What's the wallpaper on your phone?

• 0:33Speaker 01

  My family.

• 0:34Speaker 02

  It's my kids.

• 0:34Speaker 01

Yeah. Good, this is appropriate. My second family.

• 0:41Speaker 03

Prepare your ears, humans. Happy, Sad, Confused begins now.

• 0:49Josh Horowitz?

Hey guys, it's Josh here. Welcome to another edition of Happy, Sad, Confused. We've got not one, but two mega-stars who have never been on the podcast before. So excited to say that, yes, Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell on Happy, Sad, Confused at last. It only took about 11 years to have them on the show, but better late than never. They're always welcome, and hopefully it won't be another 11 before they're back. That's coming up as the main event today on Happy, Sad, Confused. Other things I want to mention. No events to plug right now, but there's always stuff around the corner. Stay tuned. Patreon, you know the deal. Patreon.com/happysadconfused. That's where you get all the exclusives. We got posters galore.

• 1:34Josh Horowitz?

We got Kate Winslet, Emily Blunt, Claire Foy, Jodie Comer, Sam Heughan, Austin Butler. I don't know, this is just off the top of my head. We got tons. So check out Patreon.com/happysadconfused for early access, discount codes, and all sorts of autographed cool stuff. Plus some swag, free merch. Check it out. Um, speaking of cool stuff, I wanted to plug something I got a chance to see in New York, and thankfully, it's not really, it's an ongoing run, even if it's kind of in fits and starts. Uh, I got a chance to see Hugh Jackman do his thing at Radio City Music Hall. Uh, and look, we all know, I think we all know by now, that not only can Hugh Jackman,

• 2:18Josh Horowitz?

um, be the ultimate hero, anti-hero in Wolverine, badass Wolverine on screen, but he's a song and dance man at heart, and he's so good at it. And, um, I've been lucky enough to see him on stage in a number of different incarnations over the years. And I just want to say, not that he needs a plug from me, but his latest show is fantastic, and it's kind of an old school, um, big kind of Hollywood throwback of a theatrical experience. He sings a lot of Greatest Showman and some Music Man, and on the show I saw, Neil Diamond. Um, Ryan Reynolds was at the show I'm at. I'm not sure if that's always gonna be part of the proceedings, but that was fun. So, um, the good news is, like I said, it's not like one small run.

• 3:03Josh Horowitz?

He's actually playing, I think, a bunch of weekends throughout the year at Radio City Music Hall. So, if you're in New York, if you're planning a trip to New York, look it up. That's my unsolicited plug for, uh, a guy I've gotten a chance to do a lot with over the years, including Happy Seg Infused. Look it up, probably a long time ago now, so he's another one overdue. Okay, let's talk about Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon. Um, so as I said, they have never been on the podcast, and that's kind of surprising. Um, only because their careers have definitely coincided with my run at Happy Seg Infused, and also my run at MTV. Um, I have done a ton with these guys. They are so charming, so professional. I mean, this is not news to anybody that's watched these two

• 3:48Josh Horowitz?

live their lives over the last 25 years, but, um, I was so thrilled to have them on the show together. They are promoting a very funny new comedy, kind of, again, a throwback of a rom-com that really worked for me. It's on Prime, uh, at the end of this week, as you, if you're listening to this as we drop it. Um, I'm sure this is gonna be the kind of movie that gets a gajillion views, because it is so watchable and so fun, and like I said, kind of like checks that box of that rom-com that we haven't seen done well, I will say, a lot in recent years. And it's no surprise, because it's written and directed, I should say, by Nick Stoller. Who's done a lot of really good stuff. Um, and it's a kind of a silly fun premise where it's two families have both booked the same

• 4:30Josh Horowitz?

locale for a wedding and unbeknownst to each other, and then they have to kind of make, figure it all out together. Um, I laughed a lot and, uh, related to the characters and just had a blast. So you're, you're cordially invited. I haven't even said the name of the film. That's the name of the movie. You're cordially invited. It's on Prime Video. Check it out. Uh, I'm sure you'll want to after you watch or listen to this conversation with Reese and Will. Uh, this is, uh, sometimes these combo interviews can be challenging. In this case, this is, was such an easy, fun one because they're so willing to go to different places. Um, we talk a lot about different parts of their career.

• 5:07Josh Horowitz?

Um, you know, notable performances from Elf and Old School to Election, Cruel Intentions. We cover a lot in this, so, uh, really happy with how it went. And I think you're going to have a blast if you have half as much fun watching or listening to this as I did in the room with them. Then mission accomplished. So enjoy this. Oh, wait disclaimer. And this is one of those shitty disclaimers. Uh, the audio, I, I know you guys are going to roast me in the comments or whatever. I, I can't, I can only do so much. Um, Reese's mic, we had some trouble with. We didn't realize it. Um, it was really crappy, really crappy audio. So the crack team at Happy Sae Confuse is going to do our best in post.

• 5:53Josh Horowitz?

It's definitely listenable, watchable. It's okay, but it's not the best quality. So apologies, apologies, apologies. Do the best we can. Sometimes we come up short. So don't roast me in the comments, guys. We're, we're, we're trying, okay? I'm giving you Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon for free. What, what can I, what can I tell you? Um, okay. Enjoy this. Check out their movie on Prime. You're cordially invited. And if you are so inclined, look up Hugh Jackman's show at Radio City. Makes for a fun night out with the fam. Uh, a costly night out, but it's worth it. It's Hugh Jackman. Okay, here's me and Reese and Will.

• 6:32Josh Horowitz?

Look, guys, there's no official introduction except to say we're killing two birds with one stone because neither of you have ever done the podcast before. And this is long overdue. Reese, Will, congratulations, you're cordially invited.

• 6:45Speaker 01

Oh, I thought you were gonna say congratulate on doing the podcast.

• 6:48Josh Horowitz?

Well, that too, obviously. That's the major congrats in the air right now. No, the film is fantastic. Congratulations, guys. This movie has everything. It's got two of our greatest stars, it's got a great premise, it's got Will hugging an alligator on the poster. This is the ultimate.

• 7:06Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 7:06Josh Horowitz?

  Fair enough?

• 7:07Speaker 02

Yeah. That might be my favorite poster.

• 7:10Speaker 01

It's a really weird, funny poster.

• 7:13Speaker 02

  Yeah, it's good.

• 7:15Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 7:15Josh Horowitz?

Talk to me, when you hear a good premise for a film, do you know? Like, do you know, like, this has the ingredients for something that's gonna sustain an entire narrative? Because there's a funny core idea at the heart of this one, obviously.

• 7:29Speaker 01

I mean, here's the thing. Nick Stoller, writer-director Nick Stoller, has a pretty good track record. And this just seemed like it'd be fun. Whether it'd turn out any good, you never know.

• 7:44Speaker 02

  Who knows?

• 7:45Speaker 01

But then you add "America's sweetheart" here. All bets are off.

• 7:51Josh Horowitz?

  That's official.

• 7:51Speaker 01

  That's official.

• 7:52Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 7:53Speaker 01

  That's official.

