How you feeling? How's life going for you?

• 2:13Speaker 01

  Life's alright.

• 2:14Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, you're a busy bee.

• 2:15Speaker 01

  I am.

• 2:16Drew Afualo?

Yeah, you got a lot going on.

• 2:17Speaker 01

I just got back from Iceland.

• 2:18Drew Afualo?

Oh, my god, how was that?

• 2:19Speaker 01

It was so fun. I did a show over there.

• 2:21Drew Afualo?

Ooh, okay. What's the crowd like in Iceland?

• 2:23Speaker 01

Very great. I mean, Icelandic people are kind of quirky anyway.

• 2:28Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 2:29Speaker 01

So they, I think, got the silliness that I'm bringing to the table.

• 2:32Drew Afualo?

They were picking up what you were putting down?

• 2:34Speaker 01

Yeah, we kind of, and, and I'm a sturdy woman and they have sturdy women. It's the one country where I don't get called sir. I loved it.

• 2:44Drew Afualo?

  That is a win.

• 2:45Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:46Drew Afualo?

Yeah, depending on who you ask, that is a win.

• 2:47Speaker 01

They're like, you're one of us. I said, sure.

• 2:49Drew Afualo?

  One of us.

• 2:52Drew Afualo?

I get it, though. I'm also a sturdy woman.

• 2:54Speaker 01

Listen, we, but we hold it down.

• 2:56Drew Afualo?

  I think so.

• 2:57Speaker 01

People come to us. They want us to be the base of their pyramids. When they, you know, want to do one of those cute pictures where everyone's on each other. We're the base.

• 3:07Drew Afualo?

They're like, well, Fortune will be at the bottom.

• 3:09Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 3:09Drew Afualo?

  Okay.

• 3:10Speaker 01

  I got you.

• 3:11Drew Afualo?

It's either that or I'm taking the picture, so.

• 3:15Drew Afualo?

She'll take the picture. Right. I know, being a big, everyone in Hollywood is itty bitty small.

• 3:20Speaker 01

They're itty bitty, but we're doing our own thing.

• 3:23Drew Afualo?

I know. I just, I was shocked when I got here.

• 3:26Speaker 01

  A lot of short people.

• 3:27Drew Afualo?

Yeah, everybody's so unbelievably tiny. Like, I had Maren Morris here.

• 3:32Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 3:33Drew Afualo?

And she sat in that chair like an American Girl doll.

• 3:35Speaker 01

She's like this part of the chair.

• 3:37Drew Afualo?

Yeah, like her feet were completely straight. I was like, you're too small.

• 3:41Speaker 01

Her legs are just that way.

• 3:42Drew Afualo?

I was like, you need to, you need to grow more.

• 3:44Speaker 01

I'm like, god dang. Can I fit in this?

• 3:48Drew Afualo?

I know, you and me both. But I come from a big family. Do you come from a big family?

• 3:51Speaker 01

  I sure do, yeah.

• 3:52Drew Afualo?

Big, I, you know what's funny is like, when I tell people, like, my perception of like larger bodied people or just tall people, big people.

• 3:59Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 4:00Drew Afualo?

Is vastly different from other people's, because sometimes when they see, because my dad is six six.

• 4:05Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 4:05Drew Afualo?

So my dad's a big dude, so like, when they see me, they're like, whoa. If they saw my dad, I don't know what would happen.

• 4:12Speaker 01

You're like, I ain't nothing. Well, how tall are you?

• 4:16Drew Afualo?

  I'm six feet.

• 4:16Speaker 01

  Yeah, I'm five ten.

• 4:17Drew Afualo?

Okay, nice. I think I'm gonna start lying and saying I'm five ten.

• 4:21Speaker 01

  Yeah?

• 4:22Drew Afualo?

Yeah, because I'm getting into acting.

• 4:23Speaker 01

Oh, not, yeah, with the six in front of it.

• 4:26Drew Afualo?

I'd love to get some advice from you on that a bit, but like, I just started dipping my toe into acting. I would love to move into it. And I, obviously, like, I do self tapes and, you know, for the slate, they have you say, like, where you're, where you're located and your height.

• 4:39Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 4:39Drew Afualo?

And I just recently hired an acting coach and I asked him, I was like, can I ask you a question?

• 4:43Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 4:44Drew Afualo?

Does height matter, like, when I say, because I tell, I say I'm six feet in this slate? But I think it's working against me, me not even factoring talent. I'm like, it has to be my height. It has to be my height.

• 4:57Speaker 01

What do they think about my height?

• 4:59Drew Afualo?

That's what's preventing me from getting the roles.

• 5:01Speaker 01

Can you say five, five eleven?

• 5:03Drew Afualo?

That's why I, he told me five ten, five ten, five eleven.

• 5:06Speaker 01

Yeah, I mean, I guess if you say five ten, no one's, they don't really know.

• 5:10Drew Afualo?

  Measure me?

• 5:11Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 5:11Drew Afualo?

If you do, then I say misogynist.

• 5:13Speaker 01

And you already have the job at that point?

• 5:15Drew Afualo?

Well, and I, and I, when I asked him, he was like, that's a great question. In short, yes, it does. He's like, so I have some clients that are men. And I'm like, well, that doesn't make me feel good, opening the conversation like that. Like, alright. And he's like, and they're like six, three, six, four. I have a couple. And he goes, when the role comes in, it's superhero, I'm like, he's six, four.

• 5:35Speaker 01

  Right.

• 5:35Drew Afualo?

When it's love interest, I'm like, he's five, ten.

• 5:38Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 5:38Drew Afualo?

And I was like, that's a huge jump. I'm gonna start telling people I'm five, two.

• 5:41Speaker 01

I think that you, I think five tens were the land.

• 5:44Drew Afualo?

  I think so.

• 5:44Speaker 01

  That's where we're gonna go.

• 5:45Drew Afualo?

I even told my fiance, I was like, what about five, nine? And he goes, no.

• 5:49Speaker 01

  Yeah, no, five, ten.

• 5:50Drew Afualo?

He's like, they're gonna know you're lying. Just like, I was like, alright, relax, not too much on me, calm down.

• 5:56Speaker 01

  Calm down.

• 5:56Drew Afualo?

Yeah, but I, I was really thinking, I was like, I really think guys, I was, me telling my team, I know nothing. I'm like, I think it's my height.

• 6:03Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 6:03Drew Afualo?

I think that's why, because some of the reads, they're not huge parts, but like, some of the, they're like love interest.

• 6:08Speaker 01

  Uh huh.

• 6:08Drew Afualo?

So if I say six feet, they're gonna be like, damn, no.

• 6:10Speaker 01

All the guys in Hollywood are like, five, six.

• 6:13Drew Afualo?

I know. And then I'm like, well, what's a girl to do?

• 6:17Speaker 01

I'm not reading for the love interest part, so I don't, I don't worry about it. I'm the quirky, crazy person that flies into a scene and acts insane.

• 6:27Drew Afualo?

Well, maybe I gotta switch up my, my MO then.

• 6:29Speaker 01

I mean, listen, I think you should go for whatever you want to do, but that I've learned where my sweet spot is. And mine is maybe insane person.

• 6:37Drew Afualo?

And you're, and you're booking the roles left and right. I gotta learn from you.

• 6:40Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 6:41Drew Afualo?

I, I, I'm so curious, cause I had this, this is just a random fear, me just creating problems out of nowhere, but I was like, I was thinking about love scenes in movies. Have, have you done a lot of love scenes?

• 6:51Speaker 01

No, no one's, weirdly enough, Hollywood's not asking for that. I, I had my first on-screen smooch.

• 6:59Drew Afualo?

  Okay, how was that?

• 7:00Speaker 01

In, uh, it truly was just a smooch. I was like, like that. They're like, don't, don't do too much.

• 7:06Drew Afualo?

  Not too much, okay?

• 7:08Speaker 01

On, on the mini project, I was actually, my character gets engaged on the show and we don't kiss.

• 7:15Speaker 01

  In hindsight, that's wild.

• 7:17Drew Afualo?

  That is crazy.

• 7:18Speaker 01

I'm just proposing to this person and we're like.

• 7:21Drew Afualo?

You stand like brothers every time you're sitting together?

• 7:23Speaker 01

What's up? So yeah, somehow my first on-screen kiss was, uh, in Foo Bar this last season.

• 7:30Drew Afualo?

  Nice.

• 7:31Speaker 01

And, uh, we like, uh, had some big victory and she just gives me a little smooch, but, but it wasn't like the, ah, that kind of thing.

• 7:40Drew Afualo?

  How was it?

• 7:40Speaker 01

That would be awkward doing the like, ah.

• 7:43Drew Afualo?

That's what I'm saying. Cause I was thinking me, and I, it was so funny when I had this irrational fear, I was telling, uh, my cousin, who's my hair makeup artist. It's like four in the morning, we're glamming. He's like, he's like glamming and I'm like, and then I'm thinking, what if I have a love scene? Like, how am I gonna do that? Like, is it just the thought of doing it icks me out so bad that I like, it makes me not wanna act? Like, I'm being so serious. I will do it.

• 8:04Speaker 01

  I will do it, Hollywood.

• 8:05Drew Afualo?

I will do it. Yeah, Hollywood, if you're listening. Uh, that being said though, I was telling him, I was like, and then what am I gonna do? Am I just not gonna take the role? Like, I'm, I'm creating these fake scenarios that have not happened. I didn't even have an acting agent.

• 8:18Speaker 01

Cross that bridge when the, when it gets here.

• 8:21Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, for real.

• 8:21Speaker 01

Like, how am I possibly gonna do a love scene?

• 8:23Drew Afualo?

Oh, how am I gonna break it to James Cameron? How am I gonna tell him? How am I gonna tell Christopher Nolan? I can't go through with the scene.

• 8:29Speaker 01

Just be ready to talk to an intimacy coordinator.

• 8:32Drew Afualo?

  Me prepping.

• 8:33Speaker 01

Yeah, they coordinate all that stuff.

• 8:35Drew Afualo?

Right, and I'm telling him and he goes, okay, first of all, you haven't booked anything, so calm down. And I was like, right, you're right. You're writing.

• 8:42Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 8:42Drew Afualo?

  I needed that.

• 8:42Speaker 01

  Let's wait for that part.

• 8:44Drew Afualo?

He's like, second of all, why don't you just wait till you book something?

• 8:46Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 8:47Drew Afualo?

  Alright.

• 8:48Speaker 01

  Yeah, but also-

• 8:49Drew Afualo?

  A little girl can't gab.

• 8:50Speaker 01

Do all the things. Try out for the love interest part and also the crazy creepy people too.

• 8:54Drew Afualo?

I think I would make an awesome, like, crazy best friend. Or like a-

• 8:57Speaker 01

  For sure.

• 8:57Drew Afualo?

A bitchy mean girl. I think I would kill.

• 8:59Speaker 01

Yeah, absolutely. Either one, a fun friend or crazy friend. You got both.

• 9:03Drew Afualo?

How is the auditioning process? Like, do you have any tips for me?

• 9:06Speaker 01

I hate it. The auditioning part's the worst.

• 9:09Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 9:10Speaker 01

I, I book everything that's handed to me. But when they go, you got the part.

• 9:17Drew Afualo?

  Yes, yes.

• 9:18Speaker 01

Uh, but not when I audition. It's a longer road. Um, but at this point in my career, I'm kinda like, uh, it's not like I'm, I would understand if it was like, um, part that's like way out of my wheelhouse. But most of the stuff is in the vein of what I do.

