Support for the show comes from Jira by Atlassian. AI is only as useful as the context it has to work from. But when that context is scattered across tools, threads, and DMs, that means your team and your AI agents end up flying blind. That's the problem that Jira solves. What's the goal tied to your project? What got decided last week in Slack? Atlassian's teamwork graph pulls all these pieces together, from Jira, Confluence, Slack, GitHub, and more. So, nothing falls through the cracks. With Jira, you can actually share that context with the AI agents you already use, like Claude, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot, assign them work directly, or connect your agents through MCP. Spend less time digging through endless links and DMs, less time chasing down what got decided and by who, and more time actually shipping. Learn more at jira.com.

  That's J-I-R-A dot com.

• 1:21Speaker 02

  The first candy is dots.

• 1:25David Imel?

  Oh, wow.

• 1:26Andrew Manganelli?

  [bleep] go.

• 1:29David Imel?

  All right.

• 1:30Andrew Manganelli?

Guys, I'm not eating anything. Just kidding, it's the hardest thing to chew. I will eat it.

• 1:38Speaker 01

Yo, what is up, people of the internet? Welcome back to a spooky episode of the Waveform Podcast. We're your hosts, I'm Marques.

• 1:44Andrew Manganelli?

  I'm Andrew.

• 1:45David Imel?

And I'm, I was trying to think of a spooky joke, but it didn't come in time.

• 1:48Speaker 01

You should just say, "I'm iCloud."

• 1:51David Imel?

  I'm your iCloud password.

• 1:52Andrew Manganelli?

  Your full iCloud.

• 1:53Speaker 01

If you're watching this in video form, then you can currently see that everyone is wearing some form of a costume, because it's Halloween. And this is uploaded on Halloween, and we're in the Halloween spirit.

• 2:05Andrew Manganelli?

  Everyone.

• 2:05Speaker 01

Everyone. Yeah, well, we'll get into that in a second. But there is plenty to talk about still, because this is still being recorded in Techtober. Is this coming out in October now?

• 2:15David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 2:16Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah, it is.

• 2:16David Imel?

  It's coming out on Halloween.

• 2:17Speaker 01

Okay, great, perfect. So, it's still Techtober when you're listening to this.

• 2:19David Imel?

God, it's been Techtober for so long. I feel like I'm in tech purgatory right now.

• 2:24Speaker 01

And now we have, uh, we have iPhone Air sales updates. We have a new robot that is real, but also kind of not real. And maybe a rant about it. Uh, Adobe updates, nothing 3A Lite is a new phone. And we're going to end with a little Halloween candy ranking is what I've been told.

• 2:41David Imel?

And the Books Palma 2 Pro.

• 2:42Speaker 01

And David's holding a Books Palma 2 Pro. So that's all stuff today.

• 2:45David Imel?

For all my enjoyers out there.

• 2:47Speaker 01

Uh, anyway, should we just explain our costumes real quick?

• 2:50David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 2:50Speaker 01

Just because it probably looks insane to audio or video viewers, but audio viewers can't see.

• 2:55David Imel?

We'll have Adam record a separate little clip of us like twirling around that he can put in.

• 3:00Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, like a video game select?

• 3:01Speaker 01

Yeah. Well, cause your costume is pretty full, full on.

• 3:05David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 3:05Speaker 01

I think if this was a competition, I'd be voting for this costume.

• 3:08David Imel?

That's nice of you. That's thank you. Um, I, so for audio listeners, Moment released this new like backpack vest. It's supposed to be like, they released a bunch of new bags, but one of them is a vest for all your stuff instead of having a backpack, which is weird, but cool. But this one that they sent me, it looks like a fishing vest. And at the very last minute, I was like, I don't have a costume. Um, wait, fishing vest? I could be a fishing scam. So what I've done is I've taken the fishing vest and this really fishing hat thing. And I've stickied a bunch of fishing scams all over me.

• 3:44Andrew Manganelli?

  And the fishing pole.

• 3:46David Imel?

  The fishing, the fishing pole.

• 3:47Speaker 01

  Can't forget that.

• 3:47David Imel?

So, you know, it's similar to last year's language model where I just stickied a bunch of stuff on something else. But it's, um.

• 3:55Andrew Manganelli?

  Puns always win.

• 3:56David Imel?

I'll take it. I'll take it. So that's what I am.

• 3:58Speaker 01

  That's what I am.

• 3:59Andrew Manganelli?

  What are you, Marquez?

• 4:00Speaker 01

  Uh, I'm Gru.

• 4:02Andrew Manganelli?

  Gru.

• 4:03Speaker 01

Gru is a, is a character from a movie called The Minions, right? Is the name of the movie?

• 4:08Andrew Manganelli?

  Despicable Me?

• 4:08Speaker 01

  It's called Despicable Me.

• 4:09David Imel?

Despicable, okay. The Minions is a separate movie.

• 4:11Andrew Manganelli?

  It is a movie.

• 4:12Speaker 01

There is another movie called The Minions. And you might have, you might, you might know it as The Minions movie, maybe. Um, and there's a character that has this exact scarf and I am now him. I am him.

• 4:24Andrew Manganelli?

And every Gru needs a minion.

• 4:26Speaker 01

  Of course.

• 4:26Andrew Manganelli?

  Of course.

• 4:27Speaker 01

  Of course.

• 4:28Andrew Manganelli?

  Which.

• 4:30David Imel?

Which one are you, isn't it?

• 4:32Speaker 02

I don't know, can you guys tell which one between Adam and I, who's the pirate and who's the minion? It's pretty, pretty hard to tell.

• 4:39Speaker 01

We'll leave that up to the viewer.

• 4:40Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 4:40Speaker 01

  That's funny.

• 4:41Andrew Manganelli?

  Alice is a minion.

• 4:42Speaker 01

Alice is a minion. Adam, what are you?

• 4:44Speaker 04

Well, I came in as just a pirate and everyone was like, that's not tech. So I grabbed a bunch of VHSs and now I'm a movie streaming pirate.

• 4:50Speaker 01

You didn't have to give that away. You could have just said that you did it from the start.

• 4:55Speaker 04

  No, it's fine.

• 4:56Speaker 01

  You'd be like, I'm a pirate.

• 4:56Speaker 04

I'm honest here. We are nothing if not truthful on this podcast.

• 4:59Speaker 01

  Maybe you.

• 5:00Speaker 02

You picked the one video medium that literally has no data stream in it.

• 5:04Speaker 01

Here. And now it's infinite data.

• 5:06Speaker 04

  Now you're a pirate too.

• 5:09Speaker 01

  Got him.

• 5:09Andrew Manganelli?

  You better see that.

• 5:10Speaker 01

99 cents on the front of that. You didn't steal it. You paid for it. Anyway, Andrew, what are you? Yeah, Andrew, what is this?

• 5:16Andrew Manganelli?

  I'm Arc Browser.

• 5:19Speaker 01

  Wait, explain.

• 5:21Andrew Manganelli?

  Cause I'm a skeleton.

• 5:22Speaker 01

  Ooh. Ooh. Damn.

• 5:25Andrew Manganelli?

  Damn.

• 5:26Speaker 01

  Damn.

• 5:26Speaker 01

Well played. Deep cut. Well played.

• 5:28Andrew Manganelli?

I'm mostly just a lineup skeleton with no peripheral vision.

• 5:31Speaker 01

  I'm still using it.

• 5:32Andrew Manganelli?

  So far.

• 5:33Speaker 01

So far. For now. For now. For now. Run borrowed time. Wow. Okay. That is great. Happy Halloween, everybody.

• 5:39Andrew Manganelli?

  Happy Halloween.

• 5:40Speaker 01

Well, you know what else might be dead soon?

• 5:43Speaker 01

The iPhone Air. I hope not.

• 5:45Andrew Manganelli?

It will not be dead soon.

• 5:47Speaker 01

Well, history, look, whenever you look at trying to predict the future of tech, one of the most tried and true ways to do that is to look at the past. Did you guys know that? And did you guys know history repeats itself? Did you know that? Cause it kinda does.

• 6:03Andrew Manganelli?

If you if you really think about it.

• 6:06Speaker 01

If you really think about it. Uh, Apple's been trying to fill this place in their lineup in between the pro phone and the not pro phone for a little while. Not even in between. They just try to have another phone in the lineup.

• 6:16Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 6:17Speaker 01

And they had iPhone 12 mini, which everyone except one person on earth.

• 6:24David Imel?

One minion I got rid of.

• 6:26Speaker 01

Tried to use, but then eventually got rid of.

• 6:28David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 6:29Speaker 01

And then they had the 13 mini the next year, which fixed.

• 6:32David Imel?

  The battery.

• 6:32Speaker 01

The battery, and that was kind of it. And sales were too anemic for them to continue, and it was gone after two generations. Very quickly after, they followed it up with a Plus iPhone. The Plus iPhone also lasted two generations, and it was right above the base iPhone. It was just a bigger screen, but none of the other pro features. But it also died two generations in, just didn't sell quite enough. And so now here we are in 2025, and Apple's done this crazy, ultra-thin, future-of-the-iphone type of thing, very innovative. We all know it's kind of half of a foldable, but they did the iPhone Air. And it's, once again, very interesting phone, and many people were very excited about it.

• 7:12Speaker 01

But now here we are, and headlines are popping up that, uh, sales are a little bit lower than Apple's expected, and so they are cutting production to less than 10% of the original volume that they were forecasting they'd be producing at. That's a crazy number, 90% lower than what they thought they would be producing. Which, to me, when I read a headline like this, I, I went to business school for a couple of years, and I always had a professor that told me that if you give a number without context, I will fail you. That was his thing. He was like, if you tell me that sales are, you know, 10% or whatever, or the price of something is $100, if you don't tell me that the competition is actually $200, or it used to be $100, but now it's $50, like, if you don't give me some type of context, I will fail you.

• 7:57Speaker 01

And so I see this headline, and it's very spicy, 10% production of what they thought they would need. What were they expecting? And what is the, the, the actual number? Because when I see the curves of iPhone Air, if I am putting on my Tim Cook hat, and I'm a, I'm the logistics guy and the supply chain guy, I feel like iPhone Air would have a pretty big initial spike among enthusiasts willing to spend $1,000 on a futuristic iPhone, and then it would level off and lower over time. And something like the base iPhone would have a low initial spike, but then would have a longer tail as normal people who don't buy on day one find out about it and buy the, the new iPhone.

• 8:38Speaker 01

So if I have that, I'm doing my math thing now. If you have that high initial spike and then lower, and we're still in the first like month of the phone coming out, this expected spike up here and the actual amount could be dramatically different, but it could be the same shape, or it could be a different tail, or it could be, you know, a totally different expected curve. There's a lot of possibilities that could match this headline of 10% production versus what's expected. That was me rambling, all that to say, are you guys surprised? Yeah.

• 9:09Andrew Manganelli?

Just to go on that, it feels like with some other context, maybe that spike isn't that high because just in a, you know, if you're trying to preorder an iPhone right now, if you can preorder an iPhone Air.

• 9:23Speaker 01

Are you gonna wear this mask?

• 9:25David Imel?

Your voice is a little muffled.

• 9:26Andrew Manganelli?

  Is it muffled?

• 9:27Speaker 01

  A little bit.

• 9:28David Imel?

Yeah, put the, if you put it over. There you go.

• 9:31Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, that does sound better.

• 9:32Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:32Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay, um, sorry.

• 9:34Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:35Andrew Manganelli?

If you're pre, if you're preordering iPhones right now, you can get an iPhone Air shipped immediately. If you preorder any of the other iPhone 17 lineup, it's a two to three week wait time. So.

• 9:45Speaker 01

  Makes sense.

• 9:45Andrew Manganelli?

It feels like that spike isn't what, isn't a big spike off the top. And I, I mean, like, I know you said enthusiast potentially buying it, but it's really hard to have, think of enthusiast that would want to buy this over like what we're calling the most pro iPhone ever. If I, I picture an enthusiast enthusiast being like, that's what I'm getting. The Air is cool, but I'm getting the sweet.

• 10:09Speaker 01

So I think that's always true about the pro iPhone. You're always going to have a bigger spike at the beginning because that's what enthusiasts are going to get. The Air is interesting because it is more expensive than the base model, and it is worse than the base model. And so you have to be an enthusiast to decide to get that phone, to spend more money and get it because it's thinner and pretty and shiny and stuff.

• 10:29David Imel?

Well, you don't have to be enthusiast. You could just really like thin, pretty.

• 10:33Speaker 01

Well, I guess on day, on month one.

• 10:36David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 10:36Speaker 01

I expect the average person to be just getting the base iPhone and not really spending the extra. And if I'm an enthusiast, I'm getting probably the Pro, but also maybe the Air.

• 10:47David Imel?

And it's also the air is like, super overrepresented in my like Twitter timeline and on Instagram. And like, I feel like everyone who has the air, I know they have the air.

• 10:58Andrew Manganelli?

It sounds just like the Mini. Sorry, David. I can barely see you. I promise. But this is the, this is the Mini on Twitter. Everyone's like, no, this is the best thing ever in our space. We love the Mini. Long live the Mini.

• 11:11David Imel?

  That's true.

• 11:12Andrew Manganelli?

  Sounds exactly like it.

• 11:13David Imel?

This did, this, this quote of 10% did kind of blow my mind because anecdotally, I've been seeing a ton of iPhone airs. And usually I don't see the brand new tech thing everywhere all the time, even with the brand new iPhone. But I've been seeing a lot of iPhone airs. I've seen at least like seven or eight just in my neighborhood.

• 11:33Speaker 01

  So interesting.

• 11:34David Imel?

But I live in New York City.

• 11:36Speaker 01

  Do you think?

• 11:36David Imel?

So this is a place where people will buy the new expensive thing and also will buy the fashion thing.

• 11:42Speaker 01

Yeah. Do you think you're, so this is, this is like, again, like the human brain and like perception. Do you think you're noticing the air more, even though you're also seeing Pros and just not registering it?

• 11:53David Imel?

I see some Pros. That's a real possibility because I've just been wondering consistently. Yeah. I mean, you very much notice. So, yeah, it's a, it's a possibility, but it's just the fact that I'm seeing them at all within the first month of it coming out is kind of like surprising to me.

• 12:09Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 12:10Speaker 04

I mean, anecdotally, the people that I know that would be buying the Air in my head, all got the Pros and the Pro Max.

• 12:17Andrew Manganelli?

I've seen so many Pros because it's so easy to tell when it's sitting in like a car mount. You can see this bright orange, big camera plateau, like in your rearview mirror, you can just be like, that guy's one of the Pros.

• 12:29Speaker 02

Everyone I know that bought the Air is not an enthusiast. Like they bought it because they're like, ooh, pretty. And they universally love it. Like they're in love with their phone.

• 12:40Speaker 01

That is such a, it's the Mini.

• 12:42Andrew Manganelli?

It's a different type of enthusiast.

• 12:44David Imel?

Well, and if you think about it, so like, you know how the whole thing with electric cars is that, oh, you only need this much range, not that much range. Because, oh, you'll just charge in your, in your garage and then you'll just go to the grocery store and you'll go live in suburbia. Like, it's all those people that are buying the Air because the battery life is not that big of a deal to them. So they're just more interested in something that's flashy and thin.

• 13:07Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 13:07David Imel?

  You know?

• 13:07Speaker 01

  A finally actually new iPhone.

• 13:09David Imel?

  Right.

• 13:10Speaker 01

Yeah. Yeah, you know, in in supply chain land, like what you said, Andrew, like the iPhone Air is available and that means they have extra stock and the other iPhones are not available for maybe a couple of weeks, which means they don't have enough stock. In an ideal world, they're all available and have just barely enough stock for the exact correct amount of demand, which is why they make these forecasts and try to supply chain stock stores perfectly. And to me, they just slightly got the ratios off, or maybe more than slightly got the ratios off of what they expected.

• 13:42David Imel?

I do want to try to run this phone for a little bit. I just don't want to buy it. So I can't, I can't, I'm not willing to invest a thousand dollars just to like

• 13:50Speaker 04

  I've thought about that too.

• 13:51David Imel?

Yeah, yeah, it's not worth it.

• 13:54Speaker 01

It is pretty nice to hold.

• 13:55David Imel?

It is very nice to hold. Every time I pick someone's up, I'm like, hmm. But I, you know, you wonder how long, how long it's gonna last before it wears off.

• 14:02Andrew Manganelli?

Do you think the average person going into a store just picking up an iPhone that would potentially buy that would be worried about it breaking because of how thin it is? Do you think that's a concern? Someone who doesn't watch any of the testing, hasn't watched any of our reviews, they're just the typical.

• 14:17Speaker 04

Not if the salespeople are good.

• 14:20David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 14:21Speaker 04

You know, because I'm sure that's part of their training.

• 14:23David Imel?

  That's true.

• 14:24Speaker 04

Like when I used to work at Best Buy Mobile, we would get like paperwork and stuff and like how the talking points on all the phones and stuff, you know?

• 14:30Speaker 01

  That's so interesting.

• 14:30David Imel?

Yeah, Apple stores, I know they do a good job of that.

• 14:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 14:33David Imel?

And I bet carrier stores, Best Buys, things like that also are like very convincing. Oh, just get our insurance. Oh, just, you know, it'll be fine. It's durable.

• 14:41Andrew Manganelli?

It's definitely not gonna break and then upsell you on Apple immediately after.

• 14:45David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 14:46Speaker 01

  Yeah, it is titanium.

• 14:47David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 14:47Speaker 01

  Seems pretty strong.

• 14:48David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 14:49Speaker 01

All right, well, we'll keep an eye on it. We'll see if this thing actually changes in trajectory or if it's almost dead. We'll find out in two years.

• 14:57Speaker 01

All right. I also noticed, I was liking a YouTube video recently. It was by the Autofocus channel. It was on a new Porsche 911.

• 15:03Andrew Manganelli?

  You like your own videos?

• 15:04Speaker 01

I do. I should mention, I like every single one of our own uploaded videos.

• 15:08David Imel?

