Hello and welcome to Table manners. I'm Jessie Ware and I'm here with Lenny. It's a sunny day. How's your week been, Lenny?

• 2:17Speaker 04

  Hectic, darling, I would say.

• 2:19Jessie Ware?

We did a little thing at the London Palladium with our friend Phil Rosenthal. He had a night there and we kind of, I don't know, we bookended him.

• 2:29Speaker 04

  We were facilitators.

• 2:31Jessie Ware?

  What do you call that?

• 2:32Speaker 04

  They called us coordinators.

• 2:34Jessie Ware?

Coordinators? That's not very sexy. But we had a really nice time and I bought him some of my favourite things in London. A Rita's martini, a Gilda martini.

• 2:45Speaker 04

  I ate the whole chili.

• 2:46Jessie Ware?

The Rita's martini is, I've spoken about this before, but Missy, who is the creator of the martini, she puts an anchovy, stuffed blue cheese, olive, delicious, and then a jalapeno.

• 3:01Jessie Ware?

  And mum didn't know this.

• 3:02Speaker 04

  My glasses off.

• 3:04Jessie Ware?

  And what happened then?

• 3:05Speaker 04

So I bit into the jalapeno chili and thought, this is a chili, it's not a gherkin. My eyes started to water. I'm sitting on stage. I thought, there's only one way through this. I can't chew it down. So I swallowed it whole.

• 3:23Jessie Ware?

Can't go over it, can't go under it, we'll have to go through it.

• 3:28Speaker 04

  Had to swallow it whole.

• 3:29Jessie Ware?

Oh my god, I love it. Anyway, we did that. Dinner for 100, bought some pizza. The audience enjoyed that. And then I chanced it with what I've heard is the best tiramisu in London.

• 3:41Speaker 04

It's made by Nicola Lam. She won the Andre Simon Book Award.

• 3:46Jessie Ware?

  Oh, she's sift.

• 3:47Speaker 04

  She's sift.

• 3:48Jessie Ware?

  Oh, really?

• 3:50Speaker 04

  She's fabulous. She's such a lovely person.

• 3:53Jessie Ware?

Well, it's at Passeo, which is, I think, quite a new opening. Anyway, it was a delicious tiramisu. Phil nearly walked off with it.

• 4:02Jessie Ware?

We had a really nice time, didn't we? It was really lovely to see him again and just see his lovely audience. He had like nine year olds asking him about

• 4:09Speaker 04

  They adore him.

• 4:10Jessie Ware?

About the pad thai that he tried in Bangkok. And it was just so sweet. On the menu today is another Easter belfry recipe, which I've enjoyed my friend Samantha making me. It's

• 4:25Jessie Ware?

Sounds quite divisive. It's a prawn lasagna. I know, I know. And I, I hear you. When she said she was gonna make me a prawn lasagna, I said, I'm not sure about that. But actually, what's more-

• 4:33Speaker 04

I think there's nothing wrong with prawns and pasta.

• 4:35Jessie Ware?

  No, delicious.

• 4:37Speaker 04

The only thing is the added hot sauce.

• 4:41Jessie Ware?

No, okay, so it does have a habanero chili, but you do take it out and you put a bit of habanero chili oil on top. The bechamel is so easy because it's just double cream and then grated parmesan. It's actually really straightforward. Fingers crossed, because I've never made it before.

• 4:54Speaker 04

I hope no one's lactus intolerant today, because I've done a lemon curd roulade and I had a bit of disaster because I didn't have any lemon curds. I had to make it. Never made it before.

• 5:04Jessie Ware?

  So delirious of you.

• 5:05Speaker 04

Very delirious. I just whipped it up.

• 5:07Jessie Ware?

I hope our guest isn't still doing the keto diet, to be honest, because this is carbs and dairy and all of it. So we have Jonathan Ross and his daughter, Honey Ross, who present the podcast Reel Talk, which is a movie, television, review show, brilliant podcast.

• 5:26Speaker 04

They're such enthusiasts about telly and film that it makes you really interested in what they're talking about.

• 5:34Jessie Ware?

I mean, Jonathan Ross has been in the like movie-

• 5:36Speaker 04

  He presented the film programme.

• 5:39Jessie Ware?

Yeah, Jonathan Ross took over Barry Norman's TV show about reviewing films. I just really love him and Honey together. They speak much more politely than we do together. They're really respectful.

• 5:50Speaker 04

  She's got a lovely voice.

• 5:51Jessie Ware?

She's gorgeous. Last time I saw Honey, she was belting out Taylor Swift behind me in a stadium and knew every single word and she was sobbing. I can't wait to chat to them. They're coming on to talk about the podcast and I guess living, growing up together and all things food. Jonathan and Honey Ross coming up on Table manners.

• 6:19Jessie Ware?

Jonathan and Honey Ross, thank you so much for schlepping it over to South East London.

• 6:23Speaker 05

Thank you for asking us to schlep.

• 6:24Jessie Ware?

Um, we're so happy to have you. Um, we love the podcast. We love hearing you two speak to each other so respectfully.

• 6:31Speaker 04

  We do.

• 6:32Jessie Ware?

We could learn a lot from your relationship.

• 6:34Speaker 05

You are respectful to each other, you are. You're very respectful.

• 6:36Speaker 04

We love each other, I'm not sure we're respectful.

• 6:39Jessie Ware?

You're very honest with each other though, and I like that.

• 6:41Speaker 04

  Yeah, that was crap, Jess.

• 6:44Speaker 05

But that's honest and that's okay. I'd like to hear, I'd like to hear a podcast where you're just talking about each other and the other one's not in the room.

• 6:50Speaker 04

No, we're very loyal, I think. Don't you think?

• 6:53Jessie Ware?

  Yeah. I don't know.

• 6:55Speaker 04

Jessie's mean. Whenever I say, someone said, "I love the podcast" to me and Jess said, "Oh, did they recognise your whining voice much?"

• 7:04Speaker 05

  But that's, that is.

• 7:05Speaker 04

That's what I'm dealing with, honey.

• 7:06Speaker 05

I've learned this phrase from honey, that is her, that is her love language to you.

• 7:10Speaker 04

  Is it love language?

• 7:11Speaker 05

That is her feeling so comfortable and so close and so kind of at ease with you that she can express a kind of humorous take on it.

• 7:18Jessie Ware?

  Yes.

• 7:19Speaker 05

Without it being necessarily, and, and also it's a great way of disguising the truth.

• 7:24Jessie Ware?

That's how I reframe it, because my dad's quite savage, he's quite brutal and, and be like, I'll often be like, "Love you", and he'll be like, "Yeah, alright", like over text. And I know that he does love me and I know that that's just a bit. So I'm like, that's how he feels safe expressing his true love for me.

• 7:39Speaker 05

But the gushing that goes on is just so tedious, you know, the people just being nice to each other all the time is exhausting.

• 7:47Speaker 04

  Do you still live together?

• 7:48Jessie Ware?

No. I, I moved out quite young, but I'm 28.

• 7:52Speaker 05

Yeah, you moved out when you were about 22?

• 7:54Jessie Ware?

No, I moved out when I was 19.

• 7:56Speaker 05

Yeah, and I stopped noticing when you were about 16, so.

• 8:01Jessie Ware?

It's true. I've always been the favourite, will always be the favourite.

• 8:05Speaker 04

  Are you the favourite?

• 8:05Speaker 05

  No.

• 8:07Jessie Ware?

  Not publicly.

• 8:08Speaker 05

I don't really have a favourite, but I have favourite things, I have three, and I have favourite things about all the different three of you.

• 8:13Jessie Ware?

Let's go through some of the favourite things about all three.

• 8:15Speaker 05

Oh, I, well, I like, one thing they all share is they're all kind, which is an important thing.

• 8:20Jessie Ware?

  All you want, right.

• 8:20Speaker 05

Yeah, and they're all respectful of other people, which is lovely. So they're kind of, that's kind of all I require from them, frankly. Um, and they're all, um, I think what's good is, and they've grown more this way, they've all grown better at advocating for themselves and kind of like drawing their own barriers on things. But that kind of comes with a, you're probably the last one to do that, um, but no, because you're the youngest.

• 8:41Jessie Ware?

Yeah, last one to get boundaries for sure. Working on it.

• 8:45Speaker 05

I mean, but you know, that's up to you. You've got to do the work.

• 8:48Jessie Ware?

  Oh, famously.

• 8:49Speaker 05

Get a move on. Um, so, uh, I, but I, I, and I, I like the fact that they're all kind of like, they've all got interesting minds. They've all got their, eh, they would have inquiring minds. You know, they're engaged with the world in ways which is kind of interesting and not just kind of plodding along. You know, so I, so I have admiration for all them as well as respect and love.

• 9:08Jessie Ware?

That was very nice. That was really lovely, Dad. Lovely.

• 9:11Speaker 05

Never say that again in public.

• 9:12Jessie Ware?

No, honestly, I'm like, I'm gonna save that, treasure that memory.

• 9:15Speaker 05

  Good.

• 9:15Jessie Ware?

  Thank you.

• 9:16Speaker 05

  Glad you got one.

• 9:17Jessie Ware?

