I had a Tina Belcher ass my whole fucking life. It was just like a convex board. And it is not as convex.

• 0:39Drew Afualo?

  No, it is not.

• 0:40Speaker 01

And I want people to know.

• 0:41Drew Afualo?

You need them to know. Nice, right, and tight. Yeah, there you go. Pop it a little.

• 0:56Drew Afualo?

Hey, everyone, and welcome back to another episode of The Comment Section Show, starring me, your fave, everybody knows me, who cares about me. Onto the guest today, we have an all-star, one of my faves ever to exist in the history of time, always, the one, the only, JVN. I'm here.

• 1:11Speaker 01

I think we have to start off with the elephant in the room that everyone wants to know right away.

• 1:15Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 1:16Speaker 01

Do your people know who made these boots, or what are these boots? They are the cutest boots. I'm obsessed with them.

• 1:21Drew Afualo?

I think they're Dolce Vita. Yes, they are.

• 1:23Speaker 01

They are? So fucking cute. And they are so good on your ankle.

• 1:27Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 1:28Speaker 01

I'm just very passionate about a pant-to-shoe transition.

• 1:31Drew Afualo?

  Oh, my god, T.

• 1:32Speaker 01

And the pant-to-shoe transition that you're giving us right now, like, I also notoriously have very dead, unreactive nipples. And it's making them kind of tingle. Because it's so good.

• 1:42Drew Afualo?

I'm honored my Dolce Vita boots could do that for you and your nipples. I think that's wonderful.

• 1:45Speaker 01

And all those TMI right at the top.

• 1:47Drew Afualo?

No, it's a beautiful thing. And honestly, you know what's funny? I got these in PR, and like, probably two years ago, they're probably one of my most worn boots.

• 1:55Speaker 01

Look at how good they held up.

• 1:56Drew Afualo?

I know, and I love a pointy toe underneath a jean. And it's so funny you say that about the boot transition, because that's also why I like these, because they go up a little high. So it looks a little, you know.

• 2:07Speaker 01

I love how it looks. Pointed toes make my bunnions hurt so bad. And in my advanced age, I can't even do pointed toes anymore.

• 2:14Drew Afualo?

  Really?

• 2:15Speaker 01

No, I can feel my, I can feel my feet pounding in my ears and my third eye. And I get grouchy, and I just can't do it anymore. So I just, I can't do pointed toes.

• 2:23Drew Afualo?

Honestly, that's so real. When I wear uncomfortable shoes, like, literally, I was joking about this with my sister. Like, when my feet hurt, I'm on a clock. Like, if I'm at an event and my feet hurt, like, it's about a thirty-minute window before I start turning terrible. Because my feet hurt so bad.

• 2:41Speaker 01

I'm not kidding you. Sometimes I wonder if Rolling Stone was because I didn't know that about myself yet. Because, like, I just didn't know how to wear shoes. Like, when I wear uncomfortable shoes, I become crazy. Like, my inner bad girl. No, because I can literally feel my bunions, like, pounding in my ears and my third eye. It is the worst feeling. And the showrunner from Queer Eye was literally like, "You can't wear these shoes anymore." Like, "You just act fucking crazy when you wear these shoes." And then I learned, platforms, no stilettos. It has to be a platform, and it has to be a round toe, or like, a square toe. Like, my feet have to have room, or I freak out. Like, I just am not myself.

• 3:19Drew Afualo?

I compared it, I feel like Venom, like Tom Hardy in Venom, you know? Like, how it's like, it like tells him to smash people's heads in the walls. And he's like, "Oh, can't, can't." That's how I feel, too. Like, my feet are telling me to do awful things.

• 3:32Speaker 01

Get the shoes off, and then you're like, "Oh, my god, there I am again."

• 3:35Drew Afualo?

  I'm so sorry about that.

• 3:36Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 3:36Drew Afualo?

I don't know who that was.

• 3:37Speaker 01

I don't know who that person was. You know what's been coming up a lot for me lately? You're too young to really stand the Bodyguard with Whitney Houston, true or false?

• 3:48Drew Afualo?

No, I do, I'm familiar with the, and is it Kevin Costner?

• 3:52Speaker 01

  Yeah, of course.

• 3:52Drew Afualo?

Yeah, so, okay, and I know that they had, like, a very real love, yes?

• 3:56Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 3:57Drew Afualo?

Like, that was never really pursued?

• 3:59Speaker 01

Oh, no, they pursued it at the end.

• 4:01Drew Afualo?

Or was it one of those things where he was like, "The greatest love of my life was always her"?

• 4:06Speaker 01

Well, you don't really know because the runway at the end, like, the airplane is such a big deal. But the reason I bring it up

• 4:11Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 4:12Speaker 01

Is there's this very important scene where, and I don't want to do any spoilers, it's such a good movie, you should watch it. But, basically, there is this stalker who's like trying to hurt Whitney. And you think you know who it is, but then you find out that her sister hired this hitman. And Kevin's like, to the sister, he's like, "How could you do this? Like, why would you do this to your sister?" And she was like, "I don't know, I was very stoned." And even as an eight-year-old, I was like, "What weed were you smoking that you got high and like tried to kill your sister?" Like, that was like not, and like, what Ronald Reagan-ass writers wrote that line? Because it's just not even true. But I do think that for this younger generation, they should see the Bodyguard and know it more intrinsically, because it is- Such a fucking incredible piece of cinema.

• 4:57Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 4:57Speaker 01

And I just want people to like know it in their bones how I do, cuz it's so moving.

• 5:03Drew Afualo?

  I agree with you.

• 5:04Speaker 01

  It really is like beautiful.

• 5:05Drew Afualo?

I, I, and I've seen like clips from it and I'm familiar with the lore from it. Did, did they have something in real life?

• 5:12Speaker 01

I don't know, but the way their interviews, the way they spoke about each other in interviews was really like heartening and beautiful. Did you ever see the clip of like when he throws up the scarf and it like splits over the sword?

• 5:22Drew Afualo?

Oh my gosh, she can do anything.

• 5:25Speaker 01

It's so hot. No, it's Kevin Costner, they're like, and then Kevin like takes this like scarf like off, like that she's like wearing and he like throws it up. And for some reason, there's like a sword on the wall and I don't know, he's like a bodyguard, so there's like a sword and like, and the, the scarf like falls over this sword and it like fucking splits it in half.

• 5:42Drew Afualo?

  Ooh, it's like ASMR.

• 5:44Speaker 01

I literally have the chills. Like, I wanna start, I want this couch to fuck me right now.

• 5:49Drew Afualo?

  You thinking about it?

• 5:50Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 5:50Drew Afualo?

  Makes you wanna go crazy?

• 5:51Speaker 01

Yeah, people should watch A Bodyguard.

• 5:53Drew Afualo?

I'm happy, I think that's great advice, honestly.

• 5:56Speaker 01

I didn't know you were gonna go there, I'm sorry.

• 5:57Drew Afualo?

I'll get started, honestly. I haven't even seen it.

• 5:59Speaker 01

  And then let me know.

• 6:00Drew Afualo?

I will, I would love to. I'll text you about it. Also, that does remind me, I did see the new Wicked movie last night.

• 6:07Speaker 01

You guys, I literally didn't get invited. Am I like, am I just over? Like, I didn't even get invited to the fucking Wicked premiere. Like, I'm just, I'm just like, do they just think I'm like in Texas and just don't even wanna come?

• 6:20Drew Afualo?

You, well, also, I think you're just so famous that sometimes I think they're like, well, they're probably busy.

• 6:25Speaker 01

That's the craziest thing I've ever heard. I am so pro Wicked, I can't believe, I'm pro Ho, I'm pro Wicked, I love Wicked.

• 6:30Drew Afualo?

  And you're pro musical theater.

• 6:31Speaker 01

I'm so pro musical theater. I love musical theater, I love Wicked. Was it everything that we thought it was gonna be?

• 6:36Drew Afualo?

It really was. Like, I say with full chest, full heart, like lived up to the hype and then some, like truly. And I was like, these are not spoilers by the way, but like when they do As Long As You're Mine, okay. T, T, T, T, T, but also, I literally, like, it was far more like sensual.

• 6:56Speaker 01

  Oh, sench.

• 6:57Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, like sexy. No.

• 6:59Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 7:00Drew Afualo?

As long as you're mine between, uh, well, I guess you could say maybe sapphic if it counts, like Cynthia Revo, Jonathan Bailey.

• 7:05Speaker 01

Oh, I forgot, that's the, I was, that's not the song I was thinking of.

• 7:08Drew Afualo?

Oh, as long as you're mine.

• 7:09Speaker 01

I was thinking of, um, because I knew you.

• 7:12Drew Afualo?

  Oh, yeah.

• 7:13Speaker 01

Yeah, and I was like, I was like, oh, are they bringing like a lesbian thing to it?

• 7:16Drew Afualo?

And then you go like, why didn't they invite me?

• 7:17Speaker 01

I love that, and I was like, so gay. Yeah, but no, but so that was more sensual, Cynthia and Jonathan got really sench?

• 7:23Drew Afualo?

Yeah, like, it was far more sensual than I thought it was gonna be, but it was T.

• 7:27Speaker 01

  I love.

• 7:27Drew Afualo?

It was so, honestly, if you love Jonathan Bailey.

• 7:30Speaker 01

  Who doesn't?

• 7:31Drew Afualo?

If you're attracted to him in any way, shape, or form, that's the movie for you.

• 7:35Speaker 01

Not to name drop, but one time I met him in real life on the set of Bridgerton, and he was so nice.

• 7:41Drew Afualo?

  Really?

• 7:42Speaker 01

Yeah, like, he was so nice, and I was like, oh, I under, like, the charisma is really charisma-ing.

• 7:47Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 7:47Speaker 01

Now, I know this is your podcast, and you need to be asking me questions, but I want to ask you a question.

• 7:51Drew Afualo?

  Please do.

• 7:52Speaker 01

Cause you're the only one of the two of us that saw Wicked.

• 7:53Drew Afualo?

  Yes.

• 7:54Speaker 01

And I don't know what they're gonna be up against, but I'm really hoping for an Oscar for our girls.

• 8:00Drew Afualo?

  Yes, I agree.

• 8:01Speaker 01

I, and, and, and like, yes, it's an honor to be nominated, but I do believe that I don't care who they're up against, like, if they don't both win, I've been through too much. Like, and I think we all have, like culturally, like.

• 8:12Drew Afualo?

  We earned it.

• 8:13Speaker 01

So you think that they will, right?

• 8:15Drew Afualo?

I, I mean, I think they should. I don't know if they will. And, uh, the only reason I say I don't know if they will.

• 8:22Speaker 01

Cause you don't know who we're up against.

• 8:22Drew Afualo?

Yeah, well, and also it's the Academy, so I don't know. Like, the way, the way they pick is very confusing to me sometimes.

• 8:28Speaker 01

Cause who would've known, like, Enora was gonna beat Demi Moore, but I just was always, I've just been like Tyra Banks for Tiffany for the girls from Wicked. Like, I am rooting for them so hard, and I just, I want them to win so bad. I want both of them to win.

• 8:43Drew Afualo?

  I agree.

• 8:44Speaker 01

Like, I have not wanted someone to win this bad since Michelle Kwan in 1998, okay?

• 8:48Drew Afualo?

I knew you were gonna reference Michelle Kwan, I knew I felt it.

• 8:51Speaker 01

I've not wanted this, and, and I wanted that so much that sometimes I wonder if it was my fault that, like, she got silver. You know, like, I don't know if I willed it from, like, Quincy Eleanor, but I just, so I don't wanna want it too much that I, like, chase it away energetically, but I am, like, literally ripping my hair out thinking about it. And, and earlier, when you were telling me about, like, my fingers were, like, gripping, like, I am, like, so, my body's ready.

• 9:10Drew Afualo?

They were, like, truly unbelievable in it.

• 9:12Speaker 01

  They were, right?

• 9:14Drew Afualo?

  It was unbelievable.

• 9:14Speaker 01

  How was the glam?

• 9:16Drew Afualo?