• 9:35Drew Afualo?

I'm trying to be like you.

• 9:35Speaker 01

So I'm kinda like, at this point, I'm like, you know, you've seen me do this.

• 9:39Drew Afualo?

You've seen it, you know I can do it.

• 9:40Speaker 01

A thousand times. My range is that big. Like-

• 9:44Drew Afualo?

  I disagree.

• 9:44Speaker 01

You either want this or you don't.

• 9:47Drew Afualo?

I think I could see you in House of the Dragon or something.

• 9:49Speaker 01

  Yeah, maybe.

• 9:49Drew Afualo?

  I think you could be.

• 9:50Speaker 01

Some scary ass person in like a scary movie that's, you know-

• 9:55Drew Afualo?

  Oh, yeah.

• 9:55Speaker 01

One of those, I could do something like that.

• 9:57Drew Afualo?

They'd make me cross-dress for sure. If they put me in one of those. They'd make me that giant gnome that was fighting with the wildlings. Like, that's who they'd cast me as.

• 10:05Speaker 01

I'd be like the woman in a trailer that's a band, you know, been abandoned by everyone and just like, you know. Hadn't

• 10:13Drew Afualo?

  Just a couple of stairs.

• 10:14Speaker 01

Bathed in a long time. I'd be one of those people. But yeah, auditioning, it's not the best.

• 10:21Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 10:22Speaker 01

You know, some people are amazing auditioners and then on the day, they don't really bring it.

• 10:26Drew Afualo?

  That's true. Yeah, that's true.

• 10:28Speaker 01

Which I don't think is helpful.

• 10:29Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 10:30Speaker 01

I, I like to think I bring it on the day.

• 10:32Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, you said, just wait.

• 10:33Speaker 01

Well, because it was, that's like with stand up too, and if, if I've had to like host something, they kind of want you to go through your material earlier in the day. You're just kind of like, I'm like, it'll be fine later.

• 10:44Drew Afualo?

  Trust me, it's gonna kill.

• 10:45Speaker 01

Yeah, when it's time, you kind of come alive. That's

• 10:47Drew Afualo?

  That's tea.

• 10:48Speaker 01

Sort of how I do it.

• 10:49Drew Afualo?

I love that though. I think the acting coach I worked with too, he told me like a lot of times it's confidence more than anything.

• 10:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 10:55Drew Afualo?

Like, like moving with confidence is like a big, huge part of it.

• 10:59Speaker 01

  For sure.

• 10:59Drew Afualo?

And he's like, and then sometimes I'll, when people like, they start booking off confidence, like they don't really need me as much. And then if they get something that's harder,

• 11:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 11:06Drew Afualo?

They'll come back to me and then we'll work on that. And I was like, okay, that makes me feel a little bit better.

• 11:10Speaker 01

It's good that you're going to somebody that helps. I mean, I've been to people throughout, you know, my career, especially if it's a harder um, uh, role or like, I've tried out for things that it, that are out of my wheelhouse and I've been proud of putting that work that, you know, pushed myself to do something different. But yeah, I think it, you know, getting off book, very important. I used to like complain about that all the time.

• 11:34Drew Afualo?

  Really?

• 11:34Speaker 01

Like, I don't want to memorize this, but it really makes a difference. Like

• 11:37Drew Afualo?

  No, that's so true.

• 11:38Speaker 01

  To be present.

• 11:39Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, that's so true.

• 11:40Speaker 01

And like, look people in the eye when you're, you know, doing the audition and, um, and yeah, the confidence definitely helps if you're like timid or

• 11:48Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, totally.

• 11:49Speaker 01

  They don't want that.

• 11:49Drew Afualo?

  I'm sure.

• 11:50Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 11:50Drew Afualo?

When you're doing it. No, that makes me feel a lot better about it.

• 11:53Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 11:53Drew Afualo?

Especially, I want to move to stand up. Like

• 11:55Speaker 01

  Alright.

• 11:55Drew Afualo?

I would love to know like, what drew you to stand up in the first place? Like what made you want to go into it first?

• 12:01Speaker 01

Well, I started the Groundlings first.

• 12:02Drew Afualo?

  Love.

• 12:03Speaker 01

  Um, doing

• 12:03Drew Afualo?

  Iconic.

• 12:04Speaker 01

Yeah, they're so great. Uh, improv first and then sketch comedy. Uh,

• 12:09Drew Afualo?

  How do you like improv?

• 12:11Speaker 01

I love it. It's so silly. You know, I love it, but it's like, it's ridiculous. But that's the best part about the Groundlings is that you, you're an adult, kind of not caring what people think.

• 12:21Drew Afualo?

  Which I love.

• 12:21Speaker 01

Yeah, you're allowing Yourself to be silly and and their their goal is to push you to the point where you're not judging yourself.

• 12:29Drew Afualo?

  Oh, I love that.

• 12:30Speaker 01

  Ego involved.

• 12:31Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 12:32Speaker 01

So I think that's bled into my stand up of not being afraid to be sill- look silly or be silly.

• 12:37Drew Afualo?

  Totally.

• 12:37Speaker 01

I'm not trying to be some, you know, sex pot up there.

• 12:42Speaker 01

I don't look like one, I'm not trying to be one. I'm just being ridiculous.

• 12:45Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 12:46Speaker 01

And I think that started with improv.

• 12:49Drew Afualo?

  Totally.

• 12:49Speaker 01

Um, and then sketch helped me learn how to write and essentially most of my acting uh skills came from

• 12:58Drew Afualo?

  Improv.

• 12:59Speaker 01

Improv and and doing the the sketch shows. Uh, so I was there about six years and while I was there, uh, I started my own sketch comedy group.

• 13:07Drew Afualo?

Oh, cool. What was the name?

• 13:09Speaker 01

Gas money. Just trying to make gas money.

• 13:12Drew Afualo?

I always ask the name. I love the name.

• 13:14Speaker 01

We were broke. I just needed some gas money. Uh, but it was, uh, I found it was hard to get stage time back then. Now they have a lot more opportunities.

• 13:23Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 13:23Speaker 01

Uh, but back then you only got stage time if you were in the company. And I was like, how do we get in the company if we don't have stage time? So I started my own group while I went through the school and uh, a friend came to a show and she was like, why aren't you doing stand up?

• 13:38Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 13:38Speaker 01

I was like, cause it looks really hard. And she's like, just do it. So she helped, uh, get me in touch with a friend of hers who had a a class. I took a class like a nerd and

• 13:51Speaker 01

But I think it's kind of fun to do that because it's a structure.

• 13:54Drew Afualo?

  Totally.

• 13:55Speaker 01

Uh, where you go, oh, once a week I'll go do this class and that will make me on stage and make me get in, uh, talking to a microphone. And you don't necess- no one can really teach you how to be a stand up, but they can teach you like, here's some

• 14:08Drew Afualo?

  General structure.

• 14:08Speaker 01

Yeah, structure and and just do it. And, uh, it got me to just do it. And at the end of the six weeks, there was like a show.

• 14:15Drew Afualo?

  Oh, nice.

• 14:16Speaker 01

And once I got on stage and did did a set, I was like, oh, I'm hooked.

• 14:20Drew Afualo?

  Did you love it?

• 14:21Speaker 01

  I loved it.

• 14:22Drew Afualo?

  Immediately?

• 14:22Speaker 01

  Immediately.

• 14:23Drew Afualo?

  I love that though.

• 14:24Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 14:24Drew Afualo?

  So great.

• 14:25Speaker 01

And I think having done improv and sketch, it made me way more comfortable on

• 14:30Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 14:30Speaker 01

Uh, stage, cause half of stand up is just Learning to be comfortable.

• 14:33Drew Afualo?

  That's true.

• 14:34Speaker 01

And if the audience can sense that you're not comfortable. They are not on board with you. Uh, they sniff it out.

• 14:44Drew Afualo?

Almost immediately, like blood in the water.

• 14:46Speaker 01

But again, that confidence, if you've, if you're having a good time, you're like, your, your energy's telling them they're in good hands. They'll be at ease.

• 14:54Drew Afualo?

That's such a good point. I like did, I, I've tried stand up. I was avoiding it forever because I was like, I love stand up so much that I was like, I really don't want to find out the hard way. I'm bad at it. Like, cause it's literally like going up there and perform, and then they're just, they don't have to laugh. You're not funny, they're not going to.

• 15:11Speaker 01

  That's true.

• 15:12Drew Afualo?

So that was like, and I have, my ego is not too big to admit, I know I'm funny online. Doesn't always translate.

• 15:19Speaker 01

  But you're confident.

• 15:20Drew Afualo?

Yeah, that is true. I am very confident. But I was like, I was worried, and maybe that's proof that I wasn't like an asshole being, trying to do stand up. Cause you know, men will tell like a couple jokes on TikTok and they're like, I should quit my job.

• 15:35Drew Afualo?

I should start picking up shifts at the Laugh Factory.

• 15:38Speaker 01

Well, just you doing your, your podcast and I know you've toured and I mean, that's great, like practice for that, just being on stage, being in a mic. It's already half the battle.

• 15:48Drew Afualo?

And our mutual friend Caleb, he bullied me into trying stand up.

• 15:52Speaker 01

That's what Caleb's for, to bully people.

• 15:55Speaker 01

  He's so funny.

• 15:56Drew Afualo?

For real. And he, he came and watched me live, um, here in LA. And then afterwards, he was like, you need to do stand up. And he, cause, and he was telling me and I was like, I, I mean, maybe, but I was, I know, you know Caleb. He wouldn't lie to me.

• 16:12Speaker 01

He would have a great time, you know, just telling you the truth if he thought otherwise. Uh, being like, girl, you should not be doing this. Have a ball going down that road.

• 16:21Drew Afualo?

He's like, it was fun. You shouldn't do it anymore, but it was fun. Have you, um, well, in stand up, have you noticed any, like, are there any cities that are your faves to tour?

• 16:30Speaker 01

Gosh, there's so many good cities. I mean, I've been touring now fifteen years. Nonstop. Uh, I got into stand up two thousand and seven and then started touring two thousand. Ten, um, a lot of crap crappy shows and uh cafeterias of colleges and stuff like that. But uh I just, you know, I if every year and a half, I would go back to a new city. Uh and build, you know, call it building the markets. And so I'm very lucky that a lot of these markets I have been building every, once a year, every year and a half. So I go back to these places and have such a nice rapport like um Chicago's one of the best.

• 17:13Drew Afualo?

  That was fun.

• 17:13Speaker 01

  Comedy cities, yeah.

• 17:15Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 17:15Speaker 01

Uh Dallas, very, yeah, I mean, I, I'm shocked sometimes at where I sell. I, I sell more tickets in Dallas than I do like in San Francisco. It's bizarre to me. I, I don't quite understand.

• 17:28Drew Afualo?

  Southerns winning over gays.

• 17:29Speaker 01

Yeah, I don't know. So um that's a trip. Nashville's great. I mean, uh but then you go to these, some of these like random markets. Like a Mobile, Alabama.

• 17:39Drew Afualo?

  Mm hmm.

• 17:40Speaker 01

I, I was like having dinner in a restaurant on the main strip that leads to the theater. And after dinner, my opener and I are walking, I'm like, let's just walk to the theater. And it's like a parade start, everyone's like jumping out of their cars and like, hey, hey. And he's like, what's happening? I go, I don't know. They're just so pumped to like have, you know, people come to their city like.

• 18:03Drew Afualo?

  That's true, because they're smaller.

