Support for the show comes from Jira by Atlassian. AI is only as useful as the context it has to work from, but when that context is scattered across tools, threads, and DMs, that means your team and your AI agents end up flying blind. That's the problem that Jira solves. What's the goal tied to your project? What got decided last week in Slack? Atlassian's teamwork graph pulls all these pieces together, from Jira, Confluence, Slack, GitHub, and more, so nothing falls through the cracks. With Jira, you can actually share that context with the AI agents you already use, like Claude, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot, assign them work directly, or connect your agents through MCP. Spend less time digging through endless links and DMs, less time chasing down what got decided and by who, and more time actually shipping. Learn more at jira.com.

  That's J-I-R-A dot com.

You can now adjust the intensity which HGR content displays.

• 1:25Andrew Manganelli?

  Woo!

• 1:26David Imel?

There's a slider now. So it'll show you like, the brightness that the HGR content comes through.

• 1:31Speaker 01

I'm dragging it all the way up.

• 1:33David Imel?

  Marquez.

• 1:33Speaker 01

I'm dragging it all the way up.

• 1:34Andrew Manganelli?

  That's what it was.

• 1:35Speaker 01

I want it, I want to be scrolling with low brightness. And I want to see your picture on Instagram and just boom.

• 1:42Andrew Manganelli?

Marquez wants that flashbang in his bed.

• 1:45Speaker 01

  I want that impactful media.

• 1:47David Imel?

I just want to turn it all off.

• 1:49Speaker 01

Turn it all the way up.

• 1:49David Imel?

  I hate HGR.

• 1:54Speaker 01

Yeah, what is up people of the internet? Welcome back to another episode of the Waveform Podcast. We're your hosts, I'm Marquez.

• 2:00Speaker 03

  I'm Andrew.

• 2:01Speaker 01

  And it's your birthday. Nice.

• 2:03Andrew Manganelli?

  Happy birthday.

• 2:04Speaker 01

Happy birthday, Marquez. Today is, as of the day of recording, my birthday. My 32nd birthday.

• 2:12Andrew Manganelli?

And what's your listening age, by the way?

• 2:13Speaker 01

Yeah. We'll get to that later. My Spotify Wrapped seems to agree.

• 2:18Speaker 01

Yeah, so in this episode, we have like kind of a lot, actually, to go through. A bunch of stuff, for some reason, all happened this week, in the first half of the week. Very convenient for us to talk about it on the pod. Galaxy Z Trifold, for real, for real, this time. Tons of Android features. YouTube also finally did the thing. You know what I'm talking about.

• 2:36Speaker 03

  YouTube Rewind.

• 2:36Speaker 01

Yeah, actually, yeah. I miss it. I miss it. And also, we're gonna wrap it up with our Waveform Creators Wrap to see how many of you continue to listen to us. So that's what we're gonna do. K-pop.

• 2:48Speaker 01

I also had K-pop on my Spotify Wrapped. So the case is that. Alright. K-pop Demon Hunters.

• 2:54Andrew Manganelli?

Well, it is your birthday, and we thought we'd open this episode with...

• 2:58Speaker 01

  A gift.

• 2:59Andrew Manganelli?

Adam, could you grab this? That, um, we got you a little present.

• 3:02Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 3:02Andrew Manganelli?

Oh. We know it's hard to get something for the man who has everything, but last week, you told us there is something you didn't really understand. So, we thought it would be a perfect time to get you that thing and see if you can live the magic of...

• 3:18Speaker 03

Live the magic, and then we'd also be curious, as the greatest tech reviewer on earth, the greatest product reviewer on earth, because if you could give a brief review, like, you know, instant stream of...

• 3:27Andrew Manganelli?

  Unboxing.

• 3:28Speaker 01

This must be a lububu. There's...

• 3:30Andrew Manganelli?

Can you please explain for the audio listeners?

• 3:33Speaker 03

Well, I just think you'd have the ability to make it crystal clear what a lububu is for everyone else.

• 3:38Andrew Manganelli?

Wow, way to ruin the surprise.

• 3:40Speaker 01

Do a hands-on review. Alright, I'll unbox this. Oh, oh. I'll unwrap this. And it is in fact, I'm pretty sure this is a LaBubu. Does it say LaBubu anywhere? Is that a nickname? It doesn't say LaBubu on it.

• 3:53Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, it doesn't? I've also never witnessed this happen.

• 3:57Speaker 01

It says, it's, well, it says, uh...

• 3:59Andrew Manganelli?

Did you get a knockoff, Ellis?

• 4:01Speaker 03

No, I did not get a, I did not get a LaFufu.

• 4:04Speaker 01

Well, is, what is LaBubu anyway?

• 4:05Andrew Manganelli?

  They're blind boxes.

• 4:06Speaker 01

Is that like what people call it as a?

• 4:08Andrew Manganelli?

  No, it's the real name.

• 4:08Speaker 03

That is in fact a LaBubu.

• 4:10Speaker 01

It doesn't say it anywhere. I think people already know what it is. It says, "Exciting Macron, the Monsters, Vinyl Face, Popmart." It doesn't say LaBubu anywhere, but here's a box. It's a pla, it's a colorful box. It's got pastel colors. Um, I'm going to... So it's a blind box, so you can get any of those ones on the side?

• 4:31Andrew Manganelli?

And there is like an extremely rare one, right? We all know he's going to pull it.

• 4:35Speaker 03

In this series, the extremely rare one is a one out of 12 chance.

• 4:39Speaker 01

  Secret.

• 4:39Speaker 03

Uh, that's not the rare. The rest of them are one out of six.

• 4:41Speaker 01

Got it. So there's six, six of them on the side and then one secret one that's a one out of 12. So it's exactly twice as rare or half as common. Ah, 12 is not that. I will open it.

• 4:52Andrew Manganelli?

No, that's not RuneScape drop rate. That's fantastic.

• 4:55Speaker 01

  It's in a bag now.

• 4:56Andrew Manganelli?

  Ooh.

• 4:57Speaker 01

It also does not say LaBubu. It says, "Exciting Macron." I'm actually starting to wonder why people call these LaBubu.

• 5:03Andrew Manganelli?

I thought they had like a tear thing on the inside. This has like a sticker on the top that feels like it got tampered with already.

• 5:10Speaker 03

I went to the Popmart store in World Trade and purchased this.

• 5:16Speaker 01

  Smells kinda...

• 5:19Speaker 01

Artificial. Smells tough. It smells kinda like a carpet. Um, okay. It's a secret one? So this is... It's beige. I'm gonna go based on colors.

• 5:28Speaker 03

I believe there's a card in the bag that, that tells you what, in the, in the, the blind bag.

• 5:33Speaker 01

  Oh my god, it's ugly.

• 5:34Andrew Manganelli?

  It's pretty cute.

• 5:35Speaker 01

  Okay, this card.

• 5:36Andrew Manganelli?

This is very like Patagonia jacket colored.

• 5:38Speaker 01

  Yeah. Beige.

• 5:42Speaker 01

  I got Toffee, it says.

• 5:45David Imel?

  Oh, okay.

• 5:45Speaker 01

So one of the middle, normal rarity ones. Toffee is, I guess that's the color too. Uh, so it's a little furry character with, um, it's, it has like regular hands and feet and the face, but then the rest is completely covered by fur. Uh, it's got a keychain on the top, so you could pitch your keys on this. Oh shit.

• 6:09Speaker 04

Are you gonna do that for the rest of the day? We would be very hurt if you wouldn't, if you don't put your keys on this.

• 6:13Speaker 01

I actually don't carry any keys with me. So I, I will not have any keys to put on this, but it is a nice little keychain, I will say. And it says the monsters on it. So at no point anywhere does anything say LeBubu.

• 6:26Andrew Manganelli?

I'm also good. The exciting macaron thing is that that's this one's like, uh, I believe that is the series, right?

• 6:33Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 6:33David Imel?

Oh, yeah, but there are no macarons.

• 6:37Speaker 03

Well, I believe all of the colors are references.

• 6:40David Imel?

  Oh, to macaron color?

• 6:42Speaker 03

Uh, or flavors perhaps? I don't know.

• 6:43David Imel?

I think it's just macaron colors.

• 6:45Speaker 01

  Toffee.

• 6:47David Imel?

  Oh, yeah.

• 6:47Speaker 01

  Yeah, Toffee.

• 6:48Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, yeah. I think audio listeners love that section.

• 6:50Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 6:51Speaker 01

I cannot say I understand any of the hype, but it is a pretty unique looking, uh, character.

• 6:57Speaker 03

  How's the build quality?

• 6:59Speaker 01

Yeah, it feels, so it's kind of like a bobblehead. It feels like I could rip the head off. I don't want to. I'm not going to, but it kind of, doesn't it feel, doesn't it look like I could?

• 7:07David Imel?

  It does.

• 7:08Speaker 01

  How small the neck is.

• 7:09David Imel?

  It's pretty malleable.

• 7:10Speaker 01

  I'm just saying.

• 7:11Andrew Manganelli?

I think that's, that's good build quality that they're confident enough in a tight neck.

• 7:16David Imel?

  Can I feel it?

• 7:17Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 7:17David Imel?

  Here, you can try it.

• 7:18Speaker 04

  Happy birthday!

• 7:19Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 7:20Andrew Manganelli?

Happy birthday. I know you love your presents so much and will never get rid of it.

• 7:23Speaker 01

  Thank you.

• 7:23Andrew Manganelli?

We'll carry it everywhere you go.

• 7:24David Imel?

  Yeah, you guys know me.

• 7:25Speaker 01

You know what's funny? On the tag, they have a little area to cut it.

• 7:28David Imel?

  Nice.

• 7:29Andrew Manganelli?

  That's smart.

• 7:29David Imel?

You should cut it off, because it takes up like a lot of the space.

• 7:32Andrew Manganelli?

You'll lose resale value, isn't it?

• 7:34Speaker 01

  Honestly, decent build quality.

• 7:37Speaker 01

Is resale value something I should be thinking about? Very soft. Not anymore. No, right. Already opened it. This is just a normal mass-produced product that everyone can buy.

• 7:44Speaker 03

Here, let me, I can find the resale value.

• 7:46Speaker 01

Okay. There's just no way it's high. That's soft. How much actually is a, is, is a Labubu? Or whatever. It depends on how rare it is.

• 7:54Speaker 03

  About thirty dollars on this.

• 7:56Speaker 01

  Whoa. You spent.

• 7:58Speaker 03

  This was. This was.

• 8:00Speaker 01

  To be fair.

• 8:00Speaker 03

  A corporate card purchase.

• 8:02Andrew Manganelli?

What? It was for the podcast, we forgot it was your birthday. Which maybe makes this worse, but we wanted to do it just for the pod and then it happened to land on your birthday.

• 8:11Speaker 01

Research, research. There was a mint green, human-sized Labubu that sold for a hundred seventy thousand dollars. Mint green, but that's like a one of one, human-sized one. Yeah. I feel like these are just regular stuffed animals.

• 8:26Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 8:27Speaker 01

  Yeah. Yeah, but they're creepy.

• 8:28Andrew Manganelli?

  Collectible, yeah.

• 8:29Speaker 01

With like a unique face that is. Like, remember the trolls?

• 8:31Andrew Manganelli?

  And gambling.

• 8:32Speaker 01

Do you remember the trolls? Yeah. With the long weird hair? Yep, yep. It's not different. Yeah. Everything is the same. I agree. I'm gonna. Nice.

• 8:40Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh.

• 8:40Speaker 01

We live in a circulated society. Oh, perforated, nice. Yeah. Well.

• 8:45Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 8:45Speaker 03

Marcus, it does seem that Toffee sells on eBay for slightly more than it was paid for in the blind box.

• 8:53Speaker 01

So how easy was it for you to walk in and buy this in the blind box?

• 8:56Speaker 03

Uh, that easy. I, I walked into the Popmart store and grabbed one of the blind boxes and took it to the register and, uh.

• 9:04Speaker 01

  Swiped my corporate card.

• 9:05Andrew Manganelli?

Are we past the major hype of these of like?

• 9:08Speaker 03

The hardest, the hardest part of the whole thing was that the corporate card does not have a tap chip. Um, and I had to actually physically insert it. Um, I do believe we, I don't know if we're necessarily past the hype as much as every single thing is a recession indicator.

• 9:23Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:24Speaker 03

But, uh, there, there were more than four blind boxes available for purchase in the NYC Oculus Popmart store.

• 9:33Speaker 01

Yeah. Yeah, nice perforated box, nice perforated tag, good build quality.

• 9:39Speaker 01

I have no idea how much you spent, but without looking at the receipts on the corporate card, I'm gonna, that's what I was gonna guess, thirty dollars.

• 9:45Speaker 03

Yeah, it was, it was, I think, before tax, it was like twenty-eight, and after tax, it was like thirty-one. Would you describe that as an experience worth thirty-one dollars?

• 9:54Speaker 01

I can tell that this is not about the physical product at all, because it's not impressive at all. It's definitely more about this social plugin and like relating to other people who got one and like the Pokemon card opening type of experience. It's like not really about the thing, it's more about the the stuff around the thing, the aura, the aura.

• 10:15David Imel?

The aura. Yeah. Are you farming right now?

• 10:18Speaker 01

  This thing is, for sure.

• 10:19David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 10:19Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 10:19Andrew Manganelli?

We've blessed this episode with Labubu aura.

• 10:22Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 10:23Speaker 03

To everyone that begged me to buy Marquez's Labubu after last week's episode, you know who you are.

• 10:30Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 10:30Andrew Manganelli?

  You're welcome.

• 10:31Speaker 03

  You made this happen.

• 10:32David Imel?

  Well, happy birthday.

• 10:35Speaker 01

  Thank you.

• 10:35David Imel?

Uh, I have another birthday gift for you.

• 10:37Speaker 01

  Oh. That is a segue.

• 10:40David Imel?

  It's more dystopian bull.

• 10:42Speaker 01

  Nice.

• 10:43David Imel?

  Okay, so this is actually-

• 10:44Andrew Manganelli?

  That's what you asked for.

• 10:45David Imel?

This is actually a birthday gift for Ellis. Um, okay, Ellis. Yes. I know how much you let, you love AI overview. I know that, and when I said that that Labubu sold for a hundred seventy thousand dollars at auction, it was an AI overview answer. It might be a lie, I'm not sure. But because I know how much you love AI overview, I've got a really fun new headline for you, which is, in the Google Discover feed on some phones, well, you know, the thing where you swipe over to the left.

• 11:14Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 11:14David Imel?

Um, notably, my friend actually liked the articles that were being served to her because they were about chimpanzees.

• 11:22David Imel?

They are now experimenting with using AI to replace the headlines with like four-word headlines. And it's going about as well as you would expect.

• 11:33Speaker 01

This sounds like when Apple tried to summarize its notifications and it just went horribly wrong.

• 11:37David Imel?

Yes, yes. So, so here are some of the summarized headlines.

• 11:41Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 11:41David Imel?

PC Gamer, Baldur's Gate 3 players exploit children.

• 11:45Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 11:46Speaker 03

  Hmm.

• 11:47David Imel?

Not what the article is about.

• 11:48Speaker 03

Do you know what the article was about?

• 11:50David Imel?

  No.

• 11:52Andrew Manganelli?

And like, if I type that in-

• 11:53David Imel?

  About that.

• 11:55Speaker 03

I think I found the article.

• 11:56David Imel?

  I think I did.

• 11:57Speaker 03

It's about how Baldur's Gate three players had discovered that since kids are not killable in the game, they could control an army of them to make the game very easy, but they're virtual children.

• 12:08David Imel?

  Maybe not that far off.

• 12:11Speaker 03

  Extremely far off.

• 12:12David Imel?

Virtual children, that's true. Very different from real children. All right, here's another one. Chi2 slows older pixels.

• 12:19Speaker 04

I have no idea what that could be about.

• 12:21David Imel?

That can't use Chi2 on older pixels.

• 12:23Speaker 03

  That Chi2 is, oh.

• 12:25David Imel?

Yeah, Chi2 is on the newest pixel, not the older pixels. From The Verge, Microsoft developers using AI.

• 12:33Speaker 01

  Nice.

• 12:35Speaker 01

To be fair, that does narrow down. Or I should click this article.

• 12:40David Imel?

Ars Technica, Steam Machine price revealed. It was not.

• 12:47David Imel?

It was, well, no, it was not actually revealed.

• 12:49Speaker 04

  I know, that's.

• 12:50David Imel?

Correct. PC Gamer, Schedule One Farming Backup.

• 12:57David Imel?

Probably a farming simulator headline of some sort.

• 13:00Andrew Manganelli?

It's this like crazy game where you're like, you like grow drugs and sell drugs in this town.

• 13:06David Imel?

  Right, right.

• 13:07Andrew Manganelli?

You can like experiment with it and feed it to the like people around the town and they get like, they'll like vomit on the streets. It's this crazy game that for like a month had a ton of hype. So there must have been, not The Sims quite, but yeah, it's like drugs, drug dealer simulator, pretty much.

• 13:29Speaker 01

I'm getting flashbacks to SimCity and actually one of my favorite games of all time that I almost guarantee none of you played, which is called Sid Meier's Sim Golf. And you could build a golf course and a business around that golf course and you had to lay it out. You bought a plot of land.

• 13:49Andrew Manganelli?

This is the most Marquez game.

• 13:51Speaker 01

Yeah, you bought a plot of land and you had to buy a plot based on how hilly it was or how flat it was and how malleable hell rocky or whatever. And then you start building and it costs a certain amount and you start off with a three hole golf course, a little pitch of putt, and then you destroy things and you add new holes and you build a nine hole course and an 18 hole course. You build a whole business out of it until you have, and then you build a golfer as well. God, and the soundtrack to this game was so good.

• 14:13David Imel?

This is the ideal Marquez video game.

• 14:15Speaker 01

Yeah, I put a lot of hours into that game.

• 14:17David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 14:18Speaker 01

  Remembering it.

• 14:18David Imel?

  Dang.

• 14:19Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 14:19David Imel?

  Incredible.

• 14:20Speaker 01

  Good times.

• 14:20David Imel?

Well, anyway, last one from PC Games and AI Tag Debate heats.

• 14:28David Imel?

Because they're just trying to use like as few words as possible.

• 14:33Andrew Manganelli?

I feel like the funniest thing about AI stuff is they're like, we're gonna pull all this stuff from articles that we didn't write, you know, into AI overviews and stuff and give terrible credit towards it. And now they're like, do you know what else we could do better than them, even though they're doing all of it in the first place? Rename their headlines like

• 14:50David Imel?

  Dude.

• 14:50Andrew Manganelli?

Everyone online, we are people like this. It's like a title is extremely important. I think the people writing these articles know how important the titles are and that some garbage black box LLM is gonna do it better than.

• 15:04David Imel?

Google forced this industry to be developed, like Google forced the SEO industry. There are conferences, there are expos that people go to to talk about search engine optimization. And now Google's like, we don't care that you did that. We're just gonna like randomly mess with it now.

• 15:21Speaker 01

Yeah, that is not my favorite feature.

