Chronic migraine means 15 or more headache days a month, each lasting four hours or more. Botox, onabotulinum toxine, prevents headaches in adults with chronic migraine. It is not approved for those with 14 or fewer headache days a month. Botox, the number one prescribed branded chronic migraine preventive treatment, prevents, on average, eight to nine headache days a month versus six to seven for placebo. Prescription Botox is injected by your doctor. Effects of Botox may spread hours to weeks after injection, causing serious symptoms. Alert your doctor right away as difficulty swallowing, speaking, breathing, eye problems, or muscle weakness can be signs of a life-threatening condition. Patients with these conditions before injection are at highest risk. Side effects may include allergic reactions, neck and injection site pain, fatigue, and headache. Allergic reactions can include rash, welts, asthma symptoms, and dizziness. Don't receive Botox if there's a skin infection. Tell your doctor your medical history, muscle or nerve conditions,

• 1:00Amy Poehler?

Hey, everyone. Welcome to another episode of Good Hang. Very excited to introduce my guest, Dakota Johnson. Just an amazing actress and truth teller. And this is actually the first podcast she's ever done that she told us. So we're very honored to have her here. We talk about a lot of fun stuff today. We talk about analyzing her dreams. We talk about her receiving the Razzie for the movie Madame Web. We talk about her new movie, The Materialist, coming out with Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal. So we really get into it, a bunch of great stuff. And we always like to start these interviews with Zoom from a friend of our guests or a fan of our guests, someone who's going to give me a question to ask them.

• 1:44Amy Poehler?

So joining me now is Blake Lee. He is an actor. You may recognize him from Parks and Rec. He played Derek, the boyfriend of April Ludgate, who also had a boyfriend. So they were a throuple. And that confused Leslie. Nope. So Blake Lee is joining us. He is great friends with Dakota, and he's going to fill us in and get us ready for this interview. Blake, hi.

• 2:51Amy Poehler?

I'm so thrilled you can do this.

• 2:54Speaker 03

Hold on, let me move my head. There, can you see?

• 2:56Amy Poehler?

Yeah. Wait, do you have my book behind you?

• 2:59Speaker 03

This is where it always lives.

• 3:03Amy Poehler?

For listeners, Blake Lee has very nicely put my book behind him in his bookshelf. And I should say, he's also my editor.

• 3:10Speaker 03

  Yeah, exactly. You're welcome.

• 3:13Amy Poehler?

Blake, let's talk for a second about how we met. Because I think some people will recognize you. But maybe you can let people know how we're friends, how we met.

• 3:23Speaker 03

So Aubrey Plodgett and I were good friends. And she brought me to a dance party at some random club in Hollywood. And she was working on this. It was the first season of the show, Parks, so no one had seen it yet. So you were all out. And I went dancing with you guys and just instantly fell in love with you. And I don't know if you remember this, but do you remember Aubrey like smashed a glass on her foot?

• 3:48Amy Poehler?

  Cut her foot?

• 3:49Speaker 03

And was like, gosh, shit, cut her foot at this club. And so you and I like took her into this bathroom and we're giggling and we're like putting her foot in the sink and we're cleaning it. And it was just like, it was so, one of those like magical nights. And then like two weeks later, Aubrey called me and was like, hey, so that show that I'm doing, like, my character is going to have like a gay best friend. And Amy was like, what about your gay best friend you brought dancing the other night? And then you changed my life because I got to do the show for, you know, a handful of times. And it was the best. It was the best. And it's like, yeah, truly, I feel like every time I see you though, I'm like, thank you. You changed my life.

• 4:25Amy Poehler?

  Blake!

• 4:26Speaker 03

  That was my first job.

• 4:28Amy Poehler?

  It was?

• 4:28Speaker 03

My first acting job. Yeah. And so it was so crazy to be like, to have that. I feel so lucky that that was my first job. And like, it's like wild, there's, I still. Random times, people will like, you're like, are you the gay guy from Parks and Rec? And like, I, I happened once, like, I was, I was peeing at a urinal.

• 4:47Amy Poehler?

  Oh.

• 4:47Speaker 03

And some, like, stranger was just peeing next to me and, like, looked over and he was like, wait, are you on Parks and Rec? This was years after. I'm just peeing next to him, talking about parks.

• 4:57Amy Poehler?

I have to say, I'll never, as a, as a woman with female parts, I'll never, ever understand the etiquette of pe- standing and peeing next to someone. It's so intimate.

• 5:12Speaker 03

It's really intimate. And most people are straight ahead, you know? I feel like most, that's

• 5:17Amy Poehler?

  I don't know.

• 5:18Speaker 03

The etiquette, you know, well, yeah.

• 5:20Amy Poehler?

  I don't know.

• 5:21Speaker 03

Most of the time, it's like you should, I think that that's like the universe thing is like just straight ahead. But every once in a while, you get a, how are you doing? So weird.

• 5:30Amy Poehler?

So weird. Because to be recognized in that moment, it's so vulnerable. I mean, it's just, it's something else.

• 5:40Speaker 03

  It's funny.

• 5:41Amy Poehler?

  I know, it's funny.

• 5:42Speaker 03

  Something else.

• 5:42Amy Poehler?

It's funny. Okay. So, um, we're talking to Dakota today, and I gotta tell you, between you and me, I'm a little nervous because, and excited, because I don't know Dakota that well. I am a huge fan of her work. I think she's an amazing actress. She's so cool and, and speaks so slowly.

• 6:07Amy Poehler?

And ha- has a vibe that I think is very, like, mesmerizing, which is, she seems to not worry too much about getting people's approval. But I might be projecting that. Before we get to your question, what do you think people get wrong about her?

• 6:24Speaker 03

I think that people think she might take herself seriously, and she doesn't. She's, she really is like so goofy and so silly. Ben, my husband, was like saying, like, he was like, when I was saying that I was doing this, he was saying how like, I get to see a version of her that not everyone gets to see because we're. I I I'm I don't know, like, I make. I'm so goofy with her and like, we're just stupid and and I think it's like, I think that that's the thing. I think people might think that she's like this really serious person and she's. She's not, she's so goofy.

• 6:59Amy Poehler?

It's so funny you say that because I, you know, came up with all these comedians and sketch performers and improvisers who everyone. You know, it's like, are they just hilarious all the time? And you're like, no.

• 7:11Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 7:12Amy Poehler?

And then conversely, actors, you know, like, you know, serious actors. There's a lot of people that assume like they're very, very. Introverted and take theirs themselves and their work very seriously. And that's not the case often.

• 7:28Speaker 03

No, it's not. And I have to say, I went, I think, yeah, both times she hosted SNL, I was there. And she, I've never seen her happier. Like, she was like. This is the best thing on the planet. I never want to do anything else. I want to be here every day. And it's that, like, being around funny people.

• 7:49Speaker 03

She just like gets off on that. I think she she like is energized by like. By funny people.

• 7:54Amy Poehler?

Hmm. I love that. Okay. Really helpful to know. So, um, what do you think I should? Do you have a question you want me to ask her today?

• 8:02Speaker 03

Okay, so my question is, what actors did she look up to that she wasn't related to?

• 8:08Amy Poehler?

Oh, very good. Yeah, cuz you know, a lot of people, you know, you know. May not know that she comes from very successful, talented parents that we'll talk about. And grandparents.

• 8:20Speaker 03

  Stepparent.

• 8:22Amy Poehler?

Yes, let's just name it real quick. Tippy head grandmother, Melanie Griffith, mom. Antonio Banderas, stepdad, Don Johnson, dad. That's a, that's, that's a lot. So, yeah. Other than them.

• 8:35Speaker 03

  Other than them.

• 8:36Amy Poehler?

  Mm hmm.

• 8:36Speaker 03

Who, as a kid, were you like, I want, you know, who did you look up to?

