Brad Pitt

Brad Pitt (F1 The Movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Fight Club) is an Academy Award-winning actor and producer. Brad joins the Armchair Expert to discuss whether it makes him nervous to talk to Dax in public, holding two realities about people he knows that are famous actors, and leaving school one week shy of completing his degree for Hollywood. Brad and Dax talk about getting shut down trying to get his SAG card, still feeling like the kid from Oklahoma learning his way through this whole thing, and why his favorite humor is the most irreverent kind. Brad explains that there’s no bummer about being in a Tarantino movie, having to work up a case for insurance that it’s actually safer to drive at higher speeds while filming F1 The Movie, and the visceral high of delivering lines at 180 miles per hour. • 0:00Dax Shepard?

Welcome, welcome, welcome to Armchair Expert. I'm Dan Shepard and I'm joined by Mrs. Mouse.

• 0:06Speaker 01

  Hi there.

• 0:06Dax Shepard?

  The mightiest of the meese.

• 0:08Speaker 01

  I'm here. I'm mighty. Wow.

• 0:12Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I have to imagine many people have guessed about this episode because we've obviously been so excited for a while now.

• 0:19Speaker 01

  We have.

• 0:19Dax Shepard?

Knowing and so excited that I was like, even though he said yes, I just feel like there'll be something will happen.

• 0:27Speaker 01

  I know. I'm still scared.

• 0:29Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I am too. Until it's been out for like even two weeks, maybe. But yeah, the number one from when I sat down, the notion of interviewing this person was absolutely implausible.

• 0:41Speaker 01

  Hilarious.

• 0:42Dax Shepard?

It was a joke. It was a funny joke.

• 0:44Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 0:44Dax Shepard?

But then Monty got Matt Damon and that maybe cracked a little ray of hope.

• 0:49Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 0:50Dax Shepard?

  Dreams do come true.

• 0:51Speaker 01

  Dreams come true.

• 0:53Dax Shepard?

Without further ado, my dream boyfriend, Brad Pitt.

• 0:56Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 0:57Dax Shepard?

An Academy Award winning actor, a producer, Fight Club 7. I feel embarrassed even listing these, Mr. And Mrs. Smith, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Glorious Bastards. And the new most kickass movie of the summer, I'm going to declare it's the most kickass movie of the whole summer and maybe the decade. F1, hair raising, fucking a point of view you've never gotten. This is as close as you can get to what it feels like to be in a race car.

• 1:22Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:22Dax Shepard?

It's incredible. And he's fucking perfect.

• 1:25Speaker 01

  He's perfect.

• 1:26Dax Shepard?

  God, we love him.

• 1:27Speaker 01

We really do. And he, I mean, as you'll hear, he's just such a delight, so kind, gave us so much of his time.

• 1:34Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Charmed the fuck out of us, really. Yeah. Well, get your spare.

• 1:40Speaker 01

  Nope.

• 1:43Speaker 01

  Don't say it.

• 1:45Dax Shepard?

Please enjoy Brad Pitt. We get support from Quince.

• 1:51Speaker 01

Okay, can we talk about the fact that the holidays are already here? It's crazy. I feel like I blinked and now we're in gifting season, which I'm not really mad about because I do love giving gifts. And Quince is making it so easy to find something great for everyone on my list, including myself, because let's be honest, self-gifting is a love language.

• 2:10Dax Shepard?

Quince is seriously the gift that keeps on giving. Their high-quality staples are made with premium materials like 100% Mongolian cashmere, 14-karat gold, and Italian leather. Full-on luxury quality at prices that won't wreck your holiday budget.

• 2:26Speaker 01

It's the dream. The cashmere sweater, starting at $60, down jackets, wool outerwear, cashmere accessories. You and everyone on your list are staying cozy and looking incredible all season long.

• 2:37Dax Shepard?

Well, I'm gonna tell you this, it just got chilly for the first time this year in California, and I'm so excited, and I'm wearing my Quince cashmere right now.

• 2:44Speaker 01

  It's great!

• 2:45Dax Shepard?

Yeah, and I am going to gift this to some of my friends. I hope they're not listening.

• 2:49Speaker 01

Quince is also more than clothing. They've got fine jewelry for your significant other, leather bags for your bestie, hotel-quality bedding to set up your guest rooms, chef-grade cookware. That's an amazing thing they offer here, and it's such a good gift because people don't like buying cookware for themselves, but it's very important. And they also have five-star luggage, another good gift that people don't like buying for themselves.

• 5:14Speaker 01

Hi, so nice to meet you.

• 5:16Dax Shepard?

You too, sorry I got ice and.

• 5:17Speaker 01

No, you're good. What'd you get?

• 5:19Dax Shepard?

I tried this new thing here. It's a blueberry latte.

• 5:23Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 5:24Dax Shepard?

  I'll absolutely take a sip.

• 5:26Speaker 01

  Thank you for offering.

• 5:28Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yes.

• 5:29Speaker 01

  Is it nice?

• 5:30Dax Shepard?

Blueberry is my favorite fake flavor.

• 5:32Speaker 03

  You want in there?

• 5:33Dax Shepard?

  Take a little rip?

• 5:34Speaker 03

  Not really, but.

• 5:34Speaker 01

  No, I will. I will.

• 5:37Dax Shepard?

I've put two nicotine products next to you in case you are wanting.

• 5:41Speaker 03

  No, I'm done.

• 5:41Speaker 01

  Good for you.

• 5:43Speaker 03

  Couple of years now.

• 5:44Dax Shepard?

  Zero nicotine.

• 5:45Speaker 03

  None.

• 5:45Dax Shepard?

Why? Think 30 years of smoking, I've just figured I've had enough.

• 5:49Speaker 01

  Good for you.

• 5:50Dax Shepard?

I've had enough. But nicotine is really good for your brain, is it?

• 5:55Speaker 01

That's what he wants to say.

• 5:57Speaker 03

  In reserves.

• 5:59Dax Shepard?

You don't need any pick me ups.

• 6:00Speaker 03

Now, is there any problem with advertisement?

• 6:02Speaker 01

No. You can do whatever you want.

• 6:04Speaker 03

  We can advertise for.

• 6:04Dax Shepard?

Those aren't sponsors. Those are just what we thought you might like.

• 6:08Speaker 01

We threw a lot of beverages at you.

• 6:09Dax Shepard?

But we're gonna ask you to hold the filet of fish at one point and say, god damn, this is good. You don't have to say McDonald's.

• 6:16Speaker 03

I have no idea what this means, but.

• 6:18Dax Shepard?

I'm doing a fucking ad for.

• 6:20Speaker 03

  You are looking.

• 6:21Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 6:21Speaker 03

  Supporting.

• 6:22Dax Shepard?

  Is that?

• 6:23Speaker 03

  Sure.

• 6:24Dax Shepard?

Wow. Is that a waffle? What is that? What do we call that?

• 6:27Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 6:28Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Yeah, it looks fucking great.

• 6:30Speaker 01

  The blue's really nice.

• 6:31Dax Shepard?

Okay, not only is this God's True Cashmere, I'm pretty sure this is the one you gifted me. I've got a few now. I was like, I think that's the one he sent.

• 6:39Speaker 03

You know what I think he's doing? I think he's kinda like pining for another.

• 6:43Dax Shepard?

  Oh, there's no question.

• 6:43Speaker 03

I think he's like trolling a little bit.

• 6:46Speaker 01

I'm not gonna rule out that I don't want one.

• 6:49Dax Shepard?

  She has some true.

• 6:50Speaker 01

I do. I have some shorts.

• 6:52Speaker 03

  Shorts are fun.

• 6:52Speaker 01

They're so cute. The green and white.

• 6:54Speaker 03

  Would you do a hoodie?

• 6:55Speaker 01

  I would do a hoodie.

• 6:56Speaker 03

Even with long hair? Cause sometimes women with long hair, they don't like the hoodie.

• 6:59Dax Shepard?

You cut your hair off, right, for a free hoodie?

• 7:01Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 7:02Dax Shepard?

  Okay, great, great.

• 7:03Speaker 01

  For God's True?

• 7:05Speaker 03

  Or a blanket?

• 7:05Speaker 01

  You guys do blankets?

• 7:06Speaker 03

Oh, yeah, we do cushy blankets.

• 7:08Speaker 01

  Ah, that sounds nice.

• 7:09Dax Shepard?

How did we come up with the name God's True Cashmere?

• 7:12Speaker 03

My dear friend, who is originally a holistic nurse, that I met around the time we met.

• 7:18Dax Shepard?

  In your age of discovery?

• 7:19Speaker 03

In my age of discovery. And I came in one day and she said, I had a dream about you. You said, I want more green in my life. And I literally said that to someone the day before, just out of whim, I want more green in my life. And so she made me a green shirt, this, super soft, super cash. Her name is Sat Hedy. It means God's truth.

• 7:40Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 7:41Speaker 03

And she goes, what do you think of this? We started making them and we really liked them. Then we started making them for our friends and we thought, all right, let's make a little side hustle and have some fun with it. It's been a lot of fun.

• 7:50Speaker 01

  So fun.

• 7:51Speaker 03

But yeah, so she said, what do you think of God's True Cashmere? I went, it's bold.

• 7:57Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's memorable.

• 7:59Speaker 03

  It sticks out.

• 8:00Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 8:00Speaker 03

Can't find a reason not to.

• 8:01Dax Shepard?

Might get a. Certain segment of the country mad, but hey, let's roll with it.

• 8:05Speaker 03

Well, I mean, everyone's got their own definition, right?

• 8:07Speaker 01

Well, everyone thinks it's you that you're God and it's your true cash.

• 8:12Dax Shepard?

What would be the very worst?

• 8:14Speaker 01

I think people might think that I thought it.

• 8:17Dax Shepard?

  No.

• 8:18Speaker 01

In a good way, in a good, oh no, I've really stepped in it already. I gotta go.

• 8:24Speaker 03

Yeah, Pitt, he's known for his ego.

• 8:27Speaker 01

  No, you are not.

• 8:28Dax Shepard?

  Okay, so on that topic.

• 8:31Speaker 03

I like that there's no entry to this.

• 8:33Speaker 01

  No, we get right in.

• 8:34Dax Shepard?

Don't you like that? Cause don't you think when you're acting, action is almost, and there have been famous directors who don't say action.

• 8:41Speaker 03

I asked on the last one not to.

• 8:42Dax Shepard?

Okay. Yeah. Cause all of a sudden it's like, be great now.

• 8:45Speaker 03

  Yes, go.

• 8:45Speaker 01

  Jarring.

• 8:46Dax Shepard?

As opposed to like, we're talking, we're hanging, given the way you and I met, does it make you nervous?

• 8:52Speaker 01

  Of course. Oh, he wishes.

• 8:54Dax Shepard?

  That's hopefully where it is.

• 8:57Speaker 03

You know, I've never had a gay experience. I kind of missed that window, but if I did.

• 9:01Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 9:02Speaker 03

  It wouldn't be you.

• 9:04Dax Shepard?

Oh man, you had me. I was like, wow, he's gonna say it.

• 9:06Speaker 01

I was like, Dax is going to die tonight.

• 9:10Dax Shepard?

I don't want to brag, but you're going to need to build up to me.

• 9:15Dax Shepard?

I do recommend you start with some starters.

• 9:22Dax Shepard?

Okay, back to the real thing. Given the context in which we met, which is like really heightened honesty and vulnerability. Does it make you nervous to have to talk with me in public?

• 9:33Speaker 03

No, not at all. Quite at ease.

• 9:34Dax Shepard?

  Oh, okay. Great.

• 9:35Speaker 03

We can say men's group, right?

• 9:36Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I say AA. You're not supposed to, but I say it.

• 9:39Speaker 03

I said that. I went on some New York Times interview and what an amazing thing this experience was for me. It was a men's group, it was AA, it was when I first was getting sober. I just thought it was just incredible. Men sharing their experiences, their foibles, their missteps, their wants, their aches and a lot of humor with it. I thought it was really special experience. Coming from the Ozarks where we're like, everything's great.

• 10:01Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 10:02Speaker 03

And so I do this interview and I say this, and I got admonished by someone of the higher up saying.

• 10:07Dax Shepard?

  You did.

• 10:07Speaker 03

  It's anonymous.

• 10:08Speaker 01

  How does that help anyone?

• 10:10Dax Shepard?

  Not for you.

• 10:11Speaker 03

  That's what I said.

• 10:11Dax Shepard?

Here's the truth. There was a period of time where if you were known to be an alcoholic, you would be run out of your neighborhood. You couldn't find employment. There was a great reason for it, but even deeper than that is they didn't want alcoholics just showing up at their doorstep. No one had a fucking solution and you would be kind of inviting just the town drunks to show up. So a lot of reasons. My excuse, because I say it openly and I've gotten some criticism is I've had a couple dozen, maybe more people come up to me in the last seven years and go like, I'm the best man at my brother's wedding and my family wouldn't talk to me. And I found out about AA from you and I'm like, I'll take that dude over 1,000 fucking haters.

• 10:46Speaker 03

I've had a few of those as well, but you go around in a circle. It's kind of spiral because it's a really crowded room. Dax was usually near the end because he's been there a while. He's kind of like a

• 10:54Speaker 01

  Elder statesman.

• 10:54Speaker 03

Elder statesman. Thank you. And I really respected it. Was really open, honest, was a way to take whatever theme seemed to go in the evening and then put it in the funniest package and it meant a lot to me. Really did.

• 11:06Speaker 01

  Good job, Dak.

• 11:07Speaker 03

  Haven't talked to him since.

• 11:08Speaker 01

  Yeah, understandably.

• 11:10Dax Shepard?

It's so impactful that I have not seen him since.

• 11:11Speaker 01

You use him for what he's worth and then you walk away. That's what we do.

• 11:15Dax Shepard?

Send him a couple of the free products every now and then.

• 11:18Speaker 03

Did he tell you about our date?

• 11:19Speaker 01

He did, but we keep you on the DL a little bit on this show.

• 11:23Dax Shepard?

Yeah. And this is really kind of this fun theme and I often tell people this and I wonder if you can relate to this. Surely you've worked with people where you're holding two things simultaneously about them. Like if you were to have worked with Paul Newman, I imagine you have Paul Newman and then you would have a man you know. I think it's okay to keep both those things alive.

• 11:43Speaker 03

  Yeah, I think that's fair.

• 11:44Dax Shepard?

I have a handful of friends. Robert Downey Jr. I saw him as a kid in Weird Science and him dumping the fucking malt off the top of the mall. He's not even a main player in that movie. We had a rad cardigan on.

• 11:57Speaker 03

And like a zoot suit or something.

• 11:59Dax Shepard?

Yeah, he was wild. And I'm like, that dude's awesome. I love that dude. Followed him throughout the years, ultimately became friends with him. And it's like, yeah, I have Robert, the dude I know. And then there's the guy I just was in love with from Chaplin and all these things. They don't intersect, right?

• 12:13Speaker 03

Yeah, they don't intertwine that way.

• 12:14Dax Shepard?

Did you have anyone like that?

• 12:15Speaker 03

You've said it. I remember meeting Newman, working with Redford, working with Hackman. You know what I have that with? Sean Penn.

• 12:21Speaker 01

  There you go.

• 12:23Speaker 03

  Eighty-nine, Sean Penn.

• 12:24Dax Shepard?

  Oh, fuck, yes.

• 12:26Speaker 03

  He'd be number one.

• 12:26Dax Shepard?

Oh, my God. How about Racing with the Moon?

• 12:29Speaker 03

  How about At Close Range?

• 12:31Dax Shepard?

Oh, my God, he was fucking.

• 12:32Speaker 03

  Know this one?

• 12:32Speaker 01

  I haven't seen that.

• 12:33Speaker 03

  Rush Home.

• 12:34Speaker 01

  OK, I will.

• 12:35Dax Shepard?

He's in it with his brother.

• 12:36Speaker 03

  Christopher Walken, yep, Chris.

• 12:38Dax Shepard?

And he got fucking huge for it. Remember when you were younger, like, oh, shit, Sean Penn's fucking huge.

• 12:43Speaker 03

  Yeah, he's badass.

• 12:44Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, he's a bad motherfucker.

• 12:45Speaker 03

But he super stylized the way it shot. Jamie Foley directed it. But I think younger actors should study it because so much is said without saying it. It's such a streamlined script and everything is undercurrent.

• 12:57Dax Shepard?

  The movie's pretty quiet.

• 12:58Speaker 03

  Yeah, it's great.

• 12:59Dax Shepard?

OK, we share another one while we're on this road. Mickey Rourke.

• 13:03Speaker 03

  We do.

• 13:04Dax Shepard?

  Whoa.

• 13:04Speaker 03

  Love that Mickey Rourke.

• 13:05Dax Shepard?

Where does it start for you?

• 13:07Speaker 03

I started really looking at acting. It was late eighties. And so at that point, Mickey Rourke.

• 13:12Dax Shepard?

  Wow.

• 13:12Speaker 03

He had this Bogart roughness to him. Super tough, but also this really vulnerable. He could walk both lines. He was doing something that was so extraordinary. She watched Angel Heart.

• 13:23Dax Shepard?

And Lisa Bonet in Angel Heart?

• 13:25Speaker 03

  That's incredible.

• 13:25Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 13:26Speaker 03

  Just incredible.

• 13:27Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's your number one.

• 13:29Dax Shepard?

When I was a kid, I'm like, I'm naming my daughter if I have one epiphany.

• 13:32Speaker 03

  Lisa Bonet.

• 13:32Dax Shepard?

Oh, epiphany, yes. Lisa Bonet. Her first name is Lisa Bonet.

• 13:38Speaker 03

He's got great vulnerability. That's the deal. To be able to walk with that kind of strength and toughness.

• 13:43Dax Shepard?

And he was sexy, which dudes weren't really sexy then.

• 13:45Speaker 03

  Grandes Village?

• 13:46Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 13:47Speaker 03

What a stunted movie. So eighties. He still is timeless. He is so badass in it. I'm the Pope.

• 13:53Speaker 01

  Oh, wow.

• 13:53Speaker 03

They took my fingers, Johnny. Yeah, it's great. Took my fucking thumb, Charlie. Chaluts.

• 14:00Dax Shepard?

OK, go. Back to that situation. Which? Meeting you in that context. You're at this meeting. We're gonna get into the fact that a bazillion famous people have come to this meeting and everyone's used to it. And then you came and it was pretty overwhelming. And I got a real sense of what your experience is in this way that I couldn't really fathom. But you have the power of when you are in a place. Everyone can't stop thinking about you. And I was like, God, he has to be aware of that. What does that feel like? That's a lot to deal with. How is he ever going to open up and be honest in this space? And then it dissipates a bit. People get a little more comfortable. And then you were, you were so fucking honest. And I was like, he must have a stubbornness like I have, which is like, yeah, all this is going on,

• 14:43Dax Shepard?

but I refuse to let it, not let me be a person.

• 14:46Speaker 03

Oh, it's interesting. Never thought about it that way. You know, I was pretty much on my knees and I was really open. I was trying anything and everyone, anything anyone threw at me. It was a difficult time. I need rebooting. I needed to wake the fuck up in some areas and it just meant a lot to me. So, yeah, the first is, oh my God, it's coming around. You know, it's coming around, it's getting closer, it's going to be yours. But everyone was so open. It gives you permission in a way to go, okay, I'm going to step out on this edge and see what happens. And then I really grew to love it.

• 15:17Dax Shepard?

When another dude shares so honestly about his struggles and his defects, and it gets to you, you feel like you owe him that honesty in return.

• 15:26Speaker 03

Anything could go because some guys would be like, you know what? Didn't have such a bad week and talk about their wins, little failures and little successes. And you know what? I woke up and I'm going to do it again tomorrow. So that too, what do you think? Is there about 30 guys roughly?

• 15:40Dax Shepard?

Yeah, on a big, especially when you fucking showed up.

• 15:45Speaker 01

People are knocking at the door.

• 15:48Speaker 03

There's always one guy though, just loves to hear himself talking and just go.

• 15:52Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's tough.

• 15:54Speaker 03

And you wait till you get through the next one. It's actually not tough. It's pretty funny.

• 15:57Speaker 01

Well, Dax had in a fight with someone over at once, didn't he?

• 15:59Dax Shepard?

They get in a fight in that room.

• 16:01Speaker 03

Oh, really? I missed that week.

• 16:02Dax Shepard?

We told the story on the podcast, so I don't mind saying it out loud again, but the actor Eric Dane, who I now fucking love.

• 16:07Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 16:08Dax Shepard?

I have such a sweetness for him.

• 16:09Speaker 03

Yeah, we all had a mini group over there.

• 16:12Dax Shepard?

Right, right, right. He was hosting. But when we first were around each other was not good. And then he threatened a dude in the meeting.

• 16:18Speaker 03

  Wow.

• 16:19Dax Shepard?

And I said, let's go motherfucker. In the middle of the meeting, he goes, if you hit that timer again, I'm gonna fucking throw you in that candle.

• 16:25Speaker 03

That was right at the time.

• 16:27Dax Shepard?

And I go, that's it, motherfucker, let's go. Stand up, let's go outside. He stands, go outside and I'm gonna beat the fuck out of him in Tom's driveway.

• 16:36Speaker 01

  At an AAV.

• 16:37Dax Shepard?

We're coming for healing and understanding. But what's great is we're friends now and we told that story on the podcast and it's quite a hilarious beginning for us. Cause now I love him. But anyways, I set all that up just to say, I felt very compassionate to what you go through and I never sweated you. I wasn't like coming up to you, hey man, I'm Dax, nice to meet you. So I didn't really interact a ton with you.

• 16:56Speaker 03

  We had met before that.

• 16:57Dax Shepard?

We'll save that to the end.

• 16:58Speaker 03

I think, okay. It didn't leave a mark, but I'm pretty sure we did.

• 17:01Dax Shepard?

  Okay, listen.

• 17:03Speaker 01

I think it would have left a mark.

• 17:04Dax Shepard?

