Mmm, Bobby. We've added some merch from when Bobby didn't, wasn't helping me figure out how to talk to him or whatever. We have a Bobby collab that is loose now on Theovonstore.com. You can check it out. And we sprinkled in some other new items and restocked some old classics. Again, it's Theovonstore.com and uh, thanks so much for your support. Mover. Today's guest is our young friend from Lanesboro, Minnesota. Uh, he's Amish. He's an Amish. He's an Amish person and he's on Rum Springer right now. And we're excited to learn about uh, what it means to be Amish and what it's like and how things are going for him today.

• 1:13Theo Von?

Today's guest is Amish and his name is Timothy.

• 1:36Theo Von?

Alright, sitting here with an Amish dude, basically.

• 1:39Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:40Theo Von?

  Um, and you're 100% Amish?

• 1:42Speaker 02

100% Amish, born and raised. I can speak Pennsylvania Dutch, still Amish and still, still living at home.

• 1:49Theo Von?

  Pennsylvania Dutch, it's called?

• 1:50Speaker 02

Yeah, so Pennsylvania Dutch is like a, it's like a dialect of German. It's, it's quite a bit of different from German, but.

• 1:57Theo Von?

It's quite a bit of different from German, you said?

• 1:59Speaker 02

Yeah, but it's a dialect from it and so if someone would be talking like, like German, you can kind of understand them, but like. Most of the words you can.

• 2:10Theo Von?

  Okay.

• 2:11Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 2:11Theo Von?

So do people do like, would your parents speak German and Pennsylvania Dutch?

• 2:14Speaker 02

No, just Pennsylvania Dutch and English.

• 2:17Theo Von?

And would your grandparents possibly speak German or your great grandparents?

• 2:20Speaker 02

Nope, they they're all Pennsylvania Dutch, so.

• 2:23Theo Von?

Okay, understood, but it's kind of a branch of it's a lot of the people there have German lineage.

• 2:28Speaker 02

Yeah, they do, like, I think every every Amish is like Swiss German because most of them came from that area.

• 2:36Theo Von?

  Mm hmm.

• 2:36Speaker 02

And funny thing is, in school, like on Fridays, we we learn like, so that's basically the day where we we read German, spell German. And and also every morning in school, we also sing like three hymns out of a, it'd be a little book with like red pages. Where we're singing German hymns out of now. The funny thing is like, I can kind of read German and I can spell German, but I do not understand like like the German that I'm reading and spelling. Well, I some of it I can, but most of it I can't.

• 3:09Theo Von?

So you can comprehend a little bit, but you couldn't really then recite it?

• 3:13Speaker 02

Yeah, well, because sometimes for like Christmas and stuff, we had to like, there's there's also a green German book, which when you're in lower grades, like fifth and under, you read out of that where there's like big like bigger paragraphs in the back where it's all German and sometimes for like well, most every time, actually, for Christmas and stuff, we had to learn, memorize all of those and I guess I wa- I wasn't the greatest because I I kind of, I guess, lost interest for it if I if I didn't understand it, I guess.

• 3:44Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 3:45Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 3:46Theo Von?

Yeah, that's probably ADD or whatever. Do they have ADD in the Amish community?

• 3:49Speaker 02

So, uh, I don't even, what do you know, what is ADD? I'm not even quite sure.

• 3:54Theo Von?

Oh, wow, ADD, it's like, let me think, hmm.

• 3:59Theo Von?

You ever have that feeling like when somebody's tickling you or whatever kinda?

• 4:02Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 4:03Theo Von?

And you're like, you just can't even handle it?

• 4:05Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 4:06Theo Von?

It's like that feeling, but it's like in your brain kinda when you're trying to pay attention. So it's like your, your paying attention doesn't work, you know?

• 4:13Speaker 02

Oh, ah, no, I don't think, I don't think anyone has ADD that I know of. I hope not, cuz that, that would be too fun to have.

• 4:22Theo Von?

Oh yeah, I think it's like, yeah, you get to change your mind without even doing it, you know?

• 4:26Speaker 02

So if you drive a car, if you have ADD, so can you focus on the road? Or you're like looking over to the ditch and then this car and the guy in the, like the passenger seat?

• 4:35Theo Von?

I think it gets a little bit testy for some people, like it's too much, you know? Yeah, pull that up. Do the Amish have ADD? Pull that up. Let's get a gander at that. That's a great question.

• 4:44Speaker 02

Yeah. I've never heard of ADD before.

• 4:47Theo Von?

Then you must not have it, brother.

• 4:49Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 4:50Theo Von?

The Amish do experience ADD, but reported rates are noticeably lower than in the general population. And diagnosis practices may differ significantly due to cultural and lifestyle factors. Wow, that's pretty fascinating. Um, when you're born in Amish country, are you born at a hospital? Are you born at home? What's it like?

• 5:09Speaker 02

So that varies a lot too. Over the last probably fifteen, ten, fifteen years, a lot more have been born in a hospital. I know there's some people in our community, all of them were born at home. Half of them were born at home. And then also some were born in a hospital. Now me and my, all my brothers, we were all born in the hospital, so. So it all varies, varies from family to family most of the time.

• 5:33Theo Von?

Um, are you allowed to use like municipalities, like a hospital and like a public park and those sorts of things? Like where does the line differ between if you're Amish and you're just straight up supposed to be at the house? You know, like using chalk and just eating butter, you know, out of each other's hats? And then the line where you're supposed to be able to like go to public parks and go to like non-Amish events and stuff?

• 5:54Speaker 02

Oh, so like, like me going to your concert, like that would, that would not be like that, keep, keep that on the, down low? But some Amish, I know some Amish, they go to like Def Leppard concerts and when they're like around my age. You know, like eight eighties rock, Amish, like, Amish that like party and stuff, they they like eighties rock. And then I don't know, I'm not sure how you call the music, but it really bumps when you turn it all the way up.

• 6:19Theo Von?

  That eighties rock?

• 6:20Speaker 02

No, it's like some, I wonder if like, it's like, when, it's like, like boom, boom, boom.

• 6:25Theo Von?

Is it kind of darker artist, do the dark, do the artists?

• 6:29Speaker 02

Not, you mean like, like the Suicide Boys or?

• 6:31Theo Von?

  Oh, Suicide Boys are great.

• 6:33Speaker 02

It's not the Suicide Boys, it's more like, like David Guetta, like, uh, I think I said that.

• 6:37Theo Von?

  David Guetta?

• 6:38Speaker 02

  Guetta, yeah.

• 6:39Theo Von?

Oh, I see what you're saying. Oh, like EDM, house, that sort of stuff.

• 6:42Speaker 02

I I don't never know, know what you call it, but yeah, if you turn that stuff all the way up, it really shakes something up, like. If you, if you have like, a big like stereo system in like a, in like a building, that building starts shaking. So that's pretty cool.

• 6:56Theo Von?

And the Amish, they really feel that, you can feel, really feel your barn raised when you hear that, huh?

• 7:00Speaker 02

Oh, yeah, but like, that stuff we only do in the weekends, that that stuff is kind of like, nah.

• 7:05Theo Von?

  That's secret.

• 7:06Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 7:07Theo Von?

  Hell, yeah.

• 7:08Speaker 02

  So.

• 7:08Theo Von?

Do the Amish listen to Morgan Wallen ever or no?

• 7:11Speaker 02

Uh, yeah, dude, I have a buddy, actually my coworker, Atlee, he, he loves Morgan Wallen, and he's, he's in Room Springer too, so. He, he wants to go to his concert one time, so that, that would be fun, you know? I thought your concert was pretty cool too, the music that they played in the beginning.

• 7:26Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 7:26Speaker 02

I've never really heard that music before, but I was like, it was like, I was chamoing out to it, and it was really, really fun.

• 7:33Theo Von?

Thank you, dude, yeah. We play, um, a lot of times at our shows, there I am right there with your hat you brought to me, that was in Seattle. Um, in the beginning of the shows, we play a band, it's called New Orleans Jazz Vipers.

• 7:44Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 7:45Theo Von?

And it's just like some good kind of jazz, New Orleansian music. I think it puts people in a mode of like, they're gonna, you know, some type of artistic, like, brain space instead of just some, like, music you hear all the time, you know?

• 7:58Speaker 02

Yeah, that's like, I was, I was kind of surprised, like, or not really surprised, but I never really, I never really heard that music before.

• 8:06Theo Von?

Yeah, it's great, man. That's a great band. I've, I've, uh, I happened upon them in New Orleans a while back, and ever since then, I've just enjoyed listening to them.

• 8:13Speaker 02

Yeah, so that's their horns and stuff?

• 8:15Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 8:16Speaker 02

Wow, and that's, that's what makes all the, like, the great sounds.

• 8:19Theo Von?

Yeah, they do a great job. Do you guys have instruments, um, in, uh, in your Amish village? Is it called a village?

• 8:28Speaker 02

So uh it be considered a district. A district would be like different parts of church. Cause there can be one big community, but there can be like four to 12 different districts of like the church where the rules are like a little bit different here and there. But like mostly be called a uh a community.

• 8:48Theo Von?

  A community.

• 8:48Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 8:49Theo Von?

So the areas you live in kind of delineate where you go to church at?

• 8:52Speaker 02

  Yeah, kinda or yeah.

• 8:54Theo Von?

Can you go to any church or if you live in a certain area, you kind of go to a certain church? Cause it's close.

• 8:58Speaker 02

So in the area, you always, if Dhammich move somewhere, it's usually for a certain church, a certain area and we don't have church like houses and stuff like not like some I seen like, like really big churches. They were like, they went almost like up to the sky and stuff.

• 9:14Theo Von?

Yeah, they got some churches that are trying to do a lot. They're like, do you need all that?

• 9:19Speaker 02

Yeah, like those things are really high. So all of our church happens at uh at our homes like.

• 9:26Theo Von?

  Oh.

• 9:27Speaker 02

Yeah. So like, so we take turns taking church. So.

• 9:31Theo Von?

So different weekends, different uh families will take church?

• 9:34Speaker 02

Yeah. And another thing that Dhammich do is uh we have church every other weekend. So so how it works is church here and then that gives them enough time to, you know, move church to the next place. And you have to pick up all the books, pick up all the benches and then move it over to your place. You also have to make all the food and then people, people come and help you.

• 9:58Theo Von?

I see. So it's part of the culture is like, it's kind of exciting when you get to have church at your place, cause then everybody's coming there.

• 10:03Speaker 02

Yeah, well, it it it can be, but also it's a bit of like, oh, man, churches at our place, we gotta get ready.

• 10:10Theo Von?

  Oh, we gotta clean up.

• 10:11Speaker 02

Yeah, you gotta clean up, get ready.

• 10:13Theo Von?

  Be on our best behavior.

• 10:14Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 10:15Theo Von?

  Trim the cat.

• 10:16Speaker 02

Trim the cat. Well, our cats actually stay in the barn, cause Dhammich don't really have cats in in the house. Dude, our cats, they're like self sufficient. They're kind of Dhammich too. But like we put dog food there. I think they they might, they might sneak a little bit of that.

• 10:29Theo Von?

I could see some of them sneaking a little.

• 10:30Speaker 02

But sometimes I see cats coming up the pasture. They got like a chipmunk or a bird. I don't think they're, I don't think they're big enough or fast enough to catch a squirrel.

• 10:40Theo Von?

I am alarmed at uh how many not uh how many regular people. What do you call regular people, non Amish or do you?

• 10:47Speaker 02

So if we're if we're talking English, we call regular people uh English people.

• 10:51Theo Von?

  Okay.

• 10:51Speaker 02

But if you're talking in Pennsylvania Dutch, if you want a literal transition translation of it. It's we call them ho he let, which a literal translation is high people. But what it means, ho he let, what that means is like.

• 11:05Theo Von?

People that are allowed to get high.

• 11:06Speaker 02

That are non Amish. But we have like a neighbor, that guy's from like Australia, like I think it's called Land Down Under stuff like.

• 11:14Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 11:14Speaker 02

Basically where all the kangaroos live.

• 11:16Theo Von?

Oh yeah, there's kangaroos, sharks, there's definitely, there's just people that'll drink beer. There's a couple of Down Center guys down there who drink beer out of the oven.

• 11:25Speaker 02

That's crazy. And I even saw some guys like they they drink, they take off their shoe and they like pour like. Like some stuff in their shoe and drink it right out of.

• 11:34Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 11:35Speaker 02

It must have special feet or something.

• 11:37Theo Von?

Yeah, I think they must have uh. Look at these guys right here and they're Australian.

• 11:42Speaker 02

Oh, wow, what are they doing?

• 11:45Theo Von?

Look at this, he pulls a hot beer right out of the oven.

• 11:47Speaker 02

  Whoa, that's pretty cool.

• 11:49Theo Von?

And he starts chugging it at one point, he doesn't care.

• 11:52Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 11:52Theo Von?

  But these guys are Australian.

• 11:53Speaker 02

  Oh, wow.

• 11:55Theo Von?

  So they're they're, you know.

• 11:56Speaker 02

  They're a bit shorter too.

• 11:57Theo Von?

Yeah, a lot of rugby head to head. That'll keep your spine down.

• 12:01Speaker 02

Yeah, especially if you're like. I thought if you beat upside down like on the bottom side of the world, your your spine would like go.

• 12:09Theo Von?

  Not these guys.

• 12:10Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 12:10Theo Von?

I think they missed a uh they missed a column dude, L5S nun dude, these guys missed something.

• 12:16Speaker 02

  Yeah, something like that.

• 12:17Theo Von?

Um so non Amish people, you call them ho ho?

• 12:20Speaker 02

  Ho he let.

• 12:21Theo Von?

  Ho he lers.

• 12:22Speaker 02

  Ho he let.

• 12:23Theo Von?

  Ho he la.

• 12:24Speaker 02

There you go. You're almost Amish now.

• 12:26Theo Von?

  Oh, welcome.

• 12:27Speaker 02

  Yeah, you're you're welcome.

• 12:28Theo Von?

It's not offensive though, ho he la.

• 12:30Speaker 02

No, no, no, not at all. That's that's a it's a. It's not a, like, Damish don't see it as offensive, it's, it's just a, a term to describe something. Like, our horses, you know, some are standard bred, you know, and then some are brown, some are black. We even have some, like, like, white horses with, like, black spots on them.

• 12:48Theo Von?

Oh, yeah, we're getting a lot of that, outside of Atlanta, we get a lot of that.

• 12:51Speaker 02

  Yeah, where's Atlanta?

• 12:53Theo Von?

Uh, Atlanta, have you heard of it?

• 12:55Speaker 02

  Oh, Atlanta, like, Georgia?

• 12:57Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 12:57Speaker 02

Okay, yeah, I've heard of it, I've never been there, I, I heard they, like, that's close to where, like, the Dukes of Hazzard were made, I think.

• 13:04Theo Von?

