Meta’s AI Vision..for your Face!

This week, Marques, Andrew, and David have a ton to talk about. They start it off with experiences after using the new iPhones for a week before talking about the rumors that MacBooks might finally be getting a touchscreen. Then Marques updates everyone on all of the new features that YouTube announced. After that, it's all about the three new Meta glasses that were announced at Meta Connect. Of course, we wrap it all up with trivia. Enjoy! Support for the show comes from Jira by Atlassian. AI is only as useful as the context it has to work from. But when that context is scattered across tools, threads, and DMs, that means your team and your AI agents end up flying blind. That's the problem that Jira solves. What's the goal tied to your project? What got decided last week in Slack? Atlassian's teamwork graph pulls all these pieces together, from Jira, Confluence, Slack, GitHub, and more, so nothing falls through the cracks. With Jira, you can actually share that context with the AI agents you already use, like Claude, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot, assign them work directly, or connect your agents through MCP. Spend less time digging through endless links and DMs, less time chasing down what got decided and by who, and more time actually shipping. Learn more at jira.com.

  That's J-I-R-A dot com.

• 1:17Speaker 02

This question's either gonna be so easy that one of you accidentally blurts it out loud and I have to write a new question, or...

• 1:24Speaker 01

  Organic light emitting diode.

• 1:27Andrew Manganelli?

I knew that's what it was! I'm so happy you said it!

• 1:29Speaker 01

  Is it?

• 1:30Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, of course that's what it was!

• 1:32Speaker 01

No way, really? Oh, no. I thought there's no way that was actually... Define touchscreen.

• 1:42Speaker 01

Yo, what is up, people of the internet? Welcome back to another episode of the Waveform Podcast. We are your hosts. I'm Marques.

• 1:47Andrew Manganelli?

  I'm Andrew. And I'm David.

• 1:49Speaker 01

And it's Techtemper, which means we have plenty to talk about. That's how it usually goes. Let's see, we've got the latest meta event, and there's rumors that popped up really quickly of a new touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro, so we can talk about that. Also, some new YouTube features have been announced. We have more thoughts on the iPhone that we are currently reviewing, AKA several of them. And a Rivian e-bike. So we should start with, actually, you guys wanted to show me a video that I haven't seen yet.

• 2:16Andrew Manganelli?

  I did.

• 2:17Speaker 01

  I haven't seen it either.

• 2:17Andrew Manganelli?

We keep getting tagged in this iPhone review video on everywhere and on our subreddit and I think on Discord, but I just posted it in here.

• 2:25Speaker 01

  For a good reason?

• 2:25Andrew Manganelli?

For a good reason. Okay, so I only watched like the first two minutes, which is I think all we should watch here. But the production quality is wild and everyone keeps comparing it to us since we're kind of known as the production quality.

• 2:36Speaker 01

  I'm about to click it.

• 2:36Andrew Manganelli?

Team. I'll play it at the same time so David can watch and I want you two to describe what's going on. Cause the effects are pretty far out.

• 2:44Speaker 01

  I'm gonna click it.

• 2:45David Imel?

The thumbnail is a man holding the phones out. Okay, he does a pan up and then it moves. It's definitely a robot shot and then he stands up. Now it's another robot shot. Oh.

• 2:55Andrew Manganelli?

With like two screens showing sixty and a hundred hertz, twenty hertz with like a ping pong ball going by it.

• 3:00David Imel?

  Okay.

• 3:01Andrew Manganelli?

And then an iPhone Air that hits the ping pong ball to him.

• 3:04David Imel?

Oh, and he does a magic trick to turn the ping pong ball into the orange iPhone.

• 3:07Andrew Manganelli?

Now, watch this. It's on like a.

• 3:09David Imel?

  What the heck is this?

• 3:11Andrew Manganelli?

Spinning, almost like animation dial with all the phones from the first to the end.

• 3:15David Imel?

  Holy, wait, that's cool. Jeez.

• 3:19Andrew Manganelli?

And then so he spins it and all the phones of all the generations slowly capture in on like the camera, the back, the Apple logo, the front screen and goes through all of them. And then the whole thing just explodes.

• 3:30David Imel?

  Wow.

• 3:30Andrew Manganelli?

And the iPhone seventeen is floating in the air.

• 3:32Speaker 02

  That looks crazy.

• 3:33David Imel?

  That was crazy.

• 3:34Speaker 01

That was really well done. How much of, yeah, a lot of this is practical.

• 3:37David Imel?

They have the little rainbow thing. They've got their own.

• 3:39Andrew Manganelli?

  They do.

• 3:41Speaker 01

Oh, that bezel expansion was awesome.

• 3:43Andrew Manganelli?

  I'll stop there, but like.

• 3:44David Imel?

Yeah, they're making good use of the robot that they got.

• 3:47Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 3:48David Imel?

  It's pretty cool.

• 3:49Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, hold on, wait, we can hear that like a lot.

• 3:54Speaker 01

Well, yeah, this is, this is really good. This is good for YouTube. I've not seen this channel yet. It is not English, so I may have to use auto translate or something to watch it. That will make sense later. We're going to talk more about live translate later. But yeah, that is, that is awesome. I love seeing that on YouTube especially.

• 4:07Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay, new iPhones.

• 4:09Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 4:09Andrew Manganelli?

We're in our own studio. You guys have been using them now because the last time we talked, we were out at Apple and you had gotten the briefings, but we hadn't actually.

• 4:18Speaker 01

  Right, like use them.

• 4:18Andrew Manganelli?

  Use them, use them.

• 4:19Speaker 01

Yeah, so I, I went to go put my SIM card in it and then there was no SIM card tray, so I swapped over my eSIM and then I started using it.

• 4:26Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay.

• 4:27Speaker 01

I'm holding an iPhone Air right now. Can you tell it's blue?

• 4:29Andrew Manganelli?

  No.

• 4:30Speaker 01

  No, you can't.

• 4:31David Imel?

I feel like, yeah, it's like snow leopard blue.

• 4:35Andrew Manganelli?

  That's a very good descriptor.

• 4:37David Imel?

  Snow leopard means the animal?

• 4:39Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. Like it almost has like a cool tint or it's like it's white, but you slid the tint slider.

• 4:44David Imel?

Exactly, because snow leopards are like, they're white, but there's like a, there's like a cast from the, the snow that makes them look a little bluey. Because the sky.

• 4:53Speaker 01

  I've never heard that before.

• 4:53Andrew Manganelli?

I'm totally on David's wavelength in this one. I think it's a great descriptor.

• 4:57David Imel?

No, it is. We're on it today. This is maybe one and a half percent saturation.

• 5:02Andrew Manganelli?

It is. I think what David's basically saying is it's white, except that it looks like it's in a room that's blue.

• 5:07David Imel?

  That's right. Yeah.

• 5:09David Imel?

If you held it outside, the sky would reflect blue on it slightly.

• 5:12Speaker 01

See how it's, it's white on this table and it looks kind of blue. And then I put it over here where it looks kind of blue and now it looks white. So anyway, it's barely blue.

• 5:20David Imel?

  Copyright.

• 5:20Speaker 01

The number one question I've been getting, because I've been using the air, I think a lot of people who have been asking me about the phones have been asking me about the air. Should I get the air? I usually get the Pro, but should I get the air this time? And so Apple did the thing where they put the Pro chip in it and they have ProMotion and they're talking about the power of the Pro, but in an ultra-thin body. It is a really great phone to use in a vacuum, but it dies really fast, unfortunately. I, and it's not in a vacuum. You have to compare it to other available phones and other available phones have better features like an ultra-wide camera or a telephoto camera or a bigger, better battery. Are you taking a picture of me or selfie?

• 6:05David Imel?

I'm just trying out the 2X like.

• 6:07Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 6:08David Imel?

  The fusion camera.

• 6:10Speaker 01

Yeah. So in general, I have been enjoying this phone and using it and it's very pretty and very fun to hold. And I've been using it with no case and it's super nice, but unfortunately it has not lasted me a whole day yet.

• 6:22Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh.

• 6:22David Imel?

  Like at all?

• 6:23Speaker 01

  Not.

• 6:24Andrew Manganelli?

Well, so your first couple of days you said were most likely because of just like it's setting up the phone and downloading stuff, right? But.

• 6:31Speaker 01

So the first few days I had really bad, this always happens when I test new phones. It's like it's setting everything up. It's downloading all my like offline media like it usually does. It's logging into all my apps and everything's opening for the first time ever. So it's not like normal use. I think the first day I had like an hour and a half screen on time with 20% battery. So that's, that was obviously not how it's supposed to go, but now I've been like settling into it. Adaptive battery is on by default on all these phones, so it has been on on this phone. And now I'm getting up to the three and a half to four hours screen on time, dead at the end of the day type usage, which is. C minus, D plus, like not great levels of battery. And that also conveniently brings us to the accessories that like Apple's made it easy to

• 7:14Speaker 01

charge this phone. It has MagSafe still in G2 and then they have that battery that they made for the Air that you can pop it on the back, which brings it from the thinnest iPhone ever to the thickest iPhone ever. And then it charges it up roughly once. It's about the same size as the internal battery. I popped the Ridge battery bank on the back and that also did really well. That can charge it up two or three times, which is nice. But yeah, it's, I found myself, because I came from a pro, and this will be some other people's experience too, I went to go take a picture or something. I went to go switch the ultraride and there was none. Darn. I went to go watch a video that would have like nice stereo video and oh, there is no stereo audio. Darn. Oh, I want to, like there's a bunch of things that you forget that you don't have until you go to use.

• 7:55David Imel?

How does it sound with just a single?

• 7:58Speaker 01

It's honestly fine. It's fine until you think about it and then you realize the audio is only coming from one side. So if you watch a video in horizontal, all of the audio comes from the left side or from the earpiece side.

• 8:10Andrew Manganelli?

I want Ellis to buy this just so he has to live in hell every day.

• 8:14Speaker 02

I wish, I wish you guys could have been there when the iPhone X came out and me and all my audio friends were just turning our phones to the side and hearing it in stereo and being like, this is, this is the craziest thing.

• 8:27David Imel?

  We had that on Android.

• 8:28Speaker 02

  That was quite a while.

• 8:30David Imel?

Yeah. We had the boom sound. We got that boom sound.

• 8:33Speaker 01

Boom sound was pretty, pretty elite.

• 8:34David Imel?

  Boom, boom, boom.

• 8:35Speaker 01

  Pretty elite.

• 8:36David Imel?

  As they would say.

• 8:37Speaker 01

So I'm, I'm basically looking through this, this phone, I'm looking at this phone through the lens of what phone are you coming from? Because if you're coming from a phone with more features, you're gonna miss some stuff. But if you're coming from an older phone with less features, you might be cool with it.

• 8:52David Imel?

It would have to be a much older phone.

• 8:54Speaker 01

I'm thinking like 12 and 13. Like if you have a, let's say a 12 mini, for example.

• 9:00David Imel?

  I don't know anyone that still has a 12.

• 9:02Speaker 01

Well, just put, put the hypotheticals. Just like think of a person who happened to stumble into the trap and buy a 12 mini, right?

• 9:08David Imel?

  Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 9:08Speaker 01

So they already have horrible battery life. They already have a single camera.

• 9:13David Imel?

  If they were real.

• 9:14Speaker 01

Oh, no, you have dual cameras. So you have dual cameras.

• 9:16David Imel?

  It has two, yeah.

• 9:17Speaker 01

Um, they already have, they have a small screen. It's 60 hertz and they're, they don't have a whole ton of like, like big speakers or huge Pro Power chip or anything like that. If they move directly to the iPhone Air, they will think, whoa.

• 9:30David Imel?

  My battery's better.

• 9:30Speaker 01

Way better screen, battery life is a little better.

• 9:33David Imel?

  Uh huh.

• 9:34Speaker 01

Uh, ProMotion 120 hertz. They'll be missing one of your cameras, but they'll have way more power. They'll have a smoother phone and they'll feel like it's an upgrade.

• 9:42Speaker 05

We could still hypothetically do a battery percentage segment every week.

• 9:46Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, exactly. Hypothetically, of course, of course.

• 9:50Speaker 02

Does the phone get really hot?

• 9:52Speaker 01

Uh, that's one of the things I was thinking about. So in my normal bursty everyday use, no. Uh, I plan to do a test today to see if like long-term heavy use, which is the thing that the vapor chamber in the Pros is supposed to keep cool, if that makes this phone hot. But I have not tested that yet. That is a good question. I will know the answer by the end of today.

• 10:11Speaker 02

So hypothetically, this, you know, hypothetical 12 Mini user would also be like, ah, this phone's not really hot all the time.

• 10:17Speaker 01

Yeah, potentially. Yeah. I mean, I just, my current battery is, it's 11 a.m. I'm at 89%. That's, that's about as good of a morning as I've had with this phone.

• 10:27David Imel?

Pretty good because I'm at, I'm at 90% and I charged my phone in the car today.

• 10:32Speaker 01

  Yeah. So I.

• 10:34David Imel?

I'm on a Pro Max right now.

• 10:35Speaker 05

I'm at 79, but I woke up at 82, so.

• 10:37Andrew Manganelli?

Were you plugged in when you came into work today?

• 10:39Speaker 01

  Nope.

• 10:40Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay.

• 10:40Speaker 01

Yeah, I woke up with 100 at like 7:30. So lightweight use, but that's with only, uh, how much, I did CarPlay and the screen off the whole time. So I've only had 32 minutes of screen on time. So multiply that by 10, it's like three and a half hours. Yeah.

• 10:56Speaker 05

Ellis, what's your battery life right now?

• 10:58Andrew Manganelli?

  Hypothetically?

• 10:59Speaker 05

Hypothetically, if you were to have a 12 Mini.

• 11:02Andrew Manganelli?

