• 0:06Sam Morril?

Should we start it up? Let's roll.

• 0:07Mark Normand?

Oh, how about you, Ed? You like the booze?

• 0:10Speaker 02

  Nah.

• 0:11Mark Normand?

  Come on!

• 0:12Speaker 02

I mean, I used to like it. And it does weird things to my, um... To my heart.

• 0:19Mark Normand?

  Oh.

• 0:20Sam Morril?

  Really?

• 0:21Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 0:21Sam Morril?

Yeah, I think it's bad for you.

• 0:22Speaker 02

So I just kinda stopped. It kinda sets my heart in weird rhythms and...

• 0:28Mark Normand?

  Oh, jeez.

• 0:28Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 0:29Mark Normand?

So you just stick with cocaine?

• 0:30Speaker 02

  Yeah. I drink cocaine.

• 0:33Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 0:34Speaker 02

  It's weird.

• 0:34Sam Morril?

  That is tough.

• 0:35Speaker 02

Yeah, it's super weird, but it's great.

• 0:36Mark Normand?

I wonder if that would work? If you mixed it in like a liquid IV? You know, if that would get you...

• 0:41Sam Morril?

No one's ever wanted to waste that much cocaine.

• 0:42Mark Normand?

I guess you're right. It would dissolve.

• 0:44Speaker 02

What I do is I melt it.

• 0:45Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 0:46Speaker 02

See? And then I get it in a syringe and I inject it into my eyeball.

• 0:50Mark Normand?

  Is that freebasing?

• 0:51Speaker 02

  No, that's...

• 0:52Mark Normand?

  That's where you smoke it?

• 0:53Speaker 02

  It's freeballing. That's called freeballing.

• 0:55Sam Morril?

This is the nerdiest drug conversation ever.

• 0:57Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 0:57Sam Morril?

Is that what freebasing? I don't know what it is.

• 0:59Speaker 02

This is like those conversations a kid has with their dad.

• 1:03Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:04Speaker 02

Where the dad's like, "Now, listen. I don't want you to do the coke... The thing that you snort."

• 1:11Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:11Speaker 02

It's like, "Dad, you don't snort marijuana."

• 1:13Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:14Speaker 02

Dad's like, "How do you know? You already know too much."

• 1:17Mark Normand?

You gotta test your weed. There's fentanyl in it. And you're like, "Dad."

• 1:20Sam Morril?

Did people... Did people always try to do a shot with you after The Hangover?

• 1:24Speaker 02

Oh, man. Yeah, I mean, that was... Hangover fans like to drink.

• 1:31Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:31Speaker 02

I'll put it that way. So when that movie came out, it was a lot of like, "We're buying you shots." And they'd like shove a shot in your face. And if you didn't drink it, you could get punched.

• 1:42Mark Normand?

Yeah, isn't that weird? They get really upset if you don't drink it. You're like, "I never asked for this."

• 1:46Speaker 02

Most of the time, I was happy to oblige.

• 1:48Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:49Mark Normand?

  Yeah, till the heart failure.

• 1:50Speaker 02

  Yeah, till things got weird.

• 1:52Sam Morril?

We have a friend, Joe DeRosa, who I feel like likes funerals 'cause you can't turn down the shot.

• 1:57Mark Normand?

  Mmm.

• 1:58Sam Morril?

'Cause you can't be like, "To Dave." You gotta be like, "All right, fine."

• 2:01Mark Normand?

Yeah, he actually goes to funerals he doesn't know.

• 2:03Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 2:04Speaker 02

  Sure, he's a funeral crasher.

• 2:05Mark Normand?

  Yes!

• 2:05Speaker 02

  Sure, why not?

• 2:06Mark Normand?

  Hey, sequel.

• 2:07Speaker 02

  Right.

• 2:07Mark Normand?

  That's not bad.

• 2:09Sam Morril?

But yeah, I feel like old-school fans, Hangover fans, I feel like they wanna do a shot with, you know...

• 2:14Speaker 02

Yeah. Office fans are like, "Let's have a craft brew."

• 2:21Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 2:21Speaker 02

  Let's have it, let's have a-

• 2:22Mark Normand?

  An IPA.

• 2:23Speaker 02

Let's have a nice conversation over a craft brew.

• 2:25Mark Normand?

That's cool. I'm down for that.

• 2:27Speaker 02

  I'm in.

• 2:28Mark Normand?

I feel like The Hangover, the fir- it was 2008, 2011, and 2013, the three trilogy.

• 2:35Speaker 02

  I think you're off a little bit.

• 2:36Mark Normand?

May- pull that up there, fatty.

• 2:37Speaker 02

Wasn't it like 2010, 11, the first one?

• 2:40Mark Normand?

But I feel like that was the last run for the fun, love, and comedy movie, and you got in.

• 2:46Speaker 02

I think Hot Tub Time Machine was like the last one.

• 2:48Mark Normand?

  What year was that?

• 2:49Speaker 02

  That was it, right?

• 2:51Mark Normand?

I feel like it kinda cut off around there, but you guys got them in at the buzzer and they were-

• 2:55Speaker 02

We snuck that one in there.

• 2:56Mark Normand?

Yeah, and they were all great.

• 2:58Speaker 02

Hangover was one of the last comedies I remember seeing in the theater.

• 3:02Sam Morril?

  It's 09 was the first one, 11.

• 3:04Speaker 02

Oh, is that right? I mean, I- did Bridesmaids come after Hangover?

• 3:07Sam Morril?

  Yeah, Bridesmaids was-

• 3:08Speaker 02

I saw that in the theater, but how many comedies can you remember like-

• 3:11Mark Normand?

  Tropic Thunder?

• 3:12Speaker 02

  That's-

• 3:12Mark Normand?

  That was awesome.

• 3:13Speaker 02

  Was that before?

• 3:13Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 3:14Mark Normand?

I think it was a little later.

• 3:15Speaker 02

  I think it was before.

• 3:16Mark Normand?

  Oh, really?

• 3:17Speaker 02

I think Tropic Thunder was before. But there's something about, I guess like live shows of it, you know, thank God for us, because we tour all the time and we, people come out to see stand-up, but, I mean, I feel like back, back in the day, like, it was great to see a comedy in a packed theater.

• 3:31Mark Normand?

  Oh, it was the best.

• 3:32Speaker 02

Oh, man. I remember, we're, we're like sort of midtown west here, right?

• 3:38Sam Morril?

  Mm-hmm.

• 3:39Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 3:39Speaker 02

So I, I remember when I lived here, um, going to see Something About Mary.

• 3:46Mark Normand?

  Ah.

• 3:47Speaker 02

Because I was such a, such a huge Ben Stiller fan from The Ben Stiller Show, and, and I was, you know, it was early, what year was that? Pull that one up.

• 3:56Mark Normand?

  94, I'm calling.

• 3:57Speaker 02

  No, no, no, no.

• 3:57Sam Morril?

  90-

• 3:58Speaker 02

  Wait.

• 3:58Mark Normand?

  Ah.

• 3:59Speaker 02

Okay, 98, so I just, I moved here in 96. I'd just been here for two years, just struggling to get those open mic spots and doing as much comedy as I could, and, and I, I loved Mr. Show and The Ben Stiller Show and, and all these, all those great shows, and, and, uh, and like, Ben Stiller's in a movie? Oh my God. And I went by myself.

• 4:22Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 4:22Speaker 02

And it was in this neighborhood, uh, because for some rea- I, I lived in Brooklyn, but this was where, maybe it was, I snuck out of work or something. And, uh, and I, I sat in this packed theater by myself and it was like one of the best movie going experiences ever. Cause I loved that movie.

• 4:40Mark Normand?

  I, I can quote it.

• 4:41Speaker 02

When I first saw it, I was crying in the theater, sitting in, by myself between like, you know, it was packed.

• 4:47Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 4:48Speaker 02

Cause that's when theaters were packed, when a movie came out and people were excited, like they packed theaters.

• 4:52Mark Normand?

Oh yeah. And, and it was real, that was back when water cooler talk. Everybody was talking about the, the jizz and the hair and the Frank's and beans and the, like the Brett Favre of it all.

• 5:02Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 5:03Mark Normand?

That was a, that was a hell of a time.

• 5:04Speaker 02

  Matt Dillon.

• 5:05Mark Normand?

  Oh.

• 5:06Speaker 02

Such a killer in that movie.

• 5:08Mark Normand?

  Oh yeah.

• 5:09Speaker 02

And it's all killers, like Lee Evans kills it and like Chris Elliott, like everyone's amazing.

• 5:13Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 5:13Speaker 02

  But yeah, but Matt Dillon.

• 5:14Mark Normand?

He stole it. Uh, forehead like a drive-in movie theater, yeah.

• 5:19Sam Morril?

Oh, it's also amazing, cause I saw, we, we were on the road once, we downloaded, I guess, like the extended version of it. And the scenes they chose to cut were exactly right. Like they just.

• 5:28Speaker 02

  Oh, interesting.

• 5:29Sam Morril?

They just kinda disrupted the momentum. It was one of those things where they just, they nailed it.

• 5:34Speaker 02

Yeah. That's good. That's reassuring when that happens.

• 5:37Sam Morril?