• 8:40Amy Poehler?

All right, that's perfect. That's all we need.

• 8:43Speaker 03

  Helps.

• 8:43Amy Poehler?

  It's so, so good.

• 8:44Speaker 03

You're gonna love her and. I'm so excited to hear it.

• 8:48Amy Poehler?

I am so excited to do it. Okay, thank you so much. I'm.

• 8:52Speaker 03

  Have so much fun.

• 8:54Amy Poehler?

Thank you so much, Blake. You're, you look so cute. Is this, is that bookshelf behind you real or are you?

• 9:01Speaker 03

Can you imagine? It was just like a, yeah, I'm in my.

• 9:04Amy Poehler?

It's wallpaper? This is bookshelf wallpaper?

• 9:07Speaker 03

  Just flat, just flat, yeah.

• 9:10Amy Poehler?

Okay, thank you. I love you.

• 9:12Speaker 03

I love you. I'll see you soon.

• 9:13Amy Poehler?

Okay, take care. Bye. Thanks, Blake.

• 9:17Amy Poehler?

• 10:00Speaker 04

  This is so fun.

• 10:05Amy Poehler?

Oh my God, Dakota is... Listeners, Dakota brought a puppy in. First time we've had an animal in the studio. Tell me about this animal person.

• 10:16Speaker 04

She's, um, my dog. And that, uh, bye.

• 10:24Amy Poehler?

  New dog?

• 10:25Speaker 04

Yeah, we rescued her on Saturday from the Santa Barbara Pound. I didn't plan on it.

• 10:33Amy Poehler?

How many dogs do you have?

• 10:34Speaker 04

Well, I had a dog for 17 years. He was 17.

• 10:39Amy Poehler?

  Oh, no.

• 10:40Speaker 04

And he died in... Yeah, there you go.

• 10:42Amy Poehler?

  Oh, my gosh.

• 10:43Speaker 04

  She's a performer.

• 10:43Amy Poehler?

Tokyo is checking out the mic.

• 10:46Speaker 04

He died in December. And I was like, oh, it's gonna be a while. But then I saw her and I just... She's like an angel.

• 10:54Amy Poehler?

What kind of dog is she?

• 10:57Amy Poehler?

  She's really cute.

• 10:59Speaker 04

  Wow, you are being amazing.

• 11:01Amy Poehler?

Tokyo, for listeners, Tokyo is trying to, um,

• 11:06Amy Poehler?

get up on the mic and also lick a little bit of the water. Maybe... Oh, look, he's getting some of the water. Wait.

• 11:15Amy Poehler?

  Let's get this ASMR.

• 11:19Speaker 04

She also hasn't peed in hours, so brace yourself.

• 11:23Amy Poehler?

Okay. Well, we can always just hold her over the table and squeeze.

• 11:28Speaker 04

That's normally what I do, over tables.

• 11:31Amy Poehler?

I'm happy that you brought, by the way, hi.

• 11:33Speaker 04

  Hi.

• 11:34Amy Poehler?

Thank you for coming and doing this. I'm so thrilled that you're here. And I was just saying that you and I have seen each other at different places. We know a lot of the same people, but we've never actually been able to have

• 11:48Speaker 04

  Just a one-on-one chat.

• 11:49Amy Poehler?

No. I know, I'm thrilled that it's this.

• 11:51Speaker 04

Me too. I actually was, I've never done a podcast and I only wanted to talk with you because I feel quite safe.

• 12:00Amy Poehler?

Yeah, I'm not gonna, I'm gonna take very good care of you. Yeah, this is, this podcast is, should be for the listener and for the guest, very stress-free.

• 12:10Speaker 04

  That sounds ideal for me.

• 12:12Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 12:13Speaker 04

  And Tokyo.

• 12:13Amy Poehler?

  And Tokyo.

• 12:14Speaker 04

She is, honestly, she has come alive on camera.

• 12:19Amy Poehler?

Yeah, Tokyo knows how to find the lens.

• 12:21Speaker 04

She normally hides in the back of her crate. She's really timid. And now she's like, here I am.

• 12:28Amy Poehler?

She's a show dog. She's ready to work.

• 12:30Speaker 04

You're an actress, just like your mom.

• 12:35Amy Poehler?

But you grew up with animals all the time, everywhere, right? Like your mom is a big animal person, your grandmother was like a huge animal conserv-, would you say, conservationist?

• 12:45Speaker 04

I guess you could say that.

• 12:46Amy Poehler?

Would you say that about your family?

• 12:47Speaker 04

She rescued lions and tigers and elephants at one point.

• 12:53Amy Poehler?

Did you have lions and tigers around?

• 12:55Speaker 04

She did at her house, yes.

• 12:57Amy Poehler?

  Did you?

• 12:57Speaker 04

My mom did, growing up as well.

• 12:59Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, you did not.

• 13:01Speaker 04

I, at the, by the time I was alive, there was more safety.

• 13:07Amy Poehler?

  In general, in the world.

• 13:08Speaker 04

  Well, yeah, sort of.

• 13:10Amy Poehler?

  Ish, yeah.

• 13:11Speaker 04

Ish, but certainly at my, at Marmar's house, they were no longer inside the house. They were in, they're, still, they're, she's 95, she turned 95 in January and she still had, excuse me.

• 13:26Speaker 04

  She's

• 13:27Amy Poehler?

Tokyo is chewing the end of the

• 13:31Speaker 04

  She's teething.

• 13:33Amy Poehler?

So, I mean, this is why sometimes.

• 13:37Amy Poehler?

  Well, I mean,

• 13:40Amy Poehler?

I don't allow pets in my office. And it's caused a problem, I think, with some of the younger gen.

• 13:49Speaker 04

  Why? Do you hate animals?

• 13:51Amy Poehler?

  I don't. I love, I love them, but

• 13:55Amy Poehler?

I don't have a pet and, um, I don't like pets at work.

• 14:02Speaker 04

  But tell me why, Amy.

• 14:03Amy Poehler?

Okay, okay. It's actually, it's actually a really good question. I feel like it's just a little too distracting when you're working.

• 14:13Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 14:14Amy Poehler?

  And I feel

• 14:15Speaker 04

So you're like a drill sergeant. Do you also keep the AC on full blast, like really cold?

• 14:20Amy Poehler?

Yes, of course. It's 65 degrees in here.

• 14:23Speaker 04

  To keep everyone awake?

• 14:25Amy Poehler?

Yeah. To keep everybody up, so they can produce, produce, produce. Do you not do that?

• 14:33Amy Poehler?

No, I mean, I, I've thought about it because the women at Paperkite at my company, they have dogs. They have great dogs. They want to bring them. And I'm even more of a hypocrite. I've, when I had Suki, I was allowed to bring Suki into, when we were like writing our sketch show back in the 90s, I got to bring Suki into the Comedy Central office. But I'm, I'm gonna say no thanks, but

• 14:59Speaker 04

That's you. Um, dogs are allowed in my office. So if anyone who works for Amy wants to come to tea time.

• 15:08Amy Poehler?

  Bring your dog.

• 15:09Speaker 04

  Bring your dog.

• 15:11Amy Poehler?

But wait, so you grew up, but you're, did you say more and more because Swedish?

• 15:16Speaker 04

Swedish, yeah. Her, her parents, full, full Swedish, full Swedes.

• 15:22Amy Poehler?

My brother lives in Sweden and his kids speak Swedish. And so my nieces and nephews call their grandparents more and more.

• 15:29Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 15:30Amy Poehler?

More, more far. And I got to meet your mom.

• 15:34Speaker 04

  When?

• 15:35Amy Poehler?

  I feel like

• 15:35Speaker 04

  I'm sure you have.

• 15:36Amy Poehler?

We got to, I got to see her at where a lot of blondes meet, which is at the hair salon. And one day,

• 15:45Amy Poehler?