Do you vote for yourself in the school election too?

• 15:10Speaker 01

I never ran, but if I did, you better believe it. Absolutely.

• 15:14Speaker 04

Do you like your own tweets? That's the only thing that matters.

• 15:17Speaker 01

Oh, no, I don't. Cause that used to be a favorite button.

• 15:19David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 15:20Speaker 01

I adopted that as like, I would like to remember this tweet for later. So I don't like my own tweets. It was a favorite button. Anyway. Uh, I liked an autofocus channel button and I saw a small animation of a tire play. And I realized that YouTube has been giving us custom like button animations on various channels when it auto detects the type of channel that it is. I don't actually know if the waveform channel gets auto detected as a type of channel that gets a custom like button. I don't think it is. I think there should be a tech one also and there isn't.

• 15:48David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 15:49Speaker 01

But there's like beauty channels and car channels and all sorts of other things that get custom like button animations. And I thought that was pretty cool.

• 15:55David Imel?

There's like a ton of sports ones.

• 15:57Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. Do you want to go over the list? There's a tweet.

• 16:00Speaker 01

Yeah, there's a whole list. Okay.

• 16:01Speaker 04

Wait, can I ask a question first?

• 16:02Andrew Manganelli?

  I can't read it.

• 16:03Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 16:03Speaker 04

Is this based on the video or like the channel?

• 16:06Speaker 01

I think it's based on the channel.

• 16:07Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay.

• 16:08Speaker 01

But that I don't actually know if that's true.

• 16:10Andrew Manganelli?

I have a good way to test this after we, um, can you go through the list?

• 16:14Speaker 01

Yeah. Okay. So there's about 20. Motor vehicles get a car animation, learning, uh, gets an idea bulb animation. There's music for music videos, film, travel gets an airplane, a basketball, a football, a cricket ball, a soccer ball and a baseball.

• 16:30David Imel?

  Cooking.

• 16:31Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 16:31David Imel?

There's tennis. There's cat, which is, you know, honestly, yeah.

• 16:36Speaker 01

  Cat videos.

• 16:36David Imel?

Should have cat video comment. There's comedy. There is dog. There is horror, love, which I don't really know what that would mean. Romance, which is apparently separate from love.

• 16:46Speaker 01

  Weird.

• 16:47David Imel?

Uh, thriller, which is separate from horror and TV, which is separate from YouTube.

• 16:53Andrew Manganelli?

So with that, do you think that's channel or tag based?

• 16:57Speaker 01

I think it's the type of video.

• 16:58David Imel?

Yeah, I think it auto detects the type of video.

• 17:00Speaker 01

I would, I would say it's the type of.

• 17:01Andrew Manganelli?

Do you think it does that by tags or by?

• 17:03Speaker 01

  No.

• 17:04David Imel?

  I think it's AI.

• 17:05Speaker 01

Didn't they get rid of tags?

• 17:05David Imel?

I think if you say certain words or have certain title.

• 17:08Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 17:09David Imel?

Then it's like, yeah, this is a car video.

• 17:11Speaker 04

Yeah, I'm not getting this. Is this just on web?

• 17:14Speaker 01

Uh, this is on mobile. I got, I got it on mobile.

• 17:16Speaker 04

I'm not getting it on Android right now.

• 17:19Speaker 01

Oh, it's because it's on, yeah, it's on Android. Yeah. You know, Google's on platform. Yeah.

• 17:24Speaker 01

  iOS only, sorry, sorry.

• 17:25David Imel?

  Really?

• 17:26Speaker 01

  Coming, it's not on Android? I don't know, I don't know, I'm just making a joke.

• 17:28David Imel?

  Wait, let me check.

• 17:29Speaker 01

That just happens a lot. Google has released a lot of features that are iOS only until it comes to Android.

• 17:34Speaker 04

No, I got it on the autofocus video, so it is on Android.

• 17:37Speaker 01

  Okay, I was just kidding.

• 17:38Andrew Manganelli?

Wait, are there, there are still tags in videos, right? You can still tag a video?

• 17:43Speaker 01

  Yeah, okay.

• 17:43Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay, Adam, for this episode.

• 17:46Speaker 01

  Tag it horror.

• 17:46Andrew Manganelli?

Can you tag, can you tag every single one of these?

• 17:49Speaker 04

  Oh.

• 17:50Andrew Manganelli?

  And see what happens?

• 17:51Speaker 04

  Nothing would happen.

• 17:51Andrew Manganelli?

  No.

• 17:52Speaker 04

We gotta pick one, like, beauty.

• 17:53Speaker 02

You should tag horror over and over and over again. And then what we should do to test if it's the tags or the things, we just all have to say "car", a lot, "car", "car driving",

• 18:02Speaker 01

  "car",

• 18:02Speaker 02

  "car wheel",

• 18:03Speaker 01

  "drive",

• 18:04Speaker 02

  "tire",

• 18:04Speaker 01

  "drive",

• 18:05Speaker 02

  "car", "this car is good."

• 18:06Speaker 01

  Electric car, waveform podcast.

• 18:08David Imel?

  Car.

• 18:08Speaker 01

  Wave form podcast.

• 18:10David Imel?

Wave E V, electric vehicle form podcast.

• 18:12Speaker 01

I think it's AI that just like looks at a whole bunch of factors and picks the most likely one.

• 18:16Andrew Manganelli?

Well, we just need every one of you to press the like button to test it out and let us know.

• 18:21Speaker 01

Let us know if you get a certain animation on this video. That'd be sick. I wonder if the clip gets different animation from the main episode, I don't know.

• 18:29Speaker 04

What would it be, like a microphone exploding or something?

• 18:32Speaker 01

Well, there should be a podcast one, because it knows what a podcast is. That's the easiest one to detect.

• 18:35Speaker 04

We put it in a playlist called podcasts.

• 18:37Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 18:37Speaker 04

I don't know what more I could do for them.

• 18:39Speaker 01

That should be easy. A little microphone shows up, that'd be fire. Anyway, um, yeah, that's, that's new. You know what else is new?

• 18:47Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, God.

• 18:52Speaker 01

Okay, alright, where do I start with this? So yesterday, I'm on Twitter, and, you know, as I am, I open up the website, and I'm fed a whole bunch of random stuff. And one of them at the top was someone tweeting at me, "Hey, Marquez, you should check this out." And so I scroll up, and it's this tweet from a company called One X, and it's about a robot called Neo. And it's this like 10-minute keynote video announcing a new humanoid robot that's available now. Quote. I said, "Oh, wow, available now." Quote-unquote. "You can order this thing." And so I click on it, and I watch the whole video, and I kind of instantly understand that this is not real,

• 19:37Speaker 01

but I, I close the video and I go home. The next morning, this morning, I wake up and I come in and this video has 15,000 retweets, 26 million views and many more people tweeting it at me, asking if I'm gonna review it and check it out and how excited I am that this is finally real. And so now I do feel the need to at least share some of my thoughts on it. And it's hard to know where to start because I have several opinions that I know are all over the map and also some of them are controversial.

• 20:11David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 20:11Speaker 01

  So where do I start?

• 20:12David Imel?

Do we want to kind of like talk about what it is first?

• 20:15Speaker 01

Yeah, let's describe what it is.

• 20:16Andrew Manganelli?

  You ordered it, right?

• 20:19Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 20:19Speaker 02

  Please, please tell me.

• 20:21Speaker 01

Okay, so this robot, it's a 5'6", 66-pound humanoid robot. Comes in three colors.

• 20:26David Imel?

  It's pretty light.

• 20:26Speaker 01

Uh, yeah, it's pretty light. Comes in like this light cream color or like a light blue or a black color. And it's humanoid shaped. So imagine it's like kind of fabric-covered from head to toe. It has a pair of eyes on the front, which are camera sensors. It has ears on the sides, which are microphones. It has little lights where the ears would be.

• 20:43Andrew Manganelli?

  It's like a walking mannequin.

• 20:44Speaker 01

It's like a, yeah, it looks exactly like a walking mannequin. And the video shows it walking around in a kind of natural-ish type of way and doing chores all over the house all day. So it waters your plants, it vacuums the floor, it takes the laundry out, it folds it, it puts stuff away, it does the dishes, it cleans the toilet. It just lives at home doing your chores and then when it's done, after the four-hour battery life is up, it walks back over to the charger, plugs itself in, and docks. That is a very cool idea. Like, people have been, I mean, what's the Jetsons robot called? Like, people have been having this idea for forever.

• 21:24David Imel?

  Rudy, Rosie.

• 21:24Speaker 01

Rosie, Rosie the Jetsons robot. Like, this is an idea humans have loved, the idea of a humanoid robot helper for forever. And now with the advent of AI and with all these sensors and all this investment in the category, it feels like it may be more real than ever. Like Tesla's doing this thing and Boston Dynamics has had these humanoid-shaped robots and like, maybe we're actually finally gonna have this thing. So people watch this video and believe that it is now finally here.

• 21:51Speaker 01

That being said, I also watched a Joanna Stern video. She has been with The Wall Street Journal for a little bit and she got a demo in person of this robot. So they brought it to her and it did a whole bunch of this stuff. She asked it to-

• 22:06Andrew Manganelli?

Wait, she went to a demo area, right?

• 22:08Speaker 01

Right. So she went to a demo area, a little house that they set up, but in person, she got to witness the robot helping her. So it would take a glass and bring it to her with water in it, or it would, I think, load the dishwasher or something like that. Couple tasks that it would do.

• 22:24Speaker 01

100% of the things that were happening in her demo time were teleoperated. It was operated by a guy in another room with a VR headset and controllers. 100% of what was happening. So, we watch the video again, you kind of have to assume that some of what's happening in this keynote video is also teleoperated. There are two specific clips where they say, whoops, that it is autonomous. One of them is when the doorbell rings and they ask it to go get the door. And so it autonomously walks over to the door, waits for the person, sees the person, opens the door, backs up and lets them inside. And the other is, "Take this water glass that is now empty from me."

• 23:09Speaker 01

And the robot walks over, takes it out of his hand and walks away. Those are the two clips labeled as autonomous in this video. All of the rest, I assume, are teleoperated. So, where does that leave me? You could, if you wanted to, preorder this robot. It's $500 a month, or $20,000 for outright ownership and priority delivery. That sounds crazy on the surface, but I actually think that's a justifiable price for, especially the type of person who's gonna buy this, who sees this as just buying saved time. Not a ridiculous price. I have no problem with the price. The problem is, it's a $200 preorder and they say they'll maybe ship it next year. And I don't believe that they will.

• 23:54Andrew Manganelli?

  Hold on, real quick.

• 23:55Speaker 04

Where have we heard this before?

• 23:56Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. Can I just clarify really quick? When you say justifiable price, do you mean justifiable price of everything working correctly? Or justifiable price of this like, there's a good chance a lot of this is teleoperated and we're using you. Cause like, he claims a lot of like, it's not going to be that great off the start.

• 24:14Speaker 01

  Yeah, great question.

• 24:14Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay.

• 24:15Speaker 01

They're selling the dream. And I think that the dream is worth the price. Right. I think that the fully working, fully autonomous robot, where you leave home in the morning and you come back at night and everything is done and cleaned up for you every day and you never have to empty a dishwasher or do laundry ever again. That dream is awesome. And I think a lot of people are buying that dream. And I have no problem with the price of that dream. The problem I have is the thing that they're selling is far from that product. And, you know, I don't know exactly in this video, how much of this stuff is teleoperated? I'm assuming most of it is. But it's like, I can give some leeway on it being a little slow

• 25:00Speaker 01

or a little clumsy. It's a first gen product. This is going to happen. But if you're an early adopter, you want it to at least work. And I think what they're saying and what Joanna found out from talking to the founder and people at the company is that they're not expecting all of these tasks to be autonomous, even from the beginning. They're expecting some of the stuff to get stuck sometimes and to have a couple of issues. And then someone who works for the company will remote in and teleoperate the robot and peer into your house and fix it for you. And early adopters are going to have to be okay with that.

• 25:34David Imel?

Yeah, effectively, they're saying, it's very confusing. In the video where he's talking to Joanna, he's like, it'll do most things autonomously when he ship it to you. But also, we need to build a world model. So the idea is they want to build this world model, quote unquote, which is effectively being able to.

• 25:49Speaker 01

  General AI.

• 25:50David Imel?

Yeah, being able to train the robot to see objects, understand what they are, understand what it's doing, you know, unload your dishwasher, do this stuff. But they don't have enough training data. So what they're trying to do right now is they're trying to get these into a lot of people.

• 26:03Speaker 01

Houses because of course they've got some lab in the dog patch in San Francisco or something. Right. And they're just, they have a few robots that are going around. They're like, okay, we, we are manually training on dishwashers. Now we're mainly training on this, but in order for these models to be built well, you need like millions of parameters, like millions of videos. And they can't produce millions of videos fast enough. So what do they do? Oh, we'll sell a robot that is in way more people's homes and will create the training data in people's homes, which.

• 26:34Andrew Manganelli?

  So you're beta tester.

• 26:35Speaker 01

So you're selling a product for $20,000 that doesn't do the thing so that other people can build your product for you. So that eventually you'll be able to sell it to people that it can actually do the thing.

• 26:45Andrew Manganelli?

And even it's like on the hope that it can eventually do that because they don't have all the parameters in there. It's this like, don't worry, it'll work once we get all of this, but you guys need to spend $20,000 and.

• 26:55Speaker 01

Yeah, this is, this is the, the AI product problem. This is the, it's been happening before. This is what happened to the humane pin. This is what happened to the rabbit, which is the promise of it working someday in the future is dependent on getting all of the data and all of the systems to, to work eventually. This is the self-driving car problem too. We can't sell you a perfect self-driving car until we have millions of miles of data. Of the thing being trained and working so that we have a perfect system to self-drive. How do we get those millions of miles? We let people beta test it for us and put it in their own hands and hopefully it's safe enough that we can get millions and millions of miles. And then we have a.

• 27:37David Imel?

Right. But at least the benefit of Tesla that, that they had was that they had a thing that people already used every day that was already a good product.

• 27:44Speaker 01

And they had videos of rotes.

• 27:46David Imel?

And it was always recording video that to be used in the training data.

• 27:50Speaker 02

Well, Neo has this too, because one of the things they advertise on their website is something called expert mode. Where if you ask Neo to do a task that it has not yet autonomously figured out, you can schedule a time where a quote unquote Neo expert will tele-operate. The, the robot, do the task and supposedly contribute.

• 28:11Speaker 04

  To this training.

• 28:12David Imel?

I'm gonna schedule a time for an expert to come take the glass out of my hand.

• 28:16Speaker 04

Not just that, but that opens up a whole world of like, okay, so you're streaming video footage from inside your house to somewhere.

• 28:23Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 28:23Andrew Manganelli?

There's a few things. He felt like he was kind of making some stuff up when Joanna would ask. He's like, oh, we could blur faces or just geolock areas inside of your house, which is like, I guess you could. And but I think what to go on what David was saying is Tesla cars were at least cars and like operated as cars collecting data.

• 28:41David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 28:42Andrew Manganelli?

This is a robot that literally can't do anything. I guess, except being scheduled to teleoperate, but that's just not a good product unless it has all this training data.

• 28:51David Imel?

Yeah, if this was like a good vacuum cleaner that you used, and then at one point it was like, by the way, we have, you've used it enough now that it knows what your house looks like. So now it can clean for you.

• 29:01Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 29:01David Imel?

  That's different than.

• 29:03Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 29:03David Imel?

Put a robot in your home with cameras that someone has to operate.

• 29:06Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 29:07David Imel?

And I will give them credit that like they control it with some Oculus Quest controller, basically in a headset.

• 29:12Andrew Manganelli?

  It's cool.

• 29:13David Imel?

And it did have some pretty real time like movement and they have some interesting things and when the robot like they pull threads inside of the robot to do the tendons, which is what allows it to be light so that it doesn't like fall on your dog and kill it.

• 29:26Speaker 01

  66 pounds.

• 29:27David Imel?

Yeah, 66 pounds is quite light, but that also means that it can't apply a lot of force. So Joanna in the video tried to get it to crack a, what kind of nut?

• 29:36Andrew Manganelli?

  A walnut.

• 29:36David Imel?

A walnut. And it would not crack it.

• 29:38Andrew Manganelli?

I think that's fair because like I can't crack a walnut with my hand. So.

• 29:41David Imel?

Yeah, but I mean, it can't apply that much pressure.

• 29:44Speaker 04

I'm glad it can't apply that much pressure.

• 29:45David Imel?

That is also true. Yeah. That's true. You don't want it to strangle you.

• 29:48Speaker 04

There's a whole movie about this and I'm, I'm begging.

• 29:52Speaker 01

  Wait, which movie are you?

• 29:53David Imel?

  I, Robot.

• 29:54Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 29:54David Imel?

  Cause I, Robot, there's also X Machina.

• 29:56Speaker 04

Oh, yeah, yeah. But I am once again begging people to finish the movies.

• 30:02Andrew Manganelli?

  It like.

• 30:03David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 30:04Andrew Manganelli?

It, it was impressive how it all works with the tendons and stuff, but then you watch any of the teleoperated stuff it does in Joanna's video, which you should definitely go watch. And I couldn't help but just thinking like, this is how Lane stumbles around the house, trying to learn how to do new things.

• 30:18Speaker 01

She's learning her neural net the same way.

• 30:19David Imel?

  Yeah, I mean, yeah.

• 30:20Andrew Manganelli?

  The thing it opens.

• 30:23Andrew Manganelli?

It opened the refrigerator and immediately hits itself in the face and then has to like walk out. It tries to load the dishwasher. I think it took five minutes to put in two cups and a fork. And the way it's I but the way it squatted down to get the dishwasher door is just like it's not even close to being what a human would do to do these things.

• 30:45David Imel?

I worry less about the speed that it can do tasks because if it's like doing it autonomously then you know it's sort of like yeah it's like if I if it takes me two minutes to render a video or or or an hour to render a video but it's not due till next week.

• 30:59Andrew Manganelli?

  Agreed.

• 30:59David Imel?