Yeah. Well, you know, some comedies, they, they.

• 5:40Speaker 02

  They don't nail it.

• 5:40Sam Morril?

  I love it. I love a tight comedy. I love a 90-minute comedy.

• 5:43Speaker 02

You gotta keep it tight. I remember when we were shooting those Hangovers and, and we'd be shooting scenes like that might. We shoot, you shoot out a sequence, but we'd be doing the scenes that are like towards the end of the movie. And Todd Phillips, the director, was always just like, faster guys, faster. And we're like, well, we're just trying to get the lines out. He's like, it's the end of the movie. It's the race to the finish, which was his, he kept saying, it's the race to the finish. Uh, which I think he said was something that Ivan Reitman told him.

• 6:11Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 6:12Speaker 02

It's like a critical sort of comedy thing. When you're, when you're making a comedy, that third act, it's a, it's just like.

• 6:21Speaker 02

  Guns blazing.

• 6:22Sam Morril?

  Interesting.

• 6:22Speaker 02

  You gotta go.

• 6:23Mark Normand?

You can't go Irishman on a comedy. You know, you gotta keep it tight.

• 6:27Sam Morril?

They're just old in a prison, dying. Isn't that funny?

• 6:30Mark Normand?

Although that scene where he beat up the guy was pretty good.

• 6:32Sam Morril?

  That was pretty funny.

• 6:33Mark Normand?

  But, yeah.

• 6:33Sam Morril?

  He did not look young.

• 6:34Mark Normand?

Seinfeld too, you know, they were like, here's a, here's a Brink's truck full of money. Make eight more seasons. And he's like, now we're cutting it here. The show's over. It's all about timing. You gotta know when to wrap it up.

• 6:44Sam Morril?

Yeah, it's. Hangover, did you know when you're making that, you're like, this is really good?

• 6:49Speaker 02

I think, uh, we knew that we were having like an unprecedented amount of fun. And so we all felt like we were on to something. There's never, at that point, none of us were very well known. So there was no sense that like, oh, this is gonna be a hit. But we definitely knew we were making something that we were gonna love.

• 7:11Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 7:12Speaker 02

And be proud of and, and we would hope people would see it.

• 7:16Speaker 02

And honestly, I think that energy is what, ah, it's like, like anything. I, I think that carries projects is like when you can feel that the team involved, whether it's, it's the cast and, and sometimes the crew and everybody is like, when you can feel that, that they're psyched.

• 7:36Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 7:37Speaker 02

It doesn't matter if it's a comedy or a, or a drama or an action movie. When you can feel the cast, I would, I would, I would say the same thing about The Office. Like, everybody on The Office loved The Office and loved making it and loved being in, in that conference room together and cracking each other up. And that I think is like this intangible magic that makes the product good. And it's like, it's like that love that a cast brings to something, uh, is, is what sort of opens the door for an audience to, to feel that way.

• 8:11Mark Normand?

You can feel it on like those Seth Rogen, Franco movie. They're, they're actual friends, you can feel it, not anymore.

• 8:16Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 8:16Mark Normand?

But they're actual friends and you can feel it in the, in the movie, for sure.

• 8:20Speaker 02

  This is the end.

• 8:21Mark Normand?

  Yes, Pineapple Express.

• 8:23Speaker 02

I lo-, yeah, I love those movies.

• 8:25Sam Morril?

They're so good. That was like a crazy stretch. Like, we really took for granted. I was sick a couple of weeks ago when I Love You Man just came on and I was like, oh shit, this is funny. I just forgot these are just all funny.

• 8:33Speaker 02

Oh my God, Sandberg in that movie.

• 8:35Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 8:36Speaker 02

  Is just.

• 8:37Mark Normand?

He's great. We used to have comedies. It was like a thing.

• 8:40Speaker 02

I mean, that was, but that was like a crazy amount of hit comedies at once.

• 8:43Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 8:44Speaker 02

Like forgetting Sarah Marshall was on too. I was like, this is hilarious.

• 8:47Mark Normand?

Isn't that weird? Cause my agent's always like comedies don't play well in theaters now. And you're like, but that's what's supposed to be a theater. Comedy and horror are great for theater or for movie theaters. Like it should be where.

• 8:56Speaker 02

  Horror still hits, I feel.

• 8:57Mark Normand?

Horror hits, but you know, they say comedy in a movie theater is no go anymore.

• 9:01Speaker 02

Which is insane because you would think like, like comedy clubs are, are a thing because people like to laugh together.

• 9:10Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 9:10Sam Morril?

That's what, I think that's what, I think that might be hurting it. Is how many live acts are on the road right now? I think people are like, yeah, I'll just go see this live show.

• 9:18Speaker 02

  Wait, was it?

• 9:19Sam Morril?

I think there's so many live shows in any city at a given time that they're like, instead of going, and there aren't that many comedies being made. So I think those two combined, how many comedies are in the theater? First off, and then secondly, like, oh, there's eight comedians doing a show. There's all these comedy clubs or theater act comics, you know?

• 9:35Mark Normand?

And at a comedy club, you're gonna get the Elon Musk jokes. You're gonna get the Trump jokes. You're gonna get that. I think people are craving that because the news is so bonkers. Yeah. And you're not gonna get that with a comedy movie.

• 9:46Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 9:46Mark Normand?

It's just a movie about a lady who's autistic and gay or whatever.

• 9:50Speaker 02

  All right.

• 9:52Sam Morril?

We hope it comes back. We, we're, we're trying to make a movie right now. We, we want comedies. I love seeing a comedy movie in a theater.

• 9:58Mark Normand?

Oh, yeah. Especially a black theater.

• 10:00Sam Morril?

  Yes.

• 10:01Mark Normand?

Nothing better. I saw American Pie in a, in a black theater and that was, that added an element. Popcorn flying, riffing, you know, their own jokes. It was great.

• 10:09Sam Morril?

I saw 12 Years a Slave in a white theater. Not a good experience. Oh, boy. It wasn't good.

• 10:15Sam Morril?

But when you were on The Office, we were talking about that before, Matt and I were talking about that before you came here about how you showed up. It was season three, right?

• 10:21Mark Normand?

  Correct, yeah.

• 10:21Sam Morril?

That's a hard thing to be the guy who shows up and becomes a fan favorite.

• 10:27Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 10:28Sam Morril?

I think about like Married with Children and when Jefferson showed up and people wanted to hate that guy.

• 10:32Speaker 02

  Ah.

• 10:33Sam Morril?

You know what I mean? I know it's a different show, but like, I think that guy was great on Married with Children.

• 10:36Mark Normand?

  Ted Mcginnley?

• 10:37Sam Morril?

  Yeah, he's hilarious.

• 10:38Mark Normand?

Yeah, he was in a bunch of comedies.

• 10:39Sam Morril?

Um, but yeah, you, I mean, you're kinda like the enemy of Dwight. You show up and you become like, you just embrace it, man. It's great.

• 10:48Mark Normand?

  Tough shoes.

• 10:49Sam Morril?

Yeah, you know, it was, um.

• 10:52Speaker 02

There was something about that moment where

• 10:58Speaker 02

the show had decided to kind of bounce Jim over to this Stanford branch. And so that obviously needed a cast. It wasn't, we weren't introduced as an intrusion into Dunder Mifflin. We were sort of introduced as this kind of satellite thing. And I think that made it easier for fans to sort of digest. And then I'll also, I would also just share that, that the cast and the writers and the whole sort of office community, when, when we showed up, and when I say we, I mean,

• 11:38Speaker 02

Chip Estley, who played our boss there in the, in the Stanford branch, and Rashida, you know, when we showed up as these new characters, we were so embraced by the cast. And everyone, you know, I think there are situations where like, cast members can feel threatened by new people, or there can be sort of bad mojo, or bad energy, like, hold on, we're just a czar show. But there was none of that. And the writers were so excited and to welcome us. And again, like, that's the energy that we're feeling, and the cast is bringing, and audiences feel that too. I think, I think all of that sort of comes through the screen.

• 12:21Speaker 02

And it was, it made it so much easier. I felt like we just got landed in this nice, warm basket.

• 12:30Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 12:30Speaker 02

It was, it was, it was amazing.

• 12:33Mark Normand?

I mean, it's, the show is just never not on. My wife watches it to fall asleep. No offense, that sounds bad. But like, it's just such a-

• 12:40Speaker 02

  It's a comfortable, it's a comfort watch. It is.

• 12:43Mark Normand?

Yeah. Now, wait, I didn't know you did stand-up. I'm an idiot.

• 12:46Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 12:47Mark Normand?

  Really?

• 12:47Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 12:48Mark Normand?

  In New York?

• 12:49Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 12:49Mark Normand?

Oh, wow. Was that, was that the entrance to comedy?

• 12:53Speaker 02

That was, that was the on-ramp.

• 12:54Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 12:55Speaker 02

Yeah, because I, I, you know, like everybody else, I wanted to be on Saturday Night Live, or, you know, something like that. And, and so I moved here right after college. I went to college in Ohio, and I moved here. And almost right away, just started, I mean, at that time-

• 13:17Speaker 02

I don't even think the internet was much of a thing. This was like 97, so there was internet, but it was like, um, I found all the, uh.

