Ep 262: Jerry Seinfeld

Big time ep this week. Jerry Seinfeld joins Mark and Sam for a master class in standup, craft, bombing, discipline, and the joy and pain of joke writing. They get into brutality onstage, late night comedy history, why Sebastian’s physicality kills, Rodney stories, Carlin stories, obsessing over bits that never work, and how to stay sharp decades into a career. Plus, some classic peeves, movie talk, and deep comedy philosophy. A monster episode. Sponsored by: Go to https://quince.com/drunk for free shipping on your order and 365 day returns. This is the worst part of the podcast world.

• 0:10Mark Normand?

  What's that?

• 0:10Speaker 00

  It's just that you're, you're, you're set in a spot. You're like, you stay here. It's like a dog.

• 0:17Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 0:18Speaker 00

  You sit. You stay here.

• 0:21Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 0:21Speaker 00

Right? In comedy, we, it's free, it's about freedom.

• 0:26Sam Morril?

You don't move a ton, though. Do you move a lot?

• 0:29Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 0:29Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 0:30Sam Morril?

  I guess you do.

• 0:30Mark Normand?

You told me to move more.

• 0:31Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 0:32Speaker 00

Yeah. Yeah, it's boring watching someone stand there.

• 0:36Mark Normand?

  Sure.

• 0:36Sam Morril?

  Oh, man.

• 0:37Mark Normand?

Wait, wait for him. He's planted, like a magnet on the ground.

• 0:41Speaker 00

  You gotta walk.

• 0:42Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 0:43Mark Normand?

  He doesn't walk.

• 0:44Speaker 00

It really, it keeps, it does keep them awake. I mean, I didn't at the beginning, when I first started playing theaters, I didn't. And then I realized, why am I not using this? It's a whole thing. You gotta use it.

• 0:56Mark Normand?

Look at Chris Rock. I mean, that guy never stops.

• 0:58Speaker 00

  Yeah, he's a stomper.

• 0:59Sam Morril?

  That's Carter.

• 1:00Speaker 00

  He likes to march around.

• 1:02Mark Normand?

But that's why I hate Zoom cow. Did you ever do a Zoom gig? Who am I talking to? Why the hell would you do a Zoom gig?

• 1:07Speaker 00

  No.

• 1:08Sam Morril?

He didn't have to compromise during COVID.

• 1:10Speaker 00

Let's start with an introduction here of who's here.

• 1:12Mark Normand?

  Oh, okay, okay.

• 1:12Speaker 00

  So you know who's here.

• 1:15Mark Normand?

  I think people know.

• 1:15Speaker 00

Zoom gig. No. No, people did them. A lot of people did them.

• 1:21Sam Morril?

  I know did them.

• 1:22Speaker 00

  Yeah, I know.

• 1:24Mark Normand?

  He's a psycho.

• 1:25Speaker 00

I think, did Gaffigan do them too?

• 1:27Mark Normand?

  I bet he did.

• 1:28Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 1:29Mark Normand?

Yeah, but my point is you can't move. You're stuck on a screen.

• 1:32Sam Morril?

But we were so sick that we convinced ourselves it wasn't that bad during that time.

• 1:35Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:36Speaker 00

  Right.

• 1:36Sam Morril?

I mean, I knew it was bad, but I was like, that wasn't that bad.

• 1:39Mark Normand?

Well, it was basically the crackhead digging at the bottom of the, uh, the pipe, you know, we're just trying to get some, some resin, some hit.

• 1:45Sam Morril?

I was on the first show back, you were the first Comic On at Gotham, the first show back from COVID.

• 1:50Speaker 00

  Really?

• 1:51Sam Morril?

Yeah. You were the first, you went on before the host, because it was like symbolic, I think.

• 1:55Speaker 00

  Wow, I don't remember that.

• 1:58Mark Normand?

  Really?

• 1:59Speaker 00

No, no, no, I didn't do a set that night. No, I just did a, he did a thing for, uh, money for Broadway. And, uh, he had some bill to get money for people, so I came in. I remember I didn't take the mask off. It was a bunch of people.

• 2:14Mark Normand?

  Hmm.

• 2:14Sam Morril?

No. Jude, Jude is still wearing a mask.

• 2:18Mark Normand?

  That's true.

• 2:18Sam Morril?

  A Friedlander.

• 2:20Speaker 00

  Well, that's good.

• 2:23Speaker 00

That tells you and informs you of what you're gon', what you've got, you know?

• 2:28Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 2:28Speaker 00

It's like the trucks with the big balls hanging in the back, you know? Okay, I know who I'm dealing with here.

• 2:34Mark Normand?

  Anti-Semite. Clearly.

• 2:39Mark Normand?

Yeah, I, uh, I have this classic car. I, I wanna put bumper stickers on it, but I don't wanna be that guy.

• 2:45Speaker 00

Why? What, what kind of bumper stickers?

• 2:47Mark Normand?

Well, just funny bumper stickers. People give me stuff.

• 2:50Speaker 00

  Funny bumper stickers?

• 2:50Mark Normand?

Yeah, the show, I wanna put the podcast.

• 2:52Speaker 00

This is breaking. Just funny bumper stickers.

• 2:55Sam Morril?

Are you really looking at bumper stickers?

• 2:57Mark Normand?

I'm a big bumper sticker guy.

• 2:58Speaker 00

  Old ones?

• 2:58Mark Normand?

Old ones, yeah, they're, they're cool. But then I don't wanna, you know, ruin the car, ruin the bumper.

• 3:04Speaker 00

  I just bought a sixty-three VW Beetle.

• 3:07Mark Normand?

  Okay.

• 3:08Speaker 00

That has, uh, Nixon's the one bumper sticker on it.

• 3:10Mark Normand?

  See, that's cool.

• 3:11Sam Morril?

  That is cool.

• 3:12Speaker 00

  Yeah, I mean, it's a real thing.

• 3:14Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 3:14Speaker 00

It's a real old, you know? But what would you get? What is funny? Tell me what's funny.

• 3:19Mark Normand?

Uh, no fat chicks, uh, you know, something like that. Something fun.

• 3:24Speaker 00

Uh, gas, grass, or ass, nobody rides for free.

• 3:29Sam Morril?

I don't even think I know any bumper stickers.

• 3:30Mark Normand?

  Well, you're a Manhattanite.

• 3:31Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 3:33Mark Normand?

No, bumper stickers were big. I lived on the highway in Louisiana. I was always on the highway.

• 3:38Speaker 00

Oh, so there they are. So that's how you do it on this show? You got a Googler?

• 3:43Mark Normand?

Yes, Google bitch, we call him.

• 3:45Speaker 00

We had this, um, I first experienced this at DreamWorks in two thousand and five, when I was making B-movie.

• 3:53Mark Normand?

  Hmm.

• 3:54Speaker 00

And, uh, it was still kind of a thing. And whatever we'd be talking about, they'd have somebody Googling it.

• 4:00Mark Normand?

  Oh.

• 4:01Speaker 00

But he didn't have a screen, he just kept turning it around.

• 4:03Mark Normand?

  Ah.

• 4:04Speaker 00

And we called him Swively Googler.

• 4:07Mark Normand?

Sounds like a Harry Potter guy. Slightly googler. Well, now they turn the tip, uh, tip thing around. You see in this? I'm sure you got 20 minutes on the tip flip. You know that at Starbucks where they flip the screen?

• 4:18Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 4:19Mark Normand?

  And it says 18%, 20%, 25%?

• 4:21Sam Morril?

I saw one recently that was, it was, I think, 25, 50, 75.

• 4:26Speaker 00

  Come on.

• 4:26Mark Normand?

  Ah, 75?

• 4:27Speaker 00

  75.

• 4:28Sam Morril?

It was, yeah, it was, it was insane.

• 4:30Speaker 00

  Where in Dubai?

• 4:33Mark Normand?

Come on. Yeah, everything's tipped now.

• 4:35Sam Morril?

  Everything's tipped.

• 4:36Mark Normand?

  The service got worse.

• 4:37Speaker 00

Anything, any goddamn thing where they get in, you cannot get them out.

• 4:43Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 4:44Speaker 00

Right? They, they got away with it and that's it. And they're taking the money. I was just reading on the way down. I, you watch Red Zone on Sunday, right?

• 4:54Sam Morril?

  Sometimes.

• 4:54Speaker 00

They, so they put commercials on it.

• 4:56Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 4:57Speaker 00

It's like $280 for this channel to watch football with no commercials.

• 5:02Mark Normand?

  Okay.

• 5:03Speaker 00

And they said, well, you won't notice it, but now they're all, but that's it. They're not going back. Nobody goes back.

• 5:08Mark Normand?

  They don't go back.

• 5:09Speaker 00

  No.

• 5:09Mark Normand?

I'll give you a couple more examples.

• 5:11Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 5:12Mark Normand?

Chips and salsa at every Mexican restaurant they put on the table. Now it's five bucks.

• 5:16Sam Morril?

  Is it?

• 5:16Speaker 00

  Ah.

• 5:17Mark Normand?

They'll never go back. Cause you want the chips and salsa, you pay the money and...

• 5:22Speaker 00

But do you have to order it?

• 5:23Mark Normand?

  You have to order it.

• 5:24Speaker 00

  Okay, well, that's different.

• 5:25Mark Normand?

  Hit the table.

• 5:26Speaker 00

If you're asking for it, then I don't mind paying, but don't put it down and then put it down.

• 5:30Mark Normand?

Sure, sure. Yeah. But it used to be free, is my point.

• 5:33Sam Morril?

It's such a nice touch. They ever go to a restaurant and they just have like random appetizers that you didn't order? Like, uh, there's an Italian place downtown and they just, like, the food's a little more expensive, but then they bring out like cheese and salami and eggplant.

• 5:46Mark Normand?

  That's a nice touch.

• 5:47Sam Morril?

  That's a, it's a nice surprise.

• 5:48Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 5:49Speaker 00

What was the other one you had?

• 5:50Mark Normand?

I got a couple of these. I've been right making a list and checking it twice. The, um, the burger at a diner, it used to come with, you know, a pickle, lettuce and a tomato. Now that's deluxe. Now it's the deluxe burger. So you have to order more or pay more.

• 6:06Speaker 00

Oh, boy. Things are tough for you.

• 6:10Mark Normand?

  I'm not done.

• 6:11Sam Morril?

He got this from you. He got the complaining, but we both watched you growing up and we're like, it's okay to complain.

• 6:17Speaker 00

Yes, it is okay. If it's, you know.

• 6:20Mark Normand?

  How about the hotel?

• 6:23Mark Normand?

The check-in and now is at four, four, and then the checkout is at 11. So the window is getting smaller, but the price is going up.

• 6:30Sam Morril?

Yeah, you're paying for what, 17 hours?

• 6:32Mark Normand?

  Yes, if you're lucky.

• 6:34Speaker 00

  Is he doing me?

• 6:37Sam Morril?

He's been doing you for 15 years.

• 6:40Mark Normand?

No, I'm serious. These are all things that have changed and they'll never go back.

• 6:43Speaker 00

But people must do a lot. There must be a lot of comics doing the tip thing.

• 6:47Mark Normand?

  Yeah, oh yeah.

• 6:48Sam Morril?

  That's gotta be everywhere.

• 6:49Mark Normand?

  Big time.

• 6:49Sam Morril?

When the self-checkout was a thing, that was every comic had that bit.

• 6:52Speaker 00

  Right, right.

• 6:53Mark Normand?

  I got a check, yeah, a self-checkout bit.

• 6:55Speaker 00

What's the best one that you heard of?

• 6:57Sam Morril?

  Burr had a good one.

• 6:58Mark Normand?

Yeah, I don't work here. You do it. Why am I doing your job?

• 7:02Sam Morril?

Yeah, but it was a better, it was like a better version of that.

• 7:03Speaker 00

I did that in the movie theater decades ago.

• 7:06Sam Morril?

  Yes.

• 7:07Mark Normand?

  Dropping the popcorn.

• 7:08Sam Morril?

You did it at the Oscars.

• 7:10Speaker 00

  That's right.

• 7:11Sam Morril?

  I remember.

• 7:12Speaker 00

That was 2007, B-movie, same era.

• 7:16Mark Normand?

How rough is that crowd? Is that brutal?

• 7:18Speaker 00

  It's, you know, it's a corporate.

• 7:20Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 7:21Speaker 00

I gave Al Gore his Oscar for Inconvenient Truth.

• 7:26Mark Normand?

  Who's?

• 7:26Speaker 00

  Al Gore.

• 7:27Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 7:28Speaker 00

Remember that started the whole greenie thing?

• 7:30Mark Normand?

  Sure, sure.

• 7:31Speaker 00

  That was the category.

• 7:32Sam Morril?

When you're up at the Oscars, who are you looking for in the crowd? They're like, I hope I can get a laugh out of this person.

• 7:37Speaker 00

  I don't look for laughs. I'm listening. I listen. I don't look.

• 7:41Sam Morril?

  All right.

• 7:42Mark Normand?

So I got a joke on with Gervais did it, or the Golden Globes or one of those. I sent him a couple of jokes.

• 7:47Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 7:47Mark Normand?

And one of my jokes, they showed Tom Hanks and he goes, oof.

• 7:53Sam Morril?

It was about him being a pedophile, that's why.

• 7:56Mark Normand?

Wasn't far off, but yeah, that was a hit for me.

• 7:58Sam Morril?

  No.

• 7:59Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 8:00Sam Morril?

Damn, that's rough. I remember Schumer did a roast once. We were at that roast with her. It was at the hotel by here. And I gave her a line on the way and she did it. And I just saw her look at me. I was just like, I'm sorry. Just nothing.

• 8:13Mark Normand?

  Yeah. Well, you tried.

• 8:15Speaker 00

I was given a line by Nick DiPaolo.

• 8:19Mark Normand?

  Mmm.

• 8:20Speaker 00

And you know, when someone gives you a line, it's a beautiful thing.

• 8:22Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 8:23Speaker 00

  Especially when it works.

• 8:24Mark Normand?

  When it works.

• 8:25Speaker 00

And isn't it true that whenever you do the line, there's a little bubble with their face in it?

• 8:30Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 8:30Speaker 00

  In your head, right?

• 8:31Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 8:32Speaker 00

You see that person. Well, this is the greatest line I've ever been given. And it's a really good line, but he should have the credit because he gave it to me.

• 8:40Mark Normand?

  He's told me.

• 8:41Speaker 00

  You know the line?

• 8:42Mark Normand?

  I know the line.

• 8:42Speaker 00

The coffin and the eulogy, the number one fear is speaking in front of people. Number two is death. And I don't remember what I had, I don't.

• 8:51Mark Normand?

Which, does it, does it hurt you? Does it sting a little that you didn't come up with it, though?

• 8:56Speaker 00

  No, a little.

• 8:58Sam Morril?

  It was your premise, though.

• 8:59Speaker 00

Yeah, but so he gave me, you know, that means if you're going to a funeral, you'd rather be in the coffin than doing the eulogy.

• 9:04Sam Morril?

  It's a great line.

• 9:05Speaker 00

  Yeah, it's a great line.

• 9:06Mark Normand?

  That's great.

• 9:06Sam Morril?

It's so, it's like, guy, you ever with a bit, you just overcomplicate things and you're like, that was it?

• 9:11Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 9:12Sam Morril?

The most simple thing is usually.

• 9:14Speaker 00

But isn't it amazing how the audience tells you that?

• 9:18Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 9:19Speaker 00

Isn't it amazing what they can communicate? It's kind of like a dog. You know, dogs look at you and you can kind of form sentences from their face.

• 9:27Mark Normand?

  Right, right, yeah, yeah.

• 9:29Speaker 00

I think he wants to go out, you know, he's just looking at you a certain way.

• 9:32Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 9:33Speaker 00

Audiences do the same thing. They just make weird sounds.

• 9:37Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 9:37Speaker 00

That just say, yeah, but, that idea but different.

• 9:41Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 9:42Speaker 00

Or that idea but faster. Or not that idea, we like the way you got into it, but we don't like where it went.

• 9:49Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 9:50Speaker 00

The, the amount of information, when, especially, I find, what I love, when you go on to try new stuff and it's a total mess.

• 9:59Mark Normand?

  Yeah, oh yeah.

• 9:59Speaker 00

You know what I mean? You can't remember it, you're all over the place, you're.

• 10:03Sam Morril?

How often is that for you, though? Because I feel like your stuff, even when I see you work out, it seems pretty polished.

• 10:08Speaker 00

No, no, most of the time. I mean, I have stuff at different, everything's at a different level, obviously, but the first time, sometimes it gets really messy. But still, they, you come off and it's like someone just hands you a report.

• 10:23Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 10:24Speaker 00

Right? In your head, like, here's what you need to fix, here's what we liked. I don't think people understand how much audiences write the act. You know, the act that you're seeing is what the last hundred crowds liked.

• 10:37Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 10:38Speaker 00

That's what you're gonna see tonight.

• 10:40Mark Normand?

But why is it so hard for us to write down funny ideas, funny jokes, and then the audience goes, no? And I'm, I'm like, how did I not predict this? Why is that such a hard?

• 10:51Speaker 00

  Well, because you're dealing.

• 10:52Mark Normand?

  Translation.

• 10:53Speaker 00

Because you're dealing with something that no one understands, really. No one really knows what's funny.

• 10:59Mark Normand?

  Hmm.

• 11:00Speaker 00

I mean, we, we can be pretty sure.

• 11:03Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 11:03Speaker 00

That's about as good as it gets.

• 11:05Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 11:05Speaker 00

I'm pretty sure. That's why, you know, to write a lot of stuff, I think, like if you write, like when Larry and I did the show, between the two of us, so you got a, you cut kind of a cross filter.

• 11:17Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 11:17Speaker 00

If you can get by both of us, we thought, okay, that's probably got a chance.

• 11:22Mark Normand?

  Yeah, but.

• 11:23Speaker 00

But just one person's not enough.

• 11:24Mark Normand?

It really isn't. And you could do it for, what, 50 years? What are you at?

• 11:28Speaker 00

  50 years.

• 11:28Mark Normand?

Yeah, they still, you think you know, you still don't know.

• 11:31Speaker 00

  No.

• 11:32Sam Morril?

We used to bounce bits in coffee shops all the time when we were starting out. Was there a comic you did that with early on?

• 11:37Speaker 00

  Every, every comic I know?

• 11:38Sam Morril?

Was there like a go-to guy? Was Shanley one of them?

• 11:41Speaker 00

Uh, yeah, Gary loves to bounce. I never met a comedian that didn't like to bounce stuff around.

• 11:46Sam Morril?

I feel like not everyone does it anymore.

• 11:47Mark Normand?

No, everything's so splintered now. Everything's very individual.

• 11:50Speaker 00

I was watching Sebastian's new special, which is fantastic, on Hulu.

• 11:54Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 11:55Speaker 00

It Ain't Right. And I got upset because, you know, when you watch a comic, you just see jokes so easily that they somehow missed?

