Seth Meyers

It’s the last episode of our New York series 💔and we’re going out with a bang with legendary Late Night host and SNL icon Seth Meyers! Seth popped over to the hotel for breakfast, catered by the fabulous Buba’s Bureka (and some Breads bakery babka too!) We covered everything from SNL, Broadway musicals, his love of Chinese food, pet goats, lockdown meatball obsessions, his mum’s legendary sandwich fillings, and what it’s like hanging out with his 3 year old daughter at restaurants. Seth, you are such a gent and we promise to cook for you when you join us again in London for the full chicken soup and matzo ball experience! A big thank you to The Standard High Line for having us on our New York adventure, and to all our fabulous guests too - think this might need to be a regular trip… Seth’s stand up special ‘Dad Man Walking’ is available to stream on HBO Max in the US and Sky in the UK now. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy https://acast.com/privacy for more information.

Hello and welcome to Tabor Manas. I'm Jessie Ware and I'm here with Mum for our last in our New York series. But it's a goodie.

• 2:39Speaker 06

But it's been the most wonderful week.

• 2:42Jessie Ware?

  We've had the best time.

• 2:43Speaker 06

Thank you to Alice, Luca and Tully for being a brilliant team.

• 2:46Jessie Ware?

And who made it all happen. And thanks to the Standard High Line for having us.

• 2:50Speaker 06

  Magnificent views.

• 2:51Jessie Ware?

Old Liberty isn't as much of you today, but we can still see her.

• 2:55Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 2:56Jessie Ware?

And we've just had the best week and we're going to go out with a bang.

• 3:01Speaker 06

Oh gosh, I've been so looking forward to meeting this man.

• 3:04Jessie Ware?

  He is.

• 3:06Speaker 06

  He's a legend, Jess.

• 3:06Jessie Ware?

He's a legend. He's late night New York. Whether you watched SNL back in the early noughties or you watch his show now, Late Night with Seth Meyers, he's always on your screen, smiling with his gorgeous smile and big blue eyes and saying something funny.

• 3:24Speaker 06

  Award winning.

• 3:25Jessie Ware?

He's also just done an HBO special called Dad Man Walking, which is all about him and family. He's been in movies. He has two podcasts. He does one with the Lonely Island guys from SNL where they talk about kind of memories from SNL and they just have a chat. And he also does one with his brother. It's called Family Trips with the Meyers Brothers. And he's just, I remember when I've been on his show a couple of times, he makes a load of time for you. I was completely terrified. And he's just a very kind, lovely person. And I've always been such a fan of him. And it feels really nice to sign off New York City with Seth Meyers, who's.

• 4:02Speaker 06

  It's really New York City.

• 4:03Jessie Ware?

Yeah. So it's the end of the week and we're doing an early, well, we're doing a morning podcast. So I didn't want to knock on poor Jake Cohen's door for the Seven o'clock in the morning. Yeah, like seven o'clock in the morning, when he's probably been out clubbing the night before. So we decided to order in, which is quite New York of us. And we went to this amazing pastry shop with Benny Blanco and a big host of other fabulous new friends. And it's a new opening called Buba, and it's Bureka, and they're delicious. And Ben Gingy, whose shop it is, is a force of nature. And I just wanted to, well, give Seth Meyers a new taste in town.

• 4:47Jessie Ware?

So we've asked Ben to come on and introduce himself. We have Ben Gingy. Well, this is how all your friends call you, but your name is Ben.

• 4:54Speaker 02

My name is Ben, Ben Simantov.

• 4:56Jessie Ware?

  Hello, Ben Simantov.

• 4:57Speaker 02

But I always want to be a Gingy. I feel that Gingy, like Gingy is the word in Hebrew, we say ginger, redhead.

• 5:04Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 5:05Speaker 02

And yes, and Gingy is kind of like bring always like association with like big personality, like, you know, like colorful personalities. And I always want people to call me that. I'm not ginger.

• 5:16Jessie Ware?

No, I was gonna say you're not, you're not anything.

• 5:18Speaker 02

But I am bald, so like the moment that I lost my hair and my beard is pretty reddish.

• 5:23Jessie Ware?

Your beard is a good thing.

• 5:25Speaker 02

So my dad was like, you can call yourself Gingy and owns it. No one will say anything.

• 5:29Jessie Ware?

I love it. And what you lack in your hair, you make up for in your absolutely huge beard. It's an amazing beard.

• 5:36Speaker 02

Thank you. Thank you. My daughter, my daughter, for the first couple of months of her life, she thought that men are not growing hair on their head, only on their face. So like everyone she would see, she would be like, is that a woman? And I was like, no, it's actually a man and he also grows hair on the head.

• 5:51Jessie Ware?

You are, so for people that don't know who Ben Gingy is, you are a baker.

• 5:55Speaker 02

  I am a baker, yes.

• 5:56Jessie Ware?

And you have a new pastry shop.

• 6:00Speaker 02

  Yes, Buba Bureka.

• 6:02Jessie Ware?

Buba Bureka, what we had on last Saturday, and we've talked about it, and it was such a great morning. There were about 20 of us and you call everyone queen and you say, hello, my queen. And it's like the best energy in your pastry shop. It's also got the biggest line, everyone's queuing for these Bureka. Tell us about how Bubba came about.

• 6:23Speaker 02

Wow, where do I start? Bubba, it's our first shop, our first Bureka dedicated pastry shop in New York City. You know, in my culture, Bureka is our pizza. It's exactly the association like that people are making when they want to like what we call in Hebrew, close a corner. When you're like not fully hungry, you're on the go, you're like grabbing something to the office.

• 6:46Jessie Ware?

  Fill the gap.

• 6:48Speaker 02

Fill the gap. We, I, I, I just love the, the ring of like closing a corner, maybe just for me as I'm translating it, it sounds good.

• 6:54Jessie Ware?

  Closing the corner.

• 6:55Speaker 02

But anyway, you know, on the way out from a club, late night munchies, like it's always, there is an occasion for Bureka, like there is an occasion for pizza. And yeah, we thought that the street food scene in New York City is a little bit of lacking the grab and go, like the fast, you know, serving. And we are excited to be a part of this scene.

• 7:17Jessie Ware?

And you, and you've collaborated with Gaddy, who is Bread's Bakery, which is quite an institution in New York, isn't it?

• 7:23Speaker 02

Absolutely, one of the only ones. Bread's Bakery, yes, Gaddy is our, one of the partners and we couldn't be more grateful to have him to support us with everything we do. Where did you learn to bake? Is your dad a baker? Um, I worked in restaurants for years as a chef, um, not any relation to baking. And when I moved to Italy, um, I just started baking and got addicted and obsessed. And since then, I'm, yeah, I'm only baking.

• 7:50Jessie Ware?

How many Bureka do you do a day until you sell out? Cause you close at two thirty, I think. Is it two thirty?

• 7:56Speaker 02

We are trying to get to two thirty, never, never been able to do it.

• 7:59Jessie Ware?

  Could you sell out?

• 7:59Speaker 02

Exactly. We are, we are baking as many as we can, couple of hundreds a day.

• 8:03Jessie Ware?

So you've, you've given us, um, thank you very much for doing a delivery in person and you've given us all your flavors, I think.

• 8:10Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 8:11Jessie Ware?

And take us through the flavors that you've got. You've got four flavors, haven't you?

• 8:15Speaker 02

Yes. So Bureka usually is coming with traditional flavors as cheese, like kind of farmer cheese, potato.

• 8:21Jessie Ware?

  Yep.

• 8:22Speaker 02

And spinach. Those are the classics. So we kept the cheese as classic as we can. And the potato, we are doing with caramelized shallots. The spinach, we wanted to do something that will be more unique and more approachable for, as we said, Americans that are not familiar with that flavour. So we did a spinach artichoke dip.

• 8:40Jessie Ware?

Well, which is very popular in New York as well. They love a spinach artichoke dip.

• 8:43Speaker 02

And this is indeed the best seller burritos in our shop.

• 8:46Jessie Ware?

  Oh, right, okay.

• 8:47Speaker 02

And we thought what will be the fourth flavour and what is like America for us and corn. We figured out, yes, so we went with sweet corn, beautiful, smooth corn.

• 8:57Jessie Ware?

  Delicious.

• 8:59Speaker 02

With cheese, it's beautiful. Yeah, going all together with all the fixings, freshly grated tomatoes, my grandfather's schug, which is our take on salsa verde.

• 9:08Jessie Ware?

It's delicious. And I love the hard boiled egg that you have too and the pickles and the olives. It's delicious.

• 9:14Speaker 02

You know, my, like, my vision was that the box will be so small and so tight that you open it like a jewellery box and it will just like all shine to your face with colours and flavours and.

• 9:25Jessie Ware?

  It's doing that, exactly.

• 9:26Speaker 06

  Thank you so much.

• 9:27Jessie Ware?

Thank you for popping by and thank you for giving us the best, best delivery and we can't wait to give them to Seth Meyers, who's coming up on the show.