Um, so, so, um, last time I saw you, honey. Mm. You were sobbing. Yes. At a Taylor Swift concert. Yes, I was. Pounding your chest and, and, and, and singing like you were going through the worst breakup. Are you okay, honey? Were you going through a breakup? I was going through a breakup. I felt that. You got it in one. I was living every lyric. Every lyric. And you apologized to me and I was like, I wanted, Taylor was great, but honey, Ross. Okay, I'm here for the three and a half hour gig. I felt so bad because you were there with your lovely, you were there with your daughter. I was there with my daughter, yeah. And your partner, your husband. Yeah. And me and my best friend are absolutely feral for Taylor Swift.

• 9:59Jessie Ware?

And we stood up and we sang for the entire three hour duration of the show. It was amazing. It felt like I was performing a concert. Honestly, I came back, I was like, God, I, I was really great out there, actually. So you really like her? Oh, my God. I. Is she your very favourite? She's my favourite fa- I would take a bullet for that woman, honestly. I love her so much.

• 10:18Speaker 05

But you've got a bunch of favourites.

• 10:20Jessie Ware?

  Parasocial, that's my parasocial.

• 10:21Speaker 05

Chapel, wow, and you love as well.

• 10:23Jessie Ware?

  Chapel, come on.

• 10:23Speaker 05

  Pony, finger magic.

• 10:24Jessie Ware?

Oh, Chapel's great. Is that Chapel? Yeah.

• 10:27Speaker 05

  Pony Club.

• 10:28Jessie Ware?

And I just thought it was really, because everyone's going, everyone's very offended by what she said about, um, people that have children. And I think it's hysterical.

• 10:36Speaker 05

  What did she say?

• 10:36Jessie Ware?

She said like, every person that I know that's got children looks miserable.

• 10:42Jessie Ware?

And they have no lives in their eyes. She doesn't really read the room. I listened to this Australian podcast and they were like, that's exactly what a twenty eight year old girl who doesn't have children should think. Like, that's what she should be looking at, being like, yeah, no, thank, I mean, they were like, it's hysterical. She's not in that stage of life, is she, yeah? Not that I am, but like I think.

• 10:59Speaker 05

But some people never wanna have kids. I remember, yeah, but and I think, you know, and that's absolutely fine, you know.

• 11:04Jessie Ware?

  Totally.

• 11:04Speaker 05

And I suppose there is a certain amount of pressure on women in particular to have kids, so maybe she's pushing back against that. But I remember once I interviewed Jackie Mason, you know, the old famous. And he said to me, you have kids? I said, you're happy? I went, yeah. He said, no, you're not. I went, oh, I'm not happy. Okay, I'm not. He went, no, I'm with kids is happy. And it was that, and that struck me, that was sort of wrong, I thought. That was wrong. And I got the feeling that maybe, and he'd never had kids, and maybe he was just so.

• 11:26Jessie Ware?

  Bitter.

• 11:27Speaker 05

Either bitter or maybe was so wanting to convince himself he hadn't missed out. But that was an odd thing to say.

• 11:32Speaker 04

I think it's the best thing I ever did.

• 11:35Jessie Ware?

  That's beautiful.

• 11:35Speaker 04

  Yeah, it really is.

• 11:36Speaker 05

Having you met your daughter, that's a slightly depressing thing to say.

• 11:40Speaker 04

We were trying to remember the name of the film show that you presented in, after Barry Norman.

• 11:47Speaker 05

That, well, that was just called, BBC called it The Film Show, but it was like film, whatever year it was.

• 11:52Jessie Ware?

  Like film two thousand.

• 11:53Speaker 05

I think it started in about seventy one or seventy two. Barry wasn't the first host. There were a bunch of hosts before him. And then Barry Norman was the longest serving host. And then I took over in two thousand to two thousand eleven, I think.

• 12:03Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 12:03Speaker 05

So it was film two thousand.

• 12:04Speaker 04

And what's it, the music was?

• 12:06Speaker 05

The music was a piano version of the song made famous by Nina Simone. I wish I could. One of my proudest moments, weirdly, was when I took over that show, I was so excited because I so loved watching him in it and I so love cinema. And I remember, um, walking, I was out for dinner with your mother, my wife, Jane, one night, and we'd gone out somewhere and we walked in and it was quite a shishi place. It was like a hotel in London. Where they had a pianist. And as I walked in, he saw me and he started playing the theme. And I thought, oh my god, I've got a theme. Which wasn't really mine, it was like the show's, but that was quite an exciting moment.

• 12:38Jessie Ware?

  That's so cute.

• 12:38Speaker 05

It's such a great song as well.

• 12:39Jessie Ware?

Can we go back to, well, honey, well, we can do both. Jonathan, your, your, your childhood, who was around the dinner table? With, and what were you eating? What's a very memorable dish from your childhood?

• 12:51Speaker 05

I mean, well, I, I come from a, a, a, I wouldn't say poor, but I guess we were poor by most, so we were not a well off family. We would all be round the table, but dinner wasn't a big kind of gathering meal. It was really much more of a pragmatic, you need fuel kind of situation. So we would all run in. Would always cook, the food wasn't, it was rarely kind of homemade from scratch. Once again, that's probably due to the sort of like financial situation, I don't know, but also I'm one of six kids, there was a lot of children to juggle. Yeah, uh, and so um, the sort of food we'd have would be, well, she used to do nice chicken and chips sometimes, and that would be home cooked. But often it'd be stuff like a fried bentor steak and kidney pie, which I still have a very big soft. The sort of flat tin, and you'd use a can opener to open it, then you put the whole tin in the oven.

• 13:36Speaker 05

But I think cause she was cooking obviously on a budget for a lot of family and sometimes we were. When I was very young, sometimes they struggled with cash, so food would be borrowed from other people and, and that's why, that's why, you see my fingers are weird shape. I cut my finger off when I was about one and a half because she'd gone out to borrow food, we had no food in the house. And she'd left me, not, not a wise decision, we looked after by my older brother, who himself was only three and a half, I believe. So that's not a great, not a great kind of, so that's how that happened. Um, so we grew up without money, but you know, but. It's odd because the absence of something you're not aware of unless you've experienced the opposite. So we weren't aware. Really, I mean, I knew we didn't have money, but it wasn't a big thing. So we would have stuff like that, so and then we'd have like, you know.

• 14:16Speaker 05

Tomato soup with spam sandwiches, which is a delicious treat. If you've never tried it, you dip a spam sandwich into a tomato soup and then, oh, it's delicious.

• 14:23Speaker 04

  Where were you brought up?

• 14:24Speaker 05

  Leytonstone, East London.

• 14:26Speaker 04

  Oh, you're proper.

• 14:27Speaker 05

Well, I was born actually in Camden, but they moved there when I was one, I think, or one and a half. So yeah, I only remember Leytonstone. Which I'm very fond of, I went back recently and it isn't the same of course, as nothing is when you go back, but still, you feel a certain. Level of comfort and security in the area that you spent most of your life. When I was there, I was there in East London until I was about twenty two, twenty three. And in Leytonstone, I was there until I was like nineteen, so it's still, you know, sort of calls to me somehow.

• 14:51Jessie Ware?

And, and then honey, where did you grow up with the, and who was around your dinner table and what were you eating? Um, good question. We grew up, I grew up in Golders Green, kind of North London. And I was very lucky, like my mum's an amazing cook, she's incredible, she's very warm, she's very, very maternal naturally.

• 15:10Speaker 04

  Is she Jewish?

• 15:11Jessie Ware?

She is Jewish, yeah, she's a good Jewish woman. A really good cook as well.

• 15:14Speaker 05

  Thank you.

• 15:15Jessie Ware?

You've gotten better. When I was younger, you weren't amazing.

• 15:17Speaker 05

I didn't really cook at all when you were young though.

• 15:19Jessie Ware?

  No, you didn't really.

• 15:20Speaker 05

I actually did sometimes. I was sometimes busted a big meal, but your mother was the primary kind of like. And for a long while, of course, you know, she was looking after you. We didn't have any help and she was making sure that she was there to look after you and. So of course inevitably those jobs were for two and you're right, she's a spectacular cook.

• 15:34Jessie Ware?

She would make like, I have such vivid memory of her making like this incredible Guinness pie. Like, that's like a classic recipe, I think, oh god, I can't, because she was sending me it the other day because I wanted to make it for someone and um. Yeah, just like a gorgeous like beef, like hearty stew, like with um carrots and potatoes, but like you put a whole can of Guinness in it. And you stew it for like four hours, unbelievable.

• 15:54Speaker 05

Remember her jambalaya, she used to do for me, jambalaya with sweet potato chips.

• 15:58Jessie Ware?

Her jambalaya, she's just, oh, she's what a woman. My mother is such a spectacular woman, like obsessed with her. Um but I always, I liked that growing up when we'd have dinners. There was kind of no separation of like adults and kids at the dinner table, like I really liked that of um. You would have all your friends over and then me, my brother and my sister.

• 16:20Speaker 05

Don't go spreading the incorrect rumor, I have friends.

• 16:24Jessie Ware?

You did once, in the two thousands, early two thousands, we had like three friends.

• 16:27Speaker 05

Busy house and we always had kids from the school there, friends would join us as well and um.

• 16:32Jessie Ware?

