What's with this band, anyway? I don't get it, can you please explain? Wait, like, Bandplain? Never heard this band in my life. Oh, you haven't? I'd love that. Really? Why? Yeah, I love this song. Oh, I don't know that one. Bandplain, Bandplain, Bandplain. I really hate this band! Whatever, I'm their biggest fan. Bandplain, Bandplain, Bandplain, Bandplain. Bandplain!

• 1:48Yasi Salek?

Hello, guvna, and welcome to Bandplain. I am your host, Yasi Salek. This is a show usually where I invite an expert guest on to help me explain a cult band or iconic artist. But today, you guys, today is the episode you all love and wait for. It is the listener mailbag, the British season listener mailbag. And just also to clarify, it's not that the season is over and that's why we're doing this. In the spirit of full transparency, because we're friends, I feel you guys are my friends. I had to take a few weeks off as the house burned down. But I'm back and we had to buy some time. And now I've brought a very special guest. He is from England. We imported him right over.

• 2:33Yasi Salek?

Actually, he lives here, but please welcome to the, to the program, to the listener mailbag, Matt Helders.

• 2:38Speaker 04

Thank you. Thank you for having me back. I will say, when you first introduced this segment, you say, we usually have an expert. I thought then you were going to be like.

• 2:47Yasi Salek?

But today we just have some guy. Yeah, yeah.

• 2:49Speaker 04

And that might be like an insecurity of mine that I took it that way, but I know it's not what you meant.

• 2:53Yasi Salek?

I do feel that in the sense of having a British mailbag, you are as expert as I'm gonna get.

• 2:59Speaker 04

I'm the most qualified for that.

• 3:00Yasi Salek?

  You were born there.

• 3:02Speaker 04

  Mm hmm.

• 3:02Yasi Salek?

You lived there for many years.

• 3:04Speaker 04

  Received mail there.

• 3:05Yasi Salek?

You received mail there. You have, I believe, a passport.

• 3:07Speaker 04

  Yeah, still got that.

• 3:09Yasi Salek?

  Brexit notwithstanding.

• 3:11Speaker 04

I mean, you don't do much for me anymore.

• 3:13Yasi Salek?

  But you have the, yeah.

• 3:14Speaker 04

  One day.

• 3:14Yasi Salek?

  You, you support the monarchy.

• 3:19Yasi Salek?

You have, I've been to your home. There's a framed picture of Queen Elizabeth.

• 3:23Speaker 04

Yeah, I've got all the tea sets, tea trays, everything, every wedding, every royal wedding.

• 3:27Yasi Salek?

  Yeah, so.

• 3:28Speaker 04

  Memorabilia.

• 3:28Yasi Salek?

Couldn't be more, couldn't be more chuffed.

• 3:30Speaker 04

  No, good, yeah.

• 3:31Yasi Salek?

To have you, to be honest. Would you like to read the first question?

• 3:34Speaker 04

So am I looking at the right thing? Yeah.

• 3:36Yasi Salek?

You don't have to read her email address out loud or anything.

• 3:39Speaker 04

It is from, it docks this girl. From Olivia. She says, hi, I see, and guest, just me. My question is, if you could be in any Britpop band, which one would you choose? I think I just have to go Oasis.

• 3:52Yasi Salek?

You just went straight. It was like not even, it was not even a question.

• 3:56Speaker 04

Let me think about this. The reason I say that is because when I was a kid, I wanted to be in Oasis. And obviously, maybe it changes through life as you listen to more and more different Britpop. And I'd be in Pulp, I'd be, you know, there's a few that I'd be in.

• 4:08Yasi Salek?

  Right.

• 4:09Speaker 04

But, and not as a drummer, which is what I do.

• 4:11Yasi Salek?

  Oh, you would.

• 4:12Speaker 04

  It's my day job.

• 4:13Yasi Salek?

  So.

• 4:13Speaker 04

  I'd be Liam Gallagher.

• 4:14Yasi Salek?

  Of course.

• 4:15Speaker 04

  Is what I'd wanna be.

• 4:16Yasi Salek?

Love and respect to Noel, but I think we would all be.

• 4:18Speaker 04

Yeah, and it's not, yeah, nothing against Noel. I think when I was at, at school, we, we once, I'm talking like primary school, which is elementary school for you Americans.

• 4:27Yasi Salek?

  For the translation.

• 4:28Speaker 04

I, we pretended to be Oasis, just like lip synced.

• 4:32Yasi Salek?

  And like a talent show?

• 4:33Speaker 04

Like at school, yeah. We did Spice Girls too, and we like, basically in drag at like nine years old, ten years old. And I had a, I didn't have a guitar because I wasn't Noel, but the guitar, the kid who was doing guitar just had a tennis racket.

• 4:44Yasi Salek?

  Sure.

• 4:44Speaker 04

But we dressed up, I had like a

• 4:46Yasi Salek?

  You had a wig?

• 4:47Speaker 04

On sunglasses, and I like stared at the kid that I didn't like in like a sort of threatening way that Liam would while there's a guitar.

• 4:53Yasi Salek?

  You did it.

• 4:54Speaker 04

I like got on my knees and like stared at him.

• 4:57Yasi Salek?

  What song was, was?

• 4:58Speaker 04

I don't remember. It would have been like something off first album around that time, probably. I really like feeling myself, obviously, like the, the attitude was there. So I think, and then I used to go home after school and watch live from, uh, live from Main Road, VHS every day. So I think it'd have to be Oasis for me.

• 5:15Yasi Salek?

You were truly radicalized by Oasis.

• 5:17Speaker 04

But I, I didn't see it as a, uh, attainable job.

• 5:21Yasi Salek?

  Sure.

• 5:21Speaker 04

Well, I mean, obviously they were Oasis and they're playing in stadiums, but even that as a thing, I just thought it's something that like, you like, you got manufactured into doing.

• 5:29Yasi Salek?

But you had such a rich cultural history in Sheffield with Human League.

• 5:35Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 5:36Yasi Salek?

  Def Leppard?

• 5:37Speaker 04

Def Leppard. Yeah, that's the big one.

• 5:40Yasi Salek?

Yeah. But yeah, I guess that seemed pretty manufactured.

• 5:42Speaker 04

I think, yeah, but I also don't think, yeah, that seemed just like American as well.

• 5:47Yasi Salek?

And Pulp had a hit, hit, yeah. I mean, they're obviously

• 5:49Speaker 04

I don't even think everyone, I don't think people my age had the access to know where everyone was from anyway.

• 5:56Yasi Salek?

  Oh, sure.

• 5:57Speaker 04

Like saw them on TV, so they're just there now. They're from TV.

• 6:00Yasi Salek?

  Sheffield's finest.

• 6:01Speaker 04

No, you wouldn't see them around really, like not where we lived anyway.

• 6:04Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 6:04Speaker 04

But like, in the nice bit, they might have been there, but like, no, I didn't know, I didn't know where anyone was from.

• 6:10Yasi Salek?

  Okay.

• 6:11Speaker 04

They've appeared on my TV, so it's like unattainable.

• 6:13Yasi Salek?

Yeah, but then look what happened.

• 6:15Speaker 04

  Attained. Consider it attained.

• 6:18Yasi Salek?

Have a dream, babe. Okay. And just know that you're watching this, that you could one day also be a mid-tier music podcaster

• 6:24Speaker 04

  That's true.

• 6:25Yasi Salek?

in your early forties. This one was really hard for me, I gotta say.

• 6:29Speaker 04

  Mm-hmm.

• 6:29Yasi Salek?

Because my first instinct was Elastica.

• 6:33Speaker 04

  Hmm.

• 6:33Yasi Salek?

But then I realized it's because I just want to be Justine Freshman. It's, and Elastica's great.

• 6:37Speaker 04

Yeah, my answer is similar to that, really. Yeah. It's, I mean, it's Oasis, it's fine, but yeah.

• 6:43Yasi Salek?

I, I thought Oasis next, then I was like, besides Liam, they really seemed they had a real Les Mis time most of the journey. And I was like, unless you're Liam, it probably wasn't super fun.

• 6:53Speaker 04

  Yeah, no, probably not.

• 6:55Yasi Salek?

Um, and so I'm gonna cheat because this is my show.

• 6:57Speaker 04

You can do what you want.

• 6:58Yasi Salek?

And I'm Opening it up past Britpop and I would have been in the Happy Mondays.

• 7:03Speaker 04

  Oh, yeah, yeah.

• 7:04Yasi Salek?

Cause that seems fucking fun, man. They did so much fun drugs.

• 7:09Speaker 04

Yeah, that probably, you're probably right.

• 7:10Yasi Salek?

They didn't really care if they were good at it. That part, they looked cool as hell.

• 7:14Speaker 04

  Yeah, that's true.

• 7:15Yasi Salek?

They set trends. Kendrick, babe? Happy Mondays walk, so Kendrick could run on that stage in those flares is what I'm saying. He was, it was giving fucking hacienda.

• 7:25Speaker 04

That's true. Yeah, that was, yeah, that silhouette that he left was definitely in the shape of a Happy Monday.

• 7:30Yasi Salek?

He went to Phil Sacks's stall in, uh, in Manchester that he bought from the Iranians. All right, I'll read the next question. We can tag team. Is there a word for tag team?

• 7:41Speaker 04

I think it's the same and I think it's only because wrestling was just, you know, such a big thing for us too.

• 7:46Yasi Salek?

  That's a worldwide sport.

• 7:48Speaker 04

  That's worldwide.

• 7:48Yasi Salek?

Yeah. This is from Annie Dudley. She says, hi, Yasi, my skincare queen.

• 7:54Speaker 04

  I hope it's a skincare question.

• 7:55Yasi Salek?

Hi, Matt, my skincare king. She didn't put that, but she didn't know.

• 7:58Speaker 04

  She didn't know yet.

• 8:00Yasi Salek?

When in your opinion is an appropriate age to start investing in skincare products? What products are worth your while? What are the biggest scams? And then, yeah, I'm gonna read the nice little postscript that she wrote.

• 8:12Speaker 04

Lucky that you read this one, I know.

• 8:13Yasi Salek?

Right. You would have skipped it. You would have been like, this part's not important. Your pod has changed how I engage with music and guided me towards some of my now favorite artists. Shout out Bobby Smith. That's Robert Smith from The Cure for The Uneducated. Thank you for being a force of good taste. She said I'm a force of good taste, bitch. And healthy influence in my impressionable life. I'm gonna say, and not to other, the rest of my beautiful fans and listeners, but this is my new favorite kind of fan and listener, which is a young woman. They're popping up left and right and I'm living.

• 8:45Speaker 04

You can also see what she's up to as well, like on her email signature.

• 8:49Yasi Salek?

Well, I'm not, again, I'm not really an adoptive.

• 8:50Speaker 04

I just like it for us.

• 8:51Yasi Salek?

She's in, she's getting her education and she's graduating this year, which puts her at like 22, right?

• 8:58Speaker 04

  She's right. She is impressionable.

• 9:00Yasi Salek?

Yeah. Thank you for asking this question as I have a deep and abiding love and interest and passion for this topic. You need to start now. Okay. I don't want to put the fear of God into you, but it's never too early to start taking good care of your skin. Unless you're like 10 years old and you're buying drunk elephant at Sephora, that's not necessary. Don't do that. Love and respect. Those products don't even work. And you're 10, your skin is literally a baby's.

• 9:25Speaker 04

That's all they're trying to get to, huh? Trying to get to that, what they've already got.

• 9:29Yasi Salek?

These kids have like skincare fridges.

• 9:31Speaker 04

Yeah, I know. I know one.

• 9:34Yasi Salek?

  Bet you do.

• 9:36Yasi Salek?

Here are my top line tips. Number one, cleanser does not need to be fancy or expensive at all. Just get a good, nice one that cleans your face, doesn't irritate you, doesn't strip. Everyone's different. Cetaphil is a gorgeous starting point. If you really want to upgrade, you can get like a $20 one, like a Korean skincare one. Those are nice too. But you do want a great moisturizer, babe. Okay, moisture is key. Again, doesn't have to mean expensive. I've used all the fucking 300, 400 dollar ones. Please believe, okay? What I like best, what works the best for me, Vanna cream. Get it on, well, I don't want to plug his website, but you know which website I'm talking about.

• 10:18Yasi Salek?

Or at the drugstore, it's I think $14 and a huge pump, makes a little cold pressed castor oil in there. But you gotta try what works for you. Just something nice and moisturizing. The scam is that nothing works the same for every person. So you just have to try a few things out and do not get tricked by viral skincare or everybody on TikTok says this because you're different and you just have to go on your own journey. And you can apply that to the rest of your life as well.

• 10:42Speaker 04

I have a skincare question too.

• 10:44Yasi Salek?

Oh, you, I thought you had an advice. What are you using these days?

• 10:47Speaker 04

I, I don't pay enough attention to, well, no, my, my advice, learning from experience is that I don't pay enough attention to what it's doing to me.

• 10:55Yasi Salek?

  Right.

• 10:56Speaker 04

So I don't spend long enough with the product to know if it's doing anything.

• 10:59Yasi Salek?

Got it. You're not doing one of one research.

• 11:02Speaker 04

No, and as you know, I've got a wife who's really into all of this. So she's like,

• 11:05Yasi Salek?

  She's my queen.

• 11:06Speaker 04

I just do what she tells me to do and what it is. But the one thing I don't know is that I always read in American books or see on American TV. And my, Amanda can answer this either.

• 11:15Yasi Salek?

Look how the tables have turned. Now I can educate you.

• 11:18Speaker 04

What is cold cream? Well, why is it called that? Like what, is it just a generic term for something?

• 11:23Yasi Salek?

Ponds cold cream. Yeah, I'm not really sure that, it's not in fashion anymore.

• 11:27Speaker 04

No, it seemed old. Like the thing I read it in was a bit dead and it was something about her parents telling her to take a makeup off. So it's like, so I just applied, so I applied cold cream to my eyes to remove the eyeliner.

• 11:37Yasi Salek?

You can still buy it, Ponds cold cream. I do.

• 11:39Speaker 04

  Why is it cold?

• 11:40Yasi Salek?

Don't take my complete word on this, but I do believe they used to refrigerate it.

• 11:44Speaker 04

  As simple as that.

• 11:45Yasi Salek?

Yeah, literally, I think it was kept cold.

• 11:47Speaker 04

And I think it's because I think of like, I've got a cold, like, like an illness, like I'm like sick.

• 11:54Yasi Salek?

  Nyquil cream.

• 11:54Speaker 04

It's like cream for when you've got a cold.

• 11:56Yasi Salek?

Cream that you like put up your nose.

• 11:58Speaker 04

Yeah, maybe it's, yeah, like Vicks Vapor Rob.

• 12:00Yasi Salek?

No, it's, it's really just a thick moisturizer. Glad we've two birds, one stone.

