And talking about friendship, Seth is such a good friend, and I talked to him about what friendship means to him.

• 0:45Amy Poehler?

I try to guess his middle name, and we get tears, people. I get him crying more than once, so bingo, it's that kind of episode. But before we get started, we're always trying to ask people who know our guest to tell me questions to ask them. And joining me from the Cayman Islands on his vacation is the great producer of Late Night with Seth Meyers and ex-producer at Saturday Night Live, Mike Shoemaker. Shu, can you hear me?

• 1:54Amy Poehler?

  Shu.

• 1:55Speaker 02

  Hi.

• 1:57Amy Poehler?

  Hi.

• 1:58Speaker 02

  How are you?

• 1:58Amy Poehler?

Oh, my God. Where are we talking to you from?

• 2:02Speaker 02

Grand Cayman, the beaches over there.

• 2:04Amy Poehler?

Now, before we get into Seth, Shu, when I arrived at SNL in 2001, what was your job? What was the, what was your title?

• 2:12Speaker 02

I think I was producer. I had, you know, I was there already 15 years. So I was, you know, I knew what I was doing finally. I had had my 1,000 hours of, so you didn't meet young, fuck up Shoemaker?

• 2:27Amy Poehler?

And how, where did young Shoemaker get started at SNL? How did young Shoemaker get his started?

• 2:33Speaker 02

Script P A. My first job there was in 1986, which is a changeover cast, Dana, Victoria, Jan. And first thing was I came in and the job was to take a yellow legal pad written script out of a bin and type it up so everyone could read it because it's pre-computers. So big old Selectra typewriters. And I was actually hired because I had typing skills and I could type fast and not make mistakes. So the first thing was a church chat. So I had to like read Dana's scrawl with no punctuation. I always read the scripts first. Even one time you were there, I would put the read through order in. So I got to read everything before I performed. So I got better

• 3:17Speaker 02

at understanding everyone's performance style, like the way, like I could never guess how Maya would pronounce a word still this day because she always will change it.

• 3:28Amy Poehler?

I cannot believe that Dana Carvey wrote Church Chat on Yellow Legal Pad.

• 3:33Speaker 02

Literally, you could not find a period or a comma in it. Like, he didn't know how to do them.

• 3:37Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, so.

• 3:38Speaker 02

  It worked.

• 3:38Amy Poehler?

It worked. I mean, so Shoemaker was the guy and is still is the guy. Like, kind of, you're, you know, I, I've said this before publicly, you're the best producer I've ever worked with. I think you're an incredible producer. And now, how long have you been working at Late Night? Since the beginning?

• 3:55Speaker 02

Uh, yeah. So it's 11 years with Seth.

• 3:58Amy Poehler?

  11 years.

• 3:59Speaker 02

I was at SNL until, so Amy and I left the same day, basically.

• 4:04Amy Poehler?

Yeah, Shu and I, we had a, we had a combined goodbye party.

• 4:08Speaker 02

Yes, that is called like my surprise party because Amy set it up and didn't want to call it her. But it was really ours.

• 4:15Amy Poehler?

Now, I'm, I'm talking to Seth today. I'm almost worried that I'm too relaxed. You know what I mean? Because I feel not at all nervous. I've, you know, it is a friendship that's so easy and we can hang so easily that I almost, I feel kinda underprepared. I'm gonna try to poke him a little bit with some things that'll get him a little mad cuz he's, it's a lot of fun when Seth gets mad.

• 4:39Speaker 02

It really is fun. It is kinda the most fun.

• 4:42Amy Poehler?

Well, I, I hope someday you come on as a guest cuz I do wanna continue to talk about.

• 4:48Speaker 02

  Amy, Amy, you have sponsors.

• 4:51Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, that's true.

• 4:52Speaker 02

  Bill Simmons.

• 4:53Amy Poehler?

Bill's never gonna, no, there's no way he's gonna let you on.

• 4:55Speaker 02

Those blue eyes would turn black saying, "When you booking these fucking people?" No one ever heard of, just keep going with it.

• 5:02Amy Poehler?

You're right. I'm sorry I even said that. There's no way you're gonna be a guest. I mean, we literally just had Michelle Obama. Like, we just had Michelle Obama. Like, no offense you, but.

• 5:09Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 5:10Amy Poehler?

Like, don't call us, we'll call you. I mean, it's, we're never gonna get to you.

• 5:15Speaker 02

  Tell Bill that, yeah.

• 5:16Amy Poehler?

Yeah, I'm sorry, Bill, I even mentioned it. But, um, okay, so what do you think I should be, what would you wanna hear me ask Seth today? What do you think we should talk about? Anything big or small?

• 5:27Speaker 02

So, the question that I want you to ask is that, I think the reason that we all became a unit is because you and I saw him first. And by that, I mean, he felt seen by us before everyone else there did. I think that's accurate cuz you had, you were kinda famous and I was a producer there 15 years, but he was like a feature player that you don't necessarily invest in in the first year because you don't know what's gonna happen. But we did. So, we were the first people that he felt seen by. So, my question would be, what does he think we saw? What does he think that we saw in him?

• 6:08Amy Poehler?

What a great question. As early investors to the Seth Meyers Corporation, what does he think we saw in him? He is gonna have, that's a deep question, dude. He, he might have, he might turn into sand, like, and when he has to, he might just turn into a thousand crows and fly away. Like, that just might be like, that might be what breaks him.

• 6:32Speaker 02

Also, you know, he's a talk show host, so like, compliments, like, when people come on and compliment him, he has to end it and turn it around. So, he will, like, say nice things about us and say, like, we were perceptive. Now, you should allow that and don't, don't edit that out, but. But also like put a tweet fire, make him say like, what qualities did he have? Cause I think that will be a nice thing to hear out of him. Cause he doesn't talk nicely about himself.

• 6:58Amy Poehler?

I know. I think, I think Seth is probably least comfortable talking about himself. And I relate, I relate. I would much rather talk about-

• 7:08Speaker 02

No, it's hard to get you to do it too. Say something nice about yourself.

• 7:11Amy Poehler?

  Now?

• 7:12Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 7:13Amy Poehler?

Uh, well, I have a fantastic fake food collection in my podcast studio.

• 7:18Speaker 02

  It looks great.

• 7:19Amy Poehler?

And, you know, I, um, I collected it. That's all I, that's all I can think of. Well, Shu, I love that you're taking a vacation. You work too hard. Congratulations on 11 years. We got to celebrate the 10 years together, which was great. I mean, I hope you do 10 more. You think you'll do 10 more?

• 7:37Speaker 02

  I don't know.

• 7:38Amy Poehler?

  I don't know. What's TV? What's the world?

• 7:40Speaker 02

  I don't know. I don't know. It'll be like this maybe.

• 7:44Amy Poehler?

Is this TV? Where I talk to you in a, over, over there and then, but you listen to?

• 7:51Speaker 02

Right. That's how it works. That's TV.

• 7:53Amy Poehler?

All right. I love you. Thank you so much. And thank you Catherine and Mike for setting Mike up on this and doing this.

• 7:59Speaker 02

  They're ready on the beach.

• 7:59Amy Poehler?

Okay, great. Okay, go to the beach. Thank you so much for, I love you so much. I'll see you very soon. Okay. Bye.

• 8:05Speaker 02

  All right, bye.

• 8:56Amy Poehler?

This episode is brought to you by Boar's Head. There's turkey and then there's the Friar's Deep Fried Turkey Breast. New from Boar's Head. Deliciously golden fried on the outside, perfectly seasoned all the way through, bursting with savory flavor, juicy. Okay, I need to stop, my mouth is watering. This isn't just any turkey, it's a taste that'll take you back. A taste born from a backyard tradition. I'm talking fold-out chairs on the lawn, neighbors catching a whiff and popping their heads over the fence, kids being told to stand back, that feeling of the first slice being carved. And now you don't need a backyard fryer. You can get that same golden juicy seasoned to perfection taste at the deli with the

• 9:53Amy Poehler?

For those listening, Seth's already giving us a time where he needs to be out. He needs to be out by 12:10.

• 9:59Speaker 03

I don't feel like you respect other people's schedules.

• 10:02Amy Poehler?

I mean, I feel like, before we've even started, Seth told me, how long, asked, how long is this gonna go? Oh, glasses, well. Same kind of-

• 10:13Speaker 03

  Pretty similar.

• 10:15Amy Poehler?

Whoa, that's weird, you got tortoise?

• 10:16Speaker 03

  I got tortoise, of course.

• 10:18Amy Poehler?

I am gonna wipe my glasses on my pants. When did you start wearing glasses?

• 10:22Speaker 03

Within like the last six months.

• 10:24Amy Poehler?

Really? You waited, you were without, you waited out that long?

• 10:27Speaker 03

  I did a great job.

• 10:29Speaker 03

I think it's easier to do crack cocaine ones than wear reading glasses ones. You know what I mean? The minute you put them on, forever. I wore, I put them on for like two seconds.

• 10:37Amy Poehler?

  What's your prescription?

• 10:39Speaker 03

Just a 1-5. What are you?