• 12:04Mark Normand?

  Ah.

• 12:05Speaker 00

You know, and it's just, you can't see everything.

• 12:09Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 12:09Speaker 00

From the inside. But, so he has this great bit about a dinner and people say, I'll Venmo you the money.

• 12:17Mark Normand?

  Yep.

• 12:17Speaker 00

And he, he says, well, what if the guy dies? I'm at the funeral. And I gotta go up to the widow and go, listen, you know, I'm sorry for your loss, and I wanted to add, but I don't want it to be my loss.

• 12:30Sam Morril?

  Ooh, that's good.

• 12:31Speaker 00

It's a good laugh there, and it's already shot and aired.

• 12:35Mark Normand?

  Damn.

• 12:36Speaker 00

  Yeah. Maybe we can re-edit.

• 12:40Sam Morril?

He could tell that at a corporate or something.

• 12:41Mark Normand?

  Yeah, right.

• 12:44Speaker 00

I gotta call him later. Yeah, it's a really funny show. I like, you know.

• 12:50Speaker 00

  He's really comfortable.

• 12:53Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 12:54Speaker 00

I love a comedian. You could tell, you know what? You could tell he's been working a lot. I love that look.

• 13:00Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 13:00Speaker 00

  You can see it.

• 13:01Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 13:01Speaker 00

You can see a guy that's been working a lot, or a woman. Or who's been laying off.

• 13:08Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 13:08Speaker 00

There's no hiding it, you know? There's just a, it's the way your feet move on the floor.

• 13:14Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 13:15Speaker 00

When you start moving them, you'll see.

• 13:16Sam Morril?

  I'll try.

• 13:17Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 13:17Mark Normand?

  Well, what a little.

• 13:18Sam Morril?

I'm gonna, I'm gonna focus on that.

• 13:20Mark Normand?

  Yeah, right?

• 13:21Speaker 00

You have to. Really, you have to.

• 13:22Sam Morril?

Well, actually, we were just talking, we just did a similar gig in Reno at a casino and.

• 13:27Mark Normand?

  Not bragging.

• 13:28Sam Morril?

  That wasn't the story.

• 13:31Sam Morril?

  But.

• 13:32Speaker 00

There's no similar gigs in Reno. They're all the same.

• 13:35Sam Morril?

But we, yeah, I was moving a little more because it was kind of a very horizontal room, so I kinda had to.

• 13:42Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 13:43Sam Morril?

And you're like, oh, this actually, it doesn't feel that bad.

• 13:45Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 13:45Sam Morril?

And I had to give a little more energy because it's a casino. You just feel like you have to.

• 13:48Speaker 00

Of course. It, it's a form of punctuation that you're, that you're not using.

• 13:54Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 13:55Speaker 00

  That you should use.

• 13:56Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 13:56Speaker 00

You should use everything you have, because you don't have much.

• 14:00Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 14:00Speaker 00

  You know?

• 14:01Mark Normand?

Well, you don't want to hump the stool. Slow down.

• 14:03Speaker 00

No, this, but don't you love how many different things the stool has been?

• 14:08Mark Normand?

  Oh, my God, yeah.

• 14:09Speaker 00

  And the mic stand.

• 14:11Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 14:11Speaker 00

Let's do some favorites of that.

• 14:15Mark Normand?

Or any Adams with the big cellphone. Remember that one?

• 14:17Speaker 00

Yeah, yeah. Leno used to do one with the, the key to the men's room. It's on the end of this ring and don't try and steal it.

• 14:26Mark Normand?

  Oh, that's great. That's great.

• 14:29Speaker 00

And who used to do, you're a good comedy historian, somebody used to do, might have been Sinbad, The Weatherman in a Storm. And he got on the stool horizontally and did the weather report, you know?

• 14:44Mark Normand?

  Oh, wow.

• 14:44Speaker 00

He was holding on to the mic stand like a pole. That was great.

• 14:48Mark Normand?

  That's great.

• 14:49Sam Morril?

If that doesn't hit, you just look like an idiot. You gotta respect that risk.

• 14:52Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 14:53Sam Morril?

There's this comic Nick Vatterott, and he would just go, I remember at like open mics, he would go so big. And I admired it so much because there'd be like four people in a room. So when that, when I bomb a joke, you just bomb it, it's whatever.

• 15:04Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 15:05Sam Morril?

But when he bombed a joke, you like, you're like, ooh, that's rough.

• 15:08Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 15:08Sam Morril?

Killed for four people, you just were like, this is incredible.

• 15:11Mark Normand?

It was incredible. Well, that's the thing about the stools. We all, we're not huge fans of prop comedy. But you're allowed to use that.

• 15:17Speaker 00

Yeah, you're allowed to use that.

• 15:18Mark Normand?

  It was already there.

• 15:20Speaker 00

And if you can find something that no one's done with it.

• 15:22Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 15:23Speaker 00

  That's a great experience.

• 15:25Sam Morril?

Yeah, because you're working within the rules. You're not bringing up a prop.

• 15:27Speaker 00

  Right.

• 15:28Sam Morril?

You're using one of the props.

• 15:29Speaker 00

  Right.

• 15:30Mark Normand?

And anytime you can hit yourself in the head with the mic and you get that thump, that kills.

• 15:35Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 15:35Sam Morril?

  Then you'll love Bobby Collins.

• 15:36Mark Normand?

Yeah. I've never done it, but it, it works.

• 15:40Speaker 00

I'm using the mic as a PlayStation now.

• 15:43Mark Normand?

  Ah.

• 15:44Speaker 00

  Oh, no, a Game Boy.

• 15:45Mark Normand?

  Okay.

• 15:46Speaker 00

The Game Boy controller for the Titanic submersible ship.

• 15:50Mark Normand?

  What?

• 15:51Speaker 00

  He actually had, he actually.

• 15:52Sam Morril?

It was an Xbox remote, right?

• 15:54Speaker 00

  Yeah, he had an Xbox.

• 15:55Sam Morril?

  Crazy.

• 15:55Speaker 00

But I, I thought Game Boy was funnier.

• 15:57Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 15:58Sam Morril?

  Game Boy's a funnier word.

• 16:01Mark Normand?

What was, it was another, oh, I, I opened for JB Smooth for a while. And remember when the Segway came out?

• 16:05Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 16:05Mark Normand?

He would do the mic stand Segway and it would crush, crush.

• 16:09Sam Morril?

He's great with physicality. It's tough. It's tough.

• 16:12Speaker 00

  What's tough?

• 16:13Sam Morril?

I mean, not everyone has it. Not everyone, I mean, I guess within your body, you can figure it out, but not everyone is, it's not, it's not going to play for everyone. Like Sebastian, not everyone can move like Sebastian.

• 16:23Speaker 00

  No, no one can.

• 16:24Sam Morril?

  You know, it's, but.

• 16:26Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 16:27Sam Morril?

Marcelo did a pretty funny Sebastian. Did you see that?

• 16:29Speaker 00

Oh, of course I saw it. It's so wonderful.

• 16:31Mark Normand?

  It went crazy viral.

• 16:33Speaker 00

You know what it reminded me of? It reminded me of when, um, Will Ferrell and, um, Sherry O'Terry started doing the cheerleaders.

• 16:43Sam Morril?

  Yes.

• 16:44Speaker 00

I thought it was like a bubble of life. That show, you know, that show goes through its iterations.

• 16:50Mark Normand?

  Yep.

• 16:50Speaker 00

And that suddenly kind of was like a little defibrillation. It was like, I think the body might not be dead.

• 16:57Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 16:59Sam Morril?

Yeah, Will Ferrell just went so big. It's, it's.

• 17:01Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 17:02Sam Morril?

It's cool. It's so different than, you know.

• 17:05Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 17:06Sam Morril?

  Than other kinds of stand-up.

• 17:07Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 17:07Sam Morril?

Oh, this is so cool to see a guy.

• 17:09Speaker 00

Will tried to do stand-up in the early days.

• 17:12Sam Morril?

  Did he?

• 17:12Mark Normand?

  Couldn't do it.

• 17:13Speaker 00

  Yeah. Well.

• 17:14Mark Normand?

  It's a different animal.

• 17:16Speaker 00

  It's a, it's a beastly animal.

• 17:18Mark Normand?

Yeah, it's a blue collar job.

• 17:20Speaker 00

It, it is. It is. Well, you proved that.

• 17:24Mark Normand?

Well, didn't Greg Kinnear try as well?

• 17:26Speaker 00

Sure, had to. Anybody that could talk.

• 17:29Mark Normand?

  Yeah, Michael Keaton.

• 17:30Sam Morril?

But you find your thing. I mean, he's great in a lot of movies, you know, everyone's got their thing.

• 17:35Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 17:35Sam Morril?

  Not everyone, but.

• 17:36Speaker 00

  Not everyone.

• 17:37Sam Morril?

  Not everyone.

• 17:37Speaker 00

  In fact, hardly anyone.

• 17:40Sam Morril?

That is true. But didn't Michael Keaton do it, or he'd just do it for the movie?

• 17:44Mark Normand?

  He did it.

• 17:45Speaker 00

No, he was good. He was funny, too.

• 17:47Sam Morril?

  Yeah?

• 17:47Speaker 00

He used to have a bit about gangsters, the way gangsters were talking old movies.

• 17:51Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 17:53Speaker 00

Yeah, we'll do it that way, see? Something like that. I can't remember it.

• 17:57Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 17:58Speaker 00

  That was the 70s.

• 17:59Mark Normand?

But that's the thing is, you know, stand-up is so much work.

• 18:02Speaker 00

He looks like a comic, doesn't he?

• 18:03Mark Normand?

  He does, yeah.

• 18:04Speaker 00

He really looks like a comic there.

• 18:05Sam Morril?

Well, he's in that movie with Henry Winkler. He's so funny in that movie.

• 18:09Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 18:10Sam Morril?

  Night Shift.

• 18:10Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 18:11Speaker 00

Night Shift. That broke him out, yeah.

• 18:14Mark Normand?

But no one wants to stick with stand-up. That's the thing. You gotta need it.

• 18:17Speaker 00

Even stand-ups don't want to stick with it.

• 18:19Mark Normand?

Exactly, exactly. I think because it's just so much failure. You're just going against the waves over and over, and I think eventually people go, I can't do that again.

• 18:28Speaker 00

Yes, but it's a brutal, physical challenge.

• 18:34Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 18:35Speaker 00

  It's a physical challenge, weekly.

• 18:37Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 18:38Speaker 00

You know, I remember when I was doing the series, getting towards the end, and you're sitting there in that high director's chair, and someone came up to me and said, "What kind of water would you like?" And I just thought, "I gotta get out of here."

• 18:53Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 18:53Speaker 00

I'm gonna turn into Jabba the Hutt, you know?

• 18:56Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 18:58Speaker 00

What I like about, what I love about, I love everything about stand-up, but I love that it hardens you mentally, physically, emotionally. You're just getting beat up.

• 19:11Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 19:12Speaker 00

And I don't know if that's a little tinge of masochism.

• 19:15Mark Normand?

  A little bit.

• 19:17Speaker 00

But it's like baseball, too, you know? If you want to, can you believe, I mean, think about, did you watch the World Series?

• 19:24Sam Morril?

  Oh, yeah.

• 19:24Mark Normand?

  I saw the last game.

• 19:25Speaker 00

Okay, Isar Kiner-Falefa, the lead off of Third.

• 19:30Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 19:30Speaker 00

Two inches from the world championship, two inches away.

• 19:35Mark Normand?

  Hmm.

• 19:35Speaker 00

And he was a foot, his lead was so short, you know, this has been done to death on the...

• 19:41Sam Morril?

No, the picture at home plate is like...

• 19:42Mark Normand?

  Pull it up.

• 19:43Speaker 00

And he slid. He didn't have to slide. So when... And I know a guy who's a sports psychologist. I said, um, when does he ever get that out? When will he get that out of his mind?

• 19:55Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 19:55Speaker 00

Professional athlete, you have to be able to do that.

• 19:57Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 19:57Speaker 00

And he said, he needs trauma therapy right now.

• 20:00Mark Normand?

  Oh.

• 20:01Speaker 00

I mean, wouldn't you if you were, um?

• 20:03Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 20:04Speaker 00

You know, those, those field goals, Super Bowl, missing field goals, Buffalo.

• 20:08Sam Morril?

  Bill Buckner?

• 20:09Speaker 00

  Bill Buckner.

• 20:10Mark Normand?

  Sure, sure.

• 20:10Speaker 00

Larry did a funny bit with him.

• 20:12Mark Normand?

  I saw that.

• 20:13Sam Morril?

That was great that he got to poke fun at it.

• 20:15Mark Normand?

Wait, so that missed? Or is that something else?

• 20:19Speaker 00

  That's just a weird angle.

• 20:20Mark Normand?

  Oh, okay.

• 20:21Speaker 00

But that is the play. That's.

• 20:22Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 20:24Speaker 00

He's already crossing the plate there. Can you back that up a little?

• 20:27Mark Normand?

We should start naming that move after his last, what's the last name again?

• 20:30Speaker 00

  Kiner Falefa.

• 20:31Mark Normand?

Yeah, you pull the Falefa. Every time you miss the play.

• 20:34Speaker 00

But there it is, on the bottom one there, like so close. Isn't that excruciating? Now, now we're gonna make it worse. If he's watching this, he's gonna kill himself now.

• 20:41Mark Normand?

Yeah. Well, we've had that where you bomb and you're in the shower going, why the fuck did I say that?

• 20:45Sam Morril?

Players do. They do kill themselves. Hideki Irabo from the Yankees commits suicide, you know, it's like that pressure.

• 20:50Speaker 00

  No, he didn't.

• 20:51Sam Morril?

  He did.

• 20:52Mark Normand?

  Uh oh.

• 20:52Speaker 00

  Over a play?

• 20:53Sam Morril?

No, not over a play, over, over, I think, just.

• 20:56Mark Normand?

No, A-Rod slept with his girl.

• 20:58Sam Morril?

  Irabo, pulled up.

• 21:00Speaker 00

Anaheim Angels, Donnie, who blew, uh, 86.

• 21:05Mark Normand?

  Walbert.

• 21:06Speaker 00

  Blew the save, Donnie, something.

• 21:08Mark Normand?

  Most.

• 21:09Speaker 00

He, uh, he, uh, took his life. Hideki Irabo.

• 21:15Mark Normand?

  Forty-two.

• 21:16Speaker 00

A parent suicide. Had alcohol and prescription medication. Come on, we can't blame that on a play.

• 21:23Sam Morril?

Just a weekend in Reno, come on.

• 21:27Speaker 00

  A similar gig in Reno.

• 21:31Sam Morril?

Yeah, I love how much you, you, I, I think there's, are you, I've heard you compare stand-up to baseball too, like the starting lineup.

• 21:38Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 21:38Sam Morril?

  You bump a player out.

• 21:39Speaker 00

Right, you, you have your starters, you have you guys trying to get on, get in the lineup. And, um, What's weird about baseball that I've never understood, and I guess it's similar in stand-up, although stand-up is very reliable, don't you find? A good show will follow a bad show.

• 21:59Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 22:00Speaker 00

When you do a bad set, you can almost guarantee the next one's gonna, you're gonna, because I think it's like a fear thing, it's like, have I lost it? Am I done? Am I not good?

• 22:10Mark Normand?

It snaps you back on your feet.

• 22:11Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 22:12Sam Morril?

Sucks to end on the bad one that night, if you do a couple.

• 22:14Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 22:15Mark Normand?

Yeah, I did two last night, the second one was horrible, first one was great, same material. I was just, I wasn't in it, I was off, and I think I was too cocky from the first one, went down to the second club.

• 22:25Speaker 00

  There it is.

• 22:26Mark Normand?

  Died.

• 22:26Speaker 00

That's the, that's the fascinating pendulum swing of how it corrects you.

• 22:31Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 22:32Speaker 00

That's what I was trying to say, it just kind of emotionally keeps you, it's like the bumpers in a bowling alley.

• 22:38Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 22:38Speaker 00

You can't go too far, it's gonna knock you back the other way.

• 22:42Mark Normand?

Yeah, that's true, that's why you gotta tape two with the special.

• 22:46Speaker 00

  Oh, at least.

• 22:47Mark Normand?

At least, I did three this time.

• 22:48Speaker 00

I taped four and I wasn't happy with any of them.

• 22:50Sam Morril?

I'm doing two this time and I'm like, I wonder if it's a mistake, I, the last one was four too, I don't know.

• 22:56Speaker 00

  I would do four.

• 22:57Mark Normand?

I just did three, we got on the third, yeah.

• 23:00Speaker 00

  Three is good.

• 23:01Mark Normand?

Three was good, but I'm glad I did three.

• 23:02Speaker 00

Now, do you guys, I hear about these guys, that they do these specials, and they, what? You know what I'm gonna say? You don't know.

• 23:09Mark Normand?

Every 10 minutes? Every two years?

• 23:12Speaker 00

  What?

• 23:13Mark Normand?

Do a special every two years?

• 23:15Speaker 00

  I, I, I wasn't, I was, the third word of the sentence.

• 23:17Mark Normand?

All right, I thought I had it. It's a peeve.

• 23:21Speaker 00

Name that tune and, um... Do you guys not sit and edit every line with the editor?

• 23:32Mark Normand?

  I do.

• 23:33Sam Morril?

  It depends, yeah, usually, but...

• 23:36Speaker 00

It depends, on what? If you have a lunch plan?

• 23:40Sam Morril?

Well, I say, I know which show is the show, usually, and I'm like, that's mostly there.

• 23:44Mark Normand?

  Okay.

• 23:45Sam Morril?

If I don't like a line, then I just sub it out.

• 23:46Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 23:47Sam Morril?

I know the jokes well enough that I don't, I have sat with them, but the last one, I didn't, actually.

• 23:51Mark Normand?

  Mm, really?

• 23:52Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 23:52Mark Normand?

  Well, I'm too nervous.

• 23:54Sam Morril?

  Yeah, me too.

• 23:54Mark Normand?

I'm a control freak, and that's what I gotta know. I had a friend, not Joe List, who was like, "Ah, it went well, you got it." And he's miserable with it. He hates it.

• 24:02Sam Morril?

  Really?

• 24:03Mark Normand?

Yeah. He's like, "I should've sat in there."

• 24:06Speaker 00

I, I talked to a comedian the other day, no names, who was not happy with the special. And, uh, it's not someone I know that well, but, uh, asked me if I would look at it and what I thought. And I said, "Do you really wanna do this? Like, for real?"

• 24:24Mark Normand?

  Oh, God.

• 24:26Speaker 00

And, uh, the person said yes, and, uh, I watched it, and I said, "It's, it's good, but it's not as good as you are."

• 24:35Mark Normand?

  Ooh, okay.

• 24:37Speaker 00

And I don't, you know, we, we, Mark and I have discussed this endlessly, this, uh, you know, the, uh, undercooked-

• 24:45Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 24:46Speaker 00

  Chicken, you know?

