• 0:05Dr. John Delony?

I was in a signing line in Los Angeles. Some woman leans over on the table where I'm signing her book and she said, hey, real quick, is marriage today still worth it? And I looked at her and said, what is the thing inside of you that says, I'm going to commit myself to somebody for the rest of our lives till death do us part? It makes me emotional to say it.

• 0:29Dr. John Delony?

What's going on? What's going on? This is John with the Dr. John Deloney Show. I'm so glad that you pulled up a seat to hang out with us today.

• 0:38Dr. John Delony?

A few weeks ago, I got a text message from a great friend of mine.

• 0:45Dr. John Delony?

He had just walked off the stage after doing the Tonight Show. As a comedian, walked offstage. And if you are a comedian and you get to do the Tonight Show, it's kind of the pinnacle, right? It's the place where you can exhale and say, I've made it. And he sent me a text that was so powerful and so profound. I was like, hey, I want to have this conversation where others can listen in on it. I've had him on this show before. I'm talking about my good friend, John Crist. And he just got engaged. He went through a whole lot. And we've talked about in a previous show, his recovery journey, what it's like going

• 1:30Dr. John Delony?

to rehab. It's like reconnecting with your family and your friends. And this time, we dive a little bit deeper. But I want to talk about two things that are really important to me right now. What does it look like? What is an actual journey of redemption? I get so many calls on my show about this happened. I did this thing. I got caught doing this thing and I don't have a path back. And so I brought John on to talk honestly. And I think comedians are the last truth tellers we got. Can you come back and talk about this journey of redemption and what it was like? Well, I'm not going to blow it because the conversation's awesome. And he's a guy who's quote unquote, made it. He sells out theaters all over the country.

• 2:15Dr. John Delony?

And he just asked somebody to marry him. And his fiancee, she's awesome. She's amazing. But I just wanted to talk through. Why? Why are we getting married? Why do we still have that longing to connect with somebody and go ride or die? Until death do us part? So I'm so glad you're here. Pour extra queso over the nachos. And listen to my conversation with my great friend, John Crist. There was a huge global announcement recently. On this massive engagement. Oh, yeah. Just happened to be the day after yours.

• 2:54Dr. John Delony?

  That sucks.

• 2:57Dr. John Delony?

Oh, my, I, we got, we announced our engagement, then Taylor Swift. Yeah. I think I can handle that. You've been able to sleep since? Well, I, uh, yes, number one. Uh, I, uh. This is funny. Yeah, I think it's funny. I didn't, I didn't take any, uh, I didn't take any ego hit from that. So answer. I want to dig into this question because it haunts me. Two years ago, I was in a signing line in Los Angeles. And you know this, like, you can get into a signing line or handshake in line and there's a, I don't know how to say it other than there's a gloss that comes over you. You're shaking hands. Thank you. Appreciate it. And then the next person, and then you got a handler running everybody through and you sign the thing and the next.

• 3:40Dr. John Delony?

And you're trying to like have a personal moment, but it's three seconds or five seconds and it goes on. Some woman leans over on the table where I'm signing her book and she said, hey, real quick. And for me, that can be like, hey, I've been cheating on my husband and or I'm thinking of. Man, I don't say that, am I?

• 3:57Dr. John Delony?

Well, they might be like, hey, I don't think a Christian should have said, anyway. Oh, maybe, who knows? She said, hey, real quick. And she said, is a marriage still worth it? And I immediately have a default. You know, me and my wife, and she stopped me and she goes, no, no, I know it worked out for y'all. Is marriage today still worth it? And it broke that, it just shattered that little facade. And I looked at her and said. I think so, but I didn't have data. I didn't have like the, I couldn't just rattle off the tax advantages and the this and the.

• 4:29Speaker 01

I'm sure your wife wouldn't appreciate that if you went to tax advantages first.

• 4:32Dr. John Delony?

I was trying to think of like, I can't just give you a list of why this is a great idea.

• 4:36Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 4:36Dr. John Delony?

Other than it's worked out awesome for me.

• 4:38Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 4:38Dr. John Delony?

And I think it holds civilization together, but other than those two things, right? And so I get haunted by questions and so the last two years, it's just been an obsession. And the last remaining, I've got all the answers to those questions now. The last remaining thing that I can't firmly grasp is why is Jeff Bezos getting remarried?

• 5:01Dr. John Delony?

I can't wrap my head around it. Why? And then if I distill down, cause just a rung or two below him is you.

• 5:08Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 5:08Dr. John Delony?

  Is uh.

• 5:09Speaker 01

  One or two.

• 5:09Dr. John Delony?

  And one or two.

• 5:10Speaker 01

I mean, bank accounts are similar, but he's a little bit more popular.

• 5:13Dr. John Delony?

  A lish, ish, ish.

• 5:16Dr. John Delony?

  Like you've got this success.

• 5:19Speaker 01

  Getting remarried.

• 5:19Dr. John Delony?

  You've got this house.

• 5:20Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 5:21Dr. John Delony?

  You've got a nice car.

• 5:22Speaker 01

  Not me, him.

• 5:23Dr. John Delony?

You, I'm talking about you now.

• 5:24Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 5:25Dr. John Delony?

You have a very successful career.

• 5:26Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 5:30Dr. John Delony?

What is the thing inside of you that says, I'm gonna pause and I'm going to commit myself to somebody

• 5:40Dr. John Delony?

for the rest of our lives till death do us part? What is that inner engine?

• 5:46Speaker 01

Yeah, I, I think, I mean, you'll see, you see, I think all my buddies that have gone ahead of me, I'm 41. All my buddies are, have kids that are about to be in high school. Yeah, about to be in high school.

• 6:02Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 6:02Speaker 01

And you go, man, they, they, they all have said to me, they go, dude, did, did all of this.

• 6:12Speaker 01

Employee of the year, uh, jobs raises, he goes, I wanna be, I wanna be hanging out with my wife. I wanna be at my kids' games.

• 6:21Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 6:22Speaker 01

This is all, and I think in, in terms of success, you go, well, thi- this,

• 6:30Speaker 01

  this can't be it.

• 6:31Dr. John Delony?

  Like, for what?

• 6:32Speaker 01

Yeah. Yeah, and obviously Lydia, I mean, dude, dude, I, I told somebody, I was like, I don't know, I wanna go hang out with Lydia. What's she do, what's she doing? I wanna go hang with her, and then if I, outside of that, I think for myself personally, I go, dude, imagine if I,

• 6:50Speaker 01

I mean, I got some big news positive in my career yesterday, all I, all I wanted to do is go tell her.

• 6:55Dr. John Delony?

  Tell her, yeah.

• 6:56Speaker 01

Yeah, dude, then you go, well,

• 7:00Speaker 01

and, and, and, uh, we've also gotten horrific news.

• 7:05Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 7:06Speaker 01

About family, about, uh, health, about, and you just go, well, same. Still wanna tell her, still, when I, when I get sad, I still wanna go, and that, I mean, what, what, what is Jeff Be- and I, and hopefully I've done the same for her, by the way.