• 15:23David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 15:25Speaker 03

I've never worked at a tech company. I don't really understand how things go on in there, but it just sort of feels like someone woke up some morning, some like VP, middle manager type person. I was just like, man, I haven't given anyone any new ideas in like a month. I gotta, I gotta think, I, I, I got it. Well, AI, the, the headlines.

• 15:45David Imel?

Yeah. I know we've already made all the videos and images slop.

• 15:49Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 15:49David Imel?

Let's make the headlines slop now. Anyway, The Verge did reach out to Google about this and their official statement was, "We are testing a new design that changes the placement of existing headlines to make topics easier to digest before, before they explore links from across the web."

• 16:04Andrew Manganelli?

I want articles to be harder to digest by just the title.

• 16:08David Imel?

  Literally.

• 16:09Andrew Manganelli?

And I want you to have to click it and go into it's.

• 16:11David Imel?

The more you still is, you're flat, the more you flatten an idea, the more it's gonna be misinformation spread across.

• 16:17Andrew Manganelli?

It's one of the best things Twitter has ever done, which was the.

• 16:21David Imel?

  Please read this before you.

• 16:22Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, before you retweet it, it's like, are you sure you want to? Cause you could still read the article. That's, well, that actually is one of my biggest gripes about AI overview just in Google is. I can read it and be like, okay, that is exactly what I'm looking for. I just want to double check it because it's an AI overview. And then you click the link and then it shows like three articles that it possibly pulled that from. I just want to be like, I just want, where did this quote come from?

• 16:47Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 16:48Andrew Manganelli?

This would actually be helpful because it is right some of the times. And when it's, I just want to make sure it's right because I will never take it at face value.

• 16:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 16:56Andrew Manganelli?

And it makes that part really hard. That's my biggest frustration.

• 16:59Speaker 01

Well, hopefully people will hate this as much as I do and they will not end up shipping this full time. Cause it's just an experiment right now.

• 17:06Andrew Manganelli?

How long until this comes to YouTube and we don't have to think about titles anymore?

• 17:09Speaker 01

That would, that's, that would hit so much harder for me because like I, it's, the packaging is part of the product. And, and that's like a generic statement about like every industry and every product, but also with articles, like the, the headline and the, the opening, like in the newspaper, this was true. And now about online articles, the packaging is a part of the product. And for us, videos, the thumbnail and the title, even though you can A B test it or whatever, it's still very true that the packaging is a part of the product. It leads you in the thumbnail. Sometimes it's the opening scene of the video, things like that. For AI to just gobble that up and summarize it, like we've seen that go poorly so many times. There's no way that that works well.

• 17:49Andrew Manganelli?

I think for people listening to us or even maybe in our shoes, sometimes it's, it feels like it hits harder for, if they took this to YouTube because it's so much easier to be personal on seeing a face. But like, we probably know some of the people that wrote these articles. This is like nine to five Google. This is Verge. You just put an article on the verge. Like this could have been yours up there that you took time to doing. We know people at nine to five Google, not Android, everywhere. And like, these are actual people that think the same way we do. It's just a written form and you don't see their face.

• 18:18Speaker 03

You guys are stuck in the past, man. You're stuck in the past. Don't you realize that all Google's doing, they're lowering the barrier to entry, bro? It's like, what if you really want to be a journalist, but like you're really bad at writing and you don't want to learn how to write? Now you can just have the AI do it for you, dude.

• 18:33Andrew Manganelli?

What if you want to review a phone, but you just don't have the phone? Like AI can just see how the phone's doing online and.

• 18:39Speaker 03

Get with the times, guys. Like you should be able to do anything without trying and give Google money in the process.

• 18:47Speaker 01

There was, there was a part of my brain that was like trying to reason with like, the old skill that we had growing up was we wanted to find information on the internet. So we had to learn how to Google something.

• 19:01David Imel?

  Yeah, SEO language.

• 19:02Speaker 01

An SEO language and not only that, then like how to navigate the top couple of links to figure out like which sources you trust and like how to gather the information to find the answer.

• 19:12David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 19:12Speaker 01

And over time, that became like the established thing that we all had to learn. And now there's kids growing up where they're going to Google something and they have to have a totally different mindset about how to find the right answer to their question. Which is going to involve like a lot of times looking at an AI overview and then like clicking all of the links that it references.

• 19:29David Imel?

But the kids aren't gonna click all those links.

• 19:31Speaker 01

I don't know, like I, I want them to also have some sort of process that they can trust to find reliable answers to questions on the internet. And it's definitely going to be different today versus how we grew up 10 years ago. But I, yeah, there, it just doesn't seem like it's better.

• 19:46David Imel?

What Google wants is they want to make an answer engine, not a search engine.

• 19:50Speaker 01

  Right.

• 19:50David Imel?

They want you to be able to just type a natural language question into a box and it just tells you and you don't have to go to a website. It just wants to be like the answer to everything in one little.

• 19:59Speaker 04

Which is fine, but then let me go one level deeper.

• 20:02David Imel?

  But it's not fine.

• 20:03Speaker 04

  No.

• 20:03David Imel?

  Nobody's gonna make the information.

• 20:05Speaker 04

If I Google like, okay, Samsung trifold, I don't mind them taking the top 10 articles, summarizing it and being like, this is a thing that happened. But I should be able to click that and see all the actual articles. Like, give me the answer, sure, but then when I click it, just pop up the things you're pulling from.

• 20:19David Imel?

The lowest common denominator is people generally are not going to go to those articles. You are because you grew up in an era of skepticism.

• 20:25Speaker 01

It's kind of like commoditizing surface level knowledge. So it lets you like speed run the beginning of learning about something into the middle. Like at the beginning of like, let's say we know nothing about, what do we, we know nothing about lemurs, whatever, like labubus, right?

• 20:40David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 20:41Speaker 01

The first, the first four or five Googles of me trying to figure out what labubus are in 2003. Where like, what does the word mean? Where do they come from? And like figuring out all the stuff and like going to Wikipedia and reading a bunch of stuff. Now, the first four to five Googles is just giving me an AI answer where I just go, what is a labubu? And it has an AI overview and then I Google, uh, why are they so popular? And it gives me an AI overview and then I just read the first three or four and now I've just speed run all of the like, probably very useful understanding to just getting the high level stuff. And to Google, that's a success for them because they keep you Googling and that's great.

• 21:19David Imel?

Well, that's true. Yeah, that's true in everything that they're making. I mean, even with anti-gravity with the coding stuff. It's like.

• 21:25Speaker 01

Yeah, you speedrun learning how to code.

• 21:27David Imel?

Yeah, you're understanding the very, very high level things of like, oh, I need a Google Maps API key. It told me that, but it did it for me. So I don't know how to implement it.

• 21:38Speaker 01

You don't know what that means or how it did it or why it did it or what it means to do that again.

• 21:42David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 21:43Speaker 01

Or improve upon it. You just know that you did it.

• 21:45David Imel?

  Right.

• 21:46Speaker 01

  Tough.

• 21:46David Imel?

  Not, not great.

• 21:47Speaker 01

  Not, not better.

• 21:48David Imel?

  Not fantastic.

• 21:49Speaker 01

  Definitely not better. Um, well.

• 21:51Andrew Manganelli?

Man, you sound old on your birthday.

• 21:53Speaker 01

  I know. Oh, these kids.

• 21:55Andrew Manganelli?

  I just think.

• 21:56David Imel?

New title, Old Man Yells at Cloud.

• 21:57Speaker 01

I feel like Old Man Yelling at Cloud, but I do think there is some.

• 22:01Andrew Manganelli?

  Yelling at the cloud.

• 22:01Speaker 01

  Yeah, the cloud, literally.

• 22:02Speaker 03

I just want to throw out there, you know, without getting too.

• 22:07Andrew Manganelli?

  Too late.

• 22:08Speaker 03

  Yeah, without getting too late.

• 22:09Speaker 01

  We're all in.

• 22:10Speaker 03

It's just like, you know, there's all this talk in the United States about how, about, about China's censored internet. You know what I mean? And how crazy it is that you can't Google certain things or certain information is just unavailable to you in certain countries, you know? And, uh, you know, when we live in the world where there's just an answer machine and there's no transparency as to where it gets its answers from. That's the same thing. That's, that's, that's exactly the same thing. All of a sudden you could be like, what's Google Plus? And Google could be like, there's no such thing as Google Plus. We, we've never done anything that stupid, you know? And then there'd be no way to fact check that. And, uh, that's.

• 22:46Speaker 01

We do ask it for sources, like when they sort of start to put this, they sprinkle the links in now for where.

• 22:53Andrew Manganelli?

We're just being clear that right now there are sources and all of this. And it also is the top of a Google search where you can scroll past it and all of the normal links.

• 23:01Speaker 03

Yeah. Also, eventually all of these, these companies do want what David's describing, like, like a text bot. That does not take you to any other places.

• 23:10Andrew Manganelli?

I'm just making sure we all, right now that is not the situation we're in and.

• 23:14Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 23:15Speaker 01

  It's where we're going though.

• 23:16Speaker 03

  It's where we're headed.

• 23:16Speaker 01

It's the direction we're pointing. It doesn't really have to go all the way.

• 23:19Andrew Manganelli?

  Definitely the direction.

• 23:20Speaker 01

But it's the direction we're pointing.

• 23:21Speaker 03

No, but that's like, we've already seen it with Grokapedia. You know, that's literally the entire point of Grokapedia.

• 23:26Andrew Manganelli?

I don't take Grok seriously in the least.

• 23:30David Imel?

Side note, I found it. You have to click the little icons and it shows you all the articles.

• 23:35Andrew Manganelli?

  The little.

• 23:36Speaker 01

A tiny, a tiny little button that you have to remember to find.

• 23:39Andrew Manganelli?

No, that button's the thing I don't like about on browser is it's like. I wish it just brought me to the exact article, but it's usually when you click it. I'm clicking it at the end of a sentence, which probably should be just a sentence from an article. And then it shows me like three articles. So now I have to go back and find it in there like it. I it should direct me to the sentence in the article, I feel like, and that would actually make it useful. Because then in one minute, it can be true or false and I can confirm and it did.

• 24:06David Imel?

  Gemini does do that, actually.

• 24:08Speaker 03

And so does so does AI overviews.

• 24:10David Imel?

  If you click on.

• 24:10Andrew Manganelli?

No, AI, I'm talking about AI over like it has the link and then it shows me three articles by the sentence. And then I have to go find it like it should just show me the article that it brought me to.

• 24:19David Imel?

In Gemini, when it shows you sources on the side, if you click one of the sources, it automatically brings you to the part. And it highlights it too, where it took the information from.

• 24:28Speaker 03

I wonder if we are getting different stages of AI over because my AI overviews do that too. Like when I click on the little chain, it'll take me to the exact sentence in the article.

• 24:36David Imel?

Yeah, mine just did that as well.

• 24:39Speaker 03

It's still wrong all most of the time, but.

• 24:41David Imel?

Yeah, I just Googled Sid Meier's golf release date. And the AI overview is correct. And then I click on it and it says it's pulling from Wikipedia and a fandom.

• 24:51Speaker 03

  And it is correct.

• 24:52David Imel?

And it's correct. Nice. Yeah, that's good. Wikipedia is correct. So that was easy for them. That's true.

• 24:57Speaker 03

Well, I looked up the milliamp hour battery life of a phone that I'm going to ask you about at trivia later. And it linked to the Wikipedia thing and it just made up a number. It links.

• 25:06David Imel?

  Is the Wikipedia right?

• 25:08Speaker 03

No, no, the Wikipedia number was right, but the number it gave me in AI overview, despite linking and highlighting the number Wikipedia was a different number.

• 25:16David Imel?

Nice. All right. Well, I have something positive to talk about.

• 25:25David Imel?

Have you ever wanted to consume YouTube Shorts, TikTok and Instagram Reels at the exact same time?

• 25:34Speaker 01

With three different scrolls happening at three different rates?

• 25:36David Imel?

Do I have a phone for you?

• 25:38Andrew Manganelli?

You ever wanted to watch Quibi, Tubi and Phoebe at the same time?

• 25:43David Imel?

  Bring back Quibi.

• 25:44Speaker 01

  Samsung.

• 25:44David Imel?

  Too early.

• 25:45Speaker 01

  Galaxy Z Trifold.

• 25:47David Imel?

Z Trifold, baby. We finally got an announcement. We were waiting for this. They were saying by December. They technically did it December 1st.

• 25:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 25:56David Imel?

  I think.

• 25:56Speaker 01

So to be clear, we got some information.

• 25:58David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 25:58Speaker 01

We didn't get a price yet.

• 25:59David Imel?

  No.

• 26:00Speaker 01

But we got, uh, we got to see the device.

• 26:03David Imel?

  Oh, we did.

• 26:03Speaker 01

  Korean price.

• 26:04David Imel?

  Okay.

• 26:04Speaker 01

And we got to see the device in action. There's a couple YouTube videos out about it now and some specs. And we can see how it folds. So there's the single display and then there's the unfolding, the inside for the triple display.

• 26:15Andrew Manganelli?

Explain how folds to audio listeners.

• 26:17Speaker 01

Okay, so, um, picture a, picture one of those pamphlets, one of those tri-fold pamphlets, right? Where you have like a left, a right and a middle and just go ahead and fold the left and the right over each other. So you have a single column. That single column is a six and a half inch screen, single screen setup. And then you open both at the same time and you have a 10 inch tablet on the inside.

• 26:41David Imel?

  Kind of.

• 26:41Speaker 01

So there is no like two-screen version because there's only a single or a tri. But it's like one of those pamphlets, you know?

• 26:48Andrew Manganelli?

Like a menu. Like a big menu.

• 26:50Speaker 01

  Like a, yeah.

• 26:51David Imel?

  A map.

• 26:51Speaker 01

Yeah, like a map. Or I'm thinking of like the souvenir shop and like they have like a.

• 26:56David Imel?

  At the zoo.

• 26:57Andrew Manganelli?

  Like a brochure.

• 26:58Speaker 01

  A brochure. Thank you. Yeah.

• 26:59David Imel?

  A brochure.

• 27:00Speaker 01

  That's what I'm picturing.

• 27:01David Imel?

They should, they should have just called it the Samsung brochure.

• 27:03Speaker 01

Samsung Galaxy Z brochure. Yeah, so tri-fold.

• 27:05David Imel?

  Z brochure.

• 27:06Speaker 01

So this phone will have a Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy, which is the last gen. It's not the 8 Elite Gen 5. But Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy. It will be, like I said, six and a half inches on the front, 1080p, 120 Hz AMOLED. It will be 10 inches, 16 by 11, 120 Hz, 2160 by 1584.

• 27:23David Imel?

  Which feels low resolution.

• 27:25Speaker 01

A little low, a little low, but I think that will work hand in hand with its 5,600 milliamp hour total battery, which is not huge. It's a 10" screen, so I think having less pixels will be better for battery life.

• 27:38David Imel?

  We're spoiled.

• 27:39Speaker 01

Uh, triple cameras, you have a 200-megapixel main camera, seems like a flagship camera. Haven't tested it myself yet, but that's a good sign. Also a 12-megapixel ultra-wide and a 10-megapixel 3X telephoto. Which, to which a lot of people replied to my tweet, "How will a 10-megapixel 3X telephoto be better than punching in on the 200-megapixel uh, primary camera?"

• 28:00David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 28:00Speaker 01

To which I replied, "Eh, I don't know." Optics, the optics and the lens of the 3X telephoto could make it feel better than the crop on the primary.

• 28:10David Imel?

The photo sites are much larger on a 10-megapixel.

• 28:12Speaker 01

It, yeah, so maybe in lower light, it will be better, so we'll see.

• 28:16David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 28:16Speaker 01

  We'll see.

• 28:18David Imel?

Ironically, because usually the telephoto is the worst at low light.

• 28:21Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 28:21David Imel?

  So.

• 28:22Speaker 01

Uh, titanium hinge, aluminum body, IP48 rating, and all the way unfolded, it's all the way down to 3.9 millimeters.

• 28:30David Imel?

Which is the thinnest Samsung phone they've ever made, even thinner than the Fold 7.

• 28:34Speaker 01

I don't know if you realize how thin 3 millimeters is, like, when we talk about the thinnest phones that we've seen so far.

• 28:40David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 28:40Speaker 01

Were in the range of 5 to 6 millimeters, and those are, that's like iPhone Air, that's a S25 Edge. Those are 5-millimeter phones. 3.9 millimeters is crazy thin. I haven't held this yet.

• 28:53David Imel?

  That's true.

• 28:53Speaker 01

But watching the video, it seems crazy, and to fit like, meaningful compute and battery and storage and all that in this phone is genuinely impressive.

• 29:02Andrew Manganelli?

Well, it's funny though, because then when it's folded, it's apparently stupid thick.

• 29:07Speaker 01

  Right.

• 29:07Andrew Manganelli?

And like, this doesn't even feel like a normal phone.

• 29:09Speaker 01

Yeah, exactly. Folding this thing up is gonna be its weak point, it's gonna feel like a chunk like a 12, 13-millimeter thick phone.

• 29:17David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 29:17Speaker 01

Which you guys probably haven't used a phone that thick in many years, but unfolded is, is kind of the point.

• 29:24David Imel?

  Big chunker.

• 29:25Speaker 01

  Unfolded, it's, yeah, it's, it's 4.2... The Fold 7 was 4.2. So it's, it's slightly thinner than the Fold 7.

• 29:34David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 29:34Speaker 01

  Yeah, which is crazy.

• 29:36Andrew Manganelli?

The first iPhone was 11.6 millimeters thick.

• 29:39Speaker 01

Yeah. This is the, the goodness.

• 29:40Andrew Manganelli?

This is the good than that.

• 29:42David Imel?

It does do 45-watt wired charging, which is kind of surprising for something that thin. I'm curious about the heat dissipation.

• 29:49Speaker 01

Yeah, what kind of heat dissipation, what kind of...

• 29:51Andrew Manganelli?

  What heat dissipation?

• 29:52David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 29:53Speaker 01

3 millimeters thick, you can't have very much.

• 29:55David Imel?

Yeah, 309 grams, it's very heavy. The Z Fold 7 was 215, so just add another third to that. As you would.

• 30:04Speaker 01

Everything kind of steps up in thirds, right? 200 something grams for the dual screen.

• 30:08David Imel?

The battery capacity did not quite step up in thirds.

• 30:11Speaker 01

  True, true, true.

• 30:12David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 30:12Speaker 01

  The price did.

• 30:14David Imel?

  It's true.

• 30:14Speaker 01

  So what was the price?

• 30:15David Imel?

So, okay, people are expecting this to cost $2,800. That's about the conversion rate from, from the Korean price.

• 30:25Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 30:25David Imel?

  Which is a $3,000 phone.

• 30:29Speaker 01

But think about it, you have a 10-inch tablet in your pocket now.

• 30:32David Imel?

  That's true. Yeah.

• 30:33Speaker 01

I could get an iPad and an iPhone. But then you'd have to carry an iPad that you can't fold up and an iPhone. What if you could fit that in your pocket? You could get an iPad and a MacBook.

• 30:45David Imel?

Well, what they need next is they need, they need to make some sort of like omega-thin keyboard and mouse. Because the whole, the whole point for me for this is that I can just have a little laptop in my pocket at all times.

