• 1:01Speaker 03

The Mormons moved on to native land and were like a penis-shaped scar. Someone in your fucking family.

• 1:07Drew Afualo?

Someone, yeah. Have fun with that.

• 1:09Speaker 03

  Have fun with that, bitch.

• 1:18Drew Afualo?

Hey, everyone, and welcome back to another episode of the Comment Section Show. Sorry, me, your fave, everybody knows me, who cares about me? Onto the guest. Today, we have the iconic, the hilarious, the unbelievably intelligent, Reb Masel.

• 1:34Speaker 03

Can't tell you enough how much I love you. I'm only on just to meet you. I'm leaving in five minutes.

• 1:39Drew Afualo?

I'm honored. And I'm getting an episode out of it, so thank you, I appreciate you.

• 1:42Speaker 03

I mean, when millions of people online want something, I want it more. I get it.

• 1:47Drew Afualo?

I'm better than them, so I want to return the sentiment. Huge fan. You and I have been online besties for a minute.

• 1:54Speaker 03

  Absolutely, yes.

• 1:55Drew Afualo?

We've been locked in for a while.

• 1:56Speaker 03

I think we've been, when we became mutuals, I shit my pants. I think everyone in my group chat, all my gays in Dallas, were like, "You're lying. You're fucking joking." Like, where can you text her right now? I'm like, "Well, that's not really how it works. That's not really how it works." But I remember it was like 2021. One, I think. When you were, it was like all your videos, both of our videos were like a little blurry now when you look at them.

• 2:15Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 2:15Speaker 03

  So fucking old.

• 2:16Drew Afualo?

And then you're, you look and you're like, huh.

• 2:18Speaker 03

Yeah, you're like, oh, and both of our voices too, I realized, we, I don't know if our balls dropped throughout this process.

• 2:23Drew Afualo?

Wait, can we, let's talk about it.

• 2:25Speaker 03

  High as shit.

• 2:27Drew Afualo?

Let's talk about it, because when Bowman was on, I told Bowman too, I'm like, something humiliating about looking at my past ones is because since I was a journalism student and I did broadcast journalism in my major, I had a really, really mean fucking professor who told me that I should change the tenor of my, like, I should try to raise the octave of it when I'm on camera because it's more appealing, because it sounds more feminine. So I was like, no, for sure, for sure, for sure. When she told me, I was pissed, but I was like, I need to graduate and I'm taking that degree with me and she hated me. So she was like, looking for reasons to not let me pass. And so I was, I would literally sound like Mickey Mouse when I watched them back. I'm like, ew! Because that's, my voice sits at a lower register naturally, so does yours.

• 3:09Speaker 03

Yeah, no, it makes no sense because the, I feel like almost the exact opposite was kind of pitched to us through law school, lawyering, whatever is, you, oh, you don't want to sound like a woman. The moment it comes out of a woman's mouth, no one's gonna believe it.

• 3:21Drew Afualo?

All for the same reasons, which is misogyny.

• 3:23Speaker 03

Yeah, I mean, listen, look and listen. And I think my voice got deeper just out of probably spite too, because I like,

• 3:31Drew Afualo?

  Oh, I'm sure.

• 3:32Speaker 03

I like making men uncomfortable and when I'm taller and my voice is deeper, that's a crazy one-two punch.

• 3:37Drew Afualo?

  Get into it, girl.

• 3:37Speaker 03

In a courtroom, that's wild for them to have to face. Right? Crazy town. And then they're going home to a divorce and a kid who hasn't spoken to them in two months. I'm like, yeah.

• 3:46Drew Afualo?

That's just the circle of life.

• 3:47Speaker 03

Yeah, so if I'm gonna talk like this, then I'm gonna talk like this, if that makes them pissed.

• 3:52Drew Afualo?

But your voice is higher in your old ones, yeah?

• 3:54Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 3:54Drew Afualo?

  Like mine?

• 3:55Speaker 03

  I'm like this!

• 3:55Drew Afualo?

Yeah, that's how it sounds. I hate it.

• 3:58Speaker 03

I'm, I'm like this, I'm like, how the fuck did y'all follow me?

• 4:01Drew Afualo?

I know, I got the same.

• 4:02Speaker 03

This shit is not ASMR. Like, y'all are like, do an audiobook, not with that fucking ASMR. No chance.

• 4:08Drew Afualo?

Well, I'd love to know how you got on TikTok. Like, what made you want to start joining, start making content?

• 4:13Speaker 03

Like everything, horrible. I think Kay said this in your last episode, you know, shitty life circumstance, the most Ever been in my life, the most physically, mentally ill, and then my little sister bullying me, which, you know, always makes me do something. She's like, you need to get on TikTok, right? But I remember in early days, early days love, the video that I posted that was like the viral one for lawyer related things is I was in my lawyer fit, outfit, whatever, and I made a TikTok and a bunch of the comment, you know, like half the comments were like, oh, my God, yay, you know, a girl is in law. I'm like, we're here. Oh, God, we've been here.

• 4:52Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 4:53Speaker 03

And then a bunch of men, you know, boys, whoever yelling at me. And I started responding to them easily. I think one of them said, oh, you know, wouldn't it be, it's, it would be a travesty if, you know, a woman judge was the one to decide your fate. And I think I responded and said, well, didn't your mom decide your fate when she decided not to abort you? And jury still out on whether that was the right choice, right? Like, I don't know.

• 5:15Drew Afualo?

Based off this interaction, I'm gonna lean towards no.

• 5:18Speaker 03

I'm gonna lean to absolutely not. Yeah. And so then, you know, things just kept, I kept posting my bullshit, the same as we always do. And yeah, here we are. And obviously been inspired by also so many other people on the platform. I think a lot of people talk about, you know, when you're viral, you have a following or whatnot, how it started, but I think what kept it going, honestly, instead of just saying, okay, you, I mean, there's always a point, I don't know how it was for you, where you were like, okay, if this went away tomorrow, I wouldn't really give a fuck, right? Or like, oh, like sometimes you wake up and you're like, ah, I don't want to do this anymore.

• 5:52Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 5:53Speaker 03

Like what kept you on it, right? Like what kept you doing it? And for me, it was all of the other people on the app, including you, who were in their own power and in their own individualism, who were doing the damn thing, no matter what it was, whether it be like shitting on men online or doing their fucking worms, their get ready with me's, you know, and looking great doing it.

• 6:15Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 6:16Speaker 03

I was like, yeah, like if, if someone's gonna represent. This culture, this profession, or this sense of humor, I guess I can be one of them, that's fine. Um, and hopefully amplify the voices that matter too in this space. Um, but yeah, and also it's just fun, just funny and fun.

• 6:32Drew Afualo?

Well, it was very apparent to me at, in the beginning, other than you being a lawyer, because I didn't need to know that to know that you're fucking smart. And I told Kay this too, I love a smart bitch. Oh, I love a bitch who's smart, and I love a bitch who's eloquent and can talk fast and use big words. That's my type of shit.

• 6:47Speaker 03

  Yeah, that's my bitch.

• 6:49Drew Afualo?

And it's you, that's why I think you love Kay too, the same way I do. Cause we're all twins, really, the three of us.

• 6:55Speaker 03

Oh, I love her down. I love that so much. And you know, men too, it's like, I love when, when really cool, stunning, beautiful women, unassuming women, just eat the fuck out of a sentence, just chew on every word, every vowel, and the men in the comments are misspelling the word rhetoric, like they can't even fucking breathe. Yeah, they're just shook.

• 7:16Drew Afualo?

  Their favorite words.

• 7:17Speaker 03

Yeah, and or also, you know, they, they comment and they're like, oh, you know, she's all beauty, no brains. I'm like, well, you've been living with neither and we haven't, we've left you be.

• 7:25Drew Afualo?

You're, you're doing okay, right? You're still breathing.

• 7:27Speaker 03

  You're still logging on, yeah.

• 7:29Drew Afualo?

Yeah, I don't, yeah, I don't typically get the beautiful ones.

• 7:32Speaker 03

  Me personally?

• 7:34Drew Afualo?

I don't typically get the, well, sometimes I do. I, and they make me more mad than regular hate. That was gonna be my next question is like, how has it been dealing with hate? Cause I feel like you get similar hate to me, because we're like, existing in the same neighborhood on TikTok. We kind of come across the same shit, but.

• 7:48Speaker 03

  Uh, yeah, we.

• 7:49Drew Afualo?

  From men mostly, I assume.

• 7:50Speaker 03

We're right and we stand on business and.

• 7:52Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 7:53Speaker 03

  Yeah, like.

• 7:53Drew Afualo?

I don't want to be right all the time.

• 7:55Speaker 03

  It's daunting.

• 7:56Drew Afualo?

  They make it so easy.

• 7:58Speaker 03

They make it so easy. And also, it's like, it's like, it's not that, I mean, it's not that hard to be this right. You know what I mean? Like, you can just read a fuck it, like, read a book, open Google one time.

• 8:07Drew Afualo?

Like dead ass. I did, one of my first, like. I would say like when I was building it like and I was doing videos like every fucking day there was always like someone new to pick on. Uh, man, miss it sometimes.

• 8:19Speaker 03

Yeah. And then TikTok was like, you can't bully people anymore.

• 8:22Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 8:22Speaker 03

They'll be like the straight alt-right.

• 8:25Drew Afualo?

Oh, yeah. Then they they snared me because they gave me that blue checkmark and then I they were like, actually, you're not allowed to do this anymore. And I was like, well, fuck.

• 8:32Speaker 03

  Perfect. Yeah.

• 8:33Drew Afualo?

Well, not what am I? You guys clipped my wings. Now what am I supposed to do?

• 8:35Speaker 03

  Yep.

• 8:35Drew Afualo?

Um, there was a guy that the, you know, they love circulating pseudoscience as if it's fact. And then they talk about like pair bonding.

• 8:42Speaker 03

  Mm-hmm.

• 8:42Drew Afualo?

And then I was like, do you guys know where pair bonding? Like, does anyone know where that comes from? Because me thinks no.

• 8:48Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 8:48Drew Afualo?

Uh, it comes from fucking birds. So like, yeah, bird brains and human brains, different.