Um, well, more than once, actually. I've been on the same skag as your mom. And she's so lovely. And she did something really generous that day. She was talking to me about, um, skincare. And then went home and brought back all this skincare, like all this cream, and handed it out to everyone at the salon.

• 16:12Amy Poehler?

  It was really, really nice.

• 16:14Speaker 04

  That is so sweet.

• 16:15Amy Poehler?

I know, it was really nice. It was very, very sweet.

• 16:18Speaker 04

  She beats me.

• 16:19Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 16:20Speaker 04

  Um, that's so sweet.

• 16:22Amy Poehler?

Is your mom a nice person like that? She's a generous, nice person?

• 16:25Speaker 04

She's extremely generous. She's always been extremely generous. If you said to her, "I love your shirt," she'd take it off. Yeah. Mostly because she loves to be naked.

• 16:36Speaker 04

  And has great tits.

• 16:37Amy Poehler?

You California kids are something else. I mean, I know so many of you now, like Maya and Rashida and you, like people that grew up in California.

• 16:45Speaker 04

  Where did you grow up?

• 16:46Amy Poehler?

  Like, outside of Boston.

• 16:47Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 16:48Amy Poehler?

In a suburb. And there was like something about, I used to watch movies, like Karate Kid. And the kids would be in school in California. And it was like, what the fuck is this life? Like, their lockers are outside. Like, it's sunny.

• 17:06Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 17:07Amy Poehler?

And they walk outside from class to class.

• 17:10Speaker 04

So I didn't fully grow up in California. I was always like, my parents divorced when I was six, and they were both actors, or are actors. And, um, my, so I'd spend, the sort of divorce deal was two weeks, and two weeks. I was big at that time. Um, so it was, I would do like two weeks on location wherever my mom was, and then two weeks on wherever my dad was. And that was a lot. He was living full-time pretty much in Colorado, just in Aspen for a long time. And then he moved to San Francisco. So the first full year of school that I did in a school, not like traveling with a tutor, was fourth grade.

• 17:52Amy Poehler?

So when you think of your hometown, where do you think of?

• 17:55Speaker 04

I think of Woody Creek, Colorado.

• 17:57Amy Poehler?

  Hmm, what was that like?

• 17:59Speaker 04

  The best.

• 18:00Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 18:00Speaker 04

It was the best. We like rode dirt bikes all over. And I lived on, in Woody Creek. And there were two girls my age that lived up the road. So those are the girls that I would know. Now, one of them I don't keep in touch with as much, but if we saw each other, it'd be the same. And, um, but it's, it was, it was just fun. We'd like ride horses to each other's house and tie them up outside. Or dirt bikes and we'd snowboard. Well, I actually hated snowboarding so much. To grow up in Colorado and like hate skiing and snowboarding is.

• 18:33Amy Poehler?

Yeah, I was just in Colorado. Tina and I just did a show at Red Rocks.

• 18:37Speaker 04

  Fun.

• 18:38Amy Poehler?

So fun, although it was pouring rain and thirty-two degrees, but it was still really fun. But everyone had, like, everyone had their outdoor gear so set.

• 18:49Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 18:50Amy Poehler?

Like, every single person had their like hand warmers.

• 18:52Speaker 04

And it all comes in like a tiny little bag. It's just like folds up.

• 18:57Amy Poehler?

And it was like pouring rain and they're like, let's just go to the rain. Like, they knew exactly how to be outside.

• 19:02Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 19:02Amy Poehler?

  They love outside.

• 19:03Speaker 04

  Yeah, I love outside.

• 19:05Amy Poehler?

You love outside, but no skiing. How come?

• 19:07Speaker 04

  Because it sucks.

• 19:08Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 19:09Speaker 04

And it's cold and it hurts.

• 19:11Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, it really hurts.

• 19:12Speaker 04

Mm-hmm. I have nightmares about skiing.

• 19:14Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 19:15Speaker 04

I had one recently. I'm just remembering it now.

• 19:17Amy Poehler?

  Ooh, tell us about it.

• 19:18Speaker 04

  Well, no.

• 19:21Speaker 04

That's not interesting. When people talk about their dreams.

• 19:24Amy Poehler?

People talking about their dreams. It's like people talking about their improv shows. You're like, mm-hmm, and then what happened?

• 19:30Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 19:31Amy Poehler?

I'm fascinated by dreams because I think we're similar in that I love sleep.

• 19:37Speaker 04

  Oh, God, so much.

• 19:38Amy Poehler?

And I know you do too.

• 19:39Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 19:40Amy Poehler?

And I've seen you talk about it. And to get to dreams, you have to get to sleep, like. Like, but I know that that sounds stupid, but most people don't dream. They don't sleep well enough to even dream, which is very sad.

• 19:54Speaker 04

  That is really sad.

• 19:56Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 19:56Speaker 04

I actually had a dream the other night. Sorry, that.

• 20:00Amy Poehler?

Let's hear it. Let's hear it.

• 20:02Speaker 04

Chris was like, that's a really good pitch for a movie. So Matty Healy from the nineteen seventy-five.

• 20:09Amy Poehler?

  Yes, familiar.

• 20:10Speaker 04

  Was in my dream.

• 20:11Amy Poehler?

  Great.

• 20:11Speaker 04

  And he was murdering people.

• 20:13Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 20:14Speaker 04

  And

• 20:17Speaker 04

he was on the run. He was himself. He was Matty Healy as himself. And when the, the people were looking for him, they were cops, maybe, or I don't know. He would turn into a piece of asparagus.

• 20:37Amy Poehler?

And people would just run past him like that kind of thing?

• 20:40Speaker 04

No one would. He'd just be like.

• 20:47Amy Poehler?

This is a really good idea.

• 20:48Speaker 04

  It's a pretty good movie.

• 20:49Amy Poehler?

It's like A24 would be all over that.

• 20:52Speaker 04

And I was trying to find him. I was like, Maddie, Maddie. And I just saw like these two kind of poles in a bed. And I was like, Maddie? And the sheets came down and it was him as an asparagus and Angelina Jolie as an asparagus.

• 21:04Amy Poehler?

What? She's in this too? Let's make this movie.

• 21:09Speaker 04

And then they left in a helicopter together as a asparagus.

• 21:14Amy Poehler?

That is such a weird ass dream.

• 21:16Speaker 04

  I know.

• 21:16Amy Poehler?

You might be getting too much sleep. Cause you get a lot of sleep.

• 21:21Speaker 04

  Let's ask America.

• 21:22Amy Poehler?

Okay, so America, let's ask Dakota. How much sleep do you get a night?

• 21:28Speaker 04

If I am not working, I can, it's like somewhere, somewhere between 10 and 13 hours.

• 21:37Amy Poehler?

  Incredible.

• 21:38Speaker 04

Incredible. But like 10 is normal for me.

• 21:42Amy Poehler?

And any sleep aids? Do you take anything to go to sleep?

• 21:45Speaker 04

  No.

• 21:45Amy Poehler?

Incredible. I, that's aspirational. Because you've traveled so much and been around so much, you must have a good sense of like how to acclimate quickly to wherever you are. Do you think you do?

• 21:58Speaker 04

I try to just not think about it. I heard arnica is really good for jet lag.

• 22:04Amy Poehler?

  Smearing it where?

• 22:07Speaker 04

  Oh, in your vagina.

• 22:10Amy Poehler?

Put it right in your vagina.

• 22:11Speaker 04

And you put arnica up your butt?

• 22:13Amy Poehler?

You wake up and you're in another country.

• 22:18Amy Poehler?

You don't even have to get on the plane.

• 22:19Speaker 04

It's crazy. Um, this is a new trick.

• 22:23Amy Poehler?

  But you can swallow arnica?

• 22:25Speaker 04

Little pellets. Yeah, like homeopathic arnica. Yeah.

• 22:27Amy Poehler?

