• 1:06Jessie Ware?

Hello and welcome to Table manners. I'm Jessie Ware and I'm here at Ernie's.

• 1:10Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:11Jessie Ware?

I've been busy working on my face.

• 1:13Speaker 03

  I saw that, darling.

• 1:15Jessie Ware?

  I had a laser.

• 1:16Speaker 03

  Why did you do that?

• 1:17Jessie Ware?

Because I want to have everlasting youth. Why wouldn't you want that? I went to see Jasmine, my facialist, and I got this laser done. And I looked mental after it. And then I went and had the sperm under your eye.

• 1:34Speaker 03

Is that where you normally put sperm?

• 1:36Jessie Ware?

Jesus, mother. No, it's polyneucleotides. It's trout sperm. And my friend had to Google how they extract the sperm. And so my eyes looked slightly puffy.

• 1:48Speaker 03

And there's some poor trout there that didn't get what he was expecting.

• 1:52Jessie Ware?

Oh, hell. He's now on my face.

• 1:58Jessie Ware?

Anyway, we have Felicity Jones on the podcast today, who is probably going to be up for an Oscar.

• 2:06Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:06Jessie Ware?

  Is already up for BAFTA.

• 2:08Speaker 03

  We both watched The Brutalist.

• 2:10Jessie Ware?

  We both watched The Brutalist.

• 2:11Speaker 03

And it is a wonderful, fantastic, marvellous film.

• 2:15Jessie Ware?

  It's epic, it's tragic, it's beautiful, it's...

• 2:19Speaker 03

  Touching.

• 2:19Jessie Ware?

Yeah, it's a lot and it feels so grand. Some of the shots are just stunning. I mean, most of the shots are stunning. It was all shot on film and it just had this beautiful quality to it. So it's about Adrian Brody's character, Lazlo Toff, moving to America post-

• 2:38Speaker 03

  Having survived the concentration camps.

• 2:40Jessie Ware?

Boukenvold. And it's about him trying to get his family, his wife, who Felicity plays, and his niece, who Rafi Cassidy plays, over to America to start a new life where, you know, it feels like it will be limitless and prosperous. He's this amazing architect. He's kind of revolutionary, pioneering.

• 3:04Speaker 03

He's a brutalist, studied at the Bauhaus.

• 3:06Jessie Ware?

You've got to go and watch it. But basically, I'm a fan of Felicity. I think she's an amazing actress. I was a fan of her in Chalet Girl.

• 3:14Speaker 03

  Me too.

• 3:15Jessie Ware?

  Loved Chalet Girl.

• 3:16Speaker 03

All I remember is Emma Grundy.

• 3:18Jessie Ware?

  Do you?

• 3:18Speaker 03

  Emma Grundy, yes.

• 3:19Jessie Ware?

  On The Archers.

• 3:20Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 3:21Jessie Ware?

Actually, I was in Paris with her probably a decade ago. I'm trying to remember when we were there together. So kind of known her for a while, but haven't seen her for years. And very excited to have Felicity Jones come on, talk about The Brutalist, talk about her career, talk about food. And what have you made?

• 3:40Speaker 03

An onion and anchovy tart. Well, it's not a tart, it's called a pisal- Pisaladier. Pisaladier, which I think we made when we went to Leith's cookery school, darling. It's kind of like an open flanny thing on pastry.

• 3:57Jessie Ware?

  Oh, yeah.

• 3:58Speaker 03

  I don't know what it's gonna be like. I hope it's okay.

• 4:01Jessie Ware?

Well, um, I've made with it, which now I'm thinking is probably a bit silly, um. I've made something with shallots on. I've done a potato salad.

• 4:10Speaker 03

Did you hear me when I said I was making an onion tart?

• 4:13Jessie Ware?

Yeah, but you're doing like caramelised onions and so I did shallot.

• 4:16Speaker 03

  Onion on onion.

• 4:17Jessie Ware?

Yeah, okay, fine. Well, it's done now, isn't it? Um, and then, um, I've done, yes, I've done a potato salad, kind of French potato salad with shallots, cut up very small. Um, that I've run underwater. I didn't realise that that was a trick to get rid of the kind of oomph of them. But they're still pretty oomphy.

• 4:34Speaker 03

You can peel them underwater or run water when you're peeling them and it's supposed to take the.

• 4:39Jessie Ware?

Well, I just chop them and then put them in. So anyway, I've probably done it wrong, but whatever. Um, they still taste quite pungent.

• 4:45Speaker 03

Is there onion in the other salad?

• 4:46Jessie Ware?

  No.

• 4:47Speaker 03

  Oh.

• 4:48Jessie Ware?

In the other salad, it's shaved fennel and celery with parmesan and a dressing quite similar, but with some garlic. That you actually put the garlic in and then you take the garlic out 10 minutes later, which I think is very clever.

• 4:58Speaker 03

  Infused.

• 4:59Jessie Ware?

So it's infused, but it's not like as pungent because poor, poor Felicity's got to do the one show later.

• 5:04Speaker 03

  I've got Tic Tacs upstairs.

• 5:06Jessie Ware?

I don't think Tic Tacs are gonna cut it, Mum. She's having onion on onion.

• 5:09Speaker 03

Eating parsley stops the smell of garlic.

• 5:12Jessie Ware?

So anyway, we, that's what we're doing. And then for pudding, my three-year-old has come up trumped again. And has made an apple and cinnamon cake that he made for the family and everyone loved. So I said, mate, can you get me another one of them on the go? And so he made it yesterday. He may be our new pastry chef.

• 5:29Speaker 03

  I know.

• 5:30Jessie Ware?

I mean, let's face it, it's my wonderful nanny helping him, but he loves it. Oh my God. Speaking of children, I, I'm just gonna put this out here. And I accept that this is a very motherland situation and I wanna cringe with everyone.

• 5:44Jessie Ware?

Last week I went out with my lovely friends from my son's year one class, like a few of them, like some couples. And we haven't really gone out all together. We were just at a local place. And my gorgeous friend next to me said something and I misheard. I thought she said, he's smart, isn't he? And I went, he's incredibly smart. Yeah, he's quite brilliant. And she went, no, no, his birthday's in March, right? And I went, oh God, oh God. God. I'm dying and I'm putting it out there to let you know that I am dying and it was so motherland and I was Amanda and I hate myself for mishearing her. But yeah, my son is clever. It was too bad.