• 8:55Speaker 03

  Mm-hmm.

• 8:55Drew Afualo?

Because their whole thing was that women shouldn't sleep with more people because their pair bonding skills get damaged. Well, good news, she's not a bird. So you don't need to worry about that.

• 9:03Speaker 03

  Great news.

• 9:04Drew Afualo?

And what's crazy too is that the pair bonding psycho- psychology in birds that they noticed was that female birds would link up with ones that would carry on their strongest like genetics. So like.

• 9:15Speaker 03

And you are the fourth most valuable.

• 9:17Drew Afualo?

You're not getting picked in that world either. In that, in the world of birds, you're also getting left behind.

• 9:21Speaker 03

You're not even employee of the month at GameStop, babes. Like, people are getting picked over you for that.

• 9:26Drew Afualo?

Yeah. If you were a bird, you'd be ignored.

• 9:28Speaker 03

  Please. Yeah. You'd be ignored.

• 9:31Drew Afualo?

So how is it? How has it been? Because you're obviously, you're a working woman too.

• 9:36Speaker 03

  Yep.

• 9:36Drew Afualo?

So how has it been when you started growing your like platform online? How was that kind of melding with your professional world?

• 9:42Speaker 03

Yeah. I mean, it, I've kept it super separate.

• 9:46Drew Afualo?

  Which is good.

• 9:46Speaker 03

Which, yeah, and I've taken strides to do that, which I think that people do have this idea that, oh, if you're gonna be or hold yourself out to be a professional online or, you know, your day job online, then it's just you automatically need to cross those worlds and do a day in the life and, you know, have me in your boss's office, like doing a, doing a fucking story time like that. No, like I don't do that. I don't have anyone in my videos for a reason. I don't want people to connect where I work or who I work with, whatever, and with the cases that I'm on. And I got an A in ethics, bitch. I know how this lawyer search go. I'm there like, well, isn't this privilege? Isn't this competent? Whatever. I'm like, y'all are morons. No. Uh, first of all, y'all are dumb as hell.

• 10:24Drew Afualo?

  Yeah. Media literacy is gone.

• 10:27Speaker 03

Exactly, and it gone. And so it's been great because it didn't, I've never been recognized by a judge that has been hearing my case or like lawyers across the, like opposing counsel before. Maybe one time potentially when it was a younger girl who kinda looked at me weird and then just didn't say anything. And I don't think they would have. Yeah, but a lot of people in my office, I mean, one of my first days, oh god, I almost shit, I was peeing my pants. My first day as one of my new firms, I get, you know, I'm literally being set up, like quite literally, like sitting down at my desk and shit. And they're like, press this number and this is your phone and it has your name on it and whatever. And I immediately get a phone call in my office. I'm like, okay, this is weird.

• 11:09Speaker 03

And I answer and it's one of the partners, like the big named on the fucking nameplate partners. Down the hall and he goes, is this Reb Masel? And I immediately was like, oh, we're fucked. I was like, we're done. I was like packing my shit up. I'm throwing, I'm scooping.

• 11:22Drew Afualo?

Girl, well, I thank you all for the opportunity.

• 11:25Speaker 03

Oh, I'm scooping shit into a bag. I'm like, well, I'm taking the free souvenirs, fuck that. And he, he, I mean, and I said, yes, and immediately hung up the phone. I hear slowly pounding steps because he's bigger, right? He's a bigger man, pounding steps, like flipped around into my office and goes, you need to show me how to set up this fucking ring light. And I'm like, perfect.

• 11:46Drew Afualo?

You're like, King, let me help you.

• 11:49Speaker 03

Going to his office, we're setting up his ring light. He's like, how do we, we need to get the, you know, we put the firm on the map, et cetera, et cetera. And I'm just like, okay, Jesus Christ. So yeah, so people assume that I walk into a firm and everyone doesn't take me serious. I'm like, you would be shocked the number of clowns that are in this field. Great ones and bad ones. I mean, you, first thing I learned when I went into this field is 80% of us are really dumb, which is fine. But, so you know, someone's gotta be the bomb.

• 12:13Drew Afualo?

Which is probably the case for most professions, to be quite honest with you.

• 12:16Speaker 03

I was thinking about that the other day. I was like, you never walk into a doctor's office and go, you know, what rank were you at? In your college, in your med school?

• 12:24Drew Afualo?

  No, you just kinda trust.

• 12:25Speaker 03

What were your grades? What was your transcript? You just say, well, they're a doctor. So, and so now every time my mom will try to be like setting me up with people, well, he's, he's a lawyer. I'm like, ooh, I'm like, okay, let me see his transcript. Like, let me see what grade he got in fucking Civ Pro. Like, you're kidding? Where does he work? You know what I mean? Like, oh, he's like, oh, yeah.

• 12:43Drew Afualo?

I'm so curious, did you always want to be a lawyer?

• 12:45Speaker 03

  No.

• 12:46Drew Afualo?

Are you just argumentative? Cause that was why I thought I wanted to be a lawyer.

• 12:49Speaker 03

See, yeah, I know. I didn't know what I wanted to do. I just liked school. I was good at school and I liked school and I liked, I loved being right.

• 12:57Drew Afualo?

Me too. God, you're so me.

• 12:59Speaker 03

  Right?

• 13:00Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, you're so me.

• 13:01Speaker 03

Um, yeah, no, I, I just love doing that. And so I, you know, I just wanted to have fun in college. Went to UC Santa Barbara, Go Gauchos, love that damn school.

• 13:11Drew Afualo?

  Tea.

• 13:12Speaker 03

Um, I shotgun a lot of beers on a lot of decks. Um, didn't really go to class much. My G, I'm, my GPA was not that great. And I came home, I went up, I studied abroad, you know, and then never stopped talking about it for the next 10 years of my fucking life.

• 13:25Drew Afualo?

  That's your culture now.

• 13:26Speaker 03

Yeah, that's my culture. Um, and then, yeah, I came home, I quite literally got home and it was the start of my senior year of, of college and my roommate, Talia, came home with LSAT books and I was like, ooh, I should probably think about, thinking about my career and shit. I was thinking I was just gonna keep going to school. Yeah, I mean, I was just gonna like go to grad school, whatever, get my masters in history or some shit. And I, she said, yeah, you should just take the LSAT. So I did. And it worked out. I got a scholarship based on the LSAT score. Cause that GPA, I was not, mm, I need to.

• 13:53Drew Afualo?

That's tea, okay. Look at you.

• 13:55Speaker 03

So, so yeah, that's how it worked out. And I don't have family who are lawyers. I don't have any like legal background other than that before law school. And everyone around you is, well, my dad, you know, best plaintiff's attorney in the, in LA county. Oh, well, I've worked at a firm for 10 years.

• 14:11Drew Afualo?

  You sound so nepotism.

• 14:12Speaker 03

  Right, exactly. Oh, exactly.

• 14:14Drew Afualo?

  I'm happy for you. Congrats.

• 14:15Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah. Amazing, perfect. Like.

• 14:17Drew Afualo?

  Congratulations.

• 14:18Speaker 03

Congratulations. You still dress like shit. Like you still, that suit still doesn't fit your fucking shoulders. Like, be fucking serious. Listening to people chirp about how they have a better chance of doing better in law school because they, you know, have all this stuff. And then you get to law school and you, they tell you, oh, it's anonymous grading, first of all, and a hundred percent of your grade is the final. And it's like four hours and it's half multiple choice, half essay. Uh, and that's, that's it. And you're curved. You're curved against everyone in your class. Uh, good fucking luck. Only 10 people are allowed to get As. And I started getting As. And all the people who were loud as hell started getting real quiet by the end of the year.

• 14:53Drew Afualo?

  Tea.

• 14:53Speaker 03

So, yeah, so if you want to go to law school and you don't have any legal background, you can still do it. And be fine.

• 14:59Drew Afualo?

And be really good at it.

• 15:00Speaker 03

  Yeah, really good at it.

• 15:01Drew Afualo?

Do you feel like you found your calling being a lawyer?

• 15:02Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 15:03Drew Afualo?

  I love that.

• 15:04Speaker 03

  Definitely.

• 15:04Drew Afualo?

  I think that's incredible.

• 15:05Speaker 03

  Yours?

• 15:06Drew Afualo?

  Hell, yeah.

• 15:07Speaker 03

  Oh yeah.

• 15:08Drew Afualo?

Bad bitch. You know what's funny is like when I was in college, I thought about doing law, but more specifically entertainment law. Like I was like, I feel like I could really get in there. More specifically because I was thinking, and we have this in common too. Our dads used to play sports professionally.

• 15:21Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 15:21Drew Afualo?

My dad was an NFL player for a minute and yours was an NBA player.

• 15:24Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 15:25Drew Afualo?

Which is why you're also a tall queen like me.

• 15:27Speaker 03

  Yep.

• 15:27Drew Afualo?

  I love that.

• 15:28Speaker 03

  Definitely. I mean.

• 15:29Drew Afualo?

Right now Reb's taller than me, which is rare and we both have huge shoes on. So there's that. But right now her shoes are higher than mine. So she's taller than me, which is crazy.

• 15:36Speaker 03

  Yep.

• 15:36Drew Afualo?

  I love that.

• 15:37Speaker 03

I love it. I know. We're both gonna be fucked with our feet in like 10, 20 years, like on my, on, I'm gone. People will be like, oh my God, you're wearing four inch heels in court. I'm like, I need to be intimidating and I know.

• 15:47Drew Afualo?

  I love being tall.

• 15:48Speaker 03

I love it so much. I love it so much.

• 15:50Drew Afualo?

I used to hate it when I was younger, but that was my internalized misogyny. And then once I let that go, I was like, I love being tall. So now I always wear platforms or heels.

• 15:58Speaker 03

  Always, always.

• 15:59Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 15:59Speaker 03

But I just know shit's gonna get real crazy, but thank God. I'm like, I'm look, I'm not a foot model. Like I'm not selling, you know, I'm not showing my feet for free on the ground. So I figure I'll be fine.

• 16:09Drew Afualo?