It was so good. Honestly, especially Cynthia's. I think Cynthia, oh, she looks so stunning. I, obviously Ariana Grande always looks stunning, but you know Glenda has a very similar look throughout.

• 9:25Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 9:26Drew Afualo?

They were giving Elphaba range a little bit in her looks. Loved.

• 9:29Speaker 01

Okay, not to name it up as well, but I did get to interview Frances Hannon on the pod.

• 9:33Drew Afualo?

  Okay.

• 9:33Speaker 01

Who is the beauty designer. She like did all the hair and makeup.

• 9:36Drew Afualo?

  Love.

• 9:36Speaker 01

She was like the lead principal for it.

• 9:37Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 9:38Speaker 01

And she did tell me that Elphaba has like more of a transition from her story visually.

• 9:43Drew Afualo?

  Yes.

• 9:43Speaker 01

Um, especially with like the hair.

• 9:45Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, totally.

• 9:45Speaker 01

And she was telling, like, the, the story about like how she achieved Elphaba's green was really interesting.

• 9:51Drew Afualo?

  Cool.

• 9:52Speaker 01

It, I, Frances Hannon would be, if you're a big Wicked Queen, you should get her on the pod. She's like incredible.

• 9:58Drew Afualo?

Amazing. And I had Cynthia on.

• 10:00Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 10:00Drew Afualo?

I had Cynthia on the pod and she is a light, a gem.

• 10:04Speaker 01

  I love her so much.

• 10:04Drew Afualo?

I bet people would hate to know that she is so nice. She is so nice and funny and sweet.

• 10:10Speaker 01

I have another story about her.

• 10:11Drew Afualo?

And hilarious. Please, let's. I love her.

• 10:13Speaker 01

This one day, I was minding my own business in Bergdorf's in New York City.

• 10:15Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 10:16Speaker 01

And I was with my husband and we were shopping and it was like a Wednesday and he was like, "Don't shit your pants in public right now. Like, I need you to like not..."

• 10:24Drew Afualo?

  Lock in.

• 10:25Speaker 01

Yes. But when you turn around, Cynthia's literally like right there. Like, we're both at Bergdorf's all at the same time and she was alone. She was just like not even with like a gigantic entree. She was just like shopping on her own.

• 10:36Drew Afualo?

  Tea.

• 10:37Speaker 01

But we had met this one other time, so it wasn't like I was like, but I just was like, I have to be cool and I don't want to be too much. So I just was like, "Oh my god, hi." And then she was like, "Hey," in like her British accent.

• 10:48Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 10:49Speaker 01

And then I was like, "Oh my god, it's really good to see you. Like, enjoy your shopping. Okay, love you." I'm pretty sure I came off really cool.

• 10:55Drew Afualo?

  I'm sure.

• 10:55Speaker 01

And like not trying too hard.

• 10:56Drew Afualo?

  I'm sure she loved.

• 10:57Speaker 01

So I wanted, but, because I, what I really wanted to do is invite myself to like hang out with her and like go up and get tea on the seventh floor. But I didn't.

• 11:04Drew Afualo?

You held back and that's good. You exercised restraint. I'm proud of you.

• 11:08Speaker 01

  Leave them wanting more.

• 11:10Drew Afualo?

I literally love, I loved talking to her. She was the sweetest and like, she's funny.

• 11:16Speaker 01

  Right?

• 11:16Drew Afualo?

  She's so fucking funny.

• 11:17Speaker 01

Well, cause she's a musical theater person.

• 11:18Drew Afualo?

I know, so she's got a lot of wit and banter about her. I fucking love that.

• 11:22Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 11:22Drew Afualo?

Ariana Grande, I've met in passing at the Oscars. I haven't gotten to meet her for real for real yet, but I would love to. She's like, I'm chasing her down for the pod. Hopefully it comes true.

• 11:34Speaker 01

I, I did get to meet her and between her and Michelle Kwan.

• 11:40Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 11:40Speaker 01

Like, I have just been spoiled by meeting my heroes. Like, they've all like smashed my expectations, like in such a big way.

• 11:48Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 11:49Speaker 01

That it's kind of like, dang.

• 11:51Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 11:52Speaker 01

Like, now it's like, even if I meet a hero and they're not that nice, it's like, fine for me, cause like Ariana and Michelle Kwan have been and they both follow me and we're like friends and so get out of here. You know what I mean?

• 12:01Drew Afualo?

That's how I felt meeting Beyonce.

• 12:03Speaker 01

Now that is a fucking flex.

• 12:05Drew Afualo?

Yeah, cause like, I got asked once in an interview, like, do you get nervous interviewing, like, celebrities and stuff? Whether it's on the show or in the carpets? And I was like, no, never. I, I never get starstruck. Um, I think that's like a cool thing about me, that I never get starstruck, but I think that's what makes me, uh, it's easier to chat with.

• 12:21Speaker 01

  And good at it.

• 12:21Drew Afualo?

Right. And I was like, except Beyonce, like, that's different. That doesn't count, that's different.

• 12:27Speaker 01

For those of us that don't know this story, would you mind telling, like, how did that, like, where, where, when, why, how, everything, you tell me everything?

• 12:31Drew Afualo?

I got invited to, um, her birthday show, like, of Renaissance.

• 12:37Speaker 01

  In what year?

• 12:38Drew Afualo?

That was twenty twenty-three. Yeah, so I, I went to the birthday show, that's where they had Diana Ross and like, I think, who else was there this year?

• 12:46Speaker 01

I think I remember Lizzo being there.

• 12:48Drew Afualo?

She was at one, but she wasn't at the birthday show with me. Yeah, why? Yeah, K Tronada, like, it was like a stack show, cause it was her birthday show, but at the time, I went with Beyonce's hair brand, like, they didn't say what it was.

• 13:02Speaker 01

  Sacred, oh.

• 13:02Drew Afualo?

So we had to sign, yeah, so it had no name at the time. And so, we just said, like, Beyonce's hair brand, that's who I went with. And it was funny, cause I went two days before that with SoFi. And my team was like, do you wanna go again two days later? And I was like, yeah, I do.

• 13:16Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 13:16Drew Afualo?

And so I went to that show and which is now as we know sacred. But at the time, I remember they they had cars sent for us and they had like. Um, a bunch of like goodie bags and stuff, but they had recordings of her saying like. Hi Drew and then thank you so much for coming to my birthday show and help me celebrate my new brand like something like that. It was like a personalized message. And when we got to the show, I remember asking like. When we were like hanging out and watching and partying and stuff, I was like, so like, is that? AI if it is, lie to me. If it is, lie to me cuz I'm gonna tell everyone that was really her. And then she was laughing and she goes, no, it was um, she recorded everyone's names. Like she said hi and then whoever was cuz I think there was only like twelve of us. And so she said she did everyone's names, but the rest of the message she did once, obviously, and then they just stitched them together.

• 14:03Drew Afualo?

Girl, and so then like now we know as sacred, I got invited to a sacred launch party the following year. Like in February and so which was last year.

• 14:11Speaker 01

Was that when everyone was in white?

• 14:12Drew Afualo?

  Yes.

• 14:13Speaker 01

Yes, I reme- I think I remember that picture.

• 14:14Drew Afualo?

Yeah, so we went, I went to the sacred hair launch and like I went with Brittany Broski like. Cuz they said no plus ones and when they said no plus ones and stuff like that, I was like, okay, she's probably gonna be there. So I was thinking at most I would see her from a distance, which is good enough for me.

• 14:29Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 14:29Drew Afualo?

Because she, I'm afraid because I have idolized her for years. Like she's like my girl. She's my queen. And so when we went together, I was like, she's. You don't think like, I was like, no, I don't think so. I think like she'll be there and like announce or whatever. And we're like, okay, cool, cool, cool. And then we did see her from a distance and she was with Blue and and Miss Tina. And they were all together.

• 14:53Drew Afualo?

Oh, my god, it was crazy. And so we watched it and that was like more than enough for me. I was like, perfect, done. I can die happy. It's totally fine. And then after the party, we were like kind of shuffling out and then. Um, my girl who I worked with from Sacred, she was like, you two come with me. And so we went with her.

• 15:08Speaker 01

  You and Brittany?

• 15:09Drew Afualo?

Yeah, and so Brittany was like, what's going on?

• 15:11Speaker 01

I saw she was gonna fly on the wall to like, watch the two of you guys get to meet Beyonce. Like, that was like, I need to see like, that footage. It would have been so cute.

• 15:17Drew Afualo?

  It was ridiculous.

• 15:18Speaker 01

I bet you two were trying to like, keep it together. I love Brittany so much.

• 15:21Drew Afualo?

We were, we were trying, and you know us, girl, like, we're big fucking yappers. So like, we were so mute backstage. Like, we went behind this little curtain. We were standing for probably only like, twenty, thirty minutes, but it felt like hours. And we were standing there, we were kind of looking at each other, and we were like, yeah, you know. And she was trying to make conversation, and I was going, yeah, yeah, yeah. And then I don't even fucking remember what we were saying. And then I go, honestly dude, I can't talk, I'm so nervous. And she goes, me either. Let's just stand here and quiet. And I was like, okay. So we just sat in silence.

• 15:47Speaker 01

It's probably good to ground yourself.

• 15:49Drew Afualo?

Yeah, had to. And then as soon as we walked up, they were like, everyone, um, needs to put all phones like, in a bag, zip up the bags. Like, no phones. I don't want to see any phone.

• 15:58Speaker 01

  No phones.

• 15:58Drew Afualo?

And we were like, okay, no worries, no worries, no worries. And they were taking us in groups of like, five or six.

• 16:04Speaker 01

Was there a photographer? So you at least had a picture?

• 16:06Drew Afualo?

Well, there was one in there. I assumed there would be one. I was like, oh, I hope there's a picture, otherwise no one's gonna believe me.

• 16:12Speaker 01

Need to document, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 16:13Drew Afualo?

Yeah. And so when we went inside, like-

• 16:14Speaker 01

Oh, because that's probably the picture I saw.

• 16:16Drew Afualo?

Yes. So when we went inside, like, she was sitting in there with, with Blue and Miss Tina and like, her whole team. And then she was just standing there waiting for us. And then she was like, hi, like, and it was just so overwhelming. Like, I really felt like this.

• 16:29Speaker 01

  What did you say?

• 16:30Drew Afualo?

I, I really genuinely felt like this. The whole time, I was just eyes wide.

• 16:34Speaker 01

  Did you say anything?

• 16:35Drew Afualo?

I did. Like, she went around the, the circle and introduced herself to everyone.

• 16:39Speaker 01

And she was like, oh, was she like, this is Blue, and this is?

• 16:42Drew Afualo?

What's funny is our friend Alicia Marie, who's been a YouTuber forever, um, she was with us in our group, and Blue Ivy is actually a huge fan of Alicia's YouTube channel. So that's why Alicia-

• 16:54Speaker 01

  Yeah, I know.

• 16:55Drew Afualo?

And so, she went up to her, she was like, I'm such a big fan. Like, Blue was talking to Alicia, and we were so happy for her, because we were like, what the fuck, dude? This is crazy. It's just crazy to think of someone like Beyonce being on TikTok. Yeah, being on TikTok. It's just crazy to think about. And so, me and Brittany, like, she said hi, and she's like, you look amazing. And I said, ah! Thank you so much, thank you. Love you, huge fan. Thank you so much.

• 17:25Drew Afualo?

I was so like, I literally was like, I'm gonna freak out. I'm getting nervous thinking about it again. I'm gonna freak out. I have loved, I literally, I didn't even get to tell her this because I have, I've had this story in my head for years. I'm like, if I ever met her. When I, when, when Lemonade came out, you know, she only released it on title because.

• 17:44Speaker 01

Yes, I remember I was there. I literally just canceled my title like three weeks ago.

• 17:48Drew Afualo?

I, I still have mine too. I literally overdrafted my bank account because I had no fucking money.

• 17:53Speaker 01

  Resonates.

• 17:53Drew Afualo?

That's how fucking bad I needed it. I was like, I need this album so bad.