So I didn't sweat you much. I do want everyone in the world to know, you're insanely gracious. You learned everyone's name, you engage with people. I thought you were particularly good at assessing who was kinda low status and you seemed to really be kind to those people.

• 17:16Speaker 03

It was really moving. Some of these men were so moving.

• 17:19Dax Shepard?

And then you come up to me at the end and you go, hey, are you going to this track day next week? And I go, yeah, I am. And then I go, oh, right, we both know Duffy. This must be how you know I'm going to that track day.

• 17:29Speaker 03

  Track day, motos.

• 17:30Speaker 01

  Vehicles.

• 17:31Dax Shepard?

  Motorcycles on the track.

• 17:32Speaker 01

  I know about vehicles.

• 17:33Speaker 03

  Two wheels.

• 17:34Dax Shepard?

  She's been on some vehicles.

• 17:35Speaker 01

I have been on a couple.

• 17:36Dax Shepard?

And you go, hey, you wanna ride up on a helicopter with me? And I go, absolutely.

• 17:41Speaker 01

Who's gonna say no to that?

• 17:44Dax Shepard?

Of course I will. What should I wear?

• 17:46Speaker 01

  Bachelor, bachelor style day.

• 17:48Dax Shepard?

Do you have a favorite color you want me to dress in? So you invited me and I was like, oh, this is incredible. I wasn't even sure if he knew I was in this room. And then we went on this glorious helicopter ride. For me, it was very romantic.

• 18:00Speaker 01

And were you like giving a tour?

• 18:02Speaker 03

  Just slowly.

• 18:03Speaker 01

Yeah, slowly get that hand around.

• 18:06Speaker 03

Three hour drive up there, something like that, isn't it?

• 18:07Dax Shepard?

  Went to a beat down.

• 18:08Speaker 03

Yeah, so to get up early and work time on the track. It was just one of those rock and roll things you get to do every now and then.

• 18:14Dax Shepard?

You said, you wanna go? I was like, yeah, I'm not sure how I'm gonna get in my bike there. I'm saying yeah. Someone else's.

• 18:20Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 18:21Speaker 03

Let it be known, Dax is rapid. He's fast.

• 18:24Speaker 01

You brought him here to give you so many compliments.

• 18:27Dax Shepard?

  Let the record also reflect.

• 18:28Speaker 03

  He is, he is.

• 18:29Dax Shepard?

  Brad's very fast.

• 18:29Speaker 03

  Fast too.

• 18:30Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 18:31Speaker 03

No, not that much on two wheels. I wasn't as quick as these guys or Channing.

• 18:35Speaker 01

Well, he's been doing it all.

• 18:36Speaker 03

Channing was annoyingly good really quick.

• 18:38Dax Shepard?

  Really good.

• 18:38Speaker 03

And I'm like, yeah, he's one of these athletes that can kind of do every single. Like Lewis, we had Toto on and Toto was like, you know, Lewis is one of these guys who drives you crazy. He can do everything and just he tries it and he's immediately fast.

• 18:50Dax Shepard?

You just kind of got to do like a subdued Schwarzenegger.

• 18:52Speaker 01

It is. It's almost the same.

• 18:54Dax Shepard?

  And it's bang on.

• 18:54Speaker 03

If Schwarzenegger went to a four year college, you know.

• 18:59Speaker 01

I have a quick question about the meeting before we leave the meeting.

• 19:01Speaker 03

  Yeah, go.

• 19:02Speaker 01

When you first get there, when it's going around, are you thinking, are people going to talk about me specifically? Is there any nerves going into a meeting when you do have to be very vulnerable? And you know, people there might have an extra interest in my story?

• 19:17Speaker 03

So I've heard of stories where like Philip Seymour Hoffman went to one and someone videoed it and put it out.

• 19:22Speaker 01

  See, that's scary.

• 19:23Speaker 03

But I'd been assured by another friend, this was a safe place. Two, I am a stubborn fuck, but also when I've stepped in shit, I'm pretty good at taking responsibility for it and honing up to it. And now it's a quest to, you know, what do I do with this? How can I write this and make sure it doesn't happen again or just?

• 19:38Speaker 01

  Be better.

• 19:39Speaker 03

Yeah, be better, step up. So I was really open to that and I was really open to see what these guys were doing who had their thing and been there for a while. Sure, I was a bit shy. I can generally be a bit shy in any kind of situation first. But I just remember getting my arms around it pretty quickly and it became a thing for me. It was really something I'd look forward to.

• 19:56Dax Shepard?

Me too. That was very kind of special.

• 19:57Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 19:58Speaker 01

But it's hard, even me in therapy, who no one cares, but I'm like, should I tell?

• 20:04Dax Shepard?

  Particularly the therapist.

• 20:06Speaker 01

Could care less, but I'm like, should I tell her everything? What if she tells somebody something?

• 20:12Speaker 03

No, when I jumped into therapy then, I was just blah, blah, blah. And I did this and I did that and da, da, da and I did that.

• 20:17Speaker 01

  Good for you. That's trusting.

• 20:19Speaker 03

  Or.

• 20:20Speaker 01

  Stupid.

• 20:20Speaker 03

  Desperate.

• 20:22Speaker 01

  Well, desperate's a good reason.

• 20:23Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 20:24Dax Shepard?

Yeah, you don't come into AA because everything's working out fantastic.

• 20:28Speaker 03

No, that's usually not the entry point, is it?

• 20:29Dax Shepard?

  It's not the winner's club.

• 20:32Dax Shepard?

Your hair's gotta be on fire before you go like, yeah, I'll go hang with a bunch of dudes and talk about emotions.

• 20:37Speaker 01

  My feelings.

• 20:39Dax Shepard?

It's not the most appealing offering. I want to know about Missouri.

• 20:44Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 20:44Dax Shepard?

I think we've bonded over this before and you saying I want more green in my life is something that I constantly think of as like Lakes is in my DNA.

• 20:52Speaker 03

  You and me both.

• 20:53Dax Shepard?

Shocking. I hadn't read Huckleberry Finn or Tom Sawyer, any of that until maybe two months ago. I read both.

• 20:59Speaker 03

  Amazing.

• 21:00Dax Shepard?

And now I'm reading the Chernow biography on Mark.

• 21:04Speaker 03

  I just got it.

• 21:05Speaker 01

  Is it great?

• 21:06Dax Shepard?

It's awesome. How close were you to where he grew up?

• 21:08Speaker 03

It would have been the same. It's the Ozarks. I mean, it's a beautiful country, but it's also the Mason Dixon line. North and South fought there. It's birthplace of televangelism.

• 21:18Speaker 01

  Oh, wow.

• 21:19Speaker 03

But a lot of meth labs. There is this dichotomy that's always at play. And because it's this confluence of Midwestern and Southern, it all kind of flattens out there in a way. You know, our accents are kind of more like this. We just kind of like talk like this and we just keep on going.

• 21:33Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah. And your dad owned a trucking company?

• 21:37Speaker 03

At the tail end, he did. He ran a trucking company.

• 21:39Dax Shepard?

Was he himself a truck driver?

• 21:41Speaker 03

No, I worked there on the docks.

• 21:44Dax Shepard?

  Loading.

• 21:44Speaker 03

No, they didn't let me load.

• 21:45Dax Shepard?

They didn't let you? They didn't let you near the forklift?

• 21:50Dax Shepard?

  And mom was a counselor?

• 21:51Speaker 03

She was a teacher and then raised us and then got more into counseling after we left.

• 21:56Dax Shepard?

So you have a very confusing, when I go through my stereotypes of where I grew up, Michigan, people didn't play tennis. They weren't swimmers. Like your sports, I can't really put you in a box. You were an athlete, but you're golfing and swimming?

• 22:08Speaker 03

No, I rebelled against golfing because everyone was golfing.

• 22:11Speaker 01

  Oh, okay, okay.

• 22:11Speaker 03

Well, it was rebelling against, it felt like the sport of the religious right.

• 22:15Speaker 01

  Oh, interesting.

• 22:17Speaker 03

My dad, he did all right. We were middle class. He gave us certainly much better than what he had. He was out, house poor, Oklahoma, and gave us much better opportunities, but I don't know how to bug up my ass about that one. And yet I watch all the masters. I love them. I find them so relaxing.

• 22:32Dax Shepard?

They're great to take a nap to, right?

• 22:34Speaker 03

They're good to doze and come back in.

• 22:35Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, not much has happened.

• 22:37Speaker 03

Come in and see hole 16, 17, 18.

• 22:39Speaker 01

That's not really a good selling point. Like it's good to nap to.

• 22:44Dax Shepard?

  If you like napping.

• 22:44Speaker 03

It is incredible what these guys do. It's amazing.

• 22:47Dax Shepard?

I had no interest in it and then I got sucked into Full Swing, which is the same fucking company that did Drive to Survive.

• 22:52Speaker 03

  Love that one.

• 22:52Dax Shepard?

Everything they make I watch. Do you watch the Jockey one?

• 22:55Speaker 03

  No.

• 22:56Dax Shepard?

The Race for the Triple Crown?

• 22:57Speaker 03

No, but we just did one with them. Isle of Man, TT.

• 23:00Dax Shepard?

  Oh my god.

• 23:01Speaker 03

  Four episodes with Channing's company.

• 23:04Dax Shepard?

  No.

• 23:04Speaker 03

And then Channing's gonna do a film.

• 23:06Dax Shepard?

  Oh baby, you've been then?

• 23:08Speaker 03

  I've never been.

• 23:09Dax Shepard?

Okay, that's what we'll do together.

• 23:10Speaker 03

  Have you been?

• 23:11Dax Shepard?

  No.

• 23:11Speaker 03

This is the most insane race.

• 23:13Speaker 01

And you want to race in it?

• 23:14Dax Shepard?

  No.

• 23:14Speaker 03

  No.

• 23:15Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 23:16Speaker 03

Oh my god, these guys are another breed.

• 23:17Dax Shepard?

I've told you about this race, a couple people die every single race.

• 23:20Speaker 01

  Yeah, that sounds horrible.

• 23:21Speaker 03

Not last year, last year they got through.

• 23:23Dax Shepard?

Was that the one you were filming that? Cause that would be good.

• 23:26Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 23:27Dax Shepard?

  You got lucky.

• 23:27Speaker 03

Like even the MotoGP guys go, uh-uh, those guys are fucking nuts.

• 23:31Dax Shepard?

Okay, great, we're right here. What it enrages in me is you're a coward, I'm so afraid to do that. And now weirdly, I have got to do that, cause I'm a coward if I don't do this. That's what drove me to it.

• 23:44Speaker 01

  He has so much shame.

• 23:46Dax Shepard?

  What drove you to it?

• 23:48Speaker 03

There is that white trash side of the Ozarks. Growing up, getting on a minibike and being at the lake and in bass boats. And my dad would give it to us at 12 and we'd take the boat out ourselves. And then driving too early and driving on dirt roads, driving in the rain, driving in the ice.

• 24:02Dax Shepard?

  Did it snow there?

• 24:03Speaker 03

  Oh yeah.

• 24:04Dax Shepard?

Driving in the snow is the funnest thing a young man can do.

• 24:07Speaker 03

Except you hit the black ice and.

• 24:10Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, it'll surprise you.

• 24:11Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 24:12Dax Shepard?

The motorcycle thing, just you started watching it?

• 24:15Speaker 03

No, I had one when I was a kid and then kind of lost it in the 90s and then got back on it. I'd kind of watched a little bit in the Mick Doohan period when he was winning MotoGP. That's a crazy story because he had a horrible accident in the early 90s. They were gonna take his leg, he said, don't, please don't, don't. And they revolutionized this thing that's now it's common practice where they fused his two legs together to get blood supply.

• 24:38Speaker 01

  Whoa.

• 24:39Speaker 03

And worked, got up, won five championships.

• 24:42Speaker 01

  What?

• 24:42Speaker 03

Yeah, and now his son is Jack Doohan, who was driving for Alpine.

• 24:46Dax Shepard?

Oh my, that's his son? He's a rookie this year?

• 24:49Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 24:49Dax Shepard?

Oh wow, I had no idea.

• 24:51Speaker 03

I just had a flashback, did you ever go to demolition derby?

• 24:53Dax Shepard?

  Oh god, yeah.

• 24:54Speaker 03

Okay, so demolition derby is a bunch of guys getting a car, any kind of car, usually station wagons one, cause they were going reverse. And they just bang the shit out of each other and the last man standing wins. Sometimes it's a figure eight, but I went to those a lot. And then I had an crazy uncle, he was a preacher, had this kind of Elvis hair.

• 25:10Dax Shepard?

  And he raced stock cars.

• 25:11Speaker 01

You just grew up around it.

• 25:12Dax Shepard?

Yeah. How much were you in search of masculinity? I was deeply, my story is, my dad wasn't around. So I was like, whatever the dude said to do, ride a wheelie, jump your bike, whatever the thing was, fight. I was racing towards it. I had to get some kind of masculine validation. Were you in search of that?

• 25:31Speaker 03

I never put that much thought into it. My dad was a pretty cool customer and I think I absorb it. You know, I see it in my roles. I'm either doing him or I'm rebelling against him in some way.

• 25:40Dax Shepard?

  Is he with us still?

• 25:42Speaker 03

Yes, he's eighty three. Gonna see him next week.

• 25:44Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 25:45Speaker 03

He's pretty cool. But you know, going to the drive in theaters, they didn't have a lot of money. So we would pop popcorn. By the time you got there, it was wet. They'd make Kool-Aid and we'd go sit on the front of the big Buick and watch movies in our neighborhood. We had a drive in theater. Yeah, but also these ideas of masculinity, because we've seen a lot of Clint Eastwood. We would see Butch and Sundance.

• 26:06Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 26:06Speaker 01

Do you have brothers and sisters?

• 26:08Speaker 03

I got a younger brother, younger sister.

• 26:09Speaker 01

  Okay, so you're first born?

• 26:11Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 26:12Speaker 01

That wouldn't have been my guess.

• 26:13Dax Shepard?

You don't read as first born.

• 26:14Speaker 03

  Why?

• 26:15Dax Shepard?

You're kind of too nice. What was your thing?

• 26:18Speaker 01

Cause I'm first born. We are bossy, I suppose. I associate that type of adventure with a middle or youngest.

• 26:27Dax Shepard?

Ah, okay. That's the other thing. I had an older brother, five years older than me. So whatever he was doing, I was trying to do. So he was in a BMX and then I was in a BMX and he was in a skateboard.

• 26:35Speaker 01

You're always trying to raise the stakes when you're a younger sibling.

• 26:38Speaker 03

  That'd be my brother, certainly.

• 26:39Speaker 01

  Really?

• 26:39Speaker 03

  Always getting in trouble.

• 26:40Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 26:41Dax Shepard?

  Is he wild?

• 26:42Speaker 03

He was wild then, now he's uber successful and whatever he takes on, he masters it. But that was the thing, I think, when you talk about masculinity, maybe I put it in terms of capability. Cause that was a big thing with my dad. You get up and you do it and he had us mowing the lawn at eight, you know? Like he shouldn't be around these blades and things and dumping them. But all my life I had a job.

• 27:02Dax Shepard?

Okay, so maybe that's another thing I chase and maybe do is competence. Competence is so hot.

• 27:07Speaker 03

I'm gonna agree with you. You've talked about all those sports. I was okay at all of them. Didn't stick with any of them long enough to be great at them. Not that I even could.

• 27:16Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 27:16Speaker 03

But to be competent in all of them, yeah.

• 27:19Dax Shepard?

Did you ever have to beat anyone up to save your brother?

• 27:22Speaker 03

No, in fact, I remember he got in fights before I did.

• 27:25Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 27:25Speaker 03

Yeah. I remember getting in a fight and I grabbed the guy in the balls. Like, oh wow. It worked.

• 27:31Speaker 01

Yeah. That's what they tell you.

• 27:33Speaker 03

  Desperation again.

• 27:34Speaker 01

  It worked.

• 27:35Dax Shepard?

I wonder why it worked though? Was it because it?

• 27:36Speaker 03

Hurt so bad because everyone's such a homophobe.

• 27:43Speaker 01

Run away. Was that happening then? Was there like a lot of calling?

• 27:47Speaker 03

Yeah, don't cry. Yeah, don't be gay. Yeah. That kind of stuff. A lot of that. That was that era, error, that era, but error.

• 27:55Speaker 01

It's still happening, though. We thought it was gone. And then we were talking to Dax's kid the other day. She was like, this kid in my class is racist. And she was like telling, I'm like, he is racist.

• 28:04Speaker 03

Oh, yeah, like crazy racist in Alice.

• 28:06Speaker 01

And they're 10. And I thought it was done. And maybe it's just human nature to be cruel.

• 28:12Speaker 03

  It is, I think.

• 28:13Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 28:14Speaker 03

And nice. No, benevolent is the word I was looking for.

• 28:18Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 28:19Dax Shepard?

Okay, so you go to University of Missouri?

• 28:21Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 28:22Dax Shepard?

You must have had pretty good grades.

• 28:23Speaker 03

  I was all right, yeah.

• 28:24Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, just all right?

• 28:25Speaker 03

  Good enough.

• 28:26Dax Shepard?

Yeah, good enough. And you wanted to do journalism?

• 28:30Speaker 03

I wanted to do architecture, but there wasn't an architectural path at Mizzou. But they had the best journalism school. And then I thought, I don't really want to interview people, but I'll design magazines or movie posters. It was going kind of the design angle.

• 28:46Dax Shepard?

  Had you read Fountainhead already?

• 28:47Speaker 03

  I had not read Fountainhead.

• 28:49Dax Shepard?

Okay, let's talk about Fountainhead for one second.

• 28:51Speaker 03

Okay, I'm not a big fan, by the way.

• 28:53Dax Shepard?

I, 20 years ago, read some interview with you. I swore it said you liked Fountainhead.

• 28:58Speaker 03

  I think I did then.

• 28:59Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. This is what I want to talk about. Because I was like, hmm, I'm gonna check that book out. This is his favorite book. I read it and I was like, oh, yeah, Howard Rourke. I want to be Howard. No matter what happens, it's just proven I'm right. That's a very appealing archetype when you're young.

• 29:14Speaker 01

Read it. What is he like?

• 29:15Dax Shepard?

Howard Rourke is basically Frank Lloyd Wright, right? That's the kind of model.

• 29:19Speaker 03

The idea is model on, yeah, I ran, modeled it off Frank Lloyd Wright.

• 29:22Dax Shepard?

Yeah, so he would design things for people, but he wasn't really interested in what they wanted. He was a genius and he would come in and he would build something for you.

• 29:29Speaker 03

Let me show you what you want.

• 29:30Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 29:31Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 29:32Dax Shepard?

It's his vision. Certainly, people would be against it, but when it was all over, he would be right. And I think when you're 20, you're like, yeah, man.

• 29:39Speaker 03

Validation. I was right. That's all you want. I'm a genius. And there was also this idealism of, she came from socialism and this idea of an individual voice and supporting the individual voice, I think, meant a lot to her. And I think it's the basis behind this. And so as a young person, you read the idealism, because spoiler alert, he'll burn it all down if you take his thing and corrupt it. There was no group sport in it. So in this day and age, blowing a building is not really.

• 30:06Speaker 01

  It's not cool.

• 30:07Speaker 03

Yeah. Not the cool. Not the course you want to take.

• 30:09Dax Shepard?

There's other ways to handle it, probably.

• 30:11Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 30:12Dax Shepard?

Okay, so you already had loved architecture. So yeah, if you already loved architecture and you're in your twenties and you read that book, it's like, this thing was written for me.

• 30:19Speaker 03

Yeah. Then did you read Atlas Shrugged?

• 30:21Dax Shepard?

  Yes. James, what is it?

• 30:22Speaker 03

  Galt. Galt, yeah.

• 30:24Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 30:24Speaker 03

I read it and then I went.

• 30:26Dax Shepard?

Yeah, it fell apart for me reading that.

• 30:28Speaker 03

I know so many people love this book, but for me, it was like, we're special and we're gonna keep our specialness to us.

• 30:33Speaker 01

  Similar theme.

• 30:35Dax Shepard?

  It was all about individualism.

• 30:36Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 30:36Speaker 03

But it was also this entitlement to, our opinion is right and we're best and we're gonna keep it to ourselves because you don't deserve us.

• 30:44Dax Shepard?

Compromise would be a very ugly word for.

• 30:47Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 30:47Dax Shepard?

Her or any of those books.

• 30:48Speaker 01

  Right.

• 30:49Speaker 03

Now, is this true, that you left college a week before our graduation? No, I actually went through graduation. I just didn't finish my last week of classes and actually graduate, but my parents were already coming.

• 31:00Speaker 01

Oh, you went to the ceremony, but you didn't graduate.

• 31:03Speaker 03

Fucking walk the line, hat and all, cap.

• 31:05Dax Shepard?

You wanted to be able to throw your hat.

• 31:07Speaker 01

  Well, sure, it's very fun.

• 31:08Dax Shepard?

I'm gonna miss that. That's a crazy fucking decision.

• 31:10Speaker 03

No, because I decided, come to LA.

• 31:13Speaker 01

You only had one week left.

• 31:14Speaker 03

I had one week left, but what's the Spike Jones movie adaptation? Remember when Chris Cooper talks about, he's into orchids? Yeah, yeah. He talked about his former Jones was about some kind of fish breeding. I think it was Meryl asking him what happens and he says, done with fish. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It felt like that for me, just done. I was kind of lamented that movies weren't an option. I'd always loved movies. I met this friend whose dad had a condo in Burbank and said I could stay there for one month.

• 31:42Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 31:43Speaker 03

  And I went.

• 31:43Dax Shepard?

  Green light.

• 31:44Speaker 03

I'm going to it. And he moved to Beverly.

• 31:48Dax Shepard?

Wow. What car did you drive out for that?

• 31:50Speaker 03

  Datsun 200SX.

• 31:52Dax Shepard?

  Oh, wow.

• 31:53Speaker 03

  With the bumper hanging off.

