We're going to talk about some cool stuff today. We're going to talk about how he almost lost the part in Clueless because he had a bad haircut. We're going to talk about how dumb comedy is our favorite kind of comedy, and maybe

• 1:28Amy Poehler?

it's not as dumb as you think. And we're going to get into the absurdity of existence, because that's what we do here. We go deep, and then we get really shallow. And we're also going to talk about his film Friendship with the great Tim Robinson, which is coming out soon, so check it out. And we're going to start this episode the way we always like to, which is a fan or a friend or someone who knows our guest, so they can tell me what they think I should ask. • 2:49Amy Poehler?

  Toyota, let's go places.

• 2:59Speaker 01

  Polerino.

• 3:01Amy Poehler?

  Ham!

• 3:03Amy Poehler?

Please, explain. Explain to me what we're seeing right now.

• 3:08Speaker 01

Uh, you know, it's a typical day in Hollywood. I'm in a tuxedo at 7 o'clock in the morning with a hot air balloon in the background. I just got off that hot air balloon.

• 3:18Amy Poehler?

So you're telling me you got off a hot air balloon and you got on the phone so you could talk to us on good hang?

• 3:23Speaker 01

  In a tuxedo.

• 3:25Amy Poehler?

Well, I assume you're always wearing a tuxedo.

• 3:26Speaker 01

I mean, it kind of feels that way, right?

• 3:29Amy Poehler?

How many tuxedos do you own?

• 3:32Speaker 01

You know, when I moved into the house that I live in now, I think I sold or got rid of or donated or something, probably 15 tuxedos, and I probably still have a double-digit amount of tuxedos. None of them fit.

• 3:46Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 3:46Speaker 01

None of them fit. I was shocked that this one fit. This is one of mine. They said, "Do you have a tuxedo?" The costume designer came over last night. I was like, "Yeah, I got it. Come on, just come over to the house and take a look and see whatever tuxedo you want to have."

• 3:59Amy Poehler?

You're like, "Let's go to my white tuxedo closet."

• 4:03Speaker 01

  I do that, too.

• 4:04Amy Poehler?

So you're wearing your own personal tuxedo?

• 4:06Speaker 01

  Yes, personal tux.

• 4:09Amy Poehler?

Well, thank you, because I would expect nothing less. How much time do you have? Five minutes?

• 4:12Speaker 01

I have some time. We're turning around, so yeah, we have time.

• 4:16Amy Poehler?

For those that don't know, turning around is a movie term that means...

• 4:20Speaker 01

Shooting the other way from what you just shot, so you have to move all the equipment and everything, and everything has to move. That's why all the trucks are moving and all the...

• 4:29Amy Poehler?

  There's a hot air balloon.

• 4:34Amy Poehler?

There's a hot air balloon. Listeners, if you're listening, let me just describe that. Jon Hamm is in a beautiful.

• 4:40Speaker 01

There's a video component to this because.

• 4:42Amy Poehler?

Beautiful. There is. There is a video component. And there's, he's in a beautiful white tuxedo and behind him is a hot air balloon that he just got off of.

• 4:50Speaker 01

Doesn't this frame look like I'm thinking about a hot air balloon right now?

• 4:57Amy Poehler?

Okay, we're talking to Paul Rudd today.

• 4:59Speaker 01

Yes, my dear friend of many, many years.

• 5:01Amy Poehler?

We do this thing where we kind of talk behind their back before we talk about them. We talk to people that know them. Can you tell me where you first met Paul?

• 5:09Speaker 01

I first met Paul in St. Louis, Missouri. Paul was roommates and friends with my high school girlfriend's older brother. So this, and then this family was dear friends of mine too and still remain. They were all at my wedding. Like it's a whole, it's a whole thing, that Clark family. So Paul came back with Preston, the older brother for Thanksgiving or something one weekend. And he looked like Michael Hutchins. He had like long curly hair. He had, it was, it was probably 1990, 89 maybe.

• 5:50Speaker 01

And he couldn't have looked any cooler. He had a denim jacket that he had painted or had had painted. Someone painted on the back the cover of Duran Duran's Rio.

• 6:03Amy Poehler?

  Wow.

• 6:03Speaker 01

The Donald Nagel paint, painting, that very eighties thing. So he was operating at a much higher level than anybody we had really ever run into at that point in our lives.

• 6:15Amy Poehler?

Was he older than you at that?

• 6:17Speaker 01

He's two, yeah, he's two years older than me. So he was, he was a freshman in college when I was a junior in high school. And yeah, that's when I first met Paul and it was like, he was funny and cool and interesting and, and, you know, a college kid.

• 6:31Amy Poehler?

And did you become friends instantly? Like you really connected fast?

• 6:35Speaker 01

We definitely connected. I would say that, you know, Paul, that was when they, when Paul and Preston were going to KU, Kansas University. And then when I ended up going to the University of Missouri.

• 6:49Speaker 01

I went to visit Paul, who had by this point gone, transferred out of KU and moved to LA and was going to the Academy of Dramatic Arts. And he lived in North Hollywood with Preston and our friend Beau. And I came out for spring break to hang out with them. That's when I really became friends with them because we were hanging out in LA. Thanks. In LA, really just making a scene in 1991, 92. So we would go down to like the Third Street promenade and hang out.

• 7:25Amy Poehler?

  Just in jean jackets and...

• 7:26Speaker 01

Like a bunch of cool guys. Yeah. It was, there was a place called Yankee Doodles that was like a bar that had pool tables. And that was where we went.

• 7:36Amy Poehler?

And you were all like auditioning at that point?

• 7:39Speaker 01

I was still in college. They, Paul had just booked a big Nintendo ad, so he was just riding high. And then by the next time I came out, when I came out, when I moved out here after college in 95, he had done Clueless and he was on the way to go do Romeo and Juliet and he was on the way to the, to the stars. So it was crazy. That's, that's, I watched it all happen, you know? He was, he was, he was, he was the first one of us that really got famous. It was very, very cool.

• 8:09Amy Poehler?

That, what was that like to have a, like, I, I know, I remember my first friend who was famous, like when I moved to New York, Janine Garofalo was my first famous friend. And it was a trip. What was it like?

• 8:21Speaker 01

They're operating, again, they're just operating in different circles and you're like, oh, right. Those are the people that I read about. Because you read about them back then. It was like Premier Magazine had, you know, a feature on Paul or Entertainment Weekly or something.

• 8:35Amy Poehler?

He was like a big brother.

• 8:36Speaker 01

Big brother, for sure, for sure. Even though he stands about a foot shorter than me. Let's be honest.

• 8:42Amy Poehler?

Nobody's taller than you, Ham. Look at you. You literally look like you own this town. John is now walking through the fake town in his tuxedo, getting ready to get back on the hot air balloon.

• 8:51Speaker 01

  Yes, yes, here, here.

• 8:54Amy Poehler?

Wow. You look like a billionaire who's just having like a day out.

• 9:00Speaker 01

This is literally if I was a billionaire, I would take my hot air balloon to work.

• 9:04Amy Poehler?

Okay, so what question do you think I should ask Paul? We're asking people what I should ask him.

• 9:10Speaker 01

You know, I was, because I listened to your guys' thing with the one you guys did with Tina, which I thought was so good, and you guys had such a great rapport. I texted you guys.

• 9:19Amy Poehler?

John's getting in the hot air balloon right now.

• 9:22Speaker 01

Well, and we, I loved, I loved you and Seth and Drachi and everybody coming at it. I think the question I think you should ask Paul is at what point, or I was asking this to Billy Crudup on the set the other day.

• 9:39Speaker 01

What point, or has it happened yet in his, in his career or in his life? John's taken by taking it. Has he lost the freaking out about being good all the time from an active standpoint? You know what I mean? I don't have that, I don't have that stress anymore.

• 9:59Amy Poehler?

Yes, what do you think that is?

• 10:01Speaker 01

I love, I love what I do, and I love doing it, and I know if I don't do a great job, I'll do it again and it'll be good on the second take or whatever.

• 10:12Amy Poehler?

Oh my God, this is so exciting. Guys, listeners, John is about, he's rolling, I think. Are you rolling?

• 10:19Speaker 01

Going up, going up. Yeah, we're about to roll. So that's, that's what I would ask him.

• 10:23Amy Poehler?

Okay, when did he stop freaking out about doing a good job? Like, is he settled in?

• 10:28Speaker 01

Maybe he, maybe he still hasn't.

• 10:30Amy Poehler?

Maybe he still hasn't, and I want to know.

• 10:31Speaker 01

  When did that nickel drop?

• 10:33Amy Poehler?

When you come on, I want to ask you that question. Can you keep your phone on while you go up in the balloon?

• 10:39Speaker 01

  I can't because I'm on camera.

• 10:41Amy Poehler?

Damn it. Oh, I hate Hollywood. Hate acting.

• 10:44Speaker 01

  Hollywood's so dumb.

• 10:45Amy Poehler?

Okay, I love you so much. Thank you so much for this.

• 10:48Speaker 01

  Love you, Paula.

• 10:49Amy Poehler?

Can't wait to see you, buddy.

• 10:50Speaker 01

  All right, bud.

• 10:51Amy Poehler?

Okay, talk to you soon. Bye.

Do you remember the first time we met?

• 14:33Speaker 02

Was it maybe at, I don't know, is this a test?

• 14:39Amy Poehler?

