Between work, school, family obligations, and the endless Halloween hustle, it often feels like there's never a good time to slow down.

• 1:19Karen Kilgariff?

No matter how busy life gets, even a small break can help us recharge, reset, and enjoy the moment.

• 1:24Georgia Hardstark?

Breaks don't have to be the 15 minutes in your car while you wait for your kid to get out of school, or the two minutes while your little pumpkin is tying his shoes.

• 1:31Karen Kilgariff?

Kit Kat gives people permission to take the break they've earned and make it a better break.

• 1:36Georgia Hardstark?

While the world tells us to keep going, Kit Kat reminds us that the best time for a break is now.

• 1:41Karen Kilgariff?

Break now. Have a Kit Kat.

• 1:43Georgia Hardstark?

  Goodbye.

• 2:01Georgia Hardstark?

  Hello.

• 2:02Karen Kilgariff?

  And welcome.

• 2:03Georgia Hardstark?

  To my favorite murder.

• 2:04Karen Kilgariff?

  The minisode.

• 2:05Georgia Hardstark?

Where we read you your stories.

• 2:06Karen Kilgariff?

Would you like to go first?

• 2:07Georgia Hardstark?

Sure. This one's, I'm not gonna tell you what it's called.

• 2:12Karen Kilgariff?

  Okay.

• 2:14Georgia Hardstark?

Hi Karen and Georgia. I wrote this in 2018. Worth another shot.

• 2:18Karen Kilgariff?

  Hey.

• 2:18Georgia Hardstark?

Years ago, I lived in a beautiful apartment in Chicago. A sweet old lady named Loretta owned the building and her hoarding son lived in a unit. The guy was a miserable, scary old fuck who would randomly just scream out loud in his apartment, a lot. I liked to hang out with my friends in the communal yard and he would always come out and yell at us to be quiet. So I thought that maybe if I befriended him, we would be able to party in peace. And it seemed to work.

• 2:44Karen Kilgariff?

Remember when you were young and... Just trying to get partying done.

• 2:47Georgia Hardstark?

  Hopeful and all those things.

• 2:48Karen Kilgariff?

  Yeah.

• 2:49Georgia Hardstark?

Whenever we were outside and he noticed, I would invite him to hang out and it felt as though he enjoyed himself. He would bring his beer and just sort of sit there, sometimes for hours. Even my mom met him. He stopped shitting and I swear he appreciated the company. At one point, I went to his apartment to use the bathroom. Why didn't I just go upstairs and use mine? Stupid, stupid 23-year-old. And you could barely move because of all his crap. There was black mold everywhere and the bathroom was what nightmares were made of, like Trainspotting.

• 3:19Karen Kilgariff?

  Oh, no.

• 3:21Georgia Hardstark?

That thing of like, I got his bathroom, you can use mine. Okay. Like, you're just 23.

• 3:26Karen Kilgariff?

Right. You're just trying to do the easiest thing to get back outside to have some more fun.

• 3:30Georgia Hardstark?

And be like friendly and nice.

• 3:32Karen Kilgariff?

Also, I think the hoarders, I think it was like the TV show is that made, a lot of people first understood what that was.

• 3:39Georgia Hardstark?

  Yeah.

• 3:40Karen Kilgariff?

So it'd be like, that wouldn't be a possibility in your mind if you'd never seen that before.

• 3:43Georgia Hardstark?

Right. I ended up moving out and I hadn't thought about them in years until a friend sent me an article of a murder-suicide. That terrible man stabbed his 84-year-old mother, my old landlord, to death in that terrifying apartment. And he had a five-hour standoff with police until he shot and killed himself. I knew he was a creepy asshole, but it never occurred to me that he could be capable of killing at all, especially his mom, in such a horrific way. R.I.P. Loretta. So stay sexy and don't invite murderers to drink beer with you in your backyard. Love y'all. Janavi.

• 4:17Karen Kilgariff?

I mean, I think there's so many signs of mental health issues and untreated mental health issues there, where just like, yeah, you're doing your best to try to make someone like in your mind happy or something, when actually what they need is serious medication. And they need professionals to be talking to them and looking at them.

• 4:36Georgia Hardstark?

Totally. And then also, like, when we're that young, we're just so naive as to like, what people are capable of.

• 4:43Karen Kilgariff?

Right. How do we solve it?

• 4:44Georgia Hardstark?

We just do things our way without thinking about other people's state of mind.

• 4:48Karen Kilgariff?