• 31:53Dax Shepard?

Okay, it wasn't in great shape.

• 31:55Speaker 01

  Do you still have it?

• 31:55Speaker 03

  No.

• 31:56Speaker 01

Oh, sometimes it's fun to have those old, original.

• 31:59Dax Shepard?

Do you fantasize about getting any of the stupid cars you have? Cause I had a 91 Honda Civic DX for a decade here and I want to get one and make it fucking fast.

• 32:08Speaker 03

I was just looking, my dad had a 74 Monte Carlo.

• 32:11Dax Shepard?

  You gotta get it.

• 32:12Speaker 01

  You gotta get it.

• 32:13Speaker 03

Just for fun. Just a little tribute.

• 32:16Speaker 01

How often are you scrolling those cars? Be honest.

• 32:19Speaker 03

Almost as often as I'm scrolling Zillow.

• 32:22Speaker 01

Yeah, I know. Zillow will really.

• 32:24Speaker 03

I love house porn, house porn, car porn, bike porn.

• 32:28Dax Shepard?

Well, you've been in this situation for a long time, but for so long, it was just, I dreamt about it. And then I could do it and then I did it. I bought too much stuff.

• 32:35Speaker 03

I saw the toys out there. Looks fun.

• 32:38Dax Shepard?

This is me now constrained. So I have these rules I have to have in place. Like I have to look at the car like 10 times.

• 32:44Speaker 03

So you make sure that you put the time in to make it worth its while.

• 32:47Dax Shepard?

That's right. Cause I'm dangerous. I get on Bring a Trailer and I'm like, oh my fucking God, I need that thing so bad.

• 32:56Dax Shepard?

Stay tuned for more Armchair Expert if you dare. This episode is supported by Helix.

• 33:06Speaker 01

Okay. Can we talk about how November is basically survival mode between the holidays, the travel, the hosting, the cooking, the everything? Sleep is the one thing keeping me from completely unraveling.

• 33:16Dax Shepard?

It really is the foundation and I think people underestimate how much a bad mattress is quietly ruining their day. You wake up stiff, your back's angry, you're already behind before your feet hit the floor.

• 33:27Speaker 01

That was me before Helix. I took their sleep quiz, which is so fast. It took me like two minutes and they matched me to a mattress that actually fits how I sleep. Not a guess, not a firm or soft coin flip. It's a real match. I have a midnight mattress and I really like it. I was noticing it because I actually had to sleep in one of my other beds.

• 33:45Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 33:45Speaker 01

  Recently.

• 33:46Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 33:46Speaker 01

That doesn't have a Helix mattress on it and I really could tell a big difference in my sleep.

• 33:50Dax Shepard?

Temperature was all over the map.

• 33:51Speaker 01

It was a mess. I need a new one.

• 33:53Dax Shepard?

Look, they've got over 20 mattress models. So whether you sleep hot, need extra back support, or you've got a partner who moves around all night, there's one built for you. Plus free shipping and a 365 night happy with Helix guarantee. That's a full year to decide.

• 34:08Speaker 01

Helix has been named the most awarded mattress by Forbes, Wired and more. So it's not just us being enthusiastic. The experts agree.

This episode is brought to you by ServiceNow. Look, I have my dream job. I get to talk to folks I admire like crazy and ask them virtually any question that I want to. I can't imagine a better way to spend my time. But even dream jobs have some not so dreamy parts, the stuff that gets in the way of the actual work. Now that's where ServiceNow's AI specialists come in. They don't just tell you what you should do about your busy work. They actually do it, start to finish, cases closed, requests handled, no extra work for you. So you and your team can focus on what matters most, which for me is, are they obsessed with male bodies on the same level as I am?

• 35:15Speaker 01

  They never are.

• 35:16Dax Shepard?

To learn how to put AI to work for people, visit servicenow.com. We get support from Instagram teen accounts. So we talk a lot on this show about how the world is different now than when we were growing up. And one of the biggest differences is obviously social media. And I think a lot of people wonder, okay, what's actually being done to make it safer for teenagers?

• 35:38Speaker 01

  Which is a fair question.

• 35:39Dax Shepard?

Yeah, so Instagram has got something called teen accounts and they come with automatic protections built in by default. So anyone between 13 and 17 is automatically placed into this experience. They get age appropriate content settings, contact limits, so that by default, only people they're already connected to can message them. And time management tools, daily time limit reminders, and also sleep mode that mutes notifications from 10 PM to 7 AM.

• 36:05Speaker 01

  Sleep mode is genius.

• 36:06Dax Shepard?

Right? And here's the thing, for anyone under 16, a parent has to give permission to change any of those settings to be less strict. The guardrails are on and Instagram keeps building new safety features to create age appropriate experiences for teens.

• 36:22Speaker 01

I am really glad Instagram is helping to give parents peace of mind with teen accounts.

• 36:41Dax Shepard?

Okay, so you drive out into Dotson. I did hear a funny story about you wanting to get your SAG card and interjecting along.

• 36:47Speaker 03

Oh, I got shut down so hard. I was doing extra work for about a year and a half before I got to do something real. And I was thrilled. I loved it. I couldn't believe I could be on set. When I landed in Burbank, I got the paper, went to McDonald's. I had $275 left in my name. There were three extra agencies. You could pay them 25 bucks and you were in. I found in the paper and I got in. I'm doing an industrial video by the end of the week. And I get this, um, I get this gig. I'm a-

• 37:14Dax Shepard?

I hear you're already inflating. What happened?

• 37:17Speaker 03

I'm an extra in this movie.

• 37:18Dax Shepard?

  I land this role.

• 37:19Speaker 03

I land this- Job is extra.

• 37:22Dax Shepard?

  It's a waiter.

• 37:22Speaker 03

When I started, I put them on the resume like they were real. And it still haunts me.

• 37:27Speaker 01

  That's great.

• 37:27Speaker 03

It's a restaurant scene. The main characters Charlie Sheen and DB Sweeney and a bunch of other actors that I wasn't necessarily aware of. And I am the waiter. I'm supposed to bring up champagne and pour champagne. They show me how to do it. You gotta pour, you spin, you wipe the thing. I said, great.

• 37:41Speaker 01

  That's more than an extra.

• 37:43Speaker 03

Well, it was a chosen extra.

• 37:44Speaker 01

  Oh, wow.

• 37:45Speaker 03

  I got them put forward.

• 37:46Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 37:47Speaker 03

And the whole game was, how do you get your SAG card? Because you can't get a job if you don't have your SAG card. But you can't get your SAG card unless you've had a job. So it was this catch 22.

• 37:55Dax Shepard?

  Specifically, you need to speak.

• 37:57Speaker 03

  Yeah, that was the-

• 37:58Dax Shepard?

  Barrier to entry.

• 37:59Speaker 03

Yes. And like a jackass, they're doing the scene. I get to the last actor and she seemed lower on the totem pole. Maybe? And literally, the scene is going on. I pour her champagne and I go, would you like anything else?

• 38:16Dax Shepard?

I want the dailies from them.

• 38:18Speaker 01

  Me too. Oh, my God.

• 38:20Speaker 03

Cut, cut, cut. First AD runs over. You do that again, you're out of here.

• 38:25Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 38:26Speaker 03

It was a shame for the rest of the night. Took a shot.

• 38:30Speaker 01

  Look, it was there.

• 38:31Dax Shepard?

These are the best stories. Favreau has one. Favreau is an extra. I think it's Hoffman, Hoffa or something. Something's shooting in Chicago when he lives there. He's an extra and he's in a van and he's driving through the background of a scene. It occurs to him, they're not gonna be able to see me. There's not enough light in here.

• 38:50Speaker 03

  No.

• 38:51Dax Shepard?

  So he decides-

• 38:52Speaker 03

  No.

• 38:53Dax Shepard?

I'm gonna turn on the interior lights and I'm gonna drop the visor and turn that light on. Take three, someone finally knows, like, what's going on with the fucking extra? Why is the extra lit in the van? Cut.

• 39:05Speaker 03

  You can't light yourself.

• 39:07Speaker 01

  Oh my god.

• 39:09Speaker 03

  Industrious though.

• 39:10Speaker 01

  Oh my god.

• 39:11Speaker 03

Yeah, we're desperate at that time.

• 39:12Speaker 01

  Yeah, yes. It's so hard.

• 39:14Speaker 03

It is, it's sweet. How long before you were, I guess when Selma and Louise, how long before we get back? They would say, what, five years? If you're not working in five years, go home. I got that at year four. We just need to honorably mention, Monica and I's shared favorite movie is Seven.

• 39:32Speaker 01

Yeah, it's actually hard for me to, with you sitting there, think it's you.

• 39:37Dax Shepard?

  Connect.

• 39:37Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 39:38Dax Shepard?

  That's that thing.

• 39:38Speaker 01

It's that thing. We've watched it so many times. It holds up.

• 39:42Speaker 03

  It does hold.

• 39:43Dax Shepard?

  Oh, it's foolproof.

• 39:44Speaker 03

That's David Fincher, that's Andy, Kevin Walker.

• 39:47Speaker 01

But the two of you also.

• 39:49Speaker 03

Yeah, what about working with Morgan? I interviewed Morgan this year. With the gun down, David.

• 39:54Speaker 01

  Oh my god.

• 39:55Speaker 03

No, he's the voice of God. I had hit a point, ninety-four is such a bugged out year. That's Cobain, that's OJ, the whole summer. I had had not such great experiences coming off a couple of jobs and I just wasn't sure what I was doing. I had the weirdest summer. I had this girlfriend who was into reptiles. We bought forty chameleons. I was living in Errol Flynn's old bachelor pad, glass windows, and they were filled. Our house was like a terrarium.

• 40:22Speaker 01

Girlfriend who was into reptiles. That's so specific.

• 40:26Dax Shepard?

  Not five or ten.

• 40:27Speaker 03

  I know, I know.

• 40:29Dax Shepard?

Were you showing off like, we'll take them all?

• 40:31Speaker 03

It was the most unhealthy time. I just needed to check out. I would wake up, I would get a bong load, I'd have four Coca Colas on ice, no food. This particular summer, and I watched the OJ trial and trying to figure out, what do I do next? What do I do next? And then I read this script, my dear friend and manager and basically my sister now. Cynthia sends this over, she says, you gotta read this. I read the first seven pages. I call her up, I go, are you kidding me? The cliche, the old cop wants out, the young cop comes in, he's looking at his trophies? His high school football trophies? She goes, just finish it.

• 41:07Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 41:08Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 41:09Speaker 03

And then I go meet Finch and he was just talking about films like I'd never heard anyone speak about film.

• 41:14Dax Shepard?

Yeah, what had he made? Already.

• 41:16Speaker 03

Just Alien three and he had had a crap experience on that. Got fired off it three times.

• 41:20Dax Shepard?

  Oh, wow. Wow.

• 41:21Speaker 03

And I just got the Jones back and finding that it just reinvigorated what I wanted out of this thing. What's possible.

• 41:29Dax Shepard?

Can I argue there's a humility to that performance that I'm wondering was that new? Because you're coming off of California, like I watched California and that's kind of the dream role I would want to play. Growing up. Hey Dale, put your titty back in your shirt.

• 41:41Speaker 03

Hey Dale, put your titty back up.

• 41:43Dax Shepard?

  Back up.

• 41:45Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 41:46Dax Shepard?

That's who I want to be. I want to drink the fucking beer and be a badass and all that stuff. And so to go play, you're kind of a putz in seven.

• 41:52Speaker 03

Yeah, it's the naivete or even the hubris that you think you know the world. And that's what I liked about the Mills character. You grow up in this vacuum, you see the world as your own backyard and you do not appreciate that there are people who think differently than you. Have ulterior motives, other beauties, different beliefs. And that was always kind of a theme for me. This idea of your own hubris. Anytime I've ever gotten knocked down, it's been because of hubris. It's been because I think I know what's going on.

• 42:22Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 42:22Speaker 03

I think I know the score.

• 42:23Dax Shepard?

But you got going there and say lines like, no, he's fucking dancing around his grandma's underpants or whatever the hell that line is. Like, there's a vanity in that.

• 42:32Speaker 03

No, he thinks he understands there's good and there's bad. There's black and there's white and that's the world. Bad guys gotta go. It's that kind of stupidity.

• 42:40Dax Shepard?

Was it already the situation where it's like a bazillion takes? I entered this with a lot of insecurity, like, I'm not sure I belong here. That would have triggered for me like, I suck. I don't think it's completely fair for my friend, David Fincher, because I think he's brilliant and he knows what he wants. The only time I ever did that was on Fight Club and it was a big Steadicam shot outside in the parking lot. Coming into the bar, going down, starting the Fight Club. That was like 40 takes, but they're so technical. And so usually there's a technical aspect of it or.

• 43:06Speaker 03

If he needs to beat the acting out of the actor, which is the Kubrick way. And that's the only time I've ever seen it flare up in that way.

• 43:13Dax Shepard?

  It never triggered your insecurities.

• 43:15Speaker 03

He is not shy to do it. No, in fact, I was more insecure. The first three takes, four takes, I'm trying to find my way. At that time, I'd feel safer. Now, like, two takes, please.

• 43:25Speaker 01

  Yeah, I gotta get home.

• 43:26Dax Shepard?

  Stitch together.

• 43:27Speaker 03

Yeah, take the time and do that and you can edit.

• 43:30Speaker 01

I guess it's true. If you're doing that many, you feel safe that one has worked.

• 43:34Speaker 03

I did, but it was so important to me.

• 43:36Dax Shepard?

How much insecurity were you working with at that period?

• 43:39Speaker 03

First half of the career was a lot of insecurity. And always doubting, you know, you get in there, you get in the ring and you have this amount of time and that's compromised, that goes into cement and that's it.

• 43:49Dax Shepard?

Also, it's not like you necessarily had some long period where you're working with okay actors. You're pretty immediately working with, I don't know, Legends of the Fall. You were with Anthony Hopkins right out of the gate.

• 43:57Speaker 03

Yeah, it was cool. I feel like my learning has really been on film. Also, it came from just a love of movies and love of performance and wanting to make sure I got it right. Like, there's this idea, right? And what you learn to understand is it's just being truthful. And if it's truthful, it's gonna play.

• 44:13Speaker 01

What's the first time you felt that?

• 44:16Dax Shepard?

Oh, that's a good question, Monty.

• 44:17Speaker 03

It is a good question. Oh, man. I just know the best moments, I started figuring out in the 90s, were things I hadn't planned for. They were being in the moment and then it flows.

• 44:29Dax Shepard?

I'm not sure when I'm good and not. There's times I thought I was great and I'm just okay. And there's times I think I suck and I'm kinda good.

• 44:35Speaker 03

  That's the early stuff, yeah.

• 44:36Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 44:37Speaker 03

Fucking rock that one. And you look at it and you go, oh my god. I do have some moments. One of the first one was in this teen horror film, one of my very first jobs. For some reason, I was thinking I was Sean Penn. I run into high school, I see a dead teacher and I go, no!

• 44:56Speaker 03

No! I don't even know this guy.

• 44:58Dax Shepard?

You wish you had a wall of law against him, slide down.

• 45:00Speaker 01

Was it your street car moment?

• 45:02Speaker 03

  Exactly.

• 45:04Dax Shepard?

I'm afraid to ask you this one, but here we go. Have you ever heard this Cary Grant quote? Everyone wants to be Cary Grant. Even I want to be Cary Grant.

• 45:12Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 45:13Dax Shepard?

Do you relate to that at all?

• 45:14Speaker 03

Maybe the earlier years, I don't know. I don't even think much about perception anymore. But yeah, certainly. People look at you this way and I don't feel that good. Other people look at me like I'm an asshole and I go, I feel a little better than that though.

• 45:27Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 45:28Speaker 03

You run into that, but I don't think about perception much anymore. I believe in what I'm doing. I understand my craft. I feel like I elevate the jobs I'm in and I make sure I do and I put the work in. I work hard.

• 45:38Speaker 01

When were you able to drop that?

• 45:41Speaker 03

I made a big switch. I remember going in the nineties going, you could plug any one of us into this role. This kind of movie, this leading man kind of thing is all going to be the same. So that's boring and it's really about chasing an image. And then I made a switch in the early aughts where I said, I know the movies I've enjoyed this far and why? I'm not taking anything because someone tells me it should, or it's good, or someone else is going to get it if I don't. I did a couple of those and always didn't work. And I just made this switch and really I enjoy what I do.

• 46:08Dax Shepard?

Now, and I'm going to admit that this is really Malcolm Gladwell's question because I admire him so much. And we're pals and I called him, I was like, I'm interviewing Pitt and I'm nervous. And I want it to be great. And I'm wondering if we have the same curiosity. What is your great curiosity about him? And he said, I guess I'm most curious, the gap between the public Brad Pitt and the real Brad Pitt. If that gap has shrank or gotten broader.

• 46:38Speaker 03

  Wow.

• 46:39Dax Shepard?

  And I thought, that's a cool question. And I guess I'm curious.

• 46:43Speaker 03

I don't break a lot of this down. That's a hard, I don't know if I put it in either way because I go in and I go in hard. I work hard and then I always need to disappear and step out. I just need to refill. I'm not that guy that's really can be out and about in the public and people. And I've always enjoyed my solitude, not my loneliness, not those periods, but the solitude. That can be with loved ones and friends or family and I really need it. I'm getting ready to start now this big press gauntlet juggernaut for this film that deserves. To go worldwide and I gotta go do that. I'll get up for it as I need to do. I don't feel like I'm very good at it. I've always been a little embarrassed this side of it.

• 47:21Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 47:21Speaker 03

And I still have that feeling each time. I gotta get myself up for it. And it takes a lot out of me. So then I need to step back and really disappear. And that's worked well for me. So has it gotten bigger or smaller? I think it's gotten smaller, my relationship with it. The gap's gotten smaller.

• 47:38Dax Shepard?

Is the embarrassment because it feels like there's some kind of lack of humility in that part of the job?

• 47:45Speaker 03

Yeah, you know, where we grew up and especially that era, you're a braggart if you talk about yourself. You're conceited and I got accused of that a lot as a kid, even just being quiet. We get accused of being conceited or something and I didn't understand that. And then there's just the fear I'll always have, just putting my foot in my mouth or stepping in a pile of shit.

• 48:03Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 48:03Speaker 03

Having to live with it. I've never considered this my specialty. I'd rather make things, whether that's a chair or a shirt or a movie and let it speak for itself. And move on and get to the next, but this is a group sport and we gotta support it.

• 48:17Dax Shepard?

My arc, I'm embarrassed to even try to compare it to yours, but my arc was I wanted it so bad. It happened. It was so fun for a minute. Then I was down in Austin, I was making Idiocracy and I was in Fuddruckers and I was like, oh, that table of people staring at me. Oh, that table's also staring at me. And I remember leaving the restaurant, calling my girlfriend almost in tears going like, I have no control over my environment anymore. And it felt very claustrophobic. Then I hated it and then I came to accept it. And then even more profound in therapy, a few years back, the dude really figured out, helped me figure it out. I feel very fraudulent receiving that attention. I don't feel worthy of that.

• 48:59Speaker 03

Yeah, that's fair enough. But when you say worthy, because the importance isn't there. It's looked at from afar like it's important in some way. And I have a similar version of that. I mean, the way I was able to get my arms around it was, I just remember when I saw my first celebrity, I moved here in a week. I saw John Cusack at a Fishbone concert. I embarrassed the person with me because I was like that. And they were like, shut.

• 49:20Speaker 01

  You're in LA.

• 49:21Speaker 03

She turned her back on me.

• 49:22Dax Shepard?

  This is not cool here.

• 49:23Speaker 03

Yeah, that's not. But I just remember what it meant to me. I met the Harlem Globetrotters when I was a kid. I got pulled out on the court.

• 49:31Dax Shepard?

  No.

• 49:31Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 49:32Dax Shepard?

  Their first taste.

• 49:33Speaker 03

Metal Arc and all of that, remember?

• 49:35Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 49:37Speaker 03

  And Curly and the OGs.

• 49:39Dax Shepard?

  The original squad.

• 49:40Speaker 03

And what it meant to me. And so when you look at it that way, that you can brighten someone's day, it could be like a highlight in some way, like those days were for me. That's how I found my way around it, at least.

• 49:51Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I was reading an interview with Owen Wilson years ago, and I thought he summed it up the best. He goes, you know, it's kind of cool if you think about the fact that you can just make someone's day. I was like, oh, that is a cool power.

• 50:02Speaker 03

  Yeah, it's a lovely thing.

• 50:04Dax Shepard?

You need to like, accept it. It's easy to get caught in fighting it.

• 50:07Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 50:07Dax Shepard?

And you can ruin your life, I think.

• 50:08Speaker 03

Because, you know, guidebook tells you that part of it. I just love movies. I didn't really understand.

• 50:14Speaker 01

  Fame.

• 50:14Speaker 03

Yeah, that part of it. What you lose, what the trade off is. But we got to talk about punked, because punked was pretty revolutionary. Jackass and then into punked. We're coming off this time where we got to be tough guys. We don't show weakness to this punk rock kind of approach. Like, no, no, no, not only that, we're going to embarrass ourselves the most we can. And there was a real freedom in that switch that happened.

• 50:37Dax Shepard?

  I don't think I can appreciate that.

• 50:38Speaker 03

I rank punked up there as something kind of revolutionary. Really, no, I mean this, I mean this.

• 50:42Dax Shepard?

  Thank you.

• 50:43Speaker 03

  Yeah, Jackass as well.

• 50:44Dax Shepard?

Okay, great. So that's one of my questions.

• 50:46Speaker 03

  Okay, great.

• 50:47Speaker 01

Great, thank you for the comment.

• 50:48Dax Shepard?

I want nothing but approval. And then when I get it, I'm like, I don't, I don't want it. All I want is approval, and yet I can't stand it when I get it.

• 50:56Speaker 01

You don't have a brain of someone who needs approval at all.