Yeah, not only is it not a test, but I can't remember anything.

• 14:42Speaker 02

  Good, good. Perfect.

• 14:43Amy Poehler?

  Okay, I'm terrible.

• 14:45Speaker 02

I want to say, was it maybe?

• 14:48Speaker 02

It might have been at a UCB show early on. Or there was another time, I think I was at 10th Street Lounge.

• 14:57Amy Poehler?

  Ooh.

• 14:57Speaker 02

  With Janine Garofalo, maybe.

• 15:00Amy Poehler?

  My first famous friend.

• 15:01Speaker 02

Yeah, it was around that time. Because we kind of both moved to New York somewhat around the same time.

• 15:06Amy Poehler?

  When did you move?

• 15:06Speaker 02

  Like 95, so, 95.

• 15:10Amy Poehler?

  Right from Kansas, you moved?

• 15:12Speaker 02

  No, I was in California.

• 15:13Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 15:13Speaker 02

I'd gone to an acting school for a couple of years.

• 15:15Amy Poehler?

  What's, what kind of school?

• 15:17Speaker 02

The American Academy of Dramatic Arts. And that, it sounds like.

• 15:22Amy Poehler?

What do they call it? What's the shortened version of it?

• 15:24Speaker 02

  Ada.

• 15:24Amy Poehler?

  Ada.

• 15:24Speaker 02

  Or Ada.

• 15:25Amy Poehler?

  Ada.

• 15:26Speaker 02

I don't know. There's Ada, Lambda, Rada, Bada. I went to Bada, too.

• 15:31Amy Poehler?

You went to Ada and Bada?

• 15:32Speaker 02

I went to Ada and Bada. Yeah, I couldn't get into Kata. That was the next one.

• 15:37Amy Poehler?

And what did you do there? Did you do like constant plays?

• 15:40Speaker 02

  So much theater, Amy.

• 15:41Amy Poehler?

Oh, so much talking about theater.

• 15:44Speaker 02

  You know, a lot of.

• 15:45Amy Poehler?

Let's have our tea before we talk about.

• 15:47Speaker 02

  Listen, just enjoy this tip.

• 15:48Amy Poehler?

You know, the thing about theater is.

• 15:50Speaker 02

The thing is, you know, Pinter said once.

• 15:52Amy Poehler?

  You know, I remember Godot.

• 15:57Speaker 02

Oh, I remember. We were doing Malphi at the Round Wharf, Bobby and I. And we were in between Guillaume. We were in between matinee and evening performance.

• 16:10Amy Poehler?

When I was understudying for Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, I remember thinking,

• 16:16Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 16:17Amy Poehler?

if we could have done Crimes this way, of the heart.

• 16:19Speaker 02

Yes, yes, no, absolutely. It's funny you should say that because when Renee Abergenois and I were doing Mattress, Once Upon, Once Upon a, we had this exact same conversation about, you know.

• 16:33Amy Poehler?

Mattress. I was in Once Upon a Mattress.

• 16:36Speaker 02

  Tis pity, she's a whore.

• 16:37Amy Poehler?

I was in Once Upon a Mattress in high school.

• 16:38Speaker 02

By the way, I just buried, tis pity, she's a whore, which is a real play.

• 16:41Amy Poehler?

What was your high school musical or play?

• 16:44Speaker 02

  High school musical, South Pacific.

• 16:46Amy Poehler?

  And you played?

• 16:47Speaker 02

  Buzz.

• 16:48Amy Poehler?

Buzz was just created. Is Buzz in the show?

• 16:51Speaker 02

I think he's in the show. He's a pilot. I think he maybe had a couple of lines. But I loved. Dramatic films and dramatic actors. And I thought, oh, this is what you're supposed to do. And so, then I got to college and it was like, oh, I'm studying Shakespeare, which I'd never done before and found that I really liked it.

• 17:13Amy Poehler?

Yeah. And what were you doing to make a living during that time? What was your jobs? So many jobs.

• 17:17Speaker 02

Yeah. I was going to school. I would DJ and emcee bar mitzvahs and bat mitzvahs.

• 17:23Amy Poehler?

  That's right.

• 17:24Speaker 02

I did that for a while, because I could work on weekends.

• 17:28Amy Poehler?

Right. What was the party pumping song? What was the song that would get people on the floor?

• 17:37Speaker 02

  Well.

• 17:37Amy Poehler?

  C and C Music Factory?

• 17:39Speaker 02

Yeah. Oh, sure. I mean, that was big.

• 17:43Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 17:43Speaker 02

There was also just the real fun of just a straight up moany, moany that Billy Idol would do. Because.

• 17:53Amy Poehler?

  Come on, that part.

• 17:56Speaker 02

Here she comes now, say moany, moany. Hey, now, get.

• 18:02Amy Poehler?

  Laid, get fucked.

• 18:04Speaker 02

And that was like, that was.

• 18:06Amy Poehler?

I forgot about that. Get laid, get fucked.

• 18:09Speaker 02

And you would always find like 13-year-olds going.

• 18:14Amy Poehler?

  They were like, finally.

• 18:15Speaker 02

I'm gonna say this. And then I'd look around and see kind of like the grandparents.

• 18:21Amy Poehler?

So then you go to school, you come to New York.

• 18:24Speaker 02

I went to this acting school in California, Ada, which is where I met Adam, by the way. That's how we became friends.

• 18:31Amy Poehler?

Tell us how you met Adam. You're neat cute.

• 18:34Speaker 02

  So I was probably.

• 18:36Amy Poehler?

  Adam Scott.

• 18:37Speaker 02

Adam Scott. I was probably 21 and Adam was maybe 17 or 18 years old. Maybe I was 22 and he was 18. And there was like a party. The school's only like a couple of years. It wasn't big. But this, I do remember the first time I met Adam. And it was somebody's having a party. And we hit it off right away. We talked. And I want to say we talked about R E M. And then, and we became.

• 19:06Speaker 02

We became pretty tight, pretty good friends not that long after that. He was, he went there after I did.

• 19:13Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 19:13Speaker 02

Um, and then we did a, and then we did a play together. I, cause I graduated from that school and I stayed in California for a few years. And then tried to get a play going. That one of the teachers, a woman named Diana Stevenson at that school, she had said, let's do this play about Byron and Shelley called Bloody Poetry.

• 19:31Amy Poehler?

  Hmm.

• 19:31Speaker 02

And, uh, so it was a small little cast and Adam and I did it together.

• 19:37Amy Poehler?

  You did?

• 19:38Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 19:38Amy Poehler?

Do you have any recording of that or anything?

• 19:40Speaker 02

  I have, I have a recording.

• 19:41Amy Poehler?

  You do?

• 19:42Speaker 02

  Of the play, yeah.

• 19:43Amy Poehler?

And it's the two of you playing Byron and Shelley?

• 19:45Speaker 02

  Uh, he played Polidori.

• 19:47Amy Poehler?

  He played Buzz.

• 19:48Speaker 02

He played Buzz. He was the buzz in, yeah, in Bloody Poetry.

• 19:52Amy Poehler?

Did you audition for any John Hughes stuff?

• 19:55Speaker 02

No, that was a little before my time, yeah. I loved it, but.

• 19:59Amy Poehler?

  I did too.

• 19:59Speaker 02

But I auditioned for different things and I didn't really get them. And then, and then, um, the, I did audition for Clueless, which was like the John Hughes things. And I went in, I didn't really get it. I was reading that script, I'm like, um, oh, this is like, uh, like, oh, a bunch of kids, huh? This reminds me a little bit of those movies I used to, I grew up watching.

• 20:23Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 20:24Speaker 02

And then, um, and then I got this audition to go in and I, I remember there were other characters. I'm like, oh, that's a, that's a cool character. I hadn't seen the character like Christian before like this. I liked it that there was a gay character that was not being made fun of, but it's like kind of the coolest character.

• 20:39Amy Poehler?

The bar was so low then, it was like, hey, he's gay and, and, uh, nice.

• 20:43Speaker 02

Yeah, and it was just like, oh, wow, this is like, I haven't seen this movie really before.

• 20:48Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 20:48Speaker 02

Um, and anyway, so I went in and I asked to audition for all the different parts. And then they said, well, what about, read, read for the part that I wound up playing, which is the, uh, Josh character. And so I did, I didn't really hear anything afterward. And I remember I'd really, I had long hair. And then a couple of weeks later, I wasn't even thinking about it. We, I, I just went to a, I was walking past a barber shop and I just went in, I said, just buzz my head. I mean, my hair was down about there.

• 21:16Amy Poehler?

  Wow.

• 21:16Speaker 02

And they, and they just, went with the clippers, everything. And I was just like, I just want to cut it all off. And then a week later, I went into a restaurant and Amy Heckerling, who directed the movie, was.

• 21:31Speaker 02

Eating there and she looked at me and

• 21:33Amy Poehler?

And she was like, wait a minute.

• 21:35Speaker 02

She froze and she goes, what did you do? What, what, what did you do to your hair? I was like, ah, it's like shaved.

• 21:43Amy Poehler?

You're like, it's getting too long.

• 21:45Speaker 02

You were in, you auditioned for this part.

• 21:49Speaker 02

We were gonna, you were gonna, maybe gonna get this part, but you can't cut your, I was like, and I was so, I'm like, ah, well, if it's meant to be, it's meant to be. Like, I wasn't, I was so stupidly kind of cavalier about it.