• 12:05Speaker 04

Yeah. So Brian wants to know, is Oasis alternative rock? Obviously, they got played on the stations and the genre is more a selling point than a defined genre. Was discussing favorite alternative albums of 1995 and was unsure if Oasis is alternative or just a rock band or both. Thanks for the best fucking show.

• 12:24Yasi Salek?

Um, let me ask you a question, Matt.

• 12:26Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 12:27Yasi Salek?

Did they call it alternative rock in England?

• 12:29Speaker 04

No, and that, my first thought when I, when I read it is that by the time I knew what Oasis was, it was on like the mainstream radio.

• 12:37Yasi Salek?

  Sure.

• 12:38Speaker 04

But also the thing is in England, there is, there's one national radio, there's a radio station that's played everywhere.

• 12:42Yasi Salek?

  Radio one.

• 12:43Speaker 04

BBC Radio One is national radio. So there's, and there is alternative radio stations, but they'd be played on like the local pop one. They'd be like straight after like a fully pop fact.

• 12:54Yasi Salek?

  Sure, sure.

• 12:55Speaker 04

And so I don't know if it was, I don't know if it counted as alternative, because maybe just because it was such a big movement in England that the Brit pop was the popular thing.

• 13:03Yasi Salek?

Did they call anything alternative rock there?

• 13:05Speaker 04

Not, I don't think until later on, like until like MTV and stuff.

• 13:08Yasi Salek?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 13:09Speaker 04

Because then there was, our MTV two was that, was like the alternative.

• 13:12Yasi Salek?

  Right, right.

• 13:13Speaker 04

And, but that was, yeah, that was later on. So I don't think like in radio, it was necessarily a thing.

• 13:17Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 13:18Speaker 04

In my memory, I, you know, I could be wrong.

• 13:20Yasi Salek?

I think you're, I think you're right. Unfortunately for you guys, I couldn't help myself and did a bit of a deep dive here.

• 13:25Speaker 04

  Okay, good.

• 13:26Yasi Salek?

So legend has it that Terry Tolkien, who at the time was a DJ. coined this phrase, alternative rock in 1979. But he, he's very cool, actually. He is the one that signed the Butthole Surfers. He worked for Touch and Go and Rough Trade, and then he eventually became A and R Electra. And he signed Stereolab.

• 13:48Speaker 04

  Oh, wow.

• 13:48Yasi Salek?

And also brought Afghan Wings, one of my personal favorites, and Luna to the label. Besides that, though, I don't think it caught on. In the eighties, especially the early and mid eighties in America, what we call alternative rock now was called college rock. Now it was like R E M, Pixies and stuff like that. Then, in the mid eighties, they started calling it alternative rock because they had these other terms that was like, postmodern, don't really have the same ring to it.

• 14:15Speaker 04

  Yeah, no.

• 14:15Yasi Salek?

New music. A little vague, I think, a little vague. And then in 1987, Spin Magazine in print called Camper Van Beethoven, great band, alternative slash indie.

• 14:27Speaker 04

  Right, yeah.

• 14:28Yasi Salek?

All this to say, in America, Oasis was lumped in with alternative rock. But even then, by that point, alternate, by 91, alternative rock, 92, alternative rock was mainstream because Nirvana and Pearl Jam. So it was no longer an alternative to.

• 14:44Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 14:45Yasi Salek?

But I think the term stuck.

• 14:47Speaker 04

Yeah, yeah, that makes sense. I had a feeling it'd just be different here because so much other stuff came along with Oasis there. There's like enough of it.

• 14:56Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 14:56Speaker 04

For it to be ma- like mainstream, of course.

• 14:57Yasi Salek?

I also, I'm sure if you asked Oasis, they'd be like, alternative to what, bitch?

• 15:01Speaker 04

  Yeah, I think they would.

• 15:02Yasi Salek?

  We're the Beatles.

• 15:02Speaker 04

  Where this is just rock.

• 15:03Yasi Salek?

Yeah. We, we did not set out to be alternative. We set out to be the next Beatles.

• 15:08Speaker 04

Take it negatively, actually. It's like, alternative, it's like, oh, well, you couldn't get the real thing, so you've got us.

• 15:12Yasi Salek?

Are the Arctic Monkeys alternative rock?

• 15:14Speaker 04

I don't know what we are anymore. I just, yeah, I mean, I'd say we're the same. I suppose we like to consider it rock and roll. It's all rock and roll.

• 15:20Yasi Salek?

It's all rock and roll to me. Okay, my turn. Hello, this is from Alison McElroy. Big time fan of Yasi. Oh my god, thank you. I heard you on the Big Picture Podcast. Shout out Sean Fantasy and Amanda Dobbins. And I instantly became a fan. Babe has now entered my regular vernacular. That will be my legacy, unfortunately. I'm gonna put it on my headstone. Question, can you please do an episode on Linkin Park? My husband loves them and I never listen to them. Help a girl out. Love you and stay strong. Thank you, Alison, for the nice email. My response is, have I not been through enough? Just kidding. I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding. Many people love and admire and respect Linkin Park.

• 16:01Yasi Salek?

And it's not off the table. When we eventually get to the new metal season, I think it would be a glaring oversight. Should we not cover Linkin Park?

• 16:12Speaker 04

That'd be quite a long season.

• 16:15Yasi Salek?

Along and winding. Yeah, I need to regain my strength, I think. I need to really pick up the pieces of my broken life before I can get to. Cut my life in two pieces.

• 16:24Speaker 04

The next question is from Stephen. So it just says, Britpop. As a fan of Teenage Fanclub and the rest of the Glasgow scene, I always include their music when I make a Britpop playlist. Would Brits or you think that that is appropriate?

• 16:39Yasi Salek?

  Well, let's ask Brits first.

• 16:41Speaker 04

Yeah, I think it's a sort of, it's a one-way hatred and it's Scottish hate in English people. So we have no, me personally, I've got Scottish family, I've got Scottish friends. I don't think.

• 16:52Yasi Salek?

  You like haggis?

• 16:53Speaker 04

  We, I've tried it.

• 16:55Yasi Salek?

It's actually quite good. Shout out Chloe Walsh made me a delicious haggis on Burns' night and I loved it.

• 17:00Speaker 04

Yeah, I've had it and it's, and it's, yeah, I didn't have a bad experience with it from what I remember. I think the idea of it gets in people's heads, but it tends to be the same with a lot of foods.

• 17:09Yasi Salek?

You're just trying to not to further stoke the flames of Scottish English hatred by not saying that you didn't like it.

• 17:15Speaker 04

As far as I'm concerned, it's one way. Scotland's great. And I think that, I don't think as a Brit, I would say, don't put Scottish bands in that playlist.

• 17:26Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 17:27Speaker 04

I mean, it might not be Britpop. I don't know how strict the rules of that are, but I don't think you, I don't think you're gonna upset any Brits by doing that necessarily.

• 17:35Yasi Salek?

I think genre is fake, as you guys know. I don't think any band calls themselves a Britpop band to begin with. I think you can perhaps just change the playlist to Pan-British or UK and include Teenage Fanclub. Could you include an Irish band like My Bloody Valentine? That's, that's where it gets hairy. It gets squirrely.

• 17:57Speaker 04

  Then you're crossing the sea.

• 18:00Yasi Salek?

  Your

• 18:00Speaker 04

  A bottle of water too.

• 18:01Yasi Salek?

  Your

• 18:01Speaker 04

And all sorts of boundaries maybe.

• 18:03Yasi Salek?

All sorts of boundaries that are not British as I now fully understand. Maybe not fully understand because some of you will remember at the live show, a very nice Irishman came to thank me for my work in trying to explain the Ireland thing. And then I said, yes, I get it now. It's Northern Ireland and regular Ireland. And he was like, it is not regular Ireland. We do not say regular Ireland. And I was like, my deepest apologies to

• 18:28Speaker 04

  It's a confusing thing.

• 18:29Yasi Salek?

Republic of Ireland, which is not regular Ireland. I hope that answered your question. I don't think it did. Make whatever playlist you like.

• 18:36Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 18:36Yasi Salek?

The Britpop Police are not gonna come to your house.

• 18:39Speaker 04

  No.

• 18:40Yasi Salek?

The enemy editor from 1989 is like, excuse me.

• 18:44Speaker 04

I didn't mean this when I coined this term.

• 18:46Yasi Salek?

This question is from Eve Stahlberger. Will you be doing the verve? Although they are not Britpop per se, Richard Ashcroft, a strange but handsome man, has written, the editorialization is wonderful, has written many goddamn gorgeous, beautiful songs. I don't, could never argue with that. I actually wanted to ask you, before I even answer, do you have thoughts on the verve?

• 19:10Speaker 04

I have thoughts on the email, but I'll get to that after.

• 19:12Yasi Salek?

Is it because of the emojis?

• 19:15Speaker 04

No, is the thing at the end on purpose, do you think?

• 19:17Yasi Salek?

  Okay, so the, the

• 19:19Speaker 04

I know this is getting a bit Inside baseball there, but.

• 19:22Yasi Salek?

Inside mailbag. Sent from iPhone, so there may be typos.

• 19:26Speaker 04

But it says, sent from iPhone, so they may be typos.

• 19:29Yasi Salek?

I bet you that is on purpose. It's gotta be on purpose.

• 19:32Speaker 04

  Cause you check that.

• 19:32Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 19:33Speaker 04

So it's like a, see what you did to it kind of thing.

• 19:36Yasi Salek?

  Little winkie.

• 19:36Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 19:37Yasi Salek?

  Good job, Eve.

• 19:38Speaker 04

That's fine. So then back to the question, yeah.

• 19:39Yasi Salek?

Do you have personal thoughts and feelings on the verve?

• 19:42Speaker 04

Love the verve. Yeah. And Richard Ashcroft, we've had like a funny, a couple of funny encounters with him.

• 19:47Yasi Salek?

Is he a very serious man?

• 19:49Speaker 04

  No.

• 19:50Yasi Salek?

Is he a strange but beautiful man?

• 19:51Speaker 04

I would say he's strange but beautiful, yeah. I just remember watching a band with it, I can't remember who it was, like on the side of the stage watching Glastonbury and he was there. And he was just, this is another very English thing, which is obviously topical, but it's one of the snacks you don't have here, but it's called saurine. I don't even know how to describe what it is.

• 20:09Yasi Salek?

Why didn't you tell me? I would have gone there.

• 20:10Speaker 04

I just forgot about it until we mentioned Richard Ashcroft. It's sort of like a fruitcake. Bread thing. It's like small, but it's like a, I suppose like fruitcake. You don't have that idea.

• 20:19Yasi Salek?

A fruitcake? Yeah, people give it to you at Christmas and you're like, thanks a lot.

• 20:22Speaker 04

  It lasts forever.

• 20:23Yasi Salek?

And you copy it in the bin and you're like, why does, what is this made of that it does not ever go bad? It's March and it's insulting.

• 20:29Speaker 04

Parents and grandparents would make us eat this. And I'd just eat the frosting and not eat the middle.

• 20:33Yasi Salek?

  Oh, it has frosting?

• 20:34Speaker 04

Sometimes like a Christmas cake might have a snow effect.

• 20:36Yasi Salek?

  Okay, sure, okay.

• 20:38Speaker 04

  And it'd just be white.

• 20:38Yasi Salek?

  Is it holiday specific?

• 20:40Speaker 04

It's usually at Christmas, but sometimes wedding cakes are that inside too.

• 20:43Yasi Salek?

  Okay.

• 20:43Speaker 04

Because it lasts a long time, I think.

• 20:45Yasi Salek?

  This is Glastonbury.

• 20:47Speaker 04

Yeah, well, there's also a product that you'd get in a thing like a Jaffa cake.

• 20:50Yasi Salek?

  Okay.

• 20:50Speaker 04

And it'd be just a small version of like a loaf, but it's like fruity and cakey.

• 20:55Yasi Salek?

  Okay.

• 20:55Speaker 04

If people like, you'd slice it up, sometimes you'd heat it up and put just butter on it and it'd be like salty and sweet.

• 21:00Yasi Salek?

  Sounds pretty good.

• 21:00Speaker 04

It was, it is good. It's just a weird thing to describe. And we used to have it as kids. And he had just one in his hand and he was just eating it.

• 21:07Yasi Salek?

  Like the full loaf?

• 21:08Speaker 04

Yeah. And it's like, I mean, it's small enough to be a handheld, but you wouldn't want to eat a full loaf. I think he had a, I think he was cutting it up and eating it.

• 21:15Yasi Salek?

Like an apple, just like, like saying and then?

• 21:17Speaker 04

Yeah. It's like prisoners eat apples. Watching somebody on the side of the stage at Glastonbury, I can't remember.

• 21:22Yasi Salek?

  That's a deeply specific anecdote.

• 21:24Speaker 04

You know, in line with the strange and beautiful.

• 21:26Yasi Salek?

Sure. Definitely strange. And kind of beautiful to be eating a full cake.

• 21:30Speaker 04

Yeah, yeah. Like, good for you. He's already done his show. He's feeling good about it and he's just celebrating with a cake.

• 21:36Yasi Salek?

He can carb load now. I'm gonna give you a hard maybe. I quite like the Verve. Obviously topical at the moment as Richard Ashcroft has been tapped to open for Oasis.

• 21:47Speaker 04

Yeah. Which I'm sure he'll be expected to play a lot of Verve songs too.

• 21:51Yasi Salek?

If he doesn't play bittersweet, some funny people are gonna be cobbing beer at the lager, cobbing lager at his strange and beautiful forum on the stage. Maybe he won't though. Maybe he'll just be like, I don't give a fuck about you guys. I'm tired. Hate this song. Sue the shit out of me.

• 22:10Yasi Salek?

  All right, what's next?

• 22:11Speaker 04

Hello, Yasi and Rob. First of all, I'm not Rob.

• 22:15Yasi Salek?

Yeah, I'm really sorry, you guys. I know people. I never said it was gonna be Rob and some of you did make an ass out of you and me by making an assumption, as my dad always used to say, is what happens when you assume.

• 22:26Speaker 04

But I reckon that if this person had have got it right, they'd be pretty happy with themselves, wouldn't they?

• 22:30Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 22:30Speaker 04

That's probably the risk they're willing to take. I admire you both greatly.

• 22:34Yasi Salek?

  Well.

• 22:34Speaker 04

Thank you. I am forty-eight now and unfortunately have taken my hearing seriously way too late in life.

• 22:41Yasi Salek?

Yeah, waited too long to take the hearing seriously.

• 22:43Speaker 04

So, sorry, yeah, wow, I really read that wrong. After all the years of shows and music listening, do you guys have tinnitus or any hearing impairment? What do you do to take care of your hearing, if anything at all?

• 22:54Yasi Salek?

This made me, yeah, this made me laugh because I was like, oh, we need to get Matt to really answer because for you, you're probably deaf.