  I don't really care.

• 31:00Speaker 01

My analogy is if you had remember that analogy we had of like a crank computer it's like if you could crank computer render a video like this in 15 minutes or if you could just have it do it automatically in an hour I would take the hour even though it's slower I just don't want to have to spend that time.

• 31:16Andrew Manganelli?

I think it was less about the time and more about just like how clearly it wasn't operating and how a human would operate to do any of those things despite being controlled by a human in all those scenarios. So now we're expecting next year for it to autonomously learn how to react more like a human and do all of those things when right now in presumably a year within this launching an actual human who knows how to do those things can't even control it correctly.

• 31:41David Imel?

  That's a fair point.

• 31:42Andrew Manganelli?

That seems just not even remotely close.

• 31:44Speaker 02

I have you guys looked at the FAQ yet?

• 31:47Andrew Manganelli?

  No, I cannot imagine.

• 31:48Speaker 02

So Andrew like going off your point of like how clumsy this thing tends to look one of the things in the FAQ is like can Neo cook for me to which they're like it's not going to be allowed to use your stove which is like cool that's good that's safe and then they're like but Neo can help you clean up which implies doing the dishes they don't say do the dishes.

• 32:06David Imel?

There's a video of it doing dishes.

• 32:07Speaker 02

The next two FAQ points are like do not get this thing wet.

• 32:12Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh really?

• 32:13Speaker 02

Its hands are waterproof but it says the rest of the unit is not and then the there's an FAQ that says can Neo be used outside and it just says contact with moisture may damage it.

• 32:26Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh my gosh.

• 32:27David Imel?

Which is funny because there's a video of it outside watering plants.

• 32:30Speaker 02

I just want to add I just want to add love the idea that it could clean my toilet you know no one no one likes actually some people like cleaning their toilets there's like a whole TikTok thing but. Is that knit washable? Like, I don't want it to clean my toilet if it just has if it just has poop and pee on it forever. And I can't find that information anywhere.

• 32:50Speaker 01

  Interesting.

• 32:53Andrew Manganelli?

It also, she asked it, Joanna was asking the CEO some questions and right after showing that it does dishes, he was like, oh, can't pick up sharp objects. So it's like, okay, I can do all my dishes except for knives and pointy forks.

• 33:05Speaker 02

Yeah, I'm cool with that, though. I don't want.

• 33:07Andrew Manganelli?

I don't want it doing that, but that's not doing the dishes. If 10% of the dishes you can't do because now they're pointy.

• 33:14Speaker 01

Doing the dishes is like a very delicate, like you drop one dish and you messed up.

• 33:19Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 33:20Speaker 01

  Big time.

• 33:21Speaker 02

And then there's pointy objects everywhere.

• 33:22Andrew Manganelli?

And do you think that thing could clean off the floor? Yeah. I don't think that's cleaning glass up off the floor.

• 33:27Speaker 01

I'm just imagining, you know how we have a, okay, we've had, we've had two different types of robots here at the studio. We've had a robot vacuum cleaner.

• 33:34Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 33:34Speaker 01

Which we came back to in the morning and found it like wrapped in cables, like dying in the corner.

• 33:40Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 33:41Speaker 01

And then we've had Astro Bot.

• 33:42Speaker 02

  Oh, God.

• 33:43Speaker 01

It's just. Which is like a little bit more capable. It doesn't vacuum, but it can like bring you a drink if someone is in the other room. Take a hand at a drink first and like, it has a little security camera and it can rove around and be a helper and has an Alexa and answers questions. Even that was like, it would still wrap a cord around its neck and like dive under a desk for no reason. So, uh, not a whole lot of, um, not a whole lot of success so far in this category. So jumping all the way to, I think basically my thesis is jumping all the way from where we are now, which is this is not real and it's 100% teleoperated, jumping all the way to this is a good product and it's mostly teleoperated and it actually saves you time is a huge gap.

• 34:29Speaker 01

So why did you announce it now instead of when it's done? And the answer is both because we need to generate hype and raise a lot of money and because we need a lot of training data. And that is the AI product problem of 2025 and beyond. Like, that's what happened to Rabbit. That's what happened to the humane pin. That's what happened to so many of these others, which is the product is not done. They had a dream and a really good idea and a respectable idea and on people working really hard on it. But they just didn't have the tech that was good enough to sell it as is.

• 34:59David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 34:59Speaker 01

And so they sold us a horrible product that was not yet done. And that was their demise.

• 35:03David Imel?

My question is like, how much, how much funding do they have? Because instead of selling this for $20,000 or $500 a month, when it doesn't really know how to do a lot of stuff yet.

• 35:12Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 35:13David Imel?

They should be offering to let people test it for them. Or like getting or paying other people to test it for them, you know?

• 35:21Speaker 01

Cause they get enough people? I don't know.

• 35:23David Imel?

I think they would. I think the entirety of Twitter would definitely sign up for this.

• 35:30Speaker 01

  20 million views.

• 35:31Speaker 02

I, I think we should say something nice.

• 35:33David Imel?

  It looks soft.

• 35:34Speaker 02

It, uh, I think their marketing materials are really well done.

• 35:37David Imel?

I just want to, I feel like the browser company kind of like introduced this like super soft, nice marketing style.

• 35:45Speaker 01

  Everything's cream colored.

• 35:46Speaker 02

But there's also a lot like the photos have like a nice sort of high contrast graininess.

• 35:50David Imel?

Yeah, and even their like launch video was like a super eight video going through San Francisco. Like, that's exactly what the browser.

• 35:56Speaker 02

And I like that there's old people in the materials. I'll say something kind of nice. People are not going to buy this.

• 36:01David Imel?

  No.

• 36:02Speaker 02

  No.

• 36:02David Imel?

  It kind of makes sense.

• 36:03Speaker 01

  Buy it for their parents.

• 36:04Andrew Manganelli?

I feel like as a, this kind of humanoid robot might make the most sense for people who have a hard time getting around their house. It might need some help.

• 36:12Speaker 02

Yeah, but come on, have you ever met an old person?

• 36:14David Imel?

  No.

• 36:15Speaker 02

Like, I, I, you know, helping old people. My, my parents are weirdly good at tech. I don't help them with tech that much, but I feel like, you know, old people, you know, struggle to find the email app on the iPhone. Like, I don't want to give them something that is completely LLM operated.

• 36:30Speaker 01

Yeah, I don't, the, the current as exists version of this product could be terrible for old people. But the someday, the dream is complete version of this product might be awesome for old people.

• 36:41Andrew Manganelli?

  For sure.

• 36:42Speaker 02

I feel like there's a lot of AI companies that sort of have this really weird posture where they're like, ha, ha, ha. Wouldn't it be funny if it killed you? Whereas the one X is sort of like, it can't, it won't, it's soft sweater, six, five, six. It's, you're good. No sharp.

• 36:57Speaker 01

They're not making a six two.

• 36:59Speaker 02

Yeah, it can't, it can't cook.

• 37:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 37:01Andrew Manganelli?

I'll say he did a decent job of admitting some of the, what'd you say, admitting the faults and then sell it at the same time. But he's, he mentioned shortcomings of it and how next year, the people who get it are going to be purchasing something that is not fully fledged and has a lot to learn. I just think even that level of what he's saying is still so far from

• 37:22Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 37:22Andrew Manganelli?

  most likely what's gonna.

• 37:23David Imel?

Well, it goes to Marques's point, like this is technically a cool thing, like even being tele operated, like that's still pretty impressive for a small startup to do. It's just not what they're selling right now. So, yeah.

• 37:35Speaker 02

I think we were nice enough that now no one could be mad when they lose all their money on their investments.

• 37:40Andrew Manganelli?

I just can't wait until they're like, oh, did you see they talked about Neo on the waveform podcast and they turned it on and there's a skeleton and a minion ripping on, and a fisherman ripping on us.

• 37:52Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 37:52Andrew Manganelli?

Their robot and they won't take any of this seriously.

• 37:54Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 37:55Andrew Manganelli?

  Which is fair.

• 37:56Speaker 01

I'm looking at the viewfinder now and it just looks like a skeleton.

• 37:58Andrew Manganelli?

Do you know how hard it is to just look at Ellis with those eyes the entire podcast?

• 38:04Speaker 02

  I completely forgot we were.

• 38:07Speaker 02

I was like, this is just a regular podcast. I actually wear this most days when we're not doing the podcast.

• 38:11Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 38:11David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 38:12Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 38:13David Imel?

Last year when we did our Halloween episode, I was cutting the clips the week after and I was like, this is no longer relevant.

• 38:20Speaker 02

  What's gonna happen with this?

• 38:22Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 38:22Andrew Manganelli?

People, you know, it'll be Halloween week. I, it'll, yeah.

• 38:26Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 38:26Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 38:27Speaker 01

These clips will be viewed long after Halloween.

• 38:29David Imel?

Yeah, maybe next year they'll pop off.

• 38:31Speaker 02

You know what else costs $500 a month?

• 38:37Speaker 01

  Damn.

• 38:37Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah, that's a good one.

• 38:38David Imel?

Yeah. Okay. Well, Adobe Max happened this week. Last year I went and then took a red eye Tuesday night because it starts on a Tuesday to come back here. I decided that's a bad idea because I don't like doing that anymore. So I didn't do it. Yeah, I don't like having red eyes like bunnies. I like having regular eyes.

• 38:55Andrew Manganelli?

  That's a.

• 38:55David Imel?

  Hazel eyes.

• 38:56Andrew Manganelli?

I'm glad you did that because we got all the same information from the internet.

• 39:00David Imel?

  What?

• 39:01Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 39:01Andrew Manganelli?

  About Adobe.

• 39:02David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 39:02Andrew Manganelli?

  I need to do that.

• 39:03David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 39:03Andrew Manganelli?

  I'm glad.

• 39:04David Imel?

Yeah, so they had Max is their annual developer conf. It's not really, it's a development conference. They kind of show what they did and then they teach you how to use it, I guess. Um, it's sort of for creatives. They weirdly did not really seemed to, at least on the first day, ship or talk about a lot of new, new, new Premiere or After Effects features. They actually had pretty big Premiere and After Effects updates like a couple of weeks ago. So I'm not really sure if that was supposed to be like not as big of a deal. They do have generative select now in Premiere. Anyway, I'm just gonna go over Photoshop and Lightroom because that's what I use the most often and there are some interesting features here.

• 39:45Speaker 01

  I like Lightroom.

• 39:46David Imel?

You like Lightroom? You use Lightroom?

• 39:47Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 39:48David Imel?

  Alright, we'll do Lightroom first.

• 39:49Speaker 01

  Eee.

• 39:50David Imel?

So Lightroom, uh, which is a photo editing app, now has an assisted culling feature, which if you don't, do you know, do you guys know what culling is?

• 39:57Speaker 02

  Nope.

• 39:57Speaker 01

  I don't think I do, no.

• 39:58David Imel?

  Okay.

• 39:58Speaker 02

It's when you got sick sheep and you gotta do something about it.

• 40:01David Imel?

Not too different, actually. Um, lambs, no kidding.

• 40:07David Imel?

So if you're, if you're like a working photographer and you shoot burst mode, which is, you know, I'm happy for you, I would never do it myself, I don't wanna deal with that many photos. If you're like a wedding photographer and you're just going

• 40:22Speaker 01

  As they do.

• 40:22David Imel?

  As they do.

• 40:23Speaker 01

  Those 1DXs.

• 40:24David Imel?

Yeah. When you go home and you have to like decide which is the best photo, that's really, really, really annoying, right? Because a lot of those photos, people are gonna be blinking, people are gonna be doing this and having to go like ding, ding, ding through every picture is very annoying. So with image recognition, you can now understand, oh, this person is blinking, this photo is overexposed. So if you import a ton of pictures, they have all of these different selection modes where you can select, okay, make sure people are smiling, make sure people are not blinking, uh, organize the photos that are overexposed versus properly exposed and it'll kind of contextual understand that. So that's very useful and you can like tag things as selects and rejects and then it'll separate them into separate areas.

• 41:08David Imel?

That's sort of a quality of life, really useful, but it is still using the image recognition and semantic recognition that we've developed recently.

• 41:16Andrew Manganelli?

  It's best shot.

• 41:18David Imel?

  It is basically best take.

• 41:19Andrew Manganelli?

  That's kind of awesome, honestly.

• 41:21David Imel?

Yeah. There's a color variant slider now, so for example, in your skin tones on your face, you have many different tones. And sometimes, if you just up the contrast on a photo, it also ups the contrast on the colors in your face. So you'll have like reds and greens and, you know, yellows in your face.

• 41:41Speaker 01

  Shadows.

• 41:41David Imel?

And shadows. And if you up the contrast, it's gonna make those go away. They now have a slider that allows you to basically lower the contrast on between certain colors, or heighten the contrast between certain colors of certain areas, so that you can more easily sort of get rid of those different color variations and make it all similar. So that's cool. They have automatic dust and sensor smudge removal. So if your camera sensor or lens has dust or like marks on it, it will automatically understand that when you import the photos and it will suggest that you content to where fill them away. So that's very cool.

• 42:22David Imel?

I really wish that they did this with film dust, because I have thousands of little dust particles on my phone that's really freaking annoying, but we are a very small market, so they will not care about me.

• 42:34Speaker 01

  There's dozens of us.

• 42:35David Imel?

There are dozens. There are dozens. You can now batch rename files, which apparently they did not have before, which is very useful. And then also, something that's kinda cool, you can auto-select objects, and it will automatically recognize if that object created a reflection or a shadow, and it will also select that part of it.

• 42:55Speaker 01

  That's good.

• 42:56David Imel?

Yeah, so if you're like, if you're trying to fill something out, like they gave an example of a lighthouse, that they selected the lighthouse, but then the person hadn't realized, "Oh, the lighthouse is casting a reflection in the water." So if you just select the lighthouse, it'll spin this little wheel for a sec, and it'll select the lighthouse and the reflection in the water, and then when you do remove, generative remove or something, it'll also get rid of the reflection.

• 43:18Speaker 01

  That's cool.

• 43:19David Imel?

That's very helpful. So that's Lightroom. Photoshop was quite interesting. They now allow you to use different generative models for their generative fill. So instead of just using the Adobe Firefly models, they now accept Nano Banana, which is Google's Gemini image recognition model.

• 43:39Andrew Manganelli?

  That sounds like something else.

• 43:40David Imel?

  We never.

• 43:41Andrew Manganelli?

  As a minion.

• 43:41Speaker 02

I thought Nano Banana was Gemini's Sora. I thought it was a video generation.

• 43:45David Imel?

No, no, no, no. It's an image generation model. And it's something that I'm surprised we actually never talked about because it did blow up for quite a while.

• 43:52Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, but it's not that good.

• 43:53David Imel?

Well, the good things about it is that it's really good at keeping character consistency. So if you need to generate multiple images of the same person, they would continuously look the same. And so that we're entering this weird phase because remember when ChatGPT and remember when Gemini had like a model dropdown window? And and it had like a zillion options and you're like, what is the difference between?

• 44:19Speaker 01

  Why do I need flash?

• 44:20David Imel?

Flash. So they're doing that right now. I assume they will eventually just have an auto select the model that you need feature. But for example, you know, Nano Banana has the character consistency thing. So if you want to, you know, turn the angle. Say, say you have a person facing forward and you're like, oh, I actually want the camera to be looking down on them. You can use that model and you can say, make it looking down from a 45 degree angle. It'll be looking down at them and they'll be looking up at you. So it like maintains the way that the person looks. Pretty interesting. It's kind of like a virtual camera feature.

• 44:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 44:52David Imel?

Yeah, which is, I don't know, kind of weird. And then there's, you know, other models that are good at different other things. Select subject and remove background have gotten much better on device because they used to be only good in the cloud. The remove tool has gotten significantly better. There's a new generative upscale feature, which gives more partner model options. So topaz.

• 45:15David Imel?

Upscale AI is now an option within Photoshop. So it's very interesting. So it can like, you can take a low res image and it will upscale it the way same way that topas has always done. Yeah, I was gonna say, I know I never use these upscaling features because all of the source images I usually have are high res. But I guess for older images, maybe it's better. Like I, I use the topas ones a lot and they're really good if you set them at like 10 to 30%. Like if you, if you hit this slam upscale, make this a million pixels, it will look goopy. Goopy, yeah. But at 10 to 30%, it can do some pretty gnarly stuff. Yeah. And then I think that one of the biggest features is harmonize, which did come out last year in the beta.

• 45:53David Imel?

But harmonize is basically you can take any PNG, you can drop it into any image and you can hit harmonize and it will naturally make all of the lighting and the color of the, the thing that you dropped into the image. Just look like it's realistically part of that image. Oh, so Photoshop skills. Yeah, but like. Like being good at Photoshop, but it just does automatically now. Yeah, out of Photoshop. Nice. So. I like that. Those are sort of the main things. Um, I definitely probably missed a few things because I went to watch the keynote and it was like five hours long. Wow. And at least last night when I was writing this, it was not yet on YouTube. And there was no playback speed option and there was no chapters. Woof. So I did not watch that and I just watched this morning, a bunch of recap videos. So. That's the way to do it. Yeah.

• 46:38David Imel?

So even AI could help there. Yeah. Um, but speaking of AI, well, we should just rename this to Wave AI form or something. We talked brief, I don't even know if we talked about this, but basically, um, Miko is this new assistant for Copilot, for Microsoft's Copilot assistant. And effectively Copilot, you, you've heard of that. It's like Microsoft's sort of AI that's always in Windows and it's just always there. They have now made these 3D characters that are personifying the AI.

• 47:13David Imel?

And you know, a couple of weeks ago, they dropped it's sort of like, it looks like a Luma from Super Mario Galaxy, sort of.

• 47:20Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 47:20David Imel?

And it's kind of just floating there and it talks to you and it's cute, but if you tap it a bunch of times, it turns into Clippy.

• 47:25Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 47:26David Imel?

And we had mentioned this on the podcast. Almost.

