Squirkle jerk. I've noticed that Mercedes S-Class coupes have depreciated into the $30,000 to $40,000 range. Is this a steal considering these were six figures or does the maintenance make them a no-go? Which would be a more interesting daily driver? Magnus's high mileage turbo or the one I just sold, the mint green over tan? What's a car everyone else seems to love that you cannot get on board with and why? What's up everybody? Welcome to the Smoking Tire Podcast. Today's episode is, as always, brought to you by Off the Record. We love Off the Record. I hope I don't need Off the Record. While you're hearing this show, I'm off on a road and track event in a 740 horsepower

• 0:42Matt Farah?

Bentley. And my friend just asked me today, "How do you drive this car without going to jail?" I said, "It's a two-tiered strategy. One, I have my Valentine 1 going, I have Waze going, and then if that technology collaboration fails me, I have Off the Record. I've got the app on my phone. You get the app on your phone. Download it. Use code TSTPOD when you set up an account, or go to offtherecord.com/tst." And they will set you up. If you get a ticket, all you gotta do is snap a photo of that ticket, snap a scan of that ticket, send it to Off the Record. They will connect you with a qualified attorney that will fight

that ticket in the jurisdiction where you got pulled over. They are lifesavers, folks. Even when you're on the side of the road and the cop is writing that ticket, normally you're mad stressed. Off the Record keeps you calm because you know you've got someone in your corner. It's like, "Don't even worry about it. They're going to handle it." Download the app. Use code TSTPOD, T-S-T-P-O-D. 10% off all legal services booked through Off the Record. Same if you use that link, offtherecord.com/tst. We love them. Podcast. We have an update from an engineer about a problem with gauge clusters. I have been driving the extremely fast and extremely expensive Bentley GT Speed Hybrid. Also learned something about what makes a stereo sound British. All of this and more on today's episode of the Smoking Tire Podcast. Let's go. And if you love the show, please give us a rating or a review. It helps us grow. Tested and approved. Kid tested, mother approved.

• 2:47Matt Farah?

What would be our version of kid tested, mother approved?

• 2:49Speaker 01

  The car version?

• 2:50Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:53Speaker 01

What was it? What was the kid tested, mother approved about? It was like a food, right?

• 2:56Matt Farah?

  That would be like.

• 2:57Speaker 01

Kids like it, moms think it's good for you.

• 2:59Matt Farah?

This is gonna sound kinda sexist, but it would be like, you know, race car driver tested, wife approved. You know what I mean? Something like that.

• 3:08Speaker 01

Kid tested. Uh, you know what it would be?

• 3:10Matt Farah?

Kid tested, cause like something that the primary.

• 3:13Speaker 01

  Better tires.

• 3:14Matt Farah?

  Something, yeah.

• 3:15Speaker 01

Like I bought PS4s and like.

• 3:17Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 3:17Speaker 01

  Kids like them.

• 3:18Matt Farah?

  It'll make us safer.

• 3:18Speaker 01

  Make it safer.

• 3:19Matt Farah?

  Make us safer.

• 3:20Speaker 01

Or like, a lot of people out there have sold their spouse on brakes or tires saying it's for safety.

• 3:25Matt Farah?

Right. Yeah. What are you against? Safety?

• 3:28Speaker 01

No, no, honey, it makes it a lot safer.

• 3:30Matt Farah?

  You're pro death.

• 3:31Speaker 01

Someone, remember someone in our, one of our Patreons on the last show asked, what suspension should I put on my Volkswagen?

• 3:38Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 3:39Speaker 01

And he's like, I'm justifying it to the wife by saying it's for safety, which is.

• 3:43Matt Farah?

There's an argument there. I mean, well, no, I mean, like if KW, let's say KW put up a slalom and it could do, you know, four mile an hour quicker in the slalom, you could go, you know, the moose test, I could do at a, at a higher speed.

• 3:57Speaker 01

  Right.

• 3:57Matt Farah?

  In my Jetta.

• 3:58Speaker 01

Honey, if the moose jumps out, we don't have to slow down as much, which means we won't be late to something.

• 4:03Matt Farah?

Yeah. Yeah, mods that you have to justify. I mean, tires for sure, brakes for sure.

• 4:13Matt Farah?

What else could you do to a car and tell, and under the guise of safety? You could argue that loud pipes save lives bullshit.

• 4:21Speaker 01

Man, yeah, but I, like, someone was driving on the freeway this morning at 7:00 a.m. I was walking the dog, and I heard a gunshot tune from the 90, which is four blocks from my house. And Tucker thought it was a firework and wanted to pull me home. Like, they're just so dumb.

• 4:36Matt Farah?

Because of the way, the direction the wind blows and the direction from my house to the 90, you know, every time someone does a four-gear pull getting onto that bitch, I can hear it.

• 4:49Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 4:49Matt Farah?

  And it's, uh, often.

• 4:51Speaker 01

  Yes, it is.

• 4:52Matt Farah?

It's, you've hung out in my backyard, it's like multiple times an hour that you hear a leader bike or a trio of Hellcats, you know, doing...

• 5:03Speaker 01

I think there's a lot of motorcycle, not racing, but enthusiasts that join the freeway together.

• 5:10Matt Farah?

Well, look, I mean, not that I'm encouraging this, but like, if you wanted somewhere to do a four-gear pull within the city of Los Angeles, your options are extremely limited.

• 5:23Speaker 01

  Very true.

• 5:24Matt Farah?

But a highway that connects two places that didn't need connecting with a highway is a great place to do that. I mean...

• 5:34Speaker 01

And there's only two places the police sit. And if you know where they both are, you can plan accordingly. It's very true.

• 5:39Matt Farah?

And the highway is, how long is the 90? I don't know, three miles?

• 5:42Speaker 01

  Maybe.

• 5:43Matt Farah?

Maybe three miles? So like, you could just go, it's end to end. And so like, I'm just pointing out what already exists. I'm not suggesting anyone do anything.

• 5:54Speaker 01

I understand why the sound comes from that direction.

• 5:57Matt Farah?

  Yeah, it carries.

• 5:57Speaker 01

I've made the sounds there myself.

• 5:58Matt Farah?

Yeah, occasionally, once in a while.

• 6:00Speaker 01

Are you in my camera slightly right?

• 6:02Matt Farah?

Oh, boy, it's limping. Oh, not limping, it's just hanging.

• 6:05Speaker 01

  There you go.

• 6:05Matt Farah?

It's also limping, but it was, it was hanging a little to the left as well. Right, oh, well, welcome to the program. Better late than never, Sunday afternoon.

• 6:15Speaker 01

You were Bentleying with Christian, you were starting to say.

• 6:18Matt Farah?

Double, I've, Hannah pointed out something, that we are very likely the only house anywhere, right now, that has two Bentleys and an Oscar Mayer Wienermobile in their driveway.

• 6:34Matt Farah?

Even a toy one, in the world.

• 6:36Speaker 01

  Probably.

• 6:37Matt Farah?

  Who else has that?

• 6:38Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 6:39Matt Farah?

Totally unique, we have it. And it's very fun.

• 6:43Speaker 01

The Winter of the Mobile is fun in there. And it prepares you slightly for your wife's interest in hot dogs.

• 6:50Matt Farah?

  For what you're gonna...

• 6:50Speaker 01

  But under prepares you.

• 6:52Matt Farah?

  Nothing could prepare you.

• 6:53Speaker 01

You go, "Oh, they like that."

• 6:54Matt Farah?

You know where it comes from? Hannah's Aunt Liz, who you may have met at some point. Aunt Liz rules.

• 6:59Speaker 01

  She's the fun one, yeah.

• 7:00Matt Farah?

She's the fun one, right. Their house, she's a collector, not hoarder. She would be a hoarder, but she has made enough money in her career to have daily cleaning ladies, which is the antidote, unfortunately, for... But like, she has like, her whole walls are covered in food-related toys and like dolls.

• 7:21Speaker 01

  Ah.

• 7:22Matt Farah?

  The whole place.

• 7:23Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 7:23Matt Farah?

Huge place, too. Just... It's not like on the floor, it's not untidy, it's very organized, but it is a collection.

• 7:32Speaker 01

The difference, I think, between hoarding and collecting is shells. Right, without shells, it's all on the ground. Shells and dusting, yeah.

• 7:39Matt Farah?

That's about it, yeah. And like, some type of organization or rationale for the accumulating of stuff.

• 7:48Speaker 01

Well, I think both groups can have that, hoarding or collecting. Rational is not in short supply with the hoarders.

• 7:56Matt Farah?

  Right, right, but like...

• 7:57Speaker 01

  Is it logical? Maybe not.

• 7:58Matt Farah?

And maybe, I mean, I'm sure there's a lot I don't know about hoarders, but from what I've seen on the show, hoarders, it doesn't seem like there's a lot of thought put into what's being and where it's, you know what I mean?

• 8:12Speaker 01

I think there's a lot of thinking, but not a lot of thought, yeah.

• 8:17Matt Farah?

They've done a lot of their own research.

• 8:19Speaker 01

Exactly. You ask him why there's so many newspapers, he has a lot of reasons.

• 8:22Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 8:24Speaker 01

  But they're not thought out.

• 8:25Matt Farah?

Right. So, but anyway, yes, I've been rolling two Bentleys this weekend, which is gluttonous and ridiculous.

• 8:35Matt Farah?

And uh but it's funny about like the stuff that's like the same about them. Like they the the air vents and the plunger things. I that I don't even think that part is like changed. Like it it might be changed because like the resistance to how it moves like the actual like.

• 8:52Speaker 01

Which one is it easier in?

• 8:54Matt Farah?

It's a little it's smoother like it has like a some kind of beautiful, brand new, lubricated. Thing in the new one that provides like this the cor- this amazing amount of the correct resistance to motion.

• 9:08Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 9:09Matt Farah?

But like the the the part shape and size and look of the parts are like exactly the same. It's like, cool that there's a through line like that.

• 9:16Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:18Matt Farah?

And uh it's the same, they both have this sort of like. Engine sound that is somewhere between train and ship. Like you can tell there's an engine making power at a baritone level. Somewhere. You're not sure where it is, doesn't really matter. But just like so much power comes out of it that you never have to use more than like a third throttle ever. And uh just goes.

• 9:50Matt Farah?

  From somewhere.

• 9:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:51Matt Farah?

  You know.

• 9:51Speaker 01

  The locomotive's up there.

• 9:53Matt Farah?

  Somewhere distant.

• 9:53Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:54Matt Farah?

Yeah, like you've been in a cruise ship?

• 9:55Speaker 01

No, but I know I know what you mean.

• 9:57Matt Farah?

  It's like that.

• 9:57Speaker 01

There's a thrum somewhere down in the boat.

• 9:59Matt Farah?

Somewhere there is a very powerful engine moving this very heavy thing and I couldn't tell you where it is.

• 10:06Speaker 01

In the train you're taking, the luxury train type thing. Are the nice cars toward the back or the front of the train? Do you know?

• 10:13Matt Farah?

You I think they're in the back.

• 10:17Speaker 01

For is that further furthest away from the locomotive maybe?

• 10:21Matt Farah?

Probably, I I I'm not sure. You know what's funny, the the booking lady, because this thing, this fucking thing, the train is so Canadian. You can only book it by phone. Like you get all the way as far as you can go to the website and then it's like, hmm, call our agent. So Canadian.

• 10:38Matt Farah?

But she asked, do you want to be in the front, the middle, or the back? And I said, of the train or the car? And, and do we have this conversation already? I feel like I've had, maybe it was with Hannah, okay. So she goes, train or car? And I said, train or car? And she goes, car. And I go, well, what's the difference? And she goes, I'm not, nothing really. And I go, well, then why'd you even ask? And she goes, well, people that really do this, you know, it's like, it's like front of the roller coaster, back of the roller coaster. And I go, yeah, but the front of the roller coaster and the back of the roller coaster, that would be like being in different cars. Like, that's, that is a different experience, actually. Being in the same, how could there be a different experience in the same car?

• 11:23Matt Farah?