Yeah, I think it is, actually, I love the Dukes of Hazzard.

• 13:06Speaker 02

I do, too, yeah, I used to have a, the DVD player, I don't have it anymore, I used to have a little DVD player.

• 13:12Theo Von?

  Really?

• 13:13Speaker 02

And then, yeah, I watched a little bit of Dukes of Hazzard. But the, the only bad part was, the DVD player, it was, it was before I had a battery and stuff, that, I had to go charge it somewhere else. And, just before I had a bat, like, all prepared, you know, that way I don't run out of power. I used to watch, I watched them a lot, cause, us Amish, we have, the ones that are in Roemspringa, we have, like, uh, we have DVDs and stuff, the, my coworker, Grattly, he's, he's pretty, he's pretty stacked when it comes to DVDs, cause he's got, like, like, a drawer full of, like, all kinds of movies.

• 13:44Theo Von?

Is he allowed to have it or not?

• 13:46Speaker 02

Not really, but, like, his, like, I, his parents, I think they kinda know, but they don't, like, they don't bother.

• 13:52Theo Von?

  Got it.

• 13:53Speaker 02

  So.

• 13:53Theo Von?

But he had some different things, he had Dukes of Hazzard?

• 13:55Speaker 02

Yeah, well, I don't know if he had Dukes of Hazzard, but he had, like, lots of diff, other different ones, like, like, Smoking the Bandit, like, Grumpy Old Man.

• 14:05Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah, Walter Matthau.

• 14:07Speaker 02

Those are really funny, and I think he's, like, he wants to get, or, like, Fast and Furious, too.

• 14:12Theo Von?

Ooh, he's trying to get wild, huh?

• 14:14Speaker 02

  Yeah, like, he's pretty crazy.

• 14:16Theo Von?

It sounds like it, if he's trying to do all that, that's a lot. What about Little House on the Prairie, you guys ever watch that?

• 14:21Speaker 02

I've seen a little bit on that, like.

• 14:23Theo Von?

  Couple hotties on there.

• 14:24Speaker 02

Yeah, like, the, the ones, the, they almost, uh, you mean, like, the, like, Laura?

• 14:30Theo Von?

I mean, that's a child, but I mean, yeah, I don't even know, the mom, I'm talking about the mom.

• 14:33Speaker 02

  Oh, the mom?

• 14:34Theo Von?

  Yeah, Carolyn.

• 14:35Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 14:36Theo Von?

  She's cute.

• 14:37Speaker 02

Yeah, kinda, but isn't she like really old now?

• 14:40Theo Von?

She's getting older probably, but who knows what could happen? You know, they're doing a lot of like, there's a lot of biohacking and stuff now. But I'm just seeing a lot of beautiful ladies on here.

• 14:48Speaker 02

  Yeah, definitely.

• 14:49Theo Von?

And, and now with this, with this something in Amish culture, if you see these dames, is that, are these young ladies, is that something you're attracted to growing up? Cause this almost had, they almost have like a, a little bit of an Amish feel to them.

• 14:59Speaker 02

Yeah, what do you mean like, like?

• 15:01Theo Von?

Like a settler ver, like would this be a girl, like if you'd have seen this when you were 12 or something and you look at Mary Ingles right here, the older sister, you'd be like, oh, she's cute.

• 15:10Speaker 02

  Yeah, I would.

• 15:11Theo Von?

  And that's okay?

• 15:12Speaker 02

  Yeah, that's okay.

• 15:12Theo Von?

Okay. Yeah, I'm just curious, cause we grew up watching this and it was great. They're remaking this right now.

• 15:17Speaker 02

  Oh, they are?

• 15:18Theo Von?

  A new season.

• 15:19Speaker 02

  That's pretty cool.

• 15:20Theo Von?

  I know, so.

• 15:22Speaker 02

Dude, that one guy has white hair on his beard. He must getting, be getting old.

• 15:25Theo Von?

Yeah, that guy, he's actually, I think that guy's deceased, but um, you mentioned being on Rumspringer, right?

• 15:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 15:31Theo Von?

So you're on Rumspringer right now?

• 15:33Speaker 02

  Right now, yep.

• 15:34Theo Von?

Okay. How does Rumspringer start? How long does it last? Who gets to go on it?

• 15:40Speaker 02

Okay, so pretty much everyone goes on it now. I've, I've heard of where like families, like didn't let their kids go on it. But like, that has happened, but like they, the, when that, sometimes when that happens, like the kid just leaves and like he becomes, becomes English and.

• 15:58Theo Von?

Oh, cause they feel they can't, they're not allowed to, that the family's not following the rules?

• 16:02Speaker 02

No, the, everyone can go on Rumspringer, like Rumspringer, everyone does it, every single, now, every single, like every single community that does Rumspringer, like, like they usually go on, cause what happens is around 16, 16 and a half, you go, you join Rumspringer, which we, we call the Uwa.

• 16:22Theo Von?

  The Uwa?

• 16:23Speaker 02

Yeah, which basically means, the, what was it?

• 16:27Speaker 02

  Like young, young people.

• 16:29Theo Von?

  The youth?

• 16:29Speaker 02

The youth, yeah, youth, there you go.

• 16:31Theo Von?

  Okay.

• 16:31Speaker 02

That'd be a better word for it. So you're picking up?

• 16:33Theo Von?

  The Uwa?

• 16:34Speaker 02

  Yep, the Uwa.

• 16:35Theo Von?

  Makes sense.

• 16:35Speaker 02

Yep, so that's when you go to like singings after church. Now, I never, I never really, really went, went, went to one, because when I went on Rumspringer, the church was kinda already going down, cause our church kinda, it's kinda split up now. Actually, our bishop kinda, he kinda booked out, he kinda decked out, so.

• 16:57Theo Von?

  No.

• 16:58Speaker 02

Yeah, so right now, there's, there's, we still have church, but it's like only like an hour, like hour and a half and. And so there's a lot of Amish around us, there's still Amish and then, but they're not a member of the church anymore. Because when it opens in the Swarts and True Brownish.

• 17:14Theo Von?

  Wait, wait, when what opens?

• 17:15Speaker 02

Like, so when the church doesn't come to agreement for like a, for a while. And then it's kinda, it's kinda like a rule that they have to open the doors. And then whoever wants to go can, you know, get out of the, no longer be a member of the church and doesn't require to have to follow the rules. Ah, that's only, that's only when you're like joint to church already.

• 17:38Theo Von?

Okay, so members of the church, if the churches, if for some reason there's diff, there's some problem within that church. Where they're not able to, uh, like maybe obviously there was a problem with the bishop you're saying?

• 17:49Speaker 02

Well, the, like the, like the people in the community and the bishop and like the, like there was.

• 17:55Theo Von?

  There's an argument?

• 17:56Speaker 02

Yeah, they were not agreeing on the same things.

• 17:58Theo Von?

Okay, understood. So there was a disagreement.

• 17:59Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 18:00Theo Von?

  And so the bishop left.

• 18:01Speaker 02

Yeah, well, that's actually, this is a very rare thing to happen. The bishop just like, it was months, it was probably over a year of like this stuff happening. But it was usually like the, like the smallest things and I think it like annoyed some of the, uh, like the people in there.

• 18:16Theo Von?

  The congregation?

• 18:17Speaker 02

Yeah, like some of the, some of the members. Cause I know, I know if a guy like they came to his house, cause he's certain, cause his, the curtains on his window were like not the right shade of blue or, or even the reflectors on the buckies. Cause some, our buckies don't have that many reflectors, not compared to like buckies in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania. Cause they got like that big, uh.

• 18:38Theo Von?

  Big reflector plate?

• 18:39Speaker 02

Yeah, like that triangle thing on it.

• 18:41Theo Von?

  It's flashy, huh?

• 18:41Speaker 02

Yeah, it is flashy. And yeah, we don't have, we don't have that reflection. Actually go, go to the left, that buggy that's white horse.

• 18:50Theo Von?

  One more, right there.

• 18:51Speaker 02

  Yeah, right there.

• 18:51Theo Von?

  That's yours.

• 18:52Speaker 02

That's how our buckies look like. And there were, there was, what was there? Reflector on the front or the back of a buggy like that? And they didn't like that.

• 19:02Theo Von?

So the bishop had too many reflectors on his buggy?

• 19:03Speaker 02

No, like the members had too many reflectors on their buggy and they got, they got after him for that.

• 19:08Theo Von?

Oh, the bishop got after him for it?

• 19:09Speaker 02

Yeah, like the bishop, though the bishop doesn't even live in this community, he lives down there because our bishop before, he actually, actually died in a house fire, so.

• 19:19Theo Von?

  No.

• 19:20Speaker 02

Yeah, like the whole, the whole house burnt down and.

• 19:23Theo Von?

  How? What happened? A candle?

• 19:24Speaker 02

I don't know. I don't think it was a candle. I think, I think it was something with a stove in the wash house and this was a hot fire. It was twenty, it was twenty below and this hot fire, I was told it was hot. And there was, and maybe it wasn't twenty below, but it was definitely ten below or so. And like.

• 19:44Theo Von?

  The fire just kept burning?

• 19:45Speaker 02

Fire just kept burning and the, when the, when the people came out, they're like, the people in the red, the people like, what do you call it?

• 19:52Theo Von?

  The firemen?

• 19:52Speaker 02

Yeah, but they had to like keep the water on so their holes wouldn't freeze. It was really cold. And the, the, his wife actually survived and apparently when she came out, it was so hot, she just laid on the snow and like she was fine for a little bit, but she had like, actually a little bit of burns and stuff like that.

• 20:08Theo Von?

Do they think she started it or no?

• 20:10Speaker 02

No, I don't think so. I guess we don't have insurance, like we don't have life insurance and stuff, so. I think it was, I think it was an accident, but that, that wouldn't be too funny if she like.

• 20:20Theo Von?

  Thought she had life insurance?

• 20:22Speaker 02

Yeah, that, that would be, wouldn't that be like illegal?

• 20:25Theo Von?

Between the Hohele, that happens all the time. The Hohele are always killing their spouses for insurance money.

• 20:29Speaker 02

That's not very nice. That's like, that, isn't that murder?

• 20:32Theo Von?

  Yup. That sure is.

• 20:35Speaker 02

  That's not very nice.

• 20:36Theo Von?

And dude, not only is it murder.

• 20:38Speaker 02

  What?

• 20:39Theo Von?

But it's murdering for money, but I guess if you don't have life insurance, you don't have to worry about it.

• 20:44Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 20:44Theo Von?

  It's kinda nice.

• 20:45Speaker 02

  Yeah, and.

• 20:46Theo Von?

So go ahead, kill me, you won't get anything.

• 20:48Speaker 02

Yeah, that's kinda the idea. Yeah, so yeah, damage, like damage, like, like back in the wars. I think the government tried to force us like to go to wars, but we're like pacifists and stuff. Like, yeah, we'll, we'll like wrestle and stuff when we're younger and, and, and then also sometimes maybe argue. But other than that, like, we don't like kill each other.

• 21:09Theo Von?

  The Amish are pretty peaceful.

• 21:10Speaker 02

Yeah, and then, yeah, cuz back in like the wars and stuff like we we just did like all the cooking and the cleaning and then like saving people too.

• 21:19Theo Von?

Is that true? Let me read that right here. World War, the Amish were subject to the military draft in US wars, but due to their religious beliefs as pacifists, they were usually classified as conscientious objectors and assigned to noncombatant or alternative service roles. World War I and II, Amishmen were drafted, but most received farm deferments or performed noncombatant services. Some were sent to army camps and suffered abuse when refusing military service entirely. And in rare cases, some were imprisoned for refusing all forms of service.

• 21:50Speaker 02

Yeah, like the Amish, the and where the Amish came from, like, like they went through a lot of stuff. It's like, there's a, there's a book. Actually, where the Amish came from was like from the Anabaptists, like those were all, like those were like the, like the OGs. They came all the back, all the way from the Catholic Church.

• 22:08Theo Von?

Really? Like the OGs, you're saying?

• 22:10Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 22:10Theo Von?

Did the Amish have to fight to establish themselves in America?

• 22:14Speaker 02

Ah, that I'm not actually very sure, but I know like when, when, uh, like, when back, I think it was back in the seventies, I think. That they had to fight like court and stuff. I think they went through a lot of like court stuff. But like for that stuff, I think they did, but also like the government also agreed cuz this is like a free country and stuff and.

• 22:36Theo Von?

Um, while not armed struggles, the Amish sometimes faced legal and social battles, especially regarding education and their right to practice their faith freely. Notably, in the 20th century, they opposed laws that would force their children into public high schools, sometimes resulting in imprisonment or property loss for Amish parents. Wow, so they've had to fight to to maintain their way of life.

• 22:58Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 22:58Theo Von?

So there must be a lot of pride. Is there a lot of pride in being Amish?

• 23:02Speaker 02

It varies from community to community, but yeah, like there is pride in being Amish. Like, we don't believe in being prideful, but that's like something you feel good about.

• 23:12Theo Von?

Right, so yeah, it's a little bit different than being like, being like egotistical about.

• 23:17Speaker 02

  I guess.

• 23:17Theo Von?

Support the show, support your pits, and stop smelling like yesterday's lunch, baby, baby. Do you, do Amish people have to go to public school, or do you go to your own school?

• 24:51Speaker 02

We go to our own school.

• 24:52Theo Von?

  Do you have a schoolhouse?

• 24:53Speaker 02

Yeah, we have a schoolhouse. I sent a picture of the schoolhouse to that white building, sort of building in the front there. That's where all the horses kept. Now, since I'm more kids, we had to build another, like a little shelter for the horses. So, that was down there.

• 25:09Theo Von?

  Oh, for the horses?

• 25:10Speaker 02

  Yeah, for the horses.

• 25:11Theo Von?

Thought you meant the cheerleaders or something.

• 25:13Speaker 02

No, we don't have cheerleaders because that'd be like, they're like, like they barely wear clothes and stuff. It looks like they're in their underwear.

• 25:20Theo Von?

It's too much. Yeah, I've never, I've never loved a basketball game so much that I got in my underwear for it.

• 25:25Speaker 02

Yeah, that's right. That's, that's a bit odd. And like even when they go to, like, when they go to the beach and stuff, like, they're just in their underwear.

• 25:33Theo Von?

Some of them get dressed up more for the beach even.

• 25:35Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 25:36Theo Von?

  It's crazy.

• 25:36Speaker 02

Yeah, like, they get more dressed down.

• 25:39Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 25:39Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 25:40Theo Von?

But, but so you go to school there, you put your horses in the front building?

• 25:43Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 25:44Theo Von?

Okay. And does, does everybody have their own horse or sometimes people come in groups?

