Support for the show comes from Jira by Atlassian. AI is only as useful as the context it has to work from. But when that context is scattered across tools, threads, and DMs, that means your team and your AI agents end up flying blind. That's the problem that Jira solves. What's the goal tied to your project? What got decided last week in Slack? Atlassian's teamwork graph pulls all these pieces together, from Jira, Confluence, Slack, GitHub, and more. So, nothing falls through the cracks. With Jira, you can actually share that context with the AI agents you already use, like Claude, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot, assign them work directly, or connect your agents through MCP. Spend less time digging through endless links and DMs, less time chasing down what got decided and by who, and more time actually shipping. Learn more at jira.com.

That's J-I-R-A dot com. I think I'm gonna watch this movie.

• 1:25Andrew Manganelli?

  What? What?

• 1:29Andrew Manganelli?

What's so funny? What was the thought process that made you want to watch this movie? Because I've never heard you say those words. You always like end up watching a movie.

• 1:36Speaker 01

I Googled it to see what the budget was. I pulled up the Wikipedia. I saw the budget. I saw that the score was by Hans Zimmer. And I saw the trailer or the poster again. And it looks cool. And I think I want to watch this movie.

• 1:47Andrew Manganelli?

So, you were sold by Hans Zimmer?

• 1:49David Imel?

The whole reason, the whole reason that statement was really funny was...

• 1:53Speaker 01

Everybody started laughing. I was gonna watch that funny movie.

• 2:01Speaker 01

What is up people of the internet? Welcome back to another episode of the Waveform Podcast. We're your hosts, I'm Marquez.

• 2:06David Imel?

And I'm David. And I'm Ellis. What?

• 2:09Speaker 01

Yeah, so Ellis, first of all, welcome to the side of the board. Good to have you. Video watchers have now already figured out that that means Andrew's not here. Adam is holding it down over there, which means we'll have some surrogate Andrew opinions, but I will, I will bring them to you.

• 2:26David Imel?

I could try to be Andrew, like.

• 2:28Speaker 01

Well, I know, he, he gave me some things that he wanted to be on the pod, so.

• 2:32Andrew Manganelli?

I don't think I can name all the planets.

• 2:33David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 2:34Speaker 01

So Andrew's here in spirit. But don't worry, we still have some Apple rumors, some Tesla talk, robotaxi stuff, and also a whole bunch of nothing.

• 2:42David Imel?

  That's right.

• 2:43Speaker 01

  To talk about.

• 2:43David Imel?

  A lot of nothing.

• 2:44Speaker 03

But not the kind of nothing you think that the real nothing, the something nothing, the nothing that is a thing.

• 2:50Speaker 01

  The thing, yes.

• 2:51David Imel?

It is a couple of things.

• 2:52Speaker 03

You can make calls on it?

• 2:54Speaker 01

  One of them.

• 2:55David Imel?

  Arguably.

• 2:55Speaker 03

  Both of them.

• 2:56Speaker 01

Both of them, yeah, kind of.

• 2:57David Imel?

  Technically.

• 2:57Speaker 01

By proxy. It's gonna be a good time. But first, pour one out for another Google product. It's a bit of a running theme where every time Google retires a product, we've recognized it on the podcast, sometimes involuntarily, but this time, Google Keep on the Apple Watch. There's no more.

• 3:18David Imel?

Why would they do this to me?

• 3:19Speaker 03

  What?

• 3:20David Imel?

  I, to me specifically.

• 3:21Speaker 03

  You're.

• 3:22Speaker 01

Did you use Google Keep on the Apple Watch?

• 3:25David Imel?

So what, man? Okay, every time they kill a thing that Google Keep is related to, it's one more step out the door for Google Keep.

• 3:33Speaker 01

  This is true.

• 3:34David Imel?

And they keep integrating Google Keep into Google Tasks and then that into Calendar. But I have to say, when Google Keep got kicked off the Apple Watch, guess what got added to the Apple Watch?

• 3:44Speaker 01

  What is that?

• 3:45David Imel?

Google Calendar. They just added it, they just added a Google Calendar, Apple Watch app. Why would they do this? I have no idea. Why would they kill Keep and add Calendar?

• 3:54Speaker 01

So maybe they just, the person who's in charge of Google stuff on the Apple Watch, like, woke up and was like, wait a minute, I should probably add Google Calendar, but also Keep.

• 4:03David Imel?

My conspiracy theory, which is not gonna come true. Unless I will it into existence, which I hope I don't, is that they're going to kill keep, but then like integrate keeps features in the calendar.

• 4:14Speaker 03

  What?

• 4:14Speaker 01

  In a calendar?

• 4:15Speaker 03

  In a calendar?

• 4:16Speaker 01

  Why not?

• 4:16Speaker 03

  Into tasks?

• 4:17Speaker 04

  Oh, I was gonna say.

• 4:18David Imel?

Yeah, but tasks is like part of calendar now, too.

• 4:20Speaker 01

Yeah, well, tasks is things you do. Calendar is.

• 4:24Speaker 03

  Things you have to do.

• 4:26Speaker 01

No. Places you are and things you do.

• 4:28David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 4:29Speaker 01

But then keep is things you need to remember.

• 4:31Speaker 03

  Quick notes.

• 4:32Speaker 01

  No, yeah, quick notes, basically.

• 4:34Speaker 03

Is that what keep is for?

• 4:35Speaker 01

Yeah, it's like the Apple Notes app. It's notes.

• 4:36Speaker 04

Yeah, it's so much less powerful and I yell all the time on the internet about it.

• 4:40Speaker 03

Then why is it? When you put an image in a Google Doc, it does not back it up on Google Drive anywhere. It automatically uploads it to Google Keep.

• 4:50Speaker 04

Mm hmm. And it's very annoying.

• 4:52Speaker 03

They what? Yes, when you drop an image, so if you drop an image into a Google Doc and you think, oh, this is great. My document has an image now.

• 4:58Speaker 04

Yeah, the producer will easily be able to download this image.

• 5:00Speaker 03

And then the producer goes, that's weird. I can't right click and download this image from a Google Doc. Oh, but I can view it in its Google Keep location. And then you go to Google Keep and guess what? Google Keep also does not have.

• 5:12Speaker 01

  A backup?

• 5:12Speaker 03

  A download button.

• 5:14Speaker 01

  Weird.

• 5:14Speaker 03

  It is so infuriating.

• 5:16Speaker 04

Then you have to right click it and open it in a new tab and then you can download it.

• 5:19Speaker 03

For that reason, thank you, other producer. For that reason, I literally cannot wait to hiss on Google Keep's grave. I swear. I am so excited for this service to get discontinued.

• 5:32Speaker 04

They just need to make it better.

• 5:33Speaker 03

  We're not friends anymore.

• 5:33Speaker 04

  It's a good service.

• 5:34Speaker 03

  It's not.

• 5:35David Imel?

There's no download option, but there is a save to keep option.

• 5:38Speaker 04

Yeah, and then that opens up in your sidebar in Google Calendar. And then you can open it up in a new tab.

• 5:43Speaker 01

The only thing that I use keep for is when you save. That's actually literally one thing, when you ask Google Home to add something to the shopping list, slash grocery list. It makes a new item in a Google Keep.

• 5:56Speaker 01

Item that is a grocery list, not Google tasks.

• 5:58David Imel?

See, this is my thing. There's a lot of overlap here.

• 6:02Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 6:02David Imel?

  And I think

• 6:03Speaker 01

Going grocery shopping is a task. It could easily be a task.

• 6:07David Imel?

Well, going grocery shopping, but what about the things you need to shop for?

• 6:10Speaker 01

Those should be items underneath the task.

• 6:13David Imel?

Which is what I do in Google Keep with the checkboxes.

• 6:15Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 6:16Speaker 04

Yeah, but if you're going to multiple shops and you want to have like a header that breaks up the checklist, you know, like, oh, at Costco, I gotta get this. At my local grocery store, I gotta get this. At the farmer's market, I gotta get this. You cannot do that in Google Keep. They're all checkboxes. You can't just like break it in the middle.

• 6:31Speaker 01

You gotta make multiple keep notes.

• 6:33Speaker 04

  Exactly.

• 6:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 6:34David Imel?

  Well, yeah.

• 6:35Speaker 04

  Very annoying.

• 6:35David Imel?

Okay, but I still think that Google Keep is more useful on the Apple Watch than Google Calendar is. Google Calendar is like a whole, a giant calendar.

• 6:43Speaker 03

Yeah, I think that's who you're coming from.

• 6:44David Imel?

It's a lot. It's big. It's like, you can't look at your whole month on your little wrist thing.

• 6:48Speaker 04

You can see what's coming up next, though.

• 6:49Speaker 01

  It's probably a weekly view.

• 6:50David Imel?

Yeah, but Google Keep, you got little checkboxes and you can be, me, me, me, me, me. When you're going grocery shopping, boom, boom, boom.

• 6:56Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 6:56Speaker 01

You're checking them off on the watch?

• 6:58David Imel?

  I could.

• 7:01David Imel?

I don't use an Apple Watch, so if I did, maybe I would.

• 7:05Speaker 01

You're pretty mad about this for someone who doesn't use an Apple.

• 7:07David Imel?

Because every time they kill something related to Keep, it's one step closer to the whole product dying.

• 7:12Speaker 04

It's just another warning that someone remembered it exists.

• 7:15Speaker 03

They'll replace it with something else that's bad. It'll be fine.

• 7:18David Imel?

  It's good.

• 7:20Speaker 03

  Okay, bud.

• 7:20Speaker 04

Google Keep has so much potential.

• 7:22David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 7:23Speaker 04

It's just being held back by arbitrary weird decisions.

• 7:27David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 7:27Speaker 01

  Pretty classic.

• 7:28David Imel?

  Welcome to Google.

• 7:29Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 7:30Speaker 01

Speaking of, uh, large brands, uh, remember like a week or two ago, this might have been two weeks ago, that I asked the question, how did they, how did they make an F1 movie? With a whole bunch of real company names all plastered over the cars and the helmets and the jerseys and stuff?

• 7:44David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 7:45Speaker 01

Uh, and we got the answer, which is Apple. They produced this movie. They sold sponsorships of these actual companies who paid to be in the movie and have their logos on the car, on the helmet, on the suits.

• 7:59David Imel?

  This is so smart.

• 8:00Speaker 01

So they made millions of dollars of just branding.

• 8:03David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 8:04Speaker 01

Uh, to have realistic jerseys and helmets and cars, but also to help pay for the movie.

• 8:09Speaker 04

  Just like real F1.

• 8:10Speaker 01

  Smart.

• 8:10David Imel?

I think it was the first like Avengers movie or something. Thing, but they just had like a long shot of a billboard that just said Coca-Cola. And they had like a truck that was driving by and it was, it was like following it the whole time. It was just like Coca-Cola. I think this makes more sense because this, you would see these brands in, in the real world on these cars anyway. So it makes a lot of sense to just like, let's swap them to have people pay us.

• 8:31Speaker 04

Isn't this a thing normally just in movies regularly? Like you can pay for product placement. You're like, oh, this Pepsi can over here, whatever, blah, blah, blah. Yeah. How much more do you think they charged to be on this versus just like a passing car?

• 8:43Speaker 01

I have an answer for you. I have an answer for you. The article says they made forty million dollars from all of the brand, the brand placements that are specifically involved with the F1 teams in the movie.

• 8:56David Imel?

And the movie costs about two hundred to three hundred million. So they literally made back like.

• 9:01Speaker 01

  Yeah, a good amount.

• 9:02David Imel?

  Yeah, like a good amount.

• 9:03Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:04David Imel?

  Wow.

• 9:05Speaker 01

So, uh, this is the first surrogate Andrew opinion interjection where he wanted you all to know about the Wayne's World product placement scene. Have you guys, have you, have you heard of this?

• 9:14Speaker 03

No, I've never seen Wayne's World.

• 9:15Speaker 01

It's a movie with, uh, it's like a minute straight of obvious product placements.

• 9:21David Imel?

  As a joke, right?

• 9:22Speaker 01

As a joke, but also probably could have also paid for the movie.

• 9:25David Imel?

  Yeah, for sure.

• 9:25Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:26Speaker 03

Do you know the inverse of this, um, from a movie, I can't remember if it's in a movie called Repo Man or a movie called Repo Men? I think it's Repo Man.

• 9:33David Imel?

  I think it's Repo Man.

• 9:34Speaker 03

  I think it's, I think it's Repo Man.

• 9:36David Imel?

  I think.

• 9:36Speaker 03

  I think so. I think you're right.

• 9:37David Imel?

  David Lynch, right?

• 9:38Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Right? Right? Now, now you're making, okay, it is David Lynch, right? I don't know what's real anymore.

• 9:43David Imel?

I only said that because I saw it on your screen.

• 9:45Speaker 03

There's a movie called Repo Man that is from at some point in the 20th century. That's a long time ago. But they did not want to go through the hassle of doing product placement deals. And so every product in the movie is plain white packaging with black, all caps texts that just says whatever product it is. So if a character cracks a beer, it is a white can that in black bold text just says beer.

• 10:08Speaker 01

Is that not how, um, Severance is shot as well?

• 10:12Speaker 03

Hmm. Severance is a slightly different flavor where the art department had to make every object from scratch.

• 10:18Speaker 01

Yeah. So there are no like time dating objects.

• 10:21Speaker 03

Exactly. But there are no brand labels, period, in that movie.

• 10:25David Imel?

  Except for Lumen.

• 10:25Speaker 03

This is like, uh, yeah, yeah, except for Lumen. But this is a little bit more like.

• 10:29Speaker 01

  Wow, spoiler alert.

• 10:29Speaker 03

Goofy goofy. Like, for example, there's a scene where a character goes into his fridge and pulls out what looks like a can of beans. And just starts like eating it straight from the can.

• 10:37David Imel?

  Beans on it.

• 10:38Speaker 03

  It just says food.

• 10:41Speaker 01

Is that like tongue in cheek on purpose?

• 10:43Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 10:43Speaker 01

  Okay, got it.

• 10:44Speaker 03

It's a goofy movie. It's not the goofy movie.

• 10:47Speaker 01

I was gonna say. Is it an extremely goofy movie?

• 10:49Speaker 03

It's just a regular goofy movie.

• 10:51Speaker 01

Yeah. Is it? You know what's funny? We, this is a video, I don't know how long ago I saw this video, but about how YouTube videos have to disclose product placement.

• 11:01Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 11:02Speaker 01

Especially when you're paid for anything. Yeah. Movies don't. Correct. Yeah, which is why we had to find out via an article that Expensify, Geico, Tommy Hilfiger, all these companies were in. How is that still true? Or why is there such a big difference? It's, it's two totally different governing bodies. It's one's the internet, one's movies.

• 11:20Speaker 03

I think about that all the time and I

• 11:23Speaker 01

  That's Gemini.

• 11:24Speaker 03

As much as I'm a butthurt content creator on the internet who's like, me, me, me, why do I have to go through all these hoops? Um, I do understand that no one is watching uh, this movie. No one's watching Brad Pitt in this movie. I really hope it's actually Brad Pitt.

• 11:40Speaker 01

  It is Brad Pitt.

• 11:41Speaker 03

I get him and Matt Damon mixed up all the time.

• 11:43Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's fair.

• 11:44Speaker 03

Watching, no one's watching Brad Pitt in this movie and thinking like, wow, Brad Pitt is a real race car driver who really, really likes Expensify. Right? Whereas like, when people watch us, you know, I'm not saying that we're super duper passionate about every ad read we've ever done. But it is us.

• 12:05Speaker 01

  Right.

• 12:06Speaker 03

  Telling you.

• 12:07Speaker 01

  Directly.

• 12:08Speaker 03

  Directly to buy something.

• 12:09Speaker 01

  True.

• 12:09Speaker 03

Like, like, like, and it's, so there should be, you shouldn't be able to see me go and like, damn, Ellis really loves Skittles. Like every video he's putting them back, man. When in actuality, like, um, you know, I don't, I, I actually don't like Skittles that much in real life, but I, so I would, anyway, this is going way off.

• 12:27Speaker 01

No, you're, that's a valid point. I just feel like I could blur that line a good amount. Like if there was a movie, if there is a superhero that everybody loved in a movie, that's obviously not real, but it's a superhero and the superhero always drives a certain type of car. Like maybe say, like, let's just make up a name, James Bond or something like that. And he always drives.

• 12:48Speaker 03

  He always drives.

• 12:49Speaker 01

He always drives the same type of car.

• 12:51Speaker 03

Always wears the same kind of watch.

• 12:52Speaker 01

Feel like that would be, while it isn't a personal endorsement, it still has the same.

• 12:59Speaker 01

Just level of like inspiring people to purchase the product.

• 13:03David Imel?

Do you want to hear Gemini's answer?

• 13:04Speaker 04

Yeah, but that's like a partnership more so, isn't it?

• 13:07Speaker 01

Sure, but you know, it's just in that example of like, they don't have to disclose that that's paid for. If a company paid to be the product that the superhero likes in the movie, they don't have to disclose that.

• 13:17Speaker 03

It's even though I don't think Aston actually pays for that. I think it's like so baked into the brand.

• 13:22Speaker 01

Oh, I just made that one up. That's a, I made up a company.

• 13:25David Imel?

  Made up James Bond.

• 13:26Speaker 01

And a movie, but go ahead, go ahead. Yeah, just I just made like Bond.

• 13:31Speaker 04

  My buddy James.

• 13:32Speaker 01

  Yeah, anyway.

• 13:33Speaker 03

But no one, wow, that was so funny. I totally lost my train of thought.

• 13:38David Imel?

Do you want to hear Gemini's answer for why this is the case? Okay, so apparently, people are supposed to have an understanding that things in movies are fictional.

• 13:49Speaker 01

  And paid for.

• 13:51David Imel?