• 17:57Speaker 01

I knew it when that came out that I had to break up with my boyfriend at the time because when EXO came on and, and All Night.

• 18:03Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 18:04Speaker 01

He, like, I was sobbing, fighting for my life, watching it live. Because remember like it came out, like on the telly, like all the music videos?

• 18:10Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 18:10Speaker 01

I was like, fighting for my life, like, love, like, love and lights out. I was like, oh god! And then, and like, my, the boyfriend at the time was looking at me all crazy. I was like, this is never gonna work.

• 18:19Drew Afualo?

Yeah, he's like, you're relating to this?

• 18:21Speaker 01

Yeah, like, our worldviews are like too different. This is like, never gonna fucking work out. She, and then in real life, just like even more stunning than, like, anything we've ever seen, right?

• 18:30Drew Afualo?

She looks airbrushed. She looks like if you airbrushed a, a beautiful, perfect picture of someone and it came to life.

• 18:35Speaker 01

Just like beyond reproach. Just beyond reproach.

• 18:38Drew Afualo?

And then when they were, like, she chatted with all of us and like.

• 18:41Speaker 01

  How long?

• 18:42Drew Afualo?

I would say probably a good like twenty minutes, like, all of us.

• 18:45Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 18:45Drew Afualo?

Like, and so that, I know, which is like so much time. And she doesn't do meet and greets anymore, like, ever anymore. And even Brittany was so like, uh, scared and nervous too, because like, she's, we both see her the same way. And I was like, telling Brittany, tell her, she's from Houston. Like, I was like, tell her you're from Houston. I was like, nudging Brittany. I was like, you're from Houston, tell her, tell her. And so they were like, uh, chatting about Houston and everything. And it was so, it was so fucking awesome. And then, they were like, let's take a picture. And then they just literally like, phew, like, popped up, like, these bright lights and everything that like are her.

• 19:16Speaker 01

  A TV's always ready.

• 19:17Drew Afualo?

Right, her lighting specifically. And then they took all the pictures. That's how they did it.

• 19:21Speaker 01

I love that she has like a setting, like, ready, like, at all times. You know, like, when people come up to you, like, like, when people come up to me, like, I, there's like a certain, like, kind of like things that I can probably predict that someone's gonna say to me.

• 19:33Drew Afualo?

  Totally.

• 19:33Speaker 01

And I would think that for you, there's like a top three things that. What the fuck do you think the top three things were that people said to Beyonce before she had like such a big circle? Like, I wonder what people, but they're probably like, I love Jumpin' Jumpin'. It's probably been like so long that like, it's probably been since like, you know, 2001. She's been like, these hoes are not coming within fucking 50 feet of me. Like, they are just too thirsty and desperate.

• 19:54Drew Afualo?

  And that's enough.

• 19:55Speaker 01

True story, when the four originally, oh my god, am I having a stroke? When the four original Destiny's Child, like when it was like Latavia and like that other one, they came to my fucking junior high and did a concert, like with Beyonce and Kelly. And then like the other two, and actually, I think, I think Michelle Williams wasn't even in it yet. I think it was like the other two.

• 20:16Drew Afualo?

Oh, yeah, so the OG OG.

• 20:18Speaker 01

Was like just becoming a thing and, and, um,

• 20:21Drew Afualo?

  Love that song.

• 20:22Speaker 01

And Bills, Bills, Bills was out, I believe.

• 20:24Drew Afualo?

  And I love that song.

• 20:25Speaker 01

And it was like a $10 ticket to like our junior high gym. And it was the big, and it was like a house of derion. They were wearing like mirrors, like it's still, like, it was like so iconic. I can't believe I got to see it.

• 20:34Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 20:34Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 20:35Drew Afualo?

That's so awesome. I've also worked with Kelly. I worked with Kelly, her and I were in an NBA commercial together. Which is so funny.

• 20:41Speaker 01

  I love her.

• 20:42Drew Afualo?

Such a hilarious thing to say. She is so nice too, like so sweet.

• 20:46Speaker 01

Her song Defender, I, I love, and her Red Lights from like Back with Nelly and, um, and, uh, what was that song? Love You.

• 20:56Drew Afualo?

  Oh, yes, yeah.

• 20:57Speaker 01

The Red Lights. I've always loved her. I've always loved me some Kelly. And I, I love Michelle. I, Destiny's Child, I'll do anything for Destiny's Child.

• 21:03Drew Afualo?

I think the same thing. I'm like, a two out of three. No, I gotta meet Michelle.

• 21:06Speaker 01

  Ooh.

• 21:07Drew Afualo?

I've met two out of the three.

• 21:08Speaker 01

I got to, um, I, I, I almost lied to you and I'm so glad that I caught myself. I saw Death Becomes Her and I thought she was gonna be in there, but it was, but it was her, it was like the understudy and, cause Michelle was in that, but in, at first I was sad.

• 21:21Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 21:21Speaker 01

But it was the understudy's like Broadway debut and that performance and she did really good. So then I was like, okay, like full slate, but I've also not seen her IRL. Michelle Williams, and I wish that I had.

• 21:30Drew Afualo?

I've never seen her in, in, in real life either. I, I have to get her, the same way I do like the Blackpink girls. I've met two of the four Blackpink members.

• 21:39Speaker 01

  Ah.

• 21:39Drew Afualo?

And that apparently my average is very high. So, cause I've met Jenny and Lisa. La La Lisa, if you will.

• 21:46Speaker 01

Lisa was in White Lotus, right? Yeah, she's so pretty.

• 21:49Drew Afualo?

  That's where I met her.

• 21:49Speaker 01

  They're also stunning.

• 21:50Drew Afualo?

Yeah, they're also stunning and so nice. I talked to, I interviewed Jenny at the Billboard Women in Music Awards, and she was so nice. They get the bitches in a tizzy.

• 22:01Speaker 01

  They really do.

• 22:02Drew Afualo?

They have those girls geeking. I, I could not believe how many people were down there when she was talking to me. Yes, and the way that they like, everyone was like, oh my god, oh my god. Like, all around, uh, like, where I was at Billboard, because I was almost like underneath the stage, kind of like. And I, I was next to photos and all that stuff where I was doing the interviews with them, so they would sometimes come with all their team, like, you know what I mean, like, their glam people, their managers, whatever. She came with her big team, but then they, there were just hor- like, a bunch of people came out of nowhere, and they were like, oh my god, oh my fucking god, oh my god. It was crazy to see.

• 22:42Speaker 01

  I bet it's like scary.

• 22:43Drew Afualo?

Yeah, they love them, oh my gosh.

• 22:46Speaker 01

On my TikTok algorithm, I will get those videos. Who's the one of Blackpink who like, sometimes like, seems like she doesn't know the dance, and then people like rag on her for like not knowing the dance is good, but she's really just like adjusting her mic pack?

• 22:56Drew Afualo?

  I honestly don't know.

• 22:57Speaker 01

Was that not on your algorithm?

• 22:59Drew Afualo?

  Maybe not.

• 23:00Speaker 01

Oh my god, yeah, there's like, there's this like one girl.

• 23:01Drew Afualo?

I'm new to the K-pop world.

• 23:03Speaker 01

There's this one girl who like, people rag on her on Blackpink, I don't know which one it is, who like, and they say that like, she doesn't like, she's like missing her dance steps, and, oh my god, am I like dying? But, um, but yeah, whatever, I love Lisa Blackpink.

• 23:13Drew Afualo?

I do, I, I'm, I'm new to the K-pop world, I'm working my way in there, like, Cat's Eye, I've met them.

• 23:19Speaker 01

  Ah.

• 23:19Drew Afualo?

Love them. They're so beautiful and stunning and talented, and they're also all the exact same height, if you can believe it.

• 23:26Speaker 01

I've been knowing about this K-pop for so long. In 2008 at Miss Universe, there was this girl named Boa, or like B.O.A., and she's, she's like this K-pop diva, and she sang at Miss Universe in like 2008, and I had been like on the K-pop team since then.

• 23:38Drew Afualo?

  Oh, love.

• 23:40Speaker 01

I feel like millennials who like beauty pageants may know what I'm talking about.

• 23:44Drew Afualo?

Honestly, I'm a little, I was like, I was like a born and bred fangirl. Like, when I was younger, I loved, like, the Jonas Brothers were like my thing. Like, I was like a diehard Jonas Brother fan. And I have met them, and that was fun, and full circle. I like wrote fanfiction about them and everything. Like, I was like balls.

• 24:01Speaker 01

  What was your fanfiction?

• 24:02Drew Afualo?

Oh, my god. You know what's funny is my, typically, fanfictions are meant to be written in a way where like, you're in the story. Yeah, no, mine was not.

• 24:10Speaker 01

  Just about them.

• 24:11Drew Afualo?

Yeah, it was just about them. Like, it was like a third-person POV of their life, like.

• 24:15Speaker 01

What was it like? Could you like recap a chapter?

• 24:17Drew Afualo?

Oh, yeah, like, Miley, they were on the Best Both Worlds Tour, which was like Hannah Montana. That was when-

• 24:22Speaker 01

And that was like just your imagination? Like, you created that?

• 24:25Drew Afualo?

Well, that, that tour was real, but the story was fake, obviously. That was my imagination.

• 24:29Speaker 01

So those ones really were on tour together?

• 24:31Drew Afualo?

Yes, that was when Miley Cyrus and Nick Jonas were like dating. And so it was like such hot, tea-hot gossip. And so like, basically, Miley was the hero in my story. Selena Gomez was the enemy in my story. I have apologized to Selena Gomez already on this podcast live.

• 24:47Speaker 01

  For that?

• 24:48Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, for that specifically.

• 24:49Speaker 01

You didn't know? You were not stoned, but you were little and confused. You were stoned, I don't know?

• 24:57Drew Afualo?

No, I literally was like 11, and my sister was really good at coding, like on MySpace. So we were literally working together to like build a fanfiction website, and we were like, oh, my god, we're gonna put it up. And then, for some reason, like, something just stopped us, as if like, we were like, this is too much. Like, we were like, this is too far.

• 25:15Speaker 01

You guys gave yourselves the ick before you could post it?

• 25:17Drew Afualo?

  Like, we did.

• 25:19Speaker 01

  Oh, my god!

• 25:19Drew Afualo?

Which is funny, because I wrote the entire fucking story. It was like 20-something chapters. I wrote the entire thing, handwrote the entire thing in notebooks. And then Jason made the whole website. It looked beautiful. And we were like, okay, chapter one. And then we were looking up how to upload it, and then for some reason, we were like, I just can't.

• 25:37Speaker 01

Maybe it's good that you self censor. Maybe that would have ended up going viral and like ruined your career.

• 25:41Drew Afualo?

I know, it would have been like my Friday Rebecca Black. I do love her too.

• 25:46Speaker 01

You had your like future use best intentions ready.

• 25:50Drew Afualo?

I know, it was like I came back from the future and I was like, don't.

• 25:53Speaker 01

  Don't do it, girl.

• 25:54Drew Afualo?

  Don't do it.

• 25:54Speaker 01

  This could mess you up.

• 25:55Drew Afualo?

Yeah, you're gonna make grave consequences.

• 25:58Speaker 01

I love that you did fanfiction.

• 26:00Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 26:00Speaker 01

Every time I want to do fanfiction, it's about some like really niche ass movie that no one else has ever heard of. So like wouldn't make sense and like no one else would ever read it.

• 26:07Drew Afualo?

  No audience for it?

• 26:08Speaker 01

No, like none. It's like I want to do fanfiction on like the cutting edge. And like no one knows what this is. It's like a figure skating movie from 1993.

• 26:14Drew Afualo?

And no one knows what I'm talking about.

• 26:15Speaker 01

No one knows what I'm talking about. Some millennials do.

• 26:18Drew Afualo?

I'm so curious, was Michelle Kwan your introduction to ice skating?

• 26:22Speaker 01

She was kind of my like second wave. Christie Yamaguchi was my era like as like a six year old in 1992. It was like Christie Yamaguchi, Nancy Kerrigan, Tonya Harding. They and Midori Ito, they and like kind of story abonally, they whipped me into a fucking frenzy. Then Michelle came on the scene and she took me out. Like she did, she Tonya Hardinged me. Like I fell so in love with her and never fell out of love. She, I mean, I already loved skating, but she made me fall. She was like my number one like fervent like person.

