Unpacking Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2025!

This week, we welcome Andrew back by digging deep into everything Galaxy Unpacked ranging from the new Z devices to the general vibe of the event overall. But first, we discuss the reaction to the Nothing Phone 3 review and David tries again to convince Marques that the Fairphone 6 minimal switch is a good idea. Lastly, Andrew tries to explain some breaking F1 news in real time to David and Marques in terms of tech. It was a fun one! Support for the show comes from Jira by Atlassian. AI is only as useful as the context it has to work from, but when that context is scattered across tools, threads, and DMs, that means your team and your AI agents end up flying blind. That's the problem that Jira solves. What's the goal tied to your project? What got decided last week in Slack? Atlassian's teamwork graph pulls all these pieces together, from Jira, Confluence, Slack, GitHub, and more, so nothing falls through the cracks. With Jira, you can actually share that context with the AI agents you already use, like Claude, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot, assign them work directly, or connect your agents through MCP. Spend less time digging through endless links and DMs, less time chasing down what got decided and by who, and more time actually shipping. Learn more at jira.com.

That's J-I-R-A dot com. The phones, though, a bunch of interesting updates, like actually new hardware. So let's start with the Fold 7. Fold 7 is, they did the thing where it is actually different and new and better to use both closed and open. So the outside display is wider, the bezels are thinner, and the entire phone is dramatically thinner. So using it closed feels closer than ever to a regular phone.

What is up, people of the internet? Welcome back to another episode of the Waveform Podcast. We're your hosts, I'm Marques.

• 1:56Andrew Manganelli?

  I'm Andrew.

• 1:56Speaker 01

And I'm Nintendo Switch 2. Oh, we're back. Okay, so this episode-

• 2:00Andrew Manganelli?

  Available on Amazon now.

• 2:01Speaker 01

  Oh, that is true.

• 2:02Andrew Manganelli?

  That is true.

• 2:03Speaker 01

But this episode, we're talking about some other stuff. We have Samsung Unpacked this week. We have some Last Nothing Phone 3 Thoughts. We also have Fairphone 6 in the house. And we're gonna try another sports analogy with the Formula One.

• 2:16Speaker 02

  Oh, no.

• 2:17Speaker 01

Because it seems to be working. And we're good at explaining things with tech, so we're gonna try it. We're gonna try it.

• 2:21Speaker 02

It's just good that David knows zero things about sports. Like, there's like an infinite well-

• 2:26Speaker 01

Dude, that guy broke his foot.

• 2:29Speaker 02

  No, he tore his Achilles.

• 2:31Speaker 01

Is that what he's talking about?

• 2:32Speaker 02

  He's talking about Tyrese.

• 2:34Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 2:34Andrew Manganelli?

  Tyree?

• 2:35Speaker 01

  Close enough.

• 2:36Speaker 02

  No, that's Kyrie.

• 2:37Speaker 01

This is perfect. Anyway, we'll get there. But first, this fun fact is episode number 299 of the Waveform Podcast. And so we had a fun idea for episode number 300. Next week, we're gonna livestream it. We're gonna livestream our 300th-ever Waveform recording. So if you haven't already subscribed to this channel, if you want to see a chaotic, inspired by South by Southwest attempt at going live and talking to you guys and celebrating number 300 and talking tech and doing all the stuff, get subscribed. Because you'll be able to see that, and it'll be a good time. Hopefully, nothing breaks.

• 3:14Andrew Manganelli?

And if you want to actually like mark it on your calendar and not just be staring at your phone for the bell-

• 3:18Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 3:19Andrew Manganelli?

Tuesday, July 15th, 11:00 AM EST is our hope.

• 3:25Speaker 01

  That's what we're gonna try.

• 3:25Andrew Manganelli?

We've run a practice run. We are running another practice run. That's when it should go live.

• 3:30Speaker 01

Yeah, we'll try to not be like the WEN Show and be like 45 minutes late every week.

• 3:33Speaker 02

  Damn!

• 3:34Speaker 01

Shots fired. I didn't know it did that.

• 3:36Andrew Manganelli?

Don't say that, David, because now we're gonna, if we're 45 minutes late-

• 3:39Speaker 01

  I said, "We will try."

• 3:41Speaker 02

Then Linus is gonna be like, "We're not gonna be like Waveform."

• 3:43Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 3:44Speaker 02

  46 minutes late.

• 3:44Speaker 01

But Linus laughs at himself every week and says, "We're 45 minutes late this week." I'm sure there's a good reason why they're late, and we're gonna find out that reason.

• 3:51Andrew Manganelli?

  Ourselves.

• 3:52Speaker 01

And then we're 45 minutes late as well.

• 3:54Andrew Manganelli?

  Absolutely.

• 3:55Speaker 01

But yeah, that's when you can mark your calendar if you want to join us. It'll be a fun time. Okay, we have the Nothing Phone 3 again. The review is up now since the last episode. If you have any other thoughts or closing, interesting things to say about it, this would be the time. I generally, okay, here's my complaint with the Nothing Phone 3 and the reviews and what happened afterwards. I reviewed the phone. It is a pretty decent phone, but it is expensive for what you're getting. And so I talked about that. I talked about how they're using this first true flagship as a a marketing term, basically, and you know, expect the best phone ever, whatever, but it's not

• 4:38Speaker 01

actually giving us the best parts. So I talked about that. But then also aesthetically speaking, I mean, if you watch some other people's reviews, if you watch Mr. Mobile's review especially, it is a unique looking phone and you don't really get that very often, especially in the slab world. And so you kind of have to give them at least a little bit of credit for that, too. So many other phones just just look the same. And I love using analogies. It's my favorite thing to do. So my analogy that I made was when we've talked about how everything in like, yeah, carcinization, they're all turning into crabs. All these crustaceans are evolving into crabs and it's hilarious. And we joked about that before. I brought that into the video as like, look, all these other smartphones, these these actual flagships, the play it safe, we need to sell as many as possible

• 5:22Speaker 01

flagships are generic. They're all turning into the same thing. And you look at them all next to each other and they all look the same. And year after year, they continue to look the same. So when something comes along that's a little different, you know, you might not love it, but at least it's different. At least they're trying something. And so maybe I called it like a lobster, a different crustacean, a lobster. And it's just different from the rest of the crabs. And I give it credit for that, but I think then the nothing people like loved that particular analogy and like ran with just that part of the video, which whatever, to their credit, they're marketers. They do what they want to do. But uh, yeah, what are your, what are your thoughts on the lobster versus crab?

• 6:01Andrew Manganelli?

Just to go on that, they didn't just, they went off on it.

• 6:04Speaker 01

Well, one of them made it their bio or their username?

• 6:08Andrew Manganelli?

I think he's the co-founder of nothing, wrote just like, uh, he put a lobster on his, you know, like username on Twitter and said, people will eventually get it lobster. And then someone said, it as Gen 4 doesn't justify the price tag. And he said, the lobster does.

• 6:27David Imel?

Which like, what do you mean?

• 6:30Speaker 02

No, dude, it's because, you know what it is? It's that lobsters are kinda freaky. Like, you ever seen a lobster up close?

• 6:38David Imel?

  They're, they look weird.

• 6:39Speaker 02

  They're freaky, bro.

• 6:40Andrew Manganelli?

  They're crabs.

• 6:40Speaker 02

  But nah.

• 6:41David Imel?

  I like the blue ones.

• 6:42Speaker 01

Yeah, but a lobster is even weirder than a crab.

• 6:44Speaker 02

No, no, crab makes sense. Crab is logic. You know what I mean? Crab, it's, it's got, it's got legs, you can see. It's got, why does, why does a lobster have fins, bro?

• 6:55David Imel?

  Were they have fins?

• 6:56Andrew Manganelli?

I was actually reading about this.

• 6:58Speaker 02

Why does it have pinchy hands and food hands?

• 7:00David Imel?

  Cause they're in the water.

• 7:01Speaker 02

It has separate hands for, and separate hands for a goblet. Lobsters are weird.

• 7:04David Imel?

  I mean, that's dope.

• 7:05Speaker 02

No, but they're freaky, they're little alien sea bugs. And so like, I think there are people who take pride in having the freaky option, you know? I, I really think that's what you're, that's what you're hitting on.

• 7:16David Imel?

Yeah, I love eating bugs. I have a, okay, this is Nothing's YouTube channel. If you scroll down a little bit, three of the videos have your face in their thumbnails.

• 7:28Speaker 01

Yeah, well, okay, so I was gonna talk about this. Actually, one of the top comments was, I can't wait to see the Nothing CEO react to this one cause they react to all the reviews and that's the thing that they've done before. The other, though, was, they, they, taking it out of context like that kind of feels, if you don't know what's happening, feels like, like we collaborated with them or something. This is what happens. We make our video and we try to make the best video possible. And then, this happens a lot, the company sees the review and goes, ooh, we like that quote. Can we use it? And they might wanna take part of the video or take a quote and use it on their website or use it in something or whatever, or make it their Twitter, but whatever they're doing. None of that, I don't tell them or, or make my videos for them to do that. That's just something they decided to do, just so that is clear.

• 8:11Andrew Manganelli?

I think it's pretty clear, cause the title of the video was, "They lied." And then they were like, oh, cool, you talked about a lobster. And then they made their, like... Yeah, yeah, yeah. The, uh, what's this thing called again? It's the glyph matrix. The glyph matrix, they started posting pictures of it with the lobster and the glyph matrix. And then this is the Nothing India account that posted it next to a bunch of iPhones with crabs on them. And Samsung's. Screenshot.

• 8:35Speaker 01

Which they're not, they're not wrong about that.

• 8:38Speaker 04

This is a little bit refreshing though, now that I've had like roughly 24 hours to sit with it. It's so nice for this to happen with something positive. Cause normally you, you do a review of a, of a product and you say a lot of good things about it. And then you say like one negative thing and the company just like gets so mad and all the fans are online hating you. And like, what is happening? Or how could you say it? It's like, I did a whole video saying how good of a phone it is. I just don't like this one thing. And this is flipped. It's like you, you did this one small compliment and that's the one they're going with.

• 9:11Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. When the title is they lied. Notice how they haven't linked to the, the, the review and any of the posts referencing it to show people where the reference came from. That's true.

• 9:21Speaker 01

I also have a small correction from the video. I said in the video that they had 2160 hertz PWM dimming, which is a useful feature for people who are affected by that. A lot of OLEDs, when you go all the way to the bottom of the lowest brightness, a flicker. And so when they can have good, high quality PWM dimming, that's less irritating for those people's eyes. The phone actually doesn't. It actually has 960 hertz PWM dimming. It was changed at the last second. So I got a, a little quote from Nothing to explain themselves. Cause I put in the video, something that turned out to not be true. They said, uh, there have been a change to the PWM dimming rate. It's now 960 hertz. While the display is capable of the original rate quoted, we found display performance at low brightness produces the best quality picture with this updated rate.

