• 1:30Sean Fennessey?

  I'm Sean Fennessey.

• 1:31Amanda Dobbins?

  I'm Amanda Dobbins.

• 1:32Sean Fennessey?

And this is the Big Picture, a conversation show about 2000, or as Conan O'Brien would say, "In the year 2000." CR is here. We are drafting again.

• 1:41Amanda Dobbins?

  You would sing it, though.

• 1:41Sean Fennessey?

Who would sing? I don't know. Who says that?

• 1:43Amanda Dobbins?

"In the year 2000," that's what they do, right? Yeah, come on.

• 1:47Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 1:47Amanda Dobbins?

You wanted to bring energy to this podcast, bring it, okay?

• 1:50Sean Fennessey?

I'm relying on our special friends to bring the energy on this podcast today. We have reconvened a septet? What, seven people?

• 1:59Amanda Dobbins?

  The High Council of Cinema.

• 2:01Sean Fennessey?

  A septet.

• 2:01Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 2:02Sean Fennessey?

This is one year later. One year ago, we did the 1999 movie draft.

• 2:06Amanda Dobbins?

That was a year ago? That was a year ago?

• 2:08Sean Fennessey?

  Rob Mahoney.

• 2:08Amanda Dobbins?

Was it a year ago in June?

• 2:10Sean Fennessey?

  It is June.

• 2:11Amanda Dobbins?

Do I know? But was it last June? We're off to a great start.

• 2:13Sean Fennessey?

I believe it was June. Was it not June? In the erstwhile Bill Simmons studio.

• 2:18Amanda Dobbins?

  Why?

• 2:20Amanda Dobbins?

I just didn't know what was happening. You're good. You're good.

• 2:24Sean Fennessey?

Rob Mahoney is here, Joanna Robinson is here, Mallory Rubin is here, Van Lathan is here, Amanda Dobbins is here, CR is here, I'm here. We're talking about 2000. 1999, who won that draft?

• 2:35Speaker 04

  I thought I did.

• 2:36Sean Fennessey?

  Joanna won.

• 2:36Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 2:37Speaker 05

  Says who?

• 2:38Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, according to which?

• 2:40Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 2:40Amanda Dobbins?

  The voting system.

• 2:42Speaker 04

  Did we have a vote?

• 2:43Speaker 06

Yeah, I won, Van got second, Mallory got third.

• 2:45Speaker 04

  Whoa.

• 2:46Speaker 06

The Ringer vs. Crew ran the board.

• 2:48Sean Fennessey?

I don't know about that. Okay. It's been held over our head ever since, so.

• 2:52Speaker 07

Well, I think you've won the last 19 House of Our Hype drafts.

• 2:55Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 2:56Sean Fennessey?

  That's true. That's probably true.

• 2:58Speaker 04

And we thought maybe I won Tom Cruise, right?

• 2:59Sean Fennessey?

  We didn't think that.

• 3:00Speaker 07

  No way.

• 3:02Sean Fennessey?

You wrote the subreddit dedicated to you and came to that conclusion.

• 3:06Speaker 04

That's not what happened. I just thought I got a vibe from people. Everybody was like,

• 3:10Speaker 05

  Who did win that, Bill?

• 3:10Speaker 04

  Damn, Chris crushed it.

• 3:11Sean Fennessey?

We didn't have, we did vote, but we didn't get results. I think the scuttlebutt was Bill.

• 3:15Speaker 05

  Well, probably.

• 3:16Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, well, I think, you know, Bill was kind of putting that out into the universe.

• 3:19Sean Fennessey?

  He was, he was.

• 3:20Amanda Dobbins?

And so it did come back to him.

• 3:20Sean Fennessey?

But he did have the turn, which he thought was bad, but it was actually good.

• 3:24Amanda Dobbins?

  Which was fine.

• 3:24Sean Fennessey?

We did give him a couple of breaks. Um, who will win today? I don't know.

• 3:28Speaker 07

Not me. I'll be finishing last.

• 3:30Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 3:30Speaker 06

I've been hearing from people, pre-record, that this is very much a vibes draft for a lot of people.

• 3:36Sean Fennessey?

Okay. Is that because we don't like the movies? Let's have that conversation.

• 3:40Speaker 04

  Let's do it.

• 3:41Sean Fennessey?

  2000?

• 3:42Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 3:42Speaker 06

It's not as good as 99.

• 3:44Sean Fennessey?

  Were?

• 3:44Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 3:45Sean Fennessey?

It's definitely not, 99 needed seven people because it was such a powerful movie year. 2000, little bit of a hangover.

• 3:52Speaker 07

And yet you've added a category, so we will be selecting more movies.

• 3:55Sean Fennessey?

Well, maybe I'll remove a category while we're, while we're doing this, but we'll see.

• 3:59Speaker 05

  Hell no.

• 3:59Sean Fennessey?

No? You want to do all seven?

• 4:01Speaker 05

  We must forge ahead.

• 4:03Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 4:03Speaker 05

Now, when I, I was, it was actually sobering to see the amount of movies that I was just kind of like, huh, it's a very TNT on a Sunday afternoon movie.

• 4:13Sean Fennessey?

  Very, that's the vibe.

• 4:13Speaker 04

  It is.

• 4:14Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 4:15Speaker 04

It is before the basketball game cinema.

• 4:17Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 4:20Sean Fennessey?

Ninety-nine was was easy because in addition to there being, you know, whatever fifteen out now classics, the next thirty movies were also a lot of fun, a lot of personal favorites. I think there's a pretty strong upper tier in two thousand.

• 4:32Speaker 08

  Definitely.

• 4:33Sean Fennessey?

Once we get into the B tier, it'll be interesting. It's a little outside the general Amanda zone, I would say, some of the all-time classics.

• 4:38Amanda Dobbins?

But I think Dobbins is gonna thrive in the later rounds. Listen, I please don't put anything out there, okay? You know, I do have a strategy. I said to Chris before we started, I did some prep, but we might be winging it a little bit. I'm trying.

• 4:55Speaker 04

  We.

• 4:56Amanda Dobbins?

  Me.

• 4:56Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 4:57Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, but the royal.

• 4:58Sean Fennessey?

  The royal we.

• 4:58Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, sure. But, you know, I I don't know if I think the top tier is as strong as other years. And then the rest of it is weird. So you have to go searching for value.

• 5:11Sean Fennessey?

Okay. Rob, I'd like to start with you. The year two thousand, who were you? What was your relationship to movies?

• 5:16Speaker 08

I was eleven years old. Very important year for me. It was the year I got really into Green Day.

• 5:21Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, hell, yeah.

• 5:22Speaker 08

And so I would say it was the year that, like, my taste as a person started to develop outside of my family for the first time.

• 5:28Speaker 04

Is that warning? What is what was that American Idiot?

• 5:30Speaker 08

I got really into Nimrod. Nimrod was the album. I don't even know if that was the newest one, but I went camping and a dude was playing Time of Your Life on an acoustic guitar and I was like, that's what I want.

• 5:41Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, you're set.

• 5:42Sean Fennessey?

Is that Hitchin' a Ride? What was the what else is on Nimrod?

• 5:45Speaker 08

Hitchin' a Ride. What else is on that album?

• 5:47Speaker 04

  Green Day draft right now?

• 5:48Sean Fennessey?

Nimrod's kind of when I jumped out.

• 5:49Speaker 08

Nice Guys Finish Last, I think, is on that one. It's a banger of an album, but I would say it applies just as much to movies. Like, this is me finding some stuff that I'm into, that my parents aren't into, that my friends aren't necessarily into, that my brother's not, like, handing off to me. Like, I'm trying to find my stuff at this time.

• 6:03Sean Fennessey?

  Joe?

• 6:05Speaker 06

I was in college, I was working at a movie theater this year. This is the one and only year I worked at a movie theater, learned how to clean the butter machine among.

• 6:13Speaker 05

  That's an Amazon show.

• 6:14Speaker 06

Wow. The one and only year I worked at a movie theater.

• 6:17Amanda Dobbins?

You really are at your creative peak right now.

• 6:19Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 6:19Amanda Dobbins?

  That opportunity everywhere.

• 6:21Speaker 05

That's a great little summer thing there. I like that.

• 6:24Sean Fennessey?

Did you were you seeing a new movie every day?

• 6:27Speaker 06

Yeah, and and a lot of them, I've seen the end of a lot of these movies so many times. Because you just walk in with your, like, your broom and your bucket, waiting to clear up the people's popcorn, and you watch the end of Almost Famous nine hundred times.

• 6:41Sean Fennessey?

Okay, but did you see the beginning as well or no?

• 6:43Speaker 06

  Yes.

• 6:46Amanda Dobbins?

Sorry, raising my hand. Uh, what is the, I'm channeling 2000 Amanda. What is the etiquette and like? How many movies do you get to see a day? Like in full, when you're working at a movie theater? How are you?

• 6:59Speaker 06

  If you're on shift?

• 7:00Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 7:01Speaker 06

You don't see any in full while you're on shift?

• 7:03Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 7:04Speaker 06

But you can see unlimited when you're not working.

• 7:07Sean Fennessey?

But is that kinda like a lifeguard doesn't wanna go swimming after a shift? Like, did you wanna get out of the movie theater?

• 7:13Speaker 06

  No.

• 7:13Sean Fennessey?

  Oh.

• 7:14Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah. So would you go early or would you stay late?

• 7:17Speaker 06

Um, I had the closing shift a lot, cuz I was also in school. And so I had the closing shift a lot. But like on the, on my days off, I would just go to the movies all the time.

• 7:24Speaker 05

  This is the show.

• 7:26Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay. I told you.

• 7:28Speaker 05

  It's a love story.

• 7:30Speaker 06

  Sure.

• 7:30Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, God, that's beautiful.

• 7:32Speaker 06

  And cinema.

• 7:32Speaker 05

  And cinema.

• 7:34Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 7:34Speaker 05

  And a young cinephile.

• 7:36Sean Fennessey?

  Hmm.

• 7:37Speaker 05

Every time you go in to the, clean the movies up at the end, there is a young, black.

• 7:47Speaker 06

  It's our story.

• 7:48Speaker 05

A young, black kid who's sitting there.

• 7:51Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 7:52Speaker 05

He's watching all of these movies because he's running away from a fraught home life.

• 7:57Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 7:58Speaker 05

He's explaining the movies to you because you can't afford and don't have the time to see them at any other time. You guys just love blossoms over film.

• 8:07Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 8:07Speaker 05

  And that's the entire film.

• 8:09Sean Fennessey?

  Jungle fever meets cinema paradise.

• 8:10Speaker 05

  Jungle fever, cinema paradise.

• 8:13Sean Fennessey?

A little Adventureland in there, I feel like.

• 8:14Speaker 05

  Little bit.

• 8:15Sean Fennessey?

Who's the black Kristen Stewart? You know, like, who, how are we, how are we doing this thing?

• 8:18Speaker 06

Here's, here's a key, key factor. In order to win my heart, this person needs to not just leave their trash all over the ground.

• 8:24Speaker 05

  He helps you clean up.

• 8:26Sean Fennessey?

What's the vibe on that in general these days? Do you guys pick up?

• 8:28Speaker 05

I pick up all my movies.

• 8:29Speaker 06

Yes, yeah, of course. Throw your trash away.

• 8:32Sean Fennessey?

  Why are you asking?

• 8:32Amanda Dobbins?

I'm lower at it. Take your shopping cart back to the little shopping cart holder.

• 8:37Sean Fennessey?

  It's a gift.

• 8:37Amanda Dobbins?

  In the parking lot.

• 8:38Speaker 05

Oh, I know you guys have heard the Code 50 story, right? If you.

• 8:42Sean Fennessey?

Pipped it away from movie theater pretty quickly with that.

• 8:44Speaker 05

If you do one thing. Help the code fifty at wherever you are by taking your shopping cart back. It is a grueling job in the summer. I was a Walmart code fifty for an entire summer.

• 9:00Speaker 04

Around the parking lot, you grab the carts.

• 9:01Speaker 05

On a Saturday in Baton Rouge, it's ninety-five degrees. And you get all the carts, they're lined up like little ducks in a row. And all of a sudden, five minutes later, they're all over the place. It's a never ending job.

• 9:16Sean Fennessey?

What if, let's just say hypothetically, a person has an insane screaming toddler? And you need to get them out of the cart and into the car and get out of the parking lot as quickly as possible? Is there an allowance for not returning the cart to the space where they belong?

• 9:31Amanda Dobbins?

I've been there. It is tough. I think you gotta, you gotta keep the toddler in the cart, park the cart, and then carry the toddler back.

• 9:42Sean Fennessey?

Are y'all looking for permission or forgiveness? I'm just speaking hypothetically.

• 9:49Speaker 04

He wants to know when he witnesses behavior like this, how he should respond.

• 9:53Amanda Dobbins?

Also, another thing that you could do is that if you are parking your car and you see someone having the issue that Sean or I may hypothetically be having, you take the cart back on your way.

• 10:04Speaker 04

  Can I make another suggestion?

• 10:05Amanda Dobbins?

  Sure.

• 10:06Speaker 04

Live a more continental lifestyle and only buy food for the meal that's next. You know, like kind of like the Italian or French style, stopping by the market on the way home from.

• 10:14Sean Fennessey?

  Chris does not shop.

• 10:15Amanda Dobbins?

And then why are you just bringing it on over to my house when you're done shopping for yourself?

• 10:19Speaker 07

  I don't have children and I don't cook, so I can't comment.

• 10:22Speaker 06

Can I put one more button on this movie theater thing? Which is that, it's not on our list, but I believe, my memory serves, there was an Exorcist re-release this year. And it made people very ill in the cinema. And that is something that we had to deal with.

• 10:36Sean Fennessey?

  Oh, no.

• 10:37Speaker 04

  That sucks.

• 10:37Sean Fennessey?

  Whoa.

• 10:40Sean Fennessey?

  Did you hold a mop?

• 10:41Speaker 06

  That's terrible. Yes.

• 10:44Sean Fennessey?

I'm sorry. It's cool. Mallory, in 2000, did you hold them on?

• 10:49Speaker 07

Uh, it's possible that at some point, my, my mother set some chores and said, you know, swivel that fucking floor, fold the laundry, iron it. It's entirely possible. Yeah.

• 10:57Sean Fennessey?

Does that explain your fastidiousness to this day?

• 11:00Speaker 07

Hmm. I think my, my husband has some feedback recently on the, the tidiness level in our home. So, uh, Chris can ask him about that as Adam texts him every day with new 4K links. And they discuss their passion for physical media. Beautiful.

• 11:13Speaker 04

  The brotherhood just bruised.

• 11:15Speaker 07

  Really thrilled for you guys.

• 11:18Speaker 07

Adam was at 2000, as Sean knows, uh, DVDs for years, just waiting for other people to talk to him about this. So he's delighted. Um, in the year 2000, I was, uh, let's see, eighth grade into ninth grade. So end of middle school into the beginning of high school. So it's an interesting stretch in my movie history where like this was a big time for middle school, early high school movies, right? I, I don't know, 800 sleepovers where we watched Center Stage, for example, right? Like there were some movies that just feel inextricable from thinking back to those years. I was also still seeing movies with my parents. Like I definitely saw Meet the Parents with my parents, not together, because they split when I was two, but that's for another podcast.

• 11:58Sean Fennessey?

What'd you guys say, like American Psycho?

• 12:00Speaker 07

Right. And then that's kind of the third bucket of like, I'm an adult and I am becoming my own person and I will engage with mature cinema.

• 12:09Speaker 04

  How old were you again?

• 12:11Speaker 07

  13.

• 12:12Speaker 04

Okay. Cause you're like, I was an adult, but I'm having sleepovers and watching Center Stage.

• 12:15Speaker 07

Yeah. Oh, you know, love a sleepover. Um, and some of these movies that I discovered later in high school, you know, some of these movies were a big part of my life later in high school or even in college. So the formative years, I mean, very similar in that sense to, to 99.

• 12:27Sean Fennessey?

  Man, 2000.

• 12:29Speaker 05

I was in the wilderness film wise because this was a banner year for me. I had left Louisiana Tech and transferred to Southern University.

• 12:39Speaker 04

  You hit the portal.

• 12:40Speaker 05

  I did.

• 12:42Speaker 05

And when we got on the yard, me and my friend Ryan Davenport, my very best friend, known him since the first grade, when we, when we got-

• 12:52Speaker 06

I thought you were his best friend. I thought so too.

• 12:53Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 12:54Speaker 06

  Brutal.

• 12:54Speaker 05

I'm sorry about that. When we got on the yard-

• 12:57Speaker 06

  Tough.

• 12:58Speaker 05

The, uh, Southern's campus, HBCU, Baton Rouge, we couldn't concentrate on anything else other than what was going on on the yard.

• 13:05Sean Fennessey?

  What was going on?

• 13:06Speaker 05

  Email.

• 13:07Speaker 04

  Vultures.

• 13:07Speaker 06

  Yep.

• 13:11Speaker 05

Couldn't concentrate on, like, I'm looking at this-

• 13:13Speaker 06

And did you say it like that, just like that?

• 13:14Speaker 05

  Email.

• 13:15Speaker 06

  Yeah, yeah.

• 13:15Speaker 05

We actually didn't say it. That's actually the PC burger.

• 13:18Sean Fennessey?

Did you see any films that year?

• 13:20Speaker 05

I saw films, like, I, I saw films, but so many of these movies-

• 13:25Speaker 06

  Oh, God.

• 13:26Speaker 05

  -were DVD rentals.

• 13:28Speaker 06

  Oh, I see.

• 13:29Speaker 05

Of all of us hanging out for hangouts. Yeah, so many of these films-

• 13:33Speaker 06

And you're like, "Let's play Dude, Where's My Car again."

• 13:35Speaker 05

Uh, DVD rentals, you know what I mean? Like, I'm looking at some of these movies and I wasn't in the theaters-

• 13:42Sean Fennessey?

Different kind of battlefield that year.

• 13:42Speaker 05

Yeah, as much as I was before, because at Tech, I was going to the movies all the time, because there was less to do, but we was on the yard.

• 13:52Sean Fennessey?

What do you mean by less to do?

• 13:53Speaker 05

At Tech was, you know, it was up there and rusting, so I was going to the movies a lot, but, man, and the, on the yard, it was a Kappa party, it was a perfect ten party, you know what I mean? We had Harambe, we had, we had all different types of-

• 14:06Speaker 04

Harambe, what did you say, Harambe?

• 14:08Speaker 05

Okay, so Harambe is not just the name of an ill-fated primate.

• 14:14Speaker 04

Yeah, I, well, he, yeah, he's one of the defining characters of Amanda's wedding to me, because that was-

• 14:19Speaker 05

  Harambe-

• 14:20Speaker 04

  She got married the weekend.

• 14:21Speaker 05

  Is also the name.

• 14:24Sean Fennessey?

I knew as soon as I heard that word that that's where we were going.

• 14:28Speaker 05

Look at she goes, "What is the other morning, right?"

• 14:30Speaker 04

Remember, we just read each other's salon.com headlines about Harambe.

• 14:34Speaker 06

When you, when you celebrate your wedding anniversary, do you pour one out for Harambe?

• 14:39Sean Fennessey?

  You visit his grave site.

• 14:40Amanda Dobbins?

And what was the Thunder team that night?

• 14:43Speaker 04

That was the Klay Thompson game six.

• 14:44Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 14:45Sean Fennessey?

  Oh shit.

• 14:46Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 14:46Sean Fennessey?

  Crazy, crazy wedding.

• 14:47Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 14:48Sean Fennessey?

Yeah. A lot of people watching basketball on their phones at midnight.

• 14:51Amanda Dobbins?

Before they all stood up on chairs and started throwing things around.

• 14:55Sean Fennessey?

  Wait, who's the other Harambe?

• 14:56Speaker 05

Harambe is a multicultural festival that happens between LSU and Southern where everybody comes out and there's a step show. So I was, I was locked in. So, but I saw all of these movies at different times, but a lot of this stuff is in bedroom, in living room viewing.

• 15:12Amanda Dobbins?

I noticed you live in bedroom. Yeah, I noticed as well.

• 15:14Speaker 05

  Or, or.

• 15:15Amanda Dobbins?

Why not go other rooms? Females?

• 15:19Sean Fennessey?

  Amanda.

• 15:19Speaker 05

  AKA's.

• 15:20Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, hard to follow that one, especially with where I was. I was thinking on the way in, in many ways, maybe 2000 was like peak performance, Amanda. Like I turned 16, got my driver's license.

• 15:36Speaker 04

  Oh, wow.

• 15:36Amanda Dobbins?

Uh, state champion cross country. I mean, I was not number one, but the team was absolutely smashing those APs, you know, fives only.

• 15:45Sean Fennessey?

  Yep.

• 15:46Amanda Dobbins?

So it was like, it was like. Is this an intimidation tactic? You know, how I got, how I got on a trip. Five only AP class. I took the SATs, that went okay. Like, have I gotten back to that? What about, what about?

• 16:00Speaker 05

I'm talking shit. We could, we could all put the scores on the table. We can be a journalist. You gonna talk your shit, talk your shit.

• 16:09Amanda Dobbins?

All right. And so I just, I would have gotten back to that, you know? Like that was it.

• 16:14Sean Fennessey?

Would you describe yourself as like a cool?

• 16:15Amanda Dobbins?

No, like literally nothing I said was just cool, right? Like I was like, I was taking the SATs and AP classes, you know? But like in terms of what I was built to do.

• 16:28Sean Fennessey?

  Yep.

• 16:28Amanda Dobbins?

  Like maybe that was it.

• 16:31Sean Fennessey?

  Mm hmm.

• 16:31Amanda Dobbins?

And the rest has just been. You peaked in AP. Uh, probably, yeah. I mean, I don't think that's true, but. Thank you so much. AP psych, AP. No AP psych. What was your favorite? Um, AP music theory, uh, AP French lit, AP chem.

• 16:47Sean Fennessey?

  AP French lit?

• 16:48Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 16:49Speaker 04

  Translated.

• 16:50Amanda Dobbins?

  Exactly.

• 16:50Speaker 04

  Translated?

• 16:51Amanda Dobbins?

  That's what I'm saying.

• 16:51Sean Fennessey?

I went to public. AP French Lit.

• 16:54Speaker 06

I took, I took AP Spanish Lit. It's the thing that people take.

• 16:57Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 16:59Sean Fennessey?

And just reading Flaubert and writing essays about it?

• 17:01Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, yes, in French. Do I remember anything? No. Yeah, world history.

• 17:06Speaker 06

Did you ever cheat in AP French Lit and secretly buy the books in English? Cause that's what we did in AP Spanish Lit.

• 17:11Sean Fennessey?

  Wow.

• 17:11Speaker 06

  Um.

• 17:12Amanda Dobbins?

A lot come into light here.

