Rene Vaca Didn’t Expect This Kind of Attention | Whiskey Ginger

Welcome to Whiskey Ginger a Wave series presented by Fanduel. Andrew Santino sits down with comedian Rene Vaca to talk about coming up fast in comedy, navigating the internet spotlight, and what it actually takes to turn viral attention into real stand-up chops. Rene gets into the pressure of being “next up,” learning on the fly, and why the stage will always humble you no matter how many views you rack up online. They get into bombing, confidence, the weird expectations that come with early success, and why staying sharp matters more than chasing hype. It’s honest, funny, and exactly what you want from a young comic figuring it out in real time. In here, we pour whiskey, whiskey, whiskey, whiskey, whiskey.

• 0:41Speaker 02

Who's that creature in the ginger beard?

• 0:44Speaker 03

It's dirty and ginger. Like vampires, the ginger gene is a curse. Gingers are beautiful. You owe me $5 for the whiskey and $75 for the horse. Gingers, oh hell no. This whiskey is excellent. Ginger. I like gingers.

• 1:01Andrew Santino?

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to Whiskey Ginger. Our guest today is one of my favorite people on earth. I say that for all my guests, but I mean him once again today. It's Rene Vaca. Or should I say Rene Vaca, man?

• 1:10Speaker 04

  Rene Vaca, man.

• 1:11Andrew Santino?

What are you doing? Everybody thinks you're Indian, man. You do give a little bit of Indian vibe, I'm not gonna lie.

• 1:18Speaker 04

  Funny finger.

• 1:19Andrew Santino?

Rene Vaca, man. Because they point to God. God bless God, man. Everyone on the internet does think you're Indian for a hot minute.

• 1:26Speaker 04

Dude, everybody, bro. At one point, I really thought I was Indian, man. And I need to do that 23 and me shit, bro. It's getting ridiculous out here, man.

• 1:34Andrew Santino?

No, you're a Mexican kid from LA.

• 1:36Speaker 04

Dude, when I was, when I first started going viral, people were commenting, Indians were commenting on myself, "I don't care what Mexicans say, we own him."

• 1:45Andrew Santino?

He is ours for the taking.

• 1:46Speaker 04

  He is ours.

• 1:47Andrew Santino?

No one will, you could compete with, it'd be you and Russell Peters going head to head to sell out more arenas in India. Have you played over there?

• 1:54Speaker 04

  No.

• 1:54Andrew Santino?

  You gotta go over there.

• 1:55Speaker 04

  I'm so scared.

• 1:57Andrew Santino?

  Why? Go over there.

• 1:58Speaker 04

  People say it's dangerous.

• 2:01Andrew Santino?

India? Is India dangerous? Google that, there's no way. Come on, really?

• 2:05Speaker 04

We have a high rape percentage out there.

• 2:08Andrew Santino?

No one's catching you like that, brother, you're good.

• 2:10Speaker 04

But for women, not for men.

• 2:12Andrew Santino?

Yeah, you stay strapped in that bag. What's in there, little 22?

• 2:14Speaker 04

No, hell no, dude, just a mess in there. My passport's in there.

• 2:18Andrew Santino?

All right, well cheers. You're on the road, you're on the move.

• 2:21Speaker 04

  Cheers, brother.

• 2:22Andrew Santino?

Cheers, my man. Thank you for coming, I appreciate you having.

• 2:24Speaker 04

  Thank you for having me.

• 2:26Andrew Santino?

  A little sip. Tastes good.

• 2:28Speaker 04

  That's nice.

• 2:29Andrew Santino?

You and I are about to play Vegas. This will be out after we're already gone, but we're about to play Vegas this weekend. You're going early. I'm playing the win.

• 2:36Speaker 04

  Oh, that's nice.

• 2:37Andrew Santino?

I play the win all the time because I'm a white guy. I play golf.

• 2:39Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 2:40Andrew Santino?

I love golf. Golf is out the back door.

• 2:41Speaker 04

Do you have a Topgolf there?

• 2:43Andrew Santino?

No, no. Well, there is a Topgolf in Vegas. But out the back of the win, like literally, if you walk outside the back door, there's a golf course right there. That's why I like it. That's my, that's my, I'm in my early 40s white guy.

• 2:55Speaker 04

See, it's like, it's like every year I do Hawaii. I do the Blue Note.

• 2:58Andrew Santino?

The Blue Note, yeah. I've never done it.

• 3:00Speaker 04

  It's just to, I mean, it's not a big venue. It's like 300 or 400.

• 3:02Andrew Santino?

  It's for vacation.

• 3:03Speaker 04

Yeah, just to go out there for two, three days.

• 3:05Andrew Santino?

  You like Hawaiian girls?

• 3:07Speaker 04

I just like Hawaii, man. Just, is there Hawaii? I mean...

• 3:10Andrew Santino?

  Hawaiian girls? Beautiful.

• 3:12Speaker 04

Every time I go there, they're just white and...

• 3:15Andrew Santino?

Well, you're probably at the resorts and shit. A lot of tourists where you are.

• 3:18Speaker 04

  A bunch of tourists around.

• 3:19Andrew Santino?

You gotta go off the beaten path.

• 3:19Speaker 04

And a bunch of people that move there from, from over here and just like...

• 3:24Andrew Santino?

It's a lot of California people, yeah. Yeah, but you gotta go off the beaten path. Go where the locals go. Go get some local fish.

• 3:30Speaker 04

  They're big, aren't they?

• 3:31Andrew Santino?

  The girls?

• 3:38Andrew Santino?

Bro. We were talking before we started the show a little bit about, um, about your chain and about your, your boy that you brought out here and then...

• 3:45Speaker 04

Yeah, rest in peace, Ken Flores.

• 3:46Andrew Santino?

And then we were talking about Ken Flores, a phenomenal comedian who still, uh, to this day is, uh, very present online. People still circulate his clips, which is...

• 3:55Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 3:56Andrew Santino?

He was, he was about to explode, I think, into the atmosphere.

• 3:58Speaker 04

Yeah, uh, so crazy story here. Uh, the day before,

• 4:05Speaker 04

the day before he passed, we had just gotten a call, um, from our agent saying that the tour is gonna happen. Me, Robert Bosson, Ken Flores, the three beaners.

• 4:17Andrew Santino?

That was the name of the tour.

• 4:19Speaker 04

No, it was the name of the tour.

• 4:20Andrew Santino?

  Trespinarios!

• 4:24Speaker 04

So it was it was like life changing, we were gonna make um our first time making seven figures all together, you know.

• 4:31Andrew Santino?

  Wow.

• 4:32Speaker 04

And it was like you know, the and he I remember like it was like damn, this is gonna change our life and the next day I was gonna call him to be like, bro, are we excited, are you excited? And he wouldn't answer. And that was the day he passed.

• 4:45Andrew Santino?

God. He did he die here in LA?

• 4:47Speaker 04

  Uh, yeah.

• 4:48Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 4:49Speaker 04

Sherman Oaks, man. Uh, we both got our apartments near each other at the time.

• 4:54Andrew Santino?

Cause you guys started together, yeah?

• 4:55Speaker 04

Yeah, he was in Chicago. Um, he opened for me and uh yeah, I just saw how funny he was and like, I was like, dude, and we just clicked. It wasn't even like that he was funny, it was like, I wanna be around this guy.

• 5:08Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 5:09Speaker 04

You know, and uh I was like, come with me to Detroit, and then we went to uh do a show there and from there, I was just like, bro, let's just keep going, bro, like like, what are you doing in Chicago? And he's like, I gotta work. I was like, bro, fuck that, bro, let's go. Uh, let's go do a weekend at the Haha.

• 5:25Andrew Santino?

  Here in LA?

• 5:26Speaker 04

Yeah, cause shout out to Terry, man, that's like my, that's where I started, at the Haha. And I was just like, bro, they'll give us any day we want. And like, we'll run the whole weekend, me and you. Have you been in LA? Like, no, I haven't performed in LA yet. I'm like bro, they love you right now. He was already popping online, so I was like, bro, they love you, they want you, like, let's go. We sold out, I don't know how many shows. And I gave him a fucking, we split the we split the check, I went to go get a cash. Went to go split it, gave him a fucking fat wad of cash, and I was like, here you go, bro.

• 5:54Andrew Santino?

  Move to LA.

• 5:55Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 5:56Andrew Santino?

  That's great, man.

• 5:57Speaker 04

Come to LA, brother. And then uh, once he came here, it was it's over, bro. CA wanted him really bad. Uh, all the management companies wanted him. Every comedian that saw him live was like, who the fuck is this guy?

• 6:09Andrew Santino?

Well, it's so funny because it was like, you guys kind of all started this re-revolution.

• 6:15Andrew Santino?

Of Mexican comedians because there, you know, there have been little pops of people that have come and gone. And there's a lot of internal beef within. I don't know what it is about you guys, man. White guys don't like each other, but you guys really don't like each other, man. But you guys were the first young crew of guys who was kind of holding each other up instead of pushing each other down, which I thought was great, man.