• 6:28Speaker 03

Can I just ask you, do you want me to put some tomatoes in a bowl to add? Just so it's red and I bought a bread.

• 6:34Jessie Ware?

  What are the tomatoes for?

• 6:35Speaker 03

  I just thought.

• 6:36Jessie Ware?

  Have you got any basil?

• 6:37Speaker 03

  No.

• 6:38Jessie Ware?

  Have I asked you that?

• 6:39Speaker 03

You've asked me three times now. Have you got memory loss?

• 6:41Jessie Ware?

Anyway, Felicity Jones coming up on 10 minutes.

• 6:53Jessie Ware?

Felicity Jones, you've just come in. You are open to the creme mon. We appreciate that. Cheers.

• 6:58Speaker 04

I like a little creme mon.

• 6:59Speaker 03

Cheers to the bruce list and your fabulous part and your success.

• 7:03Speaker 04

  Oh, thank you very much.

• 7:05Jessie Ware?

And to seeing you again after all these years.

• 7:07Speaker 04

  Have a sip.

• 7:07Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, let's do it.

• 7:10Jessie Ware?

What, your whistle, is that what we say?

• 7:11Speaker 04

Apparently it's bad luck if you cheers and you don't sip.

• 7:14Jessie Ware?

Oh, really? Are you superstitious, Felicity?

• 7:16Speaker 04

  Uh, yeah, I am actually.

• 7:18Jessie Ware?

So come on, tell me some other things that you're superstitious about.

• 7:21Speaker 04

Um, I don't like walking on cracks in pavements. Yeah, no, I am very. I mean, it's trying to find some control in a world of chaos, isn't it?

• 7:30Jessie Ware?

Did you, did you get more suspicious as you became a more successful actress? Was it more like you were like, if I step on that crack, I'm not gonna get road one?

• 7:39Speaker 04

You just get more insecure. Well, I think you just get more insecure as you get older, don't you? I feel like, oh, well, flying, I used to never have a problem going in an aeroplane and now I'm like listening to meditation apps. I'm jittery. I don't know. I think it's having children. I think suddenly your perceived sense of danger is so much stronger.

• 7:59Jessie Ware?

So it's not flying with your children? Because I know that's quite stressful.

• 8:01Speaker 04

That's a whole other side of danger that, um, that is definitely not relaxing. I know my husband, um, has gone away for work and is on a plane and he was like, oh my goodness, flying without children. It's a whole other experience. It's actually pleasurable.

• 8:18Jessie Ware?

You can watch all your films.

• 8:19Speaker 04

I know. You can sit down for more than five minutes.

• 8:24Jessie Ware?

  Yep.

• 8:24Speaker 03

But you must be all over the place anyway.

• 8:27Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 8:27Speaker 03

  So.

• 8:30Speaker 03

No, but when you're, but if you're filming, you're clearly, did you film The Brutalist in America?

• 8:37Speaker 04

We shot it in Hungary, in Budapest, but it is actually set in, um, in Philadelphia.

• 8:43Jessie Ware?

  Oh, forza.

• 8:44Speaker 04

  I have to think that.

• 8:44Speaker 03

And you filmed it all in Hungary?

• 8:47Speaker 04

So we shot, yeah, we shot the whole thing, seven weeks, eight weeks, yeah, cheaper. You get more bang for your buck in, um, in Hungary than you do in the States.

• 8:55Speaker 03

So what did you do? Where did you live in Hungary?

• 8:57Speaker 04

So I was living in, in Budapest.

• 9:00Speaker 03

  In a flat?

• 9:01Speaker 04

And you have to say Budapest.

• 9:02Jessie Ware?

  Well.

• 9:02Speaker 04

  You can't say Budapest.

• 9:03Speaker 03

  Well, you're an excellent.

• 9:05Speaker 04

So, yeah, particularly after this film, I have to get it right.

• 9:08Speaker 03

What was your name in the film? Just Elizabeth.

• 9:11Speaker 04

Erzgebet, which is a Hungarian version of Elizabeth.

• 9:15Speaker 03

Yeah, you have the same dialect coach as my daughter who acts it, Tanara.

• 9:21Speaker 04

  Tanara, yeah, who's brilliant.

• 9:22Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 9:23Speaker 04

Who actually, I, I've started working with on The Brutalist and have worked with twice since.

• 9:28Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 9:29Speaker 04

She has somehow that, working with her, I've just have found accents, I've sort of been liberated by working with her. I've just found it so much easier.

• 9:38Speaker 03

  She's fab.

• 9:39Jessie Ware?

So, so are we allowed to know what the next other accents, you don't have to say the films, but what are the other accents that you've had to learn?

• 9:45Speaker 04

Well, I've been doing, um, I did a ensemble Christmas comedy over the summer holidays with Michelle Pfeiffer, the formidable, amazing Michelle Pfeiffer, playing, um, she plays the mother and it's about a family and it's a version of Home Alone where we forget our mum and leave her at home rather than a young boy.

• 10:05Speaker 03

  Oh, fun.

• 10:07Speaker 04

And so for that I was doing an American accent.

• 10:10Jessie Ware?

So will that be coming out this Christmas?

• 10:11Speaker 04

And that'll be coming out this Christmas.

• 10:13Jessie Ware?

Oh, that's, I mean, it's been a long time since we've seen you, like with Snow, Chalet Girl, you know?

• 10:17Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 10:18Jessie Ware?

  I loved Chalet Girl.

• 10:19Speaker 04

I did as well. Well, thank you. Actually, for Oh What Fun, the name of the film, we were shooting in Atlanta and it was searingly hot, boiling hot.

• 10:30Jessie Ware?

  In the summer.

• 10:31Speaker 04

And we were having to put on these woolen jumpers and extra coats and kind of sweating underneath. So, um, yes.

• 10:39Jessie Ware?

Do, um, because I'm just trying, when did you film The Brutalist?

• 10:43Speaker 04

Um, so we shot The Brutalist in.

• 10:48Speaker 04

Twenty, oh god, I have to think now, twenty twenty two, twenty twenty two.