• 10:06Speaker 01

So we have prioritized picture quality for the final retail software. So hopefully that works. Hopefully that's still great for people who are bothered by low quality dimming.

• 10:16Andrew Manganelli?

Do you know how we learned about that correction, though?

• 10:18Speaker 01

  How?

• 10:19Andrew Manganelli?

I had to find someone talking about it on Reddit. And then I said, this is what our reviewers guys said. We just double checked it. And then I guess TechSbert said that they changed it. I don't know how he got that comment in the first place. And then we had to ask them about it changing.

• 10:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 10:33Andrew Manganelli?

There's still other articles out there that still say 2160, so.

• 10:36Speaker 01

Yep. Wouldn't blame them. It's again, this is something, nothing changed at the last second. Ideally, everyone can update their articles, but here's my correction. So you know.

• 10:46Speaker 01

Yeah, I don't know. The design of the phone itself is kind of, it's grown on me a little bit. There's obviously a light one and a dark one. I like the dark one better. I think the light one is.

• 10:54Andrew Manganelli?

  It's grown on you.

• 10:55Speaker 01

The dark one has. I think the light one still looks weird and jarring because of the contrast and then just how weird and misaligned the lenses are.

• 11:04Andrew Manganelli?

Love it, man. I love it.

• 11:05Speaker 01

But uh, yeah, it's a, it's a good phone. It's just not a good price.

• 11:09Andrew Manganelli?

I think it's easy to see all the backlash and think it's the design, but I don't, that's not what people are.

• 11:13Speaker 01

No, people are not mad at that.

• 11:14Andrew Manganelli?

People are so mad at the price and that the, for these specs, there's plenty of other phones that are far cheaper than.

• 11:20Speaker 01

This happens a lot. And a lot of people talked about this, like, this is a $799 or 80,000 rupee phone. For that price, you can get an, you can get iPhone 16. You can get a Pixel 9. You can get a Galaxy S25. These are like the megaphones that like sell millions and millions of units, except for the Pixel, but that's their goal. It's to be mainstream flagship phones.

• 11:39Andrew Manganelli?

They're doing better, except for the fact that it just got banned in Japan.

• 11:41Speaker 01

  Tough, tough.

• 11:42Andrew Manganelli?

  With the old ones.

• 11:43Speaker 01

But the point is, when you uh, charge that amount of money, you're gonna get compared to those phones. And one of the top comments on my review was, this is a terrible phone for 7.99 and a great phone for 4.99. And that, that happens a lot where the price kind of like ruins the, the banter about how good the phone is. I think this is a pretty good phone. And if it was 5.99, we wouldn't be having nearly as many of these flagship discussions. But nothing wants to be a flagship.

• 12:09Andrew Manganelli?

Like, it's just, it's just the chipset that people are mad about, right?

• 12:12Speaker 01

No, it's a bunch of stuff.

• 12:14Andrew Manganelli?

I mean, I understand that like.

• 12:15Speaker 01

  Like, that's the main thing.

• 12:16Andrew Manganelli?

They're pulling the OnePlus, they're, it's straight out of the OnePlus.

• 12:19Speaker 01

Yeah, that audience hates the flagship.

• 12:21Andrew Manganelli?

Of course. Like, that's what they're gonna do.

• 12:23Speaker 01

I feel like they're doing it always the plan.

• 12:24Andrew Manganelli?

Worse than OnePlus, though, because OnePlus was like. You just don't get wireless charging. They were like very specific.

• 12:31Speaker 01

Well, and they started making them expensive, too.

• 12:33Andrew Manganelli?

They did. I mean, I kind of feel like Carl pay is speedrunning the one plus like route that happened. Which was like, we're for the community, just kidding. We're for expensive phones.

• 12:42Speaker 01

OnePlus got to the point where they were charging high money for phones, but they would have like no NFC, no wireless charging and no IP certification, but the rest of the phone minus the cameras would be like above the other flagships. This is a phone that is, if every flagship is trying to be a 10 out of 10, this is like an eight and a half in everything, which when you do it slightly below flagships in every category, it feels like it's not quite a flagship. It's a below flagship chip, which, okay, fine, you're allowed to do that. But then it's also below slightly below flagship display. It's the LTPS. It's got Gorilla Glass 7i instead of the hardest one for a face down phone.

• 13:21Speaker 01

And then it's like, it's a 5150 milliamp hour battery, which is pretty great, but doesn't charge quite as fast as the flagships. It depends on the flagship you're talking about, too. Um, and then you just go down the list and there's just a couple of little things, one by one, that all nick away at not quite being a flagship. So.

• 13:39Andrew Manganelli?

  That's why it's tough.

• 13:41Speaker 01

Maybe I shouldn't have this hot take.

• 13:43Andrew Manganelli?

  Do it.

• 13:43Speaker 01

Do it. I just think that.

• 13:45Andrew Manganelli?

Wait, wait, wait. Hold on, hold on. Do it.

• 13:48Speaker 01

I just think Samsung phones are so boring.

• 13:50Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 13:51Speaker 01

  They're so, and.

• 13:52Andrew Manganelli?

Which one would you rather buy right now?

• 13:53Speaker 01

I'm not talking about the flip and the fold, which.

• 13:55Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah, which we're getting to.

• 13:56Speaker 01

  No, you're talking about this.

• 13:57Andrew Manganelli?

  We'll get to that.

• 13:58Speaker 01

  This right here.

• 13:58Andrew Manganelli?

  What about that?

• 13:59Speaker 01

  Or like an S25?

• 14:00Andrew Manganelli?

  The regular one, yeah.

• 14:01Speaker 01

Mm hmm. That's part of why people buy it.

• 14:04Andrew Manganelli?

  Unbelievably boring.

• 14:04Speaker 01

I think that's a, that's what, that's a take. We're the enthusiasts who go, that Prius, that Camry, that's super boring. Why would I want that? And then there's the millions and masses who are just like, that Prius, that Camry, super dependable, reliable, same thing I'm used to, not going to break or try anything crazy, slightly better than last year. That's the one I want.

• 14:24Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. I mean, I think I would rather have the better software, the better UI, the weirder back, the weird.

• 14:30David Imel?

  Glyph toys that are pointless.

• 14:31Speaker 01

Well, that's what you're paying for with the nothing.

• 14:33David Imel?

  Yeah, and I think that.

• 14:34Speaker 01

  According to that tweet.

• 14:35David Imel?

I think that for people like me, I would like I I would buy that over the S25. I might not buy over a Pixel because the Pixel is like, you know, it has a bunch of special features and it's also kind of interesting and all this stuff. Maybe, but like over a S25, absolutely. So I don't know.

• 14:52Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 14:53David Imel?

I understand their logic. I think the design is valuable to some people.

• 14:58Andrew Manganelli?

I think it's valuable, but there's phones like $400 less.

• 15:03David Imel?

Yeah, and also when the 3A Pro is like really good.

• 15:07Speaker 01

  Also cool design.

• 15:08David Imel?

  Yeah, the cool design.

• 15:09Speaker 01

  That's really.

• 15:10David Imel?

  And the same OS.

• 15:11Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 15:12David Imel?

And like the glyph matrix on the back, it's pointless. Like, it's fun, but you're gonna use it once as a little party trick and then you're not gonna use it.

• 15:18Speaker 01

So here's the argument. Here's the niche that this phone deserves to exist. The 3A Pro, really good phone and really nice design. And I think the end of my video basically summarizes all of my thoughts, which is this is the phone not for the people who want like a flagship in like all of the ways of a flagship and don't want the brutal like highest end specs, but they just want nice software and a unique design. This is more of a flagship than the 3A Pro. It's a better chip. It's faster. It has a better display. It has bigger camera sensors. It is more of a flagship than that, but it is also too expensive.

• 15:50David Imel?

  Right.

• 15:51Speaker 01

So if you can get it for cheaper, it actually deserves to exist in that little niche right there.

• 15:55David Imel?

Well, and my question also becomes, and forgive me if I'm just a bit ignorant on this, but like every year we talk about like, oh, the chip only matters if like you want to do high end gaming. But my question that I pose to people who do high end gaming on their phones is like, are are chips bad at gaming right now? Because it seems like they're all doing pretty high frame rates on even the best games on mobile. Like, it does.

• 16:18Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 16:18David Imel?

I feel like the chip that's in this phone is gonna do fine.

• 16:22Speaker 01

No, it is. The reason they use that chip, and maybe I'm speaking for them a little bit, but I think it's pretty clear that most people, most of the time, will not notice the difference between this and a Snapdragon 8 Elite. But because that margin exists, you can talk about that gap of like the absolute highest end game that is the heaviest and hardest to run, because most games run fine on most chips.

• 16:43David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 16:44Speaker 01

Or in five years and you're still using the phone and things are starting to slow down on this chip versus the 8 Elite, or, you know, the slightly better battery efficiency overall of the Snapdragon 8 Elite versus this chip. On those margins. You're like, alright, I'm paying eight hundred bucks for a phone. If I'm gonna get an eight hundred dollar phone, I might as well get one with an elite. Like the Snapdragon. Okay. Galaxy S25 has better cameras, better display, better chip. And overall is just gonna run reliably and get software updates for X years and it's like super boring.

• 17:16Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 17:17Speaker 01

You can sacrifice all those things for a unique design and a fun, unique, interesting software experience.

• 17:24Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 17:25Speaker 01

And some people will make that choice and some people won't.

• 17:27Andrew Manganelli?

  Right.

• 17:28Speaker 01

So that's where this phone exists.

• 17:29Andrew Manganelli?

I think that's perfectly set. I think nothing's audience, though. Like, let's think of where nothing's audience came from and it is literally, though, that is the exact opposite.

• 17:38Speaker 01

Because exactly what OnePlus did and look what that, where that put OnePlus. Like, nobody cares about the company anymore that much.

• 17:44Andrew Manganelli?

I think they're, they're, I almost feel like OnePlus has made like a resurgence into the.

• 17:48Speaker 01

  A little bit.

• 17:49Andrew Manganelli?

  But yes.

• 17:49Speaker 01

  OnePlus 13 is so good.

• 17:51Andrew Manganelli?

Like, yeah, the phones are made, yeah, they're super good. But like OG OnePlus, like, community flagship killer. It wasn't. Here's a flagship.

• 17:58Speaker 01

  Yeah, exactly.

• 17:59Andrew Manganelli?

And I think a lot of those went with Carl to nothing and.

• 18:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 18:02Andrew Manganelli?

Those people are very upset right now.

• 18:05Speaker 01

That people do things for money. Good job.

• 18:09Andrew Manganelli?

  I have one last take.

• 18:10Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 18:10Andrew Manganelli?

  It's not, it's.

• 18:13Andrew Manganelli?

My final opinion on this, because I didn't have one last week. I like your lobster analogy because like lobsters, this phone is overpriced for incredibly mediocre flavor.

• 18:24Speaker 01

  Oh, you're a lobster hater.

• 18:26Andrew Manganelli?

I like lobster a lot. It's just buttery seawater.

