  Can we call my girlfriend?

• 0:33Speaker 02

  No, we're not talking.

• 0:34Adam Friedland?

  Okay.

• 0:35Speaker 02

  I talked to her enough.

• 0:37Adam Friedland?

  You've talked to mine enough?

• 0:39Speaker 02

You want me to talk to your girlfriend?

• 0:41Adam Friedland?

Did he say he talked to mine enough?

• 0:44Adam Friedland?

Oh, I thought you were doing a joke like, "I talked to her enough." Yeah, like, ha, ha. That would have been good. You want to run that again? Can we call my girlfriend?

• 0:51Speaker 02

Yeah. I'd like to call your girlfriend.

• 0:54Adam Friedland?

No, no, no, no, no. You're supposed to say, "No, I talked to her enough."

• 0:59Adam Friedland?

More. Okay, we'll do it a third time. From the top.

• 1:02Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:03Adam Friedland?

Let's get an edit point. Can we call my girlfriend?

• 1:06Speaker 02

No. I talked to her enough.

• 1:14Adam Friedland?

  Wait.

• 1:44Adam Friedland?

Hello and welcome back to The Adam Friedland Show. I'm host Adam Friedland. First off, come see me live. I'm at the Regent Theater as part of the Netflix's Joke Fest. On May 9th, Justin will be there. San Francisco, California, May 29th to the 30th. Portland, Oregon, 6/11 to 13. My guest this week is legendary talk show host Maury Povich, who of course hosted The Maury Show from 91 to 2022. It dominated daytime TV with lurid stories from around the nation. I was very excited to talk to Maury, but before we jump in, quick personal life update. I'm so excited to announce that I have welcomed my first son into the world. Everyone, please meet Adam Jr. And of course, here's my lovely wife.

• 2:29Adam Friedland?

One big happy family. The joke is that I will be requiring a paternity test because Queen Elizabeth fucked a Chinese guy, and I'm raising him as my own.

• 2:42Adam Friedland?

I love you, Adam Jr. And maybe it's on you guys for thinking that this was from cheating and paternity tests. Maybe she was just pregnant with God's wife, or God's son, God. Please enjoy the episode. We can do Asian, right? Ladies and gentlemen, we know him well, but today, he has a secret to tell us. I can't believe it. We're here, this is a huge exclusive. Maury Povich, everyone. Television legend. You have a secret. I can't believe the gallery. I love it. Terrific. Dude, good to see you, Adam. This is how much of a pro he is. He's in retirement,

• 3:24Adam Friedland?

but he walks in and he's like, oh, this is a... Who's this prick think he is? Competing for the ratings, I think. I know. And the only reason I'm here is you have big ratings. Huge ratings. I know. We've... They're kind of not real. We hired a Russian box farm. They're not real? Yeah. It's the same people... Yeah. It's the same people that stole the election for Trump in 2020. Oh, really? I don't know. Do they steal elections, you know? You probably know. They don't. You know all the secrets of the world? No. No. You were telling me. You've rubbed shoulders with popes?

• 4:08Adam Friedland?

No, I have never rubbed shoulders with a pope. You told me you gave a back massage to Pope Benedict.

• 4:16Adam Friedland?

Was that the Nazi one? Yeah. Yeah, the Nazi, yeah. Who they put into retirement. But it was... Hitler Youth, let's be fair. Let's be fair.

• 4:27Adam Friedland?

Well, we had one of the funniest introductions to one another.

• 4:31Speaker 02

First of all, let's just figure this out.

• 4:33Adam Friedland?

We should get this out of the way.

• 4:34Speaker 02

Let's start at this right now.

• 4:34Adam Friedland?

  Yes.

• 4:35Speaker 02

Are you interviewing me, or am I interviewing you?

• 4:38Adam Friedland?

I like, I think our thing is keeping it vague. I want to do that.

• 4:42Speaker 02

Do you want to tell them the history of this?

• 4:44Adam Friedland?

Of course, I was asked to be in Interview Magazine. They did a, did you see the pictures of me?

• 4:52Speaker 02

  No.

• 4:53Adam Friedland?

Some of the most embarrassing ones ever.

• 4:55Speaker 02

No, but, and so I was asked to get on here and talk to you.

• 4:59Adam Friedland?

  Yes.

• 5:00Speaker 02

And I thought that you were interviewing me. And obviously, I was supposed to be interviewing you.

• 5:07Adam Friedland?

They cut me yelling at the magazine, if you remember.

• 5:10Speaker 02

  Oh, I didn't know that.

• 5:11Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 5:12Speaker 02

But all I knew, when we finally figured out that this was the case, was I said to you, you know, you're talking a lot.

• 5:19Adam Friedland?

You say, you talk a lot.

• 5:21Speaker 02

  Yeah, you talk a lot.

• 5:22Adam Friedland?

  You're relentless, in fact.

• 5:24Speaker 02

And then you said, well, what am I supposed to do? I'm supposed to be interviewed. I said, oh, you're supposed to be interviewed? I thought I was supposed to be interviewed.

• 5:32Adam Friedland?

I mean, how would you imagine that you're not being interviewed in a thing called Interview Magazine? There is no way in hell you would have said yes if you knew you were supposed to be interviewing me.

• 5:44Speaker 02

  There is no fucking way.

• 5:49Speaker 02

  Why would I do that?

• 5:52Adam Friedland?

They were defrauding you. You probably, you got an email from Interview Magazine. How the hell would you have thought you were being interviewed? They were like, yeah, we got some schmuck kid to interview you. And by kid, he's 39 years old.

• 6:06Speaker 02

  39 years old.

• 6:07Adam Friedland?

And he's done not much with his life, but...

• 6:10Speaker 02

What do you mean? You're a big star.

• 6:12Adam Friedland?

Huge, in fact, yeah. Massive these days.

• 6:15Speaker 02

You have a half a million on YouTube.

• 6:16Adam Friedland?

Just on YouTube, yeah. Across all other platforms, it's probably 200 million to, half a billion.

• 6:24Speaker 02

  Half a billion?

• 6:25Adam Friedland?

Yeah, probably. Yes, yeah, it is.

• 6:28Speaker 02

Well, why don't you just say three billion? That'd be half the world.

• 6:31Adam Friedland?

The, I was talking to you, let's go back to this interview magazine thing. We had a 45-minute scheduled conversation. It was minute 35.

• 6:40Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 6:40Adam Friedland?

And you were like, can I stop you right there? I was telling you about my family. I was telling you.

• 6:46Speaker 02

And I was saying, why are you talking about yourself like this?

• 6:50Adam Friedland?

The concept of two people thinking that they're being interviewed. It's almost as if I'm jealous, like I didn't come up with it for the show.

• 7:00Speaker 02

I've been around a long time.

• 7:01Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 7:01Speaker 02

That's the craziest moment in terms of interviewing that I've ever, ever had. I mean, I've done, maybe in my lifetime, 50,000 interviews. Nothing tops that.

• 7:14Adam Friedland?

Is that, it is but an honor, sir. And I, and you've, you've seen it all, too.

• 7:19Speaker 02

  I have.

• 7:20Adam Friedland?

Yeah. I can't imagine what was going through your mind. You're like, this motherfucker will shut up. I've been in show business for, how many, five decades, six decades?

• 7:32Speaker 02

  Six.

• 7:33Adam Friedland?

Six decades. And this guy is telling me, he was supposed to be interviewing me, about my illustrious career. He's telling me about how his father's disappointment that he didn't go to law school.

• 7:44Speaker 02

Yeah, and he ended up in Washington at George Washington University. And he started in these kind of low-rent comedy clubs.

• 7:51Adam Friedland?

Can you imagine if I was supposed to be interviewing you? It would have been perhaps the worst interview of all time. You, you of course are a native of our nation's kind.

• 8:03Speaker 02

  Not many.

• 8:03Adam Friedland?

  Not many.

• 8:04Speaker 02

I mean, we, I mean, we, we are so rare. See, we grew up thinking that the president, he wasn't the president of the United States. He was the mayor.

• 8:15Adam Friedland?

  Mayor Nixon.

• 8:16Speaker 02

Right, or whatever. And the Congress was the city council. That's how we grew up, because we had no home rule. When I was born in 1939.

• 8:26Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 8:26Speaker 02

And so, we didn't have home rule to the early 60s. And we didn't even, you know, that was kind of a leaner. We still don't have full home rule.

• 8:34Adam Friedland?

Yeah, you're not really as much of a citizen.

• 8:37Speaker 02

We got a congressperson, but she can't vote.

• 8:41Adam Friedland?

  So embarrassing.

• 8:42Speaker 02

  I mean, really?

• 8:43Adam Friedland?

Yeah. She just has to observe.

• 8:45Speaker 02

  Right.

• 8:46Adam Friedland?

She says, "Great job, everyone. You're doing phenomenal."

• 8:48Speaker 02

  We're voting for a non-voting congressperson.

• 8:52Adam Friedland?

I was there shortly after the legendary mayor, Marion Barry.

• 8:58Speaker 02

I covered him for so long, you wouldn't believe it. I covered him when he was at Howard University.

• 9:03Adam Friedland?

  Oh, as a youth?

• 9:04Speaker 02

  As a youth.

• 9:05Adam Friedland?

Did you know he had a future?

• 9:08Speaker 02

Oh, yeah, because he was a great spokesperson for what they called SNCC, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. And he was terrific.

• 9:18Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 9:18Speaker 02

  And very impressive.

• 9:22Speaker 02

I never knew Marion would ever run for political office because,

• 9:25Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 9:26Speaker 02

you know, he was out there during the civil rights movements of the early 1960s.

• 9:29Adam Friedland?

Yeah. I was there for Mayor Fenty, who was Rihanna's cousin, I believe.

• 9:34Speaker 02

  Oh, really?

• 9:35Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 9:36Speaker 02

I was gone by then. What years were you there?

• 9:39Adam Friedland?

I was there in 2006. I was there for the Obama election. So I started in 2006.

• 9:46Speaker 02

  You're a newbie.

• 9:47Adam Friedland?

Yeah, newbie. It was an amazing night. I ran to the White House, and I shouted at the building. I was like, "Bush, you asshole. Fuck you."

• 9:55Speaker 02

  Really?

• 9:56Adam Friedland?

It was a really cool night.

• 9:57Speaker 02

Actually, he's a friend of mine.

• 9:59Adam Friedland?

  George Bush?

• 9:59Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 10:00Adam Friedland?

  Oh, yeah?

• 10:01Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 10:01Adam Friedland?

  He's nice, I imagine.

• 10:03Speaker 02

  Lovely.

• 10:03Adam Friedland?

Yeah. Is he like, does he feel, he feels bad?

• 10:07Speaker 02

  Feels bad?

• 10:07Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 10:08Speaker 02

  Now?

• 10:09Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, I mean.

• 10:09Speaker 02

I think the best part of his life right now, to me, is how he's conducted himself after he got out of office.

• 10:15Adam Friedland?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. But have you seen his paintings before?

• 10:18Speaker 02

  Yeah. He never painted.

• 10:21Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 10:22Speaker 02

  Until he left office.

• 10:23Adam Friedland?

Yeah. Have you seen the early ones?

• 10:26Speaker 02

  The portraits?

• 10:28Adam Friedland?

He became quite a good painter. He got lessons and stuff. But the early naive work of Bush is really interesting.

• 10:39Speaker 02

  What scribbles?

• 10:40Adam Friedland?

No, I mean, I'll show you right now. But he's like in a, there's something about washing, you're cleansing yourself of something. He's in a shower and, or at a bathtub. And he's looking in one direction. There's a mirror for, I assume shaving. And his reflection is looking back at him. And it's as if the ghosts of the Iraqi, anyway.

• 11:10Speaker 02

He was very, he was very kind to me.

• 11:12Adam Friedland?

Does he feel bad about the Iraq war? Does he was like, oh?

• 11:14Speaker 02

  I have no idea.

• 11:15Adam Friedland?

Yeah, yeah. Have you asked him? You're like?

• 11:16Speaker 02

No. I'll tell you, first of all.

• 11:19Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 11:21Speaker 02

We were, we were golf buddies for 25 years before he ever got to be president.

• 11:26Adam Friedland?

  He's good? I hear you're good.

• 11:27Speaker 02

  Decent, yes.

• 11:29Adam Friedland?

  What's your handicap?

• 11:31Speaker 02

  Five.

• 11:32Adam Friedland?

  Five?

• 11:34Speaker 02

Yeah, but it used to be better.

• 11:36Adam Friedland?

  My own.

• 11:36Speaker 02

  I'm going way up now.

• 11:37Adam Friedland?

Trump's, Trump, he's got weird form, but he hits it straight. I saw that video of him with Bryson DeChambeau.

• 11:44Speaker 02

Yeah, okay. He hits a ball straight and then the guy, the caddy, the forecaddy?

• 11:48Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 11:50Speaker 02

  Throws it a little farther.

• 11:51Adam Friedland?

Yeah, I heard he shot an 18 once.

• 11:58Adam Friedland?

It's like a dictator would, right? It's like Putin scoring 15 goals.

• 12:02Speaker 02

So George Bush would invite me and a buddy, because we had this golf group of 12 guys that played golf every year for like 20 some years.

• 12:10Adam Friedland?

Who else you got? Norman Schwarzkopf?

• 12:12Speaker 02

  No, no.

• 12:13Adam Friedland?

  Jim Baker?

• 12:13Speaker 02

No, no, no famous people. Oh, one famous person.

• 12:18Adam Friedland?

  Michael J. Fox.

• 12:19Speaker 02

You ever heard of Taxi Cheers? All those friends?

• 12:24Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 12:25Speaker 02

  Director Jimmy Burrows.

• 12:26Adam Friedland?

  Jimmy Burrows.

• 12:27Speaker 02

Jimmy Burrows, and he was one of the group. And Jimmy. Basically, he and the Charles brothers created Cheers. And so, and he directed all the Friends stuff.

• 12:39Adam Friedland?

And Frasier, too? That was a spinoff.

• 12:41Speaker 02

  Frasier 2.

• 12:42Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 12:43Speaker 02

Absolutely. And so Jimmy was part of that. That's the only other big name. Anyway, George W., when he got to be president, he invited me and a buddy of mine, another guy who played with us, to lunch every single year of his White House. Every year, we would go to there. And we'd go down there the first time. He shows me, he says, "You wanna see where Clinton and Lewinsky did it?"

• 13:09Adam Friedland?

I thought it was the Oval Office, no?

• 13:11Speaker 02

  No, it's this little.

• 13:13Adam Friedland?

  I know.

• 13:13Speaker 02

About this big of a, of a, right off the Oval Office. There's this little, I don't know what you would call it, closet, almost.

• 13:23Adam Friedland?

  An annex.

• 13:24Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 13:24Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 13:25Speaker 02

And so, that's, he was proud to show me that. And he also showed me the gun, Saddam Hussein's gun.

• 13:34Adam Friedland?

  Oh, no, never mind.

• 13:36Speaker 02

  Pistol.

• 13:36Adam Friedland?

  Not the gun, Cheney.