• 7:23Dr. John Delony?

  Sure.

• 7:23Speaker 01

I think I have, but like, what,

• 7:26Speaker 01

  what is Jeff Bezos'

• 7:29Speaker 01

financial, you know, what, what is it? What's his, what's his future without it?

• 7:36Dr. John Delony?

Oh, that's actually the opposite question.

• 7:38Speaker 01

  What's his future without it?

• 7:39Dr. John Delony?

  Why wouldn't you do that?

• 7:40Speaker 01

Yeah, so you go, hey, uh, uh, Amazon doubled, Amazon tripled, Amazon 10x'd, we went to the moon, we, alright.

• 7:48Dr. John Delony?

And you're on a bigger boat by yourself.

• 7:50Speaker 01

Yeah, so I think everybody goes, well, look, let's, let's, I mean, Dave talks about this all the time, let's play this out. Let's play this, let's play this.

• 8:01Dr. John Delony?

You're 84 years old, you're hooked up to a bunch of machines.

• 8:04Speaker 01

And you've, and you got a lot of credits that you've been on The Tonight Show a couple of times?

• 8:08Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 8:08Speaker 01

  Or that, I don't think, I don't think that's in, I don't even think that's a Christian principle, that's just a human.

• 8:15Dr. John Delony?

  Human principle, yeah.

• 8:16Speaker 01

Yeah, that if you're sitting, you go, I, I, well, I don't wanna do this by myself.

• 8:21Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 8:21Speaker 01

I've been sober for, coming up on six years, but I, I like, you found.

• 8:28Speaker 01

You go, oh, that was, that was a part of my past and that would do, but I don't, I don't like, I found a, a better way.

• 8:35Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 8:36Speaker 01

Or I like that, you know what I'm saying?

• 8:38Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 8:38Speaker 01

Or like, yeah, I kind of, I like when you, whatever the Bible verses, when I was a child, I behaved like a child and then I became a, a man.

• 8:44Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 8:45Speaker 01

I don't think I've, I've ever felt, I've done some challenging things in my career and, and, and, uh, but I've never felt more, I, I thought, I, I thought, and maybe, maybe this is from culture or society. I thought I was gonna feel like, this makes me emotional to say, I thought I was gonna feel like a beta getting on one knee.

• 9:15Dr. John Delony?

Oh, no, it's the most powerful position in the world.

• 9:17Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:18Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 9:18Speaker 01

  And I, I'm not, I don't, I don't even know what that me, I thought that's how I would feel.

• 9:23Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 9:24Speaker 01

  Like a,

• 9:26Speaker 01

like, I don't know, like a, some kind of simp, some kind of wimp.

• 9:29Dr. John Delony?

  Yes.

• 9:29Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 9:30Dr. John Delony?

And I mean, I don't know where I got that idea.

• 9:32Speaker 01

  I don't know.

• 9:32Dr. John Delony?

  Oh, it's, it's.

• 9:33Speaker 01

  I don't know where.

• 9:34Dr. John Delony?

It's this idea that like, leadership had a household, and that stuff's been so bastardized and ruined, but like, it means being at the top. And everybody's underneath you.

• 9:44Speaker 01

You would bow to, it's not bow, but what, uh, asking on one knee.

• 9:48Dr. John Delony?

Yeah. But when you realize it's like, oh, no, no, no. Leadership is getting underneath the whole thing and saying, like, you can, you can, you can build this on it.

• 9:58Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 9:58Dr. John Delony?

Like, you can build your life.

• 9:59Speaker 01

I never felt like more of a man.

• 10:02Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 10:02Speaker 01

And I don't even know if, uh, if people are gonna listen to this and, and even make, I'm sure they will, I'm sure a guy, a man that has been in a similar scenario would.

• 10:11Dr. John Delony?

What, um, what are things you're doing? You've, like, your, your, your gang, your, the guys that you've run with for the last fifteen, twenty years have gone ahead of you. What are the things you're gonna do right now? To be

• 10:25Dr. John Delony?

the best husband you could be out of the gate?

• 10:27Speaker 01

Ooh, interesting. Well, I think I have,

• 10:34Speaker 01

  it's, it's really.

• 10:39Speaker 01

I think a lot of people around me have encouraged me that they're like, hey, this is, maybe they haven't like verbally encouraged, but you're just like, hey, you go to their, what are you doing this weekend? I'm going to my kids' games, dude. That's what I'm doing. I'm not going to, I'm not going to Georgia LSU, dude. No disrespect. It's a big game. It's a big, it'll probably be a big game this year, but if they're playing each other. But they got that, it doesn't, I think there's so many good models around me that have, have gone before me that are really like, hey, this is, and I, and I think we have a lot of, the friends that we have that have walked with us through everything, they're, they've been so helpful because they go, sometimes we go, me or her, be like, hey, this is a

• 11:24Speaker 01

big deal. And they, ahead of us, they go, that's not a big deal. Or we go, this is, and they go, hey, that's actually a bigger deal than you think. And you can have both of these, we're obviously best friends, but we have these, both have these, she'll go to her friends and they go, hey, they, it sounded like they said I was overreacting to that a little bit.

• 11:47Dr. John Delony?

I don't think so, but they.

• 11:47Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Or I'll go to my friends and I'll say, hey, I just want to, I just want to apologize for that. And I, I feel like, again, we're in very early, so like, we, I, I had a joke about how now that I've been engaged for a week, I can write a Christian, a Christian marriage book.

• 12:06Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 12:07Speaker 01

Because as soon as, as soon as any, any, any public figure in Christianity gets married, they're like, this is how you do it. I have no idea.

• 12:13Dr. John Delony?

The number of people, dude, who have reached out and been like, hey, I cheated on my wife 42 times, but we like made it. And so now we are, are going to write a marriage book and we're going to start a marriage ministry.

• 12:24Speaker 01

  I have no idea.

• 12:24Dr. John Delony?

Hey, hey, you should probably shouldn't, you should write that book.

• 12:26Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 12:26Dr. John Delony?

  You survived.

• 12:27Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 12:27Dr. John Delony?

Great. The thing that has been.

• 12:32Speaker 01

Maybe the most devastating thing for me watching the social media world explode is it has proliferated this idea of advice.

• 12:43Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 12:44Speaker 01

  And where

• 12:45Dr. John Delony?

We talked about this on our podcast yesterday.

• 12:46Speaker 01

Where is like, it's advice, advice, advice. What's the four steps? What's the attachment theory? What's the, like, all of this stuff? What's your Enneagram number? Like, every, there's all of these programs.

• 12:56Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 12:56Speaker 01

  All this advice, advice, advice.

• 12:58Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 12:59Speaker 01

And the only thing, it's kind of like when you lose everything.

• 13:03Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 13:04Speaker 01

You get this, you get, you sit at reality, like, oh, didn't kill me, I still got my birthday.

• 13:08Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 13:08Speaker 01

  Right?

• 13:09Dr. John Delony?

  Cause I got your birthday.