• 10:52Jessie Ware?

So you just had a baby?

• 10:53Speaker 04

So I had, I'd had Beatrice, no, let me get this right, my mind's a bit soupy, but, so twenty twenty three. Um, we shot The Brutalist, and actually that was the year of my daughter's birth, was twenty twenty two.

• 11:06Jessie Ware?

  Right.

• 11:07Speaker 04

It's just why it's a big day in my head. But yes, twenty twenty three, we shot The Brutalist, it was around April.

• 11:15Jessie Ware?

And, and you were filming on film?

• 11:17Speaker 04

We shot on film, um, which was, you know, Brady's ambition from the very, Brady, Paul Bay, the director.

• 11:25Jessie Ware?

  I think it's stunning.

• 11:26Speaker 04

Oh, it's always so beautiful to watch. Whenever I'm watching something, I'll be on, you know, whatever it is, and I'll go, this looks really lovely. What, and then you'll look and check on IMDb and it's, it's usually been shot on film.

• 11:37Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 11:37Speaker 04

It makes such a massive difference.

• 11:39Jessie Ware?

But how many, how many takes did you, was it a bit like, listen, you get two goes of each scene? Or what, like how, because that shit's expensive.

• 11:48Speaker 04

Yeah, I mean, we were pretty, uh, well, I, you, we knew from talking to Brady, I mean, not only, it was such an ambitious project. And so, um, so personal in some ways to Brady and Mona, his wife.

• 12:02Jessie Ware?

  Right.

• 12:02Speaker 04

They wrote the screenplay together. Yeah, it's a husband-wife team. That we knew that it was, uh, it was important that we knew exactly what we were doing before we got, got to set. And I'd have these conversations with Brady, because actually I was signed on to do the film two years before we shot. And the film had been through, you know, such a struggle to actually get it made and it'd fallen apart. And then come together and I came on in twenty twenty two. And both Stacy and Rafi were both on then, so it was the three of us. And so I'd had two years to really meditate on it, think about it, prepare, get my head in the right place to play Erjabet.

• 12:46Speaker 04

And then before we started, obviously before we started shooting, um, Adrian Brody came on board and Guy Pearce. And then obviously with them, it was all, it was all good to go. But having had that time, I, I felt really I needed that prep. Yeah, because it was, it was one of the most challenging things I've done. I mean, apart from Shani Girl, which was the other. Immensely challenging role. You wouldn't put those roles together, but actually, they both kind of weirdly demanded.

• 13:14Speaker 03

  What did Challey Girl demand?

• 13:16Speaker 04

I had to learn how to snowboard.

• 13:18Speaker 03

Snowboard? Yes, that's a good point.

• 13:20Speaker 04

  Yeah, from.

• 13:21Speaker 03

Have you ever done it since?

• 13:22Speaker 04

Um, I, I did do it a bit and I went not long after I'd shot Challey Girl and in my head, I thought it was going to be so good. I had this idea and then I got up there and then we went up, I went with my husband and we went up with, um, with a teacher.

• 13:39Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 13:39Speaker 04

And I was like, I've got this, I've got this. And then the moment I sort of came off the lift, like wobbled and fell flat on my face. And then consequently throughout the whole time, kept falling over. And after that, I, um, I'd done a little bit of skiing when I was younger, so I went back to skiing.

• 13:54Speaker 03

Why was it so personal to Brady and his wife to write the film?

• 13:59Speaker 04

Um, the film, they've spoken about this, in some ways for them, this film is about making a film. And they had had a film project that was enormously difficult, which was a struggle in the same way that Adrian Brody's character is struggling to put his artistic vision in the world.

• 14:17Speaker 03

  Right.

• 14:18Speaker 04

They had had something similar, but they thought, it's not that interesting, making a film about making a film, let's put it into a different world. And, um, both of them, I think this was right, have had architects in their family and they're both interested in architecture. Um, and so they, yeah, then they found this story that actually on reading it, when I read the script, I thought it was, as many people have thought similarly, that it was a real story.

• 14:46Speaker 03

  Me too.

• 14:47Speaker 04

And that they were real people.

• 14:48Speaker 03

But there must be someone real there.

• 14:51Speaker 04

They're, they're an amalgamation of lots of different people and people's experience who actually lived. But this story is, is, is a, is a fiction, but it's obviously informed by real events and real people.

• 15:05Jessie Ware?

Can we take it back to growing up in Birmingham?

• 15:08Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 15:08Jessie Ware?

Who was around the dinner table and what were you eating?

• 15:11Speaker 04

Well, growing up, food and eating was a big part of my family life. Both my mother and my father are tremendous cooks and there's always been an emphasis on um family. They both, my m- mother was one of three, my father's one of four. Big emphasis on big family meals together. Um, my mum actually did um Christmas lunch, um just gone, which was really tasty and there's nothing like having your mother's cooking. It is that, I don't know what it is, it's just, it's somehow healing in some way. Um, so I'm very lucky.

• 15:50Speaker 03

Strangely, Jessie doesn't feel like that.

• 15:52Jessie Ware?

I know, I did think I was getting like blank stares looking back at you.

• 15:56Speaker 04

  I'm like, yeah.

• 15:56Jessie Ware?

Literally. No, you're, I love your, I love your food.

• 15:59Speaker 03

  We do a lot of.

• 16:00Jessie Ware?

I just get it every week, which I'm very lucky.

• 16:02Speaker 04

Yes, yeah, the more sparing it is then the more you'd probably appreciate it.

• 16:07Jessie Ware?

What was, what was your favourite dish that your mum made when you were younger, or your dad?

• 16:10Speaker 04

So, um, my mum would do a lovely upside down apricot pudding.

• 16:16Jessie Ware?

  Oh.

• 16:17Speaker 04

Which was, which she still does now and I'll come and I'll say, can you do the upside down apricot pudding?

• 16:22Speaker 03

  We need the recipe, yeah.

• 16:23Speaker 04

Which is from, my mum had this collection of sort of ancient eighties cookbooks, you know, all the ones where you're looking through and you think, I'm not sure the images make the food look that appetising.

• 16:35Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 16:36Speaker 04

Back in the day and everything's brown.

• 16:37Jessie Ware?

  Yes.