Reality. Yeah. Yeah. All right. Well, here's a little upturn.

• 4:52Georgia Hardstark?

  Great.

• 4:53Karen Kilgariff?

It just starts with, I'm terrible at thinking up witty openers, so let's just get straight into it. In a not so recent minisode, it took me a while to get around to writing this, you asked for third man syndrome stories, or similar. And while I'm not 100% sure this totally fits the criteria, this is a story of my own weird psychic, I heard a voice moment. When I was 13, I woke up in the middle of the night in my bed and there was a storm raging outside. Let me preface this by saying that this is the same bedroom I'd slept in since I was six years old. So I'd experienced many a stormy night with wild rain and wind, and normally I'd fall straight back to sleep, no worries. But not this night. As I was drowsily listening to the weather outside, I had a sudden thought pop into my brain, clear and

• 5:37Karen Kilgariff?

loud as anything, saying, "The tree is about to fall on your bedroom."

• 5:41Georgia Hardstark?

  Ah.

• 5:42Karen Kilgariff?

I didn't even hesitate. I was up and out of my bed in seconds, making for the door, and the moment after I'd taken two steps away, the huge tree that had been outside my bedroom for years and years came crashing down, smashing the window and puncturing through the wall to land, glass spraying everywhere, right atop the bed I had just vacated.

• 6:02Georgia Hardstark?

  Holy shit.

• 6:03Karen Kilgariff?

To this day, I have no idea how I knew that tree was about to fall. There was absolutely nothing different whatsoever about that night compared to any other stormy night. Was I, for one brief moment, psychic? Or was it a ghostly intervention from a loved one? Whatever it was, I'm just glad it spared me the damage of having a big old tree and a bunch of glass fall on top of me. I wanted to thank you both for providing me with so many years of entertainment and keeping me company through the ups and downs of life. I'm a day one listener, back when I was in my mid 20s, depressed, incredibly lost, broke and in the throes, a pretty heavy reliance on alcohol. Now I'm in my 30s. I just bought my first house. My god. In this day and age, it's a miracle. Incredible work.

• 6:48Karen Kilgariff?

I'm three years sober. My debut novel, a crime fiction, because of course it is, came out last year. And my second novel just came out two weeks ago. I couldn't have done it without giving up alcohol. Much love to you both. Shaden. P.S. If you're curious, the first novel is called...

• 7:06Georgia Hardstark?

I want to know. Plug your book. You've got to plug your book.

• 7:09Karen Kilgariff?

The first novel is called Down the Rabbit Hole by Shaden Berry. And the second is At Cafe 64. But I think it's only available here in Australia.

• 7:18Georgia Hardstark?

  Oh, man. I'm ordering them.

• 7:19Karen Kilgariff?

  Shaden, what a huge accomplishment.

• 7:22Georgia Hardstark?

  That's enormous.

• 7:23Karen Kilgariff?

And also, you lived through that tree thing.

• 7:25Georgia Hardstark?

That too. I forgot about that part. Wow.

• 7:27Karen Kilgariff?

Right? What a one-two punch of success.

• 7:30Georgia Hardstark?

  Seriously.

• 7:31Karen Kilgariff?

  Amazing.

• 7:31Georgia Hardstark?

That's such a cool, cool letter.

• 7:33Karen Kilgariff?

  So good.

  Goodbye.

• 10:18Georgia Hardstark?

I'm not gonna tell you the name of this one.

• 10:20Karen Kilgariff?

  Okay.

• 10:21Georgia Hardstark?

Hello, MFM team, day one listener, first time writer. I've been waiting for an opportunity to write in and when I heard you ask for people hiding and sealing stories, I knew it was my time to shine.

• 10:31Karen Kilgariff?

  Yes.

• 10:32Georgia Hardstark?

  People hiding, okay.

• 10:33Karen Kilgariff?

  I mean, sure.

• 10:34Georgia Hardstark?

To set the scene, I was 20 years old and had come home from college for Thanksgiving. As a tradition, I met up with all my old high school friends at a local bar where the only form of ID required was the ability to verbally confirm that you were 21.

• 10:48Karen Kilgariff?

  Wow.

• 10:49Georgia Hardstark?

Flash forward to a few hours and many drinks later, when my old high school boyfriend caused a scene that did not involve me, that led to the police being called. The bar was packed, which made it nearly impossible for us to scatter. They're underage. Several of us were rounded up and I immediately started planning my escape. I asked the officers if I could use the bathroom real quick. Drunk in me knew this was my only chance and I wasn't gonna waste it. I went to the women's room but saw no window or other way out. Then I went to the men's room and as fate would have it, there was a hole in the ceiling. This sounds like Karen back in the day, possibly.

