I ain't sports to have to play with. Stand up and walk now.

• 0:06Chris Ryan?

Hello and welcome to The Watch. My name is Chris Ryan. I am an editor at theringer.com. And joining me in the studio, it's Saturday night, it's Andy Greenwald.

• 0:18Andy Greenwald?

  Oh, that was classy.

• 0:19Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, man. What's going on?

• 0:20Andy Greenwald?

  Yeah.

• 0:21Chris Ryan?

Good to see you, Andy. Today, we're gonna talk a little bit about SNL 50. It's Saturday Night Live's 50th anniversary this weekend. And you and I are gonna do what will probably be a not particularly competitive two-man draft of our favorite SNL performers.

• 0:33Andy Greenwald?

Not competitive because I'm gonna dominate you like the Sixers. Sorry, the Eagles, D-line. You got, you pilled me. We were on Philly Special this morning. I just talked about the Eagles.

• 0:43Chris Ryan?

Your eyes are fucking dilated. Are you on Molly water right now?

• 0:46Andy Greenwald?

Cause you took, I'm Sixers in my head. I'm fired up.

• 0:49Chris Ryan?

Oh, my God. Andy, you know what? People can watch us on the YouTube channel, ringer-tv.

• 0:54Andy Greenwald?

  Now, they're gonna watch us.

• 0:55Chris Ryan?

They can watch us on the Spotify platform where they also listen to us at The Watch feed. You can follow us on Instagram at the watch pod underscore and you can email us any of your thoughts and concerns. The watch at spotify.com. It's fantastic to see you.

• 1:10Andy Greenwald?

I hope so. I feel like I'm worrying you.

• 1:12Chris Ryan?

Marathon here today. We've been on the Philly Special again. We had to bring it back to the, to Sheil. And then we have a pod today. We're gonna record our White Lotus thoughts. That'll be going up on Sunday night. Long weekend coming up. What are you, what are you, what are you feeling? How you doing?

• 1:28Andy Greenwald?

I'm flying. I gotta get back to work. I'm going back to London. Gotta escape the rain in LA.

• 1:32Chris Ryan?

Not flying because you've adjusted your own serotonin levels with chemicals.

• 1:37Andy Greenwald?

What's the blue stuff that you were telling me about?

• 1:38Chris Ryan?

Methylene blue. That's what our health secretary is, is taking, yes.

• 1:43Andy Greenwald?

  Is that better than fluoride?

• 1:44Chris Ryan?

  I don't know. I don't think so.

• 1:45Andy Greenwald?

How are you feeling about the long weekend? Valentine's Day, romantic plans ahead for you?

• 1:48Chris Ryan?

Uh, solo. My wife is out of town.

• 1:52Andy Greenwald?

Are you raw dogging Valentine's Day?

• 1:55Andy Greenwald?

He's gonna sit quietly at a restaurant, not eat?

• 1:59Chris Ryan?

I have to tell you how many, I cannot tell you how many times I've nearly texted a friend and been like, "What up for Friday?" Like, not forgetting it's Valentine's Day and just be like, "Wanna hang out?"

• 2:09Andy Greenwald?

  You should third wheel.

• 2:11Chris Ryan?

  I'm not gonna do that.

• 2:12Andy Greenwald?

  That would be fun.

• 2:12Chris Ryan?

I'm not gonna do that. Uh, you know, maybe I'll see Brave New World again. Just see if I missed anything the first time. Andy, I have a couple of news items to discuss with you. They're all HBO related.

• 2:24Andy Greenwald?

Okay. I have a couple headlines for you, too. I don't think you're ready for them.

• 2:27Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 2:28Andy Greenwald?

  You go first.

• 2:28Chris Ryan?

No, I want you to go first.

• 2:29Andy Greenwald?

  No, no, yours are better.

• 2:30Chris Ryan?

  Are they?

• 2:31Andy Greenwald?

  Yeah.

• 2:31Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 2:32Andy Greenwald?

  Yeah.

• 2:32Chris Ryan?

  Are yours TV related?

• 2:33Andy Greenwald?

No, it's all about methylene blue.

• 2:37Andy Greenwald?

  Let's go, Blue! Let's go!

• 2:41Chris Ryan?

Oh, fuck us. Uh, I wanted to tell you a little bit about a little bit of a state of the HBO Union that got delivered by Francesca Orsi, who's the head of drama over at HBO. She talked to Deadline, um, I think some other folks, but Deadline specifically at the White Lotus premiere that was the other night. I know you went to that.

• 2:59Andy Greenwald?

I was there. I was not part of the gaggle, though.

• 3:02Chris Ryan?

I went to, uh, go see Cameron Winter's solo show, uh, at the Barnstall Theater. Yeah.

• 3:08Andy Greenwald?

There are two wolves, huh? And one's cooler than the other?

• 3:11Chris Ryan?

  No big deal.

• 3:11Andy Greenwald?

  Yeah.

• 3:12Chris Ryan?

It was pretty moving. Uh, and here are a couple of things that she talked about.

• 3:16Andy Greenwald?

  Okay.

• 3:17Chris Ryan?

True Detective, season five. Issa Lopez is coming back after Night Country. Uh, has a location.

• 3:24Andy Greenwald?

  Oh, did she announce it?

• 3:25Chris Ryan?

  Yeah. Jamaica, Queens.

• 3:28Andy Greenwald?

Wow, that was a roller coaster for me. You said Jamaica, and I was like, is it Get Millie Black again?

• 3:32Chris Ryan?

  Um.

• 3:33Andy Greenwald?

  Jamaica, Queens.

• 3:34Chris Ryan?

I have dreamed, I've long dreamed of a New York City True Detective.

• 3:37Andy Greenwald?

  Yeah, that's cool.

• 3:38Chris Ryan?

Um, I had no casting announcements. It sounds like True Detective, season five, is going to shoot at some point this year, uh, and that it will be arriving in early 27, which is, we have to come up with a phrase for like, you know, survive till 25. Heaven in 27?

• 3:55Andy Greenwald?

  I love it.

• 3:55Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 3:56Andy Greenwald?

  I love it.

• 3:56Chris Ryan?

Um, yeah, I'm very excited for that in, just because of, on the setting alone, even though I kind of like tailed off of Night Country a little bit at the end. Thought it started really strong.

• 4:06Andy Greenwald?

  Yeah.

• 4:07Chris Ryan?

  Um.

• 4:08Andy Greenwald?

Well, there's something to be said also for letting people get some reps in. Now, I know that get some reps in is an extremely expensive enterprise to make seasons of television in the prestige streaming era, but- I am eager to see what she does with another crack at it.

• 4:21Chris Ryan?

I've not checked Nick Pizzolato's Instagram yet, so I don't know how he's feeling about it.

• 4:25Andy Greenwald?

Oh, I can't wait for you to do that and then tell me about it.

• 4:29Chris Ryan?

A couple of other updates from Orsi. She talked a little bit about Night of the Seven Kingdoms, which is the George R.R. Martin novella set about 90 years before Game of Thrones begins. And they are very high on it. The reason I wanted to bring this up, it's coming in the summer, is Orsi talked a little bit about how it's a more intimate, lower budget and requires less VFX. So they think that they're going to be able to get these seasons turned around more quickly. And they might even, if it gets renewed, which is always the HBO, like, we'll see, you know? Or it's like, I bet you guys have an idea. They might shoot two and three back to back.

• 5:07Andy Greenwald?

  Nice.

• 5:07Chris Ryan?

So that these seasons get out a little bit more consistently, which I think is critical for like the television business to sustain itself is to get these shows out within some semblance of reasonable time.

• 5:21Andy Greenwald?

That's hugely important for a continued relationship on the audience level. But I think that what you're speaking to is also hugely important for the potential longer term financial viability of the entire industry, which is not everything can be or needs to be, but even can be, a gigantic world killing blockbuster. I mean, that was the trouble that Marvel got into where all the TV shows had budgets that essentially equaled their movies.

• 5:44Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 5:44Andy Greenwald?

That's not sustainable on any side of it. So to find a Game of Thrones that doesn't cost the same amount as Game of Thrones.

• 5:50Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 5:50Andy Greenwald?

Which House of the Dragon does would be a huge win. And, you know, and then the trickle down of that, it might just be a different vibe, which I would appreciate.

• 5:58Chris Ryan?

We might be craving. She talked a little bit about House of the Dragon. That's going to come in 26.

• 6:04Andy Greenwald?

What's your cute rhyming for 26?

• 6:09Andy Greenwald?

  Hit the bricks.

• 6:10Chris Ryan?

Hit the bricks in 26? Does that mean everybody gets fired? I don't want that.

• 6:14Andy Greenwald?

  Yeah, that's not good.

• 6:15Chris Ryan?

Uh, well, I'll think about it. Anyway, they're basically like-

• 6:19Andy Greenwald?

It's all fixed in 26. There you go.

• 6:21Chris Ryan?

Don't worry, we're opening with the Battle of the Gullet.

• 6:24Andy Greenwald?