• 9:44Jessie Ware?

  Seth Meyers.

• 9:45Speaker 07

I'm so happy to be here, but I do want to establish something really quick. I dream of having the opportunity to go to England again. It's been a very long time and obviously I have a job and a family. But I do, I would like a full version of this where you guys make me a meal. Okay, so and again, I could blow it, but I promise to bring more.

• 10:03Jessie Ware?

You're not gonna blow it Seth because you are fab.

• 10:05Speaker 06

Yeah, we will definitely have you over and I'll make chicken soup and matzah.

• 10:09Speaker 07

I've begged, I would love that. I've begged of Graham Norton that I can be a guest on his show and now I am begging of you, so maybe I can try to.

• 10:15Jessie Ware?

Did you get the Graham Norton?

• 10:17Speaker 07

Graham has been on my show a couple of times.

• 10:19Jessie Ware?

  He's fab.

• 10:19Speaker 07

The best. And, but again, that is sort of pinnacle talk show, I believe, is being a guest on his show and he has said I can do it.

• 10:26Jessie Ware?

So, yeah, it usually goes like Graham Norton, table manners, do you know what I mean? So like if you're doing the promo run, you'll, you'll, you'll come over.

• 10:34Speaker 07

Well, it's like top of the, top of TV, top of pod. Like you guys are both, I feel like you're one, one out.

• 10:39Jessie Ware?

You know about podcasts, you've got two.

• 10:41Speaker 07

I do, and let me just say, I, anytime you can monetize the family relationship on a podcast.

• 10:46Speaker 06

Well, yeah, we both all do, all family, yeah.

• 10:49Speaker 07

But it's good, I mean, how, I know my brother.

• 10:51Jessie Ware?

Uh, hang on a minute, Seth, this is my podcast, carry on.

• 10:54Speaker 07

I have a, I have a bad habit of doing this.

• 10:57Jessie Ware?

  Go on, go on.

• 10:57Speaker 07

But I just think that I talk to my brother so much more often now that we have a podcast together. But you guys maybe were talking all the time anyway.

• 11:06Jessie Ware?

I feel like I just grunt at my mom when we're, when the mics are not on. I'm like, I revert to being a teenager.

• 11:12Speaker 06

Can you imagine at my stage in life, I get involved in this and I've met the most amazing people. It's like, wow.

• 11:20Speaker 07

  It's wonderful.

• 11:21Speaker 06

  It's wonderful.

• 11:22Speaker 07

I mean, I'm so happy to be, I mean, I don't know how you and I were gonna meet otherwise.

• 11:25Speaker 06

I don't know, could I just ask one thing?

• 11:27Speaker 07

  Yes.

• 11:28Speaker 06

Are your eyes, or is George Clooney's eyes as blue as yours?

• 11:31Speaker 07

Oh, I did mention that I met George Clooney recently.

• 11:34Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 11:34Jessie Ware?

This is my mom just entering into the flirt.

• 11:36Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 11:37Speaker 06

  Okay. No, it's not flirting.

• 11:38Speaker 07

Yeah, she's flirting with someone else.

• 11:40Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 11:40Jessie Ware?

  It's good necking, isn't it?

• 11:42Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 11:43Jessie Ware?

  It's like a compliment.

• 11:44Speaker 07

She definitely was looking at me and I thought she was gonna ask about my eyes.

• 11:47Speaker 06

  But your eyes are astonishing.

• 11:49Speaker 07

Thank you, see, that, open with that, and then get to Clooney.

• 11:52Speaker 06

  Your eyes are astonishing.

• 11:53Speaker 07

And it's, you guys have given me a very nice light for my eyes.

• 11:56Speaker 06

Does George Clooney even tiny, tiny bit match up?

• 12:00Speaker 07

I mean, it's hard for me because, uh, I, I have a ego, a healthy ego about my eyes, only my eyes.

• 12:07Speaker 06

  Gorgeous eyes.

• 12:07Speaker 07

But look, George Clooney has really good eyes too.

• 12:09Speaker 06

He does, okay, I just need a reassurance on that one.

• 12:12Speaker 07

I don't want you to think any less of me.

• 12:14Speaker 06

  And how was his show?

• 12:15Speaker 07

  It was fantastic.

• 12:16Speaker 06

Was it? I wish we'd gone to see that as well.

• 12:18Jessie Ware?

Well, yeah, we went to see Jonathan Groff in, uh, Just in Time.

• 12:23Speaker 07

He's one of those people that if you have the opportunity to see him live, you have to see him live.

• 12:27Speaker 06

  He is amazing.

• 12:29Speaker 07

I would tell you guys, and I'll just be honest, I would have told you a year ago, I am not a fan of a Broadway musical. I like a Broadway play.

• 12:36Jessie Ware?

And that's why we haven't had you on yet.

• 12:38Speaker 07

I understand. But this is why you had me on now. I saw Merrily We Roll Along with Jonathan Groff.

• 12:46Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, amazing.

• 12:46Speaker 07

And I can't stop listening to the soundtrack, and I feel like. Keep that performance and that, uh, the three of them, opened my eyes to what musical theater can be.

• 12:54Jessie Ware?

So you're like a Sondheim fan now?

• 12:56Speaker 07

  I'm fully in on Sondheim.

• 12:57Jessie Ware?

  Wow, interesting.

• 12:59Speaker 07

That kinda like the interesting guy?

• 13:01Jessie Ware?

Yeah, I feel like Lonely Island could do something with like a Sondheim thing.

• 13:05Speaker 07

You know, we did a, I have a very small, a very niche show called Documentary Now. Where it's parodies of existing documentaries and, uh, John Mulaney and I wrote an episode that is a parody of, uh, Company.

• 13:19Jessie Ware?

  Oh, really?

• 13:20Speaker 07

Yeah, mostly John Mulaney mostly wrote it, actually.

• 13:22Jessie Ware?

So, so were you on the show, were you doing late night last night?

• 13:26Speaker 07

  No, I'm on hiatus.

• 13:28Jessie Ware?

So, okay, so when do you go back on?

• 13:30Speaker 07

  On Monday.

• 13:32Speaker 06

How long have you been off?

• 13:34Speaker 07

I've been off for two weeks and I don't care for it.

• 13:35Jessie Ware?

Oh, you made out like hiatus was like, I mean, like it was a long, yeah.

• 13:39Speaker 07

No, no, we just have like a week off here, a week off there, but it, I don't like having, I would just like to have a weekend.

• 13:44Speaker 06

I read that you prefer working to the beach.

• 13:47Speaker 07

Oh, yeah, the beach. You guys, where are you on the beach?

• 13:51Jessie Ware?

  I love the beach.

• 13:51Speaker 06

  We love the beach, yeah.

• 13:53Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 13:54Speaker 06

  Come to Greece.

• 13:55Speaker 07

Yeah, no, Greece is nice, but I just don't.

• 13:57Jessie Ware?

Yeah, I mean, you chose Amsterdam as somewhere to live, which is not beachy.

• 14:02Speaker 07

  Not a real beach town.

• 14:02Jessie Ware?

  No.

• 14:03Speaker 07

I would say Amsterdam chose me. I was a very, I was a young improviser living in Chicago and, uh, there was a American ran improv comedy theater in Amsterdam and so I moved over there when I was a young person and I loved it.

• 14:17Jessie Ware?

  You loved the rain?

• 14:18Speaker 07

I did, I, but I genuinely loved the rain.

• 14:20Jessie Ware?

  Really?

• 14:21Speaker 07

I love everything. I love, biking home in the rain is like my, I feel like the perfect version of me.

• 14:27Speaker 06

Was that when you were stoned or not when you were stoned?

• 14:29Speaker 07

I wasn't that stoned. You know what, when I went to Amsterdam, you know what I found? I prefer alcohol to marijuana.

• 14:35Jessie Ware?

  Well, cheers to that.

• 14:36Speaker 07

  Yeah, cheers to that.

• 14:37Jessie Ware?

I mean, look, it's kind of like, I mean, this is not gonna be like day drinking sadly.

• 14:41Speaker 06

Do you always drink during the day?

• 14:44Speaker 07

I don't always drink, but if there's cameras.

• 14:47Jessie Ware?

  That is a genius idea.

• 14:49Speaker 07

It's a genius idea, save for the fact you can really only do it twice a year. Like, a real genius idea is carpool karaoke, because you can do it anytime somebody wants to sing a song. You know what I mean? You can, you could jam them out.

• 15:01Jessie Ware?

Well, if you're a functioning alcoholic, you could do it every day. That's the thing.

• 15:03Speaker 07

  You could.

• 15:04Jessie Ware?

  Is the hangover bad?

• 15:05Speaker 07

The hangover is bad. I, but I can handle the hangover. I think we're ve- we're very aware of the fact that at some point, there's a tipping moment where the audience says, "How cool is this? That this 51-year-old man is stage-" We know he has a family.

• 15:21Jessie Ware?

  Getting lord drunk.