• 11:22Karen Kilgariff?

Listen, you gotta do something. You look for your escape hatches.

• 11:25Georgia Hardstark?

  Right.

• 11:25Karen Kilgariff?

Push it to the very limit.

• 11:27Georgia Hardstark?

That's right. I promptly scaled the bathroom sink and crawled up into the drop ceiling. Drunk, but she was drunk, by the way.

• 11:33Karen Kilgariff?

  Yeah.

• 11:34Georgia Hardstark?

I probably should have stayed where I was, but I figured that the cops would come looking for me. I knew my only option was to continue crawling through the ceiling until I found some sort of exterior vent that I could kick out and escape through the parking lot.

• 11:46Karen Kilgariff?

She's just running diehard in her mind.

• 11:48Georgia Hardstark?

  Seriously.

• 11:48Karen Kilgariff?

This is what I have to do.

• 11:49Georgia Hardstark?

  This is gonna go great.

• 11:50Karen Kilgariff?

  Yeah.

• 11:50Georgia Hardstark?

That is not how things went down. I actually made it an impressive distance through the ceiling, held up mostly by wires, before I had a small misstep and my foot came through one of the flimsy panels. Unfortunately for me, this was directly over where the police were standing in the bar.

• 12:05Karen Kilgariff?

  Damn.

• 12:06Georgia Hardstark?

They immediately shone their flashlights through the hole. Just, she's drunk. I wanna remind everyone. Like, that's my favorite part.

• 12:12Karen Kilgariff?

Like, it's all musty and hot and clothes up.

• 12:15Georgia Hardstark?

But she also thinks she's, like, brilliant and, like, doing it.

• 12:18Karen Kilgariff?

And kinda has a little electric.

• 12:20Georgia Hardstark?

Yeah, like, I'm, and my friends are gonna be so impressed. And then Lisa's like, ma'am, can you get down from there?

• 12:25Karen Kilgariff?

And then you're like, is it bleeding? It feels like it's bleeding.

• 12:29Georgia Hardstark?

They shined their flashlight through the hole and ordered me out of the ceiling. I asked how? And they said, back the way you came. So I had to crawl the 30 or so feet back through the ceiling, ugh, so dirty, to the bathroom where I exited and was promptly arrested, along with about 25 other underage people in the bar. She should've got doubly arrested for being so stupid.

• 12:49Karen Kilgariff?

Or she should've been freed for being so genius.

• 12:51Georgia Hardstark?

True. Fortunately, I was able to pay a fine for the underage drinking and was in charge with destruction of property. This story has become lore in my hometown. And I've had a few of my former teachers come up to tell me that they heard it through the grapevine and asked me if it really happened.

• 13:05Karen Kilgariff?

  Yes, yes.

• 13:07Georgia Hardstark?

Yes. This was almost 20 years ago. And I am happy to say I haven't found myself in the back of a cop car since. Stay sexy and don't deploy a mission impossible escape plan when you're three sheets to the wind, Kate.

• 13:20Karen Kilgariff?

Kate, also, you're underage. So this is just you beginning your partying career.

• 13:24Georgia Hardstark?

  Right.

• 13:25Karen Kilgariff?

  This is an incredible start.

• 13:27Georgia Hardstark?

  Mm-hmm.

• 13:27Karen Kilgariff?

  It's so brave.

• 13:28Georgia Hardstark?

  So brave.

• 13:29Karen Kilgariff?

  Just go for it.

• 13:30Georgia Hardstark?

  Just do it.

• 13:31Karen Kilgariff?

  Just, why not?

• 13:32Georgia Hardstark?

If you have a chance, take it. It might not work out the way you think it would.

• 13:35Karen Kilgariff?

Right, but you will have a story.

• 13:37Georgia Hardstark?

  You will.

• 13:37Karen Kilgariff?

And even if it hurts, and even if you get arrested, what are we saying?

• 13:41Georgia Hardstark?

  (laughing)

• 13:42Karen Kilgariff?

  Oh, this is good.

• 13:43Georgia Hardstark?

  Don't listen to our advice.

• 13:44Karen Kilgariff?

Yeah, don't listen to anything, except for this next email.

• 13:47Georgia Hardstark?