• 13:38Speaker 02

Not that gun. But anyhow, so he would say one time, I mean, he was pretty funny. He said, "You know, I can't run anymore. And I'm on a treadmill, and I'm flipping through the channels." And he says, "How do you do that thing that you do every day with a straight face?" And I said, "Well, Mr. President, think about all the things you have to do every single day with a straight face." And he says, "Yeah, gotcha." Yeah, that was it.

• 14:06Adam Friedland?

Yeah, so he connected with that.

• 14:09Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 14:10Adam Friedland?

Yeah, yeah. Yeah, it must be hard sometimes not to laugh at things if you're the president. Yeah. If you're like at a state dinner with like a pretty funny country, you know? You have to like take it seriously and stuff, yeah.

• 14:22Speaker 02

We went to a state dinner for his father once, my wife and I.

• 14:26Adam Friedland?

  For H.W.?

• 14:27Speaker 02

  H.W.

• 14:28Adam Friedland?

  What state dinner?

• 14:29Speaker 02

It was for, believe it or not, I think it was for Shimon Peres, maybe? It was maybe Israeli guy?

• 14:37Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 14:37Speaker 02

  I can't remember.

• 14:38Adam Friedland?

Do they serve American food at the state? Okay.

• 14:41Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 14:41Adam Friedland?

Yeah. They don't like give a, put a falafel out or something?

• 14:45Speaker 02

But Connie, my wife Connie, she was sitting next to H.W. And I was kinda like in the, I was like in the grandstand with Rumsfeld or one of those guys, I can't remember.

• 14:55Adam Friedland?

  Oh, yeah.

• 14:56Speaker 02

  And.

• 14:57Adam Friedland?

  Was Rummy funny?

• 14:59Speaker 02

  He was okay.

• 15:00Adam Friedland?

He used to get pissed at the media.

• 15:01Speaker 02

I'll tell you who was never funny was Cheney.

• 15:03Adam Friedland?

  Cheney?

• 15:04Speaker 02

  Never.

• 15:05Adam Friedland?

It was funny that one, not nothing.

• 15:09Speaker 02

  What, you mean?

• 15:10Adam Friedland?

  Caleb looks disappointed.

• 15:11Speaker 02

What, you mean the bird hunt?

• 15:13Adam Friedland?

  Did he say sorry?

• 15:17Adam Friedland?

Yeah, what was Cheney like? Was he scary?

• 15:21Speaker 02

No, he was just, he was, he was just 100% serious all the time.

• 15:28Adam Friedland?

  Palpatine kind of stuff.

• 15:29Speaker 02

  His wife was nice.

• 15:31Adam Friedland?

Oh, Cheney's wife. You never hear about her.

• 15:33Speaker 02

  Yeah, she was great.

• 15:34Adam Friedland?

  What was her name?

• 15:35Speaker 02

  Lynn.

• 15:35Adam Friedland?

  Lynn, yeah.

• 15:36Speaker 02

  She was great.

• 15:37Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 15:38Speaker 02

See, because, see, I knew them back when he was a congressman from Wyoming and I was doing a show in Washington for a local, for a local station. And so I, I knew, I used to have Lynn on all the time and he wasn't worth it.

• 15:52Adam Friedland?

You would interview the Wyoming congressman's wife?

• 15:55Speaker 02

  Sure.

• 15:56Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, about what?

• 15:57Speaker 02

Because she was doing something, I can't remember what or whatever, but she was, she was a live wire. I liked her a lot. And so, I mean...

• 16:10Adam Friedland?

Yeah. You remember during Iraq, Rummy would get so pissed at the press pool?

• 16:14Speaker 02

  Oh, sure.

• 16:15Adam Friedland?

He'd be like, "Ah, shut up."

• 16:17Speaker 02

  Another former congressman.

• 16:18Adam Friedland?

Yeah, yeah. That whole crew, that was like the post Nixon kind of Republican party.

• 16:26Speaker 02

Yeah, but you know who the star of that whole group was, was Condoleezza.

• 16:31Adam Friedland?

  Was she?

• 16:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 16:32Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 16:32Speaker 02

  She was great.

• 16:34Adam Friedland?

What was her vibe like? She was...

• 16:36Speaker 02

  She was, oh, friendly.

• 16:37Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 16:38Speaker 02

Very accommodating, would talk to, and she would talk to the press.

• 16:43Adam Friedland?

Yeah. I, I associate that, that era completely differently with my, I was an adolescent and I was very against Iraq.

• 16:53Speaker 02

  I can understand that.

• 16:54Adam Friedland?

I was like, it made no sense.

• 16:55Speaker 02

I was, you know, I ended up being against it too, as soon as I found out there were no WMEs.

• 17:01Adam Friedland?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I feel bad for...

• 17:03Speaker 02

  WMDs.

• 17:04Adam Friedland?

  MDs, yeah, yeah.

• 17:05Speaker 02

  WMDs.

• 17:06Adam Friedland?

Yeah, yeah. Well, it's all, yeah. I feel bad for, for old, for old Colin Powell. They were like...

• 17:13Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 17:14Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 17:15Speaker 02

  He was another fine fellow.

• 17:16Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, was he?

• 17:17Speaker 02

  Yeah, great.

• 17:18Adam Friedland?

So, were you close just with that crew or you knew everyone?

• 17:23Speaker 02

  Did I know anybody else?

• 17:25Adam Friedland?

How'd you link up with the Bushes?

• 17:28Speaker 02

Because of George W., because we played golf.

• 17:30Adam Friedland?

  Oh, because of golf?

• 17:31Speaker 02

Yeah, all about golf. And I tell you, it was interesting because when his father was the vice president for Reagan, I would go to cover the conventions.

• 17:42Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 17:42Speaker 02

And I knew his mother, and his mother knew that I was friendly with George. And one time I'm going and there was a convention and Barbara was sitting in the front row and I was on the floor, I guess, trying to get stories or whatever. And she goes, "Come over here."

• 18:01Adam Friedland?

  Babs, wow.

• 18:03Speaker 02

She says, "Maury, come over here." And I said, "Yes." She says, "Can you convince George to stop using that smoking tobacco?"

• 18:14Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 18:14Speaker 02

I said, "Mrs. Bush, you've got a much better chance of getting him to stop than I do. I can't get your son to stop that." But I'll tell you what I did do.

• 18:25Adam Friedland?

  It wasn't tobacco, probably, right?

• 18:27Speaker 02

  No, it was.

• 18:28Adam Friedland?

  Oh, never mind.

• 18:31Speaker 02

  But I'll tell you what.

• 18:31Adam Friedland?

Now, back in his Houston days.

• 18:33Speaker 02

I give this guy credit. When I first met him, you know, we used to like to drink.

• 18:38Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 18:38Speaker 02

And one year he came and he said...

• 18:41Adam Friedland?

  He stopped.

• 18:42Speaker 02

  Stopped.

• 18:42Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 18:43Speaker 02

  Cold turkey.

• 18:43Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 18:44Speaker 02

He didn't want to embarrass his father, and he stopped.

• 18:47Adam Friedland?

  Uh huh, yeah.

• 18:47Speaker 02

  And I was very impressed.

• 18:49Adam Friedland?

Jeb was supposed to be the heir apparent, right?

• 18:52Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 18:52Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 18:53Speaker 02

Connie knew Jeb more than I did.

• 18:55Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 18:56Speaker 02

Yeah, Connie was friendly with Jeb.

• 18:57Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 18:58Speaker 02

I didn't know Jeb much. I know Marvin, his younger brother, he's in Washington.

• 19:02Adam Friedland?

Who's Marvin Bush? What does he do?

• 19:04Speaker 02

  That's a no.

• 19:05Adam Friedland?

  He's a soul singer.

• 19:06Speaker 02

  He was an investment guy.

• 19:08Adam Friedland?

  Oh, yeah, really?

• 19:09Speaker 02

  Never into politics.

• 19:11Adam Friedland?

How many boys was it? Just three?

• 19:13Speaker 02

  No, Neil.

• 19:14Adam Friedland?

Neil Bush? How many did they got?

• 19:16Speaker 02

  Four boys.

• 19:17Adam Friedland?

  What's Neil's vibe?

• 19:19Speaker 02

  Huh?

• 19:19Adam Friedland?

  What does he do?

• 19:20Speaker 02

Neil was in Colorado for a long time. He got into some kind of problems.

• 19:25Adam Friedland?

Oh, he was the bad brother, yeah. There's always one, there's always a naughty brother. There's like Roger Clinton.

• 19:31Speaker 02

  I don't have a brother. I don't have a naughty...

• 19:33Adam Friedland?

  I'm talking presents, yeah, yeah.

• 19:35Speaker 02

  Roger, yeah, Roger was fun.

• 19:37Adam Friedland?

  Jimmy Carter's brother.

• 19:38Speaker 02

I knew Roger. Yeah, Billy? No, that was his son.

• 19:43Adam Friedland?

Was Billy Carter, he was the alcoholic? I thought that was the brother. And then, of course, Fred Trump Jr. Fred Jr. was also a drunkard. I don't know why I said drunkard.

• 19:56Speaker 02

  Alcoholic.

• 19:56Adam Friedland?

Yeah. Have you met our president before?

• 20:00Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 20:01Adam Friedland?

  How many, just around?

• 20:02Speaker 02

Haven't seen him in a long time.

• 20:04Adam Friedland?

What's he like as a guy? He's Trump? He's like that?

• 20:07Speaker 02

I knew him, I almost want to say it was a different life.

• 20:11Adam Friedland?

  Yeah. As like a playboy.

• 20:14Speaker 02

First of all, way, way back, in like the mid to late 80s, alright? And I'm doing this show called A Current Affair, which is this tabloid-y, really tabloid journalism.

• 20:25Adam Friedland?

  Yes.

• 20:26Speaker 02

Big time, out front show. And it was the time when he was cheating on Ivana with Marla Maples. And they were, it was New York Post, New York Daily News. Covers every single day. And Ivana had Liz Smith in the Daily News, and she was taking her side. And Donald had Cindy Adams at the Post, he was taking hers, she was taking his side. And it was back and forth. And I'm doing A Current Affair. I mean, manna from heaven.

• 20:56Adam Friedland?

  It was a big story.

• 20:58Speaker 02

  This is the best.

• 20:58Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 20:59Speaker 02

So we, I mean, we played in golf tournaments together.

• 21:05Speaker 02

I, I mean, he, Donald was always, you know, always had this huge ego, this and that. So, I mean, and yet, I never thought it would go that far.

• 21:20Adam Friedland?

It's kind of the most amazing thing we've ever seen, right?

• 21:23Speaker 02

Who would have ever thought, right?

• 21:25Adam Friedland?

I, I remember being, I was like, from The Apprentice, he's the president now?

• 21:30Speaker 02

  Right.

• 21:30Adam Friedland?

  That night was shocking, yeah.

• 21:32Speaker 02

So, one time at A Current Affair, this is how, this is how much he thought of himself.

• 21:41Speaker 02

Gorbachev is in the country and Trump is trying to get a meeting with Gorbachev at Trump Tower. And Gorbachev is coming to New York and at the last minute, he has to cancel. And we at a current affair, we said, okay, we're gonna play this trick on Donald. So we hired a Gorbachev look-alike.

• 22:04Adam Friedland?

  No.

• 22:04Speaker 02

Yeah. Hired this Gorbachev look-alike and we had this-

• 22:08Adam Friedland?

You put some ketchup on his head or something?

• 22:09Speaker 02

No, yeah, yeah. It was perfect. You had the whole deal.

• 22:12Adam Friedland?

Yeah, yeah. Italy, it looked like Italy, right?

• 22:14Speaker 02

  Italy or Africa.

• 22:16Adam Friedland?

It looked like Italy, I think, yeah.

• 22:19Speaker 02

So we had this Gorbachev look-alike and our great Australian reporter Gordon Elliot is with him in a limousine with some girls. And we're driving by Trump Tower. And we said at the last minute, we called Trump's office, Gorbachev is, he'll be able to stop by Trump Tower to say hello to you if that's what you want. And, and Trump comes down the elevator out of Trump Tower with a necktie to give to him to Gorbachev. He gets there, he looks at the door and he realizes the girls are there. And finally Gordon Elliot says, I think he worked it out. Finally figured out that this was a-

• 23:04Adam Friedland?

  Was this for the show?

• 23:06Speaker 02

Oh, yeah. It was a classic segment.

• 23:08Adam Friedland?

But he, but he didn't buy it. He was clever. Cause I remember, he was on, he was the only guy that walked away from Alley G-

• 23:16Speaker 02

But the point is to get him down there. To get him down there.

• 23:20Adam Friedland?

Yeah, yeah. And it was probably from the Trump-

• 23:22Speaker 02

He'd go anywhere to see Gorbachev.

• 23:24Adam Friedland?

Of course. I mean, it's a, but he probably wanted to build some gold crap in Russia. And they would have loved it, too. They love gold crap.

• 23:33Speaker 02

Oh, God. Have you, that's to me, desecration, what he did to the Oval Office. Just desecration.

• 23:39Adam Friedland?

  The East Wing or something?

• 23:40Speaker 02

  No, the Oval Office itself.

• 23:42Adam Friedland?

Oh, he closed down the Lewinsky part?

• 23:45Speaker 02

No, it's the gold, the gold.

• 23:46Adam Friedland?

Oh, okay. I thought you were talking about the Lewinsky part, yeah.

• 23:49Speaker 02

  Oh, my golly.

• 23:49Adam Friedland?

Well, Clinton, I guess, desecrated a little bit, too.

• 23:52Speaker 02

Yeah, but not that way. I'll tell you. I've, I've been in that office from Kennedy-

• 23:59Speaker 02

  Through Bush.

• 24:01Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 24:02Speaker 02

Each president maybe changed the rug.

• 24:06Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 24:07Speaker 02

Maybe they put a different picture up.

• 24:09Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 24:09Speaker 02

Of one of their favorites. Maybe a sculpture or something. Never like this.

• 24:15Adam Friedland?

The plaques are pretty funny. Yeah. The plaques are pretty funny.

• 24:20Speaker 02

Yeah, but everything is gold all over the place.

• 24:22Adam Friedland?

Yeah, yeah. I mean, that's what you get. That's what we get for electing Trump twice. Of course, he's gonna put some gold crap up. That's, I don't, I, I, I've said this before, but my sister called me really mad about the east wing of the White House.

• 24:38Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 24:39Adam Friedland?

And I'm like, the, I don't know, they're like concentration camps right now in America. Like, like the detention centers, like, yeah. Like, maybe a little bit, there's worse stuff happening right now. I don't know why I even said that, but yeah.

• 24:53Speaker 02

  In other words, you know.

• 24:55Adam Friedland?

People are so infuriated by everything right now. And, and I think that.

• 25:00Speaker 02

  The Trump Kennedy Center.

• 25:03Adam Friedland?

Did he change it to his name or both?

• 25:05Speaker 02

  No.

• 25:05Adam Friedland?

  Trump and Kennedy.

• 25:06Speaker 02

It's called the Trump Kennedy Center.

• 25:08Adam Friedland?

  Oh, that's nice.

• 25:11Adam Friedland?

If I was the president, I'd.

