Cristin Milioti

Cristin Milioti (The Penguin, How I Met Your Mother, The Wolf of Wall Street) is a Grammy Award-winning actor. Cristin joins the Armchair Expert to discuss growing up in the place of origin of the Jersey Devil, the great equalizer being her acceptance into the safe space of drama kids, and being on the greatest show of all time The Sopranos. Cristin and Dax talk about how theater at its best feels like a communal place of worship, the magical experience of being nominated for a Tony for Once, and how profound but intimate it was to play opposite Leo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street. Cristin explains being a true disciple of Batman before getting her role as Sofia Falcone, reflecting on a few deeply humbling moments of her career, and the immense gratitude that her trajectory has been long and steady as she approaches 40. • 0:14Speaker 01

  She's been in everything.

• 0:15Dax Shepard?

She's been in everything. Incredible career. Palm Springs, How I Met Your Mother, Black Mirror, Made for Love, The Resort, and her incredibly standout work on The Penguin. Uh, which we are here to talk, uh, at length about. She's so good on that. And we're gonna announce our Armchair Anonymous prompts.

• 0:36Speaker 01

  Okay, great.

• 0:37Dax Shepard?

Okay, so get out your pen and paper. Get ready to submit. Tell us about a crazy jury duty experience.

• 0:45Speaker 01

  I'm so excited for this.

• 0:46Dax Shepard?

Yeah. My friend Tim Loves Dead texted me and said, hey, I, I want to tell a jury story.

• 0:51Speaker 01

  Oh, great.

• 0:52Dax Shepard?

Yeah, so we're gonna have a friend on for that one. Tell us a crazy story about finding a foreign object in a patient's butt. You can be a nurse, you can be a doctor, you can be a...

• 1:03Speaker 01

  Can you be a civilian?

• 1:04Dax Shepard?

  Sure. Yeah.

• 1:05Speaker 01

  All right.

• 1:06Dax Shepard?

Tell us about a crazy 4th of July disaster.

• 1:09Speaker 01

Hold on, the butt one, I bet we're gonna get some moms.

• 1:12Dax Shepard?

Oh, it's kids putting items in their butt, maybe?

• 1:16Speaker 01

Just keep it, like, make sure you ask your kids permission, actually.

• 1:23Dax Shepard?

Don't, but, but, just don't say their name.

• 1:25Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:26Dax Shepard?

Uh, tell us about a crazy 4th of July disaster. Tell us about a crazy sleepwalking experience. This is a part two. We had a really exciting episode, briefly. Tell us a crazy cop story. Woo, woo, woo. Wild card. This is, you know, everyone collects these.

• 1:44Speaker 01

Yeah, we love the wild card.

• 1:45Dax Shepard?

We love wild cards. So tell us a crazy wild card story. Ah, without further ado, please enjoy Kristen Milletti. We get support from Quince.

• 1:56Speaker 01

Okay, can we talk about the fact that the holidays are already here? It's crazy. I feel like I blinked and now we're in gifting season, which I'm not really mad about because I do love giving gifts. And Quince is making it so easy to find something great for everyone on my list, including myself, because let's be honest, self-gifting is a love language.

• 2:42Dax Shepard?

Well, I'm going to tell you this, it just got chilly for the first time this year in California, and I'm so excited, and I'm wearing my Quince cashmere right now.

• 2:49Speaker 01

  It's great.

• 2:50Dax Shepard?

Yeah, and I am going to gift this to some of my friends. I hope they're not listening.

• 2:54Speaker 01

Quince is also more than clothing. They've got fine jewelry for your significant other, leather bags for your bestie, hotel-quality bedding to set up your guest rooms, chef-grade cookware. That's an amazing thing they offer here, and it's such a good gift because people don't like buying cookware for themselves, but it's very important. And they also have five-star luggage, another good gift that people don't like buying for themselves.

• 3:17Dax Shepard?

Give the gift of quality this holiday season. Download the Quince app for app-exclusive offers, or go to quince.com. • 5:08Dax Shepard?

Want a coffee or any of that?

• 5:09Speaker 02

  No, I've like very caffeinated.

• 5:11Dax Shepard?

  You're caffeine to the hilt?

• 5:12Speaker 02

  I'm caffeine to the hilt.

• 5:14Dax Shepard?

What's your sweet spot of caffeine intake where it's productive, it's helpful, and then it's destructive? Do we know the cutoff?

• 5:20Speaker 02

I've yet to find it. I still, after all this time alive, haven't been able to find the line.

• 5:24Dax Shepard?

So you do go too far sometimes?

• 5:26Speaker 02

  All the time.

• 5:26Dax Shepard?

  Oh, wonderful.

• 5:27Speaker 02

Yeah, I did it this morning.

• 5:28Dax Shepard?

  You did?

• 5:28Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 5:29Dax Shepard?

  And what was that intake?

• 5:30Speaker 02

Well, I had a canned latte from the hotel minibar.

• 5:34Dax Shepard?

  Oh, great.

• 5:34Speaker 02

Because I don't live here. And then I walked to Arowan. I'm like a moth to a flame, unfortunately, with that, because we don't have anything like that in New York. And then I got a regular coffee.

• 5:43Dax Shepard?

I don't go there, but I did go in there one time because a friend of mine who's also sober was like, you gotta go get this smoothie there. It's cocaine and it's not a relapse. I can't remember, but it was like a 21-bath.

• 5:53Speaker 02

Bieber, probably Bieber. Yeah, they're all like that. You are aware that you're being actively bamboozled, but it's a little bit like I feel when I walk in there, I'm in agreement with it. You're bamboozling me. It's a casino for health food. You're gonna give me a great juice. I know you're hosing me.

• 6:07Dax Shepard?

  Yes, you're bending me over.

• 6:09Speaker 02

And I'm gonna just buy it because I do want the taste right now. It reminds me of- Like an F A O. Schwartz, because I know all the sections and I get excited.

• 6:17Dax Shepard?

Now, back to your coffee, though, the thing I'm gonna say about it is it's a little bit like taking pot brownies before everything was legalized and you knew what was in them, where it was Russian roulette. You don't really know. You're gonna get the brownie with like a hundred milligrams of THC or one. Because Erawan's like a single batch from this mountain.

• 6:37Speaker 01

  Ecuadorian often.

• 6:39Dax Shepard?

Six X the caffeine you're expecting.

• 6:41Speaker 02

  But that's the gamble.

• 6:43Speaker 01

  That's the fun of it.

• 6:44Speaker 02

  That's the ride.

• 6:44Speaker 01

I think one time we went on Postmates and went to Erawan and was creating the most expensive smoothie we could. We didn't order it, but we just wanted to see what could you get to? Cause there's all these add-ons you can do. And I think we got to like forty three dollars.

• 7:00Speaker 02

  Yeah, sounds about right.

• 7:02Dax Shepard?

So I'm gonna say of the many people I've researched, over eight hundred at this point, I've never gone to the early life and not one word about the parents.

• 7:11Speaker 02

  Oh, really?

• 7:11Dax Shepard?

  Are you parentless?

• 7:12Speaker 02

  No.

• 7:13Dax Shepard?

  Oh, thank goodness.

• 7:14Speaker 02

  Not at all.

• 7:14Dax Shepard?

  I'm so relieved.

• 7:15Speaker 02

  No, no.

• 7:16Dax Shepard?

  Cherry Hill, New Jersey?

• 7:17Speaker 02

  Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

• 7:18Dax Shepard?

Of course, when I think of New Jersey, I immediately go, oh, it's gonna be a suburb of New York, but no, a suburb of Philadelphia.

• 7:24Speaker 02

Suburb of Philadelphia. And I don't know how much time you've spent in New Jersey. We get kind of like a weird rap. I think most people, and this is very much in our blood, they associate us with The Sopranos or with the Jersey Shore. And that element is definitely there, but I couldn't wait to get out of New Jersey when I was growing up there. And now as an adult, I realize what a special place. There's like something in the water there. It's very spooky and mystical.

• 7:47Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 7:47Speaker 02

And there's a lot of big emotions there. And we have the Pine Barrens, but then we also have the ocean.

• 7:52Dax Shepard?

  What's the Pine Barrens?

• 7:54Speaker 02

The Pine Barrens is where the Jersey Devil allegedly lives. The Pine Barrens, it's in The Sopranos.

• 7:59Dax Shepard?

  They go kill people there.

• 8:01Speaker 02

They take the Russian there and then they get lost.

• 8:03Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 8:04Speaker 02

A lot of schools in New Jersey take you there to teach you about the land you're on. You go through these swamps and bogs and it's really legitimately like the forest and Beauty and the Beast, where he can choose one of the two roads and he's like, the spooky one.

• 8:16Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 8:17Speaker 02

  But it's really cool.

• 8:18Dax Shepard?

Okay, so what did mom and dad do?

• 8:20Speaker 02

My mom, she's a banker, and then my dad. Works in IT. He handles tech for small businesses.

• 8:26Dax Shepard?

  Okay, siblings?

• 8:27Speaker 02

  Younger brother.

• 8:28Dax Shepard?

  How much younger?

• 8:29Speaker 02

  Seven years.

• 8:29Speaker 01

I have an eight year gap.

• 8:31Dax Shepard?

Were you cruel to him like Monica was to Neil?

• 8:33Speaker 02

I think I was early on because seven years is you're two different generations.

• 8:37Dax Shepard?

  You were an only child.

• 8:39Speaker 02

Right, but he is one of my favorite people in the entire universe.

• 8:42Dax Shepard?

  Okay, he grew into someone.

• 8:44Speaker 02

  He's just fabulous.

• 8:45Dax Shepard?

Do you think he benefited from having an older sister? As I've seen many boys who had older sisters turned out better.

• 8:50Speaker 02

Maybe. He's like a golden human being, but I don't know how much I had to do with that.

• 8:54Dax Shepard?

  You should take him.

• 8:59Dax Shepard?

The big fun turn in your life happens at Long Lake.

• 9:03Speaker 02

  Wow, you guys dove deep.

• 9:06Dax Shepard?

And now this is an east coast thing. Monica and I are always perplexed by anytime we interview someone from the east coast, camp life.

• 9:12Speaker 02

  Are you west coast?

• 9:13Dax Shepard?

  No, Detroit, Atlanta.

• 9:15Speaker 01

  Yeah, the south.

• 9:16Speaker 02

So many of my cousins, I grew up going to like Kennesaw.

• 9:19Speaker 01

  Oh, sure.

• 9:21Speaker 02

  Christmas.

• 9:21Dax Shepard?

What's Kennesaw? What's the vibe there?

• 9:22Speaker 01

It's a little more rural there, I would say.

• 9:25Speaker 02

  Marietta too.

• 9:26Speaker 01

That's more suburban like where I grew up.

• 9:28Dax Shepard?

Did they introduce you to any weird country shit when you were there?

• 9:31Speaker 02

No, not that I can recall, but I just love the accents down there. They're like a warm bath.

• 9:37Dax Shepard?

Yeah, but were they setting fires and stuff more?

• 9:39Speaker 02

Uh, no, there was no fires.

• 9:41Dax Shepard?

  No ATVs?

• 9:41Speaker 02

No, no ATVs. You have an ATV out there.

• 9:44Dax Shepard?

Several, very well stocked with ATVs, all over the country.

• 9:47Speaker 02

  But not around LA.

• 9:48Dax Shepard?

Yeah, we have the best sand dunes in the world outside of Dubai and the Middle East, in glamorous California on the border of Mexico. Four hundred square miles of huge sand dunes.

• 9:57Speaker 01

But no, he doesn't drive it down Los Feliz Boulevard.

• 10:00Dax Shepard?

Just did the RS one last week. Yeah, because it just got back from getting the turbo tuned.

• 10:05Speaker 01

  Pulled over? Is it illegal?

• 10:06Dax Shepard?

Yes, highly illegal. But this city, I don't know if you've noticed, this is happening in New York where everyone rides dirt bikes on the street now with no helmet. They're doing wheelies. There's been some movement and everyone's just like, we're just not going to deal with it.

• 10:18Speaker 02

We have every now and then at an intersection, like eight tricked out. They're not motorcycles, but they're not dirt bikes.

• 10:23Dax Shepard?

  Four wheelers.

• 10:24Speaker 02

But then sometimes there's just one long wheel.

• 10:26Dax Shepard?

Yep, yep, yep. They'll take over an intersection and do donuts.

• 10:29Speaker 02

Rear up and then they'll disappear.

• 10:30Speaker 01

When you see that, what is your thought?

• 10:33Dax Shepard?

And you're not allowed to use the word horny. That's the only word you're not allowed to use.

• 10:36Speaker 02

Don't worry, that word doesn't come to mind when I see that.

• 10:39Speaker 01

Okay, so do you think it's cool?

• 10:41Speaker 02

When I see that, I have a little bit of like, oh.

• 10:43Speaker 01

  Okay, you have some pity.

• 10:44Dax Shepard?

Like you feel bad for the boys trying to be manly?

• 10:47Speaker 02

But I also get it. Whenever I've done like a go-kart somewhere, I feel like the king of the world.

• 10:53Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 10:54Speaker 02

And so I also can imagine what it must be like. I'm a real fan of pedicabs in New York.

• 10:59Dax Shepard?

  Pedicabs, how do they do?

• 11:00Speaker 02

They're only in Times Square. It's the bicycle with the, they're like $10 a minute. It's a really poor investment, but they let you choose the music and they blast the music and they ride through all the taxis and it's like thrilling.

• 11:12Dax Shepard?

  Yes, yes.

• 11:13Speaker 02

Obviously, that's a gentler version of riding an ATV through Times Square.

• 11:18Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 11:19Speaker 02

But I do get it. It's the loudness that I don't like. It's only the volume.

• 11:23Dax Shepard?

Things are moving into the electric space. I just am getting my very first electric dirt bike. It's in route right now, but you've kind of nailed it, the appeal. Two things. So both my daughters ride motorcycles. The youngest one just recently actually got into it in the way that you need to get into it. We were riding in the neighborhood and she was like riding next to me and she goes, "Oh my God, Dad, I get it. What's so cool is you're in total control." And I'm like, "Yes, that is the whole thing. I tell it to do this and it does that." Then there's also, it's a break from the given reality. Like you're on a street, you're supposed to make a left turn. It's in a grid and then you have this thing with suspension. You can drive on the sidewalk. You can split between the traffic. So it does feel like a superpower as well. That's a part of the appeal.

• 12:03Speaker 02

I've never explored this topic as in depth. It is just the noise that bothers me.

• 12:06Speaker 01

  It is intrusive.

• 12:07Speaker 02

It's obnoxious and yet I live in New York. I'm surrounded by loud noise, but there's something about that like, because everything else, I'm like, oh, I would love this.

• 12:17Dax Shepard?

And it feels probably a little toxic. It's a little aggressive.

• 12:20Speaker 02

  Or something.

• 12:20Dax Shepard?

It's the scary side of maleness, maybe.

• 12:22Speaker 02

That part of it seems so unnecessary and it scares dogs and it scares kids. It sets off car alarms.

• 12:28Dax Shepard?

  I know.

• 12:29Speaker 01

It feels like, it feels selfish. It's like you like this thing so much that you don't care that this is bothering the entire city with your noise.

• 12:36Speaker 02

But I rode a moped in Paris once. It was like living inside of a song. This is so transportative and it's such a precious memory. So I get it, but mopeds aren't loud.

• 12:46Dax Shepard?

The experience of traveling briskly is just taken for granted. And in a car, you're kind of removed from the sensation, but when you're on two wheels with nothing around you, it's as close as you get to riding. Horse somewhere.

• 12:59Speaker 02

  Yeah, I bet.

• 13:00Dax Shepard?

You're very aware of this neat gift we've gotten where we can go places quicker than we would otherwise be able to.

• 13:06Speaker 02

Yeah, I've never ridden on a motorcycle.

• 13:08Dax Shepard?

Well, after this interview, we're gonna.

• 13:09Speaker 02

  Okay, we're gonna.

• 13:10Dax Shepard?

  Hop on.

• 13:10Speaker 02

We'll take off. Yeah, but it would scare me here just because of how everyone's texting and driving.

• 13:15Dax Shepard?

For sure. Watching movies, smoking weed. I see guys watching pornography on the way home and I just think, my God, it's that bad.

• 13:22Speaker 02

  We've really rotted.

• 13:24Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, I see stuff.

• 13:25Speaker 02

  Taken a turn.

• 13:26Dax Shepard?

I have a really good glimpse of this city because of line splitting and just seeing what everyone's doing in their cars all the time. And very few people are driving.

• 13:33Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 13:34Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 13:35Speaker 02

  Oh, God.

• 13:36Dax Shepard?

That porn one really got you.

• 13:37Speaker 02

Yeah, it did. Well, because it hurt my soul a little bit.

• 13:39Dax Shepard?

We're chimpanzees that are in mechanized machines.

• 13:42Speaker 02

I know. So that's why I'd be afraid to ride a motorcycle here, I guess.

• 13:46Dax Shepard?

Okay, back to Long Lake Camp. So that's kind of a thing we didn't experience. I'm very envious of it.

• 13:51Speaker 02

  I know.

• 13:51Dax Shepard?

  Right?

• 13:52Speaker 02

  It was cool.

• 13:53Dax Shepard?

How did you end up there?

• 13:54Speaker 02

Something my parents suggested and I didn't have a lot of friends. I don't know this for a fact, but I think they were like, we're gonna just make you be social. And I was bullied a lot during that time of my life, but at camp, I was there with a lot of other kids that I think were also experiencing that. And I was king of camp. It was run by hippies and I was only there for, I think, two weeks. It became this beacon where I, for those two weeks, was fully accepted and so confident and my full strange self. Was it an arts camp? It was. They did sports as well, but it was mostly artsy kids. Okay, got it. It was just really special.

• 14:33Dax Shepard?

Well, first of all, I want to know what your explanation is for why that was all happening in a public school. But then also, yes, just to visit someplace and go, oh, okay, so there will be places I will fit in. It's got to be the most optimistic thing that could happen.

• 14:48Speaker 02

It's such a helpful thing. It buys you hope. It gave me these little bursts of confidence too, where I was deserving of not being shoved into a wall. Or something.

• 14:58Dax Shepard?

Okay, so why wasn't it working?

• 15:00Speaker 02

It actually kind of all happened at the same time. I definitely had friends. I was a soccer player and I was just like a regular kid in a New Jersey suburban elementary school. But I had different pop culture references. I just didn't totally fit in. And then I went to this camp for the first year, had this incredible awakening where I felt like I was king of camp and the hottest girl at camp that summer. Was from Venezuela. She was 16 and she shaved her head at camp. And it was like the coolest thing that had ever happened. And the entire camp was like, oh, and she had a nose ring, no makeup. It was like Sinead O'Connor.

• 15:36Dax Shepard?

  Yes, yes, yes, yes.

• 15:37Speaker 02

So then I got home from those couple of weeks and I shaved my head.

• 15:41Dax Shepard?

  Rob.

• 15:42Speaker 02

  What?

• 15:45Speaker 02

Okay, you have it. So you do.

• 15:47Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 15:47Dax Shepard?

This is among the cutest photos I've ever seen of a human on planet Earth.

• 15:52Speaker 02

It's really cute. That's a week into a new middle school.

• 15:54Dax Shepard?

  Sixth grade.

• 15:55Speaker 02

Seventh. I don't know a lot of the kids.

• 15:58Speaker 01

  I'm stressed.

• 15:59Speaker 02

Do you know what I mean?

• 15:59Speaker 01

Yes. I think this is really, really sweet and so cute. And I have almost ties.

• 16:04Speaker 02

You know exactly what happened when that kid walks in the door of a middle school with 2,000 other kids.

• 16:11Dax Shepard?

Right. The high school you ultimately graduated from was Cherry Hill East, which implies.

• 16:16Speaker 02

  There's a west.

• 16:17Dax Shepard?

Right? So this is like a huge district.

• 16:20Speaker 02

  Giant sprawling suburb.

• 16:21Dax Shepard?

Okay. So for the listener who can't see, it's a buzz cut.

• 16:25Speaker 01

  Cause shave is not.

• 16:26Speaker 02

Yeah, it was a buzz cut because my mom took me, and to my mom's credit and my dad's credit, I didn't do this myself. I came home and was like, hey, I want this. And they were like, okay.