• 18:29Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 18:29Andrew Manganelli?

  Wow. And.

• 18:30Speaker 01

  Do you like?

• 18:31Andrew Manganelli?

I can put butter on toast.

• 18:32Speaker 01

  Like, do you like crabs?

• 18:34Andrew Manganelli?

I don't love it. Crab and lobster taste like. I like shrimp.

• 18:36Speaker 01

  Similar, right?

• 18:37Andrew Manganelli?

They're pretty similar. I don't really like crab.

• 18:39Speaker 01

  Better than lobster.

• 18:39Andrew Manganelli?

Seawater meat that you can put butter on.

• 18:42Speaker 01

  Lobsters get glorified.

• 18:43Andrew Manganelli?

  Kakao.

• 18:43Speaker 01

  Seawater meat?

• 18:45Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, they're bugs. I'd rather put butter on bread.

• 18:47Speaker 01

Okay, but they've been like, they've been sauteed in saltwater for a very long time. So it's very like.

• 18:53Andrew Manganelli?

  Sauteed.

• 18:54Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 18:55Andrew Manganelli?

Not a lobster fan. Enjoy your bugs. Enjoy your sea bugs.

• 18:58David Imel?

I love the sea bugs. Trying so hard to stay out of this. Let's just keep moving. I enjoy the sea bugs.

• 19:02Andrew Manganelli?

  I found it.

• 19:03David Imel?

This is like a train wreck of a take. I haven't had lobster in a long time, so I actually don't remember.

• 19:08Andrew Manganelli?

  It's so stupid.

• 19:09David Imel?

But it is expensive. Okay. We meant for this section to be short.

• 19:13Andrew Manganelli?

Eh, I knew it wouldn't be short.

• 19:15Speaker 01

Do you want to jump in real quick to close this out? We also have the Fairphone 6 in hand.

• 19:20David Imel?

Oh my god. I'm still mad.

• 19:22Andrew Manganelli?

We'll talk about it in the break.

• 19:23Speaker 01

We'll probably come back to a little bit like a trivia question and be like, true or false? Lobster is the greatest seafood?

• 19:29David Imel?

  Alright.

• 19:29Speaker 01

But you do have the Fairphone 6.

• 19:31David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 19:31Speaker 01

Real quick, what do you think of this phone?

• 19:33David Imel?

I've got the Fairphone 6 and I just wanted to show you guys, I wanted to prove you wrong about how cool the Essential Switch is. That puts you in.

• 19:41Andrew Manganelli?

I agreed with you on this one.

• 19:42David Imel?

  Okay, so.

• 19:42Speaker 01

  Yeah, okay, go ahead.

• 19:43David Imel?

This is the big switch. It's a nice little color. It's got this like yellowish teal color. It's big. It's right above the power button, which is, which also has a fingerprint reader, by the way, which is nice.

• 19:53Speaker 01

  Very nice.

• 19:55David Imel?

It's got a horrible unlock sound.

• 19:56Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah, that sounds really bad.

• 19:57Speaker 01

Can you put that on the mic?

• 19:58David Imel?

  Yeah, it's bad.

• 20:00Speaker 01

That just sounds like just bad. Please.

• 20:03David Imel?

  It's really bad.

• 20:03Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 20:04David Imel?

Okay, Fairphone, please fix. But when you hit the Essential Switch,

• 20:10David Imel?

it like drops down from the top and like switches you into this Essential.

• 20:13Speaker 01

  Nice little animation.

• 20:14David Imel?

And it's dope as hell and it's called Essentials and it's basically like a, it's sort of like a, what are they calling on the iPhone? It's the.

• 20:23Andrew Manganelli?

  Focus mode?

• 20:23David Imel?

Focus mode, essentially. So you can click it and you can modify it. And out of the box, it's got these features like it puts you into do not disturb mode. It makes it so only certain contacts can contact you. So it's basically like, it's doing what you say you could like, you know, do on an Android launcher or skin, whatever, but it's out of the box already pretty set up for you. Does it extend battery life?

• 20:45Speaker 01

  It's pre-installed.

• 20:46David Imel?

  I mean.

• 20:48David Imel?

But look how cool. And then you just switch it off and it's like. Meow.

• 20:53Andrew Manganelli?

  It's a tad delayed.

• 20:54David Imel?

Can I ask a couple of questions about this?

• 20:56Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 20:56David Imel?

One, that button that you're pressing, you can't map to anything else, it'll always do that?

• 21:00Speaker 01

  It's a switch.

• 21:01David Imel?

  It's a switch.

• 21:02Speaker 01

  It's a switch.

• 21:03David Imel?

It's a switch. Are you pressing it or flipping it?

• 21:05Andrew Manganelli?

  Pushing it up and down.

• 21:06Speaker 01

  Pushing it up and down.

• 21:06David Imel?

Up and down. Oh, I didn't notice. Oh, that's okay. But it doesn't do anything else, though. That's what it does all the time.

• 21:12Andrew Manganelli?

It's the same color as Elsa's shirt, actually.

• 21:14Speaker 01

  That's true. It's neon yellow.

• 21:17David Imel?

Question number two, are they packaging this as an APK anywhere else that you can like get on another phone? Or is this just the Fairphone 6?

• 21:22Speaker 01

It's just on the Fairphone 6.

• 21:24David Imel?

Okay. But you can change the apps that show up here.

• 21:27Speaker 01

  Good.

• 21:27David Imel?

And it's nice because, again, it's like kind of bridging that line where it's not trying to be the light phone, where you have to like, you have to upload your own music and upload your own podcasts and whatever. It's more like the minimal phone, but it's not in black and white, but it still makes, you can just decide, oh, I'm on my phone too much, essential time. And then you're not just like opening apps like crazy.

• 21:49Andrew Manganelli?

  Here's my only...

• 21:50David Imel?

You know, I think it's great.

• 21:51Andrew Manganelli?

It's not a gripe. I actually do really like this. I like that it's a physical button.

• 21:55David Imel?

  Yeah. Yes!

• 21:56Andrew Manganelli?

  I can, here's how I go.

• 21:57Speaker 01

  It's a switch.

• 21:58Andrew Manganelli?

Physical switch, sorry. It's actually a pretty satisfying switch.

• 22:01Speaker 01

  It is a nice switch.

• 22:02Andrew Manganelli?

  But...

• 22:03Speaker 01

  They need to change the...

• 22:03Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, I'm on my phone too much. Okay, cool. Now I can't be on my phone.

• 22:09Andrew Manganelli?

Instagram. Just one swipe up, like, yeah, sorry. Like, I kind, I almost wish that you could set a thing to be like, when I pop this down, minimum one hour before it can switch.

• 22:19David Imel?

Or you have to like restart your phone or something.

• 22:21Andrew Manganelli?

  Something like annoying.

• 22:22Speaker 02

You guys, we have to stay in the ethos, guys. It needs to be a hardware lock that goes over the switch and stops you from flipping it back.

• 22:30David Imel?

I think adding friction, for me, is the sweet spot. Because I don't really want something that's like forcing me to not being able to do a thing. I just want some friction added so that if I'm mentally deciding I want to like not be as addicted to my phone for the next few hours.

• 22:47Andrew Manganelli?

I would argue this is like no friction, though. Like, if it was in the mode and I was like, oh, I wanted to look at something on Instagram, I could probably, I could fingerprint and flip this up before the screen even turned on.

• 22:58David Imel?

Yeah, but you'd have to like, you'd have to mentally decide, oh, I'm breaking my own thing.

• 23:04Speaker 02

No, no, no. But as someone who did a pretty big phone detox recently, after like a week of... Of like hardcore note, like the muscle memory goes away. That goes away like shockingly fast. I, I think if you did a for realsies detox and then were using that, you'd be absolutely fine. And this is coming from someone who has very little self-control.

• 23:26David Imel?

I would say similar to our gym analogy at the end of that video, a lot of this just comes down to discipline and how bad do you really want to detox and not use your phone a lot? Because you could just decide you don't want to use your phone much and any number of solutions would be effective for you. But if you really aren't that committed to it, then whether it's a switch or an app or a launcher or a button or whatever, they're not going to work. So it's up to you.

• 23:52Speaker 02

I still think you can get addicted to your phone in a serious neurochemical way where discipline might not be the only way. But I do.

• 24:05David Imel?

  And then this won't work.

• 24:09Speaker 04

As someone that also did the dumb phone challenge, I just now don't have the apps on my phone and problem solved. Like I like.

• 24:17David Imel?

  That's the level of.

• 24:18Speaker 04

That does help. That does help. It does help. But like, I wish that this was a little bit extra. Like if you're gonna do this, I don't like that it's just a switch away. You know, like it needs to go in one more level to really be effective.

• 24:30David Imel?

I mean, you do have to acknowledge that like fair phone, that it was not, they're not really marketing it as their main thing as for the fair phone. It's still a fair phone. Like the whole point of the fair phone is that it's sustainably made.

• 24:41Speaker 04

  That's true.

• 24:41David Imel?

  It's supposed to be like.

• 24:43Speaker 04

  Repairable.

• 24:43David Imel?

  Faster and more repairable.

• 24:45Speaker 02

Speaking of which, how's the camera? Have you used it yet?

• 24:47David Imel?

Uh, not much. No. I don't really like cameras on phones.

• 24:53Speaker 04

  I have a feeling it's just fine.

• 24:55David Imel?

It's probably just fine. Overall, the phone, I mean.

• 24:58Speaker 04

I'm a sucker for green, so I like kind of love it.

• 25:01David Imel?

They did have a whole thing about it being like more of a flagship and it, it feels like a pretty cheap.

• 25:07Speaker 04

These are two phones in a row now that are more of a flagship, which just sounds like not a flagship.

• 25:12David Imel?

More of a flagship though. Like the fair phone six actually looks. The screen looks different.

• 25:17Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 25:18David Imel?

I mean, it looks nice. It looks like the crab. I'll tell you that. Well, but it's green. It has neon.

• 25:23Speaker 04

  Matt crab.

• 25:24David Imel?

And you can change the back out for this wallet. Or for this like finger thing.

• 25:31Speaker 01

Like a pop socket built in.

• 25:32David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 25:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 25:34David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 25:34Speaker 01

  That's cool.

• 25:35David Imel?

Or a lanyard, if you want to wear it around.

• 25:37Speaker 01

  Never seen anyone do that.

• 25:38David Imel?

Yeah. Just the cool kids and the Samsung commercials do that.

• 25:41Speaker 01

  Kids in Brooklyn.

• 25:42David Imel?

Yeah, true. I have seen kids in Brooklyn doing it.

• 25:45Speaker 01

  I believe you.

• 25:45David Imel?

Yeah. Anyway, I just wanted to show you guys and uh.

• 25:48Andrew Manganelli?

I like this. I like the switch. I would try it, but I would also probably break it. It's it feels like one of those. I have a friend who's at his office. They had those chairs that are supposed to make your posture better. And he just said it was you very quickly learn how to make your posture even worse by breaking how you sit in the chair.