• 17:13Sean Fennessey?

  Just outing yourself.

• 17:13Speaker 04

We wonder why higher education is crumbling now.

• 17:16Speaker 06

I mean, we had to write our essays in Spanish.

• 17:18Amanda Dobbins?

Maybe, maybe we did with, uh, Camus. Yeah, maybe I read The Stranger in English.

• 17:22Speaker 06

Yeah, there's like some of them you're just like, Marquez, I need some help.

• 17:25Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, but I mean, you know, you had to write the thing in French. I doubt my essay was very good. Blue Books, remember it?

• 17:31Speaker 06

Oh, I do remember the Blue Books.

• 17:32Sean Fennessey?

  I do remember it.

• 17:33Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, children.

• 17:34Sean Fennessey?

Chris, tell us about your APs in 2000.

• 17:36Speaker 04

I was, uh, 22, turning 23 in 2000. This is the 2000 AD, but 3 BSF before Sean Fantasy in my life.

• 17:46Sean Fennessey?

  That's right.

• 17:47Speaker 04

I just moved to New York City.

• 17:49Sean Fennessey?

That's how I mark time too.

• 17:52Sean Fennessey?

  Adorable.

• 17:53Speaker 06

  Really touching.

• 17:54Speaker 04

Before, uh, yeah, I lived, moved from Boston to New York in 2000 and I was writing about music. And I would describe my relationships to film as an activity rather than a passion. And I think the cinema of the time kind of, like, it kind of gave into that kind of behavior because it was like a fun thing to do on a Saturday afternoon before I went out at night. Or like if I had time to kill or whatever, if I was walking by a theater, I was like, oh, I actually checked that out when it was playing. But it wasn't like, I was making lists and I'm make, I'm thinking about it and I'm reading a lot of criticism and I'm trying to figure out like, what are the hot movies? It was just kind of like, oh, is this a movie about stealing cars? I'll go watch it, you know? And so that was my, that was my kind of movie vibe back then. But like, were you, you were still in college? Were you?

• 18:38Sean Fennessey?

Wait, you haven't talked about your relationship to females in that year. What was it?

• 18:41Speaker 06

And also your AP scores, please.

• 18:42Speaker 04

Oh daddy. Well, no, I was out of college.

• 18:44Speaker 06

  I know, I know.

• 18:45Speaker 04

So I was just taking AP tests for fun, really.

• 18:48Speaker 06

Boston into New York. So this was the big strawberry, strawberry ale era. And this was when you were getting tatted up.

• 18:54Speaker 04

  You were in a beach.

• 18:54Speaker 06

  If memory serves.

• 18:55Speaker 04

Boston, I, okay, I moved on from strawberry ale now. Those were like the freshman year beers.

• 18:59Amanda Dobbins?

I was on Newberry Street the other day and I thought of you.

• 19:02Speaker 04

  Was that?

• 19:02Amanda Dobbins?

I was on Newberry Street the other day and I thought of you.

• 19:04Speaker 04

I was smoking for five years.

• 19:05Speaker 05

Did you leave Boston because of the racism?

• 19:07Speaker 04

Yes. I was like, I just Became too much to bear? I just can't take this.

• 19:12Speaker 06

  And the strawberry ale memories.

• 19:13Speaker 04

Yes, I moved to New York with a girlfriend at the time. And, um, but she then left and went to London to be an au pair. Another show.

• 19:22Speaker 06

  Wow.

• 19:23Speaker 04

  Another show.

• 19:23Speaker 06

Well, that's Emily in Paris, but it's.

• 19:25Speaker 04

  Emily in Paris.

• 19:26Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 19:27Speaker 04

  Chris in Brooklyn.

• 19:28Speaker 06

Yeah. What was your girlfriend's name?

• 19:30Speaker 04

  It's like girls, but it's a guy.

• 19:32Speaker 06

What was your au pair girlfriend's name?

• 19:33Speaker 04

I don't want to talk about it.

• 19:37Sean Fennessey?

She was from Canada. She was a very nice girl.

• 19:41Speaker 04

  She was Juliette Benosse.

• 19:44Speaker 06

Liz Hurley? Alright, got it, got it.

• 19:47Sean Fennessey?

In 2000, I graduated from high school and started my freshman year of college. And we just thought we were so fucking cool that we were graduating high school in the year 2000. And it didn't mean anything and it is meaningless. But at that time, I was pretty much the same as I am now, obsessed with movies. Kind of straddling the line between tremendous loser and normal person. And trying to.

• 20:10Speaker 07

Were you wearing the Grey Goose vodka hat with the fish hook in it at this point?

• 20:13Sean Fennessey?

That was in college. There has not been talk of that in some time.

• 20:16Speaker 07

  It's always on my mind.

• 20:18Sean Fennessey?

Have you, have you ever seen it?

• 20:20Speaker 07

I actually believe I might have emailed Eileen once and asked for a photo, but did not receive one.

• 20:25Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, I did wear a Grey Goose vodka hat with a fish hook on it for many years.

• 20:28Speaker 06

  Do you feel like?

• 20:29Speaker 04

  Fish hook?

• 20:30Sean Fennessey?

  Yes.

• 20:30Speaker 04

What's through the bill? Like the actual hook?

• 20:32Speaker 06

  Through the bill.

• 20:32Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, for like a fishing hook.

• 20:34Speaker 04

  But why?

• 20:37Sean Fennessey?

Sending out a message to the world. If this is really what I'm about, careful, you may become ensnared.

• 20:42Speaker 07

It's my favorite fact about it.

• 20:43Speaker 06

Here's, here's a, here's a really important question. In the 99 draft last, last year, we learned canonically that 99 was the year you became the nuzzler.

• 20:51Sean Fennessey?

  Oh, yes.

• 20:51Speaker 06

Sure. What was, was this the year of the nuzzler two?

• 20:54Sean Fennessey?

  Also an Amazon series.

• 20:56Speaker 06

Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, that's, that's, I'm sorry.

• 21:00Sean Fennessey?

Got together in 99 and stayed together.

• 21:03Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 21:03Speaker 04

  Oh.

• 21:03Sean Fennessey?

  And we are together today.

• 21:05Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 21:05Sean Fennessey?

  So.

• 21:06Speaker 06

Right. The nuzzler two still nuzzling in 2000.

• 21:09Sean Fennessey?

Um, it was really, really more like an extended series rather than individual films. It was kind of my one lone dip into television. Otherwise it's been all movies for me.

• 21:18Speaker 06

  Got it, got it.

• 21:19Sean Fennessey?

So 2000, uh, you know, I saw a lot of movies in 2000, a shit ton of movies. I think 99 also supercharged a native interest and it was just like, so are we just getting like The Matrix and The Sixth Sense every year? Like, is this what movies are now?

• 21:31Speaker 04

  Reader's book.

• 21:34Sean Fennessey?

Isn't actually what happened. So this is a. Pretty fascinating year, very memorable Academy Awards because of the dominance of, I would say, two figures. Maximus and Steven Soderbergh. Those to me are the critical.

• 21:48Speaker 04

  My Maximus.

• 21:49Sean Fennessey?

  Yes.

• 21:49Speaker 05

This is the Steven Soderbergh MVP season.

• 21:54Sean Fennessey?

  I agree.

• 21:55Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, yeah.

• 21:55Speaker 05

As he's working his way through the bench with like Out of Sight and he's having a fantastic rookie year with Sex, Lies and Videotape and all of that stuff. This is the MVP season. This is finally when he grabs the thing, I'm the guy.

• 22:09Sean Fennessey?

I have a take that both of these movies are now underrated because they came out in the same year.

• 22:13Speaker 04

  I agree.

• 22:14Amanda Dobbins?

  Definitely.

• 22:15Sean Fennessey?

Even by me, I've made a lot of podcasts about Steven Soderbergh over the years.

• 22:19Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah. One, yes.

• 22:21Speaker 04

I think the classics from this year had like a long period of time. Soderbergh's and also I would say some of the other more well-guarded movies from this year had a period of like Out in the Wilderness, like nobody's really talking about them. They're not being revived at all. And then they've had a nice, a nice little run recently.

• 22:39Sean Fennessey?

  Like what?

• 22:39Speaker 04

I think I've definitely like come to love Traffic, for instance. Gladiator, I think, got a bump from the sequel and from just the sequel not being as good as Gladiator.

• 22:51Speaker 04

Bill Simmons, single-handedly, has kept Cast Away in the public consciousness for the last 15 years. So there's a lot of stuff going on, yeah.

• 22:59Sean Fennessey?

Having just recently revisited Cast Away, after not caring about it for a very long period of time, I, Bill, Bill was right.

• 23:05Amanda Dobbins?

  Pretty good movie.

• 23:05Sean Fennessey?

  Pretty amazing movie.

• 23:07Speaker 04

I don't know if it's the single film that I would think dedicate my life to thinking about.

• 23:11Sean Fennessey?

  No, I wouldn't either. I do.

• 23:13Speaker 04

That's a lot of, I mean, it's a perfect, though, in a lot of ways.

• 23:16Amanda Dobbins?

  I have a sense.

• 23:17Sean Fennessey?

I do want to frame this conversation very specifically because my thinking about it dictated some of the category decisions that we made here today. So the thing that jumped out to me when I put together the list of all the movies that qualify for the box office category is that there are only two sequels in the top 21, no, 22 movies from this year.

• 23:38Speaker 05

  Originals.

• 23:39Sean Fennessey?

That is crazy when you look at the history of movies. And obviously in the last 25 years, we've talked a lot about sequelization franchises. But if you go back to the 80s, there's usually four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10 sequels. So the thing that we always drone on about on the show, which is like make original movies. This was the year, like they did it. And we have to ask ourselves, is this actually what we want?

• 24:01Speaker 06

  Right.

• 24:01Sean Fennessey?

Because in some cases, it doesn't always turn out right because it's a risk to do an original.

• 24:07Speaker 06

Okay, so original storytelling bad, actually.

• 24:08Sean Fennessey?

  Didn't say that.

• 24:09Speaker 06

  Okay.

• 24:09Sean Fennessey?

  But I. Sounded like.

• 24:10Speaker 06

  But you implied it.

• 24:11Sean Fennessey?

  It's fodder for discussion.

• 24:12Speaker 06

  Sure.

• 24:12Sean Fennessey?

Um, and so with that in mind, we have changed a category. I'll go through the seven categories we'll be drafting from today. So most of the classics, drama, comedy, action, horror, thriller, Oscar nominee, that means any movie that was nominated for an Oscar released in this year. And then in lieu of sequel, we will do original. So that means we will pick an original movie, not based on any IP whatsoever, because there are so many options to choose from. And we can have a little bit of a spirited debate about what qualifies and what does not in a moment. And then wildcard is our last category. No, excuse me, blockbuster, 100 million dollar threshold, and then wildcard. So seven categories, seven drafters. Forty nine films. Forty nine films. This is a lot. We gotta make, we gotta be succinct in our picks. Yeah.

• 24:59Sean Fennessey?

The original question. Now, I got a, a late text message, and no, a, a post 10pm text message from Mal.

• 25:06Speaker 06

  Okay.

• 25:14Sean Fennessey?

It was former President Barack Obama. And he said, I heard the 2000 draft is coming. I'll have you know, I was a junior senator from Illinois at that time. Was he a junior? He wasn't a junior senator. He wasn't yet. Not yet. Wow. What was he doing? Was he? He was in, he was still a congressman. Local government? Yeah. He was a state senator. State senator.

• 25:29Speaker 04

He was just watching NC tape. Yeah.

• 25:31Sean Fennessey?

Uh, so Mal texted me, and I won't say the title of the film, but it is a film that is based on true events, but fictionalized. And she said, does this movie qualify for original?

• 25:39Speaker 06

  Hmm.

• 25:40Sean Fennessey?

  And it's, I don't, I, I don't have a strong feeling. I think it's worth discussing.

• 25:44Speaker 07

I was following up on what I realized some eight to 12 hours later in the day was a, a note from you that I had not absorbed or understood in full, which was like, real life figures count as in this exercise IP.

• 26:01Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 26:01Speaker 07

That would make a movie not an original movie. So if it is a historical adaptation, if it is based on a book, if it is based on a play, if it is based on an older version of the movie, we're saying that it being based on real figures is the same as being an adaptation of a book, which to me is ludicrous.

• 26:17Speaker 06

  I agree.

• 26:18Amanda Dobbins?

  That's insane.

• 26:18Speaker 07

Absolutely absurd. It makes the category almost impossible. But it's your draft.

• 26:23Amanda Dobbins?

  Is it?

• 26:24Speaker 05

  Jesus.

• 26:25Amanda Dobbins?

Let's be legal about it. Is something being

• 26:29Amanda Dobbins?

is like if it's if it's a book, if it's a biography, if it's a, um, I don't want to give anything away, but a piece of journalism, you know?

• 26:39Speaker 06

  Memoir.

• 26:39Amanda Dobbins?

Then that is IP. If it's just, you know, life rights.

• 26:45Speaker 07

Right. And what if the figures are inspired by, but it's not a direct one to one based on this person's life?

• 26:53Speaker 05

You guys are legitimately making Sean uncomfortable right now. No, I think we should, I think we should do the

• 26:58Sean Fennessey?

I think he wants to be pushed.

• 26:59Speaker 05

I think we'll know it when we see it.

• 27:00Speaker 07

Okay, so people, so make the pick, try to pick it in that category if you want, and then the group can say no.

• 27:06Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 27:07Speaker 07

  And you adjust.

• 27:07Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, I think that's right.

• 27:08Speaker 05

  Original.

• 27:09Sean Fennessey?

I made a list of potential originals and came up with quite a few.

• 27:13Speaker 05

  It's a lot.

• 27:14Sean Fennessey?

Um, I think there's a lot here that even if you remove the docudrama element, there's a rich tapestry of picks to choose from. Now, are they exactly the movies that you want on your draft board? Probably not. It's going to be hard to get all the movies you want with seven drafters and seven categories.

• 27:29Speaker 07

  Oh, yeah.

• 27:30Sean Fennessey?

We just went through this with Tom Cruise. You know, some not so great movies were drafted.

• 27:34Speaker 06

  Some absolutely brutal stuff.

• 27:36Speaker 05

Yeah. I had to take Interview with the Vampire.

• 27:38Speaker 07

I would have taken it, but you had the honor to.

• 27:41Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 27:42Speaker 05

  That movie sucks.

• 27:43Sean Fennessey?

It was only, that was only funny because you talked about how you didn't want it.

• 27:47Speaker 05

The show, we gotta talk. We gotta do the Interview with the Vampire. The show

• 27:51Speaker 06

We talked about this last time. We talked about the show.

• 27:53Speaker 05

Riddled and degraded the movie to me. I can't do the movie anymore. The show is so much greater.

• 27:57Speaker 06

It's not nearly as good as the show, but it's still.

• 27:58Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 27:59Speaker 06

  Okay.

• 28:00Sean Fennessey?

Okay, uh, before we draft, we need to set the draft order. For the very last time, Bobby Wagner will be helping us set the draft order.

• 28:06Amanda Dobbins?

  Bobby!

• 28:10Sean Fennessey?

Bob, do you want to weigh in on this original debate?

• 28:13Speaker 09

  Nope.

• 28:13Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 28:13Speaker 09

Not my job anymore. You guys figure that out over there. I'm just here to set the order.

• 28:20Speaker 05

  Get to it.

• 28:21Speaker 09

Selecting first overall will be Mallory Rubin.

• 28:25Speaker 07

  Oh, no.

• 28:27Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 28:27Speaker 07

  I didn't want that.

• 28:28Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 28:29Speaker 07

  Honestly.

• 28:30Speaker 09

Nobody ever wants where I pick them. Like, what do you guys, you get first, you get last, everyone's mad all the time.

• 28:37Sean Fennessey?

This was the burden that you carried for many years.

• 28:39Speaker 09

Yeah, now it's not my responsibility anymore. Uh, second overall, Rob Mahoney.

• 28:48Speaker 09

This is a lot of tiles to pick out. Without Sean even vamping.

• 28:53Sean Fennessey?

  Sean, third?

• 28:54Speaker 04

  Sean.

• 28:55Amanda Dobbins?

  Sean, third.

• 28:56Speaker 07

  Wait, who was second? Sorry.

• 28:57Sean Fennessey?

  Third.

• 28:58Speaker 09

  Yeah, Rob.

• 28:59Sean Fennessey?

  Hmm.

• 29:02Sean Fennessey?

So you, you have like a hierarchy of picks. You're like, I'm, this is my personal relationship.

• 29:07Speaker 04

Before I go through the list of films released in the year, I write down everyone that I know I saw.

• 29:12Amanda Dobbins?

  You're fourth, dear.

• 29:13Speaker 09

  Fourth is Chris.

• 29:15Speaker 04

And then I may, I do like basically a power ranking of them.

• 29:18Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 29:18Speaker 04

But then I put them into their appropriate genre categories or their, their appropriate categories.

• 29:23Sean Fennessey?

  I see.

• 29:23Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 29:24Sean Fennessey?

And you order them by preference?

• 29:26Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 29:26Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 29:27Speaker 04

But I, then I, at the moment, when we walk in.

• 29:29Speaker 09

  Joanna fifth?

• 29:30Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, Joanna's five.

• 29:31Sean Fennessey?

How did you do it with Sea Biscuit since you haven't seen the film?

• 29:35Speaker 04

That was more about my relationship to horses in general.

• 29:37Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 29:38Speaker 04

  And World War II.

• 29:40Amanda Dobbins?

  Sure.

• 29:40Speaker 04

  Uh, bond raising, you know?

• 29:42Sean Fennessey?

He was not racing during World War II.

• 29:44Speaker 09

Van is going sixth, which makes Amanda seventh.

• 29:48Sean Fennessey?

  You have the turn.

• 29:48Amanda Dobbins?

  I have the turn. Okay.

• 29:50Speaker 07

  Fuck.

• 29:54Sean Fennessey?

  Second, second. First.

• 29:56Speaker 07

Did not want the first pick in this draft.

• 29:57Sean Fennessey?

Well, Mallory, you have the honors.

• 30:00Speaker 07

  Bobby, we love you.

• 30:01Sean Fennessey?

  Bobby.

• 30:03Sean Fennessey?

You did it, Bob. Thank you very much, Bob. Farewell to Top Gun.

• 30:06Speaker 09

For the Top Gun hat. Good luck, everyone.

• 30:09Speaker 07

Oh, thank you, Bobby. Let's go Mets!

• 30:13Sean Fennessey?

Let's go Mall is more appropriate. It's your turn.

• 30:16Amanda Dobbins?

Um, I saw them lose recently.

• 30:18Speaker 07

  Yeah, I know.

• 30:19Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 30:19Speaker 07

You got to see Dobbins pitch.

• 30:20Amanda Dobbins?

I did. Yeah, Dobbins start and then, uh, walk off in the 10th for the Sox.

• 30:25Speaker 07

  Yeah, not for the Orioles.

• 30:26Sean Fennessey?

  Wasn't there a Norwegian?

• 30:27Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, I sat through it in the first inning, but we made it.

• 30:31Speaker 07

All right, um, I didn't want the number one pick because in a draft this size, it's just so long to wait for the second pick. And I think that's going to be a, a challenge for me.

• 30:40Amanda Dobbins?

So take your time up now, yeah.

• 30:41Speaker 07

  But.

• 30:44Speaker 07

And I kind of like knew what I wanted to do in the two through seven range, but I do feel like I know what I want to pick. And

• 30:53Speaker 07

I'm curious to see if you guys agree and think there was a consensus, or if this could have gone a number of different ways.

• 31:00Speaker 07

I will be selecting something that has been on all of our minds recently because of a sequel that was not as good. And made us appreciate this film more. What we do in movie drafts echoes in eternity. I will be taking Gladiator, which I think is the closest.

• 31:16Speaker 04

  In.

• 31:17Speaker 07

  In.

• 31:21Speaker 07

  Oscar nominee.

• 31:22Speaker 04

  Interesting.

• 31:22Speaker 07

I will be taking Gladiator, an Oscar nominee.

• 31:25Sean Fennessey?

  Interesting.

• 31:25Speaker 07

Um, I think this is the closest to like, yeah, this might've been number one on most people's boards, but I won't be surprised if that's not the case.

• 31:33Speaker 04

You know, it was, and then I feel like Sean did a whisper campaign about how Gladiator is not that good. Did he? Did you?

• 31:40Sean Fennessey?

Did I do a whisper campaign?

• 31:42Speaker 04

Have you been, have you been kind of like, this movie's not actually one of my movies?

• 31:44Speaker 07

I feel like we all saw the second one and thought, you know what? That first one was even better than we realized.

• 31:48Sean Fennessey?

Well, I, I, I think both things can be true. I think it can be not my favorite Ridley Scott movie, and I can also acknowledge that it has greatness in it. It's just not.

• 31:57Speaker 05

It's interesting because like Gladiator is an original movie, but I think there's a through line with the original movies that we have in this year. Is that they're all super familiar concepts. You got your sword and sandal movie. You got your big time comedy where you're actually meeting, if there's all, there's all things you can glom onto. So Gladiator feels like a movie that you've seen before. And like, it takes you a while to realize that you're watching somebody that has historical figures and it's the whole nine. That's like a, a throwback Spartacus type film. So people knew what to expect when they went to sit down.

• 32:31Sean Fennessey?

It also does feature real life figures.

• 32:34Speaker 05

Yeah, Marcus Aurelius is a world.

• 32:36Sean Fennessey?

And then also. The inspiration for that movie is based on a book about Colosseum fighting, but then nothing is really taken from that book other than the idea of Colosseum fighting being the platform, the stage for the movie. So if it were to go into the original conversation, I think that would have been the most interesting debate that we could have had.

• 32:56Speaker 07

Is that what you're asking about? There were, it actually wasn't the one I texted him about, but it was the thing we had discussed during the day.

• 33:02Sean Fennessey?

Yes, yesterday we talked about it.

• 33:03Speaker 07

Then I was reflecting on it later and I was like, wait, now I have a question about another movie. I feel good about this pick. This is a solid movie to have on my board.

• 33:09Sean Fennessey?

  It's a great pick.

• 33:10Speaker 08

Can I pick one nit on the gladiatorial front? Every time I watch this movie, I want more time in the miners. Like Gladiator AAA is my favorite part.

• 33:19Sean Fennessey?

  Right.

• 33:20Speaker 08

And I feel like, like you gotta prove you can do it in Rochester before you get to Rome. And I feel like we fast forward through that stuff way, way too fast.

• 33:26Speaker 06

I have a stars show for you called Spartacus.

• 33:29Speaker 07

And guess what? Guess what? I loved every second of Spartacus. A lot of dicks in that show.

• 33:33Speaker 06

Starting with Blood and Sand Show.