• 7:53Josh Horowitz?

You're both kind of America's sweethearts, though.

• 7:55Speaker 02

  He's really America's sweetheart. Let's get real.

• 7:57Josh Horowitz?

You should fight to the death over this honor, right here and now.

• 8:00Speaker 01

Over the crown, the sweetheart crown?

• 8:03Josh Horowitz?

Are you guys, so this, look, the premise at its core, two weddings, one venue, double-booked nightmare scenario. Are you guys, are you guys good wedding guests?

• 8:14Speaker 02

  I'm an ex, I mean, I'm top-rated.

• 8:18Josh Horowitz?

  Well, no, no, no.

• 8:19Speaker 02

Just only in the domestic US, though.

• 8:22Speaker 01

  It falls overseas.

• 8:24Josh Horowitz?

  Right, no, it falls off.

• 8:25Speaker 02

  My rating's really low there.

• 8:28Josh Horowitz?

  Do you...

• 8:29Speaker 01

Reese, from hearing her talk about herself, gets up, she participates.

• 8:34Josh Horowitz?

  You're in it.

• 8:35Speaker 01

She's on the dance floor, right?

• 8:36Josh Horowitz?

First on the dance floor, last off?

• 8:38Speaker 02

  I'm giving meaningful toasts.

• 8:40Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 8:40Speaker 02

I am hugging people in a deep heartfelt way. I'm telling everyone they feel loved, they are loved and cared for.

• 8:47Josh Horowitz?

Yeah. What's the song that is best to play at a wedding to ensure folks getting up on the dance floor? Provocative, I know, yeah.

• 8:59Speaker 01

Well, what's, um, it's, I mean, it's always, it's a fan favorite. I'm forgetting, but "A Little Bit Louder Now"?

• 9:10Josh Horowitz?

Sorry, the audio's not coming through. What?

• 9:15Speaker 02

  Talk on the slide.

• 9:16Speaker 01

  No, "From Animal House".

• 9:19Josh Horowitz?

All our brains are liquefying. I'm sorry, I don't, I don't have it.

• 9:24Speaker 01

  Shout.

• 9:24Josh Horowitz?

  Shout, thank you.

• 9:26Speaker 02

  You wanna shout?

• 9:28Speaker 01

  Right, that'll get people on.

• 9:30Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 9:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 9:32Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 9:32Speaker 01

  No? Okay, whatever.

• 9:35Josh Horowitz?

I only dance one song at my own wedding.

• 9:37Speaker 02

  What?

• 9:38Speaker 01

  You're just not a dancer?

• 9:39Josh Horowitz?

  I'm not a dancer.

• 9:40Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 9:41Josh Horowitz?

  You know, I feel judged.

• 9:42Speaker 01

No, shame on you. Was your wife just in the worst mood?

• 9:46Josh Horowitz?

She has been for the last nearly 20 years, yeah. No, it just, it's not, I can't do it, I can't do it.

• 9:52Speaker 01

  Because you're embarrassed?

• 9:53Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 9:54Speaker 01

Oh, but, no one's judging. I mean, they are, but everyone's like, it's so sweet, he's a terrible dancer.

• 10:02Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, okay, the next wedding I'll get it right. No, no.

• 10:06Speaker 01

  Renew your vows.

• 10:07Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 10:08Speaker 01

  And dance the night away.

• 10:09Josh Horowitz?

I always worry about the renewing of vows thing. Where do we come down on that?

• 10:15Josh Horowitz?

It's a little. Is it a little overcompensation?

• 10:19Speaker 01

Is it a little showy up? Yeah.

• 10:21Speaker 02

  I have no judgment.

• 10:22Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 10:24Josh Horowitz?

  Your face is saying something.

• 10:26Speaker 01

There are some who renew it every year.

• 10:29Speaker 02

  Congratulations.

• 10:30Speaker 01

  Renew it every year.

• 10:32Josh Horowitz?

  Right, that's how.

• 10:32Speaker 01

  Or take, yeah.

• 10:33Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 10:34Speaker 02

Will's done it two, uh, three, two, three times?

• 10:38Speaker 01

I've renewed our vows multiple times.

• 10:41Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 10:42Speaker 02

  Was it there?

• 10:43Speaker 01

  Viv.

• 10:43Josh Horowitz?

  Was that mutual?

• 10:45Speaker 01

I just pick a super romantic spot.

• 10:49Speaker 01

  Either beach, yeah.

• 10:51Speaker 02

  Remember.

• 10:52Speaker 01

  And just I remember.

• 10:52Speaker 02

And then do you just look at your wedding album?

• 10:55Josh Horowitz?

We're back. We're doing it again.

• 10:57Speaker 01

And it's not documented in any way.

• 10:58Speaker 02

I think the best wedding song is "We Are Family."

• 11:01Speaker 01

  Oh, that's a great one.

• 11:03Josh Horowitz?

  And it works.

• 11:04Speaker 02

Whether or not you like it or not, you're now a family.

• 11:08Speaker 01

Is it wrong to play "We Are The Champions"?

• 11:12Speaker 01

  We are the champions.

• 11:14Speaker 02

  "Another one bites the dust."

• 11:15Speaker 01

  "Another one bites the dust."

• 11:18Josh Horowitz?

The subtext there, though. I don't, yeah. Okay, what's, um, other random things to talk about in relation to your wonderful movie? I mentioned The Alligator, working with animals. You've both worked with animals.

• 11:28Speaker 02

Of course, there's so many animals.

• 11:30Josh Horowitz?

I think you both have like-

• 11:31Speaker 02

  There's a joke in there.

• 11:34Josh Horowitz?

  And actual animals, too, yeah.

• 11:37Josh Horowitz?

  Top-tier actors.

• 11:38Speaker 01

Are you comfortable riding a horse?

• 11:40Josh Horowitz?

  Oh, yeah.

• 11:41Speaker 02

Very. I've ridden a lot of horses in movies. And I've ridden an elephant in a movie.

• 11:47Speaker 01

  Oh, my gosh.

• 11:47Speaker 02

  More than once. Twice.

• 11:49Josh Horowitz?

Wait, water elephants? What's the other?

• 11:50Speaker 02

Um, maybe I did called Vanity Fair in India.

• 11:53Josh Horowitz?

  Sure.

• 11:53Speaker 02

  I rode an elephant.

• 11:54Josh Horowitz?

  Yep.

• 11:55Speaker 02

And I have worked with multiple dogs.

• 11:59Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 12:00Speaker 02

I'm a big dog. Like, it's so funny because people, because I've worked with so many dog trainers, I think I'm, like, just by osmosis.

• 12:09Speaker 01

Do you have one of those clickers you keep in your pocket?

• 12:12Josh Horowitz?

She uses it for you, right?

• 12:13Speaker 01

  I gotta pay him.

• 12:14Speaker 02

I always have a clicker in my pocket.

• 12:16Speaker 01

The animal trainer comes on and is like, "I'm sorry, I gotta pay him."

• 12:18Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 12:20Speaker 01

That's the terminology for giving the animal a treat.

• 12:23Josh Horowitz?