And paid for. So it's saying like that when a character in a movie is like using a product, it's like that character is not that person. So you are not being like, oh, I trust this person. Whereas the reason on YouTube is that because it is a real person saying a real thing. And it's not assumed to be like a fictional character.

• 14:09Speaker 04

What if I had like a comedy skit?

• 14:11David Imel?

Yeah, I mean, it gets, it gets dicey.

• 14:13Speaker 01

And also, how come Apple's allowed to sue if the bad guy uses an iPhone? If it's implicitly fictional.

• 14:20David Imel?

I don't know if they can actually do it. However, I do have a thing I wanted to mention about that specifically. Because my friend Caleb is a, he's a VFX supervisor on movies. So he like goes and he like helps them frame the shots. So it's easier to do the supervision stuff. And he says that specifically, they do worry about Apple getting mad at them. So they always make sure to like, they have to like perfectly mask the UI and like make sure that it's a little different.

• 14:50Speaker 01

  The logos especially.

• 14:52David Imel?

Yeah, whereas with Android phones, they don't worry about it at all. And I asked why. I was like, is that a legal thing? And he's like, I don't think so, but we just are more careful with it because Apple's more scary.

• 15:02Speaker 01

It has to be illegal. Like what else could they be scared of? You're a movie producer. You have no relationship with Apple. You show Apple in a movie and Apple gets mad at you. That just is code for lawsuit, I think.

• 15:11Speaker 03

I don't know. I think, I think Apple is such a big company that's involved in so many different industries. That Apple in China book, a lot of that book is companies doing things just because they're scared. Like, no, no reason other than like, Apple could bankrupt us and literally not think twice about it. And, um, and so even if we're not legally exposed, like, there's no point in trying to go.

• 15:37David Imel?

This is what he exactly said. He said, um, the iPhone has to behave like an iPhone would in reality. So no skins of any different brand or anything. Everything has to be exactly, exactly accurate. And I said, is that something that Apple mandates somehow? And he said, yes. I've had to do so many shows that we had to recreate graphics for iPhones to the T. And I said, how do, how do they have, even have the right to force that? And he said, well, it mostly has to do with legal departments for many different companies covering their bases. I've never had to stick to stock Android for any phone because they just don't care.

• 16:11Speaker 03

  Sounds right.

• 16:12David Imel?

It sounds like Apple cares and no one else cares. That sounds like what it is. I bet you Google could sue if they wanted to, but they're just like, why?

• 16:19Speaker 01

You misrepresented the pixel. Meanwhile, they're just like, they use the pixel.

• 16:24Speaker 01

That's funny. Yeah, that's probably all fair.

• 16:26David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 16:26Speaker 01

Well, you know, now we know how the, the brands got into the F1 movie. I mentioned before the show, I think I'm going to see this movie. I'll probably like, watch it on a plane or something.

• 16:35Speaker 03

Now everyone knows what Expensify is.

• 16:37Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 16:37David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 16:38Speaker 01

Do they? Do they? I didn't watch the movie, so I don't know.

• 16:40Speaker 03

  I don't know.

• 16:40David Imel?

Adam and I used Expensify at Android Authority. We used it.

• 16:44Speaker 03

  Oh, what does it do?

• 16:45Speaker 01

Yeah. Careful, you might endorse it.

• 16:47David Imel?

I know, that's what it sounds like. Yeah. I think there's like a thousand different apps that do this now, so they're probably not that special. But it was pretty innovative at the time.

• 16:56Speaker 03

It was like business expenses and stuff.

• 16:57David Imel?

Basically, you take a photo of a receipt from like a business expense and it would automatically like parse it.

• 17:04Speaker 01

There's an article here that says, "Expensify capitalizes on F1 movie sponsorship to boost user growth and expand international product features."

• 17:10David Imel?

  Is that written?

• 17:12Speaker 01

No, it's a Tribune article. It's a real article. I'll put it in the Slack. It's really happening.

• 17:17David Imel?

Also related to F1, before we get off the topic.

• 17:20Speaker 04

Whoa, David with an F1 update?

• 17:22David Imel?

No, no, sorry. Not related to F1, related to the movie.

• 17:25Speaker 04

  Okay, got it.

• 17:26David Imel?

  Yeah, like I would give.

• 17:29David Imel?

Anyway, so, we talked about the vibration, I talked about this off the podcast too, but I just want to say this on the record, so people can scream at me on the record. The vibrational trailer, that everyone was super hyped about. Just go buy a Sony Xperia XC2.

• 17:44Speaker 04

  Actually, it's XZ2, David?

• 17:46David Imel?

  That's true. Yeah.

• 17:47Speaker 01

I was gonna make the joke, but it's actually six years ago that that phone came out.

• 17:51David Imel?

I thought it was longer, to be honest.

• 17:52Speaker 01

Yeah, so the six years ago joke.

• 17:54David Imel?

It was curved in a way where it slipped off of everything, and then when it would vibrate, it would just.

• 17:58Speaker 01

Slide around? The most obvious consideration for a phone that vibrates.

• 18:02David Imel?

It was not the greatest shape.

• 18:04Speaker 04

I mean, Xperia phones, that sounds about right.

• 18:07David Imel?

I just, and we were talking about this before, I just think it's funny, because at the time when that came out, it has this vibrational, it has this giant vibration motor, that can, I guess like parse the waveform of any audio source, and then it sort of vibrates to that, and everyone was like, alright, including me! And then this comes out, and everyone's like, wow! A vibrating trailer!

• 18:30Speaker 01

Yeah, there was just certain, there was a couple phones that did that, I think, I think, I don't know if HTC Boom Sound did this, but there was like an LG phone that would also like have the phone vibrate to whatever the bass frequency was, and so if your song had like a bassline, your phone would.

• 18:44David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 18:45Speaker 01

  It was a thing.

• 18:45David Imel?

We used to live in God's country, where every phone that would come out would have some really bad gimmick, and I loved that.

• 18:54Speaker 04

I mean, to be fair, this Apple trailer was also still a gimmick.

• 18:57Speaker 01

  Yeah, it was.

• 18:57David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 18:58Speaker 04

  So.

• 18:59Speaker 01

But iPhone users, it's been a while since I've seen a gimmick like that.

• 19:01Speaker 04

  That's true.

• 19:02Speaker 01

  They were really into it.

• 19:03Speaker 04

  Hey!

• 19:03Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 19:04Speaker 04

  Image Playground ain't that old.

• 19:07Speaker 01

  Touche, fair enough.

• 19:08David Imel?

Is it really a gimmick if not a single person's ever used it?

• 19:11Speaker 04

Isn't that what makes it a gimmick?

• 19:12David Imel?

I haven't even test, well, maybe I've tested it. I've opened it, I guess.

• 19:15Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 19:16Speaker 01

It mainly shows up in YouTube videos, and then, once in a while, people use it as a joke, I think.

• 19:20David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 19:20Speaker 04

  Image Play, yeah, yeah.

• 19:21David Imel?

  Alright, well, speaking of cars.

• 19:23Speaker 04

  Speaking of jokes.

• 19:24David Imel?

That was a good one. Damn, Ellis.

• 19:27Speaker 01

No, that was a good segue.

• 19:28David Imel?

  Come at me.

• 19:29Speaker 01

Speaking of cars, that was good.

• 19:30David Imel?

  Thank you.

• 19:31Speaker 01

Tesla did, in fact, deliver the first car from the factory fully autonomously. I will eat my words. I don't remember exactly what I said on the last podcast, but I think some of us agree that they would not do that on time, but they did.

• 19:45David Imel?

They did it a day early.

• 19:46Speaker 01

Yeah, they did it actually before they said they would. My main two things. One is like, okay, this is cool. They had like a route. They had a customer that was somewhat near to the factory, so they just had the thing drive through the plant, out the door, and just to the customer's house.

• 20:00David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 20:01Speaker 01

That's impressive, objectively speaking. But two-

• 20:04David Imel?

And he wasn't living at the factory.

• 20:05Speaker 01

Right. He, you know, some distance from the factory. But two is, while that is a really impressive tech demo, because we see these all the time, do we actually want that? Like, I thought that when buying a car, you'd maybe at least want to like inspect it first, and if it's got any blemishes, maybe something scratched it or something, you would want to not get it delivered. Isn't this a big thing with Teslas?

• 20:28David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 20:29Speaker 01

Do you want it to just show up at your door one day and it's like, there's your car?

• 20:32David Imel?

I also wonder how the legal stuff, that becomes, because generally, you don't have to take ownership of your car until you say, okay, there's no problem.

• 20:40Speaker 01

  Yeah, you sign some paperwork.

• 20:42David Imel?

But what are the legal implications if it drives itself to you and then it gets like scuffed up by like rocks that hit it on the road?

• 20:49Speaker 01

Yeah, you probably signed the, I think you probably, in this case, is a total guess, you probably sign all the paperwork before it leaves the factory, and then you agree to the conditions of this delivery, which are if anything happens between the factory and your house-

• 21:03David Imel?

How do they prove if it happened between the factory and-

• 21:06Speaker 04

I mean, I'm sure there's someone like, you know, when you rent a car, you walk around, you take pictures of it all around, you know? I'm sure there's someone there like doing a quality assurance check, and then you're like, yep, this one's good, send it out the door.

• 21:15David Imel?

I'm not saying it's like, oh no, this is horrible, but there are some interesting questions to be had when you have this new paradigm.

• 21:21Speaker 01

Yeah. It's also, you know, this is, every like thing that happens in the self-driving world, there's always a question of scalability, which is why, you know, people freak out about geofencing. It's like, it has to be everywhere, like this sensor versus that sensor.

• 21:34Speaker 01

This is, to me, just a tech demo, because this only scales to people who live near factories. Which is

• 21:41David Imel?

  Theoretically.

• 21:43Speaker 01

Well, unless they're gonna charge themselves, which they don't.

• 21:45David Imel?

Or have enough range to drive like 200 miles.

• 21:48Speaker 01

So if you live within 200 miles of one of the Tesla factories, then this is cool.

• 21:52David Imel?

  Right.

• 21:53Speaker 01

But obviously, that's not a ton of people.

• 21:55David Imel?

I mean, it's definitely, it was definitely more of a tech.

• 21:57Speaker 04

I mean, you don't think they could like, send it to a Tesla delivery area, like a Tesla.

• 22:02David Imel?

  Ship it there and then.

• 22:03Speaker 04

Yeah, like ship it there and then the last mile, let it do its thing, drive it to you, you know, like. Yeah, but they could do that already. That last mile is the hardest part. So like, if you just ship it to like where the delivery showroom is, and then have it drive away from there.

• 22:16David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 22:16Speaker 01

Then that, that is true, but I think they could do that already. I think the big deal about this was no one, no one ever sat in the car or drove the car. It was just autonomously through from the end of the assembly line to the person's house.

• 22:29David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 22:31Speaker 01

Which again is like, super impressive and it went well and no incidents and that's great, but like, it's more about the scalability, I think.

• 22:38David Imel?

  For sure.

• 22:38Speaker 03

Also, what happens if your car gets pulled over on the way to you and you get your new car with tickets on it?

• 22:45David Imel?

  I mean.

• 22:45Speaker 03

  Like off rip.

• 22:46David Imel?

I don't think the cop is gonna know what to do if no one's in the car.

• 22:49Speaker 01

That would be unless it starts happening way more, starts making illegal lefts and they're like.

• 22:53David Imel?

  Has Waymo ever been like?

• 22:55Speaker 01

  Ticketed?

• 22:55David Imel?

  Ticketed.

• 22:56Speaker 03

  I don't know.

• 22:56Speaker 04

I'm sure they got like parking tickets or like parking violations.

• 22:59Speaker 01

  It's gotta happen.

• 23:00Speaker 04

I wonder if you've gotten like a driving violation.

• 23:03Speaker 01

Like rolling through a stop sign and the cops like chasing it through the street.

• 23:05David Imel?

That was a yield. Up to the car and he goes, uh, can I see your license and registration, please? And it's like, bing, bing, bing.

• 23:12Speaker 01

The window rolls down, nobody's in the car.

• 23:13Speaker 03

I have no context, but I am currently on Reddit, watching a police body cam of a Waymo driver. So.

• 23:22Speaker 01

Driving on the wrong side of the road. So he walks up to the car and talks. Oh, because there's a person on the phone in the car.

• 23:27David Imel?

So it, it notices when it gets pulled over.

• 23:30Speaker 03

This is not, we, we can't determine anything real. I have no context for this video, but that is pretty funny.

• 23:35David Imel?

  That's pretty funny.

• 23:36Speaker 04

That would be a good way to handle it though. Like if it notices it's getting pulled over, just like call a Tesla employee and have them talking over the speakerphone.

• 23:42David Imel?

Seems like that's what Waymo does.

• 23:43Speaker 04

  Yeah, that's smart.

• 23:45Speaker 01

  So funny.

• 23:45David Imel?

Okay. Google would think of that.

• 23:47Speaker 01

Reminds me of like a super old video where Tesla had that self parking feature and then they had like a a skit video that they put on their YouTube channel. Have you seen this? Where like a cop attempts to give it a parking ticket and so it just pulls out and goes to another parking space. And then they try to get another ticket and it just pulls out and goes to another parking space. It was kind of a joke, but it was also like, these cars park themselves. Imagine if they just kept reparking themselves. It was funny at the time, okay? I thought it was cute.

• 24:14Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 24:15David Imel?

  Me at the zoo.

• 24:16Speaker 03

You know, it would have been more funny if the CEO of that company wasn't doing that in real life with more serious laws, maybe.

• 24:24David Imel?

There are laws. I'm seeing Andrew say that.

• 24:27Speaker 01

I don't think I could name all the laws.

• 24:28Speaker 04

Every time we talk about cars, people yell at us, but you know what they don't yell at us about?

• 24:32Speaker 03

  Oh, baby.

• 24:33Speaker 04

  Never, not once.

• 24:34Speaker 03

  Never, yeah, never.

• 24:35David Imel?

  Trivia, baby.

• 24:38Speaker 03

No one has ever gotten mad about a waveform trivia segment. Guys, from the big table, right here, don't look at my computer, you might see the answer.

• 24:46David Imel?

  Oh.

• 24:46Speaker 03

I wrote, I mean, Adam could ask the first trivia question, but I wrote it.

• 24:49Speaker 04

Yeah, it's his question. Let him have it.

• 24:51David Imel?

  Okay.

• 24:51Speaker 03

Yeah, let me have this, guys. Yesterday was my birthday.

• 24:54Speaker 04

  Yesterday? Happy birthday!

• 24:56David Imel?

  Yeah. I'm sorry.

• 24:58Speaker 03

  It's okay.

• 25:00Speaker 04

You didn't wish him happy birthday?

• 25:01Speaker 03

No! David, in your defense, when I texted you last night, I texted you at 12:30 a.m. So it was after my birthday.

• 25:10David Imel?

Yeah, I was in London. It was 5:30 a.m. for me.

• 25:12Speaker 03

  Anyway, guys.

• 25:13David Imel?

  Reasonable doubt.

• 25:14Speaker 03

This first question is an F1 sponsorship question.

• 25:17David Imel?

  Ooh.

• 25:18Speaker 03

Yes, yes, and it's not any of the basic one. Yeah. Exactly. I am, as a, as an internet content creator, I'm, no. It's not going to be any of the basic ones. It's not Mission Winnow. It's no barcode. It's none of the

• 25:31David Imel?

I don't know any of those words.

• 25:32Speaker 03

None of the goofy ones. This is a real deep cut, guys.

• 25:35David Imel?

  Okay.

• 25:35Speaker 03

Which of the following chart topping musical acts had their logo on an F1 car during a Grand Prix race? A. Smash Mouth. B, BTS. C, ABBA. Or D. Coldplay.

• 25:59David Imel?

  It's between two to me.

• 26:01Speaker 03

  Which two?

• 26:02David Imel?

  Wow.

• 26:03Speaker 03

  Or maybe don't say.

• 26:04David Imel?

  Yeah, which two?

• 26:07Speaker 01

I have a hunch, but I don't know exactly. But you know, answers will be at the end.

• 26:14David Imel?

What's that band that Steve Jobs was obsessed with and like forced everyone to listen? U2. U2. U2.

• 26:21Speaker 03

  U2's cool, man.

• 26:22David Imel?

U2 and Coldplay are like the same.

• 26:23Speaker 01

I was afraid we were gonna get in all of the above.

• 26:24Speaker 03

  Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.

• 26:27Speaker 03

  Say it again.

• 26:28David Imel?

  I just said it.

• 26:29Speaker 03

  What did you just say?

• 26:30David Imel?

  To.

• 26:31Speaker 03

You said U2 and Coldplay are like the same band?

• 26:33David Imel?

In my brain, yes. They're the same band.

• 26:35Speaker 03

U2, one of the most famous, like.

• 26:38David Imel?

  Coldplay is also famous.

• 26:39Speaker 03

  I know, but.

• 26:40David Imel?

  David, I'm with you.

• 26:41Speaker 03

  U2 is famous.

• 26:42David Imel?

Same band in my head. Thank you.

• 26:43Speaker 03

Guys, I just want to illustrate how ridiculous this is. U2 is like one of the most famous rock and roll bands of all time.

• 26:51David Imel?

  Rock and roll.

• 26:51Speaker 03

Coldplay is a band specifically famous for not having a guitar player in it.

• 26:56David Imel?

I knew neither of those. There's no guitar player in Coldplay?

• 26:59Speaker 03

  This is how ridiculous.

• 27:00David Imel?

When I think of U2, I just think of.

• 27:05David Imel?

  That's what it sounds like.

• 27:05Speaker 01

I just Googled each of the bands. They both have old people in them.

• 27:10David Imel?

Same, same band. They're both British too, right?

• 27:14Speaker 03

Oh, I lied. There totally is a guitar.

• 27:19Speaker 03

  I still.

