• 3:01Speaker 02

Welcome to Meat Eater Radio Live. We're coming to you from Meat Eater HQ in Bozeman, Montana. But we're not live today.

• 3:10Speaker 04

  What?

• 3:12Speaker 02

Yeah. No, this is for June 18th, 19th?

• 3:16Speaker 04

  19th.

• 3:17Speaker 02

This is June 19th. If you're listening to me now, it's federal holiday, Juneteenth, and we are recognizing that here by not being here. So this is a pre-recorded episode. And on today's episode, we've got a great one for you. We're here to answer your questions from how to handle conversations with poachers. Are we?

• 3:40Speaker 04

  Mm hmm.

• 3:40Speaker 02

To unique ways to prepare bear meat. This entire show is Q and A. And it is June 19th today, so we are in the thick of things, summer speaking. Boys have any fun summer plans?

• 3:55Speaker 04

  Oh, man.

• 3:57Speaker 02

I stumbled through that intro. I don't think this is off to a good start.

• 4:00Speaker 04

I think you did great. I don't know who wrote this script, but you crushed that.

• 4:03Speaker 02

Yeah. Pounce some more of that beer.

• 4:05Speaker 05

  It up Randall.

• 4:07Speaker 04

  That's a Pepsi.

• 4:08Speaker 05

Lubricate the wheels. Uh, what are you doing Cory?

• 4:12Speaker 04

  Man.

• 4:13Speaker 05

  Camping?

• 4:14Speaker 04

Been doing some camping. It's been a hot summer already. I feel like, uh, winter.

• 4:19Speaker 05

  Really?

• 4:19Speaker 04

Yeah, it feels like all of a sudden it's just been hot like it feels like it's July out and I it's not it's. June nineteenth.

• 4:27Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 4:28Speaker 04

  But it's actually.

• 4:28Speaker 05

  It is June nineteenth.

• 4:29Speaker 04

June ninth that we're recording this and it's just, uh, it's just hotter than it needs to be already.

• 4:34Speaker 05

  I'll take it.

• 4:35Speaker 04

Was up near our state Capitol over the weekend and it was really smoky. I think it's fires coming down to Canada, but it's like. It's just coming on a little too early. I feel like spring held on pretty well, but then it like we need some snow still.

• 4:48Speaker 05

  The smoke rolled in.

• 4:50Speaker 04

  And.

• 4:51Speaker 05

  Dramatically.

• 4:52Speaker 04

Waters in western Montana are drying up. The rivers are drying up. Reservoirs are not going to fill up this year. It's not looking good.

• 5:00Speaker 05

So you're telling me you're not going to fish much this summer?

• 5:03Speaker 04

I'm going to fish now and come summer I'm going to be. Shooting rocks from a slingshot at carp. Or something else, not catching trout, that's for sure.

• 5:13Speaker 05

Oh yeah, maybe going to the reservoirs and practicing your, uh, spearfishing on some carp in the water.

• 5:19Speaker 04

  Bow fishing maybe.

• 5:20Speaker 05

  That'd be cool.

• 5:21Speaker 04

But yeah, get your Montana trout fishing now because it feels like it's going to be a. Hoot owl coming sooner than later.

• 5:27Speaker 05

What does hoot owl mean Cory?

• 5:30Speaker 04

Well, that's just the term that they've, uh, coined when rivers get a little too warm. If it's above seventy-two degrees for a few days in a row, they'll shut the fishing down mostly in the afternoons. Usually it's around two PM or whenever the water gets hot, but really you just need to have a thermometer in the water and use your head if it gets. Honestly, towards seventy, you should put your fly fishing gear or any of your fishing gear down and go do something else. Get up a little earlier and fish early in the mornings, but we will see that here sooner than later, I'm sure.

• 6:03Speaker 05

So you should need to fish on owl hours.

• 6:06Speaker 04

  Right.

• 6:07Speaker 05

I don't understand. They're only protecting a bunch of non-natives. I can understand if you're killing a bunch of cutthroats, but.

• 6:13Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 6:13Speaker 05

Bunch of rainbows and browns in there.

• 6:15Speaker 04

Yeah, at what point in evolution is something native? And not and non-native still like if a rainbow is born in a river. Obviously, it's not from that area, but at what point like, does it take thousands of years, hundreds of thousands of years? At what point is an animal native to the landscape?

• 6:33Speaker 05

You can ask that same question about humans.

• 6:36Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 6:36Speaker 05

We were just up in Manitoba, you know, on that bear hunt and different parts of that country, Canada, not Manitoba, the province, but you know, they depending on which province you're in, they really respect, they call them the First Nations, right? Which we don't really use that term down here. I started thinking a lot about that. I'm like, well, they were first, but who was before them?

• 7:00Speaker 02

  No one.

• 7:01Speaker 05

  Maybe no one.

• 7:02Speaker 04

Do we know? All the evidence maybe is buried under the sand.

• 7:07Speaker 05

Like, does, does their history go back that far where they're like, oh, no, like, my ancestors came across the uh, land bridge or my ancestors came down the coast and then migrated?

• 7:19Speaker 02

I mean, I think so. They, there's really no other way they

• 7:23Speaker 02

you could have ended up indigenous without having some lineage that goes back to that, right?

• 7:32Speaker 05

Wow, I just don't think we know all the details yet. Do you? You do way more reading about this than I do.

• 7:40Speaker 02

  I mean, I

• 7:43Speaker 02

we're getting into, we're getting into some pretty heady territory here, guys.

• 7:46Speaker 05

  Oh, we are. Um.

• 7:48Speaker 04

This is not where you want to go with this?

• 7:50Speaker 02

  No, no, I, uh.

• 7:51Speaker 05

We're supposed to just be talking about what we're doing this summer.

• 7:56Speaker 04

  What's the meaning of life?

• 7:57Speaker 02

Yanis, I heard you're running a race this summer.

• 8:01Speaker 05

Speaking of being hot this summer, I ran a, a race a couple of days ago. Last week, if you're listening to this on June 19th, uh, in Pocatillo, Idaho called the Scout Mountain Ultra. Ran the 50 mile, uh, distance, which actually in Scout Mountain is, at Scout Mountain is 55. For the first time ever, I used a handkerchief that, or a bandana that was sewn shut and it almost, it had like a sleeve on the long edge. And the ends were open, like where you would tie it, it went around your neck and you stuff ice in there. And then you tie it around your neck. Game changer. And so.

• 8:43Speaker 02

So you did do this this past weekend. It's now coming up next weekend.

• 8:47Speaker 05

  No, I already.

• 8:48Speaker 02

The level of detail convinced me.

• 8:50Speaker 05

Yes. Um, yeah, game changer. And obviously it started with just a regular old bandana. Somebody decided to put some ice in a bandana and they've evolved.

• 9:00Speaker 05

But I bet I would have run at least 30 minutes, maybe 60 minutes longer and been way more affected by the heat. Had I not had this ice bandana.

• 9:10Speaker 04

You were able to find some ice to fill it up throughout the race?

• 9:13Speaker 05

So, yeah, most of these ultras, um, I would say all of them honestly have aid stations. And they're, uh, the, the longest distance that we went between aid stations was just over 10 miles. But most of the time they try to set them at like five to seven. Five sometimes can seem short because you're barely getting through what you've replenished before you need more. 10 felt a little bit long. Uh, especially Saturday because I was like, I had drained all my liquids and everything. But anyways, uh, they know it's going to be hot. They had ice at every single aid station.

• 9:52Speaker 05

Lots of, uh, different, uh, like energy and caloric drinks. Um, like the, you know, Gatorade type stuff, tailwind goo type stuff. But then also they'll just have little cups of Coke.

• 10:05Speaker 04

Did they have some Coke for it?

• 10:06Speaker 05

Oh, yeah. But I don't understand why I'm always, I would rather drink a flat Coke. Because then I don't have the carbonation bouncing around in my belly. But, uh, nobody at this race was, they were like, oh, we thought you'd like carbonation because it settles your stomach. You know how like when you're a kid and.

• 10:22Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 10:22Speaker 05

Set your mom gets a little seven up.

• 10:23Speaker 04

  Oh, yeah.

• 10:24Speaker 02

  Ginger ale.

• 10:25Speaker 04

  Yeah, saltine crackers.

• 10:26Speaker 05

Yeah. But, uh. Yeah. So I ran the 55 in preparation for the crazy mountain 100. Which is at the end of July.

• 10:37Speaker 02

  That'll be hot.

• 10:38Speaker 05

It could be. Could be cold, too.

• 10:41Speaker 02

  It's true.

• 10:41Speaker 05

Weather in the crazies at the end of July.

• 10:44Speaker 02

  Never know.

• 10:45Speaker 05

  Don't know.

• 10:46Speaker 02

Yeah, July 4th last year, you were up there and getting snowed on.

• 10:49Speaker 05

  You were up there?

• 10:51Speaker 02

  Did a little hike.