• 25:48Speaker 02

Yeah, like fam, one family usually has one horse. And then like, we have building, uh, like a building. And then like one through eighth grade is like, we all sit in there and then, so that's all in one room. And then there's usually one teacher. So one year, we actually had like 25 kids in like one building. That was like the most we ever had. And then, and it varied from year to year. So like, we started out with like 10 and then as it went up 14, 16, 20, and then 25. And then it kind of slowed down, like came down from there. But yeah, like first, that's where I went to school, first through eighth grade. And everyone's sitting in the same room. And then we have classes too.

• 26:29Theo Von?

  Is it pretty cool?

• 26:30Speaker 02

Uh, it can be if you make it, but it was, I didn't really like school when I went to school, so.

• 26:37Theo Von?

And when, when does the school day start?

• 26:39Speaker 02

So that's usually, if I remember right, it was like, it was 8:30, I think. 8:30, school starts. And then we sing like three, four hymns. And then that usually lasts 15, 20 minutes. And then we start reading, reading classes. And then it depends on the teacher. Some like to go from eighth grade down and others like to go from first grade up. So and then after that, it's, it's, uh, it's recess like 15 minutes. And then usually arithmetic classes. And then till we would do arithmetic until lunch, which is like around eleven thirty. And school goes out, like only only for a little bit, for like an hour.

• 27:19Theo Von?

Do you go home for lunch or no?

• 27:20Speaker 02

Uh, no, no, we we pack our lunch, we eat at school, we sit at our desk and eat and then usually that takes like around around twenty minutes, fifteen, twenty minutes. And then we go out and play different games and we play like, uh, what was it? Oh, yeah, we played, we played a game that we call rapid, it's where like the like the animal rapid.

• 27:41Theo Von?

  Rabbit?

• 27:42Speaker 02

Yeah, like rapid. And then, so what you do is there's a person in the middle as a ball.

• 27:48Theo Von?

Like Easter, like that little, like a Easter?

• 27:50Speaker 02

Yeah, like a like a bunny, like, so, yeah, we call it Hawasa.

• 27:54Theo Von?

  Hawasa?

• 27:54Speaker 02

  Yep, Hawasa.

• 27:55Theo Von?

  Hawasa.

• 27:56Speaker 02

That's the Amish word for rapids.

• 27:58Theo Von?

  Rapids.

• 27:59Speaker 02

So we used to throw the ball up and if someone threw it. So it's kind of like that, I gotta better better explain this, but it's kind of.

• 28:07Theo Von?

  You're doing good.

• 28:07Speaker 02

It's just kind of like dodgeball, you have two bases or two bases on each side and then there's a person in the middle, he's got like a ball. Uh, sometimes we use a basketball, sometimes we use the tennis ball, tennis ball was like my favorite. Cause you could throw it better and it wouldn't hurt as much if it hit you.

• 28:23Theo Von?

  Okay.

• 28:24Speaker 02

Cause you so you're you're supposed to throw it five up five times and if you throw it up five times and no one runs through to the other base. Then you can go on one base and count to basically do a countdown and then if no one goes off of that base and goes through before you're done, you can just, even though they're on base and goes touch them and, you know, get them out.

• 28:44Theo Von?

Oh, they can actually physically catch them?

• 28:45Speaker 02

Yeah, we catch them and take them down and.

• 28:48Theo Von?

But would this would this be a game, boys would play with boys?

• 28:51Speaker 02

Uh, everyone, everyone would play to teach would even help too, so.

• 28:54Theo Von?

  Really?

• 28:54Speaker 02

Yeah, so, like, it depends on like, it depends how rough, like, the the harder you tried to get away, I guess, you were you accepted the roughness and you were basically you run through and try not to get caught and then you then someone takes you down on the ground, you crawl, you crawl for the base, it's like, it's almost like Vietnam and stuff, I've never been there, but.

• 29:17Theo Von?

No, but no, we've seen pictures, we all under. Understand exactly what it was like.

• 29:20Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 29:22Theo Von?

That's unbelievable dude. So that was, so that was a popular game, Rappa?

• 29:26Speaker 02

  Rapid.

• 29:26Theo Von?

  Rapid.

• 29:27Speaker 02

Like the, like the Easter Bunny.

• 29:29Theo Von?

  Rapid?

• 29:30Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 29:30Theo Von?

And then what did girls do? Do they play this game? Or what did girls who were definitely girls? Like some girls played this game, but what did like the real girls do?

• 29:39Speaker 02

The, the real girls always like, we always were together. Like we always, we always helped each other.

• 29:43Theo Von?

Oh, everybody played the same stuff?

• 29:44Speaker 02

Yeah, but it like, when it was like a rainy day or something, like sometimes we played board games and then not as much, but most times like we all played with each other. Cause we didn't know stuff yet.

• 29:55Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 29:56Speaker 02

Yeah, cause we don't get taught that stuff in school or anything.

• 29:59Theo Von?

  Like, what do you mean?

• 30:00Speaker 02

Like the, uh, about girls and we don't really know too much about each other, I guess.

• 30:06Theo Von?

Oh, so everybody's just kind of like, just all the same?

• 30:08Speaker 02

  Yeah, we're all kids.

• 30:09Theo Von?

  Oh, you're all kids, yeah.

• 30:09Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 30:10Theo Von?

Are you allowed to flirt at school? Like at some point, do people feel some attraction? Like, do you think like?

• 30:14Speaker 02

Uh, maybe, maybe, but so the school I went to, I couldn't really do that because, uh, pretty much everyone I went to school was, was either first or second cousin.

• 30:24Theo Von?

  Oh, I feel that, brother.

• 30:26Speaker 02

Yeah. So yeah, it's like, it's a tough world.

• 30:30Theo Von?

It is, brother. And you know, that's why we gotta do some of this redistricting and rezoning.

• 30:35Speaker 02

Yeah, we gotta like re, like rezone, like move out, move in. That's what, that's what a lot of Amish have been doing around us and moving out to different communities, I guess. It's a good thing then you can, you know, you know, spread the family tree. Cause sometimes the tree becomes a bush.

• 30:50Theo Von?

  Yeah, for sure.

• 30:51Speaker 02

  Like intertwined with each other.

• 30:53Theo Von?

The Amish population experiences a strong founder effect, meaning that their gene pool originates from a small number of original settlers. Most Amish people are distantly related because nearly all Amish in America descended from a small group of about 200 to 500 founders who immigrated from Germany and Switzerland in the 18th century.

• 31:10Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 31:11Theo Von?

The genetic closeness increases the likelihood of certain inherited conditions with some rare genetic disorders much more common among Amish than in the general US population. Do you guys have, um, oh, this says cousin marriage. Marriages between cousins do occur.

• 31:26Speaker 02

Not first cousin, second cousin does.

• 31:28Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 31:28Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 31:29Theo Von?

  For sure, buddy.

• 31:30Speaker 02

But that, like, it's not really, it's not really, uh, Like a forward, like, hey, you can marry a second, but, but it does happen.

• 31:39Theo Von?

But if it happens, it happens.

• 31:40Speaker 02

  Yeah, it happens, it happens.

• 31:41Theo Von?

You're already close, you might as well be closer.

• 31:44Speaker 02

Yeah, that's right. Yeah, I don't know how, because we don't have like any family tree and stuff.

• 31:49Theo Von?

  You don't?

• 31:50Speaker 02

No, but we do have like a big book that, that tells us like all Amish communities, like in certain states, like who, like, basically a dictionary for, for like Amish people and who's related to who and.

• 32:03Theo Von?

  Oh, you have that?

• 32:03Speaker 02

Yeah, it's basically like Google for Amish when it comes to like finding, like, oh yeah, this person's related to this, or how old is this person? And it's kind, even got their like addresses and stuff and so.

• 32:15Theo Von?

  Oh, nice.

• 32:16Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 32:16Theo Von?

It's like a book where you can go look and see who's who and how old.

• 32:19Speaker 02

And how many kids they have and when the kids were born, so that's pretty cool. Oh yeah, right? That's kind of how it is, but it's a little bit different than that.

• 32:27Theo Von?

  Okay.

• 32:28Speaker 02

Because they put like, they like, they put like two different, was it two different names on the front, like whoever like put it together and stuff.

• 32:35Theo Von?

  Got it.

• 32:35Speaker 02

Because some, because some Amish, like, like they know like who, who's related to everyone. It's like, it's almost like they're, like they're happy, I get, I guess you could say, and they, they like.

• 32:46Theo Von?

  They're happy?

• 32:46Speaker 02

  No, they're happy.

• 32:47Theo Von?

  Happy?

• 32:48Speaker 02

  Like they're, it's their.

• 32:50Theo Von?

  Oh, it's their hobby?

• 32:51Speaker 02

  Like H O B B Y.

• 32:53Theo Von?

  Like rap, like rap it?

• 32:55Speaker 02

  No.

• 32:55Theo Von?

  Hobby?

• 32:55Speaker 02

  Yeah, like, like, like hobby.

• 32:57Theo Von?

Like, it's something they like to do in their, for spare time?

• 33:00Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, that's what it is.

• 33:01Theo Von?

  Genealogy, put it together.

• 33:02Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 33:03Theo Von?

Oh yeah, you gotta, somebody's gotta know who's related, or you gotta be able to ask somebody. So could there be people in your school that are your cousin, you don't even know it?

• 33:11Speaker 02

Ah, no, because everyone in the school, like, they drive there with a horse and a bucky, so it's fairly close, because we have like, mm, let me think. I, I, I think it's like half, at least a half a dozen schools in our, in our like community.

• 33:24Theo Von?

  Okay.

• 33:25Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 33:26Theo Von?

And how do you decide what school you go to?

• 33:28Speaker 02

  Whichever you live closest to.

• 33:29Theo Von?

  That's it?

• 33:30Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 33:31Theo Von?

Do they have like learn, like we're, they were talking about like, obviously when cousins get together, things can get crazy. And you might get, get one of the Lord's remixes out there. Or disabled, they call out here in America.

• 33:43Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 33:43Theo Von?

  Mentally disabled.

• 33:44Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 33:45Theo Von?

Um, autism, Amishism, I'm sure you guys are seeing it.

• 33:48Speaker 02

  Well.

• 33:48Theo Von?

Somebody will just raise a barn with their eyes, you know, just put a nail through a four by four with their just, with their, with the sheer, just, you know, with just the blink of an eye.

• 33:57Speaker 02

I don't know, we have autism, but like, we have like some with Down syndrome. Yeah, cause my great uncle, uh, he has Down syndrome and stuff.

• 34:04Theo Von?

  Fuck yeah.

• 34:05Speaker 02

Yeah, he's like, he's like 57 years old.

• 34:07Theo Von?

  And he's awesome, huh?

• 34:08Speaker 02

Yeah, he's pretty awesome, cause me and him, uh, me and him, I don't, like, I, I just remember that I'd carry, like, carry wood with him.

• 34:15Theo Von?

  Mm-hmm.

• 34:15Speaker 02

Like, me and him carried wood into the, like, wood box for a stove and, I don't know why, but apparently I used to tease him a little bit too. I kinda feel bad for him now. I thought, like, I think I was like, like six or seven years old, I was really young.

• 34:28Theo Von?

Oh, it's okay, you were just a kid, man, you were, you were just joking around.

• 34:31Speaker 02

Yeah, cause I, I thought I was having fun, but.

• 34:34Theo Von?

But he could carry a lot of wood?

• 34:35Speaker 02

Oh yeah, he could carry a lot of wood.

• 34:36Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 34:37Speaker 02

  He was pretty cool and.

• 34:39Theo Von?

  And he passed away?

• 34:41Speaker 02

No, he hasn't passed away yet, but I heard recently, he's like, he's not doing, doing too good anymore, but, but he's still, he's still like surviving and stuff. But isn't that like real, kinda old for a, a person with like Down syndrome and stuff?

• 34:52Theo Von?

That's a great question, actually, Timothy, let me look at that up. How old do the, uh, how old do the Down syndrome get, if you don't mind pulling up there?

• 34:59Speaker 02

Yeah, it might be, it might be like because he's Amish that he's like.

• 35:04Theo Von?

  That he's clocking more time.

• 35:06Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 35:07Theo Von?

Cause it's probably harder, probably a Down syndrome being out under the bright lights of regular life than it is out there just slurping in the moonlight.

• 35:14Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 35:15Theo Von?

The average life expectancy for individuals with Down syndrome is now about 60 years. With many living into their 60s and 70s, thanks to advances in medical care and social inclusion, that's awesome, dude.

• 35:25Speaker 02

McDonald's supposed to not be getting to them anymore.

• 35:27Theo Von?

  At McDonald's, huh?

• 35:28Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 35:28Theo Von?

It was really hampering them. Well, there was a time when, like, um, McDonald's, a lot of their employees had Down syndrome.

• 35:35Speaker 02

  Oh, really?

• 35:36Theo Von?

Bring that up. And then, so it, it caused a lot of people to take people there with Down syndrome. So then they were eating all this McDonald's and it was like, not good for them.

• 35:46Speaker 02

No, it's like, it was like backing them up.

• 35:48Theo Von?

Yeah. Um, but McDonald's was hiring a hella down.

• 35:52Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 35:54Theo Von?

  They had the whole.

• 35:56Speaker 02

I never knew like places like that had.

• 35:59Theo Von?

Oh, yeah, especially now. Now there's coffee shops in America and everybody that works there has Down syndrome. Shane Gillis owns one. He's a comedian.

• 36:07Speaker 02

Wow. So, yeah, I heard Shane Gillis was around the Amish too when he was when he was younger.

• 36:12Theo Von?

Yep. He grew up around the Amish. He's famous. Some people said he has Down syndrome. Some people said he doesn't. I don't know. We had a guy on who completed the Ironman, who was one of the biggest physical challengers in the world. And he has Down syndrome. Chris Nicic. Bring him up.

• 36:25Speaker 02

  What's what's an Ironman?

• 36:27Theo Von?

It's like the toughest competition ever.

• 36:32Theo Von?

  There he is right there.

• 36:33Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 36:34Theo Von?

What are the conditions of an Ironman? Just so we're clear on it.

• 36:39Theo Von?

Is one of a series of long distance triathlon races organized by the World Triathlon Corporation, consisting of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bicycle ride, and 26 mile run, completed in that order.

• 36:55Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 36:56Theo Von?

  Think you could do it?

• 36:56Speaker 02

No, I'd have to I'd have to like build three barns in a day and like like run up and down to the house a couple of times.

• 37:05Theo Von?

Oh, you'd have to jack and gel a million gallons of water, dude. Yeah, even if I had Down syndrome, I don't think I could do it.

• 37:10Speaker 02

No, it'd be really hard to do. Like even though I'm like, I think it'd even be hard for the Amish people because first we we need to learn how to bike.

• 37:18Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 37:18Speaker 02

Yeah, because we can swim because like the rivers and stuff.

• 37:21Theo Von?

Are you allowed to have bikes or no?

• 37:22Speaker 02

  Like we can sneak them.