• 26:06Speaker 01

That is a great analogy for these.

• 26:08David Imel?

  Like.

• 26:09Speaker 02

People will always try to like, break what they're.

• 26:11Speaker 01

No, it's up to you. If you want your posture to be better, a small gimmick is not going to help your posture be better. You have to decide, alright, I'm going to commit to this and then you will be able to do it.

• 26:20Speaker 02

There is one small gimmick that can make your posture better and.

• 26:23Speaker 01

  What is that?

• 26:23Speaker 02

  They're called sit ups.

• 26:25Speaker 01

  Um, oh.

• 26:26Speaker 02

  Other than that.

• 26:27Speaker 01

Will you do sit ups if you're not committed? If you're doing sit ups, you don't need that chair. You're you're just gonna do it. You're gonna sit up.

• 26:33Speaker 02

  This one trick.

• 26:35Andrew Manganelli?

  Sit ups.

• 26:35Speaker 01

  Sit ups. Yeah.

• 26:37Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay.

• 26:38Speaker 01

  Anyway.

• 26:38Andrew Manganelli?

  Cool.

• 26:38Speaker 01

That's interesting. I might be I might be tempted to make a video about this phone because there's a lot of interesting concepts around it. And obviously it's the newest of uh, I made a video about the Farah phone previously, but.

• 26:48David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 26:48Speaker 01

Um, maybe, maybe let me know in the comments if you guys want to know my thoughts and and a deep dive on the Farah phone six.

• 26:55David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 26:55Speaker 01

  Drop a comment below.

• 26:56David Imel?

  I think it's cool.

• 26:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 26:57David Imel?

  Alright.

• 26:58Speaker 01

Alright, well, we got a bunch more to talk about. Samsung dropped about 30,000 gadgets on us, so we're gonna talk about that after the break. But before we get to that, trivia time.

• 27:10Speaker 02

I just want you guys to know, you know, I had a trivia question written and I was so mad, A, about lobsters being denied their freakiness. And then you, Andrew.

• 27:19Andrew Manganelli?

  No, no, no, no.

• 27:20Speaker 01

  You're a freak.

• 27:20Speaker 02

Wait, wait, wait, wait. Say anything about this.

• 27:23Andrew Manganelli?

I did not say lobsters are not freaky. I said crabs are also freaky.

• 27:26Speaker 02

  Crabs are not freaky.

• 27:27Andrew Manganelli?

  Yes, they are.

• 27:27Speaker 02

  They're definitionally not freaky.

• 27:29David Imel?

  Definitionally.

• 27:30Speaker 01

If you've looked at undersea creatures before, there's a there's a spectrum of freaky.

• 27:35David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 27:35Andrew Manganelli?

  That's true.

• 27:36Speaker 02

  Show me one freaky crab.

• 27:37Speaker 01

  Crabs are kind of mid.

• 27:39Speaker 02

And then also, also, Andrew, also, Andrew, what what is this tasty sea meat? Are you kidding?

• 27:46Andrew Manganelli?

  No, no.

• 27:46Speaker 02

  There are plenty of foods.

• 27:47Andrew Manganelli?

  Disgusting sea meat.

• 27:48Speaker 02

There are plenty of foods that are good that you can describe like that, like oysters and uni. Okay? Lobster is a whole other, anyway. I love sucking the body out of it. This is all to say, I wrote. I went to go find a freaky lobster fact.

• 28:02Speaker 01

  Freak said.

• 28:04Speaker 02

This trivia question. And I found so many that now there is a segment in the next trivia extravaganza all about how freaky lobsters are. Okay, so you guys did this to yourself. We're doing lobster facts next round.

• 28:16Speaker 01

You shouldn't have told us that.

• 28:16Speaker 02

  But.

• 28:17Speaker 01

We're gonna, I'm gonna do a research paper on lobsters now.

• 28:20Speaker 02

I'd like to see you try. Actually, that'd be really fun if you just came in like, okay, guys, but we had a Samsung event today.

• 28:28Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 28:28Speaker 02

Mm hmm. Which means this first trivia question will obviously be about Fairphone.

• 28:36Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 28:37Speaker 02

Specifically, we're throwing it back. We're rewinding all the way back to Fairphone one.

• 28:43Speaker 01

  Oh, Fairphone fun.

• 28:45Speaker 02

  The dream.

• 28:47Speaker 01

I don't even know how to get this back off.

• 28:48Speaker 02

How many units were produced in the first production run of the first Fairphone? Price is Right rules, closest without going over.

• 28:59Speaker 01

  Oh. Interesting question.

• 29:02Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 29:03Speaker 01

Okay. I'm gonna have to think about that because there's, there's like, a company that would publish that number would probably be somewhat proud of it, but considering it was the first Fairphone, it probably wasn't that impressive of a number.

• 29:16Speaker 02

It wasn't like GoFundMe. Wasn't it sort of crowdfunded too?

• 29:21Speaker 01

You don't remember, but maybe Fairphone, I mean, it's an idea that sounds like a crowd would get behind it and it could be successful with that concept. Well, we'll think about that. Answers will be at the end like usual. We'll be right back.

• 32:03Speaker 01

All right, welcome back. We gotta talk about Samsung's event and the things they announced. And that's two distinct, different things. The event was really not great, but the things they announced were pretty solid. So we can talk about both of those things. Samsung Z Fold 7, Z Flip 7, Watch 8, Watch 8 Ultra, Z Flip FE. We got all the things to talk about.

• 32:27Speaker 01

And I made a video, a first hands-on and impressions with a lot of this stuff, especially the phones, which I thought were actually pretty impressive. And then we watched the event and my God. Yeah. My God. It was bad. It's been a long time since I saw that level. I was trying to pinpoint what the feeling was of watching this event. Dread. Cause there's a lot of like cringey events, lots of cringey events, especially Samsung. Lots of cringey Samsung events. But this one had like an extra heavy dose of really insincere feelings. Yeah. Like they would get on stage and go, wow, that's exciting.

• 33:07Speaker 01

Next up, like the one-liners and then the interviews and then the people who are trying to, especially with the AI, they would talk about like an AI feature about you could Google something and then they go, see a true genuine AI companion. And I'm like, that's not what that is. That's just Googling something. It felt to me that nobody in the event believed what they were saying. That's, yes, that's how it felt. Yeah. They were not. Not a single word. They were not good at being like legitimately hyped or at least seeming legitimately hyped. It was just like we are reading off of a PowerPoint. And I know, I know they do this on every event. Yeah. But it felt especially like, wow, isn't that exciting? Okay, next. This felt like if you played an example for, like if you wanted to give a presenter

• 33:52Speaker 01

for the first time, like something to aim for and something to avoid. This is what you would play of like, don't do this because everyone will think you don't care and you are not invested at all and you don't believe what you're saying. Yeah. But every line was like that. Every person was like that. Every person. It was weird. It really felt like almost everything they announced.

• 34:11Andrew Manganelli?

You know, software wasn't, am I wrong in feeling like I've seen every single thing already? And just like, nothing felt even remote and like maybe coupled with that is why it felt so stale.

• 34:22Speaker 01

The hardware was new, much of the software is stuff we've seen before. And again, a lot of companies do this, they'll re-announce the same stuff as last year and they'll go, it's better than ever and it's still helpful and people are loving this and they'll just announce it again, basically.

• 34:36David Imel?

  Or add a singular feature.

• 34:38Speaker 01

And yeah, and say it's reinvented or something. But um, yeah, I just have this, this memory of like, they brought this half marathon world record holder on stage because they were talking about the new, the running coach in the watch. And he walks on stage and the whole conversation is so scripted. It's like cardboard box on stage looks and goes, yeah, great watch. And then the guy next to him goes like, by the way, do you have any tips for runners? And then he goes, yeah, run a lot. And then he goes, thanks, and walks away. Like there's no substance to it at all. Where you could see like, they thought it was a good idea to do that because, oh, we could try to convince people that this guy uses the Galaxy Watch while he trains. And then it'll be great because he's a world record holder and all this will be great. He uses all these features, but none of that made it through.

• 35:22David Imel?

We didn't even get to laugh at Sydney Sweeney cringing at her own AI emoji.

• 35:27Speaker 01

They did other cringe worthy things, I don't know. It is what it is.

• 35:31David Imel?

But at least that was fun.

• 35:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 35:34Speaker 02

The AI, look, there have been hundreds of thousands, if not millions of hours of stock footage of New York that has been shot over the last five years, you know? Why was, were they AI generating that city?

• 35:46David Imel?

  Because they can.

• 35:47Speaker 02

  It looked so bad.

• 35:48Speaker 01

  It was horse material.

• 35:49Speaker 02

Like, and I, I feel like they might've wanted to be like, and by the way, that was all AI generated and.

• 35:55David Imel?

  And they never did.

• 35:56Speaker 02

Well, they won't now because it looked so bad.

• 35:59David Imel?

Yeah, it was similar to the like unlabeled beer can that just says beer.

• 36:03Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 36:03David Imel?

It was like the most basic stock version of New York City possible.

• 36:07Speaker 04

And like, we always, like, we sit around the big TV here and watch these events like all together as an office. And with Apple, I feel like when we're watching an Apple event, they buy into it so hard that that's what we make fun of when we're cracking jokes around here, like watching it.

• 36:21Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 36:22Speaker 04

They, no one here believes any of it. So we were just sitting there like, kind of bored, like, wait, what is happening right now?

• 36:28David Imel?

Yeah, this is 180 degrees different.

• 36:30Speaker 01

You can make fun of Apple because they're, they're almost like, everything is magic. This is all fantastic. And you're like, alright, come on, like- The smoothness of the liquid glass underneath is incredible. Overly leaning in, which I get it, that translates to some people, but this one felt like, how does this translate to anyone?

• 36:48David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 36:48Speaker 01

No one is gonna watch this and get excited or, or believe anything that they're seeing. I feel like I'm riding on them. I'll, we'll just, I'm gonna, I'm gonna cut together a couple of clips for, for us to put in the podcast right now to get a taste of what I'm talking about. So we'll just roll that right now.

• 37:02Speaker 07

Thank you, Alice. Isn't her story inspiring?

• 37:09Speaker 08

  How cool was that?

• 37:13Speaker 08

  That was awesome. Thanks, guy.

• 37:22Speaker 09

  Wow. Incredible, right?

• 37:28Speaker 09

Ah, amazing. That energy is contagious.

• 37:32Speaker 01

Okay, so now you've seen it. There's that.

• 37:36Speaker 04

There is one point where all of us sitting down had like an ooh ah moment, and I think it was Watch Eight classic. The first time they showed that. That was the only time we were like, oh damn, wait, that looks good. And everyone like, quieted down.

• 37:49Speaker 01

And it had nothing to do with the software.

• 37:50Speaker 04

It had no, nope. Beautiful looking watch.

