This episode of Smartless is sponsored by Google Book. So the other day, I wanted to make invitations for my dog Ricky's birthday party. And I've got three things open on my laptop. An adorable photo of Ricky, a picture of a birthday cake, and the RSVP details. Thing is, as much as I look like one, I'm not a canine birthday party invitation designer. That's where Google Book comes in. It's a whole new kind of laptop with a feature called Magic Pointer. I just click the photos and different elements on my screen, and boom, Magic Pointer designs a customized birthday party invitation for Ricky. • 2:56Sean Hayes?

What are we looking at today?

• 2:58Jason Bateman?

Well, there's a little bit of a congestion over there.

• 3:00Will Arnett?

JB, you lost your license. Bring the chopper back. You lost your license. You're not supposed to

• 3:05Jason Bateman?

We're all gonna switch other programming here. Welcome to Smartless.

• 3:27Sean Hayes?

Doesn't Jason kinda look like he just woke up?

• 3:31Jason Bateman?

  Careful.

• 3:32Sean Hayes?

He just woke up, he's gonna have a Pull a cereal and watch cartoons.

• 3:36Jason Bateman?

I've had cereal. I've had my granola, my sugar-free gluten-free granola with my unsweetened almond milk. I wanna just blow my brains out.

• 3:45Sean Hayes?

  That sounds like

• 3:46Jason Bateman?

Jesus. He's halfway describing it. It's just terrible.

• 3:51Will Arnett?

You're finally getting it. You're finally getting it.

• 3:54Jason Bateman?

Fuck. My sugar-free yerba mate, fuck

• 3:58Sean Hayes?

  That looks like urine.

• 3:59Jason Bateman?

Well, it's not, it's not worth it, right? Will, didn't you say I was gonna, I was gonna die without a whole lot of water retention, but it'll, I'll be young.

• 4:07Will Arnett?

And remember, and the whole idea is that I was gonna be at your bedside eating a sundae with 30 years to go.

• 4:12Sean Hayes?

Right. And me and my wooden teeth will be sitting in a casket.

• 4:17Jason Bateman?

  I uh.

• 4:19Will Arnett?

JB, you got like a really like, you got like a sort of sexy like post-sex look. Did you just?

• 4:23Jason Bateman?

  That's what I'm saying.

• 4:24Will Arnett?

  Right?

• 4:25Jason Bateman?

Do I, does the hand count?

• 4:28Will Arnett?

  Oh, no.

• 4:29Jason Bateman?

  No, I don't do that.

• 4:31Will Arnett?

Talk to the hand. Keep talking to the hand. Keep talking to the hand.

• 4:36Jason Bateman?

I just, uh, I'm, I'm just, I was telling Sean, I just did some reading. That's all. This is just me and reading, reading face.

• 4:42Sean Hayes?

This is reading for the, for the, for the movie you're doing, yeah?

• 4:45Jason Bateman?

For maybe what might follow. You know, we, you, we, you know, we're, we're hustlers, you know?

• 4:51Sean Hayes?

  Sure, we are hustlers.

• 4:51Jason Bateman?

We're constantly getting hired and fired and you gotta try to

• 4:57Jason Bateman?

build a bridge to the next check.

• 4:59Sean Hayes?

  That's right.

• 5:00Jason Bateman?

  Always.

• 5:01Will Arnett?

Yep. I know, you're so exhausted.

• 5:04Jason Bateman?

Why don't we just stop? How about we just stop?

• 5:06Sean Hayes?

  I know.

• 5:06Jason Bateman?

  Let's just stop.

• 5:07Sean Hayes?

You know, because you know what? I hear from you if we stopped.

• 5:10Jason Bateman?

Let's just chat. We'll just chat once a week.

• 5:13Sean Hayes?

  Just chat.

• 5:14Jason Bateman?

You know, and we don't, we don't have to do any reading and we don't have to do any, you know?

• 5:19Sean Hayes?

  It hurts to read.

• 5:20Jason Bateman?

Getting up at crazy hours and, and being away from our families and stuff.

• 5:25Will Arnett?

Oh my God, your voice is kind of wormly.

• 5:27Jason Bateman?

I'm here and lonely in New York.

• 5:29Will Arnett?

I know. I'm gonna be there, I'm gonna be there soon, JB, and for, for the first couple of weeks, I'm gonna be across the street from you until I move in to my place.

• 5:39Jason Bateman?

  Yeah?

• 5:39Will Arnett?

Yeah. I'm gonna be right there, so I'm gonna come and I'll come and spoon you at night.

• 5:43Sean Hayes?

I'll, I'm there in June, late June.

• 5:45Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, we're good.

• 5:46Will Arnett?

We're gonna be gone. So, uh, yeah, JB, but I'm gonna.

• 5:49Sean Hayes?

  I knew that was coming.

• 5:51Jason Bateman?

You see, that's what, that's what's generous about us three. We each take turns at setting each other up to

• 5:56Sean Hayes?

  Right.

• 5:57Jason Bateman?

  hurt our own feelings.

• 5:58Sean Hayes?

Now JB, do you like being isolated like that by yourself there and all that stuff?

• 6:02Jason Bateman?

I do. You know, I was thinking the other day that I have lived in a number of these temporary situations because of, of work.

• 6:11Jason Bateman?

  In various places around.

• 6:13Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 6:14Jason Bateman?

And, um, and, and I was actually, I was thinking, well, I'm kind of surprised that I've made a friend of that. And I'm kind of comfortable with that because you know, you know me, I am so, I'm so locked and, and committed and comfortable in my, in my cave at home. Like, I don't, I don't leave.

• 6:29Will Arnett?

But you create a cave, you create a cave everywhere you go.

• 6:32Jason Bateman?

It's true. I'm good about like immediately, just like what's my.

• 6:35Will Arnett?

Every time you get into rental, I remember in Atlanta, when I was living in that building underneath, beneath you, you had your cave there with your couch and your thing, right?

• 6:41Jason Bateman?

Yeah, the couch has got to be in a situation where I can be laying down, looking, uh, yes, so that I'm looking across my body, over my feet, right to the TV.

• 6:52Will Arnett?

Yeah, the couch is again perpendicular to the television.

• 6:55Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 6:56Will Arnett?

  And then.

• 6:57Jason Bateman?

If I've got that, I'm comfy.

• 6:59Will Arnett?

Remember on tour, every hotel, immediately couch.

• 7:02Jason Bateman?

  Right in the corner.

• 7:03Will Arnett?

And then the TV on, JB would.

• 7:04Jason Bateman?

  Right in the corner.

• 7:05Will Arnett?

And then you come out to Long Island, you get to my house, everybody's outside and JB's on the couch.

• 7:09Jason Bateman?

I know, but that's your, but then unfortunately, that's usually, that's usually the host's spot. That's your spot.

• 7:14Will Arnett?

No, no, because remember I had those two.

• 7:17Jason Bateman?

  You do the corner.

• 7:17Will Arnett?

  I have those two corners.

• 7:18Jason Bateman?

Yeah, you do the other, why do you do that?

• 7:20Sean Hayes?

Well, but every single, yeah, and every single time you come over here, Jay, you, you, you got your spot on the couch, exactly how you just described.

• 7:27Jason Bateman?

And I feel bad that this must be, this is the prime spot. Sean, I'm sorry, I'm in your spot. Will, I'm sorry, I'm in your spot. And you guys don't, you don't care.

• 7:35Sean Hayes?

Nobody, you, you got, that's your spot.

• 7:36Will Arnett?

But I do the same, like last summer, somebody came in and we were watching, uh, soccer with, and, uh, Bradley and I were in that same configuration and we were both asleep and my brother came in and we were both on the couch midday.

• 7:48Sean Hayes?

  What's your brother's name?

• 7:49Will Arnett?

Quick, quick, quick, quick. Chuck, Chuck, Chuck, Chuck.

• 7:51Jason Bateman?

  Okay, good.

• 7:51Sean Hayes?

  Wait, Jay, but Jason.

• 7:52Will Arnett?

Chuck Arnett, quick shout out to Chuck Arnett.

• 7:54Jason Bateman?

  Hey, Charles.

• 7:56Sean Hayes?

Charles. Wait, but Jason, I just need to know that you don't get, so after a while of being isolated, don't you miss people and, and the opposite of that?

• 8:09Jason Bateman?

Uh, I would if, if, if in those situations, when I'm isolated by myself in a foreign city, I'm not spending 12 hours during the day with hundreds of new people and my new family on each one of those, right? So it's, it's again, it's that black, white situation. There's no.

• 8:23Will Arnett?

Are we, are we now able to, are we allowed to talk about your new family? Cause I didn't know if the public knew about this or whatever.

• 8:31Will Arnett?

This is exciting news that we're getting to do it. We've just scooped hard eleven at TMZ.

• 8:37Jason Bateman?

  With three children.

• 8:38Will Arnett?

  Yeah, it's amazing.

• 8:42Will Arnett?

  I'll tell you what's amazing.

• 8:44Jason Bateman?

  Oh, really?

• 8:45Will Arnett?

Our surprise guest, he is one of the greats when it comes to comedy. He, he got his start on Mad TV. He's been in over a hundred episodes. He's been in so many things that we love. These days, he's in a show that he created with Mindy Kaling that's coming back for season two called Running Point. But he's also lately been known as one of the breakout amazing hilarious stars of Apple TV's The Studio. Guys, it's our, our friend, it's Ike Barrett.

• 9:17Jason Bateman?

First, can I just shout out Chuck Arnett real quick? Hey, Chucky, Chucky, Youngin. Yeah, yeah. Oh, Ike, this is great. This is, this, now this is a guest, Will.

• 9:28Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 9:29Jason Bateman?

I'm going, this is a guest. This is one of the guys. This is weekend worthy.

• 9:33Will Arnett?

