The last scene was with me and Katrina. And it was a very emotional scene and there were a lot of people that came to watch. I think all the crew came and there was like 300 people watching and it was a very long scene. And at the end, I think we both just were kind of messy crying. And Maril was worse.

Prepare your ears, humans. Happy Sad Confused begins now.

• 1:27Josh Horowitz?

I'm Josh Horowitz and today on Happy Sad Confused, Sam Heughan is back, everybody. Welcome to another edition of the podcast. Usually we launch right into the main event before we go to my live conversation tape at the 92nd Street Y with the one and only Sam Heughan. I wanted to remind folks of some cool things that Happy Sad Confused offers. I don't mention it enough, and I'm just gonna say it. If you're not checking out the Happy Sad Confused Patreon, give it a shot. We're doing so much for you over there. Happy Sad Confused's Patreon, rather, it's patreon.com/happysadconfused. Over there, you get early access to every single episode, video and audio. You get upcoming guest announcements, you get ticket discounts, you get autographed

• 2:11Josh Horowitz?

posters from many of our events. You can ask a question to our guests. All of that and more at patreon.com/happysadconfused. I don't mention it enough and it's important frankly, guys, because it keeps Happy Sad Confused in business. If you'd been a Patreon member prior to this Sam Heughan event, you might have been able to ask Sam a question. We did offer up some questions. We still have posters autographed Sam Heughan and Outlander Cast posters available. So, check it out. Patreon.com/happy/sadconfused. Support the show. We've been going for 10 years. We're going to continue on for 10 more. If Patreon keeps us afloat, and you guys are a big part of that. Okay, so the main event

• 2:53Josh Horowitz?

today is Sam Heughan. The other reason I wanted to tape, record on this little intro before you go to the main event is, these, these events sometimes play better on camera than off. Usually they play better, they play just as well in audio form or video form. This one in particular has sections that will play really best on, in a video format. So if you're listening to this, in your ears, on your podcast feed, I love you. This is how I consume podcasts too. But consider checking out the YouTube channel, the YouTube version of this at youtube.com/joshhorowitz. Because there are sections of this, including Sam showing me how to make a cocktail, that will play better in video form. So that's

• 3:38Josh Horowitz?

my preamble. Check it out. You know, consume it however you want. Audio, video, whatever you like, as long as you're checking out Happy Sad Confused. I love you. Stick with us. This was recorded at the 92nd Street Y. This is really, probably maybe now our most frequent guest. He is always a delight. The crowd was electric that night. He was talking about the couple next door, about the end of Outlander, about his new cocktail book. We had a blast. A lot, a lot of laughs, to say the least. So, I hope you enjoy this. And if you want to see us in person, see me in person, we have a lot cooking. We have an event with Michelle Yeoh on January 23rd at the 92nd Street Y. We're going to be screening

• 4:20Josh Horowitz?

Star Trek: Section 31, the new movie for Paramount Plus, and some more live events coming very, very soon. Again, you're going to get the early info, the dirt on all of that, over at the Patreon. Alright, enough, enough shilling. I know, you want to see Sam Heughan. Please enjoy this amazing chat with the one and only Sam Heughan, recorded at the 92nd Street Y in New York City. Hi, hello everybody. Welcome. I'm Josh Horowitz.

• 4:47Josh Horowitz?

Happy, sad, confused. We're live at the 92nd Street Y, guys, with Sam Hewin! Here we are! You know Sam Hewin. He's the king of men. He's the king of wet t-shirts. He's practically royalty on this podcast. I can't think of a better person to start off the new year at 92nd Street Y for me than the guy that's gonna come onstage in just a second. So, thank you, guys, so much for coming out tonight.

• 5:15Josh Horowitz?

I wanted to say, since this is my first live event of the new year, I want to send all the love out there to the folks on the West Coast. We're thinking of you, what a horrible time it is, and rooting for, you know, speedy recovery for everybody. But, yeah, I just wanted to put that out there. As for tonight, we're gonna let loose and have some fun with one of our favorite guests on Happy, Sad, Confused. He's got a lot going on. We are seeing the end of season seven of Outlander momentarily. We're seeing the beginning of The Couple Next Door momentarily. This audience in New York just saw the first episode. Did you like, guys? They like.

• 5:54Josh Horowitz?

Give a warm New York City welcome, a warm 92nd Street Y welcome, to the one and only Mr. Sam Hewin, everybody!

• 6:12Josh Horowitz?

  This guy.

• 6:14Speaker 02

Hi, New York. How are ya?

• 6:17Speaker 02

Oh, my God! So nice to be back at 92Y. I mean, you guys, this is like coming home, right?

• 6:25Josh Horowitz?

You have been here quite a bit, almost as much as I have. Welcome back, Sam.

• 6:28Speaker 02

Yeah, this is, I asked them to get new furniture, but they, yeah, it was a...

• 6:33Josh Horowitz?

  It's cozy.

• 6:34Speaker 02

It's cozy. Here, I just want to say as well, we are sending our love to everyone on the West Coast. It's been kinda crazy, but we hope everyone has a speedy recovery.

• 6:42Josh Horowitz?

  Exactly.

• 6:43Speaker 02

Yeah, thank you for saying that.

• 6:45Josh Horowitz?

Welcome back. We were kind of, I know, I speak for everybody here, we were kinda hoping the wet t-shirt would continue into the beginning.

• 6:51Speaker 02

They said, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait a minute. Firstly, he looks good, doesn't he?"

• 6:55Josh Horowitz?

  Oh, stop it.

• 6:56Speaker 02

Look, and we are kinda dressed the same. Look!

• 6:59Josh Horowitz?

  Stop it.

• 7:00Speaker 02

  Look, look at it.

• 7:03Josh Horowitz?

  Easy for you to say.

• 7:04Speaker 02

  It's really soft as well.

• 7:05Josh Horowitz?

  Okay, don't...

• 7:07Speaker 02

I think he's been taking tips.

• 7:09Josh Horowitz?

  From the king of men?

• 7:11Speaker 02

  From... From my stylist.

• 7:15Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 7:17Josh Horowitz?

Ever since we did that gym sketch years ago, I've had to up my game.

• 7:20Speaker 02

  That's it, that's it.

• 7:21Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, when I saw myself in gym shorts next to you, I was like, "Changes need to be made immediately."

• 7:27Speaker 02

  You look great, buddy.

• 7:28Josh Horowitz?

  Thank you, buddy.

• 7:29Speaker 02

  So good to see you.

• 7:30Josh Horowitz?

Congratulations, a lot is going on. I did want to mention, you have been here on Nine Second Street Wives, on the stage here, many times.

• 7:37Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 7:38Josh Horowitz?

Talk to me about growing up. Did you have a theater that was close to you, like a childhood theater you went to that you recall having really sentimental attachment to?

• 7:48Speaker 02

Oh, that's really kind of you to ask, and I have probably told this story a lot. But, yes, yes, I lived in rural Scotland and eventually as a teenager moved to the bright lights of Edinburgh, the capital city, which, has anyone been? Yeah! They've all been, Josh. Why haven't you been?

• 8:09Josh Horowitz?

I haven't been. Must be nice, guys.

• 8:12Speaker 02

Sounds great. And I was fascinated, I went to the theater, I went to the Royal Lyceum Theatre, and the first show I saw was a production of Merlin, and it was all about King Arthur, and I've always been kind of obsessed with that. And I thought, "I think I want to get involved in this world." So I applied for a job as a stage manager, much like the amazing stage managers we have here. "I would have been rubbish if you need anyone. Do not employ me." I firstly went to the Traverse Theatre, which is where I actually made my debut as an actor many years later, but I was so fascinated with watching the other actors on stage, and I was carrying a bit of decking that I dropped it on a stage manager's hand and he had to

• 8:57Speaker 02

go to hospital and get stitches. Then I went to the lyceum and worked as a stagehand, and I had to make cucumber sandwiches. Because I was so useless, they were like, "What can this kid do? He can cut cucumber."

• 9:11Josh Horowitz?

He can't screw that up, right?