• 24:47Sam Morril?

There's also an overcooked chicken, though, too.

• 24:49Speaker 00

  Huh?

• 24:49Sam Morril?

I think there's also been, you can also overcook a chicken, too.

• 24:52Speaker 00

  Yeah, you could, you could.

• 24:54Sam Morril?

  But undercooked is definitely worse.

• 24:55Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 24:56Sam Morril?

But there's a point of the tour where I'm just like, "I'm sick of these jokes."

• 24:58Speaker 00

  Really?

• 24:59Sam Morril?

I think, I'm at the point where I'm, I'm happy I'm gonna tape soon, 'cause I just-

• 25:02Speaker 00

  Right.

• 25:03Sam Morril?

I, I just think, I, I need to move on. You just gotta rip the Band-Aid at some point.

• 25:07Speaker 00

It's so impressive that, that your whole generation has, that's just the protocol. That's what you're gonna do to survive, right?

• 25:15Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 25:16Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 25:16Sam Morril?

I think it's good, but you mentioned it to me, you're a cripple for a year and a half after it.

• 25:20Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 25:21Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 25:22Sam Morril?

  It sucks.

• 25:23Speaker 00

  Yeah, but-

• 25:24Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 25:24Speaker 00

It's making the whole thing work.

• 25:26Sam Morril?

Yeah, and it is, it is good. You get, I mean, look, you're in a little postpartum funk afterwards, where you're just like, "What the hell? What is this that I'm doing on stage?"

• 25:34Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 25:34Sam Morril?

And you're trying, you need at least 10 to at least-

• 25:36Mark Normand?

  At least.

• 25:37Sam Morril?

To throw at the wall, so you're like, "Okay, I'm at the cellar, I'm not just wasting these people's time."

• 25:42Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 25:42Sam Morril?

  Something to fall back on.

• 25:43Speaker 00

  Right.

• 25:44Mark Normand?

And they look up at you like, "Why is this guy here? This guy sucks." You're like, "No, no, I have good stuff, but I'm trying not to go back to it."

• 25:50Sam Morril?

Yeah. Some young killer who's just hammering it and you're just like, and look, I saw Louis do it and Louis was just, some of those sets, he was just taking.

• 25:58Mark Normand?

  He was dying.

• 25:58Sam Morril?

An L and I was, I was, I admired it, man. He, he hung in there and now he's got great stuff, but, but it's funny when you see a guy come through and you're like, wow, this is painful. You're watching someone you know is great.

• 26:09Mark Normand?

  Well, yeah.

• 26:10Speaker 00

We used to watch Pryor do that in the seventies.

• 26:13Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 26:13Speaker 00

And he was the only one doing it.

• 26:15Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 26:16Sam Morril?

Why do you think he was the only one who did it that way?

• 26:18Speaker 00

  Nobody else had the guts.

• 26:19Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 26:20Speaker 00

To drop their, or to, you know, but he was one.

• 26:22Sam Morril?

  Turning it over?

• 26:23Speaker 00

No, not like that. He, I don't know.

• 26:26Sam Morril?

But how many Carson sets did he do?

• 26:27Speaker 00

  How many did I do? I don't know, 25, 30?

• 26:30Sam Morril?

  That's a ton of material.

• 26:31Speaker 00

But it is a ton of material, but it's not going up on stage with nothing.

• 26:34Sam Morril?

  Right.

• 26:35Speaker 00

You're losing your best six or 10.

• 26:37Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 26:38Speaker 00

That's not so bad. Losing your best hour.

• 26:40Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 26:41Speaker 00

That's different. And he, Pryor would go up and bomb.

• 26:44Sam Morril?

What did people say when he was doing that?

• 26:47Speaker 00

Um, they, the comedians would admire it.

• 26:49Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 26:50Speaker 00

You know, and he would come every night.

• 26:52Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 26:53Speaker 00

And, and, and, and do it. And of course, we would just sit and watch, you know, he was legendary.

• 26:58Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 26:59Speaker 00

  Even then, and.

• 27:00Sam Morril?

Did you interact with him at all?

• 27:02Speaker 00

  A little bit, not much.

• 27:04Mark Normand?

  Little freebase?

• 27:06Speaker 00

Yeah, just a little. I caught fire too.

• 27:11Mark Normand?

Well, Louis would, I could add a bad bomb and Louis goes, you're taking this too personally. I was like, well, it, it sucks. I feel bad. I hate myself. And he's like, you're working on the jokes. It's, it's a scientific process.

• 27:22Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 27:23Mark Normand?

You, you don't like do a math or a science project and go, oh, it didn't work. I suck. Like you try another thing and you keep doing experiments.

• 27:30Speaker 00

Yeah, but that emotional drive is also an ingredient.

• 27:35Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 27:35Speaker 00

Being angry, being frustrated, those aren't bad things.

• 27:39Mark Normand?

  Okay.

• 27:39Sam Morril?

But also you, I heard you and Rock once say, and I agree with you on this, where you were arguing, is it the, are they there for you or the material?

• 27:47Speaker 00

  Yes.

• 27:47Sam Morril?

And you said the material and he said you.

• 27:49Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 27:50Sam Morril?

And it's like, well, they're rejecting the material. They're not rejecting you.

• 27:53Speaker 00

  Same thing.

• 27:54Sam Morril?

  Same thing, but.

• 27:55Speaker 00

  If you're a professional.

• 27:56Sam Morril?

  If you're a professional.

• 27:57Mark Normand?

Yeah, but they know, they know you. They don't, they go, this guy stinks. They go, Jerry had an off night, or Rock had an off night.

• 28:03Speaker 00

Tell me which is worse? A guy you don't know that stinks or a guy you do know that stinks? It's the same thing.

• 28:09Mark Normand?

  But they've seen you kill.

• 28:10Speaker 00

I know, but they, wow, he lost it. I think that's worse.

• 28:13Mark Normand?

  That's true. That, that sucks.

• 28:15Speaker 00

He used to be funny. Oh. That's terrible.

• 28:19Mark Normand?

What, are you reading my tweets?

• 28:22Mark Normand?

Oh, okay, all right, well, that's true, but I feel like with rock, you go, oh, man, we watched rock work out new stuff. It was so cool.

• 28:28Speaker 00

Yeah, artists are so sophisticated now.

• 28:29Mark Normand?

Yeah, it's true. That's true. Now, that's a blessing and a curse, too. Because a lot of people go, I've heard this already, where's the new stuff?

• 28:37Speaker 00

  Well, that's not very sophisticated.

• 28:38Mark Normand?

  Oh, okay.

• 28:40Speaker 00

I remember they wrote that about Louis sometime in the paper. He was getting ready to shoot a thing, and the guy writes, I saw the show a month ago. It's essentially the same show. Yeah, we don't change over monthly an hour.

• 28:56Mark Normand?

That guy should be fired for that. Like, you don't know stand-up, stop reviewing it.

• 28:59Sam Morril?

That's what you really think about when you read any article. You're like, well, if you know this little about stand-up, then what do you know about anything you cover?

• 29:04Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 29:05Sam Morril?

This is so obvious, like, of course you don't, I mean, it's like writing that about a Broadway show. Yeah, they don't tweak the dialogue.

• 29:10Mark Normand?

  Right, right.

• 29:11Sam Morril?

  This is the show.

• 29:12Mark Normand?

  This is the show.

• 29:13Speaker 00

Yeah, but you have to accept that there is an aura of mystery about it that will always be, even to us.

• 29:19Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 29:20Speaker 00

You know, and that's, that's part of it. I, I personally think that you should just believe what you believe to be true. However you think, you know what I mean? Like, we have these conversations, like, if they see something that you've done before, are they disappointed? And I go, if it's, not if it's a good bit, and comedians could argue that, and it's somewhat generational. Like, to me, like, if I'm gonna see somebody that I really like, I'm coming once, you know?

• 29:49Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 29:50Speaker 00

I'm not gonna go see somebody, no matter how much I like them, four times in my life.

• 29:55Mark Normand?

  No, no.

• 29:55Speaker 00

Would you go to any show four times?

• 29:57Sam Morril?

If you're a deadhead, you go to, you follow that.

• 29:59Speaker 00

  Yeah, okay.

• 29:59Sam Morril?

But, yeah, but not for this. I mean, it is weird. I also think with that whole, you know, seeming in the moment, there's people like George Carlin, who you're like, this is clearly a show. And then there's Patrice O'Neal, who you're like, this is, this is, feels very conversational, maybe this is off the cuff. There was this allusion with a guy, with Patrice.

• 30:17Speaker 00

  Right.

• 30:17Sam Morril?

But I don't think every comic... Cares about that. I don't think Carlin cared about that. He would come out and do it. You're like, yeah, this is, even at the end when he'd come out and do like, almost like poetry.

• 30:26Speaker 00

  Yeah, right.

• 30:27Sam Morril?

This is clearly a thing he's doing, you know?

• 30:29Mark Normand?

Yeah, that was one of the few things I didn't like about Carlin. I, you know, I'm a huge fan. I know all his stuff, but I thought he got a little self-indulgent. And he was like, this is for me, not you. And you're like, nah, nah, nah, they're still here. You need them to be here. It's for them a little. I don't like that attitude.

• 30:44Speaker 00

It's all for them. I, I agree with you. I didn't like it either. But whatever, you know.

• 30:49Sam Morril?

The last special was good. The last special was really good, I thought.

• 30:51Mark Normand?

You know, he's got some of the best of him. I see a lot of his stuff being copied all day long, but.

• 30:56Sam Morril?

In both sides, politically, acting like he's talking.

• 30:59Mark Normand?

  Yeah, that's awesome.

• 31:00Sam Morril?

  Kind of an incredible skill.

• 31:01Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 31:02Sam Morril?

You're like, wow, everyone felt heard by social commentary?

• 31:06Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 31:07Sam Morril?

How many comics can achieve that?

• 31:08Mark Normand?

I know. I know. Cause he was very like pro-abortion, but he was also like, stop telling me what I can't say, you pussy. The pussification of America. I'm gonna say this and that. And so, yeah, he was hitting everything.

• 31:20Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 31:21Mark Normand?

Yeah, he was. I saw him once, live, and boy, did he flip out on the crowd.

• 31:26Speaker 00

  Really?

• 31:27Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 31:27Speaker 00

We saw him in Mississippi, didn't you?

• 31:28Mark Normand?

I saw him in a casino in Mississippi. That's all I could afford.

• 31:31Speaker 00

Oh, man. The poor guy. Imagine what he'd be today if you just changed the, if we could crack the time tunnel, you know? Because he was very frustrated. Because in his day, which was also my day, if you're just a comic, you kinda didn't make it.

• 31:50Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 31:51Speaker 00

You know? And now, there's no such thing as that. If you're a successful comic, you're as big as anybody.

• 31:57Sam Morril?

He wanted to act, right? I mean, that was.

• 31:58Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 32:00Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 32:02Speaker 00

  Why?

• 32:05Mark Normand?

Well, Danny Kaye was his hero, apparently.

• 32:07Speaker 00

  You're not Danny Kaye.

• 32:08Mark Normand?

  No, but he wanted.

• 32:09Speaker 00

You gotta be who you, yeah.

• 32:11Mark Normand?

  Those dumb limericks.

• 32:12Speaker 00

  You got this gift.

• 32:12Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 32:13Speaker 00

You got this gift. But it wasn't that big a deal. It was, it was, it was a little, you, you were kind of an upscale carny.

• 32:22Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 32:23Speaker 00

  You know?

• 32:24Mark Normand?

Well, that's what I'm saying. Those people, he needed it. A lot of these guys who quit, they don't need it. Carlin did it till he dropped dead. So did Rickles and, and Rodney. They needed stand-up.

• 32:35Speaker 00

  Right, right.

• 32:35Sam Morril?

What was that like when you did the Rodney comedian special? That, that looked pretty cool.

• 32:39Speaker 00

Well, it was great. I mean, I didn't think it was anything at the time. I just, they said, "You wanna be on this special as a bunch of comics?" So you go, you know, okay.

• 32:48Mark Normand?

  HBO, HBO.

• 32:49Speaker 00

Yeah, it was pretty, it was, it was a thing. But the fun thing was then Rodney and I became friends after that. He loved young guys.

• 32:58Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 32:58Speaker 00

  Loved them. And, uh...

• 33:00Sam Morril?

You were trying so hard to slip into Kevin Spacey.

• 33:02Mark Normand?

I was thinking of a Kevin Spacey joke there. I held my tongue. Boy, you know me well.

• 33:08Speaker 00

You need the Kill Tony sunglasses. Can't do it without the sunglasses.

• 33:12Mark Normand?

  Those are my powers.

• 33:13Speaker 00

I don't wanna really be here, sunglasses.

• 33:15Sam Morril?

Was Rodney, what was he, what was he like to hang out with?

• 33:17Speaker 00

He was fantastic. He was so deep and thoughtful and, uh, loved comedy, loved stand-up. But he could go off on you, too.

• 33:27Mark Normand?

  Mmm.

• 33:28Speaker 00

You know, like, one time I remember, you know, I lived in New York and he was in LA and, uh... He was having a birthday party and, uh, I left him a message or... I can't, I'm in New York, I can't, I can't be there. And he got very upset.

• 33:45Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 33:46Speaker 00

You know, and left me this, this very, uh, upset message.

• 33:51Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 33:51Sam Morril?

  Angry Rodney.

• 33:53Speaker 00

Yeah. Oh, no, all the substances. Who knows who was really talking there.

• 33:57Mark Normand?

  The guy gets no respect.

• 33:57Speaker 00

But I talked to, uh, Carlin like two weeks before he passed.

• 34:01Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah?

• 34:01Speaker 00

Yeah, he had just done the special.

• 34:03Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 34:03Speaker 00

And I called him to tell him how great it was. It was a great one, that last one.

• 34:07Mark Normand?

  It was great.

• 34:08Speaker 00

And then The Times, when he passed, The Times asked me to write the obit.

• 34:12Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 34:13Speaker 00

Uh, in the opinion page. And, uh, and I did. It was a really exciting... I was so excited to be asked to do that.

• 34:20Mark Normand?

  Sure.

• 34:21Speaker 00

And, uh, I did a thing about how, um, so many comedians would say, "Well, uh, Carlin did that already."

• 34:28Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 34:29Speaker 00

And then I thought, when you get, when I get to my end and you're spiraling through the, the cosmos to whatever the next, uh, reality is, I'll realize Carlin already did it.

• 34:42Mark Normand?

I remember a funny thing on the news when he died. I was watching the news and he was like, "71? Who dies at 71?" That was your angle on it. I remember thinking that was funny.

• 34:49Speaker 00

  I said that?

• 34:50Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 34:51Speaker 00

  I'm 71 now.

• 34:52Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 34:54Sam Morril?

You're very healthy for a comedian.

• 34:56Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 34:56Sam Morril?

  It's, I mean, it's impressive.

• 34:58Mark Normand?

Well, you're not much of a booze bag.

• 34:59Sam Morril?

  It can be done.

• 35:00Speaker 00

You don't have anything to do all day.

• 35:02Sam Morril?

  True.

• 35:02Mark Normand?

  That's true. Except for this.

• 35:04Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 35:04Mark Normand?

  Thanks for doing it.

• 35:05Speaker 00

You guys do this how often?

• 35:07Sam Morril?

  Once a week.

• 35:08Mark Normand?

Once a week. Not bad, not bad.

• 35:10Speaker 00

And did you think this, when you started this, did you think this is a thing?

• 35:13Sam Morril?

No, we started during COVID and he, we were on Zoom having a cocktail on the other end because we were just bored and it was an excuse to catch up.

• 35:19Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 35:20Sam Morril?

And we recorded it and then some people liked it, so.

• 35:23Speaker 00

So what is it now? What, what is the, uh, give me the basics of what this is.

• 35:28Mark Normand?

I mean, this is, it's a TV show, basically. This, this'll get more views than Fallon.

• 35:31Speaker 00

  Wow.

• 35:32Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 35:32Speaker 00

And you make any money doing this?

• 35:34Mark Normand?

Yeah, but it's mostly for the tickets. You sell the tickets.

• 35:37Sam Morril?

Good, good way to plug the gigs.

• 35:38Speaker 00

  Right.

• 35:39Mark Normand?

  This'll sell your beacon.

• 35:40Sam Morril?

  He'll sell the beacon.

• 35:41Speaker 00

  I think we'll manage.

• 35:42Sam Morril?

  He'll do, he'll do alright.

• 35:45Sam Morril?

Well, you say that like it's all been done with Carlin. I re-watch Seinfeld all the time and it's amazing where I'm like, oh, the amount, it's like a Beatles thing where you're just like, how much, how many fucking premises did they take?

• 35:56Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 35:56Sam Morril?

They got so much where I'm like, we can't touch this, we can't, I mean, I think all the time, even to the, when you're doing the tip jar, we're talking about the tips earlier.

• 36:04Speaker 00

  Oh, yeah.

• 36:05Sam Morril?

George trying to make sure they see.

• 36:06Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 36:06Sam Morril?

  So many little things.

• 36:08Speaker 00

  Yeah, yeah.

• 36:08Sam Morril?

I went on a date with a girl the other night who was a bad laugher. I'm like, that's the menagee towa episode, you know?

• 36:13Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 36:14Sam Morril?

  So much has been done.

• 36:15Mark Normand?

That's true. My wife has man hands.

• 36:19Speaker 00

Sebastian doing Jeff Bezos' laugh is really funny. You ever see him do that?

• 36:24Mark Normand?

  No, pull that up.

• 36:25Speaker 00

  It's so funny.

• 36:27Mark Normand?

  Man.

• 36:28Sam Morril?

When you discover new comedians, is it usually through Instagram or YouTube?

• 36:32Speaker 00

  Yeah, yeah.

• 36:34Mark Normand?

There you go. That's the way to do it now. The internet works.

• 36:38Speaker 00

Yeah. He does a whole bit about his transformation.

• 36:41Mark Normand?

  Hmm. Oh, that's funny.

• 36:44Speaker 00

It's very funny, but the laugh, it's pretty brutal.

• 36:47Mark Normand?

  I don't think I've heard.

• 36:48Speaker 00

  He destroys.

• 36:49Mark Normand?

  Bezos' laugh?

• 36:50Speaker 00

He's just got a laugh of a guy who becomes a billionaire on the internet.

• 36:54Mark Normand?

  Okay.

• 36:56Speaker 00

  You know?

• 36:56Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 36:57Speaker 00

I always think like the way God works is like he'll give you, nobody gets a straight flush.

• 37:03Mark Normand?

  Hmm.

• 37:03Speaker 00

Right? There's gonna be some bad cards in there, you know, like.

• 37:06Mark Normand?

  Right. Like LeBron is balding.

• 37:08Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 37:09Mark Normand?

So you're like, alright, we got, he's human.

• 37:12Sam Morril?

  Jordan's got a gambling problem.

• 37:13Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 37:14Sam Morril?

  You can't have it all.

• 37:15Speaker 00

Nobody gets the whole five cards.