• 47:29Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, sorry. I mean, like, we almost got what we wanted on the podcast. Like, a couple of weeks ago, we were talking about Windows 10 going away and then we were just saying

• 47:37David Imel?

  Right.

• 47:37Andrew Manganelli?

Something about AI being like, we just need Clippy back in Copilot.

• 47:41David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 47:41Andrew Manganelli?

And then I got tagged a bunch of times when this happened.

• 47:44David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 47:44Andrew Manganelli?

It's not quite, it's, it's close. We get a brief, we get a brief Clippy. I think just like.

• 47:51David Imel?

Is it, so it's not persistent? He just.

• 47:53Andrew Manganelli?

No, he just, it says it just poofs into Clippy as an Easter egg.

• 47:56David Imel?

  And then it disappears?

• 47:57Andrew Manganelli?

  I think so.

• 47:58David Imel?

  Are you kidding me?

• 47:58Andrew Manganelli?

Exactly. That's, I don't need this flubber ass green thing. I need Clippy. And I mean, I can understand if you want Miko, right? To be the new thing, like, let that be the default. But if you already programmed Clippy into it, give us a Clippy option. Nostalgia sells, Microsoft.

• 48:15David Imel?

  It's true.

• 48:15Andrew Manganelli?

Microsoft, you, you should know better than anyone nostalgia sells. You're selling all these shirts with like MS Paint logos on it, like, just let Clippy be an option.

• 48:24David Imel?

Yeah. I'd pay $500 a month for Clippy.

• 48:27Andrew Manganelli?

Okay, well, not all of us would, but.

• 48:31David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 48:31Speaker 01

But with it, do your dishes.

• 48:33David Imel?

Yeah, do your dishes. So, speaking of trivia.

• 48:38Andrew Manganelli?

  There was like.

• 48:40Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh.

• 48:41David Imel?

  Oh, spooky trivia.

• 48:46Speaker 02

Guys, before we get into trivia, I just want to drop one little news story that I don't know much about, but I just want to make everyone aware.

• 48:53Speaker 02

My, I don't know if it's Halloween spookiness, my monitor is flickering like crazy right now.

• 48:58Andrew Manganelli?

It's definitely not the giant minion glasses.

• 49:02Speaker 02

I did take off these glasses to see, like, anyway. Those of you who are interested in graphic design, for some reason right now, the affinity suite of iPad apps is free. $0. Who knows if that, I think this is going to end soon, maybe before this podcast comes out, but it has something to do with Canva making some big announcement through, I don't know, just, but if you want to check out some cool apps that are now free, for now, as of right now, today, Wednesday. Anyway, guys, trivia, thin phones are in.

• 49:37Speaker 02

The news, right? But thin phones themselves are not new. Released in late 2014, what phone had a total depth of just 4.8 millimeters?

• 49:52Andrew Manganelli?

  What year?

• 49:53Speaker 02

Late 2014, specifically December 2014. So almost 2015.

• 49:59Speaker 01

  4.8 millimeters.

• 50:00Speaker 02

4.8 millimeters. I believe that's thinner than the edge and the air.

• 50:05Speaker 01

  It is.

• 50:05Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 50:06Speaker 01

Okay. God, I know. What a spooky question. I, I did, I had, I researched this because I wrote about it for my air video and I didn't name drop it, which I maybe should have. Well, watch. Nothing is obvious. All right. Well, answers will be at the end like usual. We'll be right back.

• 53:08Speaker 04

Welcome back. We are going to start this segment by asking our resident minion, Ellis, what is your battery life?

• 53:15Speaker 02

  Oh, a little bit.

• 53:17David Imel?

  Can we use that?

• 53:18Speaker 02

So today was a little extra because my train was not running this morning. It took me two hours to get to work. Woo! So a little extra usage on the Purple 12 Mini today. Who wants to take a little crack? Came off the charger a little early today, too. I was up bright and early, I think. Came off the charger at 7:45 a.m. It is currently 12:15. I don't know how to do math, so you guys can figure that one out. There's a 30 in there.

• 53:46Andrew Manganelli?

  Four and a half hours.

• 53:48David Imel?

  52%.

• 53:49Speaker 02

  52%?

• 53:50Andrew Manganelli?

I literally was gonna say 52%.

• 53:52Speaker 02

  52%, 52%?

• 53:53David Imel?

  I was thinking 63.

• 53:55Speaker 02

  63%?

• 53:58Speaker 02

I'm currently at 56% giving, I think that would make David and Andrew a little closer.

• 54:05David Imel?

  What'd you say, Andrew?

• 54:06Andrew Manganelli?

I was going to say that, but there's no way I can prove that, so David wins.

• 54:10David Imel?

Oh. Well, it's not like it was a trivia point, even though I wish it was.

• 54:15Speaker 02

  But you know what's not?

• 54:18Speaker 02

  56%?

• 54:20Speaker 02

The winning percentage of the Philadelphia 76ers, because it is at 100%.

• 54:25Andrew Manganelli?

Unbelievable. Have the Spurs lost yet?

• 54:27Speaker 02

No, neither have the Thunder. Anyway, but this isn't a basketball podcast. This is a Nothing 3A Lite podcast. Hit it.

• 54:37David Imel?

Yeah, we gotta talk about this. Um, the bu- okay. Nothing, when it came out, was a budget brand.

• 54:47David Imel?

And then they made the A series, which was their budget model for the budget brand. And I remember us joking around about how they made a budget line for the budget brand. And then they made a budget company that was a sub-brand that was budgeter.

• 55:03Andrew Manganelli?

  CMF.

• 55:04David Imel?

  CMF.

• 55:05Speaker 04

  Two budget, two furious.

• 55:06David Imel?

Two budget, two furious. And then now they have the Nothing 3A Lite, which is the budget of the, it's the budget phone.

• 55:17Andrew Manganelli?

  Budget version of the budget.

• 55:19David Imel?

Budget, the budget version of the budget line of the budget company.

• 55:26Speaker 02

Of the, of the pro, pro version of the budget company.

• 55:29David Imel?

  But not the budget sub-brand.

• 55:32Andrew Manganelli?

That makes sense. Why are you confused?

• 55:33Speaker 01

Somebody needs to do a hierarchy of all these phones, because I could see, it's very clear in my head, how the Nothing Phone 3 could be above the Nothing Phone 3A. And the Nothing Phone 3, isn't there a Nothing Phone 3A Pro?

• 55:47Andrew Manganelli?

  Yep.

• 55:47David Imel?

  Yes.

• 55:48Speaker 01

And is that below the Nothing Phone 3 or above the?

• 55:51David Imel?

  I think it's below.

• 55:52Andrew Manganelli?

I have the price. Do you want me to read the prices off for all of them?

• 55:54Speaker 01

  Maybe the prices, okay.

• 55:55David Imel?

And I want to, I want to acknowledge as well that the, this 3A Lite is almost the same price as the original Nothing Phone 1 launched.

• 56:03Andrew Manganelli?

That I did not have written down, but.

• 56:05David Imel?

  Yeah, okay.

• 56:05Andrew Manganelli?

So Nothing Phone 3 is 799.

• 56:07David Imel?

  Okay.

• 56:08Andrew Manganelli?

And then the 3A is 379, the 3A Pro is 459, and this 3A Lite is approximately 290 dollars. We're basing this off of, it's not available in the US, so it's 249 euros or?

• 56:20David Imel?

And you said the 3A Pro was 4.

• 56:22Andrew Manganelli?

  459.

• 56:23David Imel?

  59. And then the 3.

• 56:25Andrew Manganelli?

  Is $800.

• 56:26Speaker 01

  Okay, so that's the hierarchy.

• 56:28Andrew Manganelli?

Of that. And then the CMF Phone 2 Pro is $279.

• 56:33Speaker 01

Which is right below the 3A Lite.

• 56:35David Imel?

  Oh, right.

• 56:35Andrew Manganelli?

  It's $10 less.

• 56:36David Imel?

  Version of the budget.

• 56:37Speaker 01

Okay, okay, I got it. So it's, so it's the Nothing Phone 3, then it's the 3A Pro, then it's the 3A, then it's the 3A Lite, then it's the Nothing, a CMF Phone.

• 56:47Andrew Manganelli?

Correct. Also, the CMF Phones are listed on the Nothing website in the phone section. So like, you can see, I pulled all of these straight from the phone section on nothing.com. What you might notice is this 3, oh my God, trying to remember all these.

• 57:02Speaker 01

  3A Lite.

• 57:02Andrew Manganelli?

The 3A Lite pricing is super similar to the CMF Phone 2 Pro pricing.

• 57:06Speaker 01

  Right.

• 57:07Andrew Manganelli?

That's not the only thing that's similar.

• 57:08Speaker 01

  Wait, yeah.

• 57:09Andrew Manganelli?

I've posted a side by side here. Inside of our document.

• 57:13Speaker 01

  In it.

• 57:14Andrew Manganelli?

And do these phones look familiar? Could someone explain?

• 57:18Speaker 01

Okay, so the camera arrangements are practically identical. They're not like the same

• 57:27Speaker 01

colors and there's like some screws and stuff, but like by and large, a lot of the features of these things look very, very similar. Wait, okay, I have some questions then. And it looks like you have the answers. Are they the same chip?

• 57:41Andrew Manganelli?

  Yep.

• 57:41Speaker 01

  Are they the same display?

• 57:43Andrew Manganelli?

I mean, I have a set of specs here and let's just say they're the same.

• 57:48Speaker 01

Oh, my God. The button layouts are the same.

• 57:51David Imel?

  Oh, my God.

• 57:51Speaker 01

The camera layouts are the same.

• 57:53Andrew Manganelli?

  Correct.

• 57:54David Imel?

  Wow.

• 57:54Speaker 01

The camera, the battery is the same?

• 57:56Andrew Manganelli?

  Mm hmm.

• 57:57Speaker 01

Okay, so this is this, okay, so it's the same phone, but just with a different back and a different branding.

• 58:05Andrew Manganelli?

Yes, this is basically the CMF Phone 2 Pro with Nothing Design Language on the back, including a glass back versus the screw off, like David was saying, orange back.

• 58:15Speaker 01

It was funny. I was so ready to call this dumb, but I actually prefer the Nothing branding. And so I would buy this over the CMF Phone.

• 58:20David Imel?

Well, it's also like glass instead of plastic.

• 58:22Speaker 01

Yeah, like the CMF Phone's plastic, which like you can take off and do the modular thing.

• 58:25Andrew Manganelli?

  I believe it's plastic.

• 58:26Speaker 01

And have the like lanyard or whatever, but I would buy this over that.

• 58:29David Imel?

  Yeah, me too.

• 58:30Andrew Manganelli?

I think it's funny because I've kind of liked Nothing's clear white branding and

• 58:34Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 58:35Andrew Manganelli?

this is my favorite out of all of them because of how simple it is. It's just like mostly white, clear, some hints of black and red every once in a while. And that's about it. It's not over the top like some of the other Nothing Phones have been. And I think this is the best looking Nothing Phone.

• 58:49David Imel?

What's the weird like pull tab thing on the back?

• 58:52Speaker 01

I think that's just like the where the battery went in. Does the better is the better removable?

• 58:58Speaker 02

It looks like there's a little.

• 58:59Speaker 01

  This whole side?

• 59:00Speaker 02

Yeah, there's like a little scoop place for you to put your like, it looks like you're meant to take that.

• 59:05Speaker 01

It that's what it's supposed to look like. It's totally non-functional. It's just designed.

• 59:07Speaker 02

  You're kidding.

• 59:08Speaker 01

Of course. Yeah, that's just how it looks.

• 59:09Speaker 02

Now, it's one. It's one thing to choose design over function, but to design something to look functional is psychotic.

• 59:15Speaker 01

Have you heard of nothing before? That's their whole thing.

• 59:18Speaker 02

No, no, no. Nothing makes designs that look pretty. That's not pretty. That looks like that.

• 59:22Speaker 01

  No, no, no.

• 59:22Speaker 02

That literally invites you to stick your thumb in there.

• 59:25Speaker 01

Yeah, that's their whole aesthetic is like there are screws under there, which are supposed to invite you to unscrew things, but you never do that. You can't take this off and unscrew this.

• 59:32Speaker 02

I don't know, Mark has like, like there are screws that in all of our devices and I'm not, I don't feel begged to unscrew them. That that is like, look what's in there. That.

• 59:42Speaker 01

Most, I'll say most phones don't have like, they don't like visible screws.

• 59:47Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 59:47Speaker 01

  Their aesthetic is visible screws.

• 59:50Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 59:50Speaker 01

And visible screws to me feels like, oh, I can open the back. You can't open the back. All of this screams, I should be able to open the back, but you can't. And that's, that's just a nothing thing.

• 1:00:01Speaker 02

  You're losing me, Carl.

• 1:00:03Andrew Manganelli?

They also to go with the nothing, uh, design language is they've had glyph interfaces on a lot of other ones. This glyph interface is one singular white dot on the bottom, which at first I thought, wait, did we just get back notification LEDs? Like I remember on my Note 8, I had one LED on the front and like blue was text, green was email, yellow was Snapchat. Like, I loved that. And I thought this was that again. It's not. Um, in fact, when you go in the through the setup process, it says new glyph interface. And I'm waiting for an animation to happen.

• 1:00:36Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:00:36Andrew Manganelli?

And then I click next, expecting the animation to go, and it just goes into the essential button.

• 1:00:40Speaker 01

This could be so much cooler. Okay. So just to, so if video viewers are looking at this, there's a dot on the bottom right corner down here of the phone. It's a white LED.

• 1:00:51David Imel?

Uh, oh, man. So you can do the like essential notification thing, or if a certain

• 1:00:55Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:56David Imel?

app notifies you, then it lights up, which is some information. But if this was a multicolor LED.

• 1:01:02Andrew Manganelli?

  I know.

• 1:01:03David Imel?

I would be raving about this.

• 1:01:04Andrew Manganelli?

  I would too.

• 1:01:05David Imel?

I'm so happy about this. The simplest thing. Oh, that's so close.

• 1:01:08Andrew Manganelli?

It's funny that one multicolor LED would be better than every glyph nothing's ever done before, and they still didn't do it.

• 1:01:14David Imel?

God. I wonder if you could hack that, if it's actually like an RGB LED, kind of like the Nexus 6? Was it the Nexus 6?

• 1:01:22Andrew Manganelli?

I forgot. It was one of those.

• 1:01:23David Imel?

One of the Nexus's had a, had a, it was Shimano, yeah. Oh, you're saying which one had a multicolor LED? There was one that had a LED, like, they advertised that it's just a white notification LED on the back, and, but it would, it was actually a multicolor LED. They only used the, the white light. Uh, but there was in, within CyanogenMod, you could assign different colors to different app notifications. Because they were able to actually do that. So. Those were the days. Maybe this will be a thing that people can figure out.

• 1:01:55Andrew Manganelli?

  Hopefully.

• 1:01:56David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:56Andrew Manganelli?

  Um, I have.

• 1:01:57David Imel?

  Nexus S. Nexus S? But I did it on my phone. I didn't have a Nexus S. I don't know, whatever.

• 1:02:02Andrew Manganelli?

I have, um, one other interesting thing about this. So this is the first device that Nothing is launching with the feature called Lock Glimpse enabled by default. If you don't know what Lock Glimpse is, it's a setting that's been on some, I think it was in, uh, Nothing OS 4.0 beta, um, where essentially you turn it on and on your lock screen, now it changes every time you kind of turn the phone on and off, um, which can also sometimes go onto linked articles and what everyone's assuming are going to be paid ad spots for Nothing, which on the beta release, the community was really upset about it, to the point where three days ago, which would be, I think, the 26th, today is the 29th,

• 1:02:45Andrew Manganelli?

Nothing released a statement saying, guys, guys, pump the brakes, this is opt-in only, you have to go into the settings, you have to opt into this, it's not going to take over, and then full well knowing that three days later, this phone gets released with it turned on by default. I checked, I set up the phone, it's on by default.

• 1:03:03David Imel?

  Hmm.

• 1:03:03Andrew Manganelli?

Um, so presumably you now have, uh, not only does it come with TikTok, Instagram, and I, one other preloaded onto the phone.

• 1:03:12David Imel?

  Oh my gosh.

• 1:03:12Andrew Manganelli?

Um, you get Lock Glimpse pre-defaulted on. On this phone presumably to make it cheaper. So it's

• 1:03:20Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:03:20Andrew Manganelli?

$10. You kind of think like, is this worth 10 more dollars than the Nothing, the CMF Phone 2 Pro? Which kind of feels like it, if you like the design and the glass back, but.

• 1:03:29Speaker 01

  It also shows ads?

• 1:03:31Andrew Manganelli?

It does. I mean, you can turn it off, but it's a.

• 1:03:34Speaker 01

It was like, it was on by default like that?

• 1:03:35Andrew Manganelli?

It was on by default like that. Yep. It's funny because the article I read said, this is a slippery slope. It's like, wow, that slope is slick. Because three days later, it is already defaulted on.

• 1:03:45Speaker 01

  Dang.

• 1:03:46Andrew Manganelli?

Welcome to the Nothing CMF 2 Pro 2. Think even as a joke to mess that up, I messed it up. So I don't even know what I just said.

• 1:03:54Speaker 01

It would be the Nothing Phone 2 Ultra.

• 1:03:57David Imel?

  The CMF?

• 1:03:58Andrew Manganelli?

  The CMF Phone?

• 1:04:00Speaker 01

It would be a CMF Phone 2 Ultra, because it would be right above the CMF Phone 2 Pro.

• 1:04:05Speaker 04

You know what else is a 2 Pro?

• 1:04:07David Imel?

  A baby.

• 1:04:08Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, he was waiting.

• 1:04:10David Imel?

All my. Bring it out. All my e-ink enjoyers out there. All right. You know that we are big Books fans over here at the Waveform Podcast. More than one of us. Me and Ellis. So we talked about the Books.

• 1:04:29David Imel?

  Palma 2 Pro.

• 1:04:31Speaker 01

You say Books way, you hit the O way harder than I thought you were supposed to.

• 1:04:35David Imel?