• 37:24Theo Von?

  Oh, you sneak them, huh?

• 37:25Speaker 02

Yeah, but like the Amish over in like Indiana and Ohio and in Pennsylvania, they got like scooters and stuff. Yeah, they do it. But they got like the low riders, like the ones that are really close to the ground.

• 37:35Theo Von?

Oh, yeah, the Amish, yeah, the Amish.

• 37:38Speaker 02

Yeah, that you like stand on and stuff, not the ones that you like sit on.

• 37:42Theo Von?

Oh, I see what you're saying. So not the motorized ones?

• 37:45Speaker 02

No, not not the motorized or the ones with like pedals and stuff.

• 37:50Theo Von?

Yeah, they had them one, they had one Amish dude, or farming on one of these, I think.

• 37:53Speaker 02

Oh, like, was he doing it on the, on the horse or like the scooter?

• 37:57Theo Von?

  I think the scooter.

• 37:58Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 38:00Theo Von?

And they have a lot of Mexican Amish too now, the Amish, they call them.

• 38:03Speaker 02

Yeah, I saw like there were a couple like Mexican Amish, I was like, cause I read like a couple of years ago, there was this Mexican Amish guy, he popped up, like, he was, he looked fully Mexican, he looked like he came from Mexico and

• 38:14Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 38:15Speaker 02

I think someone must have adopted him, it sounded like that and, like, he could speak like, like, he could speak like the Mexican language.

• 38:21Theo Von?

  Hmm.

• 38:22Speaker 02

And then, and he also speaks like Pennsylvania Dutch too.

• 38:26Theo Von?

  Hell, yeah.

• 38:26Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 38:27Theo Von?

I love that, man. Yeah, dude, and that must be the craziest if you're Mexican, cause then you're like, holy shit, I still have to do all this construction myself, you know? Like, if you're Amish Mexican, people expect you to build stuff.

• 38:39Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 38:39Theo Von?

  Faster than anybody.

• 38:41Speaker 02

Yeah, cause Mexicans and Amish, we go back and forth, like, we look who can build the fastest.

• 38:46Theo Von?

  If you have both?

• 38:47Speaker 02

Yeah. Now, when it comes to sheet rocking, I have to say Mexicans are definitely faster, cause they got them long, like, like those metal things that, I think they're called stilts.

• 38:55Theo Von?

Oh, really? So they're good at sheet rocking?

• 38:57Speaker 02

Yeah, they, I, I saw a video of them, they like, held their tape measure and then walked over and the one guy, real tall looking guy, if he had like long legs, he was on stilts and stuff, he almost had to touch the ceiling.

• 39:10Theo Von?

What, um, tell me about this, when you go to Rumspringer, how do you go? Is there a day that you go? What happens? You hit what age and how does it start?

• 39:19Speaker 02

Uh, it's kind of just, it's kind of, kind of spontaneous when it happens, you're like roughly, roughly sixteen and a half when it happens and your parents are like, like, you can go and then you can just go like one night.

• 39:31Theo Von?

Do they sit you down at dinner and tell you? Is it like an announcement at school? Is it at church? How does it happen that they say, we're gonna allow you to go to Rumspringer?

• 39:39Speaker 02

Uh, it's not, it's not really an announcement, it's just kinda like, hey, you can, you can go there and then you probably have a couple of rules, you know? Don't do this, don't do that, but you're probably gonna do it anyway.

• 39:49Theo Von?

  Really?

• 39:50Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 39:50Theo Von?

And so, is there a moment in an actual day that you leave? Like, do you say goodbye?

• 39:54Speaker 02

Oh, no, no, so when Rumspringer happens and you go to the Yor, like, you still live at home and stuff, you're still Amish and then... You you just do stuff on the weekends that you're not supposed to.

• 40:05Theo Von?

When do you go back to your Amish country though? Like, when do you go back to your district, to your, to your home?

• 40:11Speaker 02

So, when you're in Rumspringa, you're always, you're always at home. So, like the, like, so what happens if you want, you're in Rumspringa for like, it's usually around four to five years. It, it always depends. And then, though, when you get baptized, it's usually when you have a girlfriend and then you wanna get married. So that's the reason you get baptized is to get married. And then, at the same time, you're also becoming a member of the church.

• 40:34Theo Von?

Okay, so before, so you hit about sixteen or something. And your parents say that you can go now?

• 40:39Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 40:40Theo Von?

And that means on the weekends, you can go do what you want?

• 40:42Speaker 02

Yeah, kinda. And if, if they don't hear too much about it, you, you're fine.

• 40:46Theo Von?

  Then you're doing fine?

• 40:47Speaker 02

Yeah, cuz sometimes you can be like, hey, you can't go this time.

• 40:50Theo Von?

  Okay.

• 40:50Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 40:51Theo Von?

And now, do some people choose to stay out in Rumspringa and not come back to the church? Do you have that option, or that's not an option?

• 40:57Speaker 02

Yeah, where like, people like, leave and become ex-Amish, yeah.

• 41:00Theo Von?

  And you, that can happen?

• 41:01Speaker 02

Yeah, and then when like, Rumspringa ends, it's, it's roughly around twenty to twenty-one. That's usually when people get married. Or sometimes, you know, like, all of a sudden, they realize they have a kid. And then, so that's not really, not really a good idea, like, to have a kid before you're married. So like, they either get quickly married, or, uh, like my cousin, like, uh, his, his, my cousin Frank, like, uh, he...

• 41:27Theo Von?

  He was Amish?

• 41:28Speaker 02

No, like, he, like, his parents, like, they realized they had him, that, when they were still, like, on Rumspringa Amish, so they just left.

• 41:36Theo Von?

  Wow.

• 41:37Speaker 02

  Yeah, so...

• 41:38Theo Von?

So your cousin, his, he, his parents were both on Rumspringa?

• 41:42Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 41:42Theo Von?

  Both Amish?

• 41:43Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 41:43Theo Von?

They, one of them got pregnant, the woman.

• 41:46Speaker 02

  The woman, yeah.

• 41:47Theo Von?

And then, they realized at that point that they had to leave? Would they have been welcomed back into the church, or no?

• 41:52Speaker 02

Uh, like, so what happens if that happens? You, you leave, or you, like, almost come married right away? Cuz that has happened a couple times. That actually happened for my parents, so they had to quickly get married.

• 42:03Theo Von?

Okay, so you have to make that quick choice?

• 42:05Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 42:06Theo Von?

Now, if you decide to leave, are you shunned? Are you allowed to come back? What is it like? Like, once you allow, once you decide... Side to leave.

• 42:13Speaker 02

So if you leave and you're already a member of the church, you'll get you get shunned from it. And then if you're not a member, like on Roam Spring, if you leave, it it varies on the parents a lot. Like on my dad's side, like they they wouldn't really, for the longest time, they wouldn't really be happy or wouldn't really talk to their kids when they came came and visit that one side of ex Amish. On my mom's side, they were like that for a little bit too, like in the first. But on my mom's side now, when the when the ex Amish kids come back, they're they're like now forty and stuff, thirty, forty, and maybe even older, like they come back, they're welcome, like all that stuff. But my on my dad's side, they're they're still a little bit iffy, but they're way better than they were.

• 42:55Theo Von?

I see. So they're coming around a little bit more than they used to.

• 42:58Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 42:58Theo Von?

But probably in your grandfather's generation, if somebody was shunned, they might not talk to them?

• 43:02Speaker 02

Yep, that's how it is. When you get when you get shunned, you're not supposed to, well, you can talk to them, but you're not supposed to like help them out in any way, like you can't accept money from them. And you can't, you can't, you're not supposed to get a ride from them too.

• 43:16Theo Von?

  A ride?

• 43:16Speaker 02

Like, uh, like, let's say they were driving, the ones that left, they were driving and stuff. You're not supposed to like, like ride with them.

• 43:23Theo Von?

Oh, yeah. If they can't even stay on the path to heaven, how are they gonna keep you on a path when they're trying to take you somewhere?

• 43:28Speaker 02

Yeah, they're gonna like take you off the road or something.

• 43:31Theo Von?

  They sure are.

• 43:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 43:31Theo Von?

They're li- yeah, literally do. They're literally gonna take you off the road. You know, I I never expected to be a business owner. First, actually, you know what? I'm gonna tap a little, I'm gonna have a little sip of Celsius, because I need to pick me up. Have you ever had this before?

• 45:16Speaker 02

No, not this, no. Is it, is it good?

• 45:19Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 45:20Speaker 02

Yeah, it's grape. I saw it's, it's grape, so it's like really good. I'm gonna have to try this stuff.

• 45:25Theo Von?

Can you have a little bit?

• 45:26Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 45:26Theo Von?

  No alcohol.

• 45:27Speaker 02

No al, okay. So what does it have? It's like water?

• 45:31Theo Von?

Mmm, ooh, mine's cherry cola flavored. It's like spicy stuff. It's like a little bit of ADD, kinda.

• 45:38Speaker 02

Oh, dude, this stuff actually tastes like, like the grapes that you squeeze out of the, like, not the grapes that you eat from the store, but like the Amish grapes that you can buy, like the ones that you squeeze out of the, uh, what do you call that? The skin? Have you ever had those grapes where you just squeeze them out and you swallow them?

• 45:55Theo Von?

  Uh-uh.

• 45:56Speaker 02

Yeah, it tastes just like this.

• 45:57Theo Von?

  Really?

• 45:58Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 45:59Theo Von?

Let's get a look at those Amish purple grapes.

• 46:02Speaker 02

Yeah, they're, they're, uh, they're, yeah, that's how they look. And those, you know how the stores, like, they have no seats in them? Like, these have like a seat in them, you just squeeze them out, and then you swallow them, because if you try to eat them, like chew on them, like, um, like you just bite into the seat and stuff.

• 46:18Theo Von?

Oh, you squeeze them out and swallow them?

• 46:20Speaker 02

This actually tastes exactly like that, so it must be very natural.

• 46:23Theo Von?

Yes, sir. It's the best, man.

• 46:26Speaker 02

  It's very good.

• 46:27Theo Von?

That'll get you home, brother, that'll get you home.

• 46:30Speaker 02

Yeah, so it's, if this, I saw that this, this have caffeine in it?

• 46:34Theo Von?

Yeah, it has a little bit of caffeine.

• 46:35Speaker 02

So I'll be like moving around.

• 46:37Theo Von?

  Yeah, you'll be feeling something.

• 46:39Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 46:39Theo Von?

What has your Rumspringer experience been like?

• 46:42Speaker 02

Uh, it's, it's been crazy. I've done like the first like year and a half. Well, I didn't do too much because I wasn't 18 yet. But like this summer, I've done so many crazy things. Actually, last summer I got to drive like a Corvette. That was crazy. Like these two girls, like they let me drive their Corvette. A lot of fun.

• 47:02Theo Von?

Hell yeah. Where'd you meet them?

• 47:05Speaker 02

Ah, through my, my uncle, my ex-homage Uncle Simon. I, I met him through them.

• 47:10Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 47:10Speaker 02

And dude, I actually was at their wedding, the like, uh, the one with the black hair. I was at their, like her and her husband's wedding. It was pretty cool.

• 47:19Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 47:19Speaker 02

And yeah, so I got to drive a Corvette. That thing was really fast too. Like you stamp on the pedal a little bit. It was like a horse with like, like some special oats or something.

• 47:30Theo Von?

  Oh yeah.

• 47:31Speaker 02

Like put some Celsius in their water.

• 47:33Theo Von?

Oh yeah, that thing's been eating, uh,

• 47:35Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 47:35Theo Von?

diesel dipped carrots right there, homie. That horse has got it. Oh, that's dope.

• 47:39Speaker 02

They were like, well, I think it was overcrowded because there's only like two seats and then, and then the, she's like sitting in the middle and stuff.

• 47:47Theo Von?

Hey, that's fine though, dude. You gotta have at least one chick hanging out of a Corvette, dude.

• 47:52Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 47:52Theo Von?

  That's Rumspringer.

• 47:53Speaker 02

Yeah, that is Rumspringer. And then the, we, we, we, uh, they wanted to get a couple of videos because they thought that was pretty cool.

• 48:01Theo Von?

Oh, it's amazing, bro. It's great to see you out there just trying some different things.

• 48:04Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 48:05Theo Von?

What other things did you try that you found that you liked and didn't like out there?

• 48:08Speaker 02

Ah, uh, what was it? Oh yeah. I also got the other, the other week and I got to, went to like, it was Eau Claire, Wisconsin. There was like, uh, like an airshow where they had like the Blue Angel airplanes, had all kinds of airplanes.

• 48:22Theo Von?

  Nice.

• 48:23Speaker 02

And then they also like, you had to pay a little bit. Well, it was actually quite a bit. It was like $200 for like one helicopter ride. And I was like, you know, this might be like a week or two of wait, just like of, of me working, but like I don't want to go in a helicopter, right? So I was kind of scared to like hold my phone out because, uh,

• 48:44Speaker 02

Cause like the helicopters open and stuff like what happens if you drop it and stuff. But it was really smooth too. And when we took off and like we took off and stuff, it was like, it was really crazy. It felt like we were, like I felt like I was on a, like on a pla- piece of plywood and I just started going up. It was like, it was crazy. And it felt really crazy. That's actually Atlee right there.

• 49:07Theo Von?

  Oh, nice brother.

• 49:08Speaker 02

He's still, he's still Amish at home. He, he bust his like bust his like cut his hair and stuff, so.

• 49:14Theo Von?

Wow, that's exceptional, bro. You got out there. You just felt like a bird, huh?

• 49:17Speaker 02

I did feel like a bird. And this guy, I think he, I think he gave a little bit of longer ride, cause we're Amish and stuff. And he, we like went sideways on the, we went sideways on the, like on the, above the lake and stuff. Cause like if you hit water really far off, it's like, it's pretty much like concrete, I think.

• 49:36Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 49:36Speaker 02

That we went sideways and almost felt like I was falling off, but I had my trusty seatbelt on and stuff. So we were, we were pretty good. So that was, that was a crazy ride. But it was actually kinda smooth, you know? Uh, I was actually more scared when I was like a couple of weeks later. It was like a, probably like a month later. It was right after I went to your concert. Your concert was like really crazy.

• 49:58Theo Von?

Oh, did you have fun? Could you understand a lot of the material?

• 50:01Speaker 02

I did, yeah. Like some of it I didn't understand, like the bulk guy was there. The guy that his parents are like from the Middle East was there. They were pretty cool. And then you came out and then I thought it was really funny. This was actually, you know, before the show, I was chamoing out. I was with my cousin Frank. And he was like, we were, I was just chamoing out through the music.

• 50:21Theo Von?

Yeah, cause people don't understand, this is where we met. We met after a show.

• 50:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 50:25Theo Von?

And I was like, dude, we've been trying to have an Amish person on and then here God just put us right together, brother.