• 10:53Speaker 05

I mean, odds are it'll be warm. On the warmer side of things than colder, but you never know. I'll be prepared for that. If it's colder, it'll be much easier running. Uh, what else I want to tell you about my recent race?

• 11:07Speaker 02

I see here two emergency poops. Is that correct?

• 11:10Speaker 05

Yes, um, but it was, uh, it was a bad, uh, way to start the race. Within the first 10 miles, I had two of those, but between those two emergency poops, I had three falls. And at 47 years of age, my falls are not getting any easier. I used to kind of like skid, roll, flip, and just like be right back on my feet and trudging along and going like, oh, what was that? You know, and kind of take a couple of deep breaths, make sure the ribs and lungs are okay. Now I like skid and pretty much come to a halt on the ground and then lift my face off the dirt and I'm like, oh. And then I, you know, slowly, like a big buck getting up out of his bed, you know?

• 11:55Speaker 05

Get, get up and stretch and, you know, then check and make sure everything's still working and then proceed down the trail.

• 12:01Speaker 02

  Damn.

• 12:02Speaker 05

I don't know if it was, I was wearing some new shoes. I didn't have too many miles in yet. The trail was, uh, like mountain bike, uh, single track. So it had a little bit of that like V to it.

• 12:13Speaker 02

  It's got a belly.

• 12:13Speaker 05

Yeah. And it had like, like that groove, you know what I'm talking about? And I don't know if that was getting to me. Cause I talked to some other folks that actually fell in that same section too. Um, but yeah, I've made it most of my life not needing to poop while I'm running and those days are behind me.

• 12:30Speaker 02

Are all poops while you're running, emergency poops? What, what crosses that threshold?

• 12:36Speaker 05

I think if I would have been able to, um, I knew I had an aid station coming up. And I'm kind of watching on my watch. I know what mileage it's at. I know how many miles I have to go. And if I could just make it to the aid station. And even if I was, you know, sprinting in there to go have a bowel movement, I would say, oh, it wasn't really an emergency. I had to poop.

• 12:56Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 12:57Speaker 05

But these, these are like, oh no, you're getting off the trail now and you're gonna poop.

• 13:05Speaker 05

Talking to more ultra marathon runners, they're like, oh, if you don't have some of those along with losing some toenails, fighting some nausea, you didn't really experience an ultra marathon.

• 13:18Speaker 04

Well, I would guess like a hundred miles. How long is that gonna take you?

• 13:21Speaker 05

The goal is to do it under thirty miles.

• 13:25Speaker 04

  Thirty hours.

• 13:25Speaker 05

  Thirty, sorry, thirty hours.

• 13:27Speaker 04

  Yeah, that's a few poops.

• 13:28Speaker 05

Yo, for sure. Well, depending, because I think of-

• 13:31Speaker 02

Yeah, if you're traveling, well, sometimes you can go two days.

• 13:35Speaker 04

I have that curse where when I start a new hunt, I don't poop for three or four days. It's bad.

• 13:41Speaker 02

Phil, what about you? Start a new video game? Are you, things moving correctly or?

• 13:45Speaker 05

Yeah, man, I keep a bucket behind the couch, so just in case.

• 13:49Speaker 04

  There you go.

• 13:52Speaker 05

  Ay yi yi.

• 13:53Speaker 02

  Boy, that's a hell of a hobby.

• 13:56Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 13:56Speaker 02

  Real picked a doozy.

• 13:57Speaker 05

Yeah, picked a doozy. But it's, you know, we, we went to bed having this conversation, like, why are we doing this? Like, in our group, someone said, yeah, my, literally, my, my bung hole is like worn raw and fucking on fire. Sorry for the F-bomb. And that's no fun. Like, we're talking about between the three of us, how many toenails we're gonna lose. Everybody's hobbling around, looks like you can barely walk. And like, why, why have we chosen this? Because I used to run just to be in shape for elk hunting, right? Just to be able to chase the bull up the mountain. And now it's become a little bit more of a love for the run itself. But, and so we went to bed with questions and I woke up and I said, you know,

• 14:43Speaker 05

it's because it makes you feel alive.

• 14:47Speaker 05

  I think that's a, that's, there's no simpler answer than that.

• 14:50Speaker 02

  It's beautiful.

• 14:51Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 14:52Speaker 05

Yeah. Um, you guys have any other questions? I can tell you about my toenails. I can tell you about-

• 14:57Speaker 02

Did you lose some? I, I almost lost a toenail during hunting season. I put a toe warmer in my boot and then it flipped around and got on top of my toe, but I didn't want to take it out.

• 15:08Speaker 04

Timeout. It was under your feet?

• 15:10Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 15:11Speaker 04

What? They go on top of your foot?

• 15:13Speaker 05

  No, they don't.

• 15:14Speaker 04

No, bud. Yeah. Top of your toes. Try it. You're walking around with a rolled up-

• 15:21Speaker 05

Listen, I, I know that what you're saying works, but the directions-

• 15:26Speaker 04

  Never read the directions.

• 15:28Speaker 05

  Or the opposite.

• 15:29Speaker 04

  They like go.

• 15:30Speaker 02

  Heat rises, baby.

• 15:31Speaker 04

Yeah, but you certainly feel the heat touching you. Wow, this is new.

• 15:34Speaker 02

I got this bad boy wrapped up around my big toe. And, uh.

• 15:39Speaker 04

  Ouch.

• 15:40Speaker 02

That toenail is still. It filled up with blood.

• 15:44Speaker 05

Let's ask the live, let's ask the live chat. Do you guys go, uh, toe warmers on top or underneath your toes?

• 15:50Speaker 04

  Let's ask Cal.

• 15:51Speaker 05

Well, let's. We'll wait for you guys to get back.

• 15:53Speaker 02

Phil, what do we have? Oh, shit.

• 15:56Speaker 04

  Never mind.

• 15:56Speaker 05

  Yeah, it's a 50 50 split. Crazy. It's settled. Nothing. I'm sorry, Yanis.

• 16:00Speaker 04

  It's 11 15 on a Monday.

• 16:02Speaker 05

So it got in there. You still just hiked your tail off and that little toenail pounded against that toe warmer and that was the end of it.

• 16:10Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah. Um, by the end of the day, I, I was limping pretty good, but I just never wanted to take my boot off. It was real cold.

• 16:17Speaker 05

  Then you lost it completely?

• 16:20Speaker 02

No, no, it just sort of died and I've kind of trimmed it back. To the quick.

• 16:25Speaker 05

  Never lifted off?

• 16:26Speaker 02

Never lifted off, but it was no longer attached. It was just kind of floating.

• 16:30Speaker 04

  Hmm.

• 16:31Speaker 02

So, yeah, it's been a weird one. Still pretty ugly.

• 16:34Speaker 04

  Hmm.

• 16:34Speaker 05

  At this point.

• 16:36Speaker 02

So I'm wearing socks with Crocs today.

• 16:38Speaker 04

  Hey.

• 16:38Speaker 02

So you can't get a peek.

• 16:39Speaker 04

  Fashion statement.

• 16:40Speaker 05

You know what? My kids say you're, these days you're a dork if you go the opposite, which is what I do. I don't like wearing socks with my Crocs, but the kids are like, no, that's the only way to wear Crocs that.

• 16:50Speaker 04

  Hmm.

• 16:50Speaker 05

  So you're in. You're good.

• 16:52Speaker 02

  I love it.

• 16:52Speaker 05

Do you think by looking at my toes, you could tell me if I'm gonna lose the toenail or not?

• 16:57Speaker 04

  Ooh, break them out.

• 16:57Speaker 02

No, I'd have to get in there and wiggle them like a tooth.

• 17:00Speaker 05

Well, they're not loose yet by any means. They just, there's a, just a coloration to them. It's different from my other toenails. And.

• 17:09Speaker 02

  I'm.

• 17:10Speaker 05

I, I think I still might be able to keep them, but everybody looks at them and is like, no, they're gone. You're done.

• 17:15Speaker 04

Hmm. Is this your big toe?

• 17:16Speaker 05

Uh, yeah, both my big toes and then two of the little ones on the right foot.

• 17:21Speaker 04

  Hmm.

• 17:22Speaker 05

They're both looking a little purply.

• 17:24Speaker 04

  You don't need those.

• 17:25Speaker 05

What I'm hoping is that if I'm gonna lose them, I'm gonna lose them before I have to run a hundred miles. Cause if I just don't have toenails there, life will be easy peasy. But if I have like loose, messed up, partially attached, painful toenails, could suck.

• 17:43Speaker 02

Put a little dental floss on them and tie it to a doorknob.

• 17:46Speaker 04

  Ooh, let's go.

• 17:47Speaker 05

Yeah. Did I tell you guys about the fellow that I lion hunted with one day? He's a buddy of Pete's actually.

• 17:53Speaker 02

Did he have his toenails removed?

• 17:54Speaker 05

  Ed, yeah, has his

• 17:56Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 17:56Speaker 05

toenails removed for the sole purpose of sheep hunting.

• 18:00Speaker 04

  Really?

