Hello and welcome to Bandsplain. I am your host, Yasi Salek. Usually, this is a show where I invite an expert guest on to help me explain a cult band or iconic artist. Today's episode is a little different. Just a wee bonus episode for you guys in which we come together to learn some British slang with the help of our special guest, Matt Helders of the band The Arctic Monkeys.

• 2:36Yasi Salek?

Matt, do you have your list prepared?

• 2:38Speaker 05

I do. I've been thinking about this for...

• 2:41Yasi Salek?

  I appreciate you doing this.

• 2:42Speaker 05

I put some time into this.

• 2:43Yasi Salek?

You did kind of jump at the chance to humiliate me and embarrass me in a public setting, and I appreciate that.

• 2:48Speaker 05

  Some would say volunteer.

• 2:50Yasi Salek?

  Really?

• 2:51Speaker 05

I want to be there in person and see this. I have nothing to do except come and embarrass you.

• 2:57Yasi Salek?

All right, should we get started?

• 2:59Speaker 05

Yeah, and I'm gonna, I feel like I'm starting pretty simple with bloke.

• 3:05Yasi Salek?

Okay, love this one, because a bloke is just a guy, right? However, let me ask you a question. The taxonomy, because like, all guys are blokes, right? Like, you're a bloke.

• 3:16Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 3:17Yasi Salek?

  But a lad?

• 3:19Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 3:19Yasi Salek?

  Not all lads.

• 3:21Speaker 05

  Accrual equal.

• 3:23Yasi Salek?

Hashtag not all lads. But all lads are blokes, but all blokes are not lads.

• 3:31Speaker 05

  Right, yeah.

• 3:31Yasi Salek?

  Is that correct?

• 3:32Speaker 05

  I would say so.

• 3:33Yasi Salek?

Do you identify as a lad?

• 3:34Speaker 05

You know what it kind of is as well, though? It's like, if you, it's sometimes the way you say it, but lad would definitely be more used like, oh, he's a bit of a lad. And that'd be like, Jack the Lad, or a lad about town.

• 3:46Yasi Salek?

  Jack the Lad?

• 3:47Speaker 05

Yeah, Jack the Lad. I'm sure it comes from that, where it's like...

• 3:49Yasi Salek?

Is that like Johnny Nomates, where like, it doesn't matter what the person's name is, he's just Jack the Lad?

• 3:54Speaker 05

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 3:55Yasi Salek?

So, his name is not actually Jack?

• 3:56Speaker 05

I'm sure it came from some actual Jack.

• 3:57Yasi Salek?

  Got it.

• 3:58Speaker 05

But a lad would be someone, yeah, who's just like, I should know the American equivalent by now, but...

• 4:03Yasi Salek?

  I think it's like, bro.

• 4:05Speaker 05

Yeah, yeah, it would, yeah, be a bit of a bro.

• 4:06Yasi Salek?

Kind of. You don't have like a one-to-one.

• 4:07Speaker 05

Yeah, it would be a bit of a bro.

• 4:09Yasi Salek?

Because a lad's kind of like a football hooligan, they start fights in the terrace.

• 4:14Speaker 05

Yeah lad, and then you'd have chav amongst that.

• 4:17Yasi Salek?

Chav are the ones that wear the tracksuits.

• 4:20Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 4:20Yasi Salek?

  Kappa.

• 4:21Speaker 05

Chav within a lad kappa, you'd get some, as long as it like all matches and you look like you might have stolen a car.

• 4:26Yasi Salek?

Can chavs be from anywhere or they?

• 4:29Speaker 05

  Yeah, that's a good one.

• 4:30Yasi Salek?

  That's not a regional.

• 4:30Speaker 05

  Up and down the country.

• 4:31Yasi Salek?

  Got it.

• 4:32Speaker 05

  You get chavs everywhere.

• 4:33Yasi Salek?

  Look at this.

• 4:33Speaker 05

I've been accused of being a chav.

• 4:35Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 4:35Speaker 05

In my time, my early days.

• 4:36Yasi Salek?

You had some kappa ripoff things.

• 4:37Speaker 05

I had some kappa, I had a big windbreaker phase.

• 4:41Yasi Salek?

  A cog- coggle.

• 4:42Speaker 05

  Cogle.

• 4:43Yasi Salek?

  Cogle.

• 4:43Speaker 05

Yeah, see, I should have used that one, cogle. But you knew what it was, you just didn't know how to say it.

• 4:47Yasi Salek?

I had to look it up.

• 4:48Speaker 05

So bloke, lad, they can all be, yeah, related. Bloke probably is older as well, like a lad could be a kid. You wouldn't call a kid a bloke.

• 4:56Yasi Salek?

You wouldn't ca- call a kid a bloke.

• 4:57Speaker 05

But you'd be like, so lad, you'd be like, lads and lasses would be boys and girls.

• 5:02Yasi Salek?

Right. But that doesn't mean they're football hooligans being a bloke.

• 5:05Speaker 05

Exactly. So that's what it does. So it is how you use it. So like, my mom might be like, oh, you know, Steve had a kid. I was like, what did he have? And she'd be like, I had a little lad. That doesn't mean he's gonna steal cars or like.

• 5:16Yasi Salek?

But she wouldn't say Liam Gallagher, what a, what a laddie lad that is.

• 5:19Speaker 05

Well, no, but she might use the tone and be like, it's a bit of a lad.

• 5:22Yasi Salek?

  Oh, so she knows.

• 5:23Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 5:23Yasi Salek?

  That's like a real universal.

• 5:25Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 5:26Yasi Salek?

  What about a geezer?

• 5:27Speaker 05

  I was gonna do geezer.

• 5:29Yasi Salek?

  Oh yeah, let's do it.

• 5:30Speaker 05

But geezer would be a similar way actually, but that could be a bit, um, because you can add to the beginning of that, you could be like, he's a dodgy geezer.

• 5:38Yasi Salek?

  Right.

• 5:38Speaker 05

Which means he's up to no good.

• 5:40Yasi Salek?

What if you, can you be like, what a hot geezer?

• 5:43Speaker 05

No, I don't think you would. He might happen to be.

• 5:46Yasi Salek?

  It's always a derogatory.

• 5:48Speaker 05

  Pretty like negative or.

• 5:49Yasi Salek?

  Okay.

• 5:50Speaker 05

Like, someone might call their friend, like another guy might call their friend a geezer, just being a bit like, you know, he's a bit edgy. It might not necessarily be, he's frowning upon him.

• 6:00Yasi Salek?

  Got it.

• 6:00Speaker 05

But a dodgy geezer, because a diamond geezer is like a, he's cool with the, I'm like, oh, he's great, he's a diamond geezer.

• 6:07Yasi Salek?

  Diamond geezer.

• 6:08Speaker 05

So I suppose it doesn't always meet, again, it's how you use it, but I think, yeah, like, on the surface, it's not necessarily good.

• 6:13Yasi Salek?

Okay, if I was keeking with my girls and I was like, that's a fit bloke?

• 6:18Speaker 05

  Fit bloke, yeah.

• 6:19Yasi Salek?

  Okay.

• 6:19Speaker 05

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, fit bloke.

• 6:20Yasi Salek?

I'm keeping that in my pocket for when I go across the pond to find my husband, which you have failed to do.

• 6:26Speaker 05

Yeah, we're still working on it.

• 6:27Yasi Salek?

  Okay, great.

• 6:28Speaker 05

  It's never too late.

• 6:29Yasi Salek?

Well, it does at some point become too late, but go on, go on.

• 6:33Speaker 05

Okay, well then I've got, people everywhere say this, but I just, I always hear it in a northern accent. And it is daft.

• 6:39Yasi Salek?

  Daft means like stupid.

• 6:41Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 6:41Yasi Salek?

But is it like, you know how there's like ways to say like stupid, but it's like, oh.

• 6:46Speaker 05

It could be silly as well. It's probably more silly. Because again, you could be like.

• 6:51Yasi Salek?

Like it's not you fucking idiot.

• 6:53Speaker 05

No, no, but you could, well, it depends, because you could be like you daft cunt. And that would be like bad.

• 6:58Yasi Salek?