We were very much that house, which people would come over after school. I wanna know about the infamous Halloween parties. Oh, yeah.

• 16:38Speaker 05

Have you never been to one, Jessie?

• 16:39Jessie Ware?

I've never been invited to one.

• 16:40Speaker 05

Sorry, you've probably missed out, we might not do anymore, I don't know.

• 16:43Jessie Ware?

But can can you tell me the origins of that? Because that was before Halloween was as big a deal here. You've been doing it for ages. You were a trailblazer with that.

• 16:51Speaker 05

Jane and I were always very much enamored of like that aspect to American culture. I grew up really loving the idea of America and I grew up in a period when people didn't travel there. Because it was very expensive, you know, before really until Virgin came along. You know, there was Freddie Laker, do you remember his Airbus, Lenny, Lenny came out, that was a big deal, it was affordable flights to a USA before that. It was only well off families and well off people who travelled like that. So I grew up dreaming, would I ever one day go to America.

• 17:14Speaker 04

But you also a comic book.

• 17:16Speaker 05

Yes, so I'd see these adverts, I'd see these adverts in comic books for like theme parks in New Jersey. I think, oh my god. To go there and just the concept of America as a place as a kind of a, kind of an iconic kind of location. Um, and so we, we love that and, and when Jane and I were first together, we would go every year on Boxing Day, we would, before we had kids, we'd fly to New York. Spend New York there and sometimes go down, we had a lovely time and we saw how big it was in America and we, and we always loved the idea of Halloween. So we always made our house, even, even before we had kids, actually, we'd always put something in the window and have trick or treats ready for other kids coming, not that many came. And when, when we had children, we'd go out with them and we were always a little bit disappointed that the number of houses that weren't joining in, you know, you'd have to walk.

• 17:56Speaker 05

You'd have to walk quite a long way to find someone who knew it was even going on. So we wanted our place to always be very much a kind of Halloween house. Strong on Halloween. They're not, yeah.

• 18:05Speaker 05

But, you know, nor, nor, nor Christians, to be honest with you, you know, it's like most, and I don't think the Muslims mess with it much either. So it's really kind of just become a kind of a commercial thing, I think now, and that's why it's taken hold. And so, um, we would always make that a big deal for us and we'd make sure kids locally knew we were doing it. And then we started doing a Halloween party in the garden for our kids. It was just for us at first. Yeah, it was just for the little ones and we'd have, and I'd invite all their classes. So we'd wind up with about eighty kids there, cause we'd say, you know. You're very, that is selfless. It was very pure. Well, no, hear this.

• 18:32Speaker 05

  And, and initially.

• 18:35Speaker 05

He would organise a treasure hunt in the garden. So we'd do a treasure hunt in the garden. One year I hired some costumes for me, so I was. Several costume changes. I was a werewolf in one bed and then when they were moving on, they were led by giant expert, I'd run around and I'd be getting into a Dracula costume.

• 18:47Speaker 05

Sounds like a bum bum train. He was doing one man bum bum train. And one, one year I had flu, that was a really scary year. But also we had Jane's mum, Amanda, one year was pretending to be a witch and sat in a caravan. But weirdly, I think she didn't get the right message, cause when the kids were there, she was talking to them about slightly inappropriate things about. Talking to us on penetration.

• 19:03Speaker 05

You'll be a woman soon and you'll, you'll have to deal with things. I was like, what are you doing? They're like nine. She was going like, yeah, women are controlled by the moon and the tides and we're like, that's scary in a different way, you know, I'm like.

• 19:16Jessie Ware?

Oh, we know that's coming down the pipe, right?

• 19:18Speaker 05

Started on the patriarchy. Um, and so then, as the children got older, and then I moved it and I got more extravagant. And then I thought, wouldn't it be funny if they had a kind of event? So I set up a kind of a, a kind of a bouncy castle type thing in the, in the end of the garden where we had guns, they'd fire that we had zombies and they could, they were on the bounce castle, they were safe. And I had some people dressed as zombies walk around and they could fire at them to kill zombies.

• 19:39Speaker 04

You must have had so many friends, around Halloween, everyone was your best friend.

• 19:44Jessie Ware?

Oh, yeah, I was very popular around October. It was an amazing time, though, like you, the level of work you put into it. You'd organised like these really elaborate mazes and.

• 19:54Speaker 05

Well, then they developed, I developed, I had a maze built in the garden and, um. I had some actors for the kids in that. And then when they got a little bit older, I realised, oh, we could invite some of our friends. And then it became a grown up party. And then I really went to town. So I used to hire about twenty or thirty actors and go all out on the, all out. So you'd go in one room and it was The Exorcist and there was a woman in bed. Another room, it was Ringu, the Japanese film. And I had a TV screen set up. And the woman actually emerged from the TV screen and chased people away. One year I based it on Cabin in the Woods, which I don't know if either of you have seen that film.

• 20:25Jessie Ware?

  I, I'm really not into scary films. I'm very, I'm a nervous, like, I can't do it.

• 20:29Speaker 05

  It's a masterpiece.

• 20:30Jessie Ware?

  I can't do suspense.

• 20:32Speaker 05

And one of the things in that film was that everyone's being watched by people in the control tower, kind of a thing, and watched how they react to the horrific things they're being put through. And I set this maze up, it took me forever, where you, when you entered the maze, I'd let eight people go in at once. You were being filmed. And when you got to the central room, showing on the many screens in there was footage of you entering from like five minutes.

• 20:49Jessie Ware?

  Oh, my god.

• 20:50Speaker 05

So I went to that level.

• 20:51Jessie Ware?

You'd been surveilled the whole time.

• 20:52Speaker 05

  Must have been.

• 20:52Speaker 04

  Oh, my goodness.

• 20:53Speaker 05

Two hundred people went through this maze. You know, any people noticed the work I put in there? Two. No one else noticed. I was so fit. I said, did you like the bit when you got in the room? Oh, yeah, the zombies were scary. I said, what about the other thing? What other thing? Two people noticed it. So, uh, we would go a bit crazy and it did, it did dominate. We stopped when my eldest got ill after Covid. Uh, they had long Covid and, um, moved back in with us. And I thought, I can't have a big party going in the garden. When someone's upstairs in bed and can't enjoy life in that way. So we stopped it then. And we had two since then, I think.

• 21:24Jessie Ware?

We did one not at the house.

• 21:25Speaker 05

Yeah, I did one at Coco in London, the club in London.

• 21:27Jessie Ware?

  Was that fun?

• 21:28Speaker 05

It was fun. It wasn't quite as much fun, um, but it was still a lot of fun.

• 21:32Jessie Ware?

I also think it was nice for you because. They could just leave, you and mum, that you know, they don't like a late night. Does the clearing up?

• 21:37Speaker 05

Well, we all pitch in, but we have someone who helps us at home anyway. And then, you know, but it was more than just cleaning up because we had to put, because it's October.

• 21:43Jessie Ware?

All the decorations you have on the outside.

• 21:45Speaker 05

Well, we don't have in the house so much. We do it in the garden, so we put, I'd hire some like small marquees in the garden and one big mother loving marquee in the, uh, where we have a tennis court. And that's why I put the maze in. So it was three or four days of de-rigging going on afterwards. It was a ma- it's a major thing.

• 22:00Jessie Ware?

So then like, were your birthday parties just a bit of a letdown? Honestly, I do feel like Halloween for us was like bigger than Christmas, so everything else kind of paled in comparison, but you always went all out for birthdays.

• 22:12Speaker 05

We made, we always made sure, but we did what most, you know, people would do, especially, you know, anyone who's lucky enough to have a bit of cash, so we would have like an entertainer. We'd have all their school friends, we'd have nice food. One year Honey set a particularly arduous task for us though, because Honey and her brother Harvey were inexplicably very, very um into the Disney movie Mulan.

• 22:32Jessie Ware?

Okay. Obsessed, like fixated, watched it every night for about two months.

• 22:36Speaker 05

A good film, but not one of the classics.

• 22:38Jessie Ware?

It's not my fave. Actually, I don't know if I've ever fully watched it. I'd say revisit.

• 22:44Speaker 05

Donny Osmond writes a singing voice of the lead guy. Cross the waging river, like that, which I sang to him once, he was delighted, I knew it was him. Um, and then, so we had to get a Mulan themed party and of course, there was no, normally if you want Cinderella, you get the Disney part, there were Cinderella cups. Or Snow White cups, or Little Mermaid cups, nothing, no Mulan merch whatsoever.

• 23:03Jessie Ware?

  So what did you do?

• 23:04Speaker 05

Well, I think we, um, we, Jane made a Mulan themed cake.

• 23:08Jessie Ware?

  She made an amazing cake.

• 23:09Speaker 05

We hired some entertainers and said, look, we need to try and figure out a dragon costume for you. We need a Mulan costume for you. So we sorted all that. So we did a Mulan. Probably the only Mulan themed party that had happened up to that point.

• 23:20Jessie Ware?

Yeah. And it was breathtaking. I still remember it to this day. It was gorgeous. And so the, the Guinness pie is a big memory for you. Yeah, the Guinness pie. Interesting, Frey Bento's over here and then a pie over there.

• 23:32Speaker 04

You like a pie then in your.

• 23:33Jessie Ware?

We like a pie. We like something hearty, we like food.

