

Insert, yeah. I eat just shoving fruit in my mouth all day and night.

• 10:44Will Arnett?

  Did fruit mind or?

• 10:48Jason Bateman?

Does he mind being called that?

• 10:53Sean Hayes?

Oh my God. And I, and, and Jay, you know, lamented over me not having dad jokes. So I have always prepared now.

• 10:59Will Arnett?

How would you, how would you, how would you have any dad jokes?

• 11:03Sean Hayes?

  What do you mean?

• 11:04Will Arnett?

  You have no dad.

• 11:05Sean Hayes?

  Yeah. Remember he sped off?

• 11:09Sean Hayes?

  Well, that's a good one.

• 11:12Sean Hayes?

No, uh, but I have those prepared.

• 11:15Jason Bateman?

Yeah. What was the one, what was the one you told me last night that we had to work on a, we had to work on a little bit?

• 11:19Sean Hayes?

That wasn't very good. That wasn't very good. That was, uh, well, I have, I have one for you really quick. Ready?

• 11:24Jason Bateman?

  Okay.

• 11:25Will Arnett?

  Sure.

• 11:25Sean Hayes?

  Knock, knock.

• 11:26Will Arnett?

  Who's there?

• 11:27Sean Hayes?

  I eat mop.

• 11:29Jason Bateman?

I eat mop who? What happened there? How'd you do that to me?

• 11:37Jason Bateman?

Okay, guys, our next guest was in one of my favorite films of the year. He seems to have it all. He's talented, he's successful, he works with only the top people in the best projects, he's got artistic credibility and box office sock. Okay, that's what you want. You want box office sock. Sock. Okay, he's handsome, he's tall, he's got good hair.

• 11:58Sean Hayes?

  Sure.

• 11:58Jason Bateman?

Let's get him out here, let's see if he's single. Let's see how he does it all, gang. It's Nicholas Hoult. Come on out, Nicholas.

• 12:07Speaker 03

  What a reveal.

• 12:08Jason Bateman?

  Nicholas Hoult! Nicholas Hoult.

• 12:10Speaker 03

It took everything in my power when you were talking about fruit not to reveal myself right there.

• 12:15Sean Hayes?

Now you know how I feel.

• 12:16Jason Bateman?

Well, let's get right to it then. So are you single?

• 12:20Speaker 03

Uh, no, I'm not, I'm married, yeah.

• 12:21Jason Bateman?

  Oh, you are!

• 12:22Will Arnett?

  Good for you.

• 12:23Jason Bateman?

  Good for you!

• 12:23Speaker 03

And also, I don't know if my hair, I've got blonde hair now. You said good hair in the intros.

• 12:27Jason Bateman?

It's good hair. Well, blonde can be good.

• 12:29Speaker 03

Thanks. It was giving me quite a lot of anxiety sitting there. I mean, I was enjoying listening to you guys, but also I was like, this is quite stressful, the reveal thing.

• 12:37Jason Bateman?

  The reveal.

• 12:37Speaker 03

Oh, wait, really? I mean, obviously, Jason, you know it's me, but then I was like, what, Short and Wilt? Like, who?

• 12:43Jason Bateman?

  I know.

• 12:43Speaker 03

  No.

• 12:44Sean Hayes?

Wait, you guys know each other?

• 12:45Jason Bateman?

It must, a tiny bit. It must be stressful for the guest, right? This whole sort of like, you're thinking there, well, when I reveal, are they gonna be excited? Are they gonna be disappointed? Are they gonna, do I, do they know me? Do I, right? Is that, is that, is that what the thing is?

• 12:59Speaker 03

Yeah, because if I were you, I'd probably be like quickly Googling like Nicholas Hoult, quick.

• 13:03Jason Bateman?

Right, well, that's the whole reason, it's the whole reason we do the surprise guest thing.

• 13:07Will Arnett?

You're a big star, we don't need to.

• 13:08Jason Bateman?

So that, yeah. The other two people don't have to do any research, right? So Will and Sean get to just sit here and be the dummies that they are.

• 13:15Sean Hayes?

No, of course I know. I could ask you a thousand questions about Nosferatu, which you were amazing. I love that movie.

• 13:20Will Arnett?

Not a question, that was a statement. Go over the first question.

• 13:22Sean Hayes?

  No, but I have questions.

• 13:23Will Arnett?

The thousand questions, the thousand questions, go!

• 13:26Sean Hayes?

Okay, ready? The makeup, what was it like?

• 13:28Will Arnett?

  999 to go, go ahead.

• 13:33Jason Bateman?

Wait, why is your hair blonde?

• 13:34Will Arnett?

I say you have a thousand, just ask a question. I'm holding everybody's feet to the fire. Nicholas, I've had a rough 24 hours.

• 13:40Speaker 03

  I know, I'm sorry. I heard and I'm sorry. You'll get through.

• 13:46Jason Bateman?

Wait, why is the hair blonde? What's coming up for you? I can't, but you know, you work in only the greatest projects. I mean, your resume is really stunning.

• 13:53Will Arnett?

  The Order.

• 13:54Jason Bateman?

When do you stop? That's the film. That was one of my favorite films of the year.

• 13:58Will Arnett?

  Incredible.

• 13:58Speaker 03

That's where we met because you were working with Jude on your show and you came in very nicely for the Q and A for us. So, thank you for doing it.

• 14:05Will Arnett?

  Same director, right?

• 14:06Jason Bateman?

Yeah, that was really fun. Yeah, Justin Kurzell. Yep. Incredibly well-directed film. And then he directed the final two episodes of Black Rabbit. And that guy is just incredible.

• 14:14Speaker 03

Did you have fun with Justin?

• 14:16Jason Bateman?

Yeah, I love that guy. That guy, he's so good at what he does. Anyway, why is the hair blonde? What's coming up? What's that up for?

• 14:23Speaker 03

This is a movie I'm about to start called, it's called How To Rob A Bank.

• 14:28Jason Bateman?

Oh, with David Leitch, who was just on the show.

• 14:30Speaker 03

  Yeah, David's directing.

• 14:31Jason Bateman?

  Oh, yeah.

• 14:32Speaker 03

And he called me the other day and he was like, how would you feel about going blonde and trying that for this? And I was like, yeah, okay. So I went into my wife's aunt's salon yesterday and bleached my hair. And here I am.

• 14:41Jason Bateman?

  Oh, look at that.

• 14:42Will Arnett?

You went to your wife's aunt's?

• 14:43Speaker 03

So this is like my big reveal to you three guys. So tell me I look good.

• 14:47Will Arnett?

Listen Nicholas, let's give a plug for, because we plug hairdressers on this show a lot. So let's give a plug for Salon.

• 14:54Jason Bateman?

You've got Scavo, you've got Chris McMillan.

• 14:55Speaker 03

  Salon Midori.

• 14:56Jason Bateman?

  Salon Midori.

• 14:57Will Arnett?

Where is it? Where is it Nicholas?