Ike, I'm so glad you're here. You're one, I was thinking about this morning, I was, I was pouring myself a coffee this morning and I said to myself, I said.

• 9:41Jason Bateman?

Great, fill us in, what did you, you put some sugar in it too?

• 9:44Will Arnett?

No stevia, well, if I'm being real, truvia and then some ripple, half and half. Cause it's.

• 9:50Jason Bateman?

  Ripple.

• 9:51Will Arnett?

  Yeah, it's so good.

• 9:52Jason Bateman?

  It's pee based?

• 9:54Will Arnett?

  Don dairy.

• 9:56Jason Bateman?

Ripple, you're talking about cheap liquor?

• 9:58Will Arnett?

  Yeah, so.

• 9:59Jason Bateman?

  And it's pee based?

• 10:01Will Arnett?

Ike, Ike, you and I met, you and, you and I met, I don't know, it is pee based. It's made in Canada, by the way, don't you know, eh?

• 10:08Jason Bateman?

  Oh, is that right?

• 10:10Will Arnett?

Hey, hey bud, I got some peas here, should we make some half and half?

• 10:15Will Arnett?

  Fucking let her ripple.

• 10:17Jason Bateman?

  Give her.

• 10:19Will Arnett?

Fucking give her, bud. Oh, is that right, eh?

• 10:23Jason Bateman?

  Wait, Ike, where are you?

• 10:24Will Arnett?

So Ike, I just want to say, before we find out where you are, Ike, we've known each other for about 20 years. And I was thinking, and I was thinking, Ike is one of those guys you're always happy to see.

• 10:35Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 10:35Will Arnett?

  In person.

• 10:36Jason Bateman?

  Come on.

• 10:37Will Arnett?

  On the screen.

• 10:38Jason Bateman?

  That's true.

• 10:38Will Arnett?

Doing stuff, it's a rare, no, you're, you're one of the rare ones in that way.

• 10:41Jason Bateman?

Is there something darker there that you've kept hidden from? Let's talk about it, let's talk about it. First time my dad beat the hell out of me.

• 10:50Speaker 03

Oh wow. Hey guys, I should say first, I'm a huge fan of this show.

• 10:55Will Arnett?

  No, come on.

• 10:55Speaker 03

I'm a massive fan. I've listened to, I think, every episode.

• 10:58Jason Bateman?

  Try to butter up early.

• 11:00Speaker 03

This is my plan, is to really.

• 11:02Jason Bateman?

What's your favorite, what's your least favorite?

• 11:03Speaker 03

  No, kidding.

• 11:04Will Arnett?

  Of the three of us.

• 11:05Speaker 03

  We can't name names.

• 11:06Will Arnett?

You can't name names. Last time I saw Ike in person, I surprised him one morning, he was staying at Amy's apartment in New York, and I was coming to pick up a jacket or something.

• 11:14Jason Bateman?

  Can we stop there?

• 11:15Will Arnett?

Yeah, yeah. No, that's not breaking news, that's not breaking news. They're not, Amy and Ike are not together anymore.

• 11:19Speaker 03

No, no, not anymore. She let me her apartment while I was doing a Broadway show.

• 11:24Will Arnett?

He was doing a Broadway show.

• 11:25Speaker 03

Greatest thing ever to stay in that place, my god.

• 11:28Will Arnett?

So Ike was doing, Ike was doing this play on Broadway.

• 11:33Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 11:33Will Arnett?

And you were kind of right in the middle? Were you just starting or forget?

• 11:37Speaker 03

We were, we were right in the middle when I saw you.

• 11:39Jason Bateman?

  What, what, what was it?

• 11:40Speaker 03

Yeah, I was in Chicago, I was playing Roxy Hart.

• 11:44Speaker 03

I got blasted by the critics, and rightfully so, quite frankly.

• 11:46Jason Bateman?

  They didn't buy it, huh?

• 11:48Speaker 03

They didn't like it, they didn't like my take on it.

• 11:50Jason Bateman?

Cause I played it just as like a bro.

• 11:52Speaker 03

Yeah, you followed Cheeto Rivera. Yeah, it didn't catch.

• 11:55Jason Bateman?

You didn't try to do anything feminine at all with it? You just a total bro take?

• 12:00Speaker 03

Yeah, no, like. Yeah, I reached for the gun.

• 12:04Jason Bateman?

Now Ike, have you done a bunch of theater, or was that just the one, the one pop there in Chicago?

• 12:09Speaker 03

I started with, you know, improv in Chicago back in the day, but that was my first time doing The Great White Way. Can I still say that?

• 12:16Jason Bateman?

Did people come backstage and visit you after the show?

• 12:19Speaker 03

  Oh no, we're not.

• 12:19Will Arnett?

  Hang on, shut up Sean.

• 12:21Jason Bateman?

  We're creating a consensus here.

• 12:23Will Arnett?

Did people come and say, how do you after the show?

• 12:25Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 12:26Jason Bateman?

  And did you enjoy that?

• 12:28Speaker 03

I did, yeah. I mean, we had friends come backstage, but then you do the stage door. You do the stage door, which is crazy.

• 12:33Jason Bateman?

  It's called act three.

• 12:35Speaker 03

Act three, you go out and you schmooze and you sign autographs and take selfies, and that really touched me, I thought.

• 12:41Will Arnett?

And you give it, right, and you give it to other people, cause you do it for them, cause it's not all about you, right? Go ahead Ike, Jason just.

• 12:46Speaker 03

  It's not all about me.

• 12:47Jason Bateman?

Wait, but wait, hold Sean, why wouldn't we call that act four, outside? Are we talking about a typical? Cause usually things are in two acts. Yeah. Aren't they? It's usually, it's a three act play, isn't it? Well, in plays and musicals, there's two acts.

• 12:59Will Arnett?

God, I gotta get you the internet.

• 13:00Jason Bateman?

Why? Just because of the, the what you call it, the halftime there? The intermission?

• 13:08Jason Bateman?

Is there a show during halftime?

• 13:10Will Arnett?

Hang on, I'm gonna do everybody a favor. Jason, I'm about to do you a favor. Today's guest, it's Ike Barinholtz.

• 13:16Jason Bateman?

  Good, quick edit point there.

• 13:18Will Arnett?

We can just take it all.

• 13:21Will Arnett?

No, you like, you like people coming back because this, Jason's right, that we are trying to figure out, this is a long-term study that we're doing over here at Smartless.

• 13:30Jason Bateman?

I hear that you are supposed, if you are somewhat famous.

• 13:34Speaker 03

Oh my god, here we go.

• 13:35Jason Bateman?

You are somewhat obligated to go backstage afterwards, regardless of whether you know anyone in the cast, and go, you know, say hi to them and tell them what you thought about the show. And I've just, I've just thought that that would be presumptuous and also would delay those actors getting home and resting.

• 13:50Will Arnett?

  Ike, thoughts?

• 13:52Speaker 03

I, I, it really depends on the celebrity. Like, for instance, Jason, if you were there and you came backstage, it would be so exciting, we would take pictures, everyone would be excited. But if like, I don't know.

• 14:04Jason Bateman?

  Uh oh, careful.

• 14:05Speaker 03

Rob Schneider showed up, I'm just, he's a name, I'm throwing out there, shots fired. But like, you know what I mean, or someone who was like.

• 14:11Jason Bateman?

Oh, we gotta stay behind for a person X, Y, or Z. Right.

• 14:15Speaker 03

Yeah, so, so it could, it could be, it goes both ways.

• 14:18Will Arnett?

How fun would it be, Ike, if you were backstage and all of a sudden Jason came back and he just actually said it, he on the, he just said, "Hey, I'm famous, so I'm gonna come back."

• 14:27Jason Bateman?

So let's talk, and where should we sit? Cause I've got notes. Uh, do you want to just go back into your dressing room?

• 14:32Speaker 03

  Is it locked?

• 14:33Will Arnett?

Just famous guy to famous guy, you know?

• 14:37Jason Bateman?

I know what you were going for, but let me tell you what's reading.

• 14:41Will Arnett?

Well, you can go ahead and take the wink out of it, that would be, that's a lot. That, that's a lot.

• 14:47Jason Bateman?

Now, I was sitting about mid-house and I really wasn't feeling there in the third act.

• 14:52Speaker 03

  You were mid-house?

• 14:52Will Arnett?

I hate Famous Jason, I hate Famous Jason so much.

• 14:56Speaker 03

Wait, the fact that you have at the ready, I know what you were going for, but here's what's reading.

• 15:03Sean Hayes?

Like you have that in your head, ready to go.

• 15:05Jason Bateman?

Well, I'm getting ready to direct over here, you know, I'm in prep.

• 15:08Will Arnett?

Yeah, he's in prep. I saw, I saw a video of JB and, and our buddy Sam Rockwell at the Knicks game. And it was, it was footage at MSG and they're walking and Jason's talked to him, it looked like he was giving him notes on the way to their seats.

• 15:23Jason Bateman?

  We haven't started shooting yet.

• 15:24Will Arnett?

We haven't started shooting. And about Rockwell, I'm like, hey, man, I just came to watch the fucking Knicks game.

• 15:29Jason Bateman?

I know what you're planning on doing. Let me tell you how that's probably gonna read.

• 15:34Will Arnett?

And Sammy's so nice, he probably just took it, but god, what exhausting.

• 15:38Jason Bateman?

Shout out, before we're done here, shout out to the nice folks over there at MSG for accommodating me and Sam there, front row center. Thank you, Trey and the group over there. It's just, and those Knicks, they brought it home that night.

• 15:51Will Arnett?

  They're a classy organization.

• 15:52Jason Bateman?

I don't know when this is airing, but it's a good time.

• 15:54Sean Hayes?

  They're looking good.

• 15:54Will Arnett?

They look pretty good. That's what Sean's been, Sean's been saying this all season.

• 15:58Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 15:59Will Arnett?

  So.

• 15:59Jason Bateman?