• 26:57Drew Afualo?

I love that. I was so curious.

• 26:59Speaker 01

And back then too, like figure skaters careers like lasted longer. So like I really, I mean, she did like three, really four Olympic cycles because she was the alternate in 94. Then 96, she was, excuse me, who's talking? She was the alternate 94, then in 1988, she went, she went in 2002 and then she went in 2006 and got injured. There and that, and I was literally just talking about Adam, with Adam Rapan about this today because I had him on my podcast. Not to name drop. But she, that injury was like how Emily Hughes got to skate in the Olympics, which I thought was so interesting. I forgot about that.

• 27:32Drew Afualo?

  Very cool.

• 27:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 27:33Drew Afualo?

I just love that you love ice skating so much.

• 27:35Speaker 01

I love it so much and gymnastics, like encyclopedic girl, encyclopedic. Like obsession.

• 27:41Drew Afualo?

Yeah, you're like a Rolodex of information.

• 27:43Speaker 01

  Yeah, it's too much.

• 27:44Drew Afualo?

  I love that, though.

• 27:44Speaker 01

If you ever want to watch together, let me know.

• 27:46Drew Afualo?

Yeah, was, what was it about ice skating and gymnastics that really hooked you? I'm so curious.

• 27:50Speaker 01

I think it was, as a small, as a, as a gay kid in a very small town.

• 27:55Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 27:56Speaker 01

There was this like, something about these women, these young women, having like, being so strong and having all of this like attention on them for something that they had worked so hard on.

• 28:07Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 28:07Speaker 01

I just thought that was so amazing.

• 28:09Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 28:09Speaker 01

And I went into witness it.

• 28:11Drew Afualo?

That's so cute. I love that. I, I feel the same way about women in a lot of ways, like, I was talking about this, uh, with my friend recently, where I was talking about watching women. Oh, who was I talking, I was talking about Rosalia, her new, her new album.

• 28:24Speaker 01

  I heard it's incredible.

• 28:25Drew Afualo?

No, it's perfect. I was like talking to my girlfriend about it. But I was saying like, there are some people, women namely, that I can think of in my head, that I feel like, almost like regardless of what your opinions are on religion, or like, a belief in anything else, right, the universe, whatever it is you believe in, that's spiritual. There's something about women I can think of, whose art form is so intense and pure, that I think to myself, there has to be a higher power.

• 28:53Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 28:53Drew Afualo?

Because there's, that's the only reason they've been put on this earth. That like makes me believe in a higher power. And I was like, geeking out about it with my friend, because I was telling her Rosalia is a perfect example of that to me. Beyonce's another perfect example.

• 29:04Speaker 01

Florence Welsh, I think, is one.

• 29:05Drew Afualo?

  Yes, absolutely.

• 29:07Speaker 01

But you know what, man, I think is a good example?

• 29:08Drew Afualo?

Ooh, I'd love to hear it.

• 29:09Speaker 01

  Bad Bunny.

• 29:10Drew Afualo?

Oh, that's a great example, absolutely.

• 29:12Speaker 01

Like, he's the, well, because I think he said he's like, he's just like straight and he's like an ally, but he like kissed those guys, but, he is like, I'm really not one of those gays who's like, has like a straight guy fetish.

• 29:21Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 29:22Speaker 01

Like, the way that Bad Bunny could just run me over with his car. And I don't even mean like sexually, like he could just run me over and I would take it.

• 29:30Drew Afualo?

  I mean, very literally.

• 29:31Speaker 01

Like, literally Bad Bunny, if like the closest I'm gonna get to you is like you running me over in a fucking car. Run me the, ruin me, girl.

• 29:38Drew Afualo?

Yeah, do it. Do what you gotta do.

• 29:40Speaker 01

Oh, my god. Wow, wow, wow. And it's not even only physical, like, which normally it is for me, like, it's emotional, like, his. His. Everything is just like, wow.

• 29:52Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, I agree.

• 29:53Speaker 01

His POV is just like, fucking shiver me timbers.

• 29:56Drew Afualo?

I agree. And I was telling her, I feel like that's why, another reason why I love women so much.

• 30:02Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 30:02Drew Afualo?

  Because I feel like women.

• 30:04Speaker 01

  I love women.

• 30:04Drew Afualo?

The way that they like, and I feel like you see women this way too, like especially how you were describing how you saw figure skaters, like. The, the way that women see the world and move through the world is like so beautiful to me. That I was like, every time I see a, a woman thriving, like Rosalía for example, I'm always like, no man deserves this.

• 30:24Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 30:24Drew Afualo?

No man alive deserves this. Someone's gonna be lucky enough to, to have you, but no man deserves it.

• 30:30Speaker 01

  Fucking deserve it.

• 30:31Drew Afualo?

  No, it doesn't.

• 30:32Speaker 01

  No.

• 30:32Drew Afualo?

And I only feel that way about women, namely. So like, I feel like you idolize a lot of women too.

• 30:37Speaker 01

  I do, yeah.

• 30:37Drew Afualo?

And I think that's why I have such a profound and pure love for women, which is why like, I was joking about this the other day with my mom too, that like, I've had some pretty negative experiences with women in the workplace and like, in ways of like positions of power, right? I guess like, I've had a lot of negative, negative experiences in a way that could make me hate women very easily or root against them.

• 30:58Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 30:58Drew Afualo?

Um, but even then, I was like, when I'm being treated poorly by a woman. For misogynistic ideals, obviously, I think to myself, there has to be a reason why you're that way. And that makes me feel bad for you. Like I have empathy for you.

• 31:13Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 31:14Drew Afualo?

I don't wanna be friends with you, but I do have empathy for you.

• 31:16Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 31:16Drew Afualo?

And like, it doesn't, I, I always like tell myself, this isn't gonna make me hate women. Because I know what, what pure love from a woman feels like, and that's not it.

• 31:26Speaker 01

I've literally just been saying in my standup comedy tour, I have this bit where I'm like, I do think that part of the key for our healing is gonna be that we learn to love people on the right and the left.

• 31:35Drew Afualo?

  Mm-hmm.

• 31:37Speaker 01

I just wish that we didn't live in a world we had, where we had to learn to love was Sarah Huckabee Sanders. And, and I, I think if we can like be celebrating women in a world that's got fucking Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Caroline Levitt and Pam Bondi. If they can't make us hate fucking women, ain't nobody gonna make us hate women, okay? And I guess could never.

  Um, you know.

• 31:56Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 31:56Speaker 01

These fucking, these lost, well, I don't think they ever really, and Megan fucking Kelly.

Jesus Christ. Like, what, what is going on?

• 32:08Drew Afualo?

  Girl, I don't know.

• 32:09Speaker 01

The white women's water. They have put something in the white women's water. It's, it's always been bad, but it's really bad right now. We are, I am just getting, they're giving us the chug.

• 32:18Drew Afualo?

Right, girl. It's gotta put a stop to it. We need more Chrissy Amaguchi's in the world.

• 32:23Speaker 01

  We need more Chrissy Amaguchi's.

• 32:24Drew Afualo?

We do, we need way more.

• 32:25Speaker 01

  More Michelle Kwan.

• 32:26Drew Afualo?

  Yes.

• 32:27Speaker 01

  More Florence Welch's.

  Yes, I agree.

• 33:10Speaker 01

  Please tell me.

• 33:10Drew Afualo?

Would you like to hear some?

• 33:11Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 33:12Drew Afualo?

Amanda always tries her hardest to look for very rare ones, so I guess we'll see.

• 33:15Speaker 01

  Okay, I'll see.

• 33:16Drew Afualo?

Okay, it says, "In 2013, you co-starred in your sister's short comedy film, Love That Girl, on YouTube."

• 33:23Speaker 01

  It's true.

• 33:23Drew Afualo?

  How was that?

• 33:24Speaker 01

It was just like a three-minute episode, and my, and it's really my stepsister's half-sister, Kim, who we love, but she wrote this like short, or did my friend Emily write it? I can't remember if Kim or Emily wrote it, but yeah, the, the whole gag of that was, is that I was supposed to be one of their like boyfriends. And so the other girls were like, "That's your boyfriend?" And I was like, "Oh, hey, sweetie." It's really funny.

• 33:49Drew Afualo?

I love that. You're like, "You're not giving trade."

• 33:52Speaker 01

Yeah, it wasn't even, no, no, I wasn't.

• 33:55Drew Afualo?

It says, "You were a cheerleader at University of Arizona."

• 33:58Speaker 01

  I was.

• 33:59Drew Afualo?

I do love that. I feel like I did know that about you.

• 34:01Speaker 01

But I only got like a 1.7 GPA my freshman year. I got like all Fs and one B, so I got kicked off the squad.

• 34:08Drew Afualo?

  What was the B in?

• 34:08Speaker 01

  It was in English.

• 34:10Drew Afualo?

  Okay. What happened?

• 34:12Speaker 01

I just did too much cocaine. And I think any is probably too much, but I was 17 and 18, and I just, I, I, I'm from a really little town in Illinois, and then I moved to the university, I moved to Tucson, which is like you- University of Arizona.

• 34:26Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 34:26Speaker 01

And I just, I just found drugs, I found gay stuff, and I just didn't have time to go to class also. And this is so true. At the time, Lifetime, like the TV channel, used to play like four hours of The Golden Girls from like 5:00 AM to like 9:00 AM. And I would go to the early morning cheer practice, cause like I had to, it was like from 5:30 to 6:30. But then I would always be like, instead of going to my first class, I'd be like, oh, I should just go home and watch The Golden Girls. And then I'll go to class, like later. But then I never left the house, cause it was like Golden Girls, and then I just started doing drugs like at 9:00 or 10:00. And then I just kinda lost, yeah, I just kinda lost it. I just kinda fell off, guys. And the other problem was, is that I knew I wanted to do hair.

• 35:08Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 35:08Speaker 01

I knew I wanted to be a hairdresser, so I was like, what am I doing here? Like, this is silly. But yeah, college was not good for me. I ended up turning tricks. I met this pimp online. It was bad, girl.

• 35:20Drew Afualo?

  Oh my god.

• 35:20Speaker 01

No, my Tucson experience was a little bleak. I wrote about it.

• 35:25Drew Afualo?

  Yes, I do know that.

• 35:26Speaker 01

Yeah, it was a little rough, but it really gave me some...

• 36:08Speaker 01

Good experiences and some good street smarts.

• 36:09Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, some perspective.

• 36:11Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 36:11Drew Afualo?

I think so. I mean, we think, if you think about it in the way that you wouldn't be here now, the way you are today, if you didn't have those experiences, I think it's better, a better perspective for you.

• 36:22Speaker 01

  I totally believe in that.

• 36:23Drew Afualo?

Absolutely. But I know you can cheer down.

• 36:26Speaker 01

  I can.

• 36:27Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 36:27Speaker 01

Cheer down, tumble down, all of it.

• 36:29Drew Afualo?

  All of it.

• 36:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 36:30Drew Afualo?

  I know that about you.

• 36:31Speaker 01

Yeah. I mean, I'll do the motions to a chant right now.

• 36:34Drew Afualo?

I also do love that you knew about hair very early on.

• 36:37Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 36:37Drew Afualo?

  That's so tea.

• 36:38Speaker 01

  Always loved hair.

• 36:39Drew Afualo?

Not many people can say that they knew their calling from that young of an age.

• 36:43Speaker 01

And mine was even way before that, but the world was like, no, it needs to be this, it needs to be that, but I knew.

• 36:48Drew Afualo?

Yeah, you knew, and I love that about you.

• 36:50Speaker 01

Yeah, because I wasn't going to be a professional figure skating coach, so what other, you know, I didn't have any ice rinks.

• 36:55Drew Afualo?

That, obviously, it's gotta be hair.

• 36:56Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 36:57Drew Afualo?