• 18:01Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 18:02Speaker 04

  Had them removed.

• 18:02Speaker 05

  Completely.

• 18:03Speaker 04

  Interesting.

• 18:04Speaker 05

Yeah. He said he thought he was a tough guy and the doctor's like, uh, yeah, we can like maybe do like two, cause he was just gonna go in and be like, take him, take 10, please. Let's get this done. And the doc's like, no, we'll do two and we'll see how it goes. And he's, and afterwards he's like, oh, thank God. Because yeah, I guess when you get your toenails removed, it's not fun.

• 18:26Speaker 02

But then he went back there five more times.

• 18:28Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 18:28Speaker 02

  Huh.

• 18:29Speaker 05

  Yeah, no toenails.

• 18:30Speaker 02

  Ed's hardcore.

• 18:31Speaker 05

  Yeah, no, he's into it.

• 18:33Speaker 02

  Love it.

• 18:35Speaker 05

All right. Well, let's move on from my running. I'll let you boys know how it goes when I'm done with a hundred.

• 18:40Speaker 04

Randall, what do you got going on this summer?

• 18:42Speaker 02

Oh, boy. Are we doing, yeah, I, I guess, uh, well, it's now June 19th. Coming up shortly here, I'm heading across the pond for a little tour of, uh, beer and bratwursts.

• 18:58Speaker 04

  Ooh.

• 18:58Speaker 05

  Lovely.

• 18:59Speaker 04

  Very nice.

• 19:00Speaker 02

  In, uh,

• 19:01Speaker 05

  In Deutschland?

• 19:02Speaker 02

  Deutschland und Österreich.

• 19:04Speaker 05

  Ah.

• 19:05Speaker 02

That's Austria. And I'm just gonna drink a lot of beer and eat a lot of pretzels and do a lot of sampling of local tube meats.

• 19:15Speaker 05

  Oh, that sounds lovely.

• 19:16Speaker 02

  A little bit of walking.

• 19:18Speaker 05

  Hey.

• 19:18Speaker 02

  It's the 10th anniversary trip.

• 19:20Speaker 05

  Oh, nice.

• 19:21Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 19:22Speaker 04

  Good call.

• 19:22Speaker 05

Latvia's not far away. You could take, probably get a hundred dollar flight.

• 19:28Speaker 02

  Hmm.

• 19:28Speaker 05

Then call me when you're over there.

• 19:30Speaker 02

  Are you gonna be there?

• 19:31Speaker 05

I won't be. But, you know, just call him.

• 19:34Speaker 02

  If, if.

• 19:34Speaker 05

Call me back here and say, hey, I made it. Latvia's cool.

• 19:38Speaker 02

If you were gonna be there, I'd extend my trip and make it up there. So we could look for some dog raccoons or whatever they are.

• 19:43Speaker 05

Oh, I can make that happen, buddy. I could make a little raccoon dog trip happen for you. Well, that's awesome. That sounds like a great trip.

• 19:52Speaker 02

And then we're coming back and sort of immediately recording the next Meat Eater American History audiobook, which is no small source of anxiety. Uh, it's gonna be great, but there's a lot of work to do. And then in August, uh, you know, it just depends on how smoky everything is. I'm going to, uh, an event in Ikalaka. The Dino Shin Dig.

• 20:15Speaker 04

  Oh, that looks fun.

• 20:16Speaker 02

At the Carter County Museum. We're gonna go out and dig some dinosaur bones, listen to some dinosaur research, so. Yeah, pretty big summer ahead of me, guys. Pretty big summer.

• 20:25Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 20:26Speaker 05

Is Spencer Newarth going with you to the Dino Shin?

• 20:28Speaker 02

No, he's not. Tickets are limited, so, uh, and, and to go out on the field expedition is a couple hundred bucks, so. I didn't buy Spencer a ticket, long story short. But, yeah, I'm excited.

• 20:41Speaker 04

Well, you'd think he'd love that.

• 20:43Speaker 02

Yeah, I think he wants to go, but, you know, he's more of just a solid rock guy, I think.

• 20:50Speaker 04

When is this? It's like July?

• 20:52Speaker 02

  It's late July, yeah.

• 20:53Speaker 04

  Ikalaka gets hot.

• 20:54Speaker 02

Yeah. Yeah, no, I think it's gonna be very hot.

• 20:58Speaker 04

That'll be fun, though. Phil, what about you?

• 21:00Speaker 06

Oh. Thanks for asking, Corey. I don't have a whole lot going on. Going to the Black Hills with the family. It's our, our short little.

• 21:06Speaker 04

  Hmm.

• 21:07Speaker 06

Short little family vacay this year.

• 21:09Speaker 04

  There you go.

• 21:10Speaker 06

Um, that's pretty much all we've got planned, you know?

• 21:13Speaker 04

  Go see Mount Rushmore?

• 21:14Speaker 06

We are. The kids are excited.

• 21:16Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 21:16Speaker 06

Yeah, they're, they're stoked. So, yeah, it'll be, uh, it'll, it'll be a fun time.

• 21:20Speaker 05

How did you get them fired up on Mount Rushmore?

• 21:22Speaker 06

They just like the idea of Mount Rushmore. I'm sure they, they'll be completely deflated once we actually get there and they see how far away it is, um. And, and how far we had to drive to get there. But for the time being, they're stoked and that's, I'm just gonna hold on to that as long as I can.

• 21:38Speaker 04

Yeah. Think about swinging by Devil's Tower, which is kinda out of the way, but.

• 21:42Speaker 06

I have been thinking about it. Yeah.

• 21:44Speaker 04

  Cam ride underneath it.

• 21:46Speaker 06

And then there's, uh, Teddy Roosevelt National Park too, maybe?

• 21:51Speaker 02

  In North Dakota.

• 21:51Speaker 06

  That's in North.

• 21:52Speaker 04

  Yeah, there's the Badlands.

• 21:53Speaker 02

Yeah. Badlands National Park isn't too far. And, and just the Black Hills State Park is worth the drive. They have a wild ass highway that goes around and around and. It kind of frames, you go through these tunnels built into the rock that frames Mount Rushmore quite nicely. Yeah. Very thoughtfully done.

• 22:11Speaker 06

Yeah, we're actually gonna be staying in the Bad, in the Badlands. So.

• 22:15Speaker 02

  Lovely.

• 22:16Speaker 04

Deadwood is worth a stop too.

• 22:18Speaker 06

Oh, you don't have to tell me. I've already got plans.

• 22:22Steven Rinella?

  Phil, what's the chat saying?

• 22:23Speaker 06

Oh. Oh, it's, it's crazy. Even though we're pre-recording this episode, Mogor is here. I don't know how he found out. Hell yeah.

• 22:30Steven Rinella?

  Shout out Mogor.

• 22:31Speaker 06

Greetings. Uh, thanks for the show. You guys are awesome. Mogor, thanks for being here. It's always good to hear from you.

• 22:36Speaker 02

  19th in Hungary.

• 22:39Steven Rinella?

If you spend a lot of time outdoors, you got dogs, you got kids, you know how hard it is to keep the floor of your rig clean. A thing we do in our, in our little fleet of vehicles that have in my household, if you go look, open the door on any one of them, they all got WeatherTech. We get a car, we throw the mats out and put in WeatherTech. Cause that way when there's a mess, it's like your kid's fault, your dog's fault, it's the weather's fault. Doesn't matter. You take them suckers out and hose them off and you're back to being good as new. I'm telling you, if you got a vehicle, put WeatherTech in there. You're gonna be happy you did it. And check this out. American made floor liners and cargo liners. Okay. They laugh in the face of all weather. Go take a look for yourself today at weather tech.com.

• 23:18Steven Rinella?

I'm holding in my hot little hand here, the, uh, first ever folding knife from Montana Knife Company. Dude, this thing is sweet. They like reimagined folding knives. You touch this thing and you know, you are holding a quality product. Montana Knife Company founded by Josh Smith, one of the most experienced master bladesmiths in the world. The Montana is the first folder Josh has built at production scale with a team of engineers and machinists who could match what he does on the bench. G10 scales with the 3D milled micro texture, titanium hardware, a custom deep carry clip with flathead screws set flush. This is a rock solid clip.

• 24:03Steven Rinella?

It's not the kind of clip that you're going to use a couple of times and it bends and get all loose. The blade goes back into the mill after heat treatment for its most critical surfaces. That's the kind of step nobody else takes. That same standard applies to every part of the Montana. That's the name of the folder, the Montana, from start to finish. The wait is over and I've been waiting a long time to get one of these suckers. MKC launching their first folding knife. It's dropping extremely soon, so make sure you sign up for email and SMS to be the first to know. These are going to sell out quick. Head to MKC.com today. That's MKC.com. This episode of the Meat Eater Podcast is brought to you in part by Bobcat. Now, this country was founded on the belief that we should keep pushing our limits and

• 24:48Steven Rinella?

doing things that have never been done before. From landing on the moon to building the Brooklyn Bridge, we don't stop to wonder why, we just ask how. Now, Bobcat was built on that same philosophy. They started the compact equipment industry through grit, determination, and a whole lot of think we can't do that? Well, watch us. They set standards, broke records, empowered people to build bigger and higher, to dig deeper, to make the impossible possible. It's no surprise they demand the best from their products. For the people who demand the best for themselves, after all, real work isn't about building a resume. It's about building your legacy. We've all been there with doubters telling us what we can't do.