• 9:12Speaker 02

And then I was told that I was cutting the cucumber too thick. So, "Do not employ me, thank you."

• 9:17Josh Horowitz?

This makes sense, he was cutting cucumbers backstage.

• 9:19Speaker 02

  I was.

• 9:20Josh Horowitz?

And I was like, "We're about to go onstage and do an interview." You're like, "No, let me cut these cucumbers."

• 9:22Speaker 02

Just wait for the cocktail, Josh.

• 9:27Josh Horowitz?

Do you, okay, we've talked many times on many large stages in front of giant audiences. Do you ever get nervous? You seem always very at ease in front of a crowd.

• 9:36Speaker 02

Really, no. We, that's very kind of you to say, no. I just did Jimmy Fallon.

• 9:41Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 9:41Speaker 02

Which is fantastic. He's on tonight. You should watch. It was a lot of fun. I think it's, I don't know, I do get nervous, but when I see your charming little face and I'm like, it just makes me feel warm inside, actually.

• 9:58Josh Horowitz?

You mentioned, thank you for that. I can't say the feeling is reciprocated. You were, you make me nervous. You were at Fallon.

• 10:05Speaker 02

  Nervous or excited?

• 10:07Josh Horowitz?

Combination, all the feelings at once.

• 10:09Speaker 02

The little, is it like a little tickle in your stomach?

• 10:14Josh Horowitz?

  At Fallon?

• 10:15Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 10:17Josh Horowitz?

Who else was on the show? Did you meet anybody over there?

• 10:19Speaker 02

Well, I did meet a very, very wonderful woman. J Lo wasn't there. Lupe, J Lo's mom, who is in the audience, I believe. I hope she is. Thank you so much, Lupe, if you're here. If you're not, she lied to me. Thank you, I got this wonderful present. Yes, very, very lucky. So, thank you, Lupe.

• 10:50Josh Horowitz?

  Amazing.

• 10:50Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 10:51Josh Horowitz?

Have you ever met her daughter?

• 10:53Speaker 02

J Lo? No, no, no, not yet.

• 11:01Josh Horowitz?

One day, one day. All right, so this audience here in New York City has just seen the first episode of your new show. Congratulations, man.

• 11:08Speaker 02

How was it? You like it? Good, thank you. Yeah.

• 11:12Josh Horowitz?

It's gonna be on Starz, The Couple Next Door, six parts. When this one comes around, give us a sense. How does this one come around? How's it presented to you? What gets you excited about it?

• 11:20Speaker 02

Oh, right, yes, yes. So, Driss Vos is this genius Belgian director who I worked with on a show called Suspect. Very lucky to do an episode of that, which is a highly successful show for Channel 4. This show aired, actually... I think last year in the UK and it was their most streamed show ever, which is pretty cool. Um, yeah, no, it was awesome. And so then I got sent this and it was very lucky because the show fitted into between seasons of Outlander. I think it was six and seven or maybe something like that. And, um, yeah, we're shooting in the Netherlands in Belgium and honestly, just the character's so interesting.

• 12:00Speaker 02

I think you think he's one thing, you know, he's sort of a bit toxic, um, alpha male. You make assumptions about all these characters and I think every episode, your preconceptions are going to be slightly changed and your allegiance to each character is going to be changed and it gets quite dark. Um, a lot of them have got a lot of secrets and I just loved it. It was so fun and this cast is so talented. I mean, Eleanor Thomason is just, she's brilliant. Any Pollock fans out there. Jess DeGaw is just gorgeously brilliant. Alfred Inoch, of course, is amazing. Um, we got on so well and we had so much fun with the crew as well.

• 12:39Josh Horowitz?

Do you, had you worked with any of them before? Were these all newbies?

• 12:42Speaker 02

Uh, I don't, no, no, all newbies.

• 12:44Josh Horowitz?

So what, do you, do you vet folks? Do they vet you? Like what happens when you're, because this is, this is kind of a forehander. I mean, it's an ensemble, but these four characters, they need to work. The guys need to kind of gel.

• 12:55Speaker 02

  They do.

• 12:56Josh Horowitz?

So do you ask friends of friends, like, hey, have you worked with this person?

• 12:59Speaker 02

Um, Eleanor's ginger, so I liked her.

• 13:02Josh Horowitz?

Right, that, okay. That's your only criteria.

• 13:05Speaker 02

Uh, you know, it's funny, actually. So firstly, uh, I did a sort of chemistry test, one of those awful things they make you do on Zoom these days, which is just like the worst way to see if anyone has chemistry. Cause you're going, what? Uh, and you're speaking over each other. Jess was just brilliant. She played the character in three different accents. She just did all the direction. She kept changing it up and I was like, she's amazing. She's such a talent. Eleanor, I knew of friends of friends and we realized we are the same person, only a different sex. And, um, we got on so well and Alfred is just such a gentleman, highly intelligent,

• 13:47Speaker 02

brilliant fun, really relaxed and instantly we knew, especially with Dries, this crazy genius, that it was going to be a lot of fun to make.

• 13:55Josh Horowitz?

I mean, hopefully, I mean, you're big time Sam Hugh and now you don't have to audition all that much, but when you do, do you prefer a Zoom audition or an in-person one at this point?

• 14:03Speaker 02

Oh my God, Josh, I'm unemployed now. That's why I'm here. Give me a job.

• 14:11Speaker 02

Stage crew, if you need anyone, I'm available.

• 14:13Josh Horowitz?

  Cucumber sandwiches.

• 14:14Speaker 02

Cucumber sandwiches. And I'm unemployed, so I have no idea. I'm very lucky, you know, I get offered some stuff. My manager's here. He shakes his head and I say, "Okay, we'll not do that." So, yeah, I don't know.

• 14:28Josh Horowitz?

Are you a good neighbor? This is a show about two couples, two sets of neighbors.

• 14:33Speaker 02

No, I'm terrible. I'm terrible. I'm the one with binoculars.

• 14:37Josh Horowitz?

  What?

• 14:38Speaker 02

Yeah. I'm like peeking through the curtains, like, "What's going on over there?" That's definitely, I've definitely got a drug dealer near my house.

• 14:50Josh Horowitz?

Would you help a neighbor, would you help me with a move?

• 14:55Josh Horowitz?

  Hey Sam, I'm moving tomorrow.

• 14:56Speaker 02

No, I wouldn't answer my phone or whatever the doorbell is. I'm like, "No, I'm not." No, I just realized this. I was doing press the other day. I'm like, "I now live in suburbia." So I actually am one of these people. Which is kinda weird, so, yeah. Are you a good neighbor?

• 15:15Josh Horowitz?

I try not to talk to anybody at all. I'm a New Yorker through and through.

• 15:19Speaker 02

Yeah, right, it's great. It's perfect.

• 15:21Josh Horowitz?

I don't know my neighbors. I've lived in the same place for about five, six years. Don't know, couldn't name one person I lived near.

• 15:26Speaker 02

But that's what's interesting about this show. It's like you're, we're kind of all separated, especially in suburbia. And we were like, kind of interested. And we were like, "What is going on behind that door?" These people are all very like, you know, on the outside, it's a beautiful life and a beautiful family, but what's really happening, Josh? What's really happening in your house? I wanna know. You've never invited me.

• 15:51Josh Horowitz?

No, we need boundaries. There are so few boundaries left between us.

• 15:54Speaker 02

Coming to your house. If you don't invite me, I'm just gonna turn up.

• 15:57Josh Horowitz?

  Gosh.

• 16:00Josh Horowitz?

Where do you stand? Yeah, we could get, not to...

• 16:03Speaker 02

  Hello?

• 16:05Josh Horowitz?

  Pretend we're not here.

• 16:07Speaker 02

  There's a light on.

• 16:10Josh Horowitz?

We could get massages together, like you and your buddy.

• 16:12Speaker 02

  What?

• 16:16Josh Horowitz?

I don't want to ruin anything coming up in the show, but there's a scene where you and your co-star, they get massages together.

• 16:23Speaker 02

  Um, yeah.

• 16:25Josh Horowitz?

Oh, I made it weird. You're like barging into my apartment.