• 15:21Speaker 07

And he's just getting blasted. Sometimes with pop stars. It just might not be a good look.

• 15:27Jessie Ware?

  Who was the best drunk?

• 15:30Speaker 07

Um, I will say that Rihanna, who's the best in a lot of categories. But it just kept her composure. What did she drink? Everything. And we just give her stupid drinks.

• 15:40Jessie Ware?

What was the, um, "We found Verve" in a-

• 15:44Speaker 07

Oh, yeah, "We found Verve in a-" God, yeah, it was, it was-

• 15:48Jessie Ware?

  "Homeless"? Not "Homeless"?

• 15:50Speaker 07

No. You have a very good memory. There was like, "Bitch Better Have My Bunny", I feel like, which is we drank something out of a chocolate bunny.

• 15:56Jessie Ware?

I, yeah, I mean, they're all quite disgusting, though, but the Verve had a Twinkie in it.

• 16:01Speaker 07

Yeah. Oh, that's it, "A Hostess Place". We found Verve in a Hostess. Hostess is the brand that makes Twinkies.

• 16:08Jessie Ware?

  Okay, right.

• 16:09Speaker 06

That sounds like one of her songs. "We found Verve in a hopeless, in a hopeless place."

• 16:13Jessie Ware?

  It's her song, Mark.

• 16:14Speaker 06

  Oh, okay.

• 16:15Speaker 07

Do you think that's a coincidence?

• 16:16Speaker 06

  Okay, I've just-

• 16:17Speaker 07

Was the most- You must have been sitting here being like, "Guys",

• 16:20Speaker 06

  Yeah, that's quite clever.

• 16:22Speaker 07

I am about to blow your mind.

• 16:26Speaker 06

  My insight, yeah, thanks, okay.

• 16:28Jessie Ware?

  Oh, my god.

• 16:29Speaker 06

  Fine.

• 16:29Jessie Ware?

So, so, we are, I do feel bad now, Seth, because we actually haven't cooked today, but we have cooked all week, and that isn't to say that you're not special.

• 16:38Speaker 07

But I actually, if it opens the door for me to be a return guest.

• 16:42Jessie Ware?

  It really is, absolutely. Absolutely.

• 16:45Speaker 07

I think let's just look at this as a first date, and I think that it's going really, I think it's going swimmingly.

• 16:50Jessie Ware?

I think it's going right. But we have, like, pulled in some favors, because I, have you heard about Bubba Bureka?

• 16:58Speaker 07

  No.

• 16:58Jessie Ware?

Okay, so they've been, where are they, like, East Village?

• 17:02Speaker 07

  Okay, oh, they're brand new.

• 17:03Jessie Ware?

  Brand new.

• 17:04Speaker 07

Oh, that makes me feel, I had a real, like, I was upset that you guys knew more about.

• 17:08Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 17:09Speaker 07

A culinary place in my home.

• 17:10Jessie Ware?

It's really good. So we went on our first day in town. So Benny is a friend of mine. I used to make music with him. And now we just eat. Anyway, so Benny like organized, which is his favorite thing to do, organized a kind of team.

• 17:24Speaker 06

And it must have been thirty people.

• 17:26Speaker 07

  Okay.

• 17:26Jessie Ware?

And we walk to this place. It's a pastry shop. And he's like, they're ready for us. And like, and this lovely guy Ben Gingy, like queen, brings out all these Bureka and. We're gonna have them. They're gonna be a bit cold now, but they're still delicious because it's pastry. It's gonna be awkward. We're gonna have to talk about it. It on our faces and just look out for each other. But it was so delicious. So we thought that you should try the Bureka. Because are you like, do you go out for, do you have time to go out for dinners when you're.

• 17:54Speaker 07

We do okay. I would say.

• 17:57Jessie Ware?

  You have three kids.

• 17:58Speaker 07

  We have three kids and.

• 17:59Jessie Ware?

  And a dog.

• 17:59Speaker 07

Say, it was funny, this, where we're doing this podcast is a hotel that. I remember before we had kids, one time we did like a steak. We just came here for like a romantic night.

• 18:11Jessie Ware?

  Did you get any sleep?

• 18:12Speaker 06

Did you stay in one of the rooms?

• 18:14Speaker 07

One of the rooms. But this is before we had kids.

• 18:15Speaker 06

Did you have the curtains open or curtains open or closed?

• 18:19Speaker 07

You know what? New York, this is our gift to you. Uh, curtains open. But it is so funny to come back to the same hotel. And if I said to my wife, you know what? I think we should go back. Like she'd be like, wait, me alone? Because if it's me alone, that's a great gift. But if you want to come with me to a hotel. Get out of town.

• 18:35Jessie Ware?

  Oh my, yeah.

• 18:36Speaker 07

But so we try to go out, you know, we are trying to, you know, maintain um, uh, some of the romance of like going out to a nice dinner, but we do okay. I would say we do it a lot with friends, which is nice.

• 18:45Jessie Ware?

So where's the best meal that you've had recently out?

• 18:49Speaker 07

Four Charles. Have you heard about Four Charles? It's called Four Charles Prime Rib. It is, that is the address. And it's exceptionally good. Little restaurant, a tough rez. I feel like you guys might be able to land it.

• 19:02Jessie Ware?

I feel like you can get.

• 19:03Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 19:03Jessie Ware?

  Any rez.

• 19:04Speaker 07

With a little bit of warning, I can get. There's some places, even today, if it's, I mean, it's New York City, if it's day of.

• 19:11Jessie Ware?

I mean, I tried to get into Misey in Brooklyn.

• 19:14Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 19:14Jessie Ware?

  The um, they didn't bite.

• 19:16Speaker 07

  Nothing, huh?

• 19:16Jessie Ware?

  And that's okay.

• 19:17Speaker 07

  Yeah, that's fine.

• 19:17Jessie Ware?

  And it was humbling.

• 19:18Speaker 07

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 19:19Jessie Ware?

I've had a good week and it was good to get me back down to planet earth.

• 19:22Speaker 06

Queued and got into Bar Pity and got insulted by the waiter.

• 19:26Speaker 07

Bar Pity, I just uh, Bar Pity is my uh, my kids love Bar Pity. And my daughter, because I'm on hiatus, I picked up my daughter at school the other day and we went to Bar Pity for lunch.

• 19:35Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, that's so New Yorker.

• 19:37Speaker 07

  So.

• 19:39Jessie Ware?

  What's her order?

• 19:39Speaker 06

The only place in New York doesn't take cards. You have to go downstairs.

• 19:43Speaker 07

  Go downstairs to get cash.

• 19:44Speaker 06

  Out of the ATM.

• 19:46Speaker 07

  From a real janky ATM.

• 19:47Speaker 06

  I know.

• 19:48Speaker 07

Like an ATM that looks like it's there to steal your.

• 19:50Speaker 06

Yeah, absolutely. I was worried it wasn't going to eat my card and not.

• 19:54Jessie Ware?

So, so what did your daughter order?

• 19:56Speaker 07

She wanted a penne with a red sauce.

• 19:59Jessie Ware?

  Okay, classic.

• 20:00Speaker 07

Yeah, classic. I was a little disappointed that she wasn't, you know, I, I want her to have that sort of palate where she'll order off the menu, but I'm in the palm of her hand, so if she wants to be bossy with me. It's very good. It's very simple and very good.

• 20:12Jessie Ware?

I feel like New York kids know how to dine out better than any other, like, well, like, they're definitely better than my kids. Like, we were at this Bar Ecker's place and two kids that, uh, my friend's kids, they were just like not kicking up of us. Weren't trying to be the center of attention, weren't demanding.

• 20:32Speaker 06

  Jesse.

• 20:32Jessie Ware?

How kids should, like, you know.

• 20:34Speaker 06

Stop talking about my grandchildren like that. They're fabulous.

• 20:37Jessie Ware?

My kids do not wanna go to restaurants. Like, they don't care for it. They don't wanna.

• 20:42Speaker 06

  How old's your daughter, though?

• 20:43Speaker 07

  Three and a half.

• 20:44Speaker 06

And she wanted to go out for red sauce?

• 20:46Speaker 07

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 20:47Speaker 06

Did she say, Dad, take me out to Bar Pity?

• 20:49Speaker 07

I said, where do you wanna go to lunch? She said Bar Pity. Bar Pity, by the way, a really cute restaurant to hear from a three and a half year old girl. We also sat at Bar Pity. It was pretty empty because we went at noon when it opens. And someone who was sitting one table over, uh, works at, uh, Stephen Colbert Show and he's a friend, so he introduced himself. And my daughter very much was like, oh, she was very frustrated because it was our daddy-daughter date. She was like, only talk to me. She kept saying, only talk to me, Dada. And so I had, and then, uh, this lovely guy tried a few more times. I mean, we have friends in common and she just was very, and then he left and another woman sat next to us. And the minute she sat down, she's like, why is she not talking to us? And I was like, oh, so you did love it. So secretly, you did love it?

• 21:29Jessie Ware?