• 50:59Dax Shepard?

Do you? I think you do.

• 51:00Speaker 03

I wouldn't put it that way either. I know if I like the work I'm putting out there, if I like the stories, it's not going to speak to everyone, but I know it's going to speak to someone else too, and I have a comfort in that. So it's different than approval. When I think of what movies meant to me as a kid, living in a Christian vacuum, you saw different ways to handle things, and you saw different cultures and things around the world. And you saw John Travolta swearing as dad for messing up his hair. I would call him a hair. That kind of shit. And I was just enraptured with it. And movies for me was that kind of other teaching.

• 51:33Speaker 01

He was Brad, do you need it? Like Dax and I need

• 51:38Dax Shepard?

  We're bottomless pits.

• 51:39Speaker 01

Approval from, let's be really honest, people who we think are

• 51:44Dax Shepard?

  High status.

• 51:45Speaker 01

High status. It's a gross way of saying it.

• 51:47Dax Shepard?

  It's my grossest quality.

• 51:49Speaker 03

  People I admire.

• 51:50Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 51:51Speaker 03

Yes, that's fair. Yes. And by the way, I still feel like that kid in Oklahoma, Missouri Ozarks, who's still like groping his way through this whole thing.

• 51:59Dax Shepard?

Still kind of can't believe you're here.

• 52:01Speaker 03

No, I take total responsibility for being here. But to me, it's just another craft. Like anyone who works hard at what they do and has confidence in what they do.

• 52:09Dax Shepard?

Now, Jackass, the person I admire the most is Will Ferrell.

• 52:12Speaker 03

I will not miss a Will Ferrell movie.

• 52:14Dax Shepard?

More what I love is his art installations as a human. So I'm at a Lakers game one time. I'm with Chris and I go, the security guard looks like Will Ferrell. You know what the Lakers, the guys with the red jackets? My God, it really looks like Will Ferrell. And I'm like, that's Will Ferrell. Will Ferrell sitting there as a security guard next to the other security guard.

• 52:34Speaker 03

  Oh, my God.

• 52:34Dax Shepard?

I interviewed him like, what was, I saw you at the Lakers. He goes, oh, I have this bit with Adam where on our birthdays, we give each other outfits and then you have to go use the outfit wherever. And so Adam gave him the full security. And he smuggled it into the Staples Center and he went into the bathroom and put the outfit on. And I'm like, I just admire it so much. I'm almost mad at myself. I haven't thought of that.

• 52:56Speaker 03

But I love the sabotage, the underground fun you got to have with this thing. We'll do that with interviews, going down press lines on oceans like Matt, you have to use God willing in every single interview. Or give him some word or something.

• 53:08Dax Shepard?

But what I really liked about you is I'm watching Jackass one time, which I loved. And all of a sudden you're on the show and they kidnap you.

• 53:18Speaker 03

Celebrity kidnapping. Yes. It was great.

• 53:20Speaker 01

  What?

• 53:21Dax Shepard?

And I'm like, he likes Jackass. Did you reach out to them?

• 53:24Speaker 03

I'm not sure how it happened. I knew Spike through Venture. They were shooting being John Malkovich right next to us while we were shooting. We'd visit the 17th and a half floor, whatever it was.

• 53:37Speaker 03

I loved Jackass. I loved what they were doing. Again, I thought it was revolutionary. Maybe with Spike, I said, you ever need, I'm in. And then Knoxville called up.

• 53:44Dax Shepard?

How'd you end up on Dave? There's another thing. I'm watching Dave, you're on, and I go, oh my God. And then I reverse engineer, I go like, Brad loves Dave? How rad.

• 53:52Speaker 03

I love Dave. My favorite humor is the most irreverent humor. Maybe because I'm so worried stepping shit, people who say the wrong thing. I will at times say things that are so wrong and it just makes me laugh. And so maybe he got word that I really liked the show and he wrote me, said, hey, you want to do something? And I just said, I'm trying, but I can't find a reason not to. So I guess I have to.

• 54:15Dax Shepard?

It's good karma to go participate in the things you love.

• 54:18Speaker 03

  My genius show.

• 54:19Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, he's incredible.

• 54:21Speaker 03

And I still admire that wit because I don't feel like I necessarily have that really quick wit.

• 54:25Dax Shepard?

Isn't it funny who people like admire? Like I was watching the you and Adam Sandler, you did the actor on actor thing.

• 54:31Speaker 03

  Oh, right.

• 54:32Dax Shepard?

And I was like, drama dudes love comedians. Comedians love drama dudes.

• 54:36Speaker 03

  I love comedians.

• 54:37Dax Shepard?

All of us want to be musicians.

• 54:38Speaker 03

  Love comedians, love musicians.

• 54:41Speaker 01

God, we all just want to be the thing we're not. It's wild.

• 54:44Dax Shepard?

How could you not? Okay, so I saw Once Upon a Time when it came out. I liked it a lot. Then five years went by and I'm on a plane a year and a half ago and it's there. So I start watching it. And I'm like, this movie is way better than I remember. And then we get off the plane and now I got to finish it. So now I'm in a hotel room watching it on my iPad. And then I'm like, I gotta watch it in my theater. I come home, I watch it in the theater. Then I'm like, I gotta watch it with my friend Nate in the theater. He's got to re-watch it again. And I've watched it now sincerely, probably eight times in the last 18 months. I'm so obsessed with that movie. I think it's second best to only Pulp Fiction. It's so good. And then I started thinking, the one bummer about being in a Tarantino movie is,

• 55:26Dax Shepard?

do you rob yourself of the experience of getting to watch the Tarantino movie?

• 55:31Speaker 03

There's no bummer about being in a Tarantino.

• 55:33Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 55:34Speaker 03

  That dialogue, come on.

• 55:35Dax Shepard?

I encourage you to watch it eight times in the next 18 months.

• 55:38Speaker 03

  That will never happen.

• 55:40Dax Shepard?

If you need to watch it with me in my theater.

• 55:42Speaker 03

  Watching your own shit.

• 55:43Speaker 01

  Yeah, exactly.

• 55:44Dax Shepard?

That's what I'm saying. That could rob you of the experience. Can we talk about Leonardo in it for one second?

• 55:49Speaker 03

  Come on, he's great.

• 55:50Dax Shepard?

In my obsession with this movie, and the more and more I watch it, the more and more I'm blown away with his performance.

• 55:55Speaker 03

Me too. I've been watching it eight times, but.

• 55:57Dax Shepard?

He's playing like six layers. He's an actor. He's not as good as Leonardo DiCaprio as an actor, but he's got to have the scene of his life. But it can't be as good as a Leonardo DiCaprio scene.

• 56:08Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 56:08Dax Shepard?

I don't think people understand the math of what he's doing.

• 56:11Speaker 03

That's the thing that's least understood is the degree of difficulty. And even, we'll get credit for a great director or great writing.

• 56:18Dax Shepard?

  Perfect song choice.

• 56:20Speaker 03

Yes, absolutely. Great editing. We need all these accoutrements to help us out, but no, he was doing multiple layers in there. And that star tantrum cracks me up.

• 56:29Dax Shepard?

  Buddy, I'm a has been.

• 56:35Dax Shepard?

I'm not gonna ask you to rank your co-stars, but just where does he fall in that?

• 56:39Speaker 03

Do you love acting with him?

• 56:40Dax Shepard?

Yeah, he works hard too. I've watched someone like him or Margot work so hard.

• 56:45Speaker 03

I can go through phases where I'm approaching it a little easy. I'm wondering if maybe I don't have the fire anymore. Maybe not offering, then I find something else or I see performances like that and then I go, ooh, gotta up my game. I wanna be like that.

• 56:58Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 56:59Speaker 03

Look at all the cast in that. These were all up and comers, new kids. You got Austin Butler, Margaret Qualley, Sydney Sweeney, Mikey Mattson, Ethan Hawke's daughter. Pretty incredible. Now they're all doing their own things.

• 57:12Dax Shepard?

That was part of my joy of going back and watching it over and over again. I was like, oh, I know all these people now.

• 57:16Speaker 03

Yeah, that's really fun to see.

• 57:18Speaker 01

Yeah, that's part of his genius is being able to scout talent and then help them blow up. Your resume is annoying because we're not gonna get to talk about.

• 57:26Dax Shepard?

  No, we're not.

• 57:27Speaker 01

Oceans is one of my favorites of all time. I came into this show, talked about Moneyball for like three months straight.

• 57:33Dax Shepard?

We just had Michael Lewis on.

• 57:34Speaker 03

  Oh, really?

• 57:35Dax Shepard?

  What a fucking dude.

• 57:36Speaker 03

  What a brain, huh?

• 57:37Dax Shepard?

Oh my God, he's so charismatic and charming.

• 57:39Speaker 03

  And eloquent.

• 57:40Dax Shepard?

  Genius but chill.

• 57:42Speaker 03

I would want him to like me.

• 57:43Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yes, me too.

• 57:45Speaker 01

  Approval.

• 57:46Dax Shepard?

I wanted him desperately. Okay, the only thing I want to ask about once upon a time and then we'll move on is I was getting Duffy vibes. Is he at all in the mix? We owe Duffy an explanation of who he is.

• 57:56Speaker 03

  Funny.

• 57:57Dax Shepard?

I thought I was watching Duffy.

• 57:58Speaker 03

I see my dad, but I understand Duffy's got some of my dad in him. That's not a bad call.

• 58:02Dax Shepard?

Our mutual friend Duffy was a Navy SEAL. He's the toughest human being on planet.

• 58:07Speaker 03

  Yep, rock solid.

• 58:08Dax Shepard?

  He's gorgeous.

• 58:10Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 58:12Dax Shepard?

If you can't see that, you need fucking glasses. He's the only 60 year old man I see like 30 year olds fucking buying him drinks and shit.

• 58:20Dax Shepard?

There's one scene I always love to point out, G.I. Jane.

• 58:23Speaker 03

  He's a trainer.

• 58:24Speaker 01

  Thank you, he's a trainer.

• 58:25Dax Shepard?

How long has he been your trainer?

• 58:26Speaker 03

  I met him on Troy.

• 58:26Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 58:27Speaker 03

So I trained him on Troy in a few, probably the next decade.

• 58:29Dax Shepard?

In G.I. Jane, they needed real Navy SEALs in the movie. And he's in the movie.

• 58:34Speaker 03

  Is that right?

• 58:35Dax Shepard?

Watch it because there's one moment where they need someone to do the ultimate Navy SEAL thing, which is they're in a Zodiac boat and they're flying. Someone's gotta hang out of the side of the Zodiac with a fucking inner tube. And the guy in the water grabs it and then Duffy rips the human being out of the water. The lats are like that wide.

• 58:52Speaker 03

  Yeah, that's him.

• 58:53Dax Shepard?

And you're like, how'd that dude just rip a guy out of the water on a Zodiac going 25 miles an hour?

• 58:58Speaker 03

Those guys, Navy SEALs, Rangers, Delta Force, I mean, their baseline is discomfort. Where we would tap out, that's where they begin.

• 59:06Speaker 01

So if that character's your dad, you said they're either your dad or you're rebelling against your dad. What are the characters that you are actively rebelling against?

• 59:15Speaker 03

Really, my upbringing, when I say my dad, probably my upbringing, like Fight Club and things that are more irreverent.

• 59:19Dax Shepard?

Maybe even being flashy in oceans.

• 59:21Speaker 03

  Was I flashy?

• 59:22Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 59:23Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. You're embracing the flash in that.

• 59:27Speaker 03

I feel like we lost our way after the first one, or at least my guy, because he was kind of the DeVal consigliere guy to George's Danny. I'd like that much more. And then, you know, when you watch CSI or something and they're trying to give a speech, but they gotta give each actor one line.

• 59:40Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 59:41Speaker 03

They just pick up in each line and just equal distribution.

• 59:44Dax Shepard?

  Everyone needs a moment.

• 59:45Speaker 03

Yes, it kind of went that way.

• 59:47Dax Shepard?

One last question, then F1. You've worked in four different decades now, 90s, 2000s, 2000s, 10s. We're now in your fourth decade. Do you have a favorite of those decades of working?

• 59:57Speaker 03

  No.

• 59:58Dax Shepard?

Then I don't have a follow up question.

• 59:59Speaker 03

  Oh.

• 59:59Dax Shepard?

Okay. Is there a sweet spot you get nostalgic about?

• 1:00:02Speaker 03

It's more like periods. So certainly seven. And then losing my way a bit with choices and then landing back with Fight Club and Snatch.

• 1:00:12Dax Shepard?

  Snatch.

• 1:00:13Speaker 03

  This area felt good.

• 1:00:14Dax Shepard?

How did you learn that accent? G'day, g'day. Can you still talk like him?

• 1:00:18Speaker 03

  Uh.

• 1:00:20Speaker 03

I don't know. She's terribly partial to the Perdy Winkle Blue Boy, Bice, something like that. Perdy Winkle Blue Bice.

• 1:00:24Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 1:00:26Speaker 03

  It's terribly partial.

• 1:00:28Dax Shepard?

I would be so scared to take that role.

• 1:00:30Speaker 03

  I was too.

• 1:00:30Dax Shepard?

I'm sure. Okay, so motorsports, we talked about why you're into motorsports.

• 1:00:36Speaker 03

Oh, wait, before we started, I brought you a gift.

• 1:00:38Dax Shepard?

  Oh, you did?

• 1:00:39Speaker 03

I brought you a Apex GP souvenir.

• 1:00:43Dax Shepard?

  I cannot wait.

• 1:00:44Speaker 03

  I didn't bring you one?

• 1:00:45Speaker 01

  That's okay.

• 1:00:46Speaker 03

  You're gonna understand why.

• 1:00:47Speaker 01

I don't even know what that is.

• 1:00:48Dax Shepard?

Could you give her like a hundred bucks or something?

• 1:00:50Speaker 01

Oh, my gosh, this is exciting and unboxing.

• 1:00:53Dax Shepard?

  I wasn't anticipating it.

• 1:00:54Speaker 03

  Yeah, it looks bagging on.

• 1:00:55Dax Shepard?

  Oh, I'm on.

• 1:00:56Speaker 03

Okay, okay, look at the front.

• 1:00:59Dax Shepard?

First of all, you don't know this about me, black and gold's my scheme.

• 1:01:02Speaker 03

  Maybe I did know.

• 1:01:05Speaker 03

This is day one, this is the pit crew shirts, and we have real crew, proper car guys. And they're trying to bring their shirts out all for the guys, it's day one, we're in Silverstone, we're shooting, the crowd's there, it's race weekend, and they start getting shit from the other teams, because look what's on the back.

• 1:01:19Dax Shepard?

  The Action Factory.

• 1:01:21Speaker 03

But they put it on Tramp Stamp.

• 1:01:23Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:01:25Speaker 03

And we started getting so much shit from the other crews, we were between Mercedes and Ferrari, and they were laughing their ass off at our team.

• 1:01:32Speaker 01

  That is fantastic.

• 1:01:33Speaker 03

So they switch out all the shirts, change them, but I saved one.

• 1:01:36Dax Shepard?

Someone went, can you get Glenn from wardrobe?

• 1:01:38Speaker 01

Oh, my God, Dex, that's so special, you got a Tramp Stamp one.

• 1:01:42Speaker 03

You got the Tramp Stamp one.

• 1:01:43Dax Shepard?

Maybe by the end of knowing you, I'll have a full wardrobe of clothes you've given me.

• 1:01:49Dax Shepard?

  We got two items.

• 1:01:50Speaker 03

I'm gonna work on the waist down now.

• 1:01:51Dax Shepard?

Okay, so I had it wrong, and I've wrongly taken a little bit of credit for this. Again, I'm an approval junkie, but my telling of it is, I text you at one point, and I said, are you watching Drive to Survive? If not, text me when you've finished it, I bet it'll be in 18 hours, something along those lines.

• 1:02:08Speaker 03

  Yes, yes, I remember this.

• 1:02:09Dax Shepard?

You did, you texted me like eight hours later, and you're like, oh, fuck, I watched them all.

• 1:02:13Speaker 03

  Probably nine.

• 1:02:14Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So you fell in love with it like I did from that, right?

• 1:02:18Speaker 03

Well, I'd been watching a little, because MotoGP races, there's just not enough of them.

• 1:02:23Dax Shepard?

  There's not.

• 1:02:23Speaker 03

So then you start dipping into F1 a little bit. Now there's not enough F1 races, so I started dipping into Indy. You watching Indy?

• 1:02:29Dax Shepard?

  No.

• 1:02:29Speaker 03

  You're in?

• 1:02:30Dax Shepard?

  Oh, I love it.

• 1:02:31Speaker 03

I've even, as a tourist, I've stepped into NASCAR a little bit.

• 1:02:34Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:02:34Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:02:35Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 1:02:36Dax Shepard?

Okay. I've done a little dabbling. In NASCAR too. I really recommend the night race at Bristol. That's a vibe. Wow. That's like old fashioned. You feel like, yeah, there's bootleggers out here.

• 1:02:46Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, good.

• 1:02:47Dax Shepard?

  Just real quick, Valentino Rossi.

• 1:02:49Speaker 03

Oh, come on. Still miss him. Don't we miss him?

• 1:02:52Speaker 01

  I miss him so much.

• 1:02:53Speaker 03

  Don't you?

• 1:02:54Speaker 01

I don't even want to talk about it. I miss him so much.

• 1:02:56Dax Shepard?

If I had to say the number one god on planet earth, I think it's Valentino Rossi.

• 1:02:59Speaker 03

  Yeah, it's Valentino Rossi.

• 1:03:00Dax Shepard?

He's so fucking charming. Have you ever seen that thing with Lewis and Valentino?

• 1:03:04Speaker 03

No, I've been told. I keep meaning to go look it up. So Lewis gets on his bike and Valley gets in his car.

• 1:03:10Dax Shepard?

That's right. And they go on the track and they both put down times. And Valley's fucking fast.

• 1:03:16Speaker 03

  I'm sure he is.

• 1:03:17Dax Shepard?

And Lewis is fucking great on the bike.

• 1:03:19Speaker 03

Yeah, he's gonna be. Seen there's some video he put out where he went to a gun range?

• 1:03:24Dax Shepard?

  No.

• 1:03:24Speaker 03

Oh, my God. He's like boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.

• 1:03:28Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I guess he's a great surfer. He can do everything.

• 1:03:31Speaker 03

  And well.

• 1:03:31Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. So you fall extra in love with it though through Drive to Survive, I'm imagining?

• 1:03:36Speaker 03

Yeah, I've been dipping in, I guess a little in the aughts, you know, in the Schumacher period. I wasn't in like the religion that it is now.

• 1:03:43Speaker 01

I think the show really escalated it.

• 1:03:46Speaker 03

Especially for America, bringing in new fans, but people have their driver and it's like the success or the struggle of this driver is emblematic of their life.

• 1:03:54Dax Shepard?

The emotional roller coaster we've been on by being really good friends with Ricardo is almost too much for us.

• 1:03:59Speaker 01

  Yeah. It is too much.

• 1:04:02Speaker 03

  It's heartbreaking.

• 1:04:02Speaker 01

I know. We love him so much.

• 1:04:05Speaker 03

I know there's a second generation of where he's gonna go in the sport, doing something.

• 1:04:08Dax Shepard?

  Absolutely.

• 1:04:10Speaker 01

  I know, I know.

• 1:04:11Speaker 03

You know, like the gods are with you. Everyone has their own path.

• 1:04:13Dax Shepard?

And the confidence and how tenuous your grasp on the confidence is.

• 1:04:17Speaker 03

Yeah, even Lewis talks about that.

• 1:04:19Dax Shepard?

  Oh, he does.

• 1:04:19Speaker 03

There's win last year in Silverstone in an inferior car. He was having doubts and we're talking about fractions of a second.

• 1:04:26Speaker 01

  Such a mind fuck.

• 1:04:27Dax Shepard?

Sometimes one or two hundredths of a second for pole.

• 1:04:30Speaker 03

The idea that 20 guys can go around four mile track, three and a half mile track and be within a second of each other.

• 1:04:37Speaker 01

  It's crazy.

• 1:04:37Speaker 03

And the guys on the back end are considered slow.

• 1:04:40Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:04:41Dax Shepard?

Yes. So you don't initiate this. You get approached?

• 1:04:45Speaker 03

I get a call from Joe.

• 1:04:46Dax Shepard?

  Okay, the director.

• 1:04:47Speaker 03

Joe Kaczynski. This mapping technology that he discovered on Top Gun Maverick, mapping in the plains. He has this idea he can do this with the cars on the track, Formula One cars. So very wisely, he said, we're outsiders. I gotta have the tap on the shoulder from someone on the inside. And then he goes to seven time world champion Lewis Hamilton.

• 1:05:06Dax Shepard?

Let's go to the greatest driver.

• 1:05:07Speaker 03

Yeah, and you gotta understand, I've been trying to get a racing movie made for 20 years in cars and different classes and bikes, Isle of Man even, and for whatever reason, it just never came to fruition.

• 1:05:19Dax Shepard?

They're kinda high risk, they're hard to do really well.

• 1:05:21Speaker 03

They are hard to do really well. In fact, when we talk about this one, the most difficult thing of it was threading this needle between a faction of fans, again, that revered this sport as the greatest thing on this earth, and people who don't understand how the sport works, but who's gonna enjoy the movie. So this thing that we're constantly trying to negotiate, like Moneyball, the analytics of it all, we only use the surface analytics of the easy things that we could understand of don't steal, go for walks, and the analytics that they were doing were so much deeper, so much more complex. So to how to tell the story, it's not gonna piss off the fans, and you're not dumbing down for the fans, but it's not gonna be over the head.

• 1:06:02Dax Shepard?

It's a tiny needle to thread.

• 1:06:04Speaker 03

Took us two years, really three, developing the script from nothing.

• 1:06:08Dax Shepard?

And I think Lewis was an incredibly smart move because here's the unbelievable triumph of the movie is, I think its closest comp, and I say this in the best way because I fucking love the movie, is Days of Thunder.