• 14:59Speaker 03

Hang on, I can give you the full address.

• 15:01Jason Bateman?

Get ready listener, this gives you time to get your pen ready listener.

• 15:04Speaker 03

  It's in Brea, California.

• 15:06Will Arnett?

  Okay.

• 15:07Jason Bateman?

  Oh, yeah.

• 15:08Speaker 03

  Ask for Lay Cicero.

• 15:10Will Arnett?

Done. Just say the word Smartless and receive up to, I don't know, I'm just saying.

• 15:18Jason Bateman?

Wait Nicholas, do you, by the way, Nick or Nicholas?

• 15:20Speaker 03

  Nick's good, yeah.

• 15:21Jason Bateman?

Okay. So Nick, where are you, where are you right now?

• 15:24Speaker 03

I'm in Long Beach. We live down in Long Beach.

• 15:26Jason Bateman?

And is this where you live?

• 15:27Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 15:28Jason Bateman?

Oh, wow, that's nice. How long have you been here in the States?

• 15:31Speaker 03

Coming up on like seven years, I think.

• 15:34Jason Bateman?

  Oh, wow.

• 15:35Speaker 03

But like, you know, kind of roaming around throughout all that time as well. But yeah, we've been down to Long Beach for like two.

• 15:40Jason Bateman?

Now, how did you find, how did you find Long Beach? This is this, for listener, if you're not aware of Los Angeles, Long Beach is an incredible part of the city. It's the port of Los Angeles is in Long Beach. The largest port in, I think, the country. And it is not a place that you often hear people living in. Because it's just south of the city. In the business, in the business. In the business, because it's just south of the city. And so I'd like to know how you found yourself there.

• 16:08Speaker 03

Well, my wife's family are all from down this way. And so with me being on the road a lot, it made sense to be closer to her, have her, you know, a support system around. And I love it down here, to be honest with you. There was something about LA that always made me feel a little bit edgy.

• 16:21Jason Bateman?

Yeah, and it's also like, it's such an industry town, and it's nice to live a place where there's other stuff going on, I bet, yeah?

• 16:28Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, that's, that's a big part of it. And it's, it's very walkable, there's good food, nice people. It's, it's, it's a good little spot. I like it, yeah.

• 16:35Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 16:37Sean Hayes?

Let's talk about the Idaho effect. It's a feeling you get hiking the Sawtooth Mountains at sunrise, or mountain biking on hero dirt at Silver Mountain Resort, leaving you craving more. It's a feeling where the freedom to roam is real. And it's found in Idaho. Idaho might just be the last authentic place in the West. Once you have this feeling, one that stays with you long after returning home, that's the Idaho effect. Plan your Idaho vacation at visitidaho.org.

• 19:07Sean Hayes?

And now, back to the show.

• 19:11Jason Bateman?

  Now, children you have?

• 19:14Speaker 03

  Yes, we've got two boys.

• 19:17Jason Bateman?

  How old?

• 19:17Speaker 03

Which is seven and two, which is chaos. We were in A and E last night with my older one getting staples in his head because he cut his head open.

• 19:24Jason Bateman?

  Oh.

• 19:25Speaker 03

  He's fine, he's fine.

• 19:26Jason Bateman?

Boys will take you to the emergency room. Will, you can attest to that guy.

• 19:30Will Arnett?

I have three boys. I've been many times to the emergency... Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 19:33Jason Bateman?

I have two girls, only once, only once.

• 19:35Will Arnett?

  Only once.

• 19:36Jason Bateman?

  Are you serious?

• 19:37Will Arnett?

I had my eldest, who's 16 now, once when he was about 11, he broke his arm. He had it in a cast. He got it off, and the day he got it off, he re-broke it.

• 19:48Jason Bateman?

What? No way. Why don't I remember that? That's Archie?

• 19:51Will Arnett?

Yeah. Well, how would you remember him? You don't even know what your own... Anyway, it was Archie.

• 19:56Jason Bateman?

How did he do it each time?

• 19:58Will Arnett?

Just each time, just foolish, just running, falling, tripping. He used to have this sort of proclivity to run one direction, but be looking the other direction constantly.

• 20:11Jason Bateman?

  He's super bright, Nick.

• 20:12Will Arnett?

You'd see him running, going this way, and going like, ah, and then fall.

• 20:16Jason Bateman?

  Oh, really?

• 20:17Will Arnett?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, anyway. Anyway, so I've been there. So it's a... You got your hands full. Two and seven, that's a good spread.

• 20:23Speaker 03

Right, that's a nice, yeah. Yeah, it's a good little spread. But yeah, my poor wife at the moment, she, he was in A and E. I tore, I tore my ACL like last week. No.

• 20:32Jason Bateman?

  Oh, you did?

• 20:32Speaker 03

  Just last week? Yeah, yeah.

• 20:34Jason Bateman?

  How'd you do that?

• 20:36Speaker 03

  Playing basketball.

• 20:37Jason Bateman?

You see, we're just too old to do it now. Nick, you're considerably younger than us, but you're still too old.

• 20:42Speaker 03

This was the really sad, this was what hurt more than the injury was I was back and then I was like Google MDing. I was like, oh no, what's happened, blah, blah. And when I found out it was a full tear of this, and I looked it up and, and like the AI review of the injury was like, most frequent in mid, middle aged people who play jumping sports.

• 20:58Jason Bateman?

  Oh, really?

• 20:59Speaker 03

And I was like, oh, there's no need for the middle ages, like throwing that at me.

• 21:03Jason Bateman?

Have you already gone in and done the, the, the repair on it?

• 21:07Speaker 03

No, not yet. No, no, no. I'm kind of like rehabbing at the moment, then we'll do that once. Once you finish the film. Yeah.

• 21:12Jason Bateman?

  Oh, really?

• 21:13Speaker 03

Yeah, of course. Yeah, you can't. It's a big.

• 21:15Jason Bateman?

You can hobble around on it?

• 21:16Speaker 03

I could, I can get around, oh, right now. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But if I did the surgery, I think I couldn't for a while.

• 21:22Jason Bateman?

But I hear that that's just sort of outpatient stuff nowadays. They just like go in there with like a little, little hose camera and like, sweep it up and get out.

• 21:31Speaker 03

No, I think for this they have to, because it's a complete tear, I think they like cut out a piece of my patella with the bone and screw that in.

• 21:38Jason Bateman?

  Oh, man.

• 21:38Speaker 03

And then they drill into the side of your knee. I don't know. I don't, it doesn't sound great. No. No, it sounds pretty terrible, to be honest.

• 21:45Jason Bateman?

So, but now you're gonna, this is, you gotta wait till after the David Leach thing. That, there's stunts in that. He's, he does stunt stuff and you're, it's called How to Rob a Bank. There's gonna be activity in that. How are you gonna do that?

• 21:56Speaker 03

Activity? Uh, yeah, I'm gonna, I'm gonna figure that out. That's why I'm rehabbing at the moment. We'll see, we'll see how strong I can get beforehand.