• 25:12Speaker 02

This is, this is, this is what I wanna know. Are there Democratic presidential candidates making a list of all the things that they've, that they've got to throw out?

• 25:26Adam Friedland?

They're probably gonna, forget a couple. That's, that's the thing. He's like, I gotta put, I gotta put enough stuff, I gotta put enough gold crap for me to forget.

• 25:35Speaker 02

I saw the other day, he's trying to bargain with Schumer to get the, get his name on Penn Station when they redo it.

• 25:40Adam Friedland?

Uh huh. I can assure you that Schumer will lose that bargain somehow.

• 25:45Speaker 02

  Well.

• 25:46Adam Friedland?

  Just as, he's, he seems.

• 25:48Speaker 02

I mean, look, all these people are of my generation. We have no business running the country.

• 25:53Adam Friedland?

Yeah, I was, I was telling you on the phone, when I first met Zora, the mayor, it dawned on me, I was like, this is the first time someone from my generation is like, in the game right now. It felt like that.

• 26:06Speaker 02

I don't understand why we can't give it up. Meaning my generation.

• 26:11Adam Friedland?

  You guys are doing good.

• 26:12Speaker 02

  Yeah, but.

• 26:13Adam Friedland?

  There are enough defense stocks.

• 26:15Speaker 02

In Congress, there's no money in Congress.

• 26:18Adam Friedland?

  We can't give it up.

• 26:19Speaker 02

There's power, but there's no money.

• 26:21Adam Friedland?

Go back to 2016. Jeb was supposed to be the heir apparent to that dynasty. I think probably was the frontrunner, right?

• 26:29Speaker 02

I thought so. It's right before Trump started to make a move. Even after he came down the escalator, Jeb was probably still in front of him.

• 26:39Adam Friedland?

Well, that, to me, and maybe you could know better, but that, to me, wasn't a real thing. I think that he was negotiating with Jeff Zucker for the new season of Apprentice. And I think that he was like, well, fuck you, I'll run for president and I'll be even bigger. And you'll have to pay.

• 26:56Speaker 02

If you took a look at the ratings.

• 26:58Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 26:59Speaker 02

  His ratings had gone down.

• 27:01Adam Friedland?

He built it big, though. He built that show into like the number two rated show behind the Super Bowl.

• 27:06Speaker 02

Burnett was the genius behind the show.

• 27:09Adam Friedland?

Yeah, and he was a good promoter, too, Trump.

• 27:11Speaker 02

  Best.

• 27:12Adam Friedland?

  He would go and stir.

• 27:13Speaker 02

  Oh, he's the best.

• 27:14Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 27:15Speaker 02

  I mean.

• 27:17Adam Friedland?

He's so good that this war, I can't, I was a huge fan of what's going on in Iran, of course.

• 27:23Speaker 02

  You're a fan?

• 27:24Adam Friedland?

Well, this man just promoted it, so, yeah. No, I mean, what I'm saying is like, obviously, we now know that everyone was there at the escalator. Everyone was being paid, right?

• 27:37Speaker 02

  Oh, sure.

• 27:37Adam Friedland?

Yeah, they weren't actual Trump fans. And it seemed like it was, the pictures of him on election night looked like, oh, fuck. Now I have to be the president, you know?

• 27:48Speaker 02

Well, I think he thought he was gonna lose three times.

• 27:56Speaker 02

I really do. I think he was gonna lose three times.

• 27:58Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 28:00Speaker 02

  But that's just me.

• 28:01Adam Friedland?

What's your assessment of him as a guy, from your couple of times you've met him?

• 28:06Speaker 02

You just had to take everything he said, you just had to just

• 28:10Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 28:11Speaker 02

Kind of diminish it a certain way.

• 28:13Adam Friedland?

  He's a promoter.

• 28:14Speaker 02

Yeah, I mean. He's just one of the great self-promoters of all time.

• 28:19Adam Friedland?

But in a golf, like foursome, is he behaving like he is on television? Is that just the guy he is? Or is that what he?

• 28:30Speaker 02

He's a little more serious on the golf course.

• 28:31Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 28:33Speaker 02

He's, yeah, he's all about into his golf.

• 28:36Adam Friedland?

Yeah, or not even golf necessarily, it's just in his life without cameras.

• 28:41Speaker 02

I'll tell you something, I've played with him once. Maybe two or three, I mean, maybe I've played five or six rounds with him.

• 28:49Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 28:51Speaker 02

  Never mentioned politics, ever.

• 28:53Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 28:53Speaker 02

  Never.

• 28:55Adam Friedland?

  That's, I mean, it's rude.

• 28:58Speaker 02

But this was before he was a politician.

• 29:01Adam Friedland?

Trump has good manners, we all know that about him, you don't mention politics or religion.

• 29:05Speaker 02

  Oh, gosh.

• 29:07Adam Friedland?

So you've really seen it all, you were a newsman for a long time.

• 29:10Speaker 02

  Long time.

• 29:11Adam Friedland?

And your father, of course, was the head of the sports.

• 29:13Speaker 02

He was a sports columnist, writer for the Washington Post for 75 years.

• 29:18Adam Friedland?

Yeah, and he broke, of course, Watergate, it was in the sports page, if I remember. Yes, it was, they, someone from the Washington Senators hit a ball

• 29:29Adam Friedland?

  into the Watergate Hotel, right?

• 29:30Speaker 02

No, the newspaper broke Watergate, not my father. Woodburn Bernstein broke Watergate.

• 29:36Adam Friedland?

I look into it, I'll take you in good faith, sir.

• 29:40Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 29:42Adam Friedland?

Of course, my association with you, and I told you this when we first spoke, is being homesick from school, right?

• 29:51Speaker 02

  Me and Springer, I think.

• 29:53Adam Friedland?

Well, it starts, Price is Right was the first one.

• 29:56Speaker 02

  Oh, Price is Right, sure.

• 29:57Adam Friedland?

Because your parents are like at work.

• 29:58Speaker 02

  Bob Barker.

• 29:59Adam Friedland?

  Bob Barker, of course.

• 30:00Speaker 02

  Who knew about him?

• 30:01Adam Friedland?

Who knew about what? Oh, he was like a...

• 30:06Speaker 02

Yeah, a little dirty old man or something like that.

• 30:08Adam Friedland?

Oh. Are they all? You're the only gentleman in show business?

• 30:14Speaker 02

  No.

• 30:14Adam Friedland?

  From what I understand.

• 30:15Speaker 02

  No, that's not true.

• 30:18Adam Friedland?

You watch Price is Right, then you get Springer, Maury, and then the end of the day, and it's funny, the end of the being homesick from school lineup.

• 30:27Speaker 02

  Which was?

• 30:28Adam Friedland?

Is around the horn and then PTI.

• 30:30Speaker 02

  Ah.

• 30:31Adam Friedland?

Right. And of course, I mentioned that to you.

• 30:33Speaker 02

  Cornheiser you love.

• 30:34Adam Friedland?

And your father hired Cornheiser. Hired Cornheiser.

• 30:38Speaker 02

In fact, the sports editor hired him. He wanted my father's opinion of him. They hire Cornheiser. And Cornheiser's kind of like the first guy they hired at The Post in the sports department to be kind of humorous.

• 30:50Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 30:50Speaker 02

All right? So he writes his first few columns. My father goes to the sports editor, George Solomon, and says, "I don't think he's funny."

• 31:00Speaker 02

And George says, "Surely you don't think..." My father's name was Shirley. "Surely you don't really..." "No, I don't think he's funny." So then, my father, God love him, and I give him a lot of credit, about three weeks later, goes into Solomon's office and says, "George, I was wrong. He's very funny."

• 31:16Adam Friedland?

He's one of the funniest guys. Yeah, I love him. Are you calling him?

• 31:20Speaker 02

I'm gonna try. Let me see what this story is.

• 31:23Adam Friedland?

  Cornheiser?

• 31:25Speaker 02

Let me see if I can get him.

• 31:26Adam Friedland?

I asked Pablo to do this, too.

• 31:28Speaker 02

  And he wouldn't do it?

• 31:29Adam Friedland?

He did, but he didn't pick up. And I left him for...

• 31:31Speaker 02

  He didn't pick up?

• 31:32Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, but maybe for...

• 31:34Speaker 02

He's gonna be pissed off because he wants everything, you know.

• 31:37Adam Friedland?

  I know.

• 31:38Speaker 02

  He's the Larry David of...

• 31:39Adam Friedland?

  I know.

• 31:40Speaker 02

He wants everything. He has to have everything laid out.

• 31:43Adam Friedland?

  I won't blow it. I won't blow it.

• 31:45Speaker 02

  Huh?

• 31:45Adam Friedland?

  I won't blow it.

• 31:46Speaker 02

But the point is, will he even consent to talking to you?

• 31:49Adam Friedland?

  You're huge.

• 31:51Speaker 02

  Oh, God.

• 31:52Adam Friedland?

  If what you say goes.

• 31:53Speaker 02

  Oh, gosh.

• 31:54Adam Friedland?

  Put it on speaker.

• 31:59Speaker 02

Oh, I hope he's not there.

• 32:02Adam Friedland?

I hope he's there. We'll call Bush after that. Can we call Bush then?

• 32:08Speaker 03

  Hello?

• 32:09Speaker 02

  Tony, Maury.

• 32:11Adam Friedland?

  George?

• 32:12Speaker 03

  I'm Maury.

• 32:13Speaker 02

  How are you?

• 32:15Speaker 03

I'm fine and I'm doing better on chip shots because of you.

• 32:19Speaker 02

Oh, good. Your chipping is much better. Isn't that great? Now, here's the thing, Tony. I know I hate to do this because I'm sitting here with a guy that Pablo loves the best, and he tried to get you to talk to him. His name is Adam Friedland.

• 32:33Adam Friedland?

  I'm nervous.

• 32:33Speaker 02

  He's a big time po—

• 32:34Speaker 03

  I don't talk to people.

• 32:36Speaker 02

Okay. All right. You won't talk— you don't want to talk to him?

• 32:40Speaker 03

Put him on. Is he there?

• 32:41Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, he's right here. Hold on.

• 32:42Adam Friedland?

  Tony, Tony.

• 32:43Speaker 03

  Put him on.

• 32:43Adam Friedland?

Tony, I left you a voicemail with Pablo. I don't know if you know how to get the voicemails on the— these phones?

• 32:50Speaker 03

  No, I don't know how.

• 32:52Adam Friedland?

  I'm a massive—

• 32:53Speaker 03

Were you the person who compared me to—

• 32:57Adam Friedland?

Adolf Hitler? Oh, no, Larry David. Larry David, yes, yeah.

• 33:01Speaker 03

Okay. That was so odd because I sort of know Larry David. I mean—

• 33:05Adam Friedland?

Can you loop him in? Let's get him on the phone? Yeah, go ahead. No, sorry.

• 33:11Speaker 03

Larry David went to this camp, Camp Tioga, for one year. And I went there the next year and met the woman who then became my wife. And so, everybody had Larry David's stories because he was like— they were more 17 or 18. And then I met Larry a couple of times, and I think he thought I was a jerk.

• 33:31Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 33:32Speaker 03

Yeah, I mean, I think that was my sense of it. His best friend in high school was a very good friend of mine in college.

• 33:39Adam Friedland?

  Bernie Madoff, of course.

• 33:41Speaker 02

  No.

• 33:42Speaker 03

No, no, no, no. Did he go to that school, Cheeseday High School?

• 33:45Adam Friedland?

  Oh, I—

• 33:46Speaker 03

No, my friend Jay Bloomfield. My friend Jay Bloomfield was a very good friend of Larry David's. Anyway, I don't talk to people because I will say something, it'll be the end of my career. I just don't do it.

• 33:55Adam Friedland?

No, of course, and I'm looking forward to you coming on the show.

• 33:59Speaker 03

I don't talk to Pablo, do you understand? I love Pablo. I won't talk to him or Levitard. I won't talk to him.

• 34:04Adam Friedland?

Well, thank you. I'll get you in a cell—

• 34:07Speaker 02

  You're gonna ruin my relationship.

• 34:08Adam Friedland?

I'm gonna get you in a cell tomorrow, maybe. What are you—

• 34:11Speaker 02

Tony, Tony, I'm more interested in your chipping.

• 34:15Speaker 03

Yes, well, I got it in the back of my— you told me you put the ball way back in the back of my stance.

• 34:20Speaker 02

  Correct.

• 34:20Speaker 03

The hardest thing for me— Is getting the, is getting the club up high enough so that when it makes contact, it actually gets under the ball and I don't just drill the ball.

• 34:31Speaker 02

  Right.

• 34:31Speaker 03

But I'm trying, but I, I have the posture of it correct and I, you know, sometimes, sometimes it works. I, you know, I'm, I met a guy yesterday playing golf, David somebody or other with a long name that began with an A who said to me, "So I think you were a friend of my former law partner, David Povich."

• 34:50Speaker 02

  Oh, wow.

• 34:51Speaker 03

I said, I said, "I lived three blocks away at some point and he talks with great fondness about your brother and then I told stories about your dad."

• 34:59Speaker 02

  Right. Tony?

• 35:02Adam Friedland?

Tony, what do you think, what do you think, you think LeBron could pull it off in the first round?

• 35:07Speaker 02

  No, stop, stop talking.

• 35:08Adam Friedland?

  Tony, what do you think?

• 35:09Speaker 03

Those with the two guys out, two guys who are 45 points.

• 35:13Adam Friedland?

What, it would be like a, kind of a last dance. It'd be amazing, wouldn't it?

• 35:17Speaker 02

Yeah, it'd be a last dance.

• 35:19Speaker 03

But I don't think it's a last chance. He's playing at 41, like 85% of the league wish they could play out at 26.

• 35:26Adam Friedland?

Yeah. I don't understand. He just goes, he goes to Switzerland and then he...

• 35:31Speaker 02

Tony, I'm coming down there in a week or two. We'll go play.

• 35:35Adam Friedland?

Yeah, can't wait. I'll be there.

• 35:36Speaker 02

  Goodbye.

• 35:37Adam Friedland?

  Tony, I'll be there.

• 35:38Speaker 03

  Bye, bye.

• 35:39Adam Friedland?

  Bye.

• 35:41Adam Friedland?

That was the best moment of my entire life. It really makes up for your association with the war in Iraq, Maury. It really makes up with your...

• 35:49Speaker 02

  I'm glad.

• 35:49Adam Friedland?

  Planning and execution.

• 35:51Speaker 02

The fact that I'm a friend of George Bush's and now the fact that you talked to Tony Kornheiser on the phone.

• 35:56Adam Friedland?

Can we call Bush? I'll be nice. I'll be respectful. I have a lot of respect for the office.

• 36:00Speaker 02

No, I haven't talked to him in years.

• 36:02Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 36:02Speaker 02

  No.

• 36:03Adam Friedland?

What happened? You got a falling out with Bush?

• 36:04Speaker 02

  No, I did not.

• 36:05Adam Friedland?

This is, this is the exclusive.

• 36:06Speaker 02

  No, he's busy, I'm busy.

• 36:07Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 36:08Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 36:08Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 36:10Speaker 02

  Did you like that?