• 1:06:21Speaker 03

First of all, I write him, what'd you think? And he goes, it's titties.

• 1:06:24Dax Shepard?

  Oh, I said fucking titties.

• 1:06:25Speaker 03

So titties, I guess, we all like titties.

• 1:06:27Speaker 01

It's the accent saying it, that's good.

• 1:06:29Speaker 03

But then it says, it wasn't a butt, but Kristen loved it.

• 1:06:32Dax Shepard?

  I said more importantly.

• 1:06:34Speaker 03

Oh, more importantly, okay. It's like, you know, after a screening, you couldn't quite get it and you go, man, the music was awesome.

• 1:06:39Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:40Speaker 03

  You gotta say.

• 1:06:41Speaker 01

  Something.

• 1:06:42Dax Shepard?

You know when you're in one of those screens and you're literally going like, I gotta pick something I can say believably.

• 1:06:46Speaker 03

  Oh, no.

• 1:06:47Dax Shepard?

Boy, that shot with the crane was.

• 1:06:49Speaker 03

  Was incredible.

• 1:06:50Dax Shepard?

That must have been really hard. How many feet was that crane?

• 1:06:53Speaker 03

  A hundred. Divergent, diversion, diversion.

• 1:06:56Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:06:57Dax Shepard?

No, fucking titties is my ultimate compliment.

• 1:06:58Speaker 03

  All right, great.

• 1:06:59Dax Shepard?

Because titties are the best thing in the world.

• 1:07:00Speaker 03

  They kinda are.

• 1:07:01Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, not been taught.

• 1:07:02Speaker 03

  They kinda are.

• 1:07:03Dax Shepard?

The men around for 300,000 years.

• 1:07:04Speaker 03

I think men and women would agree.

• 1:07:05Speaker 01

  I agree.

• 1:07:06Dax Shepard?

But the genius of having Lewis is, it's really hard to make a movie about F1 that could exist actually within the world of F1. I think that's a really tall order.

• 1:07:16Speaker 03

  Dude, this is unprecedented.

• 1:07:18Dax Shepard?

Yes, the fact that they're involved is crazy, that's a coup.

• 1:07:20Speaker 03

That we're infused into the racing season. I don't know what other sport you could really do that with.

• 1:07:28Speaker 03

Stay tuned for more Armchair Expert, if you dare.

• 1:07:40Dax Shepard?

I think having Lewis there is all of the mechanisms and devices that were driving the plot could really happen. And they're so intricate and they are true to Formula One. We all know the reality of it. As you say, it's by a tenth of a second. If you're not on the right team, that's that. There's so many things that are antithetical to a great movie. You can't have a magic device in this. It has to all be real. There's so many clever things your character does that are totally believable, that are so fun, and they're very Days of Thunder-y. We're a last place team. So the idea of you got to play with what you got. So how do you win with what you got? Underdog. Which is a money ball. There's good teams, there's bad teams, and there's 50 feet of crap, then there's us.

• 1:08:23Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Well, the gap in real life is you have Mercedes and Red Bull spending $500 million a year. And then you have, name the team, Haas, doing it on 100 million. That's really significant. Yeah. So how on earth are we going to build any stakes where anything can really happen in reality? And it all really works. What I'm saying, Days of Thunder, the reason that I think that's a compliment is that took something that not everyone was into, and it made it so widely appealing. Yeah, okay, fair enough. Everyone loved Days of Thunder. You did not have to be into cars. Kristen came with me because she had to. I'm like, come on, we're gonna go see this movie. And it ended and she's like, fuck, that's one of the best fucking action movies I've ever seen. That's incredible. I think it's fun as shit. Yeah.

• 1:09:02Speaker 01

I wasn't able to go because I had work.

• 1:09:05Dax Shepard?

But you did get an invite. She got an invite.

• 1:09:07Speaker 01

  I did get an invite.

• 1:09:08Dax Shepard?

  He didn't cut you out.

• 1:09:09Speaker 01

No, no, no. I get myself in places.

• 1:09:12Dax Shepard?

It almost made me question who Monica was because she was gonna ride with us. And she goes, I'm not coming. And I was like, what has happened?

• 1:09:18Speaker 01

Look, I have an operation to run here, and I had to do it.

• 1:09:22Dax Shepard?

  You had to edit.

• 1:09:23Speaker 01

And Dax made a good point. Sometimes it's good for me not to have seen the movie in case things get very esoteric. I also edit the show. So if I'm like, no one's gonna understand any of this.

• 1:09:33Dax Shepard?

I wondered if this was gonna be an hour and a half just talking about wheels.

• 1:09:35Speaker 01

  No, no, no, no.

• 1:09:38Dax Shepard?

It was the danger of us sitting down here.

• 1:09:39Speaker 01

  I know. That's why I'm here.

• 1:09:41Dax Shepard?

You did really well to hold it off, by the way. Yeah, thank you. Thank you. I have a lot of practice. Anytime someone arrives in a cool car, she's like, we're fucked.

• 1:09:47Speaker 01

He can read my face where I'm like... Ready, ready to move on from this part?

• 1:09:52Dax Shepard?

Really specific look that says you're in the weeds on this and no one gives a fuck but you and the guest.

• 1:09:58Dax Shepard?

But the driving is a huge part of this. I can't imagine you want to do this movie unless you're gonna drive.

• 1:10:03Speaker 03

I'm so grateful the others didn't work out. They put us in the fucking cars.

• 1:10:07Speaker 01

  During the race?

• 1:10:08Speaker 03

  During the race weekend.

• 1:10:09Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:10:10Speaker 03

That was my first shot though, it was the race weekend. I mean, it was the whole crew's first shot.

• 1:10:13Speaker 01

So it's race weekend, you're driving.

• 1:10:16Speaker 03

It's race weekend and the first thing we're gonna do is put us out on, it was quali day. It is such a military precision designed machine that whole day to this second. We're gonna get 15 minutes to go out in front of the crowd of how many hundred thousand people at Silverstone.

• 1:10:31Dax Shepard?

Silverstone's Wimbledon, to put it in perspective. It's a cathedral.

• 1:10:34Speaker 03

  This is the UK track.

• 1:10:35Dax Shepard?

  F1's British, that's their track.

• 1:10:37Speaker 03

Yeah, it's the beginning of the official F1 in the 50s, started on this track. It's Halibut.

• 1:10:41Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:42Speaker 03

And they strapped me in the car a half hour early. I'm sweating my balls off. It's really hot and they screw in the horse collar.

• 1:10:47Dax Shepard?

You have a Hans on and everything?

• 1:10:48Speaker 03

Hans helmet. It's really sensory deprivation at that point because you have earphones and you got the fire retardant gear underneath. Then you got your suit and you got the helmet and you're sitting like you wouldn't have bathtub. It's too short to stretch out and they screw in the horse collar.

• 1:11:01Dax Shepard?

And you can only turn your head about this far with the Hans on.

• 1:11:03Speaker 03

And they put us in a half hour early because we couldn't miss our window. We had to prove ourselves, like if this weekend went bad, if it went tits up, this movie isn't happening.

• 1:11:13Speaker 01

See, how come tits up, that's it's used in a bad way.

• 1:11:16Speaker 03

On your back, okay, let's say, let's say if we cock it up.

• 1:11:18Speaker 01

  Yeah, I like that better.

• 1:11:22Speaker 03

If it goes pear shaped, as they would say over there. So we go out and I had practice. It's a whole nother thing to have all these fans there. I'm not gonna be hitting the speeds that those guys are hitting. You see them go around cops, flat out. Dude, it is so breathtaking. I stood at the base of Eau Rouge. This is a storied track in Belgium.

• 1:11:41Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:11:42Speaker 03

Spa. For me, it was the greatest track we got to drive. But I stood at the base with my back at the bottom and they go up this blind ass up.

• 1:11:50Speaker 03

Lewis talks about the G's are first, it compacts your spine into the ground. Then you get up to the top, it's blind. You lift up. He said, it's the only track where you have down and upward G's. Anyway, it's amazing. But you stand right next to the wall like this. The cars are right here, they go, they're flat out. It takes the air out of your lungs. It is so staggering.

• 1:12:09Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:12:10Dax Shepard?

  It warps space and time.

• 1:12:12Speaker 03

Yeah, if we could Chris Nolan that moment.

• 1:12:14Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:12:14Speaker 03

So it's race weekend. I had practiced in my mind, driving the track.

• 1:12:18Dax Shepard?

  This is stressful.

• 1:12:19Speaker 01

  I know.

• 1:12:20Speaker 03

I don't want to spin out because if we spin out, we go off the track. And I'd taken a few misadventures. So I don't want to lose the car. And it's the fans. So I'd practiced in my mind, people in the stands and just hitting my breaking points. Practice, practice, practice, practice. And so when we got there, I just told myself the last minute, just have fun. And it was such a joy.

• 1:12:39Dax Shepard?

  Was it?

• 1:12:40Speaker 03

Yeah, but I'm going to break 10 yards earlier just to make sure I'm not going to get on it hard coming out. Because again, this is our first attempt. And then the next day, we're shooting on the grid. National anthem, we're off to the side.

• 1:12:53Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:12:53Speaker 03

The main feed cuts us out. You just see the drivers, but it's me, Dampson, Max and Checo and then Leclerc. And I'm almost embarrassed because I have such reverence for these guys, this sport. And here's this jackass actor standing at the end like he knows what he's doing.

• 1:13:09Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:13:09Speaker 03

So I just had to swallow that. I'm like, we got to do it. And there's this real energy because we have 10 minutes to get back to our cars. And then have a little scene there with Javier Bardem and Tobias. And then we got to get in the car. So we do that two takes, we get off the grid and they're lining up for the start of the race, for the warm up lap. And then our cars, one's going to go. It's already choreographed where he's going to peel off. And we had two great drivers with us. We couldn't have done it without them. Luciano Bocchetta, he was F2 champion and then Craig Dolby. They're in the cars, we're not doing this part. And one of our cars does not start, the one that's supposed to take off.

• 1:13:44Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:13:45Speaker 03

But they had already had plans for that. If it didn't, guys came running out, push it off the track and everything went.

• 1:13:50Speaker 01

  Oh, wow.

• 1:13:51Speaker 03

And so then we were in and running, but then we went on strike the next day.

• 1:13:54Dax Shepard?

I was going to say, you have this triumphant, fuck, this movie's going to work.

• 1:13:58Speaker 03

We got it, we're in, and then we went on strike on the Monday.

• 1:14:01Speaker 01

  Oh, fuck.

• 1:14:02Speaker 03

  It was such a.

• 1:14:04Speaker 01

  Let down.

• 1:14:05Speaker 03

I was just bumping into walls. It was such a high.

• 1:14:07Dax Shepard?

And you had to do a unique thing on this, which is the movie has to be insured. If something goes wrong, there's so much money on the line that someone's got to insure that. And they've never insured a movie and let the actors drive 180 miles an hour.

• 1:14:18Speaker 03

No, this was Steve McQueen's problem filming Le Mans the last week. He was supposed to drive in the race and insurance stepped in at the last said, uh uh, we lose you, there's no movie.

• 1:14:28Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:14:29Speaker 03

Our movie was predicated on us being on the track and driving.

• 1:14:33Dax Shepard?

Did you personally have to explain to them like, look, these cars don't work till 180?

• 1:14:37Speaker 03

This is a really good point. This happened because we're hitting speeds. We're running with 100 kilograms of extra weight because we got camera gear. We got to get a block camera here. I got a camera here where I can't see brake points, turning points.

• 1:14:48Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 1:14:49Speaker 03

Or it's on here and one over here. Sometimes they'd be a big camera up here, which would diffuse all your downforce on the back, the rear, so you'd be sliding out. And we don't have power steering because we're on an F2 that's been chopped and stretched and aeroed. We're in Abu Dhabi and we've been getting away with a lot. And insurance got hip to it and they came in, they said, speed limit, 140. And it actually, in these cars, it becomes more dangerous. You don't have heat in the tires. You don't have heat in the brakes. And they actually become undrivable and unstoppable.

• 1:15:17Dax Shepard?

You're not creating the downforce, so you can't go through the turns.

• 1:15:21Speaker 03

This thing would go off and I would just ignore it and we would go. And the guys, especially Luch and Craig, put together a case for the insurance to show them this is actually more dangerous. It is actually safer to go at 180 and brakes and get the heat in as we need than keep us down at 140. So it took three or four weeks of negotiations and we got there.

• 1:15:42Dax Shepard?

I watch F1 and I am deeply humbled by, I know that you have to believe this car is creating so much downforce that yes, you can turn right at Silverstone in seventh gear going 190 miles an hour. And that's a leap of faith.

• 1:15:56Speaker 03

  It's shocking.

• 1:15:57Dax Shepard?

Yeah. So what was your curve?

• 1:15:59Speaker 03

The first time I got in, I just could not believe you could take corners at these speeds and the car would stick. Every impulse is to get off the gas, but you do that, you destabilize.

• 1:16:11Speaker 01

  Ah.

• 1:16:12Speaker 03

You'll go wide, then you'll go off. The track, so you actually need to stay on it. They say if you're not on the gas or you're not on the brake, you're not driving the car and you're upsetting the car. I just kept saying, trust the car, trust the car. I had this mantra going in my head. This is week one and then the braking capabilities are shocking.

• 1:16:27Dax Shepard?

Now, what they do kind of defies physics.

• 1:16:30Speaker 03

Yeah, they call an upside down airplane, don't they?

• 1:16:32Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah, yeah.

• 1:16:33Speaker 01

When you're driving it, you can't be in character, right? Cause you have to be so focused on.

• 1:16:38Speaker 03

We do the scenes, but we're also in a helmet like this. So if you fuck up the lines.

• 1:16:41Speaker 01

Yes. How are you doing that?

• 1:16:42Speaker 03

And we're getting to drive and we can actually use our side view mirrors. So that leads to the authenticity of it all. But you asked about downforce.

• 1:16:50Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:16:51Speaker 03

I don't know how to explain it. It's the greatest feeling. You want to go roller coaster, but no, that's not it. Because you feel the fulcrum under you and a roller coaster is on corners. I was in an aerobatic plane once and guy took me for a ride. That'd be the closest thing, I think. It is a high, I just can't wait to do it again.

• 1:17:06Dax Shepard?

Yeah, what's so great is these cameras are fucking mounted on the car in such a way. And Joe can control them and we're seeing you and you're almost blueprinted to think, oh yeah, he's on the green screen and we're watching him. And then it's just a fluid fucking pan and oh no, we're going 180. And there's the other cars. It's so intense and novel. It's really a technological kind of accomplishment.

• 1:17:29Speaker 03

Yeah, I think so too. It's really visceral.

• 1:17:31Speaker 01

Yeah, it's interesting to hear that it was tech first almost. That was what started this whole thing.

• 1:17:36Dax Shepard?

Tell me about you go out to a track. I think you're at a Porsche training center and there's a GT three and you get to go out for a bit and Lewis is there and then he takes you for a ride.

• 1:17:45Speaker 03

This is after the controversial 21 finish.

• 1:17:48Dax Shepard?

This is the only time I felt some stress between you and I.

• 1:17:51Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:17:52Dax Shepard?

  Cause I love Max.

• 1:17:53Speaker 03

  Who's undeniably so damn good.

• 1:17:56Dax Shepard?

Especially this year in a shit car.

• 1:17:57Speaker 03

Oh my God, he's incredible. But yeah, I've been in a few arguments over that one.

• 1:18:01Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:18:02Speaker 03

So this is the first time he's been on a track since that controversial end where he loses the title. I just feel like an idiot. He's getting in the car with me, so I'm not going to even try to push. I know lines from being on the bike and on the track and understand trail braking and when to get back on the fuel, the throttle and all that. And that felt good, but I was just.

• 1:18:20Dax Shepard?

Oh, I was feeling such an idiot.

• 1:18:22Speaker 03

Yeah. But then I got in with him and it's this bit on the track where it's just a straight way. And then it's got this, what do they call it? The carousel and it's just one of these banked things and it's walled. And the guy says, take it easy going out. Give him Lewis instructions. There's a bump, it can really unsettle you.

• 1:18:37Speaker 01

  Oh God.

• 1:18:38Speaker 03

He just takes off, we hit the bumper, we're going, going, we hit this corkscrew. He comes sliding up around and the back end kicks out. Now we're in the gravel and inches from a wall and he comes out and he's just laughing his ass off.

• 1:18:49Dax Shepard?

  He loves it.

• 1:18:49Speaker 03

These guys have such control of this car.

• 1:18:52Dax Shepard?

They're at the very max and they have control.

• 1:18:54Speaker 03

You know, he came in, we're getting close to the final cut and he is so detailed. He would come in and go, no, no, no, that's the wrong gear. You're turned 11, you need to be in fifth by sound.

• 1:19:04Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:19:05Speaker 03

Wow. Cause we're in an F2 car, so we gotta redo the sound for it to sound like an F1 car. He would go down the straight, there's this reverb that comes off the left wall. You need to add that in. What knowledge.

• 1:19:15Dax Shepard?

Have you ever seen these videos where they just put headphones on the drivers? And they play the audio from the car. And these guys within about 30 seconds will go spa. Have you seen them do that?

• 1:19:28Speaker 03

  No.

• 1:19:29Dax Shepard?

There's many videos of them doing this. They can tell just from the audio. Oh, it was third gear, then fourth, then third real quick. They'll name the track.

• 1:19:37Speaker 01

Did you get to do all the tracks?

• 1:19:39Speaker 03

No, we drove spa, we drove Cota, we drove Vegas. That was weird and sketchy and wet and cold and slippery. Just sketchy. And we got no rehearsal on it and we just had to go out and we had our one 15 minute window. 10, I think even. Sketchy.

• 1:19:55Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, slippery, right?

• 1:19:57Speaker 03

And not only that, there are points in it where you're braking on a curb. It's just odd, technical.

• 1:20:03Dax Shepard?

  I went.

• 1:20:04Speaker 03

Wait, wait, wait, I want to brag some more.

• 1:20:05Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, please, please, please.

• 1:20:06Speaker 03

  Abu Dhabi.

• 1:20:07Dax Shepard?

Oh, yes, because this is where the GQ guy was at.

• 1:20:09Speaker 03

  Silverstone.

• 1:20:10Dax Shepard?

What about Abu Dhabi? Cause it's night.

• 1:20:12Speaker 03

Amazing, goes from day, dusk, night.

• 1:20:14Dax Shepard?

Oh, I'm so fucking jealous. The fact that for your job, you had to go drive all these tracks.

• 1:20:19Speaker 03

  You should be.

• 1:20:20Dax Shepard?

  You should hate me.

• 1:20:21Speaker 03

No, this one I will rub in.

• 1:20:23Speaker 01

I can see how lit up you are about this. This is so fun, both of you.

• 1:20:26Dax Shepard?

I'm hard as a rock for the listener.

• 1:20:28Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, slight shove over here.

• 1:20:31Speaker 01

We have so many actors in here and they're. Artsy for the most part. That's why they got into it. Do you sometimes feel like an outsider amongst all these artsy actors? Cause you're their peers, but you're also this guy.

• 1:20:47Speaker 03

  And by not artsy?

• 1:20:48Speaker 01

  You are artsy.

• 1:20:49Speaker 03

Right after I went right into a man and a dog survival story out in the wilderness of New Zealand.

• 1:20:54Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:20:55Speaker 03

So I'm trying to mix it up.

• 1:20:57Speaker 01

You're doing both, but this part of the conversation is the happiest you've been in the whole conversation. Let's be real about that.

• 1:21:02Speaker 03

No doubt. And we could go on for another few hours, you know? We'll wrap this thing up and we'll still be at it.

• 1:21:06Speaker 01

  I know you will.

• 1:21:07Dax Shepard?

I want to add some, there's so many rad things about the movie. The fact that all the real teams are there.

• 1:21:13Speaker 03

  Is that insane?

• 1:21:13Dax Shepard?

You're in shots with Charles Leclerc.

• 1:21:15Speaker 03

We could not do it without them and we had to go into the drivers' meeting and make our case. And of course they're going to be suspect of us. What are we going to do? How Hollywood is it going to be? Who are you going to make the bad guys Ferrari or Red Bull like? Cause you have Lewis, you're going to make us, you know? Didn't know what this thing was going to be and little by little, we made our pitch. I think they understood our respect and told them, we're going to be here in the race weekends. Wherever you're away, tell us to fuck off. I have no problem fucking off. We know how to do that.

• 1:21:42Dax Shepard?

I'm quite good at fucking off.

• 1:21:44Speaker 03

At first, certainly at the weekend, I felt like a tourist who had no right to be there. By the end of it, we'd been so integrated into the old ecosystem of it all. Just having laughs with the guys and we could not have done it without their participation, without the teams. Toto's in it. Fred's in it. Yes. All the team bosses are in it. I mean, this production value, there were $30 million cars and their entire teams for the whole pit lane. And they gave us an hour. They pulled out their cars. They all came in, worked on it. I mean, it was unbelievable. The whole F1, Stefano and his team. I think once we proved ourselves, they were super accommodating.

• 1:22:22Dax Shepard?

I've talked to some of these dudes. They're pumped. They like it.

• 1:22:24Speaker 03

  And they're all in it.

• 1:22:25Dax Shepard?

There's only a single completely unbelievable part of the whole movie.

• 1:22:28Speaker 03

  Go.

• 1:22:28Dax Shepard?

And it's when Toto offers the kid a ride on Mercedes and he says, no thanks. I'm like, bullshit. Everyone wants to drive for Mercedes.

• 1:22:37Speaker 03

  Had to get Toto in.

• 1:22:38Speaker 01

  We love Toto.

• 1:22:40Dax Shepard?

We had so much fun. I've never encouraged you to watch anything that I've done, but I text you like, you gotta watch Toto on the, but he's so playful.

• 1:22:48Speaker 01

  So playful.