• 16:38Speaker 03

It's Robert Carrière and family project, yeah.

• 16:41Jessie Ware?

  Um. Lots of illustrations.

• 16:44Speaker 04

Lot illustrations and I love, I love going back home and seeing her cookbooks and they're all covered in bits, you know, you can see they've been used food and um and whatnot. So that's my particular favourite of hers and then I got my um parents were separated, so I would spend every other weekend with my father and he is also a great cook and he does a fantastic, I mean, he's from Italian heritage and so there's always lots of pasta. And he does a great um pasta with salami and parmesan.

• 17:17Jessie Ware?

  Ooh, ooh, that sounds good.

• 17:19Speaker 04

You know, so almost like a carbonara but with um salami and rosemary. Oh, lovely. It's a great one.

• 17:27Jessie Ware?

Is it creamy or is it kind of drier?

• 17:29Speaker 04

Well, if it go, cause I do it and I can never get it as quite as good as he does it. And it's because it goes too dry and the key is that you keep the moisture in it. Um, and so that comes from, it's that thing like a carbonari, just it's the egg, it's putting the egg in and it not scrambling.

• 17:48Jessie Ware?

  And the pasta water.

• 17:49Speaker 04

  So, yes, exactly.

• 17:50Jessie Ware?

  To emulsify.

• 17:51Speaker 04

That's it, and that gives you the liquidity.

• 17:54Speaker 03

Yeah, I mean, Tom Carriage gave us a tip that if you want to make things like more liquid, just put water in. You don't have to put loads of cream in or butter, just put some water in. I think it's a really good tip, don't you?

• 18:06Jessie Ware?

  Was that for your labna?

• 18:08Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, I made labna and I, I thought it was, Jessie thought it was too stiff and wanted to put olive oil in and I didn't. And he said, well, you can just put more water in.

• 18:16Speaker 04

Cause sometimes you think water is sort of the enemy of cooking.

• 18:19Speaker 03

  No, no, it isn't.

• 18:19Speaker 04

Actually, yes, in the right, in the right way.

• 18:22Speaker 03

Pasta for pasta, you always use the, the water for that.

• 18:25Speaker 04

Uh, yeah, amazing how many really simple pasta dishes use that, that pasta water.

• 18:31Jessie Ware?

Yeah. Would, are you hungry? Would you like something to eat?

• 18:33Speaker 04

Yeah, I was actually wondering when, when I was going to get to eat.

• 18:37Jessie Ware?

Whilst mum sorts that, so, yeah, we're just gonna get you drunk, Felicity. Um, but so where did you come in your four sibling, well, the, in the four of you?

• 18:46Speaker 04

So I, yes, so I'm, uh, my older brother, um, who I work with, who I have a production company with. And then it's me and then I have two younger half brother, two younger half siblings and a half sister and a half brother.

• 19:00Jessie Ware?

So did your brother see when you got your gig on The Worst Witch and he was thought, that looks like a good gig? I wanna work within this. Or were you inspired by your brother being passionate about TV film?

• 19:13Speaker 04

Yeah, I mean, cinema was just such a big part of our household. We, uh. Um, my mother was a, is a cinephile and my father's a loves music and. I think between those, between the music and the cinema, that fusion is what my brother and I inherited. You know, that made us wanna go into the business. And I think it was going to the cinema. Watching films and theatre as well, actually, that was a big, oh, this looks yummy.

• 19:42Jessie Ware?

  I mean, it's kind of.

• 19:43Speaker 04

  So who's cooked this?

• 19:44Jessie Ware?

We've kind of done a bit of a joint effort today. Um, so mum's made the main and I've done the sides and I apologize because I know you're on the one show later, so you're gonna have to get some gum. Cause there's a lot of onion.

• 19:56Speaker 04

Oh, good. I was gonna say garlic, which is quite good if you've got a hole.

• 20:00Jessie Ware?

There's a, there's a little bit of garlic, but I've tried to avoid the garlic more because, you know, when it like starts being very, very. It just keeps on giving. Hopefully you won't get that today. So, yeah, so mum's made. Mum, do you wanna say what you've made or should I say?

• 20:15Jessie Ware?

You know, the French onion tart that you have with caramelized onions and anchovies and all that? Mum's made that. And then we've got like a chèf fennel, celery, parmesan, lemony salad for crunch and then. Tater salad. So it's kind of quite light.

• 20:31Speaker 04

  Yeah, lovely.

• 20:32Jessie Ware?

  Cause you've been.

• 20:33Speaker 04

  Almost quite summery.

• 20:34Jessie Ware?

  Almost.

• 20:35Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 20:36Jessie Ware?

And then my three-year-old's made good. He's made an apple cinnamon cake for us.

• 20:41Speaker 04

  Oh, lovely.

• 20:42Jessie Ware?

He made yesterday because it went down well the day before. So I was like, well, maybe.

• 20:45Speaker 04

  Very good for a three-year-old.

• 20:46Jessie Ware?

I mean, he's, it's my nanny majority, but.

• 20:49Speaker 04

Little help, a little help on the side.

• 20:51Jessie Ware?

He does like chefing. So, yeah, so that's.

• 20:53Speaker 04

  They love cooking, don't they?

• 20:54Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, they do.

• 20:55Speaker 04

They like, or they like participating. Thank you very much.

• 20:58Speaker 03

  I've cut it up, so.

• 21:00Speaker 04

  Oh, delicious.

• 21:01Speaker 03

  Do you need?

• 21:03Speaker 04

  Right.

• 21:04Jessie Ware?

So I, I saw your top drawer.

• 21:07Speaker 04

  Mmm.

• 21:08Jessie Ware?

And you seem like. You're you're a foodie.

• 21:11Speaker 04

  Um, very much, yeah.

• 21:12Jessie Ware?

Um, you live in West London. Um, but you were giving, you were breaking the rules by going out of West London, which I kind of loved that you did that.

• 21:20Speaker 04

Well, I thought it was too hard. You know, I, there's just, there were some greats that I I had to get in there.

• 21:27Jessie Ware?

What's your order? Uh, is it the Punjab Palace?

• 21:31Speaker 04

Punjabi Palace, which is in the Midlands.

• 21:33Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 21:34Speaker 04

Which um was great when we were growing up.