Wait, your 12 Mini matches your La Croix.

• 11:06Speaker 01

That's the most Ellis thing that's ever happened on the podcast.

• 11:11Speaker 02

Come now. Yeah, what's your battery?

• 11:13David Imel?

Is it better than Marquez's? I'm guessing not.

• 11:15Speaker 02

  What'd you say yours was?

• 11:16David Imel?

  Eighty-nine. Yeah, definitely not.

• 11:18Speaker 02

  What do you think?

• 11:19Speaker 01

  It's probably lower.

• 11:20David Imel?

  I think it's probably lower.

• 11:21Speaker 01

  I think it's having a good day, sixty-eight.

• 11:22David Imel?

  Three.

• 11:24Speaker 02

  It's sixty-eight exactly.

• 11:25Speaker 01

  Is it really?

• 11:25Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 11:27David Imel?

  It's like the ideal temperature.

• 11:28Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 11:29Speaker 01

Yeah. I could agree with that.

• 11:31David Imel?

Okay, so we can now talk about at Apple Park, they brought us through a bunch of demos and one of the demos was that they were putting a bunch of pressure on the iPhone Air. They have this pressure chamber thing where they have this weight that they presses on the center of it and it puts all this force on it. And they made the air still have a titanium frame because they want it to be able to snap back to its like original position.

• 11:56Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 11:57David Imel?

Whereas I believe aluminum's a little softer. So they showed us all these demos and it made it seem like it was gonna be stable. Has that felt concerning to you at all? Because I mean, you're probably not the target demographic, but a lot of women put these phones in their back pockets.

• 12:13Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 12:13David Imel?

They're sitting on them all the time and it's kind of crunching them. What are your feelings on that?

• 12:17Speaker 01

So I'll give my official Jerry Everything prediction.

• 12:20David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 12:21Speaker 01

Everyone's waiting for this. We're recording this on Wednesday. Everyone's waiting for Zach.

• 12:24David Imel?

That video's gonna get ten million views.

• 12:25Speaker 01

No matter what happens, yeah, Zach tries to bend every phone fairly. He tries really hard. Oh, sorry, it's Thursday. My god.

• 12:33Speaker 01

It's Thursday as we record this, so he hasn't bent or tried to bend the air yet. But yeah, Apple, first they had us try to bend something ourselves. And it was measuring how much force we put through the phone. And the most I saw anyone put through it was a little over eighty-five pounds of force. And they said, that's you trying as hard as you can to bend something. You put eighty-five pounds of force through your hands to try to bend it. So then they put it on that machine and they put a hundred and thirty pounds of force through the middle in like a really small concentrated area. Your butt sitting on a phone is not the same as a small concentrated area, putting a hundred and thirty pounds through the middle. But let's say you really, really tried and you put a hundred and thirty pounds through the phone.

• 13:15Speaker 01

It did start to bend, then they released the pressure and the titanium frame bent back to flat.

• 13:21David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 13:22Speaker 01

And I've watched a couple of other interviews and a couple of instances of Apple executives talking about this phone when they get cornered and pressured and asked about it bending. They seem to always suggest it'll bend back. It'll go back to flat. So even if you put a ton of pressure through the phone, it'll go back to flat. So my prediction is Zach will on camera get the phone to visibly bend enough for a thumbnail, but it will bend back to flat. And that's what will happen. I don't worry about sitting on the phone and actually bending it in half. I have sat on it two or three times, but not on like a hard surface. So I haven't been at risk of bending it yet, but I suspect it's actually fine because Apple has lots of engineers that have thought many, many, many, many, many hours about this because this phone's number one concern is bending.

• 14:06Andrew Manganelli?

I think the most impressive part about one of those interviews was when, I think it was Jaws threw it to someone from like Tom's Hardware and he just doesn't catch it and it slams like face down on the table next to him. Cause he's like, try and bend it and just slams the table and that part of it being fine was kind of impressive.

• 14:24Speaker 01

You know, it's ceramic shield too on the front and the back. And Apple did have a slide in the keynote that said this was the most durable iPhone ever. They actually said that.

• 14:31Andrew Manganelli?

I'm assuming it will be the most durable because it will also be the least repairable if I had to guess.

• 14:36Speaker 01

That's a great question. I also have not seen any iFixit or teardowns or anything of this phone yet. It is rearranged on the inside and a lot of components are up in the top now and the most, most of the bottom is battery.

• 14:46David Imel?

Well, and that, so that begs the question in the, in the words of Marc Anthony, I need to know, I need to know, tell me, baby Marquez, cause I need to know.

• 14:54Andrew Manganelli?

Wow, I really appreciate that reference.

• 14:57David Imel?

  You're welcome.

• 14:58Andrew Manganelli?

  Good job.

• 14:59David Imel?

Is this worth the trade off of it being a little bit thinner? This is like, how do you feel about, what is the, is the thinness, you're, you're losing all this stuff.

• 15:08Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 15:09David Imel?

How do you feel about overall?

• 15:10Speaker 01

Uh, there's this phrase called the honeymoon period.

• 15:12David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 15:13Speaker 01

  Right?

• 15:14David Imel?

  I know it well.

• 15:15Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 15:16David Imel?

  So.

• 15:17Speaker 01

So in the world of larger and larger objects, when you make it thinner, you appreciate that thinness or that that size improvement more. So you could go as large as like appliances or cars or whatever. But even in like a laptop, when you go from a really thick laptop to a really thin laptop, you can appreciate that for a long time. And I think the smaller and thinner the object is, the faster the honeymoon period goes away. And so with this phone, I've really admired and appreciated how pretty it is. It's very thin and it's cool to hold. And every time, you know, for the past day or so that I've had it in public, people are like, oh, is that the Air? And I'm like, yeah, isn't it so pretty?

• 16:01Speaker 01

And then like it dies at 6:00 PM and I'm like, ah, I don't really care about it being thin anymore. Like you really, very quickly, within a week or two are kind of over how thin it is. Or you'll put a case on it, or you'll just, just go back to using it like a regular phone. And so I think there will be people who buy it because it's really thin and then they'll get over it and it'll just be a normal phone and they'll have to... The thing is, it's gonna be like annoying in two or three years when a battery dies even faster and you have to charge it even more often. That'll be kind of a bummer. But I think, yeah, the honeymoon period of wow, this phone's really pretty and slightly thinner than a regular iPhone, you kind of get over it pretty quickly.

• 16:41David Imel?

I think a very large percentage of the iPhone buying population just wants an iPhone. And so if they're able to get something that's nice and a little bit unique and pretty, they're gonna buy that. Yeah.

• 16:54Speaker 05

Why not just the base 17 if they just want an iPhone?

• 16:56David Imel?

Well, I was gonna say, because this is way prettier.

• 16:58Andrew Manganelli?

This is cooler and it's not, it's now cheaper than the Pro models. So like it is still flashy, fun iPhone for non-tech person, but you don't have to do Macs, Pro Max anymore.

• 17:10David Imel?

It's a way to get something different. And if you just want iOS because you want iMessage and you want FaceTime and you want, you know, all your apps, then there's gonna be a lot of people that buy this.

• 17:19Speaker 05

This one doesn't come in green.

• 17:20Andrew Manganelli?

That green is really good, seeing it in person.

• 17:24David Imel?

  Yeah, the green is amazing.

• 17:25Speaker 01

So we talked briefly about like the, the vacuum of this phone. Like it's a pretty good phone, but then you compare it to other phones. And the base iPhone 17 being such a good deal. And then the Pro iPhones, you know, this is the other thing when I review the Pros, like this phone being so thin, I feel like gave the Pro phones a green light to just.

• 17:46David Imel?

  Do whatever they want.

• 17:47Speaker 01

Go big, go thicker, do whatever, more battery.

• 17:49David Imel?

They're reminiscent of the MacBook Pros.

• 17:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 17:52David Imel?

  They're aluminum, they're thicker, yeah.

• 17:54Speaker 01

Yeah, so I think in the ladder now of Apple products of like base iPhone and then Air and then Pro and then Pro Max. The weird thing is if you tell people to skip the Air and you're like, hey, you have a base phone, but you want a bigger screen, you have to go all the way to Pro Max. Which is a pretty huge jump.

• 18:10David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 18:10Speaker 01

So I think there are people out there who see the base iPhone 17, they're like, I want a bigger screen. And then I see the bigger screen is the Air and I go, oh, but that one is one camera, worse battery, single speaker, all these other things. I guess I have to go all the way to Pro and they just walk themselves all the way up the ladder.

• 18:27David Imel?

I also have held that and like the screen size of 6.7 inches, right?

• 18:31Speaker 01

  It's 6.5.

• 18:32David Imel?

  6.5?

• 18:32Speaker 01

  But it's a big.

• 18:33David Imel?

That's a really nice middle ground.

• 18:34Speaker 01

  It's a big screen.

• 18:35David Imel?

It feels like a nice middle ground. The 6.9?

• 18:38Speaker 01

  The Pro Max.

• 18:39David Imel?

  Just is so frickin' big.

• 18:41Speaker 01

  It's huge.

• 18:41David Imel?

  I want something in between.

• 18:43Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 18:43David Imel?

I think ultimately it's going to come down to heart versus brain, right? It's like.

• 18:46Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 18:47David Imel?

Your brain, yeah, former function. Your brain is like, the base iPhone has everything I could ever want and it's cheaper and it's technically better in every way.

• 18:55Speaker 01

  It's literally a better phone.

• 18:57David Imel?

  But my heart.

• 18:59Speaker 01

Yeah, no, I think a lot of.

• 19:00David Imel?

  Sings for the air.

• 19:01Speaker 01

I think a lot of iOS users.

• 19:03David Imel?

  They're heart people.

• 19:04Speaker 01

  Yeah. It's that new new.

• 19:06David Imel?

  Weird to say, yeah.

• 19:07Speaker 01

  It's that new new.

• 19:08David Imel?

They're heart people. The Android people are like, give me the specs, baby.

• 19:12Speaker 01

I mean, in Android land, it's so easy to just go, why would you ever buy the Air?

• 19:15David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 19:16Speaker 01

It's clearly not the phone to get.

• 19:17David Imel?

  Of course.

• 19:17Speaker 01

  In brain land.

• 19:18David Imel?

  In brain land. Because people.

• 19:20Speaker 01

It's big brain time. Yeah, there's spec people and then there's just like, I just want the new iPhone. What are the three?

• 19:25David Imel?

And this is the prettiest new iPhone.

• 19:27Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 19:27David Imel?

  That's it.

• 19:28Speaker 01

  Yeah, fingerprint city.

• 19:29David Imel?

  Some thoughts about the Pro.

• 19:31Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 19:31David Imel?

I do like, I'm liking currently, this could be the honeymoon period. The unibody aluminum chassis.

• 19:39Speaker 01

  Very into it.

• 19:39David Imel?

Because it feels a lot like an old HTC phone to me.

• 19:42Speaker 01

  Whoa.

• 19:43David Imel?

That color. I love those phones.

• 19:45Andrew Manganelli?

Old HTC phone or like end of the life.

• 19:48David Imel?

Exactly. Like holding the sides of it, holding like feeling the back like I just know what the feeling of cold aluminum feels like.

• 19:55Speaker 01

  It's nice.

• 19:55David Imel?

It reminds me of that a lot. And so that that's kind of just, it's a small thing, but it's it's nice. Um, I did like a couple of people that I've been hanging out with are like, they didn't even notice that this was the new one. And they're like, are they sending you the new one? And I'm like, the one right there, like right next to me. And they're like, oh, can I see it? Can I see it? And I hand it to them and they're they they're scrolling around and they're like, oh, it's the same. I'm like, yeah.

• 20:16Andrew Manganelli?

  It's an iPhone.

• 20:17David Imel?

It's an iPhone. I don't know what to tell you. And then they just hand it back and then they're over it. So. Um.

• 20:22Speaker 02

I showed someone the plateau and I was like, check it out. They they changed it and they're like, oh.

• 20:29Andrew Manganelli?

I think the, can I see yours real quick?

• 20:30David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 20:30Andrew Manganelli?

Just because I, okay, the the Apple logo is much easier to see on this. The orange one, it feels kind of tough to see sometimes when the light's hitting the like glass back.

• 20:39David Imel?

Um, I've also gotten pretty used to the look of the plateau on the Pro and I think it looks pretty good, pretty decent.

• 20:45Speaker 01

Small underrated thing, the the way you hold your phone, the plateau on the back. I for so many years on Android phones, I've been using it to hold the phone.

• 20:54David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 20:55Speaker 01

And so it feels more natural to to hold the phone with the plateau on the iPhone now too. I like that about it.

• 21:01David Imel?

  Definitely.

• 21:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 21:02David Imel?

That's pretty much it though. I mean, the cameras, I'm glad they're all 48 megapixels. They told me that they have a re-engineered pipeline for the the crop modes where they use the 12 megapixel in the center of the sensors. And then it should be much higher quality. Dave 2D put out a video about this and it looked much higher quality. He also did a bunch of camera samples versus the 16 Pro and the skin tones are way better, like across the board. They looked very washed out on the 16 Pros for the 17 Pros. One thing I have noticed is a lot of my photos come out a little bit overexposed. Uh, and it sort of feels like because they make the sensors bigger every year, they just keep forgetting to like retool. How much light is coming in versus how much they should process it. And so they're, everything is really bright.

• 21:46Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 21:46David Imel?

So just straight up camera, no changes. Everything's a little overexposed for me right now, but I'm sure that'll.

• 21:51Speaker 01

You gotta use camera control to dial in your look.

• 21:55Andrew Manganelli?

Look, they put it on the top now.

• 21:56David Imel?

They're gonna start calling this the visual intelligence button, mark my words. Yeah, cuz they didn't.