This is really interesting because do you get approached by people in the street quite a lot?

• 21:34Speaker 07

Yes, but in the most polite way. I think I have, I would say the great thing about the level of recognition I have is most people don't break stride. I get a lot of like, love the show. On the way by, yes, they don't feel the need. I think there's a certain level of fame where people really need to like, have a moment with you. Photo, or like, tell you how important.

• 21:56Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 21:57Speaker 07

Uh, I'm not, no one needs to tell me how important I am. I'm a real like, love your show, keep walking. And so with the kids, it's great.

• 22:03Jessie Ware?

Would you like something to eat?

• 22:04Speaker 07

  Yeah, let's do it.

• 22:05Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 22:06Speaker 07

I love, by the way, not only am I not getting a meal, but then you told me you have pastries, but they're not gonna be warm. I just feel like across the board, this is bad.

• 22:13Speaker 06

I think we've eaten them before.

• 22:14Speaker 07

Okay, I also have a real fear that I need to, uh.

• 22:17Speaker 06

  What? You dribble.

• 22:19Speaker 07

People hate, my mother and my wife have almost, the one thing they most agree on is I should never eat on camera.

• 22:27Speaker 06

  Okay, we won't.

• 22:28Speaker 07

  Okay.

• 22:29Speaker 06

  We won't show anything.

• 22:30Jessie Ware?

You know what, if it's that bad, we won't put the clip out, don't worry. And also like, um, Alice is very, very good, but we, um, uh, uh, taking out, what, is it the sound or the facial?

• 22:41Speaker 07

You guys, you know what, when it's over? I mean, I'm, I'm gonna be really in my head. I think they would say that it's when the cameras aren't rolling that it's a disaster.

• 22:48Jessie Ware?

Okay, so listen, we've got like, four different types of Bureka. And they're flaky and they're gonna get in our face.

• 22:55Speaker 06

  Those are on to you.

• 22:56Jessie Ware?

  Okay, so, yeah, there's like.

• 22:58Speaker 07

  Oh, this is so exciting.

• 22:59Jessie Ware?

So they've got, um, spinach and, are you allergic to anything?

• 23:02Speaker 07

  No.

• 23:02Jessie Ware?

  Spinach and artichoke.

• 23:03Speaker 06

You sound like you're in a restaurant.

• 23:05Jessie Ware?

I know, any dietary, that's what they say here. Um, there's a corn one, and look, if we have pastry, I've basically chosen the worst first aid foods, spinach and pastry.

• 23:15Speaker 07

  Great.

• 23:16Jessie Ware?

  Gorgeous, enjoy yourself.

• 23:17Speaker 07

And just the perfect table for it.

• 23:19Jessie Ware?

  I know, I know.

• 23:22Speaker 07

  Every, this is just.

• 23:23Jessie Ware?

I know, look, eat what you can, and then we've got babka from breads, do you know breads bakery?

• 23:27Speaker 07

What's over there, what's that one?

• 23:29Jessie Ware?

  This, I don't know.

• 23:30Speaker 06

I want the spinach, I like the spinach.

• 23:33Jessie Ware?

  What do you feel like?

• 23:34Speaker 07

I don't know, I feel like it's, it's gonna be a flaky disaster, but it's gonna be good.

• 23:38Jessie Ware?

I agree, hon, I'm gonna do a solid for you, and I think that's potato enchiladas.

• 23:42Speaker 07

  That's what I want.

• 23:42Jessie Ware?

And you've gotta have the zoug and the tahini and the tomato, and do you want a little half boiled egg?

• 23:48Speaker 07

Oh, by the way, my, uh, my daughter, thanks to Peppa Pig, is now saying tomato.

• 23:53Jessie Ware?

  Oh.

• 23:53Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 23:54Jessie Ware?

God, that is a mad addition.

• 23:56Speaker 07

Immediately, by the way, also at her little, her little store.

• 23:59Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 23:59Speaker 07

  In her bedroom.

• 24:00Jessie Ware?

  Alright.

• 24:01Speaker 07

Like wouldn't, like, uh, now we have to pay in pounds.

• 24:04Jessie Ware?

Oh my God, I love that.

• 24:05Speaker 07

By the way, if she says, if she ever says shallots, I'm kicking her out of the house. That's the one.

• 24:10Jessie Ware?

Shallots. Shallots. What about, or I recognize.

• 24:12Speaker 07

  Shallots.

• 24:13Speaker 06

Can you find a spinach over there?

• 24:15Speaker 07

  Sure.

• 24:16Speaker 06

  Does it say it?

• 24:17Speaker 07

Well, I mean, it says it on the part of the box that you can't see if you open it.

• 24:21Jessie Ware?

  That's the cheese.

• 24:22Speaker 06

  Corn. I don't.

• 24:23Speaker 07

  Spin, oh, corn.

• 24:24Jessie Ware?

  Corn is great.

• 24:25Speaker 07

Sorry, spin is, uh, in America is short for spinach.

• 24:28Jessie Ware?

Can we talk about your mom's sandwich fillings?

• 24:30Speaker 07

  Yeah, sure.

• 24:31Jessie Ware?

Cause I was listening to your podcast with your brother.

• 24:33Speaker 07

  Mm-hmm.

• 24:34Jessie Ware?

And you were talking and celebrating how your mom was pretty ahead of the game with her sandwich fillings.

• 24:38Speaker 07

She would, yeah, she would, uh, I, the best sandwich was a, she made a great chicken Kiev and then.

• 24:46Jessie Ware?

That's very ahead of the game, by the way.

• 24:49Speaker 07

Very ahead of the game, yeah. I think when.

• 24:50Jessie Ware?

She was doing like Sandoz before Sandoz were a thing.

• 24:53Speaker 06

  What's a Sandoz?

• 24:54Speaker 07

  Very much so.

• 24:54Jessie Ware?

  Like fried chicken, like.

• 24:55Speaker 07

Yes, like a proper, like, not just like thin, you know, store bought ham, but like she would then like sort of chop up the, uh, chicken Kiev and, and, uh, yeah, it was a big thick.

• 25:06Jessie Ware?

So you were like, having like a garlicy, oozy.

• 25:09Speaker 07

Yeah. On marble rye, pre toast, she would toast the marble rye.

• 25:14Jessie Ware?

  That's amazing.

• 25:14Speaker 07

She took very good care of us.

• 25:15Speaker 06

  Why did she do that?

• 25:17Speaker 07

  Um, a mother's love.

• 25:19Speaker 06

  Okay.

• 25:20Speaker 07

  I think she just, yeah.

• 25:21Speaker 06

And was this for school packed lunch?

• 25:23Speaker 07

That was school packed lunch for school, yeah.

• 25:25Speaker 06

And did all the other children want to eat your packed lunch?

• 25:28Speaker 07

I, you know what? I actually think the other kids maybe thought it was a little weird and didn't quite know what they were missing out.

• 25:33Jessie Ware?

But at least it wasn't like smelly.

• 25:35Speaker 07

  No, exactly.

• 25:36Jessie Ware?

  You know what I mean?

• 25:37Speaker 06

  Garlic from the Kiev.

• 25:38Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, but.

• 25:39Speaker 07

  It wasn't that bad.

• 25:39Jessie Ware?

It's not like having an egg sandwich.

• 25:41Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 25:41Jessie Ware?

  Or a tuna sandwich.

• 25:42Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 25:42Speaker 06

  Oh, I love.

• 25:42Speaker 07

As long as you don't have either of those, you're fine in a lunch cup here.

• 25:45Speaker 06

So where, where did you go to school?

• 25:47Speaker 07

I went to a public high school in New Hampshire.

• 25:50Jessie Ware?

  So this side.

• 25:51Speaker 07

Yeah, northeast, hour north of Boston. And, um, it was lovely. I went to a great school, got a great education. My mom was a school teacher at the middle school. She was my teacher. Bad news, she was my French teacher, my French is terrible, so I do reflect poorly on her as an educator.

• 26:07Jessie Ware?

She was your teacher? I've never heard about like, someone getting their mom as their teacher.

• 26:11Speaker 07

We, the thing, she was the first French teacher. And so I had her in sixth grade, and then they added a French teacher, and once there was another option, I didn't, I would, they wouldn't let me have her. But if it's the only option and you want to take the class.

• 26:24Jessie Ware?

Did you want to take the class?

• 26:26Speaker 07

I did, I think. I mean, I was pretty, it went pretty well.

• 26:30Jessie Ware?

I'm on my second, I'm doing really well.

• 26:32Speaker 06

I want to have another one.

• 26:33Jessie Ware?

This one is the safe, safest for.

• 26:36Speaker 07

I'm gonna do, I'm gonna do the corn.

• 26:39Jessie Ware?

  The corn is delicious.

• 26:40Speaker 07

Just because I've never, once at breakfast, thought, I hope they have the corn. And so this is, for me, it's a real breaker.

• 26:48Speaker 06

  Can you pass the spinach?

• 26:49Speaker 07

  Yeah, of course I can.