• 16:29Speaker 02

Yeah, but that's a TV show.

• 16:33Speaker 02

If we ever get a massage. I mean, we've done pretty much everything else.

• 16:36Josh Horowitz?

Yeah. Where do you stand on couples vacations? You and a partner, me and my wife, we all go together for a nice couples vacation.

• 16:44Speaker 02

I mean, are you inviting me? Where are we going?

• 16:46Josh Horowitz?

  Where should we go?

• 16:47Speaker 02

  Um, Nepal.

• 16:50Josh Horowitz?

  What a segue.

• 16:53Josh Horowitz?

Okay, we'll come back to Couple Next Door.

• 16:54Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 16:55Josh Horowitz?

But since you brought that up.

• 16:56Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 16:56Josh Horowitz?

  Let's talk about Nepal.

• 16:58Speaker 02

  Let's, yeah.

• 16:59Josh Horowitz?

Oh, my God, this is like the journey of a lifetime.

• 17:01Speaker 02

Thank you, oh, thank you, thank you.

• 17:02Josh Horowitz?

You guys know Sam very recently took this trip. How long has this been in the planning? What happened? Give us a footnote version.

• 17:11Speaker 02

Yeah, okay, so, I mean, I guess I've always been, you know, really interested by Everest and just the romance of it. I then was supposed to do a movie with Doug Liman, directing, and Ewan McGregor. Kind of weird combination, right? But, and myself. All about George Mallory, who was, who possibly reached the summit in the 20s. And in that time, you know, he went up, you know, in tweeds and, and, you know, with champagne and caviar, which sounds like my kind of adventure. And, um, yeah, he quite possibly got to the top. Anyway, this movie never happened due to scheduling and COVID.

• 17:50Speaker 02

However, I met this amazing gentleman, mountaineer called Jake Norton, who's just an incredible man. And we struck up a friendship. And he was like, why don't we just go to Everest ourselves? And do it. And I thought it was a great way to finish Outlander, because we just finished season eight of Outlander. I was like, I'm gonna go do that to sort of end that chapter. And it was honestly just exceptional. We, very briefly, we did a route that's never been done before. We flew to a small village called Ches Cam, and we went through the Hunkakola Valley for two weeks. Camping and getting higher and higher until we got up to very high altitude.

• 18:29Speaker 02

Where we got up to about twenty thousand feet and then had to rappel into the Kumbu Valley. Several thousand feet of rappelling down like rock and ice and then another four days to get to Everest Base Camp. So it was a real adventure, for sure.

• 18:46Josh Horowitz?

Leads to a question I was gonna ask. I asked for some questions from our happy second fuse listeners. Sabrina wanted to know, were you scared at any point during this latest adventure?

• 18:54Speaker 02

It's honestly, I, you know, I like an adventure and I like hanging out with you, Josh, but sometimes, you know, sometimes I take off too much and I have to admit, you know, two weeks of hiking and sleeping in a tent and, you know, there's no bathrooms, there's no showers, you're sleeping at night where your tent is freezing and when you get above this certain altitude, you know, you're throwing up, you can't breathe, you can't sleep, you're having the weirdest dreams if you do sleep. It was very, very difficult and on the last day when we were very high on the Ampelatza Pass, I watched a couple of our porters go down on these ropes and I started crying because I was like, what if we lose someone?

• 19:38Speaker 02

And I'm laughing, but I'm not laughing, but I'm, I was like, it just, this is such a precarious situation. Anything could go wrong here. And actually Jake went down the mountain here and he disappeared for about an hour and a half and I was like, what is going on? And they were laying down new, new fixed lines, but yeah, there were many moments I was like, what am I doing? Where is Josh? What am I doing? I would have died as I was getting my boots on, I would have just like collapsed. I mean, even, even getting your boots on is such an effort and I have to say a huge shout out to all the, our porters who were incredible, these people, we were with the Rye tribe who were kind of lesser known, everyone here is of Sherpas, but that's actually a tribe.

• 20:20Speaker 02

So we had a main Sherpa who had been up Everest eighteen times and they just had amazing stories. But our Rye, who were the local porters, were just so hardworking and incredible and we got invited to a wedding when we were in their village, which is just such an amazing experience. And then the whole village turned out, the whole school did this ceremony for us, which lasted about three hours because everyone in the village wanted to make a speech and they're...

• 20:47Josh Horowitz?

  Big Outlander fans.

• 20:48Speaker 02

  Big Outlander fans.

• 20:49Josh Horowitz?

  Who knew?

• 20:50Speaker 02

Come to the heart of Outlander. And their English wasn't so great, but at one point I did hear them introduce me. And they said, among other things, that I had four million followers on Instagram. And I think that was for them.

• 21:03Josh Horowitz?

  The currency of the day.

• 21:04Speaker 02

That's it. I reached fame at last.

• 21:07Josh Horowitz?

Is this, did you document this at all? Is this gonna be something?

• 21:10Speaker 02

I did think about it and I'm still not sure. I mean, I thought about maybe a book or something, but honestly, I felt like I wanted to do it for myself. And, you know, I was tempted to text you occasionally, but honestly, there was no reception. We got, you know, for two weeks, it was actually glorious.

• 21:29Josh Horowitz?

All right, so that sounds like an amazing and the perfect thing, as you said, coming out of an epic 10 years of Outlander.

• 21:35Speaker 02

  Right, yeah.

• 21:36Josh Horowitz?

  Amazing.

• 21:43Josh Horowitz?

If I had a dollar for everybody in my life who's benefited from therapy, I would be a very, very rich man. Therapy has certainly helped me, especially when I was a confused teenager. And thankfully, that's not a shameful thing to say anymore, right? It's okay to seek help and need help and talk about it. We're all doing our best. We're just trying to get by, right, guys? Unfortunately, the reality is that getting help is still harder than it should be. That's why I'm thrilled always to have Rula as a sponsor of Happy Say Confuse, because it's very obvious to me that online therapy should be both accessible and affordable for everybody. So let's make it easy for anybody who wants help to get help. That's where Rula comes in. Here's the thing, a lot of online therapy platforms don't actually talk about. Most don't take insurance.

• 22:28Josh Horowitz?

That means you're either paying out of pocket or signing up for some very expensive monthly subscription. Rula does it all differently. • 25:10Josh Horowitz?

All right, so just circling back to this new endeavor, Couple Next Door. You know, when you switch productions, like when you get on set of Outlander, you know the deal by now, you have the comfort of knowing everybody. Do you still, do you get butterflies when you start a new production with a new gang?

• 25:26Speaker 02

Yeah, absolutely, you know. I think it was such a short period of time for us to prep. I literally think we had four days rehearsals. We got to Belgium and, you know, meeting these new actors and I knew of the work they'd done, so of course you're like, "God, can I do this? Can I act outside of Outlander because I've been doing it for so long?" And then we were just welcomed by the crew there and things operate very differently out there. There were this tiny crew, you know, I've come from Outlander where we have hundreds of crew and it's vast workshops and dresses to maybe 20, 30 people max. And they operate very differently. We didn't have trailers there.

• 26:09Speaker 02

At lunchtime and breakfast, you go get your own breakfast and lunch and you sit with the crew and pretty much every week we had a party. They were just so welcoming and we just kind of all mucked in and it was just such an amazing experience. And also, the way that Dris works is that he takes like one take sometimes and maybe he puts the camera behind your head and that's it. So it's the back of your head like, "Wait, are you not getting any coverage of this?" Whereas on Outlander, you know, it's such a big production, they'll shoot 30 takes of everyone's reaction.

• 26:40Josh Horowitz?

Playing a dad, are you, do children, do children like you, Sam Heughan? Children can't see much of your work. I mean, do you remind, do you remind the child, like, "I played Batman once, trust me"?