But we have such similar origin stories. But I think I went into, I was thinking about entertainment law because my dad kinda got dicked on his deals. And so I was thinking, I was like, I'd love to be a lawyer for athletes who are like fighting for the athlete as opposed to like for the organization.

• 16:26Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 16:26Drew Afualo?

So that's kind of, kinda what I entertained and I also love school.

• 16:30Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 16:30Drew Afualo?

  Wait, what sign are you?

• 16:32Speaker 03

  Sagittarius.

• 16:32Drew Afualo?

  Okay.

• 16:33Speaker 03

  Violently Sag.

• 16:34Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, I'm a Sag rising.

• 16:35Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 16:36Drew Afualo?

And both my mom and sister are both Sagis. I fire women all in my life.

• 16:39Speaker 03

  Love that.

• 16:40Drew Afualo?

Love that for us, but I think once I found out, I was like, oh, wait.

• 17:49Drew Afualo?

  Journalism gets me more attention.

• 17:50Speaker 03

  Yep.

• 17:51Drew Afualo?

  I'm gonna do that.

• 17:51Speaker 03

  Absolutely.

• 17:52Drew Afualo?

  That's what I was like.

• 17:53Speaker 03

  Absolutely.

• 17:53Drew Afualo?

What gets me looked at the most?

• 17:55Speaker 03

  Mm-hmm.

• 17:55Drew Afualo?

Being on camera. I'm gonna do that.

• 17:56Speaker 03

  Love that. 100%.

• 17:58Drew Afualo?

But I still went into sports because I felt like, you know, I think looking back, I'm like, oh, I could redeem my dad and like, still make a name for us. Turns out they don't want either of us there. They said, hey, get the hell out of here.

• 18:08Speaker 03

  Both of your actors.

• 18:09Drew Afualo?

Yeah, they said, what's her last name? Fired.

• 18:11Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 18:12Drew Afualo?

  Fucking bitch.

• 18:12Speaker 03

  Fuck.

• 18:12Drew Afualo?

  I was like, man.

• 18:14Speaker 03

  No.

• 18:14Drew Afualo?

When I got fired, my dad was like, man, they really don't want us in there.

• 18:17Speaker 03

  Yeah, at all.

• 18:18Drew Afualo?

  Fired generational.

• 18:21Speaker 03

Generational hate, that's what we like to call that. Sometimes I think when bad shit happens to me like that, where I'm like, that's just weird, you know, for something bad like that to happen twice. You have a Mormon side of your family and I have a Mormon side of my family. I'm not Mormon, she's Mormon. Don't, like, don't all freak out on me, like, whatever.

• 18:36Drew Afualo?

That's just part of our lore.

• 18:37Speaker 03

But I think, you know, listen, Native American curses, I believe in that shit. And they had every right and every reason. I've seen holes, bitch, alright? She, listen, like, they curse and it stays, it stays. And I know for a fact that every time, anytime I get a flat tire, anytime, you know, something happens to me that happened to my mother like the month before, I'm like, you know what, this is just what, this is what we're owed. This is the karma that we were given 150 years ago when we were not in our own business in the fucking American West.

• 19:04Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 19:05Speaker 03

And that's fair. So the NFL was, was telling you basically, listen, girl, this is the worst that could happen to you.

• 19:11Drew Afualo?

Yeah, they're saying, you want to be a part of this, this detrifying system? Just kidding.

• 19:14Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 19:15Drew Afualo?

  But yeah, no, for real.

• 19:16Speaker 03

Yeah, you're gonna be rich and famous, get the fuck out, though.

• 19:18Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 19:18Speaker 03

Right now, we're gonna cry. Right now, we're gonna make you cry.

• 19:20Drew Afualo?

I've said before, like, I think, I always believed, like, my, that's my ancestors. When I'm not listening, they gotta do something crazy. Crazy.

• 19:27Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 19:27Drew Afualo?

So like, and because I'm someone who loves school, I loved like being the best at things. That's like, when people ask me like, how did you get past this like male validation thing? My validation has never come from men. It's almost always come from me being better than anyone at anything.

• 19:41Speaker 03

Competitive. And I got that from my father. You probably got it from your fuck. Like.

• 19:46Drew Afualo?

I actually got mine from my mom.

• 19:47Speaker 03

  Okay, incredible. Love that.

• 19:49Drew Afualo?

My dad is so like, whatever.

• 19:51Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 19:51Drew Afualo?

  Everything.

• 19:52Speaker 03

My, my dad is not. My dad's never, I mean, wiffle ball games. I have scars. Like that shit was not, that shit was serious.

• 19:58Drew Afualo?

I know. There are certain things that my family's not allowed to do together anymore. Like, we're not allowed to go kart together anymore. Everyone's banned because my mom almost killed me. My mom literally almost killed me when we go karded one time. One time. We went as a family one fucking time. My mom almost killed me. My brother cried and then I lost three acrylics that day and then my dad was like.

• 20:17Speaker 03

  But you won.

• 20:17Drew Afualo?

  No one's going anymore.

• 20:19Speaker 03

  You're telling me you won?

• 20:20Drew Afualo?

No one's, we're, we're banned from go-karting. I have to, I banned dodgeball. We're not allowed to play that anymore.

• 20:26Speaker 03

  Okay, perfect.

• 20:27Drew Afualo?

That's my fiance and my mom are too intense about dodgeball, but my fiance has a really, he has, he, he gets a very weird joy out of throwing things at people. So he's too much.

• 20:39Speaker 03

Yeah, fair. My boyfriend tore his MCL ACL playing dod- literally playing like a company dodgeball game. He like slid, he slid home a little too fucking hard.

• 20:51Speaker 03

And I'm like, I heard, I was like, oh, where'd you go? You know, cause of course I see that fat fucking scar. You know, and I'm thinking, oh, you know, here's the story of like, I would have gone pro type shit. And then we were still on that stage where I was like, side, you know, he's still proving himself out of prison. I was like, mm, oh, so what's your, what's the, he was like, no, I went too fucking hard. And then I drank White Claws for about an hour and a half after just sitting there by the cooler and he had to carry me to my car and I went to the hospital. Like, what else? I'm like, oh, that's embarrassing as fuck. He's like, yeah, super embarrassing.

• 21:19Drew Afualo?

  That's like really humiliating.

• 21:20Speaker 03

  Yeah, no, horrifying.

• 21:21Drew Afualo?

  At a company dodgeball game.

• 21:23Speaker 03

Dodgeball game. And I know a guy, I mean, and law firms too. We, I mean, people are like, you know, law firms, you imagine everyone's super, which they are, but people, what you imagine, right? Is like, you know, a bunch of. White dudes in a room in suits jerking each other off, which is super fair. Like that does first

• 21:41Drew Afualo?

  That's part of it.

• 21:42Speaker 03

Right, that's part of it. But, but I mean, people work hard, lawyer, being lawyer is working hard and playing so much fucking harder. Like we had, every single firm I ever worked at, keg in the conference room, multiple kegs rotating tap. We'd get an email every Monday. This week it's an IPA, this week it's space dust.

• 21:59Drew Afualo?

  I can only imagine.

• 21:59Speaker 03

These are the notes. Oh yeah, but also people, I mean alcoholism, like alcoholism, drug, but like, you know, I remember, I remember the first day of our law school orientation, they, you know, were like, yay, congrats everyone, you've made it, right? They're like, yeah, no, look how smart all of you are. We're so happy you're here. Here's a big slideshow. Like you guys literally are the shit. You're like the top whatever percent of the world. You're better than everyone. Next slide, you know what you're also number one at? Alcoholism, divorce, drug addiction, abuse, anxiety, da da da, just listing all, suicide, like listing all the things that happened to lawyers. Cause it's a super hard job. And then slide after that was, so we have therapy dogs. Oh, I was like, oh, perfect. That'll fix that.

• 22:37Drew Afualo?

  Sandwich it.

• 22:38Speaker 03

Yeah, that'll do it. But you know, um, one of the, so basically we have happy hours like three times a week. I'm like, I'm like, I can't fucking do this shit. I can't, I have never, I faked more shots at legal events, lawyer events than I did in college. And that's a fact. I'm throwing shit into planners with like old white men who were like, let's take tequila shots. And one guy at our softball, it was like, it was supposed to be like a friendly, like fundraiser softball thing on a Sunday, broke his entire leg. When I tell you, broke his fucking femur. You know how hard it is to break your femur?

• 23:06Drew Afualo?

Yeah, that's the biggest bone in your body.

• 23:08Speaker 03

  Yeah, really fucking hard.

• 23:09Drew Afualo?

Unless you're with me. I got a bigger bum.

• 23:13Speaker 03

  Really fucking hard.

• 23:15Drew Afualo?

  That's why you're a lawyer and I do this.

• 23:17Speaker 03

And you do this and it works out fucking perfectly. There you go. Okay. If I need someone curb stomped, I'm bringing my shoe in your leg. Listen, we'll get the job done.

• 23:27Drew Afualo?

  That's crazy. A broken leg.

• 23:28Speaker 03

Yeah, broken leg. And he was literally like,

• 23:29Drew Afualo?

  And it's softball?

• 23:30Speaker 03

And it was a softball game and he lost, which I'm like, come on. You know what I mean? If you're gonna go down swinging, at least.

• 23:35Drew Afualo?

Zeros across the board then. Good things. And then your man tore his ACL?

• 23:40Speaker 03

MCL, whichever, whichever. I didn't really listen to it enough to give a fuck. And he knows this.

• 23:45Drew Afualo?

Yeah, there's like, yeah. I've I've torn my ACL, MCL, and my PCL. And my meniscus, I tore all of them in half when I was in high school because I was an athlete in high school. And then I-

• 23:55Speaker 03

Unlike many of the men in your comments.

• 23:56Drew Afualo?

Right, exactly. Uh, yeah, so I tore everything and then I had to get surgery for it and now I have a scar on my knee, or I have a few. But the one I do have in the shape of a penis. Can you believe that?

• 24:07Speaker 03

  Wow.

• 24:08Drew Afualo?

In the shape of a penis and the texture of a penis.

• 24:11Speaker 03

  Again, generational curse shit.

• 24:12Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 24:13Speaker 03

  I'm telling you, the-

• 24:14Drew Afualo?