• 21:59Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 21:59Speaker 02

But then I had to do a screen test for Glueless and they put me in a wig to try and match what my, what my hair is.

• 22:06Amy Poehler?

And there is nothing that feels more manly.

• 22:09Speaker 02

  Than a

• 22:10Amy Poehler?

Than when you're trying to get, when you're trying to get chemistry. Uh, to get, be like, sweetheart, don't pull my hair too much.

• 22:18Speaker 02

Eventually, like enough time had gone by that, anyway, they're like, yeah, this is not gonna work.

• 22:25Amy Poehler?

  Just grow your hair out.

• 22:26Speaker 02

And so they, they skipped the wig and, and by the time it got to filming, my hair had grown enough that, uh, it, it worked okay.

• 22:36Amy Poehler?

That's an amazing story because what it says to me too, though, and I find this about you as a person, is like, you do not have a grasping energy when it comes to work. Like, you care about it very much. It's really important. You, you choose things wisely. You work really hard when you're there. But I don't get a sense from you that you are, I don't know, there's a way, there's a vibe with you and work that feels like a healthy attachment. It doesn't feel like you're, what the kids would say, very thirsty and therefore I think it, people really lean into that and like that. Would you think that, would you say that's true?

• 23:14Speaker 02

I, in some regard, yeah. I don't think, like, I don't feel, uh, competitive with other actors. I'm a real big fan of a lot of other actors. I get really excited by people who I, like, are talented.

• 23:31Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 23:32Speaker 02

And, um, I, I don't think this should be torturous. I know this is something you and I both really share.

• 23:40Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 23:40Speaker 02

Which is, um, this should be fun. It's a really fun job. You respond to comedy in the same way I do. And that it

• 23:54Speaker 02

Should be a fun experience. Like, have you had the experience where you're working on something and it's like, might be funny? People say, "Oh, if you find it funny, it's not gonna be funny." And it's supposed to be torturous, otherwise it won't work. It looks like you're having, if you think it's a blast, it's not gonna translate. And I think I couldn't disagree with that more.

• 24:17Amy Poehler?

Agree. What do you do when you're on a project? And you're, and you, someone's either missed, like, what's your conflict style? Cause like, do you get quiet when you're mad? Do you yell?

• 24:30Speaker 02

I certainly have yelled, my god.

• 24:33Amy Poehler?

  Ow, stop. Okay, you yelled.

• 24:37Speaker 02

And don't you dare say anything like that to me.

• 24:40Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 24:41Speaker 02

  Ever again.

• 24:41Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 24:42Speaker 02

  Ever.

• 24:43Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 24:46Speaker 02

Are we done with this? So, I, my conflict style is probably different depending on who I have a conflict with.

• 24:58Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, right.

• 25:01Speaker 02

More often than not, I'll check out.

• 25:06Amy Poehler?

That's what I was gonna say. I was gonna say, go to sleep, maybe?

• 25:09Speaker 02

Yeah, I'll just be like, uh.

• 25:10Amy Poehler?

  Like, I'm so tired.

• 25:10Speaker 02

This is gonna be over soon.

• 25:11Amy Poehler?

Mm-hmm. If I just get in this bed and just go to sleep.

• 25:14Speaker 02

I'm just gonna, I mean, I'm just gonna try and, I gotta ride this out. I can't go anywhere. I gotta do this.

• 25:21Amy Poehler?

Get in one of those pods and just deep freeze myself till this gets fixed.

• 25:24Speaker 02

Exactly right. Deprivation, sensory deprivation tank.

• 25:28Amy Poehler?

Okay, I do wanna ask you about our working together. Because we did it quite a bit. We've worked together quite a bit. We've been so lucky to work together on so many things. And we worked on the most, one of the most fun movies, Wet Hot American Summer. And I think it was fun for a million reasons. It was fun because we were all in our 30s and we were at a summer camp. It was fun because... A lot of us were, myself included, were like in the beginnings of things.

• 25:53Speaker 02

Yeah, we were all kind of starting off.

• 25:55Amy Poehler?

We were, and we had great leaders in Michael Showalter and David Wayne, who were kind of like goofing around and, and setting the tone, but also serious writers and filmmakers. We also met a bunch of lifelong friends on that movie. And it felt very, you know, pre 9/11 frankly. It was like before the, those times. It just felt like of another era.

• 26:19Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 26:19Amy Poehler?

  And, um.

• 26:20Speaker 02

It's like pre, like, I don't even remember having cell phones.

• 26:24Amy Poehler?

There were no cell phones. There was a, remember there was a pay phone?

• 26:27Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 26:28Amy Poehler?

  And everybody would call.

• 26:29Speaker 02

  Yes, up front, yeah, yeah.

• 26:31Amy Poehler?

  To their.

• 26:31Speaker 02

  That's right.

• 26:32Amy Poehler?

You know, significant others and be like, yeah, I guess I'm up here for another three weeks. I know, they changed the schedule.

• 26:39Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 26:39Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 26:40Speaker 02

Do you remember we had to leave for a week in the middle of shooting?

• 26:44Amy Poehler?

Cause there was an actual camp?

• 26:45Speaker 02

No, because somebody rented it out for a bar mitzvah. And we all left for a week and then had to come back.

• 26:52Amy Poehler?

That's right, I forgot about that.

• 26:53Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 26:54Amy Poehler?

Now, it's kind of legendary, people know that it rained.

• 26:56Speaker 02

  The whole time.

• 26:57Amy Poehler?

Twenty-five of the 28 days or whatever the shoot was. And we had to pretend it was sunny.

• 27:03Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 27:03Amy Poehler?

  And it was freezing cold.

• 27:04Speaker 02

  Freezing.

• 27:05Amy Poehler?

What do you remember about staying warm or the weather when we were shooting Wet Hot?

• 27:11Speaker 02

Uh, I remember in those brief moments when it was sunny, we all were like, oh my god, it was like, what can we film? What can we do? What could, but, um, you know, I remember the opening scene that we did when we were all around the campfire when, like, when they playing Jane.

• 27:31Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 27:31Speaker 02

That it had been pouring and it was like, we're sitting, I was like soaking wet everywhere.

• 27:36Amy Poehler?

  Freezing.

• 27:37Speaker 02

And freezing, it was all freezing. It was freezing all the time.

• 27:41Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 27:41Speaker 02

I remember the, I remember the, kind of the clothes we were wearing at the time.

• 27:48Amy Poehler?

I remember being really grateful, and this isn't the first time that I'm grateful, that like I didn't have to wear, you know, like Liz Banks was kind of playing like the, the girl who was a little bit more free, let's put it that way. And she had to wear like bikini tops and stuff. And I remember many times in my life, I had this feeling where I'd be like, I'm so happy that I get to wear like a members only jacket. I'm so cold.

• 28:12Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 28:12Amy Poehler?

Whereas now I run very hot. But back then, I was so cold. I mean, and I remember being really grateful that she, I remember her having to dance and it being really cold.

• 28:22Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 28:23Amy Poehler?

  Um.

• 28:23Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 28:24Amy Poehler?

And I remember going to Salvation Army. Do you remember that?

• 28:28Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 28:29Amy Poehler?

We would all head out to Salvation Army.

• 28:31Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 28:32Amy Poehler?

Because the thing that people didn't know is we worked very little.

• 28:35Speaker 02

Yeah. They're really, and whoever wasn't filming.

• 28:39Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 28:39Speaker 02

Had, because we were, there was a 30-minute drive to Target in the main part of town.

• 28:45Amy Poehler?

I don't even think it was Target. I think it was just like Walmart.

• 28:47Speaker 02

It was Walmart, yeah, yeah. It might have been pre-Target.

• 28:49Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 28:50Speaker 02

And whoever wasn't filming had to go buy the beer.

• 28:52Amy Poehler?

  Yes, for the night.

• 28:54Speaker 02

And we were all wearing like kind of, you know, Wellingtons and, and.

• 28:58Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 28:58Speaker 02

And then we would all just hang out and drink beer and.

• 29:04Amy Poehler?

  Drink beer every night.

• 29:06Speaker 02

Craig would play guitar, they have guitars and play music really loud, really late.

• 29:12Amy Poehler?

Do you remember David Hyde Pierce?

• 29:13Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 29:14Amy Poehler?

Coming out to tell us to, can you be a little quieter?

• 29:17Speaker 02

Yeah, it was his first, he showed up, no one, we were all like dumb kids.

• 29:24Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 29:24Speaker 02

Just wanted to have a blast.

• 29:26Amy Poehler?

But a reminder, we were not kids, we were in our 30s, or.

• 29:30Speaker 02

You were late 20s, I think I was 30. Yeah, you were late 20s, I was 30. And then, um, and David Hyde Pierce showed up, he was coming in later, but he was also the, except for Janine, the only one that anyone would really know.

• 29:44Amy Poehler?

Totally, he was famous and if you were psyched.

• 29:46Speaker 02

And we were all like, what is this guy gonna think? And we are, we all slept in those kinds of like in the infirmary, everyone had these little kind of, their own little rooms and cots or whatever it is, and then the main infirmary where we would hang out as a group every night till like 1, 2 in the morning, playing music really loud, um, was the main part.

• 30:08Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 30:08Speaker 02

And, uh, and I remember it was his first night, none of us knew him. And it was like 1:00 in the morning and it's so loud, he's filming the next morning and he's been in his room.

• 30:18Amy Poehler?

And he probably is rehearsing, he's knowing his lines, he's a professional.