They do that with you, too.

• 12:24Speaker 01

  Paid, yeah.

• 12:26Speaker 02

  I gotta pay him.

• 12:27Speaker 01

Can I have one of those treaties?

• 12:28Speaker 02

Yeah, we gotta stop. They need to, yeah.

• 12:31Josh Horowitz?

Is there something about, like, being on a film set that makes you do things that-

• 12:35Speaker 02

Is there a reason you wanted to ask about animals?

• 12:36Josh Horowitz?

Well, because I think of The Alligator. I think of the alligator scene in this.

• 12:39Speaker 02

Because that was a real alligator?

• 12:43Josh Horowitz?

  I mean.

• 12:44Speaker 02

  What do you think?

• 12:45Speaker 01

  By the way.

• 12:45Josh Horowitz?

  No, I don't think so.

• 12:46Speaker 01

  I do remember.

• 12:47Josh Horowitz?

I mean, it looks great. Don't get me wrong.

• 12:48Speaker 02

Tell them a story about the alligator.

• 12:50Josh Horowitz?

Tell me the story about the alligator.

• 12:50Speaker 01

  Which one?

• 12:51Josh Horowitz?

  The one in your movie.

• 12:52Speaker 01

There was, there was an animal trainer who sent a video to try to convince our, our line producer that I could, we could use a real alligator.

• 13:03Josh Horowitz?

That you could wrestle an alligator?

• 13:04Speaker 02

Will Ferrell could hold this. It's Verdasl.

• 13:07Speaker 01

  And she's holding it?

• 13:08Speaker 02

And he's like yanking it by the tail.

• 13:10Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 13:11Speaker 01

And he, he could do this, and he could do that. Meanwhile, as you see, if you see the scene.

• 13:16Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 13:17Speaker 01

I'm thrashing about. There's no way that live alligator would have tolerated.

• 13:21Josh Horowitz?

  No.

• 13:22Speaker 01

Oh, we can make, we can make him real sleepy.

• 13:25Josh Horowitz?

But what a way to go. What a story it would be. All in the service of great comedy.

• 13:30Speaker 01

I remember riding a donkey on SNL.

• 13:34Speaker 01

And during the dress rehearsal, the donkeys were so funny and they wouldn't stay in one place. And one started trying to like nuzzle Daryl Hammond's crotch.

• 13:43Josh Horowitz?

  Sure.

• 13:44Speaker 01

And then they, then they, they sedated them for the live show and the donkeys were almost falling over while we were on their backs.

• 13:52Josh Horowitz?

  Huh.

• 13:53Speaker 01

  Anyway.

• 13:54Josh Horowitz?

  I remember way back.

• 13:55Speaker 02

  And that's a great story.

• 13:56Josh Horowitz?

  It is a story.

• 13:57Speaker 02

You know, SNL 50. That's a good story for SNL 50.

• 14:00Speaker 01

They also got a camel stuck in a freight elevator at once.

• 14:02Speaker 02

  What are you talking about?

• 14:04Speaker 01

  At SNL.

• 14:05Speaker 02

This is like, this is like the true life horror stories of SNL. This is not.

• 14:09Speaker 01

You could hear the camel bleeding down the hallway.

• 14:14Josh Horowitz?

I do feel like there's like something that clicks at least in my brain on shoots. And maybe it happens for you guys when you're shooting in a film, like that you do things you wouldn't normally do because the cameras are on and you just sort of get sucked into the atmosphere.

• 14:26Speaker 02

  100%.

• 14:27Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 14:27Speaker 02

And then once people start laughing, I can't stop.

• 14:31Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 14:32Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 14:32Speaker 01

  That's your fear.

• 14:33Josh Horowitz?

You will grab that alligator. Yeah.

• 14:34Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 14:35Josh Horowitz?

I remember, I don't know if you remember this, for Land of the Lost way back when, we shot a promo where there was a giant albino python draped over our necks, Will. See, this is how much you've done. You don't even remember that.

• 14:47Speaker 01

Yeah, I don't remember that. But that.

• 14:49Speaker 02

  I've worked with that python.

• 14:50Speaker 01

That I'm not afraid of at all.

• 14:51Speaker 02

He's a great guy. He's a great guy. I'm not even kidding. I've worked with the albino python.

• 14:55Josh Horowitz?

  That's in the industry.

• 14:56Speaker 02

There can't be more than one.

• 14:57Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 14:57Speaker 01

  You're right. Yeah.

• 14:58Speaker 02

There can't. But no, wait. Tell me what you're gonna say.

• 15:01Speaker 01

No, I, but I'm not, that's not scary at all to me.

• 15:05Josh Horowitz?

Have you ever feared for your life working with an animal? The bears?

• 15:08Speaker 01

Well, the bears in, in Anchorman.

• 15:11Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 15:12Speaker 02

  I heard that was not

• 15:14Speaker 01

  That was an army.

• 15:14Speaker 02

  Safe.

• 15:16Josh Horowitz?

  In retrospect, maybe, bad call.

• 15:17Speaker 01

And we should have listened to the animal trainers.

• 15:21Josh Horowitz?

  Generally, yeah.

• 15:22Speaker 01

Who kept saying that, "Oh yeah, the bear can do this, bear can do that." Keep in mind, it is a bear. Which is like, I think it's like the release.

• 15:34Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 15:34Speaker 01

  The verbal release.

• 15:35Josh Horowitz?

  And I'm good. I'm exalt.

• 15:38Speaker 01

"Oh, the bear will let you do this, bear, bear." Keep in mind, though, it is a bear.

• 15:42Speaker 01

So basically, I'm still not responsible if anything happens. You know it's bad when like a stunt person is like, "God, I've worked with everything." Bears, I just do not trust. Okay, and action. Get in there. So.

• 15:57Josh Horowitz?

Is the key to, segueing out of the animals, some things you get to do in this film, deliver drunken dialogues. The key, I've always heard this from actors, the key to playing drunk, you're trying not to be drunk, you're like actively like denying that you're drunk in the scene. Is that on your mind when you're like kind of slurring your words a little bit, but not overly so? Reese?

• 16:19Speaker 02

I could reveal my secrets to how I play drunk, but then I'd have nothing left for my memoirs, so.

• 16:25Speaker 01

  So smart.

• 16:26Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, it's gonna be multi-volume, yeah.

• 16:30Speaker 02

So I'm just gonna leave that. No, I have played drunk in movies before.

• 16:33Speaker 01

Let the work speak for itself.

• 16:35Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 16:35Speaker 02

  It's part of.

• 16:36Josh Horowitz?

What's your secret to playing? I mean, I think, is it analogous drunk to getting shot with a tranquilizer dart in Old School? Does that feel like in the same realm?

• 16:48Speaker 01

  I...

• 16:49Speaker 02

  That's my favorite scene ever.

• 16:50Josh Horowitz?

It is. It is one of the greatest scenes in film cinema history.

• 16:53Speaker 02

Right. And when John, like, "God, cause you don't look all right, man."

• 16:59Speaker 02

  And you're like, "What?"

• 17:01Speaker 01

  "You're crazy."