• 30:58Speaker 01

  Interesting.

• 30:58David Imel?

  Like a 10-inch laptop.

• 31:00Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 31:00David Imel?

Um, you can use, obviously, a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard with it, and it has Dex. I would like to see your Dex, Adam.

• 31:08Speaker 01

Yeah, now Adam's in. Okay, I'm all in.

• 31:10David Imel?

  And, uh...

• 31:10Speaker 01

Wait, can I, I have this huge screen, so I can plug it into a bigger screen.

• 31:15Speaker 04

Can I, like, fold it so that two of the screens are a screen and the third screen is, no?

• 31:19David Imel?

The Huawei can do that, but I can't do that. I know, yeah. Uh, but it does have a really interesting form of Dex. So there's the traditional Dex where you plug it into a monitor and then you can use it as a second display. And it's like, it's a 10-inch second display, so it's pretty big. But it also has a on-device Dex mode. Where you enable Dex mode and it becomes basically like the tablet where everything, all apps become windowed. So you can just, like, throw apps around instead of, you know, taking up the full screen, they're all windowed. So it's sort of like what happens when you attach a pixel to a display and it becomes like the, the Android-on-computer type thing. But it's just on your phone, as a little tablet. Other cool thing, you can make app groups with it now, so you can make it so two to three windows always open up

• 32:04David Imel?

at the same time in certain, um, orientations. So if you're always, like, working on Google Docs on one and then you've got YouTube on another and you've got another thing on another, you can pin that to your taskbar and when you click it...

• 32:16Speaker 01

Opens all of them at once?

• 32:17David Imel?

  In the same positions.

• 32:19Speaker 01

  Perfect.

• 32:19David Imel?

  Which is very cool.

• 32:21Speaker 01

Adam is ring ah on the inside.

• 32:23Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah, I don't want to.

• 32:24Speaker 01

Um, yeah, there was. So there was a Mr. Who's the boss video that went out about this that was like probably the first video that went out. I think maybe him and Superstop put the same video at the same time. Aaron said that it the inner glass is so soft that he leaned it against a vase, which I don't know what kind of vase he was looking at, but it's it produced very deep gouges in the screen by leaning it against a vase.

• 32:49Andrew Manganelli?

I mean, it's not like soft screen where like, I mean, we've seen fingernails and that kind of stuff produce like dense. So I guess weight of phone plus leaning on a thing for a shot, I'm guessing is.

• 33:00Speaker 01

  But like deep gouges?

• 33:01Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, that's. I mean, like, yeah.

• 33:03Speaker 01

Red flag. It's kind of spooky. It kind of it gives me Galaxy Fold 1 vibes. I was thinking the same thing. Like, this is a super, super limited thing. This is two YouTubers who got to hand like play with it hands on in Korea and that was it. And it'll slowly start to show up later, I'm sure. But this is the type of thing where it's so expensive and it's so limited that they probably aren't going to have the masses really approaching this thing and they can kind of handle the crazy crisis stories better than maybe the first fold, which was everyone getting excited and then a bunch of YouTubers trying it and then a bunch of people breaking it.

• 33:36Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. Do we think it's any different from the fold screen? Like, why would the material have to be different?

• 33:42Speaker 01

It is different. I think because of the both folds and folds in, I guess, the same direction.

• 33:48Andrew Manganelli?

I mean, it's like still only 100 degrees fold. Yeah, but it doesn't matter.

• 33:53Speaker 01

I think it does. I think the key to like when, so we saw this with a razor, right? So they had this like little piece of the chin where when you unfold it, it would slide a little bit more screen out. Because when it folds, it like pulls it up and when you unfold it, it stretches it over that crease.

• 34:09Andrew Manganelli?

But that's, why would that make a difference in what the material is rather than just how much room it has to move? The razor is just it gave itself more room to do that.

• 34:17Speaker 01

Right. Well, all these films have some level of stretching over the crease to flatten it out. I'm saying when you have two creases, you have to stretch it twice as much. And so you probably need to do accomplish that in the same amount of room, you have to make it softer.

• 34:33Speaker 01

  Yeah, so it stretches.

• 34:34David Imel?

  You have more total stretch.

• 34:35Speaker 01

  Malleable. Yeah.

• 34:36Speaker 03

Not just that, but like the, when you, like when you fold the screen, you're, you're applying tension. Like because the screen is being stretched out, right? That tension has then dissipated over the entire rest of the screen. It's not like there's like a hard wall where the screen is clamped somewhere and the rest of the screen is not under tension, but right next to the crease. So when you have two creases, there's now way less room for that tension to dissipate. You're applying all of that force into a much smaller area.

• 35:03Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 35:05David Imel?

  Well.

• 35:05Speaker 03

  I went to music school.

• 35:06Andrew Manganelli?

I don't know if I believe any of you.

• 35:08Speaker 01

It's just that I'm picturing, because the first fold, the issue that they mostly dealt with was that, uh, that layer that they put on top of the soft glass was like not close enough to the edge and people would pull it off.

• 35:19Andrew Manganelli?

Well, yeah, we pulled it off.

• 35:21Speaker 01

But like that, they have to put that on top because that is harder. And when you have that fold unfold, that hard layer on top is essentially eliminating the crease. Like we've seen some get really close to having no crease now. But I just feel like this one, I mean, if you've seen the video, there's a ton of crease in these. And it's inherently not as hard because it has to stretch twice instead of once.

• 35:46David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 35:47Speaker 01

Intuitively, it makes sense in my brain. I can't really explain it very well, but I guess that's TBD on how durable this actually is.

• 35:53David Imel?

I'm picking up what you're putting down.

• 35:54Speaker 01

  Cool. Perfect.

• 35:55David Imel?

  Maybe it's because you're 32. Maybe that's why.

• 35:57Speaker 01

It's also IP48 is kind of crazy.

• 35:59David Imel?

It's not, yeah, it's not great. It can, it can withstand one millimeter or larger particles.

• 36:07Speaker 01

Yeah, the dust part, I'm not, I'm not expecting much.

• 36:10David Imel?

I'm a little worried about that.

• 36:11Speaker 01

But the eight is full submersion, no?

• 36:15David Imel?

  Like one meter or something?

• 36:16Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 36:17David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 36:17Speaker 01

  I can dunk this underwater.

• 36:18David Imel?

I mean, that's, that's more about the seals.

• 36:20Andrew Manganelli?

They know the dust will break it before it goes into water, so it doesn't have to get to that point.

• 36:24David Imel?

  Exactly.

• 36:25Andrew Manganelli?

It's funny because I'd be more worried about larger particles because.

• 36:27David Imel?

Dude, you don't want to see my pockets.

• 36:29Andrew Manganelli?

  I mean, like folds generally.

• 36:31David Imel?

  What goes on in there?

• 36:32Speaker 01

I wouldn't want to be in there.

• 36:33Andrew Manganelli?

I feel like folds generally, the issue is not that it's getting inside, but that, or inside the hinges, it's that it's getting inside when it folds. So now you fold it once and you have a particle in it and now you fold it again and smash the particle in even more.

• 36:46Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 36:46Andrew Manganelli?

So now every piece that's inside your screen gets closed twice.

• 36:50Speaker 01

  And.

• 36:51Andrew Manganelli?

And if it's, if it's on the second one. So it's either getting in between two screens and folded again, or one side folds in and then it's between a screen and a hard piece. Which means it's not getting absorbed by both sides. It's only getting absorbed by the screen side.

• 37:07David Imel?

For those that don't remember, the Galaxy Fold 1, the screens were breaking immediately and they had to like do a little recall before they actually sold the devices and then they put a screen protector on it or whatever. I don't know, man. I feel like they would have learned their lesson by now, so I'm gonna like look at this with optimism.

• 37:27Speaker 01

  I tweeted this phone out.

• 37:28David Imel?

  It feels sketchy to me.

• 37:30Speaker 01

It definitely does. I ended my tweet with like, you know what? Shout out to Samsung for being insane enough to try this. Cause they don't have to try this. Huawei has done a try-fold.

• 37:39David Imel?

  Try.

• 37:40Speaker 01

  Yeah, try.

• 37:41David Imel?

  I got it.

• 37:42Speaker 01

But yeah, they are, they're crazy enough.

• 37:46Speaker 01

  Thanks.

• 37:47Andrew Manganelli?

One thing I thought was cool was, so in order to fold it, unfold it, the, the screen that has the camera on is actually a little bit wider than the other two screens, so it creates kind of a lip. So as you're holding in your hand, you can press your thumb down on that lip to then pop the first fold open. And then when that happens through a magnet, the interior screen kind of opens up a little bit, which gives you then a lip to pull it open.

• 38:12David Imel?

Isn't the front screen that has the lip?

• 38:14Andrew Manganelli?

  No, it's the back screen.

• 38:14David Imel?

  Oh, it's the back screen?

• 38:15Andrew Manganelli?

The camera area. So you can kind of like hold it open.

• 38:18David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 38:18Andrew Manganelli?

And then that part pops up a little.

• 38:20David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 38:21Andrew Manganelli?

I thought that was a neat way of doing that because if you're just digging your fingernails into it to open it up every time is probably not great.

• 38:28David Imel?

Yeah. So it comes with a case, and the case has a little kickstand on it. Back to the kickstand phones. Thank God we back. That's nice because you're going to be able to, you know, use a mouse and keyboard with it. It also comes with a 45 watt charger, at least where it's on sale right now.

• 38:44Andrew Manganelli?

  G2?

• 38:45David Imel?

I don't think it has G2. It does have wireless charging, but it's 15 watts, so I don't think it's G2. So it's coming out in Korea earlier, but it is launching in the US in Q1 of 2026.

• 38:57Speaker 01

Pretty incredible. I'm gonna work to try to get my hands on this thing. I'm very curious about it. The Huawei Mate XT was a fascinating phone, but at no point would I like buy one or recommend one to anyone.

• 39:09David Imel?

  Services on it.

• 39:09Speaker 01

Yeah, but even just like as a hardware concept, it was like kind of insane.

• 39:13David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 39:14Speaker 01

This is Samsung. It's gonna like really launch and really go on sale. Real people are gonna be able to buy it. So I'm just curious to see how this goes. I'm gonna try and see what kind of usability it actually kind of wheels for people.

• 39:27David Imel?

It is ironic that the Huawei Mate XT actually folded like a Z. And this is called the Z tri-fold, but this folds like a U.

• 39:35Speaker 01

  Like a, yeah.

• 39:37Andrew Manganelli?

  Like a G, when it's fully folded.

• 39:40David Imel?

  Yeah, it's true, like a G.

• 39:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 39:42David Imel?

  Like a G.

• 39:43Andrew Manganelli?

  Six, seven?

• 39:45David Imel?

  Jesus. Don't do this.

• 39:48Speaker 01

  Your joke age is 12.

• 39:51Speaker 03

  Guys, we-

• 39:52David Imel?

  The life of a meme.

• 39:53Speaker 03

Every year, we inch closer and closer-

• 39:56David Imel?

  To hell.

• 39:57Speaker 03

  To crumple phone.

• 39:58Speaker 01

  Aye, not wrong.

• 40:00Andrew Manganelli?

Can I share something someone sent on Discord about the tri-fold that was funny? This guy Elliot on our Discord said, "Samsung tri-fold unboxes are out. I showed my grandma a video and she said, 'I'm getting better at spotting AI.' That one was pretty obvious."

• 40:17Andrew Manganelli?

To which I say, "Kudos grandma. I'm glad you're looking for-"

• 40:21Speaker 01

I'd rather you err on that side, honestly.

• 40:23David Imel?

I would say that the AI is probably more prominent for more people than foldable phones are.

• 40:29Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, yeah.

• 40:29David Imel?

So it would make sense that she had just never seen a foldable phone before.

• 40:33Andrew Manganelli?

I'd rather her live not knowing there's folding phones and be very wary of AI.

• 40:37Speaker 01

Although, remember that granny in the airport that I saw with the foldable phone?

• 40:42Andrew Manganelli?

Do you think this granny knows more about the Apple Vision Pro or the Steam Deck?

• 40:46Speaker 01

  I can ask.

• 40:48Speaker 04

I'll ask. He'll probably listen to this episode.

• 40:51David Imel?

  Probably neither, man.

• 40:52Speaker 01

There's probably a Vision Pro in the store she bought the phone in.

• 40:54David Imel?

Did she go in though, or did she just have her daughter buy it for her?

• 40:58Speaker 01

I think people go to stores in the US.

• 41:00David Imel?

  A granny, though?

• 41:01Speaker 03

  Yeah. Dude, grannies love dinosaurs.

• 41:04David Imel?

  Yeah. Dinosaurs?

• 41:06Speaker 01

  Stores.

• 41:06Speaker 03

The, no, the dinosaur experience that comes with, the only thing the Vision Pro does.

• 41:11David Imel?

  Oh.

• 41:12Speaker 03

Wow, most exciting product of the year, huh?

• 41:14David Imel?

That's why I said it was the Steam Deck.

• 41:16Speaker 04

And still more than the Steam Deck. I'm standing on it.

• 41:19Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, yeah. That was obvious. Anyone who disagreed with us is a moron.

• 41:22David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 41:23Andrew Manganelli?

ChatGPT was the correct answer. It was the most boring answer. We were thinking of physical gadgets.

• 41:27David Imel?

Yeah. Alright, well, we got a lot more to talk about soon. We were gonna put it in this section, but I feel like we should move it to the next section. So, uh, maybe let's throw it to trivia, and then we got a ton of Android features to talk about after that.

• 41:38Speaker 01

  Let's do it.

• 41:39David Imel?

  So, please don't leave. Retention.

• 41:42Speaker 03

  Guys.

• 41:42Speaker 01

  Thirty-six hundred.

• 41:44Speaker 03

  How did you know?

• 41:46Speaker 01

That's just a shot in the dark.

• 41:49Speaker 03

  Nah, I'm just kidding.

• 41:53Speaker 03

  Um, guys.

• 41:58David Imel?

  What's that from?

• 41:59Speaker 04

  The Office.

• 42:00Speaker 03

  No.

• 42:02Speaker 03

It's from, is it from Rent? It's either Rent or it's in the Heights. I can't remember.

• 42:06David Imel?

  No, it's Rent.

• 42:07Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 42:08David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 42:09Speaker 03

Uh, a few weeks ago, I asked if you wanted to do a question about socks or batteries, and you guys went with socks. And today, I'm gonna finally get around to asking my dope-ass battery question.

• 42:20Andrew Manganelli?

  I was hoping for socks.

• 42:21David Imel?

  What was that sock question?

• 42:22Speaker 03

It was about which sock is the cheapest or the most expensive.

• 42:25David Imel?

  Oh, yeah.

• 42:26Speaker 03

And it wasn't the iPhone sock, or was it? I don't remember. Either way, guys, the new OnePlus 15, a, uh, a, a, a fan favorite around the office. I guess that doesn't make it a fan favorite. A favorite, a regular favorite, regular old favorite.

• 42:39David Imel?

  Marquez's favorite.

• 42:40Speaker 03

Marquez's favorite. It has crazy battery life. Everyone knows this. Um, but you know what does not have crazy battery life?

• 42:51Speaker 01

Oh, this is iPhone 12 mini?

• 42:52Speaker 03

  My iPhone 12 mini.

• 42:54Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 42:54Speaker 03

How many times larger in milliamp hours is the OnePlus 15's battery than my iPhone 12?

• 43:01Speaker 01

  Are we going decimals?

• 43:02Speaker 03

  Battery?

• 43:03Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 43:03Speaker 03

Yes, and we're gonna do delta.

• 43:06Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 43:06Speaker 04

  How many times?

• 43:08Speaker 03

So you are encouraged to get as specific with decimal points as possible. Because it will likely, and I'm gonna, I'm gonna add something here. No calculators.

• 43:21Speaker 01

  Well, yeah.

• 43:22Speaker 03

We're doing long division today, boys.

• 43:24Speaker 01

  In your head.

• 43:25Speaker 03

You can do long division on the whiteboard.

• 43:26Speaker 01

I have no idea how to divide these numbers.

• 43:29Speaker 04

Make the house, make the house.

• 43:30Speaker 03

  Make the house, bro.

• 43:32Speaker 01

The house? You doing square roots over here?

• 43:33Speaker 03

You guys rich or something? With these roots?

• 43:38Speaker 04

You guys need to go back to second grade.

• 43:41Speaker 04

What, were you born in 1948?

• 43:42Speaker 01

It's been 20 years since I manually divided numbers.

• 43:45Speaker 03

You know what, honestly, honestly, real quick, let's do a mini, mini rapid fire trivia round.

• 43:50Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 43:50Speaker 03

Which of the following is the answer to a division problem? The dividend, the divisor, or the quotient?

• 43:59Speaker 01

  The quotient. I knew that.

• 44:00Speaker 04

  Yeah, I knew that.

• 44:01Speaker 01

  Dividend.

• 44:01Speaker 04

  I didn't understand.

• 44:02Speaker 01

Divisor. Dividend and divisor are. Numerator, denominator.

• 44:06Speaker 03

  Oh, he's cooking, he's cooking.

• 44:07Speaker 01

  The quotient is the answer.

• 44:08Speaker 04

Wait, okay, we had a question a couple of weeks ago, and I was like, Marquez would know what the difference is. And now you're here.

• 44:14Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 44:15Speaker 04

What is the difference between an ocean and a sea?

• 44:17Speaker 01

Didn't we talk about this on the podcast? Sea? Yeah. Was that was, while he was gone?

• 44:21Speaker 04

Yeah, he was gone that week.

• 44:22Speaker 01

  Oh. A sea? I don't know.

• 44:24Speaker 04

I was like, Marquez would know the answers.

• 44:25Speaker 01

  That there's a formal.

• 44:26Speaker 04

  Differences between rivers and lakes.

• 44:28Speaker 01

I don't know if there's a formal difference. There is. I know that a lake is an enclosed body of water, and that an ocean is not enclosed. It's closed. But a sea, is that different from an ocean? I actually don't know.

• 44:40Speaker 04

  It is.

• 44:41Speaker 01

All right, well, we'll think about that, and we'll either learn something new, or we'll figure out what the answers are. Answers will be at the end, like usual. We'll be right back.

• 47:04David Imel?

All right, welcome back. We got a bunch of new Android drops, uh, kind of out of nowhere. They are trying to make Android drops much more frequent so that there's big platformer, like, instead of big platform releases where it's like Android 16, Android 17, there's just big new feature drops that come out through Android.

• 47:20Speaker 01

  Love it.

• 47:20David Imel?

And kind of out of nowhere, I believe it's yesterday as of timer recording, maybe two days ago, we got a lot of new features. Um, so we're just going to run through a lot of them. Some of them are Android wide and some of them are pixel drops. So it's kind of those like, oh, this is on pixel only, maybe for now, maybe forever, but probably just for now.

• 47:38Speaker 01

  Kind of like airdrop?

• 47:40David Imel?

  Kind of like airdrop.

• 47:41Speaker 04

Until it gets iPhone only for only 15 years.

• 47:44Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 47:45David Imel?

So, let's just go through this. Circle to search scam detection. Upgrade to circle to search.