  Just on a loop.

• 16:00Will Arnett?

On a fucking loop of what it is.

• 16:02Sean Hayes?

Are you guys talking about Knicks?

• 16:03Will Arnett?

  Yeah, here we go.

• 16:04Jason Bateman?

Spell it, spell it, Sean. Spell it real quick.

• 16:06Sean Hayes?

  K-N.

• 16:07Jason Bateman?

  And what's it short for?

• 16:09Sean Hayes?

  Nicaragua.

• 16:11Jason Bateman?

  Knickerbockers.

• 16:12Sean Hayes?

Is Nicaragua. Oh, is it really Knickerbocker?

• 16:14Will Arnett?

  Yeah, it is, yeah.

• 16:15Jason Bateman?

  Higher, higher, Sean, higher.

• 16:16Sean Hayes?

  Is it really Knickerbocker?

• 16:19Will Arnett?

  Listen.

• 16:21Jason Bateman?

Higher and just a, just a dash more gay. And still rolling?

• 16:26Sean Hayes?

Okay. Is it, is it really Knickerbocker?

• 16:34Will Arnett?

  Wait.

• 16:35Jason Bateman?

Welcome Ike Barinholtz to the show.

• 16:38Will Arnett?

Welcome to the show. It's Ike Barinholtz. Another cut point.

• 16:42Jason Bateman?

  Wow.

• 16:42Will Arnett?

Um, hey, now, listen, I was gonna, I, I was gonna have a different intro for Sean, but I was gonna open with, because Sean, cause I, cause Ike, Ike, you're from Chicago and obviously the question is, I'm from Glen Allen.

• 16:59Will Arnett?

Oh Glen Allen, have you been to Glen Allen?

• 17:01Speaker 03

I have been to Glen Allen. I've been to all the Glens. A lot of Glens in Chicago.

• 17:04Jason Bateman?

  Yeah Glen View.

• 17:05Will Arnett?

  Have you ever been to?

• 17:08Jason Bateman?

  Portillo's.

• 17:09Speaker 03

I've been to Portillo's many a time, my friend. Chocolate cake shake. They have a milkshake where they dump a big slice of cake.

• 17:17Jason Bateman?

Jason said in Ozark, chocolate cake shake from Portillo's and he doesn't remember that.

• 17:22Speaker 03

Catherine Han, by the way, is watching Ozark now.

• 17:25Jason Bateman?

The best. Oh my God, she just sent me a text yesterday as a matter of fact. That's weird, you must be working with her.

• 17:31Speaker 03

  Yes, yes.

• 17:32Jason Bateman?

Yeah, she sent me a text. She said, hey, I'm really embarrassingly late on this, but you're great in Ozark. Or something like that. I was just like, Catherine Han, the greatest love of my life. And I said, I was just so excited that she's seeing it for the first time. I was just like, oh. I was so tempted to say, what's your favorite part?

• 17:52Speaker 03

Yeah, she would come to set and she's like, Ozark is amazing. We're like, we know.

• 17:56Jason Bateman?

I wonder why she started watching that. I wonder if it like.

• 17:59Will Arnett?

She must have tapped everything else out.

• 18:04Jason Bateman?

All her subscriptions had maxed out and.

• 18:08Will Arnett?

She found an old iPad that belonged to a neighbor and it was loaded up.

• 18:13Speaker 03

Han told me a story. She had Laura Dern's phone number and she would text Laura Dern sometimes and had like a little bit of a texting relationship with her. And then when David Lynch passed away, Han reached out and was like, I'm so sorry about your collaborator. I know how much he meant to you. And the person said, I don't think this is who you think it is. And it was Tina Fey's stand-in from This Is Where I Leave You.

• 18:49Jason Bateman?

  And there's years of texts.

• 18:51Speaker 03

Ten years of texts. Who she thought was Laura Dern.

• 18:56Sean Hayes?

Just staying in loose casual contact with over the years.

• 19:00Will Arnett?

  No fucking way.

• 19:01Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 19:01Speaker 03

  Oh, got it.

• 19:02Sean Hayes?

Wait a minute. Ike, where are you? Are you in New York right now?

• 19:05Speaker 03

I'm in, I'm in London, mate. Here's proof. I'm in London. Look, the bottle lid doesn't come off.

• 19:10Sean Hayes?

I know. How annoying was that? On all the plastic bottles, they don't come off. They just hang there.

• 19:14Jason Bateman?

  Is that true?

• 19:15Speaker 03

Yeah. They just kind of hang there.

• 19:16Jason Bateman?

That's not, that's, that's not a bad design idea there.

• 19:18Speaker 03

It's kind of smart, actually, if you think about it.

• 19:20Sean Hayes?

But it's hard to screw it back on.

• 19:22Speaker 03

And then you do sometimes like.

• 19:23Will Arnett?

I was wondering why you had, you, you, you got your mic, uh, jacked on your, uh, on your rolling luggage.

• 19:29Speaker 03

Yeah, Rob, is this no video?

• 19:32Sean Hayes?

Is that on your luggage is the microphone on your?

• 19:34Speaker 03

Rob was like, you got some books, right? I was like, no, this hotel room doesn't have any books, so I have it on my roller bag.

• 19:40Sean Hayes?

I love you said, wait, wait, it's no video, right? It's no video?

• 19:44Sean Hayes?

It is a great composition there with your little frame there. There's one little wheel, bottom left.

• 19:49Will Arnett?

Are you shooting, are you shooting the studio over there right now? Is that what's happening?

• 19:52Speaker 03

We are actually here for, we're here for the BAFTAs, mate.

• 19:55Will Arnett?

  Oh, nice.

• 19:56Speaker 03

We got nominated for a bloody BAFTA.

• 19:57Sean Hayes?

  Oh, that's great. Congratulations.

• 19:59Speaker 03

Yeah, it's very cool. It's weird, though, it's that we're best foreign show. So all the other shows that are nominated, some of them I've heard of, but a lot of them are like BBC one shows that are like, are you quite through now, sir? You know what I mean? Just like weird British shows that you don't know in the States.

• 20:17Will Arnett?

Uh, well, that's fun. Congrats on the thing. So, so dude, you've done so much stuff. We, we mentioned, so let's talk, you, you did start in Chicago. We're talking about.

• 20:26Sean Hayes?

Did you grow up in Chicago, Ike?

• 20:28Speaker 03

Yes, I grew up in Uptown, exactly one mile away from Wrigley Field.

• 20:32Sean Hayes?

Oh, wow. In the city like that.

• 20:34Speaker 03

Right in the heart of the city, right there, yeah.

• 20:36Will Arnett?

Yeah, in the city. Not some bullshit 80 miles away, you know, I'm from, I'm from Chicago.

• 20:41Sean Hayes?

Nothing but fucking tire tread marks all over the road.

• 20:46Sean Hayes?

No, I used to, well, Wrigley, Wrigley, near Wrigley is, is Boys Town. I used to.

• 20:50Speaker 03

I basically honestly kind of grew up in Boys Town.

• 20:52Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, all the gays everywhere.

• 20:54Speaker 03

We would go to the gay parade.

• 20:55Sean Hayes?

Wait, it's, it's super gay around Wrigley Field?

• 20:58Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 20:59Sean Hayes?

  Is that right?

• 21:00Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 21:00Sean Hayes?

  Hmm.

• 21:01Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 21:03Speaker 03

  We'll be right back.

• 21:06Sean Hayes?

• 25:06Sean Hayes?

And now, back to the show.

• 25:09Will Arnett?

So you grew up in the city and I know that you, so you're sort of-

• 25:13Sean Hayes?

  Second City and all that?

• 25:14Will Arnett?

Yeah, was improv. You kind of, you started in improv on stage.

• 25:18Sean Hayes?

Big improv guy. I saw, yeah, I, college didn't really work. And then I went to the Improv Olympics, like 10-year anniversary show and I saw-

• 25:28Speaker 03

Amy Poehler, I saw Adam McKay. Tim Meadows in particular was so, so funny that I was like, I'm gonna sign up for improv classes. And I really just immersed myself in that whole.

• 25:40Jason Bateman?

  That's amazing.

• 25:40Speaker 03

  The trifecta, the trifecta.

• 25:42Will Arnett?

Were there people who were kind of in your year back then who you still are, work with or tight with? Like who else?

• 25:48Speaker 03

Oh, yeah. I mean, Jack McBrayer is a very dear friend of mine.

• 25:51Will Arnett?

  No, we don't consider him.

• 25:52Speaker 03

You don't, you don't like Jack?

• 25:53Will Arnett?

No, Jack is a persona de grata.

• 25:56Speaker 03

Yeah, he's not, he's not that great. But like Seth Meyers was kind of my generation. Sidakis was around there. John Lutz, like that crew was around there. Lutz, one of the all time killers.

• 26:07Will Arnett?

One of the all time greats. Love Lutz. Yeah, Seth.

• 26:10Speaker 03

I mean, what, what, what, between Second City, UCB and Groundlings? I mean, if there was like a little Olympics going, how do you think those, those three would?

• 26:21Will Arnett?

Well, there's so much, there's so much crossover.

• 26:23Speaker 03

Right. Yeah, there is a lot of crossover now. I mean, Groundlings is more like.

• 26:27Jason Bateman?

UCB doesn't go back that far, right? What, which is the oldest?

• 26:30Speaker 03

Yeah, like in like 95 or so, Amy and, and the guys kind of left Chicago.

• 26:37Will Arnett?

And Matt, and Matt, and Ian. So Dell Close, he knows this. Dell Close was, was the guy at Improv Olympic and they all studied with him and he was your director.

• 26:43Speaker 03

Was, was Groundlings or, or Second City the oldest? Second City's the oldest. Second City was like 1962. Like Ed Asner was in the original Second City. Wow, really? Yeah, yeah, yeah. So there was, that, that goes way back. Groundlings, I think is more like mid 70s hippies.

