It’s rock star therapy with a twist… and let’s just say, Jessie’s girl really missed out. • 1:15Bill Maher?

My best friend, Doug Davidson. And bold and beautiful. Yeah, so... Were you on that? Yeah. Because you're very bold and you're very beautiful.

• 1:25Bill Maher?

That's right, Rick, I grow my own. I grow my own and I smoke my own. Because that's what real men do. That's what real men... Let me tell you something.

• 1:36Bill Maher?

Hey, Rick. Hey. Oh. Does that really play? Yeah. How are you, huh? Nice to meet you. Thank you, you too. Um... It's not in tune, though, couldn't it? I just tuned it. Oh, you just tuned it?

• 1:52Bill Maher?

  Oh, wow.

• 1:55Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:57Bill Maher?

You're the first person, I've had so many musicians, you're the first one who I think picked that up and thought to play it.

• 2:04Speaker 05

  Uh, yeah.

• 2:05Bill Maher?

I guess when you see a guitar, it's like, you know, you can't.

• 2:08Speaker 05

  You gotta pick it up.

• 2:09Bill Maher?

  You gotta, like women.

• 2:11Speaker 05

  Yeah, I know.

• 2:13Speaker 05

I was intrigued by the, uh, the doll over there, that's wild.

• 2:17Bill Maher?

  That's from, uh, my friend.

• 2:19Speaker 05

I had to check the vagina, I'm sorry.

• 2:20Bill Maher?

Uh, everybody, you think you're the first person to check that vagina? I have a list of people who've checked that vagina, mostly women.

• 2:30Bill Maher?

But that's from my friend Whitney Cummings, you know Whitney, the comic?

• 2:33Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 2:34Bill Maher?

Oh, she's the best, and she, that doll is worth a hundred and seventy-five thousand dollars.

• 2:38Speaker 05

Yeah, that's what he was saying.

• 2:39Bill Maher?

And she gave it to me, she did a whole special about.

• 2:41Speaker 05

So, why did she have it made?

• 2:43Bill Maher?

Well, she, she did a whole special where they made the Whitney, you know, uh, robot doll. She had a lot of material about that idea of, and I think it's, first of all, she's a brilliant comic and it's a brilliant special. But it's also so, um, in the news with AI and everything.

• 3:03Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 3:04Bill Maher?

And, you know, we are moving very soon to a time when we will be fucking the robots.

• 3:10Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 3:11Bill Maher?

  What?

• 3:11Speaker 05

  The, I.

• 3:13Bill Maher?

  No doubt, right?

• 3:14Speaker 05

The, uh, the, the industry that makes the most money out of a new, any new technology is a porn industry.

• 3:22Bill Maher?

Yes, everything, everything immediately goes to porn.

• 3:26Speaker 05

  Goes to porn.

• 3:26Bill Maher?

We're old enough to remember when the internet came about.

• 3:29Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 3:29Bill Maher?

And it was gonna be this super highway of knowledge, you had knowledge of my balls, you know.

• 3:35Speaker 05

I opened up my, my son's computer when he was fourteen, and there was a little square of video and I clicked on it. And there was this girl getting fucked in the ass, like, like right here.

• 3:44Bill Maher?

  Right.

• 3:44Speaker 05

And I hadn't seen that, I was like thirty till I saw something like that, and my boy was like fourteen.

• 3:50Bill Maher?

You were thirty before you saw something like that?

• 3:53Speaker 05

Yeah, yeah. Well, I grew up in Australia.

• 3:55Bill Maher?

But not in real, in real life, I'm guessing.

• 3:57Speaker 05

  Oh, no, no, no, no.

• 3:58Bill Maher?

Of course, I, I saw people getting fucked in the ass in my room. No, it's not on the computer.

• 4:03Speaker 05

  Hardcore porn.

• 4:05Bill Maher?

  You saw it for real?

• 4:06Speaker 05

Yeah. This was, uh, this is my rum I have with, uh, Sammy Hagan, Beach Bar Rum.

• 4:11Bill Maher?

Oh, Sammy was here, he was, yeah, you're in business with him?

• 4:14Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 4:15Bill Maher?

  Oh, cool.

• 4:15Speaker 05

We have the Beach Bar Rum together.

• 4:17Bill Maher?

How did that come about, you and Sammy would join forces?

• 4:22Speaker 05

Well, I did, I recorded his song, uh, I've Done Everything For You.

• 4:26Bill Maher?

  Yeah.

• 4:26Speaker 05

  Back in the

• 4:27Bill Maher?

  Sure.

• 4:28Speaker 05

Early eighties and it was kind of the first, it was the first big hit he'd really ever had that like that, you know, and um.

• 4:35Bill Maher?

  Right.

• 4:35Speaker 05

And he was kind of pissed off because he had the single and didn't do anything and then I had the single and it was a hit. So he was kind of, he was very mixed about it, you know, but uh, we've been, really been friends. He helped me get on the road. He was awesome.

• 4:50Bill Maher?

And why do you think yours hit and his didn't?

• 4:52Speaker 05

  Because I'm cuter.

• 4:53Bill Maher?

Well, we know that. That's really, you think the whole thing?

• 4:56Speaker 05

  No, um, honestly, um.

• 4:59Bill Maher?

  It could be.

• 5:00Speaker 05

No, I hope, I hope not. Jesus, my career is built on that. I'm fucked.

• 5:04Bill Maher?

  Well, it matters.

• 5:05Speaker 05

Yeah, no, I, I get it.

• 5:06Bill Maher?

But you're right. It's a record you're listening to. It, it's in the groove.

• 5:10Speaker 05

You know, it was, it followed Jessie's Girl, which was a really huge record. So the door was already, you know, kind of, they're already looking in my direction kind of thing.

• 5:18Bill Maher?

Well, that makes me think of the song, I've Heard It Through The Grapevine, because Gladys Knight put it out and had a mild hit.

• 5:27Speaker 05

  Oh, wow.

• 5:28Bill Maher?

And then Marvin Gaye put it out a, next year and had a massive number one smash.

• 5:35Speaker 05

Yeah, it's, I don't know, it's uh, I mean, what makes a hit record, you know, really? If we all, if we knew, we'd write a thousand.

• 5:45Bill Maher?

I was down in Boca last week talking to Billy Joel about Everything Musical, but certainly this subject came up and, you know, someone who, as he was, you know, so much better than what the critics gave him credit for. And I was just saying, you know, the stupidest thing I think in the world is a music review. Because you can't describe whether, to someone, whether they're going to like a song or not.

• 6:11Speaker 05

And I, and I have, I, I was so, I bought, for a couple of years, I bought the top ten LA, you know, the, the right, whoever the guy was. These are my top ten records. And they were horrible. They were horrible.

• 6:23Bill Maher?

It is the surest way to have a shitty record collection. Because record reviewers, they don't, first of all,

• 6:30Speaker 05

  They wanna be cool.

• 6:31Bill Maher?

They wanna be cool. They wanna tell you what's important. I don't give a shit what's important in music. I care what's good.

• 6:38Speaker 05

  What turns me on.

• 6:40Bill Maher?

  Right.

• 6:40Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 6:41Bill Maher?

  What I like to hear.

• 6:43Speaker 05

And they, they, they gave me a lot of shit with, about my stuff. I mean, I was, they were merciless. I'm, one record I had out, I got, the LA guy reviewed it and he said, he listed the songs and what they're about and he goes, guilt, nothing, nothing, guilt, nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing. And it was like stuff like, you know, I was.

• 7:02Bill Maher?

  And you're still selling out.

• 7:03Speaker 05

  It was really frustrating.

• 7:04Bill Maher?

  The Hollywood Bowl.

• 7:05Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 7:05Bill Maher?

  I mean, that's the ultimate.

• 7:06Speaker 05

  Well, he's dead.

• 7:07Bill Maher?

He's dead and you're selling out the Hollywood Bowl. Well, you know what they always said about critics? They're, they're like, eunuchs in a harem. They're surrounded by it, they just can't.

• 7:20Speaker 05

They can't do a fucking thing.

• 7:21Bill Maher?

They can't do it. So, here's to fuck them.

• 7:25Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 7:26Bill Maher?

I've had the same thing in my career comedy wise. They just, they just don't. They don't, I mean, it's just not a job you would gravitate toward. I mean, look, there have been a few and far between good critics who were constructive and said things that, um, registered and

• 7:45Speaker 05

  Right.

• 7:45Bill Maher?

even certain artists have said, yeah, I, I read that and I think that was right and.

• 7:49Speaker 05

  Right.

• 7:49Bill Maher?

Um, but in general, they're just bitchy assholes.

• 7:53Speaker 05

They're pissed off that they didn't get to do it.

• 7:56Bill Maher?

And, and there's no, you know how sometimes they get the job? They're just on the paper, doing something else.

• 8:03Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 8:03Bill Maher?

There's no, uh, effort to like find a credential. It's like, oh, this guy used to, uh, write the restaurant review?

• 8:10Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 8:11Bill Maher?

Oh, have him go see a play. No, really, they, they do that. Unapologetically and.

• 8:17Speaker 05

  That's awful.

• 8:18Bill Maher?

It's like, hey, everybody's got an asshole.

• 8:19Speaker 05

I wish I'd known that. I mean, I thought these were guys, you know, that like, were seriously into music and, uh, fucking, anyway, I want to show you this. I hear you're, you're a Beatle fan.

• 8:30Bill Maher?

  Yeah.

• 8:31Speaker 05

This is a copy, but I, I have the biggest personal handwritten lyrics Beatle collection.

• 8:36Bill Maher?

  Oh, wow.

• 8:37Speaker 05

That's If I Fell and John Fan.

• 8:39Bill Maher?

  Wow.

• 8:40Speaker 05

Um, written on, on a, on a, on a anniversary card to Paul. You can turn it over as the anniversary card. And on the way to their, their first show at the Ed Sullivan Theater, on the plane.

• 8:56Bill Maher?

Sending a happy Valentine with wishes fond and true From one whose heart will always hold such lovely thoughts of you.

• 9:03Speaker 05

  Yeah, they didn't write that.

• 9:05Bill Maher?

But why is John sending Paul a Valentine with hearts?

• 9:08Speaker 05

Not from John, I think it says Jay, I think it's from Jay, maybe from Jay Nash or maybe to Paul. He probably said, has anyone got any paper, I wanna finish the song.

• 9:17Bill Maher?

Cool, oh wow, that's it, this is an awesome artifact.

• 9:23Bill Maher?

Yeah, and it's pretty much, as I read these lyrics, how it was recorded.

• 9:28Speaker 05

Yeah, there's a couple of, I mean, I have some first drafts that are pretty amazing, but um.

• 9:33Bill Maher?

  That's awesome.

• 9:34Speaker 05

Yeah, you can have that if you want, I know you have stuff.

• 9:36Bill Maher?

Really? Oh, thank you, that's awesome. I need a double side, I need to put it on a window so you can see.

• 9:42Speaker 05

I don't know why I was thinking it wouldn't make it a double sided.

• 9:44Bill Maher?

Thank you very much, that's great. I mean, John, in the early years, of course, John was the.

• 9:51Speaker 05

  The primary driver.

• 9:52Bill Maher?

  Yes, and then it switched.

• 9:54Speaker 05

Yeah, which how amazing is that really, you know?

• 9:57Bill Maher?

  What?

• 9:58Speaker 05

Four guys from Liverpool, one carries this amazing band and the other one picks it up. It's like, I still can't believe they're like a real band almost, it was so staggering what they did.

• 10:10Bill Maher?

Yeah, I mean, it wasn't like John wasn't doing anything, but he definitely was not the mover after a while, you're right.

• 10:16Speaker 05

  No, he lost interest.

• 10:18Bill Maher?

And he lost some, some interest and.

• 10:20Speaker 05

And he's also, I think he's also had a problem with Paul having all the hits.

• 10:24Bill Maher?

  That was always my theory.

• 10:25Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 10:26Bill Maher?

That Paul got the A side.

• 10:27Speaker 05

Jealousy, dude, I've been in bands and I understand that jealousy.

• 10:30Bill Maher?

No, I understand, it's not even just jealousy, it's like if you have a healthy competition and you're writing great songs and still losing.

• 10:38Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 10:38Bill Maher?

I said this to Billy, you know, if you write Revolution and it doesn't get the A side because the other guy wrote Hey Jude, and you write Strawberry Fields and the other guy gets the A side with Penny Lane, you're like, I'm, I'm not winning this competition, I don't seem to be able to. I don't think that's the only reason he got out of the band.

• 10:57Speaker 05

But I think it was in there and it's not really discussed.

• 11:00Bill Maher?

But his peak was this, this is from Hard Day's Night.

• 11:04Speaker 05

  Mm-hmm.

• 11:05Bill Maher?

  He

• 11:06Speaker 05

  Incredible.

• 11:06Bill Maher?

Wrote almost that whole album. That was his, Paul wrote Can't Buy Me Love on that album, which was a big hit for them. But most of the rest, I feel like, uh, that was 1964, of course, their first movie, and I feel like that was John's. Peak of interest like, okay, we got to the top or most thing. Yeah, and this is, and after that, um, I mean, the next year you have help. I need some, I'm in trouble, you know, it devolved very quickly.

• 11:39Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 11:39Bill Maher?

But not the, the, the music, the, the music kept coming even to the very end.

• 11:44Speaker 05

But he did lose, he did, he changed, he took it more personally and, and deeper than I think, and darker than any of them.

• 11:53Bill Maher?

Well, he also felt the need to, uh, or the compulsion to work out his personal problems. After the Beatles were as successful as they could be. I don't think it was a conscious decision like, oh, okay, well now we're super successful, I'm gonna start on me. But that's just how it went.

• 12:10Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 12:10Bill Maher?

  I mean.

• 12:11Speaker 05

  You have time.

• 12:12Bill Maher?

You have time and you also just have a psychic need, I mean.

• 12:16Speaker 05

  Absolutely.

• 12:17Bill Maher?

Getting together with Yoko, whatever that was, but I mean, it was a lot, come on, about losing mom. You know, they both lost their mother, which was what their original bond, they both lost their mother.

• 12:30Speaker 05

I didn't know she did, I didn't know that side of it with her. Oh, you're talking about Paul and John, yeah, that was the bond, right?

• 12:36Bill Maher?

Yeah, and they handled it very differently.

• 12:38Speaker 05

  Yeah, yeah.

• 12:39Bill Maher?

  Um, and, uh.

• 12:41Speaker 05

Paul was, was, was social, John was more, you know, deep looking in and.

• 12:46Bill Maher?

Yeah, I think he, you know, he wasn't a recluse at all, but he did, he, he just, uh, you know, had to like get to the bottom of him, I mean, he and Yoko, first thing they did when the Beatles broke up is they came out here and did that Jack, Jack La, no, what's his name, Jan Lov therapy, it was scream.

• 13:07Speaker 05

  Oh, screaming therapy, yeah.

• 13:08Bill Maher?