• 33:35Sean Fennessey?

  A lot of dicks.

• 33:36Speaker 07

And so we've again, a lot of dicks.

• 33:39Sean Fennessey?

Gladiator 2 had the same problem, where it was like Paul Meskell was a warrior and then a slave and then, and then he won one fight and they were like, you are now entering the Roman Colosseum.

• 33:50Speaker 04

But he also, but he had familial kind of claim to the, to the church.

• 33:55Speaker 06

He was really bad at speeches. You know, he had a lot going for him.

• 33:58Speaker 05

  Gladiator 2 is fucking unwatchable.

• 34:02Speaker 07

  First Gladiator rules though.

• 34:03Speaker 06

I didn't think it was unwatchable.

• 34:04Speaker 05

I watched it. I tried to watch it again.

• 34:07Speaker 06

  I watched it.

• 34:08Speaker 05

  Gladiator 2 sucks.

• 34:10Sean Fennessey?

What about, I thought Denzel was very entertaining.

• 34:12Speaker 06

I thought Denzel was great. I thought the syphilitic emperors were great.

• 34:15Speaker 07

I saw it at 10 AM by myself.

• 34:18Speaker 06

  The monkey was wonderful.

• 34:19Speaker 05

The first time I saw it, I was like, hey, you know, this is kind of cool. The second time I watched it, it's a fucking mess.

• 34:24Sean Fennessey?

Well, I've seen it once, so maybe I don't ever have to answer that question.

• 34:27Speaker 08

  All right.

• 34:30Sean Fennessey?

  Rob.

• 34:31Speaker 08

Rob Mahoney has the number two pick. I feel like this is pretty easy. I'm gonna take Almost Famous.

• 34:35Speaker 07

Yeah, that was the other one I considered at one.

• 34:36Speaker 05

That would have been my number two.

• 34:37Speaker 06

  It's really tough.

• 34:38Speaker 07

  It's really tough.

• 34:39Speaker 08

  Pretty undeniable.

• 34:40Speaker 07

  I didn't think I could do it.

• 34:41Sean Fennessey?

I don't know why I thought that was gonna fall to you.

• 34:42Speaker 06

  Yeah, Malick cannot betray me.

• 34:43Speaker 08

What the hell? I kind of figured it would go at one, so I'm thrilled to have it at two. Watching it at the time, I'm very much like goner for Penny Lane watching this movie. Now I watch it and I realize. No comment. Now I watch it and I'm like really identifying with Frances McDormand. So, you know, we have, we've crested into a different stage of life.

• 35:04Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, I'm feeling that deeply.

• 35:06Speaker 08

She's making a lot of great points. Maybe not like full on record confiscation points, but other than that incredibly charming undeniable movies. So hard not to get swept away and it is a classic. I'm gonna pull up this one scene and I end up watching the back. I don't know. Hour and a half of this movie.

• 35:21Speaker 07

  It's the best. What category?

• 35:23Speaker 08

I'm gonna take it. So can I make the argument for comedy is Almost Famous enough of a dramedy to be a comedy?

• 35:30Speaker 07

  I think so.

• 35:33Speaker 08

That feels like too much hesitation.

• 35:34Speaker 04

I think it's, I think it's in, I bet in Wikipedia describes it as a romantic comedy.

• 35:39Sean Fennessey?

I find that fascinating because I think this is actually a great year for comedy. So I'll allow it just in that very specific respect.

• 35:44Speaker 07

This was what I texted Sean about last night at 11pm by the way.

• 35:47Speaker 08

  Yeah.

• 35:47Sean Fennessey?

  Yes.

• 35:48Speaker 08

  In terms of original.

• 35:49Sean Fennessey?

Almost Famous was the question as to would this be considered because neither William Miller nor the band he is profiling are real people. But let Zeppelin exist in this world.

• 36:01Speaker 07

  Ben Fong Torres is here.

• 36:03Sean Fennessey?

Ben Fong Torres, of course, Lester Bangs, of course. Like we've got real people. But by changing, what was it? Was it the Eagles or the Doobie Brothers? What was the band that he was sort of like loosely basing his experience as a Cameron Crowe? The Doobie Brothers?

• 36:16Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 36:17Sean Fennessey?

So I was like obsessed with music magazines when this movie came out and my life's goal was to work at a music magazine when this movie came out. And I was obviously already a huge fan of Cameron Crowe. Folks have heard me talk about Jerry Maguire many times on the show.

• 36:30Sean Fennessey?

I was like, is this really happening when this movie came out? Like I was electrified by this movie and didn't maybe totally even understand what Cameron Crowe's life was and the fact that he was like, yeah, I'm 16, I'm on the road with a band. Fuck. I find it still has the magic.

• 36:45Speaker 04

  That's how I feel.

• 36:45Speaker 07

  It's a HBO show.

• 36:46Speaker 04

  Task.

• 36:49Sean Fennessey?

My ruffalo for me? This is like a, you guys can weigh in on this too, please. If they didn't score that to Guns N' Roses's patience, would that be a good trailer? But they did.

• 36:57Speaker 04

  It's a good trailer.

• 36:59Sean Fennessey?

You know what I mean? Because Guns N' Roses's patience, like, that's over here. That's a five out of five. Yeah. You can't get better. That is music. That's aesthetics. That's like, this is what we're going for.

• 37:07Speaker 04

Yeah, that's on the mood board.

• 37:08Speaker 07

It's interesting that you're holding your arm up to say that's over here because it does allow me to say that Joanna Robinson, who's with us today, has an almost famous tattoo

• 37:16Sean Fennessey?

  Yes.

• 37:17Speaker 07

on her wrist. And yet, Rob Mahoney took this movie before she could.

• 37:19Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, you know what?

• 37:20Speaker 07

Not a thing that I did to her.

• 37:21Amanda Dobbins?

I think that we have learned over time that Rob Mahoney takes no prisoners.

• 37:26Speaker 06

I made my, I made my piece of this. I was like, if I'm not a number one or two drafter, I'm not getting it.

• 37:31Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 37:31Speaker 06

But this is a movie that changed my life. It's the reason I got into journalism. It's a perfect movie.

• 37:36Sean Fennessey?

Well, you know, we said that, Rob, fuck you.

• 37:41Sean Fennessey?

All right. Well, I'm in the complicated position of number three.

• 37:44Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 37:45Sean Fennessey?

  Hmm.

• 37:48Sean Fennessey?

  Well,

• 37:50Sean Fennessey?

I think I'm gonna take a blockbuster. And I think I'm gonna take one of the most exciting blockbusters of this year. And the fact that it was a blockbuster is a remarkable thing that happened. Taking Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

• 38:00Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 38:01Sean Fennessey?

Angly masterpiece. This movie, it's hard to communicate what a phenomenon this movie was. Released by Sony Pictures Classics, by a filmmaker who'd never made action cinema like this. Who really did not indicate that this was like, I guess Pushing Hands, maybe one of his first movies, showed that he had an interest in martial arts, but

• 38:21Sean Fennessey?

extraordinary movie. Michelle Yeoh, I think for many people, the first time they saw her, and now we have a huge relationship with her in the last 10 years in movies. Just a gorgeous worship film. I think Wonya Pang, who did the choreography for The Matrix, also worked on this movie. And so you had that, like, incredible wirework and this movie made like $130 million.

• 38:42Speaker 05

You could make an argument at number one.

• 38:44Sean Fennessey?

  Absolutely.

• 38:45Speaker 05

You can make an argument at number one, it was, it was a phenomenon. It was like a, everybody was talking about the martial arts, but then also when you saw the movie, you got swept up in this beautiful story. That's gorgeous, beautiful story. It's a great movie.

• 39:01Speaker 06

  I can't see the screen.

• 39:04Sean Fennessey?

You see the, you see the sequel to this movie?

• 39:05Speaker 04

  I didn't.

• 39:06Sean Fennessey?

  Crouching Tiger 2?

• 39:07Speaker 04

I didn't. When did that come out?

• 39:08Sean Fennessey?

  Hmm, 2016, something like that.

• 39:10Speaker 07

Haven't seen the sequel. Popped in the 4K of this puppy over the weekend. Fuck.

• 39:15Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 39:16Sean Fennessey?

  Looks beautiful.

• 39:16Speaker 04

This was the, a movie that, uh, had maybe the highest approval rating of people coming out of the theater in this year. What I just anecdotally, like, I remember seeing it walking out. As a theater.

• 39:28Speaker 07

  Were you also?

• 39:29Speaker 04

I was vomiting also. Joe Festoon did you? Cause like, did you like it? Yeah.

• 39:36Sean Fennessey?

  Um, okay, number four.

• 39:39Speaker 04

  That's me.

• 39:40Sean Fennessey?

By the way, Crouching Tiger would have applied to like six of these categories.

• 39:43Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 39:44Amanda Dobbins?

Which category did you take it in?

• 39:45Sean Fennessey?

I took it in Oscar, uh, blockbuster.

• 39:47Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, okay.

• 39:49Sean Fennessey?

Blockbuster kinda, kind of a weird category.

• 39:51Speaker 04

You know what I'm gonna do? I'm gonna do something a little funny here. Okay. In original, I'm gonna do You Can Count on Me. Wow, that's a great pick. Just because you're thinking about Mark Ruffalo always. I am always thinking about Mark Ruffalo. Kenneth Lonergan's directorial debut. So good. Uh, really like the first time I had ever really seen Ruffalo. I think this is his first big role. And probably like Laura Linney's breakout, I would say. One of the most amazing portraits of, in family love that I've ever seen. And, um, what happens to families over the course of, of their lives is their parents get older and it's like, everything happens. Uh, and is tender and funny and heartbreaking. And it's probably the movie that I like take with me the most from this year. Hmm.

• 40:33Speaker 04

And, you know, with all the legalese surrounding original, uh, films this year, I thought I'd grab one. Smart. And I'm also happy to walk away with it. So that's good.

• 40:41Amanda Dobbins?

  That's a good one.

• 40:42Speaker 04

  Really good one.

• 40:43Sean Fennessey?

  Perfect movie.

• 40:43Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 40:44Speaker 07

This is a rare, if memory serves, four and a half stars for the Sean fantasy Letterboxd.

• 40:50Sean Fennessey?

Did I put, give it four and a half stars?

• 40:52Amanda Dobbins?

I think you did. Don't, don't be doing less. Don't give his Letterboxd.

• 40:55Speaker 07

The Letterboxd list and there are a number of four stars, but I only saw one four and a half.

• 40:58Speaker 04

One of the greatest last scenes in a film too.

• 41:00Sean Fennessey?

  I don't know. Um.

• 41:02Speaker 07

  He knows.

• 41:03Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 41:03Speaker 04

  Incredible cello score.

• 41:05Sean Fennessey?

  It, it does. It's a.

• 41:08Sean Fennessey?

It's a very good movie if you have a sibling. That's what I'll say.

• 41:10Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 41:10Sean Fennessey?

If you've ever had a complicated relationship.

• 41:12Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 41:13Sean Fennessey?

No offense, all the onlies, but this movie gets something very right about having siblings.

• 41:20Sean Fennessey?

I have an only in my family, so I, you know, no shots of the onlies.

• 41:23Speaker 08

This is my movie I was dumb enough to think was gonna be there in like round three or four.

• 41:26Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 41:27Speaker 08

So I'm heartbroken that you took it, but obviously.

• 41:29Speaker 04

There's a lot of stuff in a lot of other categories and I just, I, I'm like a little.

• 41:32Speaker 06

You gotta do what you want.

• 41:34Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 41:34Speaker 06

  Yeah. Same.

• 41:36Sean Fennessey?

  Okay. Is it now?

• 41:38Speaker 06

It's Joanna. We've got Jack made a helpful little rubric.

• 41:41Sean Fennessey?

Joanna, that'll be very helpful to look at. Okay, Joe.

• 41:44Speaker 06

Uh, I think you're right that we have to like dig into original while we have it. Shit. Um. Fuck.

• 41:52Speaker 06

I kind of feel like I'm gonna throw up right now. I don't. Just say it. Wow. Um.

• 41:59Speaker 06

Well, I'm inspired by Chris. Since my number one is off the board, I'm kind of spiraling. So, um, I will just go with my heart and I'll say, actually, one of the most important movies to me also in this year is Billy Elliot.

• 42:12Sean Fennessey?

  Wow.

• 42:12Speaker 06

Okay. Awesome prediction. I'm believing it, but I don't have to throw up. This is my prediction. Um, of course, then turned into a stage musical, which gave us Tom Holland, among other things in our lives. But, uh, I have watched this movie one million times. Uh, incredible Ja- young Jimmy Bell performance. Uh. Wonderful. Great movie if you've got, uh, dad issues, great movie. Uh, if you love, if you have anger and frustration and use art to get through it. Um, great movie if you love regional dialects, uh, in the UK. And, uh, this is one of those, you know, those, um,

• 42:52Speaker 06

the soundtracks that had snippets of dialogue on the, on the CD or on the, you know, tape, like little scenelets. And then you listen to that soundtrack so many times, you have all of those little moments of dialogue, like in Pulp Fiction, memorized. This is true of the Billy Elliot soundtrack for me. Um, I listened to, it's got all these great T-Rex tracks and then all these great scenes from Billy Elliot. And I cry every time I watch this movie.

• 43:16Speaker 08

Joe, you're taking this in original?

• 43:17Speaker 06

  Love this. Yes.

• 43:18Speaker 08

What is the verdict on? This is based on his own play, that then he adapts into the movie.

• 43:23Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, yeah.

• 43:24Speaker 08

But then he adapts into a different play.

• 43:26Amanda Dobbins?

Rob, did you take Almost Famous for me and now you're trying to?

• 43:28Speaker 04

  Take away Billy Elliot?

• 43:29Amanda Dobbins?

  Take Billy Elliot for me?

• 43:31Speaker 08

I would love nothing more than to give you Billy Elliot, if I'm being honest.

• 43:34Speaker 04

Person adapting all this stuff is the same guy?

• 43:37Speaker 08

  Same person.

• 43:37Speaker 04

  It's original.

• 43:38Speaker 08

  The whiplash theorem.

• 43:39Speaker 07

But if it's based on their own life, it's not original?

• 43:42Speaker 04

  I didn't say that.

• 43:43Speaker 08

Well, I think that we're still negotiating.

• 43:44Speaker 04

Oh, well, we can still negotiate that. Okay.

• 43:47Amanda Dobbins?

  All right.

• 43:47Speaker 07

Feels like we're leaning toward allowing.

• 43:49Sean Fennessey?

That was a very beautiful tribute.

• 43:50Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, it's really beautiful, but it isn't a play.

• 43:52Sean Fennessey?

I'm slightly concerned that from a rules perspective.

• 43:55Amanda Dobbins?

  It does have to go.

• 43:56Speaker 08

You can take it in a different category, though.

• 43:58Sean Fennessey?

What I actually, so I don't know enough about this.

• 44:00Speaker 05

  I'm on Joe's side, whatever.

• 44:02Sean Fennessey?

  Re-explain what transpired here.

• 44:04Speaker 08

  So, Lee Hall.

• 44:05Sean Fennessey?

Again, you'll have to make like several hundred hours of podcasts with Joanna for the next 12 months.

• 44:09Speaker 04

He's the nicest guy and he's a fucking assassin.

• 44:11Amanda Dobbins?

  He's an animal!

• 44:12Speaker 05

  You're a bloody animal. He's not, he's not nice.

• 44:14Amanda Dobbins?

  Awful.

• 44:14Speaker 05

Every time you get to the core of who Rob is, he's a sociopath.

• 44:20Speaker 08

I'm calling HR. Lee Hall wrote a play called Dancer. That play gets adapted into the movie Billy Elliot. That gets adapted into the play Billy Elliot.

• 44:28Amanda Dobbins?

It premiered as a rehearsed reading in 1998 at the Live Theater, so it wasn't even a full production.

• 44:34Speaker 05

  Leave Joe alone.

• 44:35Sean Fennessey?

  I think that that's.

• 44:37Speaker 05

  I don't like this.

• 44:37Sean Fennessey?

If this hasn't been staged, then I think that that is a loophole.

• 44:40Speaker 08

  Okay.

• 44:41Amanda Dobbins?

Thanks, Amanda. Rehearsed reading. I mean, I'm just reading box office, but I agree.

• 44:45Speaker 06

  Really came through for me.

• 44:46Speaker 08

So if you're a person out there watching.

• 44:47Amanda Dobbins?

In Newcastle upon Tyne also, so you know, like.

• 44:49Speaker 08

Who has a ticket stub to Billy Elliot, then Joe's draft is invalidated.

• 44:55Sean Fennessey?

Um. This is really dicey territory because like every movie is kind of based on an idea that someone had at any given time that when then went into a series of development. These are the pitfalls of this category. I'll make an allowance for Billy Elliot.

• 45:09Speaker 08

  Sure. Oh, wow.

• 45:11Speaker 04

  That's really big of you.

• 45:11Speaker 08

  How does that?

• 45:12Speaker 04

  Yeah, I'm team Joe here.

• 45:14Speaker 06

  So generous. Thank you.

• 45:15Sean Fennessey?

Well, you're gonna talk to him.

• 45:17Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, there are plenty of rehearsed readings for all sorts of original things.

• 45:20Speaker 04

Yeah, they rehearsed red hatefully, you know?

• 45:23Sean Fennessey?

They certainly did. That was also an original.

• 45:25Speaker 06

Wait, so you were, so you thought I would do Almost Famous first, Billy Elliot second?

• 45:28Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 45:29Speaker 06

Well, he knows my heart. It's really sweet.

• 45:30Speaker 07

That's beautiful. I had a theory, because I just, the love of the musical and the dance.

• 45:35Sean Fennessey?

  Knowing.

• 45:35Amanda Dobbins?

The end, when he's in Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake and his dad cries and gasps when he makes the leap.

• 45:41Speaker 04

  Forgot about that.

• 45:42Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, my God.

• 45:44Sean Fennessey?

  Okay, Van, you're up.

• 45:45Speaker 05

Alright, so, uh, for my first pick, it's gonna be symbolic, because I know I'm gonna get the movie that I want, um, after Amanda's two picks, because it's coming right back to me.

• 45:54Speaker 07

  Interesting.

• 45:55Speaker 05

So I'm gonna pick Bamboozled in original.

• 45:57Speaker 07

Oh, nice. Wow, originals. There's a run.

• 45:59Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 46:00Speaker 05

Yeah, I'm gonna pick Bamboozled in original. It is the movie, the single movie that I watched the most this year. Blown away at Spike's audacity. I think it was partly the audacity of the movie that makes it one of Spike's lesser-lauded films, because as far as him just writing a movie that, you know, has the same ending issue that many Spike Lee movies have, right? Where he kinda drifts into the supernatural slash absurdist slash whatever, and people go, you know, whatever you throw in the basketball, and then having a guy catch it at the end, having Chutlesworth catch it at the end if he got game, or the wake-up from the end of School Days, where people are like, it's more of an allegorical ending. This one kinda has the same thing.

• 46:45Speaker 05

But what a kick in the nuts if you are a twenty-year-old black man, and you are endeavoring, wanting to endeavor into a career in entertainment. When you watch this movie, it completely reorients the way you look at yourself and the way you look at that entire industry. Just like a sublime absurdist tragedy. Love the film.

• 47:08Sean Fennessey?

Your favorite character is Michael Rapaport.

• 47:13Speaker 04

Yeah. That was sort of peak Rapaport for me.

• 47:17Sean Fennessey?

  More ways than one.

• 47:18Speaker 08

The corporate PR satire stuff in this movie is like, way too fucking applicable. Like, the playbook of just like, name-check Martin Luther King, say the word "community" a lot, wear the Kente cloth, it's like, oh, oh, oh, Lord.

• 47:31Speaker 05

He tries, he literally tries to do the one idea that he thinks is too far, that will surely get him fired, and it's the one that makes him into who he was. It was just, I still watch, it's fantastic to me.

• 47:43Sean Fennessey?

The one thing about this movie that was at the time kind of revolutionary and now is interesting to look back on is that it looks like it was shot with a potato. Right. And because it's that early DV that you get like with 28 Days Later. And there's a couple of movies that were shot with this really early DV style.

• 47:59Speaker 04

Oliver Stone U-turn, did he do that? Kind of like, there's like parts of it that feel that way. Or maybe even more like.

• 48:04Sean Fennessey?

Just different film stocks. Yeah. Which actually just makes it feel like surveillance footage. Right. Like a lot of handheld. And so you're like in those boardrooms where Damon Wayans is explaining his ideas. And you're like, is this like a Candid Camera episode or something? That feeling of disorientation, it works really great for this movie. Fantastic Tommy Davidson performance as well. Yeah. Like we just, I love the movie. Okay. Great pick. We're down to Amanda at the turn.

• 48:32Amanda Dobbins?

We cheer and we lead. Yes! You hate us because we're beautiful. Fuck yeah. We don't like you either. We're cheerleaders. Yeah, yeah, cheerleaders. Okay. I went to sleep last night and praying that I would get the turn so that I could do a Kiki doubleheader. Man. Obviously. Everyone is really being themselves so far. Thank you so much, everyone. Number one pick in drama will be The Virgin Suicides. Hi. Sofia Coppola's directorial debut, which premiered at Cannes in 1999, but it was not eligible for the 1999 draft, as I made Rob Mahoney very aware of. Yeah. Because it did not premiere in the US until April 2000.

• 49:13Amanda Dobbins?

This is an absolutely beautiful movie about being a teenager and not understanding things. And like deep sadness and the power of Josh Hartman 25 years ago, which remains today. I didn't get to go to, I'm just listening, come on. I have some good questions, but otherwise, yes.

• 49:31Sean Fennessey?

  For Trip Fontaine?

• 49:32Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 49:32Sean Fennessey?

  How dare you?

• 49:33Amanda Dobbins?

Oh, come on. First of all, when he's like walking down the hallway to Magic Man. And then obviously with the heart and she jumps into the car and they start making out.

• 49:41Sean Fennessey?

  It's an amazing thing.

• 49:42Amanda Dobbins?

That is some powerful stuff. I didn't get to go to the Academy screening with Kiki and Sofia, which like. It was okay with me. Uh, I don't like, I don't know if I want to be that close to greatness, but I did think Kiki looked great. Anyway, that's drama. Comedy. Yeah. Bring it on. Which like, I honestly, I was a little nervous that Joanna was gonna take Bring It On for me at some point. Um, this is, you know, I was, I turned sixteen in two thousand. One of the great teen comedies. Yeah. Incredible Kirsten Dunst performance, great Gabrielle Union, gave us Spirit Fingers, gave us, you know, one of the great movie openings of all time, which I do have memorized in full. I just gave you guys a snippet there. Uh, you're welcome. The floor is yours. Yeah. Yeah.

• 50:27Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, the floor is yours. Continue.