• 27:01Will Arnett?

So I, and did you not go, am I, do I have this wrong? You, did you go to Amsterdam?

• 27:06Jason Bateman?

  Sorry, Sean, we're recording something.

• 27:07Speaker 03

So wait one second. Look at, this is Favreau. This is at Second City. Favreau, that's me, right there. That's Jack McBrayer, right next to me. Wait, were you in a touring company? No, that was, we just went back for like, and, and Ramus, Harold Ramus, right there.

• 27:24Sean Hayes?

And then we just went back for like an anniversary, but the fact that you said Jack McPrayer, Second City, that's crazy. All of those people that came out there, including yourself, from that whole troupe and all of those things in Chicago, it's just, it doesn't happen anymore, it feels like.

• 27:37Speaker 03

The mid 90s improv scene was, was wild. It was really fun. And then I would work at Second City as like a busboy and I would see like Tina when she first started, like Scott Adcid, Brian Stack, a lot of the, you know, Conan guys, Jerry Miner, just amazing killers.

• 27:54Will Arnett?

Stack, one of the all time greats, one of the all time greats.

• 27:57Jason Bateman?

You know, Willie, anytime anybody brings up these, these, these folks, you, you know them all, but I, did you ever do any time at one of these improv groups?

• 28:07Will Arnett?

No, I was too dumb. Like I was living in New York and there wasn't that same thing and I wish I had. I didn't know about it.

• 28:13Jason Bateman?

Yeah, but you were going to a lot of them and you were hanging out with them a lot. This is even before Amy, right? It's probably how you met Amy.

• 28:17Will Arnett?

So when Amy, Amy first came to New York with, with Matt and Matt and Ian as UCB, they did the, they did Bucket of Truth and they did it at the West Bank downstairs and my then, one of my then agents, a man by the name of Peter Principato.

• 28:32Jason Bateman?

  Uh, my current manager.

• 28:34Will Arnett?

His current, Mike's current manager, said to me, you've got to go and see this group that I represent, these four doing this thing called Bucket of Truth. So I went there and that was 1996. They'd just moved in January of 96, I know all this. They moved in January of 96 to, to New York. I went and saw Bucket of Truth with my buddy, our buddy Duff and my then girlfriend, Missy Ager.

• 28:54Sean Hayes?

  I know Duff, yeah.

• 28:55Will Arnett?

Yeah. But anyway, I remember seeing those guys and being like, holy shit. Like, and this is what was going on in Chicago, what all you guys were, were doing. And it wasn't in New York and they brought it to New York, UCB.

• 29:06Jason Bateman?

  Mm-hmm.

• 29:06Will Arnett?

Amy and those guys. But it didn't exist. I wish I had done it. I was too dumb. And then by then I got to know everybody, obviously, because I was around all those.

• 29:13Speaker 03

Well, do you remember in like 2000, maybe two or three together, we did a reading of Jerry Lewis's The Day the Clown Cried?

• 29:20Will Arnett?

Fuck, yes. You, me, Cross, Glazer, John Glazer.

• 29:24Speaker 03

John Glazer, uh, God, who else? Rob Hube.

• 29:27Sean Hayes?

And for my sister, The Day the Clown Cried is about a clown that visits the kids in the Holocaust.

• 29:32Will Arnett?

Right. And it's a movie, a movie that famously was never released, right?

• 29:36Speaker 03

Yeah. Yeah. It was Jerry Lewis plays a Jewish clown who entertains the children as they're about to be murdered. And for some reason, they never released it.

• 29:44Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 29:45Jason Bateman?

But was it Jerry Lewis that killed it? Did he like try to bury it? Or was it the financier?

• 29:50Will Arnett?

  No, he.

• 29:51Speaker 03

I think Jerry Lewis himself was like, no, no, no, we can't, we can't show anyone this.

• 29:56Will Arnett?

But the rumor is, the rumor is that Harry Shearer has a copy of it. Like, is that really?

• 30:00Speaker 03

There are some clips on YouTube, there's some clips on YouTube, you could type it in, see like, like little, small moments and stuff.

• 30:06Will Arnett?

  Oh, really?

• 30:06Speaker 03

The whole thing isn't out there yet.

• 30:08Will Arnett?

Whoa. Yeah, we did that, I forgot about it, and there was a cra- that was so much fun and everybody, and that, not just everybody on the stage, but everybody in the audience, it was so much people of that era.

• 30:20Speaker 03

It was the first time I felt cool on stage, doing comedy, like there was cool people around and I felt very cool for the first time.

• 30:26Jason Bateman?

Now, let's go back, I heard, I heard you say something like, college did not work out for you, or something like that. It was a bit of a breeze over there, let's double back to that, and let's talk about, so from day one.

• 30:39Will Arnett?

He loves pain points, he loves hitting pain points.

• 30:41Jason Bateman?

So you show up, you got your suitcases, and go from there?

• 30:45Speaker 03

I, I wanted, I went into Boston University hoping I would be a politician, and then.

• 30:51Jason Bateman?

  Really?

• 30:51Speaker 03

  Really? Yeah, yeah.

• 30:53Jason Bateman?

Are you still interested in politics?

• 30:55Speaker 03

Um, I, I'm disgusted by it.

• 30:57Jason Bateman?

  Right, yeah.

• 30:58Speaker 03

  But I.

• 30:59Jason Bateman?

  Which is a yes, that's a yes.

• 31:00Speaker 03

I'm perverted, I know a lot about it, I read all this bullshit.

• 31:02Jason Bateman?

We don't have to talk about politics, but I'm just curious, okay. So you're studying poli sci at Boston U, so you're not a dummy?

• 31:07Speaker 03

I was going to, and then right away, I went crazy, where I was like, oh my God, if I'd never smoked pot or done mushrooms before, that started happening quite a bit.

• 31:16Jason Bateman?

You started to have some bad trips?

• 31:17Speaker 03

And then I just, the freedom of not having to do anything took me over, and I kind of went crazy for a couple of weeks, um, and watched movies over and over again.

• 31:27Jason Bateman?

  Yup.

• 31:28Speaker 03

And, like, I watched 2001 like seven or eight times.

• 31:31Jason Bateman?

  Same, Zeez?

• 31:32Speaker 03

Yeah, and I kind of halfway through the semester was like, this isn't, I'm not.

• 31:37Jason Bateman?

  I need more structure, right.

• 31:39Speaker 03

Yeah, and I just wasn't enjoying that, and so I, I.

• 31:44Jason Bateman?

  You couldn't handle the freedom?

• 31:46Speaker 03

I couldn't handle the freedom. I felt bad for my parents, so I told them everything was status quo and it was going great. And when I came home and finished the year, my dad, as a reward, took me to Las Vegas and LA on a vacation because I finished my first year of college. And literally on the way to the airport, my mom called and was like, "I just got a letter from BU. They're kicking him out." And that was problematic.

• 32:11Will Arnett?

Trip's still on, right? Trip's still on.

• 32:12Speaker 03

The trip was, the trip was literally, we were done and flying back home. And like, we started on a Southwest flight and my dad, for like, three hours, was like, "How could you do this to us?" And I was like, "I'm really sorry." But they, now they're very happy and everything's good.

• 32:28Will Arnett?

  Of course, they should be.

• 32:29Jason Bateman?

But, so then, so then you stay in Chicago and you just start some odd jobs and go into the comedy clubs. And at what point did you go all in on having a conversation with your parents about, "I'm gonna pursue entertainment"?

• 32:43Speaker 03

They knew that I was really enjoying improv and everything. And at that time, your kind of goal is to be on the Second City main stage and then eventually SNL. That's the ultimate trajectory. And after a few years, I auditioned for this theater group in Amsterdam called Boom Chicago, that you know, a lot of our friends have gone through. And that is where you are. Your job is acting. You don't have to have another day job. You just have to do shows at night. And I got hired by them and my parents. I told them, "Hey, this is it. I'm leaving. I'm doing this now. I'm an actor." And they have been, they're like, the most supportive parents. My dad became an actor. Like, you know what I mean?

• 33:17Jason Bateman?

  Oh, that's great.

• 33:18Speaker 03

It's like, it's crazy. They are, they are very, very proud.

• 33:21Will Arnett?

Wait, wait. I'm now remembering the reason I brought it up. I'm saying, I think the first time we met was like, 2001 or maybe two. And you and Josh Meyer, Seth's brother, came back from Amsterdam and came to, I mean, our old, old apartment.

• 33:33Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 33:35Will Arnett?

  Do you remember that?

• 33:35Speaker 03

  Yeah, dude.

• 33:36Will Arnett?

  And Farrell was there.

• 33:37Speaker 03

  Back, yes.

• 33:38Will Arnett?

  Yes.

• 33:39Speaker 03

It was right after she got hired by SNL.

• 33:42Will Arnett?

  Yes.

• 33:42Speaker 03

Yeah, it was that first season because Seth got hired at the same time. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's crazy. It's crazy. I've known you a long time, Will.

• 33:48Will Arnett?

That was 25 years ago, dude.

• 33:50Speaker 03

  Yeah, it's nuts.

• 33:51Will Arnett?

  Wow, okay.

• 33:52Speaker 03

  It's crazy.

• 33:53Will Arnett?

All right. So you, so you, then they go, "Okay, great. You're gonna do it. You're gonna, you're gonna be..." And they're supportive.

• 34:02Speaker 03

Very supportive. And, and, do you have brothers and sisters? Younger brother, and then he decided he wanted to be an actor too. And I was like, dude, don't do it. But he now, he works, he was, he was on Superstore for years and then creates shows and stuff. So we're like a, we're a showbiz family now. We're like, we're like the Arquettes.

• 34:22Jason Bateman?

So mom is the only one without a sad card at this point?

• 34:25Speaker 03

Mom is the only one. We're trying to Taft Hartley her and get her to like be on something. But she, she, she'll be tough, but we'll get her there. We'll get you there, Peggy.