• 6:31Speaker 04

Yeah, before it was like, you know, the George Lopez's, the Fluffies and the...

• 6:35Andrew Santino?

Yeah, and Paul Rodriguez. It was like all these guys that kind of like, they made it in their own terms at their own time and the industry was different back then, but...

• 6:42Speaker 04

And there can only be one, right?

• 6:44Andrew Santino?

Right. You guys were the first crew of young Mexican kids that were like, you know, we'll all do it together. And that was really cool to see. I mean, it's still happening now, but it is, it was kind of nice to watch online. Finally, I was like, oh, this is, this is what comedy groups, you know, like you, you talk about kings of comedy and all that stuff. That's how all those guys started. They all bonded because they popped at like the same time. So all those guys were like, we're all gonna go do it.

• 7:07Speaker 04

Yeah, that's what, that's exactly what Ralph and I were talking about and just like, you know, uh, it was, it was just cool to see because you can tell the world needed it.

• 7:17Andrew Santino?

  Oh, yeah.

• 7:17Speaker 04

At least, at least the Latino part of the world, they needed it. And you can tell by the way, by the people coming out to the shows. A lot of these people have never been to a comedy show.

• 7:26Andrew Santino?

  Right.

• 7:27Speaker 04

A lot of these people have never, they don't like anybody else.

• 7:29Andrew Santino?

  Right.

• 7:30Speaker 04

They're just like, we're just here for you, bro.

• 7:32Andrew Santino?

  It's just for you, dawg.

• 7:33Speaker 04

  It's for you, dawg.

• 7:33Andrew Santino?

Fucking don't even like comedy, homie.

• 7:35Speaker 04

  Fucking hate comedians, bro.

• 7:38Andrew Santino?

You know, I like the Indian one is the best, dawg.

• 7:42Andrew Santino?

That little Punjabi guy is good, dude.

• 7:43Speaker 04

Hey, hey, hey, rest in peace to your homie Kevin, bro. Kevin. Yeah, he was good, bro. Kevin, Kevin died?

• 7:49Andrew Santino?

Kevin died? Our manager? Little white Kevin? Kevin's dead?

• 7:56Andrew Santino?

So what's the deal now in your career? Now you're, you're cruising around and you're, are you gonna, you did Netflix already, right? You did that Netflix up.

• 8:03Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 8:04Andrew Santino?

And then what are you gonna put out a special now?

• 8:05Speaker 04

Yeah, we're putting a special out, hopefully on Netflix.

• 8:08Andrew Santino?

It should be, if they know better.

• 8:10Speaker 04

Well, Netflix, uh, Netflix, you know, they, they told me what to do.

• 8:14Andrew Santino?

What do you mean? They, they let you know what they wanted?

• 8:16Speaker 04

Yeah. So now I'm just here like, should I do?

• 8:21Andrew Santino?

I mean, here it's interesting, right? It's like, uh, Netflix is like, it's like the hot girl at the party where you're, everybody wants her. And she's like, here's what you gotta do to, to lay me down. And you either gotta play the game.

• 8:32Speaker 04

And I'm only gonna pee as much.

• 8:33Andrew Santino?

  Or you gotta go...

• 8:33Speaker 04

  A what?

• 8:34Andrew Santino?

Right, right, right. Either gotta, either gotta do what she wants, or you gotta go get the fat chick and, and have more fun, but, you know, you wanna be with the hot chick or the fat chick?

• 8:44Speaker 04

  Who's the fat chick YouTube?

• 8:45Andrew Santino?

Yeah, cuz it's a fat chick. Fat chick, fat chick.

• 8:50Speaker 04

No, I mean, I mean, obviously, you know.

• 8:52Andrew Santino?

And shout out to big girls, by the way. We are not making fun of you. My god, the internet gets sensitive.

• 8:57Speaker 04

Shout out to the big girls, man. BBWs, bro. You guys.

• 9:00Andrew Santino?

Did you date BBW ever? Did you have that?

• 9:02Speaker 04

There was a moment in my life where that's the only porn I would watch.

• 9:07Andrew Santino?

  Really?

• 9:08Speaker 04

I think I was like sixteen, fifteen, fifteen, sixteen years old. Nah, I was fucking twelve. I was twelve years old, man. I was just like, BBWs are nice.

• 9:18Andrew Santino?

  I love, dude.

• 9:18Speaker 04

And then, you get older, you're like, ooh, I don't think I wanna BBW.

• 9:22Andrew Santino?

No, I do. In college, I was all about it. In colleges, in college, at one point, I wanted girls that were taller and thicker than me. I wanted girls that were taller.

• 9:30Speaker 04

  You wanted the volleyball players?

• 9:32Andrew Santino?

I want, yeah, big girl, yeah. I loved it. I was obsessed. I hung out with a big girl at University of Colorado in Boulder. And she was like a pro athlete. She was, bro.

• 9:42Speaker 04

Just imagine putting those legs up.

• 9:43Andrew Santino?

Well, no, I jumped in her arms. She carried me through the hallway. I loved it, dude. I was all about it. But no, you're gonna maybe do what they want you to do, and it's a good move, if, you know, put your stuff back on Netflix.

• 9:53Speaker 04

I mean, I'm gonna do it. My agents and my manager are very, making sure of that. Now, Renee, you've gotta do what they want you to do. Be a good boy.

• 10:04Speaker 04

It was my agent's birthday yesterday. Shout out to my agent.

• 10:08Andrew Santino?

You don't even know his name.

• 10:09Speaker 04

Fidel. Shout out to my agent.

• 10:10Andrew Santino?

  Castro? Fidel Castro's your agent?

• 10:11Speaker 04

  Fidel Barrajas, man.

• 10:13Andrew Santino?

  Barrajas.

• 10:13Speaker 04

Yeah, it was his birthday yesterday. I fucking was drunk and I doordashed him, um, orchids from, uh, Gelson's and McDonald's.

• 10:23Speaker 04

  I'm serious, look.

• 10:24Andrew Santino?

You doordashed him orchids and McDonald's?

• 10:26Speaker 04

  Yeah, look.

• 10:27Andrew Santino?

It's a brilliant combination. What was the order for McDonald's?

• 10:30Speaker 04

Uh, Big Mac with extra cheese and a kid's meal, cuz it had a toy.

• 10:36Andrew Santino?

That is beautiful, actually. That's very nice of you.

• 10:38Speaker 04

  Right?

• 10:39Andrew Santino?

That is very sweet. Got the pink orchids.

• 10:40Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 10:41Andrew Santino?

  It's very nice.

• 10:42Speaker 04

  Fucking beautiful, man.

• 10:43Andrew Santino?

You gotta send me that photo. We'll have to show the audience at home.

• 10:44Speaker 04

  Yeah, I got you, bro.

• 10:45Andrew Santino?

No, you know what? Uh, thoughtful. You seem like a thoughtful dude. I don't even know you well enough to know you, but I seem, you seem like a really good dude in your heart.

• 10:51Speaker 04

  Yeah, man, yeah.

• 10:52Andrew Santino?

  You're funny, but you're thoughtful.

• 10:53Speaker 04

I pay a lot of my family's rents and they-

• 10:55Andrew Santino?

  You do?

• 10:56Speaker 04

They need to fucking step it up, right? You guys, uh, Renee Baca can't be paying your rents forever. I know I'm the first in my family to make money, but you guys need to step it up, bro. My accountant-

• 11:06Andrew Santino?

  Step it up.

• 11:07Speaker 04

  My accountant said so.

• 11:08Andrew Santino?

Your accountant called you and was like, "You can't, you can't pay your cousin's rent."

• 11:11Speaker 04

Can't keep paying these people's rents, bro.

• 11:13Andrew Santino?

But you know what? You're the first one. You're the, you're leading the charge.

• 11:16Speaker 04

  You gotta lead the charge.

• 11:17Andrew Santino?

You're from, you're from the valley. Aren't you a valley boy?

• 11:19Speaker 04

  Uh, 818, man. Van Nuys.

• 11:20Andrew Santino?

  818 till we die.

• 11:21Speaker 04

Van Nuys. You're a valley boy?

• 11:22Andrew Santino?

Well, I'm not from here, but I've been living here for a long time.

• 11:24Speaker 04

Yeah, I love the valley, but I don't understand the whole hype. I don't understand the hype down the freeway over there, bro. I don't, fucking, you ever gone to like LA, LA, like downtown? Like, it's disgusting. It's crowded. Traffic, oh my god.

• 11:37Andrew Santino?

No, I like the valley. I stay in the burbs.

• 11:39Speaker 04

  Mexicans-

• 11:40Andrew Santino?

  I like it out here.

• 11:40Speaker 04

  Blacks out there are scary.

• 11:45Speaker 01

• 14:12Andrew Santino?

Yeah, but back in the day when you were a kid, right? You're not that old, but even when you were a kid, the valley was really tough at one point. Especially up north, that was really tough.