• 21:36Speaker 03

I have to say Birmingham is probably the best place for curry, I think.

• 21:40Speaker 04

  Best place in the world.

• 21:41Jessie Ware?

Yeah. So what's your order at the Punjabi Palace?

• 21:44Speaker 04

  Prawn curry.

• 21:45Jessie Ware?

What kind of prawn curry? Like, prawn dancer?

• 21:49Speaker 04

  I love a prawn booner.

• 21:50Speaker 03

  I knew it.

• 21:51Speaker 04

  Great minds.

• 21:53Jessie Ware?

  That Birmingham connection.

• 21:54Speaker 04

  Yes, exactly. Prawn booner.

• 21:57Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 21:58Speaker 04

I know, I was desperate. Well, I was desperate to do Peaky Blinders and Tom, who directed it, who I did um. The Aeronauts with, I was like, come on, Tom, come on, you've got, you know, you've got a willing actor here. Cause I just, I would have loved to have done the film, they did the film with the Peaky, they've done it.

• 22:15Speaker 03

It elevated Birmingham and the Brummie accent.

• 22:18Speaker 04

I listened to it and I know, I'm like, that's not right, that's right, that's not right, that's right. Yeah.

• 22:25Jessie Ware?

You didn't get the call. This is so annoying.

• 22:28Speaker 04

  I know.

• 22:28Jessie Ware?

They can't even get you now.

• 22:29Speaker 04

  I know.

• 22:31Jessie Ware?

You know, probably Oscar, they'll find out tomorrow, don't they?

• 22:33Speaker 04

  Oscar nominated, come on.

• 22:35Speaker 03

  Did you act at school?

• 22:36Speaker 04

Did I act at school? Uh, do you know what? My main acting was from, I went to Central Junior Television Workshop. Which was, um, my father at the time was a producer, television producer at Central Television. And they had an amazing drama group.

• 22:55Jessie Ware?

  Right.

• 22:55Speaker 04

That was funded by Central Television and it was open to the entire city. And they, exactly, and Nottingham had the same one, and it's when these companies had this other side to them. Uh, which makes total sense, because when they were casting for TV programmes and things, they had a a children's drama group. And that really was, I'd done um, a drama group before that, The Custard Factory, so I'd got, I was really passionate about it at a young age. But then at Central Junior Television Workshop, I had a great, great teacher there, Colin Edwards, and um, he just gave us the, the launch, really. He ran this group and it was after school on a Thursday, I think, and I would go there every Thursday, and through that

• 23:40Speaker 04

I um, had the audition for The Archers.

• 23:43Speaker 03

  How old were you?

• 23:44Speaker 04

I think I started that when I was about eleven or twelve.

• 23:48Speaker 03

When she was little Emma Grundy.

• 23:50Speaker 04

  Yes, tiny Emma Grundy.

• 23:52Speaker 03

Have you gone back and met any of the people that play you now?

• 23:56Speaker 04

  No.

• 23:56Speaker 03

Because Emma's just had a big moment.

• 23:58Speaker 04

No, I, I, you know what, I listen every, so, yeah, I really like having um, the re, when I'm cooking, actually.

• 24:04Speaker 03

And she was outstanding when she, the whole thing.

• 24:08Speaker 04

  Are you a big fan?

• 24:08Speaker 03

  Oh, I love it.

• 24:09Speaker 04

I know, I could sense some evolved knowledge, yeah. Yeah, it's um, well, actually, my mother listens to it as well, so it really reminds me of her when I'm in the kitchen.

• 24:20Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 24:20Speaker 04

  I'll put it on.

• 24:21Jessie Ware?

What, they're like the Sunday Omniverse?

• 24:22Speaker 04

Yeah, exactly, just the noise of the radio is so homely about it, yeah.

• 24:37Jessie Ware?

I wanted to ask you, if you were coming around to yours, what would Felicity Jones be, be um, I'll, I'll let my three-year-old know. Um, oh, bless him, is it dry? We'll find out. In a minute, cinnamon, apple and cinnamon cake, that's kind of had things drizzled into it, let's see.

• 24:55Speaker 03

  Ooh.

• 24:56Jessie Ware?

  Oh, moist, moist.

• 24:58Speaker 03

  Moist, and.

• 24:59Jessie Ware?

But, uh, yeah, if we were coming round, what would you be cooking for us?

• 25:05Speaker 04

If you came round to me, I would probably, I'd probably do crisps. As a starter.

• 25:13Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 25:14Speaker 04

  In a bowl.

• 25:15Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 25:15Speaker 04

Maybe if you were lucky with a little um salami or something.

• 25:21Jessie Ware?

  Oh.

• 25:21Speaker 04

  And some olives.

• 25:22Jessie Ware?

  Lovely.

• 25:23Speaker 04

And then I would probably most likely do a pasta and I do really like, it's very simple. Prawns, garlic and um baby tomatoes in a white wine chili sauce.

• 25:36Jessie Ware?

And how do you get rid of the kind of the garlic, I mean, is it quite, is everyone going home like?

• 25:41Speaker 04

  I like a punchy garlic.

• 25:43Jessie Ware?

Okay, so you don't mind that everyone's gonna go home and the vampires won't be visiting that night?

• 25:47Speaker 04

  Um, don't mind at all.

• 25:48Jessie Ware?

Do you cut your tomatoes up?

• 25:50Speaker 03

  The cherry tomatoes?

• 25:52Speaker 04

Cherry tomatoes and I will, I'll try and put them in whole actually because. You know when they get a little bit tender and then you want the explosion of the tomato in your mouth. Whereas if you cut them up, then it's not quite the same. But the tomatoes I will put um in the oven with the garlic and olive oil and just let them sort of roast.

• 26:14Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 26:15Speaker 04

And then do the prawns separately on, on the hob um with a little olive oil, garlic, chili. Um and then I'll tend to do a spaghetti and then with the pasta water and then mix them all together.

• 26:31Jessie Ware?

  Sounds delicious.

• 26:32Speaker 04

  And then, yeah.

• 26:33Jessie Ware?

Is that, is that creamy or is that the main?

• 26:37Speaker 04

  That's the main.

• 26:38Jessie Ware?

  And you're doing a salad?