• 37:52Speaker 01

Yeah. The phones, though, a bunch of interesting updates, like actually new hardware. So let's start with the Fold 7. Fold 7 is, they did the thing where it, it is actually different and new and better to use both closed and open. So the outside display is wider, the bezels are thinner. And the entire phone is dramatically thinner. So using it closed feels closer than ever to a regular phone. That's like the whole point. Open each side half is like 4.2 millimeters or something crazy and you close it up and it's like a little over eight millimeters. Close to the dimensions of an S25 Ultra. It's actually lighter than an S25 Ultra. So you're holding the thing and looking at it and with one hand it's reachable.

• 38:36Speaker 01

It feels like a regular phone. You open it and it's a bigger than ever eight inch screen. It's pretty square still, but that's your multitasking display. That's your, you know, full screen games and videos with big black bezels. But that is the Galaxy Z Flip experience. It's better open than it was before. It's better closed than it was before.

• 38:53David Imel?

  Z Fold.

• 38:54Speaker 01

Z Fold, sorry. They also gave it the 200 megapixel sensor from the S25 Ultra. So slightly different optics, but big camera for the primary camera. They didn't quite get flagship cameras in all of the rest. There's still an ultra wide and a 3X telephoto. But it is a big ultra primary camera now, which is good. And I've also never seen a phone rock like that on a table in my life. In my whole life. I'm 31 years old. I've reviewed a lot of phones. I've never seen a phone rock like that on a table. So that was impressive. And then three other smaller potential downsides. One, I know David, you saw somebody using an S Pen with a.

• 39:31David Imel?

I realized that I didn't tell this story in the podcast. I told it before the podcast and I referenced it on the podcast as if I had told it.

• 39:37Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 39:38David Imel?

So let me tell the story and then we'll be sad for her.

• 39:40Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 39:41David Imel?

Okay, so, so I'm in the airport, right? Be me, airport. You're sitting waiting for your flight for three hours because you get there way too early.

• 39:48Andrew Manganelli?

I'm saying Marquez cannot. Already lost him.

• 39:53David Imel?

I see this old woman being pushed in a wheelchair as they do in the airport, right? She's like going along with, oh, that's an old woman. That's what I thought. And then I, I noticed as she's coming by me, I was like, what's she holding? She's up, holding a fully opened Galaxy Fold 6.

• 40:10Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 40:11David Imel?

And not only is she holding the fully open Galaxy Fold 6 while being pushed in the car. She's using the S Pen with it.

• 40:16Speaker 01

  Whoa.

• 40:17David Imel?

And I was like, huh. Okay.

• 40:20Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 40:21David Imel?

I went from like, wait, are our foldable phones only for young people to wait, are foldable phones better for old?

• 40:27Speaker 04

Yeah, when you first told the story, I was like, that makes so much sense.

• 40:31David Imel?

Yeah, it was like big screen, big words, big icons.

• 40:34Speaker 01

  Biggest font you've ever seen.

• 40:35David Imel?

Yeah, like you've seen the people on the plane with like the giant font.

• 40:38Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 40:39David Imel?

With an open fold, you can have it be like.

• 40:41Speaker 01

  Even bigger font.

• 40:43David Imel?

  Even bigger.

• 40:43Speaker 01

Yeah, so the bad news is the Fold 7, no S Pen support.

• 40:47David Imel?

  Oh, my goodness.

• 40:47Speaker 01

They got rid of it. They justified it.

• 40:49Speaker 04

So it's not an Ultra. That was my question.

• 40:51Speaker 01

  Oh, really?

• 40:52Speaker 04

I had one question. Can you use the S Pen on this thing?

• 40:54Speaker 01

Yeah, so they use the word Ultra in the marketing a lot, probably too much.

• 40:59Speaker 04

That's what made me think it had S Pens.

• 41:01Speaker 01

Yeah, the only Ultra thing about it is they brought the Ultra's 200 megapixel camera, primary camera, to this Fold. But that's really the only thing they brought from the Ultra. Everything else is very much in line.

• 41:12David Imel?

I feel like we've fully eclipsed the dream of the Fold having the pen in it, right? Because like they kept getting so close. They like added the case that had the, first they just sold the pen separately and it was like, we're gonna lose that. And then they made the like four Galaxy phones, four fold one, which was thinner and it had the like.

• 41:30Speaker 01

  Specialist.

• 41:31David Imel?

The special pen that was like lighter and did softer. And then they sold the case with it that had the pen in it. And I was like, okay, we're one step closer to it just being in the phone like the Note.

• 41:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 41:42David Imel?

And then they just got rid of it.

• 41:43Speaker 01

So they made all of that progression and then looked at the numbers and nobody's using the S Pen with it. Which is like maybe a chicken and egg thing because it's so hard to remember to bring the S Pen with you that maybe people just didn't want to do it. And if they just put a spot in the phone for it, people would use it more.

• 41:57Speaker 04

Or even just have it magnetized to the side like this one.

• 41:59Speaker 01

Even that though, it falls off.

• 42:01Speaker 04

  Oh, man.

• 42:02Speaker 01

Don't you put that in the bag though?

• 42:03Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 42:04Speaker 01

Doesn't it fall off every time?

• 42:05Speaker 04

What is a pocket but a bag on my pants?

• 42:08Speaker 01

That's fair. The S Pen would end up in your pocket every time.

• 42:11David Imel?

I, would the old woman have baggy pants, like trap pants?

• 42:15Speaker 01

Well, or a purse or a bag or a travel bag, whatever. But nevertheless, they got rid of the digitizer layer. They were able to make the ultra thin glass layer on top thicker.

• 42:23David Imel?

Like an extra digitizer that they had?

• 42:25Speaker 01

They had an extra digitizer layer for the S Pen support. They got rid of it. It doesn't support S Pen anymore.

• 42:30David Imel?

  Insane.

• 42:30Speaker 01

So that's one. Two is, uh, so the battery is the same size, which is impressive in a thinner phone. But 4,400 milliamp hours. If you've seen what silicon carbon batteries are doing in other ultra-thin foldable phones and other places.

• 42:48David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 42:49Speaker 01

This is less impressive, like the Honor Magic 5 is the one I showed in my impressions video, which is actually thinner than Samsung's phone.

• 42:55David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 42:56Speaker 01

And just as light and has like a 5,800 million power battery.

• 42:59David Imel?

I have something I want to note.

• 43:00Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 43:01David Imel?

So when I was at Google I/O, a Google engineer came up to me and they said, "Hey David, I know you guys keep talking about silicon carbon batteries on the podcast. Uh, I just want to tell you that like as an engineer, these silicon carbon batteries last substantially shorter periods of time than like the traditional cells."

• 43:18Speaker 01

  You mean like lifespan?

• 43:19David Imel?

Lifespan. Lifespan wise. And he said after like a few years, they lose like a ton of capacity. And so whether or not that's true, he's, he's the engineer, not me.

• 43:30Speaker 01

  Interesting.

• 43:30David Imel?

But I think that probably the reason that these bigger companies, or at least companies that are bigger in, in Western markets, are sticking still with these older things is because they're the ones doing like seven years of software upgrades. Whereas it seems like-

• 43:45Speaker 01

That is a really interesting point.

• 43:46David Imel?

A lot of the Chinese phones, it's like they release 20 of them a year and they're just like boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.

• 43:51Speaker 01

And it's also, so that's an interesting point. I kind of wonder how much shorter they last when you see it here kind of like that?

• 43:57David Imel?

By two to three years, they're like degenerated a lot more than the traditional ones are.

• 44:01Speaker 01

Cause you know, the ones that are lagging on silicon carbon batteries, at least now that we're seeing all these updates, are like the big major flagships, Samsung Galaxy S, Pixel.

• 44:11David Imel?

That are sold in Western markets.

• 44:13Speaker 01

Yeah. And these are phones that people tend to have for many years.

• 44:17David Imel?

  Right.

• 44:17Speaker 01

Where almost every other phone, like the enthusiast phones, the ones that are bought by people who upgrade more often, can do that. It's like the, we just saw the, the, the Nothing Phone 3, but also like the Oppo, you know, Find, whatever, and the OnePlus 13 and like all these phones with silicon carbon batteries, which are great and will be awesome for years, but maybe not the seven, eight, nine years of flagship.

• 44:40David Imel?

People that are going to be upgrading their phone more often because they're more enthusiast. I don't know. I mean, if you're a battery engineer, please tweet at us or something.

• 44:47Speaker 01

I mean, I could argue that the fold is one of those phones that people are not going to use for seven, eight, nine years. I think that's an enthusiast phone. It's a $2,000 folding.

• 44:54David Imel?

  That's fair. That's fair. Yeah.

• 44:55Speaker 01

But um, yeah, we'll see. I think that's, that's my concern is 4,400 million power is when it has a massive eight inch screen on the inside. It's like not going to be the best battery life, but. TBD. Yeah. TBD. Um, I think I had one more negative. Oh, the flip has an Exynos chip. So if we want to talk about the flip. But both. What? Both. What? Yep, they switched from a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 to an Exynos 2500. Gen 3. But they tell you why? They didn't tell me why. In fact, it was kind of hard to get the information out of them in the first place. They said it's got an incredible 3 nanometer chip. And then I go, yeah, but which one, though? And then they go, it's an Exynos 2500.

• 45:37Speaker 01

So, yeah, that is, that is potentially a downside of the new flip. But the new flip is also bigger. It has a bigger battery, 4300 milliamp hours versus 4000. It has a bigger external 4.1 inch display. The fun fact, I just retweeted, Christian Selig just tweeted, "It's a bigger screen than the original iPhone." Whoa. The outside secondary screen on the flip is bigger than the original iPhone screen. That's crazy. So, yeah, it's fully like edge to edge. Yeah, it's a square, but it's, it's like around the cameras now, which are just punch through cutouts. Uh, it's a 6.9 inch screen inside instead of 6.7. So bigger flip, thinner fold. Thoughts, questions? Do they have decks? Yes, both have decks. Very exciting. Let's go.

• 46:18David Imel?

You know what's funny too? They had a part in the keynote where they were doing the skating spot with the skater person. And someone was filming with the flip as if it was a handicap, which is a feature that the Moto Razr brought a couple of years ago and it, they have it, it's very fun.

• 46:38Speaker 01

  They lean into their

• 46:38David Imel?

They lean into it a lot. Like it has a different UI and you can like zoom in and out like you would do in a normal camcorder and the UI is different. It's cool. Um, I'm wondering if they're going to have anything like that, but it is funny that Samsung is like following Moto on this. Also Moto had the full screen like way before Samsung did.

• 46:55Speaker 01

  Yes, they did.

• 46:55David Imel?

  So.

• 46:56Speaker 01

But you know, this is just Samsung going, eh, like, they looked around at others that were innovating in the space because technically they were first, but they went around and looked at the other successful features and they just adopted those into theirs. This is not the first thin fold either, but they just adopted that. They've re-engineered the hinge and the displays and all that to make less of a crease and now they're the big one. So they're the one that people will see.

• 47:16David Imel?