• 13:28Sam Morril?

  Holy shit.

• 13:29Mark Normand?

What year are we talking here?

• 13:30Speaker 02

Well, so that was my, that was my big appearance on.

• 13:33Sam Morril?

You look like Dwight here. This is crazy.

• 13:36Speaker 02

  Right.

• 13:37Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 13:38Speaker 02

  Baggy jeans.

• 13:39Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 13:40Mark Normand?

You made it to TV, so this is, you got there.

• 13:43Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 13:44Sam Morril?

When was Daily Show? When did that start?

• 13:46Speaker 02

  That started 2002.

• 13:48Sam Morril?

  That's crazy.

• 13:49Speaker 02

  For me, yeah.

• 13:50Sam Morril?

That cast that you were on is like, that's like the 70s SNL cast before the Daily Show. That's a crazy cast, dude.

• 13:57Mark Normand?

Who are we talking, John Oliver or was that a pre?

• 13:59Speaker 02

Oh, no, very, very, very pre-John. When I started.

• 14:03Mark Normand?

  Lewis Black?

• 14:04Speaker 02

Well, actually, when I, when I first started, Steve Carell was still on it.

• 14:07Mark Normand?

  Oh, wow.

• 14:08Speaker 02

  So, um.

• 14:09Mark Normand?

  There it is.

• 14:10Speaker 02

So we overlapped. There's a cast photo from that time. Might be that big one there. Yeah, that's the one.

• 14:16Sam Morril?

Did that have anything to do with you getting on The Office or just a coincidence?

• 14:18Mark Normand?

  It all helps.

• 14:19Speaker 02

Yeah, I think it's all, but that's the one that I was, uh.

• 14:24Sam Morril?

  Wait, zoom in a little.

• 14:24Speaker 02

It was like right when I started. So you had Lewis Black, Mo Rocca, Colbert, Carell, Nancy Walls.

• 14:31Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 14:32Speaker 02

  Uh, um.

• 14:33Mark Normand?

I had a thing for her.

• 14:35Speaker 02

Uh, Rob Cordrea, obviously, and, uh, DeCario.

• 14:39Mark Normand?

  Ah.

• 14:40Speaker 02

  Right?

• 14:40Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 14:41Sam Morril?

And Etelle was on like right before that, right?

• 14:43Speaker 02

  Yeah, there were, uh.

• 14:44Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 14:45Speaker 02

Yeah, and, uh, uh, who, I think Vance DeGeneres was also I overlapped with for a minute. Um, A. Whitney Brown.

• 14:57Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 14:58Speaker 02

Who had been on Saturday Night Live and was on this, was on The Daily Show.

• 15:02Mark Normand?

Got so white. Isn't that wild? It's a different time.

• 15:05Speaker 02

It is very wild. Very, very much so. Uh.

• 15:08Mark Normand?

  It's like a diner in the 50s.

• 15:10Speaker 02

  But I think that's two, that's around 2000. That must be 2002.

• 15:15Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 15:15Speaker 02

That was right when I started. I couldn't be more thrilled to be in that photo. I remember that photo shoot. I just was like, I can't believe I'm sitting here with these people.

• 15:24Sam Morril?

I remember Colbert and Corral did Stephen versus Stephen. That was like a crazy era of just, yeah, really funny.

• 15:30Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 15:31Mark Normand?

  How much talent there.

• 15:31Speaker 02

But then after that, it, it pared down to this. When it, then there was a, a good, like, two years where it was just Sam B., Rob Cordery, Stephen Colbert, and me as the, as like the four correspondents.

• 15:45Mark Normand?

Was that scary? Cause they kept whittling down? It was like a reality show. You get eliminated.

• 15:49Speaker 02

Um, it was thrilling. I mean, we, we were, we were so busy. It was, that was also a time when, when we just did field pieces relentlessly. And that's honestly what kind of crushed New York for me. I was in and out of the city so much on the basic cable budget travel. Uh, so it was like La Quinta Inns on, uh, you know, Southwest Airlines to Homer, Alaska, or like all over the country, in and out of, uh, New York City airports, which if you do constantly, because the New York City airports are, are hard to get to.

• 16:29Mark Normand?

Yeah, we know. We're on the road every week.

• 16:32Speaker 02

  It's just, it's, it, it's crushing.

• 16:34Mark Normand?

  It's crushing.

• 16:35Speaker 02

  Over time.

• 16:36Mark Normand?

Yeah. Making those flights, security, the terminal, what seat am I in? It's brutal.

• 16:40Sam Morril?

Oh, and you get sick all the time. Yeah. I, I think about the early years of the road and how grueling they were, that now when you have any comfort in travel, I'm like, this is incredible. You know, you, you really, you really don't take anything for granted.

• 16:53Speaker 02

  Yeah. But it was, uh.

• 16:55Mark Normand?

  So you made it.

• 16:56Speaker 02

  Heady days.

• 16:57Mark Normand?

Yeah. But you did it. You, you did the stand-up. You got the, uh, the premium blend. Then you got the Daily Show. This is like a textbook career here.

• 17:04Speaker 02

Yeah. And there was a lot of improv mixed in there. After, after about three years of like grinding and stand-up, the Upright Citizens Brigade was emerging.

• 17:13Mark Normand?

  I remember.

• 17:13Speaker 02

And, uh, I was like, I wanna, I wanna join that, that crowd. That, they're doing really cool stuff. So I did that and it was kind of a mix there.

• 17:24Mark Normand?

Wow. Man, what a, what a career. What a run.

• 17:29Mark Normand?

  That is wild.

• 17:30Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 17:30Mark Normand?

Do you remember any old bits?

• 17:32Speaker 02

  Old stand-up bits?

• 17:33Mark Normand?

Yeah, give me, give me like your, your big A, uh, foolproof, bulletproof, never failed zinger.

• 17:41Speaker 02

  Uh, let's see, uh...

• 17:43Mark Normand?

No N-word, please. Try to keep it clean.

• 17:46Speaker 02

So, so, this, this is one that I, that was pretty reliable. Um, uh, there was an ad for, um, I think like you, American Airlines at the time, and the slogan was, "The way you'd run an airline." And I was like, "The way I'd run an airline. I don't know how to fly a plane. I don't know." You'd get on an airplane and it'd be like, "Ladies and gentlemen, uh, I gotta be honest with you, I have no idea how to fly this plane." "Is it cool if we just drive to Phoenix?"

• 18:20Speaker 02

Uh, "Just so you know, you'll all be getting lap dances in about five minutes and, uh, yeah, just, you know, on and on."

• 18:27Mark Normand?

  That's great. That's cool.

• 18:28Sam Morril?

Wow. Do you feel like your voice as a stand-up is similar to the characters you play in movies and stuff?

• 18:34Speaker 02

Maybe a little bit of, uh, maybe a little bit like Andy Bernard. You know, one of my big influences was Brian Regan.

• 18:44Mark Normand?

  Oh, sure.

• 18:44Speaker 02

So, the way that Brian would, the way, I loved Brian's, and, and Gaffigan does this a lot too, like, they kind of play idiot versions of themselves. So they'll set up a story, and then they'll kind of play themselves as the, as the dolt in the story, and their voice changes a little bit. And so, I kind of took after that. Like, that was, that was, I, I just loved that type of joke writing and, and storytelling. And, uh, and so, yeah, that, the voice that I would take on... As the sort of idiot version of myself may have kind of crept into Andy Bernard a bit. Um, but otherwise, no, I don't think so like Stu.

• 19:27Speaker 03

You still have like stand up thoughts?

• 19:30Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah, yeah, for sure.

• 19:31Speaker 03

We do a thing like called working on any bits.

• 19:33Speaker 02

Yeah, I got a whole list.

• 19:35Mark Normand?

  Oh, man.

• 19:35Speaker 02

  On my phone, yeah.

• 19:36Mark Normand?

  Shut up.

• 19:37Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 19:37Mark Normand?

  Really?

• 19:37Speaker 02

  I keep it going.

• 19:39Speaker 03

  Can we talk about something?

• 19:40Speaker 02

Sure, yeah, I, I, uh, I do, I still do stand up occasionally like at, uh, mostly at, at Largo in, in LA.

• 19:48Mark Normand?

  Sure.

• 19:49Speaker 02

But, um, yeah, you wanna, let's see.

• 19:51Mark Normand?

  Oh, boy.

• 19:52Speaker 02

I'll give you a dry run on a couple of things.

• 19:55Mark Normand?

Oh, by the way, check out the book Snafu.

• 19:57Speaker 02

Oh, yeah. Can we talk about the book?

• 19:59Mark Normand?

  Sorry, sorry.

• 20:00Speaker 02

Guys, I'm on my book tour for God's sake.

• 20:02Mark Normand?

  We got the book here.

• 20:03Speaker 02

I'm telling you my, my dumb jokes that I, that I, that I put no thought into. I've just put in a little, meanwhile, I spent years pouring my heart into this book. We can do both, we can do both.

• 20:14Mark Normand?

You wanna do book first? You wanna do stand up first?

• 20:16Speaker 02

Let's talk book. Let's tease the stand up.

• 20:18Mark Normand?