I mean, there was, there was a lot of screaming. I mean, the therapy was screaming, Yoko was always screaming, you know, I mean, maybe it has something to do with the fact that when they were at their height, everybody was screaming at them, it was always screaming.

• 13:22Speaker 05

See the video of John with, with Chuck Berry and Yoko, and they're doing some song. And John obviously says, I want Yoko to sing too, so they're doing Bye Bye Johnny or something, right? And so she, they're rocking away, and suddenly gives Yoko the nod, and she sits up to the mic and it's on Chuck, and she starts singing, he goes. Just real brief, like it doesn't look over you just go.

• 13:44Bill Maher?

About Chuck Berry did. Chuck. He just reacted to Yoko, yeah. But as you say, you know, I've never been in a band, but it is so obvious that the issues are, and of course, this is also what people in bands have told me, two things, why they hate each other and always break up and are always on the verge of breaking up. You didn't like my song and you took that girl.

• 14:11Speaker 05

Oh, man, um, that's absolutely true.

• 14:15Bill Maher?

  Yeah.

• 14:16Speaker 05

  I was in a band.

• 14:17Bill Maher?

  How could it not be?

• 14:18Speaker 05

No, I know. I was in a band and.

• 14:20Bill Maher?

I doubt if a lot of them took girls from you.

• 14:24Bill Maher?

I don't imagine you were on the losing end of that a lot.

• 14:27Speaker 05

Oh, I was occasionally. But I was in a band and, and, uh, and I found out after I left that one of the guys really like, thought I was trying to take over the band and hated my songs and it was like, it was actually really, um, that really hurt.

• 14:48Bill Maher?

Yeah, what, so what, what, what do you do when, when the band gets to that point? I mean, we, we see Oasis is back out on tour.

• 14:56Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 14:56Bill Maher?

Obviously, uh, the Eagles famously had their Hell freezes over tour because they said they would never work.

• 15:03Speaker 05

  Look at the Who.

• 15:05Bill Maher?

  The Who. Yes.

• 15:08Speaker 05

They've had fistfights and they're back on the road again, you know?

• 15:11Bill Maher?

Eagles had a, a physical altercation on stage and so did just Dave Navarro.

• 15:18Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 15:18Bill Maher?

With somebody, I mean, when it gets to the point when you're fist fighting on stage.

• 15:23Speaker 05

That's pretty awful. It's kind of like a marriage fighting in public. It's like, we know what goes on, but we don't want to see it, you know?

• 15:30Bill Maher?

Well, it's like being at the office and going over to the copier, which is clocking, you know, bill from accounting.

• 15:38Bill Maher?

This feud, this beef that was simmering around the break room until you just fucking punched him. That doesn't happen in real life.

• 15:50Speaker 05

No, I'm sure there was drugs involved and you know, and you get to a certain point in fame where it, things become unrealistic, what, you know, how you view things. I mean, it's very hard to. I had a terrible experience in nineteen eighty-five when I'd kind of thought I'd kind of got a lot of my dreams had come true, you know. And I remember walking around the pool of this beautiful house I had in Malibu and I just had my first son born. I'm going, I am more miserable than I've ever been in my life.

• 16:31Bill Maher?

  Really?

• 16:32Speaker 05

And it was, it was, you know, from, um, I thought this would fix me.

• 16:39Bill Maher?

  What was wrong with you?

• 16:40Speaker 05

Well, I thought I was depressed. I was, I just had a lot of, really didn't like myself, really. A lot of self doubt and a lot of self loathing and, and um, it's exactly right. What was wrong with me? I know it was like.

• 16:53Bill Maher?

What? No, I'm asking, what was?

• 16:55Speaker 05

Yeah, I was depression. I was, I've had depression, depression since I was a kid.

• 16:59Bill Maher?

Just from, okay, this, in my view, and of course, this is not like a medical, but just.

• 17:06Speaker 05

I'm sure it's very well informed.

• 17:08Bill Maher?

  Well, it's.

• 17:08Speaker 05

  You are very well informed.

• 17:10Bill Maher?

It's common, thank you. Common sense tells me, and for my own life, there are two kinds of depression. One is what I would call logical depression. I've had this. I've been depressed and when I was depressed, it's because my life sucked.

• 17:27Speaker 05

  Right.

• 17:27Bill Maher?

It was logical. I should have been depressed. I was a huge fucking loser. Then there's the other kind of depression, which really doesn't come from anything. Uh, uh, it's very often just a lack of a certain chemical in your brain. It's all what you're putting in the test tube. That's what you had?

• 17:45Speaker 05

I had that, and I have that. Um, I take, you know, I take some medication for it, but.

• 17:51Bill Maher?

But it's not because your family was bad to you?

• 17:53Speaker 05

No, no, I had a great upbringing. It was nothing to do with that. I, I.

• 17:57Bill Maher?

  In Australia?

• 17:58Speaker 05

Yeah, I was, well, my dad traveled a lot and, and he was in the army and I was, I never had a a base, like, uh, every time I'd meet a kid, I, he'd pick on me and then I'd befriend him and then two years later I'd leave him and, and it was continually that. I never, I had to leave my dog one time when we moved to England. And, um.

• 18:18Bill Maher?

  Tough to leave a dog.

• 18:19Speaker 05

  And I.

• 18:21Speaker 05

But, but, uh, the, the thing in eighty-five was that I, I thought I'd achieve what I'd wanted to achieve, but it hadn't made me happy.

• 18:29Bill Maher?

Well, uh, I gotta say that puts a lot of responsibility on the baby.

• 18:34Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 18:34Bill Maher?

This fucking baby obviously just laid there and didn't do anything to fix your problems when you thought, uh, I have a baby, it's all gonna be great. I think, I think that kid has a lot to answer for. Obviously, he was just laying, laying around doing.

• 18:51Speaker 05

  Sucking out money, yeah.

• 18:53Bill Maher?

You're like. So what'd you do about it? Jump in the pool?

• 18:57Speaker 05

Um, I thought about it. I actually.

• 18:59Bill Maher?

  Really?

• 19:00Speaker 05

Yeah, I actually tried to, I tried to hang myself when I was sixteen and, um.

• 19:04Bill Maher?

  How'd that go?

• 19:04Speaker 05

Well, obviously it didn't work out, but, um.

• 19:07Bill Maher?

I'm sorry. No, I mean, I'm glad. What am I saying?

• 19:10Speaker 05

I could have spared the world a couple of pop songs, you know, whatever.

• 19:12Bill Maher?

  No, we love those songs.

• 19:14Speaker 05

Uh, yeah, I was, I was really dark. I was, uh, I was failing in school. I was, really had a lot of self-loathing, you know, I, I don't know what, quite.

• 19:24Bill Maher?

Well, you're also failing at hanging yourself.

• 19:26Speaker 05

I couldn't even succeed in that. I'm fucking a loser.

• 19:29Bill Maher?

I'm kidding. I'm just fucking with you.

• 19:32Speaker 05

  I didn't succeed.

• 19:33Bill Maher?

  I know.

• 19:34Speaker 05

  Another thing I failed at.

• 19:38Bill Maher?

So let's go back to the baby, the baby, uh, the pool. You know, parenthetically, I will say, when I was a kid and we were, you know, both, I'm almost seventy, or this is a great show for subtext and genarians and people. Kids, you should be listening to us more, you know, older people have wisdom, duh. Anyway, uh, like, there was no divorce in my town. Like, it's amazing how much things have changed, you know, this has been sixties and seventies.

• 20:09Speaker 05

I remember that not happening either.

• 20:11Bill Maher?

Right, there were no drugs that I was aware, you know, it was leave it to Beaver time.

• 20:16Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 20:17Bill Maher?

But, two of the men in the neighborhood did kill themselves. One in the swimming pool. Uh, you know, yeah, daddy's in the swimming pool. Uh, it just shows, like, divorce unthinkable. Just kill, just kill.

• 20:34Speaker 05

  On the cards.

• 20:35Bill Maher?

And the one in the swimming pool, everyone in the neighborhood was like, we knew the wife. And it would just made perfect sense, it was like, I would be in the swimming pool too. If, if I couldn't divorce this woman, I mean, she was just.

• 20:50Speaker 05

  Holy shit, that's big, I mean, that's.

• 20:53Bill Maher?

But you didn't try to kill yourself in the pool.

• 20:55Speaker 05

  No. Oh, oh, in eighty-five.

• 20:57Bill Maher?

  You just looked at it.

• 20:58Speaker 05

No, no, I was, I was just really dark and I, I pulled the plug on what I was doing and started to go to union therapy for like, three or four years, you know.

• 21:07Bill Maher?

  Did that work?

• 21:10Speaker 05

It doesn't cure anything, it, it, you identify the demons, you know, some of the demons kind of thing. You know, self-loathing, um.

• 21:18Bill Maher?

But why self-loathing from such a talented handsome man?

• 21:21Speaker 05

It's, you know, you've got, you know that it's, that, the notoriety is great at first and all that and it's head, you know, it's wow, you know, and eventually, if you, you come back to who. You know, what pushed you to be in the limelight in the first place, right? I mean, it's not just.

• 21:41Bill Maher?

  Yeah, but.

• 21:41Speaker 05

I mean, there's a big part of, I think I'm not enough, and everybody that gets into the limelight. I could be wrong, but I think I've always thought that.

• 21:50Bill Maher?

Well, I don't know, the people who succeed, it wasn't, I'm not enough, it was almost, I'm too much.

• 21:55Speaker 05

But. You know. But I think there's a core of, of, of the need for validation.

• 22:01Bill Maher?

Yes, there's a lot of, mommy, look at me now, I'm doing it, mom.

• 22:05Speaker 05

I did it for my mom, I real, I mean, when my mom died.

• 22:07Bill Maher?

  Is that right?

• 22:08Speaker 05

Yeah, when my mom died, I kinda had a moment of, ah, fuck, well, who's gonna see this now?

• 22:14Bill Maher?

It's also sometimes, sometimes we just recognize in ourselves that we do have a talent. You had a big talent. Um, I have a friend who says, you know, these kids are all, everything is, woe is me. No, how about, woe is me?

• 22:29Speaker 05

  Whoa.

• 22:30Bill Maher?

Woe is me. And I was, I certainly wasn't like that, but I, I was very young when I thought, yeah, I could be a comedian, I can do what, what those people on TV are doing, and I may be even, even do it better.

• 22:43Speaker 05

Well, I, I did see that and see, yeah, I can, I can, I know I thought, yeah, I could do that. But I'm from Australia too, so, um.

• 22:54Bill Maher?

  Yeah.

• 22:55Speaker 05

There's a tall poppy syndrome over there when I was growing up, you know, you get too big, off comes your head. You know, they, they, they pull you down.

• 23:04Bill Maher?

  Who's they?

• 23:06Speaker 05

  The Aussies.

• 23:06Bill Maher?

  No, like, all of them?

• 23:08Speaker 05

  All of them.

• 23:09Bill Maher?

  But.

• 23:09Speaker 05

No, it's, it's just a general thing, I mean, your friends, i- i- it's called the tall poppy syndrome.

• 23:15Bill Maher?

You know, Canada talks about something that I think is similar to what you're talking about. I have a Canadian friend who came here, like many do, and succeeded very well, and he said, yeah, I love Canada, and I know we romanticize Canada, but they cut down the tall trees. I think it's the same thing.

• 23:33Speaker 05

Same thing, and it's a British colony, very similar, still has British roots, never been a world power, never, uh.

• 23:43Bill Maher?

But where, but where does that come from, that, don't get too big?

• 23:48Speaker 05

Uh, in Australia. There's a great book called The Fatal Shore. I don't know if you've ever read that.

• 23:53Bill Maher?

  Uh-uh.

• 23:54Speaker 05

It's brilliant. It talks about mateship.

• 23:58Bill Maher?

  Who?

• 23:58Speaker 05

  Mateship.

• 23:59Bill Maher?

  What's that?

• 24:00Speaker 05

  It's...

• 24:01Bill Maher?

  Mateship?

• 24:02Speaker 05

  Mateship.

• 24:03Bill Maher?

Oh, like a mate. You're my mate.

• 24:04Speaker 05

Yeah, a mate. How they're small...

• 24:06Bill Maher?

  Friendship.

• 24:07Speaker 05

There's no class in Australia, but there's lots of... There's no upper and, you know, but there's lots of little classes.

• 24:14Bill Maher?

  Right.

• 24:15Speaker 05

And it came from... The way he explains, it came from the Irish and the English, you know, hated each other and they founded Australia. So what a fucking nightmare that must have been. The English were the cops, the Irish were the, um, the farmers, and, uh...

• 24:33Bill Maher?

The Irish came to Australia too?

• 24:34Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 24:35Bill Maher?

  I didn't know that.

• 24:36Speaker 05

  Well...

• 24:36Bill Maher?

They were also subjugated by England at that time?

• 24:40Speaker 05

  Yes, absolutely.

• 24:41Bill Maher?

So the British brought them to Australia just as like workers?

• 24:44Speaker 05

No, they came over or a lot of them were convicts that had come over and, uh, and, um, and made good, you know, you can earn your passage into freedom, which in Australia in the seventeen, eighteen hundreds must have been wonderful.

• 24:59Bill Maher?

Right, it was a penal colony.

• 26:01Speaker 05

Dude, it was horrible. It was... There's places in Tasmania, which is the last island before, uh, Antarctica.

• 26:10Speaker 05

  And

• 26:10Bill Maher?

  Where the devil is from?

• 26:12Speaker 05

  Tasmania, exactly right.

• 26:14Bill Maher?

  Tasmanian devil.

• 26:15Speaker 05

  Funny devil.

• 26:16Bill Maher?

What is a Tasmanian devil? I forget.

• 26:19Speaker 05

A Tasmanian devil was a, it's all, they're all dead now, but it was um, uh, it was a, a half tiger, half, it was, it was a, a marsupial, cause all the marsupials are Australia. And it had tiger stripes. It was a beautiful animal. It was kinda like a dog with tiger stripes. And they loved it so much, they killed them all to stuff them and put them in their houses.

• 26:38Bill Maher?

  We killed everything.

• 26:39Speaker 05

They killed all the Aboriginals. They went through a line in Tasmania with guns and killed all the, all the Tasmanian Aboriginals.

• 26:46Bill Maher?

Alright, but outside of that unpleasantness.

• 26:49Speaker 05

  It's a lovely place.

• 26:51Bill Maher?

  Tasmania.

• 26:52Speaker 05

It's a lovely, Errol Flynn's from Tasmania. How bad could it be?

• 26:55Bill Maher?

  Is that right?

• 26:56Speaker 05

  Errol Flynn is from Tasmania.

• 26:58Bill Maher?

Wooden sword. Yep, those swords were made of wood. Everything comes around.

• 27:03Speaker 05

Talk about, talk about a guy who took advantage of, you know, his fame and everything. He uh,

• 27:09Bill Maher?