• 16:36Dax Shepard?

It felt really mean, but I did want to say you can't tell when you say I didn't do this myself.

• 16:41Speaker 02

I know you can't tell. Picture day is halfway through the year, maybe a couple of months.

• 16:45Speaker 01

It's grown out a little bit.

• 16:46Speaker 02

  A little bit.

• 16:47Dax Shepard?

  I love you.

• 16:48Speaker 01

You know what makes me so sad about it?

• 16:50Dax Shepard?

  Tell me.

• 16:51Speaker 01

And I want our listeners to really think about this.

• 16:54Dax Shepard?

All of our middle school listeners.

• 16:56Speaker 01

No, no, our adult listeners. When I see that, I know me as a middle schooler. Everyone's just trying to survive middle school and make it through without getting shoved in a locker.

• 17:06Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 17:06Speaker 01

That I know, and this is so regrettable and sad, that if this sweet, sweet child walked in, I would turn. I can't be friends.

• 17:16Speaker 02

  Oh, absolutely.

• 17:17Speaker 01

  I'm saying that with heartbreak.

• 17:18Speaker 02

  No, and I know that.

• 17:19Dax Shepard?

They're doing something you're afraid to do in a way that's scary.

• 17:23Speaker 02

I mean, you can see my eyes. I was like a tender.

• 17:26Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, you're a little bambi.

• 17:28Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 17:29Dax Shepard?

Now here's what's deeply unfair about the world. So I too, in seventh grade, I had a mohawk. But because I'm a boy, and it was so not what you were supposed to do.

• 17:37Speaker 02

  Yeah, sure.

• 17:37Dax Shepard?

Girls were like, oh, this guy is so confident in a man or a boy. That kind of quote bravery. Was rewarded.

• 17:46Speaker 02

  I was like, he's bad. That's cool.

• 17:49Dax Shepard?

And that's unfair, but I'm promising you right now, I would have 100% been friends with you.

• 17:53Speaker 02

  Really?

• 17:53Dax Shepard?

Oh, absolutely. I would have been drawn to this like a moth to a flame. I would have seen what you were up to and I was doing a similar thing and I would have been like, all right, I'm gonna pass you notes in class and we're gonna get through this.

• 18:06Speaker 02

Well, it was such a 180 of feeling so good for those few weeks over the summer and then coming in and I was like silent for months. I was like afraid to talk.

• 18:15Dax Shepard?

You were reminded of the other world.

• 18:17Speaker 02

Tenfold because at least before I had long hair, I could kind of Blend. Blend. And I of course was aware of the social situation too of that age. It does feel like Lord of the Flies. If you think I'm stupid, look over there. I get it. Sad that that's how humans are.

• 18:33Dax Shepard?

  Yeah. Well, I love her.

• 18:34Speaker 02

  I do too.

• 18:35Dax Shepard?

This picture made me so happy when I saw it and you should have been absolutely rewarded. You should have skyrocketed to number one status.

• 18:41Speaker 02

I really did not. What's the opposite of skyrocketing? Plummeting to the Mariana Trench. Was it girls who were mainly? Both. It was both. That was the other thing. The boys thought I was a young boy. So they would truly like throw me into a wall and then be like, oh. Oh, you have girl parts. It was both sides. I truly was a unifier in terms of people picking on me.

• 19:04Dax Shepard?

Unfortunately, the smallest boy in a class experiences, which just any kid trying to earn his stripes is gonna shove him randomly.

• 19:10Speaker 02

  Exactly.

• 19:10Dax Shepard?

  Oh, boy.

• 19:11Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 19:12Dax Shepard?

Did it level off? Did you find a sweet spot in your schooling?

• 19:14Speaker 02

The way that it leveled off was that the only kids that were nice to me were the drama kids. There were a couple of girls in the middle school theater department, which, oh my God, what I wouldn't give for the footage of the plays that we did.

• 19:30Speaker 02

But they were like, you can hang with us. And I started going to these rehearsals and drama classes and I was like, oh, I love this. I can have fun and disappear probably. Also, these kids are nice to me. And it was like a version of camp.

• 19:43Dax Shepard?

You're right. There was a little tiny safe space.

• 19:46Speaker 02

In the cafeteria where we would rehearse after school, I felt this grand relief and that I could giggle again. It just was a respite. And so it was a really actually fortuitous way to find myself in acting. A famously stable industry. Full of mentally well people.

• 20:05Dax Shepard?

We're successful. Heal all those wounds magically. And then you went to NYU?

• 20:09Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 20:10Dax Shepard?

  Right out of high school?

• 20:10Speaker 02

  Right out of high school.

• 20:11Dax Shepard?

Okay, now, you shared this in common with Kristen. I think she left, maybe you left a little earlier than her.

• 20:16Speaker 02

I left halfway through my sophomore year.

• 20:18Speaker 01

  To go do theater?

• 20:19Speaker 02

No, just to take a leap.

• 20:21Dax Shepard?

Get the fuck out of there.

• 20:21Speaker 02

I was like, get me out of here.

• 20:23Dax Shepard?

Yeah, what didn't you enjoy about it? I wrote down a quote you said about it. Uh, wildly unhappy.

• 20:29Speaker 02

I was like, oh, God, what did I say? Sometimes interviews make me really nervous.

• 20:32Dax Shepard?

  Oh, they do.

• 20:33Speaker 02

Things are read back to me. And I'm like, I don't feel that way anymore. And it's very strange to adhere to, and also, who cares? No one's thinking about it that much, but it's sometimes an odd sensation to be like, oh, oh, God, I did? Huh, when did I say that?

• 20:46Dax Shepard?

I agree with you. I think it would be easy for people that read interviews to think the answer that was given was one that was well thought out. As opposed to, I'm obliged to answer this in some way immediately.

• 20:58Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 20:59Dax Shepard?

And so I'm gonna do my best at it. And it's not necessarily your walking opinion of anything.

• 21:05Speaker 02

It's me trying to figure something out in the moment.

• 21:07Speaker 01

Also, you can evolve. The way you think about things changes.

• 21:10Speaker 02

Totally. But wildly unhappy, I wasn't wrong. In this one, I'd say it's actually like pretty accurate. I knew that I was accruing debt and I was in a musical theater program. I was at Tisch, I was in CAP 21.

• 21:24Dax Shepard?

  That's Kristen as well.

• 21:25Speaker 02

  Really? I didn't know that.

• 21:26Dax Shepard?

  Yes, yes.

• 21:27Speaker 02

I don't know what her experience was, but I was doing some stuff every day that I thought was cool, like tap dancing class. But then I would be in the middle of tap dancing and I'd be like, I'm going into debt.

• 21:35Dax Shepard?

  To learn to tap dance.

• 21:36Speaker 02

I'm never gonna tap dance, I'm not good at this.

• 21:38Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 21:38Speaker 02

I love this as like an experience, but I'm not gonna be in Anything Goes. And then we would do scenes from Chekhov. This sounds so theater studenty, but I was like, oh, I love this. And then they'd be like, well, that was the 20 minutes we gave to Chekhov. So now we go to ballet. And I get what they were doing, but I felt like a square peg in a round hole a little bit.

• 21:57Dax Shepard?

  Were you lonely?

• 21:57Speaker 02

Going to New York, even though that's where I've like wanted to live always, and I will never not live there, was overwhelming for an 18-year-old. I also wasn't a great student and I didn't understand that NYU is like a liberal arts program. So you have to take regular classes. I thought it was a conservatory. Imagine my surprise, also, why didn't I research that? But I just wanted to be an actor in New York. And I showed up and they were like, okay, you have tap dancing class on Thursday and then on Friday, you have to study French history. And I was like, oh, sorry, I didn't wanna do that. And they were like, well, that's the program. And I was like, huh, interesting. I didn't realize that.

• 22:29Dax Shepard?

Yeah, you're gonna take some biology.

• 22:31Speaker 02

So I think that was part of it too. And I was like, this is not what I thought it was. And so then I left.

• 22:36Dax Shepard?

Were mom and dad at all disappointed or scared?

• 22:38Speaker 02

They were really supportive. They were definitely like, listen, you've made this decision. We support it, but you have to now go support yourself.

• 22:47Dax Shepard?

  Last question on that.

• 22:48Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 22:48Dax Shepard?

Is it also possible that you had had an expectation or a fantasy that it was gonna be like camp? You were gonna land in your group and be seen and then you got there and it was like, no, I'm lonely here.

• 22:59Speaker 02

Music has always been a huge part of my life and I love musical theater so much, but I didn't quite fit into that world. I've done a couple of musicals, but they've all been not typical. Yeah, they're not like thoroughly modern milli. And I say that as a huge fan of thoroughly modern milli. They're different. I sound different. So I think I also just felt like I was in the wrong place.

• 23:18Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I don't know how to say what you're saying without it being a pejorative. But yes, there is a kind of type of musical theater performer. It's a very specific kind of thing that works really well.

• 23:28Speaker 02

  Which I also love.

• 23:29Dax Shepard?

Like Fiona Apple's not gonna be.

• 23:32Speaker 02

  And that's my girl.

• 23:33Dax Shepard?

That's right. And they're not, by the way, gonna end up on Sopranos.

• 23:36Speaker 02

  Sure, sure.

• 23:37Dax Shepard?

Okay, so yes, in oh six, shortly after you've left NYU. Now, I can't imagine anything more exciting for a girl from New Jersey to be on Sopranos. Clearly, everyone in your family's watching it.

• 23:49Speaker 02

No, we couldn't afford HBO, so I had never seen it. I just watched The Sopranos for the first time two years ago. It was wasted on me, but thank God.

• 23:57Dax Shepard?

Best show ever with the best performance by an actor of all time.

• 24:01Speaker 02

I had resisted it because I was like, certainly it can't live up to the expectations of being the greatest show of all time. It is the greatest show of all time. And thank God, I didn't know. Because for me, I just was like, whoa. I knew who they were, but the most exciting part of that experience for me was that Steve Buscemi directed it. I grew up watching the Coen Brothers films with my dad. We would watch a lot of movies together, him and I, and certainly movies that I probably shouldn't have been seeing.

• 24:26Dax Shepard?

Yeah, sure, sure. That's how it should be.

• 24:27Speaker 02

Yeah. And so I was like a huge Steve Buscemi fan. And that was actually the part that I would start shaking.

• 24:33Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Did you see him in the studio? Are you watching the studio?

• 24:37Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 24:37Dax Shepard?

  Buscemi.

• 24:38Speaker 02

Yeah, he's so wonderful. But he's wonderful in everything. And he was so kind to me. How old were you? Nineteen. It was your first job? Yeah.

• 24:47Dax Shepard?

First time on TV in Sopranos.

• 24:49Speaker 02

Yeah. And like really not knowing.

• 24:51Dax Shepard?

  Missing it.

• 24:53Speaker 02

  Missing it.

• 24:54Speaker 01

  No, not missing it.

• 24:55Speaker 02

I knew it was a big deal intellectually where I was like, I see the posters on this show on buses. I know, of course, who all these people are.

• 25:02Speaker 01

If you cared, you wouldn't have booked it. At that age, when you walk in, you're brand new and you're obsessed with the thing, it wouldn't have happened.

• 25:09Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 25:10Dax Shepard?

I watched a clip of it today.

• 25:11Speaker 02

You did? I'm not good on it.

• 25:13Dax Shepard?

Yeah, you are. You're really good.

• 25:15Speaker 02

When I watched it, not that I had forgotten that I was on it.

• 25:17Dax Shepard?

Oh, right, right, right. And then when you were watching it as an adult.

• 25:19Speaker 02

Like that episode started and I was like, wait, why have I seen that before? And then I was like, oh, my God, I'm about to appear on the screen. And it took me a second and then I appear and I'm so young and I'm such a little baby. And I'm like holding that cigarette and I'm yelling my lines like I'm in a theater.

• 25:36Dax Shepard?

  But it works.

• 25:37Speaker 01

  What do you play?

• 25:38Speaker 02

  I'm like a mob boss's daughter.

• 25:40Dax Shepard?

  Ironically, no.

• 25:40Speaker 02

Ironically, yes. But I pop in, I show up in a later episode, too.

• 25:44Dax Shepard?

  You did three, right?

• 25:45Speaker 02

  With a shaved head.

• 25:47Dax Shepard?

  I don't know that.

• 25:48Speaker 01

Your life is really full circle.

• 25:50Speaker 02

OK, so I did Sopranos. I didn't work for a long time and I did a bunch of odd jobs. And then I booked this Martin McDonagh play called The Lieutenant of Inishmore. And I was an understudy in it. It's how I got my equity card. In the play, the character has a buzzed head. They buzzed my hair and I only went on one time in like an eight month run.

• 26:06Dax Shepard?

I was just gonna say, as the understudy, couldn't you be like, well, let's wait. It doesn't take long to buzz my hair.

• 26:12Speaker 02

It's also the power of a good agent. My agent at the time was like, oh, yeah, just buzzer.

• 26:16Speaker 01

  She'll do whatever.

• 26:17Speaker 02

And I would have and did, but as I was in the middle of that, we filmed a third episode and I showed up. And they were like, your hair is gone.

• 26:24Dax Shepard?

  Surprise.

• 26:25Speaker 02

When I got to that episode, when I was watching it, I was like, no one knew that you were his daughter. It's so random. I'm in a room with a buzzed head.

• 26:31Dax Shepard?

Well, they didn't put a wig on you.

• 26:32Speaker 02

They didn't put a wig on me and I'm sitting, I don't want to give anything away, on the edge of his bed.

• 26:35Speaker 01

  Ooh.

• 26:36Speaker 02

  And I was like, wow.

• 26:37Dax Shepard?

What a delight, though, for you to later watch this thing and go, that's cool. I was in The Greatest Show Ever Made.

• 26:42Speaker 02

I was in The Greatest Show Ever Made.

• 26:43Dax Shepard?

You're in like the godfather of TV.

• 26:44Speaker 01

Kind of sim. But I did a play, also a Martin McDonagh play, The Pillow Man.

• 26:50Speaker 02

Oh, one of my favorite plays.

• 26:51Speaker 01

I loved it so much. Me and these two other girls kind of played these ghost type characters.

• 26:56Speaker 02

The ones that are in the terrifying part.

• 26:58Speaker 01

Yes. She had this whole vision of us and she was like, whoever books these parts is gonna have to shave their head. And I was like, sure, I'll say that, but I'm not really gonna do it. And then I booked it and me and this other girl were like, we're not shaving our head. We had this huge conversation with the director and she was so pissed, obviously. But I was like, I'm in college. This is for one play here?

• 27:23Speaker 02

  Those parts don't require it.

• 27:25Speaker 01

  It was her vision.

• 27:26Speaker 02

And the Lieutenant of Inishmore, it's because she's militant.

• 27:28Speaker 01

  Yeah, she's supposed to.

• 27:30Speaker 02

She has like a gun and she's got the aviators and the shaved head. That's just artistic liberty.

• 27:34Speaker 01

It was, but I also was like, am I gonna be able to do this as an actor? I'm not even willing to do this.

• 27:40Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 27:41Speaker 01

We ended up doing bald caps and hats.

• 27:43Dax Shepard?

Oh, boy, I bet they look great.

• 27:46Speaker 02

  You don't love getting scared?

• 27:47Dax Shepard?

  Theater.

• 27:48Speaker 02

  Theater?

• 27:49Dax Shepard?

  I don't.

• 27:49Speaker 02

  But you've seen great theater.

• 27:50Speaker 01

You haven't seen many straight plays. You get dragged in.

• 27:53Dax Shepard?

Those ones are the least favorite.

• 27:55Speaker 02

When theater is great, for me, there's nothing like it. But when it's bad, there's nothing like it.

• 28:01Dax Shepard?

Yes, yes. I feel like it's fish, like people who love fish.

• 28:04Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 28:05Dax Shepard?

And they're like, no, no, you gotta get the right, the possibility of failure is so high with fish and with theater. And then you're really there. Anyways, I respect it. My issue is, are we pretending we're seeing this? Are we acknowledging there's people in front of us doing it?

• 28:18Speaker 02

  Interesting.

• 28:18Dax Shepard?

I can't get into the paradigm of it.

• 28:21Speaker 02

I've never thought about it that way.

• 28:23Dax Shepard?

I went to Lion King with an ex-girlfriend's family in Seattle and everyone was so delighted. And I was like, I'm confused. Is everyone buying into the animals are talking and they're not in front of us? Or are they going, what a cool production? It's so beautiful and look what the humans can do live. That would be one way to view it. And I'm caught between, I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do.

• 28:44Speaker 02

I really find that so fascinating. I would think that if you were watching the animated version too, where you're like, am I supposed to believe Zazu's real?

• 28:53Speaker 01

Yeah, why is a movie better?

• 28:55Dax Shepard?

Because the movie is very removed and it has this filter over it, which is the screen. And so, yes, I can buy into like, I'm watching Godfather and I can believe this world exists. I can't touch it.

• 29:08Speaker 02

Do you know what I wonder, or I don't know, I'm just trying this on.

• 29:11Dax Shepard?

You'll get quoted later that this was your permanent opinion on this.

• 29:14Speaker 02

This is not necessarily how I'll feel in a week. I kind of like in theater, and I can't reiterate enough, when it's bad, there's nothing like it in terms of a torturous experience. And I'm someone who's also been in some awful plays. And when you are in an awful play and you can like hear the seats going up as people leave, you can just feel it. And it's just excruciating.

• 29:32Dax Shepard?

It's why you do it, though, because those are the stakes. You know, if it didn't have that, then when it works, it wouldn't have the elation.

• 29:40Speaker 02

When theater is great, it reminds me of, I'm a very avid concert goer. I see everything.

• 29:44Dax Shepard?

And you cry through most performances?

• 29:46Speaker 02

  I do cry.

• 29:47Dax Shepard?

When you saw Joni Mitchell, you cried for three hours.

• 29:49Speaker 02

I cried for three hours. Wow, where did I share that? Yeah, it's really emotional and I think it reminds me of a place of worship. Where I can be in communion with an experience that is so individual to that one moment in time, with the people who I'm seated next to and the people who are also communing things. I wasn't raised with any organized religion and I have wondered if that's what that at its best is supposed to offer. That there are things moving through us that are bigger than us that unite us. And I think when theater is good, my own heart and memory and life is in communion with a strangers and with strangers in a dark room, like we've gone to pray or something. I'm being so lofty as hell.

• 30:32Dax Shepard?

  It's cool to believe that.

• 30:34Speaker 02

And I think that's maybe sometimes easier to do with a concert, especially because that music is something you listen to in private moments. That's what makes those things so gorgeous and emotional, but you're feeling it.

• 30:44Dax Shepard?

You know, when I saw that got me, the Fleetwood Mac one, Stereophonic.

• 30:47Speaker 02

  Beautiful.

• 30:48Dax Shepard?

  That was fucking radical.

• 30:49Speaker 02

You begin to feel like a fly on the wall. You know what? I get what you mean. Maybe I have just a, because I've been inside of them too, and I just really like theater as an art form. I am really being lofty.

• 31:00Speaker 01

  No, you're not.

• 31:01Dax Shepard?

Stop self policing yourself. Be who you are. You're loved and you're valued and you're at camp.

• 31:06Speaker 02

I do think the fly on the wallness is also what I like about theater. You can feel like you're in the experience with them.

• 31:13Speaker 01

Again, if it's really good, it's the difference when we do this show in person, the people in it. If somebody was a live show versus if they are watching it on YouTube or when we did Zoom interviews, that was still great, but the electricity that's happening between people, you can't feel.

• 31:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 31:31Dax Shepard?

Okay, now I talked way too long to you about theater. But oh, six year and sopranos and then. Without discrediting anything, it seems like the next moment for you is once.

• 31:43Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 31:43Dax Shepard?

You were in it for two years?

• 31:45Speaker 02

I was in it for a year and a half.

• 31:46Dax Shepard?

Is that kind of a record?

• 31:48Speaker 02

Sometimes people are in things for like five years.

• 31:50Dax Shepard?

  Oh, really?

• 31:50Speaker 02

  10 years.