• 23:00Speaker 04

And well, no, I've got a good, fairly funny story around this because early on, people told me to get earplugs, like good ones.

• 23:08Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 23:09Speaker 04

Ones we could afford, stuff like that. They were like, you should do it straight away. The ones that have got like the filters in and they were like, you'll sound better, like drums sound better through them. So playing drums obviously is one of those things where you're gonna like mess it up.

• 23:20Yasi Salek?

Is that the loudest place to be?

• 23:24Speaker 04

I mean, sometimes guitar amps are just stupid loud in front, but not where I am, though. I was just this, it's like the high pitched of like the cymbals and everything and that's nah. And as I got better and the wanted to like hit them harder and stuff, it was like got worse. But, and also just like practicing in shit, like practice rooms, it just sounds terrible. So I got them as soon as I could. And the guy who did, there's like one guy in Sheffield who like fitted you for him, like you have this weird mould in your ear, like with what, like to get a perfect mould in your ear and all that. And then he did it for like all the like racing car drivers and stuff like the Formula One. He was like the guy who did all that. So I was like excited to go there.

• 24:01Yasi Salek?

Are there a lot of Formula One drivers from Sheffield?

• 24:02Speaker 04

No, but he just, you know, England's small enough for him to spread his wings. And then I went to his house and he was deaf, first of all, had hearing aids. So I was like, oh, you got into the business, like, I don't know, to better yourself. But I was having an issue like paying him. I was like, um, I think management's gonna pay. I'll get, I'll get him, I'll, I'll call them and they'll pay you to make sure. So while he did the mould, he like gave me the phone. To call them, but I had these big things in my ears. And I was, you must know how this works. You do it every day. And you deaf yourself. And I was like, I was, I'll have to wait until after. And he was, he was like so confused. He was an older guy. He was so confused by it. So anyway, that's whatever, but yes.

• 24:43Yasi Salek?

  But you got that.

• 24:44Speaker 04

My ears are great now because of that. Cause his point was he was like, do you want to hear your grandchildren speak? I was like, well, for the dark way.

• 24:49Yasi Salek?

Thank God someone told you that.

• 24:51Speaker 04

I know. And I know plenty of people who do have this though, and there's constant ringing in their ears.

• 24:55Yasi Salek?

I did too. I envelope very many musician friends who are like.

• 24:57Speaker 04

Davey, my drum tech is like always hearing it. Yeah. And he just tries to describe it and I'm like, I don't know if I can handle that.

• 25:03Yasi Salek?

  I think I'd go crazy.

• 25:04Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 25:04Yasi Salek?

Yeah. To answer your question, I do not have issues of hearing. I, I've developed more issues of like mental impairment. I think from my years of listening to and being immersed in music, certainly emotional trauma.

• 25:19Speaker 04

  Yeah, that's.

• 25:19Yasi Salek?

From dating within the musician community.

• 25:23Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 25:23Yasi Salek?

But as far as I can tell, knock on manufactured wood, my hearing and eyesight so far, pretty good.

• 25:32Speaker 04

  Eyesight, mine's fucked.

• 25:34Yasi Salek?

  You were blind?

• 25:34Speaker 04

I mean, just always was kinda, I just.

• 25:36Yasi Salek?

You wore glasses as a child?

• 25:38Speaker 04

Yeah, but I didn't is the issue.

• 25:39Yasi Salek?

  Okay, so it gets worse.

• 25:41Speaker 04

So it's just, I, I thought like, oh, maybe if I don't need them, I'll like bring them back up to full strength if I don't rely on them.

• 25:47Yasi Salek?

  Uh huh, yeah.

• 25:48Speaker 04

You don't wanna get used to that crutch.

• 25:49Yasi Salek?

  They've disproven that theory.

• 25:50Speaker 04

Yeah, yeah, no, I still try and hold on to that. But, um, I mean, I don't care now. I just didn't wanna wear glasses at school.

• 25:56Yasi Salek?

Sure. I had to wear headgear though, bitch, so.

• 25:58Speaker 04

Ah, yeah, yeah. That's the very American thing in it. I never even knew that.

• 26:01Yasi Salek?

Yeah, well, we know British people are not really super interested in orthodox history.

• 26:05Speaker 04

  I get why it's important.

• 26:08Yasi Salek?

That's so American of you guys to fix your teeth to make them straight.

• 26:13Yasi Salek?

Okay. This is from Mark. Shout out Mark. We love Mark. He is a artist living in Sweden. He draws us sometimes. Continuing on the movie soundtrack and biopic, choose an artist or band you would like to see a movie about. Then choose an artist or band that would record an entire accompanying soundtrack, doing their own versions of the first artist. Example, a crisscross biopic with city girls interpreting their songs on the soundtrack CD. Also, is there a role in the movie for a Swedish guy with face tattoos? Mark does have a lot of face tattoos.

• 26:47Speaker 04

Well, he's, he's linked to his Instagram, which I'm tempted to click on to see. I think that. Based on his concept, a girl band playing a boy band might be a good way to go.

• 26:56Yasi Salek?

That's kind of what I was thinking. I was thinking like.

• 26:58Speaker 04

  Who does the Spice Girls?

• 26:59Yasi Salek?

  The Ramones.

• 27:02Speaker 04

One Direction playing the Spice Girls is what I mean.

• 27:03Yasi Salek?

  But we're short one now.

• 27:04Speaker 04

  Oh shit, yeah.

• 27:05Yasi Salek?

Yeah, you bring that up right now.

• 27:06Speaker 04

  That's too fresh as well.

• 27:07Yasi Salek?

  Yeah, too fresh.

• 27:08Speaker 04

  Um, so yeah, Ramones.

• 27:11Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 27:11Speaker 04

Played by, like, who is the now, though?

• 27:15Yasi Salek?

  Mannequin pussy.

• 27:16Speaker 04

  Yeah, I was gonna say.

• 27:17Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 27:17Speaker 04

I mean, cause also you could put, I mean, obviously it could be, it might not have to be like band for band. It could be like various female artists put together to play the Ramones.

• 27:25Yasi Salek?

I don't like when they do that.

• 27:27Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 27:27Yasi Salek?

Do you know what I mean?

• 27:28Speaker 04

Remember when, uh, in the, like, Motley Crue one, when Machine Gun Kelly?

• 27:32Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 27:32Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 27:33Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 27:34Speaker 04

  That was tough.

• 27:34Yasi Salek?

Yeah, that was so rough. I don't like when they just are like, look, girls. It's like ghettoizing.

• 27:42Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah.

• 27:42Yasi Salek?

What if there was an Arctic Monkeys movie? Who would, what, who would you cast? You know what would be fun is children.

• 27:49Speaker 04

Yeah. Yeah, I mean, yeah, it would be slightly different to his question, cause I can't think of like, like, I don't know, there's like, who's a, who's a new band?

• 28:00Yasi Salek?

Truly like, off top for us, we're like, who is a new artist?

• 28:06Speaker 04

I don't know. I like, I just, again, his example's great. It was like.

• 28:09Yasi Salek?

Maybe we, maybe I would redo the Leonard Cohen, not redo, I don't think there is one yet. I would do Leonard Cohen biopic with my beloved Cameron Winter.

• 28:18Speaker 04

  Mm-hmm.

• 28:19Yasi Salek?

Have I forced you to listen to Cameron Winter yet?

• 28:20Speaker 04

  No.

• 28:21Yasi Salek?

  It's so good.

• 28:21Speaker 04

  You've definitely mentioned it.

• 28:22Yasi Salek?

Yeah, we'll, we'll put it on at the house later. You're gonna love it.

• 28:25Speaker 04

I mean, this is also, cause musicians have played other musicians, obviously.

• 28:30Yasi Salek?

  Not usually well.

• 28:31Speaker 04

  Like the, no, exactly.

• 28:32Yasi Salek?

Yeah. There are some good examples, I guess.

• 28:35Speaker 04

Jack White could play somebody. He like played Elvis in like one of the films, didn't he? Like in, uh.

• 28:39Yasi Salek?

  He did?

• 28:40Speaker 04

In the spoof version of the, of The Line.

• 28:43Yasi Salek?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 28:44Speaker 04

Walk Hard. Is that right? Did he do that? Yeah.

• 28:47Yasi Salek?

Did you watch the Bob Dylan movie?

• 28:48Speaker 04

No, I ain't watched it yet. I, I heard good things though.

• 28:52Yasi Salek?

Are you a big Bob Dylan fan?

• 28:53Speaker 04

  Not particularly.

• 28:54Yasi Salek?

You're gonna be a Timothy Chalamet fan?

• 28:56Speaker 04

More, maybe more so. Uh, no, I like Bob Dylan. I just don't, I didn't, I, I, I hate to, uh, brag here, but I did get invited to the premiere and just couldn't go. That would have been my opportunity.

• 29:09Yasi Salek?

Could have given me a call.

• 29:10Speaker 04

See it. Yeah, I should have actually.

• 29:11Yasi Salek?

I could have been like, I'm Matt Helders. You haven't seen Better Man?

• 29:15Speaker 04

  What's that one?

• 29:15Yasi Salek?

  The Robbie Williams movie.

• 29:18Speaker 04

Oh, there you go. Monkey played him.

• 29:19Yasi Salek?

  It's fantastic.

• 29:20Speaker 04

  Uh, is it good?

• 29:21Yasi Salek?

  It's fantastic.

• 29:21Speaker 04

I got invited to that premiere too. Look at me.

• 29:23Yasi Salek?

  Matt.

• 29:23Speaker 04

Out of the limelight, but still getting the invite.

• 29:25Yasi Salek?

What kind of friend are you here, honestly?

• 29:27Speaker 04

Yeah, I did. I think the point is I couldn't beat his answer.

• 29:29Yasi Salek?

Yeah, you did a really good job, Mark. And I think we we got some good ones in there.

• 29:33Speaker 04

Mm hmm. Blair McCarthy. Hey, Yasi. As a New Zealander, I have enjoyed your random asides of not being too hot on Australia. Much respect. They are all right in parentheses. Or I would say in brackets. I just really went with the Americans on that one.

• 29:48Yasi Salek?

Oh, brackets is what you guys say. We have, we call brackets another thing, the square ones. What do you call those? Also brackets?

• 29:54Speaker 04

I didn't go to school for long enough because in England you don't, you leave when you're 16.

• 29:57Yasi Salek?

  So they had.

• 29:58Speaker 04

  Another English thing.

• 29:59Yasi Salek?

They only had taught you parentheses, brackets as a senior level.

• 30:02Speaker 04

Yeah, like the second shift on your keyboard. We only got to the one, one layer deep on the shift key. Anyway, question. Not that you are likely to, it's fairly obscure, but if you did a Down Under band playing, what would be your first choice to profile? Hope you're hanging in there. Your podcast has brought so much joy to my life over the last few years and soundtrack many a commute or road trip. Keep being awesome. Cheers. Blair.

• 30:27Yasi Salek?

  Thanks, Blair.

• 30:28Speaker 04

  Thanks, Blair.

• 30:28Yasi Salek?

I have to say, first of all, in an amazing turn of events, I have changed my stance on Australians.

• 30:36Speaker 04

Since when? How long, how long has this transformation taken?

• 30:39Yasi Salek?

I've received so many wonderful and beautiful messages and gifts from Australian people.

• 30:44Speaker 04

Great. Not through threats then, through gifts and joy.

• 30:47Yasi Salek?

You catch more flies with honey, babe. For me, with gifts, honestly, that's my love language. People have just been so kind and you know what? I love Down Under.

• 30:57Speaker 04

Great. Love, I love, yeah, love the transformation.

• 30:59Yasi Salek?

  Barbie, G'day, mate.

• 31:01Speaker 04

I like Australia, I gotta say.

• 31:03Yasi Salek?

  Yeah, you popular there probably.

• 31:04Speaker 04

  It's fun to tour there.

• 31:05Yasi Salek?

  Yeah, great food, beautiful beaches.

• 31:08Speaker 04

  Yeah, and there are bands.

• 31:10Yasi Salek?

Okay, well, yes, lots of bands. I think. She's, she's Down Under encapsulates New Zealand as well, right?

• 31:17Speaker 04

If you can include New Zealand, that's good too, cause.

• 31:19Yasi Salek?

Cause I would, I love the clean.

• 31:21Speaker 04

  Oh, yeah.

• 31:22Yasi Salek?

I love all the flying nun bands, honestly.

• 31:24Speaker 04

There was a band that we saw when we were, I say we as a band, the Arctic Monkeys. Well, both of us went, me and Alex both went to see The Vines.

• 31:34Yasi Salek?

  Sure.

• 31:34Speaker 04

  That's one of our first.

• 31:35Yasi Salek?

  Famously Australian, yeah.

• 31:37Speaker 04

Famously Australian. And then New Zealand, there's a band called The D4, which is very good rock and roll music.

• 31:43Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 31:44Speaker 04

And we saw them, they had like, they did like a free show in Sheffield once and we all went, like when we were, again underage, sneaking into these places.

• 31:50Yasi Salek?

  As usual.

• 31:51Speaker 04

A true rock and roll experience.

• 31:52Yasi Salek?

I mean, obviously the first choice would probably be Nicolas Cave, starting with the birthday party because he is.

• 31:59Speaker 04

I just heard Nicolas Cage, cause I wanted to.

• 32:01Yasi Salek?

Yeah, Nicolas Cage, who is not Australian, but still would put him.

• 32:05Speaker 04

  Kylie Minogue.

• 32:06Yasi Salek?

I don't know if she would make it into the.

• 32:08Speaker 04

But they did a song together at some point, so you'd have to talk about it.

• 32:11Yasi Salek?

We talk about it. I love Kylie Minogue, it's just, you know, we don't cover that kind of thing on, there's also Death Bells is a new Australian band that I quite, not new-ish.

• 32:21Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 32:21Yasi Salek?

I quite like. Down Under stays producing fine rock and roll music.

• 32:27Speaker 04

Yeah, I think they got it there.

• 32:29Yasi Salek?

Maybe it's because they're, they're like behind in time in a good way. Do you know what I mean?

• 32:33Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 32:33Yasi Salek?

Rock hasn't died there yet, like it died everywhere else.

• 32:37Yasi Salek?

  They don't know.

• 32:38Speaker 04

They've got their own animals and everything.

• 32:39Yasi Salek?

They have their own animals. They're so cute. Also insane weird spiders and things that'll kill you and stuff.

• 32:45Speaker 04

And they've got nine of the world's 10 poisonous snakes in Australia. That's too many.

• 32:50Yasi Salek?

  That's too.

• 32:50Speaker 04

  Like for one place.

• 32:51Yasi Salek?

You know, I camped in the bush once, you guys. Can you believe it?

• 32:54Speaker 04

Have you ever seen Wolf Creek, the movie?