Cunt is a different, that should be on your list, honestly. It's a whole different meaning over in your part of town.

• 7:03Speaker 05

That's true. Yeah, because that can be quite casually used. But you can also be like, for example, if we're having a meal and it's all like northern people. And one of us offers to pay, which probably wouldn't happen up north, to be honest, but.

• 7:16Yasi Salek?

  Okay, northern people are cheap.

• 7:18Speaker 05

And I wanna pay, yeah. But I wanna be the one to pay for it. I'd be like, don't be daft, put your wallet away.

• 7:22Yasi Salek?

Oh, don't be daft. Yeah, it's kind of like, don't be.

• 7:24Speaker 05

So you can be like silly, don't be silly, I'm getting this.

• 7:26Yasi Salek?

  Sorry, you guys are tight.

• 7:28Speaker 05

Tight, yeah, tight, yeah. We're known to be a bit tight.

• 7:30Yasi Salek?

Yeah, I'm learning a new language.

• 7:32Speaker 05

  Wanker.

• 7:33Yasi Salek?

This word for me is like pornography, do you know what I mean? Where it's like, I know it when I see it. But it's very difficult to define.

• 7:41Speaker 05

And, well, and to be honest, I thought, when I wrote it down, I thought, how will I even explain this?

• 7:45Yasi Salek?

  Exactly.

• 7:46Speaker 05

Because it comes from wank, which would just be to masturbate.

• 7:49Yasi Salek?

  Right.

• 7:50Speaker 05

No, no, then it's like jerk off, like he's a jerk off.

• 7:52Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 7:53Speaker 05

Which always sounds funny to me too, because that's like an act, an act.

• 7:56Yasi Salek?

Yeah, it's not, it's not the verb.

• 7:59Speaker 05

Yeah, exactly, yeah. But yeah, but you'd be right. So that one, if you're a wanker.

• 8:04Yasi Salek?

  That's a great one.

• 8:05Speaker 05

You know, like, it isn't really nice to say.

• 8:06Yasi Salek?

It's really nice. It really rolls off the tongue.

• 8:08Speaker 05

And because it's so English, I remember them saying it on like Fresh Prince of Bel Air and getting away with it. That's what I've always liked about like English, like swear words.

• 8:15Yasi Salek?

Oh yeah, we could get away with it.

• 8:16Speaker 05

Because you can then say it on like Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

• 8:18Yasi Salek?

Now, if I cannot say it wanker, can I say winker? Or I just sound, I sound like a wank, I sound like a wanker.

• 8:27Speaker 05

Yeah, no, it's funny, yeah, it's like, it's like when Americans say, let's go for a pint. It always sounds a lot funnier.

• 8:34Yasi Salek?

  How do you say it?

• 8:35Speaker 05

No, I would say that, but like in an American accent.

• 8:37Yasi Salek?

  Let's go for a pint.

• 8:39Speaker 05

Yeah, you wouldn't. You just says go for a beer.

• 8:41Yasi Salek?

It's it's just like so humiliating because it's not just that I have an American accent. I also have the dumb bitch vocal fry on top.

• 8:49Speaker 05

But and it's so it's not it's unfair to you because all you're doing is saying the same words. But it's a stunt.

• 8:55Yasi Salek?

  Wanker.

• 8:56Speaker 05

  But wanker, yeah, wanker.

• 8:57Yasi Salek?

And then also the corollary that you could call something wank.

• 9:01Speaker 05

  Yeah, it's wank.

• 9:02Yasi Salek?

  Which I like.

• 9:03Speaker 05

I was last night, it was wank.

• 9:04Yasi Salek?

  It was wank.

• 9:05Speaker 05

It's just bad, terrible. Yeah, that is good. I like that one.

• 9:07Yasi Salek?

That one's really good. So far, maybe in running for a contender of one of my favorite.

• 9:11Speaker 05

And even, yeah, and if someone's not good at something like he's wank.

• 9:14Yasi Salek?

  He's wank.

• 9:14Speaker 05

  At that thing.

• 9:15Yasi Salek?

Oh, like he's wank at football.

• 9:17Speaker 05

  Yeah, exactly.

• 9:18Yasi Salek?

Yeah, he's wank at the drums.

• 9:19Speaker 05

Yeah, exactly, which I've never heard.

• 9:21Yasi Salek?

A lot of people have said that about you.

• 9:23Speaker 05

  He's wank.

• 9:23Yasi Salek?

  There's a whole.

• 9:24Speaker 05

He's wank, don't bother. Um, oh, this is a good one.

• 9:27Yasi Salek?

  Okay.

• 9:27Speaker 05

  What is a Johnny?

• 9:30Yasi Salek?

  A Johnny?

• 9:31Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 9:32Yasi Salek?

Just not a Johnny, no maids.

• 9:34Speaker 05

No, and it's a shorter version of something, but saying the whole thing would give it away too much. But we would definitely say a Johnny.

• 9:39Yasi Salek?

It's a man who beats his wife and was priorly a very famous actor.

• 9:45Speaker 05

  Allegedly.

• 9:46Yasi Salek?

  Allegedly, allegedly.

• 9:48Speaker 05

No, it's not. It's not a type of person.

• 9:50Yasi Salek?

  Oh.

• 9:51Speaker 05

It's not. It's weird that it's a name, but it's not a type of person.

• 9:55Yasi Salek?

  Oh, an a toilet.

• 9:57Speaker 05

  No.

• 9:58Yasi Salek?

  A urinal.

• 9:58Speaker 05

John, that would be a John for Americans.

• 10:00Yasi Salek?

Right. Okay. So you guys don't say that. I'm not going to get this one.

• 10:03Speaker 05

  It's a condom.

• 10:04Yasi Salek?

  A Johnny?

• 10:05Speaker 05

Yeah, I don't know why, but it would be rubber Johnny.

• 10:10Speaker 05

Even saying it, I sound like a nine year old again. Yeah, a rubber Johnny. So they'd be like, have you got a Johnny? They'd be like, you know what I mean? But like.

• 10:16Yasi Salek?

  They.

• 10:18Speaker 05

Whoever is interested in having protective states would say, have you got a Johnny? Yeah.

• 10:22Yasi Salek?

And the blokes, not the dodgy geezers, but the diving geezers. Use protection, you guys.

• 10:27Speaker 05

  Yeah, a Johnny. I need a Johnny.

• 10:29Yasi Salek?

Especially with a chav. You don't know where they've been.

• 10:31Speaker 05

  That's true.

• 10:32Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 10:32Speaker 05

  They're not using Johnny's.

• 10:33Yasi Salek?

Okay, a jo- a rubber Johnny.

• 10:35Speaker 05

  Johnny. Johnny is a condom.

• 10:36Yasi Salek?

That's not on my top five, I'm going to tell you.

• 10:39Speaker 05

And now, um, the I had a couple for this, but I'm just going to do this one because I don't want to give it away too much. Bladdered.

• 10:46Yasi Salek?

Oh, okay, babe. Now it's my fucking time to shine. Because one thing, if I know one thing about the British language, it's that much like Eskimos who have like a thousand words for snow, because it's so important in their culture.

• 11:00Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 11:01Yasi Salek?

You guys have a thousand words for being wasted.

• 11:03Speaker 05

  That's exactly why, yeah.

• 11:04Yasi Salek?

Yeah, because it's such a, it's such an important thing in your culture.

• 11:08Speaker 05

We have to say it so much, the new ways of saying it. Which is why, because originally I did write pissed as well.

• 11:13Yasi Salek?

But there's so many more, right?

• 11:14Speaker 05

You say pissed for being angry.

• 11:16Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 11:16Speaker 05

We say pissed, pissed up, bladdered. What else is a particular English one that you've heard? Forgetting drunk. I'm trying to think now, like what I.

• 11:24Yasi Salek?

Bladdered was the one I remember.

• 11:25Speaker 05

Bladdered's the one that I just said, oh, rat arsed.

• 11:28Yasi Salek?

  Rat arsed?

• 11:29Speaker 05

Yeah, but we'd have to say arsed as well.

• 11:31Yasi Salek?

  Oh.

• 11:31Speaker 05

Like it was rat arsed. Which must just be like, that's like a terrible thing. It must be as simple as that, like it's a terrible place to be, I suppose.

