• 0:06Mark Normand?

  Hey! You take it.

• 0:08Sam Morril?

  That was terrible.

• 0:09Mark Normand?

  Ah!

• 0:10Sam Morril?

  Just roll with it.

• 0:11Mark Normand?

We're here, we're queer, my legs are freezing.

• 0:14Sam Morril?

  Yeah, it's cold.

• 0:16Mark Normand?

But yeah, good to have you. We got Louis CK, everybody.

• 0:18Speaker 02

  Hey.

• 0:19Mark Normand?

  Let's cookin'.

• 0:20Sam Morril?

Hot new special on Netflix, Louis, uh, you're back on Netflix, man.

• 0:24Speaker 02

I'm back on Netflix, starting today, this morning. I don't know, midnight, I don't know when they put it on.

• 0:29Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 0:29Speaker 02

It was on when I woke up.

• 0:31Sam Morril?

How does it feel like, as opposed to, like, thrown on your website?

• 0:35Speaker 02

Uh, I mean, it's only been a few hours, but it's, uh, it's nice, cause it's a little outside the fence more.

• 0:40Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 0:41Speaker 02

  Folks can wander over.

• 0:43Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 0:44Speaker 02

  You know what I mean?

• 0:44Mark Normand?

  It's global.

• 0:45Speaker 02

And it's all over the world, yeah. So is my website, but it was a closed circuit.

• 0:50Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 0:51Speaker 02

And so, it's nice, people can stumble on it. I know some people's algorithm won't give it to them. But, uh, but, you know.

• 1:00Mark Normand?

That's true. You ever see someone else's algorithm at their house, you're like, what the hell is this shit?

• 1:04Speaker 02

  Yeah, completely different.

• 1:05Mark Normand?

Spanish singing, yeah, it's crazy. Indian movies?

• 1:08Sam Morril?

Yeah, for a while, it was on my dad's Netflix, and I would just stumble, and I'd be like, you and my mom are watching weird shit.

• 1:13Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:14Sam Morril?

It's all just like Korean drama type stuff?

• 1:16Mark Normand?

  Yes!

• 1:17Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:18Sam Morril?

It's funny, Korean, and you said Spanish and Indian?

• 1:21Mark Normand?

My mom goes all British, uh, like, cop show.

• 1:25Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah, those are good.

• 1:26Mark Normand?

Like, British detective shit, she loves-

• 1:27Sam Morril?

Like Happy Valley or something, you ever see that one?

• 1:29Speaker 02

Well, like, what do you call it, uh, fucking, the one that's a town's name, and it's really morose and dark?

• 1:34Mark Normand?

They're all morose and dark and boring. I hate it.

• 1:36Sam Morril?

  Broadchurch, that was one?

• 1:38Mark Normand?

  Broadchurch!

• 1:39Sam Morril?

  That was a good one.

• 1:39Mark Normand?

  Yes!

• 1:40Speaker 02

  I like those.

• 1:41Sam Morril?

  Really good.

• 1:41Mark Normand?

  Ugh.

• 1:42Speaker 02

What's his name, David something Brothers in that?

• 1:44Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:44Speaker 02

He was, then he was a Doctor Who.

• 1:47Mark Normand?

  Oh!

• 1:47Speaker 02

My kids got into Doctor Who, so I watched Doctor Who for a while.

• 1:50Mark Normand?

They love Doctor Who. I've ne- I don't know what Doctor Who is, I've never seen a minute of it.

• 1:54Sam Morril?

  Don't know, yeah, they're different Doctor Who's?

• 1:56Mark Normand?

  Okay.

• 1:56Speaker 02

Yeah, so Doctor Who's a, uh, it's actually not a guy, that's not the person's name, it's the name of the show, he's just called The Doctor. And he's the guy who lives in a telephone booth that's really big inside, and he travels through time.

• 2:09Mark Normand?

  Really?

• 2:10Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 2:11Mark Normand?

  Oh, okay.

• 2:11Speaker 02

  And, uh, and every-

• 2:12Sam Morril?

You could be fucking with us, for sure.

• 2:14Speaker 02

No, it's what it's about, but it's a movie, it was a TV show back in the 50s, it used to be in black and white.

• 2:18Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 2:19Speaker 02

In Britain. And every few years, he dies.

• 2:23Mark Normand?

  Okay.

• 2:24Speaker 02

Because they don't pay the actors very much and then they then he regenerates as a new person. So there's been a lot of people that have played the doctor. And the newest doctor who's evolved been like a new like a new general also. Once in a while, the show dies.

• 2:36Mark Normand?

  Hmm.

• 2:36Speaker 02

And then it comes back with a new group of writers and producers.

• 2:40Mark Normand?

  What?

• 2:40Speaker 02

And a new cluster of of actors. Yeah, so those are some of the doctors.

• 2:44Mark Normand?

Wow, so it's almost like a James Bond thing.

• 2:47Speaker 02

Yeah, so that guy down there, David, what the fuck is his name? David Tennant was a great doctor. And so was who's two fret down from him. The woman's pretty good, too. Peter Capaldi is really good. Matt Smith, I wasn't that into.

• 3:01Mark Normand?

  Okay.

• 3:02Speaker 02

And then if you go go, can you see the first one?

• 3:04Mark Normand?

  Wow, so many.

• 3:06Speaker 02

The first one was in black and well, the first one I saw was the guy. He's holding an orange and red thing.

• 3:13Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 3:14Speaker 02

He was the first one. I remember when I was a kid.

• 3:16Mark Normand?

  Is that Alu Bell?

• 3:17Speaker 02

  Alu Bell.

• 3:18Mark Normand?

  He was the first.

• 3:19Speaker 02

  Alu Bell.

• 3:20Mark Normand?

Look at the iterations. This is crazy.

• 3:22Sam Morril?

Do your kids turn you on to a lot of shows?

• 3:25Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, they like what they watch. I like a lot of what they watch. But this one was, yeah, it was pretty cool. Anyway, how did we end up talking about Doctor Who?

• 3:32Mark Normand?

I don't know, but this is it. I've never gotten up the bottom.

• 3:34Speaker 02

  Broadchurch. Algorithms.

• 3:36Mark Normand?

  Broadchurch, yeah.

• 3:37Speaker 02

  Broadchurch, yes.

• 3:38Mark Normand?

She also loves that Sherlock Holmes.

• 3:41Speaker 02

Yeah, Sherlock Holmes with Ben and the Dumb and the Cumberblow.

• 3:44Mark Normand?

  Yes, yes.

• 3:45Speaker 02

Yes, and Martin Freeman, who I love. From The Office.

• 3:48Mark Normand?

Oh, the blonde guy. He's good.

• 3:50Speaker 02

Yeah, he's great in a lot of stuff.

• 3:51Mark Normand?

Yeah, that was a great Sherlock Holmes rendition.

• 3:55Speaker 02

Yes, it was. It was fucking clever as hell.

• 3:57Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 3:58Speaker 02

  Really well filmed, really taught.

• 3:59Mark Normand?

Mm hmm, because we did one in America called Elementary. And it wasn't as good.

• 4:04Sam Morril?

Yeah, but it was a CBS show.

• 4:05Mark Normand?

That's true. It had that that CSI look, that kind of cloudy beige look I hate.

• 4:11Speaker 02

Exactly what you mean. I hate that, too.

• 4:13Mark Normand?

Yeah, well, we're doing a movie and we're trying to all the movies now look shitty, I think.

• 4:18Sam Morril?

Yeah, they all look too dark, don't you think?

• 4:21Speaker 02

Which movie is like, would you?

• 4:23Mark Normand?

  Like a mainstream movie.

• 4:24Sam Morril?

I feel like every movie is like tinted a little too dark now. I don't know.

• 4:28Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 4:29Speaker 02

Well, the places that put out the images for promo, they're all the same. They do everybody's.

• 4:36Mark Normand?

  Ah.

• 4:37Speaker 02

It's like, there's only a few publicists. So like, remember when Chris got slapped by Will Smith?

• 4:43Sam Morril?

  Oh, yeah, of course.

• 4:44Speaker 02

So there's only, at that elite level of all the people that were in the room, there's only like two publicists. I don't know who they are at this point, but you know that, that everybody has like two of the same.

• 4:54Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 4:55Speaker 02

So they, they all thought really quickly, I think during the commercial break, like, wait a minute, we, we're not sure. They're both black. It's what, you know.

• 5:02Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 5:03Speaker 02

And so all of the stars just tweeted, but you can't say nothing. So all the stars tweeted like, did you see that?

• 5:13Speaker 02

  Like they just.

• 5:13Sam Morril?

  Quick, have no take.

• 5:15Speaker 02

  Just registering surprise.

• 5:17Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 5:18Speaker 02

  Oh, wow.

• 5:19Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 5:20Speaker 02

That happened. They all said, so you know, there's one publicist or maybe two that are like, you gotta just be surprised. Don't, don't have a take.

• 5:26Mark Normand?

  That's hilarious.

• 5:27Speaker 02

This is how we do this. But, but so all these images you see of movies now are sort of samey.

• 5:33Mark Normand?

  Hmm.

• 5:34Speaker 02

Cause that's what's registering is, I think it's probably the thumbnails that are making things look the way they do now.

• 5:41Mark Normand?

And they probably did some focus group where they're like, people respond to this.

• 5:44Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 5:44Sam Morril?

But I don't like when, like for a horror movie, I get it. For a comedy, you don't want a dark looking, you want like a light comedy.

• 5:52Mark Normand?

Yeah, exactly. You want some levity there, some good colors, like a Billy Madison.

• 5:57Sam Morril?

Yes, it was like bright. It was bright.

• 5:59Mark Normand?

  Not a fan?

• 6:00Sam Morril?

  You don't like it?

• 6:00Speaker 02

  Oh, great.

• 6:03Mark Normand?

I'm not saying, I'm just saying it's a, it looked good.

• 6:06Speaker 02

  Terrific.

• 6:09Sam Morril?

You're taking people out this episode, dude. Between, between Matt Smith, not the Sandman.

• 6:14Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 6:15Mark Normand?

No, wait, have you ever actually had a conversation with Chris about that slap?

• 6:18Speaker 02

No, I don't want to talk about that. It's his stories.

• 6:20Mark Normand?

  Ah.

• 6:21Speaker 02

It's his story. It's not my story to tell.

• 6:24Mark Normand?

Hold the cup with two hands.

• 6:25Speaker 02

No, I don't, yeah, I don't know. It's a, yeah, he slapped me. Shouldn't have done that. It was wrong.

• 6:29Mark Normand?

  Agreed.

• 6:30Speaker 02

  It was this punk move.

• 6:33Mark Normand?

  Agreed.

• 6:33Speaker 02

Punk slap. The idea that it was chivalry was really offensive.

• 6:37Mark Normand?

  No.

• 6:38Speaker 02

Because if you are chill, if you're that guy, that British.

• 6:41Mark Normand?

  He's a glove.

• 6:42Speaker 02

You say, well, you say, put your hands up.

• 6:45Mark Normand?

  Oh.

• 6:45Speaker 02

You say, you're in a fight now.

• 6:47Mark Normand?

  A duel.

• 6:48Speaker 02

You don't walk up like this and.

• 6:49Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 6:50Speaker 02

And you're twice as big as the guy.

• 6:52Mark Normand?

  Not about twice.

• 6:53Speaker 02

  Well.

• 6:53Sam Morril?

  He's big, dude.

• 6:54Mark Normand?

I think we could do the, we could do the heights.

• 6:57Speaker 02

Chris is very, well, heights is one thing.

• 6:59Mark Normand?

  Oh, okay. Okay.

• 7:00Speaker 02

I mean, you're taller than me.

• 7:02Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 7:02Speaker 02

But at my age, still, I could kick the shit out of.

• 7:04Sam Morril?

Dude, I don't think he could.

• 7:07Mark Normand?

  Let's do it right now.

• 7:08Sam Morril?

I like your bit, though, about how, how old is 58?

• 7:11Speaker 02

  Uh huh.

• 7:12Sam Morril?

And you're like, it's old enough that I could, you're talking to the 11 year old, I could kick your ass, but I, it would hurt me too.

• 7:16Speaker 02

  I'd get hurt too.

• 7:17Sam Morril?

Yeah, yeah, that's a great line.

• 7:18Speaker 02

I'd get hurt too. Wouldn't be a clean fuck up.

• 7:21Mark Normand?

All right, he's 5'10". I bet, I'm gonna go Will Smith 6'2", if I had to guess.

• 7:26Sam Morril?

  He's, he's got 100 pounds on him.

• 7:27Speaker 02

He played Muhammad Ali in a movie.

• 7:29Mark Normand?

  So he's shaky?

• 7:30Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 7:31Mark Normand?

  All right.

• 7:33Speaker 02

  Well, he's dead now.

• 7:34Mark Normand?

Oh, good point. Good point, 6'2", nailed it.

• 7:39Speaker 02

  Nice.

• 7:39Sam Morril?

That was not a good movie. Did you see that?

• 7:41Mark Normand?

  No.

• 7:41Speaker 02

Oh, Ali. Well, I like Michael Mann.

• 7:44Mark Normand?

  I love Michael Mann.

• 7:45Sam Morril?

He's, he's like one of my favorites ever, but I just don't like them.

• 7:47Speaker 02

  Did you ever see Manhunter?

• 7:48Sam Morril?

  Dude, it's the best.

• 7:49Speaker 02

  So fucking good.

• 7:50Sam Morril?

Diving through the fucking glass window is the coolest.

• 7:53Speaker 02

With fucking, uh, uh, my buddy, Tom Noonan is the bad.

• 7:55Sam Morril?

  He's amazing.

• 7:57Speaker 02

  Died recently.

• 7:57Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 7:58Speaker 02

  Great, great.

• 7:59Mark Normand?

I mean, Thief, and he, I think they're redoing, um.

• 8:01Speaker 02

  Thief is incredible.

• 8:03Sam Morril?

Thief is a gorgeous looking movie.

• 8:04Speaker 02

  It's beautiful.

• 8:05Sam Morril?

That's one of the most ama- like, The Wet Streets and The Blue and this.