• 34:35Will Arnett?

So, but how did you get dialed into that whole crew of all the comedy? How did you get in? What was your first foray into that world?

• 34:43Speaker 03

Well, well, came, moved to LA with Seth Meyers and Josh Meyers and my, my buddy, Dave. And, and for like a year and a half, I was like a busboy and just trying to break into stuff. But it was Mad TV was my first gig. I got hired with Josh Meyers. And we, I did five years on Mad TV.

• 34:58Will Arnett?

  Wow.

• 34:59Speaker 03

  Um, which was-

• 35:00Jason Bateman?

I watched a lot of those. I used to love you and Josh on it, truly.

• 35:03Speaker 03

It was, it was, you know, it was one of those shows. I loved doing it until I didn't. It was tough at the time because SNL, I think that's the best SNL cast ever, that like 2002 to 2008 ish, you know what I mean? That, that was just like Polar and, and Will and Wig and, and Fred. And it was just wild. And we would always get compared to them. And it was just tough because sometimes you wanted Mad to be a little bit better. You wanted it to kind of not have kind of like guests and stuff. But it was, it was a great job.

• 35:36Jason Bateman?

Didn't you guys have like a half hour jump start before? Did you guys come on at 11?

• 35:41Speaker 03

We did. We came on at 11. So we had a, a little bit of a head start. And it was, I will say, it was very fun. My first TV show, I'm still friends with those guys. Like Jordan was on there. Jordan Peele is like one of my best friends. And we had a, it was very fun. But towards the end, I was getting restless. And I was like, I need to be on a different show. I want to be on a sitcom. And then I left Mad TV and like literally did not work for like three and a half years.

• 36:05Jason Bateman?

Which was a bummer. That is the curse of a series, right? You start feeling like all the things you're not being able to do. And then you leave and it's like, oh, there's a lot of crickets out there.

• 36:13Will Arnett?

Yeah. Who was, who was the guy who famously did that? What was the guy? He was on that show?

• 36:16Jason Bateman?

  David Caruso, baby.

• 36:18Will Arnett?

  David Caruso.

• 36:19Speaker 03

  David Caruso, yeah.

• 36:21Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 36:21Jason Bateman?

Well, in fairness to him, there's a, there's a long list of folks that think.

• 36:25Will Arnett?

He ended up having a very long career and he had a big show after that, too. He was awesome.

• 36:29Speaker 03

  Yeah, he did do CSI.

• 36:30Will Arnett?

But then you did, and, and correct me if I'm wrong, so then after that, you do that and you have a, you do a couple of things here and there, but it was then, uh, The Mindy Project, right?

• 36:41Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 36:41Will Arnett?

  That was the next big.

• 36:42Speaker 03

Well, he basically, I did get, Danny McBride did cast me on Eastbound and Down at a time.

• 36:47Will Arnett?

  Okay, got it.

• 36:47Speaker 03

I just was not working and that was like a big deal for me.

• 36:51Will Arnett?

  Yes.

• 36:51Jason Bateman?

That show, that show, that, that group, uh, what a talented group.

• 36:55Speaker 03

They are the best. I just saw him.

• 36:57Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 36:58Speaker 03

I, I love them. They're so cool. They're so original and that was the first time I went onto a show that I was a diehard fan of.

• 37:04Jason Bateman?

So was it, was it a little nerve wracking at the beginning then? Was it, was it what you thought it was gonna be as a, just as a viewer?

• 37:11Speaker 03

I was nervous enough, just like, I hope I'm as funny as these guys, but I also had to be a baseball player. I had to be like the best pitcher in the world.

• 37:20Jason Bateman?

And you don't have a lot of baseball talent?

• 37:22Speaker 03

I have a little bit of baseball. I'm like a, I'm like a solid five, um, but it was, that was a little bit of pressure.

• 37:29Jason Bateman?

You don't look like you're throwing with your left hand, you know?

• 37:32Speaker 03

I don't look like, no, no, no. I've seen like bad, like Robert Redford's son in The Natural. Like when he throws it, it looks so bad. It looks so bad. I, I'm not that bad, but I'm not.

• 37:43Will Arnett?

I just saw a clip of The Natural the other day and Robert Redford, you know when he strikes out that guy in, when the train pulls over?

• 37:49Speaker 03

  Joe Don Baker, yeah.

• 37:50Will Arnett?

And it's, and, uh, Redford had a pretty good, uh, release.

• 37:53Jason Bateman?

  He had skills.

• 37:54Speaker 03

He, he was a good athlete. You could tell he's a good athlete and who's, who's not. It's pretty clear when you watch him.

• 38:00Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 38:00Speaker 03

But yeah, there was pressure, but it was like so much fun and I love those guys and from there.

• 38:04Will Arnett?

Would you consider yourself the Redford of Eastbound and Down?

• 38:07Speaker 03

Oh, hey, oh, for sure. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. The Redford and the Newman, quite frankly.

• 38:12Will Arnett?

And the Newman, of course, yeah, whatever.

• 38:13Speaker 03

  Both of them.

• 38:14Will Arnett?

So you do Eastbound and Down with those guys, but then the Mindy Project you do for a few years, you guys did like a lot.

• 38:20Speaker 03

  Six seasons, man.

• 38:21Will Arnett?

  Yeah, six seasons.

• 38:22Speaker 03

Wow. It's crazy now, we complain about 10, 10 episode shows and it's like we used to do 22 episodes. A year, every year, yeah.

• 38:29Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 38:29Speaker 03

  It was nuts.

• 38:30Will Arnett?

And through that process, you and Mindy get closer because you've ended up collaborating since then and you guys have written together, you guys created Running Point, I think I mentioned that.

• 38:39Speaker 03

Yeah, with Dave Stassen, my writing partner and best friend, who is the true showrunner. But the three of us, we love her.

• 38:45Will Arnett?

Look, we're not here to talk about Dave, okay?

• 38:47Speaker 03

Can we just talk about him for just a second?

• 38:48Will Arnett?

No, I mean, we're here to talk about you.

• 38:51Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 38:51Will Arnett?

And Chuck Arnett, but we're not here to talk about Dave, okay?

• 38:54Speaker 03

I don't know, I don't know if Jason remembers this, but in like 2019, I sat next to Jason at the Emmys, my wife, and I sat next to you and your wife.

• 39:02Will Arnett?

  He does not.

• 39:02Speaker 03

Wait, I think I do. Wait, I think I do. Right at the time, the, some horrible like abortion ban hit, uh, Georgia. Oh, Atlanta, yeah. Yeah, and, and we were talking about it and, and I was like, yeah, I actually do a lot of work with the ACLU. Uh oh. And Jason goes, have they filed a lawsuit yet? And I go, you know what? I don't know. He goes, well, you really have your talking points in order and they're lucky to have you as an ambassador.

• 39:26Will Arnett?

Wow. Like locked and loaded, ready to go, I didn't know him that well. I was like, oh my god.

• 39:34Speaker 03

That is really funny. I figured we'd skip a few dates and I'd just get right to Hurtful.

• 39:40Speaker 03

Sorry, I, I must have been nervous that night. No, it was very funny. You were too busy winning multiple Emmys that day. Nah, I didn't. Didn't Ozark win some, some Emmys? Ozark won a lot. That was, was that when I won for directing? Maybe? Yeah, I think I did.

• 39:55Will Arnett?

  Oh, here we go.

• 39:55Speaker 03

A few SAG Awards, he acts like he did. Yeah, let's go back.

• 39:58Will Arnett?

Is that when I won for directing?

• 40:00Speaker 03

  I can't remember.

• 40:01Will Arnett?

Oh, I, oh, sorry, that's my cue. Oh, you won for directing?

• 40:04Speaker 03

No, no, no, no, guys, just trim this part. Um, or, or just, just tag it.

• 40:09Will Arnett?

Why are you saying, why are you saying trim and but you're shaking your head no?

• 40:13Speaker 03

  Wait, is my camera on?

• 40:16Will Arnett?

So, but Ike, I wanted to get like, so you, what's awesome is, is that you, that you do all these shows and stuff and now you're kind of, you've expanded and you're, you're, you're writing and creating shows with Dave, your writing partner. And, and you guys are, and you're, you've got a kind of a very robust career going in a lot of different ways. And you're doing, you're creating Running Point, you're on that. You're doing the studio with, with Seth and Evan, those guys, which is awesome. You're, you're so good on that show.

• 40:49Jason Bateman?

  Real busty right now.

• 40:51Sean Hayes?

Yeah, it's such a good show.

• 40:52Will Arnett?

You are so good on that show, dude. It's amazing.

• 40:55Speaker 03

That's really nice, you guys. It's really fun. We're like, we got like three weeks left of shooting season two and it's, it's, it's been long but really fun and really, yeah.

• 41:03Sean Hayes?

  I love that.

• 41:03Speaker 03

We went to Venice for two weeks. We shot for two weeks in Venice.

• 41:06Will Arnett?

  I saw that, yeah.

• 41:07Speaker 03

  With Madonna.

• 41:09Sean Hayes?

  In the show?

• 41:09Will Arnett?

  Madonna.

• 41:10Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 41:14Speaker 03

  Hey.

• 41:14Jason Bateman?

Wait, wait, wait, to drop that sound.

• 41:18Will Arnett?

I'm like the Fred Norris of this show.

• 41:20Jason Bateman?

Yeah, hey Fred, pump it, okay?

• 41:22Will Arnett?

Keep it real up in the field, Ike!

• 41:24Jason Bateman?

  That was so ready.

• 41:25Will Arnett?

I'm just doing old, old, I'm just doing.

• 41:27Speaker 03

  I would love to.

• 41:28Will Arnett?

  What are you saying?

• 41:30Speaker 03

  I would love to.

• 41:31Will Arnett?

  I would love to.