• 26:55Speaker 02

Do you know what? My first scene of the whole show was with, I think his name is Noel, and he's a partially deaf actor, and that was our first scene and it's Danny's sort of trying to create a bond with his son who he's not very close with. And we were in this bowling alley and it was such a beautiful scene and it's really hard because... You know, they're both trying to communicate, but they can't communicate and they're, they're, they're trying to get close. Anyway, as soon as they, we called rap, me and Noah went off and we were like bowling. Um, and we sent each other gifs and I, I, I got on really well with him and uh, the other kid who was playing our son as well. He, they were just um, just such great kids. So I, I guess they like me.

• 27:40Josh Horowitz?

  You're a big kid.

• 27:41Speaker 02

  Maybe.

• 27:42Josh Horowitz?

  Would you rather?

• 27:43Speaker 02

I, I text Robbie a lot who's on Outlander. He's Ferguson Marsley's son. Um, he texts me a lot because we bonded over Lego.

• 27:52Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 27:52Josh Horowitz?

Is Lego a big part of your life? I didn't realize that.

• 27:54Speaker 02

  It is. It is.

• 27:58Josh Horowitz?

  It, it, and.

• 27:59Speaker 02

I wonder if you could get a little Lego Josh? That would be cool.

• 28:03Josh Horowitz?

Be wonderful. Wait, so how, do you, I have so many questions.

• 28:06Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 28:08Josh Horowitz?

Is there Lego in your home? Like?

• 28:09Speaker 02

  Yeah, quite a lot, yeah.

• 28:11Josh Horowitz?

  How often do you Lego?

• 28:12Speaker 02

  Never.

• 28:12Josh Horowitz?

  Is Lego a verb?

• 28:14Speaker 02

  I, I don't know.

• 28:15Josh Horowitz?

  To Lego.

• 28:16Speaker 02

Lego. I've got um, I've got a Lego R2-D2 that I started years ago and it hasn't even come anywhere. I've been sent by fans, there's R2 here.

• 28:27Speaker 02

Been sent by fans lots of Lego. It's been, yeah, it's, it's something that I grew up with as a kid and uh, probably weird kid that's on his own, playing with little plastic figures, talking to them. Much like you did, probably.

• 28:40Josh Horowitz?

He doesn't need that, he's fine.

• 28:42Speaker 02

What did you play as a kid?

• 28:43Josh Horowitz?

Uh, yeah, there was some Lego. There was, yeah.

• 28:47Speaker 02

Did you just talk to yourself in the mirror? Like, hello, interview yourself.

• 28:50Josh Horowitz?

I'm gonna be big and strong one day, yeah. Hello, Mr. Harrison Ford, what do you have to say? That kind of thing.

• 28:55Speaker 02

  Nice to meet you, kid.

• 28:56Josh Horowitz?

Basically what I do still to practice.

• 28:58Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 28:59Josh Horowitz?

Would you rather uh, do a scene on a motorcycle or, or on a horse at this point in your career?

• 29:04Speaker 02

That's a good question. I was asked that yesterday actually, Josh, so you're behind this.

• 29:10Speaker 02

But good question. No, thank you. Ah dang. I think, I love motorbikes and that's partly also a draw of the show for me. I was like, oh my god, I get to ride a bunch of motorbikes and Danny's motorbike is the bike that I always wanted. It's his BMW R90 and I, and I, they got it for me. I'm like, yes. And I went out on it and I was like, I'm gonna kill myself on this bike. It's terrifying, so didn't love that. I think there's too much to think about on a motorbike. Normally when you're riding, you don't think so much, but I don't, but when you're acting, you gotta talk and hit a mark and whatever. And on a horse, if you've got a horse like Sleepy or Jack,

• 29:55Speaker 02

then you never need to think because they just do it for you.

• 29:59Josh Horowitz?

I mean, I would put this show in kind of like the box set of like, you know, The Big Little Lies, even White Lotus. Like basically anything Nicole Kidman's done the last five years. She does like two of these a year.

• 30:09Speaker 02

  Right.

• 30:10Josh Horowitz?

Is that your bag? Like, do you watch those shows? Are there any of those like your favorites?

• 30:13Speaker 02

Yeah, or True Detective, is that what you're saying? You know, things like that. Yeah.

• 30:18Josh Horowitz?

Like sexy adult drama, like stuff that like, kind of like, yeah.

• 30:22Speaker 02

Yeah, I do. Yeah, yeah. I'm basically following Nicole Kidman around and I was asked if I identified with a baby man? No.

• 30:31Josh Horowitz?

  Baby girl?

• 30:31Speaker 02

Baby girl. And I had no idea what that was because I was in Nepal. I couldn't see it, but I will.

• 30:37Josh Horowitz?

You've been watching anything? Have you caught up with anything?

• 30:39Speaker 02

It's been really, I've literally was in Nepal and then I went Switzerland. But yes, I went to the cinema twice in the last two weeks.

• 30:49Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 30:50Speaker 02

  Saw Wicked.

• 30:53Speaker 02

Great, loved it. And I actually went to see Lord of the Rings, the extended version.

• 30:59Josh Horowitz?

  So on brand. Wow.

• 31:00Speaker 02

I know, sorry. I was like, it came on. I was like, yeah, I'm gonna go see that.

• 31:04Josh Horowitz?

Of cour- so wait, was that your first Wicked experience?

• 31:07Speaker 02

It was. It made me realize I really want to go see it on stage. So while I'm in New York, I'd You'll take me. Thank you. I'll go. Yeah. Cool.

• 31:15Josh Horowitz?

Sing us a little Defying Gravity. We'd love to hear that beautiful voice.

• 31:18Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 31:19Josh Horowitz?

We could do a duet. I could be

• 31:21Speaker 02

  Yeah, you dance.

• 31:22Josh Horowitz?

Which one's Linda, which one's Elphaba?

• 31:23Speaker 02

  Well.

• 31:27Speaker 02

  Glenda, right?

• 31:29Josh Horowitz?

Hair flip, I need more hair to do the thing.

• 31:32Speaker 02

I kinda think that might be the next sketch.

• 31:34Josh Horowitz?

We're gonna work on that. We're workshopping in front of all of you.

• 31:38Speaker 02

  I love that.

• 31:39Josh Horowitz?

Well, it's a surprise no one to know that there's a little sexy time in this show. Yeah, fair to say.

• 31:45Speaker 02

  Fair to say.

• 31:47Josh Horowitz?

We've come a long way in the way we approach these scenes. I know you've talked about this with respect to Outlander. Take me back, all the way back in your career. Do you remember like the first kind of intimate scenes you shot? And what it was-

• 31:58Speaker 02

  Oh, of the show?

• 31:59Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, just, uh, uh-

• 32:02Speaker 02

Josh, now we're getting into it.

• 32:03Josh Horowitz?

All right, all right. And just like, how far we've come in how these kinds of scenes are depicted at the beginning of your career versus now?

• 32:14Speaker 02

Yeah, I mean, 100%. I mean, actually, going back earlier, Josh. No, my first ever job in the theater was about a young man who's sort of coming of age and there was an intimate scene. And we were, you know, really well looked after and it was, you know, obviously terrifying to do, especially when your mom is sitting in the front row as close as these young ladies are. But yes, it was, jumping to Outlander, you know, it was a completely different industry 11 years ago. And I think stars itself, you know, had a different ethos.

• 32:53Speaker 02

So, yeah, we've come on a real journey and I think Jamie and Claire have come on this incredible relationship that has developed over time. And going into, I guess, The Couple Next Door,

• 33:06Speaker 02

I'd met Vanessa Koffey, who was our intimacy coordinator. I'd met through my drama school and I invited her to Outlander. And then she came with us to The Couple Next Door because, I don't know, how does it work with four people? I mean, you tell me. It's complicated, right?

• 33:25Josh Horowitz?

  So, yeah. Logistical questions.

• 33:27Speaker 02

It is, it is. But she also, you know, because we were in Belgium, as I said, and, you know, we're working with a small crew. And I guess also, they had never really worked on scenes like that. So, yeah, it's just really helpful to have someone there to make everyone feel comfortable, to protect everyone, and also like explore, like, how do these characters interact?

• 33:50Josh Horowitz?

When you think back to shooting stuff early in Outlander, before there was an intimacy coordinator, like, does, do you shake your head like, "Oh, my God, I can't believe we didn't know to do this in that way that would have made everybody a little bit more comfortable."