• 8:09Speaker 02

  Yes, yeah.

• 8:10Sam Morril?

That scene in The Diner too, when he just talks about like having, needing nothing to lose, like, that is like, that could be any other career.

• 8:16Speaker 02

  It's incre-

• 8:16Sam Morril?

That could be like comedy or whatever, you know?

• 8:19Speaker 02

Oh, you mean the way he describes.

• 8:20Sam Morril?

  Prison.

• 8:21Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 8:21Sam Morril?

And he's like, I needed to have nothing to lose to be great. And you're like, oh, that's fucking cool.

• 8:26Speaker 02

It is, it is a little, little thing about life.

• 8:29Mark Normand?

They don't make movies like that anymore.

• 8:30Speaker 02

  And Willie Nelson.

• 8:32Sam Morril?

Ah, he was so cool, man.

• 8:33Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah. Look at him.

• 8:35Speaker 02

Get me out of here, brother.

• 8:37Sam Morril?

James Caan is so cool in that movie.

• 8:39Speaker 02

It's, that movie is astonishingly good. And it's violent as fuck.

• 8:44Mark Normand?

  Sure.

• 8:45Sam Morril?

Oh my god, even some of the deaths.

• 8:47Speaker 02

Like, the guy who plays the main bad guy.

• 8:49Sam Morril?

  So good.

• 8:50Speaker 02

The, the thing is, they used to have off-type guys like that. Like, uh.

• 8:56Mark Normand?

  What do you mean?

• 8:56Speaker 02

The, in other words, you didn't get a guy like this, I'm the, I'm the mob guy. It's this sort of fat Irishman.

• 9:03Mark Normand?

  Oh.

• 9:04Speaker 02

  Looks like Santa Claus.

• 9:05Sam Morril?

  Yeah, he looks sweet.

• 9:06Speaker 02

But he's, he's a sweet-looking guy, but he is, he puts him in a, in a.

• 9:10Mark Normand?

  Oh, that guy, yes.

• 9:12Speaker 02

He puts James Belushi in a vat of acid and melts his body.

• 9:16Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 9:17Speaker 02

But he's like, nice about it. He's like, well, I'm gonna do this now.

• 9:20Sam Morril?

  I'm sorry, yeah.

• 9:20Speaker 02

You should not have done that.

• 9:21Sam Morril?

Oh my god, the scene when he tries to adopt a kid too, and they won't let him. And he's like, I'll take a black one. I'll take, I'll take.

• 9:27Speaker 02

I'll even take a black one.

• 9:29Mark Normand?

  Ah, that's a different time.

• 9:31Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 9:31Sam Morril?

That movie, you know, it's also so underrated, The Insider, Michael Mann, great movie.

• 9:37Speaker 02

  Insider's great.

• 9:38Sam Morril?

  Amazing movie.

• 9:38Mark Normand?

  Russell Crowe?

• 9:39Sam Morril?

  Oh, so good.

• 9:40Mark Normand?

  Tobacco.

• 9:40Speaker 02

Al Pacino, but also just the backdrop of Al Pacino playing a sixty minutes producer.

• 9:46Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 9:47Speaker 02

  Uh, great movie.

• 9:48Sam Morril?

  Classic.

• 9:50Speaker 02

Also, inside, who's the one that's kind of similar feeling, kind of dark and gritty? With the word inside in it, Spike Lee.

• 9:58Sam Morril?

  Inside Man.

• 9:59Mark Normand?

  Inside Man.

• 10:00Speaker 02

  Great fucking.

• 10:00Sam Morril?

  Cool movie.

• 10:01Mark Normand?

Great movie. That's his best movie, I think.

• 10:03Sam Morril?

  Really?

• 10:04Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 10:04Speaker 02

Spike is, I mean, Spike gets in, gets a lot of ideas of what he wants to do in life. But he's a great fucking director.

• 10:11Sam Morril?

  Oh, yeah.

• 10:11Speaker 02

Like, he's a great, like, if I, if you took any movie and you, a great script, just a tight script, and you just hired Spike. This movie is so fucking good.

• 10:21Mark Normand?

  So good.

• 10:21Speaker 02

  Entertaining.

• 10:22Mark Normand?

Clive Owen was great in that.

• 10:23Speaker 02

Jodie Foster, fucking Christopher Plummer, one of his best roles in a long career. Uh, William Defoe's great in it.

• 10:31Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 10:32Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 10:32Mark Normand?

  Huge hog.

• 10:34Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 10:34Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 10:34Mark Normand?

No, they have to, they have to CGI sometimes.

• 10:37Sam Morril?

  No, that's not true.

• 10:38Speaker 02

  It's too big.

• 10:38Sam Morril?

  They did a replacement.

• 10:39Mark Normand?

  Pull it up.

• 10:39Sam Morril?

  Eyes me.

• 10:40Speaker 02

  That's you.

• 10:42Sam Morril?

Are you setting me up for that one?

• 10:43Mark Normand?

Oh shit, I forgot about the bit, yeah.

• 10:45Sam Morril?

Dude, uh, yeah. That, that movie's, that's a fun one. I, I love Twenty Fifth Hour too. I think that's a really cool one.

• 10:51Speaker 02

  I don't think I saw it.

• 10:52Mark Normand?

  Oh yeah, Ed Norton.

• 10:53Sam Morril?

  I liked, uh.

• 10:53Mark Normand?

  Patrice is in that.

• 10:55Speaker 02

  Mo Betta Blues I liked.

• 10:56Sam Morril?

Yeah, I never saw that one.

• 10:59Mark Normand?

Malcolm X, Do the Right Thing?

• 11:01Speaker 02

  Malcolm X is great.

• 11:02Sam Morril?

  Long.

• 11:02Speaker 02

Thing I didn't love. Uh, the first one, uh, She's Gotta Have It's great. Um, what's the one, uh, fucking Jungle Fevers, really?

• 11:10Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 11:12Sam Morril?

Didn't see it, gotta see it.

• 11:13Mark Normand?

They did Poetic Justice, which I jerked off to once.

• 11:16Sam Morril?

  Hmm, nice.

• 11:17Mark Normand?

Oh, oh, Girl Six was the one I jerked off to, cause she was a call girl.

• 11:21Speaker 02

  He got game.

• 11:21Sam Morril?

  I love He Got Game.

• 11:22Speaker 02

It's great, and, uh, Get, uh, Get on the Bus is great. Clockers is fucking good.

• 11:28Mark Normand?

  Oh, I've never seen that.

• 11:30Speaker 02

  Oh, you gotta see Clockers.

• 11:31Mark Normand?

  Okay.

• 11:32Speaker 02

  So good. John Turturro's, uh.

• 11:34Mark Normand?

  Oh, wow.

• 11:35Speaker 02

  Um, fucking, uh, that guy.

• 11:39Sam Morril?

Dude, you know what I watched?

• 11:40Speaker 02

  Harvey Keitel.

• 11:40Sam Morril?

You know what else she ever did that I've never seen? Nineties movie, uh, Exotica. Awesome.

• 11:46Mark Normand?

  I don't know.

• 11:46Sam Morril?

  Have you heard of this?

• 11:47Speaker 02

  No.

• 11:48Sam Morril?

This movie, yeah, right here. Uh, Definite Rec.

• 11:51Mark Normand?

  Okay.

• 11:52Sam Morril?

  Uh.

• 11:53Speaker 02

  I don't know this.

• 11:54Mark Normand?

  I've never heard of it.

• 11:55Sam Morril?

It's really, it's like, kind of a slow burn. You don't know what's happening. Yeah, it's in a strip club. But it's like, all these weird people and you don't know how they really know each other, connect, and it kinda slowly comes together. It's, it's really cool.

• 12:09Mark Normand?

  Okay.

• 12:10Sam Morril?

  Adam Agoyan?

• 12:12Speaker 02

Oh, Adam Agoyan. He made a movie about a bus full of kids going through the ice.

• 12:18Sam Morril?

Yeah. No, you're right though. Yeah, I didn't see that.

• 12:21Speaker 02

It was the second movie like that.

• 12:23Mark Normand?

  Really?

• 12:23Speaker 02

  Cause Dennis Hopper made one.

• 12:25Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 12:26Speaker 02

  Called Out of the Blue.

• 12:26Mark Normand?

  He's a wild dude.

• 12:27Speaker 02

  Yeah. Also dead.

• 12:29Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 12:30Mark Normand?

  He died?

• 12:31Speaker 02

  Sure did.

• 12:32Sam Morril?

  Such a good bad guy.

• 12:33Mark Normand?

  Hot shot. Pop quiz asshole.

• 12:35Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 12:36Mark Normand?

You know who's good with the off type casting is Travolta, um, Quentin Tarantino. He'll cast any like Travolta as a hitman guy is kinda crazy, but it worked.

• 12:48Speaker 02

  It really did.

• 12:49Mark Normand?

He has a lot of those where you're like, that guy? Really?

• 12:52Speaker 02

  He is great vision.

• 12:53Sam Morril?

When you had Louis, was that one of the most fun things is you're like, I'm just gonna put someone like I get to cast Charles Grodin.

• 12:59Speaker 02

Yeah, once we started being able to get people, it was really cool. I mean, I liked it before too, when we were just, cause New York has a huge like theater community. And people that are just laying around who have huge skill. And, um, but yeah, when we could start going like, like Michael Rappaport was one of my favorite.

• 13:16Mark Normand?

  Oh, really?

• 13:17Speaker 02

Out of, yeah, as the cop. Uh, he was fucking great. And David Lynch, I mean, you know.

• 13:24Mark Normand?

  That was a great.

• 13:24Sam Morril?

That was a great three-episode arc.

• 13:26Speaker 02

And then at the same time, fucking Doug Stanhope out of the, you know.

• 13:29Mark Normand?

  The Village Lantern.

• 13:31Speaker 02

  Yeah, and he was great.

• 13:32Sam Morril?

That might've been my favorite guest performance of the whole show.

• 13:35Mark Normand?

  Stanhope.

• 13:36Sam Morril?

  Stanhope was so good, dude.

• 13:37Mark Normand?

  Going to the open mic?

• 13:38Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 13:39Sam Morril?

  With fighting with Greg Rogel?

• 13:41Speaker 02

Yes. Yeah. That was great, right?

• 13:43Sam Morril?

  That was awesome.

• 13:44Mark Normand?

  That was a documentary.

• 13:45Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 13:46Mark Normand?

What about the, uh, Robin Williams?

• 13:48Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 13:49Mark Normand?

That was a great one with the funeral.

• 13:51Sam Morril?

  And Big J.

• 13:52Speaker 02

That was really something. Yes, Big J was in the show.

• 13:55Sam Morril?

I've messaged you when I'm like rewatched it before. I've messaged you when I was rewatching Louis, like.

• 13:59Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 13:59Sam Morril?

I just miss, there's aren't that many New York shows like that anymore. It like captured a kind of New York that.

• 14:06Mark Normand?

  We, that isn't often captured.

• 14:08Speaker 02

Yeah, we were shooting on the streets pretty barely, like without much support, you know, so we got to really see the city the way it felt then and.

• 14:15Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 14:15Speaker 02

  Uh.

• 14:16Sam Morril?

  Bobby Kelly.

• 14:17Mark Normand?

  Yikes.

• 14:18Speaker 02

Bobby was great, like my, my brother.

• 14:20Sam Morril?

Oh, Pamela Adlon, great in the show.

• 14:21Speaker 02

  Great in the show.

• 14:22Mark Normand?

I love that episode where you're, you're trying to sleep in the morning, you're trying to sleep in and there's a bunch of garbage happening, the garbage men are being too loud and then eventually they come in and then they're on the bed. That is quality comedy.

• 14:34Sam Morril?

Well, you just keep, you keep escalating. The other one I love is when you're, you missed the flight and the woman keeps explaining why you missed, you're like, oh, what happened in the plane? And you're not allowed to be upset when you find out where she said. Uh, uh, everyone died except for one baby.

• 14:49Speaker 02

  Except for one baby.

• 14:49Sam Morril?

It's just like, oh, that's, yeah, that, that's like, you, you tapped into shit that we feel all the time. As New Yorkers and road comics.

• 14:58Speaker 02

Oh, thanks, man. Yeah, that was, that was pure fun.

• 15:01Mark Normand?

Apparently after that, people said, I want the Louis deal. That was the thing in TV.

• 15:05Sam Morril?

And it died in a year. No one's getting, no one's getting that.

• 15:09Speaker 02

I had a lot of training as a filmmaker, so I was just, you know, I had directed a lot, so I knew how to do it. That was what it all rested on. I didn't need a lot of supervision and stuff because I actually knew how to. Some guys, when they have their first show, they, they actually have to learn how to do it, so they need help.

• 15:26Mark Normand?

Well, it was cool. I, I remember being an open mic'er and you would tweet, hey, I'm gonna be at the Comedy Cellar for free soda.

• 15:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 15:32Mark Normand?

And you give a free Coke, and I was broke, and I would go drink Cokes, and you would do a set at the Cellar with the Steadicam guy up your ass. On the stage and everything, and that was all, I had to leave work for that.

• 15:42Speaker 02

It's funny because I, those shows were always kinda shitty.

• 15:46Mark Normand?

  Yeah, they were tough.

• 15:47Speaker 02

The crowds were too, like, ooh, we're at a place. It wasn't like an audience. You need an audience to feel like they own the show, like, you know what I mean? It rests with them. And this tweeted, these crowds, I used to just tweet, come to the Cellar and they'd come.

• 16:03Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 16:03Speaker 02

And they'd sort of stiffly stare at me. So I started to go, I stopped doing that, and I would just go to the Cellar with the Steadicam guy.

• 16:11Sam Morril?

  Ah, makes more sense.

• 16:12Speaker 02

Jump on stage, and he'd kinda elbow his way in.

• 16:15Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 16:16Speaker 02

And I would just, you know, we'd just take over and do it once in a while.

• 16:19Mark Normand?

Was he like a German guy? That guy with the Steadicam?

• 16:22Speaker 02

  I don't remember that.

• 16:23Mark Normand?

Oh, okay, I thought he, he was a friend of yours.