  Okay.

• 13:48Karen Kilgariff?

And I'm not going to read you the subject line. It, in all caps, it starts, "It's my time to shine!" with a bunch of I's and E's. "Greetings and salutations. Growing up on a small hobby farm in southeastern Wisconsin, just north of Milwaukee, has its advantages. One of them being that as a child, we would have an annual pig roast on our farm and invite family, friends, and our one neighbor, yes, the one neighbor whose property butted up to our field. This neighbor also happened to be our fifth grade teacher, a very kind older man who never married and took care of his father who lived in a house next to his and shared a driveway with one of our field access roads. He would walk to our home through the field to come to the annual

• 14:28Karen Kilgariff?

pig roast, often bringing his father as well. One year, he brought another gentleman about his age with him. He was clad in aviator sunglasses, a scruffy beard, a Packers baseball cap, and a deep gravelly voice. He simply said his brother was in town and they thought they would come over to enjoy some beers, a freshly slaughtered and roasted pig, and good company."

• 14:49Georgia Hardstark?

  The vegans are...

• 14:51Karen Kilgariff?

  It's rough.

• 14:52Georgia Hardstark?

  Yeah.

• 14:52Karen Kilgariff?

Roast, like, in-the-ground pig roastings were a thing that I saw a lot as a child.

• 14:56Georgia Hardstark?

You did? That's like a thing on a farm?

• 14:58Karen Kilgariff?

It's like a thing, and it's like, it's like a reason to have a barbecue.

• 15:01Georgia Hardstark?

  Yeah.

• 15:01Karen Kilgariff?

  But it's different.

• 15:02Georgia Hardstark?

Okay, never. In the suburbs, we don't usually dig a hole in the astroturf and...

• 15:07Karen Kilgariff?

  Well, I'm sorry about that.

• 15:09Georgia Hardstark?

I'm not, not to the pigs.

• 15:11Karen Kilgariff?

No, it's really rough and pigs are so like us.

• 15:13Georgia Hardstark?

  I know, they're so cute.

• 15:14Karen Kilgariff?

It's very sad. Okay. He simply stated that this was his old college roommate from Ripon College, R-I-P-O-N, assuming. They roomed together freshman year and stayed in touch ever since. He happened to be in town for the EAA in Oshkosh, one of the world's largest gatherings of airplane enthusiasts, featuring vintage World War I and II airplanes, the Blue Angels, and other flying exhibitions. A few days later, our neighbor walked back through the field and was chatting with my dad in the front yard. We thought nothing of it since he was a teacher and had summers off. We thought maybe he needed some construction work done at his house since my dad often did little side jobs for people. Me and my brother scurried over to say hello as visitors in the summer were few and far between.

• 15:57Karen Kilgariff?

We came by just in time to listen to our teacher tell my dad that the man he brought to our pig roast was none other than Harrison Ford.

• 16:08Georgia Hardstark?

That's, I was like, oh, it's, it's his lover, whoever this is.

• 16:12Karen Kilgariff?

Right. It's some sort, finally he gets to be himself.

• 16:14Georgia Hardstark?

  Yeah.

• 16:14Karen Kilgariff?

  Or something.

• 16:15Georgia Hardstark?

His boyfriend. He's like, oh, my friend, my college friend. It's Harrison Ford?

• 16:20Karen Kilgariff?

It's Harrison Ford and, and it's basically like, I'm a normal experience Sherpa for my old friend Harrison, who now lives in the weirdest world of all time and all he wants to do,

• 16:29Georgia Hardstark?

  Yeah.

• 16:29Karen Kilgariff?

stand in a backyard and drink a beer with normal people.

• 16:32Georgia Hardstark?

  And not get recognized.

• 16:33Karen Kilgariff?

  And they did it.

• 16:34Georgia Hardstark?

  Oh my god.

• 16:36Karen Kilgariff?

  It's, okay.

• 16:36Georgia Hardstark?

Because Harrison Ford was a construction worker too.

• 16:38Karen Kilgariff?

  Yes.

• 16:39Georgia Hardstark?

That whole thing of him getting fucking discovered.

• 16:41Karen Kilgariff?

  Yes.

• 16:42Georgia Hardstark?

By being the hottest fucking construction worker that's ever lived.

• 16:44Karen Kilgariff?

  I mean.

• 16:45Georgia Hardstark?

  Okay, wild.

• 16:46Karen Kilgariff?