• 50:29Speaker 06

  For the movies as well.

• 50:30Sean Fennessey?

Take an AP class on the film Bring It On.

• 50:32Amanda Dobbins?

No, but do you know actually that like at a pep rally at my high school, the actual cheerleaders did perform that opening? I was not a cheerleader, no. Uh, no, I was on cross country.

• 50:41Sean Fennessey?

  Were you a cultural appropriator?

• 50:43Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah. Also not that. Though I did live in Atlanta, so, you know. Um, it really, really funny, like, smart teen movie. Great. I paid, I prefer this to Ant-Man, thanks to all of you. Um, and I feel great about getting it.

• 51:00Speaker 08

It's bonkers to me that Bring It On was not a blockbuster. Cause speaking of movies like did numbers on the sleepover circuit. I, I don't understand how this wasn't a bigger theater hit.

• 51:10Sean Fennessey?

Were you bumping Bring It On?

• 51:11Speaker 06

Yeah, was this, was this a big one?

• 51:12Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, oh, yes.

• 51:13Speaker 08

But like, this movie was everywhere. You could not avoid it.

• 51:16Amanda Dobbins?

  In Reisterstown, Maryland?

• 51:17Speaker 05

  It was, yeah, it was.

• 51:19Speaker 06

And now, now a queer classic.

• 51:21Sean Fennessey?

Now a queer, queer classic as well. Um, okay, Van, we're back to you.

• 51:26Speaker 05

  The only time I'm torn.

• 51:27Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh.

• 51:29Sean Fennessey?

I feel like I know something.

• 51:30Speaker 05

I thought you were like, I'm gonna get this. I know. But now I'm thinking about another movie that I would really love to have, but I'm gonna go with my first heart. I'm taking Traffic Off The Board and I'll.

• 51:38Sean Fennessey?

  Oh, interesting.

• 51:39Amanda Dobbins?

  Wow, no.

• 51:41Sean Fennessey?

That isn't what I thought you were gonna do.

• 51:43Speaker 05

Um, no, because there's another film that, that I wanted, but I gotta, I gotta take Traffic Off The Board. For what category? Ask Oscar. Take an Oscar, take an Oscar. Uh, Baton Rouge. I'm only, the only time I'm gonna be, get to draft Baton Rouge is, is this, uh, Steven Soderbergh, Baton Rouge. Um, but more so like, you know, I love the movie from the moment that I saw it. Ensemble, cast, uh. It seemed like a very important film to watch at that time, that it was saying something really important. And turning you on to something that you kind of didn't realize was going on. So first time I I was really thought of drug cartels as being Mexican and not like Colombian.

• 52:27Sean Fennessey?

  Mm hmm.

• 52:27Speaker 05

You know what I mean? Like, the movie was saying something and like diving deep into a world. And took me in the middle of the world that made me uncomfortable, particularly the Amanda Seyfried, like all of that stuff.

• 52:38Sean Fennessey?

  Like Erica Christians.

• 52:39Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 52:40Amanda Dobbins?

  Put some respect on Swimfan.

• 52:42Speaker 05

Look, too blonde from the same, I always give.

• 52:44Sean Fennessey?

Don't you hate that, though? Like, when you're promoted to drug czar and then Topher Grace gets your daughter hooked on crack?

• 52:49Speaker 04

And then Topher Grace has the temerity to be like, whoa, whoa, whoa, back, back, man.

• 52:53Speaker 05

  Back up.

• 52:54Speaker 04

What would it be like if a hundred black guys went into a white neighborhood asking for drugs?

• 52:58Speaker 05

I felt him. But it, um, but even that portrayal, like, I'm telling you.

• 53:03Sean Fennessey?

This was mind blowing if you were watching that Seventy Show, by the way, that he showed up in this form.

• 53:08Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 53:08Speaker 07

So. Yeah, he's like, I'd like to take a hit. Here's what I'd like to try. Let's have sex and take a hit when we both come.

• 53:18Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 53:18Sean Fennessey?

How did I know you were gonna quote that directly while looking me in the eyes on this podcast?

• 53:23Speaker 05

The way, the way this, the way this movie got sold to me, because the way this movie got sold to me is like, one of my homeboys was like, hey, yo. Chris Rock has been beaten. And I was like, what? It's like, he not the number one crackhead no more. When you see the white girl in traffic, that's the number one crackhead ever. And I had to go see the number one crackhead.

• 53:44Speaker 04

  Check it out.

• 53:44Speaker 05

Yeah. And so I went and saw the movie. Fantastic. A movie that holds up is as good today as it was then.

• 53:50Speaker 04

Let's just shout out a couple of things in this. Cliff Martinez's score, he blacked out. It's amazing. It's just gorgeous. The fact that Silverberg's running Michael Douglas up and down these streets with like a handheld camera.

• 54:01Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 54:01Speaker 04

Clifton Collins is incredible in this. Benicio, obviously, amazing.

• 54:04Speaker 05

  Don Cheadle.

• 54:05Speaker 04

  Um, Cheadle's amazing in this.

• 54:07Amanda Dobbins?

Have you seen Phineas and the Sheik yet?

• 54:08Speaker 04

And this is my favorite Catherine Zeta Jones.

• 54:09Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, Catherine Zeta Jones.

• 54:11Speaker 05

  The peak of her career.

• 54:12Amanda Dobbins?

That's disrespectful to Ocean's Eleven. Um, Benicio's amazing and.

• 54:15Sean Fennessey?

So when this movie came out, I had the same reaction as you. I was like, this movie is important. And I had that classic, like. Reddit conspiracy brain of like, it is all connected. The drug goes all the way to the top and then all the way down. You know, when you're 16 and you're like, this has revealed something really profound. And then, you know, for the intervening 15 or 15 years, I was like, ah, this movie's like a little overrated. And it feels very schematic and I can feel the screenplay when I'm watching it. Van Gogh and. And then I would watch it again a few years ago and I was like, actually, no, this is, he's right. Everything is all connected. The performances in this movie are incredible. Like this is some of the best acting I think sort of works ever gotten. So.

• 54:49Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 54:50Sean Fennessey?

Great pick. Tough for CR. Tough for CR.

• 54:52Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 54:53Sean Fennessey?

  Joanna.

• 54:53Speaker 06

Rough. Um, Howard, do you know what I'm picking next?

• 54:58Speaker 07

I actually have a theory. I'll, I'll be honest about whether I'm right after you make the pick.

• 55:01Speaker 06

Okay. So for a long time I would walk around talking about my top five.

• 55:04Speaker 07

I knew it. This was my prediction for your draft is that it would be very musically inclined.

• 55:09Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 55:09Speaker 07

Because there are a lot of great music movies.

• 55:12Speaker 06

What am I, what am I picking?

• 55:13Speaker 07

  You're picking High Fidelity.

• 55:14Speaker 06

Oh, I'm not picking High Fidelity.

• 55:15Speaker 07

  Oh.

• 55:18Speaker 07

  I know, I know.

• 55:19Amanda Dobbins?

But top five, I do understand.

• 55:22Speaker 05

Now somebody else is gonna grab it.

• 55:24Speaker 06

  I understand.

• 55:24Speaker 05

By the way, that was the other movie. It was between Traffic and High Fidelity.

• 55:27Speaker 07

I'm, I'm shocked that that's not what you're picking. Okay. Well, their top five.

• 55:31Speaker 06

Uh, I would, I would talk about my top five favorites of all time. Two of them was, were from the year 2000, Almost Famous and this other one that I'm gonna say. Another one was from 2001 and then it was a rotating other two. And this is, I don't know if it's just because like, I was working in a movie theater or whatever. Anyway, point being.

• 55:46Sean Fennessey?

  Requiem for a Dream.

• 55:47Speaker 06

  It's a brother.

• 55:47Speaker 07

  Oh, brother. Yeah.

• 55:49Speaker 06

  It's a brother.

• 55:49Speaker 07

Oh. It's my, like, one of my dad's favorite movies.

• 55:51Speaker 06

Uh, I, uh, in, I'm taking an Oscar. And, uh.

• 55:56Speaker 07

  Great fucking pick.

• 55:57Speaker 06

I love this movie with my whole entire heart. Um, I think this is, this is my favorite George Clooney. Uh, this is where I, I was introduced to one of my favorite people, Tim Blake Nelson.

• 56:09Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 56:09Speaker 06

Um, this is an incredible Coen Brothers joint. Uh, we're basing it off a myth.

• 56:15Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 56:15Speaker 06

We're, uh, changing everyone's relationship with bluegrass music.

• 56:20Sean Fennessey?

  Mm-hmm.

• 56:21Speaker 06

And it looks like a million bucks and I, I love this movie.

• 56:25Speaker 07

I did know that this was a favorite of yours. It is also a favorite of Barry Rubin's, My Beloved Father. You guys have a lot in common as we frequently discuss.

• 56:31Speaker 06

Yeah, Barry and I are one.

• 56:32Speaker 07

It does still fit the, Joe is gonna pick movies with songs in them.

• 56:36Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 56:36Speaker 07

The musicals. So, yeah. Great pick.

• 56:39Speaker 06

  Love it.

• 56:40Amanda Dobbins?

You're really, the laptop thing has psyched you out.

• 56:43Speaker 04

Because I had a vision of how this round was gonna go and Van and Joe completely chopped. Cause you thought you were gonna be able to pick Joe too. I'm like the night in Monty.

• 56:52Speaker 06

That's how I feel when you, this is how I feel every time I draft with the CR, cause you pick, you can count on me and I was like, no one's gonna pick that.

• 56:57Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 56:57Speaker 06

I got that one easy and then Sierra's like, number one.

• 56:59Speaker 04

I thought I was gonna get O Brother in this round, so I'm gonna do a little bit of, and I was just making sure that I was right about something, which is that.

• 57:06Speaker 06

  Shit.

• 57:07Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 57:07Speaker 04

Perfect Storm was nominated for some Oscars.

• 57:09Amanda Dobbins?

  Thank God. Thank God.

• 57:11Speaker 04

  Should've been nominated.

• 57:12Amanda Dobbins?

I didn't even put it on my list because if anyone but you got it, I was gonna be, yes, do it, come on.

• 57:18Speaker 04

I feel like I've now, I've lost touch with the actual monologue where it's just about, it's Diane Lane's letter to Mark Wahlberg as he gets, uh, killed.

• 57:27Sean Fennessey?

By the gigantic wave at the end.

• 57:28Speaker 04

By a gigantic wave, she's like, Bobby, you and me, a fresh start, two cuttings up in this little apartment.

• 57:36Amanda Dobbins?

Really strong, really strong stuff, yeah.

• 57:38Speaker 06

The denim cutoff shorts as you're, as you were saying that.

• 57:41Speaker 04

This movie rocks, uh, Clooney, Wahlberg, uh, what? Wait, you're picking this as your Oscar nomination? Yeah, sound editing.

• 57:50Sean Fennessey?

Diane Lane is probably your deepest bag. That's like, that is.

• 57:53Amanda Dobbins?

I mean. Nothing but respect for that.

• 57:56Speaker 04

Yeah. She's also, she's up in the crow's nest just crushing PBRs and Narragansett.

• 58:02Amanda Dobbins?

  Your dream.

• 58:03Sean Fennessey?

I don't think Narragansett was around the beer at that time.

• 58:06Speaker 04

  Was it?

• 58:06Sean Fennessey?

  I don't think so.

• 58:07Speaker 04

Narragansett, wasn't like, don't they drink that in Jaws?

• 58:10Sean Fennessey?

I don't think so, but maybe they do.

• 58:12Speaker 04

Uh, I actually think that they probably do.

• 58:15Amanda Dobbins?

  Narragansett beer.

• 58:16Speaker 06

You think Diane Lane is the deepest?

• 58:18Amanda Dobbins?

They like invented Narragansett beer in like 2003.

• 58:21Speaker 04

You think it's like a fake Budweiser?

• 58:23Amanda Dobbins?

  1890 in Cranston, Rhode Island.

• 58:25Speaker 06

You think Diane Lane's the deepest bag and not the sea?

• 58:28Speaker 04

  As a miss.

• 58:29Speaker 06

Well, I think Life is Love is Lady might be the sea.

• 58:32Amanda Dobbins?

It was also nominated for best visual effects.

• 58:34Speaker 04

Yeah, so double Oscar nominee and honestly, in terms of my heart, it could have, it could have gotten more.

• 58:39Speaker 05

  I've never understood this movie.

• 58:40Speaker 04

  Why not?

• 58:41Speaker 05

It is such a fucking bummer, like a ridiculous. Bummer of all bummers. When I seen this, I did not know that they were gonna die.

• 58:50Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 58:50Speaker 05

And then I gotta watch his dumb ass be in the water at the end of the movie. Like, like, just, just, I'm, I'm like, so I'm, I'm wondering like what's gonna happen, right? His stupid ass is floating around in the water at the end of the movie.

• 59:02Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 59:03Speaker 05

Doing the whole thing. I'm like, oh, so they just, they, they fucking drowned? They died?

• 59:07Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 59:07Speaker 05

And I still can't make my peace with it. Like, why? Like, what was the point of me watching?

• 59:11Speaker 04

Fishing. They had to get the good tuna.

• 59:13Speaker 05

Yeah, yeah, I get it. I watched it. I've tried. They had a black eye with him?

• 59:16Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 59:17Speaker 05

This nigga got fucked over for no reason. What, you, you guys can laugh at that. It's okay.

• 59:21Speaker 04

They all signed up with the ashes.

• 59:23Speaker 05

It's, it's, I, I, I get it, but like, that's, that's the type of shit that you, that you watch that? And you go, nah, if it's three white boys and me going out, I'm not going. I'm not going fishing.

• 59:34Speaker 04

There was only one boat, though.

• 59:35Speaker 05

I get it, but like, I, I've tried, cuz they said, I remember somebody saying that this movie was like...

• 59:41Speaker 04

It's, you know, it's based on a real story, too.

• 59:42Speaker 05

Right. It was, but it was gonna be like, it was epic, like Titanic or something like that. I went out to see it.

• 59:48Speaker 04

It was Titanic for dudes, yeah.

• 59:49Speaker 05

  There you go. Okay, cool.

• 59:50Speaker 08

Guys being dudes on it. Like, it's Glenn Barry, Glenn Ross on a boat, but dumber.

• 59:54Speaker 07

  Titanic's not Titanic for dudes.

• 59:55Speaker 04

No, I think Titanic's Titanic for everybody, but for dudes who love deep sea fishing, it's, this is Titanic.

• 1:00:00Speaker 08

How do you think you would do on a sword boat?

• 1:00:01Speaker 04

Wouldn't, I'll never find out. I'm not like a big boat guy, honestly.

• 1:00:09Sean Fennessey?

  I'm gonna, I'm gonna draft a movie.

• 1:00:10Speaker 04

  Good, let's go.

• 1:00:11Sean Fennessey?

Do you have anything else left to say about Perfect Storm?

• 1:00:12Speaker 04

I think I've said it all. I've drafted it like fifteen times.

• 1:00:16Sean Fennessey?

Um, in original, I'm taking Unbreakable, which is what I thought you were gonna take.

• 1:00:21Speaker 05

  Uh, yeah.

• 1:00:22Sean Fennessey?

And I guess there's an, an original running going here, and I rewatched this movie last night.

• 1:00:27Speaker 07

You got fucked on this category. It's really good.

• 1:00:28Sean Fennessey?

This movie's amazing. This movie looks amazing. Obviously, M. Night Shyamalan, immediately after The Sixth Sense, follows this up. With an original story that has deep roots in comic book storytelling. I forgot about this whole.

• 1:00:42Speaker 06

  The structure?

• 1:00:43Sean Fennessey?

No, just the whole like explanation, the title cards at the beginning of the movie about comic books and comic book collecting and storytelling. But just a fascinating movie, like one of Bruce Willis's best performances, easily one of Sam Jackson's best performances. He's amazing. His glass, I'd forgotten how like chilling that opening sequence is when glass is born. And his brother is like holding him and Aiman Walker comes in, who was on Oz at the time. And I was like, this is probably the next great American actor. I don't know what the hell happened to Aiman Walker. I don't even think he's American. Is he American? But you mean.

• 1:01:14Speaker 04

Aiman Walker was like your Boyd Holbrugstock.

• 1:01:16Sean Fennessey?

He was. He was. I was like, I truly.

• 1:01:18Speaker 05

If you ever wa- if you watch him in Oz, because he was the leader of the Muslims, right? Yeah, and he was, he was powerful.

• 1:01:23Sean Fennessey?

  Super powerful.

• 1:01:24Speaker 06

  This is my second.

• 1:01:24Sean Fennessey?

I don't understand why, why he's not a huge famous actor.

• 1:01:30Speaker 05

On the ringer while we stay away from Oz. Oz is a very incredible television show.

• 1:01:34Sean Fennessey?

  I loved it.

• 1:01:35Speaker 04

Oh, Bill would start like a dedicated Oz feed tomorrow.

• 1:01:37Speaker 06

Bill and I were talking about a completely different show on prestige yesterday, and he's like, let's talk about Oz for a second.

• 1:01:42Sean Fennessey?

I think Oz might be one of the first things that Bill and I connected on, because we have like, it's like been a, I've, I've visited the set of Oz when I was in high school as well.

• 1:01:48Speaker 05

  So fucking weird.

• 1:01:49Sean Fennessey?

  Something that my uncle won.

• 1:01:50Speaker 06

  You did what?

• 1:01:51Sean Fennessey?

I visited the set of Oz.

• 1:01:53Speaker 06

  You did what?

• 1:01:54Speaker 05

You just go there, you see some guy on guy assault. We didn't like.

• 1:01:59Sean Fennessey?

There was no like challenger crucifying anybody on the day I visited it. But it was like every other episode. Yeah, it was.

• 1:02:06Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:02:07Sean Fennessey?

Emerald City, I'll never forget it. I saw it in person. Uh, okay, that's my pick.

• 1:02:12Speaker 05

Do I have, I have a super hot take that no one in the world agrees with.

• 1:02:15Speaker 06

  About Unbreakable?

• 1:02:15Speaker 05

Yeah. After all of these years, it's his best movie to me.

• 1:02:20Speaker 06

  Oh.

• 1:02:20Speaker 05

It, it, it's, okay, so no, so.

• 1:02:23Speaker 04

  Do you think Trapp is?

• 1:02:23Speaker 05

So it's, it's his best movie. I'll tell you why. If you go back and you watch the Sixth Sense, the Sixth Sense is like.

• 1:02:30Sean Fennessey?

  It's a diamond.

• 1:02:31Speaker 05

It, it, it is at the same time, from start to finish. From start to finish, Unbreakable is a superior movie. It tells to me a more brooding, the script is tighter, the character development is more direct. And I think whereas the twist at the end of Sixth Sense is all time movie stuff, the twist at the end of Unbreakable just, to me, solidifies the entire mythology of the movie.

• 1:02:59Sean Fennessey?

It's operatic high drama when you watch it now.

• 1:03:01Speaker 06

  It's a really good take. I don't buy it.

• 1:03:03Speaker 08

  Yeah.

• 1:03:04Sean Fennessey?

I don't agree with that aspect of it.

• 1:03:05Speaker 08

We've also heard you make this take about Signs. Like, I feel like you make the claim that a lot of Sean Wallace movies are his best.

• 1:03:09Speaker 05

  I'll make a change.

• 1:03:10Speaker 06

  Signs is his best, yeah.

• 1:03:12Speaker 07

People are allowed to change, Rob.

• 1:03:13Speaker 05

Do you guys like that happening?

• 1:03:15Speaker 06

  No. With the trees?

• 1:03:16Speaker 05

Tell you what, it's gotten better over the years.

• 1:03:21Speaker 05

When I first saw it, I didn't get it, but I watched it maybe like three or four months ago.

• 1:03:26Speaker 07

I probably saw Unbreakable in the theater seven to eight times.

• 1:03:28Sean Fennessey?

  It's extremely good.

• 1:03:30Speaker 07

Yeah, it was a craze, an absolute craze.

• 1:03:32Speaker 06

  Seven to eight times?

• 1:03:33Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 1:03:33Speaker 06

What movie have you seen the most?

• 1:03:34Speaker 07

  Revenge of the Sith.

• 1:03:36Speaker 06

  How many times?

• 1:03:36Speaker 07

In the movie theater? No idea. Couldn't possibly tell you. Couldn't possibly tell you.

• 1:03:42Sean Fennessey?

Well, Mallory, you can tell us your next pick.

• 1:03:43Speaker 07

  Nope, no, Rob.

• 1:03:45Sean Fennessey?

  Sorry, Rob.

• 1:03:45Speaker 07

Don't take the movies that I want to take.

• 1:03:47Speaker 08

The movie I'm gonna take is Zaren Brokovich. I'm gonna get my inner girl boss on a little bit.

• 1:03:53Sean Fennessey?

Oh, Jesus, why not your inner girl?

• 1:03:54Speaker 07

You really have arrived with a very particular energy today.

• 1:03:57Speaker 04

She's not really a girl boss until the end of the year.

• 1:04:00Speaker 07

They won't let her be a girl boss.

• 1:04:02Speaker 08

But what she sounds like shouting down lawyers, like, I think we've entered the zone.

• 1:04:05Speaker 07

  What category, Rob?

• 1:04:06Speaker 08

I'm gonna take it in Blockbuster, which feels a little flimsy to me at this point. I love how obsessed Soderbergh is with process, like we talked about with Traffic. What makes this movie great to me is the same thing that makes Ocean's Eleven great, which is like deep process, obsession with process, but also incredible charisma. Like, you are in the well with Julia Roberts pulling up dead frogs and shit. And it's like, who would you rather spend a movie with than that, in my opinion? So.

• 1:04:34Sean Fennessey?

I feel great taking this off the board. I don't understand what's going on with biker babysitter fairy godmother Aaron Eckhart in this movie.

• 1:04:40Speaker 06

It's a lot of bandana work. I think it's all perfect.

• 1:04:44Speaker 04

If I go to Turkey and get a hair transplant, I'm coming back with the Eckhart from this movie.

• 1:04:47Speaker 06

Yeah, the bandana. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, no. You can pull it off. Did we not think that Aaron Eckhart was gonna be the biggest thing in the whole world? He is magnetic in this movie.

• 1:04:57Speaker 05

He had a couple of starts and stops, though, because it was this, and then he was a little down for a while, and then.

• 1:05:02Speaker 04

What's the one where him and Swank go to the core of the earth?

• 1:05:05Sean Fennessey?

I believe it's called The Core.

• 1:05:07Speaker 06

  That would be scared me.

• 1:05:09Sean Fennessey?

In the Company of Men, you may recall, Neil and B is in the Company of Men. Maybe Neil and B will come up again during the podcast.

• 1:05:14Amanda Dobbins?