• 16:25Speaker 02

No, it was an Asian guy who I worked with a lot back then.

• 16:29Mark Normand?

Oh, I just remember a guy with a thick, crazy accent.

• 16:31Speaker 02

  Gosh.

• 16:32Mark Normand?

He was some kind of DP or something on the show, and he would always yell stuff at you. Ah.

• 16:39Speaker 02

  Sorry.

• 16:39Mark Normand?

That's all right. And it stuck that, that stuck into my brain like, wow, this guy is like a real artist. He's foreign.

• 16:45Speaker 02

  Don't remember a German guy.

• 16:47Mark Normand?

  No, it's all right.

• 16:47Sam Morril?

I feel like that's what took The Cellar, like, from doing two shows a night or whatever to now it's four, soon to be five rooms, but I feel like that show was like, became a tourist attraction.

• 16:58Speaker 02

Yeah, we brought a lot of business there. I mean, it's also has its own momentum.

• 17:02Mark Normand?

  Sure.

• 17:02Sam Morril?

  Totally.

• 17:03Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 17:03Sam Morril?

And comedy definitely took off, you know, at a certain point, but yeah, I mean, that was, I mean, we were at The Cellar and there were two shows a night and now it's, what, like 12 or something?

• 17:12Mark Normand?

  Totally.

• 17:12Speaker 02

  It's insane.

• 17:13Sam Morril?

  It's crazy.

• 17:14Speaker 02

There is places in other countries that got into stand-up because of my show, not even, but because it was about stand-ups. Like, I was just in Istanbul and I did a show there and a guy told me that, a comedian there told me that it was the series that got people into stand-up. Because it was like the life of stand-up comedy. Like, that's what, you watch, if you watch stand-up and you don't do it, it feels like this other thing, like, who can do that? But the shows showed, you know, comedy as a first-person experience. So, um, so people got into that. They, that's what made them want to do it, I guess, in Turkey, anyway.

• 17:50Mark Normand?

  Wow, that's crazy.

• 17:50Sam Morril?

  That's crazy, yeah.

• 17:52Mark Normand?

That was the last show about a stand-up?

• 17:54Sam Morril?

  No, Crashing was after that.

• 17:55Mark Normand?

Oh, Crashing. Cause I, we, every-

• 17:57Speaker 02

  Also at The Cellar, so-

• 17:59Mark Normand?

  Yeah. Was that awkward?

• 18:01Speaker 02

  Huh?

• 18:01Mark Normand?

  Was that awkward?

• 18:02Speaker 02

  I don't know, I didn't watch it.

• 18:04Mark Normand?

Some people get weird about that, you know? Chappelle's always like, Key and Peele stole my show.

• 18:07Speaker 02

  I don't know.

• 18:08Mark Normand?

And you're like, ah, it's just, it's just another show.

• 18:10Speaker 02

  Everybody's biting, everybody doesn't matter.

• 18:12Mark Normand?

  Alright.

• 18:12Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 18:13Sam Morril?

Yeah, who, who are your biggest influences, like, as a director?

• 18:16Speaker 02

Uh, I love Woody, uh, Scorsese, um, then like some weird people like Lena Vermmuler, she's an Italian director. She made great films.

• 18:27Sam Morril?

Pull her up, don't know her.

• 18:29Speaker 02

Yeah, so she made a movie called, uh-

• 18:33Speaker 02

Um, uh, Swept Away, which has been remade a couple of times. It's about, uh, a fancy yacht and it hits the rocks. And the la- the snottiest lady in the gold bikini, like a millionaire lady. And the sluggish dude that works on the yacht.

• 18:52Mark Normand?

  Uh huh.

• 18:52Speaker 02

Are end up together on an island. And it turns, you know, so he ends up ruling the.

• 19:00Speaker 02

  Cause without him, she's dead.

• 19:02Mark Normand?

  Oh.

• 19:03Speaker 02

So it's just this turning upside down of.

• 19:06Sam Morril?

Kind of like Triangle of Sadness.

• 19:07Speaker 02

Yeah, like that, but yeah, this, this one is, it's also hilarious, but also he made one called Seven. Um, Beauties, uh, which I think is the next one over on your list there. It's right next to Swept Away. There you go.

• 19:20Mark Normand?

  There you go.

• 19:21Speaker 02

Okay. So this one is about an Italian pimp.

• 19:25Mark Normand?

  Ooh.

• 19:26Speaker 02

And he's a real just ladies man scumbag. And then it's World War Two and he turns out he's Jewish. So now he's in a concentration camp.

• 19:35Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 19:36Speaker 02

And he's dying in the concentration camp. He's like, I can't, he has, he has no courage. He's no, he has no strength as a person.

• 19:43Mark Normand?

  Uh huh.

• 19:44Speaker 02

And the concentration camp commandant of his barracks is a big fat German lady. And he's like, I gotta, I gotta try to fuck her like it's the only skill I have.

• 19:55Mark Normand?

  So he. What a premise.

• 19:56Speaker 02

Yes. So he, yeah, there she is. So he seduces her so that he can survive.

• 20:02Mark Normand?

  Whoa. What a.

• 20:04Speaker 02

I mean, who else is making that movie?

• 20:06Mark Normand?

  Exactly. That's gold.

• 20:07Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 20:08Sam Morril?

This guy knowing women saved his life.

• 20:10Mark Normand?

  I guess so.

• 20:11Speaker 02

  That's right.

• 20:12Sam Morril?

  Damn.

• 20:12Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 20:13Speaker 02

That was Lena Vermauler. She was a incredible filmmaker.

• 20:18Mark Normand?

Did she, she didn't write them too, huh?

• 20:19Speaker 02

  I think she might've.

• 20:20Mark Normand?

  Oh, that's even cooler.

• 20:21Speaker 02

Yeah. She's a great filmmaker. I don't know if she wrote, uh, her movies.

• 20:26Mark Normand?

Movies are so expensive now. If you pitch that people go, this is never going to sell. Everybody's gonna hate me. So you never get to see that movie anymore.

• 20:33Sam Morril?

Yeah, but I think there's gonna be a big resurgence now with like indie movies and stuff like that. I think.

• 20:38Speaker 02

I think so too. People are, I don't know. There's always somewhere that people are. Having cinema.

• 20:44Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 20:45Speaker 02

  You know?

• 20:45Mark Normand?

Do you still go to the theater a lot or no?

• 20:47Speaker 02

I haven't seen a movie in the theater in a while. Last few I saw, I saw the uh, the Spanish version of, it's called uh, Society of the Snow. And it's about the plane that went down.

• 20:58Mark Normand?

  I saw that.

• 20:58Speaker 02

And they all ate each other.

• 21:00Mark Normand?

  Pretty good.

• 21:00Speaker 02

So they made one here a long time ago with.

• 21:03Mark Normand?

  Alive?

• 21:03Speaker 02

  Ethan Hawke.

• 21:04Mark Normand?

  No.

• 21:05Speaker 02

I don't remember who's, what that one's called. Ethan Hawke and Josh Hamilton and uh,

• 21:13Speaker 02

it's about the plane going down and they all eat each other.

• 21:18Mark Normand?

  Hmm.

• 21:18Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, Alive. You got it.

• 21:20Mark Normand?

Oh, I got it. Okay. That's old.

• 21:22Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 21:23Mark Normand?

  That was a great movie.

• 21:24Speaker 02

Fucking good. But the one that's in Spanish made by the actual, basically the people who experienced it. It's phenomenal. I mean, it's made by the country. It's like in Paraguay or something.

• 21:34Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 21:35Speaker 02

God, that's good. I, most great cinema, especially visually, is Spanish speaking for some reason. A lot of movies I've seen recently. I don't know, but they're, because part of it is the de- democratization or whatever you want to call it, of the simplicity of phone, not just phones, but like cameras. You can, you can get a really great camera now for very cheap. And um, so I think countries in South America are making beautiful uh, movies now.

• 22:03Mark Normand?

  What's the uh?

• 22:04Speaker 02

I've seen a few of them.

• 22:05Mark Normand?

The Gravity Guy. I think he's Hispanic.

• 22:08Speaker 02

Uh, uh, uh, uh, Cuaron. He's my buddy. Yeah.

• 22:11Mark Normand?

  Is that it?

• 22:12Speaker 02

Cuaron is uh, um, Alfonso Cuaron. He, he is Mexican.

• 22:17Mark Normand?

  Okay.

• 22:18Speaker 02

And uh, his great movie, it's one of my favorite movies of all time, is Children of Men.

• 22:23Mark Normand?

  Oh, I love that movie.

• 22:25Sam Morril?

  Great movie.

• 22:26Speaker 02

  Roma. Great movie.

• 22:28Mark Normand?

  Great movie.

• 22:28Sam Morril?

Yeah, that, yeah, just like, a goo- that last twenty minutes or so.

• 22:33Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 22:33Speaker 02

Unbelievable. I don't know how you, how you do it. I don't know how he did it.

• 22:36Mark Normand?

I know. It's so much handheld and then, and running with the camera.

• 22:40Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 22:40Mark Normand?

  Great flick.

• 22:41Speaker 02

Yeah. So, a lot of Latino movies are good right now.

• 22:45Mark Normand?

Huh. What about, where you at on Korean? I think they're doing some good stuff.

• 22:49Speaker 02

  They won the, uh, Parasite?

• 22:51Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 22:51Sam Morril?

That was, you didn't like it?

• 22:52Mark Normand?

  You didn't like Parasite?

• 22:53Sam Morril?

You didn't like Pa- Parasite or Billy Madison? What the hell?

• 22:56Speaker 02

Making, what's, yeah, those, it's as good as Billy Madison.

• 23:02Speaker 02

I don't know. I didn't get. It felt not meta, but it just felt like there was a conceit to the way people acted in the movie that I was like, I'm not picking up on it. I thought there was great filmmaking in it. It was very beautiful. He made a movie that's like a crazy kinda, there's a lizard eating people on the streets in Korea or something.

• 23:23Mark Normand?

  Oh.

• 23:23Speaker 02

  And.

• 23:25Mark Normand?

  The Host?

• 23:26Speaker 02

Maybe. It was really fucking great. I mean, I think the guy's a genius filmmaker.

• 23:33Sam Morril?

He made a movie called Memories of Murder. Did you see that?

• 23:36Mark Normand?

  Right, right.

• 23:37Sam Morril?

Huh? Do you see Memories of Murder?

• 23:39Speaker 02

  Don't know that one.

• 23:39Sam Morril?

That's the same director. It's really cool.

• 23:42Speaker 02

  Don't know that one.

• 23:42Sam Morril?

  Really, really weird crime movie.

• 23:45Mark Normand?

His all his movies have kind of a message. He did that Okja and it's all about how we shouldn't be eating meat.

• 23:50Speaker 02

  Uh huh.

• 23:50Mark Normand?

And then Parasites about the class system, blah, blah, blah.

• 23:53Sam Morril?

Don't let crazy people live in your apartment.

• 23:56Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 23:56Sam Morril?

  It's a good lesson.

• 23:57Speaker 02

There's a Japanese filmmaker and it doesn't matter that this, that doesn't, that's not connected to him just cause.

• 24:03Mark Normand?

  Ah, it's Asia.

• 24:04Speaker 02

  Same area.

• 24:06Speaker 02

But he's, I watched a lot of Turner classic movies and he's, uh. He made a bunch of movies. There's nothing like these movies. Fuck. Uh, Early Spring is one of them, I think it's called. Japanese Early Spring. Try that, something like that.

• 24:24Mark Normand?

  There we go.

• 24:26Speaker 02

Yeah, what's his name, the director?

• 24:31Mark Normand?

Oh man, we got a busy weekend. Yes, sir, Juyo Zou.

• 24:36Speaker 02

  Okay, that guy is incredible.

• 24:39Mark Normand?

  Okay.

• 24:39Sam Morril?

  Alright.

• 24:40Speaker 02

  That guy is incredible.

• 24:41Sam Morril?

You gotta, you have to bookmark some of these.

• 24:43Speaker 02

So he made this one movie.

• 24:45Mark Normand?

  1903?

• 24:46Speaker 02

So it's about a guy, well, his movies were made in post-war Japan.

• 24:51Mark Normand?

  Got it.

• 24:52Speaker 02

I mean, think of that. Post-war, like, we went from the war to like, here we go.

• 24:58Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 24:58Speaker 02

  And Japan's like, woof.

• 25:00Sam Morril?

We're gonna need a minute. Yeah.

• 25:02Speaker 02

  Like, this is fucking tough.

• 25:04Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 25:04Speaker 02

So they became very muted. You can see a sort of. Well, anyway, this movie is about a professor, college professor, who lives with his daughter. His daughter never marries. Marrying and being in a family is a big thing in the culture at the time. And she loves living with her dad and she's just a sweet girl who doesn't really want to get married. And he's worried because he's gonna die and she's gonna be alone.

• 25:28Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 25:28Speaker 02

So he pretends that he found a wife, that he's good, because he's a widow. And she was raised from, only by him, is, her mother died when she was just a kid. So he says, I'm marrying this lady down the street.

• 25:42Sam Morril?

  Uh huh.

• 25:42Speaker 02

So you have to go. And so she's sad, but she sort of finds, opens up to finding somebody and she finds a guy. And the main character, it's a really sad story, but he's really happy-go-lucky. Like, she's like, when she leaves to go to live with her husband, she says, I'm so grateful to you for giving me the best childhood anybody, and she's crying, and he goes, oh, yeah, yeah, that's cool. Like, the whole movie, he's like, yeah, and people are like, are you sad your daughter's leaving? And he's like, nah, it's okay, it makes sense. And he's just really, you know, happy. And then the whole movie is a setup for when she leaves. And he goes home to the empty house.

• 26:23Sam Morril?

  Whoa.

• 26:24Speaker 02

And he gets an apple. And there's this incredible scene where he's peeling the apple, and you hear the sound of the knife going through the apple. And he looks at the apple with no skin on it, and he just goes like this.

• 26:37Sam Morril?

  Hmm.

• 26:37Speaker 02

  And it's credits.

• 26:39Sam Morril?

  Damn.