• 37:20Mark Normand?

Bezos, which was fun air. I don't know what I referred to him in a special Bezos. I remember saying, "This Bezos."

• 42:15Speaker 03

He was taking people around the office. He was laughing, you know, with this weird laugh he had.

• 42:31Speaker 03

Bald and ripped and he's in shape. He's hit now. So I just thought the difference in like when someone first starts out and then $400 billion worth.

• 42:44Speaker 03

Aesthetically. I thought it was a funny, uh... You know, I'm basically kind of ripping the guy to shreds.

• 42:52Speaker 03

  Bezos was 30.

• 42:54Mark Normand?

He's like his name wrong is funny already.

• 42:56Speaker 00

Yeah. Somebody, one of the B-movie guys says, "Let's do another B-movie and the head of the hive will be Jeff Bezos."

• 43:03Mark Normand?

Ah, perfect. Get Cardi B in there.

• 43:07Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 43:07Mark Normand?

Yeah, you can do a whole thing. It, it, I'm jealous of these guys. You have a little more of this now. I feel like when you started, you were pretty front and center, but these guys who are free up there, they can move and do, I, I don't know if I could do the movements.

• 43:20Speaker 00

  Of course you can.

• 43:21Mark Normand?

  I know, but I'm scared. I, I, I'm too insecure.

• 43:23Speaker 00

We're all scared all the time. That's the gig.

• 43:27Mark Normand?

I just feel safe with my...

• 43:28Speaker 00

What did Hemingway say? It's not, courage isn't not being scared. It's doing it anyway.

• 43:32Mark Normand?

  Sure, sure. Alright.

• 43:34Speaker 00

  Just start moving.

• 43:35Sam Morril?

What's scared, does anything scare you about performing now or nothing?

• 43:40Mark Normand?

  Bombing?

• 43:40Speaker 00

No. I mean, I still get buzzed, you know, before you go on.

• 43:46Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 43:47Speaker 00

And you think, I don't know. Uh, this Portugal thing, when it, this, they wanted you Portugal, that made me go, Portugal? I got a little scared.

• 43:56Mark Normand?

  Oh, okay.

• 43:56Speaker 00

But having talked with him about all the places he did, you know, how crazy that sounds to someone born in the 50s? I did a gig in Berlin, Berlin!

• 44:07Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 44:07Mark Normand?

  Yeah, that's crazy.

• 44:09Sam Morril?

  Dude, it's basically Williamsburg.

• 44:10Mark Normand?

But yeah, I mean, everywhere is, they, they want American comedy. Where the, where the...

• 44:14Speaker 00

Have you gone to Asia? Have you done Asia?

• 44:16Mark Normand?

  I did, uh, China, yeah.

• 44:18Speaker 00

  Wow.

• 44:19Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 44:19Speaker 00

  I did Singapore.

• 44:20Sam Morril?

  How was that?

• 44:20Speaker 00

  It was great.

• 44:21Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 44:22Speaker 00

  It was great.

• 44:22Sam Morril?

That's what I mean, everywhere, they know what they're in for.

• 44:25Speaker 00

  Right, right.

• 44:26Sam Morril?

They know what they're showing up to.

• 44:27Speaker 00

  Yeah, yeah, it's funny.

• 44:28Sam Morril?

Those days when they didn't sucked.

• 44:29Mark Normand?

  That's true.

• 44:30Sam Morril?

When you're on stage and they're like, what the hell is this? And you're like, I guess YouTube, when we started, YouTube wasn't a big thing.

• 44:36Mark Normand?

  No, no.

• 44:36Sam Morril?

So they didn't really have good clips of us.

• 44:39Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 44:40Sam Morril?

To promote the weekend. We were just there and they're, they're going to see comedy.

• 44:42Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 44:43Speaker 00

  When, you did Stockholm, right?

• 44:45Sam Morril?

I did do it this time, yeah, last time.

• 44:46Speaker 00

Do they still clap in unison there?

• 44:48Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 44:49Sam Morril?

They do it in Milan, too. Like, at the end of a run, it's almost like an old school late night set where everyone just applauds and you're like, alright.

• 44:55Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 44:56Sam Morril?

  This is weird.

• 44:56Mark Normand?

Amsterdam's like that. When I was in Amsterdam, they were like, we had three comics who were very funny, very famous, and they, all three of them flipped out on the crowd.

• 45:03Sam Morril?

I know all three, because they told me the same thing. But I knew what I was in for, because I, I played there before, but even then, I was like, God, they just don't laugh.

• 45:09Mark Normand?

  They don't laugh, they go...

• 45:10Speaker 00

Have you ever flipped on a crowd? I never heard of this.

• 45:12Mark Normand?

  Only the hecklers, hecklers.

• 45:14Speaker 00

Oh, hecklers, that's not the crowd.

• 45:15Sam Morril?

You get annoyed when they're bad.

• 45:16Mark Normand?

I get annoyed, but I try to keep it together. I don't go full Michael Richards, but, uh, you know, I'll, I'll, uh, you know, get a heckler, I, I go red, I lose it.

• 45:26Speaker 00

  Hecklers are fine.

• 45:27Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 45:28Speaker 00

But I could never get it. It's just like, uh, I feel like a guy picking a lock.

• 45:32Mark Normand?

  Nah, right.

• 45:34Speaker 00

Like, well, that's not the right one.

• 45:35Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 45:36Sam Morril?

Yeah, you gotta stay cool. I mean, you lose the fight if you go red.

• 45:39Mark Normand?

  Completely.

• 45:40Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 45:41Mark Normand?

Oh, man, I did a joke last night. I'm working on this new bit about casinos, and I'm like, why do all the games have to be numerical? How about pick a color? And a lady goes, you can do that with roulette. And I was like... Ah, well, you just killed my whole joke. That killed. It's like her popping a hole in my whole bubble.

• 45:59Sam Morril?

  Right.

• 46:00Mark Normand?

Crushed, so I gotta go back to the lab, but boy, that was painful.

• 46:03Sam Morril?

Yeah, you spent a whole day on it, you're like, that's just wrong.

• 46:05Mark Normand?

Yes, I did. I had a whole sheet and she ruined everything with one comment. So, that's stand-up.

• 46:11Sam Morril?

He had a whole thing about a friend and about, he didn't know what Slim Pickens was. He thought it was, and then I was like, oh, it was a person. It was a person named Slim. I killed my whole bit. I was like, that was a, I was like, he thought it was a person. I was like, wait, it was a person.

• 46:23Mark Normand?

Oh, I didn't know that either.

• 46:24Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 46:25Mark Normand?

Damn, that's a great name. Slim Pickens. I like that. Jazz, blues?

• 46:30Speaker 00

  It was, uh...

• 46:33Sam Morril?

  An actor?

• 46:33Speaker 00

Peter Sellers, uh... Doctor Strangelove, yeah. He rides the atom bomb down.

• 46:39Mark Normand?

  Ah.

• 46:40Speaker 00

  With this cowboy hat, woo.

• 46:41Mark Normand?

  Oh, wow.

• 46:44Speaker 00

  Also, uh, Blazing Saddles?

• 46:46Sam Morril?

  Oh, shit.

• 46:47Mark Normand?

  Maybe.

• 46:47Speaker 00

  I think.

• 46:48Mark Normand?

  Yeah. How about that?

• 46:51Speaker 00

Yeah, there he is on the right.

• 46:52Sam Morril?

Brian Hampton was telling me on the road, you see a lot of movies. That's like part of your routine?

• 46:58Speaker 00

  One.

• 46:58Sam Morril?

  One?

• 46:59Speaker 00

Yeah. Yeah, it's part of my, uh, whole, uh, system.

• 47:05Sam Morril?

  I love that.

• 47:06Speaker 00

Yeah. It's nice. Any movie, a good movie's good and a bad movie's just as fun.

• 47:12Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 47:13Speaker 00

You know, I saw Frankenstein, um, on Netflix.

• 47:17Mark Normand?

  I just watched it too.

• 47:18Speaker 00

Which is very good, but I thought, boy, watching this with some comics would have been so great.

• 47:23Mark Normand?

Oh, yeah. I had a ball watching that.

• 47:26Speaker 00

Cause it's just trying so hard to be so, you know, gothic and eternal.

• 47:32Mark Normand?

  Dramatic and sincere.

• 47:33Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 47:34Mark Normand?

Yeah, my, my joke was, A, the woman kinda fell for him, the girl in it? And I was like, a woman will let anything slide as long as you're tall. Cause the guy's like six, nine or whatever, and she's like, he's all torn up and mutilated, but she's like, he's beautiful. There's something about him. Like, he's just tall. Shut up.

• 47:50Speaker 00

I thought, this looks like how the Blue Man Group got started.

• 47:54Sam Morril?

Did you see, um, Roof Man, this new one?

• 47:57Speaker 00

  No.

• 47:58Sam Morril?

  It's great.

• 47:59Speaker 00

  Roof Man?

• 48:00Sam Morril?

Yeah, it's, it's a true story. It's Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst. It's so good.

• 48:04Speaker 00

Oh, yeah, I wanna see this.

• 48:05Sam Morril?

  I loved it.

• 48:06Mark Normand?

Yeah, crazy premise. I looked it up after you told me about it.

• 48:09Sam Morril?

  Crazy story.

• 48:10Mark Normand?

How about that? See, movies are great. They got a lot of great movies now, but nobody's going to see them. They're all losing money.

• 48:17Speaker 00

And are they ever gonna go? Why would you go?

• 48:21Mark Normand?

  Well, you go, right?

• 48:22Speaker 00

If you have nothing in the world to do.

• 48:25Mark Normand?

But don't you love the movie theater experience?

• 48:27Speaker 00

  Yes.

• 48:28Sam Morril?

But I bet you have a good movie set up at home.

• 48:30Speaker 00

  No, just a big TV.

• 48:32Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 48:33Mark Normand?

Interesting. But if they're gone, we're gonna miss them. It's like your grandma.

• 48:38Speaker 00

  You miss AM radio?

• 48:42Speaker 00

  A little bit.

• 48:43Mark Normand?

  All right, all right.

• 48:44Speaker 00

  BMW, maybe.

• 48:45Mark Normand?

  That's all I got.

• 48:46Speaker 00

  It's an old car.

• 48:46Mark Normand?

Yeah. All right, well, let's look at FM.

• 48:50Speaker 00

What are these questions that I, I've tried to answer? What is that about?

• 48:54Mark Normand?

We only go to that if it's really bad.

• 48:56Speaker 00

Oh, if you run out of gas.

• 48:56Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 48:57Sam Morril?

  But people like the peeves.

• 48:59Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 48:59Sam Morril?

They like the peeves, though, I think. We could do a peeve.

• 49:03Speaker 00

Well, that's our whole career, I mean.

• 49:05Mark Normand?

  That's true. That's why we've done.

• 49:07Speaker 00

I would say pet peeve, that phrase would be the most annoying thing I could think of.

• 49:11Sam Morril?

I don't know where it even comes from.

• 49:12Mark Normand?

I know. I think it was a character in Blazing Saddles. Pet peeve. Yeah, I don't know, but... We think of, you know, a new one pops up every two days, so we just started doing it.

• 49:24Sam Morril?

Yeah, and Rex, people like the Rex, too, so I mean, I'm sure you have... You do, you see a ton of movies, so I figure Jerry's gonna have good movie Rex.

• 49:31Mark Normand?

I thought the ending of Frankenstein was weak. Just the pushing the boat out, I was like, this is it?

• 49:37Speaker 00

  It was stuck.

• 49:38Mark Normand?

  I know, but...

• 49:39Speaker 00

He's pushed it out, now it's free.

• 49:41Mark Normand?

  Ah, I guess it's a metaphor.

• 49:43Speaker 00

  He's so strong, too.

• 49:45Sam Morril?

  What's, what's like an all-time movie, Jerry Rec? Like, what's a movie?

• 49:49Speaker 00

  All-time?

• 49:49Sam Morril?

  Yeah, any all-time movie.

• 49:50Speaker 00

That's easy, I mean, The Graduate.

• 49:52Mark Normand?

  Ah, Mike Nichols.

• 49:54Sam Morril?

  That's a great one.

• 49:55Speaker 00

Every frame. And you could watch it as a comedy or as a drama.

• 50:01Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 50:01Speaker 00

There's so many unbelievably funny things.

• 50:04Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 50:05Speaker 00

  And...

• 50:05Mark Normand?

You know, she was 39? How great is that? There's all, there's all bad.

• 50:09Speaker 00

She was 39 and he was 27, I think.

• 50:11Sam Morril?

And Gene Hackman was originally Mr. Robinson.

• 50:13Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 50:14Sam Morril?

And he got fired. He was like, he was, he was freaking out. He was like, I'm gonna get fired. And Dustin Hoffman's like, no, I'm gonna get fired. And then Gene Hackman got fired.

• 50:21Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 50:22Speaker 00

Well, Murray Hamilton, to me, Mario Joyner and I have like a movie language. It's mostly Glenn Gary, Glenn Ross.

• 50:30Mark Normand?

  Yep.

• 50:30Speaker 00

  Jerky Boys.

• 50:34Speaker 00

And just anything that's close to any of those lines.

• 50:36Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 50:37Speaker 00

But, uh, and, um, Murray Hamilton when he plays the mayor in Jaws.

• 50:42Mark Normand?

  Uh huh.

• 50:43Speaker 00

Thank you, Mr. Quint. We will take it under advisement.

• 50:47Speaker 00

But Murray Hamilton with Dustin Hoffman unwrapping the cigar. How old are you now?

• 50:53Mark Normand?

Oh, yes. The best scene in Graduate, or my favorite scene, is at the end where they run out of the church.

• 50:59Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 50:59Mark Normand?

He steals her from the guy. They're gonna live the rest of their lives together on the bus. They're all excited.

• 51:04Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 51:04Mark Normand?

Then they look at each other and go, ah, now what? And that's marriage.

• 51:08Speaker 00

Here's the story on that take.

• 51:10Mark Normand?

  Okay.

• 51:10Speaker 00

Um, Mike Nichols, the end of the scene was they were supposed to look at each other and smile, and that was supposed to be it.

• 51:15Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 51:16Speaker 00

But he didn't like that, so he just kept rolling.

• 51:20Mark Normand?

  Ah.

• 51:20Speaker 00

  Knowing that they would eventually.

• 51:23Mark Normand?

  Come down.

• 51:23Speaker 00

Come down, and that would be a better ending.

• 51:26Mark Normand?

  Way better.

• 51:27Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 51:27Mark Normand?

  Cause that's life.

• 51:28Speaker 00

  Yeah, yeah.

• 51:30Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 51:30Speaker 00

There's that look is so great. And the Alfa Romeo is so amazing in that.

• 51:34Sam Morril?

  Dustin Hoffman.

• 51:34Speaker 00

  Duetto spider.

• 51:35Sam Morril?

Dustin Hoffman, sixties and seventies, that run is insane.

• 51:39Speaker 00

  Insane.

• 51:39Sam Morril?

  So many good movies.

• 51:40Speaker 00

  Yeah, yeah.

• 51:42Sam Morril?

Like even some under the radar. Oh, my god.

• 51:44Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 51:47Speaker 00

Uh, here's an interesting bit about, uh, Lost in America, the great Albert Brooks film.

• 51:54Mark Normand?

  Is that the, the RV?

• 51:55Speaker 00

Yeah, that's the RV. Um, when she loses the money in the casino.

• 52:02Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 52:02Speaker 00

Which I played it, uh, for my daughter, cause it's one of my favorite movies, and I wanted to show her all my favorite movies. And she said, it's pretty sad after she loses the money.

• 52:12Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 52:12Speaker 00

And they knew that. And, uh, I talked to David Geffen about this. He said, they, they said, we gotta, we need a funny scene here in the back half of this movie where it's dying.

• 52:23Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 52:23Speaker 00

And so it was like six months after they had made it, they came up with the, um, Gary Marshall, The Desert and Has Heart scene.

• 52:31Mark Normand?

  Ah.

• 52:32Speaker 00

And reshoot it and plugged it in, so they had a funny scene in the back half of the movie.

• 52:37Mark Normand?

  Wow, you need a button.

• 52:38Speaker 00

Yeah, cause it was deadly after she loses the money.

• 52:40Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 52:41Sam Morril?

Did they focus test it, or do you think they just watched it in?

• 52:43Speaker 00

  Probably just watched it.

• 52:44Mark Normand?

  Damn.

• 52:45Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 52:45Mark Normand?

He's a genius. He doesn't, I feel like he doesn't get his due.

• 52:48Speaker 00

  Oh, yes, he does.

• 52:50Mark Normand?

  You think so?

• 52:50Speaker 00

  Oh, he's idolized.

• 52:51Mark Normand?

  I hope so.

• 52:52Speaker 00

  Oh, he's the greatest.

• 52:54Mark Normand?

  Yeah, the documentary is good.

• 52:55Sam Morril?

I think this might mean like, super young people may not know, because

• 52:57Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 52:58Sam Morril?

a lot of it's from like, twenty, thirty years ago, but it is all great. It all still holds up.

• 53:02Speaker 00

  All great.

• 53:02Sam Morril?

  Defending your life is incredible.

• 53:03Mark Normand?

  Incredible.

• 53:04Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 53:04Sam Morril?

  Rip Torn in that movie?

• 53:06Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 53:06Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 53:07Mark Normand?

And his, his, uh, carsons are great. He does like a, he'll do like a stand-up segment.

• 53:11Speaker 00

Now, again, we just want to get into this.

• 53:14Mark Normand?

  Bring it on.

• 53:14Speaker 00

  Okay.

• 53:18Speaker 00

  I don't know.

• 53:19Mark Normand?

  No, what? Come on!

• 53:21Speaker 00

The, the, we talked about the, the physical challenge of comedy.

• 53:26Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 53:26Speaker 00

Which I don't think people think about. If I think about some of the really funny people, funniest that I've ever seen, uh, Michael Richards, or, uh, Sid Caesar. I've heard a lot of people tell me these guys like are crazy strong guys.

• 53:40Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 53:41Speaker 00

Physically strong. And everybody's pretty strong when they're young. And then, one of the things that will destroy your comedy is when you don't have any physical strength. It's because there's an energy, comedy is, comedy is a concentration of energy.

• 53:58Mark Normand?

  Mmm, okay.

• 54:00Speaker 00

You know, it's like a dense moment of energy. A punchline is like a punch. It's like throwing a punch.

• 54:06Mark Normand?

  I think you were right.

• 54:06Speaker 00

And it takes energy to do it. So I think what happens to comedy, a lot of comedy people, as they age, they just don't physically have the

• 54:17Mark Normand?

  Mmm.

• 54:18Speaker 00

  the juice, you know?

• 54:19Mark Normand?

Yeah, I think you were right not to bring this up.

• 54:21Speaker 00

  Why?

• 54:22Mark Normand?

No, I'm just kidding. But, uh...

• 54:24Speaker 00

  No, but I mean...