  They keep saying that?

• 6:25Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, they're like, it's happening.

• 6:26Andy Greenwald?

What if they opened with, um, Nat Smith talking to the tree a little bit more? Just being like, "Ooh, what else do you have? What wisdom is in the tree?"

• 6:36Chris Ryan?

  He's not singing to it.

• 6:37Andy Greenwald?

"Can we reuse this set? Please? Please? Amortizing it."

• 6:42Chris Ryan?

Um, there's also another series, uh, that's in the works. They, she did not specify. She said it was in the Targaryen line. I bet that's Aegon's conquest.

• 6:52Andy Greenwald?

  Listen to you.

• 6:53Chris Ryan?

Just if I had to guess.

• 6:54Andy Greenwald?

Is that what you were rapping about at the Barnstall Art Center with Cameron Winter?

• 6:58Chris Ryan?

I was like, "Hey, brother, that's a cool vintage t-shirt you have on. What do you think about Aegon's conquest? Does it have legs?"

• 7:05Andy Greenwald?

"What other gems are in the Targaryen line, my man?"

• 7:09Chris Ryan?

Um, it's an interesting year for them because Task is coming out in the fall. Uh, that's the Brad Inglesby show. That, for just course, he's talked about like, basically being like, "I have season tickets for Brad Inglesby, and if he wants to keep making this, let's go."

• 7:23Andy Greenwald?

  Uh, same.

• 7:24Chris Ryan?

Same. Uh, that's his Philadelphia crime show with Mark Ruffalo. It sounds like it and industry, not it, Derry, welcome to Derry, and industry will be the sort of, uh, last two big notes of the year.

• 7:35Andy Greenwald?

Do you wanna, I can, Kaya, can you mute me while Chris could deliver, is there, do you wanna talk about another upcoming HBO show?

• 7:41Chris Ryan?

Oh, yeah, sure. Um, it's rumored that-

• 7:45Andy Greenwald?

I'm gonna just dead, I'm gonna ice cream you.

• 7:46Chris Ryan?

I mean, I, we, like, we're not, okay. John Lithgow is apparent, Lithgow is apparently gonna play Dumbledore in the Harry Potter series.

• 7:57Andy Greenwald?

  What else you got?

• 7:58Chris Ryan?

Uh, what else you got? You said you had a bunch of headlines for me.

• 8:01Andy Greenwald?

Okay, yeah, so, um, I can't believe you didn't jump all over this. This is a headline that I'm super excited about. Um, Miles Teller, which is Fantastic Four First Steps, quote, "All the best."

• 8:13Chris Ryan?

Honestly dude, he just won a Super Bowl. I'm sure he's just like.

• 8:16Andy Greenwald?

That's so cool though. I just like the idea of being like, good luck with that.

• 8:21Chris Ryan?

That's he get, you know what? That's probably somebody door stopping him and being like, you know, hey.

• 8:25Andy Greenwald?

No, he was doing promo for The Gorge, this film, and he was just like, I don't wish anybody.

• 8:30Chris Ryan?

Ooh, maybe I'll fire up the gorge tomorrow night.

• 8:32Andy Greenwald?

That is a sexy Valentine's Day for my guy. You're gonna unwrap a whole bag of Hershey kisses and just dive into the gorge of yourself? Like, just gorge while watching the gorge? Hashtag gorge. That's awesome. Anyway, he, it's, I'm not, I'm not dragging him. He's, this is, you, you rarely actually get quotes like this where an actor says, "I don't wish anybody to be part of a bomb." Like.

• 8:55Chris Ryan?

Yeah, it took him a while to recover from that.

• 8:56Andy Greenwald?

  That's rough.

• 8:57Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 8:57Andy Greenwald?

Um, okay, one other thing. Um, speaking of the Targaryen timeline, were you excited to learn, to learn that Amazon Prime Video's The Rings of Power has been renewed for season three, but plans a major time jump?

• 9:09Chris Ryan?

Oh, I didn't know that. I didn't finish season two.

• 9:12Andy Greenwald?

They're jumping to the 1970s. So it's gonna be like New York when it's kinda bankrupt, down on its luck. There's just orcs just kinda wandering time square.

• 9:21Chris Ryan?

  Who said Drop Dead?

• 9:22Andy Greenwald?

Uh, Ford. Ford to City, Drop Dead.

• 9:24Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, Ford to Sauron.

• 9:25Andy Greenwald?

Sauron to City, Drop Dead. What if it was the new season of Rings of Power, but it was the deuce?

• 9:32Chris Ryan?

Yeah. It was like, could you, would punk thrive in Mordor?

• 9:35Andy Greenwald?

Just, listen, we can dream. I just think it's funny. I do think it's funny that we've become so fixated on like, where does this fit in on the sacred timeline? You know what I mean? Like of just all these made up things?

• 9:48Chris Ryan?

  Uh huh.

• 9:49Andy Greenwald?

That's, that's just funny to me. I mean, like, that's great. Like, you know what time they should jump to? The time of the movies that everybody liked.

• 9:54Chris Ryan?

  I know, it's true.

• 9:55Andy Greenwald?

That's my advice. People like that.

• 9:56Chris Ryan?

  I was watching, uh,

• 9:59Chris Ryan?

no, The Two Towers the other day was on HBO. I was like, this is a good movie.

• 10:04Andy Greenwald?

  Yeah, it's not complicated.

• 10:06Chris Ryan?

Although I really, I still stand by the fact that if, for the real heads.

• 10:11Andy Greenwald?

  Yeah.

• 10:11Chris Ryan?

They need to make a cut. Without Frodo and Sam and Gollum? Because those guys do the same thing for nine hours.

• 10:18Andy Greenwald?

  That's a drag, yeah.

• 10:19Chris Ryan?

Yeah, they're just climbing up a mountain.

• 10:20Andy Greenwald?

  Why not?

• 10:21Chris Ryan?

And getting betrayed by a goblin.

• 10:22Andy Greenwald?

What if they were like, Amazon Prime Video announces the new season is just The Three Towers? Like, there was a third tower the whole time. Would you, would, would, would you like that? No, it does say that they're jumping to the height of the War of the Elves.

• 10:36Chris Ryan?

  Oh, okay.

• 10:37Andy Greenwald?

Which is incredible that their initial pitch was like, we're just gonna slow walk the War of the Elves. We're gonna have the skirmish of the elves, the disagreement of the elves.

• 10:44Chris Ryan?

But do you think that they're like, we need more battling here? Or do you, I, I?

• 10:48Andy Greenwald?

Yeah, I mean, it's just this thing that where they, where they, where you set down your, your, your fence posts of the story you want to tell, and you don't set it at the most interesting thing. You know, this is a recurring thing with the big IP stuff where it's like, we're gonna make a show about the time before the interesting stuff happened.

• 11:01Chris Ryan?

Yeah, right, right. Well, it worked for Rogue One.

• 11:03Andy Greenwald?

Give me them wars. Let's go.

• 11:06Chris Ryan?

  Watch some elves in combat.

• 11:08Andy Greenwald?

Yeah, I wanna see some elves like, struggling with like, you know, the cheap, but, but the rents are cheap and so art is on the rise.

• 11:14Chris Ryan?

  Saving private elf.

• 11:15Andy Greenwald?

What if it was Rachel Kushner's The Flamethrowers?

• 11:18Chris Ryan?

  Uh huh.

• 11:19Andy Greenwald?

  But with elves.

• 11:21Chris Ryan?

Is that the only way that The Flamethrowers could make it to the screen?

• 11:24Andy Greenwald?

  Apparently.

• 11:24Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 11:25Andy Greenwald?

  Not mad at it.

• 11:27Chris Ryan?

Uh, we're here to talk about Saturday Night Live.

• 11:28Andy Greenwald?

I, I did have one other one, but I'm, we don't need to do it.

• 11:30Chris Ryan?

  You can tell me.

• 11:32Andy Greenwald?

  It, it was just-

• 11:32Chris Ryan?

You're the one with the heart out.

• 11:33Andy Greenwald?

I, I do, I have to go. It was just that I was excited to learn that Elon Musk's sister is pouring her heart and finances into Passion Flix, a steamy streaming platform built on the unifying power of love.

• 11:44Chris Ryan?

You laugh, he may control all of our money soon, you're gonna be working for Passion Flix.

• 11:47Andy Greenwald?

I can't wait, I have some pitches. I have a passion for flicks.

• 11:51Chris Ryan?

Prior patch, season two, but more humping. Yeah.

• 11:54Andy Greenwald?

By the way, that was my mistake. I'm sitting here being like, you should tell the most interesting part of the story. Yeah, I was like, season two is just an orgy. Why didn't I lead with that?

• 12:04Andy Greenwald?

I was so naive, so naive.

• 12:07Chris Ryan?

  Um, SNL, man.

• 12:10Andy Greenwald?

  Okay.

• 12:10Chris Ryan?