• 31:51Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 31:51Speaker 02

It was like a year and a half when all was suddenly done between doing it out of town, doing it downtown, and then doing it on Broadway. I performed it over 500 times.

• 31:58Dax Shepard?

Wow. And you got nominated for a Tony?

• 32:00Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 32:01Dax Shepard?

Okay, that's so thrilling. And you won a Grammy for it?

• 32:03Speaker 02

  I did.

• 32:04Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 32:04Dax Shepard?

  Well, this is so exciting.

• 32:05Speaker 01

You might get an EGOT. This is so exciting.

• 32:08Dax Shepard?

You're halfway there. And then you are on Glenn Hansard's album.

• 32:13Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 32:13Dax Shepard?

Okay, so he was on an episode of Parenthood. He came and recorded at The Luncheonette, which was a studio we had on This Fake World. What a sweet dude to spend a week with. Did you love him?

• 32:22Speaker 02

He was lovely, and that music, I'd never seen the movie.

• 32:26Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 32:26Speaker 02

  Before I did the musical.

• 32:28Dax Shepard?

  Intentionally?

• 32:29Speaker 02

At that point, I hadn't seen it, and then it became intentional. You know what? I'm gonna just do my own thing. And the play was different in a lot of ways, but getting to sing that music night after night, it was a really magical experience.

• 32:39Dax Shepard?

Yeah, well, I wish I would have seen that. Okay, now we go to TV, 2013.

• 32:43Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 32:44Dax Shepard?

You play Mother on How I Met Your Mother.

• 32:46Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 32:46Speaker 01

  Big reveal.

• 32:47Speaker 02

  Another show I'd never seen.

• 32:49Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 32:49Dax Shepard?

I'm in that camp with you. I hadn't seen it.

• 32:51Speaker 01

  I loved it.

• 32:52Speaker 02

  I had never seen it. I am glad that I hadn't. I don't think I understood.

• 32:56Speaker 01

  The weight of the mother.

• 32:57Speaker 02

  I didn't understand the weight.

• 32:58Dax Shepard?

And I don't, so tell me. The show's called that, and I guess I'm learning today if you appeared on season eight and then nine.

• 33:05Speaker 02

I'm in it for like six episodes.

• 33:07Speaker 01

Yeah, the premise of the show is he's telling his kids about how he met their mother. And he goes back in time at the beginning of his story to tell it. So you don't know throughout the whole series who the mother is. And new people are coming in and out, new girlfriends, and it's like, oh, it's probably Robin, the best friend. And then turns out it's not.

• 33:29Dax Shepard?

  It's Kristen.

• 33:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 33:30Dax Shepard?

  Yeah. And you didn't know?

• 33:34Speaker 01

She comes in at the end.

• 33:35Dax Shepard?

  With a shaved head.

• 33:36Speaker 02

I burst through the wall like the Kool-Aid man. And I go, oh, yeah. And then the show ends.

• 33:42Speaker 01

I'm glad you didn't know. Cause that is stressful because I bet, I mean, and you'll tell us, people had strong reactions to that.

• 33:49Speaker 02

They surely did. And you know, I am pretty good about staying very far away from the internet. It's not a good place for a human brain to be.

• 34:00Speaker 01

  Agree.

• 34:00Speaker 02

I also was pretty good at sheltering myself from that as well, but I definitely didn't understand the weight.

• 34:06Speaker 01

Yeah. Cause people are like, what? We don't even know her.

• 34:09Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 34:09Speaker 01

We've been here for eight seasons.

• 34:11Speaker 02

  Contested finale.

• 34:15Speaker 03

Stay tuned for more Armchair Expert if you dare.

• 34:21Dax Shepard?

This episode is brought to you by McDonald's. The Quarter Pounder with Cheese with Medium Fries and a Drink is now $8.

• 34:31Speaker 01

  What?

• 34:32Dax Shepard?

Okay. I need to talk about something that doesn't get enough respect. The Quarter Pounder with Cheese. This is not a casual burger. This is a crafted burger. We're talking a hundred percent fresh beef cooked right when you order it. No artificial flavors, no fillers, no preservatives, just beef doing what beef is supposed to do. And here's a detail I love. There's a cowbell sound in the kitchen. When somebody orders a Quarter Pounder with Cheese, a cowbell goes off and the grill master throws a fresh patty down. That's like having your own entrance music at McDonald's. I want a cowbell for everything in life. The onions are hand topped by someone who just knows the right amount. Two slices of cheese laid out in a star pattern. So every single bite gets cheese. And two pickles side by side. So you're never in a pickle desert.

• 35:16Dax Shepard?

Every bite is accounted for. Someone engineered this thing with love. I love a Quarter Pounder.

• 35:22Speaker 01

Me too. That's my order. It's a Quarter Pounder with cheese. I love it. I didn't know they put so much effort that they did a star formation. I should have known because you can taste it when there's effort.

• 35:35Dax Shepard?

Yeah. The love. Don't tell anyone this, but I'll put two of them back.

• 35:38Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 35:38Dax Shepard?

  I'm sitting.

• 35:39Speaker 01

  I'm not surprised.

• 35:40Dax Shepard?

The Quarter Pounder with Cheese with Fries and a Drink, now $8 for a limited time only, only at McDonald's. For a limited time only, prices and participation may vary. Prices may be higher in Hawaii, Alaska, and California, and for delivery. Fresh beef not available in Alaska and Hawaii. Offer not valid for delivery. We are supported by Squarespace. So here's something I think about a lot. Most people I talk to on this show, the ones doing really interesting things, they all had a version of their work that existed before anyone else saw it. It was just theirs, notes, ideas, projects they were tinkering with, and then at some point, they made the decision to share it. That's the part that's scary, right? Going from "I'm working on something" to "here's what I made." Rob went through the exact same thing, building our site on Squarespace, and what made it

• 36:24Dax Shepard?

doable was that he didn't have to become a web developer overnight. He just had to show up with the idea. Squarespace handles the rest. Beautiful templates that actually look like you hired someone, built an SEO so people can find you, email campaigns, scheduling, analytics, all under one roof. No code, no patchwork of random tools. And honestly, the thing I keep coming back to is how low the barrier is. If you've got something you've been building quietly and you're ready for people to see it, Squarespace makes that leap feel a lot less traumatic. Head to Squarespace.com/dax for a free trial, and when you're ready to launch, use offer code DAX to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain. We get support from our sponsor, Lilly. • 38:32Dax Shepard?

Okay, now this is where I become aware of you is Fargo.

• 38:36Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 38:36Dax Shepard?

  Betsy.

• 38:37Speaker 02

  Betsy Salverson.

• 38:37Dax Shepard?

  She has cancer.

• 38:38Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 38:38Dax Shepard?

  And she's Papa Ted's daughter.

• 38:40Speaker 02

  I love Ted Danson.

• 38:41Dax Shepard?

What a man. You racked up pretty quickly some pretty significant co-stars. You also did Wolf of Wall Street.

• 38:47Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 38:47Dax Shepard?

  Being opposite Leo.

• 38:49Speaker 01

  Do you get nervous?

• 38:50Speaker 02

I did then and I do now.

• 38:52Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 38:52Speaker 02

I get nervous with like any job. I go immediately to a place of I'm gonna fail or something.

• 38:57Speaker 01

  Impostor syndrome.

• 38:57Speaker 02

Impostor syndrome, yeah. But I was certainly so nervous on that set. That was such a huge set.

• 39:02Dax Shepard?

It's a great test of an actor. Like, if you can be in scenes with Leo and you're just as captivating.

• 39:07Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 39:08Dax Shepard?

That's a tall order. People need to think about it a little bit like you're playing one-on-one with Jordan. This person is gonna be riveting. That's why they're who they are. And you're gonna have to carry your side of it.

• 39:18Speaker 02

Well, I've never thought about it like that. That's very kind of you.

• 39:21Dax Shepard?

  But it's true.

• 39:22Speaker 01

It can also be a help because if they're that good.

• 39:25Speaker 02

  He's an extraordinary actor.

• 39:26Speaker 01

Yeah, you can sometimes get carried into their bubble.

• 39:30Dax Shepard?

I've been carried into people's bubbles.

• 39:32Speaker 02

I wish I'd been less afraid in the beginning.

• 39:34Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 39:34Speaker 02

I mean, I'd never been on something that big.

• 39:36Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 39:37Speaker 02

And then just by way of the energy of those sets and you're working with people who are at the top of their game.

• 39:42Dax Shepard?

  They already work together.

• 39:43Speaker 02

Yeah, but it's actually quite intimate. But the first two weeks, I mean, I was not in my body.

• 39:47Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 39:48Speaker 02

  Not even remotely.

• 39:49Speaker 01

When we talk about missing The Sopranos, I mean, that's probably what you really missed. Being able to be like, wow, I'm really doing it because you're so nervous.

• 39:57Dax Shepard?

I'm with one of the best directors to ever live.

• 39:59Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 39:59Dax Shepard?

With one of the best actors to ever live.

• 40:01Speaker 02

It's very wild to be in those situations.

• 40:04Dax Shepard?

It can be a disassociated experience.

• 40:06Speaker 02

It can be, but obviously, this is like a huge understatement. It's so profound and it continues to be profound. When I find myself in spaces with people whose work meant so much to me growing up, every time, I am so... Shocked.

• 40:20Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Now we're just gonna zip to. So Fargo, you were great. I loved you in Fargo.

• 40:24Speaker 02

I love that show very much.

• 40:26Dax Shepard?

  Okay, Palm Springs.

• 40:27Speaker 02

  Love that as well.

• 40:28Dax Shepard?

The next show I watched was Made for Love.

• 40:30Speaker 02

  Oh, you watched it?

• 40:31Dax Shepard?

  I did.

• 40:31Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 40:32Dax Shepard?

  I loved it.

• 40:33Speaker 02

Not everyone did. I have such a warm spot for that show, especially because the cast is so outrageous. So much of what we explored in that show is now reality.

• 40:43Dax Shepard?

You had an implant in you.

• 40:45Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 40:45Dax Shepard?

  From a tech billionaire husband.

• 40:46Speaker 02

I was like married to like an Elon Musk. And it really examined that whole thing. As well as having a very complicated father-daughter relationship with the astonishing Ray Romano. There was so much in there. And you know what's just sitting in a vault?

• 41:00Dax Shepard?

  Why?

• 41:01Speaker 02

We were part of the tax write-off that Warner Brothers did, where, remember they ripped a bunch of stuff off the platform?

• 41:08Dax Shepard?

Oh, they did? And just counted it as a loss or something?

• 41:11Speaker 02

It was like us, Westworld, that was the whole Coyote, Acme, what is that movie? And like Batgirl. We were part of that. So you can't even watch it. Oh, no.

• 41:20Dax Shepard?

  You're kidding?

• 41:20Speaker 02

  You cannot watch it.

• 41:21Dax Shepard?

  Can you not watch Westworld?

• 41:23Speaker 02

I think you can finally watch Westworld, but I know you can't find Made for Love. And it's such a bummer.

• 41:28Dax Shepard?

Okay, so I'm a little bit aware of this strategy. I used to work for General Motors. And so they have a fleet of cars that they loan to journalists so they can review them. And then this fleet of cars, when it's done being lent out, they can't really sell it because it would be a liability. It's been driven on racetracks. I used to drive these cars to the crusher.

• 41:44Speaker 02

  They just crush them?

• 41:44Dax Shepard?

Like, brand-new Corvette ZR1s. I was 16. I was like, oh, my God, how do I get this car not to be crushed?

• 41:49Speaker 02

  We're so tired now.

• 41:50Dax Shepard?

Because then it's a total write-off. I don't know if they still do this, but that's what they used to do. But yes, it's a complete write-off of the full value of the car. And now the car doesn't exist. I didn't realize they could do that with movies and TV shows. That's heartbreaking. You want to make sure your fucking work vanish?

• 42:04Speaker 02

Well, yeah. We worked on that show for three years. Wow. It's two full seasons.

• 42:08Dax Shepard?

That's the most you'd ever been given, clearly, right? I mean, that show is you.

• 42:12Speaker 02

I'm going through a ton. I just had never seen like a world like that either. There's so much that exists in that hub where it's all virtual reality. They just were exploring stuff. There's also stuff on it that is just such a big swing. I don't know if you watched season two. There's a character that has an affair with a dolphin. Oh, wow. It's really out there. I loved it.

• 42:32Dax Shepard?

It's going there, too. That's where our tech's gonna go. It's like AI is gonna let us talk to dolphins. People are gonna fall in love with dolphins.

• 42:38Speaker 02

This is like what it was exploring.

• 42:39Dax Shepard?

We've done more content on human dolphin affairs than any other show in history.

• 42:43Speaker 01

Yeah, we talk a lot about dolphin love.

• 42:45Dax Shepard?

  We've got a whole conclusion.

• 42:46Speaker 02

Well, then you're gonna wanna petition to get paid for lying back on the earth.

• 42:50Dax Shepard?

We decided the only ethical version is a male dolphin is allowed to date a female human.

• 42:55Speaker 01

You did. I'm not fully on board with that.

• 42:58Speaker 02

Oh, I certainly know just a male. No, no, no.

• 43:00Dax Shepard?

That the female dolphin's in love, but a dolphin male is gonna decide whether they are intimate.

• 43:04Speaker 02

  I don't like the collab.

• 43:05Speaker 01

  Yeah, I get that.

• 43:07Speaker 02

Yeah, I would just prefer to keep it.

• 43:10Dax Shepard?

Think of the laugh you and your dolphin husband will have in 20 years when you're listening back to this interview.

• 43:15Speaker 01

We had a armchair listener write in and tell us about his experience. He fell in love with this dolphin at an aquarium.

• 43:25Dax Shepard?

  They had like a moment.

• 43:26Speaker 01

Yeah, but he was like, it was real. I knew this dolphin. It knew me. We had a real connection. He didn't seem crazy. I really believed him.

• 43:36Speaker 02

I can get behind that. I can't totally get behind like, yeah, obviously. I understand. I even feel that with my dog, where I'm like, oh, we're really connected. And you were found on the street. That's wild.

• 43:49Speaker 01

Do you think maybe you knew your dog before?

• 43:53Speaker 02

  I don't know.

• 43:54Speaker 01

No, I'm really asking. I'm starting to really take on that theory.

• 43:59Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 43:59Speaker 01

  We've known some of us.

• 44:02Speaker 02

  I do believe that.

• 44:03Speaker 01

  I think it's real. You don't. It's okay. You don't have to.

• 44:07Dax Shepard?

I'm happy for you in love that you're open to astrology and you're open to that notion. That makes life more fun and interesting. I'm almost envious.

• 44:15Speaker 01

It's not necessarily lovers. It's like the dog where you're just like, this is not the first time.

• 44:22Speaker 02

Totally. It's just like how people find each other. How do you find each other on this big planet? It would make sense to be like, we've met before. I don't think there's enough. Wow, I'm really gonna go out on a limb here. Atoms to go around? Isn't there like a whole thing with like-

• 44:34Speaker 01

That's the quote we're gonna pull.

• 44:35Speaker 02

Atoms and molecules that you can't get rid of them?

• 44:37Speaker 01

Yeah, energy can't be created or destroyed.

• 44:39Speaker 02

So like, we've shared atoms, anyway.

• 44:41Dax Shepard?

Sure, sure, they're forming and reforming, yeah.

• 44:43Speaker 02

  I can't tell if you're glazing over.

• 44:45Dax Shepard?

No, not at all. I have kids. The closest thing I can experience spirituality is through the children in that I very much agree with the very common cliche, which is, when you have kids, it feels like they've existed forever.

• 44:56Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 44:57Dax Shepard?

And that very much feels like, there's no way these two little girls didn't always exist.

• 45:01Speaker 01

They also kind of did. They lived in their mom that lived in the grandma.

• 45:05Speaker 02

  That's very cool.

• 45:06Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 45:06Speaker 01

It's cool. There's some spiritual stuff going on.

• 45:09Dax Shepard?

I'm coming to, yes, embrace that notion of, you think of it as so split between my father and I, but there's no split. It has the illusion of a boundary, his body and my body, but they're so the same thing. I'm open to that part.

• 45:24Speaker 02

  But not open to astrology?

• 45:25Dax Shepard?

  Not at all, no.

• 45:26Speaker 01

Where do you land on astrology?

• 45:27Speaker 02

Uh, where do I land on astrology? I can understand that the time of year we're born can affect us. I don't put a ton of stock in it.

• 45:36Speaker 01

  That's fair.

• 45:36Speaker 02

But I also sometimes will read about traits. I'm a Leo.

• 45:42Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 45:43Speaker 02

And I'll read the trait of being a Leo and I'll be like, ugh, that's me.

• 45:46Speaker 01

  Nailed it.

• 45:47Speaker 02

Nailed it. And in a way, I think that sometimes makes me feel less judgmental of myself.

• 45:52Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, forgiving.

• 45:53Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 45:53Dax Shepard?

  That's a great quality.

• 45:54Speaker 02

  Where I'm like, oh, okay.

• 45:55Speaker 01

That's very Leo to do that.

• 45:59Dax Shepard?

Yeah, when I read the Capricorn description, I'm like, yeah, that's spot on. But I also think if I read any description you told me it was mine, I would find-

• 46:05Speaker 02

  You can completely do that.

• 46:06Speaker 01

Yours is so spot on. You're like a triple cat.

• 46:11Speaker 02

  What are you?

• 46:11Speaker 01

A Virgo, and I'm double Virgo. I'm laughing, it's so important.

• 46:16Speaker 02

I know, but sometimes I love those conversations too.

• 46:19Dax Shepard?

I'm gonna write an unauthorized biography of you, and there's gonna be chapters. One's gonna be the pit.

• 46:24Speaker 02

Have you watched The Pit? I haven't watched The Pit, but I keep hearing about The Pit. It's great.

• 46:29Dax Shepard?

I'm gonna bring up the resort simply because I just want to say William Jackson Harper is like the sweetest royal live.

• 46:35Speaker 02

We've played husband and wife twice.

• 46:37Dax Shepard?

  You have?

• 46:37Speaker 02

Yes, in a play, which I don't know if you would have seen. We have played a married couple on the brink of divorce twice. And he's one of my favorite people on the planet, one of my favorite actors.

• 46:52Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 46:52Speaker 02

  I love working with him.

• 46:54Dax Shepard?

America will know him as Cheedy.

• 46:56Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 46:56Dax Shepard?

If you watched The Good Place.

• 46:57Speaker 02

  I just love him.

• 46:58Dax Shepard?

Okay, alas, we've landed at the Penguin. So how did you get this role? No. Yes. I also want to hear the wicked audition story, which is fantastic.

• 47:09Speaker 02

They reached out to me and asked if I would meet with Lauren Lafranc, our showrunner, Matt Reeves, who did the movie, Craig Zobel, who directed our first three episodes. And they sent me just the first episode and I sat with them on Zoom for two hours because I'm a huge Batman fan. Oh, you are? Yeah, huge.

• 47:24Dax Shepard?

  How would we define huge?

• 47:25Speaker 02

As a kid, I had posters and outfits. I was like a real disciple of Batman Returns. Oh, no, were you in your cape while you had your shaved head? A cape would have really made it.

• 47:36Dax Shepard?

  Put a bow on it.

• 47:37Speaker 02

Yeah, no, I didn't have a cape then.

• 47:39Dax Shepard?

  But Batman really attracts outcasts.

• 47:41Speaker 02

When I look back on, why would I have loved that so much as a kid? Not that I want to analyze it too much because I also loved Beetlejuice. I really love big worlds. And you know, that Tim Burton Batman Returns, you're like inside of a painting. Yeah. Michelle Pfeiffer, it is truly like I'll show everyone who's ever bullied me. Yeah. That is kind of the vibe.

• 48:01Dax Shepard?

But like Superman's the jock in high school. You're gorgeous, but Batman, it's almost like Will Hunting, too. He is an outcast, but he has superpowers and he's got all this wealth.

• 48:10Speaker 02

  Wait, what's Will Hunting?

• 48:11Dax Shepard?

  Good Will Hunting.

• 48:12Speaker 02

  Never seen it.

• 48:14Speaker 02

  Sorry. You gotta go.

• 48:15Dax Shepard?

I think we gotta end this.

• 48:16Speaker 02

  You gotta go.

• 48:17Speaker 01

  Sorry, I can't continue on.

