• 1:42Conan O'Brien?

Hi, Yasir, welcome to Conan O'Brien Needs a Fan. Hey, Yasir, how are you?

• 1:46Speaker 03

  Oh, hi, man.

• 1:47Conan O'Brien?

  Hi.

• 1:48Speaker 03

Hi, Conan, I'm fine, I'm doing good.

• 1:50Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah, and Sona's here too.

• 1:52Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah, hi, Sona.

• 1:53Speaker 04

  Hi.

• 1:55Conan O'Brien?

Yasir, where are you, where in the world are you right now? Where are you coming to us from?

• 1:59Speaker 03

Yeah, I'm calling you from north France. It's in the southwest of France.

• 2:03Conan O'Brien?

  Got it.

• 2:04Speaker 03

  North-south of France.

• 2:05Conan O'Brien?

  Got it.

• 2:06Speaker 03

  But I'm originally from Morocco.

• 2:08Conan O'Brien?

All right, now tell me, where are you from in Morocco?

• 2:11Speaker 03

  From Casablanca.

• 2:13Conan O'Brien?

  Wow, you're from Casablanca?

• 2:14Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, I was, well, my parents are from there, but I originally was, I was born in three hours from Casablanca, but I lived there. Uh, most of my life after eighteen.

• 2:25Conan O'Brien?

I, I just have to ask right away. Because one of my favorite movies and probably maybe the most iconic movie in noir cinema would be Casablanca. Uh, this, this, when you see the movie Casablanca, is it at all evocative of the Casablanca you know? Or is it, it has nothing to do with Casablanca?

• 2:48Speaker 03

I think, I, I have no idea. I've never watched it.

• 2:52Conan O'Brien?

  What? You've never watched Casablanca?

• 2:55Speaker 05

  What?

• 2:56Speaker 03

I, I did not watch it. I know the movie, but I, I never watched it.

• 3:00Conan O'Brien?

It's like an hour and forty minutes. I, I'm, first of all, I'm coming to Casablanca and I'm gonna show you the movie Casablanca. And then I'm gonna walk around in a trench coat and a hat, okay? And I'm gonna make you dress as a, as a, as a French officer. Okay? That's just what we're doing.

• 3:18Speaker 03

None of those references speak to me.

• 3:20Conan O'Brien?

I, I don't care if they speak to you or not. Yassir, this is, this is, this enrages me. Yeah. I think, uh.

• 3:29Speaker 03

I don't know what is it about actually, so. It could be about another city, so.

• 3:35Conan O'Brien?

Okay, well, anyway. Well, spoiler, it's not. Yeah. It's about the Casablanca that's in Morocco. And in the title. Yeah. Well, well, Yassir, so, uh, tell me a little bit about Casablanca. Do you think I'd fit in okay there? Would I, would people accept me in Casablanca?

• 3:55Speaker 03

Uh, yeah, I think people mostly will accept you in Casablanca. But you would, you would definitely, you would stand out. I mean, you're tall, I think. Uh, I don't know what, six feet four in me, in centimeters, but I think you'd be taller than the average pair of people.

• 4:10Conan O'Brien?

We're gonna find out for you right now how many centimeters tall I am, thanks to Eduardo, who has an app just for this question, which we get all the time. How tall are you in centimeters? And he. A hundred and ninety-five. I'm a hundred and ninety-five centimeters.

• 4:21Speaker 03

Oh, no, okay. No, no, no, you're taller than, than everybody I know, so.

• 4:26Conan O'Brien?

  Okay.

• 4:27Speaker 03

No, you'd, you'd stand out. The, the hair, the, we don't have lots of redheads in Casablanca, so I think you'd stand out.

• 4:35Conan O'Brien?

Yeah. Um, someone said, that I talked to, uh, from, um, it's actually from Marrakech, said I, she thinks I look like a camel.

• 4:47Conan O'Brien?

Thanks for having my back on that.

• 4:48Speaker 03

  I mean, there's a resemblance. I can see it.

• 4:50Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, okay. This is great. This is going really well. Well, tell me a little bit about yourself, Yassir. What do you do? What do you like? What's your whole deal, Yassir?

• 5:02Speaker 03

Yeah, well, I'm a project manager for a consultancy, so I work with clients. Mostly, I just go talk to people that are more experienced than me and tell them, "Did you finish the thing that you said you were gonna finish?" And I just update it on a file, and that's my day.

• 5:20Conan O'Brien?