• 17:06Speaker 01

  I'm so method.

• 17:08Josh Horowitz?

  Yes, we've heard that, yeah.

• 17:09Speaker 01

Yeah. So I had them shoot me with a dart.

• 17:13Speaker 02

  Whoa.

• 17:13Speaker 01

Just to see what it'd feel like. That's not true.

• 17:16Speaker 02

  How'd it feel?

• 17:18Speaker 01

I didn't notice it at first.

• 17:19Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 17:27Josh Horowitz?

If I had a dollar for everybody in my life who's benefited from therapy, I would be a very, very rich man. Therapy has certainly helped me, especially when I was a confused teenager. And thankfully, that's not a shameful thing to say anymore, right? It's okay to seek help and need help and talk about it. We're all doing our best. We're just trying to get by, right, guys? Unfortunately, the reality is that getting help is still harder than it should be. That's why I'm thrilled always to have Rula as a sponsor of Happy, say I confused, because it's very obvious to me that online therapy should be both accessible and affordable for everybody. So let's make it easy for anybody who wants help to get help. That's where Rula comes in. Here's the thing a lot of online therapy platforms don't actually talk about. Most don't take insurance.

• 18:12Josh Horowitz?

That means you're either paying out of pocket or signing up for some very expensive monthly subscription. Rula does it all differently. They work with over 120 insurance plans. So the average copay, I can't get over this, it's just 15 bucks a session. So basically two of your lattes, okay? A pretty good deal if you ask me. That means you can get real therapy from a licensed professional without breaking the bank. And Rula doesn't just set you up and leave you alone. They give you that therapist and then they're along the way, the whole journey with you to make sure your care is working for you and you're actually making progress, hitting your goals. This can all happen right away, guys. With Rula, appointments are often available as soon as tomorrow. There are no wait lists. There's no frustrating back and forth. They make it easy. Thousands of people are already using Rula to get affordable,

• 18:57Josh Horowitz?

high-quality therapy that's actually covered by insurance. Visit rula.com/happy to get started. That's rula, R-U-L-A dot com slash happy. You deserve mental health care that works with you, not against your budget. You guys know the best stuff in your closet is the stuff that you actually wear, right? The things that you just keep coming back to, whether you're going to work, you're going out, you're just hanging around. Well, with the holidays coming up, Quince makes it really easy to find great gifts for everyone on your list. This year, I'm doing a lot of my holiday shopping at Quince, and yes, that includes a few things for myself. That's okay, right? One of the things I love about Quince is that you're getting really high-quality stuff without spending a fortune. Their cashmere sweaters start at just 60 bucks, and they've

• 19:39Josh Horowitz?

got everything from great down jackets and wool coats to cashmere scarves and accessories. Basically, everything you need to stay warm and look good this winter. And they're using really premium materials at Quince. We're talking 100% Mongolian cashmere, Italian leather, even 14-karat gold. These are the kinds of things that make great gifts, but also that make people actually use them, right? And wear long after the holidays. And here's the best part: Quince prices everything 50% to 80% less than similar brands. How did they do it? Well, they work directly with ethical factories, and they cut out the middlemen. So you're getting that luxury quality without paying those crazy luxury prices. I love how functional and fashionable all my Quince stuff is. I've got a cashmere

• 20:21Josh Horowitz?

hoodie that is honestly invaluable and actually makes me look like I know what I'm talking about when it comes to fashion, and that is a miracle. So give the gift of quality this holiday season. Download the Quince app for app-exclusive offers, or go to quince.com. Get free shipping on your order and 365-day returns. It's now available in Canada and the UK, too. And when Quince asks where you've heard about them, you know what to do. Let them know it was happy, sad, confused. That's the best way to support our show.

• 20:54Josh Horowitz?

What's the film of each other that you've seen the most, do you think?

• 20:58Speaker 01

  Election.

• 20:59Speaker 02

Talladega Nights. Or Elf. I mean, is there a human on Earth who hasn't seen Elf every Christmas?

• 21:06Josh Horowitz?

The one I want to speak with? No. Right?

• 21:09Speaker 01

There's a backlash, though. Did you hear about the backlash?

• 21:12Speaker 02

  No.

• 21:14Speaker 01

I'm starting my own backlash against them.

• 21:16Josh Horowitz?

Oh, because everything they say it is, guys.

• 21:18Speaker 01

  Guys.

• 21:19Speaker 02

But have you watched it recently? Have you watched it recently?

• 21:23Speaker 01

  Have you really watched?

• 21:24Speaker 02

  All right, watch it again.

• 21:26Speaker 01

Watch it again. And tell me, you don't find it...

• 21:29Josh Horowitz?

You brought back Buddy recently at an NHL game.

• 21:32Speaker 01

  Buddy? No, Buddy just appeared.

• 21:34Josh Horowitz?

You can't stop Buddy when Buddy wants out.

• 21:37Speaker 01

Buddy just wanted a night out.

• 21:39Josh Horowitz?

Is there a moment of like pause when you were putting on the costume like?

• 21:43Speaker 01

Oh, no, I was totally, I just knew we were gonna be home for the, the winter break. And we're, we're season tickets to the LA Kings. Uh, and we have these amazing seats that are right on the glass. And I, I literally said to Viv, like, ah, you know, the one thing I want to do. I want to go to a Kings game. I want not shave for a week and get like some candy cigarette, get some fake cigarettes and just sit there as like a down and out Buddy the Elf and see what the reaction is. That's it.

• 22:15Josh Horowitz?

  Mission accomplished.

• 22:16Speaker 01

  Mission accomplished.

• 22:18Speaker 02

And your, and your wife is just like, cool.

• 22:20Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 22:20Speaker 02

  Yeah, cool.

• 22:21Josh Horowitz?

At this point, she's probably knows what.

• 22:23Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 22:24Speaker 01

She's, Viv's so used to everything now. She's like, okay, what time do we need to be there? Bye. I'm like, honey, you can't laugh. She's like, okay.

• 22:31Speaker 02

But like, where are we gonna park?

• 22:33Speaker 01

  Right.

• 22:33Speaker 02

Should we get snacks ahead of time?

• 22:35Speaker 01

  She's very tolerant.

• 22:36Josh Horowitz?

Would you ever go into character from your pantheon of wonderful roles and put them out into the real world? Go to a football game as L. Woods just for shits and giggles? Not as.

• 22:52Speaker 01

  Probably not, right?

• 22:53Josh Horowitz?

  That's a no.

• 22:59Speaker 02

  Probably, probably not.

• 23:00Josh Horowitz?

  That's a good.

• 23:02Speaker 02

  Hello.

• 23:06Josh Horowitz?

Speaking of Buddy, how, how fiercely have you had to defend not doing a sequel over the years?

• 23:12Speaker 02

Oh, my God, I want to hear this.

• 23:13Josh Horowitz?

I would imagine the studio comes to you and Favreau and everybody and says, guys, this is money waiting to be cashed in.

• 23:20Speaker 01

There was a lot of, there was a lot of movement after the film initially came out, of which I maintained that it's gonna be really hard because it's a classic fish out of water story.