• 48:19Speaker 02

Never seen it, but I've seen a couple scenes where they're like, who did this problem on the board? Oh, no.

• 48:24Dax Shepard?

Our notion is that we're different, but we're special. It's a very appealing archetype.

• 48:29Speaker 02

I'm not terribly familiar with the Marvel Universe, but I think that there's a real good versus evil in that, in the way that Superman is. And in Batman, it's like really blurry. Because he's going out. Yes, Batman himself is on the right side of justice, but he's also going out dressed in a costume. He's so traumatized and he's looking to put himself in these dangerous situations to right a wrong that was done to him, and so are the villains. And because none of them have superpowers. Interestingly, with your relationship to theater.

• 48:57Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 48:57Speaker 02

Like, I wish I could fly and I would love to. And I think it's so cool.

• 49:01Dax Shepard?

But now we're in a completely different reality. Batman seemingly could exist in reality, and so could Iron Man seemingly.

• 49:07Speaker 02

It's like why I think, oh, my God, get ready for this. But X-Men, I was always like, yeah. Because I was like, I could see you could fill someone with an exoskeleton. There was like something around it. Not that I need to be 100% believing something, but yeah, Batman seemed like it could happen. We're living in a world run by villains. It feels like sometimes right now. They may not have capes or specific.

• 49:26Dax Shepard?

  Lairs.

• 49:27Speaker 02

Yeah, lairs. Although I think they all do have lairs. They do have lairs, but it seemed real.

• 49:32Dax Shepard?

And did you have to read at any point for them?

• 49:35Speaker 02

Yeah, I had a test with Colin.

• 49:36Dax Shepard?

And was he in the full garb?

• 49:38Speaker 02

He was not. We read a scene together, the scene in the first episode where we have lunch and martinis. And it's this long sit down and I was incredibly nervous. And then I found out a couple of days later.

• 49:51Dax Shepard?

But he's a sweetheart too, right? He was probably helpful.

• 49:54Speaker 02

  Salt of the earth, sweetest.

• 49:55Dax Shepard?

  Very Irish.

• 49:56Speaker 02

I've really lucked out with co-stars. Have all been really golden hearts. He is an extraordinary actor and an extraordinary human being.

• 50:04Speaker 01

The first time you saw him in the suit, the Penguin character?

• 50:08Speaker 02

It was surreal. It was at a camera test. That makeup is so incredible. But like, I'd watched the movie. It was sort of like, oh, the guy from the movie.

• 50:16Speaker 01

  Right.

• 50:17Dax Shepard?

  I didn't see the movie.

• 50:18Speaker 02

  It's really, really great.

• 50:19Dax Shepard?

  Who's our Batman?

• 50:20Speaker 02

Robert Pattinson. I love his interpretation because he really. Really leans into the blurring of the line between someone who's so damaged going out, looking to feel things.

• 50:31Dax Shepard?

  Hurt themselves.

• 50:32Speaker 02

  Yes, it's a great movie.

• 50:33Speaker 01

Hearing that description of Batman, what you think is right, I'm really surprised you aren't more into Batman.

• 50:39Dax Shepard?

I do love Batman and there's no reason I haven't seen the recent one, other than my kids probably wouldn't have watched it at the time. And I get to see very few movies. Ten and twelve.

• 50:47Speaker 02

  It's dark.

• 50:48Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 50:49Speaker 02

This is the other thing Matt did so brilliantly. Burton is very heightened and you're almost in an art deco. Matt's film feels like it's right now.

• 50:55Dax Shepard?

Darker than Nolan, because Nolan went dark too. Those Nolan ones are fucking great.

• 51:01Speaker 02

Of a world. They're different, but they both feel like you're in New York current day.

• 51:04Dax Shepard?

Yeah, and you're scared. Okay, so you play Sofia Falcone and you're the daughter of my boss Carmine. You've spent 10 years in Arkham. You're in there for 10 years. You're tortured.

• 51:17Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 51:18Dax Shepard?

And you've got a pretty sizable axe to grind.

• 51:21Speaker 02

  Yeah, wrongfully imprisoned.

• 51:23Dax Shepard?

Okay, and I hate to have to always, and if I were you, I would kind of be annoyed by this because you got to talk about Colin every time we talk about this, which is, I think, in a weird way unfair to you. I don't know that Colin has to talk about you every interview he does. So that part feels unfair, but I'm going to bring him up only to say, A, he's insanely talented. He is one of the greats and he has the benefit of this enormous artifice, this huge prosthetic everything. So it's a very attention grabbing scene partner you have. But I want to say this is such a testament to you. You don't have nearly that amount of stuff to work with and you're blasting him in scenes. Like you're just so fucking powerful and terrifying and subtle and plain opposite.

• 52:07Speaker 01

I mean, you're the one everyone has been talking about since the show came out.

• 52:11Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 52:11Speaker 01

Even though he's him, everyone's talking about your performance.

• 52:15Speaker 02

  That's very kind.

• 52:15Dax Shepard?

And I just think it's harder because you're up against a force of nature in a huge costume and you're just blasting and scaring all of us. And it's so impressive. Would you be afraid to say you're proud? Are you proud of that?

• 52:29Speaker 02

  I am proud of it.

• 52:30Dax Shepard?

  Good.

• 52:31Speaker 02

I feel like I am proud of so many of the things I've been in, which is different than being like, I did a good job. Whenever I've watched things I've done, I've been like, mm, I would have done that differently. You can tinker with it forever, but I'm certainly very proud of that experience and of that character. I love that character so much.

• 52:48Dax Shepard?

I mean, it's a real two-hander in a sense. The upside is 10, 12 years ago, this show would have been about the son of Carmine.

• 52:56Speaker 02

Yeah. One of the other things I'm really proud of with this show, and this is a real testament to our showrunner Lauren, is that I've had a lot of interactions with people about Sofia, and it's with people who would not usually be part of the demo of watching a show that's in the Batman universe.

• 53:12Dax Shepard?

Like the old woman at the concert?

• 53:14Speaker 02

Yes, like an older woman, actually women.

• 53:16Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, you say women.

• 53:18Speaker 02

That's been really profound, and it is because she is such an outsider, and she does this thing. She'd been very hurt.

• 53:25Dax Shepard?

  We like that.

• 53:26Speaker 02

Yeah, and then she lets everybody have it. There's a real escapism, and obviously because you understand what she's been through, but to see her absolutely annihilate everyone who's ever wronged her, and that she's in this world that keeps telling her that she's crazy and that she's not worth anything. And so I think that has reached a lot of people, which is very profound.

• 53:47Speaker 01

  It's very of the moment.

• 53:48Dax Shepard?

Or that you're in a subdom relationship with the doctor.

• 53:51Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 53:51Dax Shepard?

It's so twisted, and I kind of love it.

• 53:54Speaker 02

I did too. Even Colin and I, I haven't seen a relationship like that. There's a real chemistry there, but what is that chemistry? It's like the only other person-

• 54:03Dax Shepard?

  Can feel each other's pain.

• 54:04Speaker 02

Yes, and knows how to twist the knife. But I don't know like how you would categorize the chemistry of those two characters.

• 54:09Dax Shepard?

They should get married at some point.

• 54:11Speaker 01

Well, yeah, because that is what-

• 54:12Speaker 02

  I don't think so.

• 54:12Speaker 01

The most intimate partner does have that ability-

• 54:14Speaker 02

  Right.

• 54:15Speaker 01

To know your weaknesses and use it.

• 54:16Speaker 02

But it feels like familial, or it's like kindred spirits is how I would describe it.

• 54:20Dax Shepard?

Yeah, it's just two very wounded people.

• 54:22Speaker 01

You probably knew each other in another life.

• 54:24Speaker 02

  Yeah, sure, sure.

• 54:25Speaker 01

I mean, I guess we're circling back to that.

• 54:27Speaker 02

With the doctor too. How do you quantify? I thought Lauren did that so beautifully. There's like these relationships where you're like, what is this? And not in a way where you're like, oh, and this is this, and this is that.

• 54:36Speaker 01

  Yeah, ambiguous.

• 54:37Speaker 02

  It's ambiguous.

• 54:38Dax Shepard?

  There'll be season two, right?

• 54:40Speaker 02

  We don't know.

• 54:41Dax Shepard?

How could you not know? It's a big hit. What are they waiting for?

• 54:44Speaker 02

  I don't know.

• 54:45Dax Shepard?

  Wasn't a huge hit?

• 54:46Speaker 02

You gotta get on the phone.

• 54:47Dax Shepard?

  I'm gonna call somebody.

• 54:48Speaker 02

Yeah. Not that that shoot wasn't a challenge. It's like the middle of winter in New York, all nights. Really intense material. But I gotta say, it was such a golden experience. Our crew was incredible. The cast was incredible. From people who would come in for a day to like recurring. We all really loved it and believed in it.

• 55:08Dax Shepard?

It must've taken a long time to shoot because it looks impeccable.

• 55:11Speaker 02

We also were shut down with the strikes for the six months in between. So it was eight months total or something. So it was like four months, then six months off, then four months.

• 55:19Dax Shepard?

  Okay, for eight episodes.

• 55:20Speaker 02

  Yeah, long.

• 55:21Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I just love it because again, yeah, I'm not a big into superheroes. This is like a mob show to me.

• 55:26Speaker 02

Yeah. It's like a mixture of both, which I really like. Because then there are these moments where you're like, oh, my God, I'm in Gotham. It's Batman. That's like what I loved about a lot of the Arkham stuff. For me as a fan, I was like, oh, my God, the uniform. Oh, my God, we're back. Some of the other characters in Arkham in the comics go on to be other villains.

• 55:42Dax Shepard?

  It's a breeding ground.

• 55:43Speaker 02

  Yeah, it's so cool.

• 55:44Dax Shepard?

Okay, you got nominated for a Golden Globe. You got nominated for a SAG Award. You got nominated for Critics' Choice Award. And then when do they nominate Emmy people?

• 55:53Speaker 02

  Soon, I think.

• 55:54Dax Shepard?

Soon. Okay, will you please tell us? This Wicked story is so funny.

• 55:59Speaker 02

  Oh, God.

• 56:00Dax Shepard?

  You don't have to.

• 56:01Speaker 02

No, I will. I just feel like I've told it so many times.

• 56:03Dax Shepard?

  You don't have to.

• 56:04Speaker 02

No, but now I wanna know. Basically, you've auditioned. There's nothing more embarrassing.

• 56:09Dax Shepard?

  It's really something.

• 56:10Speaker 02

And sometimes you go in on these things. I knew I couldn't hit that note. Do you know Wicked? Yeah, the movie and the play. Yeah. Are you talking about the play?

• 56:18Dax Shepard?

No, no, the John Chu movie and for Alphabot. So she's got.

• 56:22Speaker 02

You gotta hit this. You know, the one.

• 56:24Dax Shepard?

Do it, do it, do it.

• 56:25Speaker 02

I can't do it. I refuse that riff at the end when she transcends, ascends and transcends, actually. I knew there was no way I was gonna hit it. But you have to say yes to the opportunity and then.

• 56:35Dax Shepard?

Absolutely. And you start working with a vocal coach or anything to try to get yourself?

• 56:39Speaker 02

  This was deep in COVID.

• 56:41Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 56:42Speaker 02

So like, no. And was it on Zoom? No, it was in person. For John? Yeah, who was so lovely.

• 56:48Dax Shepard?

  What a sweetheart.

• 56:49Speaker 02

God, and is it one of those you're in the waiting room? You're like hearing.

• 56:53Dax Shepard?

  Oh, people fucking.

• 56:54Speaker 02

  People.

• 56:54Dax Shepard?

  Break glass.

• 56:56Speaker 02

Break glass and you're like, uh oh.

• 56:59Speaker 02

I spent so many years auditioning for musicals before once and once matched the way I sing.

• 57:04Dax Shepard?

  Yep.

• 57:05Speaker 02

But before that, I would be in these waiting rooms for years, going in on these big musicals and just hearing through the door.

• 57:12Dax Shepard?

  Kristin Chenoweth.

• 57:13Speaker 02

Exactly. That type of voice. And then I would go in and I'd be like, I'm singing.

• 57:18Dax Shepard?

  A Bob Dylan song?

• 57:19Speaker 02

Yeah. I would sing Oh Darling by The Beatles. Oh my gosh, how sweet. I used to sing Carbon Monoxide by Regina Spektor. Do you know that song?

• 57:27Dax Shepard?

  I don't know that one.

• 57:28Speaker 02

I know her. I don't know if I know that one. It, to me, sounded musical theory, but it's about killing yourself. Oh, wow. I would go in because I was like, oh, I could give them a journey or something. And so I would be hearing glass breaking from behind the door. And then I would come in and I'd be like, I will be singing Carbon Monoxide by Regina Spektor. You would just sort of slowly see them.

• 57:50Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 57:51Speaker 02

I mean, I tried and it eventually worked. Yeah, exactly.

• 57:54Dax Shepard?

I've heard her tell it. She's just haunted by the ah for weeks.

• 57:58Speaker 02

For weeks. That's all I could think about because I know it so well.

• 58:01Dax Shepard?

And she goes in and she said, the noise that came out.

• 58:04Speaker 02

Tight. Tight. Vocally tight. Go through any YouTube compilation of national anthems gone wrong. And it's like that. When they try to get to like, ah, the rocket, like, but they've started it too high. It was like that. Yeah.

• 58:17Dax Shepard?

They start at the very top of the range.

• 58:19Speaker 02

When you can hear in a national anthem, when someone's like, oh, say, and you're like, no, no, no, no, no, no. You're not going to get there. You're not going to get there. And it's that. I knew there was no world in which. Were you like, can I start over? And it was again, again and again.

• 58:34Dax Shepard?

  Oh, I'm so.

• 58:34Speaker 02

  She's like.

• 58:35Dax Shepard?

Proud of you for putting yourself through that.

• 58:37Speaker 02

Yeah. You gotta keep doing it. I remember I auditioned a bunch of times for Girls. Oh.

• 58:42Dax Shepard?

  Oh, okay. New York actor.

• 58:43Speaker 02

I could see, yeah. Every 23 year old girl in New York City was gunning for that incredible show. And I auditioned a couple of times for it. And then I remember watching it and I was like, oh my God, I was way off tone wise. I don't know what I thought it was.

• 58:59Dax Shepard?

  Sex and the City?

• 59:00Speaker 02

I just saw Sex and the City for the first time. I had also not seen Sex and the City.

• 59:03Speaker 01

  Oh, wow.

• 59:04Speaker 02

Another one of the greatest shows ever made.

• 59:05Speaker 01

  It's such a good show.

• 59:07Speaker 02

God, what was I doing? I was remembering going back and thinking about my audition and I was playing it a real like, well, what do you got? We're like four gals in New York. And I watched it and I was like, oh my God, Kristen.

• 59:16Dax Shepard?

  Flapper-y?

• 59:17Speaker 02

Yeah, I guess, which was like totally not what it is. Or just like four girls in New York just trying to get around or whatever. And then I watched it and I was like, oh my God, I really.

• 59:27Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, it's a Sundance movie.

• 59:29Speaker 02

  Yeah, like no wonder.

• 59:31Speaker 01

I have to say, I'm impressed that you went in for Wicked at this stage in your career, knowing this is gonna be hard for me. Because I think so many actors and actresses, once they hit a certain level, are not like, you got to. They're like, I can't and I don't want to embarrass myself. And now the stakes are like hot. Things are going well.

• 59:49Speaker 02

That was like, I can sing a lot of these songs. You do this delusional deal making with yourself where you're like, well, I love that musical so much. I knew that was in no way, shape or form a reality, but I was like, I'm gonna try.

• 59:58Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, good for you.

• 1:00:00Speaker 01

  I think that's great.

• 1:00:01Speaker 02

It's such a strange part of our jobs. Sometimes there's a comfort in it. Because sometimes I'll do jobs where they've just offered it to me. Very blessed to be in that position, but then you show up and you're like, hope you like what I've been working on. I remember there was a, oh my God, this is so embarrassing. I did an indie film when I was 25. And it was like the first time I'd been offered something without having to audition. And this woman had seen me do an episode of 30 Rock. I played this really big character. And it was like a small part, two or three scenes in this movie. And she was like, I'm giving you free rein to be a character. And I was like, oh my God, this is my dream. For weeks with these three scenes, I was like, okay, she's gonna be this pill-addled, sort of stumbling on heels. I was going for Catherine O'Hara crossing the field in Best in Show.

• 1:00:44Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:00:45Speaker 02

Yeah, I got there and we did the first scene. And I began and she was like, stop, what are you, um? Doing and I was like, what am I doing? Like great question. Yeah, I feel like and like I'd watched clips of Anna Nicole Smith. Oh, wow. She was supposed to be this party girl that always said a loud thing at a party. Like a Samantha type? Not even Samantha's more together, just really out of it. But I'd really missed the mark. And so they held for a second while she took me aside and she was like, yeah, I don't think you can do that. Can you just do a southern accent? And I was like, yeah, yes, absolutely. I'm a southern accent, sure. I'm a regen or you're so humiliated. And then I was like, yeah, give me um, five minutes. Yeah, exactly.

• 1:01:29Speaker 02

And then I like ran to my honey wagon.

• 1:01:31Dax Shepard?

I'm gonna cry for four of them.

• 1:01:32Speaker 02

Yeah, I'm gonna cry for four of them for a minute. I'm gonna just try to be like, well.

• 1:01:37Dax Shepard?

  We gotta bury the body.

• 1:01:38Speaker 02

We gotta bury the body. And also people aren't stupid. And it was a group scene. It was a group scene of a dance at someone's house too, where my character walks onto the dance floor to no music. Everyone doing that like horrible shuffle. And I walk in to be like, hey, such and such heard about the thing. And then they were like, ah, cut. So also everyone else is now gonna see me do take two with an accent.

• 1:02:04Speaker 02

  So anyway, deeply humbling.

• 1:02:05Dax Shepard?

What an endeavor. Well, this segues perfectly into my last question, which is you're being thoroughly recognized as you deserve. But it's happening 20 years into your career. You turn 40 this year?

• 1:02:15Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:02:16Dax Shepard?

I guess my question is, do you have gratitude that it was delayed?

• 1:02:21Speaker 02

  Immense.

• 1:02:22Dax Shepard?

Tell me, how would 25 year old you or 30 year old you have handled?

• 1:02:26Speaker 02

I'm immensely grateful that it's happened in stages. I've gotten to be a part of things that I have genuinely believed in and would watch and worked with people. And it's been a long but steady ride. When I look at the pressure on people in their early twenties who get recognized in a way. You've been to award shows, they are really intense.

• 1:02:49Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:02:50Speaker 02

There are many things at once. You're seeing people that you haven't seen in a while, who are friends and it's very joyful. But you're being filmed the whole time. You're wearing clothes that you wouldn't wear, that you're not comfortable in, but that you feel fabulous in. Everything has a dichotomy to it, every step of the way. To stand on a red carpet and get your name screamed by 80 people is extremely unnatural.

• 1:03:09Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:03:10Speaker 02

And every time it happens, I walk away being like, huh. I feel that feeling when like your car goes over a hill.

• 1:03:16Dax Shepard?

It feels dangerous a little bit.

• 1:03:17Speaker 02

Yes. And then each time I have to be like, oh yeah, that's not. Natural, not a position you would normally find yourself in.

• 1:03:23Speaker 01

Yeah, like it's okay to not get used to that.

• 1:03:25Speaker 02

Yes. If I were in those situations when I was younger, it's pressure. I'm so glad that I got to be in my early twenties in New York, just messing up. And I think I also understand too, more in a way that I may not have when I was younger, the chaos of it all and the beauty of it all and the machine of it all. I've peeked behind some curtains at this point and that doesn't make me any less grateful for those curtains.

• 1:03:50Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:03:51Speaker 01

Back then, when it was happening, when you were in all these things, but you weren't necessarily on the cover of all these things.

• 1:03:57Speaker 02

  Sure.

• 1:03:58Speaker 01

Did you have resentment then? Were you like, why am I not, I'm in all these things? I'm working all the time.