• 47:52Speaker 01

  Dope.

• 47:52David Imel?

Now, you can circle a scam, or what you think might be a scam, which Adam's mom apparently needs. And

• 47:59Speaker 01

  This is so useful.

• 47:59David Imel?

It'll bring up a little thing that'll, that guides you through why it may or may not be a scam. It references it against all known scams.

• 48:07Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 48:07David Imel?

And then it'll tell you, oh yeah, this is a common scam that does this, blah, blah, blah, you know?

• 48:11Speaker 01

So this is great if it works.

• 48:13Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 48:14Speaker 01

Cause imagine you circle to search an actual scam, but it's so new that it's not referenced yet.

• 48:20David Imel?

  For sure.

• 48:21Speaker 01

Tells you it's not a scam.

• 48:22David Imel?

My other concern is that the people that will make the most benefit of this is the people that are not good at knowing what a scam is on their phone and that demographic probably also doesn't know how to use circle to search.

• 48:34Speaker 01

But they probably have a nephew that can be like, hey, real quick, just circle to search by doing this one two-step. And it'll tell you.

• 48:42Speaker 04

I will say that I just did circle to search on the message that my mom sent me, the screenshot of the obvious scam. And it said, if you were not expecting this message, or do not have a paid cloud subscription, it is likely a scam. So it does do it.

• 48:54Andrew Manganelli?

It's also like, people search scams all the time. I got a letter in the mail the other day that looked super official to where like, it had three perforations where you tear it, kind of like, like, that usually means like check.

• 49:06Speaker 01

  Or it says, open immediately.

• 49:07Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah, yeah, and it was

• 49:09Speaker 01

  Time sensitive.

• 49:09Andrew Manganelli?

The funny thing was that initially got me is, uh, There was clearly a placeholder text in one part that it didn't change because I think it's was supposed to know who my lender was and it just said like lender in bold when it just didn't replace it. But anyways,

• 49:23David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 49:23Andrew Manganelli?

I searched the exact thing and just in Google's a million search results of like letter, same exact amount, same exact font. So like people search these. So it has the database to be able to find a lot of,

• 49:35David Imel?

  For sure.

• 49:35Andrew Manganelli?

You can't circle search a letter, but I'm sure plenty of that happens.

• 49:38David Imel?

  You can use Gemini live.

• 49:40Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, I think it's huge if it works. Facebook about to be real sad that all their scam things on Facebook aren't gonna sell.

• 49:47Speaker 03

  Allegedly, allegedly.

• 49:48Andrew Manganelli?

  Allegedly.

• 49:49Speaker 03

Allegedly. But yeah, no, like I, what was it? Like 10 to 30, somewhere between 10 and 30% of their business allegedly might go down too.

• 49:57Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 49:57Speaker 03

  Allegedly.

• 49:58David Imel?

Yeah, cuz that many people are gonna use circle search. I don't know about that.

• 50:02Andrew Manganelli?

They watch them make it so circle to search can't work inside of Facebook.

• 50:05David Imel?

Oh, my God. Yes, I wanna, the, these are, first of all, these are the, the Android wide features for the phones that have these capabilities. Emoji Kitchen is getting new expanded sticker combinations.

• 50:16Andrew Manganelli?

  Not useful.

• 50:18David Imel?

  Wow.

• 50:18Andrew Manganelli?

  But fun.

• 50:19David Imel?

They're different people. I love Emoji Kitchen. It is fantastic. You can make monkeys hug each other on Emoji Kitchen. That's the example they used.

• 50:27Andrew Manganelli?

Cool. But I'm saying not useful.

• 50:30David Imel?

All right. Call reason. This is interesting. You can now mark a call as urgent so that when the other person is getting the phone call, it will say it's urgent on the call. So that is useful because sometimes people call me while I'm busy and I'm like, I'm not gonna answer right now. But if it did say urgent, I would pick up and be like, what's wrong?

• 50:50Andrew Manganelli?

I can't wait to call Ellis at 3 o'clock in the morning with an urgent tag. And he goes, what? And I'll be like, you know nothing about C's.

• 50:59David Imel?

So the caller, just to be clear, the caller marks their own call as urgent.

• 51:04Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 51:04David Imel?

So that the receiver sees an urgent tag? Yeah, it'll have, it'll put a little tag on it. This is urgent. I think it has to be Android to Android.

• 51:11Speaker 03

But then you can circle to search the call screen and.

• 51:15David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 51:15Andrew Manganelli?

Can, is, is urgent the only tag?

• 51:17David Imel?

  Yes.

• 51:18Andrew Manganelli?

I would so much rather have one that says not urgent. So when I call my mom and she doesn't pick up, when she sees that later. Parents have to assume the worst about every single phone call.

• 51:30David Imel?

  Hmm.

• 51:31Andrew Manganelli?

So that can just be like.

• 51:32David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 51:32Andrew Manganelli?

Just wanted to. Lean just wanted to say hi. Like, you don't have to stop everything you're doing to call me back.

• 51:37David Imel?

Well, I saw something online that was like, I mean, if you're calling me instead of texting me, it's probably urgent. Yeah, there is that. Um, I, they did call it call reason and not like urgent call. So I'm wondering if they're planning on potentially adding more reasons later. Like, did you pick up the groceries? I don't know. At this point, just send a text, I guess. It's crazy. Yeah, yeah.

• 51:59Andrew Manganelli?

I thought this was gonna be, just because this happened to me recently, is.

• 52:02David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 52:02Andrew Manganelli?

I got a phone call from a number I didn't know, but rather than say probably spam, it just said potentially medical because it was a, a new doctor I'd went to calling me back that I didn't have their.

• 52:13David Imel?

  I've seen that before.

• 52:14Andrew Manganelli?

Whoa, wait, that's actually really useful.

• 52:16David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 52:17Andrew Manganelli?

I never pick up calls that I don't know the number to. And since it didn't populate, I was like, oh, this is probably who I think it is.

• 52:23David Imel?

  Right.

• 52:23Andrew Manganelli?

  And it was.

• 52:24David Imel?

Right. Uh, there's a new safety check feature in Google Messages. So if you've ever been added to a group chat in Google, which you can now get added to in like Google Messages, which is like, usually it's like a Bitcoin group chat, like a thousand people in it. This happens in WhatsApp all the time. Um, this is why WhatsApp is not very good. Have never happened to me, but okay. Wow.

• 52:46Andrew Manganelli?

  Telegram, though.

• 52:47David Imel?

I never get Telegram. Every other Tuesday. Do you pay the? I pay for it. Anyway, okay. Uh, so now if you get added to one of these spam group chats, it will identify that and it will immediately have a little pop up that's like, do you want to leave and report this?

• 53:02Andrew Manganelli?

  Hmm.

• 53:03David Imel?

Immediately. So it just assumes that you can sort of identify when things are kind of spam, spam group chats, which is nice. Chrome on Android is now getting pinned tabs. So if you're a big Chrome on Android person, you can now constantly have certain tabs that are always at the top of your tab groups.

• 53:20Andrew Manganelli?

That's actually nice. I like that.

• 53:21David Imel?

There are now expressive captions across videos. So when you're like watching captions on like YouTube or something, it will be like joyfully. And then it'll put the caption, which is interesting. And it, they're like colored and it's trying to like, help you understand the energy that's coming from, from the, the speaker.

• 53:40Andrew Manganelli?

Sarcasm in videos is gonna get way funnier.

• 53:43David Imel?

That would be so useful sarcastically.

• 53:46Andrew Manganelli?

Or just like it not understanding it. It's gonna be like, joyfully, but like Marquez is saying something super sarcastic about like a new feature on an iPhone and.

• 53:54David Imel?

Yeah, so that's that's coming to YouTube across all devices like immediately, which is cool. Uh, the guided frame feature, which is sort of the people with disabilities who cannot really like have trouble using their phone camera and it speaks out to them and says like where to move it so that they can center on the thing. That's getting a lot better. Um, you can now tell Gemini to make changes while you are voice typing. So you can type out a message and if you decide you wanted to change something, you say, actually change the part that says this to this and it'll do that.

• 54:27Speaker 01

Wow, I would never. That's the type of thing that I would like see my parents do and I'd be like, that doesn't work. It doesn't. And then just starts typing, starts typing what they were saying.

• 54:36David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 54:37Speaker 01

But the fact that it'll actually do that now would be kind of awesome.

• 54:40Andrew Manganelli?

Stop. Like, so you write the whole, you speak the whole message out.

• 54:45David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 54:45Andrew Manganelli?

You have to then stop and then say, change this part.

• 54:48David Imel?

Um, not completely sure. I think you can do it. I think you can do it fluidly.

• 54:53Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. So can I be like?

• 54:54David Imel?

Identify when you're saying certain things.

• 54:56Andrew Manganelli?

Hey, Marquez, I'm going to be a little late to work. Oh, wait, erase that part. I'm going to be really late to work. Like it will do that mid-sentence and not just type the whole thing out.

• 55:05Speaker 04

I thought it already did that.

• 55:07Andrew Manganelli?

  Maybe I don't, I don't use text.

• 55:09Speaker 04

On Pixel specifically, because the text speech is really good.

• 55:11David Imel?

The text speech is really good, but I haven't had, I haven't been able to go back and edit parts of what I already typed.

• 55:18Speaker 04

I think it's specific, like key phrases that will trigger it like that, like what you said, Andrew, it would actually do that.

• 55:24Andrew Manganelli?

  Actually, wait, actually erase that.

• 55:25David Imel?

  Actually.

• 55:26Andrew Manganelli?

  Like it'll go back and.

• 55:27David Imel?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 55:27Andrew Manganelli?

  That's pretty awesome.

• 55:28David Imel?

So that's pretty cool. There's now better voice dictation that lets you edit certain words or shorten messages automatically. Um, and then there are also better parental controls that make it easier to be a parent, I suppose.

• 55:39Speaker 01

  Boo.

• 55:40David Imel?

  Boo.

• 55:40Speaker 01

  Boo.

• 55:43David Imel?

  Lame. Thirty-two.

• 55:48David Imel?

  Okay, we're adults.

• 55:50Speaker 04

Which all of those are coming to all Android devices.

• 55:52David Imel?

Uh, yeah, that's like the platform wide. And then there's Android 16 QPR to pixel drop. There's too many acronyms. Okay, actually useful notification summaries. So now allegedly.

• 56:07Speaker 04

  We'll see about that.

• 56:08Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, right, I'll be the check.

• 56:09David Imel?

So this is like a more thoughtful version of Apple's notification summaries. If you either have a very long message or you have a notification from a group chat, it will summarize it, but then you can click the little dropdown menu and it'll just show you the whole thing. It'll also show you like the messages from the group chat in the little dropdown thing, or it'll show you the whole message, but overall it'll just summarize it if it's a super long message or if it's a group chat.

• 56:34Speaker 04

So it doesn't do like all notifications, it's just like per app?

• 56:38David Imel?

  It's.

• 56:38Speaker 04

  And like group messages?

• 56:39David Imel?

  Yeah, it's like in messages.

• 56:41Andrew Manganelli?

This is gonna hurt so much more when you get broken up with over a text message and it's a really long thoughtful thing and then Google's just like chain into you.

• 56:50David Imel?

Well, there's that famous like, cause you know how iMessage will do the like animations when you say certain words? There's like this famous screenshot where someone says, "Congrats, you threw away our entire relationship for a guy." And it's got the kid screaming.

• 57:05Andrew Manganelli?

On Samsung, it's like the wacky waving like inflatable arm guy.

• 57:12David Imel?

Topless. Okay, there's notification organizer, so now your notifications get separated into categories, which is so useful. So now it'll be like news, it'll be like, it'll be like offers, that kind of stuff, so you just, I love that. I think that's amazing.

• 57:28Speaker 04

  Where is this?

• 57:29David Imel?

  In your notification shade.

• 57:31Speaker 04

So they're just turning into like Gmail kind of?

• 57:33David Imel?

The old inbox app used to do that. Yeah, sort of.

• 57:36Speaker 04

  Like those like pre-made.

• 57:37David Imel?

You can kind of think about it in a similar way. Your notifications are like. Is this your inbox or your whole phone? Yeah. Basically? Yeah. Which is different types of stuff. Um, and it'll silence lower priority ones so that you don't have to deal with like random little offers and stuff like that, which is nice. They now have custom icon shapes, so you don't have to just be circles anymore, you can be like little weird X thing, you can be like.

• 58:00Speaker 04

  Squirls?

• 58:01David Imel?

Yeah, just different, there's like a triangle one, like a one that's like flat on the bottom, but then like a half circle on the top. Very strange. They're kind of just, you know, they're leaning into the material you kind of.

• 58:11Speaker 01

A lot of other launchers have this too. It's just like one more customization for your home.

• 58:15David Imel?

Yeah, yeah. Expanded themed icons. So before it was like you would, you would theme all the icons, but there would be of course like one or two apps that didn't support it and it looked horrible. Now they truly will force it on every single app. So it will work for every single app.

• 58:32Andrew Manganelli?

Are you, are we sure? The amount of times I've heard this will for sure work.

• 58:36Speaker 04

  It does work.

• 58:37Andrew Manganelli?

But I will say it doesn't work in the drawer. The drawer is still just a regular.

• 58:41David Imel?

  Yeah, which is.

• 58:42Andrew Manganelli?

I'm a little, I'm more okay with that, but.

• 58:45David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 58:45Andrew Manganelli?

There, I'm, there will be one icon that does not work somehow.

• 58:49Speaker 04

Well, Duolingo famously changes its icon all the time and it does have, like it did work on Duolingo. So if it worked on Duolingo, I would imagine it works on everything else.

• 58:57David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 58:58Andrew Manganelli?

  We did it.

• 59:01David Imel?

There's now an option to force dark mode on every app as well. So apps that don't have a dark mode, it'll basically just like invert the white colors to black, but it does it in a like smart, dynamic way.

• 59:12Speaker 01

You know what happened to me recently? I saw a screenshot on Twitter of Spotify light mode. And I went, wait a minute. I've never seen Spotify light mode. And I actually went into Spotify and started digging through settings. I was like.

• 59:25David Imel?

Is there actually a light mode in settings?

• 59:27Speaker 01

I found that there is not. Somebody just inverted Spotify.

• 59:31David Imel?

  Oh.

• 59:32Speaker 01

And it kind of looked decent. I'm sure AlbumArt looks weird, but um, yeah, there is no light modes for Spotify.

• 59:37David Imel?

  Interesting.

• 59:38Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 59:39Andrew Manganelli?

I'm, I'm interested in this one because without that, I already have this issue where sometimes on my Pixel, it decides that uh, so like the notification bar on the top that has my time and battery percentage, it won't invert that correctly with the mode of the app that I have open. So let's say I have YouTube open and it's got a white background. It won't change the time and battery to now invert to black. So now it's just fading into, we, I showed you this the other day. Or sometimes, yeah, like it's supposed to be black text and I have a dark mode thing. And I just lose my battery percentage.

• 1:00:13David Imel?

  Yeah, cause it disappears.

• 1:00:15Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. And I'll close the app and open it back up and that'll fix it. But like, I have very little faith in this if it's already screwing up that normally.

• 1:00:22David Imel?

Yeah. Yeah. There's kind of just a lot of features that they announced a long time ago, but they're like, I swear it works now.

• 1:00:28Andrew Manganelli?

  On God for real.

• 1:00:29David Imel?

  On God for real.

• 1:00:30Speaker 01

  No cap, no cap.

• 1:00:31David Imel?

You have expanded split screen options to like have multiple apps up in and now you can, you can like drag one to like show the amount that you want the app to be open. There's even a 90/10 split, so you can have an app open 10% and then have the other app open 90%.

• 1:00:48Speaker 01

Just like a sliver of the top of the app?

• 1:00:50David Imel?

Yeah, you got your little app ticker.

• 1:00:52Andrew Manganelli?

90% waveform podcast, 10% homework notes you should really be studying.

• 1:00:58David Imel?

Exactly. So that's, that feels like they are putting it in it to prepare for more foldable stuff, to be honest, just to be able to be more, more malleable in that way. One of the biggest changes, which Adam actually posted about on threads, you can now, no, not on threads, he posted about this in the Slack, you can now adjust the intensity which HDR content displays. There's a slider now, so it'll show you like the brightness that the HDR content comes through.

• 1:01:24Speaker 01

Dragging it all the way up.

• 1:01:26David Imel?

  Marques.

• 1:01:26Speaker 01

I'm dragging it all the way up.

• 1:01:27Andrew Manganelli?

  That's what it was.

• 1:01:28Speaker 01

I want it, I want to be scrolling with low brightness and I want to see your picture on Instagram and just boom.

• 1:01:35Andrew Manganelli?

Marques wants that flashbang in his bed.

• 1:01:38Speaker 01

  I want that impactful media.

• 1:01:41David Imel?

I just want to turn it all off.

• 1:01:42Speaker 01

Turn it all the way up.

• 1:01:42David Imel?

I hate HDR. And then I wrote, thank [bleep] below that.

• 1:01:49David Imel?

Okay, there is a new remove toggle when you're removing apps from your home screens. Now you don't have to like click and drag to the little like X in the top or bottom or whatever. When you like, when you press on it, there's just a little remove like option.

• 1:02:04Speaker 01

Lots of other launchers have that already also.

• 1:02:05David Imel?

  Yeah, it's faster, yeah.

• 1:02:06Speaker 01

Wait, no, just dragging it to this trash is faster.

• 1:02:09David Imel?

I don't think so, because you have to, you have to like long press it and then drag it?

• 1:02:12Speaker 01

That's always been faster for me, because there's always like five little, there's like uninstall, view info, and then the short, whatever shortcuts there are, so if it's a calendar event, it'd be like. If you long press on the calendar icon, it'll show new event, view calendar, uninstall, close, remove, and I have to find remove every single time. So I just found that just highlighting and just dragging them to the trash is faster.

• 1:02:33David Imel?

Hmm. Adam, do you have this yet?

• 1:02:35Speaker 04

Yeah, it's awesome. It's just like, um, not smart launcher.

• 1:02:40Andrew Manganelli?

Is there a chance you could accidentally press remove?

• 1:02:42David Imel?

  Can you show?

• 1:02:43Speaker 04

  Yeah, it's

• 1:02:44Speaker 01

  You have to find it.

• 1:02:45Speaker 04

You long press the icon and it just pops up like one of the little options there is just remove.

• 1:02:51David Imel?

  So that's

• 1:02:51Speaker 04

Yeah, Mark has had a bunch of other, yeah, a bunch of other

• 1:02:53Andrew Manganelli?

That's one of those things where I'm going to love that, but when my mom tells me like, Facebook is off my phone, it's like, you probably accidentally long pressed and hit remove.

• 1:03:02David Imel?

  Oh my god.

• 1:03:02Speaker 01

  I have to find remove.

• 1:03:04Andrew Manganelli?

It's the top, it's the first one.

• 1:03:06Speaker 01

It's in a different place every time. Like in Instagram, it was, it's the top this time.

• 1:03:11Andrew Manganelli?

  Things change.

• 1:03:12David Imel?

There is a new quick adding of app shortcuts in that same menu.