• 50:30Speaker 02

Yeah, God is great. He works, he works in mysterious ways, it seems like.

• 50:34Theo Von?

  He's the magician, man.

• 50:35Speaker 02

Yeah, and I thought, you know, Seal of Mine would probably, I, I wanted to give you like, wear an Amish hat, like.

• 50:40Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 50:41Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 50:42Theo Von?

Did you give me that hat or not?

• 50:44Speaker 02

No, I, that was, it was my hat. It didn't really fit.

• 50:46Theo Von?

Oh, let us put it on.

• 50:47Speaker 02

Actually, actually, I have a little bit of a surprise for you. Hey Frank, you wanna bring that over?

• 50:53Speaker 02

Dude, I got, so what I did over last week, me and your uh, the uh, me and you, some of your strong connections were talking.

• 51:02Theo Von?

  Mm-hmm.

• 51:03Speaker 02

And uh, I, I, they, they didn't quite know what size your hat was, so. It's, it's a bit of an odd thing to like know and stuff, but.

• 51:11Theo Von?

Yeah, it's this odd thing to ask a man.

• 51:12Speaker 02

Yeah, it is. But I wanted, uh, we got an estimate size and I wanted to give you this hat. So now you can be like, you can be like part of the Amish mafia.

• 51:21Theo Von?

  Oh, that's cool, dude.

• 51:23Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 51:23Theo Von?

Thank you so much. And a hat size, that's just like the waist for your head, you know?

• 51:27Speaker 02

  Yeah, it is.

• 51:27Theo Von?

You don't want to admit you're a little fat above the ears, you know?

• 51:29Speaker 02

  Yeah, right.

• 51:30Theo Von?

This has a band in it, was this the front or the back?

• 51:32Speaker 02

  That's the front, yeah.

• 51:33Theo Von?

  Alright.

• 51:34Speaker 02

So that way you always wear the hat right. Does it fit? Oh, it's a bit loose? Is it a bit loose or?

• 51:39Theo Von?

  Perfect.

• 51:39Speaker 02

Dude, perfect. I'm glad I got you the right size.

• 51:42Theo Von?

  Danke.

• 51:43Speaker 02

You're welcome. That means uh, you're welcome.

• 51:45Theo Von?

  Does danke mean thank you?

• 51:46Speaker 02

  No, dange.

• 51:47Theo Von?

  Dange.

• 51:48Speaker 02

Yeah, it's the same thing in German, like, thank you in uh, German and Pennsylvania, that's just the same thing.

• 51:52Theo Von?

  Dange.

• 51:53Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 51:54Theo Von?

  Heck yeah, dude.

• 51:55Speaker 02

Yeah, now you're, now you're part of Amish. You just need the rest of the clothes.

• 51:59Theo Von?

I feel great, man. Do you think I would make a good Amish person or not? And be honest with me.

• 52:03Speaker 02

Ah, well, do you, do you like break a lot of rules and stuff?

• 52:07Theo Von?

  I don't know, really. I don't think so.

• 52:10Speaker 02

Yeah, like the, like, if you don't really break any of the rules, you make a pretty good Amish. I could get my mom to get you some, some Amish clothes for you.

• 52:19Theo Von?

Maybe for Christmas, I'll exchange something with you and I could send you something that would be uh, that your community would accept as well.

• 52:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 52:25Theo Von?

Are you allowed to accept gifts from people that are not Amish?

• 52:27Speaker 02

Yeah, I accept gifts from people that are not Amish.

• 52:30Theo Von?

Do your parents allow you to? Is that okay?

• 52:31Speaker 02

Yep, they, cause they sometimes like, we all, we had sometimes a guy from uh, around Christmas time, sometimes a guy like brings some stuff and then we, like, he's done it for a couple of years and he like gifts all the younger kids some presents and stuff.

• 52:45Theo Von?

  Oh, that's nice.

• 52:46Speaker 02

  Yeah, it's very nice.

• 52:47Theo Von?

Oh, I, I know you had mentioned before that your parents said there's some stuff not to do during Rumspringa, like what was some of that?

• 52:52Speaker 02

Uh, they didn't, they didn't really say too much, but they, they tell me like when uh, when I do something that, that they think, didn't think was, uh, how to say, it was like.

• 53:05Speaker 02

Like probably not the best thing to do.

• 53:06Theo Von?

  Like appropriate?

• 53:07Speaker 02

Yeah, like not probably like, cause sometimes I do wild stuff, you know, like going to Walmart, or riding a scooter.

• 53:15Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 53:16Speaker 02

  But that came around and.

• 53:18Theo Von?

But I mean, do they have advice against like sex, drugs, things like that?

• 53:21Speaker 02

Uh, no, not like any, any, like any sex stuff that, that doesn't get talked about. You just kinda, you kinda have to do like Dora the Explorer. You just kinda have to, you know, go out in the jungle and see, see what bites.

• 53:32Theo Von?

  Damn.

• 53:34Speaker 02

So yeah, we went to Walmart.

• 53:36Theo Von?

Oh, something will bite at Walmart, dude.

• 53:38Speaker 02

Yeah. I was looking at the TVs. They're like a thousand dollars, like.

• 53:43Theo Von?

  Crazy.

• 53:43Speaker 02

That's like a third of a bucky. And a, and a TV doesn't even go anywhere. It just like sits somewhere.

• 53:48Theo Von?

I'd rather just play charades with my buddy like you guys probably do a lot. Y'all play charades a lot?

• 53:52Speaker 02

I'm not even quite sure what that is.

• 53:54Theo Von?

Oh, it's where someone like you write down some movies or TV. Oh, shoot. You don't know a lot of movies and TV shows. Hmm. Charades is like somebody acts something out and you have to guess what they're acting out, like they impersonate something?

• 54:07Speaker 02

Oh, you like pretend, um, so like, let's say, uh, I was pretending to be the bishop. I'd be like, like, like my, like go down here and then big angry look.

• 54:18Theo Von?

Maybe scratching your beard, maybe going like this or something?

• 54:21Speaker 02

  Like this.

• 54:21Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 54:22Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, like something like that. No, I've never, I've never played that, but I, I kinda know what you mean.

• 54:26Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 54:27Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 54:28Theo Von?

Um, but you guys don't talk about sex within the Amish community much like at school and stuff. There's not a class that teaches you about it?

• 54:33Speaker 02

Not in school, no. So like.

• 54:35Theo Von?

Will a dad kinda take his son and have like a birds and the bees talk like in, in Hola, Hola?

• 54:41Speaker 02

  Hojilera.

• 54:42Theo Von?

Hojilera. That, that it's kind of the birds and the bees, like the dad will take you and talk to you about how things work, you know?

• 54:47Speaker 02

Yeah, no, no. Like, like all of that stuff, you, you actually have to like figure it out and stuff.

• 54:52Theo Von?

  Okay.

• 54:53Speaker 02

But like since you got phones and stuff, you can kinda, you know, you kinda, you can figure it out. Like.

• 55:01Theo Von?

But there's some stuff you, I mean, but you, you're not allowed to look at pornography on your phone and stuff.

• 55:05Speaker 02

No, you're not supposed to, no.

• 55:06Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 55:07Speaker 02

I stay away from that stuff.

• 55:09Theo Von?

  Yeah, it's bad.

• 55:09Speaker 02

  It is very bad.

• 55:10Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 55:11Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 55:11Theo Von?

Um, since you got into Amish, can you get a girlfriend and stuff like that? Or like, what are you allowed to do?

• 55:16Speaker 02

Yeah, I can get like, a girlfriend, like all that stuff.

• 55:19Theo Von?

But does she need to be Amish?

• 55:21Speaker 02

Preferably, yeah. But like, if I were to get a, a, like a girlfriend that was not Amish, would you have to become Amish? Or I would have to like, leave, like, the Amish?

• 55:31Theo Von?

Do you think that there are a lot of women out there who are willing to become Amish? Does that happen a lot?

• 55:35Speaker 02

Uh, I know, I know of one case where that is happening, and, you know, I, I don't know how often it happens, but it's, it's rare where, like, it actually goes through. I know a lot of people that wanna become Amish, but they're, they're not ready to make the, like, the final, like, the final step towards it.

• 55:53Theo Von?

  Hmm.

• 55:54Speaker 02

  So, but yeah.

• 55:55Theo Von?

What's the thing that keeps them away from that? Makes them, makes, makes people afraid to take that final step, do you think?

• 56:00Speaker 02

I think it's like, it's, I think it's the loss of, like, like your phone, the lights on the ceiling, the fans on the ceiling, the, like, the vents and holes in the ceiling, like, all that stuff, I think, and then, like, the couch, the TV, and then, whatever else, you know, like, whatever else Hohele, uh, use.

• 56:20Theo Von?

I- if you have an Amish wife, it, does a wife have to provide, like, food and sexuals and stuff for the husband? Or is it just, is it always negotiable, or does the wife have, like, a responsibility for kind of food and sexuals and stuff?

• 56:32Speaker 02

Yeah, so, the, the way, like, it's, everyone kind of accepts, like, their, like, it's just, uh, how do I say this? It's like, normal, and you're like, it's where, it's kind of like, it's where, it's, everyone has a mutual understanding of, like, what they have to do, right? Because, like, the woman, you know, cooks, cleans, you know, takes care of things around the house, and then, like, if she needs help, she'll ask, like, the husband, uh, for, like, help, and then usually the husband's, you know, gone most of the day, working, like, either building houses, plowing the fields, or cutting, like, lumber, or making cabinets, or even polishing cabinets, stuff like that.

• 57:11Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 57:12Speaker 02

Like, they help each other when they're... When they're like at like at home, like if if it needs, but yeah, like the like the wife does cooking, cleaning, take taking care of the kids.

• 57:23Theo Von?

  Got it.

• 57:23Speaker 02

And then stuff in the garden too.

• 57:26Theo Von?

Right here it says Amish women mainly focus on housekeeping, child rearing, gardening and food preparation. Many manage home finances, have their names on property deeds and control the family checkbook.

• 57:37Theo Von?

Women nurture the spiritual life of the children and are active in maintaining Amish cultural practices.

• 57:43Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 57:44Theo Von?

So women have a pretty strong voice in the Amish community.

• 57:46Speaker 02

Yeah, well, I'd say so, yeah.

• 57:49Theo Von?

Yeah, um, are Amish women good cooks? Like, do they make some cool stuff? Or what are some good Amish meals?

• 57:55Speaker 02

Oh, yeah, like the Amish, the Amish make, I'd say make some of the best food, like especially grandma. She had a lot of experience in the like in the field stuff, or Italian meaning like she has a lot of experience in like the field of cooking and stuff.

• 58:07Theo Von?

  Mm hmm.

• 58:07Speaker 02

Like their breadsticks, they're like out of this world.

• 58:11Theo Von?

  Are they?

• 58:11Speaker 02

They're really good. And then my mom's.

• 58:13Theo Von?

What do you put on them?

• 58:14Speaker 02

Ah, I'm not even quite sure.

• 58:16Theo Von?

Can you put butter on them or not?

• 58:18Speaker 02

Yeah, butter. Yeah, it looks exactly like that.

• 58:21Theo Von?

And can you put a little bit of salt on them? Do you have salt?

• 58:23Speaker 02

Ah, no, we don't put salt on them. They're like, they're garlic breadsticks.

• 58:26Theo Von?

Oh, so they already have garlic on them?

• 58:27Speaker 02

Yeah, they and they're and they're just, they're really good. And and my favorite meal, like, let's say we're doing a lot of stuff, like building something or like a frolic where like the whole community comes together and.

• 58:39Theo Von?

  A frolic it's called?

• 58:40Speaker 02

Yeah, that's like when the whole community comes together and built something like a barn.

• 58:44Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 58:44Speaker 02

Yeah, and then like they'll make, they'll make some either some chicken or some burgers with mashed potatoes, corn and like, I think you would call like, like, uh, it's like, like, uh, mac and cheese.

• 58:59Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 59:00Speaker 02

And then you put some, so what we do with our foods like hot, we put some applesauce on it, mix it up.

• 59:04Theo Von?

  Really?

• 59:05Speaker 02

Yeah, and then it's nice and cool, and pork and beans.

• 59:08Theo Von?

Oh, if the food's hot, you'll put applesauce on it?

• 59:10Speaker 02

Yeah, to like cool it down and stuff. So like the, that's like one of my favorite meals. And then even better, like if you have steak and stuff, like if you have steak, that's really good.

• 59:20Theo Von?

Yeah. And do you have dessert too?

• 59:22Speaker 02

Oh, we have, we have pretty good dessert too, like, like pies, uh.

• 59:26Theo Von?

Oh, I bet Amish pie is good.

• 59:28Speaker 02

  Yeah, they are.

• 59:29Theo Von?

Do you have sugar or don't you?

• 59:30Speaker 02

Yeah, they they put sugar in them. I'm not sure what they all put in them because I know how to make scrambled eggs and that's about it.

• 59:35Theo Von?

  Same.

• 59:36Speaker 02

Yeah, and yeah, they put, what is it? Like, uh.

• 59:42Theo Von?

What's a popular pie that you have or a popular dessert?

• 59:45Speaker 02

A popular pie is uh shoe fly pie is one of them and then peanut butter pie.

• 59:50Theo Von?

Shoe fly pie, what is it?

• 59:51Speaker 02

Yeah, that I I've not had it, I've not really, we don't have it very often. But another pie that's really good is mince pie, like uh pumpkin pie, that's really good. At like apple pie, that's really good.

• 1:00:04Theo Von?

  God, that's a good one.

• 1:00:05Speaker 02

  Like.

• 1:00:06Theo Von?

  I want that.

• 1:00:07Speaker 02

Like that stuff is pretty good. Yeah, that's my cousin right there.

• 1:00:11Theo Von?

Oh, really? I've seen this woman before. She's Amish.

• 1:00:13Speaker 02

  Yeah, no, she's ex-Amish.

• 1:00:15Theo Von?

  Oh, she's ex-Amish?

• 1:00:16Speaker 02

She used to be Amish, yeah. So she's my, she's my cousin, actually.

• 1:00:19Theo Von?

  Oh, wow.

• 1:00:20Speaker 02

Yeah, so I got, I guess, famous cousins too.

• 1:00:24Theo Von?

Um, what are the fears of having a girlfriend that's not Amish? Just that they won't understand the religion and the culture?

• 1:00:30Speaker 02

Like, like, the biggest fear would be like, that like the church or like the parents would find out. That's definitely the biggest fear.

• 1:00:38Theo Von?

But is it okay if she decides to join the church? It's okay?

• 1:00:40Speaker 02

Yeah, it is okay, but like for that to ha- that rarely ever happens. It's like, it's almost as rare as like the bishop leaving the community.

• 1:00:47Theo Von?

Got it. Would she be welcome if that happened?