• 25:33Steven Rinella?

Who cares what they think? We don't need their permission or forgiveness. We just get things done. So, go ahead and doubt me, judge me, challenge me, but when the time comes, watch me. That's Bobcat.

• 25:47Speaker 02

Should we move on to some questions?

• 25:48Speaker 04

  Well, gosh.

• 25:49Speaker 02

  Let's do it.

• 25:49Speaker 05

Well, that or comments. I don't know which one you want to do first. Or we can split. We can do a little bit of one and then bounce back and forth.

• 25:56Speaker 02

Let's, we can bounce back and forth a little bit.

• 25:58Speaker 04

  Down here.

• 26:00Speaker 02

Let's begin with this question from Michael M. Michael M. writes, "I've recently been gifted two shotguns by my father-in-law, who is handicapped and can no longer hunt. Inspired by this gesture and eager to connect with nature, I am determined to embark on my hunting journey. However, as a newcomer, I find the most daunting challenge is locating accessible land to hunt on. I would greatly appreciate any advice or resources you could share on how to find hunting land in general. Additionally, if there are any local programs, public lands, or community initiatives that facilitate land access for new hunters, I would be eager to learn more."

• 26:37Speaker 04

  Great question.

• 26:40Speaker 02

Who wants to start here? Yanis?

• 26:42Speaker 05

Well, it's almost as if this question was sent in under a pseudonym.

• 26:50Speaker 02

No, this is a genuine email.

• 26:52Speaker 05

I know, but I'm asking if pseudonym is the right term. I'm using like a fake name.

• 26:57Speaker 04

  No, that's the real deal.

• 26:58Speaker 02

But that is, that is the real name.

• 27:00Speaker 05

I know, but I'm asking you if my vocabulary is correct.

• 27:04Speaker 02

  Yeah, pseudonym is, is a...

• 27:05Speaker 05

  Thank you.

• 27:06Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 27:06Speaker 05

  As if someone from Onyx.

• 27:08Speaker 02

Oh, oh, I see. I see.

• 27:10Speaker 05

Under a pseudonym of Michael M.

• 27:13Speaker 02

I thought you were accusing Corey of making up this question.

• 27:16Speaker 05

Oh, like some of the other ones.

• 27:18Speaker 04

  No.

• 27:18Speaker 05

  No.

• 27:19Speaker 04

  Get out of here.

• 27:20Speaker 05

Um, but Michael, it's very easy. Get yourself a smartphone, download yourself some Onyx, find yourself on that map, and then turn on a layer of, uh, public lands, and it will literally light up on your map of all the available public lands. And then usually you can click on said lands and find out more information about it. And maybe even what you can, can't hunt there. And then there's usually links to hunting regulations and so on and so forth. That would be my one.

• 27:59Speaker 05

Piece of advice. Um, I don't know about, uh, any initiatives that facilitate land access for new hunters, but I would say that, uh, you could go to sharing the land that our buddy Doug Durner runs and, um, see if they might have some stuff going on, which is basically a, uh, cooperative where they find willing landowners that, uh, want to give some access. They come, they set them up with, uh, people like you that are looking to hunt and, and willing to do a little bit of work to get access to that land. And it's a great program. So there's stuff like that out there. Um, if that still doesn't work, send some letters and go door knocking.

• 28:44Speaker 02

I would, I would add to that. Uh, get involved in like your local BHA chapter.

• 28:51Speaker 05

  That's what I was thinking.

• 28:51Speaker 02

Talk to make some friends who are in the same boat and then also reach out to your local, uh, or your state fish and game office because those, most of those agencies have access programs, uh, whether it's like, you know, the public lands that they manage directly or private lands that they help administer public access to. And, um, oftentimes they have like staffers who are specifically working on access issues. So, uh, it's their job and, and that's what they want to do is connect people with places to hunt. So don't be afraid to reach out to fish and game and, and, uh, see what they have going on.

• 29:31Speaker 05

Yeah. You took the words right out of my mouth. I was also thinking, if you have a local sporting goods store, go check out the bulletin board down there and see if there's any group get togethers or some sort of event that you can.

• 29:43Speaker 02

  Yeah. Fundraisers, things like that.

• 29:44Speaker 05

Yep. Try mingling any local banquets.

• 29:47Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 29:47Speaker 05

  unlimited.

• 29:48Speaker 02

I know at least, um, in some states, there are organizations where you can go do boots on the ground conservation work, like outside of BHA, you know, there's like organizations that are doing local projects. If you have like a. You know, like a local sportsman's group that's helping pull fence or whatever else go get involved in that stuff. And people are more likely to extend an invite to you if they see that you're invested in it and out there in the world doing, doing good work.

• 30:16Speaker 05

Yeah, and there's a very good chance that the work you'll be doing will be on land that you can go hunt.

• 30:23Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 30:23Speaker 05

All right. I wish we knew what state Michael M. was in, but oh, well, let's go on to, how do you pronounce this next one, Randall?

• 30:30Speaker 02

Uh, Gibron T. I think this is a pseudonym from Corey.

• 30:35Speaker 04

  Gibron, Gibron.

• 30:37Speaker 02

Gibron writes, "I'll be hunting archery elk in Idaho for the first time this fall. What should I be doing to prepare as an elk caller in the off season? And to answer this question, here's Mr. Jason Phelps."

• 30:52Speaker 07

One of the most asked questions we get this time of the year is, what should I be doing as a caller in the off season to, to improve my chances for success, uh, come September? My short answer is always, you just need to have the confidence to be able to call in September. Uh, one of those biggest hurdles is you're out there, you're interacting with elk, you're on the elk, and you're just afraid to call. Um, yeah, there are a lot of situations where maybe calling is not the best answer, the best solution, um, to find success, but there are a lot of situations where calling, um, will bring that bull into the archery range and, and be the thing that, that does matter. So how do you build that confidence? It's practicing right now in the off season. Now, I'm not going to get into like making perfect cow calls, how you make those, that's difficult. We got YouTube videos, um, for

• 31:35Speaker 07

that, uh, you know, go search those up. But I relate this a lot to playing basketball. The game, uh, is where you get to show off how good you are. Practice is what makes you and builds how good you are. It's the same thing, um, with archery elk hunting and calling. We don't get enough reps out in the field during September to become good. Um, you need to do that in the off season. You need to have enough practice that you're confident when you go to blow a call. You know exactly how that call is going to react. You know exactly how to repeat the call that you want. You know how to make this sound, a cow mew, an estrus wine, a challenge beagle, a, a lip ball, whatever it may be. You did enough practice that you're. Muscle memory, you can go out and make that call. Um, so how do you do that? Like ideally, we recommend offseason, everybody goes back to a diaphragm and tube combo.

• 32:20Speaker 07

Try to get that diaphragm to work if possible. It allows you to be hands free as an archer, as a muzzleloader hunter, so that you have control over your weapon while you're making calls. If that doesn't work, you know, you got gag reflex, or for some reason, you just can't get the hang of it. Um, we have designed some calls like the easy asterisk, easy one, um, easy sucker on the cow call side to kind of cut that learning curve down. We've also, um, designed the easy beagle on the beagle tube side, which attaches to a lot of our new beagle tubes to, to, to just make that process easier. And hopefully build your confidence, but whatever it is this offseason, find something that builds confidence for you so that when it comes time to, to the big show in September, you're willing to make a call when needed, um, to help your chances to bring that bull into range.

• 33:05Speaker 04

Well said. Oh, gets me excited. Let's go.

• 33:08Speaker 05

It's like that guy thinks about calling a lot or something.

• 33:11Speaker 02

I was gonna say, I don't really have much to add to that.

• 33:15Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 33:15Speaker 02

Before, before we move on to our next question.

• 33:17Speaker 05

I was gonna add, can I add something?

• 33:19Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, please, please.

• 33:20Speaker 05

  Why is that funny?

• 33:22Speaker 02

No, we're just out of sync today. It's, you know, it's being Monday.

• 33:26Speaker 05

Oh, you think that's what it is?

• 33:27Speaker 02

  I think that's.

• 33:28Speaker 06

The pressure of being live, you know, it, it provides a little bit more energy, you know, we, and I think the fact that we're, it's a, that it's, it's 3:30 on a Monday.

• 33:37Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 33:39Speaker 04

  Could be.

• 33:39Speaker 06

But we gotta, we gotta remember, boys, we've got an audience. They might be, they might not be watching now, but they're out there.

• 33:45Speaker 02

  I know, I know.

• 33:46Speaker 05

Please add, add. I might, I might be just a little bit low T because I'm drained from Saturday. So, sorry, audience.