Okay, wait. Our teacher wanted to thank my dad and our family for allowing him to just be a guy and hang out without prying and making a big deal about him being there. Since this teacher had had me and my brothers in class in the 90s, he knew we were all big fans of Star Wars and Indiana Jones and was proud of us for not making it a big deal. In reality, we had no clue the man was.

• 17:07Georgia Hardstark?

Yeah, when you're a kid, you don't pay attention to adults. Like, that's the most boring thing in the world.

• 17:12Karen Kilgariff?

But it sounds like they, this, like, they were graduates from high school.

• 17:16Georgia Hardstark?

Yeah, it does sound like they're older.

• 17:17Karen Kilgariff?

But they're just kind of like, oh, it's just a guy and that's fine. And it literally is Harrison Ford.

• 17:22Georgia Hardstark?

  Oh, my god.

• 17:22Karen Kilgariff?

  Standing around the pig.

• 17:23Georgia Hardstark?

They're like, we would have bothered him. Are you fucking kidding me?

• 17:26Karen Kilgariff?

You get to bother Harrison. Sorry, you're Han Solo.

• 17:29Georgia Hardstark?

Dude, you're Han Solo, you're fucking Indiana Jones.

• 17:32Karen Kilgariff?

  Indiana Jones.

• 17:33Georgia Hardstark?

Like, come on, okay. Tell me more, I want to, I want to know everything.

• 17:36Karen Kilgariff?

I just started thinking about watching Raiders of the Lost Ark for the first time in the Plaza Theater downtown Petaluma. And how I was like, this is it.

• 17:43Georgia Hardstark?

It's the best, it's the best.

• 17:45Karen Kilgariff?

  It's, he's amazing.

• 17:46Georgia Hardstark?

  Yeah.

• 17:47Karen Kilgariff?

Our dumb little kid brains could have cared less who our neighbor brought to the party since we were all jacked up on soda, ice cream, and playing with friends and cousins.

• 17:55Georgia Hardstark?

  Right.

• 17:56Karen Kilgariff?

Well, that's the story. Harrison Ford came to my house. Stay sexy and may the force be with you, Natalie.

• 18:02Georgia Hardstark?

  Oh, my god, Natalie.

• 18:03Karen Kilgariff?

  It's so good, Natalie.

• 18:04Georgia Hardstark?

  That's so good.

• 18:05Karen Kilgariff?

  Oh, shit.

• 18:07Georgia Hardstark?

That's one of the big ones. And they didn't know. I wonder if the parents knew.

• 18:12Karen Kilgariff?

  I know.

• 18:13Georgia Hardstark?

  They must have.

• 18:14Karen Kilgariff?

Or maybe the parents were just old enough to kind of not be that familiar with it.

• 18:19Georgia Hardstark?

  Right, right.

• 18:20Karen Kilgariff?

They were like, kind of hippies that were like,

• 18:22Georgia Hardstark?

  Here's this guy.

• 18:23Karen Kilgariff?

  Yeah.

• 18:24Georgia Hardstark?

  Fucking amazing.

• 18:25Karen Kilgariff?

They were anti-pop culture. What would you say if Harrison Ford was a drop-by at a party that you had? Or a side guest?

• 18:33Georgia Hardstark?

Okay, introduce yourself as Harrison Ford.

• 18:36Karen Kilgariff?

  Hello, I'm Harrison Ford.

• 18:37Georgia Hardstark?

Oh, hey, wow, nice to meet you. Big fan. That's it.

• 18:41Karen Kilgariff?

Perfect. Perfectly done, with a little finger to say, we're done now.

• 18:44Georgia Hardstark?

  That's it.

• 18:45Karen Kilgariff?

  That's it.

• 18:46Georgia Hardstark?

I'm not gonna freak out, but like, I'm gonna acknowledge that I know you're Harrison Ford.

• 18:50Karen Kilgariff?

I'm drawing the line that I'm not freaking out right now.

• 18:52Georgia Hardstark?

Big fan, well, I'm George Hardstark from my favorite merch.

• 18:54Karen Kilgariff?

Oh, wait a second. My daughter told me about that.

• 18:59Georgia Hardstark?

  Okay. This will last.

• 19:01Karen Kilgariff?

  Want me to do it?

• 19:02Georgia Hardstark?

Okay, again, what would you do? Hi, I'm, I'm, hi, I'm Harrison Ford.

• 19:05Karen Kilgariff?

Oh, god, stop it! Just scream right into the face. I love to scream right into people's faces.