• 22:03Jason Bateman?

Now, you robbed the hell out of a bank in The Order. God, everybody, you gotta see The Order. That movie's so good.

• 22:09Speaker 03

Yeah, I'm on a good, I'm on a good bank robbing run.

• 22:11Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 22:12Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 22:12Jason Bateman?

Um, how does this one differ from that as far as the bank robbery stuff? Is it, uh? Is it more involved?

• 22:19Speaker 03

It's modern, but I would say it's more of a Robin Hood-esque story in terms of my character, the why he's gotten into this and how he's kind of revolutionizing a movement around it for good causes, essentially, yeah.

• 22:34Jason Bateman?

  Right.

• 22:35Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, that's cool.

• 22:37Jason Bateman?

Now, what about, what about Nishan? I don't think you know this yet and, or haven't really processed it yet, but I bet you Scotty has, considering his screensaver. Oh, yeah. Nick's coming up in Superman.

• 22:50Sean Hayes?

  I know.

• 22:50Jason Bateman?

  Okay, as Lex Luthor.

• 22:52Sean Hayes?

  That's so great.

• 22:53Jason Bateman?

That is released in July, correct? Is that right?

• 22:57Speaker 03

  Yes, July 11th, yeah.

• 22:58Jason Bateman?

All right, so what was that, was that?

• 23:01Will Arnett?

  Daunting?

• 23:02Jason Bateman?

Can you talk about what version of Lex Luthor this is? Because he's had different occupations in the past, correct?

• 23:08Speaker 03

Yes, he's, yeah, I mean, there's so many different variations of it through the comics and the films and in terms of what he is. James Gunn likes to describe him almost as a...

• 23:19Jason Bateman?

  That's the director, yes?

• 23:20Speaker 03

Almost, yes, almost as a saucer in this, the level of science he's working on. But, you know, he's a, yeah, tech billionaire, defense. And you, and you, and you, and we start this Superman story like in an already developed metropolis, kind of you're thrown into a world and universe that's already fully imagined and all these, you know, characters that have been around for a minute and you kind of catch up with where you're at.

• 23:46Will Arnett?

It's, it's, it's the appropriate thing nowadays, right? To make the villain a tech billionaire. But that, that kind of lines up. You go like, it's not a straight, you don't go like, what? You go, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's right, that's right.

• 23:56Jason Bateman?

  That's not believable.

• 23:58Speaker 03

It certainly, it certainly seems very, very apt, yeah.

• 24:00Jason Bateman?

What, what, did you have, did you have a villain look in that? What, what did you, what did you?

• 24:06Will Arnett?

Isn't he traditionally, wasn't he, he's traditionally been bald headed, right? Is that right?

• 24:09Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, yeah, no, I shaved, I shaved my head off.

• 24:11Sean Hayes?

  Oh, you did?

• 24:12Speaker 03

Shaved my head off, shaved my hair off. Just the whole head.

• 24:16Jason Bateman?

So you went, so you shaved it complete? Shaved it completely clean?

• 24:20Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 24:21Jason Bateman?

And then what was the grow back process on that? Because I hear some people worry about that, that their hair's never going to come back.

• 24:27Speaker 03

It, it came back, maybe not, maybe not as full and lush as I'm wonderful, I don't know.

• 24:33Sean Hayes?

Wait, did you have to shave it? I had to shave my head for a movie, movie called The Three Stooges, very similar.

• 24:39Will Arnett?

That was a picture. They're so crazy.

• 24:44Jason Bateman?

Sorry, it's an inside thingy that's not funny.

• 24:47Sean Hayes?

But I had to shave it.

• 24:48Will Arnett?

These soldiers are some kind of bananas.

• 24:55Jason Bateman?

It's the presence in that room.

• 24:58Sean Hayes?

It is. That's a good reverb in that room. Wait, Nick, did you have to? I had to shave it twice a day because it would start, right? The stubble would start showing. Did you have to shave it?

• 25:06Speaker 03

You've got a lot of growth, yeah.

• 25:07Sean Hayes?

Yeah, I mean, did you have to shave it twice a day?

• 25:10Speaker 03

No, it was once, it was once a day, but then they'd kind of spray paint over the top of it.

• 25:13Sean Hayes?

Oh, I see, I see. It was better than a bald cap and doing all that, right?

• 25:17Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, I haven't really done the bald cap thing too much, but I feel like it's like wearing a swimming cap throughout the day and it gets all hot and sweaty and bubbly.

• 25:24Sean Hayes?

And where did you film it? Because what part of the country?

• 25:27Jason Bateman?

  We filmed Planet, Sean.

• 25:30Will Arnett?

You want to do a tour of their locations? What are you doing?

• 25:33Sean Hayes?

No, because I wanted to know if it was hot or not, because it was.

• 25:36Jason Bateman?

Oh, great question. Now I understand.

• 25:42Jason Bateman?

Because of the shaved head, you want to know if it was?

• 25:45Sean Hayes?

Well, because my thing is, when I shaved my head, when I shaved my head every single day, it was in Atlanta, it was so hot that when I went into my hotel to sleep, I cranked up the AC and I had to wear a ski hat, ski cap on my head because the AC was so cold on my bald head. Anyway.

• 26:01Will Arnett?

This guy doesn't know whether he's coming or going.

• 26:05Jason Bateman?

You didn't want to just turn down the AC, ding dong?

• 26:08Sean Hayes?

  No, no, no.

• 26:09Jason Bateman?

Yeah, I wouldn't want to do that.

• 26:11Sean Hayes?

  No, no.

• 26:11Jason Bateman?

  Got it.

• 26:12Sean Hayes?

  Anyway.

• 26:12Will Arnett?

Anyway, you want to know if you had a similar experience?

• 26:15Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 26:16Will Arnett?

To your fucking lunacy that you were going through?

• 26:19Speaker 03

I can relate. It wasn't self-inju- we shot a little bit of the film in Svalbard.

• 26:24Sean Hayes?

  Where's that?

• 26:24Speaker 03

It's kind of near the Arctic Circle, in the Arctic Circle.

• 26:27Sean Hayes?

  Oh, wow.

• 26:28Speaker 03

Norwegian island up there. And so that was very cold and my head was, you know, naked.

• 26:34Sean Hayes?

  That's what I'm saying.

• 26:35Speaker 03

  And it would get chilly.

• 26:36Sean Hayes?

  That's what I'm saying.

• 26:37Will Arnett?

No, no, no, it's not what you're saying. He was wearing a fucking hat because it was cold.

• 26:41Sean Hayes?

And he was in the Arctic Circle.

• 26:42Will Arnett?

Because he was in the Arctic Circle.

• 26:43Sean Hayes?

  Not the Omni.

• 26:43Will Arnett?

  Not in the hottest city.

• 26:47Speaker 03

Well, no, I refused the hat. There was a hat as part of the costume, but I said no to the hat because I was like.

• 26:53Will Arnett?