• 33:54Speaker 02

But do you have stuff to add to the calling thing?

• 33:57Speaker 05

  Yes, I do.

• 33:59Speaker 06

Like the best, the best podcast apologize for themselves halfway through.

• 34:03Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 34:04Speaker 05

What I, what I like to do, don't look at me with those deer lost in the headlights.

• 34:09Speaker 02

No, I just was looking at my face on the screen and my face is really red.

• 34:16Speaker 04

  Looks good.

• 34:17Speaker 02

Deep red. Look at my hand.

• 34:20Speaker 04

  Cincinnati red.

• 34:21Speaker 02

  Awful. Go ahead, please.

• 34:23Speaker 05

Um, Jason's talking about calling a lot and I fall in this trap too. It's like, I don't put enough reps in and I try to get, get plenty of summertime reps in with my calls, but I used to, I like to always practice. It's easy to have that call in your mouth for 10 minutes and have already tried to have blown 50 cow calls and to then produce a good one. It's much harder when your mouth is dry and you just put one in and you gotta make one soft mew. So I always try to practice that. It's kinda like doing a cold barrel first shot, right? Like that's the one you're killing the animal with.

• 34:58Speaker 02

  Cold bore challenge.

• 34:59Speaker 05

Cold bore challenge, right? Same thing here. Dry diaphragm challenge. Chuck it in there, do whatever you gotta do with your saliva to get it ready. It moist, get it in the right spot and see if you can just make that one perfect cow mew. That'll give you that confidence he was talking about.

• 35:15Speaker 04

Yeah. How about when you're physically prepping for elk hunting, when you're climbing a mountain with a ruck pack on or whatever?

• 35:21Speaker 02

You wanna get into this next question here, huh?

• 35:24Speaker 04

Oh, well, no, not necessarily. Here's another one for you though. Another idea is, uh, while you're shooting your bow, have a diaphragm in your mouth. Yanni, how many times have you tried stopping an elk at full draw with a some sort of noise? Cow call works really well.

• 35:41Speaker 05

  I haven't, um.

• 35:42Speaker 04

  But it is one.

• 35:43Speaker 05

I would probably just give him the old, "Man, look up here."

• 35:47Speaker 04

Yeah, but it's nice to have a diaphragm in your mouth while you're shooting. So that, try it. It's good practice. Try it all.

• 35:54Speaker 02

Well, speaking of preparation, and then after this, maybe we could hit a comment or two.

• 36:00Speaker 05

  Please.

• 36:00Speaker 02

Um, speaking of preparation, our next question comes to us from Adam B. "I went a doll sheep hunt at a local wild sheep fundraiser."

• 36:08Speaker 04

  Congrats.

• 36:09Speaker 02

Congrats. We're all happy for you. "I've been doing a fair bit of hiking with a weighted pack, but where I live is flatter than a pancake. Do you have any pointers for me to help get in sheep shape before my August hunt?"

• 36:22Speaker 04

  Sheep shape.

• 36:24Speaker 05

This guy must live in Manitoba where I just was. It's flat there, buddy.

• 36:28Speaker 04

  Or Kansas.

• 36:29Speaker 02

To answer this question, here's Rich Froning.

• 36:34Speaker 07

Is I want a doll sheep hunted a local wild sheep fundraiser. I've been doing a fair bit of hiking with a weighted pack. But where I live is flatter than a pancake.

• 36:43Speaker 02

No, no, Phil, can we cut that?

• 36:44Speaker 07

For me to help get in sheep shape before my August hunt. Yes, several things. Uh, use that ruck. You can step up to a cooler if you have a box, if you have a stadium nearby where you can uh, get on some stairs. You can throw in some squats. You can throw in some lunges. You can do some type of intervals where uh, maybe you run, run ruck, um, pop down, do some burpees with the thing. But the more you can move that weight in different ranges of motion. We like the squat. We like a lunge. Um, once again, stepping forward on a cooler, doing lateral stepovers on a cooler. Uh, there's all kinds of different movements you can do, but you're going to need to lead, build up that leg strength.

• 37:29Speaker 07

And, uh, good luck in August.

• 37:33Speaker 04

  Nice. Wow.

• 37:36Speaker 02

Anything to add to that? Go out and run a hundred miles?

• 37:40Speaker 05

That'll do it. Yeah. But if it's a flat hundred, you're still going to be hurting.

• 37:46Speaker 02

  Yeah, there's really nothing that

• 37:50Speaker 02

compares to just stepping up on things.

• 37:52Speaker 05

  Yeah, that's right.

• 37:53Speaker 04

Man, being that you won this hunt, once in a lifetime type thing, most likely, maybe plan on making a trip out to Colorado and go for a hike or two.

• 38:02Speaker 04

Maybe a couple of weeks before your hunt.

• 38:03Speaker 05

That's right. If he's, if he's not paying for anything, he should fly out to some high country and, uh, do some mega hiking. That's a great idea.

• 38:10Speaker 04

Definitely try and get up to the elevation and yeah, put a pack on. I mean, you can work on a, step on a cooler all day long, but nothing gets you trained in the mountains more than just being in the mountains.

• 38:22Speaker 05

Yeah. Make sure you got some sheep feet trained up too.

• 38:26Speaker 02

And it's nice because he knows when he's going sheep hunting. So he knows when he can stop working out. See, the rest of us

• 38:35Speaker 02

are all sort of like floating around here, waiting for the sheep hunt, but he has a finish line in sight of when he can just go back to being a total slob.

• 38:44Speaker 04

  After the hunt.

• 38:45Speaker 02

  Yeah, exactly.

• 38:46Speaker 04

Right? Just let her all hang.

• 38:47Speaker 02

Yeah, just suffer, suffer for a couple of months. You won't regret it.

• 38:50Speaker 04

  Good question.

• 38:52Speaker 02

You honest, do you have any, uh, any comments here? These, this is our stand in for comments from the chat. It's a new, uh, new thing we're doing on not live media to radio live.

• 39:04Speaker 05

Um, we recently have done a new, it's not a new series. We have, we've added some episodes to this series, Meteor Experiences. We did, uh, What It Takes To Lose Zero. We did one called The Brush Gun. Uh, have we released anything else yet?

• 39:21Speaker 02

  The 277 Fury.

• 39:23Speaker 05

Oh, right. The 277 Fury, where Randall basically told us about the 277 Fury and then we took that cartridge and shot a lot of, a bunch of, a bunch of different mediums in super slow motion, which was fun.

• 39:36Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 39:37Speaker 05

But, we didn't do it wrong, according to a lot of these comments here on YouTube. Eric8851 says, "You all missed the point of a brush gun. It's to carry, walk and hunt in the brush, not," I think he missed the word, "shoot," through brush. "Short, light, easy to get on target, no glass, 30, 30, 45, 70, 44 mag, 357. See a theme here? Southeast hunter here. Wood so thick, 30 yards is a long shot at time. Guns at bow range, hunting clear cut timber lots."

• 40:13Speaker 02

So you did get it wrong.

• 40:15Speaker 05

Great point. Yeah, which, um, I, I think that we spoke to that in our brush gun video.

• 40:21Speaker 02

Yeah, there are multiple definitions of the term.

• 40:23Speaker 05

And that, um, not only is it, uh, meant to be able to be, um, the gun easily manipulated in brush country, but that the bullet has to be, has to perform well in the brush. I'm not going to tell you the outcome of our brush gun video. Go watch it.

• 40:41Speaker 02

I've got one here that's sort of long, similar lines. It reads, um, "Shut up, Randall. Randall's getting a little more annoying every episode." Here's another one. "Dr. Randall is insufferable. I mute it when he opens his mouth. Good thing the questions were posted at the bottom of the screen. It's obvious he's trying to win the who can be most in love with himself contest that nobody asked for." And then one more here, um, let's find a good one here.

• 41:08Speaker 05

  Get a positive one, eh?

• 41:09Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 41:12Speaker 02

  Um.

• 41:14Speaker 06

Or, you know, it doesn't have to be positive as long as it's insightful.

• 41:16Speaker 02

  Randall, what an idiot.

• 41:18Speaker 06

  Okay, yeah.

• 41:19Speaker 02

Randall, classic me generation not getting what they deserve. Here's another, what an idiot, Dr. Randall. Should we go back to questions?

• 41:27Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 41:27Speaker 05

I don't understand why they, why they don't like you. Um, is it because you are the smartest guy in the room? And they just gotta, they just gotta try to take down.

• 41:35Speaker 02

  No, it's because I'm conceited. It's because I'm conceited.

• 41:40Speaker 04

  They hate you.

• 41:41Speaker 02

  They see right through me.

• 41:42Speaker 04

  Cause they ain't you.

• 41:43Speaker 02

They know what I'm thinking and what I think of myself.

• 41:48Speaker 04

  Well, don't read those comments.

• 41:49Speaker 02

We got another question here. This one comes, Phil, I got you with that transition. Got another question here. This is from, uh, Meat Eater Trivia All-Star question submitter, Leland Hart.