• 13:10Speaker 01

Wouldn't, like, when I'm sitting with somebody whose kid just passed away.

• 13:14Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 13:14Speaker 01

  There's no vice, there's no four-step plan.

• 13:16Dr. John Delony?

There shouldn't be, and you, and they don't want any.

• 13:17Speaker 01

  It's just

• 13:18Dr. John Delony?

  Don't want any presents.

• 13:19Speaker 01

  Hey, dude.

• 13:20Dr. John Delony?

  It's just showing off.

• 13:21Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 13:21Dr. John Delony?

And that's, that to me is, I mean, you sit with somebody who's been N A A for years, and you sit with somebody who's been a sponsor.

• 13:28Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 13:29Dr. John Delony?

Those often make some of the most amazing therapists. Cause they have a B S detector that's remarkable.

• 13:35Speaker 01

  They're not, yeah.

• 13:36Dr. John Delony?

But also they have a lie detector that's amazing, but they also have a, I'm here, I'm just here. I'm here with you.

• 13:42Speaker 01

Anybody, I, anybody who, you're driving and they're at the intersection and it goes, uh,

• 13:53Speaker 01

take my course, flip homes, I'll teach you how to make a million dollars a year. Like, why aren't you doing it?

• 13:57Dr. John Delony?

Yeah, go make a million dollars.

• 13:58Speaker 01

Yes, go, why, why did you write on, by the way, with a Sharpie on a steak that you bought at Home Depot? Why, why wouldn't, if I knew how to make a million dollars a month, I would not tell anyone.

• 14:12Speaker 01

Bro, I would not tell, if I was flipping homes in Nashville and had tips and tricks to do, I would not tell anyone.

• 14:20Dr. John Delony?

There's a great comic who had a joke that said, there was a sign on the side of the road that said, Call this number and ask me how I lost weight. So he calls it and the guy goes, diet and exercise.

• 14:29Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 14:29Dr. John Delony?

  He's like, oh, thanks, man.

• 14:31Speaker 01

Oh, yeah, perfect, perfect. What you would tell, like, and you, you wouldn't tell, you, you, there's a lot of, uh, like, anybody that has a, unfortunately in comedy, the people in bad marriages, you hear a lot about it. You hear a lot about those, those voices are very loud on TikTok. Those voices are very loud. Here's the five signs that your husband's a narcissist. You're like, dude, and then the.

• 14:53Dr. John Delony?

These three things prove she's cheating on you.

• 14:55Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And they were like, dude, I saw a TikTok the other day. It was like, go hug, go hug your boyfriend. Go, there, there is a good guy.

• 15:02Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 15:02Speaker 01

And when you're sad, that guy brings you a cup of coffee. Cling to that, like.

• 15:06Dr. John Delony?

  Yes.

• 15:06Speaker 01

Like they, if, if somebody, if somebody has a, if you're trying to start, start a business, you're like, hey, dude, find the guy at church. It, I feel like you got, that guy's not teaching a course.

• 15:20Dr. John Delony?

  Right.

• 15:20Speaker 01

  Cause he's running his business.

• 15:21Dr. John Delony?

  Run a business, yeah.

• 15:22Speaker 01

I'm not to any, there, there's like a trope, but anybody that's teaching a comedy class has never.

• 15:30Speaker 01

But everybody knows that. You're like, well, if you're teaching a comedy class and you can like, go, go find the comic that's selling out and go, hey, help me how to do it. Everybody that has a good marriage at your, they're not saying anything.

• 15:43Dr. John Delony?

  Right.

• 15:44Speaker 01

  They're like.

• 15:45Dr. John Delony?

Cause they're busy being married well, right?

• 15:48Speaker 01

They're like, hey, I'm lucky to, I got a great, a lot of, all you hear is, I got a great, got a great spouse.

• 15:52Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 15:53Speaker 01

Married well. We've worked through some things.

• 15:55Dr. John Delony?

  Yep.

• 15:55Speaker 01

Dude, I, the Tonight Show set could not have gone better.

• 15:59Dr. John Delony?

  It's perfect.

• 16:00Speaker 01

Yeah, it was, it was next to near perfect. Okay, so the, uh, the last joke is I'm talking about, um, if you, that my girlfriend goes, uh, some, one of her friends did a 360 and she's, you've turned her life around. I go, I think you meant 180.

• 16:14Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 16:14Speaker 01

That's the joke, right? So, and I've practiced this bit.

• 16:19Speaker 01

In preparation for Tonight Show, I want to say 50 times, maybe more. Where in the closer, she goes, it's 180. And I go, it's, you meant 360. And I go, look, babe. And I do a full 360, okay? I do a full 360 and then it gets a chuckle. And then I go, and that's the last time we talked. Boom.

• 16:40Dr. John Delony?

  Right.

• 16:41Speaker 01

That 50 times out of 50 chuckle, boom.

• 16:45Dr. John Delony?

  Right.

• 16:45Speaker 01

When I did the Tonight Show, I did, babe, look, did the full 360. It got such a, no words, by the way. Got such a huge applause break. I should have been like, John Crist. And I go, and that's the last time we talked, got less of a laugh. Because the, because the 360 was so big.

• 17:06Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 17:07Speaker 01

And it could, again, could not have gone better. And there'd be no, next to no possible way to, to live on my late night debut to cut out my closer. But I should have. Or that's what I thought when I left.

• 17:26Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 17:26Speaker 01

  And, and it's that.

• 17:27Dr. John Delony?

  It's that insatiable.

• 17:29Speaker 01

I go, God, I could, but I, I gotta be, you know, could not have gone. The only reason, it's both. The only, it went so good that if I get, I just would have made, no one in the history of late night would ever close like that on a non-verbal.

• 17:45Dr. John Delony?

  Right.

• 17:46Speaker 01

Would have been, but I give myself grace, but I also go, I mean, there's no way to, I could have rehearsed that.

• 17:54Dr. John Delony?

Right. But, but that's, that to me is being well, which is.

• 17:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 17:58Dr. John Delony?

I'm not going to beat myself up. I'm going to see, all right, in the future, I'll, I'll put that in my pocket. And, but I'm not a failure. I'm not a loser. I didn't blow it. I can, I can, I can accept this moment.

• 18:07Speaker 01

Go back and watch it. If anybody listening, you can go watch it and you go, but if I would have just certain, it would have been a huge laugh.

• 18:13Dr. John Delony?

Yeah. That's, when I watched it, the first thing I was like, I blew that. I didn't think this.

• 18:17Speaker 01

Nobody thought, but yeah. I bet everybody, every football player watching game film or every.

• 18:23Dr. John Delony?

  Of course.

• 18:23Speaker 01

Contract you sign or the books you, the books you write. You wrote a book a year ago.

• 18:27Dr. John Delony?