• 34:03Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 34:03Josh Horowitz?

We didn't know what we didn't know.

• 34:05Speaker 02

Yeah, I mean, look, there's probably, you know, there's a rawness to the first scenes in Outlander, but it's, that's not just about the way it was shot, it's also just about the relationship, you know, when you start a relationship, there's a lot of lust, right? There's a lot of passion, and I'm not saying Jamie and Claire have either lost their passion or lust, if anything, it's got better, it's just, you know, as you get to learn and love someone, you understand them more and you accept them for who they are and you, you love all of them, and I think, um, yeah, so there's, there's hopefully a difference in, in those early scenes to, to the later ones, of course there are, um, but yeah, did, did we know any better now? I mean, I do feel more experienced in those scenes, for sure.

• 34:49Josh Horowitz?

What's the, besides Outlander, obviously, what's the sexiest movie or TV show of all time?

• 34:56Speaker 02

  Of all time?

• 34:58Josh Horowitz?

Besides Outlander, besides Star Trek: The Next Generation, which obviously is number two.

• 35:02Speaker 02

  Battlestar Galactica.

• 35:04Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, exactly.

• 35:06Speaker 02

  Sexiest TV show?

• 35:07Josh Horowitz?

Either way, TV or film, however you want to do it.

• 35:10Speaker 02

Oh, God, I don't know, I'm not even saying this, I'm not saying.

• 35:13Josh Horowitz?

  You're saying it.

• 35:14Speaker 02

  No, what's yours?

• 35:17Josh Horowitz?

If, if I say one or two, will you say one or two?

• 35:20Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 35:22Josh Horowitz?

Well, I mean, I, look, I came of age in the 90s when there were a lot of, like, the Basic Instincts and all that.

• 35:28Speaker 02

I was gonna say, Basic Instinct, well, I watched it far too young.

• 35:34Speaker 02

Sorry, Mom, but I, but I, I did, and it was fantastic. And, um, weird how you watch those, those movies now, you're like, oh, it's, it's kind of, you know.

• 35:43Josh Horowitz?

  Of a time, yeah.

• 35:44Speaker 02

  Of a time.

• 35:44Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 35:45Speaker 02

Um, more recent years, something sexy, I mean, you're right, Nicole Kidman has done some really amazing stuff, and, um, True Little Lies.

• 35:53Josh Horowitz?

  Big Little Lies.

• 35:53Speaker 02

Big Little Lies, that was super sexy, with Skarsgård, wasn't it?

• 35:56Josh Horowitz?

  Yep.

• 35:57Speaker 02

Really hot, um, but terrifying as well, and, um, I don't know, what, any favorites out there? Of course, Outlander, and The Couple Next Door.

• 36:10Speaker 02

  X-Files?

• 36:13Josh Horowitz?

  Got 500 different answers.

• 36:15Speaker 02

  Game of Thrones.

• 36:17Josh Horowitz?

  Wow, okay.

• 36:17Speaker 02

  All right.

• 36:18Josh Horowitz?

  One to grow on.

• 36:19Speaker 02

  Shooters.

• 36:22Speaker 02

  Lucifer.

• 36:23Josh Horowitz?

You opened this Pandora's box by putting it to the audience.

• 36:26Speaker 02

  The bodyguard?

• 36:30Josh Horowitz?

I didn't hear, but maybe you haven't seen Baby Girl yet.

• 36:32Speaker 02

  Ah, I haven't seen it.

• 36:33Josh Horowitz?

You should check that one out.

• 36:34Speaker 02

  Yeah, I will.

• 36:34Josh Horowitz?

That's one to talk about. Besides feeling exposed in intimate scenes, I would imagine you probably feel pretty exposed dancing. In this series, you do dance.

• 36:43Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 36:45Josh Horowitz?

  On a beach, no less.

• 36:46Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 36:47Josh Horowitz?

Is that a mortifying day on set? Is that... Can you let loose with... I mean, you're an actor. This is part of the gig.

• 36:53Speaker 02

I mean, so the scene is the two couples are, you know, they're really bonding and they decide to go to the beach. And I'm like, where's the beach in Yorkshire? And is it that warm? Well, apparently the beach in Belgium really isn't that warm. It was freezing. So it was this freezing cold day and so windy that we had to move the whole scene from where we were gonna film it on the beach with the sea behind us because the wind was blowing so hard. So we had to shoot it in this small area. And literally between takes, I mean, the girls and myself, we were literally shaking with cold. And of course, the characters are supposed to be like, you know, drinking tequila and having a good time. And then

• 37:35Speaker 02

they start playing sexy music and you're going, "I'm so cold right now. So self-aware." But I think it's a really amazing scene because ultimately, I don't know, Danny's like, he's a bit free and he loves a good time and he's probably high and...

• 37:54Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah. You sold it.

• 37:55Speaker 02

And he loses himself a bit. Yeah, he loses himself in the moment. And I think that's really cool. But, oh my God, yeah. Not my proudest moment.

• 38:04Josh Horowitz?

Well, it's second probably to another dance scene in your career that I happen to find. Do you remember a scene in A Princess for Christmas where you danced?

• 38:17Josh Horowitz?

Shut all the exit doors. Do not leave, Sam. We're about to show a clip from a princess

• 38:23Speaker 02

  Aye.

• 38:23Josh Horowitz?

of business. Of you. Of you dancing. And when I found this on the interweb, it was a special moment in my life.

• 38:32Speaker 02

Josh, before you play this, just know what you are beginning here. Just realize that you have just crossed the boundary. And there will be revenge, but it will be served cold.

• 38:48Josh Horowitz?

Roll the clip. Here we go.

• 38:52Speaker 05

  Come on, loosen up.

• 38:55Speaker 05

  Yeah. Come on.

• 38:58Speaker 06

I'm not really the funky type.

• 39:00Speaker 05

Well, don't worry, because I am. Jamnastic lessons of YMCA.

• 39:15Speaker 05

I know you're a princess, but I think you've got some dancing there somewhere. Yeah.

• 40:01Speaker 02

Yeah, I'm pretty happy with that.

• 40:04Josh Horowitz?

  I know that's

• 40:04Speaker 02

  Actually, pretty good.

• 40:05Josh Horowitz?

Yeah. I know that felt like six hours. It was only a minute. A minute passed. But it was like Interstellar. There was no sense of actual time.

• 40:11Speaker 02

Yes, yeah. Yeah, it did go on for a while.

• 40:15Josh Horowitz?

  Fond memories of that?

• 40:17Speaker 02

  Oh, boy. You really...

• 40:19Josh Horowitz?

Do you have anything to say?

• 40:19Speaker 02

Look, I mean, it's funny, isn't it? Like, there are a few movies out there that were things I've done in the past, you know, in your early career, where you're like, um, working as a jobbing actor or working in a bar, and then they're like, "Hey, do you wanna be in this movie?" "Yes, I will be in this movie." And actually, I loved that, had a great time. That was in Transylvania in Romania. Um, Katie McGrath, who's, you know, a great talent. Um, we had a good time, and I think I'm a pretty good dancer.

• 40:47Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 40:56Speaker 05

• 42:55Josh Horowitz?

Shall we talk a little Outlander?

• 42:56Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 42:57Josh Horowitz?

  Outlander!

• 42:58Speaker 02

I'm just thinking about ways I'm gonna get you back.

• 43:01Josh Horowitz?

  Focus up.

• 43:02Speaker 02

  It's gonna be so good.

• 43:03Josh Horowitz?

No, no. Season seven, second part of the season, we are careening towards the finale. A lot happened in this last episode.

• 43:11Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 43:12Josh Horowitz?

Resignation, Claire's not doing so great.

• 43:15Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 43:16Josh Horowitz?

Reflect on those past episodes as we go into the finale.

• 43:19Speaker 02

Oh, yeah. I mean, I said, these are my, this might be my favorite two episodes of a finale. I think they're really beautifully shot and so many amazing Outlander moments in them. You know, from, wow, don't give it away too much, but, I mean, Jamie essentially gonna lose Claire, right? And for me as an actor, it was just, you know, so, so much to play, so much emotion. And Jamie's always so in control and knows what to do and he just, like, begs everyone. He begs the people around him, he begs God, he's just distraught and does some weird shit. You know, writing in blood and Claire's blood.