• 19:11Georgia Hardstark?

  Especially famous people.

• 19:13Karen Kilgariff?

  They love it.

• 19:58Karen Kilgariff?

Research shows patients spend the equivalent of an eight-hour workday every month coordinating their own care.

• 20:04Georgia Hardstark?

Nobody hands you a roadmap when you're dealing with a diagnosis or ongoing health issues.

  That's why there's Solace Health.

  Goodbye.

• 20:56Karen Kilgariff?

You know a favorite M-word? Magnesium.

• 20:58Georgia Hardstark?

Like the kind that's in Dr. Teal's magnesium spray.

• 21:01Karen Kilgariff?

Made from a proprietary blend of topical minerals, powered by pure Epsom salt and natural Dead Sea salt, it's designed to help you relax and get in the right state of mind for a good night's rest.

• 21:11Georgia Hardstark?

If you need a reset after a crazy day, make Dr. Teal's magnesium spray part of your nighttime routine. It's an effortless way to get a boost of topical magnesium that can help you relax your body and mind before bedtime.

• 21:22Karen Kilgariff?

Dr. Teal's magnesium spray comes in a lightweight, fast drying formula.

• 21:26Georgia Hardstark?

Just shake it up and generously spritz onto the soles of your feet and massage until absorbed.

• 21:31Karen Kilgariff?

I was kind of blown away the first time I used this spray because I do have problems sleeping. And when there's something this simple, you just sprayed on your feet and suddenly you're asleep. And the next morning you're like, wait, what happened? Did my problem just get solved? Like, it actually is that easy.

• 21:46Georgia Hardstark?

And your stinky feet now smell like lavender. Like, what more do you want?

• 21:49Karen Kilgariff?

How dare you call my feet stinky?

• 21:51Georgia Hardstark?

For wellness, you can feel find Dr. Teal's magnesium spray online or in your local bath aisle.

• 21:57Karen Kilgariff?

  Goodbye.

• 21:59Georgia Hardstark?

Okay, this is a follow up to one of the stories I did recently about the girl who her cat died. She went out to the like wharf to say goodbye with it and ended up throwing it into the fucking water. And then she saw the coast guard like, come grab her poor cat's body, right? Remember the cat's name was Jaffe?

• 22:20Karen Kilgariff?

  Yeah.

• 22:21Georgia Hardstark?

So this is a response to that.

• 22:24Georgia Hardstark?

Dear Karen, Georgia, and MFM crew, including animals. I speak for all murderinos when I say we love you and everything you do. You are the friends in our ears throughout every phase of life.

• 22:33Karen Kilgariff?

  I'm feeling a butt coming.

• 22:35Georgia Hardstark?

Yeah, right. Today I was listening to mini-sode 463 and the story about Jaffe, the cat's botched water burial. While the story was humorous, I found my heart breaking for her mom, the cat's mom, especially with my own cat purring happily on my lap as I listened. First, I want to discourage anyone from making the same innocent mistake for obvious reasons. Finding unclaimed animal remains can incite a whole fighting ring and/or animal abuse investigation.

• 23:01Karen Kilgariff?

  Oh, shit.

• 23:03Georgia Hardstark?

Second, as a veterinarian, I did want to offer Jaffe's mom some solace. When domestic animals' remains are found and unclaimed, the police take them to the local shelter where they are cremated. So botched Viking attempt aside, your baby was still cremated. Because remember she was like, they threw it onto the fucking. Into, you know, the trash or whatever.

• 23:24Karen Kilgariff?

  Yes.

• 23:24Georgia Hardstark?

  No.

• 23:24Karen Kilgariff?

  That's great.

• 23:25Georgia Hardstark?

  Yeah.

• 23:25Karen Kilgariff?

  They took care of it.

• 23:26Georgia Hardstark?

I hope Jaffe's mom can rest a little easier knowing that her baby was still cared for in the way she wanted. And as a response to Karen and Georgia's plug for Where Have We Been stories, remember, like, where do you listen to us?

• 23:37Karen Kilgariff?

  Mm-hmm.

• 23:38Georgia Hardstark?

You have been in my ears as I travel for work all over the world, with the coolest place being field work in South Africa, as myself and my collaborators work to investigate the impacts of infectious diseases on African lion populations.

• 23:52Karen Kilgariff?

  Whoa.

• 23:53Georgia Hardstark?

So, yes, by extension, you have worked with a few hundred lions. She's a veterinarian.