• 42:00Speaker 04

  Hey.

• 42:01Speaker 02

He says, I, I lead a local conservation group. I'm always talking up hunting and angling to people I meet. For some reason, this appears to make me a magnet for people telling me about how they've broken game laws. It's happened at least three times. Poachers apparently see my BHA and Meat Eater merch and think, I'm going to tell this guy about unlicensed night hunting in a day hunting only state. For game out of season. Or let me tell you how I pulled a fast one by hunting against regulations and got away with it. How would the Meat Eater team deal with confessions of wrongdoing told to you in earnest? And to answer this question.

• 42:36Speaker 02

  Here's Chester Floyd.

• 42:37Speaker 04

  Oh, yes.

• 42:38Speaker 07

Buddy Chester Floyd here, coming at you from Wisconsin.

• 42:42Speaker 02

  It's a bad camera angle.

• 42:43Speaker 07

And I've got another Cheddar Kit for you. This week's Cheddar Kit comes to us from Leland Hart. Leland writes in.

• 42:49Speaker 02

What the hell is going on with this?

• 42:52Speaker 04

  Who's the producer here?

• 42:53Speaker 07

I have a Cheddar Kit question. I'm a proud hunter, angler and outdoorsman.

• 42:58Speaker 06

But while he's reading this question, we'll just talk about how giant his guitar looks.

• 43:02Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 43:03Speaker 04

Look how blue the sky is.

• 43:04Speaker 07

And I'm always talking up hunting and angling with the people I meet.

• 43:09Speaker 07

For some reason, this appears to make me.

• 43:11Speaker 06

  Oh, that's fine.

• 43:12Speaker 07

A magnet for people to tell me about how they've broken.

• 43:14Speaker 02

And now they're gonna know. Now they're gonna know that I read an abbreviated version of the question.

• 43:19Speaker 07

  Poachers apparently see my BHA.

• 43:22Speaker 06

  Guys, everything's going fine.

• 43:23Speaker 02

  So this wasn't a clunky Q and A.

• 43:24Speaker 07

  About unlicensed night hunting.

• 43:27Speaker 04

  Oh, this dog.

• 43:27Speaker 07

In a day hunting only state for game that's out of. Season and I don't have a tag for anyways.

• 43:33Speaker 06

  God, I miss Chester.

• 43:34Speaker 07

In quotes, let me tell you how I pulled a fast one by hunting against regulations on a military base and got away with a trespassing citation.

• 43:45Speaker 06

I'm kinda glad he's gone because his songs are so much better than mine.

• 43:48Speaker 07

  Instead of any real consequences.

• 43:48Speaker 06

And so I, I get to be the standout.

• 43:52Speaker 07

I tried to make this an educational moment when it happens. At least one of the people was just ignorant of the law. The others seemed oddly proud of their misbehavior. I didn't hear anything actionable by law enforcement, just historical. I did this a while ago stuff. Obviously, if I anticipated a crime, I would report it, but it is a weird spot to be in. How would the Meat Eater team deal with confessions of wrongdoing told to you in earnest?

• 44:37Speaker 07

Down in Fort Gujuca's redneck crowd pulled all kinds of people good and sound, except a couple of boys who were up to no good, causing all kinds of trouble in the hood. Feeling you're an approachable guy, that's why all the boys will spare the poaching cries, sitting here thinking on what you must do about bad confessions told to you. Like I pulled a fast one on the neighbor's place and I pulled a fast one on the military

• 45:21Speaker 07

base and I pulled a fast one. I thought you should know and I pulled a fast one. Call me no good, Joe.

• 45:45Speaker 06

  Excellent camera work.

• 45:47Speaker 02

Yeah. You can feel the emotion when he sings.

• 46:19Speaker 06

  Isn't this memorized?

• 46:21Speaker 04

  I think so.

• 46:22Speaker 06

  This is insane.

• 46:22Speaker 04

  I know.

• 46:24Speaker 02

Maybe it's written on the top of his guitar.

• 46:26Speaker 04

  That's why it's so big.

• 46:37Speaker 04

Should we erase? A question? To shorten this up? I gotta go somewhere important.

• 46:42Speaker 06

Hey Cory, everyone can hear you talking right now.

• 46:44Speaker 04

  Are you serious?

• 46:45Speaker 06

  Yes.

• 46:53Speaker 07

I hope you liked that little song and hopefully it gave you a little bit of

• 47:00Speaker 07

ideas on what to do, but I think teaching people and making it an educational moment, really letting them know like, "What the heck dude? Like, you cannot do that stuff and that's gonna come back to burn you and why are you telling me this? But, if somebody has done something like crazy bad, which these guys have, but like, just insane, like, you've gotta report it to the DNR. Uh, they're in a bar drinking and stuff in this circumstance, so I'm not quite sure, you know, how truthful this is, but it's really, use your best judgment, make-

• 47:37Speaker 04

Get educational, let them know that they have done wrong.

• 47:43Speaker 04

  Well said.

• 47:44Speaker 02

  Hmm.

• 47:44Speaker 04

  Well done, man.

• 47:47Speaker 02

What do you guys think? Hell, dude. Anything to add to old Chesterro?

• 47:52Speaker 04

Can't top that, but he's right.

• 47:56Speaker 02

  Giannis?

• 47:58Speaker 05

Uh, no, yeah, I would, uh, I would not worry about keeping them as friends and just, uh, and get right in their face. Let them know what's up.

• 48:06Speaker 02

  Hmm.

• 48:07Speaker 04

  Wrong is wrong.

• 48:08Speaker 02

  Tough love.

• 48:09Speaker 04

  Tough love, baby.

• 48:12Steven Rinella?

If you spend a lot of time outdoors, you got dogs, you got kids, you know how hard it is to keep the floor of your rig clean. A thing we do in our, in our little fleet of vehicles that have at my household, if you go look, open the door on any one of them, they all got WeatherTech. We get a car, we throw the mats out and put in WeatherTech. Cause that way, when there's a mess, it's like your kid's fault, your dog's fault, it's the weather's fault, doesn't matter. You take them suckers out and hose them off and you're back to being good as new. I'm telling you, if you got a vehicle, put WeatherTech in there, you're gonna be happy you did it. And check this out, American made floor liners and cargo liners, okay? They laugh in the face of all weather. Go take a look for yourself today at weather tech.com.

• 48:52Steven Rinella?

I'm holding in my hot little hand here, the, uh, first ever folding knife from Montana Knife Company. Dude, this thing is sweet. They like reimagined folding knives. You touch this thing and you know, you are holding a quality product. Montana Knife Company founded by Josh Smith, one of the most experienced master bladesmiths in the world. The Montana is the first folder Josh has built at production scale with a team of engineers and machinists who could match what he does on the bench. G10 scales with the 3D milled micro texture, titanium hardware, a custom deep carry clip with flathead screws set flush.

• 49:35Steven Rinella?

This is a rock solid clip. It's not the kind of clip that you're gonna use a couple of times and it bends and get all loose.

• 50:18Steven Rinella?

Now, this country was founded on the belief that we should keep pushing our limits and doing things that have never been done before. From landing on the moon to building the Brooklyn Bridge. We don't stop to wonder why, we just ask how. For the people who demand the best for themselves. After all, real work isn't about building a resume. It's about building your legacy.

• 51:03Steven Rinella?

We've all been there with doubters telling us what we can't do. Who cares what they think? We don't need their permission or forgiveness. We just get things done. So go ahead and doubt me, judge me, challenge me. But when the time comes, watch me. That's Bobcat.

• 51:20Speaker 05

You had some more funny comments for me?

• 51:23Speaker 02

You know, I've got another one here.

• 51:28Speaker 02

Randall looks nothing like he sounds. I would have guessed an old gray haired man with glasses in his late 60s. There's another one.

• 51:37Speaker 02

I figured he, based off Randall's voice, I figured he was 25 years older than he appears to be. That's whack. Everyone says, uh, "Sorry, Randall, you're not a doctor, just a nerd with a degree."

• 51:49Speaker 04

Ooh, that stings a little, eh?

• 51:51Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, so, uh, I don't know.

• 51:55Speaker 05

I, I, let's do a little compliment sandwich here. "Hey, Yanis, I thoroughly enjoy when you host radio, radio, Meat Eater Radio Live."

• 52:04Speaker 06

  The compliment's about you, not...

• 52:06Speaker 05

"It reminds me of old Meat Eater." I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the way Meat Eater is now, but when you host, it has a very like, "Hey, man, we did this. It was awesome. You should try this." Feel to it. Anyway, keep being awesome. Does that make you feel any better?

• 52:22Speaker 02

No, because I think they're comparing it to... Not that there's anything wrong with the new Meat Eater where they talk about Bennigan's, but I think that's the new Meat Eater. I don't know. Maybe that's just more conceited talk on my part.

• 52:40Speaker 05

  Don't be so conceited.

• 52:42Speaker 02

Um, Corey, you want to... How many questions we got left on the list here?

• 52:46Speaker 04

Oh, gosh, um, what do we got? One, two, three, got a few more.