Yeah, it has to be, but I think that's a beautiful thing. It's rare. I've noticed that too, because I've, I feel like I've always had a pretty devout sense of purpose, like, from a young age. I like, feel like I knew what I wanted to do, and I was like, I think I have a general idea of how to get there. That was kind of how I was moving to.

• 37:12Speaker 01

I love that you had that clarity.

• 37:14Drew Afualo?

Yeah, but I think, I think I just wasn't sure how I was gonna get there, because I think at the time, I always thought like, I know I like to entertain, and I like to be on camera, but for some reason, I didn't think acting was an option. I don't know why, like, for some reason, I never thought that was an option for me. I was like, and maybe that was me being like a Virgo to, like, even as a child, because I was like, well, I mean, what if I don't get an acting job, then I'll, I need to get a real job. Like, that's how I was thinking when I was very young.

• 37:41Speaker 01

  Baby.

• 37:42Drew Afualo?

Yeah, I was like, well, I have to get something steady so I can have income.

• 37:45Speaker 01

You do have to be so brave, though, to put yourself out there, like, the way that we do, like, in this industry, so I'm really proud of us.

• 37:51Drew Afualo?

  I think so, too.

• 37:52Speaker 01

You do, it's like so much feedback, it's so much.

• 37:54Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 37:55Speaker 01

It just, yeah, it's a lot, I'm proud of us.

• 37:57Drew Afualo?

And I think people underestimate how, like, hard it can be unless it's something like that you're called to. Like, I really do feel like entertaining is my calling.

• 38:06Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 38:07Drew Afualo?

So I feel like people underestimate how hard it can be to get in front of a camera and just like be entertaining and be funny. But, you know, it's a lot of work.

• 38:15Speaker 01

Especially when you're going through it.

• 38:16Drew Afualo?

  Yes, exactly.

• 38:17Speaker 01

  That's when it's really hard.

• 38:18Drew Afualo?

Right, that's where I'm giving Galinda, like, I don't know where I'm pulling from, to entertain the masses.

• 38:23Speaker 01

  I sometimes, I don't know either.

• 38:24Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 38:25Speaker 01

And then that's why I'm proud of us.

• 38:26Drew Afualo?

  I agree.

• 38:27Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 38:27Drew Afualo?

And that's why, I think that's another reason why, too, I, whenever I talk to creator friends, I always tell them to like, make friends, like, get in therapy and make friends. Like, if, if you're gonna do this, and I mean friends who do this for a living, because no one can relate to your problems anymore. And no one really, I mean, like, Genuinely speaking, I really don't think people want to hear about your problems.

• 38:50Speaker 01

  Ah.

• 38:50Drew Afualo?

Like that have real jobs that are hard, like physically taxing, like and and awful like. I would never complain about my issues to like a teacher. Or like in a way that's like, can you believe this? You know what I'm saying?

• 39:03Speaker 01

Yeah, it's also like hard to explain. There's like, I feel like there's just like so much more that goes on that I like never would have known.

• 39:10Drew Afualo?

Same. I said the same thing. I was like, I've talked about it before where. It's like no matter, it's not necessarily this, it's not that this job is the hardest job in the world. It's that this job is the only job I think that has no prior training experience and there's no one you can really talk to. Because until you become someone like a celebrity and influencer or whatever. You're never going to be able to interact with those people to ask them, hey, how did you deal with this? Right? So I feel like it's it's a job that no matter how many jobs you've had before. None of them could prepare you for this one, like no amount of training or like. If I had like a million restaurant jobs, none of that could have prepared me for the problems I have in this job.

• 39:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 39:52Drew Afualo?

They're so specific to this job, which is why I think community is so important because it's like. I need to bounce these ideas or like my frustrations or grievances off someone who understands and can help guide me.

• 40:04Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 40:04Drew Afualo?

Or like I can ask for advice from, which is why I love being friends with people like you or other people who have been in the industry longer than me. So I can ask like, how did you deal with this? Like this is crazy. I don't know how to deal with this.

• 40:15Speaker 01

  Um.

• 40:16Drew Afualo?

It makes me feel less alone.

• 40:17Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 40:17Drew Afualo?

  Less isolating.

• 40:18Speaker 01

I don't mean to aggressively change the subject like this, but I really want you to notice my sweater.

• 40:25Drew Afualo?

Okay, I'd love to take a look.

• 40:28Speaker 01

It's like, I just got it from a vintage shop, you guys. It's vintage Christian Dior. And I just don't know why I wasn't vintage shopping sooner. It's so much cheaper and like cuter.

• 40:36Drew Afualo?

That's actually tea. I've been, uh, not vintage shopping, I guess. I don't know if it counts, but I've been buying stuff off the real real.

• 40:41Speaker 01

  That's like secondhand, I feel.

• 40:43Drew Afualo?

  Secondhand, yeah.

• 40:44Speaker 01

But it's just as great. It's giving sustainable. I also love the real real. But this was from like nineteen eighty nine.

• 40:49Drew Afualo?

  Tea.

• 40:50Speaker 01

I just like that. It's like, it's from Christian Dior.

• 40:53Drew Afualo?

  Oh, tea, okay.

• 40:53Speaker 01

But there's this place called like the Village Vintage and they. Do you like these like pop ups in New York and Austin? I don't know if they do them in LA. But it's like amazing. If you're like a shopping girly.

• 41:03Drew Afualo?

  I do.

• 41:04Speaker 01

My business team is gonna be so excited. Because it is so much more affordable than like new stuff and it's just like kind of really interesting and amazing.

• 41:11Drew Afualo?

It's funny you say that because recently I downloaded the real real and started shopping secondhand on there because. I like don't, I don't really buy like a lot of designer things. I have bought them in the past, but like. It's not something I'm like feening for like every time new things come out. So like when I'm like, I think I want a new bag. I, I always think like going in the store is like a lot of work.

• 41:34Speaker 01

  It takes so long.

• 41:35Drew Afualo?

Yeah, but also too like, cause it's kind of like shopping for a car, you know, they like make you wait in there for a while. So you get so frustrated, you just buy something. Like that's how it feels too. And then sometimes I don't like all the stuff they have, like depending on the season.

• 41:47Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 41:47Drew Afualo?

So then I was like, I'm so picky and like, I don't need them brand, brand new.

• 41:52Speaker 01

I love a pre loved bag.

• 41:53Drew Afualo?

Yeah, I was like, I think shopping secondhand would be better for me and then I can find cooler things that aren't in the store. And so that's been like my new thing lately. I've been like getting some really cute shit for like way cheaper.

• 42:04Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 42:05Drew Afualo?

And it gets sent to my house. So I don't have to go anywhere.

• 42:07Speaker 01

I've been selling stuff on there. I've been buying stuff on there. Yes, like bags that I like impulse bought in like twenty eighteen or nineteen, but then I've like sat on a shelf for like five years.

• 42:16Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 42:16Speaker 01

  I'm doing that.

• 42:18Drew Afualo?

I've been trying to sell gowns and stuff that I've purchased and worn, but I know I'm not gonna wear again.

• 42:23Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 42:23Drew Afualo?

I've tried to, I've tried to sell them to the real real. One got rejected because it had a little bit of my spray tan on the inside.

• 42:29Speaker 01

I've had a couple of rejections. But I, I find like the clothes, I will resell it, but it's like when you know how much you paid for something and then it's like still in really good shape. It's like the resale value of clothes just sucks, but bags are good.

• 42:42Drew Afualo?

They did kind of, you're right though. They did kind of dick me a little bit on some of my gowns.

• 42:46Speaker 01

Bags and jewelry is really good, but not.

• 42:51Speaker 01

  Clothes.

• 42:51Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 42:52Speaker 01

  And not coats as much.

• 42:53Drew Afualo?

Yeah, but bags of tea, good to know.

• 42:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 42:56Drew Afualo?

  Bags and jewelry.

• 42:56Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 42:57Drew Afualo?

I I've been buying like pre-loved stuff on there and some new, some clothes and stuff too, which has been really nice.

• 43:03Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 43:03Drew Afualo?

  Loving.

• 43:04Speaker 01

I got this like Hermès bag that I had been asking my like, see, cause I got like, I got a guy at Hermès. But they just never have this like one bag that I've really been wanting.

• 43:12Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 43:12Speaker 01

And then I found it on Rebag.

• 43:14Drew Afualo?

  Ooh.

• 43:15Speaker 01

And it was like, and the only thing it didn't have was the box, but it had everything else. And it was like so much more affordable, whereas like a Birken or a Kelly is like more expensive on resale.

• 43:25Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 43:26Speaker 01

But all the other like not as well-known bags are cheaper on resale.

• 43:30Drew Afualo?

  Tea.

• 43:31Speaker 01

So if you're, if you're sales associate ever, you just like can't get it, it's like, look on Rebag for like a Rulli or like a Lindy or like a Pecaton.

• 43:39Drew Afualo?

Yeah, I'm very, I'm very like, I don't know, like whatever's about designer stuff. But when I really like it and I, I really wanna buy it, I'll like look into it.

• 43:49Speaker 01

I wish that I wasn't like this for Hermès and I never used to be, but then I stumbled upon Hermès talk and I got like all these people on my TikTok that started teaching me about like the lore of the leathers and like why this is like this and why that's like that. And one got me and then after that, and I will say this for Hermès. The quality of their stuff, like, like I have like a bag with me today.

• 44:11Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 44:11Speaker 01

I have taken that bag to like five continents, worn it every fucking day, beat it up, torn it down, shoved shit in it. And their qua- it just gets like better and better.

• 44:20Drew Afualo?

  I've heard that about them.

• 44:21Speaker 01

  It really is true.

• 44:22Drew Afualo?

At least, at least it's more of an investment piece than the other.

• 44:25Speaker 01

Well, even the ones that don't hold their value as well, like your Rulli, your Lindy, your Pecaton, like the, like a Constance, like wallet, like they're all just the, the quality of how well it's made really is you can beat it the fuck up.

• 44:36Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 44:36Speaker 01

Whereas like when I wear my like Rick Owens or Gucci or anything else, it's like in a similar expense meter for like a jacket or like a sweater or a jean. Wears out fucks up, but like Hermès really doesn't wear out or fuck up. It's just like, it's made, it's made on like a different level.

• 44:53Drew Afualo?

  Okay, tea.

• 44:54Speaker 01

  It really is.

• 44:55Drew Afualo?

Good to know. I feel like a big dumb dumb about stuff like that. But I'm learning.

• 45:00Speaker 01

I, the older I get, the more like I am kind of like naturally interested in it, but I, I understand how in this like time and space, it's like really like totally like maybe not the best and I understand that and that sucks. And I remember like before I made money, like reading a magazine, it would be like sweater eleven hundred, jeans seven hundred. I'd be like, that's like my fucking, double my rent, like get fucked.

• 45:20Drew Afualo?

  Same.

• 45:21Speaker 01

And, and but I, and I will say that like that's why like I'm down with Hermes though, because like it, I do think if you have the money, it is worth it. Whereas like other-

• 45:29Drew Afualo?

It's an investment too, like they grow.

• 45:30Speaker 01

Whereas designers, it's like something from H and M holds up the same as something from-

• 45:36Drew Afualo?

You're actually so right about that.

• 45:38Speaker 01

It, it is so true. So there's really no shame, I think, in buying fast fashion and it can be just as durable and just as amazing.

• 45:44Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 45:44Speaker 01

So I'm not like a designer queen. Like I love high low.

• 45:47Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, me too.

• 45:48Speaker 01

Yeah, I just want it to hold up if I'm gonna spend that money on it.

• 45:50Drew Afualo?

No, that's actually so true. And I think that's why I waited a really long time before I bought anything too, like designer for the first time. I didn't go crazy at the, out the gate, but I was very like, I grew up with no money at all and like, and had no money for a very long time until I started making money.

• 46:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 46:07Drew Afualo?

But I think that's a good thing. I think that honestly, that helps us like appreciate it more and spend it more wise. I even had a meeting with my business manager like a couple of weeks ago, talking about some other business stuff I'm looking into. And she was like, and she likes to do like health checks with me, like just like, hey, like we're looking good on taxes and whatever. And I'm like, okay, cool. And she was like, honestly, like you're like one of my least spendy clients. Like, she's like, you don't really buy anything. Like, like I'm not buying like a bunch of designer stuff. I'm not buying a bunch of cars. I'm not buying like anything super, super expensive, which is like, I think typical for influencers especially.