• 23:57Karen Kilgariff?

  That's incredible.

• 23:58Georgia Hardstark?

Anyway, thanks for all that you do. Love and hugs to the MFM crew, and especially to Jaffe's mom, Heather.

• 24:03Karen Kilgariff?

Heather, that was really nice to support in that moment as a professional.

• 24:08Georgia Hardstark?

  Yes.

• 24:08Karen Kilgariff?

To step forward and say, quiet down, everybody.

• 24:11Georgia Hardstark?

Two things. Don't ever do that again. Yes, it was absolutely a mistake, and here's why.

• 24:15Karen Kilgariff?

  And don't worry about it.

• 24:15Georgia Hardstark?

But also, you're forgiven, and it's okay.

• 24:18Karen Kilgariff?

And you kind of got what you wanted ultimately.

• 24:20Georgia Hardstark?

  Yes.

• 24:21Karen Kilgariff?

Okay, here's my last one. This is a trash parent story, to beat all trash parent stories.

• 24:27Georgia Hardstark?

  Oh, God, okay.

• 24:28Karen Kilgariff?

Hello, ladies. I love the pod. I've been listening since 2018, when my high school ceramics teacher recommended your podcast.

• 24:34Georgia Hardstark?

  Hey.

• 24:35Karen Kilgariff?

Thank you, Ms. Warner. My sister and I were the type of children that my mom had to ask not to talk about dead things before her friends came over. We still did, and still do. I love this community. Anyway, the story I have for you isn't morbid, but a trash mom story. I don't think my mom was a trash parent, but my sister and I were the youngest after five older siblings.

• 24:54Georgia Hardstark?

  Oh, wow, yeah.

• 24:57Georgia Hardstark?

She was done at number three, and now it's like...

• 24:59Karen Kilgariff?

Seven. She went to seven. Dang. So, our complaints were not exactly taken seriously. Like, the second time I broke my leg on our trampoline.

• 25:09Georgia Hardstark?

  Oh, my God.

• 25:09Karen Kilgariff?

  My mom didn't believe me.

• 25:13Karen Kilgariff?

My mom didn't believe me and made me get off the trampoline by myself and walk it off.

• 25:17Georgia Hardstark?

  Walk off your broken leg.

• 25:18Karen Kilgariff?

After taking one step and immediately collapsing, I was taken to the hospital and then forbidden from ever touching the trampoline again.

• 25:25Georgia Hardstark?

Oh my god, how many broken bones does seven children bring you? Like, it's like every week, every week, someone's breaking a fucking bone.

• 25:33Karen Kilgariff?

Oh, you're constantly in the ER?

• 25:34Georgia Hardstark?

  Yeah.

• 25:34Karen Kilgariff?

  And you're not scared anymore?

• 25:36Georgia Hardstark?

  No.

• 25:36Karen Kilgariff?

It's like you've become like an ER nurse yourself, yeah. That rule, of course, did not apply to my siblings, so it's like victim blaming. So every summer for the rest of my childhood, I got to sit on the grass and watch them jump around happily without me.

• 25:51Georgia Hardstark?

  No.

• 25:51Karen Kilgariff?

Punished. But this story isn't about me. Another accident happened on the same backyard trampoline.

• 25:57Georgia Hardstark?

  Those are so fucking dangerous.

• 25:59Karen Kilgariff?

They really are. I mean, but they're also so fun.

• 26:02Georgia Hardstark?

  Yeah, but, yes.

• 26:04Karen Kilgariff?

  Well, that.

• 26:05Georgia Hardstark?

  Okay.

• 26:05Karen Kilgariff?

My older brother was jumping while holding my sister and accidentally, in an parentheses, it says probably intentionally, dropped her on her back. She burst into tears and wouldn't move. My parents carried her to the couch and told her to rest, even though she insisted something was wrong. They didn't believe her and life went on, even as she complained for years about back pain and limited mobility.

• 26:26Georgia Hardstark?

  What?

• 26:27Karen Kilgariff?

Flash forward to when she was 16. She got into a sledding accident where she flew off a jump and crashed hard. After a couple hours of labored breathing, my mom finally called my paramedic dad.

• 26:37Georgia Hardstark?

  Wait, okay, I'm, yep.

• 26:39Karen Kilgariff?

Maybe he became one after all of those hospitalizations.

• 26:43Georgia Hardstark?

  Okay.

• 26:44Karen Kilgariff?

My mom called my paramedic dad, who told her to take my sister to the hospital immediately.