I'd love to rewrite them all. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, at the time, but I don't, uh, yeah, yeah, yeah. But my self-worth isn't in that. It's in, my wife loves me when I get home. My kids are happy when I walk in the front door. And that's years of work, man, which is awesome. Somebody asked me on my Instagram story the other day if I ever regretted a joke. I go, every day. What do you mean? Yeah, obviously, dude. What'd you mean? Like, if you, like, I wouldn't tell it now. I told it then. And that's the, like, you're like, well, look at this joke. I was like, yeah, but Kevin Hart said that one time, but he was trying to be canceled for something. And he's like, yeah, I made that joke. I don't make it now. Right. Isn't that progress? That's what. That's what we're doing. Progressive. That's what we're doing.

• 19:11Dr. John Delony?

The four most, uh, important words in the world, I think. That tell me someone's wise is, I changed my mind. Like, that's it. I don't think that anymore. Yeah, I used to. Yeah, yeah. And then I, and then I met him. Yeah. I used to think that.

• 19:26Dr. John Delony?

It's the fall, which means I get to wear my Poncho shirts even more than I got to in the summer. The mornings are getting cooler and I get to pull out my favorite Poncho shirts. They're comfortable performance denims and the amazingly soft flannels. Poncho's performance denim has that soft, broken-in feel like you've worn it a thousand times, but it still looks awesome. I wear them to dress up events and I wear them on stages all across the country. These shirts have a touch of stretch and they move with you and not against you. And the Poncho flannels, I'm wearing one right now. You can get them in original or western styles. They will be the softest shirts you own, guaranteed. They're medium weight, yet somehow they're both durable and comfortable.

• 20:10Dr. John Delony?

And they keep me warm without overheating. They're perfect for layering. These Poncho shirt builder creator guys, they are magic. Poncho shirts are built for real life. They wick away sweat, they dry fast, and they hold up to whatever your day throws at you. Poncho shirts come in slim or regular fit so you can look nice wherever you happen to find yourself. This fall, look sharp and stay warm in Poncho denims and flannels. Head over to ponchooutdoors.com/deloney and get 10 bucks off your first order when you sign up with your email. • 20:48Dr. John Delony?

I've become convinced that everybody at some level needs some sort of, whether you go to meetings or whether you incorporate those principles, this idea of just taking a need to something bigger than yourself, this idea of saying, I'm gonna be happy with today and then I'm gonna get up tomorrow, I'm gonna go again. My marriage is great today. I'm gonna get up in the morning before my wife and I'm gonna go do another thing, right? Whatever those those steps are.

• 21:14Dr. John Delony?

We have a culture that I think everyone is struggling with some sort of addiction and some sort of Xanax, which is, it could be work.

• 21:20Speaker 01

Some sort of Xanax. Now, what is Xanax? A painkiller?

• 21:23Dr. John Delony?

  It's a, it's a antidepressant.

• 21:25Speaker 01

  Antidepressant, okay.

• 21:27Dr. John Delony?

But like some way to numb out

• 21:29Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 21:29Dr. John Delony?

to our bodies innate alarms to say like,

• 21:32Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 21:33Dr. John Delony?

I'm scared, I don't wanna deal with that. I can't deal with that, right?

• 21:36Speaker 01

  Too much.

• 21:38Dr. John Delony?

Whether it's work, whether it is actual alcohol, whether it's pornography, whether it's what, down the, down the list. Do you have a couple of things you could tell a mom or a dad or a friend about it? They've got some in their life that is struggling with something they are ultimately powerless to control. Or them, yeah. What are, what, what does someone who's in the throes of it?

• 22:04Speaker 01

I, you know, it's funny is I have a joke in my show now about, uh, about Chat GPT. You're like, you, you feel so, uh, close with it. You say like, dude, my, uh, buddies is struggling with balding. Like, what should I tell him? It's like, dude, cuz you feel like you're so close to them. You mean you?

• 22:18Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 22:20Speaker 01

You're like, what should I tell my, yeah, uh, I would say, so when I was in, when I was in treatment.

• 22:27Dr. John Delony?

Or take me to 2017, 2018.

• 22:28Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 22:29Dr. John Delony?

People probably try to talk to you a little bit.

• 22:30Speaker 01

Oh, oh, I would say all the time. And I would say, well, I would say to the person that is, if you have a friend that is struggling, that is in the darkness, just be, just be the person that when it all comes undone that they call you.

• 22:42Dr. John Delony?

  That's it.

• 22:43Speaker 01

They, they don't, they don't need an article about how alcohol is.

• 22:47Dr. John Delony?

Or the daily Bible verse texted to them.

• 22:49Speaker 01

They know. They don't need to, that, that, uh, uh, those that struggling are in unhappiness at their jobs more likely to self dis. They know, they know, everybody, I, I could be wrong, but that's from my experience. Everybody knows. That they know that, hey, this relationship is not.

• 23:07Speaker 01

Healthy. They know. I, I could be wrong about that, but they-

• 23:10Dr. John Delony?

They know, but then there's also that voice we talked about at the beginning, which is like, but I can't lose this, but I can't lose this job, I can't lose this relationship, I can't lose-

• 23:16Speaker 01

Or that, and so when I, when I was, when I went to rehab, the worst thing, and a lot of people say I went to, went to treatment and there was, you know, we played video games and there was hot tubs there and there, I go, that's not rehab. And any, like this place was in the middle of the desert. I may have talked to you about this before. There's no, obviously no cell phones. There's no, uh, there's no screens of any sort. There's no drugs, there's no alcohol, there's no sugar, there's no caffeine, there's no, uh, fiction books. There's no, and even if you get a runner's high from working out, they don't let you do that.

• 23:56Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 23:56Speaker 01

  So there's no-

• 23:57Dr. John Delony?

That's a real place, by the way. That's a real one.

• 23:59Speaker 01

  It's a real place.

• 23:59Dr. John Delony?

It's not one of these Malibu resorts. That's a real-

• 24:01Speaker 01

  It's called the Meadows.

• 24:02Dr. John Delony?

  That's it.

• 24:03Speaker 01

Because people, they're gonna DM me all the time.

• 24:05Dr. John Delony?

  There's a bridge, there's a Meadows.

• 24:06Speaker 01

It's a real place. And let me tell you, it is horrific.

• 24:09Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 24:09Speaker 01

  It's not fun.

• 24:10Dr. John Delony?

  No.

• 24:11Speaker 01

  It's not a retreat. It's horrific.

• 24:14Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 24:14Speaker 01

It is horrific. And they take everything, any kind of escape-

• 24:18Dr. John Delony?

All the Xanax is away. Yes.

• 24:19Speaker 01

Any kind of escape. Now, if you, if you're, if you're on prescriptions, they'll look at it and maybe adjust it for you. But even that, they're like, there's no anything. So, and that will, that, and I, and I, after 45 days in there, I would go, dude,

• 24:36Speaker 01

if I could ever sink my teeth into a Chick-fil-A sandwich,

• 24:41Speaker 01

it would be unbelievable. If I could ever take my nephew to the park, it would be un- and those things, uh, all do reset.

• 24:52Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 24:52Speaker 01

All, after a time without them.

• 24:54Dr. John Delony?

  Forty-five days, that's what-

• 24:55Speaker 01

Maybe. Yeah, yeah. And I needed another two months at a, at another place. To really solidify, but I am sober.