Yeah, it is nice to have that full screen and I wonder if they're gonna do any weird games like Moto did. They also had like some stuff where you'd have to like, they used the cameras as little buckets and you had to like land them.

• 47:26Andrew Manganelli?

It was like a maze and you like, I think, used the gyroscope, right?

• 47:29David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 47:29Andrew Manganelli?

I did like that they did, just because it reminded me of, uh, S10E days where they did, uh, like wallpapers on the front screen that used the cameras. As part of like the, like, cats' eyes or something like that.

• 47:41Speaker 01

  I've always been into that.

• 47:42David Imel?

  Very nice.

• 47:43Speaker 01

Last major point, uh, Fold 7 is a hundred dollars more expensive. It's $19.99 starting. Flip 7 is the same price, $10.99 starting. And then the FE is how you get in cheaper. That's $8.99 for an Exos 2400.

• 47:58Andrew Manganelli?

Damn, that's still expensive though, because like when Razer did their cheaper Fold, full flipping version a few years ago, that was like six or 700 bucks. That was like a great deal for if you want to be the person who's like, well, I'm not gonna spend too much on a phone, but it folds? What is this?

• 48:14Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 48:15Andrew Manganelli?

  This is still pretty expensive.

• 48:16David Imel?

Do any of these have Chi 2?

• 48:19Speaker 01

  Nope.

• 48:21Andrew Manganelli?

You knew that answer already. I didn't see it in the doc. I had to make sure.

• 48:24David Imel?

I was waiting for so long, dude.

• 48:26Speaker 01

Yeah, the Samsung experiences, don't expect silicon carbon, don't expect Chi 2, don't expect ultra-fast charging, don't expect like the crazy features, just, you know, the stuff that's proven. Once one or two years of magic phones do it, alright, we can do that too.

• 48:41Andrew Manganelli?

I can't wait to see the Fold. It does look significantly thinner.

• 48:45Speaker 01

  It feels so different.

• 48:46Andrew Manganelli?

Pretty awesome. The Rock, I also really want to see in person because it's so funny.

• 48:51Speaker 01

  Bring him on the podcast.

• 48:51Andrew Manganelli?

  Not the person, the

• 48:53Speaker 01

  Wait, what?

• 48:53Andrew Manganelli?

  The rocking on the table.

• 48:55Speaker 01

  Oh, oh, oh.

• 48:56Andrew Manganelli?

The video of you rocking it on the table is so funny.

• 48:58Speaker 01

  Yeah, it's

• 48:59David Imel?

  The Rock lobster?

• 49:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 49:03David Imel?

We should also mention that the FE, the screen is last year's screen, so. Did we say that already?

• 49:09Speaker 01

Yeah, the FE is fully just a flip 6.

• 49:12David Imel?

Yeah, it's just a flip 6 with Exynos.

• 49:14Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 49:14David Imel?

Just a way to sell stuff again.

• 49:16Andrew Manganelli?

I'm kind of thinking if that's the one to get this year. Because I feel like, yeah, like the flip 7 and the fold 7 didn't really impress me that much. And this one at that price, or maybe even last year's phone, if you get it at a discounted price. I feel, well, assuming you want a flip, you know?

• 49:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 49:33Andrew Manganelli?

  Not a fold.

• 49:34Speaker 01

I, I think this is a big jump for the fold, just as far as usability, with all the thinerness and lighterness. The flip, I could see that argument being fine. Like, I want to see tests for these Exynos chips, because there's, there's rumors of like, oh, Samsung is going to go fully back to Exynos for everything. TBD, I want to see benchmarks, I want to test this thing, but we don't have it yet, so I can't really say this is the one to get this year. I just want to see like, what they're actually capable of.

• 50:00David Imel?

  Interesting.

• 50:01Speaker 01

But yeah, that's the new folds and flips.

• 50:03David Imel?

And then we've got the new watches.

• 50:05Speaker 01

New watches, new watch 8 and watch 8 Ultra. They all kind of now have this circle on a squircle design, and watch 8 Classic, thank you. 349 for watch 8, 499 for watch 8 Classic, 649 for watch 8 Ultra.

• 50:21David Imel?

Is the Ultra different from last year at all?

• 50:24Andrew Manganelli?

  Blue. It's blue.

• 50:26Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 50:27Andrew Manganelli?

No, no, I think that's pretty much.

• 50:27Speaker 01

  Stunning new blue color.

• 50:29David Imel?

And that's what Apple did, so.

• 50:30Andrew Manganelli?

It is a cool blue color.

• 50:31Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 50:32Andrew Manganelli?

That matches with very few things you probably have, but other than that.

• 50:36David Imel?

I can't even find the watch 8 Ultra.

• 50:38Andrew Manganelli?

Watch 8 Classic looks so good. Like, I think the, the circle on the squircle design on the regular 8 does not look very good. In some of their graphics, it looked fine, but when you took footage of it, I thought it looked terrible. It just looks like it's missing a bunch. And then, but when you add the bezel, the rotating bezel on that, it looks really good.

• 50:59David Imel?

I kind of think they both look good.

• 51:00Andrew Manganelli?

I think the, the watch 8 Classic is the best looking one out of all of them.

• 51:03David Imel?

  I like circle and squircle.

• 51:06Speaker 01

Yeah, they call it a cushion now, which I get it. It's like, it kind of looks, I feel like it makes sense. I don't know why, but it looks like a cushion.

• 51:13Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 51:13Speaker 01

Like the circle on a bigger, a bigger like squircle shape. I don't know. They call it cushion, but it's a good looking watch.

• 51:20Speaker 02

  It's a throw pillow.

• 51:21Speaker 01

Yeah. I'm also gonna play, let's see if we can keep this in the pod, but I'm gonna play the clip of the runner now, who's using a watch eight allegedly.

• 51:29Speaker 09

Jacob, it is such an honor. I'm a huge fan. I see that you're wearing the new Galaxy Watch 8. How's it feel?

• 51:38Speaker 10

It's light, comfortable, and easy to wear. I'm excited for the next dress.

• 51:45Andrew Manganelli?

It's so unfortunate, he just clearly, there's a language barrier here, so I don't know why they decided to put him on stage.

• 51:50Speaker 01

Even without the language barrier, like.

• 51:52Speaker 02

Don't they have live translation to deal with this?

• 51:55Speaker 01

The host, though, is just equally.

• 51:57Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 51:58Speaker 09

What advice would you give to aspiring long distance runners?

• 52:03Speaker 10

  Discipline and consistent training.

• 52:08Andrew Manganelli?

But it's not even, yeah, it's, he's just like completely stone faced. He's standing like a character select screen. I.

• 52:15Speaker 01

I even think like this script, no matter who delivers it, is terrible.

• 52:20Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 52:20Speaker 01

You could have the most enthusiastic person just be like, oh yeah, and you're a runner too. Like, what do you think? Like, while I have you here, how should I like train? Like, what do you think is good advice for me as a runner?

• 52:29Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 52:30Speaker 01

Discipline and consistent training. That's the onstage answer? Alright, I guess you could have said anything.

• 52:35Andrew Manganelli?

But also just the like, it is such an honor. I am such a big fan.

• 52:38Speaker 01

Yeah, that was every transition. It was tough. Anyway.

• 52:42Andrew Manganelli?

  Anyway.

• 52:43Speaker 01

So that's, yeah, that was Samsung Unpacked. There's plenty more to test. We're gonna get these devices in hand. We're gonna test them out. Let us know if you want to see reviews of each of these individual things. I know a lot of people are hungry for a watch eight review.

• 52:55Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 52:55Speaker 01

So I'm hearing those, but uh, yeah, let us know in the comments.

• 52:58Andrew Manganelli?

They did add the running coach that Apple added as well.

• 53:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 53:01Andrew Manganelli?

Um, I'm wondering if it's just as cursed.

• 53:04Speaker 01

I think Apple's is way more like vocal and just encouraging.

• 53:08Speaker 02

So great. You're doing good. One mile in.

• 53:13Speaker 01

You're at a good pace. Actually, this one will tell you like, you're going too fast, you're going too slow. It was very similar in concept, to be honest. So, yeah, that's all happening.

• 53:21Andrew Manganelli?

  And vascular.

• 53:22Speaker 02

I, if my run playlist was ever interrupted by an AI voice saying that, I would fly to Cupertino personally to complain.

• 53:30Speaker 01

Yeah, I think this is not gonna be my favorite feature. Well, we got more to talk about, but before we get there, ad break and trivia.

• 53:42Speaker 04

Trivia. So, question two. Hit it, Ellis. Were you paying attention?

• 53:50David Imel?

  Oh, no.

• 53:54Speaker 04

When they debuted the new Fold 7.

• 53:58Speaker 02

That's the thing everyone's putting on their purses, right?

• 54:03Speaker 04

The debut. What did they brand? The Hinge. What is it called?

• 54:09Speaker 01

Oh, oh, oh, oh, I know. It was a cool animation.

• 54:12Speaker 04

  It was a cool animation.

• 54:13Speaker 02

  I gotta hit it again.

• 54:15Speaker 04

  Were you paying attention?

• 54:17David Imel?

  No.

• 54:19Speaker 02

Do you guys know who says that? Were you paying attention? That's, that's good trivia. Good, good waveform trivia.

• 54:23Speaker 04

  It's you, isn't it?

• 54:24Speaker 02

  Yeah, it's me.

• 54:26David Imel?

Wow. Do you guys know who sits in this chair every week? It's me.

• 54:31Speaker 02

  Not last week.

• 54:32David Imel?

  That's true. It was you.

• 54:34Speaker 04

  It was you again!

• 54:34Speaker 02

  It was me!

• 54:37David Imel?

Okay, we have to take a break. We'll be right back.

• 54:53Speaker 01

Support for the show comes from Jira by Atlassian. So AI is only as useful as the context it has to work from, but when that context is scattered across tools like threads and DMs, that means your team and your AI agents end up flying kind of blind. That's the problem Jira solves. What's the goal tied to your project? What got decided last week in Slack? Atlassian's teamwork graph pulls all of these pieces together from Jira, Confluence, Slack, GitHub, and more, so nothing falls through the cracks. With Jira, you can actually share that context with the AI agents you already use, like Claude, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot, assign them work directly, or connect your agents through MCP. Spend less time digging through endless links and DMs, less time chasing down what got decided and by who,

• 56:37Andrew Manganelli?

  All right, welcome back.

• 56:37David Imel?

  Thanks.

• 56:38Andrew Manganelli?

You're welcome. But maybe not you're welcome because we're going to teach you about sports.

• 56:41David Imel?

Not again. Every, every week we do this.

• 56:45Andrew Manganelli?

  This time.

• 56:45David Imel?

  This is tech sports.

• 56:46Andrew Manganelli?

  This is Formula One.

• 56:47David Imel?

  It's not ball sports.

• 56:49Andrew Manganelli?

  It's not.

• 56:49David Imel?

  Oh, it's not?

• 56:50Andrew Manganelli?