• 32:56Yasi Salek?

  No.

• 32:56Speaker 04

It's like an Australian horror film that's really terrifying about people like backpacking.

• 33:01Yasi Salek?

They, I went to high school in Singapore famously and we did a school trip to the literal, the bush in Western Australia.

• 33:08Speaker 04

  People do that.

• 33:09Yasi Salek?

I don't know either. And we had this like.

• 33:10Speaker 04

  Not any formal training.

• 33:12Yasi Salek?

I was like 15 years old. They're like, yeah, we're gonna do this. They sent us off with an absolutely mentally ill Australian man tour guide who'd worn no shoes through the bush. Nine of the 10 most poisonous things in the world. This man barefoot.

• 33:26Speaker 04

Don't quote me on that, but I think.

• 33:27Yasi Salek?

Trying to give us marmite sandwich. No, vegemite. Marmite is your guys' is. Your other gross thing. Sure.

• 33:33Speaker 04

Vegemite is different and is worse. And I don't, come at me.

• 33:36Yasi Salek?

  Disgusting.

• 33:37Speaker 04

But the thing about the barefoot thing, not to get too into it, but I think in a way that made me feel safer.

• 33:43Yasi Salek?

Because you're like, this man has probably like-

• 33:45Speaker 04

He's confident enough to do this.

• 33:46Yasi Salek?

With his bare hands, has strangled nine of those snakes.

• 33:48Speaker 04

Like, me in shoes is better off than him in no shoes.

• 33:52Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 33:52Speaker 04

  And he's the expert.

• 33:53Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 33:53Speaker 04

But I might be just dumb, blindly following this guy.

• 33:56Yasi Salek?

We all live, all these 15 year olds.

• 33:58Speaker 04

Proof's in the pudding. From Jess Carzello, greetings from Long Beach. Though I'm somewhat resistant to labels, I suppose I'd have to cop to being a band's plan completist. I've listened to every episode since the truncated, mercifully for you, I know, Steely Dan episode. The podcast has taken the top spot in every year since the dawn of rap. While we're here, I'll also ambivalently admit to membership in the pod's core demographic of Gen X men.

• 34:26Yasi Salek?

  My bread and butter.

• 34:28Speaker 04

While listening to 90s guitar music was also a formative experience for me, and many of my favorite bands have been covered on the show. It's really you, not the music that keeps me listening. The staggering amount of research you put into each episode, the way that you humanize the arc of the bands by getting into their personal histories, often including unsung accomplices and facilitators, their sun signs and all the goss. But mostly, it's your voice, vibes and extraordinary weaving. It truly has become a comforting and reliable part of my life over the past four years, almost to the day. Thank you. Now to the question, what's the deal with the heavy sigh before the breaks? It's clearly intentional. It also seems that Rob Harvilla, we painted this gesture.

• 35:10Speaker 04

Thank you for your time and consideration. The very best. Regards, Jesse.

• 35:14Yasi Salek?

Okay. Did I engineer this whole episode to shower myself in praise?

• 35:19Speaker 04

  I-

• 35:20Yasi Salek?

  We'll never know.

• 35:20Speaker 04

Yeah, I didn't, I hadn't started to think that yet.

• 35:23Yasi Salek?

Maybe, maybe when you got to like the ninth line of this particular-

• 35:27Speaker 04

  I'm just telling you about-

• 35:28Yasi Salek?

Well, first of all, thank you so much for those amazing kind words. And you're, you just pointed out, I totally forgot, we, I think I missed the four year anniversary of Band's Plan was like this week. Okay, producer Liz has now informed me that it's just a editing thing. I, that's not me sighing.

• 35:43Speaker 04

  That's a sound effect.

• 35:44Yasi Salek?

It's a sound effect. Yeah. Okay. That's very funny that you thought it was me going.

• 35:49Yasi Salek?

  That's not, that's-

• 35:50Speaker 04

  That's a sigh.

• 35:51Yasi Salek?

And some, yeah, that's just, I think, how they delineate the ad break.

• 35:57Speaker 05

• 36:27Yasi Salek?

Okay. This is from the Indie 500 Podcast. Hi, Ossie. First off, we'd like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all the inspiration and entertainment you have provided us over the years. In December, you created a cameo for us, Phil and Zach, with some words of encouragement and a few tips about starting a podcast of our own. Proud to say this week, we record the third episode and are having a tremendous amount of fun doing so as a passion project. Thank you. I love to hear this.

• 36:52Speaker 04

  That's very nice.

• 36:52Yasi Salek?

I'm really good at pep talks. I don't know if you know this.

• 36:55Speaker 04

  Yeah, I can see.

• 36:56Yasi Salek?

As for our question, say you're grubbing on some Taco Bell and all of a sudden your phone rings and it's King Charles calling you and he says, "Can you do the voice?"

• 37:07Speaker 04

I don't know if it'd say, "Hey babe," though.

• 37:09Yasi Salek?

But like he does in this scenario.

• 37:11Speaker 04

"I want to organize a concert celebrating British music of the last 40 years. Pick a band from the 80s, 90s, and the noughties." That's what it'd say. "And you can have one wild card from any era for a total of four bands."

• 37:24Yasi Salek?

Who you got? That was really good. That was a real good posh accent.

• 37:27Speaker 04

Yeah, I think it was like semi posh.

• 37:29Yasi Salek?

  Right.

• 37:29Speaker 04

  Like attainable posh.

• 37:31Yasi Salek?

Sure. P.S. I wouldn't count on a Smiths reunion, but Morrissey said he'd do a soul set if you want. I'm wearing a Smiths t-shirt today. You said anything and then you threw a, you threw a

• 37:41Speaker 04

  There was a

• 37:42Yasi Salek?

  Rule on it, King Charles.

• 37:44Speaker 04

  Yeah, sorry about that.

• 37:45Yasi Salek?

Well, first of all, I would say fuck the monarchy. But after that, I would plan my, I would take the beautiful generosity of the monarchy to throw my British fest. This is a hard one.

• 37:59Speaker 04

  Yeah, that's, yeah.

• 38:00Yasi Salek?

Especially because he took the Smiths away. I am gonna count on a Smiths reunion.

• 38:04Speaker 04

  Yeah, I know, gonna say.

• 38:05Yasi Salek?

They're never gonna do it, but this is imaginary upside down world, so like the cure still tours.

• 38:10Speaker 04

No, that's what I mean. Everyone I'm trying to think of is like, sort of.

• 38:13Yasi Salek?

Oasis just reunited, so we don't have to pray for that situation.

• 38:17Speaker 04

Well, but does it have to be people that have broken up though? No?

• 38:21Yasi Salek?

  I don't think so.

• 38:21Speaker 04

Okay. Cause I was then, yeah, cause at the end I was like, is it people you'd really wanna get back together if you could? Or are you just British bands that you wanna see?

• 38:28Yasi Salek?

I guess I would do the Smiths, Elastica, the Arctic Monkeys.

• 38:33Speaker 04

  Oh, thank you.

• 38:34Yasi Salek?

  And one wild.

• 38:36Speaker 04

Cause then I can be there.

• 38:36Yasi Salek?

Yeah, then you're there. One wild card from any era for a total of four bands. I know I'm forgetting so much, so I didn't pre-plan for this.

• 38:44Speaker 04

  Yeah, exactly.

• 38:45Yasi Salek?

The other question is like, is it their prime or is it now?

• 38:49Speaker 04

I think that's up to you. I think it could be the prime.

• 38:51Yasi Salek?

Okay. Ooh, hmm. Or do I want Oasis in their prime?

• 38:57Speaker 04

Oh, okay. I'm getting closer to what I think I want, but they're all kinda like.

• 39:01Yasi Salek?

That's not fair, cause you have to go second while I, while I sit there and brainstorm.

• 39:05Speaker 04

Cause if you have it, I can't, kinda.

• 39:06Yasi Salek?

  Is that true?

• 39:06Speaker 04

No, but I'd look like I'm copying you.

• 39:09Yasi Salek?

Okay, yeah, we have a, we have a radius clause in which you can't.

• 39:12Speaker 04

  It's like.

• 39:13Yasi Salek?

I guess I'm gonna, my one wild card would be Joy Division.

• 39:16Speaker 04

And what makes it a wild card?

• 39:18Yasi Salek?

Cause it's, it can be from any era.

• 39:20Speaker 04

  Oh, yeah.

• 39:20Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 39:21Speaker 04

Yeah, okay. So if I'm gonna go eighties, I'm gonna go Stone Roses, because that's the only time I could've done that.

• 39:25Yasi Salek?

  Sure, sure.

• 39:26Speaker 04

Then I want Depeche Mode, cause that can go into the nineties.

• 39:29Yasi Salek?

Yeah, you want them in their nineties prime.

• 39:32Speaker 04

Yeah, just cause I want them. So if I'm gonna have them, I'm gonna have them then. I want the wild card to be Black Sabbath.

• 39:40Speaker 04

Because that'll be like a different thing. I mean, I want royalty to see that.

• 39:42Yasi Salek?

Here's the truth. I'm sorry, I'm firing the Arctic Monkeys.

• 39:46Speaker 04

  That's a wild card, yeah.

• 39:47Yasi Salek?

I'm really sorry. I've seen you guys a bunch of times.

• 39:49Speaker 04

  Yeah, that's fine.

• 39:49Yasi Salek?

  In arguably a prime.

• 39:52Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 39:53Yasi Salek?

Um, I'm gonna throw the laws.

• 39:55Speaker 04

Oh, yeah, yeah. Oh, that's good, yeah. So I need a 2000s band, don't I? Because I've done my wild card of 80s and 90s.

• 40:01Yasi Salek?

  Yeah, one of your compatriots.

• 40:02Speaker 04

Oh, yeah. What do I want from that?

• 40:04Yasi Salek?

  Klaxons.

• 40:05Speaker 04

Yeah, Klaxons. Well, yeah, get some new rave.

• 40:08Yasi Salek?

  The Fratellis.

• 40:08Speaker 04

Fratellis, we've got one. 2000s, I would like...

• 40:12Yasi Salek?

  What about the Libertines?

• 40:14Speaker 04

Yeah, I would. I'd do the Libertines.

• 40:15Yasi Salek?

  Yeah, right?

• 40:16Speaker 04

Because that is like, I was like 16 and that was like the shit then.

• 40:18Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 40:18Speaker 04

Yeah, that's, that's a good, thank you for the help.

• 40:20Yasi Salek?

Perhaps we could combine and have an eight-band bill.

• 40:23Speaker 04

Well, I think if we're gonna both be there, we're gonna have to play.

• 40:25Yasi Salek?

  We get to have both.

• 40:26Speaker 04

And now I'm not playing it anymore.

• 40:27Yasi Salek?

Now, now you don't have to play. It's even better. You don't have to work.

• 40:29Speaker 04

  I can just watch.

• 40:30Yasi Salek?

  All right.

• 40:31Speaker 04

Adam Dorfman wants to know. He says, Yasi, please tell me there will be a pulp episode. Sincerely, Adam. P.S. So happy you seem to be doing okay.

• 40:40Yasi Salek?

Do I seem to be doing okay?

• 40:41Speaker 04

  Yeah, actually, the observation, Adam.

• 40:43Yasi Salek?

Thank you, Adam. He also put four praying hands emojis.

• 40:45Speaker 04

Yeah, see, I ain't got the emojis. I've just got question marks.

• 40:47Yasi Salek?

  Oh, I see, okay.

• 40:48Speaker 04

Mine on Android, what is this?

• 40:50Yasi Salek?

  What's going on there?

• 40:51Speaker 04

  Got a glitch over here.

• 40:52Yasi Salek?

  Yes.

• 40:55Yasi Salek?

Already started prepping. We couldn't ignore Sheffield's other finest.

• 41:00Speaker 04

That's true. And I, I assumed you weren't just reading the book.

• 41:04Yasi Salek?

  For my own personal pleasure.

• 41:05Speaker 04

Not that you wouldn't, but I mean, when you've got so much, you have to read for this.

• 41:09Yasi Salek?

I no longer read music books for my own personal pleasure. I want to read like a

• 41:12Speaker 04

  There's no space.

• 41:13Yasi Salek?

Novel or a historical tome. You can't do a British season, I think, without doing pulp.

• 41:19Speaker 04

  I agree.

• 41:20Yasi Salek?

  They started in the 70s.

• 41:22Speaker 04

  That's crazy.

• 41:23Yasi Salek?

  Isn't that nuts?

• 41:23Speaker 04

  Wow.

• 41:24Yasi Salek?

This one is from Miriam Bale. Diriassi and Banzplane. Nightmare that this is a suggestion more than a question. Don't you worry, honey, I'm used to it. You think, will you do pulp is not a suggestion? But will you cover Saint Etienne on your Brit season? They're so important on the overlap of indie, pop, and dance, especially the heavenly social. Shout out to heavenly social. I hope to do something there in London when I come over in the summer. But of course, slightly intimidating since Bob Stanley literally wrote the book on pop. They also brought the world kinnicky. Damn, we don't talk about Kinnick enough. Lead singer is now the host of Desert Island Discs and Shampoo. I don't think Shampoo were huge outside of Asia, but an influence on Charli XCX and the unacknowledged precursor of the Spice Girls.

• 42:09Yasi Salek?

As Charli said, they were super pop, but also a little punk. Are you a Saint Etienne?

• 42:14Speaker 04

I don't think I'm that familiar, to be honest. It's like a place in France, isn't it? I think it's like a place as well.

• 42:20Yasi Salek?

  Sounds like it.

• 42:22Speaker 04

Yeah. But no, I don't know. I'm not, I'm not that familiar.

• 42:24Yasi Salek?

I'll be honest, I have some familiarity with Saint Etienne, which I've, what I've heard I've liked, but I've never deep gone in, so maybe it's a good excuse for me to go deep.

• 42:34Speaker 04

  Exactly.

• 42:35Yasi Salek?

I'm gonna give you a hard maybe on Saint Etienne. I honestly kind of would love to do an episode that's just like, I want to say this with kindness, but I don't know how else to say it, which is like Britpop also rans, you know, like a Kinnick era shit. There's so many, like, Bradleys, who are not, these are great bands, but who had like one or two hits, but weren't maybe like the massive.

• 43:00Speaker 04

No, yeah, that's true. You might feel like throw them all into one episode.

• 43:03Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 43:03Speaker 04

  But that's good, yeah.

• 43:04Yasi Salek?

  Thanks for your support.

• 43:06Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 43:07Yasi Salek?

This is from Jesse Alter. Hi, Yasi, longtime listener since the days of one hour episodes. Oh, the hallowed days of one hour episodes. And I love the show. I'm also an American who went to school in Southeast Asia and wanted to give a shout out to MTV Asia and Channel 5. What were your thoughts on the first time you tuned into those channels, having moved from the US? And did they ultimately expose you to any artists or genres you wouldn't have otherwise come across watching American MTV? Michael learns to rock? What now? I don't remember Michael learns to rock. Thanks so much for everything you do to educate and entertain us listeners. I live in the UK now. Shirley the Ringer can fly you and Rob over here to do a live Britpop show, innit? Jesse. I believe Shirley the Ringer should and can. I'm just kidding.