Saying hi to the Hawks players as they were coming back from a road trip.

• 26:57Jason Bateman?

Great win, fellas. Anyone cold? Sorry, Dick.

• 27:02Will Arnett?

  Sorry, Nick.

• 27:03Jason Bateman?

  Pretty slappy today.

• 27:04Will Arnett?

  We are very sl-.

• 27:05Jason Bateman?

Now, let's go, let's go all the way back.

• 27:07Will Arnett?

I was gonna say the same, let's go all the way go back.

• 27:09Jason Bateman?

Well, would you like to start it about a boy, Will? Is that where your questions are coming from?

• 27:14Will Arnett?

I just wanna know how it all started, Nick. How did you become you? You're so good at what you do. How did that all?

• 27:18Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 27:19Will Arnett?

What was the beginning of your journey? What was the day that you woke up and went, "Oh, today I wanna be an actor"?

• 27:25Speaker 03

Yeah. There's, uh, well, I was lucky. My, my, my mom and dad weren't involved in the business, but my older brother and sister, um, my older brother really loved acting and my older sister did a lot of singing and dancing and, um, and was very talented with that as well. So it kind of-

• 27:39Jason Bateman?

  And now they hate you.

• 27:40Speaker 03

And now they detest me. No, they, so they, that was their hobby and passion and it kind of, you know, being the third sibling, I kind of just ended up being like, alright, you end up in, in dance classes or in like-

• 27:51Jason Bateman?

  Right, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 27:52Speaker 03

Theater shows and whatever. You kind of just get dragged. So it was kind of like the, you know, the family hobby in some ways that then, through them being skilled, managed to like get, get lucky and get an agent and then kind of, yeah, um, keep doing it. And so it's-

• 28:04Jason Bateman?

  Are they still doing it?

• 28:05Speaker 03

Uh, not at the moment, no. My little sister still works in film. She works as an A D. But my brother's a forensic chemist and my, my older sister, uh-

• 28:12Jason Bateman?

  Wow.

• 28:12Speaker 03

-teaches dancing, um, and stuff. So, yeah, so there's-

• 28:16Jason Bateman?

Wait, your youngest is an A D?

• 28:18Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 28:19Jason Bateman?

Uh, that's awesome. That's the hardest job on the set, first A D. That and first A C, I think.

• 28:25Speaker 03

Um, yeah, the, the, the base running can be very difficult because you have to, you know, tell people to get out of their trailers a lot.

• 28:30Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, exactly.

• 28:31Speaker 03

And some people don't wanna leave.

• 28:32Jason Bateman?

  Inviting-

• 28:33Will Arnett?

Sean, do you wanna explain the A D department to Tracy? Or is that too long?

• 28:36Jason Bateman?

  Sure. I don't, that, it's, it's assistant director, right?

• 28:40Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 28:40Jason Bateman?

First, first A D. You wanna start with clarifying what the acronym is? No, but I meant like, is, like, you said first A C. I don't know what A C is. Assistant camera.

• 28:49Will Arnett?

  Camera.

• 28:49Jason Bateman?

  Oh, oh, oh, oh.

• 28:50Will Arnett?

No, but the, the assistant, first assistant director in their job and then the people who were for them, then the second and the second, second, those people are the people who in, in effect-

• 28:59Jason Bateman?

  They run the whole thing.

• 29:00Will Arnett?

Run the skeleton of the film, as it were. They keep the trains running on time. They do all the things. Their jobs are so immense.

• 29:06Jason Bateman?

Yeah, they don't, they don't stop from the second they wake up.

• 29:09Will Arnett?

  Couldn't be more important.

• 29:10Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 29:11Will Arnett?

  All right.

• 29:12Jason Bateman?

  Great.

• 29:12Will Arnett?

  So.

• 29:14Jason Bateman?

  About a Boy.

• 29:15Will Arnett?

A word from our sponsor, do you think?

• 29:17Jason Bateman?

We just want to leave a little break for the commercial. Now, was About a Boy the first project that you did? Or was it the first thing that really kind of like launched you into

• 29:29Will Arnett?

  Like broke through, yeah.

• 29:30Jason Bateman?

  Public viewing?

• 29:32Speaker 03

Yeah, that was a kind of a breakthrough, I guess. I'd been in a few things before in England, but yeah, that was the one that was like,

• 29:39Jason Bateman?

  And you were 11, yeah?

• 29:40Speaker 03

  We're different, yeah.

• 29:41Will Arnett?

What was your first professional job?

• 29:43Speaker 03

First professional job? I think I did a play when I was like three or four, and then I did a film called Intimate Relations.

• 29:51Jason Bateman?

  Huh.

• 29:51Speaker 03

  When I was five.

• 29:54Jason Bateman?

  Explain that one?

• 29:55Will Arnett?

  Yeah, I mean.

• 29:57Speaker 03

You know what? I remember the audition for that because it was very easy, I thought. They were like, I will sit under this table and pretend to eat cake.

• 30:04Jason Bateman?

  I can do that.

• 30:05Speaker 03

I can do that. Sure, good. All right, all right, Sean.

• 30:08Will Arnett?

That's how Sean does it now because he doesn't want anybody to know he's eating sugar, so he goes.

• 30:11Jason Bateman?

Yeah, and I'm not even auditioning.

• 30:14Jason Bateman?

Now, what did that? So you're 11 and this thing happens and I imagine it was a fun experience. And then it comes out and it's kind of a big hit. And what was the adjustment from being just a kid to like, Like, did your friends start to

• 30:29Will Arnett?

  Treat you differently.

• 30:29Jason Bateman?

Say, what's, yeah, what's going on with you?

• 30:32Sean Hayes?

Yeah, because About a Boy was so huge.

• 30:34Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 30:35Speaker 03

Oh, this is getting into a bit of a therapy session here now.

• 30:38Jason Bateman?

Yeah, just lay down if you need to.

• 30:41Speaker 03

Yeah, I suppose that was a bit weird because it was like, I don't know, fairly recognizable for a little bit through it.

• 30:49Speaker 03

But luckily, it's also like one of those things where also like, you know, it's like kids don't care. They'd care and then they don't care and everything like passes so quickly that it's like one of those things where you're like, yeah, whatever. You just get on with life.

• 30:59Jason Bateman?

You're starting to get a bunch of attention at school and some of the boys might not like that, right?

• 31:05Will Arnett?

  Jealous?

• 31:06Speaker 03

You know what, most people were pretty nice. Most people were pretty nice.

• 31:08Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 31:09Speaker 03

Yeah, it was, it was kind of.

• 31:11Will Arnett?

  I'm projecting.

• 31:12Speaker 03

But it makes you self-conscious of yourself, I suppose, more than anything else.

• 31:16Will Arnett?

  Of course.

• 31:17Speaker 03

  Right, right, right.

• 31:17Will Arnett?