• 52:50Speaker 02

No, I was wondering how many you wanted me to read from.

• 52:53Speaker 04

Oh, well, I think we got a little bit of time.

• 52:55Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah. How about, how about this one? Uh, should I read the question or just play the video?

• 53:00Speaker 06

How about we just play the video?

• 53:02Speaker 02

  Let's play the video, Phil.

• 53:03Speaker 06

And with our luck, it's going to be the one video where they don't read the question first, but let's find out.

• 53:07Speaker 02

Here's Tyler Jones. The question is, "How do I scout for bugs?" Nailed it. "For shooting those bugs in the first three weeks of October? I have no major ag food sources. Instead, it's oak trees." There's two ways that I could look at this and do most of the time. And let's break it down into the first two weeks, which are going to be more patternable stages of a deer's life. And then that last week of the three-week span in October, you're getting towards the middle of October and into the twenties, and deer get a little more pre-rut, a little more testosterone increase there. So, we'll talk about those in that order. The first section, the patternable deer. These deer are not going to move super far. They're going to be near bedding, so thick areas. And then they're going to be feeding on oaks in close proximity.

• 53:51Speaker 02

Not moving a ton in the daylight usually. It makes them pretty tough. Trail cameras are a big part of finding these deer before this moment actually happens, right? So August, September, getting trail cameras out near thick bedding where there's oak trees. Um, another thing you can do is when you actually go in to hunt is listen carefully because we're looking for the first oak trees to start dropping, which doesn't happen at the first of October sometimes, depending on the year. So we're looking to hopefully get those deer that are moving to the same sound that we're hearing in the woods, which is acorns dropping and getting under those first few trees. The second part of this is the rut or pre-rut rather, but rut-like movement where we get into a pinch point

• 54:35Speaker 02

near a scrape and that's a situation I like a lot. In fact, in 2020, I killed a deer on the 23rd of October, just outside that window. But he had showed up on a scrape for the first time on this trail camera on the 16th. So as we get cold weather in that third week, we're looking to shoot deer near scrapes in pinch points, banking on the fact that they're moving just a little bit more before dark. Hope this helps.

• 55:01Speaker 05

  Thanks for that great answer.

• 55:03Speaker 02

  Thank you, Tyler.

• 55:05Speaker 04

And I was distracted by all the awesome taxidermy behind him. Wonder if he's in his house or if he's at a.

• 55:11Speaker 05

Yeah, it looks like a garage, maybe.

• 55:14Speaker 05

He's killed a lot of bucks and those boys like to do taxidermy.

• 55:19Speaker 02

Yes, they do. I'm about to go pick up a little piece of taxidermy this weekend.

• 55:23Speaker 05

  Tell us about it.

• 55:24Speaker 02

It's a, uh, shoulder mount of that bear I killed in Alaska two years ago.

• 55:30Speaker 04

Oh, nice. Another shoulder mounted bear. Cool.

• 55:32Speaker 02

Yeah. Well, the other shoulder mounted bears in Chili's office.

• 55:35Speaker 04

Yeah, it's more of a neck mount too.

• 55:37Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 55:38Speaker 05

Is yours gonna be, I actually have come to like those neck mounts. I saw some in Canada when I was up there. Now I'm coming to like them because I like them because they're manageable and they're small.

• 55:48Speaker 02

I already have a big bear rug on the wall. Don't really have room for another one.

• 55:52Speaker 05

Well, you should take it down and put it on the floor.

• 55:54Speaker 02

This is a wall pedestal, so it incorporates more of the sternum and chest. So it'll be coming out of the wall and you know, it's sort of, it looks more like a, like a mound of deer where you get some of that, some, because some of the bear neck mounts, they just look like you stuck it on the wall.

• 56:13Speaker 04

  Arms included?

• 56:15Speaker 02

  No, no, no.

• 56:18Speaker 02

But I'm still excited at a big noggin. So what I really wanted to look at and remember was the size of its head. And I saw a photo of it and it looks pretty spot on when I compare it to the photos from

• 56:29Speaker 06

  Would that run you?

• 56:32Speaker 02

Do I want to talk numbers?

• 56:34Speaker 06

Does your wife listen to the show?

• 56:35Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 56:36Speaker 06

  Oh, that's, it's not bad.

• 56:39Speaker 02

Yeah. Yeah. I thought it was reasonable.

• 56:42Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 56:43Speaker 02

But that's also why I don't do any other taxidermy.

• 56:50Speaker 05

  It's expensive, man.

• 56:51Speaker 02

  It is.

• 56:51Speaker 05

I always said I'd rather go on another hunt than get a, get a buck mounted. All right. Can we ask the beer drinking question now?

• 57:01Speaker 02

Yeah, sure. Travis T, and this actually is a real one. Why do I feel like everybody off camera is drinking beers and why are they hiding it?

• 57:11Speaker 05

This was a question on a, on a meteor roast episode. That was Phil cracking a beer. He's not hiding it. We don't hide it. Who, do you want to take this? You want me to take it?

• 57:22Speaker 02

  Why don't you take it?

• 57:23Speaker 05

  I'll start.

• 57:24Speaker 02

  You feel inspired.

• 57:29Speaker 05

Nobody off camera is drinking beers. Uh, anybody off camera is working. So they're, they're, they're not drinking beers. In the rare cases that we are, uh, drinking beers and there is some sort of video recording going on. It's usually towards the end of the day. Um, maybe, uh, your roast episode is a

• 57:52Speaker 02

  It's a glaring exception.

• 57:54Speaker 05

Yeah, an anomaly. But, uh, for the most part, the cameras are put away, the day's wrapped up, we're not working anymore. We're relaxing, but something still funny happens or whatever, and we get a phone out and it's recorded.

• 58:10Speaker 05

Cause I, I've gotten that a lot too, where they're just like, man, you're so fired up and happy. You must be drinking beers. Um, I'm not. Not drinking beers on camera.

• 58:21Speaker 06

Also that can I just crack was a sparkling juice drink.

• 58:26Speaker 02

That's because I drank all the beers.

• 58:30Speaker 02

What do you say to that Cory? You've been on some production sets now recently in the last year in your new role?

• 58:37Speaker 04

Yeah, I can't say I ever saw open container while we were working. But afterwards now, because you gotta work hard, you gotta play hard.

• 58:47Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 58:48Speaker 04

I feel like we cracked a couple of cold ones afterwards, but yeah, never during.

• 58:53Speaker 02

Yep. Nothing to add Randall? Randall's not hiding it as you guys can see.

• 59:00Speaker 06

And also, I'm not being holier than thou at my previous job. Uh, the office was attached to a brewery. And they had a deal with them that I got a free beer every day. And on Thursdays, we got three free beers.

• 59:14Speaker 02

  What?

• 59:14Speaker 06

Not, not every, every Thursday, the first Thursday of every month, we got three free beers.

• 59:18Speaker 04

  Thirsty Thursday.

• 59:19Speaker 06

So, but, and I also worked the graveyard shift, so I would start off my shift by drinking a double IPA and then go edit audio for eight hours. And then on Thursdays, the first Thursdays, I mean, I don't know how I got worked up, but I did.

• 59:33Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 59:34Speaker 06

  I was good at it.

• 59:35Speaker 02

I worked, I worked across the tracks from that same brewery Phil. I didn't get any free beers.

• 59:41Speaker 06

I'm sorry, I missed that brewery, I was thinking about.

• 59:43Speaker 02

But I did go there a lot.

• 59:45Speaker 06

Good stuff. Shout out to DraftKings in Missoula.

• 59:48Speaker 02

Oh buddy, I've never been to their brewery, but I sure, I sure do like their beer. Yeah, home away from home. Away from home.

• 59:56Speaker 06

  Love it.

• 1:00:00Speaker 02

We got another question here. Uh, that goes to Jordan Budd, and I don't know if she's repeated the question, so I'll just say, play the tape Phil.

• 1:00:10Speaker 05

Got a question from Cameron Bokoff.

• 1:00:12Speaker 02

  Nice.

• 1:00:13Speaker 05

And he just bought his first whitetail tag and wants to know what are some must haves for first whitetail hunt? So, what I would suggest more than anything tangible is shoot whatever weapon that you're going to use. Um, become super, super proficient with that. Um, in the end, that's what it's going to come down to and it's going to probably happen pretty quick. So, being proficient and comfortable with whatever you're using is probably the most important. Um, beyond that, whitetail is a pretty stationary sport. So I'll get some good clothes to be able to sit longer. So that's what I got for him.

• 1:00:53Speaker 05

Top notch advice from a whitetail outfitter.

• 1:00:56Speaker 02

  Let me add to that.

• 1:00:58Speaker 05

  Please.

• 1:00:58Speaker 02

  A safety harness.

• 1:01:00Speaker 05

  Hmm. That's a good one.

• 1:01:03Speaker 04

  If in a tree.

• 1:01:04Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:01:06Speaker 04

  Safety first.

• 1:01:07Speaker 02

Don't go climbing trees without safety harnesses, folks.