• 36:11Adam Friedland?

It was so cool. My heart is racing. I, honestly, I mean...

• 36:15Speaker 02

But by the way, you are so right on about Larry David.

• 36:19Adam Friedland?

  He is.

• 36:19Speaker 02

He's the sports version of Larry David.

• 36:21Adam Friedland?

  They're just schmazles.

• 36:22Speaker 02

I mean, you have no idea what he has to do to get on an airplane. I mean, he has to plan a week ahead.

• 36:32Adam Friedland?

I'll, I'll ask Pablo if we could put this in the episode. Pablo said he took the train up to go to Pablo's wedding, took the Acela back.

• 36:41Speaker 02

  Right.

• 36:41Adam Friedland?

He was the main, the star of the wedding. Everyone was excited. I said, "How bad was the present?" He said, he didn't give me one.

• 36:50Speaker 02

  You don't get presents.

• 36:51Adam Friedland?

  Of course, of course.

• 36:53Speaker 02

His showing up, his presence is the present.

• 36:55Adam Friedland?

His presence is a present, yeah.

• 36:59Speaker 02

How to how, why did you get so friendly with Pablo?

• 37:03Adam Friedland?

Uh, I met him at a game. Uh, I went to see Luca's first game against the Nets with the Lakers.

• 37:12Speaker 02

Oh, you were at the Barclay Center.

• 37:14Adam Friedland?

At the Barclay Center. I live by there.

• 37:16Speaker 02

I didn't know you lived in Brooklyn.

• 37:18Adam Friedland?

Uh, yeah, I live in Fork Green in Brooklyn. My address is [BLEEP] Avenue, apartment [BLEEP].

• 37:27Speaker 02

You're, you're really crazy. You are.

• 37:30Adam Friedland?

Listen, I'm one of the craziest guys in the biz.

• 37:32Speaker 02

Have you been to my daughter's restaurant?

• 37:34Adam Friedland?

  Yes, no. What restaurant?

• 37:36Speaker 02

  In Red Hook?

• 37:38Adam Friedland?

  Which one? Red Hook Tavern?

• 37:40Speaker 02

  Red Hook Lobster Pound?

• 37:41Adam Friedland?

  That's your daughter's?

• 37:42Speaker 02

  My daughter.

• 37:43Adam Friedland?

Yes, I have. Let's give it up for Red. Let's give it up. My hometown barbecue, right next to it.

• 37:48Speaker 02

  Is that right?

• 37:48Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 37:49Speaker 02

But I'm telling you, she and her husband Ralph, my daughter Susan and Ralph, said, "There are no good lobsters in Brooklyn." They went to Maine and used to truck down the lobsters every week.

• 38:00Adam Friedland?

Tell me about this Ralph. What's it?

• 38:02Speaker 02

  Ralph Gorham is the best.

• 38:03Adam Friedland?

  Oh, yeah.

• 38:04Speaker 02

  Southie, baby. Southie.

• 38:05Adam Friedland?

You let one of those on your?

• 38:07Speaker 02

  Absolutely.

• 38:08Adam Friedland?

  That's your, that's your angel.

• 38:10Speaker 02

My, my southern law from Southie.

• 38:12Adam Friedland?

Wait, what? He's from the, uh, he's from, uh, The Departed? This gentleman? He's Whitey Ford and you're?

• 38:20Speaker 02

Those streets, those streets, baby. Volker's streets.

• 38:23Adam Friedland?

It's probably now, it's like luxury apartments at this point, if I had to guess.

• 38:27Speaker 02

My Southie son-in-law, I love him. He's coming to dinner tonight.

• 38:31Adam Friedland?

Is he? Where are we going?

• 38:33Speaker 02

  My house.

• 38:34Adam Friedland?

  Okay. What are you making?

• 38:36Speaker 02

Tonight, we're having prime rib, baby.

• 38:38Adam Friedland?

  Prime rib? You're making? No.

• 38:39Speaker 02

  No.

• 38:39Adam Friedland?

You have a, you have a guy with a chef's hat carving for you?

• 38:44Adam Friedland?

I'm getting married, my girlfriend won't-

• 38:46Speaker 02

  Are you getting married?

• 38:47Adam Friedland?

Yeah, in September, she won't let me do prime rib carving stations.

• 38:50Speaker 02

  Why not?

• 38:51Adam Friedland?

I can't do anything, because any idea of mine is bad. I don't even want to get started.

• 38:55Speaker 02

Why are you getting married if every idea is bad?

• 38:58Adam Friedland?

Oh, that is amazing. I can't believe her. What an idiot. She's gonna be my friend forever? I can't believe it.

• 39:07Speaker 02

  Why are you doing this?

• 39:08Adam Friedland?

  It's so nice of her.

• 39:08Speaker 02

  Why are you doing this?

• 39:09Adam Friedland?

I, because I love her. She doesn't realize that she's gonna wake up one day and look at me.

• 39:16Speaker 02

I'll say the same thing that my mother said to me when I used to bring girls back to the house.

• 39:20Adam Friedland?

  Oh.

• 39:20Speaker 02

  You know?

• 39:21Adam Friedland?

  What'd she say?

• 39:21Speaker 02

And I'd say, you know, Mom, what do you think of this? She said, what do you think of this young lady? And my mother would say, "I don't understand anybody who would go out with you."

• 39:32Adam Friedland?

It's the same thing, yeah. I feel that way every time.

• 39:34Speaker 02

  So, there you go.

• 39:34Adam Friedland?

I've never, I've never been intimate with a woman and not had in the back of my mind, what is wrong with her? Her father, what is the, can you imagine, what is she doing to her family? What is this? She's an idiot.

• 39:50Speaker 02

How long have you gone with her?

• 39:52Adam Friedland?

Uh, six and a half years since, like, 2020, January 2020.

• 40:00Speaker 02

We dated off and on for like seven.

• 40:02Adam Friedland?

Yeah, yeah. Well, you guys were professionals at the time and stuff? Yeah.

• 40:07Speaker 02

She was a star, I was Mr. Chung. Are you kidding me?

• 40:10Adam Friedland?

Oh, I know. Why didn't you take her name ever? Do you think it would have been cultural appropriation?

• 40:15Speaker 02

Everybody in New York, everybody on the Upper West Side thinks of me as Mr. Chung.

• 40:19Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 40:20Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 40:20Adam Friedland?

  That's kinda cool.

• 40:21Speaker 02

  It's alright.

• 40:22Adam Friedland?

If someone gave me a different ethnic last name, I would wear it with pride. I wanna take her last name, it's Italian. And I can't say it on the show.

• 40:30Speaker 02

  Yeah, that's right.

• 40:32Adam Friedland?

I think people would, Caleb, would you respect me?

• 40:34Speaker 02

  Do you speak Italian?

• 40:35Adam Friedland?

  Uh, no, of course not.

• 40:38Speaker 02

  You gonna try?

• 40:40Adam Friedland?

No, I have better things to do with my life.

• 40:42Speaker 02

I've always, I've always wanted to speak Italian and couldn't speak a word.

• 40:46Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 40:47Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 40:47Adam Friedland?

  Do you speak any languages?

• 40:49Speaker 02

  Yeah, barely English.

• 40:51Adam Friedland?

Really? Listen, you're being self-deprecating, I'm being self-deprecating. This is probably for the, for my dad.

• 40:59Speaker 02

  No, you're not self, you're not self-deprecating.

• 41:01Adam Friedland?

  I hate.

• 41:02Speaker 02

  You're miserable.

• 41:03Adam Friedland?

  I'm not miserable, no, no.

• 41:05Speaker 02

  You sound miserable.

• 41:06Adam Friedland?

I do it to disarm a guest. I think I'm the greatest guy in the world. It's my trick.

• 41:13Adam Friedland?

You were in hard news before you were a talk show host.

• 41:18Speaker 02

  A long time.

• 41:18Adam Friedland?

  For a long time.

• 41:19Speaker 02

In fact, I used to, in the seventies. See, I know you went to Israel for a year, right?

• 41:25Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 41:26Speaker 02

  And you got upset.

• 41:28Adam Friedland?

Cut that, cut that. Okay, yeah, continue.

• 41:30Speaker 02

  Really?

• 41:31Adam Friedland?

  No, I'm just kidding. I, I, yeah.

• 41:34Speaker 02

You worked there for a year.

• 41:36Adam Friedland?

I, I worked on an ambulance and I took, I studied. I took classes for a year before college, yeah.

• 41:41Speaker 02

So, I haven't been there in forty years, but after the seventy-three war.

• 41:48Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, the Yom Kippur War.

• 41:50Speaker 02

Yeah, I went to, right where they hap, right where it's happening right now. Back then, it wasn't Hezbollah, it was the Pielo. And it was Yasser Arafat.

• 42:01Adam Friedland?

  Yes.

• 42:02Speaker 02

  All right?

• 42:02Adam Friedland?

You look like a Ringo Starr a little bit, no?

• 42:04Speaker 02

  Huh? Yeah.

• 42:05Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, they did, yeah.

• 42:06Speaker 02

So, they were in southern Lebanon, just the same way Hezbollah is.

• 42:11Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 42:12Speaker 02

And they were having a war back and forth, just the way they are now. So I went to cover that for about a week or two.

• 42:18Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 42:19Speaker 02

  And it never ends.

• 42:23Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 42:24Speaker 02

  Just never ends.

• 42:26Adam Friedland?

Yeah, it's, uh, it's really fucked up.

• 42:29Speaker 02

And what I don't understand, you know what really pisses me off? That there's a certain, like, the Trumpsters, the MAGAs, think that if you're, if you don't like the Israeli government, you're anti-Semitic.

• 42:47Adam Friedland?

Yeah, well, a lot of people say that, yeah.

• 42:49Speaker 02

That is absolutely shitty and wrong.

• 42:52Adam Friedland?

Yeah, it kind of devalues the term antisemitism, right?

• 42:58Speaker 02

  Absolutely.

• 42:58Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 43:00Speaker 02

But, but more than that, it, it, people don't get it. People, you can be for a country and against their government.

• 43:07Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 43:10Adam Friedland?

  Sure.

• 43:11Speaker 02

And Netanyahu, he's led the Trumpster right down the road.

• 43:16Adam Friedland?

Yeah, it's a real nightmare, isn't it? Yeah, the whole situation. I don't know. Yeah, it's really stressful. Do you think it's changed antisemitism here in the last three years?

• 43:30Speaker 02

Well, first of all, it's changed the definition as to what it is.

• 43:34Adam Friedland?

I feel like a lot of people don't like Jews because they see Judaism associated with brutality, maybe.

• 43:41Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 43:41Adam Friedland?

I'm not saying it's right not to like Jews.

• 43:42Speaker 02

  And that's wrong. That's wrong.

• 43:44Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 43:45Speaker 02

  You blame the government, sure.

• 43:46Adam Friedland?

Yeah. It's kind of tough when you see a Star of David flag and they're doing that, right?

• 43:52Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 43:52Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 43:54Speaker 02

  I mean, it's...

• 43:56Adam Friedland?

  You know what?

• 43:57Speaker 02

I mean, I bleed for both. You know, I bleed for Israel and I bleed for those poor Palestinians.

• 44:08Adam Friedland?

Yeah. You know what the problem is? Is that Israel, they started, they go to the army, you know? Like, it's not our thing. Like, going to war has never been our thing. Hiding, hiding from the war.

• 44:24Speaker 02

  What, Jews?

• 44:25Adam Friedland?

Yeah. They are a thing for 1,800 years. We hide from the war.

• 44:29Speaker 02

  No, no, come on.

• 44:30Adam Friedland?

Yeah, we just stand back there. We're like, is it over yet?

• 44:33Speaker 02

  Come on.

• 44:34Adam Friedland?

Come on, we wrote a, there's a bestselling book about it. Sorry, sorry, Maury, don't be mad at me.

• 44:40Speaker 02

  I'm not mad at you.

• 44:41Adam Friedland?

There's a bestselling book about a Jew hiding from a war. They teach it in all the schools.

• 44:46Speaker 02

Look, you hide from the Holocaust, right?

• 44:49Adam Friedland?

I think we hid for a long time from the war.

• 44:51Speaker 02

But you're going to try to tell me they kind of were meek and cowardly? When you take a look at the Warsaw Ghetto and you take a look at all these other attempts?

• 44:59Adam Friedland?

I agree. What I'm saying is, if I told my mother I was going to Afghanistan when I graduated high school, she would have killed me first, right? We're not, our thing is talk shows and romantic comedies and folk albums. Yeah, and making pictures. And we've done phenomenal at that, right?

• 45:20Speaker 02

  Come on.

• 45:21Adam Friedland?

What? And none of them say thank you. Did they say thank you? No. Did they say thank you? Not once.

• 45:28Speaker 02

You don't think there are any Jews in SEAL Team Six?

• 45:31Adam Friedland?

  Hopefully not.

• 45:32Speaker 02

  Maybe.

• 45:32Adam Friedland?

  Oh, my God.

• 45:33Speaker 02

  I'm sure there are.

• 45:35Adam Friedland?

  I don't think, I bet.

• 45:36Speaker 02

  Absolutely, there are.

• 45:37Adam Friedland?

  Wait, Thomas?

• 45:40Adam Friedland?

Wait, can we, look up if there's a Jew in SEALs.

• 45:44Speaker 02

  I guarantee you there are.

• 45:45Adam Friedland?

I guarantee, I guarantee there are Jews in the SEALs. In the SEALs? Maybe in the intelligence.

• 45:55Speaker 02

Stop, stop being, stop promoting stereotypes.

• 45:59Adam Friedland?

Wait, you went to, when did you graduate high school?

• 46:03Speaker 02

  1957.

• 46:04Adam Friedland?

Okay, you went to, you were a college.

• 46:06Speaker 02

I was going, yeah, but I got kicked out of college.

• 46:10Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 46:10Speaker 02

And I went back and then I.

• 46:12Adam Friedland?

  Why'd you get kicked out?

• 46:14Speaker 02

  I didn't go to class.

• 46:15Adam Friedland?

  What were you doing?

• 46:16Speaker 02

  I was having fun.

• 46:18Adam Friedland?

  Good man.

• 46:19Speaker 02

I went to an all-boys high school.

• 46:21Adam Friedland?

So there are girls that, when you went to.

• 46:23Speaker 02

  There were girls.

• 46:23Adam Friedland?

Yeah, you went to Penn, you went to a good school, yeah. Well, old Trump went there too.

• 46:28Speaker 02

Yeah, I'd like to know how he got in, but that's.

• 46:32Adam Friedland?

Probably from being very good at school.

• 46:33Speaker 02

He didn't start, he didn't start at Penn.

• 46:36Adam Friedland?

I think Benjamin Franklin started it.

• 46:38Speaker 02

Yeah, but Trump didn't start at Penn, he started at Fordham, I think.

• 46:42Adam Friedland?

  Oh, yeah, in the Bronx.

• 46:44Speaker 02

Yeah, and then he transferred. Anyway, that's not the point.

• 46:48Adam Friedland?

  I'm just saying, we're lovers.