• 27:20Speaker 01

  And on that note.

• 27:21David Imel?

  Answers will be.

• 27:22Speaker 03

Oh my God, and he lists U2 as one of his biggest influences. Maybe I have. They are very different bands. They are very different bands. No, the YouTube comments will support me on this. Very different bands.

• 27:34Speaker 01

We're gonna leave this one up to the comments for sure. We'll be right back.

• 30:00David Imel?

Welcome back, everybody, to the Waveform Podcast. We're your hosts.

• 30:05David Imel?

It's the middle of the podcast now, not the beginning. Uh, we're gonna talk a lot about nothing later, uh, but we're gonna talk about something now. And that something is the fact that there is a new report that Apple is reportedly looking to ship a 13-inch MacBook with an iPhone chip either later this year or early next year.

• 30:23Speaker 04

  Return of the MacBook, baby.

• 30:24David Imel?

  Yeah, return of the MacBook.

• 30:25Speaker 01

  Interesting.

• 30:26David Imel?

It's big news. Uh, I'm curious because it's 13 inches, which is the same size as the MacBook Air. So my question becomes, does this become a lower-tiered MacBook Air that's like 800 bucks instead of 1,000, which would sell like crazy? Or is this, what I wanted was a new 12-inch MacBook.

• 30:43Speaker 01

This could be, you're saying like below the Air?

• 30:46David Imel?

  Well, yeah.

• 30:47Speaker 01

Like even thinner and lighter than the Air?

• 30:49David Imel?

Oh, I don't care if it's thinner and lighter. I just wanted like a smaller screen.

• 30:52Speaker 01

  Oh, smaller screen?

• 30:54David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 30:55Speaker 01

And, um, maybe just like smaller footprint, I guess?

• 30:57David Imel?

  Yeah, footprint.

• 30:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 30:58David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 30:58Speaker 01

Yeah, this was interesting to me. I mean, obviously, we know the A chips in the iPhones and the M chips in Apple's Silicon Max are related.

• 31:08David Imel?

M chips are basically scaled up A chips.

• 31:10Speaker 01

Essentially, yeah. So when you, but they're so scaled up. Like the difference between an M1 and an A18 is pretty vast.

• 31:17David Imel?

  Pretty vast.

• 31:18Speaker 01

It would be a real, it would essentially be...

• 31:21David Imel?

  Like a Chromebook.

• 31:22Speaker 01

Yeah, like the level of power in an iPhone.

• 31:24David Imel?

Yeah, which is a lot. Which is a lot.

• 31:26Speaker 01

It is a lot for a phone, but I don't know. I guess I'm picturing the things people would wanna do on like a 12-inch MacBook, which is web browsing and like lightweight apps and things. Yeah, I guess it's kind of a Chromebook.

• 31:38Speaker 03

I, I have not read, and correct me if I'm wrong, in any of these rumor leaks that this is gonna be running macOS. I feel like everyone just saw a MacBook and assumed macOS.

• 31:48Speaker 01

  I think that's implied, though. It's MacBook's...

• 31:49Speaker 03

  It's totally implied.

• 31:50Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 31:51Speaker 03

However, however, early days, got a Love Island reference in there. Um, I don't know, man. I just, I could see, uh, I could see this being more of a Chromebook. I could see this running...

• 32:05David Imel?

Is it gonna have a whole new OS?

• 32:07Speaker 03

Well, to be honest, I could just see them doing a weirdly modified version of iPadOS.

• 32:12Speaker 01

That's what I was gonna say.

• 32:13Speaker 03

  For a MacBook?

• 32:13Speaker 01

Well, okay, if you're gonna go there, cuz iPadOS, iPadOS is...

• 32:17Speaker 03

  Oh, I went there.

• 32:18Speaker 01

Specifically touch-first. So this would have to be a MacBook that is touch-first.

• 32:25David Imel?

Don't let your facts get in the way of a good story, Mark.

• 32:27Speaker 01

Seems off limits to me, I would say.

• 32:29Speaker 03

There is not much, okay, here we go, here we go, ready?

• 32:34David Imel?

  I'm ready.

• 32:35Speaker 03

  The MacBook...

• 32:38Speaker 03

This is gonna sound crazy. The MacBook has been touch-first for a very long time. And I mean that not to say that there is a touchscreen in the MacBook. But macOS is so, so, so optimized for a trackpad. There are so many different ways to interact with this computer with one to four fingers. And you know from the way Apple's design team operates. Like, they really do think about a physical connection between your body and the computer when it comes to designing macOS. Ergo, a lot of that has ended up in iPadOS, since you can use a trackpad with it, right? Pinch to zoom, four-finger swipe. Now you got this new window system.

• 33:19Speaker 01

  And a free-floating mouse.

• 33:21Speaker 03

So I... Yeah, I thought you could get between fullscreen apps with a four-finger swipe on iPadOS.

• 33:26David Imel?

That's actually a swipe from the bottom bar.

• 33:28Speaker 03

  On iPadOS?

• 33:29David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 33:29Speaker 03

  Okay. See, but...

• 33:30David Imel?

Okay, but the thing about iPadOS...

• 33:31Speaker 01

There are similarities. There are things that they've brought over.

• 33:33David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 33:33Speaker 03

And I don't think it would be too much of a stretch to make iPadOS just as functional.

• 33:39David Imel?

  I mean...

• 33:39Speaker 03

If you lock it in a trackpad.

• 33:41David Imel?

The MacBook requires more precision mousing. And that's why the iPad, especially with the new pointer on the iPad, it sort of enlarges the elements a little bit. The previous version, where it was a fake circle mouse, it would just like snap to it.

• 33:54Speaker 03

But David, key word, it's not the MacBook that needs precision. It's macOS.

• 34:01David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 34:02Speaker 03

  I would be doubtful.

• 34:03David Imel?

  But it's also 13 inches.

• 34:04Speaker 03

  But why...

• 34:04David Imel?

  There's no...

• 34:05Speaker 03

  But...

• 34:05David Imel?

It's the same as the Air.

• 34:06Speaker 03

I know, but why would Apple ever kneecap a full macOS product by giving it an A18 Pro, which would struggle with so many tasks?

• 34:15David Imel?

  It wouldn't really struggle.

• 34:16Speaker 01

I know. Yeah, I think we're looking at two directly, like diametrically opposed philosophies, which is, one, the A-chips in the iPhone are meant to run iOS. And a MacBook by name is meant to run macOS. So we kind of, that's why it's weird to see... A chip in MacBook. And so we're trying to figure out, are they going to make this more of a Mac? Or more of an iPhone slash iPad?

• 34:44David Imel?

  It's a Mac.

• 34:45Speaker 01

Because of the internals. Now, if it's a Mac, if it's a 12 inch Mac or a 13 inch Mac, whatever.

• 34:49David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 34:49Speaker 01

  It has to run macOS.

• 34:51David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 34:51Speaker 01

And it has to not have a touchscreen. So is the point of running the A18 chip to be extremely power efficient? And we can already make a billion of these chips for no money?

• 35:01David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 35:01Speaker 01

And this is going to be like the ultra lightweight, you know, netbook of 2025? Is that what we're picturing?

• 35:06David Imel?

I think it's just like, they need an even lower end computer to sell to compete with even lower end computers.

• 35:13Speaker 03

  To do Chromebooks.

• 35:13Speaker 01

At this point, like the cheapest MacBook Air, the $9.99 MacBook Air that we have.

• 35:18David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 35:19Speaker 01

  Is a pretty competent computer.

• 35:21David Imel?

  For sure.

• 35:21Speaker 01

At this point. And so if you, if you're Apple and you're like, you know what we could do? We could offer a $600 computer laptop.

• 35:28David Imel?

  That would be crazy.

• 35:28Speaker 01

Which would be awesome for like getting people into macOS and like being an entry point for the, for the whole thing. Then I could see, in my world, I would go, okay, put an M1 chip in there. You can make a thousand of those for no money. But going all the way to the A chip feels like they're building, you know, the price ladders where they're like,

• 35:45David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 35:45Speaker 01

Here, you could buy the super cheap ultra lightweight machine.

• 35:48David Imel?

  For sure.

• 35:49Speaker 01

Barely able to do what you want it to do. So you might as well get a MacBook Air. That's what it feels like.

• 35:53Speaker 03

I mean, how would they communicate that to people though? How would they communicate? Like, obviously they could communicate like, this is a bottom tier MacBook. But for the average person who would not, who would see M4, M5, whatever we're on when this comes out? And then would also see A18 Pro. Would they know that that's the chip from the iPhone?

• 36:12Speaker 01

Yeah. That would have to be Apple messaging that this computer is extremely thin and light.

• 36:17Speaker 03

  It's called iMessage, actually.

• 36:19Speaker 01

They would, they would have to show the world and demo to people that this is the thinnest and lightest machine available. I mean, obviously there's going to be no fans. This is, an A18 chip runs on a tiny phone this big. So the whole PCB only has to be that big, plus some batteries. It's going to be so thin.

• 36:35Speaker 03

  This is something, actually.

• 36:36Speaker 01

  Think about battery consumption.

• 36:37Speaker 03

Yeah, this thing could be all battery.

• 36:38David Imel?

This thing could last for so long.

• 36:41Speaker 01

But that's not the Apple way. The Apple way is give it all day battery life and give it the thinnest amount of battery you possibly can. This could be the thinnest laptop ever, guys.

• 36:48David Imel?

That's true. It could be a thinner.

• 36:49Speaker 04

This will not be the computer to run Chrome on.

• 36:51Speaker 01

  No, it won't.

• 36:52David Imel?

I don't know. I think it's just money. So I, I think it's like, it could be 700 or 800 dollars. And then probably 800. And then they could have some benefits. They could say it has better battery life. It's a little less powerful, so you're not gonna be doing like heavy stuff, but if you're just like

• 37:07Speaker 01

  Lot less powerful.

• 37:08David Imel?

Writing notes. You need something that you wanna like, throw around with you, bring around with you, you on an iPad. I don't know. I, Apple is trying to make every price tier possible with like every product possible. And they already have that with the iPad. They have the cheap iPads, they have the mid-tier, and they have the expensive ones. With the MacBook, they have the really expensive ones and they have the like, really good value ones, like the MacBook Air is insanely good value for what it is. But they don't have the like, oh, I have very little money to spend on my new computer. I'm a broke college student, you know, that kind of thing.

• 37:41Speaker 01

Yeah, like the cheapest desktop Mac, the Mac Mini is a good deal. It was like 5.99 to start, I think for students, maybe 5 or 6.99.

• 37:48David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 37:48Speaker 01

If they had a laptop at that price too.

• 37:50David Imel?

  Right, exactly.

• 37:51Speaker 01

Then that would be a nice entry point for a laptop.

• 37:53David Imel?

Yeah, as a student, I would never want a desktop.

• 37:55Speaker 01

  Right.

• 37:55David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 37:56Speaker 01

So that's, yeah, it's an interesting idea.

• 37:59David Imel?

And they probably have a ton of A18 Bionic chips left over.

• 38:02Speaker 01

But don't they have a ton of M1 chips too? That's...

• 38:05David Imel?

Yeah, probably. But again, I don't know.

• 38:08Speaker 01

  Like they make M1 iPads.

• 38:10David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 38:10Speaker 01

  Already.

• 38:11David Imel?

Maybe they don't have as many M1 chips left over because they're putting in them in the iPads.

• 38:17Speaker 01

  Maybe.

• 38:17Speaker 04

I think this is so they can sell 900 of them to schools.

• 38:21Speaker 03

  That's a great point.

• 38:22David Imel?

That's a great point, because Chrome, Chromebooks also, yeah, if they make them cheap enough, they could probably convince schools to go MacBook over Chromebook. That is, that's a very big market for Google, so.

• 38:34Speaker 01

  True.

• 38:34David Imel?

And if, as long as you get kids indoctrinated into your platform.

• 38:37Speaker 01

  Chromebooks are really cheap, though.

• 38:39David Imel?

  They are.

• 38:40Speaker 01

Chromebooks that schools are buying are like, yeah, like 2, 300, not 600.

• 38:44David Imel?

Yeah, for sure. So, I mean, they might give them some sort of subsidy. Because to them, like, it's user acquisition, right? Like, it's a user acquisition cost of a four-year-old.

• 38:53Speaker 01

They seem really into that. Because they've got teenagers locked up in America, they might as well start gun.

• 38:59David Imel?

  Use Apple now.

• 39:00Speaker 01

Like, hey, iMessage for the six-year-olds.

• 39:03David Imel?

You've already got your Apple Watch.

• 39:04Speaker 01

  They're really into that.

• 39:05David Imel?

  Yeah, so.

• 39:05Speaker 03

I just want to lay a future Ellis prediction for that'll come and bite me later. But I do not think if this computer ships, it is going to ship with a full, unmodified macOS. I don't know if it'll be like iPadOS for Macs. If they call it that, I'm gonna laugh.

• 39:20David Imel?

  That'd be insane.

• 39:21Speaker 03

  But I really, I just really don't.

• 39:25Speaker 04

Yeah, I do think it would be very confusing if they do.

• 39:27Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 39:28David Imel?

  I think they will.

• 39:28Speaker 04

Because then like, are you gonna download Final Cut Pro on this thing?

• 39:32Speaker 03

No, if they did, you'd get a bunch of pop-up windows that were like, sorry, this application can only be opened on. And people are gonna freak out because no one's, no one who would consider buying this computer is, overlaps with the people who know what the A18 Pro is.

• 39:47Speaker 04

Unless it can only open Safari.

• 39:49David Imel?

  Counterpoint.

• 39:50Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 39:51David Imel?

Counterpoint, uh, the A18 Pro is probably faster than like the i7 MacBook from a number of years ago.

• 39:58Speaker 03

  Do you think so?

• 39:59Speaker 01

M1 would be. I just don't know about the A18. It's so small.

• 40:02Speaker 03

Yeah, I don't know about A18. I have the specs up right here. It does run at 4 gigahertz, which is not nothing.

• 40:08Speaker 01

It's, it's, those, those chips are supposed to run in phones. It's such a low power draw that I, maybe if they're like, supposed to run with way more power, they can actually do these things.

• 40:20David Imel?

Imagine a laptop that lasts like a week.

• 40:23Speaker 01

  I mean, I love the idea. I just don't think that's on Apple's radar.

• 40:26David Imel?

Lower power, lower, yeah, it doesn't do as much, but it lasts a week. I mean, that, that would be amazing.

• 40:31Speaker 01

  That sounds great to me.

• 40:32David Imel?

  Sounds great to me.

• 40:33Speaker 03

Can you, I don't know enough about chips. Can you benchmark an A18 Pro against an M1? Or are they too fundamentally different to like actually benchmark?

• 40:42David Imel?

You can use the same benchmarks.

• 40:44Speaker 03

Can you? They have such different memory.

• 40:46Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 40:47David Imel?

Like, they both use swap memory. I don't know.

• 40:50Speaker 01

Hmm. Yeah, you wouldn't, I mean, you've, we've never seen an A chip run Mac apps, so it's like, they won't be the same application. But I, I can run Geekbench on both and have it do like some similar things. And that gives you a sort of sense of what it's capable of. But like, yeah, the iPhone is not meant to do running these apps on the Mac, which is why it's very hard to say.

• 41:10David Imel?

  Moving on to nothing.

• 41:12Speaker 01

It always hits when I get to say that.

• 41:14David Imel?

Yeah, it's really never gonna get old.

• 41:17Speaker 03

Yeah, I'm really glad we have nothing to talk about today.

• 41:20David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 41:20Speaker 01

So, Nothing has unveiled two new things. We can talk about either one of them first. They unveiled the Nothing Headphone 1.

• 41:31David Imel?

  Headphone 1.

• 41:32Speaker 01

And the Nothing Phone 3. I've reviewed the Nothing Headphone 1, so if you're watching this and you haven't already seen the full review, go check that out. The video's on the main channel. We are showing you both of the versions here. I have the dark ones in my hand. I reviewed the light ones. People thought I was maybe compromised or hurt or forced to do that. But I just think they look better on camera, so I used the light ones. But if I had to buy a pair, I think these black ones look pretty good. Question number one, I guess we'll start with the headphones, since we've got them here.

• 42:03David Imel?

  Yeah, headphone 1.

• 42:04Speaker 01

  Let's go around the room.

• 42:05David Imel?

  Okay.

• 42:05Speaker 01

Ugly or not ugly? I think pretty decent-looking headphones. When you get them in your hands, they're unique. When you put them on your head, especially the dark ones, I think they look pretty decent.

• 42:16David Imel?

I think they look better in person than they do online.

• 42:19Speaker 01

  Agreed.

• 42:20David Imel?

I have some hot takes. I do think that the shape of the plastic piece on the sides should be the same curvature as the actual headphone like squircle thing. I think that would look better.

• 42:34Speaker 03

  I agree.

• 42:35Speaker 04

Like the corner radius is just like weird.

• 42:36David Imel?

It's just weird having two different shapes inset into each other. And then the other thing is that they use like plastic to cover it. I think if they'd been able to use like glass that didn't shatter in some way.

• 42:49Speaker 01

  Glass?

• 42:49David Imel?

Yeah, I don't know. The plastic, it just gets oily and gets fingerprints on it easily, and it looks a little bit cheap.

• 42:55Speaker 04

Yeah, David and I noticed this morning the black one.

• 42:57David Imel?

  The black one especially.

• 42:58Speaker 04

  Very fingerprinty.

• 42:59David Imel?

Yeah, and it kind of just takes away from the premium look of the aluminum on the headphones.

• 43:05Speaker 01

So, do you think they're ugly?

• 43:07David Imel?

No, I like the way they look.

• 43:10David Imel?

Just like Men's Warehouse. Indecisive, Adam.