  Fun, Marquez. It's fun.

• 1:04:37Speaker 01

It's not Books, though. You're saying Books.

• 1:04:39Andrew Manganelli?

  Today is the Boo.

• 1:04:43David Imel?

  Okay.

• 1:04:44Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:04:44David Imel?

We talked about the Books Palma 2 Pro.

• 1:04:46Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:04:46David Imel?

Which has an e-ink display. It also has a pen that unfortunately does not magnetize it to it and there's like no holder for it.

• 1:04:56Speaker 01

  It's optional.

• 1:04:57David Imel?

On the case. So, okay, so yeah. The big thing about this is that it has, it has a SIM card tray. Which has the ability to, you can either put a SIM card tray in it so that you can, you know, access books on the internet. Or you can download, you know, you can listen to Spotify or you could do whatever. It's, I'm wondering how close this is to a phone, because I don't really know if it has a microphone.

• 1:05:19Speaker 01

It's as close to a phone as the iPod Touch was to an iPhone.

• 1:05:22Speaker 02

Wait, you can't make phone calls on it?

• 1:05:24David Imel?

I'm not sure yet. I haven't tried. You can put data on it.

• 1:05:27Speaker 01

  On an iPod?

• 1:05:28David Imel?

There was no cellular on an iPod Touch, so it's actually closer to a phone on the iPod Touch.

• 1:05:32Speaker 01

But there was SIM data on an iPod?

• 1:05:34David Imel?

  No, no SIM.

• 1:05:35Speaker 01

Okay, yeah, this has SIM data, right?

• 1:05:37David Imel?

Yes, well, yeah, you can have a SIM card. So, okay, so it has a SIM card tray in it that can double as a micro SD card express or micro SD card reader. But it already has 128 gigs of storage in it, which is pretty good for a e-ink e-reader.

• 1:05:52Speaker 02

Twice as much as my 12 Mini.

• 1:05:54David Imel?

Has 8 gigs of RAM. It's got a 3,950-million-power battery.

• 1:06:01Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:06:01David Imel?

So that's pretty big, so it's probably gonna last a very long time.

• 1:06:04Speaker 02

Twice as much as my phone.

• 1:06:07David Imel?

A 6.13-inch Collidio 3E paper display, which is color, so it can do color now. Has an Octa Core CPU. It says AGPS, A-GPS, which I don't really know what that means. But there's this optional additional pen for it. So you can mark things up, and I've tried this so far, and it's very, very seamless, it's very quick. And then, the Folio case that they sell with it is a case, first off. And then it has this, it has MagSafe, by the way. It's like an unofficial MagSafe ring.

• 1:06:43Speaker 01

  It's everywhere.

• 1:06:44David Imel?

That the case attaches to. But the case also has magnets in it, so when you close the case, it locks. And when you open the case, it unlocks the Book's Palma 2 Pro.

• 1:06:55Speaker 01

  That's a subtle thing?

• 1:06:56David Imel?

  Which-

• 1:06:56Speaker 01

That everyone should be doing with their Folio cases.

• 1:06:58David Imel?

Very similar to the HTC Dot Matrix display case.

• 1:07:02Speaker 01

Yeah, for the M9 or whatever?

• 1:07:04David Imel?

  Yeah, for the M9.

• 1:07:05Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:07:06David Imel?

And, uh, yeah, I am just extremely excited to use this. I may put a SIM card in it and like see how close I can get to actually using it as a phone. I think it would be great. But also, I unboxed it just this morning, and it has an AI assistant. I'm not really sure-

• 1:07:21Speaker 01

  Of course.

• 1:07:22David Imel?

What a, what a reading tablet.

• 1:07:25Speaker 01

Summarize this book for me. Please don't summarize anything I'm reading.

• 1:07:29David Imel?

Yeah. So there is that, unfortunately.

• 1:07:32Speaker 02

They were so close to perfection.

• 1:07:34David Imel?

I know, they didn't, so they didn't put an air- area for the pen anywhere on the case, which is kind of annoying. I feel like they should have had like a loop on the front. But it does magnetize to it. So if it does magnetize to the front and it's pretty secure, it doesn't really feel like it's gonna fall off. So hopefully that wouldn't fall off in like a bag.

• 1:07:49Speaker 01

  But that's a coincidence.

• 1:07:50David Imel?

That's a, uh, I don't know. I think they might have done that on purpose.

• 1:07:53Speaker 01

  Oh, thank you.

• 1:07:53David Imel?

But also the case, even though it has MagSafe, like a MagSafe ring on the back, it can also turn into like this folio thing where it comes off and then is used as a kickstand.

• 1:08:04Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:08:04David Imel?

Uh, I again, am not really sure why you need a kickstand for your phone sized e-reader because you're not really gonna be watching videos or TikTok or anything on it.

• 1:08:12Speaker 01

  It's color.

• 1:08:13David Imel?

But it is color, so you could. Um, anyway, I'm very excited about this thing. We've been talking about it for weeks and, uh, I believe it's $400.

• 1:08:23Speaker 01

  Damn.

• 1:08:24David Imel?

Which is a bit expensive. It's a little bit more expensive than the previous Bookspalma 2.

• 1:08:27Speaker 01

Does the pen come with that $400 or is that separate?

• 1:08:30David Imel?

My friend. Yeah. Yeah. The InkSense Plus bundle, which is the pen, oh, it's only a digital $30.

• 1:08:37Speaker 01

  These names are wild.

• 1:08:38David Imel?

Oh, so the $30 comes with the case and the pen?

• 1:08:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:08:41David Imel?

  Wow.

• 1:08:42Speaker 01

  Sorry, the ink.

• 1:08:44David Imel?

  InkSense bundle.

• 1:08:45Speaker 01

The pen and the case come for the $30.

• 1:08:47David Imel?

Yeah, so it's $400 just for the Bookspalma Pro 2.

• 1:08:50Speaker 01

Somebody has to rewind and play what David just said.

• 1:08:53David Imel?

Oh, so the $30 comes with the case and the pen?

• 1:08:56Speaker 01

Just, you get $30 with the pen and the case, which would be really sick. They just give you $30 with everything. That's awesome.

• 1:09:03David Imel?

If you pay an extra 30 bucks, you, you get the, the case and the pen, which I think is a pretty good deal.

• 1:09:08Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:09:08David Imel?

Um, yeah, and it comes in black and white, but the black sucks and the white is awesome, so.

• 1:09:12Speaker 01

You said writing with the pen is pretty awesome.

• 1:09:14David Imel?

Yeah, the pen has pretty seamless, pretty much instantaneous feedback where it's just like, it just shows up on the screen immediately.

• 1:09:22Speaker 01

  Can we try?

• 1:09:23David Imel?

  Yeah, we can try it.

• 1:09:23Speaker 01

You should hold it up to the microphone for the ASMR of the pen on the surface. Is this like a nice, like, feeling surface to write on?

• 1:09:30David Imel?

  Yeah. Yeah, definitely.

• 1:09:32Speaker 01

  Kind of sounds nice.

• 1:09:32David Imel?

It's, it does sound nice, like.

• 1:09:35Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:09:40David Imel?

Anyway, I'm excited. I want to mainline this for a while because I've been using, I've been using the Books Palma 2 for a very long time. So

• 1:09:48Speaker 01

  There you have it.

• 1:09:49David Imel?

  We finally got it.

• 1:09:50Speaker 02

I want to play with that later.

• 1:09:51Andrew Manganelli?

What's the name of the AI assistant? Does it have a name?

• 1:09:54David Imel?

It just says AI assistant. Yeah, I don't know yet what the AI assistant does.

• 1:09:59Andrew Manganelli?

I'm surprised it doesn't have a name because Books is already like a pretty creative name. You'd think they would have went hard.

• 1:10:06Speaker 02

His name is like pager. I don't know. Can we do trivia, please?

• 1:10:11Andrew Manganelli?

  Yes.

• 1:10:12Speaker 02

  Spooky trivia.

• 1:10:13David Imel?

Books also makes like tablets and stuff under the Books brand. Just saying.

• 1:10:18Andrew Manganelli?

Cool. Uh, so Daniel Ek, CEO of Spotify, was also the CEO of what torrenting company briefly in 2006?

• 1:10:31Speaker 01

  Oh, wow.

• 1:10:33David Imel?

  Not surprised.

• 1:10:34Speaker 02

I didn't know this company had a CEO. I just assumed it was a bunch of guys in like a shipping container somewhere like, like breaking the law.

• 1:10:42Andrew Manganelli?

Full credit, Eric told me this this morning and I did not believe him and I looked it up and it was true.

• 1:10:46David Imel?

  It's, that's good.

• 1:10:47Andrew Manganelli?

Wait, a torrenting person turned into the Spotify?

• 1:10:50David Imel?

  Correct.

• 1:10:51Andrew Manganelli?

  That's fantastic. That's so good.

• 1:10:54David Imel?

So no matter what we write down, it's going to be pretty incredible.

• 1:10:58Andrew Manganelli?

I feel like all the torrenting sites at that time were, looked exactly the same, which is a different logo and color scheme.

• 1:11:03Speaker 02

This is good. He's a pirate. This is a good question for the pirate man.

• 1:11:07David Imel?

  It's true.

• 1:11:07Speaker 02

All right, now we'll do it.

• 1:11:18Speaker 01

Support for the show comes from Jira by Atlassian. So AI is only as useful as the context it has to work from. But when that context is scattered across tools like threads and DMs, that means your team and your AI agents end up flying kind of blind. That's the problem Jira solves. What's the goal tied to your project? What got decided last week in Slack? Atlassian's teamwork graph pulls all of these pieces together from Jira, Confluence, Slack, GitHub, and more, so nothing falls through the cracks. With Jira, you can actually share that context with the AI agents you already use, like Claude, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot. Assign them work directly or connect your agents through MCP. Spend less time digging through endless links and DMs, less time chasing down what got decided and by who, and more time actually shipping.

Welcome back. So those of you who are familiar with how we do things here around the office may know that we record this podcast right before eating lunch, which is why the third segment on today's show is going to be making the hosts eat a ton of candy at 12:36 PM. Specifically, we're to be doing a blind candy ranking where we give our hosts a series of pieces of Halloween candy that they must rank from... It was supposed to be 1 to 10, but I got a lot of fun candy. So maybe we can make it 1 to 12? So I'm going to say 1 to 12. Olivia, I'm sorry in advance because I already asked you to make a 1 through 10 ranking sheet, and now you're going to add two more. So sorry about that.

• 1:14:09Speaker 02

But what I'm going to need you guys to do is each eat the piece of candy that we hand to you and then agree on where it falls on the ranking without knowing what will come next. Are you guys ready?

• 1:14:24Speaker 01

As an experienced Halloween trick-or-treater, I may not need to eat most of these to know where I want to put them on the ranking.

• 1:14:31Speaker 02

No, no, no. That's not optional.

• 1:14:36Andrew Manganelli?

We are working together on this, correct?

• 1:14:38Speaker 02

You are working together on this. You must come to a consensus of where everything ranks.

• 1:14:42Andrew Manganelli?

Should we get a baseline between the three of us of just out of the blue? What is your favorite piece of Halloween candy?

• 1:14:49Speaker 02

  Ooh.

• 1:14:50Andrew Manganelli?

To know of like if right now you had like-

• 1:14:52David Imel?

I'm sorry to advance my answer.

• 1:14:54Andrew Manganelli?

Well, I just want to know like if it popped up, you're immediately number one, no questions asked.

• 1:14:59David Imel?

I think generally Twix for me.

• 1:15:01Andrew Manganelli?

I totally, I don't know if I agree, but you could convince me.

• 1:15:06David Imel?

I really like Twix, but my top candies are incredibly unpopular, unfortunately. But I like Reese's, I like Skittles and Starburst. I really like Starburst jelly beans. Have you had those?

• 1:15:18Andrew Manganelli?

  I love Starburst jelly beans.

• 1:15:19David Imel?

They're really good, but my top two are candy corn and dots.

• 1:15:22Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh.

• 1:15:23Speaker 02

  Candy corn is fire.

• 1:15:24Andrew Manganelli?

  Candy corn's sick. Dots is-

• 1:15:26Speaker 02

Wait, is this a whole room of candy corn enjoyers? That is so rare.

• 1:15:30Andrew Manganelli?

  It's so rare.

• 1:15:31David Imel?

Awesome. Usually somebody, I get a grown out of that usually. Give me the flavored wax.

• 1:15:35Andrew Manganelli?

Dots, dots gives me all grown at dots.

• 1:15:36David Imel?

The flavored wax. Dots is like once a year. That's why it's like good Halloween candy because I only eat candy corn once a year.

• 1:15:43Speaker 02

Wait, Mark has, why did I think you liked dots?

• 1:15:45Andrew Manganelli?

No, he does. He just has it as a top two.

• 1:15:47David Imel?

  That's my top two.

• 1:15:48Speaker 02

But they make you groan, Andrew.

• 1:15:50Andrew Manganelli?

  Yes.

• 1:15:50Speaker 02

  Okay. Well-

• 1:15:52Andrew Manganelli?

  It's a lot of chewing.

• 1:15:52Speaker 02

On that note, the first candy is dots.

• 1:15:57David Imel?

  That's, oh wow.

• 1:15:59Andrew Manganelli?

  Fucking go.

• 1:16:02David Imel?

  Alright, well-

• 1:16:03Andrew Manganelli?

Guys, I'm not eating anything. Just kidding. It's the hardest thing to chew. I will eat it.

• 1:16:07Speaker 02

Yeah, unfortunately, the variety pack that Alex bought only had one thing of dots in it, which was-

• 1:16:12Andrew Manganelli?

  As it should.

• 1:16:14Speaker 02

There's like 60 pieces of candy.

• 1:16:16David Imel?

  One.

• 1:16:17Andrew Manganelli?

Okay, I will say those are better than I remember.

• 1:16:20David Imel?

  There you go.

• 1:16:20Andrew Manganelli?

Similarly as chewy. There's a little bit of um aftertaste along the lines of the stuff the dentist used to clean your teeth.

• 1:16:28David Imel?

  That's-

• 1:16:29Andrew Manganelli?

Which isn't my favorite, but it's pretty good. I don't think I can agree with one.

• 1:16:34David Imel?

  It's not one.

• 1:16:35Andrew Manganelli?

  It's not one.

• 1:16:36David Imel?

  I like-

• 1:16:37Andrew Manganelli?

  I'll go-

• 1:16:38David Imel?

Top two and it's not two.

• 1:16:41David Imel?

You don't even know what the other ones are.

• 1:16:43Andrew Manganelli?

  I can't. There's, I can't put this top two.

• 1:16:47Speaker 01

All right. I'm not settling for anything out of the top half. Whatever.

• 1:16:49Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, no, no, I agree. I'll go top half. I like five.

• 1:16:53Speaker 02

  Five, five out of 12?

• 1:16:54Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah, five out of 12.

• 1:16:55Speaker 01

We're gonna get four better than this?

• 1:16:56David Imel?

  It's the first pick.

• 1:16:57Andrew Manganelli?

I think so. Yeah, yeah, okay, okay.

• 1:17:00Speaker 02

All right, dots in at number five. Candy number two, another polemical one. Candy number two is the blue dude. Polemical? Polemical?

• 1:17:12Speaker 01

  It's like a chemical thing?

• 1:17:13Speaker 02

Nope, just means that people get angry. Almond joy.

• 1:17:17Speaker 01

  Oh, I love almond joys.

• 1:17:19Andrew Manganelli?

You guys know how I feel about almonds?

• 1:17:22Speaker 01

  Damn.

• 1:17:23Andrew Manganelli?

Really? What do you feel about almonds?

• 1:17:25Speaker 01

  You felt joyful about almonds?

• 1:17:27Andrew Manganelli?

I didn't tell you how I feel about almonds?

• 1:17:28Speaker 01

No. Oh, I think you could just get rid of almonds and nothing of value would be lost.

• 1:17:32Speaker 02

  Mark, oh my god.

• 1:17:33Andrew Manganelli?

  I love almonds.

• 1:17:34Speaker 02

  This conversation again.

• 1:17:36Speaker 01

  Besides the water.

• 1:17:37Andrew Manganelli?

I can say, I will be with you similar to the rankings because I'm not a huge coconut person.

• 1:17:42David Imel?

  This is so good.

• 1:17:45David Imel?

  Oh my god.

• 1:17:47Speaker 01

This is top two and it's not two. I'm also not a huge coconut person.

• 1:17:52David Imel?

  This is so good.

• 1:17:53Andrew Manganelli?

Mark, as I'm interested where you are. You're under dots for this. I'm with you under dots.

• 1:17:58Speaker 01

No, he's above dots, so I can tell. It's, no, it's below dots. It's, it's better than expected and it's not because of the almond.

• 1:18:06David Imel?

This is so much better than.

• 1:18:06Andrew Manganelli?

  You like the coconut?

• 1:18:07Speaker 01

  I like coconut part.

• 1:18:09Andrew Manganelli?

I'm getting, I'm warming up to coconut, but this still just is not my favorite.

• 1:18:12Speaker 01

How do you feel about the, what's the Girl Scout cookie?

• 1:18:15Andrew Manganelli?

  Uh, Samoas.

• 1:18:17Speaker 01

  No, no, no.

• 1:18:17Andrew Manganelli?

It's got a different name now, I believe.

• 1:18:19Speaker 01

Yeah, I think it's Samoas. Oh, because Tagalong, yeah, Samoas.

• 1:18:21Andrew Manganelli?

  Tag along.

• 1:18:21Speaker 01

How do you feel about Samoas?

• 1:18:23Andrew Manganelli?

  I don't love them.

• 1:18:24Speaker 01

Okay, so this reminds me of Samoas.

• 1:18:26Andrew Manganelli?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:18:27Speaker 01

  I put this six.

• 1:18:30Speaker 02

  Four.

• 1:18:30Andrew Manganelli?

I'll go six. I think six because I'm scared of the back half. But I think I like dots more. I've been turning into a gummy candy person lately, so maybe dots is just hitting different as of now.