• 41:33Speaker 03

  Shut up! Sit down!

• 41:35Will Arnett?

You idiot, don't touch it, you idiot!

• 41:37Speaker 03

I told you not to be stupid, you moron!

• 41:41Jason Bateman?

Wait, so Ike, when you, when you do all...

• 41:45Speaker 03

Sorry Sean, what were you asking?

• 41:46Will Arnett?

Yeah Sean, what were you saying? Sean, did you want to say something?

• 41:48Sean Hayes?

  Go for Sean.

• 41:51Jason Bateman?

Wait, is that on your third button on your phone? So it's always there and ready?

• 41:56Will Arnett?

It's ready to go. It's so fun. I'm having a lot of fun right now. I'm so jacked up on coffee. Ike's here. Ike likes to fuck around.

• 42:04Jason Bateman?

I'm in a urvamate sweat, yeah.

• 42:05Speaker 03

  Oh, man, guys.

• 42:07Jason Bateman?

Okay, so Sean, you had something?

• 42:08Sean Hayes?

So I had a question about how do you balance family?

• 42:11Will Arnett?

Oh, for fuck's sake, dude, are you for real?

• 42:14Speaker 03

  What's your great-

• 42:15Will Arnett?

  Are you fucking real?

• 42:17Speaker 03

  Work, life.

• 42:20Sean Hayes?

Well, because like you said, you're like in Venice and you're doing this. You're doing like 18 shows at the same time and then you, but you have, how many kids you have?

• 42:26Speaker 03

  I have three daughters.

• 42:28Sean Hayes?

  Come on.

• 42:28Will Arnett?

  Wow.

• 42:29Sean Hayes?

  Girl dad.

• 42:29Speaker 03

And I'm not home as much as I like, but my wife's boyfriend is a great guy.

• 42:34Sean Hayes?

  Ike, I'm sorry.

• 42:35Speaker 03

And he, we, it was kind of rocky at first between me and him for obvious reasons.

• 42:39Sean Hayes?

  But now it's gone moderate?

• 42:41Speaker 03

But he's like really good and he's really good with my kids.

• 42:43Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 42:44Speaker 03

And, um, so, yeah, we're just kind of letting that ride.

• 42:48Will Arnett?

Is he still doing the MMA stuff? Is he still into that?

• 42:51Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 42:51Will Arnett?

  The mixed martial arts, yeah.

• 42:52Speaker 03

Well, you guys know Andrew Tate. You've heard of Andrew Tate.

• 42:56Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 42:57Speaker 03

Yeah. Yeah. He's actually not as bad. He's not as bad as people say.

• 43:00Will Arnett?

And how do your daughters get along with his four pit bulls? They're like pretty good or?

• 43:04Speaker 03

Now, yes. Now they have the mouth guards that they can, yeah, the muscles that can't bite now. But, but it was a little touch and go for a minute.

• 43:12Will Arnett?

  Oh my God.

• 43:14Speaker 03

And we will be right back.

• 43:18Will Arnett?

• 46:11Sean Hayes?

  And back to the show.

• 46:14Jason Bateman?

How old are the little angels?

• 46:16Speaker 03

The little angel, hello little angels.

• 46:19Jason Bateman?

  They're listening.

• 46:20Speaker 03

They are eight, 10, and soon to be 13.

• 46:24Jason Bateman?

  Wow.

• 46:24Speaker 03

Right in the, right in the zone.

• 46:26Jason Bateman?

  So nice.

• 46:27Speaker 03

You know, it's fun, it's fun. I watched an interview with Bob Odenkirk and Mike Birbiglia asked him, he's like, "Who are you jealous of?" And he meant like professionally.

• 46:36Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 46:36Speaker 03

And Bob goes, "Oh, anyone that still has little kids at home."

• 46:39Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, I'm with him.

• 46:40Speaker 03

  It's so sweet.

• 46:41Jason Bateman?

I got a 14-year-old still in the house and I'd just like to keep her in a box.

• 46:44Speaker 03

  I know.

• 46:45Jason Bateman?

  Stop it right there.

• 46:47Speaker 03

  And does, and you do.

• 46:48Jason Bateman?

I do, I do. I put little holes in the top of it.

• 46:54Will Arnett?

Yeah, it is true, it is true. It is the best part is, is keeping them young. It's so good.

• 47:00Jason Bateman?

  Don't, Will, don't.

• 47:01Will Arnett?

My guy's about to turn six.

• 47:03Jason Bateman?

  Yeah?

• 47:03Will Arnett?

  Uh, yeah.

• 47:05Jason Bateman?

What are you gonna do for him? Hold on Ike.

• 47:07Will Arnett?

  We're doing a, we're doing a party at a place called...

• 47:10Jason Bateman?

You don't have to say the name of the place, I just wanted to, Ike...

• 47:13Will Arnett?

Well, it's just got, I like it because it's got ninja in the name, but it doesn't matter.

• 47:16Jason Bateman?

Right, you're looking for a break. No, you're looking for a break on the place.

• 47:19Will Arnett?

I wouldn't mind. By the way, they're crushing me on the price for this thing for a couple of kids.

• 47:23Jason Bateman?

You want it on the weekend, right?

• 47:26Jason Bateman?

You do it during the week, you get a real deal.

• 47:28Will Arnett?

  Fucking Brooklyn, Jesus Christ.

• 47:30Jason Bateman?

  Alright, sorry.

• 47:31Will Arnett?

It's gonna be a lot of fun. Anyway, so Ike, so Ike, so you're, the life work, the work-life balance that Charlie is so desperate to know about, it's fine. You, you figure it out, you're working, everybody knows, dad's on the...

• 47:40Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 47:41Will Arnett?

And by the way, like, we, we talk about it all the time, we go, "But everybody has busy..." My dad was an actor, but he was busy a lot. He was off working and he had to, he was like, "I gotta provide for the family," so he's off doing his shit.

• 47:53Jason Bateman?

He's driving down to the Molson and he's checking the, the taps and then he's coming home, you know?

• 48:00Speaker 03

  Still fresh, boys.

• 48:01Jason Bateman?

  He's not flying off somewhere.

• 48:03Will Arnett?

He was, he was on the road a lot, right Sean?

• 48:06Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 48:06Will Arnett?

  You know that?

• 48:07Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, yeah. What's a knickerbocker?

• 48:10Jason Bateman?

Oh, well, this is a, this is an old phrase from New York City.

• 48:14Speaker 03

Sounds like a metropolitan fellow, maybe?

• 48:17Jason Bateman?

Where, I believe it is, yes, Ike, let's go with that. I believe it is a, no, I don't think it's necessarily a dandy man, but, but, uh, um, Will, are you, are you, are you searching it? I'm gonna search it up here.

• 48:29Will Arnett?

  No, I'm not.

• 48:30Jason Bateman?

Let's go to our next question. Hey Siri, what's a knickerbocker?

• 48:36Will Arnett?

Descended of the original Dutch settlers.

• 48:38Jason Bateman?

Or knickers in the United States are a form of baggy knee britches.

• 48:42Will Arnett?

No, it's a person descended from the original Dutch settlers of New York or more broadly a native or resident of New York City.

• 48:48Speaker 03

Do you guys like trivia? Are you guys, are there any of you trivia heads?

• 48:52Jason Bateman?

  No.

• 48:52Speaker 03

  I'm a little bit. I watch Jeopardy.

• 48:54Will Arnett?

So I was gonna mention this, Ike's got a trivia podcast that he's doing now that we're always gonna plug after.

• 48:59Speaker 03

  Oh, for real?

• 49:00Will Arnett?

Yeah, funny, call it funny, you ask.

• 49:02Speaker 03

So Will was gonna do it and he texted me. And he's like, hey man, I can't do it. And I thought it was gonna be like.

• 49:08Will Arnett?

I didn't sound like that on text, by the way, but go ahead.

• 49:10Speaker 03

That's how I read your texts. And I thought it was gonna be like, you know, a work thing came up or a kid thing. And he's like, I can't, Bateman really wants to go golfing.

• 49:19Jason Bateman?

  Oh.

• 49:23Jason Bateman?

  You, how dare you, Will.

• 49:25Will Arnett?

I sold you out. I sold you out. You go, cause Jason, well, it was here, I did tell you this.

• 49:29Speaker 03

Was that that thing a couple of weeks ago?

• 49:31Will Arnett?

It was the last time he played, yeah, it was the last time he was playing before he was leaving town.

• 49:34Speaker 03

Before he was from New York, yes.

• 49:35Will Arnett?

So Bateman says, I'll do it. And so Bateman texts me, well, why don't you just reschedule?

• 49:40Jason Bateman?

I don't sound like that on text.

• 49:42Will Arnett?

Why don't you just reschedule with Ike and do it on a later date and join me on the golf course tomorrow.

• 49:50Jason Bateman?

I don't wanna sound like Paul Lynn.

• 49:53Will Arnett?

That's who it is. That's who you sound like. I've been trying to place it.

• 49:57Speaker 03

  Now, but did he offer?

• 49:58Will Arnett?

I had to be honest, I wanted to be honest with Ike.

• 50:01Speaker 03

And I truly appreciate that. Because if he would have been like, uh, it's, I have a work thing and then I went golfing and saw him there, I'd be crushed.

• 50:07Jason Bateman?

Did you offer him a rescheduling date, Will?

• 50:09Speaker 03

  He did.

• 50:10Will Arnett?

I did. I did. And I'm here and I'm waiting, he's out of town and I'm waiting for him to get back and I'm gonna do it.

• 50:14Speaker 03

We're actually gonna do it right after we finish this pod.

• 50:16Will Arnett?

  Yeah, we're gonna do it.

• 50:17Jason Bateman?

Wait, you got some questions, Ike?

• 50:19Speaker 03

I do have some questions for you guys. I started a trivia podcast, cause I love trivia, right? Like I'm obsessed with trivia. I've, I've, I've gone on.