• 1:22:49Speaker 03

Yeah, he's really charming. I didn't watch it, by the way.

• 1:22:51Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, I know, I know.

• 1:22:52Speaker 03

  I'll get there.

• 1:22:53Dax Shepard?

You're smart. You know I'm an approval junkie, so you withhold enough to keep me on the hook.

• 1:22:57Speaker 01

He has to get through eight viewings of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood first.

• 1:23:01Dax Shepard?

The only thing we've done a bad job at is the premise of the movie, which is fantastic. We meet you and you are driving in an endurance race. You're one of the drivers, 24 hours of Daytona.

• 1:23:11Speaker 03

  In a Porsche GT3.

• 1:23:12Dax Shepard?

And you come out, you've gotten the lead before, then the other drivers lose the lead. You come up, you get them back in the lead, you get out of the car and you're like, don't fucking lose this lead. This guy's like a fucking has been, but he's a genius. He's still incredible.

• 1:23:25Speaker 01

  Very Good Will Hunting.

• 1:23:26Dax Shepard?

Yeah. So you're obviously an insanely good driver, but you're kind of a fucking renegade and a vagabond. And then you get approached by Javier Bardem.

• 1:23:34Speaker 03

  Yeah, the great Javier Bardem.

• 1:23:36Speaker 01

  Oh my God.

• 1:23:37Speaker 03

Can that man wear a suit? Dear lord. He'll be my number two.

• 1:23:40Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's a good pick.

• 1:23:42Speaker 03

Yeah. He's so good and such a beautiful guy. He, Penelope, his whole family, they're just beautiful people. When you watch a movie, one scene makes the cut, or some kind of amalgamation of one scene makes the cut. But this guy, take after take, he's just doing different things. And any one of them, you could throw up there. And it was so fun to watch. That's the other side of being behind the making.

• 1:24:02Dax Shepard?

These Spaniards too, they have like an art of living, where you're attracted to his whole thing.

• 1:24:09Speaker 03

Europeans, certainly more than Americans, they carve out more time for enjoyment of life than we do.

• 1:24:13Dax Shepard?

Yeah, they know how to get in the fucking judge.

• 1:24:15Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:24:16Dax Shepard?

Okay, so he approaches you. He is the owner of this terrible team at F1. And he's in the situation where he has to win a single race or he's going to lose control of the team. And he's got this incredible rookie driver. Dampson Ingers is a rookie.

• 1:24:28Speaker 03

Young phenom, but he's just got to get reeled in a bit.

• 1:24:32Dax Shepard?

This is great. This is Bull Durham.

• 1:24:33Speaker 03

Bull Durham is probably the closest connection where two guys have to work together who are at odds through the whole movie. And that's the fun we have.

• 1:24:40Dax Shepard?

Yeah, it's a great, great relationship.

• 1:24:42Speaker 03

  He's a gem, man.

• 1:24:43Dax Shepard?

  Snowfall, that's where he's from. He's cocky.

• 1:24:45Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:24:46Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, I like cocky.

• 1:24:47Speaker 03

Yeah. That he enjoys this whole parade in a way I never knew how I admire that about him. But on the court, he's in on the joke. He doesn't mind being the brunt or he'll give it back. He's really well rounded.

• 1:24:59Dax Shepard?

Well, it's spectacular. You guys did it. You made the most realistic racing movie that's ever been made. You're fucking radical. Okay, I'm gonna end on this. You said, no, I met you before the meeting and you did. And I'm gonna tell you when you wouldn't remember, but I don't think you know the punchline of the story and I think you'll get a kick out of it. So we're at the Academy Awards, Kristen and I, I've never been and I go to take a squirt and she knows you're my number one. You're like three rows ahead of us. We're coming back to the seat and as I'm getting close to her, she's mouthing something to me. I'm like, what? And I hear, he's talking to you. And I go, what?

• 1:25:40Dax Shepard?

Brad Pitt is talking to you. I'm like, what? Brad Pitt's talking to me and I fucking turn around and you're standing up and you go, we loved your movie.

• 1:25:54Speaker 03

  Right.

• 1:25:54Dax Shepard?

And you're talking about hit and run, but I lose my shit. I don't really remember that I've directed a movie at that point. I'm just like, oh, thank you. And you're like, yeah, we loved it. It was so nice.

• 1:26:06Speaker 03

You know, if you see people up on screen, you still recognize your people.

• 1:26:09Dax Shepard?

And I'm doing a hundred percent of the driving in that movie and you know, as someone who does these things, like I'm in shots you can't be in unless you're sideways.

• 1:26:16Speaker 03

Just a down home, more country vibe that you just recognize your people in Ireland, New Zealand.

• 1:26:24Dax Shepard?

So you're standing up at the Academy Awards shouting to me, we loved your movie. So then I sit down and this is the punchline. You don't know about the second after you said that, the very next thing that happened was they started the in memoriam.

• 1:26:41Dax Shepard?

And I'm sitting down and I'm like this. I'm so happy that Kristen goes, honey, stop fucking smiling.

• 1:26:53Dax Shepard?

And I couldn't not talk about things I also want the outtakes of. If there's any camera on me during that in memoriam.

• 1:26:59Speaker 01

  You almost got him canceled.

• 1:27:01Dax Shepard?

I would have been escorted out of the business. I've never been happier watching this group of dead people be celebrated.

• 1:27:10Dax Shepard?

So that was the punchline that you missed from that exchange.

• 1:27:13Speaker 03

That's a highlight of your life.

• 1:27:14Dax Shepard?

I love that shit. I love big fails. I'm so grateful that you did this. Thank you, man. I really appreciate it.

• 1:27:21Speaker 03

I so appreciate what you guys do and this is the one I got to. I didn't have a choice, did I?

• 1:27:25Speaker 01

  You did not.

• 1:27:26Speaker 03

I mean, we've been talking about wheels. I mean, I think it enters every conversation we ever have.

• 1:27:31Speaker 01

  That's awesome.

• 1:27:32Speaker 03

  Something about wheels.

• 1:27:33Dax Shepard?

It's inexhaustible. F1 is out June 27th. Don't listen to me because I wouldn't trust me. I love everything with engines that you put gas in, but listen to Kristen. Kristen fucking loved it.

• 1:27:43Speaker 03

  And it's fucking titties.

• 1:27:45Dax Shepard?

It's fucking titties. Put it on the poster. You can quote me. It can be on the poster. It's fucking titties, Dax Shepard. All right, brother. See you soon.

• 1:27:54Speaker 03

  Thank you both. Love you.

• 1:27:56Speaker 04

He is an arm care expert, but he makes mistakes all the time. Thank God Monica's here. She's gonna let him have the facts.

• 1:28:05Dax Shepard?

We had a fun run in this weekend.

• 1:28:08Speaker 01

  Yeah, we did.

• 1:28:09Dax Shepard?

Delta and Aaron and I went over to Mustard Seed.

• 1:28:12Speaker 01

  Cafe. That's a cafe nearby.

• 1:28:14Dax Shepard?

Which I've recently become all renewed obsessed with.

• 1:28:17Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 1:28:18Dax Shepard?

Cause they got a, they got a dish for me in there that is, it couldn't be more perfect.

• 1:28:21Speaker 01

  Describe.

• 1:28:22Dax Shepard?

Broccoli, egg whites, I add capers.

• 1:28:25Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:28:26Dax Shepard?

So broccoli, egg whites with capers.

• 1:28:29Speaker 01

  Scramble?

• 1:28:30Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:28:30Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:28:31Dax Shepard?

  Turkey patty.

• 1:28:32Speaker 01

  On the side?

• 1:28:33Dax Shepard?

This is all one dish, you know, one plate.

• 1:28:35Speaker 01

Right, but is, is it, is the egg on top of the patty separate?

• 1:28:39Dax Shepard?

Everything's separated on one plate. And I get this rumalod sauce, which I don't know if I'm saying that correctly, but. I have a whole history with this, which is I thought they made just a special sauce at that place that was their signature proprietary sauce and I was obsessed with it. And then I was there recently and she said, oh, we just ran the like somehow she said like the bottle just ran out and I was like, oh, they're buying it. So then I went home and I searched, that's a popular Cajun sauce. Do you know about remoulade?

• 1:29:07Speaker 01

Remoulade, yeah, they have one at Houston's.

• 1:29:10Dax Shepard?

Oh, it's got horseradish in it, some kind of stuff that I think is fishy, but I, I don't focus on that.

• 1:29:16Speaker 01

  Sure, probably anchovy.

• 1:29:18Dax Shepard?

Tartar sauce. Tar, yeah, there's just maybe some cocktail-y type sauce vibes. Does cocktail sauce have fish in it or just you combine it with fish so often that I've associated it with fish?

• 1:29:31Speaker 01

You combine it, but it does have horseradish often.

• 1:29:33Dax Shepard?

  But no fish in it?

• 1:29:34Speaker 01

It might have anchovy. A lot of things that are tasty have anchovy. You wouldn't know it though.

• 1:29:40Dax Shepard?

Earmark that, Ewan McGregor on his motorcycle show, he eats so much fish paste and I'm just like, he's so much, he's so much more manly than me. I can't eat fish paste.

• 1:29:50Speaker 01

I want you to try it.

• 1:29:53Dax Shepard?

Nothing sounds worse to me than fish. I already don't like fish in its original form.

• 1:29:57Speaker 01

That's what you think. Remember we talked about this on a previous episode where you've been to a restaurant and you were like, I don't like any of these things and then you like it.

• 1:30:06Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah, French Laundry. If, if the French Laundry had a fish paste, I would try it, but they're getting it at a gas station in a tube and they're gobbling it up. Anyways, remoulade sauce ordered, it was great. I'm there getting that wonderful breakfast. I think it's called the lean plate there. And I see you and your tall gentleman friend.

• 1:30:28Speaker 01

  Jess.

• 1:30:30Dax Shepard?

Stroll by, you pass through frame.

• 1:30:32Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:30:33Dax Shepard?

  I'm facing the window.

• 1:30:34Speaker 01

  Okay, you were inside?

• 1:30:35Dax Shepard?

Yeah, eating and I said, Delte Monty just walked by.

• 1:30:40Dax Shepard?

And so she ran out, flagged you down.

• 1:30:42Speaker 01

Ran out. It was such a fun pop out. By then I was past, I was at Maru.

• 1:30:47Dax Shepard?

I was tempted to also run out, but then I had this thing where it's like, it was, we had already eaten. I, I really felt like it was gonna look like we were running out on the check.

• 1:30:55Speaker 01

  Dine and dash.

• 1:30:56Dax Shepard?

Dine and dash. Uh, there's another couple of good terms for it. But of course that they wouldn't have thought that because I'm a regular customer there and they know I'm a nice person. But anyways, that, that stopped me. But then you guys were en route to the protest.

• 1:31:09Speaker 01

Yeah, we went to the rally in Los Feliz on Saturday. No Kings rally.

• 1:31:14Dax Shepard?

No Kings, but definitely short Kings. We'll get to that.

• 1:31:17Speaker 01

No, not if they're trying to be monarchs.

• 1:31:20Dax Shepard?

No, just, I like all the boys that have been getting short King love. So you guys are still good. Um.

• 1:31:25Speaker 01

  Not Napoleon.

• 1:31:29Speaker 01

  See?

• 1:31:30Dax Shepard?

  He took it too far.

• 1:31:31Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:31:31Dax Shepard?

Yeah. He wasn't just getting some dates. He wanted to take over the world. So then I said, where did they say they were at? Let's go look. And then en route to there, we saw you guys. We shouted at you. You're probably already on edge because you were going to a protest. I thought the cops were there. Yeah, we had a very fun run in and you guys looked so excited and yeah.

• 1:31:56Speaker 01

We were excited. It all happened very fast.

• 1:31:58Dax Shepard?

  Okay, tell me.

• 1:31:59Speaker 01

I told, I think also on the last fact check, maybe or a couple of fact checks ago, was saying that I've been pretty overwhelmed by social media.

• 1:32:07Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:32:07Speaker 01

So I was, I kind of wasn't paying much attention to it. Um, and so I didn't know, I didn't know there was like a bit, a day where the country was protesting.

• 1:32:18Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:32:19Speaker 01

  Trump's birthday.

• 1:32:19Dax Shepard?

Yeah, you would only find out on social media, right?

• 1:32:21Speaker 01

  I would. I mean, I don't, I also didn't.

• 1:32:23Dax Shepard?

  You don't watch the news.

• 1:32:24Speaker 01

Exactly. Yeah. So, um, Jess texted me in the morning, or he texted me and he said, there's a no Kings rally happening in Los Feliz right now. And I was like, we should go.

• 1:32:37Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:32:38Speaker 01

And I was already on my walk.

• 1:32:40Dax Shepard?

  Okay, great.

• 1:32:41Speaker 01

So it worked out and he was like, okay, let me just like finish a couple of things. And then next thing he knew, two minutes later, I was at his door. Knock, knock, knock. And he said, oh, wow. Okay. Yeah. I guess where we are going.

• 1:32:54Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:32:54Speaker 01

And so he put on his sunscreen and his tall socks.

• 1:32:58Dax Shepard?

  Ah, yeah.

• 1:32:59Speaker 01

And off we went. And we walked there and we ran into you and it was a lovely run in. And it was so, it was so, so fun to.

• 1:33:08Dax Shepard?

  Pause for one second.

• 1:33:10Speaker 01

Right. Yeah. So it's almost as if I planned that.

• 1:33:14Dax Shepard?

  Planned the whole rally?

• 1:33:16Speaker 01

No, just now you had to step out because there was a dog barking a lot. It is almost as if I planned that because I, I have a, I want to talk about something about dogs.

• 1:33:26Dax Shepard?

  Oh, okay, okay.

• 1:33:27Speaker 01

First, let's finish up the rally.

• 1:33:28Dax Shepard?

Okay. I thought maybe he like farted while I was gone or something.

• 1:33:31Speaker 01

  No.

• 1:33:32Dax Shepard?

It feels like a great place to meet a lover.

• 1:33:35Speaker 01

I mean, sure, like minded people. I, I could see that, but that really wasn't on our mind.

• 1:33:40Dax Shepard?

And I had a good party vibe. Like I drove through it.

• 1:33:42Speaker 01

  It was.

• 1:33:42Dax Shepard?

Yeah, it felt very much like a parade kind of a vibe.

• 1:33:45Speaker 01

It did. And that was one thing about it that I will comment on. It was very, um, heartwarming.

• 1:33:53Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah. That's what it felt like. As we were driving through, there's also so much to look at. There's so many signs. Everyone's got to put a spin on their thing.

• 1:34:00Speaker 01

  There's some fun ones.

• 1:34:01Dax Shepard?

There was really fun ones. There was really, there were some we disagreed with.

• 1:34:06Speaker 01

Okay, what did you disagree with?

• 1:34:07Dax Shepard?

Well, we said, one of them, it was, this man had done a very, a beautiful oil painting of Trump. And it said, this man has never had a friend. And I said, well, that's, that's, he's assuming quite a bit. He seems to know a lot about that. And then we were, then we were making up signs, the three of us of stuff like you couldn't really know, like.

• 1:34:32Dax Shepard?

He stubbed his toe in second grade on the way to the pool. Well, that was your, your claim that you knew.

• 1:34:38Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:34:41Speaker 01

  I.

• 1:34:41Dax Shepard?

And then there was really clever.

• 1:34:43Speaker 01

There was so, there were really, really funny ones. A lot of plays on the word ice, which I found very, very fun.

• 1:34:50Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:34:50Speaker 01

I did really like the one that was, that said, you were worried about the cost of eggs, but what about the cost of ice?

• 1:34:59Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh, yeah.

• 1:35:00Speaker 01

Yeah, there were some great ones. A lot of dictator, but D I C K.

• 1:35:05Dax Shepard?

  Oh, sure.

• 1:35:06Speaker 01

  That's a fun one.

• 1:35:06Dax Shepard?

  That's fun, yeah.

• 1:35:08Speaker 01

  Anyway.

• 1:35:08Dax Shepard?

  Everyone got playful.

• 1:35:09Speaker 01

Everyone got really playful and it was a, it was a happy environment.

• 1:35:15Dax Shepard?

  Yep.

• 1:35:15Speaker 01

There, it was, it was, it was kind of emotional. Like, there were some, um, people, you know, there was this like young boy with this like Mexican flag and it was really sweet. It was very, it's like, yeah, that's what we're doing this for.

• 1:35:30Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:35:31Speaker 01

Um, anyway, uh, it was heartwarming and I'm really, really glad that we went.

• 1:35:36Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:35:36Speaker 01

And what I also like about it is it's not, it's not for the purp-, like, it's, it's to show up and say, we don't like what's going on.

• 1:35:48Dax Shepard?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:35:48Speaker 01

It's not active in that, like, it's not a vote, you know, that's what really is gonna make a difference.

• 1:35:53Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 1:35:54Speaker 01

But it, it's solidarity and it's like, look, you're not alone.

• 1:35:58Dax Shepard?

  Yep.

• 1:35:59Speaker 01

People are here to support you, whatever. So, anyway, it was lovely. We did that. And then we went to the Beverly Hills Hotel and had a martini.

• 1:36:08Dax Shepard?

  Oh, wonderful.

• 1:36:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:36:11Dax Shepard?

  Very classy of you.

• 1:36:13Speaker 01

Uh huh. Um, okay, now, pivoting.

• 1:36:17Dax Shepard?

  Yes, dogs.

• 1:36:18Speaker 01

You know, I've taken a break from speaking ill of dogs.

• 1:36:22Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yes, yeah.

• 1:36:23Speaker 01

  Cause people don't like it.

• 1:36:24Dax Shepard?

  No, they hate it, yeah.

• 1:36:25Speaker 01

And I know, I get it. Like, I get that you love your dogs. But I have a, I had a, I had a resurgence of annoyance for them this weekend. And it was a one-two punch, okay? So.

• 1:36:40Dax Shepard?

I'm so sorry. I just thought of a very funny analogy. You're just like, Chappelle just couldn't stay away from trans.

• 1:36:47Speaker 01

  I know.

• 1:36:48Dax Shepard?

It kept, it kept just pulling, even when he was saying.

• 1:36:51Speaker 01

  I know.

• 1:36:51Dax Shepard?

It's not gonna be about trans and then it is.

• 1:36:53Speaker 01

And he knows, like, this isn't gonna go well.

• 1:36:55Dax Shepard?

Yes, and he just, he can't resist.

• 1:36:57Speaker 01

Yeah, that's how I feel. So, I almost texted you Saturday night because I need you to pass along a really important message for me.

• 1:37:06Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:37:07Speaker 01

  To Amy Poehler.

• 1:37:08Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:37:08Speaker 01

  Okay, Babers.

• 1:37:10Dax Shepard?

  Babers, AKA Babers.

• 1:37:11Speaker 01

AKA Babers. Amy has an awesome podcast, new podcast, new-ish, uh, called Good Hang, and.

• 1:37:19Speaker 01

She had Dakota Johnson on her podcast.

• 1:37:22Dax Shepard?

Who you're obsessed with, people should know.

• 1:37:24Speaker 01

I am currently a bit obsessed with Dakota Johnson. I've been going down real rabbit holes. It started because obviously I do watch a lot of, not obviously, but I watch a lot of Vogue videos.

• 1:37:38Dax Shepard?

You know, obviously was the right word.

• 1:37:40Speaker 01

Yeah, I watch a lot of Vogue videos and there's a lot of like, get ready for this red carpet or get ready for this, whatever.

• 1:37:47Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:37:48Speaker 01

So I'm served a lot of that content. So I was served Dakota Johnson getting ready for Cannes.

• 1:37:53Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:37:54Speaker 01

And I love her, the dress she wore, it's a Gucci dress, pink fringe, sequined silk. Gorgeous. Okay?

• 1:38:03Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 1:38:04Speaker 01

So I was obsessed with the dress. So I was like watching that and then once that happened, it's all I'm getting.

• 1:38:10Dax Shepard?

  Auto load.

• 1:38:11Speaker 01

Yes. And then I saw a Vanity Fair.

• 1:38:15Dax Shepard?

  Is she Melanie Griffith?

• 1:38:16Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:38:16Dax Shepard?

  And Don Johnson's daughter?

• 1:38:18Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:38:19Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:38:19Speaker 01

And she, um, she notoriously is, has kind of wild press.

• 1:38:27Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 1:38:28Speaker 01

  Uh, tours.

• 1:38:29Dax Shepard?

  Oh, I didn't know this.

• 1:38:31Speaker 01

Yes. She, she has some controversial press tours.

• 1:38:36Dax Shepard?

  Political opinions or?

• 1:38:38Speaker 01

Like, okay, so she was in Madame Web and it was like a whole thing because she was pretty much shitting on it the whole time.

• 1:38:45Dax Shepard?

  What's Madame Web?

• 1:38:46Speaker 01

  It was some movie.

• 1:38:48Dax Shepard?

  It was a movie.

• 1:38:48Speaker 01

  Superhero. Superhero.

• 1:38:50Dax Shepard?

Okay. And she did a bad job.

• 1:38:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:38:52Dax Shepard?

  Speaking favorably about the product.

• 1:38:54Speaker 01

  Correct.

• 1:38:54Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, okay.

• 1:38:55Speaker 01

And it was a whole thing.

• 1:38:56Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:38:56Speaker 01

  And I, I will be.

• 1:38:57Dax Shepard?

So she's a liability on a press tour.

• 1:38:59Speaker 01

I will be honest, during the Madame Web thing, I was like, I just think if you're in a movie, it's part of your job. You got paid to be in that movie. You gotta.

• 1:39:09Dax Shepard?

  It's too late.

• 1:39:09Speaker 01

  It's too late.

• 1:39:10Dax Shepard?

Sometimes they turn out good, sometimes they turn out bad.

• 1:39:12Speaker 01

You kind of got to stand by it unless you were like abused or something.

• 1:39:15Dax Shepard?

Sure. You gotta go down with the ship.

• 1:39:17Speaker 01

Yeah. So anyway, so I had this idea about her based on Madame Web and Callie loves Dakota Johnson.