• 26:39Speaker 02

It's just, it's just his head going. And you just fucking die.

• 26:45Sam Morril?

Those are my favorite movies, when the credits hit and you're just like, fuck.

• 26:48Speaker 02

  Yeah, just that little move.

• 26:50Sam Morril?

Yeah. We talk about All That Jazz all the time on this, when the credits roll, and when the credits hit, and you're just like, fuck.

• 26:56Speaker 02

Where, where is that moment for you, for All That Jazz?

• 26:59Sam Morril?

I mean, after that whole number, you just, and they just zip the bag on him.

• 27:03Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 27:03Sam Morril?

  And you just go, fuck.

• 27:05Mark Normand?

That movie's so well done. The opening of that movie is unbelievable. With popping the pills.

• 27:09Speaker 02

Yes. The, All That Jazz is a masterpiece.

• 27:12Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 27:13Speaker 02

It's a big, juicy, gorgeous masterpiece of a movie.

• 27:16Mark Normand?

  Yeah, sweaty and it's sexy.

• 27:18Sam Morril?

Also another round, I feel like the ending of that movie too.

• 27:21Mark Normand?

  Oh, that's another great ending.

• 27:23Sam Morril?

You ever see that one? Oh, Danish movie, Mads Mikkelsen?

• 27:25Speaker 02

Oh, sure. Now I know that one. What? So what's the moment in that?

• 27:29Sam Morril?

Well, just where you don't know what happens to him and you're just like, yeah.

• 27:32Speaker 02

  That's it.

• 27:32Sam Morril?

And you don't, but just it hits. I love an ambiguous ending, but you're just like, oh shit.

• 27:37Speaker 02

So back to him in a second, but there's another movie that has that moment and it's, I think it's called Howard's End. It's a.

• 27:43Mark Normand?

Oh, yeah. I remember that one.

• 27:45Speaker 02

  Fucking, uh.

• 27:47Mark Normand?

  Nope, maybe it doesn't.

• 27:48Speaker 02

No. Yeah. No, no, no. It's different. It's Anthony Hopkins and.

• 27:53Mark Normand?

  That's him.

• 27:53Sam Morril?

  That's him.

• 27:54Speaker 02

Yes, but it's what's her name? Uh, oh yeah. So maybe it is this one. So it's a, a butler and no, it's different. It's a different movie. Howard's End is different, but it's another Merchant Ivory that they're both in, him and Emma. What the fuck is?

• 28:09Sam Morril?

He's in two of the same movie?

• 28:10Speaker 02

Yeah, they're in, they're dressed in the same kind of clothes.

• 28:13Mark Normand?

  What?

• 28:13Speaker 02

Period movies. Uh, Remains of the Day.

• 28:18Mark Normand?

  Thank you.

• 28:19Speaker 02

He's the butler and she's the housekeeper.

• 28:22Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 28:22Speaker 02

Of a great house, right? And it's this long story of, and his father was the butler.

• 28:30Mark Normand?

  Okay.

• 28:30Speaker 02

Replaces him. But anyway, he's deeply in love with her and she kinda, she's waiting for him because it's English. To make a move and he's just, every time they're going away for like the holidays, she's like, where are you going? And he's like, I'll just be going to the countryside. And she's like, I'm not going anywhere. And he's like, Well, I'll see you later. And year after year, then they get gray and they're both old and like house closes. So it's over. And he sees her to the train. And she's on the train and, and, and he, uh, she gives him her hand just to say goodbye, just to shake hands. And there's this close up of her hand and he just presses it with his thumb just a little.

• 29:14Speaker 02

And as the train takes off, she's like, oh my God, he loved me the whole fucking time. And he's just like, he couldn't. It's like a forty year. I can't say I love him.

• 29:24Mark Normand?

  Damn, what a nut.

• 29:25Speaker 02

  That moment.

• 29:26Sam Morril?

It's like the ending of the age of innocence when Daniel Day Lewis won't go upstairs.

• 29:31Speaker 02

  Right. Yeah.

• 29:32Sam Morril?

It's like that, that repressed age where just like a touch, you're just like, oh my God.

• 29:36Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 29:37Sam Morril?

It's crazy to think where we went with like porn and stuff now.

• 29:40Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 29:41Sam Morril?

Back then, it's like, you're like, he touched my hand.

• 29:44Mark Normand?

  It's anal helicopter.

• 29:46Sam Morril?

Now it's eight cocks at once.

• 29:49Sam Morril?

With jizz all over it. Damn.

• 29:51Mark Normand?

  The makeup's running.

• 29:52Sam Morril?

• 31:01Speaker 02

Well, like Don't Look Now or Don't Look Now, I think, Donald Sutherland.

• 31:07Mark Normand?

  I don't know, Don't Look Now.

• 31:08Speaker 02

Oh, that's a chilling. Out of all of these, I beseech you to watch this.

• 31:14Sam Morril?

  Okay.

• 31:14Mark Normand?

  Oh, really?

• 31:15Speaker 02

Deeply upsetting movie and it's all about the last like three seconds. It's just a huge setup to the most upsetting three seconds of cinema.

• 31:27Mark Normand?

  Oh, boy.

• 31:27Sam Morril?

  Damn.

• 31:28Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 31:28Mark Normand?

Have you heard about this new movie that's banned now? That's number one on Apple?

• 31:32Sam Morril?

  What is it?

• 31:33Mark Normand?

  It's about a guy, I think he's in Germany.

• 31:35Sam Morril?

Oh, is this the Armie Hammer?

• 31:36Mark Normand?

The Armie Hammer movie. It's already banned everywhere because he's going around killing migrants.

• 31:41Sam Morril?

It's like Death, it's like Death Wish type movie.

• 31:43Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 31:43Speaker 02

Oh, I just watched Death Wish last night.

• 31:46Mark Normand?

  Really?

• 31:46Sam Morril?

  I just watched it.

• 31:47Speaker 02

I watched it and I watched half of two.

• 31:50Sam Morril?

  It's the same plot, right?

• 31:52Speaker 02

  It is.

• 31:52Sam Morril?

The first one is wife and-

• 31:54Speaker 02

  I skipped the rape.

• 31:55Sam Morril?

  You gotta skip the rape.

• 31:56Mark Normand?

  How was it that bad?

• 31:58Sam Morril?

Jeff Goldblum's one of the rapists.

• 32:00Speaker 02

Jeff Goldblum, he's wearing a kinda crown like Jughead in the Archies.

• 32:05Mark Normand?

  Pull it up.

• 32:05Speaker 02

And he says to this woman, he goes, "You rich cunt. I kill rich cunts."

• 32:11Sam Morril?

  It's awful.

• 32:12Speaker 02

Jeff Goldblum says that in the movie.

• 32:15Mark Normand?

So funny, he's in his apartment going, "You rich cunt. I kill rich cunts." No, no, no.

• 32:21Sam Morril?

There's eight other dudes in that audition room, like, "Fuck it, I got this."

• 32:24Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah. No, he nails you rich cunt.

• 32:27Sam Morril?

  But it's like, it's-

• 32:29Speaker 02

  There he is.

• 32:30Mark Normand?

  There he is.

• 32:30Sam Morril?

But the plot of the movie is his wife and daughter are raped and his wife's murdered. And then, and he goes on revenge, not those guys, but he's just like, you know, going on the streets.

• 32:39Speaker 02

  He never gets those guys.

• 32:40Sam Morril?

But then the second one is just, it's just his maid and his daughter are raped and murdered. It's like, they didn't really, they could've gone a different way, maybe.

• 32:47Mark Normand?

  Yeah, they could've twisted it.

• 32:48Sam Morril?

This guy's got some bad luck.

• 32:49Mark Normand?

  Yeah, give me something.

• 32:51Sam Morril?

Yeah, it's- He moves to LA too, right? It's like a different-

• 32:53Speaker 02

He moves to LA. It's kinda like Escape from New York and Escape from LA.

• 32:56Mark Normand?

I like how at the end of that movie, the cops are like, "We know it's you, but just get the hell out of here."

• 33:00Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 33:00Mark Normand?

What a fun, that's so 70s. Killing everybody in town, but just get the hell out of here.

• 33:06Sam Morril?

  Yep.

• 33:06Mark Normand?

We get it. Look at that. I gotta re-watch. I haven't seen this movie in 20 years.

• 33:10Speaker 02

These movies are very shoddily done too. They're very cheap, kinda like right on the street movies, but they're really dynamic. It's like, Mike, to think that Michael Mann was going full circle, was making lush, gorgeous crime films. And this was a straight, this was a huge hit.

• 33:26Mark Normand?

  Huge.

• 33:26Speaker 02

They made four or five of them.

• 33:27Mark Normand?

Yeah. I never got Bronson's face. His face bothers me.

• 33:31Speaker 02

So he ma- he has one of the greatest movies ever, which is what he's, the problem is the guys get famous because they do something great, so then they have them do other things too much, right? Like Leo DiCaprio doesn't need to be fucking J. Edgar Hoover, you know?

• 33:46Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 33:46Speaker 02

  He's good at other things.

• 33:48Mark Normand?

You don't think he can nail it?

• 33:49Sam Morril?

  Well, that was that.

• 33:50Mark Normand?

  Okay.

• 33:51Sam Morril?

  Yeah, that wasn't, that was.

• 33:52Mark Normand?

  I never saw that.

• 33:52Sam Morril?

  I didn't see it either.

• 33:53Speaker 02

But Bronson did a movie called Hard Times.

• 33:58Mark Normand?

  Oh, the fistfight movie. Yeah.

• 34:00Speaker 02

James Coburn. It's a really phenomenal movie because it's not just this, these great fistfight scenes. It's a weird, it's a portrait of New Orleans.

• 34:10Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 34:10Speaker 02

  During the depression.

• 34:11Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 34:12Speaker 02

Which is where you're from, right?

• 34:13Mark Normand?

  Got that right.

• 34:13Speaker 02

And I don't know how they did it because they, it's like, well, I mean, you go to New Orleans. It's like the thirties there.

• 34:19Mark Normand?

  That's true. It's lawless.

• 34:20Speaker 02

Yeah. But it's really, it's gorgeous, funny, um, interesting movie.

• 34:26Mark Normand?

Weren't they in, uh, what is it? The, not the good, the bad and the ugly together.

• 34:30Speaker 02

  No, Dirty Dozen.

• 34:32Mark Normand?

  Magnificent Seven.

• 34:34Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 34:34Speaker 02

  Yes, they were.

• 34:35Mark Normand?

Together. Coburn and him, I'm sorry.

• 34:38Speaker 02

And I'm thinking, well, I don't know if Coburn was in The Dirty Dozen.

• 34:41Sam Morril?

Yo Brenner, I think was in it.

• 34:42Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 34:43Speaker 02

Oh, yeah, Dirty, I mean, well, did you ever see the original Japanese?

• 34:46Sam Morril?

No, I gotta see it. I gotta watch that one.

• 34:49Mark Normand?

  It's good.

• 34:50Speaker 02

  It's great.

• 34:50Mark Normand?

I was nervous. I was like, here we go, old, black and white, but it's, it's.

• 34:54Sam Morril?

You know, you know what I watched the other day for the first time that was crazy? Have you heard of this movie, To Be or Not To Be by Ernest Lubich? Nineteen forty-two made it.

• 35:02Speaker 02

  Lubich was great.

• 35:03Sam Morril?

During the Holocaust and it's a like anti Hitler movie. It's just mocking the Nazis. It's a comedy. It's a straight up comedy with Jack Benny. So controversial when it came out that Jack Benny's dad walked out of it like you're a disgrace.

• 35:15Mark Normand?

I mean, forty-two, they're right in the heart of it.

• 35:17Sam Morril?

They're right in the heart of it and, you know, he's a Berlin Jew. He left. Hitler hates him, obviously. And Carol Lombard dies like two months before it comes out in a plane crash. That Orson Welles is like Nazi agent shot at that.

• 35:29Speaker 02

  No shit.

• 35:30Sam Morril?

  I mean, I, it's probably bullshit.

• 35:32Speaker 02

  War yet.

• 35:32Sam Morril?

No, it was, it was a war.

• 35:34Speaker 02

  Oh, okay.

• 35:34Sam Morril?

It was during the war. Forty-two, yeah.

• 35:36Speaker 02

Well, there was, war movies right after the war are way better than war movies after, like later.

• 35:43Mark Normand?

  Process it a little.

• 35:44Speaker 02

Yeah, well, the ones that were right after were great because they were made by veterans and they were like, Samuel Fuller made a shitload of war movies and he, he was in really deep shit in World War Two. And there's another one called, um, Decision Before Dawn, I think it's called.

• 36:03Mark Normand?

  Hmm.

• 36:03Speaker 02

So I don't know how they did this movie because what year is it?

• 36:07Mark Normand?

  Fifty-one.

• 36:08Speaker 02

Okay. I mean, think about that. That's six years after World War Two.

• 36:11Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 36:12Speaker 02

What was six years ago today, 2020?

• 36:15Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 36:15Speaker 02

It's like a movie about the pandemic would still be like, we just did that.

• 36:19Mark Normand?

  That was Eddington, right?

• 36:20Speaker 02

So this is like, there's still rubble everywhere.

• 36:22Mark Normand?

  Yeah, right.

• 36:23Speaker 02

And so they made this movie and this really incredible actor, uh, the lead, what's his, there he is, Oscar Werner.

• 36:30Mark Normand?

  Werner.

• 36:31Speaker 02

So, uh, Oscar plays a soldier, a Nazi soldier.

• 36:36Mark Normand?

  Oh, Klaus Kinski's in it.

• 36:37Speaker 02

Yes, he is. And, uh, the U. And it's based on a true story that the US started to take POWs, German POWs, and send them back

• 36:46Mark Normand?

  Mm hmm.

• 36:47Speaker 02

  in uniform to be spies.

• 36:49Mark Normand?

  Hmm.

• 36:50Speaker 02

And so he was sent to do a major, huge expl- like killing a lot of people in Germany thing. And he, he hated Hitler. They'd have to, they'd interview these guys and see if they were really committed because otherwise they're gonna go over and fuck things. It's like a very dangerous thing to do to spend, send a guy back as a spy.