• 23:33Speaker 02

  It's a perfect movie.

• 23:34Speaker 01

And, and, but prove me wrong. And a, an attempt was made at a script which, you know, tried its best, but I just was like. I don't know. Yeah. And I was offered a crazy amount of money.

• 23:51Speaker 01

But no, I just was, I was like, I have to be able to sit in a setting like this and talk about the movie.

• 23:58Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 23:59Speaker 01

In a way that I feel good about. And I was talking to, you know, my manager going, "Look, if I were to promote that movie, I'd be literally saying, I did it for the money." Straight up. And like, "Do you want that messaging out there?" And yeah, so, and then they tried a little bit later down the road.

• 24:20Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 24:21Speaker 01

  It just.

• 24:22Josh Horowitz?

Was there any concept that seemed insane? That seemed like, that you recall? No.

• 24:26Speaker 01

But, but someone brought, I think it was Stoller, in fact, after seeing that photo that I just did, he was like, "Oh, maybe it's that Buddy's a little down and out." But no one wants to see that, right?

• 24:41Speaker 02

  That'd be hard to watch.

• 24:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 24:42Josh Horowitz?

It'd be sad for all of us to watch, right in that state.

• 24:45Speaker 02

  Buddy, daddy, buddy.

• 24:46Speaker 01

Buddy's given up. He refuses to.

• 24:49Speaker 02

No. No, I can't see him without hope and joy.

• 24:52Speaker 01

Find a bathroom? He just soils himself, you know?

• 24:54Josh Horowitz?

  Dark.

• 24:55Speaker 01

  Dark.

• 24:56Josh Horowitz?

Perfect for our times. A buddy for 2025, yeah.

• 25:00Speaker 01

He just stinks. Buddy, you stink. Oh, yeah? Give me a break. You don't know what I've been through.

• 25:08Josh Horowitz?

  Oh, my God.

• 25:09Speaker 02

You're like, what are Buddy's problems, you know?

• 25:11Josh Horowitz?

  I don't know. I don't know.

• 25:13Speaker 02

Nick Stoller would think of something really funny, though. He's just fine.

• 25:16Josh Horowitz?

We're happy to leave it well enough alone. I think it's a good call. That being said, on the Tracy Flick side, and I spoke to Alexander Payne about this.

• 25:23Speaker 02

Okay, I don't think Will knows about this.

• 25:25Josh Horowitz?

I mean, he's actively, they're scripting it, right?

• 25:28Speaker 02

  I know.

• 25:28Josh Horowitz?

I'm sure you're well involved in that.

• 25:30Speaker 02

So, it's based on a book by Tom Perotta, and Tom Perotta wrote a sequel probably two years ago, and Alexander and Jim Taylor

• 25:38Speaker 01

  No way.

• 25:38Speaker 02

  are adapting it.

• 25:39Josh Horowitz?

  Amazing.

• 25:41Speaker 02

  So we'll see.

• 25:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 25:42Josh Horowitz?

  Are you?

• 25:42Speaker 02

It's hard for me, it was so hard reading the book because I felt like, it didn't feel like it was me that I was reading about, but it felt like one of my dearest friends that I was reading what happened to her and I didn't know what happened to her. And I was so worried I could put him down the book and I was like, is she okay? Like.

• 25:58Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, right.

• 26:00Speaker 02

Is she have issues? Like, you know she has issues.

• 26:04Speaker 02

I don't think there's anything wrong with her, but it was really tender. It was like emotional because I do feel so much tenderness for all these people. Because as, I mean, this is me getting philosophical about comedy, but you can't play the journey of a character like Adele Woods or Crazy Flick without finding some sympathy at some essential part of their humanity. Whether they feel extremely lonely or they're ambitious because they don't have a dad and, you know, or there's just all sorts of stuff tied in it for me that they feel very real and whole to me.

• 26:41Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 26:42Speaker 02

So, anyway, it was really, it was great. I had the novel, it was great. And of course, Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor can just, I just love every movie they do.

• 26:52Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, I know.

• 26:52Speaker 02

  It's really fun.

• 26:54Josh Horowitz?

Here's like a general point of commonality, I feel like when I look at both your careers. I feel like you both, you haven't followed the kind of playbook that maybe others would set for you. Like, you infamously buddy the elf at an NHL game is best example, Casa de Mi Padre. Like, there are a thousand examples of what Will Ferrell has done that nobody in their right mind would say, "Do that." And you, in a different way, I feel like I've obviously charted a very specific path true to you, your love of books, your love of specific projects. Is that something that you feel like, you must both take a certain pride in, that like, being true to yourselves over the years has borne out the careers we can talk about today

• 27:37Josh Horowitz?

as opposed to following what someone else had envisioned for you?

• 27:42Speaker 02

Yeah. I mean, I just have a very strange sense of humor, I think. And what I think is funny is maybe not usually what other people think is funny. And then also I get, I have like a more serious side. Sometimes I want to do that kind of stuff and then.

• 27:59Speaker 02

Yeah, and I'm like you, like, I don't know. It's, to me, it's about connecting and

• 28:06Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 28:07Speaker 02

And the group of people you're working with, because as I've gotten older, it's, that's so paramount, the experience.

• 28:12Josh Horowitz?

Right, it's just not worth it to work with people better.

• 28:14Speaker 02

I don't, I don't wanna have a stressful experience. I wanna have, um, I also wanna work with people who are incredibly talented and like, we can play off each other and so that your experiences become more and more rare. Because that group is very, yeah.

• 28:30Speaker 01

Yeah, I just, I just at a certain point had this thing, I mean, it's kind of, it, it draws parallels with Saturday Night Live in that we would have these sketches, you know, you're lucky enough to have a sketch that's a recurring character that everyone, you know, like the cheerleaders and this thing that is like a hit, but then,

• 28:53Speaker 01

I also relish those, what we'd call on the show, the ten to one sketches, which is, they would air at ten minutes to one. It's the last sketch of the night and it's usually an oddball thing. And I loved writing those, you know, left of center kind of, kind of things. And I think that I just always loved indulging that part of my brain and while I still had currency, have currency in this business, why not do a Lifetime movie?

• 29:24Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 29:26Speaker 01

A movie entirely in Spanish. Deadly Dark, yeah.

• 29:31Speaker 01

But like, let, let's also do these quirky,

• 29:35Speaker 01

weird stuff to augment, you know, and, and I still love doing the poppier stuff in a way, but yeah, lucky to be able to get to do all that.

• 29:46Josh Horowitz?

Is there anything so weird beyond even what we've talked about that you haven't been able to make it happen that, that the folks have said, that's even crazy by your standards, we can't let you do that, Will?

• 29:57Speaker 01

There is a, there I pray that we get to do it, but Harper Steele has written this script that is so frickin funny. It's about coyotes take over Los Angeles. An actor told me about, Sam Rockwell told me about this. Yes, and it's almost in a Omega Man. Yeah. Charlton Heston kind of scientist who like, something's not working right. And that, because anyone who lives in Los Angeles, you see coyotes live everywhere. And that they've now have a sophisticated culture and they've learned to speak. Some of them know how to talk. Sure. So it's kind of like Planet of the Apes meets, but it's coyotes.