• 22:02Andrew Manganelli?

Or the button that never existed. No, just completely nix it and never speak of it again.

• 22:06Speaker 01

We should take bets on waveform on when that button goes away.

• 22:09David Imel?

It'll go away, for sure. There's too many things on the side of this phone at this point.

• 22:13Speaker 01

  iPhone 18 is still there?

• 22:15David Imel?

  Uh, on the fold?

• 22:17Speaker 01

  On this next 2026 iPhone.

• 22:19David Imel?

It'll still be there next year.

• 22:20Speaker 01

  What about iPhone 19?

• 22:21David Imel?

  19. Either 19 or 20.

• 22:23Speaker 01

  I think it's gone by 19.

• 22:24David Imel?

  I would say 19.

• 22:25Andrew Manganelli?

I would probably guess 19 also.

• 22:27David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 22:27Andrew Manganelli?

  I'll go 18.

• 22:28David Imel?

  Alright.

• 22:29Andrew Manganelli?

  I think it's there forever.

• 22:30David Imel?

And you know what they'll do? They'll take it away and they'll be like, with that space.

• 22:33Speaker 01

  We may.

• 22:34David Imel?

Fifty more million hours of battery.

• 22:37Andrew Manganelli?

  That's exactly what they'll say.

• 22:38David Imel?

Uh, I would say that the, the front-facing square sensor has been a hit for a lot of people.

• 22:42Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 22:42David Imel?

I show that to some people and they're like, that's such a cool feature, that's so amazing.

• 22:45Speaker 01

  Everyone should copy.

• 22:47Andrew Manganelli?

  It's so good.

• 22:47David Imel?

Yeah, everyone should copy, and they will.

• 22:48Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 22:49David Imel?

  Don't worry.

• 22:49Speaker 01

Yeah. Who's first to copy that?

• 22:52David Imel?

  Oppo.

• 22:53Speaker 01

Same song. Yeah, Oppo moves fast. It's gonna be like Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo.

• 22:57David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 22:57Speaker 01

Fair. Also, a new Apple rumor, and this came up on my timeline and it was just like immediately corroborated everywhere, which is, next MacBook Pros will have touchscreens, OLED touchscreens.

• 23:07David Imel?

  Is it the Pros?

• 23:08Speaker 01

  Yeah, MacBook Pros.

• 23:10David Imel?

  That's interesting.

• 23:11Speaker 01

  That is.

• 23:12Andrew Manganelli?

And by next, you mean next year?

• 23:14Speaker 01

Next year's MacBook Pros, like M5.

• 23:16Andrew Manganelli?

Assuming if there is another one out this year.

• 23:18Speaker 01

M5 or M6, maybe M6, but it looks like next year we're, we're expecting, because all the rumors are seeming to agree now, that there will be an OLED, uh, incel touchscreen MacBook Pro.

• 23:28Andrew Manganelli?

  Oncel.

• 23:29Speaker 01

  Oncel.

• 23:30Andrew Manganelli?

  Say incel.

• 23:31Speaker 01

Oncel. I said incel, meaning I-N space cel, but on space cel is the correct term.

• 23:38David Imel?

  Got it.

• 23:38Speaker 01

Uh, that's just the tech that incorporates the sensors in the top layer of the OLED. Yeah, I don't know if I want that. I know a lot of people who have been expecting it and asking it because of how powerful, uh, iPads have gotten and how much that experience seems to overlap with MacBook Pros. I use the touchpad, which is really great, and I don't think I.

• 23:57David Imel?

If they were able to develop some sort of like anti-smudge technology.

• 24:02Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 24:02David Imel?

To put on the display, because I used to use. A lot of Surface Pro devices. I had a Surface Book. I was like so hyped on the first Surface Book and then I bought the two and I bought the three. And I really liked it for Photoshop because being able to sort of just like zoom in by pinching on the area you need. It's very handy and like panning around the screen. I really liked that. But now that I use a MacBook Pro most of the time, it, the screen already gets so dirty that I'm like, do I need it to be even more dirty? And so, you know, I don't know. If it was just there as a feature, they'll probably figure out some interesting implementation of adding a touchscreen, like something that actually makes it better, I would hope.

• 24:43Speaker 01

Yeah, the OS, well, first of all, the OS has looked like it's been ripe for a touchscreen support for a little while now.

• 24:49David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 24:50Speaker 01

I will also throw in that I was very impressed with the Nano Texture iPad. Because it looks really good and it's a matte display and it also seems to be durable enough and doesn't get a ton of fingerprints. So if they can do something like that for the MacBook Pro, because my MacBook Pro is Nano Texture, but doesn't seem to be.

• 25:09David Imel?

  It's a lot of fingerprints.

• 25:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 25:11David Imel?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 25:11Speaker 01

  Fingerprints.

• 25:12David Imel?

I could definitely see like, cause there's the notification center where you can just, if you were just able to tap that with your thumb, it could be quicker.

• 25:17Andrew Manganelli?

There's, I feel like if you use one for long enough, when I was using Surface stuff also, I didn't care. And then I slowly started realizing small times that I would use it. And then I came to my MacBook and I was just touching the screen all the time. Nothing was happening.

• 25:30David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 25:31Andrew Manganelli?

It's really, even just like sitting right here sometimes, you can just like have your thumb and like swipe around on the page.

• 25:36David Imel?

  Scroll around.

• 25:36Andrew Manganelli?

  And like scroll for things.

• 25:37David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 25:38Andrew Manganelli?

On a plane or a train or something, that would be nice, just reading articles. It's.

• 25:41David Imel?

  It would.

• 25:42Andrew Manganelli?

And it's, there's nothing, it doesn't take away from the.

• 25:45David Imel?

  That's true.

• 25:45Andrew Manganelli?

Your regular experience. I feel like they should add it because it's a feature that doesn't hurt.

• 25:49Speaker 02

I, when I was, when I was a teacher, I had a lot of students, and this actually happened to me on my first college or high school laptop. Um, which had a, was a Windows with a touchscreen. And I don't think it's all happened to a MacBook, but when you said it doesn't take away. When that touchscreen breaks and you're trying to scroll, you know, move your cursor around the screen and it keeps jumping to random points and then you have to go into the settings and disable the touchscreen while the cursor is going boing, boing, boing, boing. That, that is, that is, that is.

• 26:19Andrew Manganelli?

Assuming you're someone who takes care of your computer, that hopefully won't happen.

• 26:23Speaker 01

They said those were like school computers, right?

• 26:25Speaker 02

No, these were just like Windows laptops that cost under $2,000. So they were destined to. Destined to, I shouldn't say that. I'm sorry.

• 26:35David Imel?

They really just need to make the touchpad accessible with the Apple pencil. Like at some point. That would actually be awesome. It's the size of a small Wacom tablet already. If they just gave it Apple pencil support, then you wouldn't need to make it a touchscreen. I've tested many laptops with touchscreens over the past few years and I never use the touchscreen with my hands. Like all the service laptops, all these other laptops, I'm aware that I can do it. I just, the touchpoints are small enough that I just hit it with the cursor every time. Maybe I'm old school.

• 27:03Andrew Manganelli?

I bet if you had it for long enough, I bet if this laptop had it and you were just using it every day, you would slowly start to find times where it's like, just a nice little extra thing.

• 27:12David Imel?

I really liked it in Photoshop.

• 27:15Speaker 02

I used the touchscreen on my Asus Zen Book Fold 17. I think I got that right.

• 27:22David Imel?

  The one last year?

• 27:23Speaker 02

No, the one for like four years ago. But I like that. It's the one that, that, that, that it sandwiches its own keyboard.

• 27:32David Imel?

That was like two years ago.

• 27:32Speaker 02

  And it has an easel.

• 27:33David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 27:34Speaker 02

You know what I'm talking about?

• 27:35David Imel?

  Yeah. Oh, Zen, yeah.

• 27:36Speaker 02

Yeah, that thing is kind of fun. I like that. And I actually use that with the touchscreen.

• 27:41Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, that one.

• 27:42Speaker 02

Yeah, it sucks. It's like the worst computer ever, but.

• 27:44Andrew Manganelli?

But that's, that's like different. That's because it's like not a computer. It's more like a folding tablet that has a.

• 27:49David Imel?

Yeah, it's a tablet that turns into a.

• 27:51Speaker 02

Yeah, it's a tablet that runs Zoo Tycoon 2 because it still has DirectX support.

• 27:56David Imel?

  Hell, yeah.

• 27:58David Imel?

Okay, well, I hope to see that eventually. We'll see. There, there are a lot of rumors of another Apple event happening in the next like number of months.

• 28:07Andrew Manganelli?

In, in this article, they seem to think, Gorman and Quo both think the, uh, the like base MacBook with the iPhone chip in it are going to come out Q4 2025.

• 28:18David Imel?

  The 13 inch or whatever.

• 28:19Speaker 05

That's the one I'm waiting for. Okay.

• 28:20David Imel?

It's gonna be incredible. I need something super small and light. That'd be great. I alternate, really. I'm always like, I need it.

• 28:27Andrew Manganelli?

  Maximalist.

• 28:28David Imel?

  Wait, I need the 16.

• 28:30Speaker 01

I'm, I hate that I sometimes have to edit on my laptop because if I didn't, I'd have such a thin and light laptop.

• 28:36David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 28:37Speaker 01

But for the one or two times every year that I need the power, I can't not have this. I'm really glad I switched from the 16 to 14. I will say that.

• 28:46David Imel?

  Hmm.

• 28:46Speaker 01

I'm very glad about that. For those who were wondering on the podcast, I was very torn.

• 28:50David Imel?

  Interesting.

• 28:50Speaker 01

I did the 14. No regrets.

• 28:52David Imel?

  Interesting.

• 28:52Speaker 01

Yeah. All right. Um, do we want to quickly talk about this mid on YouTube event before we take it to break or?

• 28:58David Imel?

Ooh, how much, should I limit how much I have to say on this?

• 29:02Andrew Manganelli?

Probably. They released 30 features. Can you name five? Speedrun.

• 29:07Speaker 01

  I can.

• 29:08Andrew Manganelli?

  Your five favorites.

• 29:09Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 29:09Andrew Manganelli?

  In a speedrun.

• 29:10Speaker 01

Okay. So the TLDR is YouTube had their own event, which was kind of just like a tech event where they invited a bunch of people. A bunch of them were YouTube creators, but also a bunch of them were journalists. I happened to ride the line and be covering it also using the features. So it was cool to be there. And they had executives on stage and they talked over 30 new features coming to YouTube. So basically new products for us to use and then demo them and gave us, you know, a little how to on, on what they, they will do. And some of them are rolling out quickly. Some of them are rolling out later. Some of them are really cool. Some of them are absolutely useless to me and hopefully won't spell the end of humanity. Okay. So here's my, some of my favorites.

• 29:48Andrew Manganelli?

  Where's this going?

• 29:48Speaker 01

Some of my favorites are dynamically inserted mid roll ads. Could be very interesting.

• 29:54Andrew Manganelli?

Please explain yourself because that sounds terrible.

• 29:56Speaker 01

So right now on YouTube, there's a couple of different types of ads. There are the AdSense ads, like the pre-rolls and the post-rolls and the pop-up ads that you guys have seen on YouTube. And then there's also mid-roll ads, which is I'm watching YouTube video and then boom, a mid-roll pops up and plays and then goes away. And then comes back to the video, right? Those are all supported and have been around for a while. Then there are the ads that a creator will bake into the video themselves and it's burned in forever. It's like, hey, this video was brought to you by, and that lives in the video forever. So as of right now, creators have only had one way to structure deals around that type of ad, which is you can pay me

• 30:36Speaker 01

to get in front of my audience and it will live, no matter how many views this video gets, it will live in the video forever. Some people are like doing performance incentives or like number of views incentives or whatever, but basically it lives forever. This new dynamically inserted mid-roll feature will allow creators to have a burned-in video ad that can go away, or be replaced, or move to another video, or be across their whole channel, or whatever, and have many more dynamic ways of structuring deals around that type of thing. You can be a mid-roll in my video for the first month, and then it goes away. Or you can be a mid-roll for the first year, and then it goes away.

• 31:17Andrew Manganelli?

And you're saying that's something that we would still record. It would still be Marquez doing the ad spot, correct? And then, but it could be in and out. It's like not baked into the video, it's baked into a ad slot. Almost like podcasts. Like what we do, how we do it here. We record our ads, but they're dynamically inserted and can't get changed.

• 31:34Speaker 01

Yeah, exactly. This is so in the audio world of podcasts, when you hear a two-year-old podcast, but it has a one-week-old ad in it, that's what's happening, is their entire catalog is getting dynamically inserted ads. And that's something you could theoretically do with YouTube videos with this feature. So that's pretty cool. That's a thing that will matter in the podcast world for us, and probably in other main channel videos, and we can try this stuff out. But that, I think, is really powerful. So that's on top of my list. Auto-dubbing with lip sync, this is really interesting. We know about auto-dubbing, which is AI making a voice that sounds kind of like my voice, but in different languages. It will also adjust my face in the video to look like it's saying

• 32:16Speaker 01

the words in the different language. And I got a demo of it, and it looked really good. I don't know how well this will work for different types of videos.

• 32:25Andrew Manganelli?

I so bad want to see what the lips would do with the French dub that we had a couple of days.

• 32:32Speaker 01

It just opens all the way. Yeah, that, so, you know, it's great for the demo that I got was just like a clean talking head video. So it's just a guy talking to a camera. So of course it knows which mouth to move to make the language match. But how will it work if I'm cutting back and forth between B-roll, or if there's two people on camera? I have no idea how that works. But it seemed cool. So that's another one.

• 32:52Andrew Manganelli?

  All right.