Okay, are you a homeopathic gal? Like, do you like? Yeah. What kind of stuff do you like that is pellets and creams and stuff? I mean, I feel like that again is, I don't mean, I don't mean to, to generalize, but it does feel like when I moved to California and I meet California kids, they love their homeopathic.

• 22:49Speaker 04

  Vaccinated and I.

• 22:51Amy Poehler?

  Yep, a lot of that.

• 22:52Speaker 04

  Never take antibiotics.

• 22:53Amy Poehler?

I never take, and I don't believe in medicine, but I do think that, you know, tea tree oil will get rid of my gallstones or whatever.

• 23:03Amy Poehler?

But do you, are you a homeopathic person? Do you do, do you take supplements?

• 23:06Speaker 04

I take supplements, yeah. I take, um,

• 23:12Speaker 04

  supplements like Xanax and,

• 23:17Speaker 04

  just like natural.

• 23:18Amy Poehler?

Just natural things, yeah. But, uh, did you, like, can you, I know this is a weird question, but I wanted to talk about it with you because what I love so much about you is the way that you're able to, like, handle silence?

• 23:38Speaker 04

  Mm-hmm.

• 23:40Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 23:42Amy Poehler?

How did you learn how to do that?

• 23:43Speaker 04

I think I learned early on in interview situations that if I speak out of context or, like, it doesn't go well. I think I just have been so scared of saying anything but answering the question or not, or trying to not answer the question.

• 24:01Amy Poehler?

Very, very, like, honest, upfront, and truthful when you do answer questions. I don't, I don't find you evasive at all.

• 24:08Speaker 04

  No. I'm not.

• 24:10Amy Poehler?

So was that always been your?

• 24:12Speaker 04

Although, you know what? I did once do that lie detector test for Vanity Fair. I'm doing one again.

• 24:18Amy Poehler?

  Did you beat it?

• 24:19Speaker 04

  I lied and I passed.

• 24:22Amy Poehler?

Well, let's be honest. I mean, that's not a professional person running. Do you think there's a real professional person? I mean, they have them dressed up as a suit, but we don't know.

• 24:31Speaker 04

I've wa, I've watched other people and they're like, that's a lie. That's a lie. And you see the thing, and I fully lied and...

• 24:39Amy Poehler?

  And they didn't catch you?

• 24:41Speaker 04

  No.

• 24:41Amy Poehler?

Do you think you have low blood pressure?

• 24:43Speaker 04

I really, yeah, I do. That must be it.

• 24:46Amy Poehler?

  Truly, like...

• 24:46Speaker 04

I would be a good spy.

• 24:48Amy Poehler?

  You would?

• 24:48Speaker 04

Yeah. I'll do that now. You heard it here first.

• 24:52Amy Poehler?

You're in Tokyo, you're in Tokyo, out on the road. But it's true because there is some kind of, you're right. There's like a, um, an energy where I don't feel a grasping energy from you, ever.

• 25:05Speaker 04

No, that's kind, thank you. I don't want to have a grasping energy.

• 25:09Amy Poehler?

Well, a lot of people don't want to have it, but they just do. Like, they just can't figure out, you know, it's like they're just... Managing their anxiety in that way and it comes out in that way. But I've always felt that about you, that you don't have that, or, or you're really good at, at managing it.

• 25:29Speaker 04

I definitely have anxiety, I, but it makes me hyper-present. So maybe that's what it is.

• 25:35Amy Poehler?

Ooh, say more about that, that's cool.

• 25:37Speaker 04

I don't know, it makes me just like, I'm so here. I'm so, I'm not, my brain doesn't go to a million places trying to figure out what to say next. I'm just like, very present. And that happens also on, you know, like, talk shows or things, I get nervous and I have to go on stage. I have terrible stage fright.

• 25:55Amy Poehler?

  You do?

• 25:56Speaker 04

  Oh my god.

• 25:56Amy Poehler?

  Shocked.

• 25:57Speaker 04

Oh my, like, an awards show is my nightmare. I have to do breathing exercises before, like, if I have to present something or give a speech.

• 26:10Speaker 04

Thinking about it makes me sweat.

• 26:12Amy Poehler?

What is it, what's the, like, what's the, what would be the nightmare you'd have about it? What's the fear? You'd, uh, say something wrong?

• 26:18Speaker 04

No, it's like a physical manifestation. Like, my kneecaps start quivering and I, and my voice gets kind of shaky and I get like,

• 26:28Speaker 04

I'm, I, like, say if I have to give a speech, I'll be like, I don't know how to read.

• 26:35Amy Poehler?

  Like, I'm so sorry, I can't read.

• 26:37Speaker 04

I suddenly don't know how to read.

• 26:38Amy Poehler?

So what is it about the camera and acting in front of the camera where you don't get that feeling?

• 26:44Speaker 04

  I have no idea.

• 26:45Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 26:47Speaker 04

I feel like very, very free and safe. It's really weird.

• 26:56Amy Poehler?

Do you think it's like, from growing up on set? Like, do you, you, you kind of explained that when you were a kid, sets were home base.

• 27:05Speaker 04

Yeah, I mean, I saw that, I thought they were the most magical places.

• 27:10Amy Poehler?

  You did?

• 27:10Speaker 04

Oh my god, I loved being on set.

• 27:13Amy Poehler?

What did you like about it?

• 27:14Speaker 04

I loved everything, like, I just thought it was the coolest. I loved the trailers, I loved base camp, I loved set, I loved, like, the, the ring of when it would be rolling and I'd be so excited to go in when it, when the red light went off and go and see what my mom looked like and what clothes she was wearing. And I guess that's how it felt, it, it started to build in my mind as a sacred space. It was like a safe place to be, and wherever the cameras were in the scene. Because it is, really, it's like a beautiful. Magical space if you want it to be.

• 27:51Amy Poehler?

And what was your first professional job?

• 27:55Speaker 04

Well, I guess it was the social network when I was eighteen, nineteen. But I did a part in a movie that my mom was in when I was nine.

• 28:05Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 28:05Speaker 04

And I took that very seriously.

• 28:07Amy Poehler?

  Hmm.

• 28:07Speaker 04

  That I was a professional.

• 28:09Amy Poehler?

You did. You analyzed your dreams.

• 28:12Speaker 04

I worked with a dialect coach.

• 28:14Amy Poehler?

  Hmm.

• 28:15Speaker 04

To have a little southern accent.

• 28:17Amy Poehler?

And did you, what do you remember about that? Did you feel like you nailed it at nine?

• 28:22Speaker 04

Um, I think I nailed it.

• 28:24Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 28:25Speaker 04

I think I felt like I nailed it as well. And I loved it.

• 28:28Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 28:29Speaker 04

  So much.

• 28:29Amy Poehler?

That's cool. Do you feel like it was in your blood? Like, do you always feel like ever since you were a little kid? Like, it was inevitable that you were gonna be an actor?

• 28:38Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 28:38Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 28:39Speaker 04

  I think so.

• 28:40Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 28:41Speaker 04

Definitely for me. And it's funny, my siblings, my oldest brother acts sometimes. And he went to, he studied acting. And um, my, one of my sisters is an amazing sort of photographer. And my other sister wants to be a director. So it's definitely in our family. But like, my mom, my dad, my grandmother, my grandfather, they were all actors.

• 29:09Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 29:10Speaker 04

And like, working actors, all with their own special magic sauce.

• 29:14Amy Poehler?

I also am remembering too, that I met your mom, I saw your mom again when your stepdad hosted SNL. Cause I was there. Antonio Banderas, your stepdad.

• 29:24Speaker 04

  What year was that?

• 29:25Amy Poehler?

That was probably two thousand and, I'm pretty bad with this kind of stuff. But it was pre-baby for me. So it was like two thousand, maybe four, five, six, something like that. And delightful, so nice.

• 29:43Amy Poehler?