• 14:20Speaker 04

Yeah, I mean, I grew up around the gang life, I guess. You know, my dad, my uncles and friends.

• 14:28Andrew Santino?

  You show everyone you know?

• 14:30Speaker 04

  My mom, my grandma.

• 14:32Andrew Santino?

My mom was a leader, my grandma was a leader.

• 14:34Speaker 04

No, my grandma did sell cocaine on the block.

• 14:37Andrew Santino?

  Did she?

• 14:37Speaker 04

Yeah, so my grandma, when she started, she was selling coke. And when my dad met my mom, he was also selling coke. So when my mom introduced my dad, my grandma already knew him. She's like, "Oh, you bringing home the competition, bitch?"

• 14:53Speaker 04

What the fuck's wrong with you?

• 14:56Andrew Santino?

  Did they bond forces together?

• 14:57Speaker 04

Oh yeah, no. She visits him in jail to this day.

• 15:00Andrew Santino?

  He's in jail right now?

• 15:01Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 15:02Andrew Santino?

  Your pop?

• 15:02Speaker 04

  Forty years, yeah.

• 15:03Andrew Santino?

  Forty years?

• 15:04Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 15:04Andrew Santino?

  Good god.

• 15:05Speaker 04

He just got transferred to the same jail as R. Kelly.

• 15:08Andrew Santino?

Ooh, I'm certain it's not the same crime.

• 15:10Speaker 04

  Hope not.

• 15:12Andrew Santino?

  Your dad's doing forty.

• 15:13Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 15:13Andrew Santino?

So when's he gonna get out? When did he go in?

• 15:15Speaker 04

  Uh, 2012.

• 15:17Andrew Santino?

Good god, so fifty-two he'll get out?

• 15:19Speaker 04

Yeah, I think they reduced like five years, so it's probably like twenty, forty-eight, you're gonna come out.

• 15:23Andrew Santino?

  Damn.

• 15:24Speaker 04

Um, I just paid some lawyers, hopefully they do their job.

• 15:27Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, was it drugs? No.

• 15:29Speaker 04

  Yeah, drug trafficking.

• 15:30Andrew Santino?

Drug trafficking gives you forty years. You can kill someone and get like six.

• 15:33Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 15:34Andrew Santino?

  I don't know, that, what's the?

• 15:35Speaker 04

They made him seem like he was O'Trappo.

• 15:37Andrew Santino?

  Right.

• 15:37Speaker 04

Like, oh, he's the leader of his organization. Oh my god, look at this guy, he's running the whole crew. It's like, dude, you caught my dad driving with the drugs.

• 15:47Andrew Santino?

  That's it.

• 15:48Speaker 04

O'Trappo's not driving with the drugs.

• 15:49Andrew Santino?

  Right, O'Trappo didn't drive.

• 15:50Speaker 04

Yeah, yeah, like, like, stop treating him like that, you know, and they gave him, and he didn't snitch, so.

• 15:56Andrew Santino?

He went down by himself hard.

• 15:58Speaker 04

Yeah, and they're trying to put my brother in jail, so he was taking all the blame at that point.

• 16:03Andrew Santino?

He took everything on you, your dad took it all?

• 16:04Speaker 04

Yeah, he's like, bro, I made him do that, fuck that, you're not taking my son to jail, blah blah blah.

• 16:08Andrew Santino?

  You're sending him money.

• 16:09Speaker 04

Oh yeah, my dad's living good, bro.

• 16:11Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 16:12Speaker 04

My dad's living good in there, hopefully, I mean, he's living good, he's in prison.

• 16:16Andrew Santino?

He's living as good as he can.

• 16:17Speaker 04

He's living as good as he can.

• 16:19Andrew Santino?

  Damn, that's wild, forty years.

• 16:20Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 16:21Andrew Santino?

My dad was in, my dad was in jail when I was a kid, in and out for drugs, never, never like, never that scale, you know, but he was in and out a lot when I was a kid, which sucked, you know, I didn't understand that at all.

• 16:33Speaker 04

  Out here?

• 16:33Andrew Santino?

  In Chicago.

• 16:34Speaker 04

  Oh.

• 16:35Andrew Santino?

When, when, when did your dad go away? How old were you?

• 16:37Speaker 04

I was a junior in high school.

• 16:40Andrew Santino?

  Oh man, that's, that's tough.

• 16:41Speaker 04

He got sentenced though when I was a senior. I remember I was in piano class, and I got the-

• 16:46Andrew Santino?

  Come again.

• 16:47Speaker 04

  I got the text.

• 16:48Andrew Santino?

  You were in piano class?

• 16:49Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 16:49Andrew Santino?

You got fingers, huh? You can roll?

• 16:51Speaker 04

  No.

• 16:51Andrew Santino?

  No.

• 16:52Speaker 04

It was, uh, uh, elective that you take in high school.

• 16:55Andrew Santino?

We didn't have piano, I don't, we didn't have that.

• 16:57Speaker 04

It was, uh, uh, the teacher was nice, she just fucking passed all of us. Um, so I get the text, and I get the same, my mom, my mom sends me, she's like, your dad's just got sentenced, he was four hundred eighty months, and I'm just like.

• 17:14Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 17:14Speaker 04

That doesn't sound that bad, bro.

• 17:17Speaker 04

I thought we were gonna do years.

• 17:18Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 17:19Speaker 04

And then, and then, uh, I do the math like fuck forty years, like no fucking way. I didn't wanna be in the class, so I use this excuse and I'm like, man, my dad just got sentenced to forty years. Oh my god. Do you need to go to the prin- talk to the principal?

• 17:34Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 17:34Speaker 04

I'm like, I do, yeah. They're all like, oh my god, Renee, Renee, what's, you must be going through, I'm like, I don't know, I don't. I'm gonna go home, no, my mom's not home. Your mom's not home? No, she's not home. Do you need food? Maybe, in and out, double cheeseburger, please.

• 17:54Andrew Santino?

Someone's gotta have a come up.

• 17:55Speaker 04

Hey, bro, I just, but I, my dad, going to jail forty years. It was around senior year, so I didn't have nothing to write for my college essay. And then he got locked up, I'm like, yes.

• 18:08Andrew Santino?

  Got it.

• 18:09Speaker 04

Got it. And then it got me into a Florida university, it got me my, um, my story in standup. Uh, got, some of my biggest jokes are about my father going to jail and it got me. I think without my dad going to jail, I wouldn't have never won Stand Up NBC, which is that competition they do, the, the diversity competition, the, uh, looking for the next brown or gay guy.

• 18:33Andrew Santino?

Looking for the next brown on NBC. Are you brown and gay? Right to the top.

• 18:40Speaker 04

So I was Mexican Indian, my dad was in prison, and I remember when I was walking into those meetings, they're like, so is your dad really in jail? I'm like, yeah.

• 18:48Andrew Santino?

Yeah, they thought that was all bullshit?

• 18:49Speaker 04

They're like, oh my god, it's gold.

• 18:51Andrew Santino?

We thought you made it up. We thought you were a good storyteller.

• 18:55Speaker 04

But like I said, bro, without my dad doing that, I don't think I would be where I'm at right now.

• 18:59Andrew Santino?

  Well.

• 19:00Speaker 04

I tell my dad that all the time, like, don't feel bad about yourself, I know it's harder that you're not able to provide for the family anymore and and you're not able to be here to do anything, but.

• 19:09Andrew Santino?

But now it's on you to provide.

• 19:10Speaker 04

Yeah, without you, I wouldn't have my life, so.

• 19:13Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 19:14Speaker 04

Don't feel so guilty about what you did and, you know, we got us some good lawyers, I actually had to be two for the best lawyers and that's what I got.

• 19:20Andrew Santino?

Really? Is that what you did?

• 19:22Speaker 04

I'm like, I need the best, this is what I asked, I'm like, I need the best lawyers, no cheap shit, wagyu of lawyers.

• 19:30Andrew Santino?

Grass fed lawyers populating now. You know what's so funny though, that it is true. It's like you turn something so shit into something so good. And hopefully when he gets out, you still get a life together.

• 19:40Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 19:41Andrew Santino?

  You know?

• 19:41Speaker 04

  Yeah, I mean.

• 19:42Andrew Santino?

Cause he'll be, how old will your father be when he's out?

• 19:44Speaker 04

He's gonna get deported as soon as he gets out, but it's like another thing we have to go through, but.

• 19:48Andrew Santino?

  God damn.

• 19:49Speaker 04

I, you know, I wanted to buy property in Mexico for a long time, so.

• 19:52Andrew Santino?

Would you? Where'd you, where? Where would you go?

• 19:54Speaker 04

I mean, obviously somewhere close to me. I mean, he's got a.

• 19:57Andrew Santino?

  Like right over the border?

• 19:58Speaker 04

Yeah, like somewhere like in Baja Mexico somewhere.

• 20:00Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, Baja's great.

• 20:01Speaker 04

  By the beach.

• 20:02Andrew Santino?