I was thinking about this the other day. Cause I was listening to Bill and Bellany on Bill's pod, great segment. And they were talking about all the inside baseball stuff. There's also a really good Reeves Weidman piece in New York Magazine about life after Lorne, or whether there will ever be a life after Lorne for the show. It's a really cool portrait of this guy in his eighties, who's still in control of the show, but not doing as much as he obviously used to just because of his age.

• 12:40Chris Ryan?

And like, who are the prospective kind of era parents? And would there be ones? So Tina Fey and Seth Meyers have been kicked around.

• 12:48Chris Ryan?

And I was wondering whether or not you go in for the palace intrigue part of SNL and all of the, the kind of behind the scenes.

• 12:56Andy Greenwald?

  Oh, yeah.

• 12:57Chris Ryan?

Mythmaking that happens as much as you do, or more than you do for the show. Because I think sometimes in certain eras, it's like SNL can ebb and flow, but the SNL gossip industry is always at a constant.

• 13:10Andy Greenwald?

Yes, I mean, I'm always fascinated by that. I'm just fascinated by the, like, the real workplace economics of making something funny. But, but the longevity of it is the extra piece, right? That like, that these same offices have been witnessed to half a century of creative and financial skirmishes.

• 13:30Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 13:30Andy Greenwald?

All controlled by the tastes and whims of the same guy. It's absolutely insane. It's totally unprecedented. And I thought one of the more interesting things about that article, the Reeves Weidman article, wasn't just that, you know, the specifics of whether Lorne hangs out as much or isn't as involved creatively, but more about how he has so completely centralized and coalesced his power so that he is essentially a, like a third arm of Comcast NBC Universal. And. If and when he goes, there is no plan for how to account for any of it.

• 14:03Chris Ryan?

  Right.

• 14:03Andy Greenwald?

That he is above the budget of anything, that he hand selects the executive that covers Late Night because he is in charge of all of NBC's Late Night programming.

• 14:12Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, he disvalidated Seth Meyers.

• 14:14Andy Greenwald?

I didn't know this, although I guess anyone paying attention, just in terms of like the sets and the guest stars and everything over the last few years, but that every episode of SNL costs $4 million, that it is the most expensive show that they make, basically.

• 14:29Chris Ryan?

Yeah, and also that there are all these hilarious reasons why that is like, they have very small elevators and they shoot it in a skyscraper rather than like at a soundstage in Long Island or something like that.

• 14:39Andy Greenwald?

Moved it out to Queens, that's essentially part of it. It is outrageous and unprecedented and, you know, 10 years ago, we probably on this podcast idly talked about, because they did the SNL 40, I mentioned it the other day, and the reason for having that big party was Lorne Michaels saying, "Well, I'm still here and I'm still doing the job." And also, all of our original cast members, or many of our original cast members, of course, are healthy enough to participate and who knows if that'll be the case 10 years from now. And at the time, we did the same kind of, you know, back and forth banter that everyone did, which is, is Seth Meyers being groomed to take over this job or would Tina Fey ever want it? 10 years later, it's the same candidates, none

• 15:20Andy Greenwald?

of whom really, they all make sense, but who would really want this? It's an impossible chalice and an impossible responsibility, and yet SNL seems more essential to NBC's brand than maybe at any other point in its history. So it is a succession drama waiting to happen, even as the comedy continues to deliver for them.

• 15:39Chris Ryan?

It's, for me, like, as an institution and as an idea, it's not that it's cool, like, it's cutting-edge comedy, because obviously you can go all over the place to find comedy that is probably a little bit less restricted or it doesn't have to work in like the sort of formats that they have. But the sheer idea that they do this.

• 16:04Chris Ryan?

  Is really cool to me.

• 16:05Andy Greenwald?

  Yes.

• 16:05Chris Ryan?

And it is still very romantic to me that like it's a quintessentially New York thing that takes advantage of the nocturnal kind of energy that New York has. Where these writers, perhaps with less cocaine now, are still staying there till one, two in the morning all week. They shoot this show, they do a dress, then they do the live show on Saturday night. Then they go out until five in the, six in the morning at the after-party and then they start and do it all over again next week. And even though it's essentially now being, I think, processed or consumed in a different way. Because largely it's like, for lots of people, I think they wake up on Sunday and they just

• 16:50Chris Ryan?

sort of watch the clips. So it's not really the experience of like, oh, I can't believe I'm like participating in this live event. It still seems to be one of the few monocultural kind of experiences that we can have on television, even in its diminished state, even in its fractured kind of, hey, here's a bunch of clips of this, rather than like a one and a half hour experience. I just still have nothing but admiration for what it takes to make it. I've gotten to go once.

• 17:18Andy Greenwald?

  Did you really?

• 17:19Chris Ryan?

Yeah, I went in 2007 for the Jake Gyllenhaal episode. And it was awesome. And, you know, I was talking to Craig Horlback, went to the Timothy Chalamet episode a couple weeks ago.

• 17:31Andy Greenwald?

He was on screen, I saw him, he looked great.

• 17:32Chris Ryan?

And he too was like, I can't believe it. Like, you just don't know how much work is happening right off camera to get the next sketch ready, you know?

• 17:41Andy Greenwald?

And how small that room is, it's tiny. I've been in the studio, but I've never been to a theater.

• 17:45Chris Ryan?

And just the whole thing with like, when they're bringing you up, like, you're basically standing in a hallway and you're seeing the cast members running around, getting ready. It really is like, you know, eighth grade play levels of like, high school, you know, theater production, applied to, you know, having movie stars and music stars and also these iconic TV comedy actors showing up every week for work.

• 18:07Andy Greenwald?

And the immediacy and the unpredictability of it has just continued, not just made it Stay relevant. It has tripled its relevance, you know, like just the other week when Martin Short hosted again and he joined the Five Timers Club and like I I will never miss a Five Timers Club sketch because it's still a thrilling.

• 18:26Chris Ryan?

Do you ever watch it live quote unquote? I mean like.

• 18:28Andy Greenwald?

I don't stay up that late.

• 18:29Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 18:29Andy Greenwald?

I didn't even stay up that late for the Eagles celebration. I don't, SNL is not going to do it, but I used to. Um, and I remember that was like you built in high school, you'd build a weekend around that. Um, and like the fact that all these people will show up and do the knowing winks and the in jokes and anybody could be there is so electric. It's so exciting and it's still so fun and it's remarkable. Like we, as we have done this podcast and talked about the decline of everything we used to think of as TV, whereas the only things that have lasting value and increasing enormous incomprehensible value is live sports. SNL is the live sports of comedy.

• 19:05Chris Ryan?

I can't remember what the, it's the actual data point is, but it's some, it's basically the most popular non, non-football television.

• 19:13Andy Greenwald?

It's the highest rated show on NBC.

• 19:15Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 19:15Andy Greenwald?

Week to week, which is crazy considering when it airs and that was never the goal.

• 19:19Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 19:19Andy Greenwald?

Uh, or even something they could have even considered. So it's fun and it's fun that it gets to remain an institution in our lives like as much as we want it to be. Dip in and dip out.

• 19:28Chris Ryan?

Uh, Bill has been talking, uh, I, you know, I, for a while, I think that there's been a rumor about this and Bill talked about it with Bellany on his podcast the other day about the idea that when Lorne retires, uh, or if there was any sort of, you know, weakening of the, of SNL that Netflix would launch their own, like basically Friday Night Live because Sarandos is such a huge comedy fan.

• 19:52Andy Greenwald?

  That's interesting.

• 19:52Chris Ryan?

And is basically obsessed with Lorne anyway, and has obviously made all these inroads.

• 19:57Andy Greenwald?

He goes to a lot of tapings a year. He's going to the 50th.

• 19:59Chris Ryan?

They have the Netflix is a joke festival already, like he's given Mulaney this show, you know, like that he's they're, they're upping their live thing anyway, but part of it for me at least, I, I, you know, I don't know what it is because I've only been to it once and like, I don't really actually even consume that much media about it compared to like Sean or Bill. There's something about.

• 20:26Chris Ryan?

The studio, there's something about 30 Rock, there's something about that specific vibe that the that the bandstand like has, that is why I keep going back to it at all. And I don't know if it's replicable, or you'd have to really like reimagine it. I hope, I hope if anybody makes a run at it, it's, it's actually like something different, rather than it's Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, you know?

• 20:48Andy Greenwald?

Which didn't work for any number of reasons, but, but, but, physical space is one of them. Yeah. Lauren has always understood that. What, before we get into talking cast, what is your, do you carry a immaculate cast in your head? Is there, what is your era?

• 21:03Chris Ryan?

There's a degree to which it's probably dictated by, if you're not a lifelong super fan obsessive, then it's probably your late middle school through high school generation. Like, cause I think that's when your first, at least in my house, like allowed to stay up later, you know? And then Saturdays are like this, like, it's not like you have like super a lot of plans on a Saturday night, 14 or 13, but you can stay up and watch SNL for a while, or at least I was. So that Phil Hartman 88 to 94 run is my golden era.