• 46:50Speaker 02

No, oh, this is the point, this is the point. I, I got out of school and Kennedy's in, and there's a draft, all right? Now, I'm gonna be drafted.

• 47:00Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 47:01Speaker 02

So I go for my pre-induction physical.

• 47:03Adam Friedland?

  And you're like, hey.

• 47:06Speaker 02

  Go to my pre-induction physical.

• 47:09Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 47:09Speaker 02

Right in 1962, in Washington DC. And I'm scheduled to be drafted. And then, nothing happens in June, nothing happens in July, nothing happens in August. I get married in August and my wife, my then-wife is pregnant in September. And I'm out of the draft and I'm going, if everybody's been drafted, I wonder why wasn't I called? And then I, they told me.

• 47:40Adam Friedland?

No Jews, they didn't let Jews, they didn't let Jews.

• 47:44Speaker 02

In Washington DC, because the federal government and, and the military was the first thing that blacks could get a good job. All of the quotas, every single month, were filled up by black enlistments.

• 47:56Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 47:57Speaker 02

  And that's why I didn't get drafted.

• 47:58Adam Friedland?

  Because you were white?

• 48:00Speaker 02

  No.

• 48:01Adam Friedland?

I don't get it, I'm confused, why, so why did you get drafted?

• 48:05Speaker 02

Because all the blacks enlisted, filled up the quota every month.

• 48:09Adam Friedland?

They enlisted, because it was a good job and DC was poor.

• 48:11Speaker 02

  It was a good job.

• 48:12Adam Friedland?

  Okay, sorry.

• 48:12Speaker 02

And said, "Then my wife gets pregnant and I'm out of the draft."

• 48:15Adam Friedland?

Yeah, yeah. You sound like a regular Jane Fonda to me.

• 48:18Speaker 02

  No, I'm not.

• 48:19Adam Friedland?

  Yes, you are.

• 48:19Speaker 02

I used to interview Jane Fonda, right after she went to Hanoi.

• 48:22Adam Friedland?

She impregnated someone, so she didn't have to go? She got, never mind. Okay.

• 48:28Speaker 02

I think you got it wrong.

• 48:29Adam Friedland?

I'm nervous, Maury. I'm nervous because I'm a big fan of yours.

• 48:33Speaker 02

Jeez. So you... Half a million people on YouTube, this is pretty good.

• 48:38Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, it's good.

• 48:39Speaker 02

  In fact, my nephew's...

• 48:40Adam Friedland?

Can you imagine why? I don't get why.

• 48:42Speaker 02

My nephew's girlfriend, Lee Beth, as soon as she read the interview, she called, she texted me, she said, "I can't believe that you and Adam Friedland got together." "He's the best."

• 48:56Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, it was an honor.

• 48:57Speaker 02

"I watch him all the time."

• 48:58Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 48:58Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 48:59Adam Friedland?

Oh, well, tell her thank you.

• 49:00Speaker 02

  Out of the blue.

• 49:01Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 49:02Speaker 02

Never heard from her before, ever.

• 49:04Adam Friedland?

Maybe, send it to Tony, maybe send that to...

• 49:07Speaker 02

You really want Tony on your show, huh?

• 49:09Adam Friedland?

I just want to be friends with him.

• 49:11Speaker 02

Guess what? When I had Will Bond and Tony on,

• 49:13Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 49:14Speaker 02

he would only be on, he would only be on audio, he wouldn't be on video.

• 49:19Adam Friedland?

We could get someone to play him and we'll do like AI or something. Yeah. How bad was the gift? He didn't give me a gift. I mean, that's amazing. It's morning, I'm getting ready for work. Bust out the funnies, okay? Have a Huel, okay? The ready-to-drink from Huel saves me constantly. A complete meal that I can drink helps me stay consistent. Consistency is key, and that's really the magic behind The Adam Friedland Show. It's because of the 35 grams of protein, 27 essential vitamins and minerals, no artificial sweeteners or colors or flavors, gluten-free, under $5 per meal. A complete meal that you can grab and go,

• 50:02Adam Friedland?

and you'll be looking like a, like a full meal. Remember that, looking like a snack? I use the powder when I want something more built, like thicker, blended, or more filling. It's the same high protein, same complete meal benefits, flexible flavors, I love it when that happens. And you could add fruit, or nut butter, or ice, etc. So, if you're trying to stay consistent, this combo makes it stupidly easy. Getting back to you and your story and your career. You're a newsman. You're affiliate stations.

• 55:55Speaker 02

  Right. Everything.

• 55:56Adam Friedland?

How many cities were you in?

• 55:59Speaker 02

I started in Washington and then because of my father, I said after a long time and I was very successful, I said, can I play elsewhere? So in the next seven years, I worked in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia, and back to Washington. In fact, to the point where Richard Reeves, then the White House correspondent for the New York Times, wrote this column in Esquire magazine. He said, "For the last four St. Patty's days, I have watched my friend, Maury Povich, anchor the news in four different cities. He's trying to go nationwide, city by city." That's how crazy my life was.

• 56:42Adam Friedland?

So what were you doing to the Irish at these St. Patrick's days? They got you fired. You said disparaging comments about the Irish.

• 56:51Speaker 02

Do you have a list of people who have done you wrong?

• 56:55Adam Friedland?

No, no, I don't like carrying anything. Because it's like, what does it do for them? If you don't like someone.

• 57:04Speaker 02

So, in this nomadic seven-year career of mine, I had a list of like five station managers or whatever.

• 57:13Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 57:14Speaker 02

  That I said, "Boy."

• 57:17Adam Friedland?

Did you get them back ever?

• 57:18Speaker 02

I hope they get theirs, you know? So, believe it or not, every single one of them, in subsequent years, all got fired.

• 57:27Adam Friedland?

  Good.

• 57:28Speaker 02

And I, instead of going, I felt sorry for them.

• 57:33Adam Friedland?

Yeah, it's like their health insurance. They're kids, you know? Sad to lose a job.

• 57:39Speaker 02

I was really surprised that I felt sorry for them, rather than hold the grudge.

• 57:44Adam Friedland?

Well, they were like, "Laurie's handsome, he'll figure it out."

• 57:48Speaker 02

  They didn't think so.

• 57:49Adam Friedland?

They didn't think you were handsome? You were a good-looking chap.

• 57:53Speaker 02

One guy didn't think I was good anchor material, another guy didn't think that...

• 57:58Adam Friedland?

  Was there an anti-Semitism thing?

• 58:00Speaker 02

  No.

• 58:00Adam Friedland?

  No, okay. Good.

• 58:02Speaker 02

  I don't think you're...

• 58:04Adam Friedland?

I guess you could... I was just playing.

• 58:06Speaker 02

You can have it on your mind and anything else, but guess what?

• 58:09Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 58:09Speaker 02

I don't think I've ever, in my lifetime, experienced that in the business.

• 58:14Adam Friedland?

Yeah, I don't really think I have experienced it.

• 58:17Speaker 02

  No.

• 58:17Adam Friedland?

  In a real way.

• 58:18Speaker 02

Are you kidding? All the Jewish comics?

• 58:20Adam Friedland?

Oh, in the business, no, because we started the business.

• 58:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 58:24Adam Friedland?

Yeah. I got a call after October 7th from my agent, and he's like, "How are you?" And I'm like, "My career?" And he's like, "No, with the impending eradication of our people." Pablo just got a call.

• 58:36Speaker 02

  Huh?

• 58:37Adam Friedland?

  We have to follow up.

• 58:38Speaker 02

  You want to call Pablo?

• 58:39Adam Friedland?

Pablo just got a call from Tony.

• 58:44Adam Friedland?

  Let's see what's going on.

• 58:46Speaker 02

If you ruin my relationship with Tony Kornheiser... I will tell you this. I will make sure that, within a year, you'll have about 3,000 YouTube viewers.

• 58:57Adam Friedland?

What are you gonna do? You're gonna get Bush? You're gonna get Bush to invade me?

• 59:07Adam Friedland?

Pablo, why are you picking up?

• 59:09Speaker 04

  Hello.

• 59:10Adam Friedland?

  So, okay, hi.

• 59:11Speaker 02

  Pablo.

• 59:12Speaker 04

  Hi.

• 59:13Speaker 02

  Pablo. Pablo.

• 59:15Adam Friedland?

Why you say hi low? You said hi sad to me.

• 59:18Speaker 02

I'm telling you right now Pablo, if this, if these last 10 minutes have destroyed my relationship with Tony Kornheiser, I will...

• 59:29Speaker 04

  Look, Maury, how do I...

• 59:32Adam Friedland?

  He's not happy?

• 59:34Speaker 04

No, I mean, he just calls me up and he immediately says, "Who is this Adam Friedman?"

• 59:41Adam Friedland?

  So what'd you say?

• 59:42Speaker 04

And then I become your agent.

• 59:44Adam Friedland?

  So what'd you say?

• 59:45Speaker 04

He's very popular with young people. I kind of like appealed to Kornheiser and how he thinks of things.

• 59:51Adam Friedland?

  Thank you.

• 59:52Speaker 04

Young people love him. They say he's a millennial Jon Stewart. He's a super fan.

• 1:00:00Adam Friedland?

  I love him.

• 1:00:01Speaker 04

  So I said that.

• 1:00:03Adam Friedland?

So I told him I'm gonna get the Asella for him tomorrow.

• 1:00:06Speaker 02

  Pablo, Pablo.

• 1:00:08Speaker 04

I mean, this is where... Maury, you know, you, I mean, Maury and I know, I mean, Maury's way more successful at this than me.

• 1:00:15Adam Friedland?

  No, I wouldn't say that. You're a star.

• 1:00:19Speaker 04

No, well, on the level of like being a media supernova, but also like getting him to, getting Kornheiser to do anything.

• 1:00:27Adam Friedland?

Well, because Maury's like a scratch golfer. He's amazing.

• 1:00:31Speaker 04

Yeah, I know, Maury's an athlete.

• 1:00:33Speaker 02

Pablo, did you tell Adam about how we toasted, how we dusted Nick Cannon on Playing Spades?

• 1:00:42Adam Friedland?

We gotta hear this, yeah? What's up?

• 1:00:44Speaker 04

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:00:45Speaker 02

We went on Nick Cannon's We Playin' Spades podcast and we dusted him and his co-hosts.

• 1:00:51Speaker 04

  Obliterated.

• 1:00:52Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 1:00:53Speaker 02

  Me and Pablo.

• 1:00:54Adam Friedland?

You know Nick Cannon has some thoughts about the Jewish juice.

• 1:00:59Speaker 04

  That did not come up.

• 1:01:00Speaker 02

  His doctor is Jewish.

• 1:01:02Adam Friedland?

  Doctor, Dr. Sebi?

• 1:01:04Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:01:06Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:06Speaker 02

  That stuff.

• 1:01:07Adam Friedland?

Pablo, I talked to Tony and it felt like flying.

• 1:01:11Speaker 04

I was gonna say, what I told him was, by merely being irate on the phone with Maury about Adam, you made Adam's day.

• 1:01:20Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:21Speaker 04

  You made Adam's day.

• 1:01:22Adam Friedland?

Really, yeah. And I meet people all the time for the show and I'm sick in the head. I'm delusional. Like, I'm not nervous around anyone. It's the first time I've been nervous since I saw Dice at the stand.

• 1:01:35Speaker 04

  You saw Andrew Dice Clay?

• 1:01:36Adam Friedland?

I get nervous for the most random people, yeah.

• 1:01:39Speaker 02

  I don't know him. What's he like?

• 1:01:41Adam Friedland?

What's he like? His act or as a guy?

• 1:01:45Speaker 02

  Person.

• 1:01:46Adam Friedland?

As a guy, I think he's just a Jewish guy. I think it's a character. But his act is as if the last 40 years of culture has never happened. He had a chunk on Caitlyn Jenner that was, woo, oof. That was...

• 1:02:03Adam Friedland?

"You're with the sexy girl, you reach down the front of her pants, there's a fucking tree trunk." I think that was one of the lines. It was really... It was a blast from the past.

• 1:02:14Speaker 04

You should tell Cornazier this. You should say that there are two people who've made me feel this way. One is you, the other is... And then you should just do your impression of Andrew Dice Clay.

• 1:02:21Adam Friedland?

Yeah, yeah. Yeah. The other one was Jadakiss when he came on the show.

• 1:02:27Speaker 02

Pablo, Pablo, this is important, Pablo.

• 1:02:29Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 1:02:30Speaker 02

Where are you with the NBA? Are you still persona non grata?

• 1:02:33Speaker 04

I may or may not be tailed at various arenas these days, Maury.

• 1:02:38Adam Friedland?

  Are they listening?

• 1:02:40Speaker 04

They might be, honestly. Depending on the... I don't know what level of Israeli spyware has been installed on my phone or by which owner, but it's non-zero chance that they're also listening to us right now. I'm jealous.

• 1:02:52Adam Friedland?

Well, Pablo, you told me that you think this Iran thing is going... Awesome.

• 1:02:59Speaker 04

I said, the straight is under control. The Strait of Hormuz is famously under control.

• 1:03:05Adam Friedland?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, I was, I saw Dice performing, he's like, "I was with this chick and the Strait of, the Strait of Hormuz was closed." Yeah, no, I tried something there, we're gonna cut that.

• 1:03:16Speaker 02

  Doesn't work.

• 1:03:17Speaker 04

  No, leave that in.

• 1:03:18Speaker 02

  You're gonna cut that?

• 1:03:19Adam Friedland?

And the Strait of Hormuz was closed.

• 1:03:21Speaker 02

Pablo, I've been on here an hour and I guarantee you 30 minutes of it has been cut.

• 1:03:26Speaker 04

I was gonna say, is Maury aware of how, is Maury aware of how predatory your edit's gonna be on this?

• 1:03:32Adam Friedland?

We haven't even talked about the talk show yet. We haven't even said the term "not the father" yet. We're just, this is just, this is, the chemistry between me and this gentleman, this legend of...

• 1:03:44Speaker 04

Let me say this, I'm so jealous that you guys are hanging out without me.

• 1:03:49Adam Friedland?

You wanna come over? We'll keep going for another, I don't know, you need another hour?

• 1:03:53Speaker 04

Keep it going for a couple more hours and I'll drop in.

• 1:03:56Adam Friedland?

All right, you wanna get Tony Reality maybe, Woody Page?

• 1:04:00Speaker 02

By the way, I love Woody Page.

• 1:04:02Speaker 04

  We'll get Tim Callahan.

• 1:04:03Speaker 02

  I love Woody Page.

• 1:04:04Speaker 04

  We'll have to bring Callahan.

• 1:04:05Adam Friedland?

  Okay.

• 1:04:06Speaker 04

Maury, I miss you, man, and I do wanna just reiterate that it was a transcendent moment of my life when we once again destroyed Nick Cannon.

• 1:04:14Adam Friedland?

You're such a suck up, you're such a suck up.

• 1:04:16Speaker 02

No, I will. And by the way, I got the greatest comments from Pete.

• 1:04:20Speaker 04

Sorry, I have mentors, sorry, I have mentors.