  Was he um, gay?

• 27:11Speaker 05

No, god no, he was very, very, I mean, he might have switched back and forth, but, I mean, I don't know that for sure, but I know he was up on like statutory rape charges and stuff all through, you know, and

• 27:23Bill Maher?

  Right.

• 27:23Speaker 05

And he would make jokes with like having a big rubber dick hanging out of his shorts and

• 27:27Bill Maher?

I mean, in his day, which his day was the thirties where his movies came out, you know, Captain Blood and all that stuff.

• 27:34Speaker 05

I mean, I'm amazed how, how you hear that, yeah, these guys used to hook up. Right?

• 27:40Bill Maher?

  Hook up with each other?

• 27:41Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 27:42Bill Maher?

Well, like Danny Kaye? You know who that is?

• 27:44Speaker 05

  Yeah, oh my god.

• 27:45Bill Maher?

American comedian. I've read many times that he and Laurence Olivier.

• 27:52Speaker 05

  Laurence?

• 27:53Bill Maher?

  Yeah. Yeah.

• 27:55Speaker 05

  Well, I mean, okay.

• 27:58Bill Maher?

  You know, so, you know.

• 28:00Speaker 05

I had a friend who, who used to go over to Danny Kaye's house, he was a manager of mine at the time. And he'd say Danny would make the meal and they'd all sit at the table and he'd sit at the head of the table, not eat, just watch them eat like this.

• 28:12Bill Maher?

  And then suck their dicks?

• 28:13Speaker 05

Uh, I didn't, I didn't get that far with him.

• 28:15Bill Maher?

That would be uh, why? I don't understand. What, what do you get from doing that?

• 28:19Speaker 05

Oh, I just went, I know, I thought it was weird that he'd make dinner and wouldn't eat, he'd just sit and watch them all eat the food. Maybe, maybe that, that happened later, I don't know.

• 28:28Bill Maher?

  I don't know. But anyway.

• 28:30Speaker 05

  I didn't push it.

• 28:32Bill Maher?

  So you're, you're in Tasmania.

• 28:36Bill Maher?

Go back to that. What were you telling? Why, why did you bring?

• 28:38Speaker 05

Oh, why did I bring that up? Because, because when I was a kid, we went over there and we saw the penal colony. It was the worst penal colony. It was cell, uh, cement blocks and the, and it's so cold there. It's so friggin' cold. Of course, no heating and, and, um, and it was the worst place to go if you were, uh, a prisoner. And the transports were like, very similar to what, the way they brought the slaves over from Africa to America. They, if you stole something, there was a thing called the Bloody Code in England. If you stole something over a certain amount, you're dead. They instantly execute you. Other than that, they would saw you in barges, because the prisons were full. They saw you in barges up and down the Thames, these leaky barges, and then when they got full, they discovered Australia and they said, let's send them all there.

• 29:23Bill Maher?

Yeah, Britain basically outsourced their prison population to, to, you know, this play.

• 29:30Speaker 05

But that's why Australia's Australia, because of the prisoners. I have a Spring, my family in Springthorpe. We have a Springthorpe that was on the convict ship and set in the seventeen hundreds.

• 29:40Bill Maher?

I think Georgia in our country was also a penal colony.

• 29:45Speaker 05

  Mm-hmm.

• 29:45Bill Maher?

Um, don't quote me, but I'm pretty sure I remember that. So they were doing it here in North America.

• 29:50Speaker 05

  Yeah, no, absolutely.

• 29:52Bill Maher?

You know, I didn't want to get on my high horse on this theme.

• 29:55Speaker 05

Oh, yeah, I love you on your high horse.

• 29:56Bill Maher?

Oh, okay, but like, it just.

• 29:58Speaker 05

  It's awesome.

• 29:58Bill Maher?

It always bugs me when the kids, they just don't have any understanding of, um, historical perspective. And I've tried to tell them a million times, look, humans are not good people. They weren't good people then. They're doing things now not as bad. We've come a very long way. But the bad things that they were doing, they were doing everywhere. All races did them. It's a human thing.

• 30:25Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 30:25Bill Maher?

You know, it's not just that some people were the colonizers and some people were colonized and every, oh, it was just the innocent and the guilty. It's just not that simple.

• 30:34Speaker 05

Everybody, everybody, it's humans. And it wasn't that long ago when what humans would do to each other and put up with, I mean, we still have brutality in the world. But again, they have no perspective. They have no idea how much more routine it was. And how much, how it affected so many more people.

• 30:54Bill Maher?

  Around the

• 30:55Speaker 05

  No, right, so there's

• 30:56Bill Maher?

You know, they would just, I mean, the idea that you could

• 30:58Speaker 05

  Don't they read the news?

• 31:00Bill Maher?

No, they don't. They read TikTok, read haha jokes.

• 31:03Speaker 05

I can't believe we're talking about younger people. We used to be younger people. I used to be the youngest people.

• 31:08Bill Maher?

What is this about you with no shirt on? I mean.

• 31:14Speaker 05

Like, we're segueing from, from, from world problems to me with my shirt on.

• 31:18Bill Maher?

Yeah, because you said we used to be young, but I'm telling you, you're like Benson booning it out there. I mean, I, I mean, I didn't want to say how old you are because why you

• 31:27Speaker 05

No, it's okay. It's on the internet. You can't escape that anymore.

• 31:30Bill Maher?

  I, but really, it's, it's incredible.

• 31:32Speaker 05

Well, dude, you too. I mean, when I thought of guys in the seventies as a kid, I thought some hunched over guy with a giant belly and loafers and on his way out.

• 31:43Bill Maher?

To be that. Another thing that has changed a lot. Things change a lot.

• 31:48Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 31:48Bill Maher?

You know, and that is one of, I agree. My father, when he was twenty years younger than I am now,

• 31:54Speaker 05

  Right.

• 31:55Bill Maher?

  was much more

• 31:56Speaker 05

More sedentary and on his way out.

• 31:58Bill Maher?

We would go out to the driveway if I was shooting baskets and he would like, two steps, you know, one like hook shot, oh, and you know,

• 32:07Speaker 05

  I gotta go in.

• 32:08Bill Maher?

You know, he always had a bad back and it's like, you know, it just didn't even cross their mind to like work out.

• 32:14Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 32:14Bill Maher?

Or, I remember him ever, he wasn't obese, but I don't remember him exercising. Their exercise was smoking cigarettes.

• 32:23Speaker 05

I don't either. None of my parents did and I, and um.

• 32:26Bill Maher?

How do you keep the weight off? Cigarettes. How does anybody keep?

• 32:31Speaker 05

Cut down your appetite. You don't want to eat quite as much.

• 32:34Bill Maher?

  No, cigarettes.

• 32:36Speaker 05

Yeah, and they're good for you. My doctor, he smokes himself. He's in an ad.

• 32:40Bill Maher?

You can't eat when you're smoking.

• 32:42Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 32:43Bill Maher?

Although I've seen people do it.

• 32:44Speaker 05

I, I think, I think for guys like us, the greatest uh

• 32:49Bill Maher?

  Generation.

• 32:49Speaker 05

Ben, yeah, but the greatest benefit has been the awareness of, of what keeps you healthy and how you can stay vital. In later years.

• 32:59Bill Maher?

  Of course.

• 33:00Speaker 05

If I can use that word, later years. But it's, uh, that information wasn't available. And honestly, you know, they looked at their parents. I mean, I remember my parents saying, yeah, when you're, you know, thirty or forty, you get your teeth removed and you get, uh, false teeth. There was no other option.

• 33:15Bill Maher?

  Right.

• 33:16Speaker 05

That was their view of the world.

• 33:18Bill Maher?

Right. Right? You're so right, exactly, yeah. Right, they, they made those kind of concessions.

• 33:24Speaker 05

  Right.

• 33:25Bill Maher?

And I, I concur with you, uh, when you say later years, but I mean, let's be honest. We're not in the earlier years.

• 33:31Speaker 05

  No, we are not.

• 33:32Bill Maher?

  But I, I, I'm, but.

• 33:34Speaker 05

  I'm okay with it.

• 33:35Bill Maher?

But I feel like with AI.

• 33:38Speaker 05

  Will live forever.

• 33:39Bill Maher?

  Well, they could like.

• 33:40Speaker 05

Come on, live forever. AI live forever.

• 33:41Bill Maher?

They could like start us, they could like, start a second round of us.

• 33:47Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 33:47Bill Maher?

Which is, in the past, has always been accomplished by having children. You have a mini you, it's not really you. The problem with that is that, here, here's what I think is the greatest tragedy in all of human life. Is that you spend all this time and energy and pain and effort to like, keep making this thing better.

• 34:09Speaker 05

  Right.

• 34:10Bill Maher?

This brain in your head, you know.

• 34:12Speaker 05

  And it goes with you.

• 34:15Bill Maher?

And then because the body can't sustain it, you're throwing out all the.

• 34:20Speaker 05

  All this.

• 34:21Bill Maher?

I say to people all the time, like, wouldn't you rather be thirty? I'd rather be physically thirty, but if I had to make the choice, I still would be the age I am now because I don't want that stupid thing in my head.

• 34:34Speaker 05

  Right, right.

• 34:35Bill Maher?

That caused me so much pain and made so many bad decisions and, so like, I actually wouldn't make the trade.

• 34:41Speaker 05

  Right.

• 34:42Bill Maher?

But it's just such a waste to have accumulated all this knowledge and experience and you get nicer and you get more accepting. All this working toward positive, positive, and then, uh.

• 34:55Speaker 05

  Six feet in the ground.

• 34:57Bill Maher?

Throw it in the trash because the fucking, you know, prostate gave out or whatever. It's just, it's, it's, it's.

• 35:04Speaker 05

  It's crazy.

• 35:05Bill Maher?

They will look back in two hundred years and go, that is so barbaric. And we, we could be having Isaac Newton here now.

• 35:12Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 35:12Bill Maher?

But we just couldn't figure it out.

• 35:15Speaker 05

Yeah, I, I mean, you know, uh, twenty-five, thirty, they were pretty much done, you know, back in the old days.

• 35:22Bill Maher?

  No, that's not true.

• 35:23Speaker 05

  Well, I mean.

• 35:24Bill Maher?

In, in different times of history, I mean, the Greek playwrights lived, or they were all ninety when they died. Because Gre- Greece.

• 35:33Speaker 05

  Ramses the second.

• 35:34Bill Maher?

Healthy, Mediterranean diet, olive oil, sunshine, I mean, they were lucky.

• 35:40Speaker 05

But they didn't write it down so that we could follow it.

• 35:43Bill Maher?

  What do you mean?

• 35:43Speaker 05

Well, they didn't say, this is how we're living this long.

• 35:46Bill Maher?

Well, we can guess, there was no pollution.

• 35:49Speaker 05

  Absolutely not.

• 35:50Bill Maher?

There was no Snickers bars. Right.

• 35:53Speaker 05

  No additives.

• 35:54Bill Maher?

This is what it is. This is what it is. Like, I mean, we're talking about five hundred B.C.

• 35:59Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 35:59Bill Maher?

Okay, they, their life was just healthy, unless it wasn't, there was, they were just.

• 36:04Speaker 05

You could die from a toothache, you know.

• 36:05Bill Maher?

  Or a splinter.

• 36:07Speaker 05

  Right.

• 36:07Bill Maher?

But their immune systems were probably crazy strong, so when they did, did get a splinter, no, they didn't take antibiotics. Their body just took care of it. Yeah. I mean, not always, then you get to the Middle Ages, and yes, they were living in much worse, what?

• 36:22Speaker 05

Oh, my god, I don't, there was Rome, and then there was living in fucking huts, you know, and it all went to shit.

• 36:29Bill Maher?

It all went to shit, and there was also two horrible plagues. It was really the same bacillus.

• 36:38Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 36:38Bill Maher?

  A bacillus, um, uh, it's.

• 36:43Speaker 05

  I know it too.

• 36:43Bill Maher?

It's the right name for it because it's like, uh, I don't know, but, uh, it was the plague of Justinian in the sixth century. And then it came back as the Black Death, the bubonic plague. Thirteen forty-seven it started, and it just, you know, wiped out half of Europe. And Europe didn't recover that population for four, four or five hundred years.

• 37:04Speaker 05

  And probably fucked them up.

• 37:06Bill Maher?

Yeah, it also had benefits. It also kind of ended the Middle Ages.

• 37:10Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 37:10Bill Maher?

  You know.

• 37:11Speaker 05

Which needed to end. Which, well, fucked up with that.

• 37:15Bill Maher?

  And that, honestly.

• 37:16Speaker 05

You gotta, you gotta kill half the population to make an omelet, I've always said that. I know, but it really did end the feudal system.

• 37:23Bill Maher?

  Yes, it did.

• 37:24Speaker 05

And that was, you know, that was, that was a major break.

• 37:27Bill Maher?

Yes, there was definitely a labor shortage. When you kill half the people, there was definitely a labor shortage. And they also lost a little bit of faith.

• 37:37Speaker 05

And, yeah, the ones who would guard them, yeah.

• 37:40Bill Maher?

Yes, I mean, of course, because they were so in the dark about what causing this plague.

• 37:47Speaker 05

Wouldn't that been scary? I mean, we, we know what it's like, because of the fucking covid, the beginnings of covid. Where we washed out, out bags from the grocery store, right?

• 37:56Bill Maher?

Ki- again, kids, I'm telling you, you were born at a really good time. Really good. I know we have a lot of problems, but trust me, they did not have grub hub.

• 38:07Speaker 05

  Right.

• 38:07Bill Maher?

For Chaucer. You know, he, they, they starved. I mean, even before the Black Death, which started in thirteen forty-seven. Europe had, had just experienced in the earlier part of the century. And again, for sus- for superstitious people, maybe the thirteen hundreds, they would read something into that. Apollo thirteen, I don't know, but the thirteen hundreds were the worst century ever. And, um, in the early part of the century, there was a horrible, just, uh, overrain. It killed all the crops for like ten years.

• 38:41Speaker 05

  What, what is this now?

• 38:42Bill Maher?

Like from thirteen fifteen to thirteen twenty-five, it just rained way too much. You know, there was a little ice age, you know.

• 38:50Speaker 05

  Many ice ages, yeah, yeah.

• 38:51Bill Maher?

We have global warming for sure, and we also just have climate change. Does just sometimes happen.

• 38:57Speaker 05

But they didn't have heaters and air conditioning and, so they had to suffer.

• 39:02Bill Maher?

I'm telling you, we live in a great time with all the shit. It's.

• 39:06Speaker 05

And I, I don't think, I don't think in a hundred years, they're gonna look back and go. Well, those poor fuckers. I think they're gonna go, how amazing that must have been.

• 39:17Bill Maher?

  For about us?

• 39:18Speaker 05

  About us.

• 39:19Bill Maher?

Well, we did die and they're gonna not do that, and so they're gonna, I think there's gonna be.