• 21:35Andy Greenwald?

So, so Dennis Miller into Norm MacDonald, Mike Myers, Adam Sandler, Dana Carvey. Yeah.

• 21:41Chris Ryan?

  Dan Hook's, yeah.

• 21:42Andy Greenwald?

That's the formative one for me too, although I kind of think in preference, the 10 years later cast with Tina and Amy and Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig and Forte.

• 21:54Chris Ryan?

  Also amazing, yeah.

• 21:55Andy Greenwald?

Like, I think that that and Maya, like, I think in, we could debate it, maybe we will debate that too at some point, like, that just might be the most loaded cast in terms of talent, and also chemistry. And then, because a lot, because our era was a lot about like individual greatness, like people creating characters, trying to get their movie franchises, trying to sort of break apart. And you could pull out, you know, even Chris Rock was briefly there in that era of like people who had individual personalities. But that early 2000s cast, you know, even just last night, Tina, Amy and Seth were all on Fallon. Like, there is a personal camaraderie and closeness, but also a complimentary. So it's a question of like, do you like a heliocentric style play?

• 22:35Chris Ryan?

I think there's something to be said to that.

• 22:37Andy Greenwald?

  The Chris Princeton passes.

• 22:38Chris Ryan?

There, you know, that group of people. Because for as many people who left SNL then became movie stars like Mike Myers or whatever, you know, and Hartman, obviously, his life ended tragically, but was like on news radio. You know, it wasn't like people necessarily always left. I think what the Pohler, Faye, Myers generation had was

• 23:02Chris Ryan?

tubes to go into that would like send them out into the world that made a lot of sense.

• 23:05Andy Greenwald?

  Yes.

• 23:06Chris Ryan?

You know, Amy Poehler went and did Parks and Rec and Seth Meyers did Weekend Update for a very long time and then became a late night host and like,

• 23:13Andy Greenwald?

This was also the tentacles and the consolidation of power.

• 23:16Chris Ryan?

Learn unto herself with her shows. Yeah.

• 23:18Andy Greenwald?

But this is the consolidation of power and the understanding of the levers of power that only someone like Lorne Michaels can accrue over time. Because what he did at the beginning was, you know, he held on to people as tightly as he could. And you, you really could only make a movie in the summer if it lined up for you. You could not take time off from the show. That has changed radically in the last few years. Where he's let people like Keenan and Aidy Bryan.

• 23:39Chris Ryan?

  Bowen Yang.

• 23:40Andy Greenwald?

And Bowen Yang, Bowen Yang went to do Wicked, but Aidy and Keenan made separate shows that took them away.

• 23:45Chris Ryan?

I mean, Heidi Garg is on shrinking. I mean, like, people are like doing TV shows now.

• 23:49Andy Greenwald?

So that was, that was more of a loosening of the reins. But what he did 20 years ago was he was just like, I will build you, as you said, the escape pods to go into, which led to him pollinating all of late night, taking over The Tonight Show and then The Late Night Show with Fallon and Myers. Producing credit through Broadway Video on 30 Rock and basically just continuing to stay involved in people's post-SNL life. Having the financial stake and you could say maybe a fatherly or creative stake as well. That's, that's certainly changed. And there's, there's been interesting conversations recently about how like it's just not a star making vehicle anymore. But it is a brand burnishing thing or reputation making thing.

• 24:31Chris Ryan?

What was the last person who was just like fully minted by that? Pete Davidson?

• 24:36Andy Greenwald?

  Yeah, probably.

• 24:37Chris Ryan?

But also Pete Davidson like stuck around for a really long time because like, and, and And for what? Like, you know, I think he probably just really enjoyed it, but like-

• 24:45Andy Greenwald?

Yeah, I mean, you could say it it it still makes stars, but maybe it's maybe the conversation is more about like, what are stars anymore anyway? Because Mulaney is an SNL star, but he made what like a handful of appearances at the Weekend Update desk in front of the camera until he started coming back as a host.

• 25:00Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 25:01Andy Greenwald?

Like, he's so thoroughly defined by and suffused with the DNA of that show and wrote some of the greatest sketches ever, but um he wasn't like, he he didn't get a holding deal at Paramount for a movie because of his one appearance that one week.

• 25:14Chris Ryan?

Um, are you like, when it comes to like a 50th celebration thing like this, I remember 40 was like cool, but like very long and mostly about like, you know, let's bring this person back to do this, this character. Uh, are you excited for 50?

• 25:31Andy Greenwald?

I am excited for 50. It is gonna be odd watching it uh on like a pirate VPN Peacock feed or something. I don't know what the deal is in the UK.

• 25:40Chris Ryan?

  4pm.

• 25:40Andy Greenwald?

But uh, 4pm the next day.

• 25:42Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 25:44Andy Greenwald?

But yeah, I'm really, I I am excited because I I am a sucker for this stuff. I like it when like the crowd work, like in the 40th, when Seinfeld came up to do a bit and then he's talking to Larry David, who's in the crowd and he's talking like, I like when these things crash into each other because they share this DNA. It is a, one of the few throwbacks to Hollywood or show business that we even have anymore.

• 26:03Chris Ryan?

The crowd thing is interesting because I, as Bill and Bellany discussed, this is the hottest ticket like in recent showbiz memory.

• 26:11Andy Greenwald?

There's like 100 chairs in that room, right?

• 26:13Chris Ryan?

I think it's like 300 people can go to it and like you're talking about a guest list of potentially thousands between uh former cast members, people who've worked on the show, musical guests that might be luminaries that you'd want to bring back.

• 26:26Andy Greenwald?

  Lorne's pals.

• 26:26Chris Ryan?

Friends of Lorne Michaels, NBC executives, Comcast executives and guest hosts who would be brought back in. So that's a pretty interesting.

• 26:35Andy Greenwald?

  Is Craig going?

• 26:36Chris Ryan?

Uh, no. Craig didn't, I don't think Craig made the cut, but I do think it's pretty fascinating like what kind of room it'll be.

• 26:44Andy Greenwald?

  It'll be a warm room?

• 26:45Chris Ryan?

Well, it's not, but it's not like fans, right? Like, it's not like people who come, go to see Sarah live or have been waiting outside of 30 Rock for five hours to get in. It's like people who are like part of the show. So I could see it being like a very- Boisterous crowd, but I also could see it being a little bit different than every other Saturday Night Live.

• 27:03Andy Greenwald?

Well, one thing that you hear about alums of the show is that it is always high school forever. And that, you know, there is that alum feeling when you go back and suddenly all the old resentments or petty stuff just washes over you.

• 27:14Chris Ryan?

Do you think Marc Maron got invited?

• 27:17Andy Greenwald?

I can't wait to hear his thoughts on it.

• 27:20Andy Greenwald?

But I think that, you know, Maron famously has his story about being rebuffed, but I feel like even the people who made it still carry some of that.

• 27:26Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 27:27Andy Greenwald?

That sense of being rebuffed. So, yeah, that'll be an interesting element as well.

• 27:33Chris Ryan?

We were gonna draft our favorite performers.

• 27:35Andy Greenwald?

Can I, yeah, so we, so the assignment here is that we are each gonna draft a seven-person cast. We are also going to each draft a

• 27:46Chris Ryan?

  Update anchor.

• 27:46Andy Greenwald?

Update anchor and a digital shorts maker.

• 27:49Chris Ryan?

  Sure.

• 27:50Andy Greenwald?

Even before they were called digital shorts, but a filmmaker who makes stuff for

• 27:53Chris Ryan?

  For SNL shorts.

• 27:57Andy Greenwald?

Here are the lanes to success as an SNL cast member, I think. Tell me how you feel about this and give me an example if you have one, because I forgot to write them next to the things that I thought of. Okay. There are jesters, who are just people who are reliable. They will make you laugh. And I feel like Phil

• 28:14Chris Ryan?

  Chris Farley.

• 28:14Andy Greenwald?

Bill Murray, no, I have a different category for Farley. You can have more than, you can fit into more than one category.

• 28:18Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 28:19Andy Greenwald?

But someone like, just make you laugh all the time. That's like a Murray, a Farrell type. Glue guy, can play anything, can do anything, always be solid, always be good. That's the classic Phil Hartman. That's what Keenan has morphed into, I think. Kinda need an impressionist, back from the, like, Rich Hall days, all the way up to Dana Carvey and Bill Hader.

• 28:39Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 28:42Andy Greenwald?

Melissa Villasenor, I believe, did some impressions on the show. Wild card, a completely unique and idiosyncratic sense of humor that doesn't really fit into the overall chemical dynamics of the show, but in fact makes their own compound every time they show up. I would categorize a Will Forte as this. I'm sure there are 100 other better examples, but he was just front of mind. Um, there's a

• 29:04Chris Ryan?

Like, I would almost say like, like weird, like almost out there comedy, yeah.

• 29:09Andy Greenwald?

  An avant garde comedian type.

• 29:10Chris Ryan?

  So you got jester impressionist.

• 29:12Andy Greenwald?