• 50:26Jason Bateman?

  Have you been on Jeopardy?

• 50:27Speaker 03

I won Celebrity Jeopardy, Mr. Bateman.

• 50:29Jason Bateman?

Wait, whoa, wow. I didn't know that.

• 50:31Speaker 03

  Celebrity Jeopardy.

• 50:32Will Arnett?

He's one who wants to be a millionaire.

• 50:34Jason Bateman?

  Whoa.

• 50:35Speaker 03

I won Celebrity Wants to be a Millionaire.

• 50:37Jason Bateman?

What's the game in the bars?

• 50:40Speaker 03

  In the bars?

• 50:41Jason Bateman?

  Is, is there a game?

• 50:41Speaker 03

  Pub trivia?

• 50:42Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 50:43Speaker 03

Yeah, I've done that before. That's very fun. That's very fun. But I wanna do a podcast where I interview friends of mine who are like funny or cool and then ask them trivia questions about subjects that they kind of know.

• 50:53Jason Bateman?

I'd love to read for it.

• 50:54Speaker 03

Uh, you, you, well, you're, uh, we, we are out to your people, I'm sure. Do you guys want a couple of questions? I wrote, I wrote some questions for you.

• 51:00Will Arnett?

  Obviously, obviously.

• 51:01Speaker 03

Okay, let's go, let's go. You can just call out the answer if you know it, okay?

• 51:04Jason Bateman?

  There's no buzzer?

• 51:05Speaker 03

Nope, uh, just say your name for the buzzer.

• 51:07Jason Bateman?

  Okay.

• 51:08Speaker 03

Uh, okay, uh, ba, ba, ba, when, uh, the Battle of the Hastings, this was... What do you got?

• 51:14Jason Bateman?

  Sorry.

• 51:14Sean Hayes?

  1940.

• 51:16Speaker 03

The Battle of the Hastings, this, uh, Norman King was the conqueror.

• 51:21Will Arnett?

  William the Conqueror.

• 51:22Speaker 03

Okay, I blew that question, ready? Here we go. This American car company...

• 51:26Will Arnett?

  By the way, 1066.

• 51:27Speaker 03

Yes, 1066. This American car company ceased production in 2004.

• 51:32Jason Bateman?

  This American what?

• 51:33Speaker 03

But was part of... This American car company ceased production in 2004, but was part of GM.

• 51:40Will Arnett?

Yeah, I know what it is.

• 51:41Jason Bateman?

  Uh, Jason, Oldsmobile.

• 51:42Speaker 03

Yes, Jason Bateman's on the board.

• 51:44Sean Hayes?

Wow, how do you know that?

• 51:45Speaker 03

  Ah, that's right.

• 52:12Speaker 03

Looking for Chico, Gummo, or Zeppo.

• 52:28Speaker 03

Yes. Uh, who was the 10th US president?

• 52:32Sean Hayes?

  Oh, God.

• 52:33Jason Bateman?

  Jason!

• 52:34Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 52:34Jason Bateman?

  Lincoln.

• 52:35Will Arnett?

  McKinley.

• 52:36Speaker 03

No. John Tyler. This actress has won more Emmys than any other actor.

• 52:41Jason Bateman?

  Jason!

• 52:42Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 52:45Sean Hayes?

  Is it Julie Louis-Dreyfus?

• 52:46Speaker 03

  It is Julie Louis-Dreyfus.

• 52:48Sean Hayes?

  Damn it.

• 52:48Speaker 03

Isaac Newton, Charles Dickens, and Oliver Cromwell are buried in what London landmark?

• 52:53Jason Bateman?

Jason, it is the big church, the big cathedral, the big, um...

• 52:58Will Arnett?

  Westminster Abbey.

• 52:59Jason Bateman?

  That's it.

• 53:00Speaker 03

Uh, two more. This man is the NHL's all-time leading scorer. Sean.

• 53:05Will Arnett?

  Wayne Gretzky.

• 53:05Jason Bateman?

  Jason, Wayne Gretzky.

• 53:06Will Arnett?

  Wayne Gretzky.

• 53:07Speaker 03

  No, it's Ovechkin.

• 53:08Will Arnett?

Well, no, scorer, no scorer of goals. Score, I was including points.

• 53:12Speaker 03

  Oh, okay, okay.

• 53:14Will Arnett?

I knew it was Ovechkin most goals, sorry.

• 53:16Speaker 03

Last one. Infant insects are called nymphs or?

• 53:20Jason Bateman?

  Small bugs. Jason.

• 53:28Sean Hayes?

Infant insects are called nymphs or larvae? I don't know.

• 53:32Jason Bateman?

Larvae is correct. Nice job, guys. You guys got the majority of those right.

• 53:37Will Arnett?

God, that's so cool that three of us could get 20% of them right.

• 53:42Sean Hayes?

  Welcome to Smartless.

• 53:43Will Arnett?

  Yeah, oh shit.

• 53:47Jason Bateman?

Well, what's the name of that, what's the name of that podcast there?

• 53:50Speaker 03

That podcast, Jason, thank you for asking, is called Funny You Ask.

• 53:53Sean Hayes?

  Funny You Ask, yeah.

• 53:54Jason Bateman?

  That seems like a tune-in.

• 53:56Will Arnett?

And you just had our friend, you just had our mutual friend Adam Pally on there, who hosts a podcast for us.

• 54:02Speaker 03

Which I love with him and Gabris.

• 54:03Jason Bateman?

Yeah. What's that one called? Crossplug?

• 54:05Sean Hayes?

  Staying Alive.

• 54:06Will Arnett?

Staying Alive. And it's a Smartless Media podcast. Check it wherever you get your podcasts with Gabris and Adam Pally. Adam Pally is so fucking funny.

• 54:14Sean Hayes?

He is one of the funniest dudes.

• 54:15Will Arnett?

He is, he is, he is so fucking funny, that dude, isn't he?

• 54:20Speaker 03

He said, I was asking him, what would you give, what would you do if the Knicks could win the championship? And I named a bunch of things, like, would you change your middle name to Stalin? He was like, yes.

• 54:30Will Arnett?

  Yes.

• 54:30Speaker 03

I was like, would you, uh, every time you turn on the TV for the rest of your life, it's only Kill Tony? He's like, yes. The one thing he said he wouldn't do is give up chicken parm.

• 54:41Will Arnett?

  Yeah, I saw that.

• 54:43Speaker 03

I can't give up chicken parm. I'm sorry, I excuse that.

• 54:46Jason Bateman?

Now, do you have a co-host on your, on your show?

• 54:49Speaker 03

No, it's all me, man. It's solo.

• 54:50Jason Bateman?

  Wow. It's once a week?

• 54:52Speaker 03

It's once a week, and I write all the questions for my guests. It's one hour.

• 54:56Will Arnett?

You do all your own questions?

• 54:58Speaker 03

I write the questions for the guests and I really love doing that. It's like, it's a fun way to kind of like get into their head a little bit. And then my producer, Annabelle, writes the questions that the guest asks me because I also want to do a podcast where I answer questions as well.

• 55:12Will Arnett?

But that's still like a lot of work that you're doing.

• 55:14Speaker 03

  A lot of work.

• 55:15Will Arnett?

Considering all the shit that you're doing.

• 55:16Speaker 03

  Yeah, that's, yeah.

• 55:17Will Arnett?

You're, you're writing Running Point, you're, you're EPing that show, you're doing the studio, you're doing this podcast, you're running around doing all this, like, how the fuck?

• 55:25Jason Bateman?

You got an Adderall addiction, Ike?

• 55:27Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 55:27Sean Hayes?

I have a minor speed addiction that we're trying to kick right now.

• 55:30Jason Bateman?

  Good for you.

• 55:31Sean Hayes?

  Cut this.

• 55:31Will Arnett?

Let's cut this, guys, can I get a number?

• 55:35Sean Hayes?

Ike, with the podcast and the movies and the being a father and everything else, when do you slow down? What do you do to slow down?

• 55:42Will Arnett?

  Yoga, yoga.

• 55:43Speaker 03

Um, I, I, when Jason was saying I like to watch TV, that's like my favorite thing to do is like at the end of the day is to watch like an hour and a half of television.

• 55:51Jason Bateman?

Is it reality TV? Something dumb?

• 55:54Speaker 03

The only, no, the reality TV, not too much. We, we just finished Beef, season two.

• 55:59Jason Bateman?

  Sure.

• 55:59Speaker 03

I like watching good TV shows as much as I like to come back.

• 56:03Jason Bateman?

You'll climb in and, and the we is, is that the girlfriend or the, or the wife?

• 56:06Speaker 03

The, the, that's the wife. The girlfriend does not like TV. The girlfriend wants to go out to nightclubs.

• 56:12Will Arnett?

Yeah, she wants to take her to nightclubs, she likes bottle service.

• 56:17Speaker 03

She actually is, works at the club and does the bottle service.

• 56:19Will Arnett?

Of course, that makes a lot of sense.

• 56:21Speaker 03

I don't know if you guys had this with your wife where my wife does want to go to bed like earlier and earlier. She works a lot. And so there's some nights where it's like 8:52 and she's like, should we just go to bed? And it's like this, it's like a push and pull. We're like, no, we have to watch like 46 minutes of a TV show right now.

• 56:36Jason Bateman?

But what about, why can't, but you're, you're not watching the TV shows in bed?

• 56:40Speaker 03

We don't, we did not put a TV in our bed.

• 56:43Will Arnett?

That's smart, it's terrible for your sleep.

• 56:45Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 56:45Jason Bateman?

Boy, you guys both keeping the sex alive by not having a TV in there?

• 56:49Speaker 03

  This is bullshit.

• 56:50Will Arnett?

Uh, but so you're watching, by the way, that Beef season two, I, can I just shout out obviously Chuck Hernan, but Carey Mulligan.