Yassir, this is the plot of Casablanca. This is exactly what it's about. Yeah, it's about a data manager, and he keeps asking people, "You finished? Have you put it on a file?" And then at the end, they put it on a file and they all get on a plane and leave. It's a very good movie. I can't believe you haven't watched it. Yeah, and the lead character is called Yassir.

• 5:38Speaker 03

And it's a noir movie. It's an excel.

• 5:42Conan O'Brien?

So, okay, so what do you like? You know, what do you do for fun? Do you go to the clubs? Tell me you go to the clubs.

• 5:51Speaker 03

No, I wish. I wish. No, I don't go to the clubs. I go to the... Well, in my free time, I go to the beach, because I live next to the beach. So I usually go to the beach. I just go for a swim and hang in there, read a couple of books, or a couple of books. I read something and then I come back.

• 6:10Conan O'Brien?

  Okay, okay.

• 6:11Speaker 03

  Those mostly my weekends.

• 6:13Conan O'Brien?

You read a couple of books and then you come home.

• 6:15Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 6:16Conan O'Brien?

Do you... Are you a social person? Do you have a lot of friends?

• 6:19Speaker 03

I mean, in general, I do have friends. But in Mont, where I live now, a couple of years... I've been living here a couple of years, so I don't have generally much, a lot of friends. So I usually go to social things alone.

• 6:34Conan O'Brien?

Oh, okay. Hey, it sounds like you need a friend.

• 6:37Speaker 03

  Yeah, that's what I'm calling, I think.

• 6:40Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, yeah. This is really nice. This is a good connection.

• 6:43Speaker 01

  Will you be his friend?

• 6:44Conan O'Brien?

  No. I'm busy.

• 6:49Conan O'Brien?

No, he doesn't. Until he sees Casablanca, we are not hanging out. Uh, yes, of course I'd be your friend. I'd be glad to be your friend. Do you make friends easily? Or are you someone who's more shy?

• 6:58Speaker 03

I'm, uh, I mean, I'm easy to talk to, but I, uh, I'm more shy, so I wouldn't go to, to talk to people first.

• 7:04Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 7:06Speaker 03

But I make friends at work, so a lot of my friends here are, are my, like, I made them from work, so.

• 7:11Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, I think that's where you meet people. I'm still trying to find a friend at work.

• 7:16Speaker 01

  Good luck.

• 7:16Speaker 04

  Keep looking.

• 7:18Conan O'Brien?

  Move it, buddy.

• 7:20Speaker 04

Don't look to this side of the table.

• 7:21Conan O'Brien?

Yassir, um, how, how could I help you? I like to try and help people when I go to other lands. How could I help you, Yassir?

• 7:31Speaker 03

Yeah, well, I think you can help me, uh, figure out this, uh, this friendship thing. Like, how could I? How, how would I, you know, approach this in a, especially if I'm at a concert or I'm like a, in a bar or something, how would I approach?

• 7:45Speaker 04

What if we did a little role playing?

• 7:46Speaker 03

  It'd not be a-

• 7:47Speaker 04

You're just hanging out at a bar. We'll call it Rick's Joint.

• 7:50Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 7:50Speaker 04

And, uh, you come in and, uh, you're gonna, you see a nice guy and maybe you'll go strike up a conversation.

• 7:55Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, so let's try it right now. We're, we're just gonna make up the name of a, like a bar and we're just gonna say it's Rick's.

• 8:01Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 8:02Conan O'Brien?

Um, and let's just say that it's being, uh, shot in black and white. And let's just say that you, you've come in there, you have special papers you've been given that you have to hide because you can't be caught with these papers, okay?

• 8:15Speaker 03

  This is very specific.

• 8:16Conan O'Brien?

No, I'm, it's just, I'm just giving generalities.

• 8:18Speaker 04

  This piano player named Sam.

• 8:20Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, okay, and, and, and, yeah, exactly. And, um, there's nice music playing in the background. You must remember this. A kiss is just a kiss.

• 8:29Speaker 01

  This setup for this improv.

• 8:31Speaker 03

How do you both know the lyrics of this song?

• 8:33Conan O'Brien?

The fundamental things apply as time goes by. And then you're, you walk in, you're sort of like Peter Laurie. You're like, hey, man. You know, Ren and Stimpy? Oh, I changed my name. Yeah, you're sort of, but your name is Yassir.

• 8:52Conan O'Brien?

And you're like, hey. But anyway, as I say, you come in and you see me and I'm sitting there. Um, I'm, you know, classic Conan, stiff upper lip.