Which one is in The Company of Men? Is that also Topher Grace?

• 1:05:18Sean Fennessey?

  No, it's him and Matt.

• 1:05:21Speaker 05

In Good Company is a banger to me. I don't care what else.

• 1:05:23Sean Fennessey?

No, that's Your Friends and Neighbors before it was a TV show.

• 1:05:25Speaker 04

  Right.

• 1:05:27Speaker 06

  Hmm.

• 1:05:28Speaker 04

Rob, do you have another pick?

• 1:05:30Speaker 05

I want to shout out another environmental movie. You guys ever see 1998's A Civil Action with John Travolta?

• 1:05:39Sean Fennessey?

That's kind of the end of the super respectable John Travolta run, and then he goes off and makes like several insane movies in a row. I only know about this because on a text chain with friends, we were talking about Swordfish. And Swordfish was when Travolta was like fully deranged. And there's also a fully deranged Travolta movie in this year.

• 1:05:57Speaker 06

  There sure is.

• 1:05:57Sean Fennessey?

I don't think it will come up in the draft.

• 1:06:01Speaker 10

• 1:07:01Speaker 07

I know what I'm doing here. There are three movies that I would really like to be able to pick here. I can only pick two of them. I feel pretty confident Rob is gonna take the one I'm not picking, and I think Rob's draft is really good, so I'm a little bit bummed about that, but I have to follow my heart. I'm about to pick two, and this is not hyperbole, two of my 10 favorite movies ever, legitimately. So I just, I have to do it.

• 1:07:20Sean Fennessey?

Two of your 10 favorite movies ever?

• 1:07:22Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 1:07:23Sean Fennessey?

  Wow.

• 1:07:23Speaker 06

  See, 2000's not so bad.

• 1:07:25Speaker 04

You got two of your 10 favorite movies in the end of the second.

• 1:07:27Speaker 07

When I say them, you guys are gonna be like, yeah, I know that is true about you. You're not gonna be surprised by what I pick. You definitely won't be. Um, okay.

• 1:07:36Speaker 07

  In original.

• 1:07:39Speaker 07

So relieved to pick an original. This was really stressing me out. Okay, um, a lot of things were happening late in high school.

• 1:07:50Speaker 07

  In young men's basements.

• 1:07:51Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:07:51Speaker 04

  What?

• 1:07:52Speaker 07

A lot of things were happening in young men's basements in Roysters Town, Maryland.

• 1:07:55Speaker 04

  Were you there?

• 1:07:56Speaker 07

I was. You know, some, okay, the parents are upstairs, but like, sure, it's time for a blowjob, and then...

• 1:08:02Sean Fennessey?

  Jesus Christ!

• 1:08:04Speaker 07

Watch it snatch! Watch it snatch! I am taking snatch! As my original.

• 1:08:17Speaker 07

When I think, when I think back...

• 1:08:19Speaker 04

So were these happening at the same time?

• 1:08:21Speaker 07

  Often sequenced.

• 1:08:22Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:08:23Speaker 07

  Often sequenced.

• 1:08:24Speaker 06

I mean, um... Which comes first? Freezing. Which comes first?

• 1:08:29Sean Fennessey?

I like, I kinda wanna explore what you're talking about, but also really do not.

• 1:08:33Speaker 07

Well, you know, it's a safe space today among friends, and I'm being sincere. When I think back to late high school, I think about watching snatch in my high school boyfriend's basement and all the other things that we were doing down there. It's true. I will be taking that original. Uh, I will, I will not be naming him either. I will be going with Chris Ryan Rule, and I will not be naming him, though I'm very proud of him still.

• 1:08:54Speaker 06

Are you not good about invoking this and your dad's name in, in like, pretty quick succession?

• 1:08:59Speaker 07

Totally fine. Totally fine about it. They're totally fine.

• 1:09:02Speaker 04

We got, I bet the thing is like, we got the picture without it.

• 1:09:05Speaker 07

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I bet. Um, I, I love snatch. I've seen this movie a thousand times. I think I picked Lockstar when we did that draft. Like, I just, I love...

• 1:09:16Speaker 06

  You're a guy, Richard, girl.

• 1:09:17Speaker 07

Yeah, I just love these movies. They're endlessly entertaining to me.

• 1:09:20Speaker 04

I love that you're gonna try to talk about this movie now, as if that's...

• 1:09:24Speaker 07

You like Doug's? Um, this is like weirdly my favorite Brad Pitt performance ever. Not actually maybe, but I just love it. Uh, this movie is sensational, like the, um, bullet tooth Tony, you know, the fact that it says replica down the side of your gun and mine says desert eagle. Like, we were just walking around in high school quoting this movie to each other endlessly. It has like a real place in my heart. I rewatched it recently, still fucking holds up.

• 1:09:47Speaker 04

You know what, Mal? I really wanted this movie, but in so many ways.

• 1:09:52Speaker 07

I thought you were gonna take it.

• 1:09:54Sean Fennessey?

100 out of 100% chance I was getting it and I.

• 1:09:57Speaker 07

I thought for sure one of you was gonna take it in this round. I thought I didn't, I thought for sure.

• 1:10:00Speaker 06

  I almost took it.

• 1:10:01Speaker 07

Yeah, okay. Um, my next pick, and this is one that I don't think anyone will be, it's a fucking great movie.

• 1:10:06Sean Fennessey?

You kind of ruined it forever for me.

• 1:10:08Speaker 07

  I won't apologize.

• 1:10:12Speaker 05

  That was funny.

• 1:10:13Speaker 07

  Thank you, darling.

• 1:10:15Speaker 07

Uh, for my third pick here on the turn, I will be taking, as recently discussed on a memorable episode of Rewatchable, it's my favorite comedy ever, Best in Show. I fucking love this movie.

• 1:10:24Speaker 06

This I thought was gonna be your first.

• 1:10:25Speaker 07

  I, I.

• 1:10:26Sean Fennessey?

That's where I thought you were going.

• 1:10:27Speaker 07

If I, I don't know why my strategy kind of changed radically when I got the number one pick. If I had been like late in the first round, I probably would have taken this in the first round. So, um, the fact that I have the opportunity to take it here is a real delight to me. This movie, uh, I have like a vivid memory of watching this with my dad for the first time. He still quotes Harlem Pepper to me all the time. Nothing makes me laugh. Nothing is like a sure bet to make me crack up, like rib, uh, agony laughter, then watching Cookie try to walk after she twists her knee. It's just the best. I love Christopher Guest and this is my favorite Christopher Guest movie, so I'm thrilled. Taking that in comedy. Uh, I think it's gonna be a debacle for me while we get to the rest of my picks though.

• 1:11:06Sean Fennessey?

Well, your first three picks are bangers.

• 1:11:08Speaker 04

Your first three picks are bangers and you certainly won the anecdotal picks, so.

• 1:11:13Speaker 06

The breakout is, the social breakout is set, I think.

• 1:11:15Sean Fennessey?

Yes, well, I hope not. Um, we have one hour to complete this draft. Can we do it with all of these picks? I believe that we can. Rob, you are the first person.

• 1:11:26Speaker 07

Don't suppose we have time for a bathroom break? No?

• 1:11:28Speaker 04

I think people can get up and go and come back if they need to.

• 1:11:31Sean Fennessey?

Wow, that's actually quite fascinating. We've never done that before, but I actually would support it.

• 1:11:34Speaker 07

  I wouldn't dare.

• 1:11:36Speaker 04

Well, I'm gonna do it after I pick, so.

• 1:11:37Sean Fennessey?

It's kind of like getting up for the bathroom when you're seeing a movie. Yeah.

• 1:11:40Amanda Dobbins?

I also wouldn't. Oh, you mean while people are.

• 1:11:43Speaker 06

Why did you? I didn't have to clean the bathroom. Well, maybe.

• 1:11:45Sean Fennessey?

Well, you said you had a mop when people vomited, you know? It's that much of a reach?

• 1:11:50Amanda Dobbins?

  Thanks for your support.

• 1:11:51Sean Fennessey?

Okay, Rob, are you flummoxed by these last two picks?

• 1:11:53Speaker 08

I'm a little flummoxed just by some of the relative scarcity in some of these categories. So whether to go with like the movie I like more or the category I need more. I'm gonna go with American Psycho. Yeah. I'm gonna take it in drama.

• 1:12:05Speaker 06

  Wow, okay.

• 1:12:07Sean Fennessey?

  Is that a drama?

• 1:12:08Speaker 04

  Well, it's become a comedy.

• 1:12:09Sean Fennessey?

It's definitely is a comedy and is a thriller. I'm not sure that you can qualify it as a drama.

• 1:12:15Speaker 08

I'll take it in thriller. That's no problem.

• 1:12:16Sean Fennessey?

  Is it? Any disagreement there?

• 1:12:18Speaker 04

  I mean, I think it's a dark comedy.

• 1:12:19Amanda Dobbins?

  I'm okay with that.

• 1:12:20Speaker 04

If you wanted to take it there.

• 1:12:21Speaker 08

It's a dramedy or it's a drama of the soul, you know, like it's a man's. One long night.

• 1:12:26Amanda Dobbins?

I agree, Rob. I think it's cross category.

• 1:12:28Speaker 04

One of the greatest meme meme movies.

• 1:12:30Amanda Dobbins?

  I actually don't think that it's.

• 1:12:31Sean Fennessey?

It's very purposely designed as a satire.

• 1:12:34Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:34Sean Fennessey?

So I would argue it's not a drama.

• 1:12:36Speaker 08

  Absolutely fair.

• 1:12:37Speaker 05

The best Brett Easton Ellis, no?

• 1:12:40Sean Fennessey?

  Adaptation?

• 1:12:40Speaker 05

  Adaptation.

• 1:12:41Speaker 08

  I enjoy Rules of Attraction.

• 1:12:42Speaker 05

  Rules of Attraction.

• 1:12:43Speaker 08

  This clears it.

• 1:12:44Amanda Dobbins?

  No, this is.

• 1:12:45Sean Fennessey?

I think this is the best one.

• 1:12:46Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:46Speaker 06

  Where did you take this?

• 1:12:47Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, right.

• 1:12:48Speaker 04

  Is Luca gonna remake this?

• 1:12:50Amanda Dobbins?

  He says so.

• 1:12:50Sean Fennessey?

So, yeah, I don't know if that's necessary. This is really good. Um, it's not exactly the book, but it's pretty, it gets a lot of what is so funny and so smart about the book.

• 1:12:59Amanda Dobbins?

And like has lives on as a reference point and a life of its own.

• 1:13:03Sean Fennessey?

  And fail is unreal.

• 1:13:04Speaker 08

I think riffs on the things in the like sands down some badges from the book, heightens some other things, takes like the rodents out of it. Like there's some stuff that just needed to be out if you're gonna put this on screen.

• 1:13:15Sean Fennessey?

Okay, that's a good pick. That puts me in an interesting spot.

• 1:13:18Speaker 08

  Shout out to Hugo Lewis.

• 1:13:19Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:20Speaker 08

  Shout out to Chainsaws.

• 1:13:21Amanda Dobbins?

I didn't sing the Terrier song from Best in Show, um, but you know, that also, this really is a musical draft. Yeah, absolutely. The Terrier song.

• 1:13:30Speaker 06

In the year 2000, he started.

• 1:13:32Amanda Dobbins?

Sweet little winky. Sweet little winky.

• 1:13:35Sean Fennessey?

Uh, I will take a film that was referenced earlier. Another movie that I was like, I can't believe this is happening, that maybe at a time seemed great, then maybe was like a little problematic, but I think it circled back to being amazing, which is High Fidelity. Which is an amazing Americanization of an English novel about what it's like to work in a record store and what it means to be defined by your stuff. I'm sorry, Joanna, you're looking at me like I just killed.

• 1:13:59Speaker 06

No, no, no, no. This is the origin story of Joanna, the book was better Robinson. Like, I remember when I read the Hornby book and I was like. Yeah.

• 1:14:07Sean Fennessey?

  I don't even disagree.

• 1:14:08Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:14:09Speaker 07

The two most important Robs in the world, though. Rob Mahoney. And this Rob.

• 1:14:13Sean Fennessey?

We gotta stick up for each other. He's kind of a douchebag sometimes, but that's also kind of a point. I think he has some redeemable quality.

• 1:14:20Speaker 05

  That character is me.

• 1:14:23Sean Fennessey?

Van, you're kind of a douchebag sometimes.

• 1:14:25Speaker 06

  Don't do that to yourself.

• 1:14:26Speaker 05

I swear. When I, when I saw that movie, I was like, that, for all of the flaw, that character is, is me. As a, like, the, for the white boy deal, like, I connected so much to that character and still. Like, I make no apologies about it. Like, a lot of the stuff that he does in that movie, I would do.

• 1:14:48Sean Fennessey?

I don't think I realized, though, like, how smart the movie is about what a dipshit Rob is. When I was a teenager, I just didn't really, I got it in the book.

• 1:14:57Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:14:57Sean Fennessey?

And the movie, I think, because he kind of like tricked you with the Cusack casting. Because Cusack is usually this person that you're like, I'm so emotionally with the say anything guy. Even if he's a little crazy, I'm with him. But he's so, um, lost in the sauce.

• 1:15:12Speaker 05

Misplaced, righteous indignation, thinks he knows everything, knows nothing, has everybody on his side so they know the whole story.

• 1:15:20Sean Fennessey?

Yep. But him selling bad bands to people in stores is insane. That is one of the great flexes. And, I mean, you're, you're, you worked in record stores?

• 1:15:27Speaker 04

  I did.

• 1:15:27Sean Fennessey?

No, no love for this movie?

• 1:15:28Speaker 04

I love this film. I, I think I actually am more partial to the book.

• 1:15:31Sean Fennessey?

The book is better. The book is better.

• 1:15:33Speaker 04

But it was like, this was also like a very cool, like. Late period ninety, like it almost had like a lot of its roots in the nineties, but to see a lot of the Chicago indie rock scene in this film is a real, real hoot.

• 1:15:44Speaker 06

Would you reconsider your Rob rankings if I submitted, uh?

• 1:15:48Sean Fennessey?

  Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

• 1:15:49Speaker 06

Yeah, Zoe Kravitz's Rob from the great Hulu adaptation of Hypnotized.

• 1:15:53Speaker 07

You know how I feel about Zoe, my wife.

• 1:15:55Amanda Dobbins?

  That season was so good.

• 1:15:56Speaker 05

  I loved it.

• 1:15:57Amanda Dobbins?

  It was really, really good.

• 1:15:59Sean Fennessey?

I mean, wonderfully connected to the movie.

• 1:16:00Speaker 06

It's one of those baffling cancels.

• 1:16:02Speaker 05

I thought all the, I thought all the cha- the changes they made made sense.

• 1:16:06Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:16:07Speaker 05

About the, it was like blissfully contemporary in the way they went about it. All the performances were great. I don't know what happened.

• 1:16:14Speaker 06

I do not know why they canceled that.

• 1:16:16Sean Fennessey?

That was like one of those COVID things where it just something got lost in it.

• 1:16:21Speaker 05

And it had her, like they had like a legitimate movie person star and they didn't continue to do the show. It was just an odd decision.

• 1:16:30Sean Fennessey?

I'm taking this movie in comedy, by the way, Jack.

• 1:16:32Speaker 04

I, I love, I like really love that, that TV show.

• 1:16:35Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:16:35Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:16:36Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, it was very good.

• 1:16:36Amanda Dobbins?

Devine Joy Randolph dancing to, uh, Come on, Eileen.

• 1:16:39Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:16:39Amanda Dobbins?

  Just beautiful stuff.

• 1:16:42Sean Fennessey?

Um, okay, CR, you've got to pick.

• 1:16:44Speaker 04

In Blockbuster, I'll take Castaway. Uh, had to do it.

• 1:16:48Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:16:48Speaker 04

Um, you know, at the time, I think I saw this and I was like, that was pretty cool, but it's, this is one of the TNT ones for me. Where it's like over the years, just be like, oh, cool. This 20 minute section, that 20 minute section, incredible ending. The, the set pieces are amazing. Um, and it's an incredible Hanks run here and this is, how many people could carry this film, you know?

• 1:17:11Sean Fennessey?

I think it's the best plane crash sequence in a movie.

• 1:17:13Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:17:13Sean Fennessey?

I, I think the plane crash is wild.

• 1:17:15Speaker 07

How about the most meaningful relationship we've ever seen between two figures on screen?

• 1:17:19Speaker 05

  Wilson. Benjamin Wilson?

• 1:17:20Speaker 07

  Correct.

• 1:17:23Speaker 07

  I fucking, when Wilson.

• 1:17:25Sean Fennessey?

How many basement doings does this movie have?

• 1:17:27Speaker 07

  I mean, I can't.

• 1:17:28Speaker 05

  I can't.

• 1:17:29Speaker 07

It's very emotional watching Wilson bob away.

• 1:17:32Speaker 04

I bet. It was probably emotional for him too.

• 1:17:35Speaker 05

He had to let go of Wilson to be free though, man. Wilson was the last thing connecting him to the island.

• 1:17:39Speaker 07

  Painful.

• 1:17:40Sean Fennessey?

You know what? The other scene that jumped out to me when I watched it last year was when he tries to swim out.

• 1:17:44Speaker 07

Oh, I thought you were gonna say Lancing the Tooth with the, uh.

• 1:17:48Speaker 06

Was it all the FedEx bonkon?

• 1:17:50Sean Fennessey?

That didn't bother me. That didn't bother me at all. Um, okay. Joanna. Gonna run it.

• 1:17:55Speaker 06

Um, this is really tough because Blockbuster is getting quite spindly. Um.

• 1:18:05Speaker 06

So I think, I mean, I don't mean to be too on brand for our podcast, but I think I'll just take X-Men off the board. Interesting.

• 1:18:14Speaker 06

It is an incredibly important comic book movie. This is Patrick Stewart and. Uh huh. Ian McKellen, the origin of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, a role he is still playing to this day. Is that right?

• 1:18:28Speaker 05

  Adamantium.

• 1:18:29Speaker 06

  Okay, vibranium is what?

• 1:18:31Speaker 05

  Black Panther.

• 1:18:32Speaker 06

Okay. But which is stronger, Amanda? What do you think? Vibranium or Adamantium?

• 1:18:37Speaker 07

  I, that's, I have no idea. I can't.

• 1:18:39Speaker 06

It's a debate for the ages. So it's, it's okay that you don't have the answer.

• 1:18:43Sean Fennessey?

Hopefully we'll be able to talk about this for roughly the next 10 years on the podcast.

• 1:18:46Speaker 06

Very exciting. This is where a young Kevin Feige, who was working as an assistant for Lawrence Shula Donner, got his start and his connection to the Marvel world. So this is the origin story of Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios. And it's, you know, Marzen's a great, you know, a great Cyclops.

• 1:19:04Speaker 07

  The jawline.

• 1:19:06Sean Fennessey?

I was just talking to somebody about who the next Cyclops should be. I do, I want to have.

• 1:19:10Speaker 07

Well, Amanda's boy is like firmly rumored.

• 1:19:13Sean Fennessey?

  A B.

• 1:19:13Speaker 07

  Harris.

• 1:19:13Speaker 06

  Which one?

• 1:19:14Speaker 05

  Alordi?

• 1:19:15Speaker 06

  Harris Dickinson. Oh, really?

• 1:19:17Speaker 07

A lot of rumors about that. Some Patrick Schwarzenegger rumors.

• 1:19:20Speaker 05

  I've seen, I've seen.

• 1:19:21Speaker 06

  I've seen the Schwarzenegger rumors.

• 1:19:26Sean Fennessey?

  He was born to be.

• 1:19:27Speaker 06

Short side of his life awaited the Beatles. He can't do both.

• 1:19:29Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, yeah, no, I don't think Harris Dickinson would do it. Um, I love this movie when it came out. I was so happy.

• 1:19:34Speaker 06

  Oh my God.

• 1:19:35Sean Fennessey?

After 10 years of reading Wizard and dream casting in my mind and then getting Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart, I was like, this is crazy how good this is. And I didn't even really know who Hugh Jackman was. And he obviously was fantastic.

• 1:19:44Speaker 06

Chris, X-Men is off the board.

• 1:19:45Sean Fennessey?

So Chris, sorry, you can't take another Brian Singer film.

• 1:19:48Speaker 06

  I know, devastating for you.

• 1:19:51Sean Fennessey?

  Van, you're up.

• 1:19:52Speaker 04

He really peaked for Valkyrie anyway.

• 1:19:53Speaker 05

So I was going to take.

• 1:19:57Speaker 05

Um, I was going to take X-Men. Mm-hmm. Um, Blockbusters, anything over a hundred domestic, right? Yep, correct. Uh, so I'll take Remember the Titans.

• 1:20:08Amanda Dobbins?

  That's what I almost took.

• 1:20:09Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:20:09Amanda Dobbins?

I have to have X-Men. Delete.

• 1:20:11Speaker 05

Uh, not too much to talk about. Very affecting movie. I was shamed outside of City Place Theater, Baton Rouge. Me and Gino went to see Meet the, Meet the Parents. And when I left, we saw some of his friends, his frat brothers, and they was like, man, y'all didn't see Remember the Titans? And we was like, nah, we went to see Meet the Parents, and they made us feel less black.

• 1:20:37Amanda Dobbins?

And you, and you were, to be fair.

• 1:20:39Speaker 05

  For that night.

• 1:20:40Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:20:40Speaker 05

Uh, we, cause we was like, damn, we was like, man, you know, can you deal with this? Yeah. You know what I mean? They treated you like the black eye in a perfect storm. Right, you know? That guy got drowned. Uh, but yeah, so Remember the Titans. Not much to say about the movie.

• 1:20:54Amanda Dobbins?

  Great movie.

• 1:20:55Speaker 05

  Great film.

• 1:20:55Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, wonderful movie.

• 1:20:56Speaker 05

  Um, so yeah.

• 1:20:57Amanda Dobbins?

  Wow, blockbuster run here.

• 1:20:59Speaker 06

Incredible, uh, musical sequence with Ryan Gosling and, uh, yeah.

• 1:21:03Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:03Speaker 05

A lot of young stars in it.

• 1:21:05Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:21:05Speaker 05

A lot of young stars that we would hear for, from, from years to come. Okay, Blockbusters are flying fast. Amanda, you've got two picks here.

• 1:21:12Amanda Dobbins?

I do. Um, it's not gonna be a perfect game for me, but I am gonna go three for three in original. I will be taking Center Stage. You are entirely yourself today. Exactly. Are you ki- are you kidding? I love it. One of the great dance films.

• 1:21:27Speaker 04

Had to say, I didn't know what was gonna happen if any of these three.

• 1:21:30Amanda Dobbins?