Kyle Mooney would be one as well, I think, in that wildcard category.

• 29:15Chris Ryan?

  Jester impressionist glue guy wildcard.

• 29:17Andy Greenwald?

Wild card. There's a long tradition of the classy lady, whether, um, you know, by, by performance or just general vibe. That started with, uh, Jane Curtin, uh, Jan Hooks was one of our favorites growing up. Um, the, uh, music man, someone who probably would rather be playing with the band.

• 29:36Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 29:36Andy Greenwald?

Uh, Armisen, uh, Ackroyd, um, people like that, uh, Fallon even to a degree. Um, the over, the big kid. That's where I would also put Farley, um, Belushi, like people who are just going to be absolutely, and Sandler to a degree too, like be absolutely silly at times. Um, and then it's always helpful to have an old head in the cast, someone who's might be a little bit older, a little bit removed. That's the Daryl Hammond, who was also an impressionist. That's what, again, what Keenan has become. Um, those are my archetypes.

• 30:11Chris Ryan?

Old head. I don't even, how many other examples beyond?

• 30:16Andy Greenwald?

Um, well, it generally like people who weirdly like Chevy Chase was a little bit older than some of the people in the cast originally, I believe. And he sort of stood apart or placed himself apart. Um, the infamously like the Dick Ebersol seasons, um, when he just, when he replaced Lauren briefly. And then even when Lauren came back that first year, I think they brought in some bigger names. That's when Martin Short joined the cast.

• 30:38Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 30:38Andy Greenwald?

I think Michael McKean joined the cast later in his career. I think that, um, who was, there was some guys from Kids in the Hall who briefly came down.

• 30:46Chris Ryan?

  Uh, Dave.

• 30:47Andy Greenwald?

  Not Dave Foley, but.

• 30:49Chris Ryan?

  Bruce McDonald?

• 30:49Andy Greenwald?

I don't know if it was Bruce McDonald or Scott McKinney, uh, Scott, not, um, Mark McKinney.

• 30:54Chris Ryan?

  Mark McKinney did.

• 30:54Andy Greenwald?

It was Mark McKinney joined the cast. So like getting someone who is a little bit established in a comedic lane and having them folding them in.

• 31:00Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 31:01Andy Greenwald?

But I, I can take pushback. I don't know if there's a tried and true test of this, and I'm definitely not drafting to fit this perfectly.

• 31:08Chris Ryan?

Yeah. Okay. So we're not drafting into these categories.

• 31:10Andy Greenwald?

  No, no, no, no.

• 31:11Chris Ryan?

Seven favorites and we can mention like what they might be able to slide into.

• 31:14Andy Greenwald?

  Yeah, exactly.

• 31:14Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 31:15Andy Greenwald?

And it'll be really interesting what happens when you grab my four favorites and I only have like 12 here.

• 31:20Chris Ryan?

  Well.

• 31:20Andy Greenwald?

Cause you're, you're, here's the last thing we should say. You are the Mel Kiper of this stuff. You are the draft king.

• 31:27Chris Ryan?

No, I'm not. I often embarrass myself in these situations where I get distracted by like a conversation I'm having. And then fuck up. I just did this yesterday on a big picture draft, so.

• 31:37Andy Greenwald?

Were you drafting favorite scenes in Captain America Brave New World?

• 31:41Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 31:42Andy Greenwald?

  Cool. Cool. Okay.

• 31:45Chris Ryan?

Um, I'm gonna give you the first pick.

• 31:47Andy Greenwald?

You get the first pick. Yeah, you should.

• 31:48Chris Ryan?

No, I'm giving you the first pick.

• 31:51Andy Greenwald?

  Oof. Okay.

• 31:54Chris Ryan?

Make your dreams come true here, man. There's literally no bad picks in this. We're not gonna be here long enough to have bad picks.

• 31:59Andy Greenwald?

Um, okay. I am going to go chalk, as they say, and pick the person who I wrote about in Grantland's best SNL cast member of all time bracket.

• 32:12Andy Greenwald?

Number one on the big board is Will Ferrell, who is probably like the purest batting average of just laughs per sketch, can do anything, can play the straight guy and even make the straight guy funny. And generally, when I think about the things that have made me the laugh hardest in the last 25 years, he's been at the heart of it.

• 32:31Chris Ryan?

Yeah, okay. That's a good pick. I definitely would have been tempted to take him if I was number one. But at number two, or my number one pick, is the person that I wanted coming in, which is Eddie Murphy.

• 32:43Andy Greenwald?

  Yep.

• 32:43Chris Ryan?

And you could pick Eddie Murphy for his iconic characters, but what he also has is that

• 32:50Chris Ryan?

catching a star on the way up feeling that I think is really, really awesome when you're when you are like, I have to watch SNL because it's gonna be crazy to tell my kids or my teenage ward that I was watching Eddie Murphy on Saturday Night Live, you know? When he was just a kid coming up. So, I mean.

• 33:09Andy Greenwald?

It is unique. I, we, I wasn't watching SNL when Eddie was on.

• 33:13Chris Ryan?

I was not either. But you can watch all of the archives on Peacock and it is pretty awesome to go back and watch the Eddie seasons.

• 33:19Andy Greenwald?

And I have watched, like, I remember renting and renting and re-renting from West Coast Video.

• 33:23Chris Ryan?

  The video.

• 33:24Andy Greenwald?

The video of like the best of Eddie Murphy.

• 33:25Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 33:26Andy Greenwald?

What's interesting, and again, I'm not saying there's one right way to do this. He's undeniably, and I feel like Lauren would say too, probably the single most talented person ever to be on the show, even though it wasn't during Lauren's tenure. But you know, I'm drafting a cast here. I'm not drafting a showcase for a single star, but that's interesting.

• 33:42Chris Ryan?

It almost felt like at a certain point Eddie Murphy's.

• 33:47Chris Ryan?

  Batting average was too high?

• 33:49Andy Greenwald?

  Yes.

• 33:49Chris Ryan?

  Like he had.

• 33:50Andy Greenwald?

  All of his characters.

• 33:51Chris Ryan?

All of his characters got the like applause when they would enter a stage. But like, what like, that is also the dream, I think, you know? He just had the, the world in the palm of his hand and, and studio age.

• 34:01Andy Greenwald?

But you never see him, I'm not, I'm not, we're not going pick for pick here, but like, like Farrell being Alex Trebek, just, just lobbing pitches over the middle of the plate from Norm MacDonald, or whoever else was the guest that week.

• 34:12Chris Ryan?

  Uh huh.

• 34:12Andy Greenwald?

  I, I appreciate a grounding for that.

• 34:14Chris Ryan?

Well, you've got your second pick right now.

• 34:16Andy Greenwald?

I got my second pick. Wow. Okay. Uh, I have to go for the probably, God, I feel like I'm not, and maybe it'll get more interesting later, but you've given me the full board and I can't let Bill Murray be up there for a moment longer. Um, Bill Murray was not an original cast member. He was the replacement in the second year for Chevy Chase. And can you imagine just like Bill Murray, like one of the most singular performers of the last 50 years, just like coming in off the street from Chicago and joining this rocket ship?

• 34:50Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 34:50Andy Greenwald?

And being as idiosyncratic and memorable and charismatic as he's always been. Um, I'm into it.

• 34:57Chris Ryan?

Uh, Bill Murray's a great pick. I'm gonna go maybe off of what people would expect as a big board and try and build like a good cast here.

• 35:07Andy Greenwald?

  Okay.

• 35:07Chris Ryan?

And that's why I'm taking Phil Hartman.

• 35:09Andy Greenwald?

  God damn.

• 35:10Chris Ryan?

All time favorite Saturday Night Live performer. And in my memory, I have not gone back in like crushed tape. That era that we're talking about, where he was, he was integral to like everything that they were doing. That era also like, it felt like it had good acting, like, or rather discipline about the sketches where I don't personally remember them reading off of cue cards as visibly or breaking.

• 35:38Andy Greenwald?

Although it's always been cue cards.

• 35:39Chris Ryan?

Yeah, no, I know that's always been cue cards. I don't think that they're like, you know, off book or something. But like, it felt when I was a kid, like these sketches were being performed as pieces of theater, rather than like, can you believe we're doing this? And like, we're all cracking up at Kate McKinnon.

• 35:54Andy Greenwald?

  Yep.

• 35:54Chris Ryan?

And. That mattered to me for some reason, like in-

• 36:00Andy Greenwald?

It was a pure form of-

• 36:01Chris Ryan?

I think that, like, I always, like, really appreciated that Horatio Sanz and Jimmy Fallon and all these people were, like, doubling over with laughter in scenes. It's not that I think it's, like, illegal to break, but it seemed like that was more almost like, isn't it fun to hang out with these people who all clearly are having such a good time? Rather than these sketches are expertly performed.

• 36:21Andy Greenwald?