• 39:24Speaker 05

That'd be amazing. I mean, if they could really pull that off.

• 39:27Bill Maher?

Oh, I think they will pull that.

• 39:28Speaker 05

  Really?

• 39:29Bill Maher?

  I think they will.

• 39:30Speaker 05

Can we say a lot, lot enough till that happen?

• 39:31Bill Maher?

The thing, that's our, that's our goal. Some of us with our shirt off. Um, but, uh, I'm not gonna let that go.

• 39:40Speaker 05

  No.

• 39:40Bill Maher?

Uh, but, uh, no, it's what I was just saying about, uh, they will see this as the big tragedy, that the brain, uh, that's gotta be preserved because it has all the knowledge. And this passing it on to the next generation, it's doing it in a leaky bucket. I mean, you're doing it, but most of it is, I mean, when you think, I never had kids, but when you think about what you have to start over with, like, I have all this knowledge and now here's a two-year-old and it's just like, sky is blue, okay. I just couldn't, I just never could go through that. I just like, you know, give me the kid when he's already twenty and a genius and maybe I'll talk to him.

• 40:20Speaker 05

  Right.

• 40:21Bill Maher?

But I just can't go through sky blue. I just can't.

• 40:24Speaker 05

I get that. I, we just had a granddaughter, actually. And we're, we're probably starting at the sky is blue.

• 40:30Bill Maher?

  Of course.

• 40:31Speaker 05

But it, I'm, we're more enamored with, oh, my god, this little beautiful creature, you know, in our life. But I worry, cause I thought we wouldn't have to worry about the future, but I think shit is coming down in our lifetime. And I think I worry about my kids and I worry about my kids' kids.

• 40:53Bill Maher?

  You say you're a grandfather?

• 40:54Speaker 05

  Mm-hmm.

• 40:55Bill Maher?

And how old are the grandkids?

• 40:57Speaker 05

Uh, she was just born, so she's like.

• 40:59Bill Maher?

  Wow.

• 40:59Speaker 05

  Two weeks old.

• 41:00Bill Maher?

How does that change? I've heard certainly people a million times say, being a parent changes everything and like how does being, does, does being a grandparent like, um, change your mind?

• 41:12Speaker 05

I was never kind of, like, my wife's, uh, all she wanted was to have babies and be a great mom and everything. She's an amazing human being. And she's the complete baby hog with this.

• 41:24Bill Maher?

And how long you ever been married?

• 41:25Speaker 05

Uh, forty, forty years, forty-two years.

• 41:29Bill Maher?

Get the fuck out of town.

• 41:29Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 41:30Bill Maher?

  Really?

• 41:30Speaker 05

Uh, yeah, no, she's amazing. She, uh, people say, how, how do you stay married? I say, marry my wife, but you can't, cause I did. She, she's responsible for it.

• 41:41Bill Maher?

Women, if you're not watching this show, you're missing something. Uh, cause at the end Benson Boone is coming in and he's gonna take his shirt off. So it's gonna be a big night.

• 41:54Bill Maher?

  So.

• 41:55Speaker 05

Yeah, um, oh, fuck, what were you saying?

• 41:58Bill Maher?

  About your wife being amazing.

• 41:59Speaker 05

  She's amazing. But yeah, so.

• 42:01Bill Maher?

Oh, grandkids, does it change you?

• 42:03Speaker 05

I mean, I'm looking at my son and going, seeing him with his baby and like on his chest and like you see this look in his eyes and it's like I'm going.

• 42:13Bill Maher?

  You remember that look?

• 42:14Speaker 05

That's my little boy that I used, you know.

• 42:16Bill Maher?

  You did that?

• 42:17Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 42:17Bill Maher?

  With him?

• 42:18Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 42:18Bill Maher?

  Yeah.

• 42:19Speaker 05

Exactly. And I, I was a good dad. And my dad was a great dad, too. But, um, but you know, um, it's, the, the, the, the new life is a freaky thing. That's, I don't really know quite where to put the grandchild yet in my head. I know, they say, oh, you're gonna fall in love and you know. At the moment, you know, she's a beautiful baby blob, right? And, uh, my wife is already, you know, she's going over there tomorrow and she's like got party wheels and she's so excited as all.

• 42:51Bill Maher?

Man, I, I am really falling behind in this reproductive competition.

• 42:55Speaker 05

  I, I.

• 42:56Bill Maher?

  I don't know, we don't need more.

• 42:57Speaker 05

  Don't need more.

• 42:58Bill Maher?

I think that, and yet there's a big movement out there. Elon Musk, many other people talk about, we have to have more babies. This is like a thing.

• 43:07Speaker 05

Uh, everyone else is taking care of that.

• 43:09Bill Maher?

They're, but I think they're wrong. I think we already have too many.

• 43:13Speaker 05

I think we have way too many.

• 43:14Bill Maher?

  Yeah.

• 43:15Speaker 05

  The earth can't.

• 43:16Bill Maher?

  Exactly.

• 43:17Speaker 05

  Cannot support.

• 43:18Bill Maher?

  Exactly.

• 43:18Speaker 05

  What it has now.

• 43:19Bill Maher?

Right. It's, and their, their argument is stupid. Their argument is, there's plenty of room. Yeah, there's plenty of room. There's not plenty of resources.

• 43:27Speaker 05

  No, there's not plenty of.

• 43:28Bill Maher?

We can, we can fit them here.

• 43:30Speaker 05

  You look.

• 43:30Bill Maher?

We just can't feed them and take care of all their shit.

• 43:33Speaker 05

Exactly, exactly. Where's all that shit go? Where's all the food come from? Where's all the shit go?

• 43:38Bill Maher?

  It's somewhere.

• 43:39Speaker 05

It's insane. It's insane. It really, and there's way too many of us and I, anyone who, who doesn't believe that. I mean, you just gotta look at, uh, take any segment of any country. Uh, where there's, you know. Too many people, uh, there's shit everywhere. It's a disease and, you know, no one's having a good life. Everybody's struggling. They're happy to be alive, but they're not happy to be alive there.

• 44:06Bill Maher?

  Right, well.

• 44:08Speaker 05

I mean, if they live, you know, in a nice house and everything, they'd be, you know, but look at, look at. I mean, what, like seventy percent of the world goes to bed hungry or? That's crazy.

• 44:21Bill Maher?

  I don't think that's true.

• 44:23Speaker 05

I think that's an old. I just made that up.

• 44:24Bill Maher?

Oh, yeah, I was gonna say, right. Let's.

• 44:28Speaker 05

I was hoping you wouldn't bust me.

• 44:29Bill Maher?

Statistics on, on Club Random are pulled out of our ass. Okay.

• 44:33Speaker 05

It's open, a lot of people go to bed hungry.

• 44:35Bill Maher?

Uh, way less than they used to. That, again, uh, kids, if you're on TikTok and it's not there, I'm telling you, um. In the twenty first century, we've made enormous progress in what they called, have always called, extreme poverty. These are like people who live on a dollar a day.

• 44:55Speaker 05

  Mm-hmm.

• 44:55Bill Maher?

We've made amazing progress, not that some people don't. We've also made amazing progress in this century, hardly ever noted. Uh, with the issue of people who defecate in the street. It used to be like a billion people around the world would just drop trou and shit in the street.

• 45:14Speaker 05

  Right.

• 45:14Bill Maher?

  Really, this is, you know.

• 45:16Speaker 05

  Sixteen hundred all over again.

• 45:18Bill Maher?

  We've.

• 45:20Bill Maher?

Yeah, well, and it's in many places never improved.

• 45:23Speaker 05

  No.

• 45:23Bill Maher?

Yeah, I mean, I'm sure they did it in London in sixteen hundred and.

• 45:26Speaker 05

They used to throw shit out the window.

• 45:27Bill Maher?

  Yeah.

• 45:28Speaker 05

  Look out below.

• 45:29Bill Maher?

There's a guy named Raf who does it now. I mean, there are people who do it now. There are people who will always do it. There are always will people who will.

• 45:37Speaker 05

Can you imagine what sixteen century London smelled like? That's, I, I, I read a lot of books about, like, you know, Tudor and, you know, the history and what it was really like. And, you know, Henry the Eighth, how he died and all that crazy shit.

• 45:51Bill Maher?

Scary, man. It was like everybody stank, nobody bathed.

• 45:55Speaker 02

• 47:26Bill Maher?

And you know, it's scary also, apropos of our previous discussion. I do remember once, and again, why I wouldn't want to have a 30-year-old brain, being on a date and a girl just squatted in a parking lot and took a pee. A girl I was on a date with. That could be hot. I'm sorry, that could be, that depends on the girl and the situation.

• 47:47Speaker 05

  That could be hot.

• 47:48Bill Maher?

  I mean, she was.

• 47:49Speaker 05

Did that turn you off, or did it turn you off?

• 47:51Bill Maher?

It turned me off. I mean, but look, I.

• 47:53Speaker 05

  I'm sorry, but that's.

• 47:54Bill Maher?

She needed to do it, and for some reason, we, we, I blame myself for perhaps.

• 48:00Speaker 05

  How old were you?

• 48:01Bill Maher?

I, I, who the fuck knows, but I'm guessing thirty. Uh, it was a long time ago. And, uh, you know, I should have been able to find a bathroom, perhaps, maybe we couldn't get into the club. So I blame myself, but.

• 48:15Speaker 05

  Did you film it?

• 48:16Bill Maher?

  I don't, there was no.

• 48:17Speaker 05

Do you have it on your camera that I can look at?

• 48:19Bill Maher?

Back then, there was no, uh, no cell phones. But, um, I just, I vividly remember that, like, she was wearing a short skirt, so it wasn't hard to do, and just like. Yeah, just a.

• 48:30Speaker 05

I'm sorry, I gotta borrow the love doll over here for a second. You okay with that?

• 48:34Bill Maher?

The love doll. Um, but yeah, I mean, you know.

• 48:38Speaker 05

Well, different things turn different people on.

• 48:40Bill Maher?

Some, I'm just saying, there will always be some, uh, shitting and peeing in the street. But we, we've really cut it down, and I think we should give ourselves a clap on the back for that, you know, like. Could we just acknowledge the progress that we've made?

• 48:54Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 48:54Bill Maher?

  You know.

• 48:55Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 48:55Bill Maher?

We really have cut down on people shitting in the street, and that's really my whole issue. I'm a one-issue candidate. I mean, look how your life turned out. Awesome, right? I mean, you must be, every day you must still pinch yourself.

• 49:09Speaker 05

Yeah, but I, I still have my issues because, um. I challenge, I, I, I know the challenge, but I, I deal with myself every day. That I want to be a better person, a better writer, a better whatever, you know. And, um.

• 49:28Speaker 05

I've been, I, I could never, you know, like, I could never write Don't Worry, Be Happy.

• 49:34Bill Maher?

  I remember it.

• 49:35Speaker 05

  Yep.

• 49:36Bill Maher?

Who was it? Who was the artist?

• 49:37Speaker 05

  Bobby McFerrin.

• 49:38Bill Maher?

  Bobby McFerrin.

• 49:40Speaker 05

  Yeah, I could, um.

• 49:41Bill Maher?

Well, very few people could. I feel like every.

• 49:43Speaker 05

  Dope and all that.

• 49:44Bill Maher?

  I don't know if it's the dope. I, I don't smoke dope. My.

• 49:48Speaker 05

I thought you did. Someone said, yeah, you'll get together with Bill, and he'll smoke dope and drink, and it'll be fun.

• 49:52Bill Maher?

You know, what, were they wrong?

• 49:54Speaker 05

They're, no, they're right about the fun and the drinking, but that looks like a cigar to me.

• 50:00Bill Maher?

Oh, no, you don't smell it?

• 50:02Speaker 05

  What is it?

• 50:03Bill Maher?

Pot. What do you think it is?

• 50:04Speaker 05

  It is?

• 50:05Bill Maher?

Yeah, of course. You don't smell it?

• 50:07Speaker 05

  No.

• 50:08Bill Maher?

You, you should get your nose checked out. No, really.

• 50:12Speaker 05

  Can I sniff it?

• 50:14Bill Maher?

You can have it. You gonna eat it, smoke it? You smoke pot?

• 50:17Speaker 05

Uh, I don't. Actually, I don't. I used to love the, the, the pot high, but I get paranoid now.

• 50:23Bill Maher?

That's a fair, I get paranoid when I eat it, so I don't eat it. No, I mean, it, it, it's not for everyone.

• 50:29Speaker 05

Yeah. I mean, I, I, um, I used to, I was an acid guy. I used to love acid.

• 50:35Bill Maher?

  Really?

• 50:35Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 50:36Bill Maher?

What years are we talking about? The eighties?

• 50:38Speaker 05

Uh, no, seventies, all through the seventies. Seventies. I was an acid guy until I, this guy gave me some mushrooms.

• 50:43Bill Maher?

And you felt it was really acid, cause?

• 50:46Speaker 05

  It was windowpane.

• 50:47Bill Maher?

No, but you think it was really acid because Timothy Leary himself?

• 50:51Speaker 05

Yeah, I saw the chair, dude, I'm very fucking impressed.

• 50:53Bill Maher?

  That's right, the Timothy Leary.

• 50:55Speaker 05

  I am very fucking impressed.

• 50:56Bill Maher?

That's a cool item, yeah. So is this, by the way, and I really thank you for it. But, uh, he told me that like after like almost the original batch, there was never really acid again. That people can tell, sell you something and say it's acid. Do you, you felt it was acid?

• 51:14Speaker 05

Well, it did what it was supposed to do.

• 51:17Bill Maher?

  What was that?

• 51:18Speaker 05

Well, I started to see things and rainbows and see, you know, and.

• 51:23Bill Maher?

  Good things?

• 51:24Speaker 05

Yeah, no, I was, I was, it was an amazing high for me.

• 51:27Bill Maher?

You never had a bad trip?

• 51:28Speaker 05

I did. The last one I did, actually.

• 51:30Bill Maher?

  Oh.

• 51:31Speaker 05

Um, I've done a couple since, but the last one I did, my friend gave me some frozen mushrooms at a party. I took them home and I took the mushrooms and I said, nothing's going on. He said, oh, well, were they frozen? I said, yeah, well, drink some tea. So I drank some tea, nothing. So I took some more, nothing. Drank some more tea, nothing. So I said, fuck it, took some windowpane. I'm sitting in my apartment in Hollywood. And suddenly the walls start going.

• 52:00Bill Maher?

Well, you're not supposed to mix.

• 52:01Speaker 05

  It all kicked in.

• 52:02Bill Maher?

  You're not supposed to mix.

• 52:03Speaker 05

I know, I didn't know that. It all kicked in and I'm like, uh, I was.

• 52:07Bill Maher?

Again, this is why we're glad we're not thirty.

• 52:12Speaker 05

  Thirty.

• 52:12Bill Maher?

  Because we do things like.

• 52:13Speaker 05

  We do stupid shit.