• 9:03Speaker 01

Oh, my God, you're Humphrey Bogart?

• 9:05Conan O'Brien?

I didn't say that. I said, I've just got a stiff upper lip.

• 9:07Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 9:08Conan O'Brien?

And I'm sitting there and I have a Scotch. Um, that was a big gulp of water you just took, Yassir. I guess I'm making this too long. You just had to hydrate during my setup. That's a new low for me. Did you see that gulp he took? That was a massive bottle. I'm getting into character.

• 9:25Speaker 04

He just ate a protein bar.

• 9:34Conan O'Brien?

You know, winning an award, that's a big achievement, right?

• 9:36Speaker 01

  Yeah, I love awards.

• 9:37Conan O'Brien?

Every now and then in life, maybe something nice like that comes your way. Winning them consistently is almost impossible. It just doesn't happen, you know? Well, guess what? Winning five times in six years? You know what that sounds like to me? Sustained excellence.

• 9:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 13:07Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, it's about being yourself. Turn your holiday time into Miller time by enjoying a Miller Lite in a place where you're free to enjoy yourself on a walk with a cousin. With a cousin? Why are they getting all specific about it?

• 13:18Speaker 01

  Because it's family.

• 13:19Conan O'Brien?

But what about a niece or a nephew?

• 13:20Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 13:23Conan O'Brien?

Like a walk with an ex-wife. I don't know. I mean, they're just throwing, that's a weird, they just made a very specific choice.

• 13:29Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 13:30Conan O'Brien?

The original light beer since 1975 and still iconic more than 50 years later. I like to be with my bros, my chums, my posse, crack open a Miller Lite, take a swig, a sip, look around and see my friends. We've known each other forever and we're just hanging out.

• 13:57Speaker 01

Yeah, you guys are just doing chest bumps and high-fiving.

• 14:00Conan O'Brien?

  Oh my god.

• 14:23Conan O'Brien?

And you're up. Enter and you see Conan and you try to make friends. Go. Oh, hi Conan, is this seat taken?

• 14:31Conan O'Brien?

Of all the joints and all the women, he has to come into mine. I don't really enjoy people coming. I'm just realizing that now.

• 14:40Speaker 05

Oh my god, it always goes to Nixon.

• 14:43Speaker 01

  Who is that?

• 14:44Conan O'Brien?

You think I'm a crook? I'm not a crook. My mother had a good Republican cloth coat.

• 14:52Conan O'Brien?

She was a Quaper, a Quaker.

• 14:55Speaker 05

  Quaper?

• 14:56Conan O'Brien?

  A Quaper.

• 14:58Conan O'Brien?

She was a Quaper, but then she saw a doctor and she had it first. Then she was a Quaker. Yassir, hey Yassir, I'm Conan. It's, uh, hey, man, you seem like a nice guy. You seem funny. You seem nice. Uh, maybe we should hang out sometime. What do you like to do? Let's, hey, maybe we'll go see a classic movie.

• 15:14Speaker 05

No, he just asked if the seat was taken.

• 15:17Speaker 04

You might wanna move on to someone else.

• 15:19Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah, no.

• 15:21Speaker 05

  What happened?

• 15:21Conan O'Brien?

Yassir, maybe I came on too strong. I might have come on too strong.

• 15:24Speaker 03

  I think so.

• 15:25Conan O'Brien?

Let's try it again. Let's try it again. Let's try it again, and you go. You go first.

• 15:31Speaker 03

  Oh, hi, Conan.

• 15:32Conan O'Brien?

Oh, you know me. You're familiar with. You're familiar with my work?

• 15:36Speaker 03

Oh, yeah, no, this, yeah, the premise is okay.

• 15:39Speaker 04

Yeah, this is just some guy. You're some guy.

• 15:41Conan O'Brien?

  I'm not Conan.

• 15:41Speaker 04

Let's say you guys are at a McDonald's, okay?

• 15:44Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah.

• 15:45Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 15:46Speaker 03

Hi, what, what do you, what's the, what's the best, uh, what's the best menu out here?

• 15:52Conan O'Brien?

I don't work here. I just got to, I just landed for the first time. I just landed for the first time. I come to Morocco. I go to my favorite McDonald's. You're from here and you ask me what's good?

• 16:08Conan O'Brien?

What's your path? What's your, what's your, what's your problem, buddy?

• 16:14Speaker 04

  It's not you, Yassir.

• 16:16Conan O'Brien?