• 23:35Speaker 05

  That often anymore, do we?

• 23:39Jessie Ware?

Yeah, but last time I met you Jonathan and I was on your show. I swear we would, because I was like, you should come on the podcast, he was like, and I think you had just lost some weight. Because you wanted to, tell everyone why you wanted to lose the weight.

• 23:52Speaker 05

I think was that because I wanted to get into my vintage clothing.

• 23:54Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, your cool vintage clothing.

• 23:56Speaker 05

And I've now put some, but not all of it back on and I'm now fighting to get it off again.

• 24:00Jessie Ware?

You were, you were like, I, I actually can't do your food because that, because at the moment I'm just not eating.

• 24:06Speaker 05

I got down again to about in old money, I'm fifteen stone at the moment, I should be about fourteen. And I got down to thirteen and a half and then I could wear all my eighties trousers.

• 24:14Jessie Ware?

Well, I'm apologising in advance, but this is deliciously calorific.

• 24:19Speaker 04

So, you're like, you're going on to a desert island for a little while. What would be your last supper, honey?

• 24:27Jessie Ware?

  I would do.

• 24:29Speaker 04

Start a main course and drink of choice.

• 24:32Jessie Ware?

Okay, that's made it easier, that's, because I was imagining like one big full one, that stressed me out, okay. So I think drink, at the moment I'd love a dirty martini, that would be my beverage, yeah, for sure, filthy, filthy.

• 24:44Speaker 05

Tell them how filthy your martinis get these days, this is gonna turn your stomach, Lenny.

• 24:50Jessie Ware?

I soak blue cheese in vodka. Have, okay, are you with me, you with me, soak blue cheese in vodka, freeze it, I get truffle oil. I infuse, so with the blue cheese infusion, that's the base, a little bit of a mousse, truffle oil, salt and pepper. About four olives and I put pickle juice. I, I wanna go out with you and drink dirty martinis, this is like. That's all I want. That's heaven. Thank you so much for this, by the way.

• 25:19Speaker 05

Thank you, I'm a little bit disappointed already that you gave honey a slightly larger portion than me, none of that was deliberate, but.

• 25:25Jessie Ware?

Did I give you a larger portion?

• 25:27Speaker 05

Yes, you gave honey a slightly larger portion than me and that was noted and it will be stored up.

• 25:31Jessie Ware?

You can have seconds, or you can have doubles on the roulette.

• 25:34Speaker 05

This looks fabulous, thank you, Jess.

• 25:36Jessie Ware?

Where were you on your last supper?

• 25:40Jessie Ware?

I'd only dealt with my beverage, filthy dirty martini, probably with blue cheese, stuffed olives. Who taught you this recipe? Oh, Instagram, I'm quite basic.

• 25:48Speaker 05

  Your mother?

• 25:49Jessie Ware?

Well, my mother, yes, but we send each other filthy dirty martini recipes because we both love like a savoury drink. Like, it took me, you know, maturing, it took my frontal lobe fully developing to learn to love.

• 26:00Speaker 05

She likes a punchy, doesn't she? She doesn't go for the sweet.

• 26:04Jessie Ware?

No, she loves like, you know, have you ever had a pickleback shot? Yeah. Yeah, it's just like pickle juice and vodka, basically, really hardcore, and I live for that. I thought it was with whiskey. Oh, it's whiskey, yeah, yeah.

• 26:14Speaker 05

For your birthday, though, she put together a kit to make extra dirty martini. In a lovely basket.

• 26:21Jessie Ware?

Very thoughtful, very sweet. Um, so, yeah, I'd have a dirty martini, I'd probably have, for starters.

• 26:29Jessie Ware?

I mean, now I know that that's an option, I would definitely do probably like a mozzarella soup. That's like a gorgeous opener, classic, cosy, comforting. But then I think for main. And this is quite indulgent, but again, if it's my last meal, not death row, but island, I would probably do maybe like a wagyu. A bit of wagyu steak. Mmm. Like, really beautifully cooked. Maybe, like, I would do it like Japanese style, like, I would want, like.

• 26:57Speaker 05

  Seared on the outside.

• 26:58Jessie Ware?

Seared on the outside, very pink in the middle. I'm not sure what I'd have with it, though. It's a hu- this is a huge question, and I feel, even though I listen to the podcast, I'm prepared.

• 27:08Speaker 05

With a witch wagyu, you need to keep it simple, you need like some nicely done, really nicely done asparagus.

• 27:12Jessie Ware?

Oh, yeah, miso asparagus. Yeah. Lots of sesame seeds. How do you do miso asparagus? Do you just? Oh, my god. Tell me. You make a little miso glaze. Oh. You mix miso, a little bit of soy sauce, a little bit of sesame oil, and then you just brush it on and you really, like, gently bake it. Do you cook a lot of Japanese? I know you, that you love.

• 27:35Speaker 05

We cook a, yeah, we do cook, um, quite a lot of food like that, and we recently got into, um, is it gotchudang?

• 27:40Jessie Ware?

  I love gotchudang.

• 27:41Speaker 05

  Gotchudang.

• 27:41Jessie Ware?

  Everybody's.

• 27:42Speaker 05

  I think it's that Korean.

• 27:43Jessie Ware?

Yeah, yeah, that's. I use into gotchudang, mob. Mob. Mob love gotchudang. So what do you? What's it like, the brown butter gotchudang pasta everybody's going all about?

• 27:53Speaker 05

You can use gotchudang pasta, but I do a very good, um, gotchudang chili.

• 27:56Jessie Ware?

  It's unbelievable.

• 27:58Speaker 05

So I cook a chili up and you add a big dollop of the old grotte d'angle with soy sauce when you're cooking the beef up. Yum. And that gives you a really rich. Does it make it very hot? Not too hot. It's more of a kind of a warm kind of, it's kind of like a gentle burn. Okay.

• 30:11Speaker 04

Jonathan, do you still read comic books?

• 30:13Speaker 05

Yeah, I still read some comics, yeah.

• 30:15Speaker 04

How many comics have you got?

• 30:16Speaker 05

  I don't know, thousands.

• 30:17Speaker 04

  Thousands?

• 30:18Speaker 05

  Tens of thousands, probably.

• 30:19Jessie Ware?

  It's really something.

• 30:20Speaker 04

  How do you catalog them?

• 30:22Speaker 05

I had an area built to keep my comics in, where there's a shelving, and it's very nicely done shelving, because you should ideally, if you've got old comics, you should store them with a backing board in acid-proof plastic with a second plastic bag on them, which is made out of Mylar plastic, which is firm and makes sure they don't get creased, because these, the older ones, it's all about condition. And so, when you've got those really old, sort after ones, you want to keep them as pristine as possible. And they're all laid out, they're all sorted in order, and I had these kind of dividers made.

• 30:51Speaker 04

In order of what? Of the character?

• 30:53Speaker 05

No, numerical order. And then I've got them alphabetized by, divided into three or four different companies. So I've got all of my EC books, which is an old comic company from the 50s up in that area, Marvel's all over that side, DC's primarily there, Dell would be up there, Foreset would be down there, Atlas Comics would be over here.

• 31:10Jessie Ware?

The thing about, like, collections is, you have to keep it so pristine, so I, do you still get pleasure out of reading them? Because it seems like you wouldn't want to touch them, because you need to keep them pristine, so then, what's the pleasure of that?

• 31:21Speaker 05

This is when the level of my obsession becomes unfortunately apparent, which is that most of the old ones I have doubles off, which are reading copies.

• 31:27Speaker 04

  Oh my god!

• 31:28Speaker 05

So I have my pristines, and I have my readers.

• 31:30Speaker 04

Do you wear gloves when you open them?

• 31:32Jessie Ware?

  It's very extreme.

• 31:33Speaker 05

If I was to go in for the old books, you should wear gloves, really, for the really old ones.

• 31:36Speaker 04

  Yeah, like cotton gloves.

• 31:37Speaker 05

Because I've got books from like 90, I've got the first ever Marvel comic, which came out in 1939, Marvel Comics number one, and that is super, super rare. But that one's been graded, and when they grade them, what they do is they put them in a sort of sealed plastic box with all the information about it, which you can't open again. And if you open it, the grading's no longer valid. So for people who deal in high-end comic books, there's that kind of thing.

• 31:58Speaker 04

  Who's your favourite superhero?

• 32:00Speaker 05

I don't really do favourites, Lenny, but I'll do one for you.

• 32:02Speaker 04

  All right, just do one.

• 32:03Speaker 05

Well, I don't know, I mean, Spider-Man is the one I grew up loving the most when I was a kid, but I loved the Fantastic Four as well. But I like some of the odd ones as well. There's a character called Herbie the Fat Fury, who is a plump fellow who sucked on lollipops and could turn his entire body into a flying saucer.

• 32:18Jessie Ware?

Oh my god, I'm going to tell my kids about that. They're obsessed with superheroes, that's a good one.

• 32:21Speaker 05

Created by a great, kind of obscure, it's called Ogden Whitney. What a great name, Ogden Whitney.

• 32:27Speaker 04

  Great, he must be American.

• 32:28Speaker 05

He's American, and almost definitely no longer with us, he would have been about 120 now.

• 32:32Jessie Ware?