• 1:04:03Speaker 02

No, I had that when I was working really consistently in huge off Broadway, you know, Lincoln Center, Playwrights Horizons, New York Theatre Workshop, institutions in New York, and I was broke. Couldn't afford an AC unit. I couldn't afford my cellphone. And I couldn't understand how I was working but starving.

• 1:04:19Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:19Speaker 02

And I remember feeling real frustrated at being like, but I don't know what else to do. And certainly when I would lose out on certain jobs, I would audition in pilot season for anything from a sorority sister to dead body and trunk.

• 1:04:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:04:34Speaker 02

  And I wouldn't get them.

• 1:04:35Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:04:35Speaker 02

And I would be like, what am I doing wrong? Why isn't this, not even happening in a wire and I such and such, but just why can't I afford a cellphone?

• 1:04:42Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:04:43Speaker 02

And yet I'm getting the validation of being in all these plays and working with like these incredible people. So that I would say that-

• 1:04:49Dax Shepard?

  There's a lot of dissonance.

• 1:04:49Speaker 02

  Yeah, that was very frustrating.

• 1:04:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:04:52Speaker 02

Um, I'm very grateful that I've been able to take the time that I have.

• 1:04:57Dax Shepard?

It's kind of the theme of the year a little bit, like Goggins.

• 1:05:00Speaker 01

I was about to say, it's so Walton Goggins.

• 1:05:01Dax Shepard?

Yeah, it's very Walton Goggins where it's just like, oh, right. I now remember that this guy's been great for the last 20 years.

• 1:05:08Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 1:05:08Dax Shepard?

  And I've been observing.

• 1:05:09Speaker 01

He's been in everything and been great in everything. And now people are really starting to say his name.

• 1:05:14Dax Shepard?

51 years old, he's on the cover of everything.

• 1:05:16Speaker 02

I also forget, this is not the first time I've been asked this. You've been at this for a while and maybe that's a layer of the imposter syndrome or something, but I consistently think I've only been at this for a couple of years.

• 1:05:27Dax Shepard?

  Oh, okay.

• 1:05:27Speaker 02

It's so odd. And then it's only when it's presented to me.

• 1:05:30Dax Shepard?

Yeah. How do you hear that observation?

• 1:05:32Speaker 02

I'm so touched by it. I think it's that thing of, in my head, I always feel like I'm maybe 27.

• 1:05:39Dax Shepard?

  Right, right, right, right.

• 1:05:39Speaker 02

I don't know what that thing is called. Is that called being alive?

• 1:05:42Dax Shepard?

And that Fargo was four years ago.

• 1:05:43Speaker 02

Right. That all feels very fresh still. I constantly forget that I'm 39.

• 1:05:49Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:50Speaker 02

Always. I'm like, oh, me? No.

• 1:05:52Dax Shepard?

Yeah, wait till you're 50. Well, this has been a delight and you've so earned all this attention in fanfare. Yours is fucking crazy talented.

• 1:06:00Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 1:06:00Dax Shepard?

So I'm really happy for you.

• 1:06:01Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 1:06:01Speaker 01

We're happy for that little girl with the

• 1:06:03Speaker 02

Yeah, I am too. I am too.

• 1:06:05Dax Shepard?

You should go to the Emmys and recreate that exact look.

• 1:06:09Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:06:09Dax Shepard?

  Maybe even get reverse Invisalign.

• 1:06:11Speaker 01

Now, the irony, because you do have a ton of status, everyone would be like, "Oh, she's so cool."

• 1:06:18Speaker 02

  Oh, my god.

• 1:06:19Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:20Speaker 02

She gave herself an uneven buzz cut.

• 1:06:21Speaker 01

  It's like the Venezuelan.

• 1:06:22Dax Shepard?

  I want to gangster.

• 1:06:23Speaker 02

I know. I wonder where she is now.

• 1:06:25Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:06:25Dax Shepard?

Well, Chris, it's delightful meeting you.

• 1:06:27Speaker 02

So nice to meet you too.

• 1:06:28Dax Shepard?

  It's been a pleasure.

• 1:06:28Speaker 02

Thank you so much for having me.

• 1:06:30Dax Shepard?

Everyone watch The Penguin if you haven't already. I didn't spoil anything, even though I wanted to.

• 1:06:36Speaker 03

Stay tuned for more Armchair Expert, if you dare.

• 1:06:45Dax Shepard?

I sure hope there weren't any mistakes in that episode, but we'll find out when my mom, Mrs. Monica, comes in and tells us what was wrong.

• 1:06:56Dax Shepard?

  What?

• 1:06:58Dax Shepard?

  Talk to me.

• 1:06:59Speaker 01

  No, nothing.

• 1:06:59Dax Shepard?

Off the record, talk to me.

• 1:07:01Speaker 01

  No, everything's great.

• 1:07:02Dax Shepard?

  Everything's golden.

• 1:07:02Speaker 01

  It's just busy.

• 1:07:04Dax Shepard?

Busy. Yeah, you had to not come to a movie last night.

• 1:07:08Speaker 01

  I know. Was it great?

• 1:07:11Dax Shepard?

It was great. It was great, yeah.

• 1:07:14Speaker 01

I'm sad about that. It was the right decision, I will say that.

• 1:07:18Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:07:19Speaker 01

But, uh, but I do really want to see it, but I'll just see it in the movie theater.

• 1:07:24Dax Shepard?

I wonder if you'll see it earlier than that, but yes, you would. Well, let me ask you. No, I can't ask you, because then we need to say.

• 1:07:29Speaker 01

Yeah, we don't want to give it away, but we had a guest coming up that we are

• 1:07:33Dax Shepard?

  People are kind of guessing.

• 1:07:34Speaker 01

  Whatever.

• 1:07:34Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:07:34Speaker 01

  We are so excited about.

• 1:07:37Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:07:37Speaker 01

  And

• 1:07:38Dax Shepard?

  Slash scared.

• 1:07:39Speaker 01

Has been a long time coming and is a scaly one.

• 1:07:41Dax Shepard?

  Scaly.

• 1:07:42Speaker 01

And we were invited to see a movie early.

• 1:07:44Dax Shepard?

  That she's in.

• 1:07:48Speaker 01

We were invited to see a project early and I uh.

• 1:07:55Dax Shepard?

The timing was great because my brother and sister in law are visiting and I got to seem like a real shooter. Like, hey, do you want to come to the screen with me? It's a movie they're dying to see. So I felt like I was so cool.

• 1:08:05Speaker 01

  You're the cool brother.

• 1:08:07Dax Shepard?

I felt cool for those two and a half hours.

• 1:08:09Speaker 01

Yeah, um, but I had to miss it because of of work.

• 1:08:16Speaker 01

Yeah, it's just a busy week. We're heading into the summer.

• 1:08:18Dax Shepard?

Have I publicly thanked you already about editing? I mean, I tried to occasionally, but I'm in a wave right now, really having renewed gratitude. Right? Because I'm editing and I it's miserable. Editing is miserable. It's absolutely miserable.

• 1:08:33Speaker 01

There are days. So yesterday I was going to edit two.

• 1:08:41Speaker 01

And I was in one and I started at 1:30 and I ended at six and I was like.

• 1:08:46Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 1:08:47Speaker 01

I I actually like I can't do it. I can't do another one. And I don't think if you haven't edited, you don't understand that. It's like, well, you could have. You could have pushed yourself and you could have. But your brain will shut down.

• 1:09:04Dax Shepard?

Well, I'll add to and do you have this experience? So I'll do these chunks on days off. We don't have. I try to do two episodes in those days. Yeah. And it's like seven, eight hours of editing.

• 1:09:14Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:09:15Dax Shepard?

And what happens is for me, I slowly start hating everything I hear. Like, it's just like, I don't know. Towards the end, I'm like, just cut everything. I don't want to hear anyone ever talk again. And so like, you're wondering if your decisions you're making are the same at the end of the episodes they were at the beginning.

• 1:09:32Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:09:33Dax Shepard?

Yeah. I mean, you probably don't have that because you do it so much.

• 1:09:36Speaker 01

Yeah, I I don't. I don't have that because there is no um, there's no end, right? Like, you're editing a project that's.

• 1:09:45Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, I'm doing 12.

• 1:09:46Speaker 01

  You're doing 12.

• 1:09:47Dax Shepard?

And there's an end in sight.

• 1:09:48Speaker 01

There's an end in sight. So I could I could almost see that being in some ways worse because it's like, I just I gotta be done with.

• 1:09:54Dax Shepard?

I haven't accepted that I have to do this.

• 1:09:56Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:09:57Dax Shepard?

Yeah, there's still that like, yeah.

• 1:09:59Speaker 01

But I am, I it is funny that you brought that up and we're talking about it because um. I'm also, as I warned you on the last fact check, I think I am PMSing this week.

• 1:10:10Dax Shepard?

This week? I thought that was next week.

• 1:10:12Speaker 01

  Nope, this week.

• 1:10:13Dax Shepard?

  Okay, so right now you're-

• 1:10:14Speaker 01

The period will start hopefully on Friday.

• 1:10:17Dax Shepard?

Do you have your, do you have your nixies?

• 1:10:19Speaker 01

  I have my-

• 1:10:20Dax Shepard?

  You got your nixies?

• 1:10:21Speaker 01

  Ready to go.

• 1:10:23Dax Shepard?

They're laid out like a flat man. They're, they're just stacked up, ready to go.

• 1:10:28Speaker 01

Yeah, they're prepped and ready, folded.

• 1:10:31Dax Shepard?

  They're on deck.

• 1:10:31Speaker 01

Yeah, but along with the Ziploc baggies.

• 1:10:34Dax Shepard?

  You gotta have them.

• 1:10:36Speaker 01

No, I don't want to be on the record saying I don't do that because I don't need it.

• 1:10:40Dax Shepard?

  I did though.

• 1:10:41Speaker 01

But it's great for people who do.

• 1:10:42Dax Shepard?

So it was a very polarizing debate and people landed on all sides of it. Some people agreed with me, most people agreed with you.

• 1:10:48Speaker 01

What did they agree with you? What did they say?

• 1:10:50Dax Shepard?

Like I'd be, I would be way more embarrassed about undies falling out than tampons, which, you know, some people are like, fuck now, you know, there's much more. But a lot of people were like, yeah, I flow heavier than Monica. Like I gotta, I can't get away with.

• 1:11:06Speaker 01

I, I understand that. I've heard that as an explanation for why you should use the cup.

• 1:11:13Dax Shepard?

If you got a ton of.

• 1:11:17Speaker 01

  Just, yeah. So anyway.

• 1:11:19Dax Shepard?

I would see that as a sign of great health. Just my proclivities. I wonder how I would deal with having a menstrual cycle because my greatest days are like a day, and one just happened, or it's like, I go number two.

• 1:11:35Speaker 01

  Oh my God.

• 1:11:36Dax Shepard?

  And it's so robust.

• 1:11:38Speaker 01

  Of course.

• 1:11:38Dax Shepard?

Where I go, oh, I must not have been going the last couple of days. This is like, where'd all this come from? I love that.

• 1:11:45Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:11:45Dax Shepard?

  Or a big booger.

• 1:11:46Speaker 01

Okay. Okay. Listen, part of that's because then you feel better after, like you feel lighter, you feel, that doesn't happen on a period. It's not like you had a heavy flow and now you feel better.

• 1:11:58Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:59Speaker 01

But I will say, so thank you for bringing this up.

• 1:12:02Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:02Speaker 01

I do struggle mentally sometimes with a light flow. Like, I'm like, oh my, I'm done. Like, this is a sign of perimenopause. Like, I'm definitely in perimenopause. I'm probably like about to hit menopause.

• 1:12:16Dax Shepard?

The eggs are out, now the blood's out.

• 1:12:17Speaker 01

Exactly. And we're done now. Like, we're heading towards no period. But that's my hypochondriacal inclination and I don't want that.

• 1:12:27Dax Shepard?

So don't. Don't reinforce that line of thinking.

• 1:12:31Speaker 01

Last night, I thought maybe I had also a new disease.

• 1:12:36Dax Shepard?

  Oh, what new disease?

• 1:12:37Speaker 01

Um, because my foot, sometimes my foot has like, kind of this numb, like this side of my foot here.

• 1:12:47Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, the inside.

• 1:12:48Speaker 01

  The inside.

• 1:12:49Dax Shepard?

  Where your step is.

• 1:12:50Speaker 01

Has a numbness or like a weird tingly feeling, a weird feeling.

• 1:12:57Dax Shepard?

  Some kind of neuropathy.

• 1:12:58Speaker 01

Yeah. So yesterday I was starting to slip into, oh, I think it's.

• 1:13:04Dax Shepard?

  And you started Googling?

• 1:13:06Speaker 01

  I didn't Google.

• 1:13:07Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 1:13:07Speaker 01

But I was like, oh, I have ALS.

• 1:13:11Dax Shepard?

Oh, that you went straight to neurological disorder.

• 1:13:13Speaker 01

Yes, and, and then I, but then I immediately thought, if I think it, I'll get it. So I can't think it.

• 1:13:19Dax Shepard?

  That's right. Can't get psychosomatic.

• 1:13:21Speaker 01

But then that's, you know, that's its own thing.

• 1:13:25Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:25Speaker 01

So I put socks on and I ignored it.

• 1:13:28Dax Shepard?

Oh, great. That's a ding ding ding. I have entered, um, and I think this is a real period of life.

• 1:13:35Speaker 01

  Period ding ding ding.

• 1:13:36Dax Shepard?

Period. Pun intended. I have, and I've embarked on my slipper phase of my life.

• 1:13:41Speaker 01

  Whoa.

• 1:13:43Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I got a pair of like, I just like, I, I was recently feeling, there's all these times I want to run out to grab food uh, from the driveway or whatever, and I don't want to put on my tight shoes.

• 1:13:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:13:55Dax Shepard?

Seemed like I was time and I got a pair of really comfortable slippers. And I'm realizing, oh, this is a whole era of your life. Once you start walking around in slippers.

• 1:14:07Speaker 01

It's, oh, wow. I, I'm shook a little bit. Like it's a, it is a real indicator of.

• 1:14:15Dax Shepard?

It's an end to an era, maybe. Yeah.

• 1:14:18Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:14:19Dax Shepard?

  Like I'm prioritizing my comfort.

• 1:14:22Speaker 01

  Wow. I just.

• 1:14:24Dax Shepard?

And I hate bending over to put shoes on so I can just slide these on like it's definitely a harbinger of probably bad things to come, but also I kind of love it.

• 1:14:33Speaker 01

Well, I'm glad you love it.

• 1:14:34Dax Shepard?

I played volleyball in my slippers.

• 1:14:35Speaker 01

  What?

• 1:14:36Dax Shepard?

  It hurt my shoulder.

• 1:14:37Speaker 01

That, yeah, that's not good for volleyball.

• 1:14:39Dax Shepard?

No, but it was, I was in them and they're comfortable. Dad, can you practice? And then I'm just playing in my slippers.

• 1:14:47Speaker 01

Yeah, but slippers can be slippery.

• 1:14:51Dax Shepard?

  They are slippery.

• 1:14:52Speaker 01

So you definitely should not play volleyball, okay?

• 1:14:54Dax Shepard?

Okay. Um, and then additionally, as I said, my brother and my sister in law, and she's been in her slipper phase for seven or eight years.

• 1:15:02Speaker 01

  Oh, wow. Post-menopause.

• 1:15:05Dax Shepard?

Or middle of, I don't know, probably maybe related.

• 1:15:08Speaker 01

  Okay, yeah.

• 1:15:08Dax Shepard?

But I, I realized like, oh, she's really knows how to do it. The second we get home, like anything post lunch.

• 1:15:19Speaker 01

  Uh huh.

• 1:15:19Dax Shepard?

If she gets home, those slippers are on immediately.

• 1:15:22Speaker 01

  So she packs her slippers.

• 1:15:24Dax Shepard?

  She is in the.

• 1:15:25Speaker 01

  On trips.

• 1:15:26Dax Shepard?

Full center of her slipper phase. And so I'm finding I'm with her at like 5:30 in the evening. She has her slippers on, I have my shoes on and she's like, you should already have your slippers on. And I'm like, I know.

• 1:15:38Speaker 01

  She's teaching you.

• 1:15:39Dax Shepard?

I'm not fully like, I haven't learned the lifestyle all the way yet.

• 1:15:43Speaker 01

  The lifestyle.

• 1:15:44Dax Shepard?

I'm not putting them on early enough.

• 1:15:45Speaker 01

You know, the lifestyle is swinging.

• 1:15:47Dax Shepard?

You know, yeah, that's my lifestyle or move is I wear slippers. I, I may start wearing them in here on days that we don't have. How do you feel about that?

• 1:15:56Speaker 01

Okay, I have a question about slippers. Now, your house is tricky because even though you hate to admit it, it's large and made of tons of houses, actually.

• 1:16:04Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:16:04Speaker 01

Um, so you have to walk outside to get to places, to get like to your gym or to whatever.

• 1:16:10Dax Shepard?

  My garage.

• 1:16:11Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:16:12Dax Shepard?

  This studio.

• 1:16:12Speaker 01

This studio, exactly. So for me, if a slipper touches the outside.

• 1:16:19Dax Shepard?

  Mm hmm.

• 1:16:19Speaker 01

  It's thrown in the garbage.

• 1:16:21Dax Shepard?

  That makes sense.

• 1:16:22Speaker 01

It's a house slipper. It is meant for inside the house. Specifically so that you aren't dragging in stuff.

• 1:16:29Dax Shepard?

Yeah. And, and so you're outing me, but yes, I'll own it. We are a shoes on in the house family.

• 1:16:36Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:16:37Dax Shepard?

Some people will think that's disgusting.

• 1:16:38Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 1:16:39Dax Shepard?

But I, what's funny is I'm actually having a harder time wrapping my head around, I might want Nashville to be a shoes off house.

• 1:16:46Speaker 01

  Whoa.

• 1:16:48Dax Shepard?

Because I'm thinking there's going to be kids there endlessly, a yard to really play in and get dirty.

• 1:16:52Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:16:53Dax Shepard?

And do I want this whole brand new house to be filthy outdoor stuff? And then I'm like, we're so not a shoes off people. I can't even, like what that's challenging to my identity is way bigger than it should be.

• 1:17:06Speaker 01

Because it's like the white Christmas lights.

• 1:17:07Dax Shepard?

It is. It's like snooty and fancy.

• 1:17:10Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 1:17:10Dax Shepard?

And what do you take your shoes off? What are you talking about?

• 1:17:13Speaker 01

Yeah. Why do you need to fucking take your shoes off?

• 1:17:15Dax Shepard?

  Yes. Yeah.

• 1:17:16Speaker 01

  Yeah. I feel that I'm a, I'm a shoes on.

• 1:17:19Dax Shepard?

I want shoes off at Nashville and I'm afraid to declare that.

• 1:17:24Speaker 01

  Well, it's coinciding.

• 1:17:25Dax Shepard?

If you, when you, when you come over this summer and I say to you, hey, shoes by the door. I gotta figure out something cute to say.

• 1:17:32Speaker 01

You're gonna need some sort of cute phrase.

• 1:17:34Dax Shepard?

Don't let our shoes get lonely. Put your shoes with them. That's, would need some work. But what would be your first thought when you heard me say you can't wear your shoes in the house?

• 1:17:44Speaker 01

  If I hadn't, if we hadn't had this pre-talk.

• 1:17:46Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:47Speaker 01

  I would have laughed.

• 1:17:48Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:49Speaker 01

  At you, like.

• 1:17:50Dax Shepard?

  Who are you?

• 1:17:51Speaker 01

Yeah. Well, and then for me, that, that triggers my own stuff.

• 1:17:56Dax Shepard?

  He's changing. I don't know.

• 1:17:58Speaker 01

He's changing. He, I knew it. I knew that.

• 1:18:01Dax Shepard?

This money would infect him and, and destroy him.

• 1:18:05Speaker 01

  Southern life, like.

• 1:18:07Dax Shepard?

Oh, you would chalk it up to this is a southern thing.

• 1:18:09Speaker 01

Just like, oh, he has this extra house now.

• 1:18:12Dax Shepard?

  So white.

• 1:18:13Speaker 01

And, and he's extra white in the South and he's hoity-toity in the South. All the people that made me feel brown.

• 1:18:21Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:18:21Speaker 01

  Now he's like.

• 1:18:22Dax Shepard?