And then she started talking about like, more people would be walking past your room, which I don't know, maybe is bothersome or something, but...

• 11:30Speaker 01

So maybe if, I guess, if there's a bathroom in each car...

• 11:35Matt Farah?

There's a bathroom in each room.

• 11:37Speaker 01

Oh, well, okay. Then I don't know, then I feel like the number of traffic past you...

• 11:40Matt Farah?

There is a hallway, like, people will walk past your room to get to other cars. Like, that's how fucking trains work.

• 11:45Speaker 01

I wonder if it matters if you're above the axles or in the middle? Like, do you feel the little gung gung?

• 11:49Matt Farah?

Oh, that's kind of interesting. I haven't thought about that. Train nerds, tell me why it matters.

• 11:54Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 11:55Matt Farah?

I'm in, uh, I'm in, uh, I just said, I said, I don't know, middle. Can't go wrong with middle, right?

• 12:03Speaker 01

Who knows? The train nerds are gonna let us know. And they're gonna be like, oh, you fucked up. You're in the middle?

• 12:07Matt Farah?

Well, if you're gonna ride a new roller coaster, middle's a good move.

• 12:10Speaker 01

I like the back. You get the whip.

• 12:12Matt Farah?

I like the back as well. But I usually, if given the opportunity, will go middle, back, front. In order of riding. Assuming I have the opportunity.

• 12:20Speaker 01

Why do you like middle before the back?

• 12:21Matt Farah?

It gives me the pure, the intent. The designer's intent.

• 12:26Speaker 01

  What?

• 12:27Matt Farah?

Like, it's the, it's the middle. So it's like, as, it's the closest without the whip or without the hang. It's, it's the middle experience. You know what I mean?

• 12:35Speaker 01

  You really love mid-engine cars.

• 12:38Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 12:39Speaker 01

That's, you're like, it's their intent. I think their intent is for the thing to make it back to the beginning.

• 12:43Matt Farah?

Yeah, to not die. Start, yeah. No, but like, you know what I mean? The front, it, you get the hang.

• 12:46Speaker 01

  Right.

• 12:47Matt Farah?

Where it hangs over the top, and in the back, you get the whip, also fun. The middle being in between that is...

• 12:53Speaker 01

You get a little of the pull, but not, alright.

• 12:55Matt Farah?

You get to experience both in equal measure.

• 12:57Speaker 01

  There's no wrong answer.

• 12:58Matt Farah?

  Of course not.

• 12:59Speaker 01

  Totally subjective.

• 13:00Matt Farah?

If I could only do one, if you could only do one, if the line was very long...

• 13:04Speaker 01

Gun your head, where, which seat would you take?

• 13:06Matt Farah?

  Front.

• 13:07Speaker 01

Or if you were at the front of the line, which seat would you take?

• 13:09Matt Farah?

  Front, I, I, I think the hang is a good time. That's a good...

• 13:13Speaker 01

You're like, waiting for the whoo?

• 13:14Matt Farah?

I like the, I like the extra second hang. I think that's a good time.

• 13:18Speaker 01

You're the beginning of the momentum.

• 13:19Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 13:20Speaker 01

  That drags everyone else down.

• 13:21Matt Farah?

Yeah. Um, but, speaking of trains, the, the, this Bentley, it's the hybrid one, we had it for Performance Car of the Year, but it's, it's, it's $406,000. It has $100,000 of options on it.

• 13:38Matt Farah?

Although, like, one is like the first edition pack, and that's $50,000.

• 13:44Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 13:44Matt Farah?

I could not tell you what's in that. And, and honestly, because I have the car for weeks and I just haven't, like, looked yet. But the other one I drove, the Performance Car of the Year, also had the first edition pack, so it's not like there's a difference between the two. I don't fucking know. It's 50 grand, though. And then, that satin-orange paint, it's 3,500 because it's orange, and then 22,000 because it's satin. So it's a 25,000 dollar paint job. So, $75,000 is, is of that. Then you have a blackout trim, um, you have the, uh, the, uh, carbon dash, um, and there was a couple of other,

• 14:28Matt Farah?

you know, color, painted this, blah, blah, blah, nothing like, oh, oh, ceramic brakes, $18,000 for ceramic brakes, which, thank god I have, yeah.

• 14:37Speaker 01

Man, I remember when those were nine grand.

• 14:39Matt Farah?

On a fucking Porsche, they still are. This is, the, have you seen the size of these? They're the same as the ones on the Urus. They're enormous.

• 14:46Speaker 01

How much is that brake package on the Urus?

• 14:48Matt Farah?

Probably that much. It might be standard. I think, I don't think you can get an Urus without ceramic brakes. But uh, yeah, and then there was uh, the most, the best value in Bentley today, I think we've said it before. The floating center caps, $700.

• 15:06Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 15:07Matt Farah?

That is the best, that's the best value in the Bentley option list.

• 15:10Speaker 01

  That's a cool trick.

• 15:10Matt Farah?

100% should get. It's fun to go brrrr and spin them once you park.

• 15:15Speaker 01

And it's fun to know, I mean, you don't know they're, they're not spinning when you're driving.

• 15:18Matt Farah?

The car looks so dope in car to car.

• 15:21Speaker 01

No, of course it does. But you don't, we don't often see our own car in car to car. We do, but other people don't. But you know that it's there. Yeah, that's cool.

• 15:28Matt Farah?

It's a good treat. What a delightful machine, though.

• 15:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 15:31Matt Farah?

  And uh.

• 15:32Speaker 01

  They're amazing.

• 15:32Matt Farah?

  Huh? Yeah.

• 15:33Speaker 01

They're amazing. The last one we drove, I was so impressed.

• 15:36Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 15:36Speaker 01

  So impressed.

• 15:37Matt Farah?

And this one, I let both Gibran and Christian drive it. Uh, I don't know if I've talked about Gibran before. He's a photographer, and he's a good dude, and he stays with us when he comes to LA, because he lives in New Orleans. And a lot of times, he'll get a little taste of whatever's in the garage. And he drove the Bentley, he'd never driven one. Um, he came back and he goes, "I didn't know cars could be that good." He's like, "I've never seen anything like that." And Christian, you know, basically said the same thing. We went up to Malibu today. Um, was popping off at the old place. Wow. Took like 40 minutes to get coffee.

• 16:11Speaker 01

  And it was hot today.

• 16:12Matt Farah?

  It was hot.

• 16:13Speaker 01

It's like, it's, it's August weather, or September weather.

• 16:17Matt Farah?

You know what? We had a, we had a fucking rough week all around, but like, going up the hill in a good car and like, looking down at the ocean's like, you know what? We're, we're in the right place here, so.

• 16:28Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 16:30Matt Farah?

Goddamn, that car is, it's a real treat, though. Um, we'll have to get another one, because this one's actually not gonna come back with me from Arizona, unfortunately. And you should, you should go.

• 16:41Speaker 01

What's crazy about the paint, real quick, is when I, you know, I'm getting the car wrapped in, it's because painting my car would be too expensive. And I asked our friend at Ovis, like, "Hey Ballpark, what would it cost to paint my car?" Like, to paint it well.

• 16:51Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 16:52Speaker 01

And he's like, "15 to 20." And now, obviously Bentley's making a profit and they have R&D to do, but they also just get the raw panels. They don't have to take the whole thing apart. Like, that's part of the cost, a lot of the cost of doing a new paint job on a car. is taking off every panel, every trim piece, every little thing and then painting correctly.

• 17:10Matt Farah?

No, this is just to make it satin.

• 17:12Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 17:12Matt Farah?

That's twenty-two grand to make it satin. I mean, in fairness, it probably can't be painted in their standard booth, right? It's probably gotta be painted somewhere else. So there's gotta be some call, either they have a separate booth that's like smaller, that's just for satin. It's probably done by hand, you know, and the QC is probably crazy. There's probably a bunch of fucking reject and like, I'm sure there's, there is, I'm sure if I ask Bentley, which I, I'll, I'll send them an email. Why, where does, what is the process of satin paint?

• 17:44Matt Farah?

I think what's interesting about satin paint though is like, it's actually held up better. Like if you go look at like an E92 M3 or one of those Mercedes, like

• 17:54Speaker 01

  The early ones?

• 17:54Matt Farah?

If they were taken like reasonably good care of, the paint has actually been held up pretty good. Like in the beginning, we're like, oh, this is gonna look like shit in five years.

• 18:02Speaker 01

Well, cause the maintenance requirements were very different.

• 18:04Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 18:04Speaker 01

And so if you buy the car, if you bought the car and not read or been briefed on how to wash it.

• 18:09Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 18:09Speaker 01

You would fuck it up real fast. So that's why we were like, what? You can't just wash it with a sock, but.

• 18:15Matt Farah?

My Hannah's friend just bought a fucking, a Kia that with matte paint. And like, like bought it, it's like the, the EV nine, that's the big three where you bought it. And then they were like, do you want to do this? And she was like, yeah, that was cool. Okay. Got it with matte paint. And this is just like, not a car enthusiast, just like a mom of two, you know? And not to like, you know, reduce her existence to that, but it's just like Hannah's friend from work. Point being they, when they deliver her the EV nine, they give her like a basket of like stuff. And she's like, oh, well, what's this? And they're like, this is the stuff you have to use to keep the matte paint.

• 18:57Speaker 01

  Oh, no.

• 18:58Matt Farah?

And she was like, what do you mean? And they're like, you can't, you know, you can't use wax, you can't do this, you can't. And she's like, what? And they didn't, no one explained this to her before she took this car.

• 19:10Speaker 01

  That sucks.

• 19:11Matt Farah?

  She's like, I don't want that. Like that's.

• 19:13Speaker 01

Did you return it? Did you do that?

• 19:15Matt Farah?

Folks, we gotta take one quick break from the action for Delete Me. I signed up for Delete Me. They hooked it up, I signed up, I put in all my information. It took me about 15 minutes to probably put in all my information on Delete Me. And, uh, man, when I tell you what they found. Delete Me is a money, money thing to have, particularly right now. We're so online, we're buying stuff online. Our, uh, address, our phone number, our, uh, credit card information, our birthdays. We need all this stuff to bring the convenience of online shopping and online services into our homes. But you can also be the product, right?

• 19:55Matt Farah?

These data brokers are buying, uh, your personal data and then selling it to other people. And then you end up with robo calls, spam, phishing, even identity theft. It's a big problem, but now you can protect that privacy with Delete Me. I signed up for Delete Me and it took a few days, actually. I didn't, I knew it wasn't gonna be like a, like a right away thing. But a few days later, they were like, they sent me an email and it said, okay, I logged in. And they found like a thousand instances of my name, address, phone number. I mean, for the good news, it was like, it was actually mostly old addresses and old phone numbers

• 20:35Matt Farah?

that I don't use anymore, but it was still out there and they got it taken out of those data, data broker websites. It's, it was like very, very easy, totally straightforward. I told them what to look for on the internet and they found it. And then they regularly update me with more stuff they find. It's an ongoing solution. And so we've got a discount code for you. Go to joindelete.me.com/tire. Use promo code tire for 20% off. That's joindelete.me.com/tire. Use promo code tire, 20% off. Get your data off the internet with Delete Me. It is a great thing.

• 21:18Matt Farah?

Help keep you, uh, private and sane. And now back to the show.

• 21:25Speaker 01

Did you return it? You do that?

• 21:26Matt Farah?

I, I think, huh? I think she, uh, I think she, because she like literally hadn't left the, the dealership at all yet. I think they were like, okay, and they got her and it was.

• 21:36Speaker 01

Oh, okay. It wasn't like a custom ordered type thing?

• 21:38Matt Farah?

No, no, no. No, it was like, she bought it off this.

• 21:41Speaker 01

That's a discussion that needs to be had upfront.

• 21:42Matt Farah?

I mean, is it? Wait, what?

• 21:45Speaker 01

Was it an option? Like was it more expensive and the dealership was trying to you know scoop that in?

• 21:49Matt Farah?

I didn't get the details of it. The I think it was like she either she just saw it there and was like what about that one? Or they said, hey, you could whatever.