• 11:39Yasi Salek?

Let me ask you a linguistic question. What if you were on drugs? It's not bladdered.

• 11:46Speaker 05

Yeah, no, it's not, is it?

• 11:47Yasi Salek?

Something totally different. Out of his head.

• 11:49Speaker 05

  Yeah, off his head.

• 11:51Yasi Salek?

  Off his head.

• 11:51Speaker 05

  Off his nut.

• 11:52Yasi Salek?

Off his nut, so not out of his head, off his head.

• 11:54Speaker 05

  Yeah, off his head.

• 11:55Yasi Salek?

  Off his nut.

• 11:56Speaker 05

Because off his head can just mean he's mad, he's mad as well. It's like, what's wrong with you, he's off his head.

• 12:00Yasi Salek?

  Mad, being crazy.

• 12:01Speaker 05

  Yeah, yeah.

• 12:02Yasi Salek?

  Right.

• 12:02Speaker 05

So then to purposefully get yourself crazy would be probably through drugs.

• 12:07Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 12:07Speaker 05

So then you're off. Off your nut is a good one, that's a bit more London.

• 12:10Yasi Salek?

  Off your nut?

• 12:11Speaker 05

Yeah. And I'm gonna get, like, I'm gonna get off my nut tonight.

• 12:14Yasi Salek?

And then what is your nut?

• 12:15Speaker 05

  It's your head.

• 12:16Yasi Salek?

  Oh, okay.

• 12:16Speaker 05

I think it's also your head, they just like sounds.

• 12:19Yasi Salek?

Different slang that we have here.

• 12:20Speaker 05

Noggin, that'd be a head too.

• 12:22Yasi Salek?

  Noggin.

• 12:22Speaker 05

  Do you say that here?

• 12:23Yasi Salek?

Yeah, we say noggin. But so like, you guys, what we called nuts, you call them bollocks.

• 12:29Speaker 05

Bollocks, yeah. So then that could.

• 12:31Yasi Salek?

Bollocks means a lot of things.

• 12:32Speaker 05

Yeah, how else would you use bollocks, for example? If it weren't talking about testicles.

• 12:36Yasi Salek?

  Okay, like that's shit.

• 12:39Yasi Salek?

That's bollocks? Would you say that?

• 12:41Speaker 05

Yeah, well, that this is the thing.

• 12:44Speaker 05

The main way I use it would be uh bullshit.

• 12:47Yasi Salek?

  Okay, bullshit.

• 12:50Yasi Salek?

Load of bollocks. Never mind the bullshit, here's the sex. Never mind the testicles, here's the suspect.

• 12:57Speaker 05

Like if you didn't believe something that someone's saying, you'd be like, that's bollocks.

• 12:59Yasi Salek?

  Right, bullshit.

• 13:00Speaker 05

  Or if like.

• 13:01Yasi Salek?

  Falsehood.

• 13:02Speaker 05

He was seven feet tall and you'd be like, was he bollocks?

• 13:06Yasi Salek?

  Was he bollocks?

• 13:07Speaker 05

And you say, was he fuck? This is one I didn't realize until I first came to like LA, first started hanging out here. And someone, it was like, have you, have you been to this? Whatever the thing was, was like strange. He was like, have you been to Disneyland? I was like, have I fuck?

• 13:20Yasi Salek?

  Have I fuck?

• 13:21Speaker 05

Have I fuck means like, it's probably like saying like fuck I have.

• 13:24Yasi Salek?

  Oh, interesting.

• 13:27Speaker 05

And then I real- and then I was like, oh yeah, that is weird, isn't it, to say have I fuck?

• 13:30Yasi Salek?

No, but it's kind of cool.

• 13:31Speaker 05

But it's the same thing. It's like, like, so have I bollocks would be the same.

• 13:33Yasi Salek?

How, do you find that you've dropped these things from your speeches, you've been surrounded by Americans?

• 13:38Speaker 05

Yeah, sometimes. And I s- I I try and watch a lot of English TV.

• 13:41Yasi Salek?

  Sure.

• 13:42Speaker 05

  To check back in.

• 13:42Yasi Salek?

You like the show where they're naked?

• 13:44Speaker 05

  Yeah, naked, naked attraction.

• 13:46Yasi Salek?

Naked attraction, you put me onto that.

• 13:47Speaker 05

That's good for, for real, like, broad spectrum of people in England.

• 13:51Yasi Salek?

  Really get the gist.

• 13:54Speaker 05

And then I sometimes just like call friends at home to talk to them for a bit.

• 13:57Yasi Salek?

  Or practice.

• 13:57Speaker 05

  Tune back in.

• 13:58Yasi Salek?

  Practice.

• 13:58Speaker 05

I should have done it on the way here.

• 13:59Yasi Salek?

You should have, you could have really gone back in the.

• 14:02Speaker 05

Like, one of the only podcasts I ever went on, I called him on the way there to make sure I spoke how I'm speak, how I was supposed to speak. I was like, I want to talk like I really talk instead of like.

• 14:12Yasi Salek?

  Right.

• 14:12Speaker 05

  Podcast broadcast voice.

• 14:13Yasi Salek?

You don't want to be dulled down.

• 14:16Speaker 05

I mean, oh no, I want to be.

• 14:18Yasi Salek?

  I want, like, but yes.

• 14:19Speaker 05

  Want to be dumbed down.

• 14:20Yasi Salek?

Dumbed down, back, back to your original form.

• 14:22Speaker 05

  Back to my base level.

• 14:23Yasi Salek?

  Right.

• 14:24Speaker 05

You probably already know what these are, but like, bangers. Cause that, I mean, that can be broad, obviously.

• 14:30Yasi Salek?

  Sausage.

• 14:31Speaker 05

  Yeah, sausage.

• 14:32Yasi Salek?

  Delicious.

• 14:32Speaker 05

  Bangers and mash would be.

• 14:34Yasi Salek?

  Mashed potatoes.

• 14:34Speaker 05

Which also leads me to some rhyming slang, because bangers and mash would be like cockney rhyming slang for something.

• 14:40Yasi Salek?

  Cock and balls.

• 14:41Speaker 05

No, no, if I said bang as a mash, then that would be.

• 14:44Yasi Salek?

  Oh.

• 14:45Speaker 05

The result of that would be um a word.

• 14:48Yasi Salek?

Cockney rhyming is where you're really gonna lose me.

• 14:51Speaker 05

Okay, well, a brief, a brief thing about, and I'm only, I'm speaking for Cockneys here and I'm not a Cockney by any means. I know plenty of them.

• 14:58Yasi Salek?

  They're gonna come cancel you.

• 14:59Speaker 05

Yeah, I know enough of them to like be aware of the rhyming slang. And there was like, I remember as a kid, my friend, his mom had the, there's like a rhyming slang dictionary. It's like official rhyming slang. And like flying squad would mean god. And apples and pears is stairs. These are all the basic ones.

• 15:17Yasi Salek?

Apples and pears, like don't fall down the apples and pears, you're so bladdered.

• 15:21Speaker 05

Exactly, yeah. But then it gets so, it gets so far that you then, once everyone knows it, you only have to say apples.

• 15:29Yasi Salek?

Right, that's like, okay, that's like, um.

• 15:31Speaker 05

So when you were on syrup.

• 15:33Yasi Salek?

  Syrup of figs.

• 15:34Speaker 05

Yes, I guess, yeah. Can you see a syrup?

• 15:36Yasi Salek?

I sent a email to some Scottish friends, cause a lot of those transfers over.

• 15:40Speaker 05

Yeah, people just know it, yeah.

• 15:42Yasi Salek?

And I, I did have my Gallagher wig on and someone wrote back and was like, that's quite a syrup.

• 15:48Speaker 05

Yeah, that's when I, that's when I really like it, when you know it just from the one word.

• 15:51Yasi Salek?

And I was like, oh, what now? And then I had to go Google and it came up syrup of figs because figs rhymes with wigs.

• 15:58Speaker 05

And here's another interesting one that I didn't know until probably six months ago. That why a raspberry is called a raspberry when you blow a raspberry?

• 16:06Yasi Salek?