  He's one of them.

• 1:18:23Speaker 01

One of them. And I thought I knew him, but I don't even know him anymore. And then I would cry.

• 1:18:28Dax Shepard?

You're teasing and you're not, and it's really, it's true. People just assign whatever previous baggage they had to any situation. That's the explanation. Like you, you've got like a handful of explanations in your life, me, all people.

• 1:18:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:18:41Dax Shepard?

And then no matter what situation, you're like, oh, it's that thing that I already figured out when I was 12.

• 1:18:46Speaker 01

No, but not really. It's it depends on um who it is. Like if I go to a random house and they say shoes off, I don't think that. I'm not like, oh, hoity to I don't have that. I'm like, oh, they just don't want dirt. But with you, because I've I've been around you so many times where you were shoes in your bed. Okay. So the fact that well, I've seen it um that I I would be like, what?

• 1:19:15Dax Shepard?

Just to be clear on that.

• 1:19:18Speaker 01

  On top of your bed.

• 1:19:19Dax Shepard?

On top. I have on top of my bed and I very rarely, but there's occasions.

• 1:19:25Speaker 01

  I've seen.

• 1:19:25Dax Shepard?

I've got like my cleaner vans on and I'm like, I'm not gonna put my head at the bottom there at any point.

• 1:19:31Speaker 01

See, even this, even this, you're you're even getting self-conscious about this.

• 1:19:35Dax Shepard?

  Getting defensive.

• 1:19:35Speaker 01

And you used to not care at all.

• 1:19:37Dax Shepard?

  I'm changing. I'm becoming

• 1:19:39Speaker 01

  I guess we all

• 1:19:39Dax Shepard?

I'm becoming an old white man who wears slippers.

• 1:19:42Speaker 01

With you, I want you to wear slippers outside because it's keeping you still kind of dirty.

• 1:19:49Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, shit bird.

• 1:19:50Speaker 01

  You're not elite.

• 1:19:51Dax Shepard?

But I had a I have a friend who's also very famous. So anytime anyone who's really famous does something, I'm quick to associate it with them being so famous. I think that's really normal.

• 1:20:01Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:20:02Dax Shepard?

Like something's different and then you go, your brain just quickly catalogs what else is really different about them and make so that might well likely be the explanation. Like you you know, your friends are Orthodox Jews and you're at their house and they say, could you please?

• 1:20:21Dax Shepard?

Hang the towel and it's you know, just something that's different and you go, oh, I bet it's about them being Orthodox. I was like, anything you don't understand and then you know, there's this one thing different about them. You're like, oh, that's probably part of being Orthodox.

• 1:20:33Speaker 01

I guess that's true. I think it's a little different with religions because there are like rules and stuff.

• 1:20:38Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:20:38Speaker 01

Being famous, which is just you're still a person.

• 1:20:40Dax Shepard?

But there's also just cultural stuff like I would if something happened in your family house that was abnormal to me, I would probably go, it's probably because they're Indian.

• 1:20:49Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:20:50Dax Shepard?

I would. I would think it's from like something that your parents did, you know?

• 1:20:54Speaker 01

  Still you

• 1:20:55Dax Shepard?

It'd be a high probability guess.

• 1:20:58Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 1:20:59Dax Shepard?

I think that's different than racism.

• 1:21:02Speaker 01

  It's stereotypes.

• 1:21:04Dax Shepard?

Well, it is. I don't understand this custom. This custom wasn't around me where I grew up. And I know that he's from India. This custom must come from India.

• 1:21:14Speaker 01

Even though I grew up in the United States.

• 1:21:17Dax Shepard?

No, this is not my, not your house. I would never be in your

• 1:21:21Speaker 01

  My parents' house.

• 1:21:22Dax Shepard?

  Your parents' house.

• 1:21:22Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:21:23Dax Shepard?

And your dad only ate toast out of a cereal bowl. Let's say.

• 1:21:28Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:21:29Dax Shepard?

Hang on. So nobody eats toast out of a cereal bowl.

• 1:21:32Speaker 01

  That must be Indian.

• 1:21:34Dax Shepard?

  Explain it.

• 1:21:35Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:21:35Dax Shepard?

I bet in India, they eat their toast in a cereal bowl. Do you think that would be like the highest probability guess?

• 1:21:42Speaker 01

But this is what I am actively against.

• 1:21:46Dax Shepard?

  Fighting this. I know.

• 1:21:47Speaker 01

Yeah, that you just make, not you, the royal you, but you, you're calling yourself out for this.

• 1:21:52Dax Shepard?

And now the TV show you, which you also talk a lot about now.

• 1:21:57Speaker 01

That anything a little different is associated with being a different type of, a different ethnicity is bad.

• 1:22:05Dax Shepard?

Anything. So if I go to a nuclear physicist's house and there's something different, I go, I bet these, this is something the engineer, I figure out the thing that I don't share in common with them. And I explain the other thing I don't share in common with them as the explanation.

• 1:22:20Speaker 01

Okay, but how come with, if my dad is eating toast out of a cereal bowl, you're not saying, oh, it's because he's an engineer.

• 1:22:27Dax Shepard?

Okay, so I might, but I'm going probabilistically. I'm first going, well, he's from a totally different country. There's 23 years of his life in a country that I don't know any of the customs on. And if, and if I said, oh, Ashok, I notice you're eating your toast out of a cereal bowl. That's unique. Is that an Indian thing? And he would go, no. Then I would go, okay, what's the next thing I know is he and I don't have any overlap on.

• 1:22:53Speaker 01

What I would love is, let me coach you.

• 1:22:57Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:22:57Speaker 01

Okay. First of all, let's, let's never say. Is that an Indian thing?

• 1:23:02Dax Shepard?

You think your dad wouldn't like that?

• 1:23:04Speaker 01

  I don't like it.

• 1:23:05Dax Shepard?

  I know you don't.

• 1:23:06Speaker 01

And I don't like it on behalf of him.

• 1:23:07Dax Shepard?

I know, but and I would never say to you is that an Indian thing?

• 1:23:10Speaker 01

I don't want you to say it to him. If I overheard that, you'd.

• 1:23:15Dax Shepard?

I'd be in trouble. I know, I know.

• 1:23:16Speaker 01

  You'd get this at me.

• 1:23:17Dax Shepard?

I would, I would, I know that and you're, and I know that would happen and I wouldn't do it in front of you. Is it possible, though, that your dad wouldn't care about that? And, and that, um, Par, uh, Parry wouldn't care about that?

• 1:23:30Speaker 01

It's about the very specific phrasing. I guess you could say, first of all, my dad doesn't care about anything. So, yes, you could, you could say whatever the fuck you wanted to him.

• 1:23:40Dax Shepard?

  He's not precious about.

• 1:23:41Speaker 01

Anything to, uh, maybe detriment. But I think if you were gonna say it in a way that I would feel comfortable.

• 1:23:51Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:51Speaker 01

  Did you grow up eating?

• 1:23:52Dax Shepard?

Eating your toast in a cereal bowl.

• 1:23:54Speaker 01

Your toast in a cereal bowl. I've never seen that before.

• 1:23:56Dax Shepard?

And so, yeah, I would have phrased it right. Like, that would be the correct way to phrase it. But all the other stuff really just happened because it's very logical.

• 1:24:05Speaker 01

It bums me out. Maybe because I'm in my ludial phase, but.

• 1:24:09Dax Shepard?

Well, I understand why it bums you up because that's an inane example of it. And then there's really bad examples of it.

• 1:24:16Speaker 01

Okay, hold on. It's inane to you. It's not inane to me, who's been othered by that my whole life.

• 1:24:20Dax Shepard?

  It's not inane to you.

• 1:24:22Speaker 01

  So let me.

• 1:24:22Dax Shepard?

I think it might be inane to your dad, is my hunch.

• 1:24:24Speaker 01

We can't use him. He is, he is not a good, he is not a good measure.

• 1:24:29Dax Shepard?

  He's not a good man.

• 1:24:30Speaker 01

Now, he's a too good of a man. He's too good, really. Now, how about this? If I, if I was at your house.

• 1:24:41Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:41Speaker 01

And you, um, ate your steak with your hand. You like picked up your steak.

• 1:24:48Dax Shepard?

Like it were a potato chip.

• 1:24:49Speaker 01

Yeah, exactly. No, like more like a hamburger. Like, you picked up the steak with two hands and bit into it and ate it.

• 1:24:55Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:56Speaker 01

And I, I'd be like, whoa, I've never seen that. Um, is that something that happens in trailer parks?

• 1:25:01Dax Shepard?

Well, first of all, I don't mind that question.

• 1:25:05Speaker 01

Okay, what if I asked Aaron?

• 1:25:07Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, he wouldn't mind either.

• 1:25:09Speaker 01

You would mind if I saw Aaron do something?

• 1:25:12Dax Shepard?

If you said that to Aaron.

• 1:25:13Speaker 01

And I said, oh, is that like a trailer park thing?

• 1:25:16Dax Shepard?

Yes, true. Point, point received, but would you agree? Trailer park is never used in a positive way. It's only a burn. And, and you have a gut feeling of any questions about India are implicitly negative. Whereas I don't associate, is that an Indian thing? Isn't, is that a trailer park thing? To me, there is a, there's a hierarchy of judgment in, is that a trailer park thing? Or is that an Indian thing? Indian things is like a cultural, national thing.

• 1:25:50Speaker 01

Because you, that you know, people who were judged for living in trailer parks. I don't.

• 1:25:55Dax Shepard?

Right. I know people are very insecure about being, yeah, from a trailer park.

• 1:25:59Speaker 01

  It's the same thing.

• 1:26:00Dax Shepard?

But I think for you it is because you're insecure about that. Rightly so. But I don't think your dad is like, I don't think it's an insecurity of your dad's. To talk about stuff that was normal in India and different here.

• 1:26:15Speaker 01

I know, but you're using him as such, you're.

• 1:26:18Dax Shepard?

I'm hanging a lot on him, but I would also hang a lot on Pari.

• 1:26:20Speaker 01

I wouldn't feel comfortable with you being that open with Pari. Like, is that an Indian thing? We don't know him well enough. I don't know his whole relationship.

• 1:26:30Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:26:31Speaker 01

To being Indian, obviously he likes talking about it and he's comfortable with it. He's comfortable with it, but it's, these things are complicated.

• 1:26:37Dax Shepard?

They are complicated, but it does start with what is your own feeling about the topic being brought up?

• 1:26:43Speaker 01

It should be the person who's experienced it that gets to dictate it.

• 1:26:46Dax Shepard?

Absolutely. Which is why I am conceding and saying, I wouldn't ever ask you that.

• 1:26:51Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 1:26:53Dax Shepard?

And I am making a prediction of how I think your dad would take it, which maybe is right or wrong.

• 1:26:58Speaker 01

So how do you think Aaron would take it?

• 1:27:00Dax Shepard?

  I don't think he'd mind.

• 1:27:01Speaker 01

  Okay, but you would mind.

• 1:27:03Dax Shepard?

I would be nervous, well, not around you.

• 1:27:06Speaker 01

  No, if I said it.

• 1:27:08Dax Shepard?

Yeah, if you said it, we're fine. Oh. Because Aaron knows you.

• 1:27:12Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:27:12Dax Shepard?

And he knows you want the best for him and you're, you don't think poorly of him or that he's a lowlife.

• 1:27:16Speaker 01

No. Um, but wouldn't you be like, what the fuck is she doing? You would and you should me having knowing your background, knowing his background, knowing that those things have been used against him. It would be so insensitive for me to be like, hey, is that a trailer park thing? I don't under just because I don't understand it. And that's the different thing about us.

• 1:27:44Dax Shepard?

For sure. And also there are some stuff you can say about trailer parks. I mean, there's a reality in the world. As I've said before, like the average level of intoxication on a weekday afternoon in Aaron's trailer park was much different than the average intoxication rate elsewhere.

• 1:28:08Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:28:09Dax Shepard?

You know, that is also a reality of it. So I think you're kind of, I think you're, what you're trying to do is be honest about the world you live in and not hurt people's feelings. And sometimes those things are against one another, if that makes sense.

• 1:28:25Speaker 01

If you're curious, you can ask it in a way that's not implying that it's something so like if I saw him eat a steak with two hands.

• 1:28:36Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:28:37Speaker 01

Maybe I'd be like, actually, I mean, I know me, I would just be like, well, that's how he eats it.

• 1:28:43Dax Shepard?

He's a caveman, look at him.

• 1:28:44Speaker 01

  No.

• 1:28:45Dax Shepard?

  Look at this guy go.

• 1:28:45Speaker 01

When you do grow up as a minority, everything's different. Like, so you don't have the luxury of being like, oh, that must be different because of this. Or that might be, it's like, yeah, it's all different.

• 1:29:02Dax Shepard?

Everything's different. No, let me ask you this, if you walked into like, you had had your experience of living with other girls a lot as roommates. And I even went to your old apartment where you had a bunch of female roommates. And like, you guys would like cook dinners together sometimes. And there's this all kinds of stuff that's kind of predictable in that scenario.

• 1:29:23Speaker 01

  Oh, sure. Yeah.

• 1:29:24Dax Shepard?

And I'm sure if you walked into a, an apartment that four dudes lived in.

• 1:29:28Speaker 01

  Uh huh.

• 1:29:29Dax Shepard?

And you're like, oh, wow. X, Y, and Z is different. There's a bong on the table. There's dishes in the sink. There's a Your brain would logically and rightly so, I think, go, well, this is a much different scenario when you hear what's different. And it would be right for you to go like, oh yeah, this is boys.

• 1:29:49Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:29:49Dax Shepard?

Right? Like, there's an explanation for it. And I think you would be right and logical to start with what's the biggest difference between you and your three roommates and these four people? Well, this is four dudes and that's for.

• 1:30:03Speaker 01

But the difference is that's correct.

• 1:30:06Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 1:30:07Speaker 01

The, the toast out of the bowl and the eating the steak with two hands are not because of what you're.

• 1:30:14Dax Shepard?

  We don't know, though.

• 1:30:14Speaker 01

Well, I do know that that's not an Indian tradition.

• 1:30:17Dax Shepard?

Well, I know, because it was made up. He doesn't do it.

• 1:30:19Speaker 01

Yeah. Yeah. Neither is eating steak with two hands. But the whole point is like, wait, because what you're bringing up is something that you really don't under. You're like, oh, that's new. Seeing a bong in a, basically a frat house, isn't new. I've seen.

• 1:30:33Dax Shepard?

Right. But if it's just trashed inside and you're trying to figure out why these people live in a trash place and you and your friends don't, I think it would be right of you, if your life depended on it, to make a prediction of why it's different, to assume it's because they're boys and you're girls.

• 1:30:48Speaker 01

I think if you came into my parents' house and they had a picture of, um, of Krishna on the wall.

• 1:30:57Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:30:58Speaker 01

I think you could probably indefinitely deduce that that's because they're Indian.

• 1:31:05Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:31:06Speaker 01

I don't think you can see like, a bouncy ball in water on the counter and say, oh, that must be Indian too.

• 1:31:15Dax Shepard?

For sure. I think what, what, both things are true and, and absolutely legitimate is, A, you should treat people as they're an individual and the thing that you're experiencing could be their own individual idiosyncraticness. That would be the fairest way to treat everyone. And that's valid and I agree. Also, groups of people have patterns. Also a reality.

• 1:31:40Speaker 01

They do. But for the most part, we know those already. Like, we've been taught those and told those already. So like, yes, if my mom is making curry.

• 1:31:51Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:31:52Speaker 01

Yeah, you could say to yourself, like, like, it would be reasonable to think, yeah, that's because she's Indian and she grew up eating curry and that's an Indian dish. All of that makes sense. And I'm, and those are stereotypes, so that's tricky, but it's real. That's real.

• 1:32:07Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, it's just, yeah.

• 1:32:08Speaker 01

That's normal. I'm, I'm fine with that. I'm just not fine with arbitrary, that's different, so it must be because of.

• 1:32:17Dax Shepard?

I understand your objection to that.

• 1:32:19Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:32:19Dax Shepard?

But do you also agree that that might be the highest probability explanation? Just across the board.

• 1:32:29Speaker 01

  No, I don't.

• 1:32:30Dax Shepard?

Like, I had to be friends with lots of Jewish people before it went from, I noticed one friend had this thing hanging in his door frame and he touched it every time he went in his house.

• 1:32:41Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:32:41Dax Shepard?

At first, that was just, oh, John has a thing he's hung up that he touched.

• 1:32:45Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 1:32:45Dax Shepard?

Then four other Jewish friends along the way who have it. And then I go like, oh yeah, that's a Jewish thing.

• 1:32:52Speaker 01

Yes. So I think that's the right train of thought. You, you see it and you assume that it's actually individual to the person.

• 1:33:01Dax Shepard?

  John's thing.

• 1:33:01Speaker 01

Yes. And then over time, you see a pattern, then over time, you're like, oh, this is, this is cultural.

• 1:33:08Dax Shepard?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:33:09Speaker 01

But that's the correct order, not the other way around.

• 1:33:11Dax Shepard?

Hmm, mm-hmm. Yeah, sometimes life's moving really fast and you got like one stab at it.

• 1:33:19Speaker 01

  No, you don't.

• 1:33:19Dax Shepard?

And you kind of go the, the highest probability.

• 1:33:23Speaker 01

  No, you don't. Okay.

• 1:33:26Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:33:26Dax Shepard?

  The show, I love you.

• 1:33:28Speaker 01

  I love you, Dad.

• 1:33:28Dax Shepard?

And everything you do, I love. And if I saw something I didn't understand, I would still love it. I just would be curious if that was.

• 1:33:37Dax Shepard?

His own unique invention or that's like he's fourth generation of toast in a bowl?

• 1:33:42Speaker 01

Well, look, here's an interesting. So a lot of Indians do, they eat with their hands.

• 1:33:48Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:33:49Speaker 01

So they eat like rice with their hands.

• 1:33:51Dax Shepard?

Mm hmm. And they got the naan going too. They're scooping with some bread. They get their fingers in there?

• 1:33:57Speaker 01

Yeah, depending. Sometimes there's naan, there's, um, but sometimes not like they're, they're eating with their hands. That's a very common way to eat in India. Um, my grandparents did that. That's how they ate.

• 1:34:11Dax Shepard?

  Well, they did.

• 1:34:12Speaker 01

Yes. And that, and my dad too, although I haven't seen that in years.

• 1:34:17Dax Shepard?

Not really quick. So when you were over there and you notice, oh, grandma and grandpa eat with their hands.

• 1:34:21Speaker 01

  Mm hmm.

• 1:34:22Dax Shepard?

Were you like grandma and grandpa are interesting or were you like, oh, it's gotta be an Indian thing?

• 1:34:26Speaker 01

I mean, I was so little. There's no way for me to know that. So anyway, I guess I would hope that you would have seen it a couple of times before you assumed it.

• 1:34:36Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:34:36Speaker 01

But that's, this is an interesting one because it's true, you know, it's real. That's a cultural difference.

• 1:34:41Dax Shepard?

Yeah, that's right. And that's what you're trying to

• 1:34:47Dax Shepard?

beat out in your head and figure out what, you know, I think your impulses are like explain stuff. I mean, I think, well, let's start with like things we agree on. Everyone's impulse is making sense of reality around them.

• 1:34:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:34:58Dax Shepard?

Like that's just your number one

• 1:34:59Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:35:00Dax Shepard?

job from the second you wake up. It's like, oh, I came in this room and this is going on. Why is this going on? I need that, you know?

• 1:35:06Speaker 01

I think approaching it with like true curiosity that doesn't have any judgment or otherness around it. Like I do think phrasing it as, did you grow up eating toast in a bowl?

• 1:35:18Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:35:18Speaker 01

Or did you grow up eating with your hands is different than is that a group, insert group thing?

• 1:35:26Dax Shepard?

  Uh, yeah.

• 1:35:28Speaker 01

For anyone who wants to practice.

• 1:35:30Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:35:31Speaker 01

It's a lot. Look, life is a lot of phrasing.

• 1:35:35Dax Shepard?

It's a lot of judgment calls. It's a lot of how you phrase things.

• 1:35:38Speaker 01

Yes, it makes a huge difference.

• 1:35:39Dax Shepard?