  It's not basketball.

• 56:51David Imel?

  Ball sports?

• 56:51Andrew Manganelli?

  No.

• 56:52David Imel?

  No.

• 56:52Andrew Manganelli?

  No.

• 56:53David Imel?

  Cool.

• 56:53Andrew Manganelli?

  Not yet. Um, okay.

• 56:55David Imel?

  It'll be rocket league. Okay.

• 56:59Andrew Manganelli?

Something pretty big happened in Formula One.

• 57:01David Imel?

  All right.

• 57:01Andrew Manganelli?

  This morning, I think.

• 57:03David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 57:03Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. Um, and I'm going to try and explain it. Listen, I, everyone out there, those Formula One fans, I am the stupid American who watched Draft to Survive and now likes Formula One, so take what I say with a grain of salt. Um, but I'm going to explain to you what happened and you are going to try, both of you, since you watch a little bit of Formula One.

• 57:21David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 57:22Andrew Manganelli?

You don't know what it is at all.

• 57:24David Imel?

No. Well, I know it's a, it's the car racing thing. Mark has one time when he did this Formula One explained video. I did watch that.

• 57:32Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay.

• 57:32David Imel?

I learned, I learned that it's like more of an engineering competition.

• 57:36Andrew Manganelli?

  It is.

• 57:37David Imel?

  It's a racing.

• 57:37Andrew Manganelli?

  It very much.

• 57:38David Imel?

  Which I find interesting.

• 57:39Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. It's, it's great. Silverstone was one of the most fun races I've ever watched, by the way, this weekend. Adam watched it. It was very good.

• 57:46David Imel?

Those are like the guys with the.

• 57:48Andrew Manganelli?

No, they're not. It's a course. Um, okay. So what happened?

• 57:53David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 57:53Andrew Manganelli?

You, you both know Red Bull, correct? Red Bull, the racing team.

• 57:57David Imel?

  Do I?

• 57:59Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, do I? Well, in Red Bull's ever, uh, expanding way of marketing an energy drink, they bought an entire racing team. And that racing team in the last couple of years has been like absolutely dominant. Max Verstappen beats people to a point where I think most betting sites, you were betting on who was going to win, not including Max Verstappen. Oh, wow. Until this year. Until this year, where he has not been doing very good. McLaren is doing incredible, but Christian Horner, the principal of Red Bull. Am I getting that right? Principal? Principal manager, okay. COO. It's very confusing because like Zach Brown is the CEO of McLaren Racing, but always kind of looks like the principal and driver to survive anyways.

• 58:45Andrew Manganelli?

Christian Horner. Principal confirmed. Principal confirmed, thank you. Was let go from Red Bull today. Now, he is the person who basically manages the drivers, manages kind of the strategy. He manages the entire team and he has been with this team since 2004, I believe. 2004, 2005, pretty much when Red Bull started. He, he's been the managing the Red Bull racing team since Red Bull started. And they were not a team that was as dominant as they are now back then. In fact, I think the story is that Red Bull bought a previous racing team for like $1 or something. They like bought the spot for a dollar, but then with the promise of investing like $300 million into it. That's a heavy asterisk.

• 59:28Andrew Manganelli?

It is. You can have this for a dollar. Asterisk. Christian Horner has been like the, the face of managing Red Bull. I mean, I think Red Bull's got 300 million in their wallet. All from me. And because they've been so dominant, Max and Christian have kind of been like untouchables. It feels like, um, last year, one of the main race car designers of Red Bull, Adrian Newey, left the team after some, there was some controversy that Christian did that I don't feel like talking about, um, but like. Did people know? About the controversy? Yeah, did they knew he left the team?

• 1:00:08Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:00:08Andrew Manganelli?

Yes. He left the team. Max and Newey were pretty close. So Max stayed with the team. This year, he has not been racing well. Very poorly, in fact.

• 1:00:19Speaker 01

  Really? Like, bad? Not podiuming?

• 1:00:21Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, like not podiuming, like a lot. I think he had his first DNF in like, two years or something also. Did not finish the race.

• 1:00:29Speaker 01

  Whoa.

• 1:00:31Andrew Manganelli?

I mean, like, this is a guy who was like, straight up going into races where he had like, he won qualifying, he had the fastest lap of the race and won the race. Most of the races in the season, and now he's like consistently not podium. Anyways. Christian Horner left this morning, which is like a big shock to the whole world. Max is still there. There's a bunch of rumors of Max potentially leaving to Mercedes and this kind of makes it feel a little more true, or a last ditch effort to save it, but I wanted you guys to attempt to explain this in tech terms of

• 1:01:03Andrew Manganelli?

kind of the leader of Red Bull. Yeah, I think. Since the, the team started and was terrible and no one cared about them, clawed them up to the top of being a basically a movable object.

• 1:01:14Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:01:15Andrew Manganelli?

To now, within half a season of not being an immovable object, is gone.

• 1:01:20Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:01:20Andrew Manganelli?

  After 20 years.

• 1:01:21Speaker 01

  Carl Pei leaving OnePlus.

• 1:01:26Speaker 02

  But OnePlus doesn't, isn't trash.

• 1:01:29Speaker 01

Well, OnePlus had this super rise.

• 1:01:32Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:01:32Speaker 01

Where he was, he was on it for a long time, maybe not 20 years, but he was on it for a long time. And they had this meteoric rise, so they were literally a fan favorite.

• 1:01:40Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:01:41Speaker 01

Uh, the OnePlus 1, all the way through to like the OnePlus 7, like god tier phones for enthusiasts. People love these things. They were like, oh my god, if they could just have wireless charging in this one little thing, this would be like the greatest phone ever. And, and then they just stopped podiuming, hard. Like, they stopped making phones that people really loved. And they started making ones that were a little overpriced and started to go off the, off the deep end, and then Carl Pei left and started another thing. A lot of people followed him. He was kind of the max prob, or maybe he's the Christian Horner, I don't know. But he was one of the driving forces between them, or for why they got so good.

• 1:02:15Andrew Manganelli?

Driving forces, nice. I'll throw one more thing out there. Cause I think a lot of people do like Carl Pei. No one is upset that Christian Horner is off of Red Bull. He's like kind of the villain at this point. I mean, he had a controversy last year, but he's also just kind of been

• 1:02:31Speaker 01

  What makes him the villain?

• 1:02:33Andrew Manganelli?

  He's been an asshole.

• 1:02:34Speaker 01

So he's he's both responsible for their rise for 20 years and also people hate him.

• 1:02:39Andrew Manganelli?

He's partially responsible. I mean, he was like the leader of it. So it's you have to give him some responsibility. Adrian Newey probably would be.

• 1:02:46Speaker 01

  In tech, who's that?

• 1:02:48David Imel?

  He'd knew it. He'd knew he'd leave.

• 1:02:49Speaker 02

  I think.

• 1:02:50Andrew Manganelli?

I started coming up with an idea and it felt Steve Jobsy because like.

• 1:02:55David Imel?

Well, is he gonna come back?

• 1:02:57Speaker 02

But no one was mad when I mean, no, yeah, no one was mad that. Sorry. No one was happy Steve Jobs. Are you talking about like 1980?

• 1:03:05Andrew Manganelli?

  No one loves Steve Jobs.

• 1:03:07Speaker 02

You're not talking about like, are you talking about Steve Jobs passing or Steve Jobs leaving Apple?

• 1:03:10Speaker 01

  No.

• 1:03:11Andrew Manganelli?

No, leaving Apple the first time.

• 1:03:12Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 1:03:14Andrew Manganelli?

When he left Apple the first time, like they were. They were starting. I guess he I guess Apple didn't really start to claw into the like. We are number one. Screw everyone else till his the end of his second tenure.

• 1:03:27Speaker 02

  No, they.

• 1:03:27Speaker 01

They had that for a long time.

• 1:03:29Speaker 02

No, other than the Macintosh, the the 84 Macintosh, Apple actually didn't really have a single hit product.

• 1:03:36Speaker 01

No, yeah. But they still their their whole ethos was always like, we design things differently than everybody else.

• 1:03:42Speaker 02

Totally. No, no, totally. Just that none of them actually sold well, other than the Macintosh. And if I'm wrong about that, please. The Apple II sold well. Um, and the 2E, but other than that.

• 1:03:51Speaker 01

It's an interesting story. I don't know. Yeah, it's it's actually one of those that probably doesn't have a direct equivalent because in this case, Apple and Red Bull have to be equivalent. And I don't know if Red Bull and Apple are equivalent.

• 1:04:02David Imel?

We're basically just trying to describe a guy that no one liked leaving a team.

• 1:04:06Andrew Manganelli?

But a guy who like is fairly responsible for this team being the like.

• 1:04:11Speaker 01

  Number one.

• 1:04:12Andrew Manganelli?

Like not just number one, but like number one.

• 1:04:15Speaker 01

  Dominating.

• 1:04:15Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:04:16Speaker 01

  Interesting.

• 1:04:17Speaker 02

  Yeah, it was like.

• 1:04:17Speaker 01

It's weird because I have like a different analogy, but it's also sports.

• 1:04:20Andrew Manganelli?

No, me too. All I have are sports analogies.

• 1:04:23Speaker 01

Other sports, other coaches leaving teams who are like dominant.

• 1:04:27Andrew Manganelli?

  Yes, yes.

• 1:04:28Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:04:28David Imel?

It's like when Mr. Krabs like left.

• 1:04:32Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:04:33David Imel?

Left the Krabby, left the Krusty Krab.

• 1:04:35Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:04:36David Imel?

  Because he built it up.

• 1:04:37Speaker 01

  Uh huh.

• 1:04:37David Imel?

You know, and then SpongeBob took over.

• 1:04:39Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:04:40David Imel?

  And everyone was like, okay.

• 1:04:41Speaker 01

  Uh huh.

• 1:04:42Andrew Manganelli?

  Wait, did that happen?

• 1:04:42Speaker 01

  We, yeah.

• 1:04:43Andrew Manganelli?

  What?

• 1:04:44Speaker 01

I don't think this happened, but this is I still like the analogy, though.

• 1:04:47Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:48David Imel?

Let's, okay, I'm gonna make a fake SpongeBob episode.

• 1:04:50Speaker 01

  Krusty Krab's is number one.

• 1:04:52David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:52Speaker 01

Red Bull Racing team, Krusty Krab.

• 1:04:54David Imel?

  He was number one, right?

• 1:04:56Speaker 01

The reason they're number one is both SpongeBob, who is actually, uh, probably Max Verstappen, but also behind the scenes, everyone hates Mr. Krabs, but you need a Christian Horner, a Mr. Krabs, to make this thing go.

• 1:05:08Andrew Manganelli?

I feel like Christian Horner and Mr. Krabs give off pretty similar vibes.

• 1:05:12Speaker 01

So, they got to number one.

• 1:05:14David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:14Speaker 01

Christian Horner, AKA Mr. Krabs, leaves.