• 26:51Speaker 06

Who does the cooking in your house?

• 26:53Speaker 07

My wife, yeah, yeah. And my brother-in-law, who lives with us, he has done some private chefing, and so he.

• 27:00Jessie Ware?

Oh, great. Yeah, he's. Is that why he got invited to stay with you then?

• 27:04Speaker 07

Yeah, he's, an extra set of hands too, is a very helpful thing to have, yeah.

• 27:09Jessie Ware?

So if we were coming around to yours.

• 27:11Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 27:11Jessie Ware?

  And your wife was cooking.

• 27:12Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 27:13Jessie Ware?

What would you be giving us for our dinner?

• 27:16Speaker 07

  Okay, that's a good question.

• 27:18Jessie Ware?

What's your favorite thing that your wife does?

• 27:20Speaker 07

Um, I mean, my wife makes an exceptional brisket, if we were doing, I mean, if we were doing sort of a special occasion.

• 27:27Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 27:28Speaker 07

Uh, if you guys are coming over for passovers.

• 27:30Speaker 06

  How much it costs?

• 27:31Speaker 07

I would say, uh, I would say, I don't know, I'm gonna say eight, and she pretends like it's a hundred and fifty.

• 27:37Jessie Ware?

  Okay, got it.

• 27:38Speaker 07

You know what I mean? Like, it's hard to know the exact number, because, you know, she presents as someone who's been doing a lot of cooking. When she's doing her cooking.

• 27:45Speaker 06

I understand that one, yeah. And what do you serve with your brisket?

• 27:50Speaker 07

I will say, my father-in-law makes really good potato pancakes, lacas.

• 27:55Speaker 06

  Lacas, oh.

• 27:56Speaker 07

And with green chili, so they're from New Mexico, and I don't know if you've ever had any green chilies, which is a very unique to New Mexican cuisine. But it's fantastic in everything, and so I would say green chili lacas would be, that's a big deal.

• 28:10Speaker 06

So he puts the green. Chops them up and puts them in the

• 28:13Speaker 07

  Yes.

• 28:14Speaker 06

  Are they hot?

• 28:15Speaker 07

They're, I would say they're more like bold and flavorful. You can get a hot one, but they're like, uh, they're really smoky.

• 28:23Speaker 06

  Are they fresh green chilies?

• 28:25Speaker 07

No, yeah, so they're fresh and you get them when they are harvested and then you have, if you have a connection in New Mexico, they'll like send you a bunch and then you freeze them.

• 28:34Speaker 06

And what's, what are they big, are they?

• 28:36Speaker 07

They're like long green chilies. And so if you, you could like slice them, if you like wanted to like fry them, they'd be like sort of long thin strips, but you sort of chop them up for.

• 28:45Speaker 06

  Do your kids eat them?

• 28:46Speaker 07

  They love them.

• 28:47Speaker 06

  Ah.

• 28:47Speaker 07

New Mexican cuisine, I was not a fan of spicy food before I met my wife and now I love it a great deal and I, I'm a huge, I mean, I will say like after like four days of visiting New Mexico, you'd like to move on to something else, but.

• 29:00Jessie Ware?

That's so interesting. I don't really think of Jews having any spice as well. Like, so that's.

• 29:04Speaker 06

I don't think of Jews in New Mexico. To be perfectly.

• 29:08Speaker 07

  There's very few.

• 29:09Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 29:09Speaker 07

Yeah. My, my wife's family is real vanguard of it.

• 29:13Jessie Ware?

How, how was, um, your sleep last night? Did your?

• 29:16Speaker 07

  It was bad.

• 29:17Jessie Ware?

  Child knock on the door?

• 29:19Speaker 07

Problem. No, it was worse than that. This awful, we've started this awful new routine. So my wife and I went out to an event and uh, we told the babysitter she could let Axel sleep in our bed until we got home. And then I, and then on the transfer, Axel just begged to stay. So Alexi was like, just let him stay. So I made it till about 12:30 and then he was kicking me so much that I went and I slept in the lower bunk of my boy's bunk beds.

• 29:44Speaker 06

  Awful.

• 29:45Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 29:45Jessie Ware?

Yeah. You had dad man walk.

• 29:48Speaker 07

  Dad man walk.

• 29:49Jessie Ware?

Yeah, dad man walk is your HBO special. And it's all about being a parent and there was this amazing, um, clip that's about, um, Seth having his children wake him up in the night and the, and him wishing it would be an intruder instead of his child.

• 30:05Speaker 06

Isn't it always musical beds with young kids?

• 30:08Speaker 07

It is, but we were kind of in a good place and Axel's so charming. That Alexi said, oh, it's so, it's nice when he's, he's so cuddly. And then I think he like cuddles with her and then.

• 30:18Speaker 06

  And he kicks you.

• 30:19Speaker 07

Yeah. And then he kind of like moves perpendicular over the course of.

• 30:23Speaker 06

He's trying to oust you in some way.

• 30:25Speaker 07

  I think it's a, I think it's a group effort. I think they're working in tandem. I don't, I don't think he's working alone. I think it's a two man job.

• 32:58Jessie Ware?

As well as the sandwiches, can you paint a picture of your family dinner table? Who was around it? What were you eating? When your mum wasn't doing great Kiev sandwiches?

• 33:08Speaker 07

All right, so we were a core four family. We have the tiniest kitchen table that we ate at the entirety of growing up. And in fact, when my wife first saw how we ate dinner, like she's all, a lot of people pointed out, it's very hard to break into our inner sanctum of four people. And she said, the time I knew it was gonna be tough was when I realized you literally couldn't even fit a fifth chair at the table. It was like somebody had to sit at the kitchen counter. But we sat around that table. We had the same four seats every single night, like even today, like when I go back, I know exactly where to sit. And we, my dad commuted about an hour away from home, but we would usually wait to eat until he got home.

• 33:49Speaker 07

And in fact, my mom's least favorite thing, which he did every single day, is he would call her before he left the office to ask what was for dinner. And she would tell him and then she would hang up the phone and just basically bitch to us about like, what difference does it make? Like, what, does he have to prepare on the drive home to know what?

• 34:06Jessie Ware?

He wanted to look forward to it.

• 34:07Speaker 07

He did, I think that, it was anticipation. You have a much warmer outlook on my father than my mother does.

• 34:13Jessie Ware?

What did he do, your dad?

• 34:14Speaker 07

He was in finance, he was a banker. It's a funny thing that he ended up with two people in show business, but he was incredibly supportive of that choice as well. But we, you know, I will say, like, there was a lot, my mom was a school teacher, so she worked every day as well. I feel like one of my favorite things is she would just, it was a lot of like frozen chicken wings. She would like, there was a tray of frozen chicken wings and then a tray of frozen french fries and that would, it was a lot of that. A lot of burgers, but then, you know, macaroni and cheeses, you know, chickens. We didn't have a lot, growing up, by looking back, not a ton of red meat, certainly for dinners or anything. Lots of pastas and stuff.

• 34:56Speaker 07

I feel like we didn't, looking back, it was less healthy than certainly my mom eats now. Typically, we were just less aware of that.

• 35:05Jessie Ware?

But ethnically, where were they from, their heritage?

• 35:09Speaker 07

I mean, no, it's so I you know, my mom is like British and Swedish, but didn't really bring anything from that.

• 35:14Jessie Ware?

  No smorgasbord.

• 35:15Speaker 07

No smorgasbord, no. And uh, yeah, I mean, they didn't, that was not, we didn't really have that as a.

• 35:21Jessie Ware?

I just think in in the States, everyone's bringing their own heritage into their.

• 35:26Speaker 07

Yeah, we just felt like a suburban family. I feel like we ate like people in the suburbs.

• 35:30Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 35:31Speaker 07

Yeah, the most, I mean, given like my favorite thing my mom made was this Czech's party mix. Do you know Czech's?

• 35:36Jessie Ware?

  Uh. Yes.

• 35:38Speaker 07

The cereal. And so my mom, and to this day, it's still my favorite thing, but it's basically just like three kinds of Czechs, pretzel rods, peanuts, a ton of Worcestershire sauce, like sticks and sticks of butter. And we would just have this giant tub of that all the time.

• 35:53Jessie Ware?

Do you melt butter or do you put it in the oven?

• 35:55Speaker 07

You put it in the oven.

• 35:55Jessie Ware?

And then it kind of just.

• 35:56Speaker 07

  Just melts itself, yeah.

• 35:58Jessie Ware?

I don't understand what. It's like a trail mix, but like, you know, like a mix, like.

• 36:02Speaker 07

Now you can get in a bag, like Czechs actually makes it. It's cereal. Just think of this. It's three different kinds of cereal. Pretzels, peanuts.

• 36:09Jessie Ware?

  Cereal.

• 36:10Speaker 07

Yes, breakfast cereal, but it's like wheat. It's not, there's nothing sweet about it. It's like wheat checks or like, I can't remember the other kinds, but um.

• 36:18Jessie Ware?

Would there almost be like a version of like a Ritz's cracker?