Don't know what I did to deserve that.

• 24:15Speaker 03

Listen, the Mormons moved on to native land and were like, penis shaped scar. Someone in your fucking family.

• 24:21Drew Afualo?

  Someone, yeah.

• 24:22Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 24:23Drew Afualo?

  Have have fun with that.

• 24:24Speaker 03

  Have fun with that, bitch.

• 24:27Drew Afualo?

So how does, how does your man feel about your presence on TikTok?

• 24:30Speaker 03

I get that question all the time. I know, right? Big-

• 24:33Drew Afualo?

  It's crazy.

• 24:33Speaker 03

That man, and that's the thing too, is I'm like, y'all are over here, I mean, the amount of DMs that I have from men all the time, right? Who would do anything to suck my toe.

• 24:44Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 24:44Speaker 03

Are still in the same vein, being like, well, how could a man ever be okay with like your presence on Atlanta? I'm like,

• 24:50Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 24:50Speaker 03

No, there are men out there who are stable and normal and who literally are my biggest fucking, he is my biggest fucking fan and that's saying a lot. Some of my fans are fucking insane.

• 24:59Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 24:59Speaker 03

He will tell me things I said in a video or on a podcast that I'm like, I don't even remember that shit and he's over here quoting it to people. He's sending people links. He's so, yeah. He couldn't be more jazzed about the-

• 25:11Drew Afualo?

I saw your video about the, what was it?

• 25:14Speaker 03

He made me a connection scam, yeah, because he has, yeah.

• 25:16Drew Afualo?

  I saw that, so sweet.

• 25:18Speaker 03

He has to go into a, uh, like a SCIF, like, uh, you know, like a high security, like basically like a black box. You can't even bring AirPods into those. Like, it's very, um, tight. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So you can't have your phone in there, anything, and so he can't text me during the day at work. So he would email me like connections games that he made. And everyone immediately was like, so you're dating a cop? I'm like, have you met me? I'm like, in what fucking universe? I'm like, a cop? Baby, no. Like, absolutely not.

• 25:43Drew Afualo?

Cops aren't smart enough to do that.

• 25:45Speaker 03

Not smart enough to do that. And also, also, also, Todd, the idea that a cop wouldn't be allowed to be on the phone, baby, what, if they couldn't be on their phone, who's gonna be texting nurses and playing fucking, playing fucking Wordle or whatever the fuck all day? Like, no. Those men are on their fucking phone grabbing their vest, not doing anything.

• 25:59Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 26:00Speaker 03

  Pulling up to a.

• 26:00Drew Afualo?

  TikToks.

• 26:01Speaker 03

Yeah. Taking four hours to pull up to a burglar to say, I don't know what to tell you. Like fucking be serious. He's not a fucking cop.

• 26:07Drew Afualo?

Cops aren't smart enough to make those.

• 26:08Speaker 03

No, no, no, no. Come on now.

• 26:11Drew Afualo?

  Relax, calm down.

• 26:12Speaker 03

Free fucking lax. Yeah, they're too busy getting all Cs in high school.

• 26:15Drew Afualo?

No, that's truly, that's. The reason why I asked too is because that's such a thoughtful, sweet thing. And like anytime women like us talk about having male partners who, who do thoughtful things. It's always like a, a game of assumptions after that. It's like, well, it's probably because, well, it's probably just to like undermine it because it makes them feel some type of way. So I was curious. I figured you get shit like that too.

• 26:39Speaker 03

Oh yeah. That's why I never, I mean, that's the first time that I'd ever even.

• 26:43Drew Afualo?

  Commented about your relationship.

• 26:44Speaker 03

Yeah, relationships. Cause I've dated, I mean, I have stories.

• 26:47Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 26:48Speaker 03

I have stories. I've dated men through this whole TikTok, you know, for the last like five years, whatever. Who I could, and I know every day they wake up in a cold fucking sweat, thinking this is the day she's gonna drop a part, fifty part series on some shit.

• 27:03Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 27:03Speaker 03

I've dated, I dated like a semi-famous, currently unemployed, because we love that actor. Um, who was not talented at all, but God, he was rich. Listen, I was a victim.

• 27:14Drew Afualo?

One look at talent, but man, did he have money.

• 27:16Speaker 03

Man, did he have money. Uh, man, man was his dad rich.

• 27:19Drew Afualo?

  For something at least.

• 27:19Speaker 03

Yeah, man did his dad die. Man did his dad die.

• 27:22Drew Afualo?

Really, you really nailed that one, Ken.

• 27:24Speaker 03

You hit that shit so hard. Nice work. Um, and he, yeah, and I, he did crazy shit to me, whatever. And I, you go through my TikTok story that time. Never would have known. And I wanna keep, I like to keep it that way because people, again, they are get so loud about everything they didn't know nothing about. But it is nice when you share little things like that. Like, oh no, they just unconditionally are obsessed with me or you, right? No, they just know how, how to do this. And no, they're not trying to get anything out of me. They simply want me to be happy.

• 27:55Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 27:55Speaker 03

  Imagine that, imagine that. Yeah.

• 27:57Drew Afualo?

  Crazy how that works.

• 27:59Speaker 03

  Crazy how that works.

• 28:00Drew Afualo?

Especially because you don't, um, your content isn't centered on relationships or even really your personal life at all. So like, I feel like that's another thing when they're like, what? Cause I love when they, in the beginning, I would love when they would write things like, oh, well, that's right, you're his angle. Because then I'm like, I'm gonna clock five million views off this. Thank you, team.

• 28:18Speaker 03

  Thank you.

• 28:19Drew Afualo?

  Appreciate it.

• 28:19Speaker 03

That's the thing too, is what pisses me off is the fact that my blacklist looks like the January 6th attendance sheet. Pisses me off because after a while, right? After a while, they stopped coming in. Like, I don't get hate comments really anymore. And I miss them. I miss them a lot. Cause I'm like, man, I want you to pull up because it was kind of fun.

• 28:37Drew Afualo?

We made such a great team.

• 28:38Speaker 03

Right. And yeah, I'm like, we made such a great team. And I also, I tell people to this day, I'm like, to this day, I have not read a comment that has actually got, like, that has really gotten to me. All of it is, I've heard worse things from better men, always. And I'm a lawyer. You don't think I've heard this shit from my own fucking client? Like, you don't think that I've heard the crazy shit?

• 28:55Drew Afualo?

  Exactly.

• 28:55Speaker 03

And I, so I always am hoping to be proven wrong one day. Like, to open up a comment and go, you know what? They got me, guys. They got me, girl.

• 29:01Drew Afualo?

Yeah, I, well, I've only said the one that I've gotten, and it was a random Barb Stan account on Twitter, so I know it wasn't a straight man. I'll tell you that right fucking now. I know that for a fact, that I wasn't a straight man, but...

• 29:13Speaker 03

No, yeah. If you ever get roasted, you'd be like, only straight men are allowed to roast me. And it won't be funny. If it were the gays, I'd be like, okay, here are tissues, babe. You're gonna get shit on. You're gonna be fucked.

• 29:23Drew Afualo?

Well, and my thing too is like, even that, when I told that story, I've told that story on interviews and stuff, and like, those clips have gone viral on TikTok. So now, when some new dude finds me, and he, they start referencing the insult I told everyone about, I'm like, you're taking shit from me too?

• 29:40Speaker 03

And, and also taking shit from probably a gay person.

• 29:43Drew Afualo?

Bro, you can't even, I said, you just can't do anything without me.

• 29:45Speaker 03

  You just can't do anything.

• 29:47Drew Afualo?

You can't even think of, I'm not even kidding, two days ago, I got tagged in a, like, an edit of me with Caleb Heron on my show. The first time he was on my show. And it was like an edit of us being funny, but I was telling him about being called the pot of greed thing. And then they were just like photoshopping it over my face whenever I said pot of greed. Oh my god, the comments acting like that was the funniest thing they've ever seen in their lives. I'm like, you.

• 30:12Speaker 03

And it's always crazy how it's such an echo chamber because most of those people who think that shit is funny after it's like, no, I was making fun of my.

• 30:20Drew Afualo?

Yeah, you're not in on the joke with me.

• 30:22Speaker 03

And the person who told the joke is probably like, give me a, yeah, give me a cut of that revenue, the fuck, like, are you joking?

• 30:27Drew Afualo?

  For real.

• 30:28Speaker 03

But it's like, they're all, all of you are samples. Like, all of you are just copies of one another, screaming at one another.

• 30:35Drew Afualo?

  So boring.

• 30:35Speaker 03

And I've heard, and also like in the comment section, not a single drag that's funny after that, on top of that. It was, it's just, nope, the one drag that you stole from me that I told you about. None of you can come up with anything better.

• 30:46Drew Afualo?

Yeah, you're just circle jerking in here.

• 30:47Speaker 03

Yeah, just circle jerking in here. And I'm like, I've, I've heard literally better roasts from a 12-year-old girl in 4th grade, like, running a fucking clay volcano project. Do you know what I mean?

• 30:57Drew Afualo?

  I know.

• 30:57Speaker 03

Like, they could probably drag me harder than you're.

• 31:00Drew Afualo?

Yeah, young women are mean as fuck, dude. Like, it's, it's also too, like, I've been dragged worse by my friends, like, people who love me.

• 31:06Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 31:07Drew Afualo?

People who actually love me have been meaner to me than that.

• 31:10Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 31:10Drew Afualo?

  Um, which is crazy.

• 31:11Speaker 03

My husband Ethan, I said something rude, I think, like, to him, we were out or something, and he looked at me, looked down slowly and said, bold thing to say in an open-toe shoe.

• 31:21Drew Afualo?

You're like, oh, fuck. Okay, well, first of all, fuck you.

• 31:24Speaker 03

Okay, fuck, I'm like the Sharpie on my big toe, like, that I'm trying to fill in, right, because I didn't get a pedicure, that wasn't enough for you, he was like, mm.

• 31:31Drew Afualo?

He's like, yeah, I can tell.

• 31:32Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 31:33Drew Afualo?

You know what's funny is I, I'm branching into acting and stuff now, and.

• 31:38Speaker 03

  As you should.

• 31:39Drew Afualo?