• 52:15Bill Maher?

  That. Yes.

• 52:17Speaker 05

No, I was, it was freaking. And I, I think he came all, I remember had Valium and I'm like pouring Valium on my hand, it was like going like trying to get Valium into my mouth.

• 52:26Bill Maher?

  Bad drug trips really suck.

• 52:28Speaker 05

  Mm-hmm.

• 52:29Bill Maher?

Because you know you're not gonna get out of it.

• 52:32Speaker 05

  Right.

• 52:33Bill Maher?

  Until it.

• 52:34Speaker 05

  It's over.

• 52:34Bill Maher?

Until it says it's over. And it's gonna take a while.

• 52:38Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 52:39Bill Maher?

  I mean, I've.

• 52:40Speaker 05

That's, that's why smoking's better, because you can.

• 52:42Bill Maher?

Ex- that's why you do it.

• 52:43Speaker 05

And edibles, I've had edibles where I thought I was gonna die.

• 52:47Bill Maher?

Yeah. I would rather eat it because I'd rather not have to use my lungs to get high.

• 52:53Speaker 05

  Right.

• 52:53Bill Maher?

But it just doesn't work that way.

• 52:55Speaker 05

Yeah. No, it's a different high.

• 52:56Bill Maher?

There's also something about holding a, you know, I used to smoke, did you smoke cigarettes at some point?

• 53:02Speaker 05

Uh, for two weeks when I was fourteen.

• 53:04Bill Maher?

Lucky you, you avoided that, but there is something about smoking.

• 53:09Speaker 05

It's very, it's still very elegant, dude, I know it, it fucks people up and, you know, but it, it's.

• 53:15Bill Maher?

It's funny, the, back in the nineties when I was doing Politically Incorrect, they came to me once to do a PSA for no smoking, you know. I was the new, you know, thirty something talk show host and like, tell the kid, and I said, okay, I got a great idea for it. I wanna be honest with the kids and tell them, smoking is cool.

• 53:36Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 53:37Bill Maher?

That's what you, that's why you wanna do it. You have to be aware of that so that you can say, no, I am cool on my own, I don't need this to be cool. I thought that was a great message.

• 53:49Speaker 05

  No one got it.

• 53:50Bill Maher?

  Thank you.

• 53:51Speaker 05

  Thank you.

• 53:52Bill Maher?

For, uh, your suggestions, we'll let you know.

• 53:55Speaker 05

  Can you just read this?

• 53:58Bill Maher?

I don't think they heard anything past, smoking is cool, but it is.

• 54:03Speaker 05

  They don't want, yeah, I mean, that's.

• 54:05Bill Maher?

And it's back in movies, cuz it's cool.

• 54:07Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 54:07Bill Maher?

  And it's also a way to indicate maybe that a, a, a.

• 54:11Speaker 05

  You're an elegant human being.

• 54:12Bill Maher?

  Or a.

• 54:13Speaker 05

  Or you're a thinker.

• 54:13Bill Maher?

Or a nervous human being. It can also be.

• 54:18Speaker 05

Yeah, right, oh, yeah. I mean, I mean, everybody did it because they wanted it to hang in the fingers and everybody to go, he's fucking cool.

• 54:26Bill Maher?

I mean, when I was an actor in the eighties, I remember always, you know, doing the scene, especially if it's the close-up, and like second it was over, light the cigarette, because I was like. You know, this is my.

• 54:41Speaker 05

  Stress reliever.

• 54:42Bill Maher?

  Stress reliever.

• 54:43Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 54:43Bill Maher?

You know, I mean, you never did that when you were an actor?

• 54:46Speaker 05

  Uh, smoking, you mean?

• 54:47Bill Maher?

Well, anything like right after the scene.

• 54:50Speaker 05

Um, I would, I didn't start acting till I came over here.

• 54:53Bill Maher?

I remember watching you on, um, Californication.

• 54:57Speaker 05

  Uh huh.

• 54:58Bill Maher?

And I was like, wow, this guy is, this is risky. He's playing like a terrible version of himself with his own name. Am I remembering that wrong?

• 55:08Speaker 05

  Yes. No, you're remembering correctly.

• 55:09Bill Maher?

Yeah. I mean, I thought it was very entertaining and gutsy, but it was like, wow, for a guy who, you know, is sort of on the cusp of having a lot of stupid people.

• 55:20Speaker 05

  Uh huh.

• 55:21Bill Maher?

Want to write him off and like you're not giving him.

• 55:23Speaker 05

I spent my whole life, dude. I'm at the point where I go fuck it.

• 55:26Bill Maher?

  You're really giving them.

• 55:28Speaker 05

  Ammunition.

• 55:29Bill Maher?

But it was also a great way to own it.

• 55:31Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 55:32Bill Maher?

So I was, I think it was the right decision. It was good. I liked that show. I watched every episode. Yeah.

• 55:37Speaker 05

Writing was crazy. And when I signed on, they sent me the first script. And it was, you know, it was, it was mild. And I said, guys, I know what your show is about. And I'm okay with doing whatever you want to do. So the next script that arrived, you know, I'm like, fucking everything and you know, it was, but it was great. It was.

• 55:56Bill Maher?

  But.

• 55:56Speaker 05

It was great writing and I'm okay with that because, I mean, unless you're a fucking moron, you know, they don't hire doctors to play doctors. They hire actors to play doctors. And a friend of mine said, oh, he had to defend you, uh, a couple of years ago. He had to defend you against, uh, this woman said, I didn't know Rick Springfield. I saw Californication. I didn't know Rick Springfield did blow. Said it's acting.

• 56:21Bill Maher?

Are you trying to tell me George Clooney is not a doctor?

• 56:25Speaker 05

  I'm sorry, no.

• 56:26Bill Maher?

  Sell it somewhere else, pal.

• 56:29Speaker 05

And I, I was a doctor for, uh, eighteen months on a, on a soap opera.

• 56:34Bill Maher?

  Oh, yeah, I remember that.

• 56:35Speaker 05

Yeah. And I did one operation and the kid died.

• 56:38Bill Maher?

  What soap opera?

• 56:39Speaker 05

  Uh, General Hospital.

• 56:40Bill Maher?

Oh. Cause I work at CBS Studios. That's where we take.

• 56:44Speaker 05

Oh, Young and Restless, my best friend.

• 56:46Bill Maher?

  And Bold and Beautiful.

• 56:47Speaker 05

  Yeah. So.

• 56:49Bill Maher?

  Were you on that?

• 56:50Speaker 05

Yeah. Cause you're very bold and you're very beautiful.

• 56:53Bill Maher?

Uh, no, but, but, uh, I, when I go to my writers meeting, we pass it in the golf court, the set of it every day. I mean, people.

• 57:01Speaker 05

Who are these beautiful people that look like? Her. That robot.

• 57:07Bill Maher?

Well, you know, soap operas, a lot of great, big people were on soap operas.

• 57:13Speaker 05

  It's a great, uh, a great learning.

• 57:16Bill Maher?

  Yes.

• 57:17Speaker 05

  Platform.

• 57:18Bill Maher?

  Yeah.

• 57:18Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 57:19Bill Maher?

You felt it served that for you?

• 57:21Speaker 05

Yeah, yeah, it was great. I mean, I, I.

• 57:23Bill Maher?

Well, who did you play? Dr. Michael Matthews?

• 57:26Speaker 05

I don't know who that is.

• 57:27Bill Maher?

  Well, I'm just guessing.

• 57:28Speaker 05

You're throwing a name out. Dr. Noah Drake.

• 57:31Bill Maher?

Dr. Noah Drake is so much better.

• 57:34Speaker 05

  It's so much.

• 57:34Bill Maher?

Dr. Noah Drake, Dr. McDreamy, and the patients.

• 57:38Speaker 05

They named actually Joey's character on Friends, Drake, after my character, Drake something, whatever his last name was.

• 57:45Bill Maher?

And you'd give the girl a breast exam and then she'd say, now let me do you.

• 57:49Speaker 05

All he did was pick up, it was like my every scene, but in the cafeteria or in someone's bed.

• 57:54Bill Maher?

  Oh, poor you.

• 57:56Speaker 05

Well, acting with a, with a girl is very, you know, um, it's really hard for me to be turned on when there's thirty guys around staring at you and, you know, it's, you know, I mean, it's.

• 58:11Bill Maher?

Well, you're not supposed to be, you're acting.

• 58:13Speaker 05

  Yeah, right.

• 58:13Bill Maher?

You're not even supposed to, let's be honest.

• 58:15Speaker 05

Yeah, a couple of times it's happened.

• 58:18Bill Maher?

Oh, yeah. Oh, it does happen.

• 58:19Speaker 05

Yeah, and it's actually very exciting when it does, because it's very real.

• 58:23Bill Maher?

  For who?

• 58:24Speaker 05

  But, um.

• 58:25Bill Maher?

  For you or her?

• 58:26Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 58:26Bill Maher?

  Sometimes both, yeah.

• 58:27Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 58:28Bill Maher?

I mean, look at all the people who fall in love from doing.

• 58:30Speaker 05

  I know, I know.

• 58:31Bill Maher?

You know, they're, they're on sets and the script says.

• 58:35Speaker 05

  You love them and.

• 58:36Bill Maher?

And you're crazy for, and they're actors.

• 58:39Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 58:39Bill Maher?

  You know.

• 58:40Speaker 05

Oh, this is what I, I'm gonna commit to this role.

• 58:44Bill Maher?

It's so easy to get hot people to actually fall in love with each other.

• 58:49Speaker 05

  Let's get them together.

• 58:50Bill Maher?

  Yeah.

• 58:50Speaker 05

Put them in a movie. Give them to smell or underwear.

• 58:53Bill Maher?

The only thing that tabloids and, and, you know, gossip places do is either try to break up a couple that's.

• 59:01Speaker 05

  Or.

• 59:02Bill Maher?

  Or get them together.

• 59:03Speaker 05

Or tell, or tell everybody they're together and they don't want anyone to know.

• 59:06Bill Maher?

And it's very easy to do that.

• 59:07Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 59:08Bill Maher?

  To get them together.

• 59:09Speaker 05

  It is.

• 59:10Bill Maher?

  It really is.

• 59:11Speaker 05

They lined me up, when I first came over here, I was in all these teen magazines. I just thought about this the other day, actually, because someone brought it up. But they, you know, remember Susan Day, right? She was the beautiful.

• 59:22Bill Maher?

  I live in her house.

• 59:24Speaker 05

  Get the fuck out.

• 59:25Bill Maher?

That house, I lived next door, she was the original owner. I have pictures of when she lived there.

• 59:32Speaker 05

I was just close to fucking her in that house.

• 59:35Bill Maher?

  Everything.

• 59:36Speaker 05

  Oh, I just heard laughter.

• 59:37Bill Maher?

  Every.

• 59:39Speaker 05

No, I, I, it's, it's wild, dude, that, that is so bizarre, cuz they lined me up with her. But I thought, oh, it's just a, a teen magazine thing, so it's not a real date. So I'll just play along, and at the end I said, hey, nice to meet you, and I left. But it, they tried to line us up to get us together so that it would be press. But I was clueless, so I didn't get it.

• 1:00:00Bill Maher?

  I'm.

• 1:00:01Speaker 05

And thankfully, your house is, is sanctioned.

• 1:00:04Bill Maher?

Back to us being clueless when we were young, right?

• 1:00:07Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 1:00:08Bill Maher?

  Okay.

• 1:00:08Speaker 05

  I was totally fucking clueless.

• 1:00:09Bill Maher?

But, I mean, people, I think, know.

• 1:00:11Speaker 05

Sorry, Susan, if you hear this, I'm sorry, you're wonderful, I love you. And I would have loved to, but I didn't, I was crazy, I was clueless.

• 1:00:19Bill Maher?

Uh, yeah, and thank you, Susan, it's a great house. I mean, she sold it to someone before, she, I wasn't, didn't get it from her, but she, I believe she was the original owner.

• 1:00:28Speaker 05

  That is wild.

• 1:00:28Bill Maher?

And, uh, I have pictures of what it was like when she was there. Wow. Men and women are so different, I mean, just, it was just way more feminine.

• 1:00:38Speaker 05

  Of course.

• 1:00:39Bill Maher?

  Of course.

• 1:00:40Speaker 05

But it's, dude, I, I'm so amazed, I walked back here, and there's all these grounds, I mean, there can't be many houses with grounds like this.

• 1:00:49Bill Maher?

This isn't that, this is the house next door.

• 1:00:51Speaker 05

Oh, okay, so you've got, all right.

• 1:00:54Bill Maher?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:55Speaker 05

That's how you get grounds like that.

• 1:00:57Bill Maher?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:58Speaker 05

  It's, yeah, it's great, it's really fabulous.

• 1:01:00Bill Maher?

I need land for my crops.

• 1:01:02Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:01:03Bill Maher?

Okay, this comes from my land. I'm not gonna claim I personally grew it. But I do feel so good about the fact that, like, my own land produces the weed that makes me high.

• 1:01:16Speaker 05

  Oh, you grow your own?

• 1:01:17Bill Maher?

That's right. That's right, Rick, I grow my own, I grow my own and I smoke my own, because that's what real men do.

• 1:01:24Speaker 05

  That's what real men.

• 1:01:25Bill Maher?

And let me tell you something, it's a rich irony that you pretty boys are always more miserable than guys like me.

• 1:01:36Bill Maher?

  And cut.

• 1:01:37Speaker 05

  Yeah, exactly.

• 1:01:39Bill Maher?

Well, you enjoyed the acting part, right?

• 1:01:42Speaker 05

  Yeah, I love acting.

• 1:01:43Bill Maher?

  Oh, you do?

• 1:01:44Speaker 05

  I did.

• 1:01:45Bill Maher?

I never did, I hated it. Too much waiting.

• 1:01:47Speaker 05

Yeah, I mean, there's that, but, you know, it's the passion for the part. And to me, it's as exciting as writing a song that I finish and go, ah, that actually is not bad. And, and, you know, you do something and you feel like you've done a good job.

• 1:02:04Bill Maher?

Yeah, I, I did get a high after you nail your close up. Yeah, I remember that, or nailing a scene.

• 1:02:12Speaker 05

Yeah, when you nail a scene, that's a great feeling.

• 1:02:14Bill Maher?

It, it, it absolutely is. I mean, for me, it added up to nothing and it always, I was never destined to be that. I mean, doing what I do, I mean, as a comedian in general, but especially the kind I am, is the exact opposite of an actor.

• 1:02:30Speaker 05

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:02:31Bill Maher?

  The exact opposite.

• 1:02:32Speaker 05

  Yeah, it's all truth.

• 1:02:33Bill Maher?

It's all exactly what I really think and not like somebody else's.

• 1:02:37Speaker 05

It's not a script and you can't talk to other people's.

• 1:02:40Bill Maher?