• 26:39Speaker 04

It's pretty, it's pretty simple and then I would, I would probably do a rocket salad with some Parmesan.

• 26:45Jessie Ware?

I think that sounds delicious and you know what, I never do pasta when people come over and I always love it if someone feeds it to me.

• 26:53Speaker 03

  I'm not confident.

• 26:54Jessie Ware?

I'm not confident with it either.

• 26:56Speaker 04

  It's delicious.

• 26:57Jessie Ware?

  I know.

• 26:57Speaker 03

  It did well, didn't it?

• 26:58Jessie Ware?

Mmm. Yeah. Pudding, you sweet person, I mean, you talked about the apricot upside down coke.

• 27:04Speaker 04

  Um, which is delightful.

• 27:07Jessie Ware?

  Have you ever served that?

• 27:08Speaker 04

I, do you know what, I haven't actually cooked it myself. So that maybe I should do it when my mum comes around, she's coming around this weekend.

• 27:16Jessie Ware?

  Oh, nice.

• 27:16Speaker 04

Maybe I should surprise her with some apricot upside down pudding. Now, I'll usually do um, I like to just freestyle on the pudding and do a chocolate mousse.

• 27:27Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 27:28Speaker 04

With chocolate flake. Um sprinkled on top, maybe some strawberries and raspberries. Possibly, sometimes you can do hot berries, cooked, um we've got this flavoured rhubarb vodka. And you can cook the um uh frozen raspberries or whatever fruits. Cook them in the hob and add the rhubarb vodka and it's really nice, makes almost, you know, like a little sauce to put with the chocolate mousse. Nice.

• 27:57Speaker 03

So if you go to the Oscars, which I'm sure you will be, who will go with you?

• 28:04Speaker 04

  That's a good question.

• 28:05Speaker 03

Your husband or? Here at home looking after the kids.

• 28:07Speaker 04

My fa- everyone will have to fight it to the death to work out who is gonna be the, who is gonna be the guest.

• 28:14Speaker 03

  Who went last time?

• 28:15Speaker 04

Last time, oh, actually, last time, my mother and my father and my brother, my eldest brother.

• 28:23Speaker 03

  Oh, great.

• 28:24Speaker 04

My little younger brother and sister were too young.

• 28:26Speaker 03

What are you wearing? Who's dressing you?

• 28:29Speaker 04

Who am I wearing? I'm not sure quite yet.

• 28:31Jessie Ware?

She doesn't know whether she's going yet, mum, because she doesn't know if she's up for supporting actress yet.

• 28:36Speaker 03

But they go anyway, they get invited anyway if you're part of the film.

• 28:40Speaker 04

We don't want to jinx it.

• 28:42Jessie Ware?

No. Oh, she's superstitious, let's not do this, let's not talk about it.

• 28:45Speaker 03

  Golden Globes.

• 28:47Speaker 04

  Um, I wore Prada.

• 28:51Speaker 03

  Stunning.

• 28:52Speaker 04

  Prada.

• 28:53Jessie Ware?

  Paddy.

• 28:54Speaker 04

Prada. I wore me Prada. Got me Prada out.

• 28:59Speaker 03

Did you like your outfits on in the bootlist? That hat.

• 29:04Speaker 04

Um, the wig, I'm trying to remember, I loved the wig, yeah, I loved the outfits, yeah, I always, I, that's quite a process.

• 29:12Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 29:12Speaker 04

Going through everything and figuring out what are we saying with this dress, particularly with Ersabet, who. You know, is someone who's gonna make a statement with what she's wearing. It was quite key finding the right.

• 29:25Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 29:26Speaker 04

The right outfit for the scene.

• 29:28Jessie Ware?

When she talks about like getting her hair done, she's like, and she's just trying to make him look at her.

• 29:33Speaker 04

So human, isn't it? And they haven't seen each other for such a long time and they've been through this horrendous trauma.

• 29:40Speaker 03

How do you ever make it up, that, that loss of time?

• 29:44Speaker 04

  I, I don't know, I think that's what the film is.

• 29:46Speaker 03

  It's mostly about that trying.

• 29:48Speaker 04

Looking at and how do you.

• 29:50Speaker 03

  Establish your family.

• 29:51Speaker 04

How do you navigate, how do you navigate the world together?

• 29:55Speaker 03

Because everyone's so damaged as well.

• 29:56Speaker 04

Yeah, and that's what actually um. Adrian made a great point about how do you build such a, to use a building analogy, how do you build a foundation? When everything has been ripped away from you. How do you then, and particularly with two people who've gone through it, who've both been through trauma, it's very hard to build a sure foundation.

• 30:20Jessie Ware?

Before we let you go, we'd like to know your last supper for listening.

• 30:24Speaker 04

  Oh, yes.

• 30:25Jessie Ware?

So you've got a starter, a main, a pudding, a drink of choice.

• 30:27Speaker 04

  Okay. My, um, prawn cocktail.

• 30:34Jessie Ware?

Hmm, where are you getting your prawn cocktail from?

• 30:37Speaker 04

  Um, as in.

• 30:39Jessie Ware?

Is it a particular place or do you?

• 30:41Speaker 04

Oh, a particular place. Just at home.

• 30:43Jessie Ware?

Oh, you make it? Do you make it with Mary Rose?

• 30:46Speaker 04

  I've made it for ages.

• 30:47Jessie Ware?

  Mary, Mary Rose.

• 30:48Speaker 04

Again, that's something else my mother used to make when we were little.

• 30:52Jessie Ware?

You seem such a fan of your mum.

• 30:54Speaker 04

  Yeah, I am.

• 30:56Jessie Ware?

You've got that in common, don't you?

• 30:57Speaker 04

Yes, I mean, all parent-child relationships come with, you know, many features.

• 31:03Jessie Ware?

  Yes.

• 31:04Speaker 04

But, um, but I'm, I'm actually very close to both my, um, my mum and my dad. And particularly, I think, when you have children yourself.

• 31:11Jessie Ware?

  Yes.

• 31:11Speaker 04

You have a new understanding of these people and you totally, yeah, you become, you become friends.

• 31:19Jessie Ware?

Yeah, so you prawn cocktail first.

• 31:21Speaker 04

Yes, so prawn cocktail first, homemade Mary Rose sauce.