I can't imagine at that age, yeah, feeling like, feeling like, because some people are mentioning it and some people are looking at you and then you feel like, is everybody looking? And it would make you very self-conscious. And if you're young, especially in those adolescent years, which are tough enough as it is, it must be, it must be quite tricky, really.

• 31:36Speaker 03

Yeah, you become like, I suppose, yeah, even more of a version of like, so, yeah, just being like self-aware in a horrible, in a horrible way, which you probably don't want.

• 31:45Jason Bateman?

Were you like, were you like, this was like a fun, a fun hobby, a good, good reason to mix, to miss class and, or were you thinking, great, I've got a nice jumpstart on my career? Like, did you decide this is what I'm gonna do the rest of my life at that point?

• 31:57Speaker 03

No, because I, I, everyone talks about how child actors often fall apart and fail and how it doesn't work out for them. So that, like, you're aware of that conversation. So you're kind of like, oh, you know, there's a good chance.

• 32:07Jason Bateman?

  Keeping your options.

• 32:08Speaker 03

So I would say I was, in the back of my mind, I was like, oh, I like this. I'd like to carry on doing this. But also I was kind of reserved about it a little bit where I was like, hmm, there's a good chance it doesn't work out, so don't like.

• 32:17Jason Bateman?

  Right.

• 32:17Will Arnett?

Or Jason, Jason, you're not, not, you're not unfamiliar with this sensation?

• 32:22Jason Bateman?

Yeah, so did you, did you, like me, when, when it came time to like finish high school and, and now it's like the decision about going on and going into college and actually studying up on, on, on an industry or an occupation? What was that decision like? You had some momentum going at that moment? Did you make a decision like, screw it, I'm all in?

• 32:42Speaker 03

At that moment, I was lucky. I, I did a TV show in England called Skins. And that, we did the first series and then, and then once, and then found out that the second series was gonna happen. And that was one of those things where it was around the time I started my A-levels, which is when you're seventeen, eighteen in school. And I would realize I was kind of like. Half focusing on on school and half focusing on work and I wasn't really fully into either. So I was like, you know what, I'm just gonna commit and then um give the acting a try and see how it goes. And if I need, I can come back to school.

• 33:09Jason Bateman?

And you thought maybe I'll give it three, four years, something like that. Cause like that's like, it's a it's a real roll of the dice, right? Because you'd have to go back into college and it's, yeah, it's stressful.

• 33:20Speaker 03

Yeah, and there wasn't anything that I was particularly good at either.

• 33:23Jason Bateman?

What do you think you would have done if you had to do something different?

• 33:27Speaker 03

I really have no idea because I'm not good at anything.

• 33:28Will Arnett?

That's what I always, I say the same thing, I'm not joking, I always say I'm not good at anything.

• 33:32Jason Bateman?

What would you have liked to have done if if you couldn't have acted?

• 33:35Speaker 03

Oh, just be a race car driver.

• 33:38Jason Bateman?

  For real?

• 33:38Speaker 03

  Or a rock star or

• 33:39Jason Bateman?

  F1?

• 33:40Speaker 03

Or a writer or something. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I enjoy watching F1, yeah.

• 33:43Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 33:44Speaker 03

I don't know, I didn't, I didn't really have a backup. But I think the one thing that I like, I like the eclectic mix that acting allows you to like do, kind of be a jack of all trades.

• 33:52Will Arnett?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 33:53Speaker 03

I don't think I, I don't think I excel at anything particularly, but I can kind of dibble, dabble a little bit in lots of things.

• 33:58Jason Bateman?

Yeah, you get to do, you get to do everything, you know, which you certainly have done. I mean, the the the variance in projects that you that you do and filmmakers that you work with, I mean, it's a

• 34:11Sean Hayes?

Yeah, a lot of people chase fame and other people chase the work. And I think, and I feel it.

• 34:19Will Arnett?

No, no, just say it again, because I've got a blank T-shirt I was looking to fill.

• 34:27Sean Hayes?

And Nick, you always seem like you chase the work and you're not interested in any of the flashy stuff.

• 34:32Will Arnett?

Sean, what would you have done if you hadn't done this?

• 34:34Sean Hayes?

  I, I, I, what, this podcast?

• 34:39Sean Hayes?

No, I, I, I'm with you guys, I don't know how to do anything else, I mean, I can play.

• 34:43Jason Bateman?

Were you drawn to anything at like a college, college age?

• 34:46Sean Hayes?

I mean, I thought I was gonna be a conductor and I thought I was gonna compose film scores.

• 34:49Jason Bateman?

  That's right.

• 34:50Will Arnett?

JB, what about you? What would you, sorry, what would you do if you could, the same thing you asked Nick, what would you do if you could?

• 34:55Jason Bateman?

I wanted to, uh, I, I wanted to be an architect, I wanted to like design residential homes.

• 35:01Sean Hayes?

Wow, you have to draw really well.

• 35:03Jason Bateman?

And I can't really draw really, I just like, I like architecture.

• 35:06Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, I do too.

• 35:07Jason Bateman?

I would have, I would have gone into that, would have had to have. A partner that knew the math.

• 35:10Sean Hayes?

But anything, but any answer that you play out like architect or whatever, then you go, God, I have to go to school and then I have to draw and everything. Like it's so, there's so much work involved where acting feels it's just like you're playing. Like, like you're lucky enough.

• 35:23Jason Bateman?

But the trade off with that is that you've got no, you've got no guarantee of employment.

• 35:27Sean Hayes?

  I know, that's, that's true.

• 35:28Will Arnett?

I would have been, I would have been a bartender at a Club Med.

• 35:32Jason Bateman?

  Just asking for beads?

• 35:34Will Arnett?

Nah, just fucking, just fuck it. Just flip flops all the time and just fuck it.

• 35:38Sean Hayes?

  And cigarettes?

• 35:39Will Arnett?

Whatevs. Whatevs. Just ride it out.

• 35:43Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 35:45Jason Bateman?

  We'll be right back.

• 35:48Sean Hayes?

Let's talk about the Idaho effect. It's a feeling you get hiking the Sawtooth Mountains at sunrise. Or mountain biking on hero dirt at Silver Mountain Resort, leaving you craving more. It's a feeling where the freedom to roam is real. And it's found in Idaho. Idaho might just be the last authentic place in the West. Once you have this feeling, one that stays with you long after returning home, that's the Idaho effect. Plan your Idaho vacation at visitidaho.org.

• 37:39Jason Bateman?

  And back to the show.

• 37:42Jason Bateman?

But seriously, Nick, how are you picking your jobs? It seems like you're looking at kind of who's in it, who's directing it, kind of what's the quality of it as opposed to what's the star-making potential of it?

• 37:54Speaker 03

No, no, no, I'm chasing fame and money.

• 37:56Jason Bateman?

  No, you're not.

• 37:59Speaker 03

  Like a rabid animal, I just can't.

• 38:02Jason Bateman?

I'll bet you get a bunch of that low-hanging fruit passed right underneath your nose, and you've been very disciplined.