  I know.

• 16:06Speaker 05

It's cause raspberry tart is fart. So that, even that comes from Cockney rhyming slang and everyone knows what a raspberry is, that's worldwide.

• 16:12Yasi Salek?

  That, that's really spread, that's, that's.

• 16:13Speaker 05

So I'm like, that's when we really did it.

• 16:16Yasi Salek?

Export of the Cockneys, I think, is the.

• 16:17Speaker 05

I mean, yeah, that's like cold, that's changed culture.

• 16:20Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 16:21Speaker 05

No, everyone knows what blowing a raspberry is. Not everyone knows it means raspberry tart.

• 16:24Yasi Salek?

  Maybe not like Gen Z.

• 16:26Speaker 05

Yeah, then I'm doing rations, I probably.

• 16:28Yasi Salek?

  Raspberry is.

• 16:29Speaker 05

  You have to ask permission.

• 16:30Yasi Salek?

  His consent is required, yeah.

• 16:32Speaker 05

Um, I assume you already know what telly is.

• 16:35Yasi Salek?

Oh babe, I'm so intimately involved with telly at home.

• 16:38Speaker 05

What would a, um, this is, this is really like geographically specific as well to the north. A butty, or as I would say, a buty, B U T T Y.

• 16:49Yasi Salek?

  Buty, oh, a cigarette?

• 16:52Speaker 05

  No.

• 16:52Yasi Salek?

  Oh, it should be though.

• 16:54Speaker 05

Yeah, I suppose it should, yeah.

• 16:55Yasi Salek?

  Is it a food item?

• 16:56Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 16:57Yasi Salek?

Okay, oh my god, okay, we're getting closer.

• 17:01Yasi Salek?

  Is it a biscuit?

• 17:02Speaker 05

  No.

• 17:03Yasi Salek?

  Is it a meat product?

• 17:07Speaker 05

  It can involve meat.

• 17:08Yasi Salek?

Okay. Is it a, oh my god, now I have to think of other British food names that I don't even know.

• 17:16Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 17:17Yasi Salek?

Cause you guys are always eating like.

• 17:18Speaker 05

It's hard to give clues on this one.

• 17:19Yasi Salek?

  Cheese on toast or like.

• 17:22Speaker 05

Yeah, so our grilled cheese would just be either a toastie.

• 17:25Yasi Salek?

  A toastie.

• 17:25Speaker 05

Or cheese on toast. Just like an open-faced grilled cheese.

• 17:28Yasi Salek?

But it only is one bread.

• 17:29Speaker 05

Yeah, but you could have two.

• 17:31Yasi Salek?

  Two toasties.

• 17:32Speaker 05

And then suck it open face.

• 17:33Yasi Salek?

  Instead of just.

• 17:34Speaker 05

And just don't put them together.

• 17:35Yasi Salek?

Is it a, like a puff pastry?

• 17:38Speaker 05

Uh, no. It's more like a category of food, I suppose.

• 17:41Yasi Salek?

  I don't know, Ben.

• 17:42Speaker 05

  Sandwich.

• 17:43Yasi Salek?

  Bate?

• 17:43Speaker 05

  A bate.

• 17:44Yasi Salek?

Do you know where it comes from?

• 17:45Speaker 05

Bacon buddy. Um, no, because not everyone calls it that. It's really just like.

• 17:50Yasi Salek?

  At your house, actually.

• 17:52Yasi Salek?

  Just on your street.

• 17:52Speaker 05

It'll be like, I think, maybe, maybe it is all over England, that one. Cause England, they have different names for what the type of bread is.

• 18:00Yasi Salek?

  Okay.

• 18:01Speaker 05

Like, like we'd call it a bread cake.

• 18:03Yasi Salek?

  A bread cake?

• 18:04Speaker 05

Like a certain, it'd be like a burger bun, kinda, would be a bread cake.

• 18:07Yasi Salek?

  A bread cake?

• 18:08Speaker 05

Some people call it a roll, some people call it a bomb cake.

• 18:12Yasi Salek?

  Bread cake is?

• 18:13Speaker 05

Bread cake is just like, they saw two things, like, oh, it kinda looks like cake, but it's made of bread. Let's call it a bread cake.

• 18:17Yasi Salek?

Literally, it's so great. That's a bread. Cake is also bread.

• 18:20Speaker 05

What you see. Yeah, but I mean, they were expecting something sweet and they're gonna be, you know, let down when they dive into it. Do you know what, um, mucky means?

• 18:29Yasi Salek?

  Mucky?

• 18:30Speaker 05

  Mucky. M U C K Y, I suppose is how you spell it.

• 18:33Yasi Salek?

  Dirty? Oh, great.

• 18:35Speaker 05

Big, but the, what, what else would you say? Uh, cause I had manky and mucky.

• 18:39Yasi Salek?

  What's manky?

• 18:40Speaker 05

Manky's same, but it's kinda like, that for me, uh, paints more of a picture than mucky though. Mucky would be like, you got dirt on your jeans.

• 18:47Yasi Salek?

So we're talking like, if a dodgy geezer hasn't showered in a long time, he's manky.

• 18:53Speaker 05

Yeah, yeah, but my, you think like things could be manky as well. I reckon you'd describe a person as mucky more than mine.

• 18:59Yasi Salek?

  Okay.

• 19:00Speaker 05

Manky's good. I don't know, they're both kind of good. But mucky can mean like in that way, it could be much like she's dirty as in like that way too. You know, promiscuous.

• 19:07Yasi Salek?

  Oh, promiscuous.

• 19:09Speaker 05

Do you know what chuffed means?

• 19:11Yasi Salek?

Kind of. It's like I'm deeply pleased.

• 19:15Speaker 05

  Yes, however.

• 19:16Yasi Salek?

  However.

• 19:17Speaker 05

This one is confusing because you would say chuffed like you'd be like if you were pleased with yourself or pleased with something happened, you could be like, I'm chuffed to bits. I mean, it's like I'm really, I'm particularly chuffed.

• 19:29Yasi Salek?

  Okay.

• 19:29Speaker 05

Like that's like, I'm over the moon.

• 19:31Yasi Salek?

You wouldn't say I'm really chuffed.

• 19:32Speaker 05

I think maybe people would. Yeah, I'm very, very chuffed about this. Chuffed to bits just seems like the most common one for, yeah, like I'm over the moon.

• 19:40Yasi Salek?

  No.

• 19:40Speaker 05

But if you were to say, like my mom might replace like fuck off with chuff off. Cause she like didn't want to swear. Now, now she does. Yeah. But like when we were kids, she would have said chuff off. Or she just said chuffing out instead of fucking out. So like, it could be used for that too.

• 19:58Yasi Salek?

  But is chuffed, be honest.

• 20:00Speaker 05

But chuffed is like, I'm chuffed.

• 20:02Yasi Salek?

Do like young people say, like, do you even say that? Or is that kind of more of like an older generation?

• 20:06Speaker 05

People um in Sheffield, people in Yorkshire would probably say that. Um they'd be like, I'm dead chuffed with this.

• 20:12Yasi Salek?

They're a little behind the times.

• 20:13Speaker 05

Like if, yeah, they'd just be like.

• 20:16Yasi Salek?

  I'm dead chuffed.

• 20:16Speaker 05

Like if they made something good, like they made you a nice cake, like I'm dead chuffed with this, you're gonna love it.

• 20:21Yasi Salek?

Like the second Arctic Monkeys album.

• 20:23Speaker 05

  Dead chuffed with that.

• 20:24Yasi Salek?

  Dead chuffed.

• 20:24Speaker 05

Yeah. Uh, this is probably one you don't know. Bagsy.

• 20:28Yasi Salek?

He's an, he's an artist. No one knows his identity.

• 20:32Speaker 05

What I'm really trying to find out is, do you know who Bagsy is?

• 20:36Speaker 05

  No, B A G S Y, Bagsy. It's not a thing. It's, it's, I don't know.

• 20:41Yasi Salek?

Is it a way of being in the world?

• 20:43Speaker 05

  It's, I don't know. I, I, until I reveal it, yeah.

• 20:47Yasi Salek?

You would use it to describe a person or no?