• 21:57Speaker 01

  Right.

• 21:57Matt Farah?

I don't know, but that's the bottom line is she was not educated.

• 22:01Speaker 01

Right. It takes requires special care still, even what 20 years after Ken Block did the matte black like it's still requires special care.

• 22:08Matt Farah?

Yeah, but in the beginning I was like, I wouldn't even get like, I wouldn't get like an exotic car or anything in a matte paint, but like now I would.

• 22:15Speaker 01

It looks cool. I think it does a good job of showing off curves and things and it because it dampens like reflection.

• 22:20Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 22:20Speaker 01

Sometimes bright sun will almost wash out the the curve or shape of a car and it actually works for it.

• 22:26Matt Farah?

But the thing about this Bentley, we were talking about this a lot this morning, it's it's 400 grand, which is an insane amount of money. I mean, and it's and it's a little different from something like a GT3 or GT3 RS where it there's not a lot of people for who this is like their dream car and they're going to save up for this. And it's not, you know, even in something so expensive, like they're not great investments.

• 22:50Speaker 01

  Right.

• 22:51Matt Farah?

They depreciate, whatever. Okay. So the person who's spending 400 grand on this like has to be rich enough or this is just their car.

• 23:00Speaker 01

Yeah, this is not a car that goes in the collection. It's to drive it to the collection.

• 23:03Matt Farah?

Yeah, which is a crazy like weird thing to think about because it's like, you know, I was like, you know, LeBron was like, you know, because he was out with us when we did the 911 ST versus GT3. And I let him get a little taste of the ST. And so he was like, if I could get one of those, I would find a way to like move money around and save up and do this and do that. You know, and it would be like my special thing. He's like, but I couldn't do that with this. This would just be like my car, which means I have to be comfortable with like losing like a quarter mil in depreciation in three years on my daily.

• 23:40Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 23:40Matt Farah?

You know, which is crazy. He's like, on the other hand, what do 2019s go for?

• 23:45Speaker 01

A lot less than the new ones.

• 23:46Matt Farah?

  A lot less.

• 23:47Speaker 01

Yeah, very true. I mean, if you if you had one of the ones we drove a few years ago, ooh, that's a lot of car.

• 23:51Matt Farah?

  Tons.

• 23:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 23:52Matt Farah?

Tons, but the ma- the maintenance costs are very Very expensive, you know, once they get out of warranty and stuff, but fuck me, do they drive good? Every like, pick a thing, doesn't, pick anything and it's in like the top 20% of all cars on the road in any of those things.

• 24:08Speaker 01

That's what's incredible is they, we've run out of compromise, I mean, like money and technology finally caught up and delivers everything you want. Cause remember the fast Bentleys of the 90s and early 2000s?

• 24:19Matt Farah?

Remember, like, do I remember the Bentleys of the 90s? Yes.

• 24:23Speaker 01

Yeah, like, very good point, yeah, like lots of lean, you know, one leg or like burnout, all that stuff.

• 24:29Matt Farah?

Luxury first, yeah, luxury first. Now you can have both and a bunch of people commented on my Instagram like, bet the old one rides better, like, no, it doesn't. No, the old one rides great, but it doesn't, it doesn't have the kind of, fucking go get him, copper. He doesn't have, it doesn't have the body control of, of this, which is just extraordinary.

• 24:47Speaker 01

And the wheel control, like the old Bentley might be soft, but the control of the wheel speed these days is incredible.

• 24:53Matt Farah?

Yeah, I mean, you can, you can flick a knob and it has significantly better ride quality than my car and you can flick a knob the other way. And you can drift it on a racetrack and laugh your ass off, you know, or tear up a mountain or something and it's, it's just kind of like, does everything so well, it's crazy. Very nice thing.

• 25:14Speaker 01

They're incredible. What a good road trip car, perfect.

• 25:16Matt Farah?

And I don't, um, you know, it's the same powertrain functionally as the Cayenne we just had, you know, more or less, it's that same setup. But I, the rest of the car is so special that I don't feel like the same way I feel about the Cayenne where it's like skip the turbo and just get the V6 because you're in electric all the time. I think the experience of driving this in both modes is just more special all around.

• 25:40Speaker 01

Well, were you more encouraged to drive this fast than the Cayenne? I think that, the thing with the Cayenne for me is I felt like I was in a fancy dentist office or something like that. I just, I was not encouraged to try to go fast.

• 25:52Matt Farah?

Right, it's, it's an SUV, who gives a shit? Like in this, going fast is actually a good time, so, um, which is amazing because the early Continentals going fast was like not that fun. Now like this is, this thing's a riot. And the fucking massage seats.

• 26:08Speaker 01

How many miles are you doing it? Like 1200?

• 26:11Matt Farah?

Yeah, probably. They gave it to me with 740 miles on it.

• 26:15Speaker 01

  You're the break in.

• 26:16Matt Farah?

I'm going, I'm going straight to Arizona and doing a track day.

• 26:20Speaker 01

That well, it's a break in a thousand miles. And you'll you'll hit a thousand when you get there. Wow.

• 26:24Matt Farah?

  We'll hit it. Yeah.

• 26:26Speaker 01

  And it's ready. That's cool.

• 26:28Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 26:28Speaker 01

  That'd be fun.

• 26:29Matt Farah?

And speaking of miles, I hit 20 I hit 20K on the way back from Good Vibes in the NSX. Got to 20,000 miles. So I put 2,600 miles on it in a year and a half. So I I think I'm doing my part. I think I'm doing my part to not be a bitch about the miles.

• 26:46Speaker 01

  Well, yeah.

• 26:47Matt Farah?

That's about as many miles as I could put on anything.

• 26:49Speaker 01

Cause you drive so many other things that get in the way.

• 26:51Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 26:52Speaker 01

Then yeah, that's a pretty good chunk.

• 26:53Matt Farah?

  Miles.

• 26:54Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 26:55Matt Farah?

It was so nice. It was better on Angeles Crest than I thought it would be.

• 26:59Speaker 01

Oh, have you not driven it since the new suspension?

• 27:01Matt Farah?

No, no, I haven't driven it since, uh, yeah, like in a while, and it was really, really, really nice.

• 27:06Speaker 01

  They're such good cars.

• 27:07Matt Farah?

There. And all these other NSXs came out. Uh, I put a picture up on Instagram, this white one. Now, they had nothing to do with me, just like they happened to be there. Go to go to the couple, this one on this white one. And, um, this white one was ridiculous. That one, which I think it was a 2000, but it has a twin turbo kit on it, which is really cool with air to water intercooler, which is excellent. Uh, the wheels are really nice. And then click one over to the the interior. I was like, I was in love with the interior.

• 27:43Speaker 01

  Oxalate seats, fixed back.

• 27:45Matt Farah?

So these are Recaro pole position. Something, some letter combination. They're the wider ones. I sat in them and I was like, game changer. But apparently they're, obviously they're so expensive. I can't, I I cannot bring myself to buy them.

• 28:00Speaker 01

  Really? Cause your seats.

• 28:03Matt Farah?

They're stock. They're the stock seats. So whatever.

• 28:05Speaker 01

But like, you said, I even me, who's shorter than you, like I sit so high in the NSX. One of my only complaints.

• 28:10Matt Farah?

This is so much lower. I have a inch of clearance above my head with these seats.

• 28:15Speaker 01

So how long before you ordered these seats? Christmas time just after? I mean, I'm just nudging.

• 28:19Matt Farah?

We need to not be spending money on cars right now, but it is definitely something to consider, as was the Zenardi short shift kit. Was was excellent feeling.

• 28:29Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 28:29Matt Farah?

This was a really good car. If I was, uh, if I was in the tuning mood with the NSX, I would basically repeat.

• 28:36Speaker 01

Now, would you like having a fixed backseat like this versus the one, yours are adjustable? Do you ever adjust them?

• 28:41Matt Farah?

  No.

• 28:42Speaker 01

So, so these would work for you?

• 28:43Matt Farah?

Yeah, I'm, I love these seats. These, these are very, very comfortable. They're the same seats I had in the Mustang, just covered in really nice leather.

• 28:50Speaker 01

Oh, okay. You've had these before.

• 28:52Matt Farah?

Yeah, and I put that Cholo fabric on it. It was fun, but I don't think it, the NSX, can you do a Cholo fabric on that?

• 28:59Speaker 01

  Uh.

• 29:00Matt Farah?

  I don't think you can.

• 29:02Speaker 01

I think anyone can do whatever they want.

• 29:03Matt Farah?

Yeah, I know, but like, what, what's, what, you'd have to do some sort of a style thing.

• 29:08Speaker 01

I mean, you could do some sort of JDM, or something from Japan, like you do something like that, yeah.

• 29:14Matt Farah?

I had a thought this morning. What if you got a Coogee sweater? Like the one I have from my Biggie costume, which is the actual, the actual Coogee sweater, the same one Biggie wore in the photo? What if I cut that and made a Coogee seat centers?

• 29:33Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 29:33Matt Farah?

I think it'd be pretty fun.

• 29:34Speaker 01

Yeah, I think, for the Bentley? Or for this?

• 29:38Matt Farah?

No, for, for something like this.

• 29:39Speaker 01

I think it makes more sense in the Bentley, because it's Biggie.

• 29:42Matt Farah?

  Oh, in the Bentley?

• 29:43Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 29:43Matt Farah?

Oh, I don't want to cut up the interior of the Bentley. That's, that's not, putting Coogee inserts in Bentley would be so boss, but it would tank the resale value.

• 29:53Speaker 01

  Oh, that's true.

• 29:54Matt Farah?

  Further than it already is.

• 29:58Matt Farah?

Although, like, I would, I definitely, I love what Chris did with that M5, though. The corduroy? God, is that good? Yeah. No, but I was thinking, I'm thinking just for silly, for silliness, if I was to get a pair of bucket seats.

• 30:11Speaker 01

I think you can do whatever, because if you like the Coogee thing and you've had those sweaters, and if you don't wear it,

• 30:15Matt Farah?

  I don't wear it.

• 30:16Speaker 01

Then you just cut it up, sure.

• 30:19Matt Farah?

It'd be a funny seat inserts. I've never seen Coogee seat inserts before.

• 30:24Speaker 01

I didn't know what Coogee was until knowing you.

• 30:27Matt Farah?

  Yeah, it's an Australian brand.

• 30:29Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 30:29Matt Farah?

Yeah, even though it's mostly associated with like rappers and stuff.

• 30:33Speaker 01

Mm-hmm. And they have like, it's got like stuff all over it.

• 30:36Matt Farah?

Yeah, they're like woven, hand woven with like crazy colors and stuff. They're fun as fuck.

• 30:40Speaker 01

Be interesting to see how that would wear out, like, you know, I mean, you don't drive it that much.

• 30:46Matt Farah?

You wouldn't put it in the daily.

• 30:47Speaker 01

Right, because then it would just grab these different pieces of yarn and pull it apart like a cat.

• 30:51Matt Farah?

  Would not be good, no.

• 30:52Speaker 01

I started looking at, uh, I'm gonna do, you know, finally gonna do the interior A, B, C pillars. And I was like, ooh, I can do like a fun fabric. So I looked up tartans.

• 31:03Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 31:04Speaker 01

And I was not prepared for the number of different types of patterns there are that come from a single tartan company in Scotland.

• 31:11Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 31:12Speaker 01

And so I'm gonna try and get some swatches to match the rap thing. It's very cool, like on B pillars.

• 31:16Matt Farah?

Get ready for Andy from Spirit of Le Mans to dive bomb in right now.

• 31:21Speaker 01

  Alright.

• 31:21Matt Farah?

He's a listener and he sells tartan in Scotland. And he will send you, he's asking me all the time, do I want some tartan? And I very rarely have anything to do with more tartan, so I politely turned him down. But, uh, he will send you all the goddamn tartans. He'll send you a fucking huge roll of that shit.

• 31:41Speaker 01

There are like hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of different kinds.

• 31:44Matt Farah?

And tartan shopping in Scotland is mad fun.