• 30:21Speaker 02

He's a professional. And I remember he came out and then stopped in the doorway and we all, it was like, er, the needle on the record, stop, everyone got quiet, and we all looked and Ken Marino just goes, oh great, it's Frasier.

• 30:40Speaker 02

  Do you remember that?

• 30:41Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 30:45Speaker 02

And, and, and David Hyde Pierce is like, what are you guys doing? Like, he was

• 30:51Amy Poehler?

  He was so fun.

• 30:52Speaker 02

So fun and cool and, and, and it was just like, oh, thank God.

• 30:56Amy Poehler?

Yeah, he was the nicest, most loveliest guy.

• 30:59Speaker 02

  He was the best.

• 31:00Amy Poehler?

But he definitely was like, what's happening here?

• 31:01Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 31:02Amy Poehler?

What's going on? And we were like, we're, oh, none of us are working.

• 31:05Speaker 02

  None of us are?

• 31:06Amy Poehler?

We don't have anything to shoot tomorrow.

• 31:07Speaker 02

  Nope.

• 31:08Amy Poehler?

  We're here, there's no telephones.

• 31:10Speaker 02

And then whoever what did have to shoot, we'd all just go watch their scenes.

• 31:13Amy Poehler?

  Just go watch it.

• 31:14Speaker 02

We'd just go watch it. It was like, it was being at camp.

• 31:17Amy Poehler?

Yeah, it was, it really was. I'm having a Ken Marino memory. He was watching the, he was, he was watching ER on a little, like, there used to be these TVs you could hang around your neck. Do you remember these? It was like, it was almost like a portable TV, but it, it almost looked like a monitor, like, what, like, Flavor Flav would wear, like a big giant clock, but it's a TV and you have, oh, the strap around your neck? That is my memory. And again, I don't remember things well. But he was watching on a small TV and he came running through the hallway saying, she went back to Clooney. It was the big moment where, um, do you remember this? Where, um, Julianne Margulies, Nurse Hathaway, Carol Hathaway,

• 31:59Amy Poehler?

went back to Clooney, like, you know, met him on, at his boat. Spoiler alert. Met him at his boat in Seattle and the, uh, he came running with like tears streaming down his face, saying, she went back to Clooney. And we were all like, like, we really did live together for many weeks.

• 32:19Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 32:20Amy Poehler?

It probably was only like three weeks.

• 32:22Speaker 02

I think it might've been more like five or six.

• 32:25Amy Poehler?

I mean, it's ridiculous for how little we worked.

• 32:27Speaker 02

With the week that we had off for the bar mitzvah included. I think that's, yeah.

• 32:32Amy Poehler?

Yeah, and that was Bradley Cooper's first movie.

• 32:34Speaker 02

Mm-hmm, I think, was it Banks? Might have been Banks.

• 32:37Amy Poehler?

Maybe, yeah. And that was just so, there were so many great people.

• 32:41Speaker 02

But I don't remember, like, filming scenes, and everyone's like, kinda watching. And you were the one that I would go to, and I'm like, is that funny? Was that kinda, you know, I really valued your opinion on everything.

• 32:53Amy Poehler?

And I would go, uh, I'd say, go back out there, do it again.

• 32:56Speaker 02

  Do it again.

• 32:57Amy Poehler?

  I'd say, I didn't feel like-

• 32:58Speaker 02

  Ask for another one.

• 32:59Amy Poehler?

  I'd say, yeah.

• 33:00Speaker 02

Paul, you want to ask for another?

• 33:01Amy Poehler?

Go ask for another one, Matt Paul.

• 33:02Speaker 02

  You want to ask for-

• 33:03Amy Poehler?

Okay, then we made a movie called They Came Together. Such a fun movie.

• 33:09Speaker 02

  So fun.

• 33:09Amy Poehler?

For people that haven't seen it, which is probably a lot of people, because it was kind of a small movie.

• 33:13Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 33:13Amy Poehler?

It was like a fake rom-com.

• 33:14Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 33:15Amy Poehler?

And it was taking all the tropes, a David Wayne special, taking all the tropes of like, what is funny about those movies. And I would say, we just screened it again, and we just had like an anniversary. It was so fun.

• 33:31Speaker 02

Oh, man, I wish I could have been there.

• 33:32Amy Poehler?

And watching it again, it was like, you are perfectly cast. I would probably not cast, I would not be cast in a rom-com in that part. I would be the friend in the rom-com. I don't think I would be able to pull off the rom-com. I don't have the symmetry for it. But what is so-

• 33:52Speaker 02

  I disagree, but go ahead.

• 33:53Amy Poehler?

Okay, thank you. But, um, little slow on that, but-

• 33:56Speaker 02

Well, I didn't want to interrupt you.

• 33:58Amy Poehler?

Okay, thanks. But, um, but what is so fun about it is, it is so stupid.

• 34:06Speaker 02

This most stupid, stupidest movie ever.

• 34:10Amy Poehler?

And don't forget, in the middle of that movie, there's a, it stops to have a music video with Norah Jones.

• 34:19Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 34:19Amy Poehler?

Who sang the song from that movie that Adam Scott and John Stamos show up and do cameos in.

• 34:25Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 34:25Amy Poehler?

Because they come to the studio.

• 34:27Speaker 02

Yeah. The video for, the video, the video for the song, that's the song, the, on the soundtrack of the movie-

• 34:34Amy Poehler?

Is in the middle of the movie.

• 34:35Speaker 02

Is in the middle of the movie.

• 34:36Amy Poehler?

And then Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler, the actors, show up to be like, what's happening here? And we're wearing sunglasses.

• 34:43Speaker 02

  Yeah, and a soul patch.

• 34:45Amy Poehler?

  You had a soul patch?

• 34:45Speaker 02

Yeah, had a soul patch. But it's like, yeah, us in our street clothes.

• 34:48Amy Poehler?

In our street clothes, and then our buddies also come to like, play with some of the buttons.

• 34:52Speaker 02

Yeah, they're in this, mixing boards, and we're just like hanging out, goofing around with Norah Jones.

• 35:00Amy Poehler?

  Professional, incredible musician.

• 35:02Speaker 02

And then after the video ends, it just goes right back to the movie.

• 35:05Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 35:06Speaker 02

How did this movie get made?

• 35:08Amy Poehler?

  So stupid.

• 35:09Speaker 02

  It's so dumb.

• 35:10Amy Poehler?

It's so fun to watch again. It is so dumb. I mean, and I know we share that, like, that feeling of dumb. It's like, I can't, it's hard to explain that feeling of, I mean, well, I guess everyone understands it. That feeling that you have with your friends when something is so stupid. And so funny. I think it is truly, like, the

• 35:34Amy Poehler?

opposite of your own mortality. Like, it feels like you'll live forever when you're laughing at dumb. Does that make sense?

• 35:41Speaker 02

It makes total sense. It's the greatest. It's, and that endorphin.

• 35:46Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 35:46Speaker 02

Everything just kicks in and you're like, oh, oh, this entire life is absurd.

• 35:54Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 35:55Speaker 02

  All of this.

• 35:56Amy Poehler?

  That's right.

• 35:56Speaker 02

  Everything. The absurdity of existence.

• 36:00Amy Poehler?

Yeah. What are you listening to, watching? What do you, what makes you laugh right now?

• 36:04Speaker 02

All kinds of different things. I suppose, um,

• 36:10Speaker 02

when people talk about comedy specials and stuff, I always say, oh, have you seen Patrice O'Neal Elephant in the Room? That's one of my favorites.

• 36:17Amy Poehler?

  So funny.

• 36:18Speaker 02

It's like, the fact that Patrice O'Neal, that we lost Patrice O'Neal when we did, where I feel like he was on the verge of just being the guy, um, is just heartbreaking.

• 36:31Speaker 02

I think he was just so funny.

• 36:32Amy Poehler?

I feel that way about Bernie Mac, too.

• 36:33Speaker 02

  Yeah. Really, really, really funny.

• 36:36Amy Poehler?

  Gone too soon.

• 36:37Speaker 02

And, um, that's one of my favorites. What I, I, one of the things I just kind of, I always seem to watch. I mean, I like little memes and things that get passed around, like the guy jumping into the pool that it's frozen over and he doesn't know it. He just like wipes it out. That kind of stuff is, people falling, forget it. I love it. But I, uh, I love, uh, I always go back to, um, news bloopers.

• 37:01Amy Poehler?

Oh, God, let's just watch, hold on, let's just watch a few.

• 37:05Speaker 02

  Great.

• 37:05Amy Poehler?

Do you have any that you remember that, like, I can Google?

• 37:10Speaker 02

Well, you know, there are these, there's just something so beautiful and great about people that they, they're, it's the news, it's serious. And when something goes wrong.

• 37:21Amy Poehler?

You know, the gay blind one? That one is incredible.

• 37:23Speaker 02

That is, that is, that is the simp, that is the, I've watched that so many times, it's what? Four seconds. The blind.

• 37:32Amy Poehler?

  It is.

• 37:33Speaker 02

  Mountain climber.

• 37:34Speaker 03

Right after the break, we're going to interview Eric Wyhan, mayor, who climbed the highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest. But he's gay, I mean, he's gay, excuse me, he's blind. So we'll hear about that coming up.

• 37:46Speaker 02

Okay, as we headed the break.