• 43:12Speaker 04

I'm so indecisive on these. I'm so torn because I feel like when I'm looking at them, I like the way they look. And then I picture myself wearing them and I'm like, mm, I don't know. They're a little too out there for me.

• 43:23David Imel?

Storytime. I was in London yesterday and I was wearing them at a cafe. And a woman came up to me and the barista at the cafe, she came up to me and she goes, "Excuse me, I just, we keep talking about your headphones like behind the bar. Like what are they? They look so cool."

• 43:38Speaker 04

  That's what they want.

• 43:39David Imel?

That's straight from an ad. You're living in another. It literally happened.

• 43:42Speaker 04

That is why they are designed this way. And I don't know if I want that experience. I don't want to have to explain to people what my cool headphones are.

• 43:49David Imel?

Well, which is probably why you get the black ones, right?

• 43:51Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah.

• 43:52Speaker 01

So I, I tested the light ones. And I got this question a lot, like, Marquez, how did you test them on an airplane if you're not allowed to show them to people?

• 43:59Speaker 04

  Oh, we had to.

• 44:00Speaker 01

I just had to do it. I just had to trust that nobody would do anything.

• 44:07Speaker 04

  Do it.

• 44:08Speaker 01

I, I tested the light ones.

• 44:10David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 44:11Speaker 01

And I think the thing about flying with headphones is the headphones are supposed to be, at least in part, a statement of, probably don't talk to me right now.

• 44:20David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 44:20Speaker 01

  I'm wearing headphones.

• 44:21David Imel?

  Right.

• 44:21Speaker 01

And if your headphones are a conversation starter, it does the exact opposite. So that's something to keep in mind. Nobody came up to me though and asked, were you wearing the light ones when that happened?

• 44:31David Imel?

  Uh, yeah.

• 44:31Speaker 01

Yeah, nobody came up to me and asked me about the headphones.

• 44:33David Imel?

I think the light ones are going to catch a lot more attention.

• 44:35Speaker 01

They definitely do catch more attention. But the other thing about them is, uh, and we haven't even talked about how they sound yet, but I think they are built very well.

• 44:43David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 44:43Speaker 01

They feel great. They're comfortable. They're a little bit heavier than your all plastic headphones, your Bose's, your Sonys.

• 44:51David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 44:52Speaker 01

But maybe like 10 to 15%. And you do notice that on the ear cups because that's the metal that you're holding. But they're really well-built, solid.

• 45:00David Imel?

They don't feel too heavy on the head. Like they're, they're, the band is light. I like the texture of like the soft touch everywhere is really nice. The padding, like that touches that very top of the earhead is nice.

• 45:09Speaker 04

I just hate that they don't fold.

• 45:11David Imel?

Yeah, so they don't fold like down, they basically

• 45:15Speaker 01

  They rotate.

• 45:15David Imel?

They rotate, the ear cups rotate. They do rotate the correct way, which I will give them credit for.

• 45:20Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 45:21David Imel?

Instead of rotating backwards like Sony used to. Now, we, there is a bunch of buttons on them.

• 45:27Speaker 01

  Bunch of buttons. Physical controls.

• 45:29David Imel?

Yeah, so they made a big deal about the fact that they sort of wanted to make them more intuitive to use than other headphones, which I thought was a bit of a stretch.

• 45:38Speaker 01

Yeah, I didn't get to use these for more than like five minutes. So like, as you guys actually used them, did you think they were actually intuitive? Did you have to remap your wiring in your brain?

• 45:46David Imel?

  A little.

• 45:47Speaker 01

I love, I love the controls.

• 45:49David Imel?

Yeah, so let's talk about the controls. There's this one wheel on one of the sides that looks like a little pill. And you can turn it up and down to have the music, the volume go up and down. And there's this nice little click sound that kind of like,

• 46:00Speaker 01

  It's great.

• 46:00David Imel?

Like a scrolling sound, that's cool. You can tap that in to do playback, to do play or pause. And then you can hold it for the assistant.

• 46:10Speaker 01

Now, hold is A and C on or off?

• 46:12David Imel?

A and C on or off, right, sorry, yeah.

• 46:14Speaker 01

  And it makes us

• 46:16David Imel?

  Yeah, it's really weird.

• 46:17Speaker 01

So weird. It is what it is.

• 46:19David Imel?

And then they have this paddle on the side.

• 46:22Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 46:22David Imel?

You want to talk about the paddle?

• 46:23Speaker 01

The paddle, you can also reach and just quickly identify without being able to see it. It's a forward or backward track. Or you can hold it down to fast forward, or hold it back to rewind.

• 46:32David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 46:33Speaker 01

It works exactly as intended in Apple Music, and it works kind of in chunks in some other apps.

• 46:38David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 46:38Speaker 01

But still, very easy to go next track or previous track.

• 46:41David Imel?

I think that the worst button on these headphones is that there is a Bluetooth pairing button that is very, very, very hidden.

• 46:49Speaker 01

  I don't mind that one.

• 46:49David Imel?

Next to the ear cup. And I understand that you probably use that less than any other button on the headphones, so it makes sense to not make it prominent.

• 46:58Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 46:58David Imel?

But I was trying to connect these to the Nothing X app for like hours, and I, literally, I was like, they're not, how do you put them in pairing mode? I do not understand. In the box, when you take them out of the box, the box just says, Open, open the box and press the pairing button, but I couldn't find it anywhere.

• 47:16Speaker 01

Oh, it is subtle, is I think very good that you can't accidentally press it. I think that's why it's designed like flush like that.

• 47:22David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 47:23Speaker 01

So, and then the last button is on the outside of the right ear cup is just a single button that you can remap with the Nothing X app to do whatever. So by default, that just does the assistant on your phone. You can also map that to the essential space or to, or you can do a long press as well to do something else.

• 47:39David Imel?

I kept forgetting this was a real button.

• 47:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 47:41Speaker 04

Wait, so it does go, you can map it to the essential space?

• 47:44Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 47:44Speaker 04

And then it would take a voice note?

• 47:46Speaker 01

Yes, from the mic on the headphones.

• 47:47David Imel?

You can basically talk to it a bunch and then the essential space will like AI summarize what you talked to it about.

• 47:53Speaker 04

Can you like save notes and to do lists and stuff like that?

• 47:56David Imel?

Well, you can save notes to the essential space.

• 47:57Speaker 01

Yeah, there's a limited amount of things. You can't do like whatever you want with this button, but you can do several different things in the essential space.

• 48:04David Imel?

And obviously that's only if you're using it with a Nothing phone that has the essential space feature.

• 48:08Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 48:08David Imel?

But otherwise it like triggers the assistant and stuff, um, which is annoying.

• 48:13Speaker 04

Listen, I'm always here for more remapable buttons.

• 48:17Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 48:17Speaker 04

  I'm here for it.

• 48:18Speaker 01

Yeah. They are co-designed by K, not KEH, KEF. Sound by KEF, which it says in text on the outside of the headphones.

• 48:28David Imel?

  Oh, wow. Yeah.

• 48:30Speaker 01

I have never actually used any other KEF products, but I did snipe that there is one other set of active noise cancelling headphones on their website.

• 48:40David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 48:40Speaker 01

The rest is mostly speakers. A lot of you guys were telling me about KEF in the comments. I bought the headphones.

• 48:46David Imel?

  You bought them?

• 48:46Speaker 01

I bought them. So I own the KEF MU7s.

• 48:49David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 48:50Speaker 01

Uh, and they're fine. Very generic, very generic headphones. A lot of passive noise isolation plus ANC, which is also similar to these Nothing headphones.

• 48:58Speaker 04

  That's their thing.

• 48:58David Imel?

Yeah, that'll bring us into the sound of these. I think these sound like mixing headphones a little bit.

• 49:05Speaker 04

  What does that mean?

• 49:06David Imel?

It means that they're, well. Okay, okay.

• 49:10Speaker 01

  Yeah, tell Ellis.

• 49:11David Imel?

  Yeah, yeah, tell.

• 49:12Speaker 01

What do you consider the ones we are wearing right now?

• 49:14Speaker 03

Just finish, just finish your thought.

• 49:15Speaker 01

  The M50s?

• 49:16David Imel?

  Aren't they mixing headphones?

• 49:17Speaker 01

Not technically, no. But they're flat enough.

• 49:19David Imel?

  Okay.

• 49:20Speaker 01

  They're good enough for us.

• 49:20David Imel?

What I mean by that is that the sound signature is very flat. Like, it doesn't feel like very heavy in any of the specific frequencies, like heavy in the bass, heavy in the treble, bids, whatever. There's a-

• 49:32Speaker 01

  All about that bass.

• 49:33David Imel?

There's an app where you can, you know, there's an equalizer app in the Nothing X app. But, and like, I've messed around with that, but it never really felt sort of like, I don't know. It felt pretty flat to me. And they sound fine.

• 49:48Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 49:48David Imel?

But I feel like they could sound better.

• 49:50Speaker 01

  Like, uh, like Beats?

• 49:54David Imel?

  I don't, I don't really. I haven't really listened. Do you mean really bassy?

• 49:57Speaker 01

  Yeah, like more bass?

• 49:58David Imel?

No, I mean, annoyingly, I just really like the AirPods Pro. They just sound really, really, really good.

• 50:04Speaker 01

  That's cheating, though.

• 50:04David Imel?

I, yeah. Well, yeah, but, and I understand that these are over-ear headphones, so they're different. And I haven't really used AirPods Max extensively.

• 50:12Speaker 01

Hmm. But I can compare them, so I've used a bunch. Yeah, I've used Sony's for a while, I've used AirPods Max quite a bit, and I, like I said, I flew with these. These, uh, noise cancellation-wise are like a seven out of 10, maybe an eight. They have really good passive isolation, which I noticed, and then when you turn on ANC, they sound great, but with loud white noise like an airplane, it was still getting through.

• 50:36David Imel?

  That's what I noticed, too.

• 50:37Speaker 01

The Sony's would just completely block that stuff out.

• 50:39David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 50:40Speaker 01

Uh, so that's why I'm putting up like a seven or eight out of 10 with ANC. And then the sound quality itself, the way it's balanced, it's a little bassier for me. It's a little more fun sounding, a little more V-shaped to me. Uh, I thought it sounded totally fine.

• 50:55David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 50:55Speaker 01

Uh, and it was great for podcast music, whatever. I had no issues with it. I also played a tiny bit with the equalizer. You can jack up your sound with the equalizer. And I was kind of just playing a little bit with the frequencies.

• 51:05David Imel?

I mean, you just reviewed the Sony M6s.

• 51:08Speaker 01

  XM6s are incredible.

• 51:10David Imel?

  They're a lot better.

• 51:11Speaker 01

They are better, so here's how I ended the video. The M6s are better in every dimension you'd buy headphones for. They sound better, they have better ANC, they're lighter, more comfortable, you can wear them for longer, longer battery life, better case, everything's better about them, but- Are they $150 better? Because Nothing is only, I say only, they're charging $300 for these headphones.

• 51:31David Imel?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 51:32Speaker 01

Which, in the world of $300 headphones, this is about par. Like, the metal is above-average build quality, like, the ANC is about right. Like, these are, these are solid $300 headphones.

• 51:41David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 51:42Speaker 01

  The Sonys are $450 new.

• 51:44David Imel?

Yeah, they keep jacking the price of that.

• 51:45Speaker 01

So if you're gonna compare those two, like, yes, the Sonys are better, but I think you could argue the Nothing ones are a better deal.

• 51:50David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 51:50Speaker 01

Where it gets interesting is if you have an older pair of, like, the Mark 3s or Mark 4s from Sony, then it's like, you're playing in the same price range, then it's just like, do you prefer the design here? Do you prefer the controls here?

• 52:01David Imel?

Also, the Sonys go on sale for $100, like, every single holiday.

• 52:05Speaker 01

Yeah. So, I prefer the physical controls on the Nothing, I prefer the build quality of the Nothing, and I actually like the design of the Nothing headphones.

• 52:14David Imel?

Yeah, yeah, that's what I like.

• 52:15Speaker 03

How, how do I pair these?

• 52:17David Imel?

  The pairing button.

• 52:18Speaker 01

So you gotta turn 'em on first.

• 52:19David Imel?

  See my freaking point.

• 52:20Speaker 01

So on the right ear cup, there's a flip switch to turn on from, uh...

• 52:23Speaker 03

  We're on, we're...

• 52:24Speaker 01

And then you hold down the Bluetooth button on the inside of the left ear cup.

• 52:28Speaker 03

I didn't even find that button.

• 52:29David Imel?

  That's what I'm saying.

• 52:30Speaker 01

Inside the right ear cup, for like, three seconds.

• 52:32Speaker 03

I would've never found that. No, I just realized, uh, because you guys have been having these for the past few weeks, I haven't actually heard them. So I'll let you know how mixing headphone great...

• 52:39David Imel?

Do you wanna just connect them to my phone that they're already connected to?

• 52:42Speaker 01

Alright, so we're getting a live Ellis headphone...

• 52:46Speaker 03

Let's do this, boys. If you ever see me, I have no idea if I'm an ANC or not, um...

• 52:51Speaker 01

Wait, Ellis, these white ones look really dope.

• 52:52David Imel?

Oh, no, it'll breathe into your ear.

• 52:53Speaker 03

They look really dumb on you?

• 52:54Speaker 01

  No, really dope.

• 52:55David Imel?

  They do look good.

• 52:55Speaker 03

  Uh, thanks.

• 52:56David Imel?

I think they're really good, look.

• 52:59Speaker 03

If you ever see me using the built-in EQ on a pair of headphones, know that, uh, it's not...

• 53:04Speaker 01

  That's your cry for help.

• 53:05Speaker 03

No, no, it's literally not me, it's like, some sort of secret agent that's impersonating me, and you need to kill him as soon as possible.

• 53:11David Imel?

If these are not mixer head, like, mixing headphones, like, what would these be considered?

• 53:15Speaker 01

  These...

• 53:15David Imel?

  Consumer headphones.

• 53:16Speaker 01

These are just consumer, I mean, these are gonna try to compete with Beats. These?

• 53:20David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 53:21Speaker 01

These are also consumer headphones, but in the genre of, uh...

• 53:26David Imel?

Aren't they much flatter to, like, allow for more...

• 53:28Speaker 01

Yeah, 'cause mixing headphones are like, are...

• 53:33Speaker 01

  Soulless, like blank EQ.

• 53:35Speaker 04

  I thought these were.

• 53:36Speaker 01

These aren't quite that flat. They're still flatter than average. It's a spectrum.

• 53:40Speaker 04

These have a little more bass.

• 53:41Speaker 01

There's beats on one end and there's the Sony MDR headphones on the other end.

• 53:44Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 53:44Speaker 01

And these are closer to that, but it's not like blank, I'd say.

• 53:48Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 53:49Speaker 01

  Ellis has got a face.

• 53:50Speaker 04

  He's thinking.

• 53:50Speaker 01

As he listens to these headphones.

• 53:51Speaker 04

  Thinking face. He's impressed?

• 53:53Speaker 01

A little bit of a nod. Interesting. He's streaming Bluetooth music to the headphones.

• 53:58David Imel?

The best headphones I've listened to the new Streetlight Manifesto tracks on.

• 54:02Speaker 04

  Oh, God.

• 54:02Speaker 01

Do you think he's listening to YouTube or Coldplay right now?

• 54:05David Imel?

  What's the difference?

• 54:06Speaker 01

  Same thing.

• 54:09David Imel?

  They do look really good.

• 54:10Speaker 01

He's switching tracks again. He's moving to another music track.

• 54:12Speaker 04

I'm sorry, this is like so much fun to watch right now.

• 54:15Speaker 01

No, we're narrating what you're doing. It's great.

• 54:17David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 54:18Speaker 01

I do think they're good looking headphones.

• 54:19David Imel?

I just used them on the plane this morning and I do think that the ANC is good in the high end mids, but the low end ANC like doesn't work at all. Like I had it on high and it was just like.

• 54:33Speaker 04

Wait, so you can still hear like the airplane?

• 54:35David Imel?

  The droning of the airplane.

• 54:36Speaker 04

Oh, interesting. Usually it's in reverse. Like it usually is really good at taking out those.

• 54:39David Imel?

I know. That's what was weird. Like there was no, yeah, I couldn't hear anything. And when people talk to me, I can't hear it. But the, the actual sound of the airplane, the like low hum, I could hear like very.

• 54:49Speaker 01

I think, I, I think my distinguishing, my observation was the exact same, but I thought it was volume based. I think it's just the plane is so loud that it was just, the floor is just a little bit above zero.

• 55:01David Imel?

But when I use other headphones, like it cuts it.

• 55:03Speaker 01

Right. So I'm saying these, the ANC in these is not strong enough to cancel the loudness of the plane. No matter what frequency it is.

• 55:11David Imel?

  Maybe.

• 55:11Speaker 01

But when people talk, that's not going to be loud enough.

• 55:12David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 55:13Speaker 01

  Anyway.

• 55:13David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 55:14Speaker 01

Ellis is still going. So should we move on to the head, to the phone while he finishes testing?

• 55:18David Imel?

Sure. Yeah. We'll move on to the phone. The phone.

• 55:21Speaker 04

  Yeah, I don't know, man.

• 55:23Speaker 01

That's about right for the headphones.

• 55:24David Imel?

  That's how I felt too.

• 55:27David Imel?

My review. I don't know, man.

• 55:30Speaker 03

I don't know, man. I am so like the worst person to ask about headphones.

• 55:34Speaker 04

  That's not true.

• 55:35Speaker 03

It is. It is true. Unfortunately, it's just because I really just feel like it's whatever you like the best is always gonna be the best. Okay, but what I think about these is that things that I really appreciate. Sub bass, like all headphones, is not awesome, that you don't really even perceive those frequencies with your ears. So like headphones would not be able to reproduce them anyway.

• 55:56Speaker 04

You don't feel it in your chest?