Yeah, and I'm just trying to be honest about acknowledging what the real process is in my head. Like, I'm trying to be honest about the fact that when I see something that I've never seen before, my one hundredth of a second, right? Like, I'm not even, the frontal lobe's not even involved. It went, huh, that's different. What could explain it? What's the other thing I know about us that's different? Maybe that's the explanation. That is like, from almost the moment I see it, that math happens.

• 1:36:12Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:36:12Dax Shepard?

And then the frontal lobe goes, well, is that a stereotype? Is that offensive? Is that this? Is it that? And then you hope to land with a high percentage that you were on the right side of it.

• 1:36:21Speaker 01

Hopefully, you just keep your mouth shut until the second part of your brain has done the other thing.

• 1:36:26Dax Shepard?

That's the goal. The space between your emotions and your actions.

• 1:36:30Speaker 01

We can't control the initial thought.

• 1:36:32Dax Shepard?

That's all I'm trying to cop to.

• 1:36:34Speaker 01

I have no, I have no, um, there's nothing we can do about our initial thoughts.

• 1:36:40Dax Shepard?

Okay, great. I get a little scared that I even, like, my initial thoughts are offensive and then I'm kind of just a bad. Like, you think I'm a bad person?

• 1:36:47Speaker 01

  We all do this.

• 1:36:48Dax Shepard?

I commit to, like, working through all the other steps.

• 1:36:51Speaker 01

Yeah, that's all that's being asked in any of these, like, racism or stereotypes or any of these things. Like, you can't help your initial thought. You have it, and then you think, is that right?

• 1:37:04Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:37:05Speaker 01

And that's how you get to having, I think, those thoughts less over time.

• 1:37:10Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:37:11Speaker 01

  Anyway.

• 1:37:12Dax Shepard?

I think when you and I talk about race openly, it's wonderful.

• 1:37:15Speaker 01

  Me too.

• 1:37:16Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:37:17Speaker 01

  We can, because there's trust.

• 1:37:18Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:37:19Speaker 01

Um, and I, and I think, hopefully, it's good for people to hear because. It's hard to find someone you trust to talk about race with because there's a lot of explosive.

• 1:37:32Dax Shepard?

It also, again, it's so much of where you come from. It's like Joy grew up with her people. And like, so she loves to talk about it.

• 1:37:44Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:37:45Dax Shepard?

She'll, she's happy to engage in it with pretty much anyone, whether or not she's even earned that.

• 1:37:49Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:37:50Dax Shepard?

And it's simply, so what you'd be inclined to think is like, there's something predictable about being a minority in this country. Well, no, there's something predictable if you're a minority in this country and you're surrounded by the hegemonic group.

• 1:38:02Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:38:02Dax Shepard?

And there's something to be said if you, you know.

• 1:38:04Speaker 01

Yeah, but also she, if she was talking to certain people. I mean, she, the way Joy talks about it, she does, she's with you, there's like fun and it's funny and stuff.

• 1:38:15Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:38:15Speaker 01

But she can get very serious about.

• 1:38:17Dax Shepard?

Oh, she's dead serious about the inequity.

• 1:38:20Speaker 01

Exactly. And she is not going to be afraid.

• 1:38:23Dax Shepard?

She likes to because she's so skilled.

• 1:38:25Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 1:38:26Dax Shepard?

Pointing these things out. But yeah, she's, but she's never seemingly. She's never triggered in some inferiority way.

• 1:38:34Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:38:35Dax Shepard?

She's like, oh, you think that that's broken and I can't wait to, you know, there's like, she doesn't seem seem to.

• 1:38:44Speaker 01

  But I mean.

• 1:38:45Dax Shepard?

But she got to grow up with her people.

• 1:38:46Speaker 01

She did, but she's also lived a life, she went to an Ivy League school. She lived a life where she was around.

• 1:38:52Dax Shepard?

  She did a ball.

• 1:38:53Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:38:54Dax Shepard?

  She did boarding school.

• 1:38:55Speaker 01

  I'm sure, I'm sure there's elements.

• 1:38:57Dax Shepard?

  There's some complication for sure.

• 1:38:59Speaker 01

Yeah. I don't think you can be a minority in this country and not have some level of like.

It is just fun to think about what your homeostasis would be if you grew up with all Indians in the neighborhood. And what would my homeostasis be like if I was the only white person in all Indians or all black people or whatever? It's just, I think it proves the point that we were always saying, which is like, you're not you, you're a product of.

• 1:39:26Speaker 01

  So many things.

• 1:39:27Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:28Speaker 01

  Yes, I agree.

• 1:39:30Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:39:30Speaker 01

  But real quick.

• 1:39:32Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:33Speaker 01

  Speaking of cultures.

• 1:39:34Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:35Speaker 01

Callie, Max and I went to Dan Tana's. Which is a rest, an institutional restaurant in Los Angeles.

• 1:39:43Dax Shepard?

Which I've talked about a bunch on here, because I like to go with Nate.

• 1:39:46Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:39:47Dax Shepard?

  And what did you think?

• 1:39:48Speaker 01

  I loved it.

• 1:39:49Dax Shepard?

  You did?

• 1:39:49Speaker 01

  Yeah, I loved it.

• 1:39:50Dax Shepard?

Okay, I mean, I need to know more, because what I like about it, as I've told you, is it is time traveling.

• 1:39:56Speaker 01

It is. It's old school Italian. It has mob energy.

• 1:40:00Dax Shepard?

  It's super Hollywood eighties.

• 1:40:03Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:40:03Dax Shepard?

I mean, the steaks are named after famous actors. You got the, the Debney steak, you got the.

• 1:40:11Speaker 01

  I thought, oh, I didn't notice that.

• 1:40:13Dax Shepard?

Did you not notice all the, all the, um.

• 1:40:15Speaker 01

  Didn't look at the meats.

• 1:40:17Dax Shepard?

  What ones?

• 1:40:18Speaker 01

I didn't look at the meats.

• 1:40:19Dax Shepard?

  Oh, you didn't?

• 1:40:20Speaker 01

No, because it's an Italian place. I'm getting pasta.

• 1:40:22Dax Shepard?

They're kind of known for their, uh, what's the thing that people are against eating a cow?

• 1:40:27Speaker 01

  Veal.

• 1:40:27Dax Shepard?

Veal. And there's like eight or 10 veals on the menu, but all with different movie stars' names. And famously, James Woods was behind us eating the James Woods.

• 1:40:38Speaker 01

That's, yeah, that's right. That was, I thought that was a Musso and Frank.

• 1:40:40Dax Shepard?

  No, that was Dan Tana's.

• 1:40:42Speaker 01

  Oh, fun.

• 1:40:42Dax Shepard?

  But you liked it.

• 1:40:43Speaker 01

  I loved it.

• 1:40:44Dax Shepard?

Were there any 85 year old men with 21 year old women?

• 1:40:48Speaker 01

  Oh, shoot.

• 1:40:49Dax Shepard?

Because that's still thriving there, which is so fascinating to see.

• 1:40:53Speaker 01

I didn't notice, but at some point in the night, um, a, a group came in that was dressed like to the nines looking mob, kind of mob bossy. And then our server, who obviously had been sort of like a lifetime server there, he was giving us the intel that they come at like nine or between nine and 10 every night, and they order the same thing. And they get fettuccine for the table.

• 1:41:19Dax Shepard?

  I love it.

• 1:41:19Speaker 01

I know. It was really, really fun.

• 1:41:22Dax Shepard?

Did you have a cool cocktail? Because that bar.

• 1:41:24Speaker 01

  I had a martini.

• 1:41:25Dax Shepard?

Might be the coolest bar in all of LA. I mean, more shit has happened at that bar than probably any other bar in LA.

• 1:41:31Speaker 01

It was so fun. And, um, one bad thing happened. He'll probably be mad at me for sharing this because it was a blunder.

• 1:41:39Dax Shepard?

  Okay, thigh guy?

• 1:41:41Speaker 01

Yeah, thigh guy Max. He's kind of like.

• 1:41:45Speaker 01

You, I think in, in a, I'm worried things are gonna run out.

• 1:41:50Dax Shepard?

  Oh, sure, sure.

• 1:41:51Speaker 01

So I guess last time they got a Caesar.

• 1:41:56Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 1:41:57Speaker 01

And he was like, this is not enough. This is not enough Caesar.

• 1:42:02Dax Shepard?

Scary. Yeah, I can feel it.

• 1:42:04Speaker 01

So for his entree, he got double Caesar salad.

• 1:42:07Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:42:09Speaker 01

And Callie and I got individual Caesars as our starters.

• 1:42:12Dax Shepard?

  Mm hmm.

• 1:42:12Speaker 01

So they bring our starters and I look at this and I think Max is getting two of these.

• 1:42:20Dax Shepard?

  Cause it was huge.

• 1:42:21Speaker 01

It was huge. And then he had trapped himself because he was like, it is that, that wasn't the size of it last time. And the Caesar that arrived was so.

• 1:42:36Dax Shepard?

It was like a large pizza?

• 1:42:37Speaker 01

It was enormous and piled up so high. And he couldn't really wait for his, like, he was like too hungry. So we had some of mine and some of Callie's before his enormous Caesar arrived.

• 1:42:51Dax Shepard?

  Oh, wow.

• 1:42:53Speaker 01

  And then.

• 1:42:54Dax Shepard?

He really painted himself into a corner.

• 1:42:56Speaker 01

Cause then he was like, I, I have to eat it. Like I made this crazy mistake.

• 1:43:01Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:43:01Speaker 01

And it looks crazy if I don't, like, the people are gonna be pissed.

• 1:43:04Dax Shepard?

No, I love that we think that, as if they're thinking at all about what we do.

• 1:43:08Speaker 01

Then our server came, because he said, is this the size it was? And he said, yeah, that's always been the size. Yeah, the guy in the back was like, two?

• 1:43:17Dax Shepard?

  Okay, so they are.

• 1:43:18Speaker 01

Yeah, they're judging. Anyway, he ate pretty much all of it. He had to leave a little bit. But when you factor in the fact that he had some of mine and Callie's, he had more than two Caesars.

• 1:43:29Dax Shepard?

And what do you have for an entree?

• 1:43:31Speaker 01

  That was his entree.

• 1:43:32Dax Shepard?

  He didn't go steak either?

• 1:43:33Speaker 01

He, no, he didn't. We got some appetizers, but.

• 1:43:36Dax Shepard?

Okay. I'm so glad. When was this? Last night?

• 1:43:40Speaker 01

  Oh, it was.

• 1:43:41Dax Shepard?

  Couple of months ago?

• 1:43:42Speaker 01

  It was Sunday.

• 1:43:43Dax Shepard?

  It was Sunday.

• 1:43:44Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:43:44Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:43:45Speaker 01

  It was really fun.

• 1:43:46Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, that's a fun place.

• 1:43:48Speaker 01

I need to be better at. Not like, I want to go back tonight.

• 1:43:55Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:43:55Speaker 01

And then I want to go back in five more days. Like, I've been doing that with Sunset Tower. I've been going a little, like, a lot.

• 1:44:01Dax Shepard?

  Okay, yeah.

• 1:44:02Speaker 01

And I ordered, I order an interesting martini. I order one with a lemon twist and an orange twist. Unconventional, I invented it.

• 1:44:10Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:44:11Speaker 01

  And so-

• 1:44:11Dax Shepard?

  Never been done.

• 1:44:12Speaker 01

So when I went last time and I ordered that, he was like, "Oh, yeah, I, I remember you."

• 1:44:18Dax Shepard?

  Oh, now he's got you.

• 1:44:19Speaker 01

Yeah, and he was like, "When, yeah, when were you here?" Like, two weeks ago? And I was like, "Yeah." But really, it was like-

• 1:44:26Dax Shepard?

  Five days ago?

• 1:44:27Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:44:27Dax Shepard?

  Ah.

• 1:44:28Speaker 01

  I had to lie.

• 1:44:30Dax Shepard?

See, he lies. Is he a suitor now? Sounds like he's a suitor.

• 1:44:34Speaker 01

No, he's not, he's not. He was a nice man, but no. Anywho, um, but I guess that's it. I do have a maybe, an update. I haven't decided if I'm gonna share it, so that's TBD. Keep listening.

• 1:44:47Dax Shepard?

  Sure, sure.

• 1:44:49Speaker 01

All right, let's do some facts.

• 1:44:50Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:44:53Speaker 03

Stay tuned for more Armchair Expert, if you dare.

• 1:45:05Speaker 01

Okay, facts for Kristen. It's so weird that her name's Kristen. Is it weird for you?

• 1:45:12Dax Shepard?

Well, because it's spelled the way it is? There's a lot of leeway in the way where people are spelling Kristen.

• 1:45:18Speaker 01

I don't think of her as Kristen because of the way it's spelled.

• 1:45:22Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 1:45:22Speaker 01

But then when we were saying her name, I was like, "Oh, yeah."

• 1:45:25Dax Shepard?

  It is actually-

• 1:45:26Speaker 01

  This is a dumb story.

• 1:45:27Dax Shepard?

No, it's a good one. But Kristen, C-R-I-S-T-

• 1:45:30Speaker 05

I know what you mean. I think the same exact thing.

• 1:45:32Speaker 01

  Thanks.

• 1:45:33Speaker 05

I, I didn't realize it was even pronounced Kristen.

• 1:45:35Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:45:35Dax Shepard?

Yeah, C-R-I-S-T-I-N. Now, this goes, this, uh, my ex-girlfriend, Bree, too. She had a very novel spelling of Bree.

• 1:45:44Speaker 01

  Yeah, how'd she spell it?

• 1:45:45Dax Shepard?

  B-R, still does. B-R-I-E-G-H.

• 1:45:48Speaker 01

  B-R-I-E-G-H, yeah.

• 1:45:50Dax Shepard?

Everyone gets to, you know, do it however they like.

• 1:45:52Speaker 01

Parents get, like, funky when they're making spellings up.

• 1:45:55Dax Shepard?

I know. Yeah, it's an interesting impulse. It's like, I'm gonna give them a name that a lot of people have, but I'm gonna spell it uniquely.

• 1:46:04Speaker 01

Yeah, you know what's funny? Um, you, well, Callie has that a little bit. She always has to say Callie with a K.

• 1:46:10Dax Shepard?

  And an I?

• 1:46:12Speaker 01

  Well, so-

• 1:46:13Dax Shepard?

  Uh-oh.

• 1:46:13Speaker 01

  So now's-

• 1:46:14Dax Shepard?

That was a great time to tell you.

• 1:46:17Speaker 01

  Actually, I think it-

• 1:46:18Dax Shepard?

I am stressed every time I text you about Callie. I was, I'm like, is it KH? Is it KH?

• 1:46:24Speaker 01

  See, yeah, it's a, like, it's a hard name.

• 1:46:26Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:46:27Speaker 01

I actually find it very endearing because I think it has to do with your dyslexia.

• 1:46:30Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:46:31Speaker 01

Um, but, because you always spell it K A L I and you're so close.

• 1:46:37Dax Shepard?

  Oh, what do I need?

• 1:46:38Speaker 01

  It's K A L I E.

• 1:46:40Dax Shepard?

  Oh, easy, I can-

• 1:46:41Speaker 01

But I always think it's funny because you, you do it and then I'll respond back with her name, kind of on purpose.

• 1:46:49Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:46:50Speaker 01

  Spelled correctly.

• 1:46:50Dax Shepard?

  Yes, try gently tell me.

• 1:46:52Speaker 01

Yeah, like, oh, I think one day he'll see that he's been doing that wrong and then, um-

• 1:46:55Dax Shepard?

Yes, I was with Callie. Instead of saying I was with her.

• 1:46:58Speaker 01

  Yeah, Callie said this.

• 1:47:00Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:47:00Speaker 01

Um, and then, and then you haven't noticed that. But, um, so I guess now the cat's out of the-

• 1:47:07Dax Shepard?

  I think I noticed it and then I don't, I remember it.

• 1:47:10Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's fair.

• 1:47:11Dax Shepard?

Like, a month later when I want to text about Callie.

• 1:47:14Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:47:14Dax Shepard?

I don't try to go back and find it.

• 1:47:17Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:47:17Dax Shepard?

Okay, I think this will be the learning moment where I get it. I E, I can handle that. I have this same issue with Seth's wife, Claire. Every time I seem to write Claire, I've picked the wrong one.

• 1:47:29Speaker 01

  How does she?

• 1:47:30Dax Shepard?

  Well, because you could go C L A I R or C L A R E.

• 1:47:35Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:47:37Dax Shepard?

And it's one of those two and I generally get it wrong.

• 1:47:40Speaker 01

  C L A R E is unconventional.

• 1:47:43Speaker 05

  That's hers.

• 1:47:44Speaker 01

That's hers. Okay, so she's unconventional.

• 1:47:47Dax Shepard?

Yeah, and Seth will, he doesn't say, he doesn't do what you do. He's even more direct. He's like, it is, like, he corrects me.

• 1:47:55Speaker 01

He gets upset, do you think?

• 1:47:57Dax Shepard?

  I just think he's-

• 1:47:57Speaker 01

Do you think it gets defensive?

• 1:47:58Dax Shepard?

No, I think he's a very, like, respectful integrity person. And he, he wants to correct you if you're not spelling his wife's name right.

• 1:48:07Speaker 01

Wow, okay. Two sides of the two different coins, I guess. Because I feel like I'm being respectful by not telling you because I don't want to hurt your feelings.

• 1:48:18Dax Shepard?

I think they're both valid. They're valid points of view.

• 1:48:22Speaker 01

Okay, what is interesting about the way people spell names is sometimes the spelling does make me like the name in a way that I didn't previously like it.

• 1:48:31Dax Shepard?

  Sure.

• 1:48:32Speaker 01

In fact, Claire being one. I really like the spelling C L A R E.

• 1:48:36Dax Shepard?

  That changes it for you.

• 1:48:37Speaker 01

  Now I love it.

• 1:48:38Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Maybe you'll name your daughter Claire.

• 1:48:41Speaker 05

It's like, we, we spell Calvin weird.

• 1:48:44Speaker 01

  How do you spell it?

• 1:48:46Speaker 05

  C A L V I G H N?

• 1:48:49Dax Shepard?

  No, you don't. That's a lie.

• 1:48:51Speaker 01

  No!

• 1:48:52Dax Shepard?

  Robin is, his lies.

• 1:48:55Speaker 01

He tells so many lies. And I've been, and when I'm watching you, there's so many lies to juggle.

• 1:49:00Dax Shepard?

Oh, so yours is swimming in deception.

• 1:49:02Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:49:03Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:49:04Speaker 01

Uh, speaking of, when I asked if he's protective, Seth, um, the guy in you, he's so protective that he has to murder.

• 1:49:12Dax Shepard?

  Ah, too protective.

• 1:49:14Speaker 01

Yeah, I could see you like sliding down that scale a little bit.

• 1:49:18Dax Shepard?

  Absolutely, yeah, yeah.

• 1:49:19Speaker 01

I kinda want you to watch it to see if you kinda can relate.

• 1:49:22Dax Shepard?

We had an expert, he's coming up, and um, it's really fucked up the whole way I process the world and it's, I'm frustrated by it, and I know it's the right thing to do. But a guy, uh, for, uh, we're having an expert on about rage addiction.

• 1:49:37Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:49:38Dax Shepard?

And once it's, once it's fully framed for you, what's going on in your head, and the science behind it, it's a bummer. Cause I do like the right, there's some level of vigilanteism I like.

• 1:49:52Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:49:53Dax Shepard?

  You know?

• 1:49:54Speaker 01

Look, we all do. We all love the story of like Robin Hood a little bit.

• 1:49:59Dax Shepard?

  Uh-huh.

• 1:50:00Speaker 01

But again, this circles back to our other fact check. In reality, no. Like, no. Revenge is bad and it's a poison.

• 1:50:11Dax Shepard?

Yep. And forgiveness is very good for your brain.

• 1:50:14Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:50:14Dax Shepard?

It stops this back and forth cycle.

• 1:50:16Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:50:17Dax Shepard?

It's just the right thing. And I kinda hate it. It's taking the fun out of, you know, like these movies that are just great. It's like you kidnap Liam Neeson's daughter and he's gonna fucking kill you. And we love that. That's so clean. You should get killed if you kidnap someone's daughter.