• 37:47Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 37:48Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 37:49Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 37:49Speaker 02

And as we headed the break, and, and you know, I, wait a minute, because you, you know, in her, in her, like, oh, boy, I just messed up. And he is like, I'm just gonna pretend that didn't happen.

• 38:02Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 38:02Speaker 02

  Okay. So, all right.

• 38:04Amy Poehler?

  Oh, my God.

• 38:05Speaker 02

I'm sorry, gay, I'm sorry, uh, blind, he's blind.

• 38:10Speaker 02

  So I will.

• 38:11Amy Poehler?

  I love bloopers.

• 38:13Speaker 02

  Bloopers?

• 38:14Amy Poehler?

I feel like we grew up with bloopers.

• 38:17Speaker 02

Nothing? When I see people really laughing and really like, there's in those news bloopers, here's one, there's one, it's these two guys, they're speaking a language I don't understand.

• 38:28Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 38:28Speaker 02

It's like, I don't know what, by the way, some of the ones in that like news in other countries.

• 38:34Amy Poehler?

Ooh, I don't even think to look for that, I'm gonna.

• 38:37Speaker 02

I'll go in, I'm gonna go like, best news bloopers of twenty, twenty-three, or twenty-two, I've, I've seen them all.

• 38:42Amy Poehler?

Like global news bloopers, that's what I'm finding right now.

• 38:45Speaker 02

I will watch those over and over again, but there's like one where these two guys, and somebody says something, and I don't know what he's saying, but the other guy says it, and he starts laughing, and they both start laughing. And they are crying.

• 38:57Amy Poehler?

  Oh, God.

• 38:58Speaker 02

And they're on the ground crying, and I don't know what the hell they're talking about. And I'm tears, because there's, there's.

• 39:05Amy Poehler?

God, I do love, God, I love that. Why do we love, I mean, I mean, I think.

• 39:10Speaker 02

Because there's something, it's the opposite of pretension. It's pure joy. It's, uh, there's, it's defenseless, there, it's like, it's, it's the purest.

• 39:21Speaker 02

It's celebratory. My wife has said before, this is such a good idea. She goes, they should have, like, in hospitals when people are getting, going for like chemotherapy or whatever, and they're sitting in the chair for hours. They should have on screens all around just bloopers of people laughing.

• 39:43Amy Poehler?

That is a great idea, Julie Rudd.

• 39:46Speaker 02

It's a great idea. And I agree. Like, if I see people laughing really, really hard, I'm done. I love it so much.

• 39:56Amy Poehler?

  I love it so much.

• 39:57Speaker 02

  It's the greatest.

• 39:58Amy Poehler?

Me too. Speaking of laughing really hard, and speaking, I think, of a show that did help a lot of people during hard times. You were on Parks and Rec. You only did five episodes, do you know that?

• 40:08Speaker 02

  I know.

• 40:09Amy Poehler?

But you played a character that stood the test of time. I mean, I mean, if only, if only we had Bobby Newport. Just a guy who wants to be liked.

• 40:20Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 40:20Amy Poehler?

  And who...

• 40:21Speaker 02

  I know, if only, right?

• 40:22Amy Poehler?

I mean, Bobby, at the time...

• 40:24Speaker 02

Means well, just doesn't quite grasp any of it.

• 40:27Amy Poehler?

He wants to go to the after-party.

• 40:29Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 40:29Amy Poehler?

Bobby Newport, played by you, was the, like, the rich son of the Swedums family, the family, the Newports that owned the big factory in the fictional town of Pawnee that Parks and Rec took place. And Bobby Newport ran against Leslie. And it was like, what Bobby had that Leslie could never get was that

• 40:52Amy Poehler?

gee whiz, like, I can't believe I fell into this. Like, I just want to have a good time, you guys.

• 40:58Speaker 02

Yeah, I think that's even a line that, that's how Bobby feels about abortion, isn't it?

• 41:03Amy Poehler?

Oh, yeah, right, what did he say about abortion?

• 41:05Speaker 02

I guess my thoughts on abortion are just like, want everybody to have a good time.

• 41:10Amy Poehler?

Just want everybody to have a good time. I mean, come on, guys.

• 41:13Speaker 02

  What?

• 41:13Amy Poehler?

And Bobby kept getting flustered by Leslie wanting it, because he wants it. Like, there's that great scene where he's like, can you just drop out of the race, because I want it?

• 41:23Speaker 02

  Yeah. Yeah.

• 41:25Amy Poehler?

  Because I want it.

• 41:25Speaker 02

I want it, come on. Please, you can do it. Just do it. Come on.

• 41:32Amy Poehler?

And people are like, I don't know, I love the guy. He's great. And he doesn't seem to want it. Yeah, and he doesn't know anything, but neither do I. That's, you know.

• 41:40Speaker 02

You're, Leslie Knope is capable and great for that job. Bobby Newport is not.

• 41:46Amy Poehler?

No, and Bobby was, I think, was thinking like, maybe I'll just get it, and then Leslie, you can do it.

• 41:51Speaker 02

Yeah. How about that? That's a good compromise.

• 41:54Amy Poehler?

What do, what are your memories of doing that? Charakter was such a funny character. You were so great.

• 41:59Speaker 02

Thank you, Amy. My memories of that were, I can't believe I get to work with my favorite people in the world. You, and Adam, and Catherine, and Rashida, and like, it was like, this is the dream. I mean, this is the, you know, I remember when you were talking to Tina on the very first episode you did, where you were saying you feel like the, how, the great thing that can happen if you are able to sustain enough of a career that you can get to a point where you work with your friends, you get to work with people you really like. Because it's not work. It's just, it's, it's just the best. And I mean, it was such a fun character, obviously.

• 42:43Speaker 02

And the show is so great, and you're so great in it. It was, it was, it was just, it was a dream. It was a dream. And, you know, and I was, I loved it. I loved every second of it. I loved hanging out with all you guys.

• 42:59Amy Poehler?

  It was so fun.

• 43:00Speaker 02

  It was really fun.

• 43:01Amy Poehler?

It was. And that, and it was, those scenes were so funny. Like, he got, you got to do the stupidest, talk about fun, stupid. The stupidest stuff.

• 43:10Speaker 02

Yeah. Well, there's nothing, there's nothing funnier to me than unearned confidence.

• 43:18Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 43:19Speaker 02

Like, just, just somebody feels like they, you know, it's like, I've got it figured out. And it's like, no, you don't.

• 43:25Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 43:26Speaker 02

But if it's, and if it's

• 43:30Speaker 02

If it's like nice unearned, like if it's fun, it's really funny if it's not nice unearned confidence. But that was the thing of like, he had a lot of kind of unearned confidence, but he had, he was just dumb.

• 43:43Amy Poehler?

Yeah, he wanted to have a good time.

• 43:45Speaker 02

He was sweet though, but he's a nice, he was sweet.

• 43:47Amy Poehler?

  He was sweet.

• 43:47Speaker 02

And that, and that was, and that was a fun, that was kind of, that's a fun thing to get to play. It's a fun kind of character to get to play.

• 43:56Amy Poehler?

Would you, would we describe him as like guyless? Is that the word?

• 43:59Speaker 02

Yeah, I think that's a good way to do it. Yeah, there's, yeah.

• 44:02Amy Poehler?

I know that word, so just wanted to know.

• 44:04Speaker 02

That's a really good, by the way, of course you do.

• 44:06Amy Poehler?

  Fucking great word.

• 44:07Speaker 02

He has a fucking great word.

• 44:08Amy Poehler?

  Fucking great word.

• 44:09Speaker 02

  God damn.

• 44:10Amy Poehler?

You know, it also was really cool to watch you and Adam in scenes together because you, have you been in a lot of stuff together?

• 44:18Speaker 02

  Not a ton of stuff.

• 44:19Amy Poehler?

  I know.

• 44:19Speaker 02

It's weird, he's like my, kind of like my closest oldest friend and, and we have, but we haven't done a ton of stuff together.

• 44:27Amy Poehler?

Like, would you ever do a movie together?

• 44:29Speaker 02

  I'd love it.

• 44:29Amy Poehler?

  You should.

• 44:30Speaker 02

  He's such a good actor.

• 44:31Amy Poehler?

  He is.

• 44:32Speaker 02

He's a really, I mean, clearly everyone's obviously recognizing this.

• 44:36Amy Poehler?

I mean, I used to say that to him in real time when he was acting. I'd be like, you're acting so good. And he'd be like, shut up, we're in the middle of the scene. But I'd be like, you're acting so good.

• 44:46Speaker 02

Well, he's like, he's one of, you know, he's so good. And he really can play very complex emotional scenes.

• 44:56Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 44:57Speaker 02

And you really kind of know what that character is thinking. And then, but then he also has a way of being able to kind of remove this, have this kind of emotionless removal of what he, whatever he's doing. This really interesting, which plays in a severance, I think, very well.

• 45:12Amy Poehler?

And you can do that too. To be a movie star, you have to be able to make your face still. You have to be able to just like get the machine on like neutral, like for everyone to project.

• 45:23Speaker 02

And it's, he's very good. It's like a Greek mask kind of thing. And so Adam is great at that. And the one thing that I always thought with Anna, like when I met him is He's the funniest, he's got the driest, kind of most irreverent sense of humor. I mean, it was, that's how we became friends, because of just

• 45:44Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 45:44Speaker 02

liked a lot of the same kind of jokes and things like that.

• 45:47Amy Poehler?