• 43:48Yasi Salek?

I remember it being definitely weirder than what I was accustomed to on MTV America, but it did teach me Robbie Williams.

• 43:58Speaker 04

Is that why MTV Asia to thank for that?

• 44:01Yasi Salek?

Yeah, because I think you probably know this wasn't too big in America like.

• 44:07Speaker 04

  No, I know.

• 44:07Yasi Salek?

Kind of the whole thing about the movie doing not that well here is because people are like, I'm sorry, who is this?

• 44:15Speaker 04

  Yeah, like.

• 44:16Yasi Salek?

  Not only the monkey.

• 44:17Speaker 04

  We don't know.

• 44:17Yasi Salek?

Yeah, we don't even know this person.

• 44:18Speaker 04

Yeah, Rubble's a massive for us.

• 44:20Yasi Salek?

Massive. And for me, watching it from Asia and then I'm like, and through.

• 44:25Speaker 04

  Oh, my God.

• 44:27Yasi Salek?

  Yeah. She offers me protection.

• 44:30Speaker 04

  Record back to front.

• 44:31Yasi Salek?

It's so fucking good. I want them to play at my funeral, actually. I'm sure it's a very common.

• 44:36Speaker 04

  Massive request for funerals.

• 44:37Yasi Salek?

  Funeral song, yeah.

• 44:39Speaker 04

Yeah. She's the one is another one on that song that people, it's a big wedding one, I think.

• 44:42Yasi Salek?

Yeah, it's in the, it's in the film.

• 44:44Speaker 04

  Oh, yeah.

• 44:44Yasi Salek?

Yeah, there's a beautiful dance scene between the monkey and the actress that plays Nicole Appleton.

• 44:50Speaker 04

  Oh, wow.

• 44:51Yasi Salek?

Yeah. All I can remember honestly is like weird dance stuff like.

• 44:55Speaker 04

  From the movie?

• 44:55Yasi Salek?

No, from MTV Asia, like Eiffel sixty six.

• 44:58Speaker 04

  Oh, wow, yeah.

• 44:59Yasi Salek?

I'm blue, double D, double D. Sixty five, sorry.

• 45:01Speaker 04

  Sorry not to.

• 45:02Yasi Salek?

  Buffalo sixty six.

• 45:03Speaker 04

Not to explain it too much, but.

• 45:05Yasi Salek?

Couldn't believe it. I guess they were kind of probably a little big in England too.

• 45:08Speaker 04

That was a big one too.

• 45:09Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 45:09Speaker 04

I'm trying to figure out what he's actually saying and all that. It was like.

• 45:12Yasi Salek?

  Double D, double D.

• 45:13Speaker 04

If I was green, I would die. I was like, why?

• 45:16Yasi Salek?

Is that what he was saying?

• 45:17Speaker 04

No, that's what like kids at school would think.

• 45:18Yasi Salek?

I thought he was just saying double D, double D.

• 45:20Speaker 04

That is the real, no, I think it is. But I remember this girl at school being like, no, he says like, if I'm green, I would die. It's like, why is being green that bad compared to being blue?

• 45:27Yasi Salek?

  Uh, the Venga bus.

• 45:28Speaker 04

Yeah, the Venga bus is coming.

• 45:30Yasi Salek?

  Massive.

• 45:30Speaker 04

And everybody's, whatever it is, yeah.

• 45:31Yasi Salek?

And everybody's jumping New York to San Francisco, the inner city disco. Come on.

• 45:35Speaker 04

Yeah, that bus has got some mileage.

• 45:37Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 45:38Speaker 04

So that's kind of, it probably felt a bit like a lot of Europe MTV, do they?

• 45:42Yasi Salek?

Exactly. It was kind of blatter because in Singapore, club culture was really big. So that was like, that's what I remember.

• 45:49Speaker 04

Lauren Griffiths wants to know, says, hiya, yasay. This is English.

• 45:52Yasi Salek?

  Mm hmm.

• 45:53Speaker 04

Oh yeah, here we go. As an American expat now living in the UK, obviously what she's done there is she's got herself an English husband and says hi all of a sudden.

• 46:01Yasi Salek?

What's it like to live my dream is what I first need to say Lauren.

• 46:07Speaker 04

So she's got an English husband. I'm now living in the UK with an English husband. I'm here to say, keep the faith. I see a fine Scotsman in your future.

• 46:15Yasi Salek?

Hell yeah. As you know, I want a British boyfriend, husband, and I've put you on the task and it's been two years and you've done nothing. And then I kind of started to think, maybe I want a Scottish one because I can't understand anything they say. And I think that is a recipe. Yeah, it's a recipe for long-term happiness.

• 46:30Speaker 04

Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, I think you're right. Actually, yeah. So Lauren wants to do a shag, marry, kill.

• 46:37Yasi Salek?

It's a nice way to put it, a nice British way to put it.

• 46:38Speaker 04

You know, there's a, there's a TV show in England that was on like, it wasn't on at night, so they had to call it something else, but it was called Snug, Marry, Avoid. Like avoid.

• 46:47Yasi Salek?

They couldn't even say kill, avoid.

• 46:49Speaker 04

  Too harsh. Snug, marry, avoid.

• 46:50Yasi Salek?

But then it gets to 10pm and they put full cock and balls naked on the, on the.

• 46:54Speaker 04

Yeah, but that's what, that's what that's for. There's a water she had at a certain time of day. You know that kids should be in bed and you can watch whatever you want.

• 47:01Yasi Salek?

You can put Naked Attraction on 10pm, full genitalia. Yeah.

• 47:04Speaker 04

So the Snug, Marry, Avoid was like, you'd do it in person to like a random person at the street. They'd just be like, they'd have to go in this little weird booth and take the makeup off.

• 47:11Yasi Salek?

  That's crazy.

• 47:13Speaker 04

I think that's what it was. Yeah, I don't think it led to much, like, many steps forward in mental health.

• 47:19Yasi Salek?

  Sure, sure. Yeah.

• 47:20Speaker 04

So anyway, she was the shag, marry, curl, Liam Gallagher, Damon Albarn, and Ian Brown. She says, I find them all extremely shaggable.

• 47:28Yasi Salek?

You want, you want to make sure that people don't think it was you saying that.

• 47:31Speaker 04

Because if I pause for too long and then say, I find them both extremely.

• 47:33Yasi Salek?

Bit of a misinterpretation. We're gonna, we're gonna meet the Sheffield Star again.

• 47:37Speaker 04

  I mean, that's the goal.

• 47:38Yasi Salek?

I know you're watching Sheffield Star.

• 47:40Speaker 04

She said, I find them all extremely shaggable, but curious to hear what you think. Love you, love the pod. Your cousin from Detroit, Lauren. Detroit to England. Wow.

• 47:48Yasi Salek?

Detroit to England. Again, what's it like to live my dream? Um, this was a hard one when it came across my desk.

• 47:55Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 47:55Yasi Salek?

Because I don't want to avoid any of them. I don't want to kill any of them.

• 48:00Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 48:01Yasi Salek?

But I think I would have to.

• 48:05Yasi Salek?

Is it in the prime? Let's.

• 48:08Speaker 04

  I assume.

• 48:08Yasi Salek?

Can we say it's in their prime?

• 48:09Speaker 04

Yeah, I think it's gotta be, yeah.

• 48:11Yasi Salek?

I would marry Liam Gallagher. Because that seems fun.

• 48:14Speaker 04

Yeah, and you also kind of know that you you might eventually not be married to him. Not because of you, but because like he's

• 48:21Yasi Salek?

But honestly, if I had to commit to a lifetime, it's

• 48:25Speaker 04

So you're doing it thinking it's gonna be forever, obviously, that's the idea.

• 48:28Yasi Salek?

But would you rather, would you, I mean, just imagine, would you rather be married to to Ian Brown the rest of your life?

• 48:36Speaker 04

No, I think you made the right choice.

• 48:37Yasi Salek?

Yeah. I think I would shag Ian Brown

• 48:39Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 48:40Yasi Salek?

in the prime, and unfortunately, to my Blur fans and love and respect to Damon Albarn, I think I would have to kill him.

• 48:49Speaker 04

Yeah. It's tough, because you don't, like you said, you don't want to kill any of them. I might marry Damon Albarn, though. I think that's more like a long term. Settled down, you know, I bet like I just imagine like, like

• 49:02Yasi Salek?

  He's also richer.

• 49:03Speaker 04

Right, well, I also just think it could be quite chaotic with Liam, so that might just be a good shag.

• 49:07Yasi Salek?

  He doesn't sound fun.

• 49:08Speaker 04

Yeah, but as you get older, I don't know, it might get a bit much. You know, really, can't we just like have a day off and just like relax and watch TV for a bit?

• 49:15Yasi Salek?

He goes on, he goes on beautiful meandering walks around the countryside.

• 49:18Speaker 04

I feel like, I mean, maybe also, you know, he likes to be alone a lot on these walks and runs, so that might be a good thing to have.

• 49:23Yasi Salek?

Yeah, I can have my own private time.

• 49:25Speaker 04

Once you've had enough, you're just like

• 49:25Yasi Salek?

Think of how many parkers I have access to.

• 49:27Speaker 04

Get out of the house, yeah.

• 49:27Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 49:28Speaker 04

It's true. All them wallabies, a lot of clocks, shoes around. So, yeah, yeah, I could agree with yours on that.

• 49:34Yasi Salek?

Yeah, thank you for your support. All right, this is from Timothy M Moran. Who is the one person most indispensable to preserving knowing the actual history of the bands you've covered? Who would you sit down with for one true telling of the most important figures of the time? For instance, someone like Chris Cornell's wife slash manager, her name is Susan Silver, first of all, she has a name. Or perhaps a journalist with the most access to the most people, not the best examples, but ask Sean, Chris, or Bill, since this probably won't make sense. Okay, rude, but the NBA version, no, you're right, I won't know what this means. The NBA version of this answer would be Steve Kerr. He won championships with Michael Jordan, Michael Gordon, Michael Jordan and

• 50:15Yasi Salek?

Tim Duncan, the coaches for those two teams were the premier coaches from nineteen ninety one to twenty fourteen. Currently, he's coaching the Golden State Warriors and looks like the beach lifeguard that gets to drive the ATV. He coached Steph Curry and the Warriors to four championships. Not because of his success necessarily, but because of his remarkable access to the premier figures since nineteen ninety one. Person sounds British too. We don't say premier that much.

• 50:37Speaker 04

  Hmm.

• 50:37Yasi Salek?

  Premier.

• 50:38Speaker 04

  Premier League.

• 50:39Yasi Salek?

  Premier League.

• 50:39Speaker 04

  Premier, yeah.

• 50:40Yasi Salek?

  Yeah. Damn, I don't have a, I frankly.

• 50:43Speaker 04

I've sort of, I've just got caught up in the basketball statistics.

• 50:46Yasi Salek?

I think the, the, the like, this is a low hanging fruit answer to this question. But I think the one that pops to my mind would be Courtney Love about Kurt.

• 50:56Speaker 04

So like the most like access and most like.

• 50:59Yasi Salek?

Yeah, and knows so much and she has an incredible mind and was obviously a deep confidant. She's very smart and would probably, you know.

• 51:07Speaker 04

  Yeah, I mean.

• 51:08Yasi Salek?

Make me understand things in ways I never even thought.

• 51:11Speaker 04

  Yoko.

• 51:12Yasi Salek?

  Yoko, that's a good one.

• 51:13Speaker 04

A good one, because I mean, she's got some shit. You know, you just never really know, do you?

• 51:17Yasi Salek?

  You just never really know.

• 51:19Speaker 04

Um, hey, I see, I'm seeing Oasis for one of their Manchester shows this summer. If I can get close enough to ask them one question, what should it be? Thanks, Brian. That's good. Ambitious of you, Brian, to think you could do that.

• 51:32Yasi Salek?

Yeah, I don't know. Liam's not letting you anywhere near him.

• 51:35Speaker 04

Question is, how did I get this last?

• 51:39Speaker 04

  Who's your security?

• 51:40Yasi Salek?

Can you ask Liam, will he marry me?

• 51:43Speaker 04

Might as well. Go for that.

• 51:44Yasi Salek?

  What, I mean, so.

• 51:45Speaker 04

  Since the game.

• 51:45Yasi Salek?

You have had the opportunity to be close to and ask questions.

• 51:49Speaker 04

  Conversations.

• 51:50Yasi Salek?

  Have you asked any deeply?

• 51:51Speaker 04

  If he'll marry you.

• 51:53Yasi Salek?

Well, no, no, no. He's, he's married and I don't wanna, I don't wanna disrespect his, his, his current marriage.

• 51:58Speaker 04

He's washed great. She was that too.

• 51:59Yasi Salek?

  Yeah, she seems lovely.

• 52:00Speaker 04

Thing I will say about conversations with Liam is that you don't often need to ask any questions.

• 52:06Yasi Salek?

Sure, sure, sure, sure. Yes, that's.

• 52:08Speaker 04

And you're, you're offered information either way.

• 52:10Yasi Salek?

  Which sounds great.

• 52:11Speaker 04

And it's very entertaining and he's very nice to talk to. But I don't, I think I was just happy to listen and, yeah, and I was answering questions.

• 52:17Yasi Salek?

Oh, I, sorry, I, can I revise my answer?

• 52:20Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 52:20Yasi Salek?

There was an incident in which he was thrown off a plane going to, I believe, Hong Kong. The only information I could find is that had something to do with a pastry. And I, that's actually been eating at me. Like, I need to know what happened.

• 52:37Speaker 04

That's great then. I actually do need to know.

• 52:39Yasi Salek?

I need to know, like, what was the scenario?

• 52:41Speaker 04

Funny, like, airplane stories about him, for sure.

• 52:43Yasi Salek?

He was, like, banned from the airline.

• 52:45Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 52:45Yasi Salek?

But all, it was just surrounding a pastry. That was the only information.

• 52:49Speaker 04

But there's one where, there's one story, I don't know how true it is, but, because there were, at the time, there were a few airlines that they just weren't allowed to fly on.

• 52:56Yasi Salek?

  Yeah, just a few.

• 52:58Speaker 04

Because of antics on a plane. But he, apparently, once, like, found himself in the bit where the captain, like, sleeps when he's not, he was, like, on a long flight to, like, Australia.

• 53:09Yasi Salek?

He was just, like, accidentally found himself in the captain's quarters.

• 53:13Speaker 04

Wandering around drinking, before nine eleven.

• 53:15Yasi Salek?