• 18:04Speaker 01

They're smaller. And so some of these bigger cities, you know, or have a plethora of entertainment and.

• 18:09Drew Afualo?

And they're used to it. My, my manager says they're spoiled.

• 18:12Speaker 01

  They are.

• 18:12Drew Afualo?

Like LA, San Francisco, New York.

• 18:13Speaker 01

Yeah, so I like to go to these smaller markets and uh it's, it feels like such a treat, you know, that.

• 18:20Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 18:21Speaker 01

Uh they treat me well and, and I have such a good time. So.

• 18:25Drew Afualo?

  That's good.

• 18:26Speaker 01

At thi- at this point, there's not, there's very few places where I'm like, I'm not going back there. Uh most places I'm pretty pumped to return to.

• 18:33Drew Afualo?

Yeah, Joel Kimbooser told me it was Arizona. Like he was like Phoenix specifically. He's like, I've gone.

• 18:38Speaker 01

  Phoenix.

• 18:38Drew Afualo?

Yeah, he goes, I've gone twice, bombed both times.

• 18:41Speaker 01

  Not for him.

• 18:42Drew Afualo?

I laughed about it. He was like, and the second time I was like, well, you know, the first time was different. He goes, second time even worse. So I said, never mind, don't book me there anymore. And we laughed about it. But I, I get what you mean, because when I was. On tour last year, I was shocked that one of our first cities that sold out was Columbus, Ohio.

• 18:57Speaker 01

Oh, Columbus is an amazing comedy city.

• 18:59Drew Afualo?

Y'all are freaks out here. Like, I was shocked at how many people showed up.

• 19:03Speaker 01

And for me, that they have a huge gay community there, so I get a lot of love in Columbus, but it is a very good city for comedy.

• 19:10Drew Afualo?

It was so fun. I had a blast there. Dallas too. Dallas was really fun for me when I went there. Uh, I'd love to ask this, uh, question to comics, but like, do you have any jokes that you know hit in certain cities versus others?

• 19:23Speaker 01

Yeah, I mean, like, when I'm in the south, I know that I'm talking more about biscuits and my Hooters jokes and stuff. It's a bit more reverent there, or I, or I have jokes about church and stuff, like there are churches on every corner there. Um, and then maybe like a west coast, uh, maybe talk more gay stuff and. But for the most part, cause I'm always working towards shooting a special. So every tour of mine now is very structured. It's a year and a half to two years. It's a hundred, uh, cities at least, uh, a hundred and fifty shows. And, and the whole, uh, year and a half to two years, I'm just building the act towards filming it.

• 20:05Speaker 01

So most of the time, it's a similar set, but it's constantly evolving. And I'll change the order a lot. I'll punch stuff up. So it's fun for people to see it, like, uh, some people will see it in the very beginning and how it, it evolves. Near the end, yeah, and then some stories, once, you know, cause two years have passed. You're like, that story's not as fun anymore, and you'll pull it and, and something new will have. By the time the special comes out, two years.

• 20:34Drew Afualo?

But still, you're working all the time.

• 20:35Speaker 01

Yeah, and it's, it's wild. Like, I've, uh, done three hours and two half hours. I never thought I'd have this much material. I didn't think I'd have one hour, so I can't believe I'm, you know, to that point, but it's just a different time. It used to be comics put out a special one every four years or something.

• 20:53Drew Afualo?

When you're as unbelievably funny as you, they're like, more, more, more, more.

• 20:57Speaker 01

I don't know. I just think people are like consuming content so much faster now.

• 21:02Drew Afualo?

  Landscape has shifted.

• 21:03Speaker 01

So now if you don't put out one every two years, they're like, what are you doing? And you're like, isn't this enough? And I'm like filming in between, like I'm acting for like five months in between. So maybe, so yeah, but no, this will be about a year and a half to two years. But, um, but yeah, for, yeah, I think at this point, the people coming to my shows, most of those people know

• 21:25Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, they love you.

• 21:26Speaker 01

Or who I am. Um, so I'm not having to win them over as much.

• 21:31Drew Afualo?

  Which is nice.

• 21:32Speaker 01

  It's helpful.

• 21:33Drew Afualo?

Yeah. Oh, yeah. Well, I mean, you worked your ass off to get the audience. So that makes sense.

• 21:37Speaker 01

That's part of the building those markets.

• 21:38Drew Afualo?

  Totally.

• 21:39Speaker 01

Occasionally there will be some people that wander in and you can see the shell shock. You're like, where am I? Who are, what are all these gays doing here?

• 21:50Drew Afualo?

There's this many of you here?

• 21:52Speaker 01

But I actually, my audience about, it's about half and half.

• 21:54Drew Afualo?

  Okay, nice.

• 21:55Speaker 01

  About half straighties, half gays.

• 21:57Drew Afualo?

Right. I, I get real shocked when I have straight men in any room I'm in. I'm like, really?

• 22:03Speaker 01

  They're, yeah, they're usually with a, a, the girlfriend who's, you know.

• 22:06Drew Afualo?

  Exactly.

• 22:07Speaker 01

And the girlfriend's always like, I dragged him here. And you're like, okay.

• 22:12Drew Afualo?

Yeah. He's like, yeah, she did. And you're all right, relax.

• 22:15Speaker 01

But the, the, there is such a victory in seeing the guys, like their arms kind of crossed in the beginning where they're like, you can tell they did not want to be here and were dragged. Uh, and then they're the ones that, you know, at, at the end of the show, high fiving me like, that was so funny. That's always feels good.

• 22:33Drew Afualo?

  I, I agree.

• 22:34Speaker 01

To see them like come on to, uh, the side of really loving it.

• 22:39Drew Afualo?

Yeah. Get on board with you. Yeah. You're like, I'm gonna get you. Don't you worry.

• 22:42Speaker 01

  Get you, mister.

• 22:45Drew Afualo?

And I know you're from the south. You're from North Carolina, yes?

• 22:47Speaker 01

  Carolina, yeah.

• 22:47Drew Afualo?

Where in North Carolina are you from?

• 22:48Speaker 01

Uh, it's a tiny town called Belmont, right outside of Charlotte.

• 22:51Drew Afualo?

  Okay. See, cause my assistant.

• 22:53Speaker 01

  We were talking, yeah.

• 22:54Drew Afualo?

She's from Wilmington. Yeah. She was telling me all about it. I was like, don't know anything. This, that's my thing to do to white people is like when they're from the same geographical location. I'm like, I know someone who's from there.

• 23:04Speaker 01

Yeah. Like you guys know each other?

• 23:06Drew Afualo?

Yeah. My agent's Canadian. So any, anytime I meet a Canadian person and she's in the room, I go, she's Canadian.

• 23:12Speaker 01

  You're so pumped about it.

• 23:13Drew Afualo?

You guys have so much in common. You should talk.

• 23:16Speaker 01

Have you ever been in North Carolina?

• 23:17Drew Afualo?

  No, I haven't. I don't thi- wait, have I?

• 23:19Speaker 01

  On tour?

• 23:20Drew Afualo?

No, I don't think so. Me forgetting. Like, I don't believe so, no. But we are planning to go to her hometown.

• 23:27Speaker 01

  Oh, really?

• 23:27Drew Afualo?

Yeah, like, cause she wants to show us around.

• 23:30Speaker 01

Well, it's pretty great. You'll like it.

• 23:32Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 23:32Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 23:32Drew Afualo?

She was telling us all about it. She talks about it all the time. Sometimes she tells us things and I'm like, that sounds like a made up place.

• 23:37Speaker 01

Yeah, you're like, well, you know, it's where they shot Dawson's Creek.

• 23:39Drew Afualo?

Yes, that's what she told us.

• 23:42Speaker 01

Which is more my generation. I, uh, people now are like, what? It was all the rage back, back when.

• 23:50Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, Katie Holmes, right?

• 23:51Speaker 01

Yeah, I know about it. Like, who was it? James Vanderbee?

• 23:57Drew Afualo?

I know. So the South is in your set a lot, I bet?

• 24:00Speaker 01

  Well, it's just.

• 24:00Drew Afualo?

  Part of you.

• 24:01Speaker 01

Part of me, yeah. I've been here twenty-two years in LA, but my accent is very thick. I don't know how to shake it. It's not going anywhere.

• 24:09Drew Afualo?

I'm glad you still have it.

• 24:10Speaker 01

  I mean, it, I think it's different.

• 24:12Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 24:13Speaker 01

It's, it's, uh, it helps me with comedy in that I can like ham up some things.

• 24:19Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 24:19Speaker 01

As a result and use it to my advantage. Um, but yeah, I think having just grown up in the South and being around a lot of characters, uh, people that are real, who you, when you describe them to people, they're like, there's no way that's a real person. Like, that is the people that I grew up around. So it's such a part of me and my storytelling.

• 24:40Drew Afualo?

  Totally.

• 24:41Speaker 01

That, uh, that, yeah, that part of me just kinda comes out. But I've been west coast for so long that it's this mix of like, that southern thing and the manners with the west coast chill.

• 24:53Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 24:54Speaker 01

  Uh, kinda.

• 24:55Drew Afualo?

  Selfishness.

• 24:55Speaker 01

Into one. Yeah, a lot of selfishness. I'll do what I want. And, uh, jeans.

• 25:00Drew Afualo?

  I'm familiar, yeah, and jeans.

• 25:02Speaker 01

A lot of jeans. I'm a forty-five-year-old woman in Nikes. What? That's crazy. But that's west coast, baby.

• 25:13Drew Afualo?

  That's you blending in.

• 25:15Speaker 01

Yeah, I might go home and my, everyone that else my age is not wearing this, I promise you.

• 25:23Drew Afualo?

Well, you said in between touring stand-up, you also film and obviously you're a very successful actor as well. Um, how'd you get into acting? Like, how'd you, was that kind of a natural progression from stand-up?

• 25:32Speaker 01

Yeah, I was on Chelsea lately for four years, three years as a writer and then on the panel. And so I would do a lot of sketches for them and coming from the groundlings, uh, doing a lot of characters and, um, so I was dabbling in that world, but not real like acting, um, and I, it just was always a goal of mine to do it.

• 25:53Drew Afualo?

  Love.

• 25:54Speaker 01

And, uh, so I took acting classes and, uh, on my, uh, in my free time. And then when Chelsea, uh, Chelsea's show ended, I got, I tried out for a pilot for Fox, uh, and got it. And so that was like my first big, uh, booking of, of something and I was so excited. It was a Tina Fey produced pilot and really funny, uh, and it just, it was gonna get picked up. It was one of those, uh, Hollywood things where it was set to go and then the, they fired the president of the network and the new people came in. There's all that politics behind the scenes and so it, yeah.

• 26:33Speaker 01

So it went away, but, uh, I had Tina's ear for a second and I, I was like, oh, let me just pitch her. I'm gonna just pitch her a show and I, I just pitched her, you know, they say write what you know. And so I just pitched an idea based of, on my life and, uh, she, she really liked it. So the guy that wrote the pilot I had just done, he wrote it with me and we sold it to ABC. Uh, and shot, and we got to shoot the pilot. It was called Family Fortune, uh, really cool. Like a little bit before its time because I played a gay person in the South. And, cause this is like 10 years ago.

• 27:07Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 27:08Speaker 01

  And, uh,

• 27:09Drew Afualo?

  That would kill now.

• 27:10Speaker 01

Oh, I know. Back then they're like, we can only put it on one gay show at a time. Yeah.

• 27:16Drew Afualo?

And Ellen's still here, so you can't.

• 27:17Speaker 01

  That's right.