• 32:53Speaker 01

Collaborations. You've seen a post on Instagram where both creators get publishing credit. Similar on YouTube. It will go to all the subscribers of one of the channels, but it will get recommended to the viewers of all of the channels involved in the collaboration. That's pretty cool.

• 33:07David Imel?

And is revenue based on who drove the traffic?

• 33:11Speaker 01

I think revenue is split between the creators and/or/or I think also, I think this is something they're gonna let you choose, but also you can choose who to share analytics of the video with. So you can share analytics with, if it's a brand partner collab, or if you wanna share it with everyone who is a collab, everyone can see the analytics in their studio. So that's pretty cool. And then there's also things that we have already been testing, like A, B, C thumbnail and title testing. And likeness detection, which I think I've described on here already?

• 33:39David Imel?

  No.

• 33:40Speaker 01

  Have I not?

• 33:41David Imel?

  Ah, or I spaced out.

• 33:43Speaker 01

Oh, likeness detection. So you know how there's the copyright ID system on YouTube, where there's like hashes where YouTube auto detects like a part of a song and can go around and autonomously bring them to a hub for the copyright owner to do what they want with? Similar thing, but for AI recreations of my likeness. So YouTube has scanned my channel, knows what my likeness is, and I have flipped into this tool on occasion and just scrolled through. It's mostly people re-uploading my video, but if anyone ever made an AI recreation of my likeness, it would show up in here and I could take action on that.

• 34:17David Imel?

What about like commentary? Like if someone is like showing a video and they're reacting to it and talking about that video?

• 34:24Speaker 01

That's fine. That's like a weird like byproduct is those videos also show up in this tool because it's my likeness also.

• 34:30David Imel?

If you were to like flag it, do they get in trouble?

• 34:33Speaker 01

Uh, that would be an abuse of the system. You should, it's kinda like copyright ID. Like you should not misuse this tool.

• 34:40David Imel?

  Wow.

• 34:41Speaker 01

But it will be aggregating all of the instances.

• 34:44David Imel?

Universal music group would have something to say about that.

• 34:47Speaker 01

Well, you know, YouTube's supposed to be on top of that, but.

• 34:49David Imel?

  Yeah, okay.

• 34:51Speaker 01

It varies. Then there are some also potential doomsday level features that, you know, they kinda, it's YouTube and it's a product and it feels like they have to do this, but like. Vio being baked into YouTube shorts. Where now if you just, if you give it access to your camera roll and give it like your last three videos in your camera roll, it will like make a short with a voiceover in whatever style you want of what's happening.

• 35:21Andrew Manganelli?

So like, like you're doing this stuff on video and it's like commentating for you?

• 35:25Speaker 01

Yeah, the example they gave was like you have six or seven videos of you following a recipe and making cookies. And you tell it, like here's the six videos and you go make this a video with Vio and it will go, "Hi, I'm making a video of me making these cookies."

• 35:41Andrew Manganelli?

Wait, does it use your voice?

• 35:43Speaker 01

  It's AI-generated voice. Yeah. I didn't love that one.

• 35:46David Imel?

  I'm gonna die.

• 35:47Andrew Manganelli?

  It's just so boring.

• 35:49Speaker 01

  Yeah, I don't know.

• 35:50David Imel?

Let's keep adding slop to the internet, my guys.

• 35:52Speaker 01

The value proposition, the value prop was that this is like, not really.

• 35:59Andrew Manganelli?

This feels like one of those things where like, there is none. Like not best an accessibility feature. Like if somebody has a speech issue or something like that and they want to do cooking things, then have something else dub it for them. Like you could pay someone to do that. It's just like the robot voice on TikTok where like, if you don't want to talk, you just have the voice do it. Yeah. It's just that without having to type the script, I guess.

• 36:20Speaker 02

I really want to make videos, but I just hate making videos. What are you talking about?

• 36:24Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 36:25David Imel?

We're democratizing the video making process.

• 36:28Speaker 02

So people who don't want to do it can do it? Like what?

• 36:30Speaker 01

Yeah. Yeah, some of these features really felt like, I hope people don't use it, you know? Are you seeing?

• 36:36Andrew Manganelli?

Sorry, no, sorry. Tim just posted this. Also, shout out, we posted a bonus episode yesterday. That's really fun. It's Ellis and I pretty much talking live at the Apple event and then Mark has and David come in at the end.

• 36:48Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 36:48Andrew Manganelli?

But Tim just saw it next to a trailer for Now You See Me, Now You Don't and it looks like exactly the same.

• 36:57Speaker 01

By the way, shout out to the Now You See Me movies. Those movies are really good.

• 37:00Andrew Manganelli?

  Are they?

• 37:01Speaker 01

Shout out to all the people that came to talk to us while we were sitting on the Apple.

• 37:04Andrew Manganelli?

Also, we have more views than the Now You See Me, Now You Don't trailer.

• 37:09Speaker 05

Very good. Okay, um, more world ending events. What's the next world ending event?

• 37:13Speaker 01

Um, you know, I think all of the AI generated stuff, like there were, like, you could give it some video and it would turn that into a song and then you could use, I don't know. I didn't, I didn't pay too much. I kind of spaced out at the AI stuff. Like, it didn't seem very useful. I would never use it, but maybe somebody will.

• 37:31Speaker 05

This is like Mad Libs use of AI. It's just like, put a bunch of verbs and nouns and then make an AI generator that does that.

• 37:38Speaker 01

Yeah. But then that has some interesting features for live streamers as well. Obviously, live streaming is huge. A lot of people are doing it on Twitch or like multi-platform. So they have some things where like, it will auto generate shorts from highlights of your live stream. So a lot of people pay people to do that right now, but it will detect what the highlights are and make shorts for you based on that. You can also, you will be able to stream horizontally and vertically at the same time. So you're discoverable in the shorts feed, but then you're also doing a whole live stream, which is cool. Side by side ads and a stream. So you don't miss all the action, but you can do mid-rolls without having stuff disappear. Um, and then one maybe interesting one, maybe not, but we'll see, is an assistant built into YouTube Creator Studio

• 38:21Speaker 01

that's trained on all of your stuff and all the analytics performance that you can ask for ideas for your next videos.

• 38:28Speaker 05

They've done, didn't they kind of have that already? It wasn't an assistant, it was like a tab that would be like, these could be some new and it was always just like,

• 38:36Speaker 01

It was called Inspiration. It would give you clickable, yeah, this one's a full-on chatbot experience where you talk to it and you're like, can you summarize the comments on my last two videos? And then you can ask it, what should I, what should I do on my next video? And give me a title suggestion and you can chat with it and it'll talk to you through your, it's trained on just your channel, which could be cool, maybe.

• 38:55Speaker 05

I have a Google Sheet of all of our like past episodes with all the stats and numbers and everything there. And in Google Sheets, they've had this like little Gemini assistant thing and it does have like some interesting prompts. It'll be like, do you want me to find the outliers of your top five best performing or worst performing episodes? And I'm like, sure, yeah. And it does it. It's pretty cool. So like if they could bring that to YouTube Studio, I wouldn't be mad at that.

• 39:20Speaker 01

Yeah, I think that'd be cool.

• 39:21Speaker 05

  Yeah, so we'll see.

• 39:23Speaker 01

We'll see if it understands what I, what I ask it when I say, tell me outliers from September of every year for the last 10 years. And it has no idea what I'm asking. We'll see though.

• 39:32Speaker 05

  All right.

• 39:32Speaker 01

But yeah, YouTube, lots of new features and lots of AI doomsday level slop. Love slop. All right.

• 39:41David Imel?

  We should.

• 39:41Speaker 01

  Slop.

• 39:45Speaker 01

  We are not slop.

• 39:48Speaker 01

That's not the transition we needed.

• 39:51Speaker 02

So I was reading the VO Terms of Service, you know, just, uh, just things that

• 39:54Speaker 05

  A little light reading.

• 39:56Speaker 02

Yeah, a little light reading. Guys, we talked about a rumor. A rumor about a MacBook. A rumor about a MacBook that has an OLED screen. This question's either gonna be so easy that one of you accidentally blurts it out loud and I have to write a new question, or

• 40:13Speaker 01

  Organic light emitting diode.

• 40:15Speaker 05

I knew that's what it was. I was so happy.

• 40:19Speaker 05

Yeah, of course, that's what it was.

• 40:20Speaker 01

No way. Oh, no. I thought there's no way.

• 40:24David Imel?

  Define touchscreen.

• 40:26Speaker 05

You know, I knew it because during the bonus pod, we were talking about something and Ellis just started going at me about what does modem stand for in front of some guy I'd never met before. I was like, this is just gonna be

• 40:37Speaker 01

That's my bad. That's really my bad.

• 40:39Speaker 05

  Okay, okay. New question.

• 40:41Speaker 01

  Oh, okay.

• 40:42Speaker 05

All right, so in the next section, we're gonna be talking

• 40:44Speaker 01

I'm just not gonna say anything now.

• 40:45Speaker 05

Yeah, no, no. No, no one speak. In the next section, we're gonna be talking about Facebook. So, one point per founder. Can you name the other founders besides Mark Z?

• 40:56Speaker 01

  Okay, yeah, I'm ready.

• 40:57Speaker 05

Yeah, yeah. No, no, don't say it.

• 40:59Speaker 01

  No, don't say anything.

• 41:00Speaker 05

  No.

• 41:01Speaker 01

  Spider-Man.

• 41:05Speaker 01

Think about who you think founded Facebook. Recall the faces and names

• 41:10David Imel?

  Of the book.

• 41:11Speaker 01

Answers will be at the end like usual. We'll be right back.

• 41:27Speaker 00

• 43:27Speaker 01

All right, welcome back. Let's talk about the Meta event that happened this week as well, because tech timber just will not stop.

• 43:35David Imel?

Let's talk about the Meta event that happened this week as well, because the tech timber will just not stop.

• 43:38Speaker 01

Let's talk about the Meta event that happened this week.

• 43:41Andrew Manganelli?

  What comes first?

• 43:43Speaker 01

What comes first? Meta. What do I do first?

• 43:46Andrew Manganelli?

  What do I do first?

• 43:47Speaker 01

Meta. What do I do first?

• 43:49David Imel?

  Yeah, we'll talk about it.

• 43:50Speaker 01

Here's what happened. Meta had an event where they announced all of the latest from their AI smart glasses lineup.

• 43:57Speaker 01

And the event itself was pretty brutal to watch. The products are actually kinda interesting. And what happened was I went out there to Menlo Park, I was just there yesterday, as of the day of recording, and I got demos of all the products, I got to try them, I got to form my own opinions on them. I had a lot of interesting thoughts and I had some conversations as well with people who worked on them, and I came away thinking, wow, they are really moving quickly on this stuff. We had that Orion demo less than a year ago, and they were like, these are too expensive to ship, but this is what it could look like in the future. And now suddenly we're actually getting to buy, for $7.99, a Meta Ray-Ban display, which has a single, really high-res, 5000 nit display on the right side with the wave

• 44:42Speaker 01

guides, and it will show things to you in the glasses that nobody else can see. And that's a real thing that's happening. I thought that was pretty fast. And then you watch the event, and they, to their credit, tried to do a lot of live demos. That's really hard to do, in general, in a tech world, especially with new unreleased stuff, and with this stuff with all the wifi in the room and with the internet not being very good, and with a buggy product in general. Allegedly. Yeah, it was really, really tough to watch, because it didn't work, and I kept hammering it home and trying over and over again, and it was clear that it was live, to their credit, but it was very poorly demoed onstage. So I came away thinking, the delta in how I feel about the product with just my hands-on

• 45:27Speaker 01

experience versus the event was colossal. So there's basically three new glasses products that we can go over. There is the Ray-Ban display, but there's also an Oakley collab called the Vanguard, and then just the second gen of the Ray-Ban Metas. Probably easiest to just start there. You guys have seen the Ray-Ban Metas, right? Yeah. You guys like them?

• 45:47David Imel?

Um, I think that they are more functional than people anticipated originally because the video quality is actually very good and people have used it for a lot of POV stuff. And I know a number of normies that actually use it for POV stuff.

• 46:01Speaker 01

Sure, that is exactly what I was hoping you'd say because the only thing people actually use these glasses for is the camera.

• 46:08David Imel?

  Is POV videos.

• 46:09Speaker 01

Yeah. Um, the other thing you can use them for is to listen to music or talk to the Meta AI or have it look at your world and answer questions about your world or even be if you have a visual impairment, it can be your eyes and describe what it's seeing. There's lots of other functionality, but the main thing that people use it for is POV because it's a camera on your face.

• 46:29David Imel?

  Unfortunately, only vertical video.

• 46:31Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 46:32David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 46:32Speaker 01

So the second generation of this gets longer battery life and gets a better camera, 3K videos up to 60 FPS. And it has a couple of extra features like conversational focus mode, which as you're talking to someone will use the beam forming mics to boost the volume of that dialogue into your ears, which is cool.

• 46:52David Imel?

  Which is nice.

• 46:52Speaker 05

This is the coolest thing I think that they had at the whole frigging event.

• 46:56Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 46:56Andrew Manganelli?

Assuming you're in a loud scenario.

• 46:58Speaker 05

Or even just for people who are hard of hearing. Like, that is so clutch.

• 47:02Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 47:02David Imel?

I will say my brain has trouble when I'm in a loud environment and I'm trying to talk to somebody, like distinguishing all the noises and I can get really overwhelmed pretty easily if there's like tons of different audio sources coming at me. So if it was easier to focus on one, I think that would help me.

• 47:16Andrew Manganelli?

Did you get to test this?

• 47:17Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 47:18Andrew Manganelli?

I think that's the idea. Cause I was gonna say like, I'm interested in the input lag between it and then like hearing the voice and hearing it through. It's not, they're not bone conduction, right? They're just a speaker kind of above the ear.