• 10:41Amy Poehler?

  Try a 2. And you're, you're-

• 10:43Speaker 03

  I don't, no, I don't wanna try a 2.

• 10:45Amy Poehler?

What, cuz it's gonna never go back? But just try it. See how much better everything looks with a 2.

• 10:51Speaker 03

  I mean, it's really good.

• 10:52Amy Poehler?

Yeah. Let me try your 1s. I'm not even gonna feel those 1s.

• 10:55Speaker 03

Drat! See? Immediately, it immediately messed it up.

• 10:59Amy Poehler?

  I wish.

• 11:02Amy Poehler?

This is actually not so bad. I can see this pretty well.

• 11:05Speaker 03

  So do it. Go back.

• 11:05Amy Poehler?

Yeah, maybe I should go back.

• 11:06Speaker 03

What do you listen to? What do you listen to your podcasts on? Now that you're a podcaster, do you feel like that's an unfair question?

• 11:12Amy Poehler?

Thanks for calling me that. And you really are a podcaster.

• 11:16Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 11:16Amy Poehler?

  You do too.

• 11:17Speaker 03

  Mm-hmm.

• 11:18Amy Poehler?

What do I listen to my podcasts on?

• 11:19Speaker 03

Yeah, just, I once said to a podcaster.

• 11:23Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 11:24Speaker 03

That I listened to them at 1.5 and they were hurt.

• 11:29Amy Poehler?

Oh, you mean fast? I never speed up.

• 11:32Speaker 03

What? You listen to podcasts slower? You slow it down?

• 11:36Amy Poehler?

I slow it. No, I listen regular. I never speed up.

• 11:39Speaker 03

  Oh, interesting.

• 11:40Amy Poehler?

Sometimes I'll do the 10-second skip, like if, if like a podcast gets like gross or something, or if I know, you know, like.

• 11:48Speaker 03

  What are you listening to?

• 11:51Speaker 03

  What?

• 11:51Amy Poehler?

  Hey, this is my interview.

• 11:52Speaker 03

What podcast gets gross for 10 seconds?

• 11:54Amy Poehler?

This is my interview. We are with Seth Meyers and he's already asking me questions. And Seth, I'm realizing you're, we're sitting the way we used to sit at Update.

• 12:04Speaker 03

It is. It's our update position.

• 12:05Amy Poehler?

And you also, we're sitting the way you usually sit on your show.

• 12:09Speaker 03

I'm very grateful that it's this.

• 12:13Amy Poehler?

You, well, your people insisted on it.

• 12:15Speaker 03

  Did they?

• 12:16Amy Poehler?

  No, no, no.

• 12:16Speaker 03

Good. But I, I feel very strongly about having a good side.

• 12:21Amy Poehler?

Okay. Thank you for saying that. A few people that have noticed that I've switched to another side. I started the first couple of podcasts on that side.

• 12:30Speaker 03

That's what, that's why I thought you maybe did this for me.

• 12:32Amy Poehler?

And I, I did it for me because I feel like I have a good side and it's this side and you like that side?

• 12:38Speaker 03

I like this side. And if anybody wants to see our bad side, they can look at the Entertainment Weekly cover we did, which is the worst photograph of either of us.

• 12:47Amy Poehler?

Yeah, it was shot with a fisheye lens, I think.

• 12:50Speaker 03

  They did us dirty.

• 12:50Amy Poehler?

And I was pulling your tie, like. And it was like, and it was like, would you like to see two asymmetrical faces look even weirder with this lens?

• 12:59Speaker 03

And I was so excited. That was a time of my life. I was so excited. We were on the cover of Entertainment Weekly.

• 13:05Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 13:05Speaker 03

And then I saw it and I felt unexcited.

• 13:08Amy Poehler?

I don't think there's been many photo shoots in my life where I've seen it and thought nailed it. I don't think I've, I could maybe count them on my hand.

• 13:17Speaker 03

I feel very strongly, the thing we have in common is we have great faces that as long as they're moving.

• 13:20Amy Poehler?

  Gotta keep moving.

• 13:21Speaker 03

  Gotta keep moving.

• 13:22Amy Poehler?

  But once they stop.

• 13:23Speaker 03

There's no good freeze frame as a whole.

• 13:26Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, no.

• 13:27Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 13:28Amy Poehler?

In fact, I used, when we used to do photo shoots and I'd say like, don't worry, we're gonna just do like a light retouch. I would say, light retouch, eyes and a mouth. That's all I wanna see.

• 13:39Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 13:40Amy Poehler?

I don't want, I want the heaviest retouching you could ever do.

• 13:44Speaker 03

Yeah. Don't feel like you're doing me a courtesy of being like, we barely touched it. I'm like, go nuts. Get your best touch guy in here.

• 13:51Amy Poehler?

Get your wand and the, like, I know there's a, there's a thing now of like being natural, like don't retouch, but I'm against that.

• 14:00Speaker 03

A hundred percent. If you wanna see the real thing, come see the real thing. But otherwise you're getting the retouch version.

• 14:05Amy Poehler?

If you're asking me to stay still, then we need to paint over, change my nose and everything. No, but I feel like we've done a lot of photo shoots together over the years and I bet you get what I get, what a lot of people get, which is they really want you to be funny.

• 14:20Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 14:21Amy Poehler?

And they want you to do funny things.

• 14:22Speaker 03

Yeah. I had a heartbreaking GQ photo shoot where first I walked in and the photographer

• 14:29Amy Poehler?

  Uh oh.

• 14:29Speaker 03

Didn't know who I was. For the GQ comedy issue. So that was, that put me in a headspace where I was maybe felt as though a mistake had been made.

• 14:37Amy Poehler?

  Yikes.

• 14:38Speaker 03

And then I remember they had wanted, I think it was whipped, like whipped cream from the like, and they wanted to spray it all over my face. And the amount I had to say like, you know, this'll just look like.

• 14:52Amy Poehler?

  Bad.

• 14:52Speaker 03

Yeah. You know what this also looks like on a, on a face. And they were like.

• 14:57Amy Poehler?

Oh, it's funny. They used to wanna put a lot of weird stuff on my face too. One time a guy was like, I have an idea where your hands are covered in barbecue sauce and you have barbecue sauce all over your face. And I was like, okay.

• 15:10Speaker 03

It is, by the way, like, people who get talked into, like, young in their life, like, maybe a pornographic photo shoot.

• 15:20Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, very easy.

• 15:21Speaker 03

Could happen to me in a heartbeat. If anybody had ever shown a monocom an interest in that.

• 15:26Amy Poehler?

  Yes, absolutely.

• 15:26Speaker 03

  I would have been 100%.

• 15:28Amy Poehler?

And I think the same thing happened to you that happened to you, where you'd go to a photo shoot, and it was like, you'd turn the corner, and there'd be a table of rubber chickens.

• 15:36Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah.

• 15:36Amy Poehler?

And clown noses, and giant props, and you'd just be like, oh, God, I'm such, I'm, I'm, I'm.

• 15:43Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 15:44Amy Poehler?

  I'm being pimped out.

• 15:46Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 15:46Amy Poehler?

  Yeah?

• 15:47Speaker 03

And I feel as though they should save those for the dramatic actors, and just let us look nice for once.

• 15:52Amy Poehler?

  I completely agree.

• 15:53Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 15:53Amy Poehler?

Okay, Seth Meyers, Seth, Kevin Meyers, what's your name? What's your name? Oh, let me get it. I don't know it.

• 16:01Speaker 03

  You don't have to.

• 16:02Amy Poehler?

Seth, hold on, let me get it. Seth.

• 16:06Speaker 03

  Do you want, how many?

• 16:06Amy Poehler?

  Zachary Meyers.

• 16:07Speaker 03

How many hints do you want?

• 16:10Amy Poehler?

I'm gonna get it. Seth Michael Meyers.

• 16:11Speaker 03

You want, you're gonna get it without hints? How long do you think it's gonna take?

• 16:16Amy Poehler?

I know your family, I know your family. Seth David Meyers?

• 16:19Speaker 03

  No.

• 16:20Amy Poehler?

  Oh. Seth.

• 16:21Speaker 03

  Again, there's hints.

• 16:23Amy Poehler?

All right, give me a hint.

• 16:24Speaker 03

  It's an A name.

• 16:26Amy Poehler?

  Oh. Seth Alexander Meyers?

• 16:28Speaker 03

  Mm-mm.

• 16:29Amy Poehler?

  Seth Andrew Meyers?

• 16:30Speaker 03

No. I was so worried, because I know these are only an hour, and I thought, oh, you think it's gonna go by so fast. And now I'm so happy we're using the time.

• 16:38Amy Poehler?

  Seth Al- Albert?

• 16:41Speaker 03

  Nope.

• 16:41Amy Poehler?

Oh, that's your dog. That's your family dog's name.

• 16:43Speaker 03

By the way, my dad, you know, for those not in the know, we've had six old English sheepdogs, they've all been named Albert. And then, when we started giving all our kids A names.

• 16:51Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 16:52Speaker 03

My dad was very, he admitted he was hopeful we were gonna also name a kid Albert. And I said, no, I think you took it away.