• 25:00Dr. John Delony?

I was on the honors program.

• 25:01Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, yeah. They kept me longer. You need to stay longer? But I would say there is, there is, um, uh, uh, in therapy that I've, I've done since, that there is, if you're doing like a planned, uh-

• 25:18Speaker 01

Detachment, that's fine. It's like, hey, I'm gonna go, I've had exhausting day with the kids. I'm gonna go watch an hour of trashy television, just as long as we're admitting.

• 25:30Dr. John Delony?

  Intentionality, yeah, yeah.

• 25:31Speaker 01

That you're, or hey, I'm gonna go to the batting cages, or I'm gonna go, as long as it's not self-destructive, that is okay.

• 25:39Dr. John Delony?

  You're hiding, you're not hiding.

• 25:40Speaker 01

No, hey, I've had a stressful day, I'm gonna have a glass of wine.

• 25:44Dr. John Delony?

  Right.

• 25:44Speaker 01

As long as it's with, I think a lot of times, especially in Christianity, it's like, no, nothing.

• 25:51Dr. John Delony?

  Right, right.

• 25:52Speaker 01

And you're like, alright, well, that's, everybody's going somewhere.

• 25:56Dr. John Delony?

Then the nothing becomes a drug.

• 25:57Speaker 01

Yeah, I told, I told Lydia, I actually, I talked to Dave about this, and he's like, so many people have come in that they say, on, it's popular now because it's football season, sports betting, and people have lost hundreds of thousands.

• 26:14Dr. John Delony?

  Destroying.

• 26:15Speaker 01

It's so, it's on your phone, and I, and I do it, I do it, and I say, I go, Lydia, here, here is my DraftKings.

• 26:23Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 26:23Speaker 01

I go, I put, in January, I put a thousand dollars in this account, and it's like, at eleven hundred. Like, it's kind of embarrassing, because that money, that time should be spent building a business, or, but it is, she goes, okay.

• 26:38Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 26:39Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 26:39Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 26:40Speaker 01

And her the same, by the way, it's like, it's not detachment, whatever it's called.

• 26:45Dr. John Delony?

I always said, I don't want everyone to fall, I don't ever want to fall off a wagon, but I don't mind parking the wagon and crawling down and rolling around in the mud, and then I'm gonna hose off and get back on the way.

• 26:54Speaker 01

And they say, hey, are you gonna go down there for thirty minutes, and then we're gonna hose off, and you go, alright.

• 26:57Dr. John Delony?

  I'm in.

• 26:57Speaker 01

Yeah, I think there's a lot of, a lot of, in Christianity, it's like, wipe everything from your, I don't know, does that person, I used to like, drink in secret.

• 27:07Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 27:08Speaker 01

I was on FaceTime with a friend, and I would go off-camera, take shots.

• 27:14Dr. John Delony?

That's and Jesus was called a drunkard. They made fun of him. Look who you're hanging out with. Yeah.

• 27:19Speaker 01

Or just like if you're said, hey, I, I, uh, after like a show on the road, I would like have such a high. You're like, I put like a hundred bucks on like the West Coast NBA game and like, and like DoorDash some Taco Bell.

• 27:36Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah, right.

• 27:36Speaker 01

And that is, I don't, I'm not the most proud of it.

• 27:41Dr. John Delony?

  Right.

• 27:42Speaker 01

But I'm not doing it in secret.

• 27:43Dr. John Delony?

  Right.

• 27:43Speaker 01

  And it's not.

• 27:45Dr. John Delony?

You're not doing it to mask anything.

• 27:47Speaker 01

Uh, I'm, I'm doing it to cope a little.

• 27:50Dr. John Delony?

To come down. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 27:51Speaker 01

  Or to just.

• 27:52Dr. John Delony?

  To veg.

• 27:53Speaker 01

Yeah, but I'm a human, but also there's no, there's nobody that is, is not aware of, like all the whole crew is there and we're like, yeah. It's, it's not, I'll say it this way. It's not, if I, if I was teaching a class, I wouldn't say I was doing that.

• 28:07Dr. John Delony?

Right. But, but here's the thing. I think that's another, that's another huge dictionary culture, which is you can't rest. You can't laugh. You can't put your shoulders down.

• 28:18Speaker 01

  Can't detach.

• 28:19Dr. John Delony?

  You can't just.

• 28:20Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 28:21Dr. John Delony?

Like, and I don't know any human, anybody who doesn't have some sort of, dude, let's just go.

• 28:28Speaker 01

Or what do you, when it, when it all, when it all comes undone, when you had a horrific day at work, when the kids are, when you, I've gotten bad news. What do you want to do?

• 28:38Dr. John Delony?

  Right.

• 28:40Speaker 01

You're like, why? Well, I do, I, I say this honestly. I do not want to drink.

• 28:45Dr. John Delony?

  Right.

• 28:49Speaker 01

I don't. I, I, I'm, I want to go be alone and I want to isolate myself and I probably want to eat sometimes and I want to, yeah. You're like, all right, well, is he being honest about that? And you're like, all right, well, then you go, yeah, I probably was like, uh, dude, you need to get, I need to go down to, uh, the comedy club. You're like, hey, Lydia would be like.

• 29:18Speaker 01

Hey dude, you need to go down there and get some like attention and you feel like you're the king. I'm the king when I walk in there. Then everybody's like, dude, you go up whenever you want. They have like my, uh, my order memorized and if I come late in the show, they have it like waiting for me. And you're like, dude, I feel, you're like, that's a good feeling.

• 29:33Dr. John Delony?

  That's right.

• 29:34Speaker 01

Just say that that's a good feeling. And then we can all be like, all right, see you in the morning. That's fine.

• 29:39Dr. John Delony?

  Right, right, right.

• 29:40Speaker 01

  Or like, yeah, whatever.

• 29:41Dr. John Delony?

  It's intentionality.

• 29:42Speaker 01

It's same with everybody that's a, that's a workaholic, which I can be guilty of doing too. You're a god in there. And maybe in your personal life, it's not going well. So I just say, hey, I'm gonna be honest with you. Whenever I go in there, everybody needs me. Everybody wants my, I'm, I'm, I feel like I'm the man in there. So I, and I feel like this might not be going well. I probably shouldn't, but I've, I've defaulted to spending a little bit more of my time in there. I imagine any other human would be like.

• 30:13Dr. John Delony?

  It's where everybody finds themselves.

• 30:15Speaker 01

They go, yeah, and if that's not your addiction, they go, well, I don't do that, but.

• 30:18Dr. John Delony?

I've got this one. Yeah, but it's, it's to me, if, if it's of importance, if I realize, like my wife told me the other day, she's like, hey, just, as your, as your wife, going to the comedy clubs, it's your new drug. I did this with an MMA gym like 20 years ago. She's like, you just kind of moved in and she's like, it's your new drug. She goes, I don't mind it. It's cool. I just need you to know, I see an addict and I'm like, all right, cool, but it's kind of awesome. Can I?