  Smelled great.

• 29:44Speaker 04

  Yeah, always.

• 29:45Amy Poehler?

  Yeah. And

• 29:46Speaker 04

She wears mousse de kartier. I don't know if they make that anymore even.

• 29:50Amy Poehler?

  Mousse de kartier?

• 29:51Speaker 04

  Mm-hmm, mousse.

• 29:52Amy Poehler?

That means the moose cart in English? And what did Antonio wear? Because he smelled great, too.

• 30:00Speaker 04

  Um.

• 30:01Amy Poehler?

  We don't know.

• 30:02Speaker 04

I don't know, but actually now I think he has his own cologne or like perfume line and it's so cute and funny to me. It's like Stallion by Antonio Banderas. Or something.

• 30:16Amy Poehler?

  Perfect.

• 30:16Speaker 04

  Or like, um, Dark Cloud.

• 30:20Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 30:21Speaker 04

  Sexy Cloud.

• 30:22Amy Poehler?

  Sexy Cloud. Sexy Dark Cloud.

• 30:24Speaker 04

  Sexy Stallion.

• 30:28Amy Poehler?

He did a scene, I did a scene with him and Chris Parnell on SNL that I loved where we were like describing wine and just describing like the adjectives of wine, which is very similar. And there was a line where he's like, "Do I sense a hint of swordplay?"

• 30:47Amy Poehler?

  It was so good.

• 30:48Speaker 04

  That's funny.

• 30:49Amy Poehler?

You were so great on SNL and I know you loved doing it. What did you love about doing it?

• 30:54Speaker 04

I love SNL so much. Well, you know, I like, I mean, even moments sitting here talking to you, I'm like, I can't believe I'm sitting here talking to you.

• 31:03Amy Poehler?

  Come on.

• 31:03Speaker 04

I know, I'm serious. It's so, it was such a huge part of shaping like my, my wanting to work in comedy at all. And then the, the fact that I've even gotten to do it once, but twice, I like, that is the, it's my favorite place in the world. It's that same kind of thing of like, I want to be in there.

• 31:25Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, but are you nervous?

• 31:27Speaker 04

You're not, are you? So nervous.

• 31:29Amy Poehler?

  Okay, great.

• 31:30Speaker 04

  So nervous, but

• 31:31Amy Poehler?

  You push past.

• 31:31Speaker 04

In like a fit of glee.

• 31:33Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 31:33Speaker 04

  Absolute glee. I love it.

• 31:36Amy Poehler?

What do you love about it?

• 31:39Speaker 04

I think I love how, um, everyone is, is just trying to make the best thing and the funniest thing and, and everyone is so smart.

• 31:52Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 31:52Speaker 04

And the energy there is, is

• 31:56Speaker 04

Is like, it's the most important thing anyone has ever done in their lives and yet we're, it's just funny.

• 32:02Amy Poehler?

Yeah, it is like a theater camp vibe.

• 32:04Speaker 04

  Totally.

• 32:05Amy Poehler?

Where it's like, oh no, we have a show, we have to do it.

• 32:07Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 32:08Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 32:08Speaker 04

And then I really like all of the like, behind the scenes gossip and the like, these people don't get along and this is really hard and everyone's really tired and

• 32:19Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 32:19Speaker 04

Drinking, like going, when I, I was there last year and going around in like the first couple of days and meeting with all the writers and they had, it was like 8pm and everyone had just gotten there and like, I can't imagine, I can't imagine that. Like everyone had really big iced coffees.

• 32:38Amy Poehler?

  Mm hmm.

• 32:39Speaker 04

  That they just got.

• 32:39Amy Poehler?

  Just starting.

• 32:40Speaker 04

  Just starting.

• 32:41Amy Poehler?

That was like, the hours of that show are like, left over from cocaine days, basically, I think, but they're just, it's crazy that you don't start writing. Or, I mean, some people do, but the, the majority of people don't start writing until Tuesday night and we even talk about, there's this feeling that happens sometimes on Tuesday nights, which is this panic and you don't know where it's coming from and then you're like, oh, this is just writing night fear. Yeah. And you walk around and everyone's pitching you ideas that they haven't even written yet.

• 33:13Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 33:13Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 33:14Speaker 04

But it's, it's a magical place, it's like Disneyland. It's my most favorite place I've ever been. Uh, I just, I don't know what it is, I love it so much. I watch it all the time. I go back and watch your sketches, I wa, I watch it all, it's very weird. I should stop. I should go.

• 33:35Amy Poehler?

  Wait, is, is Tokyo asleep?

• 33:37Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 33:38Amy Poehler?

Tokyo has completely fallen asleep. And I mean, listeners, you can't see, but it's just the cutest dog in the world.

• 33:46Speaker 04

  She's

• 33:47Amy Poehler?

  Sitting on Dakota's lap.

• 33:48Speaker 04

  So special.

• 33:49Amy Poehler?

You really are making me think that.

• 33:52Speaker 04

Do you know what's funny is?

• 33:53Amy Poehler?

Animals should still not be allowed in a workplace.

• 33:55Speaker 04

  Did you notice my nails?

• 33:57Amy Poehler?

  Oh yeah.

• 33:58Speaker 04

  I have a French manicure.

• 33:59Amy Poehler?

  Ooh.

• 34:00Speaker 04

  Which is

• 34:00Amy Poehler?

  La la.

• 34:01Speaker 04

Very not me, but Tokyo has one.

• 34:08Speaker 04

I thought it would be funny if we had the same nails. Oh yeah, Tokyo does have them. Oh come on.

• 34:20Speaker 04

Oh my, oh come on. I think it's because she has a calcium deficiency. Yeah. But she has a little natural French manicure. Boy, she's cute. She's really cute. Anyway.

• 38:46Amy Poehler?

So we do this thing where we talk well behind people's backs. And we ask someone that knows our guest, you know, what they think I should ask you.

• 38:59Speaker 04

  How to ruin their life.

• 38:59Amy Poehler?

How to ruin their life. We ask, yeah, we all get all the dirt. And I talked to Blake. Did he tell you?

• 39:06Speaker 04

No, but I heard you were gonna do that. And I think he thought it was a surprise.

• 39:10Amy Poehler?

Oh, so he didn't tell you?

• 39:11Speaker 04

  He didn't tell me.

• 39:12Amy Poehler?

  He's such a good boy.

• 39:13Speaker 04

  I know.

• 39:13Amy Poehler?

  He's such a nice person.

• 39:14Speaker 04

  What did you talk about?

• 39:15Amy Poehler?

So Blake wanted me to ask you, who besides your family, when you were growing up, who did you look up to as an actor, actor and actress? Like, who did you, like, what actor and actress did you admire?

• 39:30Speaker 04

  Blake wanted to ask that?

• 39:31Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 39:35Speaker 04

He's, did he Google like most basic questions to ask an actress?

• 39:43Speaker 04

  That's the question?

• 39:44Amy Poehler?

You can, you can say pass.

• 39:46Speaker 04

Um, okay, no, I'll answer it. I, uh, recently I actually exchanged texts. Well, I got a voice note from Sandra Bullock.

• 39:57Amy Poehler?

  Wow.

• 39:58Speaker 04

I know, because I don't know if you know, but I won the Razzie for worst actress.

• 40:02Amy Poehler?

Oh, my God, you did? Congrats.

• 40:04Speaker 04

  Thank you.

• 40:05Amy Poehler?

That's a really good, um, there's a lot of good people that have won that.

• 40:08Speaker 04

  Thank you so much.

• 40:10Amy Poehler?

What did you win it for?

• 40:11Speaker 04

Uh, this really good movie called Madame Web.

• 40:14Amy Poehler?

  Oh, my God, yes.

• 40:15Speaker 04

I don't know if you've heard of it.

• 40:16Amy Poehler?

And you, did you accept the Razzie?