Yeah, it'll be right on the water. Would you live down there full time? No?

• 20:04Speaker 04

He's gonna be all bored. He's like, I'm gonna go sell drugs again, man. Fuck this shit.

• 20:09Speaker 04

The cartel's here. I need to call them.

• 20:12Andrew Santino?

  I gotta check in.

• 20:12Speaker 04

  I gotta check in, man.

• 20:13Andrew Santino?

I'm checking in real fast. Where, where's your family from?

• 20:17Speaker 04

  Uh, Metroakan. Metroakan, Mexico.

• 20:19Andrew Santino?

  Metroakan?

• 20:20Speaker 04

  Metroakan, man.

• 20:21Andrew Santino?

  Some of the best food.

• 20:22Speaker 04

  Yeah. Yeah. Best carnitas, bro.

• 20:24Andrew Santino?

  Best carnitas.

• 20:25Speaker 04

Uh, avocados come from Metroakan, man.

• 20:28Andrew Santino?

Yeah, they do, right? That's what their commercial, when they go avocados from Mexico.

• 20:31Speaker 04

  No.

• 20:31Andrew Santino?

Metroakan. They should plug that in there.

• 20:34Speaker 04

  I didn't, I didn't, they don't do that.

• 20:36Andrew Santino?

  No, they should.

• 20:36Speaker 04

  They fucking should.

• 20:38Andrew Santino?

They should let them know. You got, is, if, do you have a spot in LA? That, that you loved as a kid that blew up? That you hate that blew up? Like a taco spot that you were like, we used to go all the time and then it became like a popular spot?

• 20:50Speaker 04

Uh, my dad owned a Mexican restaurant, bro, so we just ate at my dad's spot a lot.

• 20:53Andrew Santino?

Where is it? Where was it?

• 20:54Speaker 04

It was on, um, right next to La Jolla on, uh.

• 20:57Andrew Santino?

  On Lankersham?

• 20:58Speaker 04

  On Chandler and Island.

• 20:59Andrew Santino?

  Oh, really?

• 21:00Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 21:01Andrew Santino?

  What was it called?

• 21:01Speaker 04

It was called Super Tacos Metroakan.

• 21:03Andrew Santino?

  Super Tacos Metroakan!

• 21:05Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah.

• 21:07Speaker 04

Yeah, my dad, uh, you know, he lost, he lost it after like 10 years because he was just going to jail and.

• 21:13Andrew Santino?

Yeah, but the business, those businesses, they're hard to run. Would you ever reopen it in like, in memory?

• 21:17Speaker 04

  Hell yeah.

• 21:18Andrew Santino?

Like to shout out to your dad?

• 21:19Speaker 04

Hell yeah. I'm a franchise at McDonald's first, but yeah.

• 21:21Andrew Santino?

Is that what you want to do? You love McDonald's, huh? You've talked about it three times, even before the interview.

• 21:26Speaker 04

  Fucking love McDonald's.

• 21:27Andrew Santino?

What, what? Are you a every day or every other day?

• 21:30Speaker 04

There's moments where I'll fast until like nine P M.

• 21:33Andrew Santino?

  You won't eat all day?

• 21:34Speaker 04

  Just eat McDonald's.

• 21:35Andrew Santino?

  Shut up.

• 21:36Speaker 04

  Sorry, guys.

• 21:37Andrew Santino?

  What's your order?

• 21:38Speaker 04

Uh, so I'm a ghetto kid, so I still order off the dollar menu. Like, it's not even a dollar menu anymore, but I I still act like it is.

• 21:45Andrew Santino?

It's a two dollar menu now, right?

• 21:46Speaker 04

  Double cheeseburger.

• 21:47Andrew Santino?

Value menu. It's a value menu is what they call it, yeah.

• 21:50Speaker 04

Double cheeseburger, McChicken with cheese fries and a Diet Coke.

• 21:54Andrew Santino?

  Mmm.

• 21:54Speaker 04

Or, uh, Big Mac with extra cheese fries.

• 21:58Andrew Santino?

God, I love a Big Mac. That's still my favorite.

• 22:00Speaker 04

The new burger of the big arch ain't bad either.

• 22:02Andrew Santino?

I've heard it's okay, although the C E O didn't sell it well, because he was eating it like, this is delicious.

• 22:07Speaker 04

  It was good.

• 22:08Andrew Santino?

Yeah, I've heard it's okay. I'm gonna try it. When I, when I was come, when I was coming up in comedy and I was rubbing nickels together and I didn't have a lot of money, there used to be, on the way from my house, because I live down by Culver City, uh, off National and the freeway.

• 22:21Speaker 04

  Mmm.

• 22:22Andrew Santino?

Not so nice. And I would, used to go up, there used to be a Burger King up there. Um, and now it's at Starb, now it's like a Starbucks or something. And I used to go to the Burger King, and they would have those dollar burgers, and I would just get five of those and put them in my fridge, and that's what I would eat every single day. Yeah, that or Wendy's, because Wendy, they, Burger King used to have.

• 22:41Speaker 04

  Been good friends, man.

• 22:42Andrew Santino?

And, bro, they had a great, they had a great value menu. So I would eat a burger, go do a show, you know? In the morning, I would get food at my job, because they had a kitchen, so I could eat breakfast.

• 22:51Speaker 04

  Mm-hmm.

• 22:51Andrew Santino?

Then I would get home and eat a burger out of the fridge.

• 22:53Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 22:53Andrew Santino?

I did it every day for a long time.

• 22:55Speaker 04

I mean, I lived across the street from McDonald's for a while, and like, that's probably why I'm fat. Um, but, uh, it was, it was like, when I was a kid, I remember just like finding quarters in the south, and like, oh, that's enough for a double cheeseburger. And like, go across the street, and my, my whole family started, I'm like, I'm gonna go eat, guys.

• 23:13Andrew Santino?

Yeah. You guys figure it out on your own, I got it.

• 23:16Speaker 04

Oh, yeah, no, I mean, I mean, it was, it was one of those things where, you know, just McDonald's, I don't know, I do believe in when they say. They put something in it. It's a dick thing.

• 23:25Andrew Santino?

  Sure.

• 23:26Speaker 04

  Cause it is.

• 23:26Andrew Santino?

It's sugar and carbs and everything we like.

• 23:28Speaker 04

Have you seen that lady who opened that burger after 20 years?

• 23:31Andrew Santino?

  It's the same.

• 23:32Speaker 04

  It's the same.

• 23:32Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, nothing changed.

• 23:33Speaker 04

  Nothing changed.

• 23:33Andrew Santino?

I know they sell that as a bad thing. RFK is like, "That's terrible. It's too many preservatives." But I gotta tell you, I think it's good. It lasted.

• 23:40Speaker 04

  You're gonna shit it out.

• 23:41Andrew Santino?

Yeah, you're gonna shit it out. McDonald's, you're gonna shit it out.

• 23:44Speaker 04

Yeah, like you're gonna shit it out. Like, it's not gonna be in your body for 10 years. What are you worried about what it looks like 20 years from now?

• 23:50Andrew Santino?

Right, right. You'll take what you need from it.

• 23:52Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 23:52Andrew Santino?

And then it'll get out of you.

• 23:53Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 23:54Andrew Santino?

I'm sure, look, I'm sure, everything else is killing us anyway. I don't think...

• 23:58Speaker 04

I like what you said earlier, man. That's why I like white people, man. You guys fucking come up with some cool fucking sayings.

• 24:03Andrew Santino?

  What?

• 24:04Speaker 04

  Rubbing two nickels together.

• 24:05Andrew Santino?

I was rubbing two nickels together, yeah.

• 24:07Speaker 04

That... If you're drunk, that could, that could sound really racist. But, but, if you fucking get drunk, I was rubbing two...

• 24:15Andrew Santino?

I was rubbing two nickels together, trying to get by in these streets. Struggling, as they say.

• 24:22Speaker 01

  In here, we pour whiskey.

• 24:25Andrew Santino?

How are my Shady Rays basically the same quality as $200 sunglasses that I used to buy? I ain't exaggerating. They feel every bit as premium as the expensive brands that I've owned, but the difference is, I'm not stressing about these. These things, they're amazing. They're durable, they're wonderful, they're great, but I don't care, because I wear these at the lake, on the boat, at the game, on the go, on the road. Whatever happens, happens, okay? Look, they're gonna be fine, because if you knock them off, you lose them. They replace them. Shady Rays gets ya a new pair. Lost or broken, they send you a new pair with their lost and broken protection. Come on. And they're actually premium. You're gonna be out at the pool, hanging out, and you're gonna lose it. They're gonna keep it. You gotta go to Shady Rays and grab yourself a pair today. Go to ShadyRays.com, grab a pair. • 25:41Andrew Santino?

It is funny though, you, you did get money and then you stayed in the valley because a lot of people get money and then they get fancy and they want to go to like Beverly Hills and all that stuff.

• 25:48Speaker 04

I mean, I, I went to my fancy.