• 1:18:40Speaker 02

  Six? Six?

• 1:18:41Speaker 01

  We're putting a six.

• 1:18:42Speaker 02

  Oh my gosh.

• 1:18:43Speaker 01

These are, David wants it like one or two, but.

• 1:18:46David Imel?

Almond Joy is so much better than Dots. Dots are fine.

• 1:18:49Speaker 02

I'm gonna try to not give you all the super chewy ones in succession to like keep your jaws alive through this.

• 1:18:56Speaker 01

  Thank you.

• 1:18:56Speaker 02

  But.

• 1:18:57Speaker 01

But more Dots will be fine.

• 1:18:58Speaker 02

Well, they're not Dots, but they are a special Halloween edition.

• 1:19:02Speaker 01

  Laffy Taffy?

• 1:19:03Speaker 02

  Wild berry banana, Laffy Taffy.

• 1:19:07Andrew Manganelli?

  That flavor sounds wild.

• 1:19:10David Imel?

My jaw got tired listening to Ellis say what it was.

• 1:19:13Speaker 02

Was that my first missed throw? Damn.

• 1:19:15Speaker 01

I don't remember what a Laffy Taffy tastes like.

• 1:19:18David Imel?

Having a joke on every rapper was one of my favorite things about.

• 1:19:21Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, I didn't know that until I just read it right now, so.

• 1:19:23Speaker 02

You think it's just regular taffy?

• 1:19:25Speaker 01

Yeah, I wanna read my, can I read my jokes?

• 1:19:27David Imel?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:19:29Speaker 01

What do you do if you see a blue mango?

• 1:19:32Speaker 01

You try to cheer it up?

• 1:19:35David Imel?

  Okay, my answer to that?

• 1:19:36Speaker 02

  Wait, I don't get that.

• 1:19:37David Imel?

Wait, how does that make sense?

• 1:19:37Andrew Manganelli?

  A blue mango?

• 1:19:39David Imel?

  Mango.

• 1:19:40Speaker 02

  Oh, oh, okay.

• 1:19:42David Imel?

All right, my answer to that is you, you enjoy watching them play at the stadium. Cause like blue mango. Blue mango.

• 1:19:50Speaker 01

  It's blue.

• 1:19:51Andrew Manganelli?

I'm more with you on that one. Mine has two jokes.

• 1:19:53David Imel?

  Blue mango.

• 1:19:54Speaker 01

  Yeah, two jokes.

• 1:19:54Andrew Manganelli?

  Really?

• 1:19:55Speaker 01

  Yeah, everyone has two jokes.

• 1:19:56David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:19:57Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, I have the blue mango one. What's your other one, David? Do you have, what do you call two bananas?

• 1:20:03David Imel?

  No.

• 1:20:04Speaker 01

  Two colors.

• 1:20:05David Imel?

What is the most required skill to work in a juice factory?

• 1:20:09Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:20:09Andrew Manganelli?

  Ask Juicero.

• 1:20:12Speaker 01

  Damn, I don't know.

• 1:20:13David Imel?

  A good ability to concentrate.

• 1:20:15Speaker 02

  Ah, I like that.

• 1:20:18David Imel?

What do you call, oh wait, sorry, go ahead.

• 1:20:19Andrew Manganelli?

Mine's what do you call two bananas?

• 1:20:22Speaker 01

  Mine says that too.

• 1:20:23Andrew Manganelli?

A pair of slippers. Yeah, we got the same.

• 1:20:25David Imel?

  Slippers?

• 1:20:26Speaker 01

Oh, we got the same two jokes?

• 1:20:27David Imel?

Why are they, why are they slippers?

• 1:20:29Speaker 02

  Mine was like that.

• 1:20:30Andrew Manganelli?

  This is concerning the colors.

• 1:20:32Speaker 02

Oh, I don't like the way this one tastes.

• 1:20:34David Imel?

I'm gonna end up eating plastic.

• 1:20:35Andrew Manganelli?

It was less chewy than the Dots somehow.

• 1:20:38Speaker 01

  Bro. What? No, it wasn't.

• 1:20:40Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah, it was.

• 1:20:41Speaker 01

  No, it wasn't.

• 1:20:41David Imel?

  Considering.

• 1:20:42Andrew Manganelli?

I think it was less chewy. I was surprised at how not chewy it was.

• 1:20:45Speaker 01

If you wanted to eat a single dot versus a bite of Laffy Taffy.

• 1:20:51Andrew Manganelli?

Put a dot on one side of your mouth and a bite of Laffy Taffy on the other side of your mouth and see which one finishes first.

• 1:20:57Andrew Manganelli?

I think it takes longer to chew.

• 1:21:00Andrew Manganelli?

  Time in mouth is over.

• 1:21:03David Imel?

I took a small bite and it's stuck inside like in between my teeth.

• 1:21:07Speaker 01

It's way worse than a dot.

• 1:21:08Andrew Manganelli?

It's worse than dot. So I'm agreeing. I just think it's less chewy.

• 1:21:11David Imel?

  Let's say 10 or 11. 11. 11.

• 1:21:15Andrew Manganelli?

I'll go 11 on that. I think there's gonna be some gross stuff and at least I'll know it's gross. I had some.

• 1:21:21Speaker 01

  I'll go 10.

• 1:21:22Andrew Manganelli?

  Optimism.

• 1:21:22David Imel?

  10.

• 1:21:23Speaker 01

  I think 10.

• 1:21:24David Imel?

  I would do 10.

• 1:21:25Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay.

• 1:21:27Speaker 01

We're gonna get a Tootsie Roll level of like.

• 1:21:29David Imel?

  You don't like Tootsie Rolls?

• 1:21:30Speaker 01

  No, what?

• 1:21:32David Imel?

What are you talking? They're so good.

• 1:21:33Speaker 01

  Who likes?

• 1:21:34Andrew Manganelli?

Nevermind. I like Tootsie Rolls more than this. I like Tootsie Rolls more than this.

• 1:21:37Speaker 01

Wait, wait, wait, wait, sorry. Tootsie Rolls are a high value for you?

• 1:21:42David Imel?

Those are the brown chewy things.

• 1:21:44Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:21:44David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:45Speaker 02

How do you feel about flavored Tootsie Rolls?

• 1:21:47David Imel?

  I've never had them.

• 1:21:47Andrew Manganelli?

They're crazy. The, the blue ones vanilla. Tootsie Rolls are like.

• 1:21:51David Imel?

  It's good.

• 1:21:52Andrew Manganelli?

If Yahoo drinks were a chewy candy.

• 1:21:55Speaker 01

When you go Halloween shopping and you see the Tootsie Rolls, you like go right past them to the rest of the.

• 1:21:59Andrew Manganelli?

You can't because it's inside of every.

• 1:22:01Speaker 01

  I know.

• 1:22:03Speaker 02

I don't have classic Tootsie Rolls on this list, but should I go grab them?

• 1:22:06Speaker 01

  No, we know they're bad.

• 1:22:08Speaker 02

Okay, well, I do have orange flavored Tootsie Rolls.

• 1:22:12Speaker 01

Also the chewiest thing in existence, but okay.

• 1:22:15Speaker 02

Are these too small to throw across the studio?

• 1:22:17Andrew Manganelli?

  No, we got it.

• 1:22:18Speaker 01

We've got athletes in this room.

• 1:22:19Andrew Manganelli?

I've got perfect vision right now.

• 1:22:26Speaker 01

  It's in the face.

• 1:22:30Speaker 01

  That was really good.

• 1:22:33Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, I've got a mask on. It's not the first, that's probably like the sixth time I've been hit with something in the face on video.

• 1:22:39David Imel?

You have to zoom in on camera. Okay, zoom into that on camera.

• 1:22:44Speaker 02

Guys, how are we feeling? It's really, oh yeah, chewing, chewing.

• 1:22:48David Imel?

It was better in the first half, I will say.

• 1:22:50Speaker 02

  Got kind of worse.

• 1:22:51Speaker 01

  Okay. The first half.

• 1:22:53David Imel?

I'm done chewing. Okay, definitely better, better than the Laffy Taffy. Seven?

• 1:22:57Andrew Manganelli?

  Agreed.

• 1:22:58David Imel?

Way, way better than the classic Tootsie Roll. Just because of the orange. I like orange things, I think.

• 1:23:03Andrew Manganelli?

Citrus and candy go well together?

• 1:23:05David Imel?

  Yeah. I have it seven.

• 1:23:07Speaker 01

  I like seven.

• 1:23:09Andrew Manganelli?

I'll go seven. So we have.

• 1:23:10Speaker 04

It should have been six and all enjoy should have been higher.

• 1:23:13Speaker 02

  Well.

• 1:23:14Andrew Manganelli?

I'm. Five, six, seven, and a ten are what we currently have.

• 1:23:17Speaker 02

You have twelve, eleven, nine, eight, four, three, two, one.

• 1:23:21Andrew Manganelli?

Wait, so how many is that? Four?

• 1:23:23Speaker 02

  You have.

• 1:23:24Speaker 04

  New four so far.

• 1:23:25Speaker 01

We've done four, we got eight left.

• 1:23:26Speaker 02

  You've done four, yeah.

• 1:23:27Andrew Manganelli?

Okay, we gotta start looking in top five here because presumably at worst, half of these are Ellis concoctions, so.

• 1:23:36Speaker 04

  Hmm, okay.

• 1:23:36Andrew Manganelli?

Let's. Hmm. Open our eyes to the ones we've heard of before.

• 1:23:40Speaker 02

This next one, you know, I've heard Marquez, you like orange things.

• 1:23:43Andrew Manganelli?

  Mm hmm.

• 1:23:44Speaker 02

Andrew, citrus and candy go well together.

• 1:23:46Andrew Manganelli?

I saw what you had, I think.

• 1:23:47Speaker 02

I have a little treat from across the pond. This is a personal favorite of mine. This is a Terry's Dark Chocolate Orange. And I'm not going to throw this one. I'm going to bring it over to you because I don't know if this is not throwable.

• 1:24:01Andrew Manganelli?

Do they have fun sized versions of these for trick or treating? Or would you go to a house and take one of the pieces out of it? Or would it be a sweet house and you get the whole orange?

• 1:24:12Speaker 04

  Ideally, the whole orange.

• 1:24:13Andrew Manganelli?

  That's a sick house.

• 1:24:14Speaker 04

Yeah, that's like the one you want to go to.

• 1:24:16Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:17Speaker 04

That's the one where like when you're walking around later, you tell all your friends about and you're like, go to that house. Cause they're giving out whole.

• 1:24:22Speaker 01

Oh, this is an enormous piece of candy.

• 1:24:25Andrew Manganelli?

Have you never had one of these?

• 1:24:26Speaker 01

  Oh, no.

• 1:24:26Andrew Manganelli?

They're my father in law loves these. They're really good.

• 1:24:29Speaker 01

The size of an orange, but it's a bunch of slices.

• 1:24:31Andrew Manganelli?

  Mm hmm.

• 1:24:32Speaker 01

And even each individual slice is like pretty big.

• 1:24:35Speaker 02

I just shocked myself on the Mac Studio and my screen stopped flickering.

• 1:24:41Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, okay.

• 1:24:42Speaker 02

  So I just, I guess I re-grounded it. Andrew's enjoying it.

• 1:24:46Andrew Manganelli?

  I love this.

• 1:24:49Speaker 01

This isn't just as good as our.

• 1:24:50Speaker 04

We might disagree on the ranking then.

• 1:24:51Andrew Manganelli?

Well, here's my thing. This is Halloween candy rankings, correct? This is very good.

• 1:24:57Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:24:57Andrew Manganelli?

I'm wondering in the Halloween list where this is.

• 1:25:00Speaker 04

  I.

• 1:25:01Speaker 02

  Is that a different list?

• 1:25:03Speaker 02

I feel like it's just delicious.

• 1:25:03Andrew Manganelli?

Getting it at while knocking at the door on the house.

• 1:25:07Speaker 02

I'd be very happy if I got one of these.

• 1:25:08Andrew Manganelli?

  True.

• 1:25:09Speaker 01

You get the whole thing, the whole orange thing.

• 1:25:11Andrew Manganelli?

And then your mom's like, you're gonna have one piece of candy tonight. You just rip open the giant orange.

• 1:25:15Speaker 02

Giant orange. Okay, I'll. Prefer this to the fruit chew.

• 1:25:18Speaker 01

I'll admit, I'm not a big dark chocolate person, so this was, this is low for me. This is below the Laffy Taffy.

• 1:25:24Andrew Manganelli?

  Really?

• 1:25:25Speaker 02

Not even a seven or twelve.

• 1:25:27Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:25:28Andrew Manganelli?

I can't, I have to have this as.

• 1:25:29Speaker 01

  Maybe it's a nine?

• 1:25:30Speaker 02

  That's unbelievable.

• 1:25:32Speaker 01

  Four.

• 1:25:33Andrew Manganelli?

This is top five for me, for what we currently have going. It's above everything that's three.

• 1:25:38Speaker 02

And unfortunately, but you don't have anything between four and eight available. So you need to make a call. Is it top four or is it bottom four?

• 1:25:46Speaker 01

  Cannot be.

• 1:25:47Andrew Manganelli?

I think it's. Where are we?

• 1:25:48Speaker 01

I guess it's eight then, because I can't. This is not better than dots and Almond Joy.

• 1:25:53Speaker 02

  This is.

• 1:25:53Andrew Manganelli?

  Do you know?

• 1:25:53Speaker 02

  The orange Tootsie Roll.

• 1:25:54Andrew Manganelli?

  What's coming next?

• 1:25:55Speaker 01

This is, I, but I don't like dark chocolate. Like I specifically don't. If this was milk chocolate, I might be okay with putting it four.

• 1:26:02Andrew Manganelli?

Okay, well, can you put your taste aside and imagine a dark, a milk chocolate? Or imagine you liking dark chocolate?

• 1:26:10Speaker 02

  It's not the game.

• 1:26:11Speaker 01

  I'm coming up from eleven.

• 1:26:14Speaker 01

  To eight.

• 1:26:15Andrew Manganelli?

I guess technically we're going the same amount of way. If David and I said four, it's about the same.

• 1:26:20Speaker 01

  So I think.

• 1:26:21Andrew Manganelli?

All right, we're gonna regret this eight.

• 1:26:22Speaker 02

  Number eight.

• 1:26:24Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:26:24Speaker 02

  Come on, man.

• 1:26:25Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:26:26Speaker 02

Anyway, guys, you know what's better than candy?

• 1:26:28Speaker 01

  I'm looking at.

• 1:26:31Speaker 01

I am not, I am nervous about this.

• 1:26:33Speaker 02

  Money?

• 1:26:34Andrew Manganelli?

  Baked beans.

• 1:26:35Speaker 01

  Oh, God.

• 1:26:35Speaker 02

  Specifically.

• 1:26:37Speaker 01

No one gives a sound on Halloween.

• 1:26:38Speaker 02

  Boston baked beans.

• 1:26:39Speaker 01

  Yeah, boy.

• 1:26:40Speaker 02

Wait, what? Like candy I have never heard of.

• 1:26:43Speaker 01

  Really?

• 1:26:43Speaker 02

  Before yesterday.

• 1:26:45Speaker 01

  Where'd you find it?

• 1:26:46Speaker 02

I found this at Economy Candy in Lower Manhattan.

• 1:26:50Speaker 01

Like with the rest of the Halloween candy?

• 1:26:52Speaker 02

I spent company money on this, but it was still a really great experience. So I get they, they should have a shout out. Economy Candy.

• 1:26:58Speaker 01

Hmm, Economy Candy. That feels like where you would find baked beans as a candy.

• 1:27:03Speaker 02

That is in fact where I found baked beans as a candy. Anyway, you guys don't have a nut allergy, do you?

• 1:27:08David Imel?

No, we already ate the almond joy.

• 1:27:11Andrew Manganelli?

Four candy bars late to that.

• 1:27:13Speaker 02

  Wait a second.

• 1:27:16Speaker 01

So the company is Boston baked beans and it says artificially flavored candy coated peanuts.

• 1:27:21Speaker 02

I don't, do they taste like beans?

• 1:27:23Speaker 01

I really hope not. That would be so dumb. It's better than I expected it to be.

• 1:27:27Speaker 02

  You have.

• 1:27:28David Imel?

  Me too.

• 1:27:29Speaker 02

12, 11, 9, and then four through one available.

• 1:27:31David Imel?

  Four.

• 1:27:32Speaker 01

  It's not above dots.

• 1:27:33Andrew Manganelli?

It can't be above dots. Do you know what has to be above dots? The deeper we go into this, we're breaking all the blind ranking rules of.

• 1:27:43Speaker 01

Look, either, there's two possibilities here. Either Ellis saved all of the good candies for last, or Ellis somehow found four even worse candies than these and our rankings will be upside down and that's okay.

• 1:27:56Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay, I love your optimism.

• 1:27:58David Imel?

It's gonna be the next one, there's gonna be Twix, Three Musketeers, Reese's, it's gonna be class.

• 1:28:03Speaker 01

Skittles, Starburst, Jelly Beans, Candy Corn.

• 1:28:06Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, fish paste, the good stuff.

• 1:28:07Speaker 02

No, there's no, there's no seafood. I couldn't find seafood.

• 1:28:09Speaker 01

I think this is, let's put this in at nine.

• 1:28:13Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay.

• 1:28:14Speaker 02

  Nine?

• 1:28:14Speaker 01

Are there gonna be two worse than this? Probably, right?

• 1:28:16David Imel?

  This is four for me.

• 1:28:18Speaker 01

This is not better than Almond Joy.

• 1:28:20David Imel?

I don't, I agree. But Almond Joy should be higher up.

• 1:28:24Speaker 01

Look, all of our, all of our rankings as we insert them will be correct until they're all wrong.

• 1:28:30David Imel?

  They're already all wrong.

• 1:28:31Speaker 01

  They're all right so far.

• 1:28:33Andrew Manganelli?

No, they're not. No, they're not. We have nine open.

• 1:28:38David Imel?