• 1:04:23Speaker 02

You know what the greatest comment was that I saw underneath the, underneath the podcast? You know when they put comments? You know what the greatest comment, I wear it as an honor?

• 1:04:32Adam Friedland?

  What's that?

• 1:04:33Speaker 02

One comment was, "He's welcome at the cookout."

• 1:04:37Adam Friedland?

  Oh, really?

• 1:04:38Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 1:04:39Adam Friedland?

Yeah, Maury, that leads me to my, to my next question. So you famously got the hood pass, is that correct? You met with the Council of Elders?

• 1:04:49Speaker 02

I, I, there are, there are people that call me white chocolate.

• 1:04:55Adam Friedland?

Pablo, we gotta go finish this. This is the best day of my life.

• 1:04:58Speaker 04

I cannot be happier that you're living your Make-A-Wish dream today.

• 1:05:05Adam Friedland?

Well, I am dying. That is true. I meant to tell you.

• 1:05:08Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:05:08Adam Friedland?

Who told you that I'm dying? The Mossad?

• 1:05:13Adam Friedland?

They know everything. All right, bye, pal.

• 1:05:15Speaker 02

  Thanks, Pablo.

• 1:05:16Speaker 04

  Bye. Love you.

• 1:05:17Speaker 02

  Bye. Love you. Bye.

• 1:05:18Adam Friedland?

Wait, I really wanna get into you and your show.

• 1:05:21Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:05:21Adam Friedland?

Because that era of media, like I said, your parents are at work, you're sick. You know, you could watch TV all day.

• 1:05:28Speaker 02

By the way, did you ever have to fake it?

• 1:05:32Adam Friedland?

Usually, a lady never tells, right?

• 1:05:37Speaker 02

No, but this is why. Because I ask people that, because, "Oh, I stayed home. I pretended I was sick." I said, "How did you convince your parents that you were sick?" They said, "They took the thermometer and held it up to a light bulb."

• 1:05:51Adam Friedland?

Oh, yeah, yeah. Or, yeah, or like under, yeah. They're like, you put a coin in your mouth, like a penny in your mouth, and it'll get hot. I don't fucking, no, I mean, I would fake, yeah. No, I wanted to go to school. School sucks. TV's awesome. Teachers give too much homework. We all know this.

• 1:06:08Speaker 02

I was terrible in school. Just terrible.

• 1:06:10Adam Friedland?

You got into Penn. You got into Ivy League.

• 1:06:12Speaker 02

It was back in the days anybody could get in anywhere.

• 1:06:14Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 1:06:15Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:06:16Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 1:06:16Speaker 02

  In 1957? Come on.

• 1:06:18Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 1:06:19Speaker 02

  Yeah, I mean, Jesus.

• 1:06:20Adam Friedland?

You know, Caleb went to Harvard.

• 1:06:22Speaker 02

I didn't get into Yale, though. That's where I wanted to go.

• 1:06:24Adam Friedland?

Well, they didn't let us, right? We had to go to Harvard.

• 1:06:27Speaker 02

  My brother was at Yale.

• 1:06:27Adam Friedland?

Oh, he was the first Jew?

• 1:06:29Speaker 02

  No, he was not.

• 1:06:29Adam Friedland?

Yeah, I heard that it was.

• 1:06:31Speaker 02

  No, he was not.

• 1:06:32Adam Friedland?

Yeah. Yeah. Your brother was in Skull Caps and Bones.

• 1:06:38Speaker 02

No, he wasn't in one of those.

• 1:06:38Adam Friedland?

I'm trying to think of the Jewish.

• 1:06:40Speaker 02

  George W. was.

• 1:06:40Adam Friedland?

The Jewish Skull and Bones. Skull Caps and, come on.

• 1:06:43Speaker 02

He was in a fraternity called St. Elmo.

• 1:06:46Adam Friedland?

  Skull Caps and Moans.

• 1:06:49Adam Friedland?

Skull and... Skull and bones. Yeah, yeah. What goes on there? Can we call... I have no idea. Let's call Crawford. George won't give it up. I heard what it is is that it's just lame. They're just like doing debates like from people from history. They're doing like Lincoln Douglas. Don't care. Yeah, yeah. Anyway. So you're there as a kid watching me. So I'm there as a kid. Price is Right, Jerry. Price is Right is the beginning of the... How about Ricky Lake? I think Jenny Jones was later in the day. Jenny Jones changed everything. She changed everything and then of course... Because of the murder. We'll get there, okay? This was an era of media that was like so thrilling. Because I was TV generation.

• 1:07:33Adam Friedland?

I think television is kind of now it's all streaming and stuff like it's, you know, like... Your generation is passe. And my generation is passe passe. Yeah. At this point in... When people talk about millennials, like when Bill Maher talks about millennials like in his act, I think he thinks they're like 19 years old. Like we're 45 years old now. We're elders, yeah, like... But I was raised on television and there's something about you and Jerry that I just loved. Which was that there were just these like, there were these... For me, obviously, I gotta stop talking about it. But there are these Jewish guys that were just controlling this chaos. And it was so fun.

• 1:08:17Adam Friedland?

We weren't controlling. You were, no, you were hosting a show. Yeah, yeah, that's true, but we're not controlling. I wasn't saying you were creating the chaos. You were... No, but there were, I mean, there were a lot of non-Jews, okay? I mean, you had Geraldo, you had Phil Donahue. He's Jewish. Geraldo's Jewish. Half Jewish.

• 1:08:37Adam Friedland?

Phil Donahue, Phil Donahue, Oprah, Jenny Jones. Jewish. Oprah's Jewish. No, she's not. Yes, she is. Who do you think the media?

• 1:08:46Speaker 02

She is not. I mean, come on.

• 1:08:49Adam Friedland?

But there was something about it where, like I-

• 1:08:53Speaker 02

  Montel, Sally Jesse.

• 1:08:56Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:56Speaker 02

  There were two Jews.

• 1:08:58Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:58Speaker 02

Me and Jerry. That was it.

• 1:09:00Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:01Speaker 02

  Out of 20.

• 1:09:02Adam Friedland?

Montel was a stage name. You think Jon Liebowitz is- Jon Stewart was Jon Liebowitz. Montel Jordan was-

• 1:09:10Speaker 02

I love Jon Stewart. Do you?

• 1:09:11Adam Friedland?

  Montel Jordan was-

• 1:09:13Speaker 02

  Do you like Jon Stewart?

• 1:09:14Adam Friedland?

Uh, yeah. I mean, like, that was the same era. Like, I would watch, like, when I was in high school, when I hated the Iraq War and stuff, I would see comedians on television that were making jokes about it. And I remember when Colbert did the Correspondence Dinner, when your boy's approval, his numbers were, like, rough. It was right at the end.

• 1:09:36Speaker 02

  But guess what?

• 1:09:37Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:38Speaker 02

  He went.

• 1:09:39Adam Friedland?

  He went.

• 1:09:40Speaker 02

And he went every year. And he took-

• 1:09:43Adam Friedland?

  And he got skewered.

• 1:09:44Speaker 02

  He took the, uh-

• 1:09:45Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:46Speaker 02

  He took the skewing.

• 1:09:47Adam Friedland?

Yeah. And if you remember, actually, Trump decided to run the night that Obama was roasting.

• 1:09:55Speaker 02

  You believe that?

• 1:09:56Adam Friedland?

  That's what they say.

• 1:09:57Speaker 02

  I know.

• 1:09:58Adam Friedland?

  What do I believe?

• 1:09:59Speaker 02

  I don't know.

• 1:10:00Adam Friedland?

No? What's the truth? Tell us the truth.

• 1:10:02Speaker 02

  I don't know the truth.

• 1:10:03Adam Friedland?

You know all the secrets about the world.

• 1:10:04Speaker 02

No, but I've seen that written, that that's when Trump said, "I'm gonna get back at this guy. I'm gonna run." I mean-

• 1:10:11Adam Friedland?

Anyway, so what I'm saying is-

• 1:10:13Speaker 02

So it was the golden age of daytime talk, right?

• 1:10:16Adam Friedland?

  There was something-

• 1:10:16Speaker 02

We had 20 shows on the air.

• 1:10:18Adam Friedland?

Right. There was something that was, like, so funny for me, as like a schmucky kid, right? There was something, like, so humorous about, like, about the chaos of all of it. But I suppose, like, when did you realize, like-

• 1:10:38Adam Friedland?

What was your first hit, like, for the show? Did the shows start off differently?

• 1:10:42Speaker 02

Shows started off just like every other tame-

• 1:10:45Adam Friedland?

  Like Donahue.

• 1:10:46Speaker 02

  Tame talk show.

• 1:10:47Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:48Speaker 02

I would do, for instance, I went to do a week in Waco, Texas, for the Branch Davidians and things that were happening down there-

• 1:10:57Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:58Speaker 02

When FBI went and killed everybody.

• 1:10:59Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:00Speaker 02

And so then I did a week in Nashville for country music. I mean, it was, we did secret crushes.

• 1:11:08Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:08Speaker 02

You know, boyfriend, girlfriend, secret crushes, that kind.

• 1:11:11Adam Friedland?

Well, that's what did the Jenny Jones, that was the murder, right? It was a guy that said he had a crush on his friend.

• 1:11:18Speaker 02

Right. And so then, you know, seven, eight years in, Ricky Lake got very popular. And so Ricky Lake was a little edgy, because she had a lot of young people on and they were talking about stuff.

• 1:11:33Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:34Speaker 02

And then all of a sudden, my producer comes up with these three themes. Paternity, lie detector tests, out of control teenagers.

• 1:11:44Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:44Speaker 02

And that just shot me to the moon.

• 1:11:47Adam Friedland?

Yeah, the boot camps, yeah, and the scared straight things.

• 1:11:51Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:11:52Adam Friedland?

It was funny when the kids-

• 1:11:53Speaker 02

Ever tell you about the Larry David thing? Did I ever tell you that?

• 1:11:56Adam Friedland?

That's one of my favorite episodes of Curb, the car salesman episode.

• 1:12:00Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:12:01Adam Friedland?

  Where he's watching your show.

• 1:12:04Speaker 02

  Right, right.

• 1:12:04Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, "You don't know me."

• 1:12:05Speaker 02

  Yeah, "You don't know me."

• 1:12:06Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:07Speaker 02

He calls me up, right? He says, "This is Larry David." Hung up on him. I said, "That's a prank." Calls back up, he says, "I need a clip of your show for the first episode of the series we're doing."

• 1:12:22Adam Friedland?

It's such a good episode, too.

• 1:12:24Speaker 02

And so he's in a hotel room. Cheryl Hines, his wife, is now, they're looking for houses. He's lying in bed, he won't get out of bed.

• 1:12:32Adam Friedland?

Well, he doesn't have a job at the time, too.

• 1:12:34Speaker 02

No, and, "We're gonna look at houses," and he's watching my show on the air.

• 1:12:38Adam Friedland?

  Yeah. "You don't know me."

• 1:12:40Speaker 02

And the teenagers are coming down and the audience are booing him and they're going, "You don't know me, you don't know me, you don't know me." And so Cheryl Hines says, "You gotta get out of bed, you gotta get out of bed." And he goes, "You don't know me, you don't know me."

• 1:12:54Adam Friedland?

You saw the audience wake up. Is that kind of like a... Was that a phenomenon that you would notice?

• 1:13:01Speaker 02

When you start getting boos and yays from an audience, from a live audience, and you're not encouraging it, you've got a winner.

• 1:13:11Adam Friedland?

So, and you were like the moral center of the show. When someone was hurt, famously, people would, after a paternity test, they would run off.

• 1:13:22Adam Friedland?

Did you ever have a camera guy just get fucked? Like, just fuck it, like, just eat shit? Right? Because they would, those people are running, and the camera guy was just... I imagine, like, that guy is a...

• 1:13:33Speaker 02

  He's great.

• 1:13:34Adam Friedland?

Did you get him from like a, like, war, war zone journalism?

• 1:13:38Speaker 02

They were great. The camera people were great. And so, and I would comfort the guest.

• 1:13:42Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:43Speaker 02

Because she found out that he wasn't the father when he thought he was the father and...

• 1:13:48Adam Friedland?

Did you want to be partying with the guys sometimes? And you're like, "Oh, God, I gotta be with this lady? This crying lady? Because this guy's doing backflips, he's break testing?" That guy is...

• 1:14:00Speaker 02

I'm telling you, we had guys who could be gymnasts in the Olympics.

• 1:14:04Adam Friedland?

Oh, my God, you had so many backflips on that show.

• 1:14:09Adam Friedland?

Springer was, of course, more about fights. How many fights did you, did you guys have on the show?

• 1:14:15Speaker 02

  Not much.

• 1:14:15Adam Friedland?

  Not much?

• 1:14:16Speaker 02

But here's, Jerry, oh, look, I knew, Jerry and I started the same year, 1991. So Jerry and I were friends forever. And he gave me the best compliment anybody could give me. Because everybody was talking about his show and my show. And he said, "Here's the difference. Maury's show is the real deal. My show is wrestling."

• 1:14:37Adam Friedland?

Yeah. Which means that a lot of it was scripted, maybe, yeah. Did you ever find out someone was on the show that was a fake or a fraud?

• 1:14:48Speaker 02

Never got that far. They might have gotten to the... They might have gotten to the event and we found out that this is all bullshit.

• 1:14:59Adam Friedland?

Yeah. I remember there was a paternity test where it was twins.

• 1:15:04Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:15:04Adam Friedland?

And the guy was the father of one of them.

• 1:15:07Speaker 02

  But not the other.

• 1:15:08Adam Friedland?

  That's real.

• 1:15:10Speaker 02

  Fraternal twins.

• 1:15:12Adam Friedland?

  With two different?

• 1:15:13Speaker 02

There's identical twins, which means you look alike.

• 1:15:17Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:18Speaker 02

  All right. Fraternal twins.

• 1:15:20Adam Friedland?

Yeah, but it's the same dad, right?

• 1:15:22Speaker 02

For the most part. There's a million to one shot that it might not be.

• 1:15:25Adam Friedland?

  Medically. Wow.

• 1:15:27Speaker 02

  Because.

• 1:15:28Adam Friedland?

  Running train.

• 1:15:28Speaker 02

If the lady is a little active at a certain period of the month.

• 1:15:33Adam Friedland?

Wow. Wow. I had no idea.

• 1:15:37Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:15:38Adam Friedland?

Yeah. Were there moments where, I guess like the Jenny Jones things happened?

• 1:15:44Speaker 02

  Changed everything.

• 1:15:44Adam Friedland?

Okay, what did that change? So another talk show host, just for the audience, you could explain.

• 1:15:49Speaker 02

Jenny Jones had these people on and one guy surprised him because he wanted to be, he was gay and he wanted to be with this other guy and.

• 1:16:01Adam Friedland?

He said, "I have a crush on you, secret crush."

• 1:16:03Speaker 02

  It was so embarrassing.

• 1:16:04Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:16:05Speaker 02

That after the show, later on, I don't know how many days later, one guy was killed by the other guy. And that changed the whole outlook for how we did shows.

• 1:16:18Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:16:18Speaker 02

We had legal teams now. We had psychologists, that we had counselors.