• 16:59Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, you can't.

• 16:59Speaker 03

If all the dogs hadn't been named Albert, there was a chance, but like, we weren't gonna name our kid after a living dog.

• 17:07Amy Poehler?

  Okay, one last guess.

• 17:14Amy Poehler?

Don't cut this out. Don't cut the airtime.

• 17:15Speaker 03

No, this is good. People would like this.

• 17:17Amy Poehler?

  This is good for...

• 17:18Speaker 03

Especially because I think people were tuning in and being like, "You know what? I can't wait because they know each other so well. They've been friends for so long." And then what they get to do is listen to you just without hints, try to guess my middle name.

• 17:30Amy Poehler?

My last guess is Seth America Myers.

• 17:34Speaker 03

That is what I do like to... That's what I answer to. That's my full email. Uh, Adam.

• 17:40Amy Poehler?

Adam. Sure. That makes sense. Okay, Seth Adam Myers, when did we first meet?

• 17:48Speaker 03

Well, I remember the first time we met probably better than you remember the first time we met, which is I was at IO Improv Olympic.

• 17:57Amy Poehler?

  Improv Olympic, yeah.

• 17:58Speaker 03

And there was a Herald Show.

• 18:02Amy Poehler?

  Which is an improv show?

• 18:04Speaker 03

And there used to be two different teams and in the middle there would be the dream.

• 18:08Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 18:08Speaker 03

Which was an improvised game where somebody from the audience would come up, somebody on stage would interview them about their day, and then the two improv teams would improvise what their dream would look like. And I came up on stage and you interviewed me.

• 18:21Amy Poehler?

And it was not during a show with me and Tina? It was...

• 18:24Speaker 03

I also saw the show with you and Tina later.

• 18:26Amy Poehler?

Okay, right, but we didn't call you up. Right, so I interviewed you about your day and we did not know each other.

• 18:32Speaker 03

We did not know each other. I was a fan of yours and it was very exciting to get interviewed by you. But then the next time, the next time we spoke was after we both got hired.

• 18:40Amy Poehler?

Do you believe in the simulation? Do you believe that like there's some kind of universal thing where like, basically that people come in and out of your life in different ways and you don't really...

• 18:50Speaker 03

I do a little bit, yeah.

• 18:51Amy Poehler?

Me too, because that's a very simulation thing.

• 18:53Speaker 03

Can I tell you though something? Yesterday, I got the same Uber driver on back-to-back days. In Giant City, Los Angeles. And I got in the car and I was like, "Can you believe this?" And it meant nothing to him. And I was so, I was so disappointing. Yeah.

• 19:11Amy Poehler?

  Did you, what's his name?

• 19:13Speaker 03

  Well, that was the thing.

• 19:13Amy Poehler?

Oh, you didn't even find out.

• 19:14Speaker 03

No, I know. That's why I remembered. His name was Mush.

• 19:17Amy Poehler?

  Mush?

• 19:18Speaker 03

  M U S H. So I don't make me saying it wrong, but like.

• 19:21Amy Poehler?

  Wow.

• 19:21Speaker 03

So that's one of the reasons. I was like, you can't, there can't be two.

• 19:24Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 19:24Speaker 03

And I was like, hey, Mush.

• 19:26Amy Poehler?

I'm back. You said, I'm back.

• 19:27Speaker 03

Yeah. It did feel like a Curb episode. Where I was a very frustrated Larry Davids, like Mush.

• 19:34Amy Poehler?

Hey, remember me? And he's like, no, I'm just trying to get you to the Grove.

• 19:38Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 19:38Amy Poehler?

Okay, so we, and then the dream happened. We improvised your day.

• 19:43Speaker 03

  Yep.

• 19:44Amy Poehler?

Cut to you and I starting at the same time at SNL. People, people may not know this, but we were both there post nine 11. And our first show was two weeks after it. And there was like a very interesting, we were part of a freshman class. It was four people got hired.

• 20:01Speaker 03

  Yep.

• 20:02Amy Poehler?

  It was, who was it?

• 20:04Speaker 03

  Dean Edwards.

• 20:04Amy Poehler?

  Yep.

• 20:05Speaker 03

  Jeff Richards.

• 20:06Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 20:06Speaker 03

  You and I.

• 20:07Amy Poehler?

  Yeah. And then for writers.

• 20:09Speaker 03

  Spivey.

• 20:10Amy Poehler?

  Emily Spivey.

• 20:10Speaker 03

  Max Brooks.

• 20:11Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 20:13Speaker 03

  Charlie Grandy?

• 20:14Amy Poehler?

Maybe Charlie Grandy. Yeah. And we all kind of came in together and we kind of met in Shoemaker's office as a lot of young, young, new people did to like, kind of get the lay of the land. But I think we might've like met each, I don't.

• 20:28Speaker 03

Yes. I'm going to say something and hopefully I won't get too emotional saying it, but I remember like getting hired at SNL was already.

• 20:36Amy Poehler?

Cry, cry. Oh, my God, Seth's.

• 20:37Speaker 03

I'm going to put on my glasses. This will make it easy. No, but like, I remember getting hired at SNL was like already like, but they said, and Amy Poehler also got hired. And I was like, oh, I felt even elevated. That I was like, oh, I'm in Amy Poehler's class. You know what I mean?

• 20:52Amy Poehler?

For those that can't see, Seth has tears in his eyes.

• 20:54Speaker 03

  I don't think I do.

• 20:55Amy Poehler?

You do. You almost cried. You're such a crier.

• 20:58Speaker 03

  Oh, I'm such a crier.

• 20:59Amy Poehler?

  You love to cry.

• 21:00Speaker 03

  I love to cry.

• 21:01Amy Poehler?

I'm going to make you cry.

• 21:02Speaker 03

I, I, I also only cry historically about stuff that makes me happy.

• 21:09Amy Poehler?

Oh, say, say more. What do you mean?

• 21:11Speaker 03

  Well, like, I don't think I cry a lot when I'm sad.

• 21:13Amy Poehler?

  When you're sad, yeah.

• 21:14Speaker 03

Well, like, I know a lot of people who are like.

• 21:15Amy Poehler?

God forbid you express how you feel when you're sad.

• 21:18Speaker 03

No, when I'm sad, I think it's like.

• 21:20Amy Poehler?

  Turn into a rock.

• 21:21Speaker 03

Yeah, a little rock, little rock guy. Little rock guy that everybody loves, loves the company of Rock Man.

• 21:27Amy Poehler?

Okay, so we started SNL the same time.

• 21:29Speaker 03

  Yep.

• 21:29Amy Poehler?

And speaking of that time, um, you know, I, okay, I love your podcast. I've told you this, I've been on them, I've participated in them. You do family trips with the great Josh Myers, your brother and partner on that podcast. And you do, what's it called? The Seth Meyers.

• 21:48Speaker 03

The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers podcast. It was only fair to put them first as we're really only talking about their work.

• 21:54Amy Poehler?

Well, but, and that podcast is incredible.

• 21:56Speaker 03

  It's a, it's a joy.

• 21:57Amy Poehler?

It's so good, I want to talk to you about it. But that, but on both of them, you have like, as I've listened, you slowly, um, like, I've learned something about you that I don't think I really took in, which was those early years were harder for you than I thought.

• 22:14Speaker 03

  They were so hard.

• 22:16Amy Poehler?

  I know.

• 22:16Speaker 03

It's so. But I would have guessed the two people who knew the most would have been you and Shoemaker. So I am, but I will say, I am happy that I kept it hidden the way that I did. Cause I don't, I don't think like, um, when you present the feelings that I was having at SNL, I think that that is not a vibe that people want to like be around.

• 22:42Amy Poehler?

Right. And it, and it is, it can become like a little bit of a self fulfilling prophecy.

• 22:46Speaker 03

  So I did.

• 22:47Amy Poehler?

But what was the vibe then? If you were to distill it down, what was the feeling then?

• 22:51Speaker 03

I just felt as though they'd made a terrible mistake, right? Like just full imposter syndrome. And I showed up and pretty quickly, I think, you know, to go back to what I said, like, I'm so excited, you know, oh my God, I'm, they're hiring me the same time as Amy Poehler. And then you walk down the hallway and you're like, oh my God, I'm in the same show as Will Ferrell and, and Chris Catan and Tracy Morgan. And you're like, look, I'm one of them. And then you realize like, no, like you then have to like do the work and show that you're, you know, at the same level. And those early years as well, I just had. That sense of I can write for this show, but like, I don't know if they actually like need what I bring as a performer to the show. And I don't feel like I was being hard on myself either.

• 23:33Amy Poehler?

There was a, there were a lot of guys in your time, like a lot of.

• 23:37Speaker 03

Well, in the early days, it was, it felt as though I could see the road ahead of me because I forgot that thing, which is when people like Will Ferrell and Jimmy Fallon leave Catan, that doesn't mean like you get their parts because they also hire people behind you. And that was for me, the real crisis of confidence was, and again, you know, I say this, these dear friends, these are

• 24:01Amy Poehler?

  Of course.