• 55:57Speaker 03

You do feel it in your chest, but you're, yeah, unless you had.

• 55:59Speaker 04

  With those headphones, I mean.

• 56:00Speaker 01

I love the headphones like this.

• 56:02Speaker 03

I was gonna say, if you had some sort of like bizarre like try, anyway, so.

• 56:07Speaker 04

Oh, wait, to that point, really quick, to kind of loop into what we were talking about earlier.

• 56:11Speaker 03

  Oh, while I had ANC.

• 56:12Speaker 04

No, my, no, no, no, from like the beginning of the pod. That CES demo that I tried with the haptic thing, it was, that was the use case. It was you can listen to music and if you have the little thing, you would get the sub pack.

• 56:22Speaker 03

It was the sub pack, yeah. That's, I know people that swear by those.

• 56:26Speaker 04

It was cool. It just was a gimmick. I was like, okay.

• 56:29Speaker 03

You know who swears by the sub pack, or at least did during COVID?

• 56:32Speaker 04

  Who?

• 56:33Speaker 03

  Timbaland.

• 56:34Speaker 04

He also does like AI artists instead of real artists.

• 56:38Speaker 03

You ever heard a song that was like?

• 56:39Speaker 04

  Timbaland? Yeah.

• 56:40Speaker 01

  No.

• 56:41Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 56:45Speaker 01

  That was Timbaland.

• 56:46Speaker 03

That's literally every Timbaland song, and I love him.

• 56:49Speaker 04

Sorry to cut you off. Continue.

• 56:51Speaker 03

Like bass, bass, not sub bass is good. I like that it's low distortion. I can hear some details in it. The mids also low distortion for headphones in this price range, which I think is pretty cool. That's like a big thing for me at headphones. The highs are dog water on these things. Don't expect to hear a single detail in like any of the music you listen to. They're not particularly even. They don't have good stereo imaging, which is like not uncommon for wireless headphones. What else? I guess those are some bad things that I accidentally put in the good things list.

• 57:23Speaker 04

Yeah, no, they're, but they were comfortable.

• 57:25Speaker 03

They're unbelievably comfortable. I love how deep the cups are. I love the material the foam is made out of. I love watching it return to form slowly like a Tempur-Pedic pillow.

• 57:33Speaker 04

I had to ask if the ear cups were replaceable because.

• 57:36Speaker 01

As hard as I tried, it didn't feel like I could take them off.

• 57:39Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah.

• 57:39Speaker 01

The response that I got was technically they are removable. However, it is very difficult and we're not selling replacement cups yet. So basically not removable.

• 57:48Speaker 04

So in six months, when these have all my summer sweat.

• 57:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 57:52Speaker 04

  Destroyed them.

• 57:52Speaker 01

Something to think about. I really do hope that they start selling your cups or making it easier because I do want them to be replaceable.

• 58:00Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 58:02Speaker 03

I would say as far as Ellis's Sound Man opinion on these headphones is that unless you are someone. That was a cloud lifter falling onto the ground. Unless you are someone who has like one ultra specific thing that you want in a headphone. Like I want amazing high end clarity. I want as little distortion in the mids as possible. I want noise cancelling that works exactly like this. I would say almost any over the year headphone you buy is gonna be about the same. Like we're talking like a pretty small delta and, um, and they're all trash. That's, that's kinda how I feel. It's just like all headphones are bad. You just gotta pick the one that is bad in a way that you.

• 58:46Speaker 04

  Enjoy.

• 58:47Speaker 03

Enjoy. And if you really want amazing sounding headphones, they're called speakers.

• 58:52David Imel?

Well, they had one more feature that I don't understand that they talked about a lot and I still don't understand. And it's called a channel hop. Did, did they talk to you about this?

• 59:02Speaker 01

  They did not.

• 59:02David Imel?

Yeah, so they have this feature called channel hop and the idea is that you can set up a number of different, uh, audio apps on your phone and you can just use the paddle to just jump between the audio apps. And they were like, yeah, so if you're listening to one thing on Spotify and then you wanna listen to another thing on Apple Music, you just flip the paddle and then suddenly you're listening on Apple Music. And I'm like, wait.

• 59:24Speaker 01

  What?

• 59:25David Imel?

  What? Wait.

• 59:25Speaker 01

  Why would I?

• 59:26Speaker 03

  iOS already does that.

• 59:28Speaker 01

  Why would I wanna?

• 59:29David Imel?

Well, it's literally called, it's a feature that they have in it and they talked a lot about it.

• 59:34Speaker 01

I would just open my phone at that point. That's kinda.

• 59:36David Imel?

  I don't understand.

• 59:37Speaker 03

Wait, does it, can I plug it? Wait.

• 59:40Speaker 04

Yeah, David and I were really trying to figure this out earlier.

• 59:42David Imel?

If you can figure out why this is useful, that would be helpful to me. I don't know, I don't really get it. Um, if anyone gets it, let me know.

• 59:49Speaker 04

This is our cry for help.

• 59:50Speaker 03

We're getting Carl played right now.

• 59:52Speaker 04

I would say wa- watch the four of you.

• 59:55Speaker 01

I've had them for a week. We go into way more detail. The other thing we can talk about is the phone itself, the Nothing Phone 3.

• 1:00:01David Imel?

  Nothing about 3.

• 1:00:01Speaker 01

This one, we don't have as much detail to talk about because it's gotten announced and we've gotten specs and we've gotten features.

• 1:00:06David Imel?

I got to play with it a bunch.

• 1:00:07Speaker 01

You got to play with it.

• 1:00:08David Imel?

  And I have footage.

• 1:00:09Speaker 01

So we have some thoughts, but obviously the review is not out yet. It is coming soon.

• 1:00:13David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:13Speaker 01

Um, I will again go around the table. Is this thing ugly?

• 1:00:18David Imel?

  No.

• 1:00:19Speaker 01

  David says no.

• 1:00:20David Imel?

  I think it looks great.

• 1:00:21Speaker 04

  I say yes.

• 1:00:22Speaker 01

  Adam says yes.

• 1:00:23Speaker 03

  I haven't seen it yet.

• 1:00:24Speaker 01

Ellis hasn't seen it yet. Perfect. I'm gonna pull it up.

• 1:00:26Speaker 04

  Tiebreaker.

• 1:00:27Speaker 01

  I think yes, it's ugly.

• 1:00:29David Imel?

  It's so good looking.

• 1:00:30Speaker 01

  Nothing Phone 3.

• 1:00:32Speaker 04

I think all of their phones.

• 1:00:33Speaker 01

Turn my monitor to Ellis right now and get a live reaction. Is this to you an ugly phone?

• 1:00:43Speaker 03

  What? What?

• 1:00:45Speaker 01

  It looks great.

• 1:00:46Speaker 03

Dude, that looks like, like first generation Dolly render of a phone.

• 1:00:51Speaker 01

  It's like a teenage engineering.

• 1:00:52Speaker 03

  It looks nonsense.

• 1:00:54Speaker 01

So I'm gonna go with ugly. Yeah. I think this is a polarizing phone where one-third of people will go, oh, this is kinda neat. And two-thirds of people will go, ah, it's kinda wonky. There is a screen on the back, a 25 by 25 pixel glyph matrix. They've gotten rid of the normal lights they had on the back of the phone before. This is a $799, quote, flagship phone, but without a flagship chip. It's a Snapdragon 8S Gen 4. It is a plastic bag, tripled 50 megapixel cameras. Actually, I don't know if it's a plastic bag. I think it's Gorilla Glass back. But triple 50 megapixel cameras on the back and a 50 megapixel selfie camera, silicon carbon battery, 5100 milliampere battery, fast charging. Just a bunch of things going on with this phone, but the aesthetics are the thing that is hard to get over at the beginning.

• 1:01:39David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:40Speaker 01

  Uh, yeah.

• 1:01:40David Imel?

  I think it looks great.

• 1:01:41Speaker 04

I feel like all of Nothing's phones are beautiful. I think this phone in particular is like not the prettiest one. Because of the asymmetry of the cameras. That is throwing me off.

• 1:01:54Speaker 03

Now that I've looked at it for a little bit, this is the best looking phone in this world.

• 1:01:59Speaker 01

  I disagree.

• 1:02:00Speaker 03

  It's bold.

• 1:02:01Speaker 04

The 3A is the best looking phone.

• 1:02:03Speaker 01

You slipped me $50 under the table to say that.

• 1:02:05Speaker 04

  The 3A.

• 1:02:06David Imel?

Oh, the Nothing about 3A? Yeah, I mean, that's a good looking phone.

• 1:02:07Speaker 01

  It was beautiful.

• 1:02:08David Imel?

I, look, I'm into stuff that doesn't look...

• 1:02:12Speaker 01

  Good?

• 1:02:13Speaker 03

  You think the Nothing 3A?

• 1:02:15David Imel?

I think it looks good because it's weird.

• 1:02:17Speaker 04

  Is that the gray one?

• 1:02:18Speaker 03

Do you think the Nothing 3A is the prettiest?

• 1:02:19Speaker 04

  Yeah, that phone is beautiful.

• 1:02:21David Imel?

  That phone looks great.

• 1:02:22Speaker 01

  Okay, here's what is-

• 1:02:23Speaker 03

I can't reach the wrong button from here.

• 1:02:25Speaker 01

Here's what is unique and I think is why the cameras look the way they do. The periscope camera, these phones that all have periscope cameras have large camera bumps because they have large sensors and large optics arrays that cause this z-axis depth off of the back of the phone.

• 1:02:41David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:41Speaker 01

This phone doesn't really have a huge camera bump. It does have like camera rings, kinda like a Samsung phone. But with this big periscope camera, they actually punched that through the PCB so that instead of the whole thing being on one side and stacked on top of the PCB, they've like punched the element through the PCB. So there is no camera bump, but there are small camera rings instead.

• 1:03:05David Imel?

  Right.

• 1:03:05Speaker 01

That is the thing that they are proud of. The downside is it's just not aligned in any axis with any of the other cameras. So it's kind of a weird blob.

• 1:03:16David Imel?

But, counterpoint, it has like a counterweight on the side of it.

• 1:03:20Speaker 04

But it's the same color as the rest of the phone.

• 1:03:22Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:03:22David Imel?

Yeah, if they had made the counterweight thing a different color, I think it would have looked more even. Because technically, those are like, the pieces in the top are subdivided into like three boxes. And technically, that camera does fit inside the box with the counterweight part. And it does fit kinda evenly there.

• 1:03:42Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:03:42David Imel?

If the counterweight had been slightly different color, I think it would have looked more even.

• 1:03:46Speaker 01

  Fair. Yeah. But it doesn't.

• 1:03:49David Imel?

Well, I still think it looks great. Okay, so-

• 1:03:51Speaker 04

All this and it was just the aesthetics.

• 1:03:53David Imel?

Yeah, so they got rid of the famous glyphs that Nothing has always had, but they added-

• 1:03:57Speaker 04

  Kind of.

• 1:03:58David Imel?

Well, they added a thing called the Glyph Matrix.

• 1:04:00Speaker 04

Yeah, it just got moved into there.

• 1:04:01David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:02Speaker 01

It's a tiny screen on the back.

• 1:04:04David Imel?

It would've been nice if they had both, because the glyph was like a, I mean, that was the key part of the Nothing phone. And I also wish that they had just updated the glyphs to be able to do like multiple colors or whatever, just like the Nexus 6 when I jailbroke it.

• 1:04:15Speaker 01

  Damn.

• 1:04:16David Imel?

Uh, yeah. But now this Glyph Matrix has a number of things that they call Glyph Toys.

• 1:04:23Speaker 01

  Genius.

• 1:04:24David Imel?

  Which is a weird way-

• 1:04:24Speaker 04

  I love it.

• 1:04:25David Imel?

  It's a weird name. I don't like that.

• 1:04:27Speaker 04

  It's so good.

• 1:04:28David Imel?

  I don't.

• 1:04:28Speaker 01

You don't have to name everything, guys.

• 1:04:30David Imel?

  Yes, you do.

• 1:04:30Speaker 04

If Apple could do it, by god, nothing can do it.

• 1:04:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:04:34David Imel?

Yeah. But basically, it's this little tiny... It's this tiny diode grid, and you can do a number of different things on it. They have a number of different apps built in so far. They have a bubble level, which can be kinda helpful, I guess. They have a digital clock, so in like a count, like a stopwatch clock that's pretty good-looking.

• 1:04:52Speaker 04

  And a regular clock.

• 1:04:53Speaker 03

  That's cool.

• 1:04:53David Imel?

And a regular clock to show you the time. They have a battery indicator that shows you like the battery percentage, as well as like a drain sort of like level thing. They have the mirror app, which basically gives you like a little subdivided grid.

• 1:05:07Speaker 03

Yeah, do we think that's gonna work?

• 1:05:09David Imel?

It... I used it at the event.

• 1:05:11Speaker 03

  And it worked?

• 1:05:11David Imel?

  It...

• 1:05:11Speaker 03

Because I just used the computer version of it?

• 1:05:14David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:14Speaker 03

And I'm in a very well-lit room right now.

• 1:05:16Speaker 04

Oh, does it look great? No, but you can tell where you are.

• 1:05:18David Imel?

  That is pretty much...

• 1:05:20Speaker 03

You know, I... No, I... You actually can't. From, from the...

• 1:05:22David Imel?

No, that is basically... So it's not technically... Okay, so it's basically a viewport for the main camera, because you can... There's a, a, a cap... It's not capacitive. It's a button on the back of the phone.

• 1:05:37Speaker 01

  There's a pressure sensitive...

• 1:05:38David Imel?

A pressure sensitive button that you use to interact with the toys. I hate that sentence. I really... I'm an adult.

• 1:05:46Speaker 04

That's why you need fun in your life. That's why they're called toys.

• 1:05:48Speaker 01

So you can play Spin the Bottle and Rocket...

• 1:05:50David Imel?

Yeah, okay, so there's also Spin the Bottle, and I just have to... This is really funny, because I don't think Carl Payne knows what Spin the Bottle's for.

• 1:05:57Speaker 03

Dude, he def... What? I think he... 100%.

• 1:05:59David Imel?

During the... He, he knows. But it... He knows, but it was at the event, they were like... They had a little video, and they showed these four friends like eating, like eating dinner, and they're like, "It's time to pay the bill, let's..." Well, no, no, they were like, "Let's play Spin the Bottle." And then it was like, they were panicking. "Oh no, who's it, who's it gonna land on?" I was like, "Is this about to get weird?" And then, they were like, "Oh, guess you have to pay the bill." And I was like, "Ah, okay."

• 1:06:22Speaker 01

Oh, that's what Spin the Bottle is for.

• 1:06:24David Imel?

  And then he kinda laughed.

• 1:06:25Speaker 04

Listen, it took someone like five minutes to code this, just so that it could do that in a keynote, and I think totally worth it.

• 1:06:30Speaker 03

No, it took someone five minutes to code this, just so nothing phone users could call everyone else Kissless Virgins.

• 1:06:37David Imel?

They had, they have a solar clock, which is pretty cool. It shows like a horizon and it shows where the sun is in the sky. Which is pretty cool. I like that. Um, they have rock, paper, scissors, so you can play against your phone. Um, I famously have won multiple times against my, against the phone at the, at the demo unit station. Which is cool. I also played my phone, the phone I was using at the demo station versus the phone that a friend of mine was using at the demo station. And I won multiple times, which is also cool.

• 1:07:04Speaker 04

Did you tweet that six years ago?

• 1:07:05David Imel?

Um, no. But they also have a magic eight ball and the magic eight ball one is funny.

• 1:07:09Speaker 04

  That's awesome.

• 1:07:10David Imel?

It shows up and then you shake the phone like a magic eight ball and then it does the like the bubbly thing. And then it shows you the answer like better luck next time or whatever. But it has, uh, it uses the gyroscope and the vibration motor. And so as you like rotate the phone, the like, the thing, the thank you or like better luck next time moves around, you can feel it sort of vibrating.

• 1:07:29Speaker 04

This is just like the nothing dynamic island.

• 1:07:33Speaker 01

  Even worse.

• 1:07:34David Imel?

This is less, no, this is way less useful.

• 1:07:36Speaker 04

Yeah, but only because they're the ones that made the 20 or so apps that are on it.

• 1:07:41Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's my question.

• 1:07:42David Imel?

  They have an APK, yes.

• 1:07:43Speaker 04

  Yeah, exactly.

• 1:07:44David Imel?

They have an open APK, API. Yes, sorry, API.

• 1:07:48Speaker 01

Yeah. So, cause now at this point with the phone just coming out, this is for me firmly in gimmick territory.

• 1:07:56David Imel?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:07:56Speaker 04

But what if like Flighty came to Android, got, crazy idea, I know. But, and then on the back of your phone, you could see like, oh, Flight is departing in 40 minutes.

• 1:08:05Speaker 01

  Is that?

• 1:08:06Speaker 04

You know, like app developers need to put this in.

• 1:08:07David Imel?

It's hard when these companies, like, it's really difficult when these companies introduce some new gimmick. And they're like, there's an open API, but then literally the next generation, they just get rid of it.

• 1:08:17Speaker 01

  That's true.

• 1:08:17David Imel?

So the glyphs, I don't know how many people are gonna develop for it because again, who knows if they're gonna keep it? That's kind of the awkward thing.

• 1:08:24Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:08:25David Imel?

You need a company to really be like, this is our new direction. We're doing this for at least four generations. You can develop for it, you know, cause Razor has famously done this too, where they like come out with a laptop with some new crazy feature. And they're like, open API developers, come on. And then the next year they just get rid of it.

• 1:08:42Speaker 04

What's the matter developers? Don't you love developing?

• 1:08:45David Imel?

Yeah, come on. Don't you love like spending some resources for a small audience?