  Okay.

• 20:19Speaker 02

And talk book. It's an awesome idea for a book. It's, it's, it's really cool, man. It's, uh, it's, it spun out of my, my podcast. I started a podcast a couple of years ago called Snafu. And, uh, and it's, it's really, really, I'm insanely proud of it. It's, it's, uh, there are three seasons out now. The, uh, each season is like a deep dive, uh, it's like a heavily produ-, like immersive audio production into one major historical snafu. A snafu being a disaster.

• 20:53Mark Normand?

  Is it a, a?

• 20:54Speaker 02

  It's an acronym.

• 20:55Mark Normand?

  Acronym, sorry.

• 20:56Speaker 02

Uh, something fucked up? Yeah, situation normal, all fucked up.

• 20:59Mark Normand?

Oh, it's like, it's like foo bar.

• 21:01Speaker 02

  Exactly.

• 21:02Mark Normand?

  God.

• 21:02Speaker 02

  Yeah. Or foo boo. Yeah.

• 21:05Mark Normand?

Foo bar, fucked up beyond all recognition.

• 21:07Speaker 02

  Exactly.

• 21:08Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 21:08Speaker 02

And, uh, and so the, the, the podcast, uh, was just this sort of marriage of my kind of nerdy love of history with, well, like what's, what's funny about history? Well, obviously the screw ups are funny.

• 21:24Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 21:26Speaker 02

And so, you know, we built this great team. We've got, I've got a bunch of researchers that help out with the podcast and help put it together, audio producers and, and then also we just had a flood of ideas and I was like, I'm putting this in a book. And the book is, is different from the podcast in that, in that it's a book and not a podcast. But it's different because it's just basically a compendium of snafus as opposed to like a deep dive into one thing.

• 21:58Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 21:58Speaker 02

So every chapter, there's 31 chapters and they're all different. Each one's a new, a different snafu. So it's perfect for to just like pick up at the beach and open up anywhere and just read a chapter. Can you tease a snafu for us? Oh, hell yeah.

• 22:11Mark Normand?

  All right.

• 22:12Speaker 02

What's a great snafu? There's so many great ones. So it's divided into decades, 50s to the present. And, and let's see.

• 22:22Mark Normand?

Got to be a lot of military snafus.

• 22:23Speaker 02

Yeah, it's a lot of like CIA, FBI, one of my all time favorites. Pearl Harbor, that was a snafu. Big snafu. No, but that's actually, you bring up a good point. So there, you're not going to find a lot of things in the book that you've heard of. So that was part of my like curatorial decision was to kind of like not do World War II.

• 22:45Speaker 02

But, or like the Titanic. It's more kind of obscure stuff. So. So funny, I think of the Titanic as a snafu. Yeah. Whoops. Whoopsie. Wow.

• 22:57Speaker 02

So let's see, the, the, in the, in the 1950s, the Cold War is heating up. The Soviets and, and America are both trying to flex nuclear power, right? So somebody in the CIA gets this brilliant idea, maybe we can shoot a nuclear missile at the moon. And detonate, you know, a nuclear, a nuclear explosion on the moon. The Soviets will see it and they'll be shaking in their boots, right? Cause they'll be so rattled that we can, we have the firepower to hit the moon with a nuclear weapon.

• 23:35Mark Normand?

  That's a movie premise.

• 23:36Speaker 02

  Yeah, well.

• 23:37Mark Normand?

  Strange love shit.

• 23:39Speaker 02

It is. It's literally strange love. And there's a lot of stuff, like I'll tell you more. It's like very strange love level stuff. A lot of this stuff feels like it was written by comedy writers, but it is sadly real. And Carl Sagan, when he was right out of grad school, worked on this particular project. They eventually realized, you know what? It's probably not a good idea because it, if anything goes wrong, if we miscalculated at all, it's very probable that the missile could slingshot around the moon and come back and hit the earth. Uh, it was, they also realized that it really probably wouldn't even be visible from the earth. You know, the, the thinking being, it'd just be like a little dust cloud or something.

• 24:22Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 24:23Speaker 02

Uh, but just the idea of nuking the moon and like getting as far as they did is absolutely insane. There's a, there, there's another great story about, um, uh, let's see, oh, the CIA, uh, tried to basically weaponize cats. So, uh, so everyone knows cats are, can hear really well because their ears are kind of that, that cup shape and they can turn, they're directional. So someone hatched the brilliant idea to surgically implant microphones into cats' ears and then train the cats to go and like sit next to bad guys in the park.

• 25:08Speaker 02

So you could listen in and do your espionage.

• 25:11Sam Morril?

Like the scratching sex offenders in the park?

• 25:14Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 25:14Mark Normand?

Every villain has the cat on the lap. You'd get all the info.

• 25:17Speaker 02

I guess so, but, uh, but what they failed to take into account is that, um, it's, uh, it's real hard to train a cat to do, to do pretty much anything.

• 25:28Mark Normand?

So there's no cat in the police or the fire department.

• 25:31Speaker 02

Yeah, there, there are canine units.

• 25:32Mark Normand?

  Exactly.

• 25:33Sam Morril?

  Drug sniffing dogs.

• 25:34Mark Normand?

  Yep.

• 25:35Sam Morril?

I get nervous when I see him at the airport, even though I don't have drugs on me.

• 25:37Mark Normand?

  Same.

• 25:38Sam Morril?

  I get uncomfortable.

• 25:39Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 25:39Mark Normand?

You gotta do that walk and they, they let the dog sniff you. You're like, how do you know where I've been? You know, I could have been at a party last night. But yeah, that's great. It feels very male. I feel like there was a woman, one woman in the room, she'd be like, wait, wait, shooting a rocket at the moon? Come on, fellas.

• 25:53Speaker 02

I think you're 100% right. I totally agree with you. And it does, like, there, there, there's another, I get into all the ways that the CIA tried to assassinate Fidel Castro.

• 26:05Mark Normand?

  Mmm.

• 26:06Speaker 02

Or explored, like, different possibilities. Yeah.

• 26:08Mark Normand?

There were, yeah, that was one of them. But there were over 630 plans.

• 26:16Sam Morril?

  630? What's the weirdest one?

• 26:19Speaker 02

Well, the weirdest one. They tried to train a cat to bite his face off. They...

• 26:26Mark Normand?

  It was a sloped roof.

• 26:29Speaker 02

The weirdest one, okay, so they, they tried to hatch a plan where someone would put thallium salts into his shoes. Now, this is a particular kind of toxin to humans that makes your hair fall out. And the thinking was that if they can get Fidel Castro's beard to fall out of his face, then he will, his, he will lose his manhood and lose his, his leadership over Cuba.

• 26:57Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 26:58Speaker 02

Which is so Looney Tunes. Like, what, it's like, how many steps? But this was, this was explored and even it got to, to the stage of like, almost attempting.

• 27:08Mark Normand?

  Hmm.

• 27:08Speaker 02

And i- i- when you look at this, the list of, of ideas and, and you start to think about how absurd they are and how crazy they are, it really does feel like a comedy writer's room.

• 27:21Mark Normand?

  Totally.

• 27:21Speaker 02

Like, sitting around just pitching the dumbest shit.

• 27:24Mark Normand?

That's where they need to doge, to go in and like, look up all the fucked up, wacky ideas. We're gonna get his beard out, that'll kill his ego.

• 27:32Sam Morril?

I remember hearing something a long time ago about Che Guevara, the doctor said, you, you, you gotta only do two cigars a day, cause it's, it's killing you. And he was, he just started smoking cigars like this long. Like, oh, what a, what a cool move, yeah.

• 27:45Mark Normand?

Damn, that's great. This, I had a baby recently, that was a snafu. But, this is great, I can't wait.

• 27:52Speaker 02

  This is interesting stuff.

• 27:53Mark Normand?

This could be a movie, or like a TV show.

• 27:54Speaker 02

A lot of them could be movies. Yeah. Or a series, like many series. Yeah. Well, I mean, you do a podcast. Or it could be like a, like a history of the world type movie. Yes. Like Mel Brooks style. Yeah. Just do, do all of them in one movie.

• 28:06Mark Normand?

Totally. Alright, well get the book, folks.

• 28:09Speaker 02

  Check it out.

• 28:09Mark Normand?

  And check out the pod.

• 28:10Speaker 02

Snafu. What is it, what's the best place for people to buy it? Uh, basically, today is, well, I don't know when this will air, but today is publication day. It's anywhere you get your books.

• 28:21Mark Normand?

  Okay.

• 28:21Speaker 02

And a really easy place to go is just snafu-book.com.

• 28:26Mark Normand?

  Mmm.

• 28:26Speaker 02

I also did the audiobook, I read every single word.

• 28:29Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 28:30Speaker 02

Was that exhausting? It was, kind of took a long time. Yeah.

• 28:33Mark Normand?

Yeah, you gotta do it in chunks, just so you don't hate yourself.

• 28:36Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 28:37Mark Normand?

  Alright.