• 25:51Andrew Santino?

You went to the valley fancy, I got you.

• 25:52Speaker 04

Yeah, I went to Calabasas, Will and Harris area. That's me, that's making it to me.

• 25:56Andrew Santino?

  Right.

• 25:57Speaker 04

For me, it's just like growing up, you're just like always like, I used to go out and um, my dad had like a landscaping job for a while and he worked in housing in Calabasas and I was like, damn, bro.

• 26:07Andrew Santino?

  This is the dream.

• 26:08Speaker 04

Living here one day, bro, and just, I'm not there yet, but I'm like five minutes away.

• 26:13Andrew Santino?

  I'm next door.

• 26:14Speaker 04

  I'm next door.

• 26:15Andrew Santino?

Does that ever hit you though? Do you ever think about that, that you're like, look at where, look, I did it, like?

• 26:18Speaker 04

Hell yeah, bro, when I wake up and I'm in my house, bro, like, you know, it's a, you know, I think I'm the only Mexican in my block.

• 26:25Andrew Santino?

  It's great.

• 26:26Speaker 04

  It's, it's a good feeling, man.

• 26:27Andrew Santino?

Hello Renee! Renee! Can you chill with the smoking of the marijuana, please? My daughter has practice. Do they rat on you? Do people not like it?

• 26:39Speaker 04

Nah, nah, I have, I have.

• 26:40Andrew Santino?

  Everyone's good.

• 26:40Speaker 04

I don't, I haven't even seen my neighbors, bro, they're just so chill and the only one I've seen is the one across the street and she's cool, man. She seems like a,

• 26:50Speaker 04

she seems like one of those that will be, can be your best friend or your worst enemy.

• 26:54Andrew Santino?

  Oh, yeah, yeah, Karen.

• 26:55Speaker 04

  Yeah, uh, yeah.

• 26:56Andrew Santino?

  Karen, she lurks.

• 26:57Speaker 04

But she hasn't been a Karen to me.

• 26:58Andrew Santino?

Yeah, but it's there, it's inside, yeah.

• 27:01Speaker 04

One, one little, it'll come out.

• 27:02Andrew Santino?

Renee, do you have to park on that side?

• 27:04Speaker 04

  Oh, yeah.

• 27:05Andrew Santino?

Yeah, it's that kind of shit.

• 27:06Speaker 04

  Yes, yes.

• 27:06Andrew Santino?

  Oh, no.

• 27:07Speaker 04

The first day I went in, when I went to go look at the house, that was the first thing she said, you have to park on that side.

• 27:11Andrew Santino?

Oh dude, a hundred percent. It's inside, it's always ruminating.

• 27:15Speaker 04

So it's like, you're just like, go over. Chief sent her a construction guide to tell me, hey man, you gotta park on that side, man.

• 27:21Andrew Santino?

You speak the same language as him, right? Can you go talk to him about this? Dude, I live, that's the, but that's a symptom of LA. We grew up in the Midwest, I'm from Chicago, he's from Minnesota. Back where we come from, you know your neighbors.

• 27:33Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 27:33Andrew Santino?

You, you know, you know your neighbors. Like, it's not like LA, like I lived in an old place for almost six years.

• 27:38Speaker 04

It's like the movies, right? Like?

• 27:40Andrew Santino?

  Oh, you know everybody.

• 27:41Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 27:41Andrew Santino?

Well, and it's not that everyone's like, you know, hey, what? Everyone's sweet, but you know them. Like, you have a relationship that's either like, we don't really talk to them, but I know that guy.

• 27:49Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 27:49Andrew Santino?

That guy's a- You know, he was, you know, was in the army for a while, his wife works as a nurse. You just know everyone's story. I lived in, you know, in this neighborhood for five years. We knew two people, I mean, you know.

• 28:00Speaker 04

  Yeah, dude.

• 28:01Andrew Santino?

It just, LA is different like that. Yeah, LA, well, LA is more like you got a house so you didn't have to talk to people.

• 28:06Speaker 04

Yeah. Dude, I got a house, I don't have to worry about fucking being loud or like stomping in the neighbors like, shut the fuck up.

• 28:13Andrew Santino?

With a broom on the ceiling?

• 28:14Speaker 04

  Yeah, dude.

• 28:15Andrew Santino?

Did you grow up in an apartment in the valley?

• 28:17Speaker 04

  That's always grew up.

• 28:18Andrew Santino?

  Your whole life?

• 28:19Speaker 04

Yeah, my whole life. We never had a house, that's why it's a big deal for me.

• 28:22Andrew Santino?

Does your mom live with you? No?

• 28:24Speaker 04

  No.

• 28:24Andrew Santino?

What, did you, does she still live in the same spot?

• 28:26Speaker 04

Uh, I tried to move her out, she's like, I like it where I'm at, it's cheap. I'm like, huh, okay.

• 28:32Andrew Santino?

Isn't that funny, parents are like that?

• 28:33Speaker 04

That's why I don't go to your house. The fans will recognize me at the apartment we live at.

• 28:39Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 28:39Speaker 04

Actually, they, there's people that know, like, that's where his mom's apartment. Like, I don't like that.

• 28:44Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, it's a little weird.

• 28:44Speaker 04

Yeah, and she wanted, I got her a Lexus for her birthday, and like, and she was like, I'm not trying to show off, by the way, guys, I sound like a fucking asshole.

• 28:53Andrew Santino?

No, that's a proud moment, buy your mom a car.

• 28:55Speaker 04

Yeah, I got my mom a car, and she's like, couple days later, like, you know I wanted the Cadillac. I'm like, mom, you live in the fucking hood, you don't even have a parking spot.

• 29:04Andrew Santino?

  That's insane.

• 29:04Speaker 04

Like, what are you talking about? And, and I'm not gonna get you an Escalade, you can have the nicest car on the block.

• 29:10Andrew Santino?

Lexus is a nice car, Escalade is-

• 29:12Speaker 04

It's a very nice car, dude.

• 29:14Andrew Santino?

Escalades are like a hundred grand now.

• 29:16Speaker 04

  Yeah, dude, I'm like-

• 29:17Andrew Santino?

I remember when they didn't used to be like that, I remember when Escalade was kinda like a, the same level as a Suburban, or one of these big SUVs, you know, the G, the Tahos and stuff. Now they're like, what, they start at eighty thousand dollars?

• 29:26Speaker 04

Dude, it's crazy, I went, I went into, I walked into Mercedes, and I, and I was just like, I wanna buy this car. And, and they're like, okay, oh yeah, just put the ten grand on payment, and I was just like, let me call my accountant. And my accountant's like, bro, get the fuck out of there right now.

• 29:43Andrew Santino?

  Leave now.

• 29:44Speaker 04

Get the fuck out now. I was like, what do you mean? Tell them, thank you, and you talk to your account, just walk out. And I walked out, and he's like, and I'm like, okay, I walked out. He's like, give it a day.

• 29:57Andrew Santino?

  They'll call you.

• 29:58Speaker 04

Yeah. Twenty minutes later, the manager calls me, Renee Vaca, oh my god, I'm a big fan. I just, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, we couldn't get a deal, man. Is there anything we can do, anything we can do? I'm like, I don't know, man, you gotta talk to my account, man. I'm like, I talk to my, I told my account, like, I goes, what should I tell him? And he's like, tell him you want zero down payment, you don't want this, this, this, and you only want the lease for thirty-six months. I'm just like, and then I tell him, like, I don't think they're gonna go for that. And I sent it to him, and he's just like, okay, we're gonna see what we can do tomorrow. And I'm just like, damn, bro, have I been, have we been getting ripped off from these fucking?

• 30:30Andrew Santino?

  Yes.

• 30:31Speaker 04

  Car salesmen forever?

• 30:33Andrew Santino?

It's the only industry in the world where the price is dictated by the wind.

• 30:37Speaker 04

  Down payment?

• 30:38Andrew Santino?

All that shit. It's all cash for them.

• 30:40Speaker 04

  That's what I heard.

• 30:41Andrew Santino?

  It's all bullshit.

• 30:42Speaker 04

I heard it all goes to them.

• 30:43Andrew Santino?

  It's all bullshit.

• 30:44Speaker 04

And you know the fucking car salesman was like, yeah, man, my, my girl's in labor right now, man.

• 30:48Andrew Santino?

Oh, he's trying to hit you with it.

• 30:50Speaker 04

Yeah, I'm just like, how long has your girl been in labor for? For years? Fucking liar.

• 30:57Andrew Santino?

She's perpetually pregnant. We just can't have the kid, it's gotta stay in there and cook. No, you can't, you know what it is so funny? I don't give them any weight anymore, cause I, I, I like cars and I've always, I learned as a young guy. My dad took me to get my first car, my first car I ever got in LA, uh, was a, um, Hyundai Sonata. I could afford a Hyundai Sonata, the payments on a Sonata were like two twenty. Yeah, they were fine, they were two twenty-five a month, and I could, I could just get by. And, uh, and I remember listening to him talk to the car dealer. And I was like, oh, these motherfuckers are all full of shit.