• 1:08:49Speaker 01

You know, a lot of, uh... Tech enthusiasts, even like myself and reviewers, we want constant improvement and we want things to get better. So when I see something like a hole punch cut out for a selfie camera and Face ID, and then Apple makes dynamic island around it.

• 1:09:04David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:05Speaker 01

I go, "Oh, okay. This is a nice way of making up for like this, you know, technology that's not ready to go fully under the screen yet." But I expect that dynamic island and that hole punch to get smaller every year until it's gone.

• 1:09:19David Imel?

  Right, right, right.

• 1:09:20Speaker 01

And Apple, even though you could argue it's stagnant or whatever, to their credit, developers will develop something for dynamic island, and there will be years of phones with the same dynamic island.

• 1:09:30David Imel?

  Yeah, exactly.

• 1:09:31Speaker 01

So they can at least count on it like working well with all these phones.

• 1:09:34David Imel?

They're also reaching like billions of people, whereas nothing with a single version of the Nothing phone. You just don't know, like you said, you don't know if it's gonna last a long time. So, anyway, I mean, it's cool, it's gimmicky, it's fun. If you're gonna develop like a fun little app for it, then I think that's dope. But yeah, besides that, there's, just like on a previous Nothing phone, there's that small little red square.

• 1:09:57Speaker 01

  Little red light.

• 1:09:58David Imel?

This time it's actually a light.

• 1:09:59Speaker 01

  It's a record light.

• 1:10:00David Imel?

And I think that you said that, I think we might have said that in the last video of the phone that had that, that it would be cool if it was functional.

• 1:10:07Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:10:07David Imel?

  I don't know, maybe we didn't.

• 1:10:09Speaker 01

I'll take credit. No, I'll take credit. I love that. I love that.

• 1:10:12Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:10:12David Imel?

  Um, Garak, is this true?

• 1:10:14Speaker 03

Um, Garak, context, please. Ah, that never gets old.

• 1:10:19David Imel?

Yeah, but now when you're recording with the phone, that little square will blink, which is cool. I think that's nice. It's not that bright, so outside, I don't know if you're gonna be able to see it, but inside you can, which is nice. They have this new thing called Essential Search, and basically, it's like, it's a system-wide search similar to the persistent Google search bar, but it's also an LLM using Gemini Nano.

• 1:10:40Speaker 01

  You're losing me, David.

• 1:10:41David Imel?

Not Gemini Nano, using Gemini. Well, now, okay, so now, instead of, when you're searching your phone, you can search for an app, you can search for, you know, a calendar event or whatever, which is cool. But you can also just say like, "What are the name of Saturn's moons?", and it just shows it to you using Gemini Nano.

• 1:10:57Speaker 04

  Will it make one up?

• 1:10:59David Imel?

  Probably.

• 1:10:59Speaker 03

Yeah, so it'll just be wrong.

• 1:11:00David Imel?

But, alright, maybe it's not Gemini Nano, it's just regular Gemini, because it requires an internet connection.

• 1:11:05Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:11:05David Imel?

But it, uh, yeah, it's, I don't know, I think it's interesting to not have to have the Gemini app open, and you can just like, you can now use this search bar for anything that you want to search.

• 1:11:17Speaker 01

  Huh.

• 1:11:17David Imel?

But it's cool, because they were saying, basically, that when you use regular Gemini and ask it a question, it tells you way too much information, you know? Whereas this one, it'll just be like, it'll just give you the answers, but very succinctly, it'd be like, "Oh, the moon's around Jupiter, these things," and then that's kind of it.

• 1:11:32Speaker 03

  I know.

• 1:11:32David Imel?

And it's just, I think it's just a nice little thing to be able to, if you're with your friends, looking up a simple question, and it just tells you.

• 1:11:39Speaker 03

No, let me lie to my friends in peace.

• 1:11:42David Imel?

Yeah, and we also have to talk about the price. We didn't talk about the price.

• 1:11:45Speaker 01

  $7.99.

• 1:11:46Speaker 03

  $7.99.

• 1:11:47David Imel?

So, $7.99, which is, has been quite contentious for people on the internet, because nothing is used to making the $350, $400 phone.

• 1:11:55Speaker 01

  Yeah, remind you of anything?

• 1:11:56David Imel?

  Uh...

• 1:11:57Speaker 01

I wonder where Carl P. used to work.

• 1:12:00David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:01Speaker 01

  Yeah, weird.

• 1:12:02David Imel?

Yeah, so, they're calling it their first flagship, that's the same price as the Pixel 9, that's the same price as the S25.

• 1:12:10Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:12:11David Imel?

It's basically the same, is the same price as iPhone 16.

• 1:12:14Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:12:15David Imel?

So it's basically, now they are competing directly.

• 1:12:17Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:12:18David Imel?

With like, all of these major manufacturers. They obviously have way more fun features and weird, like, the UI is really good.

• 1:12:25Speaker 03

And you could actually get kissed with this phone.

• 1:12:27David Imel?

  Or win rock, paper, scissors.

• 1:12:30Speaker 03

  Or win rock, paper, scissors.

• 1:12:31David Imel?

So, yeah, I think that's gonna be a big, uh, question mark, but, uh, yeah, and so the base price gets you 256 gigs of storage and 12 gigs of RAM, and then the 512 model, which is, I think, $100 more?

• 1:12:45Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:12:45David Imel?

Gives you 512 gigabytes of storage and 16 gigs of RAM, so it does give you more RAM.

• 1:12:50Speaker 01

It is interesting that, you know, they're playing in the flagship space, but they technically don't have a flagship chip, it's the Snapdragon 8S Gen 4, instead of the Snapdragon 8 Elite, which is in some of the phones you just talked about at that price, the Galaxy S25. Uh, how many people buying these phones care about the chipset?

• 1:13:09Speaker 01

Versus just deserve the better chipset at that price, you know? Like, I think a lot of people buy a car and don't really know about the engine in it, but once you spend over a certain amount, you deserve to get better parts and better build.

• 1:13:21David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:22Speaker 01

Whether you notice it or an enthusiast or not. And I think if you're buying a $799 phone, you probably should get a flagship chipset. But if you don't notice, then maybe it doesn't matter.

• 1:13:33David Imel?

Yeah, I think you're trading off that for a more interesting design and more interesting UI. Like, I would personally buy this over a regular S25 like any day of the week. Because I think the S25 is the most boring phone in history.

• 1:13:44Speaker 01

Probably also trading cameras. I haven't tested any of the cameras yet. That's a pure assumption. I'm assuming the Samsung cameras are better, but I don't know. Uh, you're also trading, uh, well, yeah, I guess there's the AI button and the essential space on the Nothing phone. Yeah, so it's just a more interesting phone.

• 1:13:58David Imel?

It's more interesting. You're trading design and some interesting features for...

• 1:14:02Speaker 01

But then you get the ugliest phone mankind has ever seen.

• 1:14:04David Imel?

No, the opposite. The Opposite. The Opposite.

• 1:14:07Speaker 01

Well, you know, there's a bunch of other things about this phone I haven't seen in person yet, and I'm looking forward to testing for the review. It appears to be a big, bright, nice, evenly bezelled AMOLED display, high refresh rate.

• 1:14:18David Imel?

  4,500 nits.

• 1:14:19Speaker 01

Crazy number. Like, I want to see it outside.

• 1:14:21David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:22Speaker 01

Uh, it appears to be a 5100-plus milliamp hour silicon carbon battery with fast charging. That's some flagship level stuff. I want to see how long that lasts. It is, of course, Nothing OS 3.5 on top of Android 15, and then it's going to get updated to, I think, 4.0 on Android 16. I have a lot to test.

• 1:14:39David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:39Speaker 01

I want to check out this phone. So expect the full review coming imminently. It is, it is for sure going to happen.

• 1:14:45David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:45Speaker 01

But, uh, yeah, those are, those are some first thoughts on Nothing Phone 3 and Nothing Headphone 1.

• 1:14:52Speaker 03

  It's gorge.

• 1:14:53David Imel?

  I think so.

• 1:14:54Speaker 01

Gorge as in gorge my eyes out?

• 1:14:57David Imel?

  As in Gorge Town University.

• 1:15:00Speaker 04

It is above the S25, but below the Pixel 9.

• 1:15:03Speaker 03

  It's striking and beautiful.

• 1:15:05David Imel?

I do think the Pixel 9 is...

• 1:15:06Speaker 01

  Striking, yes.

• 1:15:07Speaker 03

  It's, look, it's...

• 1:15:08David Imel?

As in punches you in the eye?

• 1:15:09Speaker 03

It's the Ionic 5N of phones.

• 1:15:11Speaker 01

  Oh, that's a take. That's... maybe Ionic 6.

• 1:15:15David Imel?

  Ah, the Porsche-looking one?

• 1:15:17Speaker 03

But no, but the Ionic 6 doesn't have the voxels in the same way.

• 1:15:19David Imel?

  It has a Porsche back.

• 1:15:20Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:15:21Speaker 01

It kind of does on the back.

• 1:15:23Speaker 03

Hmm, no, I'm sticking with 5.

• 1:15:24Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:15:25Speaker 03

  I'm sticking with 5.

• 1:15:26Speaker 01

  Alright.

• 1:15:26Speaker 03

  I like it.

• 1:15:26David Imel?

Speaking of sticking it with 5...

• 1:15:29Speaker 03

  What?

• 1:15:30David Imel?

I'm about to get five more points in trivia.

• 1:15:33Speaker 01

  Nice.

• 1:15:33Speaker 03

  Oh.

• 1:15:35David Imel?

  Damn.

• 1:15:37David Imel?

I thought you were off the rails there, but you brought it back nicely.

• 1:15:40Speaker 04

Okay. All right. This is a fill in the blank, so finish the sentence. Google Keep is available on Google Play for devices running blank and above. This is from the official announcement post way back in the day when it first came out.

• 1:15:56David Imel?

Oh, when it first came out. Wait, so this is it? So this is not current? No, no, this is not current. Can you say the sentence again?

• 1:16:00Speaker 04

Google Keep is available on Google Play for devices running blank and above. It's an operating system.

• 1:16:09David Imel?

What are you cooking here? Say the question again. I just did. No, say, read the whole thing again.

• 1:16:17Speaker 04

  Google Keep.

• 1:16:18David Imel?

No, the whole, like, finish this sentence. Is that what you said?

• 1:16:23Speaker 01

This is a fill in the blank question.

• 1:16:24Speaker 04

Yeah, it's a fill in the blank question.

• 1:16:25David Imel?

Do you say, "Finish this sentence"? You said that, right?

• 1:16:27Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 1:16:28David Imel?

  Oh, that is...

• 1:16:36David Imel?

  That's finish.

• 1:16:39David Imel?

I don't know what just happened. It's one of the worst dad jokes. I finished the sentence!

• 1:16:44Speaker 04

  Oh my god.

• 1:16:47David Imel?

We have to take a break.

• 1:16:50David Imel?

We have to. We'll be, we'll be back. We'll take a break. I know, that was good. That was terrible.

Support for the show comes from Jira by Atlassian. So AI is only as useful as the context it has to work from, but when that context is scattered across tools like threads and DMs, that means your team and your AI agents end up flying kind of blind. That's the problem Jira solves. What's the goal tied to your project? What got decided last week in Slack? Atlassian's teamwork graph pulls all of these pieces together from Jira, Confluence, Slack, GitHub, and more, so nothing falls through the cracks. With Jira, you can actually share that context with the AI agents you already use, like Claude, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot, assign them work directly, or connect your agents through MCP. Spend less time digging through endless links and DMs, less time chasing down what got decided and by who, and more time actually shipping.

• 1:18:56Speaker 04

Welcome back. Now we are going to do overhyped or underhyped. Again, to explain the rules, I have a list of things that I'm gonna run through.

• 1:19:04David Imel?

By the way, if you have alliteration for the title of this game.

• 1:19:07Speaker 04

  Yes, please let us know.

• 1:19:08David Imel?

It would be good. Boomer bust?

• 1:19:10Speaker 04

I feel like someone's used that before though.

• 1:19:12David Imel?

Yeah, it's sort of boomer core, you know? Hyper. Hyper knife.

• 1:19:15Speaker 04

  Anyway.

• 1:19:16David Imel?

  Hyper knife?

• 1:19:16Speaker 04

Yeah, if you have a name, let us know. But I'm gonna go through this list and you guys all have to tell me if the thing that I named.

• 1:19:23Speaker 03

Claude gave me an answer that was so close to hyper knife. I was like, no way.

• 1:19:31Speaker 04

You have to tell me if the thing I named is overhyped or underhyped.

• 1:19:35Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 1:19:35Speaker 04

Or perfectly hyped. You get one perfectly hyped to use on this list.

• 1:19:39David Imel?

  There we go.

• 1:19:40Speaker 04

  All right.

• 1:19:40Speaker 03

  Only one?

• 1:19:41Speaker 04

  Only one.

• 1:19:42Speaker 03

  All right.

• 1:19:42Speaker 04

  First thing, Tyrese Halliburton.

• 1:19:45Speaker 03

  Underhyped.

• 1:19:46David Imel?

How am I supposed to know?

• 1:19:47Speaker 03

  Underhyped.

• 1:19:48Speaker 04

We explained it to you last week.

• 1:19:49Speaker 03

  He's Waluigi.

• 1:19:50David Imel?

Is he the guy that broke his leg?

• 1:19:51Speaker 03

Yeah. Towards the killer. Look, look, look, look. He, I'm gonna just make this decision for you guys. There is no way someone gets voted most underrated or overrated player in the NBA. And then balls out all the way till June. Like that is it.

• 1:20:08Speaker 04

  Till game seven.

• 1:20:09Speaker 03

  By definition, underhyped.

• 1:20:12David Imel?

Generationally clutch run. We're gonna be telling our grandkids about how many. But the fact that you guys are all saying this makes him perfectly hyped, right?

• 1:20:19Speaker 03

  No, no, no, no, no.

• 1:20:20Speaker 04

  I don't know.

• 1:20:21Speaker 03

He literally won a like poll of NBA players for being the most overrated player. Like everyone was like, everyone thinks this guy is good, he's trash. And then he just showed them all. So I think he has to be given, I love you Tyrese.

• 1:20:34David Imel?

  I'm with him.

• 1:20:35Speaker 03

Take me to Vegas with you.

• 1:20:36David Imel?

What does that have to do with technology?

• 1:20:38Speaker 04

It doesn't, it's just so perfectly in this segment that I had to start it off first.

• 1:20:42David Imel?

I'm just gonna agree with you guys, cuz I don't know any better.

• 1:20:45Speaker 04

  Alright, nice, so he's underhyped.

• 1:20:46David Imel?

  Underhyped.

• 1:20:47Speaker 04

  Alright.

• 1:20:48David Imel?

  Tyree?

• 1:20:49Speaker 03

  Is that the thing?

• 1:20:51David Imel?

  Oh, uh.

• 1:20:51Speaker 04

  What? No, that's Kyrie.

• 1:20:54David Imel?

Oh, that's Tyree, sorry. Okay, I have a.

• 1:20:57Speaker 03

  Kyrie!

• 1:20:59David Imel?

  What a reference, though.

• 1:21:01Speaker 04

That's how often we do that in the studio.

• 1:21:04Speaker 03

RDC World One, come on the pod.

• 1:21:06Speaker 04

Uh, Nintendo Switch 2, overhyped or underhyped or perfectly hyped?

• 1:21:10David Imel?

  Unbelievably hot take.

• 1:21:11Speaker 04

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:21:12Speaker 03

  Oh, no.

• 1:21:13David Imel?

  I kinda think it's overhyped.

• 1:21:15Speaker 01

No, I agree. Actually, my review's gonna come out, my review will be out by the time this podcast is out.

• 1:21:19David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:19Speaker 04

  Guess who hyped it?

• 1:21:20Speaker 01

And I kinda, no, I kind of agree. The, the, what is the beginning of an essay called? The thesis. The thesis of my review is, the Switch 2 and my review of it don't matter. It's just the games.

• 1:21:34David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:35Speaker 01

You're just here to play games.

• 1:21:36David Imel?

  Welcome Nintendo.

• 1:21:36Speaker 01

What game do you wanna play? Get the console that plays that game. Can the console play the game? Great. Can the console not play the game? Don't get it. Get the one that plays the game you care about.

• 1:21:44David Imel?

  Yep.

• 1:21:45Speaker 01

I wanna play Mario. Alright, get a Switch.

• 1:21:47David Imel?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:21:48Speaker 01

  The end.

• 1:21:48David Imel?

Yeah, I, so, I'm coming at it from a person who had a Switch OLED. And I feel like, coming from a Switch OLED, it feels really overhyped. Because I feel like the screen is like,

• 1:21:57Speaker 01

  Also true, yeah.

• 1:21:57David Imel?

Not even as good. The bezels, the bezels are way bigger.

• 1:22:01Speaker 01

I am such a higher refresh rate.

• 1:22:04David Imel?

  Diva?

• 1:22:05Speaker 01

  Loser.

• 1:22:07Speaker 01

I, I am so torn on the screen, like OLED looks better, obviously.

• 1:22:11David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:22:12Speaker 01

But 120 Hz also to my eye, for the few games and the few times that I can see it, also looks great.

• 1:22:18David Imel?

I've just never been like, oh, I want Mario to be 120 Hz.

• 1:22:21Speaker 01

  That's fair.

• 1:22:21David Imel?

Like, I, it does look amazing on Mario Kart.

• 1:22:24Speaker 01

Most of the games are 60 anyway.

• 1:22:25David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:22:26Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:22:26David Imel?

The new Mario Kart looks like it's an Unreal Engine game, and I think that looks great. I think it's cool. I think it's kind of

• 1:22:33Speaker 03

  So cool.

• 1:22:33David Imel?