• 46:44Speaker 01

It's good emotional regulation on your end. You don't need to do it with impulsivity.

• 46:47Drew Afualo?

Right, but I also, I'm not an impulsive person, literally at all. I'll sit, I'll put something in a cart for weeks and think about it. I'm like, I need to think about that. And then I just think about it and I'm like, and then I forget. And then I'm like, oh wait, I think I wanted to buy something. And then when I put it back in there again, I go, I need to think about that. Like I just restart the clock every time.

• 47:06Speaker 01

I have a really good like safety system for this cuz like I don't know how to online shop. Like, so my stylist or like someone in my office like has to do it. Like I, like, I tried to order a bag. And I, I put in the wrong address, no last name. Like, I didn't know the login for the place where I got it from and then I had to like call my head of operations and I was like, I know that I ordered it cuz I got a confirmation email, but I don't know how to track it. I didn't put a last name and I think I put the wrong address. Like, what are we gonna do? And he did, he, he found it cuz he's fucking amazing.

• 47:36Drew Afualo?

I will say one thing that this job has, I've like, introduced into my world that I never thought I would ever need was a travel agent.

• 47:44Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 47:45Drew Afualo?

Girl, the way that that saves me so much time, stress and energy.

• 47:49Speaker 01

  Oh, my god.

• 47:49Drew Afualo?

I never in a million years thought I would need a travel agent.

• 47:52Speaker 01

I didn't either, but as like, but once I started doing comedy, like I've been, I've been in with the travel agents since like 2018. I could not do, I really could not, like they have got me out of so many pinches.

• 48:02Drew Afualo?

  No, mate, me too.

• 48:03Speaker 01

But you end up in weird situations, you're like, I'm stranded in Milwaukee and I need to get to Vegas. Or like, I need to get to like fucking Saskatchewan or something.

• 48:11Drew Afualo?

Yeah, I went to Penn State earlier this year to do like a college talk and it was, planes, trains and automobiles, first of all, to fucking get there, it was miserable. But I, like, we missed our first flight, had to get rerouted, then I had to fly into DC. And then a drive, like had to drive or for four hours up to Pennsylvania, wherever the fuck we were, I mean, not even remembering. And we had to drive four hours there because I missed my flight, which was into a small airport. It was a whole thing.

• 48:38Speaker 01

  The day.

• 48:38Drew Afualo?

Thankfully, I had someone to like, also Carrie, Carrie's my assistant, so she's also wonderful and helps with stuff like that.

• 48:45Speaker 01

  Big up Carrie.

• 48:45Drew Afualo?

I just never in a million years thought I would ever need something like that, but I was like, oh, perfect.

• 48:50Speaker 01

  We did it.

• 48:51Drew Afualo?

We did it, we made it.

• 48:53Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 48:53Drew Afualo?

I do have more fun facts about you. Okay, uh, this one says you used, they used to have a Funny or Die series called Gay of Thrones, where they would recap Game of Thrones episodes.

• 49:02Speaker 01

  It's true.

• 49:03Drew Afualo?

  I did know that.

• 49:03Speaker 01

  It's true.

• 49:04Drew Afualo?

  We loved that.

• 49:05Speaker 01

Hey, actually, the funniest thing I think about that story is, is that when the Emmys first started awarding, like essentially a web series.

• 49:12Drew Afualo?

  Yes.

• 49:13Speaker 01

It was like short form, or it was like, varieties, or like short form variety series or something. The first time that that got like announced, or like the first time the Television Academy made that a category, Gay of Thrones was one of the first nominees. It was like us, like Randy Rainbow, like Carpool Karaoke, which would go on to win.

• 49:30Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 49:31Speaker 01

Beat us every time we were nominated together. James? Which I just wanna say.

• 49:35Drew Afualo?

  Thanks a lot.

• 49:36Speaker 01

And not that I ever said it, and I'm so grateful for the Academy and our nominations, but I do just think there is something to be said for like, if on your diet, we had a budget of sixteen dollars. And we were up against NBC, who was getting budgets to like book fucking Celine Dion and stuff. And I used to like, we were able to make something with literally like, two cents and like willpower. And I'm just, when I do look back on that show though, it really is incredible like what we were able to make. And it was so cool and it was such a moment. I think without Gay of Thrones, I would have never booked Queer Eye and.

• 50:06Drew Afualo?

  Oh my gosh, how fun.

• 50:07Speaker 01

It's so true because the producers of Queer Eye like knew me from Gay of Thrones. And so they already kind of like liked me because they had saw that.

• 50:12Drew Afualo?

Yeah, how exciting. Were you a House of Dragon fan too? House of Dragon?

• 50:17Speaker 01

Um, yeah, we watched it. I think it's not as strong, obviously, as Game of Thrones.

• 50:22Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, because there's less storylines.

• 50:24Speaker 01

Yeah, and like the uncle fucking. I'm just like, can I just, can we just like back off so much fucking our uncles? Like, God.

• 50:33Drew Afualo?

You know what's so funny is like, I agree with you. And a very logical brain of mine, I do agree with you.

• 50:38Speaker 01

  But that was hot.

• 50:39Drew Afualo?

The world of the show, I was like, get them together immediately.

• 50:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 50:42Drew Afualo?

  Need them to exact revenge.

• 50:43Speaker 01

He was hot. I feel like that character was hot. Like that uncle like character was like, I get why she was triggered.

• 50:47Drew Afualo?

The only show that makes me.

• 50:49Speaker 01

  He was so sinewy.

• 50:50Drew Afualo?

Yeah, those, that might be the only show.

• 50:52Speaker 01

That Norwegian muscle. Like that, that.

• 50:55Drew Afualo?

He's got a strong forehead too.

• 50:56Speaker 01

  Yes, that Laplandish.

• 50:57Drew Afualo?

Matt Smith has that. Strong like Pro-Magnon forehead. Love that. Strong brow.

• 51:02Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 51:03Drew Afualo?

Love that. My man has one.

• 51:04Speaker 01

  Oh, yes.

• 51:05Drew Afualo?

Yeah, he's got a big Neanderthal.

• 51:06Speaker 01

I love a nice, strong brow and nose.

• 51:10Drew Afualo?

  Oh, me too.

• 51:10Speaker 01

My husband has like a really good, strong like Greek nose, I feel. He's not Greek, but it just reminds me like a Greek statue.

• 51:15Drew Afualo?

  Love that.

• 51:16Speaker 01

  It's like really pretty.

• 51:17Drew Afualo?

I know. My, my fiance has like a very strong forehead and hooded eyes.

• 51:21Speaker 01

Ah, I love good hooded eyes.

• 51:22Drew Afualo?

Me too. I love that. I think, look at us. We have so much in common.

• 51:27Speaker 01

We both have, we have really hot partners.

• 51:29Drew Afualo?

  That too.

• 51:29Speaker 01

  Which is exciting for us.

• 51:31Drew Afualo?

  I agree. I'm.

• 51:32Speaker 01

And we're really hot, so we really, yeah, we do have so much in common.

• 51:35Drew Afualo?

That makes a lot of sense then. Why they found us.

• 51:37Speaker 01

Good hair, we're both tall, pretty faces.

• 51:40Drew Afualo?

  And unbelievably charming.

• 51:41Speaker 01

  Yeah, and witty.

• 51:42Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, can you believe that?

• 51:43Speaker 01

Yeah, smarter than, smarter than most people give us credit for, I'd sigh.

• 51:46Drew Afualo?

Oh, yeah, absolutely. Recently, I had someone asked me, I did like a college talk too, and someone asked me like, what's something you wish people recognize about you more than what they do recognize for you, recognize you for now? And I was like, um, how smart I am. Like, easily, I would say how smart I am, and then, um, how kind I am, that too. I was like, those really aren't the two main ones that they think of when they think of me. Um, but I would say, yeah, smartness more than anything, intellect, need that.

• 52:16Speaker 01

Mine is my ass. Because it is way tighter and like more shapely than it's ever been.

• 52:23Drew Afualo?

  Tea.

• 52:24Speaker 01

And I just think because people aren't prepared or expecting that it's gonna be like, sitting where it is or filling out these jeans the way that it has been. I just feel like people, other than my husband, who does, but I have to prompt him kind of how I had to do with you with the sweater. I want these fucking hoes to start saying like, that JVN does, it's like, it's like little, but it's there.

• 52:44Drew Afualo?

  That's true.

• 52:45Speaker 01

And I'm sick of these hoes not saying that.

• 52:47Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, they need to recognize.

• 52:49Speaker 01

Cause I had a Tina Belcher ass my whole fucking life, it was just like a convex board. And it is not as convex.

• 52:56Drew Afualo?

  No, it is not.

• 52:57Speaker 01

And I want people to know.

• 52:58Drew Afualo?

You, you need them to know, nice, right and tight. Yeah, there you go, pop it a little.

• 53:41Drew Afualo?

  Perfect. Perfect.

• 53:43Speaker 01

It's pretty right. You really see it.

• 53:45Drew Afualo?

Yeah. I know the, the material in your skirt is really like emphasizing, I would say.

• 53:50Speaker 01

  Oh my god.

• 53:50Drew Afualo?

  A little tooch.

• 53:51Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 53:51Drew Afualo?

  Yes.

• 53:52Speaker 01

What other, is there anything in there about me that I don't know?

• 53:55Drew Afualo?

Let me see, that you don't know?

• 53:57Speaker 01

  Something she knows.

• 53:58Drew Afualo?

It says, "For Halloween in second grade, you dressed up as the judge on the OJ Simpson trial."

• 54:03Speaker 01

Yeah, which is kind of controversial. Um, this is like pre-Rachel Dolezal, pre-transracial. I did just see that she did detransition back to being fully white woman on Twitter, which was... I was like, wow, queen. But yeah, I, I did dress up as Judge Ito in second grade, who was an Asian-American man.

• 54:21Drew Afualo?

Uh, I do think he passed away, but I didn't know, and I didn't do anything like controversial with my face shape. No, you just have a beard.

• 54:27Speaker 01

I just drew on a beard.

• 54:28Drew Afualo?

Yeah, you just have a beard and glasses.

• 54:29Speaker 01

And I also was wearing my Sunday School like acolyte outfit to, for my judge robe.

• 54:34Drew Afualo?

That is a very interesting choice. Why that?

• 54:37Speaker 01

Because I was fascinated with that trial. I was, I was sat for that trial. I was seven and I just... I was very, I didn't understand racism or anything like that when I was six or seven, but I... I was very not Team OJ. I was very like, feeling like he probably did it, and I was...

• 54:55Drew Afualo?

Well, I mean, because he did, so I guess even as a child, you know, you have that wit about you.

• 55:00Speaker 01

And I was like, ah, now here's a, this is actually a really interesting six degrees of separation. Well, not that interesting, but Nicole's sister went on this like speaking tour after the trial, and it was like a domestic like abuse like awareness speaking tour. I think she'd written a book. And she came to my hometown, and she had this speech in like the Holiday Inn like downtown. And I went, and I was like eight, and I was with my mom. Well, I got up to go to the bathroom, and I couldn't, I didn't know what emergency exit meant. So I went out this emergency exit in this ballroom, and I set off this like emergency exit in the middle of her talk, and got this like whole fucking hotel room, or like hotel like ball space evacuated.

• 55:37Drew Afualo?

  Man.

• 55:38Speaker 01

And Nicole Brown Simpson's sister was talking about it in like 1995 in my hometown. I always felt really fucking bad about that.

• 55:47Drew Afualo?

I love when parents support their children's very niche special interests.

• 55:51Speaker 01

Well, everyone in our hometown went, this is like a huge deal.

• 55:55Drew Afualo?

No, I know. My, my parents have told me that before. I was born in ninety-five, so.

• 55:59Speaker 01

  What a year.

• 56:01Drew Afualo?