• 31:30Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 31:31Andrew Santino?

Like, I, I, I was like, oh, this is all a scam. Cause he was like, no, we don't wanna do that, that, that's not what we wanna do. I'm like, oh, you just tell them what you wanna do? He's like, yeah, up until a point, they're, they're just, they're just trying to peel more money off of you. That's all it was. So we got it down to whatever the original price was that I was supposed to pay on it, cause you walk out of there and you're like, I think I'm paying eighty bucks more than I thought I was gonna pay a month. For what?

• 31:51Speaker 04

  Bro.

• 31:51Andrew Santino?

  Just going to them.

• 31:52Speaker 04

So we're gonna, what's your, what do you drive right now? What's your favorite car to drive?

• 31:55Andrew Santino?

My favorite car, what's, what's my favorite car to drive is probably the, the, the Kia Soul, that's the one we have.

• 32:01Speaker 04

  What?

• 32:01Andrew Santino?

We drive a Kia Soul. Or the Accord. Or the Accord, yeah, the Accord or the Kia Soul. You stay low dude.

• 32:06Speaker 04

  I like that.

• 32:07Andrew Santino?

  I'm not like you, man.

• 32:08Speaker 04

  I like that.

• 32:08Andrew Santino?

  You're a fancy boy.

• 32:10Speaker 04

Dude, I Uber Black everywhere. And they say I'm racist.

• 32:17Andrew Santino?

  That's good.

• 32:19Andrew Santino?

When's the last time you took an Uber?

• 32:20Speaker 04

I don't even drive, bro, to be honest with you.

• 32:22Andrew Santino?

But when's the last time you took an Uber X? A regular Uber? Be real.

• 32:26Speaker 04

I think I took a cab at the Burbank Airport the other day and I was in a Prius and I was like, what the fuck?

• 32:31Andrew Santino?

You got hung up on that?

• 32:33Speaker 04

I was like, oh my god!

• 32:35Andrew Santino?

  Can't do it.

• 32:36Speaker 04

I felt like... And then after I left, I was like, you know what? Enjoy this, man. Cause there was moments where you wish you had a Prius back in the day.

• 32:45Andrew Santino?

That's right. And you never know.

• 32:46Speaker 04

  Mm-mm.

• 32:47Andrew Santino?

You never know, life flips, you know?

• 32:49Speaker 04

I was just pretending like Bill Burr's driving me. Pretend Bill Burr is driving you right now, bro.

• 32:53Andrew Santino?

Renee! Dude, I love your fucking shit! How many bags you got? What's in there, fucking cash? Fucking Mexicans flashing all the time? You carrying around your whole bank account on ya?

• 33:04Speaker 04

That's a good one, I've never heard a good Bill Burr.

• 33:07Andrew Santino?

He's the best, man, he's so fucking funny, that guy. No, every time I get in a conversation with him, does he know you? Do you know him?

• 33:13Speaker 04

Uh, nah, I never really, I'm working with his company, but...

• 33:17Andrew Santino?

  Oh, you are?

• 33:17Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 33:18Andrew Santino?

What are you doing with them?

• 33:18Speaker 04

  All Things Comedy?

• 33:19Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, what are you doing?

• 33:19Speaker 04

Uh, working on a Jerry Springer type show.

• 33:22Andrew Santino?

  No shit?

• 33:23Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 33:23Andrew Santino?

  With you as the host?

• 33:24Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 33:24Andrew Santino?

That's fucking brilliant. You know, my senior ditch day of...

• 33:27Speaker 04

  Not like what fucking, um...

• 33:29Andrew Santino?

  What?

• 33:29Speaker 04

  Tim Dillon did.

• 33:31Andrew Santino?

Tim was like a Donahue type of thing. It was like a, uh...

• 33:35Speaker 04

No, no, that was, I mean, it was kinda like that, but it was like... Ours is gonna be different.

• 33:40Andrew Santino?

Is it you as the host?

• 33:41Speaker 04

Yeah, ours is gonna... We already asked some fans to submit some submissions and it's pretty crazy.

• 33:47Andrew Santino?

Yeah. No, Tim's was good. I love Jerry Springer, dude.

• 33:49Speaker 04

I love Tim and I, and, uh, I'm...

• 33:52Andrew Santino?

  But you want it different.

• 33:53Speaker 04

I wanted, I saw what Tim was going for, though.

• 33:55Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 33:55Speaker 04

And, uh, I was just like... I think a Mexican needs to do this.

• 33:59Andrew Santino?

  A Mexican doesn't, I think a Mexican does.

• 34:01Speaker 04

Have you seen the Mexicans in the line, they're just like, "Ah, fuck you, fuck you!"

• 34:05Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, you want them.

• 34:06Speaker 04

  I want...

• 34:06Andrew Santino?

  You wanna rile them up.

• 34:07Speaker 04

I wanna fucking, let's have fun again, bro.

• 34:09Andrew Santino?

Jerry was a genius. I went to, our senior ditch day, I went to go to Jerry Springer with a bunch of friends. We got high as fuck. And then, because he filmed in Chicago.

• 34:16Speaker 04

  You met Jerkman?

• 34:17Andrew Santino?

No, no, we went to his, we went to a taping our senior year.

• 34:19Speaker 04

  Oh, what?

• 34:20Andrew Santino?

Yeah, because he films in Chicag- or filmed in Chicago, rest in peace.

• 34:23Speaker 04

  Yeah, I saw his documentary.

• 34:25Andrew Santino?

  Phenomenal, right?

• 34:25Speaker 04

  I love it.

• 34:26Andrew Santino?

But the dude, he changed daytime TV because he understood pretty quickly like how to pit these things against each other and show this world in a way where it's like, well, this is, this is all their world.

• 34:35Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 34:35Andrew Santino?

He didn't paint it, he just showed you what it looked like.

• 34:37Speaker 04

Did you see how like the producers preparing the?

• 34:39Andrew Santino?

  Oh, bro, it was amazing.

• 34:40Speaker 04

  They're like, fucking, yeah.

• 34:41Andrew Santino?

Yeah, you gotta amp them the fuck up.

• 34:42Speaker 04

I can't wait to do that.

• 34:43Andrew Santino?

Yeah, it's gonna be fun. They got a lot of criticism, but he was just showing the world what people, how people are when they're, when they're not paying attention, you know? You don't really know what's going on.

• 34:53Speaker 04

I'm still deciding if I'm gonna wear a suit or not. I don't think so.

• 34:56Andrew Santino?

I think you should wear what you always wear. I think when you change your image for the thing, it doesn't look real to you.

• 35:00Speaker 04

And that's what I told myself, I'm just gonna be myself. And it's, it's just, like I said, bro, it's something that people need, man, and I, I've been doing that since college, man. I remember just figuring out what the people need.

• 35:14Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 35:14Speaker 04

Supplying the man. And you're always like, uh, when I was in college, I remember there was this, uh, dean of, uh, the, the-

• 35:22Andrew Santino?

  Dean of admissions?

• 35:22Speaker 04

  The dean of economics.

• 35:23Andrew Santino?

  Oh.

• 35:24Speaker 04

Some shit like that, I don't know. But, um, shout out to him, bro. Fuck, what was his name?

• 35:32Andrew Santino?

Shout out to that guy. What was that guy's name?

• 35:34Speaker 04

Uh, shout out to him, man. And, um, I remember he we- he walked into my economics class and he was just like, "I'm looking for students with bright ideas. We have a venture lab. We're gonna, we'll give you an office if you have an idea that we can finance or find investors for." And everyone was trying to come up with this next big thing, like, "Oh, my God, I have this, bro. I have this that can save water. I can, this that can make water." And I'm like, "All right." They were like, "We live in Merced, California, one of the most boring cities on earth, right? And you guys are thinking about factories and, and, and apps and things like that?" So I went up to him. Not even while they were going up to him, I found him like having lunch. And I was just like, "Hey, bro."

• 36:20Speaker 04

That's not how I went up to him.

• 36:22Andrew Santino?

  "Hey, bro!"

• 36:23Speaker 04

"Hey, hey, fucker!" "Fucking bitch!" "I have an idea, puton."

• 36:31Speaker 04

  Oh, but, uh.

• 36:33Andrew Santino?

He's like, what is it, Hoss?

• 36:35Speaker 04

  I like that.

• 36:36Andrew Santino?

  I like that. That's what's up.

• 36:40Speaker 04

No, but, but I went up to him, I was like, look, everyone's trying to come up to you with this badass idea. They're not solving the real problem. Like, what's that, Renee? Boredom. We're fucking bored, okay? The city needs something. They, they need like a, they, they, put a music studio, put Disneyland. We're two hours from San Francisco, three hours, we're in the middle of LA and San Francisco. Put a fucking amusement park in here so both can come, something nice. And then I was just fucking going on, like, you need a fucking comedy club, oh, blah, you need this. I was just like, you need entertainment in this city, bro. And he was like, I like that, I like that. And he just gave my own office, bro. Fucking like, was giving me support. I was like his, he was giving, using me as examples, as an example to other students.