• 1:03:17Andrew Manganelli?

  Awesome.

• 1:03:17David Imel?

Yeah. So Adam, you want to explain that since you have a new phone?

• 1:03:20Speaker 04

I have this already and this is basically the same little gesture. If you just like long press something, certain apps have like quick functions you can do, like for example, Duolingo, if I long press, will just say, do you want to open Duolingo or do you want to like jump straight into a lesson? So instead of always clicking Duolingo, always clicking to my most recent lesson, I can do one of these app shortcuts and just hit do a lesson and it pops up as like a little shortcut on my like home screen. So then I can remove the actual Duolingo app and just have that there. So I can just go straight into a lesson every time.

• 1:03:51David Imel?

  That's nice.

• 1:03:52Speaker 04

There's a bunch of other apps that like also have similar things like YouTube. You can jump straight into shorts if you want for some reason. You could jump into subscriptions.

• 1:04:03David Imel?

Of course they would add that.

• 1:04:04Andrew Manganelli?

  I know.

• 1:04:06Speaker 04

There's a reason I chose YouTube. But yeah, there's like a, not all apps have this. I think it needs to be like implemented by the developer privacy, but like the WNBA app, I just have it straight up to give me the schedule, just like the games, show me the next games. That's it. I don't need to go in through, looking through the whole app. Yeah, it's pretty cool.

• 1:04:21David Imel?

  That's nice.

• 1:04:22Andrew Manganelli?

If Instagram has a shortcut to go straight to Reels, we just brought back IGTV.

• 1:04:28David Imel?

  It's essentially what it was.

• 1:04:29Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:30David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:30Andrew Manganelli?

  It was a separate app.

• 1:04:31David Imel?

  Just too early.

• 1:04:32Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:33David Imel?

Okay, there's a new widgets view. So if you, we remember Android only decided to care about widgets again after Apple started doing widget stuff, but better. Cause they hadn't updated them since like 2012. Now there's a very rich widget showcase that has two little options. There is a featured tab and there is a. I wrote it down here. Uh, where is it? Yeah. Featured tab. Oh, sorry. There's a featured tab and there is a browse tab. The featured tab will show like. The richest, most fun, most interesting widgets that it assumes you want to use. And then the browse will just like. Kind of showcase all the widgets. What's nice about it is that it's rich, so it shows them sort of moving and doing the things that they do.

• 1:05:14David Imel?

Instead of the old version of adding widgets where it was just like, you would just select from a number and you didn't really know what they looked like and all this stuff. Yeah, it's much better now.

• 1:05:24David Imel?

Quick share now allows you to do the tap thing that you can do on iPhones where you tap your phones together. So if you have quick share on, you can tap to connect to another.

• 1:05:34Andrew Manganelli?

Do you think that would work with an iPhone?

• 1:05:35David Imel?

  No.

• 1:05:37Andrew Manganelli?

Do you think it does like a cool animation?

• 1:05:38David Imel?

  No.

• 1:05:39Andrew Manganelli?

  Really?

• 1:05:39David Imel?

It doesn't. I saw someone demo it. It doesn't do an animation.

• 1:05:42Andrew Manganelli?

How have I never realized that like? The tap to share thing is kind of like two phones dabbing each other up or like. Send me your contact info.

• 1:05:53David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:53Andrew Manganelli?

  Works to me.

• 1:05:54Speaker 03

A lot of these features, this is the first time we've seen Google do Android stuff that iOS had already implemented and not the other way around.

• 1:06:03David Imel?

No, no, it's, it's, this has happened many times. They steal from each other.

• 1:06:06Speaker 03

Okay. I, I thought it was always Apple just copying.

• 1:06:09David Imel?

It was at the beginning and then they would innovate and then Android was like.

• 1:06:13Speaker 04

This is almost Google copying other launchers.

• 1:06:17David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:17Speaker 04

They're making a Pixel launcher just like straight up.

• 1:06:19David Imel?

  They're Sherlocking other launchers.

• 1:06:20Speaker 04

Yeah, just like, oh, you wanted this? Here it is. Now, if I could just get rid of the add a glance widget, that'd be great.

• 1:06:25Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, my God. Yeah, how is that not? I would return all of these just to remove add a glance on my home screen.

• 1:06:32David Imel?

  Oh, my gosh.

• 1:06:33Andrew Manganelli?

It's insane. What is add a glance? It's, okay.

• 1:06:36David Imel?

  Oh, God.

• 1:06:37Andrew Manganelli?

  Here's my.

• 1:06:37David Imel?

  I know what it is.

• 1:06:39Andrew Manganelli?

Ellis, this is why it's insane. It takes up a part of your home screen and can be a bunch of small, little notifications or the weather or time. You can turn it off, but it keeps it there. Just it doesn't give you the notifications. You can never take it off of your home screen.

• 1:06:56David Imel?

  It's permanent real estate.

• 1:06:57Andrew Manganelli?

And it's just like the date. And then it just goes like the date and time, which I already have.

• 1:07:02David Imel?

  In the corner.

• 1:07:03Andrew Manganelli?

In the corner. And I have my clock widget that I like. Clock widget is almost unnecessary with that, but I still prefer a bigger clock. But that means I also have to have add a glance. If there, if there's something I can't wait to be on killedbygoogle.com, it's add a glance widget.

• 1:07:22David Imel?

Okay, there are expanded biometrics options. So you can select apps that you want to force to use like face detection for phones that support, you know, face, their version of Face ID, which is, you know, not usually not IR, but you can force it to have additional security through face unlock, which is helpful. And then a little small thing, there's now a time zone changed notification that you can enable. So if you live in the European Union, you love trains and you're not sure.

• 1:07:55Speaker 04

  As you know.

• 1:07:55David Imel?

As you do. And you're not sure if your phone has updated the time zone yet, which is important for when you're setting calendar appointments and you're doing all that kind of stuff. You can now make it so your phone will give you a notification saying the time zone changed to this time zone.

• 1:08:10Andrew Manganelli?

  That's sick.

• 1:08:10David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:11Speaker 04

  Very useful.

• 1:08:12Andrew Manganelli?

I immediately thought of a short. Where you go on the the line of a time zone difference and you jump back and forth between it and see how many notifications.

• 1:08:21Speaker 01

That's another one of those things. That's like oceans and seas. Like, when am I actually in the other time zone? Like, I know that there's a time zone line on a map, but is it really like a two foot difference between time zones? There's no way like I can step two feet over. Time isn't real, Marquez. I mean, I know that.

• 1:08:36Andrew Manganelli?

  I think.

• 1:08:37Speaker 01

  Talk to Arizona. We know.

• 1:08:38Andrew Manganelli?

I think I'm developing this too much as like that one spot in Arizona where you can jump between like four states.

• 1:08:44Speaker 01

Which that part is real, which is super cool. I just wonder like I know whenever I whenever I land at an airport in a new time zone and I take my phone off airplane mode, it takes like 10 seconds and it like goes, oh, you're on a new time zone. And it just changes the clock. Nothing happens. So it's like cool that it'll tell me I'm in a new time zone. But I do wonder, where exactly does that switch over? Yeah, there's probably, there's gotta be a little. I wanna know. I kinda wanna know.

• 1:09:10Speaker 03

What do you mean? It's just the state lines.

• 1:09:12Speaker 01

  Yeah, but is it?

• 1:09:13Speaker 03

In the US, it's the state line.

• 1:09:14Speaker 01

So if I, because when I'm driving on a road and I see the welcome to New York sign, that's not the exact state line. That's often like 800 yards later.

• 1:09:23Speaker 03

If there's no people in a place, it doesn't matter what time it is.

• 1:09:27Speaker 01

Yeah. Multiple states have, and it's not the state line. But there's a, there's a time zone line, let's say in Ohio, right?

• 1:09:36Speaker 03

Michigan. Michigan, Michigan's the farthest one.

• 1:09:38Speaker 01

Alright, so if I live on one side of the line and I drive my car to the next town over on the other side of the line, my phone will switch.

• 1:09:47Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:09:48Speaker 01

At what moment is my phone triggered to switch? Is it when my GPS coordinates are exactly one meter past an exact line, which is somewhere?

• 1:09:57Speaker 03

  I would imagine so, yeah.

• 1:09:58Speaker 01

And then can I just ping back and forth over that line by like two yards and switch my time zone back and forth? This is useless.

• 1:10:05Andrew Manganelli?

I think it will, yeah, yeah.

• 1:10:06Speaker 03

No, I would imagine so, yeah.

• 1:10:08Andrew Manganelli?

  I just wanna check. I don't think it's, I don't think it's state lines.

• 1:10:11Speaker 03

  Really?

• 1:10:12Andrew Manganelli?

  Which is confusing.

• 1:10:13Speaker 03

Are there states in multiple time zones?

• 1:10:14Andrew Manganelli?

According to this map, and this is not an AI overview.

• 1:10:18Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:10:19Andrew Manganelli?

Um, but it's funny because I didn't think it. Then you said that I was like, that would make the most sense. Like, because it's weird to be in the same state on multiple lines.

• 1:10:27Speaker 04

Time zones in general don't make sense. Tom Scott has a great video about this from like a decade.

• 1:10:31Andrew Manganelli?

I, that's all you have to tell me and I agree.

• 1:10:34David Imel?

I just would like to, this is like, this is something I would do for a YouTube short is just go to the line with my phone and just walk across the line and see what happens.

• 1:10:42Andrew Manganelli?

Well, what's confusing though also else is it looks like sometimes it uses a state line and sometimes it doesn't.

• 1:10:49David Imel?

  That's wrong.

• 1:10:50Andrew Manganelli?

  It seems like Texas.

• 1:10:52Speaker 03

  Kansas? Brutal.

• 1:10:57Speaker 03

  For more than that reason.

• 1:11:00Andrew Manganelli?

I don't even talk about time zones.

• 1:11:03Speaker 03

Oh no, I was right. Michigan is the far, I mean, unless you count that little sliver of Indiana.

• 1:11:06David Imel?

It's a little sliver of Indiana.

• 1:11:08Speaker 03

Yeah, but that's why Michigan is so fun in the summer because it's so far west that the sun doesn't set until like nine or 10 p.m.

• 1:11:18David Imel?

  That's nice. That's awesome.

• 1:11:18Speaker 03

  It's so fun.

• 1:11:19Andrew Manganelli?

Wow. Isn't there a city in Michigan that you yelled at a couple of months ago? Anyway. Detroit?

• 1:11:26Speaker 03

What's really funny is I talk all this smack about Detroit, which then gets cut from the podcast, I really hope. But my Safari, uh, my, my Safari, like when I open Safari, the default background is Cade Cunningham. So playoff Cade.

• 1:11:39David Imel?

All right. That was a basketball reference. Cave's really good right now.

• 1:11:42Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah. Chris Paul too.

• 1:11:45Speaker 03

  Too soon.

• 1:11:47Andrew Manganelli?

That's gonna age really poorly if something crazy comes out in the next two days.

• 1:11:53David Imel?

Anyway, are they like, okay, anyway, sorry, time zone change.

• 1:11:57Speaker 03

  Not gonna answer that.

• 1:11:58David Imel?

Time zone change on Android, biggest feature. Um, that's about it for that. So, so if you've got a Pixel or you're on Android, exciting times. It's kinda, I'm kinda jealous. I've been on iOS for a little bit now and I'm pretty jealous that they just get like random feature drops like this.

• 1:12:14Speaker 03

I will say, it has been very nice being on Android this time around.

• 1:12:17David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:18Speaker 03

Like every year I jump back and forth and I stand by it that iOS I think has better apps. But Android as an operating system is so fun.

• 1:12:27David Imel?

Dude, it's so much more fun. Liquid, liquid ass is so bad. It's so bad. And like, and material three expressive, horrible name, is great.

• 1:12:38Speaker 03

  Or like material pee expressive.

• 1:12:44Andrew Manganelli?

  It was on print.

• 1:12:46David Imel?

  Yeah, well, it's good.

• 1:12:47Speaker 01

  Material limoncello.

• 1:12:48David Imel?

  Right, right, limoncello.

• 1:12:50Speaker 01

Do you want to talk about YouTube recaps?

• 1:12:51Andrew Manganelli?

Why don't we make after the next ad break, all our recap?

• 1:12:55David Imel?

  All the recaps.

• 1:12:56Andrew Manganelli?

  Because it's all recap news.

• 1:12:58David Imel?

Yeah, that's true. All right, just to wrap it up. Related to last week, last week, we talked about how DJI, or maybe it was two weeks ago, I don't know. It was either the last week or the week before. I don't know what time zone I was in.

• 1:13:11David Imel?

So we talked about how DJI might get banned from the United States before the end of the year because of this. They have to do a security clearance thing that they're probably not going to do because they're lazy. And if that happens, that would be weird because the Osmo Pocket 4, which if for those that don't know, the Osmo Pocket is probably DJI's most popular product for creators. It's this little tiny thing that's basically a smartphone sensor, but I don't know why people buy it, but they like it.

• 1:13:37Speaker 01

  It's pretty good.

• 1:13:37David Imel?

It's good. It's popular. The Pocket 4 just passed the FCC, which is the Federal Communications Commission in the United States. It was just certified by the FCC, which means it is, its launch is usually quite imminent after things pass the FCC, like within a month or two, but they're going to be banned within three weeks. So the options here are like, they pass the FCC, but they just never sell it in the US? Or it passes the FCC and it's sold for two weeks?

• 1:14:08Speaker 01

If it passes the FCC, would they revert it? Because once it's banned, everything, everything they make, period, is banned?

• 1:14:14David Imel?

They can't import any devices into the United States after that. So unless they did the Nintendo Switch 2 thing where they just fly as many in as possible.

• 1:14:23Speaker 01

I was picturing a timeline where they're like, this just got approved. Everyone scrambles, ship as many to the US as possible and just store them somewhere. So that when they get banned, we can at least profit from selling the ones that we made over the line.

• 1:14:34David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:34Speaker 01

  Before the door closed.

• 1:14:35David Imel?

  It is possible.

• 1:14:36Speaker 01

  That's crazy.

• 1:14:37David Imel?

Yeah, it's crazy. So it's kind of like a will they, won't they kind of thing.

• 1:14:43David Imel?

Or we'll just go to Canada.

• 1:14:44Speaker 01

Buy one from Best Buy in Canada.

• 1:14:46David Imel?

Oh, true. Yeah, I guess I could do that.

• 1:14:48Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:14:49David Imel?

Anyway, okay, we're gonna do trivia and then we're gonna recap our years

• 1:14:53Speaker 01

  All the things.

• 1:14:54David Imel?

through various data tracking algorithms. And we're gonna like it.

• 1:14:59Speaker 03

But first, I have to correct myself. One, Andrew, thank you for pointing out that I do not know how time zones work. Totally lie.

• 1:15:06Andrew Manganelli?

I realize I know way less about time zones than I thought I did.

• 1:15:09Speaker 03

Time.gov is a really cool website I found.

• 1:15:11David Imel?

  I love it.

• 1:15:12Speaker 03

The second correction is earlier I said in between 10 and 30% of Meta's profits come from scams. Allegedly, I was wrong about that. The Reuters article claims that Meta internal documents say that 10% of their profits come from scams. Adam?

• 1:15:31David Imel?

What does Arizona think they're so much better than everybody else?

• 1:15:34Andrew Manganelli?

  They're right.

• 1:15:35David Imel?

  Arizona mountain standard time.

• 1:15:37Speaker 01

  Come on, y'all.

• 1:15:38David Imel?

  Come on, guys.

• 1:15:38Speaker 01

But also, we kind of are jealous a little bit.

• 1:15:40David Imel?

  I'm pretty jealous.

• 1:15:41Andrew Manganelli?

  Very jealous.

• 1:15:41David Imel?

They just never have to deal with this bullshit.

• 1:15:43Speaker 03

Basically, daylight savings. Question number two. So we just spent most of that segment talking about all the new Android features in the QPR2 release, right?

• 1:15:54David Imel?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:15:54Speaker 03

  What does that stand for?

• 1:15:56David Imel?

I have an idea, but I'm not sure.

• 1:15:58Andrew Manganelli?

  Zero.

• 1:15:59David Imel?

  I forgot.

• 1:15:59Speaker 01

I did know this like a couple of months ago, and I just don't remember anymore at all. It's totally escaped me. Which means I'm gonna guess, and then r/Android is going to declare me an idiot.

• 1:16:11Speaker 03

  Well, that's just like...

• 1:16:11David Imel?

That's already happened. That's already happened.

• 1:16:13Speaker 01

That's unavoidable. I just was forecasting a little bit.

• 1:16:17Speaker 03

Fun fact, the people who make QPR2 are the same people that make the mayonnaise. You know, that was originally gonna be my question, but I was like, they're not gonna know what I'm talking about.

• 1:16:25David Imel?

  I love QP mayonnaise.

• 1:16:26Speaker 03

  QP mayonnaise.

• 1:16:27David Imel?

  Rich brought in QP mayonnaise.

• 1:16:29Speaker 03

  Eric brought it.

• 1:16:30Speaker 01

Eric brought the QP mayonnaise. That did happen. All right, well, we'll all either know it, or we'll take a guess. And answers will be at the end like usual. We'll be right back.

Support for the show comes from Jira by Atlassian. So AI is only as useful as the context it has to work from. But when that context is scattered across tools like threads and DMs, that means your team and your AI agents end up flying kind of blind. That's the problem Jira solves. What's the goal tied to your project? What got decided last week in Slack? Atlassian's teamwork graph pulls all of these pieces together from Jira, Confluence, Slack, GitHub, and more, so nothing falls through the cracks.

• 1:18:34Speaker 01

All right, this week YouTube proved that they do at least hear what we are saying to them. Because they announced a feature that I, and others, Hank Green notably, have been pitching on Twitter for years since they killed YouTube Rewind, which is, we want wrapped.

• 1:18:53David Imel?

I still want them to call it Rewind.

• 1:18:54Speaker 01

I want, I, I said they should have called it Rewind, and that's totally fine, I get it, they want to abandon the name, but the idea would be, I just want to know like, all the stats and numbers and insights and analytics from the videos that I watched on YouTube this year. I watch a lot of YouTube. And, contra, or kinda similarly to Spotify wrapped, I feel like it's kind of like a window into who you are. It's kind of like an interesting insight into your year. So, YouTube did finally do that this year, and it's rolling out this week. Almost all of us have it, Andrew still hasn't gotten it, it's supposed to be like, this week globally.

• 1:19:27Andrew Manganelli?

Arguably the most Google faithful here.

• 1:19:29Speaker 01

With the Google phone, doesn't have it yet. But, it's called YouTube Recaps, and if you do have it, you can open it up, it's in your account page, and it can walk you through, it was, it's kinda like a first gen product. It's not the most insightful thing in the world, but it shows you like, the channels you watch the most, and like, the genres you watch the most, and it's kinda interesting, and I feel like I've had some things that I learned, and some things that were like, clearly wrong in there.

• 1:19:51David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:19:51Speaker 01

But, uh, it was cool. It did, I think my most interesting stat is I watched, allegedly, 1,880 channels this year.

• 1:19:59David Imel?

  Oh my god.