• 31:47Speaker 01

  I'm sure.

• 31:47Matt Farah?

It's like their thing. Yeah, yeah, it's great.

• 31:50Speaker 01

I mean, have you ever gone to the fabric district in LA to buy a fabric?

• 31:53Matt Farah?

  Extremely too much.

• 31:54Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 31:55Matt Farah?

Yeah, narrow it down to three.

• 31:56Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 31:58Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 31:58Speaker 01

So I'm gonna shop for those.

• 31:59Matt Farah?

Even when, uh, when we did the Manks interior, they had like four or five out. And one of the ones that we chose was one that was out. And then they like opened this drawer and there's like 500 more. And I'm like, close that!

• 32:08Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 32:08Matt Farah?

  I don't even wanna know that's there.

• 32:10Speaker 01

  Yeah, buyers remorse, remorse immediately.

• 32:12Matt Farah?

Let's just, you know, they mocked up one of the interiors with the bus fabric, the leftover bus fabric from the safari. It looked incredible on the seat, but you'd have to get a different exterior color. And we didn't wanna, we'd have to get like a, like a purple, like, like a Bachmann purple.

• 32:29Speaker 01

Uh, cause what's the exterior color you're doing?

• 32:32Matt Farah?

  Sapphire blue.

• 32:33Speaker 01

  Yeah, lighter.

• 32:33Matt Farah?

Stratosphere blue, excuse me, stratosphere blue. It's like, it's like sky blue with bass boat flake in it.

• 32:38Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 32:39Matt Farah?

  It's fucking sick.

• 32:40Speaker 01

Yeah, the bus fabric wouldn't work.

• 32:41Matt Farah?

Yeah. Um, dude, uh, you know who hit me up is our pal David Twig.

• 32:49Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 32:49Matt Farah?

Writer for the intercooler, uh, product manager for cars, uh.

• 32:54Speaker 01

  Alpine.

• 32:54Matt Farah?

  Alpine, Nissan.

• 32:56Speaker 01

  Renault, Nissan.

• 32:56Matt Farah?

Renault, yeah, and, uh, he heard, uh, me talking about the gauges. We were talking about the Cayenne Turbo and I was annoyed that the, the, the top half of the gauge cluster got blocked. And so, because I didn't bring my glasses in here, uh, David sends an email.

• 33:14Matt Farah?

Uh, and, uh, he, uh, he wrote a whole shtick on the topic of engineering standard morphologies for those crazy cats at the intercooler. So he does have a story called, uh, Heroes and Dummies on the intercooler, but also, uh, TLDR, I'm gonna undercut the link sharing, uh, David, sorry, because car makers design for two extremes, the AM95 and the JF5. Do you want to know what those stand for?

• 33:44Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 33:45Matt Farah?

AM95 is American male 95th percentile.

• 33:51Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 33:51Matt Farah?

And JF5 is Japanese female 5th percentile. So, big dudes, tiny women.

• 33:58Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 34:00Matt Farah?

An AM95, which is a specific, like, crash test dummy, basically, a fit model that's a dummy, is, uh, 6'2" and weighs 246 pounds, which I exceed.

• 34:17Matt Farah?

But like, it's pretty, it's pretty close.

• 34:20Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 34:20Matt Farah?

Uh, so I'm probably the, I'm the 95th and a half percentile or something like that. Um, okay, the, the other one, the JF5, is a 4'10" and 95 pounds. So, I'm at the high end and if I have the longest torso and sit a bit more upright than most dudes because of his fucked back, probably right on the design limits. But of course instrumentation designers, my very first job in the industry, should try their best to keep the essential information, speed, warning lights, etc. in the quote "A-zone" that can be seen by people that both extremes and not just the gray zone where you half see it out of one eye. So Porsche's UX team did drop the ball somewhat if Matt, who's tall but not a basketball

• 35:05Matt Farah?

player, can't see essential information clearly when sitting comfortably. In fairness to Porsche, there is another gauge, there's four or five different layouts you can use, and one of which did put that information in the appropriate place. So it's not like they didn't give me some kind of way out.

• 35:23Speaker 01

That's a big advantage with LCDs now. We've been in plenty of analog cars where you can't see the top of a gauge.

• 35:29Matt Farah?

Yes. And so anyway, and he says, "P.S. The story of those standard mannequins is absolutely fascinating," which he describes on the intercooler piece, "it goes right back to Civil War days when people invented small, medium, and large sizes for the Union soldiers' uniforms. This was the first ever attempt to map or catalog the human body's shape, and such studies continue to the present day." Thank you, David.

• 35:58Speaker 01

  Cool.

• 35:59Matt Farah?

  Kind of interesting.

• 36:00Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's great.

• 36:01Matt Farah?

AM95, I wonder what other countries they have? They've got A for America and J for Japan, maybe they have E for Europe?

• 36:07Speaker 01

Uh, well, that's a good question because like the Dutch people on average are six feet tall or something, they're much taller. Germany's very tall. I wonder what the range is in Europe?

• 36:17Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 36:18Speaker 01

Because it's a small area in reference to the world.

• 36:21Matt Farah?

Maybe they only need the extremes though. America's the biggest country, Japan is the smallest, I suppose. Japan and China may be the same, but give or take, but...

• 36:30Speaker 01

Well, America's the biggest market, right? So they probably go...

• 36:34Matt Farah?

I mean, the biggest people. America has the biggest B.

• 36:37Speaker 01

Not by tall, not by average height though.

• 36:39Matt Farah?

  I think by volume.

• 36:40Speaker 01

By volume, yes. By volume, I agree. So I'm wondering if, because volume doesn't matter as much for like your eye line to the gauge, right?

• 36:48Matt Farah?

  True.

• 36:48Speaker 01

But, but America, you know, the United States is a much bigger market for cars than Netherlands.

• 36:54Matt Farah?

  Right.

• 36:54Speaker 01

So they go, alright, well if there's 400 million people in North America and their average height is duh.

• 36:59Matt Farah?

  Maybe there's like Scandinavia.

• 37:01Speaker 01

But they wanna be able to chat peacefully about it too, yeah.

• 37:02Matt Farah?

I think you only really need the extremes though and then one.

• 37:05Speaker 01

  You do.

• 37:06Matt Farah?

One in the, just like riding a roller coaster.

• 37:08Speaker 01

Right, and somewhere in the middle.

• 37:09Matt Farah?

  Somewhere in the middle.

• 37:10Speaker 01

  The gray zone.

• 37:10Matt Farah?

  There you go.

• 37:11Speaker 01

  The A-zone. That's cool.

• 37:13Matt Farah?

And, oh, the other funny thing that I wrote down about the Bentley GT, Christian and I, it's got the name stereo in it. I think it's, I don't know if it's name or nime, but N-A-I-M. Great stereos, but Christian said it sounds British. And I was like, what does that mean? And it has a, a really like punch-through mid-range by default is like programmed for a British listening audience.

• 37:38Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 37:38Matt Farah?

Cause Christian like knows everything about music and radio, so he was like, he showed me that that was the thing. And there's a lot of settings in there and we fucking, we dialed it in for my road trip.

• 37:48Speaker 01

  Oh, he changed it?

• 37:49Matt Farah?

  He changed it.

• 37:50Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 37:50Matt Farah?

Mm-hmm. And also, he was like, he demonstrated some of the difference between the sound quality and the, from different sources. Like from Sirius versus from, you know, my phone streaming versus from his, um, title or whatever the fuck he had, some high-end thing.

• 38:08Speaker 01

Yeah, cause the, is it bitrate? Like, the quality of the sound is

• 38:12Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 38:13Speaker 01

all over the place, or the compression. So sometimes the sound sounds thinner or worse.

• 38:17Matt Farah?

The satellite was really bad. I didn't, I, I love satellite radio, cause it's just consistency wherever in the country I am with the stations. So I like that it exists and I don't have the fucking ear to really tell. But when he did the same song exactly back-to-back on the phone, I was like, oh, you know, it's a lot different.

• 38:33Speaker 01

Was it, was satellite the worst than Spotify, then CDs?

• 38:37Matt Farah?

Spotify was better than satellite, satellite radio, yeah. We didn't have a CD and I'm not even sure it has a CD player.

• 38:43Speaker 01

  Oh, it probably doesn't, yeah.

• 38:44Matt Farah?

But Apple Music and, and was, and was, was great and I couldn't really tell the difference beyond that, but.

• 38:53Matt Farah?

Yeah, there was a huge difference between music coming from my phone and music coming from satellite. Huge difference, yeah. And like richness.

• 39:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 39:02Matt Farah?

Anyway, we have a lot of questions from the last show. Unless you have any topics you'd like to cover?

• 39:08Speaker 01

No, I don't. It's been the weekend, I went to the FCP Euro meet.

• 39:12Matt Farah?

  Oh, was that good?

• 39:13Speaker 01

Yeah, it was really a very, it was their first event on the west coast and it was really well-run. I've never parked so quickly at a morning car show.

• 39:23Matt Farah?

They're gonna say so hard. I've never parked so hard.

• 39:25Speaker 01

No, no, I pull in and they go, "Display or spectator?" And I was like, "Look at me." And then I walked around and I realized I could've said "display," which was cool. They weren't, they weren't classist. There was like builds of all kinds, which was really fun. But, you know, pull in, park, there's really good coffee.

• 39:42Matt Farah?

  That's a cool-looking 190.

• 39:43Speaker 01

They have this crazy 190 build that they made.

• 39:45Matt Farah?

We don't plug your Instagram enough, the real Zack Klapman.

• 39:48Speaker 01

I need to post on it more, but I did post a bunch of stuff from this. So this was FCP Euro's car. I mean, this is a full race car.

• 39:54Matt Farah?

  That's like a 190 race car.

• 39:56Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 39:57Matt Farah?

  Like, that's fucking sick.

• 39:58Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 39:59Matt Farah?

Love to have a go in that.

• 40:00Speaker 01

  Really nice.

• 40:01Matt Farah?

  Yeah, that's rad.

• 40:02Speaker 01

I think Vin Tron has driven this at Buttonwell a lot.

• 40:04Matt Farah?

  Really?

• 40:05Speaker 01

Yeah. It used to rip around there. This was interesting.

• 40:08Matt Farah?

Is that an Eldorado with a chopped roof?

• 40:10Speaker 01

Correct. I mean, and the guy had, you know, pictures of the build process.

• 40:13Matt Farah?

  It's kind of insane-looking, isn't it?

• 40:15Speaker 01

  It is very, retired Batman.

• 40:16Matt Farah?

Is it also a shortened wheelbase? The wheelbase, holy fucking burbletune coming up the road.

• 40:23Speaker 01

  Cops are chasing him. Good.

• 40:25Matt Farah?

You think that is? That would be amazing.

• 40:27Speaker 01

I don't think he would've let off the throttle if he was being chased by the police.

• 40:30Matt Farah?

  That is a serious burbletune.

• 40:31Speaker 01

  That sounds so bad.

• 40:32Matt Farah?

I'm, so, yeah, so, all right, so we're looking at a Cadillac, presumably some kind of Eldorado, it's a coupe, and it looks like the wheelbase has been, oh, no, some are beaten on your commenter says, "Is that a C3 Corvette with a Cadillac body?" I think it is. I think that's the windshield and roof of a C3 Corvette.

• 40:55Speaker 01

Ooh, it does look like that.

• 40:56Matt Farah?

Yeah, and the wheelbase of a Corvette, very good. That's fucking awesome.

• 41:01Speaker 01

Man, but that, and that's why the front overhang, which obviously is giant on a Cadillac of this age anyway, is so huge.

• 41:08Matt Farah?

Yeah. That's pretty funny. I like that move. That's excellent.

• 41:13Speaker 01

He represented the traditional hot rodder that showed up. He was the one. He had white hair, an umbrella, the easel. But, uh...

• 41:20Matt Farah?

  That's pretty crazy.

• 41:21Speaker 01

100510. This was cool. This was a bare metal at 2002 that they literally painted with a paintbrush and it looked rad.

• 41:28Matt Farah?

  That's kinda cool.