• 20:50Speaker 05

  No.

• 20:51Yasi Salek?

I mean, this one feels like I'm not gonna get it.

• 20:54Speaker 05

No, I don't think you will either. Um, it's the same as saying like dibs, like, like you've got dibs on something.

• 21:00Yasi Salek?

Okay, I would, first of all, that makes no sense because Bagsy is clearly an adjective. Okay?

• 21:05Speaker 05

I know, but you'd be saying, you'd say like, or if you're playing a game like. Dibs was the closest thing I could think of, but if you're gonna play like, if you're a kid and you're gonna play a game of like tag.

• 21:16Yasi Salek?

  Okay.

• 21:16Speaker 05

And you don't wanna be the first person to be it, you say Bagsie not it.

• 21:19Yasi Salek?

  Oh, okay.

• 21:20Speaker 05

Like claim, it's like a claim of something.

• 21:21Yasi Salek?

Why does not, why does not it just not cover it?

• 21:25Speaker 05

Not it, that's American, not it, it sounds American to me.

• 21:27Yasi Salek?

You would only say Bagsie, you wouldn't say not it, but you would say Bagsie not it.

• 21:31Speaker 05

Yeah, not it, I'd say Bagsie not it. You have to just, well, cause the Bagsie is the thing that gets it. You have to have like the, you have to be the first person to say it.

• 21:37Yasi Salek?

  Bagsie not it.

• 21:38Speaker 05

Yeah, Bagsie, or you'd be like Bagsie mine, and like if I wanted to have that kinda ties, I was like, like I want that one to mine.

• 21:45Yasi Salek?

If you wanna, if you wanna Bagsie, you can.

• 21:47Speaker 05

Don't wanna claim anything else in this building that's not mine.

• 21:49Yasi Salek?

  You can.

• 21:50Speaker 05

  It's like Bagsie mine.

• 21:50Yasi Salek?

  Bagsie it.

• 21:51Speaker 05

Bagsie not it is just the.

• 21:52Yasi Salek?

Oh, you have to say Bagsie mine? So this word does nothing on its own. You would never say Bagsie.

• 21:57Speaker 05

No, no, no, no, it's like, it's like, it's like Simon Says, I suppose. Like you have to say the Simon Says before you get the thing.

• 22:02Yasi Salek?

  It's a real useless one.

• 22:02Speaker 05

But it is a claim, it's like a way of claiming something.

• 22:05Yasi Salek?

Put it at the bottom of my list.

• 22:06Speaker 05

Bagsie not it. Just, I don't know, as a kid I used it a lot.

• 22:09Yasi Salek?

Okay, you don't use it so much anymore, huh?

• 22:11Speaker 05

No, I don't do Bagsie things anymore.

• 22:13Yasi Salek?

You're not really claiming things around the house.

• 22:15Speaker 05

  I'm just manifesting.

• 22:16Yasi Salek?

Yeah, you're just doing your affirmations in front of the mirror.

• 22:19Speaker 05

Do you know, you obviously know what a quid is.

• 22:21Yasi Salek?

  That's a money.

• 22:22Speaker 05

That's a money, but it would be particularly.

• 22:25Yasi Salek?

  That's a British pound, one.

• 22:26Speaker 05

  One British pound, yeah.

• 22:27Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 22:28Speaker 05

Because then you would have five quid, but then you'd say fiver.

• 22:31Yasi Salek?

  A fiver or tenner.

• 22:32Speaker 05

Tenner. But you wouldn't say twenty.

• 22:34Yasi Salek?

  No.

• 22:34Speaker 05

  Twenty, yeah.

• 22:35Yasi Salek?

  No, that's weird.

• 22:36Speaker 05

  Twenty quid.

• 22:36Yasi Salek?

Okay, but at what point is it not quid? A hundred?

• 22:39Speaker 05

A hundred quid, no, you'd be.

• 22:41Yasi Salek?

  A thousand quid?

• 22:42Speaker 05

A thousand quid, yeah, which does sound weird. Yeah, you would, you would, you'd have to, yeah. But then.

• 22:46Yasi Salek?

  I guess, it's like bucks.

• 22:47Speaker 05

When you, yeah, yeah, it's like bucks. But it's, cause it's not plural, it sounds weird.

• 22:51Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 22:52Speaker 05

  Which I understand.

• 22:52Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 22:53Speaker 05

But when you get to a thousand, you can also then transition into rhyming slang and say a bag of sand, which is grand.

• 23:01Yasi Salek?

  And people.

• 23:02Speaker 05

You owe me a bag of sand.

• 23:03Yasi Salek?

But then they would just say a sand, you owe me a sand?

• 23:05Speaker 05

No, cause you, you usually do the first bit like a bag, but that could be, that'd be different as well.

• 23:10Yasi Salek?

Thing I don't totally get about Cockney rhyming slang is that slang usually seems to be a shortcut.

• 23:18Speaker 05

  And I agree.

• 23:18Yasi Salek?

Whereas Cockney rhyming slang is like, what if we make one word, three words?

• 23:22Speaker 05

Yeah, yeah, and it's also not related to the word in any way. And, cause like boat race is face and.

• 23:28Yasi Salek?

  Boat race?

• 23:29Speaker 05

There's modern ones as well, like nowadays, like. Like they upgraded them throughout the years, like people did, not like officially.

• 23:35Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 23:36Speaker 05

Like Courtney Cox became socks, Brad Pitt became shit.

• 23:40Yasi Salek?

I'm sorry, it, they do it for people as well.

• 23:42Speaker 05

Oh, yeah, people's names, yeah, cause like famous people's names can be used for rhymes.

• 23:46Yasi Salek?

Too much random. I mean, Brad Pitt, I kind of understand, but I did not realize Courtney Cox had such an international celebrity.

• 23:52Speaker 05

Well, they probably could think of anyone else without, like, that rhymes with socks.

• 23:55Yasi Salek?

  Right.

• 23:56Speaker 05

  But then Brian Cox.

• 23:58Yasi Salek?

Yeah, Brian Cox, I mean, he's, he's a country man.

• 24:00Speaker 05

Yeah, he should have been, he should have been involved in that. But they would be, there's a famous cricket player in England called David Gower, and that was shower, that was always shower. So like this was.

• 24:10Yasi Salek?

  Cricket player, you say.

• 24:11Speaker 05

  Yeah, famous in England.

• 24:12Yasi Salek?

  Sure.

• 24:14Speaker 05

So who was cricket legend, but the, so, and then brown bread is dead, like, that's always been that.

• 24:20Yasi Salek?

So when I go to the Cheesecake Factory next.

• 24:22Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 24:22Yasi Salek?

I can be like, I'd like a whole basket of dead, please. And the guy's gonna be like.

• 24:26Speaker 05

You can't reverse, he don't work backwards. No, you have to say he's brown bread, like he's dead.

• 24:31Yasi Salek?

Oh, okay, it's the other way around. You can't, they're not entertained.

• 24:36Speaker 05

No, no, no, you can't go backwards. But so like we used to.

• 24:39Yasi Salek?

Disrespectful to say that someone's brown bread.

• 24:40Speaker 05

Like, I know it sounds too cheerful, I suppose.

• 24:43Yasi Salek?

  Yeah, it's a little light.

• 24:44Speaker 05

But they'd be like, he's brown bread in the David Gower, like he's dead in the shower.

• 24:46Yasi Salek?

Is Snatch, do they speak in coffee?

• 24:49Speaker 05

They do a bit of that in there, probably.

• 24:50Yasi Salek?

I had to watch it with subtitles.

• 24:53Speaker 05

Well, Snatch is even harder, cause then Brad Pitt, speaking of, is doing like a wild Irish accent too, and that's like.

• 24:58Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 24:59Speaker 05

Definitely hard to understand. But all of them, yeah, every guy, Richard Field's probably got Courtney, your rhyming slang in it. It's based around that.

• 25:05Yasi Salek?

  Okay.

• 25:06Speaker 05

No, this is, you definitely won't get this one, but I'm just happy to talk about it. Um, well, cause you know how like people will describe, like for girls will say birds.

• 25:16Yasi Salek?

  Right.