Went to someone else. I, I know. Nobody, nobody would have dared. That, um, well, you mentioned Center Stage at a, uh. I know, to get like. At a sleepover, right. Or, or, check on the room.

• 1:21:40Speaker 05

  I've seen it.

• 1:21:41Amanda Dobbins?

And, and the temperature drops, and you're like, no.

• 1:21:43Speaker 05

This is not the, okay, so there were two.

• 1:21:45Amanda Dobbins?

It's palpable. It's not Julia Stiles, that saved the last dance.

• 1:21:47Speaker 05

No, no, no, no, no, but there were two ballet movies.

• 1:21:50Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:50Speaker 05

One was the company and then the other one was center stage. One was with Neve Campbell, that was the company.

• 1:21:56Speaker 07

  This is always on.

• 1:21:56Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:22:00Amanda Dobbins?

Oh, yeah, no, he's going to. Okay. I'm hosting now. Um, oh, great. Oh, congratulations. Amanda, you've got another pick, I think. Thank you. Yeah, I do. So this one, um, Oscar nominee is actually also getting pretty thin because so many of the Oscar nominees have gone in other categories. Rob took my number one pick, of course, because he's, um, you know, undefeated. Yeah, at ruining, uh, I was gonna take Aaron Breckovich. Um, so I'm gonna do Wonder Boys.

• 1:22:28Speaker 06

  Oh.

• 1:22:32Amanda Dobbins?

  Right?

• 1:22:32Speaker 05

  A forgotten big deal movie.

• 1:22:35Speaker 07

  I love it.

• 1:22:36Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, I think so. And, um, you know, Michael Douglas, obviously, young Katie Holmes.

• 1:22:41Speaker 07

Which category you said? Uh, Oscar?

• 1:22:43Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, Oscar nominee. And, and by the way, do you know what Oscar it won?

• 1:22:47Speaker 05

  Wonder Boys?

• 1:22:48Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah. I'm pointing this right at you. It won original song written by? Bob Dylan. Bob Dylan.

• 1:22:55Speaker 07

  Bobby D.

• 1:22:55Amanda Dobbins?

  Bobby D.

• 1:22:56Speaker 07

  Bobby D.

• 1:22:58Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, this, I, this is like a, I guess they still do make like, you know, East Coast academic, you know, in trouble movies. Because they're making one Luca Wadimino coming in the, in the fall. Um, but yeah, for now.

• 1:23:14Speaker 07

  They're great picks.

• 1:23:14Amanda Dobbins?

But it seemed like, I saw this at the right age, you know, like if I saw this now, but it would be good.

• 1:23:21Speaker 07

Had you read the book before?

• 1:23:21Amanda Dobbins?

No, it's a Michael Shaiman book, right?

• 1:23:23Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 1:23:23Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah. Um, I was impressed. I, I, another like, oh, I think I'm very grown up and I'm a, and I'm a grown up and I'm watching like grown up movies. Matters of the heart and such with, with real, with real actors.

• 1:23:34Speaker 07

Pre, um, hi, like do a digital highlight on your Kindle and, you know, still the analog, obviously, you know, turning over a lot of pages like these are profound thoughts.

• 1:23:42Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:42Speaker 07

That I need to like remember now I'm too old and brain dead to actually recall, but yeah, there was a lot of those in this tome.

• 1:23:48Speaker 06

Uh, excellent robe goals in this movie, the fluffy pink robe.

• 1:23:51Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:23:52Speaker 06

Come on, yeah. Michael Douglas wears for most of the movie.

• 1:23:53Amanda Dobbins?

I, I mean, his life, it's not actually what I want. It gets a little messy, but, uh.

• 1:23:58Speaker 07

  It does.

• 1:23:58Amanda Dobbins?

You know, you'd like to, I, I was at the age where I was like, oh, is that, you know, what adults can do with their lives? You know, if I, if, if I, if I ace all my AP classes, like, can this happen?

• 1:24:08Speaker 07

  And then you did.

• 1:24:08Amanda Dobbins?

  Exactly.

• 1:24:09Speaker 07

  Fives only.

• 1:24:10Speaker 06

  And then you did.

• 1:24:10Amanda Dobbins?

Five so. Yeah. Uh, Bam, we're going back to you now, man.

• 1:24:14Speaker 05

  So because I.

• 1:24:16Amanda Dobbins?

I didn't get to go to the basement, but you know.

• 1:24:18Speaker 05

Because I should have seen it that night and comedy is about to get uh very contracted. It's not that many comedies off the board. I'm gonna take Meet the Parents.

• 1:24:29Speaker 06

  Hmm.

• 1:24:30Amanda Dobbins?

  This is a great movie.

• 1:24:31Speaker 05

Yeah, I'm gonna take Meet the Parents.

• 1:24:33Sean Fennessey?

  Fuck, I missed Wonder Boys.

• 1:24:35Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, we had a great, we all had a great time.

• 1:24:37Speaker 06

Yeah, we had a great time.

• 1:24:37Sean Fennessey?

  I just watched it yesterday.

• 1:24:39Amanda Dobbins?

  It's a wonderful film, it's so good.

• 1:24:40Sean Fennessey?

  Shit.

• 1:24:41Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:24:42Sean Fennessey?

You know what's a great idea for a movie? Sorry to interrupt you, Ben, when it's just like this guy's having a bad weekend.

• 1:24:46Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:46Sean Fennessey?

That's just a good idea for a movie.

• 1:24:47Amanda Dobbins?

  Exactly, and it's Michael Douglas.

• 1:24:48Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, okay, I'm sorry.

• 1:24:49Speaker 05

I don't have much else to say about it. I was unprepared for how hysterical the film was gonna be.

• 1:24:54Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:55Speaker 05

  When I saw it.

• 1:24:56Amanda Dobbins?

  It was really funny, yeah.

• 1:24:57Speaker 05

You know, it was the era of great comedies that were aimed right for my demo. Um, Mel Nurse Focker, Robert De Niro, career resurgence right there as a comedian coming off the heels of Analyze This. Uh, but no, I I love the movie, so big deal. Meet the Parents, easy.

• 1:25:18Speaker 04

Lot, lot of Blockbuster getting super thin.

• 1:25:20Speaker 05

  Yeah, that was comedy.

• 1:25:21Speaker 04

Yeah, but that was, that was one of the big.

• 1:25:23Amanda Dobbins?

I have not taken a Blockbuster, so I am concerned.

• 1:25:26Speaker 04

  Okay. Uh.

• 1:25:27Speaker 05

I'm gonna take a Blockbuster that no one will care to take.

• 1:25:30Amanda Dobbins?

  It is what it is.

• 1:25:30Speaker 04

  Didn't you already take?

• 1:25:31Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, you already have a.

• 1:25:32Speaker 05

  Very true.

• 1:25:34Speaker 04

You could still take another Blockbuster.

• 1:25:35Speaker 05

  I am gonna take another.

• 1:25:36Speaker 04

That would be a wild card.

• 1:25:37Speaker 08

If you did that to now.

• 1:25:38Speaker 05

  Right.

• 1:25:39Speaker 04

  Uh, okay. Joanna, you're up.

• 1:25:41Speaker 06

Okay, um, so this draft isn't going very well for me, so I'm just gonna be purely myself.

• 1:25:46Speaker 05

  Do it.

• 1:25:47Speaker 06

Uh, and say in comedy, I would like State and Maine.

• 1:25:50Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:25:50Speaker 06

  That I love.

• 1:25:52Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 1:25:53Speaker 06

Uh, if I couldn't get one Philip Seymour Hoffman movie this year, I'll take the other, so um, I love, I love this movie.

• 1:25:59Speaker 04

  This movie is awesome.

• 1:26:00Speaker 06

  Really good movie.

• 1:26:01Amanda Dobbins?

  It's a great pick.

• 1:26:02Speaker 04

Well, this was Mamet, uh, what had he done like right around this time? Like, is this?

• 1:26:07Speaker 06

  The Winslow Boy?

• 1:26:08Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:26:09Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:26:09Speaker 04

But this is after Spanish Prisoner and stuff? Okay.

• 1:26:12Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:26:14Amanda Dobbins?

  Talk about a good movie.

• 1:26:16Speaker 04

  Spanish prisoner?

• 1:26:17Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 1:26:17Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:26:18Speaker 06

  She loves a con.

• 1:26:20Speaker 07

  The language.

• 1:26:20Speaker 05

I love con men movies. They don't make them enough. We've talked, we've talked, I've talked about this before.

• 1:26:26Sean Fennessey?

Just talk to my guy in a cage about this.

• 1:26:28Speaker 06

What about, what about a con man who's having one bad weekend?

• 1:26:30Speaker 07

Now they just make them like integral boss Netflix.

• 1:26:32Speaker 05

Yeah, like, so you think they, that, keep telling about the one on, on Apple a couple of years ago, uh, Sharper.

• 1:26:38Sean Fennessey?

  Sharper, yeah.

• 1:26:39Speaker 05

  That was pretty good.

• 1:26:40Sean Fennessey?

  Yep.

• 1:26:40Speaker 05

But, you know, you didn't like it? But.

• 1:26:44Speaker 07

  I think she's just concerned that I, I really.

• 1:26:45Speaker 06

No, I can't see anything and it always, it always concerns me.

• 1:26:48Speaker 05

  Oh.

• 1:26:49Speaker 07

  I can't see anything.

• 1:26:50Speaker 06

  She was squinting.

• 1:26:51Speaker 07

Do you have like a fear?

• 1:26:51Speaker 06

  Squinting there.

• 1:26:52Speaker 07

I just haven't been to the eye doctor in like fourteen years.

• 1:26:55Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:26:55Speaker 07

Oh, okay. Yeah, but like, are you afraid of it?

• 1:26:58Sean Fennessey?

Thirteen months and haven't been to the eye doctor in fourteen years.

• 1:27:01Speaker 07

Don't. You can't see that screen. I support you on that one. It's fine.

• 1:27:04Speaker 06

  That's great.

• 1:27:05Speaker 07

Keep brushing, keep flossing, you'll be fine.

• 1:27:06Speaker 06

  She's, she's beautiful and luminous.

• 1:27:08Speaker 07

I can make out like hues.

• 1:27:09Sean Fennessey?

Can we do a fake pod taping where we bring in an optometrist to meet Mallory?

• 1:27:13Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:27:15Sean Fennessey?

Um, how do you watch the films?

• 1:27:17Speaker 07

  Hmm.

• 1:27:18Sean Fennessey?

  Not an issue.

• 1:27:18Speaker 07

  With passion and conviction.

• 1:27:20Speaker 06

  Their TV is really big.

• 1:27:21Speaker 04

And, and two feet from the screen.

• 1:27:23Speaker 07

It's tuning very close to our television.

• 1:27:24Sean Fennessey?

Okay, State and Maine, great pick. CR, you're up.

• 1:27:27Speaker 04

I will take Scream Three in action horror thriller, uh, the one set in Hollywood and one of the more delightful, kind of like, uh, I think incisive entries into this fantastic franchise, one of my favorite franchises. Um, you've got Patrick Dempsey playing a Hollywood cop. You've got Parker Posey doing her amazing, uh, lampooning of, uh, Scream Queens. Just an awesome movie. The whole like Lance Henriksen backstory and stuff, thirty seventies Hollywood, everything. So Scream Three is an easy pick for me here.

• 1:28:04Sean Fennessey?

  All right.

• 1:28:06Sean Fennessey?

  I'm missing.

• 1:28:08Sean Fennessey?

A few key categories and Oscar nominee is getting very thin. And so I'll take one of my favorite, very favorite movies from this year. A contender.

• 1:28:16Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:28:17Sean Fennessey?

Political thriller drama. Written and directed by Rod Lurie. Sort of a reaction to the Lewinsky scandal about a woman who is put up for vice president that has, or maybe doesn't have a salacious sexual basement snatch style history.

• 1:28:32Speaker 07

I was gonna say, if you didn't make the snatch comment.

• 1:28:35Speaker 06

• 1:28:37Sean Fennessey?

You know, incredibly memorable cast. Both Joan Allen and Jeff Bridges were nominated. Jeff Bridges, one of the all time great movie presidents. I think in many ways Barack Obama watched this movie and watched how Jeff Bridges acted in this movie and absorbed some of those tendencies.

• 1:28:51Speaker 07

  That's such a dig.

• 1:28:53Sean Fennessey?

So you're saying Obama got his swag from a white man. Look at you. No, I didn't say that. That's what you said. Those are the words that you put in my mouth. I said, the phrase I used was absorb some of his tendencies. So you could define that however you like.

• 1:29:09Sean Fennessey?

I love the sandwich part. Fucking shark steak. This is a very smart and entertaining bit of ridiculousness. And if you accept it in that way and not as like an adequate representation of our politics, I think it's a lot more fun. Also, Gary Oldman, who really did not like this movie because of the way that it was changed in in the editing process, who also produced it.

• 1:29:32Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 1:29:33Sean Fennessey?

Is actually quite good in cooking as an awful southern senator. Christian Slater is good in it. Very good.

• 1:29:39Speaker 07

It's funny that he was so like vocally unhappy about it, given how amazing his performance is.

• 1:29:44Sean Fennessey?

He's so good and obviously closely modeling on the like Strom Thurmond, Lindsey Graham style, southern, uh, right leaning senator. Okay, uh, Robbie, you're up.

• 1:29:54Speaker 08

You terrified me when you brought up Oscar nominee. There's really one Oscar nominee I want that's left on the board and that's Dancer in the Dark.

• 1:30:01Sean Fennessey?

  Hmm.

• 1:30:02Speaker 08

  Uh.

• 1:30:02Speaker 07

  Oh.

• 1:30:03Speaker 08

  Holy shit.

• 1:30:03Speaker 07

  Wow, okay.

• 1:30:04Speaker 08

Like, I don't know that there's another human being who could have starred in this movie.

• 1:30:08Sean Fennessey?

Some upbeat picks from you here.

• 1:30:09Speaker 07

Yeah, you're in a cheerful mood today.

• 1:30:11Speaker 08

But you know what? Half of this is a shiny musical.

• 1:30:13Sean Fennessey?

  Sure.

• 1:30:14Speaker 08

A real delightful time at the cinema. The rest of it, not so much.

• 1:30:17Sean Fennessey?

  Yep.

• 1:30:17Speaker 07

  Right.

• 1:30:18Speaker 08

Um, I, I kind of get why Bjork wasn't nominated for best actress for this movie because it's not very academy coded. But this is just one of the best performances of the year. Uh, unbelievable movie and.

• 1:30:29Speaker 08

I'm especially glad to have it because I think the rest of the Oscar nominees are pretty bleak. Unless you want The Emperor's New Groove, which I support any of you who do.

• 1:30:37Speaker 06

  Don't knock it.

• 1:30:38Speaker 08

It might be the worst looking Disney movie I've ever seen.

• 1:30:40Speaker 06

A lot of younger people, uh, vote on these drafts and they love.

• 1:30:45Speaker 08

So you're just, you're just working votes?

• 1:30:47Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:30:48Speaker 06

Oh, do you think that's what, do you think I'm pandering to the younger demographic with state and Maine, Rob?

• 1:30:54Speaker 08

I thought Billy, you're going straight for the ballet.

• 1:30:56Sean Fennessey?

I don't know if Emperor's New Groove is gonna get picked, but if anybody is interested in Disney history, the development and production of that movie is really interesting.

• 1:31:03Speaker 06

Oh, the way it was a completely different movie.

• 1:31:04Sean Fennessey?

Completely changed from being like an Aztec inspired kind of mega epic and turned into a goofy comedy. Anyhow, Mallory, you've got two picks.

• 1:31:12Speaker 07

Okay, um, I'm like afraid that there's like, that something's wrong with this movie and I don't know that. And that's why it's still here. So let me know.

• 1:31:22Speaker 06

Um, did you watch it in Lads Basement? That's my question.

• 1:31:25Speaker 07

  Ah.

• 1:31:27Speaker 05

  That's actually a good pod.

• 1:31:28Speaker 07

In a fashion, in a fashion, yeah.

• 1:31:31Speaker 05

  Lads Basement.

• 1:31:33Speaker 07

I mean, to be fair, that's most pods.

• 1:31:36Speaker 05

  Rate the movies by duration.

• 1:31:38Speaker 06

  That's most pods. Um, enthusiasm.

• 1:31:41Speaker 05

  Enthusiasm.

• 1:31:42Speaker 07

I, yep. I thought this was gonna go like really high first two rounds, so I, I, um.

• 1:31:48Speaker 06

This is a classic Mallory draft tactic.

• 1:31:50Speaker 07

Normally I'm like, oh, I thought it was gonna go, I'm so elated to have, have it and I am, but I'm also like.

• 1:31:54Speaker 06

  Concerned.

• 1:31:55Speaker 07

What am I missing here? How is this still here? I will be selecting with joy in my heart and also terror in my heart. I will be picking my, uh, my action horror thriller, uh, movie here. I'm picking Battle Royale.

• 1:32:07Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:32:08Speaker 07

Yeah. Why is that still here? What am I missing?

• 1:32:10Sean Fennessey?

  Nothing.

• 1:32:10Speaker 07

Okay, I thought this was gonna go in the first two rounds.

• 1:32:12Speaker 05

The reason why it's there is because I fucking forgot.

• 1:32:14Speaker 07

Okay, I, I, this movie's not only incredible and obviously deeply harrowing and stylistically inventive and memorable, haunting, it's so influential on the pop culture that came in its wake.

• 1:32:27Sean Fennessey?

It was squid game about this movie.

• 1:32:28Speaker 06

  This is a great draft.

• 1:32:29Speaker 07

Squid game, Hunger Games, like, we don't have a lot of these dystopian, uh, society has fallen.

• 1:32:36Speaker 05

  Fucking forgot about it.

• 1:32:37Sean Fennessey?

So this movie was actually, as far as I know, never theatrically released in the United States. Rob and I did talk about this and a handful of others. And so anytime a film does have a US distribution, we go with that date. If a movie doesn't come out in this country, we have to go with the year that it is released, which is 2000. It is.

• 1:32:53Amanda Dobbins?

Probably didn't really make its way over to the States.

• 1:32:55Sean Fennessey?

It was also banned in many countries.

• 1:32:56Speaker 07

I mean, I saw this way later, the 2000s.

• 1:32:59Sean Fennessey?

This was considered like a really kind of, a very rare case of 21st century, this is too depraved for the public, kind of outcry that you found a lot more in the 60s and 70s.

• 1:33:06Speaker 05

So, there was a point in my life where I was playing Marvel versus Capcom 2 competitively.

• 1:33:12Sean Fennessey?

  Incredible game, yeah.

• 1:33:13Amanda Dobbins?

  That's a show.

• 1:33:15Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:33:15Sean Fennessey?

You were, you were taking AP tests and we were playing back then.

• 1:33:18Speaker 07

  Okay, alright, okay.

• 1:33:19Amanda Dobbins?

No, no, no, I know, I know, we're on the clock.

• 1:33:21Speaker 07

So, when you say you're playing it competitively, can you just set the scene for me?

• 1:33:26Speaker 05

I was traveling around to different cities.

• 1:33:28Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, like the, yeah.

• 1:33:30Speaker 07

Okay, but so like where are the tournaments held?

• 1:33:32Speaker 05

There, there's Texas Showdown in Texas, there's.

• 1:33:35Speaker 07

No, no, no, but like in a.

• 1:33:36Speaker 05

  Houston.

• 1:33:36Speaker 07

  Hotel ballroom, like in.

• 1:33:38Speaker 05

In an arcade, it's at an arcade, it's an arcade game, so it's in an arcade.

• 1:33:41Speaker 07

  The Astrodome.

• 1:33:43Speaker 05

It's in arcades, go down to New Or- New Orleans, go to different places. I was watching, there's like all kinds of hierarchy in the video game world and all that. And after one of the tournaments, somebody put on this fucking movie because this movie is very.

• 1:33:58Sean Fennessey?

  Video game coded.

• 1:33:59Speaker 05

Video game tournament coded, I watched it, I was fucking blown away by Battle Royale.

• 1:34:05Sean Fennessey?

  Cool.

• 1:34:05Amanda Dobbins?

Was this before or after you were a professional pool player?

• 1:34:08Speaker 05

  Wasn't professional.

• 1:34:09Speaker 07

  Well.

• 1:34:09Speaker 05

Okay, but it actually leads right into that. It's like, it goes, the, the obsessions, they keep going, it's right after pool, Marvel versus Capcom 2, playing competitively.

• 1:34:19Sean Fennessey?

You really are, are Forrest Gump in so many ways. Uh, Mal, you have another.

• 1:34:22Speaker 05

  ADHD.

• 1:34:24Speaker 07

Okay. I, I'm making a decision to kind of punt on Blockbuster, which I assume I will deeply regret later, but I just, I'm going, there's a movie here that I'm excited to, to get to take, um, so I'm taking my drama now.

• 1:34:38Sean Fennessey?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:34:38Speaker 07

I know you love this movie, I feel sure a lot of us love this movie. Here's some things I love, spending time with you guys. Um, love stories?

• 1:34:47Speaker 08

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:34:48Speaker 07

  Sports stories?

• 1:34:49Speaker 05

  Oh shit.

• 1:34:50Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, the passage of time, I'm taking Love and Basketball.

• 1:34:53Speaker 05

  Oh.

• 1:34:54Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:34:54Speaker 05

I knew that you white motherfuckers weren't gonna take that movie. I was so sure.

• 1:35:00Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, no way.

• 1:35:01Speaker 05

If I would've thought that there was any chance, you won the fucking draft. If I would've thought that there's any chance that that movie would be drafted. Now, you're a fucking crazy draft. Yeah, like, if I would've thought there was any chance.

• 1:35:15Amanda Dobbins?

This is a really good draft. This is a really good draft.

• 1:35:16Speaker 05

I would've took Love and Basketball.

• 1:35:17Speaker 07

I'm sorry, I feel bad. This is like the thing I, I had two things that I was like, could I, three things, could I possibly do it to another person? Almost Famous with You, Bring It On With You.

• 1:35:27Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:35:27Speaker 07

And Love and Basketball with Sean.

• 1:35:29Speaker 05

  I cannot believe this.

• 1:35:30Speaker 07

You, I think we can survive.

• 1:35:31Amanda Dobbins?

  It's an incredible movie.

• 1:35:32Speaker 08

This was, this was going off the board next if you didn't pick it.

• 1:35:34Speaker 07

  I know.

• 1:35:35Amanda Dobbins?

It's, uh, it's a little disrespectful that it's the fifth round.

• 1:35:38Speaker 05

Now, my draft is gonna get really weird, I can't wait.

• 1:35:43Speaker 08

  That's a, that's a tough beat for me.

• 1:35:44Speaker 07

I'm sorry, buddy. Great movie, great fucking movie.

• 1:35:47Speaker 08

Gina Prince, by the woods, amazing film. Um, okay, Rob?