• 27:18Drew Afualo?

  That, that spot's been taken.

• 27:19Speaker 01

Yeah, and, uh, and it didn't get picked up. Um, but, uh, one of the writers on the Mindy Project, Lang Fisher, who also, uh, co-created, um, Never Have Ever with Mindy Kayling, uh, she told Mindy about me. She's like, I just did punch ups on this pilot. And they had this part of, um, that was of a southern, uh, brother sister duo. And, uh, it was supposed to be three episodes and, uh, they hired me for the three episodes. That led to like nine episodes, which led to three seasons. So shout out to Mindy. Uh, she is who basically started my acting career.

• 27:59Drew Afualo?

  That's so cool.

• 28:00Speaker 01

Um, I, everything I learned about being on set and being a professional actor was on that show.

• 28:05Drew Afualo?

  That's so sick.

• 28:06Speaker 01

I was in such good hands. I mean, Mindy's an incredible writer and showrunner and creator. And I never had to worry about anything. The, the jokes, the, the material was incredible.

• 28:16Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 28:17Speaker 01

So to like get to like have three years of acting classes, basically.

• 28:22Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 28:22Speaker 01

On a Mindy Kayling show is pretty incredible.

• 28:25Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, absolutely.

• 28:26Speaker 01

And, and I just have been acting ever since. That just opened the door.

• 28:29Drew Afualo?

Fucking cool. Did you get to do like, um, a lot of improv and stuff once you were like?

• 28:33Speaker 01

On that show, no, because, just because they're, her having come from the office, like their writing was so good that it needed nothing from me. Like occasionally I'd add a little something here and there.

• 28:46Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 28:47Speaker 01

That's one of the few projects I've been on where I did not add a thing.

• 28:51Drew Afualo?

  That's true.

• 28:52Speaker 01

Um, but once I left there, a lot of things I've done, they'll, they'll be like, cause I kept writing and I was kept, kept selling projects and, um, so my writing got better over the years. And so they'll usually be like, film it how it's written and then do your thing. So like in office, I did this small part in my office Christmas party, uh, where I played the Uber driver to Jennifer Aniston. And they said to me like, this scene is kind of a throwaway scene, but it has an important piece of information. You have to tell her there's a Christmas party at the office. Uh, but you can basically rewrite the scene. And I was like, oh, cool. So I completely rewrote the whole scene.

• 29:29Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 29:30Speaker 01

And then improvised this whole thing about her name being an old name. And God bless Jen Randison. She just went along with it. You know, she just had no idea what I was gonna say. I had no idea what I was gonna say. And it just led to this whole crazy scene that ended up testing super high when they were, um,

• 29:51Speaker 01

Testing the movie and they brought me back to end the movie, so it was It's cool when you get to like, put your little stamp on things.

• 29:57Drew Afualo?

Hell yeah. And you're just that fucking funny.

• 29:59Speaker 01

Well, I just think as my standup has grown.

• 30:02Drew Afualo?

  Hell yeah.

• 30:03Speaker 01

People now trust, like, they go, oh, well, we know she writes for herself.

• 30:07Drew Afualo?

  Totally.

• 30:08Speaker 01

So, let's, uh, there's a little more trust there, I guess.

• 30:11Drew Afualo?

Yeah. Do you have like, I wouldn't say a favorite, but would you say there's some aspect of the business that you like more or lean more towards like, writing, acting, standup?

• 30:19Speaker 01

  Definitely not writing.

• 30:20Drew Afualo?

No, no, not writing. Even though you're really good in it?

• 30:23Speaker 01

I mean, it's just, I just do it because I have to.

• 30:25Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 30:26Speaker 01

You know, it feels like homework.

• 30:27Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 30:28Speaker 01

If it, I, I, I would have never guessed in a million years, like, when I was in college, that I would be writing all the time. It feels like college has never ended. I just always

• 30:38Drew Afualo?

  I'm being tortured.

• 30:39Speaker 01

Like, I open my computer, I'm like, oh, God. It really is like that, because, you know, you're writing like, books almost.

• 30:46Drew Afualo?

  Right, literally.

• 30:47Speaker 01

Standup is like, writing a book. And, um, so, and I'm always creating pilots and projects, and so it's just So, I've been working on one movie idea for seven years.

• 30:59Drew Afualo?

  Damn.

• 31:00Speaker 01

It's constantly being rewritten, constant notes.

• 31:08Speaker 00

So, it's my least favorite, but it is the most, um, efficient to, like, if I had not written that pilot for myself, I would not have gotten the mini project. You know what I mean?

• 31:53Drew Afualo?

  Totally.

• 31:53Speaker 01

Because if I had auditioned for the mini project, probably wouldn't have gotten it. Based on my audition skills. But so I learned early on in my career that to create for yourself is your best avenue. You see that with your podcast, it's opened so many doors, right?

• 32:10Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, you're so fucking me.

• 32:12Speaker 01

You've got to create your own path. Yeah, you have to show the business, the industry, what you can do. They're not waiting to to give you that opportunity.

• 32:22Drew Afualo?

  That's so true.

• 32:23Speaker 01

Um, so, yeah, so that's what I learned early on was just like, I gotta forge my own path. Because when I started, being different was not celebrated.

• 32:33Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 32:33Speaker 01

Uh, and it was not, um.

• 32:35Drew Afualo?

  Represented in media at all.

• 32:37Speaker 01

And and they were, they just did not know what to do with me. So I had to show them.

• 32:42Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, what you could do.

• 32:43Speaker 01

Yeah, so now I'm just continuing to do that. So at this point, the writing is just a means to an end. Uh, I think I, stand up is probably the most rewarding.

• 32:53Drew Afualo?

  Mm hmm.

• 32:54Speaker 01

Because, um, I'm actually getting to stand in front of people and, uh, get an immediate reaction.

• 33:00Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, hear the laughter.

• 33:01Speaker 01

Yeah, and I'm sharing who I am. I'm telling a lot of personal stories.

• 33:05Drew Afualo?

  Totally.

• 33:05Speaker 01

So I think people feel like they know me as a result.

• 33:08Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 33:08Speaker 01

So it's created this very like relatable interaction between me and whoever watches my stuff. And then acting is fun. It's fun. After being on the road for so long, you know, you've been on the. I don't do tour buses, but you've been on tour. It's, you get so tired.

• 33:23Drew Afualo?

  You don't do the bus?

• 33:24Speaker 01

I don't do the bus. I can't do the bus.

• 33:26Drew Afualo?

I did the bus and I flew some.

• 33:28Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 33:28Drew Afualo?

Cause I only did twenty two days, like in like four and a half weeks. So it was like, almost like six days on, one day off.

• 33:35Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 33:35Drew Afualo?

Like four or five days on, two days off. Like that's kind of how we did it. Um, and I really thought, I was like, I'm gonna hate that fucking bus. Like, I just felt like I, that was gonna be the case. Then when we started doing it and we were like driving every night, I was like, every time the bus left me, I was like.

• 33:50Speaker 01

  Oh, really?

• 33:51Drew Afualo?

  Every time.

• 33:51Speaker 01

Cause you were like in your little nook.

• 33:53Drew Afualo?

Yeah, and like you have all your things. Well, and it's just like going in the hotels, like going in day rooms and shit like that. It felt like I was on the run. I felt like Jason Bourne. I just felt like go in there, change my underwear, shower, wipe everything down, leave.

• 34:03Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 34:04Drew Afualo?

So it felt like every time I was like, I can't even lay down.

• 34:07Speaker 01

  I know, yeah.

• 34:08Drew Afualo?

Pull up this blanket. I literally just have to wipe, I have to change my chonies and head out.

• 34:12Speaker 01

Yeah, I mean, if I was gonna do like, I could like, oh, you gotta do like a bunch of dates in this amount of time, I could, I would do a bus. But because I dr- I draw mine out, yeah, I, I think as I'm a, a, a cancer. So I like to be at home, I'm a homebody.

• 34:29Drew Afualo?

  Me too.

• 34:29Speaker 01

So if I'm like gone for, if I was gone for months at a time on a bus, I think I would have a hard time with that.

• 34:34Drew Afualo?

Yeah, that is. Uh, yeah, Taylor Thompson told me she tours like that, like she kinda does it in long spurts. So that way she's kind of a little more relaxed.

• 34:43Speaker 01

Yeah, cuz I, I wanna have balance, you know, like I work really hard cuz and, and have my hands in a lot of different things, but I think also like having a life, seeing friends, seeing family, going to lunch with someone.

• 34:59Drew Afualo?

  Totally.

• 34:59Speaker 01

  It's important.

• 35:00Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, absolutely.

• 35:01Speaker 01

And so I don't wanna just disappear for like six months on a bus.

• 35:04Drew Afualo?

I agree. I think, I call that normal human people time. Like now, cuz I'm like, I need to go hang out with people who don't give a fuck about me. I need to hang out with people who don't think I'm the most hilarious bitch they've ever met.

• 35:14Speaker 01

You need the balance, you gotta stay grounded, that's for sure.

• 35:17Drew Afualo?

Do you have friends and family that are pretty humbling for you?

• 35:19Speaker 01

Oh, everybody in my life is very humbling.

• 35:22Drew Afualo?

Yeah, Caleb's one of them, he's in both our lives.

• 35:24Speaker 01

I have not been allowed to be too full of myself ever. And I'll be like, I'm important and there, and then I'm like cleaning out some junk drawer of my mom's and I'm like, alright. Whatever.

• 35:37Drew Afualo?

I know sometime, I, I forget who it was, but, oh no, I was like, my sister at once, she told me, I had posted a video or something that was me making fun of someone and then she was like, how's the funniest one you've posted in a while?

• 35:50Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 35:51Drew Afualo?

So and I said, I post every day, but thanks.

• 35:53Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 35:53Drew Afualo?

Thank you, I appreciate that, thank you.

• 35:56Speaker 01

Thank you, I appreciate it so much.

• 35:58Drew Afualo?

I'd actually love those notes, thank you, they mean a lot to me.

• 36:01Speaker 01

Please continue giving me this. Constructive criticism.

• 36:05Drew Afualo?

Have you ever gotten any, uh, any notes on your, on your sentence though from like unsolicited notes?

• 36:10Speaker 01

  Oh, God.

• 36:11Drew Afualo?

  All the time?

• 36:11Speaker 01

  From fans?

• 36:12Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, fans, men, anyone?

• 36:14Speaker 01

Yeah, of course. People like to put their two cents in.

• 36:17Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 36:18Speaker 01

Listen, I don't mind if someone's like, hey, I have a funny tag for you. Cause, uh, I mean, usually it's garbage, but, um, once in a blue moon, someone's got like.

• 36:28Drew Afualo?

You're like, alright, that was kinda funny.

• 36:30Speaker 01

I didn't think of that. And I'm like, very appreciative because as you've heard with the writing, I'll take any help I can get.

• 36:36Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 36:36Speaker 01

Uh, but yeah, sometimes people will, you know, throw in a few notes. You're like, okay, let's calm down. Now, my mom's very good about, uh, she, she'll keep it real with like, oh, that's not my favorite story. But, but, but when she loves something, she really loves it. So then I know I'm on to something.

• 36:56Drew Afualo?

Nice, nice balance for you. That's it. What, do you know Grace Kuhlenschmidt?

• 37:01Speaker 01

No, but what a fun last name.

• 37:03Drew Afualo?

  I know.

• 37:03Speaker 01

  Kuhlenschmidt?

• 37:04Drew Afualo?

  Kuhlenschmidt, isn't that funny?