• 25:16Speaker 05

Sometimes. So this is one I'm just gonna, again, I'm just gonna talk about it. So people will say tidy.

• 25:22Yasi Salek?

  Tidy.

• 25:23Speaker 05

But like tidy as in not a mess, but they'll be like, in Barnsley, which is where I went to like school, I lived in High Green, which is like between Sheffield and Barnsley.

• 25:32Yasi Salek?

  Okay.

• 25:32Speaker 05

Barnsley's got an even weirder accent than Sheffield and like.

• 25:35Yasi Salek?

How does the accent change so much?

• 25:37Speaker 05

This is like within two miles or something.

• 25:39Yasi Salek?

  It's a five minute drive.

• 25:40Speaker 05

Yeah, yeah, yeah. And they have different words, they have different words with them.

• 25:42Yasi Salek?

  Forty minute walk.

• 25:43Speaker 05

But they, yeah, you can walk to a different accent. But they'd be like. Like if they went out that weekend, I'd be like, what is it like? They'd be like, oh, great, loads of tidy birds. So they'd say tidy birds for like, good looking girls.

• 25:56Yasi Salek?

So a woman, a bird could be mucky and tidy.

• 26:00Speaker 05

Yeah, you could say mucky bird. I wouldn't say that, obviously.

• 26:02Yasi Salek?

No, you would never. You're a feminist, you're an ally. But.

• 26:06Speaker 05

But I wouldn't know what somebody meant if they said it to me.

• 26:08Yasi Salek?

But I would understand who they were talking about.

• 26:11Speaker 05

Mucky would be a bit more like, you're speaking specifically about sexual things.

• 26:15Yasi Salek?

  Got it.

• 26:16Speaker 05

Tidy would be just like, she's good looking.

• 26:18Yasi Salek?

  Like fit.

• 26:18Speaker 05

  Or as we'd say, fit.

• 26:19Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 26:20Speaker 05

  Fit birds, tidy birds.

• 26:21Yasi Salek?

I learned fit from the streets.

• 26:23Speaker 05

  Fit, but you know.

• 26:24Yasi Salek?

  That was the streets, right?

• 26:25Speaker 05

  Fit, but you know it.

• 26:26Yasi Salek?

But you know it. Great song.

• 26:27Speaker 05

So there's, and he says geezer a lot.

• 26:29Yasi Salek?

He does, yeah. I learned several words from that man.

• 26:32Speaker 05

Well, that's all I had on my list, but I'm happy to discuss other ones.

• 26:34Yasi Salek?

  My number one favorite.

• 26:36Speaker 05

  Which is what?

• 26:36Yasi Salek?

  Johnny no mates.

• 26:37Speaker 05

Oh, yeah, yeah. No, we could talk about it. Oh, you know, in fact, the difference between, so when you told me Johnny no mates, we said Billy no mates.

• 26:44Yasi Salek?

Billy no mates. Well, that's what Liam Gallagher said when I first learned the word.

• 26:48Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 26:48Yasi Salek?

  Billy no mates.

• 26:49Speaker 05

  Yeah, and I don't know if that's.

• 26:50Yasi Salek?

So northern people say Billy no mates.

• 26:52Speaker 05

  Yeah, maybe it's like that.

• 26:52Yasi Salek?

And southern people say Johnny no mates.

• 26:54Speaker 05

And a Billy no mates is, I don't know why people had like, yeah, Billy to the, Billy's on the beginning of a few things, I remember like, I'm trying to think of another example. But Billy no mates was just, my dad uses Billy no mates.

• 27:05Yasi Salek?

When he was making fun of you for being a loser. No.

• 27:08Speaker 05

No, cause like, you rarely get that opportunity with me.

• 27:12Speaker 05

So he goes running, my dad's like a runner.

• 27:15Yasi Salek?

  Okay.

• 27:15Speaker 05

And usually he's like, got someone to run with or a couple of people to run with. If he done, and he's also somebody who like, puts it on Instagram when he's been for a run, like he puts the map, you know, like you do the map.

• 27:24Yasi Salek?

As you should, as you fucking should.

• 27:26Speaker 05

  You know, quick five K.

• 27:27Yasi Salek?

Does he have a lot of followers? He's like an influencer?

• 27:28Speaker 05

No, yeah, I mean, they're all like to monkeys fans.

• 27:31Yasi Salek?

Sure. They're, they're like smashing that, like, they're like, look at it. My elder's dad went on a five mile run today.

• 27:37Speaker 05

Fans run, then he's doing his thing.

• 27:39Yasi Salek?

  Sorry, three kilometers.

• 27:40Speaker 05

Yeah, he's a, but he'll write on his thing, if it was like a good run, a hard run or whatever, user describes it. And if he goes on his own, cause nobody was out that day, be like, Billy no mates.

• 27:50Yasi Salek?

  On Instagram, in the caption.

• 27:51Speaker 05

On top of it, yeah, or on, over the map sometimes, like, you know. Billy Nolte's run this tonight. It was a Billy Nolte's run tonight.

• 27:57Yasi Salek?

  Your dad's cool.

• 27:58Speaker 05

And he likes, he's got, I should probably ask him about this.

• 28:01Yasi Salek?

Cool geezer. Yeah, he probably has great words.

• 28:03Speaker 05

He's got some things that he says that I, like, well, let's have a normal conversation and if it's just me, it's fine. If I'm having this conversation and Amanda's listening, she's like, what does that mean? Like certain things like that she still hasn't worked out.

• 28:15Yasi Salek?

  Also, our kid.

• 28:16Speaker 05

  Our kid is good.

• 28:17Yasi Salek?

But you said you guys don't really say our kid anymore. You just say like.

• 28:21Speaker 05

Well, I do know people that do, but in my particular family, we didn't. But my mom would say our Matt and my brother would say our Matt if she's talking to somebody else about me.

• 28:31Yasi Salek?

The thing that's really crazy about this to me personally.

• 28:34Speaker 05

  It's very possessive. No.

• 28:36Yasi Salek?

No, it's lovely, but that it's like, it's so presumes people know who your brother is and like.

• 28:43Speaker 05

  Right.

• 28:43Yasi Salek?

When like, like to say our kid.

• 28:46Speaker 05

  Well, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 28:47Yasi Salek?

You know, and just like, like I, Sean Ryder's books.

• 28:50Speaker 05

  Yep.

• 28:51Yasi Salek?

They just say our kid over. He never says his brother's name one time.

• 28:54Speaker 05

And if you've got more than one, I suppose that gets confusing.

• 28:56Yasi Salek?

What if you have more than one brother? You can't say our kid, can you?

• 28:59Speaker 05

  One of my friends.

• 29:00Yasi Salek?

Noel Gallagher has more than one brother. What about the poor older brother? He's like, what about me? I'm not our kid.

• 29:05Speaker 05

Who was it? He used to say, one of my friends used to say, he had a younger brother and an older brother. So he'd say our big one.

• 29:10Yasi Salek?

  Our big one.

• 29:12Speaker 05

Big one was the big brother, our big one and our little one. So yeah, I suppose they do that as well. Our little and our big one. Cause our little one could be your kid too, though, if you've got like a new kid.

• 29:20Yasi Salek?

Yeah, it's a lot of room for confusion.

• 29:22Speaker 05

Yeah, you just have to know.

• 29:23Yasi Salek?

  I'm just kidding.

• 29:25Speaker 05

Just have to know who you're referring to.

• 29:27Yasi Salek?

Yeah, well, I guess it's a little bit of a village vibe, which is nice.

• 29:29Speaker 05

That's true. You don't take long to know everything about everything, everyone there.

• 29:33Yasi Salek?

  And the two.

• 29:34Speaker 05

  In the small towns.

• 29:35Yasi Salek?

You said miles. You've really lost your edge.

• 29:36Speaker 05

No, no, we do say miles. This is the thing that we.

• 29:39Yasi Salek?

  What are you talking about?

• 29:39Speaker 05

We have, we have miles and miles per hour.

• 29:41Yasi Salek?

I thought you were in the metric system.

• 29:43Speaker 05

Yeah, but we just, we had to adapt and we, we can do all. I'll do feet, yards, meters. Try me.