• 28:38Speaker 02

Did you ever think you'd write a book? No. I didn't, I, I started, I guess a few years ago, I started to think, I got some funny ideas, I got some fun stuff to say. And it started to become this possibility. And also, like, uh, my agent was kind of like, hey, you can write a book. You ever think about writing a book? I'm like, alright, cause, you know, people write books, and it's, uh, it can be a, a fun outlet, and just another creative outlet, so... It, I didn't have an organizing principle for it. I didn't have, it wasn't a spark.

• 29:13Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 29:13Speaker 02

Until I started working on Snafu, the podcast, and I was like, pretty early on, I was like, there's, there's a book in here. Like, something's gonna come out of this in book form. And here it is.

• 29:23Mark Normand?

You think Hitler's agent did that? Like, you're doing so great, write a book!

• 29:26Speaker 02

  Write a book!

• 29:27Mark Normand?

  And he's like-

• 29:27Speaker 02

  I already did, no one-

• 29:30Mark Normand?

  It's like, wait a minute-

• 29:31Speaker 02

I'm doing water, I've been doing watercolors.

• 29:32Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 29:33Speaker 02

  Nobody likes those.

• 29:37Mark Normand?

Alright, come on, give me one bit, Helms.

• 29:39Speaker 02

  One bit.

• 29:39Mark Normand?

  Give me something.

• 29:41Speaker 02

  Alright.

• 29:41Mark Normand?

And you're, you seem pretty like a clean comic. Were you clean?

• 29:44Speaker 02

Um... I mean, I said bad words.

• 29:48Mark Normand?

  But no, you weren't going.

• 29:50Sam Morril?

Yeah, but well, he also said Gaffigan and Regan. That's why you're thinking clean, right?

• 29:53Mark Normand?

  Maybe, right.

• 29:54Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah. I think I, yeah, I was generally. I did a bunch of like, I did like some corporate shows and college gigs and stuff. And I was, yeah, I was generally pretty clean.

• 30:04Sam Morril?

When you did college, they send you out with other comics?

• 30:06Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah, yeah.

• 30:07Sam Morril?

  Who'd you go out with?

• 30:07Speaker 02

I did a really crazy tour once with Christian Finnegan.

• 30:12Sam Morril?

  Oh, nice.

• 30:13Speaker 02

  And Doug Stanhope.

• 30:15Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 30:16Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 30:16Sam Morril?

Not the three I would have envisioned.

• 30:18Speaker 02

  Yeah, well, it was.

• 30:19Sam Morril?

  We love Doug.

• 30:20Speaker 02

Oh, Doug's what a, what a just wild character. That one was crazy. We went to, I remember we had a stop at Ohio University, I think. Or, no, it was the University of Ohio. And it was Parents Weekend. And if there's anybody you don't want on stage during Parents Weekend at your college, it's Doug Stanhope. Especially in the Midwest, in a conservative.

• 30:50Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 30:50Speaker 02

Area like Ohio. So, he gets on stage and he had, at the time, he was doing a lot of material that was kind of like, like, Christian baiting.

• 31:01Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 31:02Speaker 02

Like, just kind of nitpicking things in the Bible and this and that. And some parents, like, stood up and started to leave, or, you know, some audience people started to leave. And one dad stood up and started to heckle him, but it really turned into this, like, theological debate.

• 31:21Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 31:22Speaker 02

And, and never debate Doug Stanhope on theology or anything. Like, because he's, he, he's just dialed.

• 31:30Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 31:30Speaker 02

He's got it all. He's, and, and he's, he's relentless.

• 31:33Sam Morril?

  And he's quick.

• 31:34Speaker 02

  Yeah, he's so fast.

• 31:35Mark Normand?

  And drunk.

• 31:36Speaker 02

And, and he has a microphone.

• 31:38Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 31:38Speaker 02

Like, you just, like, people should know, you shouldn't argue with comedians because they have microphones.

• 31:44Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 31:45Speaker 02

  That's always a trump card.

• 31:47Sam Morril?

He has one of my favorite lines. I said it when he did our pod, but when he said, when I do comedy, it's like taking you into war, you're not all gonna be here at the end.

• 31:57Sam Morril?

  I love that.

• 31:57Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 31:58Mark Normand?

Also has a book, I believe.

• 32:00Sam Morril?

I think a couple of books.

• 32:01Mark Normand?

Geez, if Doug can write a book.

• 32:03Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 32:03Mark Normand?

  We gotta get to work.

• 32:04Sam Morril?

Well, he's in Bisbee, Arizona. He's not doing sex every night.

• 32:07Mark Normand?

  That's true.

• 32:07Sam Morril?

Oh, there we go. That's a good pick.

• 32:08Mark Normand?

  Oh, God.

• 32:09Speaker 02

Hang on, how recent is that?

• 32:11Sam Morril?

  It's not too long ago.

• 32:12Mark Normand?

  A couple of weeks ago.

• 32:13Sam Morril?

  Yeah, it's awesome.

• 32:13Mark Normand?

  Still cold out.

• 32:22Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 32:23Speaker 02

• 32:24Mark Normand?

  Damn. Boy, you've lived.

• 32:25Speaker 02

• 32:28Mark Normand?

And you're 51. You look amazing.

• 32:29Speaker 02

• 37:53Speaker 02

Also, stopping drinking about a couple of years, like, maybe two years ago, uh, that, for me, drinking was like a pathway to food.

• 38:04Mark Normand?

  Mmm.

• 38:04Speaker 02

Like, I was, people get the munchies with pot, I would get the munchies with a buzz. And I would just love to eat. Like, eating became, was so joyful when I had a buzz, and...

• 38:15Mark Normand?

And you're getting it at 4:00 in the morning, a piece of...

• 38:17Speaker 02

And you're eating the worst shit.

• 38:19Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 38:19Speaker 02

If you, and, and so when I stopped drinking, I just kind of, without realizing it or without any conscious effort, I was just eating less and better, so...

• 38:31Mark Normand?

I didn't know you could, I didn't know you were sober.

• 38:32Speaker 02

Yeah. Well, I'm not, I, just because of the heart stuff.

• 38:35Mark Normand?

Oh, right, right, right, right, right. Damn. So, what are you, an edible guy? What are you, you gotta have a vice?

• 38:40Speaker 02

I know, I'm kinda, I'm kinda searching for a vice.

• 38:42Mark Normand?

  Killing hookers?

• 38:43Speaker 02

  I don't...

• 38:43Mark Normand?

  Gambling?

• 38:45Speaker 02

  I don't, what'd you say, Ambien?

• 38:46Sam Morril?

No, I said gambling, but I didn't know if he was gonna throw out killing hookers before, really.

• 38:50Mark Normand?

Yeah, he heightened you before you thought that out.

• 38:53Sam Morril?

I had it coming out as he said that, I was like, oh, gambling's not that bad. Not as bad as killing hookers, but you could do both in Vegas.

• 38:58Mark Normand?

  That's true.

• 38:59Sam Morril?

  Or Reno.

• 39:00Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 39:02Sam Morril?

  AC.

• 39:02Mark Normand?

  Yeah, that on lock.

• 39:04Speaker 02

I've tried both, they don't do it for me.

• 39:06Sam Morril?

  No.

• 39:08Speaker 02

  But, uh...

• 39:08Sam Morril?

That would suck to kill a hooker and you're like, yeah, not for me.

• 39:10Mark Normand?

  Yeah, it's a waste.

• 39:11Sam Morril?

  Not my thing.

• 39:12Mark Normand?

Yeah, I've tried getting into gambling, but I just lose every time, so it's, I can't get into it. Cause I never win.

• 39:18Sam Morril?

I don't enjoy, I don't enjoy winning as much as I hate losing in gambling.

• 39:22Speaker 02

  Yes, I think you're right.

• 39:24Sam Morril?

I'll do, I can do sports betting, I'll do like, it's in my phone and I still enjoy the game even if I lose. What I do is I bet on the Knicks and I'm just like, alright, if they lose, I'll be mad anyway, so who cares if I lose some money?

• 39:34Mark Normand?

  True.

• 39:35Sam Morril?

But, if I'm playing like Blackjack and I lose a few hundred, I'm just like fucking angry.

• 39:39Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 39:39Mark Normand?

  Same.

• 39:40Sam Morril?

Well, if I win, I'm just like, whatever.

• 39:42Speaker 02

I think, you know, we spent so much time in Vegas on those hangover movies, uh, that I just got kind of bored of being, cause we were just in, we stayed at Caesar's Palace and I would just be like, you're like walking through the casino, you're working your ass off and, and any kind of like, any feeling that like, maybe some gambling would be fun, you're just too exhausted and you're walking by it and, and then you get kind of like, sick of the noise and the smells and the vibe and you're like, I just don't wanna hang out in here. The other thing I realized though, playing, cause I, I enjoyed playing Blackjack, but I realized that, that you don't, that, that the, the whole idea of like, making money gambling is such a myth because,

• 40:26Speaker 02

you don't stop gambling until you lose.

• 40:30Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 40:31Speaker 02

Right? So like, it's something, something like clicked for me where I was just like, why do I never walk away from the table with money? And I was, and, and it just, I was like, because it's not fun until, or it's like, you don't,

• 40:43Mark Normand?

  Cause you're up.

• 40:44Speaker 02

  You don't have that tension.