Yassir, I, Yassir, I, that's again on me. I think, you know what? I was jet lagged. I was jet lagged.

• 16:22Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 16:23Speaker 04

Why don't you go up to him?

• 16:25Conan O'Brien?

Okay, I'll go up to you, Yassir.

• 16:30Conan O'Brien?

Hey, uh, I'm new here. I just flew in from, uh, from Los Angeles, and I've just arrived in Morocco. This is my first time. Uh, my name's Conan. What's your name?

• 16:42Speaker 03

Oh, uh, my name is Yassir.

• 16:44Conan O'Brien?

Oh, Yassir. Oh, how's it going? Uh, do you like Casablanca?

• 16:48Speaker 03

I mean, I live here, so yeah.

• 16:49Conan O'Brien?

Well, hey, there are people that live in all kinds of cities, you know? People that live in, uh, Cleveland. Yeah, I don't assume they all love it, you know? So, uh, you might have opinions. Hey, if you live in Casablanca, uh, and you were born here, you must know the movie Casablanca.

• 17:05Speaker 05

  Oh, God.

• 17:09Speaker 03

  I heard it's pretty good.

• 17:11Conan O'Brien?

Pretty good, it's in class, we haven't seen it.

• 17:16Conan O'Brien?

Um, Yassir, again, I went to rage, that's always what I do, and I, I made a mistake. Uh, I apologize. Okay, tell me about the food, what's your favorite meal in Casablanca?

• 17:28Speaker 03

Oh, I, uh, my favorite food there is couscous. So I, I, that's my favorite dish.

• 17:34Conan O'Brien?

Okay, and what's your go-to meal that you go to?

• 17:38Speaker 03

Well, my go-to meal is fast food, so I usually go for a McDonald's.

• 17:43Conan O'Brien?

  Seriously, you go to McDonald's?

• 17:45Speaker 04

  That's why you were there.

• 17:45Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, but wait, what's your, what's your favorite, what's your favorite meal at McDonald's?

• 17:51Speaker 03

Uh, a Big Mac, I usually take a Big Mac with fries and a Diet Coke.

• 17:56Conan O'Brien?

Oh, a little healthy flourish at the end.

• 17:59Conan O'Brien?

  Wait, so.

• 18:00Speaker 03

  It's always balanced.

• 18:01Conan O'Brien?

I love this, I love this, I love, I love this life, I love this world where I can talk to someone who's living in Morocco and steeped in that centuries-old culture and ask them, what do you, what's you, what do you love to eat?

• 18:15Speaker 04

He's like, I like a Big Mac, but not the movie Casablanca.

• 18:18Conan O'Brien?

You know Big Mac, but you like a Big Mac, and what do you get, what's your order? You Big Mac, you said fries, large fries or small?

• 18:24Speaker 03

Fries, no, just a, a small potatoes, I don't take the fries, I take the potatoes. I don't know if, if you have them.

• 18:31Conan O'Brien?

  What is that?

• 18:32Speaker 03

It's like, there are fries, and, uh, there are fries, like the normal McDonald's fries, and there, there are potatoes, they are like, they're kind of red. They're, they're smaller and thicker and red.

• 18:43Conan O'Brien?

Okay, no, we don't have little, uh.

• 18:45Speaker 03

  With the crema.

• 18:46Speaker 04

No, you, you love McDonald's, right?

• 18:48Speaker 01

  I love McDonald's.

• 18:49Speaker 04

So you, as a resident expert, we don't have those, right?

• 18:51Speaker 01

No, we don't have that, but we don't have that here, that must be a, that must be a Moroccan thing.

• 18:55Speaker 03

  They're huge in Morocco.

• 18:57Conan O'Brien?

Okay, do they have any special, uh, do they have anything in Morocco besides the potatoes that?

• 19:03Speaker 03

Oh yeah, they have goat cheese.

• 19:05Conan O'Brien?

  What?

• 19:05Speaker 03

They, they have, like, they have a McNugget, like, uh, a goat cheese, it's like a make, shaped like a McNugget.

• 19:11Speaker 04

  Oh, that sounds good.

• 19:12Speaker 03

The inside, it's all goat cheese.

• 19:14Speaker 04

Like breaded and fried goat cheese?

• 19:16Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 19:17Conan O'Brien?

What are those called? Do they have like Mick, Mick, you know, curdles or Mick taters?

• 19:21Speaker 03

Yeah, do they have funny little names? I honestly have no idea because they are in French, so they're, I don't remember, but I always like goat, it's like goat cheese.