• 36:20Speaker 07

  Yeah, it's very, it's a crunchy, delicious.

• 36:23Jessie Ware?

  It's yummy, carby delicious yum.

• 36:25Speaker 07

And uh, and again, it's another thing where if I go home and I eat it for a week, my wife says I smell like it.

• 36:32Jessie Ware?

  Oh, really?

• 36:32Speaker 07

That like, just like it oozes.

• 36:33Jessie Ware?

  Comes through your body.

• 36:34Speaker 07

Yeah, just, yeah, I don't, I think it might be the Worcestershire sauce.

• 36:37Jessie Ware?

That's interesting. I've never really thought about that.

• 36:39Speaker 07

Oh, I would say chicken, um, uh, curry chicken salad. That was a big thing. My mom made a homemade curry chicken salad. Yeah.

• 36:44Jessie Ware?

Coronation chicken? We call it coronation chicken.

• 36:47Speaker 07

Yeah, I mean, you know, uh, bits of celery, um, uh, you know, bits of, uh, um, I feel like cashew, maybe. My mom was the kind of person who would read a recipe in the New York Times and sort of that that would like enter the rotation for a year or so.

• 37:04Jessie Ware?

Yeah. Can you, can you cook?

• 37:06Speaker 07

No, I would say the worst thing that happened was during the pandemic. There, we had had these chefs from a place, hopefully I'm getting this right, I think called the Meatball Shop here in New York. And they had gave, you know, gifted me this, you know. Meatball cookbook. And I thought, well, this is, you know, for pandemic cooking, we had a lot of family with us and one roof. And and I just felt like such a king because I was making like once a week, I was making these really good meatballs. And then there was a point where the entire family was like, I think we're good. I think I think we've had our fill on the meatballs.

• 37:38Jessie Ware?

  Thanks.

• 37:39Speaker 07

  Please step aside.

• 37:41Jessie Ware?

So we ask everyone what their last supper would be.

• 37:43Speaker 07

Okay, I put some thought into this because I knew it was coming, but I feel I don't I don't know if I I really stress the last part of this.

• 37:51Jessie Ware?

  Did that stress you?

• 37:53Speaker 07

No, because I I don't know if this is the best supper, but I feel like if it's your last supper.

• 37:58Jessie Ware?

  Yes.

• 37:58Speaker 07

I think you want to eat all the things that you regret, like you know, a day later, you're like, oh, I wish I hadn't had that.

• 38:04Jessie Ware?

  Yes.

• 38:04Speaker 07

But if this is your last supper.

• 38:06Jessie Ware?

  Yes.

• 38:06Speaker 07

  Go for it.

• 38:07Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 38:08Speaker 07

So and this is this is all bad food.

• 38:10Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 38:11Speaker 07

But I think that's how I'd want to go out.

• 38:12Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 38:13Speaker 06

This says a lot about you.

• 38:14Speaker 07

  Which part that I?

• 38:15Speaker 06

  That it's bad food.

• 38:16Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 38:17Speaker 06

Yeah, that's in your heart where you want to be.

• 38:20Speaker 07

  It is.

• 38:20Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 38:20Speaker 07

  I.

• 38:21Jessie Ware?

Yeah. The nice guy wants to be bad.

• 38:23Speaker 07

I so I one of my favorite things about living in New York City and and cities in general, like just delivery food, ethnic delivered.

• 38:30Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 38:31Speaker 07

Chinese food especially. And I remember once, you know, after SNL, because we'd be up so late on Saturdays and then it would be Sunday and you'd sleep in. And then I would just, you know, love ordering Chinese food and not I would also, it was the first time I even had a little bit of money when I started at SNL. And I'm like, you know what? I'm gonna over order Chinese food. And I remember once I'd ordered a bunch of Chinese food. I lived alone and I was on the phone with one of my closest college friends and, you know, this is before food apps. So you actually had to like interact with the delivery person when they showed up. And I remember he showed up and he was some, I forget, he was like, that'll be like seventy two dollars or something. And I was like, okay. And my friend heard it on the phone and he said. Did you just order seventy two dollars of Chinese food for yourself?

• 39:15Speaker 07

And I was like, oh, yeah, is that bad? He goes, yeah, it's really, that's too much food.

• 39:18Jessie Ware?

You you know Jade Thurlow does this thing from Little Mix, Jade Thurlow. She she does the thing when she's ordering, she goes, is that is that for everybody? Yeah, yeah, we all good, when it's an order for herself.

• 39:31Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 39:31Jessie Ware?

  So to like.

• 39:32Speaker 07

  Oh, that's really good.

• 39:35Jessie Ware?

She'll be like, anybody want anything else?

• 39:38Speaker 06

  She just do that.

• 39:41Jessie Ware?

So what's your best thing of chi- not sweet and sour chicken?

• 39:44Speaker 07

It would be something, it would be like general sauce chicken or something like that, like the one of the kind that like is not, you know, it's it's mostly batter, it's barely chicken.

• 39:52Jessie Ware?

  Flourish, yeah.

• 39:53Speaker 07

And I will say, I, my heart races with excitement when there's a ton of white rice. Like, I know that, I mean, white rice would also be, I mean, like fluffy, well-prepared white rice. I get a lot of heat in my family for how much, like, when there's rice somewhere, they're all like, ugh.

• 40:12Jessie Ware?

  So that's your carb?

• 40:13Speaker 07

That's my carb, yeah, just the emptiest of carbs.

• 40:17Jessie Ware?

  I I I I love it.

• 40:19Speaker 07

  I love it.

• 40:19Jessie Ware?

Bouncy, fluffy, versatile, I'm into it.

• 40:22Speaker 07

It's like, what flavor do you want me to catch for you? That's what I feel like white rice is saying.

• 40:26Speaker 06

  No, I want noodles.

• 40:28Speaker 07

  Nah.

• 40:28Jessie Ware?

  Uh, but do you?

• 40:29Speaker 06

  Why?

• 40:29Speaker 07

I, well, one, I think I'm a little bit of a disaster when I eat a noodle, but I, yeah. I I like I like strength in numbers. I like when you have white rice, you're like, I'm feeling I'm gonna eat like three hundred, you dudes.

• 40:41Jessie Ware?

Yeah, but I, it doesn't go as far for me to order risotto. I order pasta.

• 40:48Speaker 07

Yeah, I I think that's too heavy. I think I like the lightness of white rice as opposed to, yeah, I agree, risotto, uh, yeah, too thick, too heavy.

• 40:56Jessie Ware?

  Like, give or take it.

• 40:57Speaker 06

So is, what's the starter in this Chinese meal?

• 41:00Speaker 07

I, well, so I went outside of Chinese for my starter, so that's my main is Chinese. I I remember once there was, um, uh, I, we went to a place in Nashville, like a barbecue place, that had fried pickles as the starter. Like, deep fried, like sliced pickles, a little pickle disc, deep fried.

• 41:18Jessie Ware?

Oh, that's making me, God, we had Jonathan on and he's, he, we acknowledged that he was a wet performer.

• 41:23Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 41:23Jessie Ware?

  Cause he's.

• 41:23Speaker 07

  The the wettest.

• 41:24Jessie Ware?

All he talked about was salivating the whole time. I just thought, oh, my God, here it comes, here it comes. But that just made me salivate.

• 41:31Speaker 07

Giant, like, the the screen guard on his microphone was, he told me it was insulting.

• 41:38Speaker 07

  The splash guard.

• 41:39Jessie Ware?

So, so it, it, where's the place that you got the fried pickles?

• 41:42Speaker 07

This is, again, I feel like I did a good job of planning ahead and a bad job of not looking it up. But maybe I'll try to get it for your show notes. But I will say, I said on the day we ate them, I said to my wife, these, I'm, they should call these deathbed pickles. Because I'm gonna, I think I'm gonna think about them on my deathbed.

• 41:57Jessie Ware?

Did you have a dip with it?

• 41:59Speaker 07

Yeah, it was like a white creamy, not quite aioli, but in that.

• 42:04Jessie Ware?

  Ranchy?

• 42:05Speaker 07

Yeah, but a little bit more interesting than ranch.

• 42:07Jessie Ware?

So you've got that as a starter?

• 42:08Speaker 07

  Yep.

• 42:09Jessie Ware?

  We've got the Chinese.

• 42:10Speaker 07

  Yep.

• 42:11Jessie Ware?

Is that your go-to place in New York? Are you allowed to share it?

• 42:15Speaker 07

I have a lot of places I like in New York, but I would say I'm, I would not be picky about it. I like, I kinda don't wanna get too fancy with it.

• 42:22Jessie Ware?

Where do you stand on duck with pancakes and plum sauce?

• 42:25Speaker 07

  I like it.

• 42:26Jessie Ware?

  Me too.

• 42:26Speaker 07

Yeah, I like it. I would say that's, in fact, that's my favorite delivery system of duck in the world would be pancakes, hoisin sauce.

• 42:34Jessie Ware?

  Do your kids like it?