So, big year, you know, big year. But I think for me, like, I, I also had very special interests as a child like that, that were fostered by my parents. Like, my parents were fostering my whimsy, even though it could have been. Yeah, it could have been concerning, but I don't think it was. Like, I think my parents were like, well, it's not murdering anyone, so I guess it's fine.

• 56:20Speaker 01

  What was your whimsy?

• 56:22Drew Afualo?

Well, I, I went through really big phases. So, like, one of them that I went through was the Titanic.

• 56:26Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 56:27Drew Afualo?

I was like obsessed with it in a way that like, I was almost studying it as if one day someone was gonna ask me to sail a cruise ship like that. Like, someone was one day gonna ask me to pioneer it. So, like, I was studying it like, like tape, like footage.

• 56:42Speaker 01

  You gotta avoid the iceberg.

• 56:43Drew Afualo?

Yeah, and I, like, I was going to the library and checking out books on the Titanic. And like, my mom was, I think I was in like, fourth grade, fourth or fifth grade, and my mom was buying me books on the Titanic, like, for kids.

• 56:55Speaker 01

The movie Anastasia did that to me for the Russian royalty.

• 56:58Drew Afualo?

  Loved the Romanov family, same.

• 57:00Speaker 01

I went deep on that, like, like, library. I, I like, I mean, and I was like, well, actually, if any of them would have survived, it would have been Tatiana, not Anastasia, because all the skeletons that they found actually matched up with Anastasia's. But Tatiana's the one that could have survived.

• 57:14Drew Afualo?

I also had an obsession with the Romanov family. I had obsessions with quite a few people throughout, like, I would say European monarchy, because like, I was King George the Third once, for like, a wax museum, which like, was so concerning to my teacher at the time, because you were supposed to pick someone you admire. And I did not admire him, but I did explain to her that I thought he was fascinating, because he's one of the worst British monarchs in history. And like, just to be the one, like, one of them after the hundreds they've had, is just crazy to me.

• 57:44Speaker 01

Girl, you with your like. Anti like colonization like ass being like in third grade like you know I'm gonna pick George.

• 57:54Drew Afualo?

Well, you know, you know why though?

• 57:56Speaker 01

  Third.

• 57:56Drew Afualo?

I've like tried to unpack it and I really do think it's because the hubris of white people was fascinating.

• 58:02Speaker 01

  You were clocking it early.

• 58:03Drew Afualo?

  Yes.

• 58:04Speaker 01

  No, I think that's amazing.

• 58:05Drew Afualo?

And I literally when I wrote, when I wrote the speech, I I started it with I'm one of the worst English monarchs in British monarchy history. And I like said that in my speech and like I talked about how terrible of a leader I was, why I was so awful. I like explained all of that and I think that's why my teacher let me do it because it wasn't in a way that was like, he was the best like.

• 58:25Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 58:26Drew Afualo?

I just like really was obsessed with white men specifically feeling so close to God that they could do awful things. And like with no repercussion like.

• 58:35Speaker 01

  Talk that fucking tea.

• 58:36Drew Afualo?

I really did think that I was like, I find this fascinating, like my Titanic thing. I was like telling uh my cousin this the other day because I was telling him when I watched the movie Titanic. I as a child, I was like genuinely disappointed because I was like they didn't even talk about the boat like. No one's talking about the captain or the crew or the classism that's being on board like I remember genuinely being surprised. I was like, they didn't even talk about that stuff like they didn't even cover it and I even.

• 59:04Speaker 01

They did without doing it. They like did like inexplicably.

• 59:07Drew Afualo?

And I asked, I asked my mom, I was like, is that story true? Like the story of Jack and Rose? And my mom was like, no. And then I go, what's the point of this movie?

• 59:18Speaker 01

  You're gonna need a documentary.

• 59:20Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, I'm thinking documentary.

• 59:21Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 59:22Drew Afualo?

I'm thinking that, but you know, whatever. What do I know?

• 59:25Speaker 01

Now, what the fuck do I know?

• 59:26Drew Afualo?

Yeah, I was like so like, this movie's alright. I remember thinking that younger, but that's just because I was like such a know it all too. I think that was another reason I loved knowing more things than the average person.

• 59:37Speaker 01

I love that we're both just like curious queens.

• 59:39Drew Afualo?

Yes, that's why like I was so endlessly curious about stuff like that. I did have another stint about that, but this was when I was like. My now age.

• 59:48Speaker 01

  This was like last year.

• 59:49Drew Afualo?

This was like, yeah, a couple of years ago when the Elvis movie came out with Austin Butler.

• 59:53Speaker 01

  Ah.

• 59:53Drew Afualo?

I got really obsessed with Elvis's eating habits. Like, I was doing a lot of research about that. Because he ate like an asshole, like he ate bad.

• 1:00:01Speaker 01

Yeah, I think I've read about some of these.

• 1:00:03Drew Afualo?

But like, I was looking up like cookbooks that people made based off his like food and I was looking up the research and I was looking up the doctor's like findings after they like exhumed his body and shit. Cause he had like six months worth of shit still like blocked up inside him because he never drank water. And like never eat vegetables. So he was just eating like, like an asshole for years, for so long. And I was just so hyper fixated on it, like I could not stop reading stuff about it. To the point where my uncle actually got me a book on Elvis's life and there's like a pretty large chapter about the eating.

• 1:00:35Speaker 01

  Ah.

• 1:00:36Drew Afualo?

And I read it, because I was so interested.

• 1:00:38Speaker 01

My neurodivergence is making me do this thing where when you talk about something, I have to talk about something similar.

• 1:00:43Drew Afualo?

  Please do.

• 1:00:43Speaker 01

So when you were about nine.

• 1:00:46Drew Afualo?

  Okay.

• 1:00:47Speaker 01

I, it was two thousand and four.

• 1:00:49Drew Afualo?

  Okay.

• 1:00:49Speaker 01

And I think one thing that your generation needs to know more that you don't know is that Elvis had this daughter named Lisa Marie Presley. And she, she just passed away like not that long ago, but in the early two thousands, she had this singing career. And she was like thirty five when she did it. So she's like a little older than like these other pop divas. And she had this song called Lights Down. And it was like, someone turn the lights off down in Memphis. It's such a good song. The next line of it is, that's where my family's dead, or she's like, that's where my family's dead and gone. It's like this really like amazing, like kind of intergenerational, like haunting anthem about like empowerment and like how hard it is for her to go back home. And it was this massive like single.

• 1:01:34Speaker 01

And then her recording career like didn't really catch off after that, but it was like a huge one hit wonder. Like it was very much like number one, like VH1 Top Ten Countdown.

• 1:01:43Drew Afualo?

  Okay.

• 1:01:43Speaker 01

So in two thousand and four, I told my mom that I was going to my friend's house. I just got my driver's license. Actually, I didn't have my driver's license. I had my driver's permit and you could drive with someone who's over twenty one. And there was this girl who was in my older brother's grade. And we wanted to go see Lisa Marie Presley at the Illinois State Fair, but that was in Springfield, which was like two hours away.

• 1:02:01Drew Afualo?

  Okay.

• 1:02:01Speaker 01

So I was like, mom, like me and Nikki, like Nikki's just gonna like, I'm gonna spend the night at Nikki's house. And I'm just gonna drive the car over there, but she's gonna be with me and she's like twenty two, so that's fine. Bitch, we stole my mom's car, went to Springfield, watched Lisa Marie Presley at the Illinois State Fair, then lost the car at a parking lot, like three, because it was like these big parking lot places, lost the fucking car, and then my mom called me that night and she was like, okay, well, I need to use a car, so why don't you just like drive home and then I can like drive you and Nikki back? And I was like, oh, no, we can't, because we're, and you just like had to make up all these lies, and I think this might be how my mom finds out that we did steal the car and go to Springfield, if she's listening to this podcast.

• 1:02:41Drew Afualo?

Well, I know your mom's a huge fan of the pod.

• 1:02:42Speaker 01

But she was really good, like Lisa Marie Presley in that concert was amazing at the Illinois State Fair.

• 1:02:46Drew Afualo?

Okay, T, you have had such niche interests from such a young age.

• 1:02:50Speaker 01

And I love that they're kind of like aligned.

• 1:02:52Drew Afualo?

Yeah, they are. They're very on-brand, honestly.

• 1:02:55Speaker 01

Speaking of white people being insane, though, I saw this like white TikTok preacher, like televangelist, like on my feed the other day, when he was saying, I grew up in like a really like churchy, like very conservative like culture and area. And I remember we, my family went to this church this one time and saw this pastor that was talking much like this guy, and he was like, it's spiritual warfare everywhere, and there are demons that are flying into your mouth from music videos and social media, and the enemy is pushing you at all times with tits and temptation, and it's demons, and I was like, goddamn. So these people literally imagine demons and angels. Oh, he was also saying, he was also saying that like there's angels and demons like amongst us, and angels won't try to fuck you, but demons will try to fuck you.

• 1:03:37Speaker 01

He said that like demons will use spiritual warfare to like try to fuck you, but angels are amongst us, but they don't try to fuck you, and he was dead serious, like talking out this from like a Christian, like evangelical, like spiritual warfare, like Trumpy place. And I was like, wait, so these people literally believe that angels and demons are flying through music videos and flying through our fucking phones and shit, and like going into people's bodies and trying to fuck them, but don't believe that like trans people can exist, and don't believe that some cultures had a third gender that was like legit and normal, and like not this like weird, it's like the shit that people can believe in evangelicalism, but then can't believe science, or can't believe history, or can't believe these, it just blows my fucking mind, like white people, like evangelical white people, especially in the American South. Wow.

• 1:04:21Drew Afualo?

I'm, I, I'm not even kidding, like, that's what I think truly, like, fascinated me about things like that. Cause a lot of the things I would hyper fixate on too, like, would lead to tragedy in some grand regard, like.

• 1:04:33Speaker 01

  Look at their Romanoffs.

• 1:04:35Drew Afualo?

Right, like, exactly, so, and they have these like.

• 1:04:37Speaker 01

  And Titanic.

• 1:04:38Drew Afualo?

Well, and even like the oligarchy, like, as a whole in, in the UK, like Parliament, all this, the way that their system works and how they just kind of like, they're like, this is the guy, he's the guy now, so he's gonna tell you what you need to be doing, this is the guy. I find that insane, like, I just find that general concept in a very like, black and white, like, bare bones thing, insane, like, why am I listening to this one fucking family, like, for generations and all of them are awful, like, they just so all, oh, just so happen to all be fucking awful, like, the British monarchy is responsible for almost all of the world's problems, so, like, currently?

• 1:05:15Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:05:16Drew Afualo?

So I think that's what would fascinate me about that was infatuation, like, it was like people's just willingness to believe, like, what someone just fucking tells them, like, and I think, I, I've even talked about that with my sister in regards to like the Pope and like Catholicism. Because I find Catholicism so interesting, because it's like, this is the guy. He's the guy, he talks to the big guy, and you listen to him, and then people cry when, when they pick the guy, like, I, I find that fascinating, I really do.

• 1:05:44Speaker 01

Did you see that movie, what was that movie last year that got, that like got nominated?

• 1:05:47Drew Afualo?

  Conclave?

• 1:05:47Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:05:48Drew Afualo?

I have not seen Conclave, no.

• 1:05:49Speaker 01

  Girl.

• 1:05:50Drew Afualo?

I heard it was fire, though.

• 1:05:51Speaker 01

  Have to watch it.

• 1:05:53Drew Afualo?

  I, I find it fascinating.

• 1:05:54Speaker 01

When are you flying back from New York?

• 1:05:55Drew Afualo?

  Wednesday.

• 1:05:56Speaker 01

Should you watch it on the plane?

• 1:05:57Drew Afualo?

  Okay, tea.

• 1:05:58Speaker 01

I'm gonna text you to remind you.

• 1:05:59Drew Afualo?

  Okay, who's tea?

• 1:06:00Speaker 01

Or, like, are you going out tonight?

• 1:06:01Drew Afualo?

  I don't know, I don't think so.