• 38:08Speaker 03

Yeah, I try to be. It's one of those where, yeah, I feel like, you know, I just want to do good work and have like, when I'm sitting in my rocking chair in 50 years' time looking back, I can be like, oh yeah, you like, you tried to really create special things each time.

• 38:23Will Arnett?

Are there any roles, and without naming names, are there any roles that you turned down that you went like, I wish I had done it?

• 38:30Speaker 03

You know what, I think for the first time, there was maybe one where the person got nominated for an Oscar.

• 38:37Jason Bateman?

  Oh, really?

• 38:37Speaker 03

  And I was like, ugh.

• 38:39Jason Bateman?

Now, did they play the part the way that you would have?

• 38:42Speaker 03

Oh, much better, much better. That's always the thing, whenever there's a role that you don't get, or that someone else does or whatever, there's like, there's always a thing where you watch it and you're like, you're like, oh yeah, no, I see.

• 38:52Will Arnett?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 38:53Speaker 03

  It's different.

• 38:53Jason Bateman?

And it's very classy that you're not mentioning what that is too. I think some actors that they mention, and then the only, the person that feels like shit is the person who actually did the part.

• 39:02Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 39:03Jason Bateman?

Because it's like, oh, so I was second.

• 39:05Speaker 03

  Right.

• 39:05Will Arnett?

  Right, right, right.

• 39:06Speaker 03

But there's always that, you know, whenever like, there's always a list that goes, like, the turnover of projects, I'm sure you guys see it all the time when it's like, oh, this script's been around for a minute, it was this person for a while, then it's this person.

• 39:17Jason Bateman?

Yeah, I'm just finishing up one of those. Pedro Pascal was set to do The Bird on Plane. Anyway, what do you think about?

• 39:23Will Arnett?

God, he would have been great.

• 39:24Jason Bateman?

  I know, right?

• 39:25Will Arnett?

No, I'm sorry, I'm just imagining him in a new setting.

• 39:28Jason Bateman?

It would have been good. Now, what about, uh, what, uh, doing X-Men? Again, Scotty just should just grab the ceiling. That was, uh...

• 39:39Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, he loves it.

• 39:41Jason Bateman?

I would, uh, so, doing, doing X-Men, or like Mad Max, or Superman, like, you are, you are sneaking in some big commercial films as well. Those, those, that work process on that is, uh, it's, you're only doing like a half a page a day, and it's, it's, uh, right, the apparatus is just huge. Do you like doing that? Or do you prefer doing the smaller films where you're really chugging along, and you gotta do a bunch of pages a day? And it's a lot of, it's more acting than it is sort of, uh, stunts and effects and things like that?

• 40:15Speaker 03

It, it's different. I, I really enjoy the stunt process of those things. But I, for those bigger ones like that, it's more of like an experience. Like, I can clearly remember, like, some of the days on, on Mad Max, where we'd be in the, maybe in desert. And you know, the, the, they'd give the signal for everyone to start up their engines, and you'd hear all these V8s and V12s, and all these engines like, start up around you, and then you couldn't hear anything else apart from the thunder of that taking off across the desert. And you're like, wow, in terms of life experiences, that doesn't get...

• 40:40Jason Bateman?

  That's cool.

• 40:42Speaker 03

Like, any, any more exciting than that. The hairs on my arms would stand up each time. But then, but then also, yeah, it's fun to then go and do like...

• 40:48Jason Bateman?

And I'm immediately thinking about all the dust. And that, how far base camp is from set.

• 40:54Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 40:55Jason Bateman?

You know, what, what kind of, is it, am I gonna have an umbrella? Umbrella near my chair, cause it's probably all just really hot.

• 41:02Sean Hayes?

It is though, but to Jason's question, the comfort level of doing like an indie, like a super small budget compared to when you're used to doing bigger films like that, you have to adjust your expectations about how the day's gonna go in terms of comfort, right?

• 41:17Jason Bateman?

It's not cushy on the, on some of these, right?

• 41:19Sean Hayes?

It's not, yeah. It's, it's bad. It's bad on the indies.

• 41:24Will Arnett?

Boy, lots, not a question in there.

• 41:26Jason Bateman?

  No.

• 41:27Will Arnett?

Two, two hosts and not one question.

• 41:31Jason Bateman?

Now, how do you, how do you like the whole, how do you like the whole press part of it? Like doing crap like this and like, cause when you do those bigger films and Superman certainly.

• 41:40Will Arnett?

Yeah, I was just thinking about you saying July 11th, you know, the date, obviously, and something you worked on. But it's like, this is the lead, I mean, you've, you've got a, you've got a long road ahead of you. Not to make it too daunting, I'm sorry. But you know that.

• 41:51Jason Bateman?

Those films, yeah, so listener, so, so they, you do these big films, they make you, they fly around, not make you. I don't mean to sound like we're complaining, but you do, it is very robust. The whole thing, all the chat and giggle stuff you gotta do.

• 42:06Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 42:07Jason Bateman?

How do you like doing that?

• 42:08Speaker 03

You know what, I've, I've tried to flip my thinking on it in like the last year or a bit or something. So where I was like, ah, I used to kind of, not dread it, there was, there was part of me that was like, oh, it's quite fun. But I guess that slight introvert part of me was like, I don't know about, you know? And then I realized I've got to play, I've got to like perform and play the game better of what it is.

• 42:26Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 42:26Speaker 03

Do you know what I mean?

• 42:27Will Arnett?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 42:27Speaker 03

Like you are, you are ultimately a salesman at that point.

• 42:30Will Arnett?

And I think somebody said to me a long time, they don't pay you to do the movie, they pay you to promote it.

• 42:34Jason Bateman?

  Right.

• 42:34Speaker 03

  Right.

• 42:35Will Arnett?

Right. And so when you look at it that way, you go like, okay, this is the big, this is a big part of the job right now.

• 42:40Speaker 03

Yeah, so I've got to be a better salesman.

• 42:42Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 42:42Jason Bateman?

Right, well, but you, but as you said it, and, and I've been accused of this as well, and I think they're right, of being an introvert. I, I, I don't, I'm, this is not comfortable for me.

• 42:52Will Arnett?

I don't, I don't want to say that, you're not an introvert, you're boring, like, you know what I mean? And I think there's a distinction there. Do you know what I mean?

• 43:00Speaker 03

That's what my fear is, I'm like, I'm boring, I just want to stay at home, I want to go and do my acting, I hope people like it. And then like, that's kind of it.

• 43:06Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, but.

• 43:06Speaker 03

It is effortful, it is effortful.

• 43:09Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, I'm, but yeah, there's a, there's a certain ham gene, a healthy ham gene that I don't have.

• 43:15Will Arnett?

Well, you feel like you're bragging is part of the problem, right?

• 43:18Jason Bateman?

That and, or also just like demanding attention, even just, and I've talked about it before, making a toast. I just cringe myself out, standing up and, and demanding attention.

• 43:29Will Arnett?