• 1:39:24Dax Shepard?

  Okay, great.

• 1:39:25Speaker 01

And Dakota is her kind of girl crush.

• 1:39:29Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:29Speaker 01

And, and I was always like, I don't really get it.

• 1:39:32Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:32Speaker 01

  And now I get it.

• 1:39:33Dax Shepard?

  You get it.

• 1:39:34Speaker 01

  Now I totally get it.

• 1:39:35Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:39:35Speaker 01

And I have been wanting to get her on this show because of my new obsession with her.

• 1:39:42Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:42Speaker 01

Also because I saw Vanity Fair lie detector test she did and she doesn't know a lot like that I found interesting like she didn't they slid a picture of Alex Earl and also Alex Cooper ding ding ding Alex Cooper's episode came out today great episode uh great conversation anyway um she didn't know who they were but she was like oh for Alex Earl she was like oh is it call her daddy

• 1:40:11Dax Shepard?

  Okay

• 1:40:11Speaker 01

And they were like no and then they showed that picture and she was like this is a different person like she didn't she doesn't know a lot about pop culture

• 1:40:19Dax Shepard?

  Okay great

• 1:40:19Speaker 01

I find all this kind of interesting

• 1:40:21Dax Shepard?

Yes and it feels authentic to you yeah

• 1:40:23Speaker 01

It does feel authentic to me um and anywho so I've been sort of obsessed with her and I've been I've been trying to get her on it can't happen and all of a sudden I see her pop up on Good Hang

• 1:40:36Dax Shepard?

  Oh okay

• 1:40:37Speaker 01

So I have mixed feelings about this right

• 1:40:39Dax Shepard?

  Yeah yeah yeah

• 1:40:40Speaker 01

I'll be honest I was like fuck

• 1:40:43Dax Shepard?

  Yeah sure

• 1:40:44Speaker 01

  I wanted her

• 1:40:45Dax Shepard?

  Yeah

• 1:40:46Speaker 01

But I love Amy so of course next best thing

• 1:40:48Dax Shepard?

  Yeah

• 1:40:49Speaker 01

And I I turn it on and um Dakota has her dog with her Tokyo very very cute dog

• 1:40:59Dax Shepard?

  Yeah

• 1:40:59Speaker 01

But this interview is happening oh and I will say she Dakota said she has never done a podcast that was her first podcast ever

• 1:41:05Dax Shepard?

  Okay

• 1:41:06Speaker 01

She doesn't she's kind of afraid of them

• 1:41:08Dax Shepard?

Never heard of a podcast until that moment

• 1:41:09Speaker 01

Afraid of them and she felt she'd be safe with

• 1:41:12Dax Shepard?

  Yeah

• 1:41:13Speaker 01

Anyway the dog was really taking up a lot of the conversation for the first chunk and I could feel

• 1:41:24Dax Shepard?

Talking about the dog or the dog was being rambunctious and they were having to corral he or she

• 1:41:29Speaker 01

Mainly talking about the dog talking about the dog but the dog was like drinking water out of the cup and then they had to address that the dog was drinking water out of the cup you know It was just very dog centered

• 1:41:40Dax Shepard?

  Yes yes

• 1:41:41Speaker 01

And Amy said you know she has a no dogs at work policy

• 1:41:48Dax Shepard?

Oh she does that must be very controversial

• 1:41:50Speaker 01

And I have I mean I I didn't think I could love her more but my god did I feel so seen and and loved I felt loved

• 1:42:02Dax Shepard?

  Okay, great.

• 1:42:03Speaker 01

And I want you to tell her that.

• 1:42:04Dax Shepard?

  I'll tell her that.

• 1:42:05Speaker 01

Please, um, pass along the message that I felt stressed on her behalf.

• 1:42:10Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 1:42:11Speaker 01

That the dog was, and it wasn't anyone's fault, especially not the dog's fault.

• 1:42:16Dax Shepard?

Yeah, he's not supposed to be at a podcast, he's supposed to be in the woods.

• 1:42:19Speaker 01

Correct. He was really cute, actually. Anyway, whatever. It, Tokyo was commandeering the conversation and I could feel like, if that was us, I would be a little like,

• 1:42:33Dax Shepard?

  You'd lose it.

• 1:42:34Speaker 01

We need this dog to get out of here.

• 1:42:36Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, cuz you get.

• 1:42:37Speaker 01

  There's, there's Tokyo.

• 1:42:39Dax Shepard?

Wonderful. Tokyo looks like a puppy. Like, if she also, she brought a puppy?

• 1:42:43Speaker 01

I think, and actually, to be fair, Tokyo was very well behaved. Tokyo just fell asleep in her lap pretty quickly after that sipping of the water.

• 1:42:52Dax Shepard?

  Wow.

• 1:42:53Speaker 01

Anywho, so I, uh, I just really respect Amy's policy.

• 1:42:58Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 1:42:59Speaker 01

And, um, and then, God, I'm gonna get in trouble for this.

• 1:43:05Dax Shepard?

  That's okay.

• 1:43:06Speaker 01

From my friend, so I feel bad, but I, I have to say it.

• 1:43:10Dax Shepard?

  Morally, you feel obligated.

• 1:43:12Speaker 01

I do. I'm watching this on Sunday. I feel like Amy's a hero for handling Tokyo so well, but also stating her boundary, but not sticking by her boundary. Okay? It's mixed.

• 1:43:24Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:43:24Speaker 01

  And.

• 1:43:25Dax Shepard?

She gets a C on that part.

• 1:43:28Speaker 01

I go to Anna's house, and Anna has a dog who we love. Mona, Mona, we love Mona.

• 1:43:36Dax Shepard?

Just saying this morning, I wish Mona was my dog.

• 1:43:38Speaker 01

  Mona is a great dog.

• 1:43:40Dax Shepard?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:43:41Speaker 01

And Jess and I went over there to, she got a new apartment, we were gonna see her new apartment, and then we were gonna go on a walk. And as we were getting ready to go, I was like, is Mona coming? Because I could sense that Mona was gonna come with us, okay? And, um, last time we went out, she also came.

• 1:43:59Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 1:44:00Speaker 01

And I, I, I'm very hyper aware when we're out at a restaurant and we have Mona. Also, Mona's huge.

• 1:44:08Dax Shepard?

  Mona's gigantic. Yeah.

• 1:44:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:44:10Dax Shepard?

  She's a.

• 1:44:11Speaker 01

  And she's in people's biz.

• 1:44:13Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, she's like a puppy.

• 1:44:14Speaker 01

  She thinks she's a puppy.

• 1:44:16Dax Shepard?

Yeah, but she's a big girl, like a horse.

• 1:44:18Speaker 01

Look, we are in LA. A lot of people are like totally fine standard.

• 1:44:22Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:44:22Speaker 01

People are fine with it, but I'm like, Mona is in that person's lap and they're trying to eat and they're strangers. So I already had this last week and then here we are again.

• 1:44:32Dax Shepard?

With the dark. Well, I think it is Mona, by the way. I think the same offender.

• 1:44:36Speaker 01

  It is.

• 1:44:36Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, that was barking.

• 1:44:38Speaker 01

  It is.

• 1:44:38Dax Shepard?

Yeah, cuz Anna brings Mona to work.

• 1:44:40Speaker 01

  Yeah, I know.

• 1:44:44Speaker 01

  So then we're.

• 1:44:44Dax Shepard?

But I love Mona. I love Mona.

• 1:44:46Speaker 01

  I do too.

• 1:44:47Dax Shepard?

Cuz Anna was really nervous that to bring Mona to work cuz I cuz of me. And it took me telling her like a thousand times, like, I love Mona. I don't mind seeing her in the backyard.

• 1:44:57Speaker 01

You've been very kind. I keep thinking like, what if someone has an allergy? And then at one point Mona got on the seat. Even if you're not allergic, you might not wanna step over a dog.

• 1:45:07Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:45:08Speaker 01

You might not wanna sit on dog hair. And she did it up on the the furniture and then someone did come over and say like, we can't have her on the furniture. And I I, you know, as someone who is a rule follower in general, and I think maybe that's.

• 1:45:24Dax Shepard?

  You don't want attention.

• 1:45:25Speaker 01

  I don't want attention.

• 1:45:27Dax Shepard?

That's really what it all is. It's all about attention.

• 1:45:29Speaker 01

I don't want attention for something that I fundamentally feel like we're getting in, we're in people's way. I don't like that. Yeah, I really don't like inconveniencing people.

• 1:45:41Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:45:41Speaker 01

  It feels selfish.

• 1:45:42Dax Shepard?

Well, it's very tricky for the dog owner because

• 1:45:46Dax Shepard?

a huge percentage of the city loves it.

• 1:45:48Speaker 01

  I know.

• 1:45:49Dax Shepard?

They genuinely love it. Kristen's happier when she runs into a dog at a restaurant or she's got to step over one. Like, it improves her day.

• 1:45:56Speaker 01

But she doesn't bring her dogs out.

• 1:45:59Dax Shepard?

Nope. Ours are assholes, though. They would bite people. But we used to bring Lola around. Lola was cool to take to a restaurant and stuff. If we were gonna sit outside at like, ding ding ding, mustard seed, she ate there a lot. For the dog owner, they're running into tons of people that are so excited to meet their dog.

• 1:46:15Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:46:16Dax Shepard?

And then the people who are don't enjoy it are not saying anything, nor should they.

• 1:46:22Speaker 01

Why? See, this is what's unfair.

• 1:46:25Dax Shepard?

Well, I'll tell you why. Because. It's small. You have the choice and overall you should go things giving this group of people a lot of joy. I don't like it. I can live with it. I think, I think it's definitely the aspirational version is to just let it be without it bothering you. I think Buddhism, I can't get you, but maybe Buddhism.

• 1:46:50Speaker 01

  It feels unfair to me.

• 1:46:51Dax Shepard?

So I recognize they, they might not be fully aware of how much people, but, but, but I would urge the people, you have to acknowledge you're bringing an animal somewhere. Like the, the restaurants and our transportation, they were designed for humans. You throw up, there's not like parking for dogs at restaurants under the table.

• 1:47:15Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 1:47:16Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:47:17Speaker 01

Or on podcasts and stuff, or at work if you're Amy.

• 1:47:20Dax Shepard?

Although we gotta be honest, we loved having Nico.

• 1:47:23Speaker 01

I know, but Nico, that's a different thing. Nico. Service dog. No, Rob, no. This is also, it's like everyone's just calling them service dogs. That's crazy. You know what my service need is? No barking.

• 1:47:41Dax Shepard?

No dogs and barking and funny. Listen, yes, at the aforementioned thing, these two, so one person with a fricking boxer, another with a pit bull and they're, they're both insisting the dogs are nice. They're not nice. They get no fight in the doorway.

• 1:47:54Speaker 01

They're all barking and causing a scene and making people sort of trip. And like, I don't, I don't, I'm fine with it. I guess. I mean, I'm not, but I am, I have to be in this world, but I want some, instead of me being the enemy, I'd love some acknowledgement that like people who don't like dogs are constantly just dealing with dogs.

• 1:48:19Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:48:21Speaker 01

  All the time.

• 1:48:23Dax Shepard?

  In LA.

• 1:48:23Speaker 01

And they don't get to say anything or they're bad.

• 1:48:26Dax Shepard?

I don't know what it's like other places. I feel like LA would, would trend towards the liberal.

• 1:48:31Speaker 01

  Definitely.

• 1:48:32Dax Shepard?

Maybe crazies would be like Portland, where you, I imagine.

• 1:48:38Speaker 01

Yeah, they're like up on the counter.

• 1:48:40Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah, like they they get seated and everyone's got their.

• 1:48:44Speaker 01

Well, you said that you went to a pet store, pet store.

• 1:48:49Dax Shepard?

Oh, yeah, yeah, I picked up food and delivered to a dog recently.

• 1:48:53Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:48:54Dax Shepard?

  For my other job.

• 1:48:54Speaker 01

  This is outrageous.

• 1:48:56Dax Shepard?

Want to hear about Father's Day?

• 1:48:58Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:48:59Dax Shepard?

You know, um, the tradition at this house is on Mother's Day, moms get to have a spa day and the dads take the kids away. So you're pretty much in our house, I think in our pod, if it's your Father's Day or your Mother's Day, you get an indulgent day.

• 1:49:16Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:49:16Dax Shepard?

  Right?

• 1:49:17Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 1:49:18Dax Shepard?

So mine was, we had just had a guest on, it was one of my funniest favorite moments we've had. Back to me loving being embarrassed. It's a male guest and myself. We come upon the topic of The Godfather.

• 1:49:34Dax Shepard?

And then we start, the male guest and I start talking about Godfather. And now we're starting to explain to you some things about Godfather. And it hit me all at once. I was like, oh, my God, we're Ken from Barbie.

• 1:49:48Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:49:48Dax Shepard?

Oh, my God, was that funny? It was so, we already have been made fun of about it.

• 1:49:53Speaker 01

  I know.

• 1:49:53Dax Shepard?

  And we still did it.

• 1:49:54Speaker 01

  You couldn't stop yourself.

• 1:49:56Dax Shepard?

Oh, my God, that's so funny.

• 1:49:59Speaker 01

  Yeah, it was very funny.

• 1:50:01Dax Shepard?

So then, um, I decided, oh, I am in the mood to watch Godfather. I haven't in 15 or 20 years.

• 1:50:08Speaker 01

Yeah, we made a group plan to watch it with this guest who doesn't live in the city. So it's going to take some real planning.

• 1:50:15Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:50:16Speaker 01

Um, and but you couldn't wait, so you had to watch it on Father's.

• 1:50:19Dax Shepard?

Well, and I would watch it again next week for sure. If everyone wants to get together. But yes, I had, um, two other fathers over and we, I ordered a ton of Italian food.

• 1:50:28Speaker 01

  Oh, nice.

• 1:50:29Dax Shepard?

  Really good Italian food.

• 1:50:30Speaker 01

  Ooh, yum.

• 1:50:31Dax Shepard?

And, uh, watch Godfather and it was a blast.

• 1:50:34Speaker 01

  Both?

• 1:50:35Dax Shepard?

No, no, that was the goal. Can't be done. It's like three hours long and we were pausing to go make plates and we were making a lot of jokes. It was very fun.

• 1:50:44Speaker 01

  Good.

• 1:50:47Dax Shepard?

But then it was kind of early on the early side. It's five. I still have a bunch of leverage. They're basically like, what do you want to do, Dad? And I said, well, um, if, if everyone's up for it, I, I would want everyone to be up for it. I would love to watch a movie together as a family. Let's grab something from the kids list. I keep a list in my phone, kids movies, Romancing the Stone. These movies that I, I know they'll like.

• 1:51:14Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:51:15Dax Shepard?

Oh, Pirates of the Caribbean, that was recently. And so I said to the family, so yeah, something off the kids list. So I was thinking either Rocky or Smokey and the Bandit. And Chris goes, when did Rocky get on the kids movie list? And I was like, oh, I added it.

• 1:51:35Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 1:51:35Dax Shepard?

Because we were watching Friday Night Lights and I was like, oh yeah, these sports stories are really simple. You know what the goal is and you know the stakes.

• 1:51:42Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:51:42Dax Shepard?

And Rocky was either one best pitcher. It was certainly nominated for best pitcher. It's like an incredible movie. We all watched Rocky. It is a great movie.

• 1:51:50Speaker 01

  It holds up?

• 1:51:51Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:51:52Speaker 01

  Great.

• 1:51:52Dax Shepard?

Yeah, there's so much cool stuff about it. The fact that he, you know the whole story behind Rocky?

• 1:51:56Speaker 01

Um, yeah, he paid for the movie.

• 1:51:58Dax Shepard?

No, he, he had been, he was completely penniless. He wanted to play Rocky and he turned down a million dollars in 1974 for a screenplay.

• 1:52:08Speaker 01

And do you know why I know that?

• 1:52:10Dax Shepard?

  Uh, boy.

• 1:52:11Speaker 01

  Good Will Hunting.

• 1:52:12Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 1:52:13Speaker 01

  They referenced that a lot.

• 1:52:14Dax Shepard?

They do. So you're watching this guy that really gambled it all.

• 1:52:19Speaker 01

  And it worked out.

• 1:52:20Dax Shepard?

And it worked out like as big as could work out. He was the biggest star for 15 or 20 years. But anyways, I felt like I really, I was FaceTiming with my father-in-law. And when I told him what the day was, Godfather, and now we're watching Rocky. He just started laughing so hard. And I said, my powers are so strong today, aren't they? I've convinced everyone to watch Rocky.

• 1:52:45Speaker 01

  Yeah. Good Father's Day.

• 1:52:47Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:52:49Speaker 01

  Did the kids like it?

• 1:52:50Dax Shepard?

They did. They loved it. Yeah, they really, really loved it. Um, there's weird stuff. There's really compelling stuff you have to talk about as a family, which I loved because have you ever seen it?

• 1:53:00Speaker 01

  I don't think so.

• 1:53:01Dax Shepard?

He's not smart. This is one of the things I like about it. Like, he wrote himself this role and it's so not vain. Like Rocky is a simple guy. He has to carry his combination to his locker that he's had for six years in his hat, written on a piece of paper. Like, he's very simple.

• 1:53:16Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:53:16Dax Shepard?

And Adrian works at a pet shop and she's like morbidly shy.

• 1:53:21Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:53:21Dax Shepard?

And Rocky knows her brother and he keeps trying to date her. He keeps going to the, the, uh, pet store and she's just too shy to deal with it. And, um, he eventually goes on a date with her and then they, they have this date and then he's, they're at his house and he's like, come inside. And she's like, no, I don't want to come inside, Rocky. He's like, come on, come inside, come inside, you're gonna like it. And she says no like six times, right?

• 1:53:47Speaker 01

  Oh, boy. Okay, yeah.

• 1:53:49Dax Shepard?

So you're watching this with your kids and you're like, wow, well, this wouldn't be a scene today. Let's start there.

• 1:53:53Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 1:53:54Dax Shepard?

And so she says no, she says no, she says no. Then she says yes. Then she comes in and then she wants to leave and he doesn't want her to leave. And at this point, we will now pause to talk about this.

• 1:54:07Speaker 01

  Mm hmm.

• 1:54:08Dax Shepard?

And I said, so number one, a woman should never go into a place she doesn't want to go into. She should not have to. Number two, any guy who would not listen to a woman, say no three times and keep pushing her to come in is off the table, is a no-no.

• 1:54:24Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:54:24Dax Shepard?

Three, she is morbidly shy. She's not gonna get to this point ever if some super assertive man doesn't come in and invite her to cross her fear.

• 1:54:39Speaker 01

  Mm hmm.

• 1:54:41Dax Shepard?

  And in her total life.

• 1:54:44Dax Shepard?

That's also maybe what she needed for her life. Isn't that complex? What do we do with that reality?

• 1:54:52Speaker 01

Mm hmm. It's complex, but it is.

• 1:54:56Speaker 01

It's an invisible line, but it, there is a line and I think you gutturally know it.

• 1:55:03Dax Shepard?

Yeah, it's interesting because I said, you know, the analogy I gave them is like, Jackie did not, Jackie was in love with our dog Glenn. We needed to get rid of Glenn. She was in love with him and would not take him because she had such commitment anxiety. And I literally at one point had to shove him in her hands and I shut the door and locked it and said, you're taking him home for the night.

• 1:55:26Speaker 01

  Story complicated, actually.

• 1:55:28Dax Shepard?

And it's the love of her life. She thanked me a bunch of times for forcing her to take it. And I knew what would happen the second she got the dog home.

• 1:55:37Speaker 01

That's the part, it's the part I knew.

• 1:55:40Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:55:41Speaker 01

  That is complicated.

• 1:55:43Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:55:44Speaker 01

  And because.

• 1:55:45Dax Shepard?

You hope you're a good judge.

• 1:55:46Speaker 01

You know what I mean? You, you were in that case, right?

• 1:55:50Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:55:50Speaker 01

But there is no knowing about what a person will or won't feel.

• 1:55:56Dax Shepard?

So do you, do you risk never helping the nine people that are that, that are, you're right about? To prevent the one person you're wrong about?

• 1:56:05Speaker 01

I actually think, yeah, personally, I think if Jackie's gonna let the commitment issue derail her life, it's not really on you to change it.

• 1:56:15Dax Shepard?

It's not, but we're, we're, we're, we're attracted innately to people that we think can get us someplace that can benefit us.

• 1:56:26Speaker 01

  Uh, sure.

• 1:56:27Dax Shepard?

Like, you know, like a lot of betas are, they're super attracted to alphas because that they desire someone who doesn't have decision anxiety.

• 1:56:37Speaker 01

Yeah, but that's different from, from forcing you to make a decision. You might, you can be attracted to someone's self-assuredness and confidence and their ability to make decisions. And that is attractive if you aren't good at that. I don't think, I, I think. But that then, then it crossing over onto you is where. That is different to me because I think if you're attracted to that, what ends up happening is you sort of take some of it on by osmosis. Like you like it, you're seeing it modeled.

• 1:57:07Dax Shepard?

  Mm hmm.

• 1:57:08Speaker 01

And it looks cool. It looks good. You start, you know, you start trying those pieces on.

• 1:57:14Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:57:15Speaker 01

But the forcing is where things get muddy for me.

• 1:57:21Dax Shepard?

Right. And then you're talking about the like the nuance between forcing and pushing.

• 1:57:29Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:57:30Dax Shepard?

There's like, there, there's a difference in my mind between forcing and pushing. Like people do, some people want to be pushed.

• 1:57:39Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:57:39Dax Shepard?

They want to be helped and pushed in a direction.

• 1:57:42Speaker 01

  Mm hmm.

• 1:57:42Dax Shepard?

Do they want to be forced? They don't have a decision. No, I don't think so. But I do think people seek out people they know will push them. Some people love coaches. Like I'm not this type of person.

• 1:57:52Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:57:52Dax Shepard?

But there are people that love being coached.