• 40:45Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 40:46Speaker 02

Until you're losing and you're getting angry. And then you're like, that's when you have to walk away.

• 40:51Mark Normand?

  Exactly.

• 40:51Sam Morril?

When you're drunk and it's like four in the morning and you're just like, they're like, oh, we should... Leave and you're like, alright, let me just throw it all on this next.

• 40:56Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 40:56Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 40:57Sam Morril?

What the hell am I doing?

• 40:58Mark Normand?

I know, just check, cash out, but that's too much work.

• 41:01Sam Morril?

That, it's interesting that you spent all that time in Vegas for The Hangover, because you have to be kind of beaten down by the end of that movie. And you are probably beaten down just from being in Vegas.

• 41:10Speaker 02

  Yes, yes.

• 41:11Mark Normand?

Well, there's a, there's a moment where Vegas gets sad. You know, first you get to Vegas, you're like, whoa, the lights, the noises, the money, and then after a while, you're like, ah, this place is bummed. The respirator, the guy with the limp, the lady and the rascal, there's, there's too many sad things.

• 41:26Speaker 02

And we were shooting in, in like, parts of Vegas that you, you don't go. Like, people don't visit, and, and so we were getting a kind of sense of, of a, of just, I don't know, like, yeah. And a, not, not so much an underbelly, but just kind of like, not fun. Like, this is, these are parts of Vegas that are sort of like mundane city, and it's like, hot and gritty.

• 41:51Mark Normand?

Yes, yes, and fat people, so many pigs.

• 41:55Speaker 02

  Oh, boy.

• 41:56Mark Normand?

Can I ask about Todd Phil?

• 41:58Speaker 02

  Of course.

• 41:59Mark Normand?

The guy is like a phenom.

• 42:01Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 42:01Mark Normand?

And I've listened to so many interviews with him where he hates the studio, because they won't give him any money, they don't believe in him. Like, he had to push for Galifianakis, I heard. And they were like, we don't know this guy, it's not good for the movie, we're trying to sell tickets, and he was like, no, no, he's great. And then, of course, he fucking killed it.

• 42:17Sam Morril?

I mean, the, you say Caesar's Palace, that line is like, I think every time I see it, is this where the real Caesar lives?

• 42:23Speaker 02

Yeah. Is this, is this, is this real Caesar's Palace?

• 42:27Sam Morril?

  It's incredible.

• 42:28Mark Normand?

And it even made Joker, and Joker was awesome, we won't get into the sequel. But, you know, the guy is so great, do you think he's, is he appreciated yet? Does he have the respect?

• 42:39Speaker 02

  Gosh, I think so.

• 42:40Sam Morril?

  I think.

• 42:40Mark Normand?

  I, I hope so, but.

• 42:42Sam Morril?

You're, look at how you're talking about it.

• 42:43Speaker 02

I feel like he's one of the greats.

• 42:45Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 42:45Mark Normand?

  I agree.

• 42:46Speaker 02

And not just in comedy, like, he's like. I mean, I have, I just am so indebted to Todd and I love the man so deeply. But I also, if I step back from that, I'm like, uh, he's like Sidney Pollock level.

• 43:03Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 43:04Speaker 02

  He's like.

• 43:06Mark Normand?

I agree, old school, road trip.

• 43:08Speaker 02

It's that combination of a guy who has, uh, delivered movies for the fans and the, the, the studios make money.

• 43:18Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 43:18Speaker 02

  Which is like a rare.

• 43:20Sam Morril?

Broad comedies that are actually really good.

• 43:22Speaker 02

Yeah, and not just broad comedies, I mean Joker too, like, like these are, these are huge movies and huge endeavors and like, uh, just, uh, you know, creative, it's like you just pour your whole life into these things for years and, um, and he delivers.

• 43:40Mark Normand?

So you think he was obsessed with like the Blues Brothers, the Animal Houses of the world, the Caddyshat, was that his bread and butter as a kid?

• 43:49Speaker 02

I would say yes, but, but he had the kind of, uh, he had a little bit of a, um,

• 43:59Speaker 02

different, ah, what, what am I trying to say? He had, so yes, he, he totally got all those movies and he was very close with Ivan Reitman.

• 44:08Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 44:09Speaker 02

Um, uh, and, and Danny Goldberg, who produced a bunch of, uh, like Animal House and other movies. He produced The Hangover.

• 44:16Mark Normand?

Oh, wow, I didn't know that.

• 44:18Speaker 02

Uh, and, uh, and I, and I, so I think, yes, all those movies informed Todd's comedy. But, but what really set The Hangover apart at that time was that he didn't shoot The Hangover like a comedy. He had the, this like, the foresight to.

• 44:40Speaker 02

Really make the movie feel and look like a gritty, almost like a western or a mobster movie. Or something like an action thriller. And that, that was the sort of aesthetic of the movie.

• 44:54Sam Morril?

You have a missing friend like that is kinda dramatic.

• 44:56Speaker 02

Yeah, and then, so the visual, and then of course Larry Scher was the DP and, and, and he's brilliant. And they're, they're, they're unbelievable force of nature as collaborators. Larry also shot, he shot all three Hangovers. He shot the, both Jokers and I think won an Oscar for the first one, right?

• 45:18Mark Normand?

  Oh, probably.

• 45:18Speaker 02

I think so, but anyway Larry's a genius. So, so they, they just kind of figured out like if we shoot this comedy more like, um, like how Scorsese would shoot a movie or, you know, like Casino. Then, then, then it will heighten the comedy stakes so much more. And nobody had really done that until that moment. I think there was a lot that came after it. That, that now when you look back at The Hangover, it might not feel that unique. Uh, or the look might not feel that unique, but when it came out, it was like, I think that look really startled people in an, in an exciting way.

• 45:57Mark Normand?

Yeah, it feels more legit. I mean, it's kinda like, uh, is this Reitman or Landis? Like, um, what's the movie with Eddie Murphy? Trading Places?

• 46:04Speaker 02

  Oh, Landis, yeah.

• 46:05Mark Normand?

That is like a real movie that happens to be hilarious.

• 46:08Speaker 02

  Yes, you're right.

• 46:09Mark Normand?

  It looks like a movie.

• 46:09Sam Morril?

We were talking 48 Hours the other day, same thing. It's like a gritty movie.

• 46:13Speaker 02

  That's not a comedy. That's like, that's like barely a comedy.

• 46:16Sam Morril?

  But Eddie Murphy's hilarious.

• 46:17Speaker 02

Yes, he has, there's a couple of big funny septuses, but, um, but, uh, but yes, I, yes, Trading Places is, uh, is so funny and so legit looking.

• 46:29Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 46:30Speaker 02

It's a good, it's a very grounded look for an extremely silly movie.

• 46:35Mark Normand?

  Yes, exactly.

• 46:37Speaker 02

  Oh, man.

• 46:37Sam Morril?

What else is like that? What are other movies that are like beautifully shot comedies?

• 46:41Mark Normand?

Coming to America looks pretty cool too. It looks like a real movie, but I think that's Landis as well.

• 46:45Speaker 02

  Uh, Naked Gun? No.

• 46:50Mark Normand?

  Great movie. Airplane? Eh.

• 46:54Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 46:55Mark Normand?

  Trying to think.

• 46:56Sam Morril?

Yeah, I'm thinking like straight comedies though, because there's others you think like, action comedies don't count.

• 47:00Mark Normand?

Hmm, that look good, you're saying?

• 47:02Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 47:04Speaker 02

  Well, uh.

• 47:04Mark Normand?

  McThunder was amazing.

• 47:05Speaker 02

Try, yes, that's a good example.

• 47:07Sam Morril?

  That's a great one.

• 47:07Speaker 02

You know what else, you know what else I think is like that? Is The Holy Grail. Monty Python's The Holy Grail, which Terry Gilliam directed, and he.

• 47:18Sam Morril?

He did like 12 monkeys as well, you know?

• 47:19Speaker 02

Yeah, well, if, if you watch Holy Grail, like, it's grimy, it's like, it looks medieval. Like, they really committed, it's not like Camelot, you know, where everybody's like, these, everybody's in shiny night, like, he, John Cleese, I read, uh, would, would get so exasperated because whenever they were setting up shots, Terry Gilliam was just like, more mud. More mud, everybody's gotta be more covered in mud.

• 47:46Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 47:47Speaker 02

And, uh, and it, it, I don't know, it heightens the comedy. Life of Brian is the same way, it looks like, it's like gritty, Middle Eastern.

• 47:58Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 47:59Speaker 02

It's like, it, it, it looks like.

• 48:01Mark Normand?

  Dusty.

• 48:01Speaker 02

Samaria, you know, like ancient, uh, yeah, look at that, everyone's filthy.

• 48:06Mark Normand?

Yeah, they had a lot of mud on the bottom of those robes.

• 48:08Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 48:09Mark Normand?

  Now, let's get to those.

• 48:10Speaker 02

By the way, that's, that's Terry right there.

• 48:12Mark Normand?

  Where?

• 48:13Speaker 02

He's one of the, the, that, to the right of, um, uh, of, of, of, he's one of the guys with the coconuts.

• 48:20Mark Normand?

  Oh, really?

• 48:21Speaker 02

  That's, that's Terry Gilliam to.