• 41:29Speaker 01

So there's all kinds of stuff, like really fast, modern European stuff, Mini Cooper Club. I mean, just a whole bunch of stuff, old Volkswagens. But yeah, it was a good mellow event.

• 41:38Matt Farah?

I've been asked more about old Volkswagens in the last couple of weeks. Everybody wants a 1990 GTI.

• 41:44Speaker 01

I do. I saw a Mark III. I've always liked them with a VR6. And one left and our friend Armin was like, "Dude, those things are only like $6,000 right now." Yeah. That's a good car.

• 41:55Matt Farah?

Dude, Hannah is, keeps finding the worst cars on Facebook Marketplace and being like, "Maybe we should buy this."

• 42:05Speaker 01

  You find worst.

• 42:06Matt Farah?

Just like, um, just some, like, she wanted, last night she wanted like a, an Excalibur. You know, she's like, "Why, why, why wouldn't we buy this for $6,000?" And I go, "I could think of a lot of reasons why I won't buy that."

• 42:21Speaker 01

That is a, it's like, not a meme. Um, you drive it twice.

• 42:24Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 42:25Speaker 01

  You cosplay Corolla Deville.

• 42:26Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 42:27Speaker 01

And then you go, "Well, where do I park this thing?"

• 42:28Matt Farah?

Yeah, and it's, and it drives like shit. I mean, best, best, best case scenario, that drives like an 87 Town Car. Best case.

• 42:37Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 42:37Matt Farah?

  "Oh, I don't need that."

• 42:39Speaker 01

  Get a Town Car.

• 42:40Matt Farah?

There is some YouTuber that got like modern versions of Excalibers. I forget what the kit is called. It's based on a Mustang. Like, they, they used to base them on Town Cars and then I think they did them on Cougars or something like that. And then they, uh, and then they, they stopped, they started doing it on Mustangs. And, uh, fuck, I can't remember the guy, the guys who did it. Uh, that's it.

• 43:05Speaker 01

  Zimmer Mustang.

• 43:06Matt Farah?

My Zimmer Mustang. Rolls Stang, that's what it was on, uh. Yeah, it looks so shanty with the, you can just see the Mustang in there.

• 43:15Speaker 01

  That is not good.

• 43:16Matt Farah?

  Terrible. But like that.

• 43:18Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 43:19Matt Farah?

That at least like might drive like okay. Kind of okay, probably bad.

• 43:24Speaker 01

No, because look, so for people listening, like the, the back half of the car, the back three quarters of the car just looked like a Mustang with weird fender flares.

• 43:33Matt Farah?

  Uh huh.

• 43:33Speaker 01

But then the front is, the wheelbase has been stretched three feet.

• 43:37Matt Farah?

Yeah, the front has like an entire 1930's schnoz on it.

• 43:41Speaker 01

Yeah, and the Mustang wheel would be here if you look at like the, what the A-line.

• 43:45Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 43:46Speaker 01

So now it's way out here.

• 43:48Matt Farah?

Yeah, they just stretched the front frame by whoever, however long.

• 43:51Speaker 01

  It's very stable at speed.

• 43:52Matt Farah?

It's probably awful to drive, but, but it's better than a, Jesus, the guy is going back and forth with the burble tune outside.

• 43:59Speaker 01

  Saying what's up?

• 44:00Matt Farah?

If the cops go by again, then we'll really know.

• 44:02Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 44:03Matt Farah?

  That's crazy.

• 44:03Speaker 01

  This thing is wild looking.

• 44:05Matt Farah?

Um, but, uh, yeah, so I don't want one of these, but Hannah was like, why can't?

• 44:10Speaker 01

  Why can't we?

• 44:10Matt Farah?

  No, definitely not.

• 44:12Speaker 01

  Go outside.

• 44:13Matt Farah?

There's, yeah, she's found some trash, but we might have bought a piece of art off Facebook Marketplace that is insane.

• 44:21Speaker 01

Is it a flat piece of art or one you have to place in a room?

• 44:25Matt Farah?

You ha, you would hang it on a wall.

• 44:26Speaker 01

Okay, so, well, cause when you said insane, I was like, you have to buy a sculpture?

• 44:29Matt Farah?

No. We bought an eight foot hot dog. No, uh, no, it's like.

• 44:34Speaker 01

  Yeah, you'd never do that.

• 44:35Matt Farah?

Yeah, if, if it's out there.

• 44:38Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 44:38Matt Farah?

She almost bought another one of those Wienermobiles that was like in better condition, had like better paint.

• 44:44Speaker 01

I think they need clear coat. That's why the paint faded on that thing and like.

• 44:47Matt Farah?

It's not, it wasn't paint, it's just raw plastic. Like what would you do?

• 44:51Speaker 01

Uh, you go to Home Depot, you get some Krylon.

• 44:54Matt Farah?

Does clear coating raw plastic like help?

• 44:57Speaker 01

  Well, wait.

• 44:58Matt Farah?

  It's not paint.

• 44:59Speaker 01

The hot dog is hot dog colored to begin with, right? And then it faded.

• 45:02Matt Farah?

Yeah, but it's hot dog, like it's colored plastic. It's not like, it wasn't a painted thing.

• 45:08Speaker 01

I think you could clear, if it's, uh, you'd have to paint over it then clear coat it.

• 45:11Matt Farah?

  Yeah, that's different.

• 45:13Speaker 01

Let's mask it off, come on.

• 45:15Matt Farah?

  We can get a body.

• 45:16Speaker 01

  Give her a project.

• 45:17Matt Farah?

We can get, anyone in LA got a body shop, wanna do a fucking.

• 45:19Speaker 01

No, go to, go to Home Depot, you go Rustoleum, Cryon, and they have painted six to plastic.

• 45:24Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 45:24Speaker 01

Two coats, you get the clear coat that you need a mask for, and it's like, almost illegal.

• 45:28Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 45:29Speaker 01

  There you go.

• 45:29Matt Farah?

Speaking of which, Fortune favors, uh, the JDM van owners this week because the part that Hannah got hit in the van, uh, got the part, shout out to them, uh, Coombs Country Autos in Vancouver, it's where you buy Delica shit, forty-five dollars.

• 45:45Speaker 01

  No, thank God.

• 45:46Matt Farah?

  Forty-five dollars, US.

• 45:48Speaker 01

  Not, but nice.

• 45:49Matt Farah?

Yeah, shipped, that's fucking what's up, so, uh, we'll get that set up, uh, nicely nice.

• 45:55Speaker 01

  That's awesome.

• 45:56Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 45:56Speaker 01

  That's good.

• 45:57Matt Farah?

It might not even need paint, like, the, I think the part that's coming, it is.

• 46:01Speaker 01

  Color.

• 46:02Matt Farah?

Well, it's just, it's, it's a used one, but it's like, it's the same color, so we'll see if it works.

• 46:06Speaker 01

It was a small ding, thank God.

• 46:08Matt Farah?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's, but like, that other chick's insurance is paying for it, so let's fucking go.

• 46:13Speaker 01

  Forty-five dollars.

• 46:14Matt Farah?

Fucking, it looked like, looked like a big hit to me.

• 46:16Speaker 01

It did, at the time, you're like, we gotta go through insurance, but now you realize you could Venmo'd.

• 46:21Matt Farah?

She wanted to go through insurance, it was because her car was fucked.

• 46:24Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 46:24Matt Farah?

  The Delica was champ.

• 46:25Speaker 01

  Really?

• 46:26Matt Farah?

  Oh, yeah, Delica, quote, won.

• 46:29Speaker 01

Because it doesn't crumple as much.

• 46:30Matt Farah?

Because you can win in a car accident.

• 46:31Speaker 01

  Of course.

• 46:32Matt Farah?

According to, according to Mr. Musk, of course, you can win in a car accident.

• 46:35Speaker 01

I think unless you're in an actual game of chicken, there's no, like, even if you don't die and someone dies, you don't win, you just got lucky and you don't die.

• 46:42Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 46:42Speaker 01

But you're not, you didn't win.

• 46:43Matt Farah?

But there are people that position that as winning.

• 46:46Speaker 01

  I know.

• 46:46Matt Farah?

Which is crazy. Yeah, it's like, sociopathic, actually.

• 46:50Speaker 01

I think it just grabs attention, and people go, cool!

• 46:53Matt Farah?

But if you spend like, three seconds thinking about it, you go, that's sociopathic.

• 46:57Speaker 01

It's like, uh, when people, they show like, I could drive my Jeep up on a different car, and you're like, right, but you're not gonna do that, because it's gonna damage the car, my tip over.

• 47:06Matt Farah?

Yeah, if you do, it's like, three to five, probably.

• 47:08Speaker 01

There was a video a couple of weeks ago of a guy getting pinned in by the police, and he had a lifted Jeep, and he tried to drive over a cop car.

• 47:14Matt Farah?

  Really?

• 47:15Speaker 01

And he almost did it, and then he kinda high centered on a roof, it was, yeah.

• 47:18Matt Farah?

Well, look, if you're driving over a cop car, go for it, have at it, bro. Joy, give us the video, let's, you know.

• 47:26Speaker 01

  Then you're in trouble.

• 47:26Matt Farah?

  Then we're good.

• 47:27Speaker 01

  Then you're really in trouble.

• 47:28Matt Farah?

Yeah. Lots of questions this week from the Patreon. Of course, if you want to get in the game, we had a big spike this month in the Patreon. I think my appeals to pity have worked. Get in the game. It helps keep the show fiscally solvent with the Patreon. You know, I got a very sad email, actually, from our advertising people that said that was really was basically to the effect of a few shows, a few very big shows have hoovered up like all the advertising budget and indies are across the board struggling right now.

• 48:13Matt Farah?

And you can pretty much guess who those shows are, but like, they're just like taking it all. So, you know, all right, I guess that's how that works.

• 48:24Matt Farah?

But anyway, Patreon is where it's at. It's how you ask us questions. It's how you catch us live. It's how you get an extra show every month. It's how you get a totally ad-free listening experience, which is beautifully seamlessly integrated into the same way you would get your podcasts anyway, on video and on audio. So, let's get to some of those questions. Are these first ones are leftover from the last show?

• 48:50Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 48:50Matt Farah?

That's great. We had so many the last show?

• 48:52Speaker 01

  So many.

• 48:53Matt Farah?

Oh, my God. Were you 10 pages? This document is 10 pages long?

• 48:56Speaker 01

Well, we didn't start at page one. We started at page five.

• 48:59Matt Farah?

Oh, OK, cool. All right. Wow. Go patrons. Get in the game. GuitarPlayer1999, "I have a lovely 2022 F8." That's a Ferrari. "I also have an allocation for a 296 GTS next year in which I would trade the F8. I love my car, but is the 296 more lovable?" F8 is the last non-hybrid. 296 is the new one with the V6 hybrid.

• 49:32Matt Farah?

If you're just cruising on the street, I would keep the F8. It sounds better. The 296's infotainment is even more infuriating than the F8's somehow.

• 49:45Speaker 01

That's true. The 296, I mean, if you drive hard, then it is superior.

• 49:53Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 49:53Speaker 01

The transmission's better, the power's better, the steering's really good, all those things. But if you're not driving like that, then it becomes a much more... I mean, cars are subjective, like, I guess I would go back to him, like, what turns you on about the F8? Why'd you buy it in the first place? Was it just because it's a Ferrari? Or do you love the sound? Do you love the look of it? Because if it's things like that, then going to the 296, you lose the sound. You just have a V6. And it's a good-looking car for sure, it's gorgeous.

• 50:19Matt Farah?

Yeah, it sounds good for what it is, but it's not the same.

• 50:21Speaker 01

Yeah, and it's annoying to use the controls. So a lot of those, like, two big pillars of car ownership, I feel like...

• 50:28Matt Farah?

If you leave the doors open for like 10 minutes, the battery dies.

• 50:29Speaker 01

  Also, oh, that...

• 50:30Matt Farah?

It's got that annoying hybrid shit. Yeah.

• 50:33Speaker 01

Yeah, I think the F8's rad.

• 50:34Matt Farah?