• 37:05Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 37:05Drew Afualo?

  She's a, she's a stand-up too. And she, um, she's really funny.

• 37:09Speaker 01

I might know her face some, but how could you, how could I forget that name though?

• 37:12Drew Afualo?

Yeah, yeah. She, uh, she told me that her grandma watched her stuff once and was like, I just don't get it. Like, ah, you're not really marketing towards like 50 and up.

• 37:23Speaker 01

  Oh, God.

• 37:23Drew Afualo?

And she was like, yeah, believe it or not, that's not my target demographic.

• 37:27Speaker 01

She's like, I don't want them to come to my show. They probably won't like what I'm talking about.

• 37:32Drew Afualo?

Yeah. And she's, and she's gay too. So she's like, yeah, believe it or not, um, over a certain age, like they're not really looking at me.

• 37:37Speaker 01

  That's funny.

• 37:39Drew Afualo?

So I get, I get it though.

• 37:40Speaker 01

Yeah, I would be like, but you know, it's like, I'm not, I'm not marketing to like tw- 20 year olds, you know? Like what, how are they gonna relate to me? You kinda know where your lane is.

• 37:51Drew Afualo?

That's true. That is very true. That's why I love to ask, especially female comics. I love to ask them if they've ever gotten notes from people in the crowd.

• 37:59Speaker 01

Oh, you're always gonna get notes. I mean, that's just, that's just part of it. You're also gonna just get comments in general.

• 38:05Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 38:06Speaker 01

Whether you want them or not, they're coming. But I try not to pay too much attention to it. I'm just sort of always doing my thing.

• 38:13Drew Afualo?

Um, and you know what? That's why you're doing so fucking well. Cause you're not listening to some bullshit ass notes.

• 38:19Speaker 01

I'll listen to the comics in my life that I, you know, I, I welcome their notes and want, and want the feedback.

• 38:27Drew Afualo?

Yeah, but from a random, I'm good. It's okay. One of us is getting paid to do it. So it's, I think I have a pretty good idea.

• 38:35Drew Afualo?

• 39:16Drew Afualo?

like I was put on the car, like on the lineup. Like, so like, nothing about that is me asking for notes, right? But this, like, I did get notes, like my team met with like the people that booked me. And they were like, oh, like we did have some notes like on the set, which I thought was shocking.

• 39:34Speaker 01

Wait, the people that booked you had notes? Oh, that's odd.

• 39:36Drew Afualo?

  And it's because.

• 39:37Speaker 01

  That's not the norm.

• 39:38Drew Afualo?

Right. And it's because it was, uh, brand sponsored. So these, at first my team was confused because they were like, you guys have notes or?

• 39:47Speaker 01

They had notes like, we don't want you to talk, say this kind of thing. Cause it might look bad for the brand.

• 39:52Drew Afualo?

But not even, it wasn't even for that. Cause I didn't say anything bad about the brand. In fact, I amplified the brand very much so. Because it was like, uh, it was something that I knew was important. So I didn't say anything bad about the brand, didn't talk bad on it, nothing. Um, their note for me was that I was too mean to men and that could be isolating. So. And I was supposed to be on another show and I was like, yeah, I'm not going to that shit. Like you guys are, hold on, you're, you're telling me you're not allowed to talk about that.

• 40:18Speaker 01

  That's, that is interesting.

• 40:19Drew Afualo?

And I remember I text Caleb and he said, giving a comic. Notes on to just be nicer in the set is probably one of the funniest things I've ever fucking heard.

• 40:28Speaker 01

Well, just that you were being too mean about men. It's hilarious.

• 40:32Drew Afualo?

And I barely touched them, if I'm being honest. I was fighting with one hand tied behind my back because I knew.

• 40:38Speaker 01

So some man gave you that.

• 40:41Drew Afualo?

He was like, I don't know. I just felt like she was alienating me. Mind you, he's like a fifty year old man. I'm like, believe it or not, bitch, you're not my target.

• 40:48Speaker 01

  That's not, not the target.

• 40:49Drew Afualo?

Yeah, the jokes I was telling and the laughter you were hearing was for everybody else in the room. And I killed too, if I may say so myself.

• 40:57Speaker 01

Say it, girl. You have two eyes and two ears. You heard what you heard.

• 41:02Drew Afualo?

I will say in the beginning, like a joke sometimes I use is like, is there anyone here that was like a plus one and has no idea who the fuck I am. Like, that's sometimes something I I start out with. And then there's always, and especially if there's men in the room, I know they're gonna raise their hand because they want attention. And they like to claim this spot of like, I don't know who you are. And then I go, okay, well, I hope you enjoy the show. I did this all tour too. I was like, I hope you enjoy the show. Hope you have fun. And if you don't.

• 41:34Speaker 03

• 42:36Drew Afualo?

I have your money already, so it really doesn't matter either way. I don't care if you have a good time. And then I just kind of get into it.

• 42:42Speaker 01

Yeah. And that's what feminism means to me.

• 42:46Drew Afualo?

Exactly. That's called making the patriarchy work for you. Okay, I do have some fun facts about you.

• 42:51Speaker 01

  Oh, okay.

• 42:52Drew Afualo?

If you'd like to get into it with me. Okay, right here we have, in high school, it says you were a debutante and you went to etiquette training to prepare.

• 43:00Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 43:01Drew Afualo?

When I see you, I think debutante.

• 43:03Speaker 01

You think a pretty little lady.

• 43:05Drew Afualo?

  A southern belle.

• 43:06Speaker 01

A delicate flower. Yeah, that's not my most proud time of my life. My mom made me, I wasn't even gonna ever talk about it, but when I was doing my first special, Sweet and Salty, my producer was a friend, is a friend of mine, she's like, you gotta talk about this. Like, is it so crazy? And it's so not you. That like, it's a funny like tidbit about you. And it was something that my mom made me do.

• 43:31Drew Afualo?

  Really?

• 43:32Speaker 01

Um, because she had been one, she'd been a debutante, but by the time I was coming around, we were broke. Like, no money. And it costs money to do these parties and have all this stuff. So like, you know, I'd come home and the couch would be missing, you know?

• 43:49Speaker 01

I'd much rather have a couch than go to this dumbass party. But she was so, I think, trying to kind of reclaim those days.

• 43:57Drew Afualo?

  Totally.

• 43:58Speaker 01

You know, and I'm like, we're not, that's not us. Like, my dad grew up in a trailer. Like, those days are long gone. You, you did not marry well. I don't know what to tell you. You did not marry a guy that was gonna keep your status in the debutante world.

• 44:16Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 44:16Speaker 01

But she, yeah, so I did this, I did this thing and I had to learn like manners and stuff and

• 44:22Drew Afualo?

  And how was it?

• 44:23Speaker 01

  wipe my mouth and

• 44:24Drew Afualo?

Oh, like witch fork to use and stuff like that?

• 44:27Speaker 01

I mean, it was fine, but I, you know, so not me. And, uh, so it was the summer between high school and college that I had to do it.

• 44:37Drew Afualo?

Oh, nice. The most humiliating age.

• 44:39Speaker 01

I know. Going to these tea parties and but a good friend of mine Was in it too, and that kind of

• 44:50Speaker 01

Well, speaking of brother, uh, brother wives.

• 44:54Speaker 01

I, they, you have a, there's a ball, like you're coming out to society. So I came out twice. They have, usually you're presented by like your dad, but my, my mom's like, your father's not doing this. And, uh, some of my brothers did it. So there's a picture of me in a white wedding gown with my brother in a tux and it looks like I'm marrying my brother.

• 45:20Drew Afualo?

I knew it. I was on to it. I knew it. They were mad because I was right. And now it's time for a new segment, Finding Comfort in the Chaos, brought to you by Amazon. College comes with so much change, but thanks to Amazon, you can get everything you need to embrace the challenges that come your way. My time at the University of Hawaii taught me so much about how to take care of myself when things feel chaotic. Adulting for the first time can be messy. So let me tell you what I wish I'd known back then. Obviously I'm older than most of you. Don't talk about it. But when I was in college, obviously using an iPhone alarm was helpful. But what I found even more helpful was to buy a literal alarm clock like our ancestors and plug it in somewhere across the room for me.

• 46:02Drew Afualo?

So I had no choice but to get up on time and get to class. So I highly recommend. We all know the chaos of college is inevitable. As much as you prepare, there will always be challenges you didn't expect. But that's what it's all about. Embracing those messy moments and learning from them. With Amazon's great deals and everyday low prices, you can find comfort in the chaos. Shop off to college at Amazon. Save on college. Save the everyday. Uh, it says that you played college soccer, college tennis, and you graduated summa cum laude. So did I.

• 46:37Drew Afualo?

How did you find comfort in the chaos of college life?

• 46:41Speaker 01

I love college. I had a blast. I went to a women's college. Not, I didn't know I was gay, uh, which was a real.

• 46:49Drew Afualo?

No, you just really wanted to be around only women?

• 46:51Speaker 01

I know, it was a real missed opportunity. Uh, but I'd always been like an overachiever.

• 46:55Drew Afualo?

  Totally.

• 46:56Speaker 01

I love in high school too.

• 46:58Drew Afualo?

  Same.

• 46:58Speaker 01

College, all the thing. I like went to class all the time. I never skipped. I was like student body president. I just loved it. So I found great comfort in the chaos. I loved being busy, loved being social, loved the dorms. Chatted with everybody. They thought I didn't study because I was constantly chatting. But I would go in my room at like eleven and study for a couple hours and then sleep.

• 47:22Drew Afualo?

You and Caleb have a lot in common in that too. I made fun of him when he was on my show last time. I made fun of him because I said, I knew he was in a frat. Like he joined a frat.

• 47:30Speaker 01

  That's so funny.

• 47:31Drew Afualo?

And I, I made, I was like, what are you doing? That's philanthropic. And then I was like, I'm kidding. I know you did a lot of philanthropy in college because you were student body president too. And he was like, yeah, I was gonna say you're about to feel real bad when I tell you all this stuff. But that's because you're a big chatter.

• 47:43Speaker 01

  Right.

• 47:44Drew Afualo?

I think that's a southern thing. You love a good chat too.

• 47:46Speaker 01

I love a chat. But I can also be very quiet as well. I have both sides. I'm a little bit more introverted than one might assume, but that's just where I regroup. And then I go out and chat.

• 47:57Drew Afualo?

I get that. When I'm talking a lot or performing a ton afterwards, sometimes I go sit somewhere by myself and I just stare.

• 48:04Speaker 01

You just gotta be alone for a little bit.

• 48:06Drew Afualo?

Yeah, and I just, I'm like, I need to shut the fuck up for a second.

• 48:09Speaker 01

Yeah, because I talk a lot. You talk a lot. Sometimes I'm like, I don't want to hear one more story out of my mouth. And I'm going to go sit in a corner and yeah, stare.

• 48:20Drew Afualo?

Yeah, I'm just gonna sit and be like.

• 48:21Speaker 01

  Not gonna say a word.

• 48:23Drew Afualo?

I'm gonna stare right into the camera. That's what I would do. No wonder we're looking into the camera so often. That's what's disassociating. Uh, this next one says that you realized you were gay when you were twenty five while watching a Lifetime movie.

• 48:34Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's right.

• 48:35Drew Afualo?

  Which Lifetime movie was it?

• 48:37Speaker 01

The Truth About Jane. I don't know if you've ever heard of it. It's Dr. Channing who plays Rizzo in Grease.

• 48:45Drew Afualo?