I was talking to my hair and makeup artist, who's also my cousin, Adam, and I was like, it was, we were glamming, and I was telling him about something I was working on, and I was like, you know what I was thinking of, though? I was like, what if I have to do, like, kissing scenes? Something about that is giving me hives. I don't know what it is, but like, acting and pretending to be in love with someone, ugh, like.

• 31:58Speaker 03

I'll do it for money, too, but like, fuck, you know what I mean?

• 32:02Drew Afualo?

And I, and I will do it. I'm just having a hard time imagining myself doing it because men make me sick to my stomach. So that's why I'm like, oh, hold on, man, touch me, ah, ah, ah. So I'm like waking up in a cold sweat, and I'm telling him, I'm like, what am I even gonna do? Like, I'm having this irrelevant conversation that has, it's not based in reality at all, it's truly an irrelevant fear. And then he interrupted me after I was rambling for like 20 minutes, and then he goes, okay, first of all, it's like 4 a.m., so calm down. And second of all, you're not getting any roles right now, so I don't know what you're working on. And I said, oh. Right, right, right, right, right. Okay, I'll, I'll shut the fuck up.

• 32:36Speaker 03

Yeah, I'll shut the fuck up. That's a valid.

• 32:38Drew Afualo?

And he loves me. That's my friend, that's my brother.

• 32:43Speaker 03

I'm honestly, I'm praying for you in the event that happens, that it's a role where you can kiss a girl. Like, how easy would that be?

• 32:50Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 32:50Speaker 03

  Fucking easy?

• 32:51Drew Afualo?

That's why I was like, or make me a villain.

• 32:52Speaker 03

  Or make you a villain.

• 32:53Drew Afualo?

Make me, make me a villain, make me a, make me fucking Thanos in the next Marvel series or something.

• 32:57Speaker 03

Enough bitchless bums online, you could probably emulate one too.

• 33:00Drew Afualo?

Make me someone, make me someone evil. Make me like a Loki, like, like an evil, like, that you end up loving eventually.

• 33:06Speaker 03

  Exactly.

• 33:07Drew Afualo?

I think that's in the stars for me.

• 33:08Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 33:09Drew Afualo?

What about, what's in the stars for you? Oh, you're coming out with a book?

• 33:12Speaker 03

Yes, I'm coming out with a book.

• 33:13Drew Afualo?

Can you please tell us about it?

• 33:14Speaker 03

Yeah, it's gonna be called, uh, The Book They Throw At You, um, which is essentially me, a sarcastic lawyer's guide to the unholy chaos of the legal field, which is basically, um, you know, I wanna, I almost, I wanna say it's like Chicken Soup for the Soul, but, but like not like that. It's not gonna, it's not gonna really make you feel, oh, it's gonna make you laugh, that's for fucking sure, but it's also gonna just, and a combination of just teaching you just the baseline of what I think every K through 12 kids should know about their Miranda rights and, and, um, and interacting with police and all of that, and also just, just the craziness that is the legal field and the funny stories that I, exactly what I tell on like my podcast or on my TikTok and Crazy Cases,

• 33:57Speaker 03

but it's kind of all lumped together in sections that make sense, you know? Like the same as Chicken Soup for the Soul, how it's like, there's a section on death, and it's like, oh, these great inspirational stories, it's the same thing, it's, there's a section on death, except it's about, you know, a farmer who had a, had a tractor run over him, and then he wrote in blood his will on the side that said, "All to my wife, love, Cecil." If he wanted to, he would. And how that was a valid will, they like ripped the fender off and like went and put it into court, and they were like, yeah, valid will. Another, like, some, some anecdotes about being a woman in the, in this field, and how it is navigating that, and the types of harassment, yeah, that I, that we've had to deal with. But yeah, so overall, it's funny, and, uh, the court transcripts are in there, which is great, the funny ones.

• 34:41Drew Afualo?

Yeah. They love that series for me.

• 34:43Speaker 03

I know, they love that one.

• 34:44Drew Afualo?

And it's probably like what you were saying earlier, which is it's shocking to hear how people really are. Like, it's almost people's Ross versions of themselves.

• 34:52Speaker 03

Yeah. And people think, I mean, I understand why, because I didn't really know any of this either before I got into the field. But I'm like, no, like, regular people are in the law more than like the stuck up lawyers. Who do you think we represent? Who do you think's filing all these lawsuits? Who do you think is, you know, being accused of these crimes, whatever? Like, of course, people are gonna say the most, the craziest shit, craziest shit in court. And of course, the craziest shit's gonna fucking happen. Like, I mean, people, what's like a crazy case that you've experienced or been on? I'm like, I mean, do you have four hours? Like, every day I encounter someone. I mean, there was a case where a woman, a girl, I mean, she was in her twenties, but she, God, I lowkey kinda loved her. She grave robbed her own mother to prove a point.

• 35:38Drew Afualo?

  Nice.

• 35:38Speaker 03

Which I can respect in certain ways, right? And I was at the point where I was like.

• 35:43Drew Afualo?

She said, this vengeance goes past.

• 35:44Speaker 03

Exactly. She was like, no, the ring that I was supposed to get in the will is the one that looked like mom's. And mom's was buried with hers and we never got a photo of it. And no one fucking believes me. Everyone's gaslighting me about what this fucking ring looks like. So when she pulled up with it in court, we were like,

• 36:00Speaker 03

  where'd you?

• 36:00Drew Afualo?

  Get that exact replica.

• 36:02Speaker 03

Where did you get that, actually? She was like, I just got it.

• 36:06Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 36:06Speaker 03

What do you want? And then we found out, you know, yeah, no, she, she grave robbed the fuck out of her mom. Would she know what? If her mom raised her to be petty, I would, if that were me, if I was the mom, I'd be like, you know what? Yeah, you, you weren't entitled to that fucking ring.

• 36:18Drew Afualo?

You know what? You earned it.

• 36:19Speaker 03

Yeah, you fucking earned it. You fucking earned it.

• 36:22Drew Afualo?

You take that shit, Gollum. You know what I mean? That is yours. You keep, you keep that queen.

• 36:26Speaker 03

  Yeah, you keep it.

• 36:28Drew Afualo?

How was the book writing process for you? Like, how did you?

• 36:31Speaker 03

Oh, God, I mean, how was yours?

• 36:33Drew Afualo?

It was. Interesting, it was very different and then it was tedious most times.

• 36:38Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 36:39Drew Afualo?

It's just a lot of back and forth.

• 36:40Speaker 03

Yeah, and yeah, I, I mean, it's good. It's a lot of, it, a lot of research. Cause a lot of the things, I mean, listen, I don't talk about things, I, it's kind of as a rule that I don't really think I created in my head to stand on some moral high ground because maybe I'll go low. Right? I'll go lower than you, that's for sure.

• 36:58Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 36:58Speaker 03

But as a lawyer, just like ingrained and taught, like, yeah, you don't make an argument, you can't back up with something. You don't ha- you don't state a conclusion, you don't, you don't state an opinion unless you have something to back it up or else you don't have an opinion at all.

• 37:10Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 37:10Speaker 03

And so, you know, when I talk about something online, I know what I'm talking, I know what I'm fucking talking about.

• 37:15Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 37:15Speaker 03

Uh, and in the book, I, you know, I have the same, I hold myself to the same principle. And so when I'm talking about going really in-depth into all of these cases, craziest fucking cases, uh, I wanna be right and I wanna be on it. Uh, and so that's, it's just hours upon hours of me having to research and stuff. It's like 3am nights, honestly.

• 37:35Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 37:35Speaker 03

All these people are like, how'd you have time to write a book? How do you handle it all? I'm like, I don't, I'm ill, I'm physically ill. I pounded two monsters on the weekend.

• 37:41Drew Afualo?

I'll let you know when I come on the out, on the other side.

• 37:43Speaker 03

  I'll let you know.

• 37:44Drew Afualo?

I'll let you know I'm done.

• 37:45Speaker 03

And when I start aging. One day, like milk, and right now, not so much, but look at the color of my skin, one day. It's gonna hit, I'll, I'll go south.

• 37:53Drew Afualo?

  What about, uh, your podcast?

• 37:56Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah.

• 37:56Drew Afualo?

I know it's in the same vein.

• 37:57Speaker 03

That too, yeah. Uh, rebuttal podcast, cause my name's Reb Mees, a little cute. Uh, and it's the same, it's honestly like the same kind of, not the same kind of thing as the book, but the book very much is if you like my podcast, you'll love the book, uh, where each episode I talk about a case or a legal concept or a situation that I think deserves people's attention cause it's just fucking crazy or hilarious or whatever. And I listened to True Crime Podcasts before, it's like I've heard about Jeffrey Dahmer a hundred times. I've heard about the same cases a hundred times and yeah, they're super interesting. But like the murder cases are the least interesting in the law. Everyone knows that. The family law cases are where shit gets fucking crazy.

• 38:35Drew Afualo?

I, I follow a family law lawyer in Australia, Fadon, love her. Um, I'm obsessed with her. She doesn't know who I am. I just, she's just my new thing.

• 38:43Speaker 03

  Me with K.

• 38:45Drew Afualo?

Love her, love her, love her. Um, but she, she does family law. So she tells cases sometimes they are nuts.

• 38:51Speaker 03

  They're fucking insane.

• 38:53Drew Afualo?

  Obviously, but like, they're crazy.

• 38:54Speaker 03

Crazy because two, the two most dangerous areas of law are property law and family law. Like, family lawyers get jumped. They get, like, attempted murder, like, tried to kill. And also the things that go on in them are crazy. Like, you find out, like, you find out that, like, a husband and wife are related.

• 39:10Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 39:11Speaker 03

During a paternity test. Like, when shit like that starts happening.

• 39:13Drew Afualo?

  It's crazy.

• 39:14Speaker 03

  Then people start.

• 39:15Drew Afualo?

  It's like a real skeleton.

• 39:16Speaker 03

Yeah, it's real. Like, you think you have skeletons in your closet because you murdered somebody? I wish it were that simple. Like, oh my god. Family lawyer clients are like, oh, you killed who? Thank god, is it just that? Oh my god. God bless. You know what I mean? Thank god you're not inbred for the last three generations and now we gotta figure out the custody of your cat.