• 1:50:32Speaker 01

When I was home for Mother's Day, I was watching Dateline, obviously, with my parents, cause

• 1:50:37Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:50:38Speaker 01

They just can't get enough of that. Um.

• 1:50:40Dax Shepard?

Are they, do they, are they particularly into, uh, Keith Morrison, the way we are? Do they not have preferences?

• 1:50:47Speaker 01

There's no preference. They, they just.

• 1:50:49Dax Shepard?

  I don't like that.

• 1:50:50Speaker 01

As much as they can consume, they will. In fact, I, I probably can't say this, but there was something happened. There's something happening in the family-ish, a good thing, but. That my mom was like, well, you gotta be careful cuz people can get really crazy and she like devised this whole pla- plan in her head of how

• 1:51:12Dax Shepard?

  Someone would get murdered?

• 1:51:13Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 1:51:13Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:51:14Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:51:14Dax Shepard?

It could lead you to believe there's more murders going on than there are.

• 1:51:17Speaker 01

  Correct.

• 1:51:18Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:51:19Speaker 01

There was a man who killed a girl, like a eighteen year old or whatever, who killed another eighteen year old.

• 1:51:25Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:51:26Speaker 01

And, or maybe he was nineteen or something, whatever. He killed someone and like, you know, he's up for her, he's up to get out a lot, but the mom and the sister keep going and basically making sure he stays in jail.

• 1:51:39Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:51:40Speaker 01

And I respect, I understand, of course, I understand, but there was a part of me, you know, and I was like, I mean, maybe it's time to let him out?

• 1:51:49Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:51:50Speaker 01

And I was saying that and my mom was so disturbed by me saying that and I was like, Mom, his brain wasn't even developed. It's not developed till you're twenty five. And she's like, well, if you were the sister, and I was like, of course, of course, if I'm the sister, I want that person to rot in jail.

• 1:52:08Dax Shepard?

  That's right.

• 1:52:09Speaker 01

  So I get it.

• 1:52:10Dax Shepard?

Yeah, but it's been taking the fun out of some normal fantasies I play with.

• 1:52:14Speaker 01

  Yeah, like having like

• 1:52:15Dax Shepard?

  Cuz I have a lot.

• 1:52:16Speaker 01

Having empathy kind of ruins vigilantism.

• 1:52:19Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Just, just owning what's going on in my brain.

• 1:52:24Speaker 01

  Can you give an example?

• 1:52:25Dax Shepard?

Well, just, I, I think of all these scenarios all the time. I just, that's what I fantasize about.

• 1:52:31Speaker 01

  Killing?

• 1:52:32Dax Shepard?

  No, but like, um, protecting

• 1:52:36Speaker 01

  Right, yeah.

• 1:52:37Dax Shepard?

Forcing someone to apologize, you know, all these just like

• 1:52:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:52:42Dax Shepard?

Taking care of everyone and sheriffing.

• 1:52:44Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:52:44Dax Shepard?

And so I have all these bizarre fantasies. And then I just have to now go like, right, so you're hurt or someone else is hurt and your inclination is not to soothe, it's to hurt.

• 1:52:58Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:52:58Dax Shepard?

And that that'll somehow erase the hurt and it just, it doesn't and it won't. And it's, it's less fun, my imagination now, and I'm kind of angry, kind of like I,

• 1:53:08Speaker 01

  Oh, it's a cycle then.

• 1:53:09Dax Shepard?

Yeah, like I couldn't, I had, there's so many things I've had to stop doing on this show. Like be disparaging about BDP people, be disparaging, right? Even the sociopath, we had a sociopath on, I am like, fuck, I kind of feel bad for sociopaths.

• 1:53:23Speaker 01

  Yeah, you're, we're, yeah.

• 1:53:24Dax Shepard?

  But I don't like it. I mean, I like it. I think it's, I think it's good, it's a good direction, but I also.

• 1:53:31Speaker 01

I've been thinking about this a lot. I, I, I think this show has fundamentally made me a, a fully different person. I was so, I was so, yes, that person needs to rot it. Like, I would never have ever thought for a second, like, eh, maybe it's time to let that guy out.

• 1:53:50Dax Shepard?

What's our goal? Or we, do we want to?

• 1:53:53Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:53:53Dax Shepard?

  Punish or keep people safe?

• 1:53:54Speaker 01

Yeah. And I think it has to do with the amount of stories we've heard.

• 1:53:59Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:53:59Speaker 01

And the amount of people we've gotten to talk to. Uh, yeah. I, I wonder who I'd be without it. I didn't know, my mom and brother, we were at dinner and I was doing this about somebody or something. And they were like, oh, you always see the best in people. Like, they were saying it kind of annoyed.

• 1:54:19Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, like you're naive or?

• 1:54:22Speaker 01

Yeah, or just like, we know you want to look at that perspective.

• 1:54:27Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:54:27Speaker 01

But this is what we want to talk about, the bad thing.

• 1:54:30Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:54:31Speaker 01

And I would never, I, I am not someone who was born thinking the best of people.

• 1:54:41Dax Shepard?

  Right, right, right, right.

• 1:54:42Speaker 01

So that's something new and I'm grateful for it.

• 1:54:45Dax Shepard?

Um, so I wouldn't even say mine is that I now think the best of people. It's that I much more understand, or I think I understand how bad the person had it to begin with, that ended them there.

• 1:55:01Speaker 01

Yes, that some things aren't choice.

• 1:55:03Dax Shepard?

But I think there's, you know, I think they're, well, I'm not bad in quotes, but.

• 1:55:07Speaker 01

Well, yeah, I guess that's, that's the lesson. Like, I don't think people are bad. I think you've become. Who you become based on experience and things you can't control?

• 1:55:17Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:55:18Speaker 01

  Um, so.

• 1:55:19Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, it's hard.

• 1:55:20Speaker 01

It's hard. Yeah, it's hard after you know that.

• 1:55:23Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I feel like I can only be like ethically judgmental of someone that's got the exact same scenario as me. Like, I'm free to say, no, you should be doing better with this set of circumstances. But beyond that, I really have no business saying what someone should, what level they have.

• 1:55:39Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:55:39Dax Shepard?

  Should have risen to.

• 1:55:41Speaker 01

Yeah, and that applies to everyone. That applies to the person whose family was hurt. They've been through something that causes them to act the way they act. Anyway, um, okay, so some facts. What is the Jersey Devil?

• 1:55:56Dax Shepard?

  What is the Jersey Devil?

• 1:55:58Speaker 01

In South Jersey and Philadelphia folklore in the US, the Jersey Devil, also known as the Leeds Devil, a legendary creature or cryptid, said to inhabit the forests of the Pine Barrens in South Jersey. The creature is often described as flying biped.

• 1:56:13Dax Shepard?

It looks kind of cute, actually.

• 1:56:15Speaker 01

With hooves, but there are many variations.

• 1:56:19Dax Shepard?

Hmm. Yeah, it looks kind of like a smiling reptile, but with ram horns and chicken legs and dragon wings.

• 1:56:27Speaker 01

  Yeah, bat-like wings, it says.

• 1:56:30Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:56:30Speaker 01

Um, the origin of the legend, though, a woman named Leeds was giving birth to her 13th child and exclaimed, "Let the child be the devil." The child, though born normally, immediately grew wings, tail and claws, and flew out of the Pine Barrens.

• 1:56:44Dax Shepard?

That's all you gotta do is say, "Let him be the devil," and that you can convert your.

• 1:56:48Speaker 01

  If you're Mrs. Leeds.

• 1:56:50Dax Shepard?

  Oh, wow.

• 1:56:51Speaker 01

Yeah. How much is a pedicab ride in New York-ish? Um, through Times Square, a short ride within Times Square might cost $15 to $30, while a more extensive tour could range from $40 to $150 per person.

• 1:57:07Dax Shepard?

  Hmm.

• 1:57:08Speaker 01

  It's kind of steep.

• 1:57:09Dax Shepard?

Pricey way to get around town.

• 1:57:10Speaker 01

  Yeah, but fast.

• 1:57:12Dax Shepard?

  Super fast.

• 1:57:13Speaker 01

Because you get to go in between.

• 1:57:15Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 1:57:16Speaker 01

Um, record for how long someone was in a Broadway show? The record for the longest time spent by an actor in a single Broadway show is held by George Lee Andrews, who performed the Phantom of the Opera for 23 years.

• 1:57:29Dax Shepard?

  Oh my lord.

• 1:57:30Speaker 01

  From 1987 to 2011.

• 1:57:32Dax Shepard?

  Whoa.

• 1:57:34Speaker 01

He performed a total of 9,382 performances.

• 1:57:37Dax Shepard?

  Oh my god.

• 1:57:38Speaker 01

During his tenure, he played multiple roles, including ensemble members and the roles of Monsieur Fermine and Monsieur Andre.

• 1:57:46Dax Shepard?

  9,000 performances?

• 1:57:49Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:57:50Dax Shepard?

I'm like, still so proud of us for 900 episodes, and now I feel like a weakling.

• 1:57:56Speaker 01

Yeah. And do you think, it's one of those things when you've done something so much that if like, he forgets a line in his 7,000th performance, he's probably so afraid of dementia.

• 1:58:08Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 1:58:09Speaker 01

He's like, how could I, I've been doing this 7,000.

• 1:58:12Dax Shepard?

I bet he could most certainly do that role, soup to nuts, and never once be present on stage.

• 1:58:20Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:58:20Dax Shepard?

Like, it completely in his mind, thinking about other stuff. I'm sure his subconscious could do that performance.

• 1:58:26Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:58:27Dax Shepard?

And he's just probably in La La Land for two hours.

• 1:58:30Speaker 01

  But he loves the theater.

• 1:58:32Dax Shepard?

Or he's addicted to that cheddar.

• 1:58:35Speaker 01

  I don't think that's what he's addicted to.

• 1:58:37Dax Shepard?

I think he's addicted to cheddar.

• 1:58:38Speaker 01

They don't make much money. But that reminds me, sometimes I forget the gate code to your house. And I think every time I forget, I think like, oh, I'm ill, like, something's wrong. How could I possibly forget this thing I do every day? I then have to look it up.

• 1:58:58Dax Shepard?

  Sure, sure, sure. Yeah.

• 1:59:00Speaker 01

  Isn't that scary?

• 1:59:01Dax Shepard?

Yeah. I get scared like that, yeah. And that stuff happens to me.

• 1:59:04Speaker 01

  Does it?

• 1:59:05Dax Shepard?

Yeah. And now we're being monitored. So it's like, I have the thought, it's like, I cannot think of a name of someone I know very well.

• 1:59:12Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:59:13Dax Shepard?

And then I go, well, I guess the next. Cognition tests we have for our Alzheimer's thing is just gonna show that yes, I am in

• 1:59:20Speaker 01

  Decline.

• 1:59:20Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:59:22Speaker 01

  Yeah. It's weird.

• 1:59:24Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Like, I don't know if it's comforting or not comforting that we will find out. I can't decide that. Like, normally you'd just be having these thoughts in a vacuum and then you'd probably convince yourself later that you're, you know, you'd be thinking sharp that day and be like, oh, no, nothing's going on. But we're gonna be told.

• 1:59:41Speaker 01

  Well, unless we don't decline.

• 1:59:43Dax Shepard?

  Correct.

• 1:59:44Speaker 01

Which is the goal, is to be doing all these other things.

• 1:59:47Dax Shepard?

  We're gonna decline.

• 1:59:49Speaker 01

But not to a scary, hopefully not to a scary level.

• 1:59:51Dax Shepard?

Some days it feels like it's happening at a scary pace.

• 1:59:54Speaker 01

I think it's when it's like gloomy out.

• 1:59:57Dax Shepard?

  That's when you.

• 1:59:59Speaker 01

It's more weather based. Um, okay, this vault, this Warner Brothers situation where there are shows that are gone.

• 2:00:10Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:00:11Speaker 01

Um, is true. And yeah, you can't watch Westworld. I looked on Max today. You can't find, it's not there. You can like go to Amazon Prime and buy it.

• 2:00:19Dax Shepard?

  You can.

• 2:00:20Speaker 01

Yeah, but you can't watch it on Max.

• 2:00:23Dax Shepard?

  That's so weird.

• 2:00:24Speaker 01

I know. Also, now it's HBO Max again. Did you hear this?

• 2:00:28Dax Shepard?

  No.

• 2:00:30Speaker 01

  They are, they.

• 2:00:31Dax Shepard?

  Now they've gone back to.

• 2:00:32Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 2:00:33Dax Shepard?

By the way, I always said HBO was the crown jewel, not Max. I don't know why they didn't.

• 2:00:38Speaker 01

Exactly, but I think, well, I heard it was just some guy's idea who had power. And then they did it. And then obviously it never worked. Like, people wouldn't say it right.

• 2:00:49Dax Shepard?

You'd still say it's on HBO.

• 2:00:51Speaker 01

Yeah, people would say it's, and so, um, it's HBO Max again. And if we have to re-download that shit, I'm gonna be pissed.

• 2:00:58Dax Shepard?

But it would be like Mercedes buying Dodge and then deciding to rename all this Mercedes Dodge. That makes no sense. You would, you would.

• 2:01:07Speaker 01

You want to stick with your most prestigious name. I know. Home box office.

• 2:01:12Dax Shepard?

I think maybe they got excited that Max sounds like the maximum amount of content.

• 2:01:16Speaker 01

Well, they didn't want it to just be HBO, obviously, because there's more there.

• 2:01:22Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 2:01:23Speaker 01

  But HBO Max seems.

• 2:01:26Speaker 01

  Good to me.

• 2:01:27Dax Shepard?

  TJ Maxx.

• 2:01:28Speaker 01

But it was HBO, then HBO Max, then Max, right?

• 2:01:30Speaker 05

  HBO Go.

• 2:01:31Dax Shepard?

  HBO Go.

• 2:01:32Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah. Oh, my god.

• 2:01:34Speaker 05

John Oliver does a whole bit on the last episode.

• 2:01:37Speaker 01

  Oh, that's really funny.

• 2:01:39Dax Shepard?

  I.

• 2:01:39Speaker 01

They are having fun with it, though. They have, like, obviously, some, like, Gen Z person running their social media, because they're, like, putting funny.

• 2:01:47Dax Shepard?

  Burning themselves?

• 2:01:48Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:01:49Dax Shepard?

Okay, that's good. But it's been making me sign in a lot lately, and I wonder if that's related to this name change. It's been challenging.

• 2:01:56Speaker 01

  Probably.

• 2:01:56Dax Shepard?

Do we have to download another fucking app?

• 2:01:58Speaker 01

  That's what I said.

• 2:01:58Dax Shepard?

Or are they just gonna update the current one?

• 2:01:59Speaker 01

That's what I was just said.

• 2:02:01Dax Shepard?

We're so intolerant. It used to be like you had to catch the show live or you didn't see it. Now it's like.

• 2:02:06Speaker 01

  You have to.

• 2:02:07Dax Shepard?

  I had to sign in.

• 2:02:08Speaker 01

I know. Okay, I was gonna play just a teeny, teeny clip of her on 30 Rock. She mentions a character she plays that's, like, wild.

• 2:02:17Speaker 03

I knew I smelled sausage. Yes. Abby? I'm Liz. Liz, thank you. Our nips just touched. Mine are so hard. Mine are different sizes.

• 2:02:34Speaker 01

That's all I'll play. But yeah, she's a very silly. That 30 Rock is such a fucking good show.

• 2:02:40Dax Shepard?

Yeah, it's almost like, um, in some ways, underappreciated.

• 2:02:44Speaker 01

  Yeah. There she is.

• 2:02:46Dax Shepard?

Oh, yeah. Our nips just touched? Is that what she said?

• 2:02:50Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:02:51Dax Shepard?

Yeah, it's a great show. Tina Fey, one of the great talents of all time.

• 2:02:54Speaker 01

Um, okay, I've found this weird thing. She said, what's it called when you feel forever 27?

• 2:03:03Dax Shepard?

  Mm-hmm. That has a name.

• 2:03:05Speaker 01

So then I looked it up, and it said, "The phenomenon of feeling forever 27, or experiencing a fascination with the idea of never aging beyond a certain age, is often connected to the 27 Club, a cultural concept referencing celebrities who died at the age of 27."

• 2:03:20Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:03:21Speaker 01

"The idea, while rooted in tragedy, has also become a symbol of a certain rebellious energy and a desire to hold on to youth."

• 2:03:27Dax Shepard?

Hmm, live fast and die young.

• 2:03:29Speaker 01

  I, I guess. Isn't that weird?

• 2:03:32Dax Shepard?

Who's that list? Hendrix, Janis Joplin?

• 2:03:34Speaker 01

Amy Winehouse, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix.

• 2:03:42Speaker 01

Well, we know that Belushi and Chris Farley made it to 33, the age of Jesus.

• 2:03:50Dax Shepard?

  Mm-hmm.

• 2:03:51Speaker 01

  So they're not on here.

• 2:03:52Dax Shepard?

  That's good.

• 2:03:53Speaker 01

Yeah. Okay. We did talk about astrology, so I did real quick, wanna just real quick.

• 2:03:58Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, of course.

• 2:03:59Speaker 01

Do today's astrology. Poststar is the app I use. Let's see what it says today. One hour ago. You don't have high standards. You just want someone who, Capricorn, will discreetly tell you if you have food stuck in your teeth.

• 2:04:16Dax Shepard?

Wouldn't everyone like that? You'd like that, right?

• 2:04:19Speaker 01

No, I might, I'll be embarrassed. I do want it.

• 2:04:21Dax Shepard?

You'd rather have food stuck in your teeth?

• 2:04:22Speaker 01

  No, I don't. I want it, but I, I don't want it either.

• 2:04:26Dax Shepard?

Okay. You don't want the solution to it.

• 2:04:28Speaker 01

You don't. You don't have high standards. You just want someone who, me, Virgo, reliably uses the correct there, there, there.

• 2:04:36Dax Shepard?

  Oh, sure.

• 2:04:37Speaker 01

Okay, that adds up. Um, wait, Rob, what are you?

• 2:04:42Speaker 05

  Uh, Gemini, I think.

• 2:04:44Dax Shepard?

  Uh-oh.

• 2:04:44Speaker 01

Rob, actually, that makes total sense.

• 2:04:48Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah.

• 2:04:49Speaker 01

That makes total sense that you're a Gemini.

• 2:04:52Dax Shepard?

  Such a Gemini.

• 2:04:53Speaker 01

  The twins. One's a rascal.

• 2:04:56Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 2:04:57Speaker 01

  Aren't they the twins?

• 2:04:59Speaker 01

I think they are. You don't have high standards. You just want someone who shares the passwords to all their streaming accounts.

• 2:05:06Speaker 05

I think people tell me I'm more of a Cancer than a Gemini, because I'm running the edge.

• 2:05:10Speaker 01

Okay. You don't have high standards. You just want someone who can listen without sharing a tangentially related story.

• 2:05:17Dax Shepard?

Who can listen without sharing it.

• 2:05:22Speaker 01

I don't think so. I don't know many people like that. Kristen's a Cancer, and my mom.

• 2:05:27Dax Shepard?

  She only tells tangential.

• 2:05:29Speaker 01

But she wants, no. So this is saying she wants to be able to tell you a story and you not go on a tangent.

• 2:05:37Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:05:37Speaker 01

With your own story. Basically, everything we do here.

• 2:05:40Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. And I don't think that's true. I don't know if that's true of Aaron either, but maybe. I'll ask him. I think he likes a tangential story as well.

• 2:05:49Speaker 01

I'll ask Anna. I'll ask my mom. I'll ask.

• 2:05:51Dax Shepard?

  So many cancers.

• 2:05:51Speaker 01

  I, I do have a lot of.

• 2:05:54Dax Shepard?

July and August, big, big birthday months.

• 2:05:56Speaker 01

  Yeah, they are.

• 2:05:59Speaker 01

  Coming up.

• 2:06:01Dax Shepard?

  That's right around the corner.

• 2:06:02Speaker 01

  Um, all right, that's it.

• 2:06:04Dax Shepard?

  That's it?

• 2:06:04Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:06:05Dax Shepard?

  That's it for Kristen?

• 2:06:06Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's it for Kristen.

• 2:06:07Dax Shepard?

  All right. Love you.

• 2:06:08Speaker 01

  Love you.