That also may have been the moment when the generational shift happened where the people on the show were completely indoctrinated and grew up as fans of the show. And so that feeling that we're talking about that we like of hanging out here, uh, started to permeate Studio 8H as well. Like, I can't believe we're here. We're all laughing that we're here. I totally agree with you. I'm kicking myself. Phil Hartman could have gone at any point in this draft. When I did that thing for Grantland, I wrote the finals was Hartman versus Farrell, which I think is the rare case of the internet voting everything exactly correctly. Phil Hartman is so underrated because of his untimely passing and second, in my mind, really second only to Farrell in terms of, like, can do absolutely everything and anything.

• 37:03Chris Ryan?

And would be the best thing in a sketch from the third or fourth on the call sheet to the person it was built around, like Unfrozen Caveman lawyer.

• 37:09Andy Greenwald?

Always the best in every sketch he was in, no matter what the sketch was. And, um, yeah, good job. Good job by you. I am going to go Wig because similarly, like, I just think that the unique ability to make everything funnier always, um, and deeply, deeply weird in what she finds funny and what she is willing to do. I just, just an all-timer and kind of a sneaky, a sneaky all-timer. Because at least when she started appearing on the show as a featured player, like, that was still when I was paying enough attention to be tracking people's migrations or lack of migrations from featured player to regular cast. I gotta say, you know, I, I, I've been going to the Combine a long time.

• 37:52Chris Ryan?

  You've been in Groundlings?

• 37:53Andy Greenwald?

I didn't, I didn't see it. I didn't see it with Asa and I was wrong about her early and I'm happy to have her join the squad.

• 37:59Chris Ryan?

  Uh, similar era, um-

• 38:02Chris Ryan?

One of the most delightful performances in the history of the show is Maya Rudolph. I'm gonna go with her.

• 38:06Andy Greenwald?

  Maya, great.

• 38:08Chris Ryan?

Just a, also, if in your categories, you could probably say, uh, music man. Obviously has like, uh, is able to like integrate music into her performances, incredible impressionist, incredible, uh, classy lady if she needs to be, but is just an absolute delight. And from that era, you could put her in almost anything.

• 38:32Andy Greenwald?

I'm getting nervous because I wanna make sure that I do at least make an effort to fill my quotas. So I do think I need an impressionist. And I think, uh, I think his value to the show is weirdly underrated. I'm gonna go Hater.

• 38:48Chris Ryan?

Yeah, no, it's not underrated. I think the rumors, he is not going to 50. Because I don't know why, but like, I was, I was, I was, at least it's online. It's like Hater's not going to 50.

• 39:01Andy Greenwald?

He, I mean, it's fascinating to talk to him about anything or to hear him talk, but like, I don't know, I, I'm not enough of a, um, uh, 30 rockologist to know if this is actually true or not. But like, did he, is he the highest output in terms of like enjoying it the least? Because he would, he talks quite openly about having panic attacks, the anxiety of it. And like what Lorne's voice did to him or does to him. And yet he's so, so immaculate. He's so funny.

• 39:29Chris Ryan?

Yeah, and even he has said like Lorne Michaels went up to him and was like, you can work here for as long as you like. You can relax.

• 39:34Andy Greenwald?

  And he couldn't do it.

• 39:35Chris Ryan?

Yeah. Um, man, okay. It's almost weird. It's like, it's easier to pick the, the blue skies rather than like now I'm trying to like make sure, I'm like, these people can't fall, these people can't fall.

• 39:45Andy Greenwald?

It's also interesting that we haven't picked anyone from, uh, your preferred era. I don't think, other than maybe Hartman. The, the, the, the star studded early 90s.

• 39:56Chris Ryan?

I'm gonna, I'm gonna correct that and pick Mike Myers.

• 39:58Andy Greenwald?

  Okay, now here we go.

• 40:02Chris Ryan?

Maybe in, you know, a world unto himself, you know, like a real writer, a real like performer. And his future work kind of proved that out where it's like, he's only really capable of doing a Mike Myers like fully formed, realized character, not like, I'm just in, even in Inglourious Basterds, he's like, he's playing a 1950s British movie version of that character. But man, Wayne's World, you know, Dieter, like-

• 40:36Andy Greenwald?

The characters, it's weird, like the way that we, I don't know if modern, I should try to see if my daughters respond to any of those sketches, just because they're kind of getting into SNL. Because what we understood to be the parameters of comedy, he was the Picasso of it.

• 40:50Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 40:51Andy Greenwald?

And like, the feeling of going to like, parties in middle school or high school, parties or sleepovers to expressly to watch SNL.

• 40:58Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 40:58Andy Greenwald?

And be like, they're doing it again.

• 41:00Chris Ryan?

Lothar is my, the funniest thing I've ever seen in my life.

• 41:03Andy Greenwald?

And thank God they're doing it. We're gonna talk about Sprockets all week.

• 41:06Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 41:06Andy Greenwald?

And then there is a kind of, but then he started to do that in movies and Wayne's World was so wildly, sorry, Austin Powers was so wildly funny, but then I do think there was kind of a, um, kind of a pushback against that, kind of just like programmed intense character study bits. I mean, the success or lack thereof of The Love Guru sort of reinforces that. But it's kind of, I guess the question is how well has this stuff aged, but at the time, it was as good as it gets.

• 41:32Chris Ryan?

  Your turn.

• 41:33Andy Greenwald?

You, you can't do this and leave Belushi out there too long.

• 41:36Chris Ryan?

  I was waiting, yeah.

• 41:37Andy Greenwald?

You gotta get Belushi. I mean, again, cut tragically short, but absolute like Oppenheimer level nuclear reactor of performance in comedy.

• 41:48Chris Ryan?

Do you ever go back and watch first, first season?

• 41:50Andy Greenwald?

  Yeah.

• 41:50Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 41:50Andy Greenwald?

I mean, I, as much as I go back and watch anything, but recently I have been, because again, like we're doing a little bit of a history lesson at home. No, that sounds really dull, but they like, they like it.

• 41:59Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 42:00Andy Greenwald?

With SNL. So, so trying to check back with some of that, or I rewatched The Fortieth and there's a lot of Belushi in it. And even that first, the first sketch they ever did, the first cold open where it's like the, the translator, it's Belushi and I forget- Forget who the other guy is and and and the person teaching Belushi to speak English has a heart attack and then Belushi has the heart attack.

• 42:18Chris Ryan?

  Yes, it's Michael O'Donoghue.

• 42:20Andy Greenwald?

It's Michael O'Donoghue, you're right, um, who's who's remembered as an insane person and a writer, but not really remembered.

• 42:25Chris Ryan?

  Did you see Saturday Night?

• 42:26Andy Greenwald?

No, I haven't watched it yet.

• 42:27Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 42:28Andy Greenwald?

  It's on, it's streaming now, I saw.

• 42:29Chris Ryan?

Check it out if you, it might be a good plane movie for you. I'm being serious.

• 42:32Andy Greenwald?

O'Donoghue is also in the, is it the Lampoon movie?

• 42:35Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 42:35Andy Greenwald?

Someone plays him, I watched that. Anyway, Belushi, always funny, always kind of dangerous. And you can't take your eye off him and that you need that energy in a cast.

• 42:47Chris Ryan?

So I've picked one, two, three, four, I have four, right?

• 42:53Andy Greenwald?

You've got four. I got my eye on two more. I'm curious if you're gonna steal.

• 42:57Chris Ryan?

  I'm gonna take Amy Poehler.

• 42:59Andy Greenwald?

Good pick. Good pick. Respect it. Love her. And not just because she's making a podcast for The Ringer.

• 43:05Chris Ryan?

No, not just because. But I thought she seemed to be actually like the best, like she brought both the qualities of I'm having the best time ever doing this. But I'm also made, built for this.

• 43:20Andy Greenwald?

  Yep.

• 43:20Chris Ryan?

You know, so like you enjoyed watching her enjoy doing her thing. She's also a great Weekend Update, uh, anchor. So I could put her in there. I'm not going to.

• 43:31Andy Greenwald?

  Okay.

• 43:32Chris Ryan?

But I am gonna take Amy Poehler.

• 43:33Andy Greenwald?

I love Amy Poehler. She makes everything she does, anything that she does is made better by her being in it. I'm also grateful that you did that because my board is still pretty clear.

• 43:44Andy Greenwald?

Okay, I am going to go, I did Belushi last, I'm gonna go a little more recent. I am gonna take Kate McKinnon.

• 43:51Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 43:51Andy Greenwald?

Who I think is another one of those just incredibly.

• 43:55Chris Ryan?

Yeah, Wigan McKinnon, just, just weird now.

• 43:57Andy Greenwald?

  Just goofing.

• 43:57Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 43:58Andy Greenwald?

Just goofing, but with such a high batting average for the weirdness. I don't know, in terms of rewatches, I'm not sure if anything has made me laugh harder than rewatching the Alien Abduction sketches that she does with Ryan Gosling.

• 44:12Chris Ryan?

Yeah. Or make Ryan Gosling laugh harder.

• 44:14Andy Greenwald?