• 24:01Speaker 03

people I'm huge fans of, but like when like Sudeikis and Sandberg and Fred and Will and Hater rolled through.

• 24:06Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 24:07Speaker 03

And I would be writing sketches, knowing that if I was not a cast member, I would not write for me. Like if it wasn't my job to take care of myself and I just wanted my sketch to air, I would be my sixth choice too. So I, you know, early on, I kind of wanted to like blame the writing staff for not putting me in things. And I'm like, oh, I mean, you, if you have this toolbox at your disposal, I understand that.

• 24:29Amy Poehler?

Well, I think that's what's so wonderful about you. And also what can be painful is you're not, you're not a really, you're not a deluded person.

• 24:35Speaker 03

  No.

• 24:35Amy Poehler?

You do not, you don't have the like warm bath of delusion.

• 24:39Speaker 03

  Right.

• 24:39Amy Poehler?

That some people are like, ah, you are a very realistic person. So you're able to look at things very realistically and be like, I have to figure this out.

• 24:47Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 24:47Amy Poehler?

And I did feel that vibe. Okay. So we do this thing on our show where we ask people beforehand to give me questions for the guest. So I talked to Shoemaker.

• 24:57Speaker 03

  Okay. Good trick, good pick.

• 24:59Amy Poehler?

Yeah, of course. I knew I would like, he is technically your.

• 25:02Speaker 03

It would have been so funny.

• 25:03Amy Poehler?

  Life partner.

• 25:04Speaker 03

It was like, I'm a little tired of talking about Seth.

• 25:07Amy Poehler?

He's in the Cayman Islands right now. So we got him and he was on vacation and.

• 25:11Speaker 03

I, by the way, called him on the way here.

• 25:13Amy Poehler?

He just texted me and said, I'm ghosting Seth. So tell me when you're done.

• 25:18Speaker 03

  He did fully ghosted me.

• 25:19Amy Poehler?

Yeah. He said, I'm not picking up.

• 25:20Speaker 03

And then I was like, oh, well, he's, and then when you said you were talking to him, like, obviously you called him before he was in the Cayman Islands, but no.

• 25:25Amy Poehler?

  No.

• 25:26Speaker 03

  He just picked up.

• 25:26Amy Poehler?

Purely ghosted you. I mean, and you two are like in another life. You are brothers in arms. You are each other, you know, like if you believe in.

• 25:36Speaker 03

I mean, I'm pretty good with what we are in this life. I think it's, I mean, he is as close as I. Could be to a person.

• 25:44Amy Poehler?

Yeah, you have an amazing friendship. And he has, he gave me a question to ask you that I love so much. It's the best question, of course, because Schumacher is such a good producer and, and writer and friend. But he gave me, I think, the best question I've been given yet. Now, I've only done like six episodes, so. But, um, but.

• 26:03Speaker 03

Did while he was on with you, did the doorbell ring? And did a thousand dogs bark?

• 26:11Amy Poehler?

Thank you again for doing that, by the way. I owe all of you a lot. I mean, I owe Dratch like half of this, the money.

• 26:18Speaker 03

I feel like it's the movie I've been in that I get the most feedback on.

• 26:23Speaker 03

I think that like, that's 60 seconds. The amount in the last month, people are like, oh, my God, I can't stop watching the clip.

• 26:29Amy Poehler?

  I can't either. I.

• 26:30Speaker 03

Where Dratch's headphones tangle and then the doorbell rings. It's like watching a one person show.

• 26:37Amy Poehler?

It is. It is like watching a, like a Broadway, like a, a clown on stage, like a farce.

• 26:44Speaker 03

It's like somebody said, do noises off in a minute. Just you.

• 26:48Amy Poehler?

And people don't know, we cut so much out of that because Dratch couldn't get her headphones truly untangled for minutes.

• 26:55Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 26:55Amy Poehler?

And then couldn't figure out how to plug it in, and then they weren't working, and then the doorbell rang. So we cut a lot out.

• 27:00Speaker 03

Yeah. And then her laptop died. She was carrying around like a pizza box around her whole apartment.

• 27:05Amy Poehler?

And thank God for you because you were the only one that was trying to keep it going. Cause Fred, Fred's just watching.

• 27:11Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah.

• 27:12Amy Poehler?

Zarna was, it was on set, I think, so she could barely hear. And you were like, so how's it going, Amy? I was like, it's going good. I think it's going good so far. Oh, Dratch. Um, okay. But Schumacher, nice try trying to fake me out so that I don't ask you this question. But, um, uh, Schu said, let me ask you this, which is,

• 27:34Amy Poehler?

I would agree that in those early years, him and I saw something in you. We kind of invested early in the Seth Meyers corporation. What, oh my God, I'm getting him to cry. Oh, my God, you guys, I wish we could zoom in.

• 27:55Amy Poehler?

This is my dream come true. Getting you to cry. Okay. There's so many, this is a specific kink that people are, this is, you know, people are gonna, this is like a kink.

• 28:09Amy Poehler?

Wait, we have tissues. We have tissues. Where are they? Sam, oh my God, thank you, Sam.

• 28:21Amy Poehler?

  You have good acting.

• 28:22Speaker 03

You have good acting. Oh, my God, this is what the show's always... If you have this, this is what... This is a trap.

• 28:28Amy Poehler?

I just want to remind you, we only have a few minutes left for their session.

• 28:31Speaker 03

Listen to everyone else. All it is with Jack Black is like, "You're joy." Talking to Ike about restaurants.

• 28:42Speaker 03

What is going on? Is everything... Is this not even a podcast? This is like just six fake episode traps?

• 28:48Amy Poehler?

If you look past the camera, there's a bunch of friends and family that love you and want to talk to you about something.

• 28:53Speaker 03

  Oh, my God!

• 28:53Amy Poehler?

We just think you need to get some help and we're just using this opportunity. Okay.

• 28:58Speaker 03

  What's the help?

• 29:00Amy Poehler?

Here, and if you need to squeeze his cheeseburger, you can.

• 29:06Speaker 03

This will help. What is it?

• 29:08Amy Poehler?

What do you mean, what is? You know, this is all fake food.

• 29:13Speaker 03

What is this podcast? I've listened to every episode. I had a real sense of it. I'm like, it's food-based.

• 29:19Amy Poehler?

Okay, okay. If you get nervous, just talk into these bananas.

• 29:27Amy Poehler?

But what do you think Shoemaker and I... What do you think we saw in you?

• 29:32Speaker 03

I... This is very unfair. I feel again, this is very unfair. Um, I don't.

• 29:40Speaker 03

I don't know. I mean, like, to be honest, like, one of the things that I feel most grateful for is, I don't know. I didn't see it.

• 29:48Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 29:50Speaker 03

So, um, I know to this day, like, I don't make it on that show without you guys. And I think that, uh,

• 29:58Speaker 03

I was very lucky that Lorne saw me through your eyes and Shoemaker's eyes. Because I don't know if... You know what, again, like, I don't feel like, um, I feel like Lorne has been, uh, is, is obviously a fan of mine now and has a lot of faith in me, but like, that...

• 30:13Amy Poehler?

He thinks you're okay. He thinks you're fine.

• 30:15Speaker 03

Is this from where? Is this a quote?

• 30:17Amy Poehler?

He sent me a... I said, "I'm interviewing Seth today," and he went, "Oh, Seth's fine." "He's okay." That's what he said.

• 30:25Speaker 03

Did you? Lauren gave a quote in the New York Times about me.

• 30:30Amy Poehler?

Yeah, please say it again. It's so good.

• 30:32Speaker 03

Genuinely, like, two quotes that are insanely, it's all I heard from everybody in our world, was how fucking funny the Lauren quotes were. One was, "I love Seth," or "I care for him," or whatever it is you're allowed to say these days.

• 30:48Speaker 03

Which is, it's the funniest, I'm like, I think you misunderstand, whatever you think woke is, you're allowed to say you love a male friend.

• 30:58Speaker 03

Like, he's like, "I love him," like, backtrack, like, he's like, "I want to get canceled."

• 31:03Amy Poehler?

I don't want to get caught loving, loving my friend.

• 31:07Speaker 03

And then the reporter was like, "Seth's really good," I think Seth's a really gifted impressionist, and he's like, "I don't know if I'd go that far."

• 31:15Speaker 03

And I believe he said, "I think he's fine." Which is the best.

• 31:18Amy Poehler?

  The best.

• 31:19Speaker 03

Gifted was a little over the top.

• 31:21Amy Poehler?

Yeah. So, when we did Update together, which was so fun, in so, in a million different ways, and there was like, when I think about us being at the desks together, I think of two things. One, I had ease because I had gotten to do it with Tina. Like, I just genuinely felt a little more relaxed. I was so trying to figure out how to do this thing when I was doing it with Tina, who had done it with Jim. Like, it was like this passing. But what we also got to do together in real time was, like, figure out how we were gonna do it together.

• 31:55Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 31:55Amy Poehler?

And the way in which we were gonna do it, and because you and Shoemaker and, and, you know, previously, like, Mike Schur and Alex Baze, you know, like, the team was so strong of Update writers and people, it just felt like you were in a club within a club. You were on SNL, but then you also got another secret key.