• 1:00:49Speaker 02

Yeah, if she was, if she was fully Amish, yeah, she would be welcome. Now, she might get a little bit of looks in the beginning, but yeah, as long as she's fully Amish, that would be good.

• 1:00:58Theo Von?

Dude, she deserves the looks, probably.

• 1:01:00Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:01:01Theo Von?

You know what I'm saying? You can, you can handle a little bit of looks out of the gate. Can Amish people tickle each other or not? Is that, is that allowed or not?

• 1:01:07Speaker 02

Uh, yeah, like, like uh, like when we were little kids, we used to tickle each other.

• 1:01:12Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:12Speaker 02

Yeah, but like, I don't really tickle anyone.

• 1:01:15Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:16Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:01:17Theo Von?

Yeah, I don't think people should keep doing it, but I'm just making sure it's allowed when you're kids.

• 1:01:21Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:01:21Theo Von?

And do they play hide and go seek? Like, what kind of stuff do people do to pass the time?

• 1:01:25Speaker 02

Like either ride horses, the ponies, like uh pon- like pony cars and then also hide and like hide and seek, that's pretty fun. And then, oh yeah, we play board games or just play with cars, play with blocks. I, I used to play like underneath the porch or in the garden and I used to, we used to have a lot of, a lot of like cars and stuff.

• 1:01:47Theo Von?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:01:48Speaker 02

And I used to like pretend that it was like a whole world there. In the, in the garden. So mom didn't really like when I played in the garden when it was like all, all the corn was up, the potatoes. Like, I actually liked playing when it was corn, corn was up and then uh, the potatoes, cause it, it was like, it was way more possibilities for imagination. You could have a, a place here, a place there.

• 1:02:11Theo Von?

Yeah, just more creativity going on.

• 1:02:12Speaker 02

Yeah, and but if the, if it was, the garden didn't work out, or either that or just play under the porch. Like the porch was like,

• 1:02:19Theo Von?

  Oh yeah.

• 1:02:20Speaker 02

Like three feet high. So the older I got, the more, the more I hit my head on, up on the, up on the porch.

• 1:02:26Theo Von?

That's when it's time to get out.

• 1:02:27Speaker 02

Yeah, that's when I decided, you know, if I do play in, like, when I do play with cars and stuff, and out in the dirt, like the, the garden's the place to be.

• 1:02:36Theo Von?

  Yeah, for sure.

• 1:02:37Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:02:38Theo Von?

And do people start dating within the Amish culture at a certain age? Or is it kind of taboo? Or how does it work? Like, is there a dance like at school where you can invite a girl to a dance? Like, how does dating and that sort of like adolescent attraction kind of stuff like that? Where you trying to get, you know, you trying to uh, you know, meet a girl or if you have a first kiss? What's that? How's that whole universe in the Amish culture?

• 1:03:00Speaker 02

So like our school only goes until eighth grade. So we're out of school in like thirteen or fourteen.

• 1:03:04Theo Von?

  You're done with school completely?

• 1:03:05Speaker 02

Yeah, completely done. And then you go to work.

• 1:03:09Speaker 02

Yeah, so we didn't, we didn't, I don't even know what high school is or public school or, like, I've never been there, never ever. I wanna go one day.

• 1:03:17Theo Von?

High school's just doing drugs and try not to die of uh, driving while intoxicated.

• 1:03:23Speaker 02

Yeah, like, like if, if that happened, never happens for us, like our horse would just take us home.

• 1:03:28Theo Von?

  Right.

• 1:03:29Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:03:29Theo Von?

That's a Tesla. You basically have an original, you kind of have like one of those self-driving cars.

• 1:03:33Speaker 02

Cause if you fall asleep on your horse, you know, might not be the safest way, you know, cause you might, you know, go a little bit over on the road, but as long as the people with like steering wheels and stuff, they'll be, as long as they're like okay and stuff, the horse will like go home. And like, so the way it works for like dating, if you're like, what is it? So like sixteen and a half, like some, it depends on the parents. Like my mom and dad, like they weren't really allowed to like become like, date, like official boyfriend, girlfriend uh, until, like, until they were eighteen.

• 1:04:06Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:06Speaker 02

But like in our community, like right now, like, Like it basically happens whenever now, like

• 1:04:12Theo Von?

  Oh heck yeah.

• 1:04:13Speaker 02

As soon as you join like the room springer, like you can't and usually the way you meet and hang out is through singing, like after church or at like weekend parties. That's usually how it is.

• 1:04:24Theo Von?

So weekend parties are those, do those happen in your district or those happen off of property?

• 1:04:28Speaker 02

That it it all it varies where the where the Amish party is. Sometimes it happens when the like sometimes when the parents aren't home, we go to like uh we go to like their place and party there.

• 1:04:40Theo Von?

So at Amish parties, will people just like are people drinking and stuff like that? It's a little bit more like freewheeling?

• 1:04:45Speaker 02

Yeah, you're like drinking and then like even like the vape things popped up too, like.

• 1:04:51Theo Von?

Do Amish like to vape or not?

• 1:04:53Speaker 02

  Some do, yeah.

• 1:04:54Theo Von?

  Yeah, I knew it.

• 1:04:55Speaker 02

  Yeah, some do.

• 1:04:56Theo Von?

  I knew it.

• 1:04:57Speaker 02

But also like cigarettes and then sometimes we go like, oh.

• 1:05:02Theo Von?

A pipe too. A lot of Amish look like they would smoke a pipe.

• 1:05:05Speaker 02

Older, the older ones too, but they like the ones that are, the younger ones usually don't, they usually stick to cigarettes and stuff like that. But sometimes like we'll, we'll go to like an ex Amish person's house and party up there and it's, it's a lot of fun.

• 1:05:18Theo Von?

It is? And when do you, if you, if you're doing rum springer, when do you have to be back at home? Like, or do you leave on Friday? Do you have to be back on Sunday night? Or what is the rules kinda?

• 1:05:24Speaker 02

Now, it depends, it varies from family to family. Let's say you have church tomorrow, you probably want to be home like you know, before the morning so you get a little bit of sleep or there's not, not church. You can come home or you can't, just, it just like depends. But usually like when I, when I do it, I usually don't come home until like later Sunday.

• 1:05:45Theo Von?

  Okay.

• 1:05:45Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:05:46Theo Von?

And do they drug test you or whatever if you're Amish? Do you have to get drug tested?

• 1:05:49Speaker 02

No, no, we don't have to do any like drug tests.

• 1:05:51Theo Von?

  Really?

• 1:05:52Speaker 02

Yeah, like no tests and stuff.

• 1:05:53Theo Von?

Damn, cause y'all got yourselves on year-long Halloween going on out there in the fields. I'm like.

• 1:05:58Speaker 02

Yeah, like sometimes, like sometimes in the woods, the fields, like just depends where the spot is.

• 1:06:03Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:03Speaker 02

Yeah, but now like all Amish that like party and stuff, like our number one way of like talking to each other is through like Snapchat.

• 1:06:11Theo Von?

  They've really taken over Snapchat?

• 1:06:13Speaker 02

Yeah, like if you, yeah, if they have an Amish, like a young Amish person that is roughly my age, if they have a phone, like a smartphone, they have Snapchat.

• 1:06:22Theo Von?

  Damn.

• 1:06:23Speaker 02

  Yeah, so.

• 1:06:24Theo Von?

When was the first time you saw a phone or a screen? Do you remember?

• 1:06:27Speaker 02

Uh, I think it was one time, it, it was not the first time, but I, I remember this one time when one of my ex Amish uncles was at our place with his girlfriend and. And she let me look like, look on her phone and I was like sitting right beside her and she, she grabbed out her phone. She like started texting someone and she was, she was flying through like the keyboard and stuff. You were like swiping the lines and all of a sudden words popped up. Like it was like, it was like bop, bop, bop, bop, the words like almost as fast as you can like talk and stuff. I was like really surprised. So that's like, that's like the, like, I'd say like the first, some of the first memories. Seeing a phone.

• 1:07:06Theo Von?

Um, what things are forbidden in you guys' culture kind of?

• 1:07:09Speaker 02

Ah, a lot of things are like electricity, um, like having a smartphone. We're allowed to have like phones for like our businesses, like phone shacks and stuff. And then TVs, what else? Like ba- pretty much anything that like doesn't have, like, that, that requires like electricity and stuff. And also like certain, certain color of like shirts, dresses, if it's too bright. It can also be like, like, like you can, the bishop or deacon will talk to you about it.

• 1:07:42Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:07:43Speaker 02

About like it being the wrong color.

• 1:07:45Theo Von?

  Too flashy?

• 1:07:46Speaker 02

Too flashy, yeah. And also if your haircut's like way short, so my, my haircut's like, like okay, cause my mom gives me a haircut every time.

• 1:07:54Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:07:54Speaker 02

Yeah, so I've never actually had a different kind of haircut.

• 1:07:58Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah, beautiful.

• 1:07:59Speaker 02

Yeah, so I'm, I almost have a mole. You, you could probably have an Amish haircut too.

• 1:08:03Theo Von?

Oh, yeah, I think I have a little bit.

• 1:08:05Speaker 02

Yeah. You just let that, just like the hair in front of the ear, girl, you know?

• 1:08:10Theo Von?

  I could have been Amish.

• 1:08:11Speaker 02

Block a little bit of the sound of like to the ear and stuff, yeah.

• 1:08:15Theo Von?

I would have enjoyed being Amish, I think, man.

• 1:08:18Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:08:18Theo Von?

How are regular people and Amish people different from each other? Have you gathered? How, how do they seem different from each other?

• 1:08:24Speaker 02

So like, uh, the main thing I've noticed is like, uh, like a lot of Amish are, when they're in public, it seems like they're like bit, like bit more respectful, I guess. Another thing that's, um, big, I guess, uh, like, so if we, like, if we did something that was big and wrong, like some one time my little brother, he stamped out lots of corn down in our cornfield and And he got a spanking from that, like, that's, I guess that's the difference, cuz I see a lot of kids don't like, I guess they don't get spankings anymore.

• 1:08:56Theo Von?

Yeah, they don't do it anymore.

• 1:08:57Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:08:57Theo Von?

They should. I mean, I don't think kids should get abused, but sometimes a spanking is okay, I think.

• 1:09:01Speaker 02

Yeah, cuz this is like, like getting beat up and then, cuz like, cuz we never got like beat up or anything, but like if we did something bad, we got like, like three cracks, it was like a, like a bell or something. But, but we never got abused and stuff, so, like, just, I guess, discipline.

• 1:09:21Theo Von?

So, discipline is something that seems stronger in the Amish community?

• 1:09:23Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:09:24Theo Von?

What are some crimes that they have? Are there any crimes that are popular in Amish land?

• 1:09:29Speaker 02

I'm not quite sure, maybe, maybe like taxes sometimes, cuz I don't, some people don't like file taxes and stuff, like, cuz the only tax that we get, like, that are we free from, that Amish don't get taxed, it's like social security tax, so when we get old, the government doesn't like pay us and stuff.

• 1:09:45Theo Von?

Oh, they don't, so you don't have to pay into that?

• 1:09:46Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:09:47Theo Von?

  Wow, I wonder why not?

• 1:09:48Speaker 02

When you join the church, uh, you, you get like the bishop and the government, I guess, work together to where you're like exempt from the social security tax. But that's like the only tax that I know of that you're like exempt from. Other than that, like if, but if you don't file taxes, cuz I know some don't. But other than that, we have to pay all the other taxes.

• 1:10:09Theo Von?

The Amish are exempt from social security and Medicare taxes, FICA, if they formally reject benefits and file for exemption due to their belief in mutual community support. Wow, so you guys feel like you don't need that, you support each other, huh?

• 1:10:21Speaker 02

Yeah, a lot of Amish don't have insurance for stuff too, and, uh, so when.

• 1:10:27Theo Von?

Well, hell no, I don't think you could insure them, you know?

• 1:10:30Speaker 02

More for business, I don't, I think for businesses, they somehow do what I think, but for like, let's say you like, let's say you fall off a roof or something, you hurt yourself. And then, let's say you go to the hospital, because I know the hospital, like, they, they charge quite a bit.

• 1:10:43Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:10:44Speaker 02

They, they, I don't know where they come up with the crazy numbers, but.

• 1:10:47Theo Von?

They'll take you through the rumspringa.

• 1:10:48Speaker 02

They will. They'll drag, they're like dragging.

• 1:10:50Theo Von?

  They'll drag you, dude.

• 1:10:51Speaker 02

Yeah, it's like dragging behind the buggy.

• 1:10:53Theo Von?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:10:54Speaker 02

Or like a horse runs away and you're trying to hang on, you're like scraping across gravel and stuff. But yeah, but like, like all the community helps pay for that, like if that would help.

• 1:11:04Theo Von?

I got it. So there's a lot of community support.

• 1:11:06Speaker 02

  There's a lot of.

• 1:11:07Theo Von?

At any point in somebody's life. So you guys might have a day where you're like, Mr. So-and-so needs help, or Miss So-and-so needs help, let's go help them?

• 1:11:14Speaker 02

  Yep, that's how it works.

• 1:11:15Theo Von?

That's a big part of your life.

• 1:11:16Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:11:16Theo Von?

Like, for example, what are things you would go help a neighbor do?

• 1:11:19Speaker 02

Ah, like, really with anything, like putting away hay, we've done that lots of times, or like building a barn, like, we've done that too. Or like even a house too, like if they need a he- help, like a day or so, we'll come together and help each other. And I know back in the day, ah, we used to help each other, ah, like, like someone does hay and then everyone, everyone helps this person do hay, then that person also, like, it's just a group effort, this person, this person, this person, like all around the community. But that doesn't really happen, happen anymore, like, you know, like most, most, ah, what is it? Oh yeah, most Amish, they don't, they still farm a little bit, but most of them do like construction or like building cabinets or.

• 1:12:02Theo Von?

  Oh, it's changed.

• 1:12:03Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:12:04Theo Von?

So the Amish are farming less than they used to?

• 1:12:06Speaker 02

Yeah, because like it's, it's not as sustainable anymore.

• 1:12:09Theo Von?

  Right.

• 1:12:09Speaker 02

When my dad was growing up, all they do is farm and milk cows.

• 1:12:13Theo Von?

  Hmm.

• 1:12:14Speaker 02

Like they milk a lot of cows.

• 1:12:15Theo Von?

So, wh- what are some popular products, like you said, like cabinets and stuff, you see a lot of those, you see cabinets, you see furnaces sometimes?

• 1:12:22Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:12:23Theo Von?

I don't know if that's a real thing, or that's just something that is made up and they claim that Amish do it?

• 1:12:27Speaker 02

Like, like you mean, like, well, like furnaces? Now, I, I'm not sure quite where those come from, but like the furnaces, because there's welling to it, now they might, they might get it from like a. I'm like a person that's not Amish.

• 1:12:41Theo Von?

  Got it.