Well, you know what, I was thinking about you in the flipping and doing the toast and stuff. When we had our friend's birthday recently, a month ago, and you guys went and I couldn't go because of work. And I was thinking about the toast and I remember I wrote that toast for.

• 43:41Jason Bateman?

  Right.

• 43:42Will Arnett?

I still wrote it to have and Bradley delivered it while.

• 43:45Sean Hayes?

  It was hilarious.

• 43:46Will Arnett?

  Even though I didn't go.

• 43:47Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, it was hilarious.

• 43:48Jason Bateman?

We haven't even talked about that, right?

• 43:49Will Arnett?

In the toast that made Bradley go, he does this whole thing. It was for Robert's birthday for Downey. And then I said, and Jason Bateman, I said, Jason, would you please stand up? So Bradley's reading and he says, Jason, would you please stand up? Jason stands up and Bradley reads, look at this, look at this monkey. I can make him do anything I want. I'm not even here. Anyway.

• 44:08Jason Bateman?

The roof died. It was very.

• 44:09Will Arnett?

But the point, but here's the flip JB, which is, and it kind of goes along the lines of you're being paid to do it. Is making a toast is it's not about you. Think about it. It's about, it's for the other person. So you're making it about you and it shouldn't be. You're doing it. So I don't necessarily want to go and do it. And I don't want to make a speech at somebody's birthday, even though it seems like I do, or I want the attention. You're doing it for that person because they want it. And if you look at it through that lens, it's much easier.

• 44:39Jason Bateman?

  That's a good point.

• 44:40Speaker 03

Yeah, there was like a really interesting thing I was reading the other week and I'm butchering it completely. But what you said there was like being introverted is like a self centered thing in many ways. And when you're kind of bold in an interaction instantly, it puts the other person at ease.

• 44:53Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 44:53Speaker 03

And I've got friends who I see do it all the time and they'll, they'll meet someone for the first time and they'll instantly like break the ice so brilliantly. And do these things where you're like, oh, wow. You can just see how.

• 45:01Sean Hayes?

Well, because, because it's the work for, somebody told me a long time ago, you're not allowed to be shy after nine years old. Because that just means you just don't want to do the work.

• 45:09Will Arnett?

And I will say this, I'm not saying that JB, that you're not a kind or, or, or, and I don't think that you're self centered. I think that it's much more, you look at a guy like Kimmel. Kimmel goes out of his way and he does stuff and he hosts stuff and he gets, and he gives toast and he does it. I mean endlessly.

• 45:24Sean Hayes?

  Work.

• 45:24Will Arnett?

Endlessly. And he does it because he's very open hearted about it and he understands that it's important to the other person to do it.

• 45:30Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 45:31Will Arnett?

  Right?

• 45:31Jason Bateman?

Yeah. If I think about it that way, I would, I would do it much more.

• 45:34Will Arnett?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 45:35Jason Bateman?

You're right. That feels good. Think about fifty six.

• 45:38Will Arnett?

That's why I've got your eulogy written right here.

• 45:40Sean Hayes?

  It's ready?

• 45:41Will Arnett?

I just finished it today. Well, I talked to a doctor.

• 45:44Sean Hayes?

  Ready to go?

• 45:44Will Arnett?

I talked, hey, side zoom after this. Is that cool?

• 45:50Will Arnett?

  Just to go over it.

• 45:52Speaker 03

All right, I'd like to go back to Lex Luthor, because this is a major movie that's coming out.

• 45:56Will Arnett?

  I know, I know, I love Superman.

• 45:57Sean Hayes?

Did you have a, did you have a voice for him, or is it your regular voice, or did you?

• 46:02Speaker 03

I'm doing an American accent, I did, I did a, a voice, yeah.

• 46:04Sean Hayes?

  Okay, good, I love that.

• 46:06Speaker 03

I worked with a, an opera coach a little bit on.

• 46:08Will Arnett?

  Oh, really?

• 46:09Speaker 03

Which sounds like then the voice is gonna be so different, but I was just trying to place the voice differently to where my voice is.

• 46:14Sean Hayes?

Yeah, yeah, I get it, that's cool, I love that.

• 46:16Will Arnett?

Like, sort of like the top of your head type thing, or something like that, you mean?

• 46:20Speaker 03

I'm trying to get it more from my, my stomach, I suppose, and all that, because sometimes, particularly when you're then doing an accent, it's like it becomes, because you're trying to change everything in your mouth and throat in terms of how you're saying the sounds.

• 46:32Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 46:32Speaker 03

It can become placed there a little bit differently and stuff.

• 46:35Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 46:35Speaker 03

Oh, wow. Yeah. How do you like doing the, the American accent, is it easy to you?

• 46:41Will Arnett?

Yeah, I was gonna just ask that.

• 46:43Speaker 03

I wouldn't say it's easy, because then when I do a bad one, everyone will be like, "Hmm, not that easy." Is it comfortable, how about that? It gets, it gets comfortable, is the, is the, that's the aim, whenever you, like, I'm just starting to work on this new accent for this new thing, and it's kind of, it's an American accent, but it's different to what I've done before, so then instantly it becomes like, at the moment, it still sounds alien in my head, you know, it's like, "Ugh," and then, and then hopefully with enough repetition, by the time we get to shooting, it'll feel like something that I can be like.

• 47:09Will Arnett?

All right, now, are you just working on, are you just working on the, on the material that you've got to work on for the film, or are you trying to inhabit it sort of in the day to day, when you're doing the dishes, etc., or playing with the kids, trying to get that, those American cadences, etc.?

• 47:24Speaker 03

  Uh-oh.

• 47:25Will Arnett?

Oh. Nice work, Will. Did I froze him out? Yeah.

• 47:30Speaker 03

Let's take a quick little looksee here. Can you guys hear me?

• 47:34Will Arnett?

  Yes. Hello, there you are.

• 47:35Speaker 03

Now we can, yes, sorry, I don't know what happened. Here he comes in video, hold on. I'm sweating now.

• 47:40Will Arnett?

Now you're sweating. Yeah, see, that's what happened. Here we go, this is gonna be, Nick, this is gonna be, this is gonna be seamless. Uh, my question was, do you, do you do the accent all day, or do you just?

• 47:51Sean Hayes?

  Like around kids and stuff?

• 47:52Will Arnett?

Or do you just do it for the material that you're working on, or do you try to do it incorporated into your day to day, and like when you're doing the dishes and playing with the kids, etc.?

• 47:59Speaker 03

I don't do it at home. I'd like, but I'll do it home. It depends, it depends on how long I'm doing the character and stuff, but yeah. Normally perhaps stay in it throughout the day film. I like in the morning, warm up and like get into it and then try and stay in it.

• 48:13Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 48:14Speaker 03

And then like at the end of the day, I'll go home and I won't talk in it.

• 48:16Jason Bateman?

Do you ever do it around your kids and your kids are like, Dad, what do you, I don't understand you.

• 48:20Speaker 03

Occasionally I'll be like, cause I sometimes record. Ah. Bam bam bam there.