• 54:24Sam Morril?

You're right, you don't see, like, Jim Carrey's not making stuff right now, you know?

• 54:28Speaker 00

  Look at his physical abilities.

• 54:30Mark Normand?

  One of the best.

• 54:31Speaker 00

  When he was young. Incredible.

• 54:32Mark Normand?

  It's incredible.

• 54:33Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 54:33Mark Normand?

  Jerry Lewis.

• 54:34Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 54:35Mark Normand?

  Similar, yeah. Hmm, yeah.

• 54:37Speaker 00

That's just a thing of comedy that I've noticed over the years of... Don't, don't let yourself become a mess, or it gets harder. It gets harder anyway.

• 54:46Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 54:46Speaker 00

As you get older, you just run out of gas as a human being.

• 54:50Sam Morril?

But your generation seemed pretty unhealthy.

• 54:53Speaker 00

  Yeah, pretty unhealthy.

• 54:54Sam Morril?

I mean, ladies are just known for like coke in the clubs and booing and partying.

• 54:57Speaker 00

  That claimed 90%

• 54:59Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 55:00Speaker 00

Of the, of the generation. On both sides of me, drugs.

• 55:05Mark Normand?

Hmm, yeah, and you never wanted to dabble?

• 55:08Speaker 00

  No.

• 55:09Mark Normand?

  Not curious?

• 55:10Speaker 00

  No, about what?

• 55:11Mark Normand?

Coke? It looks like a good time. I've never done it either, but...

• 55:15Sam Morril?

  We've never done it, yeah.

• 55:16Mark Normand?

I probably will at your age.

• 55:22Mark Normand?

  Adderall? Nothing? Blue chew?

• 55:25Speaker 00

What, what is? What, what is, where is your, where are you suffering from lack of stimulation?

• 55:32Mark Normand?

Wow, I just, it's a, you want to have a good time, you want the party to go to an eleven. Well, you like drinking?

• 55:38Speaker 00

  Not really.

• 55:39Mark Normand?

  Oh, okay.

• 55:40Speaker 00

I mean, a glass of wine with an Italian meal.

• 55:42Mark Normand?

  Very nice.

• 55:43Speaker 00

But I mean, I, I don't understand that you don't, you're not getting enough with what we do.

• 55:49Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 55:50Speaker 00

It's so challenging, it's so hell raising, night after night, up and down, you know?

• 55:57Mark Normand?

But that's my, you're proving my point, you're, you're, you're up and down, up and down.

• 56:00Speaker 00

I don't need any more stimulation, I can barely handle what I'm getting.

• 56:03Mark Normand?

  Well, that's a gift.

• 56:04Sam Morril?

This is a skill, he's irritated in an optimistic way.

• 56:07Mark Normand?

  Right, yes, that fuels you.

• 56:10Speaker 00

That is a great comedy challenge to give yourself. Do a bit about how much you love something and make it funny.

• 56:16Mark Normand?

  Ooh.

• 56:17Speaker 00

I've done a couple of those, and that's really funny.

• 56:19Sam Morril?

What do you love that's funny?

• 56:21Speaker 00

Coffee. I have a whole thing about how much I love coffee.

• 56:24Mark Normand?

  That's interesting.

• 56:25Speaker 00

  Because it understands the brutality.

• 56:28Speaker 00

And I had a whole Pop-Tart bit, and that was the first time I, I tried to do it, I said, I wonder if I could do a bit that's not negative in any way.

• 56:36Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 56:36Speaker 00

It's just positive about how much you love something.

• 56:39Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 56:39Speaker 00

And it's a, you know, it's really flipping the, the, the... The universe a little bit.

• 56:44Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 56:45Sam Morril?

The Africans got some of those.

• 56:46Mark Normand?

  Yeah?

• 56:47Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 56:47Mark Normand?

  Hot Pocket?

• 56:48Sam Morril?

  A lot of food stuff.

• 56:49Mark Normand?

  Yeah?

• 56:49Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 56:49Mark Normand?

That's true. Bacon, he's got a whole bacon chunk.

• 56:52Sam Morril?

  The bacon chunk is great.

• 56:53Mark Normand?

Yeah, the Pop-Tart bit, when you said the box, oh, has more nutrition than the... I was like, how did he think of that? Because I was like, how's he gonna wrap this thing up? And that was kind of the big ribbon on it.

• 57:06Speaker 00

I can't even remember that bit.

• 57:07Mark Normand?

Oh, I remember that and the one, the golf bit. Those really stick in my head. Go out, leave family.

• 57:11Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 57:12Mark Normand?

That's the guy who stared at a piece of paper for three hours.

• 57:15Speaker 00

  Yeah, yeah.

• 57:15Mark Normand?

Because you're like, I'm out of idea, wait, G? Oh? That's a real, like, stuck in a prison cell.

• 57:22Speaker 00

That, is that, that, you want to talk about Coke? I mean, when I saw that... You can't eat Pop-Tarts, that's way worse for you.

• 57:30Mark Normand?

  Yeah, it's true.

• 57:31Speaker 00

Those letters, I don't know whether I got leave family or get out, leave family. But when I saw that, I had to, I had to leave the house. And just walk out into the air and go, oh my God.

• 57:45Mark Normand?

  Yeah, and that kills.

• 57:47Speaker 00

  Yeah, it's fun.

• 57:48Mark Normand?

  That was a big bit.

• 57:49Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 57:49Mark Normand?

I've had like two of those in my life, and I hope to have more. The birth of my child, nothing on those moments.

• 57:56Speaker 00

  Nothing?

• 57:57Mark Normand?

On those go-out-leave-family moments. That's, that's really where I feel good about myself.

• 58:03Speaker 00

  What, I don't understand what you're saying.

• 58:04Mark Normand?

I'm saying my kid, nothing on that, love-wise.

• 58:09Speaker 00

Do you understand what he's saying?

• 58:10Mark Normand?

I'm saying the birth of my child has got nothing on writing that big bit.

• 58:14Speaker 00

Oh, right, right. Do you have any bits on the birth?

• 58:18Mark Normand?

Oh, I got, yeah, I got a big baby chunk.

• 58:20Speaker 00

  Oh, good, for you.

• 58:21Mark Normand?

Yeah, about 15 minutes on it.

• 58:23Sam Morril?

Yeah, I would hope that your kid is more happy, gives you more happiness than your pedo drinking junk, you know?

• 58:29Mark Normand?

  That's my bread and butter.

• 58:30Sam Morril?

That's your bread and butter. Well, I want to know this too, because you kind of settled down later in life, you know? When did you know it was time to settle down? How did, how did you know?

• 58:39Speaker 00

  Um, the boredom.

• 58:42Mark Normand?

  Mmm.

• 58:43Speaker 00

The boredom of the routine of what you're doing. And you just go, I, I need, I need another world. I can't live in this world anymore.

• 58:52Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 58:53Speaker 00

And I, and I think, I mean, we were talking about people that can't hang with stand-up beyond a certain point. But that's, that's more, you get kicked out. But that's not a good analogy, but, um...

• 59:08Speaker 00

I, I said to Tom Papa, I said, you know, he got married, he wasn't gonna have kids.

• 59:12Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 59:13Speaker 00

I said, "You're, you're in the parking lot at Disneyland, sitting in the car."

• 59:17Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 59:19Speaker 00

There's a, there's an, the idea that sex only works on that side, on the fun side, that there's not another side to it.

• 59:27Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 59:28Speaker 00

There's a whole other side to it, a whole other universe.

• 59:31Mark Normand?

  Yeah, that's true.

• 59:33Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 59:34Mark Normand?

And you told me to stop watching porn, and that helps the sex.

• 59:37Speaker 00

  I did?

• 59:38Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 59:38Speaker 00

  Oh.

• 59:39Mark Normand?

Well, I was watching it at the coffee shop, but, uh...

• 59:41Speaker 00

I was trying to converse with you, I guess.

• 59:45Mark Normand?

It was right at the end.

• 59:46Speaker 00

  Mark, I'm over here.

• 59:48Mark Normand?

But yeah, that does, uh, you know, revamp a little bit.

• 59:52Speaker 00

Right, right. Okay, good for you.

• 59:57Speaker 00

I'll tell you an embarrassing thing, here's, this is completely humiliating.

• 1:00:01Mark Normand?

  All right.

• 1:00:01Speaker 00

We went on a safari in Africa, which I did not wanna go at all. I really, really was objecting to it, but you have to go, if you can afford it.

• 1:00:10Mark Normand?

  I went.

• 1:00:11Speaker 00

  You are forced to go.

• 1:00:12Mark Normand?

  Honeymoon.

• 1:00:13Speaker 00

Yeah, and I had a good time.

• 1:00:15Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:00:17Speaker 00

  And I got nothing, I don't have.

• 1:00:19Mark Normand?

Same, same, I was like, "I'm gonna get a bit out of this," and I got nothing.

• 1:00:22Speaker 00

My wife is saying to me, "Oh, you're gonna have so much on this," it's so embarrassing.

• 1:00:26Sam Morril?

That's also when you never get a bit, though.

• 1:00:27Mark Normand?

  I know!

• 1:00:28Sam Morril?

When someone tells you, "You're gonna leave with so much material," you're like, yeah.

• 1:00:31Mark Normand?

  The pressure's on.

• 1:00:32Sam Morril?

It's like when you're on a date and they're like, "Don't, you better not do a joke about me." I'm like, "I won't."

• 1:00:36Mark Normand?

  Yeah, right, there's nothing here.

• 1:00:37Sam Morril?

  There's nothing here.

• 1:00:38Speaker 00

I always say, "I wish it was that easy."

• 1:00:39Mark Normand?

I know. But safari, I, I kept thinking of Chris Rock's bit, you know, where he's on a safari, then he realized there was a white family behind hunting him, you know?

• 1:00:48Speaker 00

  Oh, yeah, that's funny.

• 1:00:49Mark Normand?

I was like, "I'll never top that."

• 1:00:50Speaker 00

There's a lot of good ones.

• 1:00:52Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:53Speaker 00

I thought, I actually, so desperate, I actually been thinking, "I wonder if there's a bit in not having a bit."

• 1:00:59Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:01:00Sam Morril?

But you're driven by just jokes, which is, I think it's, not everyone, there's a reason so many people, I think, stop doing this, is 'cause they didn't lo, you clearly love jokes.

• 1:01:10Speaker 00

  Yeah, I love them.

• 1:01:10Sam Morril?

You're driven by the next joke.

• 1:01:12Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 1:01:12Sam Morril?

And I think a lot of people who are maybe great at this and just walked away, I mean, Steve Martin was great at this, Eddie Murphy, but like, maybe they didn't have the same love for jokes, you know?

• 1:01:21Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:21Sam Morril?

Or maybe, or maybe it's just the work, I don't, what do you think it is?

• 1:01:24Speaker 00

I think it's an interesting theory, and I, there are the, there are those guys, there's three of them sitting here, that just jokes are, they're like, um...

• 1:01:37Speaker 00

They're like magic tricks that you don't really this know how the trick works yourself.

• 1:01:44Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:45Speaker 00

But you like to watch it work.

• 1:01:47Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 1:01:47Speaker 00

And you can't believe it works.

• 1:01:48Sam Morril?

We're surprised mid set sometime that someone got a laugh. There's no magician who's like, oh shit, that's a trick.

• 1:01:53Mark Normand?

  That is true, yeah.

• 1:01:55Sam Morril?

  We fall into bits sometimes.

• 1:01:56Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 1:01:57Mark Normand?

  Yeah, that's a great feeling.

• 1:01:58Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 1:01:58Mark Normand?

But also frustrating because you're like, why didn't I think of that? But I'll take it.

• 1:02:01Speaker 00

Or how about when, yeah, they tell you it's funny and you don't know what's funny about it. I mean,

• 1:02:05Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:05Speaker 00

  I have jokes I don't get.

• 1:02:07Mark Normand?

Me too, me too. I don't get half your stuff.

• 1:02:11Mark Normand?

No, I totally get it. But also it didn't exist and then it exists. That's so cool. You have a magic trick. You have to get a bunny and a hat. This is just thin air. It just works.

• 1:02:19Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 1:02:20Mark Normand?

  That's even cooler.

• 1:02:21Speaker 00

I have a thing about, I don't have arguments with my wife. I don't think things that conflict with what she thinks. And I get a laugh on conflict. And I don't know, it just like, I wasn't intending to.

• 1:02:33Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:02:34Speaker 00

They just laughed. And now I really jump on it, you know, I still don't know what we're laughing at.

• 1:02:40Mark Normand?

Right. But you pause and let them laugh.

• 1:02:43Speaker 00

  I let them do it.

• 1:02:44Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:45Sam Morril?

It's funny. I saw, I don't know if we should, if I can say this, but like, I saw, well, I saw Louis doing a bit the other night and it, and it didn't work. And then he did a bit. And instead of saying it, you know, with emphasis, he did it under his breath and it killed.

• 1:02:58Mark Normand?

  Interesting.

• 1:02:59Sam Morril?

And it's amazing when he's just like, oh, if I try less on some jokes, that hits. If I try more on some jokes, that hits.

• 1:03:06Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:06Sam Morril?

You just don't know how to deliver your own writing sometimes.

• 1:03:11Speaker 00

  Of course not.

• 1:03:11Sam Morril?

  It's crazy.

• 1:03:12Speaker 00

Well, that gets back to the cooking time.

• 1:03:16Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 1:03:16Speaker 00

Conversation, which is there are things you can, like this coffee bit. It's a great bit. It's really long. It's got a lot of good stuff in it. Everything's great. But the opening is just okay. I'm not gonna live with that.

• 1:03:29Mark Normand?

  No.

• 1:03:30Speaker 00

I got a good bit here. It's gotta have a strong opening line.

• 1:03:33Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 1:03:34Speaker 00

Now, finding that, it could take me months.

• 1:03:38Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:03:38Speaker 00

But I like wasting my time. I do not like being efficient at all. I do not like, I do not want to be an efficient producer of comedy. I do not, I want to be inefficient.

• 1:03:51Mark Normand?

You don't want to be a factory pumping it out?

• 1:03:53Speaker 00

No, no, no, I want, I want it to look like, he must have spent so much time on that.

• 1:03:59Mark Normand?

  Ah, right.

• 1:04:01Speaker 00

To get all of that out of it, you know?

• 1:04:03Mark Normand?

But think about how much more you'd have if you were efficient. How much more material?

• 1:04:09Speaker 00

Yeah, but that's volume, you're talking about volume, I'm talking about detail, quality, flow, rhythm, things that are just not important, honestly.

• 1:04:20Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:04:20Speaker 00

I mean, I like, I like trying to find a segue between two things I want to do.

• 1:04:25Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:25Speaker 00

That's just perfectly smooth, there's no laugh.

• 1:04:28Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:29Speaker 00

It gets me there in five words.

• 1:04:30Sam Morril?

See, I love this in comedy, and I do feel like there was a part of our generation where it became uncool to care on this level.

• 1:04:37Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 1:04:37Sam Morril?

And, and when you put this much thought into that, they were like, Jesus, like, what are they, what is he doing?

• 1:04:41Speaker 00

  Oh, you're not cool.

• 1:04:42Sam Morril?

Yeah, you almost have to like fake that you, you know what I mean? Especially in those Brooklyn shows.

• 1:04:46Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah, oh, yeah.

• 1:04:47Sam Morril?

You kind of have to fake it a little.

• 1:04:49Mark Normand?

But the audience, when they see that magic, that flow, the rhythm, and it's tight as a drum, it hits them harder, for sure.

• 1:04:55Sam Morril?

I remember seeing Gary Goleman, like, the, the work he put into some of these callbacks, and I'd be like,

• 1:04:59Mark Normand?

  Oh, my god.

• 1:04:59Sam Morril?

Holy shit, that's awesome, I remember loving, so.

• 1:05:01Mark Normand?

  Same.

• 1:05:02Sam Morril?

To me, it was just, you know.

• 1:05:03Mark Normand?

I think that's a defense mechanism with that Brooklyn shit, that like ironically bad, you know, dopey, I think that's all, that's cowardice.

• 1:05:12Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:13Speaker 00

Well, it's also, it's trying to claim it as our own new way of doing things. Better than your old man way.

• 1:05:20Sam Morril?

  Yeah, it's counterculture.

• 1:05:22Speaker 00

Sure, yeah, right. That was a positive in the sixties.

• 1:05:27Sam Morril?

No, but, but it's all cyclical, like, it'll go back to caring will be cool again at some point, you know, and then it's uncool.

• 1:05:33Speaker 00

  It's back.

• 1:05:34Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:34Speaker 00

It's back, I mean. The universe knows they're not coming out to see you in their 50s. When you're in your 50s and you want to keep working.

• 1:05:45Mark Normand?

  Yep.

• 1:05:46Speaker 00

Unless you're making them laugh. That's worth money.

• 1:05:51Speaker 00

You know, I was watching the Sebastian show. It's so fun to watch other. You do learn from sitting and watching somebody work.

• 1:05:58Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 1:05:58Speaker 00

You sit there and you go, oh, this is what we're doing. You can get lost up there.

• 1:06:03Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:06:04Speaker 00

World that you've invented and you and you're just playing these. You're going up and down the keyboard and you're playing these songs.

• 1:06:11Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:11Speaker 00

But you don't really, you can disconnect in a way. So I watched his show. I just finished watching it this morning. So I'm excited about it. Cause I really enjoyed it and I, and I, I, I felt what they were getting. I could see, and I don't really love these arena vibe anyway, but he, he plays it well. And I could see how, oh, they're, they're going home feeling good.

• 1:06:37Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:37Speaker 00

They feel good. That was worth it, they're thinking. The parking, the schlepping, the horrible, you know, cavernous basketball thing. That's not a show, you know, it's a, and but they've, he made them feel good because he delivers the laughs.

• 1:06:53Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:06:53Speaker 00

  Makes you laugh.

• 1:06:55Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:55Speaker 00

He, you know, when he does that, I call it the silverback gorilla sound. He does that teeth. He says teeth louder than any human has ever said.

• 1:07:06Mark Normand?

Well, he reminds me to just, you gotta, we're so writer-y, I feel like, especially us. You've gotten more animated, I feel like over the years, but he's so fun and funny. Like he moves funny. He talks funny and I, I forget to just be funny sometimes.

• 1:07:20Sam Morril?

I heard him once say orangina and he said orangina funny.

• 1:07:23Mark Normand?

  That's funny.

• 1:07:24Sam Morril?

He had a bit about like, you know, I have orangina in my fridge. No one has orangina. And the way he said that, I was like, I've never heard someone brag about having orangina, but that's hilarious.

• 1:07:33Mark Normand?

You can be in Africa in a village and think that's funny. You know, you don't have to even understand what he's talking about. It's already funny.

• 1:07:39Speaker 00

I have that bit that you've mentioned to me about the women are wives of sharks, husbands are dolphins.

• 1:07:45Mark Normand?

  Yes, yes.

• 1:07:45Speaker 00

  And.