• 1:12:42Speaker 02

  Get him from there.

• 1:12:42Theo Von?

The biggest shift in Amish economic life in the last century has been from agriculture to non-farm businesses. In the early nineteen hundreds, nearly all Amish families depended on farming for their livelihood. Today, only about ten percent do, with the majority now involved in various trades, crafts, retail. And then for, yeah, what are some of those? Construction and woodworking, carpentry, cabinet making, and now famous Amish furniture shops. That is a big thing now, huh?

• 1:13:09Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:13:09Theo Von?

  Quilt making, sewing-related trades.

• 1:13:12Speaker 02

Yeah, like selling Amish food too and quilts and a lot of stuff like that.

• 1:13:17Theo Von?

It's a big part of the culture up there.

• 1:13:19Speaker 02

  Yeah, it is.

• 1:13:19Theo Von?

And how, will you guys have like places on your property where people come and buy them? Or do you take them off property and people buy them there?

• 1:13:26Speaker 02

Usually, like if you have a greenhouse or like a, like a place where, where like the, like where you can buy like food and stuff, that's usually in like a little building on the property, so.

• 1:13:40Theo Von?

  Like a market?

• 1:13:41Speaker 02

Yep, like kinda like a market. Or like there's a farmer's market where, where Amish go to like a town for a day and they, they bring all the baked goods and, you know, stuff like that. And there's also a lot of Amish places, like a lot of places where Amish are. Where it's like tours, they offer tours and then they bring them around and then it's kinda like the Amish mall, but it's like, like the stores are like really far apart from each other, like a couple of miles. But yeah, they bring them around and they, they get to see an Amish, you know, Amish farm. I think they're called like Amish tours and like tourist stuff like that.

• 1:14:11Theo Von?

  Okay.

• 1:14:12Speaker 02

And then, and then you can like stop at the Amish place and like buy something from like the store and stuff.

• 1:14:18Theo Von?

  Got it.

• 1:14:18Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:14:19Theo Von?

Yeah, we've been up there before and stopped at some places that I think were having cheese and ice cream maybe even.

• 1:14:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:14:24Theo Von?

  I'm not sure.

• 1:14:25Speaker 02

But like usually we only like make ice cream through the winter because you just grab the snow out of the ground and, put it in a bucket and.

• 1:14:32Theo Von?

Could you make ice cream if you needed to?

• 1:14:34Speaker 02

Yeah, like if it was, if we had ice or something cold that you put around the, around the thing where you make ice cream, because you gotta crank the ice cream. And I like, you crank and then the thing in the middle spins around the ice and.

• 1:14:46Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:14:47Speaker 02

Yeah, so like Amish ice cream is pretty good.

• 1:14:50Theo Von?

What music do you guys listen to? I know you said in the beginning, there's some different songs. People will sneak in some Def Leppard. But if not, you guys just sing a lot? Is there a lot of Amish songs and dancing as well or no?

• 1:15:00Speaker 02

Uh, no. In our community, there's not really any dancing. There's the like, the only like, the only music, uh, songs that are really a louder would be like, like Chairman Hymns. But then like on the, uh, then sometimes we like sneak out on the weekends and stuff and, and, uh,

• 1:15:16Theo Von?

Listening to some Soulja Boy or something?

• 1:15:18Speaker 02

Yeah, like, like, uh, like, what is it? Like Def Leppard, Bon Chovi, you know? Lot of Amish, like rock and roll. And then I guess house EDM music. And then also a lot of country like Garth Brooks, Mark and Wallen.

• 1:15:34Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:35Speaker 02

People like that. But I also listen to like a little bit of rap stuff. Like Amish Paradise is, that's a pretty good song.

• 1:15:41Theo Von?

  Amish Paradise?

• 1:15:42Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:15:42Theo Von?

  Keeps man, who sang that?

• 1:15:44Speaker 02

Uh, Weird Al Yankovic, I did.

• 1:15:45Theo Von?

Oh, did he? That makes perfect sense. That's groovy.

• 1:15:48Speaker 02

Amish Paradise, that's a pretty, I love that song.

• 1:15:51Theo Von?

  That's a banger, huh?

• 1:15:52Speaker 02

It is a banger, yeah. He looks a little bit mad there, but it is a pretty good song.

• 1:15:57Theo Von?

He probably pissed his horse ran off or whatever.

• 1:15:59Speaker 02

Something like that, because like his horse was pretty good at backing all the way at the end. Yeah. And then also like, I like to listen a little bit of like rap stuff too.

• 1:16:09Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah?

• 1:16:10Speaker 02

Yeah, like Gunna, a little bit of, uh, Gunna.

• 1:16:12Theo Von?

Oh, you listen to some Gunna?

• 1:16:14Speaker 02

Yeah, like, uh, like I don't really listen to what he says. I looked at the lyrics like a couple of times and like there are, there's, the lyrics aren't, aren't the best, but like I like the way it sounds like, like the, like the, like the, it sounds like, like wind chimes. And then it just, it sounds very melodic.

• 1:16:32Theo Von?

  He's a vibe, yeah. He's got it.

• 1:16:35Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:16:35Theo Von?

Um, what else was I thinking about? Where else can we go from here? We're almost done. Let me think about what else we can talk about. You know what I'm gonna do, Timmy? I'm gonna take that down and keep this up here.

• 1:16:45Speaker 02

  That's pretty cool.

• 1:16:47Theo Von?

I'm just gonna make sure that you're always here in spirit, dude.

• 1:16:49Speaker 02

  I appreciate that.

• 1:16:50Theo Von?

You bet, man. What, I wanna ask you something. Um, with the risk of people leaving the community and stuff, are families still very close, or do they only get closer after people join the church? Does that make any sense to you?

• 1:17:02Speaker 02

I think, I think it does. So, like, most of the time, the, like, the family's very close, unless, like, when the, when the kids and the parents, like, like, they don't agree on stuff, and then they leave, that's like the, like, the time when, like, they don't, they're not as close anymore. It, it depends on the person, I guess, and the parents, too.

• 1:17:21Theo Von?

Is it pretty heartbreaking when that happens in the community?

• 1:17:24Speaker 02

Yeah, it's, it's like, when I was younger, I was like, when someone left, it's almost like, it's almost like someone died. Not quite, but it almost felt like that. But since I got older, I understand it a bit more, and it's, uh, it's not as bad as, like, it used to be, so.

• 1:17:38Theo Von?

Yeah. Wow, that's you right there?

• 1:17:40Speaker 02

Yeah, I was, I was like, really skinny when I was, when I was younger. I'm still kinda skinny, you know?

• 1:17:45Theo Von?

You look like that guy in Kingpin a little. You seen Kingpin?

• 1:17:48Speaker 02

  No idea what that is.

• 1:17:49Theo Von?

It's like an Amish movie. It's like a historical Amish film or whatever.

• 1:17:52Speaker 02

Oh, I almost look like that dude? Yeah.

• 1:17:55Theo Von?

  When he's younger.

• 1:17:56Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:17:56Theo Von?

  Not now.

• 1:17:57Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 1:17:58Theo Von?

When he's younger, but he's classy guy. He's a great guy.

• 1:18:00Speaker 02

Yeah, he looks like a great guy, too.

• 1:18:02Theo Von?

  Oh yeah, Randy Quaid.

• 1:18:03Speaker 02

He's got like, a big beard now.

• 1:18:05Theo Von?

  Yeah, yeah. He's doing okay.

• 1:18:06Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:18:07Theo Von?

Um, I'm a fan of his. Um, what have you decided about Rumspringer and what you're gonna do with your family and the church and stuff? Have you made any decisions yet?

• 1:18:15Speaker 02

Uh, like, like, not yet. Like, I, the final, the final decision will probably be in, like, probably within like, two years or so.

• 1:18:24Theo Von?

  Okay.

• 1:18:24Speaker 02

And then, I, it depends if I leave, or, you know, join the church, and, well, right now, you actually can't really join the church, 'cause, like, there's no bishop. You can't, you can join other churches that are like, a little bit away, in a different district. But like, yeah, it'd probably be like, two years until I, you know, like, make my final decision, 'cause it's a kind of a big decision.

• 1:18:42Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:18:43Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:18:43Theo Von?

Uh, what would be the thing you think that would draw you out of the faith, that would draw you out of the church and out of the district?

• 1:18:50Speaker 02

Uh, I would think like, like, if I wanted to do something, like, something that would like, something like, something I'm doing right now, like this podcast, like, something worldly and...

• 1:19:03Speaker 02

They'd probably come down on me for like doing something like that, I guess would drive me away a little bit. Cause I don't know, it feels a little bit like, a little bit restrictive, but like, I guess that's the only thing I would think.

• 1:19:17Theo Von?

But you don't feel like doing this podcast will mess up your opportunity to go back or come or leave, huh?

• 1:19:22Speaker 02

No, I don't think it, I don't think it will.

• 1:19:24Theo Von?

Okay, good. I don't want that to happen, man. I want you to be able to make the best choice for yourself no matter what. It sounds like a really beautiful community, is it?

• 1:19:30Speaker 02

  Yeah, it's, it's very beautiful, I'd say.

• 1:19:34Theo Von?

It sounds like you have a lot of like, uh, community, a lot of sense of togetherness, you know? A lot of, uh, like, um, you feel, do you feel a strong sense of purpose being Amish?

• 1:19:45Speaker 02

Uh, yeah, like you, like, uh, kind of uphold the honor, you know, work hard. You know, the harder you work, the better, because you get, you, you stay in shape and then the more you can help out is always better, because I love helping out people and making people stay. That's like one of my favorite things to do. I like doing that. So, it's a lot of fun.

• 1:20:11Theo Von?

Yeah, I think it's important, you know? I think that's one way we really fill ourselves up is like doing something for somebody else, you know, it feels good.

• 1:20:17Speaker 02

  Yeah, it's like.

• 1:20:17Theo Von?

And you seem like you get to do a lot of that in your community, so there's probably a strong sense of feeling of like doing good.

• 1:20:23Speaker 02

  Yeah, there is.

• 1:20:24Theo Von?

If you guys are helping each other out a lot.

• 1:20:25Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:20:26Theo Von?

Are siblings really close in your community, or is that kind of not?

• 1:20:29Speaker 02

  You mean the siblings?

• 1:20:31Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:20:31Speaker 02

Yeah, usually like the siblings are usually close, you know, not like weird close, you know, just like, just like brother and brother.

• 1:20:37Theo Von?

  Legally close or whatever?

• 1:20:38Speaker 02

Yeah, like legally close. So, usually the brothers and the sisters, uh, they're usually, they keep the like, the sisters are closer to themselves and the brothers are like closer to themselves.

• 1:20:50Theo Von?

  For sure.

• 1:20:50Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:20:51Theo Von?

  For sure.

• 1:20:52Speaker 02

Here's my, here's my little brother.

• 1:20:54Theo Von?

Oh, that's him right there, eh?

• 1:20:55Speaker 02

Yeah, I, I, like, he, like, he doesn't, like, he doesn't really.

• 1:21:01Speaker 02

Uh, like, he probably wouldn't care if I put his, like, face up on, like, social media and stuff. But, yeah, I blurred it out. I put, like, a thing over his eyes.

• 1:21:08Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah, out of respect.

• 1:21:09Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:21:10Theo Von?

That's fun, though, you guys. So a lot of times when you're Amish, you're just driving around, hanging out, telling stories and stuff?

• 1:21:15Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:21:15Theo Von?

Making each other laugh a lot?

• 1:21:16Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:21:17Theo Von?

  Are you allowed to laugh?

• 1:21:18Speaker 02

Yeah, you're allowed to laugh. Like, we laugh, like, we, like, drink coffee and laugh and, like, at work, at work, we're laughing a lot of time. We talk and, and because, like, when you're, like, I don't know, like, if, like, not Amish people, I don't know what they do at, like, when, when they, like, work, they, do they, like, talk to each other and laugh and stuff?

• 1:21:37Theo Von?

Yeah, they do, I think, a decent amount at a lot of jobs.

• 1:21:40Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:21:40Theo Von?

Probably jobs that are more, like, if you're doing construction, things like that, contracting, things where you're building stuff, working together, where there's team opportunity, there's a lot of laughter, dude.

• 1:21:50Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:21:50Theo Von?

But if you're just sitting at a desk by yourself, you're probably just losing your mind.

• 1:21:54Speaker 02

Yeah, that would be, that would be kinda sad, like, being inside all day and, you know, under the, under the lights and stuff.

• 1:22:00Theo Von?

Oh, yeah. I think there's something that's kind of, like, it doesn't feel very human about it.

• 1:22:04Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:22:04Theo Von?

Uh, are there a lot of people on antidepressants and stuff that are Amish or no?

• 1:22:08Speaker 02

Uh, not that I know of. There might be, like, like, maybe, every, like, here, here, and maybe way over there, but not that I know of, no.

• 1:22:18Theo Von?

Do people seem depressed a lot or not really?

• 1:22:20Speaker 02

Uh, most of them don't. Most of them don't. But then you have, you, then you also have sometimes, uh, like, people that are, like, what do you call those people that are, like, super depressed? Like, sometimes they're, like, super depressed.

• 1:22:31Theo Von?

  Oh, um...

• 1:22:33Speaker 02

They're, they're almost like, they're almost like the water when it gets rough. They're, like, up and down a lot.

• 1:22:37Theo Von?

  Oh, bipolar kind of?

• 1:22:38Speaker 02

Yeah, bipolar. Like, we sometimes, like, I don't have a person that has, and, like, it's kinda crazy.

• 1:22:46Theo Von?

Some studies have found Amish depression rates to be one-fifth to one-tenth of mainstream society, with strong family ties and community support cited as protective factors. That's unbelievable.

• 1:22:56Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:22:56Theo Von?

  One-fifth to one-tenth is insane, brother. That's a, I mean, that's a huge difference.

• 1:23:01Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:23:01Theo Von?

Strong family ties, robust social networks, work ethic, and especially religious faith are seen as major mental health protective factors. Um, will you guys pray together a lot, just with friends? Like, if you see them somewhere, would you, is that a common practice?

• 1:23:14Speaker 02

No, like, like, we, we only do it like at the table.

• 1:23:17Theo Von?

  Got it.

• 1:23:18Speaker 02

But like, I know some families do, like, pray more than we do. We, we should probably do it more.

• 1:23:25Theo Von?

I think that's how we all feel.

• 1:23:27Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:23:27Theo Von?

  Do you have Valentine's Day?

• 1:23:28Speaker 02

Oh, yeah, we have Valentine's Day at school, so what happens in Valentine's Day is, uh, at school, so when that happens, we basically, we put like things on a paper and we put it into a hat and then we mix it all up and someone walks around with like, and then you reach in and you pick out a name and if you got that name, then that's your valen- like your Valentine, you gotta like switch lunch pails and then you also have like send a Valentine with, uh, in with them.