• 30:42Speaker 01

  Yeah, it's awesome, yeah.

• 30:43Dr. John Delony?

But it's, it's, it's A, calling it out and B, she's like, she goes to bed at 5:45 PM.

• 30:49Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 30:49Dr. John Delony?

  Whatever. So, but the bigger.

• 30:51Speaker 01

And if you're in a, you're like, hey, I'm not losing my job. The kids have school clothes. Everybody's taken care of. I'm, we're gonna make sure. They go, yeah, go for it.

• 30:57Dr. John Delony?

But also, there was a season about two or three months ago, when it was coming at the expense of, right?

• 31:02Speaker 01

  Yeah, fair.

• 31:03Dr. John Delony?

And so, and then it's like, you know, she's more important.

• 31:05Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 31:05Dr. John Delony?

We're gonna come back here, right?

• 31:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 31:07Dr. John Delony?

But I do love, circle them back and then we'll, we'll close up. I love that wisdom. If you're with somebody who's really struggling, I think there's something important about saying, hey, I see that you're not okay.

• 31:17Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 31:18Dr. John Delony?

And then I'm gonna continue to tell you I love you. And I'm gonna, I'm gonna be here when this, in the ash, I'll be there. Cause this ends in ash. And, and, but like the, the secret pamphlets or the what?

• 31:31Speaker 01

Yeah. I was, I was, uh, uh, my buddy, um.

• 31:38Speaker 01

And this before I got the Tonight Show, but he called me and he goes, uh, hey dude, I got some, I got some news. Uh, we lost a child. We lost, uh, they had a miscarriage.

• 31:50Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 31:53Speaker 01

And we just were like, dang.

• 31:58Speaker 01

And I, and I, I told Lydia like after,

• 32:03Speaker 01

I was like, I was, dude,

• 32:08Speaker 01

I told him this actually recently. I go, did he have any idea? How honored I was to get that call.

• 32:16Speaker 01

So, and he, he told me from his mouth that he called other people, and they, and they, they couldn't.

• 32:23Dr. John Delony?

  Hold it.

• 32:24Speaker 01

They were like, uh, here's the statistics. It happens all the time. Or they, and so he, in his darkest, he scrolled through, right, and scroll, but he goes,

• 32:37Speaker 01

  this guy.

• 32:38Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 32:38Speaker 01

Could, and he's been with me through tremendous sadness. Tremendous. And, and we've, we have a relationship together. So you go, I wonder why, I guess that would be my advice. Try to become that friend.

• 32:51Dr. John Delony?

  So when it comes down.

• 32:53Speaker 01

  Why did he call me?

• 32:54Dr. John Delony?

  I'm gonna call you.

• 32:55Speaker 01

And he knew, he was in his darkest day and he go, I wouldn't be like, oh, that happened all the time?

• 33:01Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 33:01Speaker 01

Or, and then, and then I, uh, same guy got the Tonight Show. And I go, like, I texted you. I called some other people. I FaceTimed my parents. Well, I, I called you before I happened. Cause I was proud. And I went to his house.

• 33:24Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 33:24Speaker 01

I went to his house and I knocked on his door and I go, dude, I got the Tonight Show.

• 33:27Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah, that's it.

• 33:29Speaker 01

  And I go,

• 33:33Dr. John Delony?

What are we doing? Yeah. If we're not doing that? Yeah. What? What are we here for? That's love. We're gonna, we're gonna hold the, the bad stuff and we're gonna hold the good stuff. Yeah, both. And they don't cancel each other out. Yeah. Well, dude, I want to tell you, congratulations. It's awesome. Thank you, man. Same to you. That, uh, that, uh, thinking about closing that door in 2019 to you walking out into downtown New York in 2025. Oh, dude. It's, I wish everybody could, I don't, I'm just so proud of you. Horrific, horrific, but I wish. Proud is not the right word, I'm like your dad, but man, I'm so proud of you, it's awesome.

  Yeah.

six years. Take me back to laying in bed. And you know that first night, for people who don't know in rehab, like, that first night, like, it's, it's like being a college freshman, like,

• 36:44Speaker 01

I was gonna compare it to Shawshank, but it's not like that. It's not like that. Mentally, maybe mentally, maybe mentally.

• 36:50Dr. John Delony?

Were you, did you have a roommate?

• 36:53Speaker 01

Let's see, not the first night.

• 36:54Dr. John Delony?

  Not the fir-

• 36:55Speaker 01

No, the first night, you're like in the mo- in like an acute, like, uh, and then you, as you-

• 36:59Dr. John Delony?

  Oh, so you got detoxed?

• 37:00Speaker 01

As you, nah, nah, nah, nah. Okay. But like, you go in, and they're like, uh, you gotta be monitored 24/7. And then, like, they take, like, when you first walk in, I don't know if I said this last time, but they take away, like, your belt, your shoelaces, 'cause people come in there, like, suicidal.

• 37:14Dr. John Delony?

Oh, so you weren't okay? You didn't waltz?

• 37:16Speaker 01

  No, I mean, I, I was not, I don't wanna make a bigger deal. I mean, I wasn't good.

• 37:20Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 37:22Speaker 01

  I wasn't good.

• 37:22Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 37:23Speaker 01

But they, they, they take away, like, I, for me, I always joke that they took away my hair gel, 'cause there's, like, alcohol in, like, any possible escape-

• 37:32Dr. John Delony?

  Yes.

• 37:33Speaker 01

your look, so they take, but then, obviously, after, like, a couple of hours, they're like, "Oh,

• 37:37Dr. John Delony?

  You can go there."

• 37:37Speaker 01

"You're good, here, you can go to the other."

• 37:39Dr. John Delony?

And so I think back to, like, my first year in a dorm as a freshman.

• 37:43Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 37:44Dr. John Delony?

I don't know this guy, random roommate from Kansas.

• 37:47Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 37:48Dr. John Delony?

I'm trying not to breathe too loud, trying to, like, be cool.

• 37:50Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 37:51Dr. John Delony?

And so, I'm thinking, like, alright, you're back in that room.

• 37:54Speaker 01

Yep. I remember everything about it.

• 37:56Dr. John Delony?

  Tell me.

• 37:57Speaker 01

I mean, I had a, I was like, it's kinda like out of, out of body a little bit, that you're like, "I can't believe I'm here." I mean, there was a guy that came in the day after me, that they, he, they found out that he was- Gee on his wife or something, he was a pastor. And they, they, he was, he, he was at church, working. They pulled up with a bag packed for him. They said, if you get in this car, right, we know about everything. If you get in this car right now, we'll pay for your treatment and we'll, so he showed up in his khakis tucked in. Like, imagine the.

• 38:36Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 38:37Speaker 01

  You know?

• 38:38Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 38:39Speaker 01

He was like, I don't even know.

• 38:40Dr. John Delony?

  Like what just happened?

• 38:41Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, you're just like out of your, and then it's, I think it slowly sinks in, I don't know, maybe. I mean, I, if I was marked for dead, it was, it was, I marked myself for dead.