  Okay.

• 48:45Speaker 01

Uh, was the mom and her like sixteen year old daughter realizes she's gay and has a mentor at school, a teacher who's gay. Um, and as I described it, uh, the, the sixteen year old comes out to her mom and her mom's like boo. And then by the end of the movie, she's like, yay. And I was like, and that's the movie. But I had had, you know, I, it was weird. It was, I, I talk about how it was just different times. When I was twenty five, it was like YouTube was just starting and uh, there was no Will and Grace, uh, or, or maybe it just come out. The L word had just come out, like, but when I was growing up, there was none of that stuff, you know, none of that, uh, representation.

• 49:30Speaker 01

So I never like saw myself in anything and, and I just grew up in a very small town that I did not know one gay person. I did not see a gay person hold hands till I was in college.

• 49:43Speaker 01

So I was just very naive to that world and knowing what that was in myself. Uh, and so when I moved to LA, it was starting to bubble up. I was starting to feel the thing and that you're kind of like fighting like, this cannot be, I have to, I haven't found the right man. Insane.

• 50:01Drew Afualo?

And every time you say you gag a little.

• 50:02Speaker 01

Yeah, like now it seems like crazy that that was even a possibility. Um, and then I was watching that movie and just something about seeing this person who's young, being brave enough to like come out, made me go, at the end of the movie, I was like, oh my God, I'm, I'm gay. And I, I said it out loud for the first time. And it was what kind of cemented it for me of like, oh, this is real. And so my joke was, you know, they say that, uh, having gay people in movies will make people gay and they're right.

• 50:38Drew Afualo?

And in my case, you are correct.

• 50:40Speaker 01

  You're right.

• 50:40Drew Afualo?

Okay, one out of a million. This, in this particular case, you are right. I think that's a beautiful thing, though. Like, representation like that, I think is so important.

• 50:50Speaker 01

Yeah, you need it, cause you know, especially if you grew up in a small town. My, my town was twelve thousand people. If you don't know people like you or see people like you, like you know, some things different. You know, in that, uh, you don't know what it is. It just feels like something's off. And when you're young and you're Gay and you don't know it, you just know that boys don't look at you a certain way, you don't have a rapport with them in a certain way. So you just feel like you don't quite fit in, like, why, and it, and it can't help but chip away at your self-esteem to a extent, like, why am I not the object of this person's affection?

• 51:33Speaker 01

A- a- and you don't know that, well, the reason is because, you know, you're meant to, you're not, that's not, yeah, you just don't know, so you just think something's wrong with you, um, so that when you see that in front of your face and it, the light bulb goes off. You go, oh, my god. That was the missing puzzle piece all along. I wasn't, it wasn't that I was undesirable, or I was this or that, or it wasn't, it just, I didn't know.

• 51:59Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, absolutely.

• 52:00Speaker 01

And now it seems, you know, thank thankfully, there's a lot more representation, it's talked about a lot more. You see it a lot more.

• 52:07Drew Afualo?

  A lot more visible.

• 52:07Speaker 01

Yeah, it's not quite as hidden, um, but, but still matters, for sure.

• 52:12Drew Afualo?

Absolutely, and that's why I think you're, even though writing is the bane of your existence in a lot of ways. I also think it's a beautiful thing that you write so much because it like, that kind of writing is so important, like, writing characters like that. Based in real life and not always centered in trauma of some kind, I think is a beautiful thing.

• 52:29Speaker 01

  Well, thank you.

• 52:30Drew Afualo?

I think that's why you just keep selling them over and over again, you're changing the computer.

• 52:34Speaker 01

I'm just telling my story, you know, I'm just, I'm just trying to, uh, yeah, that's kind of, I know what to do is tell my story and my, how I see the world and if it helps people in any way. That's like the cherry on top.

• 52:47Drew Afualo?

I think that's why it's working so well for you. The universe is working with you and for you.

• 52:52Speaker 01

  Thank you, universe.

• 52:55Drew Afualo?

Of course, okay, we have more fun facts. Uh, this one says, oh, you got your comedy start taking improv classes at Groundlings in LA. After moving here from your hometown. Oh, it says, when you were twenty-three, you got a job as an entertainment journalist interviewing people on red carpets and it turned into a full-time job for seven years. Was that with Chelsea too, or no?

• 53:13Speaker 01

That was right before Chelsea, so that was during, there was like an eight-year period where I was trying to make it in comedy. And so my day job was being a journalist. Which was really cool, like, to, you know, that, to that have, sorry, we can't talk. To have that be my day job, it was like awesome, cause it was like adjacent to the business.

• 53:36Drew Afualo?

Learning a different side of it too.

• 53:37Speaker 01

Yeah, I got to go on all these red carpets and I interviewed all these people I really admired, all like all these, you know, huge movie stars and TV stars and yeah, I went to like the Grammys and the Oscars and the Emmys, I went to movie premieres and I was, you know, started when I was twenty-three. And did that until I was thirty, um, and that's what kept my bills paid and then at night I did comedy. So I loved it.

• 54:01Drew Afualo?

You have been working your ass off.

• 54:04Speaker 01

If I had wanted to be a journalist as a career, I would have.

• 54:09Speaker 01

It did not get better than that in that world, uh, and I, I worked for some amazing people that knew I wanted to be a comic. Cause sometimes you're working at one job and they don't like that you have another goal. But they were so like supportive and like.

• 54:25Drew Afualo?

Enhanced your skill as an interviewer. Cause I do carpets now too all the time. I'd love to know your experience, like how was that? How did you like interviewing people?

• 54:33Speaker 01

Well, we were in the, we were in the beginning stages of the internet having all the entertainment news on it. So you would see all these people ham it up for the cameras and then come to me and be like, what's up, what's going on? Cause it, it was like print journalism. But I, we were like, we actually reached a lot more people than this, whatever, you know, random.

• 54:57Speaker 01

And, uh, but like once people started talking to me and he heard my accent, they kinda like dropped the pretenses. Just had like a real conversation with me. So I've had some really lovely conversations with actors and stuff and and I talked to a lot of people on the phone for like thirty minutes and what happens, I'm like, just really interesting talks. People that I've, it's funny, I've since run into publicists or people photographers from the red carpet. They'll see me now on the other side and it's such a trip.

• 55:29Drew Afualo?

It's also, they are this, it's the same people like working, especially during the award season circuit, like you see the same people every time. And they. Are so drama-rama. Like in press boxes, you know, like in those press, uh, like areas and stuff, like, cause everybody knows each other. So it's almost like, it feels to me like, uh, like if we were all at camp together and then this is like our mess hall and then we all come here and everyone's talking about each other. I just like some, I just be listening. Sometimes the, the girls fight at those things.

• 56:00Speaker 01

Oh, that's funny. Yeah. When I was doing the red carpets, the, it was entering into that phase of the, paparazzi was becoming a big thing. Uh, Star Magazine was a big thing and like when they were like stalking celebrities. Weird. That was a weird thing and I would overhear them talking about all the lengths they were going to, to like spy on people. I was like, y'all are crazy. That was like, those were like the Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears.

• 56:28Drew Afualo?

  That era.

• 56:29Speaker 01

Paris Hilton era where they were, you could see them all over town.

• 56:33Drew Afualo?

And following them everywhere. Like it's like, like a caravan almost.

• 56:36Speaker 01

Yeah, it was wild. I, you would just see this train of people just like, and you're like, what is going on? It'd be like Lindsay Lohan going to the Ivy or something. A weird time.

• 56:46Drew Afualo?

  It, it was weird.

• 56:47Speaker 01

LA back then was there, yeah, it was different. There was just like celebrities everywhere and cameras everywhere. Very weird.

• 56:55Drew Afualo?

I think that's so cool that you were, um, on the carpets for so long too. Cause I, I've been doing carpet stuff. For a minute now, like I'm, I'm really kicking it into overdrive lately and I love doing carpet stuff. They could care less if I'm there though. Like I, sometimes people are like, oh my God, you guys are going to the Oscars? I'm like, yeah, they also told me they'll shoot me dead if I step outside the shrub. So like there's, you know, there's all, when I get there, I'm the help. Like when I get there, they're like, rally some cars while you're here.

• 57:21Speaker 01

It's a weird thing. It's like cool. You're like adjacent to it, but then it's like, you're also there and that's cool. But yeah, it's, it was a trip. I interviewed like Anna Nicole Smith and like,

• 57:32Drew Afualo?

  Oh, that's crazy.

• 57:33Speaker 01

Julie Andrews and like, I mean, all the way from, you know, Tom Hanks is like, all the, all these neat people, um, that I just, I'm actually, I, cause in my, in that special sweet and salty I mentioned, I talk about how, When I first started the red carpets, I wanted to look more LA, so I went to Forever Twenty One. And uh bought a velour uh tracksuit with a pink cupcake on the back. And everyone thought I was kidding, I was like, no, no, I bought a velour tracksuit, you know.

• 58:03Drew Afualo?

That said red carpet to you?

• 58:05Speaker 01

Yeah, to me, I thought, this is very LA, red carpet, and you know, the, these clothes dissolved in the sun after like five days. They were like twenty dollars and dissolved in the sun. And everyone was like, ha, ha, hilarious, and um, there's a documentary about Sirin McKellen. And I'm in, I was at the Lord of the Rings premiere, and you can see me with my pink. Yeah, I have a pink cupcake interviewing Sirin McKellen. I took a screen grab, I'm like, I told you.

• 58:38Drew Afualo?

At the Lord of the Rings premiere?

• 58:41Drew Afualo?

You're just like, I need to make a statement.

• 58:43Speaker 01

I'm interviewing Sirin McKellen in a blue velour tracksuit with a pink cupcake on the back. Not okay.

• 58:52Drew Afualo?

  I would love that, though.

• 58:53Speaker 01

I mean, god, I, I just was really trying to be the, my best LA.

• 58:57Drew Afualo?

And, and pull focus at any point?

• 58:59Speaker 01

And I did, cause I'm sure they were like, ooh. What the, what is that?

• 59:05Drew Afualo?

I, I, sometimes I'm sure you got this question a lot too, like, I, I'll get questions about celebrities, like, how are they, like?

• 59:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 59:11Drew Afualo?

Are they cool? And I'm like, most of them are kinda weird, but like, they're nor- they're very nice.

• 59:14Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 59:15Drew Afualo?

For the most part, I, I honestly have had way more positive ones than negative ones, and negative ones I've had, they weren't talking to me. Like, it was just, I saw something, so I was like, oh, that's kinda weird.

• 59:24Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 59:25Drew Afualo?

Uh, but thankfully, I haven't really had any terribly negative ones, like, it was like, generally nice, but. I think too, and you're, I feel like this is the same kinda energy you have too, where it's like. I've told people, if you just talk to them like they're normal, most often times, they'll be awesome, because, especially when they're that famous, like, they've been. They've been so not normal for so long, like, nobody treats them normal, that's not their, like, immediate family, like.

• 59:49Speaker 01

  It's true, yeah.

• 59:50Drew Afualo?

They live in this weird bubble, where like, everybody, like, is so careful and weird around them and awkward, so I feel like. Kind of like normal to them. They they open up a little bit more.

• 1:00:01Speaker 01

Yeah, I mean, that's kind of how I've always been like when I was a journalist, I was just like, hey, what's up? Let's chat. And that's what I'm like now on set when I I've gotten to film with some really cool people and but I don't go in too hot, you know?