But, you know, it was in my head, again, stupid when I was young, but we all thought when we came out of the New York comedy clubs, the way to get ahead was to be an actor, you know, get on sitcoms. I followed the script, I did, I got onto sitcoms and then I did like silly movies. I mean, we have some of the posters around here, some of them aren't real, but they could have been.

• 1:02:59Speaker 05

  Religious.

• 1:03:00Bill Maher?

  Religious, well, that was good.

• 1:03:01Speaker 05

  That's not a silly movie.

• 1:03:02Bill Maher?

That was real, that was me.

• 1:03:03Speaker 05

That was fine. And that was. Did you write that?

• 1:03:05Bill Maher?

Yeah, I was fifty-one when I did that, okay, that, that, and that was, that's the one movie that, I mean, I love. But I, you know, I did DC Cab and, you know, silly movies and I could handle that kind of acting.

• 1:03:17Speaker 05

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:03:17Bill Maher?

But, you know, it was never where I was gonna wind up and luckily, you know, I got where I was supposed to get going.

• 1:03:23Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:03:24Bill Maher?

But, um, you know, to our earlier discussion about, you know, why do you do it? I mean, you do, you do in life what you're good at. I don't play tennis because I'm not good at it, I play basketball because I'm good at it, you know?

• 1:03:38Speaker 05

  Really?

• 1:03:40Speaker 05

  I'm sorry, I didn't mean to.

• 1:03:41Bill Maher?

  Why?

• 1:03:42Speaker 05

  It's okay.

• 1:03:43Bill Maher?

Why do you say it like that?

• 1:03:44Speaker 05

I know, I didn't picture you as a basketball guy.

• 1:03:46Bill Maher?

Oh, I'm not saying I could join the Lakers tomorrow, but like for my age, uh, yeah, I can still hoop.

• 1:03:53Speaker 05

  I'm impressed.

• 1:03:54Bill Maher?

What do you, what do you play?

• 1:03:57Speaker 05

  Guitar.

• 1:03:59Speaker 05

  No, I, in Australia.

• 1:04:00Bill Maher?

  You don't play shirtless pickleball?

• 1:04:03Speaker 05

  I do. And it's hot.

• 1:04:05Bill Maher?

No, don't, you must do something, you're in good shape.

• 1:04:08Speaker 05

Um, no, I work out, but, but I, soccer was my game as a kid. I love soccer. I moved to England as a kid.

• 1:04:14Bill Maher?

  That's a great workout.

• 1:04:16Speaker 05

  It's the, the best.

• 1:04:17Bill Maher?

Oh, so you moved to England?

• 1:04:18Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:04:19Bill Maher?

Oh, so you're like the Bee Gees?

• 1:04:20Speaker 05

So, yeah. Well, the Bee Gees were born in England and they moved to Australia and then they moved back to England.

• 1:04:25Bill Maher?

Okay, but there's that, that connection.

• 1:04:27Speaker 05

Yeah, yeah, and, I lo-, I love the Bee Gees. I think their writing is.

• 1:04:33Bill Maher?

I will fight you for who loves the Bee Gees more, because I love the Bee Gees.

• 1:04:38Speaker 05

  They are amazing.

• 1:04:39Bill Maher?

They are. They're another group like Billy Joel doesn't quite get the do from the critics who have relegated.

• 1:04:47Speaker 05

  They had three fucking careers.

• 1:04:48Bill Maher?

  Exactly.

• 1:04:49Speaker 05

They had a great career in Australia. They, okay, I, I have a friend in Australia who was a big, in the sixties, he was one of the top solo guys, right? Solo stars. And he, and he heard there's these three brothers in Sydney that writes good songs, so he went up. His name was Ronnie Burns and, uh, is it, uh, and he went up to Sydney, flew up to Sydney. They pull up in a car, in a Volkswagen van, these three brothers, and they say, uh, can you give us some money for petrol? So he gives them some money for gas and they drive back to their house. They've got a guitar with two strings on it, because they can't afford any more strings. And they play him three songs and he says, oh my god, I'll take that. And then he play him another one and they say, I want that one. They said, no, that's for us.

• 1:05:34Speaker 05

And it was a song called Spicks and Specs.

• 1:05:36Bill Maher?

I know the song very well.

• 1:05:37Speaker 05

  Which was their first hit.

• 1:05:38Bill Maher?

  Yeah, it's a great song.

• 1:05:38Speaker 05

They wrote it on a two, two strings of a fucking guitar.

• 1:05:41Bill Maher?

  That sounds like bullshit.

• 1:05:42Speaker 05

  No, it's not bullshit.

• 1:05:43Bill Maher?

Oh, stop it. How could you write, how could you?

• 1:05:45Speaker 05

This is wrong, this is the guy who was there.

• 1:05:47Bill Maher?

Rick, think about it. How could you play a song with a str-, guitar with two strings?

• 1:05:53Speaker 05

  Oh, Jesus. Spicks and Specs.

• 1:05:58Bill Maher?

  Is that two strings?

• 1:06:00Speaker 05

  Well, it's one string.

• 1:06:06Speaker 05

You just need to move up the neck.

• 1:06:08Bill Maher?

  Oh.

• 1:06:08Speaker 05

Spicks and the specs. In my life.

• 1:06:11Bill Maher?

  I stand corrected?

• 1:06:12Speaker 05

  Right.

• 1:06:12Bill Maher?

It's a great song. Yeah, it's one of their early great ones.

• 1:06:15Speaker 05

And that was their first hit.

• 1:06:17Bill Maher?

  Okay.

• 1:06:18Speaker 05

And then they had the amazing ballads. And then they went under and thought they were over, and then they came back with this. It wasn't disco, they were beyond disco. And they came back with these brilliant-

• 1:06:29Bill Maher?

No, they were the kings of disco.

• 1:06:30Speaker 05

  Fucking amazing song.

• 1:06:32Bill Maher?

I mean, the, this, I, people remember You Weren't Alive, I was 21, I think, in that year, and I was in, happened to be in Europe. And it's all anybody played was the soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever.

• 1:06:43Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:06:44Bill Maher?

And it was a double album.

• 1:06:45Speaker 05

  No, it was huge.

• 1:06:46Bill Maher?

I was asking Billy Joel last week about like, what, what is your list of great double albums? Because it's not that big.

• 1:06:53Speaker 05

  No.

• 1:06:54Bill Maher?

  But Saturday Night Fever-

• 1:06:55Speaker 05

  Saturday Night Fever.

• 1:06:56Bill Maher?

Is definitely on that list. Now, it's not all BG's recordings, but I think they wrote them all.

• 1:07:03Speaker 05

  They wrote, yeah.

• 1:07:04Bill Maher?

I mean, some of them were done by other artists, but that's, but it is an-

• 1:07:07Speaker 05

Oh, we've got another song we don't want to do. It's a great song. Do you want to, you know?

• 1:07:11Bill Maher?

Oh, they wrote Islands in the Stream. It's an awesome song that they wrote for, that was not a hit for them. And the ones they wrote for Andy Gibb.

• 1:07:20Speaker 05

  Yeah, right.

• 1:07:20Bill Maher?

I just want to be your everything. How great is that record, right? You know the one I've heard?

• 1:07:26Speaker 05

Yeah, I know all, I know all the BG's.

• 1:07:28Bill Maher?

I mean, it sounds exactly like the BG's.

• 1:07:30Speaker 05

Well, he was the BG. And they were, he was almost, they were almost going to pull him into the BG's before he died.

• 1:07:36Bill Maher?

I mean, and, but you say they had three different careers. To me, they, yes, they had like the 60s early stuff. Then they had the disco period.

• 1:07:47Speaker 05

  Right.

• 1:07:47Bill Maher?

And the 60s early stuff alone has so many hits. I've got to get a message to you. I started a joke.

• 1:07:56Speaker 05

I was in Vietnam when I heard that single. It was, it blew my mind.

• 1:08:01Bill Maher?

Now, what do you think that's about? They certainly have said over the years that it was about Jesus.

• 1:08:06Speaker 05

You know what they were? They were consummate songwriters. They would pick a song and go, "Let's write a song like that'll only make it better." And they'd write a better song. And I don't think it went to that extent that it was.

• 1:08:19Bill Maher?

Well, there was the line "I died" which started the whole world living. That suggests-

• 1:08:24Speaker 05

  I think it's wordplay, dude.

• 1:08:26Bill Maher?

That suggests one particular person in history.

• 1:08:29Speaker 05

No, but I think it's wordplay.

• 1:08:30Bill Maher?

  Okay, but like if I-

• 1:08:31Speaker 05

Brilliant wordplay. Like Lennon. Lennon would always talk about his songs. There's that great thing where he meets the guy that is-

• 1:08:36Bill Maher?

  That's not wordplay.

• 1:08:37Speaker 05

Alright, okay. Well, that's your take. I get it.

• 1:08:39Bill Maher?

Wait, let me ask you. If there was never such a song, and I just said to you, "Rick, let's play a game." I'm gonna say a sentence. Tell me who you think of. And it was, "I freed the slaves."

• 1:08:53Speaker 05

  Lincoln?

• 1:08:54Bill Maher?

  Right.

• 1:08:56Bill Maher?

"I died and started the whole world living."

• 1:09:01Speaker 05

  Okay. Point taken.

• 1:09:04Bill Maher?

I mean, I don't even know if it is, or if they even were trying to like be Christy at the moment. Um, but you can't ignore that line.

• 1:09:13Speaker 05

  No, it's a brilliant line.

• 1:09:14Bill Maher?

  And I don't give a shit.

• 1:09:15Speaker 05

No, and it doesn't matter because songs are open to interpretation, right?

• 1:09:19Bill Maher?

  I love the song.

• 1:09:20Speaker 05

  It's fucking amazing.

• 1:09:22Bill Maher?

  It's just a great song.

• 1:09:23Speaker 05

And if it is that, if they came up with that, then that's even more brilliant.

• 1:09:27Bill Maher?

  But just-

• 1:09:28Speaker 05

And they didn't talk about, to not talk about it.

• 1:09:30Bill Maher?

Just the premise and the title. "I started a joke."

• 1:09:33Speaker 05

Yeah, no, it's brilliant. And that's what, that brought Robin back into the fold, right?

• 1:09:37Bill Maher?

But you know where most, they say most sick jokes start?

• 1:09:40Speaker 05

  No?

• 1:09:41Bill Maher?

  Prison.

• 1:09:43Bill Maher?

Australia. Penal colony. It all comes-

• 1:09:46Speaker 05

Okay, but they're from England. They were born in the Isle of Man.

• 1:09:50Bill Maher?

  Yeah, but they're known as-

• 1:09:51Speaker 05

But they went to Australia, so they have the convict by assimilation.

• 1:09:55Bill Maher?

By the way, I gotta say, Inexs also. An amazing band.

• 1:09:59Speaker 05

  Yeah, they're Aussies.

• 1:10:01Bill Maher?

  Amazing.

• 1:10:01Speaker 05

  Absolutely.

• 1:10:02Bill Maher?

And Crowded House, even though they're from.

• 1:10:04Speaker 05

  Crowded, oh, so great.

• 1:10:05Bill Maher?

  So great.

• 1:10:06Speaker 05

I know, there's so many great bands.

• 1:10:07Bill Maher?

Not so many, I just named them all. Actually, those are the.

• 1:10:11Speaker 05

Okay, alright, uh, I got, I.

• 1:10:13Bill Maher?

  Lulu, I think maybe had.

• 1:10:15Speaker 05

  No, Lulu was English.

• 1:10:17Bill Maher?

  Okay.

• 1:10:17Speaker 05

  Okay, Daddy Cool.

• 1:10:19Bill Maher?

  Don't know that.

• 1:10:20Speaker 05

You gotta hear it. Ross Wilson, okay, Ross Wilson, and Ross Wilson, Daddy Cool, The Church. Have you ever heard The Church?

• 1:10:27Bill Maher?

No, who are these, your local high school band?

• 1:10:30Speaker 05

No, I know, if they, if they'd been, they were, they're, uh, they were Australian, but if they'd been, um, they should have been huge, they were fucking amazing. And, and Steve Kilby still around, and, uh, the singer, uh.

• 1:10:42Bill Maher?

Okay, but, I, I'm not denying this premise, but I just gotta ask. Cause sometimes you hear about bands like this, or people like this, and they were amazing, but you don't know that. Why? Like, if they were really amazing, I always say, show business, it is full of bullshit.

• 1:10:59Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:10:59Bill Maher?

But the cream does rise to the top.

• 1:11:01Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:11:02Bill Maher?

Generally, the people you know about are the.

• 1:11:04Speaker 05

  There's a reason.

• 1:11:05Bill Maher?

  Actually are the best ones.

• 1:11:06Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:11:07Bill Maher?

You know, I know you think that there's some, you know, leading man in the woods who's probably better than Timothy Chalamet. No, he's the right guy for this moment, he's very, uh, good at what his job is. Yeah. He's very, he cares, you know, and whatever it is, or DiCaprio and his era, or who, Humphrey Bogart. You know, casting directors, they actually don't really make big mistakes, usually. So, when I hear like, oh, yeah, they're great and you've never heard of them, like, who, and, and by the way, I could name some musical artists who I think that.

• 1:11:39Speaker 05

Yeah, of course. Um. But music is, is, I think it's a different art than acting. Music hits you in such a place.

• 1:11:48Bill Maher?

  Right.

• 1:11:49Speaker 05

That, uh, nothing, nothing else does, really. It, it triggers something in you.

• 1:11:56Speaker 05

Just the beat and the music and the and it's it's twelve notes. And and they make. Look at all the amazing songs from twelve notes.

• 1:12:04Bill Maher?

People get so annoyed at you. When you don't like what they like and they think you should listen to this. Here, listen, listen.

• 1:12:11Speaker 05

No, you're not hearing it, man.

• 1:12:13Bill Maher?

  You don't like that?

• 1:12:14Speaker 05

Give it, give it some time.

• 1:12:16Bill Maher?

You fuck yourself. I could play shit you don't like that I think is great.

• 1:12:20Speaker 05

And it's it's very personal. Music is very personal. It's not like movies where. I mean, music, you said in, you sit in a room alone as a kid. When you're forming and this amazing stuff comes in. It it it's really part of your your makeup is the music you pull in. While you're still, you know, the I call it the window. Where you're like thirteen and realize, oh, there's shit out there. Until you get married or you have a job or and it shuts it down and you go, I gotta get on with my life. Is that window where everything where music comes in at at stays with you forever?

• 1:12:57Bill Maher?

  Ever?

• 1:12:57Speaker 05

  Yep.

• 1:12:58Bill Maher?

No, I mean. I don't know what I would do without it.

• 1:13:02Speaker 05

Right. I mean, it's it's your soul, it feeds your soul, you know, when when I'm. I I have music from the sixties that I listen, if I listen to it now, I go. That's pretty fucking lame, dude. But because I was thirteen, fourteen, fifteen. It spoke to me and it reassured me and I loved it.

• 1:13:22Bill Maher?