That's the thing. I mean, like, we can go back and forth on the value of breaking, but sometimes it is effective. Especially when it's just bowing in front of a comedy god who is undeniable. Like, I get it. I didn't. When Fallon did it, no matter what anyone said, wasn't always on board. I get it when it's McKinnon.

• 44:37Chris Ryan?

  I'm gonna go Farley.

• 44:39Andy Greenwald?

You need, see, you need the wild card.

• 44:40Chris Ryan?

You need the wild card. He also like-

• 44:42Andy Greenwald?

  You need the big kid.

• 44:45Chris Ryan?

He, in terms of like absolutely dying, like crying with laughter, rolling around on the floor, like, he, he brought it.

• 44:53Andy Greenwald?

  Mm-hmm.

• 44:53Chris Ryan?

Between Chippendales and, and Van Down by the River. Like, I think that was like the hardest I ever laughed at.

• 44:59Andy Greenwald?

  Still.

• 44:59Chris Ryan?

  SNL, probably, yeah.

• 45:00Andy Greenwald?

I still, I still sometimes, I, I reference the, uh, the way he would hitch up his pants.

• 45:04Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 45:06Andy Greenwald?

Cause my kids, the thing that my kids hate more than anything else is when an adult kneels down to talk to them on their level. That is their number one pet peeve. Shout out, just heads up to all aunts and uncles out there. Don't, don't do that.

• 45:18Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 45:18Andy Greenwald?

Um, so whenever I, whenever I do it to annoy them, I, I tend to do it like Matt. What's the guy's name? Matt, what's his name who lives by the, anyway, you, you can Google it and everyone knows we're talking about.

• 45:29Chris Ryan?

  Matt Foley.

• 45:30Andy Greenwald?

I'm done. I've got one pick left. I'm loving, frankly, I'm loving my squad.

• 45:36Chris Ryan?

You can't have a bad draft here.

• 45:38Andy Greenwald?

No, this is kind of exciting. Uh, I am going to keep it weird and keep it 21st century. And I'm gonna take Tracy Morgan.

• 45:48Chris Ryan?

  That's a great pick.

• 45:50Andy Greenwald?

Tracy Morgan, because any era of Tracy Morgan is just pure comedy. Uh, I like, frankly, I like the longevity play here. I'd like to get all parts of him. I'm sort of thinking of him post SNL as well, like a 30 Rock Tracy Morgan. I'm thinking of, you know, we're not drafting a writing staff, but like in the hands of the right people, like Tina Fey, there's no one funnier.

• 46:12Chris Ryan?

  I'm gonna take Chevy Chase.

• 46:14Andy Greenwald?

Wow. So you're not worried about clubhouse culture?

• 46:17Chris Ryan?

  I think that, um-

• 46:18Andy Greenwald?

You think the institution is strong enough. You're like when Andy Reid signed-

• 46:22Chris Ryan?

I'm not interested in what, like, I know that you are an emo vibes guy-

• 46:25Andy Greenwald?

  I'm a clubhouse guy.

• 46:26Chris Ryan?

I want the results. I don't care about the process.

• 46:28Andy Greenwald?

  Wow. Wow.

• 46:31Chris Ryan?

I didn't know we were drafting for internal harmony.

• 46:34Andy Greenwald?

Well, cause this is, we're, I, they have to make a show together.

• 46:37Chris Ryan?

Oh, I'm, maybe I'll only get one season of Chevy, you know?

• 46:39Andy Greenwald?

  That's all anybody got.

• 46:40Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 46:41Andy Greenwald?

  And you're getting peak Chevy.

• 46:42Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 46:43Andy Greenwald?

  You're not getting contemporary Chevy?

• 46:44Chris Ryan?

  Not contemporary Chevy.

• 46:45Andy Greenwald?

All right. So let's, let's run it down. Oh no, we have to do our other parts. So, uh, so you, you did Chevy. Um, now it's time for anchor. Um, I am going to surprise no one probably, and I'm taking Tina Fey.

• 47:00Andy Greenwald?

Who I think can also do, much like another anchor like Seth Meyers, did double duty as head writer. So her sensibilities are there. I've got her on the squad. And I still, I've loved 30 Rock. I love pretty much everything she does. I'm excited for the four seasons, but maybe is never funnier than when she's just doing her super cutting stuff from behind an update desk.

• 47:22Chris Ryan?

  I'm gonna do Norm MacDonald.

• 47:23Andy Greenwald?

That was, that was the other choice.

• 47:24Chris Ryan?

I'm very tempted to take Dennis Miller.

• 47:27Andy Greenwald?

Dennis Miller was so foundational to us, I think, in terms of like, oh my God, this guy's got long hair and he's so sarcastic.

• 47:33Chris Ryan?

And he just makes all these references and I was like, what's that?

• 47:36Andy Greenwald?

He's smart. I don't, he was like when we used to use a lot of footnotes at Grandland.

• 47:39Chris Ryan?

But Norm MacDonald was like, like flying without a net.

• 47:42Andy Greenwald?

No, Norm is the, is the best choice here. I completely.

• 47:45Chris Ryan?

Okay, so now you need to pick a.

• 47:49Andy Greenwald?

  Digital shorts, shorts team.

• 47:50Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 47:51Andy Greenwald?

Well, see, like going first in this, I feel like there's a super, there's, there's chalk and then there's whatever this is. But there are a lot of more interesting choices after the top of the draft. I feel like I'm locked into Caleb Williams here just for the upside.

• 48:03Chris Ryan?

  Sure.

• 48:03Andy Greenwald?

  And the body of work.

• 48:04Chris Ryan?

  But who's Jaden Daniels?

• 48:05Andy Greenwald?

Uh, I, I think I know who Jaden Daniels is.

• 48:08Chris Ryan?

  Is it Albert Brooks?

• 48:09Andy Greenwald?

But yes, kind of, yes. I gotta take Lonely Island.

• 48:13Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 48:14Andy Greenwald?

Just because, god damn it, those were good. And still good. The one that, um, the one that they did this season with Charlie XCX is god tier.

• 48:23Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 48:23Andy Greenwald?

  Unbelievable.

• 48:24Chris Ryan?

  So that would be.

• 48:28Chris Ryan?

I think that I would probably, I mean, I guess I'm forced to sort of pick.

• 48:33Andy Greenwald?

Do you want me to give you the, the, the field? Should we list the field? So who, who I was considering for this? Contemporary would be.

• 48:40Chris Ryan?

I like that this will destroy you guys.

• 48:41Andy Greenwald?

  Please don't destroy.

• 48:42Chris Ryan?

  Please don't destroy you guys.

• 48:42Andy Greenwald?

Those are the current kids. Um, you could go back to Ben Stiller. You could go back to Albert Brooks. You could do a wild card pick, Robert Smigel, ambiguously gay duo. Those are digital shorts technically.

• 48:57Chris Ryan?

I haven't picked anybody from the recent cast, so I'm gonna, the current cast, so I'm gonna do Please Don't Destroy.

• 49:03Andy Greenwald?

  You're picking the kids?

• 49:04Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 49:05Andy Greenwald?

  You're voting on upside, right?

• 49:06Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 49:07Andy Greenwald?

  They're very young.

• 49:09Chris Ryan?

Yeah, they could be with us forever. I know, I mean, they seem like they're good locker room guys.

• 49:13Andy Greenwald?

Do you think, can you imagine what Chevy Chase and Eddie Murphy would do to these kids?

• 49:19Chris Ryan?

  Let's recap our picks.

• 49:22Andy Greenwald?

I came out of this great, I'm thrilled.

• 49:23Chris Ryan?

So like I just picked, I did Please Don't Destroy as my digital short creators, and I have Norm MacDonald as my update anchor. And my cast is Maya Rudolph, Phil Hartman, Mike Myers, Chris Farley, Eddie Murphy, Chevy Chase.

• 49:37Andy Greenwald?

  Uh, that's pretty good.

• 49:38Chris Ryan?

  And Amy Poehler.

• 49:39Andy Greenwald?

  That's pretty good.

• 49:41Andy Greenwald?

My cast is Will Ferrell, Bill Murray, Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, John Belushi, Kate McKinnon, Tracy Morgan, Tina Fey at the desk, Lonely Island, on the decks, tape decks.

• 49:54Chris Ryan?

Thanks so much for doing this.

• 49:55Andy Greenwald?

That was really fun. Now I'm excited. I wish this was real. Who would you, would you pick a host? For your episode, your premiere episode?

• 50:01Chris Ryan?

  I'll do Hanks.

• 50:02Andy Greenwald?

  Hanks?

• 50:02Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 50:04Andy Greenwald?

So, what is like the consensus? The big board would be Hanks, Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin hosts a lot.

• 50:12Chris Ryan?

I think Shalhoub is really good at hosting.

• 50:14Andy Greenwald?

That would be a wild card pick. I think, um...

• 50:17Chris Ryan?

But I would take Hanks. Would you take Baldwin?

• 50:18Andy Greenwald?