• 48:23Sam Morril?

  Oh, wow.

• 48:23Mark Normand?

  The shorter one?

• 48:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 48:24Mark Normand?

  Oh, wow, that's, I didn't know that.

• 48:26Speaker 02

  Um, yeah, uh, okay.

• 48:29Mark Normand?

Man, those guys had a run.

• 48:30Sam Morril?

Let's try, just one or two.

• 48:32Mark Normand?

Yeah, just pick a good one so we can really shit on you. Make you feel horrible about this segment. Just kidding.

• 48:39Speaker 02

So, uh, so, uh, this, this, these are fragments, right?

• 48:47Mark Normand?

  Okay, okay.

• 48:47Speaker 02

Okay, so, this, uh, time that, um. That I was just walking through an airport and a fan came up to me and she was like, "Oh my god, I'm such a big fan. Do you mind if I hug you?" And I said, "Yes." And, meaning like, "Yes, I mind."

• 49:04Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 49:04Speaker 02

  Like, I do have boundaries.

• 49:06Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 49:07Speaker 02

But she took it as like, "Yes, hug me," and she just went for it. You know, there's something there.

• 49:12Mark Normand?

There's something there. Well, maybe there's a, you know, a gender thing.

• 49:16Speaker 02

Yeah, I gotta, I gotta, I gotta, I gotta set it up a little better.

• 49:18Mark Normand?

Also reminds me of the Seinfeld Kesha.

• 49:21Speaker 02

  I know.

• 49:21Mark Normand?

And she, she couldn't believe it. It was like her brain malfunctioned. Like, "Wait, what? I can't hug you?"

• 49:25Speaker 02

I did kinda feel for her in that moment.

• 49:27Mark Normand?

I did too, but I also loved every second.

• 49:28Speaker 02

Yeah, I loved that he, that he put the hand up.

• 49:31Mark Normand?

Yeah, yeah. He's like, "Hey, I never said you could hug me." She couldn't believe it.

• 49:35Speaker 02

That could be a fight with the wife, too. You just start hugging hot pop stars.

• 49:39Mark Normand?

Good point. Oh, here she comes.

• 49:42Mark Normand?

I don't think hot women here know a lot.

• 49:48Mark Normand?

  Yes. It sucks being rejected.

• 49:50Speaker 02

  I love that so much.

• 49:52Mark Normand?

That's the best. You can let her his big chin in the back.

• 49:55Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 49:55Sam Morril?

Oh my god, that is it. Look at that. He is bloated there.

• 49:58Speaker 02

"No thanks. No thanks," with the hand up. Oh, so perfect.

• 50:02Mark Normand?

And she even tried like, two more times. You're like, "Hey, hey, no means no, sister."

• 50:08Speaker 02

  Oh, Jer.

• 50:09Mark Normand?

  It's his birthday today.

• 50:11Speaker 02

Is it? Oh, there's an, there's an ice cream place in LA that, that's like, it's like an ice cream shop, and it says it's homemade ice cream. And I'm like, "What, what does that mean?" It's a store. This, this is no one's home.

• 50:25Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 50:25Speaker 02

Like, is there, unless you're sleeping in the back and, and you're like, like, is this, do the people who work here, like, live here in the store?

• 50:33Mark Normand?

Yeah. Is there a nana working around the clock?

• 50:36Speaker 02

Yeah, come on. How, how is this home? Or, or do they make it in their apartments?

• 50:41Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 50:41Sam Morril?

It's like when a restaurant says, "Hand-cut fries," and you're like, "Ooh, I don't care how you cut them." "Have they cut? Good. I don't care."

• 50:47Speaker 02

Somebody cut their hand making their fries?

• 50:49Mark Normand?

Or there's a bodega, it's like, "World famous bodega." You're like, "This'll be gone of the year." "There's a cat in here. What are you talking about?"

• 50:55Sam Morril?

Then you get like, "Famous rays," "Famous original rays," "Original rays."

• 50:59Mark Normand?

  Yes, exactly.

• 51:00Sam Morril?

  It's a mess.

• 51:01Speaker 02

There's something to, when I'm helping my kid with, with her homework, and like, I know the answer, and it takes all of the restraint I have not to just be like, like... Four times four is sixteen. Sixteen, sixteen. It's just sixteen. Just write sixteen. Like, there's something in, there's something in me that, that has to, like, prove I know. Like a child's homework.

• 51:23Mark Normand?

  Yes, yes.

• 51:24Sam Morril?

Yeah, you'd be a bad teacher.

• 51:25Speaker 02

  Oh, I'd be terrible.

• 51:26Sam Morril?

  Teachers, they have to guide.

• 51:28Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 51:29Sam Morril?

Most people, you just wanna be like, no, what are you, what are you, fucking dumb?

• 51:31Speaker 02

Yeah. Or, or like when my kid is reading and, you know, she's like, still in learning phase of reading, and you just, she's like struggling with a word, and you're just like, it's pickle. The word is pickle. It's just pickle. And that's, it's not, that's not good parenting.

• 51:46Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 51:47Speaker 03

It must be like when you're struggling, your therapist, and their therapist knows the answer.

• 51:52Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 51:53Speaker 03

He's like, you just wanna fuck your mom.

• 51:54Speaker 02

  Your mother, Jesus.

• 51:56Mark Normand?

  Right, right.

• 51:56Speaker 02

  Exactly.

• 51:57Mark Normand?

I have that. You ever throw on Jeopardy, and it's the kids' Jeopardy? I'm like, oh, I got this. I'm just like, oh, uh, Cleveland, uh, Isosceles, you know, fingerlings.

• 52:07Sam Morril?

Celebrity Jeopardy's an easy one, too.

• 52:08Mark Normand?

Oh, that was, they're dumber than the kids.

• 52:13Sam Morril?

That's a good one. Kids versus the celebs.

• 52:14Mark Normand?

  Ooh.

• 52:15Sam Morril?

  That might be a show.

• 52:16Mark Normand?

I like that. Paris Hilton versus a four-year-old.

• 52:20Sam Morril?

  She gets crushed.

• 52:23Mark Normand?

  These are solid.

• 52:24Speaker 02

Yeah, they're stuff, they're stuff there.

• 52:25Sam Morril?

They're premises. And I like that you're still writing them down here. This is good.

• 52:28Speaker 02

  I had a, this is a fragment.

• 52:32Sam Morril?

  It's pickle.

• 52:33Speaker 02

No, I'm kidding. I think it turns into, uh, I think this would turn into one of those, like, Brian Regan-type performances, but, but I, uh, um, I've been accused of falling asleep with my eyes open, and, and, and, like, snoring with my eyes open,

• 52:48Speaker 02

which is just an incredibly disturbing visual. This is, podcasts are an audio, audio medium, but, but just the idea of, like, seeing someone, like, in an airplane seat, who's just like,

• 53:02Mark Normand?

  That's terrifying.

• 53:03Speaker 02

Do they not know that they're doing, like, cause you look awake.

• 53:06Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 53:06Speaker 02

Like, why are you making that sound?

• 53:07Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 53:08Speaker 02

  It's so disturbing.

• 53:09Sam Morril?

You gotta put on sunglasses, like, at all times.

• 53:11Mark Normand?

Oh, yeah. Or a sleep mask. Do you do that, really?

• 53:15Speaker 02

Uh, it, it, it's, it's happened.

• 53:16Mark Normand?

  That's wild.

• 53:17Speaker 02

  Yeah, it's a weird, yeah.

• 53:19Sam Morril?

  That is creepy.

• 53:19Speaker 02

Like, I think, I, I think I fall asleep with my eyes closed, but then they kind of, like, They, they open a little bit, just a little, it's like a sliver.

• 53:29Speaker 02

  But.

• 53:29Mark Normand?

You'll never get robbed on, if you pass on a park bench, you're like, ah, I got.

• 53:33Speaker 02

Yeah, but if I'm snoring, it's very, it's very confusing.

• 53:35Sam Morril?

That's what Cosby would look for, their eyes open, he's like, I'm innocent.

• 53:38Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 53:41Mark Normand?

  Okay, these are solid, man.

• 53:42Speaker 02

  All right, all right, thanks.

• 53:43Mark Normand?

I got a show tonight, if you want to pop on.

• 53:45Speaker 02

All right, yeah, I'll open for you. No, he's serious, he's got a, he's got the comedy cellar, yeah.

• 53:50Mark Normand?

  It's just 10 minutes.

• 53:52Speaker 02

  That's awesome, I can't do it.

• 53:54Mark Normand?

  Okay.

• 53:55Sam Morril?

Are you doing a ton of press today?

• 53:57Speaker 02

Yes, yeah, I've been bouncing around, I did, um, what did I do? First, I did The View, and, and I did, uh.

• 54:05Mark Normand?

A lot of Cosby jokes there.

• 54:08Mark Normand?

They have a lot of fun.

• 54:10Speaker 02

What else, oh, uh, um. What did I do, Matt? I am totally blind.

• 54:16Mark Normand?

Oh, hey, Matt, we forgot you were here.

• 54:19Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 54:20Mark Normand?

  There's three Matts over there.