I just watched the Severance finale and I texted him, I was like, you are so good at acting. And then he was like, oh, thanks, I'm glad you watched it. And I was like, there was so much running. Like

• 45:58Speaker 02

  I haven't seen it yet. I haven't seen, I haven't seen

• 46:00Amy Poehler?

  You haven't seen the finale?

• 46:01Speaker 02

  No, so

• 46:02Amy Poehler?

  It hasn't been spoiled?

• 46:03Speaker 02

No, I'm staying away from everything. I don't look at my phone, I don't do, you know.

• 46:07Amy Poehler?

That's why you can't be on TikTok. If you're on TikTok, you got about an hour.

• 46:10Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 46:11Amy Poehler?

And then it's, then there's like, there's audios made of what he said at the end.

• 46:14Speaker 02

And I know, I know. So, yeah, I've been able to avoid all that. And I've told him, I've like, I haven't, I haven't reached out to you yet.

• 46:24Amy Poehler?

  Because you're saving it.

• 46:25Speaker 02

  I haven't seen it yet.

• 46:27Amy Poehler?

And you're just edging, you're not gonna, you're not gonna watch the finale.

• 46:30Speaker 02

Oh, by the way, I'm not gonna really watch season two.

• 46:34Amy Poehler?

  You're like, oh, we'll see.

• 46:35Speaker 02

I'll tell him he was great in it.

• 46:37Amy Poehler?

  But I mean

• 46:38Speaker 02

Anyway. But he is, he really is terrific. And you know that better than anybody.

• 46:44Amy Poehler?

Well, this is a perfect segue to male friendship.

• 46:48Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 46:49Amy Poehler?

Because you have so, let's chug, hold on, let's chug our tea.

• 46:55Speaker 02

  Chug it.

• 46:58Amy Poehler?

I mean this was, that is such a good

• 47:01Speaker 02

  I think I'm out.

• 47:02Amy Poehler?

Let's get some, let's get six more teas.

• 47:04Speaker 02

I gotta cover this, so you're, so for sponsorship, no one knows what I'm drinking. You can't see any labels.

• 47:09Amy Poehler?

You can't, no. The inside of my mug is filled with labels, but the outside

• 47:13Speaker 02

I lose that cap, in case someone figures it out.

• 47:15Amy Poehler?

And then, by the way, this is some, I should say, this is my, oh my god, Paul's peeing under the desk.

• 47:21Speaker 02

Look, this is a long podcast and I don't want to walk away and interrupt the flow, so to speak.

• 47:28Amy Poehler?

Have you ever done that, like, on a trip, peed in a bottle?

• 47:31Speaker 02

  Never.

• 47:32Amy Poehler?

I have, really? That's great to hear, because you know, you are, I mean, you're, there's not a lot of straight men, like, you're the first

• 47:39Speaker 02

  There's a few.

• 47:40Amy Poehler?

Well, I guess, I guess there's a few. But you are a straight, white male.

• 47:48Amy Poehler?

  I mean, so

• 47:50Speaker 02

  I feel seen.

• 47:51Amy Poehler?

So how's that going for you? Because it's, you know, it's not easy up there.

• 47:55Speaker 02

  I mean, by the way

• 47:55Amy Poehler?

Straight, white male, in his 50s. I mean

• 47:59Speaker 02

  Now's our time.

• 48:03Amy Poehler?

But you guys get to pee in bottles?

• 48:05Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 48:05Amy Poehler?

  On the road?

• 48:07Speaker 02

That is true. It is one of the good things.

• 48:09Amy Poehler?

You do. You get to pee in bottles. You get to do a lot of, like, you know.

• 48:12Speaker 02

Yeah, pee in a bottle, like.

• 48:13Amy Poehler?

Straight white men get to pee in bottles. Or like, and up until just five minutes ago, that was okay. Now people are like, maybe don't throw your pee bottles out on the street. And, and, um, straight white males are like, fine.

• 48:25Speaker 02

  Whatever.

• 48:25Amy Poehler?

  Whatever.

• 48:26Speaker 02

  Howard Hughes did it.

• 48:31Amy Poehler?

But, straight, you have a movie about two men and the friendship between them with the great Tim Robinson. And it's called Friendship.

• 48:40Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 48:41Amy Poehler?

And it is, I got to watch it.

• 48:43Speaker 02

  You did?

• 48:43Amy Poehler?

Yes, I watched a screener. I'm trying to do my homework as a podcast person.

• 48:47Speaker 02

  God, you're good.

• 48:48Amy Poehler?

And, um, it's so tiring. Oh, movies are so long. They're like two hours.

• 48:51Speaker 02

Gee, yeah. By the way, they're, everything's long and having to do, it's, even if it's like something you're interested in, with people, people you know, or like, it's all work.

• 49:00Amy Poehler?

Yeah, but I did really wanna watch the movie, I have to say, because I love you, I love Tim, I loved.

• 49:07Speaker 02

  Tim is, is.

• 49:08Amy Poehler?

  And Andy DeYoung is awesome.

• 49:10Speaker 02

  Isn't he great?

• 49:10Amy Poehler?

He's great. And the director and writer. And, um, uh, it is a movie, it is such a good movie about the loneliness epidemic of men, and the attempt at making a friend, and then, like, what goes wrong.

• 49:27Speaker 02

  Right.

• 49:27Amy Poehler?

Like how, I mean, it's about missing, I mean, it's Tim, Tim at his Timist, which is like, he's missing clues and he's getting them wrong.

• 49:36Speaker 02

  I know.

• 49:37Amy Poehler?

And you play this really, really funny, like, he's kind of a

• 49:45Amy Poehler?

tender-hearted nerd. He's not as cool as you think he is, as you learn through the movie.

• 49:51Speaker 02

  Not at all.

• 49:52Amy Poehler?

Okay, Friendship, though, you've done a couple movies about that.

• 49:56Speaker 02

Yeah. One thing that I feel like, um, I've always had, like, I've

• 50:06Speaker 02

been good at in my life is picking friends. Um, it's the one thing that even like, when I was in grade school, and I didn't, I was not like the, oh, I'm friends with everybody. Like, I was not that kid at all. But, um,

• 50:22Speaker 02

I could, I think I have, I could recognize like, nice people. And so, my whole life, my, all my friends were, they were kind of funny and nerdy in all the ways you want your friends to be nerdy and, and decent. And, and so, I just wanna like, you know, it's like you wanna hold on to the people you care about. And, and, and the other thing too is, you know, you and I were talking about this. It's, I think, in a way, we, we live weird lives because they're public lives. And it can be a little overwhelming and, you know, and with the noise of the world and the noise

• 51:06Speaker 02

of this job and everything else, is you kinda want your world to be smaller. Each year that goes by, I just kinda want it smaller. And I want the important stuff to count. And to me, the most important stuff that I've learned, probably because I'm now 55 years old, is that, um, oh, the pinnacle, the height of it is just being with the people that I love and, and really laughing with like, a bunch of friends. It's the greatest. It's the best thing there is. And so, that is, I just always try and cultivate that.

• 51:43Amy Poehler?

Well, we tried to cultivate it by talking to your friend John Hamm today.

• 51:49Speaker 02

So, we have a little- Another longtime friend.

• 51:51Amy Poehler?

  I know.

• 51:52Speaker 02

I've known John longer than I've known Adam.

• 51:53Amy Poehler?

And, and it sounds like you're a big brother to both. Like, you were, you're a couple of years older than both, right? So, we do this thing where we talk, we kind of talk well behind somebody's back and try to figure out stuff that they think I should ask you. So, we talked to Hamm before you came in today. And John Hamm from, from Mad Men. And for those five people that don't know who I'm talking about. And let me just explain what he was doing when we spoke to him. He was wearing a white tuxedo, his own.

• 52:27Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 52:28Amy Poehler?

He was on the set of a movie, which I think you might also have a part in at some point.

• 52:32Speaker 02

  Oh, I see.

• 52:33Amy Poehler?

Maybe, we'll see, yep. He was working on a film.

• 52:38Amy Poehler?

And he was getting off of a hot air balloon. That he had just been on. And he spoke to us in the 10 minutes before he had to go do another take. And so he spoke to us as he got on the hot air balloon about you.

• 52:52Speaker 02

  Oh, my God.

• 52:53Amy Poehler?

  It was amazing.

• 52:53Speaker 02

  That's incredible.

• 52:54Amy Poehler?

Incredible. And he was really sweetly talking about the first time you met. Long hair, you had your long hair. You had your jean jacket and you remember what was painted on it?

• 53:04Speaker 02

Yeah, that I had painted on the back of it. A Patrick Nagel. Yeah.

• 53:09Amy Poehler?

  You had painted it.

• 53:10Speaker 02

  I painted it.

• 53:11Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 53:12Speaker 02

I'm like, I need this. I want to get a good acid wash jean jacket, but it needs a Patrick Nagel print on the back. And I'm just gonna have to paint it myself.

• 53:21Amy Poehler?

Beautiful, he remembers that. He was like, he was the coolest guy ever. And he was talking about how you guys met. And it was very sweet because it made me think about both Adam and John and you have known each other a really long time.

• 53:35Speaker 02

I've known John since he was, I want to say maybe about 16 years old.

• 53:42Amy Poehler?

What was a 16 year old little ham, although was he ever short, but?