• 1:07:48Speaker 00

So the thing about, no shark has ever performed at SeaWorld. They've never done one thing. They've tried and tried to get one, just jump or do something, you know. So, but I changed the pronunciation of SeaWorld to SeaWorld.

• 1:08:05Mark Normand?

  Oh, wow.

• 1:08:08Speaker 00

And there's a friend of mine came to the show with his girlfriend and the girlfriend said, "Why, why do you say SeaWorld?" I go, "Because you notice it." Otherwise, it's a really boring word that you've heard a trillion times.

• 1:08:25Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:25Speaker 00

And it's, and that's the funny little game that you, that you have to play of just being funny.

• 1:08:31Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:32Speaker 00

Just being silly. But I want to say Sebastian's a great writer.

• 1:08:36Mark Normand?

  Oh, no, I agree.

• 1:08:36Speaker 00

  He's a great writer.

• 1:08:37Mark Normand?

I mean, the company bit is next level.

• 1:08:39Speaker 00

Yeah, everything he does is well-written.

• 1:08:41Mark Normand?

It's also fun to think about him, he had to not be good at one point. He had to learn that whole Sebastian thing.

• 1:08:47Speaker 00

  Who didn't do that?

• 1:08:48Mark Normand?

I'm not knocking him, I'm saying, I wish I could see those, those years of figuring it out.

• 1:08:54Speaker 00

Why? What do I, I don't want to see what he.

• 1:08:56Mark Normand?

Because you want to see the progression. I love the, uh, how did he get here?

• 1:09:00Speaker 00

  Yeah, well, you're a nerd.

• 1:09:02Mark Normand?

  I'm a nerd, I'm a nerd.

• 1:09:03Speaker 00

  And I am too.

• 1:09:04Sam Morril?

But that's your favorite part of the biopic too.

• 1:09:05Mark Normand?

  Of course.

• 1:09:06Sam Morril?

You're obsessed with that. I like to see when they figure it out too. I like, I like.

• 1:09:09Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:10Speaker 00

I, back when the internet started, I got a dumb idea. I said, "I'm gonna take everything I've ever done on TV, cut it into one and two-minute portion sizes, and I'm gonna put three up a day as a, on my website as a thing." I don't know what I was doing, just trying to use the internet.

• 1:09:30Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:31Speaker 00

So I had to watch everything I've ever, every stand-up I've ever done on TV.

• 1:09:37Mark Normand?

  Talking Merv Griffin, everything.

• 1:09:39Speaker 00

  Every one of them.

• 1:09:39Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 1:09:40Speaker 00

And. It was, it's like the first time you start working with a tape recorder, it's a little painful at first.

• 1:09:46Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:09:47Speaker 00

But I got to watch, I go, oh, he's learning.

• 1:09:50Mark Normand?

  Yes, yes.

• 1:09:51Speaker 00

  He's learning.

• 1:09:51Mark Normand?

  That's fascinating.

• 1:09:52Speaker 00

Look at how he's talking, look at how he's standing, he's not so uncomfortable. And you want, I did it chronologically and it was cool to watch, it was cool to watch.

• 1:10:01Mark Normand?

  That's what I'm saying.

• 1:10:02Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 1:10:03Sam Morril?

As long as you're not too hard on yourself, it's so easy to look back and, and be like, oh, what were you, you know?

• 1:10:07Speaker 00

No, you can never, ever be like that.

• 1:10:09Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:10Speaker 00

  Never be like that.

• 1:10:11Sam Morril?

I mean, I still, I still do it.

• 1:10:12Speaker 00

  That got you here.

• 1:10:13Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:10:14Speaker 00

That got you here. You have to look at that stuff, that was bad and go, but that was the rope bridge that I had to cross.

• 1:10:20Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:21Speaker 00

I had to cross that rope bridge to get where I am now.

• 1:10:23Sam Morril?

Well, it's interesting because we might be the last group of comics that have late night sets.

• 1:10:28Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 1:10:28Speaker 00

  What do you mean?

• 1:10:29Sam Morril?

Well, I think, I don't think late night's gonna be around forever.

• 1:10:31Speaker 00

  Why?

• 1:10:31Sam Morril?

In, in its, in its current iteration, I don't think so. I mean, I don't think, how much longer do you think late night TV is gonna, I think it's gonna be different, it's gonna be like.

• 1:10:38Speaker 00

Oh, you're talking about talk show sets?

• 1:10:40Sam Morril?

  Yeah, talk show.

• 1:10:40Speaker 00

Oh, oh, I thought you mean the clubs late at night.

• 1:10:42Sam Morril?

  No, no, no.

• 1:10:42Mark Normand?

  No, no, the Tonight Show.

• 1:10:44Sam Morril?

You mean like Conan or, or Tonight Show?

• 1:10:46Speaker 00

  Is that even exist now?

• 1:10:47Mark Normand?

Tonight Show is barely there, yeah.

• 1:10:49Sam Morril?

Some, some people go on, but I mean, we, I remember listening to you on like Fresh Air with Terry Gross, talking about how you'd go running before a Tonight Show set.

• 1:10:57Speaker 00

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:10:57Sam Morril?

And Mark and I would be like, we gotta fucking run.

• 1:10:59Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:11:00Sam Morril?

Seinfeld ran before these sets, I guess, we gotta get healthy.

• 1:11:03Mark Normand?

Yeah, well, before pods, there was no, no stand-up info, no news, no tips, no, uh, information.

• 1:11:09Speaker 00

There was a book, this really launched me when I was about 19, there's a book called The Last Laugh, it's the first book ever written about stand-up.

• 1:11:17Mark Normand?

  Oh, really?

• 1:11:18Speaker 00

By Phil Berger, there it is on the left.

• 1:11:20Mark Normand?

I feel like I've written most.

• 1:11:21Speaker 00

And I still have this book, I bought it in a bookstore, I went, oh my God, there's a book about stand-up comedy. And it was about every comic from like 72, I think it went back to like the 50s or 40s.

• 1:11:35Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:11:35Speaker 00

And it's a pretty terrorizing book, it, it's a lot of, uh, very disturbing.

• 1:11:41Sam Morril?

  What are the names there?

• 1:11:42Mark Normand?

Uh, Shelley Berman, Milton Berle, Henny Youngman.

• 1:11:44Sam Morril?

  Robert Klein, alright.

• 1:11:45Speaker 00

Klein was the, the biggest comedian at the time.

• 1:11:48Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:11:49Sam Morril?

Well, there was one we read with you, I, I think you read this one too, the Franklin Ajay one, Comic Insight.

• 1:11:54Mark Normand?

Yeah, that was a good one.

• 1:11:54Sam Morril?

I think it was you and Shanley and Belzer, I, I forgot who else was in there.

• 1:11:58Mark Normand?

There's another one called Comedy at the Edge.

• 1:11:59Sam Morril?

  Those were good interviews, though.

• 1:12:01Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:12:02Sam Morril?

  But this is before podcasts.

• 1:12:03Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:04Sam Morril?

I mean, I remember going into Barnes and Noble and just reading jokes in the books.

• 1:12:08Mark Normand?

  Same, same.

• 1:12:09Sam Morril?

You know, Judy Brown wrote those books and I was just like, I'll just read comedy quotes.

• 1:12:12Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:13Sam Morril?

  And it was fun.

• 1:12:14Mark Normand?

I had one on the toilet.

• 1:12:15Speaker 00

I remember reading, ladies and gentlemen, Lenny Bruce. You ever heard of this book?

• 1:12:18Sam Morril?

  Which one?

• 1:12:18Speaker 00

  It's like 400 pages.

• 1:12:20Mark Normand?

  No.

• 1:12:20Speaker 00

It's the whole story of Lenny Bruce. It's a great book. You, you would love this book.

• 1:12:24Mark Normand?

  Okay.

• 1:12:24Speaker 00

It's about all this drug use and the craziness with the wife and all the madness. But there's one line in the book, I was reading it and I really had no idea how comics did anything.

• 1:12:36Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:37Speaker 00

And he would call his mother after every set.

• 1:12:39Mark Normand?

  What?

• 1:12:40Speaker 00

And there's one page of the book where he goes, "Hey, Mom, I did a new bit tonight." And I went, "New bit? You mean, you know what you're gonna do, the other stuff?" And yeah, it was that, that was literally the moment that I, I knew I was gonna be a comic.

• 1:12:55Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 1:12:56Speaker 00

"I did a new bit tonight."

• 1:12:57Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 1:12:58Speaker 00

I didn't know they were bits.

• 1:12:59Mark Normand?

  Exactly.

• 1:13:00Speaker 00

  You know?

• 1:13:00Mark Normand?

You had nothing to go off of.

• 1:13:02Speaker 00

What, what was it like when you first were trying to understand what it was? How ignorant were you?

• 1:13:09Mark Normand?

I was so ignorant. I soaked up everything. My mom bought me books and I watched.

• 1:13:12Speaker 00

  How old were you?

• 1:13:13Mark Normand?

  I was 20, 21.

• 1:13:15Speaker 00

  Right.

• 1:13:16Mark Normand?

And I was in college and I would listen to Carlin and you and Shanling and everybody. And Richard Jenny, I loved, and Greg Giraldo, all these guys.

• 1:13:24Sam Morril?

  Jenny's albums are so good.

• 1:13:25Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 1:13:25Sam Morril?

They're so fun. I listened to one recently and they're just killer.

• 1:13:28Mark Normand?

I had Cosby himself and I had, uh, Jeff Foxworthy. Were two cassettes I had. And I listened to them over and over.

• 1:13:34Speaker 00

So what did you think of it when you were listening to it? Did you think, "How do they do this?"

• 1:13:38Mark Normand?

I thought it was magical. I thought it was, uh, like being an astronaut. I'm like, "How could you even get from a normal guy to there?"

• 1:13:43Speaker 00

  Right.

• 1:13:43Mark Normand?

And, uh, I went to an open mic and was too scared, didn't go on.

• 1:13:47Speaker 00

  Right.

• 1:13:48Mark Normand?

Went again and I fell in love with all the comedians, even though they were horrible. But I was like, "That's amazing. This is the coolest guy."

• 1:13:53Sam Morril?

  But they were different.

• 1:13:54Mark Normand?

  They were all different.

• 1:13:55Sam Morril?

And they were your first taste. I, I was the same way. You, you ran these comics like, "Maybe this will be the crew."

• 1:13:59Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:14:00Sam Morril?

They all drop off, but you're like...

• 1:14:02Speaker 00

  Right.

• 1:14:02Mark Normand?

Yeah. And then I moved to New York and just went all in. And it was painful and it was ugly, but, uh, you figure it out. You meet friends and write together and...

• 1:14:12Speaker 00

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:14:12Mark Normand?

But it's all very unknown. It's all very like, "Let's see where this goes and let's see if this bit works."

• 1:14:18Sam Morril?

But I also wonder if we were so obsessed with jokes because so much of what we consumed was audio. I mean, I was listening to albums. I wasn't watching as many specials. Yeah, I mean, first albums I listened to.

• 1:14:28Speaker 00

  You don't look that old.

• 1:14:29Sam Morril?

No, but I mean, I think I just, CDs were like my first intro to it. No, I mean, probably the 90s. I was probably like 13.

• 1:14:35Mark Normand?

  No Cosby special or?

• 1:14:36Speaker 00

What about Evening at the Improv?

• 1:14:38Sam Morril?

No, I watched some of those, but I, I remember becoming obsessed with albums. Like, it was something about albums.

• 1:14:42Mark Normand?

It is the best way to consume.

• 1:14:43Sam Morril?

I remember hearing Chris Rock, like Roll with the New, being like, whoa, this is cra- this is crazy. I'd never heard someone talk like this. It was, it blew me away. Or like, you know, Attell's Skanks for the Memories were so many jokes.

• 1:14:54Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 1:14:55Sam Morril?

Gerardo had the, uh, Good Day to Cross the River album.

• 1:14:58Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:14:59Sam Morril?

And it was just like, wow, these are like, he also did a, he really, talking about guys who like skillfully could do social commentary.

• 1:15:05Speaker 00

  I loved that guy.

• 1:15:06Sam Morril?

  He was great.

• 1:15:07Speaker 00

  He was great.

• 1:15:07Mark Normand?

He was great, yeah. But Rocks, uh, Bigger and Blacker. When I saw that, woo, or no, wait, no, the other one. Bring the pain.

• 1:15:15Sam Morril?

  Bring the pain.

• 1:15:15Speaker 00

  That was the first one.

• 1:15:16Mark Normand?

  That was that?

• 1:15:17Speaker 00

  Yeah, that was great.

• 1:15:18Mark Normand?

I didn't know you could go that far.

• 1:15:20Sam Morril?

I just rewatched them both and I was just like, it is crazy just how relentless these are. And he's got the callbacks and he's got the, it's so polished.

• 1:15:27Mark Normand?

I heard Quinn told me that he rocked when he got that, got the, the special. Like, he's, your agent says, you got it. Now, we're gonna go shoot it in three months. He paved his, uh, his tiny Harlem apartment walls with gla- with, uh, mirrors and just did it back and forth in front of the mirror so he could see what he looked like from every angle.

• 1:15:44Sam Morril?

  Wow.

• 1:15:45Mark Normand?

  Just to be ready.

• 1:15:46Speaker 00

  Communities are so crazy.

• 1:15:49Speaker 00

  That's not gonna help.

• 1:15:50Mark Normand?

You never did stuff like that?

• 1:15:52Sam Morril?

  No.

• 1:15:52Mark Normand?

  Oh, I did that stuff.

• 1:15:54Speaker 00

Get in and go go to the club and work out.

• 1:15:56Mark Normand?

When he, when I got this gig to open for you, I, it was 15 minutes, no light. I ran that 15 with a stopwatch in my apartment over and over.

• 1:16:04Speaker 00

  It was great.

• 1:16:05Mark Normand?

Well, the first one was rough. But after that, after the pep talk, I feel like I really picked it up.

• 1:16:11Speaker 00

  Where was that? The Beacon?

• 1:16:12Mark Normand?

Beacon, yeah. That was, that was big.

• 1:16:14Speaker 00

  That was fun.

• 1:16:15Sam Morril?

When you were in the clubs, uh, do you remember Bill Hicks there? Do you see him?

• 1:16:19Speaker 00

No, he was Houston. I didn't run across him at all. And by the time he was popular, I think it was the late 80s and 90s and I was in LA and then I was doing the show and.

• 1:16:30Sam Morril?

Who were the LA guys you'd see go up a lot?

• 1:16:33Speaker 00

Well. When I moved out there in 1980, I would drive up to the store, comic store every day and see who was gonna be on. And I was, oh, it was always, I called them the Eli guys. It was Letterman, Lewis, or Leno.

• 1:16:46Mark Normand?

  Mmm.

• 1:16:47Speaker 00

If any of them were on, those were the three guys I was obsessed with.

• 1:16:50Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:16:50Sam Morril?

  What was Letterman's stand-up like?

• 1:16:52Speaker 00

Pretty good, you know? He was funny. He just had a great presence, smart, you know?

• 1:16:59Mark Normand?

  Smarmy, sarcastic.

• 1:17:01Speaker 00

He didn't have that animal gene, you know, that comedians, real touring stand-ups need.

• 1:17:07Mark Normand?

  Yes. Leno has it.

• 1:17:09Speaker 00

Yeah, Leno has it. He took all of it.

• 1:17:13Mark Normand?

Well, do you, like, a lot of people have a misconception about you that you're, you know, you're the clean guy, clean comedy.

• 1:17:20Sam Morril?

He's a big porn guy. You were just talking all the porn.

• 1:17:23Mark Normand?

But when I first met you, I was like, maybe I should hide that I drink so much around Jerry. But you don't care.

• 1:17:29Speaker 00

  Why would I care?

• 1:17:30Mark Normand?

Well, I just assumed you were so buttoned up. But it's all the brand.

• 1:17:35Speaker 00

  No, it's the style.

• 1:17:36Mark Normand?

  It's a style.

• 1:17:37Speaker 00

I just like the style. Do you think that I think people would be upset to hear a curse word?

• 1:17:43Mark Normand?

  Of course not.

• 1:17:44Speaker 00

No, they don't care. I do it because I enjoy that style.

• 1:17:47Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:17:47Speaker 00

It's just like, it forces me to be elegant and interesting in a way that I like to be.

• 1:17:54Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:55Speaker 00

You know, I didn't want it when we did the contest episode. Larry, I remember Larry saying, I just talked with NBC. They have no problem with us using the word masturbation. I go, no, that's no fun. Let's not use it.

• 1:18:07Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:18:08Speaker 00

That, well, that's more interesting. You're supposed to be good with words. Do it. Let's see you do it.

• 1:18:15Mark Normand?

And that made the whole master your domain, all that.

• 1:18:17Speaker 00

Yeah, yeah. That's the only reason I don't, that cursing bothers me. It's like,

• 1:18:25Speaker 00

you're good enough to get that same laugh without it. And that's what entertains us.

• 1:18:31Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:18:32Speaker 00

  Can you do it?

• 1:18:32Mark Normand?

  The limits are fun.

• 1:18:33Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 1:18:34Mark Normand?

Yeah, that's true. Like, I did The Tonight Show and I couldn't say erection.

• 1:18:40Speaker 00

  Oh, wow.

• 1:18:41Mark Normand?

So I had to come up with something.

• 1:18:43Sam Morril?

But erection, isn't that the right term to use?

• 1:18:46Mark Normand?

  They didn't like it.

• 1:18:46Speaker 00

  Wow, what year was that?

• 1:18:49Mark Normand?

2012? Tonight Show is very clean.

• 1:18:53Sam Morril?

  They've gotten harder.

• 1:18:53Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:18:54Sam Morril?

  They've gotten...

• 1:18:55Mark Normand?

  Sort of the erection.

• 1:18:56Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:18:56Mark Normand?

  But yeah.

• 1:18:58Sam Morril?

  They've gotten...

• 1:18:59Mark Normand?

But do you feel like, like you don't want to do blow? You don't drink a lot? Do you feel like you get it out with the cars? Maybe the cars is your outlet.

• 1:19:05Speaker 00

When you say get it out, it refers to what?

• 1:19:08Mark Normand?

The evil, the evil, everybody's got a vice, the evil in us.

• 1:19:10Speaker 00

Oh, you think it's gonna be gone when you do blow? It's gonna be stronger?

• 1:19:14Mark Normand?

But it's gotta get out of you, you know what I mean? When you work out.

• 1:19:17Speaker 00

You can't get it out, it's in you.

• 1:19:19Sam Morril?

Have you ever been on a show where people grill you for not doing blow?

• 1:19:24Mark Normand?

I'm not, I'm never doing blow either.

• 1:19:27Speaker 00

  First.

• 1:19:29Mark Normand?

But do you think, I think everybody...

• 1:19:30Speaker 00

It's just so stupid, it's so stupid. This is all you have to work with.

• 1:19:36Mark Normand?

Well, I'm saying it out with it.