• 40:17Speaker 04

Oh, yeah. I asked if they'd send it to me.

• 40:19Amy Poehler?

  That's incredible.

• 40:21Speaker 04

Um, but Sandra Bullock sent me a voice note being like, I heard you are in the Razzie Club and we should have brunch. We should have a, like, a monthly brunch. Um, because I guess she won that when, like, the year that she won the Oscar as well.

• 40:37Amy Poehler?

  Are you kidding me?

• 40:38Speaker 04

It was like in the same year, I think. But I freaked out getting this message from her because that, she's so iconic.

• 40:46Amy Poehler?

  Yes, yes.

• 40:47Speaker 04

To me, as like a movie star. I was like, oh, my God. It was just crazy. But, but I, I don't know, like, I, I grew up.

• 40:58Speaker 04

Being fascinated by, first of all, younger actresses that worked with my mom. So like Thora Birch, Christina Ricci. I was always like, oh, you can do that as like a teenager? Cause I really wanted to. And then Diane Keaton, I was obsessed with, um, still obsessed with. Um, and then like SNL, a lot of SNL. But, yeah. Great question, Blake.

• 41:30Amy Poehler?

I mean, can I, can I talk about that Razzie thing for one more second though? Because why I love talking about that with you is because I think your career is so super diverse and always interesting. And you pick really big movies and you pick small movies. And it feels like you pick what you wanna do. Like it feels like you really go with your gut about what you wanna make. And I feel like you, handling it that way is the most powerful and like interesting way because if we're lucky, we're gonna have a really long career. Like that's the goal, right? Is to stick around.

• 42:12Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 42:12Amy Poehler?

So this idea of like, we have had our last, you know, our last best thing, or that this thing didn't hit, but I don't know. How do you ride the wave of that? Like you have a sense of humor, I guess, about your work. That's important.

• 42:26Speaker 04

Yeah, it's so, it's, I think about this a lot because, and I know you, you have experienced this because everybody is going through it all the time now, but you, you, like, we don't have control over how something turns out.

• 42:39Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 42:40Speaker 04

Anymore. No one does. Like very, very few directors or actors, like Tom Cruise maybe does.

• 42:49Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 42:50Speaker 04

You know, like, but I don't, I've signed on to a movie that is, by the end of shooting it, a completely different script than what I attached to. And that is a wild thing to, to, like a crazy journey to go on as a, as an artist. Cause you're like, okay, I'm doing something like with my actual body and my actual mind and my heart, my emotions, I'm like using things. And, and it's just being taken.

• 43:22Speaker 04

And fucked with, but you can't do anything about it. Like, what am I gonna do? Fucking cry about Madame Web? No?

• 43:29Amy Poehler?

  No.

• 43:30Speaker 04

  I'm gonna laugh.

• 43:31Amy Poehler?

You're gonna go to the Razzies and you're gonna spike the...

• 43:33Speaker 04

They don't have an in-person award.

• 43:37Speaker 04

  I wish they did.

• 43:38Amy Poehler?

  They should.

• 43:39Speaker 04

Oh, my god, I wish they did.

• 43:41Amy Poehler?

That would be amazing if you went there and then you just gave an epic speech and then you just spiked the award. And you're just like...

• 43:47Speaker 04

  Oh, god.

• 43:48Amy Poehler?

  You just threw it down.

• 43:49Speaker 04

Sandra Bullock said she asked for the award and like, picked it up and then they called her and asked her to give it back because they only had one.

• 43:57Amy Poehler?

By the way, who is the Razzie committee?

• 44:00Speaker 04

  I know.

• 44:01Amy Poehler?

I'd love to, I'd love to, I'd love to hear, I'd love to have the Razzie committee show themselves.

• 44:06Speaker 04

  I know.

• 44:07Amy Poehler?

So I'm gonna do a lip balm break.

• 44:10Speaker 04

  It's really a funny thing.

• 44:12Amy Poehler?

But, um, I mean, I feel like this probably, you probably had to figure that out with Fifty Shades of Grey, right?

• 44:18Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 44:18Amy Poehler?

That was another thing. It was like, okay, this project, it's a big project, I'm signing on, and now I have to give up control. And now I'm in this and it's gonna be a lot of years of my life and I gotta figure out how to...

• 44:31Speaker 04

Yeah, that was a wild journey. Very, very interesting. That was another version of signing on to something that was one thing and it turned out to be another. But I'm so grateful.

• 44:42Amy Poehler?

I was gonna say, with time, how do you look at it now?

• 44:44Speaker 04

I, I mean, I, I'm so grateful for that experience. The first movie with Sam Taylor-Johnson directing was really extraordinary, as an, as an experience extraordinary, and I think the movie is as good a version of it as it could be.

• 45:02Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 45:03Speaker 04

Um, but it was challenging, like, it was, I signed on to a script that was different than what we ended up shooting.

• 45:11Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 45:12Speaker 04

  Written by a different person.

• 45:16Speaker 04

It was, you know, and then you, then you're attached, you're signed a contract, so you're in. Uh, signed on to do it with a different actor. It was like a different thing and then it all changed and... And I was just in it and um but it was so, I was so young. I was, I think I turned twenty four while we were shooting.

• 45:41Amy Poehler?

  Wow.

• 45:42Speaker 04

And I was so like brave. I just feel proud of myself for being brave and being um interested in like, I don't know, it just felt wild and and it also like there were no intimacy coordinators then or anything like that.

• 46:00Amy Poehler?

That was not that long ago too, like

• 46:02Speaker 04

  No.

• 46:02Amy Poehler?

  that a lot has changed.

• 46:04Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 46:05Amy Poehler?

Yeah. And there was an expectation of just like figure it out yourself in real time in front of everyone.

• 46:11Speaker 04

  Mm hmm.

• 46:12Amy Poehler?

  It's intense.

• 46:12Speaker 04

Mm hmm. Yeah, it was, it was a lot.

• 46:16Amy Poehler?

Who has been your favorite director, someone that you just think, when, you know, you've worked with a lot of great directors and a lot of great actors. Who's someone that when you think about, you think that was just that experience was so good. I loved it.

• 46:29Speaker 04

I've had that a lot and I've had the opposite a lot.

• 46:32Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 46:33Speaker 04

But I loved Celine Song. She is

• 46:37Amy Poehler?

I love her. I'm so excited about this movie.

• 46:39Speaker 04

  A spectacular director filmmaker.

• 46:42Amy Poehler?

For people who don't know, she, she wrote and directed Past Lives with um Greta Lee a few years ago and she is the, did she write your new film or just?

• 46:52Speaker 04

  She wrote and directed.

• 46:53Amy Poehler?

  The materialist.

• 46:54Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 46:54Amy Poehler?

It's her second film and it is coming out. It's actually, I mean, it's the reason why you're here. Let's be honest.

• 46:59Speaker 04

  That's true.

• 47:00Amy Poehler?

  It is.

• 47:00Speaker 04

  June thirteenth.

• 47:02Amy Poehler?

  Thank you, June thirteenth.

• 47:03Speaker 04

  I've been trained.

• 47:04Amy Poehler?

Tell me why you love Celine. She's, she's an incredible director.

• 47:08Speaker 04

She's amazing. She comes, well, her, she has a, her background is, she's a playwright. Um, and I think there's a different sort of control that she has over what she wants, which is really such a relief. Like, it's nice to work with somebody who knows exactly what they want from every single frame of the movie. I was like, oh, yes.

• 47:34Amy Poehler?

So do you think she's, you mean, she's had it in her head? She's like storyboarded it in her head? Or she's just able to communicate what she wants emotionally?

• 47:42Speaker 04

She's able to communicate what she wants emotionally. And we, we spent a couple of months going through every line of the script. And she would, she was like, this is, what she means here is this. And yeah, what do you think about the, like, we, we just talked about it. We talked through everything. And, and then on the day, we, it was like we had one brain.