• 1:35:51Speaker 08

I'm gonna go with a drama. I'm gonna take the Taiwanese masterpiece, Yi Yi. Also next to my list.

• 1:36:01Speaker 07

Damn, this is a fast age, I'm loving this.

• 1:36:04Speaker 04

It's like he, he's like a scanner. He's just like reading your mind and blowing your brain up.

• 1:36:09Speaker 08

Well, that's two in a row that were like, right, that were, anyway. Well, if you know how to talk about this movie on a podcast, I encourage it because if I talk about what this movie's about, it seems very small. If I try to tell you how it makes you feel, I'm gonna sound like I'm trying to convert you to a cult, and I fucking am mostly, I want everyone to watch this movie. It is, like, I, I just think it captures the enormity of everyday life in a way that basically nothing else does. And the idea of like, what if we made a movie that, that made regular life feel like the most important thing in the world? Shouldn't be as revolutionary as it is, but then you watch this and you're like, holy shit, this is revolutionary.

• 1:36:44Sean Fennessey?

It's a wonderful pick. Great pick. Um, okay. I need drama, thriller, action, horror, and wild card. So in drama, I will take my friend James Gray's The Yards, starring Mark Wahlberg, Joaquin Phoenix, Charlize Theron, Faye Dunaway, Ellen Burstyn, and James Caan. What a cast. This is a very clear homage to a certain kind of gritty, hard-bitten 70s crime thriller that is basically the defining notion of my personality. Okay. And. Extremely normal thing to say. This film co-written with Matt Reeves. Gray's friend. Yeah, I've heard of him. And now the arbiter of the Batman. One of the Batman. One of the Batman for now. The Batman.

• 1:37:29Sean Fennessey?

We'll see what happens. This is one of the great Wahlberg performances, really focused and engaged Wahlberg, not manic, I'm half-trying Wahlberg. And Joaquin is outrageously good as Willie Gutierrez. This is a beautiful film. The way that it's shot is absolutely amazing. Harris's ABBI cinematography. And got stuck in the Harvey Weinstein zone and was a big bomb and was a $25 million movie that made less than a million dollars. But if you've never seen this movie, highly encourage you to check it out. It's excellent.

• 1:38:00Speaker 08

Can I ask you a procedural question about it? The movie goes to shit when Joaquin is like at the yard and trying to bribe the security guy or whatever with Knicks tickets.

• 1:38:09Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:38:10Speaker 08

To presumably like 2019 Knicks tickets. Security guard's like, no, that's not good enough. There's a 2025 Knicks ticket for the playoffs.

• 1:38:18Sean Fennessey?

  Oh, my God.

• 1:38:18Speaker 08

  Avoid the whole movie.

• 1:38:19Sean Fennessey?

Wow. The tough thing about that moment in the movie is that obviously they had just gone to the NBA finals. Yeah, they went to the finals. So like, it actually isn't plausible. Yeah. But when James was writing the movie, you had to be like, we were kind of low in 1997.

• 1:38:36Speaker 08

  Yeah.

• 1:38:36Sean Fennessey?

We were not the same team that we were in 1994.

• 1:38:38Speaker 04

That's why it's really hard to make sports references and then you haven't stick throughout the times.

• 1:38:42Sean Fennessey?

It really is. In 2025, yeah. I mean, you could, I think you could like buy Tesla for two front court side Knicks tickets at this point, right? No? Okay.

• 1:38:51Speaker 07

A Tesla or all of them?

• 1:38:52Sean Fennessey?

  The whole company, I think.

• 1:38:54Speaker 04

In comedy, I am going to pick a movie that I think we usually almost get an award sometimes. I've accidentally seen this 20 times, The Replacements. Keanu Reeves, sports comedy with Gene Hackman.

• 1:39:08Speaker 04

Chris Ithens is incredible in this movie.

• 1:39:10Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 1:39:10Speaker 05

This is a fuck yeah dude.

• 1:39:11Speaker 07

  Some great underwear action.

• 1:39:12Speaker 04

  This is, this is absolutely.

• 1:39:14Sean Fennessey?

Because you can't have love in basketball, you flip to fuck yeah dude.

• 1:39:17Speaker 05

  I'm fucking pissed.

• 1:39:21Speaker 04

But this is the, I'm sure one day I was walking down the street and it was too hot and I was like, you know, I'm just gonna go to the movies. What's playing? And I was, I saw The Replacements that day.

• 1:39:29Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 1:39:30Speaker 04

And then I have seen it like in, in some part, like countless other times on cable television. And it's a really, really solid sports comedy.

• 1:39:38Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 1:39:39Sean Fennessey?

  Okay, Joanna, you're up.

• 1:39:41Speaker 06

Um, I'll just keep it brief and I'll say, uh, I'm picking a movie that I don't think is great, but I think was indelible of the year, which is The Cell. An action thriller.

• 1:39:49Sean Fennessey?

  No. Hell yeah.

• 1:39:51Speaker 04

No, I should have known because you're a fall head.

• 1:39:52Speaker 06

  Yeah, the fall head, yeah.

• 1:39:54Sean Fennessey?

  Tarson.

• 1:39:54Speaker 06

Tarson Singh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:39:55Speaker 05

  I don't understand it.

• 1:39:56Sean Fennessey?

  No.

• 1:39:57Speaker 06

You don't have to understand it. You just have to let the, like, the visuals take.

• 1:40:01Speaker 05

This was my all time J Lo time, man.

• 1:40:04Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 1:40:04Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:40:04Speaker 05

  Everything.

• 1:40:06Sean Fennessey?

I would say her performance leaves a little something to be desired of.

• 1:40:09Speaker 06

But Denofrio makes up for it.

• 1:40:11Sean Fennessey?

  He does.

• 1:40:11Speaker 06

  Without, yeah.

• 1:40:12Speaker 05

This was a J Lo time.

• 1:40:14Amanda Dobbins?

She was very powerful in this, yeah.

• 1:40:16Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:40:17Sean Fennessey?

Uh, really good pick and you just kind of fucked up what I thought my board was gonna be. So well done by you. Um, Van, you're up.

• 1:40:25Speaker 05

I'm gonna take, now I'm just drafting from the heart, The Patriot.

• 1:40:30Sean Fennessey?

  Jesus Christ.

• 1:40:31Speaker 04

  No Gibson?

• 1:40:35Speaker 07

  In what category?

• 1:40:36Speaker 05

  I'm taking.

• 1:40:38Speaker 06

  Problematic faves.

• 1:40:38Speaker 05

  No, problematic.

• 1:40:39Speaker 07

I mean, you took, you took American Beauty last draft.

• 1:40:43Speaker 05

I love American Beauty. I don't understand you.

• 1:40:46Speaker 06

  Yeah, Spacey and Gibson.

• 1:40:47Speaker 05

The Patriot. I fucking love this movie. Wait, is it, is this, is it?

• 1:40:51Amanda Dobbins?

  So it's Revolutionary War, right?

• 1:40:53Speaker 05

No, action, action. I'm taking it in action.

• 1:40:55Sean Fennessey?

  In action. Yeah, that's.

• 1:40:56Speaker 05

  Yeah, in action.

• 1:40:57Speaker 06

It's a great Jason Isaacs performance.

• 1:40:58Sean Fennessey?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:40:58Speaker 05

Great Jason Isaacs performance. I actually once talked to Jason Isaacs at the gym about it.

• 1:41:03Amanda Dobbins?

So I know we're on a clock, but like, is that what you lead with when you see Jason Isaacs at the gym?

• 1:41:10Speaker 05

Yeah, he was like very nonplussed that I did that.

• 1:41:12Amanda Dobbins?

But in the future, it would be Tim Ratliff?

• 1:41:14Speaker 05

But yeah, but he, Tim Ratliff.

• 1:41:16Sean Fennessey?

We have fifteen picks to make. In twenty-five minutes.

• 1:41:19Amanda Dobbins?

He was talking to Jason Isaacs at the gym about the Patriot.

• 1:41:23Sean Fennessey?

That's journalism. You gotta ask one follower. Amanda, you have two picks.

• 1:41:26Amanda Dobbins?

I do, and I'm doing exactly what I want. In action horror thriller, I will be taking the 2000 classic and Cameron Diaz's best recorded performance, Charlie's Angels. I love this movie. The most Amanda board I've ever seen. This is the funniest she's ever been, when she like hears the Birdcut song and she's like, they're in Carmel. It was very important to me.

• 1:41:48Speaker 04

If you let you make seven picks in a row, would you basically have this roster?

• 1:41:52Amanda Dobbins?

I told you, no, because there are a couple, no, I wanted American Psycho in this and I wanted Charlie's Angels and Blockbuster, but it's okay because I have a, I have an amazing backup, Blockbuster, which is of course, one of Sandra Bullock's greatest recorded performances, Miss Congeniality. Speaking of TNT before baseball games, what were you guys like, I don't know what you were doing in 2000, I was at the cinema watching people be funny and also be undercover for the FBI. Candace Bergen, thank you for your service.

• 1:42:21Sean Fennessey?

Okay, excellent picks. Van, you have another pick.

• 1:42:26Amanda Dobbins?

  Just remarkable stuff.

• 1:42:27Speaker 05

  Boiler Room.

• 1:42:28Amanda Dobbins?

  Fuck off, man!

• 1:42:29Sean Fennessey?

  Come on, dude!

• 1:42:32Amanda Dobbins?

  Great one. God damn it!

• 1:42:36Sean Fennessey?

  What category in drama?

• 1:42:38Speaker 05

Oh, yeah, drama, I'll take Boiler Room. Fucking A, over the top.

• 1:42:43Amanda Dobbins?

  I'm liquid!

• 1:42:45Speaker 05

I'm liquid. Ben Affleck rivaling, rivaling Alec Baldwin's one scene heater in Glengarry Glen Ross.

• 1:42:54Sean Fennessey?

Let's, let's, let's take the temperature down just a little bit.

• 1:42:57Speaker 05

I'm just saying, comes in, fucks, leaves, into the basement, out.

• 1:43:03Sean Fennessey?

Yep. Uh, I like this movie against my own better judgment. So, uh, all right, Joanna.

• 1:43:11Speaker 06

All, for drama, I'll take Ghost Dog.

• 1:43:14Speaker 05

  Oh, shit!

• 1:43:16Sean Fennessey?

  God damn.

• 1:43:17Speaker 04

I was really banking on that one.

• 1:43:18Speaker 05

  Oh, lordy!

• 1:43:19Speaker 04

I didn't know that it came out in 2000.

• 1:43:20Speaker 05

Way of the Samurai, good man purse.

• 1:43:23Speaker 04

  March 3rd, fuck my life.

• 1:43:28Sean Fennessey?

  Very, very good pick.

• 1:43:29Speaker 04

  Now, that's a vibe pick.

• 1:43:29Sean Fennessey?

You just got, you just got double shank.

• 1:43:32Speaker 04

I feel like I'm an odds.

• 1:43:35Sean Fennessey?

Chris, you're also missing a drama and a wild card.

• 1:43:37Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:43:37Sean Fennessey?

  What are you going with?

• 1:43:38Speaker 04

Uh, I'm gonna take, uh, in drama, Christopher McCory's The Way of the Gun.

• 1:43:45Amanda Dobbins?

  Sure.

• 1:43:46Speaker 05

  Oh, shit.

• 1:43:47Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:43:47Speaker 06

  Sounds great, sounds great.

• 1:43:50Speaker 05

  I forgot about that movie.

• 1:43:51Speaker 04

There's, it's actually a very talky drama film. Like, and there's some comedy and then there's a lot of violence at the end, but if you thought his Reacher film was a grimy B movie. Yeah. Watch, watch Ryan Phillippe kill dudes. Have y'all considered Garbage Elmore Leonard? I feel like Way of the Gun is.

• 1:44:08Sean Fennessey?

  Really good.

• 1:44:09Amanda Dobbins?

  Really good.

• 1:44:09Sean Fennessey?

  Really good.

• 1:44:10Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:44:11Sean Fennessey?

That is something that we have completely lost to television these days, too. You just don't have movies that are like that.

• 1:44:15Amanda Dobbins?

You do really like Ryan Phillippe.

• 1:44:17Speaker 04

  No, I, well.

• 1:44:18Amanda Dobbins?

  Uh, you know.

• 1:44:22Amanda Dobbins?

When you really think it through.

• 1:44:23Speaker 04

When he, he's a big Birds fan, I think.

• 1:44:25Amanda Dobbins?

  Uh, that's, that seems right.

• 1:44:27Speaker 04

And, uh, he was good in, um, Full Intentions.

• 1:44:31Amanda Dobbins?

Great. What was Miles Turner when he courtside the next?

• 1:44:34Speaker 05

  Give me two.

• 1:44:35Amanda Dobbins?

Are you gonna revoke his card?

• 1:44:36Speaker 04

No, I'm not getting into that.

• 1:44:37Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:44:37Speaker 04

  He's a real doc.

• 1:44:38Amanda Dobbins?

How many picks do you have left?

• 1:44:39Speaker 04

I didn't give you any, any grief about that. I didn't give you any grief about anything. I've been sending you like really thoughtful texts. Talk to me about the postseason.

• 1:44:49Speaker 06

Do you want to tell us more about Jason Isner's in the gym?

• 1:44:51Speaker 05

I do want to tell my story, but I'm gonna save it for midnight, boys.

• 1:44:54Sean Fennessey?

I'm taking, I'm taking a pick. I need to take an action horror thriller. I'm running out of credible titles, but there is one credible title that I quite enjoy left. It's called Pitch Black.

• 1:45:04Speaker 06

  I love Pitch Black.

• 1:45:05Sean Fennessey?

This is a banger of a movie.

• 1:45:07Speaker 06

  I love this movie.

• 1:45:07Sean Fennessey?

I am a known Vin Diesel hater, except in the instance of this movie and Boiler Room. So a little.

• 1:45:13Speaker 05

You can make an argument for him and the original Fast and the Furious 2. This was what he was.

• 1:45:18Sean Fennessey?

  I wouldn't make that argument.

• 1:45:19Speaker 06

  What about Private Ryan?

• 1:45:21Sean Fennessey?

  He's solid in Private Ryan.

• 1:45:22Speaker 05

Pitch Black and Boiler Room and this, he is on his fucking wavelength.

• 1:45:25Sean Fennessey?

Pitch Black, very cool, kind of mid-budget sci-fi movie about a guy who's being transported, um. To a prison that crash lands on like a dark planet and all the creatures that move in the dark.

• 1:45:37Speaker 04

  Starring the great Roda Mitchell.

• 1:45:39Sean Fennessey?

  Roda Mitchell.

• 1:45:39Speaker 06

  Great Roda Mitchell.

• 1:45:40Sean Fennessey?

  Cole Hauser.

• 1:45:41Speaker 06

Great information about menstruation for people watching this movie. Keith David in this movie.

• 1:45:45Speaker 05

It's funny. So last night I was watching A Quiet Place and I realized that A Quiet Place is a shadow reboot.

• 1:45:51Speaker 06

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:45:51Speaker 05

  It's pitch black with sound.

• 1:45:53Sean Fennessey?

It's kinda inverts it. Yeah, it's a good call.

• 1:45:55Speaker 06

  Creatures don't look wholly dissimilar.

• 1:45:57Speaker 05

  Is that?

• 1:45:58Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:45:58Sean Fennessey?

  Very good point.

• 1:45:59Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:45:59Sean Fennessey?

Um, okay. Next pick is Rob.

• 1:46:03Speaker 08

I'm gonna go straight to wildcard and.

• 1:46:06Sean Fennessey?

  Straight to wildcard?

• 1:46:08Speaker 08

Well, I mean, I only have two picks left.

• 1:46:09Speaker 06

  What's the other category?

• 1:46:10Speaker 08

Originals, my last category. And I'm kinda like in a range of originals where it's like, there's a couple of things I'm okay with. There's one wildcard I would really like.

• 1:46:17Speaker 04

Broke a sweat in this draft, man.

• 1:46:18Speaker 06

  I'm scared.

• 1:46:19Speaker 08

Uh, some rounds I am Malcolm Washington in the Criterion Closet and I want to talk about the ways that our great artists are in conversation with each other. And some rounds I am John David Washington in the Criterion Closet, going straight for that Jackie Chan box set. And I'm gonna take Drunken Master 2, AKA The Legend of the Drunken Master, as it was released in the US in the year 2000. Don't at me. Uh, maybe the best Kung Fu movie ever made.

• 1:46:42Sean Fennessey?

So, uh, wonderful pick, but you did not go Shanghai Moon here, just so I'm.

• 1:46:46Speaker 06

  I know.

• 1:46:47Speaker 08

I'm gonna skip past that. It's in the box set, but I'm probably not gonna watch it.

• 1:46:52Sean Fennessey?

Understood. Drunken Master 2 is sick. Uh, all right, Mallory, you've got two picks to close out your draft. You were presently missing.

• 1:47:00Speaker 06

  Wildcard and Blockbuster.

• 1:47:01Sean Fennessey?

  Blockbuster and a wildcard.

• 1:47:02Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:47:03Sean Fennessey?

And then we will have six consecutive wildcards.

• 1:47:05Amanda Dobbins?

Angels and there's congeniality away from you on Blockbuster, so.

• 1:47:08Speaker 06

  You did. Blockbuster is thin.

• 1:47:10Amanda Dobbins?

There's, there's, there's one on the board that I could see working for you. That was on my list.

• 1:47:15Speaker 06

There are actually two on the board.

• 1:47:16Amanda Dobbins?

  And it's underrated.

• 1:47:17Sean Fennessey?

Undrafted Blockbusters, let's just say it, since you're about to pick. How the Grinch Stole Christmas, the number one movie of the year at 261 million, beloved Jim Carrey classic.

• 1:47:26Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:47:26Sean Fennessey?

  Directed by Ron Howard.

• 1:47:27Speaker 06

  Hmm.

• 1:47:28Sean Fennessey?

Mission Impossible 2, widely considered the worst of the Mission Impossible movies, at least on this podcast. What Women Want.

• 1:47:35Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:47:35Sean Fennessey?

  Has gone undrafted thus far.

• 1:47:37Speaker 06

  Yep.

• 1:47:38Sean Fennessey?

Nancy Meyers, semi-classic and a huge hit, the fifth highest grossing movie of the year.

• 1:47:42Speaker 06

For Van who loves Mel Gibson.

• 1:47:43Sean Fennessey?

  Yes.

• 1:47:44Speaker 06

  Right.

• 1:47:44Sean Fennessey?

Then we go all the way down to what, no, scary movie.

• 1:47:47Speaker 06

  Uh-huh.

• 1:47:48Sean Fennessey?

What Lies Beneath, Dinosaur, where my dinosaur head's at, Disney fans, not, not a one of them here. And then of course Nutty Professor 2, The Clumps, I saw it in theaters and laughed. Big Mama's House, Chicken Run, and Gone in 60 Seconds. So where are you going, Mel?

• 1:48:03Speaker 07

I'll be taking my wild card. What? I'll be taking my wild card. I have two picks in a row and just as a matter of principle, based on the quality of the movies Sean just read, I need that to be my last pick. Chicken Run is good, by the way. Um, true, true. My wild card is a movie that I would say shook the Franklin middle and Franklin high community.

• 1:48:27Speaker 04

Are you sure it was this movie that did that?

• 1:48:29Speaker 07

Some other things as well. Not Last Basements? I am taking Requiem for a Dream as my wild card. This was like a seminal thing to watch when you were a young person.

• 1:48:39Sean Fennessey?

Yeah. Did you recreate any of the sequences from the film in the basement?

• 1:48:43Speaker 07

In Last Basements? Um, no comment. Even I have a lime. Even I have a lime. Um, so that's my wild card. I love that movie and saw it a lot when I was younger. What? What?

• 1:48:56Speaker 04

  What?

• 1:48:57Speaker 07

  What?

• 1:48:57Speaker 04

What the fuck did you say a lot?

• 1:48:59Speaker 07

My favorite thing to do when I was like late in high school and early college was watching fucked up disturbing movies. I have absolutely no idea. The wild card one, so, okay, that's my, that's my wild card. My blockbuster, which is my final pick, I'm only actually considering two things here. I'm considering, because of my deep and abiding love for Harrison Ford, What Lies Beneath. Yeah, sure. And I am considering Mission Impossible 2, because while that is, I agree, easily the worst Mission Impossible movie.

• 1:49:24Sean Fennessey?

  Maybe the most Mallory Coated.

• 1:49:25Speaker 07

Also the one I have seen without question the most.

• 1:49:29Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:49:30Speaker 07

I watch it all the time. It is immensely entertaining, albeit quite poor, and Anthony Hopkins saying,

• 1:49:38Speaker 07

"What? Take a man to bed and lie to him? She's a woman! She has all the training she needs!" It's just very memorable to me.

• 1:49:47Speaker 04

I honestly, I don't think I've ever seen him say that.

• 1:49:50Speaker 07

Says it in the film. I was showing someone Fallout the other day and they were like, "Oh, Tom Cruise can't climb that cliff." I was like, " Canonically, he can climb cliffs." He can climb that cliff. Canonically. Oh, boy, this is tough. Do I, I kinda wanna take Mission Impossible 2. Should I take What Lies Beneath?

• 1:50:07Speaker 04

  Do MI2.

• 1:50:07Speaker 07

I do love Harrison Ford so much, but I don't like horror movies, honestly. I don't.

• 1:50:11Speaker 04

It's not really a horror movie. It's more of a Hitchcockian thriller. Yeah, domestic drama. I think you should take MI2 since you've seen it a lot and can remember Anthony Hopkins' lines.

• 1:50:19Speaker 07

I'm gonna take Mission Impossible 2. I'm gonna do it. That's my blockbuster. Let's fucking go.

• 1:50:23Sean Fennessey?

Great representation for John Woo. I appreciate it. Rob, you've got another pick. You've gotta take

• 1:50:29Speaker 08

  An original.

• 1:50:30Sean Fennessey?

  An original film.

• 1:50:31Speaker 08

I'm gonna take But I'm a Cheerleader, an original.

• 1:50:34Speaker 05

  Damn, that was 2000?

• 1:50:35Speaker 08

  2000.

• 1:50:36Sean Fennessey?

  It is.

• 1:50:36Speaker 05

  That's like the August 2000s.

• 1:50:38Speaker 07

Do you have any of your wildcard?

• 1:50:40Speaker 05

I thought that was a little bit earlier than that.

• 1:50:41Speaker 04

Did he just get you again?

• 1:50:42Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:50:43Speaker 07

  Wow.

• 1:50:43Speaker 08

Um, you know, some movies there to ask, isn't conversion therapy kinda gay?