Sure, when you could do those kind of things.

• 53:17Speaker 04

He, like, went, laid down in this bed, thinking it's just somewhere he could go to sleep, and it was, like, the captain's bed. And apparently, he came to have his break, and he's like, he's, like, woke him up, and Liam went to him, he's like, he's like, who are you? He's like, I'm captain. He's like, well, why aren't you flying this fucking plane?

• 53:31Yasi Salek?

  Fair question. Absolutely fair question.

• 53:33Speaker 04

And I choose to believe it, whether it's true or not.

• 53:36Yasi Salek?

  Yeah, that's a good one.

• 53:37Speaker 04

And it would definitely get you banned from an airline, so it checks out.

• 53:39Yasi Salek?

Hundred percent. If you have time for two questions, Brian, maybe verify that.

• 53:43Speaker 04

  They're both similar, both airplane-based.

• 53:46Yasi Salek?

Oh, this is an interesting question. Andrew Merkel, hey, Ossie, your pod has been a highlight of my week for multiple years now, and I'm super thankful for the world you've created, for all of us obsessive music nerds who are also so cool and hot. That's fucking right. My girlfriend commissioned a custom playlist for me during Christmas twenty twenty-three, and it came through right before I flew to Europe with my family, and I just listened to it on repeat until I got back. You're welcome. Anyway, you've mentioned on a few episodes that success in the music industry is the intersection of talent and attractiveness, and it's exceedingly rare for ugly people to make it big. Okay, first of all, I just want to clarify that that's actually not what I ever said. I actually said that success in the music industry is the intersection of talent and luck.

• 54:24Speaker 04

  However.

• 54:25Yasi Salek?

But I do feel attractiveness plays a large role often. But I do not think, I think the two major components are talent and luck. Attractiveness is a side component.

• 54:36Speaker 04

However, though, in order to successfully defend this, you have to mention some people who are ugly and successful.

• 54:42Yasi Salek?

Yeah, I mean, you're not going to trap me into that. That's not.

• 54:45Speaker 04

I just wanted to make sure you.

• 54:46Yasi Salek?

  Yeah, it's a good.

• 54:47Speaker 04

  We're aware of that.

• 54:48Yasi Salek?

Is, in your professional opinion, who is an artist that was so beautiful that it totally overshadowed whatever talent they had? Or conversely, an artist that was so talented that it made them attractive by association?

• 54:57Speaker 04

Ah, so there we go. So it is loaded.

• 55:00Yasi Salek?

Loaded question. I'm not gonna be calling any uggos out on this beautiful show.

• 55:08Speaker 04

Is there anyone that you can like, that we don't know what they look like, so you could like use that as like a trick answer? Like the gorillas, but like you do know who they are, but you know.

• 55:16Yasi Salek?

I don't know. So beautiful it overshadowed the talent they had. That seems to happen more to women.

• 55:23Speaker 04

  No, yeah, exactly.

• 55:24Yasi Salek?

Pop stars and stuff who like write their own music and nobody cares because they're so hot or whatever.

• 55:29Speaker 04

They just assumed that it can't have been them.

• 55:30Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 55:31Speaker 04

But it's like, what? Yeah, that makes no sense.

• 55:34Yasi Salek?

I mean, I'm not, again, I'm not gonna name any names, but there's a lot of men, artists who have been made attractive.

• 55:42Speaker 04

  Oh, yeah, yeah.

• 55:43Yasi Salek?

  By their talent.

• 55:44Speaker 04

Well, yeah, that's true too. Not by the skincare routine.

• 55:48Yasi Salek?

Not by the skincare routine. But once again, I need to, it's talent and luck.

• 55:53Speaker 04

Talent and luck, yeah, exactly. Right place at the right time.

• 55:55Yasi Salek?

It is important, but not the most important.

• 55:57Speaker 04

And it's different as time goes by.

• 56:00Yasi Salek?

  Sure, beauty standards have changed.

• 56:02Speaker 04

Well, even the fact that you would know what the music was before you'd even seen them a lot of the times.

• 56:06Yasi Salek?

  Well, MTV changed everything.

• 56:08Speaker 04

MTV was just like, oh, that's what that person looks like.

• 56:10Yasi Salek?

Died. Cause people were like, oh no, we don't even wanna see these people.

• 56:13Speaker 04

I remember like first seeing people that I like heard on the radio, like the presenters and stuff and seeing what they looked like. Cause you just like picture them a completely different way. I was like, oh, whoa, like I like, you've pictured, yeah.

• 56:23Yasi Salek?

People always say that I'm tall.

• 56:26Speaker 04

  Sounds tall.

• 56:27Yasi Salek?

Well, that I am, no, I actually the opposite, that I don't sound tall.

• 56:30Speaker 04

Oh, like the surprise that you're tall.

• 56:31Yasi Salek?

That I'm surprised that I'm tall.

• 56:32Speaker 04

Wow. Why do you be surprised that someone's tall? How do you even get there?

• 56:35Yasi Salek?

  Couldn't even, couldn't, couldn't be me.

• 56:37Speaker 04

  No.

• 56:38Yasi Salek?

  Yeah, let's do this one.

• 56:39Speaker 04

All right, Tad. The monkey movie made me think about how Robbie Williams had one foot in the Britpop world, departing with Liam Gallagher, the ironic detachment, and one foot in the straight up pop world, dating an all saint and being in Take That. Do you think that songs like Angels and Rock DJ are legit Britpop or nah?

• 56:57Yasi Salek?

  And through it all.

• 57:00Speaker 04

  I mean.

• 57:01Yasi Salek?

  She offers me protection.

• 57:03Speaker 04

That like the visuals have made you think a certain way, like how he looks, how the video is.

• 57:07Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 57:07Speaker 04

Like if you just heard it, I mean, sonically, it probably sounds more like pop music than, but like ballads are ballads.

• 57:15Yasi Salek?

It's no, Angels is not that far from Wonderwall.

• 57:19Speaker 04

No, that's what I mean. I think it's like, I don't know if I, my. View of it has been skewed by just the fact that I know Robbie Williams is and what it looks like and what it is. And that he was a pop star.

• 57:29Yasi Salek?

But you know it the best because he wasn't in in any way considered in the same category as like Blur and Oasis.

• 57:36Speaker 04

No, and I just think I think it's funny that in England, I think culturally Britpop was something outside of the music as well. So they were all hanging out with each other.

• 57:45Yasi Salek?

  Exactly.

• 57:45Speaker 04

And he was at Glastonbury and he was like doing it. Because like there's always this like

• 57:48Yasi Salek?

He was in his little red tracksuit.

• 57:50Speaker 04

Naive idea when I was a kid that like the pop stars were all like clean living, like good people and the rock stars were just like the ones drinking all the time.

• 57:57Yasi Salek?

  Sure.

• 57:57Speaker 04

But they were all partying together and obviously as I got older, I realized that.

• 58:01Yasi Salek?

  First hand.

• 58:02Speaker 04

It's like, oh wow, good for you. And then so like the they were they're like, he was probably as rock and roll as them in terms of like lifestyle and living.

• 58:11Yasi Salek?

  No, I think more honestly.

• 58:14Speaker 04

And then, yeah, like that the song type of a song like Angels is, yeah, you're right. It's not that far away from a Wonderwall.

• 58:20Yasi Salek?

Yeah, but he did also didn't have any supersonic, you know, he's not, it wasn't a rock.

• 58:24Speaker 04

And it's also as often in like a pop album or pop music, they'll be like, they do one rock song and then they do one like pop ballad and then they do one thing. So it's like, you know, and like the person who writes these songs or helps people write songs. Knows how to do that and knows how to write a rock song or knows how to like an indie song.

• 58:42Yasi Salek?

Totally. I think no, I mean, again, I wasn't there. Also, the ironic detachment, babe. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's just being British.

• 58:50Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 58:50Yasi Salek?

That's that dry British, British wit. I think he was pretty straight up pop world. But I do think Angels is a fucking goddamn gorgeous, beautiful song and an eternal banger.

• 59:03Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 59:03Yasi Salek?

  And I enjoyed.

• 59:04Speaker 04

And they both dated an all saint, didn't they?

• 59:06Yasi Salek?

Yes. Well, Liam Gallagher married, they both married her.

• 59:09Speaker 04

  Yeah. Oh, yeah, right.

• 59:10Yasi Salek?

And she had a baby with Liam.

• 59:12Speaker 04

Oh, the other all saint is married to another Liam from The Prodigy.

• 59:15Yasi Salek?

Oh, is that interesting? I will say, and I said it on the big picture and I'll say it again, so I think it bears repeating. It's not totally related to this question, but it does continue to shock me that in almost every scenario where an actor plays a musician, the actor is much more gorgeous.

• 59:31Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah, right.

• 59:31Yasi Salek?

Or at least marginally more gorgeous, except for the two times that I have seen Liam Gallagher portrayed on film. And Liam Gallagher is much more gorgeous.

• 59:39Speaker 04

  Who was he portrayed by?

• 59:41Yasi Salek?

Not that the person who played him was ugly or anything and better man. He was a fine, a good looking guy, but Liam Gallagher is just so beaut- especially at his prime. And then there's another actor that plays him in the Creation movie also. It's just, I'm like, you can't, you can't.

• 59:55Speaker 04

Now he just needs to be a son, I suppose, at this point. Now he's like old enough.

• 59:58Yasi Salek?

That's actually, he does, he doesn't quite have the exact magic and he looks more like him.

• 1:00:03Speaker 04

But he's like the movie version.

• 1:00:04Yasi Salek?

Totally. Paul Kealan, thanks for another awesome season. Just to be clear, we're not done with the season. This was just mid-season. I have two questions. I was wondering how you think the wave of 90s rock and rave music that emerged across the pond, from Britpop to Manchester to shoegaze. I think we said that in the trailer, even the Manchester, not a, not a genre. Compares and contrasts to the current generation of post-punk revival bands. For context, I'm talking acts like Idles, High Viz, Fontaines DC, and Windmill Scene bands. Never heard of this in my entire life. I'm talking acts like Black Country, No Road, Black Midi, Squid, et cetera. Number two, are British rock bands truly perennially superior to American bands? Or is this just transatlantic envy? Let's start with you explaining what Windmill Scene bands are to me. Do you know this? You don't know either?

• 1:00:49Speaker 04

No, I'll look it up. I'll worry. I can just like.

• 1:00:51Yasi Salek?

Black Country, No Road, and Black Midi are bands that I am aware are bands and have heard the names, but I've actually not listened to them.

• 1:00:58Speaker 04

No, this is the thing. I keep seeing.

• 1:01:00Yasi Salek?

Not with no disrespect or shade, it's simply.

• 1:01:02Speaker 04

No, I've seen a few things and so, and I've seen people say, this sounds like Black Midi, but I like.

• 1:01:06Yasi Salek?

But then you're like, I don't know, I don't have the source material to. I love Idles. I really love High Viz. I really love Fontaines DC. I think England and Ireland are doing great things with guitar rock music.

• 1:01:19Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:01:20Yasi Salek?

Perhaps in some instances, better things than we're doing here as a, as a culture that celebrates guitar rock music, but I'm biased because I'm old and those were my bands. And to me, they're always going to be a bit more iconic than anything new.

• 1:01:36Speaker 04

  Yeah, it's personal.

• 1:01:37Yasi Salek?

  It's personal.

• 1:01:38Speaker 04

That's what it means to you.

• 1:01:39Yasi Salek?

You might be biased. Do you think British rock bands are perennially superior to American bands?

• 1:01:45Speaker 04

I do like. Say that a lot when I'm in a heated conversation.

• 1:01:51Yasi Salek?

That when you're having a few lagers.

• 1:01:54Speaker 04

Yeah, but I don't know if I really believe it or not. I think it's just that, yeah, it's like too personal to me that I can like name more that I like, probably. But also, I don't know, because it's like what influenced what?

• 1:02:07Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:08Speaker 04

Which are the things that I like.

• 1:02:08Yasi Salek?

  Chicken or the egg, really?

• 1:02:09Speaker 04

  So I don't really, I don't have a s- a strong stance on that.

• 1:02:13Yasi Salek?

Not to like be like, there would be no Rolling Stones and Beatles if there wasn't black rock music in America, so.

• 1:02:18Speaker 04

I mean, that's what I mean. We can always.

• 1:02:20Yasi Salek?

We'll have to go down that road.

• 1:02:22Speaker 04

Exactly. Yasi and Gang, love the show. My favorite British band from the nineties is Cornershop. I may be biased as an Indian American, but when I was born for the seventh time, as I thought he was saying it, sorry, I forgot that was the album title. When I was, when I was born for the, when I was born for the seventh time, has been the album I have gone to the most from that era. Where does Cornershop fit into the greater pop, Britpop scene and specifically where does the album fit into the nineties as a whole? Keep doing what you do. Pavan. Now, I remember the hit song.

• 1:02:54Yasi Salek?

I'm gonna need, yeah, Brim, uh, Brim full of Asha and, uh.

• 1:02:57Speaker 04

I had it, I, and but that, I think the one that got that song, even though it was like, you know, in the, in the Britpop, like sort of indie world.

• 1:03:08Yasi Salek?

  Was it?

• 1:03:09Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:03:09Yasi Salek?

Here was just an alternative song on MTV.

• 1:03:12Speaker 04

Let me just fact check myself though, because I think the one that was like big and like had a video and was like the hit was like a Fatboy Slim remix or something. It was like a, they'd made it like a bit dancy.

• 1:03:23Yasi Salek?

Just like when I came in to the offices today to do this podcast and there was an EDM remix of the phrase, how to save a life. That really changed my, I shazamed it, babe. I was like, I need to be able to return to this.

• 1:03:34Speaker 04

  That's crazy.

• 1:03:35Yasi Salek?

Yeah. We live in a time.

• 1:03:37Speaker 04

Yeah, you're just allowed to do anything, aren't you? Whether you like it or not, whether we like it or not.

• 1:03:41Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:42Speaker 04

But I don't know if I'm familiar enough with that record or like everything else they did.

• 1:03:48Yasi Salek?

Yeah, honestly, me neither. I'm so sorry. I just wanted, I honestly just wanted us to read it because I really like Brim full of Asha.

• 1:03:54Speaker 04

Yeah, that was definitely a hit.

• 1:03:55Yasi Salek?

And I trust you and I'm gonna look into the, I'm gonna look into that album.

• 1:03:59Speaker 04

Yeah, well, that's what I mean. I think if it's, yeah, it's like his favorite British band. So, and he was from the 90s, it must have been.

• 1:04:05Yasi Salek?

  Must have.

• 1:04:06Speaker 04

Must have had a big impact.

• 1:04:07Yasi Salek?