• 1:57:54Speaker 01

  Mm hmm.

• 1:57:55Dax Shepard?

Love being pushed and yelled at and the whole nine. That's not me.

• 1:57:59Speaker 01

Yeah, I think it, God, though, it's so dependent on the person, the scenario.

• 1:58:03Dax Shepard?

Well, it's dependent on the outcome because like for Adrienne, she undoubtedly would, if you asked her, she would go, thank God he made me come inside and thank God he didn't let me leave.

• 1:58:15Speaker 01

  Cause it worked out.

• 1:58:16Dax Shepard?

Because, yeah, she would have never, ever come out of her, her shell unless someone drug her out. And then she, she was so happy and loved Rocky so much. That's, that's wonderfully complicated.

• 1:58:29Speaker 01

  Very complicated, yes.

• 1:58:30Dax Shepard?

I love it. Like what a fun thing to hear their opinions about.

• 1:58:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:58:34Dax Shepard?

Yeah. So it delivered in a lot of ways.

• 1:58:37Speaker 01

  Great.

• 1:58:37Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:58:38Speaker 01

  That's fun.

• 1:58:39Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:58:39Speaker 01

Well, I'm glad you had a good Father's Day.

• 1:58:42Dax Shepard?

  Oh, thank you. Me too.

• 1:58:44Speaker 01

  Fathers are fun.

• 1:58:45Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, they can be.

• 1:58:46Speaker 01

Talked to my dad on Father's Day, doing good.

• 1:58:50Dax Shepard?

  Was he spoiling himself?

• 1:58:51Speaker 01

  No, he, he had exercised.

• 1:58:54Dax Shepard?

  Oh, he did.

• 1:58:55Speaker 01

When I called him, he exercises every day.

• 1:58:56Dax Shepard?

  Oh, good.

• 1:58:57Speaker 01

  He's very disciplined.

• 1:58:59Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:58:59Speaker 01

  Extremely disciplined.

• 1:59:00Dax Shepard?

  What's his chosen exercise?

• 1:59:02Speaker 01

  What do you think?

• 1:59:04Dax Shepard?

  Naps?

• 1:59:05Speaker 01

He doesn't nap. I've never seen him nap in my entire life.

• 1:59:08Dax Shepard?

  What do I think?

• 1:59:10Speaker 01

  Knowing me.

• 1:59:11Dax Shepard?

  Jogging.

• 1:59:12Speaker 01

  Walking.

• 1:59:13Dax Shepard?

  Walking.

• 1:59:13Speaker 01

  He goes on long walks.

• 1:59:15Dax Shepard?

  Ploter, ploter.

• 1:59:16Speaker 01

  Outside and on the treadmill.

• 1:59:18Dax Shepard?

  Mm hmm.

• 1:59:19Speaker 01

  Wow, I like dads.

• 1:59:21Dax Shepard?

Yeah, me too. Uh, you wanna do some facts?

• 1:59:24Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 1:59:24Dax Shepard?

  Let's do it.

• 1:59:39Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:59:41Dax Shepard?

  Wow.

• 1:59:42Speaker 01

Brad Pitt facts. Who would have thunk that sentence could possibly come out of my mouth?

• 1:59:48Dax Shepard?

I'm a little scared for us.

• 1:59:50Speaker 01

  Like we'll die.

• 1:59:52Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, just like.

• 1:59:53Speaker 01

  It's too good.

• 1:59:54Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:59:55Speaker 01

  Life's too good.

• 1:59:56Dax Shepard?

  This is suspiciously good.

• 1:59:58Speaker 01

There's some real suspicious stuff because that day, the day we recorded Brad, we also recorded an episode, super suspicious that it happened to be on that day, the subject matter. And I'm not gonna say what it is yet, but when that episode comes out.

• 2:00:13Dax Shepard?

  You're gonna protect us.

• 2:00:14Speaker 01

Okay, fine. It's on the simulation.

• 2:00:15Dax Shepard?

It's on the sim, guys. What are the odds of the day that we have the sim, then BP walks in? Your dad's getting playful.

• 2:00:22Speaker 01

I don't know if he's getting playful or if we are gonna die and he's like, let's give him a lot of good stuff before they die.

• 2:00:27Dax Shepard?

Let's go out big. Let's throw Pitt their way. Let's throw a sim expert.

• 2:00:32Speaker 01

I'm getting scared talking about it. What a dream. What a dream.

• 2:00:36Dax Shepard?

I said it to you. I've said it a couple of times. I wanna say it in public. I appreciated you so much in that interview. You did the perfect job. Um, I was just really, really grateful for the way you just handled the whole two hour bacchanalia.

• 2:00:55Speaker 01

  Thank you.

• 2:00:56Dax Shepard?

There were moments where you could feel that I probably value being on his good side enough that maybe there's like a next emotional question I would normally follow up with that I was incapable of at times.

• 2:01:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:01:11Dax Shepard?

And right as I was thinking like, oh, I should ask that. I can't. I'm afraid to ask that. Then you would come. It was, it was every time I ever thought that, you immediately kinda were there to do that.

• 2:01:22Speaker 01

  Oh, that's nice.

• 2:01:23Dax Shepard?

And that was awesome. You also were like, um, you knew it was a big day for me. I could see the generosity in your spirit. And then also you would click out of it and go like, no time to make the donuts. And you'd make the donuts and you'd hang back. And then, and then beyond actually all that stuff that was for me selfishly, I was filled with such joy, sincerely.

• 2:01:48Dax Shepard?

That the little girl that was afraid to talk in front of Mike Schur was sitting across from Brad Pitt and letting it rip.

• 2:01:56Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:01:56Dax Shepard?

I just felt so proud of you and happy for you.

• 2:02:00Speaker 01

  Thanks.

• 2:02:00Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:02:01Speaker 01

Yeah, we've come a really long way. We really have.

• 2:02:04Dax Shepard?

You were so competent. I just was really happy for how competent you were.

• 2:02:08Speaker 01

  Well, BTS.

• 2:02:10Dax Shepard?

You had shit yourself three or four times.

• 2:02:12Speaker 01

Yeah, I had already unloaded. No, I had a whole morning, you know, where I had to talk to myself.

• 2:02:20Dax Shepard?

  You know, steady yourself.

• 2:02:22Speaker 01

Yes, about expectations and knowing it was him and knowing

• 2:02:30Speaker 01

that there was a chance that I really wasn't gonna.

• 2:02:37Speaker 01

It's hard to, that I, I might not be able to say much. I could feel myself when I would think about that, getting upset.

• 2:02:46Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:02:47Speaker 01

Like, I should be able to say stuff and I am gonna.

• 2:02:51Dax Shepard?

  I'm big enough.

• 2:02:52Speaker 01

Yeah, and I'm gonna do it. But also, I'm not, like, I doubt there's gonna be space and how will I, how, you know, and it was starting to happen and then I had to really like take a second and, and, and say, like, this is a big, this is such a big deal for us, not just you, for us.

• 2:03:15Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 2:03:15Speaker 01

As a show. And it's kind of like the thing, it's kind of like before Matt Damon, when me and you were in a fight and you said, don't let this fight.

• 2:03:26Dax Shepard?

  Fuck up your big day.

• 2:03:27Speaker 01

Get in the way of this moment.

• 2:03:29Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 2:03:30Speaker 01

And you need to be present for this moment.

• 2:03:32Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:03:32Speaker 01

And I, I've sort of circled back to that, like, this is just a big day for us and it is a big marker of the show and it's something to be proud of regardless of what I singularly do. So, and just enjoy it and be excited. And, and also because.

• 2:03:56Speaker 01

I guess, you know, making, not having space was highly possible because this is your dream guest. This is what you've sort of been looking forward to for seven and a half years.

• 2:04:10Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 2:04:10Speaker 01

And you guys also have a shorthand, you know each other.

• 2:04:14Dax Shepard?

  Hmm.

• 2:04:15Speaker 01

Um, it would have made, kind of, kind of. So anyway, I was then very, very grateful that it did not feel like that at all. It felt like there was plenty of space for me. It did not feel like you were like, if I spoke, you were like tensing up.

• 2:04:33Dax Shepard?

Yeah, we're off story. I have a whole arc plan.

• 2:04:36Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:04:37Dax Shepard?

Well, I was having my own ruminations in the morning, as one would have. And I, yeah, my thing was like, uh, you gotta prioritize the audience and not you.

• 2:04:48Speaker 01

  Mm hmm, mm hmm.

• 2:04:50Dax Shepard?

Cause recently I did prioritize me hanging with a guest. And we left and I was like, I could have, I could have gotten a lot more out of that person. That would have been more rewarding for the audience, but I was definitely, I had prioritized my own experience. I was like, so we can't do that today, Dax.

• 2:05:09Speaker 01

  Dax Shepard.

• 2:05:11Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I had a whole laundry list. I had, at that point, I'd watched enough interviews with them. I saw him and Adam Sandler talking for an hour and a half. And what I saw immediately is like, he is so fucking allergic to you saying he's good and stuff. Like, he just doesn't like it.

• 2:05:23Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 2:05:24Dax Shepard?

So I'm like, oh, I gotta get through two hours with this guy and not fawn over him.

• 2:05:28Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:05:29Dax Shepard?

That's a deal breaker. Cause I had a lot of deal breakers going in.

• 2:05:33Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 2:05:33Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:05:34Speaker 01

  Well, it went great.

• 2:05:36Dax Shepard?

But, and I'll, I'll just, I'll credit and thank him. He showed up like so cash, feeling good.

• 2:05:43Speaker 01

  Relaxed.

• 2:05:43Dax Shepard?

He put us at ease nicely.

• 2:05:45Speaker 01

He did. He really did. He's such a nice guy.

• 2:05:48Dax Shepard?

  He is.

• 2:05:49Speaker 01

And it was great and we all had fun.

• 2:05:51Dax Shepard?

We had a ton of fun.

• 2:05:53Speaker 01

  That's all we can ask.

• 2:05:54Dax Shepard?

Yeah. I wanted him to stay forever, but he had to carry on and promote this.

• 2:05:59Speaker 01

We kept him way past the amount of time we were supposed to and.

• 2:06:03Dax Shepard?

Yeah, that was another thing I was, I was like, I was juggling in my head. I'm like 90 minutes. I don't know. I'm gonna have to read him and see if he's cool going over.

• 2:06:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:06:11Dax Shepard?

Did we blow by that 90? We didn't look back.

• 2:06:13Speaker 01

We kept on going. Um, okay, the one thing that I. So before he came, we were getting kind of worked up into a lather.

• 2:06:24Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 2:06:25Speaker 01

  Like really feeling.

• 2:06:26Dax Shepard?

Well, this will remain a mystery. So I text him like 14 minutes before he was to arrive. Hey, this is the gate code. If you want to just pull right in.

• 2:06:37Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:06:38Dax Shepard?

And then he wrote like, bueno.

• 2:06:40Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:06:40Dax Shepard?

And then he wrote, oh, is that today? And I wrote, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. But then I'm like, I don't know if that's ha, ha, ha.

• 2:06:47Speaker 01

  I know. We don't know.

• 2:06:48Dax Shepard?

  We don't know.

• 2:06:49Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:06:50Dax Shepard?

But suffice to say, we did have 10 minutes while we were waiting for him to get here, where we were just sitting.

• 2:06:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:06:55Dax Shepard?

Waiting to do the thing we've been thinking about all day long. And for me, three weeks, maybe.

• 2:06:59Speaker 01

  Yeah, our whole lives.

• 2:07:01Dax Shepard?

  Yes, yes.

• 2:07:01Speaker 01

But so then when he walked in, you, you went out and you got him and then you guys walked in. And I, you know, I get up to go introduce myself. And this part's embarrassing. I was gonna cut it, but I left it so people can see it if they want to. I like stuck my hand out to shake his hand. And he, his hands were like full.

• 2:07:27Dax Shepard?

  I missed that part.

• 2:07:28Speaker 01

So he like had to like kind of put down his coffee and he had, and he was like, oh, my hands are wet. And so I, but I just had my hand out straight.

• 2:07:38Dax Shepard?

  You weren't moving it.

• 2:07:39Speaker 01

For the whole time all this was happening. And I thought, put your hand, but then you have to put it back up. So just leave it.

• 2:07:45Dax Shepard?

Yeah, this is the stress. And then I yelled at you for not hugging him.

• 2:07:52Speaker 01

  You did?

• 2:07:53Dax Shepard?

  I think that's in there.

• 2:07:54Speaker 01

  I didn't even hear that.

• 2:07:55Dax Shepard?

  No, that was with another.

• 2:07:57Speaker 01

  That was with another heartthrob.

• 2:07:59Dax Shepard?

And then you hugged him at the end.

• 2:08:00Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:08:01Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 2:08:01Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 2:08:02Dax Shepard?

But then you hugged Brad at the end, too.

• 2:08:04Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:08:04Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:08:04Speaker 01

Anyway, so that was bad. That was the worst part, the handout.

• 2:08:10Dax Shepard?

  Hmm, rough start.

• 2:08:11Speaker 01

Yep, but then it, then it was fine.

• 2:08:13Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:08:14Speaker 01

Then he was just a regular old boy.

• 2:08:16Dax Shepard?

What did you say though? You said something, then you go, oh, this is off the wrong, on the wrong foot.

• 2:08:21Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:08:21Dax Shepard?

You came hot, you came hot. What was it?

• 2:08:22Speaker 01

No, I said, I said, I stepped in it already.

• 2:08:26Dax Shepard?

Yeah, do you remember what it was about?

• 2:08:27Speaker 01

Yes, I do. And actually, it leads into my first fact.

• 2:08:30Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:08:30Speaker 01

So the first fact is you asked if he was wearing a waffle.

• 2:08:35Dax Shepard?

  Oh, waffle shirt.

• 2:08:37Speaker 01

He's wearing his brand God's True Cashmere, which you're also wearing. And I actively did not wear. I have the shorts. They're so cute. Um, and I actively did not wear that. But, uh, that's like when I was with Gwyneth and like, I didn't wear goop on purpose.

• 2:08:54Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:08:55Speaker 01

  Um, it's that move.

• 2:08:57Dax Shepard?

  Yeah. Your famous move.

• 2:08:59Speaker 01

It's like one of my moves. So he's wearing, I'm pretty sure, so I'm on the site right now. And I think he's wearing the Cerulean Melange Cashmere Shirt. It is not a ruffle, a waffle ruffle. It's not a waffle.

• 2:09:18Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:09:19Speaker 01

I think that's the one. It's either that one or the Azure Cashmere Shirt.

• 2:09:25Dax Shepard?

  Hmm.

• 2:09:26Speaker 01

Now, no one's gonna like this. Both of those are sold out.

• 2:09:32Dax Shepard?

  Ah, yeah.

• 2:09:34Speaker 01

Anyway, if you want to look like me, my shorts are the...

• 2:09:40Dax Shepard?

I love the origin story of God's True Cashmere.

• 2:09:43Speaker 01

Emerald dot Cashmere Surf Shirt is what I have, and it is so cute. What happened is he was telling the explanation of God's True Cashmere. And I said, oh, I thought like, I think the assumption is it's you.

• 2:09:57Dax Shepard?

  That you're the God.

• 2:09:58Speaker 01

And he was like, what? He did not like that.

• 2:10:01Dax Shepard?

No, I was like, well, I know he hates compliments if he gets told he's God.

• 2:10:06Speaker 01

But it was, but it was, I thought it was sweet because his shock and horror.

• 2:10:11Dax Shepard?

That he would do something like that.

• 2:10:12Speaker 01

That anyone would think that was actually very endearing.

• 2:10:15Dax Shepard?

  I agree.

• 2:10:16Speaker 01

  So.

• 2:10:17Dax Shepard?

  It was worth it.

• 2:10:17Speaker 01

And I did think that. And I just had to be honest.

• 2:10:20Dax Shepard?

I appreciate your honesty. I did not think that.

• 2:10:24Speaker 01

  Well.

• 2:10:24Dax Shepard?

  For whatever reason.

• 2:10:25Speaker 01

  You were right, for once.

• 2:10:27Dax Shepard?

  You.

• 2:10:31Speaker 01

He mentioned that maybe Robert Downey Jr. Was wearing a zoot suit.

• 2:10:38Dax Shepard?

  Hmm hmm.

• 2:10:40Speaker 01

And because it said weird science.

• 2:10:42Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:10:42Speaker 01

But actually, the term zoot suit is primarily associated with Robert Downey Sr.'s film Greaser's Palace.

• 2:10:50Dax Shepard?

  About zoot suit guys.

• 2:10:51Speaker 01

  I guess.

• 2:10:52Dax Shepard?

Do you know about zoot suits?

• 2:10:53Speaker 01

It says he didn't wear a zoot suit in Weird Science.

• 2:10:56Dax Shepard?

Do you know what a zoot suit is?

• 2:10:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:10:57Dax Shepard?

Okay, right. And like LA gangsters wore zoot suits.

• 2:11:01Speaker 01

Yeah, we learned about them, I don't know why, in college. The suits were first associated with African Americans and communities such as Harlem, Chicago, and Detroit in the 30s, but were made popular nationwide by jazz and jump blues musicians in the 40s. Okay, in the movie adaptation, the ghost orchid.

• 2:11:21Dax Shepard?

  The ghost orchid.

• 2:11:22Speaker 01

  Is the flower.

• 2:11:23Dax Shepard?

  Hmm.

• 2:11:25Speaker 01

It says, "The film uses the idea of finding your flower, your soulmate, or passion as a metaphor for life's journey."

• 2:11:31Dax Shepard?

That's an incredible movie. I don't know when the last time you watched that is.

• 2:11:34Speaker 01

I don't know if I've ever seen it.

• 2:11:36Dax Shepard?

It's exceptional, but what's so great is, in the same way I love Fall Guy, it's like acknowledging the meta reality that they're in a movie, making a movie, trying to figure out the story of the movie. It's just so satisfying.

• 2:11:50Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 2:11:51Dax Shepard?

And he is reading this very famous writing book, how to, called Story, the most famous screenwriting book there is. It's like the bible.

• 2:12:02Speaker 01

Oh, is it like Save the Cat?

• 2:12:04Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:12:05Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 2:12:05Dax Shepard?

Yeah, so he is struggling to write a script

• 2:12:11Dax Shepard?

about this orchid hunter, and the movie's about him trying to figure out how to write this script. And he has a twin brother who's like a hack, and he goes to a story book convention.

• 2:12:23Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 2:12:24Dax Shepard?

And he's like, "Oh, it's so easy to write," and he's like getting stuff sold.

• 2:12:27Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 2:12:28Dax Shepard?

And it's like, it's, it's talking about all the rules in story as it's breaking the rules in story, which is really fun.

• 2:12:35Speaker 01

  That is great.

• 2:12:36Dax Shepard?

Yeah, it's very, very meta in the most satisfying way.

• 2:12:39Speaker 01

  Oh, I love that.

• 2:12:40Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:12:41Speaker 01

Okay, um, the Harlem Globetrotters, the original Harlem Globetrotters, founded in 1926.

• 2:12:47Dax Shepard?

Oh, I guess he didn't meet the originals.

• 2:12:48Speaker 01

Exactly, that's what I'm, unfortunately, he needs.

• 2:12:52Dax Shepard?

  He needs to know.

• 2:12:53Speaker 01

Although he mentioned Curly and Curly's in this mix and he's from 1942, born in 1942.

• 2:13:01Dax Shepard?

I think I mentioned Curly and I think the characters recycled. I think new basketball players came in, but these roles that the Harlem Globetrotters had, I think they might have recycled.

• 2:13:12Speaker 01

What? No, his name is Curly Neal.

• 2:13:14Dax Shepard?

Yeah. And when I was a kid, there was a Curly as well that was in the Harlem Globetrotters.

• 2:13:19Speaker 01

  Really?

• 2:13:19Dax Shepard?

  I'm pretty sure.

• 2:13:20Speaker 01

It said the first lineup included players like Walter Toots Wright, Byron Fatlong, Willis Kid Oliver, Andy Washington and Al Run- Pullins.

• 2:13:32Dax Shepard?

Hmm. There's nothing in there about the characters.

• 2:13:34Speaker 01

  Frederick Curly Neal.

• 2:13:36Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:13:37Speaker 05

I don't know. There was only one.

• 2:13:39Dax Shepard?

Okay. It's weird. I knew that one.

• 2:13:42Speaker 05

  Played for 22 seasons.

• 2:13:44Speaker 01

  Sweet Lou Dunbar.

• 2:13:46Dax Shepard?

Well, I think I know Sweet Lou.

• 2:13:47Speaker 01

I think he maybe mentioned Sweet Lou. Mainly Curly and Sweet Lou and a bunch of others.

• 2:13:55Dax Shepard?

They were kind of gone by the time you were on the scene.

• 2:13:57Speaker 01

  I've heard of them.

• 2:13:58Dax Shepard?

Yeah. There would be ads all over when they came to your city. It'd be a big deal.

• 2:14:01Speaker 01

Cause they did like tricks and stuff, right?

• 2:14:04Dax Shepard?

Yeah. And they always played the same team and it's like big time wrestling, but with basketball.

• 2:14:09Speaker 01

Yeah, that's fun. Um, that's it.

• 2:14:13Dax Shepard?

  That's everything?

• 2:14:14Speaker 01

So Brad Pitt, done? Noah Wiley? Not done yet.

• 2:14:19Dax Shepard?

  Not done yet.

• 2:14:19Speaker 01

  But hopefully.

• 2:14:20Dax Shepard?

  Mick Cage still out there.

• 2:14:22Speaker 01

Yeah, we have, we still, we still got some. We still got good old Tay.

• 2:14:27Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:14:27Speaker 01

She's always gonna be on the hook.

• 2:14:29Dax Shepard?

  Jay-Z.

• 2:14:30Speaker 01

  That's right.

• 2:14:31Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Okay. Thanks to all those people.

• 2:14:33Speaker 01

Yeah. Thanks for keeping us going. Um, all right. Love you.

• 2:14:38Dax Shepard?

  Love you.