• 48:03Amy Poehler?

  Have you ever directed?

• 48:05Speaker 04

I have directed a short that Blake was in, actually.

• 48:10Amy Poehler?

Do you want to do more?

• 48:12Speaker 04

  I would, yeah.

• 48:12Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 48:13Speaker 04

Do you want to direct primarily?

• 48:15Amy Poehler?

I like it right now more than acting, for sure.

• 48:18Speaker 04

I think about you for things all the time.

• 48:20Amy Poehler?

Really? What should we work on together?

• 48:22Speaker 04

I have a, I have a, I have something that I think you would love.

• 48:25Amy Poehler?

Email it to me right now, I'll read it.

• 48:27Speaker 04

Okay, I'll email it to you later.

• 48:29Amy Poehler?

Oh, great. That would be so fun. I would love to work with you. I mean, I feel, well, we should talk about materialists because it is a movie about,

• 48:39Amy Poehler?

you know, two men being in love with you. Congratulations on your first documentary.

• 48:46Speaker 04

  Thank you.

• 48:48Amy Poehler?

Well, what, Pedro Pascal, Chris Evans, and you, what is the movie about?

• 48:54Speaker 04

Um, the movie is about a woman who's a matchmaker in New York City. And she, which is funny because Celine was a matchmaker in New York City for six months. This is where the movie comes from. She did it on the side to pay the bills because she was like a struggling playwright. So I play Lucy, who's the matchmaker. And she's just the best at her job and really good at sort of assigning people as mates.

• 49:18Amy Poehler?

  Mm hmm.

• 49:18Speaker 04

Um, based on pretty surface level criteria, like height and income and, um, hairline. Like, that's what people are out there looking for. It's not about a soul connection. It's about like, do you, do you tick my boxes of what I want, what I think my life should look like?

• 49:40Amy Poehler?

  Mm hmm.

• 49:41Speaker 04

And, um, She then kind of goes on her own journey of what you would think is that she doesn't really have, she's not really invested in people's souls, but you realize she is and she cares about these people that she's working with and how their lives turn out and if they're happy. And then she has to kind of figure out for herself what is, what is more important really, truly in this life? Is it to achieve the life that you think you want? Or is it to actually be seen and loved?

• 50:15Amy Poehler?

It's interesting you say that because it feels like, oh, of course you want be, right? Of course, you want to be seen and loved, but there is something about

• 50:26Amy Poehler?

in life, how relationships help you get some, get to be some version of yourself that you want. Like whether it's you want to be, you want to have kids, or you want to be married, or you want to live in France, or whatever is the version of the thing of, of your fantasy of your life. Relationships help you get that.

• 50:42Speaker 04

  Mm hmm.

• 50:43Amy Poehler?

And you're right, sometimes it's a trade off, like I get this thing, but I don't get this thing. Or I feel seen but, and loved, but the person doesn't fit into some version of my.

• 50:52Speaker 04

  Dream life.

• 50:53Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 50:54Speaker 04

  Yeah, or my ideal, whatever.

• 50:56Amy Poehler?

What, when you have to do sex scenes, like, how do you psych yourself up for that?

• 51:03Speaker 04

  Amy, I don't have to.

• 51:04Amy Poehler?

  You don't?

• 51:05Speaker 04

I'm like always psyched up for sex.

• 51:07Amy Poehler?

You're psyched up? Yeah, fuck yeah.

• 51:12Speaker 04

Psyched up? Is that a thing?

• 51:16Amy Poehler?

  What do you mean?

• 51:17Speaker 04

But like, maybe you just feel like I'm psyched?

• 51:19Amy Poehler?

  But you know, like.

• 51:20Speaker 04

  Psyched up?

• 51:21Amy Poehler?

  Today, you're like, 7:30 AM, let's do it. Like, that's a lot. It's hard.

• 51:25Speaker 04

  Pound town?

• 51:26Amy Poehler?

Let's go to pound town, everybody. Let's get the lights in here. It's a lot.

• 51:32Speaker 04

  Oh, God.

• 51:33Amy Poehler?

  You're psyched.

• 51:36Speaker 04

I recently did a movie a few months ago and we had an intimacy coordinator on set and it was the first time I have ever worked with one.

• 51:44Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 51:45Speaker 04

  And she was really great.

• 51:48Amy Poehler?

  Great.

• 51:48Speaker 04

  It was so cool.

• 51:49Amy Poehler?

  What did she add?

• 51:50Speaker 04

Cause I'm so used to, I'm so used to just, you know, like it's a sex scene. It's not like sexy. It doesn't feel good.

• 51:59Amy Poehler?

Most people don't know. I'm being serious. Like I'm not, like, no.

• 52:04Speaker 04

  Oh, right.

• 52:04Amy Poehler?

A sexy, a fake sex scene is a, it's like being an astronaut. Like so few people have done it.

• 52:10Speaker 04

  That's really true. You're right. I'm sorry.

• 52:13Amy Poehler?

  It's okay. I'm not.

• 52:14Speaker 04

You know, okay, let me, you want me to explain?

• 52:18Amy Poehler?

  Of course.

• 52:19Speaker 04

  Okay, so a sex scene.

• 52:24Amy Poehler?

Hold on, I gotta write, I gotta get this down.

• 52:26Speaker 04

  You gonna take notes?

• 52:27Amy Poehler?

I'm gonna take notes. Go ahead.

• 52:28Speaker 04

  When two actors

• 52:31Speaker 04

  pretend

• 52:32Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 52:33Speaker 04

  that they're having sex.

• 52:34Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 52:35Speaker 04

And you do all the things except have sex.

• 52:38Amy Poehler?

Right. And that's important for people to know.

• 52:40Speaker 04

And you have to make sounds like you're having sex.

• 52:42Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 52:42Speaker 04

  And you're not yet.

• 52:43Amy Poehler?

  Yet.

• 52:48Amy Poehler?

So when you approach a scene, you're like, today's the day. You don't feel stressed? You feel, like, how do you feel about it? And then what was the difference with this coordinator? What made it different?

• 53:00Amy Poehler?

Cause you're right. You've done a lot and you know how to handle yourself during it, I guess is what you're saying.

• 53:05Speaker 04

Yeah. Well, first I think it depends on like who is the character? And who's the character supposed to be to the audience? Is she like a super idolized hot girl? Is she like a housewife? Is she lonely? Is she scared? Is she, is she conservative? You know, like it doesn't, so that's obviously character work. But then, so like certain prep, I guess, would go into it. Like I, I wanna feel good in my body.

• 53:35Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 53:37Speaker 04

If I'm showing my body. I've never felt, felt, um, like my mom raised me to be really, really proud of my body and, and love my body. So I've always felt so grateful for that, especially in my work, because I can use it and it feels like real.

• 53:58Amy Poehler?

How did she do that? Because I think a lot of mothers want to make sure they do that for their daughters, but they don't know how to do that in practice. Would it be the way she would speak about it with you? Or was there other ways that she made you feel that way?

• 54:10Speaker 04

I think it was the way she spoke about it with me. And also, she was very like honest and open about um body stuff.

• 54:22Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 54:23Speaker 04

And like getting my period, you know, like really good about it.

• 54:28Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 54:29Speaker 04

And like I have friends whose mothers never spoke to them about that stuff. And it's so hard and sad. Just got very warm on my lap. She may have peed on me.

• 54:39Amy Poehler?

  Oh, my gosh, Tokyo.

• 54:40Speaker 04

  But I don't think so.

• 54:41Amy Poehler?

  It's okay.

• 54:42Speaker 04

  It's all right.

• 54:42Amy Poehler?

And listeners, Tokyo, not me. If you're not watching.

• 54:48Speaker 04

It just got very warm on my lap. Amy peed on me.

• 54:50Amy Poehler?

  It was not me.