Yeah. All right. Next question's from Zola Anderson, who I met last night at my event that I did with Molly Lambert. And it was a very sweet and beautiful girl who came and said hello to me. So hello, Zola. Hi, Ossie. I adore you and the show. Been thinking about you a lot this past month and sending love. Thank you. A few tangents embedded in here, my apologies. I have tried listening to other band music history podcasts when somehow Bandplain hasn't covered a band I'm curious about. It's only probably happened twice. And asterisk feminism reentering my body. I literally turned them off because I can't stand their droning male voices reading off a piece of paper. We love to hear it. Finally, the tables have turned. Like, where's your craft, bro? You've spoiled me, Ossie. Side question, are you gonna do an episode on The Fall?

• 1:04:48Yasi Salek?

Please, I am 27 and need these history lessons so I can keep up in conversation with random music men and fight them on facts. The satisfaction I got from informing a 20 something seeney dude that this mortal coil was essentially a cover band was unparalleled. Although I did have to get another man to back me up because he didn't believe it. This alone was like, this, just this one parenthetical, I was like, I can retire. I've got, I have.

• 1:05:09Speaker 04

  I mean, that's like, that's a real education.

• 1:05:11Yasi Salek?

This is what I've done. A 27 year old girl wants me to cover The Fall.

• 1:05:15Speaker 04

To stand up against these know it all men.

• 1:05:18Yasi Salek?

Know it all men about this mortal coil. Like, I want a picture of this 20 something seeney dude's face. Anyway, I'm also a SoCal Anglophile. Hell, yeah. And I was wondering what are some of your favorite film representations of this time? Like, British ass 80s, 90s vibes. Obviously, there's 24 Hour Party people, but it doesn't have to be music specific. Also, I won't read this whole thing, but she sounds so cool. Her dad was a studio coordinator at Capitol in the 90s. And he moved to LA from Seattle and he hung out with Sean and the Happy Mondays when they recorded the album here. Also, Tad from the Young Fresh Fellows, an amazing band, introduced her parents. She says, this is the coolest girl alive.

• 1:05:51Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:05:51Yasi Salek?

I'm actually gonna talk about this, and I think it will have already come out when this mailbag episode comes out. I'm gonna talk about this exact question on the Big Picture Podcast, so tune in there. And that's where my answers will be. That's right. Cross promotion.

• 1:06:43Yasi Salek?

Bonjour, this is from Brian Anderson. Who is the biggest might-have-been band in the Britpop era? For me, it has to be The Laws. They release a perfect record and then have struggles and never do anything again. Also, is there a genre name for all the cool British bands that weren't Britpop, but were around during and after that time period? Bands like Doves, Travis, Ash, Superfairy Animals, British Seapower, et cetera. For the second part, I must tell you, genre is fake, so I don't know if there is a name and if you love it, it doesn't matter. And for the first part, yes, that is the biggest might-have-been band in the Britpop era. And tune in next week to hear more about them.

• 1:07:16Speaker 04

Edmund, hiya, I say, will the Brit season cover Brit bands in the 2000s? I'm thinking about the Libertines and Arctic Monkeys. Love your works. Good question.

• 1:07:26Yasi Salek?

Such a good question. I'll be honest with you guys, we have gotten many requests to cover the Arctic Monkeys. I feel a bit too close to the subject matter and I don't know if I can do it. I'm sorry, Matt.

• 1:07:40Speaker 04

No, I could see why. It's not like much of a story to tell, to be honest.

• 1:07:44Yasi Salek?

No, your high school teacher wrote a whole fanfic about it. There's a total...

• 1:07:48Speaker 04

Yeah, well, that's for me. You have to make stuff up. This is like...

• 1:07:51Yasi Salek?

You guys, you don't think you guys have a good story?

• 1:07:52Speaker 04

Well, I mean, I've enjoyed it. But like, don't you need like a tragedy and so a few like incidents? It's like...

• 1:08:00Yasi Salek?

Yeah, I guess you guys are pretty like, just good lads done good.

• 1:08:04Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:08:05Yasi Salek?

  You know, high school friends.

• 1:08:06Speaker 04

And I think we were just so like secretive that it's not, any of the shit that went down is...

• 1:08:11Yasi Salek?

Exactly, and then look, I would be out here just revealing secrets by accident.

• 1:08:14Speaker 04

The tell-all would have to be...

• 1:08:15Yasi Salek?

  Ruining friendships.

• 1:08:17Speaker 04

I'd have to be the expert on my own, but...

• 1:08:19Yasi Salek?

Exactly, that's what it would have to be. That's the only way we could do it.

• 1:08:21Speaker 04

And then it's like, the tell-all. Which I had at some point.

• 1:08:25Yasi Salek?

Yeah, for the Sheffield Star. But I am thinking about doing the Libertines because I do think that's a good story.

• 1:08:30Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:08:30Yasi Salek?

This is a good one. Hi, Yasi and guest, I'm guessing Rob, you guessed wrong. It's Matt Helders from the band The Arctic Monkeys. After investigating four British bands this season and plenty of other British artists in the past, I was wondering what your opinion on the dole is as how it compares to American band origins. Seems like so many great British bands feature the dole somewhere in their backstory, a safety net that contemporary artists over there can't take advantage of. Meanwhile, the analog for American artists often what? Started at university, worked a crappy job for years, signed to a record deal immediately. In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of the dole in terms of its ultimate effects on a musician's career and artistry? It's a great question. I have gone on record as saying I believe the dole was the Medici's of eighties and early nin- When did the dole end?

• 1:09:13Yasi Salek?

He was gone by the time you were out in the world, right?

• 1:09:17Speaker 04

  Like the-

• 1:09:18Yasi Salek?

Like you couldn't sign on to the dole. You could.

• 1:09:20Speaker 04

Yeah, you still could when I was, when I was starting to get a job, yeah.

• 1:09:23Yasi Salek?

Because it's gone now for sure.

• 1:09:25Speaker 04

Yeah, I think so. It's probably like a thing that they got rid of, you know, when they fucked everything else up. The rock and roll, we used to call it, rhyme and slang.

• 1:09:33Yasi Salek?

The rock and roll is the dole. He's on the rock and roll. I think it was crucial. I think it was crucial. There's very few bands that I have studied that-

• 1:09:41Speaker 04

  That weren't on the dole.

• 1:09:42Yasi Salek?

That weren't on the dole and that, that didn't allow them to nurture their creativity. I also think in America, it was similar, if not, it's not the dole, but you could, first of all, these bands are starting in like Ohio or Seattle where like your rent was forty bucks. You could work part-time at a restaurant.

• 1:10:03Speaker 04

Well, I also feel a little more places like that to work. Like when we were kids, it was like the McDonald's was like far away. Like it wasn't like there were all this shit everywhere, like a Starbucks everywhere.

• 1:10:11Yasi Salek?

You couldn't even work at the McDonald's, it was too far away.

• 1:10:13Speaker 04

They ended up making one, they ended up building one in our little bit.

• 1:10:17Yasi Salek?

  Huge day.

• 1:10:17Speaker 04

But now it's different, obviously, but there weren't a lot of things. It was, I remember it really well. But there weren't a lot of jobs that you could just go and get like easily, like-

• 1:10:25Yasi Salek?

  Then there aren't now.

• 1:10:26Speaker 04

No, I know, and that's the thing. But like the, and the dole was a big deal. And I thought, what was the official, they call it job seeker's allowance.

• 1:10:33Yasi Salek?

  Job seeker's allowance, yeah.

• 1:10:34Speaker 04

So you had to show that you were trying to get a job, obviously.

• 1:10:35Yasi Salek?

Yeah, right. Which is how unemployment is here. Yeah.

• 1:10:38Speaker 04

But yeah, it was, it was definitely still a thing when I was eligible, but I did get a job.

• 1:10:43Yasi Salek?

  Where were you working?

• 1:10:45Speaker 04

First I worked at, in like a clothes shop.

• 1:10:48Yasi Salek?

  You had a cool job.

• 1:10:49Speaker 04

It wasn't a cool clothes shop. And then I worked at like a gas company.

• 1:10:55Yasi Salek?

  Oh.

• 1:10:56Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:10:56Yasi Salek?

  By answering the phone?

• 1:10:57Speaker 04

  Yeah, but I, the worst.

• 1:11:00Yasi Salek?

  Helping people pay their bills?

• 1:11:01Speaker 04

Yeah, and like deciding whether people could get like a bit of free gas if they were like, I'm getting pissed and stuff.

• 1:11:06Yasi Salek?

  Are you like sixteen?

• 1:11:08Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:11:08Yasi Salek?

That's incredible. They hired sixteen year olds to help people pay their bills.

• 1:11:12Speaker 04

No, I probably, yeah, I was sixteen at the first job, probably like seventeen or eighteen, yeah.

• 1:11:16Yasi Salek?

  Incredible.

• 1:11:17Speaker 04

And I remember I got like all the way through the training and then like the first week and then we got signed and I left. And I remember reading, I had like an enemy with a review of like one of our shows in at the place.

• 1:11:27Yasi Salek?

  At the call center?

• 1:11:27Speaker 04

Talking to these people who like, I was like, fuck this, I gotta go. And I went.

• 1:11:32Yasi Salek?

You, you're on the phone, you're like, my band is in the enemy, okay, I have to go.

• 1:11:36Speaker 04

I don't have to deal with your problems anymore. I did, I definitely took advantage of some government benefits.

• 1:11:42Yasi Salek?

Yeah, yeah. Yeah, and I just, I just think here, things like rent used to be.

• 1:11:46Speaker 04

  Well, that's the thing, yeah.

• 1:11:47Yasi Salek?

Fantastically low and many, even, I'll say even LA and places, like it just, rent was just so much cheaper.

• 1:11:53Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:11:53Yasi Salek?

You could work just a part-time job and live with five roommates and make a band.

• 1:11:57Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:11:58Yasi Salek?

And that's what people did. And that's not so much what you can do anymore.

• 1:12:01Speaker 04

  No, it's like.

• 1:12:02Yasi Salek?

There's a really long question that is super sweet and nice, but we're not going to read it for time. From Lindishney, thank you for all your nice things. But the question within it is, you mentioned a season, the grunge season, that sometime a while back, you were in Seattle with Warpaint. Did I hear that right? I was late to the party, but I've been fully obsessed with Warpaint for close to a decade and I think they're the most underrated, one of the under, most underrated bands and most alchemical live experiences around. Yes. Thank you for asking.

• 1:12:28Speaker 04

  The answer is yes.

• 1:12:29Yasi Salek?

  We love Warpaint.

• 1:12:30Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:12:30Yasi Salek?

And I did, uh, when I was in my mid twenties, I was probably twenty-six or something. So we were friends, I was, we would still, I would still call them friends, they're lovely girls. But I was more friends with a band called The Moon Rats, who doesn't exist anymore, and they were on tour together. And this is just, I think, before Warpaint signed with Rough Trade. And it was just like a west coast tour and it was, I think I'd just gone through a breakup. This has happened to me a couple of times and my friend was like, just come on tour. And I was like, okay. And I had the best time. I was just like really drunk and on mushrooms, listening to like Warpaint every night. It was wonderful. There's the answer to your question. There's a question that I'm not going to answer, but I just want to read it because it's funny. It says, are there any episodes that actually made you hate a band? Like listening to their whole discography and you just can't stand them anymore.

• 1:13:12Yasi Salek?

And I don't like to be negative on this show, but I think if you listen back, you can kind of guess which ones are which.

• 1:13:18Speaker 04

John Tiberius says, hey, big fan of the pod. I feel like this might have been asked or answered a million times, but I only started listening to the pod a few months ago. Well, there's your first problem. But what kind of things do you consider when picking bands to explain? Is it simply, yes, he thinks a band is sick and that's all the deliberation needed? Or are there external factors, i.e. the Britpop series coinciding with Oasis reunion? Keep on explaining. I consider myself to be pretty knowledgeable about band stuff, but I always learn cool new facts and stories from your episodes.

• 1:13:51Yasi Salek?

Thank you, John. It's a complex equation that involves, I'd like to keep my employment at theringer.com. So I need to get those streams. So I can't stew a bunch of Saint Etienne's. But yes, it does kind of boil down to this is a monarchy. I am the queen of England and I choose who I cover for the most part. No one tells me what to do, except for my beautiful bosses, who I love and respect very much, and I hope to keep my job.

• 1:14:20Speaker 04

But sort of going back to the question you didn't want to answer, it's not always.

• 1:14:24Yasi Salek?

It's not always something that I love.

• 1:14:26Speaker 04

Love song and I do this about them.

• 1:14:28Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:29Speaker 04

I mean, yeah, you shouldn't be either.

• 1:14:31Yasi Salek?

  No, I don't think it's all.

• 1:14:32Speaker 04

  It's not about you.

• 1:14:33Yasi Salek?

  It's about, it's subjective.

• 1:14:34Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:14:35Yasi Salek?

Obviously people love those bands. There's a reason that they would be big enough to be covered within. And just about the Britpop series coinciding with Oasis reunion, I actually planned this season well before they announced the reunion. And I am not going to say that I had a played a part, had a hand in it.

• 1:14:50Speaker 04

Yeah, look at it the other way around, John.

• 1:14:51Yasi Salek?

But I am a bit of a witch, so. This is from Ramona Barton. Hi, Yasi, and I would like you to answer too. My question is unrelated to British people. My bad. I was wondering what your top three favorite foods to cook are. I always enjoy your Instagram cooking stories. I don't do those anymore. I should. And I'm seeking recipe info from cool people rather than the hell that is Instagram reels. Is, if three is too many, if you could just say one, that would be cool. Thank you. That's generous. Also, thank you for making this pod. I was a staunch podcast hater my whole life until I found bands playing. Thank you. Lately, as you know, I'm a health and wellness girly. I've been really into cooking oxtail stew, which is. Giving British.

• 1:15:27Speaker 04

Oxtail soup, big time in England, yeah.

• 1:15:29Yasi Salek?

And it's just, I get a beautiful cuts of oxtail from my guy at the farmer's market, grass fed. And it's just oxtail, carrots, potatoes, red wine and broth.

• 1:15:42Speaker 04

Great for a rainy day like today.

• 1:15:44Yasi Salek?

Great for a rainy day. You, you know, you fucking slap that shit on there for six hours.

• 1:15:50Speaker 04

  Yeah, I love that.

• 1:15:50Yasi Salek?

It becomes so hearty and gelatinous from the collagen from the oxtail. It's so good for you. Highly recommend. You can just Google oxtail stew recipe.

• 1:16:02Speaker 04

That is definitely an English thing. I don't make anything really. I mean, I could. I'll tell you what I'm good at.

• 1:16:07Yasi Salek?

  Yeah, cheese toastie.

• 1:16:08Speaker 04

Yeah, but I can follow a recipe. I just not have much imagination for cooking.

• 1:16:11Yasi Salek?

  Yeah, that's why.

• 1:16:11Speaker 04

Like I, the skills to follow instruction are there, but I never inspired to be like, oh, I'll just like whip up a casserole.