• 44:04Speaker 02

It's just like, what, Diana? But actually, like, it's so powerful. These are huge Outlander moments and I think that's what makes the show so surprising and still so engaging, because you just don't expect it.

• 44:21Josh Horowitz?

So, as everybody here knows, you have shot also the final mega season. We have a lot more to come, thankfully.

• 44:28Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 44:28Josh Horowitz?

The last time I saw you, you'd shot the bulk of it, but I think you were going back for just like some pickups.

• 44:33Speaker 02

Yeah, that's right. Yeah, we had. We'd finished, but we were going back for like, I think, two weeks.

• 44:37Josh Horowitz?

So was it a bit anticlimactic? Like, was like your final shot like an insert shot of your hand? Like, was it, or was it like a, an emotional moment, without revealing anything?

• 44:46Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 44:46Josh Horowitz?

What can you say about the last moments of shooting out?

• 44:48Speaker 02

Yeah, I mean, look, we were gonna, we're, we're not gone yet, and we'll be back a lot, I'm sure, talking about it, so, um, but, I mean, in some ways, it was kind of weird, because, I mean, I think Richard and Sophie were wrapped out, like, three times. They were like, "It's your final day on set, yeah!", and everyone gives a round of applause, and then they were back the next day. And, um, and we kind of were. We had like, "This is the final day", and everyone felt very emotional, and then we came here, we were doing press with you, and then, um, and then we did go back and do another bunch. But, yes, the final, I mean, look, the whole last year, actually, was very emotional. It was, it was a very difficult one. I don't know, well, I know why, because we knew it was coming, and it, some days, it just felt like another day on set.

• 45:31Speaker 02

It was like, "Oh, this is what we do, it's done for the last 11 years", and then other days, you're like, "Oh my god, this is the last time I will ever put on this garter", or boot, um, or whatever it is, you know? So it was like, "Oh, this is the last time I'll be with this person", and there, there were a lot of goodbyes, and the last day was, yeah, very emotional.

• 45:51Josh Horowitz?

  Did you make a speech?

• 45:52Speaker 02

Um, uh, no, no. No, some people did. Um, yeah, I mean, I, it was, I'm not sure if I, can I talk about the last scene? I know, I can't talk about it.

• 46:05Josh Horowitz?

  It's okay.

• 46:06Speaker 02

But anyway, there, there was just a moment with, the last scene was with me and Katrina, um, and it was a very emotional scene, and there were a lot of people that came to, to watch. I think all the crew came, and there was like 300 people watching, and, um, it was a very long scene, um, and at the end, I think we both just were kind of messy, crying, um, and Meryl was worse. And, yeah, it was, um, I don't know, it was, it's such a hard thing to kind of, um, put into words, but, yeah, the moment, I have to say, taking off Jamie's wig for the last time, that was kind of, kind of weird, yeah.

• 46:43Josh Horowitz?

I know you've talked about this a little bit, but Katrina did direct, we can say that. And that's exciting for her and exciting for everybody. I mean, that must have been a wonderful thing to see your friend and co-star just show off this new set of skills. And something she's probably wanted to do for a while. What was it like to see her kind of, I don't know, own the set in that way, in a different way?

• 47:03Speaker 02

Yeah, I think that's, those are the right words. She owned the set, and she really did. And she's been talking about it for a long time. I think she's very much wanted to be part of that and in that role. And I think, that's Katrina now telling you to hurry up.

• 47:18Josh Horowitz?

She's like, "Talk about me more, Josh."

• 47:19Speaker 02

Yeah, no, and yeah, and honestly, she worked so hard at it, and she just, she did, she ruled the set. She, it was so lovely, because she's obviously a great actress, and she knows the show inside out. So she just knew where to go, what to say, and where to point the cameras, if it were to be basic about it. But she did, she gave great notes, and she made it feel very comfortable, a very safe environment. And yeah, she's such a beautiful human being, so it was easy to perform for her. And I hope she's happy with those eps.

• 47:53Josh Horowitz?

Is there a, as you look back at the 10 years, is there a scene, an episode? If you could just relive, like, do it again, whether you want to do it better in your head, or just experience it again?

• 48:03Speaker 02

  Oh, wow.

• 48:04Josh Horowitz?

Is there one that jumps out?

• 48:07Josh Horowitz?

  A day on set, a moment, a...

• 48:10Speaker 02

There are so many, like, big moments that sort of stand out. And it's really hard to pick one. I mean, you know, going back to, for some reason, you know, season one, and by the river, and you're tearing my guts out, Claire, that was a big scene for us, because we knew it so well, because we both auditioned with it. To, I mean, even recently, being on the mountain with, actually, Stephen Crey saying goodbye to him, you know? Like, there's, there's just, there's all these moments that kind of will stand out, I think, through a test of time. So I don't, I don't think I'd like to redo them, but certainly, there were just so many iconic moments for us as actors. And I wonder if they're the same for, for the audience, but yeah, there are so many great moments.

• 48:55Josh Horowitz?

Have you shared much time with this new cast of this new spinoff show? Is that gonna, that's gonna be surreal to see this new Carry On the Legacy.

• 49:01Speaker 02

Oh, they're like everywhere, and they've taken over, I mean... Oh, Jesus. No, they're such a nice bunch. And I know there's some special things coming out for you guys to see. You know, cool, cool stuff where we get to speak with them and they get to speak with us. And they honestly are the nicest people. Myself and Jamie Roy have met up a few times. We've hung out. You know, they're all just such nice people. I mean, they're literally hanging out with our reps from Sessna Spirits and going out to the pubs. And they're in all the cafes in Glasgow. And yeah, like, they're such a great bunch. And honestly, it's really cool. I'm really excited because it's so cool to see younger versions of people.

• 49:44Speaker 02

You're like, oh, my God, that's Dougal. He's got hair. What the hell?

• 49:52Josh Horowitz?

Gail would like to know, after spending all these years working on Outlander, would you commit to another series that could possibly run multiple years? Like, where's your head at? That's a commitment. You've just been through a giant commitment over the last decade.

• 50:04Speaker 02

  Give me a job!

• 50:07Speaker 02

No, honestly, yeah, I'm, I'm, I'm waiting to see something that really captures me. And I'm, I'm feeling ready for it. I have some cool plans for things ahead and there's some fun stuff coming. But yeah, I'm also open. Anyone, anyone here? I'm open for, for work. But yeah, no, I'm, I'm waiting for the right thing to come along.

• 50:29Josh Horowitz?

Have you had, you must have had to turn things down just from the time commitment to Outlander over the years. Has that been, again, it's, I wouldn't say a double-edged sword. It's been such a gift, obviously, but it's, that's, it's no joke, the time commitment that Outlander has been in your life.

• 50:44Speaker 02

Yeah, no, it's amazing how myself and, and my co-stars, you know, have managed to do other stuff. Because honestly, you know, Outlander, it, it was all-consuming because not only, you know, you're, you're working six months or even a year on some seasons. And then you would have maybe six months off, but we have press. We have to deal with...

• 51:03Josh Horowitz?

Sixty more Josh interviews this year.

• 51:05Speaker 02

Which honestly, I would do every day. But, but yeah, so, you know, and then you're like, actually, I also need to take time off or I need to refresh because it is quite grueling. So, so yeah, it was kind of amazing that we have been able to fit things in. But now we're in a position where, hey, we could do anything.

• 51:23Josh Horowitz?

  Some future-

• 51:23Speaker 02

Breaks into song. We could be-

• 51:26Josh Horowitz?

Future jobs, this or that. Would you rather a Jurassic Park movie or a Mission Impossible movie?

• 51:34Speaker 02

  This, Jurassic Park.

• 51:36Josh Horowitz?

You want to run away from a dinosaur, you can do that?

• 51:39Speaker 02

Love it, yeah. I actually watched the first one again, yeah, recently, and it stands up, it's brilliant.