Weird. No, it's just, it's a little bit like, weird to see a Nintendo game in such like, high fidelity and like, with high refresh rate and all this stuff. Um, I mean, it's, it's fantastic. So, I mean, I don't know, I think. There's all been all these articles coming out from very reputable people who do very thorough reputable tests. So they are smarter than me in this in this category. And they're saying like, oh, all of the Switch 2 graphics updates are basically remasters and the games look so much better and blah, blah, blah. And I I downloaded the the the graphics update for Breath of the Wild.

• 1:23:08Speaker 01

  Me too.

• 1:23:09David Imel?

Started playing it and I'm like, yeah.

• 1:23:12Speaker 01

  Yeah, I didn't notice it.

• 1:23:13David Imel?

  I didn't, you know?

• 1:23:15Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:23:15David Imel?

It's like, oh, the draw distance of the I'm like, OK. Like, this has never been a thing.

• 1:23:20Speaker 01

That's every console, though. Like, the PS5 came out and they were like, look at this ray tracing.

• 1:23:24David Imel?

And I would I would. That was even worse.

• 1:23:26Speaker 01

I would need a side by side to notice.

• 1:23:27David Imel?

But Nintendo is the last possible company that this should matter to people about, you know what I mean?

• 1:23:32Speaker 01

  It's overrated.

• 1:23:33David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:34Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:23:34David Imel?

  I think it's a little over.

• 1:23:35Speaker 01

Bigger screen, better chip, play more games.

• 1:23:38David Imel?

I think for a lot of people, the Switch 2 is like the better console because it has a lot of better features and as, you know, it's a bigger screen. So you can play it with your kid and you can all see it easier. And it's like, good, you know, it's good. It's a it's a very.

• 1:23:49Speaker 03

Can it play Switch 1 games?

• 1:23:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:23:51David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:51Speaker 03

  All right, great.

• 1:23:52Speaker 01

So what do we what was yours, Alice?

• 1:23:54Speaker 03

Uh, dude, I think I've played any Switch one or two, like maybe one time. I literally wouldn't.

• 1:24:01Speaker 01

  But you've seen the hype.

• 1:24:02Speaker 03

  I've seen the hype.

• 1:24:03David Imel?

The hype has been unbelievable and it's been all me.

• 1:24:06Speaker 03

Nintendo is just like a vehicle for this, like, this very indescribable feeling that's somewhere between. It's like now, it's like this feeling that's like somewhere between like holding a newborn puppy and like and like building a house made of twigs and gingerbread at the same time. I don't know, like, and and like, I think that was because the only Nintendo, like, I had a Game Boy or whatever, but like, the Wii. Yeah. Was like a huge part of my childhood.

• 1:24:33Speaker 01

  Same.

• 1:24:33Speaker 03

And that thing was just like dripping in sauce, like.

• 1:24:36David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:36Speaker 03

Every sound it made, every visual cue.

• 1:24:39Speaker 01

You can hear it without even us playing it. You can hear it.

• 1:24:42Speaker 03

You wanted to leave it open on your TV all day.

• 1:24:46David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:46Speaker 03

  And.

• 1:24:46David Imel?

  Just have the sounds playing.

• 1:24:48Speaker 03

To me, when I when I picked up a Switch 1 for the first time and the background was gray and there was no music and I was just like, what?

• 1:24:56David Imel?

Yeah, but the clicking noises are great.

• 1:24:58Speaker 03

Hmm. Come on, man. You know that's not what I'm talking about.

• 1:25:02David Imel?

They were better on the Switch one.

• 1:25:04Speaker 03

So, yeah, I'm gonna go ahead and say, say overhyped, but I also, I don't really game like that. I'm not, I'm not the person to.

• 1:25:11David Imel?

Yeah, I'm agreeing. I, I saw the hype go so far as one of the podcasts I listened to literally named one of their episodes Nintendo Switch two, Nintendo Switch two, Nintendo Switch. What losers. Insane, like the hype was crazy.

• 1:25:24Speaker 03

  They probably have no talent.

• 1:25:25David Imel?

Yeah, it's one of those basic.

• 1:25:27Speaker 03

I, I know, I don't want to use my appropriately hyped yet because I feel like I might need it later, but I do want to say like, I don't, I don't think anything that anyone that, sorry. I don't think anything that everyone likes is overhyped. You know, if everyone likes, everyone's happy, great. Everyone's stoked. Why do we have to come in and rain on everyone's?

• 1:25:49David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:25:50Speaker 04

  Fair take.

• 1:25:50David Imel?

  Yeah, which is like basically.

• 1:25:53Speaker 03

But also if you use an Android phone, you're a loser.

• 1:25:56David Imel?

No, that basically describes the Nintendo Switch two, right? Cause there's so much stuff online that's so negative about like, oh, it says it's 120, but it's technically this and blah, blah, blah.

• 1:26:05Speaker 03

  It's like, are people happy?

• 1:26:07David Imel?

But this is again, it's like the whole Nintendo ethos is just like, it's about the games, it's about the joy, it's about the like.

• 1:26:13Speaker 04

I don't know, man, I can really tell the frames per second when I'm playing Animal Crossing. It's very obvious.

• 1:26:19Speaker 03

  Yeah. Debt simulator 2025.

• 1:26:22David Imel?

So I don't know, yeah, I'm gonna say overhyped and uh, we contributed to that. I still, I'm not upset that I bought it.

• 1:26:30Speaker 04

You were Nintendo Switch two for like three weeks running.

• 1:26:33Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:26:33David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:26:34Speaker 03

But you never said it was good.

• 1:26:35Speaker 04

  That's true.

• 1:26:35David Imel?

That's true. I, I don't think it's bad. This is the, this is the other thing.

• 1:26:39Speaker 03

  Right, right, right.

• 1:26:40David Imel?

I just like, I think that the screen's a little bit of a downgrade, the bezels are a little big, but that's like my only complaint. And I don't think it's bad and they had to make something else and they weren't gonna, you know, Nintendo founded winning formula and they made it better and that's about it.

• 1:26:56Speaker 03

Yeah. Wait, before you read the next one, I don't think you're gonna be able to cut out what I said earlier.

• 1:27:01Speaker 04

  Definitely not going to.

• 1:27:02Speaker 03

So I didn't mean it. It was a joke.

• 1:27:04Speaker 04

  But speaking of Android.

• 1:27:06Speaker 03

  I love my Android friends.

• 1:27:08Speaker 04

The next one on the list.

• 1:27:09Speaker 03

Coworkers, I really did not mean that one, guys.

• 1:27:11David Imel?

And again, my overhyped only means that the level of hype that was absolutely insane that was driven by us. I'm just gonna throw us under the bus as many times as possible.

• 1:27:22Speaker 03

  Do it. We deserve it.

• 1:27:25Speaker 04

I think this was perfectly hyped. This is what I would have used my perfectly hyped.

• 1:27:28David Imel?

That's fair, because everyone that bought it is happy with it.

• 1:27:31Speaker 04

  Exactly.

• 1:27:31David Imel?

  So I guess that's true.

• 1:27:32Speaker 04

There was enough stock. Everyone who wanted one basically got one. There weren't lines out the door. And still, they sold like three or four million in the first week, or something like that. Like, it was something crazy, so.

• 1:27:41David Imel?

I think the only thing is that I really miss Nintendo releasing a new console, and there's a completely new input paradigm. Like, the DS having the second screen that was touched, the Wii having the motion controls.

• 1:27:51Speaker 04

  What are you talking about?

• 1:27:52David Imel?

  The magnets.

• 1:27:52Speaker 04

The magnets. Anyway, next up, Android tablets.

• 1:27:59Speaker 04

  Overhyped, underhyped, or perfectly hyped?

• 1:28:04Speaker 01

Android tablets have little to no hype most of the time from most people.

• 1:28:08David Imel?

  Which is appropriate.

• 1:28:09Speaker 01

And I think that they don't deserve any more than they have. So I'm going with exactly correctly hyped.

• 1:28:18David Imel?

I'm going exactly correctly hyped, too.

• 1:28:20Speaker 03

  I'll bite.

• 1:28:21Speaker 04

Okay, all on one. Got rid of those quick.

• 1:28:24Speaker 03

  Underhyped.

• 1:28:25Speaker 04

  Okay, perfect. You're going underhyped.

• 1:28:26Speaker 03

Going underhyped. Because as the world's biggest hater of Android and Android devices.

• 1:28:34David Imel?

You wanted to wipe that out of the podcast two minutes ago.

• 1:28:37Speaker 03

Yeah, well, I was rude. I hate Android devices, not the blessed souls who are forced to use them.

• 1:28:44Speaker 03

  You know, but.

• 1:28:46Speaker 04

I can't wait till you fall in love with Android in like six years. I'm gonna play all these back for you.

• 1:28:50Speaker 03

Please do, man. And then, no.

• 1:28:55Speaker 04

  And then we'll tweet it.

• 1:28:55Speaker 03

Well, here's the deal. Here's the deal. Here's the deal with Android tablets. The thing that is really cool about Android is that

• 1:29:02Speaker 03

every app ever that could possibly be conceived has already been written and deployed on the Google Play Store. So as like, a daily driver, this is my cellphone operating system, not a fan. As I have a very specific use case that involves a wireless network and some function I need to perform, and it needs to fit in a small box, and I know it needs to be reliable, Android works really well. Which is why I have a big stack of Android phones in my apartment for when I need to run a small media server that does not need a lot of bandwidth, for when I need to set up an NDI camera rig at a gig, for when I, you know, for all sorts of like various computery things. They're super useful for that. And so.

• 1:29:47Speaker 03

As I've been seeing you with your Galaxy A10 Ultra tab?

• 1:29:54Speaker 04

  S10 Ultra.

• 1:29:56Speaker 03

S10 Ultra, thank you. As I've been seeing you with your tab, get around your life and using it, every time I see you, I think, that's pretty sweet. And it looks like it works really well, except for the fact that we couldn't figure out how to mute it.

• 1:30:09Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:30:09Speaker 03

  Last episode. That was pretty.

• 1:30:10Speaker 04

I literally had to put on dude out this third.

• 1:30:12Speaker 03

Yeah, but other than that, I, I, I, so this is all to say that if you happen to get an Android tab in your life, and you can think of some random thing that you don't want to sacrifice a computer for, probably is pretty sweet. Asterisk, the Android tab I have floating around my life is a Huawei Mapad Pro, which is so locked down.

• 1:30:35Speaker 04

  Yeah, it's hard.

• 1:30:36Speaker 03

It might as well be in a maximum security prison.

• 1:30:39Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:30:39Speaker 03

So, not for me, but for you, maybe.

• 1:30:42David Imel?

I'm just kind of a tablet hater in general.

• 1:30:44Speaker 04

Perfect, because this next one is iPads.

• 1:30:47David Imel?

  Overhyped.

• 1:30:48Speaker 03

Overhyped? Exactly hyped, I'm using it.

• 1:30:52David Imel?

  I think it's overhyped.

• 1:30:54Speaker 03

  Exactly.

• 1:30:54David Imel?

  I do not understand. I'm like, it's a.

• 1:30:58Speaker 01

I think if you asked me this before iPadOS 26, I would have had a different answer, but I think now.

• 1:31:04David Imel?

  The beta's convinced.

• 1:31:04Speaker 01

It's a laptop now. The beta has convinced me. Is it overhyped still? It's possible it may still be overhyped. I don't know. I need to, I think I have to stick with overhyped.

• 1:31:14David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:31:15Speaker 01

But I, I'm gonna give iPadOS 26 a chance for it to be perfectly hyped.

• 1:31:19David Imel?

The only thing 99% of people do with their tablets is like watch Netflix.

• 1:31:24Speaker 01

Oh yeah, for 99% of people, overhyped. For 1% of people, maybe perfectly hyped, maybe underhyped.

• 1:31:30David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:31:30Speaker 01

  To be determined.

• 1:31:31David Imel?

No, for sure. I mean, there's digital artists that use them and it's really great for them.

• 1:31:35Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:31:35David Imel?

And it's probably underhyped in their eyes. But for the 99%, that Netflix could be had anywhere else.

• 1:31:41Speaker 03

Yeah. Don't buy the pro. Don't buy the pro for the Netflix. Guys, I did the most embarrassing thing happen to me. I'm like, trying to see if I could even find the picture, but iPad related. I was like on a FaceTime call with someone, which is something I really like the iPad for, because its webcam is better than the one in my $6,000 MacBook somehow. Noticeably better. Like when I call people on my laptop, they're like, ew.

• 1:32:06Speaker 03

Anyway, they were like, what are you wearing to this thing tonight? And I was like, let me just show you. And I walk into a mirror and flip the camera around. And everyone just broke out laughing at like me holding my iPad. I totally forgot.

• 1:32:22Speaker 03

  I have this.

• 1:32:23Speaker 01

  What do you think, guys?

• 1:32:24Speaker 03

Yeah, that was literally it. And like, I have this screenshot somewhere that they sent me. I'm gonna have to find it anywhere.

• 1:32:31Speaker 01

  That's so good.

• 1:32:31David Imel?

  Okay.

• 1:32:33Speaker 04

How are we feeling? We want one or two more?

• 1:32:35Speaker 03

I have one more thing I could say about iPads. Which is, I lost my Apple pencil on whatever our last work shoot, travel shoot was.

• 1:32:42Speaker 01

  Very easy to do.

• 1:32:44Speaker 03

I literally feel like a part of me died. I didn't sound like I was using the Apple pencil every day. But like, every time it's not, I open my iPad and it's not sitting on top. I'm just like.

• 1:32:53Speaker 04

  There goes a hundred dollars.

• 1:32:56Speaker 03

Sketching or handwriting. Yeah, well, I'm a, I'm a diehard scribbler. I think scribble is like, one of the coolest things Apple's ever released. It's not the coolest. The coolest is standby mode on the iPhone. Maintain that.

• 1:33:07Speaker 01

  Stand by me.

• 1:33:08Speaker 03

  But, uh, anyway.

• 1:33:10Speaker 01

  What about the Math Notes?

• 1:33:12Speaker 03

That's up there. But Math Notes is only empowered by scribble.

• 1:33:16Speaker 01

  Cool.

• 1:33:21Speaker 04

  Wow. All right. Next up.

• 1:33:23Speaker 03

  Get wrecked.

• 1:33:24Speaker 04

Last one? Do we want to make this the last one?

• 1:33:26Speaker 01

  One or two more, yeah.

• 1:33:27Speaker 04

  Smartwatches.

• 1:33:31Speaker 04

  The silence.

• 1:33:32Speaker 01

In the interest of being click?

• 1:33:34Speaker 04

  Exactly.

• 1:33:35Speaker 03

That's why I. I saw a selfie I took a little bit ago where you could see my Apple Watch Ultra. And I have not worn it since. So I'm having a little bit of a moment with smartwatches at the moment. I was just like, God, my whole wrist.

• 1:33:49Speaker 01

I'm gonna, I'm gonna go overhyped because.

• 1:33:53Speaker 01

I'm gonna go overhyped because I think that they may be extinct in under a decade.

• 1:33:58David Imel?

  Ooh, hot take.

• 1:34:00Speaker 04

  That is a hot take.

• 1:34:01Speaker 01

There's a chance that the face wearables completely eliminate.

• 1:34:06David Imel?

Do you want to run more wearables?

• 1:34:09Speaker 04

I would run with smart glasses.

• 1:34:10Speaker 01

But that's not a smart watch. If you just don't want a band to wear on your wrist to like

• 1:34:13David Imel?

  I mean.

• 1:34:14Speaker 01

Heart, fitness track, then do that.

• 1:34:15David Imel?

It feels more like to me, like, smart watches used to be like, wow, I can use, I can do my computer on my wrist now. But now it's more like, they're just fitness devices. Like, pretty much all smart watches are.

• 1:34:24Speaker 01

Exactly. So I would rather have smart glasses and a Fitbit than a huge screen on my wrist. You know?

• 1:34:30David Imel?

  And a real watch?

• 1:34:32Speaker 01

Uh, that's a, you know, some people might do a real watch.

• 1:34:34David Imel?

So you would never watch at all?

• 1:34:35Speaker 01

  Probably not.

• 1:34:36David Imel?

  Really?

• 1:34:37Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:34:37David Imel?

What about when you need it all the time?

• 1:34:38Speaker 01

Yeah, I'll just check my phone.

• 1:34:40David Imel?

  Yeah, but it's annoying.

• 1:34:41Speaker 04

  Damn.

• 1:34:42David Imel?

And then you look like a...

• 1:34:43Speaker 01

I'll just check it on my glasses.

• 1:34:45David Imel?

  Oh.

• 1:34:46Speaker 01

I'll just do that. I'll just do the nod that the Google Glass thing made.

• 1:34:51Speaker 01

  340? Or whatever.

• 1:34:53David Imel?

No, wait. Wait, this is crazy. So I saw, I was at the Nothing event, and someone was, they have one of those neck mounts with a MagSafe thing. So they were recording a POV with their phone on the neck mount. And then they had the even reality glasses that have like two screens in it.

• 1:35:10Speaker 04

  No.

• 1:35:10David Imel?

And they were like, they were doing this, and the whole time, I'm not joking, the whole time they're like doing this with their hands, and they're just like reading their script while staring blankly ahead. And I was like, wow.

• 1:35:22Speaker 04

Next level, man. He's locked in. He's locked in.

• 1:35:25David Imel?

  The future.

• 1:35:26Speaker 01

  That dude was creating.

• 1:35:27David Imel?

  Dude, he was contenting.

• 1:35:29Speaker 01

  He was content creating.

• 1:35:30Speaker 04

  Contenting.

• 1:35:31David Imel?

I think your phone can do pretty much everything. It's always kind of weird when it's like, oh, my phone has dual band GPS for Strava, but my watch doesn't. I, I do.

• 1:35:41Speaker 04

  The Ultra does, doesn't it?

• 1:35:42David Imel?