• 54:23Speaker 02

Yeah, it's just been, it's a little bit of a whirlwind.

• 54:25Sam Morril?

Nice. We won't, we won't keep you too long, but, uh.

• 54:28Speaker 02

No, this is good, this is like, I got a nice comfy bench, I've got coconut water.

• 54:34Sam Morril?

  This bench is not comfy.

• 54:35Speaker 02

Delightful company, I have a rotary phone. It's very comforting.

• 54:40Mark Normand?

  Pepsi, if you need it.

• 54:40Speaker 02

  Very nostalgic.

• 54:42Mark Normand?

  Get the book, folks.

• 54:43Sam Morril?

  Get the book.

• 54:44Mark Normand?

  Snafu, baby.

• 54:46Speaker 02

Yeah, I'm really proud of it, I truly am like, kind of can't, still can't believe that I wrote a book.

• 54:52Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 54:53Speaker 02

  And, uh, it's, it's funny. It's, it's actually good.

• 54:57Mark Normand?

What's the secret? Do you sit there and go, I'm doing five pages tonight?

• 55:00Speaker 02

  Well, the nice.

• 55:01Mark Normand?

  Doing 10.

• 55:01Speaker 02

The nice thing about this book is that it, it's not a novel, it's like, each chapter is, is a sort of capsule episode.

• 55:08Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 55:08Speaker 02

Uh, and that I find very manageable, like, just doing these tiny chunks. Um, yeah, I don't know if I have a novel in me, that feels, that feels profoundly.

• 55:19Sam Morril?

It's always weird when you find out, like, politicians or someone have like a, like Stacey Abrams in the side hustle.

• 55:24Speaker 02

  Lots of novels.

• 55:25Sam Morril?

She just writes like a ton of books, or like, Jake, doesn't Jake Tapper write?

• 55:29Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 55:29Sam Morril?

  It's so weird.

• 55:30Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 55:30Sam Morril?

It's crazy to me that you're just, you get off, you're. Your new show and then you're like, I'm gonna write a, I'm gonna write a mystery.

• 55:36Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 55:36Sam Morril?

  It's insane to me.

• 55:37Mark Normand?

I assume they hate their spouse, cause that's so time consuming to do TV, like Bill O'Reilly has like thirty-eight books or something. Whoa, who are you, J.K. Rowling?

• 55:47Speaker 02

Who's the famous, uh, legal thriller writer, uh?

• 55:50Mark Normand?

  Grisham?

• 55:50Speaker 02

Grisham. So he started out, he was a lawyer and he started out, uh, waking up at like three in the morning just to, cause he had like had these ideas. And just to get these books out of himself. And then all of a sudden, you know, his publisher's like, uh, you can quit your day job.

• 56:07Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 56:08Speaker 02

And he became one of the great thriller writers.

• 56:10Sam Morril?

  Crazy.

• 56:11Mark Normand?

I think it's either book writing or golf. Those are the two time-consuming adult activities.

• 56:17Sam Morril?

  Or gardening.

• 56:18Mark Normand?

  Gardening's big.

• 56:19Sam Morril?

  Gardening's a big one.

• 56:20Speaker 02

What do we, when, when's your book coming out, guys?

• 56:22Sam Morril?

  We got nothing.

• 56:23Speaker 02

  Oh, I don't believe it.

• 56:25Mark Normand?

Maybe when I'm like break my leg or something in a ski accident, I'll write a book.

• 56:29Sam Morril?

I won't, I'll turn in a Jimmy Stewart in Rear Window. I'll break my leg and I'll just, I'll spy on the neighbors. That's what I'm gonna do. It's a murder. Yeah.

• 56:39Mark Normand?

  The original, True Crime.

• 56:40Sam Morril?

Oh, are we, are we wrapping? Yeah. Buy, buy Ed Holmes, uh, book, listen to his podcast. I'm gonna listen to Snafu too.

• 56:46Mark Normand?

  I will too.

• 56:47Sam Morril?

Yeah, I'm excited to hear this, man. And, uh.

• 56:49Mark Normand?

  I need a new pod.

• 56:50Sam Morril?

Yeah. Awesome, man. So Sam, you have some dates here? Yeah, what do we got? Uh, Rochester coming up, Portchester, uh, Albany. Wait, is this me? Yeah. No, this is Mark. Uh-oh, yep, it's Mark. Yeah. I'm like, I don't think I'm going to Rochester or Portchester this soon. All right, Mark, start here, June sixth.

• 57:08Mark Normand?

I'm going to Rochester, Portchester, Albany, Vermont, Wisconsin, Oregon, San Jose, Hyannis, Mass. At the Melody Tent. Mass Chantucket, that's at, uh, the Foxwoods Casino.

• 57:22Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 57:23Mark Normand?

Uh, Parks Casino in Ben Salem. And then I'm off to Australia for a, a whole run of shows and then New Zealand. What do you got, Sammy?

• 57:30Sam Morril?

When is this coming out? Eighteenth. Let me see, what we, what we got? There we go, start. Okay, so we got Red Bank, New Jersey, Count Basie Theater, the Wilbur in Boston in August. Then we got Irvine Improv in Cali, Oklahoma City. Love going to that club, it's really good. Vegas, I'm doing the Venetian, then we got-

• 57:47Speaker 02

  Busy.

• 57:48Sam Morril?

We're busy. I am going to Rochester, but I'm not doing a thing, I'm doing a bunch of club dates at the club there. And then we got, uh, yeah, oh, Chicago Theater's a fun one, October 4th. Salt Lake City and the big one Carnegie Hall, baby, December 4th, so see you there. Uh, buy Bodega Cat Whiskey.

• 58:05Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 58:05Sam Morril?

Bodega Cat Whiskey dot com, if you got a bar, hit us up. Buy Ed Helms books, Nafu, wherever you get books.

• 58:11Mark Normand?

Any movies in the, in the hopper?

• 58:13Speaker 02

Hmm, yeah, I'm gonna be shooting something this, uh, this summer in Vancouver.

• 58:18Sam Morril?

  Nice.

• 58:18Speaker 02

Wait, who's going to Foxwoods? I think I did Foxwoods.

• 58:21Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah, Connecticut?

• 58:22Speaker 02

It was once I got on The Daily Show, uh, of course, like, and I got, I was on TV, I had a TV gig, so like, my, my stand-up booking options just exploded.

• 58:34Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 58:34Speaker 02

And, uh, and I had a, a booker, and she was like, "Yeah, you can do this, this big casino." It was one of the ones in Connecticut, right?

• 58:41Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 58:41Speaker 02

  I think it was Foxwoods.

• 58:42Mark Normand?

Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun, the other one.

• 58:44Speaker 02

It might have been Mohegan Sun.

• 58:45Mark Normand?

  Okay.

• 58:45Speaker 02

And, uh, and I was like, "Amazing, this is so great." And then I was so busy on the show that I didn't get, I couldn't stay, I couldn't keep doing stand-up-

• 58:56Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 58:56Speaker 02

-to practice for this, like, my first, like, giant headlining gig at a casino. And I'll never forget, I had a really rough set. And, uh, and, because I, I also had, like, almost never done, like, an hour before.

• 59:10Mark Normand?

  Oh, jeez.

• 59:11Speaker 02

And that was, uh, or like, 50 minutes, whatever the required amount. Had a rough set the first night, and I had like, three nights to go. And, uh, the next morning, there was like, a little, like, Mohegan Sun newspaper that they put under everybody's door.

• 59:27Mark Normand?

  Oh, no.

• 59:27Speaker 02

And they written, there was a review of my show-

• 59:29Mark Normand?

  Oh, no.

• 59:31Speaker 02

And it was like, "The rough night for a comedian."

• 59:35Speaker 02

I was like, guys, I got three more shows.

• 59:37Sam Morril?

  Oh, no.

• 59:38Speaker 02

  In your hotel.

• 59:40Mark Normand?

  Boy.

• 59:40Sam Morril?

  Damn.

• 59:41Speaker 02

  Anyway.

• 59:42Mark Normand?

  That'll set the tickets.

• 59:43Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 59:43Sam Morril?

  Well, awesome.

• 59:45Mark Normand?

  Casinos are notoriously rough.

• 59:46Sam Morril?

  They can be tough.

• 59:47Speaker 02

Yeah, because there's no sound. It's like, it's just like a vacuum of.

• 59:51Mark Normand?

Yeah, and they just want people to gamble more. So you're just kind of like a holdoff till they, they, they watch your show, they hate themselves, and then they gamble.

• 1:00:00Sam Morril?

And they hate themselves some more.

• 1:00:01Mark Normand?

  That's true.

• 1:00:02Sam Morril?

Well, thanks for listening, guys. We'll see you next week.

• 1:00:05Mark Normand?

Thank you. Can I hug you?

• 1:00:07Speaker 02

  Get over here.

• 1:00:08Speaker 04

Sunday's the day for my next offender. A bit of Pivarelli, you know the future's close. I've had a little too much bourbon and Norman's talking shit about the fucking Pope. And I get down in the same way. Up on the roof like the cops are coming and naked Samuel is feeling dangerous. I'm out to lunch here in New Orleans. This woman doesn't look like I remember her. And I get down in the same way. We might be true.