• 37:09Mark Normand?

  Sure.

• 37:09Speaker 02

Because if he turns back again, he can really hurt you.

• 37:12Mark Normand?

  Mm hmm.

• 37:12Speaker 02

So he plays a guy who goes over back into Nazi Germany to try to do some sabotaging and cause a big thing. And you just follow him and he's going around German towns and he's seeing friends and he's seeing people he likes.

• 37:28Mark Normand?

  Crazy.

• 37:29Speaker 02

And like his father is a doctor in a hospital and he goes, he's outside the hospital and he calls his dad and his dad comes to the phone, but he can't say yet, say hi to him. And you just see him like start and you're, and what you're watching is you're wondering is he's gonna do this thing.

• 37:43Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 37:43Speaker 02

The movie lets you have a lot of sympathy for Germans.

• 37:47Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 37:48Speaker 02

During the war. And a lot of movies after, that were made right after, because if you were really over there fighting, you came away with some sympathy. You just did. The kind of jingoistic fuck these people is like, that came later, like John Wayne war movies.

• 38:03Mark Normand?

Well, John Wayne famously never served, right? I mean, there's that book about that.

• 38:07Speaker 02

  In any war.

• 38:08Mark Normand?

Five came back, all the directors are like, fuck this guy. He's a pussy. He's playing tough guys.

• 38:13Speaker 02

Yeah, John Ford went over there.

• 38:14Mark Normand?

They went over there, all those guys, yeah.

• 38:16Speaker 02

But, so yeah, the movies they made right after were more reflective, more like this, like more messy.

• 38:21Mark Normand?

  Hmm.

• 38:22Speaker 02

  Uh, that kind of thing.

• 38:23Mark Normand?

Do you find, that's a little gay interview-y question, but do you find that, uh, because you got some of the, the most. You know, out there premises. Do you think you see some of these, these crazy movie premises and you go, I can, like, what is it? Putney Swope?

• 38:39Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 38:39Mark Normand?

You know, that's a wacky film.

• 38:41Speaker 02

  I know, yeah, completely nuts.

• 38:42Mark Normand?

But I think some of your premises, you're like, you go places no one else will go. You got this weird part of your brain that you'll tap into.

• 38:50Speaker 02

I feel like you started super absurdist in your standup and you've kind of gone back to that a little bit, too. Yeah, I kind of have. Well, yeah, thanks. I mean, I'll take it as a compliment.

• 38:59Mark Normand?

No, that's a good, that no one else is going there.

• 39:01Speaker 02

Well, that may, to me, makes it worth doing. Like, I, I guess a lot of what drives what I do is curiosity. So if I can see how something's gonna work, I'm like, well, then why, why do it's like, I already seen the movie. Do you know what I mean? But if you start with something that's really fucked up and strange.

• 39:19Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 39:19Speaker 02

What, what, what about, what about this? What would this be like? And jokes are like, jokes are a more immediate version of that.

• 39:25Mark Normand?

  Totally.

• 39:26Speaker 02

Where you go like, why am I gonna talk about this? This is not, there's things that people think are funny and we know what they are. And, and if you, and that's not easy. Nothing, nothing in standup is easy. But I like starting with something where I'm like, they don't even want to hear about this.

• 39:42Mark Normand?

Yeah, how do you get over that hump?

• 39:44Speaker 02

  It's curiosity. It's wondering.

• 39:47Mark Normand?

But if they're rejecting it, it's like waves coming at you and you're, you keep swimming.

• 39:51Speaker 02

So it's a good question. To me, it's because I don't take those, the rejection personally. It doesn't hurt me. I just think it's interesting. Like, if you were a scientist and you're doing an experiment, if you put this dropper of liquid into this thing, it, does it bubble or does it boil or what does it do? If you got offended that it bubbles, you'd be out of luck as a scientist. But if you're like, I'm just curious to see what'll happen.

• 40:19Mark Normand?

  Sure.

• 40:20Speaker 02

And also, I've been doing this for forty plus, I mean, nineteen eighty-five, so whatever that is.

• 40:24Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 40:26Speaker 02

So when you do a joke and they just draw a blank, you go, oh, that's okay, but we're still all here. And I could do something now that I couldn't have done when you were laughing. When you're laughing, it keeps resetting. When you do a joke that makes people feel like, ah, that's so funny. They laugh and then they're like, here, give us another one. You keep coming back to kind of the same place. But if you do a joke that makes them go, what the fuck was that? Now you're in a new, you've gone to a new place.

• 40:56Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 40:57Speaker 02

And there's a bunch of jokes there. That nobody else is gonna find because they feel more comfortable in this.

• 41:04Mark Normand?

Yeah. But I guess it's not even a personal, that's interesting. It's not even a personal thing for me. It's like, oh, no one, I'm gonna bomb and no one's gonna come back. No one's gonna see me again. Are they gonna walk away going, that was a bad show?

• 41:15Speaker 02

Yeah, but okay, for example, you're a really skilled comic. You are a guy who.

• 41:21Mark Normand?

  Clip that.

• 41:21Speaker 02

  Kills.

• 41:22Mark Normand?

  Okay.

• 41:23Speaker 02

  Your killer act.

• 41:24Mark Normand?

  Alright.

• 41:25Speaker 02

And you're, it's clear you're in success mode on stage. Like you're, you're, you're doing great, so why would one, it's incredible to me actually that like one, you're thinking, if they don't laugh at this, they're never gonna come back.

• 41:40Mark Normand?

Well, maybe that's a little extreme, but they're gonna be, they're gonna walk away sad.

• 41:44Speaker 02

But they're not gonna walk away, they're still there.

• 41:47Mark Normand?

I mean, after it's over, they're gonna go, yeah, we saw the guy, he sucked.

• 41:50Sam Morril?

Yeah, but also Louis, there's, there's not a lot of comics at your level who have the comfort bombing that you have. And I mean that as a compliment. I mean, I've seen.

• 41:58Speaker 02

  Yeah, it doesn't bother me.

• 41:59Sam Morril?

Yeah, it really doesn't. Like, we've both seen Louis like in workout mode and he just, I've never seen, it's rare that dudes as famous as Louis are comfortable taking an L set.

• 42:10Mark Normand?

  That's true.

• 42:11Speaker 02

It's so fun to do, like, I remember going into the cellar one night and it was the upstairs room, the lounge, not the, the bar.

• 42:21Mark Normand?

  The bar.

• 42:21Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 42:22Speaker 02

I think at times that's the worst room.

• 42:24Mark Normand?

  Easily.

• 42:25Speaker 02

That's where they put the end of the audience that has not gotten to.

• 42:28Sam Morril?

But that kind of makes it the best room sometimes.

• 42:30Speaker 02

  Sometimes it's fucking great.

• 42:31Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 42:32Sam Morril?

Cause when you go in with a low bar.

• 42:34Speaker 02

You can have a good time.

• 42:35Sam Morril?

Yeah, and you're kind of like, if I get one line out of this set.

• 42:38Speaker 02

  Right.

• 42:39Sam Morril?

You know, if I get something.

• 42:40Speaker 02

But it was not a good night and everybody was sitting at those tables outside of the curtain and everyone's just, it just was fucking bad.

• 42:48Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 42:48Speaker 02

And they're all looking at me. I kind of feel other comedians' eyes on me as I'm about to go on stage and I'm, and I've got a list of bits that I want to try that aren't, they ain't been working.

• 42:58Sam Morril?

  Hmm.

• 42:59Speaker 02

And part of me wants to just go up there and smoke the place.

• 43:03Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 43:03Speaker 02

You know what I mean? And show them, this is how it's done. But I just want, I came here to accomplish something. So I went up and I'm trying these bits and the crowd's like, ah, like nah, like not beyond bombing to like, what the fuck?

• 43:20Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 43:20Speaker 02

Like it's, because that's the kind of people that kind of go to the cellar.

• 43:23Sam Morril?

  Totally, totally.

• 43:23Speaker 02

There's a lot of girls in black dresses and they're like together and they're like, what? So they're not, and I'm older and I'm doing these weird things.

• 43:32Sam Morril?

  Right.

• 43:33Speaker 02

Like nah. And I kind of get off and I walk by that table and they're all looking at me, the comics. And I said, that was horrible. And they were all, they all smiled, like it made them happy that I acknowledged that I ate it and that we all ate it. We're all the same, you know what I mean? I like, I like, I like being in that world of bombing is, is a.

• 43:56Sam Morril?

Quince. Getting dressed for the fall should be easy. A good sweater, pants that fit, a jacket that keeps you warm. Somehow buying those three things can cost you more than your vacation. Quince makes high-quality staples using premium materials like 100% Mongolian cashmere. That's a good cashmere, I guess.

• 44:13Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 44:14Sam Morril?

Organic cotton, merino wool. You know I love merino wool.

• 44:17Speaker 02

  That's the best wool.

• 44:18Sam Morril?

That's that wool keeps your feet nice and warm in the winter.

• 44:21Speaker 02

  Very nice.

• 44:22Sam Morril?

Love merino wool. Their cashmere sweaters start at 60 bucks. That's wild. They also have premium down jackets, classic wool outerwear for when the temperature drops. Everything at Quince is priced 50 to 80% less than similar brands. They work directly with ethical factories and cut out the middlemen. So you're paying for quality instead of the brand markup. That's right. No kid labor, I would, I think. Sounds like no kid labor. Is it ethical, right?

• 44:47Speaker 02

Uh, no animal testing, probably ethical.

• 44:49Mark Normand?

  Very good.

• 44:50Speaker 02

I, I wear their shit all the time.

• 44:51Mark Normand?

  Oh, I love Quince.

• 44:52Speaker 02

I love it, dude. I, it's quality, it fits right, and it's not expensive. I, I love it. And I like what, like, it's not the logo everywhere.

• 44:59Mark Normand?

  Yeah, true, true.

• 45:21Mark Normand?

  Thank you.

• 45:22Speaker 02

There's dignity in it, you know, so it kinda gives me a good feeling. And kinda, you can feel that it heats you up like a fever, kinda burns off some demons.

• 45:29Mark Normand?

Well, Bill Burr has that too, where he can kind of go far and then win them back.

• 45:34Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 45:35Mark Normand?

I, I quit, I like boxing, and you know, Rocky Marciano had the, uh, had a, they found he had a padding on his head, like he had extra weird cartilage on his head.

• 45:44Speaker 02

  Really?

• 45:45Mark Normand?

So he can take more hits. And I think some comics have a thing where they can take more abuse from bombing and keep going.

• 45:51Speaker 02

If you can take a lot of beatings, but there's a level beyond winning them back.

• 45:57Mark Normand?

  Yeah, that's for sure.

• 45:58Speaker 02

  There's another thing.

• 45:59Mark Normand?

But if you can get all the way out and come back, like in a spaceship.

• 46:03Speaker 02

  It's, you go way out.

• 46:04Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 46:05Speaker 02

You, there's no court, like a spaceship.

• 46:07Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 46:08Speaker 02

  This, this umbilical cord.

• 46:09Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 46:10Speaker 02

  It ain't there.

• 46:11Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 46:12Speaker 02

You've taken them somewhere where they're like, we don't even know why this.

• 46:15Mark Normand?

  Now you're floating.

• 46:15Speaker 02

  This is not entertainment.

• 46:17Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 46:17Speaker 02

And you're just like, alright guys, well here we are, there's no up or down here. I, I'm, but you're all freaking out, you're worried, cause they don't like, the audience doesn't like feeling like they're in a struggle or in a bad place. But I'm okay. Uh, my brain's working.

• 46:33Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 46:33Speaker 02

And I learned that a little from boxing, cause when you're getting beaten up in boxing, the only way out is your brain. You have to be smart. You can't, it's not just hitting back, it's like having a good idea.

• 46:44Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 46:44Speaker 02

They're upset, cause I've done sometimes two, three things in a row that haven't worked.

• 46:49Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 46:49Speaker 02

Deep in. And I'm okay, I'm breathing okay. I'm not panicking, I'm not struggling to get them back. I'm like, we're in a really interesting place way out here now. And there's jokes out here, there's comedy you haven't considered out here. And if you can start a new garden of comedy there instead of coming back.

• 47:07Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 47:08Speaker 02

Now you got a whole other, you got a whole range of shit, plus stuff you can do.

• 47:12Mark Normand?

Look, I know your whole career and all that. You started with the same hour, you did the same hour for 10 years.

• 47:18Speaker 02

  I did.

• 47:18Mark Normand?

And now you're doing the complete, you went the complete other way, where you did a new hour every year for a while.

• 47:23Speaker 02

  That's true.

• 47:24Mark Normand?

So how did you go from, hey, I'm the hour every year, play it safe guy, same hour, you know, live in Houston. That hour, the, the, the breakfast order, the eggs on a nail, every night.

• 47:34Sam Morril?

The guy getting hit by the car.

• 47:36Mark Normand?

Yes, the peach. How did you go from that guy, play it safe guy, to out in the atmosphere with a new garden?

• 47:46Speaker 02

  Good question. Well.

• 47:48Mark Normand?

And what did that, what that, what was that flip? Was it gradual?

• 47:50Speaker 02

If some of it was gradual and some of it was just getting really sick of it. Because I, the, the opening joke to that set was, um, I live in New York. And, uh, it's the only city in the world where you have to say things like, hey, that's mine, don't pee on that. That was the joke.

• 48:10Mark Normand?

  That's funny.

• 48:10Speaker 02

Now, I did that joke thousands of times. And I hated it so much, every time I would say it, I hated the way my mouth felt. Like, you know, do you know that kind of thing where you've done a joke too many times? I didn't even know what I was saying, I was just making breath go through my fucking throat. And making sounds, and they'd laugh and I'd hate it.

• 48:30Sam Morril?

  It was on autopilot?

• 48:31Speaker 02

Yes. And all of the jokes in that first hour, I just did them for years and years. And I started to, uh, rot and feel like I got nothing.

• 48:40Sam Morril?

Was there a comic that made you, that gave you like the bump, or was it just you?

• 48:44Mark Normand?

  Was it just hating it?