• 1:19:37Speaker 00

This is the instrument, this is your grand piano. Let's put some shit in here. What kind of thinking is that?

• 1:19:45Mark Normand?

Well, I don't want to do it, but the cars might be the outlet.

• 1:19:48Speaker 00

Well, everyone needs interests, Mark, in life. It's fun to be interested in things that interest you. But poison is a stupid thing to get interested in.

• 1:19:59Mark Normand?

  Right, right.

• 1:20:00Speaker 00

And if you can't figure it out, I mean, I was, whatever, 17, watching Kojak, and I could figure out drugs are bad. I could tell from watching Kojak.

• 1:20:12Mark Normand?

I'm not, I'm off the drugs. I'm talking about an outlet, I'm talking about you have to have a release, a vice.

• 1:20:18Speaker 00

You are correct, you are correct.

• 1:20:20Mark Normand?

  It's not a bad vice.

• 1:20:21Speaker 00

And I do get it from, I do some, my family can tell you, I do some weird exercise things.

• 1:20:27Mark Normand?

  I do too.

• 1:20:28Speaker 00

  You know.

• 1:20:28Sam Morril?

  What kind of exercising?

• 1:20:29Speaker 00

Well, like, we'll have people over and I'll eat like a crazy meal and I'll feel gross and I've had a couple glasses of wine and maybe a cigar. I don't, I can't go to bed, I go to the gym. I'll go to the gym at like midnight.

• 1:20:43Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 1:20:44Sam Morril?

  What do you do, weights?

• 1:20:45Speaker 00

No, I'll just do a little cardio, watch TV, and, and then I can sleep.

• 1:20:49Mark Normand?

  Interesting.

• 1:20:50Speaker 00

So I will do things like that, I mean, is that what you're talking about?

• 1:20:53Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:20:53Speaker 00

  Crazy things?

• 1:20:54Mark Normand?

That might be some OCD or some guilt.

• 1:20:57Speaker 00

Yeah, I think it's just a way to survive self abuse.

• 1:21:02Mark Normand?

Sure, sure. Well, I do a crazy workout routine every day and if I don't do it, I'm ruined mentally.

• 1:21:09Speaker 00

Great. Well, doesn't that get it out?

• 1:21:12Mark Normand?

I think so. I think so. Yes. Yeah, I think that gets it out. Yeah.

• 1:21:16Speaker 00

Because you're burning up that juice.

• 1:21:18Mark Normand?

  Exactly.

• 1:21:19Speaker 00

You're getting dopamine and adrenaline and these things are.

• 1:21:23Mark Normand?

And I think stand up is a good, good out, good outlet.

• 1:21:27Speaker 00

  It's the ultimate.

• 1:21:28Sam Morril?

Sometimes it's my first time getting out of the house is to do a set.

• 1:21:31Mark Normand?

  Same, same.

• 1:21:32Sam Morril?

Thank God. Thank God for it, you know?

• 1:21:33Speaker 00

Oh, you're ready to get married.

• 1:21:37Speaker 00

  You are ready.

• 1:21:39Mark Normand?

This is one of the great marriage savers because you're like, oh, I gotta go, I gotta do a set. And you're like, ah, I'm out of the house.

• 1:21:44Speaker 00

Can you believe what this guy's got going on? He, his wife comes home from work.

• 1:21:51Mark Normand?

She works at home. She works at home.

• 1:21:53Speaker 00

Oh, she works at home? He comes home from doing this, whatever he's doing, and then he goes out to the clubs.

• 1:22:00Mark Normand?

  During the week.

• 1:22:00Speaker 00

And then he goes out on the weekends. They have a baby.

• 1:22:03Sam Morril?

We had a canceled flight, Gary Vee and I, this weekend and Mark texts him, oh, man, so extra time away from the kids. I'm like, yeah, no, no, we're not happy about it. That says so much about you.

• 1:22:14Mark Normand?

  Well, I think it's a, it's a marriage saver, that road time.

• 1:22:16Speaker 00

It is because you're not really designed to be married.

• 1:22:20Mark Normand?

  No.

• 1:22:20Speaker 00

A comedian is not, Jim Gaffigan used to say, whenever he would hear about a comedian getting married, he would go, why?

• 1:22:29Sam Morril?

So how do you have to go out of your way to make it work?

• 1:22:32Mark Normand?

I pay for a lot of help.

• 1:22:33Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:22:34Speaker 00

What he's got going on, I've never heard of.

• 1:22:37Mark Normand?

  Really?

• 1:22:38Speaker 00

Yeah, going out during the week and doing the road on the weekends. You don't do that every weekend, every.

• 1:22:43Sam Morril?

  Yeah, he goes pretty hard.

• 1:22:44Speaker 00

  Yeah, it's so impressive, but.

• 1:22:47Mark Normand?

  I enjoy it.

• 1:22:48Speaker 00

Yeah, I know you enjoy it.

• 1:22:50Sam Morril?

We're shocked she accepts it. It's cool.

• 1:22:52Mark Normand?

Well, I'm there all day and then, except for today, and then I do sets at night and then I pay the rent and stuff.

• 1:22:58Speaker 00

You, you got a great wife.

• 1:23:00Mark Normand?

  I got a great wife.

• 1:23:02Speaker 00

But for a comedian who is not, I do a line about, you know, I never thought I could get married. The stage that you're looking at, you're looking at the number of people I feel comfortable working with.

• 1:23:14Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:23:15Speaker 00

And so marriages, I think it's not really what we're cut out for because you've created this solitary world.

• 1:23:23Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 1:23:23Speaker 00

  And survived. Talk about indulgent.

• 1:23:27Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:23:27Speaker 00

You're making a living with your whims and your notions and nothing.

• 1:23:32Mark Normand?

  Notions. Yeah, that's true.

• 1:23:34Speaker 00

  So that's not normal.

• 1:23:36Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:36Speaker 00

That's not normal. That's the other thing that's really funny at the end of this Sebastian show, a lot of comics do is he comes off and the wife and kids are there.

• 1:23:42Mark Normand?

  Yes, yes.

• 1:23:43Speaker 00

As if he's just a regular guy. Just a regular family guy.

• 1:23:48Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:48Speaker 00

Dazzling nineteen thousand people for an hour and a half.

• 1:23:52Mark Normand?

Yeah. But when your wife sees the home and the PJ and the thirty-eight cars, they go, I go out a lot, but look at this.

• 1:24:01Speaker 00

I hope that stays. I hope that works.

• 1:24:04Mark Normand?

I'm just saying, it's not a bad life.

• 1:24:06Speaker 00

Yeah, no, it's not bad, but you can't buy your presence. You have to be there. You have to.

• 1:24:11Mark Normand?

  I see. I see.

• 1:24:12Speaker 00

  Yeah. Your presence is important.

• 1:24:14Mark Normand?

I hope she never sees this.

• 1:24:20Mark Normand?

  She's a great egg.

• 1:24:21Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 1:24:22Mark Normand?

  She gets it.

• 1:24:23Speaker 00

  All right.

• 1:24:23Mark Normand?

Does your wife give you shit for doing the road?

• 1:24:25Speaker 00

No, she loves it now, but when the kids were little, it was tougher on her.

• 1:24:28Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:29Speaker 00

  It was really tough.

• 1:24:30Sam Morril?

You need, in this life, it seems like you need a woman who can deal with a lot.

• 1:24:35Speaker 00

You really gotta lay it out. Before you get married, it's a stupid thing, but nobody talked about, where do you want to live?

• 1:24:43Mark Normand?

  Hmm.

• 1:24:43Speaker 00

Talk about that. Do you want to have kids? How many? What religion?

• 1:24:48Mark Normand?

  Hmm, yeah.

• 1:24:49Sam Morril?

I put it out there sooner and sooner in these.

• 1:24:51Speaker 00

  Really?

• 1:24:51Mark Normand?

  That's what I did too.

• 1:24:52Sam Morril?

I'm like, just so you know, I'm dying on this island or hotel room.

• 1:24:55Speaker 00

  Really?

• 1:24:56Sam Morril?

  It's out there.

• 1:24:56Speaker 00

That's really good. I never thought of that. And I never had that problem, but I could never leave this island either.

• 1:25:02Mark Normand?

  Epstein said the same thing.

• 1:25:07Speaker 00

Oh, Kill Tony lost another one. Another good Kill Tony line. Where are the shades? Can I get more shades in here, please?

• 1:25:17Mark Normand?

Well, yeah, but, you know, I never thought I'd move to Brooklyn, but you make compromises.

• 1:25:21Speaker 00

  That's an island too.

• 1:25:22Mark Normand?

  That's true. That's true.

• 1:25:24Sam Morril?

I can't believe you left Manhattan too.

• 1:25:26Mark Normand?

  I know. Wasn't he? But I got a nice spot. I got a brownstone.

• 1:25:29Sam Morril?

  Great spot.

• 1:25:30Mark Normand?

Can't complain. Again, again, a compromise. I'm compromising. But maybe I'll take some weekdays off.

• 1:25:37Sam Morril?

  Yeah, I can't believe you don't.

• 1:25:38Mark Normand?

I'm starting to get feeling guilty, but that's how I work the new out. I gotta work the new stuff.

• 1:25:42Speaker 00

Yeah, yeah. We're all doing the same thing.

• 1:25:52Sam Morril?

Is your, what is, is every day like, how much time do you think you spend? If you write, is it a, at a desk, is, are you taking?

• 1:25:59Speaker 00

I can write absolutely anywhere. I could sit down on this floor, give me a pad and a pen and say, I think there's something funny about these Toto toilets.

• 1:26:09Speaker 00

And I could, I'll just start noodling. I get a, I'll get a coffee. I like, I think coffee is part of my system now.

• 1:26:15Mark Normand?

  Sure.

• 1:26:16Speaker 00

Add, add coffee to a pen. I think writing with a pen, actually, and I, I've seen some studies. It does something to your brain.

• 1:26:24Mark Normand?

  Hmm.

• 1:26:25Speaker 00

  That, that this doesn't do.

• 1:26:26Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:26:27Sam Morril?

  Definitely memorizing.

• 1:26:27Speaker 00

And of course, exercise does something to your brain.

• 1:26:30Mark Normand?

Yeah, I'm all pen, I'm with you.

• 1:26:32Speaker 00

  Really?

• 1:26:32Sam Morril?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:26:33Speaker 00

  Oh, look at that.

• 1:26:34Sam Morril?

  I got the same.

• 1:26:36Speaker 00

  Wow.

• 1:26:37Mark Normand?

I type nothing down, uh, which.

• 1:26:40Speaker 00

There were very, very few comics in my early days that had these things.

• 1:26:44Mark Normand?

  Really?

• 1:26:44Speaker 00

  Very, very few.

• 1:26:45Sam Morril?

I don't know how you would.

• 1:26:45Speaker 00

I was like the only one.

• 1:26:46Sam Morril?

I wrote down everything. I don't, now I'm much, I'm selective, but back in the day, I wrote every dumb thought.

• 1:26:52Mark Normand?

  Same.

• 1:26:52Sam Morril?

Cause you were like, it could be something.

• 1:26:54Mark Normand?

  Could be something.

• 1:26:55Speaker 00

The blessing of my career is about six months in, I was watching some guy go on TV and get worse and worse. And eventually he was finished. And I went, oh, this is really hard.

• 1:27:07Sam Morril?

Cause you didn't have the material.

• 1:27:08Speaker 00

He didn't have material. And I realized, oh, this is really hard. And the, and this whole game is material.

• 1:27:14Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 1:27:15Sam Morril?

That is crazy to get those opportunities and not have.

• 1:27:17Speaker 00

So, so from six months in, I said, okay, I need a, I need some sort of ritual here.

• 1:27:24Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:27:24Speaker 00

  To, to produce this stuff.

• 1:27:25Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:27:26Speaker 00

You do get stuff comes to you, but you need more.

• 1:27:29Mark Normand?

  You need more.

• 1:27:30Sam Morril?

Who were your friends early on who were really pushing you?

• 1:27:34Speaker 00

  Nobody pushed anybody.

• 1:27:36Sam Morril?

But I'm, I mean, if you just saw someone, I mean.

• 1:27:38Speaker 00

Oh, Leno, it was always Leno.

• 1:27:40Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 1:27:40Speaker 00

Leno, Leno had the best stuff. He got, he would just destroy and you would just think, oh, I just wanna get, is that good? And he would get a gig in Atlantic City and you go, wow, Atlantic City.

• 1:27:51Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:27:52Speaker 00

Imagine getting a gig in Atlantic City.

• 1:27:54Mark Normand?

And he's so damn confident. It's cra- like he would go on Letterman with a hoagie, you know, and just eat it there. And I was like, who is this guy?

• 1:28:00Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 1:28:00Mark Normand?

  It's crazy.

• 1:28:01Speaker 00

Yeah. It's so, you know, again, it's the guy, there was just a few guys that loved it.

• 1:28:08Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 1:28:08Speaker 00

You know? I mean, nobody's. After the TV series, you're gonna go back to the clubs?

• 1:28:15Mark Normand?

  Exactly.

• 1:28:15Speaker 00

You know, I mean, I had on-air commitments from NBC for any other show I wanted to make, movies. I could have done anything. But I missed that, that brutality. I missed the brutality.

• 1:28:27Mark Normand?

And didn't you warm up the crowd at your own show?

• 1:28:29Speaker 00

Uh, no, I would do a warm-up, but we had a warm-up guy.

• 1:28:33Mark Normand?

  Oh, okay.

• 1:28:33Speaker 00

I would do a warm-up, yeah, I would do my, uh, Tide, uh, I see Tide is getting out bloodstains now. Remember that?

• 1:28:41Mark Normand?

Yeah, get the harpoon out of the chest. Harpoon is funny.

• 1:28:45Speaker 00

If you've got a t-shirt with bloodstains all over it, maybe laundry isn't your biggest problem right now.

• 1:28:51Mark Normand?

That and Bozo the Clown. Those are my two big ones.

• 1:28:54Speaker 00

  Bozo the Clown.

• 1:28:55Mark Normand?

Bozo, does he need the clown?

• 1:28:57Speaker 00

  That's not me.

• 1:28:58Mark Normand?

  I think that's you. That's you.

• 1:28:59Speaker 00

  I'm pretty sure it's you.

• 1:29:00Mark Normand?

Does he need the clown? Is that Bozo the District Attorney?

• 1:29:03Speaker 00

Yeah, that was definitely you. Really?

• 1:29:05Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:29:05Speaker 00

  Doesn't ring a bell.

• 1:29:06Sam Morril?

  I remember that.

• 1:29:07Speaker 00

  Wow.

• 1:29:08Sam Morril?

Does he need the clown? That's a pretty, that's a good bit.

• 1:29:10Mark Normand?

That's a great bit, great bit.

• 1:29:13Sam Morril?

He's been doing it so long, he's forgetting.

• 1:29:14Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 1:29:15Speaker 00

Eight minutes of his. He clown him.

• 1:29:17Mark Normand?

  Bozo the District Attorney?

• 1:29:18Speaker 00

  I never said that.

• 1:29:19Mark Normand?

Uh, pull it up. We can find that.

• 1:29:21Speaker 00

  That's a funny line.

• 1:29:22Mark Normand?

It was on the, you use it on the opening of the TV show at one point. Cause he did a clown episode with George, remember that? With actually with, um...

• 1:29:30Speaker 00

  Oh, who cares? Who cares?

• 1:29:31Sam Morril?

  So, uh, yeah.

• 1:29:33Speaker 00

  Not that interesting.

• 1:29:34Mark Normand?

  All right.

• 1:29:35Sam Morril?

So when you were done with Seinfeld and you go back to the clubs and you, I mean, you missed the brutality of that. Was there any point where you were like, what the fuck am I doing? Or you're just like, this is the best?

• 1:29:44Speaker 00

  This is the best.

• 1:29:45Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:29:45Speaker 00

I mean, I, I had, I had had that experience that everyone wants. Which is, I'm doing exactly what I wanna do and people like it. Sometimes you can have a hit thing, you know, there's a lot of actors are in things, a Marvel movie.

• 1:30:05Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:30:05Speaker 00

But that's not what I wanna do. And then they do what they wanna do, but it doesn't find any, an audience.

• 1:30:10Mark Normand?

  Yes, yes.

• 1:30:11Speaker 00

  So I had the thing.

• 1:30:12Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:30:13Speaker 00

So I wasn't, I was satiated, you know?

• 1:30:15Sam Morril?

It probably kept you from being a dick too. I mean, the fact that you're being humbled again after all this success.

• 1:30:21Mark Normand?

  Oh, like the crowds.

• 1:30:23Speaker 00

Yeah. I thought I would have crazy confidence after that. That I'd be a different performer entirely. And I found out very quickly.

• 1:30:34Mark Normand?

  Same you.

• 1:30:35Speaker 00

  Same.

• 1:30:36Mark Normand?

Yeah. It's like when you go to Hawaii and you're like, I'm gonna feel good. You still hate yourself in Hawaii, you know?

• 1:30:41Speaker 00

I used to say to my friends, I gotta, I'm gonna move to another town. I go, are you bringing that head with you?

• 1:30:49Speaker 00

Cause if you bring that, you're gonna feel exactly the same.

• 1:30:51Sam Morril?

Oh, my friend moved to Denver. He's like, I'm, I move back within six months.

• 1:30:54Mark Normand?

Yeah, Denver, come on. They think they'll change.

• 1:30:57Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 1:30:58Mark Normand?

And didn't you shoot your HBO special when you, I think you told me you were a little, you weren't ready? Or you weren't feeling ready to shoot, I'm telling you for the last time. It was right after the show ended.

• 1:31:08Speaker 00

No, no, I was ready. I had done a lot of tour, a long tour, Australia and Europe and I was good.

• 1:31:16Mark Normand?

Okay, I thought you were saying it was one of the harder things you've done was shooting that.

• 1:31:20Speaker 00

Hmm. I had a brutal heckle. I did.

• 1:31:24Sam Morril?

At the album, right? With the taping?

• 1:31:27Speaker 00

At the taping. It was at the Broadhurst on Broadway. And, uh,

• 1:31:34Speaker 00

so it was two shows. First show, I go out really feeling good.

• 1:31:37Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:31:38Speaker 00

And I'm just going, oh, I'm gonna just lay this down just the way I want it. And some guy, it was a, it was a Howard Stern fan.

• 1:31:46Mark Normand?

  Hmm.

• 1:31:47Speaker 00

Did this blood curdling scream that just stopped the whole room. Just went, Jerry.

• 1:31:54Mark Normand?

  Oh, that's still in there?

• 1:31:56Speaker 00

No, no, we cut it out.

• 1:31:57Mark Normand?

  I swear I've heard that.

• 1:31:58Sam Morril?

I thought there was a heckle in there, yeah.

• 1:32:00Speaker 00

  No, we cut it out.

• 1:32:01Sam Morril?

  Wow.

• 1:32:01Speaker 00

  It aired live.