Are we really putting this on nine?

• 1:28:40Andrew Manganelli?

  Well, I don't think it's 11 or 12.

• 1:28:41David Imel?

  My god.

• 1:28:42Speaker 01

  It's not 11 or 12. So now, all we have left is 1, 2, 3, 4, 11 or 12.

• 1:28:46David Imel?

  Oh my god.

• 1:28:48Speaker 02

  Fun Dip.

• 1:28:48Speaker 01

That's not even candy, is it?

• 1:28:49David Imel?

  It's, yeah, it's sugar.

• 1:28:51Andrew Manganelli?

It's candy you dip in more candy.

• 1:28:53David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:28:54Speaker 02

I just realized that the full name of Fun Dip is Lick-A-Made.

• 1:29:00Speaker 02

  That's disgusting.

• 1:29:00David Imel?

It's like lemonade that you lick. Lemonade powder.

• 1:29:05Speaker 02

And I'm gonna bring this one over too because one of the Fun Dips burst open while in transit and so I spent way too much time yesterday cleaning Fun Dip off of this desk. It was no fun whatsoever.

• 1:29:19Speaker 01

Why are there two? Because you have to open the left side?

• 1:29:23David Imel?

  I don't know.

• 1:29:26Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh wait, open horizontally.

• 1:29:32David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:29:32Speaker 02

David, this is your first fun dip? Okay, so David, inside that package is a stick made out of pure white sugar. And then a packet of powder, which I assume you've just discovered.

• 1:29:44David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:29:45Speaker 02

You lick the, the sugar stick.

• 1:29:49Speaker 02

And then dip it in the powder.

• 1:29:51David Imel?

  Powder's kinda good. Hmm.

• 1:29:53Speaker 02

  Try it with the stick.

• 1:29:54David Imel?

It's blue, but it turns green. Can I open the other side?

• 1:29:57Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:29:57Andrew Manganelli?

  Horizontally.

• 1:29:59David Imel?

  What?

• 1:29:59Andrew Manganelli?

  Like across the top.

• 1:30:01David Imel?

Oh, like that? Oh, that's how you're supposed to open it? Aren't kids supposed to know that? If I didn't even know that.

• 1:30:06Speaker 02

I feel like it's like tacit kid knowledge.

• 1:30:08David Imel?

  They just know. Yeah.

• 1:30:09Andrew Manganelli?

You know how like when baby giraffes are born, they can walk within minutes?

• 1:30:14Speaker 02

Are you dipping it in the table pile?

• 1:30:17Andrew Manganelli?

Know how like when Neo was invented, it couldn't do anything?

• 1:30:20David Imel?

Yo, the white thing tastes really good. And I could say four for this. I like it. I don't hate it. I'm okay with that. Objectively, it's not four, but I think given where we're at. I got it all over the Boogs Palma Pro 2.

• 1:30:35Andrew Manganelli?

I like how they were like, hey, we could just make those stick with the blue sugar. And it, you would just eat it.

• 1:30:43David Imel?

  I think I would.

• 1:30:43Andrew Manganelli?

They're like, no, let's make a slightly worse tasting sugar. And now dip it in the blue sugar.

• 1:30:48David Imel?

Yeah. I have my, I have my own rankings here as well that I might share after. But yeah, I, in general, we only have one, two, three, four, or 11 or 12 open right now. And this is not worse than the Boston baked beans or the Laffy Taffy. So I guess it's four.

• 1:31:04Speaker 02

  Four.

• 1:31:04Andrew Manganelli?

  I'll go four.

• 1:31:05David Imel?

  Four.

• 1:31:06Andrew Manganelli?

  Unanimous four.

• 1:31:07David Imel?

  Unanimous four.

• 1:31:08Speaker 02

Up next, we have another jaw tester.

• 1:31:11David Imel?

  Oh, no.

• 1:31:12Speaker 02

  Movie theaters everywhere, fear them.

• 1:31:14Andrew Manganelli?

  Milk duds.

• 1:31:15Speaker 02

  They're milk duds.

• 1:31:16David Imel?

  Oh, God.

• 1:31:17Andrew Manganelli?

  Heard of these.

• 1:31:18David Imel?

  This just.

• 1:31:18Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, you haven't had these? This is chocolate dots.

• 1:31:20David Imel?

They taste, they taste delicious, but they destroy your teeth.

• 1:31:24Andrew Manganelli?

  It's chocolate dots.

• 1:31:26David Imel?

  They are hella good, though.

• 1:31:27Andrew Manganelli?

Audio listeners have been missing Ellis's perfect throws this entire episode. Shout out to Ellis. I've caught everyone else.

• 1:31:33David Imel?

It's been really good. Oh, my God, I love these. My grandma, may she rest in peace, really loved these. Yeah.

• 1:31:40Andrew Manganelli?

  She had good taste?

• 1:31:42David Imel?

She got them every time I went to a movie. Ew.

• 1:31:52David Imel?

Kind of just like plastic a little bit.

• 1:31:55David Imel?

Okay, it gets better. Does it? I don't know.

• 1:31:58Andrew Manganelli?

  These are the chewiest.

• 1:31:59David Imel?

Sorry grandma, I don't know. I don't know about that.

• 1:32:02Speaker 02

Is it better than Laffy Taffy?

• 1:32:04David Imel?

  No.

• 1:32:04Speaker 01

  Unfortunately, this is.

• 1:32:05Speaker 02

  I mean, yes, yes.

• 1:32:06Andrew Manganelli?

  No, I don't know. I think I might.

• 1:32:08Speaker 02

Laffy Taffy should have been 12.

• 1:32:09David Imel?

  The eating experience is compromised.

• 1:32:14Speaker 02

Guys, I need a number. Is it top three or bottom?

• 1:32:18Andrew Manganelli?

  I think it's bottom two.

• 1:32:18David Imel?

  I think it's top three.

• 1:32:19Speaker 01

  Bottom two.

• 1:32:21Andrew Manganelli?

  I'm on bottom two.

• 1:32:22Speaker 02

I'm here in, I'm here in.

• 1:32:23David Imel?

  Our list is so.

• 1:32:25Andrew Manganelli?

You, you audibly said ew when you ate it.

• 1:32:28David Imel?

  Yeah, but it got better.

• 1:32:30Andrew Manganelli?

I think in the scenario we're at now, I'm in bottom two.

• 1:32:34Speaker 01

  11, you think?

• 1:32:36Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 1:32:36David Imel?

Okay. For the context of this, don't think of it as it's three or it's 11. Think of it as it's three or it's four.

• 1:32:43Speaker 01

One of the best or one of the worst.

• 1:32:45David Imel?

Because we can't change the other ones.

• 1:32:47Speaker 01

  Agreed.

• 1:32:47David Imel?

And our list is messed up.

• 1:32:49Speaker 01

  Yeah, so is it?

• 1:32:50David Imel?

Is it three or is it four?

• 1:32:52Andrew Manganelli?

Marcus has held that ever since we put dots at not one.

• 1:32:56Speaker 01

Dots are still my number one.

• 1:32:57David Imel?

  So you think it's four?

• 1:32:59Speaker 01

Here's where it goes in my actual rankings.

• 1:33:02David Imel?

Four out of the remaining possible five.

• 1:33:04Speaker 01

  I think it's, yeah.

• 1:33:05David Imel?

I think it'd be three. It's like mid.

• 1:33:08Speaker 01

That was pretty hard to eat.

• 1:33:10David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:33:11Speaker 01

I wouldn't buy it ever. I think the line of what I buy it ever is right here for me. Anyway, let's go 11. I think 11.

• 1:33:18Andrew Manganelli?

Sorry David, I'm with 11 on this one.

• 1:33:20Speaker 02

  I am. I guess it's.

• 1:33:22Andrew Manganelli?

Willing to take the risk. I think I'm just in the category of we're taking the risk now. And we're, I'm trying to join the optimism.

• 1:33:28David Imel?

  Skittles, Ellis, come on. Skittles.

• 1:33:30Speaker 02

This one is very similar to Skittles. It's, it's like, I would describe it as like a Skittles analog. But guys, first you need to tell me, have you ever like really, really, really wanted to eat soap?

• 1:33:45David Imel?

I did and it sucked. Anyway, not intentional.

• 1:33:49Speaker 02

You've never wanted to eat soap.

• 1:33:50Andrew Manganelli?

  I've never wanted.

• 1:33:51David Imel?

Some good colors. No, I've never wanted to eat soap.

• 1:33:53Speaker 02

Then I don't, I'm sorry. Uh, would you please bring these to our contestants, Adam? I did not know this product existed. This is edible candy bubble juice with a bubble blowing wand.

• 1:34:07David Imel?

  What?

• 1:34:07Andrew Manganelli?

  God.

• 1:34:08Speaker 02

Please do not spill this in our studio.

• 1:34:10David Imel?

  This is bad teaching.

• 1:34:11Andrew Manganelli?

Bubble lick, it's birthday cake flavor.

• 1:34:14David Imel?

Really dangerous. Yeah, kids are definitely.

• 1:34:17Speaker 01

So the whole thing, so, so to be clear, just for, for audio listeners, it looks like a clear tube of like bubble soap, like bubble blowing soap with a little wand that you blow bubbles with. But the entire contents of it are edible?

• 1:34:33Speaker 02

  I don't know. I didn't really read the label.

• 1:34:34Andrew Manganelli?

  You've never had this before?

• 1:34:35Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:34:36Andrew Manganelli?

What are the chances we could blow a bubble and someone catches it in their mouth?

• 1:34:39Speaker 01

That's what you're supposed to do. You blow the bubbles and then you catch them and the bubbles are sweet and delicious.

• 1:34:43David Imel?

  Really?

• 1:34:44Speaker 02

This one is birthday cake flavored.

• 1:34:46Speaker 01

Not only is this a horrible product, but it's a super bad idea.

• 1:34:51David Imel?

Burst all over my face, dude. Jesus.

• 1:34:54Andrew Manganelli?

Taking clear should automatically be fruit flavored. So making your birthday cake flavored is.

• 1:35:01Speaker 02

They did have clear ones that were fruit flavored. I just.

• 1:35:03David Imel?

Ew, it's like dripping all over me. Jesus.

• 1:35:05Andrew Manganelli?

I'm not gonna blow bubbles. I'm just gonna taste it.

• 1:35:07David Imel?

  It's dripping all over me.

• 1:35:08Speaker 01

It tastes a little bit like bubble soap.

• 1:35:11David Imel?

  Do not drink solution.

• 1:35:12Speaker 01

It says lick only in bubble form.

• 1:35:14Speaker 02

  Ha, okay, sweet.

• 1:35:16Andrew Manganelli?

I just. Stuck the whole on to my mouth.

• 1:35:17David Imel?

I did too. My throat is burning.

• 1:35:20Speaker 01

And kids are not gonna read that and they're gonna do the same thing.

• 1:35:23David Imel?

  Ew.

• 1:35:23Speaker 01

  This has to be twelve.

• 1:35:24David Imel?

  Wait, this kinda hurts.

• 1:35:26Speaker 01

  This is bad.

• 1:35:26Andrew Manganelli?

I'm so glad we left twelve.

• 1:35:28David Imel?

If solution gets into eyes, rents eyes with water.

• 1:35:32Andrew Manganelli?

  This sounds pretty toxic, bro.

• 1:35:34David Imel?

  Twelve.

• 1:35:35Andrew Manganelli?

  That's twelve.

• 1:35:36David Imel?

  Twelve.

• 1:35:36Speaker 01

The highlight, the absolute best part was that when I opened it, it smelled like birthday cake for a second.

• 1:35:41David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:35:42Speaker 01

And then everything after that point was miserable.

• 1:35:45Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, yeah, my mouth.

• 1:35:46Speaker 01

Dead last. Can't believe they just got money out of us. That was terrible.

• 1:35:50David Imel?

  Yeah, my throat hurts.

• 1:35:51Andrew Manganelli?

Skittles, Ellis. Skittles. Reese's, Starburst, there has to be.

• 1:35:55Speaker 02

Guys, this next candy is also, I would say, a Skittles analog.

• 1:36:00Speaker 01

Wait, how is this a Skittles analog?

• 1:36:03Speaker 02

  I lied.

• 1:36:05Speaker 02

It's not. This one, though, is both round and colorful.

• 1:36:11David Imel?

  Alright.

• 1:36:11Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay.

• 1:36:12Speaker 02

It is cult classic candy of the ages. Candy buttons. For those, I don't know if this is a thing outside the US. It's essentially pieces of sugar dotted onto a long piece of receipt paper.

• 1:36:26Andrew Manganelli?

  It's like candy acid.

• 1:36:28Speaker 02

I love these personally. These are my, out of everything here would probably be, oh, you know, eating the paper is also part of it.

• 1:36:35David Imel?

  Actually, or just like?

• 1:36:36Speaker 02

Well, I mean, it's just, I've never had one without a little bit of-

• 1:36:39David Imel?

  It's edible paper?

• 1:36:40Speaker 02

No, but I've just never eaten one without paper on it.

• 1:36:43Andrew Manganelli?

Anything eaten after candy bubbles is like S tier.

• 1:36:47David Imel?

This is so, so much better.

• 1:36:50Andrew Manganelli?

This is like quintessential, like, five and dime store, like, pick up candy from it.

• 1:36:56Speaker 02

Exactly. Looks like David's eaten a second one.

• 1:37:03Andrew Manganelli?

  Ooh.

• 1:37:04David Imel?

Oh, that was, that was a different flavor.

• 1:37:06Speaker 02

  Three.

• 1:37:07David Imel?

  Three.

• 1:37:08Andrew Manganelli?

  Three.

• 1:37:09David Imel?

Or two. Do we want to leave it open and get this bad?

• 1:37:12Speaker 01

We just have to embrace the shit up.

• 1:37:14David Imel?

  So.

• 1:37:15Speaker 01

Embrace the nightmare that is one and two.

• 1:37:17David Imel?

  This is alright.

• 1:37:18Andrew Manganelli?

I'm like trying to imagine, Marquez is gonna leave this room and go find all the good candy and eat it just to feel something after.

• 1:37:24David Imel?

And maybe say one or two. I mean, two.

• 1:37:26Speaker 01

There's no world, someone, that this is the best Halloween candy.

• 1:37:30David Imel?

Out of the, the two we have left. Don't think about it while we've already tried.

• 1:37:34Andrew Manganelli?

  I have to.

• 1:37:36David Imel?

You have to think about it, what we might have left.

• 1:37:38Speaker 01

In a world where we have one, two, and three open? And we're ranking best Halloween candy? And we open this wrapper and eat this, we have to put three.

• 1:37:46David Imel?

And you don't know what the other two are.

• 1:37:47Speaker 01

  We have to put three.

• 1:37:49David Imel?

  Better.

• 1:37:49Speaker 01

  There's no way.

• 1:37:50David Imel?

  Or what if they're worse?

• 1:37:51Speaker 01

It can't be, it can't be worse.

• 1:37:52David Imel?

Dude, we just had bubble, bubble.

• 1:37:56Speaker 01

Ellis wouldn't do this to us. You think Ellis would do this to us?

• 1:37:58David Imel?

  Yeah. A hundred percent.

• 1:38:00Speaker 01

  Look at this man.

• 1:38:01David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:38:02Speaker 01

Do you think he would give us candy worse than this?

• 1:38:04David Imel?

  Absolutely.

• 1:38:05Speaker 01

He's probably saving the worst one for last.

• 1:38:07David Imel?

I think he would die if you drank this.

• 1:38:09Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, wait, do you know what I forgot?

• 1:38:11Speaker 01

  What?

• 1:38:12Andrew Manganelli?

Ellis put a spoon in front of all of us.

• 1:38:15Speaker 02

  You do all have spoons.

• 1:38:17Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, this could suck. That's really bad with one to open.

• 1:38:22Speaker 01

What kind of Halloween candy do you give to kids that requires a spoon?

• 1:38:26Speaker 02

I don't remember ever saying Halloween when I.

• 1:38:28Andrew Manganelli?

You opened this as Halloween candy.

• 1:38:30Speaker 02

It just happens to be Halloween and we're eating candy.

• 1:38:33Andrew Manganelli?

  It can be unrelated.

• 1:38:34Speaker 02

Adam, play the tape. Specifically, we're to be doing a blind candy ranking where we give our hosts a series of pieces of Halloween candy that they must rank. See, now you all know that I'm right.

• 1:38:46Speaker 01

  My ear.

• 1:38:47Speaker 02

  Or wrong.

• 1:38:47Andrew Manganelli?

  You're definitely wrong.

• 1:38:49Speaker 02

All right, guys, this next one, um.

• 1:38:51Andrew Manganelli?

  Needs no introduction. Oh, okay.

• 1:38:53Speaker 02

  That is tea berry gum.

• 1:38:54Andrew Manganelli?

Okay, you, Ellis said they're gonna have to spit this out and I was like, oh.

• 1:38:58Speaker 01

I'm not gonna, I'll sniff it. Are there multiple packs?

• 1:39:01Andrew Manganelli?

  What's tea berry?

• 1:39:02Speaker 02

  I don't know.

• 1:39:03Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, I'll try.

• 1:39:04Speaker 02

I, I, I got, this was the one I got where I was like, that's how.

• 1:39:09Andrew Manganelli?

I'm not gonna smell, I'm just gonna go.

• 1:39:12Speaker 02

You can spit it out to the paper towels that we put in front of you.

• 1:39:16Speaker 02

  Yeah, we're good producers.

• 1:39:18Speaker 01

You somehow managed to give us worse candy every single time.

• 1:39:21Andrew Manganelli?

So it has a hint of flavor of every type of gum I can imagine in this stick form, but just like the La Croix version of it. Like, I almost get a sense of Big Red, I almost get a sense of Spearman.

• 1:39:33Speaker 02

Well, is it number one or number two?

• 1:39:35Speaker 01

Unfortunately, with the way things are trending, this probably should be number one, but this is number two.

• 1:39:39David Imel?

Yeah, see my, see, see my perspective.

• 1:39:41Speaker 01

Look at this list, are you proud, look at this list.