• 32:18Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 32:19Amy Poehler?

And I know we talked about it, being on Update, you could relax that you were actually gonna be on the show.

• 32:24Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 32:24Amy Poehler?

  That made such a difference.

• 32:26Speaker 03

We talked about this recently, I think in the Lonely Island pod, but I remember Andy wrote this sketch called "That'll Move the Chains," where he was a kid and, like, in the booth of a football game, and he kept saying, "That'll move the chains," and it worked, it was fine. Uh, it was very funny. I'm underselling it, but then he came in my office like a month later. He goes, I think we're gonna write another that'll move the chains. And I said, another? Cause it just struck me, it didn't strike me as a recurring character.

• 32:52Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 32:53Speaker 03

And I just said another and he goes, not everybody has update every week. I was like, alright. Like when you, cause again, I got to go from that thing of like desperately fighting to find a way to have a reason to get in hair and makeup on Saturday to having updates.

• 33:05Amy Poehler?

Yes. And then also you got to say your name.

• 33:08Speaker 03

Got to say my name. Obviously not my middle name.

• 33:10Amy Poehler?

Nope. Never saw you, never said your middle name.

• 33:13Speaker 03

Can I, I feel like the most tense our uh, uh, chemistry ever had was uh, mornings, update mornings, bagel times.

• 33:25Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 33:26Speaker 03

Cause someone had pre-split the jokes and then there were a few like leftover that we both wanted. And I feel like there was a real dance of.

• 33:34Amy Poehler?

Interesting. I would say that I thought I would have hidden that, but that's probably true. I think we were like, are you gonna take that joke?

• 33:41Speaker 03

  Yeah, it's like hmm.

• 33:42Amy Poehler?

Hmm, I wonder who takes the good joke here.

• 33:44Speaker 03

Yeah. My, here's how I saw it from you. It's like, hmm, that feels like an Amy joke.

• 33:53Speaker 03

  Do you want it?

• 33:53Amy Poehler?

  Do you wanna?

• 33:54Speaker 03

And I'd be, and I'd be like, I mean, I would love it. It would mean a lot to me as a friend. I'm asking for it. You're like, it's a real Amy joke.

• 33:59Amy Poehler?

I just feel like it's gonna kind of flop. And then I would go, I hex this joke. I would hex it.

• 34:03Speaker 03

  Yeah, you would hex it.

• 34:04Amy Poehler?

Curse you and I curse this joke.

• 34:05Speaker 03

And then when I, when, if I, the few times you let me have it, you would be off camera while I was telling it going.

• 34:13Amy Poehler?

Thumbs down. Um, I don't remember us ever.

• 34:17Speaker 03

  No.

• 34:17Amy Poehler?

  Fighting at all.

• 34:18Speaker 03

That was it. It was just that like where.

• 34:20Amy Poehler?

We did, we did argue. I would say that one of the things, like, I don't think we ever got into it. We never were, but we like to, I mean, look, really came out of that, right?

• 34:30Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 34:30Amy Poehler?

Like this, we like to be frustrated and irritated and I don't mind being frustrated and irritated with people that I'm close to. That is like a way of.

• 34:38Speaker 03

My favorite thing is when you and I feel very differently about a movie or a TV show.

• 34:44Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 34:44Speaker 03

Like that, when we have different opinions about something, cause it's very fun when you're mad about something.

• 34:50Amy Poehler?

Okay. So with that in mind, I'm gonna give you a couple of things. I wanna know your opinion on it.

• 34:54Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 34:56Amy Poehler?

  The beach.

• 34:57Speaker 03

Oh, I'm not a huge fan. I'm coming around on the beach just because my kids like it. But given a choice, it would be one of the last places I would be.

• 35:07Amy Poehler?

What do you, what do you not like about it?

• 35:09Speaker 03

What are you gonna do there that wouldn't be better anywhere else? Like.

• 35:12Amy Poehler?

  See the ocean?

• 35:14Speaker 03

See the ocean, but like, you can see the ocean from, uh, like a porch somewhere, right? Like, there's, there's a lot of vantage points in the ocean that are not in sand.

• 35:23Amy Poehler?

You don't like the sands? Like, you have a sensory thing?

• 35:26Speaker 03

I, it's just, here's the thing. I, everybody that wants to go to the beach, then I go to the beach. And then they're like, get the sand off, like, the amount they're like, don't get sand in the car. I'm like, I didn't even want to come here. You know what I mean? Like, I was so happy. You could have left me where I was. The sand would never have been a problem.

• 35:42Amy Poehler?

Mm-hmm. So, no, I love the beach. And that's where we disagree. Ayahuasca.

• 35:48Speaker 03

  No interest.

• 35:49Amy Poehler?

  No.

• 35:49Speaker 03

  Yeah. Have you?

• 35:50Amy Poehler?

  No.

• 35:51Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 35:51Amy Poehler?

That one feels like the combo of, I always feel like there's a white bucket around that people are puking in. And I'm always like, first of all, let's, I don't know, decorate the buckets or something like, it just feels so stressful.

• 36:03Speaker 03

  Decorate the buckets.

• 36:04Amy Poehler?

Like, it just seems like very stressful.

• 36:06Speaker 03

Say that I think you might be the only person to have this bounce on ayahuasca is that they don't decorate the buckets?

• 36:11Amy Poehler?

The puke buckets? And also, other people.

• 36:16Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 36:17Amy Poehler?

I mean, I guess maybe, but like, maybe if I could do it, if I had like a ayahuasca guy, like a private guy. But it seems like you have to do it with a bunch of other people.

• 36:26Speaker 03

There's also, I feel like I've known a few people who've done it and they tell you it's changed their life. And then you like, talk to them three months later and they seem a lot like they were before.

• 36:35Amy Poehler?

  They bounce right back.

• 36:37Speaker 03

They bounce right back to, it turns out, once the ayahuasca is out of their system.

• 36:41Amy Poehler?

How do you feel about getting older?

• 36:42Speaker 03

Um, that's a good question. I turned 50 last year.

• 36:47Amy Poehler?

  Congrats.

• 36:48Speaker 03

And, thank you. I turned 51 this year, so I'm.

• 36:51Amy Poehler?

I feel like you didn't celebrate prop, I, I, like.

• 36:54Speaker 03

Look, I'm in that dead, no bars, cell service, December 28th. There's no room for somebody like me to have a birthday. And I'm fine with it. It's been my whole life.

• 37:05Amy Poehler?

Why don't you have a birthday, like, like a half birthday when you're 51 or something? I know, that's even as I said it, it sounds so stupid. We all got that in, we'd be like, is stuff okay?

• 37:15Speaker 03

He lost his mind. Um, I felt totally fine turning 50, but then I think part of it was because it was 50, I was like taking stock. And I'm like, this is, you know what? I would be very happy if I knew all these things were gonna happen to me by the time it's 50. This is really good. With that said, like, I think the, as it's like 51 and a half or whatever it is now, I'm like, oh yeah, no, I don't dig this as much. Here's the thing that happened to me the other day.

• 37:42Amy Poehler?

  Stop pointing.

• 37:45Amy Poehler?

Seth's pointing at me. Don't point my French bread at me.

• 37:49Speaker 03

Um, had a dream that I was being chased and had to, I was crawling through one of those transom windows over a door, you know? And then I woke up, my neck hurt and I was like, I, that's, I've officially, I hurt myself from a dream. Because I was trying to crawl through it.

• 38:05Amy Poehler?

You pulled your neck in a dream.

• 38:06Speaker 03

I pulled my, and like, what happened? It's like, well, in my dream.

• 38:09Amy Poehler?

What kind of sleeper are you? Do you like, do you fall asleep fast?

• 38:13Speaker 03

  I do.

• 38:14Amy Poehler?

And then do you sleep through the night and do you snore?

• 38:17Speaker 03

I, uh, we've, uh, we're now wearing mouth tape.

• 38:21Amy Poehler?

Okay, I want to talk about mouth tape. I talked about CPAP with, um, Jack.

• 38:25Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 38:26Amy Poehler?

Black, um, I would like to switch to mouth tape, sorry to, I don't want to abandon my CPAP people.

• 38:31Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 38:32Amy Poehler?

My CPAP army, um, I'm sure they're out there right now.

• 38:36Speaker 03

  Your papal?

• 38:38Speaker 03

  Your CPAPal?

• 38:39Amy Poehler?

But I would love to get to a mouth.

• 38:40Speaker 03

  You're a papal person.

• 38:41Amy Poehler?

I'm a papal person, yeah, of course, I'm not an animal. But I'd like to get to a mouth tape and I have tried a mouth tape.

• 38:48Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 38:49Amy Poehler?

Uh, I'm a little worried about, I'm hooked on the moisture that I get from my CPAP. You know, you get like, um, like moist air, it's really nice for the nose.

• 38:59Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 38:59Amy Poehler?

You don't get that with mouth tape.

• 39:00Speaker 03

  No.

• 39:02Amy Poehler?

What kind of mouth tape are you using?