• 1:32:03Mark Normand?

  Okay.

• 1:32:03Speaker 00

And then if you saw it.

• 1:32:04Mark Normand?

  I saw it live.

• 1:32:05Speaker 00

Okay, then you did hear it.

• 1:32:06Mark Normand?

  Okay.

• 1:32:07Speaker 00

And I just, and I had nothing. Just cause all he said was my name.

• 1:32:11Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:32:11Speaker 00

And I had nothing. I couldn't think of anything. And it just kinda rocked me back.

• 1:32:16Sam Morril?

Now hecklers listening are gonna know how to get us.

• 1:32:18Mark Normand?

  Right, right.

• 1:32:19Sam Morril?

  Just say their name.

• 1:32:20Speaker 00

Say their name. But the guy, it was, uh, he's probably listening right now.

• 1:32:24Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:32:24Speaker 00

But, uh, it still went good.

• 1:32:27Mark Normand?

Yeah. And one lady yelled something out, I love you. And you're like, I love you too, but I feel the need to see other people.

• 1:32:36Mark Normand?

And you had the opening bit, I'm not trying to blow you too much, but you had the opening bit about the the standing ovation, and I remember thinking.

• 1:32:45Speaker 00

  What was that?

• 1:32:46Mark Normand?

You know, you got a standing O, and you went, "I love the standing O, because not everybody wants to do it." There's always that one guy who's like, "We doing this now?"

• 1:32:53Speaker 00

Oh yeah, I still do that.

• 1:32:54Mark Normand?

  Oh, that's gold.

• 1:32:55Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 1:32:55Mark Normand?

But I, opening a stand-up show is so awkward. That's a perfect way to slide in to a set. I always wish I had an opening like that, that's so natural.

• 1:33:04Sam Morril?

Well, you were the other one too, about doing something.

• 1:33:08Mark Normand?

  Oh!

• 1:33:08Sam Morril?

  That's another great open.

• 1:33:10Speaker 00

Right, that you're out, but you gotta go back, that one, yeah. I'll never beat that opening.

• 1:33:17Sam Morril?

Opening a show is the toughest thing.

• 1:33:19Speaker 00

It's the toughest thing. Tough, not as tough as closing. I don't have a great closer now, and I just hate it.

• 1:33:25Mark Normand?

  I heard that, actually.

• 1:33:27Speaker 00

I have an end, but I used to have that bit about the bathroom stalls.

• 1:33:32Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:33:32Speaker 00

  The separation between the panels.

• 1:33:34Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 1:33:34Speaker 00

  That was great.

• 1:33:37Speaker 00

  I really miss that guy.

• 1:33:38Mark Normand?

See, you love your old act, you hate your old act.

• 1:33:41Sam Morril?

Well, there's certain bits I look back, I'm like, "Wow, I wish I could write a bit like that right now."

• 1:33:45Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:33:46Sam Morril?

But there's, yeah, but there's others that I'm just like, eh. There's specials of mine I like.

• 1:33:50Speaker 00

I never hated anything I had that worked.

• 1:33:54Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 1:33:55Sam Morril?

Yeah, I wouldn't say I hate it, I think it's usually like my delivery, or just the way I'm, it's little things. It's not like the bit that I'm just like, "Oh, I hate that bit." It's more just like, there's little things that bother me more. But I don't, I don't get like too caught up in it.

• 1:34:09Mark Normand?

  Sure.

• 1:34:10Sam Morril?

But, yeah, even listening to an old set, when you're listening to an old version of a bit, I'm like, "Why was I telling it that way?"

• 1:34:15Mark Normand?

  Sure, yeah.

• 1:34:16Sam Morril?

I'm not mad, I'm just like, "What the hell was I doing?"

• 1:34:17Mark Normand?

  I know, I know.

• 1:34:18Sam Morril?

Because it seems so simple once you crack a bit, but you forget that this is every time, it's work.

• 1:34:23Mark Normand?

Have you guys ever listened to an old bit and thought? Wow, how did I write like that? Now I'm gonna listen to this bit to learn how to write a bit that way. I'm learning how to write a bit for my own bit.

• 1:34:35Speaker 00

  Yeah, that crazy I'm not.

• 1:34:36Mark Normand?

  Oh, okay.

• 1:34:38Sam Morril?

Some moms will listen to comedy though and just hear like someone and be like, oh, I like, I'm not like this comic, but it'll remind me, oh, this is just silly, or this is funny. It just reminds you, like, sometimes you hear Regan and you're just like, it's so silly.

• 1:34:49Mark Normand?

  I know, I know.

• 1:34:51Sam Morril?

Just reminds you, I don't know, sometimes you hear preachy comedy. You hear so many different types of acts, The Cellar or wherever, and it's great. Cause you're exposed to so much. But every once in a while, you're like, what do I like? Why did I get into this? And that silliness is like, oh, that's what made me happy.

• 1:35:04Speaker 00

That's what they wanna see more than anything.

• 1:35:07Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 1:35:07Speaker 00

They wanna see you do what you like.

• 1:35:10Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:35:11Speaker 00

And the fact that you like it is what makes it fun for them.

• 1:35:15Sam Morril?

  Right.

• 1:35:15Speaker 00

They do not care what you're talking about. They care only how you feel about what you're talking about. Especially when you bring up something stupid.

• 1:35:24Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:35:25Speaker 00

Why is he talking about this? Cause, cause I really like this subject. And that, to me, is what a comedian should be. Not addressing what's been on your mind lately.

• 1:35:36Mark Normand?

  Ah.

• 1:35:37Speaker 00

That is not what, that's, that's The Daily Show.

• 1:35:40Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:35:40Speaker 00

And that's nothing wrong with that, but that's, that's not what stand-up is. Stand-up is, we wanna see a guy a little out of his mind.

• 1:35:48Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 1:35:48Speaker 00

Crazy into himself and obsessed with what he's obsessed with.

• 1:35:55Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:35:55Speaker 00

It's the obsession that they come to hear.

• 1:35:57Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 1:35:58Speaker 00

And that's when you're the funniest.

• 1:36:00Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 1:36:00Speaker 00

When you're talking about something that you know this hasn't occurred to anyone else.

• 1:36:04Mark Normand?

Yeah, Steven Wright is the king of that.

• 1:36:06Speaker 00

Yeah, any good comedian is doing that.

• 1:36:09Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:36:09Speaker 00

  I think.

• 1:36:10Mark Normand?

Huh. Even Rodney talking about his wife hating him?

• 1:36:14Speaker 00

Well, I mean, that, that was a pretty strict formula that he had.

• 1:36:19Mark Normand?

  That's true, that's true.

• 1:36:21Speaker 00

And, and because he had had such struggles early on, he stuck to the formula.

• 1:36:26Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:36:26Speaker 00

But in person, he had a lot of other stuff going on.

• 1:36:31Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:36:31Speaker 00

That was interesting. And I would say to him, you should do that. And he'd go, no, no, no.

• 1:36:35Sam Morril?

  Like what?

• 1:36:36Speaker 00

Just, you know, he, he's philosophical guy.

• 1:36:38Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:36:39Speaker 00

You know, about, you know, comedians are, what is life? This is all phony, this is all nonsense, everything everybody does is meaningless, you know?

• 1:36:47Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:36:47Speaker 00

  He had that.

• 1:36:48Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:36:49Speaker 00

Every comedian has that kinda nihilistic. Lens on things, you know.

• 1:36:53Mark Normand?

Totally. But don't you feel like you open up and get vulnerable and talk about that thing you wanna talk about, that thing you're obsessed with and they don't go with it? That hurts, that sucks.

• 1:37:02Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 1:37:03Mark Normand?

But I, sometimes I feel like I can't get them there.

• 1:37:06Speaker 00

That, yeah, sometimes you can, but you try.

• 1:37:09Mark Normand?

  Alright.

• 1:37:09Speaker 00

And, and, and I do believe, that's why I like, go back to our favorite subject, if you wanna try for six months, I have a, this bit about ambulances, I told you about this, the sirens.

• 1:37:23Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:37:24Speaker 00

It's one guy, you know, we feel bad, we don't know anything about him, we don't know how he lives. Let's get this, whatever it is.

• 1:37:31Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:37:32Speaker 00

It's just, it's just, I've been on this a year, it's still not working.

• 1:37:37Mark Normand?

I got a few of those too.

• 1:37:37Speaker 00

It's a couple little laughs in it that keep it alive, and that's, I like it, cuz it's not working.

• 1:37:45Sam Morril?

You're getting a toxic relationship with a joke premise sometimes.

• 1:37:47Speaker 00

  Right.

• 1:37:48Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:37:48Speaker 00

  Right.

• 1:37:49Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 1:37:50Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 1:37:50Sam Morril?

  No, it's.

• 1:37:51Speaker 00

  Codependent.

• 1:37:52Mark Normand?

But unlike the relationship, you could fix this bit, it's possible that it could work one day. The relationship will never work, but one day you can get that.

• 1:37:58Speaker 00

But it'll never be as good as that bit that comes nice and easy.

• 1:38:01Mark Normand?

  Ah, no.

• 1:38:02Speaker 00

  It'll never be that funny.

• 1:38:04Sam Morril?

When you just get, I had a bit really early on, and so rare you get a gif like this, but it was about a guy on the subway who was masturbating, and it was awful, and it was just like this awful moment with a girl he was dating, and she kept saying, "You're just gonna do, you're just gonna let him do that? You're just gonna let him do that?" And I, and the twist that just hit me on the subway was I just turned, he said, "I wasn't doing it to her, I was doing it to you," and the twist was, I sit down, I go, "You're just gonna let him do that?"

• 1:38:27Mark Normand?

There you go, that's a joke.

• 1:38:28Sam Morril?

But I was like, how did that not hit me? But it hit me on the, like, on the train, I was like, what, not in the moment, obviously.

• 1:38:34Mark Normand?

  Yeah, right.

• 1:38:34Sam Morril?

But I was like, oh yeah, the expectation's on her now.

• 1:38:36Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:38:37Speaker 00

  That's fantastic.

• 1:38:38Sam Morril?

So, but it just, it was like a gift, and I was like, oh, I think that's it, and I tried it that night, and I got an applause break, and I was like, that never happens to me.

• 1:38:44Mark Normand?

  That's the best thing.

• 1:38:45Sam Morril?

It's always, it's always like, labor, labor, it's never just like, you know, that's why more and more, I try to just not have the AirPods in, cuz I'm just like, just let it wander.

• 1:38:53Mark Normand?

  Right, right, for sure.

• 1:38:55Sam Morril?

But it's like, you know, you know what you're, it's like life, you know what's healthy, you know what you're supposed to do, you know you're supposed to exercise, sometimes you're bad, sometimes you're good, but

• 1:39:02Speaker 00

  Right.

• 1:39:02Sam Morril?

you know that you're gonna get a gift if you, if you let your mind wander.

• 1:39:06Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:06Sam Morril?

You know you're supposed to listen to sets, you just, sometimes you don't want to, but you gotta.

• 1:39:10Mark Normand?

  Gotta do the work.

• 1:39:11Sam Morril?

  You gotta.

• 1:39:12Mark Normand?

But don't you feel like when you do crack that ambulance bit? It's great? Cause you get the ones that pop in, but there's gotta be jokes that you worked on for a year and you did crack it.

• 1:39:22Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 1:39:23Mark Normand?

  Okay.

• 1:39:23Speaker 00

Yeah. Yeah, that pop tart thing.

• 1:39:26Mark Normand?

  Oh, there you go.

• 1:39:27Speaker 00

  That took a long time.

• 1:39:29Mark Normand?

  And you nailed it.

• 1:39:30Speaker 00

It doesn't matter. My whole philosophy is, don't be a good accountant of your time and energy. Just don't even know what a waste of time that was for somebody that failed or succeeded.

• 1:39:45Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:46Speaker 00

The hell with it. The only thing that matters is that struggle that you have adapted yourself to the struggle. And you're comfortable with it.

• 1:39:56Sam Morril?

It's very zen. You're certainly not a lot of regrets.

• 1:39:58Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 1:39:59Sam Morril?

It's a good way to go with life.

• 1:40:00Speaker 00

  It doesn't matter.

• 1:40:01Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:40:02Speaker 00

What you want, it's what you wanna be. It's not what you're getting. It's what you wanna be. I wanna be that guy that can suffer.

• 1:40:10Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:40:11Speaker 00

For a long period of time. I wanna be that guy.

• 1:40:13Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:40:14Speaker 00

You know? The money or the jokes or all, those things come. They come.

• 1:40:21Speaker 00

  They come on their own.

• 1:40:22Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:40:22Speaker 00

Jokes come on their own. The only thing we can do is to grind.

• 1:40:26Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:40:27Speaker 00

So if you can figure how to do, you know, how to fall in love with that, then you got it.

• 1:40:32Mark Normand?

It's kinda like those boxers who are getting pummeled and they're going, "Ah!" You know, like, "Bring it on. I keep bombing and this joke is failing, but I'll take it."

• 1:40:40Sam Morril?

  That's very you.

• 1:40:42Sam Morril?

  You're Jake LaMotta?

• 1:40:43Mark Normand?

Yeah, Jake LaMotta. Hit me, hit me again.

• 1:40:46Speaker 00

You never got me down, Ray.

• 1:40:48Mark Normand?

That ambulance bit, it hadn't gotten you down?

• 1:40:50Sam Morril?

I love that his rock bottom was becoming a comedian. That was his low point. He's like, "I'll do comedy."

• 1:40:56Mark Normand?

There's a lot of that. Stormy Daniels and Steve-O and all these people, you're like, "Get out of comedy."

• 1:41:01Speaker 00

  But don't worry.

• 1:41:04Speaker 00

  Don't worry.

• 1:41:05Mark Normand?

Yeah, it just kills me when I'm like, oh, I'm going to Dr. Grin's or the Comedy Castle and Mark Ridley's and you're like, oh, this reality stars?

• 1:41:13Sam Morril?

You guys aren't playing to the same crowd, though.

• 1:41:15Mark Normand?

  No, god, no.

• 1:41:16Speaker 00

The comedy ecosystem, only the NFL approaches the comedy ecosystem. Discarding the unwanted.

• 1:41:24Mark Normand?

Yeah, ain't that the truth? CTE.

• 1:41:28Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:41:31Mark Normand?

Well, we don't want to plug your Beacon dates here.

• 1:41:33Sam Morril?

Jerry Seinfeld at the Beacon, yeah, of course. Definitely don't miss this.

• 1:41:37Speaker 00

  All right.

• 1:41:38Sam Morril?

December 19th and 20th, is that what it says? My eyesight sucks.

• 1:41:41Mark Normand?

No, that's old. That's October. Yeah, we need the new dates.

• 1:41:44Speaker 00

  No, it's December, yeah, something.

• 1:41:47Mark Normand?

  20th, 19th and 20th, okay.

• 1:41:49Sam Morril?

At the Beacon Theater and in January as well. Don't, I mean, this is, it's a great show and it's the Beacon. It's like the best venue ever.

• 1:41:57Mark Normand?

  Yeah, you better believe it.

• 1:41:58Speaker 00

Good place to hear a comic. That's why I like playing it. Anybody that says, I saw you there, I know, I'm what happened.

• 1:42:04Mark Normand?

  Right, right.

• 1:42:06Sam Morril?

  It's a good one.

• 1:42:06Mark Normand?

It's a great one, that little elevator, all of it.

• 1:42:08Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 1:42:10Mark Normand?

I'm back in the clubs to work out a new hour.

• 1:42:12Speaker 00

And how long was that take?

• 1:42:14Mark Normand?

  I'll do a year.

• 1:42:15Speaker 00

  Wow.

• 1:42:16Mark Normand?

Yeah, really grind it out, really eat shit just for...

• 1:42:19Speaker 00

And what about the income? Not concerned?

• 1:42:23Mark Normand?

There's a dip, there's a dip, but you can add some shows.

• 1:42:27Sam Morril?

You still do pretty well on the farm.

• 1:42:28Mark Normand?

Yeah, you sell out, you hit the bonus.

• 1:42:29Speaker 00

And you do the same way?

• 1:42:30Sam Morril?

Yeah, we do the same thing. I'm back in clubs right now to, just to make sure I'm tight for when I tape. So I'm gonna tape, so I just want the repetition, but, yeah.

• 1:42:39Speaker 00

  Great.

• 1:42:39Mark Normand?

Yeah, so I'm at Kansas City, they got a Funny Bone there now, Des Moines, baby. Really doing it. Brea, California, Bend, Oregon, couple casinos, that's where the income is really at. Grand Ron, never even heard of that? New Brunswick, Stress Factory, San Antonio and Tulsa. Really...

• 1:42:59Sam Morril?

Your kids never gonna see it.

• 1:43:02Mark Normand?

This is what you call the neglect tour.

• 1:43:06Mark Normand?

  Indianapolis, all that Buffalo.

• 1:43:08Speaker 00

  My kid's a stripper tour.

• 1:43:14Mark Normand?

Portland, Providence, Lexington. All right, we're going far. Daniel Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Spokane.

• 1:43:20Sam Morril?

  All right.

• 1:43:20Mark Normand?

  What do you got?

• 1:43:21Sam Morril?

  Yeah, I got, uh...

• 1:43:22Mark Normand?

  Carnegie Hall, baby!

• 1:43:23Speaker 00

  That's the big one.

• 1:43:25Sam Morril?

  That's past, yeah, we got...

• 1:43:26Speaker 00

  Oh, you did that already?

• 1:43:27Mark Normand?

  Well, when this comes out.

• 1:43:28Speaker 00

  December 4th.

• 1:43:29Sam Morril?

Yeah, yeah, but this is, yeah, but this is coming out the 14th.

• 1:43:32Mark Normand?

  14.

• 1:43:33Sam Morril?

So, uh, yeah, we got, uh, Stanford, Connecticut in February. Uh, I'm doing Omaha, Nebraska. It's a great club. Uh, my funny bone.

• 1:43:41Mark Normand?

  Tough life.

• 1:43:41Sam Morril?

  DC Improv in January, yeah.

• 1:43:43Speaker 00

You mean to tell me this works? People are paying attention to this.

• 1:43:46Mark Normand?

I can't believe it. Well, they want to hear when their town pops up.

• 1:43:49Sam Morril?

And then we got, yes, uh, and then the big one, yeah, Stanford, Connecticut. We got that Chicago and the big one, uh, Tampa Theater.

• 1:43:55Speaker 00

Woo! I am so clicked off at this point. No way.

• 1:44:00Speaker 00

  Waiting to hear my town.

• 1:44:04Sam Morril?

Uh, and go see Jerry at the Beacon. Jerry, thanks so much, man.

• 1:44:07Speaker 00

Thank you for helping me with the beacon.

• 1:44:12Mark Normand?

Go see the ambulance, bit bomb.

• 1:44:16Mark Normand?

  All right, thanks, folks.

• 1:44:17Speaker 00

  See you on Kill Tony.

• 1:45:06Speaker 04