• 1:16:25Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:16:26Speaker 02

At the show every day to make sure that everybody was treated well. We had to end up with a legal, like six pages of, "This will happen, this will happen, this might happen, this might happen, you will not be surprised, this could possibly..." Whatever.

• 1:16:44Adam Friedland?

  Waivers.

• 1:16:45Speaker 02

Yeah. And they had to sign it, so they were never surprised by something like that.

• 1:16:50Adam Friedland?

Content wise, did it shift the content? No. It was just there were more protections.

• 1:16:55Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:16:56Adam Friedland?

Yeah. Was there ever a time where like a producer pitched you on something and you were like, "This is taking it too far"? Or?

• 1:17:04Speaker 02

Well, first of all, I never liked to do shows on race.

• 1:17:07Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:08Speaker 02

Geraldo got in a very big problem one time when he did a big racial show. Huge fight broke out and he broke his nose during the melee.

• 1:17:18Adam Friedland?

Jerry had a KKK guy on and Jerry took it to him.

• 1:17:22Speaker 02

I didn't like that. I didn't like, you know something? Here's the thing, Adam, when I grew up, there were three things you never talked about publicly. Three things. I grew up in a house where there's a certain amount of gentility. You didn't talk religion. That was personal.

• 1:17:41Adam Friedland?

When did your parents tell you you were Jewish?

• 1:17:45Speaker 02

  Probably at my bris.

• 1:17:53Speaker 02

You didn't talk, I never talked publicly about religion. Don't talk about my politics. And I don't talk about money. And we grew up that way. That's how we grew up. Not now. Everything is on the table now. I mean, my generation is just passe. I mean, we're bygones. A different era. I mean, I grew up, you know, Franklin Roosevelt was President of the United States. First time I ever saw my mother cry was when I was six years old when he died.

• 1:18:34Adam Friedland?

It was the war, too. Yeah, and you were six.

• 1:18:36Speaker 02

I gave bond speeches at the age of four.

• 1:18:40Adam Friedland?

Wait, for like to raise war bonds?

• 1:18:43Speaker 02

We need ships, we need guns, we need planes.

• 1:18:46Adam Friedland?

Really? Why? Because you were cute or something?

• 1:18:49Speaker 02

  I guess.

• 1:18:51Speaker 02

There's an 8mm film of me doing that.

• 1:18:56Adam Friedland?

Let's just go back again and we'll get back to the talk show. You've met every president, you said, or been in the Oval Office for every president?

• 1:19:06Speaker 02

I've been in the Oval Office, not Trump. I haven't been to his office.

• 1:19:09Adam Friedland?

  Okay, I hear it's great.

• 1:19:11Speaker 02

  The worst.

• 1:19:12Adam Friedland?

I don't know, you haven't seen it yet.

• 1:19:14Speaker 02

I looked at the gold. I saw the gold.

• 1:19:16Adam Friedland?

Yeah, but the pictures might not do it justice.

• 1:19:20Speaker 02

Pictures, you're right, it's probably worse.

• 1:19:24Adam Friedland?

  I don't know, I'm not.

• 1:19:25Speaker 02

I mean, I don't like to talk about him as a president, but I can tell you right now. That gold in that Oval Office just drives me nuts.

• 1:19:34Adam Friedland?

Yeah, yeah. It's, I mean, he's from Queens, right?

• 1:19:38Speaker 02

Yeah, well, he was, it was gold in Trump town.

• 1:19:40Adam Friedland?

  It's a real estate.

• 1:19:41Speaker 02

Mar-a-Lago. You ever been to Mar-a-Lago?

• 1:19:44Adam Friedland?

I mean, you know, for, on the record, yes. No, I've never been, have you?

• 1:19:50Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:19:51Adam Friedland?

What is it, a place, it's his house where people go have dinner with him?

• 1:19:54Speaker 02

  It's a club.

• 1:19:55Adam Friedland?

It's a club, but he lives there.

• 1:19:56Speaker 02

  He lives there.

• 1:19:57Adam Friedland?

  And no one else does.

• 1:20:00Speaker 02

I think there are some other houses on the property.

• 1:20:02Adam Friedland?

It's kind of cool to have like your house and then everyone wants to come chill with you. And you have, they have to pay to come chill with you.

• 1:20:09Speaker 02

Then he took the rose garden and made that like a patio.

• 1:20:15Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 1:20:15Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:20:17Adam Friedland?

  I mean.

• 1:20:18Speaker 02

  Cement patio.

• 1:20:20Adam Friedland?

  Listen.

• 1:20:20Speaker 02

That rose garden was so pretty.

• 1:20:21Adam Friedland?

It's a real estate shyster from Jamaica Estates, Queens. What do you expect? It's shame on us, I think, if anything. But going back to it, like, um, like, what, what did, like, what, what president, like, uh, so you, you met Nixon? You met Ford? You met Carter?

• 1:20:43Speaker 02

I don't know. Did I, yeah, I met Nixon and I met Ford.

• 1:20:47Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:20:49Speaker 02

Carter, yeah, I met Carter, believe it or not. I was doing a local talk show.

• 1:20:52Adam Friedland?

  Paternity test.

• 1:20:53Speaker 02

No, and the day, the day that he was going to announce the president, he came on my local show.

• 1:20:59Adam Friedland?

Really? Yeah. He's a very nice man, from what I understand.

• 1:21:02Speaker 02

  He was okay.

• 1:21:03Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:21:05Speaker 02

  I'd say.

• 1:21:06Adam Friedland?

Who made the biggest impression on you?

• 1:21:08Speaker 02

Besides George, who was a friend.

• 1:21:10Adam Friedland?

George is a friend, but I mean, like, just seeing them.

• 1:21:13Speaker 02

Well, you know that feeling that you, you got right now, talking to Tony?

• 1:21:19Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:20Speaker 02

So, I'm covering Kennedy for the first time?

• 1:21:23Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:23Speaker 02

  I got that feeling.

• 1:21:24Adam Friedland?

Yeah. Did it, it felt like your generation. It felt like a younger guy.

• 1:21:28Speaker 02

  Oh, my God, dude.

• 1:21:29Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:21:30Speaker 02

I mean, I mean, think about it, I had. I had Roosevelt, I had Truman, and I had Eisenhower.

• 1:21:40Adam Friedland?

  Ike, yeah.

• 1:21:41Speaker 02

  These are old guys.

• 1:21:43Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:21:44Speaker 02

And now a 42 or 3-year-old, are you kidding me? And I'm 24 or 5.

• 1:21:50Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:51Speaker 02

  I mean.

• 1:21:53Adam Friedland?

How does a journalist that feels a certain way about their subject? Like, you come from a different era, right? Now, now.

• 1:22:00Speaker 02

  There's a, there was a wall.

• 1:22:01Adam Friedland?

  There was a wall.

• 1:22:02Speaker 02

  There's a wall.

• 1:22:02Adam Friedland?

Obviously Walter Cronkite had his own opinions.

• 1:22:05Speaker 02

  Sure.

• 1:22:05Adam Friedland?

  But it wasn't presented.

• 1:22:07Speaker 02

No, and the reason why the Vietnam War was a loser was when he, all of a sudden, for the first time, does this huge, 5-minute exploration of how we're losing the war. He would never, ever have done that before.

• 1:22:23Adam Friedland?

Yeah. One of the problems, I think, with the digital era is there's a blurring of lines. Like, you remember when there were 3 networks, right?

• 1:22:33Speaker 02

  Sure.

• 1:22:33Adam Friedland?

  There were 3.

• 1:22:33Speaker 02

  That was it.

• 1:22:34Adam Friedland?

  There were 3, like.

• 1:22:35Speaker 02

  ABC, NBC, CBS.

• 1:22:36Adam Friedland?

  There were 3 primetime anchors.

• 1:22:37Speaker 02

  That's it.

• 1:22:39Adam Friedland?

And nowadays, there's, people get their news from, you know, like, some guy in a library.

• 1:22:45Speaker 02

They might get the news from you.

• 1:22:46Adam Friedland?

Yeah, and I try, I genuinely, this is on a sincere note, I try not to present myself from a position of authority when it comes to things that I'm not.

• 1:22:57Speaker 02

On my podcast this week, okay? On my podcast this week, On Par with Maury Povich. Thank you very much for your comment.

• 1:23:03Adam Friedland?

Give it up, give it up.

• 1:23:04Speaker 02

All right, so Joy Reid is my guest tonight, all right? And I challenged her a little bit about, are you a journalist or aren't you a journalist? And she says, she describes herself, and I think that's legit. She calls herself an opinion journalist.

• 1:23:22Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:23Speaker 02

  Is that okay?

• 1:23:26Adam Friedland?

  An opinionist, yeah, yeah.

• 1:23:28Speaker 02

But, but she calls herself a journalist because she thinks her opinion is based on fact.

• 1:23:33Adam Friedland?

But everything is opinion, right? Like, these days, and it used to be.

• 1:23:37Speaker 02

  These days, definitely.

• 1:23:38Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:40Adam Friedland?

Do you think, do you consider this to be bad for society?

• 1:23:48Adam Friedland?

Or do you think that journalism being democratized is a good thing?

• 1:23:54Speaker 02

My problem is, there is a truth, right?

• 1:24:00Adam Friedland?

  Right.

• 1:24:01Speaker 02

And I think it's all getting blurred. I think there's a lot of fog around the truth, and it's very difficult to find it.

• 1:24:08Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:09Speaker 02

  That's my problem.

• 1:24:11Adam Friedland?

Yeah. Did you ever encounter Psy Hirsch?

• 1:24:15Speaker 02

Yes. Yeah. He used to come on my talk show in Washington.

• 1:24:18Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:19Speaker 02

  Now Psy Hirsch.

• 1:24:21Adam Friedland?

I just read his memoir. Yeah.

• 1:24:23Speaker 02

Boy, he broke a lot of stories.

• 1:24:25Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:24:26Speaker 02

Eli was the best, probably, but most important.

• 1:24:30Adam Friedland?

Incredible. And The Post had to stand like up alongside the New York Times,

• 1:24:37Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:24:38Adam Friedland?

you know, against the... They went to the Supreme Court, is that right?

• 1:24:42Speaker 02

  Went to the Supreme Court.

• 1:24:42Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:43Speaker 02

  Pentagon Papers.

• 1:24:44Adam Friedland?

  The Pentagon, yeah, Ellsberg.

• 1:24:47Speaker 02

  Interviewed him, too.

• 1:24:49Adam Friedland?

Daniel Ellsberg, yeah. Is he still alive? I don't know.

• 1:24:52Speaker 02

  You know, I don't know.

• 1:24:54Adam Friedland?

This is like two Jews having sandwiches.

• 1:24:56Speaker 02

  I think maybe...

• 1:24:57Adam Friedland?

  Was he still with us?

• 1:24:58Speaker 02

  I think he died recently.

• 1:25:00Adam Friedland?

Oh, I think he did die recently, yeah. Wait, so going back, I read Psy Hirsch's book, and it just, the budgets, like, your father's sports division

• 1:25:14Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:25:14Adam Friedland?

was just shut down, if I'm not

• 1:25:16Speaker 02

  Correct.

• 1:25:16Adam Friedland?

  if I'm not mistaken.

• 1:25:17Speaker 02

  He'd be very upset.

• 1:25:19Adam Friedland?

  The budgets that news had

• 1:25:22Speaker 02

Not only the sports page was shut down, the metro section, the local news

• 1:25:28Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:25:28Speaker 02

section was closed down. Can you imagine that?

• 1:25:31Adam Friedland?

Is that not being a thing anymore? Is us not getting our news in a controlled

• 1:25:36Speaker 02

  That's the problem.

• 1:25:36Adam Friedland?

  way anymore?

• 1:25:37Speaker 02

First of all, why would any newspaper have a sports section if we're inundated 24 hours with all the results

• 1:25:46Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:25:47Speaker 02

  and all the various

• 1:25:48Adam Friedland?

  It is stupid.

• 1:25:49Speaker 02

outlets and things like that, where you can get it instantly.

• 1:25:54Adam Friedland?

Yeah. When you were a kid, getting ready for school, it must be different because your dad was the head of the sports page.

• 1:26:00Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:26:00Adam Friedland?

But like, did you like have your cereal and then open up the sports page like you're

• 1:26:05Speaker 02

  Every single day.

• 1:26:06Adam Friedland?

  like you're an adult?

• 1:26:06Speaker 02

  Every single day.

• 1:26:07Adam Friedland?

I used to do that, too.

• 1:26:08Speaker 02

And you know, when my father died, there were more comments from people who said, "We learn to read." With your father's column.

• 1:26:16Adam Friedland?

Yeah, I think I had batting averages like memorized.

• 1:26:19Speaker 02

  Sure.

• 1:26:19Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, like it's a.

• 1:26:21Speaker 02

I remember one time, so my father. One time, I'm a kid and he's in the dugout interviewing the Hall of Fame managers. Casey Stengel of the New York Yankees.

• 1:26:33Adam Friedland?

  Yes.

• 1:26:34Speaker 02

Casey Stengel used to meander all over the place. He used to use dangling participles, misplaced modifiers. You never knew what was gonna come out of his mouth.

• 1:26:42Adam Friedland?

  Right, he was a lot.

• 1:26:43Speaker 02

So I'm there, my father's interviewing him. The next day, the 800-word column was, end quote, 800 words later, out quote. Oh, boy.

• 1:26:54Adam Friedland?

  Who we got?

• 1:26:55Speaker 02

  Pam, thank you.

• 1:26:57Adam Friedland?

  Let's just listen.

• 1:26:58Speaker 02

  No, we're not.

• 1:26:59Adam Friedland?

  Pick it up.

• 1:26:59Speaker 02

  No, we're not doing that.

• 1:27:00Adam Friedland?

  Why not?

• 1:27:00Speaker 02

No, no, I'm in the middle of a story.

• 1:27:02Adam Friedland?

No, I'll, but I'll, I'll say shame on you. Hello?

• 1:27:08Speaker 02

  Hello?

• 1:27:11Speaker 02

  Oh, good.

• 1:27:12Adam Friedland?

Yes, we would like to sign up, okay.

• 1:27:15Speaker 02

So, anyway, the column the next morning, 800 words, starts, finish, nothing but Casey Stengel talking.

• 1:27:23Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:27:25Speaker 02

I said to him, I said, Dad, I sat next to you while you interviewed Casey Stengel. He didn't say half of that. He didn't say half of the things that you printed. He says he should have.

• 1:27:40Adam Friedland?

Wait, so you're gonna get fired?

• 1:27:42Speaker 02

Dramatic license, some of you get dramatic license. When you wanna have fun, you can have fun.

• 1:27:47Adam Friedland?

Yeah. So making a transition from hard news to talk shows.

• 1:27:52Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:27:53Adam Friedland?

Like, what was there, did you ever miss it? You know, did you ever like?

• 1:27:59Speaker 02

I missed, I missed covering the events.

• 1:28:01Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:28:02Speaker 02

You know, I, I mean, even.

• 1:28:03Adam Friedland?

The president has been shot, you know, like.

• 1:28:06Speaker 02

  Yeah, I would have.

• 1:28:07Adam Friedland?