I I don't have um all the Beatles early stuff in my iPod that I play that, you know, I'm. Go into iPods again, but like. I I do like to listen to my shuffle because. It's got four thousand songs, all of which have one thing in common. I like them. But I don't have all the early Beatles stuff. I mean, some of it is just. First of all, the lyrics are for twelve year olds, which is okay. That we understand that.

• 1:13:48Speaker 05

Well, I I don't think guys at that age.

• 1:13:50Bill Maher?

But if I fell is in there, because that is always good.

• 1:13:52Speaker 05

That was John's first great ballad.

• 1:13:54Bill Maher?

It's a great ballad. It's a great ballad, but I don't have Love Me Do. They were sixteen.

• 1:14:00Speaker 05

  Yeah, okay.

• 1:14:01Bill Maher?

  I don't, I mean, I've heard it enough. I get it.

• 1:14:03Speaker 05

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:14:04Bill Maher?

It has their magic, like all of it has their magic, but it's just not a song I wanna hear over and over.

• 1:14:09Speaker 05

  Right.

• 1:14:10Bill Maher?

If it comes on, it doesn't.

• 1:14:11Speaker 05

Were you a Paul or John guy as a kid?

• 1:14:13Bill Maher?

Oh, that's not a question you can ever ask a Beatle fan because you have to love them equally.

• 1:14:18Speaker 05

No, that's not a good answer.

• 1:14:20Bill Maher?

  That's my honest answer.

• 1:14:21Speaker 05

  Really?

• 1:14:22Bill Maher?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:23Speaker 05

Oh, I was a Paul guy.

• 1:14:24Bill Maher?

  Because, well.

• 1:14:26Speaker 05

Well, cuz I loved the way, I I had a boy crush, could love the way he looked. Plus, he was amazingly talented. He had a voice like a fucking god. He could play every instrument and to for me, he wrote the most pop best song. But as I've gotten older, I've understood Strawberry Fields and and and uh uh the great John songs that really stick to the wall.

• 1:14:50Bill Maher?

  Revolution?

• 1:14:52Speaker 05

Well, Revolution, I was never crazy about, honestly.

• 1:14:54Bill Maher?

I'm I'm still crazy about it and always will be. I mean, I'm talking.

• 1:14:58Speaker 05

  Well, that's.

• 1:14:59Bill Maher?

Talking about the single fast version.

• 1:15:01Speaker 05

  Yeah, the.

• 1:15:01Bill Maher?

The single fast version. Yeah, I'm not, that's not.

• 1:15:05Speaker 05

  But the the rock one.

• 1:15:06Bill Maher?

  Oh, the single.

• 1:15:08Speaker 05

Yeah, one of the first uh examples of distorted guitar.

• 1:15:12Bill Maher?

  Distorted guitar.

• 1:15:13Speaker 05

Yeah, and they didn't put it through an amp, they put it through a board.

• 1:15:16Bill Maher?

  It was the right choice.

• 1:15:17Speaker 05

Yeah, it how. We're still copying the Beatles. I mean, I hear songs now where they've taken snippets and snuck it in.

• 1:15:25Bill Maher?

  But they were copying.

• 1:15:27Speaker 05

Well, yeah, but they took it way beyond, dude.

• 1:15:29Bill Maher?

Of course they did, but everybody cops.

• 1:15:31Speaker 05

Everybody stands on somebody's shoulders. I absolutely agree with that.

• 1:15:34Bill Maher?

Absolutely. I mean, on their first three albums.

• 1:15:37Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:15:38Bill Maher?

Uh, I'm sorry, three of their first four albums, the exception being Hard Day's Night.

• 1:15:44Speaker 05

  Hard Day's Night.

• 1:15:45Bill Maher?

There was fourteen fourteen songs and six covers on each, so they did eighteen covers. So.

• 1:15:53Speaker 05

Well, that's cuz they weren't writing enough, that's all.

• 1:15:55Bill Maher?

Yeah, and also because they were still um paying tribute to.

• 1:15:59Speaker 05

  And hammered with.

• 1:16:01Bill Maher?

Yes, the time that went before.

• 1:16:03Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:16:04Bill Maher?

And I'm glad they did. I'm glad they did, please, Mr. Postman.

• 1:16:07Speaker 05

Uh, I, the the the British bands are responsible for the acknowledgement of a black American blues. When when black America, when America was going, uh, we don't pay attention to them. England was going, oh, my god, these guys are frickin' unbelievable.

• 1:16:25Bill Maher?

  I mean, Keith Richards devoted.

• 1:16:29Bill Maher?

I think a couple of years of his life to giving Chuck Berry his due.

• 1:16:35Speaker 05

Well Chuck had Chuck had had hits. I mean, he was like one of the few black artists that was actually on the white charts. But there's all that Howlin' Wolf and and um and Muddy Waters and all these guys that they were I was listening to as a kid too. And they were I'm going I'm hearing this growl and this animal like shit coming out of these guys. I'm going what is that? It was almost scary. It was so intense.

• 1:17:04Bill Maher?

Yeah, and you can imagine the racism in his era that Chuck Berry had to endure.

• 1:17:09Speaker 05

  It's crazy to me.

• 1:17:11Bill Maher?

I mean, he participated, as I recall, in the Keith Richards.

• 1:17:17Speaker 05

Is that the one where he punched Keith in the mouth?

• 1:17:20Bill Maher?

I mean, I think Keith Richards expected him to be like, you know, thank you so much.

• 1:17:25Speaker 05

  Yeah, thank you so much.

• 1:17:26Bill Maher?

For taking the time to acknowledge that I am the progenitor of rock and roll. And Chuck Berry was like, Whitey, you know what? If you expect a thank you, you have got another thing coming. I did it. I'm happy I did it.

• 1:17:40Speaker 05

I did it originally. You're just copying me.

• 1:17:41Bill Maher?

I don't need you to come in here and tell me I I did it and say thank you. Because first of all, you stole it.

• 1:17:53Speaker 05

Stole his legs, all his legs. But but no one would know about them. It wasn't for the British bands that loved them. They wouldn't be where they are or where they became. I mean, they brought them out and toured with them. You know, that they understood how amazing they were because there wasn't the same prejudice in England as there was here. They kept them away from

• 1:18:19Bill Maher?

  Right.

• 1:18:20Speaker 05

the radio here. And I, you know, I mean, I look now I look for a black artist that kind of continue that blues uh uh uh energy. And there's there's a couple of them around and they're amazing.

• 1:18:35Bill Maher?

  Like?

• 1:18:36Speaker 05

Uh but I mean, that's where that's where I learned to play the guitar was from blues players because it was it was simple. You could play it in a couple of weeks. It wasn't hard, but you couldn't get, you know, my, our white boy versions of, you know, Smokestacked Lightning were pretty fucking lame, but you could play the riffs and you could feel like you were doing something, you know, authentic.

• 1:19:02Bill Maher?

The great thing about the arts is that most of us are such poor impersonators that when we steal, it's so bad, our impersonation, they, nobody recognizes it. Woody Allen was doing Bob Hope. He was doing him, but he's so different, you didn't see it.

• 1:19:22Speaker 05

  No one saw it, right?

• 1:19:23Bill Maher?

And sometimes, you know, Paul McCartney was doing Little Richard, but it just, he's just a different guy.

• 1:19:29Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:19:30Bill Maher?

So it just come, he, in his mind, he's doing it.

• 1:19:33Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:19:33Bill Maher?

But it, we don't see it, you know, and it, that's okay.

• 1:19:37Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:19:37Bill Maher?

That's not appropriation. It's all appropriation. That's what culture is, appropriating from each other. It's actually a beautiful thing.

• 1:19:46Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:19:46Bill Maher?

  Our beautiful.

• 1:19:47Speaker 05

No, it's continuing the, the legacy.

• 1:19:49Bill Maher?

  Yes.

• 1:19:49Speaker 05

You know, it's a, I mean, and what.

• 1:19:51Bill Maher?

  And sharing ideas.

• 1:19:52Speaker 05

Yeah, and what Paul did with I'm Down, you know, he basically.

• 1:19:56Bill Maher?

  Yeah, that's it.

• 1:19:57Speaker 05

Created a Little Richard song and, but the fact that he could sing like that.

• 1:20:01Bill Maher?

Well, and he did it on their last album, Abbey Road, he did.

• 1:20:07Speaker 05

  Oh Darling.

• 1:20:07Bill Maher?

Oh Darling, which is a rock, which is a torch song, you know? I'm sure John was rolling his eyes.

• 1:20:15Speaker 05

Yeah, he said, I wish I, I should have sung that.

• 1:20:18Bill Maher?

  Really?

• 1:20:18Speaker 05

Actually, I read a quote, he said, I, I should have sung Oh Darling, but.

• 1:20:22Bill Maher?

Well, he put out a solo album, Lennon did.

• 1:20:25Speaker 05

Yeah, the rock and roll one, right?

• 1:20:27Bill Maher?

Rock and roll, and he did love that raw music, you know, that was their big beef, is that he wanted it raw, like the early days.

• 1:20:36Speaker 05

Well, they were. I mean, you listen to the first album.

• 1:20:39Bill Maher?

  They, they were both.

• 1:20:40Speaker 05

Well, the, the first album, they did in, what, like 12 hours or something? And you can hear him shredded their voices.

• 1:20:48Bill Maher?

That's why they, they, that's why they recorded Twist and Shout last.

• 1:20:52Speaker 05

Yeah, last, right, because it would shred his throat. But you can hear like nasal shit going on up here.

• 1:20:57Bill Maher?

I love it. I love, the vocal to Twist and Shout is one of my all time favorites.

• 1:21:00Speaker 05

  Unbelievable.

• 1:21:01Bill Maher?

  And it's because it's a little shredded.

• 1:21:03Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:21:04Bill Maher?

  I mean, it's the energy.

• 1:21:05Speaker 05

But people weren't do, white guys weren't doing that back then. They were Pat Boone, you know?

• 1:21:11Bill Maher?

I mean, they thought Elvis was black when they played him. You know, I mean, that was.

• 1:21:15Speaker 05

Oh, that's one thing I have. I have a, I have Elvis, stationery, the Beatles sign.

• 1:21:23Bill Maher?

  The Beatles sign?

• 1:21:24Speaker 05

Beatles signed Elvis stationery. When they went to meet, they meant, went to meet him in nineteen sixty-five.

• 1:21:30Bill Maher?

  Yeah, out here.

• 1:21:31Speaker 05

  And, um.

• 1:21:32Bill Maher?

Well, the Hollywood Hills, he was staying, uh, in some house and he was making a picture, you know. They were, that was, that was the era when he was.

• 1:21:40Speaker 05

That was Elvis trying to conquer Hollywood.

• 1:21:42Bill Maher?

Shitty pictures every year. I mean, they made money.

• 1:21:44Speaker 05

But, uh, dude, I hated them, but I love them now.

• 1:21:48Bill Maher?

  He hated them.

• 1:21:49Speaker 05

I know, but I, uh, fun and Acapulco, I love that music.

• 1:21:52Bill Maher?

  I love Elvis.

• 1:21:54Speaker 05

  Yeah, I do too.

• 1:21:54Bill Maher?

I mean, but I'm not gonna watch fun and Acapulco again. Once was enough.

• 1:21:58Speaker 05

No, I wouldn't watch it, but I love the, the music is kind of, back then, it was like, oh, this is, this is fucked up. But it now, cause of childhood memories and everything, it's wonderful to me. And I met Elvis on a plane.

• 1:22:11Bill Maher?

  Really?

• 1:22:12Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:22:13Bill Maher?

  Elvis Presley?

• 1:22:14Speaker 05

No, I'm sorry. Is there another? Yeah, Elvis Costello.

• 1:22:17Bill Maher?

  Yeah.

• 1:22:18Speaker 05

No, I met Elvis, no, I met Elvis on a plane.

• 1:22:20Bill Maher?

  What year was this?

• 1:22:21Speaker 05

Nineteen seventy-three, I was, I'd just come over here. And actually, my managers at the time, uh, my manager was Steve Binder, who directed the, the comeback special.

• 1:22:35Bill Maher?

  Oh.

• 1:22:35Speaker 05

  The Elvis Presley comeback special.

• 1:22:37Bill Maher?

  Sixty-eight.

• 1:22:37Speaker 05

  And he has.

• 1:22:38Bill Maher?

  The black leather suit.

• 1:22:39Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:22:40Bill Maher?

Who was he like when you met him?

• 1:22:42Speaker 05

He was wonderful, actually. Um, I walked on the plane and he was sitting, I was in the back of the bus, cause I was going to Australia to renew my visa. And he was sitting in the front, in a, a powder blue suit and jet black hair and skinny, and he looked fucking amazing. I wasn't a fan back then, cause I was, you know, the Beatle guy and everything, and I walked by him and, ah, it's Elvis. I sit in the back of the bus and, um, to, uh, before we landed, he came back and signed autographs and took photos. Which, if you've ever, you know, you've been on planes with people and they've got like the hoodie on and they're like, don't talk to me, I'm, you know.

• 1:23:19Bill Maher?

  Sure.

• 1:23:19Speaker 05

Elvis walked back and signed autographs and took photos. And I had a girlfriend at the time in Australia that was an Elvis fan. And I said, uh, hey, uh, uh, he came up to me and said, hey, I, I know Steve Benner, he's my manager. And he go, ah, Steve, I love Steve, which he did. I mean, they really had a great connection. And, um, I said, will you sign this autograph to, to Allison? I guess he thought my name was Allison. So I wrote, thanks. And to this day, I write thanks a lot of the times on my autographs because Elvis wrote that on this autograph to her.

• 1:23:55Bill Maher?

You know what? I've been looking for something to write on the autograph for like thirty years.

• 1:24:00Speaker 05

I give it to you, brother.

• 1:24:02Bill Maher?

  Thanks.

• 1:24:03Speaker 05

  Thanks.

• 1:24:03Bill Maher?

It's so, it's so simple and so right.

• 1:24:06Speaker 05

  That's absolutely, I love you.

• 1:24:08Bill Maher?

I'm thanking you for being my fan.

• 1:24:10Speaker 05

Thank you for appreciating what I do.

• 1:24:12Bill Maher?

  Right.

• 1:24:13Speaker 05

Right. Uh, the better version is thank you for loving me, but I don't wanna go there.

• 1:24:18Bill Maher?

No, I don't wanna go there either.

• 1:24:20Speaker 05

But, yeah, it was awesome. And so I put it, I had a little recorder, a tape recorder that I used to record my demos on. And I put the autograph in there to take it back to my girlfriend. And when I was getting off the plane in Australia, uh, the customs go, oh, what's that, mate? You know, yeah, I have porn on my, you know, on my little recorder. Yeah, we need to take that and look at that. When it came back, the autograph was gone.

• 1:24:45Bill Maher?

  Really?

• 1:24:45Speaker 05

Yeah, so some fucker has the Elvis autograph.