• 39:34Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 39:34Speaker 03

That your husband fucked last weekend. Swear to god. Crazy as shit. It's always the, hmm, not always, but usually the men.

• 39:41Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 39:42Speaker 03

Usually the men who are doing the crazy shit. Usually the men who are the deadbeat father. You know? I made a joke during my podcast because I don't always pick out, like, family law cases. Sometimes there are cases of just, you know, witness protection cases, just like crazy shit that happens. And through the telling of the story, it's like, I, I just joke, I'm like, at this point, this is the deadbeat dad chronicles. Because every fucking man involved in these cases was a deadbeat dad. Like, they just say, you know, instead of just divorcing their wife or breaking up with their girlfriend.

• 40:09Drew Afualo?

  Right, right.

• 40:09Speaker 03

  Or getting a job.

• 40:10Drew Afualo?

  Because that would be too.

• 40:11Speaker 03

Right. They, like, fake their own death and, like, go into witness protection. Or, like, become a snitch for the mob so that they can go into witness protection and bring their girlfriend to witness protection with them.

• 40:19Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 40:20Speaker 03

  They.

• 40:20Drew Afualo?

  It's easier.

• 40:21Speaker 03

  Yeah, literally.

• 40:22Drew Afualo?

So much easier to do that.

• 40:23Speaker 03

Yeah, and I'm like, perfect. No, yeah, a hundred percent. They assassinate their political opponent in Tennessee because, you know, their wife was on to them and knew about their girlfriend. No, like, the craziest. Yeah, the craziest things.

• 40:35Drew Afualo?

I, I'm curious, do you ever watch lawyer shows or movies and you're like?

• 40:39Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah.

• 40:40Drew Afualo?

  That's crazy.

• 40:40Speaker 03

Yeah, all of it. How, how similar is it to Suits? Not even a little, but like, that's, I, I do, I watch it for Meghan Markle, bitch. Like, have you seen her?

• 40:48Drew Afualo?

  It's entertaining.

• 40:48Speaker 03

  It's entertaining as well, yeah.

• 40:50Drew Afualo?

I used to love watching, I think it was like GQ, they Would had a YouTube series where they would have like an expert watch movies or TV shows of people acting in their profession. I loved watching them.

• 41:03Speaker 03

  Loved.

• 41:03Drew Afualo?

Watched like a chef, I watched like a Navy SEAL, I watched.

• 41:06Speaker 03

There was one where it was like a really famous like military doctor or surgeon, like something like that and he was watching military, like movies or shows where they were doing, you know, on scene surgeries, someone got like a bullet hole through their arm where they're like fixing it and he'd be like not even close. Like, I mean, he'd be like, okay, so they would be dead on the floor.

• 41:23Drew Afualo?

Like, do you watch Law Order SVU and you're like, okay.

• 41:26Speaker 03

Yeah, I mean, the Copaganda, love that. But like, I love that, like, I love that show. I grew up loving that show and you re-watch it and you go, okay, maybe Stabler shouldn't have been throwing people through glass walls.

• 41:35Drew Afualo?

Yeah, yeah, him beating the shit out of people, but then you think, but now with the information you have now.

• 41:40Speaker 03

  Right.

• 41:41Drew Afualo?

Maybe he was the most accurate cop.

• 41:42Speaker 03

  Right, I mean, sometimes, listen.

• 41:45Drew Afualo?

Maybe he was doing like, what do they call it, method acting?

• 41:48Speaker 03

Right. Honestly, but then also it's like, I'm like, yeah, Law Order SVU, Copaganda for, you know, like NYPD, like the cops that you are talking to, do you never talk to cops, don't talk to cops?

• 41:59Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 41:59Speaker 03

In your mouth, don't talk to cops. They're not gonna be Stabler, they're not gonna be Benson, they're not gonna, they're not gonna care, they're not gonna give a fuck.

• 42:04Drew Afualo?

  No.

• 42:04Speaker 03

But one thing that I don't think anyone really took from it is in during the show, right, they'd always have the first suspect or some shit, right? And we always knew it wasn't them because it's just too easy.

• 42:15Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 42:15Speaker 03

Um, and they'd be questioning them, whatever, and they'd lawyer up and they'd be like, ah, damn it. Well, can't get them now. I'm like, how did you not connect that that means lawyer the fuck up? Well, they must be guilty. No, babes, were they ever in jail by the end of it? Were they ever in prison? No, it was the bitches who were jawing off.

• 42:34Drew Afualo?

  You getting pissed off?

• 42:35Speaker 03

Literally, I'm like, for some, like, coming from a bitch with a big mouth, shut the fuck up when you're talking to police, oh my god.

• 42:41Drew Afualo?

I know, they were like, alright, I guess I'll tell you.

• 42:43Speaker 03

I know, literally, like, oh, fuck.

• 42:45Drew Afualo?

  Confess my whole crime.

• 42:46Speaker 03

Yeah, I twist my arm, yeah.

• 42:47Drew Afualo?

In the interrogation room, I'm like, how often does that happen?

• 42:49Speaker 03

  My god.

• 42:50Drew Afualo?

  Probably not often.

• 42:50Speaker 03

Oh, people confessed to their shit all the time because they think it's not relevant. I mean, I've had people be like, um, like, you know, they like fail like a drug screening or something, like for probation and they're like, they're like, yeah, you didn't pass, like, your drunk test. It was an edible, said it couldn't smoke. Okay, it's the same, right? You still have marijuana in your system. Well, okay. So now it's on the record that you fucking took an edible.

• 43:12Drew Afualo?

Yeah, that's why lawyers say, "Don't tell me."

• 43:14Speaker 03

  Yeah, don't.

• 43:15Drew Afualo?

If you killed someone, don't tell me.

• 43:16Speaker 03

Well, no, if you kill someone, tell me and no one else. Tell me and no one else.

• 43:20Drew Afualo?

You're telling everyone but me. That's the...

• 43:22Speaker 03

And you know what's actually interesting? People don't, I guess, people don't realize with evidence rules, the way they work is if a client... Because obviously, attorney-client privilege, confidentiality, we are bound, bound by, you know, just shutting our fucking mouths, not being able to tell anyone anything, and it's a much stronger privilege than like the therapist privilege or a doctor patient, because there are certain mandatory disclosures, reporting, mandatory reporting laws. Um, we don't have that. We are, we're mandatory not reporting. You don't fucking say shit. And so the way the evidence rules work out for when you have to tell and when you don't, kind of thing. If a client drove me out, said, "Hey, like, let's take a drive."

• 44:05Speaker 03

Drove me out to some random location, showed me a body in the ground, and we're like, "Look, it's the missing, the missing guy on television. I killed him." If I don't touch it, if I, if they don't give it to me, like, I don't hand it, I don't handle it, I am bound to not say a word.

• 44:22Drew Afualo?

  That's crazy.

• 44:23Speaker 03

Not even like call a tip anything, like, I can't say anything. And I've always thought about, that's always like the most extreme situation. That's why people are like, "Oh, lawyers are going to hell." And I'm like, "No, yeah, probably." But, you know, I mean, we're trying to keep some people out of prison before then, which is, is, you know, a good thing. Uh, we're, we're the last line of defense for your constitutional rights. You know, the people who are gonna be fighting, especially the next four years, are gonna be the ones who are for sure, maybe probably going to hell, but they did some great stuff before then.

• 44:48Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 44:48Speaker 03

Uh, but I always think about, just completely as a joke, how I would react.

• 44:54Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 44:55Speaker 03

Like, if a client was like, "Let's get a coffee," and I was like, "Oh, my God, sure." And I just have my fucking Gucci bag, like, with my stiletto heel in front of an open pit of someone. And I'm just like, I'm trying to play it cool, right? Because I'm like, I don't want to be a statistic. Like, no, yeah, for sure. A hundred percent, maybe some Febreze in the bag. Like, what would you, like, how would I, like, I don't know how I would act.

• 45:15Drew Afualo?

Thank you for sharing it with me.

• 45:17Speaker 03

I don't know how it'd act, but there are lawyers out there.

• 45:18Drew Afualo?

  I'm holding space for this.

• 45:19Speaker 03

  Yes, I'm holding space.

• 45:20Drew Afualo?

I'm holding space for this. Don't worry.

• 45:22Speaker 03

Yeah, they're not defying gravity any, anymore.

• 45:25Drew Afualo?

They're defying gravity somewhere, girl. It's not on this earthly plane.

• 45:30Speaker 03

Right, it's messy. Why didn't we use a gun, babe? There's like stab wounds, that's blood everywhere.

• 45:34Drew Afualo?

  That's crazy.

• 45:35Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 45:35Drew Afualo?

What would you say is your most common piece of advice that you give people?

• 45:40Speaker 03

Other than do not talk to cops?

• 45:43Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 45:43Speaker 03

And that, people are like, well, what if they pull you over? You know what I mean when I say don't talk to cops. I mean that if a cop shows up to your house and knocks on your door, you do not consent to a search. You do not let them in, you do not answer questions.

• 45:54Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 45:54Speaker 03

You say, you have to firmly say you're invoking a right to remain silent. You have to affirmatively say, I want a lawyer. And after that, then they can't talk to you. And if they talk to you, then a lawyer later can get it thrown out.

• 46:03Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 46:04Speaker 03

Another thing is, um, don't go into business with your family. And it is sometimes, you know what I mean? Like, I'm seeing your mom and sister in the back of the room like that. You know, sometimes it works out, it's totally fine.

• 46:13Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 46:13Speaker 03

But like, always, always, always, family, friends, whatever. If you get into business with people, like, people show their faces. And it's not that everyone's an asshole. I know they're probably your best, best, best friend. If they are your bestest friend, like, don't. Maybe don't like, start a cryptocurrency, like, together, you know? Maybe like, do it with someone who you're not.

• 46:33Drew Afualo?

  That's tea.

• 46:34Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah.

• 46:34Drew Afualo?

It's like shit nobody, nobody really thinks about.

• 46:36Speaker 03

Honest to God, don't do it, do not do it. And it's like, the best case scenario is it works out. The worst case scenario is worse. Like, so much worse than you could ever imagine.