• 26:47Georgia Hardstark?

  Finally.

• 26:48Karen Kilgariff?

There they took scans and discovered she had broken her sternum in the crash.

• 26:53Georgia Hardstark?

Okay, in the crash, she broke her sternum?

• 26:55Karen Kilgariff?

  Yes.

• 26:55Georgia Hardstark?

  Okay, ow, oh my god.

• 26:57Karen Kilgariff?

  That hurts so bad.

• 26:57Georgia Hardstark?

Yeah, can't breathe, you can't take a breath probably.

• 26:59Karen Kilgariff?

Her knee hit her chest and cracked it. That's intense.

• 27:03Georgia Hardstark?

  Oh my god.

• 27:04Karen Kilgariff?

But when the doctor delivered the news, he added, "I thought you said your daughter had never broken a bone before." My mom replied, "She hasn't." "Well," the doctor said, "in the x-rays we took, we found old fractures in her back." That's right. My sister broke her back at 10 years old and wasn't treated until she was 16.

• 27:20Georgia Hardstark?

  Oh my god.

• 27:22Karen Kilgariff?

My parents are divorced and my dad loves to bring up all the injuries that happened on her watch. But my sister complained to him too, and he also brushed her off.

• 27:30Georgia Hardstark?

And he was a fucking paramedic, so he should have known better.

• 27:32Karen Kilgariff?

  And he was a paramedic.

• 27:34Georgia Hardstark?

And he still let them have a trampoline?

• 27:36Karen Kilgariff?

You don't go over and at least do one of those, like, how does this feel?

• 27:39Georgia Hardstark?

One, two, one, two, you're fine.

• 27:40Karen Kilgariff?

Yeah. Can you see this finger?

• 27:42Georgia Hardstark?

  Yeah.

• 27:43Karen Kilgariff?

  No, my back is broken.

• 27:44Georgia Hardstark?

  Can you see this finger?

• 27:45Karen Kilgariff?

  Can you?

• 27:45Georgia Hardstark?

  Because we're fucking blaming you.

• 27:46Karen Kilgariff?

Stay off the fucking trampoline. Cheers to my strong ass sister, who, side note, walked up that snowy hill by herself after she broke her sternum so my mom would stop freaking out. No tears.

• 27:58Georgia Hardstark?

  Oh my god.

• 27:59Karen Kilgariff?

And then it just says, anyway, be aware of trampolines. SSDGM AJ.

• 28:03Georgia Hardstark?

AJ, great email. Everyone send us you and your siblings injuries. Like, your childhood fucked up injuries that, like, nobody paid attention to.

• 28:13Karen Kilgariff?

  Yes.

• 28:13Georgia Hardstark?

  I want those so bad.

• 28:15Karen Kilgariff?

My sister fully broke her wrist, and my mom was like, when she wouldn't stop crying, my mom goes, fine, put a cold compress on it.

• 28:22Georgia Hardstark?

  She was a nurse!

• 28:23Karen Kilgariff?

  Yep.

• 28:24Georgia Hardstark?

Vince absolutely was chased through the sliding glass door by his brother. His brother was chasing him with a knife or something, of course, and, like, broke his arm and, you know, it was like, get over it.

• 28:36Karen Kilgariff?

That happened to my friend Christine, got chased through the sliding glass door. And, like, it's that thing where, like, everybody's fighting and you think this one thing has happened, and suddenly it's like, holy shit.

• 28:47Georgia Hardstark?

Everyone stops to be like, where's the blood coming from?

• 28:50Karen Kilgariff?

  Yes.

• 28:50Georgia Hardstark?

  Oh my god.

• 28:51Karen Kilgariff?

The kids have to, like, how do we make it so mom doesn't find out we just broke the sliding glass door?

• 28:55Georgia Hardstark?

  So hilarious childhood injuries.

• 28:57Karen Kilgariff?

  Right.

• 28:58Georgia Hardstark?

  Is what we want.

• 28:58Karen Kilgariff?

We need the people who they happen to to be okay today.

• 29:01Georgia Hardstark?

  Yes.

• 29:02Karen Kilgariff?

  Yes. That's for us.

• 29:04Georgia Hardstark?

  Yes. Thanks, guys.

• 29:06Karen Kilgariff?

• 29:16Karen Kilgariff?

Oh, I never say that part. That's why.

• 29:17Georgia Hardstark?

Oh, yeah, I know. Yes, she's so right.