• 1:20:01Speaker 01

I watched 538. You watched 3 times as much YouTube as me.

• 1:20:05Andrew Manganelli?

Do you scroll shorts on there?

• 1:20:06Speaker 01

  Uh, on the YouTube app?

• 1:20:07David Imel?

  Does that count?

• 1:20:08Speaker 01

  Yeah, that would count.

• 1:20:09Andrew Manganelli?

  That has to count.

• 1:20:10David Imel?

  Really?

• 1:20:10Andrew Manganelli?

  I could see that fly.

• 1:20:12Speaker 01

That shouldn't. Well, it's interesting, yeah, I guess that would instantly bump up the number of channels you watch.

• 1:20:16David Imel?

This doesn't show any shorts channels when I look at the channels, though.

• 1:20:19Speaker 01

  It also didn't.

• 1:20:20Andrew Manganelli?

  What do you mean?

• 1:20:22Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:20:22Andrew Manganelli?

I mean, like, these 2 have shorts on them, so like...

• 1:20:25David Imel?

I mean, they have shorts on them, but they're not main shorts.

• 1:20:27Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, but it still can show up in the shorts.

• 1:20:29Speaker 01

This could just be long form. It could be. I'm not sure that it includes shorts, and it doesn't say, there's no like, numbers to any of this, it's just kinda telling me like, here's what you watched, but I feel like this could just be long form.

• 1:20:40David Imel?

  Well, my top channel?

• 1:20:42Speaker 01

Is the waveform podcast. Hell, yeah. I bet some people watching this, their top channel is waveform podcast. Yeah. Uh, so shout out to you guys. Maybe send us the screenshots on Twitter.

• 1:20:50Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, they have.

• 1:20:50Speaker 01

Oh, they have. Appreciate it all.

• 1:20:53Andrew Manganelli?

I would argue, most people watching this probably has it as their top channel, because if you watch it on YouTube, the hours you are putting in.

• 1:20:59Speaker 01

  That's true.

• 1:21:00Andrew Manganelli?

  It's just default.

• 1:21:01Speaker 01

And again, it doesn't. It doesn't say how it's measuring it. Is it by hours? Is it by total views? Is it by percentage of catalog watched? Cause I saw a couple of channels in here that like, I haven't watched that many videos of them, but. I'm in the top 3% of waveform viewers. That's pretty definitive. You watch a lot of it and most, more than most people. And I make a lot of it.

• 1:21:21Speaker 03

How many channels did you say you watched?

• 1:21:23Speaker 01

  Mine said 1,880 channels.

• 1:21:25Speaker 03

  Okay, I, I got 1,707.

• 1:21:28Speaker 01

  Hell, yeah.

• 1:21:29Andrew Manganelli?

Do you watch shorts on YouTube?

• 1:21:30Speaker 03

  No.

• 1:21:30Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay.

• 1:21:31Speaker 01

So, yeah, it feels like it could just be long form. And then it shows like a screenshot of like a bunch of channels and it seems like it's. So while I'm playing Dota, you're watching YouTube. Yeah.

• 1:21:39Speaker 03

  What I.

• 1:21:39Andrew Manganelli?

  Elvis is sleeping.

• 1:21:40Speaker 03

The thing is that, Mark has, you were not on the list of my tech channels that I watched.

• 1:21:45Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:21:45Speaker 03

You were, you were categorized in my recap as a business insights channel.

• 1:21:49Speaker 01

  Oh, that's really interesting.

• 1:21:50Speaker 03

Yeah, the number one business insights reviewer in the world.

• 1:21:53Speaker 01

Business, I mean, I'll take it.

• 1:21:56Andrew Manganelli?

I saw someone say that waveform clips was categorized under gaming.

• 1:21:59Speaker 01

  Yeah, I saw that too.

• 1:22:00Andrew Manganelli?

We know a lot about gaming. We've never had anything wrong about it.

• 1:22:03Speaker 03

We are the Nintendo Switch 2 podcast.

• 1:22:06Andrew Manganelli?

  Honestly, maybe that's why.

• 1:22:08Speaker 01

There's a good amount, so it gives me. YouTube recap gave me my top three genres. So one was tech news, two was sports content, three was comedy. Didn't know that, but I guess that's technically true. Uh, and then it gives me a couple of other things. It doesn't show me, I would say Spotify rap is a more developed product. Yeah. With more interesting insights. Very developed. But shout out to YouTube for actually listening. This is a good first try. Now, next year.

• 1:22:35Andrew Manganelli?

  Do better.

• 1:22:35Speaker 01

Build in some interesting like, like, number crunching or like insights like how many hours of YouTube did I watch this year? I want to know that. I want to know, uh, something Spotify did this year with Rapped is they analyzed your listening history and just came up with a, a listening age. And it gives you a number of like, you have the listening habits of a 20 year old or a 70 year old. Um, interestingly, today is my 32nd birthday and it said mine was exactly 32. Hilarious.

• 1:23:07David Imel?

  Crazy.

• 1:23:07Speaker 01

Um, I also think like if Amazon did a Rapped, it would know way too much about you to get it wrong. And it would just tell you your exact age.

• 1:23:14Andrew Manganelli?

This is totally not because I'm really salty that I'm the only person here without recap right now. I feel like, like the reason Spotify Rapped works so well is because it has a singular day where everybody is sharing it. So to roll this out gradually and like not have everyone having it and sharing it at the same time. It's just the amount of people who are gonna be like, oh, I'm hyped. I want to go look at it. And it's not in your profile. You've just lost.

• 1:23:39Speaker 01

Sounds like a you problem. Yeah.

• 1:23:41David Imel?

  YouTube problem.

• 1:23:42Speaker 01

Well, YouTube rolls out features in stages and waves a lot. And I, I almost wonder if they even have the ability to like, I mean, other than removing the like dislike button.

• 1:23:51David Imel?

  They can do it.

• 1:23:52Andrew Manganelli?

They're a trillion dollar company. They can do this.

• 1:23:54Speaker 01

They should be able to pull, they should be able to hit a button and every single thing on the second largest website on the planet should change.

• 1:23:59David Imel?

What was your YouTube award? Mine is the most likely to have the latest tech and still know the best local coffee shop.

• 1:24:06Speaker 01

That is extremely accurate. That's pretty specific.

• 1:24:10David Imel?

  Extremely accurate.

• 1:24:11Speaker 03

Mine was the most likely to know what's going on behind the scenes of a news story before other people have heard the news story.

• 1:24:19Andrew Manganelli?

  Wow.

• 1:24:20Speaker 01

  That's also very specific.

• 1:24:21Andrew Manganelli?

  That's not insinuating.

• 1:24:23Speaker 01

  You just know.

• 1:24:23Speaker 03

  I'm a fucking genius, right?

• 1:24:26David Imel?

He's the one that committed the crime.

• 1:24:29David Imel?

My award is most likely to find the coolest new gadget before everyone else.

• 1:24:34Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah, that's mine.

• 1:24:35David Imel?

  That seems pretty generic.

• 1:24:36Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 1:24:37David Imel?

To be honest. Are you the curious mind? I'm the curious mind. I'm the That's my personality. The wonder seeker.

• 1:24:42Andrew Manganelli?

I'm the wonder seeker. Marquez, do we have the same YouTube recaps?

• 1:24:45David Imel?

  Maybe. Tech product reviews.

• 1:24:47Andrew Manganelli?

Did you also, was Bad Bunny also your top listen to?

• 1:24:49David Imel?

No, I've never heard a Bad Bunny song in its entirety.

• 1:24:52Andrew Manganelli?

  That is a lie.

• 1:24:53David Imel?

  In its entirety?

• 1:24:55Andrew Manganelli?

  Bad Bunny was yours?

• 1:24:56Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 1:24:57David Imel?

  On my Spotify?

• 1:24:58Speaker 07

  Hey!

• 1:24:59Andrew Manganelli?

  Bad Booney.

• 1:25:00David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:25:00Andrew Manganelli?

Do you know that line in the office where he's like, "I love inside jokes. I'd love to be part of one one day." That's how I feel right now with all you guys. I don't know what any of you are talking about.

• 1:25:09David Imel?

You know, it's funny, after you watch your YouTube recap, it has you do a questionnaire to whether or not you think that it It was good. It was good or not. Hey. Whether or not it actually, it says, "Rate your level of agreement. This recap reflects who I am, my interest preferences, et cetera." It's, they're trying.

• 1:25:24Andrew Manganelli?

The first screen, if you look, very small text at the bottom, it says, "AI can make mistakes." So it was definitely made with AI.

• 1:25:31David Imel?

Damn. I mean, I don't, I'm not shocked. Microsoft uses AI. Yeah, I can make mistakes. It does say that, very tiny, very small text. I'm sorry, Andrew. Yeah.

• 1:25:40Andrew Manganelli?

Anyway. So irrationally mad about it.

• 1:25:44David Imel?

  It's kind of like

• 1:25:45Andrew Manganelli?

And before everyone asks my, I don't have my history deleted or anything, like I don't have any of the special things that would not let me have it. YouTube just hates me.

• 1:25:53David Imel?

Well, I still have my Google Photos recap, which was what we were about to talk about.

• 1:25:57Andrew Manganelli?

No, I don't have that either. That I do have, which is

• 1:26:00David Imel?

  You have it?

• 1:26:00Andrew Manganelli?

  I do have that.

• 1:26:01David Imel?

  Wow. So Google gave that

• 1:26:03Andrew Manganelli?

Do you want to go to that? Yeah, we'll go to Google. Are you guys done with?

• 1:26:05David Imel?

We'll just finish up Google, yeah.

• 1:26:06Andrew Manganelli?

  YouTube recap?

• 1:26:07David Imel?

Yeah. Still should have been called, should have been called YouTube.

• 1:26:10Andrew Manganelli?

  Agreed, that's the

• 1:26:11David Imel?

And I, I do want to say really quickly, I know that YouTube Rewind got progressively more cringe, but I like, I feel like there's something cultural about that, you know?

• 1:26:19Andrew Manganelli?

Keep the name, like, own the name. I know if, they must have really, really realized how bad it was.

• 1:26:26David Imel?

Corporate wanted to bury it, but it would have been way better to own it. What has changed though, like, that, this is something I've been thinking about a lot recently. There's not really like, a singular cultural event that everyone, like, it doesn't happen that much anymore, that there is one topic that everyone is watching and seeing and talking about. So. Because of algorithmic timelines and everything being curated to for you. So now like the YouTube rewind. You know, it already felt a little out of touch because it would be some like. Artists that you hadn't you've never heard of them before. And it was like, oh, they were really popular. That's crazy. But now it'd be like, I would not recognize literally anything that happened on it.

• 1:27:04Speaker 01

Which is why this is a perfect replacement for it. So it's just telling you about yourself and what you watch.

• 1:27:09David Imel?

But I want to feel more connected to the world.

• 1:27:11Speaker 01

That's why the best YouTube rewinds, the best YouTube rewinds were the first few where it was just the extremely, extremely small selection of the couple of memes.

• 1:27:21David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:27:21Speaker 01

  Everyone was aware of.

• 1:27:23David Imel?

Which there are like no memes that everyone's aware of anymore.

• 1:27:26Speaker 01

There's only like five, like six, exactly. Six, seven. You've all seen it.

• 1:27:29David Imel?

  The only thing.

• 1:27:30Speaker 01

They've all heard, you've all seen maybe like one major sports event of the year.

• 1:27:35David Imel?

Yeah, I was gonna say sports.

• 1:27:36Speaker 01

Major cultural like event or one or two celebrities that like. Had a big moment or something like that. That would be it.

• 1:27:44David Imel?

  But I feel like.

• 1:27:45Andrew Manganelli?

I mean, in tech space, even now, the Android releases are not going to be like a big Android 17.

• 1:27:50David Imel?

  I know.

• 1:27:50Andrew Manganelli?

They're all just coming out all the time constantly.

• 1:27:53David Imel?

There used to be stuff every day on Twitter that we would, they would be the topic of the day. That does not happen almost at all anymore.

• 1:28:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:28:02David Imel?

Every now and then, but not very often.

• 1:28:04Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:28:04David Imel?

  If you were in charge.

• 1:28:06Speaker 01

If you were in charge of YouTube Rewind today and you were trying to do it the same style as the last few rewinds, you have a list like 70 pages long of things to include and it would just be impossible.

• 1:28:15David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:28:15Speaker 01

So glad they didn't try that.

• 1:28:17David Imel?

  Like K-pop.

• 1:28:18Speaker 03

Yeah, I feel like it'd be like.

• 1:28:19David Imel?

  K-pop Demon Hunters.

• 1:28:20Speaker 03

  K-pop Demon Hunters, Coffeezilla.

• 1:28:22David Imel?

  K-pop.

• 1:28:23Speaker 03

Like, I feel like this was kind of his breakout year. Or did he start?

• 1:28:25David Imel?

No. That was like two to three years ago. His breakout year was probably two to three years ago.

• 1:28:32Andrew Manganelli?

I think when like the bigger NFT crypto scam.

• 1:28:35David Imel?

  Yeah, the 2022.

• 1:28:37Andrew Manganelli?

It might be longer than last year.

• 1:28:38Speaker 03

No, no, no, no, no. In 2022, I think he was still a coffee channel.

• 1:28:42Andrew Manganelli?

I didn't even know he was a coffee channel.

• 1:28:44David Imel?

Doing a lot of the crypto stuff during the metaverse wave.

• 1:28:48Andrew Manganelli?

His most popular video, three years ago, four years ago, two years ago, two years ago.

• 1:28:52David Imel?

  Yeah. Yeah.

• 1:28:54Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 1:28:55David Imel?

  Twenty twenty two.

• 1:28:56Andrew Manganelli?

Probably actually two years ago was his really big year.

• 1:28:59David Imel?

The biggest YouTubers were still Mr. Beast and like the most obvious ones that you're thinking of. T series.

• 1:29:06Andrew Manganelli?

  And that's fine.

• 1:29:06David Imel?

All right. Tell us about Google Photos recap that apparently only you have, Andrew. Yeah, this is the pixel reward.

• 1:29:12Andrew Manganelli?

This is, this is my pixel reward, not the other Google product from YouTube. Um, I mean, Google Photos is awesome already in that it does a lot of these like memories together or like this day back, like photos from this day in previous years. Um, but it pretty much just gives you at the top of your screen, a like twenty twenty five year recap. Um, and you just scroll through it and it pretty much is just going to show the people you took the most photos of. I have eighteen hundred photos of Lane apparently from this year. Which is then funny because then it's Claire and then my, the third person is just Lane, but it doesn't

• 1:29:50Andrew Manganelli?

put Lane's name to the face. So, uh, but yeah, it's just kind of going through all how, people you've taken photos of.

• 1:30:00Andrew Manganelli?

You know, mine is just all Lane pretty much, but exploring new places, things you've done. I've gone to a lot of Devil's Games, theme parks, I guess. It's.

• 1:30:10David Imel?

It's another good service to have a rewind.

• 1:30:12Andrew Manganelli?

And then it throws some videos at the end, just like clips them all together, which is awesome. I think as a parent right now.

• 1:30:19David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:30:19Andrew Manganelli?

This is like one of the coolest things ever.

• 1:30:21David Imel?

Maybe that's why I gave it to you first.

• 1:30:23Andrew Manganelli?

Possibly. Um, and this is really cool because I can share it just through Google Photos with other people. I, I think like, one last thing about.

• 1:30:32David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:30:32Andrew Manganelli?

Harping on being a parent is like, you have a kid, start a shared Google Photos album with everyone who might take pictures of them that they can then look at and it's the best thing ever.

• 1:30:42David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:30:42Andrew Manganelli?

  I, I think that's really awesome.

• 1:30:44David Imel?

Yeah. They also added a new feature to this Google Photos recap where you can now export directly to CapCut. For some reason, it's specifically CapCut and they have a bunch of different templates where you can put different photo reel stuff in it.

• 1:31:02David Imel?

Yeah, I guess it's like they really want you to make a short out of it or something.

• 1:31:06Andrew Manganelli?

  I'm sure to share it.

• 1:31:07David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:31:08Andrew Manganelli?

The other funny thing is there's also an option called replace people or photos. So I guess if you, cause I guess we all take photos of like random things all the time, maybe a receipt.

• 1:31:18David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:31:19Andrew Manganelli?

Maybe just like, this is where I am. So like, if that happens to pop up, you can replace the photo. Replace people is really funny. I guess maybe if you take too many photos at like work and there's someone from work that you don't want to be with all your other family members, I'm assuming it will take out the couple slides that's dedicated to that person.

• 1:31:37David Imel?

  The tags that recognizes, yeah.

• 1:31:39Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. So you can edit it.

• 1:31:42Speaker 04

I'm glad because not to go dark, but that could also be a thing if you lost a family member this year and then it's giving you a recap of like.

• 1:31:49David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:31:50Speaker 04

Look at all these pictures and I don't want to see that right now.

• 1:31:53David Imel?

That might be like good to see the memories of the person, but like if you broke up with somebody, then you don't want to see the memories of the person.

• 1:31:58Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:31:59David Imel?

Yeah. I can see that. Well, that's depressing.

• 1:32:02Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 1:32:02David Imel?

  Spotify.

• 1:32:05David Imel?

Um, is the next one. Spotify got kicked off this whole like recap thing and now frigging eight sleep is probably doing a recap. Wait, I want that. How you slept this year. Wait, I want that. Eight sleep wrapped?

• 1:32:18Speaker 04

I didn't get the Spotify age thing.

• 1:32:20Andrew Manganelli?

  You didn't?

• 1:32:21Speaker 04

  No.

• 1:32:21David Imel?

  It's in, it's in the.

• 1:32:22Speaker 04

  I know, I was looking.

• 1:32:23Andrew Manganelli?

In your rap, it didn't, huh?

• 1:32:25Speaker 04

  No, I guess I'm timeless.

• 1:32:28Andrew Manganelli?

That's what I want to ask. I think there was two main things in raps this year that were different that were fun. And one is it calculates your age based on music you listen to. And also the last one was towards the end, it created files of kind of like your most music listening day. It would be like the day you listen to the most different genres, the day you listen to this one artist too many times and had a little recap, but I wanted to ask what everyone's listening age was.

• 1:32:56Speaker 04

  Mine is forty seven.

• 1:32:57Andrew Manganelli?

  Forty seven?

• 1:32:58David Imel?

  Mine is thirty two.

• 1:32:59Andrew Manganelli?

Thirty two. That's hilarious because it's your birthday.

• 1:33:01David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:33:02Andrew Manganelli?

I think David and I are on the older end.

• 1:33:03David Imel?

  Mine was eighty seven.

• 1:33:05Andrew Manganelli?

I thought it was seventy two.

• 1:33:07David Imel?

  Oh, was it seventy two?

• 1:33:08Andrew Manganelli?

Mine was, so mine's kind of interesting because it's also old. I believe it's sixty eight. The only thing is. And Marques had an interesting point about this, so maybe he's right. I listen to a lot of older music.

• 1:33:21David Imel?

  Oh, seventy-three.

• 1:33:21Andrew Manganelli?

  Seventy-three, okay.

• 1:33:22David Imel?