• 39:03Speaker 03

You could, I mean, you have a giant staff. What if one of them just stood over the bed with a little spray bottle? And just...

• 39:12Speaker 03

I mean, so many, because when I see your staff, and I'm polite to them, by the way, which they seem to really appreciate.

• 39:17Amy Poehler?

And they very much appreciate it.

• 39:19Speaker 03

But they're, a lot of them are like, we feel like there's not enough for us to do.

• 39:21Amy Poehler?

Well, no, you know, I like to have them work on the holidays and you always wish them a Merry Christmas and I appreciate that.

• 39:27Speaker 03

  Um, you're allowed to again.

• 39:29Amy Poehler?

  You're allowed to.

• 39:30Speaker 03

Save Merry Christmas again. It's really nice. Um, what was I gonna say? Oh, so, yeah, I was shocked because I do have a hard time breathing through my nose. I feel like I'm, I've been stuffed up like almost the entirety of my life. And yet, when you tape, it kind of forces you to like, early in the night, you're just like breathing through your nose, you're keeping the airways open. I'm a big fan of it.

• 39:50Amy Poehler?

I'm, I'm thinking about switching over to tape.

• 39:52Speaker 03

Now, I should say, and I hope this won't disabuse you of making the switch. One night a week, I wake up at three in the morning and do this.

• 40:04Speaker 03

So if that sounds jarring to you or whoever might be in the room.

• 40:09Amy Poehler?

That would be good for a commercial, for mouth tape.

• 40:12Speaker 03

By the way, do you, because you mentioned butt tape with Jack Black, do you remember the, the Fred's Breathe Right?

• 40:19Amy Poehler?

Oh, wait, you mentioned it on, I must've, must've been in my, because you guys just mentioned it on your podcast.

• 40:24Speaker 03

  Really?

• 40:25Amy Poehler?

Tell people for what they, for those that didn't hear that.

• 40:27Speaker 03

It was a Breathe Right strip, it was a Fred commercial parody. It was a Breathe Right strip, uh, for your butt. That would pull the way, because Breathe Right pulls the nose apart to make it easier to breathe. And so this pulled the butt apart so that when you pass gas, it wouldn't be loud. And it wouldn't wake up the person in bed with you. But it has the best tag because it's the, it's him in bed with wig. And it's quiet, you just hear like.

• 40:56Speaker 03

But then she still goes, oh, what's that smell? Because it doesn't, it doesn't get rid of the smell. Just doesn't make noise anymore.

• 41:04Amy Poehler?

And I remember her being disgusted.

• 41:06Speaker 03

Yeah, really good. Really good disgusted wig.

• 41:08Amy Poehler?

Okay, what about, uh, what do people do at airports to drive you nuts?

• 41:11Speaker 03

  What do people?

• 41:12Amy Poehler?

Well, like, let me ask you this. What time do you arrive for a flight?

• 41:15Speaker 03

  I, a lot of cushion.

• 41:18Amy Poehler?

  Mm hmm. For the pushing.

• 41:19Speaker 03

  Lot of cushion.

• 41:21Amy Poehler?

  Sorry.

• 41:23Amy Poehler?

  Sorry.

• 41:28Speaker 03

I feel like you don't even care. I feel like this is another trap.

• 41:33Speaker 03

I, yeah, we, we get there very early. We never check.

• 41:37Amy Poehler?

  Never check.

• 41:38Speaker 03

  Never check a bag.

• 41:38Amy Poehler?

  Absolutely not.

• 41:39Speaker 03

  It's kind of stunning.

• 41:41Amy Poehler?

You can board, hey, you have young kids, so you can board.

• 41:44Speaker 03

  Yeah, although we're-

• 41:45Amy Poehler?

  That's such a scam.

• 41:47Speaker 03

By the way, we are now out, well outside the zone of what they mean by if you're boarding with a young family.

• 41:52Amy Poehler?

That's not true. Your kids are still young enough.

• 41:54Speaker 03

I think they, I think they mean toddlers.

• 41:57Amy Poehler?

Oh, wait, because your youngest is how, addy-

• 41:59Speaker 03

  Three and a half.

• 42:00Amy Poehler?

  No, I, I, I would say-

• 42:01Speaker 03

  By the way-

• 42:02Amy Poehler?

As a judgmental person at the airport, I would not mind that.

• 42:04Speaker 03

And I think everybody realizes it is better for us to get on first.

• 42:13Amy Poehler?

Sure. I mean, I, I think that's a little bit of a scam. I don't, I don't, like, there's so many people now that board with young children. But you're right. When I had young children, it was nice to be able to have that-

• 42:23Speaker 03

It's also nice for everybody else. I'm just saying, like, if they let you on before the boarding starts and, and our maniacs are in their seats.

• 42:29Amy Poehler?

But I know you can be kind of hypervigilant like I am about when people are doing stuff wrong or getting it wrong or whatever. And I feel like the airport is the ultimate version of that.

• 42:38Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 42:38Amy Poehler?

Like, every single interaction is about power struggle and like, at least for me, figuring out how I can be more efficient next time and hoping other people will follow suit. And just like trying to practice my system in a place where everybody has their own system.

• 42:55Speaker 03

The worst mistake I made, I took just Axel to visit my parents and we went to the airport. And Axel just, who's the most-

• 43:04Speaker 03

Unique of my kids. He just ran full speed and just slid across the airport floor. And I made a mistake of laughing and now he does it. And it's a bummer if I'm so sure the next time he does it, when we're with the whole family, Alexa will be like, as you should, because they're filthy floors.

• 43:22Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 43:22Speaker 03

Like, don't do that. And he'll be like, Daddy liked it.

• 43:24Amy Poehler?

Daddy liked it. Yeah. I know. But that sounds like, that sounds like a great move.

• 43:28Speaker 03

It's a, he kind of, without ever seeing it all.

• 43:31Amy Poehler?

Did he end in like an?

• 43:32Speaker 03

That's what I mean. Without seeing an old breakdancing video, he really ends.

• 43:35Amy Poehler?

He ended with his head, with his head in his hands.

• 43:38Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 43:39Amy Poehler?

  My kid's a funny kid.

• 43:39Speaker 03

  He's a funny kid.

• 43:40Amy Poehler?

  He is a funny kid.

• 43:45Amy Poehler?

• 45:24Amy Poehler?

Okay, speaking of funny, you're doing, you're performing with Oliver, John Oliver.

• 45:27Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 45:28Amy Poehler?

How do you like doing a show with him and with somebody else? Like, you stand up, you love it.

• 45:33Speaker 03

  I love it.

• 45:34Amy Poehler?

  What's good about it?

• 45:34Speaker 03

Well, first of all, I really like John as a person. And so we have a friendship where we would never see each other socially. And so, just because of our schedules, and now we get to hang out once a month. Like, one Sunday a month, we like hang out and we get there for a sound check and then we have like an hour to talk, which is great. And Brooks Wieland, who used to be on SNL, is our opener. So the three of us have a very lovely relationship. The other thing is, especially now because I had a special come out, and so I'm doing new material, and it's lovely to know that the audience is getting John as well.

• 46:08Amy Poehler?

Well, I mean, I've never, I've never met John. He seems lovely.

• 46:11Speaker 03

Can I say something? I feel like so few people have both notes and the laptop.

• 46:18Amy Poehler?

  You know what?

• 46:21Amy Poehler?

Okay, a couple of things. The laptop is a, is a prop. Yeah, this is made out of chocolate. This is edible.

• 46:31Speaker 03

  When it's over.

• 46:31Amy Poehler?

So Bill Simmons asked me about the laptop and he was like, "Do you need it?" And the reason why I like the laptop is because I feel like I can look things up very slowly.

• 46:41Speaker 03

  Right.

• 46:42Amy Poehler?

And, you know, and I can find things on here that, like, for example, I can use this laptop to, Seth, what are you watching, listening to? What do you, where do you go to escape? What do you do? Do you watch something? Do you, like, what, like, "The world is on fire, everything feels intense"? This podcast, for me, is an attempt to just, like, try to connect in a fun, dumb way. What do you watch, do, see?

• 47:09Speaker 03

I'm going to answer your question.

• 47:10Amy Poehler?

And I'm gonna get on the laptop.

• 47:13Speaker 03

  Great.

• 47:13Amy Poehler?

And, and for those that are listening, listen to this.

• 47:17Speaker 03

  But I want to say...

• 47:20Speaker 03

So you got that from an old submarine?

• 47:24Amy Poehler?

I don't know why it's making that noise.

• 47:27Speaker 03

So wait, and that tells you where the nearest submarine is?

• 47:33Amy Poehler?

  I'm tracking my submarine.

• 47:35Speaker 03

This is, I'm very excited about what's happening right now with this podcast.

• 47:39Amy Poehler?

  Thank you.

• 47:40Speaker 03

No, but I think it's the purest form of you.

• 47:44Amy Poehler?

  Thanks.

• 47:45Speaker 03

From the perspective of people who know you, like you've done great work everywhere. But like the amount of people have said to me like, oh my God, is she really like that? Like people love this so much and it's such a joy to be like, yes, this podcast is pure polar.