• 1:23:56Theo Von?

And can it be a boy or a girl?

• 1:23:57Speaker 02

Yeah, it can be like, like either way.

• 1:23:59Theo Von?

  Got it.

• 1:24:00Speaker 02

Yeah, so it's like nothing, uh, uh, it's like, it's probably way different from like, like, uh, from non-amish and public schools, cause I'm guessing they're like, like, non-amish and public schools, it would have to be like, uh, like a boy and a girl, right?

• 1:24:15Theo Von?

Yeah, but in Yal's culture, it's just whatever.

• 1:24:18Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, it's, it's crazy and the way we do it is like just the main, the reason we do it is mainly your friends, you give your friends a Valentine and then the, then you also switch like lunch pails and then the moms will usually put something special in there like an X or candy bar or and my mom used to buy like those things from Walmart, those like big red hearts and then send that with to them.

• 1:24:41Theo Von?

Oh, yeah, that's nice. Moms do that.

• 1:24:43Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:24:44Theo Von?

  That's a nice thing.

• 1:24:45Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:24:45Theo Von?

Um, what other holidays? Do you have Halloween?

• 1:24:49Speaker 02

Uh, no, we, we, uh, we don't have Halloween, but I've had the, before I went to Roam Spring, uh, the neighbors, uh, our non-amish neighbors, they picked me up and then, then, uh, they put me like in a prison, prison costume thing, like I had black and white stripes all over me and like we went out and gathering candy. Like, you just walk up to these people's houses and they have candy for you.

• 1:25:12Theo Von?

  I know.

• 1:25:12Speaker 02

Yeah, it's, it's crazy. Halloween's like really crazy, but a lot of them, a lot, a lot of Amish like don't, don't celebrate because like apparently that's like, uh, The occasion of like Halloween is like something to do with like the devil, I'm not quite sure.

• 1:25:27Theo Von?

Yeah, I know what you're talking about. It's a pagan holiday.

• 1:25:29Speaker 02

Yeah, um, cause they have some people like real scary stuff in the yard. They got like snakes and then these these dead people with like skulls and stuff.

• 1:25:37Theo Von?

Yeah, stuff hanging from trees, deceased adults and children.

• 1:25:41Speaker 02

Yeah, they're like bone stuff. I don't know where they get the bones. So like dig them out or something?

• 1:25:45Theo Von?

It's probably something. They probably insider trading with some dog or something.

• 1:25:48Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:25:49Theo Von?

What is something that you want people to know about Amish people that are a view of them or you think that's something that's incorrect? Before we get out of here.

• 1:25:56Speaker 02

  Like a misconception?

• 1:25:57Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:25:57Speaker 02

Yeah, so like the one of the biggest misconceptions I see all the time with like me being online and stuff, it's like crazy. Like all of all the stuff like people, people say I'm not Amish. I don't do, I don't do this way. Uh, there's actually two misconceptions I can say like number one is like a lot of Amish kids my age have like phones, like they hide it from their parents and stuff and where it's like they have like they have like like they have some electronics and stuff where they, but they have to like keep it on the low and stuff.

• 1:26:28Theo Von?

And what will they do? Bury it in a field somewhere where they hide it behind a hog or something like?

• 1:26:32Speaker 02

Yeah, like hide it in the barn, like the back of the bucky, sometimes in a culvert and hope it doesn't rain.

• 1:26:37Theo Von?

  Oof.

• 1:26:37Speaker 02

Yeah, so that's one thing like a lot of Amish have phones and every pretty much every Amish that has a phone that's like my age, that's out for business and stuff is like they have Snapchat. We'd like, that's how we

• 1:26:49Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:26:50Speaker 02

Like communicate. That's like our new new like messenger pitch.

• 1:26:53Theo Von?

  It's your Underground Railroad kinda?

• 1:26:55Speaker 02

Yeah, it's Underground Railroad. I was thinking about, you know, starting Underground Bucky Races, but I first gotta dig the tunnel and stuff.

• 1:27:00Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:27:01Speaker 02

But like another misconception, you know, about the Amish is like, uh, what was it? Oh yeah, about me not being Amish because I have a, I have a phone. Uh, that's cause like another thing that's um, Like huge, like really big, cause like there's Amish in movies and they're always, they always turn on the butter.

• 1:27:21Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:27:21Speaker 02

And basically, they're living without electricity. Now, there's so many, there's so many different like Amish. Cause like what you hear from me, like from where I came from, is will not be the same from an Amish in Indiana, Ohio, or like Pennsylvania. It's, it's, there's so many different ones, like little different ways.

• 1:27:41Theo Von?

  Different branches of it.

• 1:27:42Speaker 02

Yeah, lots of different branches. And I, I would, I would say like, there's not a single community that's like exactly the same. There's always little bit of rules and there's so many different branches of it where they wear bit, bit different clothes, bit different hats, do things a bit differently. Cause I've had people say like, this is not Amish and then they like write a detailed description. But I guess they, they probably don't know better that there's like lots of different ones, cause there's, there's like lots, there's speech, he's war trooper, new order, old order. There's, there's so many different branches.

• 1:28:13Theo Von?

Oh my gosh, that sounds like a bunch of people on the Warped Tour.

• 1:28:16Speaker 02

Yeah. Yeah, it's like, so, so when the Anabaptists became a thing, they basically like, they were like a minority for a little bit.

• 1:28:23Theo Von?

Have you ever seen Back to the Future?

• 1:28:25Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:28:26Theo Von?

  Dang, boy.

• 1:28:27Speaker 02

What? Is that, what, what's that?

• 1:28:30Theo Von?

I think you would like it. And I think it's a, I think it's something that is Amish appropriate. I don't think it's too crazy.

• 1:28:35Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:28:36Theo Von?

I think you could handle it. Have you ever seen Family Man with Nicolas Cage?

• 1:28:40Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:28:41Theo Von?

Do you know who Nicolas Cage is?

• 1:28:43Speaker 02

  Uh, I'm not quite sure.

• 1:28:46Theo Von?

  Wow.

• 1:28:47Speaker 02

Wow, so there's, these are like movies and stuff?

• 1:28:50Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:28:51Speaker 02

  Oh, wow.

• 1:28:51Theo Von?

Family Man's one of my favorites, dude.

• 1:28:53Speaker 02

  So what, what's that about?

• 1:28:55Theo Von?

It's about this guy and he's very like rich and fancy and stuff.

• 1:28:58Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:28:58Theo Von?

And then one day, he, he kind of, uh, something happens where he goes back into his life like 20 years earlier.

• 1:29:06Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:29:07Theo Von?

And he makes a different decision to stay with a girl that he was in love with instead of leaving.

• 1:29:10Speaker 02

He, he goes like back in time?

• 1:29:12Theo Von?

Yeah, he goes back in time. Like he doesn't realize, he falls asleep, it's on Christmas, he falls asleep.

• 1:29:16Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 1:29:16Theo Von?

On Christmas Eve and he wakes up and he's back in a different life he'd had, he would have had.

• 1:29:21Speaker 02

  Whoa.

• 1:29:21Theo Von?

If he had made a different choice to stay in love instead of to go for. Um, like, uh, the big job in the fancy apartment.

• 1:29:28Speaker 02

Oh, he went for the money over people.

• 1:29:30Theo Von?

He went for the money over people and he had a choice. And he goes back in time and now suddenly he wakes up and he's in a house with this lady that he was in love with. And but now they have like two kids and they like, they don't live in like, he was living in like this fancy downtown place with like a butler and somebody that would like chew your gum for you and just tell you what it would taste like. You don't even have to chew it.

• 1:29:49Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 1:29:49Theo Von?

  That rich.

• 1:29:50Speaker 02

  That, that's like super rich.

• 1:29:52Theo Von?

  It's too much.

• 1:29:53Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:29:53Theo Von?

I'll chew my own gum, you know what I'm saying?

• 1:29:55Speaker 02

I'll, I wanna chew my own gum, you know, drink my own water.

• 1:29:58Theo Von?

  Yeah.

• 1:29:58Speaker 02

  Yeah, stuff like that.

• 1:29:59Theo Von?

Yeah, for sure. I wanna at least do that. Let me do at least the low, low hanging fruit.

• 1:30:04Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:30:04Theo Von?

But anyway, um, so then he gets that experience and then one day he wakes back up and he's back in his original life.

• 1:30:10Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:30:10Theo Von?

And he hates it. And so he, he drives off from his original life to go find the girl and see what's going on. And, um, and then you figure out what happens from there.

• 1:30:21Speaker 02

Wow, that's, that's crazy. Almost sounds like that almost, when he went back in time and stuff, like, or like, like, what hap, what would have happened if he would have like stayed with that girl? That's almost like, uh, that's almost like me, like deciding if I wanna, you know, stay Amish or, you know, leave the Amish, it's, um.

• 1:30:36Theo Von?

Yeah, it's like a rum springer.

• 1:30:37Speaker 02

Yeah, it's like really hard decision. Yeah.

• 1:30:40Theo Von?

What factors do you think will go into you choosing? What do you think are good factors to help you decide or do you think about that?

• 1:30:45Speaker 02

Uh, I think it's, uh, what, what I'll, what I'll, what I will all see from like the outside world. And like, I'll probably compare the two and see, you know, which one I like, you know? I, I'll, I like the Amish lifestyle, the food and all that stuff is good. Like the only thing right now that I don't like too much are the rules a little bit.

• 1:31:04Theo Von?

  Oh, yeah?

• 1:31:04Speaker 02

Yeah, but that's what rum spring is for you, to break them.

• 1:31:07Theo Von?

Get out there and break them, boy. Do you have any plans to go to any special events coming up while you're on rum spring? Any football games, anything like that?

• 1:31:13Speaker 02

The only special event I've coming up is actually this weekend. I'm gonna go, go on a plane for the first time. Yeah, and jump out of it.

• 1:31:23Theo Von?

  No, really?

• 1:31:24Speaker 02

Yeah, I'm gonna like, cuz like, let's say something goes wrong when you're landing, so I wanna like be off the plane, you know, when it's up in the air.

• 1:31:31Theo Von?

  Yeah, for sure.

• 1:31:32Speaker 02

  And go skydiving.

• 1:31:33Theo Von?

Dude, that's gonna be sick. Are you geeked?

• 1:31:35Speaker 02

I, I'm like really excited, so this week is, I think this is a week I'll never forget.

• 1:31:41Theo Von?

  Wow.

• 1:31:41Speaker 02

Really, really crazy. So, yeah, no, no one knows this, I haven't told anyone, and so.

• 1:31:47Theo Von?

  I won't say anything, yeah.

• 1:31:48Speaker 02

  It's, it's crazy, let's go skydiving.

• 1:31:51Theo Von?

  It's cool.

• 1:31:52Speaker 02

For the first time. But I think, don't they like put like, they like strap a person on the back of you?

• 1:31:56Theo Von?

They put a guy on you, yeah. I'd just tell him you're not interested before you guys jump.

• 1:31:59Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:32:00Theo Von?

  Just say, look.

• 1:32:00Speaker 02

  I'm not interested, yeah.

• 1:32:02Theo Von?

  I'm here for the jump.

• 1:32:02Speaker 02

I'm here for the jump only, yeah. Just as you, I don't want him getting any ideas.

• 1:32:06Theo Von?

  Yeah, no ideas at all.

• 1:32:07Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:32:07Theo Von?

Like when we land, it's over.

• 1:32:09Speaker 02

Yeah, right. That's what, that's what the plan is, and, cuz I was thinking, I was talking to my cool athlete, I was thinking, you know, that would be a really crazy story, you know, the first airplane ride you ever go into, you just decided, you know, I don't wanna, I just gotta jump out, you know?

• 1:32:26Theo Von?

  I'm outta here.

• 1:32:26Speaker 02

  I'm outta here, yeah.

• 1:32:27Theo Von?

So it'll be the first plane you've ever been in, and then you're out of it?

• 1:32:30Speaker 02

  I'm out of it, yeah.

• 1:32:31Theo Von?

  Wow.

• 1:32:32Speaker 02

And then like, like same way with a podcast, I decided, you know, the first podcast I ever be on would be Theo Ron's, cuz you're a pretty cool dude.

• 1:32:41Theo Von?

Well, thank you, dude. I think you are too, man. I'm really intrigued by you guys' lifestyle. I think I learned a decent amount about it today.

• 1:32:47Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:32:48Theo Von?

You know, there probably could have been some other avenues about it that I could have asked about.

• 1:32:51Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:32:52Theo Von?

Um, but I appreciate you coming, bro. I really do.

• 1:32:55Speaker 02

  I appreciate you inviting me.

• 1:32:56Theo Von?

And I admire you guys having a unique culture. I, I think there's a lot of people in the world that are trying to get back to the roots of their culture and things that matter and mean something. So I almost feel like you guys are already there in some ways.

• 1:33:08Speaker 02

Yeah, in some ways, yeah. And like, it, it, uh, like some people, uh, it feels like it's like not grounded anymore to family and stuff, you know, like they're just, uh, doing like really crazy stuff, but like if you're, like if you touch grass every day, you know, like, like you're outside every day and, like I'm outside all the time, that's why I'm like so dark, almost look Mexican, but I'm not.

• 1:33:33Theo Von?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:33:34Speaker 02

  But yeah, like and.

• 1:33:37Speaker 02

  It's really crazy.

• 1:33:39Theo Von?

  Well.

• 1:33:40Speaker 02

I appreciate it a lot for you inviting me. This is a really crazy experience. Coming out here to town and then me sleeping 10 stories up, up 10 stories.

• 1:33:50Theo Von?

  I know.

• 1:33:50Speaker 02

That's like the first time I've ever slept that high.

• 1:33:52Theo Von?

Oh, you're in a hotel that's really high?

• 1:33:52Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:33:54Theo Von?

  You've never done that?

• 1:33:54Speaker 02

  No, I haven't.

• 1:33:55Theo Von?

  Wow.

• 1:33:56Speaker 02

And it's like my first time ever like staying in a big city like this. So it's, it's, it's like, I'll never forget it.

• 1:34:03Theo Von?

  That's awesome.

• 1:34:04Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:34:04Theo Von?

Well, good, man. Uh, Timothy, I appreciate it, man. Thank you so much, dude, for your time. Thanks for coming out to my show and, uh, and yeah, just thanks for being here with us and helping us learn, brother.

• 1:34:12Speaker 02

  I appreciate it, dude.

• 1:34:13Theo Von?

All right, man. And thanks for my hat, too, dude.

• 1:34:15Speaker 02

Dude, I, that's the least I could do.

• 1:34:17Theo Von?

It was nice. And when I get close to it, I'm coming by for some coffee soup, all right?

• 1:34:20Speaker 02

  Yes, sir.

• 1:34:20Theo Von?

  With me?

• 1:34:21Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:34:22Theo Von?

  You got it.

• 1:34:22Speaker 02

  All right.