• 30:41Speaker 01

And it's so surrealist and absurd and yet heightened and dumb. Yeah. And, but Hollywood's in a weird state, like, we pitched it, it was like, how realistic are the, is there a horror element to it? We're like, no. Like, no one will touch it, in a way.

• 30:59Speaker 02

  That's so weird to me.

• 31:00Speaker 01

  It's so weird, yeah.

• 31:01Speaker 02

  Especially after Cocaine Bear.

• 31:02Speaker 01

  Right.

• 31:03Speaker 02

  Which was so popular.

• 31:05Speaker 01

But they use that as example, that, they said, even Cocaine Bear, though, it, when it, when, you know,

• 31:12Speaker 02

  It was gory.

• 31:12Speaker 01

  It's gory, it's real gore.

• 31:14Speaker 02

But you don't want to have gore.

• 31:16Speaker 01

We don't want to have gore, and if we have gore, we want it to be silly and like, bad puppets. We don't want realistic, like, Right, that's a different thing, yeah. We want it chintzy schmaltzy, lo-fi, bad movie.

• 31:31Speaker 02

  In-camera effects. I love it.

• 31:33Speaker 01

We love it. It'll happen, so.

• 31:35Speaker 02

So I'll put up the money. Is that what this was about?

• 31:41Speaker 01

This show is all, take down the cameras.

• 31:42Speaker 02

Is that what this podcast is?

• 31:44Speaker 01

Yes. Rewinding my fellow's crazy projects. Can we bring the paperwork? I got a docu-sign.

• 31:49Speaker 02

Just sign, here, here, here, here and here.

• 31:51Speaker 01

  Docu-sign?

• 31:52Speaker 02

  Here, here and here.

• 31:53Speaker 01

Oh, you missed one. Do either you,

• 31:57Speaker 02

  Fine.

• 31:57Speaker 01

  You're here and here.

• 31:58Speaker 02

Fine. Wait, how much does this movie cost?

• 32:01Speaker 01

I don't know. Two hundred million dollars, yeah. I'd do it for zero, yeah.

• 32:10Speaker 05

• 34:09Josh Horowitz?

Do either of you remember the last time you auditioned? Does any part of you miss auditioning?

• 34:15Speaker 02

I, that fear feeling, what I will say, and we were recently with this young person who set out and who was very established, who auditioned for their last movie. And I thought, it was Ariana Grande talking about how she was auditioned for Rick.

• 34:28Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 34:29Speaker 02

And I thought, I thought that was so great that she told that story because I do think ego can really stop creativity.

• 34:38Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 34:38Speaker 02

You, you should feel afraid and you shouldn't just be guaranteed to get everything. I auditioned for Tim Burton once, I didn't get it, but I was glad I did it. You know, I think he's amazing. I think he's worthy of any kind of, you know, big effort to try and get the job.

• 34:56Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 34:57Speaker 02

I don't know, I just think we're all just creative people trying to make the best decision.

• 35:02Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 35:02Speaker 02

  Have you auditioned for things?

• 35:06Speaker 01

  I'm afraid of this.

• 35:07Speaker 02

  No, you don't like auditioning?

• 35:09Speaker 01

  No, no, I, I-

• 35:10Speaker 02

You're offer only, is that what you're trying to say?

• 35:11Speaker 01

  I'm offer only.

• 35:12Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, we've heard that.

• 35:13Speaker 01

No, the Saturday Night Live auditions are burned into my brain forever. And yet, it's the only way, I don't know, I guess you can go and watch someone at a comedy club and do their stuff, but there was something about the intensity of doing it in the studio where they shoot the show and Lauren, like a producer, sitting in the shadows. He might as well have been just smoking a cigarette and seeing the ember of it. But, but the empty studio and it, um, he, there was a method to his madness. He wanted to create the tension and the enormity of what it feels like to do live television. And it, it worked.

• 35:54Speaker 01

You, you were like, kind of shaking going out there, but then there was a part of you being creative people where you had to just like, this is so insane that now I'm not nervous because it's not going to happen. And you just fall back into what you know you can do.

• 36:09Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 36:10Speaker 01

So, I agree with Reese. It's, it's an awful process, but it's the only process to go through.

• 36:19Josh Horowitz?

Presumably you didn't have to audition for your singing part in this. I want to ruin anything for the audience, but there is some singing. There's a duet.

• 36:26Speaker 01

  There is.

• 36:26Josh Horowitz?

Stick around, guys. You're cordially invited. Did you know your delicious voices would meld so well?

• 36:33Speaker 02

I had no idea. I hoped.

• 36:38Speaker 01

  He's journal about it.

• 36:40Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 36:40Speaker 02

  I dreamt one day.

• 36:42Speaker 01

I think Stoller and I were talking about it. That'd be fun to do a duet.

• 36:48Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 36:48Speaker 01

  At the end.

• 36:49Speaker 02

Will's amazing. He was in the booth, like, laying down tracks. That was the first day.

• 36:55Speaker 01

Before we even started filming, right?

• 36:56Speaker 02

  Hanging.

• 36:57Speaker 01

  Yeah. Yeah.

• 36:58Josh Horowitz?

You've both had wonderful musical moments throughout your career. Obviously, you won your Oscar for playing June Carter. But I also think of the "mic dropped" musical moments throughout scenes in your career. Which is a more influential, important scene in your respective careers? Counting Crows in the, and of course, Cruel Intentions? Or Frankie Goes to Hollywood in Zoolander?

• 37:23Josh Horowitz?

More important musical moment in the history of cinema?

• 37:29Speaker 01

  I would say Reese.

• 37:30Speaker 02

  I'd say Zoolander.

• 37:32Josh Horowitz?

Do you know, respectively, what songs were playing in those scenes when you shot them?

• 37:37Speaker 02

  No.

• 37:38Josh Horowitz?

That's something that Roger and whoever afterwards decided.

• 37:40Speaker 02

All I remember is Roger covered putting "Bittersweet Symphony" at the end of Cruel Intentions while I drive away in the Jaguar and... No, because what my experience was, is I was driving a rickety, scary, old Jaguar on the Long Island Expressway. And they were like, "Get out of the way!" And I was like, he was like... And I had like a... They were in a helicopter and I had them walking. Not safe.

• 38:03Speaker 01

  Not safe at all.

• 38:04Speaker 02

  Nineties were not safe.

• 38:07Josh Horowitz?

Only thing worse would admit a bear. Don't add that to the mix.

• 38:11Speaker 02

  Add a bear.

• 38:13Josh Horowitz?

All right, our time is short, so I'm gonna end with the Happy Second Fuse profoundly random questions, guys. You ready?

• 38:17Speaker 01

  Ready.

• 38:18Josh Horowitz?

This is important. This is the important stuff. Dogs or cats?

• 38:22Speaker 01

  Dogs.

• 38:22Speaker 02

  Dogs.