• 51:47Josh Horowitz?

  Barbie 2 or Gladiator 3?

• 51:55Speaker 02

Is there a world where they're both together?

• 51:58Josh Horowitz?

I could see you in both.

• 51:59Speaker 02

  Barbie Gladiator?

• 52:00Josh Horowitz?

This is a credit to your ability, I could see you as a Ken.

• 52:04Speaker 02

  A Ken in the arena.

• 52:08Josh Horowitz?

I know you're a Ridley Scott fan, so...

• 52:10Speaker 02

I'm a huge Ridley Scott fan. Did anyone see the Gladiator 2?

• 52:15Speaker 02

Yeah, I love that world, and I just, I guess I grew up with the first one, right? So, I'm so cool, but yeah, Barbie was so great.

• 52:23Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, which, what kind of Ken would you be? You'd be whiskey-drinking Ken, you'd be...

• 52:30Speaker 02

Probably, um, yeah, I don't know, resting Ken at the moment.

• 52:37Josh Horowitz?

  Resting, capping Ken?

• 52:40Josh Horowitz?

  Wicked 2 or Moana 3?

• 52:42Speaker 02

Do ya, Ken? Sorry, anyway, that was a bit late. So, I think I just took that from the audience, yeah. Sorry, what was the question?

• 52:49Josh Horowitz?

Wicked 2 or Moana 3? Now, Wicked 2, it's live-action, Moana, you can just be in a booth.

• 52:55Speaker 02

Oh, God, I'd love to do animated. Would love to, I've auditioned over the years, and I thought I was really good.

• 53:03Speaker 02

  Never heard anything.

• 53:05Josh Horowitz?

Do you say that at the end of the audition? By the way, guys, I think I nailed that, just so you know.

• 53:09Speaker 02

  I did a Lego game.

• 53:11Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 53:12Speaker 02

And the only thing I remember is how to be electrocuted.

• 53:15Josh Horowitz?

  Right. I'll show us.

• 53:17Speaker 02

  You want to hear it?

• 53:17Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah, please.

• 53:18Speaker 02

I have to do this with my mic.

• 53:26Speaker 02

Need some practice, but it's getting there.

• 53:27Josh Horowitz?

I would like to thank you for that. That gift that will now live forever.

• 53:35Josh Horowitz?

Slow it down, repeat it, do whatever you want with it. You're welcome.

• 53:40Speaker 02

That one's for free, guys. There's your special gift.

• 53:47Josh Horowitz?

Did you know while you were doing that what a bad idea it was, or just now?

• 53:50Speaker 02

No, it was... Just as I put the mic between my legs.

• 53:56Speaker 02

  Clenched, but uh...

• 54:00Josh Horowitz?

  And Marvel or DC?

• 54:02Speaker 02

I've been waiting years for you to ask me to do that.

• 54:05Josh Horowitz?

Marvel or DC? What do you want? Wow. They want you to do Marvel, but what do you want?

• 54:11Speaker 02

Um... Jury's out. They can both come.

• 54:15Josh Horowitz?

  Okay, okay.

• 54:16Speaker 02

  Calling.

• 54:17Josh Horowitz?

Let them fight for your services.

• 54:18Speaker 02

Let them fight, yeah, between skyscrapers.

• 54:21Josh Horowitz?

Yes. LB wants to know, you've mentioned in the past theater, something you might pursue when Outlander ends? Here we are, Outlander has ended. Theater?

• 54:30Speaker 02

And I'm in a theater right now.

• 54:32Josh Horowitz?

  This doesn't count.

• 54:33Speaker 02

There may be a theater show... In the works. Maybe.

• 54:41Josh Horowitz?

Yeah, thank you, I was gonna ask that. Where? Where? Here?

• 54:45Speaker 02

At the 92... No. No, I can't say, but there may be.

• 54:51Josh Horowitz?

  Okay, okay.

• 54:52Speaker 02

  Or may not to be.

• 54:55Josh Horowitz?

We're gonna get to some questions from the audience that they've sent in, but I think... Look, the booze empire continues. You got a book coming.

• 55:04Speaker 02

  Yes!

• 55:05Josh Horowitz?

Can we bring out some alcohol courtesy of Sassanac Spirits?

• 55:09Speaker 02

Oh, yeah! Oh, look at this, lovely, yay!

• 55:15Josh Horowitz?

Get that gorgeous bottle, thank you.

• 55:17Speaker 02

  Oh, here we go.

• 55:18Josh Horowitz?

Okay, so, for context, you have a book coming out later this year.

• 55:22Speaker 02

So the book is coming out, Sam, called My Cocktail Diaries. And it's recounting all of the amazing travels I've had and the amazing producers I've met. Great bartenders from around the world. We've got bartenders from the top 50 bars in the world, in New York and London. Yes, so they've supplied cocktails. And the book is out for preorder. So if you know cocktails, you don't, and you wanna... There's simple cocktails for people like you, George. Or elaborate ones. So we're gonna make a cocktail, George!

• 55:56Josh Horowitz?

I love a good cocktail. Okay, what are our ingredients?

• 55:57Speaker 02

We were gonna make one each.

• 56:00Josh Horowitz?

  Okay, okay.

• 56:00Speaker 02

Shall we make one each, or should we just get Josh to make one? What do you think? Let's just make Josh make one.

• 56:05Josh Horowitz?

  Why?

• 56:06Speaker 02

I have got faith in you.

• 56:08Josh Horowitz?

Well, if you give me the proper instruction. I'm only as good as my instructor.

• 56:11Speaker 02

  Josh, this is called...

• 56:12Josh Horowitz?

  We have not practiced this.

• 56:13Speaker 02

  The Morning Glory Fizz.

• 56:16Josh Horowitz?

Okay, every good cocktail needs a good name. That's a good name.

• 56:18Speaker 02

It does, it does, because it's actually from the 1800s. And it's a drink that you're supposed to drink in the morning. And it needs a good head.

• 56:29Speaker 02

  No, that's the truth.

• 56:31Josh Horowitz?

  The mics aren't working. I didn't...

• 56:33Speaker 02

It's true. You'll find out what I mean in a minute. So, Josh, I want you to pick up the cocktail shaker here. Yes, this one. You can separate it. Yeah, you can separate it, because it's in two parts here. Now, first of all, you can make this at home. Obviously, it's in the cocktail, the Diaries book. You need two ounces of your finest Sassenach Scottish whisky. So, this little one here, it's two ounces. This is called a tumbler? No, it's not. Jigger, sorry. This is a tumbler. You can put it in the small one. Yeah, go in, put in the small one, yeah. Oh, should I make one as well? I don't know. No, you can make it, okay. So, two ounces of that. Two ounces, Josh. Come on, don't be shy. That's not two... Okay, that's four.

• 57:16Speaker 02

But you can put that one in there. We'll both make one.

• 57:19Josh Horowitz?

This is for two people, for two people.

• 57:21Speaker 02

Oh, yeah, okay, we're making two. Oh, I see. Okay, that's fine. Yep, right, fine, yes. So, we're gonna double everything. So, I need a whole ounce of lime juice. So, that's like the little one, the little one? The little one, yep, there you go.

• 57:39Josh Horowitz?

  Talk amongst yourselves.

• 57:39Speaker 02

Talk amongst yourselves. Very simple. It's all in the cocktail book.

• 57:45Speaker 02

So, an ounce of that, Josh. People are waiting in the bar. These are short pauses, but never mind. An ounce of lemon juice.

• 57:54Speaker 02

Yes, they're doing very good. Freshly squeezed, your mother's lemons. If she has lemons, I don't know.

• 58:04Speaker 02

We're gonna do an ounce, it's very simple. An ounce of simple syrup. Simple because it's easy to make.

• 58:12Speaker 02

Basically, sugar and water equal parts. Put in the microwave blast, it's fine here. It becomes, there you go, right? This is absinthe.