• 47:29Speaker 01

  Yep. Yep.

• 47:30David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 47:30Speaker 01

  So I think.

• 47:31David Imel?

  Right into your ear canal.

• 47:31Speaker 01

Yeah, these are gonna be the same price, they're gonna look the same, they just have upgraded internals and will do that and have longer battery life. So that's all good.

• 47:37David Imel?

  And they're available now.

• 47:38Speaker 01

  Those are right away.

• 47:39David Imel?

  379.

• 47:40Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 47:40David Imel?

  Cool.

• 47:41Speaker 01

Okay. Then they have the Oakley Vanguard collab, which is like even more sports focused version. They moved the camera, which is still the new 3K camera, to the middle between your eyes and it's this Oakley like wraparound sunglasses look with a bunch of different colors.

• 47:56David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 47:57Speaker 01

They look kinda sick sometimes, I guess, uh, and they have much improved microphones. So in much louder wind noise, it can still hear you say, hey Meta, start a video or, or whatever for a video recording you're doing, it can still hear what's happening in front of you. It'll also do slow mo. It'll also do hyperlapse. Yeah.

• 48:16Andrew Manganelli?

  They're stabilized also.

• 48:17Speaker 01

  Stabilization.

• 48:19David Imel?

IP67. So those are gonna be $4.99, nine hours of battery life, and available in October. Yeah, they also plug into Garmin, if you're a big Garmin person, and they plug into Strava.

• 48:30Speaker 05

That was my favorite feature about these.

• 48:32David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 48:33Speaker 05

Because a couple, I think two years ago, we ran to Brooklyn half.

• 48:36David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 48:36Speaker 05

And we were planning to do a studio video on it.

• 48:38David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 48:38Speaker 05

And I remember every mile, I was taking my phone out, recording myself with my friend, and then by like mile nine, that's not where my head was. I forgot that everything I was supposed to be recording. I was just trying not to die. So like, if these glasses would just like automatically record every mile and then do a hyperlapse of it, that's really freaking cool.

• 48:55David Imel?

It's one of the biggest features.

• 48:56Andrew Manganelli?

It can take the run they're expecting you to do, record it at certain points in the run, and you can also overlay your Garmin or Strava statistics on that video at those things. And it said it would even like pull it up and put them all together, I think, which is.

• 49:11David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 49:11Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, it's basically doing everything for you for a whole run.

• 49:14David Imel?

It's got much louder speakers, so they're six, they're six decibels louder than the other Oakley glasses they launched like, what, six months ago? They launched that other Oakley collab, probably less, four months ago or so. Um, they have lights on the sides, which can kind of help you keep on your pace target if you're trying to stay to peripherals, trying to stay to certain speed. Uh, they have nine hours of battery life. They put the control buttons underneath the arms of the glasses because they were thinking about people who run with hats or with, or if they're biking, you know, you have a helmet and you don't want to be able to press it down.

• 49:44Speaker 01

There's also another extra button. There's an action button that's customizable. So there's the capture button, and then there's like a smaller button next to it that you can make it do slow mo or whatever action you want it to.

• 49:53David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 49:54Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 49:54David Imel?

So I live in Brooklyn. I see people running constantly. I see people running with these Oakley wraparounds constantly, and I just know, these are gonna explode.

• 50:03Andrew Manganelli?

I think these are gonna be the best selling ones.

• 50:05David Imel?

These are gonna be insane. They're $500, so they're expensive, but they're cheaper than the Meta, um, display, which we'll get to shortly. And the fact that it plugs into all of the most popular running and exercise culture apps, I think is a really big deal.

• 50:21Andrew Manganelli?

This feels like. New GoPro to me right now, like the thing that you buy because you think what you're doing is super interesting and you want to get a bunch of recordings of it. Hey, GoPro was wildly successful with this and like show a bunch of people who are insane athletes. I mean, they literally use Red Bull athletes in there, which feels about as synonymous as GoPros you can get in terms of like capturing extreme sports. But I think a lot of people are going to buy these because of stuff like that. And then probably just have them as sunglasses later. That plays music because they realize they don't want to record everything.

• 50:54David Imel?

Yeah. So the camera has 122 degree field of view. It can do 3K video for three minutes. It can do 1080p 60 for three minutes. It can do 1080p 30 for five minutes and then 720p 120 FPS slow motion, which is, which is interesting. Yeah. I mean, on your note of the GoPro, this is a much, I would way rather just wear glasses while I was like snowboarding that I already needed to wear because it's super bright out versus like strapping something to my chest. You know, it's a lot easier. It automatically syncs so it can, it can automatically upload the video to like your Strava when you finish your exercise. Um, yeah, I think there's going to be very, very popular and there's a lot of features in here that I didn't expect that I think are actually very useful. So.

• 51:37Speaker 01

To me, this really confirms that one of the best uses for it is the camera that's on your face. There's so much, there's so much built around it and how it works now.

• 51:46Andrew Manganelli?

Did you catch, we already talked about how like two live demos went wrong, but I'm convinced the third one did that wrapped up this whole event, which was Mark saying, we have one more live demo, comes out with Diplo to go for a run to the after party and he like puts the sunglasses on, they wave to everyone, they leave and then he's getting in this group with a bunch of other runners. Also, Hella was there. Shout out Hella, great guy. He was part of this, uh, the video for this anyways. And then Mark just takes the glasses off and like flips them upside down and looks at them a couple of times and then they all just run with like a camera on a car following them. I'm convinced it was supposed to be like the walk-in.

• 52:22Speaker 01

Supposed to have the overlay maybe?

• 52:24Andrew Manganelli?

Well, no, remember in the walk-in we saw from his point of view when he came on to the stage? I think he was supposed to leave similar to that. And we were supposed to get a feed of the glasses. But it's the wifi again, then wifi screwing everything up.

• 52:36Speaker 05

We keep mentioning wifi because a lot of the live demos failed for anyone who didn't.

• 52:40Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. And he planned on the wifi. It's, it was like, I was waiting for him to just. I was waiting for him to yell at everyone like Steve Jobs and say, get off your computer so we can make this work.

• 52:48David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 52:49Speaker 01

Yeah. So anyway, that brings us to the last of the products, which is the $800 full-on Meta Ray-Ban display. Not the most clever name, but what's happening here is there is now a single monocular display on the right-hand side that's just off-center of your field of view and is really bright and will show you things.

• 53:13David Imel?

And before we get into that, I want to totally unrelated mention that Samsung just started showing ads on all of its refrigerators. Totally unrelated.

• 53:21Andrew Manganelli?

  Unrelated?

• 53:22David Imel?

Totally unrelated. Anyway, we can talk about the display in front of your eyes at 20, uh, 24/7 now.

• 53:28Speaker 01

Hopefully there's no ads, uh, coming to this. But yeah, so if the main use of the Meta Ray-Bans was having a camera on your face and being able to talk to AI, then this, I think, became interesting because it unlocks a bunch of other way bigger capabilities than just the regular ones.

• 53:50Speaker 01

Though number one probably is being able to frame your photos and videos because you have the viewfinder. So you can really line up and actually, uh, frame your shot.

• 54:00Andrew Manganelli?

And see it after you take it.

• 54:01Speaker 01

And see it after you take it. But then the other interesting thing is there's a control band that is paired with these glasses. It's the little AM, EMG band that's on your wrist that we showed from the Meta Orion demo.

• 54:13David Imel?

They're calling it the Meta Neural Band.

• 54:14Speaker 01

Yeah. And it's all, it's productized now. It's nice and fabricy and has like a magnetic strap and like slaps onto the back of your wrist. And that can read all of the neurons firing through your wrist and all the gestures that you're doing to control the UI in, in this like display that you see.

• 54:32David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 54:33Speaker 01

So you can do things like, uh, open up a map, navigate somewhere and see the navigation instructions with a live moving compass to know where you should turn next.

• 54:44Andrew Manganelli?

Can I ask a very specific question that's based on how you described that, that our viewers can't see? You were describing it and you were looking up. All the demos made it feel like it was kind of bottom right corner to me. Where like, where is it in your vision?

• 54:57Speaker 01

Down and to the right a little bit. And what was really interesting, remember Orion? You could like, I could look at you and see that you're looking at something because it was like lights were on. Not a hint of that at all.

• 55:06Andrew Manganelli?

  Really?

• 55:07Speaker 01

  Absolutely no light leak.

• 55:08Andrew Manganelli?

I can see that's crazy. But this is also specific where Orion was full field of view, like in front of you too.

• 55:15Speaker 01

  Totally.

• 55:15Andrew Manganelli?

  So.

• 55:16Speaker 01

Yeah, different tech, double versus single lens. But that was still cool that I could be reading something and you would never know. Another thing you can do, live transcribe or live translate whoever's talking to you.

• 55:29Andrew Manganelli?

  That seems very helpful.

• 55:30Speaker 01

Super, super interesting and potentially useful. I could be talking to you and again, a loud room and it would use the beam forming mics to understand that I'm looking at the person in front of me. And to put the text, the subtext from what that person is saying on the glasses. So it could be super loud and I did a demo of this and it worked very, very well. And then I turned around and a different person talked to me in this loud room and it stopped listening to that person and started subtitling the person in front of me. And didn't listen to my voice because it's obviously coming from me. So that's really cool. The translation part could also be awesome.

• 56:02Andrew Manganelli?

I think that was cool. This seems like to me the better way of doing that versus the like delayed audio coming back at you because you just get subtitles. But this is something to have a full conversation, both parties need to have.

• 56:14Speaker 01

Yeah, if it was two different languages.

• 56:17Andrew Manganelli?

Well, yeah, presumably you would be doing it in two different, right? Like if I can't, if I don't understand Spanish, I'm probably not going to read it and then speak it back.

• 56:24Speaker 05

No, the subtitles were also for English. Like you could just use them.

• 56:27Speaker 01

You can just use them for your own language.

• 56:29Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah. Oh, okay, that's nice.

• 56:31Speaker 01

  Which is cool.

• 56:32David Imel?

It would be really nice to travel through another country with this because it would just be a lot easier to understand people.

• 56:37Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, understand, but then you can't communicate back to me.

• 56:40David Imel?

You can't communicate back. You still gotta do the like just hand gestures and stuff back.

• 56:43Speaker 05

I just want this for my everyday life.

• 56:45Speaker 01

Put the glasses on. Take the glasses back.

• 56:48Speaker 05

I already watch all my movies with subtitles, so why not realize?

• 56:51Andrew Manganelli?

Could I watch a movie and it could put the subtitles but slightly below the TV screen? So now the subtitles aren't in the TV.

• 56:59Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 57:00David Imel?

  So.

• 57:00Speaker 01

  Deconstructed.

• 57:03Andrew Manganelli?

  Saw the rage right now.

• 57:04David Imel?

Yeah. Uh, okay. You can also view your messages. You can take video calls, which they tried to do a demo of on stage. That did not work, but.

• 57:12Speaker 01

  I got one to work.

• 57:12David Imel?

  How did that feel?

• 57:14Speaker 01

So again, it's a, it's a small bottom right hand, not corner, but lower right hand area of your glasses view. But it's color. It's decently sharp. It's legible. And if I turn my camera on, the person on the other side of the call can see what I'm seeing. So I did do a video call. It worked. You can text, uh, which is pretty good with your voice, but I also did a demo of the handwriting.

• 57:39David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 57:40Speaker 01

  Unbelievably good.

• 57:42David Imel?

Yeah. So this, this demo actually did work live on stage really quickly and really accurately. And effectively what it looked like was you had the band on and you just write as if you have a pencil in your hand. And it knows exactly what you're writing.

• 57:55Speaker 01

Quickly and accurately. Shockingly so. I could be texting someone like this with my hand in my lap and you would never know. And every single letter I'm writing, I'm just literally writing the letter in plain English.

• 58:05Andrew Manganelli?

  How's your handwriting?

• 58:07Speaker 01

  Fine, I think.

• 58:07Andrew Manganelli?

I'd break the shit out of this thing.

• 58:10Speaker 01

That's a good test. We should do a handwriting test version, but yes.

• 58:13David Imel?

  Wow.

• 58:14Speaker 01

I picked it up super quickly. It's not using the camera feed at all. It's just using the neural input.

• 58:18David Imel?

  Crazy.

• 58:18Speaker 01

That, I was shocked by how good that demo was. Like how good that tech has gotten in the years since we tried it on Orion.

• 58:24David Imel?

Can you only message through WhatsApp? Cause I know you can only do the video calls through WhatsApp.

• 58:28Speaker 01

Yeah. So, okay. Here's the, here's the downside to this, right?

• 58:31David Imel?

I don't know anyone that uses WhatsApp.

• 58:33Andrew Manganelli?

  Hey, I'm right here.

• 58:35Speaker 01

This is a meta product and it is a new platform, uh, that does use your phone to connect to the internet, but does sort of exist in a separate world where you're not really taking your phone out of your pocket. So the philosophy is it needs all of its own first party actions. If you're messaging someone, it is through WhatsApp because Meta owns WhatsApp. If you are scrolling through social media, it is Instagram because they could just built in Instagram feeds. Uh, the music, they have a partnership with Spotify, so it was doing it through that. The maps were mapping services that they built in, right?

• 59:10David Imel?

  So it's not Google Maps?

• 59:11Speaker 01

It's not Google Maps. So this is data that they've borrowed that is probably not going to be super real time and probably not going to have great traffic data or anything like that, but they have a map service built in. And so they have all of this stuff built on platform and ideally that's the stuff you use.

• 59:28David Imel?

  Oh.

• 59:29Speaker 01

  But I don't.

• 59:30David Imel?

So trying to just get people into this like magical meta ecosystem.