• 1:24:48Bill Maher?

I think I might change mine to thank you. It's from thank.

• 1:24:52Speaker 05

  Thank you.

• 1:24:53Bill Maher?

  I, I like that better.

• 1:24:54Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:24:55Bill Maher?

  It's a little.

• 1:24:55Speaker 05

Thanks a little, thanks. I gotta go over here, but thanks.

• 1:24:59Bill Maher?

You can get away with it if you're Elvis.

• 1:25:01Speaker 05

You definitely can get away with it if you're fucking Elvis.

• 1:25:03Bill Maher?

I need the full thank you. I may need, I may.

• 1:25:06Speaker 05

Maybe parentheses, don't forget me ever.

• 1:25:10Bill Maher?

I may need thank you very much, in two languages.

• 1:25:15Speaker 05

  Yeah, are you Swedish?

• 1:25:17Bill Maher?

  But you still write songs?

• 1:25:19Speaker 05

  Yeah, yeah, I'm right.

• 1:25:20Bill Maher?

Like every day? Is that something you do like every day?

• 1:25:23Speaker 05

  Every day.

• 1:25:24Bill Maher?

  Every day?

• 1:25:25Speaker 05

No, not every day. It's a binge thing. And, um, I love to write. It's my favorite thing to do. And, uh, I just had an album out with like twenty new songs and, um.

• 1:25:38Bill Maher?

Come on, they put twenty songs on an album now?

• 1:25:40Speaker 05

Yeah, it was digital. You can do that now. Plus I write short songs. But yeah, I, I love to write. It's, it's really fun for me. And, and to play a new song in a show, you know, I mean, you can only play the songs we play so many times. And go.

• 1:25:58Bill Maher?

  But you have to play.

• 1:25:59Speaker 05

Here we go again, you know.

• 1:26:00Bill Maher?

You have to play the hits.

• 1:26:00Speaker 05

Yeah, but but I and I get that and I and I love that because I want I know I wanna play I want the audience to have fun.

• 1:26:07Bill Maher?

  You have to.

• 1:26:07Speaker 05

I want the audience to have fun. I'm not the guy that get up, I this is my new album, I'd like to play all twelve cuts.

• 1:26:13Bill Maher?

  No, no, no.

• 1:26:13Speaker 05

  It's not the venue either.

• 1:26:15Bill Maher?

  That's right.

• 1:26:15Speaker 05

But so we we uh throw a couple of songs in, you know, a new song.

• 1:26:20Bill Maher?

  Everybody does that.

• 1:26:21Speaker 05

Yeah, it's great. I love it.

• 1:26:22Bill Maher?

Hey, we have to go to the bathroom someday.

• 1:26:24Speaker 05

Yeah, I. I went to an Elton John show, right? And he says, yeah, we like, I'm gonna play a new song for my new album, and I got up to go to the bathroom, right? And there was a fucking line to the male bathroom. Right, and I get behind this guy and he turns around and goes, new song, huh?

• 1:26:43Bill Maher?

That would be funny for someone to put on an album cover of just people in line for the bathroom, like.

• 1:26:48Speaker 05

  These are new songs.

• 1:26:50Bill Maher?

These are the songs you're gonna hear.

• 1:26:51Speaker 05

  Bathroom songs.

• 1:26:52Bill Maher?

  I mean, it's it's a little unfair because.

• 1:26:55Speaker 05

I get it. You go to you go for a maximum moment. You're going to a concert for a maximum moment. You don't wanna, you know, you don't want, it's a big deal. You you know, you you babysitter, dog sitter, whatever, dinner.

• 1:27:10Bill Maher?

  Right.

• 1:27:11Speaker 05

Ex- over expensive T-shirt, parking the ridiculous, walking up to a venue with a trillion people, finding your right seat. You want it to be a moment.

• 1:27:20Bill Maher?

  Yes.

• 1:27:20Speaker 05

You don't want dead, you know, we're gonna play our new song, hope you buy our single.

• 1:27:27Bill Maher?

I mean, whenever I read about concerts, it makes me always say to myself, I just don't understand the American economy. Uh, you know, that we can't seem to solve this issue where, yes, there are, no, not seventy percent of people starving. Not even close. But so a lot of people really struggling, like like half the country uh has four hundred dollars in the bank, like they can't, they one little hiccup.

• 1:27:55Speaker 05

  Right.

• 1:27:56Bill Maher?

That and they're fucked. And then. Beyonce and Taylor Swift and you know, I mean, you're not getting their ticket price, but it's a lot of money to see your shit. It's and like you say with babysitters and.

• 1:28:12Speaker 05

  That's crazy.

• 1:28:13Bill Maher?

I mean, I I pull, I went to just a restaurant in uh out at the beach last weekend. Parking was twenty seven dollars.

• 1:28:24Speaker 05

The fuck is up with us?

• 1:28:26Bill Maher?

Twenty seven dollars just to park.

• 1:28:28Speaker 05

Ticket was six shillings, which is about a dollar fifty.

• 1:28:33Bill Maher?

My Fair Lady was on Broadway, the biggest hit in nineteen fifty six, the year I was born. A ticket was six dollars for the front row.

• 1:28:42Speaker 05

I saw My Fair Lady in London.

• 1:28:44Bill Maher?

  Wow, wow.

• 1:28:45Speaker 05

  Julie Andrews.

• 1:28:46Bill Maher?

  Wow.

• 1:28:47Speaker 05

  And Rex Harrison.

• 1:28:48Bill Maher?

  Come on.

• 1:28:49Speaker 05

I was ten years old. I didn't appreciate it. My mom was completely into that shit. She took us uh to this.

• 1:28:56Bill Maher?

  London?

• 1:28:57Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:28:58Bill Maher?

With Julie Andrew. I mean, she didn't even do the movie. I mean, Audrey Hepburn did a great job.

• 1:29:03Speaker 05

  She was, she was.

• 1:29:03Bill Maher?

But she was the original Eliza Doolittle.

• 1:29:06Speaker 05

  She killed it.

• 1:29:07Bill Maher?

I mean, I always say that is one part that I would be great at, Professor Higgins.

• 1:29:12Speaker 05

  Professor Higgins?

• 1:29:13Bill Maher?

I would not Eliza Doolittle, but I could be a curmudgeonly professor. It's a great part and you can't, it can't ever be kind of too old for it. You could do it too.

• 1:29:24Speaker 05

So and he couldn't sing, so he spoke the fucking line.

• 1:29:28Bill Maher?

  He's half sang.

• 1:29:29Speaker 05

Yeah, but it was wonderful when he did.

• 1:29:31Bill Maher?

  Right.

• 1:29:32Speaker 05

They that that album played through my house.

• 1:29:34Bill Maher?

  Me too.

• 1:29:35Speaker 05

  For years.

• 1:29:37Bill Maher?

The other thing that played in my house as a child was Camelot. Richard Burton.

• 1:29:44Speaker 05

Was that one of the greatest musicals ever?

• 1:29:48Bill Maher?

Both because of the music. Was it Rodgers and Hammerstein?

• 1:29:52Speaker 05

Uh, you know what? I love Rodgers and Hammerstein were were my favorites because of Oklahoma, Carousel.

• 1:29:59Bill Maher?

  Right.

• 1:29:59Speaker 05

Um, um, South Pacific, the brilliant, it was played through my house all the time. I don't know if they did Carousel. I would, I mean, um. Uh, uh, Camelot. We need to look that up.

• 1:30:11Bill Maher?

Well, I know Lerner and Lowe did My Fair Lady.

• 1:30:14Speaker 05

Yeah, My Fair Lady, right. They did great shit.

• 1:30:16Bill Maher?

Yeah, they did great shit. Anyway, somebody did that.

• 1:30:20Speaker 05

Who did Camelot? I mean, we need to know.

• 1:30:22Bill Maher?

No, well, let them, let them look it up.

• 1:30:25Speaker 05

  Look it up.

• 1:30:26Bill Maher?

They all have fucking JOTGPT. They can fucking, they can find it in two seconds. And they don't care, and I don't care. They're dead.

• 1:30:34Speaker 05

No, I'm a writer, so I love to know who wrote what.

• 1:30:37Bill Maher?

I thi- I mean, I don't think it is Rogers and that or something, because it was a little, you know why? Because it's a little, it's a little too hip for them.

• 1:30:44Speaker 05

Yeah. Yes, yes, I agree. And later, later on, too.

• 1:30:48Bill Maher?

But it was always a very meaningful, um, show for me. If people don't know what it is, it's the King Arthur legend. But it made into a romantic story and then, of course, used as a metaphor for the Kennedy administration. But in the story, King Arthur, he's older. They made a movie of it with, uh,

• 1:31:07Speaker 05

  Richard Harris?

• 1:31:08Bill Maher?

  Richard Gere.

• 1:31:09Speaker 05

  What?

• 1:31:10Bill Maher?

Yes, not Richard Harris, Sean Connery. Sean Connery played the king.

• 1:31:16Speaker 05

  The Camelot movie?

• 1:31:17Bill Maher?

  It's called First Night.

• 1:31:19Speaker 05

Oh, okay, but it's not a musical?

• 1:31:20Bill Maher?

No, no, it's the same story.

• 1:31:22Speaker 05

  Right, right, yeah.

• 1:31:23Bill Maher?

The story is that, uh, King Arthur, he's older and he's got a young bride.

• 1:31:29Speaker 05

  Right.

• 1:31:29Bill Maher?

And then she falls for the handsome young knight, played by Robert Goulet originally.

• 1:31:34Speaker 05

  Goulet!

• 1:31:35Bill Maher?

Sir, who was a friend of mine, Sir Lancelot.

• 1:31:39Speaker 05

Wait, Lancelot's a friend of yours or Goulet's a friend of yours?

• 1:31:41Bill Maher?

  Goulet.

• 1:31:42Speaker 05

  Is he still around?

• 1:31:43Bill Maher?

  No.

• 1:31:45Speaker 05

  Dude, he's awesome.

• 1:31:46Bill Maher?

He was. I, we had a great time. A little kooky, but still.

• 1:31:51Speaker 05

Dude, I would love to have met Goulet.

• 1:31:53Bill Maher?

Still, oh, I could have worked that up. Still friends with his widow. Um, I took, my mother was a giant Goulet fan as a kid.

• 1:32:01Speaker 05

  My mom was too.

• 1:32:02Bill Maher?

Okay, so for her 75th birthday, I flew her to Vegas on a private plane. And we went to Robert Goulet's house and then went out to dinner in the limo to, uh,

• 1:32:12Speaker 05

So how did you hook up with Robert Goulet?

• 1:32:14Bill Maher?

You know, I was on TV. He was a fan. I had him on the show, whatever, you know, it wasn't hard.

• 1:32:19Speaker 05

  Isn't that great?

• 1:32:19Bill Maher?

It wasn't hard. Great. Totally great. Yeah.

• 1:32:22Speaker 05

Fucking great when you meet people that you wouldn't normally have met because of what you do.

• 1:32:26Bill Maher?

Yeah, it also could be dangerous. You know, they say, don't meet your idols. I mean, there's some of that that can happen.

• 1:32:32Speaker 05

  Yes, I agree totally.

• 1:32:34Bill Maher?

  Yeah.

• 1:32:34Speaker 05

And Paul McCartney is a fucking god.

• 1:32:37Bill Maher?

He's great. I've met him a number of times. I am not disappointed, you know.

• 1:32:43Speaker 05

I wouldn't wanna, I'd be scared to meet John. You ever meet John?

• 1:32:48Bill Maher?

  No.

• 1:32:48Speaker 05

No, no one did. No one alive met John. I would be scared to meet John.

• 1:32:53Bill Maher?

People alive have, but he died in nineteen eighty. That is a long time ago.

• 1:32:56Speaker 05

I remember saying, I had an apartment in Hawthorne Boulevard in Hollywood. And I would walk, I used to eat, when I first came over here, I thought, oh my god, Hungry Man dinners, how amazing. And I eat these Hungry Man dinners and tell my mom, yeah, these Americans are amazing. They got these whole dinners in tin foil and. And I started to get like zits popping out all over my head. And my do- and the doctor said, you gotta go to a real restaurant and eat a steak. So I went, I used to go to the Hungry Tiger across the street from me, La Brea Avenue. And I'm standing on La Brea Avenue waiting across for traffic. And a Rolls Royce goes by. And Lennon is sitting in the passenger seat. And it's so, so, you know, I know it's him, right? And he's heading to A and M Studios, which is just down the street.

• 1:33:40Bill Maher?

  Right.

• 1:33:41Speaker 05

For his, uh, you know, stuff he did in the last weekend.

• 1:33:44Bill Maher?

  Right.

• 1:33:44Speaker 05

But it was Lennon, and I'm going, wow.

• 1:33:49Bill Maher?

So what kind of food did you have in Australia? Grubs and roots? You're you're impressed by that?

• 1:33:54Speaker 05

Yeah, we ate, oh kangaroos, we ate sharks, we ate snakes, poison snakes.

• 1:33:58Bill Maher?

Um, but you had food. You you didn't have Hungry Man dinners?

• 1:34:01Speaker 05

No, dude, I came over here and we think, America, back then, we thought America, my mom used to say, oh my god, their teeth are so white there. Skin is so good, you know, the movies, it's, uh, the movies were the greatest. P R thing America ever had, and still, it's still, people still wanna come to America because of the movies.

• 1:34:23Bill Maher?

I once asked Chris Hemsworth, why do you guys all like, speak such perfect America? You could you could do these American accents? And he said, because that's all we watched as kids.

• 1:34:32Speaker 05

  Right.

• 1:34:32Bill Maher?

  Is American T V.

• 1:34:34Speaker 05

I remember, uh, in my high school, walking around trying to imitate John Wayne. And and I, all I wanted to do was come to America. I wanted to be in America.

• 1:34:45Bill Maher?

  Well.

• 1:34:45Speaker 05

  I'm here.

• 1:34:46Bill Maher?

  You succeed.

• 1:34:47Speaker 05

  You're here.

• 1:34:49Bill Maher?

It was a pleasure and beyond to

• 1:34:51Speaker 05

  You too.

• 1:34:52Bill Maher?

get to know you and talk to you.

• 1:34:53Speaker 05

  I'm a big fan.

• 1:34:55Bill Maher?

  I'm a fan of yours.

• 1:34:56Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:34:56Bill Maher?

That you came to America and you did so well and I'm glad you're over there depression.

• 1:35:01Speaker 05

And, yes, I did and I will not hang myself and I hope we do wonderful things.

• 1:35:11Speaker 05

  Oh my god.

• 1:35:12Bill Maher?

  I know, I'm a fun guy.

• 1:35:14Speaker 05

  Thank you, brother.

• 1:35:15Bill Maher?

I'm telling you, it really, yeah.

• 1:35:16Speaker 05

It goes fast, that was awesome.

• 1:35:18Bill Maher?

So were you, by the way.