• 54:54Speaker 04

  So.

• 54:54Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 54:55Speaker 04

So she also talked to me about sex and like how precious and important and to, you know, whatever. So I guess in my.

• 55:05Amy Poehler?

  That's great.

• 55:05Speaker 04

In my work, I, I, it's something that I feel brave with.

• 55:12Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 55:12Speaker 04

And that I feel when it's, when it's used the right way in a story, it's important. So I've always just like done the simulated sex scene. But now with the intimacy coordinator was like, do you want a Pilates ball between you guys for the thrusting movement?

• 55:30Amy Poehler?

Just to get some core workout in.

• 55:31Speaker 04

And I was like, what? But then we're gonna be like so far away from each other.

• 55:36Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 55:37Speaker 04

And I was not, and we didn't end up using that. But a lot of it also is like, there are times when I've done a sex scene where I'm by myself because I'm only in the frame. So I'm just like, like gyrating on my own and moaning.

• 55:53Amy Poehler?

Looking at a tennis ball off camera.

• 55:54Speaker 04

Yeah, exactly. Or like slamming myself into a headboard.

• 56:03Amy Poehler?

And then on the other side of the camera is like just a bunch of crew guys.

• 56:06Speaker 04

Just a bunch of dudes. Yeah, with their heads down.

• 56:09Amy Poehler?

Okay, but I'm gonna ask you a bunch of things very quickly. This is like a speed round and I want you to tell me your thoughts.

• 56:14Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 56:14Amy Poehler?

Tokyo has woken up. Oh wait, Tokyo's coming. Oh, hi. Okay, um, Olivia Colman.

• 56:24Speaker 04

The best human on the planet. On the planet.

• 56:27Amy Poehler?

Yes, that, the film you guys did together was, isn't so good. The Lost Daughter. So great.

• 56:32Speaker 04

  Oh, she's amazing.

• 56:34Amy Poehler?

Just seems smart and funny and cool.

• 56:37Speaker 04

She is the funniest person and so much fun.

• 56:40Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 56:40Speaker 04

  So much fun.

• 56:42Amy Poehler?

Okay, um, and you love reading?

• 56:44Speaker 04

  I love reading.

• 56:45Amy Poehler?

I do too. How, do you have a number of books you try to read a year? Like, do you try to?

• 56:48Speaker 04

My bedside table right now is maybe 27 books. It's ridiculous.

• 56:53Amy Poehler?

  Great.

• 56:54Speaker 04

It, they're just piles and piles of books that I'm trying to get through. A lot of them are like therapy books. And then, stop it. Um, and then.

• 57:07Speaker 04

I'm fired. I don't work for you anymore.

• 57:09Amy Poehler?

Well, I mean, this is exact, I mean, this is what always happens, right? Is like, animals are super cute and then they're animals. They can't help it. I mean, look how cute this dog is.

• 57:23Speaker 04

I think you should get a puppy.

• 57:25Amy Poehler?

Absol, I would rather get a.

• 57:28Speaker 04

  Kick in the face.

• 57:29Amy Poehler?

A case of snakes than a puppy. Um, no, dumb. And then, oh, Tokyo, you are very cute though. You're very cute. I talked to you about Olivia Colman. I have, I have written down here, work-life balance. Right now, I'm just scratching Tokyo.

• 57:51Amy Poehler?

Okay, this dog is winning me over. This, this dog is really nice.

• 57:55Speaker 04

  I know.

• 57:57Amy Poehler?

  She's very nice.

• 57:58Speaker 04

  Go wee-wees.

• 57:59Amy Poehler?

Don't tell her to go wee-wee.

• 58:06Amy Poehler?

  She's very cute.

• 58:11Amy Poehler?

What are you listening to right now, watching, checking out? That's like, when you want to check out and laugh, where do you go? What do you listen to?

• 58:21Speaker 04

Okay, this is a very weird thing that I've been doing.

• 58:23Amy Poehler?

  Okay, great, love it.

• 58:24Speaker 04

  I don't watch reality television.

• 58:26Amy Poehler?

  Same, I barely watch it.

• 58:27Speaker 04

But I have found a show called Farmer Wants a Wife.

• 58:33Speaker 04

  Have you heard of it?

• 58:34Amy Poehler?

  No.

• 58:35Speaker 04

  Oh my god.

• 58:36Amy Poehler?

  Oh my god.

• 58:37Speaker 04

  It's a nightmare.

• 58:38Amy Poehler?

  Please tell me.

• 58:39Speaker 04

  It's a nightmare.

• 58:40Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 58:40Speaker 04

A farmer like scrolls through a list of women and picks eight of them. They all come, there's four farmers.

• 58:47Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 58:48Speaker 04

  Eight women per farmer.

• 58:49Amy Poehler?

  Eight women per farmer?

• 58:51Speaker 04

Yes, then they go on a speed date. Ten minutes per woman.

• 58:57Amy Poehler?

And do they speed date on a farm or in like a studio?

• 58:59Speaker 04

  In like a barn set.

• 59:01Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 59:02Speaker 04

And then they see if they have a connection. And then he has to choose five women to bring back to his farm and date them all for six weeks.

• 59:10Amy Poehler?

  Oh my god.

• 59:11Speaker 04

  It's insane.

• 59:12Amy Poehler?

First of all, I'm just horrified by the amount he gets to pick from. He gets to pick from five?

• 59:18Speaker 04

  It's ridiculous.

• 59:20Amy Poehler?

And is a lot of his choosing about what kind of, like, how is she gonna help me with the farm?

• 59:25Speaker 04

That's the crazy thing, is he makes them do a lot of manual labor.

• 59:29Amy Poehler?

  This is nuts.

• 59:30Speaker 04

And I'm like, what is going on?

• 59:31Amy Poehler?

Well, he wants a wife. Farmer wants a wife.

• 59:34Speaker 04

Farmer wants a wife. And they're like, you know, I really like that she's from the city, but I don't know how she'll do out on the tractor. It's so, I don't know what accent that was. I don't know where that farmer's from.

• 59:48Amy Poehler?

That's your dialect coach. He's coming back, your nine-year-old. Call her up.

• 59:53Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 59:53Amy Poehler?

Whoa, okay, and what do you like about watching it? Do you like because you're outraged by it?

• 59:57Speaker 04

Yes, and I can't stop. I feel really uncomfortable, like deeply uncomfortable. But then I keep going.

• 1:00:04Amy Poehler?

And do you get invested? Like, who is he gonna pick?

• 1:00:06Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:00:07Amy Poehler?

And has there ever been any of that?

• 1:00:08Speaker 04

There's drama between the girls, of course.

• 1:00:10Amy Poehler?

Oh, sure. Yeah. Do they sabotage each other at all?

• 1:00:12Speaker 04

They definitely talk some shit. And they like gang up on each other. And some of them are just, they're just nuts.

• 1:00:19Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:20Speaker 04

And some of them are like, I'm like, oh, they'd be a good match. They really get along.

• 1:00:24Amy Poehler?

Do you ever get a vibe like, wow, they're gonna be together? Like, it's-

• 1:00:28Speaker 04

  Sometimes.

• 1:00:28Amy Poehler?

  Like, it's a good, it's a good match?

• 1:00:30Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:00:30Amy Poehler?

  I do it every day.

• 1:01:07Amy Poehler?

Okay, that was really, that was a great interview. Dakota is so fun and funny, and she did bring a dog. And I just, I, I, I just wanna say, I love animals. I think you should adopt animals from shelters. I had a dog for a long time. So don't let my resistance to having a dog on the podcast lead you astray. And speaking of strays, there's a lot of strays to adopt.

• 1:01:34Amy Poehler?

So please adopt an animal today. But maybe just check with your boss about whether or not you should bring that animal to work. Because, you know, the answer might be no. But, uh, just please, no. I just love animals. And

• 1:01:56Amy Poehler?