• 37:24Speaker 04

And I was just like a fucking, I'm just, I'm selling shrooms.

• 37:28Andrew Santino?

Yeah, but you were his protege.

• 37:29Speaker 04

Yeah, and I, and I started comedy shows there, but I, like, like I said, it was just like, the whole Jerry Springer, like, it brings me to that same feeling. It's like, bro, people just need something right now.

• 37:37Andrew Santino?

  They need that thing.

• 37:38Speaker 04

  They just need this.

• 37:39Andrew Santino?

You started a comedy club in college?

• 37:41Speaker 04

Yeah, it wasn't a comedy club, I just found like three restaurants and used them.

• 37:45Andrew Santino?

  To do shows?

• 37:46Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 37:46Andrew Santino?

What, what year did you start, when you were?

• 37:48Speaker 04

  Nineteen.

• 37:48Andrew Santino?

  Nineteen years old?

• 37:49Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 37:49Andrew Santino?

What school was that at, in Merced?

• 37:50Speaker 04

  UC, UC Merced.

• 37:51Andrew Santino?

  Oh, UC Merced.

• 37:52Speaker 04

  The.

• 37:53Andrew Santino?

Why'd you go there? Why up there?

• 37:54Speaker 04

Uh, I got accepted to UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Merced, and I was like.

• 38:01Andrew Santino?

  Santa Barbara was too white.

• 38:02Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 38:03Andrew Santino?

  Riverside's a little too Riverside-y.

• 38:05Speaker 04

  Close to home.

• 38:06Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 38:07Speaker 04

  And Merced was new.

• 38:09Andrew Santino?

  Far enough away.

• 38:10Speaker 04

The only thing I didn't like is that they were accepting everybody. And they still, I think they still have a ninety percent admission rate.

• 38:16Andrew Santino?

What's the acceptance rate of UC?

• 38:17Speaker 04

Yeah, it was the acceptance rate of UC Merced, bro.

• 38:20Andrew Santino?

What's the acceptance rate right now?

• 38:21Speaker 04

  But it was a UC.

• 38:22Andrew Santino?

Dog, I went to, you know, I went to Arizona State. We, we, you can, I can go back now and start all over again.

• 38:28Speaker 05

Do we want to place bets?

• 38:30Andrew Santino?

Oh, yeah, let's place bets. Alright, let's make.

• 38:31Speaker 04

Is it a ninety percent still?

• 38:32Andrew Santino?

Let me, no, no, you, what's your guess? What's your guess? I'm gonna say it's eighty-two percent. What's yours?

• 38:37Speaker 04

I'm gonna say it's still around. Ninety percent.

• 38:40Andrew Santino?

  Wow, what is it?

• 38:41Speaker 05

Recently reported at approximately ninety-five point one two.

• 38:45Andrew Santino?

  Oh my god!

• 38:46Speaker 05

  Seventy-seven point seven.

• 38:47Andrew Santino?

Dude, everybody getting in, everyone's getting in, hop in. Imagine if you're in the five percent.

• 38:53Speaker 04

I mean, who wants to go to Merced, bro?

• 38:55Andrew Santino?

But imagine if you're in the five that gets a no. Like, I mean, how bad does that sting?

• 38:58Speaker 05

  Oh, that's so funny.

• 38:59Andrew Santino?

  If you read that online.

• 39:01Speaker 04

Oh, UC is crazy for ninety-five percent.

• 39:03Andrew Santino?

  Well, because it's.

• 39:04Speaker 05

Their fall twenty twenty-five acceptance rate was ninety-seven point seven.

• 39:07Andrew Santino?

  They said, come on in.

• 39:08Speaker 04

  Bro, imagine a UC, like, you're talking a top-notch.

• 39:12Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, UC schools are great.

• 39:15Speaker 04

  That's why I went there.

• 39:18Speaker 04

So I went there and, you know, it was, it was, it was a new school, so they were handing out opportunities, like, they gave me a fucking office, bro, at my, my freshman year.

• 39:25Andrew Santino?

They give you a scholarship to go there?

• 39:26Speaker 04

No, I mean, yeah, yeah, yeah, there was, there was, I, I mean, I don't remember, I think I paid those off, I think, but.

• 39:32Andrew Santino?

You think, well, we hope, call the account.

• 39:33Speaker 04

I definitely had some financial aid, but, uh, yeah, it was, you know, it was, if, if I didn't go to Merced, I would have never became a comedian, bro. It, it made me, first of all, I was bored.

• 39:47Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 39:48Speaker 04

Second of all, it made me realize, like, oh my god, all these kids are dumb.

• 39:55Speaker 04

  First of all.

• 39:57Speaker 04

  And two.

• 39:58Andrew Santino?

All these kids are dumb, all of them.

• 40:01Speaker 04

And they don't know what they want to do until they, they, they die. And I was listening to motivational speeches, I wanted to be a motivational speaker, I was listening to Jim Rohn, I was into Eric Thomas, you know, I was into all of them, bro. And I was like, every, all, all, they always said, like, you know, find something you're passionate about, find something that you know that, that, that you'll never quit. You know, something that's easy for you, hard for others, and I'm just like, damn, bro, I need to figure out what I'm gonna do till the day I die. Because these kids are majoring in this, they're majoring in that, they're majoring in this, but. They really don't know if that's what they want to do till the day they die.

• 40:39Andrew Santino?

Right, they think it's what they want to do.

• 40:40Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 40:40Andrew Santino?

Right, but that's what most people, right, most people. Most people are figuring, my, my dad retired and he was like, I wonder what I'm gonna do for a living. It's like a, you know, he, he, it's just, you know, I think it's hard.

• 40:50Speaker 04

Yeah, it's very hard. So when I found it at nineteen, I was doing acid, I did shrooms. I was really searching for myself. I was, I was, I was, I'm a big Steve Jobs fan and watching the Ashton Kutcher movie, this fucking acid was like, I'm gonna build apple. I really thought that's how it was gonna be.

• 41:09Andrew Santino?

  I'm gonna build avocado.

• 41:11Speaker 04

I'm gonna go to Michoacan and innovate on avocado.

• 41:16Speaker 04

  Innovation.

• 41:20Speaker 04

So when I did acid, man, I was really searching for myself. I remember just, uh, doing shrooms and acid and just having my friends over and I'll perform for them, thinking I was funny. We're just all fucking high.

• 41:31Andrew Santino?

Yeah, but you're probably coming up with something, you're probably finding your, your voice.

• 41:34Speaker 04

One hundred percent, bro. I used to, uh, and then I told myself, I'm gonna be a comedian, bro. And I stopped going to class. I stopped, uh, I just used, I, I cheated on my test to get financial aid. I, I dropped out tenth year, uh, my, my second year officially, uh, and I was just like, tenth year, still glad. And then, um, yeah, bro, I remember I snuck into the auditorium and performed for some friends, cause at night the auditorium was open for cleaning. And, uh, we stayed until the cleaning, he tells us to get out. And I would just fucking be there, just fucking performing and just getting ready for my show and it was fun, bro. I would have never be, I, I did, I did a year and a half in Mercedes and then came to LA. I was like, I, time to go home with this.

• 42:16Andrew Santino?

  And you knew.

• 42:17Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 42:17Andrew Santino?

And you started at the haha, that was like, that's your home club.

• 42:19Speaker 04

Oh, man, Terry took me in. It was like my mom, bro.

• 42:23Andrew Santino?

Did you ever go there when you were a kid? Like when you were a high school kid, you ever go watch a show?

• 42:27Speaker 04

I passed by it. I never knew.

• 42:29Andrew Santino?

  Right.

• 42:29Speaker 04

What, what, what exactly it was, but, um, yeah, bro, that Terry, you know, that she changed, she, she had me following hard acts, bro, like, I mean, I mean, the hard acts that would come to haha.

• 42:43Andrew Santino?

  People will come through.

• 42:45Speaker 04

No, yeah, no, yeah, no, that, you know, like, uh, Jesus Povoda was a big one when I started.

• 42:50Andrew Santino?

  Yeah.

• 42:50Speaker 04

He's funny as shit and I remember just having to follow him was one of like, fuck, I would get nervous as shit. Shout out to Jesus. And, um, you know, just following like Greg Wilson or, you know.

• 43:01Andrew Santino?

  Guys that were seasoned.

• 43:03Speaker 04

Yeah, you know, just, just, you know, and, and, you know, it was just cool, man. You know, like when Joe Coy or Fluffy would pop in, you know, Terry would be like, go up for them.

• 43:13Andrew Santino?

  So they could see you?

• 43:14Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 43:14Andrew Santino?

  Oh, that's smart.

• 43:15Speaker 04

See you and, um, you know, yeah, I owe a lot to the Ha Ha, bro.

• 43:19Andrew Santino?