  You covered Kennedy's assassination?

• 1:28:09Speaker 02

I covered, I was at Andrews Air Force Base when that plane came home. And I was there when Jackie Kennedy came off that plane with the blood on her pink dress. On her pink suit. And the coffin coming out the back.

• 1:28:22Adam Friedland?

  Wow.

• 1:28:23Speaker 02

Now, I mean, even when I was doing A Current Affair, this crazy show.

• 1:28:30Speaker 02

I'm there at the fall of the Berlin Wall. In other words, I went places and things. It was great. Since the talk show, I haven't covered any of this stuff. And, yeah, I missed the event.

• 1:28:43Adam Friedland?

Yeah, it would have been nice to cover January 6th.

• 1:28:48Speaker 02

Would have been great. Would have been great.

• 1:28:50Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:28:51Speaker 02

  I would have loved that.

• 1:28:53Adam Friedland?

Yeah, it is kind of the craziest thing I've ever seen in my entire life.

• 1:28:57Speaker 02

  Yeah, probably your generation, yeah.

• 1:28:59Adam Friedland?

No, no, those guys, I don't think they're mine.

• 1:29:02Speaker 02

I was working in San Francisco.

• 1:29:04Adam Friedland?

That's my Omaha Beach, I think.

• 1:29:05Speaker 02

  Yeah, January 6th.

• 1:29:07Adam Friedland?

Yeah, January 6th. That's Washington crossing the Delaware.

• 1:29:10Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:29:13Adam Friedland?

  That's what we got.

• 1:29:14Speaker 02

  That's my Berlin Wall.

• 1:29:15Adam Friedland?

Yeah, yeah. Yeah, so, yeah, I guess like, but the interesting thing about you is your wife, Connie Chung, was doing that throughout.

• 1:29:27Speaker 02

  Doing it all.

• 1:29:28Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:29:29Speaker 02

  Doing it all.

• 1:29:29Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:29:30Speaker 02

  And breaking barriers.

• 1:29:31Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:29:32Speaker 02

  And so, you know.

• 1:29:35Adam Friedland?

What did she like, yeah, what is it like to be with a woman that's just so much more impressive and beautiful? Can I ask that question again?

• 1:29:44Speaker 02

  Yeah, you can.

• 1:29:44Adam Friedland?

I thought it was gonna be a laugh.

• 1:29:45Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:29:46Adam Friedland?

I thought we were gonna be busting balls. What's it like to be with such an impressive, incredible person?

• 1:29:51Speaker 02

I love it. I mean, how would it be if, you know, you were attached?

• 1:29:58Adam Friedland?

They're all our better halves, right? Yeah, mine is better.

• 1:30:02Speaker 02

  Yeah, I mean.

• 1:30:03Adam Friedland?

You wanna talk to her? Should we call her?

• 1:30:05Speaker 02

No, we're not talking to her.

• 1:30:05Adam Friedland?

  Okay.

• 1:30:08Speaker 02

  We're not talking to her.

• 1:30:09Adam Friedland?

  So, yeah.

• 1:30:10Speaker 02

  I talk to her enough.

• 1:30:12Adam Friedland?

Yeah. You've talked to mine enough?

• 1:30:16Speaker 02

You want me to talk to your girlfriend?

• 1:30:18Adam Friedland?

Did he say he talked to mine enough? Oh, I thought you were doing a joke like, "I talked to her enough." Yeah, like, ha ha. That would have been good. You wanna run that again? Can we call my girlfriend?

• 1:30:28Speaker 02

Yeah, I'd like to call your girlfriend.

• 1:30:30Adam Friedland?

No, no, no, no, you're supposed to say, "No, I talked to her enough." Morning. Okay, we'll do it a third time.

• 1:30:38Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:30:39Adam Friedland?

  From the top.

• 1:30:39Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:30:40Adam Friedland?

  Let's get an edit point.

• 1:30:41Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:30:43Adam Friedland?

What, my, you know, there are better halves.

• 1:30:45Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:30:46Adam Friedland?

You know, my, uh, these women, I, let me run that again. Okay, fourth, take four. Can we call my girlfriend?

• 1:30:56Speaker 02

No. I talked to her enough.

• 1:31:04Adam Friedland?

  Wait.

• 1:31:06Speaker 02

  Oh, boy.

• 1:31:09Adam Friedland?

  What are you saying?

• 1:31:10Speaker 02

  Is your girlfriend?

• 1:31:11Adam Friedland?

  What are you saying?

• 1:31:11Speaker 02

Are your girlfriend much younger than you?

• 1:31:13Adam Friedland?

  Are me? Are mine?

• 1:31:15Speaker 02

Is your girlfriend much younger than you?

• 1:31:17Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, she's, uh, she's-

• 1:31:18Speaker 02

  You're 39, where is she?

• 1:31:20Adam Friedland?

  She's 14 and a half.

• 1:31:24Adam Friedland?

  Uh, it's called grooming. No, yeah, she's, uh, she's, she's 29, yeah.

• 1:31:29Speaker 02

Do you like that difference? Do you like the decade difference?

• 1:31:32Adam Friedland?

It's not an aspect of the preference. I don't think I've ever, when we first started dating, dated someone. I, I think most of my girlfriends were two years younger. I think maturity-wise, she, uh, I'm the-

• 1:31:45Speaker 02

  She's gotta be more mature.

• 1:31:46Adam Friedland?

I'm the young, uh, yeah, yeah, I'm the, I'm the baby.

• 1:31:48Speaker 02

  I'm just seeing you.

• 1:31:48Adam Friedland?

I am the baby. I, I am a baby, yeah. I hurt myself, uh, all the time just walking in my apartment. And she said, I, she says, "I have no sympathy for you."

• 1:31:59Speaker 02

I hope, I hope that she-

• 1:32:00Adam Friedland?

She says that, like a mom.

• 1:32:00Speaker 02

I hope she's a neat freak, because I saw your backstage.

• 1:32:03Adam Friedland?

  No, okay, Thomas.

• 1:32:07Speaker 02

  I saw your backstage life.

• 1:32:08Adam Friedland?

  I know, it's, it's, it's an embarrassment right now.

• 1:32:12Speaker 02

I mean, is she a neat freak? Because she better be.

• 1:32:14Adam Friedland?

She has filled my life with beautiful, with flowers. We'll, we'll say that one. She's, our apartment is stunning, she's lovely, I have no say in-

• 1:32:24Speaker 02

  Is she in the business?

• 1:32:26Adam Friedland?

  No, she's a, she's a designer, like architectural design.

• 1:32:30Speaker 02

  She's a- Architectural designer?

• 1:32:31Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:32:32Speaker 02

  That's serious.

• 1:32:32Adam Friedland?

She's, uh, getting her masters right now.

• 1:32:34Speaker 02

If it was a fashion designer, I would say, forget that, but-

• 1:32:37Adam Friedland?

  Why?

• 1:32:37Speaker 02

  Architecture is really-

• 1:32:39Adam Friedland?

Why, why forget a fashion designer?

• 1:32:41Speaker 02

Well, because that, it won't work with you, look at you.

• 1:32:45Adam Friedland?

That was pretty good. You have a six decade career in something.

• 1:32:50Speaker 02

  Isn't that terrible?

• 1:32:52Adam Friedland?

  It's amazing.

• 1:32:54Speaker 02

Yeah, but maybe it goes, my father worked 75 years, he died the day after he wrote his last article.

• 1:32:59Adam Friedland?

How the fuck old was he when he died? He wrote his last article about what?

• 1:33:04Speaker 02

You know what he wrote it about? It's amazing.

• 1:33:06Adam Friedland?

About a bowl of hard candy?

• 1:33:08Speaker 02

No, he wrote it about, all of a sudden, he was questioning Mark McGuire and Sammy Sosa hitting all these home runs.

• 1:33:14Adam Friedland?

And then they killed him? They killed him!

• 1:33:18Speaker 02

And then the next day, because he was trying to tell them Ruth is the ultimate slugger, not these two. And he was suspicious. He didn't know about steroids, but he was suspicious.

• 1:33:31Adam Friedland?

  Naturally suspicious, yeah, wow.

• 1:33:33Speaker 02

Because he couldn't understand how they were hitting all these three homerun games. And so, he said, especially since McGuire was saying he was taking nutrition shakes to do it.

• 1:33:48Speaker 02

And so he died the next day quietly.

• 1:33:50Adam Friedland?

So he filed that in the Post.

• 1:33:52Speaker 02

His obit and his last column writ, side by side, front page of the Washington Post.

• 1:33:56Adam Friedland?

  So he's 96?

• 1:33:58Speaker 02

  Two.

• 1:33:58Adam Friedland?

  92.

• 1:33:59Speaker 02

  He started at 17.

• 1:34:01Adam Friedland?

Started at 17 in the newspaper.

• 1:34:03Speaker 02

He was a caddy in Bar Harbor, Maine.

• 1:34:05Adam Friedland?

Oh, I thought, I would have assumed like, extray, extray, read all about it, like one of those kids.

• 1:34:10Speaker 02

  No, newsboys, no.

• 1:34:11Adam Friedland?

Yeah, no, he wasn't like that. What do you see as having changed in news and media? Where do you see it? Like, as someone that can document it over so many eras?

• 1:34:23Speaker 02

The definition of news no longer...

• 1:34:25Adam Friedland?

  Exists.

• 1:34:26Speaker 02

  In my mind.

• 1:34:27Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:34:28Speaker 02

  Just doesn't exist.

• 1:34:29Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:34:30Speaker 02

Every single column that I, if you picked up a newspaper... Every single, every single story you read, you believed.

• 1:34:39Adam Friedland?

Yeah. You, you think even in The Times, you think that's been undermined?

• 1:34:45Speaker 02

I think it's been undermined because placement of stories, how big they were and the headlines.

• 1:34:53Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:34:53Speaker 02

And I think that if it's not opinion, analysis has seeped into the coverage of news.

• 1:35:03Adam Friedland?

In the, in the, you're, in the UK, they have the BBC, right? Which is publicly funded, but independent, right?

• 1:35:12Speaker 02

Which we thought NPR might be.

• 1:35:14Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, well, that's gone.

• 1:35:16Speaker 02

Voice of America might be, which is gone, which we thought PBS was.

• 1:35:23Adam Friedland?

Yeah. Do you, do you think that if we had like a robust publicly funded news agency, that their incentive wasn't profit driven? Their incentive was just that to fulfill like a congressional like order?

• 1:35:38Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:35:39Adam Friedland?

Or do you think that that would be preferable? Like if we had one source that was...

• 1:35:44Speaker 02

If they could absolutely determine that it was independent of government, yes.

• 1:35:49Adam Friedland?

Yeah, yeah. I can't think of any other way to do it, you know?

• 1:35:53Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:35:54Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:35:55Speaker 02

  I mean, you can't.

• 1:35:56Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:35:57Speaker 02

I, yeah, I mean, I think maybe, maybe the best, the best kind of journalism today is nonprofit journalism.

• 1:36:07Adam Friedland?

Yeah. Well, I, I, one day, we're gonna get into the black here and then I'm gonna sell out. But right now, the...

• 1:36:17Speaker 02

You're in the red with a half a million YouTube viewers?

• 1:36:20Adam Friedland?

You know, I owe a lot of money around town, Maury.

• 1:36:23Speaker 02

  I don't think so.

• 1:36:24Adam Friedland?

I do. And I wanted to talk to Kornheiser about an opportunity...

• 1:36:29Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:36:30Adam Friedland?

  For him.

• 1:36:30Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:36:33Adam Friedland?

What is the craziest name you heard of a guest on Maury?

• 1:36:40Speaker 02

You ever heard of Josh Johnson?

• 1:36:42Adam Friedland?

  Oh, the comic, yeah.

• 1:36:44Speaker 02

Josh used, I, another reason why I'm honored. Josh used me in a bit one time.

• 1:36:51Adam Friedland?

  What was it?

• 1:36:51Speaker 02

Said that the black community owes me a thank you.

• 1:36:55Adam Friedland?

  Wow, how's that feel?

• 1:36:56Speaker 02

Because Maury Povich has never mispronounced a black name.

• 1:37:02Adam Friedland?

  Is that true?

• 1:37:03Speaker 02

It's true. Because I always, in my entire-

• 1:37:06Adam Friedland?

You had some tough ones on that show.

• 1:37:07Speaker 02

  Oh, huge.

• 1:37:07Adam Friedland?

  Lipiphany, we wrote down. Yeah.

• 1:37:10Speaker 02

Josh would say, "I can't believe it. I see the baby's name on that thing." And there's a "two" in that baby's name. And the next thing he knew, in a full chest, Maury says, "In the case of baby Twain."

• 1:37:24Speaker 02

So I'm honored that Josh did that for me.

• 1:37:27Adam Friedland?

  That has to feel amazing.

• 1:37:28Speaker 02

  Yeah. You like him?

• 1:37:30Adam Friedland?

Oh, yeah. He's on the, he's one of the Daily Show correspondents. Yeah, he's a funny guy.

• 1:37:34Speaker 02

But do you know what his, it's very interesting about his comedy, because I've watched him. He can go two minutes and not get a laugh, building a story.

• 1:37:43Adam Friedland?

  Wow.

• 1:37:44Speaker 02

And yet, I was with Mark Norman the other day.

• 1:37:48Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:37:48Speaker 02

He needs it every 15 seconds.

• 1:37:50Adam Friedland?

Oh, yeah. He's a machine. He's like Rodney.

• 1:37:53Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:37:53Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:37:56Speaker 02

  And how about you?

• 1:37:59Adam Friedland?

Guys, you want to tell them?

• 1:38:02Speaker 02

  Five minutes before a laugh?

• 1:38:04Adam Friedland?

That's, that's even more impressive than Josh, at the two.

• 1:38:07Speaker 02

If you can do that, and people didn't walk out.

• 1:38:09Adam Friedland?

I could go 45 minutes without a single laugh.

• 1:38:13Speaker 02

And you call yourself a comic?

• 1:38:17Speaker 02

Why aren't you just, I mean, you could be Mark Twain by then.

• 1:38:21Adam Friedland?

  Mark Twain-

• 1:38:22Speaker 02

  Was funny.

• 1:38:22Adam Friedland?

  Was the original comic.

• 1:38:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:38:24Adam Friedland?

Yeah. That's what, honestly, I totally, he's on the show next week.

• 1:38:29Speaker 02

And he made a lot more money than-

• 1:38:32Adam Friedland?

  Mark Twain was broke.

• 1:38:34Speaker 02

He was, he was broke because of his investments.

• 1:38:36Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah, he was terrible.

• 1:38:38Speaker 02

Not because of his, he made a lot of money on stage.

• 1:38:41Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:38:42Speaker 02

Oh, my gosh. Somebody's texting me.

• 1:38:44Adam Friedland?

  Well, I think it's been a phenomenal-

• 1:38:47Speaker 02

  Oh, my gosh. Hi.

• 1:38:49Adam Friedland?

  Let's hear it.

• 1:38:51Speaker 02

I ordered your stuff for your colonoscopy.

• 1:38:59Adam Friedland?

My best friend. My best friend.