• 59:34Speaker 01

I don't, I think it's kind of, it kind of feels like they're trying to force you into using meta services. But also I think by design has to have its own stuff. Like if you rely on the phone, but the phone manufacturers will never give you full.

• 59:47David Imel?

  API access.

• 59:48Speaker 01

API access to use, you know, iMessage or like data from all of the stuff going into the phone. You have to build stuff that doesn't depend on the phone.

• 59:57David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 59:58Speaker 01

So they just have their own services.

• 1:00:00David Imel?

  It's frustrating.

• 1:00:00Andrew Manganelli?

It's fair, but as a consumer, you basically just told me I can't text message or video call on it.

• 1:00:04David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:05Andrew Manganelli?

Cause I already use WhatsApp then and I don't feel like.

• 1:00:07David Imel?

  I mean, we're in America.

• 1:00:08Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:09David Imel?

This will be popular in Europe, I guess.

• 1:00:10Speaker 01

Yeah. Yeah. So if you want to text people or video chat people, it will be with WhatsApp. Yeah. So that's a bummer here, but a lot of people listen to this are like, great, I use WhatsApp.

• 1:00:21Andrew Manganelli?

  That's great.

• 1:00:21Speaker 01

So all this stuff because of the display is much more useful. I think the maps are super useful. I think the viewfinder is super useful. I think live translation and, and transcriptions of subtitling the world is super useful. And all of that is enabled by having a little display component to this, which is really cool.

• 1:00:36Andrew Manganelli?

Can you give me a, uh, size approximation, approximation between like regular meta Ray-Bans, which are already a little thicker than Ray-Bans and like Orion's that we tried?

• 1:00:48Speaker 01

  Split the difference, I think.

• 1:00:49Andrew Manganelli?

  Split it?

• 1:00:50Speaker 01

They are definitely thicker than regular meta Ray-Bans.

• 1:00:52Andrew Manganelli?

That still seems too thick for everyday use. Impressive that it fit in there. I'll still say that about Orion. Very impressive. Too thick for everyday glasses?

• 1:01:01Speaker 01

Yeah. You know, I was wearing them for a couple hours while I was doing my demos and shooting all my footage. And I, they're plastic and like, I found myself like, they were definitely weighted very well, but they're also, they're 69 grams. And yep, that's what I said. And they, they're just a little too heavy for me to wear them and not think about them. I can wear the basic Ray-Bans and not think about them.

• 1:01:24David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:25Speaker 01

These just have a little bit extra compute, a little bit more with the projector and the wave guide and all that. And it's just a little too heavy.

• 1:01:32David Imel?

They, uh, they unfortunately also mentioned you can watch Instagram reels on them and, uh,

• 1:01:36Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:01:37David Imel?

that's how you know we're headed down a dark path.

• 1:01:39Speaker 01

So you remember the Wally clip? We've all seen the Wally clip.

• 1:01:42David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:43Speaker 01

You can literally sit back and do, have the gesture with the EMG wristband and just.

• 1:01:51Speaker 05

Mark has opened your mouth just a little farther.

• 1:01:52Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:54Speaker 01

And you can just be in your own world and no one can see that that's what you're doing. You look like a guy spaced out with his glasses on, looking at the sky, but you are flipping through and actively watching Instagram reels.

• 1:02:05David Imel?

And all the clips are AI-generated with VO3.

• 1:02:08Speaker 01

I wasn't sure, I haven't made this video yet, but I wasn't sure if that's how I want to intro or exit this video.

• 1:02:13Andrew Manganelli?

  Both.

• 1:02:14Speaker 01

Are you, like genuinely, are you okay? Are you okay with, because when I was on MetiCampus, lots of people wearing thick-framed glasses everywhere, and I just instinctively was like, you guys are all wearing cameras on your faces.

• 1:02:25David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:26Speaker 01

Are you cool with having a conversation with someone and seeing their eyes drift a little bit to the side?

• 1:02:31David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:32Speaker 01

And not knowing if they are watching something, reading something?

• 1:02:36Andrew Manganelli?

Or if they got an ad.

• 1:02:37Speaker 01

  If they got a call?

• 1:02:38David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:38Speaker 01

Like, what is, what are they looking at? Are you cool with that?

• 1:02:40David Imel?

I already get anxious enough with my phone buzzing in my pocket when I'm out with friends. I don't need notifications coming in the side of, I mean, if I ever use these, I'm gonna turn everything off.

• 1:02:50Speaker 05

Is this worse than checking your smartwatch in the middle of a conversation?

• 1:02:53Speaker 01

That was the argument, is that yes, it's better. Because the-

• 1:02:56David Imel?

  I don't think it's better.

• 1:02:57Andrew Manganelli?

It's better because they don't know.

• 1:02:59Speaker 01

  It's not better.

• 1:02:59David Imel?

No, it's better if the other person does know. I don't want to not know that you're not paying attention to me.

• 1:03:04Andrew Manganelli?

Because I can be like, sorry, I should check something real quick instead of-

• 1:03:05Speaker 01

I guess it's from both sides, like, from the other person's side, if you see me pull my phone in my pocket and check it, or look at my smartwatch, that is worse than if I'm, like, having a conversation with you, and it looks like I'm kind of looking at you, but I'm actually reading something.

• 1:03:19David Imel?

I'm reliving my trauma from my mother. I don't need that. I don't need more of that, Mark has.

• 1:03:24Andrew Manganelli?

It's the same, it's just less of a chance they notice. So that's just like, I think that's just as bad. You might just get away with it.

• 1:03:31Speaker 01

There was a lot of lines in the keynote, and from Zuck, and from Boz, and, and just about, like, being more present and not taking your phone out all the time. And there are maybe valid instances of that, like, oh, you're on a hike, and you see this really pretty view off the side of the mountain. Do you take your phone out of your bag and take a picture, or do you just boop and move on?

• 1:03:49David Imel?

Or like for maps, I get that.

• 1:03:50Speaker 01

  Or for maps, yeah.

• 1:03:52Andrew Manganelli?

I think they're cool. I think there's plenty of reasons that this is neat.

• 1:03:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:03:56Andrew Manganelli?

  But-

• 1:03:56Speaker 01

But Instagram reels. Yeah, so if the, yeah, exactly.

• 1:04:00David Imel?

And the fact that you can't even see it.

• 1:04:01Speaker 01

The pitch is being more present, but you can easily be way less present.

• 1:04:04David Imel?

  Right.

• 1:04:04Speaker 01

  So it's double sided.

• 1:04:06David Imel?

Isn't that how everything is sold to us, though?

• 1:04:08Speaker 02

And that's the financial incentive of Meta, right? Like, like their whole business model is based on engagement. So the more time you can spend scrolling while being present, the more it works.

• 1:04:19Andrew Manganelli?

Every tech company that tells you this is how we make you more present is just trying to sell your things so they can make you way less present in everything.

• 1:04:27Speaker 01

Well, it's also like Meta has tried to make a phone before. Like, we can't skip over that smartphones are dominant and they tried to make phones. Yeah. And that's failed several times. Now they're moving on and they've renamed themselves Meta and they're very concerned with the Metaverse. And they want this next technology to be post-phone.

• 1:04:46David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:46Speaker 01

And the only way to do that is to sell you on this being better than your phone and slowly weaning you off your phone. They'll never replace the phone. Maybe, maybe someday, maybe you'll, you know, move on, but.

• 1:04:58David Imel?

Yeah, not, well, everything that it can do is in their own little ecosystem.

• 1:05:03Andrew Manganelli?

I was gonna ask, did they say anything about opening it up to app developers?

• 1:05:07Speaker 01

  Opening what up?

• 1:05:08Andrew Manganelli?

  The glasses.

• 1:05:09David Imel?

Like the glass, being able to video call with other services.

• 1:05:11Andrew Manganelli?

iPhone didn't have an App Store, right? So like, it was all things Apple made. And then when the App Store hit, it was like a big explosion. Are there plans for that with this?

• 1:05:18Speaker 01

You know, I had some conversations and I'm probably, maybe we can pull that in with Boz, where he talked about like the first few generations of it have to be first party. And then, once you've gotten people to embrace the platform, then you can start like adding other things. So, hearing that sounds like, yes, they plan on having other apps and having APIs and things where developers can make cool stuff for the glasses. But they know they need to have their own first party stuff working and useful out the box, like the first gen iPhone.

• 1:05:49David Imel?

  I guess that makes sense.

• 1:05:50Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:05:51David Imel?

Yeah, I don't know. I guess Meta wanted to make the Metaverse and be the next generation of the internet, but that totally failed. So now they're like, now we can be this.

• 1:05:58Andrew Manganelli?

They opened this event with, our goal is to build great looking glasses that deliver personal superintelligence and a feeling of presence using realistic holograms. And these ideas combined are what we call the Metaverse.

• 1:06:08David Imel?

Okay, Zuck. Forgot. Zuck just rebranded the Metaverse. Because they changed their company name to Meta and they need to make it work still.

• 1:06:17Andrew Manganelli?

Sorry, I had to write that down. When I heard it, I was like, I need to write that down.

• 1:06:20David Imel?

I'm like, that's not what you said the Metaverse was two years ago.

• 1:06:22Speaker 01

10 years later, they're like, we're making an e-scooter and it's the Metaverse.

• 1:06:27David Imel?

This whole time we knew. Yeah, um, ads on your fridge. So, yeah, I am interested to try these out. These are gonna be $800, which is a lot of money. Eight hundred, I mean, $800 is expensive. It's a whole phone. It's very expensive. It's an iPhone, iPhone Air. Well, there's a thousand. It's an iPhone. It's an iPhone 17. Seventeen. But, uh, it is augmented by your phone, so it uses your phone's internet connection. It's definitely a lost leader device. Like, they're probably losing money on this. Yeah, but they wanna get it. At least on the, I mean.

• 1:07:02Speaker 02

No, they're losing money on the hardware, but they're, they're, the, dude, the, if you can scroll Instagram reels on that thing, dude, like, think about how, and then also just like,

• 1:07:12Speaker 02

think about how much data they could collect.

• 1:07:13David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:07:14Speaker 02

  With, with.

• 1:07:14David Imel?

  I know.

• 1:07:15Speaker 02

And especially once they ship the, the EMG bracelet, dude.

• 1:07:19David Imel?

Yeah, well, the EMG bracelet comes with it. Yeah.

• 1:07:21Speaker 02

  Oh, it's shipped.

• 1:07:22David Imel?

There are a bunch of chips with it, yeah.

• 1:07:23Speaker 02

It's like, okay. When I read the press release, it said not for sale, but I guess that meant individually, like, it does come with the, yeah, bro, like, think about, think about when you're on Instagram, I don't know.

• 1:07:33David Imel?

  Yeah, I know.

• 1:07:34Speaker 02

There, this is gonna be like a cash cow for them, assuming people actually adopt it.

• 1:07:38David Imel?

This is why I removed all the social media from my phone before this happened. Okay, so they get up to six hours of mixed-use battery life, or 30 hours with the charging case, which is collapsible.

• 1:07:50Andrew Manganelli?

  That was cool.

• 1:07:50David Imel?

Yeah. It's like a little origami foldable. I'm sorry to say, the case is fire. It is incredible. So the case has battery in it that charges the glasses? Yes. And it gets it up to 30 hours? Yeah. It's pretty cool. Isn't that sick? Yeah. The case is 5X battery charge and also folds flat in one second flat? That's crazy. It's kind of awesome. It's pretty sweet. I have footage of me folding it, like, in my, on my first try, and I was like, this is the greatest case ever made. Yeah. It's pretty sick. It is interesting. I think Meta is the company that is gonna be able to, like, advance this category faster, just because they're more invested in it, cuz it's like their whole thing now. Google would make more sense from an app ecosystem perspective, also Apple, but it's gonna take them a lot longer, cuz it's not their priority. Like, Meta has to make this their.

• 1:08:32Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, Meta has to make it their thing and be kind of first and flashy with it.

• 1:08:36Speaker 05

I'm hyped for like the third version of this, or the fourth, where it's like regular glasses and like a ring.

• 1:08:42David Imel?

Like a ring instead of a wristband.

• 1:08:44Speaker 01

I think the wristband is the specific tech, because it's also a little bit fashion.

• 1:08:49David Imel?

  Or they make a smartwatch.

• 1:08:50Speaker 01

Like it's a piece of tech that you're wearing.

• 1:08:52David Imel?

They can make a smartwatch that has the thing built in.

• 1:08:55Speaker 01

Maybe, but I think the, you know, they've been developing it specifically around the wrist for so long that I think it has to be the wrist. But I talked to them again, I was like, okay, so this is a piece of tech that people have to wear on their face and on their body. It has to be considered in some way fashion, like you have to make it look good and presentable. And they've done a good job of that.

• 1:09:12David Imel?

Right, I think when you guys see the band, yeah, looks pretty normal.

• 1:09:15Andrew Manganelli?

Meta brought back the 90s. We now have slap bracelets and transition lenses again.

• 1:09:19David Imel?

Oh, yeah. These are also transition lenses, by the way, which.

• 1:09:22Speaker 01

  Yeah, unfortunately.

• 1:09:23David Imel?

It's one of those things where you try to do two things. If you try to do two things in one device, it does both of them badly. Yeah, the transition, the transition lenses on these Meta glasses are not very good.

• 1:09:33Speaker 01

I don't know, the transitions on my Meta Ray-Bans right now are pretty good.

• 1:09:36David Imel?

  Are they?

• 1:09:36Speaker 01

They never, they're never good sunglasses.

• 1:09:39David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:39Speaker 01

  But they're really good clear.

• 1:09:40David Imel?

  Right.

• 1:09:41Andrew Manganelli?

I think that means they're bad.

• 1:09:43David Imel?

  They're bad at transitioning.

• 1:09:45Andrew Manganelli?