• 29:51Speaker 05

But we'll do, but like, but then as soon as you're in like France or something, they're doing kilometers as the speed limit.

• 29:56Yasi Salek?

Right. And then you're really confused.

• 29:57Speaker 05

They still say like, I'm running a five K, but I.

• 29:59Yasi Salek?

We say that here too, though.

• 30:00Speaker 05

But I can, and I know what that would be in miles when I, in my mind.

• 30:04Yasi Salek?

  Okay.

• 30:04Speaker 05

  When people say it.

• 30:05Yasi Salek?

Are you a naturalized US citizen?

• 30:07Speaker 05

I've got a green card. That's what that means, isn't it?

• 30:09Yasi Salek?

  No, I don't.

• 30:10Speaker 05

No, I ain't done the whole thing. I've got a green card. So I'm a permanent resident.

• 30:13Yasi Salek?

You're one foot in, one foot out.

• 30:14Speaker 05

Yeah, I can't vote, but I can suffer the consequences.

• 30:18Yasi Salek?

Sure. Perfect. Honestly, a perfect, a perfect way.

• 30:25Speaker 01

• 31:26Speaker 05

So, there's a word that people use in England. And it is to describe people, usually. The word would be mardy, but in our song, we say mardy bum. Like, you've been a mardy bum.

• 31:45Yasi Salek?

  Shitty ass.

• 31:48Speaker 05

  Yeah, but if...

• 31:49Yasi Salek?

  But like, kind of, right?

• 31:50Speaker 05

If you didn't have the bum on it, though. If it was just, you've been mardy.

• 31:54Yasi Salek?

It's more that you're being shitty, but like, you're being like, fighty, right? Like, you're being antagonistic?

• 32:01Speaker 05

Well, the only way I've managed to sort of translate it is by having a kid and seeing what it's described as when she acts a certain way by Americans.

• 32:11Yasi Salek?

  Like, you're being bratty?

• 32:13Speaker 05

You're pouting a bit, though, as well. You're like, sulking, pouting, grumpy. Like, it only matters if someone's been mardy if you care about them, I think. Or if it's a... It's not like, they're not doing anything to you, they're just being miserable.

• 32:24Yasi Salek?

But can't you be in a mard?

• 32:25Speaker 05

Yeah, people say that, yeah. You're in a mard.

• 32:27Yasi Salek?

  That's like a fight, right?

• 32:28Speaker 05

Yeah, yeah, yeah. But a mardy bum would just be like, the way that, like, parents say about kids.

• 32:33Yasi Salek?

Yeah, this is what you're saying.

• 32:34Speaker 05

Nothing to do with the cleanliness of the rear end. Just you being Marty. It's like you've been like miserable, grumpy, like.

• 32:41Yasi Salek?

  Right.

• 32:42Speaker 05

Like and it and usually it's like it feels like for no reason. Yeah, you've been.

• 32:45Yasi Salek?

  But Marty.

• 32:46Speaker 05

Like cheer up. And then another very Sheffield thing that that reminded me of, it's nothing to do with that in terms of the meaning, so don't throw off, is a word we say in Sheffield is nesh.

• 32:56Yasi Salek?

  Nesh.

• 32:56Speaker 05

  Yeah, which you won't know.

• 32:58Yasi Salek?

It's not in a pop song somewhere. It might be.

• 33:01Speaker 05

No, but you would know it if I said it so well.

• 33:03Yasi Salek?

Sure, because he's from, as you guys know.

• 33:05Speaker 05

  But it's very.

• 33:06Yasi Salek?

  Jarvis Cocker.

• 33:06Speaker 05

Sheffield, very local. And that means you get cold easily, like.

• 33:11Yasi Salek?

  I'm nesh.

• 33:12Speaker 05

Yeah, you're nesh. You're probably nesh.

• 33:14Yasi Salek?

  I'm a nesh geezer.

• 33:15Speaker 05

  People I know are nesh.

• 33:16Yasi Salek?

I actually do. I identify as a lad, so.

• 33:19Speaker 05

Oh, you're a nesh lad. So it's like.

• 33:20Yasi Salek?

  I'm kind of laddie.

• 33:21Speaker 05

Like if you complain, yeah. If you, um, if you like complain that it's cold and it's not really that cold, it's like.

• 33:28Yasi Salek?

  Oh, my god, this.

• 33:29Speaker 05

It's not the complaining part. You actually genuinely are cold.

• 33:32Yasi Salek?

I've never felt more seen. I can't believe we don't have this word here. This is literally me.

• 33:36Speaker 05

It's like, and you could be like, don't be nesh.

• 33:38Yasi Salek?

  I have a low body.

• 33:39Speaker 05

  It's not that bad.

• 33:39Yasi Salek?

How can you not be nesh, babe? That's who I am.

• 33:41Speaker 05

  I know, I know.

• 33:42Yasi Salek?

You can't tell, you can't tell a leopard to change its spots.

• 33:46Speaker 05

No. I had a friend at school who won't, this has nothing to do with colloquialisms, but, but it was at Barnsley College where I went briefly. And he, uh, told his parents that he, he like just stopped going, but didn't tell his parents. And used to just come like we were going on the bus every day to go to Barnsley and just wait for the pub to open and stay there all day and then come back on the bus.

• 34:07Yasi Salek?

He didn't need like a signed note?

• 34:09Speaker 05

No, because at that point, because we leave school when we're sixteen.

• 34:11Yasi Salek?

  Oh, right, not anymore.

• 34:12Speaker 05

  That's your first mistake.

• 34:12Yasi Salek?

They're not allowed anymore, but yeah.

• 34:14Speaker 05

  I don't know.

• 34:14Yasi Salek?

I, against my will, I've learned about the British school system.

• 34:17Speaker 05

Education, yeah, probably should have. But then I won't be here now. So, you know, I would, wouldn't have started a band probably because I've been like, and I've been going to school a night.

• 34:25Yasi Salek?

So you don't have any O levels?

• 34:27Speaker 05

No, I did it. I did, I did A level, A levels is what I did.

• 34:30Yasi Salek?

  Okay.

• 34:31Speaker 05

I didn't do very well, but I did them.

• 34:33Yasi Salek?

  Which ones did you do?

• 34:34Speaker 05

  Music, technology.

• 34:36Speaker 05

We started engineering side because I didn't play an instrument yet, so they won't let me do music. Media studies.

• 34:41Yasi Salek?

  Sure.

• 34:42Speaker 05

  Which was.

• 34:43Yasi Salek?

  That served you well.

• 34:43Speaker 05

The best grade I got was like analyzing Fast and Furious.

• 34:47Yasi Salek?

  The film.

• 34:47Speaker 05

A certain scene in Fast and Furious, yeah.

• 34:49Yasi Salek?

  Amazing.

• 34:50Speaker 05

Um, don't know why they gave us that. And then photography and I failed that, but I've learned a lot more since.

• 34:55Yasi Salek?

You seem like you've come a long way.

• 34:56Speaker 05

Uh, yeah, they weren't interested in natural talent. They wanted like me to show up and like hand in work and stuff.

• 35:02Yasi Salek?

Do you ever go back and just be like?

• 35:03Speaker 05

I went back when our first single came out to play, to see the music teacher.

• 35:07Yasi Salek?

To be like, suck it bitch. You guys didn't say that though, but whatever your.

• 35:10Speaker 05

No, but then, but he definitely, but he said that it um wasn't mixed right. Even then, he was like, I heard it on the radio, the backing vocals were a bit loud.

• 35:17Yasi Salek?

  I actually really respect that.

• 35:19Speaker 05

Oh, you'd have a Larry Giza, like a Larry Giza would be something.

• 35:22Yasi Salek?

  Like a homebody?

• 35:23Speaker 05

No, Larry would be, usually it's around like fighting, like you're the, you're like instigate a fight. Like you got a bit Larry, like you'd be talking about someone in the pub or whatever. It's like, I got a bit Larry.

• 35:40Yasi Salek?

You must say that all the time.

• 35:41Speaker 05

Yeah, I've been around a lot of flair.

• 35:44Yasi Salek?

Just saying, if you're, if you're at the pub at eleven AM on a Tuesday, as they, people do.

• 35:48Speaker 05

  Can be.