• 58:22Speaker 02

Oh yeah. Called the green fairy. It was actually a Swiss drink. Oh, it's a dropper, so you've got to untwist it. Twist it, yeah, that's it. And give us, just be generous, give us six, six of those, go on. One, two, three, four, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And there you have it, my friend, now. Are you gonna, thank you. We're gonna put, we're gonna put some egg white in here.

• 58:52Josh Horowitz?

  Oh, I can't do that.

• 58:53Speaker 02

Yes, you can. So, we're gonna have to put two in there, Josh. So, I'll let you put it in here, you can do this. Do you want me to hold it? There we go. Okay, you're gonna crack it, and then crack it in there. No, in there, in that one. But then put the, but not the egg, not the yolk, not the yolk, just the egg white.

• 59:13Speaker 02

You've done this before, you can do it, yep, that's it, yes. And pour it in between the two, yes! Yes, round of applause, everybody! There you go, yeah, there you go.

• 59:26Speaker 02

  I need another one.

• 59:29Speaker 02

Okay. What are the odds that he gets some, oh god. Oh, oh god, it's gone in there!

• 59:46Speaker 02

We got it, we got it! We got it, we're good. No, we're good, we got this. That's fine, that's fine. There we go. Now, we're gonna put four ice cubes in here, maybe three. Alright, there you go.

• 1:00:00Josh Horowitz?

You have nowhere to be, right? You're good? Okay, good.

• 1:00:03Speaker 02

I want you to put that on top, give it a little slam, but be careful because it's very full.

• 1:00:09Speaker 02

Now, just shake that, Josh, now.

• 1:00:15Speaker 02

Hold both ends, you don't want it to...

• 1:00:18Speaker 02

Shake it, shake it Josh, shake it, shake it, shake it. Like in the film we saw. So I want you to, it's normally about 20 seconds, so maybe you could count them down. 20, 19, 18, 17. Come on Josh, shake it like you mean it.

• 1:00:45Speaker 02

2, 2 and a half, 2... How are you guys by the way? Are you going anywhere? Keep shaking Josh. Going anywhere nice tonight?

• 1:00:57Speaker 02

Okay, alright, I'll let you do it, okay. You did very well there. Okay, you need to... Yep, that's good, yeah, you're doing great, you're doing well. Yeah, beautiful! Round of applause, beautiful! I want you to strain this into your glass, I'm gonna hold this up for you. So you guys can see. Strain it and take your grubby hands off of it. Let the people see it. This is doing, you're doing very... Well, it's actually 2, yeah, we're gonna do... Yeah, go on, do... Yeah, do that, and then we'll do that one. You're very good at this Josh. We could take this on the road. Oh. Let's pour that one in there. There you go, that one's in there. No, we'll just do one beautiful, beautiful one.

• 1:01:40Speaker 02

And then, now, I want you to get some soda water. This is very simple, open that.

• 1:01:52Speaker 02

And then, we're gonna pour this down... Oh no, we're gonna pour that in there. Into the, into the used... How much? Um, as much as you like, yeah, go on, keep going, keep going, go. I'll do, I'll do... I'll give it a little stir. This is delicious, I promise. Have you ever made this before? I have, I have, just not with... An imbecile, okay. Now, you can pour that into here and watch him get the morning glory head! Come on Josh, pour it in there, look at it!

• 1:02:22Speaker 02

  Look at that!

• 1:02:25Speaker 02

I don't know if you can see this. Look at that!

• 1:02:30Speaker 02

That is beautiful! And then, you're supposed to drink it for your morning drink, so there you go. Cheers. Oh, well, I'll tell you what, I might give you a little spray as well. Here, there's some absinthe spray, because...

• 1:02:49Speaker 02

  Well done, Josh.

• 1:02:54Speaker 02

  Well done, mate.

• 1:02:58Speaker 02

He's done very well, it's delicious. Well done, mate. Wow, there you go.

• 1:03:04Josh Horowitz?

  I'm exhausted.

• 1:03:05Speaker 02

I'm exhausted. It wasn't that hard in rehearsal, but...

• 1:03:09Josh Horowitz?

It'll be easier for you with your book, don't worry. Um, Sam will come over to your place after you order the book, he'll teach you how to do it.

• 1:03:15Speaker 02

It's, uh, yeah, it's a good one, I mean, it's from the 1800s, and there are a lot of cocktails in there as well that are, um, classic cocktails which are from, you know, some of the oldest cocktail books ever published, so lots of fun and lots of things to make.

• 1:03:26Josh Horowitz?

Love it, I'm pre-ordering mine, because I know you won't send me one for free.

• 1:03:31Speaker 02

I'll send you some eggs as well.

• 1:03:32Josh Horowitz?

Perfect. Okay, you've answered the happy second few profoundly random questions, so I had to give you a few new ones. Uh, just for you, Sam, do you have a favorite video game of all time?

• 1:03:42Speaker 02

Um, so, as a teenager, and you've probably known, heard about this, but I started playing Red Alert in a, in a, uh, internet cafe. We used to have these things called internet cafes, you wouldn't know what they are. And I made friends with these people, I started playing in competitions, and I won. Um, and then I got a job in an internet cafe, so I was teaching people how to use internet. And I would sign...

• 1:04:08Josh Horowitz?

How to internet, that's the new book, How to Internet by Sam Ehren, that's the next one.

• 1:04:12Speaker 02

So my general spiel would be, oh, this is internet, it's like encyclopedia, you sign up to Hotmail. You can get an email address, if you Google, you can Google. And, and then, I'd go play Quake, and, um, I played Quake quite a lot, but these are kind of retro games, yeah, but I did play them quite a lot, yeah.

• 1:04:30Josh Horowitz?

What's the most common complaint on a set from you?

• 1:04:34Speaker 02

  Really, coffee.

• 1:04:35Josh Horowitz?

Coffee, more coffee, where's my coffee?

• 1:04:38Speaker 02

Yeah, I just, it's a necessity, I think, and if there's not good coffee, I do, I do kind of, I can't think.

• 1:04:46Josh Horowitz?

Right, that's Graham with getting hangry, you get coffee.

• 1:04:49Speaker 02

Graham with lattes, me with Americanos, yeah.

• 1:04:52Josh Horowitz?

Silliest you've ever felt in an audition?

• 1:04:55Speaker 02

  Oh my god, so many.

• 1:04:57Josh Horowitz?

Go to the dark place, what's the?

• 1:04:58Speaker 02

Um, a musical, Mama Mia audition, I think I've told you about it, I had a tash at the time because I was playing a Noel Coward play with Will Young and I had to sing the song and I can't remember the song at the moment, but I was told I could transpose it down an octave because I couldn't sing that high and I walked in and they said, "No, you have to sing it" and it literally was not a good sound.

• 1:05:28Josh Horowitz?

And finally, very apropos for our conversation earlier, what's your go-to dance move? Do you have a go-to?

• 1:05:35Speaker 02

It, yes. After a couple of these morning glories.

• 1:05:41Josh Horowitz?

Are you first on the dance floor?

• 1:05:43Speaker 02

  You'll see it alright.

• 1:05:43Josh Horowitz?

Or last on the dance floor, if you're at a wedding, if you're at a friend's party?

• 1:05:47Speaker 02

I'll tell you, if I'm at Kayleigh, which is the Scottish traditional dance, I am first up and last down because I am there all night because I love them and, but if it's modern, kind of a club or something, I'm a little awkward because I just don't know the songs.

• 1:06:09Josh Horowitz?

Uh, we covered a lot of territory, my friend, today.

• 1:06:11Speaker 02

  We did.

• 1:06:12Josh Horowitz?

We did. Couple Next Door, you guys are going to spread the good word, right? Amazing new show, on Starz. Obviously, I don't need to tell you guys, the end of season seven of Outlander coming, check it out, and of course, don't worry, we have lots to talk about because there's going to be a lot of episodes. Season eight coming at a TBD date unless you want to drop it right now. He's not.

• 1:06:31Speaker 02

Yeah, I would lose my life.

• 1:06:33Josh Horowitz?

No. Not to mention, a maker of delicious cocktails.

• 1:06:36Speaker 02

You made this and it's really delicious.

• 1:06:38Josh Horowitz?