• 42:36Speaker 07

I don't know if I've had a lot of duck, my kids. I feel like my kids are the age where they still don't wanna eat anything that looks cute in a book.

• 42:44Jessie Ware?

  Right.

• 42:44Speaker 07

Yeah, although we had a pet goat, or we didn't have a pet goat, my wife had a pet goat.

• 42:48Jessie Ware?

  Oh.

• 42:49Speaker 07

And, uh, I remember we went to a restaurant once and they were like, is there anything you won't eat? Cause it was like one of those fancy restaurants. And we were like, no. And then they brought out a course that was goat. And, uh, we were laughing because my wife's like, I don't think I can eat goat.

• 43:05Jessie Ware?

  Really?

• 43:05Speaker 07

And I was also, we also agreed that it would have been fucking crazy if a waiter was like, is there anything, is there any allergies? If you were like, we don't eat goat. Like you would be like, they're like, yeah, we know, don't worry.

• 43:15Jessie Ware?

What, what, what was the name? What's the name?

• 43:17Speaker 07

Uh, raisin, uh, rest in peace, yeah.

• 43:19Jessie Ware?

  Oh.

• 43:19Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 43:20Jessie Ware?

  Did you meet raisin?

• 43:20Speaker 07

I did. I didn't care for raisin. I think goats are bad pets, but they were my, they, my father-in-law was very

• 43:26Jessie Ware?

  They can be vicious.

• 43:27Speaker 07

Awful. They're awful animals. There's a reason people don't have them as pets.

• 43:29Jessie Ware?

Why did they have it as a pet?

• 43:32Speaker 07

Great story. My brother-in-law, uh, was gonna cook it. Uh, like bought it to, was gonna do like a goat, whatever roast.

• 43:40Jessie Ware?

  And slaughter it?

• 43:41Speaker 07

Yeah, slaughter it. And it was gonna be for a big dinner party he was doing.

• 43:45Jessie Ware?

Cause he's a private chef? Okay.

• 43:48Speaker 07

And then my, uh, my father-in-law laid, like they, like laid eyes. By the way, when you make eye contact with a goat, like they're the just devilish sideways eyes and he was just like

• 44:03Speaker 07

yeah, Raisin lived with, yeah, lived with him for years.

• 44:06Jessie Ware?

Did they get milk out of Raisin?

• 44:07Speaker 07

No, Raisin was a, was a was a boy and a pain and like head butted.

• 44:12Speaker 06

How long did he live for?

• 44:13Speaker 07

He did all right. I want to say, I don't know what is good for a goat, but he was around for like eight, eight or nine years.

• 44:20Speaker 06

So after you've eaten all this fried stuff, which definitely is going to be your last supper.

• 44:28Speaker 07

It's both a last meal and the cause of death.

• 44:31Speaker 06

And what is your, do you gonna have dessert?

• 44:33Speaker 07

Alright guys, I don't have a sweet tooth, so

• 44:35Jessie Ware?

  At all.

• 44:36Speaker 07

Not really. I mean, if there's a dessert at the table, I'm gonna try it all, but I have no, like I never, my, I, I am, I'm the reverse grove. When I think about dessert, just my mouth dries out.

• 44:46Jessie Ware?

Okay, so, so if we were to offer you a slice of babka now.

• 44:50Speaker 07

I would have babka. Babka's great, but I went for my last meal, though. I do have an answer. But it's not because I like it, but I, you know, like baked Alaska? I just feel like the, I just that excitement, I feel like if I'm going out, there's something like a Viking funeral about somebody lighting my dessert on fire.

• 45:06Speaker 06

  That's Alice's favorite.

• 45:08Speaker 07

But like genuinely? Fun, right. That's what I wanted for fun. Yeah.

• 45:13Jessie Ware?

Yeah, we, we had a good baked Alaska Sunday the other day. I mean, it was a deconstructed Alaska, but like, so it just had basically torched meringue on the top.

• 45:24Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 45:24Jessie Ware?

But it was a pistachio baked Alaska, and I don't know why I'm telling you this because you don't have a sweet tooth. So you're like literally drying up, you're drying up.

• 45:31Speaker 07

No, it's fine. I mean, it's I, I kind of think it's a gift not, oh, not a gift, but a blessing not to have a, uh, sweet tooth.

• 45:38Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 45:38Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 45:39Jessie Ware?

So would you like, do you like cheese?

• 45:41Speaker 07

  I love, I will say.

• 45:44Speaker 07

I love cheese so much that it's a problem and I it's when I go to a like dinner party where there's a cheese course first, it's a disaster for me because I can't stop eating the cheese and it ruins.

• 45:55Speaker 06

I can't even buy cheese because I would eat it.

• 45:58Speaker 07

  I love it so much.

• 45:59Speaker 06

I love it so much. What's your best one?

• 46:01Speaker 07

  I love um Gouda.

• 46:03Speaker 06

  Gouda.

• 46:04Speaker 07

Yeah, I do. That was true. Do you know how they say it in Amsterdam?

• 46:07Speaker 06

  No.

• 46:09Speaker 07

This would be if I was one of those awful people who went abroad and then used the word for um you know my favorite uh Haude.

• 46:14Speaker 06

  Haude.

• 46:15Speaker 07

  I love a good Haude.

• 46:17Speaker 06

  Haude.

• 46:18Jessie Ware?

Is your daughter gonna start saying Haude?

• 46:20Speaker 07

  I hope, I hope not.

• 46:23Speaker 06

I've got to ask a serious question. Well, not very serious. Um do all the chat show hosts feel they have a responsibility in this political climate to challenge what's going on?

• 46:36Speaker 07

I'll speak for myself. I know a lot of us here certainly. I I don't know if it's a responsibility as much as it is very clear to me it's how I want to use my time.

• 46:46Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 46:47Speaker 07

So it's you know, I don't I don't feel like uh and I almost feel like it's a better show because it's what I deeply want to be talking about. As opposed to something where I feel like uh I and no one is asking it of me. I'm choosing to do it.

• 47:00Jessie Ware?

Do you have any regret for basically encouraging uh Donald Trump to go for president?

• 47:06Speaker 07

I have my my answer was always like, no, nobody. I mean, I would have regret. Here's how I have a regret.

• 47:11Jessie Ware?

Explain to mum what what happened.

• 47:12Speaker 07

So in two thousand and eleven, I hosted this dinner where you make fun uh

• 47:15Jessie Ware?

  At the White House.

• 47:16Speaker 07

It's it's in DC. It's not at the proper White House, but uh I was on a dais with with President Obama and Michelle Obama. A night, by the way, that both my wife and mom said, don't because you have dinner on a dais. And they were so worried that I was gonna have to eat food next to Michelle Obama. They just said, just don't eat. So then you make fun of the president, you make fun of both parties, but Donald Trump in two thousand and eleven was just this blowhard businessman and at the time, he was really sort of ringing the bell for the fact that Barack Obama was not a real American, was not born in the country. And so we both myself and President Obama made a great deal of fun of him um that night, deservedly so, and he

• 47:58Speaker 07

a lot of people say that's the night he decided to run for president. Now, I would regret it if. I would regret it if even one person in the run up to it when I was rehearsing said, "I think these are great jokes. Just FYI, he might run for win president." You know what I mean? Like, it was so far afield of what anybody could have.

• 48:18Jessie Ware?

  Have you met him?

• 48:19Speaker 07

  I have.

• 48:20Jessie Ware?

  Have you interviewed him?

• 48:21Speaker 07

Lovely. You know what? My god, lovely. He makes a great baked Alaska. No, um, I met him a couple of days ago. He hosted Saturday Night Live, uh, back in like, I think 2004 when he was, uh, hosted that show, The Apprentice.

• 48:33Jessie Ware?

How was that? Were you on the show at that point?

• 48:35Speaker 07

  I was on the show.

• 48:36Jessie Ware?

And, and what was the feeling then? Was it like?

• 48:39Speaker 07

  It was just sort of-

• 48:40Jessie Ware?

It was a bit of a joke?

• 48:41Speaker 07

Yeah, just sort of a buffoon. And weirdly, because I-

• 48:46Jessie Ware?

We're never getting back in the country, by the way.

• 48:47Speaker 07

Yeah, well, I mean, I probably won't after my trip to Amsterdam.

• 48:52Speaker 07

But, uh, you know, he, he didn't have a sense of humor, save for the fact that when people, I remember when he was in front of the audience, when the audience started laughing, he liked that it was working. So he's just sort of drawn to the light of what people like, as opposed to, I think, having any internal compass for what is good, so.

• 49:13Jessie Ware?

Who, you've interviewed everybody, basically everybody.

• 49:18Speaker 07

  Fair amount of people, yeah.

• 49:19Jessie Ware?

And have you ever really regretted how an interview's gone? Not necessarily in the sense that, like, you were fed, uh, just that you wished you, you kind of stayed up being like, "Damn, I wished I'd done it differently."