  Sunglasses, though?

• 1:09:46Speaker 01

  Well, I guess usually.

• 1:09:46Andrew Manganelli?

They're bad at the thing that protects your eyes.

• 1:09:48Speaker 02

Yeah, wait, if they're good at being clear, that means they're good at doing nothing.

• 1:09:51Speaker 01

No, I guess a two in one is usually bad at both.

• 1:09:54David Imel?

You're saying they're good at being clear.

• 1:09:55Speaker 01

They're actually good at being clear, but are bad at being sunglasses.

• 1:09:58David Imel?

  At least there's something.

• 1:09:59Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:10:00Andrew Manganelli?

  At least there's something.

• 1:10:01Speaker 01

Yeah, I'm curious who ends up purchasing these, but, um, yeah.

• 1:10:07Speaker 05

Are you gonna review all of them?

• 1:10:10Speaker 01

I think I would like to use the Vanguard's for recording POV, uh, either Frisbee, but also autofocus for driving.

• 1:10:21David Imel?

Want to jump off a mountain?

• 1:10:23Speaker 01

And maybe, yeah, maybe action sports, GoPro stuff, the type that you'd like, you know, put a action camera on your chest or your forehead for, that type of stuff. And then I, I think I'm gonna keep waiting as far as, uh, smart glasses, because I think, based on how much I use their services, the Google one will be better for me. If it's the Android XR experience where it's like plugged into your Android phone, this is the advantage of Googles. Like they have a smartphone operating system, they can make it plug in.

• 1:10:53David Imel?

  Just work.

• 1:10:54Speaker 01

Yeah, it's gonna work better with the stuff that's on your phone, and I think that's gonna work better for me.

• 1:10:58David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:59Speaker 01

So instead of trying to shoehorn my life into WhatsApp and.

• 1:11:02Andrew Manganelli?

  Like really test it?

• 1:11:03Speaker 01

Yeah, I think it would be, I think the Google one's gonna be better for me.

• 1:11:06David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:07Speaker 01

It's not out yet, so we'll see.

• 1:11:08David Imel?

Daddy Google can have my data instead of Daddy Meta.

• 1:11:12Speaker 01

I mean, they already have all my data.

• 1:11:13David Imel?

Yeah, that's a lot of smarts.

• 1:11:15Speaker 01

Yeah, I mean, that's a lot of smarts, but also a lot of data.

• 1:11:17David Imel?

  Exactly.

• 1:11:18Speaker 02

  Well, speaking of smarts, trivia.

• 1:11:23Speaker 01

  That was good.

• 1:11:25David Imel?

  Thank you very much.

• 1:11:26Speaker 02

  Better than my previous one.

• 1:11:27Speaker 05

Side note before Ellis tells this very great question. My favorite part of the bonus episode was when we came back with a guest and Ellis just stared at the camera for like five full seconds.

• 1:11:36Andrew Manganelli?

For audio listeners, that's probably gonna be confusing.

• 1:11:38Speaker 05

Yeah, it's definitely confusing, but editing it, I was cracking up, so definitely go watch that anyway.

• 1:11:43Speaker 02

Did we give that a proper announcement? There's if you're, I mean, if you're on YouTube.

• 1:11:46Speaker 01

  In the beginning.

• 1:11:47David Imel?

  Yeah, we did.

• 1:11:48Speaker 02

Where was I? Oh, whatever. Who cares?

• 1:11:49David Imel?

  Where were you?

• 1:11:49Speaker 02

Uh, guys, I have a new trivia question, uh, which it's always really, really, really hard to write trivia questions about meta, because every single piece of like historical, you know, list about meta is just hundreds of pages of lawsuits. But when you weed through the lawsuits, you can find some really interesting stuff. For example, the stuff that forms this question. Which of the following two meta products was shut down first? These are former meta products. Product one is called Lasso. I've never heard of this.

• 1:12:26David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:26Speaker 02

It was a TikTok competitor, a vertical video sort of thing aimed at teenagers.

• 1:12:32David Imel?

  Shocker.

• 1:12:33Speaker 02

  The second.

• 1:12:33Andrew Manganelli?

  That's Lasso?

• 1:12:34David Imel?

  It's horrible.

• 1:12:36Andrew Manganelli?

  And it's called Lasso?

• 1:12:37Speaker 02

  Yeah, to rope them in.

• 1:12:38David Imel?

  It's a rope man.

• 1:12:39Speaker 02

  Rope them in.

• 1:12:40Speaker 01

Not transparent at all. I can't be real.

• 1:12:43Speaker 02

  No, these are both real.

• 1:12:44David Imel?

Our next product is called Brain Damage.

• 1:12:46Speaker 02

The next one is called Libra. It was renamed DM at a certain point. This is a Facebook cryptocurrency. That the US government and the EU and the Swedish government or the Swiss government all said, no. So which one of these was shut down in an earlier year? I am not asking for which one lasted longer. I'm asking the shutdown year of each of these, which one was first.

• 1:13:11Andrew Manganelli?

Cool. If Waveform just had one collective no to any technology company every, once a year.

• 1:13:19David Imel?

  What do you mean?

• 1:13:19Andrew Manganelli?

You're just saying like they all these.

• 1:13:21Speaker 02

  Oh, we got to say.

• 1:13:21Andrew Manganelli?

We just got to say no to some like, like the power of these people just be like, no, you can't do that.

• 1:13:27Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:13:27Andrew Manganelli?

  Waveform should get one collective.

• 1:13:29Speaker 02

That should be a part of the Waveform Awards.

• 1:13:32Andrew Manganelli?

Like our no of the year.

• 1:13:33Speaker 02

  Our no of the year.

• 1:13:35David Imel?

  23 and me.

• 1:13:38Speaker 02

Anyway. We'll be right back. Private equity.

• 1:13:54Speaker 01

Support for the show comes from Jira by Atlassian. So AI is only as useful as the context it has to work from. But when that context is scattered across tools like threads and DMs, that means your team and your AI agents end up flying kind of blind. That's the problem Jira solves. What's the gold tied to your project? What got decided last week in Slack? Atlassian's teamwork graph pulls all of these pieces together from Jira, Confluence, Slack, GitHub, and more, so nothing falls through the cracks.

Support for this show comes from Airbus. Every experiment we've ever done down here on Earth has involved gravity. So when the International Space Station launched in 1998, it opened up new frontiers for research in human biology and medicine. An opportunity to see how DNA strands, stem cells, and more might grow and evolve without the weight of the world on them. Now, a game-changing new space station, StarLab, is launching that will study agriculture, medicine, robotics, and more. And Airbus, who lead the ongoing design and engineering of the station, have designed it to be the next evolution for early research and real commercial production. On StarLab, it's possible to scale the amount of research and manufacturing.

• 1:15:55Speaker 06

The research humans are doing up in space can help us down here on Earth. And experiments in microgravity might fundamentally change our understanding of biology and medicine. Learn more about StarLab and how Airbus is making it happen at fly.airbus.com/theflightpath.

• 1:16:15Andrew Manganelli?

All right, welcome back. We have heard rumors of a Rivian e-bike for a little while. In fact, RJ kind of confirmed, but not confirmed it on a Daniel Tosh podcast episode, which is a good listen if you haven't listened to it. It's pretty funny.

• 1:16:28Speaker 01

It's a weird mix of words.

• 1:16:29Andrew Manganelli?

It was a weird mix of words.

• 1:16:33Andrew Manganelli?

  But.

• 1:16:33Speaker 01

  It is the 90s.

• 1:16:36Andrew Manganelli?

Micah Toll from Electrek just went through one of the teaser videos, I think on Instagram, because I can't find this teaser video, but apparently the new company named Also that just claims they were making a new electric vehicle of some sort. They posted this teaser where a bunch of people are riding around on the new e-bike, but has this big blur on it, so you can't see what it looks like at all. Well, Micah went on and went frame by frame, and there's multiple frames where they just missed blurring the bike completely. So now we have the bike. Here it is. It's silly looking.

• 1:17:13Speaker 01

  Looks like.

• 1:17:14Andrew Manganelli?

It looks like those compact bikes that like fold up where like the wheels are very small and you kind of ride a bit higher off of them.

• 1:17:20Speaker 01

This better have amazing specs, because I've seen so many e-bikes that are like,

• 1:17:23Andrew Manganelli?

  That's my exact question.

• 1:17:24Speaker 01

They're designed to look like they're not e-bikes, so they have a pretty compact battery like in the post that are pretty hidden. So it just looks like a normal bike. This does not look like a normal bike.

• 1:17:33David Imel?

Why is there a man in a penguin suit?

• 1:17:34Andrew Manganelli?

Let's go. I think the whole video, I think, was very like whimsical about things, but it is very funny that we're just looking at a leak of a man in a penguin suit holding a bike.

• 1:17:43Speaker 01

  On a tennis court.

• 1:17:44Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:45Speaker 01

This has got a huge box.

• 1:17:46Andrew Manganelli?

It's got a huge box by the pedals. It also has kind of like these cargo rails and a basket on the back. Nothing about this screams "I fold up," except for the fact that it kind of looks like those types of bikes.

• 1:17:57Speaker 01

Doesn't really feel like a Rivian product to me.

• 1:18:00Andrew Manganelli?

Technically, it's not, although RJ is leading also, and they have investment from Rivian. So it's pretty much a Rivian product, but it's not technically a Rivian product.

• 1:18:10David Imel?

This is a bad tech company name on the same level that OnePlus is a bad tech company name.

• 1:18:13Andrew Manganelli?

  It's not great.

• 1:18:14David Imel?

Every time you try to use it in a sentence, it's confusing.

• 1:18:16Andrew Manganelli?

But it's gonna slap as a podcast title one week.

• 1:18:21David Imel?

But OnePlus sounds like you're about to say something and then you don't say the rest. And so does also. Yeah. Like when you say, oh, there's this company also that has a bike.

• 1:18:32David Imel?

What? What company? Also, also files for bankruptcy. Also. Yeah, yeah.

• 1:18:37Andrew Manganelli?

But this, does this not kind of yell bigger version of boosted scooter fiasco of like,

• 1:18:45David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:18:45Andrew Manganelli?

we've got something really good going for us, let's make something that.

• 1:18:48David Imel?

Do you remember the boosted scooter?

• 1:18:49Andrew Manganelli?

  Remember the boosted scooter?

• 1:18:50David Imel?

  Booster scooter.

• 1:18:50Andrew Manganelli?

It was very, it was a thick scooter. It was just like.

• 1:18:54David Imel?

  What took them down?

• 1:18:55Andrew Manganelli?

Way too intense, way too expensive, and in a category that had plenty of others. Like, there are so many e-bikes right now.

• 1:19:02David Imel?

And it broke the finger of a Verge reporter as well.

• 1:19:04Andrew Manganelli?

That's, as long as this bike doesn't break any fingers of news reporters, maybe it'll be fine.

• 1:19:09David Imel?

  Uh huh.

• 1:19:10Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. I don't know, it scares me a little bit, because there's always grumblings here and there of Rivian, like, do they have enough to make it through? Are they gonna stay alive, blah, blah, blah? And I really want my R2, so if a freaking e-bike ruins my chance at the R2, I'm gonna be very upset.

• 1:19:26David Imel?

I want the R3, man. I just want that Crosstrek. It looks so sick.

• 1:19:29Andrew Manganelli?

It feels like they got a good thing going for them, and this feels like a very crowded, um, space.

• 1:19:34David Imel?

  Yeah, there's a lot of e-bike companies.

• 1:19:36Andrew Manganelli?

There are a lot of e-bikes.

• 1:19:37David Imel?

  There's a lot of e-bike companies.

• 1:19:39Andrew Manganelli?

There's probably a lot of cities trying to find ways to tone down e-bikes, because they're kind of the scourge of some cities. The way people drive them through, like.

• 1:19:47David Imel?

Yeah, I mean, scooters used to be that, too. Yeah. And New York, we have City Bike, which is, it's in the Lyft app, uh, but City, the bank, it's capitalism. Um, but now they're replacing all of them with motorized ones. They're trying to replace all of them. All of them? Yeah, which honestly, I think they should because the regular ones are so heavy that it feels like it takes more energy to pump the wheels than it does to, it's like I could walk.

• 1:20:13Andrew Manganelli?

I would assume a large company would regulate them properly because isn't there like a speed limit on what they're supposed to be able to do?

• 1:20:20David Imel?

  Like 20 miles an hour.

• 1:20:22Andrew Manganelli?

  But there's like plenty of.

• 1:20:23Speaker 02

  They work great.

• 1:20:24Andrew Manganelli?

  What?

• 1:20:24Speaker 02

  They work great.

• 1:20:25David Imel?

  They're great.

• 1:20:25Speaker 02

City Bike is a beloved program.

• 1:20:26David Imel?

  Yeah, no, people love it.

• 1:20:27Andrew Manganelli?

I'm saying City Bike, if they, when they do e-bikes, would probably follow the regulations where there's lots of other people in the city who are buying e-bikes that are going way faster than they should.

• 1:20:36Speaker 02

Yes, and then also the City Bike e-bikes are not the throttle e-bikes, they're the assistant.

• 1:20:40Andrew Manganelli?

  They're pedal assist.

• 1:20:41David Imel?

Yeah. Um, there are also a number of e-bike companies that are basically just motorcycles and they get around, they say that they're e-bikes because they have pedals. But they are still able to go like 50 miles an hour. They say you need a motorcycle license to do it, but they will like let you unlock it. Anyway, so.

• 1:21:01Andrew Manganelli?

  Geez.

• 1:21:02David Imel?

Yeah, there's a lot of weird loopholes.

• 1:21:04Speaker 01

Yeah. I always remember like those scooters coming out and they always had like a 24 mile an hour top speed because technically if you hit 25, they would change categories or something.