• 1:00:14Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:15Speaker 01

I'm like, I'm gonna let them come to me or or I'll just like give people their space and then then I'll just be like, hey, how's it going? This is so cool, you know?

• 1:00:23Drew Afualo?

Absolutely. I feel like it's it's a very, you're a big energy reader too, like a vibe reader.

• 1:00:28Speaker 01

  That's the cancer in me.

• 1:00:30Drew Afualo?

  And I'm a cancer moon.

• 1:00:31Speaker 01

  There you go.

• 1:00:32Drew Afualo?

  So there you go.

• 1:00:33Speaker 01

I, yeah, I just feel, I feel people's thing, you know, and so if I can pick up pretty quick if if I'm like, oh, this person does not want to be bothered, I don't bother them, you know? Or if they're in a weird mood or whatever. And and eventually the, you know, if you're, especially if you're working on a set with this person, at some point they'll come around and they're like, what's your deal? You know? So you gotta, you do just like let them come to you and but then you can tell if someone's energy is open.

• 1:01:02Drew Afualo?

  Totally.

• 1:01:03Speaker 01

Yeah, I just kind of read their, I think I read the room well.

• 1:01:05Drew Afualo?

Same. And I, and it's funny because I've told people like when they, whenever they're like, oh, they should all, everyone should be journalists. Mind you, I uh, like on carpets, mind you, I went to college for journalism, so I I do actually have a journalism degree and I was a journalist for a long time, so.

• 1:01:18Speaker 01

  Awesome.

• 1:01:19Drew Afualo?

Yeah, I learned how to shoot, edit, write, all that stuff. So like, I actually do have the credentials.

• 1:01:23Speaker 01

  I did not, so.

• 1:01:25Drew Afualo?

My point being, now that I do this as like an influencer, right? There is that debate that's like, it shouldn't be influencers, it should be journalists, to which I say like, I don't think the badge matters nearly as much. I think it's the ability to read a room is far more useful, like.

• 1:01:40Speaker 01

And the ability to talk to someone and have a conversation.

• 1:01:43Drew Afualo?

And I feel like, and I, and sometimes I've joked, I've been like, I've seen how women on the internet treat me in real life and I'm a, again, I'm a clown for hire. There's no way you'd be able to talk to Timothy Chalamet normal.

• 1:01:56Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:01:56Drew Afualo?

I've seen how you treat me. You guys treat me weird and he's way more famous than me. Like, that's where I'm like, I I think like the ability to relate and be normal and cool and read a room, it's very important.

• 1:02:07Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:02:07Drew Afualo?

Because I think sometimes too, when you try to force silliness on people that do not want to be silly.

• 1:02:12Speaker 01

You can tell when they don't want that, yeah.

• 1:02:15Drew Afualo?

Immediately I pick it, I'm like, perfect, no fun, got it in the back.

• 1:02:18Speaker 01

We're gonna keep it straight and narrow.

• 1:02:21Drew Afualo?

And I, I did the White Lotus premiere. This year and Parker Posey is obviously a huge person and and the White Lotus is season and she was killer. And they told me a ton. They were like, you know, she doesn't um love interviews anymore like. Yeah, cuz I I she's just been doing it forever. I'm sure she's just sick of it. And like the premiere was the last stop on their press tour. So they were like. Basically telling me like, don't hold your breath. Like if she doesn't want to talk, I'm like, alright, alright, I'm not gonna force it. And I told them, I was like, I'll save everybody the headache. I really don't force it if they're not feeling it.

• 1:02:54Speaker 01

  For sure.

• 1:02:54Drew Afualo?

I promise I won't. And they were like, okay. So she came and uh she she agreed to talk to me for a little. Uh and so I was talking around and I asked her like a real standard question. How do you feel being here, whatever, kind of warm her up?

• 1:03:05Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:03:06Drew Afualo?

And then she was being so like, she's so witchy. I just sensed it about her. I was like, she I feel like she loves astrology. I feel like she loves crystals. Like, that was kind of her energy. And then I said, what's your sign? When she said something, she goes.

• 1:03:18Speaker 01

There you go. You got her.

• 1:03:21Drew Afualo?

I'm a Scorpio. Could you tell?

• 1:03:22Speaker 01

Oh, she's a Scorpio. That makes things a little bit.

• 1:03:26Drew Afualo?

Right, like it makes more sense. Right. And so when she was.

• 1:03:28Speaker 01

  She's private, protective.

• 1:03:30Drew Afualo?

Yep, yeah. And then so when I said that, she goes, what are you? And then we just kept talking. She talks so like pageantry, like the way she talks feels very like old Hollywood. And so then uh she talked to me for a minute and I was like, oh, it's so lovely to meet you. She goes, oh, are we done? We're done now? And they were so like, I can't believe she was so fun with you. And I was like, I read her vibe. And I didn't ask her too many silly things.

• 1:03:52Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:03:53Drew Afualo?

Whenever like I was like, older people don't like to be asked silly.

• 1:03:55Speaker 01

  Dig into that meaningful uh.

• 1:03:58Drew Afualo?

  The stars.

• 1:03:58Speaker 01

  The star stuff, yeah.

• 1:04:00Drew Afualo?

We wanted to align on the stars. Okay, I have another fun fact for you. Uh it says, one of your first credited roles was janitor in the movie The Secret Lives of Dorks.

• 1:04:10Speaker 01

Oh, my god, yeah. That was like, I that was the very first acting role I ever did. And it was like, I was when I was on Chelsea lately. Someone saw me on Chelsea and just was doing like an indie comedy and they were like, does she wanna play a janitor? At that point, I just wanted the experience.

• 1:04:27Drew Afualo?

  Hell, yeah.

• 1:04:28Speaker 01

  I was like, sure.

• 1:04:29Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:29Speaker 01

But, yeah, it was, that was my first taste of anything. I mean, when I first auditioned, I want to say, I auditioned for something like, uh, I don't remember what it was, early on. And I did my audition looking right into the camera. And the lady had to stop me. She goes, um, don't look in the camera, look at me. And I was like, uh huh, okay. And then, and then at the end, she goes, alright, um, now slate. And I go,

• 1:04:55Speaker 01

what, what is that? She's like, you just say her name and.

• 1:04:59Drew Afualo?

Yeah, I know what it is, but do you know what it is?

• 1:05:01Speaker 01

So I had no clue. So, I mean, you know, I always say they, they have these acting classes for people. There should be a class of practical things, like, here's how to audition.

• 1:05:11Drew Afualo?

  Don't look at the camera.

• 1:05:12Speaker 01

Here's what this means. And like when you're on, because I had a friend who's a big stand-up, who had a fir, an acting role for the first time. And I knew she wasn't going to know a lot of the lingo, so I called her. And I was like, this is what, you know, this is like hitting your mark. This is finding your light. This is, you know, this is what this means. And when the A D, you know, that you just need a class of like, here are all the things.

• 1:05:33Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 1:05:34Speaker 01

I think that would be more as much as a help as an acting class.

• 1:05:38Drew Afualo?

  The verbiage.

• 1:05:39Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 1:05:40Drew Afualo?

And they do talk in shorthand a lot. Yeah. You know what's funny is, um, when I did, last year I, I was in an NBA commercial.

• 1:05:47Speaker 01

  Uh huh.

• 1:05:48Drew Afualo?

For reasons I still don't understand. They asked me to come. I said, sure. Yeah, I'd love to be there.

• 1:05:53Speaker 01

You're like, I'm six feet. That's when you owned it.

• 1:05:56Drew Afualo?

That's where my, that's where it was working in my favor. Exactly. And, um, in one of my scenes, or the only scene actually I had, was, uh, with Kelly Rowland.

• 1:06:05Speaker 01

  Uh huh.

• 1:06:06Drew Afualo?

  Which is nuts.

• 1:06:07Speaker 01

  Hell, yeah.

• 1:06:08Drew Afualo?

And, uh, so, yeah, so she, she was so nice and so professional. But I remember like, they told me what I was gonna do, like my line was, follow me, Kelly. That was my one, my one line. I think I killed it. But they wanted me to like, close the laptop and like, in earnest and be like, let's go, kind of vibe. So I was like, okay.

• 1:06:27Speaker 01

  Uh huh.

• 1:06:27Drew Afualo?

So when I was practicing, it was one of those things where it's so simple and it's one line that I felt like I was overthinking it a little bit. And then for some reason, like, for like, two takes in a row, I looked at the camera twice, like.

• 1:06:40Speaker 01

  Ah, I do that now.

• 1:06:41Drew Afualo?

Yeah, but in a way where I was like, and then the, and then the director would be like, cut, don't look at the camera. And I'm like, oh my god, I'm so sorry. Sorry about that. Like, sorry. And then every time it came around, I'd be like,

• 1:06:51Speaker 01

Well, it's so hard because it just naturally you're just like sort of drawn to it. I mean, even in this latest food bar, I I I'll be at, you know, talking to someone and I'll be like, oh, my God, I just stared down the barrel of the camera. I'm so sorry. Then they're like, well, don't end the scene, but keep going.

• 1:07:10Drew Afualo?

Right. I know you're like, sorry about that, guys, looking right at the camera.

• 1:07:14Speaker 01

  They're like, just keep going.

• 1:07:16Drew Afualo?

I agree with you, though, on verbiage. You should you should make like a glossary.

• 1:07:20Speaker 01

Yeah, because like when you're starting out and you want to know how to audition, what to do, yeah, it's very intimidating.

• 1:07:27Drew Afualo?

And I feel like even with, especially when you're on the set, like in the the heat of it and everyone's watching. And then when everyone gets quiet.

• 1:07:35Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:07:35Drew Afualo?

Because I remember too, when I first started doing this, I was almost exclusively just like online people influencers, right? And sometimes, like, at the beginning, we would be, everyone would have to be super, super quiet because we were trying to do mu- obviously, it's a podcast.

• 1:07:50Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:07:50Drew Afualo?

But then after a while, I was like, I don't mind if you can hear laughter. I think that makes it more fun.

• 1:07:53Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:07:54Drew Afualo?

And Caleb's show is like that, too, which I was like, I think it adds to the ambiance of it. I think that's fun. But before there would be no laughing at all, like no noise. And I would have to tell like comedy creators or comics or whatever, like I would say, like, it's going to feel like none of your jokes are hitting because no one's going to laugh.

• 1:08:10Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:08:10Drew Afualo?

But just keep your eyes on me. I'll laugh the whole time, like no matter what. I'll laugh honestly and earnestly. And they're like, okay, because and then it would kind of make them nervous because it was like, because it's so quiet and they're not used to like, you know, sets like that where everyone has to be quiet and do it. But I'm like you, like I had a meeting with like TV movie people, whatever, last week, and they were like, oh, do you have any like preferences in terms of like where you're leaning towards comedy, drama, whatever, romance? And I go, my energy right now is who want me?

• 1:08:40Speaker 01

  Who want me?

• 1:08:41Drew Afualo?

That's kind of my energy. Which one do you want me?

• 1:08:43Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:08:43Drew Afualo?

  What do you need?

• 1:08:44Speaker 01

There you go. Yeah, you have to be open to different opportunities.

• 1:08:48Drew Afualo?

  Oh, absolutely.

• 1:08:48Speaker 01

I've done a lot of stuff over the years for free and a lot of, you know, like, yeah, you just you do you do the thing. And I and a lot of people get very short sighted about that.

• 1:08:58Drew Afualo?

  Right. I agree.

• 1:08:59Speaker 01

I mean, like now, I don't have To do that as much thankfully. But I spent many years doing it. My friends who wouldn't, I I would just say, you know, you don't know opportunity will come from that and like. Who will, you know, who you'll meet or. Uh, you have to be open to to just doing, to working, doing things. It's not about the money at first.