Yeah. I'd probably hang on to the F8, honestly.

• 50:40Matt Farah?

Eric says, "Considering a V6 manual Amira, C8Z06 prices have started to come into the same price territory for a used one. I've driven the Amira and previously owned a Stingray, but sold the Stingray because it didn't feel exciting. I don't go to the track, canyons only, not a daily driver. Which would you choose?" I would probably...

• 51:08Matt Farah?

The big question is, of course, do you want to drive stick or do you want to drive auto? It's a different experience. Which do you want to have? And the manual in the Amira is pretty good. It's a nice car to drive.

• 51:21Speaker 01

Only canyons, never, and only on weekends?

• 51:24Matt Farah?

I think the Amira is a really nice street car.

• 51:26Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 51:29Matt Farah?

The Z06, if you get the touring one like we got, the one without the Z07, you know, like good interior, like you get the right car that's set up for road driving, that's also an amazing car.

• 51:41Speaker 01

It is a better, not better, I mean, they're both, they're both really good overall cars. They're both sporty, they're both comfortable, they ride nice, they're both, I mean, looks, that's up to you. So, I don't think you can go wrong, it really is like, do you like manual, or do you like paddles?

• 51:53Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 51:53Speaker 01

  It's kinda...

• 51:54Matt Farah?

I mean, if you had a C8 Stingray, but it wasn't exciting, the Z06 is a lot more exciting.

• 52:00Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 52:00Matt Farah?

  A lot more.

• 52:02Speaker 01

I think the Amira looks more exotic, I mean, it looks more expensive than it is, it's more unique, obviously, there's Corvettes everywhere, if you're, if that is an aspect of cars you like.

• 52:12Matt Farah?

Yeah, and you've already had a Corvette, so you know what a Corvette is like, even if it's not a Z06.

• 52:17Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 52:19Matt Farah?

I'd probably, I like driving manual, and you won't be able to buy cars like that forever, probably, so I would probably get the Amira.

• 52:28Speaker 01

It's hard, if you don't go to the track, you miss a lot of what the Z06 gives you, but it also does give you great canyon performance, and it feels like a cheap, it's a cheap Ferrari.

• 52:36Matt Farah?

Yeah, and you can take the roof off, it's also a convertible.

• 52:39Speaker 01

You're kinda getting what F8 guy was after, with an NA motor that sounds like that.

• 52:43Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 52:44Speaker 01

Oof, that's hard. Yeah, just figure out the sound and the shifting U-value.

• 52:48Matt Farah?

Yeah. Armin is looking for a budget off-roader that's also small. Should I be looking at K-Trucks, vans, or other small vehicles like the Pajero? Um, well, I don't, I, I don't think K-Trucks and vans are like that good at going off-road. Like, they're pretty small, like the Delica maybe, but that's not a, that's not a K-Van, that's bigger.

• 53:10Speaker 01

  Yeah, definitely.

• 53:11Matt Farah?

  Um, Pajeros are good.

• 53:13Speaker 01

  Yeah, they're really good off-road.

• 53:15Matt Farah?

And, I mean, budget, I mean, fucking, our homie Joel in Panama fucks, fucks with the Samurai.

• 53:22Speaker 01

Samurai's are very popular off-road machines.

• 53:25Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 53:25Speaker 01

They're really good, because they're not, I think they're slightly bigger than K-cars, and a lot of that is width, so you have more stability.

• 53:32Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 53:32Speaker 01

I mean, they're still narrower than, I think, a Wrangler, but you can get wider axles, like you can push it out a bit.

• 53:38Matt Farah?

You can build... Those things, super sick. I mean, and honestly, a two-door Wrangler is a pretty small. Like, budget, if you're talking about a cheap two-door Wrangler from fifteen or twenty years ago, that's a pretty small vehicle as well. I mean, it's not as interesting as a, as one of the weird Japanese toys. But like, if that's what you want, like, a lot of support for it and whatever. Um, I've never gone off-roading in a real, other than the Samurai, like, uh, in, in a lot of stuff, but, um, they, you know, Mitsubishi was doing a lot of cool off-road shit in the early nineties.

• 54:14Speaker 01

The Pajero's really legit, and it's a complete thing, and it's a little more comfortable than, Samurai is tiny, you know? I mean, if you went off-road camping in the Samurai, you have that back little bench, it's kind of it.

• 54:26Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 54:27Speaker 01

So I would, I would want something slightly bigger, like a Pajero, where I could bring a cooler and all my, you know, camping gear.

• 54:33Matt Farah?

Yeah, I mean, you just want something with like a real, you know, with ideally solid axles and a real transfer case.

• 54:39Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 54:40Matt Farah?

Um, so, there's a few options out there. Uh, Ryan, uh, owns a Revology, oh. Oh, that's, oh, that's from last week, okay. Can you think of otherwise, uh, otherwise car models that could be cool to give new life by making them uh, easy and enjoyable to own? Um, I mean, there's, there's so many, um, but the, the, the real difference is like cars that like were cool looking or like fast, but actually like built kind of shitty, right? So you want to like unshitbox something.

• 55:15Speaker 01

Cause the Mustang was a sporty car, a muscle car, it was a bunch of things.

• 55:18Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 55:19Speaker 01

And its manufacturing is part of what compromised it for those tasks, whereas like a fifty-five Thunderbird, well, very similar, but like, to me, that's a GT Cruiser car, it's more of a, or, or he said Lincoln Continental.

• 55:31Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 55:31Speaker 01

I don't need a Lincoln Continental to go around turns really well, I want it to just go straight and kind of sound good and cruise.

• 55:37Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 55:37Speaker 01

So it doesn't need the re-manufacture.

• 55:39Matt Farah?

I would go screaming, screaming chicken Trans Am.

• 55:42Speaker 01

That does deserve performance, cause it, some of them suck.

• 55:46Matt Farah?

Yeah, they, they drive like shit, but they look great.

• 55:49Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 55:49Matt Farah?

And like, if you could unshitbox that and...

• 55:52Speaker 01

  C-three Corvette.

• 55:54Matt Farah?

  Yeah, that too.

• 55:55Speaker 01

  C3 Corvette.

• 55:56Matt Farah?

  That too. Yeah.

• 55:57Speaker 01

That styling deserved more, uh, more go.

• 56:00Matt Farah?

It did, it did deserve better than it got, yeah. Especially the early cars, the 69 to 71, those are the fucking jam. Yeah. That would, I think, I think it's, there's a lot of room in American cars to unshitbox stuff from the 50s and 60s. You pretty much just pick your fucking poison.

• 56:17Speaker 01

We got a lot of leftovers you could reconstitute.

• 56:19Matt Farah?

Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. 55 T-Bird, I was, we were, I was up at Good Vibes talking to, uh, Lynn Woodward and Aaron Robinson, who won a fucking trophy.

• 56:27Speaker 01

I know, I saw them, uh, last night at a cocktail party.

• 56:29Matt Farah?

They won an entry into, uh...

• 56:32Speaker 01

  Me and Migler.

• 56:33Matt Farah?

  Yeah, which was crazy.

• 56:34Speaker 01

And Aaron's like, "We're so happy to win, but it's gonna be so expensive to go."

• 56:37Matt Farah?

Yeah, and they were trying to talk about like, what like affordable cars are actually eligible for the Milli Millia. And he said like, you know, um, he, he had a guy who had, who had had a fully race-prepped 55 T-Bird. I was like, "That sounds fucking sick, dude." Going to Italy in a 55 T-Bird race car and ripping it, that sounds awesome.

• 56:59Speaker 01

  That is really cool.

• 57:00Matt Farah?

Do that, yeah. So there's a bunch of, someone wrote an article, uh, I think it was Colin Comer, maybe, um, wrote an article that was like, you know, 10, the 10 cheapest cars that you can buy that are like eligible for, I think it was the Colorado Grand, but it was like, basically like, it's about like finding little hacks or weird hacks, I'm sorry I said that word about this, but like, ways in that are not crazy expensive. Like, there was like a, some kind of Fiat that raced at Le Mans, you know, in the 70s that was available for like $35,000, you know?

• 57:35Speaker 01

Yeah, so T-Bird competed, uh, in the Millia, I was, well, one of them ran back in the day.

• 57:40Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 57:41Speaker 01

That's cool. Yeah, I mean, cause the, the cars that get all the press from those events are the $2 million this or that, or Ferrari or Mercedes.

• 57:48Matt Farah?

But you can do them in something pretty reasonable.

• 57:50Speaker 01

Yeah, dude, a T-Bird would be sweet.

• 57:52Matt Farah?

Yeah, it's anything of 57 or, or earlier.

• 57:55Speaker 01

Oh, yeah, if it was, if it was fast and had a little...

• 57:57Matt Farah?

  You could do C, uh, do a C1 Corvette, you do a 56 or 57 Corvette, like, that's a fucking, that's a V8, like, that's a proper car.

• 58:08Matt Farah?

A T-Bird, you could get a factory, uh, I don't know if it's factory or dealer installed, but you can get a supercharger on a 57 Thunderbird. Thing would rip.

• 58:18Speaker 01

I would just build the cheater motor, just an A.

• 58:20Matt Farah?

  Full 14 to 1 compression.

• 58:23Speaker 01

  Uh huh, yep.

• 58:26Matt Farah?

I, SG90, I don't, uh, I don't have answers to your long-term reliability questions of, uh, for used Macans and Cayennes. I'm very sorry. Don't have it. Third pedal connoisseur? Oh, wait.

• 58:45Speaker 01

  Var the Var.

• 58:46Matt Farah?

Oh, I think we've answered, uh, oh, Var the Var, sorry. Outside of Porsches, can you think of a pre-smog car that you would be willing to daily drive or at least use as a real car in some capacity, if not literally driving it every day? Pre, um, I would be willing to use an early 70s Mercedes-Benz sedan that was like perfect condition mechanically every day. That would be okay. Totally doable.

• 59:17Speaker 01

Now, does every day mean it has to work every day indefinitely? Like, I, I could totally drive around in an old Mustang.

• 59:25Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 59:26Speaker 01

That was mechanically competent, and then like eight months later it might have an issue, and I could be fine with that. I could do that three days a week for, for a year.

• 59:33Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 59:34Speaker 01

  Really fun.

• 59:36Matt Farah?

I mean, I've essentially been doing it with the Bentley. It's not pre-smog, but like my experience isn't that much different than if it was.

• 59:43Speaker 01

  True.

• 59:44Matt Farah?

  I mean.

• 59:45Speaker 01

I mean, any, there's so many carbureted things that would be good, like a Datsun, a Datsun 510 would be kinda nice. Um, uh, Austin, that's too small.

• 59:56Matt Farah?

There's, I mean, Porsche is, like, you could easily daily a

• 1:00:00Speaker 01

  Of course.

• 1:00:01Matt Farah?

Uh, an early 70s Porsche, easily.

• 1:00:03Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's true.

• 1:00:04Matt Farah?

I think you could easily daily an early 70s Mercedes.

• 1:00:07Speaker 01

Oh, I believe, yeah. I think that would be the most comfortable.

• 1:00:10Matt Farah?

Yeah. Like a 280 SE, that would be fucking a delight. That would be so nice.

• 1:00:16Speaker 01

Someone at the, at the show had a 50. Five Mercedes 220.

• 1:00:21Matt Farah?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:00:21Speaker 01

  That was very cool looking.

• 1:00:22Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:23Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:00:23Matt Farah?

The, uh, you could daily, I mean, this is real little hoity-toity, but you could daily a gullwing.

• 1:00:29Speaker 01

There was one of those too.

• 1:00:30Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:31Speaker 01

  That'd be obviously.

• 1:00:31Matt Farah?

I've driven, there's nothing about a gullwing, particularly if it's a convertible, that you can't, that says you could not drive it every day. It's so easy to drive those cars. They're like modern cars. Beetles.

• 1:00:44Speaker 01

I don't know if I could do that. It's so slow. I gotta, I drive on the highway every day.

• 1:00:47Matt Farah?

  Sure.

• 1:00:48Speaker 01

Or every other day. I'm not doing that.