• 49:33Speaker 07

Yeah, there's a couple. I mean, for certainly, and, and in a way, it has, uh, taught me a valuable lesson, which is there's probably more strength in the show when you just have guests on that you think will be a good in conversation,

• 49:48Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 49:48Speaker 07

as opposed to having guests on that you think will be an important conversation. Like, I like kind of, it's a very nice structure of the show, which is we use the first chunk of it to talk about what's going on in the news. And then I think transitioning to having, uh, guests who are good talkers and making work that you respect and love. Like, that's more fun than trying to be contentious.

• 50:08Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 50:08Speaker 07

You know, uh, this is a bipartisan criticism. Every politician is a pretty bad talk show guest. They just want to say, you know, the stuff they have tested and, and they'll come with three canned jokes that they're gonna tell no matter what. There's no way they'd get them away from it. And so, it's also funny, I think it was, it must have been- I guess 2020, there was a really big Democratic primary field before it sort of solidified around Joe Biden. We had almost all of them on. And it was so funny because you'd say, our next guest is running to be the Democratic candidate for the President of the United States. And the audience was so excited because you could feel they were like, oh, my God, we might be seeing the next president. And then a minute or two into the interview, you just felt them sit back being like, they're not going to be the next. This isn't going to be the next president.

• 50:53Speaker 07

And so, uh, so we just are like, let's talk about the news, but then like, well, we actually have conversations. Let's, because again, I, I have no regrets when I'm talking to a person that I want to be talking to because I know how to have those conversations. It's when you're trying to, I don't know, in the body of an interview, when you're trying to prove a point. Um, those are the ones where I think you regret afterwards because you sometimes come a little bit out of yourself.

• 51:16Jessie Ware?

  Can I help you?

• 51:17Speaker 07

  What is the?

• 51:18Jessie Ware?

  Okay, so one's a date.

• 51:20Speaker 07

  Okay.

• 51:21Jessie Ware?

And it looks like it's got like some. It's date and chocolate. Date and chocolate and one's just chocolate.

• 51:25Speaker 06

  Yeah, I would try that.

• 51:26Jessie Ware?

But I don't know which one's which. And do you want some more coffee?

• 51:29Speaker 06

  That's date and chocolate.

• 51:30Jessie Ware?

That one. How many coffees are you on a day?

• 51:33Speaker 07

  Oh, it's bad.

• 51:34Jessie Ware?

Is it? But I feel like you've been quite, like.

• 51:37Speaker 07

Well, I'm on, that's, I guess you guys gave me my second.

• 51:40Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 51:40Speaker 07

But I will say that when I'm at work on a show day, I, I just sort of, and, and not even because I'm falling asleep, but just the anxiety, it's like a, a tick to just keep getting more coffee.

• 51:52Jessie Ware?

Before we let you go, can you give us a nostalgic taste or scent that can transport you back somewhere?

• 52:00Speaker 07

Well, I mean, I sort of, I, I guess I sort of blew this one, but I will only say that I went and visited my brother who lives in LA. And I was, I went to his house in LA and we were talking and I was, there was something. I, this familiarity was like tickling, like sort of the back of whatever cortex it is that holds the memories. And I was like, what's going on? Like, I couldn't place it. And then it turned out, because it was, uh, right around my birthday, he had called my mom to get the old Chex Mix recipe. And he was ma- and so when he opened, it was that real like, like, uh, uh, like in a cartoon where, uh, The scent like actually like grabs Bugs Bunny by the nose.

• 52:39Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 52:40Speaker 07

And so that, but that is very much my, I would say my favorite smell.

• 52:44Jessie Ware?

I love that. I'm gonna try and make that. Do you think it's the buttery scent?

• 52:48Speaker 07

I think the butter. I think none of the, uh, parts that make it good are good for you. But I gotta get, get you my mom's recipe, cause there's some, there's some knockoff recipes out there that try to make it too fancy.

• 52:58Jessie Ware?

And you call it Chex Mix?

• 52:59Speaker 07

  We do, yeah.

• 53:00Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 53:01Speaker 07

Are you okay with that title?

• 53:02Jessie Ware?

Do you think? I'm kind of, but I don't know if we can get all the ingredients at home, but we can improvise with like a shrimp.

• 53:08Speaker 07

We're gonna, we're gonna, we're gonna send you.

• 53:10Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 53:10Speaker 07

  Yeah, I don't, I'm already worried that you're improvising.

• 53:13Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, I, yeah.

• 53:16Jessie Ware?

Seth Meyers, thank you so much for coming on.

• 53:18Speaker 07

Did I do okay? Did I make the cut for another visit?

• 53:20Jessie Ware?

  Absolutely.

• 53:21Speaker 07

  This was the best.

• 53:22Jessie Ware?

Are you, I feel bad that we didn't cook.

• 53:25Speaker 07

  I was fine. I had a babka, I had a mimosa.

• 53:27Jessie Ware?

Well, it's been a pleasure to have you on and actually chat to you. You always, can I just say, I know, and everyone probably says this. You always make time for the guests when you come on, like when I've sung on your show, we always get a really nice photo. I love your photography for that.

• 53:39Speaker 07

He's very good. Lloyd, he's from Scotland.

• 53:40Jessie Ware?

  Love that. Lloyd?

• 53:42Speaker 07

  Lloyd.

• 53:42Jessie Ware?

Lloyd. Love Lloyd. Like, I also realize that I look really young in it, so that's really nice. Cause and, and that's nice. And it's like, I feel like.

• 53:50Speaker 07

Of, of the pictures of us together, I like the first one.

• 53:56Jessie Ware?

And it's just really, you're, you make everyone feel so special and it's, it's, you're, you're brilliant at what you do. And you're very funny and.

• 54:03Speaker 07

Let me just say, I mean, obviously we've met a couple of times on the show, but we've never properly chatted.

• 54:08Jessie Ware?

Terrified pop star in that situation, so now.

• 54:11Speaker 07

Exponential improvement in our friendship and what a delight. I mean, I, I, truth be told, I came in with very high expectations.

• 54:18Jessie Ware?

  No, I know. Yeah, no.

• 54:20Speaker 07

I mean, again, you, you listen and it sounds like it's gonna be a blast and it, and it even was more fun than I thought.

• 54:24Jessie Ware?

Thank you. Did we argue in there?

• 54:27Speaker 07

I would have liked a little bit more. The, the mother-daughter tension. That's kind of my kink.

• 54:34Jessie Ware?

  It's kind of mine now.

• 54:51Speaker 06

  Seth Meyers, what a guy.

• 54:53Jessie Ware?

I knew it, I just knew. He's even, I loved having an hour and a half with him to just chat.

• 54:58Speaker 06

  Those eyes.

• 55:00Jessie Ware?

Yeah, well, you pointed that out very quickly, Lenny.

• 55:02Speaker 06

Sorry, I couldn't help it. They're kind of shine at you. They're kind of bright sapphire blue. Yeah, he was lovely and so warm.

• 55:10Jessie Ware?

  He's so nice.

• 55:11Speaker 06

And so nice. And I loved hearing stories about his family. He's a family man.

• 55:16Jessie Ware?

  Absolutely.

• 55:17Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 55:17Jessie Ware?

You can watch his HBO special, Dad Mum Walking, on HBO if you've got HBO. Can we get it in the UK? We're going to find where you can watch Dad Mum Walking and put it in the show notes. Mum, that's it.

• 55:29Speaker 06

  I know, I'm quite.

• 55:30Jessie Ware?

  I'm sad.

• 55:31Speaker 06

Me too. Thank you, the High Line standard, because they've been so helpful and kind.

• 55:37Jessie Ware?

Yeah, shout out to Christian and Emily.

• 55:39Speaker 06

Christian, Emily and Elijah and Nadine, who looked after me.

• 55:42Jessie Ware?

Who gave you lots of wine.

• 55:43Speaker 06

Lots of wine. It's been such good fun that we've got to do it again.

• 55:48Jessie Ware?

I think we do. It's been such a hoot. We've had so much fun. Also, thank you to Jake Cohen for lending us his kitchen.

• 55:56Speaker 06

  Being a food facilitator.

• 55:58Jessie Ware?

And also giving us some gorgeous dishes to serve. His cookbook is out in September, Dinner Party Animal. And.

• 56:05Speaker 06

We're just off to the airport now.

• 56:07Jessie Ware?

I don't want to go home. I want to see my children. I can't wait.

• 56:10Speaker 06

  I hope so.

• 56:11Jessie Ware?

I absolutely do, but I do love New York and it's given us everything. And thank you so much to all our guests that have come on this series. Let us know if you'd like us to do another one. And hey, maybe you can even decide another destination that you think we should go to. We're quite up for this.

• 56:27Speaker 06

  Thailand.

• 56:28Jessie Ware?

  Oh.

• 56:33Speaker 06

  After White Lotus.

• 56:34Jessie Ware?

Okay, okay. Yeah, I'm up for it.

• 56:37Speaker 06

  Australia.

• 56:38Jessie Ware?

Australia, sure. Thank you for listening and we'll see you next week.