• 48:01Amy Poehler?

  Thank you for saying that.

• 48:01Speaker 03

Leslie Knope's the best, but like you're cooler than Leslie Knope. And.

• 48:06Amy Poehler?

Well, Leslie is a harder worker than I am and she's less cynical.

• 48:11Speaker 03

Cause you have complained a lot to me about how hard it is to do a podcast already. And you're like seven episodes in.

• 48:16Amy Poehler?

So tired, like I'm literally exhausted.

• 48:19Speaker 03

  Leslie Knope would never.

• 48:20Amy Poehler?

Never, she'd do five a day.

• 48:23Speaker 03

She's such a good listener too. I think that's why.

• 48:25Amy Poehler?

  Thank you.

• 48:25Speaker 03

And so I'm very, I think that this is, you know, again, your skills as a listener on full display and you're the best audience. Like you've always been such a good audience.

• 48:35Amy Poehler?

Thanks dude. I feel the same way about you. I think this is why your show is such an incredible triumph is you are very, very good at making people feel like they're being heard and you enjoy a good time. Those two things are not, like you need those two things in a host.

• 48:50Speaker 03

And I love people being the, if anything you do to facilitate them being the best version of themselves is a joy to do.

• 48:56Amy Poehler?

But do you ever feel when you're doing interviews, like do you ever check out and you're like, oh shit, I haven't been listening?

• 49:02Speaker 03

No, I think I take that part so.

• 49:04Amy Poehler?

  You do?

• 49:04Speaker 03

Yeah. I think the worst thing, my nightmare is, um.

• 49:10Amy Poehler?

Yeah, I've been there a couple of times already.

• 49:13Speaker 03

  Really?

• 49:13Amy Poehler?

Where I've been thinking, I've been future tripping in my head about what I'm gonna say next. And then someone's talking and I'm like, uh-oh.

• 49:21Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 49:21Amy Poehler?

I didn't listen to what they said.

• 49:23Speaker 03

  Yeah. I think I.

• 49:25Amy Poehler?

Did you feel it at all?

• 49:26Speaker 03

Well, there were two times where people said a really sad thing and you said, ha, ha, ha, that's hilarious.

• 49:31Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 49:31Speaker 03

  Like, I mean.

• 49:32Amy Poehler?

  I said LOL.

• 49:34Speaker 03

The Reddit page of this podcast is already like, oh my God, she did it again.

• 49:38Amy Poehler?

LOL, and then I said lots of love, lots of love.

• 49:41Speaker 03

It is the save you. It's funny because you both times thought you saved it and everybody. What did you just see on your?

• 49:48Amy Poehler?

Laptop is at the low battery. It's about to run out. It's at the lowest red line.

• 49:53Speaker 03

I think obviously the uh, it took a lot of battery to make that sound, those sound effects.

• 50:00Speaker 03

That's just sucking, that's sucking the battery right out of that thing.

• 50:04Amy Poehler?

So what do you hook up?

• 50:05Speaker 03

You know what I like? Uh, we mentioned British people.

• 50:08Amy Poehler?

  Pointing again.

• 50:09Speaker 03

I like uh, watching British people break.

• 50:12Amy Poehler?

  Ooh.

• 50:13Speaker 03

Um, there's that like Jimmy Carr show. There's like a panel show. I think it's called Eight Out of Ten Cats. I've never watched a full episode, but I keep getting served.

• 50:23Speaker 03

Like short, short clips of like, um, like British panelists making other British panelists laugh. I just like watching British people break. I feel like, see, you're not better than us.

• 50:32Amy Poehler?

You are such, you're such an Anglophile. You really are. You, you love Brits.

• 50:37Speaker 03

  I do.

• 50:38Amy Poehler?

So you like people trying not to laugh or just like a chat shows, panel shows?

• 50:42Speaker 03

Yeah, I, I mean, in general, I like, you know, it's like watching an old Carol Burnett crap episode. But I do like, but I feel like British people try really hard not to break. So when they break it, I don't know. I, I, it brings me more satisfaction.

• 50:58Amy Poehler?

Okay. So I have one last question, Seth.

• 50:59Speaker 03

  That's it?

• 51:00Amy Poehler?

  I mean.

• 51:01Speaker 03

  This has been just lovely.

• 51:02Amy Poehler?

Has it? Well, you know what though? I do want to talk to you about your podcast because that podcast is one of my favorites. I love those Lonely Island men, boy, man, boys.

• 51:13Speaker 03

  Man, boys.

• 51:13Amy Poehler?

Man, boys. They were so important to all of us.

• 51:16Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 51:16Amy Poehler?

They, I love the like memory lane that you guys go down, but what is so funny to me still is the way that everybody is themselves on that podcast. Like the way in which everybody shows up to it, participates in it, what they remember, how you guys interact with each other. Like, what is it like doing that with them?

• 51:35Speaker 03

It's so fun because one, I love them so much and I can't remember the last time all four of us talked together.

• 51:42Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 51:42Speaker 03

Or even at a meal together.

• 51:43Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 51:44Speaker 03

And I've been saying like, you know, there's so much written about like how as men get older, they have no friendships. So you gotta start a podcast to all lonely men. Start a podcast.

• 51:55Amy Poehler?

Well, I think every man has done that because every single podcast I see is just filled with lonely men trying to make friends.

• 52:01Speaker 03

True story. During the pandemic. You remember my friend Doug Stradlin?

• 52:06Amy Poehler?

  Stradlin.

• 52:07Speaker 03

Stradlin, the best. And Stradlin and I are in a fantasy football league. We did a weekly podcast just about the fantasy football league.

• 52:15Amy Poehler?

  Wow.

• 52:15Speaker 03

That the other 10 guys would listen to. That was what we were doing during the pandemic. And it was like, and then when I started doing professional podcasts, I had to stop that one. And like to those 10 guys, they're like, it's, I mean, we totally get it. You're doing real podcasts now, but man, we missed the, we missed the Stradlin podcast.

• 52:30Amy Poehler?

You have a lot of old college friends.

• 52:32Speaker 03

I'm very, I got a good, and you know, improv friends, like I feel very lucky.

• 52:38Amy Poehler?

Well, it's not just luck, Seth.

• 52:39Speaker 03

Yeah, I put a lot of work into cultivating.

• 52:41Amy Poehler?

You do, and that's what Shoemaker and I were talking about, is the kind of friend you are. You are very, very good at friendship.

• 52:47Speaker 03

I feel like it might be the thing I'm best.

• 52:49Amy Poehler?

You are excellent at friendship. Wh- why is friendship so important to you? What does it do for you? What has it done for you?

• 52:56Speaker 03

I just love having, I thought I was out of the woods.

• 53:01Amy Poehler?

For those listening, I just want you to know his eyes are listening again.

• 53:05Speaker 03

I just love my friends and I've been so lucky to have them. It's just the best. I feel like I get so much more out of them than I put into it.

• 53:12Amy Poehler?

And what, like, what do they do for you? Cause some people, friendship is something that, yes, everybody loves friendship, but they don't participate it in it the way you do. You're a very loyal, consistent and meticulous friend. You pay attention to your friends. They feel very seen by you, I can speak for myself. And you get such delight in your friendships.

• 53:35Speaker 03

Well, I think that like seen is a really good way to put it because I like the way, I like who I am through my, the eyes of my friends. So it would break my heart to, you know, not be held in high opinion by the people I care the most about.

• 53:52Amy Poehler?

You like how you feel when you can see how they see you.

• 53:55Speaker 03

Whenever I'm like, how am I doing as a person? Like when I take stock of who my friends are, I feel very good.

• 54:01Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 54:02Speaker 03

About who I am as a person.

• 54:02Amy Poehler?

And you have a lot of female friends.

• 54:04Speaker 03

  I do.

• 54:04Amy Poehler?

Great, like a great number, I count myself as one of them. Women in your life who are your friend, who you're deeply,

• 54:15Amy Poehler?

tender to and very like, you really like take care of us and you care about us and you, like, I mean, you're the only, you and Shoemaker are the only men that are ever allowed even close to a lot of the SNL women. We gather together as a group. And just recently, we let you sit with us for 30 minutes.

• 54:31Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 54:32Amy Poehler?

And then we said, I think it might have been, maybe it was Tina, but-

• 54:36Speaker 03

Tina said, "Thank you for coming and also thank you for leaving."

• 54:39Amy Poehler?

Yeah. Well, on the way there, I said, "Seth, heads up, we're meeting and I think you have about a half an hour window." And you said, "Fine, I'll take that." And then we sat down at the steakhouse and you hung and then Tina said, "And now it's time to go."

• 54:54Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 54:55Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 54:55Speaker 03

It was, um, can I point out my favorite observations about you guys as a group?

• 54:59Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 55:00Speaker 03

You needed a second table, uh, for all your jackets and every one of you had two totes.

• 55:08Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 55:08Speaker 03

And most of the meal, again, I think if people saw the seven women that were there, they would be like, "Oh my God, how funny was it?" And I would say mostly they were looking through their totes. And at no point were less than two people looking through a tote for something.