  Wow.

• 32:33Speaker 04

And did Harvey used to dress up in superhero costumes?

• 32:36Speaker 05

Not really, I mean, we raised them all kind of in a somewhat gender non-specific environment, so whatever they wanted to do, I mean. I went out with, we were in Florida on holiday once and we went out with Honey and Harvey, they were both dressed as Barney the dinosaur.

• 32:49Jessie Ware?

I mean, Harvey looked like twins, because Harvey had the same length hair, I did. Harvey never cut his hair, so we both had like waist length. Is it still long now?

• 32:55Speaker 05

He's got the longest hair in the family.

• 32:58Jessie Ware?

He's got untouched, like virgin hair, waist length, stunning.

• 33:02Speaker 05

  And largely unwashed.

• 33:03Jessie Ware?

  Unwashed, yeah.

• 33:04Speaker 05

He doesn't wash it often, because he's part of that gang of thinking.

• 33:06Speaker 04

  Has he got children?

• 33:07Jessie Ware?

No, but he did just get engaged.

• 33:10Speaker 05

They're thinking of starting a family next year.

• 33:12Jessie Ware?

Which would be really nice. Honey, do you have any kind of obsessions or, like your father, and collect anything? I don't think I have anything to the same level of kind of like neurotic fixation that you do, yet.

• 33:26Speaker 05

That's not, I'm gonna push back on that in a minute, but no, I'm gonna push back on you describing it as a neurotic fixation, but carry on with your bit.

• 33:32Jessie Ware?

Okay, uh, we're gonna have a fight. Um, no, it's, I, you know what, I think if I had more space, I'd be. I would be like more of a collector slash hoarder. I love a trinket, I collect like a lot of like miniature things, I love miniatures, I. You've actually recently helped me acquire something that I've been wanting to complete for a while, which is, have you heard of the Lennox Spice Village? Oh, this is gonna change your life. Oh my god, it's nineteen eighties. Spice set, where you store your spices and they look like tiny gorgeous little cottages. And you've got, you know, you've got tarragon, you've got mustard, you've got parsley, you've got chive, but they're gorgeous. It's our little house. It's our little house. Honey, get this shit up on, I need to see.

• 34:13Speaker 05

But, but here's the thing, now be wary, because they recently, they did a wee issue of these recently, and they're not as nice.

• 34:20Speaker 04

So where did you get the original from?

• 34:23Jessie Ware?

This man right here. He completed my collection. Oh no, they are adorable.

• 34:27Speaker 05

Honey's got it in that actual, that's the one.

• 34:29Jessie Ware?

I've got that up on the wall in my house. That is adorable. It's breathtaking, it's the best thing I own. What's your best?

• 34:34Speaker 04

  Spice.

• 34:34Jessie Ware?

My, oh, you know what I'm a huge fan of? Dill.

• 34:38Speaker 04

  Oh, everyone loves dill.

• 34:39Jessie Ware?

  Everyone loves dill.

• 34:40Speaker 04

  But not dill is life.

• 34:41Speaker 05

I was cooking with dill just last night.

• 34:43Jessie Ware?

  Fresh, gotta be fresh.

• 34:44Speaker 05

I was cooking with dill just last night.

• 34:45Speaker 04

  What were you doing?

• 34:46Speaker 05

Oh, when I made your mother my special potatoes.

• 34:48Jessie Ware?

  Very good.

• 34:48Speaker 04

  What are your special potatoes?

• 34:49Speaker 05

With dill? Smashed potatoes. Yeah. Where you make the potato, you parboil fifteen minutes, jerseys, get them out, let them cool, squash them down. Squish them down. Rub them all in butter, salt and pepper, put them in the oven, forty five minutes to an hour and a half, max. Crispy, and then the scream, whip up the double cream, add the dill, add the lemon, make it sour. Don't add the lemon before you whip it, because it won't whip as easy, and then use that to dip the potatoes in.

• 35:14Speaker 04

  Sounds like.

• 35:15Speaker 05

  It's a calorific nightmare.

• 35:17Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 35:17Speaker 05

You can hear your arteries hardening as you eat it.

• 35:20Speaker 04

You're not on a diet this week.

• 35:21Speaker 05

Not at the moment, and I did that with last night, um, barbecue ribs, few sausages. Yum! Uh.

• 35:27Speaker 04

  Did you barbecue last night?

• 35:28Speaker 05

Betty had a nice vegan burgers with cheese on top, and then what did we have afterwards? Oh, Dubai chocolate.

• 35:36Jessie Ware?

Speaking of which, you did bring some over, so I feel like.

• 35:39Speaker 05

No, no, no, let, you should have that, because we've had it, you should both enjoy it.

• 35:43Jessie Ware?

But is this your first time trying it? Yeah.

• 35:45Speaker 05

Oh, you maybe try and come in.

• 35:46Jessie Ware?

I've heard a lot about it, and I've seen a lot of people recreating it.

• 35:49Speaker 05

So while Lenny is going over there to get the dessert out, which I don't think, I'll be honest with you, Lenny, I think, uh, your daughter set the bar high, and I'll be surprised if. I'll be surprised if it'll be up to, you know, up to the task, but I'm gonna push back, I wanna explain what I said when honey said neurotic fixation.

• 36:05Jessie Ware?

Oh, wow, we're going back there.

• 36:06Speaker 05

Because I have many, I have many collections.

• 36:09Speaker 04

I thought you were gonna talk about Dubai chocolate, but Carrie.

• 36:11Jessie Ware?

Me too, I was hoping for that discourse.

• 36:12Speaker 05

I have probably the largest collection of a certain specific type of Japanese toy outside of Japan. I have a collection of clothing that I've got over here, I have a collection of magazines and books from the seventies, eighties, I have all that sort of stuff. So you're not really dispelling the allegations. Here's the reason though, the actual root cause of this is far more prosaic and slightly more depressing. No, fine. Which is that coming from a family with no money. Yes. And this is so atypical, uh, I essentially, when I got a little bit of, uh, what's the word, disposable income. Yeah. Treated myself to the things that I felt a deep and simmering sense of entitlement to. Yeah. That I didn't have when I was a kid. So I wound up, for example, I really wanted this space toy when I was a kid and I did eventually get one, but for years I didn't. I wanted a Major Matt Mason.

• 36:55Speaker 05

Mattel's first man in space. Instead, I had a tiny free giveaway of the Shell petrol man from the, and I made him a space suit out of paper. And I carried him around with me until one year I finally got a Major Matt Mason. And now I have every single Major Matt Mason that you could possibly hope for. Including several of the prototypes and several of the original nineteen sixties boxes they were displayed in on stores. And delivered in stores. I now know so much about Major Matt Mason. If ever you see, if ever you see, if ever you find the orbiter, that's the one thing I'm missing. Okay. There was a prototype made.

• 37:24Jessie Ware?

I know you've been keeping an eye out, Jessie.

• 37:25Speaker 05

There was never released. I'll get my eBay, my eBay notifications. Ebay, what are you, a noob? Come on. Where do you go? I'm connected to a bunch of like-minded, essentially also tragic middle-aged men.

• 37:38Jessie Ware?

He's big on Facebook communities. He's like big part of kind of like very niche toy Facebook communities.

• 37:45Speaker 05

Do you have a diff, an alias on the Facebook groups? On the McCullough man group, I am Micro, Micro John. No, we can't, a micro, we can't say the name, otherwise everyone will know. It doesn't matter. It's not really a hidden alias. I, cause we collect Micro Nauts, which is the American version of McCullough Man. So I'm Micro John, Micro John. It's too pure. I, it's quite adorable. I never thought I'd find you so adorable, Jonathan Ross.

• 38:09Jessie Ware?

A little cherub, he's so cute.

• 38:10Speaker 05

Honey, we haven't finished your last supper yet. So can we get, we, let's take it from the Matt's Ball soup. You can have more.

• 38:17Jessie Ware?

No, that looks like heaven. Look at that lemon curd. Um, okay. So Matt's ball soup, I'm gonna do wagyu steak, very indulgent for main.

• 38:24Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 38:24Jessie Ware?

  Gorgeous.

• 38:25Speaker 05

  Buttery.

• 38:25Jessie Ware?

Buttery, melts in the mouth. And then for dessert, oh now, why do I feel like I've forgotten?

• 38:31Speaker 05

  Thank you.

• 38:32Jessie Ware?

You know what? I would do a Black Forest Gatto.

• 38:35Speaker 05

God, he's comparing, he's getting his ruler out. Jessie, as a, as a, as an unbiased witness, which of these is the, by far the largest? Hold on, I'll give you a better piece. I am just gonna take.

• 38:45Jessie Ware?

  Take that one.

• 38:46Speaker 05

  No, no, no.

• 38:46Jessie Ware?

  I will have it, Jonathan.

• 38:48Speaker 05

  No, I'm.

• 38:48Jessie Ware?

You can have a bigger piece.

• 38:49Speaker 05

No, I'm happy. I just wondered why I'm being given, what's going on?

• 38:51Jessie Ware?

  Wow.

• 38:52Speaker 05

Why am I being given the starvation visions here?

• 38:54Jessie Ware?

Well, the nicest guy in showbiz, well, the greediest guy in showbiz.