The, the Ultra does. I do prefer to like not have to run with a phone, and it's cool that it can do the fitness stuff without it. It's just that for what smart watches were originally invented for, which was to like get notifications on your watch, I don't want that at all.

• 1:35:57Speaker 04

  So it's turned off.

• 1:35:59David Imel?

Yeah, but then why even wear a smart watch?

• 1:36:01Speaker 04

  For fitness.

• 1:36:01Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 1:36:02David Imel?

Yeah, but regular watches are cooler.

• 1:36:04Speaker 04

  Overhyped.

• 1:36:04Speaker 01

  This is true.

• 1:36:05Speaker 04

  You're agreeing with me.

• 1:36:08Speaker 04

I mean, Ellis has found the picture.

• 1:36:10Speaker 03

  I found the picture.

• 1:36:11Speaker 04

I have the size of your torso.

• 1:36:12Speaker 03

  It's so funny.

• 1:36:13Speaker 04

  You're like a goat.

• 1:36:14Speaker 03

My internet went full potato at the same moment, too. So it's like a blurry.

• 1:36:19Speaker 04

  What are you wearing?

• 1:36:19David Imel?

  Kill me in my sleep.

• 1:36:21Speaker 03

This is going in the show notes for audio listeners.

• 1:36:24Speaker 04

Oh, my God. Okay, David, overhyped or underhyped?

• 1:36:26David Imel?

  Overhyped.

• 1:36:27Speaker 04

  Ellis?

• 1:36:28Speaker 03

  I, dude, I mean, overhyped. I don't know. I'm having a moment, but they're nice.

• 1:36:34Speaker 04

  Okay, that's fair. Last one.

• 1:36:36David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:36:36Speaker 04

  Last one. Specifically for Marquez.

• 1:36:38Speaker 03

  Specifically for Marquez.

• 1:36:39Speaker 04

But I want to hear you guys. Actually, you guys go first and Marquez will answer last.

• 1:36:42Speaker 03

Okay, yeah, so he can judge us.

• 1:36:43David Imel?

  Tyree Johnson, whatever.

• 1:36:47David Imel?

  Continue.

• 1:36:49Speaker 03

  Please, please, Carrie, Carrie.

• 1:36:54Speaker 04

  Hybrid cars.

• 1:36:55David Imel?

  Ooh. Hybrids?

• 1:36:56Speaker 03

  Ooh.

• 1:36:58Speaker 03

  Mm.

• 1:36:58Speaker 04

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:36:59Speaker 03

  Mm.

• 1:36:59Speaker 04

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:37:00Speaker 03

  Mm.

• 1:37:01Speaker 04

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:37:03Speaker 03

Good or bad would be an easy thing for me to answer. Overhyped. I don't know how other people feel about hybrid cars.

• 1:37:08David Imel?

Like, really? Actually, you, like, plug-in hybrids or specifically plug-in hybrids?

• 1:37:13Speaker 04

  I, I don't know the difference.

• 1:37:14David Imel?

  Whatever you want.

• 1:37:15Speaker 04

  However, you interpreted that.

• 1:37:16David Imel?

  I have mine too.

• 1:37:16Speaker 04

  Go for it.

• 1:37:18David Imel?

I think plug-in hybrids are underhyped.

• 1:37:22Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 1:37:23David Imel?

Because if you can get like 50 miles, and most people don't drive that far in a day from the suburbs or wherever they are. And they can just plug in, that's like amazing. And then when you need the extra gas, you have it. I still would like the world to transition completely to full EV. So obviously, you know, I don't necessarily want hybrid to be the main thing. It does seem like more of a realistic thing that's going to sell to more customers because it's cheaper as well. So there's that. So I think it is underhyped.

• 1:37:54Speaker 04

  Okay, Ellis?

• 1:37:56Speaker 03

Yesterday, I hung out with a hybrid. And its name was Panamera 4E, 4SE Hybrid. 4S space E hyphen hybrid.

• 1:38:08David Imel?

  I know you have 1000X.

• 1:38:10Speaker 03

Yeah. And, and I, what was so cool about it to me is that it, on the electric motor exclusively, it had 40 miles of range, like David said. So I don't believe it's a plug-in hybrid. I can't quite remember, but you can do your commute on the battery. And then do everything else you need to do on the gas motor. And yeah, when I think about not there's realistically almost all.

• 1:38:35Speaker 01

I can't believe you said gas.

• 1:38:36Speaker 03

  I'm gonna take, I'm gonna.

• 1:38:37Speaker 01

Oh my God, I'm gonna yell at you so hard.

• 1:38:38Speaker 03

  As opposed to.

• 1:38:40Speaker 01

  Just the engine.

• 1:38:41David Imel?

  They call them engines.

• 1:38:42Speaker 03

  Oh, it's, it's like, it's like, it's like calling it a, yeah, it's a gas, well, it's like, it's like.

• 1:38:46Speaker 01

I was being a jerk because someone yelled at me once years ago for calling it an.

• 1:38:50Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:38:50Speaker 01

  Engine in an electric car.

• 1:38:52Speaker 03

Well, what are you talking about? I am technically replacing Andrew this week, who does call it ball golf. So, you know, maybe, anyway, maybe.

• 1:39:00David Imel?

  Because of frisbee golf. Disco.

• 1:39:06Speaker 03

Okay, all right. Uh, this, well, thanks for listening to the Pedantic Podcast. I, I like hybrids. I like the idea that people who have bad complaints about EVs get, you know, shown that, oh, you can still have a really high mileage car that goes really, really fast and.

• 1:39:23Speaker 01

  So you're also saying underhyped?

• 1:39:25Speaker 03

I mean, I guess, but I don't think there's anyone out here being like, hybrids suck. You know, like, I don't.

• 1:39:31Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:39:31Speaker 03

  I don't know.

• 1:39:32Speaker 01

I mean, the counterpoint of that is that we want the world to transition to fully electric eventually.

• 1:39:36Speaker 03

Well, yeah, but there are, we, it's more than just the cars, you know?

• 1:39:40Speaker 01

Okay, I'm glad, so to summarize.

• 1:39:42Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah, you're here.

• 1:39:42Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:39:43David Imel?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:39:45Speaker 01

Cause I have, I, I think it's a great way to end it. I have a summary of both of your points. I am in the underhyped category as well for hybrids.

• 1:39:52Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 1:39:53Speaker 01

And I've been able, I've thought about this a lot recently and, you know, gas cars have come a long way. We've had gas cars for many, many years and there are true fans of gas cars. So Ellis, you say, why would anyone say hybrids suck? Ask sports car fans, they are saying that exactly.

• 1:40:07Speaker 03

  Really?

• 1:40:08Speaker 01

Yeah, the, the nine 11 is a hybrid and everyone's, oh, hybrid, hybrids suck.

• 1:40:11Speaker 03

Don't they know that Formula One cars are hybrids?

• 1:40:14Speaker 01

They do, but that's why I'm saying underrated because I think that it's clear that the electric motor, specifically the motor, is a superior form of propulsion.

• 1:40:26Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:40:27Speaker 01

Period. It's more efficient, more torque, more responsive, better traction control. Everything about the electric motor is better.

• 1:40:34Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:40:34Speaker 01

Which I have separated out from the electric car because battery technology is still, has a long way to go.

• 1:40:41Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 1:40:42Speaker 01

So when you say electric car today, that implies electric motors, which are great, and a massive battery, which adds 1,200 pounds to your car, which is not great.

• 1:40:51Speaker 03

  Right.

• 1:40:52Speaker 01

So. In this world where we want to get to all cars eventually having this superior electric motor,

• 1:41:01Speaker 01

you know, some of them can be full battery electric, some of them can be hybrid, some of them can do even what Porsche has done with the 911 Carrera 4 GTS, which I just reviewed, which is they just put electric motors in little parts of the car where it improves the overall gas engine experience. So in that car, the electric motor doesn't drive the wheels ever. The electric motor sits in the turbo to keep it constantly spooled up so that the gas engine is more responsive. And they have one in the gearbox as well. Wow, that's very smart. Yeah, in general, I think people, when they think of hybrids, they think of, oh, Prius, you know, very tame, you know, I get better gas mileage. The engine turns off when I stop and I can get 20 miles of electric.

• 1:41:45Speaker 01

And that's all true and that's great. But I think in terms of moving society from gas cars to electric cars, the electric motor through hybrids is moving us, is ushering us to that era. So I am saying, yes, exactly. Battery technology will have to improve until we get to the all-electric world of the future. Cool.

• 1:42:10Speaker 03

  Counterpoint.

• 1:42:12Speaker 03

I think the way we get sports car heads hooked on electric motors.

• 1:42:18Speaker 03

Hear me out. Race cars drive on tracks. The cool part about a track is that we know where the race car is going to go before it goes there. There's some leeway. It's wide. But for the most part, we know in the future, all the possible places that race car could go.

• 1:42:37Speaker 01

If it's NASCAR, it's to the left.

• 1:42:39Speaker 03

Therefore, hear me out, take the battery out of the car. No battery, just motor. Put a bumper stop, a bumper car style overhang, electrified overhang.

• 1:42:51David Imel?

  Whoa.

• 1:42:52Speaker 03

With a brush over the entire track. All of a sudden, you have the same super powerful car.

• 1:42:58David Imel?

  Whoa.

• 1:42:59Speaker 03

You're taking 3,000 pounds off the weight and full voltage the entire time. That thing would just be a nonstop kick in the pants.

• 1:43:09Speaker 01

That would be pretty incredible. I don't know, logistically, if all of the cars doing that and getting them tangled as they overlap each other.

• 1:43:18Speaker 03

No, no, no, no. You're, so you're, you're picturing like a street car with like the, the, the single like, um.

• 1:43:24Speaker 01

  Wire?

• 1:43:25Speaker 03

Single wire and then the hoop thing.

• 1:43:26Speaker 01

  I am.

• 1:43:27Speaker 03

I'm talking about a bumper car.

• 1:43:28Speaker 01

  Like a roof.

• 1:43:28Speaker 03

Where you have an awning, the, cause bumper cars don't even have the luxury of a racetrack. The bumper cars can move 360 degrees wherever they want and they still have to be electrified.

• 1:43:38Speaker 01

  Gotcha.

• 1:43:39Speaker 03

So that's what, you see, so you would have the aerodynamic struggle of having a literal mast.

• 1:43:45Speaker 03

Every, and I also not quite sure how you would do with elevation changes in the racetrack, but that's for engineers to figure out.

• 1:43:51Speaker 01

  Telescoping mast?

• 1:43:52Speaker 03

So, yeah, hybrids. In fact, because of this great idea, hybrids, overhyped, putting a ceiling over every road in America.

• 1:44:03Speaker 03

  Under hyped.

• 1:44:04Speaker 01

  Think about it.

• 1:44:05Speaker 03

Yeah. I don't say anything about inductive charging roads.

• 1:44:08David Imel?

  Solar fuck.

• 1:44:10Speaker 03

  Freaking roadway.

• 1:44:13Speaker 03

All right. On that note, um, I think the heat is finally getting to us.

• 1:44:16David Imel?

  Is on.

• 1:44:17Speaker 03

  The heat is on.

• 1:44:18Speaker 01

You know what else is on? Trivia time.

• 1:44:21Speaker 03

  Let's do it.

• 1:44:23Speaker 03

Trivia, dude. Quick update on the score. Marquez.

• 1:44:30Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:44:30Speaker 03

  27. From under the table while he grabs his marker that he just hit the mic with. David, 30.

• 1:44:38David Imel?

  The lady.

• 1:44:39Speaker 04

  Andrew slash Ellis.

• 1:44:41Speaker 03

  Eight.

• 1:44:41Speaker 04

  Seventeen.

• 1:44:42Speaker 03

Do my points go to Andrew this week?

• 1:44:44Speaker 04

Yes, they do, except for the one that you did. I'll come up with a different one for you.

• 1:44:48Speaker 03

  You answer that one.

• 1:44:49Speaker 04

Okay, wait, I know the answer.

• 1:44:52Speaker 03

  Right.

• 1:44:52Speaker 01

  Andrew needs the points.

• 1:44:55Speaker 03

All right, all right, all right. Question number one, guys. Which of the following chart topping musical acts have had their logo on an F1 car during a Grand Prix race? Hit it, Adam. A. Smash Mouth. B. BTS. C. ABBA. Or D. U2. Just kidding, Coldplay.

• 1:45:17David Imel?

  What's the difference?

• 1:45:18Speaker 03

Are we gonna leave that? No, yeah. That is in the episode?

• 1:45:21Speaker 04

  I think so.

• 1:45:21Speaker 03

I think it was during the first break.

• 1:45:23Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:45:23Speaker 03

I think we had a, so none of you know this, we had a full 10, 15 minute argument.

• 1:45:28Speaker 04

  Before we started recording.

• 1:45:29Speaker 03

Before we started recording about if U2 and Coldplay were similar bands. I am on team no, and if you agree with me, tell me in the comments.

• 1:45:37David Imel?

You literally discovered through the process that they are the same band.

• 1:45:40Speaker 03

They are not the same band.

• 1:45:42Speaker 04

Flip 'em and read, what do we got?

• 1:45:43Speaker 03

  All right.

• 1:45:44Speaker 01

I think it had, I put B, I think it has to be BTS. They are so corporate, they have so many Samsung and LG collaborations, it has to be BTS.

• 1:45:53Speaker 04

  David, what'd you say?

• 1:45:54David Imel?

  I also put B.

• 1:45:55Speaker 03

  Yeah, so that's awesome.

• 1:45:56David Imel?

  It's Coldplay, isn't it?

• 1:45:57Speaker 03

  Because.

• 1:45:58David Imel?

  It's Coldplay.

• 1:46:00Speaker 03

That, one of our coworkers suggested that as an answer to this question. And I was like, I think that'd be really sweet. And then they were like, no, no, no, actually, we shouldn't use that. I think it's gonna be way too obvious and like, no one will guess that. And I was like.

• 1:46:13Speaker 04

  BTS?

• 1:46:14Speaker 03

  The correct answer.

• 1:46:15David Imel?

  Coldplay.

• 1:46:16Speaker 03

  Is.

• 1:46:16David Imel?

  D. Oh.

• 1:46:19Speaker 03

  C.

• 1:46:20Speaker 04

  Which is what band?

• 1:46:20Speaker 03

ABBA. During the 1981 San Marino Grand Prix, Carl Edvard Tommy Slimborgad was like, if I just put the most famous thing Sweden has ever produced on my car, maybe someone will try to get a sponsorship next time. Anyway, yeah, answer was ABBA, San Marino Grand Prix, 1981.

• 1:46:38Speaker 04

  Nice.

• 1:46:39Speaker 03

If Andrew was here, he probably would have known that.

• 1:46:41David Imel?

  That's true.

• 1:46:41Speaker 04

  Yeah. Alright, next question.

• 1:46:44Speaker 03

But now I got to answer this question.

• 1:46:45Speaker 04

Yeah. Finish the sentence, fill in the blank, however you want to look at it. Google Keep is available on Google Play for devices running blank and above. So what version of Android was Google Keep announced with, basically?

• 1:47:01Speaker 03

Can we give number or dessert?

• 1:47:02Speaker 04

  Yeah, I'll take either one.

• 1:47:04Speaker 01

Oh, see, that's it. It wasn't backwards compatible?

• 1:47:11Speaker 04

This is the announcement post, so I don't think it was backwards.

• 1:47:13Speaker 03

What year? Can you tell us what your Google Keep came out?

• 1:47:17Speaker 04

  Fine. 2013.

• 1:47:21Speaker 03

  That gives me nothing.

• 1:47:22Speaker 04

  2013.

• 1:47:25David Imel?

  I'm wrong. Oh, no.

• 1:47:27Speaker 04

Alright, flip 'em and read. What do we got?

• 1:47:29David Imel?

Android 4, which is not true.

• 1:47:32Speaker 04

  What did you put, Marquez?

• 1:47:34Speaker 01

  I put Android 4.2.

• 1:47:37Speaker 04

  4.2?

• 1:47:40Speaker 04

  Ellis?

• 1:47:40Speaker 03

Oh, right. Sorry, I've never done this before. I put Android 6.

• 1:47:44Speaker 04

Android 6. The answer was Android?

• 1:47:48David Imel?

  7.

• 1:47:49Speaker 04

4, so David gets the point.

• 1:47:51Speaker 03

  Let's go!

• 1:47:52Speaker 01

  That's crazy. I wrote 4, and then when you said 2013, I added .2.

• 1:47:56Speaker 04

  Ah.

• 1:47:57Speaker 01

  And now I'm wrong.

• 1:47:58Speaker 04

  Ellis screwed you up.

• 1:47:59Speaker 03

Only, uh, only the real keepers in the building know what's going on.

• 1:48:05Speaker 01

  Is that a honeycomb joke?

• 1:48:07Speaker 03

  It's a David joke, I don't know.

• 1:48:09David Imel?

  The beekeepers.

• 1:48:10Speaker 03

  The beekeepers.

• 1:48:11David Imel?

  Android honeycomb.

• 1:48:12Speaker 03

  That was honeycomb?

• 1:48:12David Imel?

  No.

• 1:48:14Speaker 04

That was 4.0 ice cream sandwich.

• 1:48:15Speaker 01

Ice cream sandwich. Honeycomb was 5. Well.

• 1:48:20Speaker 03

  Wow.

• 1:48:20Speaker 04

  Alright, Marquez, take us out.

• 1:48:21Speaker 01

No, it'd be 3. No, honeycomb was...

• 1:48:24David Imel?

Each has to come before I.

• 1:48:25Speaker 01

  Or not.

• 1:48:26Speaker 03

Thanks for joining us on this episode of the Waveform Podcast. I am your temporary host, Ellis Rovin, filling in for Andrew Manganelli, who will be back in our next episode. And I am joined by regular hosts, David Immelt and Marques Brownlee. This has been great, and we'll see ya next week.

• 1:48:44Speaker 04