• 1:21:13David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:14Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:21:15Andrew Manganelli?

24 on a scooter is fast enough to, to kill yourself.

• 1:21:18Speaker 01

But the boosted could go, it, it hit 24 and you're like, oh, this is limited to 24.

• 1:21:23David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:24Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:21:24Speaker 02

All of these things would work if we built roads for them, you know?

• 1:21:28Speaker 01

  Solar freaking roadways.

• 1:21:30Speaker 02

Yeah, and we're hell, oh, obviously, yeah, don't ever get on anything without a helmet, please.

• 1:21:34Speaker 01

  Bike lanes are.

• 1:21:36Speaker 02

Hmm, I mean, they, they do, but if, you know, think about how much, also, also, you know, think about how mad car drivers get about bike lanes all the time, you know?

• 1:21:45Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:21:45Andrew Manganelli?

Well, it's mostly the bikers. It's an easy parking spot.

• 1:21:48David Imel?

  Jeez.

• 1:21:49Andrew Manganelli?

I'm joking, please, I am joking.

• 1:21:51Speaker 01

  Welcome to New York.

• 1:21:52David Imel?

  Welcome to sarcasm.

• 1:21:53Speaker 01

It's a very welcome to New York.

• 1:21:54David Imel?

Yeah, um, okay, anyway, last little story before we do trivia, uh, this is just a really quick hit. Nothing have released the ear three, which is, uh, their earbuds. And the case has a quote unquote super mic on it, uh, which has a giant mic button that you're supposed To talk into. And I think that their mindset with this was sort of how all the TikTokers have the wired ear pods that they sort of talk into now. And they also have like the mics that the clip mics that they talk into and it's supposed to look like low quality and fun. And I will admit that, you know, usually the earbud mics are pretty horrible because they're not close enough to your mouth. And they're pointing the wrong direction and all of these things. And this is supposed to be better.

• 1:22:40David Imel?

Some preliminary testing from Don Preston at The Verge said it was not that much better. Interesting.

• 1:22:46Andrew Manganelli?

  Unfortunate.

• 1:22:46David Imel?

There are also some big problems with this, like the fact that it can only do it for calls, voice notes and memos in the essential space. But currently you cannot record audio from the cameras of your phone through it. Because apparently Android and iOS do not give access to that.

• 1:23:04Andrew Manganelli?

  See?

• 1:23:06David Imel?

Yeah, it uses the primary mic only. And that primary mic can change if you have something plugged into like the USB port. But because it's a wireless device, apparently cannot take over the primary mic slot for some reason. And nothing is urging these, the platform developers to change this. But it seems kind of weird to release a product that's centered around this before you can even do that. So just like the meta products, it seems like if you use voice notes and memos in the essential space on the nothing device.

• 1:23:39Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:39David Imel?

  Then it's useful. Yeah.

• 1:23:42Andrew Manganelli?

  So specific.

• 1:23:43David Imel?

  Very specific.

• 1:23:44Andrew Manganelli?

I still want them. My toxic treat is how much I love the nothing earbuds despite how many I've had that have broken and just done terribly.

• 1:23:52David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:52Andrew Manganelli?

  I still love these.

• 1:23:53David Imel?

I have started to see more of these in the city. I've seen quite a few of them in a city, actually.

• 1:23:58Speaker 02

Yeah, I never see any nothing phones in the city, but I see a lot of the buds.

• 1:24:01David Imel?

  Correct.

• 1:24:02Andrew Manganelli?

  Interesting.

• 1:24:02David Imel?

Yeah, I think the buds are in that a little affordable spectrum.

• 1:24:05Speaker 02

It reminds me of a dictaphone and for that reason I liked it.

• 1:24:09David Imel?

  What is that?

• 1:24:10Speaker 02

You know what a dictaphone is? Back in the day, when like, the world was way, way, way worse and only women knew how to type, the way a lot of business stuff was done would be that men would have these pocket tape recorders and they would record a bunch of thoughts and memos and stuff. And then you'd put it in a pneumatic tube and it would get shot through the building to a room full of women typing. It would get that cassette and then type up your, what you recorded.

• 1:24:36David Imel?

  Holy crap.

• 1:24:37Speaker 02

And then that would get sent out as the memo. But just as like a pocket, like a handheld voice recorder.

• 1:24:43David Imel?

  Right.

• 1:24:44Speaker 02

And I think there's something sort of...

• 1:24:46David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:46Speaker 02

I like the idea of like, putting something up to your mouth, recording something real quick.

• 1:24:49David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:49Speaker 02

But I guess it doesn't work.

• 1:24:51David Imel?

  I mean...

• 1:24:51Speaker 05

  My watch does that.

• 1:24:52Speaker 02

  That's true.

• 1:24:53David Imel?

Yeah, we'll have to test this ourselves. I'm sure we'll get some units in. We'll have more thoughts later. But something we, another thing that we have thoughts about is, uh...

• 1:25:04Speaker 05

  Trivia.

• 1:25:08David Imel?

  Almost smooth.

• 1:25:08Speaker 02

I was hoping it would kinda, you know...

• 1:25:10Speaker 05

Alright, quick update on the score. Marquez with four. Andrew in the lead with seven. And David way behind, all the way in the back, bringing up the rear with two.

• 1:25:24David Imel?

Yeah, I'm crying in the club right now. This is crazy.

• 1:25:27Speaker 05

Alright, so for one point per founder, can you name all of the Facebook founders besides Mark Zuckerberg? Go.

• 1:25:37David Imel?

  No.

• 1:25:39Andrew Manganelli?

I guess one other person that I know is...

• 1:25:41Speaker 05

Well, that's how this question originally started. Can you name the other founder who's like famous from a movie and yada, yada, yada? And Alice was like, "Let's up the ante."

• 1:25:49Andrew Manganelli?

I can't do that at all.

• 1:25:50Speaker 05

  Make it plus one.

• 1:25:51Andrew Manganelli?

I'm saying, I'm naming one other person that I know works at Meta right now.

• 1:25:55Speaker 05

  Oh.

• 1:25:57Speaker 02

  Is it Boz?

• 1:25:58David Imel?

  I was...

• 1:25:58Andrew Manganelli?

  Is that right?

• 1:25:59Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:26:00Andrew Manganelli?

  Then I'm wrong.

• 1:26:02David Imel?

  Before we start this...

• 1:26:04Speaker 05

Oh no, just flip them and read. What do we got? Oh my god.

• 1:26:11Speaker 01

  I don't know.

• 1:26:12Speaker 05

  I'm wrong.

• 1:26:13Speaker 01

This name came to my head, but I might be totally wrong.

• 1:26:16Speaker 02

  Marcus, what did you put?

• 1:26:16Speaker 01

  Sheryl Sandberg.

• 1:26:18David Imel?

She was not a founder, but she was their first, like, director of, like, communications. I said Spider-Man.

• 1:26:27Speaker 01

  No.

• 1:26:29David Imel?

Cause in the movie, it was, um.

• 1:26:30Speaker 05

  No, yeah, we get it.

• 1:26:31David Imel?

  What's his name?

• 1:26:32Speaker 05

  Andrew Garfield.

• 1:26:33David Imel?

  Spider-Man.

• 1:26:33Speaker 05

The actor who also played Spider-Man.

• 1:26:35David Imel?

So what was his name in real life?

• 1:26:37Speaker 05

In real life, it was Eduardo Severin. That was one. He's the one from the movie, Social Network. There was also Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes.

• 1:26:49David Imel?

Dustin also created, like, Asana or something.

• 1:26:53Speaker 05

  Oh.

• 1:26:54Speaker 01

  Oh, really?

• 1:26:54David Imel?

  He's very, he's very.

• 1:26:56Speaker 01

This guy's the master of cursed software.

• 1:26:58David Imel?

Yeah. And he's also very, he's like very anti-Facebook on socials.

• 1:27:03Speaker 01

  Yeah, I can see that.

• 1:27:04David Imel?

  Interesting.

• 1:27:05Speaker 02

Well, none of you got any points.

• 1:27:07Speaker 01

  I never would have got.

• 1:27:08Speaker 02

Even though there were many chances for a point, but.

• 1:27:10Speaker 01

I could be a YouTube founder.

• 1:27:11Speaker 02

Guys, which of the following meta-products that no longer exists didn't exist first? Hit it.

• 1:27:17David Imel?

  Was unexisted.

• 1:27:18Speaker 02

Yeah, it was unexisted first. Lasso, the TikTok competitor that, ah, sorry, just got a leg cramp.

• 1:27:27Speaker 02

Just sort of got folded into Instagram Reels, but is no longer a standalone platform.

• 1:27:30David Imel?

  To reel in the kids.

• 1:27:32Speaker 02

Yeah. Oh. Whoa, conspiracy. Lasso reel it in Instagram reels. Is this real life? The cryptocurrency, who cares?

• 1:27:44Speaker 05

  What was it called?

• 1:27:45Speaker 02

It's called, it was called Libra, and then they changed it to DM.

• 1:27:48David Imel?

Yeah, they care because they got to answer something.

• 1:27:53David Imel?

Did you right? Or did you wrong?

• 1:27:57Speaker 02

It's which one was shut down at an earlier date.

• 1:27:59Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 1:28:00Speaker 02

  An earlier date.

• 1:28:01Speaker 05

This felt like a trick question.

• 1:28:02Speaker 02

  All right, Marquez, you put?

• 1:28:03Speaker 01

  I put.

• 1:28:03David Imel?

  Libra.

• 1:28:04Speaker 02

That is incorrect, unfortunately. Libra was shut down in 2022.

• 1:28:08David Imel?

  I know.

• 1:28:08Andrew Manganelli?

The obvious one seems like Lasso.

• 1:28:11David Imel?

  That's because.

• 1:28:11Andrew Manganelli?

  So I played myself.

• 1:28:12David Imel?

  When was that?

• 1:28:13Andrew Manganelli?

  But I put Libra.

• 1:28:14Speaker 02

Lasso was shut down in 2020.

• 1:28:16David Imel?

  Yeah, Lasso barely lassoed it.

• 1:28:18Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:28:19Andrew Manganelli?

I thought you were gonna say it's like cruising around somehow or like just, yeah.

• 1:28:25David Imel?

Libra was weirdly like big news when it came out because there was all this regulatory stuff about countries being like nah, nah, nah.

• 1:28:32Speaker 02

And like so many huge American companies funded it.

• 1:28:36David Imel?

  Right.

• 1:28:36Speaker 02

  With Meta Visa wasn't, yeah.

• 1:28:38David Imel?

And then like it was big news for a while, then it disappeared for a really long time. And then randomly in 2022, yeah, 2022, I just saw some random story that was like Meta officially shuts down its Libra Kipto. And I was like, that's still around?

• 1:28:52Speaker 02

Technically, they didn't shut it down. They sold it to another company, like a, I don't know if it's private equity, but they told it, they sold it to some sort of ownership group with the expressed idea that that ownership group would shut it down and then write it off for losses on the 2023 tax year.

• 1:29:09David Imel?

  Hooray.

• 1:29:11Speaker 02

  Uh, so exciting.

• 1:29:12David Imel?

  We love it.

• 1:29:13Speaker 02

  Well, David.

• 1:29:14David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:29:14Speaker 02

  Now you just got.

• 1:29:16David Imel?

  A point.

• 1:29:16Speaker 02

One point. Bringing you to three points.

• 1:29:20David Imel?

  Heck, yes. Nice.

• 1:29:21Speaker 02

Marquez. In second place, you're currently rocking a solid four. Wow. Points.

• 1:29:31Speaker 02

  Andrew.

• 1:29:32David Imel?

  Not too far.

• 1:29:32Andrew Manganelli?

  Add those two together.

• 1:29:33Speaker 02

Big dog ginormous scores right now. Seven points.

• 1:29:39David Imel?

  That's pretty good.

• 1:29:40Speaker 02

Andrew has 50% of all points awarded in this season of waveform trivia. It's incredible.

• 1:29:47David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:29:48Speaker 02

  You love to see it.

• 1:29:49David Imel?

If I hadn't ruined OLED, we would have gained on Andrew. That's true.

• 1:29:52Andrew Manganelli?

  Well, you did.

• 1:29:53David Imel?

  I did.

• 1:29:53Speaker 02

  That's what you get.

• 1:29:54David Imel?

Look what you did to me, Marquez.

• 1:29:55Speaker 02

The question was actually just what does the O stand for?

• 1:29:57David Imel?

  Organic.

• 1:29:58Andrew Manganelli?

  That's it?

• 1:29:59Speaker 02

  That was the question.

• 1:29:59Andrew Manganelli?

Still would have got it wrong.

• 1:30:02David Imel?

I ruined us. The O stands for OLED.

• 1:30:06Andrew Manganelli?

  It's a back.

• 1:30:07Speaker 02

It goes all the way. It's like, do you remember the joke? I think I told the pod, what is the B and Benoit B Mendelbrot stand for?

• 1:30:16Speaker 02

It stands for Benoit B. Mandelbrot, the mathematician responsible for the Mandelbrot set, the fractal pattern that repeats itself the more you go down.

• 1:30:25Speaker 01

  Oh, that's funny.

• 1:30:25Speaker 02

This is a funny joke I've told on the podcast before.

• 1:30:28Speaker 01

That's funny. I remember when we talked about fractals. That was like three years ago.

• 1:30:31Speaker 02

  I know.

• 1:30:32Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:30:32Speaker 02

  I know.

• 1:30:33Speaker 01

Do you remember? Do you not remember that? Yeah.

• 1:30:36Andrew Manganelli?

  I remember hearing the joke.

• 1:30:37Speaker 01

Yeah, I'm sure it happened, though. Just like this episode for sure happened. Thanks for watching. Thanks for subscribing.