• 38:58Speaker 05

No, I just, I just want, I just want to live in a fair world. Get too much talk.

• 39:03Jessie Ware?

Micro John, calm down. Um, so wagyu beef with the miso glaze, yum. Unbelievable. And then pudding. And then I think I'd do like a classic, like Black Forest Gatto. I don't know where to get a good Black Forest Gatto.

• 39:15Speaker 05

  What was the place?

• 39:16Jessie Ware?

  Patisserie Valerie.

• 39:17Speaker 05

  Patisserie Val, Pat Val.

• 39:18Jessie Ware?

Classic Pat Val. Oh, is it really good?

• 39:20Speaker 05

Lenny, you must have gone to Pat Val, Patisserie Valley.

• 39:21Jessie Ware?

  Patisserie Valerie, yeah.

• 39:23Speaker 04

  It's up in North London.

• 39:24Speaker 05

Uh, there's one in North London, and that might have shut now, there's one in Soho still.

• 39:27Jessie Ware?

They used to have a couple, there's only one left. And then, thank you so much, this looks beautiful, Lenny. And then there's also, there's a supermarket in North London, in Belsize, called Cavanors, that has an amazing Black Forest Gatto. And I'm always like, you know what, if I have a really bad day, I'm gonna buy one of those. Like, I'm bracing myself for that. Like, if I get some bad news, I'm gonna buy a whole cake and eat it. So, Jonathan, let's go on to your last supper. What's yours?

• 39:52Speaker 05

Okay, well, unlike my daughter who's been raised travelling the world, eating fine food.

• 39:57Jessie Ware?

  Uh huh.

• 39:58Speaker 05

Everywhere. I'd be quite happy just with, uh, main course, baked potato, crisp on the outside.

• 40:04Jessie Ware?

  Beautiful.

• 40:05Speaker 05

Lots of butter, lots of cheese, beans on the side, but only if they've been cooked and had to cool down and reheated. Otherwise, otherwise the sauce is too runny.

• 40:15Jessie Ware?

Yeah, that's a very good point.

• 40:16Speaker 05

  Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.

• 40:17Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 40:17Speaker 05

Have a go with that. But I can, I, I can and will eat anything, so.

• 40:20Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, you will.

• 40:21Speaker 05

I love, like, Japanese food, so some of these are like a really good ramen.

• 40:24Jessie Ware?

Oh, my god, a good ramen.

• 40:25Speaker 05

  Ramen, daishiki, um.

• 40:27Jessie Ware?

Where do you go for your ramen in London?

• 40:30Speaker 05

There are a few places. Bone Daddy's very good, but we mainly like to buy ramen to be delivered from a, a Welsh company bizarrely. Matsuda, which is a Welsh company that does home delivery, and they, you order it up and you get, they do various different season ones, but they do the right kind of stock broth that goes with it, which is normally a bones that have been cooked down, so it's very thick.

• 40:47Jessie Ware?

  So good.

• 40:48Speaker 05

And you get the pork, the shasui pork that you just, uh, just kind of fry up for you. You get the eggs, which have been done properly, and all this soaking soy, you get the lovely noodles, and they do lots of different ones. They do a, they did a vampire one at Halloween, which was a very garlicky base, if you like garlic.

• 41:03Jessie Ware?

  Oh, that's fun.

• 41:03Speaker 05

Uh, and they do, they do vegan ones as well. We love Matsuda.

• 41:07Jessie Ware?

  I love this, I've never.

• 41:08Speaker 05

  Heard of them, great, thanks.

• 41:09Jessie Ware?

Amazing, they're big in Wales, they're really good and you get them delivered.

• 41:12Speaker 05

Brilliant. So I would happily go with that kind of thing. I would happily also go, sometimes you want simple food, Heinz tomato soup. Yeah. With nicely thick, crusty, toasty bread with butter on. It's a great choice. But I would also go with some of the more. You know, meals we've been like, I'm also a great fan of wagyu beef. I'm also a great fan of tempura and Japanese food. Where do you get your wagyu beef? It's a special. Here, we tend to go to restaurants. I tell you what we do love though, have you guys ever tried hot pot?

• 41:38Jessie Ware?

No. This would be mine, you're so right.

• 41:41Speaker 05

This would be honey's and your mum's probably.

• 41:44Jessie Ware?

  It's Chinese hot pot.

• 41:46Speaker 05

  In specifically Sichuan.

• 41:48Jessie Ware?

It's like, have you been to Heidi Lau in town?

• 41:50Speaker 05

No. You guys haven't lived, well, you've got to get out of this part of London travel. Your kids would love it. Would they?

• 41:57Jessie Ware?

So you get basically a big, and it's so lovely because it's a communal atmosphere. It's like very much. Everybody kind of like breaking bread together in a really beautiful like. Community spirit way.

• 42:07Speaker 05

You're gathered around a table, they're all over now, they're all over, but Heidler's in Leicester Square and at the O two, they've got one in in.

• 42:12Jessie Ware?

  Oh, alright, that's great.

• 42:13Speaker 05

Set around a square table with uh open space where they put the big broth that you choose. You can go with a hot rice you want or you can go with a. Uh tom yum or other ones or mushroom flavour, tomato flavour, that bubbles up and then you order from the menu, different meats and vegetables. That you then dip in with thorns, leave it in and then fish them out. Kids would love that. Is it like a sexy Benny Hanna? It's more fun than Benny Hanna and you get noodles.

• 42:36Jessie Ware?

Yeah. So you're cooking like beef and cooking vegetables.

• 42:40Speaker 05

And they do a wagyu as well.

• 42:41Jessie Ware?

  It's like a lucky dick.

• 42:42Speaker 05

So pudding, where are you going for pudding? Aye, I'm not that bothered what I have puddings or not to, I love them when they're there. But I mean, for me, it's all about the main, really. Me too. Um, but I would. Do you not, you don't drink? I don't drink. Did you ever? Yeah, I drank very, very, very successfully for many years.

• 42:58Jessie Ware?

  He loved it.

• 42:58Speaker 05

I was a good drinker. I can still drink. I mean, I'm not an alcoholic, so I could drink. But if I had a drink now, it wouldn't mean that tomorrow I would be thirsting for alcohol again, but I just choose not to. You know, it's much easier. Life is easier without it. As you get older, I find myself getting tired more easily. And so you don't have a hangover deal with you, not fit inside. And also. The only downside to not drinking is you don't really want to hang out with people as much as you used to, because you forget what a great lubricant it is socially. And when you go to a pub somewhere, everyone's sitting around drinking, well, they drink and they get another drink. Once you've had two day cokes, you really want to get home. Yeah. Um, but I don't miss it. Um. So dessert then, what desserts do I like? I like, I do like, I like trifle, I like it when your mum does an eaten mess, that's very good.

• 43:35Jessie Ware?

Yeah, she makes a lot of eaten mess.

• 43:36Speaker 05

I like, um, oh, the family, that special that your mum came up with.

• 43:41Jessie Ware?

  Margarita pie.

• 43:41Speaker 05

  Margarita pie.

• 43:42Jessie Ware?

  What's margarita pie?

• 43:43Speaker 05

Margarita pie is quite a boozy one, actually, going back to alcohol. She makes a margarita mix with lots of lime juice in, and I think she mixed the cream into it.

• 43:50Jessie Ware?

You put a whole condensed milk. Yeah. Into essentially margarita mix. You've got triple sec and tequila and lime juice.

• 43:56Speaker 05

You can taste the alcohol, you know that tang of alcohol, and you really taste the lime. And then the base is made out of digestive biscuits crushed up with salt.

• 44:04Jessie Ware?

No, no, salty pretzels. You do fifty fifty digestive biscuits, fifty fifty salt pretzels, mash them up, make them into pie crusts. Oh my god.

• 44:17Jessie Ware?

  That sounds amazing.

• 44:19Speaker 04

It's a bit like the, um, Nigella's tequila chicken. Is it Nigella? No, but it's margarita, okay.

• 44:28Speaker 05

  Without the key ingredient.

• 44:29Speaker 04

Without chicken. But I'm thinking of the flavour.

• 44:33Speaker 05

  Yeah, tequila is there.

• 44:34Jessie Ware?

Is the tequila chicken limey? That sounds amazing. Your mum just sounds so fat.

• 44:39Speaker 04

  She must be such fine.

• 44:41Jessie Ware?

She, oh my god, she's a blast, she's a dream.

• 44:42Speaker 05

She's, uh, we're lucky to have her.

• 44:44Jessie Ware?

We're so lucky. But yeah, you put it in the freezer, it's like icy, it's like a jelly shock. Honestly, it'll get you absolutely trash.

• 44:49Speaker 05

We've got some frozen up, we should have brought one over.

• 44:51Speaker 04

Tell me, when do you record your podcast?

• 44:54Speaker 05

We do the podcast normally in the week, either Wednesdays or Thursdays. That gives us a chance to catch up on TV and films during the week.

• 45:00Jessie Ware?

  What a great job.

• 45:01Speaker 04

And, and, and do they send her advanced?

• 45:04Speaker 05

Sometimes, but you know, we do sometimes get advanced stuff sent to us, and I get it sent to me for the show anyway, so often I'll, I'll watch it with Honey when I get that sent to me. But we do get sent a bunch of, but we don't, we're really happy.