• 38:52Dr. John Delony?

  Of course, of course.

• 38:53Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Everyone else is like, yeah.

• 38:54Dr. John Delony?

But I mean, you, you have to be thinking like, alright, so this part of my life is over. This, this part of my life is over.

• 39:00Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 39:00Dr. John Delony?

  And so.

• 39:01Speaker 01

  Yeah, it's over.

• 39:02Dr. John Delony?

I'm gonna be an Arby's manager, like, walk me through that.

• 39:05Speaker 01

Oh, worse, dude, I. I mean, and no disrespect, no disrespect to anybody that works at Arby's. Yeah, I think, I think the.

• 39:13Dr. John Delony?

I'm gonna start a, I'm gonna start a lawn business.

• 39:14Speaker 01

Yeah, uh, let me think, if I, if I, I thought I was gonna lose all my money, all my, every, I mean, everything, everything. I didn't, I was like, maybe I'll go live with my parents or something like that. I have no idea. I, I mean, you just have no, it's all upside down. And you're like, well, this is the path I was on now, um, I always, I would cry. I think I would be sad because I was like, maybe I can't afford to like, I don't know, I thought I couldn't afford to get married. I had no girlfriend or no.

• 39:45Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 39:46Speaker 01

But I was like, I can't, I couldn't get, I have no future, I have nothing, dude, I have nothing. Louis CK said that all they, all I have left is my birthday.

• 39:54Dr. John Delony?

  Oh, that's, that's a good line.

• 39:55Speaker 01

And he got cancelled, yeah, all I have left is my birthday. Everything else is they, or they don't, they will not stop until they take everything, all I have is my birthday.

• 40:05Dr. John Delony?

And so one of the most common calls I get, one of the most common like, hey Dylan, we need you to come over to our house.

• 40:10Speaker 01

I didn't have my phone, but I would have.

• 40:12Dr. John Delony?

  No, I'm sorry.

• 40:13Speaker 01

They didn't let me have my phone, but yeah.

• 40:14Dr. John Delony?

But, but the number of people who get to the place.

• 40:16Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 40:17Dr. John Delony?

I found out my husband cheated on me. I found out my kids got X, Y, or Z. I just lost my job. AI is about to take my job, whatever. It's that sense that you play the, you play the future out.

• 40:27Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 40:27Dr. John Delony?

  All the way.

• 40:29Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 40:29Dr. John Delony?

  And it's all over.

• 40:32Dr. John Delony?

And then I tune in to watch, and I know that's delayed, and I'm sitting there cheering in my, like, house by myself, like, cheering. And then you walk out of The Tonight Show six years later.

• 40:47Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 40:47Dr. John Delony?

Which is the pinnacle. I mean, it's the pinnacle. If you grew up on like Carson, that's it. That's it. It is what it is. Walk me to that, that moment.

• 40:57Speaker 01

I mean, so I, I, I was sitting at, so you, you, the only way forward, I think, I had to get to a place is like, cause I had a, a book deal. I was gonna be on The Late Show with James Corden.

• 41:13Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah, back in the day.

• 41:14Speaker 01

And a Netflix special that were all about to come out. All gone. The only way forward, and I tell other people this is all, I think you've actually said this on your, like, it's over. Like you're the, your former, it's over. It's over. You can't be like, reaching back out to the publisher. Hey, are we still?

• 41:31Dr. John Delony?

  It's over.

• 41:31Speaker 01

It's over. It's over. It's all over. And I'm actually having lunch with a guy tomorrow that, very similar situation. It's over. Yeah. Hey, what about the tour? It's over. It's, and if you can get there, then you can, you can start to, I don't know, I wouldn't even say rebuild, build.

• 41:52Dr. John Delony?

Start, yeah, not re, but start.

• 41:54Speaker 01

But I knew I could still tell jokes.

• 41:56Dr. John Delony?

  Sure.

• 41:56Speaker 01

And so then I was like, well, I'll start. I don't mean, I didn't even know if I could ever

• 42:04Speaker 01

do comedy again. I think I was catastrophizing things in my mind. Obviously you're.

• 42:08Dr. John Delony?

But I mean, it's real though.

• 42:09Speaker 01

  Yeah, dude, it's not, yeah.

• 42:10Dr. John Delony?

It's like a Netflix deal and a book deal. Like all these things that people, everyone's sitting at home saying, that'd be so cool if

• 42:14Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 42:15Dr. John Delony?

you had that. And then it's gone.

• 42:16Speaker 01

  Yeah. And now all, well.

• 42:20Speaker 01

The, I'm sitting in my, uh, I mean, The Tonight Show's been such a, such a...

• 42:28Dr. John Delony?

That's gotta be equally out of body.

• 42:30Speaker 01

No, dude, more out of body, dude, more out of body. I've gotten all those things back.

• 42:34Dr. John Delony?

  Uh huh.

• 42:34Speaker 01

  X.

• 42:35Dr. John Delony?

  Times a thousand.

• 42:36Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But I go, uh, like, I was sitting in my, I mean, we, for, to do The Tonight Show, you, you, A, first of all, to get on their radar.

• 42:47Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 42:47Speaker 01

You have to walk fifteen, not fifteen years, but a long time. They go, oh, we know who you are. Okay, we're gonna send a, uh, video, we're gonna send a, uh, five minutes. Uh, we don't like it, change this video. We say, alright, well, they responded. Okay, well, change this part, move this around, switch the opener to this. Actually, they don't like those when you're talking about your, uh, family too much, maybe switch it to more, switch it to this, and then you go, uh, they're, they're, back and forth. I'm talking about years, dude, years. And then you go back and I'm going down to Zany's, uh, every Monday night when I'm off tour, I do a tour all weekend, and then Monday night I'm going down to Zany's to try to

• 43:24Dr. John Delony?

  Try.

• 43:24Speaker 01

  perfect this.

• 43:25Dr. John Delony?

  That's right, that's right.

• 43:25Speaker 01

Five minutes. And the last time, Tristan, the guy that filmed down there, and we were going back and forth and, and mixing jokes and, and I go, man, I'm so tired, and I got, I'm doing five, six hours in the weekend. I can't afford to spend my Monday nights coming down here. I gotta be off, I gotta be, and I go, and we've been so many times, dude. And I go, I told this to my girlfriend, now fiance, I go, if, if this, if this one doesn't,

• 43:57Speaker 01

if they don't like this one,

• 44:00Speaker 01

  I think I'm, I think I'm done.

• 44:02Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 44:02Speaker 01

  I'm done trying to pursue.

• 44:04Dr. John Delony?

  That.

• 44:05Speaker 01

I'm just gonna say, hey, it's not for me, I'm gonna go in a different direction. I'm sitting in my kitchen. I mean, there's like five moments in my comedy career that I'll, I'll never forget, that while sitting at my counter, and I got an email from my, uh, from my manager, and he's like, they've confirmed June 16th for The Tonight Show in your life.

• 44:27Speaker 01

I mean, I was bawling, dude.

• 44:28Dr. John Delony?