• 48:45Speaker 02

Well, there was a few things that started it. One of them was, I was, me and a bunch of comics in New York were just like. Doing our same sets, you do the same five when you audition for Letterman and the same 20 when you try to get on this thing, you know, whatever.

• 49:00Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 49:01Speaker 02

No one's getting an hour special. That was like, nobody was getting that. And you try to get money at the clubs sometimes and SNL once in a while auditions, but it was just miserable. And then Chris Rock, who had been on SNL, but then vanished for a while.

• 49:18Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 49:19Speaker 02

He came back and he was at Caroline's headlining and I was friends with him earlier, but I hadn't seen him a long time. So me and a bunch of comedians went to Caroline's and we were all sitting in one booth. And it was astonishing. He was leaning forward and he was doing these jokes that I was like, I didn't know this was an option to get this good.

• 49:44Mark Normand?

It was bring the pain, probably.

• 49:45Speaker 02

  Yeah, I think so.

• 49:48Speaker 02

And we all sat there. At the end of the show, everyone was standing and we were all just.

• 49:53Mark Normand?

Wow. So that woke your ass up.

• 49:55Speaker 02

  It made me realize.

• 49:55Sam Morril?

Funny that has the opposite impact on a comedian.

• 49:58Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 49:58Sam Morril?

  I fucking hate myself.

• 50:00Speaker 02

  So upset.

• 50:02Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 50:03Speaker 02

It's like if everybody was high jumpers together and everyone's like three feet, man, how'd you fucking do three feet? And then some guy does like eight and you're like, no, no, no, no, wait a minute. Three is a lot. He's like, no, it's not. It's nothing.

• 50:16Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 50:17Speaker 02

And I was, I think, close to 30 or something.

• 50:21Mark Normand?

  Hmm.

• 50:22Speaker 02

  I don't remember how old I was.

• 50:23Sam Morril?

Put that lit a fire under your ass.

• 50:26Speaker 02

Yeah. And then I started thinking, I should actually like study what I do. I should actually be deliberate. And I, Chris and I rekindled friendship and he gave me certain advice, like if you're driving to a gig, turn the radio off. And I mean, forget phones back then, but sit there and stew in your car. You need to get uncomfortable. And you need to play clubs where they don't like you. And I started thinking like, oh no, you actually have to be like training. You have to actually, actually try. You don't just sit around like, here's my act. Where's my fucking deal?

• 50:58Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 50:58Speaker 02

You go forget getting attention from anybody.

• 51:01Mark Normand?

  Hmm.

• 51:02Speaker 02

And just think what can make me better. And I, I started to listen to guys more, uh, more. I started, I got all the, Richard Pryor put out just around then. A big CD set of all of his, you could buy them all at once, all his albums. I listened to them all.

• 51:20Mark Normand?

  Hmm.

• 51:22Speaker 02

  And I listened to uh.

• 51:23Sam Morril?

What did you take from Pryor?

• 51:25Speaker 02

Uh, just this fluidity and this like, you know, add it easy, Richard Pryor and owning moments. The thing about Pryor is that people, I think, felt like he was really like opinionated and he said big things, but he was silly as fuck.

• 51:41Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 51:41Speaker 02

  Funny and fucking silly.

• 51:44Sam Morril?

People forget that about Bill Hicks too. They always, it's always like the heavy clips, but there were moments where he was so damn silly.

• 51:49Speaker 02

Oh, yeah. The reason Bill Hicks was great was because he knew how to use a microphone, like he made funny noises and shit.

• 51:54Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 51:55Speaker 02

He was just a great comic. Um, but anyway, so yeah, Pryor, and then I heard Carlin in an interview talk about his process. And he said that he looked at it like, I'm writing this show now. And I'm writing, it just had never occurred to me, like I'm doing this show, I do it for about a year, then I do one of my, because he was the guy doing a special all the time.

• 52:15Sam Morril?

  Right.

• 52:16Speaker 02

And then he said, then I kind of start working, he had a more gradual thing of throwing it out gradually and starting over. But the idea of like, I did this show, this show's done.

• 52:26Sam Morril?

  Mm hmm.

• 52:27Speaker 02

Let's start again, was so deeply exciting to me, that that was an all at once thing.

• 52:33Sam Morril?

  Wow.

• 52:33Speaker 02

Like, I'm doing that from now, because I did, I, when I did Lucky Louie, um, this show never had a chance.

• 52:40Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 52:41Speaker 02

Definitely getting cancelled, and I knew it, so I, but I was in HBO.

• 52:46Sam Morril?

Why do you think it never had a chance?

• 52:47Speaker 02

It just was not something people wanted and it was, you know, a lot of reasons, but I was there, I was inside HBO, so I asked them, can I have an hour?

• 52:57Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 52:58Speaker 02

And they said yes, so the show got cancelled.

• 53:01Sam Morril?

  Was that shameless?

• 53:02Speaker 02

Yeah, and I went on the road for a year, and I built that hour.

• 53:07Sam Morril?

And you had done a half hour with?

• 53:09Speaker 02

I had done a half hour where a lot of stuff I'd been working on, every, it was everything since that album to the half hour went into that.

• 53:17Sam Morril?

Well, you had that closer, the talking to your kid, the why bit.

• 53:20Mark Normand?

  That's a great bit.

• 53:21Sam Morril?

That was, that was the bit where I felt like, I mean, just as someone, as a spectator, I was like, oh, he's turned a corner, I think, creatively. I think when you started bringing your kids into it, there was something, like, no one had talked about kids that way.

• 53:33Mark Normand?

No, for sure, throw them in the dumpster. That was a big bit.

• 53:37Speaker 02

So that was a big, and then also there was this general feeling also that. I didn't care anymore that if they didn't laugh, it was okay with me.

• 53:48Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 53:49Speaker 02

  Like.

• 53:49Sam Morril?

Which some comics say, but they take the wrong way.

• 53:52Speaker 02

That's right. I don't mean it like fuck you. I just mean like, I think if I don't get a laugh, we're all gonna be okay. And there's something past it. I always felt that. Yes, it was like, why not try it? It's gonna be okay. It's just one joke. And the first one that I joke I came up with that was that was the thing about the World Trade Center, the joke was, you know how bad a person you are by how soon after nine 11 you jerked off for the first time.

• 54:17Mark Normand?

  I remember that.

• 54:19Speaker 02

And every time I would do that joke, people would go, no, like loud, loud, no, no. And it would just get silence. But I'm like, I know it's a great joke. So I'm gonna do it every night until it starts working.

• 54:30Sam Morril?

And the turn at the end.

• 54:31Speaker 02

And then it, yeah, I don't remember.

• 54:32Sam Morril?

The turn was, for me, it was in between the two, the two planes.

• 54:37Mark Normand?

  That's a great line.

• 54:38Speaker 02

Between the two buildings going down.

• 54:39Sam Morril?

Cause you took something awful and you, and you found a light angle.

• 54:42Speaker 02

I found a really, really selfish, silly angle to it.

• 54:46Sam Morril?

You made yourself the bad guy in nine eleven.

• 54:48Speaker 02

Nine 11, that's right. If you can do that, that's pretty great.

• 54:51Sam Morril?

But that's kind of the beauty of that joke is like, you're like, I'm the asshole.

• 54:56Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 54:56Mark Normand?

Yeah, I'm gross. Look at me. I'm a loser.

• 54:58Sam Morril?

Yeah, that, that was, that wasn't shameless, that one?

• 55:01Speaker 02

  That was, no, it was.

• 55:02Sam Morril?

  Chewed up?

• 55:03Speaker 02

  I don't, I don't remember.

• 55:04Mark Normand?

  Chewed up.

• 55:05Sam Morril?

  It wasn't chewed up?

• 55:06Mark Normand?

  I think so.

• 55:07Sam Morril?

I don't know if, did I do it in a special? That was a joke that like was an example to me that I, for me, that I would tell someone when they'd say like, oh, you shouldn't do a nine 11 joke. Like, that's a great nine 11 joke. You know, it's, it's no subject's off limit.

• 55:20Speaker 02

No, but also it isn't for who likes it. So it's like, if somebody says you shouldn't, well, then they shouldn't watch that kind of comedy.

• 55:27Sam Morril?

  Right, right.

• 55:27Speaker 02

But it doesn't, there's no universal collective, what we should be doing or not. There's just, you do, you do what you do. And then the results are the results. In terms of how many people like it, where do people like it, where do people not? I never had in any quarrel with people saying, I don't like jokes that are like that. That's fine. That's their thing. Then they like another kind of humor. You know, there's lots of kinds.

• 55:50Sam Morril?

But my point about that is that I think it's such a strong joke that it can turn people who might not necessarily like.

• 55:55Speaker 02

And then there's, so well, look, that what's usually, what comes and goes, but seems to always be there is that people are open to comedy. Oh, comedy is a place where people are open. In other words, I'll listen to something I don't, I'm not, that's not my kind of thing. Cause I might laugh. Laughing is fucking rare and it's fun.

• 56:13Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 56:13Speaker 02

So you're like, I don't like jokes about abortion. I don't like, I don't like, abortion is a touchy subject for me, but I'll, I'll give this a listen because I might laugh. And if they find themselves laughing, you know, you, there's a connection there. It's good.

• 56:25Mark Normand?

  That's a great point.

• 56:27Speaker 02

  So.

• 56:28Mark Normand?

Damn, I had a thing, but I was so involved in that.

• 56:31Sam Morril?

Well, I'm curious, when, when you write, cause you say like, Carlin puts on, you know, this is my show. This is a new show. When you're writing, is it free association? Are you, are you, you know, reading the paper? I've seen you at the store getting the paper. Like, what's your process when you sit down?

• 56:46Speaker 02

I love the, I get the paper because I like the crosswords. I read the Wall Street Journal. I get that at home, but I go by the New York Times in the weekends for the, I like the crossword. But, uh, no, when I, I, I don't, uh, I mean, there's a cycle. So I don't know where you start it. Like I just did a special. So I'm off, I'm out.

• 57:07Mark Normand?

  You're back to zero.

• 57:08Speaker 02

Yeah. I got no jokes. I got two or three left over.

• 57:12Mark Normand?

  All right.

• 57:12Speaker 02

That I came up with towards the end of the tour.

• 57:14Mark Normand?

  Mm hmm.

• 57:15Speaker 02

I have a bit about farts that I'm really proud of.

• 57:17Mark Normand?

  All right.

• 57:19Speaker 02

And, uh, so when I come back, I'll have that. It's a pretty decent bit.

• 57:23Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 57:23Speaker 02

And so usually there's a couple like that, little things like, like one or two.

• 57:29Mark Normand?

  Mm hmm.

• 57:30Speaker 02

And then, um, and so I just put it on my, I put comedy out of my mind though. I don't think about it for months.

• 57:37Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 57:37Speaker 02

Try to go as long as I can. Like last night I was texting with Daniel Simonson because about the World Cup. He loves soccer and he said, I'm going to miss the game because I'm going to the cellar. And I was like, oh, I want to go to the cellar. Like I want to be on stage.

• 57:49Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 57:50Speaker 02

But I, right now is the stage where like, I'm actually prohibiting it. Like just don't do it.

• 57:54Mark Normand?

  Really?

• 57:55Speaker 02

Don't think about jokes. Don't touch it.

• 57:57Mark Normand?

  You want to live?

• 57:58Speaker 02

Yeah. And also just stay off the muscle. Just stay off of it completely. Let it bury the potato under the ground and let it just sit there and

• 58:06Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 58:07Speaker 02

  Get fermented.

• 58:09Sam Morril?

  You wanna live?

• 58:09Speaker 02

Yeah. And I, well, yes, I wanna live my life, but I also don't, for the sake of the stand-up, I don't want to be doing it right now. It needs to cool off. Like in Hungary, they take a cow's head and they fill it full of crazy spices and shit and snails, and they wrap it in a rag and they bury it under the ground out in their yard, and it sits under there for like months. And then they, and then they dig it up and they eat it.

• 58:37Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 58:37Speaker 02

It's like the best thing you ever ate.

• 58:39Mark Normand?

Come on, give that a goog.

• 58:40Speaker 02

Give that a little Hungarian be, I don't know, do your best. You know what you're doing.

• 58:45Mark Normand?

  Cow's head berry.

• 58:47Speaker 02

  Yeah, something like that. Uh.

• 58:50Mark Normand?

Wow. I mean, the months is annoying because you're like, I wanna eat the fucking thing.

• 58:54Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 58:54Mark Normand?

I gotta wait months? What if I'm starving?

• 58:56Speaker 02

No, I don't think you're in the right track. But anyway, it's something they do with, I think it's in Hungary. Nah. Say delicacy.

• 59:06Sam Morril?

You could just say you wanna take some time off too, you know?

• 59:08Mark Normand?

I just wanna take some time off, man. I just, Kyle's a long story.

• 59:13Sam Morril?

You want life, you want, you need to, if you need stuff to write about, you need to recharge. You've done this, as you said, forty-one years.

• 59:18Speaker 02

Yes, the last time I stopped, I took, I took a full, uh,

• 59:23Mark Normand?

  Head beef.

• 59:24Speaker 02

Year and a half, and I, my thought was, I'm not doing it anymore.

• 59:27Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 59:27Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 59:28Speaker 02

  I was quitting.

• 59:29Mark Normand?

Nah, I knew that was never gonna take.

• 59:31Speaker 02

Yeah, I thought, I honestly thought it would because I loved, I felt so good.

• 59:35Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 59:36Speaker 02

And once, I live near, I live right between the cellar and the stand. So once in a while, I see comedians walking by from one to the other, and they have this pasty look on their face. I'm like, I'm going to do a spot, and I'm like, I don't fucking miss that at all.

• 59:51Mark Normand?

  Nah.

• 59:52Speaker 02

It's like seeing people go down the river Styx. They just have like no soul anymore.

• 59:56Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 59:56Speaker 02

Stand-up is such a fucked up lifestyle, so I don't miss it.

• 1:00:00Mark Normand?

  True.

• 1:00:01Sam Morril?

But you kind of romanticize it. I feel like watching Louie made me feel like, it felt like being a comic was cool.