• 1:01:10Speaker 05

Mm hmm. And these, these days, they have the lifelines as well.

• 1:01:17Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:01:17Speaker 05

It's basically a static rope that's attached above your tree stand and at the base. And so that you where you're attached the whole time while you're climbing.

• 1:01:26Speaker 02

  Mm hmm.

• 1:01:29Speaker 05

Must have pieces of gear for his first whitetail hunt. Hmm.

• 1:01:34Speaker 02

If you'd asked nineteen year old Randall, I would have told you three bottles of scent killer.

• 1:01:41Speaker 05

Yeah, I don't really believe in that too much either. Must have pieces of gear for his first whitetail hunt.

• 1:01:50Speaker 05

Man, it's so varied. I don't have no idea where his hunt's gonna be, how cold he's gonna be.

• 1:01:56Speaker 02

  Yeah, I mean.

• 1:01:56Speaker 05

  How hot he's gonna be.

• 1:01:57Speaker 02

Depending on where he's hunting, I'd say a fifty pound bag of corn.

• 1:02:02Speaker 02

  Some old apples.

• 1:02:03Speaker 05

  Maybe, maybe.

• 1:02:05Speaker 04

  Yeah, it's fairly vague.

• 1:02:07Speaker 05

Sharp knife, gotta be able to gut and.

• 1:02:09Speaker 02

  Mm hmm.

• 1:02:10Speaker 05

Gut and chop up your deer after he gets it. But what else to help him be successful? Binoculars? You don't really have to have binos in the whitetail woods.

• 1:02:20Speaker 04

No. Something to help keep you patient, assuming may be in a tree.

• 1:02:25Speaker 05

  Hmm.

• 1:02:26Speaker 04

  Maybe a good book.

• 1:02:27Speaker 05

Hmm. Yeah, a good book and some good snacks.

• 1:02:30Speaker 04

  Mm hmm.

• 1:02:31Speaker 02

Or just one earbud to listen to Meat Eater Radio live, not live.

• 1:02:35Speaker 05

  Nah, I don't support that.

• 1:02:37Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:02:38Speaker 05

  I don't.

• 1:02:38Speaker 06

We get a lot of people in the chat saying that they're sitting in a tree stand or sitting against a tree, waiting for turkeys, listening to radio. That seems irresponsible if you're trying to be an efficient hunter. But hey, thanks for listening.

• 1:02:50Speaker 02

Might get you in the mood, though.

• 1:02:52Speaker 04

  Right.

• 1:02:54Speaker 05

You're already out there. If you're not in the mood, might not be the right thing for you.

• 1:03:01Speaker 05

  That's a really good point.

• 1:03:03Speaker 02

Yeah. Listen to Yanis. If you're not happy to be out there, go home.

• 1:03:07Speaker 05

Yeah, go, go pick up golf.

• 1:03:09Speaker 02

Save it for the rest of us.

• 1:03:11Speaker 05

That's right. You got more Randall?

• 1:03:14Speaker 02

Uh, I think that's it for questions. Phil, how are we doing on time here?

• 1:03:19Speaker 06

We're doing great on time. We can, we can, uh, head for the final lap here.

• 1:03:23Speaker 05

But there's, there's no, uh, there's no chat room, uh, questions?

• 1:03:27Speaker 06

Uh, Mogor says, we're doing a great job. Keep it up.

• 1:03:30Speaker 05

  Uh, thanks Mogor.

• 1:03:31Speaker 04

We really, really needed that one.

• 1:03:33Speaker 02

Yeah. Yeah. I'm trying to look. What an idiot. Dr. Randall, uh.

• 1:03:39Speaker 04

Hold on. I think we need to look at your meat eater roasts episode.

• 1:03:42Speaker 02

Randall's the guy we all love to hate. I mute it when he opens his mouth.

• 1:03:48Speaker 06

Is that, is that one real?

• 1:03:50Speaker 02

  What's up with the wig?

• 1:03:51Speaker 04

  That's not real.

• 1:03:51Speaker 02

Yeah, no, someone actually did say, these are all real. All right. Well, before we go, we have an important call to action. Starting next week, because today is June 19th, talking June 26th here.

• 1:04:06Speaker 05

Okay, hold on, hold on. I'm sorry I had to interrupt, but since we're not doing this live, it's fine.

• 1:04:11Speaker 04

  Thank you.

• 1:04:12Speaker 05

We, I am going to compliment Sam with you to help with your conceitedness, to bring you up, because I want you to leave today.

• 1:04:18Speaker 04

  Oh.

• 1:04:19Speaker 05

You know, up high, not down low. So, right here, Noah, uh, Rachau. This is from, uh, Randall and Spencer's, uh, roasts episode. You guys did a great job on, uh, you cooked.

• 1:04:32Speaker 02

  Well, I lost.

• 1:04:33Speaker 04

One of you did better than me.

• 1:04:34Speaker 05

You lost. Yeah. Spencer was a tough, uh, tough competitor.

• 1:04:40Speaker 05

But this fellow says Randall slamming a beer to open a cooking show makes it feel like it's a Dear Camp cook-off and I love it.

• 1:04:49Speaker 06

I've got, I've got some too. This is from last, uh, the radio live from a couple of weeks ago with the hundreds of beavers. Says, uh, came here just to comment on the movie club. Outstanding. All caps. Dr. Randall, you have set a new bar and I look forward to the next one. Wow. Hashtag proud randomal. Uh, we have, uh, Randall is a national treasure. Oh, that's from Nick. He works for us.

• 1:05:11Speaker 02

  Oh, is it?

• 1:05:13Speaker 05

  Oh, that's brutal.

• 1:05:13Speaker 02

Randall probably bought that dude a beer.

• 1:05:15Speaker 05

  That's brutal.

• 1:05:16Speaker 02

What about this? I love all the Rose shows. Oh, no. Yeah, I love all the Rose shows, but I loved this one. But he is kind of the same thing. Anyways. Randall always adds extra to everything he does. Okay, here's, here's another one. In quotes, "Yeah, like I said, don't, don't eat all of them." Is that a movie quote? No, that's from when I told them not to eat the potatoes. Okay. Cause some of the potatoes weren't. Well, he says, "I want another episode with Randall." Next one, "Randall cracks me up. Like, if you have four potatoes, pick the one that looks most done." What a good sport.

• 1:05:54Speaker 05

  Great sport.

• 1:05:54Speaker 02

See? Dr. Randall is the worst. Stop it. Jameson says, I would like to move on.

• 1:06:00Speaker 06

Jameson says, "I would like to thank whatever mechanism at MeatEater and maybe even just the universe for giving Randall the rein and more importantly, the confidence," I'm stressing that part editorially, "to follow through with whatever meta-concept that just had me laughing to tears in my truck."

• 1:06:15Speaker 02

Randall's previous comments about being depressed after losing trivia and coming home to his wife, all sad, is honestly concerning to hear.

• 1:06:26Speaker 02

  So before we go.

• 1:06:27Speaker 05

For all you Randall, for all you Randall fans, C gave you a good one to end on.

• 1:06:31Speaker 02

I do think we should, I do think we should, we should read some more comments like that. It's kind of fun.

• 1:06:36Speaker 05

Oh, I love it. It's hilarious.

• 1:06:38Speaker 02

Yeah, we're gonna have like a monthly theme.

• 1:07:26Speaker 02

Yeah, we're gonna have themes and this this month's theme is funny.

• 1:07:29Speaker 04

  Yep, so make it funny.

• 1:07:30Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:07:31Speaker 04

  Not nasty either.

• 1:07:32Speaker 02

If you've got a nasty one, save it.

• 1:07:34Speaker 05

I'm imagining like some, a lot of pictures with animals with their tongues out of their mouths doing some weird tongue motion.

• 1:07:44Speaker 02

Perhaps. Yeah, or some weirdo just walking past the camera.

• 1:07:48Speaker 05

Yeah, see, I was just gonna say, let's not have those. Do we really want those?

• 1:07:51Speaker 04

I kinda want some. They're tasteful. A lot of breeding images, maybe. Depends on how old you are, if it's funny or not.

• 1:07:58Speaker 02

Back to the animals, are we talking about?

• 1:08:01Speaker 02

  Oh, hey, well.

• 1:08:04Speaker 02

• 1:08:55Speaker 02

If you spend a lot of time outdoors, you got dogs, you got kids, you know how hard it is to keep the floor of your rig clean. A thing we do in our, in our little fleet of vehicles that have in my household, if you go look, open the door on any one of them, they all got WeatherTech. We get a car, we throw the mats out and put in WeatherTech. That way, when there's a mess, it's like your kid's fault, your dog's fault, it's the weather's fault, doesn't matter. You take them suckers out and hose them off and you're back to being good as new. I'm telling you, if you got a vehicle, put WeatherTech in there, you're gonna be happy you did it. And check this out, American made floor liners and cargo liners, okay? They laugh in the face of all weather. Go take a look for yourself today at weather tech dot com.