• 46:44Drew Afualo?

No matter what the upside is.

• 46:46Speaker 03

Yes, like, the amount of families that have been torn apart. I mean, if anyone, like, Google, I did an episode on the U-Haul family dynasty. The U-Haul business is so wrought with tea and bullshit and murder. Because of just money. Like, they, you know, I mean, the people wanting more than money. Unprecedented, yeah, so don't go into business with your family. Um, and, I mean, first, shut your mouth. Second, don't go into business with your family. Third, get a prenup. And fourth, shut your mouth. And the get a prenup, if you're broke, if you're a broke man on the internet, talking about gold diggers. We're not, we're not, I'm not talking about you, baby. Not talking about you.

• 47:20Drew Afualo?

  You don't need that.

• 47:21Speaker 03

Mm-hmm, yeah, yeah, that's what I would say.

• 47:23Drew Afualo?

You still get a tax return, you don't need that.

• 47:26Speaker 03

  Exactly.

• 47:26Drew Afualo?

That's tea. Like, do you, do you offer legal advice a lot to your, like, to people in your, in your life?

• 47:33Speaker 03

Oh, no, I mean, I think I'm not allowed to.

• 47:35Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 47:36Speaker 03

But, yeah, because unless you have an attorney-client relationship.

• 47:39Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 47:40Speaker 03

Which can be created off of literally anything, like a drunk girl at a bar being like, should I do this? And I'd be like, totally go for it. She could sue me later for malpractice. So, like, that's why.

• 47:48Drew Afualo?

  You gotta be real careful.

• 47:49Speaker 03

But, yes, of course, I am, I mean, fuck, my phone ringing all the time, like, from some rain, some distant cousin. I'm like, hello? They're like, hey. So, like, theoretically, like, if you ran, not saying you, but like, theoretically, if you ran through a car wash naked because of circumstances, um, and kicked off someone's, like, side mirror, would that be one charge or two? And I'm like.

• 49:20Speaker 03

Can you back up? Is this like personally, right? Like where are you? Like where are you? Are you calling from a county jail? No, okay, perfect. Like that kind of shit? Where I'm like, let me, let me look something up really quick and get back to you. Like really? That pride, like that person, not every practice area is in my head immediately. I'm like, well, fuck, where are you? Michigan? Let me look it up really quick. Like nudity. And I'm like on the same Google they are. I'm like, yeah, you look fine.

• 49:43Drew Afualo?

You're, it looks good to me.

• 49:44Speaker 03

Yeah, you'll get off. Well, someone will, but.

Have you been disillusioned by anything? And like in law, like how you were saying, like, like, for example, I've seen that study where they say like statistically in divorce settlements, women typically end up with kids in custody battles. But part of that is misogyny. I think they're just assuming women will want them. But most of that is that men don't typically fight for kids the way that women do. So have you seen anything where you're kind of like, yeah, that's like, it seems to be every single time?

• 50:14Speaker 03

Absolutely. We saw women in self-defense, women and stand your ground laws, or black people, when people of color.

• 50:21Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 50:21Speaker 03

On stand your ground laws. Stand your ground laws, the whole idea of like, don't tread on me. You know, where we can guard our castle and protect our castle. And that's why, you know, second amendment, right to their arms. You know, people who are white and men who shoot an intruder and kill them and then, you know, are never charged. Cause oh, well, it was, you know, it's the, it's called like the castle doctor. And you can protect your castle. You know, you can stand your ground laws.

• 50:46Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 50:47Speaker 03

You know, shooting just unarmed kids in the street because they had a hoodie on.

• 50:51Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 50:51Speaker 03

Well, stand your ground. You know, we have standing ground, they were threatened, you know, X, Y, Z. But then when women do it, because they're literally being attacked.

• 50:59Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 51:00Speaker 03

In the street or otherwise in their homes. So best thing violence victims especially.

• 51:04Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 51:04Speaker 03

Trying to protect their children or protect themselves. It's, they're always charged. And that's not, I mean statistically, yes, it's not literally a hundred percent of the time they're always charged. But just from what you see and what you study and what you learn is.

• 51:16Drew Afualo?

  There are patterns.

• 51:17Speaker 03

Oh, it's stand your ground for white men.

• 51:19Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 51:19Speaker 03

  Who, who, who are, right?

• 51:21Drew Afualo?

Yeah, there's an asterisk next to that.

• 51:23Speaker 03

Like the moment that, you know, people, black people, specifically people of color as well, the moment. It's a black man with a gun. Oh, no, we don't want, we don't want people of color to have guns. Oh, no, that's just, we just, we didn't mean everyone can have second amendment rights.

• 51:35Drew Afualo?

  Well, actually, that's dangerous.

• 51:38Speaker 03

Yeah, no, oh, now, now, well, that's threatening.

• 51:40Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 51:40Speaker 03

What if, well, and also, it's like, you know, when uh someone's pulled over by a cop and then, you know, a cop like, you know, shoots them eight, eighteen times because, you know, their, their skin was a little bit darker and everyone, and there's always people go, well, we don't know the full story. Well, they were reaching in their backseat. What if there were a gun, there was a gun back there? Maybe they're in Alabama. There's a gun in every backseat in fucking Alabama. Like, they were reaching back for their license or their gum or whatever. I'm like, but the moment it's a white person, everything's fine, everything's cool, everything's chill.

• 52:08Drew Afualo?

I don't care if you're reaching in your backseat then.

• 52:09Speaker 03

Right, right. You don't care. Well, he was getting his license. Like, oh, it's not a big deal. Um, and you will, you know, oh, he was, he was a, he had a license, you know, an open carry license. It's fine. I'm like, but that person had one too. The black guy had one too. The black girl had one too.

• 52:22Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 52:23Speaker 03

So that was one thing. I mean, there are hundreds of things that I could say, but that is one thing that, that came to mind. Because, because, you know, domestic violence victims, especially in this country, women who are stalked, women who are threatened, and there are a lot of people online, even influencers and creators who've experienced that.

• 52:40Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 52:41Speaker 03

They, they basically are like, well, unless they literally kill you, we can't really do anything.

• 52:46Drew Afualo?

Oh, yeah, I've been told that.

• 52:47Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 52:48Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 52:48Speaker 03

  Mm-hmm.

• 52:48Drew Afualo?

Yeah, I've had, I've had issues with men who have stalked me and my family for like years.

• 52:53Speaker 03

  Mm-hmm.

• 52:54Drew Afualo?

Uh, and then it's always like, well, unless they act on it, I can't do anything.

• 52:57Speaker 03

Right, and then they act on it, and then they go, well, it's not that bad.

• 53:01Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 53:01Speaker 03

Like, well, they didn't, well, you, well, you like ran fast enough, so they didn't catch you. Oh.

• 53:06Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 53:07Speaker 03

  And that works by design.

• 53:08Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 53:08Speaker 03

Because there's a way, like, everyone who says, well, what can you do, you know, free country, we can't just, you know, basically, prevent people from moving certain places or talking or saying certain things online or to someone, just, you know, first amendment, just because one person feels threatened. I'm like, well, no, that's not what's happening.

• 53:23Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 53:23Speaker 03

They, they really, because the law is very. Um, archaic when it comes to doing what it can to protect our most vulnerable in society.

• 53:33Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 53:34Speaker 03

And our most vulnerable are honestly the people who aren't as protected by the law.

• 53:39Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 53:39Speaker 03

  Which includes LGBTQ plus community.

• 53:41Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 53:41Speaker 03

  Trans community, women.

• 53:43Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 53:44Speaker 03

  Women of color, children too.

• 53:45Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 53:46Speaker 03

The amount of times that laws just completely leave massive holes open for kids to be abused by the system. Or to be left out.

• 53:55Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 53:55Speaker 03

Or to be um, just subject to the worst things, both in, you know, juvenile detention centers and out.

• 54:01Drew Afualo?

Even in more, even more vulnerable.

• 54:03Speaker 03

Yeah, exactly. And it's because, I mean, I'm like, look at, who set this system up? Look at the, who's in, who's been in power in the legal field.

• 54:10Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 54:11Speaker 03

For, for the last hundred million years, uh, white men, white men, white men. And even though right now today, there are more women in this field than there are men. All of the people who are in power are the white men. It doesn't matter. You know what I mean? I'm like, I'm like, yeah. Being a woman, I see women everywhere, but we're all subject to the same misogyny because the people who are, you know, determining our paychecks, who make decisions. Yeah. We're the ones having to convince those fuck, fucking assholes.

• 54:33Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, for real.

• 54:34Speaker 03

Of the personhood and the existence of people who don't look like them.

• 54:39Drew Afualo?

  Yep.

• 54:40Speaker 03

  And that's difficult sometimes.

• 54:41Drew Afualo?

That's when you're fighting prejudice. It's fighting ghosts, really.

• 54:44Speaker 03

  Literally.

• 54:44Drew Afualo?

Yeah, you're like, I want to change the system, the system, but I need to get inside of it. And how can I get in when it's impenetrable?

• 54:50Speaker 03

Exactly. You know what it kind of equates to sometimes? When it comes to, because we're like, in the legal field, it's like politicians. Lawyers die in that chair, bitch. They do not retire. They do not quit. I work for a man who was 90 years old, practicing in court. We do not take licenses away. Oh, no, baby. We let you, we let you pull up. Like, you pass the bar. Like during prohibition. Like, that shit's fucking wild to me.

• 55:16Drew Afualo?

If Father Time is assigned to me, hey, I'm pissed.

• 55:19Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah. No, you're.

• 55:20Drew Afualo?

Hey, I'll defend myself in court. Um, he might keel over any second.

• 55:23Speaker 03

No, a hundred percent. He's gonna be like, oh, she's free? They freed her? Shit.

• 55:28Drew Afualo?

He's like, well, I might not be alive by the end of this trial, so.

• 55:31Speaker 03

No, exactly. I kid you not, exactly. And you smell exactly like you think. And so, when you know, like, a lot of times. Right, you're, um, some of them, honestly, some of them are great. Like, I've met a lot of, um, men who are in this field, who are the white male old demographic, who are honestly, not like necessarily the good ones, because all of them should be the good ones, but they have absolutely been pivotal and like making sure that there's a door open, yeah. But, but you know, sometimes they're just so old that it's like, honestly, like, working with a Make-A-Wish kid. And I mean that in the most respectful way of, look, if you're at Disneyland and you see a Make-A-Wish kid and they are a terror, right?