• 31:25Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 31:26Speaker 04

Um, a little bit of lettuce.

• 31:30Jessie Ware?

  Would you put Tabasco in?

• 31:31Speaker 04

Tabasco, definitely. Tabasco is the key ingredient.

• 31:34Jessie Ware?

Are you a hot sauce girl?

• 31:35Speaker 04

I never used to be, and my husband loves chili on everything.

• 31:40Jessie Ware?

  Oh, my God.

• 31:41Speaker 04

And I found that now my, no, now my, it's gone up.

• 31:45Jessie Ware?

Your tolerance. You could do hot ones soon.

• 31:48Speaker 04

  So, what, oh, what?

• 31:49Jessie Ware?

Where you eat the chicken wings.

• 31:51Speaker 04

  Oh.

• 31:51Jessie Ware?

  You've not seen that?

• 31:52Speaker 04

  No, what is that?

• 31:53Jessie Ware?

You literally eat like ten chicken wings.

• 31:54Speaker 04

Oh, I know I did. I saw a clip on Instagram.

• 31:57Jessie Ware?

  You'll be arsed soon, babes.

• 31:59Speaker 04

Goodness, I'll have to prepare for that, yeah.

• 32:03Jessie Ware?

So, so you do a prawn, prawn cocktail?

• 32:06Speaker 04

  So prawn cocktail.

• 32:07Jessie Ware?

A bit big prawns or small?

• 32:09Speaker 04

Actually, I quite like the small prawn. Yeah, I think it's easy, you get them in your mouth easier. I would go, I would go for eighties on it. Otherwise you have to hold the tail and suck it out, don't you? And they're really nice, you know, like French cravat, you don't, that's a whole different thing, I think. And you don't want the. Yeah. Maribou sauce with those, you want to peel them and you want kind of garlic and mayonnaise, so. Yeah. What is that? I can never know. Aioli, don't you? So, yeah, I would go for the smaller prawn and then. On the, and then the lunch would be macaroni cheese. Yum. You're not the first person to talk about mac and cheese. Coleman Domingo is in here. It's the comfort factor. Yes.

• 32:53Speaker 04

With tomatoes on top. Yes, that's how my grandma made it.

• 32:58Speaker 03

  And she was from Birmingham.

• 33:01Speaker 04

  Full circle.

• 33:02Speaker 03

Yeah, it's definitely a Birmingham. She used to put, drop them on the top.

• 33:07Speaker 04

Oh my god, is that a Birmingham thing?

• 33:10Speaker 03

And then kind of burst into the macaroni cheese.

• 33:13Speaker 04

A delicacy from the heart of Birmingham. Who taught you about that, your mum? My mother.

• 33:19Speaker 03

  Oh, it's definitely.

• 33:20Speaker 04

Oh my god, maybe we're related.

• 33:23Speaker 04

  It goes both ways.

• 33:27Speaker 04

You do look like my sister, fuck, we should really investigate this. I feel like you can move in. Bring my family. Absolutely.

• 33:34Speaker 03

  And apricot upside down pudding.

• 33:37Speaker 04

  Or chocolate mousse.

• 33:38Speaker 03

You like a chocolate mousse? Have you got a secret to your chocolate mousse, besides the flims?

• 33:44Speaker 04

This isn't even homemade chocolate mousse. Oh. Where are you getting it from? Well, I like the, the bon, is it bon mignon? Oh, I love them. I quite like the bon mignon. But then I would put a little, maybe apricot upside down pudding on the. On the side, yeah. And maybe a little crème fraiche as well. Drink.

• 34:02Speaker 04

Drink, um, drink would be probably nice glass of dry rosé.

• 34:10Speaker 03

  Oh, I love rosé.

• 34:12Speaker 04

  I love rosé.

• 34:13Speaker 03

  I don't know why I don't drink it in the winter, but I don't.

• 34:17Speaker 04

It sort of goes out of fashion, doesn't it? Well, and also it's quite nice to drink red in the winter.

• 34:21Speaker 03

It is nice to drink red, but people still drink white in the winter.

• 34:25Speaker 04

They do, but rosé just doesn't make it over the hump.

• 34:30Speaker 03

No, it doesn't, and I love it. I think I've got to go back to drinking rosé.

• 34:34Speaker 04

I think you'll, you'll find a way. Yeah, yeah. Some, somehow.

• 34:40Speaker 03

How long are you going to be in England for, before you whisk off again?

• 34:45Speaker 04

  Who knows?

• 34:45Speaker 03

  Oh, right.

• 34:46Speaker 04

  You do know.

• 34:49Speaker 04

You're about to do something really exciting. You can do theatre. What about theatre? I love, I love doing theatre.

• 34:55Speaker 03

Why don't you do something next, would that be good for two children at that age? I mean, I don't know. It's the worst thing to do for, if you've got children, because you have to leave so early. And you never see them at night and they're in school during the day.

• 35:07Speaker 04

I don't know, I tend to think the right. It's a good excuse.

• 35:13Speaker 03

  I'm off to the theatre.

• 35:14Speaker 04

Yeah, um, I think it depend, it depends on the project. It depends.

• 35:18Speaker 03

  Have you got exciting things?

• 35:21Speaker 04

Well, nothing you can tell us.

• 35:24Speaker 03

  What is going on?

• 35:25Speaker 04

Um, I've got, uh, I've got this, oh, what fun, this ensemble.

• 35:29Speaker 03

  Great, can't wait.

• 35:30Speaker 04

Comedy. And then I did a really tiny indie movie called Train Dreams, which is our, which is going to Sundance this year. And is out, well, who knows when it'll be out.

• 35:42Speaker 03

  Who's in it with you?

• 35:43Speaker 04

  Joel Edgerton.

• 35:45Speaker 03

  Oh, great.

• 35:46Speaker 04

Who's fantastic. Yeah, I've worked with some really great people. Joel Edgerton in, uh, Train Dreams. This last year, because we shot everything last year, and then Michelle Pfeiffer and Jason Schwartz and me.

• 35:58Speaker 03

I just imagine, after one fine day with George Clooney.

• 36:02Speaker 04

  Oh, I love that, love.

• 36:03Speaker 03

Imagine she's just, is she like?