• 38:23Josh Horowitz?

That's the correct answer. Thank you.

• 38:26Josh Horowitz?

What do you collect, if anything?

• 38:28Speaker 02

  Spins.

• 38:29Josh Horowitz?

  Do you really?

• 38:30Speaker 02

No. But wouldn't it be cute if I did?

• 38:33Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, it sold it.

• 38:34Speaker 02

Then I could be like, that's, yeah.

• 38:35Josh Horowitz?

  There's the spoon.

• 38:36Speaker 02

  Witherspoon, yeah.

• 38:37Josh Horowitz?

  Got it.

• 38:38Speaker 01

My favorite, my favorite non-real answer is antique pistols.

• 38:45Josh Horowitz?

  Sure.

• 38:45Speaker 01

  My antique pistol collection.

• 38:46Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 38:47Speaker 01

And the people go, really? I go, huh? And then that ends up in an interview.

• 38:51Speaker 02

  What is your most precious?

• 38:52Speaker 01

I guess it's now a collection. I love watches. I have a little Swiss Army one on today.

• 39:01Speaker 02

Watches for guys are like the jewelry.

• 39:03Josh Horowitz?

That's the one, accoutrement, we can do, yeah.

• 39:07Josh Horowitz?

Either of you ever spend any time playing a video game? A video game that you love in your heart of hearts, growing up, what was your favorite game?

• 39:13Speaker 01

Oh, heart of heart. We're talking about arcade game?

• 39:17Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, it could be Atari, stand-up arcade thing. Oh, you got something.

• 39:21Speaker 02

Oh, my brother was, I had a big brother and he was so good at, well, everything. Centipede, Donkey Kong.

• 39:28Speaker 01

  Galaga.

• 39:29Speaker 02

Galaga. Do you remember Dragon Slayer?

• 39:31Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 39:32Speaker 02

  Oh, my God.

• 39:32Josh Horowitz?

  That animation, that beautiful.

• 39:34Speaker 02

  Played so much Mario Kart.

• 39:36Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 39:37Speaker 02

  Zelda.

• 39:39Speaker 01

  I get stressed out.

• 39:40Speaker 02

I played some Fortnite. Have you played Fortnite?

• 39:42Speaker 01

No, I can't. There's too many buttons and controllers and.

• 39:45Speaker 02

I watch, I can watch while the kids play it.

• 39:47Josh Horowitz?

That's the best way to experience it.

• 39:50Speaker 02

And like when they do the dance, it's crazy.

• 39:52Josh Horowitz?

  I can't understand what Fortnite is. I don't, it's hard to explain.

• 39:55Speaker 02

  Well, let me explain it.

• 39:56Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 39:56Speaker 02

  No, I have no idea.

• 39:59Speaker 01

You run around this made up land.

• 40:01Speaker 02

And there's another thing, and then you wear a skin.

• 40:05Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 40:05Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 40:05Speaker 02

And then sometimes you like do a dance, like.

• 40:08Speaker 01

  And then you wait.

• 40:09Speaker 02

  And like if you.

• 40:10Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 40:10Speaker 01

  Person wait, like over here.

• 40:12Speaker 02

And then you do the whip, and then you nae nae, like that.

• 40:15Josh Horowitz?

  Thank you.

• 40:15Speaker 02

  That's what it is.

• 40:16Josh Horowitz?

Now I get it, now I get it.

• 40:17Speaker 02

And then sometimes Travis, like does a concert in the middle, and then you just stop.

• 40:21Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 40:22Speaker 02

  That's right.

• 40:23Josh Horowitz?

Would you rather be four feet taller or four feet shorter?

• 40:29Speaker 02

Whoa, that's really short for me. I'd be like underground, or I would be, I would be the size of a stool, a foot stool.

• 40:40Speaker 01

You'd be? Well, I would be, I'd rather be two feet tall than 10 feet tall, I think.

• 40:45Speaker 02

  Why? I don't know.

• 40:49Josh Horowitz?

You can get it to small places.

• 40:51Speaker 01

Can you imagine being 10 feet tall?

• 40:53Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 40:53Speaker 01

Everything would hurt all the time.

• 40:55Speaker 02

You probably hit the door, right?

• 40:56Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 40:57Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 40:57Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 40:58Speaker 01

  But then, you're right. I'd be, I'm 6'3", so I'd be 2'3".

• 41:04Josh Horowitz?

It might limit your career options, too, like the, just the roles.

• 41:09Speaker 02

  Or?

• 41:09Josh Horowitz?

Or open up a whole new.

• 41:11Speaker 02

  Or?

• 41:11Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah. No, you're right.

• 41:12Speaker 02

Like the newest, the next chapter.

• 41:14Speaker 01

That is such a terrible question. Does anyone like that question?

• 41:17Josh Horowitz?

  That's my favorite question.

• 41:19Speaker 02

  What, who answers that well?

• 41:21Josh Horowitz?

I don't, nobody does, but I enjoy it. What's the wallpaper on your phone?

• 41:25Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 41:26Speaker 01

  My family.

• 41:26Speaker 02

  It's my kids.

• 41:27Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 41:28Josh Horowitz?

  Good, this is appropriate.

• 41:30Speaker 01

  My second family.

• 41:34Josh Horowitz?

Last actor you were mistaken for. Does it ever happen?

• 41:38Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 41:38Josh Horowitz?

  Really?

• 41:39Speaker 02

  It happens to me sometimes.

• 41:42Speaker 02

Sometimes Kristen Bell, who I love.

• 41:44Josh Horowitz?

  Sure.

• 41:45Speaker 02

So that one's always a big compliment. Yeah. Kristen, or sometimes Alicia Silverstone, early in my career. People would say, are you, because she did Clue, so I did Legally Blonde.

• 41:55Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 41:55Speaker 02

  Naturally.

• 41:57Josh Horowitz?

  Sure.

• 41:59Speaker 01

  Of course.

• 42:00Josh Horowitz?

  Chad.

• 42:00Speaker 01

  Chad Smith.

• 42:01Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 42:01Speaker 01

  Read out Chili Peppers.

• 42:04Speaker 01

  Reference in the movie.

• 42:07Speaker 01

Someone goes on a Chili Peppers run, over here.

• 42:09Josh Horowitz?

You brought it back, you did it.

• 42:13Speaker 01

I had the craziest, early SNL days, in fact, was at the Dean in DeLuca. I don't know if it's still there, off the ice skating rink.

• 42:22Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, it's over there.

• 42:23Speaker 01

And I walked in there, and I didn't have a lot of notoriety at that. They were like, hi.

• 42:32Speaker 01

Are you, I know who you are. I'm like, oh, really? Oh, well, how are you? He's like, you're on MASH, aren't you?

• 42:39Josh Horowitz?

  Oh.

• 42:40Speaker 01

And I go, but not Mike Farrell.

• 42:42Josh Horowitz?

Oh, that's what I was gonna say.

• 42:42Speaker 01

  The other, uh.

• 42:44Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 42:45Speaker 01

  The first BJ.

• 42:46Josh Horowitz?

  Jamie Farr?