• 56:11Speaker 03

They are screaming, yelling, crying in line, like, like, pissing, you know what I mean, punching people, whatever, and you see the big Make-A-Wish crown, right, on their head, you go, well, it's not really my business to say anything, because like, they don't have a lot of, they don't have a lot of time left, you know what I mean, like, you want them to just,

• 56:26Drew Afualo?

  To enjoy it.

• 56:26Speaker 03

You just gotta let it, you just gotta let it ride, right, and put your energy somewhere more important.

• 56:30Drew Afualo?

And then take them out to pasture later.

• 56:32Speaker 03

Exactly, and all of these, not all of them, but some of these men who are like, it's like, you know, during the Black Lives Matters protest, I remember, one of my bosses, who was otherwise a good lawyer, is like rambling on and on, right, about their, you know, the whole thugs terminology stuff. And I was like, I just, I just sat there listening, because I'm like, he's gonna be dead soon, you know what I mean, like, I'm like, I don't, teaching him anything is not helping anyone, like, it's not like he's a, like, he's not changing shit. He's gonna go home to his dead wife and just, and, and his shitty dog, and that's gonna be that, and eventually, one day, I'm gonna get the call and go, finally, right, like, he's done, it's over.

• 57:10Drew Afualo?

I'm glad your wife's no longer with you.

• 57:12Speaker 03

Yeah, Father Time can sometimes be on our side, because I'm like, speed this shit up, please, god damn it, like, sometimes people just have to die in order for things to change, and that's okay.

• 57:23Drew Afualo?

  And you know what?

• 57:24Speaker 03

  And you know what?

• 57:25Drew Afualo?

When it, when it picks the right person, I'm a fan, you know, sometimes I'm like, well, we're all better off, aren't we?

• 57:31Speaker 03

And I'm not advocating for murder, okay, on the record.

• 57:34Drew Afualo?

I'm saying the natural passing of time.

• 57:36Speaker 03

  Circle of life.

• 57:37Drew Afualo?

That's circle of life, you know?

• 57:38Speaker 03

Lion King, they ate with that, okay, but, but sometimes, let's try to change their minds, let's hope that they, they deteriorate first.

• 57:46Drew Afualo?

I've, I've actually said that. I said that on, I think on Rain Wilson's podcast, like he said, like, do you think there is hope for change or, uh, you know, what have you? And I said, yeah, I do. I just don't think it's going to come from people who have made up their minds. It's not going to come from them. Like you gotta let them die out. Like you gotta let those bloodlines stop bitch. I've already prayed to my ancestors about it, hopefully, and baldness. Hopefully that continues to ravage their bloodlines. I said, what I think will help enact change, other than everyone who's already on the same page, is getting a bunch of fence sitters, like people who don't care at all, or people who aren't plugged in, or people who are like, I don't know which one's which, like, it sounds like there's bad on both sides. Like people like that are the ones that you need, you can grab and have join you.

• 58:29Speaker 03

  Yep.

• 58:29Drew Afualo?

Everyone else, let them die off.

• 58:31Speaker 03

  Exactly.

• 58:31Drew Afualo?

That's the fastest way to do it.

• 58:33Speaker 03

  Have a chance.

• 58:34Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, exactly.

• 58:35Speaker 03

Either way, or they have enough of an open mind or empathy or whatever.

• 58:39Drew Afualo?

  Right, exactly.

• 58:40Speaker 03

  To grasp a concept.

• 58:42Drew Afualo?

  I agree, I agree.

• 58:43Speaker 03

Right? You look at all of these other horrible times in history and you have to know to a certain extent, yeah, those people had to die off. Like, I'm sorry, like, I'm really sorry, but they just had to.

• 58:54Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 58:55Speaker 03

There's no other way for us to have fixed that at all.

• 58:57Drew Afualo?

  Like, literally, you can't. When someone's 90?

• 59:00Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 59:00Drew Afualo?

And they've spent 80 of those years hating people very specifically?

• 59:04Speaker 03

  Owning people very specifically.

• 59:06Drew Afualo?

What am I gonna do in their last two months of their life? You know what I'm saying?

• 59:09Speaker 03

Not talk, not waste my time talking to them. Like, are you fucking kidding me?

• 59:12Drew Afualo?

I'm not wasting my time. That's why I think the same thing. And I said that too during 2020 and all of that. I was like, it got to a point where I was like, I'm not convincing anyone.

• 59:20Speaker 03

  No.

• 59:21Drew Afualo?

  That's not my job.

• 59:22Speaker 03

No, it's not my job. And on my billable hour, you couldn't afford me anyway. Be fucking serious.

• 59:26Drew Afualo?

I'm gonna tell you to choke, bitch. That's what I'm gonna tell you to do.

• 59:28Speaker 03

Well, you're just intolerant. I'm not intolerant. I'm tolerant of people who actually want to listen.

• 59:33Drew Afualo?

  I'm intolerant of you.

• 59:35Speaker 03

I'm intolerant of you. Oh, no, for sure. This is not a safe space for you. This is dangerous as fuck.

• 59:39Drew Afualo?

Well, they're like, well, you sound so hateful. Well, that's because I hate you.

• 59:41Speaker 03

  I hate you.

• 59:42Drew Afualo?

  That's because I hate you.

• 59:43Speaker 03

  That's a strong word.

• 59:44Drew Afualo?

  I hope that's clear.

• 59:45Speaker 03

Yeah, it's strong words, why I use it. Yeah, it's absolutely why.

• 59:48Drew Afualo?

  I know.

• 59:50Speaker 03

  I'm intimidated by you. Good.

• 59:51Drew Afualo?

Yeah, perfect, perfect. Great, it's working, thank God. Okay, so to Rap us because we've been yapping girl.

• 59:58Speaker 03

  Yeah, sorry.

• 59:59Drew Afualo?

Period. No, don't be sorry. I love it. Those the the best episodes I have are those. Uh, I would love to know if you have any advice for anyone marginalized really who maybe wants to go in into law and maybe is like nervous about encountering invisible barriers, which obviously you've spoken to a bunch in the field. But I think it's imperative. Actually, before you answer that question, I want to give you your flowers. I think you're incredible. And I think people like you are very important, not just because obviously you're extremely smart and talented and you're fucking funny, which I love. Smart and funny go hand in hand in my opinion, but also being a woman and being a white woman. And advocating the way that you do is very important and I want to give you your flowers. I think you're amazing.

• 1:00:41Drew Afualo?

I think people like you are so necessary, not just in in the literal world because Rev has a literal job, a real job. Unlike mine.

• 1:00:50Speaker 03

  You can't relate.

• 1:00:50Drew Afualo?

Yeah, you can't relate and neither can I because she works a lot harder than I do.

• 1:00:55Speaker 03

  No.

• 1:00:55Drew Afualo?

Uh, you have your real like you're actually making a difference in the world and I think that's so incredibly important and powerful. And I think you're amazing. So I want to say that first.

• 1:01:04Speaker 03

Well, thank you. I it's should be the baseline for everyone. Like I it makes me feel so awkward because I'm I just genuinely believe I'm like I if my job as a lawyer, like everyone's job as a lawyer is to go to court and argue for their clients. How is it not part of our job that we make it a better profession, that we make it a better field, that we make it safer for someone else, that we to put our neck out where maybe another person couldn't because I'm a white woman and I know that the color of my skin is going to make a difference in whether I can say something or not, whether I can threaten my job or not. And and so for people who want to come into this field, who are part of those communities that this field does not represent absolutely or are not represented by.

• 1:01:44Speaker 03

You know, only 5% of all attorneys in the US are black, which is crazy because 38.7% of our incarcerated population is black because of inherent racism, period and prejudiced, period.

• 1:01:54Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:54Speaker 03

Um, and and so, you know, I always tell people I would want if I were in a situation and anyone could be of being on the other side of of a courtroom that's Not the good side, right? The side where you're being accused of something and in this day and age, police are illegally allowed to lie to you, legally allowed to do anything but their jobs. You'd be surprised, well, I don't do anything wrong. There are people who are in prison right now who did nothing wrong. And that's how that, that's how that works. But you know, if, if I were ever in that situation, or if, if you or anyone were ever in that situation, wouldn't you wanna be represented by someone who looks like you, who comes from your culture, who understands you and your neighborhood and your background?

• 1:02:37Speaker 03

And yeah, of course, there are gonna be white people who are the good ones, who, you know, hopefully if I represent someone who doesn't look like me, and I have obviously, that I do my best to represent their interests like any great advocate would. But god, it's the same thing as like going to the OBGYN. I know there are good male ones. I want a woman. Sorry, and that's a personal fucking opinion, right? I don't think that y'all should lose your licenses. I mean, it's weird and creepy at a party for sure. I'm gonna side eye you, but that's just me, that's me personally.

• 1:03:07Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, something stinks about that.

• 1:03:08Speaker 03

But why, but people say, yeah, you're, you have the right to say, no man up my vagina when I'm giving birth. Why wouldn't you have, why shouldn't you be able to have that choice on the worst day of your life? Need a lawyer and you need someone. And I'll tell you, there aren't enough of people who, who are from marginalized communities because of all the barriers in this field. So for those who can scale them, for those who can be here, there are people here who are holding the door open for you. And I'm one of them and there are, I'm not the only one, just because I'm online doesn't mean there aren't thousands of them just like me, better than me, more experienced than me, who can make it so that one day, we don't have to have that conversation anymore.

• 1:03:50Drew Afualo?

Yeah, it doesn't have to be a, a plea, if you will, for people to like endure like all those invisible barriers in order to change it.

• 1:03:58Speaker 03

Right, because the people, the people who built those barriers will die. And they are, which is great.

• 1:04:05Drew Afualo?

Well, thank you so much for coming on the show. I fucking love you.

• 1:04:09Speaker 03

  I love you too.

• 1:04:09Drew Afualo?