  Uh, yeah.

• 44:29Speaker 01

Bawling, dude. I was just sitting there like.

• 44:33Speaker 01

  And I think, I think, I don't know, I don't think this, if I would have.

• 44:38Speaker 01

It, if I would have gotten that. I, I, it wouldn't have meant as much.

• 44:45Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 44:45Speaker 01

Or wouldn't I? I was just, I like, well, you know, it's weird because I texted you about it, but I, I wrote a story in my. Book about, I think I told it in here. I don't remember. When I got on TV for the first time. I got on TV for the first time. I was on, uh, Live at Gotham on like Comedy Central.

• 45:02Dr. John Delony?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I remember those.

• 45:03Speaker 01

Fifteen, ten years ago. I'll never forget this. I called my parents to like tell them and they go, we don't have that channel.

• 45:10Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 45:11Speaker 01

And it was just, I've told that story before. It was just so devastating.

• 45:14Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 45:15Speaker 01

I was like, they're gonna rent a projector, put it up in the backyard, invite the whole neighborhood. Have a huge, I just had in my mind that that was gonna be what they did and they go, we don't have that channel. And it was devastating. I've told that story before, but I think now. I, well, I mean, I told you.

• 45:35Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 45:35Speaker 01

I told, obviously I told my parents, called my parents, they were bawling, called, I'll, everybody that's important to me. And I go.

• 45:44Speaker 01

I go, if they, if you, if you didn't respond to that.

• 45:50Speaker 01

  That's fine. I would, I, I hope.

• 45:52Dr. John Delony?

  Cause it's for you.

• 45:53Speaker 01

I didn't do it for any, it wasn't for, it wasn't for attention on the internet. Everybody's like, what, how much did it pay?

• 45:58Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 45:58Speaker 01

Uh, how many followers did you get from it? Is Jimmy your best friend?

• 46:03Dr. John Delony?

  Right, right.

• 46:04Speaker 01

Are you going on to SNL? Or like all these, I go, I, it was like. I feel like God gave me this talent. I worked really hard on this five minutes. It was unbelievable.

• 46:20Speaker 01

And it exists and exists forever. And a lot of people were were entertained by it.

• 46:26Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 46:26Speaker 01

And I was proud just as somebody that was a basketball player or a welder or like, look what we, look at this new, new construction. Look, we welded this whole thing. Look at that.

• 46:37Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 46:38Speaker 01

Wow. How much did you get paid?

• 46:39Dr. John Delony?

  That it?

• 46:40Speaker 01

Well, did the welders of the year, that it? You know what I'm saying?

• 46:44Dr. John Delony?

Like me and my guys built a building to be here for a hundred years.

• 46:47Speaker 01

  We did that.

• 46:47Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 46:48Speaker 01

I learned how to do that. Look at that.

• 46:50Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 46:50Speaker 01

I did that. And I'll drive, every time I drive by it, I'll be like, I did that.

• 46:54Dr. John Delony?

  That's right.

• 46:54Speaker 01

Every time I see Jimmy Fallon or it's a night show, I go.

• 46:57Dr. John Delony?

  I done that.

• 46:58Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 46:59Dr. John Delony?

Man, how do you get there? I want to get there.

• 47:04Speaker 01

In la- well, I think, I mean, I, I told my, one of my buddies, he, he, he works at a, he works at a, a church and his, um, his wife is like terrified of him like losing his job. What if we lose the job? What about, what are the kids gonna do? What if, I'm sure you get calls like that all the time. And I secretly whisper to myself sometimes, I go, I wish you wouldn't lose it.

• 47:36Dr. John Delony?

  Yeah.

• 47:36Speaker 01

Because then it's all gonna come undone. You're gonna go work at Home Depot or whatever you guys say in here. Whatever that, what's the typical job that they say in here? What does Dave tell people? You're gonna go deliver pizzas.

• 47:48Dr. John Delony?

  Right, deliver pizzas.

• 47:48Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, whatever that, yeah, I don't think they do that anymore.

• 47:50Dr. John Delony?

  Robots do that now, whatever.

• 47:51Speaker 01

So I kid, it's hard to go tell them, hey, we don't, we don't, no one delivers pizzas anymore. You're gonna go deliver pizzas, it's all gonna come undone. Maybe you're gonna have to move back in with your parents. And then what's gonna happen is you're gonna find a new job and then you're never gonna be scared of that again.

• 48:09Dr. John Delony?

Everybody hears about supplements. Supplements at the grocery store, supplements on the internets. We all hear about how important supplements are. And most of what you see on the shelves at your local store is garbage. Most of the stuff you swipe up to look at on Instagram, garbage. It's a lot of fancy labels. With cool names and zero substance. I'm not playing that game and I've never played that game and neither is Thorne. I've been taking Thorne supplements for more than a decade. They're pure, they're clean, and I trust Thorne supplements enough to give them to my family. Yes, that includes my kids. Whether you're a serious athlete, a mom on the go, or a dad trying to show up for his

family after a long, long day of work, you deserve the best and that is Thorne. Thirty-five percent of Thorne's employees work in quality control. They reject fifteen percent of their raw materials because good enough is not good enough for Thorne. It's why professional athletes, Olympic teams, and sixty thousand plus doctors trust Thorne and that's why I trust them too. Stop guessing and crossing your fingers about what's going into your body. Take what it needs and nothing it doesn't. Go to thorne.com/the letter U slash Deloney to get twenty-five percent off your entire order when you create an account.

That's T-H-O-R-N-E, thorne.com/the letter U slash Deloney to get the supplements that your body was meant to have.

• 49:43Dr. John Delony?

All right, thanks for joining me and my friend John Chris to talk about redemption, talk about marriage, and talk about how to keep a sense of humor in a world gone insane. And I just want to throw this out there.

• 49:55Dr. John Delony?

John sells out theaters all over the country. If he's coming to your town, you gotta put it on the calendar and go see him. You will laugh, laugh, laugh, laugh, laugh, and it's good for the soul. But here's the thing that, um, that morning, we, we, we recorded the show, we cut the show. That night was my very first sold out night performing at, on the main stage here at Zany's in Nashville, Tennessee. I spent a lot of time at Zany's. I love being around comics. I like being in the green room with those guys as they're practicing, making their jokes better, telling the truth, razzing each other.

• 50:32Dr. John Delony?

A lot of people learning how to get really good at their craft and I just love being around people who are trying to get better at the thing that they do. But John did me a huge favor. And he is a headliner all over the country, but he showed up as a surprise opener for my show. And he laid the groundwork. He just crushed. I'm recording this intro after he's gone. He crushed. And when you have a comedian that will go up first and just level the crowd with humor, then it really helps out the person who follows up. And so, big personal shout out to John for coming up unannounced. He sells out places all over the country and he's like, "Yeah, I'll roll up for this YouTuber guy and help him out."

• 51:17Dr. John Delony?

And man, for those in the audience, it made for a magic, magic night. So, big shout out to my friend. Go see him when he comes to your town. Love you guys and I'll see you soon.