• 1:00:06Speaker 02

  It ain't, man.

• 1:00:07Mark Normand?

  Nah.

• 1:00:08Sam Morril?

But in the show, but in the show, in the show, it felt- In the show, it felt cool. I mean, like.

• 1:00:12Mark Normand?

Yeah, and the road is great, the hotels.

• 1:00:15Speaker 02

  Nah, you're right, it is.

• 1:00:17Sam Morril?

Even the episode with Jim Florentine, where you guys are in a comedy condo together. And Jim is playing a hack, he's hilarious. And there's a line where you're being arrogant about your craft and he goes, it's a fucking bar trick. There was something, I love that you kind of would shit on yourself and like.

• 1:00:35Speaker 02

Well, we shot that show in, uh, uh, New, in, in Long Island at the governor's.

• 1:00:40Sam Morril?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:00:41Speaker 02

And it was great, cause I asked him, just be a huge hack. Go on and be just, and he was like, yeah, all right.

• 1:00:51Speaker 02

And he's like, sir, you got three girls at your table, you must be hung like a fucking elephant. And he's just doing the basics. He's crushing. It was so fun to watch a guy who you just go, don't have any, just do it.

• 1:01:05Mark Normand?

So he just did his act.

• 1:01:07Speaker 02

I mean, he's a thousand times funnier and more inventive than that. I loved. And, uh, anyway, yeah, so he was great in that. That was really fun.

• 1:01:16Sam Morril?

But you would, but like you would call yourself out, but then also there were times where I thought you like looked cool as a comic in it, whereas I know that you, you know, were self-deprecating, but.

• 1:01:26Sam Morril?

I mean, the lifestyle seemed cool to me. Maybe, maybe it hit me at the right time, like I was.

• 1:01:30Speaker 02

It was, it was, it did feel cool. It does a lot of the time. It does. Sometimes it feels incredibly cool. Sometimes. You can't believe what you're, what you're in the middle of.

• 1:01:39Mark Normand?

Yeah, like when you're running from one club to the next and like, the joke's kind of starting to work better. That's the fun part. It's not the running around or the bombing or whatever. It's that like tinkering.

• 1:01:49Speaker 02

No doubt. That's what I was talking to Keith, uh, Robinson. And he had done some joke about a girl vandalizing his scooter, you know, cause he's got, he's got a stroke. And so he has like a rascal. And he said, some girl in his building wanted him to have sex with her and he wouldn't. So she vandalized his scooter. She fucked up his scooter. And he, he was telling the story and he didn't really, wasn't a joke yet. And afterwards, I was like, there's something there. And he goes, yeah, I don't know what it is yet, but there's something there. And then somehow the conversation turned into talking about how long should we do stand up for in our lives? And he said, as long as I'm curious about bits like that, as long as I have that sort of like, how do I make that work?

• 1:02:30Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:31Speaker 02

I'll keep doing this. And it really is, it's a small thing that makes you love it.

• 1:02:35Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 1:02:36Speaker 02

  It's that little like, right?

• 1:02:38Mark Normand?

That light in the tunnel. Oh, I see something there.

• 1:02:40Speaker 02

I see something there and you think, and then when you really fucking come up with the thing. Oh, God.

• 1:02:47Sam Morril?

Keith, Keith's still turning that material is feeling is pretty insane. It's pretty awesome that like,

• 1:02:52Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:02:52Sam Morril?

That he's walking from set to set, you know, after two strokes and still writing really funny new shit.

• 1:02:58Speaker 02

  That's how fun it is.

• 1:02:59Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:00Speaker 02

To come up with a bit and to know, oh, I just, like when you're doing a special and you've been doing the bits all year. And then you come up with just.

• 1:03:11Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:03:12Speaker 02

Right. And sometimes that happens right after.

• 1:03:16Mark Normand?

  Too late. Yeah.

• 1:03:17Speaker 02

  Unfortunately.

• 1:03:18Mark Normand?

But that's why you see these guys do the same act for 10, 20 years. They seem sad about it, you know? And they seem kind of like road hard and weary, just kind of like, I'm going to do a set. But when they see the guys who are always working, that's a different kind of pain. But there's hope at the end of that. There's hope involved in that pain.

• 1:03:36Speaker 02

Well, you're in pain because you want something.

• 1:03:38Mark Normand?

  Yes. Yes, exactly.

• 1:03:40Sam Morril?

Bombing sucks, even if you're going towards something, it's like, you know, you know, it's part of the process, but you get off stage some nights, even though you're like, I got one night and you still feel like a piece of shit a little bit.

• 1:03:50Speaker 02

  Of course.

• 1:03:50Mark Normand?

  Totally.

• 1:03:51Speaker 02

Well, it's like when you watch an athlete, like I remember watching Derek Jeter once coming around third base to try to score on like, you know, where he shouldn't have gone around third and his, his teeth were gritted. It was like a great moment because he scored. But he looks upset.

• 1:04:06Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:07Speaker 02

Cause it, there's a great video of Tom Brady out of that whole ESPN thing. I didn't like most of it, but there's one thing he does where he talks about every time he knows a lot of the great athletes. And every time somebody wins a championship, he calls him and says, hey, you did it. Great. And the guy always goes, that was fucking hard, man. That like they're never happy.

• 1:04:31Mark Normand?

  Oh, right.

• 1:04:32Speaker 02

Really. And he goes, yep, it's because if you want to do great things and achieve your dreams, it's fucking hard.

• 1:04:39Mark Normand?

  It's hard. It really is.

• 1:04:41Sam Morril?

When you were doing an hour a year, which I feel like you were the comic that is the reason a lot of comics are doing an hour a year now.

• 1:04:47Mark Normand?

  Thanks a lot.

• 1:04:48Sam Morril?

Yeah. I mean, seriously though, I think Carlin was doing it, but then for modern comics, I think you were the one who set the bar there. And then not every.

• 1:04:58Speaker 02

Other guys doing that in England, they do it a lot because they have that, that, that thing in Edinburgh. So in your, you know, I never did it. So I don't know.

• 1:05:06Mark Normand?

No, there's just a bunch of like life stories.

• 1:05:08Sam Morril?

Emo. It's a little more emo. It's a little, it's not as dense. It's not as dense.

• 1:05:12Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:05:12Sam Morril?

But, but you, uh, you're doing, you're editing your show, you're writing your show, you're directing your show, you're starring in your show. And you're doing hour a year when you're talking about like it not being fun. Are you, are you talking about that a little bit?

• 1:05:24Speaker 02

You mean, because it's such hard work.

• 1:05:26Sam Morril?

You were just, yeah, you probably like, you're talking now about living. Do you feel like you're, I don't want to say you're like a retired athlete, but that, that's like what it sounds like a little.

• 1:05:33Speaker 02

No, back then I was more, I was really in the bigs. Yeah, I was big league guy. And there's stuff that I did back then. It's just, I think I can do a lot of the things I used to do. It just takes longer and I gotta be more measured about it. Like this last tour I did was too, it was just too many shows.

• 1:05:48Sam Morril?

You were going like you were Belarus, uh, everywhere.

• 1:05:51Speaker 02

  Going around the world.

• 1:05:52Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:53Speaker 02

Um, yeah, I was in India and.

• 1:05:56Mark Normand?

  Crazy.

• 1:05:56Speaker 02

Turkey, all these, Hong Kong. Uh, but that was too many shows and I, I, I built a tour that was, um, more shows than I'd ever done in my whole career. And there were times out on the road where I was like, I can't fucking keep doing this. Cause there were years where I just was like inexhaustible and I could do, uh, when I did the tour that ended in this special call hilarious. The shows were often 90 minutes and sometimes two hours.

• 1:06:23Mark Normand?

  Jesus.

• 1:06:24Speaker 02

I used to do this thing where this was like at the height of like, I, I felt anyway, I could do anything. Where I had a good 15 minute closing chunk. Like this is all closer, right? And so I didn't, I used to get offstage without it and come back and do it as an encore. So I had a set that was strong enough without my actual closer. And I close really strong, goodnight at whatever, an hour twenty or something.

• 1:06:54Mark Normand?

  Damn.

• 1:06:54Speaker 02

Get offstage and then they'd go nuts. I'd come back on and I'd go, alright, here we go. And then I'd have fifteen minutes of closing grade nuclear material. And people would go, what the fuck did I just see? That's what it, that's what it felt like. That was the experience I was having.

• 1:07:13Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:07:13Speaker 02

I go back sometimes and like samples some of my specials. Hilarious is not one of my favorites. I think I got, I got pretty crazy thinking I was better than I was then. That's the way I look at it, but um.

• 1:07:25Mark Normand?

You say it is one of your best or not one of your best?

• 1:07:26Speaker 02

  Not one of my best.

• 1:07:27Mark Normand?

  Oh, really?

• 1:07:29Speaker 02

But I'm not that guy anymore. I mean, when I did the beacon to do my special, the show was so great. It was about as good as it gets. And I, I never do encores anymore. Like I don't, I just, I have them turn the music on right away. Cause I just think it feels cheesy in encore. But I told the guy that runs my stuff, I said, you know what, tonight, let's, let's see what hap- leave the lights down. And see what happens. I, I had a great set. I got offstage and as soon as I left the stage, they were like, alright, let's go.

• 1:08:00Speaker 02

I was like, alright, those days are well over. They got enough.

• 1:08:04Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:08:05Speaker 02

  They got just enough.

• 1:08:06Mark Normand?

Now, do, do you find it gets easier? You even said you've been doing forty plus.

• 1:08:10Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:08:10Mark Normand?

Does the bit get easier, like to crack? Can you see where the funny is?

• 1:08:15Speaker 02

Cause I, I think you can see more of, you could see funny from different, more angles.

• 1:08:20Mark Normand?

  Okay, I hope.

• 1:08:22Speaker 02

But they're on to me, they know me. So there is a level of this where if you do it long enough, you become the context for your own material. There's nothing like being a new comic who's really strong. Cause people like, where the fuck did this come from? Like I've never heard a guy like this.

• 1:08:40Mark Normand?

  Sure.

• 1:08:41Speaker 02

You have that and you have that. You guys are both like, I never heard your voices before. You guys are new comics.

• 1:08:47Mark Normand?

  Hey, alright.

• 1:08:48Speaker 02

Yeah, both super strong and, uh, and original. So it's like exciting to watch, cause I'm not watching it kinda like, oh yeah, I know this. I'm not, this isn't his new special, not for me anyway. I don't watch as much as I used to.

• 1:09:01Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:02Speaker 02

But people have seen me and seen me and there's some, I evolve in some ways.

• 1:09:06Mark Normand?

  Yep.

• 1:09:07Speaker 02

But the tour before this one, the reason, one reason I thought of quitting is because I started hearing my own bits and going like, yeah, I know.

• 1:09:19Speaker 02

I'm starting to see the trick.

• 1:09:20Mark Normand?

  Oh, God.

• 1:09:21Speaker 02

If I can see it, I bet they can fucking see it. So.

• 1:09:24Mark Normand?

  Formulaic.

• 1:09:25Speaker 02

I started to feel like I had a formula.

• 1:09:27Sam Morril?

What do you, what do you do? What do you do when that happens though?

• 1:09:30Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:30Sam Morril?

Do you think like, okay, I'm doing too many like bit bits and I need to go into stories more? Like, do you shift up the like, the approach or what do you do?

• 1:09:38Speaker 02

I think you gotta empty out, take a long time off.

• 1:09:42Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 1:09:42Speaker 02

And if you're doing a show because it's time to do another show, there's something to that. I mean, when you first come out of the gate, where you guys, I think still are, you don't have to worry about that. Just keep generating and it's all going to be pretty fresh. You're a new, you're a new sun, but once you've kind of supernovated out.

• 1:10:01Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:10:02Speaker 02

And you're a red dwarf, you gotta come up with a reason to be out there. You gotta go like, why am I doing this?

• 1:10:09Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:10Speaker 02

So I stopped and I thought, I, but it's also just like Jim said, this is all a bar trick. It's, this is kind of bullshit because I, I left for a year and a half. I took sculpture classes and I wrote, I wrote a novel and all this stuff. I remember our, uh, what's his name? Uh, Ra, uh, Renan.

• 1:10:27Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:28Speaker 02

I ran into him somewhere and I was excited. I'm like, I'm taking drawing classes. I'm taking sculpture classes.

• 1:10:33Mark Normand?

Like a fat chicken at a rom-com. Reinventing, I'm drinking wine.

• 1:10:38Speaker 02

Yes. And Ra, and Renan said, which one of your, uh, uh, which one of your retirement activities do you like the most? And he made me feel old and I was like, yech. But anyway, I took all that time off and I thought, I'm going to have a reason to come back to the stage. That's going to feel like a new, a new approach.

• 1:11:02Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:03Speaker 02

But all that happened was I thought of a joke.

• 1:11:05Mark Normand?

  Sure.

• 1:11:06Speaker 02

  For the first time.

• 1:11:08Sam Morril?

But are you not, are you doing?

• 1:11:09Speaker 02

I was out on a vacation with a, a friend and I said, uh, I said, are you getting any on our phone, you know?

• 1:11:18Mark Normand?

  Oh, bars?

• 1:11:19Speaker 02

And she said, no. And I said, I'm only have one bar and it's a gay bar.

• 1:11:23Mark Normand?

  There, that's in the hour.

• 1:11:24Speaker 02

Yes, it is. That's the first one.

• 1:11:26Mark Normand?

  Ah.

• 1:11:27Speaker 02

And I was like, nah, okay. What am I gonna do with one joke? Like, I can't let it sit. I can't let it die.

• 1:11:33Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:34Speaker 02

So I just, I'm like, okay, I've got a notebook now.

• 1:11:39Speaker 02

So I just wrote it down. And then I thought of another one. I think the second one was, um, about breastfeeding. What was it? Oh, yeah, I bit my mother's nipple when I was, my mother told me that I bit her nipple when I was breastfeeding, which I don't remember because I was drunk.

• 1:11:58Mark Normand?

There you go. It's like a bird.

• 1:12:00Speaker 02

That one reminded me of you.

• 1:12:01Mark Normand?

  Oh, okay.