No. Paul Rudd's really good. Do you know who I'd pick? I'd pick Mulaney. I'd bring Mulaney back into the building. I love him. I think when he hosts, it's an event. You get the younger people, AKA my children watching. He has his trademark sketches and stuff, and you know, you have Hader in the cast, you can do a Stefan. I think it's gonna work for me. Also, we have so much big, I have a lot of big stars who are essentially hosts, you know?

• 50:43Chris Ryan?

  Right.

• 50:43Andy Greenwald?

  And have hosted.

• 50:44Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 50:44Andy Greenwald?

You need kind of, you need, see again, I'm just thinking chemistry.

• 50:47Chris Ryan?

I didn't know, I didn't really think about the chemistry as much, but I, this goes into like knowing like what people were like while they were on the show. I know you're a vibes guy though.

• 50:55Andy Greenwald?

  I'm a ball knower.

• 50:56Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 50:57Andy Greenwald?

  That was really fun.

• 50:58Chris Ryan?

We were gonna talk about Paradise, but we are running up against the clock here.

• 51:04Andy Greenwald?

  Yeah, do you wanna punt?

• 51:05Chris Ryan?

I, I think, would you just like to punt it into the sun? Like, what do you wanna do?

• 51:09Andy Greenwald?

Well, I, I mean, I, I had a lot of fun watching the first few episodes of Paradise on Hulu, uh, and joking about it and talking about it with you on, on, on the pod, because it felt uniquely batshit and autourish. It was landman-esque for me in the sense that Dan Fogelman, who, uh, created it, clearly is not getting notes or not listening to them.

• 51:32Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 51:33Andy Greenwald?

And doing whatever he wants, including like layering every episode with incredibly melodramatic cover of a, of an eighties cheeseball metal ballad.

• 51:41Chris Ryan?

  Uh huh.

• 51:42Andy Greenwald?

And I was kinda here for a show that's like every episode was just like, nope, they're actually in a silo. Guess what? He's dead.

• 51:50Andy Greenwald?

The problem is, it's written to the melody of This Is Us circa 2013. So it is absolutely turgid. Like, it is so, so, so slow and so serious about the weight of its revelations.

• 52:08Chris Ryan?

Until it is a car without brakes going downhill.

• 52:12Andy Greenwald?

Yes. The, the, the, just the conceit of like, we're gonna do flashbacks for everything.

• 52:16Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 52:17Andy Greenwald?

Including like the charming, uh, Secret Service agent played by, again, great guy, great actor, Johnny Beavers. And we learn in the third episode that he is a murder machine.

• 52:28Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 52:28Andy Greenwald?

  Capable of punching.

• 52:29Chris Ryan?

That's why he's been brought down into.

• 52:31Andy Greenwald?

  To death.

• 52:31Chris Ryan?

To the cavern is because he's a killer.

• 52:33Andy Greenwald?

Was he told that in terms of his performance for the first two episodes? Because that wasn't the vibe where he's just like, I just turn off the cameras to play Wii Sports. The.

• 52:43Chris Ryan?

They let him have a Wii down there, huh?

• 52:44Andy Greenwald?

I, I, I just, that sounds pretty good to me, honestly. No wonder everyone's fine.

• 52:47Chris Ryan?

What console would you take down to?

• 52:49Andy Greenwald?

Switch. Switch. All the fun of the Wii, but like a little bit.

• 52:53Chris Ryan?

All the fun of a Wii? Like, Wies are like, okay.

• 52:56Andy Greenwald?

Wies are fun. Wies are incredible. What would you bring down? You'd bring your Xbox 5 so you could just grind Call of Duty?

• 53:03Andy Greenwald?

We don't know what's waiting for us above the surface. I gotta start fracking.

• 53:07Chris Ryan?

No, man. I can't let my Nottingham Forest boys go for that long. FIFA must...

• 53:14Chris Ryan?

I must play FIFA, even in the post-apocalyptic.

• 53:16Andy Greenwald?

Is your version of the post-apocalyptic silo essentially the same as your Valentine's plans?

• 53:21Chris Ryan?

I would say, I think my first reaction if there was some sort of A, an apocalypse, and B, I was brought down into a Colorado mountain cavern, I would immediately appoint myself Real Madrid manager. Like, in real life, I'd be like, "We don't know if Madrid is still there, but..."

• 53:36Andy Greenwald?

  Would you be sending off?

• 53:37Chris Ryan?

Is there any other person who's willing to take that role?

• 53:40Andy Greenwald?

Who would you be offering to buy? Just like, take, I'll take, you know, I'll take Mbappe off your hands or whatever.

• 53:46Chris Ryan?

We don't know what happens to Mbappe in this world.

• 53:49Andy Greenwald?

I think he's fine, unless Special Agent Billy gets him in his rifle sights up above the surface. Yeah, the show, the show, I wanted it to be good, bad, and increasingly, it's bad, bad. The scene that I just, that kind of lost me was there's the entire episode that's devoted to the sexy therapy flirtation between Sterling Brown's Xavier

• 54:11Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 54:11Andy Greenwald?

and Sarah Shahi's Dr. Tarabi, I believe her name is, who is the president's psychologist.

• 54:17Chris Ryan?

  Apparently the only psychologist.

• 54:18Andy Greenwald?

Which also sounds like a Troy McClure movie in The Simpsons.

• 54:21Chris Ryan?

There is, like, The President's Therapist is a movie, I think.

• 54:24Andy Greenwald?

  Is it?

• 54:24Chris Ryan?

  James Coburn, yeah.

• 54:25Andy Greenwald?

  That sounds great.

• 54:26Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 54:26Andy Greenwald?

Should we talk about that next week? Because they go to the diner that they recreated, and a lot of the show is spent being like, "I can't believe they recreated a bar." Like, that's the only place they should recreate. Therapy offices and bars is the only thing I'm interested in seeing in my post-apocalyptic mountain silo.

• 54:43Chris Ryan?

You would actually enjoy the silo because, I mean, we shouldn't be calling it a silo because there's a show called Silo.

• 54:49Andy Greenwald?

They don't seem to know there's another show.

• 54:50Chris Ryan?

But, uh, can you imagine if you were just like, they just like simulated football? And you were like getting updates about the Eagles winning yet again in 44.

• 54:59Andy Greenwald?

Oh, I just looked at my like little Fitbit, and it was like, "The Eagles win again, their third undefeated season."

• 55:04Chris Ryan?

It was like, AI Jalen Hurts crying.

• 55:07Andy Greenwald?

  I would be so happy.

• 55:09Chris Ryan?

  Like, "Oh, look at this."

• 55:10Andy Greenwald?

Then I would go to the bar, just, just sit at the bar with the president, and be like, "That's cool, sir." This is a dream. And then I would go to therapy.

• 55:18Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 55:19Andy Greenwald?

Oh, my God, this does sound amazing. And also, it could always be kind of sunny, which is kind of what I want generally because I'm broken. All that works. But so Dr. Tarabi and Agent X go to the diner.

• 55:31Chris Ryan?

  Uh huh.

• 55:32Andy Greenwald?

And she's like, they recreated the best cheese fries in the world. And like, by the way, cheese fries are something that AI thinks people like.

• 55:39Chris Ryan?

Well, it's also like, how hard is it to recreate any cheese fries? There's like a sort of two, two elements to it.

• 55:44Andy Greenwald?

Cheese fries aren't good. I'm sorry, they're not good. The idea is good.

• 55:48Chris Ryan?

  This just got clipped, dog.

• 55:49Andy Greenwald?

Yo, tell me how they're good.

• 55:51Chris Ryan?

  They're really good.

• 55:52Andy Greenwald?

They're not good. Both things are good. Dipping a perfect french fry into molten fake cheese, phenomenal.

• 55:58Chris Ryan?

  So then what's the problem?

• 55:59Andy Greenwald?

Pouring the molten cheese onto the crisp french fries. So you just get this conchiled, congealed soggy mess?

• 56:05Chris Ryan?

I think it's like the, the, the idea is that you're creating a fry nacho situation where there's just layers to it. I mean, most people, when they're doing cheese fries, they're also doing other elements.

• 56:14Andy Greenwald?

Those nachos are bad too, because it's soggy shit you don't want, that you don't get enough of, the parts you do want on the chip. These are all overrated foods, but you've recreated this in the diner. And she's like, and the best part is the cheese is made of cashews and chemicals. And what are we doing? Then they sit and they eat these fries that are neither fries nor cashew cheese. It's whatever they, they came up with. You know, the, the prop department. On the day.

• 56:40Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 56:41Andy Greenwald?

And then they just paw, they fall into this golden light reverie, where they just start naming. And I filmed it and sent it to you. And this is 30.

• 56:49Chris Ryan?

  You did.

• 56:50Andy Greenwald?

  39 seconds of screen time.

• 56:52Chris Ryan?

I believe I said it looks like a tampon ad.

• 56:54Andy Greenwald?

And it sure does. We spent a lot of time watching mysteriously emotional commercials during the Super Bowl, being like, is this for women's sports or Jesus?