• 1:16:18Yasi Salek?

No, I mean, I follow recipes. Sometimes I like, after I've made the recipe eight times, then I start to like play around.

• 1:16:23Speaker 04

  Improvise a little bit.

• 1:16:24Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 1:16:24Speaker 04

But my lovely wife does most of the heavy lifting when it comes to cooking and she's good at it too. And you mentioned broth. Now she'll be making her own broth.

• 1:16:33Yasi Salek?

  Sure, of course.

• 1:16:34Speaker 04

  That's the best way.

• 1:16:35Yasi Salek?

You can't be making oxtail stew with not.

• 1:16:37Speaker 04

  And.

• 1:16:38Yasi Salek?

  Store bought broth.

• 1:16:38Speaker 04

This morning for me and the kid, she made like a savory porridge. We're talking like these protein oats first of all. I don't even know how you do that. Cause like, oh, oats.

• 1:16:47Yasi Salek?

  Science is crazy, yeah.

• 1:16:49Speaker 04

With the homemade broth, better like creamy egg, like goodness in there. That was like, I don't want sweet things for breakfast ever. So this was like ideal for me. So that was today's, today's meal.

• 1:17:01Yasi Salek?

  I love that.

• 1:17:02Speaker 04

Yeah, I do. I would say I'd know when I see you like your cooking things on Instagram, it always makes me hungry. I was like, oh, that's good.

• 1:17:07Yasi Salek?

Thank you. Perhaps I have a future in.

• 1:17:09Speaker 04

I've got like so many things saved on my phone as if I'm gonna actually cook them one day.

• 1:17:13Yasi Salek?

You can just show them to a man.

• 1:17:14Speaker 04

I know, just go like, open a collaborative note and just be like, when you get a sec.

• 1:17:18Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:18Speaker 04

I'll go and get the ingredients. That's the deal.

• 1:17:20Yasi Salek?

I just wanted to further point out that, that British men watching and listening, you too could be like Matt, being tended to by a beautiful American woman, making you homemade broth.

• 1:17:32Speaker 04

This is all just propaganda for you.

• 1:17:33Yasi Salek?

That's right. We're all just trying to get me out to my dream.

• 1:17:36Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:17:37Yasi Salek?

I like to make my own broth and I've been incorporating chicken feet.

• 1:17:41Speaker 04

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:17:42Yasi Salek?

People don't like it when I show that on Instagram.

• 1:17:44Speaker 04

  Just the visual of it.

• 1:17:45Yasi Salek?

It has nails. It's a real intense situation. Yeah.

• 1:17:49Speaker 04

  Greg McClure could be Scottish.

• 1:17:51Yasi Salek?

  Send a photo.

• 1:17:54Speaker 04

Says, hello, yes, and Rob, producer Justin, wrong and wrong again.

• 1:17:59Yasi Salek?

  Nice try, Josh.

• 1:18:00Speaker 04

I wanted to let you know that I read Clarice Lyspector.

• 1:18:03Yasi Salek?

  Lyspector.

• 1:18:03Speaker 04

Lyspecters and A Printership or The Book of Pleasures on your recommendation and enjoyed it immensely. In the spirit of the eventual bands playing book club, what fiction have you been drawn to in the past 12 months? Anything you've been meaning to read is the P O box still accepting items. Rob, if you are there, well, he's not. Are there any Harville classics you want to pass on to the, to your children? As a member of your Gen Z listenership, if the classification matters at all, I always enjoy hearing you talk about bands in long form. You are podcast artists. The vocal fry and Midwestern accent are your paintbrushes. Waiting for the big pick crossover episode about Hal Hartley.

• 1:18:48Speaker 04

  Sincerely, Greg McClure.

• 1:18:50Yasi Salek?

Thanks, Greg. You packed a lot in there. I love books.

• 1:18:54Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:18:55Yasi Salek?

When I have the chance to read something that is not a music book, I am very happy. The last thing I read that I loved was called Do the Windows Open? I had to look in my website with it. It shall not be named. It's a book of short stories by Julie Hecht. Highly recommend. Very good. The P O box is still open for the next month and a half, after which I will cancel it because it's phenomenally expensive.

• 1:19:15Speaker 04

Does it really? And people send you books?

• 1:19:17Yasi Salek?

They have, have done. They have done.

• 1:19:19Speaker 04

I mean, it's obviously various things, but this obviously person, obviously.

• 1:19:21Yasi Salek?

Sent me some really wonderful things and thank you so much to everyone that sent something and it's been very lovely. Are you, you big fiction reader?

• 1:19:28Speaker 04

Yeah, I read, I'm currently reading something that I really like and I just read, what's it called?

• 1:19:33Yasi Salek?

  Twilight.

• 1:19:34Speaker 04

Yes, exactly. I'm on the third one. I read Blue Ruin by Harry Kuns Drew.

• 1:19:41Yasi Salek?

What kind of book is that?

• 1:19:42Speaker 04

It's a novel and it's interesting because it's, it's like only, well, it's the first book I've read that like took place during like the pandemic.

• 1:19:50Yasi Salek?

Oh, taste place during the pandemic. Interesting.

• 1:19:53Speaker 04

It's like a door dash driver or whatever. And during the pandemic and he goes to deliver this, whatever, he's delivering groceries and it's his ex-girlfriend who is now living with his ex-art partner when he was in college. And he didn't know because they've just been like estranged for a while. And then it's just like a lot of chaos around this painting. That's a really like bad description of it.

• 1:20:12Yasi Salek?

  You're midway through.

• 1:20:13Speaker 04

  No, I've read that one.

• 1:20:14Yasi Salek?

Oh, you've finished it. And you would recommend it to others.

• 1:20:16Speaker 04

  I would recommend that.

• 1:20:17Yasi Salek?

Okay, great. Matt and Yossi, book club.

• 1:20:20Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:20:21Yasi Salek?

It's it's happened. All right, we're gonna do the last question. Pedro Oriana, sorry if I said it wrong. Hi, Yossi. When did Britpop die? The press always says when the Spice Girls got huge, but I always say that was the coma. And the garage rock band revival of two thousand one ended it. Loyal band planner, Pedro. Is the garage rock band revival of two thousand one in the room with us right now? Actually, literally kind of is, right?

• 1:20:48Speaker 04

Yeah, but I think about that timeline. And we were so, I mean, it was happening, but it wasn't like British bands necessarily that we were like.

• 1:20:55Yasi Salek?

  It was the Strokes.

• 1:20:57Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:20:57Yasi Salek?

I think he's kind of, I think he's more, I mean, you guys were kind of part of it.

• 1:21:00Speaker 04

Yeah, but I was still like at school in two thousand one.

• 1:21:02Yasi Salek?

Yeah, you joined, you joined in.

• 1:21:04Speaker 04

  I was fifteen years old.

• 1:21:05Yasi Salek?

Later, like two, two years, two years later.

• 1:21:08Speaker 04

Had it already been revived, I suppose. And then I was like, yeah.

• 1:21:11Yasi Salek?

That's an interesting take on it. I still kind of do think it was famously nineteen ninety seven. I think it was Be Here Now.

• 1:21:18Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:21:19Yasi Salek?

Noel Gallagher going to ten Downing in his fuck ass blazer and his stupid haircut. The Spice Girls movie. Honestly, Robbie Williams, kind of like the the big rise of Robbie Williams, I think, was a contribution.

• 1:21:32Speaker 04

Separated him from that as well.

• 1:21:33Yasi Salek?

Yeah. I mean, you lived it. Like, what was going on from ninety seven to two thousand in England with music? Like, obviously, people still cared about Oasis, but they weren't the, they weren't in their imperial phase anymore.

• 1:21:47Speaker 04

No, and because I was at the age that like the first two Oasis records were like what my brother had bought.

• 1:21:53Yasi Salek?

  Right.

• 1:21:53Speaker 04

And he was like four years older than me. And I was like, listening to his music. So like, a lot of it pulled blow on Oasis were like me listening to his music.

• 1:21:59Yasi Salek?

  Totally.

• 1:21:59Speaker 04

So by the time I was like buying my own stuff, it was Be Here Now. So it was like, I remember like queuing up to get it on the day it opened, like it came out.

• 1:22:06Yasi Salek?

It's much better than people say, I must say.

• 1:22:08Speaker 04

I had a soft spot for it, but probably for that reason, just because it was like the experience of buying this record. And it was like, they'd like put it out on a Thursday and it still went to number one. Like they did all these like.

• 1:22:17Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 1:22:18Speaker 04

Interesting things around it. That obviously wasn't their peak. And it wasn't like the time that they were like the most.

• 1:22:24Yasi Salek?

No, it was the decline of.

• 1:22:25Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:22:25Yasi Salek?

And if Oasis in decline, Britpop is in decline because they were the sort of front runners, I think.

• 1:22:30Speaker 04

So I don't really know. I can't really like say what like what was, what was happening in ninety eight, ninety nine that like I can. Remember musically.

• 1:22:37Yasi Salek?

  I mean.

• 1:22:37Speaker 04

And I think a lot of it was catching up with stuff as well when I was a kid.

• 1:22:40Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 1:22:40Speaker 04

Listening to stuff that I hadn't listened to yet.

• 1:22:42Yasi Salek?

Over here it was nu metal also.

• 1:22:44Speaker 04

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:22:44Yasi Salek?

  Almost more than.

• 1:22:45Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:22:46Yasi Salek?

  You know.

• 1:22:46Speaker 04

That's what happened because that was the danger we were in starting a band.

• 1:22:52Yasi Salek?

  That was the.

• 1:22:54Speaker 04

Well, like being people who liked rap music, but then deciding to start a rock band.

• 1:22:58Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 1:22:58Speaker 04

  Can be.

• 1:22:59Yasi Salek?

It it got many of it got many, many white men.

• 1:23:02Speaker 04

  It can.

• 1:23:02Yasi Salek?

It did grab many, many white men.

• 1:23:03Speaker 04

It was a conscious decision not to, because there's a little bit of inside info about me.

• 1:23:09Yasi Salek?

  You're a rapper.

• 1:23:10Speaker 04

No, but I did have decks, like DJ, like vinyl.

• 1:23:15Yasi Salek?

  I knew this about you.

• 1:23:15Speaker 04

And I'd be like a bedroom DJ and I'd DJ for my brother's friends and all that. And it wasn't just hip hop, but I liked it and I liked like learning all the, you know.

• 1:23:23Yasi Salek?

  Did you have a tracksuit?

• 1:23:24Speaker 04

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:23:25Yasi Salek?

  Yeah, sure.

• 1:23:26Speaker 04

Probably got more now, to be honest. I think I like leaned into that later in life. But I'd be like, learn how to scratch and do all that stuff and be like, but was very conscious of the fact that if these things cross over, we're in danger.

• 1:23:37Yasi Salek?

You're not doing Linkin Park is what you're saying.

• 1:23:38Speaker 04

  Exactly, yeah. Neither are you.

• 1:23:42Speaker 04

Stand by on that actually. But I instead kept those two things very separate. So it was that. And then I started playing drums with the rhythmical knowledge I'd probably gained from like learning how to be a DJ.

• 1:23:54Yasi Salek?

  It helped you.

• 1:23:55Speaker 04

  Separated the two.

• 1:23:56Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:56Speaker 04

That's the right thing to do.

• 1:23:57Yasi Salek?

Church and state. Yeah. Well, you know, I don't know if I told you this, and I know you probably didn't listen to the seventh hour of the band's plan on Oasis, but you know, Liam Gallagher was famously a break dancer before Oasis. And a graffiti artist.

• 1:24:09Speaker 04

Dress was like one a little bit still.

• 1:24:10Yasi Salek?

He was like the same. Yeah. Also, let's not forget, I'm sure Coldplay, the year two thousand.

• 1:24:17Speaker 04

  Oh.

• 1:24:17Yasi Salek?

  Contributed.

• 1:24:18Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:24:19Yasi Salek?

To the putting some nails in the coffin.

• 1:24:21Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:24:22Yasi Salek?

As you guys know, I stan Coldplay. So.

• 1:24:25Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:24:26Yasi Salek?

Well, I guess it's parachutes. That's the first one. Yeah.

• 1:24:29Speaker 04

  Yeah, because I was.

• 1:24:30Yasi Salek?

  Don't panic.

• 1:24:31Speaker 04

I went to college, like our version of college, when that album came out, because I had to record someone doing a cover of one of that. What's the really short song on that? That's parachutes in it. Like, is that the title song? It's like one.

• 1:24:44Yasi Salek?

  Forty six seconds.

• 1:24:45Speaker 04

Yeah. So I I liked that song, though.

• 1:24:48Yasi Salek?

Where is this cover? Can we find it?

• 1:24:50Speaker 04

And it's on like a one CD, one burned CD somewhere in my mom's like attic or something. And I

• 1:24:56Yasi Salek?

The Sheffield Star is gonna knock on the door tomorrow.

• 1:24:59Speaker 04

And to seize this. And I decided that I wanted to do that song, but it didn't meet the criteria of like whatever project we're doing. So I got him to just do it three times in a row because it had to be at least like a minute long. And I was like, well, this is the song I want to do. And he was like, okay.

• 1:25:12Yasi Salek?

And we can't go any further from there, I don't think. That's the best place to end is you doing parachutes by Coldplay in forty six seconds. You're just singing.

• 1:25:21Speaker 04

No, I record, I didn't, because I didn't learn music properly. I learned how to like record like the

• 1:25:27Yasi Salek?

Oh, you were an engineer. Okay.

• 1:25:28Speaker 04

I just like, I wanted to be involved, but I didn't play an instrument yet. So I just had to like blag my way onto this course.

• 1:25:34Yasi Salek?

You guys, just keep in mind.

• 1:25:36Speaker 04

All about me for a minute and all these exclusives.

• 1:25:38Yasi Salek?

Keep in mind that Matt Helders thought he was just gonna be a third tier engineer and then became the preeminent rock drummer of our time. You can do anything if you put your mind to it. And you separate hip hop from rock music.

• 1:25:52Speaker 04

  That's the main thing.

• 1:25:53Yasi Salek?

Thank you, Matt Helders, so much.

• 1:25:55Speaker 04

  Thank you for having me.

• 1:25:56Yasi Salek?

  Being my go to.

• 1:25:58Speaker 04

  Anytime.

• 1:25:59Yasi Salek?

Really my only British friend that I'm close enough to, to make demands upon. And I appreciate it, to be honest. I did, I did bring you Yorkshire tea.

• 1:26:06Speaker 04

Feel by Yorkshire tea, that's all I really need.

• 1:26:08Yasi Salek?

You can't have the Jaffa cakes, I'm sorry, but I did bring you Monster Munch and a salt and vins. And thank you for all your questions and for listening and regular Bands Play episodes. We'll be back starting next week, so tune in.