• 45:14Jessie Ware?

We like to go to the cinema.

• 45:16Speaker 05

It's not necessarily about, you know, what's coming out next week, that's what, we didn't wanna do it that way. We wanna do it generally, because there's so much stuff comes out now on so many platforms. That you couldn't really do something which was everything interesting coming out next week.

• 45:27Speaker 04

Didn't like Mobland. I'm gonna recommend, it wasn't my cup of tea.

• 45:30Speaker 05

But you see, that's because it's just not, not for you. Things, I learnt over the years, I was doing film criticisms, realised, hold on, and there was more film review than criticism, because criticism is kinda. Slightly more complex, I think. But I learned over the years to accept, oh, hold on, something's just on for me. And they're not designed for me, but nor they nor do they ring my particular bell. They don't resonate with me. And that doesn't mean that they're bad in any way.

• 45:50Speaker 04

So how can you critique them if it's not for you?

• 45:52Speaker 05

You can say, for example, okay, it was my cup of tea, but I thought the performances were great, or I thought the performances were not great. I thought the script was clever, or the script was not as sophisticated or as well wrought as it should have been. The music was this, the direction, you can look at something and you can appreciate the technical side of it. As well as seeing what it works as a piece of storytelling.

• 46:10Jessie Ware?

Substance, I, so many people had so many different views. And did you, did you review this one? We did, and I loved it. I really enjoyed it, but I think what I enjoyed about it was more like the camera shots and the sound um designing it. And like, of course, like, you know, the resurrection of Danny and all of that, I loved it. It went, it was way too long. It was kind of ridiculous at the end, but I kind of enjoyed it and it was entertaining, but everyone was like, you want to talk about the sound, you know, but I thought it was really clever with the close ups with Dennis Quaid and you be and he and like the grotesqueness of his eating. I enjoyed all of that.

• 46:42Speaker 05

Yeah, well, actually, if you like that, you should see Carly Fager's earlier film Revenge, which you can see on Netflix. There's another scene where there's someone eating something and there's a close up of his mouth. And I think she understandably has a problem with men in that respect, but it makes him look even more monstrous and even more predatory and foul. Cause it's a close up and he's eating chocolate with nuts in and you see inside his mouth, it's all been chewed up and messed.

• 47:03Jessie Ware?

Did you, did you, did you enjoy this?

• 47:05Speaker 05

I really liked the substance. I thought it was too long and I thought it was a film of uneven tone because the third part felt to me like a kind of slightly trashier trauma movie. And I don't think you needed quite as much of monstrous collapsing at the end. But I really liked it. I love the idea behind it. I think it was a viewer of filmmaking. I think she's an amazing director and I think the performances, both Margaret and Demi in particular, amazing.

• 47:27Jessie Ware?

So what, if people haven't heard Reel Talk, um, what, I mean, I mean, you, you, it's weekly, isn't it? And then you do bonus apps and you're talking about everything from like adolescence on Netflix, you're talking about series and film. Um, and if one thing that, I mean, apart from Hacks, which we all love.

• 47:46Speaker 05

  Hacks is amazing.

• 47:47Jessie Ware?

Just so glorious. And you're so right when you say people don't.

• 47:51Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 47:51Jessie Ware?

  Know about it.

• 47:53Speaker 04

They are? They're doing the fourth season. I get deadline on Instagram. And they said they're doing a spin off from Hacks. No.

• 48:02Jessie Ware?

  Really?

• 48:02Speaker 04

I don't know what it's going to be and it's going to be nastier.

• 48:05Speaker 05

Oh, well, I wish it were, because I love the kind of the tone of Hacks.

• 48:09Speaker 04

  It's her.

• 48:09Speaker 05

It's not that, but she's mean in a really oddly kind of lovable way.

• 48:13Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 48:14Speaker 05

You know, because you know where it's coming from.

• 48:14Jessie Ware?

  Like you. They're quite us.

• 48:17Speaker 05

Exactly like us. Um, but now we talk about ourselves a little bit about our lives, but hopefully not too much. We mainly just talk about the stuff that we have either wanted to see or were forced to see.

• 48:25Speaker 04

Do you ever get asked to have someone on who's promoting something?

• 48:28Speaker 05

Well, we do get, we might do some.

• 48:29Jessie Ware?

We've had a couple of people, we're thinking of branching out into that. I think it would have to be the right person and we'd have to be like fully on board with it because we.

• 48:37Speaker 05

  I'm not as keen.

• 48:38Jessie Ware?

  We're so honest.

• 48:39Speaker 05

Well, frankly, this bench is quite uncomfortable, I'll be honest with you. You put me in the children, this is where your kids are.

• 48:42Jessie Ware?

I'm so sorry. The wipe down, the wipe down bench.

• 48:46Speaker 05

They thought we were gonna make a mess, honey. They put us where the children go. And Lenny tried to put a bib on me earlier.

• 48:52Jessie Ware?

It's, I, I just think it's such a great podcast. But I mean, I, I, I watch probably more series than I do films. And I think there's such romance with wa- watching films still, still. And I feel like my attention span is lacking that I almost.

• 49:07Speaker 05

  Do you though?

• 49:08Jessie Ware?

  What?

• 49:08Speaker 05

Do you put your phone away when you're watching a film? Well, that's what you've got to do.

• 49:11Jessie Ware?

  I know.

• 49:12Speaker 05

If you can get yourself in the habit of doing that, you go to the cinema, turn it off. Don't even leave it on with the sound on. Turn it off because then in that moment where there's a momentary blip in your attention on the film, something is maybe dragging a little too long or not quite as engaging. And you can't just reach for the phone and have it come on me. You then have to go, oh, I've got to turn it on. I'm waiting for someone to put my passport in. And I think that's it. I, I wish more people would just turn off their phone when they go to the cinema for their own sake.

• 49:35Speaker 04

But I thought you meant to, it says.

• 49:37Jessie Ware?

Well, I'm not for your phone.

• 49:38Speaker 05

  They put it on silent.

• 49:39Jessie Ware?

Um, what would we, what would we find in your fridges that will always be there? Come rain, come shine.

• 49:47Speaker 05

Well, your mum is still angry with me about our fridge.

• 49:49Jessie Ware?

  Why? Oh my god, don't.

• 49:50Speaker 05

So when we had the kitchen redone about fifteen years ago, we had all the stuff built in and then the fridge went kaput. And they don't make that fridge anymore. So we couldn't just take the front of it and put it in. Couldn't find a fridge that would fit there. So in the end, we were trying to find one and Jane didn't want to change what's outside. We have this nice wood. I said, let's just redo the kitchen, you know, no, no, no. And so we finally got, some guys said, no, we can find this fridge will fit there. And I said, okay. And then they said, no, no, that fridge is also defunct now. I said, okay. So I stopped consulting Jane. I said, just find a fridge, put it in. We put a fridge in, but it's only a. Two thirds as deep as the fridge was in there before. And now every, almost every time your mom was a fridge, this fucking fridge.

• 50:26Jessie Ware?

  It's like a minibar.

• 50:29Speaker 05

Yeah, but it's mainly only normally it's only the two of us. We don't need to fully up with stuff, but anyway, so and I said to her, I said, can I ask you? Please, I'll listen one more time. Please, can we never ever discuss this fridge again? Or or let's whip it out.

• 50:43Jessie Ware?

What would you find in your little fridge though?

• 50:45Speaker 05

We would find grotte d'ong. There would be some booze on the top shelf for people to come and drink, as well as some like non-alcoholic wine. Spritzy drinks that are nice and and and and not boozy. There would be, uh, there's always some fruit and veg, not fruit, but there's always some veg in there as well. There's normally, Jane and I, because we're both kind of like trying to keep our weight somewhere, we often have ready meals during the week as well.

• 51:05Jessie Ware?

  What which which provide?

• 51:06Speaker 05

I think she gets some from Ocado on the shop, but there's a pizza, one of, one of the, M and S do this kind of like really low-cal pizza, which is gorgeous. And it's so you bang it in the oven for eight, nine minutes, it's done. Things for a pizza, it's really lovely. Have that with something on the side, I'll put a few more tomatoes on top. But then when I cook for the day, I'll do something for Jane, I'll just order some stuff up that I wanna cook her that night. And she'll do stuff for me in the same way. So we've got, normally there's, there's normally some fish in there, there's normally some meat in there. There's normally eggs in there. It's all the basic stuff there. The only stuff that's out of the ordinary is there's some stuff like, there's normally a small jug of booze with blue cheese soaking in it. For reasons that you now know.

• 51:42Jessie Ware?

Martinis, yeah. Yes. She's always got that on the go. Do you live nearby? Yeah, I live about like three tube stops away, so I'm never far from home. And I visit a lot and clearly I'm very codependent with my parents, which is a gift. We love this. So it's it's a gift. What what's in your fridge? I recently read. We know about the Spice Village now. My Spice Village, purely ornamental, which is criminal, actually. You're not actually gonna put spices in it? It's a collector's item. You are, you are your father's daughter. I know, I use gloves to handle it. Um, no, I do not use gloves actually, but um.

• 52:18Speaker 05

I've got vintage stuff that I definitely use, like my Walkmans I use. I go out with a Walkman with a cassette in it occasionally, treat myself. Bit of a cure banging out on the old C ninety cassette, beautiful.