• 1:09:20Drew Afualo?

I agree. And it's like the, it defeats the purpose of art too. Like the goal is to be famous and make money.

• 1:09:25Speaker 01

Yeah. So it's like for years I just said yes. Until I could finally say no.

• 1:09:33Speaker 01

Now I say no a lot.

• 1:09:36Speaker 01

But I said yes for many, many years.

• 1:09:38Drew Afualo?

Yeah. And I, and I'm so with you because I, I really do believe like I, I have a very long term vision for like, so. I do a lot of things. I've done a lot of carpet stuff for free, like because I knew it would be a really good look for me. But just to kind of wrap us, right? I'd love to know if you have any like. Advice for like upcoming artists. I can't even just call you a stand up or an actor because you're a jack of all trades. But if you have any advice for any upcoming artists, maybe want to get into the industry.

• 1:10:06Speaker 01

Um, I mean, I guess it, it would depend on what field. If, if it's a stand up. I, well, I would recommend improv classes to anyone, actually. It doesn't matter.

• 1:10:16Drew Afualo?

  I love that though.

• 1:10:17Speaker 01

Doesn't matter if you're whatever, uh, even I, when I started, it was, I had like a lawyer in there, a secretary, like.

• 1:10:25Drew Afualo?

  That's fun though.

• 1:10:28Speaker 01

Yeah. I was like, what are those things called? Um, because people just wanted to be more comfortable talking.

• 1:10:32Drew Afualo?

  Totally.

• 1:10:33Speaker 01

Uh, so in, if you're an actor or stand up, I, I would do it. To just get out of your own way, to get the ego out of it and be silly, you know? Uh, so I always recommend that. Groundlings is a great place because it's very silly, but also UCB. Um, if you're a stand up, you, there's no path other than you just have to do it. Like you can't wait. You just have to get on stage. You have to write. And you won't know if you're good until you try it. And then once you start it, if you like it. Uh, it just requires you doing it a lot.

• 1:11:10Speaker 01

Tons of reps. Yeah, I'm only, uh, as comfortable as I am because I've done it a bazillion times. Um, so, and, and stand up is one of those, um, mediums where there's, it's a great equalizer. Like, the biggest comics still have to go back to the club. You know, Jerry Seinfeld's a billionaire and he's probably at a comedy club tonight in New York. Kevin Hart has to go to the comedy club. Like, you have to work material out.

• 1:11:38Drew Afualo?

And they workshop new sets and stuff.

• 1:11:40Speaker 01

All the time, yeah. Yeah, so if they can go to the comedy club, you can.

• 1:11:48Speaker 01

So you just have to remember that. It's just, stand up's just gonna require more of an everyday or every week effort than like acting. Acting, your fate is in more of the hands of other people. That's why I do like stand up is because when things weren't happening for me, stand up is what got my career going. I was so tired of waiting around for someone to be like, you can do this. You can be in my project. Whereas stand up, I go get a spot tonight, you know? So keep that in mind, uh, if you're wanting to be a performer. Um, and if you're wanted to be in acting, yeah, classes and. Like you said, the networking is so important at meeting.

• 1:12:31Speaker 01

Cause in classes, you'll meet people who are like, oh, I'm, I'm gonna do this short film. Do you wanna be in it? And that stuff.

• 1:12:36Drew Afualo?

  Gets practice and all that.

• 1:12:38Speaker 01

  Practice and meeting more people.

• 1:12:41Speaker 01

Basically, you just have to do something.

• 1:12:45Speaker 01

It's like, you have to do something. If you're paralyzed with fear, waiting for someone to pick you, it will not happen.

• 1:12:53Drew Afualo?

That's so true. Especially if you're not a straight cis.

• 1:13:00Speaker 01

  Land in your lap.

• 1:13:02Drew Afualo?

  No, not at all.

• 1:13:02Speaker 01

So my, all I can offer is that whatever that field is you're wanting to do, just do it. Uh, and, and obviously we live in a time where social media is very popular.

• 1:13:13Drew Afualo?

  It's a huge tool now.

• 1:13:14Speaker 01

And that's a giant tool that you can start cultivating your own fanbase before you even step on stage. You know, there's a lot of people now who have a fanbase and who've never done standup. They could go sell out a theater tomorrow. That's just the, and that's good for them.

• 1:13:30Drew Afualo?

And I've seen a lot of them.

• 1:13:31Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:13:32Drew Afualo?

And they love to post crowd work.

• 1:13:33Speaker 01

  And also.

• 1:13:34Drew Afualo?

  And no other material.

• 1:13:34Speaker 01

  But you know.

• 1:13:35Drew Afualo?

  How does that work?

• 1:13:36Speaker 01

I don't know, but people are, people are buying the tickets, so. Uh, so yeah, there are different, there, there are lots of opportunities now to, um, do it. Not necessarily get famous.

• 1:13:49Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:50Speaker 01

But if you wanna do it, you can do it.

• 1:13:52Drew Afualo?

  That's so true.

• 1:13:53Speaker 01

Get a podcast, Mike. You can video yourself and put it on social media.

• 1:13:57Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 1:13:58Speaker 01

Whether or not people watch it or listen.

• 1:14:00Drew Afualo?

I can't control that, yeah. I, I said once to someone, cause sometimes they'll ask me like, oh, how do I start a podcast? How do I start this? How do I do that? Um, I've told them like with podcasting especially, or any sort of long form. And you wanna be like funny or a personality or whatever. I've told them, don't even worry about equipment. Don't worry about lighting. Don't worry about cameras. Don't worry about anything. Put your phone up.

• 1:14:21Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:14:22Drew Afualo?

Start it and talk for forty-five minutes. See if you can do it.

• 1:14:25Speaker 01

  Yeah, I know. It's hard.

• 1:14:26Drew Afualo?

Not many people can. That's why I said like.

• 1:14:28Speaker 01

  Very hard.

• 1:14:28Drew Afualo?

You'd find it like I, cause I think sometimes when people think like, oh, I wanna do podcasts or I wanna be a standup or whatever.

• 1:14:34Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:14:35Drew Afualo?

I think a lot of times they think, especially if you're talking podcasting, they think like, I wanna be the person who gets to sit and be asked questions.

• 1:14:42Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:14:42Drew Afualo?

As opposed to someone who's driving the boat. You know what I'm saying? Like someone has to drive the ship.

• 1:14:46Speaker 01

  Someone does.

• 1:14:47Drew Afualo?

Yeah. So I was like, just see if you can talk. See if you can ramble. I can talk for so long. I could talk for ninety minutes about a sandwich.

• 1:14:54Speaker 01

That's what makes you be able to do this so well, successfully. Cause you do, you have to be able to talk. You have to, you have to know your own skillset.

• 1:15:01Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 1:15:02Speaker 01

And also, the people, you just have to also be yourself.

• 1:15:06Drew Afualo?

  I agree.

• 1:15:06Speaker 01

Figuring out who you are. I mean, that's a bigger life thing.

• 1:15:09Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:10Speaker 01

  But if you were.

• 1:15:10Drew Afualo?

  It's essential to it though.

• 1:15:11Speaker 01

If you know who you are, that is a big help too.

• 1:15:14Drew Afualo?

  That's true.

• 1:15:15Speaker 01

Cause I tell comics all the time, I'm like, who you are on stage is not who I'm talking to in life.

• 1:15:20Drew Afualo?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:15:20Speaker 01

And then it's a big disconnect there.

• 1:15:22Drew Afualo?

  See.

• 1:15:23Speaker 01

And that means the audience knows something's amiss.

• 1:15:26Drew Afualo?

Yeah, that's so true. They, they're a lot smarter than sometimes I think people give them credit for.

• 1:15:30Speaker 01

And so I'll see some of these comics that are so funny, just like pretend to be something else.

• 1:15:35Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:35Speaker 01

And I'm like, now we're on to you. We're on to you. I know it, cause I know you, but they're on to you.

• 1:15:40Drew Afualo?

And, and you can feel it too, like that disconnect that you're talking about.

• 1:15:44Speaker 01

When you see someone get up on stage and you're like, oh, that is, like a Caleb, that is who he is.

• 1:15:49Drew Afualo?

  Chris Fleming.

• 1:15:50Speaker 01

You're like, that is who you are.

• 1:15:51Drew Afualo?

  That can't be anybody else.

• 1:15:52Speaker 01

  And that resonates with people.

• 1:15:53Drew Afualo?

  Totally.

• 1:15:54Speaker 01

So, I, anytime you're trying to be somebody else, it's not, it's just not going, you might get to a certain place. Cause you learned A plus B equals C. Sure, you learned the, the formula. But what's really gonna resonate with people is if you're sharing who you are and they, and they grab on to it.

• 1:16:16Drew Afualo?

Totally, especially, uh, ripping off other people's bits too, like, what works for some people may not, doesn't need to work for you. I probably shouldn't because everybody is so uniquely themselves. I know some of my comic friends too have told me that's been their one beef with social media and standup. The world's kind of colliding is feeling like, uh, it's easier to steal jokes, right? Cause people can record and stuff and, uh, rip off material. And like, the internet doesn't have the capacity to like source, right? So like, so one person could tell a joke, it doesn't do that well, but then someone else could see it, do it on theirs and it takes off. And then that person gets credit for the joke as opposed to the other.

• 1:16:54Speaker 01

Well, and it's just, there, there's so many parallel thoughts too. You, you, you can tell a joke and you're like, oh, so and so told that forty years ago. You're like, what? You know what I mean? Like, or, or, or the id- the similar idea.

• 1:17:09Speaker 01

Many people are gonna have a, some, you know.

• 1:17:12Drew Afualo?

  I know what you mean.

• 1:17:13Speaker 01

You know, like, oh, playground equipment is dangerous. You know, like, that, it's a theme everyone's gonna. Think, but you're gonna have your own take on it.

• 1:17:21Drew Afualo?

  I agree.

• 1:17:22Speaker 01

But it's like, you can't claim a theme. And so that's.

• 1:17:26Drew Afualo?

  I agree.

• 1:17:26Speaker 01

Something that people have to keep in mind as well, but if it's like a verbatim thing, then yeah.

• 1:17:31Drew Afualo?

Yeah, or it's like so specific to your life that you're like, you took that shit from me. Like, that's mine.

• 1:17:36Speaker 01

Yeah, like if someone said they came out watching a Lifetime movie, and you're like, wait.

• 1:17:40Drew Afualo?

Well, don't watch my next standup special then. I may have squirreled that one away for me.

• 1:17:44Speaker 01

And they're like, and it was The Truth About Jane. You're like, come on.

• 1:17:49Drew Afualo?

You didn't even know that movie.

• 1:17:52Drew Afualo?

Well, thank you so much for coming on the show.

• 1:17:53Speaker 01

  Thanks for having me.

• 1:17:54Drew Afualo?

I think you're so fucking awesome.

• 1:17:55Speaker 01

Oh, you too. This was a treat.

• 1:17:57Drew Afualo?

It was truly so awesome to get to know you a little bit better.

• 1:17:59Speaker 01

  Oh, I loved it.

• 1:18:00Drew Afualo?

And I really do think you are so talented and I can't wait to see what you keep making.

• 1:18:04Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:18:05Drew Afualo?

Like, you're a jack of all trades for real.

• 1:18:07Speaker 01

  That's what friends are for.

• 1:18:11Drew Afualo?