• 1:50:48Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:50:48Speaker 08

And they really follow through on that. It is very weird seeing Natasha Lyonne play Basic. Like, normal, everyday, high school girl. Very, very startling, but funny, sweet. I love the, like, dollhousey, zine aesthetic of that movie, but I'm a cheerleader.

• 1:51:04Sean Fennessey?

  Uh, great pick.

• 1:51:09Sean Fennessey?

I've got a pick. I wouldn't say this has been my best draft, so I'm just gotta, gotta be really, really true to who I was at this time. And in Wildcard, I'll be selecting the 2000 documentary Backstage, chronicling the 1999 Hard Knock Life Tour, featuring

• 1:51:24Speaker 04

  Punch it in, come on.

• 1:51:25Sean Fennessey?

Jay-Z and Method Man and Redman.

• 1:51:27Speaker 05

I didn't know we could do documentaries. I didn't know that.

• 1:51:30Sean Fennessey?

  Um, of course you can.

• 1:51:31Speaker 07

  In Wildcard, yeah.

• 1:51:31Sean Fennessey?

  In Wildcard, they're available.

• 1:51:32Speaker 07

  Or an Oscar nominee.

• 1:51:33Sean Fennessey?

One could say this is a great drama.

• 1:51:35Speaker 05

  I tell you, it is.

• 1:51:37Sean Fennessey?

  Backstage.

• 1:51:38Speaker 05

Remember the, uh, the Dame, Kevin Lyles scene?

• 1:51:40Speaker 04

Dame and Kevin Lyles scene is incredible. It's like Glenn Gary.

• 1:51:43Sean Fennessey?

Very well. Um, this was the number one thing I was interested in when this came out. And, uh, this being like right post-volume three?

• 1:51:55Speaker 05

Yeah. If we got jackets, would they be Ringer jackets or Spotify jackets?

• 1:51:58Sean Fennessey?

Uh, they would be Rockefeller chains, obviously.

• 1:52:02Speaker 04

This is after Meth and Red blackout record, right?

• 1:52:04Sean Fennessey?

It is, yeah. Yeah. This was a very good time in American music. Beanie Siegel on this tour, you know?

• 1:52:09Speaker 05

  If you guys don't know.

• 1:52:10Sean Fennessey?

Ja Rule and Ja Rule was okay.

• 1:52:11Speaker 05

Ja Rule, yeah. Dame Dash was pissed off because they got Def Jam jackets and they were supposed to get, he wanted them to get Rockefeller jackets.

• 1:52:20Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:52:20Speaker 05

  It's a crazy scene.

• 1:52:21Sean Fennessey?

  Uh, okay. Who's next?

• 1:52:24Speaker 07

  CR.

• 1:52:24Speaker 04

  Is that me?

• 1:52:25Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 1:52:25Speaker 04

Last one. If you're just going Jedi, just blast shield down. I'm picking Road Trip.

• 1:52:32Speaker 07

  Okay.

• 1:52:36Speaker 04

Todd Phillips. Fucking going pro, Breckin Meyer. I want to give him that, please.

• 1:52:43Sean Fennessey?

  What about Tom Green?

• 1:52:44Speaker 04

Tom Green was in this. Flash shield down.

• 1:52:45Sean Fennessey?

Were you not a Tom Green guy?

• 1:52:46Speaker 04

I wasn't a huge Tom Green guy, but.

• 1:52:48Sean Fennessey?

Who watched the Tom Green documentary?

• 1:52:51Speaker 04

  Freddie got fingered?

• 1:52:51Sean Fennessey?

No. He and Drew Barrymore. Yeah, they got married.

• 1:52:56Speaker 04

  That was powerful.

• 1:52:56Amanda Dobbins?

  I didn't even say Drew Barrymore's name when I.

• 1:52:59Speaker 04

  Can I just say?

• 1:53:00Sean Fennessey?

  It didn't.

• 1:53:00Speaker 04

  You watch Road Trip.

• 1:53:01Sean Fennessey?

  She is.

• 1:53:02Speaker 04

And you can tell Todd Phillips like has something.

• 1:53:04Speaker 05

  Right.

• 1:53:05Speaker 04

It's like, it's like, it's like that little bit better than what that movie could have been.

• 1:53:09Speaker 08

I'm not even joking, it's his best movie.

• 1:53:12Speaker 04

  I think.

• 1:53:12Speaker 08

Says more about Todd Phillips than Road Trip.

• 1:53:14Sean Fennessey?

Old school is funnier, in my opinion.

• 1:53:15Speaker 08

  I'll take Road Trip.

• 1:53:16Sean Fennessey?

Uh, Road Trip, uh, came out in 2000 when I enrolled at Ithaca College. This film takes place at Ithaca and everyone was very intent on recreating as much of this movie as they possibly could.

• 1:53:28Speaker 04

Also, Amy Smart is like my Diane Keaton kind of at this era, you know? Yeah. She's just like what she, what she, her run that she was on here. Outside Providence. Culminating with Crank.

• 1:53:38Sean Fennessey?

  Oh, Crank.

• 1:53:39Speaker 04

  Rat Race. Outside Providence.

• 1:53:41Speaker 05

  That Crank scene is crazy.

• 1:53:42Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:53:43Speaker 05

  That's basement.

• 1:53:43Speaker 08

When we're doing the Crank draft.

• 1:53:44Speaker 04

That is, that is basement quality. That's Lads in Basements.

• 1:53:48Sean Fennessey?

Okay, Joanna, now that you've been stymied multiple times with your final pick you are taking.

• 1:53:53Speaker 06

I'm gonna take a film that I did, I like specifically did not see in 2000 because, uh, it caused a divorce between one of my favorite actors. And, uh, his chair's director, um.

• 1:54:05Speaker 05

Can't believe you didn't take this.

• 1:54:06Speaker 06

  And it's The Beach.

• 1:54:07Speaker 05

  Wrong.

• 1:54:09Speaker 06

Which I think has aged incredibly well. Like I, I watched it last year and I actually think, you know, it was considered a big flop for Leo. Uh, you know, a huge rift for Ewan, Ewan McGregor and Danny Boyle. Um, uh, but a great Alex Garland story and Tilda Swinton is fantastic in it and I think it actually really, really.

• 1:54:29Speaker 04

They don't come back together until Trainspotting.

• 1:54:32Speaker 06

Like T two. Judgment Day. On McGregor.

• 1:54:34Sean Fennessey?

Yeah. But this kicks off Garland and Boyle.

• 1:54:37Speaker 06

  Mm hmm. Yeah.

• 1:54:38Sean Fennessey?

This is also a case, in my opinion, of book is better than the movie.

• 1:54:41Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:54:41Sean Fennessey?

  I think the

• 1:54:42Speaker 06

  Absolutely.

• 1:54:42Sean Fennessey?

  Novel of this baseline.

• 1:54:43Speaker 05

I think the beach confused people.

• 1:54:45Sean Fennessey?

  It, yeah. It's bat shit.

• 1:54:47Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:54:47Sean Fennessey?

  It's a crazy.

• 1:54:48Speaker 05

  Yeah, I think.

• 1:54:48Sean Fennessey?

  In a good way.

• 1:54:49Speaker 05

For him. And where he was at his career, I think a lot of people went to the beach thinking it was going to be a different movie.

• 1:54:56Speaker 06

  Oh, a hundred percent.

• 1:54:57Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:54:57Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:54:58Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, I agree. Um, it's a movie that I always loved in theory and never loved as much watching it, but.

• 1:55:02Speaker 06

Uh, yeah, watching it last year, I was like, this is, yeah, really worked for me.

• 1:55:06Sean Fennessey?

Okay, Van, you have got a wild card pick ahead of you.

• 1:55:15Sean Fennessey?

Can choose any film released in the year two thousand in the United States.

• 1:55:18Speaker 05

  Final Destination.

• 1:55:20Speaker 06

I can't believe it went this long.

• 1:55:22Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:55:22Speaker 06

  I almost picked it.

• 1:55:23Speaker 05

  Final Destination.

• 1:55:24Sean Fennessey?

The thing is, it's FD two. As Chris and I chronicled on this podcast.

• 1:55:28Speaker 05

  Right.

• 1:55:29Sean Fennessey?

  FD is phenomenal.

• 1:55:30Speaker 05

  Right.

• 1:55:30Sean Fennessey?

  I'm not

• 1:55:31Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:55:31Sean Fennessey?

  negging your pick.

• 1:55:32Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:55:33Sean Fennessey?

And then FD, FD has the best. You're definitely negging.

• 1:55:35Speaker 05

  You're definitely negging, but, but.

• 1:55:37Speaker 06

The original Final Destination is the one, Final Destination is the one with the airplane.

• 1:55:41Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:55:41Speaker 06

But not the logs in the truck?

• 1:55:42Sean Fennessey?

  No.

• 1:55:42Speaker 05

  No, that's FD two.

• 1:55:43Sean Fennessey?

  That's true.

• 1:55:44Speaker 06

  I support you, Van.

• 1:55:45Speaker 05

So this, this is my deal. So this is my deal. When I watched Final Destination, I realized that I would never see another Final Destination movie ever.

• 1:55:55Sean Fennessey?

  Oh, shit.

• 1:55:55Speaker 05

Ever, ever, ever, ever. I cannot watch a movie where death is the villain. It's just, it's too, it fucks with me too much. Okay? I can't do it. I was in the theater freaked out. The only other movie I thought about taking here was Proof of Life.

• 1:56:10Speaker 06

  Another one.

• 1:56:11Sean Fennessey?

I've said everything I have to say about that film. It's a masterpiece. Yeah, I just, I wanted to throw, give flowers to some other filmmakers in this. Can you name the director of Final Destination?

• 1:56:23Sean Fennessey?

Is it like Jim Levitt? No, James Wong? No. Oh, who was it? I think it is James Wong. Yeah, James Wong.

• 1:56:29Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:56:30Sean Fennessey?

Cause he does one. Three? Three. Who did two? John Ford? Yep.

• 1:56:37Speaker 06

Wow. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:56:39Speaker 08

I think that Bruce is the best one.

• 1:56:41Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:56:41Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:56:42Sean Fennessey?

Okay, Amanda, you've got one more pick. This draft has one more pick.

• 1:56:49Speaker 05

  Aw shit.

• 1:56:53Sean Fennessey?

Just, just so you know, you have to materially comment.

• 1:56:56Amanda Dobbins?

Ah, yes, okay, so this is. The LeAnn Rimes version of the song from the hit film. Wow. Coyote. Coyote ugly, baby.

• 1:57:07Speaker 07

This is astonishing stuff for me.

• 1:57:09Amanda Dobbins?

What else was I gonna do? Absolutely.

• 1:57:11Speaker 07

  Are you kidding?

• 1:57:15Amanda Dobbins?

  I don't know.

• 1:57:15Speaker 05

  Just like.

• 1:57:16Amanda Dobbins?

What is going on there? Art is being made in Coyote Ugly too, okay? She's a songwriter.

• 1:57:22Speaker 05

  Terrible movie.

• 1:57:23Amanda Dobbins?

One of the worst movies I've ever seen.

• 1:57:26Amanda Dobbins?

Pollack is still here. Still here. That's disrespectful to Maria Bello. No, Maria Bello innocent. Who is hosing people down, you know?

• 1:57:35Sean Fennessey?

Did you ever go to Coyote Ugly?

• 1:57:37Amanda Dobbins?

I did, uh, like in the middle of the afternoon. Uh, and had some wings. Yeah, no, I was not working there. I did not get up on the bar, but there was. Um, I think that you all forgot what it was like to be 16 and going to the movies and I did not. And I saw this in theaters and I had this on many running playlists for many years. Can't Find the Moonlight. LeAnn Rimes can sing.

• 1:58:02Speaker 05

  Yes, yes.

• 1:58:03Amanda Dobbins?

  Boy, can Piper Perabo sing?

• 1:58:04Sean Fennessey?

So know, know what women want for you.

• 1:58:06Amanda Dobbins?

No. Ultimately, no. I, I went with my heart. It was funny.

• 1:58:11Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah. What women don't want.

• 1:58:13Amanda Dobbins?

What women don't want is, uh, when we rewatched it for the Nancy Meyers Hall of Fame, I think you and I were both charmed by it.

• 1:58:20Sean Fennessey?

  I enjoyed it.

• 1:58:21Amanda Dobbins?

Uh, and it obviously, its success allowed Nancy to do a lot of other things, including Something's Gotta Give, which is a masterpiece. Yeah. I, why would I not take Coyote Ugly?

• 1:58:32Sean Fennessey?

  Cause it's a bad movie.

• 1:58:33Amanda Dobbins?

It is a really bad movie. John Goodman, he works at the toll booth and then he gets all the toll operators, you know, to make the tolls go at the same time because she's got it. She's nervous because she has stage fright. I will say the guy that she dates is not have the most charisma.

• 1:58:50Speaker 05

  Talk about the English guy?

• 1:58:51Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:58:52Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:58:52Speaker 06

  I mean.

• 1:58:53Speaker 05

  Australian, he's Australian.

• 1:58:54Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:58:55Speaker 06

  Okay.

• 1:58:55Amanda Dobbins?

  It's going this bad.

• 1:58:56Sean Fennessey?

Sorry. This guy's already watching podcasts.

• 1:59:00Speaker 06

  He's moved on.

• 1:59:01Sean Fennessey?

Yeah. Um, well, this has been.

• 1:59:03Speaker 06

  Boy.

• 1:59:04Sean Fennessey?

Exhaustive. Yeah. I thought we did a really good job today, man.

• 1:59:07Speaker 06

  That was fun.

• 1:59:07Sean Fennessey?

  Declarative.

• 1:59:08Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:59:09Sean Fennessey?

I think some people have significantly better draft boards than others.

• 1:59:12Speaker 06

  I mean, that's.

• 1:59:13Amanda Dobbins?

Do you want to say on the record?

• 1:59:13Speaker 06

It's in the eye of the beholder.

• 1:59:15Sean Fennessey?

I don't want to say out loud what I think. I'm very impressed with Van's draft. Frequently busting out the Patriot in the fifth round. That was an interesting choice.

• 1:59:24Speaker 05

Hey, fuck you guys. Right? I'll, I'll, I'll just like, I'll tell you straight up right now. I love that movie. I gotta be able to pick the movies I like, guys.

• 1:59:32Sean Fennessey?

  You're, you do.

• 1:59:33Amanda Dobbins?

What exercise was Jason Isaacs doing when you spoke to him at the gym?

• 1:59:37Speaker 05

He was on the basketball court.

• 1:59:39Speaker 06

  Oh.

• 1:59:40Speaker 05

He was over on the basketball court and I walked over to him. I said, you were great in the Patriot. And he said, I'll never forget. He goes, I kill a child. Within the first 10 minutes of the movie, it's not hard to be evil when you do that. That's it. That's exactly what he said.

• 1:59:54Speaker 06

  Honestly, he's a great response.

• 1:59:56Speaker 05

He was on the basketball court.

• 1:59:57Sean Fennessey?

  Can we get a claim?

• 1:59:58Speaker 05

He wasn't playing basketball. He was sitting on the bench. Maybe he had just played or something. I wa- walked over. I told him that. He was like, I kill a kid in the first 10 minutes of the movie. It's like, so he was like, it's not hard to do.

• 2:00:06Speaker 08

So you don't have the scout on Jason Isaacs?

• 2:00:08Speaker 05

No, no, as far as this game. I tell you what, though. The scouts on Englishman on the basketball court, way down.

• 2:00:13Speaker 08

  I, I can imagine.

• 2:00:14Speaker 05

I, there's other people that have been out there. Terrible.

• 2:00:18Amanda Dobbins?

What are you most surprised didn't get drafted?

• 2:00:20Sean Fennessey?

Well, we can, yeah, we can do a kind of quick honorable mentions. Um, I mean, there's a handful of like, but really well-liked critically films that didn't go, like Chuck and Buck didn't go, Mike White's and Miguel Arteta's movie, um, Croupier, which is Clive Owen's breakthrough, didn't go.

• 2:00:34Speaker 06

Wait, I just looked, okay, I looked that up while we were, oh, okay.

• 2:00:38Sean Fennessey?

Is it not eligible? I think it is.

• 2:00:39Speaker 06

I almost picked the Croupier, but then I double checked it and then it, and something I double checked said 1998, but I guess that was maybe like.

• 2:00:45Sean Fennessey?

I think the US release is 2000.

• 2:00:47Speaker 06

Anyway, I would have picked Clive Owen and Croupier.

• 2:00:49Sean Fennessey?

  Very good film.

• 2:00:49Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 2:00:50Sean Fennessey?

Uh, David Gordon Green's George Washington was this year. I like that movie quite a bit. Adam Sandler's Little Nicky, a little different from George Washington, but you know.

• 2:00:57Speaker 06

  A classic.

• 2:00:58Sean Fennessey?

Relevant film. A huge Tarantino, huge fan of that movie. Uh, Brian De Palma's Mission to Mars. Undrafted?

• 2:01:04Speaker 06

Mission Mars is coyote ugly level movie, is how I feel about that. You mean?

• 2:01:12Sean Fennessey?

Yes, and also a great LeAnn Rimes theme song to Mission of Mars as well. Neil LaButte's Nurse Betty?

• 2:01:18Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 2:01:18Sean Fennessey?

Which before it came out, I was like, this will probably be the coolest movie of all time, and then it was not that.

• 2:01:22Speaker 05

  Just kinda weird, yeah.

• 2:01:24Speaker 06

But it was like a good move for an A, so like, yeah.

• 2:01:26Sean Fennessey?

Huge hit, The Whole Nine Yards. Didn't talk about that?

• 2:01:28Speaker 05

  Oh.

• 2:01:29Speaker 08

I did love the whole nine yards.

• 2:01:30Speaker 06

I was actually expecting you to drop that.

• 2:01:32Speaker 05

That's a blind spot, because I really do enjoy that.

• 2:01:34Sean Fennessey?

  That's a cool movie.

• 2:01:34Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 2:01:35Sean Fennessey?

Inarituz Amores Perros was released in 2000.

• 2:01:38Speaker 06

  Yep.

• 2:01:38Sean Fennessey?

I think that's probably his best movie. U-571?

• 2:01:42Speaker 04

  Awesome.

• 2:01:42Sean Fennessey?

  Submarine movie.

• 2:01:44Speaker 06

I thought Chris, I mean, Seafaring.

• 2:01:46Sean Fennessey?

  Scary movie?

• 2:01:48Speaker 05

I was gonna pick it earlier, but I went with Meet the Foxes instead.

• 2:01:52Sean Fennessey?

Sam Raimi's The Gift? Which, as I've noted, is one of the very few movies ever made about ESP. You never...

• 2:01:59Speaker 06

When did you know that? You've known that before? Is that a thing you like to know?

• 2:02:03Sean Fennessey?

On this podcast at a certain point, and I was talking about Sam Raimi, probably to you.

• 2:02:07Speaker 06

  Oh, okay.

• 2:02:07Speaker 04

  You remember saying that?

• 2:02:09Sean Fennessey?

  I do, yeah.

• 2:02:10Speaker 04

  Wow.

• 2:02:11Speaker 06

Should we make more movies about ESP? Very fond of all of you, I love you guys.

• 2:02:17Sean Fennessey?

  Everyone's so weird.

• 2:02:21Speaker 06

The Last Basement Lore was born.

• 2:02:23Speaker 04

  What about Thirteen Days?

• 2:02:25Speaker 05

Oh, yeah. I do like that movie.

• 2:02:28Speaker 04

  I like that movie.

• 2:02:29Speaker 05

It's no Patriot, but... What about... The Patriot is good. I don't give a fuck what y'all talking about. Y'all, when was the last time y'all seen The Patriot before?

• 2:02:36Speaker 04

  It's been a minute.

• 2:02:38Speaker 08

I genuinely do like The Patriot.

• 2:02:40Speaker 04

What about Billy Bob Thornton's Cut of All the Pretty Horses?

• 2:02:43Sean Fennessey?

Well, that's unavailable to us, as we know.

• 2:02:48Sean Fennessey?

  Gone in 60 Seconds? Undrafted?

• 2:02:50Speaker 04

  I can't believe it, honestly.

• 2:02:51Speaker 05

A movie that's more style, is cool than it is good.

• 2:02:55Speaker 04

The trailer for that movie, you're like, this is gonna be the best movie of all time, and then the movie itself is actually quite poor.

• 2:03:00Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 2:03:01Sean Fennessey?

The Family Man, starring Nicolas Cage, was this year?

• 2:03:04Speaker 06

  Okay.

• 2:03:05Speaker 04

Vertical Limit with Chris O'Donnell and Bill Paxton?

• 2:03:08Sean Fennessey?

  Yep.

• 2:03:08Speaker 08

  Apex Mountain of Apex Mountains.

• 2:03:10Speaker 05

  Chris O'Donnell, what happened?

• 2:03:12Speaker 08

I think we know what happened.

• 2:03:14Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 2:03:14Sean Fennessey?

Another pod. He can't act. Um, Finding Forrester?

• 2:03:18Speaker 07

  That's right.

• 2:03:20Speaker 06

  Wow.

• 2:03:20Speaker 07

But he owns the kids a place.

• 2:03:23Sean Fennessey?

I'm sorry to Chris O'Donnell. He's a terrible actor. That's just what it is. He was shoved down our throat for eight years and I was like, why is this guy in these movies? He was, he was fucking everywhere.

• 2:03:34Speaker 07

And also he was on, so he, I think he used like his NCI whatever money. What was the most recorded TV line from the year 2000? Yeah. And was it Sean Connery saying, you're the man now, dog?

• 2:03:44Sean Fennessey?

  You're the man now, dog.

• 2:03:45Speaker 07

  From Finding Forrester.

• 2:03:46Sean Fennessey?

We all remember the soundboard famously on the, is it Y T M N D dot com? Does anybody remember this?

• 2:03:57Speaker 08

  Yes, of course.

• 2:03:58Sean Fennessey?

Yeah. Is that even available to us right now?

• 2:04:01Speaker 07

  You're the man now, dog.

• 2:04:02Sean Fennessey?

Oh, yeah. I forgot he was on that. Yeah. Uh, yeah.

• 2:04:05Speaker 07

This is the last thing you've ever been.

• 2:04:06Sean Fennessey?

  Dot com.

• 2:04:07Speaker 07

One of the five best picture companies did not get selected.

• 2:04:11Speaker 08

  Chocolat.

• 2:04:11Speaker 07

  Chocolat. Yeah.

• 2:04:12Speaker 06

I was, I was, uh, oh, I've seen, actually, book was better. The book is really good.

• 2:04:18Sean Fennessey?

Big episode from the book was better.

• 2:04:19Speaker 08

Do we have to review our, our picks?

• 2:04:21Sean Fennessey?

• 2:07:08Amanda Dobbins?

  We love you, Bob.

• 2:07:09Sean Fennessey?