• 1:00:50Matt Farah?

But pre smog, you can make it fast.

• 1:00:51Speaker 01

  No, you can't.

• 1:00:52Matt Farah?

Yeah, you can. I mean, you can make it.

• 1:00:55Speaker 01

  You've got a built engine.

• 1:00:55Matt Farah?

You could make, yeah, it's pre smog, pre smog. You could make it fast enough to cruise comfortably at 80. Easily.

• 1:01:02Speaker 01

How long does it take to get to 80?

• 1:01:04Matt Farah?

Not if you made the engine fast, powerful enough.

• 1:01:07Speaker 01

  Real hot rod, yeah.

• 1:01:08Matt Farah?

Yeah, it wouldn't need that much power. Like shitty beetles are like 70 horsepower.

• 1:01:12Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:01:12Matt Farah?

You could very easily put 150 horsepower engine in that car.

• 1:01:15Speaker 01

  And they weigh nothing.

• 1:01:16Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:16Speaker 01

  That's a 10 to 1.

• 1:01:17Matt Farah?

They're like 1700 pounds. You can rip it. Um, I think we answered, we talked about, uh, that. Uh, Subaru, 2001 Subaru Forester, what's a good starter motorcycle for a heavier guy? No crotch rockets.

• 1:01:34Speaker 01

Well, the GS, right? I mean, any of the.

• 1:01:37Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:38Speaker 01

Overland bikes, not necessarily only BMW, but they're comfortable, they're upright, they have windshields. They have enough suspension for a larger person.

• 1:01:47Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:47Speaker 01

Um, they're not super fast, but you'll definitely get on the highway without getting hit by a car.

• 1:01:52Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:52Speaker 01

  That's a good start.

• 1:01:53Matt Farah?

Um, a good one that's, that I've, that I've ridden around a bunch that's very forgiving is my friend's, um, uh, Triumph Tiger 900, which is very flexible for all different types of riding. Um, and it's really comfortable to ride for a couple hours. So I really like those, but it's a good piece of advice. And a lot of those off-road. Are those adventure bikes? You know, you get them on Nobby tires or you get them on street tires. Just get them on street tires and then you're fine.

• 1:02:21Speaker 01

Can I tell you a funny motorcycle story?

• 1:02:23Matt Farah?

  Yes.

• 1:02:23Speaker 01

So you know, I bought the MZ Bagheera to like escape the city if there's a calamity. Sarah had never seen it and I brought her here the other day when we returned the Revology car. And I go, oh, this is the motorcycle. And she's like, oh, cool. And I go to start it and it doesn't start, but it does just dump gasoline on the ground, which I cleaned up.

• 1:02:41Matt Farah?

  Thanks.

• 1:02:41Speaker 01

And I talked to Adam, I was like, hey, this happens. What's the protocol here? And it was fine. And I text Alex, I find out what's wrong with it. But it was just so funny. I was like, honey, here's the motorcycle I bought in case of emergency. And it, oh my, not only does it not start, it almost catches itself.

• 1:02:58Matt Farah?

  You gotta ride it.

• 1:02:59Speaker 01

  We'll take the RAV4.

• 1:03:00Matt Farah?

That's how you keep it running.

• 1:03:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:03:01Matt Farah?

Yeah. No, if the shit hits the fan, yeah, we're getting out of here and.

• 1:03:04Speaker 01

  RAV4?

• 1:03:05Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:05Speaker 01

  To the place? We know.

• 1:03:07Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:08Speaker 01

We're not going to talk about it on air anymore.

• 1:03:09Matt Farah?

Right. Uh, oh God. Billy Jimmy Zucks, trying to revitalize their car YouTube channel started in 2008. Besides uploading a lot of content, how would you go about it if you had to start again? I probably wouldn't revitalize a channel. I don't think there, I think once the channel goes up and then down again, I don't think there's anything bringing it back.

• 1:03:33Speaker 01

Yeah, it might be smarter to just start a new, even if the content's the same. It honestly might be better to just start a new channel because as we've talked about, YouTube rewards a new channel.

• 1:03:42Matt Farah?

Yeah. I would definitely start a new channel and I would definitely be mad shitty and controversial and make all the money.

• 1:03:50Speaker 01

  There's just, there's so many.

• 1:03:51Matt Farah?

  I would join the Manosphere.

• 1:03:53Speaker 01

Let's see, like I'm, I'm checking out his channel real quick. Uh, I mean, you gotta just do something that hooks people because it looks like it's a lot of just cool car driving on the road. No offense, like that was a big thing 15 years ago.

• 1:04:05Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:05Speaker 01

What was his name? Saab Kyle?

• 1:04:07Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:07Speaker 01

Like, all right, that used to work, but I think, you know, now you just, you can do shorts and other things, but I would launch a new channel.

• 1:04:17Matt Farah?

So David Whitcroft wants to know the, I'm on my phone to answer his question. Wants to know the name of the Lemon Law lawyer that I mentioned at the Rivian thing. And it is the law offices of Robert, what's his last name? Robert Starr, S.T.A.R.R. And that's a recommendation through Zuckerman. Robert L. Starr in Calabasas.

• 1:04:47Speaker 01

I think, did we answer this one last time?

• 1:04:48Matt Farah?

  Let's see.

• 1:04:49Speaker 01

  It seems familiar.

• 1:04:52Matt Farah?

Uh, no, we didn't go to this. Could man, all wheel drive biased, could manufacturers restomod? Or sell new engines, transmissions and other components for pre-existing vehicles? Could that be a good way to keep the same cars on the road? Reducing the manufacturing and environmental cost, yet allow internal combustion engines to still be sold? Uh, could upcycling be the environmentally feasible option for enthusiast brands? Well, most manufacturers will sell you a new engine, transmission or component for vehicles already on the road.

• 1:05:28Speaker 01

  True.

• 1:05:29Matt Farah?

  I mean.

• 1:05:29Speaker 01

I mean, on the performance side, GM Performance already does this. Ford Performance does this, you can get.

• 1:05:34Matt Farah?

Nissan will do it with RBs.

• 1:05:36Speaker 01

Right, you can get a variety of stock or improved engines to go into a number of different cars.

• 1:05:42Matt Farah?

Yeah, can you buy like all Honda four cylinder engines?

• 1:05:45Speaker 01

  I don't know, probably.

• 1:05:46Matt Farah?

But, so I, I think you can do that. And I think that is a good way to keep cars on the road. But I don't think any manufacturer is going to actively pursue a strategy that doesn't result in them building and selling more cars.

• 1:06:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:06:02Matt Farah?

If they're supporting enthusiast cars, it's because the enthusiasts have demanded it. But I don't think there's any real motivation for an OEM to, to actively try to not make more cars.

• 1:06:16Speaker 01

Right, because they're, then they're actively underselling themselves.

• 1:06:20Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:21Speaker 01

  Like, yeah.

• 1:06:22Matt Farah?

Toblerone Malone, what is the advantage of center lock nuts versus typical lock nuts? Um, I mean, it's, other than looking cool and being a thing that comes from racing, because if you're doing a pit stop, one lug nut, as opposed to doo doo doo doo doo, like old NASCAR, it's just faster, but it may reduce like a little bit of mass somehow. It might just be a lighter mechanism, but like, I think it's just, it's got race car shit on it.

• 1:06:52Speaker 01

Yeah, because it's complicated. Porsche just had to recall some of their center lock wheels, which is a bummer. I'm not trying to disparage like center lock in general, but something, I forget who I was talking to, like Vin, Vin and Nacha makes good content about this. Whenever you want to change your tires, you need the super long torque wrench. I think, I think it's much more inconvenient than I would want on a street car, you know? Like if you're going to change those wheels, if you're on a road trip and you happen to break down in the wrong area that only has one tire shop, you might have to get real creative to get that center lock off. I just don't want to deal with that.

• 1:07:23Matt Farah?

Yeah, I'd, I would rather not have it. But I get it. Steez Buskemi, uh, when talking about the use of cars, I find the mentions of valet parking to be fascinating as it's not really a thing here in Melbourne. Uh, is it, is it a cultural thing where in order to seem premium, a venue must have its own parking in valet?

• 1:07:48Matt Farah?

And I always get confused at how often I hear valets mentioned. To me, it's a thing I only see in movies. I guess valet parking, not big in Melbourne. I mean, in LA, there's, it's seen.

• 1:07:58Speaker 01

  It's too big.

• 1:07:59Matt Farah?

It is seen as a luxury, right? Luxury restaurants and people put valets. It's also a way to make money and it's a way to, you know? Otherwise you, you, at a busy restaurant that doesn't have valet, you might have to look for a while to find parking.

• 1:08:15Speaker 01

Well, I think, I think, I mean, I was a valet for three years. So when I moved to LA, I, the first apartment I had was a crappy apartment in a not good neighborhood. And the parking lot next to me was for a restaurant and a 7-Eleven. And I saw that they had a valet stand and I was like, what? I was just confused. When you pulled in, you had to tell the valet, "I'm going to 7-Eleven, not the restaurant." There was, and this, it had eight spots.

• 1:08:37Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:38Speaker 01

What I figured out it was, is in a lot of LA, there's just not enough parking lot for the restaurant. So they street parked the cars. So the valet will handle that for you. Otherwise, you could be driving around for half an hour looking for a street spot.

• 1:08:50Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:51Speaker 01

So it's really like, it's a way for the restaurant or parking lot to make extra money. And a way for them to kind of, air quotes, solve the parking shortage.

• 1:09:00Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:03Matt Farah?

But it's, it's like, uh, the movie Clueless is very accurate. What's the point? Everywhere you go has valet, which is very, very true.

• 1:09:10Speaker 01

  True.

• 1:09:11Matt Farah?

Will you scroll down, please? Chappy says, oh, just got their first Panera, no.

• 1:09:20Matt Farah?

Chappy, I have a Panera. I, I do like them. I just don't like them at full price. I like them at a deeply discounted price.

• 1:09:30Matt Farah?

Oh, wow. Meh, recently took over my father's 997 Turbo Cabrio and love it. Great car, super low miles and a six-speed. But I can't help but think it's too fast to really enjoy. You wind it out in third and you're doing a buck fifteen. Yeah, the 997 Turbo is a very, very fast car. Would I get the same driving enjoyment from a 993 non-turbo? I like, um, you know, basically, I think you could, assuming it was okay with your dad. If you sold that, a 4,000 mile 997 Turbo Cab six-speed is a hell of a car.

• 1:10:13Matt Farah?

I think you could sell it for quite a lot of money. And you could get into a great 993. And 993s are really nice to drive. They're a lot of fun. They are, they are fun. You don't need the turbos. They're fun in a different way. If you can get an S, that would be great. That might be hard, but, um, you might be able to get an S for that kind of money, depending on what that turbo gets. But, um, yeah, you can, you, you can rev it out a little more. It's not insanely fast, but they're very pleasant to drive.

• 1:10:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:10:42Matt Farah?

And they are a little bit smaller.

• 1:10:45Matt Farah?

  Uh, okay.

• 1:10:49Matt Farah?

Ryan Coppers Pan Addiction. Bought a great 981 Boxer two and a half years ago. I've daily driven it almost 40,000 miles and still love it. Thinking of adding a second car to tackle light off-roading and get to fun places around Arizona that the Boxer can't. It needs to be not huge, reliable, and under $15,000. Is an early 2000s Tacoma a bad idea? I don't necessarily need a truck bed. Well, you can get a 4Runner. A 4Runner is a Tacoma SUV, basically.

• 1:11:24Speaker 01

If you can get one of those for under 15, I mean Tacoma's a great solution for what you're proposing because it is reliable and it will off-road very well and they last a long time. And I think they hold their value pretty good. But if you can get a 4Runner, then get that.

• 1:11:38Matt Farah?

Yeah. I wouldn't get a pickup truck if you don't need the truck bed. That's a compromise you don't need to make. I mean, again, Wrangler. I mean, 15K will get you a totally serviceable Wrangler.

• 1:11:53Speaker 01

Also, Mike Musto did this, you can get a 90's Cherokee.