• 35:49Yasi Salek?

Okay, well, I want you to do one thing to wrap this up. I want you to give me a couple of scenarios.

• 35:55Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 35:55Yasi Salek?

And then see if I can guess the proper way to describe a person or a thing that's happening. Do you know what I mean?

• 36:01Speaker 05

So I'll give you in like, without using any of the words.

• 36:03Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 36:04Speaker 05

And you say how you would say it. Okay.

• 36:07Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 36:07Speaker 05

Um, okay, so I'm gonna say that we, we'd like, we went out for a drink.

• 36:11Yasi Salek?

  Okay.

• 36:12Speaker 05

  To the pub last night.

• 36:14Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 36:14Speaker 05

You know, a fight broke out.

• 36:16Yasi Salek?

  Okay.

• 36:17Speaker 05

Because a certain person was just being problematic.

• 36:20Yasi Salek?

  Okay.

• 36:21Speaker 05

Um, and he was, and he, and he was, you know, over served.

• 36:26Yasi Salek?

  Okay.

• 36:26Speaker 05

  Because he was over served.

• 36:28Yasi Salek?

  Right.

• 36:29Speaker 05

And by the way, there were plenty of attractive girls there too.

• 36:31Yasi Salek?

Wow, you're you're using all the words here.

• 36:34Speaker 05

  I'm just going from memory.

• 36:34Yasi Salek?

Okay, by the way, there was plenty of attractive girls there too.

• 36:37Speaker 05

You can split that into two if you need to, because I'm just like trying to remember everything.

• 36:41Yasi Salek?

So the the the bloke was being Larry because he was so bladdered and there were a lot of fit, tidy birds there.

• 36:49Speaker 05

Yeah, that's what I was getting at, yeah. That's how you would say it.

• 36:53Yasi Salek?

Nice job, Yossi. Fucking killing it. Ace, right? Yeah.

• 36:57Speaker 05

Ace, oh, ace, yeah, people say that as well, don't they?

• 36:59Yasi Salek?

  Top.

• 37:00Speaker 05

  Top.

• 37:01Yasi Salek?

  That's me.

• 37:01Speaker 05

Um, top notch. You said top notch in America, though, didn't you?

• 37:04Yasi Salek?

Sure, it's really universal, I guess.

• 37:06Speaker 05

Okay, that's another one where, so you were walking through the park, for example, and a group of kids wearing tracksuits approached you. And

• 37:21Speaker 05

that's as far as that one goes, I suppose. They robbed you. And you were, oh, this is a word we haven't used, but you'll probably do it anyway. And you were devastated by this. So that'll be a bonus word at the end.

• 37:31Yasi Salek?

Okay, I'm walking in the park, a mob of, wait, a lot, that lot of lads.

• 37:40Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 37:41Yasi Salek?

  Or chavs.

• 37:42Speaker 05

Yeah, I was going for chavs.

• 37:42Yasi Salek?

Came up on me. Are they nuts?

• 37:47Speaker 05

Oh shit, okay, yes, so these chavs.

• 37:49Yasi Salek?

  They blagged me.

• 37:49Speaker 05

These chavs were under the influence of god knows what. I don't think they were bladdered.

• 37:54Yasi Salek?

They were, they were off their head.

• 37:56Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 37:57Yasi Salek?

  And they blagged my purse.

• 38:00Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 38:01Yasi Salek?

We didn't even do that one, that was a bonus one for me. And then I was devastated.

• 38:05Speaker 05

Yeah, I was looking for something else with devastated.

• 38:07Yasi Salek?

No, I'm just, I was just trying to remember what you said.

• 38:08Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 38:09Yasi Salek?

  I was right, sorry.

• 38:13Yasi Salek?

  In it.

• 38:13Speaker 05

I was going for, um, yeah, as long as it's in it on the head.

• 38:16Yasi Salek?

I was, Alex, I was looking for.

• 38:19Speaker 05

What we're looking for was gutted.

• 38:21Yasi Salek?

Oh, it was gutted, it was proper gutted.

• 38:22Speaker 05

  Proper gutted.

• 38:23Yasi Salek?

Because they took all my quid that was in my purse. They blagged all my quid that was in my purse.

• 38:27Speaker 05

That's when, that's what's funny too, you want to say all my quid, but you're right in thinking you should.

• 38:30Yasi Salek?

  You wouldn't?

• 38:31Speaker 05

  No, all my quid.

• 38:32Yasi Salek?

They just, they took my, they took my.

• 38:34Speaker 05

You'd have to be specific, they took like twenty quid.

• 38:36Yasi Salek?

  My bag of sand.

• 38:37Speaker 05

  They took about.

• 38:38Yasi Salek?

I'm doing really well, you guys just see. I'm, I'm not tight because I'm doing really well.

• 38:42Speaker 05

  That was good.

• 38:43Yasi Salek?

And I lost a bag of sand.

• 38:44Speaker 05

  Grounded your bag.

• 38:45Yasi Salek?

Yeah, that's right. And that's why the chavs targeted me.

• 38:50Yasi Salek?

And I was, I was bothered.

• 38:52Speaker 05

  Proper gut, I'd buy that.

• 38:53Yasi Salek?

  Actually, I wasn't bothered because I'm so.

• 38:56Speaker 05

That, you know, that money's coming back. You know, that money's coming back.

• 38:58Yasi Salek?

Yeah, cuz I manifested in the mirror with my affirmations. I wonder if I start doing my affirmations with the slang involved. Yeah, it'll bring my British husband.

• 39:09Speaker 05

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, maybe you've got like.

• 39:11Yasi Salek?

  That daft geezer.

• 39:12Speaker 05

You gotta do more specific manifestations, yeah.

• 39:15Yasi Salek?

  How do you say rich?

• 39:16Speaker 05

  I think just loaded.

• 39:17Yasi Salek?

  Loaded.

• 39:18Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 39:19Yasi Salek?

  Okay.

• 39:19Speaker 05

I did learn where posh comes from as well recently.

• 39:22Yasi Salek?

  Where does it come from?

• 39:24Speaker 05

It's to do with like people going on boats and it was about the view that you had if you were rich.

• 39:29Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 39:29Speaker 05

So it'd be like portside out starboard home. So like when you're going out, you get to look at the one side. And then when you're coming back, you get to look at, like you get to look at the best view.

• 39:37Yasi Salek?

But how does portside out translate to posh?

• 39:40Speaker 05

P O S A, like portside out, it's like a, whatever that word is acronym or.

• 39:43Yasi Salek?

Yeah, I was gonna say anagram, which is totally wrong. No, acronym is correct. Oh, I didn't know that.

• 39:49Speaker 05

  I know, I didn't for a long time.

• 39:50Yasi Salek?

  Wow.

• 39:51Speaker 05

Don't know if posh spice knows that either.

• 39:52Yasi Salek?

  Posh who?

• 39:53Speaker 05

  Posh spice.

• 39:54Yasi Salek?

  Oh, right. She's moved on.

• 39:55Speaker 05

Yeah, she's, I mean, she became, you know, she probably can go on a boat and look at whichever view she wants.

• 40:00Yasi Salek?

  I think so, yeah.

• 40:01Speaker 05

  It's nice.

• 40:02Yasi Salek?

Okay, well, I feel we've, I feel like we've done good work here.

• 40:06Speaker 05

Yeah, I'm sure more are gonna come up on my way home and it'll be too late, but you know.

• 40:09Yasi Salek?

I think we covered a lot of ground. We'll do another Duolingo session just privately where you teach me new words.

• 40:16Speaker 05

Yeah, you might just need to learn them anyway. That could be like a, yeah, off camera.

• 40:19Yasi Salek?

Yeah, how am I gonna, how am I gonna hang with my husband and have a bread cake burger?

• 40:24Speaker 05

Bacon butter, or a chip butter, that's when you have like just fry, like fries and a sandwich.

• 40:30Yasi Salek?

Yeah, that feels a bit on the dole. Feels a bit on the dole.

• 40:33Speaker 05

Yeah, you usually eat that if you're the dole.

• 40:38Yasi Salek?

Okay, well, Matt Helders, thank you for joining me.

• 40:41Speaker 05