Sorry, not eighty-seven. Alice doesn't have it.

• 1:33:24Andrew Manganelli?

  That's wild.

• 1:33:25David Imel?

  Yeah. Who is the oldest?

• 1:33:26Andrew Manganelli?

It knows you make fun of Spotify all the time.

• 1:33:28David Imel?

I'm the enigma, baby. I mean, my genres are indie pop, ska punk, Minneapolis sound, whatever that means. That's Prince. Pop and alternative rock. And how is that seventy-three?

• 1:33:41Andrew Manganelli?

I think it's more based on when the music came out and when you're in a process, it'd be.

• 1:33:46David Imel?

Yeah, I mean, it plays Joni Mitchell when I, um.

• 1:33:49Andrew Manganelli?

Mine's, wait, mine played Bruce Springsteen when it said sixty-eight, but it also said in my top genres, number four was lullaby because of how many things I played for Lane, which makes me wonder if my age should be way higher and that's actually pulling my average down really hard, but then you said.

• 1:34:05David Imel?

I thought it was interesting, like, obviously, a lot of one-year-olds listen to lullabies, but maybe they're not the ones listening to it on Spotify. It's their parents who are listening to the lullabies on their Spotify, so it knows based on you listening to lullabies that you are around a parent's age.

• 1:34:19Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 1:34:20David Imel?

Potentially. Great point. They also just know how old you are.

• 1:34:24Andrew Manganelli?

That was the thing. I, I think you just, it just knows that, but it's supposed to just tell you your listening age. It's just sad that mine's the same as my age. If it was just trying to actually guess our age, it's all really bad.

• 1:34:34David Imel?

  It's perfect.

• 1:34:35Andrew Manganelli?

  It's boring.

• 1:34:35David Imel?

I also found a very funny, I, I forgot to mention this. I found a very funny bug in the YouTube recap. So as many people know, I watch almost every video at, at least two X speed.

• 1:34:48Andrew Manganelli?

  Unfortunately.

• 1:34:48David Imel?

The YouTube music, the YouTube recap will play music in the background based on a song that you've listened to through YouTube Music, apparently. I don't really know how it picks it, but if the last video that you watched on YouTube before you start your recap, you were watching at two X speed or, or something else, it plays that song at two to three X speed.

• 1:35:08Andrew Manganelli?

  No.

• 1:35:08David Imel?

Nice. So watch this. So if I, I don't know if we can play this because I, copyright, but if I switch, let me just switch this playback speed to, to three X. Okay.

• 1:35:18Andrew Manganelli?

You're just in like a random video right now?

• 1:35:20David Imel?

Just a random video. And then I go to my YouTube recap.

• 1:35:28David Imel?

And it's like doing the recap, but it's like playing it at 3X.

• 1:35:33Andrew Manganelli?

Wait, can you find royalty free music to do this?

• 1:35:36David Imel?

It just picks. No, no, you don't get to pick. Only does your most played song through YouTube Music as your background.

• 1:35:41Speaker 03

Streetlight Manifesto sped up just sounds like Through the Fire and Flame.

• 1:35:44David Imel?

I thought it was Through the Fire and Flame. Yeah, well, that song's not technically out yet, so maybe it's not copyrighted.

• 1:35:52Speaker 03

I'm pretty sure Through the Fire and Flame's been out for quite some time, baby.

• 1:35:57David Imel?

I played Through the Fire and Flame at a party and someone was like, what is this? And I was like, oh, my God. Is that person uncultured?

• 1:36:03Andrew Manganelli?

That's why your listening age is 73.

• 1:36:07David Imel?

  Dragonforce. That is really funny.

• 1:36:10Andrew Manganelli?

Well, anyway, if you guys, if you guys have us on your wrapped or your recap, because we could be on your YouTube recap or your Spotify wrapped, send it to us.

• 1:36:21David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:36:21Andrew Manganelli?

  I want to see it.

• 1:36:22David Imel?

Yeah, I want to see it.

• 1:36:23Andrew Manganelli?

I also wanted to end this with one other wrapped we got is in Megaphone, we get wrapped for creators, which if you guys want to open the link, you can, we have not looked at this, but this is basically our wrapped for waveform of people who listen to us. I thought we'd go through it really quick. I think we usually do this every year. So if you guys want to pull it up at the production desk, let's go. 2025, this year is quite the year for you. Scroll down.

• 1:36:50Speaker 03

This is just on Spotify or is this across?

• 1:36:52Andrew Manganelli?

Well, no, Megaphone is across all audio.

• 1:36:54Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:36:54Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. So this should do everything. It's just that Megaphone's owned by Spotify now. So little proof that hard work pays off. 2.3 million total plays. Again, audio only. 9% increase of total audience from last year.

• 1:37:08Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 1:37:09Andrew Manganelli?

122,000 total new audience. Wait, what? Isn't that what we just, a total audience, total new audience, 56.8K, up 350% from last year.

• 1:37:21David Imel?

Our audience. I'm not sure how it's.

• 1:37:23Andrew Manganelli?

I don't know what that means.

• 1:37:25David Imel?

Well, this is audio, right? This is, this is just through Spotify? Or is this?

• 1:37:29Andrew Manganelli?

No, it's Megaphone. This is all, this is what pushes to RSS.

• 1:37:32David Imel?

  Yeah. It's cool.

• 1:37:34Andrew Manganelli?

That sounds like a totally wrong number. Total followers, 274,000, up 7% from last year.

• 1:37:41David Imel?

  Is that right?

• 1:37:42Andrew Manganelli?

  52.6 million minutes of listening.

• 1:37:46David Imel?

How many, uh, do I have more hours in Dota 2 than?

• 1:37:48Andrew Manganelli?

Hours, well, here we go. Hours of listening, 877,000 hours of listening.

• 1:37:53David Imel?

  Pretty close.

• 1:37:54Andrew Manganelli?

That is 36.5,000 days, 5.2,000 weeks.

• 1:38:01David Imel?

  Is that just this year?

• 1:38:02Andrew Manganelli?

1.2,000 months and 100 years, centennial.

• 1:38:09David Imel?

  Wow.

• 1:38:10Speaker 04

  We're a blue zone.

• 1:38:11Andrew Manganelli?

  This is our centennial.

• 1:38:14Speaker 03

Blue zone. That's so many dishes.

• 1:38:17David Imel?

  It's a lot of dishes.

• 1:38:18Andrew Manganelli?

  Wait, is that it?

• 1:38:19Speaker 04

  Yeah, that's it.

• 1:38:20Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, wait, no, no, the charts.

• 1:38:21David Imel?

  Number nine?

• 1:38:22Andrew Manganelli?

  We hit number.

• 1:38:24David Imel?

  Number nine, what?

• 1:38:25Andrew Manganelli?

The charts, Waveform FKBHD Podcast, you hit number nine.

• 1:38:29David Imel?

  Like total?

• 1:38:30Speaker 03

Number nine, we're sorry. We know we had hands. We didn't think it hurt that bad.

• 1:38:35David Imel?

Do we hit the number nine?

• 1:38:37Andrew Manganelli?

I just, what is the chart? It just says the charts. You were on the charts for 43 weeks. You charted in eight countries.

• 1:38:44David Imel?

  That's not me.

• 1:38:46Speaker 03

  What does that mean?

• 1:38:47David Imel?

Clearly, they did not put as much work into.

• 1:38:49Andrew Manganelli?

They put way too much work in the animations for all of this because they're really good.

• 1:38:54Speaker 03

  Thanks, daddy.

• 1:38:55David Imel?

One episode, ooh, our most popular episode.

• 1:38:57Andrew Manganelli?

What do you think are, what episode rose above the rest?

• 1:38:59David Imel?

You already know which one it is. Vision Pro.

• 1:39:01Speaker 03

  Apple iPhone.

• 1:39:02Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah, was it Vision Pro?

• 1:39:04David Imel?

Our live, oh, yeah, our Apple Park event.

• 1:39:08Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, 40,000 more than the average episode.

• 1:39:11David Imel?

  Wow, nice.

• 1:39:13Speaker 03

Wait, was that our, that wasn't the?

• 1:39:14Andrew Manganelli?

No, it was the one right after.

• 1:39:16Speaker 03

  I was gonna say, yeah.

• 1:39:17Andrew Manganelli?

  We're still quoting it.

• 1:39:19David Imel?

  Whatever that means.

• 1:39:21Andrew Manganelli?

Hot takes, leave notes, and everything in between. Love notes.

• 1:39:25David Imel?

  What does that mean?

• 1:39:26Speaker 03

These are all the comments we haven't enabled.

• 1:39:28Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, no, it's the comments that we barely know how to read.

• 1:39:33David Imel?

  Well, there's hundreds of them.

• 1:39:34Andrew Manganelli?

YouTube needs to fix this episode, got the most comments. Or, uh, the most used emoji was a thumbs up. The United States left 716 comments. Most comments were left on June 19th. Sorry, were you gonna say something else?

• 1:39:49David Imel?

  Is that just?

• 1:39:49Speaker 03

  Is this on Spotify?

• 1:39:50Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, this is through Spotify. Sorry, if you comment on Spotify.

• 1:39:56David Imel?

  Good job.

• 1:39:57Speaker 04

  We've never seen it.

• 1:39:59Andrew Manganelli?

It's just, we don't have a process in place to like actively.

• 1:40:01David Imel?

  Can't reply to them.

• 1:40:02Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah, replying to them.

• 1:40:03David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:40:04Andrew Manganelli?

Our listening pass. Oh, this is the most fun part. They're like 158 countries reached.

• 1:40:09David Imel?

  There are 158 countries?

• 1:40:11Andrew Manganelli?

  There's, I can't name all the planet.

• 1:40:14David Imel?

Uh, oh, oh. All right. Top countries, United States, United Kingdom, India, Canada, Germany. Everybody else needs to step it up.

• 1:40:26Andrew Manganelli?

  Come on, man.

• 1:40:28David Imel?

Get your friends to listen. You're never gonna chart at this rate. You're charted. You charted number nine.

• 1:40:35Andrew Manganelli?

Um, your show made it to the top of many fans lists.

• 1:40:39David Imel?

  What's a list?

• 1:40:40Andrew Manganelli?

  I don't know. It's, it's next to charts. You're a top 10 show for 71,000 fans. That's pretty awesome.

• 1:40:46David Imel?

  That's cool.

• 1:40:47Andrew Manganelli?

Top five for 55,000 fans. Number one show for 18.7,000 fans.

• 1:40:52David Imel?

  That's great.

• 1:40:53Andrew Manganelli?

  Shout out fans.

• 1:40:54David Imel?

  Including me on YouTube.

• 1:40:57Andrew Manganelli?

Your top fans streamed 2.6 times more than everyone else. Yeah.

• 1:41:03Speaker 03

I feel like this has to just be Spotify. There's no way they could collect.

• 1:41:05David Imel?

Yeah, this feels like Spotify only data. I don't think they can collect this data.

• 1:41:09Speaker 03

They don't have user data from RSS.

• 1:41:11Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay.

• 1:41:12Speaker 03

Unless they're like logging everybody's IP all the time.

• 1:41:15Andrew Manganelli?

  Minutes and stuff like that.

• 1:41:17Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:41:17Andrew Manganelli?

  Total, err.

• 1:41:18Speaker 03

  That could probably be.

• 1:41:20David Imel?

  This is a Spotify URL.

• 1:41:21Andrew Manganelli?

I have no idea. Well, it's a Spotify URL because it's through Megaphone, which is what pushes to RSS for us.

• 1:41:25David Imel?

There's a Spotify logo on the corner.

• 1:41:27Andrew Manganelli?

  Because Spotify owns Megaphone.

• 1:41:28Speaker 03

  Yeah, but.

• 1:41:29David Imel?

  I think it's pretty clear it's Spotify.

• 1:41:31Andrew Manganelli?

This is all just Spotify? Then that's crazy because all these numbers are way higher because Spotify isn't even our most listened to.

• 1:41:36Speaker 03

I don't know because Megaphone gives us, um.

• 1:41:42Andrew Manganelli?

Megaphone gives us numbers outside of Spotify.

• 1:41:43Speaker 03

Gives us numbers outside of Spotify. That's what I'm saying. I think the, I would guess that the listening numbers are probably from all platforms because you can detect how many times an RSS feed is polled from Megaphone servers. But I don't, I don't know how they would know like our, like your users' top shows from RSS infrastructure. It's, it's really simple syndication.

• 1:42:03David Imel?

Keep scrolling. These, these get really interesting when you scroll down.

• 1:42:06Andrew Manganelli?

  The top artists?

• 1:42:07David Imel?

The top artists from people who listen to our podcast. What?

• 1:42:12Andrew Manganelli?

Do you know, I don't know one or two, which is probably.

• 1:42:15David Imel?

  I don't know one. I don't know two.

• 1:42:17Speaker 03

  Yeah, who's four?

• 1:42:19Speaker 01

Three is Kendrick Lamar, four is Taylor Swift, and five is Drake.

• 1:42:22Speaker 03

  Who?

• 1:42:22Speaker 01

Top audiobooks you guys listen to. Number one, John Green, Everything is Tuberculosis. Number two, Ezra Klein, Abundance. Number three, Gary Stevenson, The Trading Game.

• 1:42:34Speaker 03

  Whoa.

• 1:42:35Speaker 01

Number four, James Clear's iconic Atomic Habits book. And number five, Mark Manson, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a [BLEEP]. Wow.

• 1:42:46Andrew Manganelli?

It's, there's something funny about talking about not giving a [BLEEP] and then censoring the word [BLEEP] on the cover.

• 1:42:52Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:42:53Andrew Manganelli?

Sounds like you give a little bit.

• 1:42:55Speaker 01

You gotta sell the book everywhere. You gotta sell the book. And then other top shows that you guys listen to.

• 1:43:00Andrew Manganelli?

  Let's just say number two.

• 1:43:01Speaker 01

Number one, well, Jerry is the most popular podcast on earth, so Joe Rogan is number one. The Wann Show, number two. The Verge Cast, number three. The New York Times Daily, number four. The Bill Simmons Podcast, number five.

• 1:43:13Speaker 03

  Waveform listeners know ball.

• 1:43:14Speaker 01

You know ball? Y'all know ball? Okay.

• 1:43:17Andrew Manganelli?

Pretty awesome that the Jerry Rick Everything Experience is the number one podcast. That's, that is interesting.

• 1:43:22Speaker 01

Um, who's Bill Simmons? Sports commentator. Just leave it at that. Sports guy. Big sports guy.

• 1:43:29Speaker 03

  Alright.

• 1:43:30Speaker 01

Yeah, the, the last thing says, fans listen to you for longer than 99% of other shows. So we have a show that keeps people listening for long durations.

• 1:43:39Speaker 03

  Wow.

• 1:43:39Speaker 01

Which for a podcast, I feel like is a pretty big achievement. That's pretty cool.

• 1:43:42Speaker 03

Honestly, shout out to Adam for that, because if you were in the room with us, you would leave so fast.

• 1:43:47Andrew Manganelli?

  It's a good.

• 1:43:48Speaker 01

  I haven't left yet.

• 1:43:50Andrew Manganelli?

Contractually, very close guys. I have to cut them sometimes where you leave to the bathroom.

• 1:43:54Speaker 01

  Oh yeah, that's true.

• 1:43:55Andrew Manganelli?

You receive more shares than 99% of other shows?

• 1:43:58Speaker 01

  Really?

• 1:43:59Andrew Manganelli?

  That feels like something.

• 1:44:00Speaker 01

  It is a lot.

• 1:44:01Andrew Manganelli?

That feels like a great accomplishment.

• 1:44:03Speaker 01

They shared all the iPhone, the iPhone video. iPhone.

• 1:44:06Andrew Manganelli?

  And that's it.

• 1:44:07Speaker 03

  Nice.

• 1:44:08Speaker 01

  Well, we charted.

• 1:44:11David Imel?

Whatever that means, we did that. Doc, I charted. We charted.

• 1:44:15Speaker 03

  We charted, we listed.

• 1:44:19David Imel?

And now we trivia. Unlike Nathan Drake, who uncharted, we charted. We charted. Sea of Thieves. Chatted the seas.

• 1:44:28Andrew Manganelli?

  Alright, relax.

• 1:44:32Andrew Manganelli?

  And another thing!

• 1:44:34David Imel?

Also, I just blinked. What's an ocean, anyway? I just blinked and this animation thing was like in my... Cause it's like pulsing.

• 1:44:42Speaker 03

I learned when I was really young, that C is for cookie. And that's good enough for me.

• 1:44:51David Imel?

We could have solved that whole argument with that one. I did long division for this one, so this is... Was that the first question, though?

• 1:44:57Speaker 03

How did you do long division?

• 1:44:59David Imel?

  For the first question?

• 1:45:00Speaker 03

I don't see, I don't see any... In this class, you gotta show your work, brother.

• 1:45:04David Imel?

  I did long division.

• 1:45:05Andrew Manganelli?

  Would you ask ChatGPT?

• 1:45:07Speaker 03

Okay. Guys, the 1+15's battery is insane. How many times larger in milliamp hours? Is it larger or longer? Doesn't matter.

• 1:45:16David Imel?

  Larger.

• 1:45:16Speaker 03

How many times more in milliamp hours is the 1+15 than my 12 Mini?

• 1:45:25Andrew Manganelli?

  Closest delta.

• 1:45:25Speaker 03

  Closest?

• 1:45:27David Imel?

  Oh, boy.

• 1:45:27Speaker 03

  Delta.

• 1:45:28David Imel?

  Oh, wait.

• 1:45:33Speaker 03

We have really milked this piece of music for so much at this point.

• 1:45:36David Imel?

  It's incredible. It's timeless.

• 1:45:38Speaker 03

I wish I remember who wrote it.

• 1:45:40David Imel?

Let's switch to Sid Meier's Sim Golf theme song next. You guys probably haven't heard it. Sid Meier's Civilization. I was gonna say, we were both like, Marcus, everyone's heard of Civilization. I heard of Sid Meier's Sim Golf.

• 1:45:55David Imel?

Oh, boy. Oh, please, please give me the win. No.

• 1:45:59Andrew Manganelli?

  These are close answers.

• 1:46:00Speaker 03

  These are close answers.

• 1:46:01David Imel?

  It ain't 2,400 million hours.

• 1:46:02David Imel?

I showed more work than both of you guys, David.

• 1:46:05Speaker 03

  What is your answer?

• 1:46:07David Imel?

  4.2X.

• 1:46:09Speaker 03

All right, I will tell you now that you are the farthest.

• 1:46:11David Imel?

  What?

• 1:46:12Speaker 03

  Away.

• 1:46:12David Imel?

  Oh.

• 1:46:13Speaker 03

  From what I can see.

• 1:46:13David Imel?

  All right.

• 1:46:15Speaker 03

Andrew. Yes. What did you put? 3.15. 3.15. That puts you point 12 away from the correct answer. Mark has, what did you put?

• 1:46:27David Imel?

  I think he's right. I, I know that 1 plus 15 has a 7300 milliampere battery.

• 1:46:32Speaker 03

  That is correct.

• 1:46:33David Imel?