• 48:26Jason Bateman?

Bam bam bam there. Boo nooo. Mmm. Bam. Hey Will, have you played golf since you've been done with the movie?

• 48:33Will Arnett?

I went to the range yesterday. Boy, I figured something out.

• 48:36Jason Bateman?

  Oh, did you?

• 48:37Will Arnett?

And we have Nick with us here. Check, check. Here we go. He's back.

• 48:41Jason Bateman?

  Nick Holt?

• 48:42Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 48:42Will Arnett?

  There he is.

• 48:44Jason Bateman?

Nick, do you play the golf? Do you play golf at all?

• 48:46Speaker 03

I do play, I do play the golf, not very well. Um.

• 48:49Jason Bateman?

Cause we were, we were talking about golf during the intermission there. Um, so you're no, you're.

• 48:54Speaker 03

Do you all, do you all play?

• 48:55Jason Bateman?

Uh, uh, we do. Sean does not. Sean can drive the hell out of the car.

• 48:58Will Arnett?

  Jason and I play.

• 48:59Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 49:00Will Arnett?

Uh, Sean did come to a golf tournament with us once, but he did not play.

• 49:03Jason Bateman?

Um, you're not good because you don't play that much because you're working all the time, yes?

• 49:09Speaker 03

Yeah, I don't, I'm not consistent enough. Like when I'm on one, it's good.

• 49:14Will Arnett?

Hmm. All right. Looks like we lost them again. Please stand by.

• 49:19Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 49:20Will Arnett?

By the way, you know, there are certain names, right? That have a cachet, that have a thing.

• 49:25Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 49:25Will Arnett?

Nick Holt. Nicholas Hoult sounds like a star name. That's a star name.

• 49:30Jason Bateman?

  Sure it is.

• 49:30Will Arnett?

  You know what I mean?

• 49:31Jason Bateman?

You know, like, let me, let me, can I, can I run one by you that I don't think is it? It, it's just, it's impossible.

• 49:36Will Arnett?

  I'm gonna say my name.

• 49:38Jason Bateman?

  Will Arnett.

• 49:39Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 49:39Jason Bateman?

Is just something that's just, it's sort of like, oh, well, that's fine.

• 49:43Will Arnett?

  I know.

• 49:43Jason Bateman?

That's fine. You know, Sean Hayes. That's kind of boring. It's like, oh, it's kind of foggy. I can't really see through it. Yeah, yeah. It's crazy. It's, you can't make anything out of it.

• 49:52Will Arnett?

Sean Hayes, Sean Hayes sounds like your sister's friend, you know? Who's like a graphic designer.

• 49:57Jason Bateman?

You know who I saw at the mall?

• 49:59Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 50:00Jason Bateman?

  Fucking Sean Hayes.

• 50:01Will Arnett?

Oh, yeah. I remember him from high school. That's it. He sounds like somebody, like your sister's friend from high school. And now you're 50 and you're like, oh yeah, I thought that guy died.

• 50:11Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, sadly, that's true.

• 50:13Sean Hayes?

  There we are.

• 50:13Will Arnett?

  Nick Holt.

• 50:14Jason Bateman?

  Nick Holt?

• 50:15Sean Hayes?

Nick Holt is back. Ah, he's not back.

• 50:18Will Arnett?

  And more frozen than ever.

• 50:19Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 50:21Sean Hayes?

  Well, we should-

• 50:21Will Arnett?

Robbie, is he trying to join back in? No, I just heard from him and I think there's something going on with his laptop.

• 50:28Jason Bateman?

Well, listen, we lost Nicholas Hoult. We have got a real spotty connection there. But you want to know what? A guy that busy, we're thankful to get even-

• 50:36Will Arnett?

We're lucky with the time that we had with him.

• 50:37Jason Bateman?

The amount of time that we had, right?

• 50:39Will Arnett?

  I agree.

• 50:39Jason Bateman?

And this guy is a talent and a charmer.

• 50:43Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 50:43Jason Bateman?

And again, the hair did not disappoint. The jawline did not disappoint.

• 50:48Will Arnett?

  No, no, no.

• 50:48Jason Bateman?

  Good-looking, good-looking guy.

• 50:49Will Arnett?

Good-looking guy, very well-spoken, super talented. He's got it all. He's got the superstar name.

• 50:54Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 50:54Sean Hayes?

Focused, like you said, Jay, picks the right projects with the right people.

• 50:58Jason Bateman?

Yeah, and I'm glad we didn't exhaust him because he's got a lot of talking to do in the coming months. Everyone's gonna go out and see Superman.

• 51:05Will Arnett?

Yeah, we're gonna see Superman. What was the date? Was it July 11th that he said?

• 51:08Sean Hayes?

  July 11th, yeah.

• 51:09Jason Bateman?

Will anyone beat Scotty to the theater?

• 51:12Sean Hayes?

For Superman? No. I'm not even kidding. He's probably already bought his tickets. Not even joking.

• 51:17Jason Bateman?

He brought something up on his phone last night, Willie.

• 51:19Sean Hayes?

  Oh, yeah.

• 51:20Jason Bateman?

And, you know, up over his shoulder, and right there, his screensaver on his iPhone is just the Superman badge. You know, the chest badge, or whatever the hell it is.

• 51:27Sean Hayes?

That's his screensaver. I know, he's a big nerd. He's a big fat nerd. Not fat, but he's nerd.

• 51:32Will Arnett?

  That's a funny, that's a, that's a great, nerd is a great way to put it.

• 51:35Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 51:36Will Arnett?

It's not the word I'd use. You know what I mean? Mine starts with an L. A big L. Remember when people just, remember, because nerds all of a sudden sort of appropriated the word. Losers appropriated the word nerd because they thought like it made them sound better, and they're just losers.

• 51:54Sean Hayes?

Well, I'm gonna write this down and make sure Scotty knows what I feel.

• 51:56Will Arnett?

No, I'm kidding. I love Scotty.

• 51:57Jason Bateman?

Where does, where does dork live in that, in that, in that list? Is that, is that more pejorative?

• 52:02Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, dork is like-

• 52:03Will Arnett?

I'm a loser too. I'm like a hardcore fan who's bummed out about a sports game last night. Like, that doesn't exactly make me a fucking winner.

• 52:10Sean Hayes?

No, but you know what I was gonna say, how good, how good looking Nick, Nick Holt is. And I said to, I said to Will the other day. Back off the mic a little bit. I said, I said, if you're attracted.

• 52:24Will Arnett?

Look at the tee up, look at the, if you're attracted to, uh huh.

• 52:27Sean Hayes?

If you're attracted to both men and women.

• 52:30Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 52:31Sean Hayes?

But neither are attracted to you.

• 52:33Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 52:34Sean Hayes?

  You are by yourself.

• 52:37Will Arnett?

  Oh, nice.

• 52:38Sean Hayes?

  Bye.

• 52:40Will Arnett?

I like that. We'll accept that. Bye.