• 42:46Speaker 01

  The first BJ Honeycutt.

• 42:48Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 42:49Speaker 02

  Yeah, I see that.

• 42:50Speaker 01

And, huh, I forget what that actor's name is. He's now like a stock analyst on Fox News.

• 42:56Josh Horowitz?

  What?

• 42:57Speaker 01

And they're like, I was like, no, I'm, I'm not that actor. And, and she was like. Okay.

• 43:07Speaker 01

Can we still take a photo? I'm like, sure. So she probably went home to Indiana saying, here's the guy from MASH. And they're like, no, it's not. Not that exciting.

• 43:17Josh Horowitz?

No, it is. It's good. Worst, worst note.

• 43:21Josh Horowitz?

  Don't undercut your own brilliance.

• 43:22Speaker 02

You can take that one off the list of like.

• 43:25Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, talk show story. That won't be on Colbert. Worst note a director has ever given you?

• 43:30Speaker 02

  Note?

• 43:31Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 43:31Speaker 02

  Or a no?

• 43:32Josh Horowitz?

No, not a note, a note. What's that, what's that unhelpful thing you've been given? You don't have to name names.

• 43:36Speaker 02

I was once told to sparkle and I wanted to punch him in the face.

• 43:39Speaker 01

  Oh, that is so good.

• 43:44Speaker 02

  I don't, I don't remember.

• 43:45Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 43:46Speaker 02

  I didn't say anything, but.

• 43:47Josh Horowitz?

  That's a hard one.

• 43:48Speaker 01

I once had a director come in and go, that's never going in the movie. Okay.

• 43:54Speaker 01

  Reset.

• 43:57Speaker 01

  I had that once.

• 43:58Speaker 02

  That's mean.

• 43:59Speaker 01

  And then, uh,

• 44:02Speaker 01

  what else?

• 44:04Speaker 01

Oh, Woody Allen. I did a Woody, the Woody Allen movie.

• 44:10Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, Melinda.

• 44:11Speaker 02

  No.

• 44:12Speaker 01

Melinda, Melinda. Woody Allen came and was like, I don't know how to say this, but you're coming off nasty.

• 44:20Speaker 01

I'm like, okay. So, you know, like, it's a comedy.

• 44:24Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 44:25Speaker 01

Like, I'm not trying to come off nasty.

• 44:30Josh Horowitz?

And lastly. Lastly, in the spirit of happy, sad, confused, an actor who always makes you happy. You see them on screen, you're instantly happier.

• 44:36Speaker 02

  Will Ferrell.

• 44:39Josh Horowitz?

You better have the right answer, kind Will.

• 44:42Speaker 01

  I do.

• 44:44Josh Horowitz?

  And it is?

• 44:46Speaker 01

What's her name? We were just talking about her. Gabor, Joaquin Gabor.

• 44:52Josh Horowitz?

  That's the answer.

• 44:56Speaker 02

Tip of my tongue, tip of my tongue.

• 44:58Speaker 01

  Josh Higginbotham.

• 44:59Speaker 02

  Josh Higginbotham.

• 44:59Josh Horowitz?

A movie that makes you sad, always.

• 45:04Speaker 02

Oh, what's that movie with Will Smith and his little boy?

• 45:07Josh Horowitz?

  Oh, Pursuit of Happyness.

• 45:08Speaker 02

  I can't, I can't.

• 45:11Speaker 02

  I can't.

• 45:13Speaker 01

Movie that always makes me sad.

• 45:16Josh Horowitz?

You have no capacity for empathy, yeah, you, so.

• 45:20Speaker 01

I mean, it's, this isn't quite the right answer, but it makes me sad and it makes me so happy. It's a wonderful life.

• 45:26Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, sure.

• 45:29Josh Horowitz?

And a food that makes you confused.

• 45:31Speaker 01

I thought you were gonna say a food that makes you sad.

• 45:34Josh Horowitz?

You can go there too if you want.

• 45:35Speaker 02

  Borscht, okay.

• 45:37Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, I don't get that.

• 45:39Speaker 02

  What is a food that?

• 45:42Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, you see on the menu, why do people like that? Why don't get that? I just don't understand the point of it.

• 45:46Speaker 02

  Smoked salmon on a burger.

• 45:48Speaker 01

  Really?

• 45:49Josh Horowitz?

  Oh.

• 45:50Speaker 02

I don't understand smoked fish. That's probably because of where I'm from.

• 45:56Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, we all have that.

• 45:56Speaker 01

I don't understand, and you may get mad at me, I don't know what your stance on this is.

• 46:02Speaker 01

I could never wrap my head around okra, boiled okra.

• 46:06Speaker 02

  I, we're not friends, clearly.

• 46:09Speaker 01

I can do fried, but I can't do-

• 46:11Speaker 02

I can eat fried, yeah, no, I hear you.

• 46:12Speaker 01

  I can't do a boiled okra, I don't get it.

• 46:14Speaker 02

  Yeah, it's slimy.

• 46:15Speaker 01

  I don't get okra.

• 46:16Speaker 02

  It's disgusting, it's a little slimy.

• 46:17Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 46:19Speaker 02

  Not a gumbo fan.

• 46:20Speaker 01

No, I can do gumbo, because I can kind of work my way around.

• 46:24Josh Horowitz?

  It's a project.

• 46:24Speaker 01

  And leave the okra.

• 46:25Speaker 02

You just pick around the okra.

• 46:26Speaker 01

And fried okra, there's enough crunch.

• 46:28Speaker 02

  That's delicious.

• 46:31Josh Horowitz?

America's sweetheart no more, you're still America's sweetheart, congratulations.

• 46:34Speaker 01

She wins out, 10 times out of 10.

• 46:37Josh Horowitz?

The movie, once again, has alligators, great star performances, super funny, relatable.

• 46:42Speaker 02

I heard it's the best movie of the year.

• 46:43Josh Horowitz?

That's the early word on that picture.

• 46:47Josh Horowitz?

The early word, early betting is-

• 46:49Speaker 01

I heard it's better than Wicked.

• 46:51Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 46:51Speaker 01

  That's what we're hearing.

• 46:52Speaker 02

We're hearing, a lot of people saying.

• 46:54Speaker 01

  A lot of people saying.

• 46:55Speaker 02

Have you seen Wicked? This is better.

• 46:57Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 46:58Speaker 01

  Most people are saying-

• 46:59Josh Horowitz?

Can you name some people, okay, we're not gonna name names, it's okay, because we don't want to embarrass people.

• 47:04Speaker 01

The people we have talked to-

• 47:05Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 47:05Speaker 01

  Are saying-

• 47:06Speaker 02

  They've worked on it.

• 47:07Josh Horowitz?

It's better than Wicked. I will vouch, I'm not gonna compare and contrast, it's, Wicked's great, this is great.

• 47:13Speaker 01

That's not your job, we're just telling you what we heard.

• 47:16Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 47:18Josh Horowitz?

It's good to see you both.

• 47:19Speaker 01

  Great to see you.

• 47:22Josh Horowitz?

Thank you guys. You're awesome. Thank you both. This was fun. Thank you.