Cheers to them. Shout out to Ha. Did you ever open for Fluffy or any of those guys? Did anybody ever take you?

• 43:23Speaker 04

Yeah, Fluffy gave me my first arena.

• 43:25Andrew Santino?

  Did he?

• 43:25Speaker 04

So at the Toyota Arena and that's where I'm doing my first arena.

• 43:28Andrew Santino?

And you're gonna be at the Toyota Arena. I know, and God bless you. Thank you for asking me to come out there. I can't do it because we're filming.

• 43:32Speaker 04

  Really wanted you there.

• 43:33Andrew Santino?

I know, we too, man. I wanted to go down there. We're shooting, uh, Game? We're shooting game that week. Yeah.

• 43:37Speaker 04

Yeah, Ty Dolla Sign, when I asked him, like, do you know Anderson Tino? He said that, uh,

• 43:41Andrew Santino?

Yeah, he was gonna bring, for those that wanna know, well, it, you know, nobody knows, but he was gonna bring Ty Dolla Sign. He called me, he said, "I'm gonna bring Ty Dolla Sign." And I said, "Bro, we joke, we had a good, one of my favorite jokes from the show, Dave."

• 43:51Speaker 04

Yeah, he said, yeah, he was on Little Dick Show, he called me Todd Dillerson.

• 43:55Andrew Santino?

Yeah, Todd Dillerson. Yeah, yeah. That was one of the best bits we ran on that show was, and I think, I don't know who wrote it. I don't know if Love wrote it, or Vanessa, or Dave. I don't remember who wrote it, but it made me laugh so hard when I read it. I remember reading that shit. And they were like,

• 44:09Speaker 04

These are the worst posters about time.

• 44:11Andrew Santino?

Yeah, they're tiny. Don't worry about them. You can drop it on the table. It's all for style. No, but he, I remember reading it and they were like, um, And they were like, you're, you know, you're at this rap party, you don't know anybody in rap. And when I read Todd Dillerson, my instinct was like, oh, it's like one of the managers? He's like, no, no, no, wait, look. And I was like, alright, he doesn't know that that's Ty Dolla Sign's. So when we did the scene, we were cracking up because I was like, it's Todd Dillerson. He's like, "Who?" I'm like, that's what he said his name was. Todd, Todd, Todd Dillerson. And then he was like, "You're saying Ty Dolla Sign?" And I was like, "That's what his name, that's his name?" It sounded the same to me. I mean, who the fucking cares?

• 44:47Speaker 04

  Todd Dillerson.

• 44:48Andrew Santino?

It is funny. Uh, we had a bunch of rappers on the show and,

• 44:52Speaker 04

I love seeing you in black movies, bro.

• 44:54Andrew Santino?

Uh, dude, I stayed in black movies for a minute. I wanna go back. Black movies!

• 44:57Speaker 04

I just saw you at the house party.

• 44:59Andrew Santino?

House party, yeah. That was one of my favorites too. They let me fly. They literally let me answer the door and go off. They were like, do whatever, you fucking go nuts. Dude, you know what's so funny? Because as a kid, Like Friday was maybe the most quoted movie out of my friends.

• 45:14Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 45:14Andrew Santino?

I mean, we watched that movie, we burned that thing down, we watched it so fucking much. I love that, and I thought, I wanna be one of the white nerds in one of these black movies.

• 45:22Speaker 04

Yeah, like Next Friday, it was, who was it?

• 45:25Andrew Santino?

I love Next Friday. Oh, oh.

• 45:27Speaker 04

  Michael Rapaport.

• 45:28Andrew Santino?

  Yeah, rap, yeah.

• 45:29Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 45:29Andrew Santino?

I just love those movies, cuz they were like so impactful on my youth, and now no one's making fucking comedies anymore, anyway, I mean, unless you're, uh, what's his name? Unless you're doing a Madea movie, or whatever, cuz he's the only one doing these kinda wacky comedies in the black world. And, by the way, the Wayans Brothers, aren't they making Scary is Coming Back, right?

• 45:52Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 45:52Andrew Santino?

I was mad I didn't get a part in that fucking movie.

• 45:54Speaker 04

  Yeah, man, me too.

• 45:55Andrew Santino?

Are you acting? Are you doing a bunch of acting, or not?

• 45:57Speaker 04

Yeah, I mean, I've been trying to get out of stand-up comedy, bro.

• 46:03Andrew Santino?

You want out? You want out?

• 46:05Speaker 04

I don't want out, I would never say that, I don't want the comedy guys to be like, oh, you want out, huh?

• 46:11Andrew Santino?

  Alright, then.

• 46:12Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 46:14Andrew Santino?

  Cancelled!

• 46:14Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 46:15Andrew Santino?

  Get outta here, Renee!

• 46:17Speaker 04

But, uh, I do wanna find another avenue.

• 46:21Andrew Santino?

  You want something different?

• 46:22Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 46:22Andrew Santino?

You can still do both, you can do it all.

• 46:24Speaker 04

But then you hear how much these guys making, and like, damn, I think I should just stick with stand-up.

• 46:28Andrew Santino?

Dude, well nowadays, the world, the acting world is not the same, I mean, you know, you don't most people are kinda fighting to get by, it's a, you know, they used to, I remember in Steve Martin's book, he called his father this stuck with me forever, a plumber actor.

• 46:41Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 46:42Andrew Santino?

Where he was like, I think it was Steve that said that, that's funny, I'm either conflating, it's either Steve said that, or no, no, no, I know who it is, I know who it is, Kurt Russell, he called his dad Bing Russell. Bing Russell was like in a hundred and fifty things, he was in Bonanza for like years.

• 46:58Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 46:58Andrew Santino?

And he called him a plumber actor, and he was like, you know, he just was a go day by day, like, he was like a blue collar worker, cuz back then, they weren't making a lot of money, and then, there was a lot of money in the business, and now it's back to the old days, where people aren't making, no one's making money, unless you're fucking The Rock, Kevin Hart, you know what I mean? Unless you're like one of five guys.

• 47:18Speaker 04

I mean, I like, I don't wanna say the company, but they paid me for an idea that I had, and give me this, we wrote the script with the writer, and Paid me six figures, but nothing happened.

• 47:30Andrew Santino?

Yeah, they go away, they throw them away, yeah.

• 47:31Speaker 04

I'm just like, dude, you just gave me money to have fun?

• 47:34Andrew Santino?

They pay you to throw it away.

• 47:36Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 47:36Andrew Santino?

They don't want to do it.

• 47:37Speaker 04

And now someone has to buy the script from them, and they want to do it, and all these things, and it's just like...

• 47:42Andrew Santino?

  It's a grind.

• 47:43Speaker 04

It's, it's, it's, I mean, but hey, man, you're getting paid to write.

• 47:47Andrew Santino?

No, it's a good life, but it's a good life to be able to have the opportunities that you get.

• 47:50Speaker 04

The rejection is what's hard, I guess.

• 47:52Andrew Santino?

Yeah, because in stand-up, we know how to navigate it. With that stuff, it's annoying, because you're like, what, I thought I did the thing you wanted? Like, in stand-up, you know if it's a good enough joke, they're gonna laugh.

• 48:00Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 48:01Andrew Santino?

In that world, it's like, you know, they said it was great, still didn't like it? I don't understand. Yeah, you'll plug through it. You know what we should do is, we'll, we'll talk off-camera about maybe, uh, having him come aboard the bad, if he's, you know, when you're around. We got a thing that we're doing that I want you to try to be a part of. Come along for the ride. We're gonna wrap it up here, because you've gotta go, uh, to an appointment. This guy, he's got Mr. Appointments all the time.

• 48:24Speaker 04

  Yeah, I do have a two o'clock.

• 48:26Andrew Santino?

He's got an appointment. So, hey, do this, uh, go see Renee live. Uh, he's sold out in Vegas already, and this episode's already out by the time that Vegas happens. Go see him on tour, uh...

• 48:36Speaker 04

I'll see you in Vegas, man.

• 48:37Andrew Santino?

I'll see you in Vegas, yeah, I'll hit you when I get there. What is it, uh, Renee Vaca?

• 48:41Speaker 04

Renee Vaca Comedy on all platforms, man, and, uh, you know, shout out to Andrew for having me, man.

• 48:47Andrew Santino?

You're the man. ReneevacaComedy.com. Look into that camera, we end the episode the same way. You say one word or one phrase to close out the episode. A piece of advice, a phrase, or just one word.

• 48:57Speaker 04

I'm gonna say a piece of advice.

• 48:59Andrew Santino?

  Okay, okay.

• 49:00Speaker 04

If you're in a relationship, and you know it's about to end, but it's not ending, just end it.

• 49:09Speaker 04

You're saving yourself time, you could die tomorrow, man. I had my best friend for two years. Rest in peace, Ken Flores. And a year of that was... I didn't, for one of those years, I didn't get to see him that much, because I was with a toxic woman.

• 49:25Speaker 04

  So, leave that bitch.