I was guessing that your phone's in the ballpark of 2400, which I think might be too high.

• 1:46:38Speaker 03

  It is too high.

• 1:46:39David Imel?

  I have.

• 1:46:39Speaker 03

  That's too high.

• 1:46:40David Imel?

I was thinking it was 1500. I have 3.1X, which I'm realizing is a little low.

• 1:46:45Speaker 03

I'm sorry, I, I'm going to round that to 3.10 because you do not have. Oh, wait, that's what you meant by, that you weren't like, X was not a variable. Oh, yeah.

• 1:46:54David Imel?

  No, no, no.

• 1:46:55Speaker 03

  3.1 times.

• 1:46:55David Imel?

  Right.

• 1:46:56Speaker 03

The correct answer is 3.27, which gives Andrew.

• 1:47:02David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:47:02Speaker 03

  The point.

• 1:47:03David Imel?

So what is the milliampere of the iPhone?

• 1:47:06Speaker 03

I believe it is, I believe it is 2227.

• 1:47:10David Imel?

For some reason, I was guessing like 1500.

• 1:47:12Speaker 03

  I was guessing more.

• 1:47:13David Imel?

You know, you know why I guess 1500? It was the usable milliampères of Ellis's battery.

• 1:47:18Speaker 03

  That's what I was guessing.

• 1:47:20David Imel?

  Wow.

• 1:47:20Speaker 03

  It's like 800.

• 1:47:21David Imel?

Probably 1500 by this point. That's what I was thinking.

• 1:47:24Speaker 03

I was in Chinatown buying fish balls for David and I, and.

• 1:47:27David Imel?

  They're so good.

• 1:47:28Speaker 03

I, the guy, the fish ball at Mr. Chang's Fish Ball Store was, was like, oh, you should scan this QR code and leave a review of my fish balls. And I was like, yeah, I love it, man. I come here all the time. And I opened my camera app to scan it and my camera broke. It didn't work. So I, like, at this point.

• 1:47:47David Imel?

  Hmm.

• 1:47:47Speaker 03

  This point.

• 1:47:48David Imel?

Are you just gonna upgrade your phone?

• 1:47:49Speaker 03

  It's a feature phone.

• 1:47:50David Imel?

  Are you gonna upgrade it?

• 1:47:52Speaker 03

As soon as I can get a 17 Pro for under $1,200, sure, but like, come on, man.

• 1:47:59David Imel?

Are you gonna get the small one?

• 1:48:01Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:48:01David Imel?

  The small one's not 1,200.

• 1:48:03Speaker 03

It starts at, it starts at 11 and then now you should never buy base storage iPhones, so.

• 1:48:08David Imel?

  Doesn't it start at 999?

• 1:48:09Speaker 03

  No.

• 1:48:09David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:48:10Speaker 03

  Yeah?

• 1:48:11David Imel?

  10, 10. Oh, a Pro? Oh, it's 1099. 1099.

• 1:48:14Speaker 03

A Pro. It starts at 1099.

• 1:48:15David Imel?

  1099. Yeah.

• 1:48:17Speaker 03

All right, I'm gonna pass it over to Adam to do a score update and hit you with question number two. Get him.

• 1:48:25Speaker 04

  Well, that's getting cut.

• 1:48:29Speaker 04

Quick update on the score. Marquez with 10. Andrew, after that correct answer with 13. David bringing up the reader with 9. David, this is your chance. What does QPR2 mean?

• 1:48:44Speaker 04

For the Android updates that we spoke about.

• 1:48:48Speaker 03

QPR2 is when you exchange a bribe for fish eggs. Quid pro quo.

• 1:49:00Speaker 04

  One point to Alice.

• 1:49:06Speaker 04

This is it. Flip him and Reed, what do you got? I'll go David first.

• 1:49:10Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, duh.

• 1:49:12Speaker 01

  I did.

• 1:49:12Speaker 04

  Oh, wait.

• 1:49:13Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:49:15Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, I think Marquez is right.

• 1:49:16Speaker 01

  I think Marquez is right.

• 1:49:17Speaker 04

  Okay, well.

• 1:49:18Andrew Manganelli?

I wrote, "It means nothing," hoping that it just didn't really mean anything. Because I couldn't even pretend to make up letters.

• 1:49:24Speaker 04

That would have been hilarious, but no.

• 1:49:25Speaker 01

I wrote Quarterly Pixel Release 2.

• 1:49:28Speaker 04

Okay, and Marquez, what did you write?

• 1:49:30Speaker 01

I wrote Quarterly Public Release 2. It's Marquez, huh? I don't think it's public, though.

• 1:49:35Speaker 04

Neither of you were correct. It's Quarterly Platform Release 2. Close enough, close enough.

• 1:49:40Speaker 01

Nice work. And neither of us can claim close as Delta because we're both one word off.

• 1:49:44Speaker 04

Yeah, you're both one word off.

• 1:49:45Speaker 01

Because it's a word. Unfortunately, that means I.

• 1:49:48Speaker 01

There's not distance between words. Actually, there isn't 3D space, so. Well, hey, nobody gets those points, but we all learned something today. Shout out to those of you who have a singer wrapped or your recaps. And, yeah, because I get it wrong every week. So I just learn something every week. And thank you for watching and for listening and subscribing. We'll catch you very soon in our more regularly scheduled programming in Techember.

• 1:50:12Andrew Manganelli?

  No.

• 1:50:13Speaker 01

We're just forcing it at this point. Techember. See you soon.

• 1:50:16Speaker 03

  It's his birthday.

• 1:50:17Speaker 01

  Oh, true. You're right, Marquez.

• 1:50:21Speaker 03

Waveform is produced in a small studio in between the Labrador and Sargasso Seas by Ellis Rovin and Adam Molina.

• 1:50:28Speaker 04

The Caspian Sea is a lake!

• 1:50:30Andrew Manganelli?

  Bingo!

• 1:50:31Speaker 03

Our theme music is written by Vane Sill, and we're part of the Vox Media Podcast Network.

• 1:50:36Speaker 01

  We're written by the Vox.

• 1:50:38Speaker 04

  Written by the Vox Media.

• 1:50:47Speaker 03

  I'm on oceanservice.noa.gov.

• 1:50:50Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:50:51Speaker 03

And they say, "A sea is the part of the ocean that is near land." That's it.

• 1:50:56Speaker 04

Oh, I thought it came after "be."

• 1:50:58Andrew Manganelli?

  That's a terrible explanation.

• 1:51:00Speaker 03

  That's not.

• 1:51:01Andrew Manganelli?

I can go to the Atlantic Ocean.

• 1:51:03Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:51:04Speaker 01

So not all ocean is sea, but all sea is part of ocean.

• 1:51:09Andrew Manganelli?

So it's some of the parts of the ocean that are near land.

• 1:51:13Speaker 03

It's a part of an ocean that's vaguely near land. That's not just like far out of the ocean.

• 1:51:17Speaker 04

So it's not like a hard line. It's like a gradient.

• 1:51:19Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:51:22Andrew Manganelli?

That's a weird way of describing it.

• 1:51:23Speaker 03

  I don't think so.

• 1:51:24Andrew Manganelli?

But it's just like, it makes you think any parts of the ocean that are near land are seas, which is not true.

• 1:51:30Speaker 03

Well, think of it this way, is like, when you're, when you're actually sailing, right? Like, land, these like, big masses of stuff really affect weather patterns.

• 1:51:39Andrew Manganelli?

So we're talking about land's land?

• 1:51:41Speaker 03

What? Nah, I'm talking about air land.

• 1:51:43Speaker 01

I like my chat GPT definition, actually. Oh, no. Okay, and mine is personalized to give me analogies. So, so think of the ocean as the plant's giant main stage of salt water. There's only a few, they're immense, they're deep, and they connect continents. A sea is like a side room off of that stage, smaller, shallower, often partly enclosed by land, and commonly linked to an ocean. So oceans shape global circulation and climate with broad uninterrupted waters. Seas sit on continental margins, like the Caribbean Sea, the Mediterranean Sea. They can have distinct conditions and ecosystems and are more influenced by nearby land and rivers. Do they have to be a certain size?

• 1:52:23Andrew Manganelli?

  That's a better...

• 1:52:23Speaker 04

Alice has the perfect image for this. So if anyone is confused, look at the video version, because I will have this image in the podcast.

• 1:52:30Speaker 01

Do they need to be of a certain size?

• 1:52:31Andrew Manganelli?

If you say, "It's the part of ocean by land," that's a confusing way of describing it.

• 1:52:37Speaker 01

Wait, so the, um, because in Santa Cruz...

• 1:52:41Speaker 01

Like that's a like that's a bay because there's Santa Cruz, there's the Monterey Bay, which is like the area that separates Santa Cruz and Monterey.

• 1:52:49Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, wait, so what's the difference between a bay and a sea?

• 1:52:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:52:52Speaker 04

  A bay?

• 1:52:52Speaker 03

We're, we're, we're thinking of these terms as like, you know, these hard geographical, or I guess not geographical, it's the ocean, but, but the reason I would, I would assume the reason that these terms are different is because when you're sailing on the water, the conditions, the average weather, it's going to be different when you're out in the open ocean versus vaguely near a massive land, right? So just saying the Atlantic Ocean has these conditions is not specific enough because the Labrador Sea and the Sargasso Sea are going to be, require different sailing techniques to traverse them.

• 1:53:27Speaker 04

Also, all the oceans are connected.

• 1:53:29Andrew Manganelli?

So the Gulf of Alaska, Alaska goes all the way down to?

• 1:53:34Speaker 03

The Bering Sea. Oh, all the way down?

• 1:53:36Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah, where like?

• 1:53:38Speaker 01

  Chilean.

• 1:53:39Speaker 04

  It's like the general.

• 1:53:40Andrew Manganelli?

Like this is a bunch of seas nobody's uses and then all of a sudden it's like.

• 1:53:45Speaker 04

Does it have something to do with like the ocean floor, like where it drops off to deeper parts and that would be the ocean?

• 1:53:50Speaker 01

Yeah, we could go to the Labrador Sea. I've never heard of most.

• 1:53:53Speaker 04

  Lincoln Sea?

• 1:53:54Speaker 03

We're not, you're not, we're not sailing, like they don't, we're not traversing the oceans, they don't have meaningful differences.

• 1:54:00Speaker 01

Also, the Gulf of Mexico is a gulf.

• 1:54:02Andrew Manganelli?

I'm just saying like this thing is.

• 1:54:03Speaker 01

Not a sea. So it's even more enclosed because I'm looking at the, the Bay of Bengal right now. I'm feeling like that's kind of a gulf.

• 1:54:11Andrew Manganelli?

We brought up a map that has a bunch of seas. None of us use the terms for it, but then it's also just missing a giant portion.

• 1:54:18Speaker 01

  There's a lot of seas.

• 1:54:19Andrew Manganelli?

That's like still land connected to ocean.

• 1:54:22Speaker 01

  Yeah. Anyway.

• 1:54:23Speaker 04

This didn't help me at all.

• 1:54:24Speaker 03

  Yeah, this didn't help.

• 1:54:25Speaker 01

What was your question? Wait, Ellis, what was your question?

• 1:54:28Speaker 04

  What's the difference between the?

• 1:54:30Andrew Manganelli?

I'm just saying the, the original explanation was a poor explanation and Ellis is trying to prove it with a map that nobody cares about and is still proving me right. What's the sea off California? Near land.

• 1:54:43Speaker 03

It might, it might not have a denotation because it's not necessary to separate from the rest of the Pacific Ocean.

• 1:54:50Speaker 01

This doesn't even show Gulf of Mexico.

• 1:54:51Speaker 03

The Pacific Ocean is called the Pacific Ocean because it's-

• 1:54:53Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, but all, nevermind. This is a pointless conversation.

• 1:54:56Speaker 01

What about around like Hawaii? Is there like a sea?

• 1:54:58Speaker 04

No, it's the Pacific. I feel like that's too small.

• 1:55:01Speaker 01

It doesn't talk about the Gulf of Mexico at all.

• 1:55:04Andrew Manganelli?

It's supposed to be seas, which is weird that it says Gulf of Alaska.

• 1:55:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:55:09Andrew Manganelli?

I'm just saying, I think the saying seas are oceans near land is confusing because there are also oceans near land.

• 1:55:16Speaker 01

  I Google Hawaii Sea.

• 1:55:17Andrew Manganelli?

And I think just a step further explaining it is not that unreasonable.

• 1:55:20Speaker 01

Apparently the Hawaii Sea is the Pacific Ocean surrounding the Hawaiian Islands.

• 1:55:23Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:55:24Speaker 01

But that is, that might be made up.

• 1:55:26Speaker 04

So I think you're agreeing with Ellis. You just wish that it was more specific.

• 1:55:29Andrew Manganelli?

Exactly. That's all I've ever said.

• 1:55:31Speaker 01

  Less, he wants less specific.

• 1:55:33Andrew Manganelli?

  No, I want more specific.

• 1:55:34Speaker 01

I thought you didn't want the seas. You just wanted those.

• 1:55:36Andrew Manganelli?

No, no, I'm just saying the very vague definition of a sea is ocean next to land. Which is what you first said, right? Or am I wrong on that? And then my whole argument's dead.

• 1:55:47Speaker 01

It's technically not wrong, but it's not actually-

• 1:55:50Andrew Manganelli?

  I just don't think it's a good description.

• 1:55:52Speaker 01

Wait, but look at this. The Caspian Sea is not even connected to the ocean. That's a, that's a lake. The Caspian Sea is a lake.

• 1:55:57Andrew Manganelli?

  You just don't see it?

• 1:55:58Speaker 01

  The Caspian Sea is-

• 1:55:59Andrew Manganelli?

  Black Sea is also connected.

• 1:56:00Speaker 01

Fully landlocked. Really? I can see how the Black Sea is connected. I just don't see how the Caspian Sea is connected. Yeah, wait, that, that is, the Caspian Sea isn't connected. It's landlocked. I mean, maybe it is. It's the biggest lake in the world. It might have a river that connects it to the ocean. Like the Great Lakes. No, I know this. The Caspian Sea is the biggest lake. Caspian?

• 1:56:16Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, you're right.

• 1:56:17Speaker 04

Maybe they just named it that before they made all these definitions.

• 1:56:19Speaker 01

This is bull****, man. This is bull****. The Caspian Sea is-

• 1:56:25Speaker 03

Do you realize there's not like-

• 1:56:26Andrew Manganelli?

  Also the Black Sea.

• 1:56:27Speaker 03

Like a, like a, like, you realize there's not like some group of guys in suits who are like, the, the official government of, of seas and saltwater that decide all this stuff?

• 1:56:36Speaker 01

I mean, they, they just did that with the Gulf of Mexico.

• 1:56:39Speaker 03

These are, these are, these are, these are terms that have been developed and cultivated over millennia of, of ocean faring. Like, like there doesn't have to be a reason.

• 1:56:49Speaker 04

Then why did you ask us a trivia question about?

• 1:56:51Speaker 03

  I didn't! I didn't! I didn't do any of this!

• 1:56:55Speaker 01

  This is Adam.

• 1:56:55Speaker 03

I'm trying to respect that sometimes language is cultivated by, over time, people doing cool stuff. And we can learn about that stuff. And we don't need to be like, that's **** stupid. Cause it's not stupid.

• 1:57:09Andrew Manganelli?

I think it's I guess my My argument is if we want to learn more about it, then we should have a better descriptor of it than just sea is ocean next to land. I think that doesn't give it enough credit. And I think there's a better way to describe it.

• 1:57:23Speaker 01

  And the Black Sea?

• 1:57:24Speaker 03

Explain, I think that we can use the simple it's near land because that will affect the ocean conditions, which is important because you need to know what kind of conditions your ocean craft is going to face.

• 1:57:37Andrew Manganelli?

  I'm not doing this anymore.

• 1:57:39Speaker 03

  He's just not listening.

• 1:57:40Andrew Manganelli?

I have an analogy. I think it's like how you still have the floppy disk as the save button. It's not actually a floppy disk. It's like an analogy for how we used to do.

• 1:57:48Speaker 01

The Caspian Sea is the only one that's not connected to the ocean. When it was called the sea, they should rename it as.

• 1:57:53Speaker 03

Yeah, the Caspian Lake. Did you watch the Hank Green video about fish recently? He talks about how there's all this argument, argument about whether sharks are fish or jellyfish fish. What actually is a fish? And the deeper you get into it, the more you realize it's literally impossible to decide.

• 1:58:12Andrew Manganelli?

I'm just, I don't know why you're because you're so mad at me because you think I don't believe you, but I believe you. And I'm just saying it would be easier for an average person to understand it with one more sentence tacked on to that.

• 1:58:27Speaker 03

And what I'm trying to say is the average person does not need to understand it because the actual cool, interesting, functional truth is complicated.

• 1:58:37Speaker 01

  The truth isn't complicated.

• 1:58:38Speaker 03

It's, it's based on all of this.

• 1:58:40Andrew Manganelli?

But your answer to a complicated thing is to be as vague as possible as a definition of it.

• 1:58:48Andrew Manganelli?

  I, I honestly don't understand.

• 1:58:50Speaker 01

What does AI overview say? AI overview did say that Listen to God. The Hawaii Sea is the ocean around Hawaii.

• 1:58:58Speaker 04

  No, it did not.

• 1:58:59Speaker 01

I Googled Hawaii Sea though, so I let it on. I definitely. Does Hawaii Sea exist? I don't know. AI overview seems like so.

• 1:59:05Andrew Manganelli?

You were asking for it, Marcus.

• 1:59:06Speaker 01

All I did was Google Hawaii Sea and it said, oh yeah, Hawaii Sea. That's, that's the water around Hawaii. I figured that's all I need to know. All right. All right.

• 1:59:15Andrew Manganelli?

Are you leading into the Android features?

• 1:59:17Speaker 01

  Android stuff. Okay.

• 1:59:19Andrew Manganelli?

  Let's hit it.

• 1:59:21Speaker 01

  All right, welcome back.

• 1:59:22Speaker 04

What's the difference between the ocean and the sea?

• 1:59:25Speaker 01

  Oh my gosh.

• 1:59:27Andrew Manganelli?

  I will.

• 1:59:27Speaker 01

  Chat GPT knows.

• 1:59:28Andrew Manganelli?

This all stemmed from me being horribly wrong about seas in the first place two episodes ago.

• 1:59:34Speaker 01

  Really?

• 1:59:35Andrew Manganelli?

Well, I just said like, no, seasoned oceans are different.

• 1:59:38Speaker 04

  They are different.

• 1:59:39Andrew Manganelli?

I know, and I know that.

• 1:59:40Speaker 04

Oh, but you said it like joking back then.

• 1:59:42Andrew Manganelli?

No, no, no, I thought they were, or like a...

• 1:59:45Speaker 01

I use them as synonyms, because people say the seven seas all the time.

• 1:59:48Andrew Manganelli?

  Wait, it all...

• 1:59:50Speaker 01

  Guys.

• 1:59:50Andrew Manganelli?

  I'm saying, no, no, no.

• 1:59:52Speaker 04

  No, no, no.

• 1:59:53Andrew Manganelli?

No, no, it did start from me being like...