• 56:57Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 56:58Will Arnett?

  The great Carey Mulligan.

• 56:59Jason Bateman?

  The great Carey Mulligan.

• 57:00Will Arnett?

Carey Mulligan is the most underrated actor of our generation.

• 57:06Speaker 03

She's really good. And Carey's great.

• 57:08Will Arnett?

  I fucking love her.

• 57:10Jason Bateman?

I will say, though, that always sounds like a back, like, that always sounds like a backhanded compliment. I will say, to those who, who know what they're talking about, she is not underrated. They're talking plenty about her.

• 57:19Will Arnett?

I know, I just mean, I just mean, I just mean, she should be lauded. There should just be

• 57:23Jason Bateman?

  Yes.

• 57:23Will Arnett?

permanent billboards of her not even promoting a movie just because she's

• 57:27Jason Bateman?

  I agree with you.

• 57:28Will Arnett?

  I, I, I can't

• 57:29Jason Bateman?

You should take, you should buy some, take them out.

• 57:31Will Arnett?

  I will.

• 57:31Speaker 03

I'm a fan of Carey Mulligan.

• 57:32Will Arnett?

I don't know if Marcus will, her husband will love it. He might think that, you know what I mean? It's a little much. Anyway.

• 57:39Jason Bateman?

Hey, yeah, we are at hour one.

• 57:41Will Arnett?

I know we're at hour, but I just

• 57:42Jason Bateman?

Let's get to our first question.

• 57:44Will Arnett?

I love, I love fucking Ike. I just love hanging out with Mike. I was so excited. I said to Sean before, we were FaceTiming before, you know, the core part of Smart List were FaceTiming before, just Sean and me. And we were, and I was saying, he was saying, is your guest good? I said, oh, our guest is so good. We just want to hang out and laugh and we'll do, like, that's, that's

• 58:02Jason Bateman?

That's exactly right. Do you have any questions, Will?

• 58:05Will Arnett?

  No, fuck no, I do.

• 58:06Jason Bateman?

  You don't, do you?

• 58:07Will Arnett?

I had a bunch. Like, what's a note that you've gotten as an actor or writer that really changed how you approach your work? You've collaborated with a lot of comedic voices. What do you think makes a collaboration? Who fucking cares?

• 58:18Jason Bateman?

Who cares? This is the hang, this is it. This is the show.

• 58:21Will Arnett?

  Did you J O today?

• 58:25Jason Bateman?

I'm, let's just say I'm in a hotel room by myself. Not said.

• 58:31Will Arnett?

Ike, when did, first of all, when does season three of Studio come out? Cause I can't wait.

• 58:35Jason Bateman?

That's, that's gonna come out next March, I believe.

• 58:37Will Arnett?

  Fuck off.

• 58:38Speaker 03

March 2027? Wow. Takes them that long to cut it together?

• 58:41Will Arnett?

Fucking, what's up with Rogan and fucking Evan? What are they doing?

• 58:45Speaker 03

  Man, they're smoking doobies, man.

• 58:47Will Arnett?

I know, they're smoking doobies. I bought one of, I told, I bought one of Seth's, um, his standing asterisks. No, I bought two of them. And I sent him a pic and I said, hey, I'm supporting the cause.

• 58:58Jason Bateman?

As an investor, I say thank you.

• 59:00Will Arnett?

  Oh, no shit.

• 59:01Speaker 03

  Yeah, a little bit.

• 59:02Will Arnett?

Fucking, you guys wanna cut me a deal? I fucking paid retail on the fucking website, dude.

• 59:07Speaker 03

I only invest in my friends' companies. We have no money in the market, no mutual funds, no Roth IRA. I just invest in my friends' small businesses.

• 59:14Will Arnett?

  That is so...

• 59:15Jason Bateman?

What's your email? I'm gonna send you a prospectus on something.

• 59:18Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 59:19Speaker 03

It's an old email. It's dumbassike@AOL. I gotta change it for myriad reasons.

• 59:27Jason Bateman?

  You're four minutes over, Will.

• 59:28Will Arnett?

I know, I know. I just wanna say, Ike, I love having you. I love that you... I love that the rest of the world appreciates what a fucking great, funny dude you are increasingly. And I've loved watching the success you've had with the studio. I'm just fucking always rooting for you as you reach these crazy heights. And everybody, when the studio came out...

• 59:49Jason Bateman?

You said it earlier. I light up every time I see you.

• 59:51Will Arnett?

100%. You always have a great vibe. And then now you've taken to the next level. And like, everybody's like, have you... People are like, have you seen Ike Baranho's on the fucking studio? He's so fucking funny. You're so fucking good.

• 1:00:03Jason Bateman?

And aside from all that, you get hired over and over because you're normal and easy and kind and a good person. You are.

• 1:00:10Speaker 03

  Talented.

• 1:00:10Jason Bateman?

You are. Aside from all the talent.

• 1:00:12Will Arnett?

It is true. If you're listening out there, to our listener...

• 1:00:16Jason Bateman?

  And you've got a script.

• 1:00:18Will Arnett?

Ike, if you've got a script, Ike is the guy to send it to.

• 1:00:21Jason Bateman?

Give him the email one more time?

• 1:00:23Will Arnett?

He'll put his name on it.

• 1:00:24Speaker 03

Dumbass like an AOL. I might not be the best actor or the funniest actor, but I'm on time. And I'm respectful.

• 1:00:30Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:30Speaker 03

And that is all that matters.

• 1:00:32Will Arnett?

You are truly, for our listener, I will say truly, you're one of the fucking great, good dudes out there. And I really mean that.

• 1:00:39Speaker 03

This is a yes. This is a bucket list thing for me, guys.

• 1:00:42Will Arnett?

Talk about it, performer. What a guy.

• 1:00:45Jason Bateman?

  This guy. Take another bow.

• 1:00:49Will Arnett?

  Ike Baranho's.

• 1:00:51Jason Bateman?

The one and only. Thank you, Ike, for joining us, my friend.

• 1:00:55Will Arnett?

Give our love to everybody over there on your cast that you guys are doing the BAFTAs with. Tell them we say hi. We love you guys and love you.

• 1:01:03Speaker 03

  Amazing. Love you, guys.

• 1:01:04Jason Bateman?

  Hurry home. Thanks, Ike.

• 1:01:05Speaker 03

  Bye, everybody.

• 1:01:06Jason Bateman?

  Bye.

• 1:01:06Will Arnett?

  Bye, Ike.

• 1:01:09Will Arnett?

I love that dude. I love that dude.

• 1:01:11Jason Bateman?

That's one of those fellas that I have not yet worked with and I'm not happy about it. You know, and you know who else like, you know, like Seth, Evan, Judd Apatow. Like, I've never been, never been included in that group, ever. No one's ever, you know, said, "Hey, why don't you come on over and play a little bit."

• 1:01:30Will Arnett?

Now stop. Now stop for a second. Take a beat. And let's look at, let's look at ourselves, Jason. Let's look at ourselves for a second.

• 1:01:36Jason Bateman?

  What's my part in it?

• 1:01:37Will Arnett?

What is your role in it?

• 1:01:38Jason Bateman?

What is my part in it? Hang on, let me get a mirror. Let me get a mirror.

• 1:01:43Will Arnett?

Don't get one of those true mirrors. Don't get one of those true mirrors.

• 1:01:46Jason Bateman?

  What's a true mirror?

• 1:01:47Will Arnett?

Have you ever seen those where you, it's not even just a reflection, like it kind of sees like what the world sees of you?

• 1:01:52Jason Bateman?

  It's just inverted.

• 1:01:53Will Arnett?

  It's inverted. It's scary AF.

• 1:01:56Jason Bateman?

Wait, really? It's different? That you just, your face is flipped the other way around?

• 1:02:00Will Arnett?

Yeah, you look, yes. Have you've never done it?

• 1:02:02Jason Bateman?

I think the iPhone, if you reverse the camera, is, that's the way people see you. I don't know. No, you just see the room you're in.

• 1:02:10Will Arnett?

  I don't know.

• 1:02:11Jason Bateman?

Yeah, but I mean, that's the perspective of, of people looking at you.

• 1:02:14Will Arnett?

Oh, you're in luck. MIT just called. They have an opening.

• 1:02:18Jason Bateman?

Like what I'm looking at right now on this Zoom, I'm assuming that is the perspective that you would have if you were sitting across from me. Right? Because the camera's in front of me. Yeah, yeah. I guess so, yeah. I'm not sure. Can we get Tyson, Neil Duhigg Tyson on the blower, please?

• 1:02:34Will Arnett?

  This is so depressing.

• 1:02:37Jason Bateman?

Wait, Sean's got, here he comes. I just can see his eyes.

• 1:02:40Will Arnett?

Oh, here it is. Scotty just DM'd him.

• 1:02:43Jason Bateman?

Just DM'd him a little bye. No, no, let me see.

• 1:02:46Will Arnett?

Oh, okay. I'm looking up something else. It has nothing to do with...

• 1:02:50Jason Bateman?

Scrolling, scrolling. Do you remember the, um...

• 1:02:52Will Arnett?

Oh, hey, do you guys, hey, this is a weird thing I was just thinking about.

• 1:03:00Jason Bateman?

Do you remember that Beatles song or Paul McCartney song where he's singing about a bird or something? Oh, oh.

• 1:03:07Will Arnett?

  Wait a second.

• 1:03:07Jason Bateman?

  Blackbird?

• 1:03:09Will Arnett?

Yeah, it was good. Talking about it, talking about it out of left fucking field.

• 1:03:12Jason Bateman?

Yeah. That's Wrigley Field. That's Wrigley Field. And when, and when this, and when the, when the, when the ball goes out of Wrigley Field, Sure. You say what to it? You say, "Bye bye ball. Bye bye blackbird. Hey, you guys, where did you go?" Blackbird, bye. Hey, bye.