• 1:06:02Speaker 01

Honestly, I think you and your fiance should fucking watch it.

• 1:06:05Drew Afualo?

  Okay, tea.

• 1:06:05Speaker 01

Like, have your fiance take his shirt off, and you take your shirt off, and, and just cuddle and fucking watch Conclave.

• 1:06:10Drew Afualo?

Sit topless in the bed, and watch Conclave.

• 1:06:11Speaker 01

If I was you, that's what the fuck I would be doing, because it is so, it is.

• 1:06:16Drew Afualo?

Sounds like a night well spent.

• 1:06:17Speaker 01

It is so fucking good, and if you are triggered by like, people shit.

• 1:06:21Drew Afualo?

  Yes.

• 1:06:22Speaker 01

  Girl.

• 1:06:23Drew Afualo?

That's why I said the hubris of man is fascinating to me.

• 1:06:26Speaker 01

Drew, not to be a bitch, I. Please.

• 1:06:29Drew Afualo?

  Okay, well.

• 1:06:30Speaker 01

  Watch it.

• 1:06:31Drew Afualo?

  I will.

• 1:06:31Speaker 01

And then DM me or text me and be like, you are so right. You know me so fucking good. This is like so amazing. The way that you were going to be like so fucking taken with it. I don't want to over promise, but just based off of like the Venn diagram of our like niche interests. And if your fiance goes down on you during it, forget it.

• 1:06:50Drew Afualo?

Y'all ever get eaten out during Conclave?

• 1:06:51Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:06:52Drew Afualo?

  Let me know.

• 1:06:53Speaker 01

She's about to make it to be like taken to this whole other place.

• 1:06:57Drew Afualo?

  Sounds like a date.

• 1:06:58Speaker 01

It's not a very sexy movie, to be honest. I don't know like what part he's gonna do it on. Cause you might be like, babe, this isn't the time.

• 1:07:04Drew Afualo?

I'm like, nah, not right now.

• 1:07:05Speaker 01

Maybe he could eat you out and then you could watch Conclave.

• 1:07:09Drew Afualo?

  And then we watch Conclave.

• 1:07:10Speaker 01

Or, yeah, cause after it's my, yeah.

• 1:07:12Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 1:07:13Speaker 01

  Although.

• 1:07:15Drew Afualo?

I don't know. I'll be in Porcina los Dos.

• 1:07:17Speaker 01

Yeah, it's why not have both.

• 1:07:19Drew Afualo?

Yeah, start during, then restart it after.

• 1:07:22Speaker 01

Ooh, save it. Yeah, save it for later.

• 1:07:26Drew Afualo?

That reminds me, but not really. Have you watched the new Frankenstein?

• 1:07:28Speaker 01

  No.

• 1:07:29Drew Afualo?

  You should watch it.

• 1:07:30Speaker 01

  Do you loved it?

• 1:07:31Drew Afualo?

I loved it. It was a fun watch for me.

• 1:07:33Speaker 01

And it's just a movie, right?

• 1:07:34Drew Afualo?

  Yeah.

• 1:07:34Speaker 01

  I should do it.

• 1:07:35Drew Afualo?

  It's long.

• 1:07:35Speaker 01

  I like Jacob Elordi.

• 1:07:36Drew Afualo?

Yeah, I would, I would like park. Like if you're like gonna watch it, I'd be like planned to be here for a while. Cause it's a long movie. But you get to watch it at home, so that's nice.

• 1:07:44Speaker 01

I got invited to this birthday party tonight, but only like two days ago, which makes me feel like they didn't think about me in the first place. And then after not getting invited to Wicked, I was like, maybe I should just go and like not be like choosy about it. But I already had dinner plans. And so then there's like this dancing thing after the birthday dinner party and they were like, and I'm just like, it's, I just don't know if I have it in me to fucking do it. And so I think, I think I might just go to dinner and then watch Frankenstein afterwards.

• 1:08:11Drew Afualo?

  I love that.

• 1:08:12Speaker 01

  I'm just, I'm just, I can't.

• 1:08:13Drew Afualo?

You have a date with Frankenstein, I have a date with Conclave.

• 1:08:15Speaker 01

Yeah, I want, I want to.

• 1:08:17Drew Afualo?

Yeah. To go to the party?

• 1:08:19Speaker 01

Yeah, I like, I, the theory of it sounds great, but the truth is, is that I'm 38 and it's Tuesday. And I gotta go on tour this weekend and I gotta do my best in Richmond and Boston. And I gotta like, I gotta fucking prioritize. And I don't think I can go out tonight.

• 1:08:31Drew Afualo?

You gotta go in the crate. That's what I call it.

• 1:08:33Speaker 01

Oh, yeah, I gotta go in the crate.

• 1:08:34Drew Afualo?

I gotta go in the crate and I gotta put the blanket over it and no one, and it's nighttime for me. I gotta go to bed.

• 1:08:39Speaker 01

That's what I have to do.

• 1:08:40Drew Afualo?

  Yeah, you have to.

• 1:08:41Speaker 01

  And that's okay.

• 1:08:41Drew Afualo?

That's okay. And I would feel the same way about a last minute invite.

• 1:08:45Speaker 01

But it is why I don't have that many friends. And I do think it's like why celebrities like ghost me as friends a lot because like every time they invite me in places, I'm like,

• 1:08:55Drew Afualo?

  In theory, I would love.

• 1:08:56Speaker 01

Yes, and I'm so grateful for the invite.

• 1:08:59Drew Afualo?

  I feel that, though.

• 1:09:00Speaker 01

  And I wanna be invited.

• 1:09:01Drew Afualo?

I feel that. I feel that so hard, honestly.

• 1:09:03Speaker 01

It's making me wonder if I need to switch to sativas. I'm like, is my indica making me too tired? Is this why I don't wanna go out? Is this why I have social anxiety?

• 1:09:10Drew Afualo?

Honestly, sativa makes me feel so, like, different. Like, in a not as enjoyable way. I like being, but I know what you mean. Like, cuz the indica makes you feel like a dart, like elephant dart. Like, you're like, ugh. Like, but sativa is more of a workable high or whatever they say.

• 1:09:27Speaker 01

My girlfriend is a hardcore sativa girl, but I'm a hardcore indica girl. And I went to her house the other day, and we smoked at like nine in the morning. And then I was like, I, the way that I ravenously cleaned her house for two and a half hours. Like, I became obsessed with, like, cleaning the dustboards, like, everything. And then I was like, damn, maybe I should. Cuz the reason I got off sativas is cuz I felt like they made me really anxious.

• 1:09:49Drew Afualo?

  I agree with that.

• 1:09:50Speaker 01

  And indicas don't.

• 1:09:51Drew Afualo?

It made me feel like my brain was going a little bit cuckoo.

• 1:09:53Speaker 01

Paranoid, everyone hates me, I don't wanna stop talking.

• 1:09:55Drew Afualo?

  Yes.

• 1:09:55Speaker 01

And so then I switched to indica, and I feel like that went away.

• 1:09:58Drew Afualo?

  Right.

• 1:09:58Speaker 01

But then this one little dipping my toe into the sativa blunt a few weeks ago. Look, I, I've never cleaned that hard in my life.

• 1:10:04Drew Afualo?

Honestly, you're honestly onto something. Because one time, I, I think it was a, like, a drink, and it was like a sativa drink. And the girl that we got it from, like, at the dispensary, she was like, "This is great if you need to get something done." And I was like, "Oh, really?" She's like, "Yeah, like, when I need to, like, really lock in and do something, I drink this thing." And I was like, "Okay." And she goes, "And if you mix it with, like, an energy drink, it's even better."

• 1:10:26Speaker 01

  Oh, I love that. It's like a, it's like a starter speedball.

• 1:10:28Drew Afualo?

Yes, and I was like, "Okay." So then I, I went home, and I did that, and I cleaned my entire closet. I like, cuz I put headphones on, too. Oh, my gosh, I felt like I reached a real flow state.

• 1:10:39Speaker 01

The world, just like so in there.

• 1:10:42Drew Afualo?

I felt like I was moving a million miles an hour. I was like, going at, I was going to town in that closet.

• 1:10:48Speaker 01

My favorite auntie got into my refrigerator and drank one of those weed drinks. And then I found her in the guest bedroom, in like, the shape of like, when someone gets murdered and they draw like the outline of someone. She was like face down, and her shoes were still on. Um, and I was like, "Auntie, auntie." Like, and she literally slept for two days.

• 1:11:09Speaker 01

Like I was so excited to see her and like I and I didn't tell her to drink it but it incapacitated her and she did not she I I had to check her to make sure she wasn't dead.

• 1:11:16Drew Afualo?

  You have to make sure.

• 1:11:17Speaker 01

I moved her head to the side so she could breathe and that was yeah she was out.

• 1:11:20Drew Afualo?

I do wanna say before we wrap, I do wanna tell this story because when I was on your show last, when I was last time I was in New York.

• 1:11:26Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:11:26Drew Afualo?

Or like actually it was a few times before that, um you were like, let's go smoke after. So we went downstairs to go smoke after. And like we were smoking king, right? King down, you and I, just gabbing. And as we were smoking, I hit the, I hit your, your J at one point. And I had to cough so bad and I, I was literally telling those after we left, we parted ways. I was like, while you were like, while you were talking to me and I remember at one point I was like, I'm gonna freak out because I have to cough so loud, but I don't wanna be rude. And then you were like, I remember you looking at me, you go, are you okay? And then I go,

• 1:12:02Speaker 01

Drew, if you ever need to dislodge a loogie or like cough it out in front of me, like I am so pro that, you could never gross me out, I love.

• 1:12:09Drew Afualo?

I knew you would, but it was more so that I was gonna cough for twenty minutes and I didn't.

• 1:12:12Speaker 01

You're just like trying to let me like stop talking?

• 1:12:14Drew Afualo?

Well, no, you know how it's one of those where it's like, oh my god, I'm so annoying, I can't stop coughing. That's how I felt.

• 1:12:19Speaker 01

I get like my bi, I call it my bronchitis. It's my biannual bronchitis.

• 1:12:23Drew Afualo?

And I've told that story, but I didn't say who it was. I was like, I was smoking with my friend. And I was like, and you know what's funny is you were, you were sharing tea with me bitch. So I was like, we were gabbing about it. Yeah, but then when I was like,

• 1:12:39Drew Afualo?

like looking at you, because I was like, this is the craziest story I've ever heard and I can't even emote to it because I'm gonna pass out.

• 1:12:45Speaker 01

  I'm sorry, queen.

• 1:12:47Drew Afualo?

No, I literally was like, when I walked back over to my family, we were like, bye, bye, bye. And we walked away, uh, my fiance was like, how was it? I was like, bro, it was fucking tar. I literally was like,

• 1:12:59Speaker 01

  Sorry.

• 1:13:00Drew Afualo?

No, it was so good. I was high for a couple hours. After that, I was like.

• 1:13:03Speaker 01

I think I need to start smoking different weed. I got high with this girl that I met at a party the other day and she literally just like passed out in the middle, like, she was like, nice to meet you. She's passed out in my arms, like on the side of the street and I had to like get her a Pepsi and like sit with her. And she was like, sorry, I did the hair for like three fashion shows today and I didn't eat. And then I drank a bunch of alcohol, then I got high with you and I was like, oh, that'll do it. Crossfaded, yeah. But I was like, dear, my husband was like, I think we need to get like less strong joints for when you smoke with strangers.

• 1:13:29Drew Afualo?

God damn, when I went down my... I felt like...

• 1:13:32Speaker 01

  She's got the high tolerance.

• 1:13:33Drew Afualo?

I honestly, so do I, though. That's why I felt like, I just felt like I hit it like a newbie.

• 1:13:38Speaker 01

Just hit it. No, wrong pipe. Wait, thank you for having me on. I love you so much.

• 1:13:41Drew Afualo?

Oh, thank you so much for coming back. I love you. I'm obsessed with you. You're the best. And honestly, I don't think this is necessary, but if anyone, if like two people haven't ever seen you and don't know where to find you, where can they find you?

• 1:13:51Speaker 01