• 19:31Conan O'Brien?

  Okay, okay.

• 19:32Speaker 03

  Inside.

• 19:32Speaker 01

What is it in French? Sorry.

• 19:35Speaker 03

All the menus are in French.

• 19:37Speaker 01

I know, but what's, what's it called in French?

• 19:38Speaker 03

Fromage. Oh. Um, fromage de chèvre.

• 19:43Speaker 01

Oh, see, that was, that was good.

• 19:45Speaker 03

It was good. Yeah. I thought someone was wasting our time. Mick fromage de chèvre.

• 19:51Conan O'Brien?

So, um, and it's just like our McDonald's here. Hey, easy on the water, pal.

• 19:56Speaker 06

  Let him drink.

• 19:57Speaker 01

What do you mean, easy on the water?

• 19:59Conan O'Brien?

I forgot he's in North Africa. It's probably a hundred, 200 degrees. You just said three sentences and you need to complete, replace all of your, your water.

• 20:09Speaker 03

  To rehydrate.

• 20:10Conan O'Brien?

  Uh, okay, so, um, okay.

• 20:13Speaker 03

Yeah, but those are good, especially when you take them hot, like right, right after your order, you get them, they're still hot. They're, they're, it's like it melts in your mouth.

• 20:22Conan O'Brien?

Do you have Happy Meals there?

• 20:25Speaker 03

They do have Happy Meals. I never had Happy Meals, but I, yeah.

• 20:29Speaker 01

  You're an adult.

• 20:29Conan O'Brien?

This is, uh, this is a great, you know what this is? A great cultural transfer.

• 20:33Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 20:34Conan O'Brien?

You telling us exactly how the McDonald's Happy Meal compares to our Happy Meal.

• 20:39Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 20:39Conan O'Brien?

Uh, this is, this is a good way to spend, spend our time, I fear.

• 20:44Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 20:45Conan O'Brien?

But, okay, so it sounds like, uh, you might need my help being a little more assertive with people, uh, to break that barrier, talk to people a little more, right?

• 20:55Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 20:56Conan O'Brien?

How else could I help you?

• 20:57Speaker 03

Yeah. Well, that's it. I don't think you need that much help.

• 21:04Speaker 03

  I'll be coming from you.

• 21:07Conan O'Brien?

Okay. I also might get you some stuff for your wall.

• 21:12Speaker 03

  Hey, I have things.

• 21:15Conan O'Brien?

Okay. There's a little bracket behind you and it looks like you have maybe four postcards.

• 21:22Speaker 03

Yes, from the US, from Boston, because I was there.

• 21:26Conan O'Brien?

Oh, okay, that's nice. That's nice. Wow, so you could show me McDonald's and some Boston postcards. I can't wait. I can't wait to go to Casablanca. I can't wait to travel 55,000 miles and see a postcard of Faneuil Hall.

• 21:46Conan O'Brien?

And then wash it all down with a Coke and a Big Mac.

• 21:50Speaker 03

Some say that's the Moroccan experience.

• 21:52Conan O'Brien?

I think so. I think so. Well, Yassir, I like you. You seem like a fine gentleman and I do implore you to watch Casablanca at some point in your life.

• 22:03Speaker 03

Yeah, I think I'll do it.

• 22:04Conan O'Brien?

It may not bear any resemblance to the real Casablanca that you know, but you know, come on, you should check it out, don't you think?

• 22:13Speaker 03

  All right.

• 22:13Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 22:14Speaker 03

  Okay, I'll give it a...

• 22:14Conan O'Brien?

I watched all episodes of Boston Legal just because it was Boston, you know? I just, I can't believe I just threw that out there. That was such a dumb joke. Um, all right, Yassir, I resign from comedy. It was nice talking to you and I'm gonna come live with you and I'm bringing some stuff for your wall.

• 22:30Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 22:31Conan O'Brien?

Wow, okay. If we could bottle this energy.

• 22:35Speaker 03

No, I'm happy, I'm happy. I love this guy. I love this guy.

• 22:38Conan O'Brien?

I do. You're a lot of fun, Yassir. I really do like you. You've got a good vibe, you know? And I think your resting heart rate is three, three beats a millennia.

• 22:48Speaker 03

I think you're due for some water, though.

• 22:49Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, yeah. Rehydrate now, okay? It's been over eight seconds since you took in some water. All right, take care, Yasser. Bye-bye.

• 22:57Speaker 03

  Thank you, everyone. Bye-bye.