• 55:30Amy Poehler?

Well, yeah, because we had put it in the other tote.

• 55:32Speaker 03

  Just comedy legends.

• 55:33Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 55:34Speaker 03

  Rustling through totes.

• 55:35Amy Poehler?

And it was like, and it was a lot of, "Hand me my tote." And it was like, "Is this my tote?"

• 55:39Speaker 03

  Lot of matching totes.

• 55:41Amy Poehler?

Yeah, I think we had gotten some totes.

• 55:42Speaker 03

Matching totes and puffy coats is how I would describe it. It was, I mean, it was the SNL 50th week and it was very cold.

• 55:48Amy Poehler?

  It was.

• 55:48Speaker 03

  But it was-

• 55:49Amy Poehler?

Also, we were all dealing with like a lot of temperature. So our bodies, you know, we're of a certain age. We get hot and cold really fast. So it was a lot of putting on coats, taking off coats.

• 55:57Speaker 03

  It was a lot.

• 55:58Amy Poehler?

And a lot of like, "Oh my, I'm so hot!" And then taking the coat off and then handing it to you to put at the table.

• 56:02Speaker 03

Every coat was louder than the next coat. Just when you moved the coat, it was, uh, like the sail of a schooner, which are like, very hard to hear any conversation due to the rustling of the coat.

• 56:17Amy Poehler?

Which is weird because we were shouting at each other. We do shout at each other across the table very loudly.

• 56:22Speaker 03

Yeah. Also Paula within, Paula Pell,

• 56:25Amy Poehler?

  Yep.

• 56:25Speaker 03

within like five seconds had set up a home office at a third table.

• 56:29Amy Poehler?

She, you're right. She went, she got a third table because she had to do some rewrites.

• 56:32Speaker 03

There was rewrites, like real time rewrites on SNL 50th. She was immediately had like a laptop and also like a TV monitor.

• 56:41Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 56:42Speaker 03

  Hooked up.

• 56:42Amy Poehler?

There's also, when we all go out, there's a ton of food panic.

• 56:45Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 56:46Amy Poehler?

When are we going to get our food? Who ordered, what should we order? And we all fall into very specific categories about like how fast we should order and, and

• 56:56Speaker 03

There was a lot of talk about what you guys are gonna get. And as soon as, uh, the server came over, the minute they spoke, everybody forgot everything that had been agreed upon.

• 57:05Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 57:05Speaker 03

  And, uh,

• 57:06Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 57:06Speaker 03

Cause it went right back to square one.

• 57:08Amy Poehler?

Yeah, and don't forget, you know, I'm a woman of a certain age. I need like 85 grams of protein a day. So we were just like, how many steaks? Do we, we need to get like 40 steaks?

• 57:18Speaker 03

They put us in a private room where you could have a wedding. That's how big it was.

• 57:24Amy Poehler?

Yeah, they knew what they were dealing with.

• 57:25Speaker 03

And yet, within like 10 minutes, I thought we might need a second room. The sprawl.

• 57:31Amy Poehler?

Well, luckily, in 10 minutes, we asked you to leave because it was enough time.

• 57:36Speaker 03

It was so, it was so much, you did that, putting on and taking off coats. Sometimes I think of an SNL sketch just at the table that, for whatever reason, stays with me forever. Do you remember Fred did a sketch once where he was someone at a dinner party who kept taking off and putting on a scarf?

• 57:55Amy Poehler?

  Yes, the longest scarf.

• 57:57Speaker 03

It was a really long scarf and he kept being like, oh my God, it's so hot. And he would take it off and it was like, he had to like loop it around his head and he had a practical scarf and he'd loop it around his head like 10 times while everybody waited. And then he'd start telling a story. He's like, oh my God, it gets so chilly. And then just looping. I think about it all the time.

• 58:13Amy Poehler?

Did it make it on air?

• 58:14Speaker 03

  No.

• 58:15Amy Poehler?

  No.

• 58:15Speaker 03

And I, but I can't, I think about it all the time.

• 58:17Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 58:18Speaker 03

Also, Fred, I think Anilda was his, do you remember his stenographer, court stenographer character?

• 58:23Amy Poehler?

  Oh, yeah.

• 58:24Speaker 03

  And it was,

• 58:25Amy Poehler?

  Did it have a name?

• 58:26Speaker 03

  I think,

• 58:26Amy Poehler?

His court stenographer had a name?

• 58:28Speaker 03

  I think Anilda.

• 58:29Amy Poehler?

  Anilda?

• 58:29Speaker 03

  I think, I'm not sure.

• 58:31Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 58:31Speaker 03

  Typed like this.

• 58:33Amy Poehler?

Oh, kind of a little bit like this.

• 58:34Speaker 03

It was a lot like that. But also paused, paused the trial a lot to look through her bag.

• 58:40Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 58:41Speaker 03

And just would say over and over, I can't find my chapstick. I can't find my chapstick. I would say I don't see a scarf without thinking about the first one or hear somebody say chapstick without thinking about the second.

• 58:51Amy Poehler?

Uh, Fred Armisen is like, and we talk about him all the time on here, like he is truly like the funniest of the funny people, I think. I'm actually gonna see Fred this weekend. Tina and I are gonna do a show. I don't know when this will come out. Your, your people, uh, said they were gonna review it and see if it's, if it's good enough. I gotta run it by like a bunch of lawyers and stuff.

• 59:10Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 59:11Amy Poehler?

  But, um,

• 59:11Speaker 03

  I got a cry guy.

• 59:12Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, you got a guy.

• 59:13Speaker 03

  He's gonna make some cuts.

• 59:14Amy Poehler?

Cry guy's gonna make some cuts.

• 59:17Speaker 03

He's like a super jacked, he's like most, he makes me my protein shakes every morning. And he's like, you gotta stop crying on these pods, man.

• 59:23Amy Poehler?

How many times you cry? And you're like, three. And he's like, three?

• 59:26Speaker 03

  Give me the tape.

• 59:28Amy Poehler?

He's like, we've been working on one, bro. You get one cry a day, bro.

• 59:32Speaker 03

And then the worst is, he's so mean, and then I just start to tear up.

• 59:35Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 59:35Speaker 03

And then it's like, just awful. And then I will say, he's like, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. He's really sweet.

• 59:41Amy Poehler?

  He's sweet, he's sweet.

• 59:41Speaker 03

He's really sweet. He's like, oh my god, I'm like, I'm the problem, I'm the root of the problem. I'm supposed to be here to solve the problem.

• 59:46Amy Poehler?

  I'm called the cry guy.

• 59:47Speaker 03

Yeah, and then he gives me a big hug and like, broke my rib.

• 59:51Speaker 03

  He's so jacked.

• 59:51Amy Poehler?

He squeezes all the tears out, puts them in a cup and drinks it. Um, so can men and women be friends?

• 59:57Speaker 03

  No.

• 59:58Amy Poehler?

Yeah, they can't. All right, well, um.

• 1:00:05Amy Poehler?

Seth, I love you so much.

• 1:00:06Speaker 03

  I love you too.

• 1:00:07Amy Poehler?

This has been so fun. Thank you for doing it. Let's get our glasses on.

• 1:00:10Speaker 03

I'm gonna take this with me, because I know what people can do with DNA.

• 1:00:15Speaker 03

Fucking don't come back here, next time.

• 1:00:17Amy Poehler?

  Surprise, you're a dad.

• 1:00:21Amy Poehler?

This is your child. You're like, what?

• 1:00:23Speaker 03

What? I just cried a little bit.

• 1:00:25Amy Poehler?

I'm like, we get to preboard at the airport now with your child that I got from a tissue. Um, anyway, I love you so much.

• 1:00:33Speaker 03

  I love you too.

• 1:00:34Amy Poehler?

  I love you in LA.

• 1:00:35Speaker 03

  This was a good hang.

• 1:00:36Amy Poehler?

Such a good hang, and I, I can't wait to come back and do your stuff. Although you guys don't really have guests, but.

• 1:00:42Speaker 03

Uh, oh, yes. I thought you meant my talk show. I'm like, yeah, we do.

• 1:00:48Speaker 03

Do you want to guess of my brother's middle name?

• 1:00:53Speaker 03

People, I think people are disappointed that was just the one.

• 1:00:56Amy Poehler?

  Christopher.

• 1:00:57Speaker 03

  Fine.

• 1:01:02Amy Poehler?

Well, that was a great podcast with my old buddy Seth Meyers, who I love talking about the past with, and I love talking about the present with and the future. And, um, you know, I just wanted to take this minute to plug the stuff that he's doing. Um, and he, and he told me if I didn't do it, he would sue me. So, um, uh, Family Trips, his podcast with his brother Josh Dylan Myers.

• 1:01:28Amy Poehler?

Great hilarious stories about family trips and what ensues. And then The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers podcast is a great podcast to listen to if you care about the minutia of SNL and how it's made. And all the guests that came through, those guys are the best and it's so fun listening to them and I listen to them every week. And check those two things out. And thank you Seth for joining us and thank you for listening and never know how to end these things, okay? Bye.