• 1:39:44Speaker 02

Are you asking if I'm proud of myself?

• 1:39:46Speaker 01

  Look at this list.

• 1:39:47David Imel?

Mark has, this could have been number three, just saying, if we put the buttons as number two.

• 1:39:51Andrew Manganelli?

At this point, bubble juice being 12, we succeeded.

• 1:39:54Speaker 01

Whatever Ellis pulls out that bag, we have to say is better than all of these candies.

• 1:39:59David Imel?

Yeah, it will probably be better than this, though, at the minimum, right?

• 1:40:03Andrew Manganelli?

That's what I thought about the last three.

• 1:40:05Speaker 01

  I, we'll, we'll see, we'll see.

• 1:40:07David Imel?

All right, so what are you doing, putting it one or two?

• 1:40:10Speaker 02

  Two.

• 1:40:10David Imel?

Two? All right, tea berry gum at number two.

• 1:40:12Speaker 01

  I'm ready for the chaos.

• 1:40:14Speaker 02

Gentlemen, all right, get out your spoons.

• 1:40:19Andrew Manganelli?

  The best candy.

• 1:40:20Speaker 02

  Ice cream?

• 1:40:21Andrew Manganelli?

  As chosen by you.

• 1:40:23Speaker 02

Yeah. That's. Waveform's official best candy ever.

• 1:40:26Speaker 01

  That's crazy. Crazy work.

• 1:40:29Speaker 02

  Gentlemen, I am.

• 1:40:31Speaker 01

  It's like sunscreen.

• 1:40:32Speaker 02

I am going to ask you.

• 1:40:34Speaker 01

  What?

• 1:40:34Speaker 02

  To squeeze. The ooze tube.

• 1:40:38Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh.

• 1:40:39Speaker 01

  It's not. It's the aloe?

• 1:40:41Speaker 02

It is. It is ooze tube liquid candy. By Sweet Bandit. It is green apple flavor.

• 1:40:50Andrew Manganelli?

This could slap. Just saying. I'll go first.

• 1:40:53Speaker 01

The only reason that some of these companies are are still in business is because, what was it called? The Economy Candy Store exists? Is that what it was? Is that what it was called?

• 1:41:04Speaker 02

  Yeah, Economy Candy.

• 1:41:05Speaker 01

  Economy Candy.

• 1:41:05Speaker 02

Rivington in Lower Manhattan. It's really fun. You should go.

• 1:41:08Speaker 01

That is probably the only place that you will find ooze tube liquid candy. Green apple flavored.

• 1:41:15Andrew Manganelli?

  Green apple slaps. I'm ready.

• 1:41:17Speaker 01

  Knock yourself out.

• 1:41:18Andrew Manganelli?

  All right.

• 1:41:19Speaker 02

  Marquez just bypassed.

• 1:41:21Andrew Manganelli?

The only thing. Did you? Was this sealed?

• 1:41:24Speaker 02

Yeah, I did break the seal.

• 1:41:25Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay, thank goodness.

• 1:41:27Speaker 02

All right, audio listeners, Andrew is emptying the ooze tube into his spoon.

• 1:41:32Speaker 01

  Brother. That's so much.

• 1:41:34Speaker 02

It's really stringy, but it also, it does have sort of the consistency of aloe vera.

• 1:41:39Speaker 01

  Let's go.

• 1:41:39Andrew Manganelli?

  We'll go together.

• 1:41:41Speaker 01

Wait, Marquez, you're not doing this?

• 1:41:42Andrew Manganelli?

  No. Why? Why?

• 1:41:44Speaker 01

  Look at it.

• 1:41:45Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah? I actually think this is gonna be good.

• 1:41:47Speaker 02

I mean, we know it's good because it's literally the number one candy, according to Waveform Podcast hosts.

• 1:41:52Speaker 01

If we flip this list upside down, it's actually better.

• 1:41:55Speaker 02

That would put the bubble juice at number one, Marquez.

• 1:41:58Speaker 01

It would also put Happy Cafe and Milk Duds above.

• 1:42:00Andrew Manganelli?

  This is.

• 1:42:01Speaker 01

  Beans.

• 1:42:02Andrew Manganelli?

This is a melted green apple Jolly Rancher.

• 1:42:04Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 1:42:05Andrew Manganelli?

  It's pretty good.

• 1:42:08Andrew Manganelli?

Doesn't like it. It literally tastes like a green apple Jolly Rancher.

• 1:42:12Speaker 01

  That's probably a compliment.

• 1:42:14Andrew Manganelli?

  That's kind of a compliment.

• 1:42:15Speaker 01

Notice we didn't get Jolly Ranchers.

• 1:42:16Andrew Manganelli?

It's burning my throat. Well, it's number one.

• 1:42:20Speaker 07

  It's number one.

• 1:42:21Andrew Manganelli?

Way worse could have been number one.

• 1:42:23Speaker 01

  All right.

• 1:42:23Andrew Manganelli?

Actually, out of the last three things we ranked, this was the best out of all.

• 1:42:26Speaker 01

Just to, just to go back over this list, we picked ooze tube, green apple flavor, number one. Tea berry gum, number two. Candy buttons, number three.

• 1:42:38David Imel?

  That's what I'm saying, man.

• 1:42:39Speaker 01

Fun dip, number four. Dots, five, almond joy, six, orange tutsy roll, seven, dark chocolate, orange, eight. Boston baked beans, nine. Laffy taffy, 10, milk duds, 11, bubble juice. Couldn't escape.

• 1:42:53David Imel?

  Acid.

• 1:42:54Speaker 01

  It had to go 12.

• 1:42:55David Imel?

That's what I'm saying. When you're putting, if you're doing a blind list, you're doing the next one, you have to just think of it in comparison to everything that could come after, but not the things you've already done.

• 1:43:04Speaker 02

I just want to let you guys know, before you do individual rankings, sitting on my desk, unused candies are Kit Kat, Reese's, Hershey's, and Twizzlers.

• 1:43:15Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:43:16David Imel?

  Heard that?

• 1:43:16Speaker 01

  You heard that?

• 1:43:17David Imel?

  The good stuff.

• 1:43:18Speaker 01

What we could have had was a good list, and they actively chose to make this a bad list.

• 1:43:23Speaker 02

When you're doing a blind ranking, there's two ways you can do it, right? Like, you can have your contestants fill up all the, the top ones really early, so then you gotta choose the good candies and force them to put it in the bottom. Or you can do what happened here, where you filled up the bottom really quick, and then let me just ruin your morning.

• 1:43:39Speaker 01

So in case you're wondering, I've been keeping track of all these candies and how I would have ranked them if this wasn't a blind ranking. So dots, one. Orange, fruit chew, it's not even, oh, tutsy, it is tutsy roll.

• 1:43:50Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:43:51Speaker 01

Orange tutsy roll, two, almond joy, three, laffy taffy, four, milk duds, five, baked beans, six, and then it's just all downhill from here. Fun dip, seven, cotton candy, buttons, ele, eight, dark chocolate, orange, nine, ooze tube, 10.

• 1:44:09Speaker 01

Tea gum, 11, and poison, 12.

• 1:44:13Andrew Manganelli?

You didn't even have the ooze tube, and it's still.

• 1:44:15Speaker 01

  Made it to ten.

• 1:44:17Andrew Manganelli?

That was based purely on Andrew's description. Yeah, I'm just, uh, I'm not gonna do my whole one. I'm just gonna say the only thing I think people will be upset about with Marquez is the chocolate orange.

• 1:44:26David Imel?

I don't know, man. I'll enjoy. I'm gonna go almond joy, number one. Um, the baked baked beans. Chocolate number two, no, baked beans, number two, chocolate, number three.

• 1:44:47David Imel?

  Milk duds, fun dip, dots.

• 1:44:53David Imel?

  I don't know, it doesn't matter, man.

• 1:44:56David Imel?

Ultimately, those are my top six, that's okay.

• 1:44:59Speaker 02

I think I should be rewarded for creating a candy list of which 16% was liquid. That's not easy.

• 1:45:08David Imel?

  It's pretty good.

• 1:45:09Andrew Manganelli?

In Marquez's world, this candy list is perfect because dots got to be number one on his list.

• 1:45:16David Imel?

  Trivia. This is the messiest.

• 1:45:18Speaker 02

  Spooky trivia.

• 1:45:23David Imel?

We may have to clarify the second question.

• 1:45:27Speaker 02

Guys, thin phones are in vogue right now, but they are not new. What phone released December, what phone released December 2014? Had a total thick, is it thickness or depth or?

• 1:45:42David Imel?

  Thickness.

• 1:45:43Speaker 02

Yeah, sure. Thickness, what had a total thickness of 4.8 millimeters?

• 1:45:55David Imel?

It's between two that I'm thinking of.

• 1:45:59David Imel?

But Adam said that the company was obvious, so.

• 1:46:03Speaker 04

If you're thinking around this time period, companies that do crazy.

• 1:46:07Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, what was the time again?

• 1:46:09Speaker 04

2014. December, so basically 2015, but 2014, whatever.

• 1:46:13Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay, I'm circling this.

• 1:46:14David Imel?

  Alright.

• 1:46:17David Imel?

  I put the Moto Z.

• 1:46:20Speaker 04

Ah crap, I think I got the name wrong.

• 1:46:22David Imel?

  Oh.

• 1:46:23Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:46:23Speaker 04

Oh, I put the Moto G Play.

• 1:46:26Speaker 01

I also put the Moto Z, but I'd crossed out what I thought it was before, which was the Huawei like P2 or something?

• 1:46:34David Imel?

I was thinking like the sharp Aquos. It's a sharp phone, right?

• 1:46:38Speaker 04

It is not, but close. That's more along the lines I was thinking of.

• 1:46:41David Imel?

  Oh.

• 1:46:42Speaker 02

The Moto Z is a great guess because that was only 5.2 millimeters thick, meaning you're only four millimeters off. The phone I was looking for was the Vivo X5 Max.

• 1:46:51David Imel?

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I did look that up a few weeks ago.

• 1:46:55Speaker 01

  That was obvious?

• 1:46:56Speaker 04

I thought Vivo would have been too obvious. That's why I wanted you to get the like actual name.

• 1:47:00Speaker 01

I guess they were more obvious in that sense, like 2017, 18, trying all the crazy stuff.

• 1:47:05David Imel?

Yeah. Moto Z was later, right?

• 1:47:09David Imel?

  I thought it was later.

• 1:47:10Speaker 01

Moto Z were upstairs. Moto Z was between 2015 and 2020.

• 1:47:15David Imel?

  Yeah. Alright.

• 1:47:16Speaker 04

Second question. Quick update on the score though. Marquez. Eight. Right behind Andrew, the skeleton with nine. And David fishing up the rear with five.

• 1:47:29David Imel?

  Really?

• 1:47:29Speaker 04

  Yeah, he got five.

• 1:47:30David Imel?

I thought it was like, whatever, okay.

• 1:47:33Speaker 04

Well, the answer to the second question, Ellis accidentally told our hosts in between breaks. So it was U-Torrent. Daniel Ek was briefly the CEO of U-Torrent. So I have another question.

• 1:47:46Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:47:46Speaker 04

  It's basketball related.

• 1:47:48Speaker 01

  Let's go.

• 1:47:48Speaker 04

But David, you can actually maybe get this, maybe? Andrew, maybe you could get this, maybe? The question is, which NBA superstar has a deal currently with Google?

• 1:48:01Speaker 01

  There's multiple answers.

• 1:48:02David Imel?

  Are there a ton?

• 1:48:03Speaker 04

  Fitbit.

• 1:48:04Speaker 07

I think we can accept any, any NBA superstar with a deal.

• 1:48:08Speaker 04

Well, the Google deal, there's one in particular that's super obvious that David will not get.

• 1:48:12David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:48:12Speaker 04

  There's another one that's

• 1:48:14David Imel?

Super obvious that I won't get.

• 1:48:16Speaker 04

More so that like he's the guy we've always been talking about as being this guy, but you wouldn't know him because he's like

• 1:48:21Andrew Manganelli?

I'm at that point, I remember.

• 1:48:23Speaker 04

You remember? I'll do both. Two po- mm, yeah, two points. Screw it.

• 1:48:27David Imel?

  So a deal's Google.

• 1:48:28Speaker 04

Already ahead. Yes. A deal with Google, the one I was looking for specifically was a deal with Fitbit. He's also a, an investor in a bunch of, no.

• 1:48:38Speaker 07

I don't know the answer to this question.

• 1:48:40Speaker 04

  Oh, nice. Okay, cool.

• 1:48:41Speaker 01

So you're supposed to put two answers?

• 1:48:42Speaker 04

Yes. But David, think about someone you would know. That is my hint to you.

• 1:48:46Speaker 07

  Currently plays.

• 1:48:48Speaker 04

Yep, currently in the league. There's two players.

• 1:48:53Speaker 01

  Have I met him before?

• 1:48:57Speaker 04

Maybe, actually, maybe. Or at least been in the same room with him. I don't know if you've met him.

• 1:49:03Speaker 01

  Tony Hawk?

• 1:49:05Speaker 04

  No.

• 1:49:06Speaker 01

I have met him like three times.

• 1:49:08Andrew Manganelli?

  He's a Formula One driver.

• 1:49:10Speaker 01

  Tony Hawk?

• 1:49:10Speaker 04

  Tony Hawk. Nice.

• 1:49:13Speaker 01

Look at him, I'm closing the cap.

• 1:49:15Speaker 04

  Yay!

• 1:49:16Speaker 01

  Thank you.

• 1:49:18Speaker 04

All right, Flip, him and Reed, what do we got?

• 1:49:22Speaker 04

Oh, who wants to go first?

• 1:49:24Speaker 01

  I wrote Kevin Durant.

• 1:49:27Speaker 04

  No, but good job.

• 1:49:28Speaker 01

Yeah. I just know that that's a basketball. And then Steph Curry.

• 1:49:33Speaker 04

  Steph Curry?

• 1:49:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:49:34Speaker 04

  Correct! There it is.

• 1:49:36Speaker 01

  Yeah, baby.

• 1:49:37Speaker 04

That's one point for David. Andrew, would you put?

• 1:49:40Andrew Manganelli?

  I put Giannis.

• 1:49:42Speaker 04

You got a point for that because that was the other one that we were thinking about. Giannis Antetokounmpo, the human alphabet.

• 1:49:46Speaker 01

I wrote down the three basketball players that I know of Google deals. I wrote Giannis Antetokounmpo.

• 1:49:51Speaker 04

  That is correct, one point.

• 1:49:52Speaker 01

  I spelled it.

• 1:49:54Speaker 04

  Wow!

• 1:49:55Speaker 01

I'm waiting for my point. I'm waiting for my point.

• 1:49:57Andrew Manganelli?

  You got it already.

• 1:49:58Speaker 01

  For spelling it.

• 1:50:01Speaker 01

  Uh, Steph Curry.

• 1:50:02Speaker 04

That is correct. You got another point for that.

• 1:50:04Speaker 01

  Kelsey Plum.

• 1:50:05Speaker 04

  WNBA.

• 1:50:06Speaker 01

  Correct.

• 1:50:07Speaker 04

  Did I say NBA?

• 1:50:08Speaker 01

Yeah, you probably did. So is Giannis the guy that got traded that everyone was freaking out about?

• 1:50:12Speaker 04

  No, that was Luca.

• 1:50:14Speaker 01

Yeah, it was Luca. All right, well, is still like burning from the toxic acid that we just said. All right, well, now this episode is done. We're gonna eat the rest of the good candy that you had in that bag over there. Kit Kats, did I hear? Twix?

• 1:50:27Speaker 04

  And Twizzlers and Hershey.

• 1:50:28Speaker 01

Reese's? He could have put Reese's.

• 1:50:30Speaker 04

Can I see what it is?

• 1:50:31Speaker 01

  In the top ten.

• 1:50:32Speaker 04

  And it's Reese's Pumpkins, right?

• 1:50:33Speaker 01

  No, it's just Reese's, man.

• 1:50:34Andrew Manganelli?

  Wait, there's pumpkin flavored Reese's?

• 1:50:36Speaker 04

No, there's the like holiday Reese's have the better ratio than regular Reese's.

• 1:50:40Speaker 01

Oh. Well, we're gonna eat those. We're gonna, we're gonna enjoy our lunch, of course. And thanks for sticking with us for Techtober. What comes next? Tech?

• 1:50:48David Imel?

  I think it's November.

• 1:50:50Speaker 01

Take of Ember. It doesn't roll off the tongue as well. So thanks for sticking with us for the one that does roll off the tongue. Well, unlike fun dip. Anyway.

• 1:50:57David Imel?

Yeah, it sticks to your tongue.

• 1:50:58Speaker 01

Catch you guys in the next video. Peace.

• 1:51:01Andrew Manganelli?

• 1:51:06Speaker 02

  Wait, can you do one?

• 1:51:07Andrew Manganelli?

I feel like I slurred all of those.

• 1:51:09Speaker 02

You say one where waveform was produced by a minion and a pirate.

• 1:51:12Andrew Manganelli?

Waveform was produced by a pirate and a minion. We were partnered with Vox Media Podcast Network and our traction music was created by Vansil.

• 1:51:28Speaker 02

Spotify, but when they bought you torrent, it was speculated.

• 1:51:31Andrew Manganelli?

Wait, did you just say the thing outside?

• 1:51:33Speaker 01

  Yeah, you did.

• 1:51:38Speaker 01

You totally did. David didn't hear it.

• 1:51:42Speaker 02

  It was finally me.

• 1:51:44Speaker 04

  New question.

• 1:51:45Speaker 02

  I'm sorry.

• 1:51:47Speaker 04

Can I bring us back in?

• 1:51:48Speaker 01

  You're a wizard. You're a wizard, Adam.

• 1:51:50Andrew Manganelli?

  He's a pirate, actually.

• 1:51:51David Imel?

  He's a pirate.

• 1:51:52Speaker 01

  I'm a pirate, actually, yeah.

• 1:51:55Speaker 06