• 1:12:02Speaker 02

Yeah, it was a little bit a Norman.

• 1:12:05Mark Normand?

  Yeah, I like that one.

• 1:12:05Speaker 02

You get other guys in your head a little. I took your rhythm a little. Of course, I don't remember because I was drunk.

• 1:12:13Sam Morril?

Comedy, do a comedy after that.

• 1:12:15Mark Normand?

  Yeah, comedy.

• 1:12:17Sam Morril?

Well, your opener, the AIDS joke, I think I'm, one of the first times you tried that, I think I saw you do it. And I was like, oh, that's a great opener because it's so.

• 1:12:26Speaker 02

  I remember you saying that.

• 1:12:26Sam Morril?

It's so silly. And then I hadn't seen until the special, you added it. You go rats. I got it from rats.

• 1:12:33Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:12:34Sam Morril?

  I mean.

• 1:12:35Speaker 02

But there is, that's one that I came up with the best tag after the special, like a week after.

• 1:12:41Mark Normand?

  Ah.

• 1:12:41Speaker 02

Because it's like, oh, rats, that's how I got it. Rats, you can get AIDS from a rat. They don't even have to be gay.

• 1:12:47Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:48Speaker 02

  But this one was gay.

• 1:12:49Mark Normand?

  Ah.

• 1:12:50Speaker 02

And then I added after, well, at least he is now.

• 1:12:55Speaker 02

  And that was.

• 1:12:56Mark Normand?

  That's good.

• 1:12:57Speaker 02

  That's not in the special.

• 1:12:58Mark Normand?

  Damn it.

• 1:12:58Speaker 02

Because I came up with it after.

• 1:13:00Sam Morril?

That's how it goes all the time.

• 1:13:01Mark Normand?

  How it goes.

• 1:13:02Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 1:13:03Mark Normand?

Damn. Boy, I could do this all night, brother. I know you got to those places. You got children.

• 1:13:07Speaker 02

  I got life.

• 1:13:08Mark Normand?

  Ah, boo.

• 1:13:10Speaker 02

  Boo, life.

• 1:13:11Mark Normand?

Well, do you ever have the thing where you're like, how did I write those jokes? The old ones?

• 1:13:15Speaker 02

Of course. You'll never write another one, right?

• 1:13:18Sam Morril?

  Which is, which is.

• 1:13:18Speaker 02

  You'll never write another one.

• 1:13:19Sam Morril?

Which is especially you look back at, you're like, oh, that's my favorite one I did.

• 1:13:23Mark Normand?

Like, how did I do that?

• 1:13:24Speaker 02

  Uh.

• 1:13:27Speaker 02

The one that's called Sorry, that one.

• 1:13:29Mark Normand?

  Oh, really?

• 1:13:30Speaker 02

  Has a run about.

• 1:13:33Mark Normand?

  The elephant?

• 1:13:34Speaker 02

No, but that one's pretty great, but the panty, but the panties, little girls panties that a friend sent to me as a joke.

• 1:13:41Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:13:41Speaker 02

Girls panties, and I'm talking about how I can't get rid of them. Because you can't dispose of them without, you know, I don't want somebody finding them in my garbage. And so I thought about like cutting them into little pieces, throwing them all away in different towns. Went on and on about it. That, that felt like a great special to me, and I guess maybe because it's more recent. I think that the Comedy Store one was really good. I'm proud of that one.

• 1:14:08Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:14:09Speaker 02

I think Shoot Up was really good. Although when I look back at those days, I don't, I think I talked too fast. I was frenetic. I said fuck as a, as a.

• 1:14:21Mark Normand?

  Filler?

• 1:14:22Speaker 02

Too much, yeah. My, I kinda, I try, I, I had a rule with fuck for a few years, which is if it comes out clean, take it out. In other words, that guy's a fucking asshole. Take it out. That guy's an asshole. You know what I mean? But if it's like, I fucked her in the ass, you can't take fuck out. Do you know what I mean?

• 1:14:41Mark Normand?

  You need it.

• 1:14:42Speaker 02

It, it needs to be integral to keep it.

• 1:14:44Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:14:45Speaker 02

  But in the last couple of years, I said, fuck that shit. It's a word. It's a condiment. It's a sound. It's a twang. It's a guitar.

• 1:14:54Mark Normand?

But that's how dialed in you were, where you're thinking about the fuck.

• 1:14:57Speaker 02

Thinking of taking fuck out, but.

• 1:14:59Sam Morril?

That's what you're doing. You're at the top of your game. I think you think maybe you're like, oh, how can I handicap myself?

• 1:15:04Speaker 02

  That's right.

• 1:15:04Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 1:15:05Speaker 02

  That's right.

• 1:15:06Mark Normand?

Man, alright, we could do two hours here. You gotta go take a shit.

• 1:15:10Speaker 02

  New special on Netflix.

• 1:15:11Mark Normand?

There you go. Check it out. Ridiculous.

• 1:15:14Speaker 02

  Please watch it.

• 1:15:14Mark Normand?

On Netflix now. It's great. The Old Folks Home bit. Check that.

• 1:15:18Sam Morril?

Oh, yeah, the, uh, they don't make you show your ID. They're not valuable. That's the line?

• 1:15:24Speaker 02

  Yeah, they're not valuables.

• 1:15:27Speaker 02

Yeah, that was a really fun bit to build.

• 1:15:30Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:30Mark Normand?

And it's gonna be fun doing something and you're like, I'm gonna get a bit out of this. Like you're at the Old Folks Home. There's so much comedy coming at you.

• 1:15:37Speaker 02

Yes, that, that place, uh, I was very hard stressful to be there. I hate visiting my father. And, uh, and I went once, it was. Towards the tail end of the pandemic, it was like you're starting to be okay without masks, but they're still careful. So I went to see him and I'm in his room and I'm like, I just don't want to be, this is horrible. And then the lady comes in and she goes, it's time for dinner. And he goes, can my son come to dinner with me? And she goes, no, no guests at dinner. I'm sorry. And I was like, sorry dad. So then I'm in an elevator with a lady my age. And I said something like, yeah, dinner at six o'clock. We can't stay. And she goes, that's why I always get here at 10 of 6.

• 1:16:16Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 1:16:17Speaker 02

And she wasn't getting, and I was like, damn.

• 1:16:21Sam Morril?

  Jesus Christ.

• 1:16:22Speaker 02

And I realized this is a place that people come to that's really grim and really hard to be in. These, there's bits here. There's, so I started building that.

• 1:16:32Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 1:16:34Sam Morril?

That's such a funny reason to visit your father. Some material here. I'm gonna check it out.

• 1:16:40Speaker 02

  Anyway.

• 1:16:42Mark Normand?

  All right.

• 1:16:42Speaker 02

  All right.

• 1:16:43Mark Normand?

Are you going on the road? Are you taking a breather?

• 1:16:45Speaker 02

I'm taking a long, but I'm not, have no gigs for the foreseeable future.

• 1:16:48Sam Morril?

Go see Louis in the finger painting class near you.

• 1:16:51Speaker 02

  Your gigs, what are those?

• 1:16:53Mark Normand?

I'm doing back in the clubs. I'm trying to build a new hour.

• 1:16:55Speaker 02

  SideSplitters, great club.

• 1:16:57Mark Normand?

Great club, Tampa. Doing something in the Hamptons, one night only, then Cobb's.

• 1:17:03Speaker 02

  Great.

• 1:17:03Mark Normand?

  San Francisco, Houston Improv.

• 1:17:05Speaker 02

  Nice.

• 1:17:06Mark Normand?

Zany's in Nashville, Pittsburgh Improv, uh, some casino in Regina.

• 1:17:11Speaker 02

  Nice.

• 1:17:12Mark Normand?

  Calgary, I love Calgary.

• 1:17:13Speaker 02

  Calgary's great.

• 1:17:14Mark Normand?

  Right. Minneapolis, Acme.

• 1:17:16Speaker 02

  Oh, Acme.

• 1:17:17Sam Morril?

  The best.

• 1:17:18Mark Normand?

  Great.

• 1:17:18Speaker 02

  Louis Lee, great place.

• 1:17:20Mark Normand?

  Hey, you know everybody.

• 1:17:21Speaker 02

  Of course.

• 1:17:21Mark Normand?

Hey, look, how about, how about Denver?

• 1:17:23Speaker 02

  I love the city.

• 1:17:24Mark Normand?

  Uh oh.

• 1:17:25Speaker 02

  Go on.

• 1:17:25Mark Normand?

Uh, Comedy on State? Come on, Madison.

• 1:17:27Speaker 02

  State, great fucking club.

• 1:17:29Mark Normand?

One of the greats. Charlton Music Hall and, uh.

• 1:17:32Sam Morril?

You're canceling all these, by the way, for when we shoot.

• 1:17:34Mark Normand?

Oh yeah, we're working on the movie. And then Cap City in Austin.

• 1:17:37Speaker 02

What movie? What are you talking about?

• 1:17:38Sam Morril?

  We wrote a movie.

• 1:17:38Mark Normand?

We wrote a movie. We're shooting it.

• 1:17:40Speaker 02

  You are?

• 1:17:40Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:41Speaker 02

  That's great.

• 1:17:41Sam Morril?

  Yeah, October.

• 1:17:43Mark Normand?

  We're excited.

• 1:17:44Speaker 02

So you have to cancel some of these gigs?

• 1:17:45Sam Morril?

Some of these, some of them. I just got the Bray Improv, August 21st through 23rd. I got Lisbon, Athens, Budapest, Zagreb.

• 1:17:55Speaker 02

  Is you?

• 1:17:55Sam Morril?

Vienna, Warsaw, Helsinki, Stockholm and Copenhagen. I'll add a bunch of dates coming up soon, but a bunch of new stuff's coming soon and...

• 1:18:04Speaker 02

You gotta go to near Warsaw. What do you call it?

• 1:18:08Sam Morril?

  Krakow?

• 1:18:09Speaker 02

  Yeah, Krakow's great.

• 1:18:10Sam Morril?

I gotta go. I don't have time on this trip. I'm gonna go for sure. I really wanna go there.

• 1:18:13Speaker 02

Good, man. You're doing the other concerts.

• 1:18:15Sam Morril?

  Love it.

• 1:18:16Speaker 02

  That's good.

• 1:18:17Sam Morril?

I love it, man. Well, good to see you. Congratulations.

• 1:18:19Speaker 02

When are you back in New York doing this hour? I wanna see you do a new hour.

• 1:18:22Mark Normand?

  Oh, it's not ready yet.

• 1:18:24Speaker 02

  What?

• 1:18:24Mark Normand?

  Give it to me.

• 1:18:25Speaker 02

  That's what I wanna, that's what I wanna see.

• 1:18:26Mark Normand?

I'm embarrassed. I'm trying to do stories now and it's ugly.

• 1:18:29Speaker 02

  Oh, I wanna see that.

• 1:18:30Mark Normand?

  It's sloppy and clunky.

• 1:18:32Speaker 02

  No, I heard it's good.

• 1:18:35Mark Normand?

I need some endings. I need some punches in the middle.

• 1:18:37Speaker 02

  Maybe not.

• 1:18:38Mark Normand?

  Yeah?

• 1:18:38Speaker 02

  Maybe not.

• 1:18:39Sam Morril?

We'll get back on this thing.

• 1:18:40Mark Normand?

  Yeah, we'll start right.

• 1:18:41Speaker 02

What about you? One of you in the area?

• 1:18:43Sam Morril?

I'm not. I just taped, so my shit's really, my shit's really not ready. I got like, I got like a passable cellar set right now. That's new, but that's, you know, but, but yeah, I wanna build to... I'd love a new 30 by the time this comes out, if I can get to 30.

• 1:18:56Speaker 02

  That'd be nice.

• 1:18:57Sam Morril?

Yeah, so that's my goal, but...

• 1:18:59Speaker 02

It's great when you get a new hour. It feels like you just strapped on some guns.

• 1:19:03Mark Normand?

  Yeah, exactly.

• 1:19:04Speaker 02

We just said this, yeah. You can go heels.

• 1:19:06Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:19:07Speaker 02

It's like you're just naked without it.

• 1:19:09Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 1:19:10Speaker 02

But once you have the hour, it's like I can go to any venue on the planet.

• 1:19:15Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:19:15Speaker 02

  And put on a show.

• 1:19:16Mark Normand?

  Exactly.

• 1:19:17Speaker 02

Like, literally, there isn't, that was the craziest feeling when I got to that of like, there's literally not a building with seats in it that I can't go Royal Albert Hall, can I do a stadium here, wherever? Where it was like, there is just anywhere.

• 1:19:30Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 1:19:31Speaker 02

And once you have the hour, you just go, I don't know, go over here.

• 1:19:34Mark Normand?

  Spin a globe.

• 1:19:35Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:19:36Sam Morril?

  Well, I'm not there yet.

• 1:19:37Speaker 02

  But, yeah.

• 1:19:38Sam Morril?

  Working on it.

• 1:19:39Speaker 02

But I could do any club in the Northeast.

• 1:19:44Mark Normand?

Are you gonna run out of money? You okay on money?

• 1:19:46Speaker 02

I mean, that's, you know, no, I spend too, I spend it too much, yeah. But the Netflix is nice.

• 1:19:52Mark Normand?

All right, good, good, good. Just making sure. You got the hat on? I don't know what's going on with your funny.

• 1:19:59Speaker 02

  You think I was advertising?

• 1:20:04Sam Morril?

Louis started talking about Ford towards the end of the... It's a really good vehicle.

• 1:20:08Speaker 02

  Really good car.

• 1:20:11Mark Normand?

  Thank you, guys.

• 1:20:12Speaker 02

  Alright, guys, thanks.

• 1:20:59Speaker 03

Now, more than ever, we need someone on our side. But Rob Whitman? Whitman's votes drove up costs, cut Medicaid, and risked 350,000 Virginians' health care to pay for tax breaks for himself and his donors. He's not on our side. Shannon Taylor will fight corruption, cut taxes, and bring down costs. This November, vote for Shannon Taylor. She's for us. Paid for by HMP, the HouseMajorityPac.com.