• 1:05:17David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:18Speaker 01

Because they're suddenly, like Krabby Patty's not doing well, like they're not getting customers. Who's Plankton in this case? Probably like Lewis, Lewis Hamilton is Plankton? And he's like, yo, come join this side. Cause he's on the Mercedes team, right? Or he's Ferrari now?

• 1:05:31Andrew Manganelli?

So, Plankton would be like Toto.

• 1:05:33Speaker 01

Okay, Toto. And he's saying, he's saying, come over to this side. Hey SpongeBob, come over to our, come over to the chum bucket. Which is.

• 1:05:41David Imel?

Which did Mercedes? That was an episode.

• 1:05:43Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:05:44David Imel?

  Where SpongeBob had to go.

• 1:05:44Andrew Manganelli?

Is Carl Pay Larry the lobster in this analogy?

• 1:05:47Speaker 01

Yeah, I kind of, I kind of. Wait, lab- lobster? Lobster?

• 1:05:51Speaker 02

  Oh!

• 1:05:53Andrew Manganelli?

I'm so glad you guys saved this, cause I was doing terrible.

• 1:05:55Speaker 02

No, no, I think I have the tech CEO equivalent, guys.

• 1:05:58Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay.

• 1:05:59Speaker 02

I think the best one we can come up with so far is, and I actually don't know how to pronounce this guy's name, so we're gonna call him Travis. And Travis started a little company called Uber.

• 1:06:10Speaker 01

  Oh, Kalanick.

• 1:06:11Speaker 02

Is that how you say it?

• 1:06:11Speaker 01

  Yeah. Yeah.

• 1:06:15Speaker 02

Fair enough. Alright, Travis Kalanick. I told myself I wouldn't say people's names that I didn't look up.

• 1:06:20Speaker 01

  I know.

• 1:06:20Speaker 02

  So.

• 1:06:20Speaker 01

You can blame yourself if you're wrong.

• 1:06:22Speaker 02

  I will.

• 1:06:22Speaker 01

  If I'm wrong.

• 1:06:23Speaker 02

Well, I am in your seat. Travis Kalanick started Uber. Everyone was like, this is dumb. It is a little dumb. And then it ended up becoming worth billions and billions and billions of dollars. Everyone was like, wow, this guy is the worst boss I've ever even dreamed of. There's actually a quote somewhere of him telling Steve Jobs at some point, maybe it was Tim, it was either Tim Cook or Steve Jobs, telling him like, no, I structured this entire board so that no one could ever tell me no. Um, including my CFO, which ended up not going so well for Uber. Anyway, eventually, uh, uh, it was the same thing. Some other stuff happened. We don't need to talk about it on the podcast. And he got, he resigned, you know what I mean? But like, the board made him resign. And it was the same thing, or it was like.

• 1:07:08Speaker 02

You know, this entire operation was his vision, was like his doing. But I literally cannot wait to have him not involved anymore.

• 1:07:17Speaker 01

You know, I like that one. I like that.

• 1:07:19Speaker 02

  Did I win?

• 1:07:20Speaker 01

I also just opened up Twitter and at the top of my timeline, a picture of Sam Altman and Johnny Ive came up. And Johnny Ive is another interesting comp.

• 1:07:30Speaker 02

  That's true.

• 1:07:31Speaker 01

He was putting out bangers and people loved the designs for a while. And then suddenly it wasn't hidden and he was going ultra thin and then he left.

• 1:07:39David Imel?

And everyone's like, I'm not too sad about that because they brought back all the ports.

• 1:07:43Speaker 02

And, and the book I literally can't stop talking about, Apple in China.

• 1:07:48Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:07:49Speaker 02

Brings up this really good point that during Johnny Ive's like, you know, heavy hitting tenure, there was this culture at Apple where you couldn't really say no to the industrial design department, which he led. And there weren't that many engineers. I should rephrase that. There weren't that many people whose primary focus was engineering at industrial design.

• 1:08:08Speaker 01

  A lot of designers.

• 1:08:09Speaker 02

So there was a lot of designs that broke the laws of physics. That then the product engineers would go, guys, this like plastic doesn't.

• 1:08:18Speaker 01

You want me to put an I9 in this? Are you crazy?

• 1:08:21Speaker 02

The classic example is the handle in the original iMac was not connected to the structural frame of the computer. So it was just a piece of plastic that you could, would literally just end up ripping out of the body if you ever tried to lift it. And Johnny Ive was like, it has to be there. Like, sorry, like figure it out.

• 1:08:38Speaker 01

They fought over it for so long.

• 1:08:40Speaker 02

So, uh, yeah, Johnny Ive, another, another good example.

• 1:08:42David Imel?

Johnny Ive is a great example, next to Mr. Krabs.

• 1:08:45Speaker 01

Yeah. I like our analogies. Mr. Krabs and Johnny Ive. Well, hopefully after this, after this segment, people better understand what happened in Formula One this week.

• 1:08:53Speaker 02

  Travis Kalanick?

• 1:08:54David Imel?

That's how I've heard every other person say it.

• 1:08:57Speaker 01

For some reason, I had Travis Kelsey in my head because that's how I've read that name for so long. But obviously that's not.

• 1:09:03David Imel?

  Those are different people.

• 1:09:04Speaker 02

When Travis Kelsey misses like one catch and then. Dude, Bill Belichick, another great example.

• 1:09:12Speaker 01

  Oh, things happen.

• 1:09:13Speaker 02

  It's all sports, man.

• 1:09:15Speaker 01

  Yeah, it's another sports one.

• 1:09:17Speaker 02

But you know what you can use to describe how much you guys know about stuff?

• 1:09:23Speaker 01

  What is that?

• 1:09:23Speaker 02

  Trivia, baby.

• 1:09:24Speaker 01

  Facts.

• 1:09:26Speaker 04

Facts with the six packs sailor. Do do do.

• 1:09:29Andrew Manganelli?

Thank you all for saving that segment.

• 1:09:32Speaker 02

It is now time to talk about the original Fairphone, throwing it back.

• 1:09:38Speaker 02

How, oh, so I did look it up. It wasn't crowdfunded. There was a, some sort of like symposium, if you will, where it was announced and you could place like pre-orders either online or at the symposium. Anyway, so in this preorder first batch of Fairphone ones, how many did they make? Keep in mind, this is Price is Right rules. If you go over, your answer will be disqualified. Also, I will let you guys know.

• 1:10:06Speaker 02

The reason this number was released is because they hit this number a month ahead of schedule.

• 1:10:11Speaker 02

  Go Fairphone.

• 1:10:12Speaker 01

Oh, so it's gonna be big?

• 1:10:15Speaker 02

I don't know, David. How many first, they, so this is not the total number of Fairphone ones made. This was the number in the first production run of them.

• 1:10:28Speaker 01

I am gonna lose this one because I'm not doing Price is Right still very well.

• 1:10:31Speaker 02

  All right.

• 1:10:31Speaker 01

  I wrote.

• 1:10:33Andrew Manganelli?

I'm trying not to read your other answer.

• 1:10:35Speaker 01

  5,000.

• 1:10:36Speaker 02

  All right.

• 1:10:37Andrew Manganelli?

  I wrote 500.

• 1:10:39Speaker 02

  All right.

• 1:10:39Speaker 01

  I wrote 999.

• 1:10:40Speaker 02

All right. None of you went over, which means Marquez.

• 1:10:46Speaker 02

Gets the point. The correct number was 25,000.

• 1:10:49Speaker 01

  Wow, wow, that's a lot.

• 1:10:50Speaker 02

Which is really impressive. And I was able to fact check that in independent journals.

• 1:10:54Speaker 01

That's actually way more impressive than I thought.

• 1:10:57Speaker 02

That is very impressive. Good job, Fairphone. We love what you're doing. Except Marquez with your button.

• 1:11:02Speaker 01

  I don't hate the button.

• 1:11:03Speaker 04

  It's a switch.

• 1:11:04Speaker 01

  You're overreacting.

  It's a switch.

• 1:11:07Speaker 04

It's a switch too. All right. Quick update on the score. After that point, Marquez with 28, Andrew with 17, and David with 31. All right. Will you guys pay attention?

What is the name of the hinge in the new Z Fold 7?

• 1:11:29Speaker 04

What did they brand it as?

• 1:11:30Speaker 01

I wrote my answer down already. And I remember writing this down when they said the name of it, but it was in the briefing, not in the keynote.

• 1:11:37Speaker 04

Oh, it came with a nice, like, cool graphic in the keynote, too. It was really nice.

• 1:11:40Speaker 01

  I believe that.

• 1:11:40Andrew Manganelli?

How many points do I get if I get one letter of it correct?

• 1:11:44Speaker 04

  Zero.

• 1:11:44Andrew Manganelli?

Because I remember a letter from it.

• 1:11:46Speaker 04

  That's not helpful.

• 1:11:47Andrew Manganelli?

  Well, yeah.

• 1:11:49Speaker 01

  Really, one letter?

• 1:11:50Speaker 02

  Is the letter H?

• 1:11:51Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 1:11:52Speaker 02

  I was just gonna say.

• 1:11:52Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 1:11:53Speaker 02

  From the word hinge.

• 1:11:55Speaker 04

Let's go. I didn't even think of that.

• 1:11:57Speaker 01

All right, flip 'em and read. What do we got?

• 1:12:00Speaker 02

  That was sick.

• 1:12:02Speaker 01

  I wrote Quantum Hinge.

• 1:12:04Speaker 04

  Nope.

• 1:12:05Speaker 01

  I wrote nothing.

• 1:12:06Speaker 04

  Nope, that's a brand.

• 1:12:07Speaker 01

I wrote Armored Aluminum Hinge? Is that what it was?

• 1:12:11Speaker 04

  No.

• 1:12:12Speaker 01

  Was it not?

• 1:12:12Speaker 04

  It's close.

• 1:12:13Speaker 01

  Aluminum?

• 1:12:14Speaker 04

  It was Armor Flex Hinge.

• 1:12:17Speaker 01

  Armor. Armor Flex. Flex Aluminum.

• 1:12:20Speaker 04

Cause they're flexin'. How flexible their hinges.

• 1:12:22Speaker 01

Oh, I feel like that's like half credit. Oh, well. Dang. We don't do. Take it up with the registrar. I would be, if this was closest without going over, I would've gotten it.

• 1:12:34Speaker 01

You know what I mean. Armor. Uh, yeah. Okay, that's it. Thanks for, thanks for watching the pod this week. Like I said, in the comment section, let us know what stuff you want to see reviewed. My best friend, Ian, who you guys all know now, listens to the podcast every week, but has never watched the video version. Oh. And so when I was with him on 4th of July, I was like, yeah, I sat at the big table this week. He was like, what do you mean? He's like, I sat at like the host table. He's like, what do you mean? You're not a host? I was like, no, I sit at what? And he's like, I don't watch. Like, I just, I only listen. I was like, dude, I literally sit in the corner of the room at a separate table. We stare at a mic. I know. And he was like, that's crazy. He's like, I thought you were just like really quiet.