• 53:46Speaker 02

No, he was all, he might have been 70, 16, 70, around there. He was, well, talk about the coolest guy in the room. It was not me. I recognized that in him right away. He was really handsome, he was smart, he was athletic. He was all of these things and I know all of this because he was friends with the girl that I liked. That he was, and that was how.

• 54:07Amy Poehler?

  Was he with the girl?

• 54:08Speaker 02

Yeah, they were, they used to go out and then they.

• 54:10Amy Poehler?

  He got the girl.

• 54:11Speaker 02

Yeah, but they knew each other for years and years, way before me. And, but I was always a little bit like, okay, this guy.

• 54:24Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 54:25Speaker 02

Oh, how do I compete with that guy?

• 54:26Amy Poehler?

And you're like, I'm gonna grow my hair.

• 54:28Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 54:29Amy Poehler?

And I'm gonna get her away from that jock.

• 54:31Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah. I'm gonna grow my hair. Like, she's gonna look at my hair and go, wait a minute. Do you know Michael Hutchins?

• 54:38Amy Poehler?

It's funny that you say that, cuz Ham described you as like, Michael Hutchins.

• 54:43Speaker 02

Michael Hutchins, well, that's, that's high praise.

• 54:46Amy Poehler?

But you were, I, but I like what you're doing. You're like, I'm gonna go the other way. I'm gonna go, I'm gonna be the art, art guy.

• 54:51Speaker 02

Well, I was, you know, I was certainly drawn to that. And I, I think that was probably because I didn't have the ability to be the other guy.

• 54:59Amy Poehler?

Cuz Ham was the sports guy?

• 55:01Speaker 02

Ham was like, Ham was sports and he was just, you know, I remember, we were, we, I have such a vivid memory of all of us playing Trivial Pursuit. And I'm just meeting John. The girl that he was friends with, that I was dating at the time, we're all playing, she, we're playing in teams. And he would roll and immediately go like, oh, sweet, I'm gonna go to history. I'll go to yellow.

• 55:27Amy Poehler?

Oh, yeah, that's a power move.

• 55:29Speaker 02

  And then it's like.

• 55:29Amy Poehler?

  Not arts, not pink.

• 55:30Speaker 02

Not pink. I'm going to entertainment every time.

• 55:33Amy Poehler?

  Of course, entertainment.

• 55:34Speaker 02

  And he's like.

• 55:35Amy Poehler?

  Questions about Dallas.

• 55:36Speaker 02

This guy is going to yellow?

• 55:39Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 55:39Speaker 02

And then all of a sudden, it's like he gets a question, what's the biggest lake in Africa? And he's like, Victoria. Yep, yep, that's a pie, that's a pie piece. And I'm sitting there going.

• 55:47Amy Poehler?

Then he goes over to green like a real asshole.

• 55:49Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 55:50Amy Poehler?

He's like, give me all the science.

• 55:52Speaker 02

Science and nature, are ya? Are you gonna be that guy? And so I was so kind of, here's what I do remember afterward, after that game. I'm like, I should probably like, read, read some atlases. And I read an atlas.

• 56:07Amy Poehler?

To know about the world, to know where countries are?

• 56:09Speaker 02

  Yeah. Because this younger guy.

• 56:11Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 56:12Speaker 02

  Who is clearly superior.

• 56:14Amy Poehler?

And was, I probably, did he, was he, you were dating?

• 56:18Speaker 02

Yeah, but they were friends, so I was a little threatened.

• 56:21Amy Poehler?

Wow, that's so, and, and I wanna get this girl on.

• 56:27Speaker 02

Well, we eventually became like, you know, obviously, after a while, and it's a longer story, but we did become really, really tight.

• 56:36Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 56:37Speaker 02

  And really good friends.

• 56:38Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 56:39Speaker 02

And it's great. We've been really great friends since.

• 56:43Amy Poehler?

  I know, you all are.

• 56:44Speaker 02

One of the things that really makes me laugh, what makes me laugh, and it is, and I have told this story, and I have nothing to do with this story, but it's when you got the news about your doctor.

• 56:55Amy Poehler?

  I know.

• 56:55Speaker 02

  And he was hosting SNL.

• 56:59Amy Poehler?

  The best.

• 57:00Speaker 02

It's so smart, and do you tell it?

• 57:03Amy Poehler?

Yes, I mean, I think he has also told it a lot too, so I, you know, but Jon Hamm was the host, and you hosted like two weeks after, right?

• 57:14Speaker 02

Yeah, not that long afterward, yeah, yeah.

• 57:17Amy Poehler?

2008, I was pregnant with my son Archie. Hamm was the host. I was supposed to deliver the baby on Sunday, so I thought I was gonna do the show on Saturday and then deliver the baby the next day.

• 57:29Speaker 02

  Which, wow.

• 57:30Amy Poehler?

True psycho. Like, I just thought like, well, this makes sense, and I'll have the baby on Sunday. And I learned my first of many lessons of like, your kids are on their own schedule and they don't work with you. But we rehearsed all day on Friday. I was in nine sketches or something that week. Six days before I had done the Palin rap, I was still feeling pretty good. Jon was the host for the first time Friday. We're shooting like a Mad Men pre-tape. I get a call that my OB-GYN has passed away. A wonderful doctor, who was in his 80s, who was this incredible doctor. He passed away, and I burst out crying on the phone. And when you see a very, very pregnant person hysterically

• 58:14Amy Poehler?

  crying, it's very scary.

• 58:16Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 58:16Amy Poehler?

And the whole crew gets really quiet, and I go behind a partition to talk, and I find out the news, and I come out, and everyone's like, are you okay? And I said, oh my God, my OB-GYN just died. He just died, passed away of a heart attack last night. And it gets really quiet, and Hamm leans in and says to me, This is a really big deal and I need you to get your shit together. This is the first time I'm hosting and I need you to fucking.

• 58:42Speaker 02

It's a big week for me.

• 58:42Amy Poehler?

It's a big week for me and if you do, I pull it together. And I go from crying to laughing so hard that, you know, like, like squirts, like, like squirt tears come out and I start laughing, like clapping and laughing. And it was, and it was so fun and funny and, um, and again, a great example of like, life is, like, life is what you say it is, right?

• 59:04Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 59:04Amy Poehler?

It's, it's, uh, life is what you make it and what you say it is. And he made me laugh so hard and I went into labor that night and I, I think a lot of it was that.

• 59:12Speaker 02

It was because of the, the emotional roller coaster, the release of, of that. And I think it's, it's also not just a testimony to him, uh, to you, that he knew that it's like, you're gonna find this funny.

• 59:25Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 59:26Speaker 02

  And it's because that's, that's, cause that's you.

• 59:28Amy Poehler?

Yeah, I mean, I, he, he was so great in that episode and in fact, um, Seth Meyers and Lonely Island have a great podcast about, you should check that out, about that Ham episode, it's really good. Um, and they talk about all that stuff happening and how everyone had to fill in and Seth had to do update alone and it was like this incredible night.

• 59:48Speaker 02

I remember, and he did the.

• 59:50Amy Poehler?

  I know, incredible night.

• 59:52Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 59:52Amy Poehler?

Um, and, uh, and yeah, and kind of a big day for me too, um, cause I delivered a baby.

• 59:59Speaker 02

  Wait, what?

• 1:00:00Amy Poehler?

Yeah. Not to brag. Not to brag.

• 1:00:03Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 1:00:04Amy Poehler?

Um, but, uh, Ham wanted me to ask you this before we go. Do you still worry about doing a good job every time you're acting? Like, you know, and I, I think the deeper question there was like, when you get to a point where you can approach a job without that worry about whether or not it's gonna go well or you're gonna do well. Are you there and if so, how did, how and when did you get there?

• 1:00:25Speaker 02

Yeah, no, no, I, uh, I, I still worry. Um, I sometimes think like, I think I'm getting worse at this.

• 1:00:33Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:00:34Speaker 02

  Um.

• 1:00:37Speaker 02

  If you can get worse.

• 1:00:40Amy Poehler?

  Directors, listen up.

• 1:00:41Speaker 02

Yeah, no, there are times when, you know, it's such a, it's a strange thing where it's like sometimes on one day or something, you're like, oh, this is, I got it. I know how to do this.

• 1:00:55Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:55Speaker 02

I feel like I've really kind of figured some things out. Just I've, I've got my, at this point, way more than 10,000 hours in. And, and then other times, you're like,

• 1:01:08Speaker 02

wow, I'm not, I don't, I can't do that. I don't know how to do this. And I don't, and it's, the mystery of it is a little frustrating and bewildering. And so I do feel,

• 1:01:26Speaker 02

like, I don't have a handle on it all the time, but I do feel also more relaxed about aspects of it. I know how some of this stuff, kind of just the, the technical sides of things, how they work. I understand editing. I understand how, like, I can, like, I can do a scene. It's like, I'm picturing it as how the editor will see it, or a director, and where you would do a cut point. And these kind, certain things you just learn over time. But I, but I don't ever feel 100% comfortable. I don't, I don't think.

• 1:02:07Amy Poehler?

Do you ever watch a scene and think, I wish I did that differently?

• 1:02:11Speaker 02

Oh, yeah. Yeah. Certainly. And you have that thing on there, like, in the drive home, you're like, oh, why didn't I, you know, say that? Or?

• 1:02:21Amy Poehler?

I have a scene in Wet Hot that makes me think of that, is when, the scene where we're like, out in the town. I remember, like, we're all supposed to be like, you know, it's that joke that we go out in the town for one day.