• 1:11:58Matt Farah?

  Oh, the Grand Cherokee.

• 1:11:59Speaker 01

I mean, either one because the regular Cherokee with the 4-liter is a Wrangler engine, but it just has an SUV body. And then the Grand Cherokee drives much nicer. That drives like an SUV and you can put a lift kit on them and like handle some mild stuff.

• 1:12:14Matt Farah?

  Yeah, they're alright.

• 1:12:14Speaker 01

Pretty good. Make sure the transmission's been looked at. Just had a tendency to go to fail.

• 1:12:20Matt Farah?

Yeah. Couple options for you. Could you scroll it down, please? Let's see. All-wheel-drive bias. Can an engine with a lot of personality make up for a flawed chassis, transmission, suspension, etc.? Yes. See early AMG. Would you rather have a video with an interesting engine or good everything else with a lackluster engine?

• 1:12:47Speaker 01

Now, do we mean good engine and then the car is ugly, dynamically, you know, too soft? I think, like, how?

• 1:12:57Matt Farah?

Interesting engine and meh rest of car versus good rest of car and meh engine.

• 1:13:05Speaker 01

Well, that's like, like Cadillacs that had the North Star, you know?

• 1:13:08Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:09Speaker 01

Quick enough, sounded, put some pipes on it, it'd sound good, but the car was like just too soft, milquetoast, whatever.

• 1:13:16Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:17Speaker 01

  The other side is...

• 1:13:18Matt Farah?

I'd probably rather have the engine.

• 1:13:22Matt Farah?

It's more important that the engine is good than that the rest of the car is good.

• 1:13:29Matt Farah?

  To me.

• 1:13:29Speaker 01

And a Miata. Like, what camp does the Miata fall into? I mean, the engine is durable.

• 1:13:34Matt Farah?

  No, everything else is...

• 1:13:35Speaker 01

  It's not magic.

• 1:13:35Matt Farah?

  The engine's not...

• 1:13:36Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:13:36Matt Farah?

Yeah, the engine's not keeping me around.

• 1:13:38Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:13:38Matt Farah?

  Yeah, it's the everything else.

• 1:13:41Speaker 01

I think I would go with the everything else and a whatever engine.

• 1:13:43Matt Farah?

  Okay.

• 1:13:48Matt Farah?

El Gato, you guys have said your personal cars tend to be older classics because you have access to press cars as journalists. True. In another life where you are not a journalist, what might your personal car collection look like?

• 1:14:00Speaker 01

  Oh, shit.

• 1:14:01Matt Farah?

I think I would have, uh, one SUV

• 1:14:07Matt Farah?

and one sports car. And then, one modern sports car and then one older sports car. So like, just a pared down version of kind of what I have now.

• 1:14:18Speaker 01

  What you have.

• 1:14:18Matt Farah?

Like, electric SUV daily, and then, you know, maybe the Porsche and the NSX. Something around those lines. And then a motorcycle.

• 1:14:30Speaker 01

I think, I think I would have two cars. I think I'd have some sort of off-road thing and a newer sports car that would have a car payment. I'm not sure what it would be, like GR86 or something, but I'd probably change cars every two years.

• 1:14:43Matt Farah?

I love a leased daily. I love the not having to worry about it that I have.

• 1:14:48Speaker 01

A leased sports car is probably where I would end up.

• 1:14:51Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:51Speaker 01

I know that financially, it's not the smartest idea, but then you can...

• 1:14:54Matt Farah?

But you could treat it like it's a rental?

• 1:14:56Speaker 01

Yeah, I could treat it like it's a rental. It, it's a press car I have forever and that I don't have to make content for. Like, that's what it would kind of be. And then I would be, I'd be able to change flavors all the time.

• 1:15:04Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:04Speaker 01

Because now I don't have to do that, because we get to drive so much stuff.

• 1:15:07Matt Farah?

Yeah. Here for Matt's Cats. What's a, uh, they asked two, but I'm gonna pick one. What's a car everyone else seems to love that you cannot get on board with and why?

• 1:15:21Matt Farah?

  Shit on something.

• 1:15:22Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 1:15:25Matt Farah?

  Everyone else seems to love.

• 1:15:27Speaker 01

That everyone, I mean, that's the harder part. Like, I think, I haven't driven the newest Aventador. But the ones I've driven, I think, are less impressive than Huracans or, you know, equivalents in terms of handling. The Huracan gives me enough Lamborghini experience in terms of noise, performance, look, everything, that the Aventador, I go, oh, this just kind of understeered when I've driven them.

• 1:15:49Matt Farah?

  The early ones certainly did.

• 1:15:51Speaker 01

I know, you said the new ones, they fixed it.

• 1:15:52Matt Farah?

Yeah, by the time they got to SV and shit, they actually...

• 1:15:54Speaker 01

The time I got there, I'm like, this car's too big.

• 1:15:56Matt Farah?

Revuelto goes around corners, it's amazing.

• 1:15:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:15:58Matt Farah?

Um, hmm. Something everyone else loves. I mean, anything, all of the EXO cars. And I haven't tried a Nomad yet, but like, Ariel Atom, Exocet.

• 1:16:10Speaker 01

  Oh, anything with no body.

• 1:16:12Matt Farah?

Pretty, yeah, anything with no body. I, I think that separates the cars from motorcycles. I have yet to drive a car with no body that's as good as a motorcycle, and you could get justice hurt.

• 1:16:24Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's fair.

• 1:16:25Matt Farah?

I, I would love to try the Nomad, but frankly, if I was gonna go off-roading, I also want a body.

• 1:16:33Speaker 01

And it, it's only good at off-roading on, uh, dirt roads.

• 1:16:37Matt Farah?

  Sure.

• 1:16:37Speaker 01

As soon as the, I got, I high-centered on a mostly flat dirt straw road.

• 1:16:42Matt Farah?

  Yeah, that's not great.

• 1:16:43Speaker 01

  On a sand hill.

• 1:16:43Matt Farah?

  That's not so great.

• 1:16:44Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:16:45Matt Farah?

Uh, the idea of it is great, but I don't think I want that, yeah. Um...

• 1:16:53Matt Farah?

Let's see, Tim says, which 991 Turbo S would be a more, which would be a more interesting daily driver? Magnus's high-mileage Turbo or the client, or the one I just sold, the mint green over tan? But I don't know about interesting. I mean, certainly the one with 180,000 miles or whatever is more interesting.

• 1:17:15Speaker 01

It, it's a more interesting story.

• 1:17:16Matt Farah?

  Especially if you're Magnus.

• 1:17:18Speaker 01

Well, I think if you pulled up to any car meet and someone said, oh, then they ask about it, and if you say, this one has nearly 200,000 miles, and you go, this one is super expensive.

• 1:17:27Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:28Speaker 01

People will go, that one looks amazing, well-done. This one, oh, wow!

• 1:17:31Matt Farah?

  Tell me about that.

• 1:17:32Speaker 01

  And they'll ask more questions.

• 1:17:33Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:35Matt Farah?

Uh, squirkle jerk. I've noticed that Mercedes S-Class coupes have depreciated into the thirty to forty thousand dollar range. Is this a steal considering these were six figures or does the maintenance make them a no-go? Uh, it's both. Um, uh, it is a steal because the cars are overwhelmingly well-made cars. And they will ride and drive and handle very nice when they're, if they're maintained properly. But also they cost a goddamn fortune to fix.

• 1:18:05Speaker 01

  If things go wrong.

• 1:18:06Matt Farah?

And they're out of warranty and they might be approaching. Mercedes have like an A service and a B service and like alternates. It's like every five thousand miles, it's the A service, every ten thousand, it's the B service. And so, um, you know, if you're coming up on the B service or whatever, one of, if there's a C service, that's like every hundred K or whatever, you might be looking at a fucking enormous maintenance bill. Um, so PPI.

• 1:18:34Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:18:35Matt Farah?

  PPI, my friends.

• 1:18:37Speaker 01

I'll tell you what, there are a lot of CLS's, E55 AMGs, like this generation, E classes and CLS's at the car meet. And there was like twenty. So I think people have jumped on.

• 1:18:47Matt Farah?

  People have figured this out?

• 1:18:48Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:18:50Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:18:52Matt Farah?

Um, I like this Mr. Heisenberg question. I feel like we should save it though for a bigger topic. Cause I wanna put some thought into that.

• 1:19:00Speaker 01

  Yeah, that'd be fun.

• 1:19:01Matt Farah?

We'll save that one for later. Ivan Capote, can you make a V8 first gen RS5 handle well? Um, so, uh, I mean, you could make it handle better. But those V8 Audis are famously very nose-heavy cars. And so there's only so much you can do. And in order to make that front end stick better, you might have to compromise the ride.

• 1:19:28Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 1:19:28Matt Farah?

Or the camber, or you might have to fuck something up in order to make it turn in.

• 1:19:33Speaker 01

Yeah, I mean, you just have to go big tire, maybe lots of spring.

• 1:19:37Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:19:37Speaker 01

And was the weight balance still weird back then?

• 1:19:40Matt Farah?

  Very forward.

• 1:19:41Speaker 01

They hadn't moved it back a lot, yeah.

• 1:19:42Matt Farah?

  Very forward.

• 1:19:43Speaker 01

I think that's like the RS3 you drove. I mean, you have to go smaller wheels in the back.

• 1:19:47Matt Farah?

Yeah, you could do a reverse stagger.

• 1:19:50Speaker 01

Reverse stagger, it's gonna make it.

• 1:19:52Matt Farah?

  Tramline maybe.

• 1:19:53Speaker 01

Yeah, but it might tramline and all those things.

• 1:19:55Matt Farah?

Yeah. I mean, it's, and I, I, yeah, in a magazine test against the Mercedes and the AMG at that time, it was probably the worst handling of those three cars. But that doesn't mean it's like, bad.

• 1:20:10Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:20:11Matt Farah?

Like, it handles fine for road driving, you know, it's, it, it'll, if you, if you're playing within the limits of grip, which on roads you really should be, then it's fine. You know, it's just not, on a racetrack, when you're really pushing it, yeah, it's like understeery, but on a windy road, it's pretty much fine. Is that, uh?

• 1:20:35Speaker 01

And that is it. And they may have ridden better than those, you know, the M3 or the C, um, C63 it was competing against.

• 1:20:43Matt Farah?

  Sure.

• 1:20:43Speaker 01

Because the M3 was always really tight, so yeah, it was more responsive on the track. It had better weight balance, but on a bumpier road where you're just kind of flowing along, RS5 might shine.

• 1:20:52Matt Farah?

The RS5 was pretty nice. Like, it wasn't like, terrible.

• 1:20:55Speaker 01

No, sounded good. It was a GT car.

• 1:20:57Matt Farah?

Yeah. And it, and that engine sounds rad.

• 1:21:00Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:21:00Matt Farah?

  That 4.2, it's a great sounding engine.

• 1:21:02Speaker 01

German Aston Martin, maybe? Kind of? It's a little bit of the flavor.

• 1:21:06Matt Farah?

It's a, it's got that timing chain, yeah, you know, fucking, I kind of, I kind of like...

• 1:21:11Speaker 01

The 4.2 dude, it sounds awesome.

• 1:21:13Matt Farah?

  A great sounding motor.

• 1:21:14Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:21:15Matt Farah?

Yeah. Put the fucking bright exhaust on it, mm, what a treat. Um, well, by the time you guys, uh, hear this, I will be in Arizona on the Road and Track, uh, Arizona Desert Run. That one is, uh, is obviously sold out because we're doing it fucking right now, but come drive with me in, uh, April in Texas. Go to experiences dot road and track dot com and sign up for our, uh, Austin, Beyond Austin Limits, what have they called it? Beyond, Beyond City Limits. They've called it Beyond City Limits. It's the Austin one. It's Texas hill country, uh, with some track time at Cota and, uh, luxury hotels and great food and drinking. It's gonna be a good time, that one. Um, thanks for listening,

• 1:21:59Matt Farah?

everybody. I hope you've enjoyed this episode of the program, and we'll see you later.