• 36:05Speaker 04

She's, oh, she's just, yeah, really cool.

• 36:09Speaker 03

She's still pretty as well, isn't she?

• 36:11Speaker 04

Oh, yeah, you sometimes you're just like.

• 36:13Speaker 03

  Yeah, she's so pretty.

• 36:15Speaker 04

  Face is amazing.

• 36:16Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 36:17Speaker 04

Um, but I watched, re-watched one fine day, having not seen it for years.

• 36:20Speaker 03

  So good.

• 36:21Speaker 04

And then I watched it, um, when I was working with Michelle. I know, we'd go through as the cast, um. It's Chloe, um, Chloe Grace Moretz is in it and Dominic Sessa, who was in The Holdovers and Jason Schwartzman.

• 36:35Speaker 03

Who was he in The Holdovers?

• 36:36Speaker 04

  He played the lead.

• 36:40Speaker 03

  Before.

• 36:41Speaker 04

Yeah, it, no, it was his, he was at drama school and it was one of his first jobs.

• 36:45Speaker 03

  Yeah, I loved him.

• 36:46Speaker 04

Oh, and he, so he plays, so I'm the eldest and then Chloe's the middle and Dominic is the youngest. So, and we were very, we were very close, um, and Dennis Leary plays our father. Uh, but we would just go through Michelle's C V, you know, go, look at all of these, I mean, unbelievable, just one amazing director after another.

• 37:06Speaker 03

  Just got it to Romco.

• 37:08Speaker 04

  And she's a, but she's.

• 37:09Jessie Ware?

She's a great actress, yeah. Also, I don't know if your four year olds are too young, but we just got into Hairspray the Musical, she was very good on that too.

• 37:17Speaker 04

  Oh, was she in that?

• 37:18Jessie Ware?

Remake, she was in the remake with Tron Travolta and Zac Efron, because my son's obsessed with Zac Efron.

• 37:23Speaker 04

  Oh, I haven't seen that.

• 37:24Jessie Ware?

Yes, it, it's, it's quite fun when they're a bit older, it's really good. Um, last question, a nostalgic taste that can take you back somewhere.

• 37:33Speaker 04

Um, nostalgic taste, as in a food?

• 37:37Jessie Ware?

It can be a taste, a scent, something that can transport you back.

• 37:41Speaker 04

Oh, my, um, I have my, um, grandmother's old dressing table, um, and it's so, uh, bizarre. And I've got, you know, I use it to put my makeup on and stuff and I, um, in the drawers, when I open the drawers, it is, the smell is her.

• 37:58Speaker 03

  Oh.

• 37:59Speaker 04

It's so insane. And I've got some of her old, she used to wear these amazing, um, silk scarves and I've got a couple of those as well. But it's literally like a time capsule. I'll open it, oh, I've just, that just brings, sometimes a smell brings someone back. So much more powerfully, doesn't it?

• 38:18Speaker 03

  Do you ever do karaoke?

• 38:20Speaker 04

Sometimes. I haven't done it recently, actually. I feel like there was a time in my life I was always going to karaoke, so I guess it's in your twenties, isn't it? I don't really have a song. I'm not a big singer.

• 38:31Jessie Ware?

Have you sung in any of your parts?

• 38:33Speaker 04

  I'm not, yeah.

• 38:34Jessie Ware?

  Have you sung?

• 38:35Speaker 04

No, I did a disastrous musical when I was, um, when I was doing my A levels and, um.

• 38:42Jessie Ware?

  What musical?

• 38:43Speaker 04

Oh, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. And they should not have, I should not have been cast. I literally, I cannot keep time. I cannot keep time. I cannot sing a song and keep time with the, and I just kept looking over at the pianist and he was just looking at me like, what is she doing? It was so awful. Oh my God, I literally have like, get shakes just from thinking about it. And I was looking at the, I'd be doing these songs, you know, and I'd give it, give it my best shot.

• 39:12Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 39:13Speaker 04

And I'd be looking at the audience and I'd just sort of see their faces going, oh. So, um, yeah, so I will leave singing to those who are better.

• 39:22Jessie Ware?

Um, Felicity Jones, thank you very much for being on the podcast.

• 39:26Speaker 04

  Thank you.

• 39:27Jessie Ware?

Best of luck with the nominations tomorrow.

• 39:30Speaker 04

  Oh, thank you.

• 39:31Jessie Ware?

And no doubt you're up for one. So deserved.

• 39:33Speaker 04

  Make it happen.

• 39:34Jessie Ware?

  I think it's, I think constantly.

• 39:36Speaker 03

Let's put it out into the universe that that.

  When do you find out?

• 39:40Speaker 04

  Tomorrow afternoon.

• 39:41Jessie Ware?

  At what time?

• 39:41Speaker 04

  Thursday.

• 39:42Jessie Ware?

They do like a readout, do they?

• 39:44Speaker 04

I, I think so. I think two people read it. I mean, I don't care.

• 39:48Jessie Ware?

  No, whatever.

• 39:49Speaker 04

  Whatever, Trevor.

• 39:51Jessie Ware?

Yeah, exactly. Um, thanks so much and best of luck with The Brutalist.

  Well, Felicity Jones is fabulous.

• 40:12Speaker 03

  Gorgeous woman.

• 40:13Jessie Ware?

• 40:14Speaker 03

  Clever.

• 40:15Jessie Ware?

  So clever.

• 40:16Speaker 03

So, so bright, so interested and interesting.

• 40:20Jessie Ware?

Really loved having her. Um, thank you to Felicity Jones for coming on the podcast. And everyone can go and see The Brutalist now. Um, this is coming out probably when the Oscar nominations have come out. So congratulations, Felicity.

• 40:35Jessie Ware?

I'm sure you're up for one.

• 40:37Speaker 03

I thought she was completely wonderful.

• 40:39Jessie Ware?

  Your tart was fab.

• 40:41Speaker 03

  It wasn't a but today.

• 40:42Jessie Ware?

  No.

• 40:45Jessie Ware?

  I'm saying nothing.

• 40:46Speaker 03

  You could have added.

• 40:47Jessie Ware?

You told me to not give you a but, so I.

• 40:49Speaker 03

  Keep your buts out.

• 40:50Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 40:51Speaker 03

  But out.