• 52:29Jessie Ware?

Oh my god, that's so funny.

• 52:31Speaker 04

So what's in your, what's in your fridge?

• 52:33Jessie Ware?

I recently really got into um like meal prepping ramen eggs.

• 52:37Speaker 05

Junkin' eggs, I'm getting, I'm getting fed them on my algorithms too.

• 52:44Jessie Ware?

  Oh my god.

• 52:45Speaker 04

  Are they really good?

• 52:46Jessie Ware?

I make like a full like pan of eggs at the, on a Sunday. Marinate them, eat them on rice during the week, because I always have kimchi in my fridge. So I like have a big thing kimchi, I'll do kimchi, I'll do my egg, I'll do like, sometimes I'll make like. You know like Korean banchan, like the little side dishes that you have? I'll make like.

• 53:03Speaker 04

You could be talking in Korean.

• 53:08Jessie Ware?

It's, as well make like banchan spinach and then I'll have like, just basically like stuff that I can easily throw together, so I've got a healthy meal throughout the week.

• 53:16Speaker 05

I tell you what's else in our fridge, remember when mum did that lovely salad for the Christmas with pickled cranberries?

• 53:23Speaker 05

And they're gorgeous because they're sweet but also got a kind of pickly vibe to them.

• 53:29Jessie Ware?

And before we let you go, um would you both give us a nostalgic taste? A nostalgic taste? Or scent or like something that can transport you back somewhere.

• 53:39Speaker 05

Do you want me to go first? I've got one in my head already, which is, I'm sure you've been, people have shared this before, butterscotch angel delight.

• 53:48Speaker 04

Now someone else, uh your manager loves angel delight.

• 53:52Jessie Ware?

Grace Dent, I remember when she was promoting her book, she sent everyone angel delight, but is it the smell or is the taste?

• 53:58Speaker 05

No, the flavour of butterscotch angel delight was kind of uniquely sewn, yeah, but I don't mind synthetic, I love, I tell you what I love, I love a fake grape flavour.

• 54:06Jessie Ware?

  I love fake grape.

• 54:08Speaker 04

You get that in the States more than anywhere.

• 54:13Speaker 05

Which is a soda that has a grape flavour, which is so synthetic and yet so delicious.

• 54:18Jessie Ware?

Um honey, what would be your nostalgic taste? My nostalgic taste, ooh taste. Okay, have you got a smell? I've got a smell.

• 54:26Speaker 04

  Yeah, you can do that.

• 54:27Jessie Ware?

Uh, growing up, you and mum always used to drink hazelnut coffee, like love a flavoured coffee.

• 54:35Jessie Ware?

And to this day, like a hazelnut coffee, I'll, I'll have it because I buy the grind pods, love them, they do a hazelnut.

• 54:39Speaker 05

But one of the reasons I used to do that was just to make the house smell of hazelnut, it was such a nice smell.

• 54:43Jessie Ware?

Such a nice smell. Where are you getting it from? Is it like Starbucks?

• 54:46Speaker 05

Well, we have a house in Florida, and so they spent a lot of summers in Florida when they were kids. We we bought it. We didn't have any money, to be honest with you, but Jane came into a little bit of money, and I thought, why would I then pay off the mortgage, which we'd still have a mortgage. They won't change their life, but because we loved going to Disney so much, I said, look, I was doing a job for someone that they were paying me in airline flights. And I thought, well, if we had a place to go and I've got these flights bent up, we could still go to Disney with the kids, even if I'm not working, because my career was very patchy, as most people in TV is for a while. And so I thought that would be a nice thing. So we we have this. It's a very modest little place. It's a place which is not dissimilar to Ipswich. You know, but it's in Florida, and so you could go there, stay free and go and see, go to Disney World.

• 55:22Jessie Ware?

Love the Ipswich of Florida. It's an amazing comparison.

• 55:26Speaker 05

  It's not a glamorous place.

• 55:27Jessie Ware?

It is on a highway. It's on the freeway. You bring the glamour. We bring the glamour, but but that we used to go to the big Publix supermarket, like it's like Publix with an X, which is like. Publix, yeah. Love Publix, huge industrial sized supermarket, and you can get your own coffee beans, and they had huge bags hanging on it.

• 55:45Speaker 05

It's interesting, whenever you go somewhere different, and now we've been to America, but still, because it's just slightly different culturally when you go somewhere like that, it's exciting. Going to a supermarket is exciting when you're in Holland. I used to love it when I went to Europe. When I was a young adult and you'd go into like in Spain somewhere, you go to a supermarket, everything's different. All the biscuits are different.

• 56:01Jessie Ware?

Do you do you think you'll keep the place in Florida?

• 56:03Speaker 05

Well, we've kept it so far. So, yeah, for now, I mean, we've held on to stuff like that because we haven't been for a while. We haven't been since before Covid, because we couldn't travel during Covid. And then because my oldest got ill, we couldn't travel for a while. So we didn't, you know, we we didn't travel at all for a long while. We only recently started travelling again. Um, and so, but I might go back this year. Betty is uh much better than they were, but still sometimes needs a wheelchair. You know, because so not not certainly not a hundred percent, but certainly, you know, shows a kind of very cheerful spirit for all, and he's definitely moving in the right direction.

• 56:36Jessie Ware?

Jonathan and Honey, it's been so lovely having you over.

• 56:39Speaker 04

  So lovely.

• 56:40Speaker 05

Well, it's been lovely meeting you. I mean, the food, I'll be honest with you.

• 56:42Speaker 04

  Was not up to much.

• 56:43Speaker 05

We could stop somewhere on the way back though.

• 56:44Jessie Ware?

  Don't listen to this man.

• 56:46Speaker 05

No, I saw a Five Guys just round the corner. We could just go via that.

• 56:49Speaker 04

Did your dad tease you throughout your life?

• 56:51Jessie Ware?

My entire life, it's kept me very humble.

• 56:54Speaker 04

It's kept you on guard, I should think.

• 56:56Jessie Ware?

  Honestly.

• 56:57Speaker 04

  Ready for it.

• 56:57Jessie Ware?

Kept me in therapy is what it's done. No, but guys, thank you so much for having us.

• 57:01Speaker 05

  Thank you, Beth.

• 57:01Speaker 04

  It's been incredible.

• 57:03Speaker 05

When the food was spectacular, lasagna was superb.

• 57:05Jessie Ware?

  Thank you.

• 57:06Speaker 05

Gorgeous. It was the sauce that made it for me. I don't know what extra you put in the sauce. Was that where the jalapeno was hiding?

• 57:10Jessie Ware?

There was a little jalapeno that had been there and then there was like jalapeno on oil, but probably a lot of cream and cheese. I mean, look, Easter Belle Fritsch is an amazing chef. You should definitely get her cookbook.

• 57:18Speaker 05

Was that the bescam? Did you use the bescam?

• 57:19Jessie Ware?

No, but that's it. It's just double cream and cheese. Like, so it's an easier... Actually, it was very...

• 57:24Speaker 04

I don't think we need to hear about that.

• 57:26Speaker 05

The pudding was fabulous. Your rouleau will be spoken of for many years to come.

• 57:31Jessie Ware?

  It was breathtaking.

• 57:32Speaker 05

  Gorgeous.

• 57:46Jessie Ware?

I loved having Honey and Jonathan on the podcast. They are fab. I'm obsessed with Honey. She's such a gorgeous girl and she's really lovely and she's so patient with her dad teasing her the whole... All of us. To be fair, he teased all of us.

• 58:02Speaker 04

  They adore each other though.

• 58:04Jessie Ware?

Mum, what did you think of the prawn lasagna?

• 58:06Speaker 04

  It was delicious.

• 58:07Jessie Ware?

  See?

• 58:08Speaker 04

It does sit there though a bit.

• 58:09Jessie Ware?

I think that was the cream on the cream though. I think the rouleau was potentially the straw that broke the camel's back with lactose intolerant people. The rouleau was delicious though, Mum. But yeah, it's really sitting.

• 58:22Speaker 04

Much taller than I thought he'd be.

• 58:24Jessie Ware?

  Oh.

• 58:25Speaker 04

  Yeah, he was quite...

• 58:26Jessie Ware?

Jonathan Ross was a little man.

• 58:28Speaker 04

No, I didn't think he was as tall as that. Very majestic, very clever, very funny. And I just loved all his interest in the comic books and...

• 58:39Jessie Ware?

How does he fit so many interests into his... I feel like it must have been a very fun house to grow up in.

• 58:46Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 58:47Jessie Ware?

And next time we'll have Jane.

• 58:49Speaker 04

She might bring her Guinness pie.

• 58:51Jessie Ware?

Forget about the, well, no Guinness pie she can do and then she can do the margarita.

• 58:55Speaker 04

  Dessert.

• 58:56Jessie Ware?

Dessert, wow. Thank you to Honey and Jonathan Ross. Their podcast, Reel Talk, is out.

• 59:01Speaker 04

  And it's really good.

• 59:03Jessie Ware?

  It's so good.

• 59:05Speaker 04

  Really good.

• 59:05Jessie Ware?

It's really good. Thank you so much and we'll see you next week.