• 1:02:31Speaker 02

  For the hour.

• 1:02:32Amy Poehler?

For the hour. That's right. We go out for the hour, and then we all turn into, you know, drug addicts, basically. By the end, we're in, we're in a flop house.

• 1:02:38Speaker 02

You're sitting next to the crackhead. Yeah.

• 1:02:40Amy Poehler?

Yep. And we're smoking crack at the end of the hour. And I, I, I sometimes, especially early on, and maybe still, there's just times when I went pretty big. And, you know, I think, I think back and I just think like, I wish I just like dialed things down a little bit. I just, I made some choices, sometimes they worked, but sometimes they just, I, it would have been maybe, eh, that's one scene that I look at, I'm like, I wish I had just gone a little smaller and I think it would have been funnier. Is there anything that comes to mind that you?

• 1:03:15Speaker 02

Yes, here's why I say that though. I, I think you're wrong, um, and, and-

• 1:03:20Amy Poehler?

What are you gonna say, I'm right? What are you gonna say?

• 1:03:23Speaker 02

I think you're hilarious in that scene.

• 1:03:25Amy Poehler?

Thank you, but it's a little big. It's a little big.

• 1:03:30Speaker 02

I, I, sometimes think, you know, people say less is more, sometimes more is more. And, uh, it's, it doesn't, you go big if it's like coming from a, a real place. I, I think that was, you were hilarious in that scene.

• 1:03:48Amy Poehler?

  Please stop yelling at me.

• 1:03:50Speaker 02

And don't you ever, look at me.

• 1:03:52Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 1:03:53Speaker 02

  Emmy, look at me.

• 1:03:55Amy Poehler?

  I am.

• 1:03:56Speaker 02

  I don't wanna-

• 1:03:59Amy Poehler?

  I'm looking at you.

• 1:04:00Speaker 02

Okay, you're not looking at me, you're looking at the table.

• 1:04:02Amy Poehler?

  I'm looking at you.

• 1:04:04Speaker 02

You're not. This eye is kind of looking at me and that eye is looking at the fake food.

• 1:04:12Amy Poehler?

Paul, sometimes I think I go too big. I'm worried, worried about it.

• 1:04:15Speaker 02

That is such a, that is such a good, God, you still surprise me. I don't think I've seen you do that. It's like that, just, just the weird-

• 1:04:23Amy Poehler?

Just, or you just look right over some-

• 1:04:25Speaker 02

It's like this, it's like doing that weird thing, it's like there's no real, um, there's no, there's nothing particularly like specific about it, it's just like something's off, but you don't really know.

• 1:04:35Amy Poehler?

  I don't know what you're talking about.

• 1:04:36Speaker 02

You know, it's like you, the eye, like, that is, that is, you've clearly, like, you need corrective lenses, but you're not wearing them.

• 1:04:43Amy Poehler?

Just my, I'm, when I get tired, my eye gets a little-

• 1:04:45Speaker 02

Yeah, gets a little wonky, got a little wonky eye.

• 1:04:47Amy Poehler?

  And you look like-

• 1:04:48Speaker 02

I just have a thing with my lips.

• 1:04:50Amy Poehler?

You got a little surgery? You just got a-

• 1:04:52Speaker 02

It's not that I got a little surgery, it's maybe that I need a little surgery.

• 1:04:58Amy Poehler?

I love you, Paul. Thank you for doing this so much. It means so much. Thank you for doing it.

• 1:05:03Speaker 02

Oh, my God. I'm so happy to do it. You're great at it.

• 1:05:08Amy Poehler?

Check out Friendship Coming Out in theaters? No, there's no theaters. But theaters!

• 1:05:12Speaker 02

  Theaters, but yeah.

• 1:05:14Amy Poehler?

  Oh, my God!

• 1:05:15Speaker 02

They still exist. I don't know if people go.

• 1:05:18Amy Poehler?

  No, they don't go.

• 1:05:19Speaker 02

  I'll tell you, though.

• 1:05:20Amy Poehler?

  No.

• 1:05:20Speaker 02

They should go for... You, you, look, you know me.

• 1:05:24Amy Poehler?

Why do I want to go in my living room? And my couch?

• 1:05:27Speaker 02

I don't promote anything. I do, it's the lamest thing ever. I don't ever want to talk about it. We didn't even have to talk about this. But I will say, Tim Robinson is frickin' hilarious.

• 1:05:37Amy Poehler?

  He's a genius.

• 1:05:38Speaker 02

He's got, he really is like kind of the guy.

• 1:05:39Amy Poehler?

  He's hilarious.

• 1:05:40Speaker 02

I got to see this movie in a theater with people, and I was like, oh, my God. I forgot what it's like to see something that like everyone is laughing at, like, and having that kind of shared experience. And it was really, it was, it made me so happy and also kind, and like nostalgic and like almost sad. It's like, oh, yeah, this used to exist.

• 1:06:07Amy Poehler?

Remember, like, I still love this, too, when you watch previews? And there's always some joker that's like, no, thanks. You know, it was like, ha, ha, ha. You know, like, oh, God, I love that. You were just someone going like, woo!

• 1:06:21Speaker 02

I remember as a teenager seeing Footloose.

• 1:06:25Amy Poehler?

Oh, I saw that in the theater eight, seven or eight times.

• 1:06:29Speaker 02

I saw it in the theater. It was so good. I went back and watched it the next night. I went twice, yeah, yeah. So many times, that movie, in the theater.

• 1:06:35Amy Poehler?

I gotta get Kevin Bacon on here.

• 1:06:37Speaker 02

Oh, you got, you've got to.

• 1:06:39Amy Poehler?

  Footloose is so...

• 1:06:40Speaker 02

Well, Ren McCormick in the, in the...

• 1:06:41Amy Poehler?

  Jump back.

• 1:06:43Speaker 02

So, I remember this scene where John Lithgow hits...

• 1:06:50Amy Poehler?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:06:50Speaker 02

  His daughter.

• 1:06:51Amy Poehler?

  Oh, Laurie Singer.

• 1:06:52Speaker 02

Laurie Singer, and hits her. And then it's shocking. And it cuts to the next scene, and he's, feels terrible. And he's saying to his wife, Diane Weest, "I've never had anyone in my entire life." And somebody in the back row goes, "Liar!"

• 1:07:15Speaker 02

And the entire theater lost their shit. And I was crying. Like, that's the funniest.

• 1:07:24Amy Poehler?

  Liar.

• 1:07:25Speaker 02

Liar. And to this day, I still think of it.

• 1:07:31Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:07:31Speaker 02

And it's like, I was 14 years old, whatever, however old I was, maybe older than that, but like,

• 1:07:38Speaker 02

you don't get that at home, on your couch.

• 1:07:40Amy Poehler?

You don't get it at home.

• 1:07:41Speaker 02

  You don't get it on.

• 1:07:42Amy Poehler?

That's what Paul and I want to encourage people to shout out at the movie theater.

• 1:07:46Speaker 02

  That's right, that's what it's there for.

• 1:07:47Amy Poehler?

Say whatever you want. You know what? You know, the fabric of society is fraying. Just say, do.

• 1:07:52Speaker 02

Say whatever you want. And look, if you can't think, if you're in the movie theater with people and you can't think of something to say, just get on your phone, Google some things.

• 1:08:00Amy Poehler?

  Totally.

• 1:08:00Speaker 02

  Look, scroll.

• 1:08:01Amy Poehler?

Or shine up, or take your, put your flashlight on.

• 1:08:04Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 1:08:04Amy Poehler?

And try to find somebody else who's enjoying the movie.

• 1:08:06Speaker 02

Yeah, go like, hey, what should we yell out?

• 1:08:08Amy Poehler?

Yes, or, you know, if you're like, if you really like something, run up to the front.

• 1:08:12Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:08:12Amy Poehler?

And stand in front of the screen and go, I really like this.

• 1:08:15Speaker 02

How about this? What do you guys think?

• 1:08:17Amy Poehler?

  Anything to get you there.

• 1:08:18Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:08:19Amy Poehler?

Oh, my God, okay, I can't wait to go to the movies. All right, love you, Paul.

• 1:08:22Speaker 02

  Love you, Amy.

• 1:08:22Amy Poehler?

You're the best. Thank you for doing this.

• 1:08:34Amy Poehler?

You know, I realized with both Jon Hamm and Paul Rudd, I mentioned Janine Garofalo, who was one of my first friends in New York. And, like I said, kind of the first person that I met who I had seen on TV first. And, you know, I just want to remind everybody to take a listen and a watch. Janine has done so much great comedy and remains such a sharp and funny,

• 1:09:01Amy Poehler?

deeply interesting, curious person who's, you know, still performing and still,

• 1:09:09Amy Poehler?

you know, she's just like a Gen X legend, Janine. We used to care about selling out, and she never did. And, um, Janine was always so kind and so helpful to a lot of young comedians and actors and people, myself included. She was... Instrumental for a lot of us in, you know, I don't know, feeling cool and feeling like we were a part of a club. So watch Truth About Cats and Dogs, watch Romy and Michelle, you know, Reality Bites, watch The Larry Sanders Show. Janine is just consistently good and such a good actor and so funny. And I'm just feeling nostalgic for our times

• 1:09:53Amy Poehler?

together and maybe hope she wants to come here and talk to me. So, thank you for listening to another episode and we will see you soon.

• 1:10:04Amy Poehler?
